PAGE SIX Killarney Remembers Brave And Beautiful Amy O’Connor The town of Killarney is in mourning following the sad passing of brave local girl Amy O’Connor. She was just 11 years of age. Amy, who had been battling cancer since 2016, passed away peacefully at her Whitebridge Manor home last weekend, a year after helping Dr Crokes captain Johnny Buckley lift the All-Ireland club football trophy in Croke Park. The O’Connor family issued a touching message expressing their gratitude to the Lewis Road club, saying: “When you’re dealing with cancer, a daily dose of inspiration can make a big difference in your outlook on life during your cancer journey. Being around people who inspire, challenge, and make you feel better helps bring perspective and optimism to

the situation.” Since her untimely death, tributes have flooded in for the courageous young girl from friends, clubs and organisations the length and breadth of the country. Speaking to a crowded St Mary’s Cathedral at the funeral on Wednesday, Amy’s mother Triona said her daughter “loved with her whole heart.” “It was an honour to be the mother of such a beautiful soul,” she continued. “Her courage and her unyielding desire to beat the monster that was trying to steal her from us was nothing short of inspiring.” Amy is survived by her parents, Brendan and Triona, brother Cian, grandparents Pat, Winnie, Michael and Nuala, her aunts, uncles, cousins, teammates, classmates at Gaelscoil Faithleann and friends.

Tadg’s Generosity Was At The Heart Of His Business & Community

Words: Cormac Casey Pic: Riona MacMonagle | kerryphoto.com This week we learnt of the passing of Tadg O’Donoghue of Barraduff village. Tadg was the well-known proprietor of O’Donoghue’s Foodmarket in Barraduff village. My first encounter with Tadg was as a teenage cyclist. Tadg had the Raleigh Cycles agency at this time. As a young cyclist in the mid-eighties, Tadg’s shop was a stop off point for refreshments on our route. Ever the salesman, he was always on hand to upsell the latest offerings in the Raleigh Cycles range. Tadg was always very proud of his cycles business, boasting his status as Kerry’s number one Raleigh agent. On many an occasion Tadg would have helped a few of us cash-strapped budding cyclists with a puncture repair kit or inner tube to see us home and trusted payment would be returned in due course. Today I am a customer of O’Donoghue’s Foodmarket and always mindful of Tadg’s generosity in my youth. As parents, we always like to share with our kids experiences we had as kids, and Tadhg delivered the same generosity to my kids as he delivered to me some 30 years earlier. A visit to Tadg’s for my kids raised the high probability that if the man himself was behind the counter, the ‘penny’ sweet counter was within their grasp. I was powerless over Tadg’s open invitation to the ‘penny’ sweet counter, the bag was full in seconds. I’m confident he never charged the full value of this bulging bag of sweets but he got great satisfaction in seeing the joy in the faces of these sugar fiends. Tadg was never short of a word even when the shop was busy. He was a hive of information - NOT gossip, mind you. Tadg had the facts. Visiting on quieter occasions we would get stuck into a topic or two and time would disappear. I remember on one occasion I went to Tadg’s to get popcorn for movie night. By the time I got home the movie was over, the kids were asleep in bed and a search party was on the brink of deployment. His genuine generosity and interest in people was at the heart of his business and community. He will be missed. Our deepest sympathy to his wife Ursula, daughters Augustine, Maura, Martina, Ave, Julianna, sons Donal and Michael, grandchildren Picabia, Jonathan, Rhiannon, Tadg Óg, Seán and David. May he rest in peace.

Happy 45th Birthday To The Killarney Advertiser Words: Adam Moynihan

Like any Killarney person born in the last 45 years, the Advertiser has always been a part of my life. I don’t ever remember not having one in the house, and I don’t remember a Friday evening when I didn’t want to get my hands on one. It has constantly been there. I still have the clipping from when my name first appeared in the Advertiser. I was nine and we had just won the Kerry Cup with Athletic. I still recall how excited we were to see our names in print. That small snippet in Killarney Notes was as good as the front cover of the Irish Times as far as we were con-

cerned. We thought we were famous. Within a couple of years my manager had asked me to come up with the reports for our games myself, so the first piece of writing I ever had published was in the Killarney Advertiser. It was exciting to see something I had created in a real magazine, even if no one apart from my teammates knew it was me who had written it. That little buzz of creating and sharing my work is probably something that has stayed with me throughout my life and now things have come full circle. All these years later, I’m back writing for the Advertiser. It hasn’t gone any-

where. In fact, it’s probably more influential today than it has ever been. As the most popular Killarney-based publication in circulation, it plays a hugely important role in informing and connecting the people of the town and for the thousands of expatriates who check it out online every week, it provides an important link to home. The visionary Danny Casey, father of current Director Cormac, set the wheels in motion in 1973, making the Killarney Advertiser the second oldest magazine of its kind in the country (by a few weeks) and the oldest that’s

still in the hands of the original family owners. As a forward-thinking man himself, I’m sure Danny would approve of the Advertiser’s current commitment to embracing new forms of media such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, as well as coming up with innovative video projects like Kieran Healy’s Chatroom. On a personal note I’d like to congratulate Cormac and his wife Noelle on the continued success of the Killarney Advertiser and say that it’s a privilege to be part of such a progressive and culturally significant publication.

