Two Killarney roof scammers arrested Monday in Sydney

Police in Sydney have arrested two Killarney men on foot on an alleged roof scams in the Australian city. Patrick Michael O'Brien, who is believed to have previously lived in Ballyspillane, was arrested by New South Wales Police near Sydney Airport on Monday. The following day Tom Humphreys, who is originally from County Cork but had an address in Ballyspillane, was arrested at Sydney Airport while trying to flee the country. Police allege O’Brien defrauded two women living in Sydney of $900,000 after he promised to repair their roofs. He defrauded a 70-year-old woman of

$276,300 after carrying out work between May 2019 and August 2019 and that he defrauded a 56-year-old woman of $623,180 after conducting unfinished work on the roof of her home between September 2019 and December 2019. Officers also allege that 41-year-old Humphreys posed as a tradesman and defrauded a 70-year-old woman of $103,500 after conducting unfinished work on the roof of her home in Dover Heights area of Sydney between January 2019 and February 2019.

SCAM: New South Wales Police issued this photo of Patrick Michael O'Brien

O’Brien was identified while sitting in a car near the city’s airport on Monday of this week. “He was taken to Kogarah Police Station, where the warrant was executed for the offences of receive property stolen outside NSW, and dishonestly obtain property by deception; he was also charged with a second count of dishonestly obtained property by deception over the Stanmore incident,” a

NSW Police statement said. On Tuesday Police detained Humphreys at Sydney Airport. “He was taken to Mascot Police Station where he was charged with eight counts of dishonestly obtaining benefit by deception,” said a police statement. Both men were refused bail and will face court again in June. It is not confirmed that the two incidents are linked.

Mayor thanks Killarney Advertiser team SUPPORT

KILLARNEY

Killarney Mayor Michael Gleeson has praised the Killarney Advertiser in its efforts to keep the community updated during the height of the pandemic. Killarney’s number one weekly news title – and the town’s longest-serving news magazine – continued to publish throughout the crisis. The Killarney Advertiser’s team, despite the challenge of working within COVID-19 restrictions, delivered more exclusive news content than any other title over the last few weeks. The efforts of the team have been recognised by the Mayor, who is still cocooning as he and his wife are both

over 70. “As we continue in our strange new world of safe distancing, hand washing and for some of us, varying degrees of cocooning I, as Mayor of the Municipal District and as individual wish to express sincere gratitude to the Management and Staff at Killarney Advertiser,” he said. “Your thoughtfulness and the co-operation of the wonderful postwomen and men have ensured that we were able to remain in touch with the wider world. It also, very importantly, means that even in our isolation we do not feel alone and forgotten. That feeling of still being part of the community greatly helped and is continuing to keep many of us positive and optimistic.”

Michael Fassbender is being tipped to replace Daniel Craig as the next James Bond. In recent weeks the local Hollywood A-lister has seen his odds drop from 16/1 to 5/1 by betting agency BoyleSports. The Fossa man earned an Oscar nomination in the best supporting actor category for his role as slave owner Edwin Epps in ‘12 Years a Slave’ back in 2013. One of his main rivals for the role, according to BoyleSports, is Cork actor Cillian Murphy who is currently available at 14/1 having originally been as big as 33/1 and prompting more rivalry between the two counties. “Michael Fassbender is the latest actor to be linked and backed to become the next James Bond when Daniel Craig hangs up his boots as OO7 later this year. The man raised in Killarney, County Kerry, is now an 5/1 chance from 8/1 having been as big as 16/1 a couple of weeks ago,”

BOND: Michael Fassbender has been tipped as the next actor to play James Bond

said Leon Blanche, Spokesperson for BoyleSports. However, a Killarney source who is close to the Fossa actor said: “He won’t be doing that at all – it won’t happen.” The 2/1 favourite remains McMafia star James Norton although the support for him has dropped over the last few months.

New university campus calls for St Finan’s site | By Sean Moriarty

EXCLUSIVE

The Mayor of Killarney, Michael Gleeson, is calling for the former St Finan’s Hospital to be developed into a campus of the newly formed Munster Technological University.

Clarity sought on 14-day quarantines at Kerry Airport Airlines and passengers say that the Government's requirements to self-isolate once they arrive in the country are unworkable and are calling for more clarity on the issue. | By Sean Moriarty Ryanair is set to recommence flight operations at Kerry Airport on July 1, with its limited schedule for the first weeks of July gradually returning to a more-frequent service as the weeks go by. Quarantine rules came into effect yesterday (Thursday) where people arriving in Ireland from any other country will, by law, have to fill in a form called the COVID-19 Passenger Locator Form, saying where they can be contacted. They will also be asked to self-isolate for 14 days. Last week the EU issued guidelines to ensure that Europe’s citizens can return to flying within the European Union in the coming weeks in a manner that best protects their health and the health of airline crew. These guidelines now allow Europe’s tourism industry to restart in July and August. However, both Ireland and the UK have taken a different approach. Ryanair welcomed the EU advice on face masks, which reflects its own, previously issued, health protocols as it returns to widespread flying on July 1 but the airline has called on the Irish and UK Government to drop the 14-day quarantine measures, which are now being scrapped in most other European countries in favour of face masks and social distancing. “14-day quarantines are ineffective and unimplementable. Requiring international arrivals to quarantine only after they have used multiple public transport providers to get from the airport

to their ultimate destination has no basis in science or medicine. We strongly urge Europe’s Governments, especially those in Ireland and the UK, to mandate to the wearing of face masks for airline, train and (London) underground passengers, as this is the best and most effective way to limit the spread of COVID-19 in public transport environments where social distancing is not possible,” said Ryanair’s Group CEO Michael O’Leary. London-based Killarney woman Tara Cronin is a frequent visitor to her hometown. Most of her journeys are over the course of a long-weekend as Ryanair’s timetable from Luton and Stansted and her London-based work schedules can easily work together. “I can't wait to get home for a few days once the flights are restored but what am I supposed to do? Isolate in Killarney for two weeks, and return to London and do the same, a long weekend would require a month off,” she said. Tara based her comments on the fact that anyone in the Schengen (EU countries and Switzerland) free travel area will not have to quarantine for two weeks and not out of disrespect towards health and safety requirements. “Europe’s citizens can travel safely on their summer holidays wearing face masks and observing temperature protocols, but 14-day quarantines have no scientific basis, are unimplementable and unnecessary in circumstances where airline, train and underground passengers wear face masks where social distancing isn’t possible,” added O’Leary.

Earlier this week the Institute Technology in Tralee and Cork Institute of Technology announced their amalgamation to form the new university. From January 2021 Tralee will become an university town. The mayor says the former hospital site, a landmark and historic building which was constructed in 1852, is the ideal location to locate a satellite campus of the new university as it sits roughly midway between the two main colleges. Mayor Gleeson has been a long-time campaigner on behalf of the hospital and always said he would not like it to be sold to private bidders – an event that seemed inevitable until this week. He is calling for the site’s owner, the HSE, and the Department of Education (along with management of the new university) to sit down and thrash out a deal to keep the hospital in public ownership. “It is the perfect place for distant learning, something that we will become the

new norm and something that is already being done by the great universities of the world.” Killarney has a great tradition in offering third-level training courses to Kerry students, especially those who wanted to follow a career in the tourism and hospitality sectors. The former Torc Great Southern Hotel, on the site of the current cinema development, used to be converted in to a training centre during the winter months. Mayor Gleeson gave an example of how University College Cork failed to secure nearby hospital property in Cork City and now that it is expanding there is a degree of regret that these properties were not purchased when they came on the market. “St Finan’s is a building of huge historical and architectural importance since its construction on 1852,” he added. ”Both [college] bodies need to sit down together and engage with the HSE on a national level, UCC now regrets the loss of the nearby hospital. St Finan’s is an ideal place and should not be left fall in to private hands – or worse – dereliction.” Munster Technological University will be the first regional technological university in Ireland.

Taking advantage of quiet times to complete road works Cllr Donal Grady has praised Kerry County Council after it honoured a promise to re-surface parts of New Street. ipal District meeting earlier this year. This week contractors took advantage of the quieter levels of traffic in the town centre and, while the street was operating under a one-way system, completed the works in record time. “Well done to the council and contractor for standing over their word,” he told the Killarney Advertiser.

Dredging to commence at Ross Lake boat mooring | By Sean Moriarty Dredging works at the Ross Castle boat mooring station are set to begin in the coming weeks.

EXCLUSIVE

The news will be welcomed by Killarney boat men and women who have been calling for action for some time after they raised concerns that silt in mooring area was causing an obstruction. The National Parks and Wildlife Service has told Deputy Michael Healy-Rae TD that they are preparing to do the work.

“I want to thank the OPW in advance for agreeing to removing the silt and dirt build up which has been obstructing the boats that tie up at Ross Castle,” Healy-Rae said. “The local boatmen are very important in our locality and I was very glad to represent them in their request to have their tie up facility dredged as it has been hindering them a lot particularly over the last year. When the works will be completed it will be a great improvement and I thank all involved in this matter.”

BREAKTHROUGH:John Fleming of Muckross Ice Cream

Muckross Creamery products coming to a store near you soon Now in its seventh year, SuperValu Food Academy is a unique food business development programme between SuperValu, Bord Bia and the Local Enterprise Offices. The programme helps early-stage Irish food and drink businesses to get their start in the food retail sector with their first, all-important supermarket listing in SuperValu stores. One of the Kerry food start-ups who came through the programme and who last week started to list in SuperValu stores is Muckross Ice Cream, which is produced by Muckross Creamery. Founded by fifth generation dairy farmer John Fleming, who has diversified the family farm business in Killarney, Muckross produces a delicious range of ice cream using its own fresh milk, fresh cream and free-range eggs. Before the “big bang” as John called the lockdown, Muckross Creamery was supplying hotels like the Great Southern and The Brehon as well as the cinema and tourist attractions like the Killarney Brewing Company and Dinis

Cottage. Selection for the Academy could not have been at a better timed and he started supplying Daly’s SuperValue just as the first wave of re-starts were coming into operation. “We started selling to the public last June and, as time went on, we caught a few breaks before the big bang,” John told the Killarney Advertiser. “We have been in Daly’s now for two weeks and hoped to be in Garvey’s in Tralee and Castleisland by now, we hope that will happen this week or next week, but Daly’s is going so well we have been just about coping with that. The timing could not have been better and the programme is so good, we would have learned a lot about marketing and social media even if were not selected.” SuperValu is looking for additional food start-ups in Kerry to join its Food Academy programme. Interested parties contact your Local Enterprise Office for an application form on www.localenterprise.ie by Friday, June 26.

