Editor’s View

Eve Kelliher takes a look at the news that’s been getting Killarney and Kerry talking

WHY IS NOTHING BEING DONE? YET another serious collision took place on the Lewis Road-Killarney bypass junction on Tuesday afternoon, with one person taken to University Hospital Kerry. This notorious accident blackspot was also the scene of a crash just three days previously – again with one person taken to hospital. Tuesday’s accident, a two-car crash, occurred soon after 2pm. Emergency services attended the scene, at the exit from Lewis Road to the bypass. Several fatal accidents have occurred at this lethal junction over the years, so why is nothing being done? Killarney Advertiser has spear-

headed a campaign for improved safety at this blackspot following which calls for action have been made on a national level. Our three-part series earlier this year highlighted the views of many locals and has shone a light on what is one of the most dangerous junctions in Ireland. Kerry County Council has repeatedly sought a solution from Transport Infrastructure Ireland, which is the only body that has the authority to change the junction. At a recent council meeting, Cllr Brendan Cronin called yet again on TII to offer a solution. “They said they would be back to us in late September or early

October. It is now the end of October and there is no sign of a solution,” Cllr Cronin told Killarney Advertiser. “This is a matter or urgency.” Kerry Sinn Féin TD Martin Ferris said: “The authorities need to act before we have another needless fatality, and more families are left grieving. I have written this week to the NRA calling on them to take action, it beggars belief that after all the calls by Gardaí and public representatives for action to be taken, that the issues have yet to be resolved. People’s lives are at stake and it simply isn’t good enough that incidents like this are seemingly ignored.”

Our Readers’ Feedback & Solutions “Time to put in traffic lights on the bypass at that junction! Ridiculous now...people chance pulling out and misjudging speeds of vehicles already on the bypass. Remove the traffic calming then as no longer needed.” “What about closing Lewis Road access to the bypass, is it really needed?” “That junction is deadly...I’ve personally witnessed two accidents as I’ve been driving along that road...one was as I was on my way to my driving test!” “Disgraceful road; should be closed until the powers that be come up with a solution.” “Make the junction left-turn only onto the bypass, put a barrier down the middle of the road and use the two roundabouts on either side, similar to road in Mallow by the railway station and fire brigade, thus a simple fix.” “It’s about driving skills not about the roads. People are taking too many risks.”

New Car Park Is ‘No Silver Bullet’ Solution District, Cllr Niall Kelleher, said it would provide much-needed capacity for car and bus parking in Killarney. Also welcoming the news was Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce president Paul O’Neill. “The issue of traffic and parking is the number-one concern for our members. We have worked, and continue to work closely with the Killarney Municipal District executive and councillors to find solutions,” he said. The Chamber recognises that land procurement is far from straightforward in Killarney, he added. “It is no easy task but the town is only getting busier and though we do not believe that this is the silver bullet to solve our traffic problems, it will certainly help,” he said.

“Cars coming and going on the bypass at 100km/h or more. It’s insane! Put a bloody 50km/h speed limit road signs!”

Facebook Reaction

WHILE the planned new car park/bus park at Rock Road is to be welcomed, to quote Killarney Chamber president Paul O’Neill, it’s “no silver bullet” solution. Kerry County Council will launch a Part VIII public consultation process in the coming weeks following a decision by councillors in the Killarney Municipal District to acquire a site for car and bus parking, between the Mercy Convent and Áirne Villa at Rock Road. The site measures 1.25 acres approximately and will provide additional parking capacity for the town. A new footpath for pedestrians on the convent side of Rock Road will also be provided to link the new car/bus park to the town centre. The cathaoirleach of the Killarney Municipal

“Is it not kind of a motorway? If they don’t do something about the two turnoffs there will be more lives lost; people are basically crossing a motorway, not over or under, straight through.” “Was nearly in an accident myself there 10 minutes after this. Just going out straight on the bypass and some man drove out in front of me from Lewis Road. Had to beep the horn at him. He stopped in the island in the middle of the road. He was lucky I wasn’t going too fast because of the oil on the road from this accident. Crazy stuff; he wasn’t watching and took a chance that could have been bad for both of us.”

THERE were celebrations in honour of Clodagh Teahan of The Europe Hotel & Resort yesterday after she won the Young Chef of the Year Ireland prize at the YesChef Awards 2017. Clodagh started working at the five-star Europe Hotel in 2014 as a commis student from IT Tralee as part of her Higher Education in Culinary Arts course from which she graduated in 2016. She now works in every section of the kitchen with passion and an exemplary attitude. Clodagh said: “Growing up, I was lucky enough to be brought up in a family that lives and breathes food. At a

young age, this is where I believe my passion for food stemmed from. As Julia Child once said, ‘Cooking is like love, it should be entered into with complete abandonment or none at all.’ “With this in mind I hope that through your meal experience my cooking will showcase this.” Europe Hotel executive chef Alex Nahke said: “Clodagh has worked tirelessly through busy times within the hotel in every aspect of our business; we are glad and delighted to have young chefs as passionate as Clodagh within our team.”

Swift Action Ensures Safety As Blaze Rapidly Brought Under Control

Words: Eve Kelliher

SUPER-SWIFT action by management and staff as well as rapid response by emergency services ensured the safety of all after a blaze broke out at a Killarney factory on Wednesday afternoon. Six units of the Killarney, Castleisland, Tralee and Killorglin fire service attended after a major fire occurred at a unit at the Tricel plant at Tiernaboul Industrial Estate. Gardaí were quick to seal off the road and ensure free access for emergency vehicles. All staff were evacuated from the building and no injuries have been reported. The fact that staff were so well drilled when it came to fire safety ensured Tricel’s emergency plan “worked like clockwork”, a spokeswoman told Killarney Advertiser. “The ESB cut power straight away so there were no electrical issues for the fire brigade,” she added. Smoke filled the sky and was visible from Killarney town centre, so serious was the blaze, but it was brought under control in under half an hour.

The fire was contained to one area and operations were suspended as fire personnel assessed the damage. Founded in 1973, Tricel was formerly known as Killarney Plastics. Owned and run by the Stack family, it has established operations in 12 countries and its distribution network services cover 50 countries worldwide.

Action Stations For Rhododendron Eradication Words: Eve Kelliher Pic: Valerie O’Sullivan Tim Cahalane, NPWS, Manager rhododendron eradication, Paul O’Neill, President, Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce, George Kelly, outgoing National President Men’s Shed, Johnny McGuire, Killarney Meitheal, and pharmacist Finbarr Kennelly.

POSTPONED from last Sunday, a fundraising walk will make its way through the Gap of Dunloe this Sunday, October 29, and all are welcome. It is being organised by two Glenflesk men who are set to exchange Carrantuohill for Mount Kilimanjaro in December. Pat Sheehan of the Loft Fitness Studio and his friend Niall Dennehy are training on Kerry’s hills and slopes and you can join them as they host Sunday’s 11km trek. It commences at 10am and forms part of the

duo’s efforts to generate cash for the Irish Kidney Association. Refreshments will be served at Lord Brandon’s Cottage and tickets, €25, include boat and bus transfer. “We are climbing Kilimanjaro on December 27, funded by ourselves, to raise funds for the Irish Kidney Association,” said Pat. There is limited availability for the Gap of Dunloe walk and tickets must be pre-booked; contact Pat on 087-6856930 or Theresa Looney on 0872059205.

IN RECENT weeks at two separate rescues have been undertaken to pluck walkers to safety after they got lost in rhododendron in Killarney National Park. Now the National Parks and Wildlife Service is teaming up with Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce and the Irish Men’s Sheds Association to help tackle the problem of invasive rhododendron. Not only will it help promote safety, this initiative also aims to protect a vital part of Ireland’s natural heritage. The civic and pioneering project, spearheaded by Killarney pharmacist Finbarr Kennelly, will see dozens of Men’s Shed members from across the country descend upon Killarney National Park. It will run from November 5-8. “Through the generosity of Killarney Cham-

ber and Killarney hoteliers, all those attending will be accommodated and fed for the duration of their stay in Killarney,” said Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce president Paul O’Neill. Killarney Advertiser has campaigned throughout the year for a solution to the rhododendron problem, as not only is it a scourge on our National Park, it also endangers locals and visitors alike. Less than a month after they rescued two walkers lost in rhododendron in Killarney National Park, Kerry Mountain Rescue Team and Killarney Water Rescue engaged in a lengthy night-time callout trawling a vast distance to bring three walkers to safety last Sunday week. The incident took place in exactly the same place as the September rescue, the Glena/Shehy area.

