WARRIORS: Ryan Dewhurst pictured with his mom Danielle O'Brien, Superintendent Flor Murphy alongside Garda Gillian Mac Eoin O'Donoghue and her daughter Ella O'Donoghue.

Birthday surprise for Killarney’s little warrior Miracle kids meet up almost five years later | By Michelle Crean Two little warriors from Killarney - who battled through complicated life threatening conditions in the same Dublin hospital in 2014 were reunited for the first time this week. Little Ryan Dewhurst (5), son of Danielle

O’Brien and Dan Dewhurst from Dromhall Park, was one of the longest ever patients in Crumlin Hospital at the time and became the poster boy for the Ronald McDonald House, after he was born with his bowels outside his body. He underwent nine serious operations – the first at just three days old. Little Ella O'Donoghue, who’ll be five in July is daughter of Garda Gillian Mac

Eoin O'Donoghue and Paul O'Donoghue. She also underwent a serious operation - open heart surgery at just nine weeks old. Their moms, both from Killarney, stayed in the Ronald McDonald House at the same time and formed a friendship during one of the most stressful times of their lives. However, last Saturday was magical

for Ryan, as he not only received a police bicycle for his fifth birthday - which he celebrated on Sunday – but brought it to Killarney Garda Station to have it checked over by local Gardai. And the smile and excitement on his face was just priceless, Gillian, who organised the day, explained. “He just adores the Gardai and everything to do with police work, he says he’s going to go patrolling on his new bike to catch bad guys but he will be sure to always wear his helmet when doing so,” Gillian told the Killarney Advertiser. She said it was great when Danielle got in contact last week to say that Ryan was Garda mad and wanted a road safety check on his bike. "It was so nice for the two children to get together again this week as they hadn’t met up since. We hope in time to come Ryan can look back at the photo of his fifth birthday in the Garda uniform when he’s passing out from Templemore as a real Garda.” Danielle added that Ryan is their little miracle as he almost died during one of his surgeries. “We found out when I was 23 weeks pregnant that his bowels were outside his body and it came as quite a shock. He was just three days old when he had his first surgery. He’s had nine surgeries in total. During an operation at eight weeks old he flat lined. He’s our little miracle.” Ryan is now doing well, she explained, as he had his last surgery last year and is thriving since. “He’s tough, nothing phases him.”

Calls to give senior citizens priority parking | By Michelle Crean Killarney man and local election hopeful Neily O’Connor is calling on the Council to give senior citizens priority when it comes to parking in Killarney town. Neily, a well-known entertainer, who is running for Fianna Fáil for the Killarney electoral area, says the provision of designated car park spaces will give older citizens easy access to all amenities, including post offices, banks, medical centres and all public offices within the town. “These measures will help our elderly in maintaining their independence while also sending out a strong signal to society that Killarney goes further towards valuing its senior citizens,” Neily told the Killarney Advertiser this week. “With our new vibrant culture, as a society we need to lead by example and

let our young people see we respect the needs and values of that generation.” He is also calling for a town parking app to be introduced so that drivers can eas-

ily locate free spaces within the town alleviating some of the congestion. “We continuously drive around the town looking for a car space and while

we're doing this we are actually adding to the volume of traffic and creating more congestion. We need a parking app so that we can just check our phone to see the available parking spaces and drive straight to it rather than driving around in circles.” The addition of strategically located real time parking screens would also help alleviate the present traffic congestion particularly during the summer season, he added. “The information would instantly inform locals and tourists as to the availability of car park spaces. With Killarney being a leading tourist destination visitors expect these facilities as the norm. I'm continuously meeting people when out canvassing saying to me they are not coming in to Killarney during the summer months because of the parking chaos - so urgent action is required now.”

Construction on the Killarney Micro Track to start in June | By Sean Moriarty

The Killarney Micro Track project will start construction in June thanks to the final piece of local Government funding being granted this week. Local councillor Niall Kelleher confirmed to the Killarney Advertiser on Wednesday that the project will receive €25,000 from Kerry County Council’s Strategic Sports Fund. However, project coordinators are still short €100,000 and are calling on the people and businesses of Killarney to row in behind them and help get it over the line. Coordinators have confirmed that the tendering process is now complete, a contractor has been appointed and that work on the site will start on June 24. “The government funding is now complete so we are going to have to borrow the final €100,000,” coordinator Jerry Griffin said. “One of the problems we faced with people is that they never knew if this was going to be built or not. Now that we have the tendering

process complete they will be able to see real progress. This project will benefit everyone in town, there are roughly 12,500 people in Killarney and if everyone gave a tenner we are there, if they only gave a fiver we are half-way there. That is why we are pushing with local fundraising and a GoFundMe page, for

one final push.” The micro track, also known South and East Kerry Community Rural Track project will be located at St Brendan’s College, and will benefit up to 2,000 students from nearby schools, athletic clubs, paralympic athletes, Special Olympics athletes and community

The announcement was made at the European Hotel Awards in Geneva earlier this week. Located on the shores of Lough Lein and framed by the McGillycuddy Reeks mountain range, ESPA at The Europe is set in one of Ireland’s most spectacular

groups. Supporters of the project can be seen around Killarney every Monday and Wednesday night. The walking group is aiming to walk 1,000kms over a series of short walks to raise funds and awareness. Mr Griffin praised the efforts of local politicians like Kerry TD and Minister of State for Tourism and Sport, Brendan Griffin, Cllr John Sheahan and Cllr Niall Kelleher for their help in securing funds for the track. The GoFundMe page can be found online by searching for GoFundme: Killarney Micro Track.

Inspirational chef wins Local Food Hero award | By Michelle Crean One inspirational chef has won a Local Food Hero award at the Irish Restaurant Awards. Chad Byrne, Head Chef at The Brehon Hotel, won the Kerry award and the All-Munster award last week in the Strand Hotel Limerick, for his Chef Collab initiative which encourages and mentors

aspiring young chefs. He will now be going to the All-Ireland Restaurant Association of Ireland (RAI) awards in Dublin this May. “The award was on behalf of the work I do in the food industry promoting young chefs, with a popup venture called Chef Collab, this is a side line to my job at The Brehon Hotel, who have been very supportive,” Chad told the Killarney Advertiser this week. “Just two weeks ago we did an All-Ireland event for the Irish Hotel Federation at the Gleneagle with local junior chefs from Killarney been mentored.” At Chef Collab we pair commis chefs just starting out and eager to improve with the most elite chefs in the country and overseas, he explained. “Each junior chef goes away to work with his or her mentor for a few days to learn and design a course that they will use for the Chef Collab pop up event. The events highlight talented chefs of the future and all the good aspects of our industry. We keep the events as close to cost price as possible, keeping it accessible for all. We also try to incorporate as many local and indigenous suppliers as possible making it a very holistic approach to food.” The next Chef Collab event takes place in Killarney on May 26, he added. “Look online for tickets as they usually go within a few hours of release.

Sadness at the passing of popular Franciscan Father Tributes have been paid to Fr Colm ‘Chris’ Connolly OFM, a popular member of the local Franciscan order, who died on Monday of this week.

Volunteers plan to have Killarney looking good! The clocks are going forward this weekend - which signals the beginning of the Wednesday Clean Ups – starting back this coming Wednesday evening. | By Michelle Crean Volunteers are more than welcome to join the Killarney Looking Good group at 7pm at Variety Sounds, College Street, to take part in a one hour litter picking drive. It’s the start of their campaign to clean up the town’s streets ahead of the national Tidy Towns competition later this summer, explained chairperson Yvonne Quill. “The Killarney Looking Good committee are looking forward to welcoming back our existing volunteers and we hope to see some new volunteers taking part,” she said. “All our volunteers will be provided with bags, gloves etc., to help them with the clean ups.” The contribution that the volunteers make on a Wednesday evening is very visible in the town and surrounding ar-

eas, she added. “This year, we will be working around the town centre, streets, lanes etc. When necessary we may also need to move further out to the approach roads. Our work includes litter picking, weeding, painting and general maintenance where necessary.” She explained that the Killarney Looking Good Committee are pulling out all the stops this year in an effort to increase their marks and maintain the high standards that they have achieved to date. “The town increased by six points in 2018 to 334 marks and we strive to improve on this again in 2019. The support of the community and businesses is essential to our success and we are very grateful to them for all their support throughout the years. We hope you will come along and join us Wednesday evening.”

Fr Connolly served the people of Killarney for the last 26 years and was described by colleagues as “a beloved institution in the town”. He was born Colm in Violet Hill, Drumconrath County Meath, but was affectionately known as Fr Chris on the streets of Killarney. Retired teacher Maureen O’Reilly from St Anne’s Road has a life-long connection with the Franciscan Order in Killarney. Her late brother David was a member of the order and she was a close friend of Fr Chris. “As a young man in his 70s he walked around town, calling on and praying with the sick and housebound,” she said. “He visited the hospitals when not on duty in the Friary. Fr Chris was always happy and smiling even though he was going through much personal pain and illness himself. He loved jokes. “Fr Chris was a deeply spiritual man. Killarney will be the poorer for his passing. Beannacht Dé go raibh a anam.” Chris joined the Franciscans in 1955, made his First Profession in 1956 and

was ordained a priest in 1963. He served in the Irish Franciscan Mission in Zimbabwe for many years. Returning to Ireland in 1984, he ministered first in Waterford, and moved to the local friary in Killarney in 1993. He will missed by his Confreres in the Franciscan Friary, his brother PJ, sisterin-law Nora, nieces Eithne, Maeve, Aoife, Sinead and Fiona, grand-nephews, cousins and his many friends. Requiem Mass will be celebrated at noon today (Friday), followed by burial in the Friary graveyard.

Dan secures three silver medals A young Killarney chef won three medals at the Chef Ireland – The Irish Culinary Championships in the RDS recently. Dan Moynihan, who works at The Brehon Hotel, won silver in three different categories in what industry experts describe as the biggest platform for young chefs in the country.

Dan from Pinewood Estate, presented a duck dish, a vegan dish and a mystery fish basket. “There was lot of pressure,” he said. “I did not know the type of fish until the very last minute. I entered a few years ago and finished third so this was redemption- a clean sweep of silver. It was a great experience and I gained so much knowledge.” Dan Moynihan from Pinewood Estate has won three silver medals at the recent CATEX exhibition in the RDS Dublin. Picture: Michelle Crean

VOLUNTEER: Leanne Cronin from Spa was the only Kerry volunteer at the recent Special Olympics in Abu Dhabi. While there she witnessed Castleisland’s Gary O’Sullivan win two medals and made new friends from all over the world.

Volunteer says trip was a “life-changing experience” Special Olympic hero Gary welcomed home in Killarney and Castleisland The Killarney woman who volunteered for the Irish team at the recent Special Olympics in Abu Dhabi has described her experience as “life changing”. Leanne Cronin, from Spa, has been a volunteer with Special Olympics Ireland for little over a year, after signing up for a scheme set up by her employer, Kerry Group. She was the only Kerry person on the 74-strong volunteer team in the United Arab Emirates earlier this month.

She witnessed first-hand the success of Castleisland athlete Gary O’Sullivan who won a gold and silver medal at the games. Gary, a member of the Kerry Stars, won gold in the shot put competition and backed this up with silver in the 400m walk.

