Mixed reaction after refusal of Port Road development

SURVEY

“I have warned before that An Bórd Pleanála is not fit for purpose and I am now calling on the Minister for Justice and the Minister for Housing to disband An Bórd Pleanála immediately and re view this decision on behalf of the people of Kerry and ensure fair play for all. This housing crisis will never be solved if we are to be ruled by people who do not un derstand the needs of their fellow human Beforebeings.”the issue was referred to An Bórd Pleanála residents of the Port Road area were opposed to the development. They believe that a project of this size is not suitable for many reasons. They say that the development is oversized and out of character with the area, that the proposed pedestrian access to Millwood Estate would create a security risk for existing residents, that the already con gested Port Road will face further con gestion from new traffic, and a number of single-storey dwellings in Millwood will be faced with large two storey dwellings overlooking them, leading to a loss of Theprivacy.development also caused anger at the May meeting of the Killarney Munic ipal District meeting.

Residents living in the Port Road area believe that An Bórd Pleanála’s decision to refuse planning permission for a large scale development in the area is a “smokescreen” and is “an easy avenue for the developer to appeal”.

At that time Kerry County Council rec ommended that planning permission be granted for the controversial develop ment on Port Road despite widespread objections from elected councillors.

Portal Asset Holdings want to build 228 residential units consisting of 76 houses and 152 apartments, crèche and all asso ciated site works between Port Road and St Margaret’s Road. The project has not been widely wel comed by residents or elected members of Killarney Municipal District despite a chronic housing shortage in the town. Last week, An Bórd Pleanála refused planning permission for the development as it felt that construction works would interfere with a colony of Lesser Horse shoe Bats in the area. However, a survey conducted by the Kil larney Advertiser found that the majority of Killarney people are in favour of the development and that the needs of the people should take precedence over the well-being of bats.

The lack of available housing is a huge is sue in Killarney, two years ago the town was declared a Rent Pressure Zone and earlier this year Kerry County Council clamped down on operators of short term rental properties aimed at tourists in an effort to free up units for residents and workers. “I am totally at a loss to understand the thinking behind this latest outrageous decision by An Bord Pleanála. We are in the middle of a massive housing crisis. Kil larney is a Rent Pressure Zone and Kerry as a whole is crying out for more hous ing,” Kerry County Councillor Michael Ca hill told the Killarney Advertiser.

OBJECTIONS

As a follow up the Killarney Advertiser surveyed readers and asked: “Do you agree with An Bórd Pleanála refusing planning permission for 228 units off Park Road?”

“The proposed development provides a mix of housing sizes and types to fa cilitate a wide demographic of housing need, but in particular provides an in creased number of small units which typ ifies housing demand in Killarney and the surrounding area,” stated the report. “It is recommended that permission be grant ed for the proposed development.”

PROPOSED BUILDING: This image is part of the proposed building which was refused planning by An Bord Pleanála.

Residents of the Millwood area made 50 different complaints to An Bórd Pleanála after previously raising concerns in April of this year when the planning applica tion was first lodged. Some issues included a folly stream that will drain directly from the new devel opment into the Lakes of Killarney, ad ditional traffic congestion in an already heavily congested area, poor flood risk assessment and concerns over tamper ing with the highly invasive Japanese Theyknotweed.saytheir concerns were completely overlooked and that the decision to re fuse planning will be easily overturned in an “Thisappeal.[the bats] is a smoke screen, the reason for refusal is very weak and pro vides an easy avenue for the developer to appeal. They will only have to argue one reason to push through the development as opposed to addressing the inaccura cies in the application and fundamental issues that are long-standing in Killarney like traffic on Port Road and protecting the National Park,” said a statement by Millwood Residents Association issued to the Killarney Advertiser. “As residents, there are other valid factors that should be addressed or dealt with in more detail in the 109 page inspector’s report. They merely gave tokenism to the concerns of the people who live ad jacent to the site and the community at large who know the area, a better onsite assessment should be undertaken and engagement with the park people.”

Senior planner Damien Ginty gave a pres entation on various issues and concerns connected with the application.

The 30-page report outlined the pros and cons on why the development should or should not go ahead.

A total of 75.41 percent of respondents disagreed with the decision while the remaining 24.51 percent backed the de Lastcision.week’s news story attracted a lot of attention on the Killarney Advertiser’s so cial media channels. “I have a relatively new build in Glenflesk, the bats come out at night, swoop and dive around the house, having a field day. No doubt with the insects drawn by the light, they don’t bother me, I don’t both er them, we coexist just fine,” said one commentator. “You’d hardly know the bats are there. They’ll have to go back to the drawing board, the proposed devel opment should have been vastly reduced in size because of infrastructural reasons anyway.”

Mr Ginty’s report was met with anger from all seven elected councillors. They were unanimous in their calls that such a large development should not go ahead in the area. And while they all admitted that Killar ney urgently needs more houses they felt that there were too many local issues to allow this particular development go ahead in its current format.

