Fly tipping biggest cause of litter in National Park Fly tipping is the biggest cause of litter in the National Park and it is causing problems for the park’s wildlife. RUBBISH SITUATION: A stag deer in Knockreer National Park after getting his antlers caught up in litter. Photo Peter O’Toole
| By Sean Moriarty That is according the park’s Conservation Ranger Peter O’Toole. Mr O’Toole has been monitoring deer activity in the park for over 30 years. This week he took a photograph of a stag with a plastic rubbish bag trapped in his antlers. It was taken on Saturday, the day after
1000s of Killarney students took part in a climate change rally in the town. Overall, litter is not a huge issue in the park, Mr O’Toole stated but at times of heavy rain, litter and other rubbish tends to get washed down the rivers Flesk and Deenagh and into to the lakes. “Wave action on the lakes brings this rubbish the to the shore, the issue is fly tipping further up the catchment area,”
he told the Killarney Advertiser. “This is mating or rutting season and deer tend to scrape the ground in frustration so this is the only time of the year you would see something like this. But I have seen it more and more in recent years. I am working in the park since the 1980s and would not have seen this in the past.” Single use plastic bottles is another
Killarney students join world wide climate change rally | By Sean Moriarty Students from the three secondary schools in Killarney joined millions of their peers worldwide when they took part in what has been described as the largest global climate protest in history. On Friday last; first, second, third and transition-year students from St Brigid's Presentation Secondary School, St Brendan's College and Killarney Community College united to spell out the word 'Now' in the grounds of St Mary's Cathedral in a call to politicians to take action to prevent further climate change. growing problem in the park. Once the vegetation starts to thin in the autumn months, bottles that were discarded during the busy summer months become more visible. “We see a lot more plastic than we did in the past,” he added. “But groups like Valley Rowing Club and Lough Lein Anglers volunteer to clean up the lakes shores. “ ment has been inactive on environmental issues and that this inaction has led to a rise in emissions and damage to in environment. “During the final period [on Friday] the students gathered in the Bishop's field and created a powerful visual demand statement regarding Climate Action,” said St Brendan’s principal Sean Coffey. “Marshalled by Mr. Declan O'Donoghue and his Politics and Society Class, the 1000-plus students created the NOW image. We are most thankful to fifth year student Iuvali Cazacu and Mr. John C. O'Shea for their drone expertise and their work in capturing this statement image.” Later in the day the same students gathered to hear a highly informative input from Dr. Aidan Forde, of Saorgus Energy Ltd., the firm behind the wind farms in the Stacks Mountains outside Tralee, on the impact of carbon loading on our climate. “A huge thank you to our past pupil for his insightful presentation,” added Mr Sean Coffey.

Killarney mountain biker remembered 20 years on
A trophy that commemorates one of Killarney Cycling Club’s most-talented young mountain bikers has been presented for the first time in years thanks to the resurgence of the sport in the Killarney area. | By Sean Moriarty
TRIBUTES: Johnny “Batt” Cronin was a Spa GAA stalwart and a legendary tradesman. Photo by Spa GAA.
Tributes paid to Johnny “Batt” Cronin
Leon McSharry (14) from Ballyspillane was cycling on Park Road when he was fatally injured after being struck by a passing car in July 1999. Leon was one of the local club’s best Mountain Bike racers and each year the club presented the Leon McSharry Cup to the fastest competitor in the club’s flagship event. Interest in the sport waned, mainly due to lack of a suitable venue, but thanks to the new facility at Shronaboy Farm near Glenflesk the sport is enjoying a second wind in the Killarney area. So much so Killarney Cycling Club was in a position to run a counting round of the Irish Downhill Mountain Bike Series
at the venue last Sunday. The Leon McSharry Cup was presented to Cork rider Olly Cornforth , the overall winner of the Elite category at the event. It was a poignant occasion for Leon’s club mates, many of whom were on hand to marshal and ensure the smooth running of the event, 20 years after his untimely passing. His mother Maureen was on hand to present the trophy. “It was lovely out there, Leon would have been fierce proud,” she told the Killarney Advertiser. “There was a huge turnout and I was talking to people from Dublin, Clare all over. I can’t believe it’s 20 years, where have 20 years gone, but it is so good of the club.”
Tributes have been paid to the much loved St Brendan’s College caretaker Johnny “Batt” Cronin who passed away on Monday. | By Sean Moriarty He was also a star wing back and played with Spa GAA during its glory days of the early 1970s. Johnny won seven O’Donoghue Cup medals with Spa as well as a county intermediate medal in 1974 and was member of the East Kerry divisional side that won the first All-Ireland Club Championship in 1971. Current mayor of Killarney Michael Gleeson was a Spa GAA teammate of Johnny’s through the 1960s and 1970s. “We were great friends and he was a loyal friend to many people,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “He was an outstanding Spa club man. Jonnhny was revered in the club and he will be irreplaceable to his family and wider Spa community.” Johnny, who was originally from the Tiernaboul area but lived in Coolcorcoran, was laid to rest yesterday (Thursday) in Aghadoe Cemetery, following his funeral mass in St Mary's Cathedral.
His working life took him from Pretty Polly, to the Torc Hotel and finally to St Brendan’s College. He was acknowledged as an outstanding tradesman and was the go-to-man when homes or business needed emergency repairs. “Such was his loyalty, that even during his illness to made sure he cut the grass is the Sem playing fields and did so up to a couple of weeks ago,” added Mayor Gleeson. “He was a gifted all round trades person and had a great sense of fun, enjoyment and mimicry.” Spa GAA club presented him with a lifetime achievement award by the club four year ago – the highest honour possible within the club. Spa GAA formed a guard of honour at the funeral and funeral gifts were offered by Mayor Gleeson and his life-long friend Brian Fenton, father of the current Dublin All Ireland winner of the same name. Johnny is survived by his wife Margaret and sons Donagh, Colm, Eoin, Cormac.

New Killarney Culture Centre hosts first event
Last Friday night’s countywide Culture Night marked the first time that the newly refurbished Killarney Cultural Centre on the East Avenue Road was open to the public. | By Sean Moriarty The building was revamped at a cost of €240,000 with half of the cost being provided by the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht and the other half by Kerry County Council. Local sean-nós singer DB O'Conor presented an hour long session of Irish music, storytelling, sean-nós singing and

dancing in the Irish rambling house tradition at the newly revamped venue as part of a series of events to mark Culture Night in Killarney and across the county. “Friday was the first event and it was great to see a full house,” Eileen O’Donoghue, Killarney Municipal District Officer, told the Killarney Advertiser. The official opening will take place in the next few weeks.
FINISH LINE: Work on the Killarney Micro Track should be completed – weather permitting – in the next few weeks
The Killarney Micro Track is less than three weeks from completion. | By Sean Moriarty Fencing work at the track was completed last week and lighting and basketball hoops were being installed this week. Once these tasks are out of the way it is hoped that the track laying work will begin. This is weather dependent but it is hoped all works will be finished in the next two to three weeks with a late October opening on the cards. “The track laying will need four to five dry days in a row,” funding coordinator Gerry Griffin told the Killarney Advertiser. “We are closely watching the weath-
er sites and Monday October 8 could be a good week to start laying the track, but it is Ireland in October so we have to be optimistic. The micro track, also known as South and East Kerry Community Rural Track project, is located on the grounds of St Brendan’s College, and will benefit up to 2,000 students from nearby schools, athletic clubs, paralympic athletes, Special Olympics athletes and community groups. An open public meeting will take place on Wednesday next (October 3) at the Killarney Park Hotel.
OPENING NIGHT: A full house enjoys the first event at the newly refurbished Cultural Centre.
Results of tidy towns due Monday | By Sean Moriarty Killarney will learn its fate in the annual Tidy Towns Competition on Monday. Results of the 51st annual competition will be announced at lunchtime on Monday. Killarney organisers say they are quietly
confident that the town can repeat its 2011 success as the overall winner of the competition but would be equally happy if the town was in the top three in its population category. Killarney last won the Large Town award (for towns with a population of under 25,000 people) in 2013. “We are quietly optimistic that Killarney will stay in the top three in our category and hopefully we can come out overall winners,” Johnny Maguire, Killarney Tidy Towns committee member, told the Killarney Advertiser. “It is a combined effort of the staff and management of the Killarney Municipal District and the Tidy Towns volunteers that have kept Killarney in tip-top shape all year round.”

Make Way Day shows issues that people with disabilities face
Members of Killarney Access Group and well-known local people with disabilities took to the streets of Killarney yesterday (Thursday) to highlight obstacles they meet on an everyday basis. | By Sean Moriarty Poorly parked cars and trucks, wheelie bins left on the streets for collection, bicycles chained tided to fences and lamp posts, suitcases being loaded into tour coaches and even dogs tied to railings are just some of the obstacles wheelchair users and visually impaired people face every day. Thursday was Make Way Day, a national day of action organised by the Disability Federation of Ireland and locally by the Killarney Access Group the Municipal District Council. Well-known local musician Morgan Pierce is visually impaired. He uses a cane to find his way around. “Suitcases on the footpath are the bane of my life,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “I enjoy running too and often go for a run out the Muckross Road. People ask me why I need a cane to get around town and can go running without one. It is simple, I just know there will be no obstructions out the Muckross Road.” Morgan’s cane is fitted with a special golf ball-sized extension. It helps him identify cracks in the pavement and other potential hazards that could lead him to trip or fall. “The new pedestrian zone in Tralee has a special groove in the footpath that acts like a guide,” he added and would like the Municipal District Council to consider adding the same in future Killarney improvement works. Municipal District officer Eileen O’Dono-
ghue confirmed that the local council has done an audit in the town centre and that there is now a programme of works based on the results of that audit. “One of the reasons we put the new bike racks into various town centre locations was to discourage people from chaining their bicycles to railings and other places that may cause an obstruction,” she explained. Timo O’Sullivan, a well-knows member of Lough Lein Anglers Association and a long-time campaigner has been in a wheelchair for 35 years following a workplace accident. “Since day one things have improved immensely,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “Killarney is not a bad town but we have to strive for better.” His biggest issue is poorly parked cars and cars and delivery trucks parked in dedicated blue zones. “I heard a story where a group of wheelchair users parked several of their chairs in an ordinary parking zone and left notes saying ‘back in five minutes’ on them to get a message across,” he added.

