Coronavirus: ‘Act now or lose entire tourist season’ says Councillor Donal Grady
A local councillor has warned the Government to take immediate action to prevent the spread of Coronavirus saying it could have far-reaching effects on the tourist industry in the town. | By Sean Moriarty Cllr Donal Grady has also warned that if the disease reaches Ireland, patients would need to be quarantined - and with the current overcrowding situation in Irish hospitals alternative accommodation would have to be sought. He warned that Killarney could be used as a quarantine centre given the large number of hotels in the town and that many of them have yet to re-open for the upcoming tourist season. “We need to do what we did in the year of the Foot and Mouth and stop all gatherings of people until this blows over,” he said. “Yes, we will all lose money in the short-term, but if we take action now we can be open properly in a month’s time.” Grady was reacting to the news the Ireland and Italy Six Nations rugby match, scheduled for next weekend, has been postponed. So far, this is the only decisive action taken by a Government agency after the Department for Transport, Tourism and Sport officials met with Irish Rugby Union officials this week. Site Location.
Public information is very unclear and while the Department of Health has issued guidelines there seems to no clear plan and Grady questioned why other agencies were not taking the same level of action. “I was with my pharmacist this morning and he has not been advised by the HSE,” added the veteran councillor. Members of the public are concerned about their own travel plans but when the Killarney Advertiser contacted a number of different Killarney-based travel agencies they declined to comment about the current situation. A group of 35 from St Brendan’s Secondary School returned from a trip to Borneo in Italy near infected region Lombardi, on February 15. School Principal Sean Coffey told the Killarney Advertiser that as soon as they became aware of the outbreak they contacted the HSE who put them in touch with the Department of Public Health of specific notifiable diseases. “The incubation period is between seven and 14 days – the last day is today.

We were back the 15th and the first case was the 21st. The department advised us what to look for. All parents are aware of where their sons were and we asked people to report any concerns.” Local tourism bosses were also reluctant to comment on the situation when asked by the Killarney Advertiser, including members of the Kerry Branch of the Irish Hotel Federation. However, the national press office for the IHF issued the following statement. “While no cases have been reported in Ireland to date, we are putting in place measures for our members to mitigate the potential risks posed to public health. It is too early to determine the economic impact that the global outbreak will have on our sector.”
Deer cull underway in National Park | By Sean Moriarty Public access will be restricted in certain parts of Killarney National Park on March 4 and March 11 to allow deer culling. The National Parks and Wildlife Services (NPWS) will be carrying out a limited, daytime cull of deer in the vicinity of Knockreer Park. As part of this exercise it will be necessary to temporarily restrict public access to certain areas of the Park between 6.30am and 11.30am on each of these days. Knockreer Demesne, Knockreer, Reen, Prospect, Ballydowney and Belleview will be closed to all public access during these operations. “For reasons of public safety, it is important that there is no pedestrian, cyclist, vehicular or horse-drawn carriage access to these sites and we ask that members of the public heed all warnings signs,” a spokesperson for the NPWS said. The first cull carried out by NPWS rangers took place on Wednesday of this week. Killarney enjoys a love-hate relationship with Ireland’s oldest mammal. Deer are an important part of the tourist experience but growing numbers have led to calls for culls as deer frequently wander into the town centre and they have been blamed for several road traffic accidents – some fatal – in recent years. The local deer population is estimated to be in the region of 1,500, including 1000 red deer and a further 500 sika.

MINI RING CYCLE: With the help of comedian Bernard Casey, St Francis Special School in Beaufort organised their own special Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle on the Saint Mary of the Angels campus on Tuesday. Cyclists included children, Rhys O’Mahony, Emma Murphy, Hugh McCarthy, along with staff, Emma Cremin, Fiona Carroll, Mary O’Riordan. Photo: Valerie O’Sullivan
Mini Ring of Kerry cycle delights local school children It was a scaled down version of the Ring of Kerry Cycle – but it brought sheer delight to over 50 children in one local school on Tuesday. | By Michelle Crean Pupils from St Francis Special School, one of the main beneficiaries of this year’s Ring of Kerry Cycle (RoK), excitedly took part in the event and passed along the iconic stops along the way including the Cahersiveen food station, Coomakista for a set dance and the all-important medical station. The event, which started at 11am, saw the children undertake the 1km cycle of the ‘Ring’ alongside teachers and others, on the grounds of St Mary’s of the Angels campus which they share. “They can’t cycle the Ring so we brought the Ring to them,” Fiona Carroll, who was one of the main organisers of the event, told the Killarney Advertiser.
St Francis Special School provides educational services to pupils aged between four and 18 years who have been assessed to have a moderate, severe or profound general learning disability. “It was about our children experiencing the world for themselves.” And everything on the day was a mini version of the real RoK including the official start line brought by Padraig Treacy, David O’Sullivan Cycles gave the use of bikes to accommodate those who couldn’t cycle themselves, Paul Curtis looked after the repair station, Denis Daly took care of the Cahersiveen food station, as well as Radio Kerry’s Brendan Fuller from Killarney, while comedian Bernard Casey kept them all laughing. “We had brack and bananas – all the
things you typically see on the cycle.” Organisers even found a way to recreate the height at Coomakista, which is the hardest part of the real cycle. “We found a bit of height at the grotto and one of the teachers made up a road sign and they did set dancing there.” Cathal Walshe who is infamous with the annual RoK summer cycle was MC on the day. “He gave a running commentary. He made it sound so real calling the children by their names. It was absolutely brilliant. It was one of those days that gave us a lift.” She added that the children each received a RoK community garda medal for their participation. “We’re going to keep it going and complete the 175km Ring of Kerry over the coming months. We are also going to contact companies to sponsor a child.”
Killarney Golf and Fishing Club says it is business as usual at the Lackabane Course despite parts of the Killeen Course being under several feet of water after recent heavy rain fall. The 1st, 10th and 18th holes are particularly affected after rising water from Lough Leane spilled onto parts of the Killeen course. Staff at the world-famous course are taking the issues in their stride, and while the Killeen Course remains out of bounds until water levels drop, the Lackabane Course and the driving range remain open. “We can’t do anything about it. The lake is very full,” Sales and Marketing Manager Meg Dalton told the Killarney Advertiser. “February is a quiet month anyway, but our members do enjoy winter golf. We will take it as it comes, we are looking forward to when our season starts properly in April, until then, as the lake drops back we will drop back [to the Killeen course]. In the meantime Lackabane is still open.”
One road closes as another one opens | By Sean Moriarty The Moll’s Gap road is to close from Monday morning for two weeks - to facilitate works at a retaining wall near the famous tunnel – known as The Cutting on the N71 between Killarney and Kenmare. Part of the retaining wall has collapsed near the tunnel but as the road is so narrow there it is necessary to fully close the road to allow the repairs. Motorists are being asked to follow a dedicated diversion route via the R569 road at Loo Bridge.
This road reopened at 5pm yesterday evening (Thursday). It was closed for emergency repair works following a landslide during Storm Denis earlier this month. “Since the road partially collapsed on February 9, Council staff and contractors have been working in difficult weather conditions to ensure the repairs were completed as quickly as possible,” said a Council spokesperson. Meanwhile, the works on the Moll’s Gap road will commence on Monday. These works were postponed pending the completion of repairs on the R569 road and are now expected to be completed by March 16.

Killarney Library have arranged a series of kiddies events including story-time at 10.30am followed by a treasure hunt at 11am. At 3pm, there will also be a guided tour of the library for adults. There will also be a free autism workshop ‘Get Autism Active’ - an adult event and requires prior booking due to the limited spaces facilitated by lecturer and researcher Dr Susan Crawford, from 10am – 4pm. The workshop will explore the basic skills of movement including running, throwing, catching, balance and how to observe, teach and assess Fundamental
Movement Skill (FMS) in children and adults with ASDM. It will also show how improving FSM can help prevent long term health issues, improve verbal skills and increase opportunities for social engagement and independence for people with ASD. “The talks have been very well attended at the library,” Hazel Norris at the Killarney Library told the Killarney Advertiser. “We are delighted to see people engaging with these talks. We are thrilled to get such speakers with such high academic knowledge to come in to us. We encourage everyone to attend and it’s all free of charge.”
Next Friday (March 6) there’ll be plenty of pots of coffee on the go as one local group has plans for a big fundraiser. | By Grigoriy Geniyevskiy The Killarney South Kerry branch of the Irish Cancer Society will hold a coffee morning to raise valuable funds for its service. The coffee morning will take place at the Towers Hotel from 10.30am to 12.30pm. Raffles and spot prizes will be available on the day as well as a guest speaker.
The money raised will be going towards Night Nurses, their Freephone Helpline, as well as Drive to Care and cancer research. “Everyone’s invited and we’re looking forward to it,” Eugene O’Sullivan told the Killarney Advertiser. Daffodil Day also takes place on March 27. Contact Eugene O’Sullivan at 087 6866337 and Eleanor O’Doherty at 086 2388573.
Wheelchair user calls on public to be more considerate in town | By Grigoriy Geniyevskiy A member of a Killarney disability access group is calling on the public to be more considerate in town. Killarney’s wheelchair users say more needs to be done to make the town more accessible as obstructions on footpaths, the lack of adequate taxis for their needs, and the abuse of disabled parking spaces causes huge problems
for them. Aileen O’Sullivan, one of the members of the Killarney Access Group, told the Killarney Advertiser about her experience in the town. She travels from place to place relying on others saying that nine times out of 10 she’s dependent on the kindness of other people. She raised the topic of street furniture, bins and signage left out on the street saying they pose huge obstacles for her and others, and the lack of suitable taxis

