Sexual acts, binge drinking, drug use in Killarney laneway
Residents say they’ve had enough | By Sean Moriarty Sexual acts, binge drinking, drug use, acts of violence and vandalism – are just some of what young children are witnessing in one Killarney laneway – a local property owner has claimed this week. Children living in Pawn Office Lane just off High Street, who are living there due to the housing crisis - are regularly witnessing anti-social behaviour and playing alongside 660 litre bins - which are stinking in the summer heat. Nearly two decades ago the laneway, which was historically used for bins, was converted into apartment blocks. Local hotel worker and resident Robert Biskup, who is married with two children aged seven and nine, says it’s disgusting to live in such a place as his family have regularly witnessed lewd behaviour on the street, especially Friday and Saturday

nights. “Drunk people have peed up against windows at night in front of my kids,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “It is not a good place. The people throw food and the
birds empty the bins and take rubbish everywhere.“ When he has to leave in the early hours of the morning for work, he said that rubbish is every-where.
“The garbage is full in the street,” he added. “It is very messy. Sometimes it is okay as I take my children to the park to play, but that is not possible every day and they have to play in this.” A visit by Killarney Advertiser staff on Thursday revealed broken glass and over-flowing bins despite an agreement, according to local landlords, that the street is to be cleaned three times a day. New by-laws state that bins are not allowed in the street yet there are no alternative storage locations in the lane – where the children play. “The laneways are attracting anti-social behaviour which at times is filtering into the main streets,” local landlord Ann McEnery said. “Young children are exposed to this and as they reach their teens the situation is going to get a lot worse.” Kerry County Council who are aware of the issues said that they are happy to discuss concerns with residents. “This is a private residential area,” a Council spokesperson said. “The volume of bins is an issue in many parts of the town and something the Council is aware of. The Council continues to liaise on an ongoing basis with residents on matters of mutual concern and is happy to discuss any matters with residents. Anti-social behaviour is a matter for An Garda Síochána.”
“It’s taking the heart out of our parish” Devastated Kilcummin locals plan to flight parish priest loss | By Michelle Crean Kilcummin locals who are “utterly devastated” following news this week that they’re to lose their priest – are planning a public meeting tonight (Friday) in a bid to fight the move. Locals learned the news, which they said has left them “deeply shocked” and “bewildered”, at the weekly 7.30pm Mass on Saturday night, with the message again relayed at the 9am and 11.15am Masses on Sunday morning by Bishop Ray Browne that Fr Eamon Mulvihill, will be moving on - with no priest to replace him. Some of the 100 locals, who met on Tuesday afternoon outside the church, told the Killarney Advertiser that the news is a devastating blow to their large community of approximately 2,000 people, which is 11 miles long and five miles wide, has three national schools, two nursing homes with up to 100 elderly people – saying they are one of the best parishes
in the county for church collections. Some who were visibly angry, told the Killarney Advertiser that the Bishop casually and quietly mentioned the loss of the priest during his sermon. Fr Eamon, locals explained, was brought into the parish two years ago and was only getting to know the parishioners, and also brought a lot of the young people back to the church. They say they are also confused with the news“ which is a bolt out of the blue” as the presbytery recently got new windows and doors. At tonight’s meeting, which is expected to attract hundreds of locals, they will discuss their next move in the community hall at 9pm. “We’ve nothing against anyone, we just want to fight our corner,” Pat O’Sullivan told the Killarney Advertiser. “We heard it last Saturday night. The Bishop came and announced it at Mass and it’s left the whole community in

shock. We know to look at our parish priest that he is just devastated - the parish is numb.” John Foley added that it’s an awful attack on the parish. “People are disappointed and upset they’re in shock.” Locals Dermot and Bernie Lenihan said they are just bewildered with the news. “We’re devastated. We’re from Kilcummin for generations - it’s going to lose its identity.” A spokesperson from the Diocese of Ker-
ry said six of the 53 parishes are already without a resident priest. “The retirement of three priests this summer means that two more parishes will be without a resident priest. These two parishes are Castlemaine in the Killorglin Pastoral Area and Kilcummin in the Killarney Pastoral Area. In each of the two parishes a ‘Planning Meeting’ open to all from the parish is being arranged.” A full list of changes in each diocese will be released on the Diocese of Kerry website today (Friday).

BYPASS: Cllr Kelleher pictured earlier this year at the Lewis Road Junction. Photo: Michelle Crean
Seven year wait for new outer bypass road Newly elected municipal councillors for Killarney have vowed to keep the pressure on central Government in an effort to get the much needed northern relief road into construction phase – which could take up to seven or more years to complete. | By Sean Moriarty Back in 2004, the new bypass was given a 2009 completion date, but following the economic crash the project was put on the long-finger. Town officials promised to keep the pressure on Government ministers in an effort to get this and southern/eastern relief roads into the land acquisition and construction phase. Councillors met on Monday to discuss the current plan to re-align the inner relief road with the Lewis Road and Kilcummin Road junctions. Council officials voted to go ahead with the traffic calming and road re-alignment plans at these locations but overruled a proposed pedestrian tunnel linking the Bridgefield Estate to the northern side of the current bypass road. Newly elected Mayor of Kerry, Niall Kelleher, has been a long-time campaigner for realignment on the road. Following the death of cyclist Annette Mannix in May 2017 he arranged the deputation to Dublin and has long campaigned for works to be undertaken. He has been supported by a host of local councillors and TDs. Over 5,000 people signed the petition that was presented to Transport Infrastructure Ireland. “I am delighted we are in this position and that planning permission had been granted by the elected members,” Cllr Kelleher told the Killarney Advertiser. “This is the first step in changing the traffic movement in Killarney. There is no doubt that the petition put pressure on the Govern-
ment to act.” Mr Kelleher added that there are also plans to build a new road that would take traffic from the bypass to Lower Park Road, but this is only in the pre-planning stages.” Speaking after the meeting, newly elected Killarney Cathaoirleach, Michael Gleeson, confirmed that the Lewis Road project was given the green light but attention will now turn to getting the outer relief road project off the ground. “The works on the inner relief roads are to be welcomed, but the real problem is that 30 percent of the traffic, especially at weekends or during the tourist season are not using this road to access Killarney but are going on elsewhere,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “The real good news is that the outer relief is back on the Government’s priority list and we promise to keep the pressure on our elected Oireachtas colleagues to keep it there.” However, the project could take another seven years before it would be open to traffic, aside from design consultations and other public forums, there would be a need for the purchase of lands to allow construction of the new road. “I won’t be resting on my laurels,” added Cllr Kelleher. “Over 18,000 vehicles use the bypass every day and we will be doing everything we can to put the new relief road further up the agenda.” Two new roads are in the pipeline, the proposals include one that would take traffic from the Lissivigeen roundabout to the Tralee Road and another linking the same junction with Muckross Road.
Gavin White led the Kingdom to their 81st Munster title in Páirc Uí Chaoimh last Saturday night. Clubmate Amanda Brosnan will captain the Kerry ladies squad when they face the yet to be decided Connaught champions (Galway or Mayo) in the first round of the All-Ireland championship qualifiers, which will take place on the weekend of July 12 to 14. “It is a fantastic honour and the highlight of my career,” Amanda Brosnan told the Killarney Advertiser. “I am coming to the end of my career. I am 30 now, and each season I ask myself if I want to go back to the Kerry set-up as it’s a massive commitment. We won the Senior County Championship and in the same way the men’s work, they select the captain from the county winners. Earlier this year I met the new manager, Donal Doherty, who told me I would be captain if I came back this year, and I made up my mind there and then.”
CAPTAINS FANTASTIC: Dr Crokes club members Gavin White and Amanda Brosnan have the unique honour of holding the captaincy of both Men’s and Women’s County football teams at the same time.
“If we all shout together they will hear us” Residents against battery compound plan to join forces | By Sean Moriarty Communities across east and north Kerry are to join forces and protest outside Kerry County Buildings - to strengthen their opposition to battery storage compounds in their areas. On Monday, July 15, residents from the Sliabh Luachra area, who are fighting plans for a 40 unit battery storage compound in their area, will team up with other groups in Kerry who are also fighting the same plans in their areas – as they fear for their health, afraid that the batteries could catch fire, explode or overheat if the compound gets the go ahead. Last week, An Bord Pleanála upheld objections to the project, allowing applicant Redfaze Ltd., to go ahead with the their plans. An Bord Pleanála also recently gave the go-ahead for a battery storage compound to serve a wind-farm at Muingnaminnane in the Stacks area northeast of Tralee. On Wednesday night last, the defiant east Kerry residents held a meeting which was attended by over 150 concerned locals
from the area, opposing plans for the 40 battery storage units, equipment and transformers in Ballynahulla - three kilometres from the village of Ballydesmond. They will also start a fundraising campaign to help pay for High Court proceedings. “Our next step is to raise funds to pay for the High Court proceedings,” spokesperson Anita O’Sullivan, told the Killarney Advertiser. “One of the things that came out of this meeting is that all the community groups in Kerry who are fighting these developments should come together and be heard nationally. We will still have to fight our own corner locally, but if we all shout together then they will hear us,” she said. “The last protest held was intentionally a silent protest to represent our voices being silenced, this time it will not be a silent protest.”

tion Ireland (YSPI). The day will include a BBQ, drinks, live music, kids bouncy castle, free make-up applications, gent’s cuts, raffles, guest speakers and more. “The plan is to give every red cent to the charity as they receive no Government funding,” Fiona told the Killarney Advertiser. “Their big project for 2019 is to raise €150,000 to fund and set up Ireland’s first mobile crisis counselling unit. They want a rapid response mobile vehicle for teens in Ireland at immediate risk of selfharm and suicide.” So far, she added, all local musicians taking part on Sunday have donated their time for free, as has Kevin O’Regan from Boru Barbers, Tim Jones will donate burgers and Peter and Denise McSweeney from Dinis Cottage will take care of the BBQ on the day. Mike O’Donoghue from Lissivigeen Bouncing Castles will provide activities such as an obstacle course and bouncy castle. Lir Café, Aunty Nellies, The Porter House, Killeen House and Salon B have donated prizes. There will also be a marquee on the day in case the weather is bad, she added. Tickets are €20 for adults and kids are free. They are available from Fiona in Zaremba, Boru Barbers and the Killarney Parish Office. However, she added that if people don’t have a ticket, they’ll except donations on the day.

