Temporary ‘Safe Street’ measures extended until at least January 6

Kerry County Council is to extend the temporary pedestrian measures in the town centre until at least January next year. | By Sean Moriarty The move, which is sure to anger some traders in the town, reverses a previous decision by the council to run the Safe Streets Programme until next week. The plan, introduced in July, was designed to make Killarney’s streets safer for visitors and locals. Footpaths were widened and Plunkett St is closed to traffic 24 hours a day instead of its overnight closure. A section of Kenmare place is also sectioned off from traffic. The temporary measures were due to end on September 2. The initial plan upset traders, it came at a cost of around 50 off street parking spaces and some councillors believe it’s a covert plan to introduce fulltime pedestrianisation to the town and without the correct consultation process. Long-serving councillor, Donal O’Grady, has been particularly vocal on the situation. Early this month he raised concerns that the footpath widening plan could have a detrimental effect on town centre business and that once the tourist season is over in September the centre will be empty of locals who have better parking options at out of town shopping centres. Last week Kerry County Council told the Killarney Advertiser that the meas-

ures were temporary but within days of issuing that statement officials backtracked and announced the scheme’s extension. “Following the introduction of the “Safe Streets Safe Town Plans” a commitment was given to carry out a review of the measures put in place to provide a safe environment, particularly for vulnerable road users, whilst supporting the reopening of business in the town. This Plan was developed in accordance with Government’s Roadmap for Reopening Society and Business and included the temporary closure of Strand Street in Dingle and Plunkett Street in Killarney. " a council spokesperson told the Killarney Advertiser. O’Grady is now seeking legal advice as he believes Kerry County Council and Killarney Municipal District do not have the powers to bring in such widespread changes in the town centre without a proper consultation process that involves input from elected councillors, traders and residents. Meanwhile Mayor Brendan Cronin, a

long-time supporter of pedestrianisation plans in the town centre has welcomed the move. “In the fine evening during the summer, as I walked from College St to Plunkett St, it was great to see the tables out on the streets and people enjoying themselves, “ he told the Killarney Advertiser. “Even New St was full of atmosphere, something we have not seen before.” Killarney Municipal District cited several reasons to extended the duration of the Safe Streets Programme. This is includes a potential rise in COVID-19 cases, an increased footfall in the town centre through the months of July and August and an anticipated boom in Christmas shopping. The council is also hopeful that the tourism season could be extended as people are restricted from overseas travel but the ‘staycation’ market is growing. "The Council is committed to reviewing the overall Safe Streets Plans for the towns and villages of the county, taking into account the tourist season and the reopening of the schools," added

Plunkett St needs more thought | By Sean Moriarty Town centre traders say there is no point in discussing the current town centre situation while COVID-19 still exists in the country. Pat Duggan, who operates Eager’s Newsagents says the current measures should remain in place for safety reasons but when the time is right a full and open discussion should take place on any future streetscape plans. “We can't argue against safety measures,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “As long as COVID is around we have to get our heads down and work with what we have.” Reversing the full time closure of Plunkett St is one solution according to Mr Duggan. “We have to think now about how are we going to get people into town for Christmas shopping, that is our next big hit,” he added. “Opening Plunkett St [to day time traffic] will help bring people back into town. Otherwise they will shop in Deerpark and other out of town places.” Michael O'Leary who runs O'Leary's Expert Eltrical on Plunkett St agrees in terms of COVID-19 restrictions but added the plan needs to looked at in great detail in the future. "Under COVID rules we have to accept it," he said. "It needs to be tweaked." the council spokesperson. " Additionally, the full measures identified in the Government’s Roadmap have not been implemented, with the public heath advice remaining for persons to maintain a two metre social distance from others, with additional requirements now imposed for restaurants/cafes and for vulnerable persons."

The next council meeting is sure to be heated | By Sean Moriarty The elected members of Killarney Municipal Council and Kerry County Council officials are preparing for an explosive meeting this week. The issue of pedestrianisation has long divided the council, particularly the arrangements on Plunkett St where car access is prevented between 7am and 7pm each day and this remained the case until Killarney Municipal Council’s Safe Street plan was put in place in July. This will now be extended until at least

January 6 as well as other temporary arrangements like footpath widening and elderly drop off points. A new road closing order, published by the Council, this week seeks to extend the measures that were due to end on September 2. The nightly arrangement to close of Plunkett St goes back to 2017 but several attempts have been made to overturn the decision. A motion, presented by Niall ‘Botty’ O’Callaghan at a 2019 KMD meeting was overruled after then Mayor Michael Gleeson exercised his casting vote.

Council rules state that it must be at least six months before a similar motion can be made and Cllr Donal Grady attempted one at the most recent council meeting in July. However, he was advised by a council official to delay his motion in light of current COVID-19 regulations and the Safer Streets project. He will re-table the motion at next week’s meeting where he is sure to have an equal amount of support and opposition. Current Mayor Brendan Cronin is a supporter of pedestrianisation.

Traffic chaos looming as schools return | By Sean Moriarty Killarney Gardai will monitor traffic and illegal parking in areas close to schools from Monday morning.

Bus operators left in the dark ahead of schools reopening

fortable with their children using public bus services and could chose to directly drop their children to school every morning and collect them again that evening adding to the problem. St Brendan’s College was due to welcome its First Year students today, Friday, while St Brigid’s will take in its newcomers on Monday. By Friday next week both secondary schools will be operating at full capacity. Both the Mon and The Mercy primary schools welcomed their new wave of Junior pupils this week with the remaining classes set to return on Monday. “We are aware of potential [traffic] issues and will monitor the situation on a daily basis,” a Garda spokesperson told the Killarney Advertiser. “We will work closely with other agencies like the council and the schools themselves. It is fluid and the situation is likely to change

School bus operators who service Killarney schools are still waiting on official guidance despite returning to work on Monday morning. | By Sean Moriarty School bus runs are operated by Bus Eireann on behalf of the Department of Education but that national bus service sub-contracts regional runs to local operators. One local bus firm, who wished to remain anonymous, told the Killarney Advertiser: “We are ready and willing to get back to work but we have no official guidance despite asking for it several times.” The operator said his firm and drivers have taken all the steps necessary to ensure a safe return to work for staff and students. These include a deep clean regime after each working shift and the provision of hand sanitisers on every bus. However, in terms of paperwork and actual operating procedures, he said he has been left in the dark by the Department of Education.

He raised concerns about the management of contact tracing paperwork, the added responsibility on his drivers who have to ensure students comply with social distancing while on board. One Department of Education guideline states that schools buses (for secondary students) can only operate at 50 per cent capacity. With just two days (from today, Friday) left before schools re-open he still does not know if he needs to add extra busses to each of his contracted runs and if he needs to employ extra drivers. “Taking on drivers is not so easy as they have to be Garda vetted before working on school busses and that takes time,” he added. Meanwhile, Primary School buses are allowed operate to full capacity, adding to the confusion. Some rural services could carry a mix of primary and secondary school children from rural areas to town schools.

Killarney Gardai are investigation a possible breach of COVID-19 crowd gathering rules at a house party in Ballyspillane earlier this week. The party took place on Tuesday night this week. One witness said that up to 40 people attended the party while another resident said the event was very noisy.

Current regulations, aimed at helping the spread of the Coronavirus, state that all house visits are limited to six people indoors and that outside events are limited to 15 people. Local Garda confirmed to the Killarney Advertiser that they are investigating a potential breach of public health guidelines in the area. “We are aware of the incident and it is being investigated,” a Garda spokesperson told the Killarney Advertiser.

Killarney is bracing itself for traffic chaos as schools across the town return for the first time since March 12. In normal circumstances, the morning and evening school runs are already a headache for motorists in the town centre area, particularly on New Road which feeds three secondary and two primary schools. The traffic is set to be much worse next week, buses carrying secondary school pupils have been reduced to 50 percent capacity due to social distancing measures. Increase in facemask littering a hazard to volunteers | By Sean Moriarty Volunteers from the Killarney Looking Good and Killarney Tidy Towns committee are concerned at the number of face masks that are been discarded by members of the public.

The volunteers say that they are being exposed to extra hazards when they have to pick up these facemasks that have been irresponsibly thrown away by people in the town. There has been a marked increase on

the number of facemasks littering the town’s streets in recent weeks. The wearing of facemasks become compulsory in indoor settings like shops on Monday August 10. Yvonne Quill, Chairperson of Killarney Looking Good is calling on members of the public to act responsibly. “People need to remember it is our volunteers and town council staff that have pick these up,” she told the Killarney Advertiser, “There is an increase in the number of tissues being thrown around too. It is disgusting and it is a hazard to our people.”

The Mayor of Kerry Patrick Conner Scarteen will do everything in his power to organise a Civic Reception to honour the achievements of Killarney Celtic who won the FAI National Youths Cup last Sunday. | By Sean Moriarty The National Youths Cup is the biggest soccer championship for underage teams. It is 22 years since a Kerry side has won the prestigious cup with the Killarney team repeating Tralee Dynamo’s achievement of 1998. They defeated Cork side Douglas Hall in a penalty shootout – it is the first ever national title won by the Killarney club at any level. After Sunday’s exciting match, Cllr Niall ‘Botty’ O’Callaghan, a member of the club, took to social media calling for a Civic Reception to honour the achievements of the town team. Club chair Paul Sherry confirmed to the Killarney Advertiser that Botty had made contact with the town mayor regarding the reception. There are a number of procedures to go through before any person or group can be awarded such a reception but the County Mayor chairs that committee. He confirmed to the Killarney Advertiser that he would look favourably on Botty’s suggestion.

“I would welcome it and I hope his request will accommodated,” Mayor Conner Scarteen told the Killarney Advertiser. “There are procedures in place for such events and now with COVID-19 restrictions it might take a while.” Meanwhile club chair Paul Sherry said he and his fellow Killarney Celtic are still on ‘Cloud Nine’ following Sunday’s success. “We are ecstatic, we are still on Cloud Nine, “ he told the Killarney Advertiser. “It is a massive achievement for the club and all involved.” Local Gardai escorted the team bus through the streets of Killarney on their return from Tralee on Sunday night. The bus was followed by supporters cars, all of whom had to watch the game via live social media feed as COVID-19 restrictions prevent fans from attending any match. “It was a welcome home cavalcade, all within social distancing rules, “added Mr Sherry. The Killarney Advertiser’s Adam Moynihan’s match report and analysis is on page 58.