for people with wheelchairs is also a big concern. “Most of the taxis that are in Killarney, they won’t take you in a manual chair,” Aileen told the Killarney Advertiser. In terms of access she added that College Street is one of the worst to get around. “Delivery vans and trucks just park anywhere. I’m not knocking Killarney or the services here, we’re getting better, but we’ve a very long way to go yet. We’ve come on in leaps and bounds, but there’s still an awful lot to be done.” To see what Aileen goes through in town, check out our video on our FB page.

Brave trio to take to the skies
This Sunday three brave women are planning to jump 13,000 feet out of a plane - all in aid of a Kerry charity.
| By Michelle Crean Marie O'Sullivan, Stephanie Horan and Lauren Fitzell are amongst 87 people from across Kerry who will take the leap of faith at the Irish Parachute Club in Edenderry over three days for Recovery Haven’s biggest ever fundraisers to date. The charity, celebrating 10 years this year, has been completely overwhelmed by the outpouring of support for their inaugural skydive event, which was initially supposed to take place on Leap Year day, February 29, but was extended to three days due to phenomenal demand. Marie, who is a Slimming World consultant in Killarney, roped in two members for the thrilling adventure. “We’ve never done a skydive before,” Marie, who lost six stone, told the Killarney Advertiser this week. “When this popped up the pull for me was huge. I always wanted to do a skydive but couldn’t as I was obese for
years.” Marie was aged eleven when her mom passed away from cancer. It had a huge impact on her life leading to a life of weight issues. “The weight held me back my whole life. I had no confidence and was embarrassed because of my size. My mom died aged 42, the age I am now. Recovery Haven is close to my heart and I’m more than delighted to do it.” In total the girls have raised a whopping €5,400 in just three weeks. Marie raised €2,200, Stephanie €1,800 and Lauren €1,400. For Stephanie, who is a teacher in St Brigid’s Killarney, the challenge is huge but worth it. “I had a family member who passed away from cancer and a family member currently availing of the RH service. I can’t say enough about them.” Lauren, who lost five stone, added that it’s a chance to give something back.

Great sadness at the passing of popular Dan McSweeney | By Sean Moriarty Tributes have been paid to Pinewood man Dan McSweeney who died this week. Dan was a popular member of staff at MD O’Shea and Sons Builder Merchants, an active member of Killarney and District Motor Club and an ardent Kerry GAA fan. He worked in the tool department of the well-known hardware store on the Park Road and was well respected for his knowledge of power tools. “He had a great technical knowledge, anything that had an engine or a motor, Dan had a great understanding,” said Paul O’Shea of the family firm. “We had great days working alongside him and he will be missed greatly. He was best-known for working in the tool department but we could ask him to work in any section of the business and he was always willing to help.” He was a long-time member of Killarney and District Motor Club and won the club’s 'Person of the Year' award in 2008. He also won the Rally of the Lakes Silver Wheel Award in 2014, a coveted award presented to people who go above and beyond the call of duty on behalf of the

county’s biggest motorsport event. He was best known for marshalling on Moll’s Gap but held several other roles including radio operator and deputy stage commander on the famous stage. Outside of the rally he acted as clerk of the course for the club’s Autocross and Autotest events. “Every event the club sent marshals to, you can be sure Dan was there,” said neighbour and fellow KDMC member Johnny Hickey. “He did it purely for the love of it and for the social side of it all.” He was also a dedicated volunteer on big events like the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle and Darkness into Light charity walk.

Columnist ANNE LUCEY gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry and beyond
The wheels of power grind slowly in Killarney
We are sitting ducks in Killarney. Some €800,000 has been spent already on the Island of Geese in Tralee - just in design and clearing the site alone! Then there is a teenager’s facility that is to be developed; the tenders that are to go out for a new events and conference centre on a Council owned site near the popular Rose Hotel, in the county capital. Is it time to question the investment in Tralee that seems to be happening just because it is designated the “county town” under a system of governance thought up by the colonial masters in the 19th century? Back in the day Killarney was part of the Cork and west Cork region. Tralee was more naturally part of Limerick.
INVESTMENT
It may be time we had a look at regional rather than county structures again. The investment in Tralee is not merited, footfall wise. Currently there is an outcry in Tralee about businesses closing. No-one wants to live in the town, or set up in business in the centre - despite attractive grants. The State is pumping millions, tens of millions into Tralee, while hugely pop-
ular Killarney is bypassed. The wheels of power wield grindingly slow in fair Cill Airne. Put aside the fact an estimated €40m of public money for capital projects has been pumped into empty Tralee in less than a decade, Killarney which is buzzing like Grafton Street is in the tuppenny ha'penny place. There seems to be no appetite for much needed public facilities like a much bigger modern library and a natural history museum for Killarney. Car parking at funerals and school time is a nightmare and is nowhere near resolution. This is Library Week - where is the bigger library we were all promised 15 years ago? Now, I had a quick scan at recent announcements for Tralee, and they are overwhelmingly Lee side - Tra Lí being built on the River Lee. Let’s just take the first five weeks of this year: a new €47,000 extension to Tralee Town Park (January 27), submission invited for new strategy on Tralee
Town Park, and a survey (separate) January 14, new Tralee to Fenit Walkway opens (January 7), Island of Geese first plans and public consultation (February 20), add to this the revamp of the relatively new €2m empty town square. I can’t see any announcements for Killarney in the period.
BURNING ISSUES
Yet we have burning issues: roads, parking, traffic strategy, the now 20-year-old plans for the Arás Phádraig, or is it 30? Where are the plans for a town museum? We need an attractive town square meeting area for Killarney. We have no bowling alley. And there is demand for all of this from the bottom up. Instead, much public property has been sold off in this town. Now St Finan’s is to be flogged. This kind of thing is held onto dearly in Tralee and more importantly public sites are developed. Even if people are rattling around in them saying hello to themselves in mirrors! Maybe some of our Killarney councillors are too posh to push - to push Killarney that is - but they really must get into gear. Push the Tralee TDs and the
History will surely tell History never repeats itself exactly. Remember the thing about Hitler and Russia - if he had studied his history and read about 1812 and Napoleon, he would not have become bogged down in Moscow. Well, I can’t help seeing correspondences between the rise and rise of Sinn Féin and other political movements right up to the present. There is nationalism. There is socialism. There is appeal to “workers”, and there are damned good orators. Above all there is the vacuum left by a very naive establishment. Nigel Farage’s UKIP party, came out of nowhere, apparently. But did it? UKIP was listening to the grumblings.
Is it the case that a complacent governing class ignores and tries to paper over cracks? Rather than track and deal with how people are thinking, it concentrates on how they should think. It happened in Germany too, with disastrous consequences in the ‘30s when the national socialist workers party there rocketed from 12 seats to 107 in a mere 12 years. They still didn’t have enough to govern, but they managed it - remember? I don’t buy the efforts to scare monger with Sinn Féin’s recent violent past, and I think it far more likely the fear in establishment circles is we might all learn just who got the big property write offs via National Asset Management Agency (NAMA)! But I am wary. That party has been no
friend of the free press and has sued and complained newspapers and journalists regularly. But are their rallies “bullying” as Leo Varadkar suggests. Are the “rallies” in Cork etc., of the kind of flag weaving rallies in the German beer halls? Sinn Féin argue what is involved are O’Connell type monster meetings. What Leo really needs to do, if he feels democracy is under threat, is get serious about going into Government with Fianna Fáil. He needs to forget about his R&R for himself and his ministers having a nap on the opposition benches. If he is really spooked by SF, he simply can’t sit back like the old Weimar Republic. But does Leo believe SF are such a threat? Or is it all mere rhetoric? History will surely tell.
Kilgarvan TDs and the mid-Kerry TDs. I keep saying it, not since John O’Donoghue has there been a TD batting in a big way for Killarney. Yes, we have pothole politicians, people who have contacts in hospitals, and great talkers - but that is about it. We have no big influence, and no big project or vision.
NOT MEASURING UP In some ways the attitude to Killarney is typical of all state agencies, and most Oireachtas members, towards the private sector, the small private sector - bleed them to death because they are good at business! Tralee is a public sector town - it has the three biggies of health, education and local authority. In Killarney it is a case of chase the businesses here for every penny and then dole it out on top down white elephant projects does anyone now remember the Jeanie Johnson? Did someone mention this election was all about change. Well, it may be time to look at the old regional structure instead of the English county structure. The county structure for Killarney and most of south Kerry is not measuring up.
Is Coronavirus a threat to tourism? Nothing since Foot and Mouth has threatened the tourist industry like the Coronavirus. Apparently some of the mass cheap clothing stores may well run out, and am I imagining it or is there less chicken around? We get too much from China. Remember the days of “Made in Japan”? I tend to treat stuff made in China the same way, which leaves me with very little to buy these days. Now, what I want to know, is can we build a hospital in six days just like the Chinese? If Coronavirus hits, we will need that kind of “expertise” in quick planning, quick building and plenty of workers. Europe with an ageing population is particularly vulnerable. Kerry has an older population than most counties. We need to take every precaution and we need some leadership in this. One thing is sure, if the downturn in tourism comes, there will be a lot of houses freed up for long term rental in Kerry and a lot of the corporations will be putting the houses up for sale.

