"Let us all open together" - say Killarney publicans
Killarney publicans have put up a united front in calling for the Government to let all pubs reopen – regardless if they serve food or not – once the current Level 5 restrictions are lifted. | By Sean Moriarty The Government is expected to make an announcement today (Friday), but it remains unclear what level of restrictions will be put in place to replace them. Under Level 3 restrictions the so-called wet pubs can serve drinks in an outdoor setting to no more than 15 people while bars that offer food are subject to a different set of rules. Paudie O’Callaghan’s family run the Fáilte Hotel on College St. During the summer he was allowed open as he also has a licensed restaurant connected to the bar while his colleagues who only sold drinks were forced to stay closed. “I don’t agree with not allowing wet pubs to open,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. His brother Niall, a local councillor, but speaking as a business owner, also said it was unfair to differentiate between food and non-food bars. He said that if more pubs were allowed to reopen it would allow better control over numbers and that the expected large crowds over Christmas could be dispersed across a lot more premises. “I was turning people away over the summer, these are friends and loyal custom-

ers, I just did not have a table for them,” he said.
THE FALL GUYS
Killarney publicans say they are sick of being made the “fall guys” as the Government continues to switch from different levels of restrictions aimed at curbing the spread of COVID-19. They argue that there was no evidence that pubs, when open during the summer months, contributed to the increase of Coronavirus cases. “Of the 7,500 cases in the country, 22 were directly associated with pubs, 11 in hotels and 38 in restaurants,” John O’Shea who runs JC O’Shea’s Bar on High St, said. “Country pubs are destroyed, there is a big difference between a bar on Leeson St and bar in Kerry, but we are all being painted with the one brush, the Government does not trust the pubs but there is
no evidence to back this up.” Patrick 'Tatler' O’Sullivan, whose family have operated the Tatler Jack on College St for decades, hit out against what he described as the Government’s lack of planning. “If we are going to be allowed reopen, give us time to do this, it is not a case of flicking a switch, it is the same when they closed us,” he said. He also raised concerns about the mental health of customers. “People come into the bar for lunch to have a drink and to meet people,” he said. “The big difference with the first lockdown is the weather – people can't go anywhere.” Another issue raised by the publicans was the proposed closing time of 10pm. “What is this going to do, put hundreds of people onto the street at the same time, and what are they going to do – jump into
Cllr Kelleher set to take Chamber chain | By Sean Moriarty Cllr Niall Kelleher was yesterday (Thursday) both selected and elected as the new president of the Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce. He will take over the Chain of Office on January 1 following yesterday afternoon’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Chamber, the first time that the Chamber’s meeting took place online. Cllr Kelleher, who served as vice presi-
dent, will take over from Paul Sherry and will hold office for two years. “I have big shoes to fill,” he told the meeting. Mr Kelleher was proposed by Bernadette Randles and seconded by Laura Tangney and was elected unopposed. Mr Sherry thanked the Chamber and the wider business community for the support he received during his two-year stint at the helm. He said he was particularly proud that Fáilte Ireland named Killarney as one of the top two (along with Galway) stayca-
tion destinations during this year’s difficult season. He also highlighted the Killarney Staycation campaign 'Welcome to Space 2020’, the online campaign promoting the town as a tourist destination which resulted in over five million page web impressions. The Wild Atlantic Way Gateway project, which is set to be formally announced next week, was another project the outgoing president played a key role in. “It was a pleasure to represent the town and businesses of Killarney,” he told the meeting. “It has been an amazing time.”
Gardai injured in car chase | By Sean Moriarty Two Gardai were injured following a high-speed chase that ended at Listry Bridge in the early hours of last Saturday morning. The chase began near Cahersiveen when two teenagers failed to stop at a routine check point near the south Kerry town. The patrol unit gave chase and the Killarney Advertiser understands that a road block, using a unmarked garda car, was placed at Listry Bridge. The unmarked car was rammed in the incident resulting in undisclosed injuries to two Gardai. A Garda spokesperson confirmed to the Killarney Advertiser that one of the teenagers was arrested at the scene. “He was arrested under the road traffic offences and was later realised without charge,” the source told the Killarney Advertiser. taxis and go to house parties,” warned Niall ‘Botty’. “There is more control in pubs.” They also raised concerns about another potential lockdown in January, should cases rise after the Christmas holiday. Their main concern on this point was for the financial well-being of their staff. Currently, staff receive a percentage of their wages via the PUP scheme. If they go back to work they will lose the payment but they are concerned that there will be difficulties reapplying for PUP if they were out of work again in the New Year. “These people have families, mortgages,” added Mr O’Sullivan. “They are on and off the PUP. There is too much uncertainty.”
Christmas lights switch on This weekend the Christmas lights will be officially switched on in the town. According to Kerry County Council, the current restrictions don’t allow the holding of the traditional Christmas Lights Ceremony in Killarney this year but the lights will be switched on by the Cathaoirleach, Cllr Brendan Cronin over the weekend. "Kerry County Council will be sharing images and videos of the switching on of the lights on our social media channels over the weekend."

Santa helpers now doing home visits | By Sean Moriarty It's not a case of the elf on the shelf this Christmas - instead elves are planning to come to life and visit excited children outside their homes.
EMOTIONAL: Alexander Collins pictured delivering a present to his grandmother Mags Roche is one of a few children from the Holy Cross Mercy Preschool is emotional video online.
Emotional preschool festive video clocks up over 10k views At this time of year everyone waits in anticipation of the infamous John Lewis adverts - but from now on it'll instead be a local preschool - after their emotional video online this week clocked up over 10,000 views. | By Michelle Crean Knowing the difficulty this year has brought to children and their grandparents over the COVID restrictions, staff from Holy Cross Mercy Preschool decided to take matters into their own hands and make their own heartwarming video. Within the first 24 hours, the ‘Believe In The Magic Of Christmas’ video was viewed more than 10,000 times and has even been viewed and shared in Ireland, UK, USA, Spain and Poland to name a few - and is still going strong! Staff at the preschool have been overwhelmed by the positive reaction and huge feedback received after their video was uploaded to their Facebook and Instagram pages this week. Staff member, Katie O'Connor, who has a background in media and a very creative eye, had a vision to bring all elements of this feel-good, uplifting video together. "We're just trying to bring a bit of joy to the children and their families," Katie told the Killarney Advertiser. "They were delighted and said it really brightened up their day. I heard from a few people that it made them cry. It really hits home and is really relevant at this time of year, especially this year." The video summarises the story of the children preparing personalised gifts for their grandparents who are apart from them and the delight when the
gifts are delivered and received. This year’s Christmas decorations – made by the preschoolers – were very meaningful and appropriate in that they contained photographs of the children with their loved ones – some they have not been able to meet due to the ongoing COVID restrictions. "Katie and staff were very mindful to follow all public health guidelines during organisation and recording of the video," Marie Slattery from the preschool said. "Even Connie O'Shea the postman was carefully chosen as he is a relative to one of the children and the grandparent. He went above and beyond to help out as he donned his postman uniform on a Sunday to enable Katie to record." What makes it even more special, Katie remarked, is that none of these interactions in the video were rehearsed or staged – they were all genuine precious moments captured exactly as it happened. "We would like to take this opportunity to thank all those involved in the production of the video, Katie for her vision and the staff of the preschool who ably and enthusiastically helped. A special word of thanks goes to the children, parents and grandparents who brought the magic alive by simply showing their love. Feedback through the Facebook, Instagram, text messages, phone-calls and general word of mouth has been phenomenal."
At a time when it is not possible for Santa Claus to welcome children to his town centre grotto, his helpers have joined forces with O’Callaghan Coaches so they can visit children in their own homes. In the run up to Christmas, the family coach firm would usually be flat out ferrying Christmas shoppers to and from Dublin, Belfast and other destinations. Apart from their school work, their fleet is effectively parked up and with office staff and drivers available to work, but with little else happening, they have come up with a novel idea to bring Christmas cheer to your own front door. O’Callaghan Coaches are working with Tom Kennedy of Experience Ireland Golf and Travel. The two companies retrained five of their staff, some drivers and some office workers, as fully-qualified elves with the support from Fiona Crowley of Killarney Stage School, and have adapted one of their minibuses into an elf-mobile.
“I saw the idea in Cork and ran it past my team and they all jumped on it,” Phillip O’Callaghan told the Killarney Advertiser. “We are bringing some Christmas cheer to the town, but is has also helped raise our own spirits too in a difficult year.” Each visit includes a personal poem read out by the elves, a gift pack and a certificate of good behaviour signed by Santa Claus himself. Full COVID-19 protocols are exercised during each visit including a socially distanced photo and all activities take place outdoors. Santa’s Helpers will be visiting homes in the Killarney area until December 22. To book go to www.santashelpers.ie.

Another Madam’s Hill crash highlights dangers locals face | By Sean Moriarty Residents of the Tralee Road area are, again, calling for action on the Madam’s Hill junction following yet another accident there on Friday last. Killarney Fire and Rescue and the Gardai attended a two car crash at the notorious junction just after 3pm last Friday and while there were no reports of injuries, the incident has reaffirmed the long-term concerns of residents. Kerry County Council, in conjunction with Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII), recently concluded a traffic survey at the junction, the results of which will help determine a new layout for the junction. However, locals say the project is taking far too long and there are fears that lives will be lost or motorists will suffer serious injuries unless the work is completed sooner rather than later. Kathleen O'Reagan-Sheppard runs the landmark Kathleen’s Country House a
short distance from Madam’s Hill. Her customers have been raising concerns over the junction there for years. “This [accident] happened at a time when there are only locals around who know the junction,” she told the Killarney Advertiser. “Tourists coming from Aghadoe won’t know the junction and many of them are used to driving on the opposite side of the road. It gets frustrating there and people try to force a way out.” Earlier this month, following a deputation to a Killarney Municipal District meeting, the Ballydribeen Residents Association were promised that any work related to their estate would be included in the future Madam’s Hill project. The residents there are concerned about access to and from their busy street onto the busy Tralee road as well as other safety issues. “It is all linked,” said Ballydribeen Residents Association Chairman Liam Grimes. “This highlights the daily issues we are facing.”

