Much missed Weeshie Fogarty remembered on his home patch

One of Killarney's most dedicated football men was honoured on Thursday - when a roundabout was named in his memory.

Man critical after serious Thursday crash

| By Michelle Crean and Sean Moriarty Killarney Municipal District dedicated the roundabout at the junction of Dalton’s Avenue and Marian Terrace, to the late broadcaster and sportsman, Weeshie Fogarty. The proud Legion, basketball champion and Radio Kerry commentator was one of the town’s best loved sons. Thursday’s event was attended by his wife Joan, daughters Denise, Carolann, son Kieran, grandchildren Eva and Lucy, son-in-law Glen and the extended Fogarty and Slattery families. Local politicians and Legion club members were also present. “Weeshie, as we know, made his mark in journalism and broadcasting, particularly on Radio Kerry, where his unique style and turn of phrase won audiences far beyond the Kingdom and gave him a truly international reach,” Mayor Marie Moloney told the assembled group. “Weeshie’s voice was instantly recognisable. He had a special and unique way of talking about football and in talking about anything for that matter. And behind all of that was a tremendous passion – a passion for sport, a passion for Kerry and a passion for Killarney. He also enjoyed much success at club and intercounty level on the playing field with

his beloved Legion club and in his many years as a referee. “It is hugely appropriate that this roundabout is within a short distance of his beloved Fitzgerald Stadium, which in many ways was his second home. I can remember hearing a broadcast in which Weeshie, speaking from the commentary box, described the vista of the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks, St Mary’s Cathedral and St Finan’s Hospital, where, of course, he worked for many years. The piece proved Weeshie’s deep love for Killarney and its people. This was complemented by the award-winning Terrace Talk programme which had an enormous listenership.” Killarney Legion GAA Club said that they are "delighted and proud" that the Killarney Municipal District saw fit to dedicate the roundabout to the man who "is a legend".

Weeshie played for the club to the highest level, also representing Kerry at all levels culminating in winning an All-Ireland Senior medal in 1969. After his playing career ended he turned his attention to refereeing, taking charge of several County Championship finals. Outside of the playing arena Weeshie excelled in his role as a broadcaster for over 20 years on Radio Kerry and was known throughout the country as the 'Voice of Kerry Football'. In this role he won numerous accolades including PPI Radio Awards and was inducted into the prestigious McNamee Awards Hall of Fame in 2016 for his lifelong contribution to the GAA. He dedicated his working life to the care of others in his role as a psychiatric nurse in St Finan'sHospital, which fittingly overlooked his beloved Fitzgerald Stadium.

A man remains in critical condition in Cork University Hospital as the Killarney Advertiser closed for press on Thursday night. The man in his 20s sustained serious injuries in a crash in the townland of Buddaghans near Coolick National School in Kilcummin in the early hours of Thursday morning. A second occupant of the car, a juvenile, received minor injuries in the incident. The road was closed for a number of hours on Thursday morning while specialist collision forensic garda officers examined the scene. “We are appealing to people who may have witnessed the movements of a Toyota Yaris motor car in the early hours of Thursday morning in the Killarney and Kilcummin area,” a Killarney Garda spokesperson told the Killarney Advertiser. There are reports that the car may have been stolen but Killarney Garda refused to comment on this aspect of the investigation. Killarney Gardai can be contacted on 064 6671160.

St Finan's could be used to house Ukrainian refugees | By Sean Moriarty The Killarney Advertiser understands that St Finan's Hospital could be used to house Ukrainian refugees. The site has has been offered to the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage as potential accommodation for those displaced by the war. While nothing has been confirmed discussions are taking place at government level. “I have heard this, both on my travels in the county and outside of the county

LATEST: Yet another proposal for St Finan's site. Photo: Grigoriy Geniyevskiy

but it is only speculation,” TD Michael Healy-Rae told the Killarney Advertiser. “I only deal in facts and until we know more we cant say anything.”

This is just the latest proposal for the landmark building that has been idle for almost ten years. It was put on the open market last year by the Health Service Executive after being offered to a number of agencies including the local council but so far no one has expressed an interest in the site. Mayor Marie Moloney is also aware of this latest proposal. At a recent Killarney Municipal District meeting she called for the building to be converted into one and two bedroom apartments to help reduce the growing housing list in the local municipality.

Her proposal was not carried as other councillors felt it would cost too much to convert the building into housing and apartments. She said the latest proposal has not been confirmed by anyone in the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage. “Now, all of sudden it is not too expensive,” she told the Killarney Advertiser. “This should be for applicants on the housing list who are waiting for one and two bedroom apartments as well as accommodating Ukrainian refugees. We have a shortage of one and two bedroom apartments in the area."

BikeFest details revealed | By Sean Moriarty After a two-year hiatus, Ireland BikeFest 2022 is back on the road.

With fourteen years of mileage on the clock, Ireland Bikefest is renowned as one of Europe’s premier free open motorcycle festivals and is a firm favourite of bikers, aspiring bikers, families, visitors and locals alike. Thousands of motorcycle enthusiasts from around the world are expected to visit the picturesque town and county to make the most of the fantastic scenery, touring routes, hospitality and festival atmosphere. The motorcycle festival makes a welcome return to Killarney from June 3 to 6 and the fantastic line-up of free entertainment, set to take place at festival headquarters The Gleneagle Hotel, has just been announced. This year’s programme features the biggest and best line-up yet taking in three stages - the Main Stage INEC, the Outdoor Stage in the Bike Village and The Harley Bar.

Some of the greatest tribute and cover bands on the planet are set to perform, the Gleneagle INEC Arena, including The Harley’s, Bon Giovi, JoanovArc, Abuse your Illusion – Guns N’Roses Tribute, The Irish Rolling Stones and festival legends and internationally acclaimed AC/DC Tribute - Hells Bells. Outside, in the purpose-built festival Bike Village, the Outdoor Stage will host a marathon of live music with performances by Oracle, The Big Rock Band, Chapel Hill Gang, Prima Donna Rising, The Dixie Micks, Liam O'Connor, The Back Axles, Q the Quo and Friends in Low Places. And that’s not all! Favourite bikers’ haunt The Harley Bar is set to host Traffic, Two Time Polka and Hell for Leather.

Killarney Gardai are expecting large crowds in town for this weekend’s Rally of the Lakes. | By Sean Moriarty Months of planning has gone into a road safety plan to help both rally organisers and the general public. With the expected increase in traffic volumes on the roads by day and the significant increase in footfall within the town by night, Killarney Gardaí have deployed additional resources for the entire weekend to address all aspects of policing. Gardai say they want everyone to enjoy the rally and “what Killarney has to offer” but any element of ant-social behaviour will be dealt with in a very strict manner. “Everyone is very positive this year, our plan is to provide reassurance to the public, and, in the event of an incident occurring, a timely and appropriate Garda response,” Sergeant Dermot O’Connell told the Killarney Advertiser. “Due to the cancellation of the Rally in 2020 and 2021 we expect rally enthusiasts to travel to Killarney in large numbers.” Mobile patrols and checkpoints will be

very evident over the weekend. Drivers will be randomly tested on the roadside for alcohol and drugs. Unmarked Garda vehicles will monitor the public roads to detect incidents of dangerous driving. Uniformed and Plain clothes Gardaí will walk the beat to detect illegal drug use and incidents of public disorder. “The policing plan takes into account the increased risk that is associated with all major events. “Similar to previous years, individuals arrested may find themselves held in custody overnight and brought directly to court the following day. Our aim this year is to further reduce anti-social behaviour. “We want all who attend Killarney this weekend to enjoy themselves, enjoy what Killarney has to offer, to create a positive memory of the weekend. “Any individual who intends to cause disruption on the roads or within the town should cast their memory back to the many Garda prosecutions initiated in 2018 and 2019.”

Nathan’s Walk launch set for Tuesday evening Details of this year’s Darkness into Light – Nathan’s Walk will be unveiled at a special launch event at Reidy’s Bar on Tuesday night. | By Sean Moriarty Marie O'Carroll set up the Killarney walk in 2011 following the loss of her 14-yearold son Nathan. The idea behind 'Nathan’s Walk, Darkness into Light - Pieta House' is to help spread awareness to help prevent suicide and self-harm. It's also a chance to raise vital funds for the service provided free by Pieta House. The inaugural event took place in Dublin’s Phoenix Park in 2010 and it has now grown to become and international event. This year’s event will start at 4.25am

on May 7 from Ross Castle and Marie is encouraging early registration as she is expecting a large turn-out. The walk did not take place in 2020 and last year’s walk was a scaled back version due to the pandemic. “We will open registration at the launch,” Marie told the Killarney Advertiser. “T-shirts are in limited supply this year so we are encouraging early registration. We don’t want big crowds at the sign-on desk on Saturday morning either.” Additional early registration dates have been organised for the Racecourse on May 5 between 5pm and 8pm and May 6 between 5pm and 8pm.