Killarney to host international darts tournament
Gretta O’Sullivan Healy celebrated her birthday at the Torc Hotel in a very different way last Saturday night. Gretta is a cancer patient and is receiving treatment at both the Oncology Unit in the South Infirmary in Cork and Recovery Haven in Tralee. Her daughter, Anna Rose, is currently based in China but she and her Spainbased brother Sean surprised her by arriving home in time for the celebration. But this was only the beginning. Anna Rose wanted to say thanks to the various organisations that have helped her family during her mother’s illness. She decided to cut her hair – all 52 inches of it – to raise money for the Oncology Unit in the South Infirmary, Recovery Ha-
ven and The Little Princess Trust. She had the equivalent of three pony tails chopped and alongside the €200 raised in donations her hair will be used to make wigs for children who have lost their hair due to illnesses. In addition to the €200 raised for The Little Princess Trust, Gretta’s birthday fund raised an additional €500 for both the South Infirmary and Recovery Haven. “I was a little bit emotional, my hair has been long for as long as I can remember," the Killorglin native told the Killarney Advertiser. “It feels great to help worthy causes. We are lucky to have our health and should give where we can. When you want to feel rich, you should count what you have, rather than what you would like to have.”
Some of the biggest names in international darts will be Killarney for a new tournament in November. | By Sean Moriarty The new for 2019 Killarney Darts Festival will take place at the INEC between November 8 and 10. It is a joint venture between the Irish National Darts Organisation, the governing body for the sport in Ireland, and British Darts Organisation (BDO), organiser of the famous World Professional Championships tournament that takes place each January in London and broadcasts live on Eurosport. The London flagship event attracts the best dart players in the world and with the Killarney event offering at total
€28,000 in prizemoney, Irish organisers hope to attract some of the biggest names in Europe to the INEC. Full details of the competition have yet to be released but a launch event is being readied for the Gleneagle Hotel in coming weeks. Local dart competitors welcomed the news. “It is a big deal and will raise awareness in the town,” Kerry Darts Team Manager, Gary McCormick, told the Killarney Advertiser. “The town league is starting soon and it looks like we will have 20 teams instead of 28 this year, but this event will promote darts in the county and in Ireland.”

Awards for Buckley's Chernobyl Killarney actor Jessie Buckley has praised the input of Chernobyl Children International founder Adi Roche after the film she starred in took ten awards at the 71st Primetime Emmy Awards which were hosted in Los Angeles, California on Monday night. Chernobyl is based around around the Chernobyl nuclear disaster of April 1986 and the unprecedented clean-up efforts that followed. Buckley plays the challenging role of Lyudmilla Ignatenko, an enormously courageous woman whose firefighter husband Vasily was one of the 700,000 so called “Liquidators” who were ordered into the
Chernobyl plant to try to contain the catastrophic nuclear explosion. Roche’s Chernobyl Children International was consulted by the HBO/Sky Atlantic production team during pre-planning for the series in 2018. “Adi was so incredibly generous with her time. I don’t think I’ve ever met anybody with that unique empathy that she has. And the work that she has continued to do to help the victims of Chernobyl has been inspiring,” she said. The series took home ten awards in multiple categories, including Outstanding Limited Series, at the awards which is considered the pinnacle of recognition for the television production industry.

Models in Recovery fundraiser packs INEC
Over 1000 people enjoyed the sixth annual Models in Recovery fashion show at the INEC in the Gleneagle Hotel on Wednesday night. Each of the 22 models, 16 women and six men, are all cancer survivors. Among them was Orlaith Monks from Beaufort who had a double mastectomy. The well-known Beaufort woman is no stage to the stage having performed with Killarney Musical Society several times in the past. However, Wednesday night’s Models in Recovery appearance was an emotional experience for her. “I am doing this for those who can't,” she told the Killarney Advertiser ahead of her
appearance on Wednesday night. The annual event raised tens of thousands of euro for the Kerry Hospice Foundation. One of the highlights of the night was the appearance of the St Brendan’s College Choir. Several members of the choir had earlier in the day attended the funeral of Johnny “Batt” Cronin, the school’s popular caretaker, who died earlier in the week. The choir dedicated their performance to the memory of their friend and colleague.

THE
x
Columnist ANNE LUCEY gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry and beyond
Public servants
In 2007 staff costs of a much lower budget accounted for 38 percent; I tracked the huge leaps for a number of years and last year a whopping €67.88 million, or 47 percent of the total expenditure, went on payroll costs including pension and travel and subsistence. I mention this in the context of the 10 percent increase in local property tax councilors voted through for the people of Killarney, but also in the failure of successive governments to tackle what has now become a monster in the State, the public service pay bill. Moira Murrell, chief executive said council finances are under pressure from increasing salaries and pension costs.
PAY RISES
The European Central Bank some years ago took ten countries and found ‘notable’ differences between what the public sector were paid and what the private sector earned in some countries. Greece, Ireland, Italy and Portugal and Spain, exhibited far higher public sector premiums over the private sector than countries like Germany, France and the Nordic countries
Pay rises of almost four percent are due across the public sector in the next 12 months – at a time of Brexit when thousands of jobs will be lost in the private sector in Kerry and other rural areas. State workers in this country earn 35 percent more than private sector workers, and that is an average. But in places like Killarney where the main employment is tourism, state workers earn three times what the private sector person does. The average pay for a state worker is €50,320 compared to a private sector employee earning € 37,291. A tourist worker earns € 18,400 according to official stats from May of this year. That is about half what a retired teacher, garda, and other similar public sector workers can net in pension these days and probably a quarter or even an eighth, of retired TDs and ministers. Ireland has fewer public servants than many countries (58 per 1,000 people; while the Nordic countries like Norway have about 158 public servants per 1,000 people), yet public service pay costs as a percentage of GDP here are way above the Nor-
“
Salaries are, on average, 35% higher in the public than the private sector.
“

dic countries and Ireland is again bunched with Greece, Spain – hardly the most rigorous of companions. The €80,000 or so average cost to the state of employing a public servant in Ireland is almost twice that of Norway at €43,000. So to put it bluntly – Ireland has among the fewest public servants per head of population – fewer guards, nurses, teachers, road workers and even hedge-cutters but they are also the most expensive, have the best pensions, and are paid the most.
LOST GENERATION
A generation of bright young people will be naturally tempted to join the public service, for no other reason than salaries and security. It is hard to blame them. I know of people in their mid 20s who have recently joined the civil service, in Dublin.
Google offering to build houses for their highly paid global staff in Dublin? Just why Google or Facebook are in Dublin is another story, but it can surely have nothing to do with the kid glove tax treatment to corporations and the barely glanced at personal data compliance culture across all bodies that exists in this country where very few private matters outside of the confession box are held secure. Now, we are of course back to the days of the Guinness corporation in Dublin
building fine houses for staff, and the landlords in Killarney housing their tenants and workers. I think it was only the briefest of ages when this State actually built enough houses.
GOLDEN AGE
It was from around the mid 1950s to the early 1970s. That was the golden age of modern Ireland insofar as it addressed the wrongs of social housing and health with public dispensaries and inoculation programmes, got rid of the scourge of TB and introduced
free secondary education. This was when local authorities had more autonomy, were in charge of hospitals, when civil servants and politicians were actually public ‘servants’ employed in serving their communities and their country for modest but secure incomes . So now we have Google ready to pick up the slack left by a State in love with its global corporations and auctioneers and speculators. Before we get carried away, there was an interesting piece in the Irish Times
In their first weeks of work they were warned take more tea breaks in order to slow down as they were working too fast for their colleagues. We are led to believe that sort of culture went out with benchmarking – it did not.
PROPERTY TAX
Meanwhile, in a town reeling under the VAT increases and with a noticeable downturn in business, where the main employment is the lowest paid, and almost wholly dependent on private enterprise and innovation, and living on its wits, you must not forget to congratulate your local councilors, Michael Gleeson, Marie Moloney, Niall Kelleher, and Niall O’Callaghan who were among the 16 who voted for a ten per cent increase in the property tax on your home and business. You will be delighted to hear this, in a time of Brexit, of fewer bookings, of increased petrol costs, increased coal costs and the looming job losses. And it is worth pointing out that Killarney people who mostly work in the lower paid private and self-employed sectors have the highest property values because let's face it Killarney is the most desirable place to live in Kerry. We will actually be paying far more than Tralee or Listowel householders in the increases sanctioned. It gets better for Killarney people - the increase in the LPT will be ringfenced for north Kerry Greenways! The Tralee to Fenit Greenway and the Kilmorna to Listowel Greenway to be precise (Where is Kilmorna?) Oh, and hedge-cutting enforcement. Enforcement, mind you! Not actually cutting the hedges! Right! by Una Mullally this week – the State could provide housing if the likes of Apple, Google and Facebook paid full tax, she said, a position which has long been argued in this column. But Ms Mullally also warned how in San Francisco Google had pledged one billion US dollars to facilitate the building of 20,000 houses in the Bay area . Except it wasn’t really a billion dollars – they already owned the land – and a billion dollars would hardly build 1,300 apartments let alone 20,000 houses in the Bay area! Google paid €171 million euro in tax on profit in 2017, yes profit, of €1.16 billion. Nice tax rate for Google, of just under 15 per cent. Now, just how many of us are on those kind of low tax rates?