Gearing up for 8,000 km cycle
On Friday, all staff and students in Killarney Community College were invited to participate and show their support for Stand Up Week by wearing a rainbow colour. The week is a time for second-level schools in Ireland to take a stand against homophobic, biphobic and transphobic bullying. Staff and students wanted to show that their school is a safe, supportive and inclusive environment for all. Students who made a particularly great effort in terms of wearing rainbow colours were awarded house points.
During the week, the LGBTI+ flag was flying outside and hanging proudly in the school canteen. In SPHE classes, students had discussions around what it means to LGBT in Ireland, words they use and why they are important, and tips on standing up to language that hurts. "It's important to get the message across to everyone in the college and community that our school is a safe and welcoming environment for all our students and that we will not stand or tolerate bullying in any form when it comes to LGBTQ matters," Principal Stella Loughnane said. "This was a day of celebration, colour and inclusion highlighting and educating everyone in relation to LGBTQ discrimination."
Locals are hoping to take on an epic 8000km charity cycle without leaving Killarney town or even the gym - as they are planning a fundraiser next month. | By Michelle Crean From December 14 to 20, a group are planning to take on the charity fitness cycle on stationary bikes in a socially distanced manner at Studio 7 Fitness Killarney on New Street. Some of the names who have committed to cycle a few kilometres include Kerry footballers Tony Brosnan, Paudie Clifford and Sean O'Shea and former player Eoin Brosnan, Sean Taaffe, The Brand Geeks, ultra runner and owner of the Black Sheep Hostel Kevin Leahy, and the Mayor of Kerry, Patrick Connor-Scarteen to name a few. Each will cycle as many kilometres as possible to help clock up the miles to keep the charity event in gear. The event will not only will raise awareness about the charity but also raise some very necessary funds for ‘The Kenya Education Project’ founded by Killarney man Eddie Sheehy in 2003. Eddie and his co-workers help create awareness of the difficulties faced by families in Kenya which are even more compounded this
year with COVID-19. The charity provides food and education for hundreds of children on or below the poverty line in Kenya. The charity also works in conjunction with St Vincent de Paul helping deliver clothes as well as financial aid to families. "I wanted to come up with an idea on how we could help raise money as well as finish off a tough year on a good note," Michael Lindsay from Studio 7 Fitness Killarney told the Killarney Advertiser. "My Senior Fitness Coach, Aaron Morris came up with the idea of the ‘Kerry to Kenya’ charity cycle. The journey often undertaken by Eddie and his co-workers comes to just shy of 8,000kms. We hope to recreate this journey using stationary socially distanced bikes in our gym in Killarney, guidelines dependant, over a seven day span where people can sign up to cycle and or donate as little or as much as they want to help us reach our fundraising target." Tree of Remembrance ceremony goes online | By Sean Moriarty The Franciscan Friars are taking their annual remembrance ceremony online tonight (Friday) to comply with Level 5 restrictions. The annual ceremony, which will take place at 8pm, will go ahead without parishioners this year. Instead, the Friars will gather around The Tree of Remembrance to pray for all those named on the tree. The ceremony will be live-streamed on Facebook: killarneyfranciscans. “Unfortunately we cannot have people here to be part of the ceremony but it is important to say that the Brothers and Friars will be remembering loved ones and the deceased at this time," said Ann Marie O’Leary of the Friary Office. Five schools but one mission - to fundraise!
Last year's fundraiser was an overwhelming success - raising a whopping €12,000 - and now five schools are joining together to do it all again for another very good cause.
| By Michelle Crean The Sem, Killarney Community College, Holy Cross Mercy, Presentation Monastery, and St Francis Special School - who last year held the fundraising Christmas Jumper Day in memory of the much loved past St Brendan’s College student Niall McGillicuddy, are once again combining their efforts - this time in aid of the Kerry Hospice Foundation. On Friday, December 18 the students and staff across all five schools will don festive jumpers and donate to this very important facility; one which, like many others across the country, has seen its fundraising activities hit hard by the COVID crisis. "We were honestly bowled over by the response to last year’s fundraiser – both across the participating schools and among the wider community," Elaine Moynihan, LCVP teacher said. "The flurry of donations that arrived over the week of that fundraiser was completely unexpected and hugely significant in allowing us to raise the
amount that we did. While 2020 has been a devastating year for many, it is also one which showed us the power of community spirit – the potential to achieve great things when we work together. Given the success of last year’s coordinated effort, it made sense that we approach the other schools and invite them to get involved. We were delighted, but not surprised, when all four, without hesitation, agreed." She added that they are again hoping to have the same community support once again. "We would love for the public to get behind this; particularly anyone who has benefited from the Palliative services of University Hospital Kerry and is looking for a medium through which to give back. Obviously with COVID, and the current restrictions, it is no longer as easy to drop donations in but if anyone would like to support this worthy cause, donations can be posted, in care of the Kerry Hospice Foundation fundraiser, to the Sem or any of the other participating schools."
Funded by the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media the gigs - which will provide a total of 893 days of employment for 205 people - will take place in December under the Live Performance Support Scheme. The line-up of concerts includes well known acts - Picture This, Gavin James, Aslan, The Academic and Hermitage Green. Rising stars Junior Brother, Brad Heidi, Moncrieff and Bird on the Wire are also in the mix. Irish traditional music features strongly with performances by Celtic Steps and The O’Neill Sisters and also The Sibin Orchestra featuring Seamus Begley, Méabh Ní Bheaglaoich, Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh, Éilís Kennedy, Pauline Scanlon, Laura Kerr, Donogh Hennessy, Jeremy Spencer and Gerry O’Beirne. While live audiences will not be permit-
ted under the Plan for Living with COVID-19, the performances will be recorded for either streaming or promotional purposes. “Behind the scenes of every gig is a hardworking team of technical and support personnel," Mark Egan, Director of the Gleneagle INEC Arena said. "The Live Performance Support Scheme allows us to provide employment for performers but also for the vital cog of technicians and performance support staff that make live music gigs possible. It also will provide us with live music content that can be streamed online or used to promote Ireland’s live music industry both at home and overseas. We would like to thank the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media for their support. We would also like to thank the various artists that have reduced their performance costs in order to make these gigs happen. These are unprecedented times for the live performance industry and support schemes such as this are vital to ensure the industry remains intact post COVID.”

A year of starts and sudden stops for local singer It's been "a year of starts and sudden stops" for local singer Grace Foley - and this is the opening line in her brand-new song which is set to be released as part of her full Christmas EP today (Friday). | By Michelle Crean Grace will launch the EP with a Facebook and Instagram live, today (Friday) at 8pm. There she will be singing the songs from the EP and telling stories behind the songs. The singer who has been narrowly avoiding lockdowns all year tells us what 2020 has been like for her. This has been a very mixed year. Like all of her peers in the entertainment industry, the Killarney singer desperately misses performing live in front of an audience. She misses the buzz, the sharing of stories and songs and the interaction with people after her concerts. On the other side of things, 2020 has been a great year in terms of her creativity. Grace recorded three of her singles for the year
back in the spring and then her music videos on March 12, the day it was announced that the country was starting to close down due to COVID-19. Since then, Grace has gone on to perform many live online concerts, both on her own social media platforms and on pages across Ireland and America as well as a live concert in St Mary's Cathedral Killarney which was broadcast via the parish webcam. She wrote and released a song called ‘Together Apart’ which she recorded in her wardrobe and the songstress even appeared on RTE television on the 'Today Show' where she sang live from her living room with her little dog Kerri on her lap! Grace was thrilled when she received the news that she had been awarded Arts Council funding to write and record her own songs which she went on to record

at Ventry Recording Studio in Balbriggan, County Dublin. Yet again, Grace couldn’t believe that she had just finished her songs when it was announced that Dublin was facing further restrictions meaning she would not have been able to record had she arrived a day later! Her last near miss with lockdown came in late October when she recorded her last music videos for the year only to finish up for the day and get a notification on her phone that the entire country was moving to Level 5 lockdown. One of the songs recorded with her Arts Council funding is a Christmas song and, with a nudge from her husband John, Grace decided to throw caution to the wind and release a full Christmas EP!
This is released today (Friday), and features four festive favourites, recorded at Little Dylan Studios Killarney, as well as Grace’s own song, ‘Goodbye to Dublin’. The EP titled ‘A Time for Christmas, Vol. 1’ is available on www.gracefoley.ie from November 27 and on all online platforms from December 11. "Those who buy physical copies of the record will be awarded with a song that is not available on digital platforms," Grace said. "While the future for performers is still very unsure, I will always look back on 2020 as the year when music became so much more than a career. It became a lifeline for the present, a connection to the past and a ray of hope for the future."
Magical experience to benefit local groups | By Michelle Crean Santa Claus is coming to town - and to help keep him safe, he'll be in a special "bubble" - but is excitedly getting ready to meet local children.
EXCITEMENT: Ryan Lynch and his friends will run a sweet shop at The Killarney Christmas Tree Farm which promises a magical Santa experience for all.
The elves have worked their magic and are bringing the man in red to Killarney before he gets too busy in his workshop making toys. Tonight (Friday) from 6pm he is planning a trip from Killorglin in a special red open top Mercedes and will make his way to Beaufort where he will pass by slowly waving at the children before driving through Killarney town. Then it's off to The Killarney Christmas Tree Farm where he'll eagerly await visiting children tomorrow (Saturday) and Sunday. With a fairy trail, festive wooden decorations made by Killarney Community College students, a dock with hot chocolate and refreshments - and even a sweet shop, it promises to be a magical experience. An idea by Nicola Lynch and her father Nick Foley, the trail will light up in different colours resembling the northern
lights. Santa will be in one giant four metre by four metre bubble lit red where he can interact with the children. A second bubble of the same size further away will have three naughty elves inside. "When we put it online it completely booked out immediately and the website crashed," Nicola told the Killarney Advertiser. "When someone buys a Christmas tree or a wreath they get a golden ticket to get in. He'll be here every Saturday from 12-6 and Sunday in the run up to Christmas. We can only have three families at a time every half hour due to social distancing." However, the idea is not concentrating on profit - as charities and groups will benefit including St Vincent de Paul with the money staying locally, and the Tralee Soup Kitchen. Her eight-year-old son Ryan and his friends are also running a sweet shop which raised €650 which they're donating to Fossa GAA Club. "There is also a post box for the kids - but it's different - as we're asking them to write their letters which I will post to local care homes." For now it's all booked out but follow their Facebook page: Killarney Christmas Trees for updates.

A Kilcummin school girl is hoping the hairdressers go ahead and reopen next week as she's set to cut 14 inches of her hair for a sick little girl. | By Michelle Crean 12-year-old Holly Carey, from Knocklebede, Kilcummin, whose hair is currently 31 inches long, has set up her own GoFundMe page to raise funds to ‘Chloe’s Journey’. Next Thursday, December 4, Holly and her mom Catherina will pay a visit to Mirash Hair and Beauty on Park Road where she'll get the chop. Holly will then donate her beautiful hair to the Rapunzel Foundation who make wigs for children who have lost their own hair through cancer and all funds raised will go to Chloe’s family. Little Chloe, whose mom Deborah is from Killorglin, is battling Neuroblastoma, a rare and very aggressive cancer which she was diagnosed with on March the 17, 2019. The tumour was so large that it had spread across much of her abdomen
and wrapped around several vital organs. Chloe started chemotherapy in Crumlin Children's Hospital, with 'Chloe's Journey' founded to help her and her parents to deal with the lengthy hospital stays, oversea treatment and her ongoing care. Holly was aware of Chloe's fight against the illness as her mom is friends with Chloe's aunt Helen Kelly. "I have wanted to do it for a long time," Holly told the Killarney Advertiser. Gleeson is concerned that many areas of interest remain out of bounds to visitors and locals as they are on private lands. Visiting such sites is only possible with the consent of the owner but many landowners are slow to grant permission as they are fearful that they could be open to insurance claims if visitors suffer an injury or accident. At the November 2020 monthly online meeting of Kerry County Council, Councillor Michael Gleeson proposed: "As the 'Staycation' initiative proved so successful and we all discovered some of the great natural and constructed historic treasures of our county and country, that this Council once again calls on Government to introduce the legislation necessary to give immunity from prosecution to land and property owners on whose property or land a visitor suffers an accident or injury". Councillor Gleeson said that during the
pandemic lockdown so many people have discovered many wonderful aspects and locations in our own country. “They have found nature trails and visited precious ancient monuments. They have been enthralled and enriched,” he said. “They have also heard of and maybe at a distance seen many beautiful and historic locations that are sadly inaccessible because they are on private property. Throughout Kerry there are hundreds of such locations that may only be visited with the consent of the owner. As an example, there is one such very famous monument within two kilometres of my home and I have never visited because the site is on privately owned lands. “This sad state of affairs is due to the absolute failure by Governments, past and present, to introduce legislation granting immunity to land and property owners from prosecution in the event of persons injuring themselves while visiting these precious sites and buildings. As we all agree on the importance of shopping locally we should also be focused on making all that is best and most precious from our past accessible to the many who would love to visit.”
TII approves contract for Rathmore works Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) has confirmed an allocation of funding for work on the redevelopment of Rathmore town. This will include an overlay of the N72 with the provision of new footpaths, two pedestrian crossings and bus stops as well as undergrounding of the public lighting. “This is welcome news for a community that has been struggling for many decades because of a severe lack of investment previously,” Cllr Niall Kelle-
her said. “The funding from the TII will be spent alongside the funding previously allocated under the Town and Village Renewal Scheme and Leader and Clár funding as well as allocations from councillors." This news comes on top of confirmation of the appointment of GLAS Construction for the removal of Stagmount bends to the west of Rathmore town. Cllr Kelleher has acknowledged the work done on Stagmount bends by his former Council colleague John Sheahan.

SANTA LETTERS: Denis, Emily and Chloe O'Connor pictured at the special Santa postbox at Spa GAA clubhouse.
Santa declares Spa GAA Club as official letter collection point
| By Sean Moriarty Spa GAA Club is one of several official collection points for Santa letters in Killarney. A special post box has been installed at the entrance to the club’s playing field in Spa where local children can drop off the letters to Santa Clause. Club officials, this week, confirmed that the post box will be in position for the next three weeks so children have plenty of time to get their letters to Santa. Once the three weeks are up, one of Santa’s Elves will collect the letters and have them delivered to the North Pole in time for his world-wide voyage on
Christmas Eve. “We had a very special delivery at the clubhouse over the weekend as Santa’s little helpers delivered a Christmas post box to the clubhouse. It is located near the road entrance under the sponsorship sign and we also have Santa letters available. Everyone can post their Santa letters here for express delivery straight to the North Pole,” Deirdre O'Sullivan Darcy PRO, Spa GAA Club, said. Parents can also take photos of their children using the special post box and can send them to either 085 7780883 or 085 1216359 to be included in the club’s social media posts and the club's 2020 Christmas photo album.

