Smalltalk Golfer Simon Gallivan answers Adam Moynihan’s questions

Save Christmas in Killarney WHEN we exclusively revealed last week that the Christmas in Killarney Festival was in danger of being cancelled due to lack of funding, it prompted a huge response. Days later, our web broadcast of a video interview with Kate O’Leary, chairperson of the festival committee, touched hearts across the world. Kate’s eloquent, passionate plea to save the festival reached over 10,000 people on Facebook within a short space of time and drew enquiries from as far afield as the United States as to how people can help. Now the town really needs to put its weight behind the festival to safeguard it. “We’re at a stage now where we nearly owe as much as we need,” said Kate. “Christmas in Killarney has been the launchpad for Christmas festivals all over the country but it is

Race You There! also the benchmark for other festivals in Killarney. “Can you possibly imagine Killarney without the Christmas in Killarney Festival?” But it is the “same people” who support the event time and time again, added the festival chairperson. “And then there’s other people who put their heads down when they see you coming,” she said. “To paraphrase John F Kennedy, it’s not really about what Christmas in Killarney can do for you, it’s what

Purple Power THERE were celebrations for Killarney when we learned the town has retained the coveted Purple Flag. So what does this accolade mean? The Purple Flag is accreditation that our town is a premier night-time destination. The interim award follows the full review last August. Paul O’Neill, chairman of the Killarney Purple Flag working group, thanked those involved in retaining the flag. “It’s a real team effort with the Killarney Municipal District, members of the business community and youth sectors,” he said. Paul congratulated Tralee on its recent awarding of

you can do for Christmas in Killarney.” She added: “It’s not about putting money into businesses – that’s a side benefit. There isn’t a single family that CIK that hasn’t been positively affected; it’s what Christmas is about in Killarney now.” Volunteers are ready, willing and able to do the work, but as the festival chairperson says, they “can’t magic up the money”. To help support the event, contact Kate on 087-2446131.

THE fantastic Kerry artists Walking on Cars return to the INEC for their last 2017 date on December 22. The band, who are made up of childhood friends Pa Sheehy, vocalist, acoustic guitar and piano, Sorcha Durham, piano, Dan Devane on lead guitar, Paul Flannery on bass and Evan Hadnett, drums, have been together since 2010. On the day that the band announced their album release in Ireland last year, it was the only album pre-order higher than Adele on any iTunes store anywhere in the world. The past year has been an epic one for the group. They were awarded the prestigious European Border Breakers Award following in the footsteps of previous winners including Mumford and Sons, Adele, Kodaline and Dolores O’Riordan. Excitement is at fever pitch as tickets go on sale at 10am this morning, from www.inec.ie, 0646671555 or Ticketmaster outlets nationwide, 0818 719 300, and online, www.ticketmaster.ie

Town Talk

Killarney Brings Yeats Painting Back Home LAST week we highlighted that many in Ireland felt the Yeats family collection should belong to the nation. The collection hit the headlines ahead of being auctioned at Sotheby’s in London on Wednesday. So it comes as great news that the Trustees of Muckross House and the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) of the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, were successful in their bid to purchase a painting by John Butler Yeats, which is of historic significance to Muckross House. The painting, “Mrs Herbert of Muckross with a Maltese Terrier” is by John Butler Yeats (JBY). This was the artist’s first big commission which he received in 1872 and completed in 1873. It was painted in front of the wallpaper that is still perfectly preserved in Muckross House.

Mrs Herbert was born Emily Julia Charlotte Keane in January 1848 and married Major Henry Arthur Herbert (known as Harry) in October 1866. It is said that, shortly after the painting was completed, Mrs Herbert left Muckross and never returned. Consequently, her husband refused to accept the portrait and it ended up in the room of JBY’s friend Edward Dowden, at Trinity College. Following the death of Dowden, the painting was returned to the Yeats family where it since remained. Emily and Harry were divorced in 1882. She died in 1911. Geraldine Rosney, chairperson of the Trustees of Muckross House, said the Trustees are happy to welcome it to its rightful place. “The acquisition of such a significant painting is a further example of this commitment on the part of the Board of Trustees.” The Trustees are looking forward to unveiling the painting in the very near future.

Tidy Towns

Team Killarney

Strikes Gold

THERE were celebrations as Killarney – along with Tralee, Kenmare and Listowel – retained gold medal status in this year’s SuperValu National TidyTowns competition. Not only that, but Killarney increased its marks in the contest by a whopping five points this year, notching 328 – just four short of overall winner Birdhill, Co Tipperary, which was named Ireland’s Tidiest Town for 2017 at the awards on Monday. The news brought particular joy to Killarney Looking Good/Killarney Tidy Towns chairwoman Yvonne Quill who for once was unable to attend the award ceremony in Dublin as she is recovering from a knee injury. However the delegation, which included Killar-

ney Municipal Mayor Cllr Niall Kelleher, kept her informed of proceedings during the day. An area in which Killarney gained most, going up by two marks, was in the wildlife and habitat category, noted Johnny McGuire of Killarney Tidy Towns. “This is due to increased participation from the National Parks and Wildlife Service, under area manager Pat Dawson,” he said. “Overall it has been a tremendous result for Killarney. To increase by five marks is a dramatic increase given the level of competition that exists.” Paying tribute to the Killarney Municipal District staff as well as the “army” of volunteers he said: “Everyone has worked on a daily basis going above and beyond the call of duty.” As media sponsor, we congratulate all involved!

Want To Share Memories?

Very Little ‘Winter Homework’ THE Tidy Towns judges were highly complimentary when it came to their report on Killarney. Previous adjudicators’ reports would have a list of recommendations – or what the Killarney Tidy Towns committee regards as “winter homework” – said Johnny McGuire of the committee. “This year we’re delighted that there are very few of these, which allows us time and space to develop the positive aspects of the report for the 2018 Tidy Towns campaign,” he added.

Seventy Ways To Cook A Chicken

Heritage

A FORMER head chef at Killarney House, Jimmy Sugrue returned there at the weekend to recount his memories of the time he spent working with the McShain family. Jimmy said he knew over 70 different ways to cook a chicken and could whip up 100 different types of omelettes and 150 varieties of potatoes. While there he met up with his former colleague, Harry O’Donoghue, caretaker, Killarney House, pictured below.

Jimmy Sugrue, centre, Killarney, was head chef to the McShain family. He is pictured with Pat Dawson, manager, Killarney House and Gardens, Laura Murtagh, project manager, Killarney House Exhibition, Anne O’Leary, Killarney House, and Harry O’Donoghue, former butler to the McShains.

THE floodgates of memory opened at the weekend when Killarney House hosted a “memories collection day” to gather stories, photographs and mementoes. The day was extremely successful, said Killarney House & Gardens manager Pat Dawson. ‘There was significant quality of information and the memories were really superb,” he said. It is hoped to create an oral history surrounding Killarney House and the team there would love to hear from you if you have any memories

you would like to share – particularly relating to John and Mary McShain, their daughter Sister Pauline, Beatrice Grosvenor, and Lord Castlerosse. “I would like to thank all the people who came out on Saturday in spite of the bad weather. We are open from 8.30am to 6pm and get in touch with either myself or any member of staff,” added Pat. You can also phone Pat on 087-2180598 or 064-66 770142 or email pat.dawson@chg. gov.ie

Green Light For Muckross House Plans KERRY COUNTY COUNCIL has granted planning permission to the Department of Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural, and Gaeltacht Affairs for works on Muckross House. The 19th-century Victorian mansion is a protected

structure. The plans for Muckross House involve internal alterations to the basement/lower ground floor level, and changing the use of some of the existing rooms.