Tourism Industry bosses in Killarney remain upbeat despite a recent Fáilte Ireland survey saying that tourist spending in Kerry for last year had dropped by 46% compared to 2019 figures. After winning the national title in Dublin earlier this year Jamesie qualified for the Schoolboys and Schoolgirls European championships which were held between August 14 and 21. In his first preliminary fight he beat Romania’s Raul Benea Antonio 5-0. He repeated this performance in the quarter finals defeating Moldova’s Chirill Slepoi by the same score-line, after which he progressed to the semi-final stages. He defeated Azerbaijan’s Baghir Alimkhanli when the referee stopped the contest after three rounds. In the final he faced Scotland’s Jacob Naismith in a very close fight with the judges eventually awarding the gold medal to the Scot on a 3:2 split decision. “There was only a one-point difference on the judges’ score cards that decided the winner. It was a coin on its edge and could have went either way,” his father James told the Killarney Advertiser. “It was a remarkable experience for Jamesie to represent Ireland and it is a fantastic achievement to win silver on an exceptionally close decision at the highest ranked competition available to his age category. His performances were exceptional throughout the entire tournament.”

One of the most obvious ways to reduce overcrowding at Dublin Airport is to increase the number of flights to and from regional airports. A month ago, we shared the story of Bucky, a 9-month-old puppy who was looking for a new family. His Ukrainian owner, 15-year-old Herman, could not keep the dog in the hotel, so unfortunately the friends had to part. If Bucky hadn't found a foster family, the dog would have had to be euthanised. There was not enough time to find a new family for the dog... but we have good news for you. Liliya Piotrovska, from County Cork, found out about the puppy from a friend who forwarded her a message about Bucky on social “Imedia.had two dogs, but one of the Staffordshire bull terriers died six months ago. When I saw Bucky, I immediately understood that this is exactly my dog," Liliya said. So very soon Bucky moved to a private house with a large garden and loving owners near Cork. Liliya and her husband accepted the dog as a new family member. Bucky even has a friend, Sarah, an 8-year-old dog who also lives in the Ithouse.took less than a month for the dogs to start playing and sleeping together. Liliya says that Bucky is very smart and patient. In a few minutes, the new owner taught Bucky to follow simple commands - give a paw, sit and lie down. Now the dog is waiting for training and assimilation of new commands.

He went to the Cheltenham Festival each year and to many of the local meetings, where everyone knew him. "Due to his illness, he couldn't go to Cheltenham in 2020 and ahead of it, on February 26, he got really sick and was taken to the hospice. Drivers along Interstate 80 in the US got a saucy surprise on Monday morning after a truck crashed - expelling over 150,000 tomatoes along the road.

Homeaway INSPIRED BY DANNY CASEY A WEEKLY ROUND-UP OF NEWS • VIEWS FROM KERRY AND AROUND THE WORLD KILLARNEY SUPPORT

It is probably the most unusual feat anyone has accomplished in recent times - a man paddling a 'boat' made out of a hallowed pumpkin. To celebrate his 60th birthday Nebraska man Duane Hansen paddled 38 miles down the Missouri River on Saturday. Now he's hoping that his attempt will make it into the Guinness World ReDuanecords. set out from the public boat docks in Bellevue at approximately 7.30am in an 846-pound pumpkin and arrived in Nebraska City just after 6.30pm.

According to local patrol officers, the tomatoes each measured approximately the size of a fist, and stretched over 200ft across multiple lanes, with a red mush about "two feet deep" being formed as a result.

Saucy surprise for California drivers!

"They say if you stay in your job long enough you might see just about everything and this morning was one of those days!" a city witness said in the Facebook post. Named SS Berta, the pumpkin vessel had a cupholder carved into the hull.

The previous record for longest journey by pumpkin boat was 25.5 miles (41.038 km), set in 2018, according to the Guinness World Records website. "Within our application process, we provide the applicant with guidelines that are specific to that record category and must be adhered to, to qualify," Guinness World Records spokesperson Kylie Galloway said. "These guidelines also detail the evidence that must be submitted. Once received and reviewed, our Records Management Team will then confirm the success or failure of the record attempt."

The tomato traffic jam caused a build up of heavy traffic, there were no reported injuries - however it took a long time for Department of Transportation workers to clean up the mess. Investigators said the truck first crashed into another vehicle near the Davis Street onramp, causing the truck driver to lose control. It then hit the centre divide and tomatoes went flying! Other vehicles also crashed into each other due to the slippery nature of the spill. The driver of the big rig and two other individuals were treated at a hospital.

“We are honoured to be chosen as the beneficiaries of the upcoming fundraising dance in Newmarket," CEO of the Irish Community Air Ambulance, Micheál Sheridan, said. "It shows the value that is placed on the service locally. We have received incredible support since day one and we are forever grateful. It’s the dances, raffles, quiz nights and events that have allowed us to bring hope to so many families in rural Ireland in particular.”

Mike Condon from Kerry and locals Sheila Fitzgerald and Annmarie O’Riordan will be on stage at the CYMS Hall in Newmarket tonight (Friday) for the event which is being organised by well-known promoter John Joe Herlihy. Musician and singer Mike Condon needs no introduction to dancing audiences, having built up a strong following throughout Munster in a career spanning over three decades. While Annmarie O’Riordan is recognised primarily for her wonderful renditions of traditional songs, she is equally at home with performing for a dancing audience. Annmarie just recently released a new single ‘Do you Hear the Robin Sing?’ which is currently receiving extensive airplay on all radio stations. She will launch her brand new album at the INEC, Killarney, on September 25.

