Gardai continue to investigate death | By Sean Moriarty
St Finan’s site to be sold to private developers Some of the buildings and lands surrounding the landmark St Finan’s site in Killarney are to be offered up for sale, the Cork Kerry Regional Health Forum revealed this week. | By Sean Moriarty Earlier this year the Health and Safety Executive lodged a planning permission application with Kerry County Council as part of a long-term plan to get the much needed new community hospital off the ground. A further 5.7 acres of the site will be acquired by Kerry County Council for social housing. All other buildings and lands will now be offered for sale to private developers after the HSE failed to find additional interest within the public sector. At last week’s Cork Kerry Regional
Health Forum meeting in Cork City Mayor of Killarney Cllr Michael Gleeson asked the forum to confirm if it had determined any positive and productive uses for the attached lands that were surplus to requirements for the proposed new Community Hospital. Ger Reaney, Chief Officer of Cork Kerry Community Health Care confirmed at the meeting that the HSE would retain part of the main campus for construction of the hospital and aside from the social housing plan there was no further interest in the land. “There has been no further interest in the former St Finan’s building and the
surrounding land to date, and so it is the HSE’s intention to dispose of the remainder of this property, via public sale, in the near future,” said Mr Reaney. Cllr Gleeson expressed disappointment at the revelation. The previous town council and the current Municipal District Council have campaigned since the hospital’s closure in 2012 for the land to be kept in the public domain. Suggestions included homes for the elderly or a remote campus for one of the local universities or third level colleges for the purpose of hotel and catering education. “I ask the HSE to again consider these suggestions before proceeding,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. Keith Barry visits The Chatroom Keith Barry - the world’s leading TV hypnotist, mentalist and brain hacker - paid a visit to The Chatroom to tell editor Michelle Crean all about his upcoming INEC show 'INSANITY' – and hacked her brain! Keith arrived at lunchtime yesterday (Thursday) telling us it was great to be back in Killarney – ahead of his upcoming show 'INSANITY' in the INEC Killarney on January 18, at 8pm. “I love Killarney, I’m here quite a lot even when I’m not working,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “I’m back in Killarney with my new show
‘INSANITY’, it’s designed to be my most craziest and most insane show to date. I’m excited and tickets are flying out the door.” On camera Keith dazzled Michelle with some card tricks stunning her with his exact answers before asking her to think of anything random that she’s never drawn before – not specifically stating what the subject should be - and correctly guessed the answer once again. “I picked a camel for some strange reason,” Michelle said. “I thought it would be a weird shape for him to try to figure out and that maybe I
could catch him out – but surprisingly he guessed correctly. I just have no idea how he did it!” Check out The Chatroom over the coming days on our Facebook page: Killarney Advertiser to see Keith in action.
The death of local man Thomas Carton in Killarney last week is the latest in a series of tragedies to hit the family in recent years. Mr Carton’s body was discovered by Gardai in a house on Torc Terrance last Wednesday night (November 20). Mr Carton’s father Eugene passed away in July, his brother Eoghan died in tragic circumstances in 2007, his niece Emly died at a young age in July 2017, while he was also predeceased by his partner Caroline five years ago. Gardaí in Killarney are continuing to investigate the cause of his death, but have ruled out foul play “for the moment”. “We are particularly anxious to hear from people who may have seen or spoken to Thomas in recent days or who may have any information whatsoever in relation to his death,” Superintendent Flor Murphy told the Killarney Advertiser. “At the moment there is nothing to suggest foul play but we need to examine the full facts.” Mr Carton’s funeral took place on Monday in St Mary's Cathedral and he was laid to rest afterwards in Aghadoe Cemetery. He is survived by his mother Mai, his sisters Katherine and Aine, and his twin brother Jimmy. Anyone who has any information about this incident is asked to contact Killarney Garda Station on 064 667 1160, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800-666-111 or any Garda Station.

No commitment for dementia unit
The Regional Health Forum has stopped short on giving a commitment to a dedicated Alzheimer Day Unit for the Killarney Area. | By Sean Moriarty

Mayor of Killarney Cllr Michael Gleeson raised the issue at last week’s forum in Cork City Hall. Cllr Gleeson asked the forum, following a 2017 survey of services, if the forum accepted there was need for a dedicated unit in the immediate Killarney area. “[It would] augment the already wonderful unit at Rockmount, Kilgarvan,” he said. However, Ger Reaney, Chief Officer of Cork Kerry Community Healthcare, did not offer any commitment in his response to Cllr Gleeson’s question. He said that the results of the 2017 sur-
vey were part of a broader review of day services and that this review was nearing completion. “It will look at both generic day services and Dementia Specific Services,” said Reaney. “The review will inform how Day Services will be provided within Cork Kerry Community Health Care going forward ensuring that resources are used efficiently, directed at those most in need and identifying any gaps in the service that may exist. However, it must be noted that the provision of any new Day Care Centres will be the subject of the availability of the additional funding being made available to Cork Kerry Community Healthcare.”
Fundraiser Rare spiders found in memory of in National Park Killarney teen | By Sean Moriarty
| By Michelle Crean Four Killarney schools have plans to join forces next week for a fundraiser in memory the much loved Killarney teen Niall McGillicuddy, who passed away last year. Niall, of Cloonteens, Kilcummin, passed away last October after a short illness. The entire Killarney community was deeply affected by Niall's passing and his closest friends Ryan O’Grady, Ruairí Doyle, Eoghan O’Sullivan, Evan Looney, Neil O’Shea, Emmett O’Shea, Mike Lenihan and Padraic Looney have decided to organise a fundraiser for Ward 2D, where Niall spent much of his time while in Cork University Hospital. Next Thursday, December 5, St Brendan's College, Killarney Community College, Presentation Monastery, and Holy Cross Mercy will participate in a Christmas Jumper day ‘A Gift for Niall’ with the total amount raised going towards the renovation of this ward. This is the first time that these schools have engaged in a fundraiser of this manner - testament to Niall and the impact of his passing on Killarney town. Niall's friends, Ryan O’Grady and Eoghan O’Sullivan, two of the boys behind the event, explained that they are very
grateful to the four schools and their willingness to participate in this event. “It’s acknowledgement of Niall and the McGillicuddys and how highly thought of they are in the community and also of the incredible work of the staff of ward 2D in the CUH,” Ryan said. “This day means so much to us and we really appreciate the efforts of everybody involved. Events like this will ensure that Niall will never be forgotten,” Eoghan added. Teacher Elaine Moynihan said that Niall's passing had a massive impact on the entire Killarney community. “The objective of this day is, not only to celebrate this fantastic young man, but also to raise as much money as possible for this worthy ward. Niall's friends would therefore like to invite anyone within the wider community who would like to make a donation to do so. All donations, big or small, will be gratefully accepted and can be dropped into St Brendan's College over the next week.” Niall's closest friends will travel to Cork in the New Year to present a cheque for the total amount raised to the ward when a picture and plaque, acknowledging Niall and his memory, will be erected in his honour.
A spider expert has found three of Ireland’s rarest breeds of spiders in Killarney National Park. Irish arachnologist (spider expert) Myles Nolan, who recently conducted a survey - revealed over 50 spider species living in the Park – and three rare species of spider were abundant. However, he has confirmed to the Killarney Advertiser that none of the spiders, the Green Huntsman, the Eurasian Green Crab Spider and the Triangle Spider, are harmful and there’s no reason for anyone to fear them. The Green Huntsman is restricted to the south-west of Ireland and prefers a combination of old woodland, preferably oak, and good quality wet grassland. It can be found in abundance locally in the oak woodlands of Cahnicaun and Glaisín na Marbh. The Eurasian Green Crab Spider can be found on the foliage of both oak and yew trees near Derrycunnihy on the Moll’s Gap road and elsewhere. A third species, the Triangle Spider, was found on many yew trees near Reenadinna in the Park and there are other sightings of this spider in County Cork. “I carried out the survey from late August through to October,” Mr Nolan
told the Killarney Advertiser. “This involved collecting specimens by a number of methods including turning stones and dead wood, sifting through mosses, knocking specimens down from overhanging foliage of trees, heather and gorse, and using a sweep net to collect from grassy areas. Killarney National Park is the only place in Ireland where these spiders occur in abundance. I worked closely with the Conservation Rangers in the Park getting access to locations and they assisted with some collecting. Their knowledge was hugely helpful.”