Strong turnout for Tidy Towns
Killarney Tidy Towns group reported the largest turnout so far this year following a Killarney Advertiser feature in last week’s edition. | By Michelle Crean
DREAM COME THROUGH: Maeve McCarthy from Cromane Lower in Killorglin has been crowned as Queen of Puck Fair for 2019. Photo: Michelle Crean
The local dedicated group, who are out and about every Monday evening helping Killarney look its best, reported 33 volunteer helpers on Monday evening. “They were busy on Dalys roundabout,” Johnny McGuire said. “We’d a busy night. The island was cleaned and painted, the grass verge was edged and trimmed from the bottom of Pike Hill to Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre. Everything was given
a good spring clean for the judges who are out and about at the moment adjudicating for the Tidy Towns competition, which will go on through July and August.” The volunteer's next outing takes place this Monday, July 1, at Cleany roundabout at 6.30pm, meeting at Lidl car park. “We’re calling on all business owners and residents to come out and lend a hand. All help is greatly appreciated,” he said.
Maeve’s dreams come though Youngster crowned Queen of Puck Since she was a little girl she imagined being Puck - and this week Maeve McCarthy from Cromane Lower in Killorglin saw her dreams come through - as she was crowned Queen for 2019. The 12-year-old impressed judges with her application letter and she was selected as Queen for the August 10 to 12 fair - the oldest festival in Ireland. An independent judging panel trawled through all the entry letters from Sixth Class pupils across the region, before interviewing each hopeful and hearing them read aloud the famous Puck Fair welcome speech, which is recited during the Coronation Ceremony on the festival’s opening day. Adding to the excitement her friend Sian Corkery was selected as her Lady in Waiting, the first time that two Cromane girls
were selected to perform two leading roles at the same time. “I could believe it when I was selected, I was very surprised,” Meave, who is a pupil at Scoil Réalt na Mara in Cromane, told the Killarney Advertiser. “It something I always wanted to do. Every girl from the area wants to be Queen of Puck, and I can’t believe they selected me. Puck is a big part of our lives, we go every year. My cousins can’t wait to come from Cork to see me.” The festival’s ancient traditions date back to 1613, but over four centuries later the popularity of this unique event shows no sign of waning, with visitors from all over the globe flocking to Killorglin every August to witness the royal festivities with their own eyes.
Planning granted for new Aldi Killarney is to get a new Aldi store on the corner of Deepark Road and Park Road after An Bord Pleanála overruled objections to the project. The new development will replace the German discount supermarket group’s existing store at Ardshanavooly. The new single-storey supermarket,
which will include an off-licence as well as two smaller retail outlets, will also provide parking spaces for 113 vehicles. Kerry County Council granted planning permission for the new site but a local business man appealed to An Bord Pleanála which in turn up-held the Council’s decision and granted permission for the new development.
CLEANING UP: Killarney Tidy Towns volunteers out cleaning and edging on Monday evening.
Prayer area for Killarney’s Orthodox Community Followers of the Orthodox tradition of the Christian Faith in Killarney now have a dedicated prayer area after the Select Vestry of St Mary’s Church of Ireland opened a new area in the church for them. The church, situated in Agahdoe, is commonly known as the Church of the Sloes. Every Friday at 6pm, the Rector of Killarney, Archdeacon, the Venerable Simon J Lumby, recites the Orthodox Jesus Prayer Liturgy and invites any of the Orthodox faith and others to join him in this ancient form of prayer. “There are thought to be a significant number of people living and working in Killarney who have grown up in the Orthodox tradition of the Christian Faith,”
said Archdeacon Lumby. “They have usually emigrated to Ireland from Eastern Europe and some countries bordering on the Mediterranean Sea, and have come to live and work in Killarney. There are no Orthodox Churches closer to Killarney than Cork or perhaps Tralee. So it seems fitting that the Orthodox community is made welcome in our churches by the provision of a dedicated space for their own distinctive prayers and liturgies.” A new area in the side chapel has been dedicated for the use of our Orthodox brothers and sisters in Killarney. It is designated by an “Iconostasion” and Orthodox Christians are invited to come along at any time to say their prayers in the presence of the Saints.

THE
We need a lot less rows and a lot more action Listowel is to get a bypass - and the great focus in Killarney is an underpass. The media were not invited to the special public sitting of the Killarney Council on Monday to discuss the Lewis Road realignment. This was after a pre-meeting earlier this month where the matter was “massaged” so there could be an agreed strategy for the public meeting. It tends to happen in the interests, no doubt, of reigning in fractious councillors. Except the Council management forgot to invite the press to the public meeting. But there were plenty leaks and to be fair. A Council statement afterwards to the effect that following consideration of the report and a presentation by a senior engineer, “the members unanimously agreed the proposals to enhance the safety at the junction of Lewis Road and the Killarney Bypass subject to the proposed subway link under the bypass being removed from the upgrade project”. At the same time, results of the archaeological work on the €40 million Listowel bypass were publicised on local radio. So Listowel gets the new suit and we get the underpass! In Killarney we are having to make
do with realignment when there is a pressing need for a link road between Muckross and the N22, not to mention the "new” road to Farranfore still only at design - 20 years later. The need for the N71/N22 link has never been clearer than this week with tour buses from the Ring having to go via Kilgarvan and the N22 and the traffic on Muckross is so manageable and such a pleasure to drive each evening. Meanwhile, the councillors of the last Council have spent close to three years talking about the terrible alignment at Lewis Road and probably close to 15 years highlighting the dangers! But at the end of the day it took a sustained public campaign and citizens speaking out followed by a petition of 3,500 names to get action on Lewis Road. Cllr Niall Kelleher, the new Mayor of Kerry, who gathered the signatures to present them to the national roads body, acknowledges it was “people
power,” saying he was “only the medium”. Switch up to Listowel, one of Kerry’s smallest towns with one hotel, where their €40 million plus bypass is underway, and the funding there for the Greenway to Limerick has also been announced. In Tralee, where I have lost count of the millions of public money being invested, the major Northern Relief Road has the green light alongside the Tralee to Fenit Greenway. The simple truth is Tralee has enjoyed one of its most successful Councils in decades, despite deep political differences, and despite losing its town council. In Killarney, too much time and energy has been wasted on bemoaning the demise of the town council, and a kind of lethargy has set in while it licks its wounds, it seems to me. There are countless examples of Killarney being left behind. Castlemaine, a village in the middle of nowhere, with around 700 houses and businesses is to get a €6.6 million waste water treatment plant. Killarney with a multi-million euro tourist industry and 20,000 beds, is having
Stop this exploitation Can anything be done about annoying phone calls - those that ring once, dropping the call in the hope you will call back - the latest from Morocco. Then there are the subcontinent of Indian voices telling me my computer is out of order. I find it hard to accept that in this day and age these calls cannot be traced and proceedings issued against the perpetrators. Invariably the calls come from outside Europe and its fine tradition hard won and hard fought for by its citizens individually and collectively is being seen as simply a place to be exploited by people who have probably never set foot in it. It is time we got our European legislators to stand up for the citizens and stop this exploitation and annoyance by these predators, and put down a marker once and for all that the people are not easy prey and this practice has to stop. its sewers checked - as we enter another year where toxic algae warning signs have gone up along Lough Leane and a major “significant” blockage in 2018 where sewage went straight into the Flesk River.
How many bodies does it take to run a sewer? You remember that joke, circa 1970, about 10 Council workers all looking into the pothole and wondering what to do with it? Well, we are at that pass again, it seems. Except this time it isn’t manual workers, but a multiplicity of agencies. I was wondering about the quality of water in Lough Leane and have had to go to four - note four - separate bodies to get information. Irish Water and the Council are adamant the sewage plant is working well. Then there is the water quality in the lakes, and for that you have to go to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), as well as the Council as both test it. The EPA told me the water quality in the lake was overall good - but qualified this by saying “in
the parts they had tested”. They also directed me to a major sewage spill into the River Flesk a year ago directly from the main sewer serving Woodlawn and Muckross, which I had not known about. The EPA raised a concern about the
whole sewer network in Killarney with Irish Water and issued instructions after discovering there was no screen at the storm water chamber/ sump near the Flesk River. The “series of requirements” by the EPA on Irish Water include to establish if there are any other storm water chambers/sumps in County Kerry similar to that which saw the discharges into the River Flesk, “and ensure that they are part of a proactive inspection and maintenance programme”, according to the inspector’s report. Irish Water have also been told to carry out a cleaning programme and install “high level alarms”. Irish Water says “Killarney WWTP is operating in full compliance with its wastewater discharge licence and other environmental regulations”.
No overflow issues have been reported recently in this area, it said, adding the operation of all sewers is monitored on an ongoing basis, asking the public to report any overflows. I got follow up stuff from Irish Water saying the spill had nothing to do with the possible presence of toxic blue-green algae, which quote, unquote they say is a naturally occurring phenomenon! Hello? Was there no awareness of the four year study on Lough Leane published in 2003, where there were a whole four pages of recommendations on the local authority? Meanwhile, something is happening to the fish populations in the upper lake, the EPA has flagged. But for that I have to go to the Inland Fisheries. Water management in this country can be pretty murky!

