If You Don’t Like Good Friday Drinking, Don’t Drink On Good Friday Words: Adam Moynihan The passing of the new intoxicating liquor bill, which will allow bars to sell alcohol on Good Friday for the first time since 1927, has (perhaps unsurprisingly) been met with fierce opposition in certain circles. Some see it as yet another example of modern society carelessly discarding a long-standing tradition. There’s an element of truth to that, but just because a custom has been there forever doesn’t make it right. Ireland in 2018 is a very different place to the Ireland of 1927 so surely it makes sense that the laws governing its people should evolve at a similar pace.

This was a devoutly Catholic country 90 years ago so banning the sale of alcohol on the day of Jesus’ death, as well as on the day of his birth and St Patrick’s Day, may well have been an appropriate measure at the time. But times change. Even by 1960, people had successfully campaigned for the St Patrick’s Day ban to be lifted. Similar rules, such as not being allowed to eat meat on Friday, have also largely disappeared. Religion simply isn’t as relevant to Irish people’s lives as it once was. Why should non-believers, or those of a different faith, or even Catholics who simply don’t agree with this particular tradition,

Ballyheigue TD John Brassil has been selected by Fianna Fáil to contest the next general election in Kerry. Brassil was expected to win the nomination quite comfortably and that’s exactly how it turned out as the sitting TD received 465 first preference votes. He eventually exceeded the quota of 506 on the third count. Tralee native Cllr Tom McEllistrim, who was a TD for Kerry North from 2002 to 2011, came second with 256 first preference votes while Glenbeigh based Michael Cahill (119), Waterville’s Norma Moriarty (104) and Michael O’Shea of Milltown (66) were also all unsuccessful in their bids. Although Fianna Fáil initially indicated that they would only be putting forward one candidate, a second candidate is expected to be added to the ticket in March. As Brassil is from North Kerry, it’s possible that an East Kerry runner could be deemed the most viable with Killarney Cllrs Niall Kelleher and John Joe Culloty currently the most obvious choices.

marriage referendum, gay rights activists said, “If you don’t like gay marriage, don’t get gay married”. The same logic can be applied to the removal of the drinking ban. If you don’t like drinking on Good Friday, don’t drink on Good Friday. The new bill doesn’t state that every Irish citizen is now required to go on the lash on Good Friday, just as the legalisation of gay marriage hasn’t forced people unwillingly into gay marriages. We’re talking about personal choices that affect the people making them on a strictly personal level. Let’s treat them as such.

be forced to live with a law that is explicitly Catholic in its nature? Personally I’d be of the opinion that religion should have no influence whatsoever on our legal system. Thankfully most Irish people, certainly amongst my generation, seem to agree, as evidenced by the outcome of the marriage equality referendum in 2015. Although this current debate is more trivial, I can see very distinct parallels between the two. Then as now those of a religious persuasion saw the law change as an attack on their personal beliefs. But the laws in question don’t actually affect them on a personal level. At the time of the

We asked some local publicans what they made of the government’s controversial decision to remove the ban on the sale of alcohol on Good Friday.

I’m in agreement. The Grand has been open for 23 years and every Good Friday we get tourists trying to open our doors to get in and experience some good Irish music and they can’t understand why we are closed. It was a law that was brought in 90 years ago and should have been taken back out at least 25 years ago. Patsy Sheehan – The Grand As it’s a holy day, having the pubs closed Good Friday is a lovely mark of respect but I am for and against this new law. It’s great for tourists as the bars being closed did put a bit of a damper on their holidays, especially for the ones not staying in hotels. I hope this doesn’t open a door for opening on Christmas Day though; I had two days off a year and now I’m down to only one! Colm Foley – Charlie Foley’s

To be honest, we haven’t discussed it much at home. My personal feeling is that we should remain closed because it is our USP. It’s nothing once we open... Just another day. In Thailand you can’t get a drink for love nor money on Buddha Day. It is also the beginning of a whole new era. The next thing is we will be opening on Christmas Day. I get that some people object to the apparent stranglehold the church still has over some laws (in this case and others) but there has never been a law against drinking on Good Friday, just prohibiting the sale of alcohol. Kate O’Leary – The Laurels Personally I’m in favour of it but it’s up to every individual publican to make up their own minds whether they open or not. They don’t have to open if they don’t want to. Some publicans might not want to for either conscience or religion, or they might take the chance to do some work on the bar. Overall the response I’ve gotten has been very positive. Having said that, I’d be completely against opening Christmas day, which should be a family day. Paudie O’Callaghan – The Failte

Eighth Amendment

This Is Straight Fear & Distrust Of Women Words: Anne Lucey Can you imagine if Brigid, not Patrick, were our lead saint? We’d have a lot less crozier certainty and a lot more compassionate doubt. A clever woman, practical in her ways, she would, of course, have dismissed as risible nonsense that equation 35 years ago between a mature woman and an egg. Would any man have stood for having a clause inserted into the constitution of a modern country that he was only worth a sperm with potential?

I am sure Brigid would have got a fit of laughing at the idea. Now, of course, even those who supported that ridiculous, divisive and, let’s face it, insulting amendment, suddenly see it for what it is and want it thrown out. That it has taken this long for the veil to fall is astonishing. Curiously, it was also Brigid’s month of February, in 1918, when women, after a hard fight – what have women got easily – got the right to vote. And it is only four years since gender quotas were mooted here, much to the chagrin of many of the same men who are now leading the charge against the Repeal of the Eighth, I have no doubt. There is some evidence in legend that Patrick feared Brigid and those old stories encapsulate that fear of a clever woman. One legend, as the Irish Independent reminds us this week, even tells of how she made a pregnancy disappear after being appealed to. A strong woman, she oversaw cures for cattle and doubtless she knew how to oversee a garden and manage what grows. And then, of course, the stern Armagh took over the gentler Kildare and the rest, as they say, is history as far as women were concerned. What followed was a remarkable reign and a reining in of women that is still not over. Does that fear persist? Let’s face it: a lot of what is going on here is straight fear and distrust of women. I bet you some of the same people who are out against the vaccination for young girls to prevent them getting cervical cancer when they grow up are involved in whipping up sanctimonious and pseudo-scientific arguments against the repeal. And they will be

stoutly against what follows it, regardless how limited and restrained. It may be worth looking beyond ourselves a bit here. Because there are huge and emotive and even moral arguments being advanced for preserving Ireland’s status as a place which outlaws abortion altogether.

So who is this country being asked to align itself with in this crusade? Between 1950 and 1985, almost all developed countries liberalized their abortion laws for reasons of human rights and safety of women. That includes our European partners like France, the Netherlands and the Nordic countries. And Germany. And the UK. And while we want England’s money, and regret Brexit, we are, of course, far superior to them on moral grounds, aren’t we? And while we salivate over the US and its money, we would never dream of telling that country to take away their Apples because of what Eve is allowed to get away with, now would we? So then, who are we like? In fact we are like a lot of the most corrupt countries where there are often ruling elites, huge poverty, media restrictions and where women are very downtrodden. In Europe we are aligned with Malta. This is where a female journalist was murdered recently, her car blown up. Our other twins are from Sub-Saharan Africa and then there’s Yemen in the Middle East. And let us not forget Bangladesh. We are right up there with El Salvador, Nicaragua and Venezuela. In fact we are most like Venezuela in our restrictive laws. In Venezuela, any woman suspected of abortion and who can’t explain a miscarriage is jailed. I was listening to Radio 4’s From Our Own Correspondent recently and it is frightening what happens to women when the letter of laws like the one we have is pursued - and any country that has laws like ours holds the potential for that kind of pursuit of a woman.

Eighth Amendment - Letter

When Does This Incredible Metamorphosis Happen? Many years ago I asked a group of boys to name their favourite television show. The vast majority named The Incredible Hulk as the one that most took their fancy. In order to satisfy my curiosity I watched an episode. The essence of what was to come was spoken in the introduction when a voice stated that an Incredible Metamorphosis would occur to the principal actor during the showing. On the numerous occasions since that evening, when the subject of legalising abortion is raised, I recall those words. I think of them when pro-choice advocates state that human life is not present during the early months of pregnancy. They speak of a clump of cells that have no real existence and most certainly have no claim to being called human. The obvious conclusion from what those people say is that at some indeterminate time during pregnancy an incredible metamorphosis occurs whereby the cells, as if by magic, transform into a human being. None of those people have ever, to my knowledge, stated definitively when that dramatic event happens. No one has said that a human being exists only from the 12th, 26th or the 31st week of pregnancy. I respectfully suggest that they have not done so because such arbitrary language would have neither medical nor logical import. As we celebrate the arrival of spring, the principal planting season, those who garden know full well that from the time the seed takes root in the warming soil, that essence and existence are present. There is not a ‘twinkling of the eye’ moment of metamorphosis from inert object to actual plant. Just as the seed in the garden goes from implantation, to maturity to ultimate decay, so, in the irresistible logic of nature, does the human being, in all its fullness, proceed from conception to adulthood to natural death. Le Gach Dea-Ghuí, Cllr Michael Gleeson

Roads

Is €18.9m Enough To Fix Kerry’s Roads? Kerry is set for a significant injection of funding for its roads but local politicians are divided on the whether or not the figure stated will be enough. €417 million was handed out nationally as part of the 2018 Regional and National Road Grant Allocation and Senator Coghlan (Fine Gael) welcomed the news of Kerry’s €18.9 million provision. “I was delighted to see Kerry receive €18.9 million in funding for our local and regional roads,” he said. “This funding will allow safety improvement works to be carried out throughout the county. Fine Gael in Government is committed to reducing deaths on Irish roads. 2017 saw the lowest number of fatalities on roads since records began. We cannot allow complacency to creep in and we must drive this down further.” Independent TD Danny Healy-Rae also hailed the announcement but fellow teachta dála John Brassil (Fianna Fáil) was less optimistic. Brassil

said he was deeply disappointed that the allocation of funding for non-national roads for the county is barely 50% of what is needed to maintain and improve the county’s roads. “Every euro is welcome because of the appalling state of many of the roads in the country,” he said, “but this funding announcement falls significantly short of what is needed just to maintain the existing roads network in the county, let alone improve it. “Fine Gael consistently underinvests in roads and infrastructure – it just doesn’t deliver in the long run, as it costs considerably more to repair roads that have been damaged by poor weather. “This is all the more disappointing as there is a Junior Minister from Kerry working in the Department of Transport. I would have hoped and assumed that he would have fought harder for a larger allocation for the county,” concluded Brassil.