He returned to Kerry last weekend to a hero’s welcome at the Dromhall Hotel on Friday night after a Garda escort from the railway station. On Saturday night he was paraded through his native Castleisland. “It was a privilege to share my Special Olympics World Games experience with Gary. Gary is a gent,” she said. “Although we approached the games from different angles I felt so fortunate to be in Abu Dhabi for the Games when a proud Kerry

man displayed his best ability and put his hard months of training to good use. He raised the flag not just for Ireland those days, but Kerry also, and that made me very proud. It was phenomenal, the entire experience,” she added. “To witness the sportsmanship and the friends for life that I made from all over the world. We were treated like royalty over there and the people of the UAE were some of the friendliest people I met in all my travel. The experience was life-changing.” Leanne started volunteering for Special Olympics Ireland last year and her first major event was the Dublin qualifiers in June and this prompted her to join the local Kerry Stars Special Olympic Club as a volunteer. “I was lucky that Kerry Group set this up. I always wanted to volunteer but this helped me take the next step,” she added. “The great work that the Kerry Stars do in all sports is fantastic.”

Columnist ANNE LUCEY gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry and beyond

Plans for South Kerry Greenway have been very badly handled The South Kerry Greenway is paved with good intentions, but its handling has been pretty abysmal. Apparently, the greenway from Glenbeigh was on foot of an idea by Eamon O’Cuiv while a Minister for Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs between 2002 and 2010. The South Kerry Development Partnership commissioned the initial feasibility study. The project was then eagerly taken over by Kerry County Council with its army of highly qualified engineers and planners. It was announced with great fanfare in 2014 - some weeks in advance of the local elections if you remember - with the iconic picture by Don MacMonagle of Junior Transport Minister Alan Kelly on a bicycle on the Kells viaduct. It was to cost €4.7 million, €4 million which was to be grant aided. The Victorian feat of engineering that was the old rail line, brought prosperity to south Kerry between 1895 until it closed in 1960, bringing decline. The greenway would be a way of rectifying that terrible decision to cut the lifeline to Cahersiveen. But much as in 1960, local people were not given much of a chance to make

an input when the greenway was announced. Most of them had in fact not been approached by March 2014. And it was not even known how many landowners there were. 90 landowners was one figure thrown out. It turned out to be almost twice that. The greenway would be the only means of bringing prosperity to towns like Cahersiveen and Iveragh, which were bleeding population and it was incomprehensible to the Council management - and to many Killarney and Tralee councillors - how such a good idea couldn’t but be supported! In a way this was understandable. The old rail line was being pursued, but it was also not being pursued in places! So it seemed the route could actually be a moveable feast. Then again I am no engineer. I met with landowners in Foilmore

three summers ago. What they saw as the high-handed approach by the Council had got their backs up - as much as cutting through their back and front yards. I saw where some of that new green line was going, and it was beyond me how small farmers could manage all day opening and closing gates. But, by far the biggest faux pas was the taking out of the Compulsory Purchase Order (CPO) card and brandishing it too early - as far back as December 2014. The CPO order was needed because grant funding will run out if the project is not completed by December 2016, councillors were warned. This controversial weapon was going to ensure division. Perhaps it is beyond understanding in Tralee, or in towns like Killarney, but land grabbing is a real and not just a historical threat in

We must never again hand over power to any institution News that alleged claims of the abuse of a child by Eamon Casey, Bishop of Kerry, between 1969 and 1976 - were handled by the Diocese of Kerry on foot of other revelations at the weekend - is disappointing. His affair with Annie Murphy, revealed by the Irish Times, was one of the first revelations about the church here and was a great scandal. But now, with the avalanche of alleged child sex abuse claims - that affair was seen as some-

what innocent - since they were two adults. However, the new revelations put him in the same category as other flamboyant princes and princelings of the church of the 1970s and 1980s who wielded their power without challenge to huge applause in the media and in this county. Elsewhere in this column, there is reference to the balancing power of the State - the courts. The courts can stand up for common sense when local authorities are blinded and single minded. Providing of course you can gather the

money to afford to bring the case! But there was no balancing in this State when it came to Casey and others in the Catholic Church. There was complete reverence and complete handing of power. We never agreed with British royalty and titles, but we created our own royalty in the princes of the church, just as we did with certain families. The church could not be questioned. Their rings had to be kissed, their clothes laundered, their cars driven fast and their dinners were fine dining. The people

the countryside. And land grabbing by the State is one of the biggest red alerts there is. CPOs are normally used for vital projects, like rails, roads, gas, electricity, ports and housing. The South Kerry Greenway for leisure cyclists from the towns and cities may be a most desirable project - but it is hardly vital. I see a long haul, as with the Bonane people fighting against taking water from the Sheen River, first through petitioning councillors and management in the Council chamber in Tralee, without result, then through the planning process and an oral hearing, and then having to gather money and go through the courts. And at the end of the day the water is being taken from the corrie lake where the Bonane people always said it should! Now what brings me to this is the RTE Primetime Programme on the greenway which featured on Tuesday night and the decision by the Council not to contribute or send forward a spokesperson or say anything at all because the matter is going through the planning process! Oh dear, oh dear! Hiding behind a functionary process is rarely a good idea. You are better off meeting the people! who should have questioned them - the politicians and the professions - stood by and actually cosied up to them. I doubt this was out of fear for their eternal souls as much as out of temporal ambition. If you wanted to advance in society, you kept in with the priests, nuns and the bishop! Girls whose aunts were nuns found it easier to get into nursing, and boys and girls whose uncles were priests glided into the teaching posts...and women… well women knew their place in a society presided over by men in long skirts, flashy lace, and gold and ruby rings and cars. We must never again hand over such power to any institution, any single authority, secular or religious, no matter how respected. We must always have a balancing scale, no matter how much it costs us! And where we see the lack of balance - we must point it out.

Healy Rae calls to reduce Glenflesk speed limit now Local TD Danny Healy Rae is calling for the speed limit in Glenflesk village to be reduced immediately. | By Sean Moriarty His comments come following an inquest into the death of local woman Denise Crowley who was fatally injured after being struck by a car while trying to cross the main Cork to Killarney Road in December 2017. She was using a dedicated pedestri-

an crossing to take her the from the O’Brien’s shop side of the road to the church side. During an inquest in to the accident Garda traffic expert Jim O’Brien said that he could not understand why there is a pedestrian crossing on a national primary rood. “I cannot understand why speed limits

House prices in Killarney €50k above county average The price of the average threebed semi in County Kerry rose by 4.7 percent to €222,500 in the past year, according to a national survey carried out by Real Estate Alliance. However, the average three-bed semi in Killarney is currently selling for €275,000, €50k above county average, reaching sale agreed in an average of six weeks. Kerry prices were static in the first three months of this year, the REA Average House Price Survey found.

The survey concentrates on the actual sale price of Ireland's typical stock home, the three-bed semi, giving an up-to-date picture of the second-hand property market in towns and cities countrywide to the close of last week. “The supply for this sector is very low, to the point where we are seeing the market stagnate,” Donal Culloty of REA Coyne and Culloty, Killarney said. “This is aggravated by a lack of finance available to encourage new building.” The average semi-detached house nationally now costs €235,898.

Sadly lovely Denise Crowley had to lose her life before Kerry County Council and the Transport Infrastructure Ireland would take action. I am also asking that the roadside sign outside O'Brien's shop that Garda Sergeant blames for contributing to the cause of the accident be removed immediately.”

“This programme was a great success last year and I am delighted that Kerry will benefit from it again this week.” said local Senator Paul Coghlan. “It gives funding to community groups across Kerry to improve facilities in disadvantaged areas. Some funding will be ring-fenced for smaller projects, from lawnmowers and IT equipment to minor renovations to buildings. The programme also provides funding towards larger projects in disadvantaged areas. “Typical enhancements under the programme could include the purchase of equipment or materials, improvements to town parks and common areas and spaces, CCTV equipment and energy efficiency type projects,” added Coghlan. The CEP was launched for the first time in 2018 and I approved funding of 12.5 million euro for over 3,000 projects across the country.

Public meeting on new sewerage scheme Residents in Kilcummin say it is a matter of “seeing is believing” after Irish Water issued them with an invitation to a public meeting to discuss a new sewage scheme for the village.

SuperValu’s new improvements puts customers first

The public meeting is planned to take place next Wednesday (April 3) in the Kilcummin GAA club house, from 5.30pm – 7pm. The €3 million project will involve the construction of a new pumping station and the additional infrastructure needed to connect Kilcummin to the Killarney town wastewater network to facilitate treatment at the town plant. Kilcummin Rural Development supervisor John Moriarty says the condition of

local roads are an issue too, with road improvements continuously delayed as the roads would be dug up again to facilitate the sewage scheme works. “We have been living on this promise for a number of years,” John said. “We won’t believe until we see it. People are complaining about the roads for so long now we are tired of it. If you mention the sewage scheme around here people will laugh at you.”

Daly's SuperValu are constantly looking at ways to improve their customer’s shopping experience - and with this in mind – they recently installed four new self-serve checkouts. And not only that, the Killarney store has undergone an extensive refurb of their off licence, increasing the floor area and introduced a wide range of new offerings. “With people now having very hectic lifestyles we wanted to improve the offering at the till area to help our customers,” PJ McGee, Store Manager, said. “We saw self-serve checkouts as a way of doing this while maintaining the high level of service we offer at the rest of our checkouts daily.” The self-serve checkouts are open daily from 7am to 11pm, seven days a week where one of their friendly staff will be on hand to help guide customers through the process. “In January, we embarked on an extensive refurb of our off licence to help

improve our customers shopping experience instore,” he added. “We increased the floor area of our off licence and in doing so we were able to build on our existing range and introduce a wide range of offerings to our customer including new premium and organic wine, a larger beer section, a dedicated chilled wine offering, along with an increased offering of new and existing craft beers and spirits with the likes of Graham Norton gin exclusive to SuperValu, which would make an ideal Mother’s Day gift. “Mags Gallivan, our off licence manager and her team of Donal Coffey, Noel Fitzpatrick and Ore Sarnecki are on hand to offer advice and suggestions should you have any queries or special requests.”

Killarney second in TripAdvisor list Killarney has been named as the second-best rated destination in Ireland on TripAdvisor’s annual Travellers’ Choice Awards for destinations.

Dublin was named the top destination in the country - but Killarney was still listed ahead of Galway, who came in third place. Other local destinations in TripAdvisor’s top 10 include Dingle in fourth and Sneem in 10th.

In the world rankings, London jumped from second place in 2018 to win the world’s number one destination on the list. The awards recognise the locations that are the most popular among reviewers based on millions of reviews and opinions. In the same poll, the Killarney Park Hotel finished ninth in the list of top Irish hotels, while Tralee’s Ballygarry House Hotel was named as the second best hotel in the country.

