Are Killarney’s Buskers “Lowering The Tone”?

Words: Adam Moynihan

In a recent article in the Irish Times, Killarney Advertiser columnist Anne Lucey highlighted the ongoing issue of Killarney’s street entertainers and the council’s plans to regulate buskers in the town. Some councillors have complained that members of the public are being insulted and foul language is being used by certain performers, and concerns have also been raised about the quality of some of the music being played on our streets. To my mind the councillors are only talking about a couple of people here, the main alleged culprit being Eric “Scotty” Gudmunsen, aka the Donald Trump guy. The Dundee native wears a Trump wig and sings parody songs about the US president, such as ‘Please Impeach Me’ (to the tune of Engelbert Humperdinck’s ‘Please Release Me’) and a version of Simon and Garfunkel’s ‘The Boxer’ that goes: “I flip and flop, When my lips move it means I’m lying and I just can’t seem to stop, Lie, lie, lie, lie, lie, lie, lie, lie, lie, lie, lie…”

There’s one or two swear words and a bit of innuendo in his lyrics but not a whole pile; nothing you wouldn’t hear on national daytime radio in this day and age. Certain councillors, however, say he’s “lowering the tone” by insulting passers-by. I think he’s gas enough to be honest. I was walking past him on Main Street the other day with a couple of friends, one of whom was wearing shorts. “Oh, you’ve put me off chicken for life,” Gudmunsen said. There was a big crowd there and it got a laugh. My friend got all embarrassed. It was great. All jokes aside, it is a public space so people should have the option of not being insulted if they don’t want to be. It might be fair enough if you pay to go to a show but not everyone is going to appreciate having the piss taken out of them as they go about their daily business. When it comes to quality, I don’t think you couldn’t really question Gudmunsen. His lyrics are sharp and witty and he regularly draws large audiences so he’s obviously doing something right.

There are others who maybe aren’t as talented and busker auditions, which are commonplace in major cities, might be a good idea. You don’t want to be too harsh or rain on anyone’s

Councillors say members of the public are being insulted and foul language is being used parade but if tourists are being put off and locals are being irritated, you have to take that into account. The one major complaint I would have about the street performers in Killarney is the repetitive nature of the material.

The problem here isn’t the material itself per se; you can’t expect buskers to play different songs all the time and they’re naturally going to sing their best ones more often than not. It’s just that Killarney is so small, it’s nearly impossible to not hear them every single time you go to town. That does get a bit annoying, and I’m only passing through. It must get very irritating for the people working in the town centre who have to listen to the same songs day in, day out. According to the outgoing Mayor, the exact same issue was raised 12 months ago so it’s disappointing that this issue is being discussed now at the height of the tourist season. As far as I can tell, the council are talking about the same buskers who were here last year. If there really is a problem then it should have been sorted during the off-season. In the meantime, Killarney’s Donald Trump is unlikely to get impeached any time soon and it seems as though we’ll be hearing his lie, lie, lies for the rest of the summer at least.

What do you think of the standard of busking in Killarney? Does something need to change? Let us know by emailing newsdesk@killarneyadvertiser.ie.

NEWS Business Owners Urged To Row In Behind Tidy Towns Efforts

Gooch & Healy-Raes Back Buy A Bus Campaign Local business owners have been urged to get behind Killarney’s efforts to claim gold in this year’s Tidy Towns competition by maintaining and repainting the front of their buildings. The call comes as we enter the second of three months of judging (June, July and August) and Tidy Towns volunteers say the smallest improvements could be the deciding factor when it comes to totting up scores. The Flesk Restaurant have earned

special praise for repainting the front of their iconic premises in the heart of the town, especially considering the fact that they only recently renovated their classy building. The wonderfully redesigned Laurels Bar at the Market Cross also springs to mind. Killarney is looking fantastic at the moment and we should be grateful to business owners like this who are willing to go the extra mile. If you haven’t yet spruced up your storefront, the good news is there’s still time!

Competitors in this year’s Ring of Kerry have a number of worthy causes to choose from, one of them being the Kerry Parents and Friends’ Buy a Bus Campaign. Recently a number of familiar faces through their considerable weight behind the initiative: Colm Cooper and Danny, Johnny, Michael and Maura Healy-Rae. “Significant cut backs in recent years means we are now much more dependent on fundraising income,” a Kerry Parents and Friends spokesperson said. “Last year, the Ring of Kerry Charity Cy-

cle made it possible for us to put three new buses on the road. This year, we’re relying on your continued generosity and support to help us buy three more.” The Kerry Parents and Friends Association was established in 1973 to support families of people with an intellectual disability. Today, they operate 25 Day Care Centres countywide and provide additional support in the home and community. • The Ring of Kerry Cycle takes place on July 7. The Aghadoe Heights Is ‘China Ready’ The renowned five-star Aghadoe Heights Hotel and Spa in Killarney is the first hotel in Kerry to achieve China Ready accreditation, awarded by the Chinese Outbound Tourism Research Institute (COTRI). This guarantees a very special Kerry welcome to our Chinese visitors and guests. With the introduction of 1,700 airline seats per week, flying directly to Dublin from Beijing and Hong Kong, Irish hotels need to be prepared for a large increase in leisure business from this region. “Understanding our Chinese guests cultural needs is absolutely pivotal to their overall experience of Ireland,” said General Manger, Niall Coffey. Colleagues at the Aghadoe Heights Hotel and Spa completed specialist training modules that covered areas such as Chinese tourist profiles, communication and language, sales and marketing, product and service needs as well as information on the background of Chinese tourists coming to Ireland. A written test forms part of the individual certification process, which allows the team

to enhance their products and services to ensure that they meet the specific needs of the Chinese guest in all areas of hospitality. Dr Tony Lenehan, Executive Director of COTRI in Ireland, attended a small gathering to celebrate this achievement and to personally award each team member with their certificate. Alongside him were IHF Kerry Branch Chairperson, Niamh O’Shea and Marie Healy from Fáilte Ireland. During the presentation, General Manager Niall Coffey thanked his team for their continued efforts to develop the hotel’s standards and offering. “The team at the Aghadoe have worked so hard to achieve this special accreditation. We are proud to become the first hotel in Kerry to be ready to provide a special Irish Welcome to our Chinese guests. “This also coincides perfectly with the EU-China Year of Tourism 2018 initiative, for which we are delighted to offer our support. Recent data released by Fáilte Ireland has shown us how important the

market. The Chinese Tourist Welcome accreditation is the international certified travel service standard and platform recognised by the European Travel Commission and endorsed by the World Tourism and Travel Council.

TOWNTALK Popular Flea Market Returning To New Market Lane Earlier this month, Hazel O’Malley and Ciara O’Connor brought their flea market to New Market Lane in conjunction with the Market Square Committee and to say it was a resounding success would be an understatement. The good news for the people of Killarney is that the Old Market Flea is coming back on Sunday, July 8. In addition to local crafts, food stalls and vintage clothes, the latest instalment of the flea market will include new sellers, organic veggies, homemade sourdough

bread and live music. “The last one went so well we had to bring it back,” a representative from the Market Square committee said. “It’ll be coming back bigger and better and the plan is to have a few more over the course of the summer.” This area has firmly established itself as one of the most thriving corners of the town and there was a really great atmosphere at the last flea market. The next one on July 8 promises to be even better so be sure to get down to New Market Lane to check it out. The event will be running from 10am to 5pm.