TOWNTALK Killarney Looking Good For St Patrick’s Day

The theme of this year’s St Patrick’s Day parade will celebrate 60 years of the National Tidy Town’s Competition under the banner ‘Killarney You’re Looking Good’. Killarney has a huge tradition of participation in the Tidy Towns competition, winning the overall award in 2011 and maintaining its status as Gold Medal winner for each of the last 14 years. So what is it that makes Killarney look so good? Is it just the tidy appearance of our town or is it the beauty of our natural environment, the National Park, the lakes and mountains?

Our streetscapes, our buildings, our history, our heritage, our people, our warmth and welcoming nature... ‘Killarney You’re Looking Good’ can be interpreted in many ways and this is where you come in. Get your thinking caps on, open your minds and get the creative juices flowing. You have heard it said a million times and more, “There’s no place like Killarney”. Let’s illustrate that to the world by joining in on St Patrick’s Day, 2018. You are invited to interpret the theme with lots of colour and fun and in as open a way as you wish. Application forms for the parade will be available in due course.

Tourism

Tourists Have Low Expectations Of Irish Food The Irish Tourism industry needs to work towards changing the perception amongst overseas visitors to reposition Irish food and drink from being a pleasant surprise to becoming one of the compelling reasons to visit Ireland, according to Paul Keeley, Director of Commercial Development at Fáilte Ireland. Keeley was speaking at a briefing to tourism and food and drink industry representatives this week. Mr Keeley said that the vast majority of overseas visitors are positively surprised and satisfied by the overall quality of Ireland’s food and drink offering and return home having had a memorable experience during their visit but, prior to coming, their expectations of Irish food and drink are lower.

“Food and drink consumption is an intrinsic part of the tourist experience,” he said. “Quality experiences are now a major contributor to increasing holiday satisfaction, creating positive memories and driving advocacy. Amongst those deciding on a holiday location, the expectation of good food is nearly as important as hospitality. We undoubtedly have the product and expertise, we have natural produce, fresh ingredients, and great fish and meat but we need to ensure that our food and drink offering gains a global reputation that matches the reality on the ground.” He also said that food could help grow tourism revenue by as much as €400 million over the next five years.

Fewer Britons, More Germans Visiting Ireland

Zoe Redmond (Tourism Ireland’s Manager Central Europe), Tourism Minister Brendan Griffin and Niall Gibbons (CEO of Tourism Ireland) at the launch of a new tourism strategy for the German market.

Ministers Shane Ross and Brendan Griffin recently welcomed the publication of official data on overseas travel for 2017 from the Central Statistics Office (CSO), which showed an increase of 3.6% in overseas visits to Ireland for 2017 compared to 2016. There was a record number of overseas visits to Ireland in 2017 at 9,932,100. Interestingly, this increase came despite a drop off in the number of people visiting from Great Britain. This was offset, in part, by more visitors from mainland European countries like Germany. There was also a 16% increase in the number of visitors from North America. Commenting on the figures, Minister Ross said: “Figures released by the CSO today confirm that 2017 has been a record-breaking year for overseas visits to Ireland. This is a fantastic achievement given that 2016 was an exceptional year in its own right and, also, in view of the fall in visitor numbers from our largest market, Great Britain.” CSO figures on overseas travel: • At over 9.932 million visits, overall trips to Ireland were up 3.6% in 2017 compared to 2016. • Visits from Mainland Europe grew by 5.5% in 2017, to 3,482,400 visits • North America registered an increase of 16.2% for 2017 (2,101,500 visits) • Visits from Great Britain were down by 5% for 2017 (3,728,900 visits) • Visits from the rest of the world (mostly long-haul and developing markets) totalled 619,300 for 2017 (representing an increase of 12.6%)

Germany in particular offers significant potential for Irish tourism, according to a new strategy also launched by Minister of State for Tourism and Sport, Brendan Griffin this week. The Tourism Ireland strategy sets out challenging and ambitious targets which will see the island of Ireland welcome 800,000 German visitors per year by 2021, representing growth of 20%; and will see revenue generated by holiday visitors increase by 27%, to €375 million per year. Germany is the third-largest market for tourism to the island of Ireland and in 2017 we welcomed around 660,000 German visitors. In fact, we saw growth of 62% in revenue from German visitors to Ireland in the period 2012-2016; this strong growth was driven by effective marketing and sales activity, more direct flights, as well as positive macro-economic conditions. Minister Griffin said: “The continued strong growth in overseas visits to Ireland in 2017 is welcome news for all of us, and especially for communities across the country where tourism represents a large percentage of economic activity and employment. The quality of our overseas marketing has helped to ensure that interest in visiting Ireland remains high among potential visitors in our top source markets like Germany. I want to compliment Tourism Ireland on this review and I have no doubt that their new marketing strategy will build on the very strong performance we have enjoyed from Germany in recent years.” Killarney is becoming an increasingly popular destination for German tourists with direct flights available to the nearby Kerry Airport from both Frankfurt and Berlin.

Chamber To Tackle Low Off-Season Occupancy Killarney Chamber of Commerce and Tourism has said that low off-season hotel occupancy is a challenge for its members but one that can be transformed into an opportunity if the right solutions are put in place. Addressing members last night at the final phase of a consultation process for the Killarney Tourism Economic Impact Review (TEIR 1) report, which is being compiled by W2 Consulting, Chamber President Paul O’Neill said that one of the most surprising aspects of the initial findings was that Killarney trails the national and even regional average in terms of off-season occupancy. Over 100 members attended the event in the Killarney Avenue Hotel, which finished with members giving their recommendations for growing the economy through tourism and industry generally in Kerry. “We will be publishing full details of the report in the very near future but suffice to say that our event was a very positive engagement,” O’Neill said. “The key findings were relayed to members and this led to a very positive discussion around how we can take Kerry forward. We’ve not had a report like this done on Killarney before and that was very much evidenced by the energy in the room. With regard to the report itself, while we knew we had off-season challenges, we didn’t quite realise that occupancy rates compared in the way they do with national and regional averages. “Now that we know where we are, there’s nothing for us to do but treat this an opportunity. Clearly the status quo isn’t working and we’ve already set about addressing it with innovative ways of bringing people in. These include festivals such as the Christmas Festival just gone and the recently announced Killarney Mountain Festival, which takes place on 9th, 10th and 11th of March. “But there’s also an opportunity here for us to challenge central government and various agencies involved in tourism and industrial promotion to look again at Killarney and match our determination to ensure that the economy of this town and county grows in the shoulder periods of the year.” Conor Hennigan, Development Manager with the Killarney Chamber, said that there are many assuring aspects from the findings, not least that the report had confirmed tourists’ satisfaction rating with the Killarney experience. “Ultimately, the research conducted for this report, including interviews with tourists, delivered huge approval ratings in terms of visitor satisfaction levels,” he said. “So we clearly have the product, the service and the capacity. The issues we have are effectively seasonality and regionality and our meeting tonight was about getting the opinion of our members as to what the solutions may be. We got some very interesting insights and they will now become part of the report.”

Changes Expected As Gleneagle Group Secures €30m Refinancing Deal

Ken Costigan from Great Outdoors Dublin presenting the Best Outdoor Adventure Event award to Kelly Crichton and Oliver Kirwan from Elite Event Management at the Outsider Magazine awards.

National Award For Elite Events The popular Gleneagle Hotel in Killarney is set for significant redevelopment after owners secured a €30 million refinancing deal. The Gleneagle Group, which is owned by the O’Donoghue family, says the new funds will allow for refurbishments and upgrades to all of their hotels, including The Gleneagle, Brehon and Scotts hotel. Outlining the new developments, Patrick O’Donoghue, CEO of the Gleneagle Group, said the company had gone through a “financial refinancing with another funder”. “The principal funder is Ulster Bank with whom we have a banking relationship through one of our associated hotels,” he said. “We felt that bringing all our banking under one provider better met the commercial needs of the group.” “Changing funders also allows us to substantially accelerate our capital investment programme. This is being carried out on a phased basis so as not

to interfere with the operation of the hotels. It includes guestroom and general refurbishments, facility upgrades and technological advancements.

Drawing on our sixty years of experience in the hospitality industry, this programme of improvements will provide our guests with an enhanced visitor experience.” Last year The Gleneagle celebrated its 60th anniversary having originally opened its doors in 1957. Their Ballroom,

established in 1962, quickly earned a reputation for being one of the best music venues in the country. Today the INEC can hold 3,500 people and regularly attracts the top artists from Ireland and abroad. The Gleneagle Group has been instrumental in the growth and expansion of the tourism industry in Killarney and has always been one of the most biggest employers in the town. This exciting new development is just the latest piece of positive news for Killarney’s hospitality industry. Two weeks ago the five-star Europe Hotel announced plans to build 40 staff bedrooms at a cost of €3 million, while as recently as last week the famous Great Southern Hotel, for a while known as The Malton, re-opened under its original name.