History Comes Full Circle In Killarney

“Mrs Herbert of Muckross” by John Butler Yeats.

Portrait On Way Back To Muckross House After 145 Years

Cormac and Noelle Casey and Patrick Rowe, KC Print, with the printing blocks from the Yeats Family Collection.

A COMMISSIONED portrait of “Mrs Herbert of Muckross” by John Butler Yeats is returning to her former home in Killarney, after being acquired by the State at auction. The Trustees of Muckross House noted the painting was of “historical significance” as they successfully bid for the oil painting at the Sotheby’s auction in September. The wallpaper depicted in the portrait still hangs in Muckross House, where Mrs Herbert, the wife of Major Henry Arthur Herbert, sat for the picture commissioned in 1872. John Butler Yeats was the father of William Butler Yeats, Lily Yeats, Elizabeth Corbett

A KEY part of the historically and culturally significant Yeats Family Collection has found its way to Killarney thanks to KC Print. It has been a case of from one family-owned printing company to another as KC Print, sister company of Killarney Advertiser, took delivery on Tuesday of a sought-after lot of printing blocks that went under the hammer at Sotheby’s, London, last month along with the rest of the collection. A century-old box landed at the Upper Lissivigeen offices, full to the brim with 30 printing blocks, including The Circus by Jack B Yeats, a metal-plate printing block on wood. The printing blocks cover a wide range of dates from 1919. They originated at a private family-owned business, Cuala Press, which was set up in 1908 by Elizabeth Yeats and her brother, the poet William Butler Yeats. Established almost a century later, KC Print is another young printing company so the printing blocks could not have found a better home. “It is wonderful to have these items back in Ireland and we are very proud of their retention in their home country,” said KC Print founder and managing di-

Artist John Butler Yeats.

“Lolly” Yeats and Jack B. Yeats. He is probably best known for his portrait of the young William Butler Yeats which is one of a number of his portraits of Irishmen and women in the Yeats museum in the National Gallery of Ireland.

rector Cormac Casey. KC Print’s financial controller Patrick Rowe said: “When I first heard about the auction of the Yeats family Collection I had a look through the online catalogue, more out of curiosity than anything else. I eventually came across Lot 200 (the collection of printing blocks from Jack B Yeats and Cuala Press) and we decided that KC Print would be the perfect home. After registering on the Sotheby’s site I was able to access live video and audio streaming of their London auction rooms. I had never bid in an auction before and so was slightly unnerved by the knowledge that each mouse-click represented dramatic increments! Fortunately the other bidder dropped out before I reached our upper-limit and the printing blocks were ours.” A keen historian, KC Print’s creative director Damien Switzer has already been busy curating the treasure trove which includes blocks by other artists as well as Jack B Yeats. Damien said: “Since their arrival I have discovered some of the pieces are blocks from other very accomplished artists…. to be revealed soon!”

Profile: Jack B Yeats THE youngest son of portraitist John Butler Yeats, Jack grew up in Sligo and London. A prolific illustrator, he produced countless illustrations, broadsides, bookplates, and prints, collaborating with the leading lights of the Celtic Literary Revival and producing illustrations for the Cuala Press, his sister Elizabeth’s publishing house, which was at the centre of the literary movement. By the 1920s, Yeats had also developed his uniquely colourful Expressionist style of painting. His literary works, acknowledged by James Joyce for their stream of consciousness style, include The Careless Flower, The Amaranthers, And To

You Also, and The Charmed Life. Yeats is also noted as the first Irish Olympic medallist following the creation of the Irish Free State. Uniquely, the 1924 Summer Olympics in Paris included an art competition, in which painters, sculptors, architects, composers, and writers submitted works with sports-related themes. His painting “The Liffey Swim” took the silver medal in the category of painting.

Cuala Press CUALA PRESS was set up in 1908 by Elizabeth Yeats and her brother, the poet William Butler Yeats. It played an important role in the Celtic Revival of the early 20th century.

THE Killarney Golf & Fishing Club president Breda Duggan, club captain Derry McCarthy and lady captain Sheila Crowley led tributes to golfing legend Paul McGinley when he arrived at the club yesterday evening. The club presented Paul with the award of honorary life membership during a function attended by many former club presidents and captains. “This award was offered to Paul in December 2014 by the then club president, Denis Cronin, just months after Paul, as team captain, had led his European Team to victory in the Ryder Cup at Gleneagles in Scotland,” said golf club PRO Victor Mulcahy. Denis had previously met with Paul on a number of occasions, including in January 1993 when Denis was the club captain. An exhibition/challenge match was arranged to mark the club’s centenary year. “Paul, who

was partnered by Philip Walton, defeated John McHenry and our own Eoghan O’Connell by 68 strokes to 71 strokes,” said Victor. “Denis was also present when Paul and Padraig Harrington famously defeated Tiger Woods and Davis Love 111 at Oakland Hills U.S.A. in the 2004 Ryder Cup.” Paul accepted honorary life membership in January 2015. Paul’s career includes three Ryder Cup successes in 2002, 2004 and in 2006, when the Ryder Cup was played at the K Club in Co Kildare. Paul has remained undefeated in his singles matches in the Ryder Cup and has also won nine tournaments worldwide. These include his winning partnership with Padraig Harrington in the World Cup of Golf when it was played at the Ocean Course Kiawah Island South Carolina U.S.A. in 1993. Padraig is also an “Honorary Life Member” of Killarney Golf and Fishing Club.

Drama LAST month 12 of the staff from the Killarney Plaza Hotel undertook a four-hour training course to learn CPR and AED use. The skills they learned have provided them with the ability to recognise someone who is in cardiac arrest and how to active the emergency chain of survival. The Irish Heart Foundation certified course was provided by the Heart of Killarney project in association with OC Safety Training. “For every minute someone isn’t breathing with no pulse they lose 10% chance of survival,” stated spokesman Damien Baker, Heart of Killarney. “By having these skills and using them before the ambulance arrives, they are giving people the best possible chances of survival.” The Killarney Plaza Hotel is a key sponsor for both the Heart of Killarney project and the Killarney Cardiac Response Unit. “We would like to thank Igor Van Reil and the staff and management of Killarney Plaza Hotel for their continued support,” said Leo O’Connor of the Killarney Cardiac Response Unit. Should anyone want to learn CPR or find out about local courses, email info@heartofkillarney.ie Meanwhile, the Heart of Killarney phone box AED project received a cheque for €2,000 at the recent Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle presentation night. Damien and Leo thanked the committee. “The phone box AED project is taking off across the country and we are currently working with many towns and villages across Ireland to help them get a phone box AED,” said Damien.

KWD Recycling Puts Schools In The Frame Luke and Abbie Murphy, Edel Lynch, project co-ordinator, Sean Murphy, director, KWD, Noel O’Reilly, director, KWD, Alison Butler and Finn Kennelly.

THE pupils at Fossa National School were keen to learn all about best practice in recycling when they launched KWD Recycling’s “Recycle Right” campaign on Friday. The team from KWD Recycling led a fun-filled workshop which proved to be a big hit with students. Recycle Right is an exciting new project and educational video aimed at primary schools. It follows on from the success of the “KWD Kids Recycling” programme in 2010. “This new drive is for third and fourth class primary school students in particular as it is in line with the school’s current

curriculum strand, A Sense of Place – Strand Environmental Awareness,” said Noel O’Reilly of KWD Recycling. “Its aim is to enable students and teachers to understand the role of recycling and how to dispose of their waste and recycling correctly and responsibly.” The KWD “Recycle Right” pack includes an 18-page booklet which contains fun facts and quizzes. “It is important to teach people about the latest recycling practices and where better to start than with the younger generation,” said Noel.

“There is no other initiative by any other company or government body like this anywhere in Ireland and KWD Recycling want to change that trend, and in turn educate the children of today for a better tomorrow.” KWD Recycling is also running a competition to build your own Kenny the KWD truck where the winning school will win an iPad and a field trip to the new state of the art recycling facility. You will find all the instructions on how to build Kenny the truck plus access to many more games and quizzes online at www.kwdkids.com

Exhibition

Art Exhibition This Sunday FOLLOWING on from her recent artist residency at the Cill Rialaig Artist Retreat in Ballinskelligs, Loophead-based artist Carmel T. Madigan plans to showcase her works in Killarney. No stranger to town, Carmel will display new works created at the retreat together with more recent works at her one-day exhibition event at The Brehon Hotel on Sunday, October 29. Carmel admits to being mesmerized by the exquisite views from Bolus Head on the remote Iveragh Peninsula last June, where the bounty of wild flowers, views of the Skelligs and narrow coastal roads provided sources

of inspiration and fresh imagination, which has infiltrated her new works. It was also a great opportunity to network with and get reviews from American and European artists who were also in residence at the centre at the time. On June 12, Carmel’s work was featured on RTÉ Nationwide, to a wide audience while over the summer months. Many of her artworks were shipped to diverse locations from Chicago to Ohio to Vancouver and Switzerland among many more local addresses. The exhibition runs in the banqueting suite of The Brehon Hotel on Sunday, October 29, from 11am to 7pm. All are welcome.