Former park ranger plans photography exhibition With thousands of photos showing Killarney National Park’s natural beauty – it was hard to whittle it down to 27 for a unique exhibition taking place tomorrow evening (Saturday). | By Michelle Crean Former Conservation Ranger Peter O'Toole, who recently retired after 40 years, will hold his first ever photo exhibition 'Killarney National Park - A Ranger's View' in Killarney House and Gardens. Over the years Peter has explored and photographed every inch of the Park and now brings his stunning large printed images to life for the public to view. From his dearly beloved dog Oscar, who accompanied him on all his photographic outings, to Muckross House in the snow and during sunset, Innisfallen, Ross Castle and Ross Island, Yew Woodland on Muckross Peninsula, the upper and lower lakes, O’Sullivan’s Cascade, Cloughfane, Dundag Boathouse and Torc Mountain, Peter has captured it all in beautiful detail.
And although the exhibition, hosted by the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, opens at 7pm by Minister Brendan Griffin, it will remain on display for some time to come. “Initially I put forward a large number of images and it was painstaking picking 20 so we boiled it down to 27,” Peter told the Killarney Advertiser. “I’ve covered every inch of the Park. Since I took up photography I never took any photos outside of the Park and I don’t intend to either.” He added that he could photograph different parts of the Park over and over again and each time it would look different. “I mostly go on my own, it’s that sense of tranquillity and you don’t know what’s going to come. I’m looking forward to the next 20 years of clicking the camera. It’s like a new adventure every time.”
Three students from St Brendan’s College, Fifth Year student Giordano Diro, Transition Year student Jack Greaney and Second Year student Dáire O’Brien, reached the semi-final of the annual ‘Poetry Aloud’ competition held in the National Library in Kildare Street in Dublin on Friday last. The poetry speaking competition is aimed at post-primary schools, organised by Poetry Ireland and the National Library of Ireland in partnership with University College Cork. The boys went up against students from schools all over Ireland and had to recite two poems each in their age categories. However, just one, Dáire, made it to the final which takes place next Friday December 6. He is now hoping to win the Junior category which includes a €300 prize and book tokens to the value of €300 for the winner’s school library. “They had to do two poems, one set poem and one chosen and had to bring out the meaning of it,” teacher Mary Denise Lyons, told the Killarney Advertiser. “Up to 2,000 students entered the competition and just over 100 made it to the semi-final, with 30 in the final in the different age categories.” An overall winner will be chosen from the three category winners and will

receive a further €200, the Seamus Heaney perpetual trophy and a signed book of poetry. The runner up in each category will receive a book token and certificates of participation will be presented to all finalists. “We’re very proud of the boys,” Principal Sean Coffey added.
Free town parking for Christmas Shoppers visiting Killarney town centre in the run up to Christmas will have a number of free car parking options available to them. Car parks on Rock Road, Lewis Road and High Street will be free to use every day
during the month of December. The upper New Street car park and the Glebe car park will be free to use up until 11am each day while the Fair Hill and the lower section of the New Street car park will be free to use until 1pm every day.

Road safety campaign wins national award Road safety was their priority and a huge project undertaken by Killarney students meant they secured a national prize last week. | By Michelle Crean John Breen and Rogan O’Shea, now former students with Killarney Community College, travelled with teacher John Keane to the Irish Road Victim’s Association (IRVA) Global Light of Hope Awards in recognition of their road safety efforts and support of their charity. The event took place in the Bloomfield Hotel Mullingar as part of the IRVA annual event to mark the UN World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims on November 17. Garda Peter McCarthy of the Kerry Garda Traffic Corps was also honoured for promoting the AXA RSA Road Show among students in the county which takes place annually in the INEC Killarney. With the support of coordinator Marcia Keane and teacher John Keane the students themselves took on the responsibility and put a lot of work into the organisation of events throughout the
year to promote road safety among students and teachers in the school. “These activities included a car crash simulator, a Garda road safety presentation, poster competitions, a quiz, a fire brigade demonstration, a school survey on attitudes to road safety and a street collection that raised €1,400 for the IRVA to name a few,” teacher John Keane told the Killarney Advertiser. Donna Price, Founder and Chairperson for the Irish Road Victims' Association, commended the students for their very effective promotion adding that they were an example for students the length and breadth of the country, he added. “This is the first occasion that students have been recognised for their efforts by being awarded the Global Light of Hope Award by the IRVA. This was an unexpected surprise yet a much appreciated honour for the students and the school and a lovely acknowledgement for their great work.”

Transition Year students from St Brigid’s Secondary School, Killarney have come up with a fundraising and awareness campaign, working alongside St Vincent De Paul to make a small difference to the homeless women and children of Kerry. As part of their education the girls learned that of as of September 2019, there were 10,397 people homeless across Ireland, affecting both adults and children. And when they heard that the number of homeless families has increased by 354 percent since September 2014 – they set about their project and are planning a sponsored ‘SleepOut’ on January 17 to raise money.
With the help of the public the students are also collecting ‘Dignity Packs’ to give to those who really need them over Christmas. “A dignity box is a pack filled with essential hygiene items which we take for granted every day,” Religion teacher, Stephanie Horan, said. “Items being collected are: sanitary pads, hairbrushes, hair ties, hats, plasters, wipes, deodorant, lip balm, toothbrush, face cloths, fluffy socks - this list is suggestive but not endless. If anyone would like to donate, we would be very grateful for any donations you can give. You can contact a member of staff on shoran@sbk.ie or feel free to drop them to the school office on New Street, Killarney.”

Public meeting on Kerry transport issues Transport issues are falling far short of what is needed for the people of Kerry a public meeting will hear this Monday night in Killarney. Fianna Fáil General Election candidate Cllr Norma Moriarty is hosting the meeting in Scott’s Hotel at 8pm. “A lot of concern has been expressed about the merging of Kerry with Cork in terms of organisational and administrative operations,” said Cllr Moriarty. “Many people feel as if Kerry has become the poor relation and is not getting the
same service as before. Given Kerry’s popularity in terms of tourism and visitor numbers, combined with the vast geographical area of the county, the current transport options fall far short of what is needed.” She says she believes the current bus fleet should be upgraded, as well as creating more capacity at peak times of the year. “I am hoping that this meeting will give people the opportunity to have their say on the transport problems that they face so that we can begin looking at ways to address these issues.”

Has it backfired for Sale of young Jackie Healy-Rae? St Finan’s
News that St Finan's is to be sold on the public market is not that good. I can't see anyone queuing up to buy it. And even if they do, where will it all end?
It appears Black Friday is upon us in more ways than one as this week the news emerged we are to get a councillor, with a conviction, sitting on what is this county’s foremost policing body - two for the price of one in other words! The Joint Policing Committee (JPC), which includes the most senior Gardai in the division is all about law enforcement, including statistics on drink driving, drug taking, robberies and late night violence for the county. I have long thought we have noone from “the other side” of the law to balance people giving out about crime and criminals and problems with detection. JPCs are “not to be talking shops”, the last meeting in Tralee in November was explicitly told. “Consideration of issues should be data and research based – it should not be emotion based,” the guidelines state. Cllr Jackie Healy-Rae (24), himself at his very first meeting as a member of the JPC held the Gardai to account on drug dealing, garda activity and several other suitable matters. Cllr Healy-Rae also held forth on law enforcement and leniency and the need for Gardai to be more visible “on the ground” around Kerry villages, especially during daylight robbery at Mass times. He was elected by his fellow councillors onto the committee at the AGM
It does not look good for the county’s JPC to have a vocal member with a new conviction of the Council on the first Friday in June, his very first meeting. This was the very day a date for the late night assault case for himself and two co-accused was being set below in Kenmare Court. He got permission to be absent from the court to attend to the Council business. Even before it first came to court in April, there had been extraordinary
I am thinking of Colaiste Iosagain in Ballyvourney. It has lain idle for more years than I can remember. What we need with St Finan's is a public buyer. Perhaps some of the €13 billion Apple tax money this Government is fighting so hard not to get could be set aside?
Jackie Healy-Rae
publicity. The question is, why did young Jackie Healy-Rae, who was contesting a serious charge, and which was before the court on that very day, turn up on the policing committee? Now it seems to have backfired not only for young Jackie but most importantly for the JPC itself, and indeed for the Council, because let’s face it, it does not look good for the county’s JPC to have a vocal member with a new conviction, especially given that the court case itself heard much criticism of the Gardai. There are voices now among his colleagues - voices who will not come out of hiding - who are talking about how inappropriate the whole thing
is and how maybe there should be a vote of no confidence in him. Solicitor, Padraig O’Connell, said his client would not be resigning from the Council or any committee as he had attained those positions “in the court of public opinion”. The Chairman of the Kerry JPC, who is also Mayor of Kerry, Fianna Fail Councillor Niall Kelleher, said he did not wish to comment on the appropriateness of a councillor with a conviction for assault causing harm being allowed to continue to sit on the JPC. The next meeting of the policing body is in January and the case was not yet finalised, Cllr Kelleher said. But perhaps if Cllr Jackie holds his ground and remains on the committee, we will all get a bit more insight into how the law operates - from the other side as it were.
Politicians have lost their courage Exactly how out of touch and incompetent this Government and its senior civil servants are is highlighted, even underlined, by ‘Print Gate. Close to €1.8 million will have been spent on a new €808,000 Dáil printer ordered for Kildare House in May 2018 which has never been used. It was too big to be installed when it arrived in September and structural works required cost €236,000 to fix it. Then we have the angry farmers block-
ing the capital, because nothing has been learnt from the beef tribunal and the barons and the major supermarkets remain in charge. People can’t buy homes because companies are snapping up all the new houses, there is no social housing, the roads are so crowded the people can’t get through the M50 not to mind towns like Macroom with a 20 minute delay. The water is undrinkable in Sligo. There is the rise of the right and the fall of the left - or so we are told. Discussed at a recent budget meeting
was rising Kerry homelessness figures and Milltown, one of Ireland’s fastest growing and youngest towns, is losing its GP.
SYSTEM IS FAILING It was our own Cllr Niall O’Callaghan who put his finger on it: “The system has failed us. Somebody needs to pull the system down and start from scratch,” Cllr Niall said. He is so right. There is a chance in the coming days for a vote of no confidence in that most incompetent minis-
ter, Housing Minister Eoghan Murphy, and we’ll get a Christmas election. But the problem is politics has failed too. Most politicians are without courage. Fianna Fail have become so used to being a footstool for the Dublin Blue Shirts, they are next to useless. They have lost all their courage. They will simply sit dumb and abstain and pretend it is for the good of the country and part of their confidence and supply agreement! What a cop out - when the real reason FF will stay dumb as any stone is they won’t want to walk off the Christmas turkey so early!

