Mixed reaction to Fitzgerald Stadium as homecoming venue

There has been a mixed reaction to the Kerry GAA County Board’s decision to host Monday’s homecoming for the victorious Kerry football team in Fitzgerald Stadium and not the traditional Glebe Car park. | By Sean Moriarty Many felt that the stadium lacked atmosphere and the crowd that turned out to welcome the team home fell well short of previous successful years and was significantly less than the crowd that attended the Tralee homecoming a few hours earlier. An estimated 13,000 people lined Denny St in the county capital on Monday evening. “Just a few words on the tremendous reception this evening from this fantastic crowd. I was lucky enough to be here 25 years ago when we turned down Denny Street with Paidí Ó Sé leading us with the Sam Maguire, not having won it for eleven years,” manager Jack O’Connor told the assembled crowd. "We thought we would never see the likes of it again with 20 to 25,000 lining the streets. But there has to be at least that if not more this evening so that is amazing in itself.”

Later that evening the team travelled to Killarney and to a new welcome venue in Fitzgerald Stadium. Crowds were visibly smaller than previous similar events in the Glebe and were more scattered thanks to the vast area of the Lewis Road pitch. “They got it all wrong,” Cllr Donal Grady told the Killarney Advertiser. “The town of Killarney should have done a lot more for our victorious Kerry team. The whole thing lacked atmosphere. You could see it in the players faces.” The unavailability of the Glebe car park forced the hand of the organising committee but they felt that the crowds were on par with previous town centre events. Cllr Niall ‘Botty’ O’Callaghan MC’d the night, as he has done for many home-

comings in the past. “It worked very well, I thought, especially for young kids who would not have had room in the Glebe to see everything,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “For a first time it worked well, like all new things you learn, maybe put a stage in the next time, or have the open top bus go through town and up to the stadium. It made no difference to businesses as they are busy anyway for the last Monday in July.” The committee in charge of the Kerry Senior Football team Welcome Home event includes members of the Kerry County Board, the East Kerry Board, the Fitzgerald Stadium Committee, Killarney Municipal District Council, Kerry County Council, the Gardaí and the Fire Service. “The Town Council and the Gardaí made

it known to this committee that they were not happy to see a second car park in the town centre unavailable during the height of the busy tourist season the Glebe Car Park would have had to be closed off on Sunday evening and all-day Monday and the Fairhill Car Park is currently used by Bird’s Funfair. In the absence of any other suitable venue in the town it was decided to hold the event in Fitzgerald Stadium,” John O'Leary of the Kerry GAA Executive Committee told the Killarney Advertiser. “In my opinion there was a similar crowd to other victorious ‘Welcome Home’ events held in Killarney but obviously you cannot compare a crowd in a fouracre field with a crowd in a confined town centre location such as the Glebe Car Park.”

David Clifford named Player of the Year Kerry's triumphant win over Galway in Sunday's All Ireland Football final was watched by an average of 862,000 viewers and a share of 75% of those watching TV at the time.

PLAYER OF THE YEAR: David Clifford celebrates with coach Paddy Tally and Kerry fans at Monday night's homecoming at Fitzgerald Stadium. Photo: Marie Carroll-O'Sullivan

Viewing numbers on RTÉ2 peaked at 5.03 pm with 960,000 people watching as referee Sean Hurson added five minutes of extra time. There were 131,000 live streams on the RTÉ Player. Following a tight match, the Sam Maguire Cup returns to the kingdom for the first time since 2014 after Sean O' Shea

received the cup from GAA President Larry McCarthy. Yesterday marked Kerry's 38th Senior Championship title. It was a momentous day for Kerry's number 14, David Clifford, finally achieving his dream of winning his first Senior All-Ireland medal. During The Sunday Game he was firstly named 'Man of the Match' and RTÉ's team of panellists also awarded him 'The Sunday Game Player of the Year.' On The Sunday Game next Sunday evening at 9.30 pm on RTÉ2 Des Cahill presents highlights of the Ladies Football All-Ireland Finals from Croke Park.

Premier of Kerry film showcased to a full house at Cinema Killarney The glitz and glamour of Hollywood came to Killarney on Wednesday night when the Kerry International Film Festival premiered ‘Joyride’. | By Sean Moriarty The film, shot entirely on location in County Kerry, and starring Oscar winner Olivia Colman and newcomer (and the star of the show) Charlie Reid, made its Kerry debut in Cinema Killarney ahead of going on general release this weekend.

It tells the story of family, motherhood and social issues in an action packed, often funny and often sad, journey through life and Kerry. A huge number of local people were involved in the production of Joyride, both as cast and crew and by providing locations, so there was great excitement

in the cinema to see the finished film on the big screen. Filmed exclusively in Kerry last year, Joyride is set to be released across the UK and Ireland on Friday, so those who attended the preview screening, hosted by KIFF in association with Screen Kerry, were in for a real treat as they got to see an array of local actors, extras and of course, world-renowned Kerry scenery on the big screen for the first time. ‘Joyride’ was written by Kerry based Ailbhe Keogan, who is a Kerry International Film Board member and a graduate of Kerry College, and directed by Emmy award winning Emer Reynolds. Keogan told the packed audience how she was inspired to write the screenplay when she herself struggled with motherhood and, at the same time, heard a radio news story about a young joyrider who stole a car in County Tipperary with a new-born baby on board. “I wondered if this boy racer could have been my own saviour,” she said. Dublin-based Reynolds, an Emmy award winning director and writer added: “It was really important to show this film in Kerry, we got incredible help from the people of Kerry and the county is another character in the film.

Wednesday’s premiere was organised in conjunction with Screen Kerry. That organisation’s Siobhan O’Sullivan said: “as well as being a movie about motherhood and friendship, Joyride is inherently a love letter to the county. Its success shows the potential Kerry has to welcome many more productions to the county.” She is right, not only is ‘Joyride’ an advert for the movie business, it is an advert for Kerry tourism, and while many of the locations were off the traditional tourists paths (Carragh Lake, The Short Mountain and Brosna all feature) it will inspire movie lovers to visit these areas. It was also the shot in the arm that the Kerry film industry badly needed. ‘Joyride’ was shot over a ten-week period last summer while the county was still in the depths of Covid-19 restrictions. If this is what the movie industry in Kerry can deliver under restriction, imagine what can be achieved without any setbacks. Well done to all involved and, Killarney Advertiser readers, go see it as soon as you can – you won’t be disappointed.

Motorcyclist to remember tragic son A Cork man who lost his son to suicide is to visit Killarney next week as he attempts to ride his late son’s restored motorcycle in all 32 counties over the next month. Bunny O’ Riordan, is from Little Island, East Cork, lost his son in November 2009. After many years of seeking to get well himself, he sought to restore his sons motorbike in his memory, and this has led to the setup of the Midleton Bike Project. The Midleton Bike Project has developed into the Middleton Hub, a safe haven for people who need to help or just want a

quiet and peaceful place to go while suffering from mental health issues. Over the past four years the hub has managed to rent an old warehouse and do very basic works to the building (recycled kitchens etc) and this has provided a safe place for people who have been left behind due to suicide. The hub is completely voluntary and has no government funding at present. They are seeking to raise €100,000 to upgrade and renovate the facility. Bunny is preparing to do a 32 county motorbike run around Ireland for suicide on the Yamaha RD350 bike that his son

owned. He will set of from Middleton on Monday morning, arriving in Bantry later that day. On Tuesday he and his group of friends will leave the West Cork town before overnighting in Killarney. They are due in Killarney around 4pm on Tuesday and will visit the Ballyspillane Family Resource Centre on arrival. They are also hopping to stop off at the Killarney Outlet Centre but that leg of the journey is not yet confirmed. On Wednesday morning the group will leave Killarney and head to Limerick via Tralee and Abbeyfeale.