Elite Event Management, which is based on the Tralee Road in Killarney, is celebrating having won the Best Outdoor/Adventure Event of 2017 at the Outsider Awards. Representatives of Elite Events travelled to Dublin to pick up the prestigious award, which they won for their event Quest Glendalough. Quest Glendalough took place on April 8 and more than 1,700 participants took part. Elite Events saw off stiff competition from 26 other shortlisted events to claim the prize. Oliver Kirwan, Race Director, was presented the prize by Ken Costigan of sponsors, The Great Outdoors. Oliver said: “We are really delighted to win this award. We work hard all year delivering world-class events and Quest Glendalough really is an amazing day out. We’re very fortunate to have lots of support locally here in Killarney but also on the ground where we run our events. We’re looking forward to bringing lots more enjoyable events to our participants in the year ahead. Thanks to everyone who voted for us to win.” At the awards, Quest Glendalough was praised for topping the poll of events for best outdoor/adventure event of 2017. It was hailed as ‘a firm favourite on Ireland’s adventure calendar’. The Outsider Awards recognise the very best in the outdoor and adventure scene in Ireland. Quest Glendalough is an adventure race which involves racers running and cycling through the Wicklow Mountains National Park and Glendalough Valley as well as kayaking across the spectacular Upper Lake and finishing the race in the shadows of the monastic round tower which epitomises the Glendalough area.

Burns Night Was Ablaze In Killarney Ireland and Scotland share many a kinship, one of them being our fondness for storytellers. Affectionately referred to as a ‘seanchaí’ in Ireland, they were originally called a ‘bard’. Robert Burns, Scotland’s most notable ‘bard’, is famous for his 550 poems about romance, social freedom and politics. Born January 25, 1759, his birthday lends to the date of ‘Burns Night’, celebrated by millions across Scotland and, now, by many here in Killarney. Burns was also a fan of a tipple or two (he took up lodgings in a local pub so that he could work and enjoy whisky at the same time), so it’s fitting that Burns Night was celebrated at the Celtic Whiskey Bar & Larder last week for the second consecutive year. With a Scottish owner, Ally Alpine, the experience was truly authentic down

to the delicacy: haggis, neeps and tatties - all accompanied by a traditional bagpiper. There was, of course, a premium Scotch tasting with resident whisky specialist, Alan O’Donovan. Single malts from all five whisky regions were tasted, the brands in-

cluding Glenkinchie, Balvenie, Hazelburn, Glenfarclas, Glenmorangie and Kilchoman. Next on the bar’s calendar is Valentine’s Day with a special three course menu for €25 per person and a 2 for 1 offer on cocktails. They have, however, promised that there won’t be a bagpiper! Sláinte mhaith!

The Great Southern has officially returned to the town of Killarney as the hotel reopened on January 26. The Scally Family, proprietors of the Great Southern Killarney, celebrated the reopening of the hotel with a Charity Vintage Afternoon party which saw 200 guests arrive in their finery to be a part of this historic day. All proceeds from the event were donated to the Kerry Hospice Foundation. This special Vintage Afternoon Tea relived the glory days of the Victorian era when the Great Southern first opened as one of Ireland’s leading hotels. The event began at 2pm with classical entertainment followed by a charity auction with Kerry Radio’s Brendan Fuller as MC. Guests enjoyed an array of dainty delights including a selection of finger sandwiches,

warm scones and an assortment of delicious pastries and cakes served under the great gilded dome of the Victorian Garden Room Restaurant. Toasts were then made by CEO of the Hayfield Family Collection, Ettienne Van Vrede, who then presented a cheque to Pat Doolan of the Kerry Hospice Foundation and thereafter guests enjoyed a glass of champagne in the Grand Foyer. Speaking on the day, Ettienne praised the outstanding work undertaken by the Kerry Hospice and said he and his team were proud to celebrate their reopening under the “iconic” Great Southern banner. “Following the past 2 years of refurbishments, we look forward to a new chapter in this grand hotel’s history and to welcoming back old friends and new of the Great Southern,” he said. All proceeds from the event were donated to the Kerry Hospice Foundation and the sum raised was in excess of €10,000.

Mayor of Killarney, Cllr Niall Kelleher (left), launches the Killarney Ploughing Association event at Wharton’s Farm, Fossa. Also in attendance was Deputy Danny Healy-Rae.

A major ploughing match, organised by the newly affiliated Killarney Ploughing Association, will be held on O’Leary’s Farm, Coolroe, Killorglin on Sunday, February 25. The event was formally launched by Mayor of Killarney, Cllr Niall Kelleher, at a gathering on Wharton’s Farm in Fossa on Saturday. With five ploughing associations currently operating in Kerry – in Abbeydorney, Ardfert, Ballyheigue, Ballyduff and Causeway – a need was identified for a ploughing association in Killarney to be affiliated again. There is a great ploughing tradition in the greater Killarney area with six local men winning All-Ireland titles in the 1950s and, in 1954, Killarney hosted the first world championships to be held in Ireland after the inaugural event was staged in Ontario, Canada the previous year.

Killarney also played host to the national champions on two occasions, 1939 and 1961. The February 25 match will bridge a 53-year gap since the last ploughing match took place in Gortroe, Fossa, in 1965. Local man Danny O’Leary of Bishop’s Farm, Ballycasheen was a champion in one of the categories that day and the Killarney club is now proud to have him as president of the Killarney Ploughing Association. The chairman is Thomas Wharton, Veronica Heaslip is secretary, Shane Godley is treasurer and the PRO is Siobhán Wharton. Ploughing has been resurrected again in the last couple of years with the annual

South Kerry Ploughing Championships and Harvest Show, run by the Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club, held for the past three years. Any queries, please contact Thomas Wharton on 086 0306344.

Christmas Charity Walk

Despite the icy elements, dozens of charity champions turned out for the annual fundraising Christmas Charity walk in Fossa on Thursday, December 28. Two very worthy local causes benefited from the annual walk, which was organised by the Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club. It was the fifth annual event of its kind. The main charity was the Kerry-Cork Health Link Bus while proceeds from a post-walk raffle went to the Ian O’Connell Fund, set up to help Killarney teenager Ian O’Connell who was seriously injured in a fall from his bicycle last August.

SEPTIC TANKS The Department of Environment published the Water Services (Amendment) Act, 2012 to regulate waste water discharges from all homes that are not connected to the public sewer network. This was a direct result of a European Court of Justice Judgement made against Ireland in 2009 in relation to the management of Domestic Waste Water Treatment Systems. This Ruling had direct implication for over 440,000 Waste Water Treatment Systems serving single houses in Ireland. The Act includes the registration and inspection of the said systems. All existing systems were to be registered by the 1st of February 2013 but if not so registered they may still be so registered by completing an online application on www.protectourwater.ie. All new developments where a Domestic Waste Water Treatment Systems was constructed or installed is to be registered within 90 days of the connection of the premises to the system. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is responsible for development of a National Inspection Plan. This has been commenced

with areas of higher risk to human health and water quality being prioritised. Following inspections if improvement works are required, a grant scheme has been commenced under the control of the Department of Environment. Prior to a sale of a property, it is important that the Vendor would have registered the Waste Water Treatment Unit and would have same checked by a competent professional to ensure that it is operating and has been constructed in accordance with the planning permission pertaining to the property. This will prevent difficulties from arising in the conveyancing process. Further information is available on the EPA website or from protectourwater.ie. In a tweet sent on Thursday, Trump said: Thank you for all of the nice compliments and reviews on the State of the Union speech. 45.6 million people watched, the highest number in history. @FoxNews beat every other Network, for the first time ever, with 11.7 million people tuning in. Delivered from the heart! Although the 45.6 million figure was accurate, speeches by former presidents Barack Obama, Bill Clinton and George W Bush all obtained larger audiences. Obama’s first speech in 2009

Never fails to entertain

was watched by 52.4 million viewers. George W Bush’s 2003 speech, which made a case for the war in Iraq, was watched by 62.1 million people. In 2002, around 52 million watched Bush’s post-9/11 union address, when the president warned of the “axis of evil”. The most viewed was Bill Clinton’s speech to a joint session in 1993, which had 66.9 million viewers. Canadian-American comedian Samantha Bee, who rose to prominence as a correspondent on the popular Daily Show with Jon Stewart before leaving to host her own show, Full Frontal, was cutting with her assessment of the current president’s address. “Rumor had it this would be an optimistic, glass half-full type speech, and it was,” she said, “assuming that glass is half-full of cyanide and I get to drink it.”

“I Will Just Look Like A Stupid Little Girl” Under cross-examination at Belfast Crown Court on Thursday, a woman who claimed that she was raped by two international rugby players in 2016 said she initially didn’t want to report the attack as she feared she wouldn’t be believed. The woman texted a friend at the time of the alleged assault and said: “I don’t want to get the police involved. You know how it will turn out. It’s my word against theirs. Ulster Rugby will vouch for their good characters and I will just look like a stupid little girl.” Paddy Jackson and Stuart Olding stand accused of

raping the student, who was 19 when the alleged incident took place, at a house party at Jackson’s home in Belfast. Two other men are also facing charges arising from the alleged attack. At a press conference yesterday where he named his starting XV for Saturday’s 6 Nations opener, Ireland head coach Joe Schmidt refused to comment on the presence of two of his players, Rory Best and Iain Henderson, at the trial. When asked if Best, who is Ireland’s captain, was given permission to attend court, Schmidt said: “I’ve got no comment on any of that.”