Killarney officially a smoke-free town Killarney is set to become a smokeless fuel town from Tuesday (September 1).

| By Sean Moriarty Last year the then Environment Minister Richard Bruton announced that towns with a population of between 10,000 and 15,000 would be included in extension of the current Low Smoke Zones. The result is a ban on the burning of smoky coal in Killarney. The ban comes in to effect this Tues-

day. Local counsillor Michael Gleeson was a supporter of the move when it was announced last December. “This will prove to be immense benefit to people with respiratory issues like asthma. The Killarney location encourages a phenomenon called inversion which encourages smoke to linger, trapped between the mountains,” said the former geography teacher.

Calls to save historic watch towers from dereliction

EXCLUSIVE

Well-known local man Jerry O’Grady, the Chairman of the Monsignor Hugh O'Flaherty Memorial Society, is growing increasingly concerned about the condition of two buildings of historical importance that are falling into disrepair.

Pub announcement expected today

Two of Killarney's 19th Century stonebuilt watchtowers are in serious danger of being irretrievably damaged and lost due to official neglect according to Mr O’Grady, who is calling for intervention by Kerry County Council or the National Parks and Wildlife Service. The Tower and Lodge on the Kenmare Road and Round Tower at Lord Brandon's Cottage are in danger of becoming derelict. “A short few years ago there was talk within the National Parks and Wildlife Service that the [Kenmare Road] building could and should be restored and possibly put to a tourism/heritage use,” Mr O’Grady said. “At the time, the sin-

gle-story Lodge was largely intact and the Tower was free of plant life. Unfortunately, nothing was done and today it is all but invisible from the road. There is little doubt but in a short time the structure of the Tower will be damaged beyond repair and will join some other parts of our built heritage such as Ross Cottage, Glena, and Queen’s Cottage as derelict shells or heaps of rubble.” Mr O’Grady is calling for an official campaign, similar to the one that saved Killarney House, to be established to safe and protect the Watch Towers. “Our now beautiful Killarney House and Gardens was ignored for decades by these agencies and sustained lobbying by local heritage and tourism interests was all but ignored. Without the fortuitous timing of Failte Ireland Funding becoming available and a committed Minister for Heritage in being in office at the right time [Jimmy Deenihan], it is safe to assume that it too would have had a similar fate,” he added.

Killarney publicans say they are not hopeful of being allowed open next Tuesday following comments made by the National Public Health Emergency Team this week.

Pubs that do not sell food have been told to stay closed since March 15 in an effort to stop the spread of the Coronavirus but their food-selling colleagues have been allowed trade since June 29. It was hoped that ‘wet’ pubs would get a permit to reopen on August 7 but government officials delayed that plan until at least August 31, as they grew concerned at the rise in confirmed cases in the country. A decision is expected today,, Friday, on whether pubs can re-open or not next Tuesday.

Local bar owner John O’Shea, whose family operate the traditional Jack C’s on High St, say he is not hopeful of getting permission to re-open. “I am ready to go,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “I am not too optimistic. Ireland is the only country in Europe where bars remain closed. Some countries are fully open and others are allowed trade with restrictions.” The Killarney publican was basing his comments of what action Chief Medical Officer Dr Ronan Glynn said at an Oireachtas Covid-19 Committee meeting on Wednesday this week. As of today, Friday, rural pubs have been closed for a total of 166 days.

DISREPAIR: A before and after shot by Jerry O'Grady shows the level of neglect afford to the Tower and Lodge on the Kenmare Road.

The Old Kenmare Road walking route through Killarney National Park will remain closed until at least the end of September after the bridge at Cores Cascade was washed away by recent heavy rainfalls. While it is still possible to walk from the upper Torc carpark to the point where Cores Cascade crosses the Crinnagh River it is not possible to continue as far as Derrycunnihy Church or to Kenmare.

“We are working on replacing the bridge, unfortunately just repairing is not an option. It is difficult to estimate the length of time it will take, ideally we would have the work completed by the end of next month,” a National Parks and Wildlife Services spokesperson told the Killarney Advertiser. “You can walk from the upper car park at Torc and walk up Torc mountain, you can also walk to the river and return - roughly 8km. You are not able to walk from Killarney to Derrycunnihy Church or to Kenmare. It is not possible to go from Derrycunnihy back to Killarney via the Old Kenmare Road.”

NEWS IN CONVERSATION 14

28.8.2020

This week journalist with the Killarney Advertiser Sean Moriarty is 'In Conversation' with Cllr Cronin concerned at rural housing submission in County Development plan

Another step towards normal as school trafic wardens return to work | By Sean Moriarty After almost five months off the job, popular School Traffic Warden Anne Breen returned to duty this week. She took up her post the New Road/ Rock Road junction on Wednesday morning, her first day at work since the national shutdown was announced on March 12. Originally from Ballyhaunnis in County Mayo, the Countess Grove woman arrived in Killarney on November 1, 1983 to work in the newly opened Tesco (or Quinnsworth as it was known back then). “There might have been a man involved,” she joked, as she hid her smile behind her Mayo facemask. Anne is married to well-known council worker and former fireman Anthony Breen. “The Mayo mask is temporary, we are due to get the face shields later today,” she said on Wednesday – officially her first day back at work but she and her colleagues did participate in a health and

safety briefing on Tuesday. “It was all about keeping myself safe and keeping the children safe, keep your distance, common sense stuff, really,” she said. This is her second year working as a school traffic warden and although employed by Killarney Municipal Council, she works very closely with The Mon and Holy Cross National Schools on New Road. “We will help the secondary school students too, but in reality we are here to work for the National Schools and work to their timetables,” she added. Clearly well-respected by her ‘customers’, parents and grandchildren encouraged their children to welcome her back to work as she escorted them across the road. She knew most of them by name and Anne’s reappearance at the school crossing signalled the return of some degree of familiarity to early morning town life. Of course, there was some degree of confusion too, it is all of 24 weeks since March 12, so many motorists had forgot-

ten that it is not permitted to turn right on to New Road during school drop-off and pick-up times. Some angry drivers let their feelings known through their hooters. “They will have to get used to it,” said Anne, without getting too stressed about it. “It is great to be back. I was a little nervous but so far so good. We are waiting on the council to put down ‘Two Metre’ signs on the footpaths to encour-

age people to keep their distance. “ While Wednesday morning was relatively quiet, only the two primary schools were open to take in a new wave of junior infants. Anne is expecting that to change on Monday as the secondary schools re-open. First Year students will begin their secondary school lives from Monday but by Thursday next all schools will be operating at capacity – meaning traffic will be back to capacity too.

Cllr Cronin concerned at rural housing submission in County Development plan | By Sean Moriarty Killarney Mayor, Brendan Cronin, said he is “deeply concerned” at aspects of the Draft Kerry County Development Plan regarding the construction of houses in rural areas. The Office of Planning Regulator has made a submission to Kerry County Council’s development plan. Its submission stated: “[The OPR] expresses concern that 59% of new residences constructed in Kerry between 2015 and 2020 were located in open countryside outside any villages or town.” The body has made recommendations that Kerry County Council adopts measures to turn around this trend in the new County development plan.

“I am deeply concerned with the tone and direction of this statement and it is clear to me that the OPR have an anti-rural agenda and want to force people into towns and villages, which would have devastating consequence in Kerry,” Mayor Cronin told the Killarney Advertiser. “The granting of rural homes is vital in maintaining and supporting the heart of rural Kerry which in turn maintains rural schools, rural GAA clubs and rural communities. It is also vital that family members can continue build and live on their own land adjacent to their families. Any attempt by the OPR to dictate or prevent Kerry County council through our County Development plan from granting of rural homes must be fought and opposed at every opportunity.”

Care home's garden concert prove a hit

The residents of Killarney Nursing Home on Rock Road were treated to a garden concert on Wednesday thanks to a project called the Mobile Music Machine. | By Sean Moriarty Mobile Music Machine is visiting care homes across the country. On Wednesday members of the Blackwater Valley Opera performed an outdoor concert on the grounds of Killarney Nursing home in an effort to raise their spirits following months of visitor restrictions. These one-hour concerts are at an appropriate social distance in the grounds of care homes. Residents and staff gather in outdoor areas or listen to the performance through open windows and doors

“If there is one positive thing to emerge from the pandemic, it has shone a light on the desperate need to engage on a more regular basis with the most isolated members of society. Through our repeated concert visits, we hope to build long-lasting friendships with the residents of care homes throughout the county,” said Mobile Music Machine founder and director Gerald Peregrine. The musicians also visited Our Lady of Lourdes Nursing Home in Kilcummin on Wednesday morning.

Senator Coughlan apologises for attending controversial golf event | By Sean Moriarty Former Killarney Senator Paul Coughlan has admitted to the Killarney Advertiser that he did attend the controversial golf outing in Clifden, County Galway last week but said he did so in good faith. The event, organised by the Oireachtas Golf Society, was attended by over 80 people including some of the biggest names in Irish politics. It took place last Wednesday night, August 19, the day after the Government announced a range of new restrictions in an effort to combat the spread of the coronavirus. The measures included a ban on spectators attending sporting events and a limit of six people socialising together indoors. The Ballydowney politician, a former mayor of Killarney, retired from active politics ahead of February’s General Election. outing and dinner as a former captain of the Oireachtas Golf Society. The event caused widespread anger in a community who felt forced to live by different rules from the political elite. The fallout forced the resignation of Agricultural minister Dara Calleary and EU Commissioner Phil Hogan. Mr Coughlan refused to be drawn into the political controversy surrounding the event but did offer an apology. “I am no longer in public life,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “I do apologise for being there and never set out to hurt anyone. I attended in good faith and I did not intend to cause any offence to anyone.” Mr Coughlan shared a table with former RTE broadcaster Seán O’Rourke. Mr O’Rourke retired from the state broadcaster in May this year but was hoping to return with a Saturday morning political programme in coming weeks. That has now been cancelled as a result of his attendance at the event.

ON THE TELLY: Kerry football legend and local Garda Aidan O'Mahony featured on new RTE documentary about life in Ireland during lockdown

Local garda and GAA star featured on new RTE documentary GAA commentary legend Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh and Kerry and Rathmore footballer and local community Garda, Aidan O’Mahony featured in the latest AIB documentary, The Toughest Summer, with a host of many other familiar Kerry faces. The documentary will be available on AIB’s YouTube channel on Tuesday night. Told through the lens of award-winning documentary maker, Ross Whitaker, the programme tracked their story alongside a host of other GAA members nationwide and celebrated the strength and resilience of the thousands of people in GAA communities. The documentary delved in behind the scenes to life in Kerry through Aidan’s work as a community Garda, and Mícheál giving one fan the best birthday surprise. “Anyone who is involved in the GAA – there’s always a connection,” Aidan said. “No matter whether you’re a supporter or someone that has played, they follow you through thick and thin and that’s the reason you put a jersey on your back, to represent these people.”