Founders of Killarney’s oldest GAA club remembered Dr Crokes commemorated its founding fathers of 1886 by unveiling a plaque at the entrance to the Railway Road on Tuesday evening.

Matt O’Neill, club chairperson addressed the distinguished audience, which included Larry McCarthy, President of the GAA, assembled outside the Courthouse on a balmy sun -filled evening and paid tribute to the ‘18 Dangerous Dreamers’ as the founders were fondly known. “These were young men, some as young as 16 years. These were brave men, who earned a free Ireland, governed by its own people. These were true Irish men, who wished to freely live their Gaelic culture and heritage and decided to express that ancient heritage through the medium of our Gaelic games and under the newly-formed banner of the Gaelic Athletic Association. They embraced a wonderful dream, a wonderful vision, aisling breá, aisling áilinn, aisling misniúil,” said Mr McCarthy. Clrr Niall ‘Botty’ O’Callaghan is a staunch member of Dr Crokes and acted as M.C. for the historic occasion and excelled in the formalities in a professional pres-

entation of the 55 minutes allotted. He introduced the President of the GAA, Larry McCarthy, and Fr Tom Looney who captured the essence of the extremely dangerous times of the 1880’s in Killarney. It was a time of great turmoil due to the Land League and for the ‘18 Dangerous Dreamers’ who founded the club. Sports journalist Éamonn Fitzgerald welcomed the special guests present, representing the descendants of the 18 founders. Several of the family descendants attended and one represented the families during the formalities. A total of 14 were there in person and four more were video-linked in from USA, Belgium, England, Australia. The live streaming of the historic event was courtesy of club member John C . O’Shea. Among the guests were John and Philip Culligan, formerly of Ross Rd, representing their mother, Nee Crowe, a relative

of Archbishop Croke. When the formalities concluded the attendees went to the Dr Crokes clubhouse at Lewis Rd. to join members in music, song and presentations. Maggie McAuliffe, Club Events Officer and her many co-helpers provided an excellent array of various foods. Genealogist Rachel Foley, who was very helpful in tracing the descendants, is also the club’s Cultural AND Scór Officer. She presented her Scór teams for a half hour of wonderful entertainment. Led by musical director Noel O’Sullivan, the entertainers included Liam Randles, Aoife O’Callaghan, Jean Foley, Saoirse O’Sullivan and Teegan O’Sullivan. Sheila Dickson coordinated the celebrations in the clubhouse, where the descendants were presented with copies of the Dr Crokes History book. One of the descendants said: “Thanks

to your excellent research I found out more about my family here tonight than I never knew. Thank you Dr Crokes, you are a wonderful family and you do things so well.’ The President of the GAA, who had visited the club house and amenities earlier in the day and saw the U 11 and U 13 teams being coached on their regular Tuesday evening sessions, was highly impressed. He stressed the importance of tradition and how Dr Crokes valued that. Jokingly, he said it was hard for him as a Cork man to instance the case of Evan Looney, a fourth-generation Dr Crokes player who was man of the match in the Munster U20 final on the previous evening. President Larry Mc Cathy, left Lewis Rd to drive back to Dublin with memories of the beautiful tones of Scór winner Saoirse singing ‘The Parting Glass’.

Two events will run in the British capital and each has an Aghadoe native at the helm The two London events also raise funds for Immigrant Counselling and Psychotherapy (ICAP) in London, a mental health charity serving the Irish community in the UK. Currently Killarney children are being forced to travel to travel to receive their jabs for Measles Mumps and Rubella. Cllr. John O'Donoghue raised the issue at a recent Kerry County Council meeting. “The current situation whereby families are being asked to travel across the county to receive vaccines for their children is completely unsatisfactory and I believe it encourages families to not bother engaging with the services, particularly those who do not own their own car,” he told the meeting. “Indeed given the standard of public transport servicing some areas of the County, it could be argued that these people are being discriminated against. I urge this chamber to call on the HSE to immediately reopen inoculation centres

Cllr. John O'Donoghue

in all major urban areas of the county, or better again, to revert to the old system whereby children received their vaccines in school from a visiting nurse or doctor.” Cllr O’Donoghue’s motion was passed and the council executive will now contact the Health Services Executive in an effort to open vaccination clinics in Killarney and other urban centres in the country. HSE will be contacted regarding the matter.

John Moriarty retires after 26 years service for Killcummin Rural Development Scheme Kilcummin Rural Development Group is bidding a fond but sad farewell to its long serving scheme supervisor, John Moriarty. John is retiring following 26 years of valuable service to the Kilcummin and surrounding community, and to the scheme participants in particular. The group had a small gathering in their project office to recognise John’s huge contribution. At the gathering, he was presented with some gifts and had a chance to celebrate with some of the current and past sub-sponsors, and participants of the scheme. Kilcummin CE scheme was initiated in 1993 in response to the EU Leader 11 Programme. Their objective is to maximise the potential of local resources and to provide job training and opportunities for the unemployed in the area, to improve the environment and provide quality essential services to Sporting, Social and Cultural Organisations in Kilcummin and the greater Killarney area.

RETIREMENT: Kilcummin Rural Development Group meet to mark John Moriarty's retirement

Helen Moynihan who will take over the role of scheme supervisor on John`s retirement said: “I certainly have big boots to fill, as John was very hard working, effective, liked and respected by all, but it is a challenge I am relishing. I had the great fortune of working with John in his capacity as scheme supervisor and I can testify to how much he will be missed amongst everyone involved in the scheme.” During its 29 year history Kilcummin Ru-

ral Development Ltd has worked with 12 sub-sponsors who provide valuable work experience and guidance for many participants, over the years many have gone on to progress back into gainful employment in their preferred area. John Lenihan, Chairperson of Kilcummin Rural Development Group said that John’s experience over the last 26 years was invaluable. His interaction with both the department of Social Protection and

the local sub sponsors was beneficial to the CE Scheme and was the key to the overall success. John Lenihan wished John, his wife Mary and his family all the best for the future. “Even outside his role of CE scheme supervisor, John is very active in the local community, and we are sure to see him remaining as a very valuable and permanent member of our community for many years into the future,” said Mr Lenihan.

What is she driving now? | By Sean Moriarty By day Fiona Carroll drives the minibus for St Francis Special School. During her free time she is often found behind the wheel of her classic 31-yearold Nissan Fiagro or riding her Harley Davidson Heritage Softail. Last weekend she drove a 1995 Ford 5000 tractor for the first time. Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club (KVCVC) ran its annual tractor run last Sunday. Over 30 tractors took part in the run which travelled to Muckross, Glenflesk, Barraduff and back to Killarney via Tiern-

aboul. It was organised to raise funds for Kerry Mental Health but Fiona, who is a member of KVCVC said events like this also raise awareness. “It started out as a joke and the next thing I knew the club has organised a tractor for me,” she told the Killarney Advertiser. “There were people at the event who came over talking to me, asking about the tractor, many of these people would never have spoken to me, many of them are on their own, they mightn’t speak to someone from one end of the week to the next. Sunday’s event was good for my own mental health as well as everyone else who took part.”

They were promoting launching the rescheduled performance of Handel’s ‘Messiah’ in St Mary’s Cathedral in Killarney, Co Kerry. The world famous oratorio no will take place on Saturday, May 7 at 8.00pm and will feature the Dublin Bach Singers, a choir based in the Pro-Cathedral

Three of the soloists on the night have strong connections with Kerry as soprano, Sharon Lyons now lives in Killorglin, tenor, Conor Prendiville is also from Killorglin and alto Leanne Fitzgerald is from Lixnaw. Ukrainians hail the kindness of the Irish

War displaced Ukrainians had their first experience of the Ring of Kerry last weekend and it is fair to say that were well impressed. | By Natalya Krasnenkova Philip O’Callaghan of O’Callaghan Coaches & Chauffeur Services organised the trip for 50 Ukrainians. “I want to start immediately by thanking the organisers, thanks to whom this exciting journey took place,” said Yaroslava Shkurko, a teacher from Kyiv. “I'll start with Maeve O’Connell, she works at our front desk. With Maeve, we practice learning English. It's nice to talk when she has a few minutes. When I jokingly called her my teacher, she was not confused and invited me to a lesson the next day. “Very nice person, many thanks for the sincerity, positive attitude and desire to help solve any issues.“ "Of course, our driver Con Riordan is a model of tolerance and restraint. Watching us with interest, he always tried to be close and did his job perfectly, especially on the steep mountain parts of the route. We applaud.” They visited Kerry Bog Village where they were able to get acquainted with the history and life of Irish society of the 19th century. “It is nice to note that our village hous-

es were also covered with reeds. And the interior decoration of houses is very similar to Ukrainian traditions,” added Yaroslava. They stopped for lunch at O’Carroll’s Cove restaurant on the coast where there was another pleasant surprise. In addition to a wonderful dinner, they received a musical gift - a local band played several songs for them. Ukrainians are a singing nation and repaid the locals for their hospitality with a mini concert of Ukrainian songs. “I am so inspired by the nature of Ireland that I want to insert a memory card with a recording of a trip to the Ring of Kerry and review it over and over again. Green meadows, ivy-covered houses, mountains, lakes, the ocean. You would see my son rolling up his pants, running along the ocean, and my daughter throwing pebbles into the water. But the most important impression on me is made by the people who live here. This trip was a great gift for us, but most of the people who took part in it saw us for the first time. Now I see that I want to instil in my children the same kindness that I see every day in the Irish,” said Yulia Dolia from Kyiv.