Town Twinning Association on German trip | By Sean Moriarty A delegation from the Killarney Town Twinning Association has just returned from Germany where they engaged with residents of the Pleinfeld region in Bavaria.
FOLK TOURS: Author Luke Eastwood is behind a new tour that explores sites linked with Kerry folklore
New tour to explore Kerry druids, folklore and mythological figures A new weekly coach tour that will explore mythological locations in Kerry will start in Killarney next Friday. | By Sean Moriarty The tour, based on a book called ‘Kerry Folk Tales’ by Dingle-based author, Luke Eastwood, will visit locations like Scotia’s Grave and Dún an Óir, sites fully connected with Kerry folklore but rarely visited by traditional coach tours. The tour, which departs from Killarney Tourist Office every Friday from March until late autumn will visit places like Ross Castle and the Lakes of Killarney
before heading west. “There is a story of a hidden village, like the Atlantis of Ireland beneath the lakes,” Luke told the Killarney Advertiser. “There is a well at the bottom of the lakes, it’s a love story-tragedy of sorts, about a maiden who was so besotted with a visiting warrior she forgot to put the cover on the well and flooded the whole place and that is where the lakes came from.” The tour ventures west to Scotia’s Grave
near Tralee, the final reputed resting place of a daughter of an Egyptian Pharaoh. The tour also visits Dún an Óir, the site of battle between British Crown forces and an army of Irish, Spanish and Italian Catholics in 1580 and Rathinanne Castle, a stone tower built in the 15th or 16th century but the site also includes a ringfort dating from the seventh century. The trip also includes a meet and greet with author Eastwood and a free copy of the book. Bookings can be made via: www.kerryfolktours.com.
Chairperson Sean Counihan, and Secretary Sheila Dickson, visited the Gunthosuen Technical School. “The delegation discussed the continued Erasmus programme between schools in the catering and office administration areas and we are glad of the opportunity to promote Killarney in this tourist region of Germany,” said Mr Counihan. They also attended a carnival in Ramsburg, another village in the Pleinfeld region. An Erasmus group from the town will arrive in Killarney on March 22 and will stay for two weeks.

Sem footballers in All-Ireland semi-final | By Sean Moriarty Students from St Brendan’s College Killarney are looking forward to an All-Ireland football semi-final after winning the Munster title in Tralee on Wednesday. The school’s under 16.5 team captured the coveted Frewen Cup after defeating CBS The Green Tralee in Austin Stack Park. This week’s success made up for Saturday’s defeat in the senior Corn Uí Mhuirí when the local school lost out to their Tralee rivals. Wednesday’s success was all the sweeter as Tralee fielded several of their senior cup winning side in an effort to inflict a double blow to their Killarney rivals.
There were several star-performances from members of the St Brendan’s team including Liam Randles who scored the opening goal of the match after six minutes. The team was trained by teachers Kevin Cronin and Vince Cooper. “There were celebrations for a while but it is time to knuckle down again and prepare for the All-Ireland semi-final,” Mr Cronin told the Killarney Advertiser. St Brendan’s will learn who their semi-final opponents are later today (Friday). They will face the winner of the Connacht championship. St Gerald's College Castlebar and Claregalway College were due to meet at the Connacht GAA Centre earlier today. The semi-final will be played on March 7 at a venue yet to be announced.

International bands to perform in Killarney’s St Patrick’s Day parade This year’s St Patrick’s Day celebration in Killarney will have an international feel to it. | By Sean Moriarty Highlights for this year’s celebrations include two US bands, The New Hampshire Police Pipes and Drums Band and the Police Pipes and Drums of Bergen County New Jersey. The parade will also feature a group of Majorettes from Casperia in Italy – as revealed by the Killarney Advertiser in January. Last year, Fáilte Ireland announced funding of up to €65,000 to help support and develop Killarney’s St Patrick’s Day events over the next three years as part of their plan to develop the celebration in locations across the country. “Festivals and events play a critical role in delivering brilliant visitor experiences and St Patrick’s Day provides a significant opportunity to attract overseas visitors to Kerry outside the traditional peak
tourism season. I look forward to seeing a great day of celebrations in Killarney,” Brendan Griffin, the Minister of State for Tourism and Sport, said. As the National Tourism Development Authority, Fáilte Ireland has identified festivals as a key component for tourism growth. The tourism development body is aiming to grow overseas visitors coming to Ireland to attend a festival to 300,000 by 2022. Killarney is the leading the way. “We have been working with the festival organisers on a development plan for the festival over the last few months and, with a strong international proposition, we believe that Killarney’s St Patrick’s Day celebrations have the potential to motivate significant numbers of overseas visitors,” Fáilte Ireland’s Head of Festivals, Ciara Sugrue, said.

The Annual Family Bingo afternoon takes place on Sunday, March 8 from 3pm to 5pm in the Mangerton Room, Gleneagle Hotel. The Bingo afternoon, which is open to all, will have fantastic prizes, donated by local businesses, for game winners and the opportunity to win raffle prizes. There will be spot prizes throughout the afternoon. “We are building on our very successful Bingo afternoons in the last two years and are back in the Gleneagle Hotel, and again have the wonderful Ray O’Sullivan, Bingo caller extraordinaire,
who will make the games so much fun,” Mary Carroll, Chairperson of the Parents Council, told the Killarney Advertiser. “Doors will open at 2.30pm and we encourage people to come early as we had a ‘full house’ last year! Entrance is €10 for adults and €5 for children – with max rate for larger families.” These events are about much more than fundraising, but about bringing the school community together and creating shared memories, Mary explained. “They are about getting to know each other beyond the school gate, in a relaxed and fun atmosphere. We look forward to a great afternoon and welcome everyone to attend. All monies raised will go to supporting activities for children in the school – organising Pilates classes, purchasing equipment, organising guest speakers and activities.”
Future of Killarney basketball is bright and encouraging Killarney basketball side Scotts Lakers/St Paul's will compete in the National League Men’s Division One again next season. After finishing runners-up this season, the Killarney side do have the option of challenging for a place in the SuperLeague in a play-off match scheduled for March 21. Basketball Ireland competition rules allow the Division One runners-up the option of playing the second last team in the SuperLeague at a neutral venue with the winners advancing to the
SuperLeague next season. However, it is not compulsory for the Division One team to participate in this fixture and after much deliberation and consideration, Scotts Lakers have decided to remain in Division One next season. There is no doubt that the prospect of SuperLeague promotion and participation is very appealing and it is the ultimate goal of the club in the next few years. However, the general consensus among club members is to concentrate on Division One in the short term future, to increase the strength in depth of the
squad and to develop the club structure. St Paul's Basketball Club have over 400 juvenile members and the return of National League basketball to Killarney in the past three years has been a huge source of inspiration to many young players who aspire to play at a higher level in the future. Several underage players in the club have the potential and ability to progress to National League level and the club wants to develop this player pathway progression allowing them the opportunity to succeed. The recent public meeting about Men’s
National League basketball in Killarney heard a lot of positivity and enthusiasm to continue with National League and the importance to develop young players was also emphasised. Club officers are confident that the future of Killarney basketball is bright and encouraging. Development and progression will continue in Division One next season. SuperLeague promotion opportunities will arise again when the club is in a stronger position to challenge and participate at that level.