Leah is a member of the Irish Under 16 Ladies Basketball team and they are contesting the European Championships in Montenegro in mid-August. She is just back from smaller tournaments in Luxembourg, England and Scotland and travels on a weekly basis to Dublin

for training sessions. Despite being a member of the Irish team she must cover her own travel expenses and that is why her head coach Patricia McCarthy and her teammates have come together to organise Saturday’s fundraiser. “We are very grateful for the work Patricia and Paul Sheehan [St Paul’s chairman] put it and thank them and all at St Paul’s for the support,” Leah’s father Karl told the Killarney Advertiser. The cake sale will take place at the Navé Coffee House on the grounds of Killarney Racecourse from 12 noon until 2pm on Saturday.

Killarney will have a team in the Women’s National Basketball League for the first time since 2012. St. Paul’s Killarney return to the top flight this season after winning the Women’s Division 1 National Cup last term. Head coach James Fleming returns to his home club, after being involved with Fr. Mathews and Limerick Celtics in recent seasons. His aim is to establish the team as a competitive force, with Canadian Sophia Paska and Irish underage international Leah McMahon already committed to the team. “We’re delighted to be back in the league, we have several signings from Team Garvey’s St. Mary’s, including former St. Paul’s Killarney player Rhiann O’Shea. "We also have current Ireland U16 international Leah McMahon and also a number of other former St. Paul’s Killarney

players, who have played internationally, such as Lynn Jones and Cassandra Buckley. "We’ve also recruited Canadian Sophia Paska, who I worked with at Limerick Celtics last year, and American Yuleska Ramirez Tejeda, who was MissQuote.ie Division 1 Player of the Year last season, while playing with Limerick Sport Huskies.” The Killarney team is one of five new teams to enter the MissQuote.ie Division 1 for the 2022/23 season. Virginia-based McEvoy’s Cavan Eagles will be joined by three new entrants from Dublin - Oblate Basketball Club, McGowan’s Tolka Rovers and Abbey Seals Dublin Lions.

Algae warning extended to New speed camera Muckross Lake zone in Fossa Road Deaths Since 2000

The algae warning on the Lakes of Killarney has been extended A new safety camera zone in Fossa is one of 61 new zones that become to include Muckross Lake. operational on Tuesday this week. Last week Kerry Council erected signage at a number of locations along the shore of Lough Leane to advise members of the public of the potential for an algal bloom in the water and on the shoreline. Those who frequent the shoreline are being advised to exercise caution. Members of the public are advised not to bathe in water if there are visible signs of algal blooms in vicinity. They are also advised to ensure that they keep their dogs under control as such algal accumulations can be harmful on ingestion. “Following the erection of signage at a number of locations along the shore of Lough Leane last week to advise members of the public of the potential for an algal bloom in the water and on the shoreline, Kerry County Council has ex-

tended the precautionary signage to encompass Muckross Lake, due to the predicted weather forecast,” said a council spokesperson. “In accordance with protocols for these situations, precautionary signage has been erected at locations along Lough Leane and those who frequent the shoreline are being advised to exercise caution. Members of the public are advised not to bathe in water if there are visible signs of algal blooms in vicinity. They are also advised to ensure that they keep their dogs under control as such algal accumulations can be harmful on ingestion.” The situation is being monitored closely on an ongoing basis by Kerry County Council.

The new safety camera zone is on The Gap road which links Fossa village with the Dunloe area. One person lost their lives on this stretch of road in the last ten years. The primary purpose of safety cameras is to reduce speed-related collisions, lessen injuries and save lives. To date in 2022, there have been 94 road deaths an increase in 28 over 2021 and 13 to date in 2019. Safety cameras operate in areas where there is a history of speed related collisions known as speed enforcement zones. New locations were selected following an analysis of collated Garda data acquired from fatal, serious and minor road traffic collisions and from further consideration given to locations of concern highlighted by local communities through local Garda Community engagement. The new zones are spread across 23 counties, 49% on Regional Routes,

31% National Routes and 20% on other routes (Motorway, Local Roads etc.). Superintendent Thomas Murphy, Garda National Roads Policing Bureau said: "When someone decides to speed they put themselves and members of their community at risk, particularly children, older people, cyclists and other motorists. Our priority is to ensure that the vast majority of people who use the roads responsibly are not put in danger by a minority of reckless drivers who continue to drive at excessive speed.” GoSafe vans operate in areas that have a speed-related collision history where fatal, serious injury and minor injury collisions occur. Locations which have been highlighted by members of the community as being areas of concern, have been included in the new zones. By identifying and targeting these high-risk areas, the aim is to reduce the number of fatal and serious injury collisions." Superintendent Murphy added: "The deployment of safety cameras has been proven to save lives. I call on every road user to play their part to make the roads safer for all.”

THE KILLARNEY ADVERTISER SAYS Our journalist SEAN MORIARTY shares his thoughts on the week's news

The AIB issue isn’t gone way Last week, after mounting public and political pressure AIB reversed a decision to make several banks cash less.

HOSTS: James Patrice and Maura Derrane will host this year's RSVP Roadshows.

RSVP Roadshow is coming to Killarney

The bank said that it is experiencing a 36% decline in cash withdrawals from ATMs and a 50% fall in cheque usage over the past five years. Additionally there has been an almost 50% drop in over-the-counter teller transactions, while mobile and online payments have increased by 85%. One local shopkeeper told me that the split is now 70% and 30% cash at his store.

Any business that notices a 70% change in core activities will have to make changes in order to survive. It is plain to see, that we as a society, are relying less and less on cash. AIB will have to make some changes to keep their costs down and while their reversal might have been a victory for the ordinary person you can be sure that they will announce more cutbacks in coming weeks to counter this. The phrase use it or lose it comes to mind. Remember when every town had several travel agents and phone booths on the high street?

The RSVP Roadshow is will come to Killarney on September 1. Hosts, James Patrice and Maura Derrane, take over the beautiful Killarney Oaks Hotel for a night of the latest in fashion, beauty, dentistry and hair. They will be joined by some of Ireland's leading style, beauty and aesthetic experts, for amazing fashion and beauty tips, fashion shows, plus loads more! “Think fun, fashion, generous goodie

bags packed with amazing products, premium spot prizes, bubbles and bites and the best after party in town,” said an event spokesperson. The event kicks off with a drinks reception a canapés on arrival. Tickets cost €35 (+booking fee) via the eventbrite website.

Killarney Hotels group reveals new employee benefitsa A Killarney Hotel group is leading the way with a new set of employee benefits. The Killarney Hotels collection, consisting of The Europe Hotel and Resort, The Dunloe Hotel and Gardens and Ard na Sidhe Country House has announced an increase of its this week. As of August 1 the company’s family leave policy has been extended to include payment for employees who are on maternity, adoptive and paternity Leave. “This is sokethin something that is not legally required here in Ireland,” Michelle Diggins, Sales and Marketing Executive, Killarney Hotels Collection. The new benefit will see payment from

the company for the full maternity, adoptive and paternal leave periods. The expanded family leave policy joins the list of extraordinary benefits the company already offers to employees including an industry leading pension scheme, DIS benefit, onsite state of the art staff accommodation, dedicated in house employee restaurant, employee discounts to name but a few. “At Killarney Hotels Collection, we want to support our employees so they can spend more time with their newborn. By enhancing our benefits we hope to attract and retain top talent in the hospitality industry,” said Michael Brennan, Managing Director of Killarney Hotels Collection.

Christmas comes early for Jesse Buckley Jessie Buckley has been cast in Netflix’s Christmas Special ‘Scrooge: A Christmas Carol’. Charles Dickens' ageless legend is set to reborn in this supernatural, time-travelling, musical adaptation of the one of the world’s favourite Christmas stories. The animated production is expected to drop on Netflix in early December. The film stars Luke Evans (voices Scrooge), Olivia Colman (voices Past), Buckley (voices Isabel Fezziwig) and Johnny Flynn (voices Bob Cratchit). “It’s been a fascinating challenge to adapt such a beloved and often-told

story. I think this version will give those who know A Christmas Carol all the things they expect, but not as they’ve experienced them before,” said Director Stephen Donnelly. “There are more than enough psychedelic, time-travelling and musical surprises to keep those familiar with the story on the edge of their seats, while the authentic essence of Dickens has been retained for those coming completely fresh to the classic tale. I can’t wait to share this new version of A Christmas Carol with the world and sincerely hope audiences embrace it this year and for many to come.”