The 50-minute documentary marks the finale in AIB’s The Toughest Summer series. The Toughest Summer showcases the powerful and extraordinary ways that the GAA has connected with their local communities when needed most, proving that even when there are no games being played, the GAA is still the beating heart of Ireland’s rural and urban communities. The documentary is the culmination of a journey through a unique period of time in GAA history and chronicles the unprecedented halt to the games in March 2020. It follows the stories of GAA people and their communities across the country as they learned to cope with their new reality, and their subsequent path towards returning to on-field action once more. It tells the story of a summer that has been like no other; one that has truly highlighted the importance of GAA within local communities and one that has united friends and rivals, old and young, players and fans. AIB’s The Toughest Summer is now available on AIB’s YouTube channel.

BEHIND YOUR BUSINESS

Making a meal of it! Liam Kearney and Shane Cronin have set up an online pre-prepared nationwide meal delivery service called boxprepped.ie | By Sean Moriarty Two young Killarney entrepreneurs have come up with a novel solution to the task of daily meal preparation for busy people. In simple terms, subscribers to the service can pre-select from a range of 12 different meals and have the ingredients delivered to a home or work place. All the end user has to do is cook the fresh meal, eliminating the need for pre-prep at home and even the weekly grocery shop. Both young entrepreneurs are member of Spa GAA club, Liam a former All Ireland winning minor captain with Kerry, and Shane who is already running GAA sportswear firm Gaelic Plus. Their home club has rowed behind their new venture and is offering kitchen facilities at the clubhouse until they are in a

position to open their own facility Liam and Shane package all the ingredients needed to make the meals every Sunday and Monday and will have them delivered to your home or office by Tuesday (local deliveries can be achieved by Monday) by courier. Customers place their order by Thursday the previous week to give the lads a chance to source the ingredients and prepare the box for delivery. They were inspired to chase their business dream after spotting similar services in Dublin and on-line. “There is nothing like this in the southwest,” said Liam. The idea came at the start of lockdown, bored at home they went looking for opportunities. “There is no way this would have happened without COVID-19,” said Shane. In fact it was Liam’s job as a financial analyst in Cork that provided the inspiration for boxprepped.ie “I know what is like to have a busy lifestyle, trying to get back up from Cork to attend training and matches and find the time to shop and cook too,” he said.

One of the fun factors of their project is that it teaches people how to cook and the importance of each ingredient to a dish. Each delivery is accompanied by simple instructions that will have people cooking first class meals in 30 minutes or less. “Our boxes contain the recipes, pre-portioned ingredients and step by step recipe cards on how to create your masterpiece,” added Shane. “We do not provide kitchen staples such as oil, salt, pepper, sugar, milk and butter.” They did keep a close eye on their business rivals and learned from mistakes others were making. The local men are conscious about the environment too. “We stalked them [rivals] in fairness,” said Shane. “We tried all their meals. We found they had a lot of waste too – all of our packaging materials are fully re-usable and we arrange collection of our boxes and icepacks so we can re-use the packaging.” Not to be confused with supermarket style microwaveable meals, all of the ingredients are fresh and sourced locally. They are offering 12 different meals, ca-

tering for all tastes, including vegan and vegetarian options. Users log on and chose their meals for the week ahead. This can be for an individual or an entire family. The ingredients of each daily meal is packaged separately in one large, courier friendly box. Shrink-wrapped meats are wrapped again in a special material made from recycled denim and leak prove icepacks to keep them fresh and cool on the meal’s overnight journey from their kitchen to users home or office. Fresh vegetable are also delivered in the same box, but are placed in paper bags that are clearly labelled for the day the meal was selected for. On delivery, the customer places the produce into their fridge, ready for consumption on the day of their choice. Both men’s background in sports made them aware of what is needed, in terms of nutritional value, to make a good meal. “We have tasted and tested all the meals ourselves,” says Liam. The future is bright too and the pair have identified another market in third level colleges. The idea is the same, students can pre-order their week’s food, the box is delivered to their college on Tuesday and they do not have to worry about food for the rest of the week. “We hope to set up hubs in third level colleges,” added Liam.

| HOW IT WORKS 1. YOU DECIDE Select from 12 weekly changing recipes. There is a choice of meat, veggie and plant-based boxes. 2. WE DELIVER Nationwide delivery. Our special packaging will keep everything chilled in case you’re not home to take the delivery. 3. YOU COOK Step by step recipes and perfectly measured ingredients ensure you will be cooking up a masterpiece in no time! 4. WE COLLECT All of our packaging can be reused for future orders. Our delivery company will collect the packaging every few days too – ideally during deliver of the following week’s order.

Can Google help you lose fat? Have you ever Googled: ‘weight loss’, ‘nutrition, ‘which diet is right for me’ or ‘healthy eating’ ? The number of pages of content and sheer volume of information that pops up is overwhelming. Let me simplify it for you a bit. I should say this information holds true for most people with the exception of those with medical conditions or other extenuating circumstances. If you eat more food (energy) than you use, you will most likely gain weight. If you use more energy than you consume (food) you will most likely lose weight. This is the Calories In Vs. Calories Out rule. Simple right? When it comes to weight loss this is the number one rule to live by. It also brings up a couple of questions, so let’s review those. The first is: What should I eat? I am always a fan of eating whole foods over processed food. This means fruits, nuts, seeds, meat, grains, and vegetables. Some of these need to be limited over others but they are all examples of whole foods. Do I mean you should never eat processed food? No way- as long as you keep these things in moderation you are setting up habits to foster weight loss and better overall health. The second is how many calories should I be eating? That one is a bit more tricky

because it depends on quite a few factors such as current weight, height, body fat percent, goal weight, the date you want to reach your goal, and your current activity levels. Phew- that’s a lot. The good news is that I can help you with that. If you are interested in the accountability and guidance of a nutrition coach, drop me a line on nutrition@activate.ie to get started.

Wayward Irish Spirits is a family owned Irish Whiskey company based at the Lakeview Estate, near Fossa. Lakeview Estate was the family home of Daniel ‘The Liberator’ O’Connell and his direct descendant Maurice O’Connell founded the distillery there early last year. ‘The Liberator Irish Whiskey’ celebrates the legacy of Daniel O’Connell, born in Kerry in 1775 was launched on the Irish market last November before going on sale in the New Year, just a few short months after Wayward Irish Spirits started distilling in Fossa. Now 18 months on (from its foundation) the Fossa company is set to launch its second batch (limited to 1000 bottles) of its original offering to the Irish market. “My forebear Daniel O’Connell’s independent spirit and sometimes wayward approach inspires how we craft whiskey at our family’s historic Lakeview Estate on the shores of Lough Leane in Killarney,” founder Maurice O’Connell said. “Despite the challenges of COVID-19, we’re thrilled with the response to the inaugural release earlier this year which is now almost sold out and are now re-

leasing Batch two. This is a limited release of 1,000 numbered bottles. Batch two has everything the Inaugural Release had, but those extra 5 months have added to the roundness and balance.” Alongside ‘The Liberator’ the Lakeview Estate grows its own barley and laid down its first casks in early 2019. “We are proud to be celebrating the 18-month birthday of our Single Estate Pot Still spirit and are working towards grain-to-glass distilling here in 2024”,”

Cancellation of adventure races a blow to economy | By Sean Moriarty Killarney-based Elite Event Management has cancelled its Quest Killarney and Run Killarney events due to the ongoing impact of COVID-19. The Quest Adventure race was scheduled for October 10, and Run Killarney – billed as Ireland’s most-scenic half-marathon was set for November 14 after previously

being postponed from July 18. Together they attract over 5,500 participants and 3000 spectators, giving the town of Killarney a much-welcomed out of season tourism boost. The organisers say the events contribute an estimated €4m to the local economy and support many jobs directly at Elite Event Management and indirectly through tourism related roles. "We reluctantly took the decision to cancel both Quest Killarney and Run Killarney 2020. Considering the ongoing restrictions and increased infection rates of the virus we felt it was the best decision to protect our participants, staff and the wider community,” Director Oliver Kirwan told the Killarney Advertiser. “It is very disappointing for everyone involved and the local hospitality industry, but we will be working hard to give everyone an even better experience in 2021. I would like to thank everyone for their support and encouragement and we look forward to welcoming back participants to Killarney next year”. Run Killarney is planned for July 17 next year with Quest Killarney expected to take place on October 2, 2021.

The fallout from the controversial The Oireachtas Golf Society scandal, also known informally as ‘Golfgate’ has, so far, seen three senior politicians resign. The biggest name to tumble was that of EU commissioner Phil Hogan who resigned from his position as European Trade Commissioner on Wednesday night. Ahead of his resignation, and in the middle of the controversy surrounding his movements over the last few weeks,

we asked Killarney Advertiser readers: Should he stay or Should he go? Most called for his head on plate, angered that ordinary people have to obey crowd gathering rules while the political elite are free to do what they want. One rule for them and another for us. However, Hogan was playing a key role in the EU’s Brexit negotiations and having such a senior Irish politician involved in those discussion was seen by some as the only chance to survive calls for his resignation.

JAKUB JEDYCZOWSKI

Politicians are influencing laws so if they break the law they should resign.

If he’s not in his position, it’s a much greater risk. Don’t agree with what he did, but would be very worried of Ireland losing that key role. NATASHA SHEEHY

I think he should resign because he’s a politician and he should be leading by example.

It’s been blown out of proportion. It was foolish that he did it. People are feeling frustrated and it has turned into a witch hunt. Compared to other countries this isn’t as bad.

KATE KARIUKI AND GER O’MAHONEY

He should resign as everyone has to abide by the rules and regulations.

For the benefit of the country, he can’t resign. His position is too important. However, from the moral standpoint, he should resign.

Think he should resign. Consequences should be his removal from his post. Working as support staff for Kerry parents and friends were doing our best to abide by these rules and regulations so I don’t see why he can’t.

CHRISTY O’LEARY

It's ridiculous what he’s doing. He should resign. Why is it one law for us and another one for them?

KEVIN O’SULLIVAN

People are blowing things out of proportion. Everyone is making up their own rules. It's up to each individual to look after themselves. Some of the papers and media have gone overboard with it.