Something fishy in school art competition
The great wisdom of those who have experienced life was passed down to younger generations in one Killarney school on Tuesday. | By Michelle Crean
FLYING HIGH: Aidan O’Connor during the skydive in memory of Stephen Lyne.
Locals take to the skies in memory of Stephen Locals took to the skies – a whole 10,000 feet in fact – to remember one local lad who tragically died 10 years ago. | By Michelle Crean The 10 participants, who travelled to Edenderry in Offaly for the ‘Jump for Stephen’ skydive on June 15, included Susan O’Donoghue, Aisling Flemming, Jake O’Donoghue, Dan O’Connor, Susan Murhill, Michael Landley, Aaron Morris, Liadh Tobin, Graham O’Connor and Aidan O’Connor. The group took part in the fundraiser to support Lotte Lyne, who now runs the ‘Roots of Empathy’ program in primary schools in Killarney, after her son Stephen was murdered in knife attack in the town 10 years ago. Through the programme, she’s hoping youngsters will learn to connect with others on a deeper level and not turn to violence as they grow. “The day was fabulous, weather conditions were great for the skydive and all 10 did their skydive from 10,000 feet,”
Lotte told the Killarney Advertiser. “All of them found the experience incredible and would do it again. I am so grateful to these wonderful local heroes for doing the ‘Jump for Stephen’ in memory of Stephen’s 10th anniversary, and also for their tireless efforts in raising much needed funds to keep ‘Roots of Empathy’ programme in our primary schools.” The total amount raised is not yet finalised, but she’s hoping to have a final figure by the end of the week. “I would also like to thank O’Callaghan Coaches for sponsoring the bus. They sent us to Offaly in one of their luxurious new busses which made the trip up and down very comfortable and enjoyable. I am so grateful to local businesses when they go above and beyond to support the Stephen Lyne Foundation,” she said.
Members of Lough Leane Anglers group teamed up the Lissivigeen Community Alert and Lissvigeen National School to give prizes for their annual art competition. This year pupils from Third to Fifth class were asked to focus on fishing and as a special treat Chair of the Lough Leane Anglers, Corry O’Flaherty, called in to speak of his life-long experience fishing in Killarney. Mouths and eyes were opened wide as they heard stories of how 74-year-old Corry started fishing aged just five and is still fishing to this day, and the sights he has seen through the years including coming up close to a deer grazing, seeing all kinds of wildlife including the White Tailed Eagle. Following the talk, winners were present-
ed with their prizes by Tim and Kathleen Corcoran, parents of the late Pat Corcoran, who founded the Lissivigeen Community Alert in 1996. First prize went to Max O’Neill from Fifth class, second prize to Sarah Byrne who is also in Fifth class, and third prize to Hudson Keogh in Third class. “Lissivigeen Community Alert has a good rapour with the school,” Pat Kelleher told the Killarney Advertiser. “It’s an annual art competition we run focusing on nature. Killarney is so beautiful and at the back of the school you have the Flesk River, which has two angling clubs, Lough Leane and Clonkeen.” School Principal, Mike McAuliffe, said there was a high standard of entries from the children. “Everyone put in a great effort, we were very impressed with the standard.”

Epsom Derby winners ply their trade in Killarney The team at Killarney Racecourse is celebrating ahead of the July Festival of Racing following a glorious double that links the track with one of the premier classic events in world racing.
RACING: Newly appointed Manager of Killarney Race Course, Philip O’Brien.
This year’s Epson Derby winner, Anthony Van Dyck – a son of the great Galileo – triumphed in the Stallion Farms EBF Maiden in Killarney last July when he was piloted to an eight-length victory by Donnacha O’Brien. That followed the success of 2017 Derby
champion Wings of Eagles who won in Killarney in 2017, under jockey Padraig Beggy, making it a delightful double not only for top trainer, Aidan O’Brien, but for the Killarney course. Anthony Van Dyck will again headline Aidan O'Brien's six contenders for the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby at the Curragh this Saturday. “Killarney has unearthed some notable performers in the very recent past along with some household names such as the two Derby winners and we expect many more budding superstars will perform at the track this year and in the future,” Racing Manager Philip O’Brien said. “The fact that trainers of the calibre of Aidan O’Brien are happy to bring their best horses here is testament to just how good the course is and how respected it is.” The next meeting at the Ross Road course is scheduled for July 15 to 19.

Pupils conquer weather for 5km family fun run In spite of testing weather conditions last Sunday, Faha National School braved the elements and held their annual 5km family fun run in Killarney National Park. Parents, grandparents and children were relieved for a break in the rain as they took off at 3pm from the Castlerosse Hotel. The Faha Parents Association were thrilled at the positive turnout and were delighted to have achieved their fund-raising goals for the 2018/2019 school year. “Despite the challenging weather conditions, it was fabulous to see the energy and enthusiasm displayed by our school children, parents and friends,” Jerry Fitzgerald, Principal at Faha National School said. “At the end of the day, it’s all about having fun.”

Inspirational Ian visits Knockanes National School | By Sean Moriarty Ian spoke to seven of the young students on their last day of primary school ahead of their journey into post-primary education this coming September. “Ian spoke to us all about his accident and how life has been for him over the
past while,” Lucy O’Sullivan, school principal, said. “His inspirational words and determined positive attitude was a wonderful message for all who listened intently to him on the day. He had a genuine interest in our school and the activities that the pupils are involved in. It was a wonderful end to a lovely day of celebration for the entire school community.”
PROMISE: Republic of Ireland soccer star Shane Duffy honoured his promise to Kilcummin soccer fan Brian O’Sullivan
Dreams come true as soccer jersey arrives
Republic of Ireland soccer star Shane Duffy honoured his promise to Kilcummin soccer fan Brian O’Sullivan – as his jersey from the recent Euro 2020 qualifier against Denmark arrived in the post last week. Brian (11) and his pal Sean Cox attended the match in Copenhagen with their respective fathers, Ulick and Tom. Sean was lucky enough to secure his
hero James McClean’s jersey after the game - but Brian missed out. However, a chance meeting with Duffy after the game resulted in the Derry native making a promise that he would send his jersey to Kilcummin and it arrived - much to the delight of Brian. “It finally arrived,” his mother Maura told the Killarney Advertiser. “He was so excited he could not wait to get to school that day and show his friends.”

