Work to begin on town cycle project this summer Plans for Killarney's new €5m interconnected cycle paths came a step closer this week with €2m announced for the project which is set to begin this summer.
Garda renew appeal for witnesses
| By Michelle Crean
EXCLUSIVE
Funding was released under the Active Travel Programme which will include a total of 3.8km of cycle paths on Rock Road, Lewis Road, Park Road, the Gaelscoil Road and Deerpark Road. €704,835 was allocated to the Rock Road section, €113,500 for the Deerpark Road/Gaelscoil Junction, and €781,165 for the Gaelscoil/Chestnut Drive under the Kerry Active Travel 2021 Allocations. The ambitious project is due to go to tender shortly with construction expected to begin in the mid to late summer. A further €550,000 was allocated to the Flesk Walkway and Cycleway in Killarney, and €300,000 for other works on Rock Road. The Cathaoirleach and Chief Executive of Kerry County Council have welcomed

the announcement of a total of €5.6m for the county, which will also include work in Tralee, Listowel, Dingle, Killorglin and Kenmare. Cllr Patrick Connor-Scarteen said that critical leisure and recreational infrastructure projects across Kerry would benefit from the funding. "It is great news for the county and an acknowledgement of the hard work of Kerry County Council in developing these projects," he said. "The development of our cycling and
walking infrastructure is as important as it ever was and will ensure that walkers and cyclists will be able to avail of improved facilities." Chief Executive Moira Murrell said that the development of sustainable transport infrastructure remained a key priority for the local authority. "I would like to thank Kerry County Council staff who have developed these projects in recent years and which can now progress to being constructed for the benefit of all our citizens," she said.
Gardaí have renewed their appeal for witnesses in relation to a fatal road traffic collision that occurred at the Cleeney Roundabout last year. Investigators believe that a lady walking a small white dog on the morning of July 17, 2020 may have witnessed this collision and is yet to come forward. Gardaí are appealing to this lady to make contact as her witness account is required to assist the investigation. Anyone else who was in the Cleeney Roundabout area of Killarney at around 8.30am on the day is asked to contact Killarney Garda Station on 064 667 1160.
Home-based vaccinations Opening of Killarney centre on the way to Kerry "depends on supply" | By Sean Moriarty Home-based vaccinations for the elderly or infirm will begin in Kerry in the next two to three days. The HSE has confirmed that by the end of February that over 45,000 people aged over 85 had been vaccinated, either at their local GP clinic or in a community vaccination centre like the one which will soon be in operation at Killarney Sports Centre. However, the HSE has also identified a cohort of patients that are housebound and are not normally able to attend the GP practice or a Primary Care Centre and, as a result, will start rolling out a home-vaccination schedule in Cork and Kerry. In a letter dated Wednesday, March 31, which has been seen by the Killarney Advertiser, a senior HSE official said: “We
have had confirmation from the National Ambulance Service in recent days that home-based vaccinations are commencing in Cork and Kerry this week and first doses should be completed over two days in Cork and three days in Kerry.” GPs must make a referral to the National Ambulance Service who then arrange for home based vaccination. The matter was raised by Cllr Michael Gleeson who sits on the South West Regional Health Forum. “There have been a number of complaints on behalf of some housebound elderly who have not had any contact from anyone regarding their vaccination. They fear that they are being forgotten,” he said. Meanwhile, O’Callaghan Coaches on the Tralee Road is offering free transport to and from vaccination centres for people unable to get there themselves.
| By Sean Moriarty Both Cork Kerry Community Healthcare and the South/Southwest Hospital Group are working behind the scenes to open the Killarney Vaccination Centre as soon as possible following the opening of the Tralee centre this week. Health officials were unable to put an exact date on the opening of the Killarney Centre which will be based in Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre off the Michael D O’Shea Roundabout on the Bypass Road. “It all depends on the availability of vaccines,” a Cork Kerry Community Healthcare official told the Killarney Advertiser. “I don’t want to put a date on it, only for something to happen, and the date turns out to be incorrect.” Tralee’s vaccination centre was officially

opened at Munster Technological University North Campus on Tuesday. The Tralee centre is managed by Marie Flynn who is also the Director of Nursing at Killarney Community Hospital. Cork Kerry Community Healthcare will announce the manager of the Killarney centre just ahead of its official opening. Marie will remain in charge in Tralee and will not be transferred to the Killarney centre.

Black Valley ready to receive Musk satellite Internet | By Sean Moriarty Installation of Elon Musk's Starlink Internet service in the Black Valley could begin as early as next week, and the project could be operational within a month, the Killarney Advertiser has learned.
BRAND DEAL: Oisín O'Connor from Ross Road has secured a deal with global retail giant Hollister Co. Photo: Michelle Crean
Oisín lands global clothing deal A young Killarney man who had extra time on his hands due to lockdown over the past year - has accidently become an online "influencer" - and managed to bag himself an impressive contract. | By Michelle Crean Global retail giant Hollister Co was so taken with Oisín O'Connor's Instagram following over the past few months that they offered him an ambassador role for the year as part of their new campaign. It's a dream come true for the Mary Immaculate College student, son of multi-talented musician Liam O'Connor, who lives in Ross Road. Oisín (20), who himself is a drummer and guitar player, had a small online presence - but by posting music which he recorded in his home studio - within a year he has amassed 5,000 followers. This lead to sponsorship from drumstick makers Vic Firth, as well as a paid partnership with Bulldog Skincare North America, and others. "Over lockdown I was doing music and my friends told me I should post it online," Oisín told the Killarney Advertiser.
"I wasn't doing Instagram for business. I started out with nothing but I reached out to Vic Firth as they'd be renowned in the music industry and have 700k followers." One of Oisín's songs got 50k plays and his presence grew from there, so much so that Oisín couldn't believe it when American singer-songwriter Ne-Yo also made contact with him and they're now in regular contact via text message. "Ne-Yo reached out to me, he messaged he on Instagram. I did a cover of his song 'Let Me Love You', and I nearly fell down when I saw his message." From there Hollister got in touch. "It's a yearly contract and I took the opportunity as they're good to be associated with. I probably wouldn't be in this position only for COVID which gave me the time to do more music which is definitely what I want to go into."
Starlink is SpaceX’s plan to build an interconnected Internet network with thousands of satellites, designed to deliver high-speed Internet to anywhere on the planet. The network is an ambitious endeavour, which SpaceX has said will cost about $10 billion or more to build. In February, the Killarney Advertiser reported that The Black Valley – one of the last places in Ireland to get electricity and telephone connections – could be one of the first in the world to get a satellite based broadband Internet connection – thanks to interest from the Tesla electric car founder and tech-billionaire Musk. Since the initial report, Kerry County Council has been working behind the scenes to bring this ambitious project to a reality. The project has been pushed by Mayor
of Kerry, Patrick Connor-Scarteen. The Black Valley is situated in his elected municipal district area. A team, led by Killarney man Brian Looney, the Council’s head of IT, has been meeting with various stakeholders. These include online meetings with a Community Group in the valley and with telecom providers like EIR and the ESB. Council officials have also conducted an “on-the-ground assessment of telecommunications information” with locals and providers to assess a suitable location for the satellite receiving equipment. A pilot scheme to connect the service to a number of properties is close to being signed off, the Killarney Advertiser understands. It is hoped that existing infrastructure owned by EIR and ESB can be used to achieve this. “We expect delivery of the initial kit to commence in the next week and it is hoped to start providing a service shortly afterwards,” a Kerry County Council official told a recent online meeting of elected representatives from the Kenmare Municipal District.
Plunkett St to remain closed until October | By Sean Moriarty The controversial 'Safe Streets' town plan - introduced last summer to allow pedestrians walk the streets of Killarney in a socially-distanced manner - is set to be further extended until October 31. It involved the widening of footpaths on High St, New St and College St as well as the permanent closure to traffic in Plunkett St and Kenmare Place. The closure of Plunkett St has divided the opinion of politicians and residents for years. Some agree with the full-time closure of the street, while more are completely opposed to it and the current 'Safe Streets’ plan overrides a previous compromise where the street was closed to vehicles every day between 7pm and 7am.
The closure was introduced in July last year and was set to run until October. That was extended to allow for anticipated high footfall during the Christmas rush. It was further extended in the New Year as Ireland entered a pro longed Level 5 lockdown and to cover the Easter holiday period. With the current closure due to expire next week, Killarney Municipal District has further extended the closure until October 31 to allow for a predicated boom in the ‘staycation’ style tourism. “It is considered prudent to extend the temporary road closures on Plunkett Street and on the section of Kenmare Place to the end of the tourism season in Killarney, which will assist businesses in reopening and ensure that pedestrians can manoeuvre with the recommended social distancing advised,” a Council official told the Killarney Advertiser.