Views On The News

Anne Lucey gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry and beyond

Madigan Did Not Deserve Church’s Slapping Down I suppose we can all count our blessings the Culture Minister, Josepha Madigan, did not grab the opportunity to say mass during the royal visit at Killarney House when she had the podium. Calling what she did ‘saying mass’ in her local church in Mount Merrion when the priest never turned up, and she was a reader, was a bit of a stretch, of course. However, the minister does not deserve the slapping down the princes of the Irish church have given her, simply because she had the cheek afterwards to call for women priests and marriage for clergy, especially given the shortage of priests. The reason the clearly spiritual minister (and I noted how she donned a blinding saffron-coloured Hare Krishna type robe in Killarney House) might have been inspired to

launch into the Nicene Creed in Killarney was the example of the Prince before her. Here was someone whose mother, clearly a woman, was the Head of the Church in England! It is the same creed. Should Charles be king, he will be Head of his Church. And the world will not have stopped rotating because there is gender rotation. England’s civilized arrangement is a far cry from the bitter dressing down by Archbishop Diarmuid Martin for even suggesting a woman could be a mere minister of the Catholic Church here. It is all very unseemly. The Minister herself gave a little slap to that other woman who is vocal on church affairs at the moment. “I am going to speak out while I am in power,” said Minister Madigan, clearly referring to former president Mary McAleese.

The Women Are Taking Over Meanwhile, Kerry now has three female mayors: Mayor of Kerry, Norma Foley, Mayor of Listowel, Aoife Thornton and Mayor of South & West Kerry Norma Moriarty. And, as Johnny Healy-Rae put it when offering his congratulations, “the women are taking over here altogether today!” And that is no harm!” he added quickly. Lest of course he get into the kind of trouble John Sheahan, the new Mayor of Killarney, outgoing Mayor of Kerry (hard to keep up with all the chair swapping in this Fianna Fáil/Fine Gael arrangement which is more than a bit like he stepped out and she stepped in again) found himself in a short while ago. Now, I think it is a fantastic thing for Kerry which still has so few female public representatives, that it has women in most of the high offices. But I have a quibble. I dared to ask a senior official, a woman herself, for the age of the new Mayor of Kerry for the purpos-

Boardwalk The fine weather is “phenomenal”. We already have talk of water shortages. Can you believe that only a short few weeks ago we were hardly able to walk on the sodden ground of the paths at the New Entrance without squelching? Why is it, you might ask, in a country coming down with state bodies and state authorities and semistate agencies, we cannot plan? Every weather event, on this island buffeted by the wild Atlantic, is treated as “extreme”. All we do is react, it seems to me. And with the crowds at Dundag and other locations it has stirred memories of other fine summers. In particular, I thought of the call for a boardwalk and a proper beach for Dundag almost three decades ago by the then urban council and by the late TD John O’Leary. The late John looked for sand as well as bins and showers and facilities for the hundreds of bathers using the Muckross Lake beach. A boardwalk was suggested at council level so people could walk onto the water without cutting their toes on the sharp stones. It was a great idea, but was slapped down because of the extra work it would take emptying the bins, as far as I remember. There was some murmuring

es of reporting, and to say I was rounded on was an understatement. “You never ask a woman her age! You don’t do it for men!” I was told. “But I do,” I piped up! There was a consultation with Mayor Foley, and a remark made which I didn’t catch. Anyway, not to sound sexist, there was right “sulking” all around. And I was made to feel I had extreme bad manners in even asking what I would not have thought twice of asking a man! In the meantime, huffing and sulking and consultation over, I never got the age! Well, if women want equality, and want their places on merit, then I think they can’t have it both ways in the real world. In the past, women didn’t give away their age because past a certain age they would no longer be in the market, as it were. Women now are more than their marketability. You do ask a woman her age in this new era! about the wisdom of bringing in extra sand and the environmental consequences. Is it time to resurrect it? I think so. We have boardwalks on Torc and other areas of the park. We can have them at Dundag. We should have toilet and other facilities too.At the very least we should lay the foundations, so that in two decades time, with pressure on the beach, someone who looks back does not say once again, “that was a good idea”. Objections on environmental grounds should not even be entertained this time. Noisy boats with diesel powered engines are allowed on that and the other otherwise tranquil lakes these days; the area outside is a hive of jaunting car activity, cars are more and more frequent in the park, even on the Dinis Road and up and down to the Muckross Rowing Club; buses go through the park to the traditional farms; acres of prime national park land is given over to surface car parking. So if people can operate commercially, and use cars through the park for rowing and other leisure facilities, can there be any reasonable objection to proper facilities in one isolated area for bathing? Hopefully someone puts his - or, who knows, even “her” - toe in the water on this as a project and shakes a bit of holy water on it!

President McAleese had 14 comfortable years in the Áras when she disturbed neither Church nor State and so much did she not cause a ripple she gave recycled speeches. If I heard about the Chinese man going to the well once, I heard it a dozen times, including twice in Killarney on separate occasions years apart. But some of Mary McAleese’s statements have become more and more strident and more and more confrontational, and downright contradictory. Her latest attack on infant baptism is a very one-sided reading of the meaning of baptism. Here she is looking at what is a rite of passage, older than Christianity, as “a contract”. Her main problem seems to be that infant baptism is a breach of “human rights”. Baptism is, of course, much more than a contract, and it is entirely, and I would suggest deeply, human. It is a blessing for a vulnerable child, a way of warding off the evil eye, as old as humanity. Ms McAleese’s too legalistic view and rising anger would make you wonder: is this really all about Mary?

While Nero Fiddled…

Speaking of politics, what is that saying? “While Nero fiddled, Rome burned”? Fianna Fáil are rowing at the moment over the completely powerless, meaningless and unpaid position of deputy chair of the South & West with a missive having been sent by Cllr Michael O’Shea to Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin, as well as to chief whip Michael Moynihan, calling for a censure of his colleague Michael Cahill. Basically, Cllr Cahill backed the independent Dan McCarthy over Cllr O’Shea for the ceremonial position. Cllr Cahill has explained it saying he was acting out of a sense of fairness and since he was not in the party at the last local elections (he rejoined since) he was not bound by the Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil pact. Now Fianna Fáil HQ has been told that for his treachery in supporting an independent over a party colleague, Michael Cahill should not be entertained as a candidate for the party in the next general election. Cllr O’Shea is also saying Cllr Cahill should never have been allowed back into Fianna Fail in 2016 as it was Cahill’s support for Tom Fleming which deprived John O’Donoghue and Fianna Fáil of a seat in 2011. Now a royal row is brewing. Cahill in many quarters would look like someone who might rattle the Healy-Raes for a chance at a second seat. Outgoing Mayor of Killarney Niall Kelleher fancies himself, as does his growing support base in Killarney, after a successful year. However, and not for the first time, while Fianna Fáil fiddle, another scenario is developing. To me if there is to be a party notch up, Fine Gael is the party most likely to snatch that second seat. Minister for Tourism Brendan Griffin is playing a blinder - outside of Killarney. And this is my gripe with him: he does not give this town enough attention. However, he is very well got in north and west Kerry and is certain to increase his vote. Enter the Gooch as a second candidate for Fine Gael? I got a wrinkle that Killarney’s own Gooch is not just being courted but may be amenable to approaches from Fine Gael. Now, if that were to be the case, it is a dream ticket for the blue shirts. And unless Fianna Fáil can come up with someone of the same calibre, and notability, I think they risk losing even their one seat before the Healy-Raes lose one of theirs. It would not be the first time someone in Kerry stole a march on Fianna Fáil.