Tetiana Olkhovikova: "I want to go back to February 23, but I have to move on" | By Natalya Krasnenkova Tetiana Olkhovikova lived in Kyiv in a high-rise building. Tetiana Olkhovikova lived in Kyiv in a high-rise building. On the evening of February 23, she sat in her kitchen and prepared documents for the court process, drank tea, looked at the lights of the big city and planned her future. Tetiana is a successful young lawyer in the field of judicial law. On the morning of February 24, flashes of rocket fire around Kyiv and explosions could be seen and heard from the windows of her house. The war began. Life changed in an instant. For several nights, the young woman and her boyfriend spent time in the basement, because it was dangerous to stay in the apartment on the 24th floor. Especially when a Russian missile hit the ninth floor of a building a few blocks away from Tetiana. Then they decided to go to western Ukraine. Evacuation trains going from the capital to western Ukraine were full of people. People travelled for many hours while standing, there was no place to sit down. Suitcases that did not fit on the train were simply left on the railway station platform. Tetiana spent 12 hours in such a train standing in the corridor. All the time, she, as a lawyer, thought that all norms of international law, all laws on people's rights were destroyed by the Russians overnight. All that knowledge she received at the University and relied on in her pro-

Tetiana experienced a strong emotional upheaval when she realised that the laws no longer protect the lives and dignity of people, nor their property or business. Everything collapsed because of the brutal aggression of the Russian army. Once in Ireland, Tetiana worked for a while in a cafe, but realised that she

would be more useful in her main specialty as a lawyer. Therefore, the young woman decided to help Ukrainians who, like her, face many legal issues here in Ireland every day. "How to get a residence permit, how to organise your own business, how to arrange for the children to move, how to pay taxes, how to find a place to rent?" and many other "hows" she be-

gan to explain on her Instagram page ‘From_Ukraine_to_Ireland’. Her audience is growing every day, in four months there are already more than 4,000 subscribers. Currently, Tatyana conducts live broadcasts for Ukrainians in Ireland and Ukraine, records videos, explaining basic legal issues. Every day, she receives more and more questions from Ukrainians. To do this, Tetiana studies the legislation of Ireland and helps her compatriots find answers and understand the legislation in the new country. She also founded a Telegram channel for lawyers from Ukraine, where they discuss professional issues and plan professional development. Soon Tetiana is going to a conference in Dublin. Her goal is to improve her English and find a job in a law firm. She will be happy if she can work for a law firm in Ireland. She believes that providing advice to newly arrived Ukrainians in Ireland can become a separate area of local law firms. Tetiana still believes that laws exist to protect people and make their lives comfortable and orderly. Tetiana does not hide that sometimes it is very difficult for her emotionally: a foreign country, separation from home and loved ones, a new life in which you cannot plan anything in advance. Tetiana admits that she would like to return to her past life, on the day of February 23, when she spent the evening in her cozy kitchen. But she is forced to get up and move on. Walking in the park, running and cycling help her in this.

Valentia Island opens new ‘Eighth Wonder’ experience Over 150 years ago, Valentia Island was at the centre of a revolution that changed the world - and now you can discover why, at Valentia Cable Station. ‘Eighth Wonder’ is a new interactive installation that reveals the astounding story of the transatlantic cable laid between Valentia and Newfoundland. The transatlantic cable was called the Eighth Wonder of the World, the wire that changed the world, and it stretched 3,000 kilometres beneath the ocean and cut communication times between Europe and North America from weeks to minutes. It was the beginning of global communications, and behind it lies an astonishing story of human endurance, science, adventure, genius - and the biggest ship in the world. Valentia's crucial role in transatlantic cable project - the technological equivalent at the time of putting a man on the moon

- is told in this immersive visitor experience at the Valentia Cable Station. You can send your own morse code message and try to break the code, discover the underwater cables of today and see how communications technology has changed. Eighth Wonder reveals how Valentia played a crucial role in an astounding human achievement that still influences how we live today. ‘Eighth Wonder’ was developed through Fáilte Ireland’s ‘New Horizons on the Wild Atlantic Way’ Grants Scheme with €200,000 being provided to bring the transatlantic cable experience to life again. Way coastal route, designed to unlock the great stories the region has to offer. Wild Atlantic Way Manager at Fáilte Ireland, Josephine O’Driscoll, said: “The Visitor Experience Development Plan for the Skellig’s Coast, which was developed in consultation with local stakeholders, tourism businesses and the community, identified a number of development projects to bring local experiences along the Skellig Coast to life to help drive and sustain tourism in the area. Following the launch of the plan, we invested in a number of projects including €200,000 in the development of the ‘Eighth Wonder’ visitor experience at Valentia Cable Station and it is fantastic to see the project come to fruition. Innovative visitor experiences such as this are hugely important in attracting visitors and encouraging them to stay longer in the area and will be critical as we look towards driving a continued recovery of the tourism sector.”

A WEEKLY ROUND-UP OF NEWS • VIEWS FROM KERRY AND AROUND THE WORLD SUPPORT

KILLARNEY

INSPIRED BY DANNY CASEY

Slea Head to go one way for next three weeks Kerry County Council, in conjunction with Fáilte Ireland, is continuing to trial a clockwise traffic management system for visitors on Slea Head Drive from Friday July 29 to Monday 22 August.

During this trial period, the Council asks that larger vehicles travel in a clockwise direction around Slea Head, starting at Dingle town, then on to Ventry, Slea Head, Coumeenole, Dunquin, Ballyferriter, Muríoch, Feohanagh and back to Dingle.

The trial, taking place on this occasion during the peak visitor season, follows a similar trial which took place earlier this year and will inform future considerations on traffic management in the area. A Kerry County Council employee will be positioned each day from 10.30 am to

4.00pm at Coumeenole to encourage larger vehicles that are driving in the incorrect direction to follow the correct route. “Visitors will be encouraged to follow the recommended route from the outset resulting in more time to relax and enjoy the magnificent views, attractions, history and culture of this beautiful part of Kerry,” said a council statement. Local access will be maintained as normal. Extensive directional signage advising of the clockwise system will be erected locally.

Milltown hosts ‘Féile Lughnasadh’ this Bank Holiday weekend The only place to be for all the family this August weekend has to be Milltown.

Sharon Shannon

Live music free and open air for four nights, featuring the best acts in the trad business, including Sharon Shannon, Jiggy, Killarney band The Rising, as well as local talent in the festival club and in the local bars. Kids events include Thursday night parade and storytelling and games in the square on Sunday. Young musicians will be welcome to perform in the festival club also. All the

main acts play live at 9pm on the gig rig in the square. Another popular favourite in Milltown is the outdoor Céili, always a great spectacle and reaches back to the days of crossroads dances. Uí Bhriain are a huge draw for dancers and Féile Lughnasadh will be no exception, with a full programme of events on Sunday including the Food and Craft Fair, kids’ events and the Street Entertainment Competition which will all create a wonderful atmosphere in Milltown. See facebook and Instagram for full details. It is no mean achievement to have

brought such illustrious names to this mid-Kerry village. Organiser Owen O’Shea has fond memories of memorable nights, with crowds enthralled by the best in the business. “Bringing the best to our town is a huge part of the work of our local Comhaltas group, and we are very proud to have provided such musical experiences to the people of Kerry,” he said “Milltown’s central location, excellent facilities and local services have made it a hugely popular location for events and this is a key aspect of its continuing success.”

Endangered Natterjack toads conservation project Almost 500 Natterjack toadlets were released at Castlegregory with the help of the local community.