Pamper your pooch at Cute Cutz Grooming
One business not only transforms the look of your pooch – but has their best interest at heart - as staff are trained in Doggy First Aid and CPR. Cute Cutz Grooming located at the Killarney Enterprise Centre, behind Dunnes Stores in the town centre, has a philosophy to help the customer to take the best care of their dog.
Melinda Guban has been in the business for the past 12 years. “I’m very lucky that I was able to turn my hobby into a business. We are very passionate about dogs looking their best,” Melinda told the Killarney Advertiser this week. “I knew from an early age that I wanted to work with animals.” Cute Cutz Grooming specialises in Asian fusion style and the teddy bear look, but also offer breed standard trims and even show grooms for competitions like Crufts. Melinda is involved in ongoing education where she learns to update new styles and is doing the Master Craftsman in Grooming at present. “With that I am planning to teach hands on grooming and do workshops on a one-to-one basis or in a small group and offer inhouse certificates.” Melinda recently won first place in the

Besides a full groom, which includes washing, brushing, styling, nails and
ear plucking if needed, Cute Cutz also offers a wash and brush service to help maintain the coat between trims and we cater for all breeds and sizes. Soon we are going to offer the products used in our salon; the shampoos and brushes that proved to be good quality and get best results. We only use and recommend top quality products.”

Top chefs plan head-to-head battle | By Michelle Crean Things will be hotting-up in the kitchen next week as teams of chefs from Kerry and Cork will go headto-head in Killarney. It’s the semi-final of the County Cooking Championships – and it all takes place locally in The Brehon Hotel on March 9, explained the chef behind the idea, Chad Byrne. “This will be the first big culinary event for Kerry in 2020,” Chad told the Killarney Advertiser. “We have some of the best chefs in Cork and Kerry competing to cook the finest food representing their region and paying homage to local artisans, growers and producers. Through the championship, we want to highlight our Irish cultural heritage using local suppliers and highlighting old cooking styles with a modern approach.”

The night will begin with an epic cook-off battle, where the chefs go head-to-head in teams of five in front of one hundred diners as judges make their decision. The theme of this competition will be based around our two judges, Speciality Food Sustainability and Green Hospitali-
ty expert Conor Spacey who is currently starring in this season’s ‘Eco Eye’, along with Food Historian and McKenna’s Guide Person of the Year, Regina Sexton, Chad added. The Kerry team is made up of Dan Moynihan from The Brehon, Bruce Mulcahy,
Mulcahy’s Kenmare, Sean Roche of Doyle’s Dingle, Cyril Durand from The Dromhall Hotel and Craig Lynch from the Ballygarry House Hotel. “There’s no barriers in the room with chefs cooking and serving for a totally immersive night. Only one team will go through to the Munster final which will be against either Limerick or Clare. It’s serious competition and serious chefs competing.” The County Cooking Championship is also a great chance for chefs that may not know each other to come together and form new friendships and ideas, he added. “We all learn from each other; the food, focus and fun helping our future chefs by giving them the right tools and attitude to succeed in our craft.” “It’s a win-win for everyone! It’ll be an absolute cracker of a night for our diners and our chefs."

Papering over cracks or building true resilience Whatever is going great right now, it's going to change and whatever is going terribly right now, that will change too. Change really is inevitable. This doesn't just mean "things will get better" when they're going badly. It also means that holding onto "how things are" or "how things were" when they're going great is a recipe for suffering and disappointment. This goes for external things like relationships, work, hobbies and internal things like bodies, feelings and belief systems. And it's those who think they can keep things just the way they are who get hit the hardest when change visits them. Are you that kind of person? Or, instead, are you prepared for your lifestyle and belief systems to flow with the changes that will visit you? That is why having knowledge and systems beats things like meal plans when it comes to your nutrition and fitness. That is why understanding your journey and your why is so powerful, as you can
Open Week at Kerry College of Further Education adapt and deal with change far easier when you define these things. A nutrition coach isn’t just someone who tells you what, when and how to eat, a nutrition coach helps you through daily struggles with lifestyle that might interfere with your nutrition firstly. Getting rid of the obstacles and becoming resilient and dealing better with change is a far superior way of gaining long lasting results in your health, fitness and lifestyle. Wedding bells ahead for Mary Ellen and Noel Mary Ellen Creedon and Noel Moynihan recently celebrated their engagement surrounded by family and friends in Killarney. Civil service worker Noel Moynihan and teacher Mary Ellen Creedon, from Kilcummin, gathered in K-Town for the occasion. Travel wasn’t a problem for friends and
family as most were local, however a few did make their way down from Cork. “It was a really good atmosphere,” Noel told the Killarney Advertiser. “My partner’s sister brought us a cake and it was soccer themed on one half, and crayons and art themed on the other. It was great to get everyone together and the two large families getting along so well. Overall, a good ol’ night!”

But they did not want her coming home especially for the occasion, given the costs of flights and everything else. “She was telling me to organise a date and she would come home for it,” Elaine told the Killarney Advertiser. “And I was saying I would organise the christening for the next time she was home. Next thing my niece Nicole qualified for the
All-Ireland dancing final and we were able to organise everything around this.” Andrea is James and Laura’s second daughter, older sister Elena is threeyears-old. The couple, originally from Ballyspillane and Dalton’s Avenue, now live in Firies. Godfather was close family friend, Batt Moriarty, who travelled from Kildare for the occasion. They were joined by proud grandparents, Paul and Breda Horgan and Danny and Hanna Jones and not forgetting Nicole’s sister Stephanie who also travelled from Boston.

Family travel thousands of miles for Tara’s 40th Family members travelled a combined total of at least 13,000km for a 40th birthday in Killarney. Tara De Courcey celebrated the big day at the Killarney Avenue Hotel on Saturday night. Family and friends from all over the world came to celebrate as one of the sisters surprised her by travelling 5000km all the way from New Jersey and Tara was delighted to see her. On the other side of the world, her nephew came all the way from China travelling a whopping 8000km - which was
definitely a surprise, considering the circumstances ongoing in the country with Coronavirus. There was a lovely menu and cake on the day and Kingdom DJs was the entertainment on the night. “There was a lot of us there,” Tara told the Killarney Advertiser. “It was great to catch up with everyone and to come together for a happy occasion.” Her sister had a special monologue and some thoughtful poems prepared which Tara and guests really enjoyed. “It all added up and I appreciated it. I really enjoyed it.”

From Scotland and back for 21st birthday
There’s almost one thousand miles of a distance between here and Scotland – but that didn’t stop one local girl from travelling home for a special occasion. You only turn 21 once – so it only seemed right that Killarney girl Jessica O’Connor travel back to home soil to celebrate with her family and friends. Jessica, who is currently in third year studying Nursing in Aberdeen, travelled quite the distance to celebrate such an
occasion. Her brother Darren also travelled from London. Close family and friends all gathered at the Killarney Avenue Hotel on Friday night, where they enjoyed the party together.

Students learn life-saving skills
Toastmasters help people improve their communication skills, be it for work, social settings such as weddings, or just to be able to express themselves better. And in Killarney, the group meets every second and fourth Tuesday from 7.45pm - 10pm in the Dromhall Hotel. “Young people benefit from it as there’s so much stress and anxiety nowadays,” Debby Looney, a member of Killarney Toastmasters, told the Killarney Advertiser. Debby says she joined Toastmasters because she found ordinary conversation difficult. “I always managed to say something that made me look stupid, or incoherent, or uneducated. That’s what I felt
about myself – nobody ever actually said that to me. I had difficulty saying “no” to people, and I did not know how to stand up for myself without sounding defensive or strident.” She explained that there’s different levels of speaking programmes available for people who have just started, to those who are more experienced. “You have your table topics, impromptu speaking, prepared speeches and positive peer evaluations as well. I think it’s brilliant, you have your specific paths depending on what you are looking to do such as leadership, coaching, teaching, etc. The creativity is great,” she added. Check them out online on Facebook: Killarney Toastmasters Club or www.killarney.toastmastersclubs.org
Local students have acquired new skills thanks to a local volunteer group who gave up their time to teach life-saving skills. Killarney's very own cardiac response unit gave up their time and services to every first year student attending Killarney Community College. “The college is lucky enough to boast staff members whom form part of the first responders and were keen to bring the team in to educate the enthusiastic cohort,” Spanish teacher Edwina Duggan said. “The first responders provided demonstrations and one-to-one tuition in CPR and AED usage.”
She outlined the importance of young teenagers knowing what to do if they encounter someone in cardiac difficulties. “Life skills like knowing CPR or using an AED device could literally save someone's life someday. This training is part of a larger initiative with the aim to train up the three secondary schools in Killarney area. There will be a CPR competition between the schools which will be held in Killarney Community College later this year to encourage students to showcase their newly acquired skills.”