TOWNTALK Kerry Hoteliers Upbeat For 2018 Hotel and guesthouse owners in Kerry and across the country are reporting a good start to the year according to an industry survey undertaken by the Irish Hotels Federation (IHF) in advance of its 80th Annual Conference in the Slieve Russell Hotel, Co Cavan. Most are forecasting an increase in business levels for 2018 with advance bookings up from domestic and key overseas markets, helping to offset the drop in bookings from the UK, Ireland’s largest market, where visitor numbers continue to fall. The high cost of doing business, including insurance, continues to be a major concern. Seven in ten (72%) hoteliers say their overall business levels are up compared to this time last year, with a similar number (68%) reporting an increase in advance bookings for the remainder of the year. Business levels from the US look set to remain strong with over half of hoteliers surveyed reporting an increase in business from this market. Visitor numbers are up too from continental Europe with almost a third (32%) reporting an increase in business from Germany and nearly a quarter (23%) seeing a rise from France. Closer to home the domestic market remains buoyant with almost seven in ten (67%) of hoteliers seeing an increase in home-grown business. However, in contrast, the UK market remains a significant concern with over half (56%) of hoteliers reporting a drop in business from Great Britain compared to this time last year and almost four in ten seeing a drop

from Northern Ireland. Patrick O’Donoghue, Chair, Kerry branch of the Irish Hotels Federation said that overall hoteliers are confident about the outlook for 2018, but not complacent. “The increase in business levels that we are seeing from key international markets and from within Ireland itself, following on from strong growth in recent years, gives us some confidence. However, the negative effect on visitor numbers from the weakened sterling and uncertainty over Brexit reminds us that we’re an island nation, dependent on the vagaries of other, larger economies, and there is never room for complacency,” he said. Tourism currently supports 11,900 jobs in Kerry and contributes some €508 million to the local economy annually. “We operate in a price sensitive sector where we compete with the UK for overseas visitors. A sustained fall in sterling could have a negative effect on visitor numbers from other markets who may opt instead to go to the UK. Cost-competitiveness is critical. Government cannot influence the economic conditions affecting other countries but there is a wide policy range of measures within their control that can enhance competitiveness. The 9% VAT rate and zero travel tax, for example, have been hugely significant in underpinning the recovery of the tourism sector. However, more needs to be done to bring down the high costs that are stifling business in Ireland such as insurance, where the costs are now so high they are a significant concern for almost nine in ten

hoteliers (88%),” he said. Mr O’Donoghue added, “It is important that there is a continued commitment to enhancing and developing the experiences that we offer visitors - from at home and overseas. The hotel sector has an important role to play here and, as our member survey highlights, most hoteliers across the country are planning to invest in their properties this year – from expansion in some cases, to refurbishment, or investing in new technology to upgrade existing operational and guest services. “But, it’s also about market diversification and reinvigorating our tourism

brand, to create compelling offers that appeal to new markets while at the same time helping us to consolidate our market share in existing markets. More needs to be done, especially in regional tourism marketing. There are parts of the country like the Shannon Corridor, which have much to offer and with the right support they could expand Ireland’s tourism offering and greatly benefit the rural economy,” he added. According to the IHF survey, two thirds of hoteliers are already planning to increase their own marketing spend during 2018 in a bid to attract more visitors to their areas.

Killarney Hotels Are Ready To Do Business In New York Six Irish tourism companies, including Killarney Hotels, are attending SMU (Successful Meetings University) International, which takes place this week in New York. The three-day event attracts around 100 top American MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences and events) professionals, all on the lookout for exciting and unique business tourism destinations. “Events like SMU International are an important platform to continue to build awareness of the island of Ireland and our world-class business tourism offering. Business tourism is the most lucrative form of tourism, with visitors travelling to Ireland for business purposes spending about

2.5 times more than the average holidaymaker,” said Alison Metcalfe, Tourism Ireland’s Head of North America. “In 2017, we welcomed a record 1.83 million North American visitors to the island of Ireland. In 2018, we are confident that our strategy – combined with more airline seats than ever before from the US, as well as the strength and competitiveness of the vacation experience right around the island of Ireland – will deliver further growth. Our aim is to deliver a +5% increase in visitor numbers and +7% increase in revenue from North America in 2018. We look forward to welcoming more of our great friends Johanna Platt and David Cronin of Killarney Hotels with Marie McKown, Tourism Ireland at from the United States this year and SMU International in New York. in the years to come.”

Truly Diverse Are Kerry Wedding Band Of The Year

There was a spot of good news for our own Kieran Healy this week as his popular band Truly Diverse scooped a prestigious gong at the inaugural Brides of Kerry Industry Awards. The lavish event, which took place at the Ballyroe Heights Hotel, was organised to celebrate all the amazing people who make that special day even more special. As well as the cream of the crop of the Kerry wedding industry, superstar fashion designer and Ballyheigue native Don O’Neill and husband Pascal Guillermie flew in from New York to be in attendance on the night. As guests of honour they were serenaded by Killarney contralto Grace Foley with a spine-tingling rendition of Nella Fantasia and a heartbreaking version of Kieran Goss’s Reasons to Leave. Killarney was well-represented on

the night with The Trant sisters from Aghadoe picking up Best Wedding Ceremony Musicians, Best Wedding Band went to popular choice Truly Diverse while the legend that is Pat O’Neill picked up Wedding Hair Stylist of the Year. Killarney hotels were also represented well with The Heights Hotel, Killarney picking up Bridal Suite of the Year, The Brehon picking up Wedding Spa of the Year and the Killarney Oaks picking up Best Family Owned Venue of the Year. Honeymoon Specialist of the Year went to Torc Travel while Grace Foley picked up a 5 Star Award. Kerry Wedding Venue of the Year was jointly shared between The Brehon and Ballygarry House Hotel. All in all, the awards night was a huge success with organisers, guests and award winners thoroughly enjoying the night. Everyone is already looking forward to next year’s event.

