There are changes in the pipeline for Killarney roads in the coming months councillors at a Special Meeting of Killarney Municipal District were told this week. Those in attendance were updated on works for big projects such as Killarney Bypass and Lewis Road/Kilcummin Junction and proposed Active Travel Link and underpass, the Farranfore to Killarney Road Improvement Scheme, Madam's Hill, MD O'Shea Roundabout to Ballycasheen Junction and the Glenflesk Traffic Calming Scheme amongst others.
FARRANFORE TO KILLARNEY ROUTE
Senior Engineer Paul Curry made a presentation on the Farranfore to Killarney Road Improvement Scheme saying that the Phase 2 Options Selection is underway with a number of route corridors currently being considered and appraised with the "emerging preferred route corridor to be selected in Q3 2022". He said that the Farranfore to Killarney route was "a major scheme", that a public consultation took place last year where a "number of options went on display".

Changes in the pipeline for Killarney roads These, he said, are currently being appraised and a report is being prepared. The report will be reviewed in the next four weeks or so. The emerging preferred route corridor will go on display for a period of four weeks in August or September to seek feedback from the public. After this a report on the findings will be published in October/November.
LEWIS ROAD/KILCUMMIN JUNCTION
Plans for the proposed underpass on the Killarney Bypass within the grounds of St Finan's Hospital, will be published by the end of July. The much awaited left-turn only from the Lewis Road junction and N22 Bypass Road will begin construction in August. When completed traffic leaving Lewis Road will no longer be allowed to cross the Bypass Road. Instead motorists will
have to turn left and make a U-turn at the Cleeney Roundabout. Traffic exiting the Kilcummin Road will also be left turn only with motorists having to make their way to the Michael D O’Shea Roundabout at the sports centre before doing a U-turn.
MADAM'S HILL
As part of the Active Travel plans traffic lights are to be installed at the Aghadoe Junction which he said are "more friendly for pedestrians and cyclists". There will also be enhanced pedestrian footpaths on both sides coming down to the Cleeney roundabout.
BALLYDOWNEY TO GORTROE
In the Ballydowney to Gortroe Safety Improvement Scheme he said that the TII are awaiting results from a deer safety trial measure in Laois and if this is successful
Dedicated fire helicopter for National Park The National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) will have better access to fire-fighting helicopters in the future to help deter any potential fires. This follows an investigation into the April 2021 fires that destroyed thousands of acres of scrubland and natural habitat in the National Park.
The three-day fire was eventually brought under control by five helicopters, three of which were operated by the Air Corps and two were privately owned. One of the key findings of the investigation was the delay in getting the helicopters to the scene. At a recent Kerry County Council meeting Killarney-based politician Patrick Connor Scarteen asked: “What extra measures
have been put in place to protect our National Pak in Killarney from fire?” A Kerry County Fire Service official told the meeting that it had introduced new initiatives including extra ground patrol, static and mobile surveillance equipment. “Specialist thermal surveillance equipment has been provided to the NPWS rangers and staff along with the retention
similar measures could be implemented in Killarney as an interim solution. Plans are to reduce vegetation in the first five to 10 metres which "won't draw the deer to the road". He added that further discussions are needed however with the National Parks and Wildlife Service.
GLENFLESK TRAFFIC CALMING
Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) said they will install bigger speed signs in Glenflesk Village to "see if it makes a difference". "We are going to change the speed indicator signs and make them bigger to see if it makes much of a difference," he said. "We have been recording speed in Glenflesk for the best part of the last 12 months. "In the meantime we're going to make the speed indicator signs the next size up." by NPWS of a ‘first call’ helicopter [with] air fire-fighting capability to fight any fires immediately on detection and the deployment of extensive aerial surveillance in the National Park this year with NPWS staff undertaking surveillance in helicopters and also surveillance by drones, on a regular and ongoing basis over the last months – especially at times of higher fire risk.” Kerry County Council said its staff sought advice from rangers from the Glacier Mountain National Park in Montana, USA.

Jessie set for big screen in new horror movie | By Michelle Crean Killarney actress Jessie Buckley is set to hit the big screens across Irish cinemas on June 3 in new horror 'Men' which will keep viewers on the edge of their seats.
RECORD: Stephen Byrne, the man who introduced Majella Moloney to parkrun, was at the finish line in Borrisokane to present her with a certificate to mark her achievement.
Killarney woman completes every parkrun in the country A Killarney woman has entered the record books after completing every parkrun in the country – and more. | By Sean Moriarty There are one hundred open parkruns in Ireland and a further three that take place behind closed doors in prisons and in health institutions and Majella Moloney has completed all of them. On Saturday last she completed the Irish list by finishing the Borrisokane run in County Offaly. She was inspired to take up parkruns by her work colleague Stephen Byrne after suffering a personal crisis in 2017. “It is so good for my mental health, I can’t explain the feel good factor,” she told the Killarney Advertiser. “My personal circumstances changed dramatically in January 2017 and I needed to do something for my mental health.” She has also done parkruns all over Europe; in total she has participated in 178 runs in countries like Britain, Germany, Poland and Italy.
She has also volunteered for 180 parkruns, often acting as ‘tail walker’ on the event she had entered. In March this year Majella completed her parkrun Alphabet Challenge by participating in a parkrun in 26 different cities – one for each letter - York in England and Zielona Góra in Western Poland were the two most difficult letters to tick off. “parkrun has helped me so much,” she added, “I have made friends all over world.” Later this year she will join her English friends Don and Sue Esslemont on a parkrun in Britain. “Sue is doing her 500th walk this year. I first met them in Buncrana [County Donegal] and they encouraged me to travel to more events – it is one big family.” She also paid tribute to Bertie and Bairbre Hickey from Tralee who have joined her on over 20 runs across Ireland.
Junior parkrun launched in Killarney A new parkrun for four to 14-year-olds has been launched in Killarney. The first local junior parkrun will take place in Killarney House and Gardens on Sunday at 9.30am. “Tralee has been holding junior parkruns for a while now but this is a first for Killarney,” Majella said. The adult Killarney parkrun will take place as usual tomorrow (Saturday).
The Oscar nominated actress, who also recently received an Olivier Award for her role in 'The Lost Daughter', plays a key role starring as widow Harper whose husband died tragically. Filled with emotion, fear and regret, Harper retreats alone to the English countryside seeking peace after witnessing a shocking tragedy - but the one hour 40 minute long Horror/Drama, written and directed by Alex Garland, is far from serene. Someone or something from the surrounding woods appears to be stalking her as she continuously witnesses numerous men, all played by Rory Kinnear, who appear to look alike. Soon Harper's dread becomes a fully formed nightmare, inhabited by her darkest memories and fears. In the United States and Canada, 'Men' was released alongside 'Downton Abbey: A New Era', and made $1.4 million on its
first day. It went on to debut to $3.3 million, finishing fifth at the box office. It has also received generally positive reviews from critics. Tonight (Friday) she will talk to RTÉ's Late Late Show host Ryan Tubridy with award-winning British producer and musician Bernard Butler, about their new collaborative 12-track album 'For All Our Days That Tear The Heart'.
Killarney facing rental property dilemma | By Sean Moriarty There is a chronic shortage of longterm properties to rent in the town – with just five in a 10km radius this week listed on rental website daft. ie. There are over 600 short stay properties, in the same radius, available on airbnb.ie. The Government could make a decision within the next 10 days to further restrict the short-term letting of houses and apartments in an effort to appease the national housing shortage. However, these are the very properties that visitors to Killarney want to rent – and any attempt to reduce available holiday properties in the town will be met with opposition from the town’s tourism leaders. It will also lead to more expensive holidays for tourists (both Irish and international) as they face ever increasing costs against the backdrop of less choice. "The visitors who come to rural Ireland for a few months mean a lot to the local economy in rural places such as Gneeveguilla, Scartaglin and Kilgarvan,” Danny Healy-Rae TD told the Dáil during a Let-
tings Enforcement Bill debate. “It boosts the local pub or shop. That means something. We should not deprive those people of that. The other thing is these visitors want to experience rural areas. They perhaps left cities and hotels and gave half their life living in those very bright-light urban areas and want to experience a local place. If we hurt those people who operate what they call this Airbnb system, it would be wrong.” He called on the Government to fund local county councils so they can build more affordable housing. “I feel this bill is interfering with the democratic rights of house holders to do what they chose with their own property. Rents are expensive but this is not the way to deal with it, they need to build more houses as a matter of urgency,” he added. "There are two major issues here; one is planning permission where the only place that seems to be available is Killarney where sites are costing €1 million an acre now, and the other issue is the increased cost of materials to build a house.”