West Kerry man sets sail on world voyage Irish sailor Pat Lawless has departed from Crosshaven in County Cork on his mission to become the first Irish person to sail around the world non-stop as part of the Golden Globe Race. The Golden Globe Race 2022 will begin on September 4 when 18 sailors depart Les Sables-d’Olonne and aim to sail solo, non-stop around the world, via the five Great Capes and return to Les Sables-d’Olonne. Pat has named his boat 'Green Rebel'. Once he leaves Crosshaven he will head to Spain to take part

in the prologue race before the main event. This is a 280-mile course that will lead the sailors from Gijón to the port of Sables d’Olonne for the start of the Golden Globe Race. Pat said: “I cannot wait to get started and I want to thank everyone for their support so far. I am really looking forward to the race and making Ireland proud. Thank you to all my sponsors and to Green Rebel for their support. Myself and my boat, which is called Green Rebel, will be at the start line in France in September and we will be flying the flag for Ireland.”

Killarney MEP welcomes councillors to Brussels MEP for Ireland South Seán Kelly welcomed a group of Fine Gael Councillors to the European Parliament this week. Local Councillors from across the constituency of Ireland South joined MEP Kelly in Brussels for a series of meetings, discussions and fact-finding tours. The group included local representatives from Cork, Kerry, Tipperary, Limerick, Wicklow and Wexford. “I was delighted to host such an engaging group of Councillors in the European Parliament this week,” MEP Kelly said. “It is crucial that local representatives have an opportunity to engage with European politics, and indeed that the local issues that matter most to people are highlighted at European level.” “This trip represented a valuable oppor-

tunity to exchange on a range of issues, both local and European, and to discuss the ways in which European policymaking can be made relevant for people in a local context.” The group of Councillors also met with Commissioner Mairead McGuinness and received a briefing from Ambassador Eamonn MacAodha of Ireland’s Permanent Representation to the European Union, who discussed the role of the Permanent Representation in bridging the gap between the national and European levels of government. They were given a tour of the European Parliament in Brussels, and the Parliament’s excellent visitors’ service provided an overview of the work of MEPs. The group also travelled to the city of Bruges in Flanders.

These included toadlets that had spawned in captivity – a first for Ireland and a major milestone in this joint conservation project to protect the endangered Natterjack between National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) and Fota Wildlife Park. Captive rearing plays an important role in the conservation of this unique and endangered amphibian and, through these efforts, over 6,000 individuals have been successfully released into the wild to date. Natterjacks endure natural mortality rates as high as 90%, with large numbers of eggs and tadpoles typically lost every summer due to predators and ponds drying out. 2022 has been a particularly challenging year for the toads, with the dry spring and summer meaning that spawning in the wild was very limited. Through this project, staff from NPWS collect toad spawn and tadpoles from ponds in the wild and transport them to Fota where they are carefully looked after in special holding tanks over the

summer months (captive rearing). Following metamorphosis, the resulting toadlets are then returned to the species’ native range in Kerry. For the first time, the project also produced its own toadlets this year. A small number of mature natterjacks are being held in Fota and these produced spawn (captive breeding), providing a timely boost to the conservation efforts to save the species. The natural range of the natterjack toad is restricted to the coastal zones of Castlemaine Harbour and Castlegregory. The species suffered significant losses in range and population in the early 20th century due to land reclamation and changes in agricultural practises in these areas. Latest estimates put the population at less than 10,000 individuals in the wild. As a result the natterjack toad is considered to be endangered in Ireland and is protected under the EU’s Habitats Directive. NPWS efforts to address habitat loss for the toad have focussed on pond creation schemes, with some success. A new results-based farm plan scheme specifically for natterjack toads is now being rolled out by NPWS with local farmers.

Eric came to Ireland in the 1980’s to work at the Presentation Secondary School, Milltown as a student of English and as part of his studies in the university of Rennes This was the beginning of a love affair with Kerry. 140 cars on display at annual classic car show Over 140 cars, motorbikes and jeeps were on display at the Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club’s annual show at the racecourse on Sunday. Despite the rain there was a great atmosphere in the racecourse as the club laid on an open air big screen TV so those attending the event could watch the All Ireland football final too. “Members of the club left no stone unturned in organising this event and the huge turn-out is a credit to their hard

work and commitment,” explained club member Rich O’Donoghue. “After the two year break there was great excitement building ahead of this event which welcomed over 140 vintage cars, jeeps and motorbikes from 1922 to 2002 on show. Along with these impressive vintage cars, jeeps and motorbikes the newly restored 1982 Toyota Starlet was also on display. “This attracted massive attention and people were very generous in supporting the club’s raffle which is supporting a number of local charities.” The club thanked Killarney Racecourse and Navé Coffee House and The Spúnóg

Takeaway for their hospitality on the day. “A fantastic result meant the day ended on a high. We would like to wish the Kerry team a massive congratulations on a brilliant performance. It was a great day all around,” added Rich. The Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club were delighted and very appreciative of the support from the public and the people who brought their vintage vehicles which are a credit to the owners who are preserving the great cars of the past into the future,” The Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club will host another show at the same venue on September 11.

Time to up cash usage to prevent talk of bank closures in the future Cllr Jackie Healy Rae has urged people to use more cash in their day-to-day dealings in order to prevent any thoughts that banks might have to reduce services in rural areas. Last week the AIB bank reversed plans under public pressure to close up to 70 branches throughout Ireland, mostly in rural areas admitting that they were “recognising the customer and public unease that this [planned closures] has caused.” In recent times there has been a 36% decline in cash withdrawals from ATMs

and a 50% fall in cheque usage over the past five years. AIB revealed that they also saw a fall of almost 50% in branch over-the-counter teller transactions, while mobile and online payments have increased by 85% in that same timeframe. “Small businesses, local community groups and even GAA clubs all need

cash bank transactions to see them through their daily or weekly businesses and people literally have the choice in their own hands to use more cash to prevent banks from making further plays in the future at closing down branches,” Cllr Healy Rae said. “We all saw how quickly telephone kiosks were removed from rural Ireland when we were not watching and the amount of ATM cash machines are declining each day from small towns and villages and we still have the ability in our hands to influence this.”

Cllr Jackie Healy Rae

Electric Cars – what you need to know Electric vehicles are fast becoming the preferred choice for new car buyers.

John Healy of Healy Insurances.

There are many types of EVs on the market today from battery electric vehicles (BEVs) to plug-in electric vehicles (PHEVs). A BEV is a vehicle that uses a battery as the sole means of energy storage for the propulsion of the vehicle. A BEV does not have a fossil fuel engine or generator. A plug in hybrid vehicle has both an internal combustion engine and an electric motor. The electric battery can be charged by the combustion engine or via plug in from an electricity source. The battery’s energy is recharged by the engine, wheel motion or by plugging into a charge point. An additional type of plug in hybrid is called a range extender electric vehicle. This type of EV has a small petrol powered generator to recharge the battery

and allow extended range when the battery level is low. There are many benefits if you choose an electric vehicle.

to the battery, instead of wearing out your brake pads. In addition many EV drivers experience less tyre wear.

BETTER FOR THE ENVIRONMENT

Hybrids do not have any issue for overall driving range. However pure battery electric vehicles come with a variety of driving ranges. Typical EV ranges go from 100kms up to 500kms. According to the sustainable energy authority 80% of car journeys in Ireland cover distances of 20km on under. There are grants available of up to €5,000 if you as a private buyer purchase a new BEV or plug in hybrid. There are over 41,000 electric vehicles and plug in hybrids on Irish roads today. From an insurance perspective EVs are quoted by all the major insurance markets.

This is one of the biggest advantages, pure electric vehicles have no tailpipe so they produce less harmful emissions than an internal combustion engine.

LOWER RUNNING COSTS

It is estimated that fuelling an EV can cost 80% less that fuelling a comparable petrol vehicle.