Thieves Say 4,000Kg Of Oranges “For Their Own Consumption” Police in Spain have recovered four tonnes of stolen oranges after pulling over two cars packed with the fruit. The oranges were found when police in Seville became suspicious and searched the vehicles following a short chase. Five people were arrested when they could not explain

where the oranges had come from. One suspect said they had picked them up from the ground. It was later discovered that the fruit had been stolen from a warehouse in the nearby town of Carmona. They added that they were carrying them for their own consumption.

Nintendo Announce Super Mario Film

Mario, Luigi, Princess Toadstool, Bowser and Yoshi are set to star on the big screen as Nintendo announced plans to release a new Super Mario film. The popularity of the iconic video game has rarely wavered since the stocky, Italian plumber first hit our screens back in 1985. Super Mario Bros was the best-selling game of all time for over three decades and modern day variations remain hugely successful. No release date, writer or director has been announced for

new project but speculation, based on Nintendo’s current schedule, is that it might not reach cinemas until 2020. Nintendo have confirmed that they will work with Illumination Entertainment, the production company behind Despicable Me, Dr Seuss and Minions. It won’t be the first time Mario and Luigi will have featured in a film series. A live action film loosely based on the gaming series was released in 1993 but was universally panned by critics.

Time Spent On Facebook Down 5% Figures released on Thursday have revealed that the overall time spent on Facebook fell by around 5%, or approximately 50 million hours a day, in the last quarter of 2017. The social network’s decision to show fewer viral videos is being cited as a major factor in the drop off, which came despite the number of monthly users growing 14% to 2.13 billion over the same three-month period. That rise in active users was slightly lower than it was in the previous quarter. Chief executive Mark Zuckerberg announced major changes to Facebook’s news feed earlier in January, saying the priority was encouraging more personal interaction among users while also making content from businesses and news outlets

less prominent. “Helping people connect is more important than maximising the time they spend on Facebook,” he said. “We can make sure the service is good for people’s well-being and for society overall.” The news of the decline in Facebook usage comes after Apple CEO Tim Cook warned customers about the overuse of technology, as reported in last week’s Killarney Advertiser.

Poland’s senate has approved a controversial bill penalising any suggestion of Poland’s complicity in the Holocaust on its soil. Backed by the lower house last week, the draft legislation calls for fines or prison sentences of up to three years for anyone intentionally attempting to attribute the crimes of Nazi Germany to the Polish nation. Poland’s ruling Law and Justice party (PiS) has said the bill – which the president, Andrzej Duda, who backs it, now has 21 days to sign into law – is needed to protect Poland’s international reputation and ensure historians recognise that

Poles as well as Jews perished under the Nazis. President Duda says Poland has the right “to defend historical truth”. The country has long objected to the use of phrases like “Polish death camps”, which suggest the Polish state in some way shared responsibility for camps such as Auschwitz. The camps were built and operated by Nazi Germany after it invaded Poland in 1939. About 100 Polish artists, politicians and journalists have signed an open letter calling for the repeal of the bill, saying it goes too far in trying to make Poland “the only blameless nation in Europe”.

Taxi Fare Increases Come Into Effect

As of yesterday, all taxi fares will be subject to an increase of 3.22%. Under the new National Transport Authority rules, the set initial charge for all taxis will rise from €3.60 to €3.80 during standard hours, and €4 to €4.20 during premium hours. The cost of a €10 journey will rise to around €10.50. The increase was initially announced after the Taxi Fares Review in September, which said that costs of operating a taxi had in-

creased by 3.22% since the last price rise in 2015. Anne Graham, chief executive of the NTA, said it undertakes a survey of drivers and consumers together with a review of any change in the cost of operating a taxi service every two years. “In 2014, a 4% increase in maximum fares was granted, and between 2014 and 2016, we have calculated that in overall terms, costs increased by a further 3.2%,” Ms Graham said.

Ulster Bank have admitted to making €100 million by overcharging 3,500 customers over a number of years. The company has admitted that it overcharged thousands of people by denying tracker rates with “ambiguities” in its contracts. Two of the bank’s officials, Paul Stanley (chief financial officer) and Elizabeth Arnett (head of corporate affairs) were quizzed on Thursday at the Oireachtas

Finance Committee. Their CEO Gerry Mallon, however, was not with them. Mallon plans to resign later in 2018 and become chief executive of Tesco in the UK. Ulster Bank say they have set aside €211 million to pay back the €100 million it wrongly took from customers and also to compensate them for the damage caused. So far, just 1,200 of the bank’s almost 3,500 overcharged customers have been reimbursed.

The R.I.C. Barracks : Emmett’s Road (Lower Lewis Road) 1927

Reproduced with permission by Switzer Archive ©

The Royal Irish Constabulary Barracks (located on the site of the Áras Phádraig and Mineral Waters) was home to the crown forces in Killarney town for over 100 years.

Constructed in 1822, on a site located on Emmett’s Road (Lower Lewis Road) over looking the town. The Barracks housed a succession of her majesty’s finest. It was attacked by Republicans on at least two occasions and extensively fire damaged by a bomb in 1922. This photo was taken in 1927, the floors had collapsed and the roof was long gone. The building doesn’t feature in the 1933 aerial photos of the town, so it would appear this photo shows the barracks in ‘its final days’. Nevertheless, despite what it represented, if it stood today, what a fine addition to the town it would be.

Sem B-Ballers Taste All-Ireland Glory

30 years ago this week, on January 31, 1988, St Brendan’s College defeated North Mon 84-78 in the All-Ireland Colleges Senior A Basketball Championship final at St Declan’s College, Cabra (Dublin). Front from left are Fr Jack Fitzgerald, Eamonn Keogh, Liam O’Connor, Aidan O’Shea, Mark Cooper and Gerard Flynn. Back from left are Mike Leahy, Simon O’Shea, Connie O’Leary, Timmy Leen, Cormac O’Donoghue (captain), Colman O’Shea, Niall O’Callaghan, Tim Regan (coach), Timmy Looney and Pat Sheehan. The glory trail that culminated in a first and only AllIreland Senior A title for the Sem started out with victory in the Dawn Dairies Kerry Schoolboys Basketball Blitz which featured wins against Mercy Kanturk, Tralee CBS, Coláiste Pádraig, Castleisland and Killarney Community College. An 83-58 Munster semi-final victory over Crosshaven followed and although St Brendan’s lost narrowly after overtime to North Mon of Cork in the provincial decider, they had still done enough to secure a place in the All-Ireland Championship top eight. The long journey to St Declan’s College in Cabra, Dublin followed with the top two teams from each province going to battle. Spirited victories over Leinster champions Patrician of Newbridge, St Mary’s of Galway and La Salle of Belfast saw St Brendan’s win their group and they went on to score a 88-75 victory over St Joseph’s of Galway in the semi-final. The dream final saw Tim Regan’s side pitched once again against their provincial rivals North Mon of Cork and although the Killarney boys trailed 41-38 at half time, they gradually got on top in the second half and eventually won the game – and the All-Ireland title – on an 84-78 scoreline. This was a first and only All-Ireland Colleges

Senior A Basketball Championship title for St Brendan’s. The school has won three other All-Ireland basketball titles in other age categories since that historic victory in 1988: the U-16 National Cup in 2005, a first year title in 2006 and a second year title in 2007. Following the All-Ireland victory for St Brendan’s in 1988, various celebratory events took place. Upon arriving home at Killarney Railway Station on the Sunday night of the final, family, friends and fellow students gave

the winning team a rousing reception and they were paraded through the streets of Killarney. The late Killarney UDC Cllr Seán O’Keeffe proposed a special vote of congratulations for the team at the town council meeting on Monday February 1 and it was adopted unanimously by all councillors. The late Bishop of Kerry Diarmuid O’Suilleabháin and St Brendan’s College President Fr Dan O’Riordan hosted a special reception for the team at the school on Tuesday, February 2.

7 Simple Valentine’s Day Cocktails Raspberry Martini Fizz

Espresso Martini

This classy number requires minimum mixing. Combine Martini and gin, then pour it into chilled champagne glasses on top of half teaspoon of icing sugar. Give it a quick spin with a spoon, then add frozen raspberries to each glass and top with Prosecco.

This potent blend consists of 100ml vodka, 50ml Kahlua, 50ml cold espresso and 25ml crème de cacoa, plus a handful of ice. Put all ingredients in a cocktail shaker, mix well for up to a minute then strain into Martini glasses. If you’re feeling crafty, create a cardboard template and dust a cocoa heart over the top.

Feeling Hot, Hot, Hot We’re big fans of the spirit world’s Comeback Kid – Campari, and a splash of rouge is exactly what the doctor ordered on Valentine’s Day. Combine 50ml with 25ml of white rum, the juice of a lime, 2 teaspoons of brown sugar and 200g of frozen mixed fruit. Blitz it with ice, then pour into a Martini glass and top with freeze-dried strawberry pieces and a couple of Kaffir lime leaves.

Pink Grapefruit Margarita A tangy margarita is guaranteed to make cheeks blush and the classic, tequila-based treat can be given romantic rosiness by adding pink grapefruit. Rim two margarita glasses with a combination of 2 teaspoons each of table salt and caster sugar – do this by scattering the mix onto a plate, wetting the rim of the glass and dipping it to create a sparkly edge. Add 75ml tequila, 25ml Cointreau, the juice of 1 grapefruit, 1 tablespoon agave and some ice to a shaker, mix well then strain into the glasses, adding a grapefruit peel curl if you’re feeling flash.