WEDDING OF THE WEEK

“We had the Dublin African Gospel Choir at the church which was amazing. I volunteer with the Kenya Education Project (Killarney based charity) and travel to Embulbul every year as part of that project and so it was fabulous to have the gospel choir there for our wedding day,” Katie who is from Lissivigeen explained. The couple, who got engaged on Ballyheigue beach in July 2018, were married at the Holy Cross Church Kenmare, local church to Patrick by Fr. Kieran O’Brien. Katie’s parents are Padraig and Mary O’Connell while Patrick, a well-known politician in his own right, is the son of the former councillor Michael and Eleanor Connor Scarteen. Eimear Griffin fulfilled Matron of Honour of honour duties while Katie’s bridesmaids were Caroline O’Connell(sister), Clodagh Lanigan Ryan and Karina Murphy.
Best Man duties fell to Rory O’Sullivan and Patrick’s chosen groosmen Andrew O’Connell (brother of the bride) Adrian O’Sullivan and Jerry O’Sullivan. Katie chose a dress from Myrtle Ivory Dublin. Her hair was by Tricia O' Sullivan and her chosen make artist was Marilyn McSweeney. Later that day they celebrated with family and friends at the Sheen Falls Hotel, celebrants included Katie's two grandmothers Nessa Lucey and Bridie O Connell, while her grandaunt Mary Prendiville, who she describes as her third granny, was also there. The couple enjoyed a honeymoon in Dubrovnik, Croatia and Svet Stefan, Montenegro. “Shaun Leane, Jeweler London designed our rings. He is a friend of ours and was at the wedding too,” added Katie.

Culture Night success all around Killarney Culture Night started early at St. Brigid’s Secondary School, the first school in the county to put on a special event for Culture Night, while the work of professional artists was on view at Kerry Visual Arts Showcase at Government Buildings, in a show that runs until October 31.
Autumn nature event in National Park this weekend
The Showcase is an opportunity for the recent work of visual artists to be shown in Kerry, and all work is for sale. Killarney’s events were very well attended again with events in Killarney House, Muckross Schoolhouse, St. Mary’s Church, the INEC, the Cultural Centre and more. Numbers were up on last year and the early estimates indicated that thousands of people attended various events across the county. Artists, arts organisations and arts centre offered up a diverse selection of free events late into the night. The evening was supported by the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht and the Creative Ireland programme in partnership with Kerry County Council. “We had 70 events in 24 towns right
across Kerry, and we want to thank all the artists, event organisers, ambassadors and audiences for making Culture Night the very special occasion that is was this year”, said Kate Kennelly, Arts Officer and Creative Ireland Kerry Co-ordinator at Kerry County Council. Culture Night is an annual all-island public event that celebrates culture, creativity and the arts. It has grown from a small-scale cultural event in Dublin in 2006 to the significant national cultural event it is now, with some 400,000 people visiting museums, galleries, historic houses, artists’ studios and cultural centres across the island. The initiative has captured both the public imagination and the enthusiasm of artists and cultural organisations.
Killarney House and Gardens and Killarney National Park Education Centre is holding a free two day event with informative talks and activities called ‘Knowing Nature in Autumn’ on Saturday and Sunday. | By Sean Moriarty Both days will bring together various groups from around Kerry who will offer a variety of talks and activities. The talks will focus on the rich natural heritage of Kerry, highlighting the work being done in the locality, and the activities will demonstrate a practical element to conservation, all aiming to foster an appreciation of the natural world around us. Talks from groups including KerryLIFE, Institute Technology Tralee, Killarney
National Park Rangers, and KNPEC and a diverse range of activities are arranged for the two days. Visitors will learn how to save seeds from pollinator plants and trees and to identify wildflowers with the Kerry Branch of the Botanical Society of Britain and Ireland, examine moth traps, take part in mammal trapping demonstrations and go on a nocturnal ramble. “It promises to be a fun filled two days for all,” said Killarney House and Garden Visitor Guide Breda Moriarty.

BUSINESS WEEK OF
THE
No-one knows security like we do Local Kilcummin company, Kingdom Security promises to take your home or business security to the next level by combining the latest in security technology with the latest in internet and mobile phone technology. Imagine sitting on the beach while enjoying a family holiday and a notification popping up on your mobile telling you a vehicle has entered your property. You can watch live footage of the vehicle (or person) and if they are not who you want them to be you can remotely access the alarm and activate it if you need to. That is of course assuming the intruding vehicle has passed another optional security feature. Automatic gates fitted with Automatic Number Plate Recognition, cameras can open gates for a list of pre-approved registration numbers and simply, will not open for someone not on
your list. But what will I do if this happens at night, you might ask. Suitable cameras with pre-installed night vision technology will automatically follow the intruder in full colour for up to 150 meters. Here is another question, you are still on holidays but you have booked a trades person to come a do a few jobs downstairs. They have passed all the tests at the gate, assuming you have automatic gates fitted (not saying trade persons are thieves) and they are now working in the kitchen but you don’t want them wandering around to other rooms of the
house. Technology supplied by Kingdom Security will allow you to set the alarm in all or pre-selected rooms at any onetime via your mobile phone. The same technology can switch on or off lights in any room in the house. Intruder alarms supplied and fitted (staff are fully trained by the UK manufacturer) take on a new meaning. Kingdom Security’s intruder alarms can be supplied in a range of different sizes so they do not look out of place on the wall of any room, while the sensors on the doors or windows are so small they can be hidden on the internal frame adding peace of mind and discretion in the one go. Additional features mean that these units can be supplied in a range of different colours or styles helping them to blend even more into the background, styles
include recessed keypads available in a range of colours and finishes. Founded by business partners Brian and Lucas, they both come from an industrial electronics and IT background. The firm is licensed by the Private Security Authority, fully insured and they employ qualified registered electrician for electrical work. And last but not least for livestock owners; cattle, sheep and horses, you can now watch the arrival of new stock from the comfort of your home by day or night on your mobile and attend to them if needed. This week we are looking at teenage acne and things we can do to prevent or remedy outbreaks
Teenage skin, the dos and don’ts The last thing a teenager wants to hear is that Acne is a normal part of puberty or that in a few years his/her face will clear up. They want a solution right now and a plan of action on how to prevent the blemishes from spreading and get on with living. Acne generally occurs at puberty, although can strike anytime. It occurs when the body increases production of androgens (male sex hormones). These hormones stimulate the production of keratin (a type of protein) and sebum (an oily skin lubricant). If sebum is secreted faster than it can move through the pores, a blemish arises. Mild acne can be reduced with a whole food diet, natural health remedies and a good skincare routine. Like anything else, it will take time. There is no quick fix solution. However, there are some simple lifestyle changes which your teen should follow to help prevent and reduce their breakouts.
KEEP SKIN CLEAN
The skin breathes. Dust, grime, oils and pollutants can clog the skin’s pores and irritate existing acne. Teens should wash their face thoroughly twice a day. Over washing, or excessive scrubbing can make acne worse by over stimulating the sebaceous glands, causing them to produce excessive amounts of sebum. Use an all-natural cleanser especially formulated for young skin i.e. Weleda cleansing lotion and Sukin Micellar Water or Kinvara cleansing oil. The most important thing is to moisturize after cleansing to protect the skin and replace the natural oils and sebum that have been washed away. What I recommend is Dr. Hauschka Clarifying Oil or Dr. Hauschka Melissa Day Cream and Trilogy Balancing Face Lotion. All in which are light weight and hydrating. Nutritional Supplements Certain vitamins and minerals such as Vitamin A, C, E and Zinc, along with essential fatty acid, Omega 3, may help improve the appearance of the skin and minimize the eruption of acne. These can be found naturally in the foods we
eat or supplemented if your teen has not got a well-balanced diet.
NATURAL REMEDIES
There are some natural remedies using low-cost household items that really from my experience can help improve and heal acne breakouts. Here are a few… A mixture of Apple Cider vinegar and filtered water applied to the affected areas can help balance the PH level, and prevent acne causing bacteria from breeding on the skin. Mix 1one part apple cider with 10 parts water and apply gently with cotton wool to the skin. Add a few drops of milk to some ground nutmeg to form a paste, apply to the spots and leave on for one to two hours before rinsing away.
PROTECT AGAINST SUN
It may seem like tan masks acne, but it is only temporary. A tan may worsen your acne, not improve it. Tanning also causes damage to skin that will eventually lead to wrinkles and increase your risk of skin cancer. Why not try a self-tan likd Tan Organics , Eco Sonya Cacao Tan or Lavera Self-Tanning lotion
BE PATIENT!
What may seem the normal way of things to us, can be viewed as a tragedy to a teenager. What an adolescent needs most is an understanding parent who remembers what it is like to be in their shoes.
DID YOU KNOW ?
During the day your skin produces extra oil to protect itself. During the night the skin breathes to rid itself of waste, as well as repair any damage caused during the day

50th anniversary of St. Brendan’s College All Ireland football victory The Hogan cup is the most-prestigious award in secondary school level Gaelic Fooball. Named after Brother Thomas Hogan, brother of GAA founder Michael Hogan, the cup is presented to the winners of the All Ireland secondary schools senior A football championship. It was first presented in 1946 (but was not presented between 1949 to 1956) the most-successful Kerry college in the competition is St Brendan’s College Killarney. Their most-recent success was in backto-back victories in 2016 and 2017 when the likes of current county star David Clifford experienced playing in Croke Park for the first time.
The school also won the title in 1992 but their first win came in 1969 when the team beat St Mary’s of Galway on a score-line of 1-13 to 3-3. It was only the school’s second appearance in an All Ireland final having narrowly lost the 1963 decider to St Mel’s of Longford on score-line of 1-6 to 2-2. Last Saturday night the victorious 1969 squad held a 50th anniversary reunion at The Killarney Avenue Hotel. Under the stewardship of trainer Fr James Linnane the school team was a stepping stone towards the mighty Kerry football team of the 1970s.
Captain on day was one John O’Keefe who was actually an unused sub the flowing September when Kerry defeated Offaly to record the Kingdom’s 21st All Ireland title. He had to wait another 12 months for his first All-Ireland appearance, helping Kerry to overcome Meath on the that occasion. His cousin Ger O’Keeffe also played for the ‘Sem’ that day but had to wait until 1973 begore he broke into the county ranks. He was a member of the famous four-in-row team from 1979 to 1981. His
brother Tony was one of the backbones of the Kerry County board for many years and served as county secretary for 17 years between 1985 and 2002. When he stepped-down he was given a standing ovation by other delegates at the county convention. Paudie Lynch was another member of that famous school team to make to the top. His first taste of Senior success came in 1975, when Mick O' Dwyer’s young guns overwhelmed a fancied Dublin team.