Surprise drive-by for Packie's 60th One local sports mad fan was left speechless at the weekend as friends surprised him with a drive-by to mark his 60th birthday. | By Michelle Crean It may not have been the celebration that Packie O'Connor had anticipated for his second lockdown birthday - but as it was a big one - his family and friends decided drive-by his house to mark the occasion. On Saturday morning, after enjoying a slap up fry with his wife Noreen, children Katie and Podge, and grandson Charlie (2) - Packie was called outside to "help a neighbour" in Marian Terrace. However, he got the surprise of his life as horns beeped and friends including Chairman Paul Sherry, Mary and Mikey Lyne, Jane and John O'Donoghue and their daughter Keelan, Jamie and Madeleine Spillane and many others from his favourite local club Killarney Celtic,
shouted and waved as they passed his house. "I told him to go outside at around 11am and said that a neighbour needed him," Katie told the Killarney Advertiser. "He got a hint then when the beeping happened." In normal times Packie, who is a former chairman of the club and currently over the field committee, would have had a party in town to celebrate the milestone day with everyone. "I think he enjoyed it just as much - he was thrilled." Packie, who is missing attending the matches, is keeping himself occupied on his new computer, a present he received from his family.
A brave shave for Fossa woman! | By Michelle Crean
Antonio's winning design a hit for local swim club | By Sean Moriarty Ballycasheen teenager Antoni Waberski has won Killarney Swimming Club’s art competition where club members were invited to design a new logo for their swimming hats.
They say your hair is your crowing glory and that's very much the case for one Fossa woman who plans to take the razor to it next week. 20-year-old Laura Whelton who works in MD O'Sheas is raising funds for the Kerry Rape & Sexual Abuse Centre (KRSAC). She has chosen to do this as an act of solidarity with all the women who have had so much stripped away from them through abuse or violence. Next Tuesday (April 6), Laura will bravely let her mom Fiona and brother Dara shave off her long locks live on Instagram. All funds raised will go directly to the charity - and for every €100 raised the invaluable service will be able to provide three crisis counselling sessions for survivors of sexual violence. "Women's rights have always interested me," Laura told the Killarney Advertiser. "After the reports of the Sarah Everard murder came out I wanted to do something. I feel so passionate about it." When described as brave by going through with such a dramatic change to her looks Laura explained that it's not her

Antonio, who is in Sixth Class at St Oliver’s School, is a member of Killarney Swimming Club’s C-Squad. With activities curtailed as result of COVID-19 restrictions the club wanted to do something to keep its members engaged in club life and came up with the ‘Design a Hat’ competition. Antonio’s design will now feature on all club member’s training hats once activities resume. “We are very proud,” his mother Aga told the Killarney Advertiser. “He has been very active, he is cycling and exercising every day and he practices his drum-kit a lot too. He has lots of stuff to do.” Killarney Swimming Club’s Brian O’Connor said he was delighted with Antonio’s effort that he described as a “wonderful design”. “Congratulations to Antonio, from our

Over €500k in funding announced for Kerry ETB Minister for Education and Kerry TD Norma Foley has this week welcomed a Government funding (DFHERIS) announcement of €507,500 for Kerry Education and Training Board (KETB) under the Devolved Capital Allocations for 2021.

€2k rowing target to assist local girl
The funding forms part of Project Ireland 2040 and will be provided via SOLAS for the delivery of small-scale and necessary infrastructure and improvement works, and for the purchase of equipment. Under this funding programme, ETBs will be in a position to make decisions around small-scale FET investment priorities locally, and to ensure that projects can be
advanced quickly and efficiently. The grant also allows ETBs an opportunity to consider future accommodation needs and to procure professional expertise to conduct condition surveys of existing buildings, with a view to a strategic approach to estate planning and development. In addition, funding has also been provided for the introduction of an emergency health and safety works programme. “This funding is a further endorsement of the importance of Further Education and Training,” Minister Foley said. “It will provide vital support to Kerry ETB as it enhances and develops the FET sector in the county.”
With a €2,000 target in their sights - the men of Flesk Valley Rowing Club are up for a mammoth charity half-marathon challenge this evening (Friday). | By Michelle Crean Members of the club, 15 in total, are determined to hit their fundraising target to help a four-year-old Killarney girl. The lads will be rowing individually on machines in their kitchens, bedrooms, attics and sheds, but together online aiming to cover 300km. Members plan to begin live online via the Flesk Valley Rowing Club's Facebook page at approximately 6pm - and while that's ongoing they're hoping to get public support behind them donating to the GoFundMe site which has already raised €1,800. The campaign is in support of local girl Alexis O’Mahony (4) who suffers with the rare primary metabolic condition Pyru-
vate Dehydrogenase Deficiency, and requires 24hr physical and intellectual care. One of the organisers Donal Kelly said the funds will hopefully help purchase a specialised physio table for her needs. "We had a number of machines in the club which we distributed last year," Donal told the Killarney Advertiser this week. "When we were training we got the notion to aim for a half marathon and when we were talking my brother Tadhg suggested doing it for Alexis. We got in touch with Pam Tracey and we went from there. I'd be hoping that we get over €2,000." To donate go to GoFundMe: Rowing 300km for Alexis and to watch live this evening go to their Facebook page: Flesk Valley Rowing Club.

Planning application lodged for 68 apartments | By Sean Moriarty A Cork city based construction company has lodged plans for 68 new apartments in Woodlands Industrial Estate with Kerry County Council. Carrig Property Platform Ltd wants to build a five-storey apartment block, totalling 68 units on the site of the old Ad-
vance Tyre depot in the estate. The site, which is on the edge of the Woodlawn Industrial Estate, is on a height and overlooks Killarney town centre and could offer views of the mountains and lakes. The planning application includes demolition of the existing tyre depot and associated car parking and other service facilities.
Outdoor dining grants set to revitalise tourism | By Sean Moriarty Killarney businesses will be able to apply to Kerry County Council for grants to encourage outdoor dining as part of a national programme to reopen the country. Hospitality sector business will be able to claim €4,000 or 75 percent of the cost of outdoor furniture like seating and tables and other fixtures like external heaters. It was announced earlier this week that a total of €17m is being made available nationally under a two-part scheme which will be delivered in partnership between
Fáilte Ireland and Local Authorities. Part One of the scheme will provide funding for individual tourism and hospitality businesses to develop and increase their own outdoor seating capacity. Funding allocated under Part Two will enable Local Authorities to develop permanent outdoor public dining spaces in towns and urban centres, similar to those that exist in various European cities. Cllr Michael Gleeson has previously called for such a public scheme to be created in Killarney and he pushed for this even before the pandemic brought the idea of outdoor dining to the fore.
“Prior to the abolition of town councils we looked at this a lot. A factory in Germany was visited but it all went on the backfoot,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “It is amazing how these things come the full circle and is back on the agenda again. I would welcome such a move, it would greatly enhance the ambience of our town for locals and visitors alike.” At the time of Gleeson’s first proposal in 2013 a local engineer, Paudie O’Mahoney, devised a plan to keep the rain off of tourists and locals alike. It included placing an ‘artificial roof’ over the streets of Killarney which can be re-
moved in the summer when the weather is nice and put back up when it’s raining. Kerry County Council’s Chief Executive Moira Murrell, is also Chair of the Rural Development, Community, Tourism, Culture and Heritage Committee, the national body behind the scheme. “We look forward to creating outdoor dining experiences around the country that not only benefit locals, but are also attractive to domestic and overseas visitors when the sector reopens," she said. "Developing outdoor infrastructure is a key element of answering the consumer demand for more flexible dining options.”

"Cancellations outweigh bookings" - bus operator | By Sean Moriarty A local coach tour operator has welcomed new Fáilte Ireland funding aimed at the tourism transport. Phillip O’Callaghan, who heads up family firm O’Callaghan Coaches, is hopeful that the new scheme will help tour operators survive as they face another season of effectively being off the road. Full details of the new scheme will be announced by Fáilte Ireland next Thursday, April 8. Mr O’Callaghan is a committee member of Coach Tourism and Transport Council of Ireland, the national representative body for the industry. Last year the council ringfenced €10 million for the sector though extensive Government lobbying. That money was allocated towards operators in the coach tourism industry but at the time did not include money for private operators like those involved in school runs or local community services like the transportation of local sports teams. O’Callaghan’s family firm covers both sectors of the coach industry and he is hopeful that a webinar on Thursday will give more clarity on the €55m in funding
"Nothing will happen until July" says local pub and hotel owner | By Sean Moriarty A Killarney publican says the Vintners’ Federation of Ireland is not strong enough in its dealings with Government compared to the lobby groups representing other sectors. Niall ‘Botty’ O’Callaghan, who runs the Fáilte Bar on High St, says the Government failed to address the concerns of the hospitality sector but he also pointed the finger of blame at the Vintners’ Federation of Ireland who he said “are simply not strong enough”. He believes that the bodies representing publicans, hoteliers and restaurateurs should unite to have a stronger voice when it comes to lobbying the Govern-
"The Government must trust people" TD Danny Healy-Rae raised the issue regarding opening of construction as well as small traders, shopkeepers and hairdressers in his Leaders Questions. “I wish to ask the Government to open up construction for all those who have
not been working for the past four or five months. For too long now some construction workers cannot go to work. Those involved in social housing can go to work." He said that the Government must trust people.
Minister Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media Catherine Martin announced this week. “Last year’s funding was a result of our lobbying and it was ring-fenced for the coach tour industry,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “There was nothing for the private hire operator. This is the first time Fáilte Ireland has given money without us lobbying for it.” He said it was a worrying time for the industry and without support like this many operators would “be gone under”. “This season is already wrote off, we are getting more cancellations than bookings,” he added. “We welcome the funding, we are different to other tourism operators, hotels and bars for example, our assets [buses and coaches] are depreciating just sitting here in the yard. We are just one local operator, drive past Deros or Kerry Coaches’ yard, they have a way more vehicles than us sitting idle. Apart from one or two school days we are doing nothing.” Full details and eligibly criteria for Fáilte Ireland’s Tourism Transport Business Continuity Scheme will be available on www.failteireland.ie from Thursday, April 8.
"People working on farm buildings can keep away from each other, as can people working on building a rural one-off house or a small estate. Other groups, such as small traders and shopkeepers, are also under severe pressure from multinational companies trading online. They
ment. “I am very disappointed with the Vintners [Federation],” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “The Government is ignoring them, but they are simply not strong enough either. The Government has successfully split their lobbying by creating the so-called wet and dry pubs scenario. The Vintners are on the bottom rung of the lobbying ladder.” Mr O’Callaghan, who is an elected member of Killarney Municipal District but was speaking as a business owner in Killarney, also slammed Taoiseach Micheál Martin’s approach to the whole hospitality sector. “He said he was going to look at hotels in June, that means first of all that nothing will happen in Killarney until at least July, but while he said he was looking at hotels he made no mention of the pubs.” will never be able to open up if this thing goes too far, and I am afraid that it is. Let us take hairdressers as an example. When they were allowed to open, they were very careful to just allow one person in at a time. We must be sensible and trust people to work. If this continues, I do not know who or what is going to pay for it. Are we going to lose all our workers to England?”