Coronas singer is special guest at music event Danny O’Reilly, lead singer of The Coronas, will be one of the special guests at the St Brendan's College music show next week. SuperLeague basketball winner and All-Ireland football champion Kieran Donaghy, and ex-Ireland and Munster rugby player, Tony Buckley, are the other guests for the April 7 event. Six years ago Internationally-renowned musician Liam O'Connor came with an idea to St Brendan's College Principal Sean Coffey to organise a series of musical evenings. While The Sem is renowned for the calibre of footballer it produces, there is also a hugely vibrant music scene in the college under the guidance and hard work of music teachers Mish O'Donoghue and Niamh O'Connell. Liam presents weekly classes in the college and invited the students to perform with the Liam O'Connor Show at Elec-

tric Picnic as part of his performance at one of the biggest festivals in the world. Since then they have gone on to audition for Britain's Got Talent. “The idea was to bring high profile musicians and guest speakers to the college and also give the students the opportunity to showcase their talents as part of a professional gig,” Liam said. “An integral part of the evenings are the guest speakers who provide valuable insights from their life experiences to the students. These shows have consistently sold out in the past five years and is expected to do so again.” Ticket bookings can be made by calling 087 2296000. Doors open at the St Brendan's College Chapel at 8pm.

Homelessness issue inspires local students

A talk by Ronan Doherty of Knocklee House Homeless Accommodation in Tralee inspired Transition Year students to take action and raise awareness. | By Sean Moriarty Last Friday night, the students in St Brigid's Presentation Secondary School in Killarney, staged a sponsored sleep in at the school after a recent visit by Mr Doherty, who told the students that there was 104 adults and 57 children homeless in County Kerry. “These figures startled them into action,” teacher Peggy Dowling said. “The Transition Year students are participating in the Young St Vincent De Paul Programme

and have decided to focus on the social justice issue of homelessness, which is so prevalent in our society. The students felt that there was a great deal of information and media coverage about homelessness in big cities, for example Dublin and Cork, but that people didn't realise how it affects individuals and families in Kerry also.” The proceeds of this sleep in will be divided between St Vincent De Paul and Knocklee House Homeless Accommodation.

Alexis birthday bash for Jack and Jill Foundation A family from Woodlawn will celebrate their daughter’s third birthday by raising funds for the Jack and Jill Foundation. | By Sean Moriarty Little Alexis O’Mahony suffers from Pyruvate dehydrogenase deficiency, a condition that affects her ability to breakdown food to fuel the body and results in side effects that include cerebral palsy and epilepsy. Her parents Steve and Teresa will celebrate her third birthday at the Peak Performance Academy in Deerpark on April 19. Activities include face painting, an Easter egg hunt and yoga for kids and a coffee morning for adults. Alexis requires 24-hour care and the Jack and Jill Foundation provides the O’Mahony family with a nurse for up to 40 hours a month. Currently Jack and Jill provide intensive home nursing hours for 11 children in Kerry. The Good Friday birthday party will raise funds that will go directly to paying for nurses so other families in Ireland can enjoy the same level of care Alexis receives each month. “Teresa is her fulltime carer, but if we ever need help for simple things like

doing the shopping or going for a coffee as a husband and wife we receive great support from the Jack and Jill Foundation,” Steve told the Killarney Advertiser. “The Jack and Jill Foundation gets government funding but it is nowhere near the €3 or €4 million it needs each year. Money raised at Alexis’ birthday party will go directly towards paying for a nurse for another family anywhere in Ireland. “ Steve added that the event would not have happened without support from people like Bobby Enright who offered his Peak Performance Academy venue and Jack and Jill Foundation Kerry manager Siobhan Reen. He also thanked Nave Yoga who are organising a kids yoga session, Reidy’s and the Porterhouse who will provide tea and coffee and some baked delights, Kala holistic therapy who will be doing nails and beauty treatments, Flares Cheerleading Club and Kingdom Party Pals who will have children's characters, face painting, balloon modelling and will be providing the Easter bunny for the Easter egg hunt.

Her first guest is Jessica Sheridan of lifestyle website burpeesbabiesbeauty.com. Jessica joins Pamela to discuss motherhood; the highs, the lows and everything in between. “While on maternity leave I have loved meeting new mums and chatting to them about being mothers and sharing stories and tips. I enjoy listening to podcasts while out walking with my daughter and from there the ‘For All Mum Kind’ idea grew,” she said. The first episode of 'For All Mum Kind' will be available this Sunday the 31st March from iTunes, Spotify, Stitcher and Castbox. Prendiville Farr is a former researcher for RTE Current Affairs and producer for the Oireachtas Broadcasting Unit.

It is a great cause which helps young people in the slum village of Embulbul, Nairobi, explained Eddie Sheehy, from the project. “At present 100 young people are sponsored to complete their primary and secondary education as their own family circumstances make it very difficult to meet the cost of books, uniforms and fees,” he said. “This is the highest number ever of students sponsored by the Kenya Education Project.” Some past pupils of the school are also helped to continue their education and training by paying college fees as well as travel and subsistence allowances, he added. “To date the project has helped students to obtain training in childcare, secretarial, computing, journalism and social work, which is a major boost to their families in their dream of obtaining a job to ease the financial burden on their families.”

Local students win Young Social Innovator award Transition Year students represented Killarney Community College at this year’s Young Social Innovators (YSI) ‘Speakout’, which took place in Cork City Hall recently.

LENDING A HAND: Darragh McCullough from RTE’s ‘Ear to the Ground’ was on hand at Doona’s sheep farm in Lough Accose, Glencar, to help launch 'Cultivate’, a new agri loan. Photo: Valerie O’Sullivan

New farm loan launched in Killarney Darragh McCullough from RTE’s ‘Ear to the Ground’ was guest speaker for the launch of a new product in Killarney last week. On Wednesday, March 20, six credit unions in the Kerry/Cork region joined forces to launch the new agri loan product ‘Cultivate’, in The Gleneagle Hotel. Early milking was the order of the day as the product, which will be available in Killarney, Listowel, Cara Credit Union in Tralee, was officially launched by IFA National Chairman - Farm Business, Martin Stapleton. MC for the night was Pat Spillane, Rural Ambassador and Former Kerry GAA star. The new farm lending project is modelled on a pilot initiative by four credit unions in Galway, who launched the Cultivate brand in 2017. Since then, 20 credit unions throughout Ireland have introduced the agri loan product to members, with nearly €20m in loans issued to farmers. The Cultivate farm loans are for a wide variety of purposes, everything from working capital, cash flow, farm development, livestock purchase, farm machinery purchase, rural enterprise funding, and start up farm finance. “We are delighted to be associated with credit unions and Cultivate, and welcome competition to the farm finance market, allowing our members to benefit from accessible and competitive

credit,” Martin Stapleton, IFA National Chairman - Farm Business said. Also speaking on the night, Brendan Heneghan former Regional Manager with Teagasc and project manager of the Cultivate brand, said they have been working hard on this project for the past number of months. “Credit union agri loan staff have completed a bespoke five-day course on Farm and Finance organised by Teagasc in association with Pallaskenry Agricultural College. Credit unions are now open and ready for business.” The Cultivate farm loan package will offer loans up to €50,000 for a variety of purposes with a competitive loan rate. “While we have been offering farm finance for the past few years in Killarney Credit Union, we hope that the Cultivate product will reinforce the fact that farmers will look to their local credit unions as an alternative for farm finance,” Mark Murphy, CEO of Killarney Credit Union said. “We now have dedicated agri lending staff on board to assist farmers with their applications for finance.” Further information on Cultivate farm loans can be found at any participating credit union or online at www.cultivate-cu.ie.

The senior cycle students, part of the school’s YSI group, chose two issues they feel very passionate about, ‘Be Dementia Aware’ to raise awareness about dementia, and ‘Aid For Life’, to promote the importance of knowing First Aid. The ‘Be Dementia Aware’ group, made up of six students, believed that the issue needed to be explored and want to create an environment where everyone can support people with dementia and their loved ones through their difficult times, explained Lorraine Crowley, teacher and YSI guide. “The TY students completed research to find out the level of knowledge and awareness of dementia the students in the school already possessed. “These Young Social Innovators were photographed and interviewed with Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire TD at the ‘Speakout’ and also won an award for ‘Best Props’ on the day.”

‘Be Dementia Aware’ also aims to promote information about brain health and ways to prevent dementia. The group are organising many events within the school during YSI week, April 8-12, to promote the importance of brain health including a quiz, orienteering and an ‘Alztalk’ for students and teachers. They are also having a bake sale and purple ribbon day and all proceeds will go to the Rockmount Care Centre, Kilgarvan. The second project, ‘Aid For Life’, aims to promote the importance of knowing First Aid, she explained. “This group of students have also completed research to find out the level of knowledge teachers and students have in Killarney about First Aid. Their main focus is ensuring all teachers have the skills required. They believe it should be an essential part of teacher training. “These Young Social Innovators are extremely passionate about this awareness campaign, and are very excited to get their voice further out to Kerry and continue to create a positive influence in the community,” she said. Lorraine herself, received an award for the second year in a row for the most inspirational YSI guide to her students, for encouraging and motivating them throughout their projects.

Night of fun at the annual Hunt Ball

A horse was a guest of honour at the Kerry Hunt Ball in the Killarney Avenue Hotel on Saturday evening. | By Sean Moriarty No - there is no need to be alarmed - as it was not a real horse. Members of the hunt club dressed up as a pantomime horse and galloped through the ballroom of the East Avenue premises while Father Ted’s song ‘My Lovely Horse’, sung by Slog the Dog, provided the background music. It was all part of the fun and games at the annual ball where members of the local club celebrated another successful season on horseback.

Highlights of the season included raising €1,500 for Recovery Haven Kerry Cancer Support House in Tralee. Unusually the club does not present awards at its annual do. “We are a team and everyone is equal in our club,” organiser Julianne O' Connor said. “We celebrated another successful year for the club. We have to say thanks to all the landowners who allowed us through their fields and the publicans along the routes who welcomed us every Sunday through the season. We did not miss one Sunday this year.”

GARDEN MAGIC

Gardening - By Debby Looney

Debby is available for advice and garden consultations, just call 086 6088156 or email barnhillky@gmail.com

May is the earliest for outdoor sowing The weather is sunny, bright and… cold! It brings out a great amount of optimism, especially in gardeners, who are out mowing and sowing. There are few veg or flowers which can be sown outdoors in early spring, really only broad beans and hardy salad or maybe spinach. Seeds will not germinate in this cold, even though the days might be quite warm. Our optimism sends us out with packets of seeds, but only a tiny percentage will yield growth. May is the earliest for outdoor sowing really. Things are different if you have a protected area such as polytunnels or greenhouses. Also, grow tables are increasingly popular to use at home in front of a window. They are a great piece of kit as you can use them year round for micro veg. It is lovely to see packs of veg for sale but remember that they need to be kept sheltered from the frost. They have been grown indoors and are not fully hardy, perhaps with the exception of cabbage varieties, they will perish if there is frost. Likewise, tomatoes and strawberries need to be protected, either with a floating mulch of horticultural fleece, or plastic or glass cloches. Cold frames are also ideal and are a fantastic addition to any garden as they have many number of uses. They are ideal for sowing early, hardening off young plants, taking cut-

tings etc. We are also in between times for pots – not quite summer, not quite winter. I would still recommend heathers, bellis, pansies and violas for outdoor pots now, but if you wish, you can start planting geraniums, provided you keep them indoors. If you have begonia tubers planted, do not worry if you don’t see anything happening – they are notoriously lazy about getting up! It can really take several weeks for them to make an appearance. Senettis are a very popular plant at this time of year. They are the brightly coloured daisies, in purple, mauve and magenta. However, they are not frost resistant, so make sure to take them in at night. They will flower profusely in the spring, but they are not a summer plant. You can cut them back after the first flush of flowering, but their second batch of flowers are not as impressive. They also hate wind, so keep them in a sunny sheltered spot. They dry out very quickly due to the large surface area of the leaf so ensure regular watering. Another option is alpine plants, those such as campanula, aubretia, arabis and saxifrage give great colour, are hardy and can be replanted into the garden after their job in a pot is done, giving you years of pleasure. Primroses, especially polyanthus – which are simply primrose flowers on a tall stem – are another hardy option.