Owner offers council solution to Well Lane South issue | By Sean Moriarty The owners of a gated delivery entrance at the bottom of Well Lane South say they are willing to engage with Killarney Municipal Council so pedestrian access to the lane way from the Beech Road/New Street car parks can be improved. The lane way, which recently received a €40,000 grant towards improvement works, has long courted controversy. Cllr Donal Grady has labelled the lane as “the worst in Ireland” while Tidy Town Competition judges consistently give the area bad marks. The recent grant will be put towards surface repair works. The gated entrance at the bottom of the lane was built in the 1990s as previ-

ously there were concerns about unauthorised vehicle access to the lane, and attempts to place bollards there were unsuccessful. The property is owned by local auctioneer Michael Coughlan who says he is willing to engage with the council and sell his property to help solve the access issue in the lane. “The time the gate was built, it was all done the way the council wanted it, the bollards kept getting removed late at night and this was seen as a solution at that time,” Michael Coughlan told the Killarney Advertiser. “We came close to deals in the past but for one reason or another it fell down at the last minute, engineers retired, the town council’s powers were removed and so on. I am willing to talk to them and see what can be done.”

Hoteliers call for government support 15,700 jobs Kerry Jobs at risk | By Sean Moriarty

EXCLUSIVE

Hotel and guesthouse owners in Kerry and across the country are calling on the Government to introduce measures that will tackle the catastrophic crisis facing many businesses due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Welcoming the positive trend in cases this week, Ms Bernadette Randles, Chair of the Kerry branch of the IHF, acknowledged the great progress being made by the Government, the Chief Medical Officer, health professionals and society in general in suppressing the disease. She said that it was now time to address the need for people to have livelihoods after the pandemic. Ms Randles called on the Government to urgently seek assistance from the proposed EU Recovery Fund being set up to combat the economic slump caused by the coronavirus pandemic, which is forecast to be the worst in a century throughout Europe. She said a package of specific supports is required that recognises the unique challenges facing Ireland’s largest indigenous industry. “The June Bank Holiday traditionally marks the start of the holiday season, yet thousands of tourism businesses across the country remain closed due to the pandemic, including 90% of hotels, and the majority of the industry’s 260,000 employees are laid off. 70 per cent of tourism jobs are based outside Dublin, which highlights its vital role in spreading employment opportunities and prosperity across the

entire country. Here in Kerry tourism supported 15,700 jobs and generated €592m in local revenues before this crisis. Further delays in providing support measures could have devastating implications, particularly for rural Ireland, that may take decades to recover” she said. “While the various business and employment supports that have been introduced already are very welcome, they do not go far enough. Some industries, like tourism, have been far more severely affected and face a more challenging road to recovery and this is not being adequately recognised. Tourism proved itself to be a powerful engine for economic growth following the last recession, creating some 90,000 new jobs. With the right supports now, it can be again but time is of the essence.”

STAND BACK AND DELIVER: The Killarney Advertiser’s dedicated delivery driver John Leahy’s Friday delivery run is getting back to pre-crisis normality but like all of us he is obeying the two-metre social distancing rules. Photo Sean Moriarty

Your favourite Friday read needs a little social distance | By Sean Moriarty We know you can’t wait to get your hands on your favourite weekly read but spare a thought for the Killarney Advertiser’s dedicated delivery driver John Leahy. His Friday delivery run is getting back to pre-crisis normality but like all of us he is obeying the two-metre social distancing rules. It seems the Killarney Advertiser is so popular people can’t wait to get it before it hits the shelves and they are ap-

proaching him on the street. John loves the banter on his delivery run but he is asking for our readers patience as he, like all of us, adjusts to the new normal. “I get why people are so keen to get the magazine on a Friday,” he says. “If you see me outside a shop, bear with me, it will be ready for collection inside in a few minutes.” Are you a retailer who has recently reopened and are looking for copies of the Killarney Advertiser. Email info@killarneyadvertiser.ie and we will arrange a delivery for you.

Hopes that 'Light up Killarney' will get a second chance | By Sean Moriarty It was supposed to be Killarney’s way of saying thank you. Instead a yellow weather warning put an end to ambitious project that was supposed to “Light up Killarney.” Last Thursday night a group of business people involved in the hospitality sector wanted to say thanks to frontline workers. The plan was to turn off business and street lights in the town centre and at 1030pm re-light the town as symbolic journey from a dark times into better, brighter times. Additionally, members of the emergency services, Garda , Fire and Ambulance were to park their emergency vehicles

at strategic locations in the town – blue lights flashing. Local musicians were to stand on street corners and belt out some of their favourite tunes. The whole event was to be recorded so it could be shared on local social media platforms. No one told the weather man and at the last minute the whole thing got called off – a bitter blow to those who had put so much work into Killarney’s unique way of saying thank you. “It was very disappointing but there was no way we could run it,” one of the organisers Kelly Ann Sweeny told the Killarney. “We are going to try again, it is just a case of regrouping. It means contacting every business in town and that is no problem as there is enough of us there. We are hopeful and everyone is in favour.”

Columnist ANNE LUCEY gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry and beyond

The National Park needs to be centre of Green Party The Green party is hoping to reinvent itself in Killarney and sees a gap in the market. It has selected local man Diarmaid Griffin, a tour guide and organic farmer a full four years ahead of the local elections. But is there really a gap in the market? The original Green party in Killarney was a complex beast – and not at all the simple history-making story that the historic election to the Killarney UDC of the first Green in Ireland might lead us to assume. The seat was held onto when young Marcus Counihan resigned after a hectic two years. The small group could not have it said they couldn’t hold out, after such a break-through. And Michael Lucey

stepped forward into the breach. It was to be the longest period in local government in history too lasting from 1985 until 1994 . The Greens in Killarney emerged at a most fractious time - the time of pitched battles over noisy engines on boats small and big on the lakes; the attempt by the Killarney Golf course to grab much of the demesne in a Trojan Horse arrangement; the realisation of just what of an enemy

How many does it take to flush a toilet? The lack of public toilets is yet another of the great contradictions of the pandemic. For all sorts of reasons we can be short taken in ordinary times. But with long queues outside supermarkets, golf courses and parks like Muckross, how healthy is it to have to hold on until you drive maybe half an hour home after half an hour qeuing and then shopping? People are having to go in lanes, trees and bushes around golf courses and

parks. Surely this is a public health issue. I tried to find out last week what the situation was with toilets and it took me three working days and several agencies. First of all the council: they were following public health guidelines and would review once told to ( they so good our council) Next the HSE:“ Public facilities are a matter for the local authority (council), urination on streets is a matter for the Gardaí and Back to Work Protocols regard-

rhododendron was becoming; the terrible pollution in Lough Leane, and the clean-ups of the lake shore organised by the Greens with great help from the late Norma Lougheed and the Girl Guides. If the Greens are to make a comeback, it is in this gaping area of the National Park which no one party or independent seems truly committed towards. The best effort in years was made by Cllr John Joe Culloty – a big turaround for FF, a party which as much as FG in the town traditionally saw the park as only a cash cow for business. FF and FG have borrowed the Green clothes … and FF are now a long way from John O’Donoghoue in the Dail in the 1980s dismissing the Greens as “ the Brown Rice and Sandals brigade.” There is a sense out there that today’s Greens are pretty religious about the environment– certainly they seem to have a kind of reformer’s zeal. The new Kerry greens need to act local more than they think global, methinks. Perhaps they will make a start with Killarney National Park? They might also have a look at generating electricity once again – Killarney was electrified before London - from the Flesk River. But how will the purists among them reconcile harnessing rivers with not disturbing the pearl mussel and the environment? ing retail facilities are a matter for the Health and Safety Authority. Next the guards who responded uncharacteristically quickly (a reflection perhaps of the huge overstaffing numbers right now in the guards and little enough to do) – urinating in public was still an offence and the legislation was being enforced. After this the Department of Health said it was not a matter for them and they referred me to the Department of An Taoiseach who have yet to respond. I got onto the OPW who are in charge of toilets in the Killarney National Park. Now, how many is this? For some reason an old ditty – Killarney was always known for its wit - came into my mind. It dates to the time people moved into houses with loos the wonder of

The State’s patronising and suspicious attitude The central realisation for me in this time of COVID19 and the handling of direct provision centres and care homes is how little our authorities and organisations trust us a people. I would go so far as to say there is distrust. A patronising and suspicious attitude on behalf of the State towards its own citizens has been laid bare. If the handling of the situation in Cahersiveen has taught me anything, it is just how pervasive this distrust and suspicion is. The Department of Justice has been coy, has been awkward. It has been recalcitrant and has used every trick and excuse in the book from data protection to commercial sensitivity to responsibility resting with other agencies like the HSE to avoid giving answers. But what happened in Cahersiveen, where at the height of a pandemic, the health of the whole town was put at risk, what happened when the story began to emerge? People were not racist, people did not act badly and instead acted with extreme dignity and kindness. Life is a lot more complex and people are a lot more decent than our public services choose to acknowledge. People are also a lot more intelligent than given credit for - perhaps even more intelligent than the mandarins in charge of our public services.

a flushing loo was captured by the town intelligentsia of the 40s and 50s: “Pull the chain and down the Demesne, goodbye auld s—te of mine!” Oh that matters were so straightforwardly down the Demesne again.