Lennon, who lived with his aunt Mimi in nearby Menlove Avenue, was a frequent visitor there. From Julia's book 'Imagine This', she wrote: "I shall never forget the hilarious bathroom jam sessions she shared with the budding Beatles. The bathroom in our little house in Blomfield Road was probably one of the smallest in Britain. To see John, Paul, George, Pete Shotton, Ivan Vaughan, my mother and probably a couple of hangers-on scrambling around inside, trying to find a place to sit, was like a comedy act. They would be squeezed into the bath, perched on top of the loo seat, propped up against the handbasin, squatted on the floor, and standing with one leg up on the edge of the bath to support a guitar. Even getting the door closed was a feat." Paul Fairweather, auctioneer at Omega Auctions, said the "house is well known to Beatles fans and anyone who has even a passing interest in how the world's most famous musical group came to be. We saw worldwide interest in our recent sale of George Harrison's childhood home and we expect possibly even greater attention on this property. It has huge historical importance, is in a great area and is an established part of the Beatles tours around the city. We are excited to see what it will achieve when the sale ends."

The Haunting of Hill House meets Knives Out in a bid for an inheritance that will leave Helen Vaughan either rich...or dead. Helen Vaughan doesn't know why she and her mother left their ancestral home at Harrowstone Hall, called Harrow, or why they haven't spoken to their extended family since. So when her grandfather dies, she's shocked to learn that he has left everything—the house, the grounds, and the money— to her. The inheritance comes with one condition: she must stay on the grounds of Harrow for one full year, or she'll be left with nothing. There is more at stake than money. For as long as she can remember, Harrow has haunted Helen's dreams—and now those dreams have become a waking nightmare. Helen knows that if she is going to survive the year, she needs to uncover the secrets of Harrow. Why is the house built like a labyrinth? What is digging the holes that appear in the woods each night? And why does the house itself seem to be making her sick? With each twisted revelation, Helen questions what she knows about Harrow, her family, and even herself. She no longer wonders if she wants to leave…if she can.

WHAT TO DO IF NO CAO OFFER IS RECEIVED

CAREFUL CONSIDERATION OF CAO OFFERS

If you wish to defer an offer do not accept the offer via the CAO. You need to email the Admissions Office of the appropriate Higher Education Institution (HEI) immediately giving your name as it appears on the CAO application, quoting your CAO number and the course code which you wish to defer and give the reason(s) for the request. ‘Deferred Entry’ must be marked clearly in the subject line of the email, which must arrive in the HEI Admissions Office at least two days before the reply day shown on the offer notice and the HEI will communicate directly with the student. All communications about deferrals must be sent to the relevant Admissions Office, not to CAO.

The ‘Available Places’ facility opens on CAO on September the 9 at 12pm. These places become available where the HEI still have places available on courses after the Round 1 CAO offers have been issued.

It's time to get ready to wipe away the summer damage and even skin complexion after months of sun exposure. There's no need for aggressive chemical peels when you can rid dull skin with a CACI Rejuvenating facial with microdermabrasion and LED light therapy and ETR (Enhanced Tissue Repair). It will help to reduce hyperpigmentation, reduce those sun spots, acne scars and acne. It can also help to minimise pore size. Microdermabrasion uses a minimal abrasive instrument to gently resurface your skin, removing the thicker uneven outer layers and has many benefits. We use microdermabrasion for skin rejuvenation to treat light scarring, discolouration, sun damage and white heads. It's a great facial for men's skin type also. It's well known that too much sun can affect the elasticity of the skin. This can show ageing signs earlier especially if the skin gets burnt. The sun is important for our bodies; it helps with production of vitamin D, and improves sleep quality and our mood - so don't deprive yourself of the sun but always wear SPF all year round. For men, especially being outside or exposed to various environments, toxins are rough on the skin and facial skin is affected the most. Too much sun, wind, or debris can overwhelm skin pores and leave it looking and feeling congested. Crow's feet often occur because of too much ultra violet exposure. Spending too much time in the sun can result in the loss of collagen and skin can begin to loosen over time. Enhanced Tissue Repair (ETR) pads have an amazing healing effect and are used in burn units in hospitals. Recent scar tissue, fine lines and blemishes can be greatly improved by this technique. Clients notice their skin is more retentive of the products, therefore achieving a healthy glow. ETR is a continuous flow of microcurrent which helps to heal and repair. LED light therapy is used to reduce swelling, decrease inflammation, and accelerate healing. Light therapy encourages collagen to stimulate and rebuild. The treatment is used to repair and rebuild which helps to rejuvenate the skin. The LED light therapy converts the light into energy to help stimulate cell growth for renewal, repair and rejuvenation. For more information or to book a purifying facial, suitable for male and female, call Jill on 064 6632966.

Applications for ‘Available Places’ are open to applicants who are already in the CAO system and to candidates who have not already submitted a CAO application this year but who now wish to apply. Applicants must meet the minimum entry requirements for the courses for which they wish to apply. Further details can be found on www.cao.ie.