LOWER MAINTENANCE COSTS

Did you know there is less brake pad wear on an electric vehicle because the motor slows the vehicle before friction braking is needed. The energy goes back

New shared home equity scheme launched On the back of the article we published two weeks ago informing of the new First Home Shared Equity scheme, the government announced a further home buying incentive this week. A new €30,000 grant is available to those who purchase a vacant property to live in. At the time of writing, Minister Darragh O Brien is bringing details of the Croi Connaithe scheme to cabinet, which allows for grants of up to €30k to help first time buyers with the cost of renovating existing vacant buildings. The

scheme will be administered through the Local Authorities and is envisaged it will help in the restoration and conversion of many unoccupied buildings in our towns and villages. Additional Funding of €7.5m has also been approved this week by Rural and Community Development minister Heather Humphreys, to redevelop 36 derelict and vacant properties in rural areas into new community hubs. The funding will see former banks, Garda Stations and courthouses taken into public ownership and converted for community use. Both these new schemes are designed to tackle the scourge of dereliction in our rural towns and villages. A further measure, aimed at easing

pressure in the rental market, is the much publicised move to tighten regulatory controls on the short term letting of non-principal private residences in rent pressure zones. The housing minister has said the new controls would result in more homes returning to the long term rental market in areas where rents are highest and where households have the greatest difficulty sourcing affordable accommodation. From September, online platforms will not be able to advertise properties in rent pressure zones that do not have the requisite planning permission in place. Non compliance will be an offence for both the individual property owner concerned and the property website

Male waxing is becoming ever more popular We can do all areas of the face and body. The most popular areas are the back, chest and brows. Although lately, we have been doing a lot of nose and ear waxing. The hair stays away for much longer than shaving and there is no stubble left behind. It is a lot less painful than you imagine. With the sunny days head, plenty of beach time. It's never too late to try out waxing, doesn't matter what age you are, we have seen a wide range of men of all ages over the past few months. A few tips to prepare the skin for waxing sessions. Be sure to exfoliate before waxing, using a scrub once a week on the area to be waxed should help. Scrub a day or two before your appointment, not the same day. What you are doing with this is removing the dead cells that build up on the surface. That way wax removes just the hair, not a layer of dead cells. Let your hair grow (if you have been shaving). For best results we recom-

mend 3-4 weeks since your last hair removal. If your hair is too short that wax can't remove it all. Take time to relax, there is one thing that helps everything and that is a take long hot soak in the bath a couple of hours before your waxing session. The water will also soften the hair, which makes it easier to remove. The warmer the water can soften your skin too. The more relaxed you are the easier it is to wax. When you are tense your muscles are tense and that can hold in the hair. After waxing, stick to the 48-hr rule, especially for your first treatment. You will need to keep the area, clean and dry to avoid anything that could irritate your delicate skin. e.g. sunlight, exfoliating, tight clothes, hot baths, swimming, hot tubs and perfumed body lotions. If the skin feels sensitive or dry, you can apply aloevera-based lotion. For more information or to book an appointment call Jill at 064-6632966

Staff get to keep tips as new law signed by President Tips earned by employees in the hospitality sector will will go directly into their own pockets after the Payment of Wages (Tips & Gratuities) Act 2022, was signed into law by the President, Mr. Michael D. Higgins this week. The move has been welcomed by the Irish Congress of Trade Unions but the union warned there is a lot more to be done. “And as stated at a recent Joint Oireachtas Committee on Tourism and Hospitality, this is only a starting point to make

improvements for workers and ensure the sector provides decent employment,” said Fiona Dunne of the ICTU. “While employers state that it is increasingly difficult to find staff willing to work in hospitality, we have said time and again, that people are willing to work and remain in a sector where there is adequate training, decent pay - well above minimum wage levels - adherence to the range of employment legislation to which they are entitled, career opportunities and progression and dignity and respect in all interactions.”

Q:

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS

Help to Buy Scheme Q: What Is the Help to Buy Scheme? The Help to Buy (HTB) Scheme assists first-time buyers to purchase a newly-built house or apartment. It is also available for once-off self-build homes. It only applies to properties that cost €500,000 or less. The HTB Scheme gives a refund of the income tax and Deposit Interest Retention Tax (DIRT) you have paid in Ireland over the previous 4 tax years. Q: How do I qualify? To qualify, you must: Be a first-time buyer. If you are buying (or self-building) the property with someone else, they must also be a firsttime buyer. Buy or self-build a new residential property between 19 July 2016 and 31 December 2022. Take out a mortgage of at least 70% of the purchase price. Cash buyers do not qualify. Live in the property for 5 years from the date that it is habitable. HTB is not available for investment properties. Be fully tax-compliant for the 4 years immediately before your claim. Q: What do I get? If you sign a contract for a new house, or draw down on a self-build mortgage, between 23 July 2020 and 31 December 2022, you can get an increased relief. This is known as the Enhanced Help to Buy Scheme. You can claim relief on the lesser of: • €30,000 • 10% of purchase price of the property • 10% of the completion value of a self-build • The amount of income tax and DIRT you paid for the previous 4 years • The maximum payment is €30,000.

Q: How can I apply? There are 3 stages to the online application process: The application stage: If you are a PAYE employee only, you can apply for the HTB Scheme through Revenue’s MyAccount service. Or, if you are a self-assessed taxpayer, you can apply through Revenue’s Online Service (ROS). The claim stage: Once your application is approved you can make your claim using ROS or MyAccount. You will need to provide documents about your mortgage and confirm details about the property at this stage. The verification stage: The information you have provided is verified by an eligible verifier. This is the contractor if you are buying a new home, or your solicitor if you are building your home. Q: How do I get the refund? If you buy a new build, the refund is paid directly to the builder. If you selfbuild the property, the refund is paid to a bank account you hold with your loan provider. ________________________________________________ Read more about the Help to Buy Scheme on https://bit.ly/3O2jdxF . Ireland ranked fourth in disabled tourism survey Ireland has ranked fourth is a survey on suitability of each European nation for disabled tourists. Using two filtering tools, UpCounsel scraped data on toilets, cafes, pubs and bars, restaurants, and public transport, with every item on the list classified as accessible. Then UpCounsel added the accessible and non-accessible results together and compared them. Ireland came fourth on the list overall, just beaten out by Italy. “The beautiful countryside, dramatic

coastlines and fascinating history make Ireland a compelling holiday option, and UpCounsel’s research project shows that extends to disabled people too. Ireland scores particularly highly in its amount of accessible public toilets, as well as the quantity of cafes with wheelchair access,” said an UpCounsel spokesperson. “However, it’s not all perfect in the Emerald Isle; accessible public transport is a lowly 11th, which means sightseeing all across the land may prove difficult for disabled travellers.

OPINION WEEKLY SPORT

Our sports editor ADAM MOYNIHAN shares his thoughts on the week's burning issues

An ode to Kerry's heroes As Kerry's All-Ireland bid gathered momentum around the quarter-final stage, a debate cropped up online about the county football team's anthem. The Rose of Tralee is the song most commonly associated with Kerry football and many famous victories in Croke Park have been soundtracked by this heartfelt ballad about a beautiful woman called Mary. Let's be honest, though, (if I can paraphrase Will Ferrell in Blades of Glory) it's not a tune that gets the people going. Among the suggested alternatives over recent weeks We Want The Sam Maguire, a rejigged version of Billy Joel's We Didn't Start The Fire that was composed by The Border Boys for the 2000 All-Ireland final. It's a track I had completely forgotten about but I'm not ashamed to admit that I listened to it frequently over the past month or so. I clearly had a serious dose of All-Ireland fever but it's a brilliant song featuring some excellent lyrics. The opening lines have genuinely been stuck in my head for several weeks: "Declan Keeffe is in the goals he's solid as a rock, At full back we have a man who comes from Shronedraugh..." (‘Rock’ and ‘Shronedraugh’ rhyme perfectly, for those unfamiliar with the Glenflesk townland that produced Séamus Moynihan for us.) I gave the song my seal of approval on Twitter, for whatever that's worth, and my followers seemed to love it too. In