It is also proposed to change the contemporary audio-visual room to reinstate the original laundry room, and to change the existing contemporary weavers shop to reinstate the original servants dining hall.

THAT Friday feeling gets better and better thanks to The Chatroom! It’s Killarney’s answer to the Late Late Show so be sure to be sure to tune in this evening at 9pm on our website killarneyadvertiser.ie and Facebook page. This week we hosted Scotts Lakers St Paul’s Killarney stars Mark Greene and Philip O’Connor. After a bit of banter with our very own Kieran Healy, the National League basketball players decided who would ask the first question by means

of a game of rock, paper, scissors. Ahead of their home game tomorrow when they host Cork side Neptune in Killarney Sports Centre at 7.30pm, the duo took a little time out to ponder such universal questions as what they would make compulsory on the office if they were CEO of a company. Make sure to watch the video for that and much more, including which character from Harry Potter they would choose to be, and why.

Mercy Pupils Welcome All-Ireland Minor Champions

HAPPY birthday to the Kerry Cattle Society of Ireland Ltd which celebrated its landmark 100th anniversary at a function in the Killarney Oaks Hotel at the weekend. The society was formed in 1917 to promote and maintain the purity of Ireland’s oldest dairy breed at a special evening at Killarney

WHAT a week of celebration it’s been for the four-in-a-row All-Ireland winning Kerry minor football team. Schools across the greater Killarney were delighted to welcome the Tommy Markham Cup during the week, including Holy Cross Mercy National School. Two of the school’s former pupils, Nelu Do-

herty and Jack Griffin, together with the team captain David Clifford, were delighted to display the cup to the Mercy students and staff. “To say there was excitement would be an understatement!” said a spokesperson. Presidential Salute for Margaret Honour

President Michael D. Higgins congratulates Margaret Scully.

A WOMAN who once thought she was too old to return to learning has been honoured by none other than the President of Ireland. Killarney’s Margaret Scully was a special guest of President Michael D Higgins at Áras an Uachtaráin, and was there to represent Kerry people who have returned to learning to address the literacy skills they missed out on first time round at school. The event coincided with National Literacy Week and the National Adult Literacy Agency’s First Step Campaign. Margaret has been taking classes in reading, writing, math and technology with Kerry Education and Training Board (ETB) over the last seven years. Like many people, her learning journey started when her young boys went to school

and needed help with their homework. “I would make every excuse not to help them because I had nothing to draw from. I got six years of education. I started at 6 and finished at 12. That was my education,” said Margaret. “I was terrified. But I thought,I have to do something. In the long run you have to take that first step and do it for yourself.” Margaret’s newfound confidence led to community roles and she is the South Kerry Coordinator for the Team Hope Project. She has also trained as a NALA Literacy Ambassador. “My motto is to encourage others. It is not like going back to school. There are no teachers. No one will talk down to you.” Call 066-7193900 or go to www.kerryetb. ie for further information.

Recipe For A Successful Open Day FUN was on the menu at Spa GAA Club this weekend. The clubhouse was the venue for a spectacular open day, which included a bake-off. Great Irish Bake Off winner 2014 Tracy Coyne took time out of her busy scheduled to judge the contest, while a whole host of games were lined up on the day.

THIS is our second time bringing TBEX to Ireland. We decided to come back because Ireland is a place everyone wants to travel to and Failte Ireland is one of the best in the world when it comes to working with travel bloggers and other travel influencers.

When TBEX was established

Social media stats

TBEX was founded in 2009 when a travel blogger named Kim emailed six of her friends and asked them to come to her house to talk about travel blogging. Those six friends told a few of their friends and over 100 people showed up. Thus TBEX was born. We purchased TBEX in 2012 and have expanded it to three annual events, one in North America, one in Europe and one in Asia.

TBEX attendees will generate well over one hundred million social media impressions during their stay in Killarney. They will write hundreds of blog posts and videos and post thousands of photos online in the months afterwards.

Benefits of hosting it in Killarney Killarney is a perfect location for TBEX. It is just the right size, with plenty of great pubs, great shopping, and incredibly friendly people to meet and talk with – not to mention the beauty of the area with the lakes, streams, and National Park.

Programme highlights Our opening keynote will feature Dave and Deb from the Planet D, one of the largest and longest-running travel blogs, http://theplanetd.com/. There are educational break out sessions featuring lots of local Irish bloggers and social media experts.

Golden Moments For Hotels

Staff members from The Malton Hotel celebrate. Pic: Sally MacMonagle

REGARDED as the Oscars of the hospitality industry, the 2017 Gold Medal Awards named The Malton as the best four-star hotel in Ireland, while the Spa at the Aghadoe Heights Hotel took home the prize for Ireland’s Five-Star Hotel Spa Experience, and Aidan Moynihan of Hotel Killarney won the Outstanding Service Award. The awards, which were organised in association with Hotel & Catering Review magazine and held at the Lyrath Estate in Kilkenny, are now in their 29th year and are considered the leading independent awards for the Irish hospitality industry. The Malton Killarney is operated under the banner of the Hayfield Family Col-

lection which also includes the five-star Hayfield Manor in Cork and the boutique hotel, Killarney Royal, in Killarney. Extensive renovation work has been completed at The Malton over the past two years since the Scally family acquired the hotel. The timing of this news is especially positive as the owners recently announced their intension to retire The Malton brand in favour of this iconic hotel’s famous historic name, Great Southern Killarney. Ettienne van Vrede, CEO of Hayfield Family Collection, said: “We are absolutely honoured and we are looking forward to the next chapter in the hotel’s great history when we reopen on January 26, 2018 as the Great Southern Killarney.”

Top Award For Outstanding Aidan HUGE congratulations to Aidan Moynihan, general manager of Hotel Killarney, who won the outstanding service award at the 2017 Gold Medal Awards. The Outstanding Service Award recognises “outstanding service and dedication to the hospitality industry” and honours an individual’s exemplary service to his or her working establishment. “The award recognises someone that has had a unique influence on their employees, co-workers and guests, and has a passion for improving quality standards as well as introducing innovation to the service offering,” stated the judges. Aidan received the award from Martin King at the gala event in Lyrath Estate, Kilkenny. He thanked the owners of the hotel, Tifco, the management company and in particular Chris Austin for his support as well the team at Ho-

tel Killarney. “Every day we welcome families to Hotel Killarney, some for the first time. We have also welcomed families with their kids for the last time due to a terminal illness, the ability to know the difference and deal with it is what sets us apart,” said Aidan.

A Weekly Round-Up Of News + Views From Kerry And Around

Hillary ‘Devoted To The Future Of Ireland’ FORMER US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has expressed concern over the political stalemate in Northern Ireland. Ms Clinton said she did not want to see the gains of the peace process and powersharing at Stormont lost. In an interview, due to be aired on the Late Late Show, at her home in Chappaqua, upstate New York, the former US First Lady said: “I am a little worried right now, to be very candid with you. “I am listening to and hearing reports about the loggerheads people find themselves at.

“There has just been so much progress, I don’t want to see it lost.” Ms Clinton also spoke of working with and supporting the late Martin McGuinness and others across the sectarian divide in Northern Ireland when she was First Lady and later when a senator and Secretary of State in the Barack Obama administration. Ms Clinton said both she and her husband Bill remain very committed to helping the peace process succeed. “Both my husband and I are extraordinarily interested in and devoted to the future of the island,” she said.