With that said, the 10-year Treasury at 3.5% seems like a solid entry point to build up long-term exposure. While I believe that interest rates will be higher for longer, I don’t believe that rates can remain elevated for very long, making treasuries an interesting investment.

We are in the interlude between inflation peaking and economic data slowing, a momentary sweet spot if you will. Well, the interlude is over, and the sweet spot is no more, ground to a shuddering halt by a direct and concise message of intent from Fed chair Jerome Powell on “WhileFriday. higher interest rates, slower growth, and softer labour market conditions will bring down inflation, they will also bring some pain to households and businesses. These are the unfortunate costs of reducing inflation but a failure to restore price stability would mean far greater pain.” In short, don’t be surprised to see more market volatility and economic pain as interest rates continue to rise in an effort to cool Sometimesinflation.pain is for the greater good, apparently.

Photos: Take photos of the scene of the collision if you have a camera. These should include photos of the vehicles before they are moved. Garda details: You should get the name or number of the Garda to whom the collision is reported. You may need to ensure that a Garda report has been filed for insurance purposes. “You should write down an account of all relevant facts connected to the collision as soon as possible afterwards,” advises Deirdre. “Be sure to sign and date your account (including the time) when it is completed. This could be a very useful document to have going forward.”

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS

• The owner whose property has been damaged, or someone asking on their behalf or • Give the information to an independent person who was present when the collision occurred. Report the accident: If there is no Garda present, you must report the accident as soon as possible to a Garda who is nearby or at a Garda station. Focus on your breath during pelvic floor exercise

Let’s face it, despite our best efforts, accidents do happen. If you are involved in a motor collision, the law requires you to do certain things. This applies whether the collision was with another motor vehicle, another user of the road or an object along the road.

• The name and address of the car own•erThe car’s registration number

The foundation for everything in pregnancy and postpartum exercise is your breath.

Provide information: If a Garda is present at the scene of the collision, you must give them, when requested:

Your pelvic floor and diaphragm work in tandem with each other; imagine it as an Whenelevator.you inhale, your diaphragm contracts and moves down and your pelvic floor mirrors this by relaxing. When you exhale, your pelvic floor lifts and contracts and your diaphragm rises in mirror response to it.

“Apart from the legal aspect, there are also things it is advisable to do for safety reasons and to help reduce your possible financial loss,” cautions Deirdre Vann Bourke, Kerry Manager with South Munster Citizens Information Service. “Forewarned is forearmed so it’s worth being informed about what to do in the event of an accident.” What are my legal obligations? Your legal obligations, if you are involved in a motor collision, are set out in Section 106 of the Road Traffic Act 1961 as amended. Firstly, you must stop your car and remain at the scene of the accident for a reasonable time.

NEW ROSE: Clodagh and Aideen Blennerhassett from Killarney were lucky enough to meet the new Rose of Tralee Rachel Duffy from Westmeath, in the Meadowlands Hotel.

• Motor insurance details (including the expiry date of the policy) If there is no Garda present you must give this information on request to:

It’s all about regulating intra abdominal pressure to prevent your body from experiencing problems. Everyone should do this, but it is even more important for mamas and mamasDuringto-be. exercise we want our pelvic floor to lift when we exert ourselves or lift heavy objects. We want to teach our bodies to exhale with exertion - the toughest part of the movement. For example, when you squat: • Inhale when you lower down and relax at the bottom • Exhale to stand, lifting pelvic floor and drawing deep abdominals together - this same strategy applies to any exercise. As a mom, you also want to exhale with every day movements such as:

Decide whether to move the cars: If the collision is serious, do not move the cars. If the collision is minor and the cars are blocking the road or are a danger to other road users, mark their position on the road then move them. Take care when moving damaged cars and be alert to the danger from leaking fuel. Warn other drivers: Try to warn oncoming traffic of the accident. You can warn them by using your hazard lights. If you have a reflective advance-warning triangle, place it on the road far enough from the scene of the collision to give enough warning to approaching traffic. If the collision happens near a bend in the road, make sure you give warning to traffic on both sides of the bend. If you need to ask for another road user’s help to warn traffic, do so right away. Call for help: If someone is injured, call the Gardaí (telephone 999 or 112) and, if necessary, ambulance services.

WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?

Get information: You should get the information listed above (under ‘Provide Information’) from the other drivers involved in the collision. If the collision involves damage to property, get the owner’s name, address and telephone Getnumber.the names, addresses and telephone numbers of any witnesses, as these may be required if a question of liability arises.

Last year’s Premier A runners-up Killarney Athletic get their latest title tilt in motion on Sunday with an away tie against Castleisland in Georgie O’Callaghan Park, while newcomers Castlegregory Celtic host Tralee Dynamos. Defending champions Killarney Celtic are in Munster Champions Trophy action; they welcome Avenue United (Clare) to Celtic Park on Sunday. They will then get the defence of their Kerry league title up and running with a home match against Dynamos on Thursday.