Killarney Community College would like to acknowledge and thank the unbelievable dedication and effort on the part of all our students, parents, faculty members and auxiliary staff during these strange and unprecedented times. Our teachers and students have engaged in remote learning for the last ten weeks via Microsoft teams in order to proceed with their curriculums and excel in their subjects . We have ran a very successful virtual sports day while our care team have constantly been in touch with the parents and students who have found this process difficult and daunting. We have endeavoured to continue to look after the educational, physical and wellbeing needs of everyone connected with the college. Never has our association with the word community been so important in our lives. Without everyone’s help, the transition from the class room to home would not have been possible. Once again we would sincerely like to thank everyone for playing their part. Continue to stay safe and we look forward to seeing you in September.

Innovative new solution to keep small businesses in Kerry smiling Elite Event Management, the team behind Ring of Beara Cycle Kenmare, Quest Killarney, Quest Kenmare and Run Killarney, have launched an innovative new product to keep small businesses in Kerry smiling during these difficult times. This exciting social project is a gift box full of produce and crafts sourced in Kerry, packaged together beautifully and ready to order and ship to anywhere in the world. The Kerry based company are usually organising sports events across the country but due to COVID-19 restrictions their business has been stopped in its tracks. “Our business went from thriving and optimistic to free fall, seemingly overnight,” owner Oliver Kirwan said. “Our normal work takes place in the world of sport events such as the Ring of Beara Cycle Kenmare, Quest Kenmare, Quest Killarney and Run Killarney. We brought our team together and came upon the idea of ‘Box of Smiles’. It gives us great satisfaction that we can now work on a project that helps our own company survive through this crisis but also help other small businesses in Killarney and Kenmare such as Killarney Chocolate, Felicia Thomas Artist, Suchness Jewellery, Baborsbeans Cof-

fee, Norman McCloskey Photography, Kenmare Soap amongst others. Each box is filled with high quality products sourced from local small businesses including coffee roasters and bakers, creatives and artisans, tea connoisseurs and candle creators. ‘Box of Smiles’ is also a wonderful way for people to keep in touch with Irish creativity in their locality, gift a loved one or express gratitude to an employee.” ‘Box of Smiles’ have seven gift boxes available to purchase online including Keep Kenmare Smiling, Keep Killarney Smiling, Keep West Cork Smiling, Keep Cork City Smiling, Keep Dublin Smiling, Keep Galway Smiling and Keep Ireland Smiling. Every box purchased will help small local businesses throughout the country maintain a revenue stream in the challenging environment they have abruptly found themselves in. It is also an uncertain time for organisations and their employees with possible indefinite remote working and changes in routine and structure. ‘Box of Smiles’ are also available as branded employee care packages and are a meaningful way of maintaining links between employers and their teams whilst showing appreciation for their resolve and dedication. Driving schools call for changes to the two-metre social rules | By Sean Moriarty A Kilcummin driving instructor is hoping that the government will restrict its 2-metre social distancing rules so driving schools can return to business. Denis Enright, who operates Enright’s Driving School from his Killbrean base, says he cannot return to work with the 2 metre rule in place. His calls come as 9,500 drivers a month are being added to the backlog of 20,000 who have had their driving test suspended because of the coronavirus. It is feared the delay will create a widening gulf between cities and rural Ireland, where tens of thousands of peo-

ple will be left without cars. “I will only go back to work once [the restriction] is reduced to one metre, you can’t do metres in car,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “I am waiting on an email from the Road Safety Authority before I can go back to work but I hope the restriction can be reduced.” Denis is also concerned that his business has taken an unseen hit as a result of the restrictions. He removed to ‘Driving Instructor” sign from the roof of the school’s Ford Focus as he was concerned that by leaving it on would give the false impression that he was still operating. The net result is that he is losing valuable exposure and marketing opportunities that could result in further losses.

July Dates for Killarney Races confirmed | By Sean Moriarty Last week the Killarney Advertiser exclusively revealed the plans that Killarney Racecourse was putting in place to ensure the safety of those allowed attend. As it stands the meeting will remain as non-spectator and will only be open to jockeys, trainers and essential racecourse staff. Last week, course manager Philip O’Brien said it was the track’s intention to run the week long July meeting on alternative days and this has now been confirmed by the sports governing body. The number of race days at Killarney in July has been reduced from five to

three which will be stand-alone fixtures on Tuesday July 7, Monday July 13 and Wednesday July 15. The two lost days will be rescheduled later in the year. “There will be eight-race cards run at every opportunity where stable capacity allows, with the protocols requiring one stable per horse for hygiene reasons,” said Jason Morris, HRI’s Director of Racing. O’Brien said last week that he hopes that the lost May race days can be rescheduled to October. There is no confirmation of these dates yet and now, in addition, the two July dates will be fighting for places on what could be a very congested calendar.

Killarney chef introduces children to the joy of cooking | By Sean Moriarty

Well-known Killarney chef Chad Byrne is set to appear on a series of on-line cookery classes aimed at primary school children who want to learn new skills during lockdown.

SOMETHING MISSING: The glamour of the Dawn Milk Ladies Day, one of the social highlights of the year in Killarney, will be sorely missed this year. Photo By Domnick Walsh

Byrne, who is the head chef at the Brehon Hotel, is no stranger to online cookery classes. He is the founder of Chef Collab, mentoring programme for apprentice chefs and the Kerry County Cooking Championships. As a result of these and other projects he is involved in he has participated in several initiatives promoting

work place opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities and during the early days of lockdown he produced a series of online cookery classes. The classes got the attention of the National Parents Council, a national organisation that supports the parents of children in primary or early education, and they invited him to produce a series of cooking classes aimed at children. “The classes are based on simple tasks and a bit of fun,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “It is nothing too complicated and a bit of craic.” The programmes will be broadcast on npc.ie and registered parents and teachers will get an email in advance of the first broadcast.

| By Sean Moriarty Killarney Fire and Rescue has taken delivery of a new jeep-mounted high pressure pump which will help in tackling gorse fires in remote areas and incidents in confined spaces where fire trucks cannot gain access. The new pump was delivered to Killarney Fire Station, while a second one was assigned to Caherciveen Fire Station this week.

The pumps are also fitted with a road de-greaser sprayer which will allow for a faster clean up time following an oil spill or similar such incidents. The new Killarney pump has a capacity for 300 litres of water which triples the capacity of the former pump based at the station. “It is ideal for bog land fires where you can't get a truck.” Station officer Paudie Mangan told the Killarney Advertiser. “It will help in lane ways too, where there might be a dustbin fire, it will allow quicker access than a truck.”

Take the time to enjoy what is on your doorstep | Words by Sean Moriarty • Photos by Grigoriy Geniyevskiy The world of lockdown has presented the perfect opportunity to do the things we normally would not have time to do. At this time of year we would be in the middle of another busy tourist season. The June Bank Holiday weekend would mark the real start of the season, big events like BikeFest Killarney would at the centre of our thoughts. We would be very busy. We would not have time to discover what is on our doorstep. With the early arrival of the summer sun, Killarney, her lakes and parks are at their best. There are no tourists around.

It is all ours. Get out there, walk that lake shore, visit Ross Castle, explore The Demesne and take in the beauty that surrounds you. This time next year, hopefully, we will be too busy to get the chance so don’t waste the opportunity, we won’t get it again. *Please observe social distancing rules and don’t go climbing mountains or swimming in lakes and putting our emergency services under pressure but do enjoy it while you have some time on your hands. SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL

Beauty - By Jill O'Donoghue

The importance of Serums I’m often asked about serums and their uses. Now, more than ever, while you're not able to have salon facials, it's time to treat yourself to one or two serums to enhance your skincare routine. No point doing a face mask and not using a serum after. Serums always go under your moisturisers, day or night. One of the most striking benefits of face serums is their ability to help lock moisture into the skin. This prevents wrinkles from the Basal layer of your skin. Formulas with ingredients such as hyaluronic acid can improve the moisture content of the skin whilst strengthening the skin barrier for a hydrated and healthy-looking complexion. While serums are no doubt nourishing and weed out many skin problems at the root, they also come with visible benefits and perks. 1 Your skin texture will improve drastically thanks to the collagen and Vitamin C content, becoming firmer and smoother, leading to visibly younger-looking skin. I’d recommend Sothys specific wrinkle serum.

2 There will be fewer spots, scars, pimples and other marks, as they start lightening with regular use of a serum, particularly one with plant concentrates being used. This is done in a holistic manner, without the use of harmful peels and chemicals. Help to prevent dark spots and pigmentations setting in. Recommend Sothys unifying youth serum. 3 You'll see reduction in the size of open pores, which in turn give rise to fewer blackheads and whiteheads. Recommend, Sothys unifying you the serum or detoxifying youth serum. 4 Firmer, tighter, lifted skin helping to limit skin slackening to time, firm and visibly lift the features. Recommend Sothys Firming Serum. 5 With the use of serums, there will be less inflammation, redness and dryness. Instead, the skin will look dewy fresh and moisturised. Recommend, Sothys Hydra 3HA Serum. For a free skin consultation, or if you have any questions, call Jill 064 6632966.

Urgent appeal to return Trócaire boxes Trócaire has launched an urgent appeal for supporters in Co. Kerry to return donations from their Trócaire boxes online or over the phone, warning that a 60% decline in donations to its Lenten Appeal has put many of its life-saving programmes at risk. The charity’s biggest fundraising campaign has been severely affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, with supporters unable to return their Trócaire boxes due to ongoing restrictions. Trócaire’s Lenten Appeal raised €178,546.91 last year in Co. Kerry through the Diocese of Kerry. Twothirds of this money comes from Tró-

caire boxes distributed through parishes and schools. Travel and social restrictions – including the closure of parishes and schools – means most boxes have not been returned this year. Trócaire today warned that unless donations from the boxes are returned, it is facing a massive funding crisis that will impact directly on the 3 million people who rely on its work overseas. Trócaire CEO Caoimhe de Barra said: “Every year people in Co. Kerry fill their Trócaire boxes to support the world’s poorest people. But the closure of churches and schools means that support is not getting through this year. “Thousands of boxes are sitting in homes right across Ireland and unless

these generous donations are returned, we won’t be able to provide life-saving support to some of the poorest people in the world. “We are asking our supporters in Co. Kerry to ‘make your Trócaire box count’. Please count or estimate what is in your box and donate the equivalent amount online, over the phone or via post. Many parishes have their own local arrangements in place for collecting Trócaire boxes, so people can also contact their local parish to see if it is possible to return their box within social distancing guidelines.” In addition to its vital ongoing programmes, Trócaire is also responding to the Covid-19 crisis. The virus is present in all 20 countries where Trócaire provides support. The charity is responding by providing support in all regions, including 11 countries in Africa where over 100,000 Coronavirus cases have been confirmed. Trócaire’s response includes providing soap, water and hand-washing stations, supporting quarantine facilities and funding expert medical care. Caoimhe de Barra said: “The funding crisis comes at a time when we are working to reduce the spread of the Coronavirus in all 20 countries where we work. People in countries like Somalia and South Sudan are incredibly vulnerable to this virus, while lockdowns and travel restrictions have plunged millions more into extreme poverty. “The contents of each and every Trócaire box, no matter how small, come together to make a significant difference to the lives of the people we help. We have done – and continue to do – so much to protect each other. Now it is time to protect the world’s most vulnerable.”