€10k funding mystery is no Fool’s Day joke | By Sean Moriarty
DONATION: Kilcummin locals handed over a cheque for €2,000 to the Kerry Hospice Foundation on Sunday, in memory of local man Derry O'Leary.
Funds raised in memory of much loved Kilcummin man | By Michelle Crean €2,000 was generously handed over to the Kerry Hospice Foundation (KHF) on Sunday morning all in memory of a much loved local man. Locals in the Village Inn Kilcummin held a sweepstake in memory Derry O'Leary (44) who sadly passed away last April from cancer. Derry, who was married to Helen, loved to go to Cheltenham every year which is why his friends decided to do a sweep-
stakes in his memory. "We raised a nice sum of money," his friend Diarmuid O'Donoghue told the Killarney Advertiser. The sweepstake was won by John Keogh from Killarney who gave it back which added to the final amount donated to charity. Described as a gentleman, Derry worked in Dawn Dairies in Killarney, and also loved the GAA, especially his local Kilcummin Club. It was decided to donate the funds to the KHF where Derry had received excellent care.
Nearly €10,000 has been allocated to repair a building of historic importance in Killarney but nobody seems to know where the money will be spent. Yesterday (Thursday), which just happened to be April Fool's Day, Minister of State for Heritage and Electoral Reform, Malcolm Noonan, announced funding totalling €72,000 under the ‘Built Heritage Investment Scheme’ for 14 Kerry projects. The funding is for the restoration of privately owned buildings that are of historical and architectural importance. Of the 14 Kerry properties listed, 11 of them have very specific addresses. These include funding for the ‘stabilisation of masonry’ at 6 Day Place, Tralee, the conservation of stained windows at St John the Baptist Church of Ireland, Knightstown, Valentia, and the roof repair of both Blackwater Cottage in Derrenafoyle and Kinard House in Ballinskelligs. “This will allow for essential renovations

Students awarded for self-sustainable school | By Michelle Crean
CLEAN UP: Hard working Junior Infants from Kilcummin NS with their big bags of litter last Thursday as part of their Green Schools/An Taisce Spring Clean Up Day.
Green is the colour for Kilcummin pupils!
From cleaning up to scooting along, children from Kilcummin NS have been working hard on their Green Schools campaign. | By Michelle Crean Last Thursday the whole school helped out and gathered as much rubbish as they could before the Easter break. And just recently they also took part in the annual Green Schools ‘Scoot on A Weekday’ (SOW). "This was yet another excellent Green Schools initiative led by our Deputy Principal, Mr. Murphy, and the Green Schools Committee," principal Gillian Sheehan told the Killarney Advertiser. "We were delighted with the whole school participation yet again this year, whilst adhering to COVID-19 restrictions. Each class was designated a location in and around the village of Kilcummin. A special word of thanks to Mr John Moriarty and all at the Rural Development Office for their support. Well done to the Green
Schools committee, the pupils and staff of Kilcummin NS on a wonderful clean up! Maith sibh go léir!"
SCOOTING ALONG
For ‘Scoot on A Weekday’ junior pupils brought a variety of scooters, bicycles and flickers to school to mark this very popular event, she added. "We were delighted with the turnout and were thrilled that all participating pupils wore their helmets. We are grateful for all the help that Angela Wall (An Taisce) has given us with our Green Schools initiatives, including SOW. Huge thanks to our Deputy Principal, Mr Murphy and the Green Schools committee for promoting this wonderful initiative at Kilcummin NS. This annual event is going from strength to strength and it was wonderful to hear happy children enjoying outdoor fun together!"
Local students who won the Senior Climate Change category in the ECO-UNESCO’s Young Environmentalist Awards were delighted to receive their certificate, trophy, and €100 One4all voucher recently. The students from St Brendan's College focused on the lack of awareness and action regarding climate change within their wider school community, and knew they had to do something about it. As a result, a small group of got together with a common goal of making their school community one that is self-sustainable and climate-friendly, and officially established a climate action group called ‘The Self-Sustainable Sem’. "With the support of the school's management team, Ms Niamh Sheehy, and our peers, we embarked on a journey of making our school more climate-friendly and self-sustainable," student Kacper Bogalecki told the Killarney Advertiser. As part of their initiative, the group entered the ECO-UNESCO’s Young Environmentalist Awards. "We were thrilled and honoured to hear that we had gone through to the ECODens, to the semi-finals, the finals, and onto winning the Senior Climate Change Award."
ACTION
The group's first action as the Self-Sustainable Sem was to organise a Climate Action Day in the wider school community. "For this event, we had planned several activities in hopes of raising awareness about problems surrounding our climate. These included a no single-use plastic day, keynote speakers, a park clean-up, and a stand-up initiative. We began working on various smaller tasks and actions in order to achieve and contribute to our overall goal of making our school climate friendly and self-sustainable. Throughout this endeavour, we’ve implemented and worked on the following initiatives: a uniform-renewal scheme, a schoolwide single-use plastic ban, a community garden for all the compost waste from our canteen, a new recycling system, an energy conservation initiative, an Instagram page for public awareness, as well as competing in the Friends of the Earth Ireland Solar Schools Competition where we topped the polls in the public vote in hopes of getting much needed solar panels for our school. Our climate action group has grown even stronger with this year’s Transition Year students continuing to work on the aforementioned initiatives making our school more climate-friendly and self-sustainable."

Evanescence - Bitter Truth Fans of American rock band Evanescence will be thrilled to hear that the band have released their new album 'Bitter Truth'. It's been almost a decade since album 'Fallen' which featured hit singles 'Bring Me to Life' and 'My Immortal' was released - 2003 to be precise, which won two Grammys and sold more than 17 million copies across the globe. Lead singer, Amy Lee, has explained why it took so long to release this album.
Professor Brendan Kelly is Professor of Psychiatry at Trinity College Dublin and Consultant Psychiatrist at Tallaght University Hospital in Dublin. In addition to his medical degree, he has master’s degrees in epidemiology, healthcare management, and Buddhist studies, and doctorates in medicine, history, governance, and law. He is the author of 'The Doctor Who Sat for a Year'. 'The Science of Happiness' is a relatively new area of scientific research and in this timely book, Professor Kelly sifts through the most up-to-date findings to arrive at a comprehensive set of principles and strategies that are scientifically proven to increase happiness levels. Firstly, he examines the global research that reveals current trends in happiness: for example, those with rightwing political views are happier than those on the left; having a baby increases your happiness levels for two years; 47 is the age of greatest unhappiness;
"The band has experienced a lot of grief, especially in the past few years. I lost my brother. Our bass player, Tim [McCord], their family lost a child. And then when the pandemic hit, it was like the whole world — all were experiencing loss. We were all feeling that end of the world kind of feeling. And suddenly I felt like the music was more important than ever, not just for me, but for our fans. And it really drove us and built a lot of fire in us."