In what can only be described as a major departure from previous seasons, the Kerry District League has issued participating clubs with a fixture list that runs up as far as the Christmas break. Fixtures were previously fixed on a week-by-week basis, a practice that was a source of frustration for many local soccer players as it made it difficult to plan ahead with regards to work, holidays and social events. This issue was highlighted by this journalist in last week’s edition but we are now pleased to report that the league already had a plan in place to bin the former system for the upcoming season, which kicks off this weekend. Now players and officials have a more concrete schedule to plan for and around, with new fixtures secretary Tadhg Healy to oversee matters for 2022/23.

It is a busy weekend for Kerry’s underage League of Ireland teams with the U14s, U17s and U19s all in action. On Saturday the U14s play Treaty United at home and the U17s travel to Dublin to take on Bohs. On Sunday the U19s play host to Wexford in Mounthawk Park.

Former Kerry star James O’Donoghue kicked an outrageous point from a seemingly impossible angle as Legion beat Kilcummin in the last eight of the Intermediate Club Championship on Sunday.

Killarney man Tom Doherty has secured his place in the European Playoff Series for disabled golfers. The competition, which will take place on September 19-21 in Stratford-on-Avon in England, will feature the eight top ranked players in Europe. Doherty has qualified as fifth seed thanks to his performances in the Johnny Reay Classic (1st), the English Amateur Open (2nd), and most recently in the inaugural Irish Open for Golfers with a Disability (5th). The Kerryman will be Ireland’s only representative at the Doherty, event.who sustained a spinal injury in his youth and now walks with the assistance of a cane, says he enjoyed his last outing in Roganstown, Co. Dublin for the Irish Open. “It was an excellent event,” he said. “Very professionally run. There were a lot of new players from all over the country who were given the opportunity to play in a disabled competition for the first time. I was amazed by the numbers. That was my toughest competition so far but what kept me up high in the rankings was coming second in the English Amateur Open, which was a big one for “Qualifyingme. for the European Playoff Series is the icing on the cake really. It’s a great opportunity and I’m extremely excited about playing against the top players in Europe.”

JOD points from sideline as Legion down Kilcummin

Nothing seemed to be on for O’Donoghue as he shaped up to kick a sideline within the opposition’s 13-metre line midway through the first half, but he managed to curl over a beauty from the stand side in Derreen into the dressing room Kilcumminend. felt the score shouldn’t have stood because O’Donoghue had stepped onto the field before striking – and video evidence backed that theory up – but still there was no denying that the Legion man’s effort was sensational. The teams went in at the break level on five points apiece but the hosts pulled away in the second half to win by 1-13 to 0-8. Cian Gammell was excellent for Legion, who will now take on An Ghaeltacht as soon as both clubs’ players are finished up in the County Championship. Following their victory over Laune Rangers, Rathmore will play Beaufort on the other side of the draw. Elsewhere, Spa were unfortunate not to come out the right side of a dramatic Senior Club semi-final against Kerins O’Rahillys on Saturday. The Killarney club had home advantage after topping a group that included Dingle, Na Gaeil and Kenmare but they just came up short against Strand Road after extra time. Spa had a man advantage for much of the game (several cards were issued to both sides on the day) but they trailed for much of normal time, thanks in part to a Jack Savage penalty for Rahillys. The hosts equalised late on via Shane Cronin, however, and they almost snatched it at the death when Cian Tobin’s shot came back off the post. Rahillys, led by experienced forward Barry John Keane, dug deep in ET and eventually prevailed with a goal to spare. The Tralee outfit will play Templenoe in the final after the small club from South Kerry overcame the challenge of Dingle in the other semi. That decider will take place after the upcoming Kerry SFC has Significantly, concluded. Rahillys will be without influential free-taker Jack Savage, who is moving to Dubai for work. Former Kerry panellist Cormac Coffey has already moved to the UAE for the same reason. Two East Kerry teams still have designs on promotion to Intermediate from Junior Premier: Fossa and Listry. Fossa will take on Ardfert in the semi-final after David Clifford and co. defeated Annascaul by four points in last Saturday’s quarter-final. Meanwhile, Listry’s victory over Ballyduff (3-14 to 3-6) tees up a last four tie against Ballymacelligott. Firies are still very much in contention at Junior level after beating Scartaglen after extra time in the quarters. Knocknagoshel stand in their way in the next round, with the winners going up against either Cordal or Tarbert in the final. The next phase of the Intermediate, Junior Premier and Junior Club Championships will take place October 8/9, or potentially sooner if the teams involved have all of their divisional representatives available to them.

How does the Killarney native rate his chances heading into the prestigious “I’dtournament?beconfident enough but I believe I’ve been drawn against last year’s winner. I’m practicing a lot at the moment and I’m getting a lot of support from Killarney Golf & Fishing Club, through captain Tommy Galvin, which is great. “It’s golf so it’s all on the day.”

It was officially opened on Saturday last by Norma Foley TD, Minister for EducaEveryonetion. is welcome and you will be astounded by what generosity of spirit and sheer determination by dedicated local enthusiasts of athletics has achieved. The club officials faced many challenges. They deserve great credit and the good news is that the long- overdue track and field facilities are available to locals. In her address, Minister Foley hit the right target that this column has been promoting for over 50 years. “Here in The Kingdom, sport matters. It defines us, inspires us, and unites us. Sport celebrates friendships, promotes good health, and brings families, neighbours and communities closer together. It fosters a sense of belonging and inclusion. Sport also teaches us that even out of deep disappointment and defeat, seeds of success can be sown that can often lead to great victory.”