Twitter issues fake news alert on Trump’s posts President Trump has a habit of blasting the media when they don’t follow his narrative on events. Regular cries of “Fake news” can be heard from the pulpit of the White House during press briefings. His own favourite method of delivering news is through social media

channel Twitter where he often delivers his own version of events or attacks rivals and opponents. Social media platforms don’t have the best reputation when it comes to separating fact from fiction but, in fairness, they are trying to address this by directing readers to “fact check” an article before sharing it or believing its contents.

Historic rocket launch postponed It should have been a historic moment for Space Exploration but the weather gods conspired against it. On Wednesday of this week it was hoped to launch of two NASA astronauts on a rocket built by SpaceX, the rocket company started by billionaire Elon Musk It would mark the start of an era of human spaceflight that extends beyond national space agencies. The launch was supposed to mark the first time that American astronauts were thrust into space since the Space Shuttle programme was discontinued nearly a decade ago. NASA and SapceX called off the mission at the last minute with a new window of opportunity coming on Saturday at 10:22 p.m and on Sunday at 10 p.m – Irish time.

Earlier this week, the Twitter watchdogs issued warnings on two of Trumps tweets. In the two Tweets, Mr. Trump spoke out against the use of mailin ballots in the upcoming US election, claiming they were "fraudulent" and warning "mail boxes will be robbed". Under the posts, Twitter added a link saying: "Get the facts about mail-in ballots.” Trump in turn, labelled the move as an attack on free speech, the irony of his attacks on the press in the past going straight over his head.

ESB to offer helping hand to get communities back on their feet ESB has launched a special Covid-19 response emergency fund for the communities surrounding its wind farms across the island of Ireland and the UK, including Grousemount and Mount Eagle in Co Kerry.

JOINING FORCES: President of IT Tralee Dr Brendan O’Donnell, with his Cork counterpart Dr Barry O’Connor

Tralee IT gains university status in historic merger with Cork IT The consortium of Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) and Institute of Technology Tralee (ITT) is set to become a Technological University. Munster Technological University (MTU) will be officially established in January 2021 and will be Ireland’s newest Technological University. Munster Technological University (MTU) will be a multi-campus technological university, contributing to the region through the provision of academic programmes that support student development and opportunities, education and research. Mayor of Kerry, Cllr Niall Kelleher said the announcement was an enormous boost for County Kerry and provided new and exciting opportunities for education, research, business and economic development in the county. ‘The conferring of university status on the new Munster Technological University will greatly enhance Kerry’s reputation for top-class education facilities and will greatly assist Kerry in attracting high-level research and investment in many areas. “The two institutes share an ethos of excellence, an ambition to serve the needs of our communities, and a vision of higher education provision that is inno-

vative, responsive, entrepreneurial and forward-looking. The new Technological University will grow from the foundations laid down by CIT and ITT. MTU will be the first regionally based Technological University in Ireland. Our ambition is to have a lasting positive impact economically, socially and culturally on the South-West region and beyond; and our values will guide our relationships with students, with staff, our partners and the wider community of stakeholders” said Mr Lionel Alexander, Chair of IT Tralee’s Governing Body: “We are delighted to receive confirmation that we will formally establish MTU in 2021. This is a time of unprecedented challenge for the region, Ireland and the world. MTU will play a leadership role in the strategic development of the SouthWest region as we work towards national and global recovery. The availability of a skilled professional workforce is essential to the creation of Irish companies and in attracting new companies to locate in Ireland. As a new university, MTU will develop and enhance curricula and research opportunities through stakeholder engagement ensuring that the changing demands of regional enterprise, the professions, and the community are realized,” said President of IT Tralee Dr Brendan O’Donnell.

The aim of the fund – amounting to a total of €238,000– is to deliver targeted services and support to the most vulnerable during the Covid-19 pandemic. ESB employees located in the vicinity of our wind farms can also volunteer their services to support projects in their communities as part of its staff volunteer programme during these challenging times. The emergency fund will be administered by SECAD, a local development company experienced in supporting communities to maximise the use of community funding. Application are welcome from existing community-based not-for-profit and voluntary organisations involved in the current provision of community services and supplies such as food, medicines, PPE and educational material. These projects should complement the support measures that are currently being rolled out by local authorities and others, such as The Community Call initia-

tive. Welcoming the funding, Frank Kelly, ESB Wind Operations Stakeholder Manager, said: “At ESB, we want our wind farms to have clear and lasting benefits for all. Now, more than ever, we want to support our communities during these unprecedented times. As witnessed in recent months, people all over the country are working together to look after our most vulnerable through the provision of essential supplies and services. Through the establishment of this special Covid-19 wind farm community fund, we can help ensure that such good work can continue.” Each year, ESB provides almost €1m in funding to community-based, non-forprofit and voluntary organisations in the vicinity of its wind farms across the island of Ireland and the UK. This wind farm targeted emergency response fund is one of a number of initiatives being rolled out by ESB to support people and communities. It is currently working with Camara Education and Trinity Access to distributed refurbished laptops to students who urgently need them to continue to their studies. ESB has also added additional support to its Energy for Generation Fund to further support organisations and charities.

Road Safety warning ahead of Bank Holiday weekend Ahead of the June bank holiday weekend the Road Safety Authority and An Garda Síochána have renewed their appeal for road users to take extra care when using the roads. Provisional collision figures for 2020 show that there has been a 17% increase in the number of fatal crashes and a 9% increase in road deaths compared to last year.

Of great concern for both the RSA and Gardai is the doubling in pedestrian deaths this year - 18 pedestrians have been killed this year compared to 9 in 2019. “Motorists need to slow down and expect the unexpected while walkers and cyclists should be seen and use the road safely,” said Michael Rowland who is the Director of Road Safety, Driver Education and Research at the RSA.

More commonly associated with Christmas time the little ones will be captivated by this story of eccentric inventor Caractacus Potts who rescues an old car from the scrapheap.

OPINION Jobs will keep our young people at home Our new columnist James Knoblauch gives his local spin on national issues

“Nothing has been done and there has been a wholesale flight from the land and from the countryside… As far as I can see, Government ministers resident in Dublin consider Dublin as Ireland. They forget that we exist and that there are such places as Kerry”. When Kerry TD John Flynn made the above remarks in the Dáil in 1948, he could scarcely have imagined that the “flight from the land” he spoke of would continue for the next 70 years. In the 2016 census, it emerged that Kerry and Mayo had the oldest average ages of any counties in Ireland and when it came to large towns, Killarney had the oldest average age of any town in the country. The reality that many politicians have failed to recognise or act on is that young people are leaving Killarney and Kerry and not returning. Our town and county are facing a demographic time-bomb, with an ageing population leading the way of this worrying trend. There is no single reason to blame for this, but as a student, it seems to me that one of the town’s main problems is jobs. A 2018 Autumn report by Irishjobs.ie showed that Kerry had the third lowest jobs vacancy rate of any county. What this means is that relative to our working population, there are more jobs available in 23 other counties. If the jobs are not there, young people will not stay and if young people continue to leave, Killarney’s age profile will only grow older. This will have effects on the town. If Kerry follows the trend of Mayo, Donegal and Sligo, who all saw their populations fall at the last census,

then there could be worrying times ahead for Killarney and the county. The rural areas surrounding Killarney that have been hit by depopulation provide an insight into what could be Killarney’s future. Killarney is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful towns in the world, so it is a sad irony that so many of the people who grow up in this town find themselves leaving and not returning. Any Killarney student studying in Dublin will know the three-and-a-half-hour train journey up to Heuston Station provides a lot of time to get any last-minute assignments done or to reflect on the future. Studying in Dublin, I can’t help feeling that towns like Killarney are being left behind in an increasingly Dublin-centric Ireland. When I think of what I will do after I graduate, I wonder whether one day I too will be faced with the dilemma of leaving Killarney for good. As true as in 1948, there is a tendency of some politicians to forget that “there are such places as Kerry”, but places like Kerry and Killarney exist. Over a million tourists visit Killarney every year, so it is a sad state of affairs that people the world over travel to see our town, yet we fail to keep our own young. The current pandemic offers a perfect opportunity to start afresh. When we come out of this crisis – and we will – we will need less reliance on tourism industry jobs and more concentration on fulltime, non-seasonal work.

29.5.2020 Killarney Advertiser's Grigoriy Geniyevskiy was out and about this week chatting to locals and getting their reaction as life edges slowly back towards normality

CIARAN CRONIN AND SHONA GEURIN

I think we are going too fast. There are a lot of young people who aren’t following the rules and that’s not helping. There’s no green light yet in essence. Eventually well go back but it takes time. Just be logical about it and don’t jeopardise the ones you love.

Both of us are off from work, so that was one of the impacts of this whole situation. Ireland and Killarney are going at the right pace with rules and regulations compared to certain countries such as England. I guess now is the time to just be improving on yourself and focus on your own hobbies, and enjoy the sun while its there.

JOE COLLINS

JOHN KELLIHER

VINCENT LACKE

At times like these people need to talk to each other and lookout for their neighbours. I think the government is doing a good job with all the rules and regulations such as the 2m social distancing. I think It will be the same for another period of time.