Donie’s influence lives on | By Aidan Quirke Killarney’s thespians and writers lit up the stage on Wednesday night in the Gleneagle Hotel in what was a fitting tribute to a much loved local actor.
NEW RECRUITS: Killarney Tidy Towns welcomed Ukrainians to their crew on Monday night.
Ukrainians volunteer to keep Killarney tidy Volunteers from Killarney Tidy Towns welcomed nine Ukrainian refugees to their crew on Monday night. | By Sean Moriarty This week marked the third week that the volunteer crew were on the streets of Killarney, giving their time freely to make the town look its best ahead of judging in the annual Tidy Towns Competition. Killarney took a gold medal last year but it is 2011 since the town last won the overall title. Johnny Maguire of the Killarney Tidy Towns committee said he was pleased to see volunteer numbers growing. Last Monday 33 people put their hands up to clear litter or paint fences on the Hans Liebherr Road. The newcomers included nine Ukrainians and an Irish-American couple who have recently re-located to the area.
In a random act of kindness Kieran Culloty of the Reeks Centra offered free tea and treats when the crew were finished their evening’s work after he saw the team in action. “It is the whole psychological thing of doing something for your community,” Johnny told the Killarney Advertiser. “And people get to know each other and make new friends. It was while over the cup of tea at the finish that we really got to hear the back stories of the people there.” The group will meet again at 6pm on Monday night at Lidl car park. Johnny would also like to encourage residents' groups who want to set up cleaning operations in their estate. He can be contacted on 087 6982151.
An audience of over 200 came along to appreciate the first live production post-pandemic by local troupe Four Esquire Productions. It was poignant to many that this series of three short plays came just weeks after the passing of local actor, writer and director of West End House School of Arts, Donie Courtney. His influence could be seen in the young faces that graced the stage, some who are also students at the drama school - a fitting tribute to the inspirational Killarney man. The first play, 'The Letter D', was a farce based on a retired rug seller selling off his stock online. The only issue was he advertised drugs and not rugs which caught the eye of the local garda, drug dealer and party goer. It held up well

Summer camps launched by Killarney Valley Athletic Club | By Sean Moriarty

Killarney Valley Athletic Club has launched a series of summer camps at its track and field arena on New Road. The camps are aimed at children aged between five and 12-years-old and train-
with a great turn from emerging talent Killian Fleming and Ryan Jones. Brian Bowler as the local garda and Martin O’Brien kept everyone laughing. The second play about a disillusioned hospitality worker was less farce and more introspective with two young actors, Dylan Shortt and Sean Gannon holding the audience’s gaze. Many will be watching with keen interest how these two talented actors will progress as both performances were excellent. The best laughs were saved for last with ‘Bin Wars’ a darkly comic farce about two neighbours fighting over their wheelie bins. Events take a turn for the worst in violent comic fashion. The timing of the lead actors was impeccable, Danny McClure, Paul Spitere, Anne Browne, and Otis Ikogho had the audience in stitches. A standing ovation on the night left no one in doubt that Four Esquires Productions has come back in strong form. It is a great shot in the arm for the arts in Killarney with young and old talent showing great commitment.
ing will be provided by local Paralympian Jordan Lee and Canadian and now locally-based Paralympian Madison Wilson Walker. Camps cost €100 per child. “This is not a commercial camp, all profits will go back into paying down the loan we have to build the Arena," said coach Tomas Griffin.
Killarney Valley Athletic Club have a debt of around €120,000 following the construction of the facility that is available to all school going children and teenagers in the town. Each camp lasts for one week. After an initial four-week run between and July 4 and 29 a second will take place between August 8 and 19. Activities include track and field and basketball, and indoor facilities are available in bad weather. Booking is available on www.killarneyvalleyac.ie.

Community College students recognised by AIB's national life skills programme Killarney Community College is one of 16 schools in Ireland to be recognised by the AIB Future Sparks Programme which focuses on themes including sustainability, financial wellness, health and well-being, globalisation and civic literacy. | By Michelle Crean The local school was selected out of 585 schools registered with the programme and will now take part in a tree planting ceremony with their local AIB branch manager. The AIB Future Sparks Programme is a new skills-based interdisciplinary programme for secondary school students, aimed at supporting 12-18-year-olds in the development and learning of key life skills. It also supports the development of core skills including communications, critical thinking and digital innovation. Guidance counsellor in Killarney Community College, Niamh Mulligan, saw the challenges that students faced when moving from primary school into secondary school, so she set out to support their First Year students, helping them learn the skills they would need to adapt to the change. The school prioritised time and space the young students need to focus on well-being topics such as self-esteem, self-confidence, decision-making, family challenges, stress and mental health. They set up workshops and found resources, such as the AIB Future Sparks Programme First Year Transition Work-
book, which helped their students learn the necessary skills. Killarney Community College has received a plaque to commemorate its participation, as well as a native Irish tree which will be planted on the grounds of their school. These trees will contribute to the bank’s commitment to plant 90,000 native Irish trees over the next three years on behalf of new AIB second-level student account holders. Students were also awarded with individual digital certs to recognise their hard work while supporting biodiversity. “The AIB Future Sparks programme is giving our students valuable life skills," Niamh said. "When students are happy, they learn.” AIB’s Chief People Officer, Geraldine Casey, added that she'd like to "congratulate Killarney Community College on their fantastic achievement and indeed all of the students and schools who have participated in the AIB Future Sparks Programme". "At AIB, we are delighted to play our part in supporting students and teachers with educational resources under this programme to guide skills development
Ireland’s oldest woman recalls her Killarney days over 100-years-ago | By Sean Moriarty Máirín Hughes - who spent part of her early childhood in Killarney celebrated her 108th birthday on Sunday last (May 22) making her Ireland’s oldest woman. The previous record was held by 107-year-old Nancy Stewart who died on September 10 last year. Although born in Belfast, Máirín went to school in the Mercy Convent. Her father was a customs and excise officer and the family moved around a lot eventually coming to Killarney after spells in County Down and Dublin. Speaking this week via a special video link organised for the Killarney Advertis-
er, she recalled, with remarkable clarity, of her time in the locality. “I went to Mercy Convent, neighbours who had three children were given the job of taking me to school,” she said. “They were annoyed because the children were going to school for two or three years but I was put in to the same class as them – my mother had taught me.” Her mother came from the Rathmore area and her father was from Newmarket in County Cork. She also remembers her home in Killarney which featured a glass door – unusual for the time – and something that Máirín had not seen before. “Killarney was lovely," she added. “Our first house, I could stand inside the door

They also have access to 190 educational resources including case and see the lakes, it was a glass door, I had never seen a glass door. “I could see Lough Lein, it was the lower lake, there are three lakes in Killarney and I could see them and the islands through a door.” Last year she featured in the book ‘Independence Memories: A People’s Portrait of the Early Days of the Irish Nation’, sharing stories of being kept in school in Killarney during an attack on the RIC barracks down the road. In 1924 she started a degree in science and a diploma in education at University College Cork, before working in the pathology lab in University College Cork’s Department of Medicine for 16 years. Earlier this year she recalled her story on the podcast: ‘Living History - Irish Life and Lore’. During the broadcast she talked about her parents' membership of the Gaelic League in 1910; the Spanish Flu in Ireland in 1918; The Black and Tans in Killarney in 1921; the early days of the new Free State; Eucharistic Congress in Dublin in 1932, visiting the Basket Islands in 1929; and working in the UCC medical
studies, worksheets, lesson plans and exam questions with content tailored to the various age groups throughout second level. The AIB Future Sparks Programme is free for all teachers and schools to join, and they can register for the programme on AIB’s website.

Great excitement as up to one thousand attend jobs fair There was a feeling of excitement about the future as up to one thousand jobseekers turned up to Wednesday's jobs fair - to meet with potential new employers. | By Michelle Crean Held in the Great Southern Killarney from 10.30am to 2pm, the South Kerry Jobs Fair, organised by South Kerry Development Partnership CLG in conjunction with Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce, had more than 50 employers at their stands with over one thousand jobs on offer. Positions were available across all sectors with some employers having one hundred plus positions available to fill. A number of other organisations who provide support services and educational opportunities for potential employees also took part in the event to ensure that all those who attended would be able to
avail of all potential employment opportunities. The event was aimed at helping jobseekers, many with a broad range of skills and backgrounds, meet directly with employers so that both sides could get to know each other in an informal setting. Employers will now have the chance to follow-up with potentially suitable employees in the coming weeks. SKDP’s Enterprise Officer Joanne Griffin said she was delighted with the turnout of both employers and potential employees at the event. “Between ourselves and the Chamber, we put a huge effort into organising the event and it was fantastic to see it was so well received by all.”
Speaking on behalf of the Killarney Chamber, Katy Jacobi said they were delighted to see a huge range of sectors represented on the day which was a huge enticement to the jobseekers to see the variety of employment opportunities available in the region at the moment. SKDP CEO Noel Spillane said that it was great that SKDP and the Killarney Chamber could link up in this pro-active way towards supporting both employers and potential employees in the region. “We were delighted to work with the Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce in organising this event and we hope to continue this partnership, both with the Chamber itself as well as its individual members, through our range of support services to assist the development of all business sectors in South Kerry." Muckross community remembers dedicated volunteer | By Sean Moriarty Muckross Community Association unveiled a memorial plaque to the late Liam Kelly, one of its most active volunteers, at its community centre on Saturday. Liam, who passed away in October 2020, was a long-time chairman of the association. During his time at the helm of Muckross Community Association he set up the Text Alert, organised alarms for those living alone, helped bring four defibrillators to the area, was involved with the Muckross Lottery, organised a Community Employment scheme and the extension of the community centre. He also sang with a local men’s choir.
Muckross Community Association wanted to do something to remember one of its best-loved members. On Saturday Liam’s wife Helen and current chairman John Kelly unveiled the plaque in his memory following a special a Mass said by Fr Kieran O’Brien. “It was a very special day,” assistant secretary, Breeda Daly, told the Killarney Advertiser. “He did so much and did it without seeking recognition. He just got on with it. Liam came up with the ideas and we all rowed in behind him.” Liam’s daughters Gillian, Susan, Oonagh, grandchildren and extended family were on hand to support Helen at the unveiling. Members of Muckross Rowing Club also attended as Liam made the community centre available to them for club meetings.