LAUGH: Comedian Katherine Lynch and Cheryl Fergison will star in 'Menopause The Musical’ at the INEC. Photo by Colin Shanahan

‘Menopause The Musical’ set for INEC next week Some famous faces are set for an appearance in Killarney next week bringing to the stage the hilarious celebration of women and ‘The Change’. Comedian Katherine Lynch of RTÉ’s ‘Wagons Den’, Cheryl Fergison who played EastEnders favourite Heather Trott, Maureen Nolan of The Nolans, and Casualty’s Rebecca Wheatley, will take to the INEC stage with the hysterical ‘Menopause The Musical’, on Sunday April 7. Menopausal or just in need of a laugh out loud kind of night, this show, which has entertained and inspired women across the world since 2001, is

a must see for all women. This hilarious celebration of women and 'The Change', is an all-singing, all-dancing comedy bringing together four women at a department store sale, who on first appearance have nothing in common. However, the sale of a black lace bra soon stimulates comical female heart-to-hearts on hot flushes, night sweats, memory loss, chocolate binges, not enough sex, too much sex and plastic surgery.

Madame Fourcade’s Secret War By LYNNE OLSON GENRE: BIOGRAPHY RELEASED: MARCH 2019 | AMAZON: €21 In 1941, a thirty-one-year-old Frenchwoman, a young mother born to privilege and known for her beauty and glamour, became the leader of a vast intelligence organisation — the only woman to serve as a chef de résistance during the war. Strong-willed, independent, and a lifelong rebel against her country’s conservative, patriarchal society, Marie-Madeleine Fourcade was temperamentally made for the job. No other French spy network lasted as long or supplied as much crucial intelligence. The Gestapo pursued them relentlessly, capturing, torturing, and executing hundreds of its three thousand agents, including Fourcade’s own lover and many of her key spies. In this dramatic account of the war that split France in two and forced its people

to live side-by-side with their hated German occupiers, Lynne Olson tells the fascinating story of a woman who stood up for her nation, her citizens, and herself.

Kids celebrate St Patrick’s Day Breakfast in Boston A group of talented children from Killarney were invited to perform at the St Patrick’s Day Breakfast in Boston. The event was hosted by Senator Nick Collins at the Cruiseport in South Boston on March 17. The group are made up of five children, Grace, Colleen, Olivia and Seán Angland brother and sisters from Killarney, and

Nóirín Healy from Glenflesk, all who play music, dance and sing. They range in age from seven to 12 years and have been performing together for a number of years. State Representative Ed Coppinger

first saw the group play in September 2018, and he recommended the group to Senator Collins who extended the invite. Their one hour show was put together by Martina O’Neill Angland, the wellknown fiddle player from Kenmare. “From January to March, I spent many nights per week training the group,

followed by taking them to perform in some local venues before departing for Boston,” Martina said. “In Boston, on St Patricks Day, the group performed for over 600 people comprising of politicians, their families and friends. During the performance they were interviewed and recorded on live television.”

“Share driving licence organ donor data” says senator

New law could see time change scrapped On Tuesday, European Union lawmakers voted that from 2021 the practice of moving clocks forward by an hour in spring then back again in the autumn will be scrapped. Clocks will go forward this Sunday and we can look forward to a “grand stretch in the evening” as the saying goes. An interesting story, lost in the pile of Brexit news, emerged from the European Parliament this week.

Trump CORNER

MEPs voted 410 to 192 in favour of ending the practice of seasonal time shifts. This will form the basis of discussions with EU member countries to produce a final law. The countries have yet to take a stance.

Since 2001, EU law has required all countries in the bloc to observe daylight saving time, moving clocks forward by an hour on the last Sunday of March and back by an hour on the final Sunday in October. The practice of switching clocks was first introduced in World War One and brought back during the 1970s oil crisis, aiming to save energy by prolonging evening daylight in summer. The European Commission proposed in September to end the bi-annual practice after an EU-wide opinion survey showed a large majority in favour of doing so. Potentially this weekend could be one of the last times you change your clock.

Fianna Fáil Senator Mark Daly has demanded a change in the law that would save more lives - by allowing state agencies to share individual’s information. Nearly 1,000,000 people have indicated on their driving licence that they want to be organ donors. However, he says that because of the Minister’s inaction this information is unavailable to health care professionals. He’s calling on the Transport Minister to allow medical professionals access to driving licence information so that they can establish if a driver licence holder is an organ donor. The Government already allows licence details to be shared with other State bodies. “There are around 2.6 million driving licence holders in Ireland at the moment,” Senator Daly, who was nominated to the Seanad by the Irish Kidney Association, explained. “Since 2013, driving licence applicants have been asked if they would they be willing to be an organ donor. However, doctors and medical professionals are currently not allowed to access this information. The Minister for Transport needs to act. It is unacceptable and short sighted not to allow driving licence information that could save and transform lives be shared with medical professionals involved in organ donation.”

Study shows spike in tweets about “Embarrassment” since Trump elected | By Christopher Buckley A recent study conducted by scientists from Michigan State, the University of Lübeck, and Goethe University has shown a 45 percent increase in tweets about “Embarrassment” since President Donald Trump took office. The research document was published on Wednesday of this week. “People are tweeting far more about embarrassment now than they were during the pre-Trump

inauguration,” said coauthor Dar Meshi, assistant professor of advertising and public relations at Michigan State University. “Overwhelmingly, the number-one thing most consistently related to spikes of the word ’embarrassment’ on Twitter is Trump,” Meshi said. Researchers identified moments when tweets about embarrassment spiked and counted the tweet content during that time. Then, they created word clouds to

see what words were most linked to embarrassment. The height of the cringe took place on March 18, 2017 and May 26, 2017. These are the dates when Trump denied German Chancellor Andrea Merkel’s handshake at her visit to the White House, and the date Trump pushed Montenegro Prime Minister Dusko Markovic at the NATO Summit, respectively. This may not come as a surprise, but we now have the data to make it official.

They are now partnering with Elite Events to grow the event and bring more people to Dingle for this iconic and breathtakingly beautiful cycle. The cycle organisers are very proud to partner with the Camphill Community in Dingle who work with people with intellectual disabilities and other kinds of special needs. “We’ve been running this cycle for many years and everyone who has ever done

it agrees it is one of the best routes in Ireland,” Irish Olympian and President of Dingle Cycling Club Paudie Fitzgerald said. “We know the potential for it and we want to share that with as many people as possible. It’s a very challenging and rugged part of the world and it will provide you with great memories of a special cycle. We hope to get groups and individuals along to stretch their legs on it and enjoy the whole of the area with what promises to be a great party in Dingle after.” Dingle will be the scene of much celebration post-event. Drinking milk has long been part of the finish celebrations at the world-famous Indy 500 in the USA. Kerry Motor Club and its new event partner Ballymac Dairy will bring this tradition to Tralee for this first time. In doing so, the Circuit of Kerry will become the first rally in Ireland to do this. Chris Maloney, owner of the Ballymac Dairy in Kerry, delivers his pasteurised, non-homogenised milk to 180 doorsteps in Tralee and to many local shops in Kerry. “As a native New Yorker I am well aware of the Indy 500 tradition,” he said. “I am delighted to play my part in bringing this tradition to a local rally. The Indy 500 winner gets a glass bottle of milk

as part of the celebration and Ballymac Dairy is the only local dairy to supply glass bottled milk, another plus point as consumers move away from single use packaging.” Kerry Motor Club is conscious of the link between drinking alcohol at the finish ramp of the rally and is a supporter of Motorsport Ireland’s ‘Keep the Race in its Place’ road safety campaign. “Rally cars and alcohol is not the right message,” said club chairman PJ O’Dowd. “I am proud that Kerry Motor Club is the first club in Ireland to do this. We hope other clubs in the country follows us.” Members of the public can view the rally winners drinking Ballymac Dairy milk at the finish ramp of the Circuit of Kerry. The ramp will be positioned outside the Rose Hotel and the first car is expected just after 4pm.

Donation Awareness Week

To mark Organ Donation Awareness Week, which begins tomorrow (Saturday), the HSE and An Post have released a special postage stamp showcasing the importance of becoming an organ donor. | By Christopher Buckley

Make time to de-stress the body and mind

29.03.2019

An Post staff member Andy Kavanagh, who is one of Ireland’s longest living heart donor recipients, and David Crosby, a double lung transplant recipient who is preparing to run his third full marathon in honour of his lung donor, were at the GPO in Dublin last week to launch the special stamp. Pictured on the special ‘Organ Donors Save Lives’ stamp is an hourglass, to represent the nature of time and life passing from one person to another through organ donation. It will help raise awareness of the importance of becoming an organ donor, with organ donor cards also being available in every Post Office. An Post, along with the HSE’s Organ Donation Transplant Ireland (ODTI), will be

joining to ask the Irish public to talk with their families about their desire to start being an organ donor with the hashtag #HaveThatConversation. Talking to family about being an organ donor is the most important thing you can do to ensure that can happen, as well as carrying an organ donor card, or having that information included on your driver’s licence. You can also download the ‘digital organ donor card’ app for your phone. Organ donor cards can be obtained at all Post Offices, by phoning the Irish Kidney Association on 01 6205306 or free texting the word DONOR to 50050. The stamp can be scanned by a smartphone with the Cee App, where users will be redirected to the www.hse.ie/ organ-donation webpage.