Why I Find Halloween Truly Scary

News Briefs ... Crime On Rise In Kerry THERE has been an increase in all categories of crime in Kerry it has been confirmed. According to figures released at the Joint Policing Committee meeting on Friday, there were rises in all categories of crime, including public order and criminal damage. The number of property crimes in the 12 months concluding on August 31 reached 847, a 15%

increase on the same period in 2016. There was a minor change in the number of instances of criminal damage and public order, up 1% to 1107. Crimes involving drugs or offensive weapons saw the biggest percentage increase, up 43% from the previous year. There was a 5% increase in crimes against the person, with 391 recorded up to August 31.

HALLOWEEN is around the corner and I couldn’t be less interested. Anyone who knows me knows that Halloween is my least favourite time of the year. I always thought that dressing up for one night of the year was pointless and quite frankly, a complete waste of money. What also bugs me, is the fact that girls go out for Halloween dressed provocatively and nobody dresses in “scary” costumes anymore. A heads-up for those who are afraid of clowns, like myself, this year’s hot favourite is the Pennywise costume from the “IT” movie. What disturbs me most of all about this time of the year, is the cruel treatment that the homeless and animals receive from people I can only use the word “scum” to describe. Last year, the pictures

that emerged from animal welfare groups and the stories that appeared on social media about the abuse the homeless received doesn’t even bear thinking about. The one part of Halloween that I do enjoy is the young children trick or treating, their excitement to show off their costumes is something I always look forward to. This year, my Halloween will be spent indoors watching “Hocus Pocus” with my pets and a nice big mug of tea!

Arrests

Increase In Arrests For Possession Of Drugs FIGURES from the recent Joint Policing Committee meeting confirmed the number of arrests for possession of drugs for sale or supply has increased 71% in the year to date. However, Gardaí in Kerry have stated the county does not have a drug epidemic. Gardaí made 72 arrests relating to possession of drugs for sale or supply up

to August 31, rising from 42 during the same period in 2016. There were 328 arrests for possession of drugs for personal use, representing a 43% increase on last year. The Chief Superintendent for Kerry, Tom Myers, said while there is significant growth in the number of drug-related arrests, the increase in Garda detection rates is responsible for the rise.

TRACKER MORTGAGE SCANDAL The issue of Tracker Mortgages has dominated the political agenda over the last week. The Minister for Finance has summonsed the major banks to ascertain what their plans are to deal with this issue. A Tracker Mortgage is one where the rate of interest is set at a fixed percentage or margin above a reference rate typically the European Central Bank (ECB) rate. For instance, if a Tracker Rate is set at 1.1% plus the ECB rate and the ECB rate of 0% then you will pay 1.1%. These rates significantly effected the profits that the lenders could make on mortgages. It has transpired that thousands of customers were wrongfully removed from Tracker Rates or refused the option of re-joining a Tracker Rate when other fixed term agreement ceased. The major banks have indicated that they are ascertaining the customers involved and that they will engage with them to rectify matters. It is in this context however that it is uncertain as to how the banks propose to deal with same arises. It has been suggested that the banks will issue a Redress and further will Compensate customers. Redress is a calculation comparing payments actually made to the

banks as opposed to what would have been paid if the correct Tracker Rate had been applied. This calculation will include how the mortgage banks would have changed if a tracker rate had been applied and how much interest had been paid. Compensation is proposed to be calculated as a percentage of total Redress based on the banks understanding of personal circumstances. This appears however to be capped at 12% of the Redress. There is further provision for payment of fees for independent professional advice. A significant issue arises in respect of the customer’s right to now avail of Tracker Rate and for same to be reinstated. The bank seem to suggest that this is based on current lending criteria. This will be a significant issue. There is uncertainty as to how any final scheme of Redress, Compensation and reinstatement will be implemented. Customers affected have the right to an appeal to an independent Appeals Panel at present and independent professional advice should be sought by all customers affected.

27.10.17 Review

By The Book ... Transition-year student Stephen Hynes shines a new light on a classic novel TORTILLA FLAT was first published in 1935 and it was one of the first of John Steinbeck’s books that really succeeded in America. It tells the story of Danny and his group of friends. They are paisanos, people of Spanish, Mexican and Caucasian descent, who live in Tortilla Flat, a district of the Californian town of Monterey. The group is a bit quirky and they live life on their own terms. None of them have permanent jobs and none of them want to, and all six live for free in Danny’s house. They have an easy-going lifestyle that consists mainly of helping local people, or looking for money to buy more wine. I enjoyed the book for many reasons. The friends get into all sorts of trouble around town, and the book is full of comedic moments like the story of the family of ten that is fed solely on

beans and tortillas However, Steinbeck balances this light-hearted humour with more serious emotional moments, such as the tragic story of a young Mexican army corporal and his ill infant son. The ending of the novel is also particularly poignant and Steinbeck makes the reader genuinely care about the six men’s fate. The novel is full of colourful characters – each with their own unique personalities, from the bright and logical pilon to Jesus Maria Corcoran, the humanitarian who always goes out of his way to help people. I also like that Steinbeck isn’t judgemental about he Paisanos and their lifestyle; in fact he celebrates it. They are happy, kind-hearted people who value friendship and honesty over material possessions and Steinbeck tells their story brilliantly.

A Weekly Round-Up Of News + Views From Kerry And Around

Bryan Dobson Surprised On His Last Six-One THERE was a surprise for Bryan Dobson on his final RTÉ News Six-One - a clip compilation to mark his 21 years with the programme. As the veteran broadcaster prepared to sign off for the last time ahead of his move to Morning Ireland on RTÉ Radio 1, he thought he was escaping from the studio without any fanfare. But it was not to be. Just as Dobson was expecting the bulletin to end, co-presenter Sharon Ní Bheoláin said: “And before we go, we have a significant milestone to mark on this programme”, leaving the man of the moment with a stunned look on his face. “Viewers will be aware at this stage that this is the last bulletin this man here beside me will be presenting,” Ní Bheoláin added. “On behalf of the Six-One team at the moment and Six-One teams going back decades - and I know that’s going to make you feel really old, Dobbo! - it falls

to me to say thank you. “You’ve been a rock to us. You’ve been our anchor, figuratively and literally. “I’m not going to look at you now because I know I’m going to get all teary! From my point of view you’ve been a great friend and a mentor, and I’m sure the whole country joins with me this evening in wishing you the very, very best.” Now, we mined the archives for ‘your best bits’, as they say in all the reality TV shows. There were too many to mention, too many to fit into a single package. But we did put together a flavour, if you like, of ‘Dobbo Through the Ages’.” After the compilation aired, Dobson said: “I’m completely taken by surprise. Firstly Sharon, thank you for your very kind words and wonderful working with you… and everybody who’s been on the programme now and over the years. “It’s been a blast, really has been fantastic.”

Keelin Shanley & Caitriona Perry The New Six One Presenters RTÉ NEWS unveiled Keelin Shanley and Caitriona Perry as the new presenters of the RTÉ Six One News from January 2018. Broadcaster Keelin, who currently presents News at One on RTÉ Radio 1 and Crimecall on RTÉ One, will be joined by RTÉ’s current Washington Correspondent Caitriona, as co-presenters on the flagship programme. Sharon Ní Bheoláin will now present the Nine O’Clock News on rotation with Eileen Dunne, and remain as a presenter of Leaders Questions. She will also be the new presenter of Crimecall on RTÉ One. Announcing the new ap-

pointments, Director of RTÉ News & Current Affairs Jon Williams said: “For over a decade, Bryan and Sharon have set the standard for TV News in Ireland and I couldn’t be more grateful and more excited as each embarks on new challenges for RTÉ News. “I’m thrilled that Keelin and Caitriona will bring their intellect, competitive drive, and focus on storytelling to RTÉ’s Six One News. In a news environment where we are bombarded by opinions and half-truths all day long, there’s no bigger challenge than to make sense of it all on Six One and no better new presenting team to do so.”