Lilac prefers well draining light soil Nothing declares the promise of summer as well as the heady scent of the lilac flower. At the moment Syringa vulgaris is full of plump buds, very recognisable in their waxy greenness. Lilac bushes always remind me of bringing bunches of flowers into the nature table, or the May altar, in primary school. They are certainly a tree which goes a long way back in our collective memory, I think. The most common lilac tree is the Syringa vulgaris, a small tree, or large spreading shrub, which has heart-shaped leaves and large panicles of sweetly smelling mauve flowers. As a child I grew up in the midlands where the soil was alkaline, and everyone seemed to have one of these trees in the garden. They are very easy to grow, but do prefer neutral to alkaline soil, so if you find your tree is not growing too well, it may be worth doing a soil test, and adding some lime every year as you are fertilising. A lilac also prefers well draining light soil, as opposed to a heavy clay. Therefore mine is on a slight ditch where the drainage is good. Late frosts may damage the flower buds and young leaves, however the plant itself is hardy to -15 degrees. The flowers are produced on old wood and pruning is not really recommended. They tend to react to pruning by producing a lot of new shoots, creating a dense leafy plant with few flowers. However, if pruning is needed, it should be done immediately after flowering. Suckers should be removed as and when you see them. Some plants are inherited with a garden and they can be quite unruly. However, they are a longlived plant – a one hundred year old is not uncommon – so it is a shame to cut them down altogether. They can be pruned back hard to rejuvenate growth – but
only take a third of the stems away; in other words, it should take three years to rejuvenate and shape an old plant. Some of the best varieties to try are ‘Sensation’, which has deep pink flowers with a white edge, ‘Congo’ which flowers magenta from dark purple buds, ‘Primrose’ which has creamy coloured, highly scented flowers and ‘Mme Lemoine’ which has yellow buds opening to white double flowers. We may thank the Lemoine family, father Victoire and sons Emile and Henri, for cultivating more than two hundred different varieties from the late 1800s to the mid-1900s! While S. vulgaris might be the more common lilac, it is worth looking out for the ‘Bloomerang’ series, which come in a range of strong colours. These are ideal for the small garden as they only grow to 1.5m, and are repeat flowering. S. meyeri ‘Flowerfesta’ has more open smaller flowers, but produces masses of them. Flowerfesta come in many shades of pink, white and mauve, and are great for a border as they only grow to 1.25m. S. meyeri is also sometimes grafted onto a stem, making them a good choice for pots, or as a feature in a flower bed. Prune immediately after flowering to maintain a good shape. If using the flowers as cutflowers, cut panicles which have the bottom row of flowers just opening. It is best to cut them late in the evening, strip a little of the bark, or crush the end of the stem, and put into warm water to condition overnight. This will give the blooms added longevity, so you may enjoy them all the longer!

Bishop’s Easter message If I, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet, how much more should you wash each other’s feet? Jn 13:14 What a year! Together all of us have lived through a year of the Coronavirus, each has experienced it in our own unique circumstances. The winter months have been particularly difficult. The light and new green growth of spring time has never been so welcome, and it has coincided with the season of Lent. Let us keep our spirits up and encourage one another in following public health guidance. Thank God for the way so many people have been there for each other. Thank God for the way frontline workers have sacrificed themselves to provide essential services. We are full of gratitude and acknowledgement of how important it is to live lives of generous service. Individually we are at our best when our communities are at their best. With Government guidance at Level 5, and with a genuine concern that we could have another major wave of the virus ahead, it is understandable, but sad, that we have our Easter ceremonies without a congregation. It is a blessing that you can join in the ceremonies so easily from your home via modern technology. What we miss is the dual presence: the presence of the community gathered in church, and together receiving the Real Presence at the altar.
HERE ARE THREE POINTS TO REFLECT ON THIS EASTER 2021
This Holy Week and Easter, joining in Mass from home, seek nourishment at the table of God’s word. The introduction to the Roman Missal speaks of the Liturgy of the Word at Mass: “When the Sacred Scriptures are read in church, God himself speaks to his People, and Christ, present in his own word, proclaims the Gospel” (29). When you go forth from the Easter ceremonies carry words from the scriptures in your heart: the Last Supper, ‘you should wash each other’s feet’; the commemoration of the Passion, ‘This is my body, given up for you’; Easter morning, ‘You are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified, He is risen …’. This year has reminded us that home is where we pray each day. Home is the place where we first received our faith and where we live it. In the home God is present with us. Prayer in the home is the time we spend turned towards God talking to him about our lives and asking his help; giving praise and thanks; asking forgiveness and renewing our trust. Has prayer in the home helped you and your family over the past year?
It will be a great blessing if, when this virus is finally a memory, we have a new awareness of prayer in the home. A word of thanks to our priests and deacons, and all who have contributed to the life of our parishes over the past year. A word of thanks to our schools for the great work they have done. A word of encouragement to all young people looking forward to First Confession, First Communion or Confirmation. We cannot make any plans until we know when we will have congregations in church. The situation is disappointing, but the ceremonies will be worth waiting for. Another group who have suffered are the Leaving Cert students. May they trust that all will be well and, come the autumn, they will be satisfied with the options that come their way. Thank you to all who have continued to contribute to parish funds and the parish dues for our priests. Keep up the good work. Priests have been greatly encouraged by your faithfulness. Please remember other local charities and voluntary bodies over the Easter season, so much fundraising has not been possible. All need funds to pay for the basics like insurance, heating, and the overheads of an office. Please, let us not forget the Lenten campaign of Trócaire. If the Coronavirus has been hard on us, how much more difficult has it been for the communities Trócaire supports? Finally, every time we pray over the Easter season let us all, people and priests, remember the deceased of the past year, and their grieving loved ones. Have a comforting word for the bereaved when you meet. In this world and in the next our hope is in Christ: “Christ is Risen, alleluia”. Be assured of my prayers.

Remember the value of what you're paying for Last weekend I had my lockdown haircut. It’s an inconvenient necessity, but an arduous one for all concerned. Neither the amateur barber nor the recipient is happy to be there. It inevitably leads to tensions, frustrations and some arguing! You see, right now we’re all having to neglect or take a crash course in some of life’s necessities, and in some instances do a makeshift job to tide us over which got me thinking about the services we all use and the value we ascribe to them. It’s not until we cannot avail of the previously common services that we understand just how valuable they are. When I sit on my barber’s chair for the 30 minute haircut every month or so, or when ladies sit on their hairdresser's chair for sometimes up to three hours we think that is the service we are paying for - time. Yes, in some ways you are paying for the professional’s time there and then, but what you are really paying for is their time spent to get to this point. The countless hours of study, continuous professional development and courses they have gone on, the mannequin heads they have practised on to save you the marital stress and hardship of one slipped or heavy hand! That is the value of the service you are
paying for, not the time there and then. I’ve had many conversations with potential clients of mine who have said; “I can go to someone else who is cheaper”. Of course you can, but the value of what you are paying for should be linked to the price you pay. Often in health and fitness the barrier to entry is low and it becomes a race to the bottom to offer cheaper and cheaper services, but often what you are getting is a really poor quality product and service; no experience, no countless hours spent studying and continually developing and you end up paying for the professional's time there and then, not the time spent to get to this point and ultimately you are less likely to receive the results you want. Right now in the middle of lockdown I’ve seen people say “exercise is free”, “just go out and go for a walk”. It’s akin to shouting from the shoreline to someone who can’t swim to “just paddle harder to the shore!” Yes, exercise is free, so are haircuts, but I know as soon as my barber reopens I’ll gladly pay for a professional who has experience and knowledge in the field to do the job right and give me the result I want. KNOW YOUR RIGHTS
Benefits for carers
QUESTION: I need to take time out from work to care for my father. What supports are available for people in my situation? ANSWER: There are several supports available to you. To qualify for these supports, the person you are caring for (your father) must need full-time care and attention. If you are working at present and want to take time off to care for your father, you may be eligible for carer’s leave of up to two years. You must have worked for your employer for a continuous period of 12 months to qualify for this leave. Your employer does not pay you while you are on carer’s leave but you can get credited social insurance contributions to maintain your PRSI record. You are entitled to annual leave and public holidays for the first 13 weeks of carer’s leave. Your employer cannot dismiss you or victimise you for exercising your right to carer’s leave. You may also be able to get Carer’s Benefit from the Department of Social Protection, if you have enough PRSI contributions to qualify. If you do not qualify for Carer’s Benefit, you may qualify for a means-tested Carer’s Allowance. If you get Carer’s Allowance, you may be entitled to a Free Travel Pass. If you live with the person
you are caring for, you may also qualify for the Household Benefits Package. There is also an annual Carer’s Support Grant which is paid to full-time carers in June each year. From June 2021, the grant will increase from €1,700 to €1,850. Even if you are not getting any other social welfare payment, you can qualify for this grant if you meet the conditions. You can find more information about support for carers on citizensinformation.ie. ___________________________________________________ During COVID-19, you can find comprehensive integrated information online at citizensinformation.ie/covid19/ and you can get daily updates on what’s changed on Twitter at @citizensinfo. SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL Return to career research

Night-time skincare The skin repairs and restores itself when the body is sleeping which is exactly why it's the perfect time to treat any issues. Whether it’s in your 20s struggling with oily skin, in your 30s dealing with dark spots, or in your 40s with distressed over dried skin, then using a thick nighttime cream is ideal to help with any issues. Night creams are often thicker than daytime moisturisers. Clients often ask if they can use their day cream at night - but the answer is no if it contains an SPF. Some are 24 hour creams, but now and again add in a specific night cream for extra help. Night creams contain ingredients that can be exfoliating such as alpha hydroxy acids and retinols, which is why night creams should never be used during the day. Sleep is when the skin does the heavy work, so night-time products maintain healthy skin and reduce signs of ageing.
It’s when your skin works to restore and repair which is why night creams focus on moisture and recovery. The intensity of the ingredients keeps skin looking more youthful for longer. Sothys detoxifying Resurfacing Overnight Cream is a fantastic treatment while you sleep. For €77 it packs a powerful punch. Full of vitamin C for brightening, AHA for exfoliating and hyaluronic acid for hydration, it has a winning combination. Sothys have introduced an amazing product for overnight use. It’s a resurfacing overnight mask you put on every week. It's easy to apply and absorbs into the skin as you sleep. It's also full of antioxidants with six different hyaluronic acid molecules which are absorbed at different levels allowing huge hydration. I have used these masks and it’s like a facial in a packet. It’s so easy to use, with absolutely amazing results. Sothys detoxifying night mask pack of eight is €44.