Letter A Eagarthóir, Congratulations on your article (June 22, 2018) titled: Direct Provision is Harmful and Unfair. It is indeed timely that your article should appear particularly as there is so much worldwide anger at the treatment of children at the Mexican/ American border. If we are willing to condemn the latter then we must most assuredly do likewise with Ireland’s treatment of refugees and asylum seekers. Some months ago, at a meeting of Kerry County Council, I proposed a Motion asking that nobody should have to endure longer than 6 months in Direct Provision. This Motion was agreed by Council and forwarded to Government for its consideration. There has not as yet been a response. It is wrong that adult asylum seekers are expected to live in very inadequate conditions with a pitiful allowance of €21.60 per week. And these people are effectively being denied an opportunity to get gainful employment, as the €30,000 minimum salary condition is unrealistic and unattainable for the vast majority of them. As Ireland prepares to celebrate The Family, it is most certainly time to give concrete expression to the ideal of human respect and dignity. Le Gach Dea-Ghuí, Cllr Michael Gleeson

Prosper Kerry, a networking series for Kerry business diaspora, and the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle have announced a special event of networking amongst Kerry based entrepreneurs and those attending the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle weekend. The event, which takes place in the Killarney Plaza Hotel on Friday, July 6 at 6.30pm, follows successful events ran by Prosper Kerry in Dublin. Prosper Kerry is the brainchild of Derryquay native Eamonn Sayers, manager of the global award-winning Guinness Enterprise Centre (GEC). In his role leading the world’s top business incubator, Eamonn has seen many early-stage companies grow nationally and internationally since he took over the helm of the GEC in 2011. Supported by a group of Kerry professionals based in Dublin, the mission for Prosper Kerry is to develop a network of support among Kerry’s business diaspora to enhance prosperity in Kerry through co-operation, knowledge-sharing, creativity, inspiration and a stronger entrepreneurial ecosystem. Speaking ahead of the event, Sayers said: “We’re calling on all those attending the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle, and indeed anyone from Kerry with an interest in business to come to our event on July 6. We’ll hear from Kerry start-ups developing jobs in the county; we’ll hear from Kerry SciTech as well as the work of Kerry County Council CEO Moira Murrell. “We’ll be joined by Ed Harty, CEO of Dairymaster, a company that was founded in Kerry and is now a world leader in dairy equipment manufacturing. Dairymaster has customers in over 40 countries worldwide and employs 350 people at its global headquarters in Causeway. We’ll also hear from Tony Daly, Chairman of Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle and managing director of Parknasilla, along with some

leading personalities participating in the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle. “At our first two events, we have introduced Kerry start-ups (Crua Outdoors, The Freebird Club, StoryStock, GoYeti!, Southern Scientific and mibeau Interiors) to showcase their businesses to the Kerry diaspora eager to assist them in their growth. We have heard from Kerry entrepreneur Jerry Kennelly who shared the hardearned lessons of growing global businesses from Kerry; and Killorglin exile Luke Moriarty who employs 650+ people in the retail & hospitality industry in Dublin. “Our ask is simple, we want Kerry people that want to see their county prosper to come along and find out how they can help. We believe that we’re missing a trick by not having better business relationships between those of us living and working in the county, and those of us who are outside Kerry but will always call Kerry home. Our diaspora can provide a wealth of advice and mentoring on tackling key start-up challenges including access to markets, growing the business and connecting the entrepreneur with potential investors. We’re a passionate group of Kerry people who want to do as much as we can for our county.” You can register for Prosper Kerry online at gec.ie/prosperseries.

In the course of a talk to the pupils, Dr Mee traced the success of the project, which began 10 years ago. More than 100 eaglets have been brought from Norway and 10 pairs are breeding at present. Dr Mee fielded several questions from the pupils who showed a keen interest in the subject at hand. Dream Spanish Wedding For Nicole & Anthony

Congratulations to Nicole and Anthony O’Sullivan who were married recently at a beautiful outdoor wedding in Nerja, Spain. The amazing Mediterranean beach and scenery in Marinas de Nerja made for the perfect setting and the happy couple were joined on the day by family and close friends. Nicole and Anthony first met nearly five years ago when they were introduced by Nicole’s best friend, Danielle, who met Anthony one night through mutual friends. She called Nicole the next day to say she had found the perfect guy for her. Eventually, Nicole agreed to meet him and look where they are now. Danielle was right; it was love at first sight. They have three sons, Luke, Taylor and Kyle. Nicole is the daughter of Carmel Lanigan from Killarney and Anthony is the son of Geraldine and Jerry O’Sullivan from Millstreet. The Maid of Honour was Nicole’s sister Yvonne and the bridesmaids were Danielle Looney, Orlaith Sheehan and cousin Niamh Lanigan. Devan, Anthony’s brother, was the Best Man and the groomsmen were Pádraig Healy, Kieran Healy and John Healy. Anthony proposed down by the boathouse at Ross Castle in December 2016. He had always said that the best memories of his life were down in Ross Castle and he wanted to keep the rest of the best moments down there also. They now spend time there with their sons, whom they take fishing on the lake. Singer Dan O’Keeffe from Knocknagree travelled to Spain to sing for the couple on the big day. Extremely talented photographer Dylan Clifford did a great job of capturing the couple’s special moments. Nicole and Anthony are very grateful to everyone who made the effort to travel abroad to join them on their special day.

A Weekly Round-Up Of News + Views From Kerry And Around

China To Cap Senegal Become First Ever Team To Go Out On Yellow Cards Movie Stars Pay Colombia’s Yerry Mina thumped home a second-half header to secure a dramatic 1-0 victory over Senegal that catapulted the South Americans into the World Cup last 16 and dumped their African opponents out of tournament. Senegal had only needed a point in their final Group H game to reach the next round, but defeat saw them miss out to Japan, who edged them out of the runners-up spot by virtue of having a better disciplinary record. It was the first time in World Cup history that two teams had been separated by the amount of yellow cards they had accrued in the tournament. Both Senegal and Japan, who were beaten 1-0 by Poland on Thursday, finished the group with four points and an identical record in all other

respects. Yet the Asian side ended in second position having picked up four yellow cards to Senegal’s six. Colombia, who finished as group winners with six points will face a last-16 match against the runners-up in Group G where England and Belgium battle for supremacy later on Thursday. Defeat for Senegal eliminated them at the group stage in their first World Cup appearance since 2002, and left Africa without a representative in the knockout stages. Senegal had been heading through until the 74th minute when Mina rose to meet a corner and sent a bullet header into the net. It was a crushing blow to the Senegalese who had been the better side for most of the game and had a penalty award overturned in the first half after a VAR review.