CHOIR: The Kingdom Gospel Choir, The Kingdom Youth Choir and The Kiddie’s Kingdom Gospel Choir will hold a fundraising concert this Sunday in the Friary Church. Photo: Michelle Crean
Gospel choir’s charity concert this Sunday It will be music to the ears of the public this Sunday as members of the Kingdom Gospel Choir hold a charity concert at the Friary Church on Sunday. | By Sean Moriarty Founded in 2018 by Killarney woman Caoimhe Lynch, the choir was set up to promote gospel-style singing in Killarney and to have a purpose like raising
much needed funds for local charities. This year’s chosen charity is the South Kerry branch of Multiple Sclerosis following on from last year’s concert that raised funds for the Kerry Cork Cancer Link Bus.
The choir is made up of three branches, the adult Kingdom Gospel Choir, The Kingdom Youth Choir and The Kiddie’s Kingdom Gospel Choir. Each branch of the choir will perform individually on Sunday before they all come together for the grand finale. Founder Caoimhe Lynch is currently studying in Dublin but her mother Siobhan helps look after the day-to-day run-
ning of the choir in her absence. “Caoimhe saw a gospel choir in Galway and saw something like this was lacking in Kerry,” Siobhan told the Killarney Advertiser. “We have been practicing once a week for the last 10 weeks, it’s special as it caters for all age groups, we have members aged five to 90.” Sunday’s concert gets underway at 3pm and admission is by donation only.
Killorglin student wins national science award A sixth-year student from Killorglin Community College was named the overall winner of SciFest 2019, for his research and development of a biofilter to combat oceanic and freshwater dead zones. Timothy McGrath will now go on to represent Ireland at the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in Anaheim, California next May. Through research Timothy realised that eutrophication, an enrichment of water by nutrient salts, which causes structural changes to the ecosystem, turns huge areas of the ocean into dead zones and affects many countries as a result. Dead zones are low-oxygen areas in the world's oceans and large lakes,
caused by excessive nutrient pollution from human activities. Timothy created a technically viable solution and built a structure that stored a halophyte ecosystem that would reduce nutrient pollution, decreasing algae blooms and deoxygenation of ocean water and freshwater. Timothy secured his place at the national final after his victory at the SciFest regional final in the IT Tralee. The national final was held in the Marino Conference Centre in Dublin last Friday, and attended by Richard Bruton TD, Minister for Communication, Climate Action and Environment. Timothy was presented with the SciFest 2019 SFI Intel ISEF Award by Margie McCarthy, Head of Education

With Christmas just weeks away GardaĂ are behind a new campaign to stamp out illegal moneylenders – who cause intimidation, threatening behaviour and harassment. | By Michelle Crean This week, multi-agencies including Kerry MABS, Kerry and West Limerick Credit Unions, Society of Saint Vincent de Paul and the GardaĂ came together to launch the ‘Say No to Illegal Moneylenders where the lending has no ending’ campaign – to warn people of the danger they face. "The lead up to Christmas can be a challenging time for a lot of vulnerable people who may be caught up in a cycle of moneylenders,â€? John O’Regan, PRO, Chapter 23 Kerry and West Limerick Credit Unions said. “Loan rates can be very high and people can be caught in a vicious cycle of repeat borrowers without ever getting out of debt. Although we are all independent organisations, we have come together to advise people to avoid borrowing from illegal moneylenders in the lead up to Christmas.â€? Don’t let your menopausal symptoms manage you - opt for a healthy nutritious diet to balance your hormones.
Natural ways to deal with menopause
Menopause is a normal condition that women experience as they age. The term menopause can describe any of the changes a woman goes through, either just before or after she stops menstruating, marking the end of her reproductive period. During this time it is important to focus on your diet and ensure you are including plenty of green leafy vegetables, nuts and seeds. These contain lots of minerals such as calcium and magnesium for bone health. Also include plenty of orange, red and purple fruits, especially berries, that are rich in vitamin C which can help maintain collagen levels and support more mature skin and bone health. With the right diet and the correct nutritional supplements you can start to manage your symptoms rather than let your symptoms manage you! Along with flushes and night sweats some of the other symptoms that women may experience include, mood swings, hair loss or thinning, low energy levels, low libido and of course the bones need to be looked after. Severity of symptoms may vary from woman to woman but there are some excellent natural remedies available. It’s just a question of finding the right one for you - with our help of course! Some of the more successful remedies we recommend are: • SAGE: may help with hot flushes and night sweats. • AGNUS CASTUS: This herb is an adap-
togenic and has a balancing effect on the body and hormones. • MENOMIN: This is your all-in-one peri-menopause and beyond multivitamin helps to regulate hormonal activity, maintain mucous membranes and helps reduce tiredness and fatigue. Simply take 2 capsules daily. • VALERIAN: has a sedative effect on the body so if disturbed, sleep such as waking with night sweats, is leaving you feeling drained try taking this. It is also useful if anxiety is an issue for you. It is vitally important to maintain the correct balance of essential vitamins and minerals during this time, such as B VITAMINS, CALCIUM, MAGNESIUM, ESSENTIAL FATTY ACIDS and VITAMIN C. There are some excellent multivitamin complexes available which have been specially formulated for use during and after the menopause. There are also some homeopathic remedies available in store which can help with hormonal changes. Until next time, stay healthy, From all at Horans.

Pupils at one school love singing and performing so much that they’re planning a fundraising busking day next week. | By Michelle Crean St Francis Special School Choir in Beaufort set up in September 2016 by Mary O’Riordan and Breda Courtney, are warming their vocals up with weekly rehersals and ready to entertain in the Killarney Outlet Centre from 11am-12pm, next Friday, December 6. Last year the school raised €1,125 with the same fundraiser and this money went towards new musical instruments, a sound system and the pupils got to experience a drumming session by Drum Dance Ireland, teacher Mary O’Riordan explained. “Last year we were so overwhelmed with the support we got in the Outlet Centre it was truly amazing. The money raised this year will go towards developing our school choir further. Our pupils are very excited, and all support is greatly appreciated.”
“We noticed that there was so much talent amongst our pupils and staff in the school. We set up the choir with the aim of performing at our end of year Mass. An electric piano was bought out of the Ring of Kerry Cycle funds and this has been a huge asset to our choir. Joan Ward provides the instrumental music for our choir.” She explained how the pupils contribute to their choir in many different ways. “They love singing and performing. We are so proud of our pupils and we have noticed that their faces light up when we perform. We use a whole sensory approach, for example we use Lámh signs and different props. Pupils and staff look forward to choir practice every week and the choir has united the school. Our busking trip last year has been our biggest and most successful event to-date and we are hoping that this year will top last year.”