Raw sewerage in Beaufort homes is "scandalous" - claims councillor Raw sewage getting into dishwashers - resulting in residents becoming ill - is "scandalous" claims a local County Councillor. Councillor Michael Cahill is calling on Kerry County Council, Irish Water and the Department to urgently address a sewerage scheme in the Beaufort area which he says has not been operational for years. At a recent Municipal District meeting he described the current situation being faced by the residents of Coolmagort Avenue, Beaufort as "a major health and safety issue". "This situation should not be tolerated and needs to be addressed as a matter of extreme urgency." Director of Water Services, John Breen gave the following response. Reply: "There are serious deficiencies in the wastewater treatment plant, which has not functioned for many years, in this 21-house, privately constructed estate in Beaufort. The residents have hired a contractor on occasion to de-sludge the tank.
In 2018, the residents engaged a consulting engineer to find a solution to the problem. The necessary upgrade works were provisionally estimated at €140,000. Planning Permission would be required for any such proposed works in this estate. It is Irish Water’s policy that it will not take over any such stand-alone, developer-provided infrastructure, as per the Memorandum of Understanding that Irish Water has with the Local Authority Sector. On being again requested in November 2018 to de-sludge the tank, the Water Services department of Kerry Council undertook to do so one more time, on the understanding that the residents would organise and fund this in future. The charge for the intake of sludge from
Councillor Michael Cahill.
this estate will be waived at the Killarney Wastewater Treatment Plant. The Department Of Housing, Planning and Local Government sought submissions in late 2019 under a proposed new multi-annual funding programme - the Multi-Annual Developer Provided Water Services Infrastructure Resolution Pro-
gramme 2019-2021. This programme initially prioritises housing estates with Developer Provided Infrastructure which can be connected to a municipal wastewater treatment plant with adequate capacity. Beaufort Village has no such municipal water treatment plant. However, the first wave of investment under this programme includes for a small number of carefully selected demonstration projects. Funding for demonstration projects will allow a longer-term treatment strategy to be developed for settlements with a number of DPIs and the preparation of a Feasibility Study to recommend an appropriate solution. This approach would inform the department of locations where further allocations under this programme can be targeted. Beaufort Village was included, as a Demonstration Project, in the submission by KCC for funding. Kerry County Council understands that the Department will shortly announce funding allocations under this national programme".
Two Killarney hotels Christmas Bonus will be paid to Kerry social set the gold standard welfare and PUP recipients | By Sean Moriarty
The Christmas Bonus will be paid to Kerry social welfare and PUP recipients this year, the week beginning December 7. Deputy Government Chief Whip, Brendan Griffin TD yesterday (Thursday) said it was "confirmed to me by my colleague the Minister for Social Protection, Heather Humphreys, who has announced the details of the largest ever Christmas Bonus". “As always, people on long term social welfare benefits such as pensioners, people with disabilities, carers and lone parents will receive the 100% Christmas bonus. Those who have been in receipt of the Pandemic Unemployment Payment (PUP) continuously or otherwise - for at least four months (17 weeks) since March will also receive the Christmas Bonus this year. Minister Humphreys has also taken care to ensure that anyone returning to work next week as restrictions ease, will not be excluded from the Christmas Bonus, he added. "Any person in receipt of PUP for any one day from Friday, November 27 to
Thursday, December 3 will still receive the Christmas Bonus provided they also meet the 17 week requirement. So anyone returning to work this Monday or Tuesday will still receive the Christmas Bonus as they worked at least one day during the said period. The same criteria is also being applied to those on Jobseeker’s payments, who in previous years would have only received the Bonus if they had been out of work for at least 15 months." Announcing the record Christmas Bonus, Minister Humphreys urged people to spend it locally in order to support small businesses: “Christmas brings many extra financial pressures and I am particularly pleased to provide a 100% Christmas Bonus this year for over 1.6 million people. I would strongly encourage people to spend their Christmas Bonus locally this year and support our local shops and businesses in our towns and villages throughout the country. This will be a €390 million injection into the Irish economy at a time when many small businesses will be reopening their doors as restrictions are eased.”
The Killarney Park and Ross Hotels have been recognised for their commitment to eliminating single use plastics.
So far, 10 of 22 of the town’s hotels have been accredited by greenhospitality.ie, the promoters of the Green Hospitality Programme. The other hotels are awaiting final inspection by the promoters, a process that has been delayed by the current pandemic restrictions. Both the Killarney Park and Ross Hotels are the first two hotels to gain the Green Hospitality Gold Award. Under the guidance of Marcus and Ciara Treacy, the hotels were awarded the Plastic Smart GREENMark after eliminat-
ing single use plastics from both establishments. “We are delighted to see two hotels of this stature setting the standard in Killarney and Kerry,” Maurice Bergin of the Green Hospitality Programme told the Killarney Advertiser. Marcus Treacy, Operations Manager of the Killarney Park and Ross Hotels, said the awards were the fruition of months of hard work by the staff of his two hotels. “We have given a commitment to our staff, our customers and the place we live in,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “We all need to step up and take responsibility for the environment." Marcus is behind a separate programme which was launched last November during the National Tourism Forum in Killarney, which encourages sustainability in the industry on a local level.

Students and staff make huge donation to local charity Over 18 boxes packed full of food and €500 was this week donated to charity to help local families in need this Christmas. The Transition Year class of Killarney Community College collected food items from students and staff in the school. The entrepreneurial and fundraising spirit from the TY class exploded as they they themselves donated a hamper they produced as a reward for every item of food that each student donated to Killarney Lions Club. They also organised a non-uniform day that took place on Friday, and teachers enjoyed a special homemade surprise from the TY’s Home Economics class. The amazing committee of Lauren Fleming, Teagan O’Sullivan and Cian O’Shea led a fundraising campaign within the school. They raised awareness in the whole school community about the magnificent work of the local charity. It's all part of a three-school initiative which kicked off in mid-November when a Zoom call between Killarney Community College, St Brigid's and St Brendan's took place with the President of the club John Fuller and committee member Denis Doolan outlining how the three secondary schools would help the Lions Club fundraise and collect food to create hampers for people in need in the Killarney area.
DONATION
On Tuesday, President of Killarney Lions Club John Fuller with Denis Doolan packed up the boot of their car with 18 boxes of food that will be made into hampers. They were also presented with a donation of €506 from Principal Stella Loughnane to go towards the club's Christmas fundraiser. It was a privilege for Killarney Community College students and staff to take part in this year's Killarney Lions Club Christmas Food Appeal, Killarney Community College TY co-ordinator Kerri McCarthy, explained. “It was fantastic to see the enthusiasm and fundraising work of our students. They endeavoured to making the food appeal and donation a success," she said. "We are so proud of our wonderful students who excelled in this local fundraising activity in raising awareness for the Killarney Lions Club. Now more than ever it is so important to support local." Anyone who wishes to donate to the Christmas Food Appeal can do so at the following link: GoFundMe: On-LION Christmas Food Appeal.

nition of our expertise and service and we are extremely proud of the working partnerships we have created with our clients," he said.

Get involved in Christmas Jumper Day fundraiser Radio Kerry’s annual county wide Christmas Jumper Day fundraiser for St Vincent de Paul will be a COVID-19 friendly FUNdraising event.
BRINGING COMFORT: Gina Herlihy from Firies, pictured with the funds from last year's Little Women's Christmas event is hoping to raise even more funds online this year.
Gina hopes to bring comfort to the people of Kerry
One Firies lady is on a mission to raise as much funding as possible for 'Comfort for Chemo Kerry' to help those going through treatment to have more comfort. | By Michelle Crean Gina Herlihy, who normally organises a Little Women's Christmas event, has had to take her charity work online due to this year's restrictions. So far, over €2,500 has been raised of the €1,000 target set - and she's hoping for even more support. Gina began fundraising two years ago for Comfort for Chemo Kerry as she lost both parents to cancer. "I was 15-years-old when my mother died of breast cancer and she travelled up and down to Cork for her treatment," she explained. "My father was 62 but never had treatment. I know how much a new chemotherapy unit will mean to people who are in need of chemotherapy services in Kerry." She held two fundraising events over the past two years in the village of Firies and a total of €10,100 was raised. "The community spirit from the people of Firies and beyond was always amazing. Businesses and locals again this year are very generous. The charity is on a mission to raise €5m to build a new
state-of-the-art separate unit on the grounds of UHK for the people of Kerry and surrounding areas who are in need of chemotherapy services and I'm hoping that this fundraising raffle will generate much needed funds to help them along. Due to COVID I could not host the same event this year but wanted to still raise funds so I reached out to businesses for prizes and they and local people were only too delighted to donate." This fundraiser is all about this amazing charity, she added. "I'm extremely proud to be a fundraiser for them and I'm also very grateful to the people of Firies and Kerry and beyond for their continued support. Everyone has said how much they will miss the women’s night this year so I'm hoping that people will dress up in their Christmas jumpers and tune in live to the raffle on Facebook and they can take photos and send them in to me. I'll do a memory gallery afterwards and maybe we can show some photos of them and their excitement if they win." To donate and help the cause search GoFundMe: Christmas Raffle in aid of Comfort For Chemo Kerry.
Taking place on Friday, December 11, it is the seventh year of the fundraising initiative which to date has raised over €95,000. The 2020 target is to achieve at least €15,000. Participants can take part in their own local environment simply by wearing a Christmas Jumper and sharing a photo or video via social media, email, text and WhatsApp and make a donation to the St Vincent De Paul. Private individuals, families, school and university students, teachers, lecturers and administration teams, colleagues in small, medium and large enterprises – whether working from the office or home can all participate. Think Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, Tik Tok! “We wish to appeal to the people of Kerry to get involved and help us to help fellow Kerry people who are facing a very difficult Christmas," Paddy Kevane, President of The Society of St Vincent de Paul Kerry, said. Donations may be made directly to the St Vincent de Paul Kerry bank account, their shops around the county or to
Radio Kerry. This year there's an Online Donation service www.radiokerry.ie/donate and a dedicated phone line for donations (066) 712 8021 (Extension 1) with one hundred percent of the money going to St Vincent de Paul Kerry. "The money raised via Christmas Jumper Day is used to fund a number of St Vincent de Paul projects right across Kerry including Christmas food hampers, Santa gifts for children who are homeless and in direct provision, Christmas Day Meals on Wheels and the Kerry Education Fund. St Vincent de Paul operate a donation centre in Tralee, seven stores across their Conference areas in Tralee, Castleisland, Listowel, Killorglin, Killarney, Dingle and Abbeyfeale. "This year we’re encouraging you to make your own Christmas jumper for your chance to win a prize! We’ve got a hamper, a Kerry Gift Card and an SVP shop voucher to be won for the most creative entries! We are very grateful to everyone who has been a part of Radio Kerry’s Christmas Jumper Day in aid of St Vincent De Paul since 2014! Stay tuned to Radio Kerry for regular updates! The group, set up to offer help and support to patients with coronary and related illnesses, usually met in person once a month. At these meetings members could rely on advice from others who had gone through similar heart related medical issues and hear first-hand from fellow patients. Occasionally, the group would invite a medical expert to speak to members and offer advice ahead of a major surgery or post-surgery during the recovery phase. With crowd gathering rules in place to
help suppress the spread of Coronavirus, the group has moved its support meetings online via the Zoom platform. “I am aware of one person who was about to have major surgery but who had many concerns, we were able to organise a nurse to speak to them and support them ahead of their surgery,” HeartBeat Chair Billy O’Sullivan told the Killarney Advertiser. “It is in situations like this that HeartBeat really scores.” HeartBeat Killarney can be contacted on 086 1773 910. The group's next online meeting will take place on Monday next where Marie O’Sullivan from Slimming World will be talking about preparing, diet-wise, for Christmas and what treats are safe to have.