the end, when the final whistle sounded last Sunday, the PA system in Croke Park blasted out another alternative to The Rose of Tralee, An Poc Ar Buile. No complaints here. I was grinning from ear to ear just like every other Kerry person at home and abroad. But I had an even bigger smile on my face the following day at around noon when I was scrolling through Instagram and flicked onto Tony Brosnan's story. He and his teammates were availing of the Luas to make their way to The Boar’s Head on Capel Street, still in good form from the night before, and a couple of modern-day border boys were in full voice. Rathmore pair Shane Ryan and Paul Murphy were leading the chorus as the team belted out We Want The Sam Maguire - with a fair amount of gusto I might add. Paul seemed to know the words better than most which makes sense when you discover that his father, Donal, was an original member of The Border Boys. The group was also comprised of Derry Healy, Rosie Healy and Tim O'Donoghue. Singing that song was a lovely nod from the 2022 champions to the champions of 2000, who also defeated Galway in their decider. Perhaps someone should

have commissioned an updated version for this year’s final (“Shaney Ryan is in the goals he’s solid as a rock”. Or maybe the day of the All-Ireland final song is in the past. Following their heroics this season, few could dispute that the current panel should have songs written in their honour. I wouldn’t be musical myself but words of praise are certainly in order, and I have no problem singing them this week. Shane Ryan fought off stiff competition for the keeper’s jersey and his composure and accuracy from the tee was crucial. Graham O’Sullivan’s rapid transformation from back-up player to influential starter has been remarkable. Jason Foley was undoubtedly one of Kerry’s star players in 2022. Tom O’Sullivan had his hands full with a top-class footballer in the final but he made really important contributions at both ends of the pitch throughout the season. Brian Ó Beaglaoich is, for me, the most underrated played on this team. Tadhg Morley was simply superb. On Sunday Gavin White played one of his best matches of an impressive season, despite barely training in the build-up due to a knee injury. David Moran showed his class against Cork and Mayo. Jack Barry was typically selfless and left his mark on the championship. Diarmuid O’Connor sparkled at

times and his input in the final was really important. Despite playing limited minutes, Joe O’Connor, the captain, had a big moment against Galway that I’m sure meant a lot to him. It meant a lot to the team. Adrian Spillane had a great league and was unfortunate to lose his starting position in the championship. He still made a difference whenever he was called upon. Dara Moynihan sadly missed the final after picking up a late injury but he can reflect on some positive moments over the course of the year. Seán O’Shea’s match-winning point against Dublin will be talked about forevermore but he worked exceptionally hard for the team in every game he played. Paudie Clifford made the All-Ireland champions tick. Stephen O’Brien soldiered hard and made some crucial interventions in the final. Paul Geaney showed his class on numerous occasions. Killian Spillane was huge for Kerry off the bench last weekend. And then there’s David Clifford. No words needed, really. Guys like Paul Murphy, Gavin Crowley, Dan O’Donoghue, Jack Savage, Micheál Burns and Tony Brosnan played their part, as did every member of the 36-strong panel. I know it doesn’t quite rhyme but that’s my ode to the Kerry footballers. Heroes one and all.

Cool Kerry steady the ship to claim All-Ireland title No. 38 Adam Moynihan reports from Croke Park ALL-IRELAND SFC FINAL __________________________________________________

Kerry 0-20 | Galway 0-16 CROKE PARK

A superb David Clifford free from a narrow angle proved to be crucial as Kerry powered to a four-point victory over Galway in last Sunday’s All-Ireland final in Dublin. The teams were level on 0-16 and momentum was with Galway when Clifford swung over the lead score in the 67th minute, and fisted efforts by substitute Killian Spillane and Gavin White soon stretched Kerry’s advantage out to three. Fittingly, the captains combined deep into injury time to seal the deal as Seán O’Shea tapped over a free that had been won by Joe O’Connor. When Seán Hurson blew the final whistle, An Poc ar Buile reverberated around Croke Park and players, management and supporters basked in the glory of All-Ireland title No. 38. O’Shea and O’Connor lifted the Sam Maguire together to officially end the run of seven years in the wilderness, but one of the biggest cheers of the day was reserved for the Clifford brothers, David and Paudie, who also lifted Sam Maguire side-by-side. They said the youngest Clifford needed to win an All-Ireland before earning his place in the discussion around the alltime greats. After his performance on Sunday and the result it inspired, it’s officially time to talk.

GAVIN WHITE

Before the match began Kerry were buoyed by the inclusion in the starting line-up of Gavin White, the all-action wing back who had sustained a knee injury in the semi-final against Dublin. White’s availability may have bolstered Kerry’s status as pre-match favourites but any hopes the green and gold faithful had of an easy win were abruptly blown out of the water. Shane Walsh meant business from the get-go and the Kilkerrin-Clonberne man kicked a fabulous 45 to open the scoring in the 5th minute of play. Galway could have been celebrating an absolute dream of start were it not for a fine block by Stephen O’Brien; the Kerry No. 12 diverted Johnny Heaney’s goal-bound effort over the bar. Kerry star David Clifford got the Munster champions up and running with a well-taken mark in the ninth minute, but Walsh fired back with two points in succession to make it 4-1 to the Tribesmen. Clifford (free) and the silky Walsh (with the point of the half) then brought the scores to 5-2 at the midway point of the period. The Kingdom were errant with their shooting in the first half but they were getting some joy from the high ball, and Paul Geaney gathered one such skyscraper to take his mark and his score. When Clifford kicked a super long-range point in the 18th minute there was just a point between the teams, and the sides were level just moments later when the

lively O’Brien clipped over Kerry’s fifth of the day. The two bona fide superstars on show, Walsh and Clifford, exchanged placed balls (a free and mark), before a high tackle by the latter on Seán Kelly brough the match to a standstill for a couple of minutes. Clifford was booked for the incident and the half rather petered out thereafter. Points by Galway corner back Jack Glynn and midfielder Cillian McDaid, either side of a Seán O’Shea free, left the scores at Galway 0-8 Kerry 0-7 at the interval. At this point, Galway were more than good value for their lead, and Kerry’s All-Ireland hopes were very much up in the air.

TENSE AND TIGHT

Although the second half threatened to burst into life at stages, it remained fairly tense and tight throughout. With Walsh continuing his frankly spectacular form, Galway were still a point to the good in the 40th minute (0-10 to 0-9), despite a couple of neat scores by David Clifford and Diarmuid O’Connor. (O’Connor, who lined out with No. 10 on his back, switched to midfield following half-time when David Moran was replaced by Adrian Spillane.) Paudie Clifford came into the game more in the second period and he equalised in the 41st minute after being set up by the excellent Graham O’Sullivan. Seconds later David Clifford gave Kerry their first lead of the game when he capitalised on a wayward Connor Gleeson kickout by bombing one over from distance. Pádraic Joyce's side weren’t going an-

ywhere, however, and with midfielder Cillian McDaid on fire in front of the posts, they once again led by two points with 47 minutes played. In fairness to Kerry, they kept their cool despite the trying circumstances and a run of four consecutive scores from O’Shea (free), Graham O’Sullivan, David Clifford (free) and Paudie Clifford gave them their biggest lead of the day (0-16 to 0-14). A harsh call on Gavin White for what appeared to be a fair shoulder on Paul Conroy afforded the Connacht champions a shot at the posts, which Walsh duly converted. When McDaid kicked his fourth point, the game was all square and the wind was in Galway’s sails. Clifford’s fantastic free settled the nerves, though, and an impressively energetic yet totally calm display down the stretch won the day.

9.1

Got better and better as the season went on and was faultless in the final. 2

Excellent in defence and in attack. His pinpoint distribution was a joy to behold.

3

Marked Galway star Comer completely out of the game. 4

Got a tough time of it from the imperious Shane Walsh but stuck to his task regardless. 5

Dependable and dogged. Gave it everything.