Trump Corner

Trump And Putin To Meet In Helsinki

Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin will hold their first official summit in Helsinki on July 16, the Kremlin and the White House have announced, scheduling an encounter that is certain to generate fresh controversy for the White House. The optics of the meeting are likely to be as important to the leaders as its results. Moscow is keen to show it is not isolated on the world stage, while Trump has ignored criticism at home to plot a course towards closer relations with Putin. “I’ve said it from day one, getting along with Russia and with China and with everybody is a very good thing,” Trump said, adding that Syria, Ukraine and “many other subjects”

Never fails to entertain

would be discussed at the summit. “It’s good for the world, it’s good for us, it’s good for everybody.” Ahead of the announcement yesterday, Trump sent out an early-morning tweet once more calling into question the conclusion of the US intelligence agencies that Russia was involved in the hacking of Democratic National Committee emails during the election. Arms control and other security issues are likely to be among the main topics of discussion, although both sides have already played down the potential for the meeting to deliver concrete results. The format reflects Trump’s recent preference for high-profile summits, such as the one he held in Singapore this month with the North Korean leader, Kim Jong-un.

China’s authorities say they are capping the pay of actors as part of a move to crack down on tax evasion and “money worship” in the industry. Actors in Chinese films and TV programmes will have their pay capped at 40% of total production costs. Meanwhile, lead actors cannot be paid more than 70% of total cast pay, the government says. It comes after a debate on celebrity pay, and allegations of tax evasion in the film industry. The official announcement comes from a joint statement from five government agencies, including the propaganda department, ministry of culture and tourism, and radio, TV and film regulators late on Wednesday. It does not specify why the government is cracking down on celebrity pay now but says it is needed to deal with “skyhigh pay” for actors, “yin and yang contracts” and “tax evasion and other issues”.

These problems have “damaged the health of the film and TV industry”, and led to “money worship”, “the youth blindly chasing celebrities” and “distorted social values”, the notice added, without giving details about how the pay cap would be enforced. China’s box-office revenue has been rising with revenues of €7.4bn in 2017 The move is probably linked to a controversy over celebrity tax evasion that began last month. In May, TV presenter Cui Yongyuan posted what he said was a contract that Fan Bingbing - one of China’s most famous actresses - had signed, worth €1.4m. He followed this up with a second social media post that alleged that many celebrities signed two contracts - known as “yin and yang contracts” - and only reported the lower-value contract to the authorities, as a way to evade taxes. Many social media users assumed he was referring to Fan Bingbing.

Rogue Stork Costs Polish Charity €2k In Phone Bills

A Polish charity has received a huge phone bill after it lost a GPS tracker that it had placed on the back of a stork. According to official broadcaster Radio Poland, the environmental EcoLogic Group placed a tracker on the back of a white stork last year to track the bird’s migratory habits. It travelled some 3,700 miles and was traced to the Blue Nile Valley in eastern Sudan before the charity lost contact. EcoLogic told the Super Express newspaper that somebody found the tracker in Sudan, removed the SIM card and put it in their own phone,

where they then racked up 20 hours’ worth of phone calls. Radio Poland says that the organisation has received a phone bill of over 10,000 Polish zloty (€2,290), which it will have to pay. Stork-tagging plays an important role in environmentalists’ research and conservation of migratory birds, and data from micro-GPS trackers can be used to help scientists assess birds’ habits, social behaviour and threats. Although the white stork is not currently at risk, industrialisation and the draining of wetlands pushed the species towards near-extinction in Europe some fifty years ago.

TV3 To Change Name To Virgin Media One

Virgin Media has announced plans to launch a new dedicated sports channel that will be free for all digital subscribers. Today, the media firm TV3 Group rebranded to Virgin Media Television. That means that channels TV3, 3e and be3 will be renamed as Virgin Media One, Virgin Media Two and Virgin Media Three. As part of the announcement, the television brand has also revealed it will launch a new channel – Virgin Media Sport – that will be available to Virgin Media customers and air its range of sports content. In recent years, TV3 Group has undertaken a major push into the sports content sector and acquired the rights for a number of high-profile tournaments and competitions. Three years ago, the broadcaster secured the rights to air the Six Nations from 2018 to 2021, which ended RTÉ’s long association with the rugby tournament. Earlier this year, Virgin Media also bagged a four-year agreement with European Professional Club Rugby

to broadcast live Champions Cup games from next season. Last month, it also signed a new rights deal for UEFA Champions League and Europa League matches from next season, which included 327 exclusive matches and the finals of both competitions. The new deal means the Dublin-based broadcaster has exclusive Irish rights to all Wednesday Champions League matches and all Thursday Europa League ties. However, it will share the rights to 16 Tuesday night Champions League matches with RTÉ. There could be further opportunity for the new Virgin Media Television group to add more sports rights to its new channel after Setanta Sports co-founder Mickey O’Rourke secured a deal to broadcast 53 live English Premier League games in Ireland from August 2019. It is understood O’Rourke still has no platform to air the Premier League matches he acquired in the Republic, the majority of which are Saturday afternoon kick offs.

Charlottesville Suspect Charged With Hate Crime An Ohio man accused of driving his car into a crowd of protesters in Virginia last year and killing a woman has been charged with federal hate crimes. James Alex Fields Jr is already facing charges of murder and other crimes at the state level in Virginia. He has been held in jail without bail. Prosecutors say he deliberately drove into a group of peo-

ple who gathered to protest a white nationalist rally. Graphic video of the incident was widely shared on social media. Heather Heyer, 32, who was demonstrating against the August 12 event, was struck and killed and dozens of others were injured. Mr Fields, 21, was charged on Wednesday with 29 counts of hate crime acts, including causing injury and involving an attempt to kill.

Ireland Records Hottest Temperature In 42 Years

Ireland has recorded its hottest temperature in 42 years. Met Éireann says the mercury has reached 32 degrees Celsius at Shannon Airport on Thursday afternoon. It has not been that hot here since 1976. Around 100 water supply schemes across the country were at risk yesterday. Irish Water says it’s lowering night time pressure in the greater Dublin area to its lowest possible level as demand in Dublin is exceeding supply. The utility says as well as relying on its reserves it is also looking at reconfiguring the supply in some areas to try to avoid outages. Kate Gannon from Irish Water says there are also ways the public can help. “Just stop using water outside the home, stop hos-

ing plants, avoid paddling pools where you can, don’t wash your cars,” she said. “We’re asking people to look at any area they can conserve water in their home, in their business and in their communities. We have lots of tips on water.ie. If you see a running leak, call us on 1850 278 278. Please remember that everything you do has an impact on you and your community.” Meanwhile, people are being urged to stay away from forest and gorse fires. Dublin Fire Brigade has dealt with around 200 fires so far and says conditions can change quickly and people can become stuck. This led to the rescue of one family in the Dublin mountains yesterday.