lights of the giant tree and his visit will be streamed live on The Brehon Facebook page at 5.30pm on Tuesday next, December 1. NEWS BRIEFS... Texaco Support for Sport deadline looming
CANDLE: Dr Croke's Pat O'Sullivan watches on as Club President Jackie Looney, and Teddy Counihan (representing his aunt, Margaret O'Leary) light a candle to mark 100 years of Bloody Sunday.
ONE HUNDRED YEARS: The Tricolour flying at half-mast at Dr Crokes pitch on Saturday night.
Bloody Sunday commemoration by Dr Crokes GAA Club Dr Croke’s GAA Club marked the 100 year anniversary of Bloody Sunday in a very special way. | By Sean Moriarty The town club was one of many to mark the centenary of one of the deadliest incidents during the War of Independence in 1920 - but the club’s links to its historical past run deeper than most other local clubs. For starters, the black and amber was the only club in Killarney at that time. And even then they were the most-successful in the county, racking up four county championship wins, in 1901 and a three-in-a-row between 1912 and 1914. Even today they remain top of the pile with 13 County Football Championship titles to their name. Austin Stack’s GAA Club in Tralee are next with 12. They say history repeats itself, and direct comparisons can be made between now and then, but for very different reasons. The War of Independence caused the cancellation of all GAA fixtures and instead of fighting a virus the nation was fighting against the Crown Forces. “Dr Crokes was the only GAA club in
x
town and with club football suspended in reality, until 1924, many of the Dr Crokes’ players spent their time drilling with the local members of the Irish Volunteers,” said club historian Eamonn Fitzgerald. The Black and Tans came to Ireland in March 1920 and the Auxiliaries in August 1920. A combination of these entered Croke Park on November 21, 1920, and shot dead 14 people, including three children. Many more were wounded. This was in retaliation to the shooting dead of 13 British Intelligence Officers and one civilian earlier that morning. Michael Collins’ notorious ‘Squad’ killed, or fatally wounded those 14 people.
SPECIAL EVENT
Sunday, November 21, 1920 is remembered as 'Bloody Sunday'. That happened 100 years ago last weekend and Croke’s held a special, albeit socially distanced event to mark the tragedy. “The national flag was flown at halfmast and two floodlit areas were in full light. At dusk, a small gathering lit a can-
dle in our clubhouse,” Eamonn, who is the author of the club’s biography, said. Club President Jackie Looney, assisted by Teddy Counihan, on behalf of his aunt, Margaret O'Leary lit the candle and placed it on display in one of the windows of the club house in the presence of Chairman Patrick O'Sullivan. “The link with Croke Park through Teddy Counihan and Margaret O'Leary is through Teddy's grandfather and Margaret's father ‘Small’ Jer O'Leary, who was instrumental in buying Croke Park,” added Eamonn. The GAA purchased Croke Park in 1914. Both the national stadium and the local club are named in honour of Archbishop Thomas Croke, one of the GAA's first patrons. A Cork man, no less, who, among many other achievements, was the second Bishop of Auckland in New Zealand. As for today and yesterday, football was not allowed in 1920 - but the shops were open. In the autumn of 1920, there was a pay dispute between Killarney drapers and their employees. The dispute of illegal assembly was referred to the then Minister for Labour, Countess Markievicz, Dáil Éireann – a bit like our current crowd gathering rules?
A reminder has been issued to registered sports clubs in Kerry that the December 31 closing date for receipt of completed applications under the Texaco Support for Sport club funding initiative is now nearing. Under the scheme, Valero Energy (Ireland) Limited – the company that markets fuel in Ireland under the Texaco brand – has set aside a fund of €130,000 to be divided on a 26 county-by-county basis with each successful club – including, it is hoped, one from Kerry – receiving an equal amount of €5,000 each. The scheme, first announced in September, is open to all sports clubs irrespective of sporting discipline, size, membership, age, cultural appeal or gender, the only requirement being that applicant clubs be properly constituted and hold a valid Games & Sports Number (GS Number) issued by the Office of the Revenue Commissioners. Dates for the announcement of winners and presentation of awards will be announced early next year. GARDEN MAGIC
Gardening - By Debby Looney
Debby is available for advice and garden consultations, just call 086 6088156 or email barnhillky@gmail.com
Suitable books for the gardener in your life Gardeners can be a predictable bunch, and you will often find us with our head in a gardening magazine or book. There are no wrong books to buy for the gardener, as almost all will contribute something to the knowledge we have. Books are by far my favourite gift to give at Christmas, and with many shops closed they are an easily accessible gift this year. In my opinion, the best book I have ever received is the Royal Horticultural Society’s ‘A-Z Encyclopedia of Garden Plants’. It has undergone several transformations since its original publication, and now comes in a beautiful carry case. There are thousands of photographs illustrating plants, but that is not its main charm. The book encompasses everything you need to know; the basics of botany, plant groups, pruning, diseases and soil types are all covered. When listing the plants it is done alphabetically, but common names are listed throughout also. So, if you only know the common name you will find it and be directed to the correct version. Each plant has a description, where it originated from, pests and diseases it is prone to and how to propagate and grow it. An absolutely invaluable tool to have – my copy is on the hall table, easily accessible at all times – anyone who knows me knows I do not trust labels on plants, but I will always trust this book! The RHS also have a very good veg growing book, ‘Step-by-Step Veg Patch’, which is crammed full of excellent advise while still being very clear and easy to follow. I firmly believe that when it comes to vegetable gardening, especially when
starting out, the clearer the book the better. Another great book for the veg grower is ‘The Irish Gardener’s Handbook’ by Michael Brenock, published by O’Brien Press. It has been around a while, but has the Irish garden in mind when written, which is important as we have such a particular climate! Klaus Laitenberger’s ‘Vegetables for the Irish Garden’ is also a source of inspiration – the pages are packed full of veg which will thrive here, their origins, uses over the years and how to grow them. A must for the veg enthusiast. There are many books available about more natural styles of gardening, such as the RHS ‘Companion to Wildlife Gardening’ by Chris Baines. I adore this book for its author’s obvious love of any creatures which visit our gardens. It covers every sort of habitat from ponds and meadows to urban spaces. It is a pure and simple joy to read, I cannot recommend it highly enough! One last book I will mention is for those who enjoy having cut flowers inside, 'Sarah Raven: The Cutting Garden’. It has lots of practical advice for growing suitable cut flowers in your own garden, what varieties to choose, how to enhance their beauty as well as how to prepare them for the vase. With beautiful pictures, it is very well written and an ideal gift for those who enjoy cut flowers. I hope these suggestions have given Santa some ideas!
‘Keep Well Kerry’ campaign offers free yoga sessions Building on the success of and feedback from the week-long Kerry Mental Health and Well-being Fest held in October, the interagency committee have organised a series of free online mindfulness and chair yoga sessions to take place for 15 minutes each weekday from November 30 to December 18. These morning mindfulness sessions from 11am – 11.15am and afternoon chair yoga sessions from 2pm – 2.15pm will be led by Susan Barrett and Maeve Ferris respectively. Anyone can watch these sessions live on the Healthy Kerry website at www.healthykerry.ie or Facebook page @healthycountykerry. These online series are being made possible due to the collaboration between Kerry County Council, the HSE, NEWKD, SKDP, Kerry Mental Health Association, Jigsaw Kerry, IT Tralee and Kerry Volunteer Centre. Launching the online sessions, the chairperson of Kerry Mental Health and Well-being Fest, Donagh Hennebry, said: “All adults in Kerry and workplaces to avail of these free 15-minute mindfulness and yoga sessions to help people to switch off, find ways to relax and support their general well-being during these difficult times. This is a perfect opportunity for employers to support
well-being in their workplace.” The Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr Patrick Connor-Scarteen, added that “the sessions are a key component of the local initiatives that are being developed and rolled out across the county under the national ‘Keep Well’ campaign. "I would encourage everyone to take part. Taking time out to relax and unwind is such an important thing to do at the present challenging time.” The 'Keep Well' campaign in Kerry complements the national Government campaign and focuses on five ways to support community well-being, which are: Keeping active and being outdoors even during the winter, it is important to help physical and mental health and well-being. Staying connected with people and addressing isolation as person-to-person connection is important to our well-being. Switching off and being creative learning something new, getting back to nature and finding ways to relax can help our general well-being. Eating well: by nourishing your body and mind we can positively impact our physical and mental well-being. Managing your mood: equipping people with information on where to go if they need support.

Support the 'Never Forgotten Appeal' The Irish Hospice Foundation’s (IHF) annual 'Never Forgotten Appeal', is raising money to support the charity’s bereavement services including the IHF Bereavement Support Line. IHF is a leader in the development of bereavement care in Ireland but relies heavily on donations from the public to support their services. Their work in bereavement includes Ireland’s first national Bereavement Support Line, bereaved. ie which is home to practical information and resources on grief and coordinating the Irish Childhood Bereavement Network. “This has been a very difficult time for families and friends of people who have died," IHF CEO, Sharon Foley said. "They may have been COVID-19 related deaths or deaths from other causes. We also know many are finding a previous loss more difficult right now. We want to pause and remember those who have sadly died and also show our support for those grieving. Grief is difficult all year
round but this Christmas it will be particularly hard. Through 'Never Forgotten' we want to open up a space to remember while at the same time giving people an opportunity to make a real difference to those facing the end of their lives and the many people all over Ireland preparing for the festive season without that special person.” "Show Your Support The Never Forgotten Appeal" by updating your Facebook profile picture with a picture of someone you have loved and lost, using the specially designed IHF #NeverForgotten frame. The appeals runs right up to the end of December. Encourage others to take part and donate by using the #NeverForgotten and tagging @irishhospice. St Paul’s Basketball syndicate deadline This Tuesday (December 1) is the deadline to enter St Paul’s Basketball Club’s ‘Mega Euromillions Grand Syndicate’. Punters can pledge a one-off payment of €50 which will be used by the club to buy tickets for the two weekly Euromillions Lotto draws. Each pledge of €50 offers 500 chances to win over a 50 week period. Winnings are pooled and will be divided equally between each syndicate member at the end of the year. From a fundraising point of view, St Paul’s need a minimum of 50 subscribers to
break-even and each €50 pledged after that will go towards funding the club’s activities in 2022. If 500 people sign-up, the club could make in excess of €500,000 but the size of the winning pool reduces. Even if half that amount of people sign up, the club could net over €300,000 after all winnings are redistributed to subscribers. “It would make a great Christmas present for someone,” Chairman Padraig Weldon told the Killarney Advertiser. “Just make the booking in the recipients’ name.” Tickets can be purchased via www.stpaulskillarney.ie/shop.
At the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education, Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, a draft order was set for January 1, 2021 as the appointed day for the establishment of Munster Technological University. The order will be formally approved by resolution of each House of the Oireachtas before the end of the month. “The establishment of what is only the second technological university in the State, and the first outside the capital,
is another important milestone for education in Ireland in the South West and most especially in County Kerry,” Minister Foley said. “The presence of a technological university in Kerry will have a transformative effect on the communities it serves and will bring greater social and economic benefits to this county and region through a strengthened role in research and innovation and the delivery of a broad range of high quality education and training. “IT Tralee and CIT merging as the MTU will be particularly significant also in terms of international recognition, FDI attraction, skills retention and creation and socio-economic progression. It is a hugely positive step forward for County Kerry.”