Bird’s ceases Tralee operation due to COVID concerns Bird’s Euroshow has cut short its stay in Tralee despite putting in place rigorous new measures to protect staff and customers from contracting Covid-19, while operating safely in a strictly controlled environment. The decision to close the event a week earlier than scheduled was made following mixed messaging from the government and the absence of updated operational guidelines for business owners. Bird’s were in the County capital to coincide with the annual Rose of Tralee which has been cancelled due to pandemic restrictions. The Bird family has supported the Festival of Kerry for 60 years. Previously, the funfair was denied permission to set up in Killarney for its annual July visit to the town. Kerry County Council refused a permit to operate on the town’s Fair Field car park due to COVID-19 crown gathering restrictions. Setting up in Tralee was allowed as the funfair pitched on privately owned, and not council owned lands. Bird’s implemented strict hygiene and crowd measures at the Tralee site and did their very best to remain operational in current circumstances. However, lack of governmental clarity on such events has forced a re-think and they have now decided to cease opera-

tion one week earlier than planned. “Despite the most challenging circumstances, which were compounded by confusing messages from those in power, great efforts were made to stage a safe family event at a venue where social distancing and protective measures were implemented and maintained.” said a company statement. “Some Government decisions that may be designed to minimise the threat of the virus are actually placing businesses, including ours, in serious danger of total

closure. “The management and 27 staff of Birds Euroshow wish to thank the customers who visited the family funfair in Tralee over the past week and we look forward to returning in the future. “We understand the seriousness of the current pandemic and in closing our gates in Tralee, we hope that this will move the spotlight onto the safe reopening of school gates everywhere. Please stay safe and protect each other.”

"We find ourselves in a unique situation – having an iconic slogan that doesn’t quite fit in the current COVID-19 environment," said Catherine Tan-Gillespie, global chief marketing officer at KFC, in a statement. "While we are pausing the use of It’s Finger Lickin’ Good, rest assured the food craved by so many people around the world isn’t changing one bit.” KFC has been using the slogan for 64 years but World Health Organisation guideline say that one of the steps people can take to protect themselves from spreading COVID-19 is washing hands often, and keeping hands away from your mouth, nose, and eyes. KFC said the slogan will not go away forever and will bring it back when the time is right.

Trump Mrs Trump goes gardening CORNER

Political confidence and arrogance are often poor bedfellows. Just ask anyone who has an opinion on last week ‘s famous game of golf in Clifden. It seems Melina Trump, wife of Donal, is cut from the same cloth as her Irish political counterparts. This week, she unveiled a newlook White Hose garden, putting her own personal touch on the historic lawn and shrubs. Her confidence or arrogance depending on what side of the (garden) fence you are on - no one

renovates the garden of house they intend leaving in less than three months – do they? While she said the renovations were funded privately, and we will take her word on that, it has to be questioned if a massive gardening job is necessary in the middle of a pandemic. Bit like our Irish political golfers if you like. US Presidents have long used the Rose Garden as a backdrop

for major events, and Trump has been increasingly using it for outdoor events and press briefings, which are considered safer for gatherings amid the coronavirus pandemic. John F. Kennedy welcomed the Project Mercury astronauts in the Rose Garden; Richard Nixon’s daughter Tricia was married on its lawn; and Barack Obama did a ‘Rose Garden Freestyle’ rap there.

In bloom: Kerry street artist to bring Tralee Greenway to life West Kerry street artist Ciara McKenna is aiming to bring the Tralee to Fenit Greenway to life by creating a larger-than-life wildflower mural, with blossoms cascading along the walled part of the walk in Tralee town - known locally as the Green Mile. Incorporating local flora and fauna, Ciara is inviting community groups and members of the public to collaborate with her in the realisation of this unique piece of street art. “I will base the mural on the many beautiful tiny flowers hidden in the hedgerows and walls of ‘The Green Mile’ part of the Greenway,” Ciara explained. “My hope is that locals and community groups, while out walking the Green Mile, will photograph these tiny wildflowers and post them to the project’s

Facebook page.” Ciara - in consultation with Cathy Fischer, Kerry Biodiversity Officer - will then scale up these tiny delicate flowers to create a vivid piece of street art along the Greenway’s walls in Tralee town. “These delicate lifeforms have a huge impact on our mental health; this mirrors my belief that each person in a community has a role, each being has value, we all have a part to play,” she said, Ciara’s work ‘Grandma’s Hands’ - a large scale mural created in response to the pandemic and in tribute to our senior citizens - recently garnered national attention having featured on RTÉ’s ‘Ireland on Call’. A member of the public subsequently invited Ciara to come to Tralee and create a unique and uplifting work in a public space.

Among the many takeaway businesses that have started using Gigable are big name brands such as Eddie Rockets, Apache Pizza and Abrakebabra. The app also allows many people to earn extra income in their spare time by doing shifts as delivery drivers. ‘Gigable’ is a ground-breaking new ‘gig economy’ app which connects restaurants with freelance delivery drivers. This has allowed many local restaurants that didn’t previously have a delivery service, quickly and easily launch food deliveries and keep their businesses afloat. Founded by tech entrepreneur and former Defence Forces officer John Ryan, the online platform’s initial plan

was to meet the needs of businesses in the hospitality and events sector for short-term shift work as required. As businesses adapt to the new COVID-19 world, the platform now seeks to recruit local drivers to meet the appetite for restaurant deliveries. ‘’We’re certainly hoping that more and more restaurants decide to go with Gigable,” Ryan said, “We feel very privileged to be helping many restaurants and takeaways provide a good delivery service. The app has been performing very well here, and its all down to how easy it is to use and how fair and transparent it is for both the restaurant and the delivery driver. One of the key advantages of Gigable is that restaurants keep total control of their delivery system, from their brand identity to ensuring that drivers are wearing branded clothing. You don’t get this with other platforms.’’

World War II plane crash anniversary cancelled A gathering in West Kerry which was supposed to celebrate 80th anniversary of an important historical event had to be cancelled due to new COVID-19 restrictions. On August 20, 1940 a Luftwaffe Focke Wulf 200 ‘Condor’ aircraft crash landed on a ridge near Mount Brandon. Developing engine problems in the early morning the four-engined plane lost altitude as it attempted to return along the Irish coast to Western France from where it had taken off earlier that day. Castlegregory Information Centre relayed the following information. “As is common in coastal areas there was dense fog waiting for the rising sun to burn it off. “The German captain headed for Tralee bay to ditch the dying aircraft but with primitive navigation tools the aircraft had lost too much altitude to scrape over Mount Brandon. With a gap in the fog Captain Kurt Mollenhauer managed to react to the rising mountain and the plane belly landed on Faha Ridge. “The local Garda (police) met the Germans as they carried their wounded off Mount Brandon on the pilgrims trail. They were duly given a glass of milk by a local by all accounts before they were then taken by the Irish army, the 5th Infantry Battalion, to Collins Barracks in Cork. “At the time Ireland had nowhere to

hold prisoners of war. In fact they were the first Germans to be held here. A prisoner internment was built at the Curragh Army base in Kildare where the Germans where eventually moved. The last crew member who had married and lived in Ireland, died in August 2010. Remains of the plane are still visible on the slopes of Mount Brandon. “ Locals, who had hoped to celebrate the 80th anniversary, had made contact with Kurt Kyck’s family and had invited them to the celebration but it had to be cancelled at the last minute due new restrictions that came in to play days before the celebration. A visit to O’Connor’s pub in Cloghane will reveal an engine from the actual aircraft sitting outside the front door together with many photographs and artefacts inside -subject to COVID-19 rules, of course.

The news was met with widespread disappointment by fans at home and abroad but after “the most incredible 10 years together” they have called it a day. “To all our fans, it is with sadness we say this but today we announce the end of our journey together as a band... WELCOME Welcome to August Home & Living. We hope all our readers are keeping well during these very unusual times. All this made me realise how a kind word can change your day for the better. We are all going through a crazy time and it’s affecting all of us differently, so maybe we could all pass on a kind word, and make someone’s day a little brighter.

bedroom 30

trends 2020 The bedroom is one of the most important spaces in the home but often neglected. We spend at least seven to eight hours a day there (hopefully). And sleep is essential to our wellbeing. While most of us don’t think of bedrooms as functional spaces, it’s essential to design a room that invokes a feeling of calm and peace. Storage is also key bedroom clutter does not lend to a stress free sleep. We need a space to escape to and whether that's all neutral or bold colours is all about your taste for this personal space.

31

B RIGHT MONOCHROMATICS While previous bedroom design trends have favoured soft and subtle colours, bold hues such as cobalt blue, forest green and ochre yellow are all set to be big throughout 2020. While interior design has often been seen as traditional vs contemporary, this new 2020 design trend sees the mishmash of both. Bring this into the bedroom by incorporating new furnishings or sleek surfaces with your favourite things that you’ve collected over the years, think souvenirs from holidays, vintage style bed frames, or ornate mirrors to create a sense of nostalgia.

E ARTHY SCHEME Creating spaces to improve mental health is at the forefront of 2020 bedroom design trends, This can be seen in trends such as bringing in plants, using natural linen and washed cotton bedding and wool throws, stocking up on home comforts and using soft comforting colours.

W ICKER FURNITURE In tone with the use of an earthy colour palette and natural materials, wicker or rattan furniture is seeing a big comeback this year. Incorporate this with quirky bedside tables or even in your bedroom lighting. A simple way to incorporate this design trend is wicker storage baskets add practicality while implementing this design trend.

N ATURE Whether its from the addition of plants, patterned wallpaper with birds or animals, you'll start to see more natural elements in bedrooms over the coming year. Paired with wooden furniture and natural rugs such as sisal or jute.

B OHEMIAN STYLE Bohemian style is one that means different things to different people. Some tend to believe that boho style is all about bright prints, eclectic blend of pattern and an overload of color. Others gravitate to the neutral backdrop and the sense of relaxing calm it brings. If you love both the ideas and want a mix of the cheerful pattern and a rejuvenating

atmosphere in the bedroom, then try out boho-chic this spring.

F UN HEADBORDS This year, it's all about fun headboards. Design trends are changing from square and angular shapes to more curves and softer forms. We are seeing more patterns and bold colour, especially in a contrasting headboard fabric and wallpaper, The moment for simplicity in a bedroom has been done, and people are now wanting to see a bit more interest and playfulness in the bedroom. A great way to ease into this is an upholstered headboard in bold or patterned fabric. If, like me, your prefer white bed linen and walls it's a great way to add colour and texture.