DINE IN KILLARNEY
TOBA’s tasty arrival on High Street TOBA’s arrival in Killarney has added a touch of sparkle and warmth to High Street. The Asian eatery opened its doors just six weeks ago but has been a real hit with customers from all over. The building at 52 High Street, has had a full make-over and offers both a buzzing restaurant and a stylish private event room. The Asian food scene is thriving at the moment, explained General Manager, Darragh Walshe (pictured right). “The food is fresh, fast and most importantly delicious,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “There is a high ratio of fresh vegetables in all the dishes. The selection of spices brings interest and takes skill to combine and blend.” TOBA is committed to supporting local by using local suppliers for all their fresh produce. The name TOBA and its unique recipes come from a cookbook author living on Lake Toba in Indonesia. Irish lady Celine Carnegie, one of the TOBA team, produced the popular book ‘Authentic Tastes of Southeast Asia’. Catherine Fox, Marketing Director said she and the TOBA team had great fun adapting and working the recipes with Celine over numbers of months. “The name TOBA brings to mind the natural beauty of that area of Northern Indonesia and we like to think it
resonates with the magic of Killarney. The TOBA brand is designed to have a contemporary “city vibe”,” Catherine added. The atmosphere in the restaurant is brought to life by Front of House Manager, Marieta Poduselova, who has put together a wonderful choice of music that is proving to be a big hit with customers. “People love the playlist and we are delighted when people linger just to enjoy the vibe," she said. One huge draw to the new business is the upstairs party room which can accommodate approximately 70 people seated. “Customers who have booked our party room have a blast, as it’s just a great venue for that special occasion,” Catherine said. “We also see its potential as a corporate event room. We’re so excited about being in Killarney and are very committed to being part of a top-quality contemporary offering for locals and tourists alike,” Catherine said. And she added a reminder that a great gift idea for Christmas is a prosecco lunch or dinner with cocktails in Killarney’s newest happening place. Hannon family celebrate little Jack’s christening Deirdre and John Hannon from Park Road celebrated the christening of their second son last Saturday. The day of celebration began at Muckross Church and continued afterwards in the Dromhall Hotel. Family members came from England, Wexford and Killarney for Jack’s big occasion. Jack’s older brother Luke was also the centre of attention on the day. John’s sister Eimear Hannon-McDonald, who is currently based in Milton Keynes, was named as Jack’s Godmother while Deirdre’s brother John Buckley is the Godfather, and recently celebrated the arrival of his own son a few weeks before
Jack was born. Guests included Deirdre’s mother Josie, and John’s parents Paddy and Eileen who came from their home village of Bannow in County Wexford for the occasion. “It was great to have everyone in the same place,” Deirdre told the Killarney Advertiser. “It was lovely to have so many children there and my brother’s boy who was only born eight weeks before Jack. The Muckross Church was special, Luke was christened there too and it was my local church growing up.”

Double celebration for birthday girl Leah It was a busy week for Leah Kelly from Flesk Grove as she celebrated her 21st birthday – not once - but twice! Her week started with a party in Cork on November 19, the day of her actual birthday. She arrived home to Killarney for the weekend - just in time for round two - at the Dromhall Hotel on Saturday night.

“Tuesday night I celebrated with my friends in Cork and Saturday it was a family get together,” she said. “It was a really cool and relaxed night, some 21st parties can be manic and that is exactly what I did not want.” She is currently on a Level Six Supervisory and Management course in Cork but will be hoping her 21st birthday will lead to another celebration as she was due to take an job interview in the city yesterday (Thursday). “I love the course and I was working as a manager in a shop in Cork until a few weeks ago, but unfortunately that shop closed down,” she added. “Hopefully the week will end well with the interview – my parents would be delighted.” Family members who helped her celebrate on the night included her mother Jacinta Roche, her father Dermot, her step-father Mike Roche, her sister Elaine and her grandmother Breda Kelly. Her aunt, Laura Tyndall, made the trip from her mother’s homeplace on the Meath/Louth border.

TWO DECADES: Mike and Margaret Moriarty with some of their dedicated team. Moriarty’s Centra Faranfore will celebrate 20 years on Wednesday
Moriarty’s Centra Farranfore celebrates 20 years in business One of Kerry’s best-known and much loved shops is celebrating 20 years in business this coming Wednesday. Moriarty’s Centra, Farranfore, a landmark business situated on the crossroads of Kerry and in the heart of Farranfore village, opened its doors on December 4, 1999 and for owner Mike, wife Margaret and his three daughters Marie, Katie and Michelle, it has been a roller-coaster ride. But with Mike’s own charisma, work ethic and a few hairy moments along the way, the shop has grown to be more than just a food-store. Staff are a crucial part to the success of
Moriarty’s Centra with a total of 16 people employed and eight of them have more than 10 years’ of service. This year, three of them were nominated for awards through Centra’s Excellency Programme. Only this week, shop manager Deirdre Matthews was named top five store managers in the country, while Deli manager Mags Falvey and shop floor assistant Patrick Knightly are nominated as finalists in their categories. “I am very proud of that,” Mike told the
Killarney Advertiser. “To think there are 15,000 staff employed across all Centra stores in Ireland and four of ours are in the top 10 nationally.” Customer loyalty is something the Moriarty family have worked very hard on over the last 20 years and often go beyond the call of duty to make sure their customers are looked after. A few years ago, during a heavy winter snow, many of their customers could not leave their homes and Mike bought a 4x4 Jeep to deliver food supplies and coal to people on higher ground who were unable to get to the village.
Mike’s love of motorsport and Country Music and Margaret’s love of athletics and all things GAA mean that stars from these strands of life are regular visitors to the shop. A sense of their place within the community is also important to the Moriartys. They sponsor the local ladies GAA teams, amongst other teams, and Margaret is often seen picking litter from the hedges on either side of village. Next Wednesday, as the family officially mark their 20th anniversary they have plans to lay on a host of fun events to celebrate the occasion. Radio Kerry will broadcast its 11 to 1 Show from their mobile Outside Broadcast unit, Santa Claus himself is due a visit during the day, and local historian and former village publican Marie O’Sullivan will be on hand to talk about the storied village that is often referred to as the crossroads of Kerry.

Live crash demo teaches students road safety
The reality of a serious car crash brought home the impact to almost 1,500 Kerry students on Tuesday morning – as emergency services simulated a live road crash in the INEC car park. | By Michelle Crean Secondary school students from throughout Kerry, including schools from Killarney, witnessed the rescue efforts by dedicated members of the emergency services at the AXA Road Safety Roadshow. The event began at 10.30am with presentations by Gardaí, members of Kerry Fire Service and medical staff from emergency departments including a surgeon, who have all experienced the impact of fatal crashes on Kerry’s roads. And the event was a huge success, explained Dan Keane from the Kerry Fire Service, who was a speaker on the day. “Killarney Fire Service did a display and supplied the car,” Dan told the Killarney Advertiser.
“We had a young male driver, an actor, who was brought to safety. The Gardai went through the statistics by county and the country explaining that it was young male drivers who are most at risk. Peter McCarthy from the Traffic Corp described the whole ordeal while Eugene Tangney, a paramedic, told some scenarios.” Dan himself spoke as a First Responder followed by the surgeon, while a woman from North Kerry spoke about her son who died in similar circumstances. “The simulation was about showing the kids roughly what we deal with. What we’re trying to do is give them an idea what we do and what we deal with. It’s great for them to see it but more should be done and more regularly.”

“Biggest crowd ever” at Magic Parade Up to 20,000 people witnessed the spectacular opening parade of the Christmas in Killarney Festival on Saturday night. | By Sean Moriarty Crowds, five deep in some places, gathered to witness the spectacular Christmas in Killarney Magic Parade that weaved its way from the East Avenue Road to Main Street via College Street and Plunket Street. Saturday’s parade was the first of several that are set to continue every Satur-
day evening between now and the big day on December 25. The main attraction was Santa Claus himself who took time out from his busy schedule ahead of his worldwide toy delivery on Christmas Eve. Santa was supported by his team of hard-working elves and children from all of local primary schools.
Now in its 15th year, Christmas in Killarney has grown from humble beginnings and this year’s Magic Parade, supported by members of Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce, local businesses and Kerry County Council, was the biggest and most spectacular ever. The hard-working organising committee promise that Killarney will host a range of events including jaunting car sleigh rides, ice skating and further parades for the entire month of December culminat-
ing with a spectacular fireworks display on New Year’s Eve. “From a Chamber point of view, Saturday’s event was a spectacular success,” Chamber President Paul Sherry told the Killarney Advertiser. “We had the biggest crowd ever and we are delighted that everyone enjoyed themselves. There are five more parades to come, maybe not on the scale of the opening parade, but they will be very spectacular too.”