Solar Alignment At Kerry Megalithic Tomb A HILLWALKER made an illuminating discovery at a megalithic tomb in west Kerry which connects the 4,000-year-old tomb with the equinox. The megalithic tomb, known as the Giant’s Grave, is situated in the valley of Loch an Dúin on the eastern side of the Conor Pass. Ancient rock art can be found within the tomb, including a cup and circle near the head of the tomb. For the past 14 years Daithí Ó Conaill, a retired school principal, has visited the site during the winter and summer solstice hoping to make a connection between the tomb and the sun.

He has now discovered that the wedge tomb is actually aligned to the setting sun of the equinox, which last occurred last Friday. As the sun sets directly into a ‘V’ shaped valley in the distant Brandon mountain range, a shaft of light enters the wedge tomb, illuminating the chamber and the rock art at the head of the tomb. The event can be witnessed at sunset for a number of days either side of the equinox. Archaeologist Míchéal Ó Coiléain who has carried out extensive surveys in Loch an Dúin, said it was a fine example of the engineering brilliance demonstrated by the people who constructed it.

Theresa May Supports Irish Rugby World Cup Bid IT WAS all eyes on London as Ireland, France and South Africa made their final presentations to the World Rugby Council for the right to host the 2023 World Cup. British Prime Minister Theresa May has given her backing to Ireland’s bid

Trump Corner

‘The most dangerous man in the world’ DONALD TRUMP is “dangerously mentally ill”, a group of experts and commentators has claimed. Led by Yale psychiatrist Dr Bandy Lee, 27 writers hold forth in a new book that also claims “his madness is catching”. The Trump presidency, the authors assert, “has created unprecedented mental health consequences across our nation and beyond”. But not all of the 27 are psychiatric or psychological professionals; the roster includes linguist and

media analyst Noam Chomsky, and journalist Gail Sheehy. Psychologist Philip Zimbardo, referring to Mr Trump’s decision to launch an attack on military installations in Syria after the Khan Sheikhoun chemical attack, said: “We believe that Trump is the most dangerous man in the world, a powerful leader of a powerful nation who can order missiles fired at another nation because of his (or a family member’s) personal distress at seeing sad scenes of people having been gassed to death.” Dr Lance Dodes, a psychiatrist formerly of Harvard University, said Mr Trump exhibited “sociopathic qualities” and “a persistent loss of reality”.

Attacks On Cooper Dinner Down To ‘Irish Begrudgery’ KIERAN DONAGHY has defended former teammate Colm Cooper’s testimonial dinner, saying criticism it has attracted is down to “Irish begrudgery”. Cooper is holding a corporate sponsored dinner in Dublin on October 27, with a portion of the proceeds going to the charities, Our Lady’s Hospital in Crumlin and the Kerry Cancer Support Group. He is the first GAA player to embark on such a venture. The dinner has been attacked by RTÉ pundit Joe Brolly, who said it goes against the amateur ethos of the GAA.

Speaking to Colm Parkinson on SportsJOE Live, Cooper’s former inter-county teammate Kieran Donaghy defended the venture and argued that footballers and hurlers who had given long years of service to their county should be entitled to a “kicker” from the association at the end of their careers. “It’s something that’s been done by some of the rugby guys and someone approached him about doing it. It’s going to be great for him,” said Donaghy, adding: “The bit of stick he’s getting is probably a bit of Irish begrudgery really, to be honest.”

The High Court in Belfast was told that the golf club’s insurers will make the payment. The court heard that the teen had just be-

‘Limb’ Found On Beach Is Actually Seal’s Tail Playboy Founder Hugh Hefner Dies Aged 91 PLAYBOY founder Hugh Hefner, who helped usher in the 1960s sexual revolution with his groundbreaking men’s magazine and built a business empire around his libertine lifestyle, died on Wednesday at the age of 91. The magazine posted a photo in black and white of its creator, accompanied by one of his quotes that read: “Life it too short to be living somebody else’s dream.” His son Cooper Hefner, the chief creative officer of Playboy Enterprises, said in a statement

that his father “defined a lifestyle and ethos that lie at the heart of the Playboy brand”. He added: “My father lived an exceptional and impactful life as a media and cultural pioneer and a leading voice behind some of the most significant social and cultural movements of our time in advocating free speech, civil rights and sexual freedom.” Singer and actress Nancy Sinatra paid tribute to him as “one of the nicest men I’ve ever known”, adding: “Godspeed, Hugh Hefner.”

Ryanair

SPECULATION that the remains of a primate were found on an Irish beach was quashed, as an expert revealed the discovery is actually a seal’s flipper. Clare County Council Dog Warden Frankie Coote made the remarkable discovery on a beach in Kilkee, Co Clare.

He told RTÉ Radio One that after gardaí ruled out the possibility of it being a human arm, he was called in to deal with it. But Paolo Viscardi, osteologist at the Natural History Museum, rubbished any suggestions it could be the remains of a primate.

Gardaí’s Harsh But Hilarious Tweet GARDAI just couldn’t resist taking a dig at Kerry’s disappointment in the senior football championship this year with a harsh but hilarious tweet this week! ‘As Slow As It Took The Snail To Get To Jerusalem’

Air Regulator ‘Furious’ Over Axed Flights WE SPOKE of our sympathy with stranded or inconvenienced passengers as a result of the Ryanair chaos last week. Now it has emerged the airline could face legal action from the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) for “persistently misleading passengers” about their rights over cancelled flights. In a letter addressed to the Irish carrier on Wednesday, the CAA warned Ryanair it faced “enforcement action” for failing to give customers accurate information after announcing

almost 700,000 passengers would be affected by flight cancellations over the next six months. “There are clear laws in place, which are intended to assist passengers in the event of a cancellation,” said CAA chief executive Andrew Haines. Yesterday, the airline announced that it was grounding 18,000 flights from its winter schedule affecting up to 400,000 passengers. It has emerged that passengers intending to travel from Dublin will be affected.

NO MATTER what the subject matter, a speech by Danny Healy-Rae can take you literally anywhere in space or time (remember his take on Noah’s Ark supporting his climate change theory last year and more recently his reference to fairy forts?). Describing the housing supply in Kerry, the Independent Kerry TD was as colourful as ever as he told the Dáil this week: “The pace at which we are going at these houses is as slow as it took the snail to get to Jerusalem.” Deputy Healy-Rae informed the Housing Minister Eoghan Murphy he could forget about resettling families from Dublin and other urban areas in Kerry, proclaiming: “We do not have houses for the people we have on our own housing lists. Forget about taking people out of Dublin and bringing them down to Kerry because we do not have houses ready for habitation there yet.

We don’t have enough houses for people on our own housing lists “There are vacant houses but they are a long way from getting them ready or making them fit to put people into them.” Whatever about the subject matter, you have to hand it to the Independent Kerry TD that his way with words enlivens any subject matter.

even how she composes her music. What it will do is make you realise life isn’t all rosy even after you have “made it”. The film has been shot in a format of documentary filmmaking which seeks to add nothing extra and presents the subject as is. It follows Germanotta for a year as she releases her 2016 album Joanne and headlines the halftime show at the 2017 Super Bowl. Director Chris Moukarbel sticks to his chosen format to an obsessive degree as there is no narrator, no interviews and no added information given to the audience. Even Germanotta very rarely speaks to the camera despite it staying on her for the entire film. The film will divide opinions by the mere fact that it is not your classic documentary. If you expect documentaries to be tightly-wound narratives which have a lot of “information”, don’t bother with this one. But if you want a look inside the life of a very successful singer and meet the woman behind the persona, this one certainly fits the bill.