Applications open for Liebherr apprenticeships and scholarships Applications open for Liebherr apprenticeships and scholarships Both programmes are aligned with the academic calendar, reflecting the importance of a blended approach to training and education, with a mixture of practical and classroom based learning. The programmes offer school leavers a number of routes into training, education and full-time employment with Liebherr Container Cranes. Apprentice programmes lead to craft and academic qualifications and opportunity to continue education to degree level while scholarship programme recipients benefit from paid tuition, work placement, summer work and one-toone tuition. Apprentice programme with an academic qualification Run in partnership with Munster Technological University (MTU), Liebherr's four year enhanced apprentice programme sees apprentices choose from one of the following disciplines; Electrical, Mechanical Automation and Maintenance Fitter or Metal Fabricator. In addition to their craft qualifications, apprentices complete a Level 6 higher

certificate in engineering, resulting in a dual qualification and the opportunity to continue to an honours degree in engineering (Level 8). Apprentices benefit from practical training in Liebherr and get to work on the production of their cranes. In third and fourth year, they get the opportunity to work at Liebherr job sites worldwide as well as participate in an apprentice exchange programme with sister companies in Austria and Germany.

ENGINEERING SCHOLARSHIPS

The Liebherr Engineering Scholarship Programme is designed for Leaving Cert

Siamsa Tíre offers musicians opportunity to perform on stage Siamsa Tíre celebrates the diversity of traditional Irish music and has issued an open call for musicians to apply to perform at its monthly Trad Connections concert series. Is there any sound as uplifting as the opening notes of a West Kerry set, a Sliabh Luachra slide, a barn dance from Clare, or any as moving as the melody of a sean nós ballad? Siamsa Tíre, The National Folk Theatre of Ireland, recognises Irish traditional music as one of the richest and deepest seams of our cultural heritage. From the Chieftains and the Clancy Brothers to artists such as The Gloaming and Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh today; our music is rooted in our past yet endlessly evolving as it plays with tradition in the present. “We want to celebrate this with our Trad Connections concert series,” Siamsa Tíre’s Musical Director, Tom Hanafin, said.

“We want to introduce audiences to established local, national, and international traditional musicians as well as to upand-coming acts while also supporting musicians by offering them an exciting opportunity to perform.” Siamsa Tíre introduced this series in January 2020 just prior to the outbreak of COVID, hosting two very successful live concerts. Lockdown then meant there were few opportunities for musicians to perform. “So, we continued with the Trad Connections series online and streamed these concerts showcasing different acts on the last Friday of every month,” Tom added. Many well-known names have performed as part of Trad Connections to date. They include Lorraine Nash and 3 on the Bund, as well as Fergal Scahill, Ryan Molloy, Oracle, Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh, Macdara Yeates, Conor Moriarty and Conor O’Sullivan, The Rising, Elle Ma-

rie O’Dwyer, Zoe Conway, John McIntire, Greta Curtin, Killarney School of Music and many others. This month’s Trad Connections concert takes place today (Friday) and will feature concertina player Greta Curtin, fiddle player Jessie Healy, and guitarist Darragh Curtin perform tunes from their vast repertoire of reels, jigs, slides, polkas, hornpipes, and more. The team at Siamsa Tíre is now looking for new voices to showcase. “We plan to continue this series into next year and beyond. We have a limited number of slots available this year and we’re currently filling slots for 2023. We welcome submissions from local, national, and international musicians. It doesn’t matter if they are well-known or new to the stage; we will consider them for inclusion in the Trad Connection series.” Anyone who would like to be considered can complete a submission form via www.siamsatire.com/events/folk-pro-

Keith plans to share his secrets in INEC show | By Tristan O'Donoghue Keith Barry kicks off his ‘Reconnected’ tour today (Friday) at the Black Box Theatre in Galway, but fear not as it won’t be long until he brings his new show to Killarney this summer.

CAMINO WALK: Kerry Camino committee members Adrienne McLoughlin, Mike O’Donnell, Grace O’Donnell and Ingrid Boyle pictured ahead of the Kerry Camino Walk this weekend.

Walkers prepare to take on the Kerry Camino this weekend The annual Kerry Camino three-day guided walk from Tralee to Dingle will take place on the May Bank Holiday weekend. The event has been held every year, with the exception of 2020 when it was cancelled due to COVID restrictions. It was established by a voluntary local group based in Tralee to encourage walking tourism and revive Kerry's links with pilgrims of the past, walking in the footsteps of St Brendan along the Dingle Way. Participating numbers have grown annually from 30 in 2012 to 350 in 2019. Over the three days from today (Friday) to Sunday, walkers pass through rugged, mountainous and coastal scenery, through towns and villages, stamping logbooks until reaching the final destination of the Spanish built Church of St James in Dingle, where Certificates of Completions are presented. Whether you come on a pilgrimage of personal faith and renewal, or for the fun and health benefits of a good walk, you are guaranteed an enjoyable and enriching experience.

Kerry Camino is both a walker's dream and a path of pilgrimage for the contemplative. The Kerry Camino Walk Weekend is a great social event. "Often people might be afraid to tackle such a walk by themselves, but the route is guided all the way along, and no-one gets left behind," Adrienne McLoughlin from Kerry Camino said. A certain level of fitness is required, with appropriate footwear, clothing, drinks and snacks. Each day's walking takes approx. five to seven hours and refreshments are provided at the conclusion of each day's walk. "As a voluntary organisation we are very grateful to volunteer members of Tralee Mountaineering Club, Tralee Civil Defence and other local walking enthusiasts who have assisted us in a guiding capacity for our walk weekends since 2012."

Keith, who will take to the INEC stage on June 11, has been coming to Killarney for nearly 20 years. He told the Killarney Advertiser he "can’t wait to get back on stage and have the craic" where he will be full of energy as for the first time, he begins to share some of his secrets with the crowd by teaching one half of the audience how to hack into the other half’s brain. The show which is designed to "reconnect people emotionally, intellectually and sub-consciously" will also feature Keith performing dangerous demonstrations with a crossbow. He says the show is designed to make people "laugh until their faces hurt" but most importantly to make people re-connect and "experience a night of wonder, amazement and a feel-good factor" which will stay with the audience for weeks - after all the whole world has been through a period of isolation. Keith has always themed his performances which is evident from his last show 'Insanity', which "ended in a fullblown rave". With the theme of this show being reconnection, Keith has said this will be the "most emotionally charged ending to a show that he has ever designed" as he incorporates a spiritual ending to the performance. When asked if he gets nervous before performing a trick, he said there's always some nerves in case something goes wrong. "I always have a bit of nerves, things can go wrong. I've got to figure out when they do go wrong how I'm going to get out of it. I've learned over the years to turn nerves into positive energy."

HAVING A LAUGH: Keith Barry is bringing his ‘Reconnected’ tour to the INEC in June and plans to make the audience laugh.

Aside from discussing his new show, Keith told the Killarney Advertiser about how much he enjoys performing in Killarney citing the big stage, good lighting, large audience and great energy from the crowd as important factors. He also mentioned the nightlife and great meals that Killarney offers after he finishes his performance including Reidy’s and Treyvaud’s for food and drinks. "'I usually stay overnight, we always party in Killarney, and have a few drinks afterwards then hit the road the next day." Keith has worked hard throughout the pandemic, only taking time off for Christmas over the last two and a half years. He is doing really well on television with his show on RTÉ One 'The Keith Barry Experience' every Saturday night where he brings a lot of celebrities along with him. Naturally, Keith is looking forward to well deserved holidays over the summer listing Derrynane, Dingle and Killarney as possible locations.

Proposals to end turf sales should not go ahead Fine Gael Deputy Brendan Griffin, Deputy Government Chief Whip, has said the proposal to end the sale of turf should not go ahead. Environment Minister Eamon Ryan wants to ban the sale of turf from September as part of efforts to crack down on the use of smokey fuels. Members of the Fine Gael Parliamentary Party had a meeting with Minister Ryan on Tuesday night regarding the sale and distribution of turf.