GARDEN MAGIC
Gardening - By Debby Looney

Sweet chestnut is a very attractive tree Last week I wrote about bare rooted hedging, and that this is a perfect time of the year to plant it. The same goes for trees – bare rooted trees are available soon, that is, they are not grown in pots, and therefore, much more cost effective. There are trees available for every type of garden, and add fantastic structure and interest to any garden. Today I want to focus on large trees, which would really only be suitable for a large rural garden. A tree which is often overlooked is the Lime tree, or Tilia cordata. They can grow 20m and more. Lime trees are easily recognised by their lime green round, tipped leaves, smooth, reddish brown stems and sweetly scented flowers. The flowers, incidentally, are an excellent food source for bees and pollinators. They are a hardy tree, standing up to gales and cold. Sweet chestnut, or Castanea sativa, is another very attractive, fast growing tree. It can reach heights of 35m. It is not a native tree, being originally from Southern Europe, it was brought to our island via the Romans. It is recognisable by it’s purplish bark and long, serrated, glossy leaves. Catkins appear in the spring, followed by fruits encased in a soft, prickly shell. The chestnuts are used in many recipes, especially stuffings. The catkins/flowers are, again, loved by pollinators. The Sweet Chestnut is very different to the Horse Chestnut, which is also a beautiful, stately tree. The horse chestnut, or Aesculus hippocastanum, can grow to over 40m, with a very recognisable dome shaped crown and palmate, rough leaves. The leaves, when they fall, leave a horseshoe shaped scar, which is probably where the name comes from. We are all familiar with the conkers which appear in the Autumn, but the flowers which precede these are
also welcome food for bees. Horse chestnuts can be affected by cold winds in the spring, damaging their leaves. It does not harm the tree, but they are slow to recover in the same year, and can be a bit sad looking in windy years! Wild cherry, or Prunus avium, is one of my favourite large trees. It grows to about 30m and is covered with clusters of white flowers in spring. In the autumn, the foliage turns a brilliant red with purple. A tree most gardens can take, as the crown does not grow too wide. Native Oak trees, Quercus robur, are a slow but rewarding tree to grow. They start producing acorns when they are around 40 years old. These grow on short stems. Or peduncles, giving it it’s other common name, pedunculate oak. This tree is easily confused with the sessile oak, which bears it’s acorns directly on twigs. Both trees are worth planting, both for biodiversity and for the next generation(s) to enjoy. When planting your tree, dig a square hole, twice as deep as you need it. Backfill half with a mixture of compost and soil, so as to give the roots a good start. It is easiest to put a stake in at this point, as you will not have the tree in the way of the job! If you live in a relatively sheltered area, or if the tree is very young, a whip, as they are called, there is no need to stake it, however, most damage is done to newly planted trees by wind rock. As the plant rocks in the wind, the roots are damaged, sometimes beyond repair. Therefore it is best to err on the side of caution. Sometimes, using two stakes is best, one either side of the tree. It is very important to make sure the bark is not rubbing against the stake, as this will cause damage to the tree, impairing growth, and creating a site for disease to enter.
FRIENDS: Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce President, Paul Sherry (centre), signs the friendship pact with the Mayor of Schlebusch, Bernhard Marewski (left) and Matthias Hermann of the Friends of Killarney in Leverkusen.
Killarney has a new best friend in Germany
KILLARNEY hopes to forge strong new cultural, tourism and business links with a busy area in Germany after agreeing to what is being described as a new “town friendship” with Schlebusch-Leverkusen. Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce President Paul Sherry was the VIP guest at the annual Schlebusch festival at which a friendship pact was agreed and an official scroll signed by the Mayor of Schlebusch, Bernhard Marewski. Schlebusch has a population of 26,000 people, with 160,000 in the greater Leverkusen area, and it is hoped that the already great relationship can be enhanced going forward for the benefit of both towns. The friendship arose from a visit by a party from Schlebusch to the St Patrick’s Day celebrations in Killarney in 2019 and they will be returning again for the March 17 festival in 2021. That group was led by Matthias Hermann, Erin Caraideann and the Irish Friends in Leverkusen and they fell in love with the town and its people. In addition, another group of 19 people will visit Killarney next March and they are looking forward to meeting up with
great friends already made. Paul Sherry said Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce was delighted to accept the invitation to attend the festival in Germany and he is confident it will lead to a very positive and lasting relationship. “The hospitality shown and the warmth of the people of Schlebusch was amazing and their interest in all things Irish, and especially Killarney, was heart-warming,” said Mr Sherry. During his visit to the two-day festival, Mr Sherry also met with Paul Cahill who is a key part of the Global Team in the Irish Business Network and they discussed how links can be built between Killarney and the culture-rich German town. The chamber president also presented Mayor Bernhard Marewski with a book entitled Beautiful Killarney which features some stunning images of the beauty of the area.

How to remove a president from office: Impeachment procedure It’s up to the Senate to decide whether to force a president from office by holding a trial. The Senate serves as the jury, the House as the prosecutors, the president’s lawyers as the defense, and the chief justice of the United States as the judge. This is where things get procedurally dicey since the Constitution does not lay out any rules dictating how the court is supposed to be
run. The Senate therefore gets to decide if and how many witnesses can be used, whether the depositions should be live, the length of the trial, and other procedural matters—a challenging and potentially dubious task, given that the Senate also decides the outcome of the trial. After the trial proceedings conclude, the Senate then votes on each article of impeachment. Removing the president requires
a two-thirds majority on one or more of the articles or charges. Such a move would be unprecedented in American history. In Trump’s case, obtaining a twothirds majority vote would be an even taller order with Republicans in control of the Senate. There are now 53 Republicans, 45 Democrats, and two left-leaning Independents in the Senate, so at least 20 Republicans would need to defect to depose Trump.

German Ambassador on visit to Kerry Strengthening the social, business and economic links between County Kerry and Germany was central to a visit on Tuesday to Tralee by the German Ambassador to Ireland and the chief executive of the German-Irish Chamber of Commerce. Ambassador Deike Potzel was welcomed to the offices of Kerry County Council and also met with a number of local industry, business and tourism representatives. The ambassador and her colleagues met with the Chief Executive of Kerry County Council, Moira Murrell, the Acting Mayor of Tralee, Cllr Terry O’Brien, and representatives of the council’s Economic Development Unit. “Kerry and Germany are closely connected thanks to direct flights to and from Frankfurt and Berlin and the German tourism market is hugely important to the county. Many German companies and industries have deep roots in Kerry and that is critical to our economic de-
velopment as a county. I look forward to the enhancement of existing and new links between Germany and Kerry into the future,” said Cllr O’Brien. During the visit, the German-Irish Chamber of Industry and Commerce and Tralee Chamber Alliance signed a Certificate of Partnership to further strengthen economic and business links between Tralee and Germany. “Tralee Chamber Alliance and the German Irish Chamber of Industry and Commerce are coming together to begin a journey that will develop even stronger relations between German businesses and Kerry businesses, working together we will enable tourism and industry to have a support resource that will assist them in both locations to grow and expand into the future,” added Chief Executive of the Tralee Chamber Alliance, Ken Tobin. Ambassador Potzel also visited the Borg Warner plant in Tralee and met with other industry leaders and representatives in the county.
Repair plan for roads in Killarney National Park Kerry County Council has confirmed that repair work to roads within the national park will be undertaken in the next few weeks. There were concerns that some of the roads, as used by jarvies had fallen in to disrepair. Some of the roads are actually owned by the National Parks and Wildlife Services and not Kerry County Council but the two
bodies have a long-term plan in place to repair roads in the park. “However in the immediate term it has been agreed that repair works will be carried out by Kerry County Council on behalf of the NPWS,” said a council spokesperson on Thursday. “In relation to the roads at Knockreer funding has been allocated to do a repair job and the contractor will be on site in the coming days..”
World Dancing Championship under investigation by watchdog The 2020 World Irish Dancing Championships is under investigation from the Irish Competition Authority. The authority is investigating price fixing at Dublin Hotels ahead of the April 5 to 20 event. It has emerged that prices at the hotel commissioned by An Coimisiun le Rinci Gaelacha, the organisers of the world championships, were more-expensive that private bookings made at the same hotel for the same period. There are additional concerns that at-
tendees who do not opt to stay in the designated hotel block will be subject to a daily 'facility fee'' of €50 per person when entering the event at the Dublin Convention Centre, which comes in addition to the daily 'door fee' all attendees are subject to. New York-based on-line newspaper Irish Central reported that US-based Irish dance teachers have lodged a formal complaint to An Coimisiun le Rinci Gaelacha and that complaint has attracted the attention of the Irish Competition Authority.