Trump Corner Cambridge Analytica Used Data From Facebook & Politico To Help Trump CAMBRIDGE ANALYTICA used its own database and voter information collected from Facebook and news publishers in its effort to help elect Donald Trump, despite a claim by a top campaign official who has downplayed the company’s role in the election, reports the Guardian. The data analysis company, which uses a massive database of consumer and demographic information to profile and target voters, has come under the scrutiny of congressional investigators who are examining the Trump campaign. This week, the group became the focus of a new controversy after the Daily Beast reported that the compa-

ny’s chief executive, Alexander Nix, had contacted Julian Assange last year. Nix allegedly asked the WikiLeaks founder whether he could assist in releasing thousands of emails that had gone missing on a private server that had been used by Hillary Clinton. Assange confirmed the contact but said the offer was rejected. The news prompted a top former campaign official, Michael Glassner, who was executive director of the Trump election campaign, to minimise the role Cambridge Analytica played in electing Trump, despite the fact that it paid Cambridge Analytica millions of dollars in fees. In a statement on Wednesday, Glassner said that the Trump campaign relied on voter data owned by the Republican National Committee to help elect the president.

Broadcaster and journalist Keelin Shanley has been the reporter and presenter with RTÉ’s flagship current affairs television programme Prime Time for over 10 years, and prior to that she also presented various other shows. Caitríona Perry joined RTÉ in 2007 and was appointed Washington Correspondent in late 2013. During her role as Washington Correspondent she has reported on major stories such as the Berkeley tragedy and the US Presidential election and Inauguration, and co-presented special RTÉ news US Election coverage from Washington DC.

Fats Domino: Rock And Roll Legend Dies Aged 89 ONE of the most influential rock and roll performers, Fats Domino has died aged 89. The American artist was best known for his songs Ain’t That A Shame and Blueberry Hill. The New Orleans singer sold more than 65 million records, outselling every 1950s rock and roll act except Elvis Presley. His million-selling debut single, The Fat Man, is credited by some as the first ever rock and roll record. An official from New Orleans coroner’s office confirmed the death, which was earlier announced by Domino’s daughter to a local television station. Fats Domino - whose real name was Antoine Domino Jr - was one of the first rhythm and blues artists to gain popularity with a white audience and his music was most prolific in the 1950s. Domino had 11 US top 10 hits and his music is credited as a key influence on artists during the 1960s and 70s. Elvis Presley referred to Fats

Domino as “the real king of rock n roll” and Paul McCartney reportedly wrote the Beatles song Lady Madonna in emulation of his style. In 1986 he was among the first inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but by his later life Domino would no longer leave his Louisiana hometown - not even to accept the award. New Orleans-born musician and actor Harry Connick Jr is among those who have paid tribute to Domino on Twitter, saying he had “helped pave the way for New Orleans piano players”.

In The News. . . Brexit Is ‘Single Stupidest Thing Any Country Has Ever Done,’ Besides Trump The €1.7 Million Motorway Crash Involving Italian Supercar WHEN it comes to super cars they don’t come much rarer than Pagani’s and even rarer is the company’s Zonda, which costs around €1.7 million. So you can expect the repair bill for this crash to be pretty stratospheric. The Pagani Zonda crashed on the A27 at Tangmere, West Sussex, on Saturday morning just after 7.30am, reports Donal Byrne on RTE.ie. It’s understood the car was one of a convoy travelling on the motorway when it hit a crash barrier. Pagani is a bespoke Italian maker which creates cars in very small numbers for a select clientele, many of them in Asia and the Middle East. The price of the car in the UK is about $1.5 million. The car is capable of speeds of up to 320 KPH. Sussex Police said the driver was not injured but the “one-off” Italian-made car was left with “significant damage”. The driver was not injured and police are trying to

establish how the crash happened and are appealing for witnesses. PC Peter De Silvo said: “We believe the Pagani was travelling in convey with some other super sports car from Worthing to Chichester but no other car was at scene upon police arrival. “Thankfully the driver of the Pagani was uninjured”. Zonda says the Pagani Zonda F was designed to reflect the shared philosophy between Horacio Pagani and world champion race driver Juan Manuel Fangio, which entails “a commitment to a mission, a vision and a goal without neglecting essential concepts such as lightness, safety, performance and inventiveness. “Their tight friendship, which was soon heading far beyond the simple desire for a Mercedes-Benz engine, reached its highest point in 2005 with the creation of the Zonda F supercar, with logo, design concept and name entirely dedicated to Fangio”.

Tragedy As Woman Dies After Being Hit By Train PART of the Dublin to Limerick rail line was closed after a woman died after being struck by a train on Thursday evening.

The incident happened on the rail line at Killonan, near Ballysimon, around 5.30pm, an Irish Rail spokesperson confirmed.

Storm Brian Lashes Kerry KERRY COUNTY COUNCIL urged caution last Friday and Saturday as Storm Brian battered Ireland. Two weather warnings were in place for the 36-hour storm, which came just days after Hurricane Ophelia. A status orange warning for wind was in place for Kerry with winds of 65-80kmh and gusts of 110-130kmh sweeping in. Meanwhile, a status yellow warning for rain was in place also.

THE billionaire media mogul and former mayor of New York, Michael Bloomberg, has said Brexit is the “single stupidest thing any country has ever done,” apart from the election of Donald Trump as US president. Mr Bloomberg argued that “it is really hard to understand why a country that was doing so well wanted to ruin it” with the Brexit vote, in a series of outspoken remarks made at a technology conference in Boston a fortnight ago, reports the Irish Times. At that event, Mr Bloomberg (75) also warned that some workers at the financial media company that bears his name were asking to leave the UK and US because they think the two countries no longer like immigrants and are no longer welcoming. The CEO was speaking in London on Tuesday to open a new European headquarters for Bloomberg

in the City. But his earlier remarks suggested he had regrets about making the investment decision because of the Brexit vote. “We are opening a brand new European headquarters in London - two big, expensive buildings. Would I have done it if I knew they were going to drop out? I’ve had some thoughts that maybe I wouldn’t have, but we are there, we are going to be very happy. “My former wife was a Brit, my daughters have British passports, so we love England - it’s the father of our country, I suppose. But what they are doing is not good and there is no easy way to get out of it because if they don’t pay a penalty, everyone else would drop out. So they can’t get as good of a deal as they had before.” He added: “I did say that I thought it was the single stupidest thing any country has ever done but then we Trumped it.”

Killarney Leads The Way at TripAdvisor Ireland Awards Opinion

Words: Eve Kelliher

PROOF if it were needed that Killarney is Ireland’s tourism capital was only reinforced recently as TripAdvisor Ireland revealed its top 25 hotels. No fewer than eight Kerry hotels, seven of which are in Killarney, feature in the gilded list. The Killarney Park Hotel ranks number four, while The Brehon features at number seven, the Dunloe eighth, The Lake Hotel at number eleven, the International Hotel at number fourteen, the Europe Hotel & Resort at number nineteen, the Killarney Royal Hotel at twenty-third and the Ballygarry House Hotel in Tralee at number twenty two. The list comes as a result of TripAdvisor users’ reviews over the past 12 months and Kerry’s towns, hotels, landmarks, beaches

and restaruants all dominate the website. Killarney is named as Ireland second best destination, ahead of Tralee in sixth, Dingle in eleventh and Kenmare in twelfth place according to the hugely popular American review site. But aside from that list, Kerry dominated most of Ireland categories, including lists of both Ireland’s best hotels and beaches. Meanwhile Muckross House and Gardens has been named Ireland’s seventh best landmark, and Kerry was also the dominant force in the site’s rundown of Ireland’s best fine-dining venues. In this regard, the Chart House restaurant in Dingle was named the third best venue of its kind in Ireland, with of Rozzer’s Restaurant in Aghadoe (seventh) and the Lime Tree in Kenmare (eighth).