Experience Ukrainian culture at K-FEST Festival
27.05.2022
This year a Ukrainian programme will be presented at the Killorglin K-FEST arts and music festival, which will take place from June 3 to 6. | By Natalya Krasnenkova From food to art, films to music, there'll be a special area known as 'Little Ukraine' where visitors can sample what the country has to offer. The festival will be the first to show a mural by artist Aches with the image of the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, which the organisers brought from Dublin. Ukrainian hip-hop star and songwriter Alyona Alyona, was booked to play in Killorglin and in the full knowledge that she won't be able to fulfil the gig, the organisers will still forward the fee to her. Considered the top new rap star of Ukraine, in an article titled ‘15 European pop acts who matter right now’ the New York Times likened Alyona Alyona to gifted American rapper Azealia Banks. Festival Chairman Tim Clifford said K-FEST would reach out to help Ukrainian artists by booking and paying the star but not expecting her to honour the gig. "We would encourage other festivals all over Europe who are in the business of booking artists to do likewise and support Ukrainian artists," he said. K-FEST has also engaged with the Kerry Ukrainian community for this year’s festival. Musicians and artists who were among those to flee to Ireland to avoid conflict are invited to perform and fully participate alongside local visual and performing artists and musicians. The Ukrainian community living in Kil-
ART: Work by modern artist Angela Kushchyk will be displayed at an exhibition in the 'Little Ukraine' area at this year’s K-FEST.
The Ukrainian movies will come to K-FEST audience on June 4, from 11am to 2pm and from 4pm to 7pm in The Goat, Langford Street Killorglin. larney is preparing several more activities for the festival. 'Little Ukraine' will begin on Saturday June 4 from 11am to 4pm. “When Tim Clifford and Dave Ryan offered to take part in K-FEST, we tried to impose on them as many ways as possible to represent our country. Dave and Tim couldn't resist our onslaught, so we invite you to get to know our country through this kind of art,” the Ukrainian curators said.
AMATEUR CONCERT
You will be able to listen to Ukrainian composers performed by a young flutist, live folk and modern music and singing. And most importantly, guests will see a multimedia presentation about Ukraine. Ukrainians are specially editing the video for the festival. Festival goers can not only have fun, but also learn more about the war and Ukraine. The concert starts on June 4 at 12pm at the 'Little Ukraine' area at the KDYS off Lower Bridge Street.
CINEMA
Killorglin will become a town where modern Ukrainian cinema will be
shown. It is joining the 'Cinema Aid' - Ukraine World Cinema Marathon, a charity film marathon that is taking place around the world right now. More than 13 film marathons have taken place from Canada and America to Bulgaria and Germany. Its purpose is to show modern Ukrainian cinema around the world, to tell about the war that the Ukrainian people are going through and to gather help for our army and people. The events of the film marathon have become a powerful international platform for supporting Ukraine for the public and politicians who express sincere words of support. Ukraine abroad at each event of the film marathon brings the truth about the war and the needs of Ukraine, and famous Ukrainian cinematographers call in video appeals to increase pressure on the aggressor and words of gratitude for the comprehensive support of Ukraine in difficult times. The film marathon is held with the full support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine and funds raised are transferred to help Ukraine.
PAINTING
Modern artist Angela Kushchyk began to paint her emotions in the form of graphic drawings in the Kyiv bomb shelter where she spent two weeks with her son. Painting for her became healing from the horrible events that she faced. Later, Kateryna Onul offered to publish these works. Currently, 18 posters adorn the exterior of the Ukrainian embassies in Warsaw and Hamburg. K-FEST guests will also see these works. The exhibition will open on June 4 in the 'Little Ukraine' area and will be in a gallery from June 5.
UKRAINIAN CUISINE
There will be plenty of traditional Ukrainian dishes for the Irish audience to try out. Ukrainians promise to add as many potatoes as they can to please Irish guests. The cuisine will open on June 4 at 11am at the 'Little Ukraine' area in Marsh Lane next to the KDYS. “We invite you to the Ukrainian part of K-FEST and thank very much the organisers for such a connection to share with you the most valuable that we have – culture.”

Muckross House fourth most viewed on Google Street View WINNERS: Frank Doherty (centre) won the Senior 4 race and was joined on the podium by second-placed Thomas O'Reilly (left) and Jason Travers.
Local success in national mountain biking championships
Muckross House is the fourth most-viewed Irish museum on Google Street View according to new data released by the American multi-national technology company. The digital mapping service celebrated its 15th anniversary this week. To celebrate, Google released lists of the top 10 ‘Most visited Places of Interest on Street View in Ireland’ and ‘Most visited Museums on Street View in Ireland’. Muckross House was listed in fourth place on the museum’s list. Kilmainham Gaol, Titanic Experience, Cobh and
Dublinia Viking Museum were the top three most visited. “The Irish data shows the most visited places of interest along with the most visited museums on Street View in Ireland,” said a Google spokesperson. “15 years ago, Street View began as a far-fetched idea from Google co-founder Larry Page to build a 360-degree map of the entire world. Fast forward to today. There are now over 220 billion Street View images from over 100 countries and territories - a new milestone - allowing people to fully experience what it’s like to be in these places right from their phone or computer.”
Killarney Cycling Club members showed their skills on the national stage last weekend. | By Sean Moriarty The club hosted the second round of the Irish Cross-Country Mountain Bike National Points Series at An Óige Youth Hostel in Fossa on Sunday. Over 150 riders from all over Ireland took part in the biggest mountain biking event in the area since the club last hosted the national championship in 2018. Several club members won their category in the event. Adam Murphy was the top junior, Mark McGlynn topped the Senior 2 men’s race, and Frank Doherty was the winner in the Senior 4 men’s race. “It was a spectacular performance from Mark McGlynn, combining strong legs, great technical abilities and tactical prowess to come away with the win, getting the better of 30 riders on home soil,” said club PRO Keith Lyne. “Adam Murphy continued his good form on two wheels to finish very comfortably on the top step of the podium in the junior race. A strong sprint at the start saw a gap open very quickly which continually increased as the laps went on. No one is capable of getting the better of this young man at the moment.” Lissivigeen man Doherty has a passion for two-wheeled sports. Last year he raced
motorcycles at Mondello Park. After the season ended he took up cycle racing and has many top 10 results all over Kerry and beyond. He went off road last weekend. “Frank Doherty swapped out his usual racing wheels for something a bit thicker and found himself on the top step of the podium after an hour of fast racing. Thomas O’Reilly wasn’t far behind and finished a well-deserved second,” added Keith. “We also had Noel Doherty, Eoin Mannix and Cathal Hickey racing in style, and all finishing inside the top 10 [in S4]. All of our riders showed off their technical abilities around the course and provided spectators with great entertainment.” The club PRO paid tribute to his fellow club officers who put in weeks of work to make the event happen. “We are very grateful to everyone that made Sunday possible; An Óige for the use of the facilities, all of our sponsors who continuously back our ventures and all volunteers on the day who helped with marshalling, traffic control, set up and clean up, resulting in smooth running from start to end,” he said. “Thanks to all of the riders who travelled from all corners of the country to participate in a very enjoyable day of racing in The Kingdom.”

Hotels encourage people to check out tourism careers Kerry hoteliers have welcomed the launch of the new ‘Works for Me’ campaign from Fáilte Ireland, aimed at attracting more people to jobs in the wider tourism industry. With thousands of positions available in hotels and guesthouses across Ireland, local hoteliers are encouraging people across all ages to consider a career in the industry – including parents, people returning to the workforce, retirees and those simply seeking a career change. “Now is an ideal time to consider a career in tourism given the wide range of exciting options available for people at every stage of their working lives," Bernadette Randles, Chair, Kerry branch of the IHF said. "We know there is an increasing number of people who are seeking greater flexibility in the number of hours they work, particularly those who may be returning to the workforce – and this is something hotels and guesthouses are ideally placed to accommodate. “We are encouraging those with an interest in working with people to find out more about the many opportunities and positions available. Few sectors provide such a wide range of options for people across a variety of skills levels, backgrounds and interests – offering plenty of opportunities to support professional growth while meeting and working with great people and developing skills.” The types of positions on offer are spread across a large number of different career choices including areas such as food and beverage, catering, accommodation services, reception, leisure centre and spa facility management, sales and market-

At the time around 30 locals attended regularly. Now the people behind the project want to revitalise this important community service. They have called an open meeting at Teach Iosagain in Rathmore for next Wednesday (June 1) and existing and new members are welcome to attend. Michael O’Mahony has been appointed acting chairman until a committee is put in place next week.
“It was a big help to people in the community – it was some place to go,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “We were closed down due to lockdown, but we are looking for new members now.” Part of next week’s meeting will discuss ways to expand Sliabh Luachra Men’s Shed. Up to its closure two years ago, the Men's Shed operated out of a building owned by The Social Action Group Rathmore. Lough Lein anglers enjoy annual charity day It's always a popular event, and Sunday was no different for the members of the Lough Lein Anglers Association.
OBJECTIONS: Cllr John O’Donoghue raised the issue of planning objections at a recent Council meeting.
Councillor raises concerns over false planning objections
The Killarney club, one of the longest established fishing clubs in Ireland, held their 34th annual charity open fly fishing competition known simply as ‘The Charity'. It's part of the angling tradition in the club and is always the most popular event on the fly fishing calendar in Ireland. Spearheaded by Timo O’Sullivan, to date the anglers have raised in excess of €229,000 for deserving charities in Kerry and Cork. The main sponsor of the event is Lee Strand Co-op, Tralee. This year's deserving beneficiaries are the Kerry Hospice Foundation and The Saoirse Foundation - BUMBLEance.

A Killarney councillor has raised concerns after he discovered false planning objections were being lodged to Kerry County Council. | By Sean Moriarty At a recent Ordinary Meeting of the council, Cllr John O’Donoghue asked if the “Council would detail what identification checks are made on persons submitting planning objections?” “I was recently made aware of a case where a young couple had an objection lodged against their planning application to build a house. When the required time elapsed and they found out who the objector was, they were surprised to see it was from someone from a very small townland at the other end of the county. As events unfolded, it transpired that the person named as the objector had not made the objection, and had no knowledge whatsoever of the house even being built,” Cllr O’Donoghue told the
meeting. “I find this most unsatisfactory and while I may not agree in entirety with the process, I accept that it is an absolute right of anyone in this country to object to any development they wish.” A Council official said: “Any person or body, on payment of the prescribed fee, may make a submission or observation in writing to a planning authority in relation to a planning application within the period of five weeks beginning on the date of receipt by the authority of the application.” Mr O’Donoghue felt this did not directly answer his question. “I thank the Council for their reply but note that my question regarding identification checks on individuals objecting to planning has not been mentioned, presumably because there are none,” he said.