Skincare with ‘Sothys ‘ Do you long for healthy, glowing skin? Do you wish you could go out without make up? Are you embarrassed about you skin? Do you suffer from red patches or spots (in your 30’s) ? Do you have a skincare routine ? If not you should and if you have, it’s time to improve it. A few simple steps can improve your skin 110%. Drinking eight large glasses of water is a great start and cost nothing. Water hydrates from the inside out. Creams have improved and continue to improve but can still only do so much. Hydrate the skin with water and you will make a huge difference. I listen to my clients telling me different things about all the different creams they have tried and are recommended but the one thing I hear most the lack of use. If you don’t apply the products consistently they won’t work. It’s like getting an antibiotic and not finished it. It won’t work. Start a good skin routine, create the habit and you will start to see your skin improve. It’s really important to double cleanse and tone the skin at night as our skin repairs and heals while we sleep. I always suggest doing it at 6 or 7 pm in the evening before you get too tired and adding a little extra night cream just be-

fore hopping into bed. Once a week, (best to pick the same day) do a deep clean with an exfoliator, this should take an extra 10 mins, and maybe add a mask to suit your skin type. Serums are a great way to get results fast. Once you start to see the results you will want to keep going. Night creams are extremely strong Sothy’s Detox overnight cream gives amazing results with little effort. It’s infused with AHAs which help to exfoliate while you sleep, which allows the hyaluronic acid for hydration and Vit. C for detox and brightening effect get to work on the deeper layers. The main reason we use exfoliations is to remove the dead cells, instead of using the creams to hydrate them, it can go straight to where it’s needed the lower levels of the skin with nothing blocking it. Another thing to remember is that creams go off, so always use within 2 years.

WELCOME Welcome to September's home and living, Our little Indian summer last week was amazing helping us to move into winter a little easier after the washout that was August. This month we are looking at making our homes cozy for winter. Whether you love or hate the winter season, personally its my favourite. We all love cosing up in front of a fire or finding a good book or getting lost in Pinterest for a few hours. Making some space for this in your home with a reading nook or just some extra cushions for your sofa can make all the difference in how you feel about winter. If your ask my husband what my favourite things are he will say with out thinking “baskets towels and candles!” so it probably goes someway to explaining why I love winter, I'm also more of a fan of winter clothes I have way too many winter coats. But winter to me is more about family, theres nothing nicer on a rainy Sunday than lighting a fire and watching a movie, with the compulsory popcorn it's worth the half hour discussion (argument) on which film to watch and with two boys its rarely a chickflick. Winter is definitely about appreciating the little things and that's where Hygge comes into it own. Enjoy getting winter-ready. COSY UP for winter
We've all enjoyed our little Indian summer, but its back to the jumpers and boots again! Personally, I love winter. I do love the sun, but can't wait to get back to winter coats and boots, and cosy nights in front of the fire!
If you're like me and love winter or are part of the majority and its your least favourite season we have some genius ideas to make your home a sanctuary during the bleakest months. 1. Add splashes of colour. Irish interiors cry out for colour as our light can be grey even during the summer and more so in winter. Our interiors need some vibrant colour to lift our mood. You don't have to go out and paint all the walls bright pink! Brightly patterned cushions, a throw or some art can instantly brighten your space even without the sun. 2. C omfortable cushions. It's not just about what your cushions look like, it's whats inside which can determine how comfortable they are going to be to curl up with use good quality inserts. Personally I love feather as its warm and envelops you. If you prefer a structured look to your cushions go a size bigger for the insert, as this will help the cushion keep its shape.
3. O utside in. Just because your garden has gone into hiatus doesn't mean you cant have some green to look at. A few easy-care house plants can instantly add vibrancy to your home. One study even suggests that having indoor plants can reduce psychological stress, but I think this is only true if you have green fingers! If not there are some great faux versions out there at the moment. 4. Light a fire, but only if you have a fireplace! With new easily installed gas and electric fires even homes without a chimney can have the benefit of a warming fire. 5. Add more lighting. Instead of overhead lights add some lamps. A freestanding lamp in the corner of a room, or table lamps dotted around, add atmosphere and coziness to your home. 6. The most flattering light of all is candle light, I’m a huge fan of candles along with adding ambiance to
a room. If you choose your favourite scented candle it lifts your mood. Go for a good soy candle with natural oils. 7. Create a reading nook. Carve out a specific space for some reading time, and better still make it a technology free space! We are all guilty of reaching for our phone instead of a book these days so a space which is technology free is a great idea. 8. Seasonal storage. If you don't like a layered or cluttered look set aside a basket to hold some cushions and throws. This will keep you rooms looking stylish, but comfort close at hand. 9. A footstool. We've seen them in every magazine but we rarely use these for what the name suggest. If your home is neutral or even if it's not, footstools are a great way to add colour and texture and warmth for those winter months. Don't forget to kick your shoes off and use it!
CREATE A COZY
READING NOOK
Now that we all have computers in our hands 24/7, we rarely take the time to sit down in a sunny little corner, sip a cup of tea, and crack the spine on a good book. But isn’t it a nice thought? Creating our very own reading nook is a simple idea but helps us find a space where maybe we think twice about picking up the phone. What you need: 1. First is a chair, any chair will work once is comfortable, fits in the space and works with the aesthetic of your home, be that modern or traditional or any style in between. 2. A footstool. There are a huge amount of them out there, some very reasonable options. Remember it doesn't have to match your chair, just be a
good height for your feet to rest comfortably. 3. Lighting, I love a slim floor standing lamp but if you have room for a side table a table lamp will work as well. It's just a matter of personal choice and what fits in your space. 4. Side table. Think out side the box or even a box will do! A footstool or a small round table is perfect for a corner space. It doesn't take up a lot of space, all you need is room for your book/Kindle and a warm drink.

hygge
[hue-gah]
Hygge ( hue-gah) is a Danish and Norwegian word for a mood of coziness and comfortable conviviality with feelings of wellness and contentment. This Danish concept cannot be translated to one single word but encompasses a feeling of cosy contentment and well-being through enjoying the simple things in life. On a snow day, you've experienced hygge without even knowing it. We've all heard of Hygge and it sounds like a lovely concept, but have we ever really used it in our everyday lives? Hygge is not about buying candles and throws, (but I do love an excuse to buy a candle). It is about being more thoughtful in our everyday lives. We all have a little FOMO (fear of missing out) and social media feeds this, are we happy just being? Creating a cosy environment in our
homes and taking a break to enjoy it once in a while recharging our batteries, helps your mind body and soul. Your home and its contents are about you not Pinterest, a magazine, or what someone on Instagram got gifted! Use these to figure out your taste, but invest in what you like, not a trend. We all need a space that's good for our soul and not anybody else's.

The two hardest parts of losing weight You may be shocked to hear this, but the two most challenging most aspects of losing weight and getting healthy have nothing to do with nutrition and working out. You may be thinking, ‘Wait, aren’t those the only two aspects of losing weight?’ Yes, eating correctly and staying active are the actions you need to take to reach your goals, but they are not the most challenging part. The most challenging parts are actually: 1. Thinking that you do not have to change your habits 2. Thinking that it will happen fast In essence, the most challenging parts
have nothing to do with the actions that you take, but more to do with how you think about the entire process. Anyone can start eating healthy and start working out, but the mindset and expectations that you go into it with with matter. Where most people fail is doing it for the long term-months and years of implementing healthy habits. Be honest with yourself before starting the process. Consider the fact that your current habits got you to where you are and it took you years to get there. When you can accept that you will have to change your current habits to reach your goals and that it will take time, you will be on the path to success.
Killarney retains nighttime purple flag status Killarney is celebrating the news that it has successfully retained the prestigious Purple Flag, an accreditation for its evening and night-time economy, having submitted a detailed Interim Renewal Application in June 2019. This is a ‘gold standard’ for towns and cities in the early evening and at night from 5pm to 5am. Like Blue Flags for beaches, towns that meet the stringent criteria can proudly fly the flag. Killarney is one of 70 towns and cities across the UK and Ireland who have been awarded with the Purple Flag status. This accreditation recognises Killarney as an ‘area of excellence’, especially in the evening economy, offering the highest quality in shopping, dining, pubs, culture and entertainment. Frank Doran: “We are delighted that Killarney has retained its Purple Flag status
and this success can be attributed to the quality and commitment of the working group and the businesses in Killarney town who operate in the night-time economy,” said Frank Doran Killarney Purple Flag Committee Chairman. “In order to retain the Purple Flag everyone in Killarney must continue our work on an every-day basis with all evening and night-time businesses in order to continue to develop our entertainment, food and hospitality offering in Killarney. “Killarney will be subject to external assessment again in 2020 and we look forward to working with local businesses and key stakeholders to help promote the area and Purple Flag to the widest possible audience.” Killarney will celebrate its success during the upcoming Purple Flag Weekend which is to take place in October. Details to be confirmed in the very near future.
BEST IN THE LAND: Teachers and their nominators gathered at the Teachers Inspire shortlist announcement
Rathmore teacher on Teachers Inspire shortlist Jerh O’Donoghue, now retired, who was a teacher at Sliabh Luachra Secondary School in Rathmore, Co. Kerry (formerly St. Mary’s Secondary School) has been named on the shortlist for the inaugural Teachers Inspire Ireland initiative. The initiative, which is focused on highlighting the enormous contribution made by teachers in Irish society, was launched by Dublin City University (DCU) earlier this year, with the support of businessman and philanthropist Dermot Desmond. Over May and June, DCU called for members of the public to share their personal stories of how a teacher transformed their lives and / or their community. Twenty shortlisted teachers – five from each province – have been shortlisted from over 400 entries received from every corner of Ireland. None of the teachers knew they were nominated in advance. Mr. O’Donoghue was nominated by his former student Joan Cronin. Jerh was a founder of the Social Action Group in Rathmore, which – according to Joan – over the last 45 years “has transformed the rural community to a vibrant, social active place for young and old”.
Announcing the shortlist at DCU earlier this week, Professor Brian MacCraith, President of DCU, said: “The entries submitted to Teachers Inspire Ireland demonstrate just how significant a role teachers play in Irish life. “We received stories about teachers dealing in an inspirational way with major societal challenges. We received stories of teachers who have played – and continue to play – a key part in helping individuals and whole communities adapt to change. “The nominations highlighted teachers dealing with issues such as homelessness, mental health, immigration, unplanned pregnancies, gender identity support, community regeneration, and climate change. They were submitted by schoolchildren, parents, and people whose schooldays are long behind them but who remember their teachers with great fondness and gratitude.”