Further education and training opportunities for students and adults Much media attention focuses on CAO applications and the points required for various courses in Higher Education Institutions. It is essential that students and adults consider the multiple options available to them through the further education and training sector as entry to these courses is not based on Leaving Certificate points. The varied opportunities can be explored under three categories – Post Leaving Cert Courses (PLCs), Traineeships and Apprenticeships. Post Leaving Cert Courses prepare school-leavers, or adults returning to education, for direct employment and also can be used as a progression route for entry to higher education. Once students have completed a one year (Level 5) or two year (Level 6) PLC they can continue directly into the workplace and also have the option of applying for a huge variety of CAO courses using the points achieved in their QQI qualification. There are hundreds of PLCs offered by Colleges of Further Education all over the country. Further details are available on www.fetchcourses.ie, and an extensive range of courses for progression are offered by Kerry College of Further Education (KCFE), see www.kerrycollege.ie. Killarney Community College also offers a very successful and long-running PLC course locally in Office Administration, see www.killarneycc.ie. Traineeships are programmes of structured training which combines learning in an education and training setting and in a workplace, aiming to improve employment outcomes for participants by giving them the opportunity to develop cutting edge skills and knowledge onthe-job, making them more skilled, more employable and enhancing their career options. Trainees can be school leavers, mature learners, people in employment and out of employment. Currently, there are over 70 traineeship programmes available around the country with new traineeships being developed on an ongoing basis across a range of industries and sectors in response to identified skill needs. For further details see www.train-

eeship.ie and for details of programmes currently open for registration see www. fetchcourses.ie. Apprenticeships are programmes which alternate learning in the workplace with learning in an education or training centre by blending a combination of on-the-job employer-based training and off-the-job training which prepares participants for a specific occupation and leads to a recognised qualification. See www.apprencticeship.ie for details. The craft apprenticeships such as Engineering, Electrical, Motor and Construction lead to the QQI Level 6 Advanced Certificate Craft. Since 2016, a wide range of new apprenticeships have been developed in areas as varied as Computers and ICT, MedTech, Insurance, Finance, Accountancy, Logistics and Hospitality. For details of employers that are currently seeking to take on apprentices see www.apprenticeshipjobs.ie. Kerry College of Further Education and Training is holding an Open Week from March 2 to 6 giving the opportunity to school leavers, jobseekers or those looking to upskill or change career to visit their campuses at Clash Road, Monavalley and Listowel. All details are available on www.kerrycollege.ie/openweek/. Niamh Dwyer is a Guidance Counsellor in Scoil Phobail Sliabh Luachra and is PRO of the Kerry Branch of IGC. Big Girl Small Town By Michelle Gallen Michelle Gallen’s debut novel is a captivating anti-picaresque, featuring as it does a young woman afraid of going anywhere. A moving and emotive novel about a vulnerable women who lives in fear of the unknown and uncertain, we see the reclusive, misanthropic protagonist Majella O’Neill stuck firmly to her basic routine, not yearning for anything else out of life. She lives with her frail alcoholic mother in the family home in a small town on the Irish border. There’s an absent father, a lack of siblings and a fraught and fragile relationship between Majella and her troubled mother. Majella appears comfortably enveloped by the basic unchallenging life that she lives and rejects any amount of aspiration out of fear. However, being set in 2004 Ireland we soon learn the wider landscape of the Troubles in the North and the impact it had, is to blame. As Majella reveals the inner
layers of her detrimental fear, she illuminates the effect of the Troubles on rural small town Ireland. This book beautifully illustrates how its setting impacts character development in a complementary fashion.

Gardai warn of fake movie money An Garda Síochána and the Office of the Revenue Commissioners say there has been a significant increase in the detection of novelty Euro notes. These notes are often marked as "movie money” or "prop money” and bear a strong resemblance to genuine Euro notes, however they do not contain the security features. Revenue Officers have seized notes in varying denominations representing a value of €430,895 in re-

cent mail centre detections. “We advise businesses and members of the public who deal in cash to be aware that such notes are in circulation and take appropriate precautionary measures,” Gardai said. “Business owners should ensure staff members handling cash are alerted to watch out for these fraudulent notes.” The use of fraudulent currency when trying to purchase goods or services is an offence under the Criminal Justice (Theft and Fraud Offences) Act 2001 and carries
a potential prison sentence of 10 years. “These fraudulent notes should not be accepted as legal tender and any incidents of persons trying to pay with "prop money” should be reported to Gardaí immediately.” People need to be aware that such notes exist and at busy times, especially late at night, they need to exercise a little care and attention, Detective Superintendent Michael Cryan of the Garda National Economic Crime Bureau advised. “These notes are easily identifiable if precautionary checks are made. Also, people who try to tender such notes as real face prosecution, a possible prison sentence and a conviction, which is for life. Such convictions have serious ramifications if one wanted to travel, to work in certain sectors and it can affect their credit rating.”
The International Astronomical Union’s Minor Planet Center (MPC) announced on Wednesday that the earth has a new “temporary captured object”: a tiny new moon apparently captured into earth’s orbit three years ago. This object has been designated 2020 CD3. In a Minor Planet Electronic Circular (MPEC) for February 25, 2020, astronomers wrote that multiple observations confirmed: ‘This object is temporarily bound to the earth. No evidence of perturbations due to solar radiation pressure is seen, and no link to a known artificial object has been found. Further observations and dynamical studies are strongly encouraged. The object is very small and faint. Sunlight reflected from it helps provide an estimate of its diameter. The estimate is about 1.9-3.5 meters at this time, but that could easily change. It’s very small and it’s incredible astronomers can identify something so small orbiting earth’.
Losing weight with Trump The former doctor of President Trump reportedly hid cauliflower in his mashed potatoes to improve the president's diet. “The exercise stuff never took off as much as I wanted it to,” Dr Ronny Jackson told the New York Times. “But we were working on his diet.” In terms familiar to harassed parents of toddlers worldwide, Jackson said that work included “making the ice cream less accessible” and “putting cauliflower into the mashed potatoes.” At a press conference in early 2018,
Jackson announced that he intended to help the president lose 10-15 pounds and transport an exercise bike or elliptical machine to the White House, the Times reported. “You know, I told the president that if he had a healthier diet over the last 20 years, he might live to be 200-years-old,” the doctor told reporters. “He has incredibly good genes, and it’s just the way God made him,” Jackson also added. One of his regrets was moving on from his post as White House physician before he could help institute
the diet and exercise regime he had planned for the president. The former doctor of the White House is now running as the Republican candidate in the 13th congressional district of Texas, one of the most conservative in the US, where the Republican nomination guarantees a place in Congress. Mr Trump called Dr Jackson “one of the finest people that I have met” while elevating him to the role of assistant to the president. And in the 13th District, those words may be more important than any accusation.

K-Fest returns this June Bank Holiday weekend K-FEST returns for 2020, hosting over 10,000 visitors to Killorglin during the June Bank Holiday weekend. This gem of a festival, from Friday, May 29 to Monday, June 1, has proven time and time again to have its finger on the pulse when it comes to emerging art in Ireland.
China bans human consumption and trade of wild animals China's top legislature said it would immediately ban wild animal trade and consumption, saying it would allow the country to win the battle against the coronavirus outbreak. The fast-track decision, taken by the National People's Congress, stipulates illegal consumption and trade in wildlife will be "severely punished" as it will be for consumption purposes hunting, trading or transporting wild animals. Scientists suspect that the new coronavirus passed from animals to humans, but have not proved so. The disease has now killed nearly 2,700 people in China and spread to countries all over the world.
Some of the earliest infections were found in people in Hubei's provincial capital Wuhan who had access to a wildlife market, where bats, snakes, civets and other animals were sold. “There has been a growing concern among people over the consumption of wild animals and the hidden dangers it brings to public health security since the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak,” said Zhang Tiewei, a spokesman for the top legislature’s Legislative Affairs Commission. Zhang said it was both urgent and necessary for the decision to be made at the “critical moment for the epidemic prevention and control”.
Custom wheelchair for Freckles the sheep A custom wheelchair has been designed for a Dublin sheep born with two bent front legs. One-year-old Freckles has been seen in North Dublin with a brand-new set of wheels roaming the farm. The sheep lives on St Anne’s City Farm, located in St Anne’s Park near Raheny on Dublin’s northside. She was born with bent front legs which meant mobility was a problem for her. A fast-fulfilled fundraiser raised €750 for volunteers to purchase an appropriate wheelchair from a Welsh company.
The sheep has yet to control the wheelchair properly but that’s only a matter of time.