C ONTRASTING NIGHTSTANDS Remember buying your bed, dresser and lockers, all in the same place as a matching set? We are all being a little more adventurous and mixing it up a little more, so our rooms don't look like a furniture catalogue. For anyone who needs a little direction, chose a fabric headboard or bed over a wood one, that way when you choose wood side tables, they don't compete with the headboard too much.

U NIQUE LIGHTING Next to the mattress, lighting is key .Choose a statement chandelier, or large pendant depending on your scheme, that is beautiful from all angles, including the bed. We are seeing a lot of wall mounted bedside lights and with the trend of an ascetic flex so they don't need to be wired in, some can be moved to direct your light - excellent if you love reading in bed, and also freeing up your bedside table.

P INK IS NOT JUST FOR GIRLS Pink made a combank with minenial pink, its a trend that has not gone anywhere but has evoled over the last number of years to more dusky hues. There are, however, a few rules for mastering this candy colour - avoid anything that vaguely reminds you of a colour Barbie would wear; blush-toned, muted pinks are the way to go. And keep finishes matt – anything shiny and pink, and you are entering six-year-old's bedroom territory!

RENEWABLE BIOETHANOL

Home Fires have arrived in Kerry Automatic Bioethanol Fires need no chimney or flue as they produce no harmful smoke or carbon monoxide. Bioheat Ireland, a Tralee based company, have brought Automatic refuel bioethanol home Fires from the world famous Planika brand to the Kerry and Munster region.

New season. New look.

MOODY BEDROOM

What is the best thing to do? Sleep!!!!! Here are a few examples of recent projects to illustrate how a moody bedroom can be created. The design brief was to create a bedroom schemes that is suitable for relaxation, reading and leisure. The walls were painted with an olive green colour. The fabric headboard is fitted right up against the window to benefit from the morning light. The occasional tub chair by the bed is functional for extra clothing. The mixture of different textured cushions on the bed give a sense of warmth. They serve a purpose during the day when taking time out. They feel nice against the skin, especially when relaxing and reading a book. Another key element is a good light. This will set the ambience. As you can see from the photographs, the bedroom feels inviting and cosy. This overall colour palette uses greens,

blue, gold and bronze in various colours. You can see those colours in furnishings, furniture and fabrics. The master bedroom has an autumnal colour palette. The mauve headboard has metallic beading in it. This works with the textured quilt. A good lighting plan was key in this room. An extra bedside lamp is a good solution to ensure that there is sufficient reading light. The en suite of the master bedroom has got dark earthy grey tiles. They give a feeling of intimacy and feel calming. This is the feeling that darker colours give, they tend to relax us. Therefore both bedroom interior design schemes are called moody. This palette consists of mauve, copper, heather and gold. Can't go far without using gold in the interiors in 2020.

Bioheat Ireland was founded by two Tralee natives - Jonathan Boyle who has over 15 years in the stove business and is trusted and highly regarded in the industry and also Fintan O’Connell who has 20 years’ experience in retail and industry and is an accountant by trade. Why are bioethanol Fires becoming so popular recently? Bioethanol liquid fuel burns ‘cleanly’ producing no harmful carbon monoxide. This means no chimneys/flues are required to carry harmful emissions from the home. Is there real flame and heat – yes to both questions. Automatic bioethanol fires from Planika guarantee high performance unlike old manual models – real flames and heat for the home. Cost savings – as no chimney is required money will be saved by designing out chimneys in new builds, or by

closing off coal chimney & placing your bioethanol fire for renovations rather than expensive option of construction to bring chimney up certification. Widely used in home Fires across Europe for many years, the bioethanol option is free of the dangers of carbon monoxide and the recent move towards renewable fuel sources means government and public are now shifting away from fossil fuel types to renewable options such as bioethanol. Bioethanol is classified as a renewable fuel sourced from Agri biomass but more than that it is fire at the touch of a button, taking the work and hassle out of minding and cleaning a fire. To view a sample of our bioethanol fires please visit www.bioheat.ie For a brochure or more info email info@bioheat.ie By phone Fintan or Jonathan will help with your queries.

cushions I love cushions and consider a bed naked without them, but who has the time for all the flaffing required with a bed full of cushions? It's probably why I love a bolster cushion so much, all the style with no flffing required and a fabulous way to add colour and texture to your room.

Biggest names in motorcycle racing help Kevin Coyne after pitlane incident Coyne, 18, is contesting the championship for 13 to 23-year olds, considered a feeder series to the main British SuperBike championship, and this was his second meeting at this level. Last month he made his championship debut at Donington Park and he is the first Kerry rider to commit to this class. HEL Performance British Junior Supersport Championship races are run at the same meetings as the professional BSB series. On Sunday, while preparing for his second race and stationery in the pitlane, his Kawasaki was hit from behind by another rider who was unaware that the road ahead was congested. The incident damaged the gear lever and other parts of his race bike and it looked certain that he would not be able to make the start.

The mechanics from Paul Bird Motorsport Ducati spotted his plight and repaired his stricken machine just in time for the race start. The mechanics should have been celebrating with their professional riders Tommy Bridewell and Christian Iddon who had just taken second and third in the main race of the day, but they stopped their journey to the podium to help the young Kerry rider. Alan Irwin, father of top Irish rider Glenn Irwin, who had just won the feature British SuperBike race, also helped Coyne as he made his way to watch his son’s victory celebration. “We are so grateful,” Kevin’s father Mark said, “Without their help, there is no way we would have started the race and they certainly had more important things to be doing with their riders on the podium. We can’t thank them enough.” Their efforts were in vain, Coyne was forced to retire from the race after his bike suffered an electrical fault, an issue related to the pitlane incident. However, he was running as high as 17th overall, well inside his target of a top 20 finish, when he retired.

As schools begin the process of re-opening this week, students, teachers and parents are preparing to return to a very different school experience. Extensive work has been done in the past number of weeks by school management and staff to prepare the school buildings and routines so that everyone can be kept as safe as possible during Covid-19. I’m sure that no one could have foreseen a time that we would miss school so much. After months of being away from school, friends and teachers, it will be nice to see familiar faces in person instead of online but it is natural to feel nervous too. After any long break from school it can feel strange going back but the unprecedented change in our lives since we finished school on March 12 has challenged us to adapt to a new way of living, including preparing now for a new way of being in school. Students starting in first year can often feel very nervous about beginning in a new school, worried about settling in, finding your way around, getting lost, forgetting books, making new friends and missing old friends. Remember that this year every single one of us is facing a new and very different start so as the ‘newbies’ you are not alone. Schools have been extremely busy getting ready to prepare the physical school buildings to accommodate class groups and school staff. It is really important that all students, parents and teachers familiarise themselves with the documents that have been sent out by school outlining how things are

Returning to school - This year it’s new to everyone!

going to operate in the new school year. We are all returning to a different way of doing things – new timetables, staggered breaks, strict hygiene measures, one-way systems, face coverings, limited contact with the larger year group, social distancing and more! But even in a very different world some things stay the same. The health and wellbeing of everyone in the school is at the centre of how things will operate during the school day. Teachers and school management care deeply about how students settle in/settle back and about ensuring that you get the best possible educational experience, but teachers are nervous too. As students, parents and teachers we all have to be patient with each other as we adapt to the changes. The relationship

between students and teachers is so important for so many reasons and we all missed that direct contact with each other, likewise with classmates. By working together and following the guidelines set out nationally and indeed locally in each school we have the best chance of making this as close to a normal school year as we possibly can. For incoming 3rd and 6th years who are feeling anxious about time missed take consolation in the fact that the State Exams Commission have already make changes to assessments for the Junior and Leaving Cert examinations 2021. Your teachers will brief you on those when you return but the full detail can be found on https://www.education.ie/ en/Schools-Colleges/Information/Curriculum-and-Syllabus/assessment-arrangements-junior-cycle-and-leaving-certificate-examinations-2021.pdf Students beginning in 2nd year are bound to have felt unsettled by having your first year experience cut short but remember you have made good connections with teachers and classmates already so focus on looking forward to that reconnection. For those embarking on Transition year who may be concerned that it is not going to be as exciting and productive a year as you thought due to COVID-19 restrictions think about how creative schools have been already in adapting to our changed circumstances and put on your own cre-

ative thinking caps on to come up with ways that you can contribute to and get the most out of TY. Start by making a list of 5 personal goals for the year and think about how you might achieve them. Sign up on https:// ty.ie/ which has some great ideas and updates as does the TY section on the Exit Entry app which can be downloaded by checking out https://www.exitentry. com/schools/ For students starting in 5th year which lays the foundation for Leaving Cert try to settle into work as soon as possible and pace yourselves to work well this year and reap the rewards in 6th year. And for the Class of 2020 you are all still in our thoughts and connected to us as you await the results of your calculated grades. It has been a difficult year and you have lost out on some important milestones but you have our respect and admiration for how you have coped with that. You are still part of our school communities and can access school supports when results are issued on Monday the 7th of September. https://www.gov.ie/en/publication/ a04fc-advice-for-students-and-theirfamilies/ provides helpful information for students and parents about the return to school and the detailed information issued by schools in invaluable in preparing us all for our new start. Best of luck to everyone on your return!

Deputy Michael Healy Rae has called the practice of the National Ambulance Service (NAS) Call centre based in Dublin “ludicrous” when dealing with overflow calls to service North Kerry, when all Kerry ambulances are on a call. Currently the NAS call centre dispatches services from Kilrush in County Clare to service North Kerry calls as it is regarded a shorter trip than Ambulances from Limerick as NAS work off the nearest ambulance area but they fail to understand that the Clare service has to take a ferry to North Kerry. “When Kilrush get the call they tell them that is a ferry journey. They then transfer it to the Limerick area for the ambulance to dispatch but in one incident the ambulance did leave Kilrush, cross the ferry and went to Ballybunion to the call out. Like how ludicrous is that. It is simply causing confusion and leading to chaos,” Deputy Michael Healy Rae said. “This is one of the many faults of nationalising a service especially when people simply don’t know the lie of the land and this time wasted for an Ambulance crew will result in a loss of life as time is crucial.” ...........................................................

social distancing stickers

Fianna Fáil’s Michael Cahill has called on the Government to issue a supply of stickers with the message “TWO METRES APART” for use by members of all households. “ A close friend of mine suggested this to me some time ago, and more and more, I can see the merit in it” said the Rossbeigh based Councillor. “With students returning to schools and employees in large and small workforce’s constantly in the vicinity of other people, not to mind in social settings, I believe we all need reminding of the social distancing recommendations,”

Book features Killarney man's WW2 story A new book on a World War massacre will feature a Killarney man. 'Forged in Blood and Music' tells the story of the Lisbon Maru massacre and Kobe House in 1942. There were 60 Irishmen onboard the Lisbon Maru, 31 of whom were murdered (including William Thompson from Killarney), while another eight men died after arriving in Japan. Author Robert Widders, who has served in the Royal Navy, the Army, and the Royal Air Force, has previously written on Irish Prisoners of War in the Far East during World War 2. The Lisbon Maru was used by the Imperial Japanese Army in 1942 to transport 1816 POWs to Japan to be used as slave labour. A week later 828 of these men were dead, killed as a calculated act of murder.