GOLD AWARD: Celebrating Gold Membership in the Origin Green Sustainability Programme are Gearoid Linnane (CEO, Lee Strand) with back l to r: James Sugrue (Plant Manager), Deirdre Foley (Farm Advisor), Maurice O’Connor (Production Manager), and Ciara Herlihy (Assistant Technical Manager).
Bord Bia awards Lee Strand with Gold Membership Lee Strand was recognised for their exceptional performance and commitment to sustainability with Gold Membership at the virtual Origin Green 2020 awards on Thursday, November 19. The online event was addressed by Charlie McConalogue, TD, Minister for Agriculture, Food & Marine and recognised 26 companies in the food and beverage sector in Ireland who have achieved the highest level of membership in the Origin Green Sustainability Programme. “We are delighted in Lee Strand to be recognised with the prestigious Origin Green Gold Membership for our commit-
ment to sustainability," Gearoid Linnane, CEO said. "In Lee Strand, environmental management and sustainability are key elements of our business model, from launching 100% renewable cartons, to reducing water usage and energy efficiency. This is a great achievement by our sustainability team who are continually striving for higher levels of environmental excel-
lence. We would also like to thank Veronica Kennelly from the Institute of Technology Tralee who assisted Lee Strand in the development of our Origin Green plan.” Origin Green continues to evolve to ensure Bord Bia is helping Irish food and drink companies to remain up to date with the evolving needs of trade customers and their consumers, globally. With the introduction of the Origin Green credits system in early 2020, it is now easier to identify members who are performing at a high level or excelling in their sustainability performance. To retain ongoing membership of Origin
Green, companies must subsequently submit an annual review to demonstrate clear progress against the established targets and initiatives set. This annual review is subject to an independent third-party review by their verification authority Mabbett. This ensures minimum programme requirements are consistently met and maintained. Origin Green Gold Membership is awarded to companies who demonstrate an exceptional annual performance on their sustainability targets and is based on the assessment of an independent verification authority. Companies receive credits for their performance in areas such as raw material sourcing; water and energy efficiency; waste reduction; packaging; and social sustainability. Origin Green has established five different membership tiers based on company size and turnover, so that a real diversity of industry is reflected in the overall Gold membership.
Funding available to support businesses The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) has said that COVID-19 funding is available to Munster businesses to cover the cost of developing a business continuity plan; to start to trade online and to prepare for the future through adopting digital technology; and it is calling on SMEs to check their eligibility and seek support. Funding that is available to support SMEs include; Trading Online Vouchers for those with up to 10 employees, the Online Retail Scheme and SME Digital Hub Connectivity Support, set to open in 2021. Funding is also available for
business continuity planning, effectively covering the cost of businesses identifying their own pathways to future business success. ACCA has also welcomed the Government’s new Inter-Departmental Group on remote working which it says will be crucial to Munster’s regional economy. The Group’s report, which was referred to in the budget is expected to be published in early 2021. With almost 3,000 ACCA members and 3,000 ACCA students located throughout Munster, the professional accountancy body has a strong footprint in the province, and it has said that a joined-up approach between business and Gov-
ernment is key to sustaining jobs and supporting long-term resilience and sustainability. “It is imperative that the Budget and other support schemes are fully implemented and delivered upon in order to support regional SMEs to adapt and survive in the coming weeks,” Peter Ring, Chair of ACCA Munster Panel, said. “With a €13m digital support package and €2,500 in trading vouchers designated for businesses between now and 2021, it is crucial that regional SMEs engage with funding bodies urgently to ensure timely allocation of monies to support business sustainability. As enforced COVID restrictions continue to pose ma-
jor challenges for Munster’s businesses and the sustainability of livelihoods, digital transformation can support regional SMEs to move services and products online in the immediate future.” ACCA are advising businesses in Munster to take the following steps as a matter of priority: Check for eligibility of the Trading Online Voucher scheme which is designed to assist small businesses with up to 10 employees to trade more online, boost sales and reach new markets, and to engage with Enterprise Ireland on dates for the opening of the Online Retail Scheme and Digital Hubconnectivity programme.

HEALTH & FITNESS Kerry businesses Advice - By Angela Kerrisk Angela is available for advice and nutrition consultations, on nutrition@activate.ie. • www.activate.ie
Snack smart to keep your nutrition in focus It’s coming into the season where daily patterns seem to lose their sharper edges and the fuzzy lines between routine and chaos intrude on our lives. Taking control of one small aspect in relation to your nutrition can have a huge impact on ensuring you keep your health and nutrition in focus during a busy Christmas period. The term “snack foods” is often used to refer to processed, high-calorie items like crisps and cookies. To be defined as a snack, it generally has 200/250 calories or less per serving, anything more is considered a meal. There are mixed opinions about snacking, some believe that it’s healthy, while others think it can harm you and make you gain weight. However, snacking simply means to eat or drink something between meals, regardless of whether the food is healthy. There are several reasons why we snack – boredom is one of the most common reasons for unconscious snacking but factors like location, social environment, habit association i.e. at the cinema, time of day and food availability contribute as well. In general, it’s best to eat snacks that provide about 200 calories and at least 10 grams of protein to help you stay full until your next meal. Think ahead and plan to have a healthy snack handy – preferably, one you really like – choosing nourishing whole foods is best, be sure
to have a mix of good carbs, healthy fats and protein to help keep your body and mind energised.
DON'T SKIP MEALS
Skipping meals just makes you so hungry that you’re vulnerable to overeating later in the day. For breakfast, lunch, and dinner do your best to create well-balanced meals. Dehydration can also present itself as hunger, so before you snack, ask yourself, “am I truly hungry?” Have a glass of water first, you may find that after a drink you aren’t feeling as hungry anymore. Snacking may not be good for everyone, but it can definitely help some people avoid becoming ravenously hungry, which sometimes leads to overeating later on in the day. Your number of snacks varies based on your activity level and meal size. If you’re very active, you may prefer two snacks per day, while a more sedentary person may do best with one or no snacks. In the end, it really is a personal choice – but the quality of snacks are important so make sure to choose healthy foods that keep you full and satisfied.

should apply for new Brexit loan - Griffin Small businesses in Kerry should apply for a new loan to help them prepare for Britain’s exit from the single market and customs union at the end of this year, Deputy Government Chief Whip, Brendan Griffin TD has said. “I know that Brexit will be challenging for businesses and they want to be prepared, so I welcome the opening of this new scheme by the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Leo Varadkar TD," Deputy Griffin said. “The new Microfinance Ireland (MFI) Brexit Business Loan, will provide up to €25,000 to businesses whose turnover already is or is likely to fall 15% or more or if the business has a short term cashflow need as a result of Brexit. Loans are available for between six months and three years. Any business, including a Sole Trader, Partnership or Limited Company, with less than 10 employees and annual turnover of up to €2 million can apply, where they are unable to se-
cure finance from a Bank or commercial lending provider." Kerry businesses can apply though their Local Enterprise Office Network or can apply directly to Microfinance Ireland (MFI). “There are less than 50 days until the end of the transition period on December 31. It is urgent that all businesses large and small in Kerry now revisit their readiness plans. From January 1, the UK will no longer apply the rules of the EU’s Single Market and Customs Union. This means that any business that moves goods from, to or through Great Britain will be subject to a range of customs formalities, SPS checks and other regulatory requirements that do not apply to such trade today. There is now an extensive range of training material and information available online on the Government’s new Brexit Information Hub to help businesses prepare for Brexit and the lasting change that it will bring. The hub can be accessed via Gov.ie/getbrexitready."

back on the air. The hugely popular Christmas themed radio station will resume its annual broadcast at 12pm to help lift the spirits of the entire nation. Christmas FM’s charity partner this year is ALONE, and the radio station is aiming to raise over €200,000 to enable the charity to provide over 20,000 hours of vital support to older people in Ireland to help them to live happily and
independently in their own homes and communities. Christmas FM will be celebrating its 13th year on air this year and, since it began broadcasting, has raised almost €2.5 million for a range of charities. The costs of running Christmas FM are covered by various sponsors, ensuring that all on-air fundraising and donations will go directly to ALONE. Cadbury, Coca Cola and An Post are premier FM sponsors for 2020 and the radio station will broadcast from the Ballsbridge Hotel, Dublin, who have kindly given the studio space for free. Christmas FM is also available online at www.christmasfm.com.
Lennon was 40 when he was shot dead by Mark David Chapman outside the Dakota Building on December 8, 1980. Hours earlier he was pictured signing the album for his then unknown killer. Lennon returned to the Dakota several hours later, Chapman shot him twice in the back and twice in the shoulder as he entered the studio building. As the 40th anniversary of his death is approaching, fans are now been given the opportunity to own the unusual piece of memorabilia, which also has various markings left by police as it was used as evidence at the time, as well as Lennon's signature written with '1980' on Yoko Ono's neck. Chapman, who was recently denied parole for the 11th time, apologised to Yoko Ono in his latest parole hearing and admitted that he killed Lennon for 'glory'.
Advertiser's Trump column under fire It seems not everyone agrees with our Trump Watch segment with one reader going as far saying that: “The person writing the Trump segment in the weekly Killarney Advertiser should be fired”. One letter we received in the last week took offence to our column when it we reported that President Trump is the first US president in years not to go war. In fairness, Trump deserves credit for that and he is even honouring a pre-2016 election promise and is withdrawing US troops from Afghan-
istan and other areas of noted US conflict. The writer was also upset that the Killarney Advertiser did not acknowledge the voter fraud (allegations) in the most recent election. “I've been following the Trump Administration and he has done so much good for America, I wish we had someone like him in Irish Government,” the letter said. “And the piece opens with (paraphrasing) regardless of your political stance you must accept that Trump's reign is ending. I was expecting you would
at least mansion [SIC] the developments of voting irregularity, but no.” Trump’s favoured method of communicating with the masses is via Twitter and the social media giant adds a caveat to the majority of his Tweets saying: “The claim about election fraud is disputed,” and “Multiple sources have called this election differently”. The Killarney Advertiser is considering following Twitter's lead on this. And regardless of your political stance, Trump’s reign is coming to an end.

The perfect Christmas stocking filler, ‘Songs of Kerry and Others’ has been compiled by well-known Dingle man Thomas O’Callaghan and was the brainchild of Bryan Lee from Tralee, a legend in music circles in Kerry for many years. Featuring 14 beautiful Irish ballads, the CD, as the name suggests, has a very strong Kerry theme, with songs like ‘Dingle Bay, ‘Brosna Town’, ‘The Rose of Tralee’, ‘The Kingdom of Kerry’, and ‘The Boys of Barr na Stáide’ all included. The CD was produced by Martin O’Malley and Steve Flaherty and recorded at Martin’s Malbay Studios in Milltown Malbay. Other artists to feature include James Barry, James Fennessy, Anne Rynne, Dave Saunders, Tom Lynch and Elaine Hogan. Thomas O’Callaghan explained that choosing Recovery Haven Kerry as the benefiting charity was a family decision, and one he knows his late parents Michael and Mary would be very happy with.
CD LAUNCH: Thomas O'Callaghan pictured with Recovery Haven Kerry staff and volunteers, Philomena Stack, Maureen O'Brien, Siobhan MacSweeney (manager) and Dermot Crowley.
“Our family felt this was a worthy cause to support and we know both of our late parents would be very pleased that the proceeds of the CD are going to such a worthy cause.” This is Thomas’ third CD, having already raised thousands of Euro for the RNLI in Clare and Kerry, as well as Dingle Coast and Cliff Rescue through his previous CDs, ‘Dingle Bay’ and ‘Take Two’. The CD, priced at €10, is now available from Recovery Haven Kerry, 5 Haig’s Terrace Tralee or online via Recovery Haven’s Facebook page shop. Volunteers will also be selling the CD at Recovery Haven on Monday, November 30 and Tuesday, December 1 from 11am - 1pm.
Irish racing stars to raise funds for Children’s Health Foundation Kerry projects win at Inspired by their visit to CHI at Crumlin last Christmas, stars of Irish racing have decided to continue their fundraising efforts this year in memory of their weightroom colleague Pat Smullen. All funds raised will go to Children’s Health Foundation Crumlin to purchase a spinal cell saver auto transfusion device for the children’s hospital. Over the next few weeks, jockeys and racing personalities will put the call out on social media, asking racing and sports fans for donations towards the essential blood transfusion equipment. In addition, a host of Irish racecourses around the country will name a race to promote the fundraising initiative - 'Irish Racing Industry Fundraiser for Children’s Health Foundation Crumlin in memory of Pat Smullen'.
John Butler, Jockeys’ Sports Physiotherapist and Paul Quish, Racecourse Announcer, who spearheaded the campaign in 2019, both agreed: “Despite the COVID-19 restrictions, everyone in racing is more determined than ever to continue the much-needed fundraising for Children’s Health Foundation Crumlin. Our former colleague Pat Smullen was inspirational in his support for our project last year and we have dedicated this year's effort to his memory. We are all focused on raising the funds to buy the spinal cell saver auto transfusion, an essential piece of equipment that CHI at Crumlin specifically identified to provide children all over Ireland with life-changing treatment. Any donations, big or small will be really appreciated.” Donations can be made via www.justgiving.com/fundraising/Irish-Racing-Industry-CMRF-fundraiser.