Leaving Cert students are busy over the Easter holidays preparing for orals and practicals, as well as trying to focus on study and revision. It is a great idea to allow some time in your schedule to return to your research on courses, colleges and careers. The process is different for everyone. Some of you have a clear idea of what pathway you would like to take, others have no idea. If you don’t know, don’t panic, you still have lots of time. There is so much choice out there now that it is easy to get confused and feel overwhelmed. There are lots of great resources available to help you on this journey towards making effective career choices and lots of routes that will take you to the career you really want if you don’t manage to get into it directly.
SELF ASSESSMENT
If you are still unsure about what you want to do or what might suit you, start with some self-assessment. While they don’t give you a definite answer as to particular careers or courses you should choose, they will give you plenty of suggestions that you can research further. Think of them as part of the jigsaw. You will find a range of skills, interests and personality trait tests, all of which are free, on www. careersportal.ie, www.qualifax.ie, www. yooni.ie and on the Exit Entry App. By completing them you will get suggestions for sectors, career areas and courses that match your responses. They will generally include a variety of CAO courses at levels 6, 7 and 8, Post Leaving Cert (PLC) courses in Colleges of Further Education, apprenticeships and traineeships, which you can then filter down.
HAVE A PLAN A, B AND C
If you have an idea of what pathway you would like but are concerned about a potential rise in CAO points, now is the ideal time to look at your backup plans. Remember we won’t know the points for 2021 until the Round 1 offers come out after the Leaving Cert results and that is completely out of your control. What is within your control however is making sure you have a plan A, B and C. Cover all bases by filling up all 20 choices on your CAO form. The CAO Change of Mind facility opens on May 5 and you will be able to make changes up to July 1. Apply for PLCs (www.fetchcourses.ie) and explore the

ever growing number of choices on www. apprenticeships.ie. Consider applying to college in Europe where applications are still open. You will find helpful information on www.eunicas.ie and www.medicalpoland.ie. While the deadline for most courses in the UK has closed you may apply to www.ucas.com later in the summer when they open their clearing system. Be rigorous in your research at this stage. Examine closely the detail of all courses, particularly the entry requirements, modules throughout the course, work placement, study abroad options and career opportunities. Many colleges are running one to one Q&A sessions for prospective students which you book online, and recordings from virtual open day talks as well as virtual campus tours are available on college websites. As well as the sites mentioned above you can also check out specific career and college application webinars on www.synergycareers.ie. Take a look at an extensive selection of very informative and short video guides on www.classroomguidance.ie. Explore a variety of really helpful career guidance podcasts on Instagram from @leavingcertguidance, @farrellycareerguidance, and @yooni.ie. It is also a great idea to check in with your guidance counsellor in school early in the next term to clarify any confusion, answer your questions and to reassure you that there is a life after the Leaving Cert and an exciting one at that!

Late Late Show raises incredible €2.6m for vital cancer service Viewers of Friday night's Late Late Show special for Daffodil Day raised an incredible €2.6m which will go towards vital services for cancer patients and crucial research. “We want to express our sincere heartfelt gratitude to all the generous donors who gave such phenomenal support, and to Ryan and the whole Late Late show team for putting on a brilliant show," CEO of the Irish Cancer Society, Averil Power, said.

It is all about me! It seems that former president and ungrateful loser Donald Trump just cannot get enough of himself. Last week he was invited to give a speech at a wedding and he somehow managed to turn that into a self-proclamation of greatness.
Jon Arrigo and Megan Noderer were married on Saturday. The reception took place at Trump’s Mar-A-Lago resort in Florida where he has been hiding out since failing to get re-elected. The happy couple thought it would be a good idea to invite Trump to say a few words at the reception - one to show the
Staff at Ecuador's Galapagos Islands Airport found the reptiles individually wrapped in plastic inside the luggage. Sadly 10 of them died. Airport manager Jorge Rosillo believes that the tortoises were intended to be shipped to Guayaquil Airport on mainland Ecuador for the "trafficking of species" saying that some species were "really sought after in the Asian market". The surviving tortoises, which originated from the Galapagos Islands, have been placed in the care of a team from the Galapagos National Park. In a tweet Aeropuerto Ecológico de Galápagos said that "the turtles were immobilized with plastic, they were detected by our X-ray equipment inside a red suitcase". Ecuador's Environment Minister Marcelo Mata denounced the traffickers in a tweet. "These are crimes against the fauna and natural heritage of Ecuadorians," he said, calling on authorities to punish those responsible "with all the rigour provided for by the regulations in force".
grandchildren and all of that. But instead of wishing the couple all the best for the future he used it as an opportunity to launch an attack on Joe Biden and criticise the work the new president and his new administration has done since taking office. To be fair to Trump, he did toast the newlyweds, but his well-wishes came at around the 17-minute mark of the 20-minute speech. One for the grandkids, indeed!

Global shipping could take months to resolve! It could take weeks or even months for global shipping to get back on track after a massive ship got stuck in the Suez Canal - delaying others for up to a week. Hundreds of ships were able to continue on their journey again on Monday after the 400m-long 200,000-tonne 'Ever Given' ship was freed. It had become lodged sideways blocking the canal last week following bad weather conditions. The ship's containers were carrying a
huge variety of items with an insured value believed to be in the hundreds of millions of dollars. On Monday, with the help of dredgers, the Ever Given was finally refloated which allowed hundreds of other smaller vessels to also pass through. However, it was a costly pause in transit as although initially the smaller ships cleared the way in three days, experts believe the knock-on effect on global shipping could take weeks or even months to resolve.
World leaders plan new international health treaty The World Health Organization has joined with leaders of 23 countries to come up with an idea to create an international treaty that would help the world deal with future health emergencies. Such a treaty, which was first pre-empted by chairman of the European Union leaders, Charles Michel, at a G20 summit last November, would ensure universal access to vaccines, medicines and diagnostics for pandemics.
Leaders of Fiji, Portugal, Romania, Britain, Rwanda, Kenya, France, Germany, Greece, Korea, Chile, Costa Rica, Albania, South Africa, Trinidad and Tobago, the Netherlands, Tunisia, Senegal, Spain, Norway, Serbia, Indonesia, Ukraine and the WHO have given the plan formal backing. "We believe that nations should work together towards a new international treaty for pandemic preparedness and response," they said in a joint statement.
As part of an ongoing investigation in the Kerry Division, Gardaí from the Kerry Divisional Drugs Unit executed a search warrant at a house in the Duagh area of Listowel. During the course of the search Gardaí seized €4,000 of suspected cannabis plants inside a growhouse that was utilising heaters and fans. Gardaí also seized €3,200 of suspected cannabis herb. All of the suspected drugs will now be sent to Forensic Science Ireland for analysis. A man, aged in his 40s, was arrested on March 28 and detained at Listowel Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984. He has since been charged and is due to appear before Listowel District Court on April 15.
RIAI architects launch annual charity initiative Ireland's architects are ready to offer professional advice on your home improvements and it is all in aid of the Simon Communities. The RIAI and the Simon Communities are calling on members of the public to support the annual RIAI Simon Open Door campaign from Tuesday, May 4 to Friday, May 14. In return for a €95 donation, homeowners can receive an hour-long consultation with an RIAI-registered architect to discuss building, rebuilding or renovating their homes. All consultations take place online and all funds raised go directly to the Simon Communities to support their work in tackling homelessness.
“RIAI Simon Open Door is the perfect opportunity for homeowners to get professional advice from a Registered Architect on how to achieve a more flexible home for the times we live in," Ciaran O’Connor, RIAI President said. The support received from the campaign in 2020 enabled the Simon Communities to provide essential resources to respond to COVID-19, most critically by helping to fund supplies of PPE and to address the increased demand for Simon Communities services across the country. Registration for the event is now open and people are encouraged to book a consultation by visiting www.simonopendoor.ie.

Around one hundred boxes filled with items to reduce the negative effects of

Kevin Coyne gets rare World Championship opportunity A change in the British Superbike Championship’s (BSB) calendar has given local motorcycle racer Kevin Coyne a rare chance to compete at World Championship level. Organisers of the BSB have elected to delay the season start from late May until June 27 to allow spectators attend championship races. The change meant that the 18-round

series is now condensed into six triple header points scoring meetings for the main category. There is simply not enough room on each of the event’s schedules to accommodate all of the series’ support classes. The British round of the World Superbike Championship will take place on July 4. It was originally set to be a standalone event but race organisers have agreed to include some of the BSB’s orphaned classes. This includes Coyne’s National Superstock 600cc class and he now has the opportunity to share paddock space with some of the biggest names in the sport. The local teenager will now compete at the same meeting as Northern Ireland’s Jonathan Rea who will be searching for a seventh successive world title this season. “It is hard to believe that we are going to be racing alongside the likes of Jonathan Rea,” his father Mark said. “It is a great opportunity to show what he can do in front of people like that. And at Donington too, it is a track he likes.” Coyne is stepping up to the National Superstock 600cc class after a year racing in the British Junior Championship. His entry for the 2021 season was accepted by series organisers last week and that is when they informed him that there was going to be changes to the original calendar.