TD Mattie McGrath Calls For End To Illegal Immigration Independent TD Mattie McGrath has called for an end to illegal immigration to Ireland. Mr McGrath says almost 14,000 people have tried to illegally enter the country since 2014. The Foreign Affairs Minister Simon Coveney says he is proud of the fact Ireland doesn’t think about immigrants the same way other countries do. But TD Mattie McGrath wants action. “These people are roaming around and all they have to do while they’re here is sign on at a local garda station,” he said. “The garda stations aren’t there and the gardaí aren’t in them, this is farcical. “14,000 people have attempted to come in illegally, and we’re here then talking about what’s happening in America and else-

where, we should mind our own shores, and protect our own people and our own families and have this dealt with immediately,” he said.

Netflix - Grace Jones: Bloodlight and Bami

Review: Kanye West - Ye Mental health is the great theme of ye, and it’s raw, bracing stuff; ye is West’s most personal record since at least 808’s & Heartbreak, maybe even Late Registration. On standout “Yikes”, West says, “That’s my bipolar shit!/ That’s my super power!/ Ain’t no disability!/ I’m a super hero!” But the one moment that encapsulates the record comes on “Wouldn’t Leave”. Kanye revisits his controversial TMZ interview and his statement that slavery was a choice. He describes the call he

gets from his wife afterward, frightened they’re going to lose everything because of what he said. Even as this is happening, he marvels at how many blogs are writing about him. It’s a dizzying view inside the life of someone who courts controversy — the feeling of vertigo, the wondering if this is the time you can’t pull it off. The verse ends with a gesture of gratitude to his wife and the knowledge that while it may not be easy to be Mr. West, being Mrs. West must be equally exhausting.

Mixing with the likes of Andy Warhol, releasing hit singles such as ‘Pull Up to the Bumper’, and appearing as a Bond villain in A View to a Kill; Grace Jones has become a cultural icon. She is a towering presence who has challenged traditional notions of both femininity and masculinity which has benefitted her shapeshifting image in the process. She’s a model, an actor, a musician; but what do we really know about this modern icon’s private life away from the flashbulbs, the stage, or the big screen? With Grace Jones: Bloodlight and Bami, director Sophie Fiennes follows Grace Jones over a period of ten years, offering entry points into her family life, the recording studio, and some offstage drama. We see Grace in her native Jamaica with her family at church or recording some vocals in the studio, and these fly-on-the-wall segments interweave with live performances of songs which were recorded at Dublin’s Olympia Theatre in September 2016.

Welcome

I

t looks like this Mediterranean heatwave is here to stay for another while. It feels like a different country with a real holiday atmosphere in town and it’s so wonderful to not have to think about jackets and coats for a little while. I’ve finally recovered my garden from the weeds that were invading. They were a formidable enemy and I lost a rug in the battle as a path to the kettle was worn. So now I can sit back and enjoy the garden for a few weeks anyway, until the weeds make a counter attack! Our house this month is a beautifully presented home in Elm Court on the market with DNG Ted Healy Killarney. We are loving the sun room at the rear of the property, perfect for relaxing on those cooler evenings. We are looking at children's bedrooms and nurseries this month which are my favourite rooms to design. It’s great fun and the colours can be louder here than you would normally use in your home. Next month in Home and Living we take a look at hallways, entranceways and boot rooms.

The brief was to design bedroom schemes for the two boys in the family. Each one of them wanted their own space which would reflect their age, character and also allow them to fit in all their toys. The key was that it had to look and feel like a fun room to be in. I just love to create an interior design schemes for kids.

KID'S ROOM

INSPIRATION

Murals The murals were a special order and both kids picked their favourite theme. The digital wallpaper adds visual drama which help to make the space interesting to the eye. It is a place where you could lose yourself in endless play with all the gadgets, Lego and other toys that are there.

Wall design- Colour blocking In order to make a difference in between the two rooms. I also sketched a wall design for one of them and the painter was able to deliver that onto the wall. It lifts up the stone grey carpet and gives a sense of individuality to the room.

Storage There are good storage solutions in both bedrooms, the built-in wardrobes blend in with the wall colour. This helps to open up the space. Also there is a little study area that is completely separate to the play section in order to focus the mind. I am delighted to be sharing these project photos with you and I hope that you will have fun creating a playful scheme for the kids’ bedroom. •

Change Your Boy’s Room To A Teenage Dream

K

IDS grow up so fast – in the blink of an eye they go from watching cartoons to making their own to upload to YouTube! Changing up your little boy’s room to a teenage dream can be a difficult time. Saying goodbye to all the toys you so lovingly bought can be a big change for you if not your tween. Here are some tips to help the transition. Keep it simple, especially if your space is tight modern furniture with clean lines gives a sense of space. A desk is a good idea especially if they use the room to study. If you have the space, a chair for reading (or

throwing clothes on!) is a must or go for a beanbag – great for chilling out. Hal Lou has an amazing Elephant Beanbag, which has a mattress inside and doubles up as a bed; great if they have friends over. Chose a neutral colour for your walls. Grey is still the neutral of choice for the foreseeable future and matches almost every colour. You can add an accent colour on cushions, or a chair, rug or print. Including your budding teenager in the design is a must – try and steer them away from the black walls though! But a large poster of their favorite band can make the space feel more like their own.

Storage The toys are gone but if there are a few that they (or you) don’t want to part with like cars or a Lego creation, put them on display on a bookshelf or funky metal cabinet with some glass doors (saves on dusting).

A Glamorous Girl’s Room

M

SOMETHING A BIT EXTRA

ost of these tips are relevant for your teenage girl’s room – the accent colours may change but the basics are mostly the same. Maybe a dressing table could be included for all that makeup!

Of course, a castle for a princess. A glamorous little girl room can have a romantic style with the Audrey chair by Koket. Add a classy touch with this mirror with a TV inside, Circu’s Magical Mirror. Images by Circu.

Conor Myles and Dan O’Connor,

Partners of Terence F. Casey & Company Solicitors, 99 College Street, Killarney, present information on legal issues

LIABILITY FOR ANIMALS The general legal position relating to liability where injuries or loss caused or occasioned by animals is that the doctrine of strict liability applies. This provides that the owner of the animal in question is in general, liable for the result of any actions or events occurring due to their animals. In effect, this provides that the owner of the animals would find it difficult to have a defence to any claim made against him by an effective person. Losses that occur can include nuisance caused to neighbouring landowners or properties where animals break out and into their property. The law requires the landowners to take all steps necessary to ensure that their animals do not cause any nuisance or damage to their neighbours. Liability for one’s dogs is treated slightly differently in that there is specific legislative provisions in place dealing with this matter. A regular occurrence for animal owners is whereby cattle stray onto the public roadway. Here the owner will be liable for damage caused save and except in circumstances where

the animals are being driven on the public road and all necessary steps have been taken by the animal’s owner and negligence would have to be proven for any damages to be recouped. The position regarding wild animals, and in particular deer, is a matter for much public debate certainly in the Killarney area. The law as it stands seems to provide an immunity to the state for any losses incurred due to deer straying onto the public road. This is due to the fact that deer seem to be wild animals and no third party can be held responsible or liable for their actions. Legislative change or a decision from the higher Courts would be required in a particular case to change the current standing. The above is a discussion piece only and does not purport to be legal advice and should not be relied upon as such. In respect of any specific circumstances, you should consult your solicitor to obtain specific legal advice and Terence F. Casey & Company do not accept any responsibility for any errors or omissions herein.