“BIN IT!” is a key part of the Gum Litter Taskforce gum litter education campaign and will visit schools across the country. A nationwide schools’ campaign to educate and raise student awareness of littering has gotten underway with students from St Brendan’s College in Killarney participating in the Bin It! workshop. Bin It! features an actor-led workshop visiting secondary schools across the participating local authority areas. The workshop is geared towards first year students and explores littering and social responsibility. This is the 11th year the “Bin it!” campaign has toured Ireland and to date over 45,242 students have taken part, with 6,024 attending one of the 63 workshops that ran in 2016 alone. The overall aim of the Gum Litter Taskforce campaign has always been to exact a behaviour change amongst the proportion of the public that dispose of chewing gum incorrectly. The Bin It! tour has proven to be an extremely effective, fun and interactive means of getting the important GLT gum

disposal message to younger audiences. We’re seeing its effectiveness reflected not only in the attitudes and awareness research results but also in the increasing number of participants in the tour workshops. The workshop tour is supported by a website www.chewitbinit.com which includes games and quizzes for students, lesson plans, teachers’ notes, posters and activity cards to help integrate the theme of responsible litter disposal into the curriculum. The Gum Litter Taskforce (GLT) education campaign also includes outdoor poster, TV and online advertising which ran from May until August this year and an accompanying website www.gumlittertaskforce.ie. The 2017 “Bin it!” tour will visit 26 local authority areas over a sixweek period from until November 17. Paul Kelly, Chairman, Gum Litter Taskforce, Dublin

Killarney Looking Good Awards

Flesk Has Recipe For Success Words: Eve Kelliher Pics: Eamonn Keogh COMMUNITY spirit at its best was on display in the Killarney Plaza Hotel on Monday evening where The Flesk Restaurant took centre stage as overall winner of the annual Killarney Looking Good Awards. The Flesk Restaurant underwent extensive refurbishment and its picture-perfect façade is a real asset to Killarney’s streetscape so congratulations to Tom, Sheila and Brendan Rohan of the business. MC for the evening and Killarney Looking Good chairwoman Yvonne Quill noted that Killarney had jumped an impressive five points in this year’s National Tidy Towns Competition. Leading the tributes were guest of honour Minister Brendan Griffin, Killarney Municipal District Mayor Niall Kelleher and Killarney Advertiser editor Eve Kelliher.

From left, Killarney Looking Good/Killarney Tidy Towns chairperson Yvonne Quill, Brendan Griffin, Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport, Tom Rohan, Flesk Restaurant, overall winner, Eve Kelliher, Editor, Killarney Advertiser, and Billy Daly, Daly’s SuperValu. Back from left are Margaret Pigott, John Daly, Daly’s SuperValu, Eileen O’Donoghue, Killarney Municipal District Officer, Cllr Donal Grady, Kieran Healy, Killarney Advertiser, Kieran O’Halloran, Killarney Municipal District Engineer, Derek Daly, Daly’s SuperValu, Angela McAllen, Killarney Municipal District Manager, Sheila Rohan and Dolores Croke Daly.

Well Done, Team Killarney KILLARNEY ADVERTISER has been media sponsor of Killarney Looking Good since 2010 and it is an association we are very proud of. As a news magazine rooted firmly in the Killarney community this is something we find is a perfect fit. We would like to congratulate all the winners as well as everything involved in the awards, from the hardworking committee and volunteers to all the Killarney Municipal District staff. We were particularly delighted that Archdeacon Michael Murphy, also known as Fr Tidy Towns, was a special guest at the event. Fr Murphy has been an inspirational figure in the Tidy Towns movement for dec-

ades now. He has helped lead Sneem (1987), Kenmare (2000) and Killarney (2011) to clinch the top national prize. It’s a testament to community-spirited volunteers such as Fr Murphy and to people power that Killarney improves year on year in the SuperValu National Tidy Towns competition. Retaining our gold medal status in this year’s contest was a wonderful achievement. As the Killarney Looking Good PRO Johnny McGuire told us, the Tidy Towns judges were so wowed by what they saw that there is very little winter homework to be done. Well done, Team Killarney, and fellow Looking Good sponsors Daly’s SuperValu and the O’Donoghue Ring Hotel Group.

27.10.17 Netflix - Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers – Runnin’ Down A Dream

Read

The Bookworm

Reviewed: Fresh Complaint by Jeffrey Eugenides THE first-ever collection of short stories from Pulitzer Prize-winning author Jeffrey Eugenides presents characters in the midst of personal and national emergencies. Among the characters we meet are Kendall, a failed poet who, envious of other people’s wealth during the real estate bubble, becomes an embezzler; Prakrti, a high school student whose wish to escape the strictures

of her family leads to a drastic decision that upends the life of a middle-aged academic; and Mitchell, a lovelorn liberal arts graduate on a quest for enlightenment. His previous bestselling novels The Virgin Suicides, Middlesex and The Marriage Plot explored similar territory and Eugenides’ astutely observed short story collection is equally compelling.

On The Box

Following Tom Petty’s unexpected heart attack and subsequent death a day later at the start of October, the 2008 four hour documentary, Runnin’ down a dream, was trending on Netflix. It was created to celebrate the 30th anniversary of his life in rock ‘n’ roll, Tom Petty proposed to director Peter Bogdanovich, he make a definitive documentary covering the history of the band. The result is a comprehensive account of Petty’s significant rise in music from humble beginnings in Gainesville, Florida where his first band Mudcrutch developed the sound that would get the band signed to a record label albeit under the singer/songwriter’s name. With full access to Petty’s personal archives and interviews with Petty and members of his mostly loyal band, Bogdanovich combines live concert footage to give a candid understanding of Petty as a performer and a creative artist. Of special interest is footage of Petty and his band during their two-year stint as Bob Dylan’s

backing band, and Petty’s collaboration with the Traveling Wilburys that included Roy Orbison and George Harrison. If you are a fan, this movie is a fascinating insight into of one of the world’s greatest rock n’ roll bands.

Welcome

W

ITH a hurricane and a storm in one week we are still reeling, with some parts of the country only getting their power back this weekend. We escaped lightly; I lost one of my favourite trees but no one was hurt and we had power all the way through so I’ll count my blessings. Our thoughts go out to all those who were affected by Hurricane Ophelia. We are looking at living rooms this month, how to choose a sofa and curtains; there are so many choices now it can be a bit of a scary experience. Also we spoke to Ildanach Studio about adding “a touch of glass” to your living room or entrance. With such a huge trend for homemade bespoke pieces, these stained glass windows tick all the boxes. We all love our front cover picture this month; these beautiful curtains are available from Corcoran’s Furniture and Carpets, our other top picks are the beautiful corner unit from Hal-Lou Furnishings and my favourite – the Fama Astoria range available from Moriarty’s of Killorglin and Killarney Furniture and Carpets. Hopefully our weather was not a sign of what’s to come, even if it is, we hope you will be cuddling up on the perfect sofa, cozy and warm.

Take a Seat WHETHER you are looking for a place to sit and chat or a cosy spot to plop down and read a book, sofas are a staple in any lounge area. But with endless options at our fingertips, finding the perfect sofa can be overwhelming to say the least. Consider the following main points before choosing a sofa and your shopping experience will go from intimidating to exciting.

Moriarty's of Killorglin

COLOUR The colour you choose for your sofa is very important and can make or break your room. It can either match the rest of the dĂŠcor in its general lines or it can coordinate with certain key elements. It can also be the one piece that stands out without having to match anything. Once you decide if your sofa will be an accent or neutral colour, you'll need to decide if your sofa will be light or dark. Your floor colour has a big effect on choosing the right sofa colour. If you're considering a potential sofa sitting on your floor, will it float on a sea of dark wood floor or carpet or will it blend into it? Because a sofa is traditionally large and upholstered, and most fabric absorbs light, it can darken a room considerably. A trick I use when considering a new sofa colour is to find a sheet or blanket in a similar colour and drape it over the existing sofa. This gives you an idea of how the colour will look, and if the sofa will be too dark or too light for the room. Don't forget accent pillows and throws as the finishing touches when coordinating your new sofa with your room decor. These little pops of colour give your living room that pulled-together look.

Corco

Mylestone Interiors

SIZE Consider how large your room is, the height of the ceiling, and which other furnishings you want to incorporate in the room. Make sure the sofa’s length, depth, and height are in proportion to your room. Making up a template in cardboard or newspaper and putting it on the floor gives you a great idea of what space your sofa will take up and if there is enough space for ease of movement in the room, and for your other furniture.

Mylestone Interiors

TYPE The size and function of your room will dictate the type of sofa that best fits your space. Is this a small, formal area for conversation? Opt for a loveseat, settee, or sofa with more petite dimensions. Is this a large room where you gather to relax or watch a movie? Choose a deep sofa or corner sofa where you can tuck up your feet and snuggle in for the night.

Moriarty's of Killorglin

Corcoran's Furniture & Carpets

UPHOLSTERY Select a fabric that is in line with the function of the space. Determine if it is a high-use area. In a formal living room or master bedroom you can get away with a light cotton or linen upholstery, but in a high-use area with kids and pets, stick to a textile that is easy to clean. Removable covers are an option, or choose leather.