It’s important to look after yourself both inside and out - and the best way to do this - is to make time for yourself to really relax and unwind. While drinking water and eating a balanced diet are very important, it’s also worth taking time out once a month or every six weeks to treat yourself to a facial, manicure or a full body massage. All of the above used to be considered a luxury, but these days with the extra life stresses, they seem to be more and more like necessities. A full body massage can completely relax every muscle, easing away any tension you may be holding onto. It’s amazing what a hands on treatment can do for the mind and body. The smells of the oils, relaxing music and massage techniques help soothe the muscles. Massage can also increase blood flow, which helps re-energise the body thus evoking a feeling of well-being and increased relaxation. Generally, after a massage treatment you will sleep more

deeply and wake up feeling much fresher. I often hear from clients that they have a full night’s sleep, but still wake up tired. Contributing factors include modern devices with screens, which brings extra stress on the body. The light from the screen can affect the mind’s eye, not allowing you to be rested fully when you think you are, causing a feeling of continued tiredness. It shouldn’t be hard to take an hour a month to have a relaxing massage, straighten up the neck and release the energy flow. We always recommend that when a client goes home they drink plenty of water and relax for the evening, stay off the devices and just really unwind and unplug. It’s amazing how productive you become when you’re really relaxed. Call Jill for more information 064 6632966

Acclaimed Galway Fringe performer in Tech Amergin Eve O’Mahony, Best Actress Galway Fringe 2018, will be performing her unique one woman show, ‘Brigid Cleary’, tomorrow (Saturday) in Tech Amergin. This one-woman show, which begins at 8pm, describes the life and events which led to the death of Brigid Cleary, the last woman to be burned in Ireland. She was accused of being a changeling and is ultimately burned to death at the hands of her husband in Tipperary, in 1895. The character of Brigid is the main narrator throughout the performance, but her

story is also told by a host of other characters. She tells the bittersweet story of her life as a successful businesswoman living in a patriarchal society and the details which lead to her tragic death. This moving play brings forth a whole slew of issues - of inequality, tradition, and superstition, progression and ignorance, group mentality and individual steadfastness, independence and interdependence and the role of women in early 20th century rural Ireland society. Tickets €12. Booking essential on 066 9478956.

WELCOME Welcome to the March edition of Home and Living. Where is this year going? I can’t believe it will be Easter soon. The longer evenings and this wonderful weather has me dreaming of summer. And although I love long winter evenings in front of the fire, I think my body is craving some vitamin D. This month we are looking at one of the most hardworking rooms - kitchens. The kitchen has become the hub of the home. With the rise in open plan living, we are using our kitchens a little differently than our parent’s generation. So, if you’re thinking of renovating this much used space, we’ve looked at the latest trends for kitchens for you. White kitchens were a huge trend for the last few years, and to be honest, a white kitchen will never go out of style completely. However, we are seeing more pops of colour and wood making an appearance, and for the brave out there we love the dark green trend, seen on our front cover. If your kitchen is in good nick but is looking a little tired, you may just think of getting it painted - definitely a job for the professionals - but there is a big saving on ripping it all out. Whatever you decide, your kitchen is the heart of the home and deserves a little love in return.

Kitchen

TRENDS 2019

Whether you're planning to remodel your kitchen or get inspired for a simple refresh, there's a whole new crop of design trends to consider.

Here are some of our favourites:

PEWTER AND GUNMETAL

Pewter and gunmetal are the new trend. They're not as harsh as matte black or as in your face as brass or gold, but it gives fixtures some texture and depth.

OPEN SHELVING

A huge trend at the moment is replacing upper kitchen cabinets with metal, wood or glass shelving. Inspired by hotel and retail spaces, this adds to the overall bold statements many want to make in their homes, forgoing the minimalism that was popular in years past. You do need to be very tidy for this look.

VINTAGE VIBE

We’ll continue to see traditional elements and forms in harmony with modern design in 2019. Think honed, natural stone, organic basalt tiles, hand wrapped rattan furniture and vintage-inspired fixtures and lighting.

POPS OF COLOUR

In 2019, we are officially closing the door on pure white kitchens. Even if it's just one element of accent colour – green counter stools, a patterned Roman shade or powdered coated island pendants – pops of colour will be sneaking into the pure white blank slate of kitchens past.

THE NEWEST

TRENDS FOR 2019

45

WOOD

We are increasingly seeking connections from nature. It creates a welcoming and calming environment, and is a timeless, versatile material we love. We see a growing desire for lighter, airier spaces, and wood is a wonderful material to incorporate to achieve this.

COLOURED CABINETRY

We are seeing a lot of coloured cabinets in kitchens while moving away from all white cabinetry. Make a statement and create a mood with cabinetry - like using deep or grey-washed blues and greens. These are being beautifully paired with fixtures and hardware in brass and other contrasting metals.

PENDANT LIGHT FIXTURES

Statement hanging pendants will be important in denoting different areas within an open-plan space. Anchoring the dining area will be particularly important and sculptural jewellery with a mid-century Italian influence, will be popular in luxury developments.

DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY

CONTRASTING TEXTURES

Digital technology will continue to drive innovations and new pleasures in the kitchen, giving homeowners ever more specific home appliances targeted to their tastes. WiFi-enabled espresso makers can prepare your morning cappuccino before you even get out of bed, and wine technology is evolving from big wine fridges to restaurant quality single pour preservation systems.

INTEGRATED APPLIANCES

Dark green kitchen garners a myriad of adjectives from classic, welcoming, warm, cozy, luxe, especially when we introduce the use of walnut woods and leather door pulls to give a little pop. It really doesn't get much better than this colour.

A combination of contrasting textures and sleek finishes - think mirrored backsplashes with highly-polished, chunky marble work tops, or cupboards with textured bronze inlays and matte cupboard fronts.

We will continue to see integrated appliances. We have hoods that are slim and turn on automatically, that are stronger than some of the industrial ones we have seen in the past. Induction cooktops continue to be increasingly popular because of their seamless look. You no longer need to see appliances sticking out everywhere anymore - that’s the new face of luxury.

DARK GREEN

CLASSIC AND MODERN

In 2019, kitchens will be a mix of classic and modern. People want modern amenities and integrated looks, but they don’t want their kitchens to look space aged. It’s the heart of the home and they want their kitchens to feel warm, welcoming, and attractive.

Bring a sense

of calm into

YOUR KITCHEN

One of this year's trend colours is green, especially when it comes to kitchens. This mid-century green helps to create a sense of calm. Light and colour work together, but without a good lighting plan anything will look dark and dreary. The interior design scheme forms over many phases, so before you revamp the colour scheme you should first

address the lighting. During this kitchen renovation project some of the kitchen cupboards got shifted and the island was replaced with a large dining room table to adjust to the needs of the family. The counter top was replaced with off-white quartz which brings a sense of freshness to the overall interior design scheme. The original red Venetian blinds were kept as they enhance the green units. The extra lighting was put in under the presses and inside the cabinets to create a brighter workspace. The wooden floor boards also bring a touch of authenticity to the space. The updated kitchen is functional and visually attractive.

WINDOW

TREATMENTS

for your kitchen SHUTTERS

We love the clean lines shutters bring to a kitchen making them aesthetically pleasing. Unlike kitchen blinds and drapes, which can get damp or retain smells, shutters are low maintenance, flexible and easy to wipe clean. The beauty of kitchen shutters is the fact that they're so simple to control. You can close and angle the slats for privacy, or open them to let the light flood in.

ROMAN BLINDS

This type of dressing is perfect for smaller windows, which could be overwhelmed by a pair of curtains. Perfect for cottages, a Roman blind will sit neatly within the recess without taking up any space either side of the window. Using a Roman blind allows you to lower the blind to protect from the glare of the sun. The pleating style gives plenty of options between open and closed, depending on how low the sun is. Roman blinds can be the ideal choice for a kitchen or bathroom in which you don't want lots of bulky fabric hanging over your sink or taking up precious space.

ROLLER BLINDS

Roller blinds have all the advantages of Roman blinds but are often the less expen-

Spruce up your dull kitchen with a lick of paint One of the quickest and easiest ways to spruce up a tired kitchen is to paint your cabinets. That said, painting cabinets is an exact process that requires great attention to detail. Should you paint your cabinets or just replace them with new ones? If your cabinets are in good working order but just looking a little tired, the most cost effective way of getting the new kitchen look is painting them. You may look at your old cabinets and think it would take a miracle to make them better. Paint just may be that miracle

you are looking for! When done correctly, painted cabinets will look just like new. You’ll be stunned by the results, and your friends won’t believe you when you say they were painted - not replaced! Top Team Painters offer kitchen makeovers which includes spray painting doors, replacing counter tops, sinks, tiling, lighting and decorating services. They also specialise in commercial and domestic painting and decorating and aim to deliver the perfect finish and superb customer relations throughout the job in hand, no matter how small or large the job is.

Randles Bros, located on the Muckross Road, is one of nine garages nationwide to be selected by ESB ecars for an upgrade to the electric car charging network. The original EV charging network is now almost 10 years-old and is currently being upgraded and expanded. According to The Society of the Irish Motor Industry, nearly 2,100 electric vehicles, both new and imported, were registered in Ireland in February this year. ESB has been at the forefront of enabling electromobility, having built one

of Europe’s first nationwide EV charging networks and associated operational supports with more than 1,100 charging points across the island of Ireland. There are currently 29 charge points across Kerry including one in the Glebe car park on Plunkett Street. “For a country of our size, we have one of the more comprehensive charge point networks currently in place across Europe,” Senator Paul Coughlan said. A real-time map showing the charge points, including the status and availability is available on the ESB’s website at www.esb.ie/ecars.

In January this year, there were 857 cars sold in the county, 135 fewer than last year, representing a drop of 15.75 percent. February showed a bigger decline with only 299 cars sold in the region compared to 406 the previous year. The Hyundai Tucson is the most popular car in the county with 50 units sold up

Rank Make

until the end of February, three more than its nearest rival, the Ford Kuga. The Kia Sportage was the third most popular car in the county - with 45 units sold. In terms of overall sales, Ford is the most popular make in Kerry with 158 different cars sold compared to Hyundai’s 131 and Volkswagen’s 93 cars. Interestingly, diesel remains the most popular form of engine-type, with 562 oil-burners taking to the local roads compared to just 22 pure electric cars. While the SUV body style is the most popular, 516 units in total, one lucky Kerry driver is the proud owner of a 191-plated convertible.

40 year-old tractor up for raffle A Ford tractor that was bought new 40 years ago by the Great Southern Hotel in Killarney will be the star attraction at the Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club’s annual road run on April 7. The club’s fourth annual run will start from the Faha Court Hotel and will take in a secret route in the mid-Kerry area. This year’s run is open to any car, truck or tractor, that is more than 20 years-old.

Each year the club raffles a vintage vehicle to raise funds for local charities. This year its members have sourced the very tractor that was once owned by the Great Southern Hotel and was used

by the hotel’s gardeners until 2006. Members of the club have restored the 1979 Ford 2600 to period condition and this will be first prize in the annual charity raffle. “The route will be a mystery,” PRO Tom Leslie said. “We are inviting any vehicle that is more than 20 years-old to participate. It is great fun and there will be a few stops along the way too. The

tractor is fully restored. I worked in the hotel for years and I was looking at it every day.” The club will meet early next week to decide which local charities will benefit from this year’s raffle. Last year, the club raised €45,000 for Down Syndrome Kerry and Recovery Haven Cancer Support House after raffling a restored Land Rover 90.