Indoor plants help filter the air Following the article about houseplants last week, I received some questions about cacti and succulents, orchids and the advantages of keeping houseplants, which I will try to answer today. Cacti and succulents store water - succulents in their leaves and cacti in their stems. The spines on cacti are actually their leaves! Both need to dry out, as they would in their natural environment, which is dry, arid country. When watering, give a good soaking, making sure the excess water drains away. Similarly, if your plant is a tropical one such as an orchid try to simulate their natural environment – which is in most cases, tropical rainforest. Orchids draw in their moisture through epiphytic roots. This is why they are always planted in soil which has a very rough texture. It needs
to be free draining yet moisture retentive. It helps to create the right environment by placing your orchids on a dish with gravel, filled with water, so that the water can evaporate keeping the orchid humid. This might sound unattractive but the tray can be camouflaged by other moisture loving plants such as a collection of ferns and become a very pretty feature! Indoor plants are not only pretty to look at, but they also filter the air. NASA have done several studies into the effect of indoor plants on the air quality inside, and published its first list of air-filtering plants in 1989. The reason they were researching plants was to see if they would be capable of filtering air in space-stations. The results are quite astounding. Plants can remove all sorts of common chemicals in the air, such as benzene, formaldehyde, trichloroethylene and ammonia. Spider plants, ferns, in particular the Boston fern, Mother in Law’s Tongue, Peace Lilly, Anthuriums and ivy are all on NASA’s list. Research shows one plant per 10 square metres will do the job. So, consider taking a plant into the office, especially if you suffer from headaches, nausea, fatigue or eye irritation – you might be suffering from Sick Building Syndrome, which a Spider plant or two can help relieve!

Uachtarán Chumann Lúthchleas Gael Seán Ó hÓráin added that he warmly congrat-
ulates Ray McManus and the whole Sportsfile team on the 23rd edition of ‘A Season of Sundays’. It would make the perfect Christmas gift for any GAA fan, retailing at €27.95 from bookstores nationwide and online at www.sportsfile.com.

For fans of the band however, they have just announced they will not be touring to promote the album, as they are concerned about the environmental effect their travelling will have on the current issue of climate change.

A WEEKLY ROUND-UP OF NEWS • VIEWS FROM KERRY AND AROUND THE WORLD
INSPIRED BY DANNY CASEY
Early childhood expert to host Killarney talk Early Childhood Education expert Dr Mary O’Kane will hold a talk next Friday, December 6 in Killarney Library.

Winter Solstice event for Kerry Hospice Foundation Celebrate this year’s Winter Solstice on the shortest day of the year - Saturday December 21 - in aid of Kerry Hospice Foundation Palliative Care. These ancient sacred summits, ‘The Paps of Anú’, resemble a pair of breast shaped hills known as ‘The Paps’ in the Derry Na Saggart Mountains close to the Cork Kerry border. The Paps have long been associated with mythology, mystic and

majesty. The Goddess Anú represents all that is earthly fertile, abundant and protective. With kind permission of local landowner Sean O’Donoghue, Glenflesk, and neighbour Jimmy Moynihan, the walk departs from Garries Bridge - the first bridge after St Agatha’s Church, Glenflesk, meeting at 5.45am. A long walk in to the summit has two strenuous inclines, leading to the Western Pap at 690 metres. Sunrise and craic begin with Glenflesk’s finest musi-
cians Derry and Rosie Healy, setting the pace for a Kerry polka set, followed by an ancient ceremonial blessing by another Glenflesk native, Mary Cronin. The trek will be led by expert mountaineer Donie Mulcahy and crew. After descending the ancient mountain, a ceremonial solstice of coffee and scones takes place in the Plaza Hotel, Killarney at 10.30am. Donation of €20 per adult will be collected on the morning and afterwards in Killarney Plaza Hotel. It is advised to wear/bring a head torch, warm clothes, hiking boots, waterproof jacket and pants, gloves, hat, food and a drink. A good level of fitness is required. Guides will be on duty for gear check before departure.
How to save Thanksgiving The USA celebrated its national Thanksgiving holiday yesterday (Thursday) and President Trump marked the occasion by telling us he is fighting to save America’s biggest day - yet nobody knows why. This needs some context. Everyone will be aware of the campaigns across the world where religious festivals are frowned upon and are given neutral and generic names instead. That is why we often hear “Happy Holidays” in place of “Happy Christ-
mas”. Trump believes there is a similar plan to undermine Thanksgiving and with his expected levels on misunderstandings, announced on Wednesday that he wants to save the national day. "You know, some people want to change the name Thanksgiving. They don't want to use the term Thanksgiving," the president told the crowd of supporters, without explaining what he was referring to. "That was true also with Christmas, but now everybody's using Christmas again. Remember, I said that?
The talk, which takes place at 1pm, will be ‘Supporting Confidence, Independence and Resilience’. These three aspects of development are key in preparing children for so many areas of their lives both as young children and supporting children as they transition into adulthood. Teenagers are under so much pressure today, building these strong supports in childhood can help them to negotiate difficulties later in life. Dr O’Kane, a lecturer in Psychology, Early Childhood Studies and Education, will explain the interaction between these three aspects and offers practical advice on how to support children in these important areas. Dr O’Kane is a regular guest on the parenting slot on Ireland AM and she is a constant contributor to the Alison Curtis Show on Today FM. Her research interests include childhood transitions, self-esteem and well-being, and the value of play. Due to the popularity of this talk booking is essential. To book please phone 064 6632655 or email killarney@kerrylibrary.ie.
Now, we're going to have to do a little work on Thanksgiving. People have different ideas why it shouldn't be called Thanksgiving. But everybody in this room I know loves the name Thanksgiving and we're not changing it." There are no known campaigns in the US calling for Thanksgiving to be given a generic name. A piece in the Huffington Post, which was published last week, examined the carbon footprint of various parts of the Thanksgiving celebration including travel made by 50 million Americans to visit family. Seemingly, this ‘attack’ on Thanksgiving was the inspiration for Trump’s latest outburst.

Kerry Cancer Support Group needs your votes Kerry Cancer Support Group are delighted to be shortlisted in the Permanent TSB Community Fund, an exciting new community programme which will see €100k distributed to five worthy charitys around the country. FUNDING: Minister Brendan Griffin TD, has announced funding of up to €65,000 through Fáilte Ireland to support and develop Killarney’s St Patrick’s Day events over the next three years. Fáilte Ireland supports St Patrick’s Day celebrations Minister of State for Tourism and Sport, Brendan Griffin TD, has announced funding of up to €65,000 through Fáilte Ireland that will help support and develop Killarney’s St Patrick’s Day events over the next three years. Minister Griffin made the announcement at the Kerry Tourism Summit in The Brehon Hotel in Killarney. As the National Tourism Development Authority, Fáilte Ireland has identified festivals as a key component for tourism growth. The tourism development body is aiming to grow overseas visitors coming to Ireland to attend a festival to 300,000 by 2022. This growth is expected to generate €150million in revenue. Taking place outside the traditional peak tourism season combined with the geographical spread of celebrations across Ireland, St Patrick’s Day provides a significant opportunity to grow tourism and extend the season. “Festivals and events play an important role in delivering brilliant visitor experiences and help to spread the benefits of
tourism to communities throughout Ireland,” Minister of State Griffin said. “The commitment of Fáilte Ireland funding and development support for Killarney’s St Patrick’s Day celebrations is a welcome boost and a significant opportunity to attract overseas visitors to Kerry outside the traditional peak tourism season.” Fáilte Ireland’s Head of Festivals, Ciara Sugrue, added that they are positioning Ireland as ‘the’ place to celebrate St Patrick’s Day. “A sizeable number of visitors go to Dublin every year for the St Patrick’s Festival but as part of our strategy to spread the benefits of tourism, we also want to develop St Patrick’s Day celebrations in locations across the country,” she said. “With a strong international proposition and a broad range of accommodation in the local area, Killarney’s St Patrick’s Day celebrations have the potential to motivate significant numbers of overseas visitors. We look forward to working with the organising committee over the next three years on a development plan that will see real growth.”
Wall St. giant dies in America Denis Kelleher, whose rise from cash strapped immigrant to Wall Street fame was an American Dream story personified, has died aged 80. Mr Kelleher died on Friday, November 22 at his home on Staten Island surrounded by his family. Mr Kelleher, the son of a shoemaker began his life in Gneeveguilla. He moved to the United States in 1958. Through the decades he rose to found
his own financial services company, Wall Street Access, a money management and stock brokerage firm and member of the New York Stock Exchange. He set up a mentoring programme where students from his former school, St Brendan’s College, received first hand training on Wall St. Kelleher survived the 911 attacks as a flight home was diverted to Newfoundland in Canada at around the same time he was due to attend a meeting in the World Trade Centre.
The Kerry charity was nominated by local branches and are one of five in the South Region. Manager with KCSG Breda Dyland said that this nomination was really a welcome surprise to the charity and that winning would be a fantastic start to 2020 which will be their 10th anniversary year in transport.
“In this time we have transported patients from Kerry, West Cork and now West Limerick to over 22,000 appointments,” she said. “The €20k would mean a great deal to us as we plan to replace our Cork bus with a wheelchair accessible one and this would be a very welcome start to that fund so please take a little time to support us and to vote.” Casting your vote for this essential local service can be done by visiting Region South www.permanenttsb.ie/responsiblebusiness and following the instructions from there. Voting is open until December 20, and the winner in each region will be announced in the New Year.
VOTE: Breda Dyland and Linda Daly from Kerry Cancer Support Group with representatives from Permanent TSB.
Second Killarney screening of 'Kilimanjaro Mama’ The award-winning documentary of how Kerry woman Louise Quill set up the Tír na nÓg orphanage in Tanzania will be screened at Killarney Cinema on Thursday night (December 5). 'Kilimanjaro Mama’ tells the story of why Quill decided to set up the orphanage, what drives her, and the impact it has had on her own health and well-being. The film made its screen debut at the recent Kerry Film Festival, where it won
‘Best Feature Film’ and due to popular demand it is getting another showing in Killarney next week. “We would love it to be another sell out show as all money raised is going directly to the project,” said Deirdre Burke who is a volunteer at the orphanage. Tickets can be purchased via Eventbrite. ie by searching for 'Kilimanjaro Mama’. Early booking is advisable – just 50 tickets remained when the Killarney Advertiser went to press last night (Thursday).

SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL
Beauty - By Jill O'Donoghue

Water is extremely therapeutic for your feet Just because our feet are hidden away over the winter months - don’t stop looking after them. It’s important to keep toenails trimmed correctly and hard skin softened. If you have uncomfortable feet it shows in your face. You can be more irritable and even the easiest of tasks become enormous. I often hear people tell me that they mean to look after them through the winter but the old saying ‘out of sight out of mind’ and after a few months of neglect, a small issue becomes a big one. Soaking the feet regularly in Epsom Salts has an anti-inflammation effect, and can be very beneficial for both your feet, mind, body and soul. I don’t know anyone that soaked their feet after a long day and didn’t like it. You always feel like you’re walking on clouds after a simple foot soak. Water is extremely therapeutic and calming. With people mainly showering now and not having time for
5
baths the feet aren’t getting enough TLC. We use them every day so it’s important to look after them. You wouldn’t drive your car without giving it oil or getting it serviced once a year - yet you expect your feet to do everything we did in our early 20s. Life just seems to be getting busier so we need to look after ourselves so much more. If you suffer from diabetes, or just can’t reach your toes, or if you feel your toenails have got a lot thicker, we can help you by reducing the thickness of the nails and cutting them safely. Whether you’re suffering from ingrown toenails or corns and calluses, we can help with all feet issues. Call Jill for booking or more information on 064 6632966.

A perfect time to start does not exist As we come towards the end of the year many of us will have already switched off. A subconscious decision has been made that this year “is a write off” and “I’ll start again in January”, but the reality is you don’t need a January, you don’t need a Monday, you don’t need a “perfect time to start” - it simply does not exist. January is similar to every other month, it contains around four weeks; 31 days and a few weekends wedged in between. Granted, it’s colder and darker in January so there may be some romantism to “putting the head down and embracing the grind” in January. But I assure you, the work you do now is just as valuable as the work you do in January. There are four weeks to Christmas. Anyone who knows me or has read any of our prior columns knows we’re not into extremes and believe that life is for living. However, giving yourself too much leeway and waiting for the “right time” can
last months and even years. Over the next few weeks we’ll be sharing practical healthy tips for this time of year, sharing a new item or two to focus on each week. The first thing I need you to do is to create accountability. This is vital. Being answerable to somebody is a bedrock to most people’s healthy lifestyle whether that’s a coach, a friend or family member. Have some clear targets and be held accountable to them.
WEEK 1
Eat slowly: This may sound like something your mother said to you at the dinner table when you were 10, but she was right. Eating slowly almost inevitably leads to eating less, feeling more in control of eating, as well as more mindful and aware. Eating slowly can be done anywhere, anytime, with any food, in any situation. This includes binge eating. This is a simple habit to understand, though rarely an easy one to do. Create a sleep ritual: Try to sleep 7/8 hours per night. We need enough good quality sleep to be healthy and fit. Many of us will struggle to get the required sleep we need, but one simple but effective thing to do is to create a ritual around bedtime. • Put the phone/screen away at least 30 minutes before bedtime • Have the room cool and dark • Write in a journal or practice some breathing • Put simply; a sleep ritual is a set of behaviours and a planned period of time before bed where you purposely relax and gear down. Next week we’ll add some more habits for you to practice and have some more helpful hints and tips to navigate the festive season.

Lissivigeen PARTY: A great night was enjoyed by everyone at Lissivigeen Community Alert Christmas Party at the Torc Hotel last Friday night. Dancers took to the floor early with lively music from the guest band Best of Friends. 93-year-old Eugene O'Keeffe’s rendition of the well-known 1916 song Grace was very well received by the large audience. Later on Aoife O'Sullivan, a 9-year-old pupil at Lissivigeen National School, was very impressive when she played two tunes on the
Cancertino.
Killarney Access Group PARKING ON FOOTPATHS: When a driver decides to park his/her car or van up on the footpath do they ever think about the people who use the footpath, where are they to go if their pathway is blocked? What about the person with the buggy and small child, are they to walk on the road? What about the elderly person who is unable to squeeze by on the footpath because a car/van is blocking their way? Does the driver ever think about the person in the wheelchair who has no way of getting past and no way of getting off the footpath to pass the vehicle? What about the visually impaired person who is trying to negotiate their way on the footpath and then is presented with this hurdle? Parking on footpaths can have very dangerous consequences for pedestrians being forced to walk on the road because of the ignorance of drivers who have decided to block the pathway. We are appealing to motorists and drivers to park responsibly and with consideration. Footpaths are for people, not for cars. Do not park up on the footpath, it is wrong, it is dangerous and it is illegal.

Magic of Christmas captured at Muckross It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas at Muckross House & Gardens as they launched their first Christmas lights switch on event last weekend. It was a truly enchanting experience
capturing the magic for all who attended. Santa arrived from the North Pole accompanied by Mrs Claus to officially light up the Muckross Garden Restaurant. They were welcomed to Muckross by the Holy Cross Mercy Primary
School Choir singing ‘Santa Claus is Coming to Town’, followed by a countdown to the lights by Mr and Mrs Claus with the help of all the boys and girls. The team from the Garden Restaurant laid on a truly festive spread with mulled wine, mince pies, reindeer
cookies and gingerbread men. The festive spirit has definitely arrived at Muckross House & Gardens and their enchanting decorations are not to be missed. For more information, please see www.muckross-house.ie.

Local dealer marks Peugeot’s 50th year Management from Reen’s Rathmore, main Peugeot dealer for Kerry, will attend a special celebration as the Gowan Group marks their 50th anniversary as the French make’s Irish distributer in Dublin this weekend. Appointed main Peugeot dealers in 1987, the Rathmore garage is one of Ireland’s longest serving Peugeot dealers. The business grew to new heights in 2005 when a new state-of-the-art showroom was opened on the existing site in Rathmore. The showroom underwent a refresh in 2018, adopting the new Peugeot cor-
porate identity and external signage. Increasingly recognised in their locality for their outstanding customer service, the family have a strong ethos of always putting the customer first. No stranger to awards, Reen’s Rathmore was ‘Peugeot Dealer of the Year’ in 2006, 2015 and 2017, before clinching the title again for 2018 for the second consecutive year. “We would be hopeful, with a stroke of luck on the night, that we will get an award but you never know,” said John Reen. “I wish Gowan Distributors and their staff the very best of luck, they have been pleasure to deal with over the last 32 years.”