We're going at around the right pace with lockdown. I don’t think it will ever go back to normal. There will be more people working from home. A lot of things will be changed from a point of view of work. Tourism has had a major impact as well, especially in Killarney. Killarney has been hit harder.

I’m originally from the States but around 20 years ago when I came to Ireland for the first time, I decided to stay here. The community here is great, and I would like to thank the community in Killarney. Were doing a great job with the current situation. Of course, I do miss the coffee shops, but we just have to follow the rules as were going at a steady pace. The gardai are doing a great job as well.

MICHAEL O’HALLORAN AND DOLLY O’HALLORAN

It is a difficult time and we're missing the family. Ireland is about right with the restrictions. They might loosen up another bit soon enough. We appreciate everyone who are following the rules. Were so blessed with what we have in Killarney. Can’t see it going back to normal in a long time. If people play by the rules it should be fine.

VIOLETA BENDIKIENE

It’s nice to be off and have a break but it does feel like we have been off for too long. I think smaller businesses should be opening now as well. Most people are getting sick of being in lockdown and more people are out in the parks and Killarney itself. Would be nice to see some of the smaller shops open soon.

Roller-coaster journey of change Can you imagine the conversation that might take place between a butterfly and a caterpillar that is about to build their chrysalis? How would you explain this overwhelming need to your non-caterpillar friends that you have to get so totally wrapped up in your need to change and transform? The birds are not going to understand. The bees are not going to get it. None of the other kinds of insects and animals go through this type of change. But you know that you just have to do it. There really is no other way to answer your soul’s calling. You have to completely transform. You have to let go of what is no longer serving you. You are not a climber of leaves and branches any longer. You have this overwhelming desire to fly. To soar. You can’t put a name to this yet, because you haven’t experienced it. But you can feel this constant calling to shift and change. You don’t understand it, yet at a deeper level you know that this is why you were born and you have to go for it. Arthur Burt says, “nothing happens until the pain of remaining the same outweighs the pain of change.” I believe

that the change doesn’t have to feel painful. I think that the emotion that we feel is fear. But if you really analyse this feeling that we get, isn’t it an awful lot like when you are riding in a roller coaster? You are nearing the top of the climb and about to go speeding down the other side, isn’t it that feeling? What if this feeling, this fear, is really anticipation? I know that I love this feeling of riding a roller coaster. The screaming, laughter, and excitement. Not everyone does. But a lot of us do. What if this is the feeling of fear of change, and we change our definition from fear to anticipation? If we can change the meaning of this kind of feeling then, when we enter the chrysalis, we are anticipating the feeling of spreading our wings. We are anticipating the feeling of the wind beneath our wings. If we are anticipating these feelings, then transformation is exciting. It is something to be desired. We enter into a wonderful relationship with it. Are you ready to transform? Are you ready to start a healthy relationship with yourself? Contact us today by visiting www.activate.ie

For example in hairdressers they can divide seats and in shoe stores customers feet can be measured by staff members while both their faces are protected by the screen.”

Green Party appoints Local Representative for Killarney The Green Party has selected Diarmaid Griffin to be its local area representative for the Killarney Electoral Area. A native of Fossa, he is a tour guide, environmental activist and vegetable grower. “I have worked as a tour guide for many years and I feel that there is potential to attract younger, more active and eco-conscious visitors to Killarney,” he says. “When we emerge from the Covid19 crisis, people will be seeking experiences closer to home. The domestic market will be very important. We have to protect our National Park and develop our walking trails, marine attractions and adventure tourism to reboot our tourism business.” Having recently worked on an organic vegetable farm in the Killarney area, Mr. Griffin is conscious of the value of local, fresh and chemical-free food. “If Covid19 has taught us anything, it’s the importance of local food production for our own community resilience. We can also build our reputation for locally produced food in Kerry to enhance our tourism business,” he says. Mr. Griffin was actively involved in campaigning for Kerry’s Green Party candidate Cleo Murphy in this year’s General Election. “The experience of knocking on doors and talking to people has convinced

me that Killarney needs a Green Party representative to highlight our issues,” he says. “The town made history when it elected the first Green Party public representative in Ireland, back in 1985 when Marcus Counihan won a seat on Killarney UDC. It’s time we become active again and I’m delighted the Kerry branch of the Green Party selected me for the role. “I’m inviting others in Killarney to join the party and help me campaign for environmental change at a political level.”

Thankfully there are many things to occupy those of us who have a bit of soil, be it on a windowsill, patio, or garden, we can be busy weeding, planting, digging – the list of job is endless! Many of us are taking up gardening for the first time, and embracing the challenge nature throws at us. However, let me be honest. I will really miss my holiday in France. Cold winter weeks spent remembering the heat of southern France, and wet windy days spent planning for the couple of warm weeks the following summer. Oh, I could feel sorry for myself, but that would be an awful waste of time! Better to bring what I love about France to my home. Lavender. There is nothing quite so French, or quite so evocative of a warm summer day, than the smell of lavender. Unfortunately, it is not the easiest of plants to grow, even though it remains one of the most popular purchases at this time of year, and garden centres offer a large range of varieties. There are broadly speaking four types of lavender: English, French, Spanish and Lavandin. All lavender hails from the Mediterranean region including English lavender, despite it’s name. Also, Spanish lavender is more-often than not confused with French lavender. So, to clarify, I will start with the least common variety, Lavandin, botanical name: Lavendula x intermedia. It is recognisable by its significantly long flower spikes, and tall growth habit – it can grow to three feet. It is difficult enough to find, but it is quite hardy. It is also highly scented, ideal for lavender sachets or pot pourri. Next in the popularity contest is French lavender, or Lavendula dentate. It also grows tall, though it is quite a dense plant. It has finely toothed leaves, a smallish flower-topped by purple bracts. Spanish lavender, or L. stoechas, is very popular, as it comes in many varieties. The leaves are usually silvery grey, most stay around the 18 inches, though there are dwarf varieties available now also. These plants are distinguished by their compact flower topped by large colourful bracts which look like rabbits’ ears, or small butterflies as a young friend once said.

Finally, my favourite, English lavender, or L. augustifolia. It is a compact plant, with silver foliage and usually deep purple flowers, though they are available in pinks and white too. They never have bracts on top of the flowers, and I think they have the most colourful flowers regardless. The reason they are called English lavenders is because they are the hardiest of all. They will withstand frost and rain, as well as flowering profusely in the relatively low light levels we have here in comparison to the Med. As always, when purchasing plants, it is well worth it to see where they come from, as this will give an indication as to how best to care for them. All lavenders need light, free-draining, gritty soil, as they hate having wet feet. They need sun, so south-facing areas are best. They hate heavy clay soils, and prefer slightly alkaline conditions – so, if your plants are struggling, a small amount of horticultural lime can help. On the other hand, they do not need a huge amount of nutrients. Lavenders benefit greatly from a severe haircut after flowering to stop them from going too woody. I hope to plant many lavenders this year, to bring some of France to my summer – however, I will be planting them in pots of light soil – compost, with added John Innes and a good shot of perlite – in order to make sure they will survive the year…. Just in case I need them again next year!

Virtual car run replaces annual road run and nets nearly €4k A virtual car run in memory of a popular Scoil Phobail Sliabh Luachra teacher raised nearly €4,000 for local cancer charities. Last Saturday marked the 10th anniversary of the passing of Anne Casey Joy who was originally from the Millstreet area, but was living near Beaufort and was a popular member of staff at the Rathmore school . Every year since her passing her brother Declan, who is also a teacher at the school, organises a classic car run in her memory and to raise money for local charities – in the last ten years Declan and his car friends have raised €50,000 for worthy causes. The annual run was due to get underway from the Brehon Hotel on Saturday morning but current health restrictions prevented the run taking place so Declan

organised a virtual run via the Anne Casey Joy Classic Car Run Facebook page. Entrants were invited to post a photo of their classic car taking part on anyone of the runs over the last nine years and were asked to make a donation to the Cork Kerry Health Link Bus while doing so. “This weekend was the tenth anniversary of her passing, I always run the event on the Saturday nearest the anniversary, and it just happened to be the day this year. She would have celebrated her 50th birthday too this year so it was supposed to a special run for all of us, it just did not happen that way,” Declan told the Killarney Advertiser. Donations reached €3,669.60 at the time of going to press but Declan has kept the fundraiser open. Go to www.everydayhero.com and searching for Anne Joy Casey Charity Run.

Nagle returns to World Rally Championship Paul Nagle and Craig Breen will get their second World Rally Championship outing of the season on Rally Finland but the actual date of the event remains up in the air. The Irish crew were contracted to compete on selected WRC rallies for the Hyundai Motorsport World Rally Team but the pandemic cast their plans in disarray. The last WRC event to run before the global shutdown was Rally Mexico in March. Promoters of the series are scrambling to save the series, seven rounds are needed to make it viable and Finland looks certain to be the rally that will relaunch the series. It is scheduled to run from August 6 to 9 but sources within the WRC also say that the event may be deferred to the weekend of September 6, the original date for Rally New Zealand. Such a move would give Finnish organisers a better chance to prepare for an ever-changing world and would find favour with the European-based teams as it would reduce travel and transport costs in an already curtailed series. Whatever happens, date wise, Breen and Nagle are certain to start the Finnish round, marking their second outing this year with the Germany-based Korean

team. They will join team regulars Thierry Neuville and Ott Tanak in a three-car attack on one of the most demanding and fastest rallies in the WRC. Nagle is a past winner of the event, alongside Kris Meeke in 2016 and remains one of two co-drivers from Ireland or Britain to win the rally in its 70-year history. This will mark Breen’s 11th start on the highly-specialised event, his best result coming in 2016 when as Meeke and Nagle’s teammate he took third overall. Finland last year was their first official outing for Hyundai at world level and their seventh overall set them up for further runs last year including Britain and Australia. The pair were always promised a limited 2020 programme with Hyundai but with the way the world changed since their last outing in February nothing was certain. “I can’t wait for Rally Finland alongside Craig with Hyundai, I have some great memories of some great roads there. I hope we get a test before the event but nothing is certain.” Last year they tackled Rally Estonia as a warm-up event and while the event is set for July 24 to 26, inter-country quarantine rules could prevent any Rally Finland hopeful of contesting this event.