6

Business as usual. One of Kerry’s players of the year. 7

A remarkable display considering the fact that he hardly trained since the semi-final. 8

Was ill in the lead up to the game and could only last a half. A fourth Celtic Cross will provide consolation. 9

Put in his usual shift. Made important contributions throughout the championship.

10

Came to life in the second half and kicked a nice point.

11

Not his most impactful game offensively but kept grafting to the end. 12

His two blocks in the first half were important. One prevented a possible goal. 13

Brilliant when it mattered most. 14

Kerry’s Man of the Match. Four points in each half. A legendary performance.

15

Was unfortunate to miss a couple of shots early on.

How did the manager, players and pundits react to Kerry’s dramatic victory in the All-Ireland final? Jack O’Connor was uncharacteristically vocal in the dressing room after what was a rocky first half

We learned as a group over the last couple of years that we left games behind us… We mentally got a bit tougher on ourselves inside in the dressing room. We started calling each other out. That’s a big thing for us.

WE DID IT: David Clifford runs to teammate Seán O'Shea at the final whistle as Galway's John Daly and Liam Silke are left heartbroken. Photo: Daire Brennan/Sportsfile.

Eamonn Fitzgerald shares his take on the All-Ireland football final No goals in last Sunday’s All-Ireland football final but points galore. 20 for Kerry and 16 for Galway. I was hoping for at least one goal to ignite this match. It needed it, because it lacked the kind of brilliance one hopes for on the big day. One rarely sees classic final, especially All-Irelands. There is too much at stake. Seán Boylan understood this when the successful Meath manager said: “There are very, very few pretty All-Ireland finals. It’s one step away from the ultimate reward. Rarely will you see a final reported as a ‘wonderful game'.” (By the time you read this Colm O’Rourke may well be installed as the new Meath boss. This pundit will not find the harsh realities of live action easy.) In my book, this All-Ireland was not a wonderful game. The result was wonderful, much appreciated after the two (at least) Kerry gave away at the death. Of course it was worth the trip to Croker to behold the individual brilliance of David Clifford and of Shane Walsh. Use all the superlatives you wish for the sheer class of these two artists. Magical. This final was very much a well-planned

exercise masterminded by Jack O’Connor to get Kerry over the line, to shorten the winter, to bring Sam home and to wrestle the canister from Tyrone. What's more, Kerry beat Dublin’s six-ina-row squad. This game on Sunday last was exciting because of the closeness of the scores until Killian Spillane was fortunate to earn a free. Joyce was furious. Clifford’s free set Kerry on the road to victory and the gallant Galway challenge faded.

GAEILGE

Séamus MacGearailt turned to fellow Gaeltacht neighbour Dara Ó Cinnèide when the open-top bus turned into a packed Ashe Street in Tralee in September 1997. Kerry had endured a famine in the nineties, but now that was over and the thousands of Kerry supporters were savouring every moment of it. Speaking in his native tongue, Séamus captured the essence of it all in a nugget of pure poetry. “I ndheireadh na dála, tá Sam sa mhála.” Daire understood it; others may like the translation. “At long last,

Sam is in the bag.” It was just like the frustrated fisherman after spending countless hours of frustration beside the salmon pool. Then the long play was over as the silver whopper was landed safely on the bank and dispatched into the bag. Fionn Mac Cumhaill first experienced it on the banks of the Boyne, fadò, fadò. Another Fionn lifted the precious silver along with Kieran in 2014. And then it was hunger and frustration as Kerry supporters endured an eight-year famine without the treasured Sam. The wait was over at last when Seánie O’Shea climbed those steps at Croke Park on Sunday afternoon to deliver that long awaited victory cry. “Is mór an onóir dom an corn so a ghlacadh ar son fhoireann Chiarraí.” He looked across at Hill 16 and froze the frame in the picture of just two weeks ago when he did the improbable, if not the impossible, curling the greatest kick of all time over the famed black spot to send Kerry into the All-Ireland final. How far out was he? 60? 70? 75? I have 75, can I get 100? Distances blur, especially

around closing time. What does it matter when Seánie made the impossible possible? For the sake of the parish; for the sanity of the people of Kerry facing another winter of discontent, the new Cúchulainn from Kenmare Shamrocks delivered the goods. It was very special to be close by Seánie, as he lifted the Sam Maguire on Sunday last. They had got over the line at last defeating a spirited Galway side 0-20 to 0-16. It's been a long time coming. Eight years without the Sam Maguire is nothing special for most of the counties in Ireland. For Kerry it’s a famine not quite so horrific as the Great Famine of the 1840s, but hard to endure for proud Kerry supporters and most galling of all having to bend the knee to the Dubs chasing down Kerry's record as the number 1 side. Not just once but to see Dublin win it an unbelievable six years on the trot. That stuck in the craw. Thus far but no further as we celebrated. I never before saw so many babies handed in over the human security barrier in front of the Hogan Stand. It was easy to pick out the next

59

29.07.2022 generation of Moran, Geaney, Crowley and Clifford.

HITHER AND THITHER

Everyone wanted a piece of David Clifford as he was pulled hither and thither, but he didn’t neglect his paternal responsibilities. Young Óigí was patient. “What’s the fuss? He’s my Dad,” said the one-year-old. Eventually, David had to be ushered over to the Hogan sideline to receive the Man of the Match award. But who was going to mind Óigí? Up steps the chairman of the county board. Daddy Clifford knew his son was in safe hands. After all, Patrick O'Sullivan has been a safe pair of hands since he took the office for the second time. He bagged the baby into those safe arms and sang or attempted to sing sweet nothings into his ear. “Come here my man to hear ‘Mary Had a little Lamb’.” Getting over the line was trotted out so often as the reason for all the hype. Jack O’Connor trotted out that and so many other soundbytes lapped up by the assembled media. I met Michael Healy Rae, smiling as ever, delighted to see the man from the Inny Valley excelling in front of camera. Kerry won this All-Ireland because David Clifford showed why he is the best player in the country and the iconic figure of the current GAA era.

He needed to be because Galway had the brilliant Shane Walsh scoring nine points. Clifford could only manage eight but they all counted for victory. What's more, Clifford had better foot soldiers in the Kerry army than Joyce could muster since the Battle of Athenry. Galway gave it their best shot and really put it up to raging hot favourites. Kerry were unbackable at 1/3. They hit the straight after the final bend and kicked for home with the insurance points . As predicted by Séamus Moynihan for this column last week, this was not free-flowing champagne football. Both teams were set up defensively so it was up to marquee forwards to ramp up the winning scores. Enter Walsh and Clifford. Those foot soldiers did the work on the ground and none more so than Stephen O'Brien who put in a great shift before being replaced. He doesn't score much but he did a massive job as an extra defender, tracking back from his wing forward position. He was all the ways back in front of the Kerry goal and made a spectacular diving save early on preventing the goal Galway. That was very decisive in yet another goalless Kerry display. Other great soldiers were Shane Ryan, Graham O'Sullivan, Jack Barry and Diarmuid O'Connor, What of the game itself? There wasn't

an ounce of negativity in the play, not one off the ball and behind the ref’s back misdemeanours that one one associates with northern teams in particular. It was an easy game to referee. Hurson did well, however the Galway keeper should have been given a black card for bringing Killian Spillane down. Also, David did not deserve a yellow card for an innocuous incident. All that apart we salute Jack et al for shortening the winter. Mighty men. AllStars for Jason Foley and the Clifford brothers. Strongly in contention should be Shane Ryan, Gavin White and Tadhg Morley. David Moran, Paul Geaney and possibly Paul Murphy could now retire. They will return to their clubs on the weekend after next to where it all began for them. And that is as it should be.