NEWS Those Intoxicating Liquor Laws In Killarney

14

02.03.18

Opinion: Anne Lucey Well, it’s big news now that Mick Wallace the Wexford TD has stood up in the Dáil and said there is something rotten about the prosecution outcomes of late night liquour licensing laws in Killarney. Plenty of Kerry TDs could have raised that too, if they were so inclined. I touched on that story over a year ago – November and December 2016 – about an internal garda investigation into a whistleblower’s allegations that gardaí were being offered vouchers by a publican. It was called Vouchergate. I followed it with the stats of the low numbers of costly late night exemption orders being applied for in Killarney, a tourist town with several late night bars. The gardaí said

News

high numbers were coming in that December because of an economic upturn and 2016 figures would be higher. The story referred to by Mick Wallace in the Dáil that on December 20, 2016, that Killarney gardaí were quoted in the Irish Examiner as saying, without a hint of irony, they have “a tough approach to late night drinking and drunkenness in the town - and to compliance with the liquor licensing laws”, is my story on those special exemptions, as part of that Vouchergate story. In the wake of Vouchergate, people in the guards who used to co-operate with me no longer did. My phone calls were not answered. The odd nod I used to get stopped abruptly. Apparently they did not like the headline in the Irish Times. But can I ask: does journalism now need to stand behind the Dáil before it reports what the dogs on the streets know? Perhaps it does. Because even if you get the story right, and it is no question of the draconian libel laws we all labour under, you can be squeezed out as

a journalist, a profession in which silence is deafening. I, as a lone wolf, found very little co-operation for well over a year. Yet I had a clear story from multiple sources, even from within the industry, that some bars in this town were getting away with it, openly, and had been with years without any apparent fear, while others

towed the line. The internal investigation, by the way, found nothing untoward, I am told. And a tougher approach is being taken with liquor laws, now, I am told. I am glad to report that I seem to be back in favour with the local constabulary... For now.

Words: Adam Moynihan

Killarney A “Basket Case” For After Hours Speaking in the Dáil, Independent TD Mick Wallace has claimed that Kerry and Killarney in particular is a “basket case” when it comes to the enforcement of liquor licensing laws. The Wexford TD said he had met with a garda whistleblower who had been “chewed up and spat out” by the system after making shocking claims about Killarney gardaí, specifically that certain bar owners were “allowed to run pubs with immunity”. “In May 2016, the whistleblower encountered an after hours street brawl

during which the premises continued to serve patrons. After dealing with the brawl, the garda confronted the publican. About a week later he was reprimanded by an inspector for harassing this serial offending publican,” Wallace claimed. “I do not believe for a second that Killarney is the only place that has a problem with the licensing laws but County Kerry in general

does seem to be a basket case when it comes to prosecuting cases in the District Court,” he said. “The conviction rate for the whole of County Kerry in 2016 was 3%,” he added. In 2016, there were 26 prosecutions in Kerry alone, but none resulted in convictions. Gardaí have said that the licensing laws are strictly enforced in a fair and responsible manner.

From a local’s perspective, the only time I hear people complaining about an “after hours problem” is at half two in the morning when they can’t find after hours. On a serious note, alcohol abuse is a major issue in this country and by the time the bars officially close, I’m sure the majority have us have already exceeded our recommended daily dose. In an ideal world, we wouldn’t need laws to tell us when to stop drinking. But try telling that to some young lad who’s after eight pints and five vodka Red Bulls.

Who Let The Dogs Out? Words: Anne Lucey Our only town councillor, Cllr Donal Grady, is calling for parity of esteem between dogs and horses in Killarney. It seems that apart from one or two mavericks among the jarveys, the issue of horse dung has been truly tackled. The paths and park walkways are clean, at least of horse droppings, for cyclists and for parents with buggies and for walkers. But amidst reports from neighbouring Cork that there is to be a ban on dogs in some town walkways to tackle persistent dog fouling, we have to ask what is wrong in Killarney? Persistent cries are being ignored. Dog droppings are far more dangerous to human health - bringing all kinds of eye and other diseases - but there is no notice taken of them as far as the authorities in this town, and this includes the National Park, are concerned. Cllr Donal is saying while there are staffing issues in the park with regard to policing, the local authority has within its remit the ability to appoint a specific dog warden or instruct other officials to take on the issue on the Countess Road, in estates, as well as at the entrance to the National Park. So why not do that? Dogs are not being kept in control in Killarney. Even judging by the number of ‘pets’ that go missing on walks and from back gardens. There is one popular social media site that is like a lost and found for Killarney dogs. Some of these pets are dangerous breeds and I would not like to meet one of them. The underlying story is these so-called pets are being left off the leash and unmuzzled. Speaking of which, I met a well known Killarney lady near Killarney House ten days ago and the sleeve of her jacket was all ripped after an encounter with an unmuzzled Alsation in the National Park. There is a large sign near the Demesne, as there is near the new entrance in Muckross, about dangerous breeds needing to be muzzled and all dogs needing to be on the leash. I don’t know whether the dog or the owner is the one who can’t read, but these signs are very visible and very legible. I constantly encounter dogs off-leash. I constantly meet owners smiling at me angelically, stopped while their dogs do the business by their side and not a pooper scooper in sight. Now back to Cllr Grady. Horses don’t generally go around biting people and they are too busy working for a living to be bothered any further with humans. But the authorities weren’t long bringing the jarveys to the High Court to get