Another great line-up of artists and musicians for this year's K-FEST Organisers of this year's K-FEST Arts Festival from June 3 to 6 can't wait for yet another great weekend celebrating emerging artists and musicians. | By Michelle Crean The June Bank Holiday weekend marks the ninth chapter of the four day festival with an all-new schedule of events, featuring a gallery trail of over 60 visual artists, 30 live bands, spoken word artists, film, crafts, buskers, dancers, workshops, street entertainment, and a multitude of family activities. All the events at K-FEST are offered at no or low cost to the public. This year organisers had a particularly tough selection process with the artists chosen to exhibit in their pop-up spaces, as they had such a high number of online submissions, and could only take on 60 from the bunch! Approximately 300 artists submit each year and 60+ are selected to display at K-FEST. At least 15% of spots are ringfenced for Kerry artists and all artists are being paid a fee in line with The Arts Council Paying The Artists Policy. Every artist selected for K-FEST is entered into the Screaming Pope Prize au-
tomatically. "This prize is chosen by our team and also by selected judge/judges who differ from year to year," Darragh Kinch of Kinch Design Studio and Marketing Manager for K-FEST, said. "It is a tribute to their talent and the prize for the winner is €1,000 with four runners up prizes of €100 each and automatic acceptance into the next year's festival to exhibit! It is an opportunity for an emerging artist to maybe try something new with their work with an open space to experiment with exhibition space. Last year it was a local artist from Tralee, James Hayes, that took the Screaming Pope Prize accolade at the festival. "James is an incredibly talented painter, and a very deserving winner of our prize last time around. We are looking forward to seeing a new series of paintings from James at this year's festival. We also have a new judge to help with the selection process for this year."

PLENTY TO EXPERIENCE
The festival opens with The Poetry of Comedy Friday night, in which audience members are invited to recite verses that will make everyone titter and laugh. Spoken word events and film take place through the weekend alongside an open mic Rambling House on the Bank Holiday Monday. Pubs across Killorglin will morph into cutting-edge music venues with some of Ireland's best up-and-coming bands and musicians hitting the stage. A few names include Lemonade Shoelace, Naked Lungs and Everything Shook. K-FEST in collaboration with BIMM Institute Dublin will welcome seven student bands to K-FEST, where they will perform and create a live video production. K-FEST’s family and street programme this year includes buskers, art demos, kids market, circus skills, science, yoga, dance, Punch and Judy and the Fairy Trail.
DANCE
Continuing to support dance this year, there will be a Contemporary Sean Nós Dance Performance with award winning artist Sibéal Davitt and Creative Dance Project Film called ‘Imprints’, choreographed and created by dance artist Carol O’Connor will be shown over the weekend in one of the screening areas. "We have visual artists across all disciplines, including painting, sculpture, print, performance, textiles, graphic design, photography, film, sound art and audio-visual. Selected artists show their work in curated, bespoke pop-up galleries throughout the town’s disused commercial and private spaces," Art Director Rochelle Lucey added. "We are aiming to experiment a little more with some performance art this year. We will have performative spaces in a couple of our galleries with a diverse
collection of performance art and dance." The arts strand will include a number of artist-led workshops, one in leather-making being held by master crafter Conor Holden and a printmaking workshop with visual artist Aoife Claffey. Limited spaces available, booking is essential, visit www. kfest.ie.
NEW MURAL
"We will also be welcoming a new permanent fixture to the streets of the town of Killorglin with the arrival of a beautiful new mural by ‘Ominous Omin’ in the days leading up to the June Bank Holiday this year. The mural will be a tribute to Máirín Cregan, a historical figure with strong roots in Killorglin, and will be a testament to her life and work. She was an Irish nationalist who was involved in the 1916 Easter Rising and Irish War of Independence. She later made her name writing for children, as well as writing plays and novels for adults." Another mural, created in support of President Volodymr Zelensky and the people of Ukraine, will be installed for the duration of the festival. Created by Aches, a Dublin based street artist, it will be temporarily installed in one of the gallery spaces. Since 2013, K-FEST has housed over 800 visual artists and approximately 4,000 original works of art along with a number of murals on the trail throughout the town of Killorglin. With an attendance of more than 10,000 people over the June Bank Holiday weekend, K-FEST affords new and emerging artists from Ireland and beyond the ability to showcase their work to a diverse audience, providing opportunities for patronage, partnerships, and community building with fellow artists and local residents. WEDDING
Child of Prague was out for Sheree and Jamie's big day! The tradition of putting the Child of Prague out the night before their wedding worked wonders as the sun shone brightly for bride Sheree Murphy and her groom Jamie Linehan.
27.05.2022
Sheree, a secondary school teacher from Coolcorcoran, Killarney is daughter of Sheila and Denis Murphy. Jamie Linehan, son of Joan and Jimmy Linehan, works as a Garda and is originally from Carraig Na Bhfear Co Cork. The couple married on April 9 just seven months after Jamie got down on one knee at Lord Brandon’s Cottage. The wedding ceremony was in St Mary's Cathedral with Fr Kieran O'Brien, attended by close family members. "The Child of Prague worked its magic as it was the most glorious day!" Sheree told the Killarney Advertiser. "We had just our two immediate families at the church and for the meal we headed for the penthouse at the Aghadoe Heights Hotel. All our close friends joined us at 6pm to party the night away in the Garden Room of the hotel. Even though we could have had any number of guests at the wedding as all restrictions were lifted, we choose to keep it intimate which we are delighted we did." Maid of Honour was Sheree's sister Varina Murphy and two of her friends, Siob-
han McAllister and Louise Moynihan, were Bridesmaids. Jamie’s Best Man was Ricky Galvin along with his brother-in-law Michael Roche and friend Donnacha Ryan as Groomsmen. "My hair was done by Pat O’Neill with Sharon O’Sullivan from Glenbeigh being the make-up artist. I went to secondary school with Sharon and have performed on stage with Pat with the Killarney Musical Society so it was lovely to have them both there the morning of the wedding. They really added to the fun." Photographer was Pawel Nowak of Cloud9Bliss Photography. Videographer was Jackie and Lucas of LM Wedding Videography. "We went on a mini moon over to Alicante where it rained for the five days but we have a month of travelling to look forward to for the proper honeymoon during the summer, so hopefully the sun will shine then." The couple will reside in Coolcorcoran, Killarney.

The effects of ageing on our bodies Over the next couple of weeks we’re going to look at the effects of ageing on our bodies and what we can do to negate some of the impacts of father time. The reasons for this are many; No matter what age you are reading this article, you are, right now, at this very moment, getting older. Therefore ensuring our current lifestyle enables a long and fulfilled life right throughout our lives into our senior years is important. Ireland has one of the oldest populations in Europe. Activate runs an extremely successful older adult strength programme. Due to its efficacy and widespread acclaim amongst the medical community, this has become the subject of a piece of research taking place this summer at Activate. This week we will look at arthritis and the current interventions that you can take to lessen the impact this can have on you as you age. Arthritis isn’t a scary thing; it’s a normal part of ageing that happens to all of us like wrinkles. The simple definition of arthritis is inflammation and stiffness of joints. However, there are many different forms with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid the most common types in Ireland. Osteoarthritis initially affects the smooth cartilage lining of the joint which makes movement more difficult than usual, leading to pain and stiffness. Once the cartilage lining starts to roughen and thin out, the tendons and ligaments have to work harder. This can cause swelling and the formation of bony spurs called osteophytes. Severe loss of cartilage can lead to bone rubbing on bone, altering the shape of the joint and forcing the bones out of their normal position. In rheumatoid arthritis, the body's immune system targets affected joints, which leads to pain and swelling. The outer covering (synovium) of the joint is the first place affected. This can then spread across the joint, leading to further swelling and a change in the joint's shape. This may cause the bone and cartilage to break down. The good news is; inflammation can be reduced,
so too can joint stiffness. Not always, but oftentimes there are some lifestyle modifications that can help. Yes, this can and typically does get worse with age but it also gets worse with inactivity. And no, this is not a death sentence.
REDUCE SYMPTOMS
Here are some healthy lifestyle modifications that can help reduce the symptoms of arthritis, inflammation, and joint pain: 1. Applying the basics of a healthy diet that is high in protein, fruits, and vegetables, and lower in processed foods and sugar. 2. Get seven to eight hours of quality sleep each night. I’m more of a six to seven hour guy myself, but the main thing isn’t the time spent in bed it’s the quality of your sleep. Your body recovers from the rigors of life when you sleep, so more high-quality sleep will typically help with recovery and inflammation. 3. Limit alcohol intake. This one is tricky because there may be some research on a glass of red wine having some heart health and anti-inflammatory properties but alcohol undoubtedly affects your sleep and most importantly your body’s ability to get deep sleep. I admittedly need to look into the latest research on the benefits of red wine so if you enjoy a glass, don’t stop drinking it just yet, but you definitely don’t need a bottle a night! 4. Work on strength and range of motion around the joints and lifestyle factors. At Activate we run a specific programme for adults who want to focus on these factors specifically. We use progressive and intelligent means of training to load the muscles and bones to build new muscle so that we are stronger and more resilient to the stresses of life, and to build bone so that we can withstand things like trips and falls all the while improving all our major health markers such as reduced body fat levels and improved cardiovascular strength. If you’d like to talk to see if I can help with your specific situation please set up a consultation via www.activate.ie/free-intro/ or call 087 4030894.