As an aside, we would like to wish the Fossa Under 14 Ladies Football Team all the best in the Féile All Irelands this weekend.

It’s Fantastic Weather… Garden Magic For Blight And Mildew Words: Debby Looney

Is it boring to start with a comment on the weather? Maybe, but hasn’t it been great?! Everyone is in a good mood, we’re getting jobs done like painting the house and fence, we can go to the beach etc. etc… However, it is also fantastic weather for blight, powdery mildew, blackspot, wilt, and the list goes on! So what does the gardener need to do in this weather? Well, watering is an obvious job but, as with everything, there is a right way and a wrong way! All watering should preferably be done in the morning. The reasons for this are twofold: first of all, the plants get a chance to take up the water before the heat of the day and secondly, the water can permeate to the roots before evaporating. There are those who say that water on the leaves will scorch them but here the water

will have evaporated before it gets a chance to focus the sunlight and cause scorching. Alternatively, if schedules don’t allow for morning watering, the evening is okay too. The problem with evening watering is that often leaves don’t get a chance to dry out and this leads to mildew and other fungi taking hold. Another thing to think about when it comes to watering is the amount. It may sound obvious but giving enough is crucial. Many people believe they are watering when in fact all that is happening is misting, or run-off. To be technical, peat-based compost is hydrophobic, meaning it repels water. This is why ‘wetting agents’ are added to compost. Sand and topsoil mixed into compost have the same effect in that they absorb water more easily.

It takes a surprising amount of time and water before baskets and pots are saturated – the best way to water baskets is often to sit them in a bucket of water ‘til they are wet through. Watering newly planted trees and shrubs is also very important as their roots have not yet broken into the existing soil around them. The easiest way to ensure you give them enough is by using a bucket per plant. Lawns also suffer in these dry times. Make sure you water for long enough that the water filters down at least ten centimetres, and also that you don’t cut the grass as short as you normally might. Raise the blade by a notch. Potatoes are at risk of getting blight so spray with a copper mixture to prevent this. If you have blight, cut the foliage back and burn it, or spray with

something like Bayer Blight Control. Your spuds will no longer be organic, though. Roses are susceptible to blackspot and mildew during times of warm, humid weather, and the only answer to this is make sure your plants are strong and healthy. Give them plenty of feeding, preferably manure, and make sure they are not stressed. If they do get diseased, RoseClear or Fungus Clear are really the only solution. In glasshouses and polytunnels, make sure there is plenty of ventilation. This will cut down on humidity and keep fungus at bay. Above all, make sure in this fine weather that you take the time to appreciate the fruits of your labour!

Lewis Hamilton Regains The Title Lead DRIVER STA NDINGS

1. Lewis Ham ilton (Mercedes) 145 2. Sebastia n Vettel (Ferrari) 13 1 (-14) 3. Daniel Ri cciardo (Red Bull) 96 (-49) 4. Valtteri Bottas (Mer cedes) 92 (5. Kimi Raik 53) konen (Fer rari) 83 (-62 )

FUN FACT Lewis Hamilton has made his singing debut on a sultry Christina Aguilera song under the pseudonym XNDA.

Lewis Hamilton regained the lead in the Formula One drivers’ standings from Sebastian Vettel by cruising to victory at the French Grand Prix last Sunday. Mercedes driver Hamilton was leapfrogged by Vettel last time out in Montreal, but he opened a 14-point advantage at the summit by converting his 75th pole position into a win at the first F1 race in France since 2008. The reigning champion saw his chances of suc-

ceeding at Circuit Paul Ricard boosted by a first-turn collision between Vettel and Valtteri Bottas for which the Vettel received a five-second time penalty. Max Verstappen benefitted from the German and Bottas having to pit twice as he claimed second, but Red Bull teammate Daniel Ricciardo was pipped to third by Kimi Raikkonen. Forecasts of rain never materialised in Le Castellet, but a couple of collisions on a dramatic first lap led

Record Breaker

VW’s Electric ‘Rocket’

to the safety car being deployed. Vettel received a set of soft tyres, Bottas going onto the same compound after ending up with a puncture, but he was unable to make them last to the end of the race and could only finish fifth. It meant there was minimal pressure on Hamilton for much of the race, as he comfortably kept the Red Bulls at arm’s length to clinch his third win of the season on the back of a disappointing outing in Canada.

Tesla

Smashes Pikes Peak Record

Tesla Pick-Up: Volkswagen has conquered the world’s most famous hill climb with its electric ‘rocket’, obliterating the five-year-old record at Pikes Peak in America. Frenchman Romain Dumas raced VW’s lightweight, streamlined ID R up through 156 corners over 19.99km in 7 minutes 57.148 seconds. Not only was that the fastest time ever clocked by an electric car

in the ‘Race to the Clouds’ but it cut 16 seconds off Dumas’ countryman and nine-time world rally champion Sebastien Loeb’s previous record time in the Peugeot 208 T16 in 2013. The 500kW (680hp) ID R, weighing less than 1100kg, has two electric engines driving the front and rear axles. The Pikes Peak course climbs almost 1,440 metres to the peak in the rarefied air at 4,302 metres.

Elon Musk Reveals More Details Tesla chief executive Elon Musk has offered more details on the electric carmaker’s upcoming utility. While asking Twitter followers what they would like to see in an all-electric pick-up this week, Musk said the Tesla offering would come standard with the firm’s dual motor all-wheel drive powertrain, one that would offer “crazy torque”.

The new Tesla pickup could redefine the pickup segment for not only size but performance, especially if it comes equipped with the Semi’s powerful electric motors which can launch it from standstill to 60mph (97km/h) in just five seconds. If fitted with the same huge battery pack, the Tesla pickup could offer a range between battery recharges of up to 800km.

Celtic Do The Double With Cup Win Over Blues Greyhound Bar KO Cup Final Words: Adam Moynihan

Killarney Celtic 1-0 Killarney Athletic McCarthy ‘80

Killarney Celtic completed the double in Tralee on Sunday as they defeated great rivals Killarney Athletic in the final of the Greyhound Bar KO Cup. In the end, a late goal from veteran striker Peter McCarthy was enough to seal the victory for the Celts, who recently reclaimed the league title with a 1-0 win over Dingle Bay Rovers. For Athletic, it was another low-point in a largely disappointing season as the players failed to retain the trophy they won 12 months ago. There was little to choose between the sides as both sets of players struggled to cope with the blazing sun and the artificial surface, which was scorching hot to the touch. (My feet were on fire around five minutes into the warm-up… It was the same for both teams obviously but it certainly wasn’t enjoyable!) The Celts were dominant in the first half and created some good opportunities but dangerous wingers Danny Roche and Wayne Sparling were unable to break the deadlock. We grew into the game in the second period and almost took the lead when centre half Cillian O’Regan diverted a shot goalwards but Robert Osborne reacted well to parry and then scramble to stop the ball on the goal line. Moments later, Athletic attackers Tony Brosnan and Shane Lynch got in each other’s way with the keeper well out of his goal, while at the other end Peter McCarthy was inches away from breaking