Make sure you make time to treat your skin, book a facial or a body scrub. After the last few busy weeks of getting uniforms organised, school books sorted, lunch boxes ready to go. our skin care routine may have gone out the window. My biggest tip to glowing skin, is to do your cleansing, toning and moisturising any time after 6pm, no need to wait for just before bed, you’ll be tired and may just decide to skip it till the morning. Your night time routine is so important, known as, the sleep cycle. All day skin works hard to protect itself from constant attack, but while we’re sleeping skin switches into recovery mode, a time of intense repair and regeneration. The regeneration process can be up to

three times faster than during the day. Eight hours sleep and drinking two litres of water and really fight back the signs of ageing skin and dehydration. During sleep, your skins blood flow increases and the organ rebuilds it collagen and repairs damage From UV exposure, reducing wrinkle and age spots. Quality sleep is crucial to both skin health and your overall health. Both deep and rem sleep have been linked to cell and tissue repair, so getting shut eye can give to your skin an extra boost. Collagen is made while you snooze so getting more sleep can also help fight the appearance of wrinkle. An amazing night Cream, I’d highly recommend, Sothy’s detoxifying resurfacing overnight cream, infused with Vit. C For brightening , AHA ( alpha hydroxy acid) helps exfoliate while sleeping, hyaluronic acid ( hydration) and much more.

plicants should know that course capacities are lower for some courses which means fewer places are available. The message is: ‘Don’t Wait - Apply Now’,” said admissions officer John Herlihy. “This year in particular, it makes sense to stay local. For safety. For the local economy. Kerry is one of the safest counties to be in.” Kerry College is a fully integrated college of further education and training with four campus locations at Clash Road, Tralee, Denny Street, Tralee, Monavalley, Tralee and Church Street, Listowel.

GARDEN MAGIC

Gardening - By Debby Looney

Debby is available for advice and garden consultations, just call 086 6088156 or email barnhillky@gmail.com

Preparing for Autumn The transition between summer and autumn can be quite difficult to gauge – on the one hand, summer bedding looks shabby, but, to give it credit, it hangs on and tries to look good. Begonias are especially tenacious. Borders and herbaceous plants are falling over, but still in flower. My hands itch to reach for the secateurs, the shears and the bucket, to tidy up everything and start again, with clean pots and freshly cleared beds. However, this year I am waiting to gather seeds, especially of hardy geraniums, foxglove, Jacobs ladder, scabious and nigella. They all grew very well as wildflowers and I am hoping to perpetuate this patch. So in the meantime while waiting for seed to ripen I have to look at an awful mess. The shears will have to wait, but the secateurs are out, as this is the ideal time of year for taking semi-ripe cuttings. These are taken from this year’s growth, so should be woody, but still soft at the top. Why take cuttings? Well, it is a very cost effective way of obtaining plants, especially if you need a lot, for, say, a hedge. You are also ensured an exact replica of the plant you take the cutting from, as opposed to seeds you might save. Which is great if you have favourites. It is easy to take cuttings, you need very little. Just a plant, a sterile sharp knife or secateurs, and ideally rooting powder. Rooting powder contains hormones which stimulate the formulation of roots, as well as an antifungal component, preventing your cuttings from rotting. It comes as both a powder and a gel, both are equally effective. Never use too much, always shake off the excess. Always use material from a healthy disease free plant. Take cuttings in the morning, when the plant is not under

stress from sun. Place the pieces you cut into a plastic bag to prevent wilting. There are three types of cutting: the simplest method is cutting a piece just below a leaf, about 15cm long. Then there are heel cuttings, which is where you pull a side shoot away from the stem leaving a ‘heel’ which you then trim, and thirdly, basal cuttings, which are generally suitable for herbaceous plants. These are taken very near the base of the plant where there is a slight swelling. They have a high percentage success rate, as there are many hormones here. From wherever you take the cutting, trim the top and bottom, and remove the lower leaves. (If leaves are large, for example, hydrangea leaves, you can cut them in half. ) Dip the lower inch into rooting powder and tap off the excess. Have a pot ot tray prepared, using a mixture of cutting compost mixed with an equal amount of sand or perlite. Water well. Place your cuttings in a greenhouse, or under a clear plastic cover such as a polythene bag, to prevent drying out. Now the most difficult part: do not be tempted to pull them out to check if there are roots! Do check them regularly for disease or rotting leaves, and keep them clean and moist. Plants suitable for semi-ripe cuttings are: buxus, berberis, choisya, hebe, fatsia, privet, portugese laurel, bay tree, rosemary, lavender, conifers, solanum and passion flowers. Also euonymus, ceanothus and almost all herbaceous plants. All herbs and most evergreen plants are also suitable.

Ryanair set to pull key routes from Kerry Airport Kerry Airport is preparing to face into a bleak winter as the Covid-19 pandemic shows no sign of abating and the resulting restrictions on travel and gatherings continue to affect airline bookings. Ryanair have removed the Manchester and Berlin routes to Kerry from the schedule for September and October, while the Alicante summer route which was due to end in October will not operate from Monday next. Only 808 passengers travelled through the airport, all on the Aer Lingus Regional Kerry-Dublin route, during the second quarter of 2020 compared to 102,534 on all routes for the same quarter last year. The grounding of Ryanair flights between Kerry and Berlin, Frankfurt Hahn, London (Luton and Stansted) and Alicante throughout the three-month period was the main reason for such huge drop in

numbers. The new Kerry-Manchester route which was due to commence on March 29 did not get off the ground until the travel restrictions were lifted in July and, in normal circumstances, would have contributed to an increase in passenger numbers when comparing figures year-on-year. The said: “The figures are stark and the future is not bright. The Government has rowed back on the easing of restrictions at the same time as Ryanair announced a 20% reduction in flights in the autumn – affecting travel between Kerry and Manchester, Berlin and Alicante,” John Mulhern CEO at Kerry Airport, said. ”We are expecting to see further cuts to schedules as the winter months draw near. The devastating impact of the lockdown has been seen in the quarterly passenger figures across the entire aviation sector and we expect to see many more months, if not years, of toil ahead to recover fully.”

In loving memory of John Broderick Late of Reavaun, Currow, Killarney Who passed away on 28th August 2018 God’s Garden God looked around his garden And found an empty place. He knew that you were suffering. He knew you were in pain. He knew that you would never Get well on earth again. He saw the road was getting rough, And the hills were hard to climb. So he closed your weary eyelids, And whispered ‘’Peace be Thine’’. It broke our hearts to lose you But you didn’t go alone For part of us went with you The day God called you home. SHOWTIME • Crokes face Templenoe in tantalising quarter-final • Legion out for revenge against St Brendan’s • East Kerry All-Stars take on St Kieran’s

Eight will become four this weekend as the top teams in the county go headto-head in the quarter-finals of the Kerry Senior Football Championship. Round 1 was jam-packed with excitement, drama, thrills and spills. What does the next phase have in store?

DR CROKES V TEMPLENOE

It’s David versus Goliath in the pick of the quarter-final match-ups as Templenoe, one of the smallest clubs in the county, take on the might of the 13time champions, Dr Crokes. When you consider the tiny population they have to draw from, it’s verging on the miraculous that Templenoe even made it to the top flight of Kerry football in the first place. But make it they have and they announced their arrival in a big way last weekend by beating 2018 finalists Dingle in Round 1. Their reward for that historic win? A last eight match-up against the club who have won seven of the last 10 County Championships. If last weekend’s match was one of the biggest in the club’s history, things are about to get a whole lot bigger. Templenoe have four county players, a large number for a club of any size, and all four of them stepped up to the plate behind in a wet and windswept Páirc an Ághasaigh. Tadhg Morley, Gavin Crowley, Adrian Spillane and Killian Spillane form the spine of this team and all excelled in Round 1. It will take more of the same – and then some – to go one step further and shock the Crokes. The availability or otherwise of Adrian Spillane will be a big factor. The powerful midfielder went off injured last time out but as former Kerry manager

turned commentator Eamonn Fitzmaurice said on Saturday, Aidan is a hardy buck. Crokes had to make do without Gavin White and David Shaw for their opener against Stacks and although they fared well enough without them, manager Edmund O’Sullivan will naturally be hoping that his first choice centre back and full forward are back in action sooner rather than later. Buddy O’Leary and Billy Courtney played in their stead last time out and both will be on hand again this weekend if needs be. The odds will be against Templenoe in this one, but haven’t they always? They are punching above their weight in terms of the size of their club but on the pitch they have proven that they have the players to hold their own at the top table. Having said that, beating Stacks in such a tight game will have done wonders for Crokes’ confidence and they defeated this opposition by 1-18 to 0-10 as recently as five weeks ago. Templenoe may have tightened up in the meantime (having Morley back certainly helps) but they will find it tough to bridge that gap on Sunday. Verdict: Dr Crokes by three.

KILLARNEY LEGION V ST BRENDAN’S

Legion owe Brendan’s one, there’s no escaping that. The divisional side did a number on Legion at the same stage of last year’s competition, thanks in the main to a really good display by county star Diarmuid O’Connor. The rangy midfielder registered 1-2 from play and Ivan Parker and Eoghan

O’Brien added four points apiece as Brendan’s ran out 1-12 to 1-10 winners, and so endeth Legion’s championship aspirations for another year at least. The manner of the performance was below the standards the team from Derreen set for themselves and they would certainly love to make amends tomorrow evening. If they are to do so, they will need to negate the very potent threat of swashbuckling St Brendan’s full forward Ivan Parker. The Churchill marksman was in electrifying form against West Kerry as he fired over score after score en route to a personal tally of 0-9 (0-7 from play). Legion have a couple of options in defence but the job could well go to Kerry panelist Danny Sheahan, who revels in the role of destroyer. It will also be interesting to see who Legion match up with Jack Barry and O’Connor i lár na páirce. Man mountain Pádraig Lucey effectively cancelled out David Moran last weekend so perhaps Stephen Stack will ask him to repeat the trick against Barry, while the fit and agile Jack O’Neill could be tasked with grinding down O’Connor. The Tralee outfit are favourites with the bookies but if Legion have all of their star players available for selection, as they did against Rahilly’s, there could be another kick in them yet. Verdict: Legion by one.