Golf tournament to raise funds for Kerry Mountain Rescue Castlerosse Golf Club will host a new weekend-long competition to raise funds for Kerry Mountain Rescue Team on Saturday and Sunday. The Castlerosse Golf Club Charity Open Weekend will mark the first time that the club’s annual fundraiser is a two-day event and also it’s a first that both the ladies and men’s teams collaborated to run an joint fundraiser. Kerry Mountain Rescue Team was the charity nominated by ladies captain Sally
Filby. In the past the club has supported Pieta House and Adapt Kerry Women’s Refuge. “When you play golf at Castlerosse you are surrounded by these beautiful mountains,” Sally said. “They are so intrinsically linked to this area and part of the fabric of where we
are. Many of my friends and members of the club walk in these mountains and we are all aware of the great work Kerry Mountain Rescue do. They don’t get any Government funding, apart from some grants and every business I approached wanted to support this event.” Teams of three are invited to enter at the registration desk at the club on Saturday or Sunday. Non-golfers are welcome to attend too and can spectate at the event by making a donation to Kerry Mountain Rescue.
FLAG DAY: Gneeveguilla NS officially opened their new extension on Friday. The day included raising of an active school flag and a green schools flag
New extension at Gneeveguilla National School | By Sean Moriarty The new extension at Gneeveguilla National School, which boasts two resource rooms and a state-of-theart sensory room, was officially opened on Friday last.
FUNDRAISER: Launching the Castlerosse Golf Club Charity Open Weekend in aid of the Kerry Mountain Rescue Team were Mick Clifford Captain, Sally Filby (Lady Captain), Una Moroney (Vice-Captain), Sean Murphy (Lord Kenmare's Restaurant sponsors), Ella Gzybowska (Operations Manager Castlerosse Hotel ) with Michael Finn, Alan Wallace and Tom Murphy of the Kerry Mountain Rescue Team.
Pupils, staff, parents, grandparents and members of the community celebrated with Chairperson of the Board of Management, Eileen Cronin, by raising the flags and cutting the ribbon on the new extension, which was blessed by Fr Anthony O’Sullivan. “It was a very proud day for the school as they achieved their third Green Flag, first Active School Flag and fifth Discover Primary Science and Maths Award,” Principal Gerardine Shanahan said. “Gneeveguilla National School is going from strength to strength with increased enrolments and a wide range of facilities and activities provided by the school. Any schools interested in adding a sensory room to their schools are invited to visit Gneeveguilla NS and speak with myself.” The sensory room is provided by Health Care 21, a Cork-based specialist company, that employs uncle and nephew, Joe and Liam McCarthy, who are two past pupils of the school.
Funding in place for Cycling Without Age project | By Sean Moriarty Killarney Cycling Club will bring Cycling Without Age to the town thanks to the latest grants for community projects in Kerry under the Community Enhancement Programme. Cycling Without Age is a movement that was started in Copenhagen in 2012. Founder Ole Kassow wanted to help the elderly get back on their bicycles, but
he had to find a solution to their limited mobility. The answer was a trishaw and he started offering free bike rides to local nursing home residents. The club will receive €6,500 under the Community Enhancement Programme, while Rathmore Social Action and Sliabh Luachra Cycling Club will receive €6,500 and €1,500 respectively for the same reasons. “Funding under this programme in Kerry was targeted at age-friendly and healthy community projects and initiatives in keeping with the objectives of
the Local Economic and Community Plan, Kerry’s Age Friendly Strategy and the Healthy Kerry Plan,” said a Kerry County Council statement. Other big winners in the Killarney area include €5,500 for street lighting for the Ballyspillane Estate, and Killarney Looking Good Committee will receive €4,000 for an intergenerational project in association with the Meitheal Group and Killarney Community College. “This is wonderful news for a range of community, voluntary and sport-
ing organisations in the county,” Niall Kelleher, Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, said. A total of 69 projects in Kerry have been approved for funding including accessibility projects, the provision of comfortable meeting spaces for older people, social spaces, community safety initiatives, intergenerational projects, creative and recreational activities within communities. In total, over €33,000 was handed out to projects in the Killarney Municipal District Area.

St Oliver’s pupils came faceto-face with a Lely Robot Children got to experience first-hand the difference between urban and rural life last week after a school trip to a local farm. Sixth class pupils from St Oliver’s who are taught by Joanne Rattigan, took some time out from their books and visited Mark Leslie’s farm in Drombrick, Beaufort, a family run farm with over 70 cows that produce milk, and got handson experience that no books could ever provide. “Growing up in an urban environment, there’s one thing you know children are missing out - a trip to the rural areas and seeing a real live working farm with animals is rare these days,” Joanne told the Killarney Advertiser. “Farms are a great place to visit any time of year because they provide students with an experience to see how farms work, how animals help us, and it is great!”
The visit came about as their classmate Pierce Leslie, had a very strong connection to a working farm, she added. “With the help of Pierce’s dad, Tom, and his uncle Mark, we were able to arrange a class trip to a working dairy farm. There are a few children in my class that are farming fanatics and their enthusiasm for farming and farm machinery had rubbed off on the rest of the children!” The whole class were excited to see the milking machines, the robots that helped out on the farm and the huge tractors that they had heard so much about." Tom Leslie started off the visit by briefing the children on the changes that he had seen down through the years on
dairy farms. The children then had the opportunity to see old milking methods and old milking machines. They then got to experience the current methods of milking cows using the Lely milking robots. “They were amazed!” she said. Mark and Tom Leslie brought the children on a tour around the farm and explained in detail about the robots. “The children got to see how the robots are managed, what information the robots give to the famers and the difference they make to the life of a modern day farmer. Farming is educational, and teaching your children where exactly their food comes from is a lesson itself. Children will see the hard work and effort that goes into planning, growing and harvesting crops as well as raising and caring for livestock.” And understanding the farming process
can help children to be grateful for their food, she added. “Because of children’s inquisitive minds, they are eager to know why things are the way they are and will ask many questions about their immediate environment. Mark and Tom were on hand to answer the multitude of questions that were thrown at them.” Tom ended the tour with a lesson on farm safety. Tom pointed out numerous hazards on a farm and things that farmers need to do to ensure safety for farm workers and the animals. “We were fascinated walking around the farm, meeting the cows, watching them feeding, learning about the daily life of a dairy cow and experiencing the smells and aromas that we were unaccustomed to! We were fascinated by the robots and were delighted to see them in action. We had a lovely time on the farm and thoroughly enjoyed the trip. Thanks very much to Tom Leslie for organising the trip. Thanks to Mark Leslie and his father Michael for inviting us to the farm and educating us. We appreciate the time you spent with us and for making the trip really enjoyable.”
DENIS KLAGISS | Winning Essay: 6th Class pupil, St Oliver’s National School, Killarney
My Visit to the Farm On the 20th of June my classmates and I, from St. Oliver’s N.S went to a working farm in Drombrick, Beaufort. Thanks to Pierce and his family we were able to go because Pierce’s uncle Mark Leslie owns the farm. When we arrived to the farm we were greeted by a friendly dog called Chelsea.
WINNER: Denis Klagiss who wrote the winning essay, pictured with Tom Leslie.
The surroundings smelled like slurry and some of my friends didn’t like it but I was fine. Also we saw a big New Holland tractor with a plough behind it then we saw a John Deere tractor
with mowers on it. We also got to see a pretty big bailer and a JCB loader. THE TRACTORS WERE HUGE!!! Then we all got together in a group, we wanted to know who owned the farm? We were told that Mark has owned the farm for about 15 years now. Then we were split into groups and we first went to the robot called Lely that milks the cows. There is a chip on the cows so when the cows go into the shed, the chip gets scanned and the cow usually gets 20 to 40 nuts depending on the season. Then we saw how the milk gets pumped out. If the same cow goes
in twice it gets kicked out by a zapper that comes down. We saw were the milk gets stored in the parlour and the calves milk gets stored separately. The milk gets collected every 3 days by the truck, also the farmer gets 39cent per litre of milk. Like in a shop you pay over a euro to buy milk and the main man gets so much! At the end we were given sweets, Taytos and 7UP it was great! We sat down and talked, looked at the tractors then Tom Leslie took a photo of all of us between the tractors it was fun! We said our goodbyes and went back to school, I LOVED IT! Thanks very much to Aunty Nellies, Traditional Irish Gift Shop, Killarney, for the wonderful prizes for the class.

Irish dream wedding for American couple
28.06.2019
Six years ago one American woman paid a visit to Killarney to get a sense of her strong family roots – and returned last week for the most important day of her life. Julianne Sheehy has strong family connections to Killarney as her maternal grandfather, William ‘Liam’ Murphy, whom she adored, was born and raised in Kilbrean, Killarney, and baptised in the cathedral in 1920. He was one of nine children and in the 1950s moved to America. Her father is from Moyvane in North Kerry, one of 10 children, with eight siblings still living in Kerry. He moved to America in 1985. And after her visit aged 23, she felt Killarney was a magical location for her wedding day. She brought her boyfriend James O’Neill here for a visit and he also fell in love with the town, leaving them no doubt that Killarney was absolutely the perfect place to start their new life together. On Saturday, they were married by Fr Kieran O’Brien in St Mary’s Cathedral, followed by their reception at the Muckross Park Hotel. Best Man was not one - but two men, Patrick Leonard and Matthew O’Neill. Maids of Honour were Bridget Sheehy and Mary Beth Sheehy. Bridesmaids were Margaret Greenfield, Aileen Coen, Carli Weiler, Anna Wesselhoff, Siobhan Duffy, Megan Courtright Photographer: Míchéal O’Sullivan
and Colleen O’Neill. Groomsmen were Daniel McEldowney, Brian Byrnes, Matthew Elrod, Gavin Hutchinson, Kevin McCormick, Todd Courtright, Michael Ryan, Liam Sheehy, Brendan Sheehy and Michael Sheehy. Flowergirls were Molly Sheehy and Charlotte Courtright, the bride and groom’s little nieces. The bride’s parents, Denis and Maureen (Murphy) Sheehy, the groom’s parents, James and Sue (Schmidt) O’Neill and the bride’s grandmother, Julia (O’Brien) Murphy, all enjoyed a wonderful occasion. On the day the couple celebrated with 140 guests who travelled from Chicago, Kerry, Cork, England and Dublin. The band was the entertaining Deuces Wild, whilst the bride’s second cousin was the amazing DJ, Gavin O’Leary. The following day the party continued as they met up for more celebrations in Killarney Brewing Company. “We were both born and raised in Chicago, Illinois,” Julianne told the Killarney Advertiser. “We have been together for three years. We love Killarney and felt it was the perfect place to begin our new life together.”