Over the four days, K-FEST will host more than 60 events in addition to a gallery trail and an array of multi-disciplinary exhibitions. You’ll find everything
from interactive live art installations to theatrical shows and spoken word performances. A crucial element of K-FEST is the festival's deep commitment to breaking down barriers and making art accessible to all. “Our events are for every kind of art and music lover, especially those looking for something a little different,” K-FEST Chair Penny Dahl said. Chose treatments designed to lift, plump and smooth the skin There’s a surge happening as people are opting for non-surgical treatments - with invasive surgery getting kicked to the kerb. Surgery is very high maintenance, as well as risky and painful to go under the knife. Your skin is continually ageing so it’s still important to hydrate and have monthly facials. Just because you go under the knife doesn’t mean your monthly maintenance stops. As we get older the skin naturally gets drier, especially if you have had cosmetic surgery. Pulling and tightening can change the skin’s mechanism in many different ways and also change how you look dramatically, which is not always for the best. You don’t want to cause creepy skin down the line by doing invasive treatments too soon. Now it seems we are ditching surgery in favour of treatments designed to lift,

plump and smooth your skin. The general feeling within the industry is that 2020 will see a further rise in non-surgical ‘teakments’ when it comes to anti-ageing and non-surgical medi facials. CACI Non-Surgical Synergy facial launched last November and is the leader in its field. We are delighted to have it in our studio. It originally started in hospitals rectifying patients with Bell’s palsy and stroke victims, it was quickly realised that the side of the face that was being worked on was starting to look a lot younger. It’s often the case like laser machines they started in hospitals and moved into the cosmetic industry. If you’re thinking of trying a facial this year and want one with results, CACI Synergy is the way to go. For more information or to book a facial call Jill 064 6632966.

Honorary role as Davide named Italian Count | By Colm Looney This past week, local townsman Davide Mosca – an established expert in the Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce and the well-known architect who was recently recognised for his creation and design of the newly founded ANAM Arts and Cultural Centre in Killarney – donned the garbs of medieval times gone by and bore the mantle of the 72nd Count Pierre at his native homestead. Davide, alongside his family, ventured back to his place of origin, the Italian Alpine village of Verrès, where he accepted the honorary role and was coronated as ‘Count Pierre of Verrès’ making him the third member of his family to do so, closely taking after his late father, Bruno, and brother, Stefano. Also on the trip to witness the experience was local Chamber of Tourism and Commerce President Paul Sherry. As part of the celebrations Davide participated in the events of the town’s historic Carnevale, an almost Puck Fair meets Game of Thrones styled Mardi Gras festival throughout the town, surrounded by family and friends from the Emerald Isle and the Valle d’Aosta. The organised events included a grand and vibrant coronation, a lavish torch-
!
light procession as the ‘Count’ was paraded through the town, and also an enormous mouth-watering banquet organised by the town’s council. These festivities are all meant to reflect legends of old which surround the holiday. The main myth goes that in the 1400s the Count of Challant, Pierre, joined locals in a large ceilí-like dance in the town centre. Ever since the end of the second world war there has been a yearly fourday long celebration which honours one native man and woman from the town who are titled the Count and Countess. “The four days were fantastic!” Davide told the Killarney Advertiser. “They were very busy days. Early in the morning I visited schools, creches and nursing homes while very late nights were spent in the castle. The highlight of the carnival was the interaction I had with the locals, and the interaction they had with the Irish people who were with me in Italy,” he said. He also added that they are working now to begin a strong relationship between the two towns. Originally the Verrès Carnival Band was due to arrive in Killarney for this year’s St Patrick’s Day festivities but due to the cost of transporting musical equipment it has been postponed until next year. “We’ll try to make an exchange for students involving language learning, soccer and skiing.”

WELCOME Welcome to the February edition of Home and Living. While January seemed to last for three months, February has just flown by. But seriously, this rain, is it ever going to stop! Hopefully a fine summer awaits. This month we are looking at the smallest rooms in our homes - the bathrooms. The main bathrooms in our home have gone through a bit of a transformation becoming a room in our home rather than a functional space, and we can see the trends reflect this.

So, if you are thinking of doing a bit of decorating we have looked at the top trends for 2020 to give you a head start. For those of us not brave enough to tackle the garden in this wet weather, we have looked at some indoor planting to bring some spring inside!
Noelle Casey
and the Killarney Advertiser Team
BRING SPRING INSIDE Growing bulbs indoors or sometimes called “forcing bulbs” lets you enjoy the colour and fragrance of spring inside, where it’s not so chilly! Paper white narcissus, hyacinths, crocus and muscari, work really well for this and look amazing in a glass bowl. For the price of a couple of coffees you can watch flowers bloom with the added bonus of a wonderful scent, especially if you pick hyacinth. For these arrangements all I bought was some hyacinth and narcissus in pots for €1.50 in MD O’Sheas, the glass bowls I had already for candles and are from TK Maxx and IKEA. Some moss from the garden and off cuts of contorted hazel from last year - and spring has sprung at least indoors!

Are you the type of person who prefers a relaxing bubble bath over a quick shower? Do you see the bathroom as a place to unwind after a busy day? If so, this trend might be one for you. 혲 CALM Calmer spaces focus on the mind and create a look which will help you relax, refresh and recharge those batteries. Combinations of light woods against soft tones in shades of blues, greens and blush pinks will create the subtle backdrop for this look. All colours are carefully selected as they create a tranquil atmosphere.
혲 MIXING METALS Love the trend towards nickle, but still love your brass? Yes, you can mix metals. All-brass can be too much, and is a trend that may date your bathroom, but if you soften the impact of one finish with the introduction of another, it will more than likely stand the test of time. For example, my next purchase
for my bathroom is a large gold mirror but my bath has a stainless-steel skirt. You don't have to change everything to match, leaving the fixtures and fittings and introducing a new element gives a more eclectic feel.
혲 FREE STANDING BATH Deep soaking bathtubs never go out of style. 2020 sees the trend change to Art deco style, still making a statement but white being the colour of choice.
혲 NATURAL HUES As trends turn towards warmer earth tones, the bathroom is heading in that direction by shunning white tiles in favour of warmer natural hues. We want a less clinical more cosseted homely feeling in our bathrooms.

FRAMED MIRROR
SPA LIKE BATHROOMS
The trend of not using a bathroom mirror but using a mirror you would see in a living room or bedroom is still strong. You can never go wrong with a framed mirror in your bathroom, as well as being one of the few ways of bringing your style into this sometimes-clinical room. It instantly upgrades the space!
The bathroom as a space in the home has changed over the past few decades. No longer is this purely a place for perfunctory daily tasks, the bathroom is a place for relaxation. People are spending more time in the bathroom, using the space for detoxing and relaxing, and in turn we are spending more money on this room with luxury fixtures and fittings and as quality never goes out of style - its money well spent, the design ethos is reflecting this shift.
TILE WAINSCOTING Wainscoting is back - but not in the traditional country wooden style previously seen this year. We are seeing tiles used as wainscoting in bathrooms to add some drama and extra punch.
SMALLER VANITIES 2020 will be moving away from chunky pieces, especially when it comes to bathroom vanities - terrific news for those of us with small bathrooms. To make your slimmer bathroom sink practical, only keep essential goodies in your space.
GOING TO THE DARK SIDE While the trend of clean cut almost Nordic look bathroom of neutrals is big, those that like the darker side are still on trend. Historically, common design sense has dictated that you decorate a small bathroom space in light colours and mirrors in order to make the room seem larger. This old ‘wisdom’ is now being thrown out the window; dark colours blur the edges of the room, the walls are less clearly marked and can give the illusion of more space. So, if you like dark and moody bathrooms go for it, the trend of ‘No Trends’ is very 2020.
LARGER TILES We are seeing a return to large format tiles. They are chic, elegant and attractive – and best of all, they have less grout and are therefore easier to clean! The lack of grout in your bathroom tiles means that you are less likely to have to worry about mould and mildew growing in between. The subway tile has seen its day.
VINTAGE LOOK Vintage look tiles continue to be popular throughout 2020. With the state of the modern world, there's lots of comfort to be taken when surrounding yourself with the styles of yesteryear. Using encaustic styled period patterns in your bathroom is one way of creating your own slice of vintage, If you’re not into rolltop baths and wooden panelling, these tiles can also work well in a modern style bathroom. Have a look at some of top interior designers’ work, mixing styles and trends well, gives you a look that can stand the test of time.
THE CRITTALL COMEBACK CONTINUES The industrial trend has seen its day because we want a cozier warmer feeling in our lives. A few of the elements of this trend have remained. Crittall style shower doors is one that’s not going anywhere in 2020.
STATEMENT SHOWERS Make your shower stand out. We are seeing a huge trend in using a completely different tile or finish in your shower making it a feature in itself.
PLANTS We are seeing more natural elements in our interiors; sense the mad craze of the fiddle leaf fig every interior designers go to plant for the last few years, house plants have been popping up everywhere, this year they have invaded the bathroom.