(2014, Comedy) The Muppets prepare to head off on a world tour, unaware that Kermit has been replaced by an evil genius who is his exact double. As the dastardly interloper uses the gang’s performances as cover for an international crime spree, the real Kermit is left languishing in a Russian prison. Comedy, starring Ricky Gervais, Tina Fey and Ty Burrell. Includes lotto.

Ryan Tubridy hosts the entertainment show, featuring a mix of celebrity guests, music, in-depth interviews and discussions on the stories that have the nation talking. Ryan will feature an Irish TV exclusive interview with Hillary Clinton.

IF YOU have a sweet tooth then look no further than the five-star Killarney Park Hotel for the ultimate in treats. The hotel’s pastry chef Dinesh Maurée is fast becoming a celebrity among those with a passion for wonderful desserts and luxury chocolate – think Killarney’s very own answer to Willy Wonka. Dinesh hosted us in the Park Restaurant this week – and to say his creations are divine is an absolute understatement. He has a passion for working with chocolate and adding his own unique twist to bring out its delicious flavour. Because his reputation went before him, we did our best to leave ample room for the delectable dessert tasting plates – even though that is difficult, so tempting is the entire menu there! Not only did we get to enjoy three of his exquisite creations, including home-

made coconut sorbet and pistachio ice cream but afterwards we were presented with a box of luxury handmade petits fours. These pieces of chocolate heaven were seriously impressive and looked way too good to eat. But never fear, in our readers’ interests, we rose to the challenge! Made inhouse by Dinesh, the chocolate tasted as spectacular as it looked. Originally from Mauritius, Dinesh moved to Ireland 11 years ago after working in a number of leading hotels in Mauritius. He has worked in Dublin eateries La Stampa, Shanahan’s on the Green and Ely’s Restaurant. He and his wife Mirela Tkalec then moved from Dublin to Killarney with their children Lara and Ella. Contact the Killarney Park Hotel on 064-66 35555.

Deer Society Warning THE Kerry Deer Society advises people going into the mountains or lowlands to observe deer during the deer rut that it can be dangerous to approach deer at this time of the year.

Stags can be quite aggressive and may attack people and dogs. For your safety stay back from deer and use binoculars. When driving on public roads, drive with care as deer wander.

EMPLOYMENT

RIGHTS Conor Myles and Dan O’Connor,

Partners of Terence F. Casey & Company Solicitors, 99 College Street, Killarney, present information on legal issues All employees working in Ireland have a wide range of rights afforded to them, from statutory breaks, rest periods and annual leave entitlements to the right to have a healthy and safe working environment. These rights are many and varied but the main ones include.

TERMS OF CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT Within two months of commencing, all employees are entitled to receive from their employer a written contract/statement of employment which must detail amongst other items, the date of commencement, place of work, the details of the employer, rate of pay and title and nature of the employment and entitlement of holidays .

PAYMENT OF WAGES All employees are entitled to receive a written statement of their pay on a weekly or monthly basis detailing gross pay and all deductions.

UNFAIR DISMISSALS Usually, but not always, 12 months continuous employment is required before the employee has the bene-

fits of the protections of the Unfair Dismissal legislation. It is open for an employee to bring a claim under the unfair dismissals act where they believe that they have been dismissed without being afforded the rights of natural justice of fair procedures including being made aware of what they are accused of, putting forward their side of the events, and identifying their accuser. An employee who has such a complaint should not delay as the employee has a strict time limit of six months from dismissal to prosecute their claim, otherwise it may become statute barred unless there are adjudged exceptional circumstances.

REDUNDANCY Where the employees job is no longer viable redundancy may be offered by the employer. In order to be entitled to redundancy, the employee must have 2 years or 104 weeks continues service. Again, a claim for redundancy that is not forthcoming must be made within 6 months, so again the employee should never delay.

Welcome

W

ELCOME to this month’s Home & Living. Last Friday while having a coffee with some friends, the conversation came around to what everyone was doing for the weekend. I started to laugh because if anyone told my 18-year-old self, I would be thrilled about getting a skip for the weekend, I would have laughed all the way to Rudy’s! But that was my weekend – sorting through all those things that went into the garage never to be seen again! It was a good lesson. When you are replacing something in your home, let it go don’t store it for five years in the hope you will find a place for it somewhere – generally you don’t, so donate it, sell it, or bin it, but don’t store it! It does feel very cathartic though – the house is next! With winter fast approaching this month we are looking at cosying up your home, a little bit of Hygge and a lot of warmth with some wonderful stoves to get your home toasty for those long winter nights. Our house of the month feature focuses on apartments in Kenmare designed by The White Room. We love all the amazing neutrals, and are all running home to paint our walls white!

Winter Pots

DURING the cold months of January and February, when the setting is bleak and the sky is grey, winter containers can cheer up the soul and add a colourful punch to the landscape. Many gardeners give up on their potted creations in the fall, but that can be a horrible waste because winter is when colour and interest are most vital. What pots to use? Fiberglass, lead, iron, heavy plastic, and stone are the best weather-resistant containers to use. What plants work best? These mainly flower in spring, but cyclamen, winter-flowering pansy, viola, primula and polyanthus will flower intermittently during mild spells in winter. Box plants add all year greenery.

The Word Hygge Is Banded About A Lot Recently But What Does It Really Mean? HYGGE (pronounced hue-guh not hoo-gah) is a Danish word used when acknowledging a feeling or moment, whether alone or with friends, at home or out, ordinary or extraordinary as cosy, charming or special. Hygge doesn’t require learning “how to”, adopting it as a lifestyle or buying anything. It’s not a thing Hygge literally only requires consciousness, the ability to not just be present – but recognize and enjoy the present. Some also refer to hygge as an “art of creating intimacy” (either with yourself, friends and your home). While there’s no one English word to describe hygge, several can be used interchangeably to describe the idea of Hygge such as coziness, charm, happiness, contentment, security, familiarity, comfort, reassurance and kinship. Danes created Hygge because they were trying to survive boredom,

cold, dark and sameness and the indefinable feeling of Hygge was a way for them to find moments to celebrate or acknowledge and to break up the day, months or years. With so many cold, dark, days, the simple act of a candle glowing with a cup of coffee in the morning or a home cooked evening meal with friends can make a huge difference to one’s spirit. They incorporate Hygge into their daily life so it becomes a natural extension rather than a forced and stressful event. For me Hygge is about trying to appreciate the moment I am in. I love to set the table for dinner and light some candles when we have time, not sure if my two boys appreciate the effort, but I do, and that’s what Hygge really is, doing something small that makes you happy, joy in the moment, not a perfect moment Hollywood style but a perfect moment for you.

Flys and Thighs THIS machine exercises and shapes the upper back, abdominals, shoulders, chest and arms, whilst trimming and improving the buttocks, hips, inner and outer thighs. Tummy Crunch EXERCISES completed on this piece of equipment include situps and torso extensions. It gently firms and exercises the abdominal muscles, strengthens the lower back and mobilises the buttocks, legs, knees, hips and waist. Posture Pullover ITS moving pad gently lifts the ribcage helping to improve breathing, whilst the pullover

action firms and strengthens the chest, upper back, upper arms and shoulders, improving posture and upper body mobility. Waist Away THE waist twist motion exercises the abdominals and waistline and adds strength and flexibility to the lower back. Hipster USING a swim kick action, this equipment gently exercises and tones the hips, buttocks, lower back and legs. Bums and Tums THIS machine tones and tightens the buttocks, hips and tummy. A gentle and relaxing vibrating massage works on the upper back, buttocks and feet, helping to detoxify the body and reduce cellulite.