Hydrangeas do best in semi-shade It seems early, but the first Hydrangea blooms are appearing in all their glory. These plants originally come from Japan and their name comes from the Greek words for water, “hydor”, and cup, “angeion”, due to the shape of its seed capsules. An apt name, as luckily for us in Kerry the hydrangea loves moisture! These beautiful plants do best in the semi-shade, in a humus rich, damp but not waterlogged-soil. Avoid east facing and dry windy sites. There are so many varieties on the market currently it is difficult to choose the right one for the right space. One of my favourites is Annabelle, a medium sized shrub with white flowers. It can be prone to suckering - so give it plenty of room. Another beauty is Vanilla Fraise, with white pointed flowers which turn a deep pink as they age. Hydrangea quercifolia has large leaves shaped like oak leaves. These three varieties are less hardy than the types we are more familiar with, such as the Mopheads, those with large round blooms, and the lacecaps, with flat flowers. The problem with these is that they are often susceptible to the pH of the soil, with blooms turning pink in an alkaline soil, or blue in acidic soil. There are ‘hydrangea colour-
ants’ for sale, but generally these are just suitable for turning pink to blue. In other words, there is iron in the feed, which acidifies the soil, changing the colour of the bloom. It is important to note that you must feed it the colourant on an ongoing basis, as it will leach out and the natural pH of your soil will rebalance. To turn your hydrangeas pink, add lime, either a horticultural lime or a scattering of builder’s lime. I notice that many suppliers of hydrangeas now write the pH on the label of the plant, indicating the pH of the soil in the container, which will need to be the same in the garden in order to maintain the flower colour. If you are unsure of your soil, it is easy to find out – a soil testing kit is for sale in most garden centres, and the instructions are simple to follow. Hydrangea petiolaris is a climbing variety which is self-clinging, has white flowers, is evergreen and will be happy on a north-facing wall – what a plant! There are dwarf hydrangeas also, Pia and Bobo are two which will thrive in pots. Pia has pink ball shaped flowers and Bobo has white flowers. Another popular dwarf variety is Little Lime, which has pale green, pointed flowers. These are all hardy but do need protection from wind and severe frost. Hot Chocolate has beautiful deep burgundy foliage with pinkish flowers, a beautiful addition to a herbaceous border.

DENIS COURTNEY WINNERS: Winners of the Denis Courtney Memorial Street Entertainment Competition were: Tadgh, Liam, Olwyn, Ewan and Gearóid Evans receiving their trophy from Ann Courtney and Mary O’Shea, from the local credit union, who sponsored the prize.
OPENING NIGHT: Stewart Stevens, John Long, Niall Kelleher and John Canty at the Fleadh opening in Milltown.
Fleadh fever in Milltown Fleadh Cheoil Chiarraí was a wonderful family event this year in Milltown, with Sunday’s family fun day a huge success despite the weather. “The weather actually helped in a way,” PRO Chris Horan said. “All events were moved indoors and brought people together.” The Denis Courtney Memorial Street Entertainment Competition, remembering a local community leader and former Comhaltas County Chairman, was moved to the Muintir na Tíre Hall. “The venue brought all the musicians to-
gether and joining in was as much part of it as competing,” MC Owen O’Shea said. “ This sharing and meeting of young people from all over the county was just what Denis would have loved.” Other Sunday events were ‘Time to Party’ and Cliodhna McCarthy’s Science Fair, which took place in the new Nagle Rice Community Centre. “The new Presentation School and other local facilities are one of the secrets of our success,” said Fleadh Committee Chairman, Vincent Prendergast. “Milltown’s central location, our state-ofthe-art facilities, as well as the army of
volunteers make Milltown a unique location to host events like this.” Kila, the main performers, played a high-tempo gig full of their distinctive interpretation of traditional music, and wowed the large crowd who weren’t put off by the unsettled weather. The audience was rewarded by a beautiful June evening and a truly memorable performance. Set dancers were well taken care of at Ceilidh performed by Uí Bhriain and the Shandrum Ceilí Band, both playing to full dance floors. An annual highlight for many is the “Sing-
ing Club”, hosted this year by Larkin’s Bar and drawing together lovers of traditional song from all over Munster. Treasurer Sheila Hurley was appreciative of the support for the event. “The Fleadh cost over €50,000 and we put €12,000 into free, family entertainment. We are grateful to the many local businesses who supported, as well as Chapter 23 Credit Unions and Kerry County Council. The staff of the local facilities play a huge part in the success also, especially the management of the Presentation Secondary School.” Spin City Funfair provided the thrills all week, and Urs Wenk hosted a percussion workshop for kids, while local bars welcomed traditional musicians to play at this annual gathering of music lovers.

Wake Me When It's Over The Cranberries RELEASED: JUNE 19 The Cranberries have turned to students of Limerick for a video for the single ‘Wake Me When It’s Over’, taken from the band’s final album ‘In The End’. The Cranberries approached Limerick School of Art and Design (LSAD) earlier this year proposing a collaboration between the college and the band, while Tom Clancy, an award-winning recent graduate from Animation at the college, was selected as the Creative
Director. “The college is respected as a highly creative force in the area” says the band’s Noel Hogan. “We were curious to see what they could create for ‘Wake Me When It’s Over’ which is very much a classic Dolores [O’Riordan] song – really catchy with a softer verse and a massive chorus”. Issues around environmental damage and climate change quickly became central themes for the animation.
By Séan Ó Tuathaigh RELEASED: JUNE 25 Outlanders: Stories of the Displaced is a beautiful compilation of 10 real-life stories from refugees and asylum seekers, whom the author met while working in the field of refugee resettlement in the US and Ireland. They are old people and young, recently arrived and well established, originating from Afghanistan, Burma, Laos, Somalia, Iraq, South Africa, Bosnia and Palestine. It is the first work of its kind to explore the subject from a creative perspective, setting it apart from previous journalistic work available on the subject. The stories are presented in a style that immerses the reader in the journey of the refugee, the sights, smells, sounds they experienced, how it felt along the way. These unique individual narratives are bound together by recurring themes: daily life,
the eruption of conflict and the privations endured to escape it, offering a glimpse into the lives of the displaced, not through screen or newsfeed, but through the very eyes of those who survived. Published by Mercier Press, RRP €14.99.

Women’s soccer captain annoys President Trump President Donald Trump is this week at loggerheads with co-captain of the United States Women's World Cup team, of all people. Megan Rapinoe has become one of the more prominent athletes outside of the NFL to speak out against police brutality and injustice across the United States. Rapinoe, who is representing her country at the World Cup in France, angerly stated earlier in the week that there is no way her and her teammates would get an invite to
the White House following the tournament. She used a choice of words unsuitable for print in her outburst. She said that Trump would not risk inviting the squad to the White House in case they would reject the invite, in the same way that when the Golden State Warriors became the NBA champions in 2017, the team said it would not go to the White House. Her opinion angered Trump who took to Twitter, his favoured PR machine, to remind Rapinoe who was

The Burton-on-Trent closure comes after Kerry failed to renew a contract to supply supermarket chain Tesco with ready meals. Glenbeigh man calls out Boris Johnson A London-based Kerry man with strong links to Glenbeigh, has been revealed as one of the Conservative Party’s biggest donors.
FIRST: Ireland’s first Community Air Ambulance will take to the skies before the end of July
Community Air Ambulance to be operational by August Ireland’s first community Air Ambulance will take to the skies before the end of next month. The helicopter will be operated by charity organisation Irish Community Rapid Response and will be based at a private airfield near Millstreet, County Cork. The air ambulance will be unveiled to the public at a special event at Rathcoole Aerodrome, just over 40kms from the centre of Killarney, on July 6. The Community Air Ambulance service is expected to respond up to 500 calls per year. Some of the serious incidents it is expected to respond to includes the airlifting of a seriously ill patient from remote and rural hospitals or accident scenes to appropriate specialist hospital care. The ICRR Air Ambulance would have sufficient fuel to fly from Rathcoole to airlift a patient from as far away as Mizen Head and back to hospitals in the Dublin area. The Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) will be tasked through the
999/112 call system operated by the National Ambulance Service at its National Emergency Operations Centre and is supported by the HSE and Department of Health. The service will include a medical crew who can provide life-saving treatment to those who are seriously ill or injured, along with rapid transport to a critical care facility. “We had initially looked at Cork Airport but felt that north Cork would be a better location as it would give us more land coverage,” John Kearney, Irish Community Rapid Response CEO, said. “The weather also tends to be a lot better in north Cork than at the airport as it is farther away from the sea, a consideration we felt was vitally important in maintaining a 24/7, around-the-clock service. For many different considerations, Rathcoole is the perfect location for the service, which we hope to have operational within the next six weeks. This will be a real asset for the region.”
Taxi tycoon, John Griffin, has given £4m to the Tories over the last six years. He made his fortune with a 4000-strong taxi company called Addison Lee, starting with one car in 1975, which was sold to the Carlyle Group for £300m, in 2013. Since then he has concentrated on other business interests including a fibre optics firm, and was one of the prime investors in Irish TV, a station set up mainly to cover the activities of the Irish in Britain. He was named as the Kerry Association London’s Kerry Person of the Year in 2014. “I started from nothing,” said Mr Griffin at the time of the award. “I was in Ireland from the age of one to nine, I went to