MEMORARE NOVENA

Every day I need you, Lord, but today especially, I need some extra strength to face whatever is to come. This day more than any other day I need to feel you near me to strengthen my courage and to overcome my fear. By myself I cannot meet the challenge at the hour. We are frail human creatures and we need a Higher Power to sustain us in all that life may bring. And so, dear Lord, hold my trembling hand. Be with me, Lord, this day and stretch out your powerful arm to help me. May your love be upon me as I place all my hope in you. Amen C.D

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary That never was it known that anyone who fled to Thy protection, Implored Thy help or sought Thy intercession, was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence I fly unto Thee, O Virgin of Virgins, my Mother; To Thee do I come, before Thee I kneel sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word incarnate, despise not my petitions, But in Thy clemency hear and answer me. Amen. C.D

O St. Joseph, whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt before the throne of God, I place in you all my interest and desires. O St. Joseph, do assist me by your powerful intercession, and obtain for me from your divine Son all spiritual blessings, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. So that, having engaged here below your heavenly power, I may offer my thanksgiving and homage to the most loving of Fathers. O, St. Joseph, I never weary contemplating you, and Jesus asleep in our arms; I dare not approach while He reposes near your heart. Press Him in my name and kiss His fine head for me and ask Him to return the kiss when I draw my dying breath. St. Joseph, Patron of departing souls pray for me. This prayer was found in the fiftieth year of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. In 1505 it was sent from the Pope to Emperor Charles when he was going into battle. Who ever shall read this prayer or hear it or keep it about themselves, shall never die a sudden death, or be drowned, nor shall be burned in any fire or shall be overpowered in battle. Say for nine mornings for anything you desire. It has never been known to fail, so be sure you really want what you ask for. In thanks for request granted. E.M

NEWS BRIEFS... Calls for wildflower garden to be redeveloped Councillor Michael Gleeson is calling on the Council to redevelop the wildflower garden at the Abbey Cross, Muckross. The issue was raised at the recent Killarney Municipal Area Meeting in Killarney Town Hall. Cllr Gleeson said it was a wonderful feature during 2017 attracting an abundance of bees and butterflies. Killarney Municipal District replied that the wildflower garden was set as requested in 2017 as part of the junction improvement works, which at the time gave the wild flowers an opportunity to grow and develop. However, since then the natural flora has taken over. The Council said they will again reseed the area to create a wildflower garden at this location in 2019. Councillor Gleeson welcomed the reply and stated that the previous wild flower garden at the Abbey Cross gave great joy to the local community and to the thousands of visitors who travelled this prime tourist road. He thanked Killarney Municipal District for the positive response. ..............................................................

€750 donated to Recovery Haven The Euro Bridge Club ran a charity night and raised €750 for Recovery Haven, Tralee . Recovery Haven supports cancer patients both during and after treatment, offering a nice tranquil place to chat and meet others who are on a similar jour-

ney. They also offer treatments, Indian Head massage and Reflexology, free of charge. They give counselling, yoga classes, Pilates classes and mindfulness classes as well as talks on health related issues. They run an outreach programme in Killarney every Tuesday at the Reeks and in Killorglin on Thursdays.

Students enjoy day of faith, mindfulness and fun Over 450 post-primary students from across the Diocese of Kerry gathered together for a celebration day in the Brandon Hotel, Tralee on Wednesday. All post-primary schools in the Diocese of Kerry were invited to participate in ‘Ceiliúradh na nÓg’ to develop the faith life of Transition and Fifth Year students. Ceiliúradh na nÓg forms part of a comprehensive approach to Youth Ministry initiated by the Diocese of Kerry. It is coordinated by the Diocesan Advisor in collaboration with the principals, teachers, chaplains and students of the diocesan post-primary schools. The day included a variety of faith based

workshops including presentations from the Diocesan Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation Group, Trócaire and Siamsa Tíre. This year’s guest speaker was Fr Philip Mulryne OP who was ordained a Dominican Priest on July 8, 2017. Previous to entering the Dominican Order he had spent 13 years as a professional footballer in England, six years playing for Manchester United Football Club and six years at Norwich City. He decided to take a year out of football and returned home to Belfast and rediscovered his faith and vocation to the priesthood. At present he is a Chaplain in Newbridge College, Co. Kildare.

The Euro Bridge Club were delighted to present a cheque to Carol Barry from Recovery Haven and to thank their staff for the much appreciated work they do in helping cancer patients. The Euro Bridge Club meets on Tuesdays at 7.30pm in the Great Southern Hotel. New members are welcome, Lynda O’Connor from the club said. Students gave a three minute presentation on their projects and were interviewed by Deirdre Walsh of Radio Kerry. They were also presented with a certificate of participation by Bishop Ray Browne. The day, organised by Tomás Kenny, Post-Primary Diocesan Advisor for Religious Education, was also filled with music, dance and fun games facilitated by Tommy Maloney and the Kerry Diocesan Youth Service, as well as sessions on Christian meditation, Christian mindfulness and scripture. “The Diocese of Kerry strives to journey with young people,” Tomás said. “We run Youth Ministry courses annually, we facilitate Youth Pilgrimages to Taizé and to Lourdes each year and we also maintain a link with a network of Youth Ministers - trained adults who work with young people in our parishes. Ceiliúradh na nÓg is but another way of connecting with our young people.”

Croker-bound with all guns blazing | By Adam Moynihan

Peter Keane leads Kerry into the first final of his nascent reign on Sunday and with David Clifford, James O’Donoghue and Tommy Walsh all in contention to start in the full forward line, fans are hoping for goals.

David Clifford scored five points in his comeback match against Roscommon. Pic: Philip Fitzpatrick/ Sportsfile.

The lack of goals has been the only real criticism of this Kerry team to date. They had the joint best defensive record in Division 1 (with Mayo) and the second highest points total (after Dublin), but The Kingdom found the back of the net just three times in seven games. For comparison, their opponents next Sunday have scored eight goals while Dublin, who finished fourth, scored nine. All told, The Kingdom’s front six did quite well in the absence of David Clifford and James O’Donoghue, but now two of the team’s deadliest finishers are back and raring for action. Clifford kicked 0-5 (0-2 from play)

against Roscommon in his first start of the season and he will surely be one of the first names on the team sheet for the final. The Fossa youngster has the ability to turn a game on its head all by himself and given his incredible track record in Croke Park, expect Kerry to get the ball into his hands as early and as frequently as possible. O’Donoghue has been utilised as an impact sub in Kerry’s past two games but he has proven himself to be a man for the big occasion in the past. The Legion sharpshooter came on for Tommy Walsh with 20 minutes to play in the Roscommon game and with Kevin McCarthy out with an in-

NATIONAL LEAGUE DIV 1 FINAL

Kerry v Mayo Sunday at 4pm Croke Park

29.03.2019 x jury, there’s a chance that Keane will throw the former Player of the Year in from the start. Kerins O’Rahilly’s man mountain Tommy Walsh has turned heads in his comeback season and his fielding and link play make him a valuable weapon at the full forward position. He scored 0-4 against Monaghan but the points have dried up a bit since; he notched 0-1 against Mayo and was kept scoreless against Roscommon before being called ashore. Having said that, you would imagine that his performances so far merit a start in the decider. Dara Moynihan and Seán O’Shea have had great league campaigns to date and they will surely line out at 10 and 11 respectively. That leaves just one place to fill and in-form Kenmare speedster Stephen O’Brien will occupy that position. O’Brien is really flying at the moment, despite being played slightly out of position for most of the league. With a number of natural corner forwards out of contention, he had been filling in at corner forward but he returned to his preferred wing forward position last weekend. O’Brien has scored two of Kerry’s three goals up to this point and you certainly can’t see him losing his place for Sunday’s big game. The tall and mobile Gavin O’Brien has also caught the eye in his debut season and his size is a real asset to Kerry around the middle third. He could also be called upon if Jack Barry and co. are feeling the heat. Diarmuid O’Connor slotted in beside his Na Gaeil clubmate for the Roscommon game and by all accounts acquitted himself well, so he may get the nod again against Mayo. Mark Griffin and Adrian Spillane provide Keane with options but Sunday’s game will come too soon for David Moran, who is still nursing a tendonitis issue. The back line has a more settled look about it with just one jersey, the No. 4, realistically up for grabs. Dromid man Graham O’Sullivan played the last day but with Brian Ó Beaglaoich and Jason Foley also in the running, Keane and his selectors have a tough decision to make. Brian Kelly was brought in for Mayo’s visit to Kerry two weeks ago but Shane Ryan was recalled for Kerry’s most recent fixture, so the Rathmore man appears to be in pole position to start in the final. Both are capable options, however, and with Shane Murphy also hoping to return to the fold, the goalkeeper position seems to be as nebulous as ever for Kerry. The last time The Kingdom visited Croke Park they misfired badly. This time out they’re rocking up with all guns blazing and if Clifford gets the right service, that could make all the difference. Prediction: Kerry by one.

Old foes Mayo will provide a real test Kerry qualified for the National League Division 1 final versus Mayo at Croke Park on Sunday next by virtue of a 2-17 to 0-13 win over Roscommon at Hyde Park. | By Eamonn Fitzgerald All Kerry needed was a single point to book their place in the final. The win was good news for Kerry supporters and it also marked the return to action for the talented David Clifford, playing his first game for Kerry after a long lay-off because of a shoulder injury. He was in great form, scoring five points (two from play). He also created goal chances, a factor missing from this Kerry side throughout this league campaign. It was great to see him back in action and he linked up well with his fellow forwards. This is a very potent forward division with Tommy Walsh, Stephen O’Brien, Seán O’Shea and Dara Moynihan so impressive thus far. There are plenty more options for Kerry in the forward division, led by James O’Donoghue. The new Kerry management team has done a great job, winning all of their games except one. That was in Tralee in very bad weather conditions when Mayo collected the league points. In his interviews Peter Keane has emphasised that these league games have been a learning process for everyone. They have used

31 players in all so far; the objective is to give as many as possible game time and at the same time send out a balanced team that would also win the matches and the league points as well. They have succeeded admirably. Shane Ryan played in all of the games bar one: the match against Mayo. Brian Kelly came in for that game and I was impressed by the Legion man. He did concede one goal but that was not his fault. I expected him to hold his place for the Roscommon game. Only six started in all seven games: captain Paul Murphy, Peter Crowley, Tom O’Sullivan, Seán O’Shea, Jack Barry and Stephen O’Brien, who had a blinder last Sunday.

BID FOR SAM

Next Sunday’s league final in Croke Park will tell us a lot more about Kerry’s prospects in the bid for Sam. That is the big one of course and there are grounds for some optimism. We have great forwards and plenty in reserve. Midfield has done well enough with Jack Barry as the anchor man. There are plenty of options in defence but the choices here are not as clear-cut.

There are lots of good defenders, but can they contain a Dublin forward division that has a proven track record as they bid for yet another All-Ireland? Of course, in the modern game players do not keep to the traditional places on the field. Jack Sherwood is usually picked at full back, but he plays much further out the field marking his man. It’s all about the match-ups. What I like about this developing Kerry team is their gameplan and their style of play. It is a whole team effort and they bring a great intensity to their game. They are very fit and tackle their opponents with fierce determination, surrounding the man with the ball. It is easy to see what they are learning from Donie Buckley, who has added a whole new dimension to this Kerry team. That means that when a member of the opposition has the ball, he is not marked just by his opposite number but rather he is surrounded by three or four Kerry players. He is tackled on all sides so he is not able to shoot for a score or get the ball away to a better-placed team member. In this kind of tackling players have to be very disciplined because they can easily be over-zealous and the referee will deem the tackle a foul. Players live on the edge but within the rules of the game and Kerry have learned to tackle strongly but within the rules. This new Kerry team continues to develop and that is the point that Peter Keane consistently makes. They are learning all the time and with such a big panel no player can be complacent. I like what I see. Next Sunday’s game is a great test for Kerry. Mayo have had a good league campaign and manager Horan has tried out plenty players without weakening his team. They did beat Kerry in Tralee where Aidan O’Shea reigned supreme. He also did well against Monaghan in last Sunday’s win and his battle with Jack Barry in midfield should be one of the features of the game. I expect Kerry to shade it and make amends for the last time they lost in Tralee.

