HEALTH ADVICE FROM KILLARNEY GP DR LAURA MALONE

What should I do if I think I have COVID-19? Coronavirus typically causes respiratory symptoms, the most common symptoms of COVID-19 are fever, tiredness, and dry cough. Some patients may have aches and pains, nasal congestion, runny nose, sore throat or diarrhoea. Most people with Coronavirus will only have mild symptoms and will get well within weeks. Even though the symptoms are mild, you can still spread the virus to others. If you have any symptoms or if you are concerned that you may have been in contact with a case of COVID-19, behave as if you have the virus and isolate yourself to help stop the spread of this disease. Stay indoors and avoid contact with other people. People in your household will need to restrict their movements. Do not go to your GP in person. Contact your GP by phone.

YOU SHOULD:

• Stay at home in a room with the window open •K eep away from others in your home as much as you can •C heck your symptoms - call a doctor if they get worse •P hone your doctor if you need to - do not visit them •C over your coughs and sneezes using a tissue - clean

your hands properly afterwards •W ash your hands properly and often •U se your own towel - do not share a towel with others •C lean your room every day with a household cleaner or disinfectant It's OK for friends, family or delivery drivers to drop off food or supplies. Make sure you're not in the same room as them when they do. Keep yourself mobile by getting up and moving around as much as possible. If you have a garden, backyard or balcony, go out and get some fresh air, but keep more than two metres away from other people. Stay hydrated. You may be caring for a child, family member or someone who needs support while they are in self-isolation. If you are, follow the advice above.

Gardai stepping up patrols across the town | By Michelle Crean

TEST CENTRE: A sign outside the HSE test centre in Tralee.

HSE has no plans for Killarney testing centre With COVID-19 cases on the rise in Kerry, the HSE has this week said they’ve no immediate plans to add to the number of centres in Kerry - including Killarney. | By Michelle Crean

EXCLUSIVE

There’s just one centre for testing which is based in Tralee. 'There is one in Kerry, one in Cork city, one in West Cork and one in North Cork,' the HSE said in a statement to the Killarney Advertiser. 'While the locations of centres may change, there are no immediate plans to add to the number of centres. As part of our efforts to rapidly increase the number of tests being carried out in this region, our focus in recent days has been to rapidly expand the capacity of the testing locations across Cork and Kerry'. The HSE said that there has been an un-

precedented level of demand for tests, and they thank the people of Kerry for their patience and understanding at this time. However, Cllr Donal Grady says that it’s a scary time for everyone and with numbers on the increase, that a dedicated test centre should be a priority for Killarney town. “I honestly believe we should have a test centre in Killarney,” Cllr Grady told the Killarney Advertiser. “We’re the fifth highest county in Ireland, of course there’s good reason to have one. We’re falling back. What about people who cannot drive and our elderly people?”

With new increased powers as a response to the threat of COVID-19, Killarney Gardai have stepped up daily patrols to minimise the numbers of people congregating around town. Resources at Killarney Garda Station have increased after the allocation of three new garda recruits, who were sworn in prematurely as part of the new Coronavirus policing programme. Local garda bosses have also increased man power on the streets, with daily mountain bike patrols in the National Park and other amenity areas such as Muckross, Killarney House, and Ross Castle. “In response to the threat of COVID-19 and the recommendations of the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) that all non-essential retail outlets close to members of the public and social

distancing to be implemented, Killarney Gardaí have increased mountain bike patrols which will be patrolled daily minimising the risk of groups congregating,” Sergeant Dermot O’Connor told the Killarney Advertiser. “Additional mobile patrols are in place in the community to address groups in housing estates.” He said they’re getting regular calls about groups of up to six gathering together in various places around town. While it hasn’t escalated, he’s appealing to parents to keep them in. “We would ask parents to self-regulate it and are asking for everybody’s help on this.” Gardaí are also linking in with local community groups to identify persons in need of assistance at this time. Killarney Gardaí are seeking the continued support of the community, and said that to date no significant difficulties have been reported to Killarney Gardaí.

Emotional first meeting for local granny | By Michelle Crean Their emotional first meeting was one which will go down in the family’s history book as one Killarney grandmother met her newborn granddaughter for the very first time through a glass window yesterday (Thursday). Bridie McGrath from Ardshanavooley, is thrilled with the latest edition to the McGrath family – but it was also a surreal moment which she’ll never forget – as they had no physical contact due to the current COVID-19 restrictions. Baby Chloe McGrath was born at 12.30pm on Saturday last to proud parents Maxine

and John McGrath in Cork University Hospital. However, due to the new restrictions over the pandemic, Bridie’s son John, who works in Liebherr, was only allowed be near his wife as the birth drew closer, and had to wait until Monday to see her and his child again when taking them home. Restrictions meant that big brother Joshua (4) saw his little sister for the first time in the car. “When we landed at 2.30am on Friday night they only let Maxine in with her bags and I had to go wait in the car for a call,” John from Pinewood Estate told the Killarney Advertiser. “I was left in at 4am and Chloe was born at 12.30pm the next day.”

Maxine said that it was worrying being inside the hospital with the escalating health crisis. “It was very lonely, but the nurses were very good to be fair. I was in a room with two other beds but they were empty. I was left to my own devices really. They are washing their hands constantly. It was hard for John, he had no time to bond with her as he had to wait to see her again on Monday.” Bridie added that it was wonderful to see Joshua next to his baby sister for the first time, but wished it could have been face to face. "It was beautiful to see her. What can you do? It's just safer to do it this way."

“No one is listening” says UK based Irish nurse

27.3.2020

A Kerry nurse who is working hard on the frontline in a London Hospital says that the people in the UK are not taking the current health crisis seriously. | By Michelle Crean

EXCLUSIVE

Lucy Whelan (28) from Milltown, whose grandmother Eileen Whelan is from Beaufort, says numbers of patients with COVID-19 are rising and it’s getting busier. Lucy, daughter of Susan Harris-Doyle, who attended secondary school in Presentation, has been living in the UK for 11 years and says she’s picking up as many shifts as possible to help in the COVID-19 crisis they now find themselves in. She’s appealing to people to continue physical distancing and to practice good hygiene. She trained in Hertfordshire University where she qualified as a nurse in 2012 and now works as an A&E nurse in a London hospital. This week, as Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced new stringent measures to keep people at home, she told the Killarney Advertiser that Ireland is taking it more seriously than the UK as people are still out in groups and many non-essential shops such as vaping stores still have their doors open. “Ireland is taking it way more seriously than here,” she said. “There’s people out in groups on the high street where I live. There’s this attitude of it won’t happen to them. I want to shout at people ‘what are ye doing?’.” She explained that with numbers rising rapidly to over 2000 in the last few days A&Es are now turning into respiratory

centres to treat as many as possible. And although she has an underlying health condition, Lucy says she’s not worried for herself. “We have been given extra scrubs. We put on a full gown from wrist to ankle, a visor, masks and have to cover our hair. We shower before we leave work and I go home wash my clothes at 90 degrees and shower again. I won’t let anyone in my car. I’m not worried for myself but worry what I’ll bring home to my boyfriend. He’s nervous.”

Killarney nurse helping through the crisis | By Michelle Crean One local woman will be on the frontline tomorrow (Saturday) as the dedicated young student nurse will devote her time to her patients. Megan O’Connor (22) from Faha, a final year nursing student in Trinity College, is working at Tallaght Hospital for her internship.