THE POWDER ROOM So it’s gone from being known as the downstairs loo to the guest bathroom or in the States the “powder room” - whatever you call it, this tiny room is becoming the place to show off your personality when it comes to decorating. In a time where neutrals are king for interiors, lending to all homes looking similar, this room gives you the opportunity to go a bit crazy! It’s a space where you don’t have to worry about getting tired of a pattern and even if you do it’s not going to cost the earth to change it. Also it’s small enough to use that outrageously expensive wallpaper you love as the space is small and you will probably need only a few rolls. So go for it - show your guests the real you - scary or not!

Comparing polytunnels and glasshouses At this time of year many people are considering the addition of a glasshouse or polytunnel to their garden, either because they are impatient for spring, or because a previous structure has succumbed to the weather. Polytunnels are, as their name suggests, tunnel shaped structures made from galvanised metal hoops covered with a strong polythene. Glasshouses can use timber, aluminum, or PVC frames around a horticultural grade glass. The strength and durability of each of the two structural components is directly linked to the price. The advantage of tunnels compared to glasshouses is they are relatively inexpensive, especially if you are looking for a large growing area, which you will need if growing veg. Tunnels can be more prone to wind damage than glasshouses, so try to keep the tunnel out of prevailing winds. A tear in the polythene can be repaired with special tape, however, this is not the most permanent job! Having said that, it is usually only the covering which will sustain damage, as opposed to the structure itself, so the
repair costs can be lower than those for a glasshouse. They are easy to put up, and do not require foundations. As any gardener knows, light is one of the most important requirements when growing any plants. The main advantage of the glasshouse is that the light quality will be better, and glass will not become opaque over time. However, if the structure itself is bulky, it will take from the amount of light entering. Nowadays, a polycarbonate material is used rather than glass, which is stronger and shatter-proof. It also provides better insulation, reducing temperature fluctuations. Polycarbonate diffuses light, which means that all areas of the greenhouse will have equal amounts of light, and also prevents scorching. If at all possible, place your structure in a north/south position as this will prevent too much shade being created by taller plants. The larger the structure, the better the ventilation, preventing fungal diseases. Either structure will ensure a much longer growing season, and also a much more comfortable gardening experience year-round.

YOUR WEEKEND STARTS HERE Free adults and children’s workshops This Saturday from 12-4pm sees the first of three adults and children’s creative workshops organised as part of the St Patricks Day festival. The workshops will give people the opportunity to work with willow and paper in making bees and butterflies which will then be used to decorate Main Street on St Patrick’s Day. The theme of this year’s parade is ‘Earth’. The workshops are free and it is a great way for children to explore their creative side, to participate in the St Patricks Day festival and to give them an opportunity to showcase their creativity on the streets of the town.
The workshops, which also take place on March 7 and 14, will be facilitated by Sophie Lodge and will take place in ANAM Arts and Cultural Centre on East Avenue Road. The workshops are organised by the St Patricks Day Committee who are supported by Fáilte Ireland, Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce and Kerry County Council. Children have to be accompanied by an adult. Drop in and stay for as short or long as you want.

14TH ANNIVERSARY
BARRY
ADAMS
In loving memory of Michael Barry late of Coolies, Muckross, Killarney, who passed away on 1st March 2005. You rest in the arms of angels, In a place of peace and love, Watching over me always, From Heaven up above. You guide me through my worries, And help me through each day, Always by my side, You never went away. Always loved and sadly missed by your wife Catherine. GO TIME FOR KERRY
Kingdom need a morale-boosting performance away to Mayo, writes Adam Moynihan Decent against Dublin. Lucky against Galway. Indifferent against Tyrone. Poor against Meath. NATIONAL LEAGUE: DIV 1
_________________________________________________________________________
Mayo v Kerry Saturday at 7.15pm MacHale Park, Castlebar It has been far from inspiring from Kerry thus far in 2020 but their league campaign is still salvageable. That process can begin tomorrow night with a road win in Mayo. Lose, however, and it could basically end there too. Kerry are currently level with Monaghan in third and, according to the bookmakers, they are second favourites to win Division 1 out, but a defeat this weekend could well leave them looking over their shoulder. They should be fine – their current tally of five points would have been
enough to survive in each of the past three seasons. But Cork got relegated with six in 2016 and Tyrone with five the year before that. With Monaghan and Donegal still to come, they’re not safe just yet.
MEDIOCRE
Look, there’s no major cause for alarm. A win is a win after all and August is a long way away yet. But if we’re being honest, Kerry were fairly mediocre on Sunday against a fairly mediocre Meath outfit, who now seem destined for an immediate return to Division 2. Perhaps the briefer than usual preseason is a factor. Perhaps Peter Keane and his young team are experiencing a very mild – and hopefully fugacious - case of second season syndrome. Perhaps the league simply isn’t as high a priority for them this year as it was in 2019.
Whatever the reason(s), many of the team’s key players are still in second or third gear.
DEFENSIVE ISSUES
The old defensive issues reared their unattractive head again on Sunday as Kerry coughed up a number of clear-cut goal chances. Donal Keogan was allowed to break forward from wing back to score a crucial first-half goal and he would have had another in the second half but for a smart save by Brian Kelly. Bryan McMahon then goaled after Paul Geaney failed to deal with a high ball and, with Meath now back in the game, Kelly was on hand once again to deny Thomas O’Reilly with his knees. The hosts were fortunate that O’Reilly fired the rebound over from close range. When Kerry are under pressure defensively, it often seems to stem from the middle third and they did struggle at midfield against Meath. Any team is going to find the going difficult if they’re
not winning primary possession. The defenders obviously have to accept some of the responsibility but if the opposition are constantly winning the ball back and running at you, gaps are bound to appear eventually.
MAYO Last year’s beaten league and championship finalists will be searching for improvements against Mayo, who desperately need a win themselves. Defeat for James Horan’s men would leave them in a rough spot ahead of an away game against Galway so you can be sure that they’ll be targeting two points in this home match against their old rivals. They were well beaten by Monaghan last weekend and Kerry will be fancied to get the better of them too, but at this stage one feels that Kerry need a morale-boosting performance as much as they need the points.

Walsh lifts Kingdom to unimpressive win NATIONAL LEAGUE: DIVISION 1 ___________________________________________________________________________________
Kerry
1-19 | Meath 2-13
FITZGERALD STADIUM Kerry were expected to burst into life on Sunday but a stuttering victory over bottom-of-the-table Meath has done little to quell the nagging feeling that Peter Keane’s side are not moving all too well at the moment. After an early barrage which saw the hosts explode into a 1-5 to no score lead, Division 1 strugglers Meath appeared to be in big trouble. The Royals steadied the ship, however, and a goal by marauding wing back Donal Keogan reignited the tie as a contest. Despite losing their goalscorer Keogan and influential forward Cillian O’Sullivan to the sin bin, Andy McEntee’s team gave as good as they got either side of
the break and they trailed by just two with 49 minutes on the clock. Kerry, to their credit, responded well to Meath’s surge and registered six straight points to all but seal the tie, but the unconvincing manner of the victory leaves plenty of unanswered questions ahead of a tricky-looking run-in. The Kingdom, who now lie in joint second on five points, will face Mayo, Monaghan and Donegal in their remaining fixtures.
SHAW
The game appeared to be in danger of descending into farce in the opening minutes as points by Paul Geaney, debutant David Shaw and Seán O’Shea (two frees) fired Kerry into an early four-point lead. Captain David Clifford found the back of the net after latching onto a de-
lightful flick by Shaw and when in-form forward Micheál Burns made it eight-nil moments later, Meath were under real pressure. The visitors rallied admirably, however, and rattled off 1-2 without reply, Keogan bursting through unguarded for an all-too-familiar goal from Kerry’s perspective. Kerry led by five at the break but Meath closed the gap once again, before an impressive cameo by substitute Tommy Walsh (which included lifting his marker, Conor McGill, over his head in a bizarre incident that drew loud cheers, and laughter, from the home crowd) helped The Kingdom over the line. In the end, late black cards for Burns and Tony Brosnan counted for little. Assured performances from Gavin White and Shane Enright were among the few positives to be taken from the game as Kerry now look ahead to Mayo away.