RATHMORE WIN

Scoil Phobail Sliabh Luachra are on their way to Croke Park on April 6 after defeating Ashbourne Community School in the All-Ireland B Colleges semi-final on Saturday last. They won by 2-14 to 4-5. It was an amazing game. Rathmore led by 2-7 to 0-3 at half time, then conceded four goals in the second half. However, they rallied well and deserved to win in the end.

TOTAL: 17 competitions | 16 finals | 12 titles

| By Adam Moynihan

Pat O’Shea isn’t too fond of talking. The outgoing Dr Crokes manager famously refused to speak to the media during his latest spell in the hot seat, much to the annoyance of some journalists who were keen to hear from the man pulling the strings at one of the most successful clubs in the country. But when it comes to O’Shea, the numbers speak for themselves. Over the course of his three-year stint, the Crokes won three consecutive County Championships, two consecutive Club Championships and three consecutive County League Division 1 titles. They won the O’Donoghue Cup once, the Munster Championship twice and in 2017 they captured the coveted All-Ireland Senior Club Championship, a trophy the club had been desperate to reclaim since their maiden triumph back in 1992. Under O’Shea, the Lewis Road outfit took part in 17 major competitions and, incredibly, they reached the final in 16 of them, winning 13. The one final they didn’t make was the 2017 O’Donoghue Cup and even that comes with a fairly noteworthy asterisk. The Crokes controversially pulled out of that particular edition of the tournament when the East Kerry Board scheduled their semi-final clash against Legion for the week before the Munster Club final. You can count on one hand the amount of significant games that the Crokes lost under O’Shea and his record over a three-year term will in all likelihood never be equalled, let alone bettered. What makes it all the more remarkable is that he got those results by employing an easy-on-the-eye, attacking brand of football, in an era when defence is the default setting for many coaches at every level of the game. He also brought through and developed some exceptional young footballers, most notably Gavin White, Tony Brosnan, David Shaw, Micheál Burns and Jordan Kiely, while also getting the best out of the experienced core of players who have been ever-present throughout the Crokes’ decade or so at the top. There’s no doubting that O’Shea inherited a very good team but it was under his watchful eye that they blossomed into the best the club has ever produced. I’ve spoken to a lot of the Crokes lads about Pat over the past few years and the one thing that stands out is how universally well-respected he was by the players. From what I can make out, there were a couple of reasons for this. First and foremost, he knew what he was doing. That might sound like a basic prerequisite for a senior football manager but trust me, you’d be surprised at how many managers would fail this basic test as far as their own players are concerned. Secondly, he’s fanatical. He is obsessed with the Crokes and obsessed with win-

ning. He leaves no stone unturned and that attention to detail shines through when you see his teams play. And thirdly, he doesn’t seem to be motivated by ego. We have all played for managers who enjoy the status of being a manager as much, or more, than the job itself. You never got that impression from O’Shea. His priority was always getting the best out of his players and, naturally, getting results. The players pick up on these things. If your manager doesn’t meet the above criteria then you start having doubts, and as soon as you start doubting the manager, you’re goosed. That never happened under O’Shea and the players 100% bought into his ethos, which was unquestionably a crucial factor throughout their extended period of success.

LIFE AFTER PAT

Selector Edmund Tatler O’Sullivan took charge of last weekend’s County League victory over Kerins O’Rahilly’s and although it hasn’t been officially confirmed at the time of going to print, he is expected to get the gig on a permanent basis after a meeting of the Club Executive some time this week. If rumours are to be believed, O’Sullivan’s management team will have a vibrant look about it with two relatively young men who have played senior in recent times being brought in as selectors. With games coming thick and fast at this time of the year, it would have been a very bold move by the Crokes to go for an outside hire. Promoting a selector, on the other hand, allows for a degree of continuity. O’Sullivan will be keen to put his own stamp on this team eventually but considering the current schedule, it is likely to be business as usual for the foreseeable future. With Pat O’Shea stepping down, and Eoin Brosnan and possibly Colm Cooper also leaving the camp, Crokes’ rivals will be hoping for a period of transition that might leave the champions a bit vulnerable to attack. While it’s true that change brings uncertainty, the reality is that the Crokes are facing into this season with many of the same players on the field and many of the same structures behind the scenes as they had last year, when they won five of the six competitions they entered. As for O’Shea, whatever role he takes up within the club I’m sure he’ll attack it with the same vigour and passion he always does, and that the Crokes will continue to benefit from his methods for many years to come.

Spa fight back to beat 14-man Legion | By Adam Moynihan

Spa emerged victorious in the Killarney Derby on Saturdaty as they recovered from a poor start to beat local rivals Legion by 2-12 to 0-13. Legion led by seven at one stage in the first half but a black card for Pádraig Lucey was quickly followed by a goal from David Spillane and Spa went in at the break trailing by a single point. Legion were reduced to 14 men when Donal Lyne picked up a second yellow early in the second and then Spa took the lead in the 42nd minute through Niall McCarthy. Diminutive half forward Ryan O’Carroll shot for goal and when his weak effort dropped short, McCarthy gathered and goaled in emphatic fashion. This was an important victory for Spa and it will give them some confidence heading into the Intermediate Championship, which kicks off for them on April 7 with a tough match-up against Templenoe. Elsewhere, All-Ireland Intermediate champions Kilcummin made it two wins from two when they defeated Templenoe by 0-15 to 3-4 in Clashnagarrane on Sunday.

Spa's Mike Stam O'Donoghue is challenged by Legion corner back Cian Gammell.

The hosts actually trailed by nine midway through the first half but they kicked six straight points before the break to make it a one-score game. With Kevin Gorman, Matt Keane and Gary O’Leary to the fore, the hosts pushed on in the second and eventually prevailed with two points to spare. This result coupled with their opening day triumph over Austin Stacks leaves Kilcummin joint top of Division 1 and they are one of just three teams who remain

unbeaten in the top tier of Kerry football. Also in Division 1, Matthew Flaherty was the star of the show in Páirc an Ághasaigh as Dingle defeated Rathmore by 12 points (2-18 to 2-6). This was Rathmore’s first game of the season and Dingle is never an easy place to get a result, but they will be hoping for a better showing at home to Crokes this weekend. Speaking of Crokes, the defending champions got the defence of their title off to a winning start by beating last year’s run-

ners up Kerins O’Rahilly’s 2-16 to 1-15 in Lewis Road. The Crokes will be eager to put the All-Ireland final defeat to Corofin to bed and their busy schedule in the coming weeks means that they have the perfect opportunity to do so. After this weekend’s back game in Rathbeg (Saturday at 1pm), they will have a week’s break before opening their Club Championship campaign against Legion in the Park on April 7. In Division 2, Glenflesk got off the mark for the year by hammering Castleisland Desmonds by 4-13 to 1-12 in Glenflesk. Beaufort also picked up their first two points of the season by defeating Kenmare by four, although according to the Kerry GAA website they are now top of the table with two wins from two. If that Dr Crokes B game is, in fact, to be replayed, why is this not reflected on the official league table? Meanwhile, Crokes B suffered a fivepoint home defeat to John Mitchels (1-14 to 2-16) in their first outing of the new campaign. Gneeveguilla lead the way in Division 3 after another impressive victory, this time over Ballydonoghue at home (1-16 to 1-14). They are joined at the top of the table by Firies, who have also emerged victorious in their first couple of games against Fossa and, most recently, Listowel Emmets. In the same division, neighbours Milltown/Castlemaine and Listry played out a keenly contested draw (2-8 to 2-8), while Currow picked up their first two points of the season with a hard-fought away victory over St Pat’s (0-13 to 1-12). Fossa find themselves rooted to the bottom of the table at this early juncture following two disappointing defeats at the hands of Firies and Keel, a first half goal by Aaron Murphy proving the difference for Keel on Sunday (0-12 to 1-10).

No promotion for Lakers but cup still up for grabs The Scotts Lakers’ Super League dreams are on ice for another season at least after they fell short at the semi-final stage last weekend, but one piece of silverware is still up for grabs. The League Cup tips off this weekend and although it isn’t quite as prestigious as the Basketball Ireland’s other competitions, the club would naturally love to finish the season on a high. I spoke to club captain Mark Greene recently about this end-of-season tournament and while he accepted that it didn’t have as much history as the National Cup, he assured me that he and his teammates would still be going all out to win it. “Any time you’re playing you want to put together a performance, and it’s played over two weekends which is good,” he said. “You’re always going out to win. There’s no reason why we shouldn’t be

targeting this competition.” The Lakers face LYIT Donegal in the first round on Saturday evening and victory would set up a quarter-final tie against either IT Carlow or Ulster University on Sunday. That game will also take place in Killarney should the Lakers advance so there’s a big weekend of action in store for local basketball fans. The Lakers also had aspirations of challenging for promotion but unfortunately they fell to a valiant semi-final defeat at the hands of DBS Éanna in Dublin on Saturday. The visiting Lakers actually led at the half-time interval but in the end Éanna’s strength in depth showed and they

eventually pulled away to win by 17. The margin was not an accurate reflection of the game as a whole and the Killarney lads can hold their heads high despite ultimately coming up short against very strong opposition. For the second game in succession, Dutch forward Papito Hersisia provided the Lakers’ main scoring threat and he finished up with an impressive tally of 36 points. Team captain Mark Greene chipped in with 17 points while American guard Seán O’Brien added 11. Éanna, who finished first in the Northern Conference with an almost perfect 22-1 record, got big contributions from Josh Wilson (25), Neil Lynch (22) and Stefan Zecevic (21) on the day. 24 hours later, they were crowned Division 1 champions and gained automatic promotion to the Super League when they defeated the Dublin Lions 73-67 in

Experienced Scotts Lakers big man Andrew Fitzgerald.

WIT. Speaking to Basketball Ireland after the victory, Éanna’s head coach Darren McGovern said his side’s record of 24 wins and just one defeat was “league-winners material”. “We’re dead proud of ourselves and of every player, every backroom member, the committee, the club – the whole of Éanna: they really pushed hard this season to help us achieve what we wanted to achieve from day one. “We came out of the blocks flying, and I was very impressed with our energy levels. The spirit in that Dublin Lions club is fantastic, but we’re a squad that wants to go back to the Super League. We’re a squad that can maintain Super League so with a few additions, we’re going to be a strong outfit next season.”