Career Options that don’t count the points This week Leaving Cert and LCA students were asked to register on the Online Leaving Certificate Calculated Grades Portal so now it is a waiting game for all of you until results are issued, which is expected to be mid-August in line with previous years. Many of you are currently re-examining your course choices on your CAO application which must be finalised by July 1st at 5.15pm. Many more of you are looking at alternatives to CAO which will allow you to progress in your education, develop sector-specific and more general employability skills while also gaining invaluable work experience. A key factor with these options is that they are open to students from the Established Leaving Certificate and from LCA as well as young people from other educational settings and adults wishing to return to education and the good news is admission is not based on Leaving Cert points.

Higher Education. A broad variety of courses of progression exist in Colleges of Further Education locally here in Kerry including Killarney Community College and Kerry College of Further Education and also in Cork & Limerick. Typically the courses range from one to two years duration and combine classroom teaching, independent learning & project work, practical work and compulsory work experience. Lots of detailed information on the courses themselves, progression routes and the application process can be found on www.fetchcourses.ie , www.kerryfe.ie , www.killarneycc.ie Places are filling up in the more popular courses at this stage and as places tend to be filled on a first come, first served basis it is advisable to apply as soon as possible to guarantee your place. Some colleges do interview students so check that on the websites.

COURSES FOR PROGRESSION

Courses for Employment (also known as traineeships) combine learning in an education and training setting and in the workplace and provide you with the opportunity to develop cutting edge skills and on-the-job knowledge. Typically they last from 6 to 20 months in duration, have at least 30% of learning on-the-job and are supported by the Education and Training Boards (ETBs) and industry. Qualifications can be gained from Levels 4-6 on the National Framework of Qualifications. Over 75 courses from employment currently exist nationally in a range of industries including healthcare support, hair and beauty, fibre installation, overhead lines operative, heavy goods vehicle driving as well as many more. Applications for courses from employment are interviewed to as to check your suitability. While many courses for employment and apprenticeships are currently on pause the advice from the Admissions Office of Kerry College of Further Education is to apply on line at www.kerryfe.ie and they will be in touch once start dates for the new aca-

Also referred to as Post Leaving Cert Cources (PLCs) these courses offer a great way of continuing your education after second-level to gain QQI Level 5 and Level 6 qualifications which mean that you can go directly into employment or progress on Higher Education through the many progression routes offered into courses in universities and Institutes of Technology here in Ireland and abroad. For those of you who are unlucky enough not to get the points you need then opting for a course progression is great alternative to repeating. There is a strong tradition in recent years of students who for many reasons did not flourish in the Leaving Cert taking up a place in a College of Further Education and progressing onto complete Level 7/8 degrees and indeed postgraduate studies. On completion of the QQI level 5 or level 6 qualification you can apply to CAO and instead of using your Leaving Cert points you can use your FETAC/QQI points to progress into 1st year and in some cases 2nd year of your chosen course in

APPRENTICESHIPS

Prior to the current economic downturn as a result of Covid-19 there were huge shortages in the apprenticeship sector. The current restrictions have certainly impacted on the potential of students to gain the required backing of an employer to facilitate the Onthe-Job aspect of the training. However it is not as bleak as people may think. As various sectors such as the construction industry have returned to work more opportunities will begin to emerge for students looking for apprenticeships in the coming months. A search on recruitment site www. indeed.com this week showed 89 positions advertised for apprentices around the country. Keep an eye on www.apprenticshipjobs.ie also. For students who want to have a plan for September and who may not now be able to secure an employer it is well worth considering applying for a pre-apprenticeship course in a college of further education. For example St. John’s College in Cork city are currently offering such courses in Engineering, Motor Technology, Construction Technology and ICT Networking. Kerry college of FE are offering similar types of programmes in Building Construction and Carpentry and Joinery. It is important to remember that the range of apprenticships available now go far beyond areas like construction and mechanics and apprenticeship programmes ranging from Accounting Technician, ICT Cyber security, Insurance Practitioner, Commi Chef and many more are available locally and nationally. For further information contact the Apprenticeship Service Team at Kerry College (Monavalley Campus) on 066-7149600 or see www.apprenticeship.ie

and training in the areas of agriculture, horticulture, equine and forestry sectors. While some courses are offered through CAO in the Higher Education Institutions many more are offered as Level 5 and Level 6 Further Education Courses in agricultural colleges and other settings around the country. Further details on all of the courses on offer can be found on www.teagasc. ie/education/courses and applications can be made online. Teagasc will be holding a series of virtual events for prospective students and parents on the various courses from Wednesday the 3rd of June to the 17th. Each event will focus on an individual college and will feature live presentations on the courses on offer along with video footage of their facilities and farm enterprises. There will also be a virtual Q and A session and advice on how to complete the application process. So although a lot of uncertainty still exists in society in the short to medium term it is important to remember that the future is bright and by focusing on progressing in your education and training now, it will put you in a very strong place in relation to employment as the economy starts to improve. A Kerry County Councillor is calling on the Government to announce a halt to any reduction in teacher numbers in our Primary Schools for the next school year at the very least. Councillor Michael Cahill has said "Now is not the time to reduce teacher numbers. As a result of the Covid-19 Pandemic, class sizes will have to be reduced on re-opening, in order to adhere to Social Distancing, a difficult enough task without a reduction in teacher numbers” said Councillor Cahill. “This will make the task of supervising students who need to be Social Distanced in both the class and schoolyard, an even more difficult proposition,” “For instance, Aghatubrid National School, Caherciveen, a four-teacher school, under present guidelines and the number of students registered for the coming year, are set to lose one Teacher,” .............................................................

Council planning office reopens As part of Kerry County Council’s gradual resumption of services, the Council’s Planning Offices in Áras an Chontae re-opened on Monday. The opening of the Planning Offices to the public will be by appointment only, and customers are advised that full Planning services continue to be available by telephone, email and online. Members of staff are available to answer queries by telephone or email, while online services include viewing planning files and making submissions on planning applications. “The opening of the Planning Offices in Kerry County Council is the first step in the phased re-opening of Council offices,” Director of Planning Michael Scannell said. “Attendance at the Planning Office is by appointment only, and all visits will require compliance with social distancing guidelines and public health requirements.”

Aldi plants 15,000 native trees along the ‘Kerry Way’ As part of Aldi’s commitment to planting 100,000 native hardwood trees over the next five years, Aldi recently planted 15,000 trees on a site in Muingaphuca, near Carragh Lake. This is in addition to the 16,000 trees that were planted on a site in Rockfield, Limerick in December 2019. The initiative is the latest step in Aldi’s Carbon Reduction Pledge, which saw Aldi achieve Carbon Neutral status at the beginning of 2019. The new plantation of native Irish woodland will help to encourage local flora and fauna, while aligning with the Government’s aim to plant 22 million trees a year until 2040. The initial plantation of 16,000 trees will remove as much as 3,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. The Muingaphuca plantation will remove a further 2,700 tonnes of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. This means that Aldi’s first two plantations will sequester

a total of 5,750 tonnes of carbon emissions The next planting phase will take place within the next 12 months. Working in conjunction with Green Belt, the site underwent a Forest Carbon Woodlands Benefit Assessment. As part of this assessment, it was established that the site was planned sensitively to enhance the neighbouring aquatic feature close to the project boundary, to enhance the local landscape and to create a new and diverse habitat along the ‘Kerry Way’. Additionally, the site has been planned with significant setbacks throughout, enabling grassland to revert to more natural vegetation, further enhancing biodiversity in the area. The plantation will ultimately create a habitat for foxes, deer, badgers, squirrels, pine martens and many more. The unique nature of this woodland is the re-establishment of woodland cover in an area with a strong history of woodland removal.

Killarney charity raises over €17k The Green Wave, an initiative set up to support frontline staff during the COVID-19 outbreak, has exceeded its €500 fundraising target and raised €17,512.41. The Green Wave was set up by the team at Elite Event Management in Killarney to help show frontline staff an outpouring of gratitude and support from the public to bolster their resilience. The initiative saw nearly 9000 coffees delivered to hospitals and other frontlines locations across the country, in Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Louth, Kerry and Wexford. Staff in hospitals, care homes, fire sta-

tions and Garda Stations received these hot drinks over the past eight weeks while on shift during the crisis. The initiative aimed to help support local coffee shops too by enlisting them to make and deliver the coffees to the frontline. Kelly Crichton, Founder of the Green Wave said, “We set out nine weeks ago to recognise those working on the frontline, their hardwork and their sacrifice; and to show our gratitude and care for them. We did that together with more than 800 donors. I want to thank each and every person who donated for stepping up and showing these wonderful people that what they are doing is being recognised and we that we are all grate-

“There are so many wonderful charities out there who are struggling so it is our time to step back. We hope the spirit of this initiative will live on in the kind gestures we can continue to show to those who are working on the frontline.”

How constantly we think of you, With hearts and eyes that fill. The love in life we had for you, In death grows stronger still. Let the winds of love blow softly, And whisper for you to hear. We love and miss you sadly, As it dawns another year.

Those we love don’t go away, They walk beside us every day, Unseen unheard, but always near, Still loved, still missed, still very dear.

Forever loved and always remembered by your father Gerard and brothers TJ and Junior x Anniversary mass for both Dan and his mother, Mary on Saturday, 13th July at 6:00pm in The Church Of The Immaculate Conception, Listry.

O Jesus, you are mercy and goodness itself. Do not abandon me on account of my sins or punish me as I deserve, but graciously hear my humble prayer and grant me the favour that I now ask. Your Honour and the Glory of Your Holy Name. Amen. DN

Forever loved and sadly missed by Dad, Mom, Denise, Jill and Emir.