Killarney Salmon & Trout Angling Club RESULTS: Last Sunday the club fished the annual competition on Lough Lein with a great turn out of members .Conditions looked ideal but fishing was a tough battle in most areas of the lake with anglers reporting that fish were hard earned on the day. The top five anglers on the day were as follows: 1 Anthony Griffin, 2 Paul Lawton, 3 Steve Campbell, 4 Mick Linehan, 5 Tom Dennehy. Heaviest Trout fell to the rod of Malcolm O’Brien. The winning Sponsor Team on the day was Cronins Restaurant consisting of Tom Dennehy, Anthony Griffin, Steve Campbell. The winning club team was made up of DJ O’Riordan, Diarmuid Lenihan, Mick Lenihan, Anthony Griffin. The Paddy Kelly Cup for the Best Boat on the day went to Tom Dennehy and Aidan O’Callaghan. The presentation of the cups etc will take place on Saturday night the 2nd of November in the International Hotel. The present situation regarding angler of the year is a closely fought battle between Mick Lenihan and Anthony Griffin with the final dice to be rolled in our remaining competition, fishing on Lough Lein for the Tom Bambury Memorial Trophy. This competition is a great opportunity for all members to not only enjoy their sport but also contribute to St Francis School in Beaufort, which is a fantastic establishment and a great asset to all in Munster. KENMARE MOTORCYCLE REUNION: Overlanders crew on a scouting trip to South Kerry earlier this year.
Plans for Kenmare motorcycle reunion festival are revealed Kenmare is set to get its own motorcycle festival in November. Following on from the highly successful Ireland BikeFest Killarney, which takes place annually over the June Bank Holiday weekend, the south Kerry town is set to host a similar low key event on November 16 and 17. Billed as the very first Overlanders reunion weekend, the two-day gathering is organised by Derek and David Rynhart from Gorey. They operate an international motorcycle transport firm called Overlanders.ie where they transport motorcycles to far flung corners of the world. Their service means that fans can spend more time exploring foreign countries instead of losing time getting to and from their chosen destination. “We have been touring by motorcycle for the past eight years and between us have clocked up over 250,000 kilometres
across 30 countries,” said Derek. “As we began to travel further away from Ireland we found we were spending more and more time on motorways just getting to and from our destination. This was both time consuming and expensive, and at the end of every tour we asked the same question: ‘Where can we find a company to transport our motorcycles for us?’, hence, Overlands was established.” They have organised the Kenmare reunion so motorcyclists can meet again and share stories of their adventures. “This is an opportunity to meet up with all those motorcycling friends we made along the road who we promised to ‘stay in touch’ with,” Derek added. “It is an opportunity to explore some of the most beautiful and lesser known areas of South West Ireland.” The event, which will be based in the Kenmare Bay Hotel.

DISCUSSION: Colin O’Donoghue with Sean McHugh at last week’s Rally Academy event. Photo by Motorsport Ireland
The third Motorsport Ireland Junior Academy Day took place in County Galway last week. Nominees for this year’s young rally driver of the year award were given advice on many aspects of motorsport career development including fitness, media training, pacenote making mental health fitness. O’Donoghue is the only Kerry driver in the group and, depending on results in next month’s Fastnet Rally, could win the National Rally Championship junior title. “It was an action packed day once again with a driving experience in a Hyundai i20 R5, accompanied by guest driver and former Billy Colman winner Callum Devine, it was great to hear feedback and what he had to offer on car setup,” Colin told the Killarney Advertiser. “The information and experience I gained from these talks and activities were very beneficial to me. I’m very grateful to be a part of this program. Well done to everyone that was involved and special thanks to John Coyne and Sean McHugh for making this day happen.”

Because you’re always thought about in such a special way, Because you always did so much to brighten up each day.
Time cannot steal the treasures, That we carry in our hearts, Nor ever dim the shining thought, Our cherished past imparts...
And because you cared for others, Selflessly your whole life through, I say a little prayer each day, Especially for you.
And memories of the ones we’ve loved, Still cast their gentle glow, To grace our days and light our paths, Wherever we may go.
That heaven will protect you, And will somehow let you know, That, Nan, you meant so much to me, And that I miss you so much.
Never forgotten and forever loved your loving Wife Mairead ,children Anna and John.
It’s lonely here without you, We miss you more each day, For life is not the same to us, Since you were called away. To your resting place we visit, But no one knows the heartache, When we turn and leave you there, It broke our hearts to lose you. But you didn’t go alone, For part of us went with you, The day God called you home. Always in our prayers, Mom and Dad. No matter how we start the day, No matter what we do, No morning starts, No evening ends, Without a thought of you, Time passes, memories stay, Quietly remembered everyday. Loved and missed always, Tommy, June, Stephen, Clodagh and Niamh. xxx We hold you close within our hearts and there you shall remain, To walk with us throughout our lives until we meet again.
Love forever and always your Grandchildren
There is always a face before me, A voice I would love to hear, A smile I will always remember, Of a brother I loved so dear, Deep n my heart lies a picture, More precious than silver and gold, It’s a picture of your brother, Whose memory will never grown old.

Always remembered by your loving family.
PRAYER TO ST. JOSEPH O St. Joseph, whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt before the throne of God, I place in you all my interest and desires. O St. Joseph, do assist me by your powerful intercession, and obtain for me from your divine Son all spiritual blessings, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. So that, having engaged here below your heavenly power, I may offer my thanksgiving and homage to the most loving of Fathers. O, St. Joseph, I never weary contemplating you, and Jesus asleep in our arms; I dare not approach while He reposes near your heart. Press Him in my name and kiss His fine head for me and ask Him to return the kiss when I draw my dying breath. St. Joseph, Patron of departing souls pray for me. This prayer was found in the fiftieth year of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. In 1505 it was sent from the Pope to Emperor Charles when he was going into battle. Who ever shall read this prayer or hear it or keep it about themselves, shall never die a sudden death, or be drowned, nor shall be burned in any fire or shall be overpowered in battle. Say for nine mornings for anything you desire. It has never been known to fail, so be sure you really want what you ask for. In thanks for request granted. L.O.R

Meet Aaron Jackson, the new American who’s hoping to lead the Lakers to the Super League Hi Aaron. Welcome to Killarney. Thank you. You arrived two weeks ago. What are your impressions of the town so far? I love it. I think it’s the perfect size. It’s not too big, it’s not too small, and there’s always stuff to do. Have the people been welcoming? Oh yeah, for sure. Everybody I’ve talked to has started off with, “Welcome to Killarney, we’re glad to have you here”. They’ve just embraced me with open arms so that’s been real comforting. It’s not easy being away from your family, in a different time zone, so it feels good to come somewhere and feel welcome. When did you first hear about Killarney and the Scotts Lakers’ interest in you? End of the summer. I went to a combine in Orlando, Florida and Coach Shane (McCarthy) was there. I played really well. Going into it he said I wasn’t really on their radar or anything. It was pretty humbling, and pretty cool to finally get some good luck in that area. Were you worried at any stage that you wouldn’t find a team? Yeah because there are so many people in the States trying to get over and play

27.09.2019 professional basketball overseas somewhere. It’s tough. In the back of your mind you always have that (doubt) but you have to go into every game, every day, with confidence. I never really gave up on myself no matter what happened. I just kept working and kept getting better, and now I’m here. Did it ever cross your mind that you’d end up in Ireland? Oh nah, never! But it’s pretty cool that I did. You’re a 6’6” guard. How would you describe yourself as a player? I’m a multiple threat guy. I can shoot it