Flirtini Turn up the passion – quite literally – with this elegant blend of 100ml vodka, 1 tablespoon of raspberry liqueur and 50ml passion fruit juice, shaken with a handful of ice, then strained into chilled Martini glasses. Pop half a passion fruit to float in each glass and enjoy a totally tropical tipple.

Mojito Mule Meld two cocktail classics – a refreshing mojito and a sparky Moscow mule – in this gingery muddle. Divide a chopped lime, a small handful of mint leaves and six slices of fresh, peeled ginger between two glasses and use the end of a rolling pin to mash together, being careful not to completely pulverise them. Add 100ml spiced rum, mash again and fill the glass with crushed ice. Top with ginger beer and garnish with a sprig of mint – très chic!

Vanilla & Apricot Fizz If your love adores all things sweet, they’re sure to be a fan of vanilla vodka. Measure out 50ml then mix it with 2 teaspoons of apricot jam until the mix is loose. Add 2 tablespoons of lemon juice and pour into glasses rimmed with caster sugar - achieved using the margarita method, above – then top up with soda water and garnish with a physalis. We have a huge selection of wines, beers and spirits so whatever ingredients you need for your perfect Valentine’s Day cocktail, you’ll find them all at Carry Out.

6 Ways For Single Ladies To Make The Most Of Valentine’s 1. Indulge yourself.

4. Send love someone else’s way.

Since Valentine’s Day is all about love, spend the day loving yourself. It makes perfect sense. Take the day off work (or just leave an hour early) and do whatever you want, be it pampering yourself with a lavish mani-pedi or staying home, ordering take out and binge-watching every movie your celeb crush has ever made. Or binge-watch a full season of your favourite TV show on Netflix. After all, you have no one to please but your own self.

Studies show that kindness spreads, so start an epidemic. Give Valentine’s Day cards to those close to you, like your co-workers and friends, as well as those not so close to you, like the barista who serves you your coffee. Not the Hallmark type? Volunteer locally and help those less fortunate than you. Seeing a face light up from your small gesture will fill you with love and make the world a better place.

2. Follow through. If indulging seems a little too... indulgent, go the opposite direction and use the day to finish (or start) something you’ve been meaning to tackle. Try to secure that promotion you’re after at work.

3. Fall in love with something new. Interested in taking up yoga? Want to learn how to dance ballet? Wish you could cook risotto? Challenge yourself to do something you haven’t done before or seldom get to do because of your schedule.

5. Participate in a “secret Valentine” with your friends. Who needs a valentine when you and your girlfriends have each other? Round up your girls, draw names from a hat, and buy whomever you draw a little something. Then, on V-Day, meet at a friend’s apartment to exchange gifts. Afterward, get all dolled up and enjoy a night out on the town. Try a karaoke bar, because let’s face it, when is karaoke anything but a good time?

6. Throw a party. If gift-giving won’t go over with your group, invite your friends over to celebrate being fabulous.

The Legend Of St Valentine

The history of Valentine’s Day – and the story of its patron saint – is shrouded in mystery. We do know that February has long been celebrated as a month of romance, and that St Valentine’s Day, as we know it today, contains vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. But who was Saint Valentine, and how did he become associated with this ancient rite? One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine’s actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death. Other stories suggest that Valentine may have been killed for attempting to help Christians escape harsh Roman prisons, where they were often beaten and tortured. According to one legend, an imprisoned Valentine actually sent the first “valentine” greeting himself after he fell in love with a young girl–possibly his jailor’s daughter–who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter signed “From your Valentine,” an expression that is still in use today. By the Middle Ages, perhaps thanks to this reputation, Valentine would become one of the most popular saints in England and France. While some believe that Valentine’s Day is celebrated in the middle of February to commemorate the anniversary of Valentine’s death or burial – which probably occurred around AD 270 – others claim that the Christian church may have decided to place St. Valentine’s feast day in the middle of February in an effort to “Christianize” the pagan celebration of Lupercalia. Celebrated at the ides

of February, or February 15, Lupercalia was a fertility festival dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture, as well as to the Roman founders Romulus and Remus. To begin the festival, members of the Luperci, an order of Roman priests, would gather at a sacred cave where the infants Romulus and Remus, the founders of Rome, were believed to have been cared for by a she-wolf or lupa. The priests would sacrifice a goat, for fertility, and a dog, for purification. They would then strip the goat’s hide into strips, dip them into the sacrificial blood and take to the streets, gently slapping both women and crop fields with the goat hide. Far from being fearful, Roman women welcomed the touch of the hides because it was believed to make them more fertile in the coming year. Later in the day, according to legend, all the young women in the city would place their names in a big urn. The city’s bachelors would each choose a name and become paired for the year with his chosen woman. These matches often ended in marriage. Lupercalia survived the initial rise of Christianity and but was outlawed—as it was deemed “un-Christian”–at the end of the 5th century, when Pope Gelasius declared February 14 St. Valentine’s Day. It was not until much later, however, that the day became definitively associated with love. During the Middle Ages, it was commonly believed in France and England that February 14 was the beginning of birds’ mating season, which added to the idea that the middle of Valentine’s Day should be a day for romance. Today, according to the Greeting Card Association, an estimated 1 billion Valentine’s Day cards are sent each year, making Valentine’s Day the second largest card-sending holiday of the year. (An estimated 2.6 billion cards are sent for Christmas.) Women purchase approximately 85% of all valentines.

Fun & Fitness at Killarney Sports & Leisure Centre The Killarney Sports & Leisure Centre have launched their School Tour Programme for 2018 and are delighted to announce that it’s now open for bookings. The tours cater for all age groups with the emphasis being on fun and fitness. All activities are based on the principals of fitness and core fundamental movement skills. In 2017, they hosted a total of 25 schools throughout the summer with the largest school having 132 pupils. The smallest school had just 11 so groups of all sizes are welcome. Your school can choose either a half day or a full day option. The half day option is available from 9.30 to 1pm and the full day option is available from 9.30am to 3pm. The half day option (with section 1 and 2 included) is €10 per child and the full day op-

tion (with sections 1, 2 and 3 included) is €14 per child. The day is split into 3 sections: Section 1: Ice Breakers & Invasion Games During the early morning slot, the instructors build a rapport with the students to set the tone for the day. This is best achieved by fun icebreakers and inclusion games such as soccer, football, basketball, dodge ball and much more. Finally they finish off the morning slot with some parachute games and fun on the bouncy castles and brand new target game. Section 2: Pool Inflatable The second part of the day is spent in the pool on our 20m obstacle inflatable course. This is hugely popular and great fun.

Section 3: Team building Finally after some lunch it’s off to do some team building and obstacle courses in the sports hall. Here the instructors will take a more passive role and set tasks for the students to solve themselves. To finish the day there’s an obstacle course and relay race designed on the principals of fitness. If you have any other questions relating to the package, times or dates please don’t hesitate to contact Dan on 064 6636554 or alternatively you can email him at dan.odonoghue@killarneyleisure.com.

The Biggest Beauty Trends From The 2018 Grammy Awards This year’s Grammy Awards, music’s night of nights, were held at Madison Square Garden, New York City as seen in our Celeb News Page 22. As far as styling goes, you can always count on the Grammys red carpet to be quirky. In a similar manner to the Golden Globes’ all-black dress code, many attendees were wearing or holding a white rose to show their

solidarity with victims of sexual harassment and assault. This year, the stars’ hair and makeup choices did not disappoint. Lady Gaga held her braid together with a piece of leather, Chrissy Teigen donned a lob and Lana Del Rey’s winged eyeliner game was so strong, it nearly reached her ear!

Garden Magic Your Conifers Questions Answered

Here are the biggest beauty trends:

Rita Ora & Hailee Steinfeld: Brushed Out Curls

Lady Gaga: Hair Braid Kesha: Beachy Waves

Chrissy Teigen & Kristin Cavallari: Sun-kissed glow

Lana Del Rey & Lady Gaga: Winged Eyeliner

Toning tables are suitable for all ages, levels of fitness & abilities, says Jill Duggan of Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio

Stress-Free Toning Tables Key Benefits of Toning 1. Improved body shape and inch loss appeals to all ages. 2. Full body workout without too much effort. 3. Tightens hard to reach areas. 4. Assists joint discomfort and stiffness. 5. Increases circulation. 6. Reduces water retention. 7. Improves posture and reduces pain Toned Muscles and Improved Posture Additional benefits of exercising using toning tables include increased muscle tone and improved posture. Exercising with toning tables tones muscles in the stomach and shoulders. This helps to reposition the ribcage and shoulders, which improves postural alignment. Muscles that are not normally used are worked with specific exercises and are strengthened with the repetitive movement. Improved Circulation Poor circulation may often be a problem for people who are sedentary. Regular exercise with a toning table can help to stimulate blood flow, increase body fluid circulation

45

and promote healthy lymphatic activity. Improved blood circulation may also help to boost the metabolism, which can assist weight loss efforts. Gentle and Stress-free One of the more desirable benefits of using toning tables is the “stressfree” environment for muscles and joints, especially for people who find it difficult to walk or lift weights. All exercises are performed while lying on a table that has free-moving parts that work specific muscle groups. Through passive repetitive movement, the table gently exercises one area of your body at a time, focusing mainly on large muscle groups. You can’t help but lose inches without having to punish yourself to get into shape. Tone and firm your body, with the tables taking all the strain. You do all your exercises lying down, reducing cellulite and inches at the same time.