Normally stationed in the surgical ward, she will now be helping patients as many wards are becoming solely dedicated to COVID-19 patients. “It’s less than ideal circumstances, as someone who’s just getting started it’s a bit daunting,” Megan told the Killarney Advertiser. A member of the Kerry branch of the Red Cross since the age of 16, Megan, a trained Emergency Medical Technician

She’s appealing to people not to get complacent and think of those like her on the frontline. “A lot of nurses I know have separated from their family because they don’t want to spread it to them. One sent her child up to relatives up the country. It’s awful what people are having to do.” And wearing gloves isn’t the best measure to take, she added. “Don’t rely on them because when people wear them they forget to wash their hands.” (EMT), took two weeks annual leave to help out alongside her kind-hearted father Denis. “Dad is a driver transporting people around for whatever anybody needs and checking in on vulnerable people locally.” She added that once she’s back to work, she won’t see her family for a long time due to fear of spreading the infectious disease. And she added that personal protective equipment is hard to come by with colleagues having to disinfect and reuse googgles after each patient. “I’ve never seen anything like this. One silver lining in the whole thing is we see peoples’ kindness, it’s showing the best side of Irish culture.”

Killarney’s business leaders have sent out a loud and clear message to the local business community and the people of the town saying “We will get through this together and there will be better days”. Senior Chamber of Tourism and Commerce officials were out and about very early yesterday morning (Thursday) to erect a giant banner across Main Street with the timely message: “Take care of yourselves and each other. #Love Killarney”. The width-of-street banner is located at the exact spot normally used to promote big community events in the town but all thoughts have now turned to coping with the COVID-19 pandemic. Volunteers who joined Chamber President Paul Sherry on banner erection duties were Chamber members Paul O’Neill, John O’Shea, Martin Walsh and Etienne van Vrede. The Chamber is determined to offer support to all during the crisis which is having a devastating impact on the commercial, social and normal day to day life in the town. “We want to assure people that we are with them every step of the way,” Paul Sherry said. “The Chamber is here to help and anything that can be done to assist others will be done. “Our message is that we will get through this together and there will be better days ahead in this wonderful town.”

Each of us has to take responsibility To conquer this health crisis it all boils down to a drastic change in human behaviour – but for some this message is still not fully sinking in.

SUPPORT

KILLARNEY

Michelle Crean, editor of Killarney Advertiser.

In a week which saw hundreds of thousands across the country out and about in the fresh air at beaches, nature walks and in woodlands as the sun shone on Mother’s Day, the whole concept of physical distancing for most was totally forgotten. Killarney National Park and Mangerton were likened to “a busy day on Grafton St” so packed with families and walkers trying to get out from the restrictions of the new norm of self-isolation. As there’s no medical cure for this rampant pandemic, which now sees an estimated 900m globally self-isolating, the only measures we can take are to stay at home and away from others – according to medical experts. Confirmed COVID-19 cases in Ireland now stand at over 1,500 – just shy of a month since the first Irish case was revealed on Saturday, February 29. On Wednesday, Gardai with their new powers arrested a youth in Waterford for coughing into peoples’ faces, while in Clontarf, Dublin a young children’s nurse just off a night shift out for a run, and two elderly people, were left shocked after a gang of 15 youths coughed in their faces as part of a perverted social media stunt. If we are to rid this country of this highly infectious plague then each of us has to take responsibility within our own families and communities – it’s the only way. New powers have been afforded to Gardai and in Killarney there’ll be an increased presence of garda members on the streets near civic amenities. Groups of youths of up to five or six are still con-

gregating together in various areas and local gardai are appealing to parents to self-regulate the situation by keeping them at home. As for the Government, they have really stepped up to the mark this week, announcing that all non-essential retail outlets are to close, schools, universities and childcare centres will remain closed until April 19, outdoor gatherings reduced to four unless from the same family, that caravan parks are to close, and there’ll be an increased presence of Park Rangers to stop large gatherings. Private and public hospitals will operate as one under Section 38 of the Health Act – freeing up at least 2,000 more beds. In a bid to support workers and employers they have also put in place new income support payments which are now increased from €203 to €350 per week for the duration of the pandemic emergency. Revenue will operate a Temporary Wage Subsidy Scheme which will enable employees, whose employers are affected by the pandemic, to receive significant supports directly from their employer through the payroll system. The scheme is expected to last 12 weeks from yesterday (Thursday). These measures will be costly – with an initial estimated bill of €3.7 billion over a 12 week period - and while everyone hasn’t been catered for just yet – I have no doubt that as issues arise they will address them as we are all in this together.

NEW RECRUITS: Two of the 15 new firefighters, pictured with Senior Assistant Chief Fire Officer Maurice O’Connell, will be based in Killarney.

Two new retained Fire Fighters for Killarney Kerry Fire and Rescue Service has strengthened its force with the recruitment of 15 additional personnel - two to be based in Killarney. The new retained fire fighters are to replace recent and upcoming retirements and departures within the Fire Service and will take up posts at the various fire stations across the county. The new recruits will also provide a level of resilience for the Fire Service in the event of any requirements for support during the COVID-19 crisis. The recruitment will ensure that Kerry County Council will continue to provide a quality and effective Fire and Rescue Service to the community. Retained fire fighters help protect the local community and respond to emergency incidents including fires, road traffic collisions and other specialist calls. “These fire fighters have completed extensive training in recent weeks including Recruit Fire Fighting training and Road Traffic Collision Procedures train-

ing,” Senior Assistant Chief Fire Officer, Maurice O’Connell, said. “They have all worked exceptionally hard in their training and their achievements are well deserved.” The training was carried out by Kerry Fire and Rescue Service’s own specialist instructors and the calibre of the fire fighters is a testament to the remarkable hard work and dedication of both the instructors and of the recruits themselves, he added. “Training continued over recent weekends and on St Patrick’s Day in an effort to bring the new personnel on stream as quickly as possible. Fire fighters provide a vital service to the communities they serve and I have no doubt that these new fire fighters joining our ranks will continue to uphold that proud service.”

Visitor restrictions at nursing units Visiting has been temporarily paused at all Kerry Community Healthcare hospitals and nursing units – due to COVID-19. The HSE said they wish to thank the public for their ongoing support as all parts of the health services respond to the crisis. ‘Taking into consideration public health guidance and the increasing number of confirmed cases of COVID-19, we had

to make the difficult decision that no visiting can be allowed to community hospitals and community nursing units i.e. residential services for older people’, the HSE said. ‘This is a temporary measure and will be kept under constant review. Families can contact the manager of each unit if they have concerns’. The HSE added that they will work to make sure that residents keep in contact with their loved ones by other means.

New measures to protect Kerry Mountain Rescue Given the high numbers of people observed out on Kerry mountains at the weekend one local life-saving group has had to make some difficult choices.

APPEAL: Civic leaders and the emergency services across the county, have joined together to appeal to the public to continue with social distancing, hand hygiene and other advice from the HSE. Pictured: Mayor of Kerry Niall Kelleher.