"With all that is happening right now, in terms of the war, escalating energy bills, future fuel sources, Minister Ryan’s proposals as mooted in recent weeks should not proceed. This was made clear to Minister Ryan,” said Griffin. "Minister Ryan agreed to meet us again in the future to continue discussions on this issue which is absolutely integral to many householders across rural Ireland. "We look forward to this continuing engagement."

SHOWTIME: Performers from Celtic Steps The Show entertain war-displaced Ukrainians last Friday night.

Celtic Steps spark a show of solidarity for Ukraine

World champion Irish musicians and dancers put on quite a show at the weekend with a spectacular line-up of high energy jigs and reels for the people of Ukraine. On Friday, Celtic Steps The Show welcomed over one hundred Ukrainian guests to their Irish music and dance show at Killarney Racecourse where they were introduced to the magic of Irish music and culture. “For many months, we’ve all watched what’s been unfolding in the Ukraine with great sadness," Sean Murphy, co-producer of Celtic Steps, said. "A couple of weeks ago, I met a Ukrainian woman and her child at the Innisfallen Hotel and it felt like the right time to extend the hand of hospitality. I invited them and the wider group to the show in the hope that the music might help raise their spirits.” The Ukrainian group were collected from their place of residency at the Innisfallen Hotel courtesy of Flynn Coaches and transported to the racecourse, where they were welcomed by a sea of blue and yellow balloons at the entrance to the theatre. The highlight of the night was the performance of the Ukrainian National Anthem by the Celtic Steps musicians,

who had taken the time earlier in the day to learn the piece. “Celtic Steps The Show, thank you so much for the Ukrainian Anthem, we appreciate it a lot, we were in tears, Slava Ukraine!” Natalya Krasnenkova remarked. David Rea, co-producer and narrator of the show, said on the night that they "are privileged to have some guests here tonight, who through no fault of their own ended up coming to Ireland". "We are delighted to have you and we hope you have a nice time in Kerry for as long as you are here…this is a small tribute to you.” George Saary who works at the Innisfallen Hotel in Killarney and who helped coordinate the event added “On behalf of the Ukrainian people, we want to thank you for your great welcome. Some of the group said they barely slept after experiencing the energy and excitement of the show and they all appreciated the love and care that was shown to them on the night.”

"After working extremely hard over the past two years to put gym facilities in place for our club, vandals struck severely damaging the entry door to our new gym. "To say we are appalled and disappointed is an understatement after all the fundraising and help from our community over the last 24 months." TIPS: Tony Griffin, Manager of Pat McDonnell Paints in Tralee, gives tips on how to paint the exterior of your new home.

How to paint the exterior of your newly built home We get a lot of queries at Pat McDonnell Paints this time of year, as the weather improves, from customers wanting to paint the exterior of their newly built house. | By Tony Griffin, Manager Pat McDonnell Paints Tralee Painting the exterior of your home not only transforms it but will also help to protect it from weather damage. We recommend that you always leave freshly coated surfaces to dry out fully for about six months before sealing it with any kind of paint. Once the surface is dry, have checked the weather forecast and picked your colours, here are some simple steps to follow! STEP 1: Preparation Cover the ground with dust sheets and tape where it’s needed, this will ensure your new paths are kept clean of paint spills! Next, dust and clean all the surfaces. Some may need to be powerwashed

first and cleaned fully with an anti-fungal wash like Farbex Exterior Fungicidal Wash, especially if there are any traces of algae or mould. Scrape down the walls so there are no uneven surfaces and fill any cracks or holes with an exterior filler like Prestonett Exterior Filler. Mask surfaces you wish to protect, like your window and door frames with a good quality masking tape like Deltec Masking Tape Extreme. STEP 2: Sealing If your walls need to be sealed then priming is one of the best ways. We recommended Ralston Wall Primer which has been diluted with water by a ratio of 1:1.

This means if you have a five litre can, you will dilute it with five litres of water. Leave to dry for approx. four hours and once dry you can paint as normal. STEP 3: Applying the paint It is important that you use a masonry paint when doing the exterior of your home, made in Ireland Dulux Weathershield Smooth Masonry Paint is perfect for our unique weather. We recommend diluting your first coat with water by 10%. Ensure you mix the paint thoroughly and apply starting from the top and working your way down with the aid of your cutting in brush, masonry brush and a roller designed for the job; we recommend the Corona Tuff Pro 9” Sleeve. Leave the paint to dry for approx. two to four hours depending on the manufacturer's instructions. Once dry you can paint with the remaining coats without thinning the paint. Apply a second coat and again

leave to dry for approx. two to four hours. Tip: Always remove masking tape after a few hours as the tape glue might dry and damage the fittings and windows. Equipment: Don’t forget the tools for the job. Below is a list of the equipment you need for this job. • 4” Harper & Green Masonry Brush • 2” Wooster Soft Tip Brush for cutting in • 3 x Harper & Green 12×12 Drop Covering Sheets • 1 x Corona Tuff Pro 9” Sleeve • 1 x Wooster 9” Roller Frame • Deltec Masking Tape Extreme • 1 x Harper & Green Blue Roller Bucket • 1 x Harper & Green 2 Piece Yellow Extension Pole Correct ladder or equipment to safely access the eves of the house and facia and soffit. Help - I can’t get off the toilet!

Why do ageing adults end up in assisted-living facilities? It’s right there in the title: it comes down to not being able to get up off the toilet. It may sound insensitive, but it’s a very real thing.

More broadly, the reason ageing adults go to assisted-living facilities is loss of independence. As adults age, basic movement becomes much more difficult. People retire, they are less active, and they have fewer reasons to get up and out of the house. So they sit all day, and their muscles atrophy. That’s why it’s so important to stay active as we age. We need to find or stick to an exercise routine to preserve our independence for as long as possible - not just for our own sakes, but also so our children won’t have to take care of us, or pay someone else to. The exercise needs of the ageing population vary by degree, not kind. What is standing up from the toilet? An air squat. What happens when someone falls and gets back up? An ‘Up-Down’. How does shopping get brought in from the car? With a farmer’s carry. Ageing adult athletes may not be breaking gym records - even though we have a few of our masters cohort deadlifting over 100kg!, but they can certainly perform modified versions of everything

the rest of the class is doing - and a good coach will know how to guide them. Intensity is relative for every athlete in the gym, while range of motion and movement goals stay the same. Strength training is also critical for ageing adults because it helps prevent and reverse osteoporosis (brittle bones). Even minor slips and falls often result in broken bones in ageing men and women with low bone density. Lifting heavy objects increases that bone density and reduces risk of injury. Group fitness classes may or may not be appropriate for all ageing adults. At Activate, we have several 55-plus-yearold athletes, and they do great in regular classes. Others choose to start with private sessions, and more still opt for our very successful Activate Masters programme. The point is that they get or remain active. I am not an elite athlete. I am not going to win any competitions or break any records. I joke about it all the time, but that’s not why I work out. I work out every day so that I can stay out of a nursing home and stay robust for the span of my lifetime. As the population of Ireland ages faster than the rest of the world (we will soon have one of the oldest populations in Europe), that is a noble enough goal for us all.

School Transport Scheme Q: Is my child eligible for the School Transport Scheme? A: If they are between four and 12-years-old and living 3.2 kilometres or more from a primary school, or 4.8 kilometres or more for post-primary, they may qualify for transport to school. The service is only provided where there are at least 10 eligible pupils in a distinct locality that can be economically serviced by a bus route. You do not have a legal entitlement to it. Q: Where will the bus pick up my child? A: Parents must bring their child to their nearest pick-up point. Generally, bus routes are arranged so that no pupil has more than 3.2 kilometres to travel to a pick-up point. Q: How much does it cost? A: Primary school children: €100 per pupil, but not more than €150 per family Post-primary school students: €350

Cobblestone Comfort By Nicky Barry For two long years I’ve sat alone, amongst the cobblestones, Out in Muckross courtyard, and wrote many poems. Reception had been locked up, because of the pandemic, And it was so peaceful, with little tourist traffic. Weeks turned slowly into months, and then months into years, And I tried to cycle out, every single day. Dudley and Eunice came and went, with their winter winds, But then springtime came along, and birds began to sing. All my life I’ve told myself, that nothing lasts forever, And sure enough in Holy Week, all my prayers were answered, For the place was opened up, and tourists wandered through, And the wagtails were delighted, with the crumbs they threw. The staff were all happy out, to be back for the season, And helped me with the crossword clues, that were not too easy. Daffodils were just wilting, but primroses stepped in, And soon there will be bluebells, growing in profusion. The roads had been re-surfaced, with no pothole blights, And Muckross looked like paradise, in the Easter light. The Jarveys all were smiling, as they did a roaring trade, And God was in his Heaven, proud of what he’d made!