TRACK: Killarney Valley's spectacular facility, located alongside St Brendan's College on the New Road, was officially unveiled on Saturday last.

PLAYING CROQUET

Jerry continued: “Some grants were available but we had to do a lot of fundraising. We also created a new club title, Killarney Valley AC, which caters for athletes not just from the town, but from surrounding areas.”

FACILITIES Quite often athletics can be deemed a lonely sport unless you are attached to a club and have not only the facilities but also qualified and enthusiastic coaches to progress in your chosen sport. Personal Best may well be your All-Ireland. You too can lift your own Sam Maguire. For the few it will be winning at local, national or even international levels. It must be 40 years at least since Frank Switzer and his wife Eileen floated the idea of acquiring a central facility to cater for the wonderful athletes coming through in the Community Games. Through no fault of that wonderful couple, their dream never became a reality. I spoke to Jerry Griffin during last Saturday’s event and asked him how they managed to get this project over the “Aline.group of us who were interested in athletics got together nearly 10 years ago. Cathal O’Brien and I travelled to other countries to view facilities for athletes. Then a small group set about identifying a suitable location in the Killarney area. We were very fortunate that St Brendan’s College came on board so Jerrywillingly.”andMinister Norma both pinpointed that in her address. “I am especially pleased to see the generous co-operation between Killarney Valley AC and St Brendan’s College, whose trustee St Brendan’s Trust have leased the site for this superb facility,” the Minister said. “I believe it was Helen Keller who once remarked that, ‘Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much’.”

Sarah Leahy is top class at 60, 100 and 200 metres and even at this stage has If you haven’t seen it yet, take a stroll down New Road. Take a sharp left as you go down the Bishop’s Path opposite the Mon and this will bring you into the new sporting arena of Killarney Valley AC on the grounds of St Brendan’s College.

New track is the result of sheer determination

For many decades that first section of St Brendan’s College grounds provided tennis courts, basketball area and a lawn which Fr John Moynihan, the president of the college in the early sixties, treated with great care. He was the Boss and he understood the stressful time for students coming up to the Leaving Certificate exams, so he introduced croquet, usually regarded as a leisurely activity for senior citizens. My memory is that it was only made available in thirdterm, the ideal antidote to the stressful time when the students were ‘pounding’ (studying) hard for the Now,exams.the croquet is no more. Instead there is a state of the art running track and jumping areas. In the centre is an astroturf pitch. All the facilities are floodlit to a very high level. This wonderful facility is being rented by clubs and enthusiasts from other sports. Some of the Killarney Valley AC members are already well on the way to national and international successes.

MINISTER FOLEY I had a long informal chat with Minister Norma after completing her official duties. We started with our common interest. I learned what she had to say about the challenges that students, parents and teachers are facing this week with regard to school transport, SEN, and the Leaving Cert results. They were due to go online this morning (Friday). Best of luck to all candidates today and on the road ahead, so full of possibilities for you. Follow your Idream.putit to Minister Norma that this arena is a wonderful amenity in town, surrounded by schools, with so many quality coaches, and catering for diversity and inclusivity. “I couldn’t have put it better,” she said with a smile. She had highlighted these topics in her address, lauding Killarney Valley AC for its “open-door policy that the club promotes as it supports Paralympians who continue to inspire, breaking barriers whilst growing their sport on an international stage. I very much welcome too the fact that this club promotes inclusivity at all levels. I am especially pleased to note that female participation is significant and at least two thirds of members here at Killarney Valley are female.”

RUGBY: One of the participating teams at the inaugural Tag Killarney Tournament which was staged at Killarney RFC's home grounds in Aghadoe.

The closing event with the tiny tots doing their lap of honour on the track was very fitting. Someday, somewhere, some of them will most likely wear the green singlet on the international stage, thanks to the five-point road map for achieving success that Killarney Valley has in place.

Jerry Griffin condenses it to what is needed to achieve your goals in athletics. “You need a track, athletes, coaches, motivation and club back-up back from Killarney AC.” Killarney Valley AC members have been excelling this year as you have been reading and their standards are improving all the time, with the coaching and facilities right here on their doorsteps. It’s up and up for Killarney Valley AC athletes and I look forward to the day when we can welcome them home to a big comhghairdeas after winning on the world stages. Anyone interested in athletics and the facilities provided by this wonderful addition to sport in Killarney is advised to log on to the Killarney Valley AC website or call Jerry Griffin on 087 6879186.

reached the qualifying time for the 2023 European Indoor Championships. It is now up to Athletics Ireland to give her the green singlet. How about Jordan Lee who gave an exhibition in the high jump on Saturday last. Read Adam Moynihan’s excellent interview with Jordan in last week’s Killarney Advertiser. Brilliant successes and heartbreak in Tokyo, but the burning ambition to push out the boundaries even further still glows for Jordan. Club high jump coach Adam Delaney was a gold medal winner in the National Masters Championships with a leap of 1.75m. It was a privilege to see him move so gracefully with perfect rhythm gliding over the High Jump, just one of the splendid exhibitions of track and jumping shows for the benefit of a huge crowd of spectators at the official opening. The event was blessed by glorious sunshine. For too many years athletes had little by way of facilities, very much the poor relation compared to the local GAA, soccer and rugby clubs. Well done to all concerned on getting this project literally over the line. With athletics getting long overdue decent coverage on RTÉ, for example sprinter Israel Olatunde, Ireland's fastest man, hitting the headlines, athletics is making strides and getting the higher profile it deserves.