school every-day with no shoes on. We moved to the UK and I failed my 11 Plus. When it came to my GCSEs and A-Levels I went to Ireland on holiday and contracted TB. I spent 18 months of my life recovering from that and did not sit a single exam. We had no money growing up and I started my business with one car, eventually developing it into a company with 4,000 vehicles.” He was back in the UK news this week as he demanded that Tory leader elect and potentially the country’s next Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, explain why the police were called to Johnson’s home last weekend following a row with his partner. “It is likely that he is going to become the PM and most members want to support him. But if I did anything wrong, I would need to explain. Because he hasn’t, it is a real worry,” said Mr Griffin.
A Ford Ranger Crew Cab will be joining Kerry Civil Defence fleet in the coming weeks. The purchase of the vehicles is part of a €500,000 allocation from the Dormant Accounts Fund, part of the Department of Community and Rural Development. The vehicles, priced at over €31,000 each, will improve the four wheel capability of the Civil Defence fleet and further improve its ability to support the Principal Response Agencies. During national adverse weather events
such as Storm Ophelia in October 2017 and Storm Emma in March 2018, the Civil Defence fleet of four-wheel drive vehicles were fully deployed. The vehicles were utilised in carrying out a variety of tasks, assisting local authorities, the HSE and the National Ambulance Service and An Garda Síochána. “These new vehicles will be an additional resource for those who give their time and work so hard in times of emergency such as severe weather events to keep people safe. Their provision is also an important acknowledgement of the work of volunteers and their ongoing commitment to Civil Defence,” Minister of State for Tourism and Sport, Brendan Griffin, said.

Summer-time skin preparation
With a bit of luck we’ll have some sun this week so it’s time to start the summer prep During the colder months we tend to forget about our body as it’s covered up so my advice is to exfoliate the entire body every time you shower. The exfoliating mitts from Pennys are fantastic and once a week you should spend a little longer exfoliating, using a product with grains in it. Don’t forget to turn off the shower while using it otherwise it will wash off down the drain. Before going for your waxing treatment, try to exfoliate to help illuminate ingrown hairs. Usually these appear when mixing waxing and shaving. Try to stick to waxing, it will really reduce your hair growth in the long run and it is also like extra exfoliation for the body two in one treatment! After all this exfo-
liation it’s important to hydrate the skin. Drink loads of water and moisturise the body daily. Take extra care of your legs as they tend to be the driest part of the body. A universal contour body wrap can be a really good way to tone, tighten the skin and detox the body. The appearance of your skin will look so good also. Always leave sun factor 30 in the car as even on the dull days in Ireland you can still get sunburn. It’s the number one cause of skin aging and none of us want that. Use SPF 50 for the face - Sothys SPF 50 is super good and has anti-aging properties in it. Call Jill for more info or book an appointment 064 6632966.

Kerry topped the medal table with five titles followed by Cork (3), Tipperary (3) and Limerick (1). He went on to defeat his club colleague Tadhg O’Sullivan, one of the event organisers, in the semi final and lost narrowly in a pulsating final to Mike O’Connor (Limerick). This was a major boost for Spa Handball Club and their magnificent facilities which features two handball walls. In the Ladies B final Siobhan Printice (Tipperary) beat
Spa Handball Club competitor Aoife Walsh (Currow) 15-9, and 15-8 in a spirited game that highlighted the improving standard and interest in the ladies game in Kerry. WELCOME Welcome to the June edition of Home and Living. It doesn't feel much like summer as the weather has been so crazy, and with most schools finishing up for summer holidays this week, we need some things to do to distract us from the rain which is out to ruin our fun. If you've been thinking about a bedroom revamp for your children's bedrooms, or are expecting a new bundle of joy, we are looking at teen rooms and nurseries this month. The boho vibe, which is trending on Instagram, can definitely be seen sneaking into our budding teenager’s rooms for the last while which is great as this is a very simple style to emulate. Some simple furniture, a Beni Ourain rug, a hanging chair, some plants, and you’re almost there! There may be some good news out there for those of you entertaining children for the summer, or just want to do some gardening or replace the patio – the sun is predicted to make an appearance! A rare 7ft shark was caught and released off the coast of west Cork last weekend - the third shark of the season, which according to the charter company is a sign of good weather to come! We’ll take all the good signs we can get!

Your teenager's bedroom may be amongst the hardest rooms in the house to design.
BEDROOM
IDEAS
It needs to spotlight their personal style and interests while still fitting in with the rest of the house. You want to make sure it grows with them through the teenage years, and you want to avoid any nuclear meltdowns when they demand something like black walls. The best way to avoid this is to let them have their say. It may be hard to release control a little especially if you are interiors obsessed like me but think of it as handing over your flair for design to your children! Set up a Pinterest page and pin some pictures that you like, then get them to do the same. Explain that this is a discussion and they may not get everything they want. We are in the process of this in our house, and I find that explaining how much things will cost and how long they will have to live with their decision works well with things like black walls. Dark colours are such a big thing now so navy or dark grey could be a great compromise. Have a look through our top tips for a teenager’s room together and you may just find that compromise!
YOU AND YOUR KIDS WILL BOTH LOVE
1. SAY YES TO SMART STORAGE This bedroom is the perfect example of how to decorate a space that can grow with a person. It has smart storage solutions with playful yet grown-up décor on display. If you’re decorating for your pre-teen your child may not want to throw away all the trappings of childhood yet, but may not want to display that coveted bear/car/doll collection, so storage is the way to go. This can be used later to store all those clothes when they truly get into the teen years. A hanging rail is also a great option if you have the space as they can display their favourite outfits and it stops the dreaded clothes living on the floor or chair.
2. LAYER, LAYER, LAYER If your teens share one large room and if you have the space, consider two small double beds instead of two twin-sized beds. The upgrade will make sharing a room feel a lot more mature and comfortable. Incorporate boho elements with a patterned rug, bright sheets and pillows, and rattan ottomans. Abstract photography is a chic, modern touch.
3. HAVE FUN WITH DÉCOR When decorating a kid's room, always invest in classic staples and then have a little more fun with the artwork and accessories. These are a lot easier to swap in and out and can introduce just as much personality. A printed upholstered headboard and fun throw pillows bring in a sense of youth. Go find a large poster of their favourite band or sport event and frame them for a more refined feel that still puts them in the spotlight. A great way to work those prints for their wall is a picture shelf giving them the chance to swap pictures later on as they change their trends without leaving you with nail holes everywhere.
4. GIVE THEM PRIVACY If their bedroom is big enough, carve out a little seating area in the corner so they have somewhere private to relax and hang out. If you have the room, add a small sofa or seat for them to read or entertain their friends in their own space.
9
1, 2, 8, 10 2
5. PUT THEIR HOBBIES ON DISPLAY They may have grown out of Lego or model toys, but may not want to part with them yet, so putting a few of the nicer ones in a glass cabinet makes more of a collector’s display and can look really funky without the dusting!
6. GIVE IN If you can persuade them away from black. Here's proof that you can be bold and dark while still maintaining a clean, sophisticated aesthetic.
7. GO ALL OUT If your teen has a favorite colour and knows exactly what they want their room to look like, why not go all out? Make it feel like something they'll still want to sleep in when they're older by opting for good quality bedding and timeless lighting fixtures. Layering different textures also brings in some warmth. We're big fans of the gallery wall of mirrors above the bed for added dimension and light.
8. KEEP IT CLEAN AND SIMPLE Not all teenagers love bright colors, posters, and patterns. If your teen prefers neutral color palettes, bring in more dimension with a fluffy carpet, luxe bedding, and an interesting bed frame. If they want to add in more color or décor later, that's always an option - it's best to start with a solid base they can build upon.
9. BOOST PRODUCTIVITY WITH A WORK SPACE A personal work space will make them feel so much more independent (and hopefully boost productivity).
10. HANGING AROUND A hanging chair is always a hit if you have the space, and they are the height of fashion at the moment. They can often be more reasonable than buying a fully upholstered bedroom chair and add big bang for your buck for a fun element. They will be the envy of all their mates and it’s a chair that might get used for something more than just a clothes hanger!

Things you need to know
before decorating your nursery 1. Make sure everything you could possibly need is within easy reach of the changing table. Baby won’t lie there while you go and get the babygrow from the hotpress. Have a changing table or chest of drawers with a changing mat at hand, and put EVERYTHING in there from wipes, babygrow vests etc. 2. A void clutter. You will be carrying a very precious bundle and you don't want to trip over that lovely decorative basket in the middle of the night. 3. T wo words: washable paint. Not to put you off - but babies are messy! 4. D on't be afraid of the dark. Backout blinds are a must, great for when baby is taking a nap in the middle of the day or if you live in a lit-up area. 5. Pick a theme. Choose one accessory or picture and build around that, it makes for a cohesive room. 6. A rt makes a difference. It doesn't have to be specifically for a baby room ei-
ther, it can be a colourful poster or print you love or an original piece that you've bought or made yourself. They can take it with them to their own home and this will happen a lot sooner than you think! 7. B aby furniture. It does not have to be specifically made for a baby. For example, you can buy a chest of drawers and put a changing mat on top instead of buying a changing table. 8. I f you have room, put a bed in there. When you do decide to put baby in the nursery you will be spending a lot of time there. If you don't have room for a bed and a cot together, make sure the chair you choose is comfortable. And remember, babies don't care what the nursery looks like. This is mainly for you and it won’t be long until your little tiny baby will be telling you what they like and want in their room. So enjoy yourself when decorating the nursery - you have free rein!