A WEEKLY ROUND-UP OF NEWS • VIEWS FROM KERRY AND AROUND THE WORLD SUPPORT

INSPIRED BY DANNY CASEY

Fr Pat wins Kerry Association in Dublin 2022 Arts Award Fr Pat Ahern has been announced as the most recent recipient of the prestigious Kerry Association in Dublin Arts Award. The award sponsored by Kerry County Council is in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the promotion and development of artistic, cultural and literary tradition of his native county both nationally and internationally. A native of Moyvane, Fr Pat was immersed in traditional Irish music from a young age. Having studied for the priesthood, he became a curate at St John’s in Tralee in 1957. He founded the St John’s Gregorian Choir and was given responsibility for liturgical music in the diocese. While in Tralee he produced and directed a number of liturgical pageants and was involved in the Scoraíocht movement in Comhaltas that led, in part, to the establishment of Siamsóirí na Ríochta in 1968. The Siamsóirí pioneered a form of folk theatre that presented Irish folk customs on stage through music, song and dance. The Bishop of Kerry decided to send the young priest to UCC to study a B.Mus degree under Professor Fleischmann, who was a great inspiration to Fr Pat. Graduating with a music degree from UCC in 1962, Fr Pat joined the Catholic Communications Centre in Dublin and studied TV and radio production. He produced a weekly series called “Network” for RTE Radio. Recalled to Kerry in 1973, he was released

from parish work to devote himself to his work on folk theatre. His musical and theatrical work in the early years was channelled into the establishment of Siamsa Tíre, the national folk theatre of Ireland. Keelin Kissane, Chairperson of the Kerry Association in Dublin said “Fr Pat has had an inspirational impact both in Kerry and internationally. He has transferred the magic and music and mystery of Kerry to the stage and projected it magnificently to ever appreciating audiences both at home and throughout the world. He has been a great Ambassador for Kerry. Ciarraíoch go smior is ea Father Pat. Tá sé bródúil as a shinsear agus as a chondae agus as gach a bhaineann le dúchas na Ríochta. He has given much to Kerry. This

award is a fitting testimony to his creative endeavours on behalf of his county and country throughout his lifetime." Since then Siamsa Tire has gone from strength to strength, culminating in the opening of its new building on the edge of Tralee Town Park in 1991. Fr Pat was artistic director there until 1997. Other remarkable achievements included the first American tour where Siamsa sold out in Broadway in 1976, the many other tours that followed, the performance for the then Pope John Paul II at Limerick in 1979, for the Queen of the Netherlands, for the King and Queen of Sweden and in response to a personal invitation from Bob Hawke, the performance at the Australian Bicentennial celebrations in 1987.

A 60-year-old McDonald's meal - complete with half-eaten fries was found tucked inside the wall of an American home last week. While renovating his bathroom a man called Rob, who posted his discovery on Reddit, revealed the unusual find. The 59-year-old Illinois home was due for an upgrade when he found the meal in the plaster "wrapped up in an old rag", with the vintage packaging and said he was relieved that it was something "more sinister". He lives close to one of the original McDonald's locations in Crystal Lake which also opened the same year the house was built. "When we unwrapped it and found the old McDonald's bag and fries we were very surprised and grateful that is all we found hidden." He added that there "was no smell and surprisingly no trace of mice".

Adventurers to climb four mountains in 24 hours A gruelling attempt to climb the highest peak in each of Ireland’s four provinces in 24 hours will finish on top of Carrauntoohil in June.

MOUNTAINS TO CLIMB: Donegal mountaineers Fiona McGinley, Paddy Robinson, Damien Rodgers, Sharon Ward, Cathal McGettigan and Don Pearson are preparing to climb the highest mountains in each of the four provinces of Ireland.

A group of six Donegal-based mountaineers will attempt the challenge on June 25 and 26. They are raising money for the Garda supported Little Blue Heroes charity. Their adventure will begin on the 850m Slieve Donard in County Down at 3pm on Saturday June 25. Within 24 hours they hope to be at the summit of Ireland’s highest mountain

(1038m), just outside Killarney, after also tackling Lugnaquilla in Wicklow (925m) and the 814m Mweelrea in Mayo. “We have a support mini bus that will be waiting for us when we come down off each mountain to take us to the base of the next one. I think Mweelrea will be the hardest as we will have to climb that in the dark,” climber Paddy Robinson told the Killarney Advertiser. “But we can look forward to a sleep in the bus on the long drive to Kerry after that.” To donate go to: www.idonate.ie/ big4in24

Ardfert designer joins RuPaul's Drag Race A north Kerry man who has been making a name for himself as a fashion designer across the globe is to appear on UK TV with next week.

CAMINO: A group of 48 are in Portugal to bike and hike the Camino into Santiago de Compostela in Spain to fundraise for the Irish Community Air Ambulance.

Air Ambulance goes international with Camino fundraiser The first overseas event for the Irish Community Air Ambulance is set to exceed its fundraising goal. A group of 48 supporters has arrived in Portugal to bike and hike the Camino into Santiago de Compostela in Spain.

The Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) is Ireland’s only charity Air Ambulance and works in partnership with the National Ambulance Service. The helicopter is based in Rathcool, Co Cork with critical care teams on the ground in Dublin, Mayo and Donegal. The organisation set a fundraising target of €50,000 for the week-long event which has already been surpassed. Participants from Kerry, Cork, Waterford, Limerick, Mayo, Galway, Dublin, Wicklow and Tyrone are taking on a 130km walk or 338km cycle along the Portuguese Coastal Route. George Blackshields from Cork City has opted for the cycle and has raised almost €6,000 so far. He has first-hand experience of the charity “We were on holiday in Kerry in June 2020, spending the day at the beach with family when my wife collapsed," he said.

"There was a huge emergency response. It was a relief to hear from the ambulance paramedics that the helicopter was on its way, I knew that it would be important to get Jean to hospital quickly. The crew did everything they possibly could to bring Jean back but sadly it didn’t work out for her. We really appreciate the efforts they took. The Irish Community Air Ambulance is badly needed, it’s an essential service especially in rural parts of the country. I cycle regularly and the Camino is another adventure for me and I’m so grateful to everyone who has donated over the last few months.” The walking group began in Oia on Monday and are walking 130km to Santiago de Compostela along the coast around the Vigo estuary. Walkers are staying in the beautiful coastal cities of Baiona and Vigo before rejoining the traditional Camino Portuguese from Redondela to Santiago de Compostela. The cycling group began their 338km route from Aveiro in Portugal, following the road less travelled to Santiago de Compostela. They are cycling along some of the most amazing sandy beaches of North Portugal and Spain, such as those near Povoa de Varzim.

This coming Monday, Colin Horgan from Ardfert will appear with RuPaul's Drag Race UK Vs World Winner Blu Hydrangea on BBC Three’s new show ‘Stitch Please’ at 8.30pm and on BBC Northern Ireland One on May 4 at 10.45pm. "I am absolutely buzzing to be joining RuPaul's Drag Race UK Vs World Winner Blu Hydrangea next Monday," he said. 'Stitch Please' invites two stitching crazy contestants to be crowned Stitch Per-

GARDENMAGIC Kerry man takes

Gardening - By Debby Looney

Debby is available for advice and garden consultations, just call 086 6088156 or email barnhillky@gmail.com

Lets talk about growth spurts and planting pots It seems that the longer the days get, the bigger the list of jobs in the garden gets!

keep an eye on the weather forecast and cover any annuals with garden fleece, or even some hessian.