to around my city. Our coaches took basketball real serious. Then I played with two very good, high-level teams in college in Akron and East Carolina University.
What part of the States are you from? I grew up in Columbus, Ohio, born and raised. Big Ohio State football fan. Go Bucks.
What did you major in? I was in Sport Marketing for my undergrad and for grad school I was in Student Affairs and Higher Education.
Did you always want to be a basketballer? For sure. I used to play a couple other sports too. According to my dad, my best sport was baseball. I played pitcher and centre field. I played football as well, as a quarter back, but that was just too risky for me.
You must have come up against some top players in your time. Any standout names? Oh yeah. I’ve played against a little bit of everybody. Josh Hart (New Orleans Pelicans), Andrew Wiggins (Minnesota Timberwolves), Julius Randle (New York Knicks), Jabari Parker (Atlanta Hawks)… Like I said, Caris LeVert – he was actually in my league in high school so I played him twice a year. Jae'Sean Tate, one my best friends, he ended up going to Ohio State and he plays for the Sydney Kings in Australia. And my high school teammate, Javon Bess, plays with the Pelicans. So I was blessed to play against a lot of very good players who helped to shape my game.
Which players did you admire growing up? Basketball is real big in my city so I had the opportunity to see guys like Jared Sullinger (ex-Boston Celtics) play, Trey Burke (Philadelphia 76ers), Caris LeVert (Brooklyn Nets)… And I’ve had the opportunity to play with those guys and come up with them, so I got to learn a lot from some really talented players. I watched a lot of LeBron too, obviously, but D. Wade was a close second. I used to love me some D. Wade. But I wasn’t as athletic as him so I couldn’t really model my game after his. As I got older I was able to figure out who I could really model my game on and I fell in love with Klay Thompson. We have very similar body types and very similar athleticism. Are you a Cleveland Cavaliers fan? Kinda. I’m just a LeBron fan really. Wherever he goes… Tell me about your school career. I went to Gahanna Lincoln High School. It was a real powerhouse for a public high school - one of the best to go
You’re coming from a very high standard in America. What have you made of your Lakers teammates so far? I like them. I like playing with them. I think Brian (O’Neill) is really, really good. He can shoot really well. Carlton Cuff is a great leader. Andrew (Fitzgerald) is in a hell of a shape for a 37-year-old guy! I haven’t got to see Mark (Greene) play yet. I love Séamus (Brosnan), he can shoot the ball. Toby (Christensen) and Victor (Martínez) have great size. They’re versatile guys who can stretch it out for us. It’s been fun trying to gel and get to know their games as well. How is training going? Are you enjoying it? I am. We haven’t really had a full prac-

tice yet with everybody – Mark has been injured and people are still playing football – which kind of showed in our first game (a 92-85 defeat to the Limerick Celtics). But I’m really not worried because I know that once we all gel together, we’ll be fine. Have you noticed a difference in the style of play? It’s a lot more physical here. That’s the biggest difference. I physically felt that Sunday morning when I woke up. I was just like, “Uh! Goodness, gracious! I need to take a day off!” What are your goals for this season, both personally and as a team? Really, personally, I just want to try and be a pioneer for this club and to get the Lakers into the Super League. That’s really my biggest goal. I see all of the other Super League teams and I think that with the size of our club, we should be able to do the same thing. That’s the biggest thing that’s been on my mind: trying to play well enough to lead the team to promotion. Everybody has just been so nice here so I feel like they deserve that. Killarney deserves a Super League team. Tomorrow night you’ll play your first home game at the Auracle. Are you looking forward to it? I can’t wait. It should be fun. The pre-season game against Tralee was fun, I had a real nice time, so I can only imagine what the first official game is going to be like. The Scotts Lakers take on IT Carlow in the Killarney Sports Centre at 7.30pm tomorrow (Saturday) evening. Stay tuned to the Killarney Advertiser and follow @AdamMoynihan on Twitter for all the latest Lakers news, interviews and video highlights.

New basketball campaign launched at Scotts Hotel National League basketball returns to Killarney this weekend and the new campaign for the Scotts Lakers was launched in Scotts Hotel, Killarney on Monday night. | By Eamonn Keogh Speaking at the event, the Lakers’ National League Committee Chairman Aidan Quirke said that the ultimate ambition for the club is to gain promotion to the Super League. St Paul's has been growing at a tremendous rate in recent years, he added, and the club is now catering for over 400 juvenile members. Aidan also thanked Scotts Hotel for their role as the main team sponsor as well as Killarney Credit Union, Tricel and everyone else who supports the team financially. Scotts Hotel Managing Director Maurice O'Donoghue said they were delighted to be associated with St Paul's again this season and recalled the long association that the O’Donoghue family and the Gleneagle Group have had with Killarney basketball since 1979. New head coach Shane McCarthy welcomed the club’s new foreign signings Aaron Jackson, Toby Christensen, and Victor Martínez. He said he was looking forward to an exciting and competitive season and added that the club is heading in the right direction with its huge juvenile membership. He also expressed his belief that the Lakers have the potential to progress to the Super League.
MAYOR OF KILLARNEY
In his speech, Mayor of Killarney Cllr
Michael Gleeson recalled that the game of basketball was originally created by Dr James Naismith in December 1891 in Springfield, Massachusetts, and the first public basketball game was played there in March 1892. Due to the strong links of Springfield, Massachusetts with several Irish immigrants of Kerry descent, Mr Gleeson said it was quite possible that those who played in the first and early matches had Kerry connections. He wished the Scotts Lakers players every success and reminded them that they not only represent their club but were also ambassadors for Killarney on the national stage. Mayor of Kerry Cllr Niall Kelleher praised the players, management and committee and the great work being done at juvenile level. He said that the tremendous commitment by all club coaches passing on their knowledge and skills to the next generation of young players has to be admired. He told the Scotts Lakers players to enjoy the season and while it may be challenging, it could also be very rewarding. Cllr Niall Botty O'Callaghan spoke fondly about his own love of basketball and the great and proud history of the game in Killarney. He praised the officers, players and coaches for their dedication and the O'Donoghue family for their continued support. He said that it was impor-

Cllr O'Callaghan pledged his full support to campaign and turn this dream into a reality while he is on the council. LIMERICK The opening game of the new season didn’t go according to plan for the Scotts Lakers in St Munchin’s College last Saturday night as they were outgunned by the Limerick Celtics. The Lakers lined out without Mark
Greene, Séamus Brosnan and Cian Clernon for this match while Carlton Cuff had to depart the action during the second quarter due to injury. With limited resources, the Killarney side were always up against it and trailed 39-
29 at half-time. Limerick Celtics enjoyed a 16-point lead entering the final quarter and actually opened up a 23-point advantage at one stage. Scotts Lakers battled back with a late rally and clawed it back to a three-point game with 43 seconds remaining. However, Limerick held on to win by seven points in the end with their fourteen three-pointers a significant factor. Despite four three-pointers from the impressive Brian O'Neill, Scotts Lakers struggled from three-point range, con-
Christensen from Denmark and Spaniard Victor Martínez . Team captains are Mark Greene and Carlton Cuff and the rest of the squad includes Andrew Fitzgerald, Séamus Brosnan, Brian O’Neill, Cian Clernon, Keith O’Grady, Billy Wiseman, Jamie O’Sullivan, Keelin Houlihan, Jack Corridan and Daniel Carroll. Head coach is Shane McCarthy assisted by John Brosnan while Mike Pierce is team manager.
verting eight from 26 attempts. They also missed a costly 14 points from the free throw line. Much improvement will be expected from the Lakers in the coming weeks and Mark Greene is expected to make a welcome return from injury this weekend, while the return of Séamus Brosnan will also be a big boost.
LIMERICK CELTICS: (top scorers) Carlos Hortelano (30), Davide Bellinzona (17), Kevin Oberweiser (14), Egidijus Baksys (14). SCOTTS LAKERS: Aaron Jackson (33), Toby Christensen (14), Brian O'Neill (14), Victor Martínez (13), Andrew Fitzgerald (8), Carlton Cuff (3), Keelin Houlihan, Jamie O’Sullivan, Jack Corridan and Keith O’Grady.

Athletic spot on in FAI Junior Cup thriller FAI JUNIOR CUP (ROUND 2) ___________________________________________________________________________
Killarney Athletic 2 | Abbeyfeale United 2 (ATHLETIC WON 3-1 ON PENS) WOODLAWN GAFFER: Diarmuid O'Carroll has taken over from Darren O'Dea at Fir Park. Pic: Motherwell FC.
O’Carroll to manage Motherwell U18s Former Killarney Athletic and Glasgow Celtic striker Diarmuid O’Carroll has been appointed manager of Motherwell FC’s U18 team. O’Carroll, a native of Ross Road in Killarney, replaces outgoing manager and fellow Irishman Darren O’Dea who left for Celtic two weeks ago. Coincidentally, O’Carroll and O’Dea are close friends having played alongside one another for Ireland and Home Farm underage before both signing for Celtic in 2003. After a storied pro career that brought him to Morecombe in England, Ross County and Airdrie in Scotland, Valur in Iceland and Glenavon, Cliftonville and Crusaders in Northern Ireland, the Kerryman retired from playing football in 2016 to focus on coaching. He began his coaching education with the IFA and, after a brief stint back on the playing field with Dungannon Swifts, he managed the Glentoran Women’s team earlier this year. He was most recent-
ly employed as Director of Coaching at Downtown Las Vegas Soccer Club. O’Carroll is currently waiting to start his UEFA Pro Licence course. “I’m really happy to be at Motherwell,” O’Carroll said. “I’m joining a great coaching staff and I’m looking forward to the challenge. “Once the opportunity arose, I knew it was one I wanted to take. This club has an exceptional pedigree of developing young talent, and I hope to play my part in helping the next generation come through.” Motherwell manager Stephen Robinson said that O’Carroll is an “excellent addition” to the team at Fir Park. “We are very much looking forward to working with him. We conducted a robust process with the appointment, which included a practical session on the park with our players, and we are excited by what he can bring to the group.” Motherwell’s first team have had a largely positive start to the season and are currently fourth in the Scottish Premiership.
Killarney Athletic are in the hat for Round 3 of the FAI Junior Cup after they pulled off an upset against Limerick Desmond League kingpins Abbeyfeale United on Sunday. The Blues trailed 2-0 inside the first 15 minutes but well-taken goals by Danny Healy and Ryan O’Carroll forced the tie into extra time. With neither side able to find a winner in the additional 30 minutes, a penalty shootout was required and the hosts prevailed thanks to confident strikes by Cillian O’Regan, Shane Doolan and new signing Paul Kiongera. Ryan O’Carroll missed his spot kick, Athletic’s third, but it mattered little as United really struggled with their efforts from 12 yards. Remarkably, the Limerick side failed to hit the target with their first three attempts and Athletic advanced on a scoreline of three goals to one. Round 3 of Irish football’s most prestigious junior soccer competition is scheduled to take place on October 20. Stuart Templeman’s side have started the 2018/19 season with two wins from two following their opening day victory over AC Athletic in the newly-established League Cup. Their opponents in the next phase of that particular tournament will be Castleisland, who defeated Castlemaine 1-0 in the first
round.
CELTIC 8-0 BALLYHEIGUE
Defending league and cup champions Killarney Celtic had a comprehensive victory over Ballyheigue Athletic in the preliminary round of the Munster Junior Cup on Saturday. Lee Downing was the star of the show as he bagged an impressive hat-trick while Stephen McCarthy, Wayne Sparling, Danny Roche, Ryan Kelliher and Gary Keane completed the rout. This win sends The Hoops through to the first round proper, where they will take on MEK Galaxy (formerly Cedar Galaxy) away from home. Round 1 of the Munster Junior Cup will be played on the weekend of October 13. This coming Saturday at 5pm, Celtic will be hoping to kick-start their latest FAI Junior Cup odyssey when they host West Limerick outfit Shannonside FC at Celtic Park.
GALAXY
Recently-rebranded Killarney club MEK Galaxy were unable to pick up any points in their first ever game in the Premier Division as they fell to a 2-0 defeat away to Castleisland. This weekend they’re in FAI Junior Cup action as they face a tricky away tie against Clare powerhouse Avenue United.