Jaguar

Jaguar’s Electric E-Type

CLASSIC car lovers won’t be forced to get their kicks from static museum pieces after all, with Jaguar’s solution revealed in the form of a pure-electric version of the legendary E-type Roadster. The E-type Concept Zero has been created by Jaguar’s Classic Works division, which is usually

focused on the preservation and recreation of classic models. Preservation has been taken a few steps further with the Concept Zero, by showcasing how classic car ownership may be possible in a world where petrol is harder or impossible to come across. Such a reality is years away, if at all, but lovers of old cars should now be

able to sleep easier. Under the bonnet sits a bespoke 40kWh lithium-ion battery unit which has been designed to fit with near-identical dimensions and weight to the original twincam straight six petrol engine. The battery charge port has even been integrated into the original fuel filler.

Keeping the electric unit to the same dimensions as the petrol unit has simplified the conversion process and has allowed the retention of the original-spec E-type suspension and brakes. All changes have been carefully designed to be completely reversible, in case someone ever wants to replace its original straight six and four-speed manual drivetrain. The integrity of the original car has been preserved.

NOVENA TO THE HOLY SPIRIT

Four Grands Prix In Five Weeks

O Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal. You gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances of my life you are with me. I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things you have given me as you confirm once again that I never wanted to be separated from you in spite of all material illusions. I wish to be with you in Eternal Glory. Thank you for mercy towards me and mine. This prayer must be said for three days, after three days the favour will be granted. D.G

MIRACLE PRAYER

GET set for F1 2017 to go into overdrive with four Grands Prix in the space of the next five weekends. It’s a month that could go a long way to deciding the destiny of the 2017 world titles as the F1 circus travels east for the Malaysia and Japanese grand prix and then, after a brief pit-stop back in Europe, travel west for the races in the USA and Mexico. Lewis Hamilton holds a 28-point title lead over Sebastian Vettel going into this weekend’s grand prix in Malay-

Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked You for many favours. This time I ask you this very special one (mention favour). Take it, dear Heart of Jesus and place it within Your own Heart where Your Father sees it. Then, in His merciful eyes it will become Your favour not mine. Amen. Say for three days, promise publication and favour will be granted. M.B.

THANKSGIVING For favours received from St. Claire, St. Theresa, St. Patrick, Infant Child of Prague, St. Gerard, St. Anthony, St. Joseph, Sacred Heart of Jesus, St. Martin, St. Jude, St. Francis, St. Perigrine, St. Beuelwanda, John Paul, St. Bridget, Holy Spirit, Precious Mother of Jesus, Padre Pio, Blessed Virgin Mary, all the Angels and Saints and all the Holy Souls. LEON.

sia but the season-long Mercedes v Ferrari battle remains tight and delicately poised with six rounds to go. There is a clear advantage to Hamilton but Vettel will have the bit between his teeth with much to prove after he misread the start of the Singapore grand prix resulting in a dramatic accident that left him with no points haul from a race that he was clear favourite. All is happening behind the scenes: Renault and Red Bull have parted company for 2019. Red Bull have an-

nounced Aston Marin as a title sponsor for next year. McLaren has divorced Honda for 2018. McLaren and Toro Rosso have done an engine for 2018. Carlos Sainz has joined Renault as part of that deal. Fernando Alonso has yet to announce where he will be in 2018 but staying at McLaren is his only viable option which may not be a bad one given that the Renault engine that he will have next year is currently third in this year’s championship. Next season is shaping up nicely.

THANKSGIVING God of my life I welcome this new day, It’s Your gift to me, a new creation, a promise of resurrection. I thank You for the grace of being alive this morning, I thank You for the sleep that has refreshed me, I thank You for the chance to make a new beginning this day Lord is full of promise and opportunity, let me waste none of it, this day is full of mystery and the unknown, help me to face it without fear or anxiety. This day is blessed with beauty and adventure make me be fully alive to it all. During this day keep me thoughful, prayerful and kind, may I be courteous and helpful to others and not turned in, in myself, keep me from anyword or deed that would hurt, destroy or belittle and may the thoughts in my mind be pleasing in Your sight. When night comes again may I look back on this day with no grievance or bitterness in my heart and may no one be unhapy because of anything I have done or failed to do. Lord, bless this day for me and for everyone, make it a day in which we grow to have the mind of Christ your son, Lord Jesus Christ, friend and brother may we know You more clearly and love You more day by day. Amen.

Life Through The Lens Of The Gospels

Who Doesn’t Like A Free Gift?

WHAT am I talking about? Division = multiplication! Don’t worry – this column has not suddenly been hijacked by a maths guru! October and November are excellent months to divide clumps of hardy perennials, so creating many more (free!) plants for yourself. I am often asked how you go about dividing plants, so here is a short guide: First of all, what plants will be suitable? In general all plants which have multiple stems coming up from the ground, such as ornamental grasses, agapanthus, helianthus, Lily of the Valley, Rudbeckia, anemones, primulas and hostas. In my experience outdoor geraniums and Dieramas, (angel’s fishing rods), will take a knock when divided, but they do survive. Woody plants, or those which grow on a single stem, are not suitable, however suckering plants, such as Rosa rugose, Sarcococca or Rhus are suitable. How to go about it? First of all, dig up the clump you are dividing. Generally, if you maintain a half-foot of distance outwards from the foliage you will not damage too many valuable roots. Rinse the roots under water, to clean them off. This makes it easier to see what you are doing. Taking two forks, place them back to back and leverage the clump apart. Depending on the size of the plant, you may be able to do this on a table using two small trowels or forks. Alternatively, use a clean, disinfected and sharp knife for dividing. Trim off any rotten or diseased parts of the plant, and give it a general tidy. The resulting clumps can then be transplanted, or, if you prefer they can be potted on into individual pots until spring. Some plants grow from rhiziomes, such as Iris and Bergenia, while others grow from tubers, such as Dahlias. These are also suitable for division, but is not as easy as plants which have fibrous roots. Again, dig up the clump, and rinse off. Now, using a sharp, clean blade, cut the rhizomes onto two to four-inch pieces, making sure there is a growth bud on each piece. Tubers can also be cut in this way. Depending on the type of plant the pieces can be cut smaller. Make sure to cut off diseased pieces. Plant your new pieces about half as deep as they are long, so, a rhizome which is two inches long should be planted horizontally, with the bud facing upwards, about one inch deep. Suckering shrubs such as those mentioned earlier, grow from stolons, which are underground stems. These are better lifted in the spring when growth is active. Loosen the soil around the sucker, taking care not to damage the roots. Sever from the parent plant using a sharp secateurs, and plant on either into a wellprepared site, or a pot of compost. Scotts Lakers v Neptune: Five Things To Watch Out For The Lakers host Cork kingpins Neptune on Saturday and there’s plenty to keep an eye on, writes Adam Moynihan 1. Can the Lakers keep the momentum going? It has been the perfect start to the season for the Scotts Lakers who followed up their dramatic opening night win over the Dublin Lions with an emphatic comeback victory against LIT last weekend. The Lakers will be hoping to continue their unbeaten run with another win on home court. 2. A home debut for Antuan Bootle Having missed the first game through injury, 6’8” forward Antuan Bootle played five minutes in Limerick and is expected to feature heavily against Neptune on Saturday night. Local stars Andrew Fitzgerald and Pádraig Lucey have undoubtedly done well in his absence but Lakers coach Vojkan Bencic will be hoping that Houston native Bootle will be able to come in and make his sizeable presence felt at both ends of the floor. 3. How will the Lakers line out? League rules stipulate that teams can only have one American on the floor at any one time so the Lakers will have to rotate Bootle with Justin Tuason, who has been their top scorer in both of the first two games. Tuason, originally from the Bay Area, has been electric thus far but Bootle’s return could potentially mean fewer minutes for him going forward, while either Lucey or Fitzgerald (if not both) are also likely to feature less prominently.