Sister December comes with sad regret, The day, the month, we’ll never forget, You live in our hearts and walk by our sides, From Heaven above you are always our guide. A silent thought, a quiet prayer, For someone special in God’s care.
My heart has been left broken, Since the day you had to go, And the memories I treasure dearly, Are in the tears that still flow.
We’re missing you a little more, Each time we hear your name, We’ve cried so many tears, Yet our heart’s broken just the same.

No one knows the pain we bear, When we all meet and you’re not there, We talk, we laugh, we play our part, But behind it all lie broken hearts. You gave us years of laughter and happiness, Then sorrow came with tears, You left us lovely memories, We will treasure though the years. Sadly Missed by your loving Niece Antoinette and Billy

NO FAITH: CPA chairman Micheál Briody has accused the GAA of using the fixtures task force as a "Trojan horse". Pic: Piaras Ó Mídheach/Sportsfile.
No end in sight for fixtures debacle As November rolls into December, Adam Moynihan asks (for the third year in a row) why the GAA still haven’t resolved the fixtures crisis The short days. The long nights. The driving rain and cutting winds that would make even the proudest of Gaels curse their ancestors for ever setting foot on such a miserable rock in the first place. It’s winter in Ireland. And none of us want to be here. Well, the good news for most of us that we can take a break from the bleakness, or at least hide from it. We can head away for a weekend, or a week, or even two if the bank balance allows. We can go for a hot whiskey in a warm pub of a Saturday night. We can stay inside and spend time with the family. We can sit at home by the fire of a wintry Sunday morning and read the Killarney Advertiser (or another, lower quality publication). To sum up, we can basically do what-
ever we want with our free time. Our free time is free. If you’re an amateur Gaelic footballer, however, it’s unlikely that you possess that same level of freedom. When it’s football season, football owns you. Missing any of the two/three training sessions a week is not acceptable. On some days off, private gym sessions are mandatory. Alcohol is often banned, if not directly by management then by a kind of self-policed group prohibition. And, due to the unpredictable nature of the calendar (particularly for club players), planning holidays during the season is simply not an option.
12 MONTHS A YEAR
All of this wouldn’t be as much of an ask if it was limited to a certain period
SPORT
22.11.2019 of time. In Ireland, the basketball season lasts around six months. The soccer season, at the highest level, lasts eight. Those sports have professional and semi-professional players but they still get a break. In Gaelic football and hurling, two sports played exclusively by amateurs, the season starts in January and typically runs deep into December. When you sit down as a team in January and commit for the year, you really are committing for an entire year. Now, if you’re willing to be that dedicated to your sport then there’s a very good chance that you love it and you’re happy to accept that sacrifices have to be made. But there isn’t a footballer in the country (of sound mind) who will tell you that they’re happy with a 12-month-long season. I spoke to a number of top local players about this very issue a year ago and there was universal disillusionment when it came to the current GAA schedule. “There’s no break, and there’s burnout both mentally and physically from it,” one player said. “I find it very difficult at this time of year because pitches are heavier, days are darker, the weather is shite. It’s not an enjoyable time to play.” To a man, they were fed up and eager for reform but here we are again, heading into December with competitions still ongoing. In this part of the world, the East Kerry Championship is due to finish up on December 8 with the final of Division 1 of the County League slated for December 15. The current schedule is unfair, it’s unhealthy and it has been common practice for far too long. So why has nothing changed? To be frank, it’s hard to come up with any explanation other than “the powers that be don’t care”.
CPA WITHDRAWAL
There is clearly no appetite for meaningful fixture reform in the upper echelons of the GAA. If there was, the Club Players Association would not have withdrawn last week from a task force that was set up in May to tackle the issue. Explaining the CPA’s decision, chairman Micheál Briody claimed that the task force was merely “a Trojan horse designed to give cover to the GAA authorities to ratify the status quo while having the appearance of consultation and thoughtful deliberation. In reality, it will simply be a ratification process for the newly introduced Tier Two football championship and retention of the Super 8s”. The phrase “status quo” will send shivers down the spine of every footballer and hurler the length and breadth of the country. With the CPA, who describe themselves as a sin-
The current schedule is unfair, it’s unhealthy and it has been common practice for far too long. So why has nothing changed? gle-issue party (i.e. the resolution of the fixtures crisis), and the GPA, who represent intercounty players, on board, it was hoped that the specially convened task force would finally push through real change. In addition to GAA President John Horan’s preferred Tier Two option, which has already been given the go-ahead by special congress despite fierce opposition in some quarters, there are ostensibly two other proposals on the table. One is a flipped calendar, which would see intercounty competitions played at the start of the year and club thereafter, and the other is a so-called 4x8, which would see an evening up of the provinces into four leagues of eight with two 4x4 championships (Tier One and Tier Two) seeded based on league performance. The report is due to be published this week and it is still possible for the task force’s proposals to supersede those of special congress but, concerned that those two alternatives are not being taken seriously by GAA “insiders”, the CPA have walked.
CASH COW
It seems as though the suits at HQ are more concerned with milking their cash cow (intercounty games at Croke Park) than addressing the concerns of 99% of their playing population. It’s so demoralising for club players because it all points towards more of the same. It may sound a bit melodramatic but it’s times like these I’m reminded of an old quote - a variant of many other similar quotes before it - by US presidential candidate George McGovern. “I'm fed up to the ears with old men dreaming up wars for young men to die in.” John Horan and many men just like him at local level are calling the shots but, unfortunately, it’s the guys who take to the field on a Sunday who are making all the sacrifices. You wonder what it will take for the GAA to actually sit up and listen to the players. Words alone are clearly not enough.

Legion get the better of Fossa in quarters
PROVIDER: Killarney Legion forward Conor Keane was pulling the strings for Legion in their comfortable victory over Fossa.
EAST KERRY CHAMPIONSHIP: QUARTER-FINAL _________________________________________________________________________________
Killarney Legion
3-9 | Fossa 0-6
DERREEN
| By Eamonn Fitzgerald Legion qualified for the semi-final of the Dr O’Donoghue Cup on Sunday by defeating Fossa 3-9 to 0-6 in Derreen. Conditions were very difficult for the players after the incessant early morning rain and players found it very hard to keep their footing. Still, the commitment was there by both teams and that made for some exciting passages of football. The one-sided scoreline tells its own story but Fossa gave a plucky display, especially considering the fact that they were without their captain and key centre forward Paudie Clifford. They got off to a bright start by shooting the opening point but Billy McGuire equalised for the Legion in the sixth minute. David Clifford eased Fossa ahead in the ninth minute but James O’Donoghue levelled for the Legion a minute later. O’Donoghue then put them ahead in the 15th minute with a good long-range free. Meanwhile, Danny Sheahan was doing a good job at full back on David Clifford, who lacked support. Conor Keane was fouled in the 16th minute and he pointed the resultant free. Jack O’Neill added a point and Billy McGuire was on hand in the 23rd minute to score the first goal, putting Legion ahead 1-5 to 0-2. Jonathan Lyne, who was very impressive, and Clifford
exchanged points to leave the Legion ahead 1-6 to 0-3 at half-time.
SECOND HALF
Fossa had the aid of the breeze in the second half but they failed to score. Early attempts by Anthony Wharton, Micheál O’Keeffe and Tadhg O’Shea were all wide of the target. Legion took over despite the best efforts of Wharton and Eoin Talbot and points by James O’Donoghue and Conor Keane made it 1-8 to 0-3. Substitute Donal Lyne struck for the inevitable goal in the 52nd minute and two minutes later substitute Darragh Lyne raised another green flag to make it 3-8. One more point for the Legion finished the scoring. They were well served on the day by James O’Donoghue, Conor Keane, Billy McGuire, Cian Gammell, Danny Sheahan and Jonathan Lyne. Although he was beaten on three occasions, Fossa goalkeeper Shane O’Sullivan played very well on a busy afternoon between the posts. Others to do well were David Clifford, Eoin Talbot and Anthony Wharton. Referee for the game was James O’Sullivan from Firies who did a good job in difficult conditions. There was just one flare-up in the 20th minute but that was quickly resolved. Legion manager Stephen Stack will look with confidence to the semi-final battle with Gneeveguilla, who had a great victory (2-8 to 0-13) over fierce rivals Rathmore.