Home & Living - October 27, 2017

Window of Opportunity How to Pick the Perfect Curtains

COLOUR & FABRIC Fabric is an essential part of choosing curtains, since the material will dictate how well your curtains function and hold up over time. If they're too heavy, they may not fold crisply when drawn; too light and they may not fall well. Try holding fabrics up to a window, even in a fabric showroom. Pleat it like an accordion at the top and let it drape, if it starts to flare like a piece of crinoline, then it's not going to fall nicely on the window." Try and work with a big sample, at least two yards, since a smaller piece may not show the fabric's true drape. It may be worth buying a yard as if it’s a large area mistakes can be costly. Sunlight will fade fabrics over time. If the room gets a lot of light, it's smart to avoid bright colours, since they tend to fade faster, if you like to change your rooms often, you can be less concerned with fading. Neutral colours, are less likely to fade and more likely to blend into a room's decor. Linen, silk, faux silk, and velvet are best choices to use for window treatments since they tend to hang the best, Faux silk tends to be the most durable, and in a particularly sunny room, faux silk doesn't deteriorate as quickly as real silk. Some fabrics can help keep out the cold. Many hotels use suede, velvet, tapestry, or tweed since their weight helps block light and keep heat in. Still, nearly any fabric can be interlined—a piece of fabric slipped between the lining and the face fabric—can help prolong the life of the curtains. If silk is unlined, it will rot, lining and interlining are what give curtains their body and fullness.

LENGTH & WIDTH Before you take out the tape ve measure, decide how high abo ins the window you'd like the curta to begin. Keep in mind: Hanging will panels higher than the window room. give a sense of height to the Designers often hang curtains about six inches above the winlook, dow frame, but for a dramatic some go higher. For a more traditional look, with the the curtain slightly puddled on or floor, you'll want to add two a three inches to your length. For panel modern, crisp look, have the fall flush with the floor. your When measuring the width of to window, be sure to add four eight inches on both sides and re double the total number to ensu dealso will This ess. fulln curtain using. pend on what pleat you are

Women Muscle In On Weight Training

Jill Duggan of Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio on the original Universal clay wrap

Elite Universal Contour Body Wrap THE Elite Universal Contour Body Wrap is now enhanced and improved with the use of the Chrysalis machine, exclusive to Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio. We recently retrained on the most advance wrapping techniques to grantee the best results. Benefits include inch loss, skin tightening and anti-cellulite action. A client who had the treatment in August had this to say: Whilst standing, my therapist rubbed the mineral clay over my body to ensure I was able to soak up as much of the mineral properties as possible. The clay itself is from the Dead Sea and is very rich in vitamins and minerals that help moisturise dry skin, balance oily skin and even soothe conditions such as psoriasis. The next step was to get wrapped up and Jill set to work wrapping me up in the hot clay-soaked bandages that had been warmed up in a deep heated tray. The experience of being wrapped from ankle to neck was very surreal and not at all uncomfortable. Whilst ‘wrapping’ my dedicated therapist attached four electrical strips to my legs and stomach which would come in handy for the electrical toning programme later on... Jill built up the layers of bandages more tightly in problem areas”(the legs, bum and tum as always) – she even shaped me a bootylicious behind by lifting my butt cheeks with extra layers to give my derriere a bit of a boost. Before tucking me into my heated duvet, Jill attached electrical wires to the conducting points on the electrical straps that were wrapped around my stomach and legs. The current felt quite sharp to begin with but soon became so routine that I drifted into a deep sleep, snug-as-a-bug-in-a-rug and ready to shrink by doing nothing other than lying down. Bliss. My skin felt smooth, tight and firm and I felt much more body confident. The whole treatment was just under two hours and by the end of it I felt very relaxed. • For more information or to book an appointment call Jill on 064-6632966.

Dublin GAA launches new Subaru XV Crossover & Impreza

Get In Gear With All The Latest Motoring News

MOTORING

SUBARU, with the help of the Sam Maguire Cup and some Dublin hurlers and footballers, has launched the all-new Subaru XV Crossover and the all-new Impreza. The grand unveiling took place at Bull Island on Dollymount Strand in Dublin. Both vehicles are the first to be built on the new Subaru Global Platform. Dublin GAA senior footballers Paul Flynn and Eoghan O’Gara were joined by Dublin hurlers Eoghan O’Donnell and Niall McMorrow to launch the cars as part of

Subaru’s involvement as the official car partner to Dublin GAA. Both cars are built with all-wheel drive systems which are designed to deal with tough weather and road conditions. Subaru tells us that while maintaining a combination of the Boxer engine, as well as their symmetrical all-wheel drive system, the car apparently offers superior handling and stability. They also claim improved “hazard avoidance performance, more responsive steering, exceptionally low vibrations and driving comfort”.

Audi have released the 2018 A7

AFTER the successful launch earlier this year of the A8, Audi have unveiled its newest model – The 2018 Audi A7. Available to purchase from February 2018, the new A7 is the company’s luxury fourdoor coupe. The A7 takes its design language from the recent Audi A8 in being edgy and bold. The grille is wider and lower than that of the A8. The long, sloping roofline makes it distinguishable as an A7. The boot lid features the rear taillight the whole width of the car. Inside, the Audi is simplistic and filled with tech. The centre console is driver-orientated with the infotainment display pointing toward the pilot. The housing for the Audi logo on the steering wheel mimics that of the front grille. Audi have opted for a twin display to control the cars climate control, infotainment and, well, everything. The infotainment is controlled from the upper screen with the comfort, climate control and text options housed on the lower screen. As for the engines, the new Audi A7 will be available with 4 and 6 cylinder petrol and diesel engines. As standard, the engines will come with Audi’s new mild hybrid system, MHEV. With the V6 engines, a 48-volt electric motor to power the hybrid. A claimed 0.7l/100km is saved by using this technology.

Three new deacons ordained

Pics: Don MacMonagle THE Bishop of Kerry Ray Browne ordained Kilcummin man Thady O’Connor along with Denis Kelleher, Tralee, and Pat Coffey, Killorglin, to the permanent diaconate last Saturday. Family and friends gathered to celebrate

the momentous occasion in St John’s Church in Tralee at noon. This brings to five the number of deacons in Kerry, with the parishes of Kilcummin, Tralee and Killorglin welcoming the support following Saturday’ Mass. Bishop of Kerry Ray Browne imparts his blessing on from left, Denis Kelleher, Thady O’Connor and Patrick Coffey.

KERRY historian Donie O’Sullivan will give an illustrated lecture on the intriguing life and death of Brian Ó Ceallaigh in Killarney Library on Tuesday, November 7, at 7.30pm. The lecture is titled “Killarney’s Enigmatic Brian Ó Ceallaigh and an tOileánach” and it focuses on Ó Ceallaigh, who was born in present-day Killarney Heights Hotel and befriended Tomás Ó Criomhthain in 1917. He is chiefly credited with An

tOileánach’s literary legacy to Irish and world literature. Ó Criomhthain’s two early classics are dedicated to Ó Ceallaigh. This Kerry Archaeological and Historical Society Lecture will look at Ó Ceallaigh’s imprisonment in Germany during WW1 and how Sir Roger Casement secured his release. His later Dublin years, his mysterious exile into Europe and death in Croatia will be examined. Fáilte roimh cách.

Garden Magic Elephant toothpaste, cupcakes Debby Looney

Winter blooms

Debby Looney looks ahead to festive planting OCTOBER is drawing to a close and business is letting us know that Christmas is only x amount of weeks away. I am a notoriously last-minute type of person. One thing I am never too late for, though, is planting Hippeastrum bulbs. Or Amaryllis as they are more commonly (but wrongly) called. Hippeastrums are those tall, striking, red or white lily-type flowers we all associate with Christmas. For many years I bought them as cut flowers, but now prefer to grow the bulbs. They will be available from the end of October onwards, as they must be planted between five and eight weeks before they are needed, which is usually, but not necessarily, Christmas. When you go to buy the bulbs, size is everything. Unfortunately the larger the bulb the higher the cost, but if you buy cheaper, smaller bulbs the flowers will also be smaller and weaker. A decent sixed bulb should be about 15cm in diameter. Place it in an adequately sized container – there should be about 5cm between the edge of the pot and the bulb. Fill the pot with multipurpose compost, leaving the neck and shoulders of the bulb above the soil. Place in a bright spot, but away from heat and direct sunlight. Water moderately until growth starts, and then start feeding with a liquid feed such as baby bio every second week. By Christmas it should be in full bloom. When the flower fades, stop feeding and give it less water until the foliage has turned yellow. Then stop watering altogether as it goes dormant. The bulb can remain in the same pot for about three years, at which point it should need a larger pot. There is still time to plant other bulbs, such as hyacinths, grape hyacinths (muscari), dwarf daffodils, crocus and snowdrops for an indoor display. Using old teacups, teapots, soup bowls and even gravy boats can be an attractive way of displaying indoor or outdoor arrangements. Lining glass jars or vases with moss – the nice side facing out! – before filling with compost is another way to create a cost effective yet pretty pot. Tie a festive ribbon around it and you have a lovely gift. Remember that press full of old, mismatched and unwanted Christmas crockery? Well, plant them up – they will make great gifts too! • Got a gardening question? Contact Debby Looney on barnhillgarden@gmail.com

and music at community college

THEY followed the smell of freshly baked cupcakes as fifth and sixth class pupils filed into the corridors of Killarney Community College during the week. Parents and children were free to walk around the school on its open day and experience different subject areas throughout the college. The beakers bubbled in the science rooms as the students made their “elephant toothpaste” while the visitors also got to witness and take part in the dissection of hearts, kidneys and livers. The home economics, woodwork and music rooms also opened their doors. Principal Stella Loughnane in her address to the 400-plus crowd explained how Killarney Community College is a very progressive school. “It is the first school in Killarney to have adopted one-hour classes,” she said. “This year we have a new fully equipped school gym that is available to students at scheduled times. The rowing machines are a big attraction with the students already this year.” Killarney Community College fully embraces new technologies and has recently implemented the innovative computer system Microsoft 365 which is helping the students be prepared for the future world of learning and work.