action. Why can’t there be the same approach to out of control dogs and their owners? All puns intended, Cllr Grady says it’s time to rein the dogs in too. A reminder from Kerry County Council’s own web site: Under the Control of Dogs Regulations 1998, the following breeds have been identified as being potentially dangerous, therefore, at all times in public places these breeds must be securely muzzled, on a sufficiently strong chain/leash not exceeding 2m in length and in the control of a person over 16 years who is capable of controlling the dog. American Pit Bull Terrier, English Bull Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Bull Mastiff, Doberman Pinscher, German Shepherd (Alsatian), Rhodesian Ridgeback, Rottweiler Japanese Akita, Japanese Tosa, to every dog of the type commonly known as a Ban Dog (or Bandog), and to every other strain or cross of every breed or type of dog described in this article. And under Section 22 of the Litter Pollution Act 1997, it is an offence to allow a dog under your control to foul a public place. As the owner or person in charge of the dog you are required under this law to remove dog faeces and dispose of it in a suitable, sanitary manner. Failure to clean up after your dog can lead to “on the spot” fines and/ or prosecution. If you wish to report dog fouling as a problem in your area, phone 066 716 2000 or email environ@ kerrycoco.ie.

International Women’s Day

KBN To Celebrate Women In All Spheres On International Women’s Day, KBN invites you to celebrate the achievements of women in all spheres of life. This year’s theme, Cultural Transformation, sets out to remind us that gender equality, inclusion and diversity remains a significant challenge, one that is hindering potential competitiveness, growth and prosperity. A lot of efforts and progress have been registered at regional, national and international levels towards achieving empowering women and elevating them politically, economically, socially, and culturally. In Kerry we look forward to a bright future with even more women in higher-wage jobs throughout high-growth sectors. Our event, Cultural Transformation is comprised of a morning session of thought-provoking presentations held by inspirational women who are leaders in their field, followed by lunch in a dynamic networking environment. One such leader is Orla Coughlan. Orla is member of the leadership team of 30% Club Ireland whose focus has become synonymous with building gen-

der balance on boards. The 30% Club is working towards having women in 30% of key leadership positions by 2030. The club does not believe mandatory quotas are the right approach. Instead, it supports a voluntary approach in order to realise meaningful, sustainable change.

The event is open to all and not only highlighted by strong keynote speakers in the domains of women in business but also women changing the world in other spheres. Joanne O’Riordan, who will place emphasis on the need for inclusion, is a woman who spearheaded a campaign against cuts to disability which led to her appearance on RTÉ’s Late Late Show.

Celtic Whiskey

Joanne is one of seven people suffering from a rare disease known as Tetra-amelia syndrome. The Irish Times described her TV appearance as “one of the guests on the show in recent years who has made the most impact on viewers”. In 2012 Joanne received a standing ovation for her address to the United Nations on the use of technology, where she challenged those present to build a robot for her to use. Later her brother made a film on her life titled “No Limbs No Limits”. Other speakers include Tammy Darcy, founder of the Shona Project. Shona has devoted her energies into ensuring that women and girls must have the tools they need to succeed. Sinéad Devlin from Belfast will cover the controversial topic of “Unconscious Bias”. The session investigates the unconscious feelings we have towards other people. Sinéad believes that unconscious feelings can play a strong part in influencing our judgement of certain people and groups, away from being balanced or even-handed in many different areas of life.

Music

The morning aptly kicks off with Lisa Fingleton. Lisa is the Project Coordinator of Moving On, a new employment project for women in Kerry who wish to return to work. The project supports women through training, work experience and direct links with employers. Lisa has over 20 years experience in promoting equality and inclusion across all sectors. MC for the event is Fiona Stack, General Manager of Kerry Radio and Fiona will also chair the panel discussion, which will allow delegates to engage with our guest speakers. The event will be held in The Brehon Hotel in Killarney and starts at 9.30am with refreshments on arrival. Organisers and promoters of KBN say they are working diligently to encourage women to enter and succeed in the workforce while addressing the many barriers women still face in achieving economic success, including those that impede women’s access to capital, markets, and networking opportunities. Tickets for the event cost between €10 and €25 are available online at kbnwomensday.eventbrite.ie

From The Hills Of Trant Sisters Hit The Right Notes Antrim To The Kingdom Of Kerry Last Tuesday evening, Bushmills in Antrim (Ireland’s oldest licensed distillery dating back to 1608) paid a visit to the Kingdom. At the Celtic Whiskey Bar & Larder, Global Brand Ambassador Séamus Lowry conducted a Bushmills 10-year-old deconstruction as well as a tasting of some of their highly sought after premium expressions. The evening commenced with a welcome tipple of their latest release, Bushmills Red Bush, which would whet the appetite for what would follow. Whiskey novices and enthusiasts were then introduced to Bushmills New Make Spirit at a jaw-dropping 83.4% which was then followed by a Bushmills 10-year-old deconstruction - from a 5-year-old bourbon whiskey to a 10-year-old sherry, this undoubtedly illustrated the broad range of flavour and complexity in the 10-year-old single malt. It was no surprise that the 16-year-old and 21-year-old Bushmills were the highlights of the evening, with both expressions becoming exceedingly rare and known for their distinct fruity character. Next on the bar’s calendar is a whiskey barrel-aged beer tasting with Joe Kearns from White Hag Brewing and our very own Alan O’Donovan on Thursday, March 22 at 7.30pm. Tickets are €10 and are available at Celtic Whiskey Bar & Larder. Sláinte!