MIRACLE PRAYER Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked You for many favours. This time I ask you this very special one (mention favour). EFFICACIOUS NOVENA TO THE SACRED HEART OF JESUS I.O my Jesus, you have said, “Truly I say to you, ask and you shall receive, seek and you shall find, knock and it shall be opened to you,” Behold I knock, I seek and I ask for the grace of… Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be to the Father, Sacred Heart of Jesus, I put all my trust in Thee. II.O my Jesus, You said, “Truly I say to you, whatsoever you shall ask the Father in My name, He will give it to you.” Behold, in your name, I ask the Father for the grace of… Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be to the Father, Sacred Heart of Jesus, I put all my trust in Thee. III.—O my Jesus, You said, “Truly I say to you, Heaven and Earth shall pass away but My words shall not pass away.” Behold, I, encouraged by your infallible words, now ask for the grace of… Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be to the Father, Sacred Heart of Jesus, I put all my trust in Thee. O Sacred Heart of Jesus, to whom one thing alone is impossible, namely, not to have compassion on the afflicted, have pity on us miserable sinners and grant us the grace which we ask of Thee through the Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary, your and our tender Mother. Say the Hail, Holy Queen and add: St. Joseph, foster father of Jesus, pray for us. P.S.—This novena prayer was recited every day by St. Padre Pio for all those who recommended themselves to his prayers. EL.N.

Killarney Advertiser Sports Editor and former St Brendan’s captain Adam Moynihan selects a dream team of some of the best footballers to ever play for the Sem. For at least a hundred years now, St Brendan’s College has been the dominant force in Kerry and, indeed, Munster schools football, winning no fewer than 22 Corn Uí Mhuirí titles, four Hogan Cups and providing Kerry with countless top class footballers along the way. Whittling it down to the bare 15 is an impossible task - a huge number of fantastic players are mightily unfortunate not to be included – but through

discussions with some Sem stars from bygone eras and a thorough examination of the history books, a version of a St Brendan’s dream team was finally produced. Some players earned their places via their performances in St Brendan’s colours, others for their achievements thereafter. Some were boarders, others day boys. But they all have at least two things in common: they are all Sem boys and they are all supremely talent-

PAST PUPILS: Pat Spillane, Dick Fitzgerald, David Clifford, Johnny Culloty and Colm Cooper are just a few of St Brendan's most famous footballers.

ed footballers.

1. JOHNNY CULLOTY A highly skilled player who won his first All-Ireland for Kerry as a corner forward in 1954, Culloty didn’t make a name for himself as a goalkeeper until many years after he graduated from the Sem. The Legion legend kept goal for The Kingdom from 1959 to 1971, winning four more Celtic crosses in the process.

2. DENNY LYNE The fifth of the famous Lyne brothers of Cleeney, Denny was an unusually stylish full/corner back in an era of tough-tackling defenders. An All-Ire-

land winner with Kerry in 1946, he also won the County Championship with the Legion that same year before captaining The Kingdom in their momentous clash against Cavan in the Polo Grounds in New York in 1947.

3. JOHN O’KEEFFE

It took the Sem 23 years to win their first Hogan Cup and, somewhat ironically, it was a Tralee man who led them to the promised land. Athletic all-rounder John O’Keeffe from the Austin Stacks club was a boarder in St Brendan’s and he captained the school’s senior footballers to victory over St Mary’s of Galway in 1969. He went on to become a

SPORT

29.5.2020 mainstay of Kerry’s Golden Years team, claiming no fewer than seven All-Irelands and five All-Stars along with a Footballer of the Year award in 1975.

4. MIKE MCCARTHY

McCarthy is one player who didn’t really excel in Sem colours. In fact, when he was in sixth year, he didn’t make the school’s senior team. Kilcummin’s quiet man would subsequently blossom into one of the most reliable corner backs of his generation and he was a key factor in the All-Ireland wins of 2000, 2004, 2006 and 2009.

5. JACKIE LYNE

Younger brother of Denny, Jackie is perhaps the best-known sibling in Legion’s most famous footballing family. A versatile, barrel-chested ball player, he is regarded by many as the finest footballer of his generation and one of Kerry’s all-time greats. Jackie won a Kerry colleges title with the Sem before securing two All-Irelands with Kerry in 1946 and 1953.

6. SÉAMUS MOYNIHAN

Séamo was an influential figure for St Brendan’s as the school bridged a 23year gap to claim their second Hogan Cup in 1992. A couple of months later, the Glenflesk native was lining out at midfield for Kerry in the Munster Championship and a remarkable intercounty career was born. He won four All-Irelands and three All-Stars over the course of 15 years in the green and gold.

7. DONIE O’SULLIVAN

Much like Mike McCarthy in the corner behind him, Spa man Donie O’Sullivan was not a star in his school days but he came into his own at senior level. He played over 100 games in all competitions for Kerry, operating at corner back, half back and midfield over the course of an impressive 14-year intercounty career. The county’s first AllStar in 1971.

8. PÁIDÍ Ó SÉ

Ask most people about Páidí Ó Sé’s time in the Sem and they’re sure to bring up his expulsion but focusing on this alone is doing the great An Ghaeltacht clubman a great disservice. Páidí won three O’Sullivan Cups and two Corn Uí Mhuirí’s with St Brendan’s, starring at midfield as the Killarney school reached the All-Ireland final and semi-final in 1972 and 1973 respectively. An eight-time All-Ireland winner with Kerry and a fivetime All-Star.

9. PAUDIE LYNCH

Another member of the victorious 1969 team, Paudie Lynch from Beaufort was a superb player who became a trusted servant for Kerry during the Mick O’Dwyer era. Lynch could play multiple positions, lining out at midfield in the 1975 All-Ireland against Dublin before moving into the backs in his later years. An ever-present during The Kindgom’s historic four-in-a-row run from 1978 to 1981.

49

10. DARA MOYNIHAN

The 21-year-old from Spa still has his whole senior career ahead of him but he gets the nod in this team for the significant part he played in the school’s third and fourth Hogan Cup triumphs. Moynihan was instrumental against St Pat’s of Derry in the 2016 decider as he kicked four points from play and he repeated the trick as captain in 2017 when once again he led his team to glory in Croke Park, this time against St Peter’s of Wexford.

11. DICK FITZGERALD

This Crokes icon was the first superstar of the GAA. After studying in the Sem and later the Presentation Brothers College in Cork, Dickeen won five All-Irelands with Kerry, including the county’s first in 1903 and two as captain in 1913 and 1914. The Fitzgerald Stadium in Killarney is named in his honour.

12. PAT SPILLANE

Another offshoot of the Lyne dynasty, Pat Spillane boarded in St Brendan’s where he won a pair of Munster titles and also reached the Hogan Cup final alongside Páidí Ó Sé in 1972. The incredibly fit and remarkably skilful Templenoe man went on to forge one of the finest intercounty careers the GAA has ever seen, winning no fewer than eight All-Irelands and nine All-Stars, both of which stand as a records to this day.

13. COLM COOPER

It’s amazing to think that one of the greatest talents in the history of the game wasn’t necessarily a superstar in his school days, but that’s how it was for Dr Crokes legend Colm Cooper. A student at the Sem during the lean years and not always a guaranteed starter, Gooch more than made up for it over the course of a glittering career for club and county. One of the best to ever do it.

14. DAVID CLIFFORD

Despite having talented teams in the nineties and noughties, after ’92 the Sem somehow managed to go another 24 years without winning the coveted Hogan Cup. Then Cliffy came along. The Fossa prodigy lit up the schools scene in 2016 and he grabbed national attention for the very first time by scoring 2-5 in the final against St Pat’s. Now the captain of the Kerry senior footballers, the 21-year-old already has two AllStars to his name.

Páidí Ó Sé

Paudie Lynch

15. TADHGIE LYNE

Nicknamed the Prince of Forwards, Tadhgie Lyne (no relation to the Lynes of Cleeney) is remembered as one of the most stylish footballers to ever come out of Killarney. He helped the Sem to two Munster titles in 1946 and 1947 and although he never made the Kerry minors, the Crokes man went on to win three All-Irelands, a Footballer of the Year award and was Man of the Match in the 1953 final when he kicked six points from wing forward against Armagh.

MARY GEANEY

The Kerry sports star I admire most Killarney Advertiser columnist Eamonn Fitzgerald speaks to his sporting icon, football, camogie and hockey hero Mary Geaney We are spoiled for choice of sports stars in Kerry. Mick O’Connell, Dick Fitzgerald, Gooch and Mick O’Dwyer, as player and manager, all spring to mind. Then there is that famous quintet who won eight All-Irelands: Páidí, Ogie, Power, Mikey and Spillane. But when choosing the Kerry sports star whom I admire the most, I have to go for a lady, not because of her gender, but for her achievements across a variety of sports right up to international level. Mary Geaney is my choice. She mastered camogie, ladies football, hockey, badminton and golf. I spoke to the Castleisland superstar this week and I must say she was so modest about her successs. “Sport was always important in our house and there was a good sport ethic as I grew up,” Mary said. “We were packed into the car all year round and taken to matches here, there and everywhere so I had to be interested.” Her father, Con Geaney, was a member of the Kerry team that won the 1932 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship and her brother, Dr Dave, was on the Kerry team that won the All-Ireland in 1959. “When I started out with Castleisland it was all camogie, it was only when the camogie club folded there that we began to concentrate on ladies football.” In 1973 she played for Kerry against Cork in one of the first ladies Gaelic football games between the two counties. Kerry won by 5–10 to 4–11 with Mary scoring 2–6. In 1974 she played for Kerry when they lost to Tipperary in the first Munster Senior Ladies Football Championship final. In 1976 she captained Kerry when they won the All-Ireland, defeating Offaly by 4–6 to 1–5. She was also the top scorer in that final as her hat-trick – the first ever hat-trick in a ladies final – helped The Kingdom to clinch the Brendan Martin Cup. Mary registered 3-2 in total.

The finals were not played in Croke Park at that time because the top brass in the GAA did not have the high regard they now have for ladies football. Mary won the All-Ireland Ladies Club Football Championship with Castleisland Desmonds and also lined out for Munster.