I am delighted that so many readers are contemplating conifers as an addition in their garden, and am also thrilled with the questions I have received over the last week. Several readers have asked about specific situations in their garden, and what best to plant there. For example, is there a tall conifer suitable for a small garden? Absolutely! There are several which grow tall, but very narrow. Juniperus scopulorum ‘Blue Arrow’ and Juniperus ‘Sky Rocket’ are both types of juniper which remain skinny and they are also a beautiful blue colour. Cupressus sempervirens, the Italian cypress (or Pencil cypress) is also an excellent choice when space is an issue. These are also beautiful as structural plants; a cluster of three or five in a corner with rocks/ groundcover/ferns underneath can look striking. Also they are useful in corners, or to draw the eye in a particular direction. Remember the neighbours, though, when planting a tree which will grow tall! The second most popular question was in relation to rockeries. When planting conifers, or any shrubs in a rockery, we are not talking about an alpine rockery, but rather something many of us have in the garden. A slope, an awkward ditch, rocks with some soil or any spot which has poor soil! Again we can turn to the juniper. Juniperus communis ‘Green Mantle’ is a beautifully verdant, dense, low growing and spreading conifer, which really does seem to grow anywhere! Juniperus squamata ‘Blue Carpet’ is a lovely icy blue, which also grows low and spreads. One of my

favourite small but bushy conifers is the Chamaecyparis pisifer ‘Filifera Aurea’, which has stringy foliage. Or Cryptomeria ‘Spiralis’ - also called Grannies ringlets - which has branches growing in spirals. Many Podocarpus vaieties are beautiful too. ‘Chocolate Box’ has an auburn foliage (not to everyone’s liking indeed, the first box of chocolates my mum didn’t like!), or P. ‘Kilworth Cream’ is a ghostly whitish shade of green. These respond well to pruning, though they grow very slowly… Another question was, are there weeping conifers? Yes! A beauty is Juniperus recurva Coxii, also known by the cheery name of the Coffin Juniper, due to it’s use in Burma for the making of coffins. This will grow into a very large tree but is graceful and elegant. Abies alba Pendula is much like a weeping Christmas tree - a slow grower but, again, will grow large. The weeping Norway spruce, Picea abies ‘Frohburg’ is a compact, dense weeping tree, growing to about 2.5m. The great thing about this tree is that it is deer resistant! Conifers are so versatile, there really is one for every situation. However, the most popular question I was asked was, why are there brown patches on my conifers? If wind burn and disease can be ruled out, then usually we must look to our furry friends. Spot and whiskers are often the cause of unsightly brown patches, from which conifers usually do not recover. My only advice in this case is to plant small specimen plants in tall pots, or a motion activated water jet can be quite effective…

Ogier Dominates Monte Carlo Words: Cormac Casey

MOTORING Get In Gear With All The Latest Motoring News

The London Job

Britain’s biggest gold bullion refinery marked the opening of its new underground vault by sending its largest-ever bullion shipment, worth £10 million, across the capital in a trio of 300km/h Porsche Panamera estates, which also served to demonstrate the practicality and adaptability of Stuttgart’s big sports tourer. Baird is the UK’s largest gold refiner and though it normally uses armoured cars, it also occasionally uses normal cars when the move needs to be incognito. All this took place 50 years after the filming of the classic crime caper film The Italian Job starring Sir Michael Caine as amiable, small-time crook and antihero Charlie Croker. The Porsches were painted red, white and blue: the colours used for the Minis in the film. But this was “The London Job”. The Porsche Panamera Turbo Sport Turismo can accelerate from rest to 100km/h in just 3.6 seconds outpacing a Ferrari F40 - making it the perfect getaway car. But rather than steal the gold, as in the film, the job was to deliver it safely.

Last weekend’s WRC opener in Monte Carlo saw the current world champion, Sebastian Ogier, dominate the event from the start. The typical Monte Carlo conditions provided an incident packed season opener. Ogier’s dominance didn’t escape without a few scares, leading from the very beginning despite spinning on a chaotic, ice-affected, first stage, but his advantage over 2017 WRC team-mate Ott Tanak yo-yoed across both Friday and Saturday. A spin into a ditch on Friday afternoon meant Ogier only held a 14.9s lead heading into the weekend but he flew out of the blocks on Saturday and demolished Tanak by a minute on the tricky 18mile opening stage. Ogier managed the lead from then on.

Tanak settled for second followed by his teammate, Jari-Matti Latvala, in third. It was a fantastic result for the Toyota team. Local rally interest was on Kris Meeke and Paul Nagle. Going into the final stage in fifth place the Citroen crew had a stunning run through the powerstage that saw them quickest with fourth place Lappi next up. He slid off dropping him behind Meeke and Nagle who happily inherited fourth and five powerstage bonus points to boot. The points haul sees them with 17 points level with third place Latvala. A great result for the Citroen off the back of a difficult 2017 season. Other Irish interest was on Craig Breen. Unfortunately his rally was ruined early on with a brake problem in this Citroen DS3.

Alonso Aiming For Hamilton Reveals His Top Three F1 Rivals Triple Crown Two-time F1 champion Fernando Alonso will race at the Le Mans 24 Hours in 2018 and 2019 as part of a deal that will see him contest all but one World Endurance Championship race for Toyota this season.

The Spaniard has set himself the target of winning motorsport’s so-called ‘triple crown’ of Monaco Grand Prix, which he has won twice, Le Mans and the Indianapolis 500. Only Graham Hill has achieved the feat so far.

Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton has named the three drivers he sees as his biggest rivals on the current grand prix grid. Hamilton, who claimed the fourth

F1 championship crown of his career in 2017, identified McLaren’s Fernando Alonso, Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen as the three drivers he most has to watch out for.

In loving memory of a dear and wonderful Husband and Dad Denis Breen, late of Hazelwood Drive Upper, Park Road, Killarney, who died on 10th February 2017. On this the 1st anniversary of Denis, passing from this life, his wife Sheila and sons Michael, Denis, Billy, daughter Sheilamary and daughter-in-law Amy and all of Denis’s brothers and sisters who helped and journeyed with us through Denis’s short illness. Thanks to all those who supported us, sent mass cards, came to the funeral and cremation. Thanks to the doctors and nurses in University Hospital Kerry who looked after Denis.

Today recalls the memory Of Richard gone to rest, And those who think of him today, Are those who loved him best. The flowers we lay upon his grave, May wither and decay, But the love for him who lies beneath, Will never fade away. Loved and so sadly missed by Eileen, Annette, Lynda, Con, Gabhan, John, Julie, Nieces and Nephews.

In loving memory of a dear husband and Dad, Richard Clifford, late of Ballycasheen, Killarney who died on the 8th February 2014. We miss you now, our hearts are sore, As time goes by we miss you more. Your loving smile, your gentle face, No one can fill you vacant place. It broke our hearts to lose you, But you did not go alone, For part of us went with you. The day God called you home. We speak your name in love and pride, We thank you for the years we shared, The love you gave, the way you cared.

A light from our household is gone, A voice we loved is still, A place vacant in our home, That never can be filled.

Always remembered by the Ferris family. Lonely is the home without you, Life to us is not the same, The entire world would be like heaven, If we could have you back again. How dearly we loved you, And prayed you might live, But Jesus just beckoned And we had to give,

4th Anniversary Mass for Richard will be held on Sunday 4th February at 11am in The Church of The Resurrection.

In loving memory of Tim O’Sullivan late of Maughantourig Gneeveguilla, who died on 3rd of February 2012. R.I.P. In loving memory of Anne Marie O’Sullivan, late of Artigallivan, Who died on the 5th February 1999. You always had a smile to share, A laugh, a joke, a time to care, Each of us in our own way, Have special thoughts of you today. Always remembered by your loving mother-in-law and Seamus.

We think of you in silence, We often speak your name, But all we have are memories, And your picture in a frame. Your resting place we visit, Flowers we place with care, But no one knows the heartache, As we turn and leave you there. Sadly missed by PJ and Leo.

Recalled Casey Rescues Youthful Kerry There were a host of new faces on show but it was an older one who saved the day, writes Adam Moynihan Killarney’s own Daithí Casey came to Kerry’s rescue in the Park on Sunday as he stole in for a late, late winner in the opening game of the 2018 Allianz National League. Casey, who was one of the standout performers as his club Dr Crokes won the All-Ireland Club and County Championships in 2017, was introduced in the 55th minute against Donegal and caught the eye with a typically dynamic display. It was a significant moment for Casey who has thus far been unable to make his mark at senior intercounty level despite being called into the Kerry camp twice before, most recently in 2015. The powerful forward will be hoping to build on this match-winning cameo and nail down a spot in Eamonn Fitzmaurice’s squad on a long-term basis. In the end it was an excellent result for Kerry who handed debuts to no fewer than eight players yet still managed to overcome a dogged Donegal side hell-bent on stifling the home team’s ample attacking threat. Youngsters David Clifford, Micheál Burns and Seán O’Shea all started in the forward division along with the more experienced Stephen O’Brien, Paul Geaney and Barry John Keane and O’Shea looked particularly comfortable in his first outing at senior level. He kicked seven points (three from play) - including a crucial long range free when the game was in the melting pot - and the Kenmare man looked right at home in Kerry’s half forward line. There was a real buzz of excitement around the Fitzgerald Stadium when David Clifford got his first touch and he didn’t disappoint, setting up BJ Keane for Kerry’s opening score of the game. The Fossa prodigy also assisted Stephen O’Brien’s goal and generally showed well, despite being marshalled with savage intensity by Donegal defender Caolan Ward. One of the biggest cheers of the day came when Clifford swung over a first-half free to register his first ever point for the Kerry seniors. Donegal were dealt a major blow in the 20th minute when Nathan Mullins – son of Dublin legend Brian – received a straight red card for apparently kicking Brendan O’Sullivan off the ball. In fairness to the visitors, the numerical disadvantage barely seemed to affect them at all, especially going forward where they seemed to find openings in the