Since their schooldays at the Holy Cross Mercy in Killarney, Melissa, Sorcha and Olwyn Trant from Aghadoe have been involved in church music. They regard it as a privilege and an honour to help enhance the liturgy at a wedding ceremony with their vocalist Colleen Shannon. Last weekend, The Trant Sisters were thrilled to win the Wedding Ceremony Musicians of the Year Award at the Brides of Kerry Wedding Industry Awards at the Ballyroe Heights Hotel. “It’s nice to be acknowledged and it was lovely to meet so many people involved in weddings at the function on Sunday night but what we do is really a labour of love,” Melissa said.

Thousands Hit With Power Cuts Time In Nearly 100 Years As Storm Emma Lands

Thousands of customers were left without electricity Thursday evening as Storm Emma moved in over Ireland, ESB Networks confirmed. Yesterday afternoon, a large electricity fault in Navan affected around 700 customers while 2,100 people were affected

by a fault in Glasmore in Dublin. Kildare, Donegal and Cork were also hit with power cuts. ESB Networks has warned that snow and ice can damage the electricity network by causing electricity wires to hang low or even fall. These wires will still be live and are extremely dangerous. ESB is warning people never to approach or touch electricity network wires under any circumstances. Snow may also cause trees and branches to fall across or lean onto electricity wires. In the event of power outages, crews from ESB Networks are being dispatched to affected areas without electricity supply. However, the network said that heavy snows may impede access to damaged infrastructure and therefore outages may take longer than usual to repair.

Cork newspapers the Irish Examiner and Evening Echo will not be published tomorrow for what could be the first time in 98 years. The Examiner tweeted from its official account that the print edition would not be available on Friday “due to weather conditions and the risk to staff and distributors of doing so”. It added that “digital servic-

es continue as normal with print services resuming as on Saturday”. Irish Examiner sports editor Tony Leen confirmed that the Evening Echo print edition would also be absent tomorrow. The claim that the Examiner hasn’t missed a day since the burning of Cork in 1920 have, however, been refuted by some locals.

Le Pen Could Face Trump Corner Three Years In Prison Trump To Lawmakers: For Isis Tweet You’re Afraid Of The NRA US President Donald Trump has shocked lawmakers on both sides of the aisle by accusing them of being “petrified” of the National Rifle Association (NRA). In a surprise break from the Republican party’s anti-gun control stance, Trump urged lawmakers to come up with a “strong” reform bill. The NRA said that Mr Trump’s remarks “made for great TV” but “would make for bad policy” if implemented. The US gun debate has been reignited by a deadly school shooting in Florida. “I want you to come up with a strong bill - and really strong on background

checks,” Mr Trump told lawmakers at the White House on Wednesday, pushing them to work together on bipartisan legislation. In the meeting, which was broadcast live from the White House, Democrats looked gleeful as Mr Trump suggested expanding background checks for gun buyers and raising the legal age to buy rifles from 18 to 21. The Republican president said the NRA has “great power over you people”, but that the lobby has “less power over me”. Mr Trump said he had previously told NRA officials: “It’s time. We’ve got to stop this nonsense. It’s time.” Breitbart News, a strident backer of the president, criticised him in a bright red headline that said, “TRUMP THE GUN GRABBER”.

Marine Le Pen, the leader of France’s far-right Front National, has been charged over photographs she tweeted in 2015 showing gruesome images of purported atrocities by Islamic State. The move by a judge in Nanterre on Thursday came after the national assembly voted in November to strip Le Pen of her parliamentary immunity tweet. Le Pen, who lost to Emmanuel Macron in last year’s presidential vote, is facing charges of circulating “violent messages that incite terrorism or pornog-

raphy or seriously harm human dignity”, and that can be viewed by a minor. The crime is punishable by up to three years in prison and a fine of €75,000. The pictures were posted a few weeks after the Paris terror attacks in November 2015, in which 130 people were killed. One of the images showed the body of James Foley, an American journalist beheaded by Isis extremists. The others showed a man in an orange jumpsuit being driven over by a tank and another man being burned alive in a cage.

The Beast Arrived…

Words: Cormac Casey Pics: Cormac Casey & Leszek Szeligowski

The much anticipated ‘beast from the east’ gracefully rolled into town last night under the cover of darkness. Thankfully more like a pussycat than a beast, nevertheless much to the delight of hundreds of school kids waking up this morning to this winter wonderland. A snowman in every garden and snowball fights heard through the crisp cold air paints a pretty scene today. Killarney school kids overcoming their disappointment by yesterday’s reports of heavy snowfall everywhere else but Killarney, as they finally get to experience the fun.

The blizzard like conditions however didn’t reach the levels expected. Armed with more than enough warning, most of the country safely ground to a halt yesterday afternoon. However, the panic buying of bread and the shortage thereafter commanded most of the headlines leading up to the shutdown. Tonight, as we do a bread stocktake, the weather will resume normal business and the snow will be behind us. Temperatures will remain low for tomorrow and Sunday but we should remain alert to the changable conditions.