“It’s a time for community and solidarity”

The people of Kerry can help to save lives by slowing the spread of COVID-19, but it will take a sustained and focussed effort from the entire community. That’s the message from civic leaders and the emergency services across the county, who have joined together to appeal to the public to continue to heed messages on social distancing, hand hygiene and other advice from the HSE. An Garda Síochána, the Health Service Executive and Kerry County Council continue working together through long-standing cross-county major emergency structures involving agencies in Cork and Kerry to prepare and respond to the needs of communities. The joint message from the Mayor of Kerry, HSE representatives and senior Gardaí is clear – everyone must play a role in the days ahead to defend Kerry against the spread of COVID-19. “I am appealing to the sense of community and solidarity for which we are renowned in Kerry," Mayor of Kerry, Cllr Niall Kelleher said. "At a time of challenge and adversity, I am encouraging all our citizens to look out for the vulnerable members of our community, support our friends and neighbours and show solidarity with those on the front line who are working every available hour to restrict the spread of the coronavirus." HSE management said they have been overwhelmed by the support from the people of Kerry to date. Gerry O’Dwyer, CEO of South-South

West Hospital Group added that the South-South West Hospital Group would like to reassure all the people in Kerry and the surrounding region that they are working non-stop to deal with the impact of COVID-19. "Every possible arrangement is being made and we would like to thank the public for their continued support in these unprecedented times." Fearghal Grimes, General Manager of University Hospital Kerry (UHK) said there has been a massive response from the people of Kerry to the challenge we are facing. "This is a difficult time, but we will get through this together – even if that means staying apart." Dr Augustine Pereira, Director of Public Health for HSE South explained the efforts which all HSE services are involved in and thanked the public for their support, while Chief Superintendent Eileen Foster added that they have restructured the deployment of resources, so that personnel are available to respond to community policing needs. "The Kerry Division will see an allocation of eight newly attested probationer Gardaí to assist in policing and responding to the policing needs of our community. If any member of the public is in need of assistance, don’t be afraid to call your local Garda station,” she added.

Due to COVID-19, Kerry Mountain Rescue Team are asking walkers to forego their enjoyment of the hills for the moment and to stick to lowland paths and walkways, while strictly observing social distancing principles – otherwise, they say that a time could come when the team may not be able to respond at all. “When calling out the Team to an incident, our first priority has to be the safety of Team members and their families,” Colm Burke, PRO, KMRT, said. “We are all volunteers, many of whom live with and care for 'vulnerable' people at home and in our working lives. If you call 999 and ask for Mountain Rescue, we will of course do what we can, however, if you are uninjured, lost or benighted, you will be asked to consider waiting until morning, and/or better visibility to extricate yourself. If you are 'walking wounded' you will be asked to consider extricating yourself from the mountain. If you are seriously injured, and/or not physically able to get yourself off the hill, we will attend with the absolute minimum of team members

needed to complete the task. Because of this, the evacuation will be less straightforward and the overall time to transport you to medical attention will be much longer.” Helicopter support will only be requested if a time critical injury is sustained, he added. “While contrary to everything Kerry Mountain Rescue believe in, these measures are necessary to protect Team members and their families at this time. COVID-19 is a very serious threat and it’s time everyone faced up to their responsibilities in order to limit the spread of the virus. Government guidelines have been very clear about physical distancing and many people have chosen to ignore this, putting everyone at risk.” He explained that by its very nature, mountain rescue requires close contact between both rescuers and casualty, exposing everyone to the risk of infection. “Remember, we could also infect you! Our already over-burdened hospitals don’t need or want any avoidable admissions over this difficult period. Let's all put our shoulder to the wheel now and do our bit. Be responsible, stop the spread. Remember, the mountains will always be there.”

BE RESPONSIBLE: Kerry Mountain Rescue Team are asking walkers to forego their enjoyment of the hills for the moment due to COVID-19.

New Kerry community advisory group to coordinate community response A newly formed Kerry group aims to contribute to the community-wide effort to limit the spread of COVID-19. Ireland’s National Action Plan on COVID-19 (Coronavirus) has tasked local authorities and other agencies to work closely with the Department of Community and Rural Development to coordinate the community and volunteering response to the current public health emergency. A new COVID-19 Kerry Community Response Advisory Group has been established to coordinate how volunteers are managed and targeted to ensure that vulnerable members of the community can avail of a trusted and coordinated support service over the coming weeks and months.

THE NEW GROUP INCLUDES REPRESENTATIVES OF THE FOLLOWING ORGANISATIONS: • Health Service Executive • Kerry County Council

• An Garda Síochána • Kerry Red Cross • Kerry Civil Defence • Kerry Volunteer Centre • North East and West Kerry • Development • S outh Kerry Development Partnership • I RD Duhallow •K erry GAA •K erry Public Participation Network (representing 700 approx. community groups in Kerry) •K erry Age Friendly Network • L ocal Link Kerry •C itizens Information Service The new group’s core aim is contributing to the community-wide effort to limit the spread of COVID-19. The group wants to harness the energy and generosity of people who have come forward to offer support to people in the community who require assistance and advice. The aim is to ensure that a coordinated, safe and reliable volunteer support network is available to those in need and that people in

need of that assistance know who to contact for advice. Its work will complement much of the voluntary work which already taking place in communities across Kerry. The Advisory Group is currently dis-

cussing how best to coordinate an inter-agency volunteer-based service to those in need of support at this time and will announce details of structures and arrangements in that regard over the coming days.

Columnist ANNE LUCEY gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry and beyond

We are living in a strange new changed world

Part of me looks on in disbelief at myself as I queue for the bleach, which is limited to one purchase at a time. We will all have a new perspective on things, though they won’t last, and part of me hopes it won't because these are daily dark reckonings. I spent much of Mothering Sunday listening to RTE Radio One where the universal language of music replaced the sectoral language of sport. “We’ll meet again..” had me singing along on a day that the singer Vera Lynn - still around at 103, tried to keep us going once more. Her battle of Britain song is the anthem again of this era of scary pictures of Italian coffins, of funerals without loved ones, of daughters not being able to say goodbye to their mamas. In Vera’s heyday, people could huddle together in pubs and theatres; but our current war has us alone with virtual communication - it is solidarity in isolation. Something we have been building up towards in one way or another in our Internet world, but something very different to the blue skies over Dover, even, I suspect when this is all over. Wish lists are being drawn up I have no doubt for when this is all over. Wouldn’t it be nice if RTE Radio One could stick to the lazy lyrics on Sunday afternoons, rather than the barking voices of competition? There are other things we will be re-thinking, hopefully, like the county co-ordination committee looking in on our elderly.

We might also bring back the shop counter, the old high wide counters like we had in the Co-op and TTs when I was a child, and men in biscuit-brown coat overalls would serve you from their safe retreat and cut the chord for the bacon parcels with their thumbs, without any scissors, and the biscuits would be stored in tins - tempting but safe behind glass covers, and apricot coloured tissue wrapped the bread. And there would be banter and sometimes dressing downs from Mrs A and Ms B, like tennis balls being served back and forth over the wide counter from witting assistants. Children were barely able to reach the tops of those counters, and would rest their chins and sometimes too their teeth. And cows came through Micksey Hurleys wall where my child’s mind added the nearness of the slaughterhouse, the cow jumping over the moon, and horned head on the red tiles which seemed to be coming through and the life was nearly frightened out of me! It is a safe bet that with better hygiene to the fore, the counter and maybe even the local slaughterhouse will make a return.

CLIMATE CHANGE

But I recoil at the climate change brigade, some of them, celebrating on social media that a virus has done what they have been trying to do. It is in extreme bad taste and reminds us just because there is a grain of accuracy in it, it is not the whole truth. I also recoil at the Sergeant Majors go-

Part of me looks on in disbelief at myself as I queue for the bleach, which is limited to one purchase at a time.

We are living in a changed world, a world where Domestos not diamonds - is a girl’s best friend - for now anyway.

ing around pointing the finger – there is puritanical streak in some of us which would close all the pubs forever; never again see horse racing, and maybe keep the elderly and the young and “vulnerable” in their places. I don’t like the way we have parcelled away those who can and cannot get the virus, or the way we shout and roar about teenagers gathering together. A lot of it is innocence and the natural desire to huddle. We are all guilty of feeling invulnerable at times and it is what keeps us human. And the mixed messages of the World Health Organisation (WHO) needs addressing too. I would like to see the evidence for much of what is being put about – like children are carriers, that dogs are not, and when this thing actually started. I would really like to be convinced this thing or a strain of it has not been around for a lot longer, like that strange flu that knocked some of us out before Christmas – what was that? We may have gone to the moon and back, but we still have no cure for the common cold - not to mind this virus, and that is something that perhaps is the biggest dressing down of all in our global virtual world.