EAST KERRY V ST KIERAN’S

Last year’s final had scarcely concluded before many observers began expressing their belief that East Kerry’s march towards back-to-back County Championships was an inexorable one. If you felt that way then, looking at the team-

sheet for their Round 1 match against Feale Rangers will have done little to dissuade you of that opinion. Adding three Kerry seniors – Shane Ryan and Paul Murphy of Rathmore and Dara Moynihan of Spa (injured in 2019) – to their starting line-up has made them even more formidable than before and it’s getting harder and harder to see anyone derailing them any time soon. St Kieran’s had a very good win over South Kerry in the first round with Paul Walsh, Eddie Horan and Thomas Hickey impressing but even if these guys play well again tomorrow evening, Kieran’s will struggle to contain Dara Moynihan, Paudie Clifford, Brendan O’Keeffe, Evan Cronin, David Clifford and Darragh Roche at the other end. That’s an All-Star forward line – an embarrassment of riches – and outscoring them is a very tall order indeed. Verdict: East Kerry by six.

KENMARE SHAMROCKS V MID KERRY

TOP MAN: Tony Brosnan will be hoping to lead Dr Crokes to victory over Templenoe. Pic: Brendan Moran/ Sportsfile.

Kenmare are in bonus territory, really. Their incredible victory over the Crokes a couple of weeks back means they have the Senior Club Championship final to look forward to regardless of what happens in the Kerry SFC. That being said, they had a solid win against Shannon Rangers in Round 1 and though they are slight underdogs in Round 2, you would be slow to bet against them. One serious concern for Shamrocks is an apparent dead leg picked up by their talisman, Seán O’Shea, which forced him off in the Rangers game. With fantasy football hero Dan McCarthy already out through injury, losing O’Shea would be even more disappointing than it might normally be. The whole of Kenmare will be lighting candles for him this week. Their opponents, Mid Kerry, are hoping to advance beyond the quarter-final stage for the first time since 2014. They reached the final that year before falling to Austin Stacks. The divisional side looked strong in their opening round win over Kilcummin and they appear to have the firepower up front to pose any team problems. Kenmare are also going well, so I can see this being a close one. Verdict: Draw. Mid Kerry AET.

It’s great to be | By Adam Moynihan

It was billed as the tie of the round as soon as the draw was made and it didn’t disappoint. Dr Crokes versus Austin Stacks had it all. You really couldn’t have asked for a better championship opener. The standard of football was extremely high, it was high-scoring, and there was great drama throughout. You would have feared for Crokes when it emerged that Gavin White and David Shaw were out, especially considering how strong Stacks looked against Legion, but credit to the Killarney club,

they put in a really good performance on the night. Tony Brosnan kicked some top class points and tucked his two penalties away nicely. A tally of 2-10 in a championship match should come as a shock but Tony has been so consistent in recent years, it almost comes as standard. I thought Gavin O’Shea was excellent against Stacks. He didn’t waste a ball and his composure, vision and range of passing got Crokes out of some sticky situations. He is perhaps underappreciated at times, perhaps because he doesn’t fit the bill of a modern-day half forward, but he proved on Friday that he has a role to

play on this team. Alongside him in the half forward line, Brian Looney was nothing short of immense. He has been Crokes’ standout player for me since we came out of the lockdown and he has continued that form into the County Championship. When you look at the ground he made up to score his goal, and the pace at which he moved to get there, there’s no way you would single him out as being the oldest player in a white and black jersey, but he was. Dr Crokes chairman Patrick O’Sullivan took to Twitter to sing Looney’s praises

after the match, describing him as “one of the greatest Crokes players to play the game. What he suffered tonight and to battle on… Legend.” O’Sullivan was referring, of course, to the arm injury that forced the veteran forward off in normal time. He reappeared for extra time clearly carrying that arm, but he soldiered on and played a huge part in Crokes’ win regardless. It was a performance for the ages by the evergreen No. 12. For Stacks’ part, they showed tremendous character to peg back a five-point deficit and force ET. Wayne Quillinan

PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK Tony Brosnan certainly caught they eye with his tally of 2-10 but as impressive as he was, it’s hard to ignore what his teammate did in the same game. Brian Looney was spectacular against Stacks, covering every blade of grass before goaling and injuring himself in the same passage of play in the 54th minute. He was subbed off and his night appeared to be done, but he re-emerged for extra time and his fantastic left-footed point was crucial.

back

Adam Moynihan reviews a thrilling opening weekend of action in the Kerry Senior Football Championship

sprang Seán Quilter from the bench late on and the powerful target man wreaked havoc, kicking five points in total. Rockies midfielder Joe O’Connor has emerged this year as arguably one of the most promising talents in the county, and he was also to the fore. O’Connor has a tremendous engine and he has done gaisce in his championship outings to date. One would imagine that Kerry manager Peter Keane is keeping a very close eye on his progress. All told it was a huge win for the Crokes and it should prove to be a major boost to their confidence. One sour note was the bizarre red card that was issued to Micheál Burns but I would expect that by the time you’re reading this, it will have been rescinded.

LEGION

After an indifferent start, the Killarney Legion took full advantage of the first water break to recuperate and subsequently take charge of Sunday’s tense match-up against Rahilly’s. Conor Keane unselfishly teed up Donal Lyne in the 25th minute and Lyne gave the keeper the eyes before firing a wellplaced shot to the back of the net. It was a goal that Legion needed and they led at half-time thanks in part to two fine scores by half back Rob Leen. Conor Hayes and Jack Savage sparkled at times for Strand Road while Cormac Coffey marshalled James O’Donoghue about as well as James O’Donoghue can be marshalled. Having said that, O’Donoghue still popped up with three crucial points from play. Coffey was lucky to avoid a red card at one stage after a blatant strike, and another Rahilly’s player

escaped punishment for a loose enough swing moments later, but it mattered little in the end as Legion held on for the win. There was no such good fortune for neighbours Kilcummin as they crashed out after a double scores defeat to Mid Kerry. Everything that could have went wrong for Kilcummin did on the day and they were well beaten by a fairly decent-looking Mid Kerry side. Gavan O’Grady of Glenbeigh-Glencar is a lovely footballer when he gets going and with Liam Carey of Beaufort and Fiachra

Clifford of Laune Rangers in toe, not to mention Darran O’Sullivan, they look as strong as they have done for some time. Dan Leary’s side now have the relegation playoff to “look forward to”. That match will be fixed whenever Templenoe’s involvement in the Kerry SFC comes to an end.

TOO STRONG

East Kerry versus Feale Rangers was the only Round 1 game that I didn’t get to see but, by all accounts, there wasn’t a whole pile to write home about. As expected, the defending champions were far too

strong for Rangers as they coasted to a 14-point win. Darragh Roche (1-3) and David Clifford (0-6) top-scored on the day as the Rathmore trio of Shane Ryan, Paul Murphy and Brendan O’Keeffe made their first appearances in the red of East Kerry. Some East Kerry players were keen to inform me on Instagram that a teammate of theirs, who will remain nameless, missed an open goal in this game, but the teammate in question refutes this in the strongest possible terms. In fact, he says it was someone else. It appears as though someone did miss a glaring opportunity but with no hard facts available, and to avoid the risk of causing a potentially fatal rift within the camp, I’ll have to let it slide. Templenoe had a memorable first outing at senior level as they pulled off the shock of the round by defeating Dingle in Páirc an Ághasaigh. Their Kerry contingent came up trumps on the day with Killian Spillane kicking 1-5, a goal and three points of that tally coming from play. Elsewhere, St Brendan’s had Ivan Parker to thank for their four-point victory over West Kerry. The Churchill forward notched a string of super scores in the final quarter on his way to a personal total of 0-9. St Kieran’s got the better of South Kerry with Paul Walsh, Eddie Horan and Thomas Hickey accounting for the majority of their scoring in a hardfought win. And finally, Club Championship finalists Kenmare Shamrocks had enough in the tank to see off the challenge of Shannon Rangers, despite losing star man Seán O’Shea to an apparent dead leg.

Celtic manager hails ‘phenomenal’ youths as Killarney club clinch first ever national title Killarney Celtic have reached the Promised Land. After years of close calls and hard luck stories, at both senior and underage level, The Celts have finally secured the national soccer title that they craved so badly. And they couldn’t have done it in more spectacular circumstances. Sunday’s final was played behind closed doors in line with COVID-19 restrictions but everyone watching online was treated to one of the most dramatic games of football you are ever likely to see. Douglas Hall of Cork certainly proved worthy opponents and went ahead in the sixth minute when James Daly found the target following a well-worked set piece. It was a lead they would hold until the 57th minute when Cian Doe’s corner evaded everyone, including goalkeeper Antonio Ancheta, to find its way into the back of the net. All of a sudden, Celtic were back in business. Hall responded professionally, however, and they retook the lead through substitute Cormac Kelly in the 65th minute. The seconds ticked away and, as they did, it looked for all the world as though Celtic were heading for yet more heartache on the national stage. Thankfully Man of the Match Pádraic Looney didn’t read the script and his header levelled matters with just seven minutes remaining. Extra time loomed large but The Hoops weren’t satisfied with the draw and when skipper Terry Sparling came up big to make it 3-2 moments later, the boys from Killarney were in dreamland. There was still time for a sting in the tail, however, and the Cork side forced overtime thanks to another dramatic equaliser, this one coming from the boot of Kelly WE DID IT: Killarney Celtic players celebrate following their historic FAI Youth Cup final victory over Douglas Hall. CELTIC WIN 3-2 ON PENS MOUNTHAWK PARK in the 94th minute. With no deciding goal forthcoming in extra time, the match went to penalties. A crazy finale was about to get even crazier. Hoops nerves were jangling at home and abroad but Celtic keeper Adam Carey settled those jitters by saving Hall’s first attempt. After the match, Carey told the Killarney Advertiser that it was the first penalty he had ever saved in a shootout, and perhaps the adrenaline got to him slightly because seconds later his own effort was saved by his counterpart in the Douglas Hall goal. Redemption would be swift, however, as Carey made two more superb stops, the latter from Justin Equaibor’s effort setting Celtic up for the win. Emmett O’Shea calmly stepped up to take his team’s fifth and final kick and with the FAI Youth Cup on the line, the Fossa

youngster made no mistake. After a truly incredible final, Killarney Celtic were officially the best in the land. As the players gathered to celebrate their win and pose for photos, they held aloft the No. 6 shirt of their late teammate Niall McGillicuddy, who sadly died two years ago after a short battle with illness. It was a fitting and moving tribute to their fondly-remembered friend.