Netflix - Dynasty

Review: Cathal Flaherty – All We Need Cathal Flaherty is fast making a name for himself, not just on a local level but on a national level also. Last December saw the release of the Beaufort native’s stunning debut single A Thousand Miles, which saw him getting playlisted on RTE Radio 1 as well as gaining a fan in Today Fm’s

Fergal D’Arcy. All we need, his second single is out today and reveals a more upbeat, rockier sound with a chorus so infectious you’ll be singing along after the first listen. The single is available to buy on iTunes today and you can also stream it on Apple Music & Spotify.

On The Box

This reboot of Dynasty really is a love letter to the 1980s US soap juggernaut, and If you loved 1980s Dynasty with its mix of weaponised manicures and shoulder pads you could land a plane on, you’ll be into this new version like crude up a pipeline! Original Dynasty creators Esther and Richard Alan Shapiro are exec producers, giving their young successors the seal of approval, and it shows. If it’s possible to bottle what was good and so moreish about the original and sprinkle said essence over the new incarnation, the makers of The OC and Gossip Girl have worked out how.

Where did Mother’s Day come from? The first ever movement for the recognition of motherhood arose from the groups for women whose sons had fought in the American Civil War. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson decreed the second Sunday of May as Mother’s Day. It spread to Europe in the aftermath of the First World War, when many women had lost their sons or husbands, leaving them to raise their children alone. Most countries adopted the US timing and it still remains the most popular date for Mother’s Day across the globe. The origins of the British date are a little more complicated. Some believe Mothering Sunday originally derived from a 16th-century practice of visiting the “mother church” - the main church in the region - on Laetare Sunday, the fourth Sunday of Lent. This was also when domestic servants were given time off to visit their families. In 1920, inspired by the new US holiday, Briton Constance Smith published a booklet entitled The Revival of Mothering Sunday and by 1938, the day “was celebrated in every parish in Britain and in every country of the Empire”, church historian Cordelia Moyse tells the Daily Telegraph. Today, it is more commonly referred to as Mother’s Day, but it is still officially known in the UK as Mothering Sunday.

Mother’s Day traditions It was customary for people to cook their mothers a simnel cake – a type of light fruit cake with two layers of marzipan – on Mothering Sunday because it falls in the middle of Lent and so represents a relaxation of the fasting rules. For this reason, the day was also traditionally called Refreshment Sunday. Simnel cakes, which are also associated with Easter, traditionally feature 11 balls of marzipan icing representing 11 of the 12 disciples (Judas is usually left out, except in extraordinarily forgiving Christian households). Today, gifts of flowers or chocolates are more usual.

7 Tips for a Memorable Mother’s Day Make this year extra-special for the mom in your life. Mothers give us endless time, energy and unconditional love all year. So, this Mother’s Day, May 10, show mom how much she’s appreciated and loved by creating a lasting memory she will cherish.

1. Go to her favorite restaurant and share the love You always hear it’s the thought that counts, so put some thought into selecting her favorite spot. Make a reservation, enjoy a meal out as a family and then make the experience more memorable by taking the time to go around the table and share what you love most about mom while you wait for your food.

2. Give mom a free day Plan an outing with your kids and give mom a day off and the house to herself. Come back at night with dinner in your hands, and you’ll have created a day truly to remember. Mom can have time to do exactly as she wants: go to a yoga class, stay in her PJs and watch a movie, sip a mimosa, read a good book or go get a massage. The best part? After she has a day off to replenish, she can spend the evening with the family she loves so much.

3. Make her homemade gift cards Get your little artists to make mom gift cards with small promises. Let your kids come up with their own ideas. Here are some ideas to get you started: This card is good for help with the laundry. Redeem this card for help in your garden. Hand me this card and I will dry the dishes. Give me this card and I will help clean up a room. Show me this card for a big smile, cuddle and laugh from me.

4. Schedule a photo shoot Go DIY or professional. Select a beautiful park, arboretum or spot in nature and capture the family for a memory that lasts. Pack a picnic lunch and soak up some sun to make the day even more special.

5. Buy jewelry with meaning If you want to go conventional with jewelry, make it sentimental with your child’s birthstone. Celebrate the day your wife became a mom and choose a special ring, necklace, pair of earrings or bracelet adorned with your children’s birthstones.

6. Write letters Handwritten letters are a rarity these days. Have everyone in the family sit down and write a heartfelt letter to mom. Share a favorite memory, what you love best about her or why mom is so special. If you really want to go over the top, have each family member read the letter to mom while she’s enjoying breakfast in bed.

7. Plan an unforgettable experience What has your wife (or mother) always wanted to do but never has? Plan it. Even if it doesn’t happen on Mother’s Day, you will be giving mom double the happiness with the anticipation of the event, and the event itself. Maybe it’s as elaborate as a weekend getaway, adventurous like zip-lining or simple like a family bike ride. And as you plan this special day for the mom of your children, don’t forget about showing your own mom the love, too. Happy Mother’s Day!

A Fabulous Healy-Rae Wedding

Juliette Healy-Rae and Patrick Dennehy tied the knot last Saturday, February 24 in St Patrick’s Church, Kilgarvan. Juliette, daughter of popular Kerry TD Michael Healy-Rae, and Patrick were joined by maid of honour Rosie Healy-Rae and best man Mike Dennehy, along with Bridesmaid Janice Healy and Groomsman Donal Mahony. Their adorable flower girl was Alanna Delaney. Killarney local Grace Foley was on hand with some beautiful church music while Peggy Delaney and John Foley provided the floral arrangements. The wedding party then travelled to Ballygarry House Hotel in Tralee. After dinner the couple and their guests rocked out to Kerry wedding band of the year Truly Diverse before dancing the night away to acclaimed DJ Alan Finn.