Armstrong – O’Sullivan split Junior World Rally Championship frontrunner Jon Armstrong has praised his Killarney co-driver Noel O’Sullivan after the pair announced this week that they were going their separate ways after six years working together. Entries for this year’s Junior World Rally Championship closed on Tuesday and Armstrong has placed an entry. However, the Northern Irish driver has nominated British co-driver Phil Hall for the season ahead which gets underway in Croatia later this month. Armstrong and Muckross man O’Sullivan first worked together in 2015 when they tackled the Northern Irish championship alongside some European championship events in a Peugeot 208. They made their World Rally Championship debut in Spain the same year. An extended Junior WRC programme the following season netted several international class wins and the junior title. Budget constraints meant they followed a limited international programme in
2017 and they sat out 2018. A top 10 finish in the Galway International Rally in 2019 was backed up with victory on the Down Rally. Last year the pair started the Junior World Series in Sweden before COVID-19 took hold and put a stop to international travel. “It was great to work with Noel over the years as we both grew together from clubmen to winners at world level. It was great to achieve those results and I will always have fond memories of those times,” said Armstrong. “Drivers and co-drivers [combinations] change a lot but I was proud to have a long-lasting relationship with Noel beside me.” O’Sullivan, who also started last year’s British Rally Championship alongside Welsh driver Osian Pryce, wished Armstrong the best for the season ahead. “Jon and I had great success at home and abroad over the last number of years. We won and lost together. I wish him the very best of luck for the future,” he said. "An end is only a beginning in disguise.”

Organic Farming Scheme for Kerry farmers
Kerry farmers considering an application to the Organic Farming Scheme have until April 30 to do so, following the re-opening of the scheme earlier this month with an additional budget of €4 million for 2021. This additional funding was confirmed by Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Senator Pippa Hackett when she confirmed the continuation of the scheme last month. 1,460 farmers participated in the last scheme, and it is envisaged that approximately 500 more may be successful in their application this spring. Payments of up to €220 per hectare are available for farms undergoing conversion to full organic status, a process that takes two years, or €170 per hectare for farms that have obtained that status. Higher payment rates are available for organic horticulture and tillage farmers. All applications must be processed through agfood.ie.

The best year for markets since the 1930s Investors have endured a tough time lately, and while broad market returns were in the green last week, volatility remained front and centre. Market Review The S&P 500 gained 1.6% as a late Friday surge put the index within touching distance of its mid-February high. The tech slip continued as the NASDAQ composite index finished the week down 0.6% as investors continue the rotation trade out of last year’s big winners. Some investors remain perplexed by the recent tech sell-off, but after some epic gains over the past year, perhaps we shouldn’t be too surprised that certain sectors of the market are taking a breather. Global cases of the Coronavirus rose for the fifth straight week. The death toll continued to accelerate, with India and Brazil experiencing their worst periods of the pandemic to date. Equities: While tech and small cap trailed last
week, US large-cap value stocks outperformed growth stocks for the seventh week in a row. The Russell 1000 Value Index, which includes energy, banks and industrial stocks, has gained more than 10% this year, outperforming its counterpart, the Russell 1000 Growth Index, which is just above break-even for the year. Bond Yields: Following weeks of sizeable yield jumps, the 10 Year Treasury fell from 1.72% to 1.67% this week. This deceleration in yields has halted the reflation trade that pushed energy and financial stocks higher in recent weeks. However, many bond traders remain concerned about the potential for current and future stimulus packages and pent-up household spending to create further inflationary pressures over the coming months. Market Outlook: There has been a lot of market conversation around recent volatility and sell-offs across various sectors, but I think it is vital to take a step back to regain some perspective and perhaps curb investors’

enthusiasm following a record-breaking 12 months. The S&P 500 has just experienced its best one-year return since the 1930s, up 75% from the low point of the pandemic. While there are still high odds of gains in the next year, the rate of return will likely become much more ‘normal’ (8% historical average since inception). It is also important to understand that given the current high valuations, drawdowns
and periods of volatility are inevitable, especially across sectors that have seen spectacular growth. Short-term market moves are notoriously hard to predict, and with ongoing uncertainty around the economic reopening and rising COVID-19 cases, forecasting has become even more uncertain. With that said, the strong economic growth readings in the US, fuelled by massive stimulus along with a relatively good vaccine rollout, offers a more positive outlook for US equities relative to global equities in the near term. Investors are still not getting paid for duration or credit risk in the bond market, so longer-term bonds offer little upside potential. If you need fixed income exposure to offset some growth assets, short-intermediate term, high-quality bonds would be the preferred option. And as for the value versus growth debate, the recent tech sell-off does not suggest that all tech stocks are out of favour; it simply highlights a broader appetite to diversify across both growth and value.
Safety tips from farm insurance expert Sandra Lucey Did you know that almost one third of all deaths at work occur at farms? The main causes of death in agriculture over the past 10 years are incidents involving tractors, farm vehicles and machinery. Incidents involving livestock accounts for nearly 16% followed by falls at 10%. According to the Health and Safety Authority, a farmer is seven times more likely to be killed at work compared to other workers in any other business. The elderly and young children are particularly at risk of being injured or killed.
HERE ARE SOME BRIEF SAFETY TIPS • Tractors and Machinery Only allow competent persons to drive tractors. A young person must be at least 14-years-old to operate a tractor on the
farm, and over 16 years of age to do so on public roads. Proper driving instruction must be given and supervision must be in place. Children under 14 should not ride in a tractor unless they are strapped into a properly designed seat inside the cab. When using machinery do not allow operators with loose clothing or long hair near rotating shafts. Fit guards to PTO shafts, rotating shafts and rotating ancillary equipment such as slip clutches and so on. • Livestock Always handle animals with caution and use proper handling facilities. When moving livestock on a public roadway, warning signs should be erected. Vehicles and equipment should comply with the requirements of the road traffic acts. • Public Safety Ensure that all slurry tanks and lagoons
are covered or fenced in safety. Make sure all your fencing and gateways to public roadways are secure and that livestock cannot escape into public roadways. Take extra precautions with livestock and machinery when any member of the public visits your farm and make sure they leave your farm safely. • Health and Safety Statement Complete a farm safety risk assessment document and a safety statement and ensure everybody who works on the farm reads and understands it. The statement will identify dangerous activities, outline the safety measures that need to be implemented and can be amended to your individual needs. The Health and Safety Authority (HSA) can be found on www.hsa.ie or contact info@healyinsurances.ie and we can forward you a farm safety guide. At Healy Insurances we have access to

Do we need to rethink house design to reflect changing times? Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic many of our homes have also become our place of work. However, the design and layout of a home is very different to that of an office. One of the probable long-term changes we will experience as an outcome of the pandemic will be more flexibility shown by employers when it comes to working from home. Indeed, this trend is becoming increasingly evident in particular locations around the country and Killarney is certainly one such place and why wouldn’t it be? So, we ask the question: do we now need to rethink traditional house design to reflect changing times and trends? Many new homes schemes nationwide have already considered the lack of space for remote working and have in-
corporated second living spaces. The modern open plan property has been put to the test over the course of the past 12 months, particularly for larger families. How many of our teens have had to retract to their bedrooms because there simply is not enough space to get away from parents and siblings? Location remains the optimum consideration when deciding where to live, but will our location criteria change? Pre-COVID-19 the predominant factors were proximity to work, schools, shops, public transport. Post-COVID-19 we ask is this what we really want? Have we learned to appreciate other aspects of life which we may previously have been missing out on? Would it be nice to live near a river, lake, forest, by the sea or in the countryside? Remember there are shops and schools everywhere
and while one may have to travel to work, it may not be necessary all of the time. It is likely a large cohort of people will be able to strike a balance between working from home and attending the workplace, allowing more time to enjoy life’s simple pleasures while also improving productivity. Of course, for those in the market to buy currently, considerations will be highly dependent of their stage of life. Young professionals are likely to seek urban centre locations for the lifestyle: the convenience of walking to the workplace and more for socialising, shopping etc. Second time buyers with young families are more likely to look at out of town or suburban locations for that extra bit of internal and indeed external space. Second hand homes in the country or suburbs are a consideration for this cohort as they

look for expandability and more outdoor space. On the other hand, those trading down may well look for convenience and accessibility in or close to the urban centres. Small niche developments or apartments are likely to attract the trader downers with parking and lift access being a priority.

Seamus, I visited your sacred space today, not too far away It breaks my heart in two and I still can’t believe it is dedicated to you. But God only takes the best You were someone who loved to bring a smile as you went on your way. And never failed to brighten up A dark and gloomy day And when you left this world, it seemed As if the stars had all gone out.
Seamus you were my favourite Hello but my hardest goodbye.

in conversation with DONIE SHEAHAN Queen Victoria visited Killarney in 1861 and stayed in Killarney House on August 26. It is unlikely that Queen Elizabeth II will retrace her steps, considering COVID-19 and of course the fall-out from the revelations in the Oprah interview with Megan and Harry. Instead, she may pick up the phone and ring Donie Sheehan, a prominent Killarney man, born on April 21 1926 - the same day as herself. If she doesn’t, Donie may well ring her! Knowing his ability to get through all kinds of restrictions and protocol at
Croke Park and elsewhere, he’s well capable of ringing Buckingham Palace to mark their 95th birthdays. I spoke to Donie at great length earlier this week, however COVID-19 restrictions prevented us from having an interview in the flesh, as we have done so often over the decades.
WHAT I MISS First off Donie, happy 95th birthday greetings and how are you dealing with
this virus which is preventing everyone from living their normal lives? His voice was as vibrant as ever and he engaged fully in our long conversation. “Well I am very good and I am lucky that I have got the jab twice and that is a great relief. However, I must say that I have been here in the house in Lewis Road for over a year now and I miss the old life I had. I am lucky to have some of my family and grandchildren in Killarney and they are great, as well as friends who ring me.”
was always a great man to be around the town meeting people and chatting with them. I worked hard all my life and met an awful lot of people and even in recent years I always walked to 10am Mass in the Friary and all that was good for my physical and mental health. You’d be meeting people and that is so important. Even with the vaccine I am still nervous about going out. When the Government opens up the country we can follow the football and the horses once more.”
BUT WHAT DO YOU MISS?
How about rolling back the years Donie, for readers of On the Ball.