the deadlock when his glancing header came back off the post. The experienced attacker was undeterred, however, and, with just 10 minutes to play, he made no mistake from a tight angle to net the winning goal. Celtic had a great season and played the better football again on Sunday. I think if we managed to score first we would have won - it was one of those games that was always going to be decided by a single goal - but unfortunately for us that’s not how it turned out. We might as well call a spade a spade: we got what we deserved this year. We didn’t work hard enough over the course of the season, we didn’t train properly, and we weren’t suitably prepared to take on a team like Celtic. When all of those things are wrong, you just can’t have any confidence going into big games. After sampling so much success in 2017, we had an opportunity to push on and get even better but it was always going to take a big effort. Instead, it was all a bit half-arsed. It’s massively frustrating because we have the makings of a very good team. We’re just not doing things right. It’s a long season and you’d be worn out from it, especially when it ends in such a disappointing manner. At the moment I can’t see myself playing

next year. I’m not really enjoying it. We surely have some young fella coming through who’s actually a proper left back; leave him run around after Danny and Wayne and these fellas! Well done to Celtic on their achievement. The double doesn’t happen very often so the fact that two Killarney clubs have done it in consecutive seasons shows how much talent there is in the town at the moment. With Cedar Galaxy gaining promotion to the Premier B and winning the title as well, it has been a remarkable couple of years for Killarney soccer. Long may it continue.

Words: Adam Moynihan

The World Cup started well but this past week has been incredibly entertaining. Between Neymar being an absolute child against Costa Rica, Xhaka and Shaqiri mixing politics with football, Toni Kroos’ 95th minute winner to save the Germans, the English fans getting their hopes up after their players scored too many goals against Panama, Messi’s arrival, and Maradona being Maradona, it has been great value altogether. Hopefully the knockout stages will continue in the same vein. I fared a bit better with my predictions last week so I’ll stick with it. Confidence is high. You can take these ones to the bank. Last 16 France v Argentina Saturday at 3pm

This is a tricky enough one to call. If you were to just go by the group standings alone, it looks like France advanced to this stage with relative ease but in reality they haven’t impressed at all. There’s a lot of pressure on Paul Pogba to perform, and rightly so considering his profile, but he simply doesn’t look capable of leading a team to a World Cup. He was rubbish in the first game against Australia and although I didn’t see much of his performance against Peru, I heard he was poor again. He was rested for the Denmark game. I like him as a player but he doesn’t do enough; with the attributes he has he should be bossing games. As underwhelming as France have been, Argentina have been far, far worse. They were fortunate to scrape through Group D and against Croatia in particular they looked woeful. All eyes will be on Messi again but the fact of the matter is that he’s surrounded by mediocre players. It’s a sad thought but this could be the last time we see the GOAT at this or any World Cup. In fact, I’m calling it. It will be the last time. Prediction: France 2-1 Argentina Last 16 Uruguay v Portugal Saturday at 7pm

Could Uruguay have an outside chance of going all the way? They had a perfect record in the group phase, winning three out of three as star strikers Cavani and Suarez both got off the mark. Crucially, they appear to have defenders who can actually defend; they’re yet to concede a goal at this World Cup and they’ve kept 10 clean sheets in their last 13 games.

29.06.18

If anyone can find an opening it’s Cristiano Ronaldo, although shockingly the Real Madrid star missed a penalty and failed to score against Iran. It’s another tough one to call but, having said that, I’m 100% sure that Uruguay will win 1-0 after extra time. Prediction: Uruguay 1-0 Portugal (AET) Last 16 Spain v Russia Sunday at 3pm

Russia couldn’t have asked for a better start to the tournament as they battered Saudi Arabia and Egypt, but their wobble against Uruguay means they’ll have to face Spain in the second round. The partisan home crowd will be a factor but Spain should have too much guile. Scratch that; they will have too much guile. 2-0. Prediction: Spain 2-0 Russia Last 16 Croatia v Denmark Sunday at 7pm

It should have been us! On second thought, considering how impressive Croatia have been so far, maybe we’re better off at home. With many of the major nations faltering in the group stages, Croatia have graduated from dark horses go genuine contenders and Denmark are unlikely to pose too many problems on Sunday. Croatia will win 4-0. I’ve never been so sure of anything in my life. Prediction: Croatia 4-0 Denmark

Munster Masters

Kerry

Trounce Cork

Pic: Paudie Healy

Words: Eamonn Fitzgerald Kerry sent us all searching through the record books after defeating Cork 3-18 to 2-4 in a runaway victory in the magnificent revamped Páirc Uí Chaoimh on Saturday last. It’s the biggest winning margin since 1938 and Kerry were complete masters in the one-sided match. Cork got off to a dream start playing into the city goal in the first half. The game was just 80 seconds old when they worked the ball up the left wing. Following good work by Ruairí Deane and a nice ball across the Kerry goalmouth, it was an easy tap-in for Jamie O’Sullivan and there was little Shane Murphy could do about the inevitable goal. It was the dream start for Cork, but it did not rattle Kerry. They responded well in the 5th minute when David Moran made a mark with a clean catch from the kick-out and parted to Stephen O’Brien, who set of on his trademark runs through the Cork defence and scored Kerry’s opening goal. Cork bounced back for their second goal in the 9th minute and once again it was Ruairí Deane who did the good approach work. It was a replica of the first goal with Mark Collins adding the final touch. At this stage it looked as if Cork were going to make a real game of it as they led 2-0 to 1-2. They added a point and it is hard to believe that they went to 2-1 and that was their last score until the 45th minute when they added another point. They scored three more points late in the game and that was all Cork could manage. Just six scores in total over 70 minutes tells its own story for a bewildered Cork team as they were brushed aside by a rampant Kerry side who took complete control and scored at will. They chalked up the points with good support play all-round and led 1-11 to 2-1 at the interval. They lost the influential Stephen O’Brien to a

black card in the 27th minute and he was replaced by Kevin McCarthy. Cork also lost two players to black cards. Sam Ryan gave way to James Loughrey in the 19th minute and Deane was replaced by Paul Kerrigan in the 32nd minute. They seemed to be harsh calls. Ruairí Deane in particular was a big loss to Cork, as was Stephen O’Brien for Kerry. Darran O’Sullivan came on for Micheál Burns at half time but he made little contribution. He was a good player in his younger days but last lost that dash. The same can be said for Donaghy and Killian Young who came on in that second half. Once again I was impressed by Seán O’Shea and David Clifford. They are blending in well . O’Shea ended with four points and Clifford scored two points, but once again it was Paul Geaney who shone brightest of all, ending with a remarkable tally of 2-5 and all of these scores were from play. The Dingle man is invaluable for the Kerry attack. Kerry did well at midfield as they were up against Aidan Walsh and Ian Maguire. When the Cork goalkeeper Mark White went long with the kickouts, David Moran and Jack Barry were able to win clean ball. White also tried the short kick-out but Kerry were so dominant that they pressed up on these and for the most part they were able to deny Cork possession. The Kerry defence settled well after the first 10 minutes and once again Gavin White was the outstanding defender. He can solo with both legs and his up-field sallies, especially in the second half, were a joy to behold. He has a wonderful turn of speed which is so much part of today’s game. He scored a point from one of these long runs out of defence. Kevin McCarthy did well when he came in but I would like to see him take his own score instead of passing it off. He is unselfish but needs to score more himself to nail down a place in the starting 15. My match notebook showed a succession of Kerry