SUPPORT

KILLARNEY

Tourism is so vulnerable Killarney must not only be kept clean but to the fore. Cllr Niall 'Botty' O’Callaghan is calling for Fitzgerald Stadium in Killarney to be a COVID-19 test centre locally, and he is correct. The only test centre as I write this is in Tralee. The loss of the Kerry South Constituency is being keenly felt now, along with the loss of the clout of the town council. Thankfully, the rates as called for in this column, have been frozen, but going forward what will the measures be to address what is to be a disaster for Killarney? The lack of public investment and the slack from the local authority and the State will have to be addressed urgently, and the investment will have to be more than elsewhere in this county. Most jobs in Killarney depend on tourism. It is the hardest hit of all towns in Kerry. Tralee and other places have massive public sector jobs – Council, health, the IT, you name it. As I have stated before, a devotion from Council headquarters in terms of staffing and commitment that is second to none in terms of drawing down State grants and attention, is needed. Now that tourism has been shown up to be so vulnerable and that the pot of gold is really the end of the moving rainbow - there will have to be not just an equal share for Killarney which has been left behind in terms of public investment, but a greater share. We might start with a campaign to buy St Finan's.

Ireland is now a changed society because of COVID - 19 Fine Gael are playing a blinder. They slipped up by allowing the Italians into Ireland for the rugby and didn't advise people to stay away from Cheltenham. People would have stayed away if there had been strong advice. But to be fair, the country is taking their hats off to the Fine Gael led

Government’s handling of what is a different country since then in only a few short weeks, and a country which needs a steady hand. Sulking, naturally, after a kicking in the election, there was a missed opportunity to arrest the virus, quite literally, by stopping flights and ferries on the island. While Charlie Flanagan may have lost

the election for Fine Gael with a slip up, combined with very poor timing for a General Election in the after Christmas period, and the housing crisis escalating, the blue front row when they chose to line out have been faultless. Locally, Brendan Griffin has shown his mettle and his teeth in crying treason to any landlord demanding rent from any tenant impacted by COVID-19.

My advice to Fine Gael now, is hold tough! Whatever Government gets in will have a hard ask economically. Because things have changed so much we need a new election. It is a changed society, a changed economy and the people will have to be asked once more who is it they trust to lead us through. There will have to be an election - no question.

Crowds queue before McDonald’s closure Killarney’s McDonald’s on Park Road was the latest business casualty to close its doors this week – with crowds flocking for a last minute meal before its Monday evening closure. | By Grigoriy Geniyevskiy Since 1977 McDonald’s has been serving the Irish people, however due to COVID-19 they took the decision to close their Irish and UK branches for the foreseeable future saying it’s not a decision they took “lightly” but was one “made with the well-being and safety of our employees in mind as well as the best interests of our customers”. Chief Executive Officer of McDonald's UK and Ireland, Paul Pomroy, said that it become clear that maintaining safe

KDYS created a YouTube video ‘I'm in & Staying In - Social Distancing Young People of Kerry & Italy Speak Out 2020’ with a very important message for their peers and for all people – as part of their fight against COVID-19. KDYS Youth Worker Michelle O’Neill coordinated a determined group of Kerry young people who partnered with Italian young people on an international exchange through KDYS European Youth Centre ‘eurOg’ in Killarney last year. “KDYS is partnering with young people to play a vital role in protecting our com-

munities,” she said. “The highly infectious nature of the virus makes us all a potential threat to each other if we don’t observe the critical health guidelines.” She added that in the course of this, a great deal of attention has fallen on young people and stories of them gathering in groups throughout towns and villages. “This has invoked a lot of frustration and anger towards young people but we should be careful not to single them out as the main culprits. We are asking all young people and adults to be heroes and save lives by pledging to ‘I’m in and I’m staying in’. social distancing whilst operating busy takeaway and Drive Thru restaurants had become increasingly difficult. Even the ability to order online has been shut down. “It’s very hard to say when we will be open again,” Janek, one of the business managers of Killarney’s McDonalds told the Killarney Advertiser. “The decision was made from the head office and all places are closed in the UK and Ireland. Last year we shut down because of renovation, but nothing like this has happened before.”

Tadhg’s new clothing range will get you giddy! | By Michelle Crean In order to diversify due to loss of business over the COVID-19 health crisis – one Killorglin company has come up with a new brand of clothing and merchandise to catch peoples’ imaginations. Using staff member Tadhg Fleming’s high social media profile - whose bat video reached over 3.8m views - The Brand Geeks have this week created the range based on the influencer’s famous comedy antics including his ‘Alepsa’ sketches.

NEW RANGE: Chris McGillycuddy (Head Geek) and Tadhg Fleming (Social Media Geek) from The Brand Geeks have launched their new 'Giddy Goats' clothing and merchandise range.

Tadhg and his co-workers came up ‘Giddy Goat Clothing and Merch’ for adults and children after brain storming due to the rapid decline in business with the spread of COVID-19.

Head Geek, Chris McGillycuddy, says he wanted to find a way to keep all five full-time jobs going. “We have had X amount of business dropping off with so many businesses on pause at the moment,” Chris told the Killarney Advertiser. “We want to keep the job going and we had this idea on the backburner but we were too busy up until now. Tadhg has a massive profile and he’s a great team player. We have a few more influencers lined up but we’re not ready to reveal them just yet.” The website www.giddygoat.ie is only up online a week but is getting massive traction, he added. “We’re getting a great reaction so far.”

Personal distancing signage to be erected A meeting of Kerry County Council management and representatives of the political parties and Independents took place Tuesday morning to continue the coordination of the Council’s response to the current public health emergency. The meeting observed personal distancing requirements and some participants

joined the meeting by teleconference. Elected members and Council management reiterated their appeal to members of the public to observe the advice and guidelines of the HSE and the health authorities. In particular, there is a renewed request to members of the public to observe personal distancing guidelines both indoors and outdoors. Signage will be erected at a number of beaches and public amenities around the county to remind people of the personal distancing requirements of two metres. The meeting discussed ongoing business continuity planning for the provision of Council services as the current public health emergency evolves. To support efforts to limit the spread of COVID-19, the Council is asking members of the public to communicate with its staff and services, as far as possible, by phone and email. Full details of all of the Council’s services are available on www. kerrycoco.ie and the Council’s main contact number is 066 7183500.

Tasty cake bags Laura third place in All-Ireland bake off | By Michelle Crean A Fifth Year student in St Brigid’s school served up such a treat that she secured third place in the senior category of the Ceist All-Ireland Bake Off recently. Laura Looney was one of seven senior students shortlisted from CEIST schools throughout Ireland to take part, and wowed judges at the bake off in Ardscoil na Trionoide, Athy, Co Kildare on Friday, March 6. Each student had three hours to bake and decorate their masterpieces to reflect the theme of ‘Community’, and the standard was exceptionally high. The judges on the day were Edward Hayden from TV3 and a local baker. The cakes were judged under three criteria: taste, texture and appearance. Laura, who baked a delicious three tier coffee cake, which she decorated with piped buttercream icing in an array of colours, based her cake on LGBTQ+. “When I heard of the competition many ideas filled my head from my school and rowing club,” Laura, who is baking since she was aged six, said. “I then thought of some of my friends who are members of the LGBTQ+ community. I felt it was a way to honour their courage. When they called my name for third place I became speech-

ADVERTISER a so g y c ia l h is t o r

Founded by visionary Danny Casey. The very first edition of Killarney Advertiser came off the presses in March 1973. Locals delighted in the fact that one of their own created what was in effect Killarney’s own Facebook – decades before the internet was born. The Killarney Advertiser was and remains the town’s “bible”… but ask anyone who has grown up in or spent time living in our town – Killarney Advertiser has always been much more even than that. With over 10,000,000 copies delivered, the Killarney Advertiser has become an institution over the course of nearly half a century. Through recessionary times, national emergencies and more, the Killarney Advertiser has been published, every Friday like clockwork. The professionalism of the staff and the finished product each Friday is an indictment of the legacy left by Danny and his family. So, through these challenging times let’s look back together at a selection of pages from over the decades.