Fantasy football expert Neil Buckley has picked up a €50 voucher for Brian James after topping the Killarney Advertiser fantasy football league in the month of August. Neil saw off stiff competition from Anthony Foley and Corey Walsh to secure first place with a single point to spare. In the end, Buckley’s decision to captain Sergio Agüero in Gameweek 4 proved crucial as the Manchester City striker scored two goals and assisted another against Brighton to earn his managers 16 points, or 32 points as skipper. Crokes and Legion through, East Kerry on the brink Eamonn Fitzgerald rounds up all of last weekend’s Kerry SFC action Dr Crokes began their defence of the Kerry SFC title at Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday last when they inflicted a 17-point defeat on Rathmore (3-26 to 2-12). In this high-scoring game, Tony Brosnan had a personal tally of 1-11 and 1-10 of this was from general play. He was on fire, kicking scores from all angles. Other high scoring forwards were Micheál Burns (1-5), David Shaw (0-5) and Mark O’Shea (1-0). Brosnan opened the scoring with a point after 40 seconds and after 15 minutes Crokes led by nine points to two. Brendan O’Keeffe and Mark Reen scored for Rathmore, for whom Kerry goalkeeper Shane Ryan lined out in his customary position at full forward. Crokes were on top in all sectors, particularly at midfield where Johnny Buckley and Mark O’Shea were in complete control. Coming up to half-time O’Shea palmed a cross past Kenneth O’Keeffe in the Rathmore goal to put Crokes 1-16 to 0-5 ahead at the interval.
BROSNAN
On the restart, Tony Brosnan continued his scoring exploits. Despite the huge deficit Rathmore refused to give up and they
were rewarded with a Mark Reen goal in the 35th minute. Cathal Murphy added a second goal ten minutes later and the score stood at 2-21 to 2-9. Micheál Burns goaled for Crokes, which put the Killarney club 15 points ahead, 3-21 to 2-9. This was a vintage display by Dr Crokes but it won't be as easy this weekend against St Kieran's. Referee Brendan Griffin had a good game.
LEGION V KILCUMMIN
This was a close affair and for much of the game there was only a point or two between the sides. After winning the Kerry and All-Ireland Intermediate Championships last year, Kilcummin are out on their own for the Kerry SFC. They were slow to start as Conor Keane, Legion’s most impressive player, opened the scoring for his side. Legion were four points to the good after 15 minutes while Kilcummin had yet to score. Former Kerry minor winning captain Paul O’Shea scored a goal in the 18th minute which put Kilcummin ahead, 1-2 to 0-4, and suddenly they came to life. Keane was very active. O’Donoghue was the creator of the scores and Keane duly obliged, kicking seven points. Moriarty scored 1-2 and Darragh Lyne kicked two points. The teams were level at half-time, 0-9 to 1-6.
SECOND HALF
Legion took control in the second half as defenders Cian Gammell and Jonathan Lyne moved forward to score points. A goal from Thomas Moriarty put Legion six clear, 1-12 to 1-6, but Kilcummin refused to yield. Three points from Noel Duggan and a 45 by Brendan Kealy cut the deficit to a point but, unfortunately for Kilcummin, that was as good as it got. Legion finished stronger and kicked four points to Kilcummin’s one. Referee Seán Joy had a good game. Final score: Legion 1-16 Kilcummin 1-12.
OTHER GAMES
In Brosna, St Kieran's were lucky to beat Mid Kerry who had a goal disallowed. They just held on for victory, 0-12 to 0-9. Dingle were much too good for a disappointing Austin Stacks side in Páirc an Ághasaigh. The home side won easily, 0-12 to 0-6, and are drawn against Rahil-
ly's on Sunday next. South Kerry won comfortably against Shannon Rangers, 3-16 to 1-10. Bryan Sheehan was top scorer for the Iveragh men as he registered 1-4. Two other Kerry players, Killian Young and Mark Griffin, were also prominent for the victors. Jack Kennedy scored 0-8 for Rangers. West Kerry led for most of their game against Kenmare District but they needed extra time to finally get over the line. Final score: Kenmare District 2-17 West Kerry 2-18. Substitute Gearóid Savage scored the winner in time added on as Kerins O’Rahilly’s eventually got the better of Kenmare Shamrocks in Austin Stack Park. Jack Savage scored seven points while Seán O’Shea scored eight for Kenmare (five from frees). Final score: Kerins O’Rahilly’s 2-15 Kenmare Shamrocks 1-17. East Kerry are without Kilcummin this year, which weakened their panel quite a lot, but they still came close to defeating St Brendan’s in Tralee. Darragh Roche was top scorer for the East as he kicked 1-4 with his four points coming from frees. Final score: St Brendan’s 2-11 East Kerry 1-12.

F ather and son go head-to-head in Cork
Father and son Kevin and Colin O’Donoghue will go head-to-head in the same class for the first time on this weekend’s Cork “20” International Rally. Though based in Cork city, the final twoday event of the season takes place on stages near Ballyvourney and Macroom this Saturday and Sunday. Father Kevin will drive his usual BMW M3. The family recently re-acquired the Ford Escort that Kevin used successfully in the early noughties and this is the car that Colin will drive. He usually drives his own 1600cc Escort but this weekend marks the first time that he will compete in the over 2000cc class. Seán Collins will co-drive for Colin while Timmy Kelly will be alongside Kevin. David Randles and Andrew Cronin make a welcome return to competition this weekend. They usually drive a Safety-00 car on events like the Rally of the Lakes but will start as car 70 on Saturday in their Nissan Almera. Alan Ring is expected to give his delayed BMW M3 its first outing in Cork this weekend.

Junior Cork “20” Rally
The Cork “20” Junior Rally, which runs on Sunday only, is well supported by local drivers. Glenflesk’s Kieran Reen and Mark O'Leary are seeded two in their Honda Civic. Jason Farrell from Killarney is in another Civic. Local co-driver Pat Cashman is contesting the historic element of the rally with Galway’s George Cullen in a Ford Escort Mk1. |
Motorcycle racing
Killarney motorcycle racer Frank Doherty still has a mathematical chance of winning the Dunlop Masters Superbike Cup this weekend. He trails championship leader Joe Grant by 26 points as they face the final triple-header round at Mondello Park on Saturday and Sunday. He needs to win all three races and hope Grant has an off weekend. “I can’t be caught for second but I’m not happy with that," he said. “I realistically have to win the three races and hope Ross Irwin, who is a really quick Northern Irish lad (Glenn Irwin’s brother), can finish between me and Joe Grant.”
Duggan late entry for “20” HIGH FLYER: Cathal Hickey on his way to victory at Shronaboy on Sunday.
Hickey wins national mountain bike race on home ground Killarney downhill mountain bike racer Cathal Hickey scored his first senior win at national level last weekend and he did so on home ground. Shronaboy Farm near Glenflesk hosted a round of the Irish Downhill Mountain Bike Series on Sunday. The event was the final round of the five-round national series and signalled Hickey’s best result to date in the senior category. He was second in the Wexford round in May and he also won the local round of the Grassroots Enduro series (also at Shronaboy) earlier this month but Sunday’s win was his biggest victory so far. Hickey’s result in the senior category
would have placed him fifth or sixth in the elite category. The Killarney man believes that the facilities at Shronaboy Farm has created a resurgence in the sport in the Killarney area. “A lot of locals who competed in the past seem to be wheeling bikes out of the shed,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “And you would see a lot of the more experienced lads out there marshalling and helping to run events.” Hickey’s next event is the Sligo round of the Grassroots Series which takes place this weekend. Evan Murphy, another member of Killarney Cycling Club, took third in the junior category.
Local driver Rob Duggan will contest this weekend’s Cork “20” behind the wheel of a Proton CarsIriz R5 from the Donnelly Motorsport stable. The 2016 JBRC champion has more recently been associated with his potent Ford Escort MK2 but will head to the event in the R5 machine - his first R5 outing since Donegal last year where he finished fourth overall driving a Fiesta R5. The deal came together late on Tuesday evening. “A phone call between myself and Eugene Donnelly quickly escalated into me
sending off an entry for the Cork ‘20’,” said the Aghadoe man. “It will be very good to get out in an R5 again. We had a very good result last time out in one so we are looking forward to seeing what we can do this time around. From what I have seen it seems a very good piece of kit but until I drive it and get a stage time in her it will be hard to tell. But it looks promising. “I'm managing my expectations and hoping to just to get mileage in the car and see what we can do. If we can get it to suit my driving style, who knows what could happen.”