Fans are certain to turn out in great numbers to see Killarney’s new favourite team in action

It will probably take Coach Bencic a few games before he gets an idea of his most effective rotation. 4. Neptune will surely provide the biggest test yet Historically one of the most successful sides in Irish basketball, Neptune of Cork will also be hoping to maintain their perfect start to the season when they come to town on Saturday evening. So far they have comfortably defeated IT Carlow (99-61), LYIT Donegal (113-80) and Sligo (8952) – that’s an average winning margin of 36 points - and they will undoubtedly expect to come to Killarney and turn over the league’s newest team. The reigning President’s Cup champions have a squad stacked with talent including one player who’ll be no stranger to local basketball fans: veteran Ger Noonan lined out for St Paul’s with great distinction back when the club last played at this level. 5. Another sell-out expected at The Auracle. After a shaky start, the home support really found their voice by the end of the Dublin Lions game and the Lakers will be hoping for more of the same on Saturday. There’s a fantastic buzz around the club at the moment and fans are certain to turn out in great numbers to see Killarney’s new favourite team in action. Neptune are bound to be very tricky opponents but, with a boisterous home crowd behind them, the Lakers will be gunning for an upset.

Basketball Division One Limerick Celtics 93 Scotts Lakers 105 DESPITE trailing by a whopping 22 points at one stage, Scotts Lakers bounced back in magnificent fashion to defeat Limerick Celtics in a thrilling clash at the Limerick IT SportsHub on Saturday night. A powerful second-half performance brought the Killarney side back from the dead to snatch a victory that looked highly unlikely for long periods in this match. Limerick Celtics started this match in convincing fashion and with American Matt St Amour on fire from three-point range, the home side led 32-19 at the end of the first quarter. With St Amour continuing to punish the Lakers, the home side opened up a 22-point advantage and the match appeared to be well beyond the reach of Scotts Lakers. St Amour sank his seventh three-pointer of the half on the buzzer to give Limerick a 55-38 lead at the half-time interval. Problems continued for Scotts Lakers early in the third quarter when Mihail Kapitanov was disqualified for two unsportsmanlike fouls. TheLakers trailed 70-55 midway through the third quarter but they gradually narrowed the deficit with outstanding play from Justin Tuason, Mark Greene, Andrew Fitzgerald, Padraig Lucey and Con O’Mahony and the gap was cut to 74-68 entering the final quarter. It was very closely contested after this and Limerick led 88-86 with five minutes remaining. Veteran Keith O’Grady announced his introduction to the court with a massive three-pointer to give Scotts Lakers a narrow one-point lead and they never looked back after. O’Grady sank another big three-pointer shortly after and Lakers led 94-89 with three minutes remaining. Despite being on four fouls, Mark Greene really stepped it up with an outstanding performance hitting 21 second half points while the home side also struggled to contain the free scoring Justin Tuason. A return of 67 points in the second half for Scotts Lakers was very pleasing for Coach Vojkan Bencic and his squad. Scotts were without injured captain Philip O’Connor and it was also a great result considering that American Antuan Bootle only played for short periods as he makes his return from injury. The outstanding Matt St Amour led all scorers with an amazing 53 points for Limerick Celtics followed by Emmet Browne 13 and Krystian Burchardt 12. However Scotts Lakers had six players on double-scoring figures led by Justin Tuason 25, Mark Greene 24, Andrew Fitzgerald 15, Padraig Lucey 13, Con O’Mahony 12, Mihail Kapitanov 10 and Keith O’Grady 6.

Rugby News ... Words: Liam Murphy ANOTHER win on the road for Munster as they secured their third win from three games since the start of the new format PRO14 last Saturday. The Red army took the trip to Swansea to take on Welsh outfit the Ospreys at the Liberty Stadium. Having beaten the Ospreys three times last season, the odds were always going to favour the Irishmen. The home side were first on the scoresheet with a well worked try by James Hook, however nice tries by Jean Kleyn and

Darren Sweetnam gave the visitors the lead at half time. Tyler Bleyendaal had a mixed day from the boot but added the rest of the points as the Irish Province ran out 16-21 winners in the end to remain top of the conference. Tonight Munster are away to Glasgow Warriors at the Scotstoun Stadium and the lads will be looking to continue the goo run to date. Leinster travelled to South Africa to take on the Southern Kings at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth. The match itself didn’t live up the drama of the visa fiasco during the week which saw Kiwis Isa Nacewa and Jamison GibsonPark sent home because of an administration error at Leinster. Guy Easterby, head of Leinster Business Operations

admitted that lessons were learned. Even though the two players were sent home, the visitors won 31 points to 10. Meanwhile Ulster beat the Scarlets and Connacht were the only province to lose at the weekend. A mixed weekend for the Irish teams. Closer to home the Munster Junior League kicks off this Sunday with Killarney RFC taking on rivals Castleisland in the first round of Division 2 of the Munster Junior leagues. A cracker is in store as Killarney aim to drive on from last years hugely successful season. So, if you want to catch a top quality rugby match, you don’t need to travel to Scotland, this local derby will be a cracking match. All welcome to Aghadoe, this Sunday at 2.30pm.

Crokes Advance Football

Adam Moynihan gives his verdict on last weekend’s Championship action

Dr Crokes booked their place in the last four of this year’s County Championship with a fairly comfortable 0-17 to 0-12 win over Kenmare Shamrocks in the Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday. Kenmare managed to force extra time when the sides met in the Club Championship final a few weeks back but Crokes were more dominant this time out, youngster Micheál Burns leading the way with four well-taken points from play. The victory has set up a semi-final date with West Kerry who defeated Austin Stacks on Saturday with six points to spare. With a team made up predominantly of players from An Ghaeltacht (12 of the starting 15 last weekend), West Kerry have recovered well from their opening round defeat to Feale Rangers by beating St Kieran’s, Legion and now Stacks to reach the last four.