inexperienced Kerry back line at will. The Ulstermen, adopting an incredibly defensive formation, were holding their own and when Paul Geaney’s wild penalty miss was quickly followed by a goal from the excellent Odhran MacNiallais in the 56th minute, 14-man Donegal led by a goal. Kerry responded well and a scrappy Geaney goal, as well as points from O’Brien, O’Shea and substitute Killian Spillane, made it 2-16 to 2-14 as the game headed into additional time. The home support felt as though it was job done but Donegal, now playing with 13 men (to Kerry’s 14), looked to have snatched a famous win when Darach O’Connor knocked the ball past Shane Murphy within seconds of his introduction. It would have been a demoralising defeat for such a young Kerry team but Fitzmaurice’s charges showed great character, and composure, to edge forward in search of a result. Seánie O’Shea equalised with an expertly-taken free from distance before Casey stepped up to the mark by bursting through the Donegal defence and popping over a 75th minute game-clincher, much to the delight of the bumper 10,977 home crowd. All in all it was a good day at the office for Fitzmaurice and Kerry but one worrying point was the injury to James O’Donoghue. The Legion marksman was forced off with a calf strain just six minutes after being introduced as a second half substitute. Man of the Match: Paddy McBrearty was outstanding for Donegal but Paul Murphy gets the home vote. The Rathmore man covered every blade of grass and is without question one of Kerry’s most important players. Kerry scorers: Seán O’Shea 0-7 (0-4f), Paul Geaney 1-2 (0-1 pen), Stephen O’Brien 1-1, Barry John Keane 0-2, Ronan Shanahan, Micheál Burns, Gavin Crowley, Killian Spillane, D Clifford (0-1f), Daithí Casey (0-1 each). Donegal scorers: Patrick McBrearty 0-10 (0-8f), Odhran MacNiallais 1-2, Darach O’Connor, Tony McClenaghan (1-0 each), Stephen McBrearty, Jamie Brennan (0-1 each). Kerry: S Murphy; C Coffey, J Foley, S Enright; P Murphy, G Crowley, R Shanahan; Barry O’Sullivan, Brendan O’Sullivan; M Burns, S O’Shea, S O’Brien; D Clifford, P Geaney, BJ Keane. Subs: J Savage for Clifford (48), James O’Donoghue for Keane (48), D Casey for Barry O’Sullivan (55), K Spillane for O’Donoghue (55), M

Flaherty for Coffey (60), B ó Seanacháin for Burns (68). Donegal: MA McGinley; S McMenamin, E Bán Gallagher, C Ward; R McHugh, L McLoone, T McClenaghan; H McFadden, N Mullins; M O’Reilly, P Brennan, C McGonigle; P McBrearty, O MacNiallais, J Brennan. Mayo Up Next For New Look Kerry Kerry will be hoping to make it two from two tomorrow when they make the long journey up to Castlebar to face Mayo. Eamonn Fitzmaurice’s young guns made the ideal start with a last gasp victory over Donegal but Mayo are sure to provide an even sterner test. Stephen Rochford’s charges will have gained confidence from their hard-fought opening day win over Monaghan in Clones and will be hoping to inflict more pain upon Kerry following last year’s All-Ireland semi-final replay when they won by five points. There was a touch of good fortune surrounding their 0-13 to 0-12 victory in round one as a crucial last minute decision appeared to be called incorrectly by referee David Gough. Just seconds later, Paddy Durcan kicked the winning score. Ten of the team who lost the final to Dublin started the last day with top scorer Cillian O’Connor also

making an appearance off the bench so, in terms of personnel at least, Mayo appear to be better-equipped for a clash of this magnitude. Kerry gave debuts to eight players on Sunday and many of those lads

are likely to feature again this weekend. There’s no love lost between the teams so tomorrow will be a great experience for newcomers like Seán O’Shea and David Clifford. It will be interesting to see how they fare against a top team in the pressure cooker atmosphere of MacHale Park.

Brady Can Make Super Bowl History Super Bowl LII

New England Patriots v Philadelphia Eagles

Legendary New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady is no stranger to making history and if he leads his side to victory in Super Bowl 52 on Sunday, another long-standing NFL record will fall. In 51 years of the Super Bowl, no QB has ever led the league in passing yards AND won the famous Lombardi trophy in the same year. In the Super Bowl era (1966-present), the NFL’s passing leader has only made it to the big finale a total of five times and, remarkably, none of those players have ever emerged victorious. That list of defeated quarterbacks actually includes Brady, who led the NFL in passing yards in 2007 (the same year the Pats went 16-0) but ended up losing to the New York Giants in Super Bowl XLII. Peyton Manning, Rich Gannon, Kurt Warner and Dan Marino are the other victims of the passing yards curse. Reigning champions New England are 1/2 favourites to prevail this time out although they’ll have their work cut out against Philadelphia who were the number one seeds going into the play-offs

The game will be played in Minneapolis at US Bank Stadium, which has just hosted its second Minnesota Vikings season after being built in time for the 2016 campaign. The stadium seats 66,200 but can be expanded to fit up to 70,000 people. It is just the sixth time the Super Bowl has been held in a cold weather city. The stadium has a fixed roof to shield the players from the elements.

Justin Timberlake will headline the Pepsi Super Bowl LII Halftime Show. It’s not Timberlake’s first appearance at the Super Bowl: he also who performed with NSYNC in 2001 and infamously starred in 2004 when he caused a ‘wardrobe malfunction’ which inadvertently exposed fellow performer Janet Jackson’s breast. Last year’s show was the mostwatched musical event of all-time, reaching more than 150 million unique people worldwide.

Beckham Launches His Own Soccer Club Manchester United legend David Beckham has launched his long-planned Major League Soccer club in Miami. The team, which is yet to be named, will play in a 25,000-seater stadium in the Overtown area of the city. with a 13-3 season record. The Eagles were crowned NFC champions following a 38-7 victory over the Minnesota Vikings, who would have been the first team to play a Super Bowl on home soil had they won. Former Kansas City Chiefs QB Nick Foles threw three touchdown passes in that conference final as he guided his side to a Super Bowl just a few months after they lost star quarterback Carson Wentz to a serious knee injury.

in the league”. In a video shown at the launch, Beckham was congratulated by sports superstars Serena Williams, Tom Brady and Usain Bolt, as well as by other celebrities like Jay-Z, Will Smith, and Jennifer Lopez. Los Angeles FC will become the 23rd MLS franchise in 2018 with the league planning to eventually increase the number of teams to 28. Miami aren’t expected to play until 2020.

Cleveland Indians To Remove “Racist” Logo Baseball team the Cleveland Indians have announced that they will be dropping the divisive Chief Wahoo logo from their uniforms following many years of complaints. The emblem, which depicts a cartoonish, red-faced Native American, is considered by many people to be racist. The announcement came after talks between owner Paul Dolan and MLB commissioner Rob Manfred. The move is seen as a step in the right direction but many are

questioning the decision to not remove the logo until the 2019 season. The club also revealed that merchandise featuring Chief Wahoo will continue to be sold, even after it’s taken off the players uniforms.

Sports Stars Honoured At Killarney Municipal District Awards

The breadth of talent and achievement of local teams and individuals were recognised at the Killarney Municipal District Annual Awards which were recently held at Killarney House. Six All-Ireland-winning teams were honoured at a reception by Municipal District councillors and received an award and commemorative scroll marking the occasion. The Cathaoirleach of Killarney Municipal District, Cllr Niall Kelleher, said the awards were aimed at “recognising those who contribute greatly to our society in the Killarney area, people who excel in their sport or profession, groups who provide worthy and important services, and individuals and groups who make our community a better place. Kerry County Council places a great value on the work of community and voluntary groups, on sport and recreations and on those who work for enhanced community integration and social cohesion.” Speaking to the recipients, Municipal District Manager, Angela McAllen, said: “These awards are our way of saying thank you for what you do, our way of acknowledging your achievements, and our way of commending you for what you do in the community. I hope that these awards will encourage each of you to continue to do what you do and to continue to enhance our community in the Killarney Municipal District. The first recipient was Killarney Ladies Senior Golfing Teams and this award was presented on the proposal of Cllr Michael Gleeson. 2017 was a marvellous year for the Killarney Golf Club Ladies Teams. The Ladies Senior Cup Team, managed by Mary Geaney, won the Senior Cup for the very first time beating Royal Portrush in the final at Royal Curragh. A few weeks later in Belfast, the Ladies Senior Foursome Team, managed by Claire Keating, won the Senior Four-

somes Final beating Roscommon in a dramatic finish and a one-hole playoff. It is the first time ever in the history of the ILGU that any club has won two All-Ireland Titles in the same year. The next award, proposed by Cllr John Joe Culloty, was presented to the Ladies Crew of the Workmen’s Rowing Club, Killarney. The crew won four titles in the All-Ireland Coastal Rowing Championships in Donegal in 2017, under 18, under 21, Junior Ladies and Senior Ladies. In addition, they achieved the double at the Killarney Regatta, winning the coveted Senior Ladies Six and Senior Four having come directly to Killarney from an early morning regatta in Cork. Workmen’s Rowing Club has been fortunate in the last number of years to have a very successful Junior Ladies Section. This is largely due not only to their own effort but also to the hard work and dedication of coaches and coxes over the long winter months. The club acknowledges the support of key personnel like Pat O’Donoghue, Hanna O’Donoghue, Mary Moynihan Burns and Timmy Moynihan, head coach Michael J Burns and cox Michael O’Donoghue for their invaluable part in the successes the ladies have achieved over the years. The Spa GAA Dancing Team who were the Scór na nÓg All-Ireland Set Dancing Champions of 2017 received an award on the proposal of Cllr Michael Gleeson. This set won