It’s that time of the year again. It should definitely be renamed Mother’s Week because we all know moms really do so much for us. The least we can do is spoil them and help them relax and unwind a little. Here are some ideas.

Indian Head Massage Indian head massage is a form of treatment that works on the muscular tissues of the scalp, neck, shoulders, upper back, upper arms and face. These areas hold much of the stress we accumulate in day to day living. Some symptoms are tension in the scalp, neck and shoulders with heaviness, tightness, muscle fatigue, headaches and migraine. Head massage is invigorating, uplifting and revitalising.

Hot Stone Massage Hot stone therapy benefits include improved circulation, stress reduction and relief from pain associated with strained muscles, carpal tunnel syndrome, and muscle spasms. Another common effect is the improvement in the rate of elimination of toxins from the body. With the elimination of waste from the body and

reduction in stress, many clients notice improvements in energy levels after a single hot stone treatment.

Reflexology Reflexology is a natural healing art and is the practice of applying precise hand and finger pressure to specific points on the feet to stimulate the body’s own healing system. These points are believed to correspond to specific organs and structures in the body. Reflexology is a non-invasive, safe and effective treatment. It induces deep relaxation, improved sleep pattern and improved circulation.

Tadhg (Danny O) O’Donoghue (standing to attention as a child in Barraduff Village and more recently out his shop in Barraduff)

Tadhg, known as ‘Tadhg Danny O’ (after his father) was laid to rest this week in Kilquane Cemetery. Tadhg was a familiar face for many years in Killarney when he worked in M.D.O’Sheas. He married Ursula Quirke. They had seven children and ran a shop in Barraduff Village together from 1970 until their son Michael took over the business in 2006. Tadhg was hugely popular and will be sadly missed.

History of the shop in Barraduff can be traced back to 1849. It was founded by a Taddy Galvin who was a music teacher from Knocknagree. He travelled around to all of the villages in Sliabh Luachra teaching music. He married a Murphy girl from Kilquane. They had one daughter and two sons. Their two sons emigrated and their daughter Mary Galvin inherited the shop. Mary Galvin married Taddy O’Donoghue from Upper Barraduff. They had three daughters and two sons. Her eldest son Danny O’Donoghue married Maureen O’Donoghue from Sheens. He took over the shop and he would have been the proprietor during the 1916 Rising and the establishment of the Free State. Danny O’Donoghue was also the local butter agent. Local farmers would bring their butter to the shop and from there Danny would deliver it by horse drawn cart to Carrignaime where it was collected by the Cork butter merchants.

When a person passes away and their estate requires to be dealt with, this is determined as to whether or not the deceased has left a valid Will or not. Where a person has left a valid Will they will have appointed an Executor who will carry out the wishes of the deceased and will gather in the assets and liabilities of the deceased and once taxes and charges have been discharged they distribute the estate of the deceased person as per their wishes under the Will. Where there is no Will the person who deals with the assets of the deceased is referred to as an Administrator and the Administrator carries out the same duties as an Executor under the Will in that they draw in the asset and the liabilities and out of the net proceeds, once taxes and charges have been discharged, they administer / distribute the estate as per the rules of intestacy under the Succession Act, 1965. The first document which must be obtained is the Death Certificate of the deceased and arising from that the person holding themselves out as the Administrator or Executor can then attend to gathering in the assets. There is various information which must be set out in what is referred to as an Inland Revenue Affidavit and this details the assets and liabilities of the deceased and also nominates the details of the party or parties who are beneficiaries under the estate. It is important to ensure that all taxes and charges are discharge as otherwise this will ultimately fall

back on the Executor / Administrator. The Inland Revenue Affidavit, which must be filed with the Revenue Commissioners, sets out the entirety of the assets and liabilities of the deceased and other relevant information and this, along with other documentation is lodged with the Probate Office and arising from which a Grant of Administration or Grant of Probate will thereafter issue. Once the Grant issues in the estate of the deceased, the Executor can then, once all taxes and charges are discharged, distribute the estate as per the wishes of the deceased if there is a Will or otherwise under the rules of intestacy. It is important to note that persons who are beneficiaries under the Will may have a tax liability and they should, as soon as they are aware of the benefit which they are receiving should, as soon as possible, take taxation advice to see if any capital taxes arise. Extracting a Grant of Probate or Administration in the assets of a deceased person can be a complicated matter which your Solicitor will be happy to assist you with. The above is a discussion piece only and does not purport to be legal advice and should not be relied upon as such. In respect of any specific circumstances, you should consult your solicitor to obtain specific legal advice and Terence F. Fight The Cold & Protect Your Garden