Everything, including weeds, is experiencing a growth spurt. While, in principle, I am against using pesticides and herbicides, sometimes exceptions can be made for example, the gravel drive! There are a few products available which prevent regrowth, Weedol ‘Pathclear’, ‘Premazor’ and Resolva granular ‘Weed preventer’, all have enzymes which prevent seeds from germinating, giving you at least six months control. Conifers always look their best at this time of year, especially those with brightly coloured shoots such as Picea 'Daisy’s White'. Top of the list, for me, has to be Abies koreana, a beautifully shaped conifer, with bright green new growth and bright purpley-blue cones. It is a slow grower and suitable for medium sized gardens as a specimen. Herbaceous plants are all making an appearance, and Candelabra Primulas are spectacular now, with their tall spikes of multi-coloured flowers. They grow particularly well in moist shady areas of the garden, and they are slug resistant. For some weeks now bedding plants have been available, but to my mind it has been too early to plant them out. However, with the month turning and the weather heating up, it is safe enough to start planting out the bedding. Do

There is a fantastic range of pots available to the gardener, ranging from enormous glazed pots, to very affordable high quality plastic ones. My favourites are still the basic terracotta pot, as I love the way they age. There are pots to suit every situation, from square fibreglass ones in which topiary looks stunning to brightly coloured stackable pots. When planting pots, we have always been told to put some drainage in the bottom, such as gravel. This works quite well, but the new way of thinking is to omit any drainage. When water draining through the pot suddenly finds itself with nothing to cling to, that is, when it hits the “drainage”, it actually stops moving downward, and in a bizarre way causes waterlogging! So, save yourself the trouble, and put your compost straight in! Mix in some water retaining gel, and slow release fertiliser, then water the pot before planting. The gel will swell so you can gauge whether you have put in enough compost. As a rule of thumb, I find three patio plants such as surfinias or bacopas, in a 14 inch basket is plenty. Fill in any gaps with trailing lobelia, or other bedding in trays. If you put too much into a basket or pot, the result will be some of the plants dying due to lack of space!

on epic 420km in aid of two charities

A three day 420km challenge from one side of the country to the other from today (Friday) will be a major undertaking for one south Kerry man. Steve Boyle, a native of Cahersiveen, will cycle from Donegal to Glenbeigh to raise funds for The Alzheimer Society of Ireland and Crumlin’s Children’s Hospital. Steve, currently working in Newbridge, Co. Kildare aims to cycle and run the route over the three days from finishing on Sunday. He departed Donegal town this morning at 8am and hopes to be in Claremorris Co. Mayo no later than 6pm. Day two (Saturday) will see him leaving Claremorris early in the morning and travelling towards his next destination in Bunratty Co. Clare. His final day on Sunday will see him leaving Bunratty at 7am for his final destination of Glenbeigh. “My reason for doing this event for The Alzheimer Society of Ireland is simple," Steve said. "Having seen friends and family affected by dementia and watched people I love lose their lifetime memories over time and the lasting effect it can have on family and friends, I wanted to do something worthwhile.” While training has been very enjoyable on the Kerry and Kildare roads, it has also had challenges. However, Steve's support has been brilliant and has giv-

Successful debut weekend for Headford racer Killarney’s newest motorcycle racer Stephen Heelan made his race debut at Mondello Park over the weekend. Originally from Knocknagree in County Cork, Stephen is currently living in Knockanes, Headford.Heelan will contest the Supersport Cup class within the Dunlop Masters Irish Superbike Championship on his Kawasaki ZX6R. Prior to last weekend he only ever took part in non-competitive track days. “I have been doing track days here and in Australia but only got the chance to go racing this year,” he said. Over three races at the Kildare track last weekend he finished in sixth, seventh and eighth place and ahead of some more-experienced racers. “I had a great weekend competing in my first ever race and I am delighted with the results,” he added. Heelan is the only Killarney-based racer committed to the Irish championship this season. Kevin Coyne has taken a year out to concentrate on his college studies, Frank Doherty has sold his race bike to fund other interests and sidecar racer Siobhan Ardener is struggling to raise sponsorship to fund her season. The next round of the Dunlop Masters Irish Superbike Championship will take place on the weekend of May 21 and 22 at Mondello Park

Busy weekend as rally returns With the International Rally of the Lakes set to return to Killarney this weekend for the first time in three years, the town will be exceptionally busy. Event organisers say that the 41st edition will attract tens of thousands of spectators for what is sure to be a festival-like atmosphere over the May Bank Holiday Weekend. “Preparations for the rally are now at the advanced stage and we cannot wait to welcome crews and spectators to the town next weekend,” Darren McCormick, Clerk of the Course, said. “We are mindful of the residents of the town so we ask everyone who comes to Killarney to leave the town the way you found it, bring your litter home and ‘Keep the Race in its Place’.’’ The rally kicks off on Friday evening, with a ceremonial start ramp on Main Street. The first car is due over the ramp at 7pm but the street will be closed to ordinary traffic from around 6pm. The rally proper starts Saturday in the late morning, with runs over stages near Kilsarcon, Banard and Gortnagane, before a service halt at the Liebherr Container Cranes factory in Fossa. Drivers will tackle those three stages in the afternoon. Heavy traffic can be ex-

pected in Kilcummin, Scartaglin, Gneeveguilla, Rathmore and Barraduff areas on Saturday. The bypass and the Fossa area will be very busy too. After an overnight halt in Killarney, competitors will have the daunting task of Molls Gap and Ballaghbeama to negotiate in the morning, each stage being run twice. The afternoon will see the crews fight for the rally win on Shanera and Caragh Lake, where overall and class winners will be crowned Killarney’s champions. Traffic on Sunday will be busy in the Muckross, Glencar, Beaufort and the Killorglin areas. The Muckross Road will remain busy on Sunday afternoon as crews make their way to Rally HQ, The Gleneagle Hotel for a champagne celebration on the finish ramp before a trophy presentation later on that evening at the same venue. The rally has a range of title sponsors for the 2022 event and without their generous support, there would be no rally. Rentokil Initial, Aherns.ie Motorgroup, The Gleneagle Hotel and OSI have all

joined forces to ensure the rally remains viable in what is a difficult return to action for both rallying and the businesses themselves following the pandemic. Last week, President of the Killarney Chamber of Commerce, Niall Kelleher, welcomed the return of the rally, stating

that the rally is worth upwards of €10 million to the local economy. He said the rally is “right up there” with other major events for the town. Local businesses can expect a major windfall from the event and hotel rooms are at a premium for the “must attend” event said Mr Kelleher.

O'Sullivan gets late call up to Rally of the Lakes alongside third seed Muckross co-driver Noel O’Sullivan has secured a late drive with one of the Rally of the Lakes hot favourites. O’Sullivan has enjoyed an international career in recent years, only last weekend he won the opening round of the British Rally Championship alongside Osian Pryce in a Volkswagen Polo. Indeed, the pair finished runner-up in last year’s BRC. Prior to that O’Sullivan was on the World Rally Championship trail with Northern Ireland’s Jon Armstrong. As a result one of the area’s top co-drivers has not competed on his home event since 2017 when he finished fourth along-

side Sam Moffett in a Ford Fiesta. That will change on Saturday morning. He has been signed up by Callum Devine, the third seed for the event. Devine finished third overall in Killarney the last time the event ran in 2019 in a Ford Fiesta. This time they will drive a similar Polo to the one O’Sullivan competes in on BRC rounds. “It is so long I will need a map to get around,” he joked. “Anyone in the top four of five can win this – who knows? I am just excited to get a chance to compete at home. It’s been a while. Shane Buckley is another local co-driver in the top ten. He is alongside Daniel Cronin in another Polo.

BACK ON HOME SOIL: Noel O'Sullivan won the opening round fo the British Rally Championship alongside Osian Pryce last weekend. He is set to contest the Rally of the Lakes for the first time since 2017 this weekend.

WINNER: Rob Duggan and co-driver Get Conay, pictured with Rentokil Initial MD Mick O'Mahony at last November's Killarney Historic Rally, are the top seeds for the Rally of the Lakes National Rally. Photo: Eamonn Keogh

Duggan the man to watch in National rally Aghadoe’s Rob Duggan is the top seed for modified section of the Rally of the Lakes. He finished second on the recent West Cork Rally but, for sure, Duggan’s Class 14 Ford Escort Mk2 will set a very high standard on his home event. He also won the modified section of the Killarney Historic Rally in November and much of Sunday's route follows the same path as the winter rally. Fellow Killarney man Colin O’Donoghue will aim to keep up with his Escort rival. O’Donoghue’s Killarney Historic Rally challenge came to an unfortunate end last November, he’ll be hoping to keep

more pressure on Duggan this time. Irish Tarmac Modified frontrunner, from Wexford, James Stafford looks set to bring his Darrian to the Rally of the Lakes for the first time in 14 years. Other locals to look out for include Conor Murphy, Aidan Buckley, Tadhg O'Sullivan, Kevin O'Sullivan, Charlie Hickey and Denis Hickey in a fleet of well-prepared Escorts. Charlie’s brother John will drive his very unusual four-wheel-drive Escort. Colin’s father Kevin wheels out his lovely BMW M3. The Duggan family are out in force too, Rob’s brother Andrew will be co-driven by their sister Tara in another Ford Escort.