LADIES

“That was mighty stuff and we are back where we belong and no longer under the coat tails of the Dubs. What's more, I'll be back here again next Sunday. Please God the Kerry ladies will do the double,” said Kathleen from Iveragh as I chatted with her on the Hogan Stand after O’Shea and Joe O’Connor had raised the Sam Maguire. Kathleen is well known as one of the greatest Kerry supporters of the green and gold and I hope she will have many

This final was very much a wellplanned exercise masterminded by Jack O’Connor to get Kerry over the line, to shorten the winter, and to bring Sam home.

more with her on Sunday next. Meath, the reigning champions, are odds-on favourites to retain the title they snatched so dramatically from the Dubs in last year’s final. In many ways Kerry are a big surprise this year. Even though they were beaten by Cork here in the Fitzgerald Stadium in the curtain raiser to the men’s Munster final, I was impressed. Declan Quill and Darragh Long are huge local Tralee rivals, but they deserve huge credit for the revival of the fortunes of ladies football in Kerry. Joint managers, they have steered the team to next Sunday's All-Ireland final. The semi-final display was magnificent, winning by nine points over Mayo. Led by full-back Kayleigh Cronin - the Kerry MVP in that game - they were in scintillating form, bagging four goals. More of the same will be needed on Sunday next as they are meeting a very strong Meath team. No doubt the Dr Crokes full back and the evergreen and marvellous Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh deserve that coveted Celtic Cross. Best of luck to Mná na Ríochta and le cúnamh Dé they will also climb those hallowed steps at around 5.15pm on Sunday. Now let us get behind them because the ladies game will produce goals, goals that were so badly lacking last Sunday.

Kerry ladies hoping to end 29-year famine Reigning champions Meath stand in Kingdom’s way ALL-IRELAND SFC FINAL

____________________________________________________________________

Kerry v Meath Sunday at 4pm Croke Park The Kerry ladies’ quick transition from also rans to All-Ireland contenders has been nothing short of stunning. After they finished bottom of their pool on zero points in the 2021 All-Ireland series, The Kingdom needed to beat Tipperary to avoid a perilous relegation playoff final against Tyrone. They won that game in Mallow comfortably, but still they were far closer to demotion to intermediate than they were to All-Ireland final day. As for the league, losing both of the previous Division 2 finals (2019 and 2021) must have dented their confidence in a major way heading into 2022. Suffice to say that not much was expected of Kerry. At least not outside the camp. Set against that backdrop, the team’s performances this year have been remarkable. They stormed through the league, topping the southern group with three wins out of three, and then turned over tournament favourites Armagh in a rousing final. That match will perhaps be best remembered for Danielle O’Leary’s heroics off the bench but in truth it was a superb team display that got Kerry over the line. The rapturous celebrations that followed the final whistle showed what a release the result was for Declan Quill, Darragh Long and their squad. The monkey was off their backs. They could approach the championship unincumbered. After an easy semi-final win over Tipp in Páirc Uí Rinn, the side’s Munster ambitions came crashing down against Cork in Killarney. The outcome

could, to some extent, have been anticipated; Cork are the undisputed top dogs in Munster and have won 11 All-Irelands since the turn of the century. But it was far from a hammering (five points was the difference) and it was a spirited enough showing to keep the show on the road. Since that day, Kerry have been faultless. Wins over Connacht champions Galway and Westmeath sent them through to the last eight, where a goal of the season contender by Niamh Carmody helped them to another fantastic victory over Armagh. Mayo were no match for the girls in Paul Galvin’s gold jerseys in the semi-final. A Player-of-the-Game performance by Kayleigh Cronin alongside typically dependable outings by the likes of Emma Costello, Cáit Lynch and Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh propelled them to an impressive ninepoint win. And now, here they are, an hour away from what would surely be one of the most unlikely All-Ireland wins in the county’s history. Of course, the defending champions will have something to say about that. Meath shocked Dublin in last year’s decider to claim their first title at this level and they’re looking to make their own bit of history by going back-to-back. Their star player of 2021, Vikki Wall, has transferred to the AFLW but the Royal County still boast several topclass footballers, perhaps most notably the brilliant Emma Duggan who was excellent in the semi-final against Donegal. The fact they have been there and done that makes Meath slight favourites heading into this novel ladies final but don’t be one bit surprised if Kerry turn up and tear up the script. They’ve been doing it all year long. VERDICT: Kerry by one.

Having last won the title in 1993 they will be bidding to end the 29-year famine against the reigning All Ireland champs. SENIOR MEN: Our Senior Men open their County Intermediate Championship bid with a clash against Laune Rangers which is being played in Beaufort on Sunday July 31 at 2.30pm. Laune Rangers had a very solid campaign in Division 2 and have a long and proud tradition as a Championship team of some renown. Nothing less than 100% will suffice in this most competitive environment. Dromid Pearses will face John Mitchels in Glenbeigh in the other game in the group, which will be held in Glenbeigh on Saturday August 6 at 7pm.

Dr Crokes GAA DIV 1 CO LEAGUE FINAL: Dr Crokes 0-17 Dingle 1-18. Our senior team fell short after extra time in the County League Final over Dingle in Tralee on Friday evening. Both sides were evenly matched throughout the game. The game was in our favour as we entered the 57th minute of normal time with two unanswered points from Cillian O’Regan giving us a 0-14 to 0-11 lead. As the clock continued to count down, Dingle fought with everything they had. Brendan

Falvey made a fantastic save with time almost up but Dingle’s Barry O’Sullivan was quickest to the rebound and tapped the ball in to the back of the net sending the game to extra time. Dingle came out even stronger in extra time outscoring us 6 points to 2. U14 CO LEAGUE FINAL: Our U14 girls had a great win in the Co. League Final, where they overcame a very strong John Mitchels team for the second time on a score line of 2-11 to 3-6. Siofra Randles was outstanding kicking some amazing scores while bursting through the midfield. She was ably assisted in point kicking by Sabra Hickey. Our captain Aoife O’Donoghue was tremendous at the back, with Ali Lyne making some great score-saving tackles. A fantastic effort from all the girls on the panel, the improvement throughout the squad has been amazing. Huge congratulations to each one of the girls, and to their fantastic coaches Eoin, Allan, Pia and Liz.

Muckross Rowing Club HOME INTERNATIONAL REGATTA: Congratulations and well done to Ethan O’Neill who represented club and country at the Home International Regatta held in London last Saturday. The Homes event is an annual rowing contest for the four rowing federations of Ireland and Great Britain, with Ethan selected for the Irish junior sculling squad along with Aidan Kearney (St. Michael’s RC, Limerick), David Ross-Chu (Shandon BC, Cork) and Lochlan Crooks (Neptune RC, Dublin). Ethan rowed in three sculling events, placing third in both the Mens Junior Double and Quad events. A revised regatta format saw the Irish quad make the most of their second chance in the 500m sprint event, which saw Ireland dominate to claim gold. Congratulations go to Ethan for not only earning the green

jersey, but also going on to represent Muckross and Ireland proudly with a well deserved gold medal coming home. KENMARE OFFSHORE REGATTA: Closer to home, the club also enjoyed a great day at the Kenmare Offshore Regatta on Saturday last with crews from Junior 14 to Senior and Masters representing MRC. Special thanks to Sean Real and John Beazley for towing the boat trailer.

Kilcummin KILCUMMIN LOOKING GOOD: With the impending arrival of the Tidy Towns Adjudicator expected over the next few weeks, we would ask all householders to make a special effort outside their houses to ensure it is presented at its very best. Please ensure if you are a dog owner that you take on your responsibilities associated with dog fouling on footpaths and park. We have to express our sincere gratitude and compliment artist Martin Carey for the excellent art work on the Snakes and Ladders and the "Failte" lettering within the park; I think all would agree that his artwork on the flower containers in the Village is a wonderful addition and embellishment to the overall look of the village. Don't forget to visit the park which is now in full bloom. Maybe have a game on the life-size snakes and ladders, hoping you get more ladders than snakes! KILCUMMIN COMHALTAS: Best wishes to all our members competing in the All- Ireland Fleadh which will be held in Mullingar July 31-August 7. KILCUMMIN COMMUNITY CARE: Community Care will be closed for holidays on August 2 and 9 and reopening on August 16. New members welcome.