GAA knowledge wins Katie a Kerry jersey Local football fan Katie McCarthy has won a brand new Kerry away jersey courtesy of the Killarney Advertiser and the Kerry GAA Store. Katie was one of a number of entrants who successfully completed last week’s Big Sports Crossword and her answer sheet was randomly selected at a draw on Monday evening. The crossword clues were based predominantly on Kerry GAA with a number of questions directly related to Kerry jerseys past and present. Speaking at the presentation, Killarney Advertiser Sports Editor Adam Moynihan congratulated Katie on her win and also expressed his gratitude to competition sponsors, the Kerry GAA Store. “Well done to Katie on completing the crossword first and foremost,” Adam said. “There were some tricky questions in there but she clearly knows her football and is a worthy recipient of the jersey. “We have to thank the Kerry GAA Store and in particular store manager Luke Quinn for offering such a great prize.
Adam Moynihan
Killarney Advertiser
There was a huge response to this competition, which I think reflects how popular the new away jersey is with Kerry supporters. They’re always a pleasure to deal with and we look forward to working with them again in the future. “There was a huge response to this competition, which I think reflects how popular the new away jersey is with Kerry supporters. It was great to see the team getting their first win in their new shirts on Sunday and here’s hoping that it’s the first of many.” Accepting her prize, Katie, who is a student at St Brigid’s Secondary School, said she was “delighted” to pick up the

new Kerry jersey and she thanked the Killarney Advertiser and Kerry GAA Store for running the competition. Some questions were trickier than others with Adam revealing that a number of readers contacted him directly for additional hints. The clue for 21 down
(four letters), which simply read “fruity trim,” seemingly stumped some people initially but scores of entrants got to the bottom of that particular conundrum. It was, of course, in reference to the prize itself, Kerry’s new away jersey, which is blue with ‘lime’ trim.

GREEN MACHINE Quilter and Hayes lead Tralee CBS to dramatic victory CORN UÍ MHUIRÍ FINAL ___________________________________________________________________________________
St Brendan’s
1-15 | Tralee CBS 4-15
FITZGERALD STADIUM
| By Eamonn Fitzgerald St Brendan’s hopes of winning the coveted Corn Uí Mhuirí were dashed at the Fitzgerald Stadium on Saturday last when a blistering final 10 minutes fired Tralee CBS to a rather flattering 4-15 to 1-15 victory. In a thrilling game attended by a large crowd of spectators, the Green Tralee led by nine points at the half, but St Brendan’s eventually came good and shot eight great points to leave just them just one point adrift. They had the Tralee school on the rack but the winners got a new lease of life and piled on the winning scores. Their star player was corner forward Conor
The Sem had the Green on the rack but Tralee got a new lease of life late on and piled on the winning scores.
Hayes who scored 3-2, all from play, and those goals in particular were killer blows for The Sem. Son of well-known Kerins O’Rahilly’s referee Paul Hayes, Conor’s scores were crucial in deciding the destination of the trophy. Another vital factor was the introduction of Seán Kennedy in the 46th minute. Better known as a soccer player who has played for Ireland underage, he made an immense contribution in the Tralee revival. Darragh Reen dropping back to assist his defence was also significant. Remember Tralee had not scored from half time up to the 50th minute. Team captain Seán Quilter did not dominate as he might have been expected to. Although his marker Mark Cooper was conceding many inches to the Stacks man, he did a good job confining him to
five points, two of these from frees.
GREAT PITCH
The condition of the pitch was remarkable considering the awful rainfall of the previous day, but a very strong wind blew straight down the field to the dressing room end and Tralee CBS took full advantage of the elements in that first half, when they shot 2-10 to 1-4 for St Brendan’s. The Tralee goal just before half time was a real body blow. Mike Lenihan and Eoghan O’Sullivan battled hard for St Brendan’s at midfield but found the going tough against Joe Lenihan and Conor Horgan. The attacks came often and fast as the brave Sem defence was put under intense pressure. What was worrying in that first half was that the winners shot very few wides, while St Brendan’s were not as accurate. Emmett O’Shea did keep them ticking over, ending as their top scorer with 1-5. He scored one point from play and the goal was a first half penalty. Nine points down at the interval St
Brendan’s faced a mammoth task but they set about reducing the deficit in commendable fashion. They used the wind well and picked off their points while holding Tralee scoreless. Ryan O’Grady was prominent in the revival, shooting six points (four from play). There was just a point in it by the 49th minute and it could have been level. St Brendan’s had a let-off when Eoin Moynihan saved a penalty from Quilter, but the Tralee took over with Conor Hayes and Seán Kennedy leading the charge with match-winning scores. Saturday’s triumph marked the Green’s 16th Corn Uí Mhuirí title and first since 2007. St Brendan’s still lead the roll of honour with 22. Tralee CBS have never won the Hogan Cup but they now move on to the All-Ireland semi-final against the Connacht champions. Full credit to both teams for providing such a high standard, high-scoring game in difficult conditions, which was much appreciated by the large attendance.

Home draw for Celts in FAI quarter-final | By Adam Moynihan Killarney Celtic have been handed a home game in the draw for the last eight of the FAI Junior Cup, which took place in Abbotstown on Tuesday. The Kerry champions will welcome Limerick District League side Fairview Rangers to Celtic Park on the weekend of March 22 in what promises to be the tie of the round. Fairview are one of the strongest junior soccer clubs in the country and their record of eight titles makes them the most successful team in the history of the FAI Junior Cup. The Celts, meanwhile, are on the hunt for their first national title at this level. Brian Spillane’s side are likely to be slight underdogs against the Limerick kingpins but, with a boisterous Killarney crowd behind them, they will fancy their chances of causing another famous upset.
CONVINCING
Celtic booked their spot in the quarters
at the expense of Crettyard United last weekend as two goals from Wayne Sparling and customary strike by Stephen McCarthy helped them to a convincing 3-0 win. McCarthy missed a first-half opportunity to break the deadlock when his penalty was saved by Crettyard keeper John Dunphy, but he made amends after the break when he fired the visitors into the lead. A 69th-minute red card did little to boost the home team’s chances and Celtic, who were the better team throughout, made sure of the result late on when Sparling made it two. The pacey winger added another in injury time to heap further misery on Crettyard, who finished the game with nine men. Meanwhile, LDL leaders Fairview secured their passage to the last eight with a tense 1-0 win over fellow Limerick side Pike Rovers. In the end, Robbie Kelliher’s first-half goal was just about enough to help Rangers over the line and keep alive their quest to reclaim the trophy they last won in 2010.

London-based Faha co-driver Shane Buckley guided Daniel Cronin to eighth overall on Sunday’s Abbeyleix Manor Hotel Rally. PRES GYM
| By Eamonn Keogh Scotts Lakers secured second place in Division 1 of the National League following an impressive 20-point victory over nearest challengers Fr Mathews in the Pres Gym, Killarney last Saturday night. Despite lining out without Mick McGinn and Mark Greene and losing Toby Christensen to injury in the first half, the Killarney side dominated the exchanges throughout and always looked like winning. The Lakers led by 16 at the half they continued to dominate in the second with dual star Paul Clarke coming off the bench to make an instant impression. Xavier Talton was particularly impressive when he was afforded extensive court time and his scoring threat and clever assist play was appreciated by all. Séamus Brosnan also enjoyed his
best game of the season and was a popular choice for match MVP as the Lakers coasted to a 20-point win. SCOTTS LAKERS: Toby Christensen (17), Séamus Brosnan (15), Xavier Talton (13), Brian O'Neill (13). FR MATHEWS: Jack O'Mahony (16), Jarvis Pugh (12), Darko Bucan (11).
SEASON EXTENSION
Amazingly the fixture schedule reveals a three-week gap for the Lakers from last weekend until Saturday, March 14 when they are due to play their outstanding league match in Killarney against the Limerick Sport Eagles. The Killarney side have the option of playing a promotion/relegation playoff game against the second-from-bottom team from the Super League on March 21. The Division 1 team was originally supposed to have home advantage but Basketball Ireland have now announced a neutral venue for this match. The winners of this game can play in the

Super League next season. The Lakers have also qualified for a League Cup semi-final which will not take place until March 22 and the final is on a week later in Tralee. A three-week gap and a possible fiveweek extension to the season is a costly exercise for any club and it is a very dif-
ficult situation for the Lakers to justify keeping their foreign professional players around for this extended period. The Lakers are committed to fulfilling all remaining fixtures next month but may not be at full strength if some of their foreign players decide to return home in the meantime.