Olympic Games postponed to 2021 The Olympic Federation of Ireland (OFI) has welcomed the decision to postpone the summer Olympic Games to 2021, considering the current global crisis. Given the fast developments around the world with the COVID-19 pandemic makes this the correct decision under difficult circumstances, OFI has said.

Trump CORNER

The focus for Team Ireland now will be on protecting and safeguarding the Irish athletes over the coming months and ensuring that they can bounce back to full training and be in peak condition for successful Games in 2021. The Olympic Federation of Ireland CEO, Peter Sherrard welcomed the call, acknowledging the complexities involved in postponing the Games. “This is the right call given the times that

we are in," he said. "Nonetheless we recognise it was a difficult call for Japan to make, and we are looking forward to working with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and countries all over the world to make Tokyo 2021 a poignant moment for the whole world once these difficult times are over.” Tokyo Chef de Mission Tricia Heberle added, that this decision, while totally appropriate, will impact on sport and athletes in different ways. "There will be mixed emotions," she said. "Our focus is to continue to engage with and support our sports as we gather as much information to determine how this will impact on both athletes who have already qualified and those who are on the path to qualification.”

Trump trolls Senator Mitt Romney and Joe Biden President Trump taunted Mitt Romney on Wednesday after Utah's senator tested negative for Coronavirus. He initially cheered after hearing the news before criticising his record as a presidential nominee and Congress member. In the president's tweet he said, "This is really great news! I am so happy I can barely speak. He may have been a terrible presidential candidate and an even worse U.S. Senator, but he is a RINO, and I like him a lot!" RINO stands for ‘Republican In Name

Only’, a term used by conservative Republicans to characterise members that are not very conservative. Romney was the only Republican senator who voted to convict Trump in his impeachment trial. Romney was tested on Monday and received negative results late Tuesday, but said he would stay quarantined. "Thankfully, I tested negative for COVID-19," Romney tweeted. "Nevertheless, guidance from my physician, consistent with CDC guidelines, requires me to remain in quarantine

Nathan told the Killarney Advertiser that he thinks all the attention is “crazy” as he was just playing his normal game of football in his back garden. “There is so many people reacting to it David De Gea, Juan Mata and Wan Bissaka. as the test does not rule out the onset of symptoms during the 14-day period." When Trump first heard of Romney’s possible exposure he said “Romney’s in isolation? Gee, that’s too bad”. When asked if his commentary contained sarcasm, he said: "No, none at all." Trump also trolled Biden with a video of Joe being scolded for coughing into his hand during an interview, instead of into his elbow, and ignoring virus advice. Later in response Trump tweeted “The Democrat’s Best & Finest!” Whether it was his coughing or remarks about Trump himself, it's unclear what Trump was trying to dig at Biden for.

'Comfort Words' bonds children and nursing home residents

EU takes action to procure life-saving medical equipment The EU is to buy medical equipment for hospitals totalling €50 million, including tests, masks and respiratory ventilators. Parliament is working with member states to ensure that the EU can buy ventilators, masks and other medical equipment to be put at the disposal of hospitals across the EU. Last week, the Commission set up a scheme to gather medical equipment through rescEU so that the necessary supplies to combat COVID-19 can quickly get to member states facing shortages of equipment. This equipment is needed to treat infected patients, protect health care workers and help slow down the spread of the virus. Parliament is working with member states to swiftly approve 40 out of 50 million Euro for intensive care medical equipment such as ventilators and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as reusable masks. Member states are also joining forces un-

der the Joint Procurement Agreement to buy personal protective equipment, respiratory ventilators and items necessary for coronavirus testing. Working together in this way will give them a stronger position on the world market. Commenting on the Commission’s proposal, the Chair of the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety Committee, Pascal Canfin (Renew, FR) said: “Last week, Europe took several historic decisions to counter COVID-19, including its impact on the EU economy. We do not say this enough and we do not say it loud enough. Europe is doing everything it can to save lives. The EU Civil Protection Mechanism has previously saved EU citizens in the midst of earthquakes, hurricanes and floods and fighting forest fires. We are now, for the very first time, using EU funds under rescEU to support member states efforts to combat the virus by ensuring we have much needed medical and protective equipment. It is EU solidarity in action.”

Nursing Homes Ireland (NHI has launched 'Comfort Words', a national initiative encouraging children to reach out to older people in nursing homes during COVID-19. With almost 30,000 people across the country in nursing home care, 'Comfort Words' is encouraging children to support older people during this difficult time by writing to them. NHI believes children can fulfil an important role in promoting positivity amongst residents and maintaining contacts in the weeks ahead by connecting with them. “We are launching a national campaign encouraging children to engage in the most traditional form of communication with nursing home residents," Tadhg Daly, NHI CEO, explained. "We’re asking them to write to residents in our nursing homes to connect with these special people and bring a smile to their faces. We want children who know residents in their local nursing homes and also those who don’t know the people living in them to participate. It presents op-

portunity for children who know people in their nursing homes to tell them how much they mean to them and how important they are to them. And children who don’t know anyone in a nursing home can write a letter for all the residents, telling of their appreciation for older people and encouraging them to remain positive during COVID-19. We believe letters to individual and collective residents will bring great comfort and pleasure to people in our nursing homes. 'Comfort Words' can demonstrate the power of inter-generational solidarity during these extraordinary times.” A list of nursing homes is available to download from the Nursing Homes Ireland website. Mr Daly urged children to be mindful of the importance of hygiene in preparing the letters, asking children and their parents to wash their hands prior to preparing. NHI is encouraging the sharing of Comfort Words letters and they can be emailed to michael@nhi.ie or shared on social media under #ComfortWords.

Jack & Jill Children’s Foundation launches virtual gallery Over one thousand artists from 10 countries are contributing work to the INCOGNITO art sale of 1,812 original pieces for the Jack & Jill Foundation. World renowned artists including Bruce & Patti Springsteen, Helen Steele, Paul Costelloe, Duda, Maser, Alice Maher, Bono, Martin Mooney, Dan Chester, Mick O’Dea and Ruthie Ashenhurst are among the contributors. Each piece in the collection costs €50 with the special twist of no one knowing the identity of the artist until after they buy the art. INCOGNITO has attracted the biggest art queues in Ireland over the last three

years but this year it is moving online to avoid social contact problems. Proudly supported by William Fry, the art sale has been adapted to avoid problems with physical queuing, with the postcard-size pieces of original artworks appearing on www.incognito.ie available to view until April 23 after which the sale will go live. Each piece will be sold online to the public on a first-click-first-served basis for €50, and the proud new owners will receive them via post for a €5 postage and packing charge. “We are delighted to launch the INCOGNITO collection, a wonderful initiative now into its fourth year,” Carmel Doyle, CEO of Jack & Jill said.

“We've had to move the sale online this year, but nothing can take away from the wonderful, high quality collection of art donated to Jack & Jill and we are so grateful. With artists from across the country contributing, this is just another example of how, as a nation, we come together to help others. The care provided by the Jack & Jill Children’s Foundation is vital to the lives of the children and families we support and with each piece sold three hours of specialist home nursing care can be provided. Yet again the standard of art is phenomenal and there’s not one piece in the collection that’s not worth €50 alone. We're hoping for another record queue for art this year.”