Nursery with a playful character The aim was to create a welcoming, playful and child friendly nursery that would stand the test of time. The mustard walls wake up the decor in the room and form a pleasant, warm and joyful atmosphere. The rich yellow green wall colour connects with the outside, works with the light in the room
and helps to keep the space appear warm to the eye. The navy is the perfect accent to go with the mustard. The natural wood flooring and linen-look curtains bring a feeling of calm and help to keep the overall interior scheme that is balanced and restful. This all helps to bring a sense of individuality to the nursery. Interior Design by KADRI BORMEISTER

Road closure forces route change for classic car run Millstreet Vintage Club has been forced to change the route of its annual “Circuit of Ireland Rally Stages Revisited” Classic Car run due to the on-going road works on the N71 near Dinis Cottage. Kerry County Council has closed the Moll’s Gap road to facilitate works on a retaining wall near the car park of the popular tourist attraction. Set for this Sunday, the run will begin at Dromtariffe Hall at 11.30am. The route will follow old Circuit of Ireland roads including Mullaghnish, Fuhiry, Borlin, the
Healy Pass and Kilmakilloge. The final portion of the event was due to be a run down Moll’s Gap with a finish in Killarney, but organisers were forced a re-think due to the works which are scheduled to continue until July 5. The club will now return to Killarney via Kilgarvan. “We will turn left near Glenflesk and take in the old Lough Guitane and Curraglass stages instead,” said club member Dan O’Riordan. The run will finish with a barbecue at Killarney Racecourse at around 7pm on Sunday evening.
RETRO: The annual Millstreet run salutes the old Circuit of Ireland Rally and its connection with Killarney and the region.

PRAYER FOR THE EXPECTANT MOTHER PRAYER TO ST. MARGARET Dear Saint Margaret, before your Martyrdom you prayed that whenever an expectant mother ask’s for your protection, her child might be born without harm, because a voice from heaven assured you that your prayers were heard. Help me now in my need, look after myself, watch over my infant and protect both of us all our lives. We ask this through the intercession of Mary, mother of God and infinite mercy of her son, Jesus Christ. Amen. T.K
O Holy Mother Mary, obtain for me a share in the holy dispositions which filled your beautiful soul, during the nine months you bore your divine son. Make me a mother after Gods own heart forming my children to serve him here on earth, and to be a means of spreading his Kingdom and leading other souls to him. St. Joseph head of the holy family pray for the father of this child that he and I may rear our family so that our home may be like the holy home in Nazareth. May the children and we be reunited in the eternal home to rejoice for all eternity at the feet of God. Amen. L.O.C

In loving memory of Denis Gallivan, Knocknaskeha, Killarney, Who died on the 29th June 2011.
A million times I needed you, A million times I cried, If love alone could have saved you, Yo never would have died. In life I loved you dearly, In death I love you still. In my heart you hold a place, That no one could ever fill.
When we are in need of comfort We walk down memory lane There we see you smiling We talk with you again, And as we wander slowly back We seem to hear you say Don’t grieve, don’t cry We’ll meet again someday.
It broke my heart to lose you, But you didn’t go alone. For part of me went with you, The day God took you home.
Always lovingly remembered by your wife Peg and family.
Thinking of you my beautiful Cousin Ails on your 3rd anniversary..

God saw you getting tired, And a cure was not to be, So he put his arms around you, And whispered “Come to me”,
Gone are the days we used to share, But in our hearts you are always there. The gates of memory will never close: We miss you more than anyone knows.
With tearful eyes we watched you, And saw you pass away, And although we loved you dearly, We could not make you stay,
With tender love and deep regret, We who love you will never forget. Gone is the face we loved so dear, silent is the voice, the voice we loved to hear.
A golden heart stopped beating, Hard working hands at rest, God broke our hearts to prove to us, He only takes the best.
Too far away for sight or speech, but not too far for love to reach. Sweet are the memories so clear, in our thoughts you will always be near.
Sadly missed and always remembered by son Neil, your daughter in Law Karen and your grandchildren Kate, Ella and Dara.
Sadly missed and dearly loved, Suzanne, Ger, James, Cillian and Aoibhe.

A case for the defence Kerry’s much-maligned backline needs more protection from midfield, writes Adam Moynihan Before last weekend’s Munster final, many Kerry supporters said they’d just be happy with a close game. Last year’s facile win over Cork was seen as a contributory factor in terms of the team’s poor showing in the Super 8s and while provincial glory seemed inevitable again this time out, a tough match would at least stand us in good stead moving forward. A tough match is exactly what we got, and a seventh consecutive Munster title for good measure, but I doubt many Kerry fans left Páirc Uí Chaoimh on Saturday evening in great spirits. Cork really put it up to the reigning champions down the stretch and the stark reality is that The Kingdom’s threepoint win raised more questions than it answered. Or rather, it left us asking the same old questions all over again. The hosts created as many as seven good goal-scoring opportunities, an eye-watering number at any level but particularly staggering for a senior intercounty final. The full back line of Jason Foley, Tadhg Morley and Tom O’Sullivan (1-1) came in for heavy criticism for their performances but I thought that was quite harsh all things considered. When you break them all down, many of Cork’s chances stemmed from issues
further out the field. Ruairí Deane, named at centre forward, and midfielder Killian O’Hanlon posed problems all day with their runs from deep and the latter set up Cork’s second goal when he was dragged down in the box by Morley. It’s easy to blame Morley for the foul but in reality the play should never have reached that crisis point at the edge of Shane Ryan’s area.
MIDDLE GROUND
Midfield has been a problem for Kerry all year, perhaps most notably in the league final against Mayo when Aidan O’Shea and Matthew Ruane gave Jack Barry and Diarmuid O’Connor a really tough time of it. It was hoped that David Moran would come in and solidify Peter Keane’s midfield but you would have to say that Cork won the battle in that area the last day. No disrespect to O’Hanlon and Maguire, but Kerry will face better midfield partnerships before the year is out. And it’s not just about containing. Kerry need a midfield that can cause problems for the opposition going the other way as well. It’s possible that a player like Gavin White could do a job at 8 or 9 but a Super 8s game against Galway or Donegal might not be the best time for experiments.

SPORT
28.06.2019 If he continues to line out in the half back line, Kerry’s captain, Jack Sherwood and Paul Murphy, talented footballers all, must also bear some of the responsibility for halting, or at least slowing down, their opponent’s running game.
CLIFFORD CLASS
The efficient kicking of Kerry’s forwards is the team’s one saving grace at the moment. Stephen O’Brien scored two good points from play and worked tirelessly throughout. He was certainly deserving of his Man of the Match award. O’Brien’s young Kenmare clubmate Seán O’Shea was accurate as always, while Dara Moynihan and Diarmuid O’Connor both did well enough without being spectacular. Things don’t seem to be clicking for
Paul Geaney at the moment, which is a shame because he’s a fabulous footballer on his day. His red card was probably born out of frustration and he must have been mightily relieved that Cork’s comeback eventually came to nought. David Clifford was class, obviously. Up next for Kerry is a Super 8s opener against Galway (or the team that beats them in Round 4) on July 13/14. Ulster champions Donegal also await the week after and with Mayo/Armagh and Tyrone also likely to advance from the qualifiers, we could potentially be looking at a very tough group indeed. If that full back line doesn’t get some more protection, Kerry might find it hard to improve on last year’s third place finish.