Jehr O‘Leary, Dr Eamonn O’Sullivan), Tadhgie Lynes, Dinso Hurley and Denis ‘Fox’ Collins. They’re all gone now, God be good to them, they were all great Crokes people.
1973
“Is it that long ago? It was about this time of the year it started. I was a great friend of Danny Casey. He had the insurance business up there in the Central Club in College Street, near Jimmy Gleeson’s. He was a great man to start it and it was only a few weeks old and I remember one Sunday night he called in for a chat. As usual there were a few of us talking in my place in Main St and I said to Danny that what he was doing was great, but there was no sport in it. I know Michael ‘Coiny’ O’Connor, Murt Galvin and someone else, maybe Haulie Keogh was there for the usual post mortems on the day’s matches. So we all told him that sport was so important in Killarney that it should be in every edition. We said, we have someone for you now to do that. You had just returned to Killarney from Dublin to teach in the old Vocational School in New Street. The sport started as ‘Around the Clubs’ for a few weeks with someone [Seán O'Donoghue and Frank Moynihan] and you came in then with On the Ball. It’s there ever since.
NATIVE OF LISTOWEL
Donie Sheahan [or Shay- Han to give it the correct North Kerry twang] was born in Listowel on April 26,1926 and grew up and attended school there and went on to the College of Pharmacy in Dublin where he qualified as a pharmacist. “At that time, though you were qualified, you had to serve your time working with chemists around the country. I spent four years doing that and everywhere I went I tried to get the football going. I was stone mad for football. I had played at home with Listowel and I was only 16 when I played on the Listowel senior team, along with my brother Tommy, the vet. I had a job in Thurles, the birthplace of the GAA and tried to get football going. They had no interest in football, it was all traditional hurling. I persevered and got junior football going, but I knew that as soon as I left they would all go back to the hurling. “I also had a great stint in Dundalk and played with St Mary’s. We had a very good team and we won the Louth senior football county championship. Football was still very strong in Louth at the time. They had great games with Kerry to make money to buy Croke Park around the time of the 1916 Rising. The best player we had in St Mary’s was Paddy Markey, a right good footballer.

opened Sheehan’s Pharmacy at 34 Main Street and it is there ever since, now headed up by his son, Liam. “I joined the Crokes and have been with them ever since in all different ways, first as player in the '40s. My neighbour was the great ‘Small Jehr’. I won a Kerry Senior Football Championship with the Clear Air Boys [Dick Fitzgerald’s] in 1951, but the Crokes’ Club did not dominate in East Kerry or Kerry at that time despite the great efforts of John Moynihan. He was a great clubman and during the War [World War II ended September 2, 1945] everything was scarce and often Jon Moynihan used to go down to The Sem boarders and get a loan of a few pair of boots for our lads. He was president of the club for many years up to his death. I was delighted for him to see the Crokes’ glory days winning seven Kerry Senior Football Championship in 10 years and the Andy Merrigan Cup – the All-Ireland SFC for clubs.
WHATEVER WAS NEEDED
When your playing days were over with Dr Crokes what roles did you play in the club? “Whatever was needed, I did everything. I was chairman for 20 years I’d say and even if we didn’t win a lot it all came good when we won the O’Donoghue Cup in 1956. Paddy ‘Bomber’ O’Shea was captain and were the masters of seven–a-sides which were very popular at that time, especially in Sneem. On those teams we had, Jackie, Coiny, Teddín O’Connor, Johnny Hurley, Con Clifford and then younger fellows like Long John McCarthy, Socky Lynch, he was a tough bit of stuff, Tadhgie Fleming and Gerald Cullinane. Sure we took off from there. We had Jackie Looney a great player, a Kerry Junior and he played at wing-forward
with the Munster Colleges team, some achievement at that time when the best of the colleges’ players were selected for Munster. He also did fantastic work with the juveniles along with Gerald Cullinane. I got Tom Long to play for the Crokes when he came down from Dublin to teach here and he was as strong as a horse, a fierce man to get goals. Himself and Tadhgie Lyne were great club and county players. Jackie and Con Clifford held the record for winning 10 O’Donoghue Cups. I think Gooch and Eoin Brosnan won 11 in later years. I remember 1956 very well. I was a selector with Denis Counihan and Denis ‘Fox’ Collins. Liam Carbury was in goal and he saved a penalty from Paddy Culligan. That was important as the final score was small (1-3 to 1-1) to beat the Legion. Dr Crokes won nine out of the next 10 O‘Donoghue Cups, all except 1963, when Rathmore triumphed.”
MICHAEL COINY
“Michael Coiny was great for the club when he came to teach in Anabla in the '50s. He was a great player and secretary, such a hard worker for the club and later with the Park [Fitzgerald Stadium Secretary]. He was secretary of the club and was the main organiser of our 70th anniversary social in 1956. I was chairman of the club and the patron at that time was Bishop Moynihan. We had so much to celebrate at that special social in the old Glebe Hotel, now gone. It was special to have Martin Kissane present, a surviving member of the foundation of the club in 1886. Other great Crokes people I remember from that night were Nellie Myers Kavanagh, Dan Kavanagh, Timmy Keogh, Denis Counihan, Paddy and Joan Sexton, Murt Galvin, Paddy MacMonagle, Kathleen MacMonagle, Peggy and Paddy Looney, Br Justin, Dicko Clifford, Conno Healy, Small
Donie you were no stranger to controversy. “How’s that?" I remember watching Dr Crokes play John Mitchels in a Kerry county championship match in the Park on a very wet day late in the year, where the goalmouths were covered with sawdust (no longer needed with the Prunty pitch). That was in the early '60s. Cushen (Con Casey) was in goal for the Crokes and Mitchels were the dominant team in Kerry in that era, backboned by the three Sheehy brothers, as well as by Derry and Thorny O’Shea who would steal a goal out of nothing, Alan Conway, Dowdy [Teddy Dowd] and many more. Denis Counihan and you were in your usual positions up and down the pitch well inside the side-line urging on the players. A shemozzle led to fisticuffs and all hell broke loose. The two of you went right into the middle of the fracas. The game was abandoned by the referee John Joe Sheehy [father of Niall, Seán Óg and Briansy], who was president of the county board at that time. “Yes and at the county board meeting after that match he brought up the issue and blamed the Crokes for starting the fight. I was the Crokes’ delegate and told them in no uncertain terms that there were two clubs in it. I apologised for Denis Counihan and for myself explaining why we went into the middle of the field to make the peace. It was all over ‘The Kerryman’ on the following Friday. I was going up High Street and across the street came Denis Counihan; he lambasted me for offering an apology for him. Sure all I was doing was making the peace for everyone.
MORE NEXT WEEK
That clues me in to horse racing, your other great sporting interest. “I’m not finished with football at all before we go into the horses. More to come next week on Donie’s recollections of card games three nights a week, training East Kerry to the victory in the first ever All-Ireland Club Football title, Kerry selector with Mick O’Dwyer. Also his grandson is making big waves in rugby with underage international caps and basketball with UCD Marian Dublin. The attraction of Cheltenham and being a successful owner with great horses such as 'For Bill', 'For William', 'Lady Rebecca', 'Dromhale Lady' and many more, all trained by Michael Hourigan. There will also be comments from his son Liam and grandson Dónal. He also talks about a call to the Dáil with John O’Grady. All next week.

Fergal Moynihan named as Legion's Person of the Year Outgoing Legion GAA Club Chairman Fergal Moynihan was named as the winner of the Cooper Cup during this year’s Legion GAA Club’s annual awards – an event that took place remotely this time around. Fergal has recently completed his term as Chairman of the club and handed the reins over to David Randles. Fergal has been an ever present and active member, player and administrator with the club. He was a great player and played at all levels with distinction winning honours at underage and senior level with the club. On retiring from playing, Fergal joined the ranks of the club's coaching academy for juvenile players under John Culloty and later Seanie Culloty. He then took over the running of this academy from Seanie and immediately pulled together a leadership team under a strategy for the future development and growth. “This is the hallmark of Fergal’s philosophy and professionalism which he brings to all aspects of his life’s tasks. Fergal’s leadership skills were very evident and he was asked to take on the mantle of Chairman in mid-2017,” said club PRO
Elaine O’Donoghue. “Fergal brought vigour and energy, coupled with an intelligent grasp of how to govern and run the club. He communicated the new strategy very effectively to all members over several meetings and it was enthusiastically adopted by the club.” Under Fergal’s chairmanship he encouraged the digitisation and automation of the membership and registration committee. “Fergal’s philosophy of inspirational leadership and empowerment has fuelled the committee heads to participate, contribute and succeed in their tasks at running the club and it has brought great momentum and distinction to our club,” added Elaine. “This is, and will be, Fergal’s legacy – the broad collaboration and achievement of many people and teams both on and off the field.”
LEGION GAA HALL OF FAME: This year’s recipient of the Vincent Doyle Memorial Cup for the Hall of Fame is John Hegarty. John joins a veritable list of club legends such as Johnny Culloty, Weeshie Fogarty, Pat Healy and Tommy Regan to name but a few. John played at all levels and was renowned as a stylish “tough teak” defender. He has been one of the most loyal supporters of all Legion teams both in Direen and throughout the county. He has been the club’s delegate to the East Kerry Board for many years. As a long standing member of the Development Committee he has helped oversee the development of Legion’s facilities in Direen. John has been a consistent supporter of all club fundraisers and Hegarty’s Shop continues to be one of our club Lotto’s main outlets. We thank John for all he has contributed to the club and welcome him as one of the most deserving ever inductees into the Hall Of Fame.