CHANGE

Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser in the aftermath of their historic triumph, Celtic manager Matt Keane said a crucial last-minute change led to O’Shea taking the match-winning penalty. “Emmett was actually supposed to be third and someone else was fifth, but I switched them because I just knew Emmett would score the last one,” Keane revealed. “He’s as cool as a breeze. You could even see it with his celebration. Not a bother to him.” It was an unforgettable game and Keane, who is a key member of the club’s senior team, said he went through “every emotion under the sun” over the course of a gripping 110 minutes plus penalties. “It was unbelievable. It must have been the best game of soccer ever played in Mounthawk Park in Tralee. It was up and down, we were behind and we were ahead… It was crazy. When we conceded that 90th-minute goal, I felt like crying myself. But we got the boys in and we tried to pick them up, and luckily we got

over the line in the end. “It was great to win the shootout because we’ve been unlucky as a club with penalties in the last few years. If anyone deserves the credit, it’s Adam Carey. That man is training seven nights a week. He hasn’t missed a session all season and he has been doing extra training with Mike Gustafik. He’s a great lad.” Most of this talented squad will now move on to adult football and while Keane would like to see them graduate to the Celtic A team (where he could play alongside them), he feels as though they should have loftier aspirations than that. “I would be hopeful that they go on to play for Celtic of course – in one or two years you could put that entire team in for the seniors – but I can see some of them doing more than just playing for Celtic. Some of these guys could easily play League of Ireland.” But that’s all ahead of them. For now, Keane, his players and his backroom team of Jerry Falvey, Conor McCarthy, Diarmuid Daly and Stefan McMahon will bask in the glory of the club’s first ever All-Ireland crown. “We sat down at the start of the year and we set ourselves the goal of winning a national title. We’re delighted that we managed to achieve it and I think it was well-deserved. This is a phenomenal group of lads.”

KILLARNEY CELTIC: Adam Carey; Emmet Cronin, Pádraic Looney, Jason Kerins, Cian Doe; James Darmody, Evan Looney; Erin Moloney, Conor Henderson, Dylan O’Callaghan; Terry Sparling. Subs (used): Emmett O’Shea, Ruairí Doyle, Craig Boyle O’Sullivan, Godwin Osieba, Jackson O’Mahony. Subs: Jack O’Donoghue, Keelan O’Brien, Dylan Falvey, Paul O’Sullivan, Stefan Lajtar.

JORDAN LEE

MEDALIST: Killarney high jumper Jordan Lee competing for Ireland at the European Championships. Lee was "really pleased" with his performance at last weekend's Nationals. Pic: Sportsfile.

I don’t want to be recognised as just a great athlete for my disability. I want to be recognised as a great athlete full stop.

Lee shines at Nationals Killarney high jumper claims silver in able bodied competition An impressive jump of 1.90m was enough to secure a silver medal for Jordan Lee at the National U23 Athletics Championships which were held at the Morton Stadium in Santry last weekend. Lee was competing against able bodied athletes at the prestigious event and once again he showed that he can mix it with anyone in the country. His best attempt on the day was second only to that of Ciarán Connolly at the U23 grade, and it was also good enough for an eighth place finish in the senior event, which was won by David Cussen. The talented Killarney man is now ranked second in the WPA World Rankings. Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser this week, the Killarney Valley AC man said he was happy with his performance on the day. “My goal heading into the event was to jump 1.90m, which I ultimately did,” he said. “That’s something I was really pleased about. Over the past couple of months, I’ve been working really diligently on the technical aspects of my

approach and when you’re working on anything technical, especially in athletics and the high jump, it takes a while. It’s a process; it isn’t going to happen just like that. “It’s frustrating at times but it all came together last weekend. I have lots of positives to take out of it. I feel like I’m in PB shape but I’m still working on a couple of technical things. Once I get them right, I feel like I can jump a PB in the near future.” Lee, who won bronze at the World Para Athletics European Championships in 2018, is keen to prove himself in competitions like the National Championships as he strives to earn recognition as a top athlete, as opposed to “just” a top para athlete. “It means an awful lot to me to win medals in able bodied competition. It’s definitely something that I’m constantly trying to get across to people: I don’t want to be recognised as just a great athlete for my disability. I want to be recognised as a great athlete overall. Full stop. I’m trying to follow in the footsteps of people like Jason Smyth, who is visually impaired

and is the second fastest man in Irish history. “It’s great that I’m finally starting to get that recognition that I’m a good overall athlete, as opposed to just being restricted to competing in para competition.”

RIGHT TIME

Just like every other athlete in the country, Jordan is delighted to be back competing again after the lockdown and he says the reopening of his training facilities came at just the right time for him. “The opening of the track has been a huge help,” he said. “Actually being able to get proper contact on a track surface and to get that feeling of jumping over a bar has been a massive benefit. The plyos and all the training that I’ve done during lockdown have definitely helped me in the long run, but it was getting to the stage where I needed the feeling of jumping over a bar again.” Looking ahead to the coming months and his ongoing preparations for next year’s European Championships and, of course, the Paralympics, Lee says much will depend on COVID-19.

“Myself and my coach Tomás (Griffin) are going to sit down in the coming days to see what the plan of attack will be. We’re aware that the Northern Irish Championships are on in mid-September and that is something that we might target, but we’ll have to suss out the logistics of that. We have to see if athletes from the Republic will be allowed to compete due to COVID regulations etc. “Sunday could potentially have been my last competition of the year, which is a shame because I’ve only competed twice since the World Championships last November. It takes a couple of competitions to get into that good form. I definitely feel like I’m in PB shape. I just need to utilise my speed a bit more coming in towards the bar. Once I unlock that, I think I’ll jump a new personal best - hopefully two metres.”

PARALYMPICS

This time 12 months from now, the Paralympic Games will be held in Tokyo and though it’s still a long way away, Lee admits that the prospect of representing his country on the biggest stage is lingering at the back of his mind. “An athlete’s ultimate ambition is to become an Olympian and that is a huge possibility over the next couple of months. I have an extra year to improve and develop. It’s exciting to say the least. “I just need to keep the head down – I have the Europeans beforehand and I’d be hoping for gold there – but it does give me goosebumps every time I hear the Paralympics being mentioned.” Meanwhile, Lee’s 16-year-old teammate Sam Griffin, son of coach Tomás, is the youngest athlete to make the national rankings following his sixth place finish in the National U23 Championships. The long jumper came 15th in the senior competition with a jump of 5.62m.

CALL-UP: Jamie O'Sullivan in action for the Scotts Lakers. The Killarney youngster has been selected to play for the Ireland U18s. Pic: Eamonn Keogh.

O’Sullivan named in Ireland squad Talented Killarney basketballer Jamie O’Sullivan has earned a callup to the Ireland U18 squad as the team builds towards the rescheduled European Championships for Small Countries, which are due to take place in Limerick next summer. The St Paul’s youngster made his debut for the club’s senior team, the Scotts Lakers, in Division 1 of the National League during the 2019/20 season and, despite his tender years, he impressed his teammates and coaches whenever he was on the floor. Evidently O’Sullivan has also caught the eye of Irish head coach Paul Kelleher and the 17-year-old will join up with a very strong-looking Ireland roster

that includes no fewer than seven foreign-based players. Among those Irishmen based abroad are 6’9” forward/centre ND Okafor who is with the NBA Academy in Mexico. Also currently playing in the USA are Ryan Djoussa, Clinton Efinda and Silas Sunday. Sunday, a 7’1” centre, is one of 13 uncapped players in the squad. Two of the squad are playing in England: Barking Abbey forward Aodhán Daly and John Madejski Academy forward Roniel Oguekwe. Guard Mobi Ikegwuruka, who is in the Czech Republic with the Get Better Academy, is also selected. O’Sullivan, a 6’4” forward, is one of 18 Ireland-based players who made the cut.

F assbender’s Le Mans dream hit by COVID restrictions

Michael Fassbender’s European Le Mans series has been hit by pandemic-related restrictions. His third race in Europe’s premiere endurance championship was due to take place in Barcelona this weekend but problems there have forced a rethink. Instead, the series will, on Sunday, return to the Paul Ricard Circuit in France, the venue for his first race with the Proton Competition team last month. With his teammates Richard Lietz and Felipe Fernandez Laser, he finished in seventh place on that occasion. “It took me five laps to find my rhythm [at Paul Ricard],” he said. "After that, my times got significantly better." Fassbender’s main goal is the 24 Hours of Le Mans next year and this season’s progress will form part of his ‘Road to Le Mans’ YouTube documentary. The Fossa

man is currently fourth in the GT Championship standings. |

F iries man Browne heads to Finland

Johan Kristoffersson and Richard Browne head to Finland this weekend for rounds three and four of the World Rallycross Championship as series leaders. The FIA World Rallycross Championship got underway last weekend at the Holjes circuit in Sweden. The two-day event marked the return of Firies motorsport engineer Browne, who is in charge of Johan Kristoffersson’s attempt to win a third world title. Browne is an engineer with Volkswagen Motorsport in Hanover in Germany and was in Sweden to oversee Kristoffersson, who is chasing a record world title in the discipline. The Volkswagen Polo driver capitalised on wet conditions to take a dominant victory on Saturday but had to settle for third on Sunday.

The striking new jersey, which will be worn exclusively in the 2020/21 Heineken Champions Cup after this weekend’s initial launch, includes two stars above the Munster Rugby crest for the first time, to mark the club’s 2006 and 2008 European title wins. Supporters will also notice the club’s motto, ‘Stand Up And Fight’, embossed on the jersey neckline. The club say that the heatmap print on the shirt “honours the passion and pride of [Munster] fans from every corner of

the world”. “Working closely with our partners Life Style Sports and adidas, we are delighted to reveal our newest European adidas kit, and no doubt our supporters are equally as excited to see the latest jersey,” Dave Kavanagh, Head of Commercial and Marketing at Munster Rugby, said. “In what will be a unique occasion, we look forward to seeing the players wearing the new kit earlier than usual when lining out at the Aviva on Sunday.” The new jersey is now available for pre-order on the Munster Rugby website or exclusively from Life Style Sports. It will be available to buy in stores or online from September 21.