PÁIRC UÍ CHAOIMH
Munster kingpins Kerry secured their seventh provincial title in a row after a refreshingly tight decider in Páirc Uí Chaoimh on Saturday night. Second-half goals by Luke Connolly and Brian Hurley had the hosts level with around 20 minutes to play and an upset was very much on the cards. Kerry just about managed to steady the ship, however, and a late score by substitute Micheál Burns helped to secure a hard-fought three-point win. The Kingdom now advance to the Super 8s which will begin for them with a home fixture in Killarney against Galway or the team that beats Galway in the qualifiers. Heading into Saturday’s game, Peter Keane’s side were strong favourites to prevail yet again in Munster and a firsthalf goal by wandering corner back Tom O’Sullivan as well points from David Clifford, Dara Moynihan and Seán O’Shea gave The Kingdom an early 1-4 to 0-1 advantage. The reigning champions were on top throughout the first period but Cork stayed within striking distance at the break thanks to an opportunistic, palmed goal by Luke Connolly. The visitors led by six at half-time, 1-10 to 1-4. Connolly bagged his second within two minutes of the restart when midfielder Killian O’Hanlon was brought down inside the box by Kerry defender Tadhg Morley. The Nemo Rangers clubman emphatically converted his spot kick high into Shane Ryan’s net and all of a sudden it was a four-point game. In the 47th minute, Ronan McCarthy’s men drew level when Brian Hurley capitalised on a mistake by Kerry keeper Shane Ryan to fist into the empty net. Now the upset was very much on the cards. David Clifford swung over a nice score in the 53rd minute to re-establish Kerry’s two-point lead but Cork were given a boost just seconds later when Paul Geaney was shown a black card for a late challenge on Kevin Flahive. The Dingle marksman was already on a yellow so referee Anthony Nolan had no choice but to give him his marching orders. Cork gave as good as got in the final

quarter and when Mark Collins kicked his eighth point of the day in the 70th minute, the lead was cut to just one. Moments later, Kerry substitute Micheál Burns was on hand to receive a pass from David Clifford and the Dr Crokes forward swung over an important score to make it a two-point game with just four minutes of additional time to go. The ever-reliable Seán O’Shea added a free in the 73rd minute and Kerry were Munster champions for the 81st time. CORK SCORERS: Mark Collins (0-8, 6f), Luke Connolly 2-0 (1-0 pen), Brian Hurley (1-0), Seán White (0-1) and James Loughrey (0-1). Connacht runners-up Galway (or the team that beats them in Round 4 of the Qualifiers) and Meath (or the team that beats them) will complete the line-up. Declan Bonner’s side showed ruthless efficiency in Clones on Sunday as they ran up a seven-point lead by half-time. Cavan fought back in the second period but a well-taken goal by in-form forward Jamie Brennan in the 58th minute all but sealed the tie as a contest. Donegal are now widely being touted as the second best team in the country. Kerry will face the Ulster champions in Croke Park in the second fixture of the round robin series on July 20/21. Following their three-point victory over Cork, Peter Keane’s men will open their Super 8s phase with a home match in Killarney against Galway or the team that beats them. They will then round off the group with an away tie against Meath or the team that beats them in Round 4. Dublin, who hammered Meath in last weekend’s lopsided Leinster final, slot into Group 2 alongside Connacht champions Roscommon. Jim Gavin’s men will face the Rossies on neutral ground
(Croke Park) on July 20/21. Their first game will be at home (Croke Park) against Cork or the team that beats them, and their final fixture will come against Cavan or the team that beats them. In the All-Ireland semi-finals, which will take place an August 10/11, the winners of Group 1 will face the runners-up in Group 2 and the winners of Group 2 will face the runners-up from Group 1. The 2019 All-Ireland final is scheduled for September 1. The draw for the third phase of the Qualifiers was made on Monday morning and the tie of the round sees Mayo host Armagh in Castlebar. This year’s league champions beat Down by five points on Saturday and they will be expected to advance to Round 4, but Armagh impressed last time out en route to a huge 2-17 to 1-12 win over Monaghan. The match is live on Sky Sports at 7pm on Saturday. Kildare’s home clash against Tyrone will also be televised (Sky Sports, 5pm) while in the other games, Westmeath entertain Clare and Offaly make the short journey to Portlaoise to face Laois.

Kerry minors down Cork with late flurry This year’s Kerry minor team secured the county’s seventh Munster Championship in a row by defeating old rivals Cork in a keenly contested decider on Saturday. | By Adam Moynihan The Kingdom were hot favourites on the back of their comprehensive 16-point victory over the same opposition in the group phase but Cork started well and led in the first half thanks to a goal from Kelan Scannell and an unfortunate OG. Kerry finished the period in the ascendency, however, and a goal by Colin Crowley from Templenoe drew the sides level. A second Kerry goal, this time from influential marksman Dylan Geaney, meant James Costello’s side led by two, 2-8 to 2-6, at the break. Kevin Goulding added a third Kerry three-pointer after the interval but Cork showed great determination to stay in touch and when Conor Corbett pointed a free in the 59th minute, The Rebels were level.

Fortunately for Kerry, substitute Emmett O’Shea from Fossa had an immediate reply and captain Jack O’Connor and Darragh Lynch added the insurance points. Kerry now advance to the All-Ireland quarter-final where they will face the runners-up of the Ulster final between Monaghan and Tyrone. The quarter-final will take place at the end of July. COUNTY LEAGUE PREVIEW
x
East Kerry rivals collide in Division 1 | By Adam Moynihan
There will be plenty of old scores to settle this weekend as Legion host Rathmore and Dr Crokes take on Spa in Division 1 of the County League. Legion and Rathmore have met on numerous occasions in recent years with the Killarney club winning the most recent encounter in Rathbeg. That victory in the Club Championship in April has put Liam Hassett’s side in the unenviable position of having to face a relegation playoff against Kilcummin, with the loser dropping down to Intermediate for 2020. Rathmore will be keen to avenge that particular defeat and they have been in good form in the league, Aidan O’Mahony’s last-gasp goal sealing victory over leaders An Ghaeltacht last time out. The club from the border have won their last three games and are currently one of seven clubs who find themselves in a tie for top spot. Legion, meanwhile, will be hoping to bounce back from their disappointing defeat to Dr Crokes a fortnight ago.
Crokes, who have recovered from an indifferent start to join the division’s top teams on eight points, can make it two derby wins in as many weeks if they manage to get the better of Spa on Saturday evening. Elsewhere in the top flight, Kilcummin host Dingle in a rematch of the Club Championship game that sentenced the All-Ireland Intermediate champions to a relegation playoff.
DIVISION 2
The situation is beginning to look bleak for bottom of the table Glenflesk who take on second place Kenmare on Sunday afternoon at 2pm. A win would certainly provide a timely boost. Dr Crokes B are currently mid-table and they will have a decent opportunity to pick up their fourth win of the campaign when they take on Ardfert (Sunday at 3.30pm). Also in Division 2, sixth place Beaufort can make it three wins on the trot if they can get one over on Annascaul back in Paddy Kennedy Park. Throw-in on Sunday is at 2pm.

Nagle and Breen to tackle Rally Finland with Hyundai | By Sean Moriarty
Paul Nagle and Craig Breen will become the first all-Republic of Ireland crew to contest a round of the WRC as part of a manufacturer-backed entry.
The Kerry/Waterford crew are set to return to the World Rally Championship after securing a deal to contest Rally Finland with the Hyundai Motorsport World Rally team. The deal, which was announced on Tuesday of this week, includes the August 2-4 Rally Finland and Rally Estonia on July 12-13.
FIRST PIC: Craig Breen and Paul Nagle testing the Volkswagen Polo R5 ahead of this weekend’s Ypres Rally in Belgium. Pic: Ypres Rally.
The Estonian event is billed as a World Championship promotional event and has already attracted some of the sport’s biggest names. Nagle previously won Rally Finland in 2016 alongside Northern Ireland’s Kris Meeke when they were part of the Citroen World Rally Team. Their teammate on that occasion was Breen, who had British co-driver Scott Martin alongside on their way to recording third overall and Breen’s first WRC podium. They have been contesting selected international rallies all over Europe this season but always maintained that a return to the top-level was the target. So far this year they have recorded four Irish championship victories, including the Rally of the Lakes in a Ford Fiesta R5. They also won the Italian championship counting Rallye San Remo in a Skoda Fabia R5 and this weekend they are the number two seed for the legendary Ypres Rally in Belgium on board a Volkswagen Polo R5. “I am chuffed to be given this chance,” said Breen. “It’s been a long and patient wait, having to watch everyone else drive this year. I am honoured to have this one-off opportunity with Paul as my co-driver.” Breen has competed in Finland every year since 2009, with the exception of 2013. Nagle has competed on the event six times, his first back in 2011 alongside Meeke in a Prodrive-run Mini Cooper. The following year he competed alongside Breen in a Ford Fiesta on their way to winning the SWRC – effectively the division two world title. “Finland is the rally I’ve done most in the

I’ll be competing with the #42, a number I’ve raced with since my first year in karting in 1998, and that has always been very lucky. Let’s hope it remains that way.”

T RAGEDY IN DONEGAL
The rally community in Kerry and beyond was deeply shocked to learn that Manus Kelly was fatally injured in an accident while competing on last weekend’s Donegal International Rally. Manus Kelly was the only driver to win the Donegal International Rally three times in a row and is also a former and popular winner of the Rally of the Lakes (2018). The rally was called off immediately and competing crews were redirected
to the Milford service park while the emergency services dealt with the accident. |
R AVEN'S ROCK RALLY
Rally action this weekend centres on the Waterford-city based Raven’s Rock Rally, the fifth round of both the Irish National Rally Championship and Southern 4 Regional Championship. Bob Moran and Elaine Ní Shé renew their Circuit of Kerry partnership on board the Glenflesk man’s Ford Escort Mk2 while Denis Nagle and Donagh
Crowley will be chasing class nine honours in their Nissan Micra. In the junior section Colin O’Donoghue and Seán Collins will be one of the top seeds in their Escort and they will face opposition from Rally of the Lakes junior class winners Kieran Reen and Mark O'Leary who are driving a Honda Civic. |

Later in the day he finished second after championship leader Joe Grant crashed out in the difficult conditions. Doherty now trails Grant by just 13 points at the halfway point of the season.