support local this Christmas Let’s not sugar coat it, 2020 has been terrible year for business. Two nationwide lockdowns and a complete wipe-out of the tourism trade has left many local businesses fighting to survive. The impact has been immeasurable, and we were all sad to learn that several local businesses were not reopening after the first lockdown. As the headline implies, the more money we can spend locally the better chance we have of keeping our retailer’s doors open going into 2021. We are pleading with Christmas shoppers to support local retailers this Christmas, in hope that no more businesses will have to permanently shut-shop as a result of COVID-19. Many shops aren’t even open yet and the Government has already hinted at a tightening of restrictions after the festive season. With this in mind, it’s so important we take this opportunity to get behind local retailers and ensure they have a good winter's trading.
Here are three reasons to support local this Christmas: •W hen you spend with your local retailer, you're keeping money in Killarney. •T his additional money allows local businesses to keep their doors open and our family and friends employed. •O ur local businesses are important to the town not just because of the products they sell. They often provide a social outlet for our elderly and are generous when contributing to local charities, sponsoring our local sports clubs, and funding initiatives such as Christmas in Killarney. We have been talking to business owners the past few weeks and the general consensus is that they accept people will do a fair share of their shopping online this Christmas, but hopefully, by incentivising shoppers with some fantastic prizes people will consider setting a bit of money aside to support local.
Here are some of the prizes up for grabs in The Killarney Advertiser's #BigChristmasGiveaway

Debut of Hickey’s self-built BMW M3 delayed This weekend the town of Killarney should have been awash with the sound of rally cars. The annual Rentokil-Initial Killarney Historic Rally was set to take place tomorrow (Saturday) but, like everything else, it is well-known what got in the way. Despite the rally’s cancellation, one local driver was more than ready for the event. Headford’s John Hickey, equally renowned as a rally driver and an engineer, built a BMW M3 E30 for the event. He undertook the project at his workshop, “half way up the Paps Mountain”. Hickey is one of the longest his serving members of Killarney and District Motor Club and comes from a family steeped in the local history of the sport. His brother Charlie and nephew Johnny are both accomplished competitors and his daughter Michelle made her debut last year. Another brother, Liam, is often found with spanners in hand fettling rally
cars on local events. The BMW M3 E30 is one of the most popular rally cars amongst fans, the late 1980s and early '90s of the Rally of the Lakes were dominated by BMW drivers like Bertie Fisher and Austin MacHale, while in recent years local drivers like Alan Ring and Kevin O’Donoghue have campaigned versions of the car to much success. “It is a lockdown project. It is going to be a works specification M3, the ultimate spec, built in Kerry to be rallied in Kerry,” he explained. His plan, along with his loyal mechanic Ian Creedon, was to have the new car built for tomorrow’s event and while he met his self-imposed deadline, he had nowhere to go. “I had it ready just in time for the Historic Rally. Unfortunately she will have to wait for her debut, please God early next year, for the West Cork Rally or the Circuit of Kerry Rally.”
READY FOR ROAD: Well-known local rally driver and engineer John Hickey with his mechanic Ian Creedon. Hickey was hoping to give his newly built BMW M3 E30 it's debut on this weekend’s Rentokil-Intial Killarney Historic before the event got cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Ahern’s BMW in Castleisland is already preparing for the arrival of one of the most exciting new cars set to be launched in the Irish market. A year before its market launch at the end of 2021, BMW in Germany is providing a first look ahead to the future BMW iX, which is currently still in the series development phase. Conceived from the outset for purely electric mobility, the iX will redefine the successful Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) concept. With its completely newly developed, precise and minimalist design, the BMW iX is the first representative of a trailblazing generation of cars poised to redefine the driving experience, the feeling of interior space and the relationship between a vehicle and those on board. “We are very excited about the first BMW iNext. It is a major milestone in electrification and technology for BMW and we look forward to seeing it on the Kerry roads late next summer,” Paul Ahern, Head of business at Aherns Castleisland, said. “We have a great line up now of BMW Hybrid and electric models here at Ahern’s now with a €5,000 SEAI grant and reduced VRT which will suit some of our low mileage customers and we also have some very fuel-efficient diesel and petrol models also which with our new 211 offers are very attractive for 2021.”

BMW future technology on its way to Kerry The BMW iX, the BMW Group’s new technology flagship, will go into production at BMW Plant Dingolfing from the second half of 2021. It brings together the company’s latest developments in the strategically important fields of Design, Automated Driving, Connectivity, Electrification and Services. Added to which, the vehicle concept and design of the
BMW iX are rooted in an all-embracing approach to sustainability. This is reflected in areas of the car such as its optimised aerodynamics, intelligent lightweight design and extensive use of natural and recycled materials, which help to create a cutting-edge sense of luxury and comprehensive feeling of well-being on board.
The battery can be charged from 10 to 80 percent of its full capacity in under 40 minutes. Added to which, within 10 minutes enough energy can be fed into the battery to increase the car’s range by more than 120kms. It takes less than eleven hours to charge the high-voltage battery from 0 to 100 percent at 11 kW from a wallbox.

The benefits of using serums
It will be great to get back pampering everyone again and I'm looking forward to reopening next Tuesday, December 1. It’s been a very productive lockdown for Level 5. I finally got around to finishing my website killarneytoningandbeauty. com where there's an option of online booking for your appointments and an online shop, check it out! I’ve managed to set an evening aside every week to do a mini-facial at home. When you cleanse, tone and exfoliate correctly, you can really feel the benefits of what your serums feel like on your skin. They are applied twice daily after toner and under moisturisers. It’s the vitamin cocktail for your skin and it’s the most active product you can apply to your face and décolleté. Serums help the skin in different ways to creams; they absorb quickly as they are a lighter texture (smaller molecules) then a moisturiser. They deliver the most potent, highly concentrated active ingredients, hydrating hyaluronic acid, and anti-oxidants, and Vitamin C. In the 20s and 30s think anti-ageing serum as a way to prevent wrinkles, brighten your complexion and even texture. In your
40s and 50s you need a vitamin packed, collagen boosting, antioxidant rich serum that can help wrinkles and fine lines, improve the skin's firmness and elasticity. Don’t despair, there's an anti-ageing serum designed for every skin type. As we don’t all age the same or have the same skin type, Sothys have eight different anti-ageing serums. Sothys Wrinkle Specific Serum: with its melting texture helps visibly fill existing wrinkles, the skin's surface and limits signs of ageing. Sothys Firming Specific Serum with its stretch affect gel texture, helps to limit skin slackening to tone, firm and visibly lift. Sothys Detoxifying Youth Serum visibly protects the skin against free radicals and optimises cell renewal. Sothys Redensifying Youth Serum regenerates and features a radiant complexion full of vitality while reducing signs of ageing. It can help the skin to fight against oxidative stress and signs of chronological ageing. Sothys Reconstructive Youth Serum is a gel balm texture which intensely nourishes the skin, bringing greater density and vitality. Sothys Perfect Shape neck serum texture instantly reshapes, redefines and protects the facial contours, jawline and neck, and smoothes the decolleté and firms the jaw line.
For more information or advice on choosing the correct serum for your specific skin type, call Jill on 064 6632966.

version of yourself in your personal statement
Personal statements are requested for lots of postgraduate programmes, some job applications and they are a central and usually the most challenging part of student applications to UCAS, the University and Colleges Admissions Service for colleges in the UK. In the case of UCAS, the statement gives you a chance to show the university or college you are applying for what kind of person you are and how suitable you are for the course. The deadline for completed applications is January 15 each year, but it is advisable to work on applications well in advance of that to ensure that you allow plenty of time to complete your personal statement and acquire your reference.
STAND OUT FROM THE CROWD
The UCAS personal statement is limited to 4,000 characters - not words - or 47 lines of text, so you need to write concisely and clearly to ensure that what you say stands out from the crowd. There are excellent guides and resources on www.ucas.com/undergraduate/ applying-university/writing-personal-statement.
USEFUL TIPS
Be enthusiastic and positive from the beginning and make sure your opening paragraph gets their attention. Make it personal – show them your qualities, skills, interests and strengths. Talk about your achievements and mention experiences you have that are linked to the areas of study. Mention any relevant work experience and/or volunteering you have taken part in and what you learned from it.
ALTERNATIVES
With restrictions since March it has been hard to get work experience so try some virtual alternatives – register for virtual open days and online lectures, read articles or books on the topic, listen to a podcast or take an online tutorial. Reflect on the experience and link it to the statement by explaining what you learned and found interesting.
Niamh Dwyer is a Guidance Counsellor in Scoil Phobail Sliabh Luachra, Rathmore, and Chairperson of the Kerry Branch of Guidance Counsellors. She is also a Career Consultant. For details see www.mycareerplan.ie.
SHOW INTEREST
Show your genuine interest and passion for this area of study by displaying some knowledge of the content of the course and career area. Look at the course descriptors and link your interest to them, Use language that is clear, avoid jargon and clichés and avoid being overly sentimental. Remember the same statement is submitted to each of the five colleges/ courses you are applying for so avoid being too specific to the college and focus on the areas of study.
BE CAREFUL
Draft a statement that contains everything you would want to say, then highlight what is essential for them to know. Edit carefully and then check your final draft several times. Have someone else look over it. The last thing you want is to present a glowing statement with spelling or grammar mistakes. Proper proofreading is essential.

Start small but start now As the Chinese proverb goes, “the best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second-best time is now”. You are likely looking back now, thinking of the opportunities missed in the market over the last few months and what could have been. Stop dwelling on the past, put steps in place so that history doesn’t repeat itself because if you don’t, an older, more wrinkled you will be cursing the present you for your inaction.
SO, WHERE DO I START?
Of course, it is not as easy as just throwing your money into the stock market and coming back in 20 years to collect your winnings, if it was, I’d be out of a job. The point I am trying to make is, good investing isn’t about who appears wealthiest or searching for the highest one-off return; it’s about earning solid returns that you can stick with for an extended period of time. In order to build a portfolio that you are willing to hold through the inevitable pits and troughs of various investment cycles; you will need to have an investment plan that suits you.
CLARITY AROUND YOUR INVESTMENT PLAN
Your plan, your needs, not anyone else’s. The more understanding you have around your own investment needs and goals, the higher the probability of you sticking with it through short term fluctuations as you will be able to focus on your underlying longerterm goal as opposed to the current volatility. Risk tolerance: To create an appropriate investment plan, you will need to firstly ascertain your own risk tolerance i.e. the level of risk you are willing to take. Overestimating this will have you jumping ship at the least opportune time, and underestimating this will likely leave you disappointed with your portfolio returns over time. Everyone is different so take some time to realistically analyse what range of losses you can comfortably be exposed to both physically and mentally. It is crucial that you don’t overlook the latter, just because you can physically survive a sig-
Michael O’Connor CFA is an investment consultant based in the Cayman Islands with a decade of experience within the financial industry.
nificant decline in your portfolio doesn’t guarantee that the mental anguish from watching your assets decline won’t spur you into unnecessary action, ultimately deviating from your original plan. Time Horizon: Figuring out your own time horizon is vital. The academics of the world will tell you that starting your investment portfolio when you are about five-years-old and only
touching it moments before your death is the most optimal way to build portfolio wealth. Of course, theoretically, through the magic of compounding, they are correct, but this approach isn’t exactly practical. It doesn’t lend itself very well to our ever-changing goals and needs. College, starting a family, buying a house, changing career, retirement, all these are financial milestones that will invariably adjust your financial situation, so be aware of your long-term financial plan but be mindful that these goals may need to be adjusted somewhat as your priorities change along the way.
DIVERSIFIED INVESTMENT PLAN
Creating a diversified investment plan that is conducive to you personally will ultimately put you in the position to achieve a much more attainable and probable wealth target. Given the choice, I know I would choose financial freedom in reality over unprecedented riches in my dreams, so for now, focus on the prior instead of wasting all your time daydreaming about the latter.
What to do if you have a motor accident
Being involved in a motor accident can be a traumatic and shocking experience. While vehicle damage can be repaired or replaced, the health and well-being of all passengers should be the priority. Here is some advice if you are in this unfortunate position. Stop the car as soon as possible, switch off the engine and turn your hazard lights on. Stay calm and try to assess any casualties in your vehicle first. Check the other vehicle’s passengers for injuries, make a note if there are
none. Do not move the injured. Call emergency services if necessary. Call the Gardaí before you move any vehicles. Get contact details for all vehicles in the accident. Take a photo of the registration number, motor insurance disc and drivers' licence. If a Garda attends the scene make sure you record his name and station. Take a note if there are any witnesses and record their names and contact details. Take photos of the area especially where the vehicles ended up and their position on the roadway. Take note of the weather conditions
and visibility, number and ages of passengers in all vehicles, the time of the accident, and number and nature of any injuries. Do not discuss liability at the scene of an accident. You are only obliged to discuss this with a Garda or your insurers. Road traffic act law is a complex area and liability is best left to your insurers to determine. If you are involved in an accident with a vehicle registered outside the State, report the accident to your insurers and also to the Motor Insurers Bureau of Ireland www.mibi.ie. The Motor Insurers Bureau of Ireland also look after incidents involving uninsured vehicles or unidentified vehicles.