Killarney created history by reaching the Munster U16 Final, coming from behind in this pulsating semi-final played in Newcastlewest. Conditions were perfect and these two evenly matched, committed teams turned up intent on playing expansively. Both sides probed early on and a highlight was the intense battle between the powerful centre pairings. Killarney came closest to scoring in the opening quarter following a clean line break from out half Donnchadh Grealy and shortly after when winger Tomás Clifford came close in the right corner. Nenagh, however, registered the first

points when their No. 12 coolly slotted a 30-metre penalty. Enjoying a period of dominance, they piled forward, continuously recycling and spreading play through their powerful backline. Their power-play pressure was rewarded with a superbly worked team try under the posts for a seven-pointer. Killarney were finding it difficult to get a foothold and a high penalty count against them kept giving hard-won possession and territory back to a hungry Nenagh outfit. Five minutes before half-time, Nenagh struck again when a long lineout throw sailed into the hands of their grateful No. 6 tail jumper who casually touched down. At 15-0 it looked like only one winner at this stage. However, there is a reason why the moments directly before and after half-time

are called the championship moments. Killarney got dug into the opposition 22 from the restart and to their credit kept composed and focused, changing the point of attack through numerous phases. Tomás Clifford again came close on the left wing. Nenagh defended their line gallantly and it took a Darren Cronin turnover to regain possession before a final flurry of recycling released the tigerish Brendy O’Donoghue who got over in the right corner to revive hope. The half time score was Nenagh 15-5 Killarney. Killarney emerged re-energised and focused for the second half. They confidently secured the restart and launched the best move of the game. A superb looping, handling set-play from backs Liam Randles, Donnchadh Grealy, Ozdenis Koyun and a cutting line from Pádraig Talbot gave a determined Tomás Clifford the chance to sprint away and this time finish superbly. Now it was Killarney forcing the pace and a retreating Nenagh defence who were conceding the penalties. After 45 minutes, Donnchadh Grealy kicked a penalty to reduce the deficit to two points. Killarney were now dominating all the major collisions and were camped in the

75

opposing half. John McCarthy secured lineout ball and well-constructed rolling mauls came very close on two occasions. A number of close-in tapped penalties also met with teak tough tackling from the Nenagh defence. With 11 minutes remaining, a well-used penalty set play finally broke the dam when Pádraig Talbot powered through a flailing series of tackles to touchdown and give Killarney the lead. The conversion was added and a final insurance penalty with five minutes to go sealed the victory. Incredibly Killarney had overturned a 15-point deficit to score 23 unanswered points. The Killarney team as a unit rose to the occasion on the day. The front row of Adam Cronin, Czengis Koyun and Rob Nealon superbly led the frontline. The second row pairings of Darren Cronin, Cormac Rowe, Mike O’Donoghue and Shane McAllister tackled, counter-rucked and fought for every inch. A Drake-inspired Brendy O’Donoghue played his most aggressive game of the season. As usual No. 8 John McCarthy provided the steel in defence and lineout platform. Meanwhile, the returning Bailey O’Sullivan reminded everyone of his rugby prowess. Liam Randles deputised superbly for captain and scrumhalf Peter Walsh, passing, orchestrating the attack and box-kicking expertly. Out half Donnchadh Grealy repeatedly broke the defensive line and added eight points. Ozdenis Koyun dominated the centre collisions with powerful running and bone-crunching tackles. Pádraig Talbot again gave a powerful Man of the Match performance, this time playing in the centre. Tomás Clifford once again terrorised the defence with his speed and power. Dan Twomey and Jack Kenneally tackled superbly on the wings and full back Mikey Moriarty was rock solid under highball and counter-attacking. A word of congratulations also to a gallant and skilful Nenagh squad and coaching team who contributed immensely to a superb game. Killarney now look forward to the final in Musgrave Park against Skibbereen or Cashel/Kilfeacle. Keep in touch with club platforms for details.

| By Adam Moynihan Killarney Celtic extended their lead at the top of the Kerry U17 League with a solid win over Mastergeeha on Monday night, thanks in no small part to a midfield masterclass from dynamic duo Evan Looney and Cian McMahon.

Looney and McMahon lined out at centre mid for the Hoops and together with tricky No. 10 Cian McCarthy they dominated proceedings, featuring prominently in all three of their side’s well-taken goals. The hosts took the lead in the 15th minute when Looney whipped in a delightful, left-footed cross from deep

and winger Dylan O’Callaghan was on hand to direct an accurate header back across the goal and into the corner of the net. Geeha, who are currently seventh in the league, were up against a strong Celtic team but to their great credit they dug in and made it to half-time just one goal in arrears. The killer second goal arrived early in the second, however, and it was Looney again who did the damage, this time ghosting into the penalty area to apply a neat finish from 12 yards out. The vis-

itors’ heads understandably dropped thereafter and with Pádraic Looney and Jack Cooper in control at the back, Celtic never really looked like conceding. Looney and McMahon continued to pull the strings and the latter deservedly got his name on the scoresheet late on when he beat his man before rifling an unstoppable shot beyond the reach of the Geeha keeper from all of 22 yards. Geeha fought manfully throughout but they just couldn’t fashion a clear-cut opportunity, despite threatening on the counter-attack on numerous occasions in the second half. The effort certainly wasn’t lacking, especially not from Daniel Herlihy, Cian Murphy and Phil O’Leary who battled hard to stem the tide. All in all, coach Conor McCarthy will be pleased with Celtic’s showing in what was their penultimate game of the regular season. Their place in the league semi-finals is guaranteed and they now appear likely to finish first in Section B of the U17 League. They are currently five points clear of Ballyhar Dynamos in second and 12 points clear of Tralee Dynamos in third, although the latter have a couple of games in hand. Ballyhar can secure a top two finish by defeating Dynamos at home on Saturday. First and second in Section B will play first and second in Section A in the league semi-finals at the end of the season. On the other side of the draw, Rattoo Rovers and Park are favourites to advance.

Defending county champion ready for Circuit of Kerry

Full steam ahead for 40th Cartell.ie Rally of the Lakes

Killarney and District Motor Club’s plans are well-advanced for its 40th anniversary Cartell.ie Rally of the Lakes. | By Sean Moriarty As well as the rally itself the club is planning a range of other celebrations to mark the occasion. A demonstration rally, for pre-1990 rally cars, will run over 11 stages of the event, allowing fans to relive the glory days of Irish rallying. The usual Friday evening ceremonial start will switch from High Street to the Fairfield car park in a move that is as much for logistical reasons as it is for historical reasons. Organisers are concerned that the large number of fans expected in Killarney for the weekend will cause congestion in High Street so an alternative location was sought. Back in the 1970s and early 1980s, when the Circuit of Ireland Rally visited Killarney every Easter, the Ulster Automobile Club used the Fairfield car park as the overnight halt and that is one of the main reasons why this location was chosen for this year’s Rally of the Lakes start ramp formalities. Thanks to support from Killarney Munic-

77

ipal District Council, this will now be possible. The Fair Hill car park has been used as the overnight halt for the Rally of the Lakes in the past too but in more recent years the cars overnighted at the Lewis Road car park and this will continue this year. The club will host the official launch of the rally at the Gleneagle Hotel on Sunday, April 14. Meetings continue every Monday night at 8pm at the hotel and anyone with an interest in motorsport is welcome to attend. “It is full steam ahead for the next five weeks,” said clerk of the course Dermot Healy. A commemorative collectors programme will be published ahead of the event, looking back at four decades of history of the rally that was first run in December 1979 with Mike Marshall as the clerk of the course. He is still involved in the rally today. Entries are expected to open this week once Motorsport Ireland approval has been granted.

Defending Moriarty’s Centra Kingdom of Kerry Rally co-driving champion Damien Fleming will contest next Sunday’s Rose Hotel Circuit of Kerry Rally alongside Monaghan-based Toyota Corolla driver Raymond Conlon. Fleming won the inaugural Kingdom of Kerry title last season after guiding Conlon and local driver Mark Falvey to class wins on the four rounds last year. The local series, the only county championship for rallying in the country, is made up of four rounds. The Circuit of Kerry based in Tralee is opening round, while each day of the Rally of the Lakes is counted as one round. The Killarney Historic Rally in November is the final event in the series. “I rally all over the country but the Kerry championship is the home of rallying for me,” said the Kilcummin man. “It was a privilege to be the first winning navigator of the championship in 2019 and it would mean a lot if I could defend it again.” Rob Duggan from Killarney was the winning driver last season but he is currently based in Melbourne, Australia. Darren Young from Tralee finished second in the drivers’ championship last year and he is also entered in the Circuit of Kerry in his Honda Civic.

Circuit of Kerry latest Several members of Killarney and District Motor Club will contest next weekend’s Rose Hotel Circuit of Kerry rally. Leading local crew are Killarney father and son team Charlie and Johnny Hickey, who are fitting a new engine block to their Ford Escort Mk2. Headford’s David Slattery and Denis Coffey will contest their first Kerry Circuit of Kerry in seven or eight years in another Escort while their neighbours Denis Hickey and Seán Nolan will be considered front-runners in the 2400cc class. Denis Nagle and Timmy Kelly compete in a Nissan Micra. Rathmore’s Todd Falvey will be one of the leading historic class contestants in his ex-works Escort. David Griffin from Castlemaine, driving

a Toyota Corolla, is another historic rally contestant.

Midland Moto Rally John McCarthy from Kilcummin was the leading Kerry competitor on Sunday’s Midland Moto Rally in Longford. Co-driving for Peter Wilson they finished second in their class in a Ford Escort. Damien Fleming alongside Raymond Conlon was fighting for the class win until their Toyota Corolla suffered a puncture on stage six and they dropped six minutes.

Overseas interest in Circuit of Kerry This year’s Rose Hotel Circuit of Kerry has attracted overseas entries from England Scotland and Wales. One of the leading overseas entries is Welshman Dai Roberts. The Carmarthenshire-based competitor is no stranger to Ireland having contested many of the country’s rallies as a co-driver including the recent West Cork International Rally. “I am buzzing, I can’t wait,” he said. “I am coming purely for the craic and all going well I well be back in Kerry for the Killarney Historic Rally in November.” Scottish driver Billy Cowe makes the long trip from Cockburnspath in Berwickshire, Scotland to Tralee, a journey of over 800kms not including ferry crossings. He has competed in Mayo and Clare in the past, but this is his first trip to Kerry. London Irish Motor Club will be well represented on the entry list which is due to be published this weekend. Galway man John Reddington is the current Flanders International Rally Challenge champion. He is chasing his third Belgian title in a row this year and is using the Circuit of Kerry as a shakedown event ahead of round one of the FIRC in late April. Hertfordshire-based Listowel man Ross Hilliard will make his rally debut on the Circuit of Kerry. His father Ray and uncle John are longtime supporters of the Circuit of Kerry. He will drive a Volkswagen Polo on the event, a car he recently purchased from fellow UK-based Killarney man Mick Smith.

Italian rally success for Nagle Paul Nagle and Craig Breen took a creditable fourth overall on their maiden Italian championship rally at the weekend. The Kerry/Waterford pairing, fresh from their victory on the previous weekend’s West Cork Rally, tackled the Rally Il Ci-

occo e Valle del Serchio in the country’s Tuscany region on Friday and Saturday. Driving a Skoda Fabia R5 for the first time they set one fastest time out of the 14 stages that ran to finish 16.6 seconds behind Giandomenico Basso in a similar Fabia. This was Basso’s fourth win on this rally.