The exhibitions of running and jumping were excellent, splendidly choreographed by top coach Tomás Griffin, himself a former European record holder in sprinting.

COMMUNITY GAMES: The Kilcummin U16 music group who were recently crowned All-Ireland champions at the Community Games.

I just decided to go to Arthur Ashe Stadium, which is open to anyone with accreditation, and he was in there practicing. He took a photo with me afterwards.

The 40-year-old is expected to call it a day once her involvement in this year’s tournament is over; she is in third round action today (Friday) against Ajla Tomljanović.

“My boss there referred me another S&C coach, Ian Jones, who has worked in the NFL with the Houston Texans. That was my thing when I was studying, I wanted to go and work in the NFL. When Ian offered me a job, I was delighted. I took it because of the amount of connections

“I remember one day I was talking to İpek and I said, ‘Jeez, I’d love to meet Serena Williams’. And 10 seconds later, I swear, she was there warming up next to us. I turned around and was like, ‘I can’t be here right now’.

Meet the Kerry woman

He’s just really sound and makes time for everyone. That’s the impression I got from him.” This particular US Open is very special indeed for one of the greatest tennis players of all time, Serena Williams.

By chance, O’Sullivan’s appointment has coincided nicely with the most exciting time in the pro tennis calendar.

“Injury risk is always a problem, and you have to think about nutrition constantly.

O’Sullivan is growing accustomed to being around the likes of Nadal and Andy Murray and Naomi Osaka, but she admits to being especially starstruck around the 23-time Grand Slam champ.

“I don’t like bothering players when they’re doing something so I actually caught her for a picture after her practice two days later. She was sound. Very nice rubbing shoulders with Serena and Nadal Molly O’Sullivan chats to Adam Moynihan about life as a strength and conditioning coach to pro tennis player İpek Öz

The athlete in need turned out to be the No. 1 female tennis player in Turkey, İpek O’Sullivan,Öz.

an accomplished rower who earlier this year won a national title in the women’s quad with Killorglin RC, jumped at the opportunity. Although she readily confesses to not being a big tennis fan up to that point. “I actually wasn’t to be honest with you,” she smiles. “I used to play it when I was a kid but I would only watch the majors. I was never a hardcore tennis fan. But I just always wanted to work in professional sport. That was the goal. So it was a no-brainer to take the job.” In addition to taking care of Öz’s physical training, O’Sullivan also manages the nutrition side of things. She says she has been taken aback by the sheer volume of work pro tennis players get through on a daily basis. “It’s so different to any sport I’ve worked in. It’s insane the amount they have to go through. There’s a documentary on Netflix worth watching called Untold: Breaking Point. It shows how mentally draining it is. “It’s all about showing up and doing the exact same thing for hours, and then doing the gym for an hour. And then repeating that the next day. In terms of workload, it’s very high. “İpek gets up in the morning and hits [balls] for two or two-and-a-half hours on the court. It’s every other day basically for me; one day will be a weights ses-

As a player you really have to love what you’re doing or else it just won’t work.”

The following morning I saw him in the hallway and he said ‘good morning’.

Molly O’Sullivan always wanted to work in professional sports but she never imagined it would happen like this. Despite playing a bit of tennis as a kid, the Ballyhar native admits to only having a passing interest in the sport. Up until recently, that is. In April she came on board as strength and conditioning coach for up and coming Turkish player İpek Öz. The last few months have been a whirlwind of international travel, Grand Slams, and mixing with some of the greatest tennis players of all time. It’s all bit surreal, O’Sullivan admits, although when you speak to her it doesn’t take long to figure out how she has ended up where she is. During our walk around Killarney House and Gardens on a sunny Tuesday morning, the 24-yearold comes across as clear-minded and driven; the type of person for whom mediocrity isn’t an option. Initially she wanted to be a sports agent so she studied Law and Psychology in UL, but the draw of a more hands-on role was strong. “It was a crossroads, left or right, and I couldn’t really decide for a very long time,” she recalls. “In the end I went and did a Masters in Sports Performance in UL. I finished that a year-and-a-half ago. Now I’m doing a Masters of Science in Sports Nutrition, which I’ll be finishing in UponNovember.”graduating from her first Masters, she quickly picked up an S&C gig with the Irish swim team. She enjoyed the role (despite dealing with the effects of the pandemic during her time there) but she ultimately came to the conclusion that it wasn’t for her.

Since linking up with her new employer for the first time in Sweden (where Öz won a €25,000 tournament), the Kerry woman has been at Wimbledon, Roland Garros and, most recently, the US Open. She helped Öz through a two-week training camp in Istanbul before flying out to the latter tournament, which is still ongoing. The Turkish player, who is currently ranked 165th in the world, exited in the qualifiers at the hands of Leolia Jeanjean of France last Wednesday. It was nevertheless an incredible experience for O’Sullivan, not least because of the famous faces she bumped into while working at the iconic Flushing Meadows “Thevenue.US Open was cool because all the main draw players arrive early. While we were there I watched Rafa Nadal practice every day. You meet them all in the corridor every day. I was just star-struck all the time.