their All Ireland Scór na nÓg title in the Waterfront Arena in Belfast on February 11 last. They won East Kerry, Kerry and Munster titles on their path to the All-Ireland final where they faced very strong opposition from Galway, Derry and Westmeath teams. The next recipient was the St Brendan’s College senior football team who received their award on the proposals of Cllr Brendan Cronin, Maura Healy-Rae and Niall Kelleher. The team retained the All-Ireland Colleges title with an eight-point victory over Leinster champions St Peter’s College, Wexford in Croke Park in April. This is the school’s second straight Hogan Cup title and their fourth overall title. Next was the St Brendan’s College U-15 schoolboys team who received their award on the proposal of Cllrs Brendan Cronin and Cllr Niall Kelleher. The U-15 St Brendan’s Soccer Squad were Munster and All-Ireland Champions in 2017. In the Munster

Final they defeated Blarney 3-0 and went on to national success beating Deele College of Donegal 2-1 in a nail-biting final held in Home Farm, Dublin. Deele College lead 1-0 early in the first half, but an equaliser from Ryan O’Grady made it 1-1 on the stroke of halftime and a late second half free kick from Emmett O’Shea secured victory. This was the college’s third Munster and All-Ireland success in the past four years. St Brendan’s were also invited to represent the Republic of Ireland in the famous Allen McKinstry Cup both in 2014 and 2017 held respectively in Lillishall, England and Swansea, Wales. The final award was presented to St Brigid’s Presentation Secondary School Junior basketball team on the proposal of Cllr Donal Grady. The team were crowned All-Ireland Junior A basketball champions in the National Arena in Tallaght, Dublin, on May 2. This was a fantastic achievement given that there were in excess of 340 post primary girls schools registered for the schools competition. The panel of 18 girls (comprising 16 2nd year students and two 1st year students) were coached by Kate Donnellan and teacher Emma Bunworth. In the All-Ireland semi-final held in the National Arena the Pres team were drawn against Scoil Chríost Rí, Portlaoise whom they defeated 42-38. In the final the Pres team played Malahide winning on a scoreline of 37-27.

Celts Join Blues At The Top Of The Table Killarney Celtic have joined bitter rivals Killarney Athletic at the summit of the Premier A following a 4-2 win over Castleisland in Celtic Park. Goals from Peter McCarthy (penalty) and Danny Roche were cancelled out by a brace from Tommy Feehan and with 20 minutes to go, the game was right in the mixer. Wayne Sparling put the hosts ahead in the 74th minute and as Island desperately searched for an equaliser, Danny Roche put the result beyond doubt with another well-taken goal in the 93rd

minute. Meanwhile, Athletic’s game against Mastergeeha was a victim of the weather and will have to be played at a later date. In the Greyhound Bar KO Cup, Tralee Dynamos suffered another heavy defeat as they lost 10-0 to Dingle Bay Rovers. Celtic and Athletic are now tied first on 19 points although Eoghan Donnellan’s side still have two games in hand. With the top two teams advancing to the league final and Dingle, Fenit and Castleisland all three points back in joint third, it’s certainly all to play for in the Premier A.

Fixtures:

Sunday, February 4 Premier A Fenit v Killarney Celtic (11.30am) Greyhound Bar KO Cup 1st Round Mastergeeha v Mainebank (2pm) Premier B AC Athletic v Killarney Celtic B (11.30am) Division 1A Sporting Listowel v Ballyhar Dynamos (11.30am) Inter Kenmare B v Cedar Galaxy (2pm) Division 1B Castlegregory Celtic v Killarney Athletic B (11.30am)

Sem To Face Dingle In Munster Semi-Final The Sem and Dingle have claimed the last six Munster championships between them and on Sunday they’ll go head-tohead once again with a Corn Uí Mhuirí final place up for grabs. The Killarney school is, of course, in search of three in a row in Munster and in the Hogan Cup following a massively successful couple of years. The Sem have very much taken up the reins from Dingle who won four Corn Uí Mhuiris between 2012 and 2015 as well as two All-Irelands in 2014 and 2015. This will be the fourth meeting between the sides in the past twelve months with Garry McGrath’s charges just edging the head-tohead at the moment. The Sem knocked their Kerry rivals out in the quarter-final stage of this competition last January on a 2-18 to 0-9 scoreline and the new crop of Sem players also defeated Dingle in the O’Sullivan Cup Final in December. It was St Brendan’s fifth consecutive Kerry colleges title. The other encounter between the two finished in a stalemate as they played out thrilling draw (Dingle 3-10 Sem 0-19) in the group stage of the 2017/18 Corn Uí Mhuirí. Brendan’s earned their place in the last four with a 0-17 to 0-13 victory over De La Salle, Macroom last month with Cian Gammell, who was one of the stars of the 2017 Hogan Cup run, playing a key role. Dingle, meanwhile, dismantled ISK in their quarter-final, running out 0-16 to 1-7 winners. There appears to be very little between the teams this year so Sunday’s game promises to be a fiercely-contested affair.

Fixture:

Sunday, February 4 at 2pm The St Brendan’s College senior football team who were recently honoured at the Killarney Municipal awards. Back: Cian Gamell, Lorcan McMonagle, Hugh Rudden, Arthur Fitzgerald, Garry McGrath, Seán O’Leary and Barry Slattery. Front: Angela McAllen, Cllr Niall Kelleher, Dara Moynihan (2017 captain) and Cllr Brendan Cronin.

Rugby News ... Ireland Fans Baffled By Zebo Exclusion Words: Liam Murphy

The NatWest 6 Nations kicks off in earnest tomorrow with Wales taking on Scotland at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff at 2.15pm in what should be a cracker. Meanwhile, Ireland travel to Paris to take on the French at 4.45pm. Ireland will hope to beat the French who are under a new coach and enter the match following seven matches without a win. Ronan O’Gara mused lately that the French are “in a mess” and it’s hard to disagree with him although they will be looking for results and Ireland will do well

not to write them off. Last week Joe Schmidt named his 37man squad ahead of the tournament and will be hoping to capitalise on the form of the provincial players having watched Munster and Leinster qualify for the last eight of the European Cup. Leinster’s Jordan Lamour is the only uncapped addition to the squad as Joe plays it safe. Seán O’Brien is the big name missing due to injury. However it was the omission of Simon Zebo that grabbed the headlines and the ire of Munster fans. Joe quoted Zebo’s recent form as the main reason for his exclusion, which is

mind-baffling to be honest given his recent performances for Munster. Schmidt singled out his performance in Paris recently. Not selecting a player based on a single game is dangerous and one wonders if this criteria is the same for all players? Zebo, who recently signed to Racing 92 for next season, has said that he struggled within Schmidt’s rigid game plan. Perhaps it was this comment that ultimately got him dropped. One can only guess. Finally the first round of the 6 Nations finishes on Sunday as Eddie Jones’ England face Conor O’Shea’s Italy at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome at 4pm. All in all, a thrilling weekend of rugby that’s not to be missed.

Killarney Toastmasters Club We had a very large attendance at our meeting, with over 40 people in the room. The atmosphere was electric and we had a wonderful meeting. Our Toastmaster for the night, Mary, welcomed our guests. Mary then introduced our Table Topics Master, Gerard. He began with some very light hearted topics, asking members if they had kept their new year’s resolutions, and what it was they really liked about Toastmasters. There were plenty of add ons from both members and guests. We had four prepared speeches tonight. All were entertaining and informative. Yolande told us about her experience of cultural diversity in Africa and now here in Ireland. Ciara told us about an upcoming school trip to China. Renee told us about the Dutch love of cheese. Jan delivered an editorial about the Trees on the Land Project (see video below). Debby told us about her experience leading the Youth Leadership Programme in a Killarney School. She then presented certificates to her assistants Miriam and Paul. Our next meeting will be held on Tuesday 13th February at 8pm in the Dromhall Hotel, Killarney. Guests are especially welcome.

Spa Muckross Community Games U11 MIXED BASKETBALL: Congrats to our team who won silver at the county competition held at Nagle Rice Hall in Milltown last Saturday. Against Firies in our opening game it

Sport

was a tight affair, that finished level at full time. One period of overtime saw our team emerge with victory by 4 points. In the second game, which was against Milltown/Listry, the team dominated from the early stages and ran out comfortably in the end in a score line of 13-3. Being unbeaten in the group stages meant we finished top and progressed to the semi final against a fancied Ballymac side. Whilst it was nip and tuck in the opening exchanges, we slowly built up a lead and ran out worthy winners on a score line of 19-10. In the final we faced an also unbeaten side Castleisland. We started very well, racing into a 8-1 lead just before half time. Unfortunately the tide started to turn as we got into foul trouble and our opponents visited the free throw line often with quite some success. Despite coming up short in the final, we are very proud of our young boys and girls who battled fiercely and represented our community very well. Well done to all involved. Thanks to Spa GAA club for the use of their hall for training, and to the volunteers that ensured the competition ran smoothly last weekend.