East Kerry only managed 1-3 from play in the first half and fared even worse in the second, two David Clifford frees their only scores of the period Five points (two frees) from Seán Micheál Ó Conchúir and 1-1 from Éanna ó Conchúir helped them to a 1-17 to 0-14 victory over the Stacks who have certainly had a year to forget. Crokes and West Kerry last met in the first round of the 2016 Championship when 2-7 from Tony Brosnan helped the Killarney side to a 22-point win. Elsewhere, South Kerry secured their passage to the semis with a 0-15 to 0-12 win over Rathmore. Rathmore started the brighter but were dealt a significant blow when corner forward John Moynihan was forced off through injury early on. The teams were level at the break but South Kerry really pushed on in the second half, Robert

Paul Murphy, Rathmore, under pressure from Paul O’Sullivan, South Kerry, and below, Micheal Burns, Dr Crokes. Pics: Eamonn Keogh

Wharton, Brendan O’Sullivan and Daniel Daly in particular impressing. Their opponents in the last four will be Kerins O’Rahilly’s who hammered East Kerry on Saturday in a surprisingly one-sided affair. It was expected to be the Battle of the Forwards in Austin Stack Park but, in truth, East Kerry never really got going. They only managed 1-3 from play in the first half (1-4 total) and fared even worse in the second, two David Clifford frees their only scores of the period. Clifford showed well but struggled to make a real impact in his first senior County Championship start, although it’s difficult to judge his performance when East Kerry as a team were so poor. The minor star cut a frustrated figure towards the end of the game and he was booked for retaliating following a cynical foul by Danny O’Sullivan. Rahilly’s, meanwhile, amassed 3-12 - an impressive enough tally considering the conditions - and could have scored a lot more. Barry John Keane got 0-6 (four frees) while Tommy Walsh, David Moran and Gavin O’Brien kicked 1-1 apiece. It’s still difficult to look beyond the Crokes for this year’s Championship although West Kerry are a good, young team and should provide Pat O’Shea’s men with a stern test in the semi-final.

In the other side of the draw, South Kerry will be hoping to avenge their opening round defeat to Kerins O’Rahilly’s but they’ll have to be at their best defensively to deal with the likes of Jack Savage, Tommy Walsh and Barry John Keane. Both semis will take place on Saturday, October 7, in the Fitzgerald Stadium.

Jimmy Magee RIP

Sport

– The Memory Man

Words: Eamonn Fitzgerald

IT IS hard to believe that he has gone to his eternal reward. He was so full of life which belied his 82 years. We thought he would go on forever. I first met Jimmy Magee in the Fitzgerald Stadium in the mid-80s, where recently retired Kerry players lined out against the Jimmy Magee All Stars. These All Stars came from the world of showbusiness. Such household names from the showband era as Brendan Bowyer, Dermot O’Brien, Butch Moore, Dickie Rock and Father Brian D’Arcy traded the stage for the football field and lined out for Jimmy Magee in venues all over Ireland. After the match they went to the local dance hall providing entertainment on their night off from the ballroom. In this way the match and the subsequent music raised a very considerable amount of money for charity where no one was paid any fee. I met him many times in the intervening years and was always glad to meet him to enjoy his infectious good humour and that roguery with the twinkle in his eyes.

JOHN TREACY His interest was sport in so many codes and he loved to have the freedom to capture those seminal points of so many great sporting occasions. His description of John Treacy coming down the last few hundred metres in the Los Angeles Olympics was and continues to be the icon that perpetuates that very special moment in world athletics. He was so delighted to praise the great Irish women in sport, Katie Taylor, Sonia O’Sullivan and Michelle Smith. Despite all the controversy involving Michelle Smith’s doping allegation he backed her to the hilt. He was an expert on such a wide variety of sport and his recall was legendary. Tony O’Donoghue, his colleague in RTÉ Sport, summed him up well: “In the days before Google and Wikipedia Jimmy Magee was the Internet.”

OUR LAST MEETING Little did I think that the last time I met him in Croke Park that it would be our last meeting. He

spanned six decades of sport and brought his own charm to the events he was covering and to think that the seeds were sown in Willie Lowe’s garden in County Louth. He told me that was where it all started for him. He was born in New York but moved to Ireland when he was very young. He recalled the soccer games he played with his friends in Willie Lowe’s back garden. Using the handle of a brush for a microphone he learned the rudiments of giving a live commentary. Then he pestered Radio Éireann with pleas to give him a job as a sports broadcaster. He had plenty refusals but he persisted and eventually they relented and gave him a job. He never looked back and spent 60 years broadcasting on boxing, his favourite sport, cycling and the annual Tour De France, world Cups and so many Olympic games,

PAUL, RIP The premature death of his son Paul to Motor Neurone Disease hit him hard. He was a talented soccer player with several clubs including Shamrock Rovers and was also a broadcaster; He also told me he missed his wife Marie, who died

in 1989. This caused a great void in his life. His resilience kept him going. Like his hero the great Maradona, Jimmy was a different class, a class apart. It was an honour to have known him. Duine faoi leith ab ea Jimmy. Go gcutítear a shaothar leis.

RUGBY WORLD CUP FOR KILLARNEY IN 2023? It is getting close now as Ireland make their bid to stage the 2023 Rugby World Cup. They made their case on Monday last. On October 31 the Rugby World Cup Limited will publish its recommendation and then on November 15 the vote of the Rugby Council will be announced. If it comes to Ireland Killarney will be one of the options outside of Dublin, Limerick, Cork and Belfast. Killarney has the infrastructure to cater for big crowds. If it comes to Killarney there will be significant development necessary in the Fitzgerald Stadium.

COLM COOPER Gooch – The Autobiography of Colm Cooper will be launched in The Gleneagle Hotel on Thursday, October 5, at 6.30pm. Michael Lyster will be the MC.

Deerpark Pitch & Putt Club

Club Matchplay: An intriguing conclusion to the Club Matchplay (sponsored by Murphy’s Bar) last weekend as firstly the Semi-Finals brought wins for Gearóid Cronin over John McGrath (2&1) and Brian Moloney over Kieran Fitzpatrick (5&3) to set up a Final on Sunday morning between Gearóid and Brian. Gearóid looked to be in control coming down the stretch leading 4up with five to play but Brian reduced the deficit to 1up with only two to play. Gearóid got the halves he needed however to hold on for a 1up win as he won his second Matchplay title to go with his first success back in 2006. Well done to both players on a hardfought match as the prizes will be presented in Murphy’s Bar at our traditional pre-Christmas get-together. Crusaders Bridge Club an Appreciation

We recently lost a much loved and treasured member of our Club, our loyal and dignified Marjorie. Marj served in many positions in the Crusaders Bridge Club and was a mainstay of the Annual Torc Bridge Congress over the years. Marjorie loved the Game of Bridge. She and her friend and partner for many years Evelyn O’Leary were a formidable pair at any table.!!! Marj was known by all for her calm disposition, efficiency and infectious smile. She

On The Ball Dr Crokes Club COUNTYSENIOR FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP - QUARTER FINAL: Dr Crokes 0-17 Kenmare Shamrocks 0-12. This game was very close for fifty minutes. We went in at the interval one point ahead0-7 to 0-6. We were finding it difficult to break through a well-organized Kenmare defence in the first half. Even though we had a good third quarter, scoring four points to our opponents one we still could not get into a match winning lead. Indeed, at the start of the final fifteen minutes the visitors outscored us three points to one to leave just two points between the teams as we entered the last ten minutes. Our best period of the game was in the crucial last ten minutes of the match. We outscored our opponents by five points to two. The first of these from Michael Burns (He was our top scorer getting four points from play), two great minors from Colm Cooper and the last two of the game from Daithi Casey and Tony Brosnan. We were very happy to have got over the line by five points. Kenmare Shamrocks are a formidable team and had wins in Championship games during the year over top teams like Kerins O’Rahillys and Killarney Legion. We had to be better in all quarters of the filed from our contest with our same opponents in the Club Championship Final. This we achieved to qualify for the Semi Final on Saturday 7th of October. LOTTO: Lotto 4, 8, 10, 16. Jackpot €3300 Winner Paul Langston Kaynes Bar. Next Draw Sunday 1st of October Jackpot €3000.