One-Parent Family Payment Q: What is the One-Parent Family Payment? A: The One-Parent Family Payment (OFP) is a payment for men and women under 66 who are bringing children up without the support of a partner. To get OFP your children must be under a certain age. You can work and get OFP. However, to get OFP your income must be below a certain amount. Q: How does one qualify for the One-Parent Family Payment? A: To qualify for the One-Parent Family Payment (OFP) you must: • Be aged under 66 • Be the parent, step-parent, adoptive parent or legal guardian of a child under a certain age. • Be the main carer of at least one child under the age limit. The child must live with you. OFP is not paid if the parents have joint equal custody of a child or children. • Pass a means test – this looks at any income that you have • Live in Ireland and meet the habitual residence condition • Not be living with a spouse, civil partner or cohabiting Q: What is the age limit for a child? A: The first €165 of your gross weekly earnings (wages and profit from self-employment) is not taken into account in the means test. Half the remainder of your gross earnings per week is assessed as means and you may get a reduced rate of OFP. Social insurance contributions, superannuation/PRSA contributions and trade union subscriptions are not taken into account when calculating your gross earnings. You can contact your local Citizens Information Centre or Social Welfare office for advice on how your income from work would impact the level of OFP you can receive. Q: How will the maintenance I receive be treated in the means test for OFP? A: Maintenance payments for you and maintenance to you for any of your children is assessed in the means test. If you are getting maintenance from more than one person, all the payments are added together and the total is assessed. However, only half of your income from maintenance will be deducted from your OFP. If you have housing costs, your rent or mortgage repayment up to a maximum of €95.23 per week can be offset against maintenance payments. Half the balance is then assessed as means. A South Kerry welcome for people from Ukraine Staff and students at a South Kerry school welcomed a visit from the Ukrainian Ambassador to Ireland, Her Excellency Larysa Gerasko, on Monday. The Ambassador’s visit to Coláiste Na Sceilge in Cahersiveen followed an invitation sent by Kerry Education and Training Board (KETB) earlier in the month. The Ambassador was accompanied on her visit by Minister for Education and Kerry TD, Norma Foley. The organisation invited the Ambassador to South Kerry, particularly due to the significant number of Ukrainians welcomed by the local community in recent weeks. According to Department of Education figures, over 550 Ukrainian students have been enrolled in Kerry-based schools, with Kerry being one of the most popular county destinations after Dublin. Kerry ETB School, Coláiste Na Sceilge, has welcomed 34 students. “I am extremely proud of how our school communities in Kerry have so warmly welcomed students from Ukraine," Minister Foley said. "There has always been a tradition in our schools of welcoming children and

young people from any part of the world, and we stand now in solidarity with the people of Ukraine in this terrible time for their country. “I would like to thank all the members of our school communities for making the students and their families so welcome. I would also like to thank Kerry ETB for its work in the Regional Education And Language Teams (REALT) that we have now established across all 16 ETBs. They play a vital role in ensuring
access for students to education.” Speaking at the event, School Principal Maurice Fitzgerald said: “As a Kerry ETB school, our ethos is informed by the core values of respect, care, equality, community and excellence. True to our ethos and values, we welcome the Ukrainian community to Coláiste Na Sceilge, and it is our hope and expectation that they will grow and flourish during their time with us.”
Rose Festival strikes deal with MTU for live tv shows
was the importance of being inclusive of the festival contestants themselves, and all those for whom the festival is so special." CEO of the Rose of Tralee, Anthony O’Gara, welcomed the venue announcement. “We are delighted that the Rose of Tralee International Festival will be broadcast live from Kerry Sports Academy this year, particularly as the festival was cancelled for the last two years due to the pandemic," he said. "This year we are looking forward to welcoming our roses back to Tralee and celebrating together with a five-day festival beginning on Friday August 19 and culminating in the selection of the 2022 International Rose of Tralee live on Tuesday August 23.”
A deal to televise the Rose of Tralee live on RTÉ this August has been agreed between festival organisers and Munster Technological University. A venue hire agreement has been signed for one year for the use of the Kerry Sports Academy for a number of events at the North Campus in Tralee from Friday August 19 to Tuesday 23, including the live televised shows to be broadcast on RTE on the Monday and Tuesday evenings, August 22 and 23. Announcing the one-year venue hire
agreement in Kerry, MTU President Prof. Maggie Cusack commented: “The Kerry Sports Academy is a stateof-the-art facility and an asset to Tralee and the surrounding region. This is an opportunity to showcase our fantastic venue for a major event that is of such significance to Tralee. MTU has a statutory function to develop and promote strong social and cultural links with the communities in which it is located, and in doing so to respect the diversity of values, beliefs and traditions in Irish society. This was taken into consideration by MTU in agreeing to the venue hire, as
A woman was left red faced in South Wales after she needed to be rescued - while she was coming to the aid of a sheep. Specially trained officers arrived and had to abseil about 50 feet (15 metres) down a quarry to reach the sheep. They also helped bring the woman to safety after she realised mid-rescue that she was actually afraid of heights. The ewe was stranded on a narrow ledge in a quarry in Ilston, near Swansea when the woman and her partner decided to help. However, it all went very wrong and it was the RSPCA - who were alerted to the stranded sheep - found her stuck on the rockface. They coaxed the sheep to move on and then brought the woman to safety. “The RSPCA is urging well-meaning members of the public to avoid putting themselves in danger by rescuing animals after a woman got into difficulty while attempting to reach a sheep," a spokesperson for the animal charity said. “The woman and her partner had gone to a disused limestone quarry at Ilston on the Gower Peninsula after seeing a Facebook post about the ewe, which had become stranded there on a narrow ledge. She’d climbed about 12 feet (3.6 metres) up the pit to try and reach the animal but then panicked when she realised how high she was, and attempts by her partner to persuade her down were unsuccessful. It must have been an unpleasant experience for her, as well as the ewe, but I’m glad we were able to get both of them down safely.”

Historic moment as Senator Daly meets Ukraine president The Ceann Comhairle, Mr Seán Ó Fearghaíl TD and Cathaoirleach of Seanad Éireann Mr Mark Daly visited Ukraine on Friday last.
Kerry receives the most blue flag awards The high standard of the coastal environment in Kerry has been acknowledged with the awarding of 15 Blue Flags for Kerry beaches and coastal amenities for 2022 - the highest number in the country. Kerry has retained its current 14 Blue Flags, including 12 at beaches and one each at the Portmagee Seasonal Pontoon (operated by Kilrush Maritime Ltd) and Fenit Marina as well as regaining the Blue Flag at Ballybunion North, bringing the total to 15. The decision of the International Blue Flag jury was announced on Friday and sees the following beaches and marinas awarded Blue Flags for 2022: Rossbeigh, Ballybunion South, Ballybunion North, Ballyheigue, Fenit, Maherbeg, Kells, Doire Fhíonáin (Derrynane), White Strand, Baile an Sceilg (Ballinskelligs), Banna, Fionntrá (Ventry), Inch, Fenit Marina and Portmagee Seasonal Pontoon. Five Green Coast Awards have been presented for Waterville, Ballinskelligs, Béal Bán, Castlegregory and Littor beaches. Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council,
Cllr Jimmy Moloney warmly welcomed the announcement as a very significant acknowledgement of the quality of beach environments in Kerry. "Blue Flags are a very important internationally recognised indicator of the quality of a beach environment, and it is encouraging that Kerry is emerging as the national leader in this regard." Cllr Moloney added that the awarding of the Blue Flags is a result of a collaborative approach between Kerry County Council, local community groups and beach users who work together to maintain the county's beautiful beaches and bathing waters. "The Local Authority invests tremendous effort and resources in keeping County Kerry at the top of the Blue Flag list and will continue to ensure the sustainable management of the magnificent beaches along the Kerry coast," Director of Services, John Breen, added. "We would appeal to all beach users this summer to continue to be responsible by acting responsibly and leaving nothing behind on the beach except their footprints."
This historic visit came after the President of Ukraine Mr Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed the Houses of the Oireachtas last month and was a direct invitation from the Speaker of the Rada, Mr Ruslan Stefanchuk. The group had separate meetings with Mr Zelenskyy, the Prime Minister Mr Denys Shmyhal and also the Head of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Mr Ruslan Stefanchuk. The group then had an opportunity to witness first-hand the consequences of the occupation of the towns of Bucha and Irpin by Russian armed forces when they were brought to the Church of the Holy Apostle Andrew the First-Called and All Saints – the place of mass graves of civilians killed by the Russian occupiers in Bucha and then viewed the destruction caused by shelling and air strikes of the residential area in Irpin.

American school shooting was 900th in decade There have been 900 gun incidents in American schools in the last 10 years - that’s according to US President Joe Biden, who was speaking after the latest massacre in Texas this week. On Tuesday a gunman entered the Robb Elementary school in Uvalde, Texas and opened fire. He killed at least 19 children and two teachers before being shot dead himself by responding police officers. This was the 27th school shooting in America this year. Tuesday’s horrific
events were the worst since Sandy Hook in December 2012. “It’s been 340 - 3,448 days - 10 years since I stood up at a high school in Connecticut - a grade school in Connecticut, where another gunman massacred 26 people, including 20 first graders, at Sandy Hook Elementary School,” said Biden. “Since then, there have been over 900 incidents of gunfires reported on school grounds. I had hoped, when I became President, I would not have to do this again.
“On behalf of the Irish people I wish to thank you for conducting a defence of our shared international values," the Ceann Comhairle said. "We in Ireland have welcomed many Ukrainian families, women and children seeking refuge from this barbaric war. Many have fled Ukraine having witnessed horrors that we can hardly comprehend. I assure you today that those Ukrainians coming to our shores will be cared for with kindness, deep respect and dignity.” The Cathaoirleach added that he wished to "truly thank the leaders and people of Ukraine to allow this group the opportunity to fully gain an invaluable insight into this war". "The damage and impact on this beautiful country both infrastructurally and psychologically will take a long time to heal. The Irish people stand with Ukraine and as Cathaoirleach of Seanad Éireann I extend the hand of friendship and solidarity by inviting the Head of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, Mr Ruslan Stefanchuk to speak in the Seanad at a date in the future."
“Another massacre. Uvalde, Texas. An elementary school. Beautiful, innocent second, third, fourth graders. And how many scores of little children who witnessed what happened see their friends die as if they’re on a battlefield, for God’s sake. They’ll live with it the rest of their lives.” The attack began about 11.30am after the gunman shot his grandmother. He then crashed his car outside the school and ran into the building, according to a spokesman for the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Gardening - By Debby Looney