FAMOUS FACE: O'Sullivan with tennis legend Serena Williams at the US Open.

Ian has and the amount of people he Aknows.”shorttime after linking up with Jones, her foresight paid off - albeit it in an unexpected manner. “I was working with Ian for less than three months when he sent me a voice note saying that there was an American tennis coach looking for a strength and conditioning coach, and would I have any interest in travelling out there and trialling it for a few weeks.”

“I’ve met Nadal a good few times actually. He came very early [to the US Open].

sion and the next day will be a conditioning session. So she’s training for about four hours every day, at least.

The Australian Open is supposed to be the nicest of all of them for the athletes and coaches. The facilities are meant to be insane. You’re treated like royalty at the Grand Slams. It’s really nice to be a part of it.” As for her future beyond that, O’Sullivan’s ambitions remain sky high, although she does feel as though being a woman is an “obstacle” in her chosen field. She was fortunate that Öz “really wanted” a female S&C coach, but job-hunting in male sports may prove to be more challenging. “It’s not easy getting a job in professional sports as a female strength and conditioning coach. It’s just not that common yet. I was the only one at the US Open from what we could see. The females there were sports psychologists, nutritionists, or you’d see the odd physio. The majority of the teams were all male. I was constantly getting asked when I was playing because everyone thought I was a tennis player. “Being a girl is still an obstacle, for sure. Especially working with men’s teams. That’s why I did my second masters; I wanted to have everything covered from an employer’s point of view. “I’d like to help İpek get as high as she can in the rankings and go on that journey with her a bit. I’ll just see how that goes really and then, like I said, I always wanted to work in the NFL. I had planned to do that this summer on an internship but when I got offered this job, it took precedence. “We’ll just have to see where it goes.”

about it.” What do her family back in Ballyhar, a rural townland near Killarney, make of it “Theyall? think I have notions now I’d say,” O’Sullivan jokes. “They think it’s unreal though. It’s what I’ve always wanted to do. I’ve had it planned when I was studying that I wasn’t going to end up anywhere else besides professional sport. Thankfully it has paid off now.” Next up is a busy period that includes trips to Bucharest, Budapest and Parma. O’Sullivan says Öz is making good progress as she comes to terms with elite level tennis. She’s doing okay. She’s dealing with a lot of other things on the side that is affecting her mentally (Öz recently split with her coach). Other than that she’s going well. It’s her first year in Grand Slam tournaments so it’s a huge difference for her. You’re walking into the US Open and there are thousands of people there asking for pictures and autographs. And hers was a night match so everyone was drinking… It’s just a different kettle of fish altogether. “She’s aiming to get into the top 100, and then the top 50. It’s all leading up to January, really, and the Australian Open in Melbourne. The big goal for İpek will be to win a few matches at a “It’smajor.exciting.

MINOR CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP: Keel/ Listry v Kilcummin at 4pm in Listry GAA Grounds on Saturday, September 3. Please come and support. Kilcummin GAA CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP: Quarter-Final - Legion 1-13 Kilcummin 0-8. After matching our opponents in the first half we succumbed to the greater power and accuracy of the opposition in the last fifteen minutes to exit the championship on Sunday last. Two points from play by the influential Kieran Murphy, as well as a brace from Brendan Kealy and one from Noel Duggan accounted for our five first half points. This period saw our defence marshalled by the excellent Dara O’Callaghan do well to contain the potent Legion forwards to leave the score at 5 points a piece. While we tried hard in the second half and added further scores from Noel Duggan twice and Kieran Murphy from play we were always chasing the game as the strength of legions panel came to bear. Maybe if the ball that was cleared off the line had gone in, things might have been so much closer but as it happened it was the Legion who broke out and finished to the net and eased to a deserved victory in those final minutes. Killarney Legion GAA LADIES FOOTBALL: No joy for our U15 and U17 teams this past week in their respective Club Championship games. The U15s made a decent start against their opponents Inbhear Sceine Gaels, actually leading 1-4 to 0-6 close to half time. But a crucial score just before half time, an ISG goal, changed the complexion of the game. The Kenmare side went on to dominate the second half, running out 3-15 to 1-7 winners. Credit to our girls though they battled on with commendable spirit. The U17 Girls welcomed Corca Dhuibhne to Direen last Thursday evening and even though they came out the wrong side of a 5-8 to 4-7 scoreline their performance in the second half could have got them more. Trailing 2-8 to 1-4 at half time a stirring second half saw them close the gap on numerous occasions but a well timed goal from the visitors always kept the gap between the teams. Again no shortage of spirit but alas no joy. The Senior Ladies travelled to Clounmacon on Sunday to face the Clounmacon/Moyvane combo and came home with a hard earned draw. Trailing by a goal at half time they pulled out all the stops in the second half with the game on a 2-10 to 3-7 scoreline. The Ladies have a busy month in September and we'll be keeping track of their progress with a home game this weekend.