Fossa

East Kerry U12 Girls Division 1 Shield Final: Fossa 3-8 v Miltown/Listry 3-6 Last Tuesday evening saw Fossa come out on top in a tight game in the East Kerry Division 1 shield final. Miltown/Listry started the game brightly but Fossa began to get on top as the 1st half went on and goals by Katie O Driscoll, Ava O’Neill and Elizabeth Coffey saw Fossa leading at half time on a scoreline of 3-3 to 2-4. The second half was very cagey with Fossa scoring 5 points to Miltown/ Listry’s 2 points which saw Fossa leading by 5 heading into the last few minutes. The visitors got a goal to make for a very tense finale but Fossa defended the last few set pieces and held on for a well-deserved 2-point win. Well done also to our U14 girls who had a good win in their East Kerry League final against Laune Rangers. U14 East Kerry Championship 1st Rd: Fossa 3-9 Dr. Crokes 3-14

Killarney Legion GAA

LEGION U16 GIRLS: The U16 girls picked up their 2nd title of the year with a late surge to deny Laune Rangers a win in this East Kerry Division 2 Final. It all looked so different at half time as Laune Rangers put in a strong first half show yielding 2 goals and some fine point kicking giving them a comfortable half time cushion. Legion however kept plugging away and managed the second half much better limiting Laune Rangers to just 2 points while also keeping the scoreboard ticking over. That said with the game entering the

last minute we still trailed 2-6 to 0-10. Step forward Clodagh Sheehan who danced past her marker to send an unstoppable shot to the roof of the net. Ciara Randles, who had quite a tussle with the Laune Rangers centre back throughout added the insurance point with the final score reading 2-6 to 1-10. Joy for the Legion but tough luck on a game Killorglin outfit. Kate Mc Carthy, Legion captain, accepted the shield from a delighted East Kerry Ladies Board Chairman Dave Randles. Great credit is also due to Mike Doody and his management team of Paudie Breen, Shaun O Connor, Orla Culloty, Maria Hanrahan and Catherine Lyne who put in a huge effort themselves this year with the girls. Always nice to have hard work rewarded. U14 BOYS: Kilcummin were the visitors to Direen for this clash of East Kerry League Champions 1 and 2. In a tight first half we held the advantage by 8 points to 3. The second half opened up as William Shine and Ethan O Neill struck for majors and despite a late Kilcummin revival the hard work was done as the lads ran our winners on a 2-17 to 3-9 scoreline. We now meet the winners of the Firies vs Cokes semifinal in the Division 1 Championship Final as the hard work put in by both management and panel continues to yield progress. A tough decider is in prospect so the lads will have to be on their mettle in the season’s finale. LOTTO: Sunday September 24th, Numbers were 9,16,26,28. No winner. Next week’s Jackpot €15,100. Next draw on Sunday October 1st in Murphy’s Bar.

smalltalk

Top Killarney golfer Simon Gallivan talks to Adam Moynihan about his clubmates, the future of local golf and playing with Rory McIlroy Well Simon. How is your game at the moment? What are you playing off? The local guys will tell you “not very good” after my performance in Portugal last week. My current handicap is 1. Are you hoping to get down to scratch? Well, the golf season is kind of coming to a close but hopefully I’ll get it back to scratch or maybe +1 by next year. How has 2017 been going for Killarney in terms of competitions? Really good. The ladies won the Irish Senior Cup Championship for the first time this year which is an incredible achievement. They have an excellent team. Our men’s team lost out to the eventual provincial winners as well. How would you assess the current state of the game locally? Excellent. Killarney really focuses on young players so there are some good golfers coming through, and we obviously have a really strong ladies team too. Are there any young Killarney golfers with the potential to go pro? We have the best young players in the country on the ladies side. Mairead Martin and Valerie Clancy are Irish internationals, and Luke Walsh from Castleisland is probably the best of the boys at the moment. He plays in Killarney and has been selected to play for Munster. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? “The more I practice the luckier I get.” Who’s the best golfer you’ve ever played with? Rory McIlroy.

Rory Oh yeah. He’s good at golf, isn’t he? I would say the most talented golfer in history, in my opinion. You played together when you were younger? Absolutely. He was obviously a tremendous talent and has done excellent things in the game. Who was your toughest-ever opponent? Seánie Kelliher from Spa. Trying to give Seánie nine or ten shots and take a tenner off him is almost impossible. Who’s the biggest moaner you’ve ever played with? Mark Tuite. Definitely. That’s T-U-I-T-E.

Who’s the worst-dressed? Kevin O’Callaghan aka ‘Unbelievable Clothes’. He won’t like that… Who spends the most time at the range? I would probably say David O’Donoghue. He spends a lot of time at the range. Excellent player. He has improved immensely this year. Who’s the biggest bandit in town? Conor ‘Doody’ Healy. Who’s the slowest player? I’ll be diplomatic and say myself for this one. There are quite a few others but I won’t mention their names. What are your three favourite courses to play? Killeen in Killarney definitely has to be there - it’s an awesome place - Ballybunion Old, and St Andrew’s Old. Ballybunion and St Andrew’s I would rate as arguably the best courses in the world. What was St Andrew’s like? It was brilliant. As you see on TV, it’s quite an expansive, open course. There are a lot of pot bunkers, there’s great history there and the course is in very good shape. Anyone who’s into golf really needs to try and play there at least once. What’s your proudest sporting moment? Representing Ireland in Canada in the two-man Irish boys team. That was in 2004 I think. And the most embarrassing? Losing a fiver to Lorcan Daly. It has happened once only and will never happen again. If you had to compare yourself to a professional golfer, who would it be? I’d imagine Jason Day. Long and wild off the tee. I was going to say John Daly but I couldn’t insult myself that much. Who would be in your dream four-ball scramble? Donald Trump, Kim Jong-un and Hillary Clinton. They say the golf course is the best place to do business so I think we could solve the world’s problems. If you could go for a drink with any three sportspeople, living or dead, who would they be? Tiger Woods, Conor McGregor and Mike Tyson. What are your five favourite sports in order? Golf, soccer, boxing, football and MMA. Most of those to watch rather than play. Is there another sport you haven’t tried that you think you’d be good at? Baseball maybe… I was on the Irish squash team so my hand-eye coordination should be decent. What’s the best sporting moment of all time? Tough question. I’ll give you two if you don’t mind. That’s fine, man. Manchester United beating Bayern Munich in 1999 and Tiger Woods winning four majors in a row between 2000 and 2001. Do you have any nicknames? I’ll leave that one to you but I don’t think so…

Advertising Simon Gallivan

I don’t think there are any that I’d say to your face. Do you have any superstitions? I don’t. I thought golfers were notoriously superstitious? I don’t really have anything besides a pre-shot routine. Is there an app on your phone you couldn’t live without? The shortcut to GMHD.ie. Get a car insurance quote in under 60 seconds. That’s the first time anyone has tried to plugged something in one of these interviews. I’ll allow it because we’re friends! What’s your most-used emoji?

What’s your favourite song right now? Pretty Young Thing by John Gibbons. What would you sing at karaoke? No one wants to hear me sing. I tend not to. I’m the guy that asks people to sing to deflect the attention. Who’s the most famous person in your phone? Gavin O’Leary. That dope. He’s a prominent local celebrity, as seen from every single local celebrity gig that goes on. Who would play you in a movie about your life? I had a good think about this one. I’d probably have to go with the guy who plays The Mountain in Game of Thrones. I think you mean the guy who plays Tyrion Lannister? And last one… Can you tell me a joke? Yeah I’ve a good one. I’ll be the judge of that. I told my girlfriend she drew her eyebrows too high. Yeah? She seemed surprised. That is a good one. Thanks Simon! No bother, Ad.