Crokes Win Again: The Five Biggest Talking Points It was another commanding final performance by the Crokes, writes Adam Moynihan

1. Crokes’ attacking efficiency the difference It’s no secret that the Crokes have an abundance of talent in their forward division but Sunday’s exhibition in point-kicking was a joy to behold. Incredibly, they managed 17 scores from just 20 shots on goal, and one of those missed opportunities was Shane Murphy’s 45 that struck the post. Captain Daithí Casey kicked some lovely points, including one exceptional strike off his left and a raking 45-metre effort with the outside of the right, and Kieran O’Leary and Micheál Burns also chipped in with some impressive scores of their own. South Kerry, on the other hand, had ten wides in total and ultimately that profligacy cost them.

Eoin Brosnan, who both made cameo appearances against South Kerry, lifted the Bishop Moynihan Cup for a record seventh time.

There’s no sign of any respite just yet for the reigning All-Ireland champions

2. Star turns from Kerry hopefuls In 2017, their success at club level actually worked against some of the Crokes players who would have been hoping to break into the Kerry set-up. They were occupied with the All-Ireland series at the beginning of the year and it seemed as though Eamonn Fitzmaurice wasn’t too keen on introducing certain players to the fold when he wasn’t able to blood them first in the league. Crokes will be favourites to win Munster again this time out and could well be busy throughout the spring but Fitzmaurice is unlikely to overlook Crokes’ young stars for another year.

Gavin White in particular has a lot of people talking. He was outstanding again on Sunday, breaking forward at will from defence and deservedly picking up the man-of-the-match award.

3. History makers Following Sunday’s triumph, Crokes are now tied with Austin Stacks and Laune Rangers as the most successful team in the history of the County Championship (twelve titles). For many players involved, it was their sixth final win in eight years and veterans Colm Cooper and

4. No rest for the winners They’ve hardly had a break in the past 18 months and there’s no sign of any respite just yet for the reigning All-Ireland champions. On Sunday they travel to Tipperary to face Clonmel Commercials in the Munster quarter final and, should they win, the semifinal is scheduled for two weeks later against the Clare champions (Clondegad or Kilmurry-Ibrickane). In between, they’ll take on Kilcummin in the O’Donoghue Cup. It has been a gruelling run but, at times like these, I’m sure the players don’t mind too much.

5. Gooch’s injury Cooper was Crokes’ top scorer in the Championship heading into the final but a hamstring injury meant he was unable to start last weekend. He did manage the last 15 minutes, however, so he could feature in the big Munster Championship games over the next couple of weeks. In truth, they realistically might not need him against Clonmel, who will be big underdogs on Sunday, and Kilcummin so it’s possible that he might be kept in cotton wool until the semi-final.

No Joy For Athletic & Cedar In FAI Junior Cup Cedar can take heart from their first foray on the national stage but it’s more bad news for The Blues, writes Athletic’s Adam Moynihan

The Cedar Galaxy squad. Below: The Killarney Athletic team who were defeated by Castleisland on Sunday.

OUR poor start to the season continued last Sunday as we fell to another disheartening defeat, this time losing 2-0 to Castleisland in the third round of the FAI Junior Cup. Castleisland is a difficult place to get a result – their pitch is a disgrace - so when you play there your attitude has to be 100% right from the start. Ours wasn’t and we found ourselves 2-0 down inside ten minutes. It was a real uphill struggle from then on in. We created plenty of decent chances, especially after the break, but we just couldn’t put the ball in the net. Our day, and probably our season so far, was summed up when Shane Lynch’s penalty was saved by Stephen Bartlett midway through the second period. It’s very disappointing to be out of the FAI at such an early stage but I suppose the more worrying thing is our form generally. We have another tough league fixture against Tralee Dynamos away this weekend and, even at this early stage, we really can’t afford to be dropping any more points. The fixtures aren’t getting any easier for us either. Next week we have Limerick kingpins Janesboro at home in the semi-final of the Munster Champions Trophy so we really need to get our act together. Cedar Galaxy’s run in the FAI Junior Cup also came to an end last Sunday as they lost 4-2 to Carrig Celtic of the Desmond League. Carrig are a Premier Division outfit so they would have been strong favourites to overcome Cedar, who currently find themselves top of Kerry’s Division 1A (third tier). John Foley and Joe Hurley scored for the hosts who will take heart from a couple of impressive performances in their first ever FAI Junior Cup adventure. Meanwhile, Celtic’s third round clash with Moher Celtic, which was supposed to take place last Saturday, was postponed due to a bereavement on

Our day, and probably our season so far, was summed up when Shane Lynch’s penalty was saved by Stephen Bartlett midway through the second period

the Moher side. That game has been rescheduled for this Saturday night at 7pm. Eoghan Donnellan’s team have made a blistering

start to the campaign and will fancy their chances at home to Moher, who are third last in the Clare Premier Division at the moment. In the Premier B, it’s top versus bottom as the winless Celtic Bs host high-flying Tralee Celtic tonight (Friday) at 7.30pm. Both Athletic and Celtic’s under 17s are in FAI Cup action tomorrow (Saturday) at 2pm. Athletic are at home to Ennis Town while Celtic welcome Asdee Rovers to Celtic Park. On Sunday, Mastergeeha will be looking to pick up their first points of the season when they play Dingle Bay Rovers in Kilbrean Park. Kick-off is at 2pm. Down in Division 1A, Cedar Galaxy will hoping to continue their recent good form at home to QPR and in 1B, the Athletic Bs play Castlemaine United in Woodlawn. Both games are at 11.30am.

Hamilton Close To Fourth Title

Formula 1 Briefs ... Red Bull driver Max Verstappen may find himself in trouble with the FIA after he referred to a steward as an “idiot” following the US Grand Prix. Niki Lauda says Ferrari are “easy to beat” when emotions are running high at the Italian team. Carlos Sainz Jr described his debut weekend for Renault as “very close to perfect” after finishing seventh at the United States Grand Prix. Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton was surprised that Ferrari title rival Sebastian Vettel did not put up a tougher fight in Austin, Texas.

Soccer

LEWIS HAMILTON edges closer to a fourth F1 title after an unchallenged race win in last weekend’s US Grand Prix, in Austin, Texas. The Mercedes driver extends his lead to 66 points over Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel. Hamilton reported after the race that he was surprised that Ferrari was unable to put up a challenge in the race. Vettel led the championship for the first half of the season, but the Ferrari driver and team have handed the championship to Hamilton and

Mercedes with the recent mechanical failings and seriously misjudged start line incident in Singapore. With three races remaining Vettel has a mathematical chance of the championship but both Hamilton and Mercedes’ recent form would suggest different. On the other hand Hamilton could secure the title in this weekend’s Mexican Grand Prix in Mexico City if he finishes in the top five with the Brazilian and Abu Dhabi Grand Prix to spare.