RESUME: Local GAA players, officials and fans will have to wait at least another week to see what restrictions are going to be lifted.

no reason why we can’t return. It is different everywhere. Wales has to wait another two weeks and Scotland four.” O’Sullivan also wants to get the province’s clubs and county teams back playing, but only as soon as it’s possibly safe to do so. “As of Monday night we were allowed resume training subject to certain rules. We can’t use dressing rooms, players must arrive in their own car, they can’t share cars to get to the grounds, and there are certain forms that need to be filled out. But we are delighted to be back.” With the new All-Ireland Junior Football regulations set to come into force later this season, the All-Britain committee is pressing ahead with plans to run a championship so that the two eligible British teams can take part in the semi-final stages. As it stands the winners and defeated semi-finalists in Britain will go forward to the Junior title play off stages where they will join a home-grown team from New York and Kilkenny. Several English counties including London, Hertfordshire, Warwickshire and Lancashire are eligible to compete in the Irish junior series. With that in mind, the All-Britain Championships will go ahead this year. “We have it scheduled for the end of May or the start of June,” adds O’Sullivan. Neither Croke Park nor the local county boards in Ireland are in a position to announce any sort of a fixture list. O’Sullivan is hopeful that regionalised county boards in England will be in a
GAELIC GAMES: Legal in Britain but illegal in Ireland | By Sean Moriarty But it is not and as the two countries embark on very different post pandemic paths, from this weekend it will be possible to train for a football or hurling match in London. That very same activity is illegal in Killarney. On Monday this week, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced that football and cricket pitches, tennis and basketball courts and outdoor swimming pools can reopen. "I know how much people have missed the camaraderie and competition of organised sport, and how difficult it has been to restrict physical activities - especially for children,” Mr Johnson said on Monday morning. "So as teams return to outdoor pitches, courts, parks and fields, I hope today will kickstart a Great British summer of sport - with people of all ages reunited with teammates, and able to resume the activities they love.” Meanwhile here in Ireland, our government this week announced a cautious return to sporting activity. From April 26, training pods of 15 people will be allowed and the GAA do not expect a return to competitive games until at least mid-May, if not later. Until then, the fact remains, it is legal train for a hurling or a football match in London. That is not the case in Kerry. The irony cannot be lost on senior GAA

figures across Ireland. The national association that once banned its members from participating in ‘foreign games’ must now look enviously across the Irish Sea as the sport resumes there and remains off the agenda in this part of the world. One man with his feet firmly planted in both sides of the decision making process is Killarney man Noel O’Sullivan. The Spa GAA man was recently announced as the Provincial Council of Britain president – the biggest GAA job in the country. “During the first lockdown we were subject to GAA rules,” he explained, “But we are in a different jurisdiction so there is
position to start announcing club league and championship fixtures very soon – but only when it is safe to do so. “We won’t present a danger,” he added, “But for now we are delighted to get out of lockdown. We can now play golf, and from Monday week [April 12] we can go for a pint in an outdoor setting.” Ulster counties that fall under UK health regulations, have elected to defer county team training and competitive matches as this would be seen as an unfair advantage over counties in the Republic who are still in lockdown. Meanwhile here in the Republic, the wait goes on. “It is expected that the Government will publish any proposed changes to the current restrictions by the end of next week and we will communicate again at that point in terms of the implications for GAA activity,” said a GAA statement. “In the interim, we would again reiterate that the GAA have not decided on what competitions may or may not be facilitated in any revised national fixture programme for 2021. As we have stated previously, such decisions will be a factor of how much time is ultimately available to us, both for an inter county season and for the broader participation levels that will be necessary for a meaningful club season at both adult and underage levels.” Let us all hope that the first week of GAA activity in Britain provides the powers that be with valuable experience that can be shared on this side of the water. The irony of course is that the ‘foreigners’ are showing Croke Park the way.

The 28-year-old will join the French club Clermont Auvergne on a one-year deal, with the option of a second, in December. Hanrahan has made 140 appearances for the province and has been a central figure in the squad since his return to Munster from Northampton Saints in 2017. Earlier this season the French outfit saw the Kerry out-half at his best when he helped Munster secure victory at Stade Marcel Michelin in the second round of
the Champions Cup. He was one hundred percent accurate off the tee and scored 24 points. “It was difficult to hear the news regarding my future with Munster Rugby, however, it has been a dream come true and a privilege to represent my home province and wear the jersey for eight years,” he said. “I have lifelong friends from this club, and I am very proud to represent the people of Munster and in particular the people of Kerry. Equally, I believe I am going to a club with very similar traditions and values in Clermont and it’s an opportunity I am extremely excited for.” The Currow man has been effectively squeezed out of the Munster squad.
The return of Joey Carbery from long term injury, along with the emergence of a trio of young out-halves in Ben Healy, Jack Crowley and Jake Flannery and the current difficult financial climate caused by the pandemic forced the move. “JJ is a fantastic player and has been a great servant to Munster Rugby,” Head Coach Johann van Graan said. “We’ve said from the beginning we want to retain all of our players but unfortunately the harsh realities of what’s happened over the past year have come to a head. Due to the challenges stemming from the COVID-19 landscape we are not in a position to hold onto a player of JJ’s calibre, and we are sorry to see him go.”

Kerry remains in Rás Tailteann plans despite 2021 cancellation Castleisland will retain its stage finish and start status for next year’s Rás Tailteann despite this year’s event being cancelled as a result of pandemic-related restrictions. This is the third year in a row that Ireland’s biggest bike race has not run. Following the appointment of a new organising team after the 2018 race it was decided to give them a year out to redevelop the week-long race. Their plans were scuppered last year as a result of COVID-19 and the 2021 race, scheduled for June, met the same fate. Cáirde Rás Tailteann, the new team behind the race, has stated it will retain the route it had selected for the 2020 event next year meaning Castleisland will host a stage finish and start. Cycling teams and riders will overnight in the area meaning
Killarney and Tralee can look forward to an early season boost. “The silver lining to this turn of events for all of us is that it has now given us more time to consider a return to the traditional length of the event. While the plan is still to utilise the 2020/21 route as published. We are going to assess the addition of extra stages to the current route to potentially return An Rás closer to its historical, increasingly unique and rare 8-day format on the world stage and of course we would never rule out a return to UCI status if it could be achieved post COVID-19. Clearly though, there remains many elements that need to fall into place over the next 12 months for this to be successful,” race director, Listowel man Eugene Moriarty said. The last time the Rás Tailteann visited Kerry was in 2018 when Listowel hosted

a stage finish and start. The race passed through Killarney on that occasion as part of the 153km Listowel to Glengarriff stage. Prior to that, in 2016, both Dingle and Sneem hosted stage finishes. The proposed 2022 route includes Castleisland as the finish location for stage two. The 154km test starts in Horse and
Jockey, County Tipperary and will visit Tipperary town, Kilmallock, Charleville, Newmarket and Ballydesmond. On entering Castleisland, the riders face a 10km loop which will take in the Category 2 climb at Crag Cave. Stage three will start on Main St in Castleisland and follow a 173km route to Lisdoonvarna, County Clare.

mation from Government that underage football, Grassroots and League of Ireland, can return to non-contact training from April 26, the first step on a phased return for football at all levels of the game. Reacting to the announcement by Taoiseach Micheal Martin, FAI CEO Jonathan Hill has acknowledged the work of Government and its agencies to facilitate the return to training in pods of 15 for all underage players. The CEO has also assured all amateur adult teams that this return for underage players is the first step towards a return to football for all grassroots players as Ireland eases out of lockdown. “We obviously see this announcement from Government as a positive for all our underage players who have waited so patiently for the chance to play football again although, of course, we would have loved this to have been from April 5 but we note the realities of the current situation,” said Jonathan Hill. “Non-contact training in pods of 15 represents the start of a return for our game that will see all our players at all ages permitted to train and then to play in what we hope will be the near future. This battle with COVID-19 has been so demanding for Irish society and our footballers have had to endure so much in Level 5 lockdown.” “We thank them for their perseverance and their patience. The adherence to the Government guidelines of our grassroots clubs, their volunteers, coaches, match officials and players, has been exemplary and to be applauded. Our adult amateur game will unfortunately need to continue to be patient as we await a return to training for them and of course playing matches, but our game has proven itself to be safe in a COVID-19 environment and I urge all clubs to maintain this as we return in the first instance to training for our younger players on April 26th.” The FAI will now take the following steps in light of the Government update.