ART FUNDRAISER: sample of work which will be for sale online for the art sale fundraiser in aid of the Jack & Jill Foundation.

HEALTH & FITNESS Advice - By Brian Foley Brian is available for advice and fitness consultations, Call 087 403 0894 or email info@activate.ie • www.activate.ie

Make the most of this gift of time By now, most of you are spending a significantly higher percentage of your time at home. We’ve all been told to social distance, and told what we are not to do. So I’ve decided to put together a mini guide of what you can use this time for. The reality of this situation will likely be with us for the next two to three months. Right now you have control over certain things in your life and you’ve been given the huge opportunity of time. While yes, this is a big interruption in our normal day-to-day life, there are some positives: 1. B UILD STRUCTURE AND ROUTINE: Whilst not that mind-blowing, the amount of people telling me their nutrition and sleep is out of kilter recently is too high! The sun still rises each morning and sets each evening. Set out a timetable for yourself every day. For example: • 7am: Wake, shower, breakfast • 8am: Homeschooling/work begins • 11am: Coffee break • 1pm: Lunchtime • 4pm: Homeschooling/Work finishes • 4.30pm: Workout • 5.30pm: Dinner • 7pm: Read, boardgames, Netflix • 9.30/10pm: Bed 2. SPEND TIME TOGETHER: We get more time with those we’re closest with. How often are you able to get weeks with our family outside of vacation? For most, the reality is nights and weekends. Now, we get to spend every day with family and get the chance to build and rebuild relationships that will absolutely benefit from more time together. It’s not always easy, family never is, but growing together through things is

how the best relationships are built. 3. STAY ACTIVE You have time to work out. Guess what? You don’t have anywhere to be, which means you have no excuse not to take care of yourself physically. Especially considering the massive immunity and health benefits of exercise in times like this. I’ll put it nicely; go outside or into your garage or living room and workout! Building a habit now will help you maintain it the entire time you are social distancing and in your home. You have the opportunity to come out of this fitter than when you went in. If you already have a coach they will be in contact with you daily, if you don’t, now is a good time to make contact with them, you should have someone to contact every day you work out for accountability. We’re doing Remote Coaching with all our clients they get a phone call, text/App message twice a day on their work out days with a work out designed for them at their house, with their equipment so we can make sure we’re helping them stay their fittest through all of this. Accountability is key, and your friends and family are all in the same boat. Help them by leading! 4. FOCUS ON YOUR HABITS: You have time to cook. So cook more nutritious meals at this time. 5. READ You have time to learn. How many books do you have piled up waiting to be read? How many online courses have you wanted to take but never had time? There are so many opportunities that have just been given to us, we just need to re-focus away from too much media and back onto our families and what we can influence. Take this opportunity to take a deep breath, look around you, realise how lucky you really are, and make the most of this gift of time!

You have your say on UK's lockdown It was a bit unexpected when British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced a full UK-wide lockdown on Monday night which will last for three weeks initially, possibly longer. In the past few weeks he was slow to close schools, restaurants and pubs as COVID-19 began to rapidly spread, so his news to some came as a shock. The new UK rules only allow people out for shopping, travel to and from work, exercising alone and medical needs. So, we asked for your thoughts on our Facebook page and received amazing feedback. Almost all comments are calling for an Irish lockdown after we asked 'Should Ireland follow our UK neighbours - and if so, when?' HERE'S WHAT YOU HAD TO SAY: HELEN CRONIN Absolutely YES IMMEDIATELY This is very serious, alot of people will die, should be done before now. Stay safe & healthy everyone. LINDA KEARIN The lockdown doesn't make sense if people who are working in non essential services still go to work and have unnecessary contact with people. LIAM SPILLERS Tbh I live in the UK and I have been impressed by the measures taken in Ireland to date. Borris has not taken the appropriate actions that Ireland has over the past few weeks. However the crisis that is going to strike a population of over a 60 million here warranted a lock down to occur far earlier as tonight's lockdown and it's lateness has cost lots of lives. Ireland should I agree go into lockdown as of now but to state in any argument that the Irish have been lagging behind Britain is not true. JOHN WHELAN It's too little too late. In two weeks UK will be the same as Italy with over 4,000 dead and rising. He left Cheltenham go ahead with 70,000 daily attending racing when clearly it shouldn't have. Afterwards packed pubs

UK LOCKDOWN: British Prime Minister Boris Johnson pictured announcing the UK lockdown on Monday night.

and no social distancing. The fact that racing wasnt behind closed doors meant 15,000 irish travelled. Unfortunately Ireland will pay for Boris Johnsons mistakes unless we close the borders fast!! Lockdown and lockout!! ENDA WALSHE Wouldn't necessarily follow UKs lead Boris didn't give a fiddlers upto last week. Our country has lead the way in doing it properly.Schools closed 2 weeks ago,Killarney shut down in total, more people per capita tested than nearly every other country while Boris was waffling ....CMO Tony Holohan is giving the best advice...just follow it..lockdown still wont stop stupid people JACKIE FULLARTON To save lives he needs to take immediate action. Stay Safe everyone! ELEANOR DORAN Yea definitely. Should have been done a week ago MARY MCGUIRE O'REGAN Yes now straight away CLAIRE TANGNEY Yes. Immediately. Because there is no changing the stupidity of people. Lockdown is the only way for some. RENA PEACOCKCRAIG Now!!!!!!!! BREDA O'DONOGHUE Absolutely MOCCY FONDOO if it saves lives.... DO IT....!!! BRENDA O'CONNOR Definitely, thought it would be done by now

Recovery Haven GARDEN MAGIC still supporting cancer patients Growing herbs at home is easy Gardening - By Debby Looney

Debby is available for advice and garden consultations, just call 086 6088156 or email barnhillky@gmail.com

With non-essential services across the county choosing to close their doors in the interest of public safety, one local cancer support charity is assuring clients and those feeling anxious and vulnerable that support is still available.

Recovery Haven Kerry Cancer Support House closed its doors to the public two weeks ago, cancelling all drop-in services, group sessions and one-to-one therapies. However, manager Siobhan MacSweeney has moved to assure clients and the general public that support is still available via email and phone, while counselling sessions can still be arranged. “The COVID-19 restrictions mean that unfortunately we have had to temporarily close our doors, but we want to assure the public that we are still here to support them and their families,” Siobhán told the Killarney Advertiser. “We fully recognise that all these added restrictions and isolation measures are causing a lot of concern and distress for cancer patients and their families, so

please be assured that we are still available by phone or email. As well as that, our counsellors are also still available to take appointments, which can again be arranged by calling us.” Anyone wishing to get in touch with Recovery Haven can do so by phoning 066 7192122 from Monday to Thursday, from 10am to 4pm or by emailing siobhan@ recoveryhavenkerry.com. Affiliated to the Irish Cancer Society (ICS), Recovery Haven Kerry is also encouraging those dealing with cancer and their families to keep up to date with expert information and advice concerning the Coronavirus for cancer patients, cancer survivors and their families on the ICS website.

Bank of Ireland's Killarney branch to remain open Bank of Ireland has today (Monday) said it plans to temporarily close 101 branches from tomorrow, while 161 will remain open - including its Killarney branch. The bank took the decision as it has experienced a reduction in footfall in recent weeks in its branches. The banks will continue to provide external ATM cash withdrawal services and normal opening hours will continue in the branches that are open. “Due to the evolving situation we’re making the changes (March 24th) to our branch network to focus on high demand services and locations during COVID-19, the impact on Kerry will be that two locations will temporarily close, these are Killorglin and Castleisland,” Hugh Gleeson, South Kerry Manager with Bank of Ireland, told the Killarney Advertiser today. “We ask all customers affected to please use Killarney, Tralee and Listowel branches where appropriate. These changes refocus our branch network

Hugh Gleeson.

to our larger locations, which will help us support social distancing. This is extremely important for our customers and colleagues, whose safety and well-being is our top priority.” Open branches will continue the provision of priority service for our over 65s and carers – 10am to 11am Monday to Friday, he added.