CAMOGIE

The Kerry star also has the unique distinction of turning out for the old enemy, Cork, in camogie. “I had gone to boarding school in Ursuline in Cork so I knew a lot of the girls down there,” Mary explains. “I ended up playing with Éire Óg. Things progressed from there and I ended up playing and captaining Cork.” Between 1978 and 1988 she played for Cork in six All-Ireland Senior Camogie Championship finals, finishing on the winning side in 1978, 1980 and 1983. In six finals she scored 7–5. In the 1978 final she scored a hat-trick of goals and in 1980 she captained the winning Cork team. The final against Limerick went to a replay and she won a third medal in 1983. Geaney had the honour of leading both Cork and Kerry to championship glory in camogie and ladies football respectively, and she did it with two counties before Rena Buckley did so, which is another remarkable first by the talented Castleisland lady. As the first player to achieve such a feat she was presented with the Outstanding Contribution to Sport Award in 2019 (pictured).

HOCKEY

Mary played field hockey for Old Ursulines (Cork), Munster and Ireland. She made her senior international debut in 1971 against England and subsequently made 61 senior appearances for Ireland as a goalkeeper, even though she played in the forwards in football and in camogie. I asked her what makes a good goalkeeper.

AWARD: Deirdre Veldon (The Irish Times), 2019 Outstanding Achievement in Sport recipient Mary Geaney and Lynne Cantwell (Women in Sport Committee). Pic: Nick Bradshaw.

“You should know that yourself, Éamonn,” she says, winking. “You need to be confident and fully alert for the duration of the whole game”. Mary was a member of the Ireland teams that won the 1977 Triple Crown and the 1983 Women's Intercontinental Cup. In 2010 she was inducted into the Irish Hockey Association Hall of Fame. She also enjoyed provincial and national success as a badminton player. Mary played squash, badminton and golf for Munster. In golf, she managed a young Killarney team to the Irish Ladies Senior Cup with a 4-1 win over Royal Portrush. It was Killarney’s first national title in the grade. How did she avoid injuries despite playing for so long in so many different sports? “I did good, solid training and looked after myself,” Mary says. “Then, of course, I was very lucky as well.”

COVID-19

These are challenging times for sportspeople in all codes and Mary feels as though the current crisis has highlighted just how important our games are to us. “[This pandemic] is teaching us the

value of sport in peoples’ lives, not just the players but the supporters and the mothers and fathers and the juveniles and, of course, all the craic you have. “It is very hard for players now who miss the social as well as the competitive elements of sport. In my own career, the achievements were nice, but most of all I value the great friends I made, friends I still have today after all those years.” The multi-sport legend is managing to keep busy during the lockdown. “Plenty of weeding and plenty of gardening, and I’m keeping in contact with so many friends I made through sport and that I cherish.” “Leo says you can go back to your golf in Killarney as of last Monday,” I remind her. Mary was down to a handicap of 3 at one stage when she played with Munster. The handicap has gone out somewhat now, but she is so skilled and competitive that I wouldn’t like to be playing her in match play. To get to the pinnacle of their sport, even the most naturally gifted athletes have to give it their all. Mary Geaney did. For that, and for her achievements at the top levels in a variety of sports, she is the Kerry sports star I admire most.

What did Michael Jordan do after The Last Dance? He did what any wealthy American retiree would do. He came to Killarney to play golf and drink Guinness. To find out what the GOAT is really like, Adam Moynihan spoke to the locals who showed him around Kerry and Ireland in 1999. If, like me, you’ve been gripped by the ‘The Last Dance’, you’re probably wondering what comes next. Now that the fascinating documentary is all over, how do we fill the void? Well, Michael Jordan was probably wondering the same thing himself after the real Last Dance back in 1998. With his sixth NBA championship secured and the break-up of the Bulls imminent, the game of basketball was about to lose its biggest star for the second (but not the last) time. A salary dispute between players and owners, which pushed the beginning of the 1998-99 season out to the New Year, delayed the announcement, but Jordan officially retired on January 13, 1999. Just a few short months later, perhaps to get away from the States during the NBA Playoffs (which, for the first time since 1984, did not feature the Chicago Bulls), Michael and a dozen of his friends landed in Ireland for 10 days of non-stop golf. Why did he choose our little island? The same reason many American basketballers have arrived on our shores down through the years. The late, great Paudie O’Connor.

GOLF TRIP

Arguably the greatest Irish basketballer of all time and one of Killarney’s most famous sons, Paudie revolutionised the game in this country when he was responsible for bringing the first American professionals to our league in 1979. He subsequently moved to Las Vegas where he set up O’Connor Golf Tourism and when a mutual friend introduced him to Jordan, Paudie, ever the big thinker, jumped at the prospect of bringing one more baller back to his hometown. He suggested that Jordan, an avid golfer, should join him on a trip to Ireland and Scotland. The biggest athlete on the planet accepted his invitation and on May 18, he and an entourage, which included his manager George Koehler and fellow athletes from the NBA, NFL and MLB, arrived in Shannon Airport on a private jet

adorned with a large Nike swoosh. There to greet him on the runway was Killarney man Dennis Carroll, a Kerry Coaches bus driver who would ferry Jordan and co. around the country for the following week and a half. Dennis remembers the trip well and speaking to the Killarney Advertiser this week he said that contrary to his portrayal as a disagreeable character in the documentary, he found Jordan to be “perfectly fine”. “You wouldn’t think that he was the superstar he was,” Dennis says. “He’d salute and he’d engage… He was respectful, courteous and he took care of me. As a group, Jordan and his friends were good fun. They were just like ordinary guys.” Paudie’s brother Séamie, who caddied for Jordan when he was in Kerry, admits that the six-time NBA Finals MVP “got a bit cranky at certain things”, but overall they got along “famously” during their time together. “To me, he was a very fine gentleman,”

Séamie recalls. “I couldn’t say a bad word against him.”

FANS

Understandably, Jordan’s arrival caused quite a furore. Fans of all ages flocked to the golf courses to catch a glimpse or to get an autograph, and for the most part MJ was accommodating. “The day he played Killarney it was like the Irish Open,” Dennis says. “Young fellas were skipping school left, right and centre. I think there were a few teachers there as well if I’m not mistaken! When they played Ballybunion one of the teachers from a nearby school was a golfer and he got wind of it. He brought his whole class down to see Michael Jordan. “Everywhere they went there were lots of people. It was kind of being kept quiet but word got out fairly quickly. He didn’t shun the people but he wasn’t going around pressing the flesh and signing autographs. He was here on a private visit and he was given his space. The Irish be-

ing the Irish, they were respectful. They weren’t on top of him at all.” Jordan never asked Séamie to keep fans at arms-length either. “He didn’t refuse anyone anything and he didn’t tell me to stop anyone coming up to him, but I used to wait for the right moment and give the young lads a wink to say, ‘now is the time’. “Certainly in Killarney there were a lot of young lads around the place looking for autographs and he did a bit of it in fairness, but he was on holiday. It wasn’t long after The Last Dance in 1998 so he had been under a lot of pressure.” The group, which also included baseball player Vince Coleman and NFL wide receiver Roy Green, stayed in the Aghadoe Heights for three nights and they also got to sample Killarney’s nightlife when they were in town. “They went into The Crypt nightclub three nights on the trot,” Séamie says, “and they had great fun. This was a strange country to them but they were very struck by the courtesy of the people and the food and the drink, and life in general. “Jordan loved the pint of Guinness and the Irish coffee and he used to consume them both at the one time. They’d be on the golf cart when was playing and the Irish coffee would be cold and the Guinness would be flat, and he’d drink them away.”

36 HOLES A DAY

The travelling party played an incredible amount of golf during their stay. In fact, their driver reckons they took on 12 courses (some of them twice) in just 10 days. “Michael was a fanatical golfer – I don’t know how good he was – but 36 holes a day was no problem to him. “They played Lahinch, Waterville, Tralee, Ballybunion, Killarney, Ring of Kerry, Old Head, Fota, The European Club, Portmarnock twice, Royal County Down twice and the two courses in Portrush. They didn’t do 36 every day but a lot of days they did.” And, as was highlighted in the docu-

SPORT

29.5.2020

mentary, it wasn’t just the love of the game that was motivating Jordan on the course. “They were playing for quite large sums of money,” Séamie says. “I helped him to get up and down on the 18th in Killarney for a four and he gave me a slap across the arse. ‘Great call, Séamie’. I had saved him some money. He was quite entertaining.” Dennis also recalls some significant wagers being made on the bus. “He was fond of the gambling. Between golf courses, they were playing cards. They were pretty heavy gamblers, most of them. They weren’t afraid of it.” One day, however, a game of cards was interrupted when Jordan and his friends became very much afraid. It seems as though His Airness, ironically enough, has a fear of heights. “We were going from the Ring of Kerry golf course to Waterville, so we were doing the Ring of Kerry arseways for the want of a better word,” Séamie says. “Going up towards Coomakista there’s quite a large, steep drop – it’s probably 200 feet – on the left-handside into the ocean. Michael and the boys were playing cards in the back of the bus when we went around a turn. Next thing we looked around and they were all hiding under the table! “I asked Jordan about it after and he said he had never seen anything like it.

They were scared.” Dennis, nicknamed The Steerologist by Paudie and Séamie for his abilities behind the wheel, laughs as he retells the story. “Yeah, they were scared. The small roads and all that. I wasn’t hanging about because I was trying to make the tee time. Michael was afraid of heights, strangely enough for a very tall man.” When they were finished in Ireland, Jordan and his friends moved on to Scotland for some more golf before flying back to America. In the weeks and months thereafter, the people of Killarney could have been forgiven for thinking that it was all a dream. Did the biggest sports star of all time really just potter about our quaint little town, play a round in Killeen and drink pints of Guinness in The Crypt? “It was an amazing experience, Séamie says. “It was great for the town and great for the golf club. “Jordan enjoyed this part of the world too. He never realised it would be so quiet with parts of it uninhabited and the green grass and the cattle and the sheep. He couldn’t understand how these golf courses were built and how they were so good. He got a great reception in Killarney and he loved it.” And, of course, the mastermind behind it all was Paudie O’Connor. Sure, who else could pull it off?

It was kind of being kept quiet but word got out fairly quickly. The day he played Killarney it was like the Irish Open. Dennis Carroll - Jordan's driver