Why have some flowers been forgotten? It seems that every day new plants are created with a variety of colours and shapes of leaves/flowers… all with patents and rights attached so growers/ inventors can make money, and consumers continue to buy. And designers also have the opportunity to make beautiful new labels to entice us. So many of these have short life spans, and cannot withstand our weather. They are hyped up, the market is flooded, the trend is set, and the customer buys. We are all victim to it, myself included. However, what of the old plants, the reliable ones our grandparents grew? In the vegetable world they would be known as heirloom varieties. In the fashion industry it is called vintage. In the gardening world they are called boring! In recent years, as I see one thing after another failing, I am beginning to appreciate the boring plants! Take Potentillas for example, they come in red, orange, cream, yellow, flower all summer from April onwards, need no pruning or dead-heading, and are generally disease free and hardy. Why have they been forgotten? ‘Yellow Queen’, ‘Primrose Beauty’, ‘Abbotswood white’ and ‘Red Ace’ are excellent varieties. Spirea is another plant which is not as popular as it should be. ‘Snowmound’ has delicate bright green leaves on arching branches. In early spring it is covered in pure white flowers. ‘Goldmound’ has bright red new foliage which turns a lovely shade of gold, and flowers pink throughout the summer. ‘Golden Princess’ and ‘Little Princess’ are dwarf varieties.
Astilbe, also commonly called Spirea, is a perennial with spikes of red, pink, cream or white flowers. They are great fillers, and will grow in any soil. Slug and rabbit resistant - a must have. Shasta daisies are also reliable, however, go for the original single flowered one. All the funky, spiky, double types need care and attention and well-drained soil! Cistus, or rockrose, is another old-fashioned plant which has fallen out of favour. I am not sure why, as it is compact, free-flowering, evergreen and easy to grow! There are many varieties to choose from, but mainly pink and white. It is advisable to cut it back by half after flowering, to prevent it going woody and too big. It is not just in the world of shrubs and perennials that old favourites are pushed aside. Are you growing Alyssum? The white and blue borders, as they are known, are forgotten about! Also marigolds, and especially Tagetes, are not that popular but they keep midges away, and their scent is delicious. Pretty yellow flowers, they withstand wind, rain and heat. Ageratum always reminds me of my grandmother, and as such I always have it - but it is so hard to get it is almost rare! Salvia is another bedding plant which has been left by the wayside, but show me another red as vibrant! So, even though new plants are exciting, it is worthwhile building a garden around tried and tested reliables. It is after 15 years of spending money, digging out and transplanting, disappointment and questioning myself as a gardener, that I come to you with this advice!

Help Kerry Hospice raise vital funding this June
| By Michelle Crean Kerry Hospice Foundation volunteers will be selling sunflower merchandise around the county next month to raise vital funds for the hospice and home care services. This year's Hospice Sunflower Day will take place on June 10 and 11 and organisers are delighted to be back following a forced break due to the pandemic. "Our last Sunflower Day on the streets was in 2019 and we are so excited this year that we can go back to normality and meet the wonderful people of Kerry who have supported the services over the last 30 years," Andrea O'Donoghue PRO with the Kerry Hospice Foundation told the Killarney Advertiser.
Hospice Sunflower Days are celebrating 32 years and it's one of Ireland's biggest charity fundraisers. "Kerry Hospice needs to raise €600,000 a year to support the Specialist Palliative Care Services and the Home Care Services and in the near future fund two nurse prescribers which will benefit the whole county. We also have a Swift Donate Page and the link is www.idonate.ie/ swift/Kerry SFD," she added. "Kerry Hospice Foundation would like to take this opportunity to thank everybody for their support over the last number of years and especially over the last two years when COVID restrictions did not allow street collections. A big thank you also to David Moran of the Kerry team who officially launched our Sunflower Day for us."
Endangered birds the focus of information evening | By Michelle Crean It was an evening with a difference yesterday (Thursday) as Killarney Men's Shed hosted an educational event making bird boxes. Storyteller Sean O Laoghaire, members of Killarney Men’s Shed, Eleanor Turner, Biosphere Officer for the Kerry UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and Luke Myers, Project Biodiversity Officer for the Kerry Eco-Social Farming EIP Project were all in attendance. The Kerry Eco-Social Farming Project is working with farms throughout Kerry to support and improve nature on the farm. Part of this work is to create and place bird boxes for several important bird species to encourage them to make their homes on farms in Kerry. Killarney Men's Shed has been working with local communities to build and distribute bird and insect boxes to help protect the birds and pollinators. The main aim of the event was education
about birds, and how the everyday person can help within the Kerry Biosphere – whether that be through habitat management or nest box installation as numbers have been dropping in recent years. "This year the Kerry Biosphere, with support from Creative Ireland and Kerry County Council Arts Office, is celebrating the 'Birds of the Kerry Biosphere' through a series of events and activities planned to encourage local communities to learn more about the birds that can be found in their gardens, and on their farms and what can be done to help them!" Eleanor Turner, from Kerry Biosphere, said. Visit www.kerrybiosphere.ie to find out more about the project.

Restored Toyota unveiled ahead of charity raffle The classic Toyota Starlet that Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club (KVCVC) spent the last six months restoring was unveiled to the public last night (Thursday). The club has rebuilt a 1982 Toyota Starlet that was originally bought in Bowler’s Garage and it will be raffled to raise funds for local charities. Proceeds from the €10 ticket sales will be going to charities Cuan Mhuire, the Killarney branch of the Irish Kidney Association, Killarney Valley AC and cancer support charity, Recovery Haven Kerry. The car was only finished this week with Fifth Year students at Killarney Community College completing an exhaust sys-
tem refurbishment as part of their engineering studies. The final bodywork was done by Humphrey Kerins Crash Repairs just in time for last night’s launch at Kelliher’s Toyota Garage in Tralee. Radio Kerry DJ Brendan Fuller and Paralympian Jordan Lee unveiled the 40-year-old car at last night’s launch. “Thursday night was all about the people who volunteered their time and the people who put their hand in their pockets to make this happen, it was a celebration for them," KVCVC PRO, Tom Leslie, told the Killarney Advertiser. “From Friday morning, it is all about the charities and selling tickets.”

Nagle’s helmet set to make €15k in auction A crash helmet worn by Paul Nagle during the 2021 World Rally Championship - and signed by some of the sport’s biggest names - is set to make at least €15,000 at a charity auction this weekend. Both Fossa GAA Club and Recovery Haven in Tralee will benefit from the funds from the side event at the much-anticipated Déjà Vu Tralee charity road run tomorrow (Saturday). Over 160 cars from the 1950s up the present day will take part in the 180km run along the Dingle Peninsula after a ceremonial start in Tralee town centre at 9am. The event – part of Kerry Motor Club’s 50th anniversary – is tracing the history of motorsport in the county. As well as the road event, a gala dinner will take place in The Rose Hotel later that evening. Several items of interest to motorsport fans are up for grabs in an auction – including the helmet - that will run alongside the gala dinner. Nagle has just returned from Rally de Portugal where he was competing for the M-Sport World Rally Team alongside

Signatories include multiple world champions like Sebastien Loeb, Sebastien Ogier and Carlos Sainz. Irish world championship heroes Kris Meeke and Breen
have also put their name to the helmet. In total, over 20 current or former world championship drivers have signed the helmet. “I already have a very good offer on the helmet of €15,000 which will go to Recovery Haven Kerry,” he said. “Anything more I would like to give to Fossa GAA Club. They are building dressing rooms for their female footballers and my two kids have just started to play with the club. I would like to give back something to the community. I have been very privileged to do what I do, and this
is something for two local organisations that deserve support." Bidding on the helmet will take place during the gala dinner but phone bids and silent bids are also welcome. Fossa GAA Club is organising a fundraiser for club activities and has put together ‘A Night With Legends’ at the INEC on July 5. Some of the greatest legends ever to grace a Gaelic football pitch will share a stage and Nagle’s helmet auction will be one of the first contributions to this.

In loving memory of Hannah O’Donoghue late of Ballybrack Firies who died on 28th May 2003.
In loving memory of Donie Doolan late of 11 Woodlawn Park Killarney whose 7th anniversary occurs the 29th May.

O’SULLIVAN
In loving memory of Con O’Sullivan late of Clohane, Headford, Kilarney who passed away on May 30th 2021. As we remember Cono on his first anniversary, his wife Maura, sons Kieran and Adrian, daughters Norma, Olive and Corinna, daughters-in-law Mary and Anne, sons-in-law Pat, Mike and Paul, grandchildren and extended family would like to thank everyone who supported us in our loss. While covid restrictions at the time did not allow people to pay their respects personally, we are grateful for all the calls, texts, mass cards, letters and on line messages sharing lovely thoughts and fond memories of our dear Father. To everyone who brought food and refreshments, we greatly appreciated it. Heartfelt thanks to all our neighbours and friends who gathered on the roadside to pay their respect to Cono on his final journey to Glenflesk church and Killaha graveyard and those who tuned in to his funeral mass via live streaming. A sincere thank you to Fr. George Hayes for the celebration of the funeral mass and to Paud O’Donoghue and Mary O’Callaghan for their special contribution in music and song. To Tom Murphy Barradubh and staff for their kind help and guidance in arranging Cono’s funeral and the grave diggers for preparing his final resting place. We are grateful to the Drs and nurses of Deenagh Medical Practice and the staff of Careplus Pharmacy , Park road, for their kindness and attention. As it is impossible to thank everyone individually, please accept this acknowledgement as an expression of our family gratitude. The holy sacrifice of the mass has been offered for your intentions. And when great souls die after a period peace blooms slowly and always irregularly. Spaces fill with a kind of soothing electric vibration. Our senses, restored, never to be the same, whisper to us. They existed. They existed. We can be. Be and be better. For they existed. Anniversary Mass will be on Saturday 18th June at 6pm in Glenflesk Parish Church.