Who will replace Breen and Nagle as Rally of the Lakes champions? The race to become Craig Breen and Paul Nagle’s Irish Tarmac Rally Championship successors hots up this week. | By Adam Hall RallyInsight Leading contenders Josh Moffett and Andy Hayes will renew their rivalry with Alastair Fisher and Gordon Noble on Killarney’s Rally of the Lakes. Moffett and Hayes looked set to go three from three in ITRC before a final day fightback gave Fisher and Noble their first Circuit of Ireland victory just over a week ago. Bogey time uncertainty provided an element of controversy to the intense rally battle. Nobody can deny Fisher of his four stage wins in a row to claim his Circuit success but there is no doubt Moffett will have extra motivation heading to Killarney. Moffett’s runner-up finish in the County Antrim event remains his only nonwin this year. Victory on last Sunday’s

Monaghan Stages Rally was his fifth of the year. Killarney’s Rally of the Lakes will be an altogether different prospect for the Monaghan driver. A sixth-placed finish four years ago is Moffett’s highest finish on the demanding rally. He retired from seventh on Killarney’s most recent 2019 running. The mix of fast, wide, and flowing roads to bump-ridden twists and turns is the ultimate Irish Tarmac test for every crew. If Moffett can master this one in his Hyundai, he’ll be a hard man to catch at the front of the Irish Tarmac standings. Fisher will be hoping to turn his second behind Breen in 2019 to a first this time around. Indeed, if that happens his runner-up championship finish three years ago looks more likely to become one place better this year.

An emotional Paul Nagle celebrates his win on the 2019 Rally of the Lakes with his driver Craig Breen. He became the first Killarney resident the win the rally. The wining crew are flanked by the Ford Fiesta R5 that they steered to victory and the Ford Cortina ‘ROAD CLOSED’ car made famous by Paul’s late father Maurice who was a stalwart of the Killarney and District Motor Club. Photo Damien Switzer

Yes, it’s a case of ifs and buts… but isn’t it fantastic to have such anticipation heading to the Irish Tarmac’s fourth round of the season. Seeded third, Callum Devine and Noel O’Sullivan (see separate story) could well be good value to achieve their first win of the year. Devine found his R5 form in Killarney three years ago, going “fastest up the Gap” in a head-turning performance. Devine was one driver to notice the suspension tweaks Breen and Nagle made to their Fiesta between Killarney’s contrasting stages in 2019. After finally getting his hands on a Volkswagen Polo R5 the soon-to-be 28-year-old will be aiming for an early birthday present. He’ll be expecting nothing short of top points this weekend. Meirion Evans, Cathan McCourt, Jonny Greer, and Daniel Cronin will continue to

provide healthy competition behind the main contenders. Evans suffered his first disappointment of the season earlier in April. He knocked a wheel off his Polo on the Circuit’s final day, just when he thought he had recaptured his usual front-end form. Declan Boyle, David Guest, and Owen Murphy complete a well-rounded top ten ready to tackle the Lakes. Killarney’s jam-packed entry includes Historic and Junior entries brimming with class and talent. Six stages on Saturday precede a full-on Sunday. The final day features four loops with two stages in each, including Moll’s Gap and Ballaghbeama. Ireland has enjoyed a few sensational rallies already this year but this could very well be the best yet.

SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL Take note of important

Beauty - By Jill O'Donoghue

Jill is available for advice and beauty consultations, at Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio. Call 064 6632966

Why men should have a pampering pedicure Having a pedicure is the most relaxing and effective way to maintain foot hygiene and keep them clean and fresh. Most men think that having a pedicure is too girly or not a manly thing to do. It's time to change your mindset. Paying attention to how you look and looking after your nails or any type of grooming rituals isn't going to dent your masculinity, or make you less of a man. Going for a pedicure is a must as it helps to prevent athletes' foot, fungal infection, smelly feet, ingrown toe nails, sore, tired feet, hard, rough skin, and thickened toenails. Pedicures are a therapeutic treatment for the feet, they are done to remove dead skin, soften your feet, remove excess cuticles, cut and shape nails correctly with the correct implements which help make it painless. The deluxe pedicure chair with built-in back massager can help relax even the most nervous of clients. It's in a private location so no one can see you, helping to take the tension out of showing your feet to someone for the first time. The

jacuzzi jets are powerful enough to help soften the toughest of feet. With summer in the door, it's a great time to get the feet sorted out for sandal season and trips to the swimming pool. I understand some men feel conflicted about getting pedicures since beauty treatments have always been associated with women. Things have changed, getting pedicures or manicures is not always about beauty but sometimes about hygiene. We use a drill which the men love to see as it makes it feel a bit more manly, also we assure men they don't have to paint their nails, unless they want too of course! From personal experience, having a pedicure or manicure is a great way to relax your muscles and relieve stress. Both are so therapeutic and give you the feeling of being pampered. You just sit back and relax without the stresses of the world on your shoulders. Make sure you book an appointment for a relaxing, yet essential experience, you will thank me later. For more information or to book an appointment call Jill on 064 6632966.

CAO deadlines and dates

The month of May is a very important one for CAO applicants as there are some key deadlines and dates coming up. Firstly, any applicants who want to apply to CAO 2022 and haven’t already done so, must apply before the Late Application deadline which is on May 1 at 5pm. The fee for late applications is €60 and some restrictions do apply at this stage. For example, in general courses which are categorised as ‘restricted’ cannot be added now and some Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) may not consider late applications for certain categories of applicant such as mature applicants, and those presenting qualifications other than recently taken EU school-leaving exams. Make sure to check the relevant HEI website before applying. Change of Mind Facility From May 5 at 12pm the CAO Change of Mind facility opens to allow applicants to make changes to course choices. This can be done up to July 1 at 5pm. You can make changes on both lists – Level 8 and Level 7/6. The two lists are completely separate in your application and you have the option to include up to 10 choices on both. You can take out, add in or change the order of the courses. Some restrictions do apply. There is no charge for the Change of Mind facility and if you make a change online, an acknowledgement is sent to the email address used at the application stage. You can also log on to www.cao.ie/myapplication to check the application at any time. Statement of Application Record By the end of May all applicants will receive a Statement of Application Record by email from CAO. You will be asked to log into your CAO account and verify that all of your information is recorded

correctly. This includes your personal details, qualifications and assessment section which includes examination and language exemption information as well as your course choices. If there are any omissions or errors you must inform CAO immediately as this could have consequences at offer stage and may lead to a loss of a college place. Don’t assume that your examination number and information is correct, check them carefully. You will then be asked to confirm that all your account information is correct. If you have not received the Statement of Application Record email by June 1, contact the CAO immediately via the Contact section of the website. Video guides to the Change of Mind and the Statement of Application Record are available on www.cao.ie.

Our lives go on without ye But nothing is the same We have to hide our heartache When someone speaks your names.

I watched you suffer, I saw you die But all I could do was sit close by You went away, we had to part God eased your pain but broke my heart.

When God held out his precious hands To take you from your pain You stretched your weary hand right back As he softly called your name.

Sad are the hearts that love ye Silent are the tears that fall Living without ye is the hardest part of all.

“Come home with me”, he gently said “Your pain will leave you soon Just close your eyes and take my hand And we’ll quietly leave the room”.

Kerry U20s come good in tense Munster final

| By Adam Moynihan

Kingdom secure title No. 29 after strong second-half showing After a score-shy first half that yielded just three points, the Kerry U20s eventually burst into life to overcome the challenge of Cork in Monday night’s Munster final in Tralee. A beautifully worked team goal finished off by centre forward Thomas O’Donnell in the 32nd minute kickstarted a blistering run that left Cork with a mountain to climb. Points by substitutes Jordan Kissane, Gearóid Hassett and Jack O’Connor (two apiece) finished the job as Declan O’Sullivan’s side safely secured their passage to an All-Ireland semi-final against Tyrone with seven points to spare. Speaking to this journalist on The Kerry Football Podcast, Kerry selector Seán O’Sullivan praised his panel for overcom-

ing their initial bout of nervousness. “Definitely the first half was one to forget for both sides,” O’Sullivan said. “A lot of people said that it was scrappy and I suppose it was, but you have to take a lot of things into account. It was a really big game for both teams, particularly for our lads in front of their home crowd. The game was live on TG4 as well. It was a huge game in their young careers. “There were a lot of errors, particularly in the forwards. When you look at the half-time score (3-3)… If you hadn’t seen any of the game, you’d think it was de-

fensive. I don’t think it was. There were chances created on both sides. I really just think it came down to a lot of nerves. “There wasn’t a whole pile of panic in our dressing room. We had seen plenty of the ball and we were doing a lot of things right. It was just about throwing off the shackles and the nerves and really concentrating on taking our scores. The goal was huge for us, a fantastic move, which came directly after a Cork point. “We got a huge impact from all our subs. I know the three lads who came on and got the scores made all the headlines – and their six points were probably the winning of the game - but we also got great performances from Adam Curran and Tom Doyle.” When this publication was going to print,

Kerry were still awaiting confirmation on when and where their All-Ireland semi-final will be played. Although the semis had been fixed for the weekend of May 7/8, O’Sullivan is hoping that their match won’t clash with the seniors’ Munster semi-final against Cork on the Saturday. “We know it’s very difficult for the fixtures committee of the GAA to keep everyone happy. But obviously with the Kerry seniors out that evening, we’d be hoping that they’d try and slot us in on the Sunday to give people a chance to go to both games. If they put us on the same day, you’d be thinking that they’d put us on early to allow people get down to Páirc Uí Rinn. But it’s up in the air at the moment.”