Growing herbs at home is an excellent way to ensure fresh, tasty meals and drinks. They are also high in levels of vitamins A, C and K in parsley and other leafy herbs, and most herbs contain high levels of polyphenols, which are antioxidants and have shown to combat various diseases, such as heart disease, cancer and Alzheimers. Some herbs, such as mint, rosemary and thyme also aid digestion. All herbs are fairly perishable; basil and coriander only keep a few days in the fridge, though parsley can keep for a week. A good way to store them is to freeze them in ice cube trays in water or stock. Growing herbs at home is easy, though at this time of year I would recommend growing them indoors. I find window boxes are the easiest way to grow, as they tend to dry out much quicker in individual pots. When herbs dry out, they tend to have a bitter taste, and are also very prone to whitefly infestations. Basil is one of the most difficult herbs to grow - they are very prone to mildew, and damp. If sowing, scatter seeds thinly, and cover with a layer of vermiculite, which can be bought in any garden centre. It is an aluminium-iron magnesium silicate which resembles mica. It is used as a top dressing when growing seeds to prevent damping off and rotting. It is anti-fungal and anti-bacterial and I would recom-

mend using it for difficult to grow seeds, such as basil, coriander and any number of flower seeds. Grow basil, dill, coriander, chervil and fenugreek in individual pots, and treat them as a cut once and throw away plant! It can be quite difficult to grow them as long-lasting plants when you cut them. Sow every two weeks to have a constant crop. Leafy green herbs like a good quality soil, normally I use an organic compost, mixed with some perlite for drainage. Many leafy herbs, especially umbellifers (those with umbrella shaped flowers) tolerate shade. Woody herbs, such as rosemary, thyme and lavender prefer full sun and a poor, gritty slightly alkaline soil. If your woody herbs get leggy, which can happen with lavender, sage and rosemary, cut them back by one third. These herbs are slow to regenerate from the woody parts, and it can be worth your while to try a technique called ‘mound layering’. This is a very simple procedure. You merely pack compost around the stems of the plant up to where the leaves start and wait. The plant will produce roots through the woody stems. If it is done at this time of the year you can expect results by June. You will see vigorous growth, and if you gently remove some of the soil you will see root growth. Cut the stem away from the mother plant below the root and replant, making sure to keep it well watered until it settles in.

Rally of the Lakes won’t run on its May weekend date The cartell.ie Rally of the Lakes is the latest event to get postponed after Motorsport Ireland (MI) announced on Friday that motorsport across the country is to be suspended until at least June 1. Plans were at an advanced stage for the May 1 to 3 rally but Killarney and District Motor Club must now wait and see if a date can be secured later in the year. The calendar is already heavily congested towards the back end of the year so it is unlikely the biggest motorsport event in the county will go ahead this season. Kerry Motor Club's Circuit of Kerry, which was due to run on April 5 was postponed before Motorsport Ireland made its announcement on Friday. However, both clubs in the county have confirmed dates in November and De-

cember so if restrictions on sporting events get lifted by the proposed June date rally fans can look forward to the Kerry Winter Rally and the Killarney Historic Rally later in the year. “This date may be revised but we will at all times be guided by Government policy and what is the right thing to do on a national level," said the MI statement. “These are extraordinary times, such as we have not experienced before, but the one thing that is certain is that we will come out of this, unfortunately no one can put a time on when that will be. Our thoughts go out to the victims and their families that the virus has affected and to all those club members who for months have been devoting time and energy to the preparation of their 2020 events. We share their disappointment and wish to express our solidarity and support.”

How to stay safe while using your car Skoda Motorsport have issued the following on how to stay safe while using your car during the current crisis. The whole world is affected by the new Coronavirus global pandemic. The simplest advice for how to stay safe is to stay home, but what if you have to go somewhere by car? Follow this advice;

MINIMISE CONTACT

The main rule is to minimise contact with

others, but if a journey has to be made, protect yourself. “Ideally don’t go anywhere. If you have to go somewhere, go alone – don’t share the car with anyone. If you have to go with someone, make sure that the person does not have acute symptoms of respiratory illness. Use a respirator or at least a facemask. Make sure you have the contact details of all the other passengers so that you can track them down if you find out you’re infected,”

27.3.2020

says Jana Parmová, chief physician at ŠKODA, outlining the basic rules everyone should follow.

PARTS OF THE INTERIOR YOU SHOULD DISINFECT

Take this cleaning very seriously: disinfecting the steering wheel, gearstick, handbrake, door handles, radio and infotainment controls would occur to everyone, but don’t forget the stalks on the steering column such as indicators and windscreen wipers, cruise control, elbow rests, seat position controls, door frames and exterior door handles or luggage compartment handle. These principles are even more important for taxi drivers and other drivers who transport passengers. Alcohol should not damage either leather or imitation leather upholstery, but excessive intensive cleaning with alco-

hol can discolour the material: so don’t scrub the seats and other leather surfaces too hard. Never use hydrogen peroxide which will most likely damage the car’s surfaces. Don’t use cleaning products containing ammonium on touch screens in the car. Micro-fibre cloths are ideal for cleaning all surfaces and for all cleaning methods.

FILLING UP SAFELY

If you absolutely have to go somewhere by car, it’s highly likely that you’ll need to buy fuel sooner or later. Don’t forget to be very careful about hygiene at petrol stations. Minimise contact with the staff. Choose a self-service filling station if you can. After filling up your car, immediately wash your hands or at least disinfect them with a hand disinfectant solution – you should have a sufficient quantity of these in your car.

At the recent Killarney Municipal Area meeting, Councillor Michael Gleeson asked that Kerry County Council would, while the trees are relatively small, undertake the cut back of the re-growth that has occurred on the foundation of the old Flesk Bridge. Kerry County Council replied that they are not the responsible body for maintenance of the Flesk River. Councillor Gleeson stated that local residents believe that uncontrolled growth at this location increases the risk of flooding of their properties and were greatly relieved when the cut back was done some years ago. He asked that the Council would consult with the other involved statutory bodies with a view to identifying a source of finance. The Motion was unanimously agreed. ................................................................

Changes at Ulster Bank Ulster Bank has announced changes to its branch network and further measures to support and protect customers and colleagues during COVID-19. Measures include elderly and carer opening hours, a dedicated vulnerable customer phoneline, a dedicated healthcare and emergency workers phoneline, online form for mortgage assistance. 10 of their Non-Cash Advice Centres are to close temporarily, all Saturday openings are to temporarily cease, as well as their Mobile Bank on Wheels service. Ulster Bank said they are taking the measures in response to restrict unnecessary movement.

Miss Universe Ireland launches finalists search Director of Miss Universe Ireland, Brittany Mason and the previous winners of Miss Universe Ireland, Fionnghuala O’Reilly, Gráinne Gallanagh and Cailín Ní Toibín launched the 2020 search for finalists for this year’s competition which takes place in the Round Room of the Mansion House on Thursday, July 2. Reigning Miss Universe Ireland, Fionnghuala, made history last year as Ireland’s first bi-racial contestant to represent at Miss Universe as well as being the very first NASA datanaut to compete. Cailín, a gaelgóir and Emirates cabin crew member living in Dubai, was the first Irish representative to secure a top 20 placement for Ireland at Miss Universe 2017 since Roz Purcell in 2010.