EYES ON THE PRIZE Men on the hunt for 83rd Munster title | In-form ladies ready for tough Cork test
FOCUS: Kerry manager Jack O'Connor will need his players to be fully tuned in when they welcome Limerick to Killarney on Saturday. Photo: Stephen McCarthy/Sportsfile.
| By Adam Moynihan Kerry’s avid football fans will be dreaming of the double in Killarney’s Fitzgerald Stadium on Saturday afternoon, although one half of that dream could be a lot more straightforward than the other. While the men are overwhelming favourites to dismantle an unfancied Limerick side in their Munster final at 3pm, the ladies face a huge battle with age-old rivals Cork in their decider at 12.15pm. Almost everything about these Munster finals is unorthodox: early throwins, on a Saturday, in May – and no sign of Cork in the headline show – but the weather forecast is positive and it should be a nice day out in Killarney. Sure isn’t that what Munster finals are all about?
ALL-IRELAND TRAIL
Jack O’Connor’s men are well and truly on the All-Ireland trail following their solid win over Cork in the semi-final. Victory over Limerick on Saturday is the next step and, in truth, it’s virtually impossible to see them faltering in any meaningful way against their neighbours to the north. The Treaty are contesting their first Munster final since 2010 and it is 18 years since they famously pushed Kerry to a replay in 2004. The footballers from the hurling and rugby stronghold have one Munster title to their name, and you have to go back to the century before last to find it. That being said, they have undoubtedly made strides under current manager Billy Lee and next season they will be operating in Division 2 alongside the likes of Dublin, Kildare and Cork. They also impressed against Tipperary in their Munster semi-final, prevailing with two goals to spare. Those three-pointers came from the boots of burly full forward Josh Ryan – a big unit of a man who will contest the throw-ins – and centre forward
Brian Donovan. The Bourkes from Adare – Robbie and Hugh – are also capable in front of the posts, and at midfield Cillian Fahy from Drom-Broadford, who scored three points from play in his last outing, will also take minding. The fact that the home team are 1/100 for this match perhaps tells its own story but you can be sure that this crop of Kerry footballers will be approaching this match armed with a laser focus. The bad news is that injured Spa pair Dara Moynihan and Dan O’Donoghue will not be available for selection, though it is hoped that they will be available for the side’s next fixture (which realistically should be an All-Ireland quarter-final on June 25/26).
MAKING STRIDES
The Kerry ladies have been making the news for non-footballing reasons during the run up to their showdown with Cork. Last week star player Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh expressed her annoyance at the fact that she and her teammates have not been allowed to train at Kerry GAA’s Centre of Excellence in Currans (see opposite for more on this story). Despite the furore surrounding Ní Mhuircheartaigh’s comments, you can be certain that joint managers Darragh Long and Declan Quill will have their players’ minds fully concentrated on one thing and one thing only: toppling Cork on Saturday. Considering the recent history between the two teams, the task facing The Kingdom appears to be a difficult one. Kerry have been excellent so far this season, however, so who knows? With what will hopefully be a large and vociferous home support behind them, they might have what it takes to turn the tide.

‘What Louise said was bang on’ Kayleigh Cronin says Kerry ladies ‘100% agree’ with Ní Mhuircheartaigh’s Centre of Excellence comments The Kerry ladies are “100%” behind Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh following her comments surrounding the team’s limited access Kerry GAA’s Centre of Excellence in Currans. Ní Mhuircheartaigh caused a stir late last week when she revealed that she and her teammates have not been allowed to train at the state-of-the-art facility, which is owned and operated by the men’s county board. Kerry’s star forward described the lack of access as “annoying”, especially considering the fact that a large photograph of her adorns the entrance to the facility. Speaking exclusively to this journalist on The Kerry Football Podcast, Ní Mhuircheartaigh’s teammate Kayleigh Cronin confirmed that the whole team are on the same page on this issue. “I think what Louise said was bang on and we all 100% agree with it,” Cronin said. “She was put in a bit of a tough position being asked about it, but what she got off her chest is 100% what the team feels. And I can say with certainty that I can speak on behalf of not only all the girls in the dressing room but the backroom team and management as well in saying that what Louise has said is all of our opinions. “What’s said is said now. We’ll leave it out there for everyone else to be thinking about and to be talking about. Hopefully the county boards can sort it out between themselves. As far as we’re concerned, that’s us
done with it.” In the wake of Ní Mhuircheartaigh’s comments, Kerry GAA released a statement via Balls.ie: “Kerry GAA have been in discussions with the Kerry LGFA in relation to their use of the Centre of Excellence facilities in Currans and the future development of one of the two undeveloped pitches in the complex for specific use by the Kerry LGFA and Kerry Camogie "The Kerry LGFA have been accommodated with training facilities at the Centre of Excellence over the past number of years and this will continue to be the case. "We look forward to working in close collaboration with Kerry LGFA to bring our collective future development plans to fruition.” Dr Crokes star Cronin says she and her teammates are “absolutely” keen to see that happen. “We had the pleasure of being in there prior to COVID. It’s an unbelievable facility. It’s obviously very central as well. So hopefully, fingers crossed, the county boards can work together and get the pitch in good nick, so that not only we can use it but the underage teams as well. “It would be great to have a base to go from in the future.” Cronin added that team are now focussing on Saturday’s Munster final against Cork, which takes place before the men’s final at 12.15pm in the Fitzgerald Stadium.

Where would you rather be, ponders former Kerry goalkeeper Eamonn Fitzgerald It’s that old familiar feeling on one of the most eagerly awaited occasions for Kerry football supporters. Munster football final day in the Fitzgerald Stadium, and all that entails, is less than 24 hours away. Travelling supporters love coming to Killarney, a special pilgrimage. First stop off is at Jimmy O’Brien’s, even if the late boss is no longer there. He will be viewing the proceedings of the day from a more lofty, heavenly throne. The game itself will be played in a sporting manner and afterwards there is that wonderful sight of the green and gold - traditionally mixed with the blood and bandages, although this time more
green will be visible than usual - streaming down Lewis Road. No hassle, no bother with opposing supporters, and no segregation. You wouldn’t get that after the big soccer games in Glasgow, or elsewhere. If you are in no rush you’ll be walking beside David Clifford and co. Kerry players will tell you that after beating Cork in The Park there is no better feeling than to walk tall with Kerry supporters down to town. Limerick provide the opposition this time but the feeling will be sweet nevertheless. Ask Tomás O’Sé about it, and forget about Colm O’Rourke and Seán Cavanagh; the real meaningful analysis will take place in
O’Brien’s. The new management there will facilitate that tradition and, if you are in no hurry, Rosie will be along with comments that he could not make live on Radio Kerry. “You’d have to say...” That’s the scene nearly every second year since The Park was opened in 1936 to commemorate Dick Fitzgerald, one of the all time greats of Gaelic football, who wrote the first ever GAA training manual: ‘How to Play Gaelic Football’. It was amazing how he got that book published in 1914, when all hell broke loose on July 28 of that year. The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungar-
ian throne, and his wife Archduchess Sophie during a state visit to Sarajevo occurred that day. World War I broke out, heralding four years of dreadful carnage. Many of those who left the lanes of Killarney as mercenaries of war never came back from the trenches.
THE SHORT WAR Munster finals are often seen as wars that lasts for a little over an hour. In a few hours Limerick will face up Kerry more in the Munster football final. Is that a typo? Tomorrow is only Saturday. Has the Munster Council gone mad, or what? We gave them enough stick over the

The ladies deserve their day in the sun, on the best surface available and hopefully watched by a much bigger attendance than usual I was delighted to see such a strong presence of local girls on the winning team led by Jamie Lee O’Connor (captain) from Ballymacelligott: Clodagh Clancy and Anne O’Shaughnessy (Fossa); Síofra Randles (Dr Crokes); Keeva Riordan and Avril Rooney (Beaufort); Bríd Curtin (Currow); and Leah and Caitlin Griffin (Scartaglen).