Some interesting pension facts With the December 10 tax filing deadline fast approaching, here are some final pension facts to consider. Women are less prepared for retirement! The pension gap between men and women is widening, with the average pension pot accumulated by women being almost a third less than that of their male counterparts. Some possible reasons for this are career ‘breaks’ taken for parenting/ caring, a higher percentage of women in part-time work with no pension benefits and, the fact that average annual earnings remain lower for women than for men which leaves less disposable income for a meaningful contribution. This is all the more alarming given the fact that women will probably need more funds in retirement because they are likely to live longer! CSO figures released in July 2020 show the average life expectancy for Irish
women is 83.4 years, which is almost four years more than that for men. Therefore, it is essential that all employed women put a retirement plan in place and consult with a Financial Advisor if necessary.
PENSION POT
The average Irish worker will need a pension pot of over €300,000. As a general rule of thumb you should aim to save enough to provide a pension of at least half your current income in retirement. The CSO recently confirmed that the average full-time salary in Ireland is €49,000. To achieve a retirement income equal to half of that, one would need a fund of approx €300,000, as well as the full State pension of €12,912. Obviously higher earners will need to have a
bigger pot. For example, a 30-year-old earning €49,000, with no previous contributions, planning to retire at the age of 68, would need to contribute €530 per month to achieve a pension pot of about c. €300,000.
STATE PENSION
The future of the State Pension is uncertain. The PRSI payments we make go into the Social Insurance Fund which helps pay for Social Welfare benefits and State Pensions. There are currently five workers paying into this fund to support one retiree. It is predicted that in 30 years there will only be two workers per retiree, which will be unsustainable. Private pensions will have to fill the gap and current figures suggest that they are no where near the level required, which is worrying.
TAX EFFICIENT
Pensions are the most tax efficient way to save. One upshot of lockdown is that, with very little to spend money on, many people have been saving like never before. However, returns on deposit and regular savings accounts are liable to DIRT at 33% or Exit Tax at 41%. Many savers do not realise that by saving through a pension, the Government will refund up to 40% of contributions made. Why would you pay 40% of your income to the taxman if it could go directly to your pension pot and fund a decent retirement? Next week we will be discussing mortgages, so if you have any mortgage related question or have any financial queries please email them to killarney@ mcguireliston.ie, sales@killarneyadvertiser.ie, or call McGuire Liston on the numbers above.

A Dads Love is special, A gift beyond compare, You know the only meaning, When he no longer there. A special time, A special place, A special Dad, We can’t replace, With an aching heart, We whisper low We Miss you Dad And Love you so.
When we are sad and lonely, And everything goes wrong, We seem to hear you whisper, “Cheer Up and Carry On.” Each time we look at your pictures, You seem to smile and say, “Don’t cry, I’m only sleeping, We’ll meet again someday!”
MIRACLE PRAYER Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked You for many favours. This time I ask you this very special one (mention favour). Take it, dear Heart of Jesus and place it within Your own Heart where Your Father sees it. Then, in His merciful eyes it will become Your favour not mine. Amen. Say for three days, promise publication and favour will be granted.

In loving memory of Mary Theresa Moynihan, Edgware Middlesex and Shronedraugh, Headford Who died on the 27th November 2011. PRAYER FOR HEALING Heavenly Father, I call on you right now in a special way. It is through your power that I was created. Every breath I take every morning I wake, and every moment of every hour, I live under your power. Father, I ask you now to touch me with that same power. For of you created me from nothing, you can certainly recreate me.. Fill me with the healing power of your spirit. Cast out anything that should not be in me. Mend what is broken. Root out any unproductive cells. Open any blocked arteries and rebuild any damaged areas. Remove all inflammation and cleanse any infection. Let warmth of your healing love pass through my body to make new any unhealthy areas so that my body will function the way you created it to function. And Father, restore me to full health in mind and body so that I may serve you the rest of my life. I ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. With Thanks, M.J.K

And not with your head bowed low, Remember the love that once we shared, Miss me, but let me go. For this is a journey we must all take, And each must go alone. It’s all part of the master plan. HURLING COUNTY | By Adam Moynihan
• Kerry book Croker date with excellent victory over Carlow • Conway and co. to face Antrim in Joe McDonagh decider Kerry GAA fans could well be celebrating before 2020 is out and, in an unusual turn events that is perhaps typical of this strange, topsy-turvy year, it’s the county’s hurlers, not the footballers, who are on the brink of glory. Last Saturday, Kerry secured their spot in the Joe McDonagh Cup final by defeating Carlow in a cracking match in Tralee. Daniel Collins bagged 2-1 and star man Shane Conway added 0-8 (0-4 from play) for the hosts, who led by three points heading into the final quarter. Carlow fought back well, however, and it took two late points by Michael O’Leary to seal the a memorable 2-22 to 1-23 win. The result leaves The Kingdom top of the five-team pool on six points from four games, one clear of Antrim in second and three clear of Carlow in third. Antrim and Carlow will play their fourth and final group games this weekend against Meath and Westmeath respectively and although a tie for second is still possible, Antrim will advance re-
gardless as they defeated Carlow at the end of October. Kerry and Antrim are certainly no strangers to one another. In addition to their recent Joe McDonagh Cup meeting, which the Ulstermen won by seven points, the two sides also met in the National League Division 2A final on October 18. Antrim emerged victorious that day as well with three points to spare, so Kerry will have revenge on their minds on December 13. The B final will be played in Croke Park as a curtain-raiser to the All-Ireland senior hurling final. Under normal circumstances, Kerry’s top two finish would have also sent them through to the All-Ireland SHC preliminary quarter-finals, but the format of this year’s competitions had to be tweaked due to the abbreviated nature of the 2020 season. If Kerry go on to win the final, they will have a playoff match in 2021 against the lowest ranked team in Munster with the victors earning a spot in the Munster Championship proper.

SMALL TALK
ADAM MEETS KILLARNEY’S TOP SPORTS STARS & PERSONALITIES
BRENDAN MOLONEY Former Nottingham Forest, Bristol City and Northampton Town defender Brendan Moloney talks to Adam Moynihan about playing in England, coaching back home and the state of Kerry soccer GOOD TIMES: Beaufort native Brendan Moloney in action for Northampton Town. The former Killarney Athletic player won the League Two title with The Cobblers in 2016.
Hi Brendan. Thanks for speaking to me. No bother, Adam. How are you coping with the lockdown? It’s very frustrating, to be honest with you. But it’s affecting everyone and we have to be respectful of what’s going on. Hopefully if we live by the rules it won’t be too long before we come out the other side of it. You’re currently coaching the Kerry U17s and the Killarney Athletic seniors. Are you enjoying it? Yeah, I love it. I had no interest in coaching at the start of my career but that changed as I got older. When the injuries started coming, that kind of made the decision for me. What is it about coaching that appeals to you? I like putting a plan in place, working on it, and then seeing it come together on a matchday. When you work on something and then see it happen, you get a thrill. And I think you get a bug for it. What’s your long-term goal in terms of coaching? Long-term, I’d love to give it a go cross-channel, but obviously it’s not as easy as that. You need to prepare and learn as much as you can. Opportunities don’t knock too often. When you do get the chance, you have to be ready to take it. How would you rate the standard in Kerry at the moment, both underage and senior? Are there players who have what it takes to go pro? This is my first year with the Kerry U17s and there are some very good players. With regards to making it, it’s hard to tell. It takes a huge amount of dedication and discipline. You never know, hopefully in the next few years we’ll start to see players coming out of Kerry and going on to a professional set-up. They’re getting good coaching from a young age and they have great facilities in Tralee. At senior level, Celtic are way out in front. Ourselves, Castleisland and Listowel would be next and then there’s a big drop to the other teams. Last season the boys did so well to get to three finals, and that was down to their commitment. Celtic have had a core group for a number of years and they have added very good players from around the county, so realistically they expect to win everything domestically. Hopefully next season, if the commitment is there again from our lads, the gap won’t be as big as people think. And maybe there will be a league or a cup there for us in the next few years. What’s your happiest memory from your playing days? Definitely winning the League Two title with Northampton in 2015/16. We had a good group of lads, the banter was
73
great, everyone got on, and we won the league handy enough. It was just one of those years when we into games knowing we were going to win. You played under some very high-profile managers. Who was your favourite? Chris Wilder at Northampton. He was a brilliant manager. I can see why he has had so much success with his hometown club, Sheffield United. He used to get the best out of everyone, but he had that harsh streak about him as well. He had everyone’s respect and you just wanted to go out and do well for him. Who was the best player you ever played with? Wes Morgan. I played alongside him at Forest and he would just make you look good. An unbelievable defender. You just knew he was never going to have a bad game. Toughest opponent? I seem to recall a duel with Zlatan at one stage… Yeah, I was lucky enough to play against Man United in the League Cup that time with Northampton, so I could pick any of those players. They put out a strong team and Rooney and guys like that were playing. They were just on a completely different level. It was an unbelievable experience. Back in my Forest days, Scott Sinclair and Nathan Dyer (Swansea) were so direct and tricky. Very tough to play against. Any embarrassing moments? Did you have to do initiations at any of your clubs? Yeah, I used to hate doing them. It’s at every club you go to. Normally it was on the first away trip. You’d be down for dinner at six/half six and next thing you’d hear the glasses being tapped. It was awful. I used to even hate watching other people doing it! What was your go-to song? Ah, anything! I’d lash out Stand By Me or Wonderwall, anything you could get away with for 30 seconds. You’d try and pick a song that the boys would clap along to! They were just always terrible. Who’s the most famous person in your contacts? One name I saw there, and he is absolutely flying at the moment, is Dominic Calvert-Lewin. He was on loan with us for six months at Northampton. I haven’t spoken to him since, and he probably doesn’t even have the same number! Favourite restaurant for takeaway/ delivery? Kate Kearney’s. Favourite spot for a pint? Kate Kearney’s as well. Or if I go into Killarney, The Laurels. And last one… Which of your Killarney Athletic or Beaufort clubmates would you least like to get stuck in an elevator with? Any of them who are Liverpool fans!