points including two from Paul Murphy who was caught for the first goal but recovered well. James O’Donoghue was on the ball quite a lot and ended with three points, one from a free. Barry John Keane kicked a point after coming in late in the game for O’Donoghue in the 59th minute. How good are Kerry? They have done what has been asked of them and brought in huge scores against Clare and Cork. They have not been tested in a close contest so the next game in two weeks’ time against Galway will provide a closer examination of their progress. They have exceptionally good scoring forwards and there is an intensity to their game in the tackle which will stand to them throughout the field. The two goals they conceded early in the Cork game would have knocked another team but Kerry have youth in their side. Remember there is no one over the age of 30 in the starting 15. Last week alone, the Kerry U-17s, the juniors and the seniors all recorded big wins. Meanwhile, the Dubs are winning by big margins also and what we have seen to date suggests that Kerry are the only team capable of taking on the All-Ireland champions. Well done to Kerry. The newly revamped Páirc Uí Chaoimh is a credit to the Cork County Board. The 42nd annual Killarney Athletic 7-a-side in association with Killarney Credit Union got under way this week and already there have been some cracking games down at the club grounds in Woodlawn. MD O’Shea’s are the early front-runners in the senior following impressive victories over The Speakeasy and holders the Fáilte Legends.

Randles Extend Legion Deal By Three Years Killarney Legion GAA Club have revealed that main club and senior team sponsor David Randles of Randles Brothers Nissan Dealers Tralee and Killarney has renewed his partnership with the club. The new deal was launched at the club grounds in Derreen on a gloriously sunny Sunday morning. Present at the launch were Chairman Fergal Moynihan, Club Sponsors Liaison Officer Seán Murphy and the senior team panel and manage-

ment. Following Kerry’s 80th Munster Championship win the previous evening, Brian Kelly and James O Donoghue were on hand to thank Dave Randles for his continued support. Club officials say Legion are extremely fortunate to have such a generous patron in David who has signed up for another three years, which will bring his association with the club to six years by 2020. The senior team, to their end, has also embarked on a fundraising drive with particular

emphasis on the club lotto and the launch was also an opportunity for them to unveil their new training gear with the Randles Brothers logo emblazoned on it. The Killarney Legion Club Executive also took the opportunity to urge its members to always be aware and supportive of its sponsors when they are doing their business in town. They also paid tribute to Seán Murphy who continues to be at the hub of all the club’s sponsorship dealings.

Rugby News ... Words: Liam Murphy

Last Saturday morning the drama continued in the Australia versus Ireland series. Following on from the loss at the hands of Michael Cheika’s men in the first test, Ireland were chomping at the bit and looking for redemption in Melbourne. Another epic was on the cards and the second test certainly lived up to expectation. Joe Schmidt learned some lessons from the previous weekend and, to be fair to the Wallabies, the home side found it difficult to replicate the aggression from the first test. Another cracker of a match was witnessed and the

The Fossa U-14 girls relay team who won gold at the County Athletics Finals.

Series In The Balance After Epic Ireland Win starting Johnny Sexton, who took over fly half duties from Munster-bound Joey Carbery, was on fire scoring 16 points from the boot. Captain Peter O’Mahony was Man of the Match as he kept David Pocock quiet and led from the front. Fellow Munster man, hooker Niall Scannell, also gad a storming match, as did Leinster’s Tadhg Furlong who scored a fantastic try and surely cemented his spot as the best tight head in the game. Rob Kearney credited Furlong with the best cleanout he has ever seen, clearing Pocock out of a certain steal in the 40th minute. This man is only getting better with every cap.

Tadhg Beirne was epic, earning his first Irish cap and playing as if he had 100. This guy is a very exciting prospect for Munster and Ireland alike. In a highly entertaining match, there was always drama and with Jack McGrath earning a silly yellow with a few minutes to go, it looked like he may have let the home side back in. However, Ireland went on to win and leave the series in the balance with a huge match ahead in Sydney tomorrow. Here’s hoping the lads can follow up last week’s first win on Australian soil in almost 40 years with a second win in a week!

Killarney Swimming Club

SPECIAL OLYMPICS: Congratulations to Killarney Swimming Club members, Mary Claire McCarthy and Antonette O’Leary, who took part recently in the 2018 Special Olympics Ireland Games, swimming in the National Aquatic Centre in Blanchardstown where they represented both Kerry and Munster. Now, us folk in Killarney Swimming Club have always known that these two girls are fantastic swimmers, so we were expecting nothing less than their best, but the opposition would be the finest swimmers in the country. So, the question on everyone’s lips as we waved them off was, would they just be small fish in a big pool? There was no need to worry. Antonette won a very precious gold medal in the 100 backstroke and Mary Claire won silver in the 100 freestyle and bronze in the 200 freestyle. But the proudest moment for both families came when both Killarney girls swam on the Munster freestyle relay team – and won gold for their province! Both swimmers must now wait to see if they will be chosen to represent Ireland at the Special Olympic Games to be held in Abu Dhabi next March – there won’t be a fingernail left in the club. Well done to both girls – we are all so proud of you.

Kilcummin GAA

JUNIOR FOOTBALL: After two good wins over Laune Rangers and Kenmare our Juniors went down to Glenbeigh Glencar by three points recently. However they remain in a strong position and a win over Annascaul on Friday July 6th at home should be enough to contest the latter stages. Final score Glenbeigh 4-11 Kilcummin 1-17. SENIOR FOOTBALL: Rd 8 of the County League sees us travel to Tralee to take on Na Gaeil on this Saturday at 7.30 pm. Well done to our club players who won Munster medals last weekend with their County teams. Kevin McCarthy played a significant role in the senior’s resounding victory over Cork while Paul O’Shea captained the Kerry minors to victory over Clare. Keith O’Leary was a substitute on the minor team in which James Foley was a selector. Best wishes to Sean O’Leary Mastergeeha who is a member of the Kerry U-20 team who play Cork in the Munster Final on this Friday at 7.30pm in Austin Stack Park. Also to Kieran Murphy who is part of the Kerry Juniors who play Cork in the Munster Final on this Wednesday 17th at 7.30 also in Austin Stack Park.

Killarney Legion

U14 GIRLS: Killarney Legion 4-3 Kilcummin 5-1. Always tough to take when you lose by the narrowest of margins but it has added sting when it’s a goal right at the death. Such was the fate of our gallant u14 girls against a battling Kilcummin side. Having worked hard and shown no mean skill it looked like they would make it to the final whistle but alas in a breakaway last-ditch effort Kilcummin snatched the win with a goal. The girls and support were rightly down after the dramatic events but this won’t always be the case as they’re good enough to bounce back. U12 GIRLS: The U12 girls didn’t en-

joy any better luck than their u14 colleagues as they went down to a very good Corca Dhuibhne side. The difference was the West Kerry girls’ more economical use of possession and a slight age advantage as the Legion side had 14 who are eligible again next year as well as two who have a further two years, which augurs well for the future.