protracted ‘Páirc Uí Rinn or Nowhere’ saga, and they deserved it for sitting on their hands for so long. But fair is fair, they deserve due credit for providing a very attractive double bill tomorrow. I am delighted to see the Kerry v Cork LGFA Munster final going ahead of the senior men’s Kerry v Limerick match. The ladies deserve their day in the sun, on the best surface available and hopefully watched by a much bigger attendance than usual. Ladies football has come on leaps and bounds since the glory days of Mary Jo Curran. She was a 10-time All-Ireland winner with Kerry between 1982 and 1993; she also picked up 11 All-Stars. How about that for a record, Pat Spillane et al? Despite great work by so many people, ladies football was and still is the Cinderella sport in Kerry. The men get prime support. Unfortunately, it annoys me to see how the Kerry men’s teams are so well looked after - and rightly so - but still the ladies senior team has to go with the begging bowl. Not for them the certainty of being allowed train in the Centre of Excellence
at Currans. Too often they have to depend on the generosity of clubs. Anyone involved in underage academy games will inform you that the numbers of young girls taking up football and hurling is growing dramatically - at some clubs they outnumber the boys. Mná na h-Éireann chun tosaigh go mórmhór Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh. Peileadóir den scoth. The GAA still hasn’t brought the LGFA under its umbrella. Why?
MNÁ NA RÍOCHTA FÉ 14
Kudos to the Kerry girls who won the All-Ireland U14 A final, defeating Cork in a thrilling match at Páirc Uí Rinn. After a hectic struggle the teams were all square, but in extra time the Kerry girls nudged ahead in a thrilling finish (5-12 to 5-10). Maith sibh go léir, cailíní óga na Ríochta, and to all the management team. Savour the experience and here’s to great days and lasting friendships to follow in the green and gold geansaís. Comhghairdeas to all involved, especially manager Ger O’Sullivan (Firies), that smiling engineering teacher at Killarney Community College.
I expect Cork to win tomorrow’s Munster ladies final, despite the fact that Kerry and Cork lead the way with 11 All-Ireland titles apiece. Kerry have not won the Brendan Martin Cup since 1993, whereas Cork have been dominant since 2005. They lost only one All-Ireland (2010) in the period 2005 to 2016. That is some record and great recognition for Éamonn Ryan, in particular. Dublin are the modern leaders, but who will ever forget the great breakthrough for Meath in last year’s final, dumping the Dubs to win their first title. In many ways it was a better spectacle than the men’s final. Joint team manager of the Kerry ladies in tomorrow’s Munster final is Declan Quill, the former classy forward and free taker from Strand Road. Good to see local ladies featuring for Kerry. That is due reward for their mentors and the great work by dedicated coaches. And it all began at the Saturday morning academies. Patrons should go early and support the women in the ladies final. Throw-in is at 12.15pm.
KERRY V LIMERICK
Kerry got the ideal preparation they need for tomorrow’s game when Cork put it up to them for 50 minutes in the recent semi-final. Kerry cut loose from there on and won by a canter, as I expected they would. Séanie O’Shea went into double figures as Cork double-marked David Clifford and further crowded the scoring zone orchestrated by Seán Powter. Nothing less than the Sam Maguire will
appease Kerry supporters this year, still smarting after galling defeats during the Peter Keane era. The potential for Sam is there, but trying to convert five minor All-Irelands to senior success has been frustrating. Kerry have the potential to win this year’s All-Ireland, but are no certainties, yet. They will win tomorrow’s Munster final. Limerick had a great run in the league and deserved to beat Tipperary, but they are no thoroughbreds. Tomorrow’s game is a big step up for Billy Lee’s charges. The Newcastlewest man knows that football is very much in third place in Limerick with Munster rugby and the high flying hurlers on song. They have not won a football All Ireland since 1896. It isn’t that long ago since many players stepped away from the panel when they weren’t fed after a training session. It wouldn’t happen to the hurlers, strongly backed by JP McManus. In the past, managers Mickey Ned O’Sullivan and Johnno Keeffe did make progress, especially in 2003 and in 2004 when Limerick took Kerry to a replay. A few mighty leps by Darragh Ó Sé in the middle of the field broke the stranglehold of John Galvin, the brilliant Kerryman playing for Limerick. The Kerry trainer that day slipped in a young lad named David Moran. The same trainer will surely do the same at some stage tomorrow. Jack O’Connor has a fierce memory. Limerick gave Kerry enough of it in the replay at Fitzgerald Stadium. Paudie Kissane and Liam Kearns made little progress, but Billy Lee has made good progress through the lower divisions. Next year they’ll meet Dublin, Meath, Cork and Kildare in Division 2. They will put it up to Kerry for as long as possible and then the scoreboard will dance.
KERRY HURLERS
What a brave display in far away Corrigan Park, Antrim last weekend when somehow the Kerry hurlers lifted their game to defeat the home side by 0-29 to 2-21. They were well on top thanks to the immaculate free-taking of Pádraig Boyle (15 points), but they got a fright when Antrim struck for two late goals. The other results favoured Kerry so they and Antrim will do it all over again in the McDonagh Cup final at Croke Park on June 4 at 4.30pm. They have had so many disappointments in search of this cup. They lost the 2020 final, narrowly, but manager Stephen Molumphy has done a great job and hopes are high that this will be their year. The carrot is that if Kerry win they will meet Tipperary in a crunch relegation tie. Imagine that, Tipperary being relegated at the hands of Kerry…

Visibility is the name of the game Tom Doherty seriously injured his spine as a teenager but that never stopped him from pursuing his sporting interests. Here he talks to Adam Moynihan about his recent exploits on the golf course, as well as Ireland’s burgeoning disabled sports scene. Former town mayor Tom Doherty says awareness around disabilities is “springing forward” as sporting bodies, businesses and communities strive to become more inclusive. Doherty, who suffered a spinal injury when he was 15 and now walks with the assistance of a cane, is witnessing this trend first hand as a member of Ireland’s disabled golf scene. The Killarney native recently took part in the Disabled and Inclusive Golf Association of Ireland outing at Slieve Russell Golf Club in Cavan before flying out to England for a European Disability Golf Association tour event at Stoneleigh Deer Park Golf Club. Doherty claimed first place in the stableford category at the Royal Leamington venue. He is now looking forward to the inaugural Irish Open for golfers with a disability, which will take place in Roganstown Country Club in Dublin at the beginning of July. “Golf Ireland are doing a lot of work behind the scenes for inclusivity, which is
great,” Doherty told the Killarney Advertiser. “They’re putting a lot of time into it. “Clubs are opening up and people are getting more educated about disabilities and access. If you can help someone to overcome whatever barriers they have, golf is open to everyone.” Golfers with visual impairment, cerebral palsy, spinal injuries and those who are amputees all compete on the Irish circuit. “There’s specialised equipment out there,” Doherty explains. “A person who is a full-time wheelchair user can get a specially designed ‘Paragolfer’ machine that is fully adaptable, and that can carry them around specifically on a golf course. It will raise the golfer, according to the level of their disability, to take their shot, and away they go. “There are special rules for golfers with certain disabilities – for example if a bunker is a certain size and their buggy is too big for it, they’ll get a drop. Still under penalty. A bad shot is still a bad shot!” The former town councillor, who now works with the HSE, has been a disabilities advocate for many years and he has

noticed a major cultural shift in recent times in particular. “It’s great to see awareness and opportunities and education really springing forward now. It’s very exciting. It has been happening for a number of years but now it’s really blossoming.” Visibility is an important part of this, Doherty insists, and local Paralympian Jordan Lee from the Killarney Valley club has been an important figure in this regard. “I was actually competing the same day
27.05.2022 Jordan did his first official high jump (Doherty has represented Ireland in the discus, javelin and shot putt – he has also played basketball with the Kingdom Wheel Blasters and the Limerick Celtics). “Jordan has turned into a big hero for kids, and a big brand name and an ambassador. At the end of the day, 17% of people have a disability. It’s a specific market but it’s a lot of people, and I think brands and industry are realising this more and more. And a lot of larger companies are becoming more connected to the community, which is a great thing. “The kids look up to Jordan and, when it comes down to it, he’s another Irish athlete who gives it his all. “Take the ‘dis’ out of ‘disability’ and you have ‘ability’. At first, young people might look at Jordan and say, ‘look, daddy, he’s got one arm’. But then eventually they go, ‘that’s Jordan the athlete, look how high he can jump’. “Visibility is a huge thing. That’s the name of the game.”

Nothing but blue skies for Connie’s classic There's a distinct possibility that Connie Brosnan had a word in the ear of the man himself given the dramatic change in weather conditions that welcomed the early starters in the St Paul's Basketball Club Golf Classic, played in the immaculate yet challenging Beaufort Golf Club. Heavy and torrential overnight rain gave way to blue skies, sunshine and a tanning westerly breeze. This event, held in the memory of Connie, was a huge success and no doubt he would have enjoyed the day's proceedings from his lofty perch above. Fittingly, the winners came from a course he graced for many years. The skilled quartet from Killarney Golf Club, namely Brendan O’Toole, Enda Murphy, and Baden and Michael Maher, showed they are masters of more than their home course with a superb return of 89 points. As good as they were, they only squeezed home on the back six from
the Speakeasy Bar team of Mike Dwyer, Kevin Lynch, Alan Daly and John McCarthy. Hot on both their tails was Frank Doran and his Safeguard Security team of Diarmaid O’Shea, Harry O'Neill and Damien Callinan who hit a very impressive 88 points.

U13: Killarney Athletic 1 Inter Kenmare 1. Our Blues finished their U13 campaign down in Kenmare. Kenmare started brighter and our lads had to defend well while trying to get a foothold in the game. Back and forth the game went until 10 mins before half-time when Athletic got a free kick after the impressive James O’Callaghan was fouled. Up stepped Jayden Hurley who struck the free kick into the top corner. Athletic should have doubled their lead from good chances from Conor Moynihan and the ever reliable Callum Cox. In second half Athletic were under a lot of pressure and Kenmare leveled the game with 15 mins to go.

Killarney Legion GAA JUVENILE BOYS UPDATE: The initial phase of the U11 Go Games came to a close this week when we welcomed Churchill to Direen. The usual determi-
nation and skills were on show and special thanks to Ryan Twomey and John Keane who took the whistle for the two games. There were mixed fortunes for our U13 boys teams on Sunday night. Our Green Team had a real ding dong struggle with Austin Stacks with the lead exchanging hands regularly throughout the game. With the scores level at 1-5 a piece at half-time the Rockies had marginally the better of the second half to win by 2 points (2-10 to 2-8). The White team picked up from where they left off in Phase 1 when they outscored a gallant St Pats team. LADIES UPDATE: The senior ladies were in Milltown Sunday morning where they faced MKL Gaels in the latest round of the Donal Curtin Cup. With the aid of a stiff breeze in the first half they led 0-8 to 1-2 at half time despite the disadvantage of being a player down for 10 minutes due to a sin binning. This was thanks to the accuracy of Ciara Randles, Ann Marie O’Sullivan, Andrea Murphy and Chloe Hue. Playing against the elements in the second half every score was precious, none more than an Aine Devlin goal while Ciara Randles and Chloe Hue added to their totals. MKL battled hard to close the gap but the defensive team work of the Legion Ladies won out in the end. Killarney Legion 1-13 MKL Gaels 2-8. LOTTO: Sunday, May 15. Numbers 13, 20, 22, 28. Bonus 8. Early first half goals by Mark O’Shea and Jordan Kiely laid the foundations for our win over Ballymacelligott last Saturday evening. The second saw two further goals, from O’Shea and the ageless John Payne, with us running out comfortable winners on the night. It was a fantastic event for our young players to be involved with and they did their club, their families and most importantly themselves proud. Glenflesk GAA GIRLS U14: County League Division 3 Final. Congratulations to our U14 girls who won the County League Division 3 Cup Final against Moyvane in Tralee.