Gráinne then followed in her footsteps in 2018 making Ireland one of only one of five countries in the world to hold two consecutive final 20 positions. The women’s health nurse recently competed in RTÉ’s ‘Dancing with the Stars’. This year’s competition aims to make history once again and bring home the first Miss Universe crown to Ireland. The lucky 2020 winner will walk away with over €70,000 worth of prizes and will go on to represent Ireland at Miss Universe 2020. Advice for exam students getting into the stride of remote learning The current restrictions around social distancing due to the COVID-19 has meant that both teachers and students have had to adjust to teaching and learning remotely. The sudden change in how we teach and you learn has brought challenges and opportunities for all of us, including the technology itself, lack of or indeed outdated devices at home, restricted or poor quality broadband, increased screen time use, and most of all the lack of face to face daily contact which facilitates active classroom engagement, questioning, clarification, discussion and ongoing feedback. On the other hand, opportunities exist for teachers and students to engage much more with teaching and learning in the digital context enabling us all to up skill at a faster rate than if we were all still in classrooms together every day. It has facilitated an extensive sharing of resources on the ever growing number of educational companies, publishers and social-networking sites that have made their publications, products, Apps and platforms available free of charge to all during the crisis. And of course there is the advantage to you students as you become increasingly competent as independent learners which will bring enormous benefits as you move on into senior cycle and

was put in place by the school. Some schools are conducting classes as per the normal school day on Google Classroom or Microsoft Teams. Others are doing classes at different times or are allocating work on a daily basis. Whatever the case, log in early in the morning, check what work needs to be done and submitted or what classes you have, and make a list. Factor in breaks just as you would in school. Stay off social media while engaged in school work online, you will get distracted and it will take twice as long and may fall below your normal standard.

into the third-level education and the world of work. Working technologically can save us time and rob us of it so for those of you in Third Year and Sixth Year who are really trying to focus your attention on preparing for your written papers in June.

THE FOLLOWING TIPS MIGHT HELP:

Plan out your day according to what

Try not to get overwhelmed by all the resources that are now available. Focus on the advice and recommendations of your teachers and stick to the sites that you would have used before such as www.examinations.ie, www.studyclix.ie, www.scoilnet.ie, or sites specific to your subjects. The publishers of the exam papers have also granted free access to the papers, marking schemes and sample answers so you will have plenty of high quality content to complement what your teacher has done and is going with you.

Education continues for local pupils | By Michelle Crean Pupils from Holy Cross Mercy Primary School are not missing out on school work as teachers are continuing with classes online via the school’s Seesaw App. The aim is to keep pupils up to date with the curricular schemes previously planned but also to keep an air of calm and provide learning with a sense of fun at this time. “Children don’t need the worry, so routine and the normal every day activities they're used to are so important for their health and development right now,” teacher Rhonda Healy told the Killarney Advertiser. “It’s wonderful as so far they’ve been really engaging with all of our tutorials and tasks through the App and we are checking in with them and their parents each day. Each week I have assigned ‘Wow Work’ such as a project or some larger task and a number of mini lessons which include some video links and tutorials featuring my own voice and I assign tasks for the pupils cover-

ing each of my curricular subjects.” She added that this week her Sixth Class pupils are making a movie trailer for a book they would like or recommend to their fellow classmates. “Next week they will do a digital black and white photography bundle to depict the story of their next seven days in this unprecedented time in our history.” Other tasks and suggestions the school has shared with families provides for offline time and a re-direct from the ONLINE LEARNING: Holy Cross Mercy School Teacher Rhonda Healy preparing work to give to her pupils online.

screen time. They included: Socially distanced nature walks with scavenger hunts for items from nature, creating mandalas outdoors with natural items found in nature, reading novels for pleasure, watching some cartoons and documentaries on TG4, playing some card games to encourage revision of table facts, making pencil sketches of still life available for observation at home such as a bowl of fruit or a vase of flowers or a plant from the

garden, writing a fantasy story, making models and engineering STEM activities such as Lego and robotics where available. “Our children have most of their schoolbooks at home so it’s no harm to use this time to choose a topic or two each day to revise. They could read over with a parent at home and then discuss what has been read or create a project, drama, diary entry or mind map based on it.” Other ideas include making up their own dance routines and performing them with their siblings, creating a garden obstacle course or relay race, making up their own songs and poetry, baking together as a family, and writing up and sharing those recipes too. She added that they’re very grateful to Irish educational publishers who made the online editions available for free as well as other companies who offer educational Apps and websites. “They have made our job in remote teaching and learning so much easier. Please God we will all be back safely in the classrooms before long.”

SHEEHY

In fond remembrance of a dear neighbour Micheál Kenny, Kenmare Road Muckross who died on March 27th 2012.

Today’s just one of many days that will always make us sad, For we know it’s too late to say the things we wish we had, We wish we told you far more often that we cared, And that we were so grateful for all the happy times we shared.

What I would give if I could say, I’ll call and see you on my way, To hear your voice and see you smile, To sit and talk to you a while, To laugh and joke as we used to do, A wonderful friend that was you.

And time’s passed since the day you left but still we’re asking why, You couldn’t have stayed for longer and we had to say goodbye, And now your birthday is here all there’s left to do, Is hope that heaven lets you know how much we are missing you.

MCCARTHY

In loving memory of a wonderful husband, Donal O’Sullivan late of 85 Ardshanavooley Killarney who sadly departed from this world on the 28th March 2009, aged 61. Masses offered. A thousand words could never say, How much I miss you every single day, My thoughts are always with you, Your place no one can fill, In life I loved you dearly, In death I love you still. I know you walk beside me, And when my life is through, I pray that God will take my hand, And lead me straight to you. So dearly loved and sadly missed by your loving wife Nor. xxx Dad Though your smile is gone forever, And your hand we cannot touch, Still we have so many memories, Of the one we loved so much, Your memory is our keepsake, With which we’ll never part, God has you in His keeping, We have you in our hearts. Loved and missed every day From your son Padraig, Elaine, Lauren, Jason, Adam and Rebekah. Rest In Peace xxxx It’s been eleven long years since I saw your face, Heard your voice, you bought a pint or watched a race. Though life goes on without you, It will never be the same. In God’s care you rest above, In my heart you rest with love. Rest in peace Dad. Loved and remembered by your loving son Gerard & Jenny. xxx The moment that you died, My heart was torn in two, One side filled with heartache, The other died with you. I often lie awake at night When the world is fast asleep, And take a trip down memory lane, With tears upon my cheeks. 1ST ANNIVERSARY MCCARTHY

To the priest for the beautiful Mass. As it would be impossible to thank everyone, please accept this acknowledgement as a token of our thanks. When we lost you We wish we could see you one more time, Come walking through the door, But we know that is impossible, We will hear your voice no more, We know you can feel our tears, And you don’t want us to cry, Yet our hearts are broken, Because we can’t understand, Why someone so precious had to die. We pray that God will give us strength, And somehow get us through, As we struggle with the heartache, that came when we lost you.

In loving memory of Sean McCarthy, late of Ballyspillane and Killarney, who died on 31st March 2019 Somewhere beyond the sunset, Where loved ones never die, You sleep in a beautiful garden, Beneath a golden sky, Though Heaven and earth divide us, We are never far apart, For you are always in our thoughts, And forever in our hearts. Always remembered by Sheila, Johann and Cian and family.

Deeply missed and fondly remembered, Dad, Marian and Saoirse, Sister Aisling, Caoinlean and Faye. Sean’s first anniversary mass will be celebrated March 28th at 6:15pm in St. Mary’s Cathedral.