Meeke & Nagle –

Munster Selection For Talented Robert

Words: Eve Kelliher

Favourites for Rally GB

CITROEN’S WRC crew, Kris Meeke and Paul Nagle, are favourites to take a win in this weekend’s Rally GB the penultimate round of the World Rally Championship. A dominant victory last time out in Spain, no championship at stake and good road position puts the Citroen crew in a strong position for victory. M-Sport team-mates Sebastien Ogier and Ott Tanak as well as Hyundai driver Thierry Neuville are three drivers still in contention for

the 2017 WRC title, but Ogier will be operating on the side of caution, Tanak will be following team orders and Neuville’s confidence in his car will be at a low after it proved to be fragile on recent events. A hat trick of wins would top of a difficult 2017 season for the Citroen crew, Spain in the bag, GB is on the cards and should the Championship go down to Australia, Meeke and Nagle would be favourites there also. Go for it…

Rugby News ... Words: Liam Murphy LAST weekend saw Munster take on Paris outfit Racing Metro at Thomond Park in the second round of the European Cup. Following on from last weekend’s hard fought draw away to Castres, the pressure was on Peter O’Mahony’s men to push on and earn that first vital win of the campaign. Last week was the first anniversary of the sad and untimely passing of Anthony Foley, which occurred in Paris, so the

DEFINITELY a talent to keep an eye on, Killarney’s Robert Osbourne has been named as the sole Kerry player in Derek O’Brien’s 16-man Munster squad. Robert will line out for next month’s under-18 schools interprovincial tour-

timing of this fixture was not lost on any Munster fans. Added to this would be the return of Ronan O’Gara and Donncha Ryan, Racing were always going to be a special side. The first half of the match was dominated by the terrible playing conditions as the remnants of Storm Brian battered the country and the half time score read 0-0, belying the decent rugby on show. With world-class outhalf Dan Carter electing not to kick at the posts, the game would be decided by the ball in hand. Conor Murray fortuitously pounced on a poor clearance kick with a charge down resulting in the first try of

nament in the AUL in Dublin. A delighted Killarney Celtic congratulated Robert. “He’s a super keeper with a great attitude…..just like Paddy, his dad and number-one fan. Huge congrats from all at the club,” said Ramona Keogh Burchill.

the match. Ian Kearney was outstanding on the day and in the end the home side won out on a 14-7 scoreline. All in all a good way to remember Axel with a good win. RTÉ showed a wonderfully made tribute documentary to Anthony Foley last Monday night as Ophelia raged across the country. With contributions from ex Shannon, Munster and Ireland teammates and friends and family, it was clear that Axel was held in such high esteem right across the globe. A year on, Foley remains a driving force behind the new Munster, and rightly so.

On The Ball Dr Crokes SENIOR COUNTY FINAL 2017: Played in Austin Stack Park. Dr Crokes 0-17 South Kerry 1-12. At the end of the first quarter it was a definite that this game was going to go to the wire. We got on top in the early stages and led 0-7 to 0-3 coming to the end of the first fifteen-minute period. We were rocked by a South Kerry goal at the commencement of the second quarter to leave us just a point ahead. We shaded the last ten minutes, scoring four points to our opponents three. This left us 0-11 to 1-6 in front when the referee blew the half time whistle. Their goalkeeper denied us goals with

Sport

some great saves in this first half but our goalkeeper Shane Murphy made some great saves also during the game and his kick outs were also excellent. The teams exchanged points on two occasions in the first twelve minutes of the second half. Two points from South Kerry without reply brought them equality with ten minutes to go. The defining moments of the game came in the next seven minutes when we sent over three unanswered points. We now had a three-point lead with six minutes to go including three minutes of injury time. We were also down to fourteen men at this period but our defence managed us to hold out. Our opponents sent over two points to leave just the minimum between the sides. A point by Kieran O’Leary in the 62nd minute eased our anxiety but we were relieved to hear the referee’s final whistle a minute later. This left us winners on a scoreline of 0-17 to 1-12. We had to line out without our talisman Colm Cooper but all our lads responded to the task we had in hand and this carried us over the line in the end. Colm came on in the last quarter and had a big part in our recycling of the ball in the closing stages and our eventual win. This was a twenty-one-man victory as all played their part, the first fifteen and the six subs introduced. One however would have to mention Kieran O’Leary 0-4, Micheal Burns 0-4 and Daithi Casey 0-3 who contributed eleven points from play. One would also have to single out Gavin White who deservedly won the man of match award. South Kerry were in this match right to the final whistle and can be very proud of their display. There was the minimum between the sides at half time– 1-6 to 1-5. However, Beaufort proved stronger in the second half. Final score: Beaufort 1-18 Glenflesk 1-10. East Kerry’s Pat O’Brien presented the Gleneagle Hotel Cup to Beaufort Captain Jonathan Kissane.

This is an open invitation to everyone in the community members and non-members alike. It presents the ideal opportunity to get an update on progress so far and to inspect the future plans for the club’s facilities which will enhance the lives of the entire community. SENIOR FOOTBALL CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP PLAYOFF: Kilcummin 1-10 Kerins O’Rahillys 2-12. We left Austin Stack Pk on Sunday last with a mixture of emotions, disappointed at losing our senior status, mystified and frustrated at some decisions but the overriding feeling was one of great pride. Our players and mentors gave it everything and despite a number of injuries we left with our heads held high after a very competitive and entertaining game. It brings to an end a twenty-year journey as a senior club that saw us reach one Senior Co Championship final, in 2002 one semifinal and replay, in 2007 a Munster Senior Club Semi-Final in 2007 and a Minor Co Championship title in 2010. Sunday’s game saw us play some of our best football of the year and at half time both sides had scored 1-4 apiece. Kevin McCarthy finished sublimely to the net after an outstanding catch and pass from Kevin Gorman who had a fine game throughout. Brendan Kealy had opened the

scoring with a long range free Matt Keane and Noel Duggan accounting for the other scores. A quick start to the second half saw Matt Keane and Brendan Kealy add further points but Rahillys matched score for score. Despite some powerful defending and further scores courtesy of Noel Duggan and Kevin Mc Carthy we found ourselves trailing by two points with two minutes left. However, following a free awarded to Rahillys that left most spectators scratching their heads to put it mildly, the ball ended up in the net to put a fivepoint margin between the teams and a flattering score line for the winners. LOTTO: There was no winner on Sunday 22nd October 2017. Numbers drawn were 6, 17, 24, 27. Next Draw Sunday, 5th October 2017. Jackpot now €7,750.

Who will be October’s Manager of the Month?

THE winner of the October Manager of the Month award in our popular fantasy football league will be decided this weekend and it’s still all to play for. Sinéad Tangney currently leads the way on 138 following her impressive 73-point haul in Gameweek 9. Usual suspects Harry Kane and Nicolás Otamendi chipped in with 16 and 15 points respectively, while a sneaky nine-pointer from Bournemouth’s Andrew Surman was a nice bonus. Things could have been even better for Sinéad: she had Newcastle pair Rob Elliot and Jamaal Lascelles, who combined for 13 points, on the bench. Second-placed Jason O’Grady had an even better week as his brave decision to captain Harry Kane helped him to a whopping total of 83. City stars Otamendi and Leroy Sané also provided big scores as Jason shot up the table. He now finds himself just three points off the leader in our monthly table. In third, Daniel Foley, Finn Kennelly and Mark O’Keeffe are all on 133 and still very much in the hunt, as is everyone in the top 20 really. As October is a shortened month in terms of Premier League football, and with things so close at the top, this represents a great opportunity for more casual players to challenge for the big monthly prize: a €50 voucher for Brian James. It’ll be interesting to see if any special tactics will be employed by the people in contention, such as utilising the once-per-season bonuses of ‘Bench Boost’ (which counts the scores of your substitutes

as well as your starters), ‘Free Hit’ (which allows you to make unlimited free transfers for a single Gameweek) and ‘Triple Captain’ (which triples your captain’s points). There are also big decisions to be made in terms of transfers and team selection. Gabriel Jesus and Raheem Sterling, two of the most signed players in Gameweek 9, were both dropped for last weekend’s win over Burnley so they might be on the chopping block for fantasy managers, as might Tottenham’s Ben Davies who features in 21% of fantasy teams but in real life is facing stiff opposition from the likes of Serge Aurier and the returning Danny Rose. Choosing the right captain is always a huge factor but two of the most popular options, Romelu Lukaku and Harry Kane, go head-to-head this weekend as United play Spurs on Saturday morning. It’s difficult to go with a City attacker as there’s no way of predicting who Guardiola will go with, so that leaves maybe someone like Lacazette or Sánchez of Arsenal (Swansea at home) or Chelsea’s Álavaro Morata (Bournemouth away). Looking at the bigger picture, Mark O’Keeffe has overtaken Darren O’Mahoney at the summit of the overall table with Brian O’Mahony a point behind Darren in third. Myself and Patrick Collins are joint fourth with Kevin McCarthy and Noel Duggan in a tie for sixth. Cian Tobin, Ian Devane and Will Courtney make up the top ten.