High stakes semi for Spa and Dr Crokes EK CHAMPIONSHIP: SEMI-FINAL
______________________________________________________________________
Spa v Dr Crokes Sunday at 2pm Fitzgerald Stadium Sunday’s Killarney derby between Spa and Dr Crokes promises to be a high-octane affair as both sides vie for a spot in the final of this year’s O’Donoghue Cup. This rivalry has been fairly one-sided down through the years but Spa turned the tables back in June when they picked up a long-awaited 1-14 0-15 league victory up in Tullig. A firsthalf goal by Ciarán Spillane kept Spa in contention that day and late points by Shane Cronin (two) and Ryan O’Carroll proved crucial as the Crokes fell to a shock defeat. All things told, it was an up-and-down league campaign for Spa and they finished up seventh in Division 1 with six wins and five defeats. They were naturally disappointed to have exited the Intermediate in the group phase but there was some joy in the championship for many of their players as 13 Spa men were part of the East Kerry team who won the Kerry Senior Football Championship earlier this month.
The absence through injury of Dara Moynihan is a blow but the fine form of those East Kerry boys, particularly the likes of Dan O’Donoghue, Liam Kearney, Shane Cronin and Evan Cronin, bodes well heading into the business end of the East Kerry Championship. Victory over Crokes on Sunday would send Spa through to their first final since 1989 when they beat Gneeveguilla after a replay. In recent years, the O’Donoghue Cup has been an opportunity for the Crokes to put the cherry on top of the icing on top of their cake. This time out, the O’Donoghue Cup is the whole cake. Last weekend’s defeat to Dingle in a County League back game means that the Crokes are now facing the unfamiliar prospect of finishing 2019 trophyless. Remarkably, the Lewis Road club have won at least one piece of silverware in each of the past 15 years and they will be keen to keep that run going by retaining the trophy they won back from Rathmore in 2018. The winners of this match will take on either Legion or Gneeveguilla in the final next week. With the Crokes failing to advance to Munster for the first time in four years, the East Kerry Board will (barring replays) manage to get the tournament finished by December 8, two weeks earlier than last year’s decider which took place on December 22.
GRUDGE MATCH: Michael Foley of Spa being chased by Alan O'Sullivan of Crokes when the sides met in the league in June. Spa won by two points.
Gneeveguilla looking for another scalp EK CHAMPIONSHIP: SEMI-FINAL
______________________________________________________________________
Legion v Gneeveguilla Saturday at 1pm Fitzgerald Stadium The Magic of the Cup™ rarely applies to the East Kerry Championship. Since 2004, only two teams (Dr Crokes and Rathmore) have lifted the O’Donoghue Cup so it has been a lean spell indeed for the underdogs. Can Gneeveguilla buck the trend? This year’s Division 3 champions were fancied by many to give out-of-form Rathmore a good game last weekend but I’m not sure how many people thought they’d go out and actually win it. But win it they did.
A Shane Crowley goal gave the Junior Premier outfit the perfect start and they led by five, 1-6 to 0-4, at the interval. A second goal early in the second helped to open up a commanding 2-7 to 0-4 lead and despite a spirited Rathmore comeback, they just about held on to win by a solitary point. Gneeveguilla defender DJ Murphy was named Man of the Match. Next up for Gneeveguilla are another Division 1 club in the Legion. The Killarney side had a resounding victory over Fossa in the last round, eventually winning with 15 points to spare. As a senior club, Legion will naturally be favourites to advance to their fourth final since 2013 but Stephen Stack’s side will have to be wary of the threat posed by their semi-final opponents. If they do manage to get over the line, an all-Killarney final against either the Crokes or Spa beckons.

K erry to face Dublin in league opener
Peter Keane’s Kerry will be back in Croke Park on Saturday, January 25 when they get their 2020 National League campaign up and running with a difficult away fixture against Dublin. It will be Kerry’s third competitive match in a row against the Dubs in Croke Park following the thrilling All-Ireland final and subsequent replay back in September. Jim Gavin’s side just pulled away in the rematch to secure their fifth consecutive All-Ireland title. Kerry, who were defeated by Mayo in the 2019 Division 1 final, will face Galway in Tralee in Round 2 before making the long trip up to Omagh to take on Tyrone. Two weeks later, on February 23, The Kingdom will host Meath in the only league game that will be played in the Fitzgerald Stadium in 2020. Away matches against Mayo and Monaghan will follow before Donegal visit Tralee in the final round on March 22. |
C lub finals brought forward to January
The 2019/20 All-Ireland Club semi-finals and finals will be played in January 2020, the GAA have revealed. Traditionally played in February and March, the final rounds have been brought forward with a view to streamlining the club season, which in previous years had stretched for up to 15 months for teams like Dr Crokes who reached the final in 2017 and 2019. Next season (2020/21), the semi-finals will be played in December with the final taking place in early January. |
B ig win for Scotts Lakers in Belfast
Unperturbed by the long journey and early tip-off time, the Scotts Lakers picked up an impressive 94-81 win over the Ulster University Elks in Belfast on Saturday. The Lakers, who had to leave Killarney at 4.30am that morning, were in control for
much of the game with Danish forward Toby Christensen registering a season high of 38 points. Three-point ace Brian O’Neill added 21 and point guard Mick McGinn chipped in with 15 as the Killarney club improved to 7-3. Shane McCarthy’s team will face the Limerick Sport Eagles away on December 8 with the next home game coming on December 14 when they welcome the Limerick Celtics to Killarney. | K illarney Rugby youngsters
power to victory
The Killarney RFC U18s knew that victory over Newcastlewest in their final group game would send them through to the Munster Cup and that’s exactly what they got as a complete performance saw them prevail on a scoreline of 25-11. Tries by Craig McKenzie Vass and Gary Randles (two) proved crucial for the hosts while prop Ciarán O’Brian added 10 points with the boot. Killarney now await the draw with next round scheduled to take place on December 14. |

S parling winner sends Celtic through
Kerry champions Killarney Celtic are through to the semi-final of the Munster Champions Trophy after a dramatic 3-2 victory over Hibernians of Waterford. Stephen McCarthy gave the Celts the lead inside the opening minute but Hibs equalised with 25 minutes on the clock. McCarthy fired his side back into the lead 10 minutes later and that looked like being the winner until the 87th minute when the visitors made it 2-2. There was still time for one more twist, however, and when Wayne Sparling clipped an inviting cross to the back post, younger brother Terry was on hand to tap in a memorable, stoppage time winner. Celtic now await the draw for the last four where they will face Doolan’s Cow, St Michael’s or Rathkeale/Dunmanway. Next up is an FAI Junior Cup Round 5 tie against St Kevin’s on Sunday. Kick-off in Celtic Park is at 3pm.

Fans attending Saturday’s Rentokil-Initial Killarney Historic Rally will need to be aware that the stage will turn right at the famous Avoca Café at the Gap itself and not the usual run down into Kenmare. New clerk of the course Darren McCormick has put his own stamp on the rally and one of the new features is an extended version of Ireland’s most-famous rally stage. After turning right, the stage will follow the Sneem Road for just over 3km. At this point, the stage will turn left into the Blackwater Valley and will use roads previously used in either the Rally of the Lakes or the Killarney Historic Rally. The combined stage runs at a staggering 23km, making it one of the longest stages in Irish rallying this year. “We will have motorcycle marshals directing people where to park along here and it is very important that they obey these instructions,” said the clerk of the course Darren McCormick. “We are grateful that Avoca will be open but they cannot serve breakfast to the fans if staff cannot gain access to the café.”

K ingdom of Kerry Rally Championship
This weekend’s Historic Rally will have a bearing on the final results of the Moriarty’s Centra Kingdom of Kerry Rally Championship. Tralee driver Darren Young looks set to lift the title but he could be robbed at the final hurdle by Alan Ring. The Castleisland driver needs to win his class, and by default the overall rally, to take the title from Young. Paul Nagle needs a strong result too in his efforts to secure the co-driver’s side of the championship but if the newly crowned Irish Tarmac champion was to falter at the final hurdle, then any navigator in the top 10 has a realistic chance of taking the title. Nagle’s main rivals this weekend include Ronald O’Riordan who is co-driving for Pat Looney in a Ford Escort Mk1 and Denis Coffey who is alongside Dave Slattery in an Escort Mk2. | R een to join Motorsport
Ireland Academy in 2020
Kieran Reen will join the Motorsport Ireland Rally Academy in 2020. The academy was established to provide promising young drivers with a pathway from the junior rallying ranks through to competing at World Rally Championship. The Headford-based driver was one of six young rally drivers to make the final cut in the Billy Coleman Young Rally Driver of the Year nominations. That list was whittled down to three during the interview process at Motorsport Ireland’s Dublin headquarters last week but the young Kerry driver did not make the final cut. However, he will be included in all activities run by the academy next season including media training, pacenote making guidance and professional tests in state of the art rally cars alongside mentoring from the programme’s managers.

In the B race, Michael Coghlan got 10th position in a large field, coming ever closer to that podium, followed closely by Killarney CC clubmate Eoghan Barry. The main event of the day was a field