Kerry v Cork confirmed for Páirc Uí Rinn

After weeks of speculation, the upcoming Munster semi-final between Cork and Kerry has finally been confirmed for Páirc Uí Rinn in Cork. The match will take place next Saturday, May 7 at 6pm, with the ladies semi-final between Kerry and Tipperary throwing in at 3.30pm at the same venue. The men’s match had initially been fixed for Páirc Uí Rinn months ago (Páirc Uí Chaoimh is currently unavailable due to a series of Ed Sheeran concerts) but concerns over the relatively small capacity at Cork’s alternate home ground prompted Munster GAA to switch it to Killarney’s Fitzgerald Stadium. This, in turn, led the Cork footballers to release a statement saying they would not be playing the game “in any other venue” besides Páirc Uí Rinn. The saga appeared to have reached an impasse until Friday last when Kerry GAA stepped in to declare that they were “acceding” to Cork’s request to change the venue back to Páirc Uí Rinn. “Kerry County Board acknowledges the close relationship that exists between both boards, the importance of protecting the integrity of the Munster Senior Football Championship and the priority now for the team management and players to prepare for the game without further distraction,” a statement read. Kerry GAA also clarified that moving forward the longstanding home and away arrangement with Cork will only apply

to the Fitzgerald Stadium and Páirc Uí Chaoimh. This means that if Páirc Uí Chaoimh is unavailable for future Cork v Kerry championship games in 2023 and beyond, Páirc Uí Rinn will not be considered a suitable alternative. Much to the relief of all parties, Munster GAA’s statement on Monday night put the bothersome matter to bed. A full house of around 11,000 is expected at the cosy Ballintemple stadium. The provincial council revealed that tickets will only be on sale through the county boards. All Cork and Kerry season ticket holders will be entitled to a ticket. With regards to on-pitch matters, Cork’s chances were dealt a blow this past week with the news that influential midfielder Ian Maguire is set to miss the game with a fractured hand. After making do without several injured players during their successful league campaign, Kerry are expected to be much closer to full strength for their trip to Cork, although the status of defenders Mike Breen and Dan O’Donoghue remains uncertain.

The Kingdom secured the league title with victory over Armagh in Croke Park earlier this month and now Kayleigh Cronin, Cáit Lynch, Aishling O’Connell, Lorraine Scanlon, Anna Galvin and Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh have been rewarded for their efforts via their inclusion in the Division 2 dream team. Six of the beaten finalists also made the selection. Anna Carr, Grace Ferguson, Lauren McConville, Catherine Marley and the Mackin sisters, Bláithín and Aimee, all made the cut. Monaghan are represented by Rosemary Courtney and Muireann Atkinson, and Laois forward Mo Nerney rounds off the 15. In Division 1, Meath’s first ever Division 1 title led to seven of their players making the top-flight Team of the League.

Beaten finalists Donegal have four players honoured, 2021 winners Dublin have three players in the team, while there’s one player from Mayo on the selection. There are three survivors from the 2021 Lidl NFL Division 1 Team of the League named again in 2022, with Donegal pair Evelyn McGinley and Karen Guthrie honoured along with Dublin’s Hannah Tyrrell. Joining McGinley and Guthrie on the team from Donegal are Nicole McLaughlin and team captain Niamh McLaughlin, while Leah Caffrey and Orlagh Nolan are the other Dublin players acknowledged. Division 3 and 4 champions Roscommon and Offaly have six player each on their respective 15s. The Kerry players will collect their awards next Friday evening, May 6 at a ceremony in Croke Park.

ON THE BALL: The Killarney U16s in action in the Millo O'Meara Cup in Aghadoe. The hosts emerged victorious to add another trophy to their collection. The team also won the Munster League and Cup this season.

Killarney win inaugural Millo O’Meara Cup The Killarney U16 girls have secured their third trophy of a record-breaking year by winning the inaugural Millo O’Meara Perpetual Cup. This particular triumph was extra special as Millo had coached many of these girls prior to his passing from motor neurone disease.

Seven Killarney players were unavailable having lined out with the Munster U16s in the Interprovincial Championship in Dublin the day before so the hosts were up against it, but they managed to utilise their deep squad to emerge victorious. Teams from Shannon, Ballincollig and Tralee came to Aghadoe for the 10-a-side competition and the Killarney girls were the only unbeaten side in the group stages. This impressive record

saw them qualify for the final versus Ballincollig. In an well-contested final, Ballincollig went into an early 10-0 lead and played some fantastic rugby in the process. The Killarney girls needed to respond and they did so in breathtaking fashion, scoring four unanswered tries. Two of the tries were notched by the outstanding skipper Joanne O’Keefe, and Ali O’Donoghue added another following a run that started in her own 22. Beaufort girl Kate Mangan then touched down for the final try, leaving the score at the end at Killarney 26-10 Ballincollig. “Today was a real test of the depth of our squad who have worked so hard all year,” co-coach Diarmuid O’Malley reflected. “The quality of rugby they played in the final was simply phenom-

enal, playing the game the way it should be played. “Each one of the girls stepped up to the plate today and they all contributed hugely to the win. There is an unbelievable spirit in the squad and when the girls went down to two early tries none of the girls panicked. They stuck to the process on how they have played all year and this is something that gives myself and our other co-coach Josh Whelan huge satisfaction. They are playing heads up rugby, keeping the ball alive at all times with a smile on their faces. “These are a unique group of girls who will keep getting better and better because they are prepared to work hard. They have the right attitude to learn and always looking to get better and better.” Liam Murphy, one of the organisers of

the tournament alongside Anne Gabbett and Fiona Landers, said it had been a “huge day” for the club. “We wanted to recognise all the work Millo had put in with these girls in their earlier years,” Liam said. “The fact that Killarney ended up winning the tournament was just the icing on the cake. “All the profits from today went to the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association. To have Millo’s family here today was very special and I know there is man in heaven looking down with a big smile on his face with the quality of rugby these young girls played. “A special mention to all parents, kids and club members who helped out to make today such a superb day. This is an event we will look to run each year in memory of a great rugby man.”

Breen and Nagle now third in World Rally Championship Craig Breen and Paul Nagle’s fourth place on last weekend’s Croatia Rally means they are now third in the World Rally Championship. Based in the Croatian capital of Zagreb, the third round of the World Rally Championship was one of the most exciting and challenging events for years. Heavy rain and low temperatures created some exceptional road conditions - it was a challenge to make the finish, never mind get a result. By the end of Saturday, Breen and Nagle were in third place after the duo expertly navigated the poor visibility and very wet roads to make it through the stages. In fact, they made it through with no issues, and headed into the final day with a podium in sight, but their gap to fourth place had been cut down to 4.9 seconds.

Unexpected heavy rain on the penultimate stage saw the crew’s tyre choice become a big disadvantage to the competition, seeing them lose over a minute-and-a-half to main rival Thierry Neuville. “Obviously the weather made it an incredibly difficult weekend, but we made it through,” said Breen. “For sure Paul and I learnt a lot, plus we managed to get some points in the power stage, and points for coming fourth. Unfortunately, a little mistake on the tyre choice on Sunday morning maybe ruled us out of a podium place, but apart from that we have to be satisfied.”

BRITISH RALLY CHAMPIONSHIP Two Killarney co-drivers engaged in an epic battle for victory in the opening

CROATIA: Paul Nagle and Craig Breen did well to finish the Croatia Rally given the extremely difficult conditions.

round of the British Rally Championship in Essex on Sunday. Noel O’Sullivan from Muckross was alongside Osian Pryce while Mikie Galvin was on co-driving duty for Keith Cronin – both crews were in near-identical Volkswagen Polo RC2s. Guided by co-driver Galvin, Cronin led

for much of the event having been fastest on two short spectator stages on Saturday evening and all four tests of Sunday’s opening loop. However, the four-time British champion was overhauled by last year’s championship runner-up, Pryce, on the 12th of the rally’s 14 stages to lose by just 5.4 seconds.

Golf classic in memory of hoops legend Connie St Paul’s will be swapping their basketballs for orbs of a smaller version when they host their golf classic in Beaufort Golf Club on Friday, May 20. With a thriving academy, both boys and girls, adult teams and of course the National League project to finance, the classic is a vital tool to help finance the running of the club. chairman of the Kerry Branch of the Irish Kidney Association and, having received a kidney donation himself, he also represented Ireland in golf at the World Trans-

plant Games in 2010 and 2017. The classic itself, which takes place at the picturesque and pristine Beaufort course, is open to teams of four for the great price of €250 and a much needed meal will be provided afterwards.