Yellow sliotar is easy on the eyes Eamonn Fitzgerald speaks to local hurling enthusiast Michael Linehan about the new yellow ball Many say it is the greatest field game in the world and it is hard to go against that viewpoint when you are riveted to the TV this year, watching thrilling championship hurling games played behind closed doors in practically empty stadia. It may be somewhat of an exaggeration to claim that hurling is the greatest field game in the world, but I savour the thrills of the game that goes back to famed Cúchulainn. I believe that it is right up there with the best, and better than most other games. When it comes to the claim that it is the fastest game in the world few will quibble, and as for entertainment value, it supersedes its twin, Gaelic football. Football has suffered a lot in recent years with all the trialling of new rules, which amounts to tinkering for the most part. Team managers have had to adapt their strategies to take advantage of the new laws, such as the mark and many other subtleties. Possession is the mantra now; whatever happens, don’t keep the ball at all costs. Instead of route one, accurate, long kick-passing and high catching, the game has developed into several hand passes leading to incessant lateral possession and man on the shoulder to set up the attacks. It can be frustrating to watch for spectators. I am very conscious of the need for Gaelic football to develop and adapt. I don’t want to see it regress to what is euphemistically termed the good old days, with the crunching tackles that were unwarranted but accepted by turning a blind eye. Too often the hard man was glorified. There are some improvements in the modern game, but players need to be athletes first and have a programmed strength and conditioned body to get the best out of the new evolving game.
HELL’S KITCHEN
In contrast, hurling has not gone overboard with new developments. Thankfully, the days of Hell’s Kitchen, the term labelled for the Tipperary
full-back line in the 60s, is over. Then, a forward could only venture so far approaching the goal before the timber was used showing no mercy, for the most part. But look at all the stylists. A few readily spring to mind. Jimmy Doyle, Eddie Keher, Seánie McGrath, Patrick Horgan, Richie Hogan, who is only 5 foot 7 inches but so skilful, and of course Christy Ring. He combined brain with brawn, which made him ideally suited to the game of hurling. Ringy was special. The Wizard of Cloyne was born 100 years ago. I would love to have seen him in action. Dan Kelliher did. Muckross man Dan played with UCC against Ringy of Glen Rovers in the Cork SFC. Great to see Dan still actively supporting the promotion of hurling in this area. Dr Crokes winning the 2020 Kerry IHC gave him great satisfaction. I’m not forgetting the camogie stars. Brilliant players such as Gemma O’Connor, Angela Downey, Sarah Healy, Aoife Murray, Grace Walsh and, of course, Mary Geaney from Castleisland. She is my choice for Kerry’s best all round sports person, as outlined in these pages some months ago.
LIMERICK FOR LIAM
The modern hurling game still has some physicality, but it also has fluency and skill at its source. Who will win the MacCarthy Cup in a few weeks’ time? I’m not sure, with Galway, Kilkenny and Limerick showing up best. I go for Limerick. We have only been able to watch the hurlers on TV and it has been great, but have you noticed how well viewers and the players have adapted to the use of the new yellow sliotar? It is being used on a trial basis in the 2020 championship and depending on how it is received, the GAA will most likely introduce it to the club scene in 2021. I know that the GAA has conducted clinical research for a number of years to come up with a new type of sliotar. They have found that there are differ-

ences from the traditional white one with regard to optics, how far the players can puck it, uniformity and other factors. They have now produced the yellow sliotar. Back in 1972, the tennis ball was changed to yellow for optics. I spoke to local hurling enthusiast John Lenihan about the different sliotars being used and the new yellow model. He, along with others, continues to do so much to promote hurling in this area. “Yes, there are a lot of various sliotars around and like everything, some good and some not so good,” he said. “It appears that there were some inconsistencies in relation to weight and distance reached but the main reason why they are recommending these new yellow sliotars is that they will incorporate a microchip in its core and that it is scientifically proven that your eye will react faster to it. “For that reason, it should be easier to see the sliotar for all spectators and of course umpires against a background of white goalposts. This new sliotar has passed a series of rigorous tests and they have been working on it for a number of years. “A luminous ball is much easier to see, especially you would think in hurling, as there is much aerial play and the fact that the sliotar travels at such high speed. “My understanding is that, at the moment, this yellow sliotar is being introduced for intercounty games only and club teams will continue to use the white sliotars. If successful, you would imagine that it will become the norm.”
IMPROVED VISIBILITY
“To improve the visibility of yellow further, a shade of yellow referred to as fluorescent or ‘optic’ yellow can be used, which the GAA has adopted,” John continued. “This will make the ball more visible for television, which had moved from monochrome to colour coverage. But the GAA's decision has not been driven by television requirements. Unlike tennis, hurling is a much more aerial sport and the challenge is with the white ball not contrasting sufficiently with sky and surroundings, which is a problem for players, officials and supporters.” There are other considerations that the GAA has taken into account. They have designed a "stamp of approval" (by Avril Kennan), which manufacturers printed on their sliotars to indicate adherence to the regulations. The idea was that players and coaches would be able to ensure they were buying and using approved sliotars. It became clear that there was still significant variation between manufacturers on how sliotars performed. After consultation, the GAA decided that it needed a process that would allow them to have full traceability of a sliotar, as well as greater consistency in its design and playability, to protect the integrity of the game.

CHILD LABOUR
Full traceability would also allow the GAA to better ensure overseas child labour could not be used by any manufactures, a problem faced by all sports. I am delighted that the GAA is committed to a manufactured in Ireland policy, ever more important in this COVID-19 era, by passing the sweat shops in China, India and other such countries, where very poorly paid workers churn out sports goods (in this case) and other products especially in the rag trade. In recent weeks I wrote an article on the big challenges promoting hurling throughout Kerry and outlined the reasons where much of the county hurling gets priority. One factor may well be the cost compared to the promotion of football. Back to John Lenihan for an update. No better man, with his credentials in hurling and his everyday job at MoneySense. “The existing white solitary costs €5 approximately while the new yellow sliotar will cost around €10. Juveniles under 10 years of age currently use a variety of different sliotars, namely First Touch, Quick Touch and Smart Touch depending on their various age groups. All these balls are made with softer leather and are therefore a lot lighter to use. As they move on to U12, U14 and U15, they will use size 3 and size 4 sliotars. It is only when they play at U16 upwards that they play with the adult size 5 sliotar. “The cost of the juvenile sliotar is also approximately €5 each so I don't think clubs will be rushing out to buy the more expensive yellow ones. “Certainly, for training purposes anyway, it is more likely that clubs will continue to use the white sliotars.”
What about the other costs for hurlers? “The average cost of an adult hurley is €25. The cost of juvenile hurleys, depending on size, also varies from €10 for 22" up to €18 for 32". “The average cost of a hurling helmet is €80, but some county boards run a scheme through the schools which provides a hurley, helmet and sliotar for €50 all in, which is an excellent deal.”
YELLA
There are great hurling games to come and we will be grateful for what the Cork hurling fraternity will surely pronounce as the “yella” ball. It is very easy on the eyes and watch how those goalkeepers, in particular, will drive the puck-out out of sight. The yellow sliotar will travel far down well into the forwards, bypassing midfield to pick out a forward. A single stroke and a point, with just two players involved. How great custodians of the past like Dónal Óg, Davy and Brendan would love to puck out the new yellow ball. One caveat. Will we miss fierce contesting of that elusive ball among a half dozen players and that is always thrilling. No place for the faint-hearted. Get stuck in close, or risk injury by staying in the periphery. Skill takes over and we can savour the delights of Richie Power’s deft flicks. Come 2021 and hopefully a return to club hurling matches, spare a thought for the umpires (if you can plámás them from the terraces to ‘do the flag’ for the sake of Cúchulainn, the club and the parish). With no Hawk-Eye, maybe even short-sighted volunteers will welcome the yella ball. That is of course if the clubs can afford the new yoke with the microchip, with so many sliotars lost in games/training sessions

Versatile Milner a short-term option The Liverpool veteran is filling in for Trent Alexander-Arnold at right back Liverpool utility player James Milner could be a viable (and cheap) option ahead of Gameweek 10 as the former England international continues to deputise for injured full back Trent Alexander-Arnold. Normally a midfielder who lines out in defence represents poor value for money when it comes to FPL but Milner proved his attacking worth in last weekend’s 3-0 win over Leicester by laying on two assists from corner kicks. With a home match against Brighton next up for the defending champions, the ex-Aston Villa man could well find himself amongst the assists once again. At just £5.3m, the versatile midfielder is certainly worth considering.
MADDISON
According to The Scout, fit again James Maddison is another one to keep an eye on. “The midfielder can be found in just 2.3% of squads for Leicester City’s home meeting with Fulham. Maddison was limited to just one start in the first seven matches due to fitness issues, yet he still made his mark as a substitute. He produced a goal and assist against Manchester City and also supplied an assist versus Leeds United.
TRANSFER: At just £5.3m, Liverpool midfielder James Milner could plug a gap for FPL managers in Gameweek 10.
“Promisingly for Brendan Rodgers’ side, Maddison is now back to full fitness and has started both of the Foxes’ last two Gameweeks. The playmaker created six chances over those matches against Wolverhampton Wanderers and Liverpool, at least four more than any team-mate. “Fulham, meanwhile, visit King Power Stadium in poor defensive form. They have conceded 18 goals, 53 shots on target and 21 big chances – all those totals are among the worst two records in the league. Maddison can profit from those frailties and may even prove an outside

OPINION WEEKLY SPORT
Our sports editor ADAM MOYNIHAN shares his thoughts on the week's burning issues
Lopsided Leinster final leaves a sour taste
A Kerryman can’t express concerns about Dublin’s recent demolition of Meath without sounding bitter and jealous. And look, to some extent, I probably am both of those things.
I’d certainly be happier if Kerry were rampaging towards another All-Ireland instead of the Dubs, and if my team were still involved in the championship then I possibly wouldn’t feel so down about the whole situation. It runs deeper than that, though. The structure of the football championship requires a complete overhaul, and Saturday’s Leinster final was a case in point. You can’t stand by and watch a team win a competition for the 10th straight year and not yearn for change. Yes, Kerry have won eight-in-a-row twice, as any Dublin reader will be quick to point out, but two rights don’t make a wrong. Kerry and Cork’s stranglehold over Munster (118 out of 131 titles), Galway and Mayo’s stranglehold over Connacht (94 out of 123 titles) and Dublin’s stranglehold over Leinster (15 out of the last 16 titles) render the provincial championships unhealthy at best. At worst, they’re dying a death. Now, Sunday’s results obviously threw spanner in the works. We had tremen-
77
dous scenes as Tipp and Cavan ended their respective famines and no one could deny that these long-suffering counties deserved their day in the sun. It was wonderful to see. But in the case of the Munster Championship, two surprises in 85 years (also counting Clare in 1992) simply isn’t good enough. The same can be said for Leinster at the moment. Dublin’s opposition are lagging so far behind, they must be totally and utterly demoralised. Their concerns were expertly summed up this week in a heartfelt open letter penned by former Westmeath player John Connellan, who called on “county boards across the country, but more immediately in Leinster, to demand a fair allocation of centrally-administered GAA resources”. I’m not sure if that will happen, and even if it does it will take years, possibly decades, to bear fruit.
AWFUL
From a neutral’s perspective, one of the worst aspects of Dublin’s unfettered control over the eastern province is the frankly awful quality of entertainment it invariably produces. Sitting through last weekend’s final from start to finish was a tantamount to self-flagellation. If Dublin are going to win, fair enough. They’re an excellent team. But, Jesus, let us have a
contest. Some back and forth. A fight. Gaelic football at its absolute best is a slugfest. The best heavyweight bout you’ve ever seen. It’s unpredictable, it’s fair and it’s a spectacle. We saw the best of it in Cork and Armagh last Sunday. The issue with the current format is that it pits heavyweights against featherweights. There is no reason, other than geography, that Dublin, who have won 59 titles, should be in the same competition as Wicklow, who have none. There is no reason, other than geography, that Kerry, who have 81 titles, should be in the same competition as Waterford, who have one. And the geography point is redundant in this day and age. Provincial championships made sense a hundred years ago when the logistics of travelling half-way up the country were a lot different. No such concerns exist nowadays (COVID aside).
REFORM
The National League has been brilliant in recent years for a couple of reasons. Firstly, teams are grouped based on how good they are. Mismatches are rare. Secondly, there are matches week-in, weekout. It’s a recipe for excitement. Thankfully, it appears as though the GAA are now serious about reforming the structures of their senior intercounty
football competitions. 2021 is likely to be similar enough to this year’s format: we will have the league (possibly with a different set-up due to time restrictions), provincials and an All-Ireland series. It is believed that a backdoor system will be added to the mix and the All-Ireland finals will be brought forward to July. 2022 is when we could see real change. Two new split season proposals are on the table and they will be voted on in February. One would see an evening up (numerically, at least) of the provincial championships with the lowest ranked teams in Leinster and Ulster making up the numbers in Connacht and Munster, so that each pot would have eight teams. This is fairly pointless as far as I’m concerned. Yes, it will mean that every county will play the same amount of games to get out of their province, which is fair enough, but it will do nothing to tackle the ongoing problem of top-heavy competitions. The second option is far more interesting. This would see the provincial championships being staged in the spring as standalone competitions, with National League standings deciding which counties would enter the A and B championships. (I would have some reservations about the plan in its current format, which would allow the top five teams from Division 1, the top three from Division 2 and the Division 3 and 4 winners to enter the top tier, but hopefully the GAA see sense in this regard.) Linking the league to the championship is no-brainer as far as I’m concerned, as is shifting the lopsided provincial championships as far away as possible from the business end of the season.