February is over yet it feels as if we are going back in time rather than forward! This cold snap can do a lot of harm, particularly to any flower buds on camellias, rhododendrons, azaleas etc. The best thing you can do is cover them with horticultural fleece and hope they survive. If you have any of these plants in pots, make sure they are protected from early morning sun. Morning sun will almost certainly cause frozen flower buds to rot. Also protect tender plants which are coming back to life. Many herbaceous plants such as alstroemerias, hosta, delphiniums and scabious were fooled into growth over the last few weeks, but this cold weather could damage the new growth beyond repair. Cover with straw, or even compost, and they should survive. If you have bought bare rooted hedging but haven’t gotten around to planting it yet, make sure the roots are well covered with compost, straw or fleece - anything to keep the cold at bay. Now is an excellent time to have a look at your garden and plan any new beds, water features or seating areas. With this dry weather it’s easy to take measurements and mark out where your new project will take place. There are a few things to bear in mind when planning new features. First, the practical. Are there water pipes, septic tanks, gas/electricity lines etc. in the way? Secondly, if you are planning a new bed, what is the soil like in that area, or have you better ground elsewhere which can be exploited? I have learned over the years that the best thing to do with an area of bad soil is to cover it with paving! On the other hand, if you are planning a patio, should you excavate the topsoil for use elsewhere? Some fundamental things to think about when planning a new feature in terms of aesthetics are the following: Try to keep your garden unified, as this is most pleasing. Use the same paving slabs and building materials throughout and try to tie them in with the materials used for the house. Soften hard landscaping features with plants, unless you are going for a clean, formal look. Last but not least, please don’t forget to feed the birds! They too were fooled into thinking warmer times were here!

German Court Supports Proposed Diesel City Ban

Millions of diesel-powered vehicles could be banned from major German cities following a landmark ruling by Germany’s top administrative court that permits local governments to ban polluting diesel cars in an effort to improve air quality. Set to affect all diesel vehicles built before the latest Euro 6 emissions standard, the decision has been described

as a historic victory for environmental campaigners who brought the court case, but one that will have a costly fallout for car owners. Currently, cars that meet Euro 4 emissions are set to be banned from Stuttgart next January, while vehicles that meet Euro 5 emissions will not be allowed to enter the city limits from September 2019.

Day three of F1 pre-season testing at Barcelona was effectively written off after a snowstorm descended on the Circuit de Catalunya, further disrupting the teams’ preparations for the new F1 season. After the scheduled start of the ses-

sion - one of just eight days of track time allotted to the teams before the new Formula 1 campaign begins on March 23 - was delayed by three hours, McLaren’s Fernando Alonso set the only timed laps of the day just five minutes before the chequered flag fell.

3-D Printing Parts For Classic Cars

Porsche announced that it is producing parts for its classic vehicles with the help of 3-D printing technology. Using 3-D printers to make car or motorcycle parts isn’t unheard of, but it’s typically been the stuff of hobbyists who come up short while sourcing parts for a restoration or repair, or want to make custom parts for a car. Porsche, however, said its strategy is mainly for extremely rare parts that are

too expensive to produce by traditional methods. In other words, you probably won’t come across one of these 3-D-printed parts unless you’re working on an especially old or rare model. 3-D printing will probably become more common as other auto manufacturers begin to see its benefits. In fact, Mercedes-Benz uses this same technique for vintage truck parts, and Ford is experimenting with using 3-D printing for performance and custom parts.

Bring Back These Italian Classics

Fiat Fiat Chrysler plans to dust off a bit of its past by finding and restoring classic cars from four of the group’s marques. The automaker inaugurated a factory restoration program that will focus on Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Lancia and Abarth classics. But this effort won’t operate as a client service: The FCA Heritage program will

seek out the cars around the world, restore them to factory spec and then offer them for sale. The program already has five cars to demonstrate its work: a 1989 Alfa Romeo SZ, a 1973 Lancia Fulvia Coupe Montecarlo, a 1981 Pininfarina Spidereuropa, a 1959 Lancia Appia Coupe and a 1991 Alfa Romeo Spider.

Preparing Your House For Sale Preparing your home for viewers, or “staging” as it’s called, is important. It will not only ensure your property is sold faster, but can potentially add thousands of euro to its value.

DECLUTTER – BUT DON’T DEPERSONALISE • Get rid of all the excess stuff that has accumulated in every nook and cranny. Put it in storage or give it to a friend • People need to be able to envisage what the property would look like if they were living there. People often find this difficult, so make it easy for them to see all the fantastic living space you’re offering them • Don’t make it look like a generic hotel; leave some personality. Apart from anything else it gives unimaginative buyers suggestions as to what they might do • People are often buying into a lifestyle as much as a property. Show them the attractive side of your lifestyle • Consider removing any bulky furniture that makes the room feel small and replacing it with smaller furniture

A FRESH LICK OF PAINT • Giving your walls a fresh lick of neu-

tral paint will make your home seem lighter and bigger • It will enable the viewers to more easily imagine how they would adapt the rooms to their needs • It will be easier for the buyers to move in and use the rooms immediately than if the walls were still bright purple or lime green • Create a good first impression – give the front door a new coat of brightly coloured paint

FIX AND CLEAN • Make any minor repairs necessary – holes in walls, broken door knobs, cracked tiles, torn or threadbare carpets. Many buyers want to move in without making changes, so allow for this • Clean everything until it sparkles. Get rid of limescale, clean and repair tile grout, wax wooden floors, get rid of all odours, hang up fresh towels. This will make the place more appealing and allow viewers to imagine living there • Tidy up the garden: cut bushes back, clean the patio and furniture of lichen and dirt, and cut the grass. While this doesn’t add much value to your home it makes it more likely to sell as people visualise themselves using the garden

E L A S FOR UPDATE THE KITCHEN • The kitchen is the most valuable room in a house. It is worth the most per square foot and can make the difference when buyers are unsure • Consider refacing your kitchen cabinetry. This is much cheaper than installing new cabinetry and often as effective • Upgrading kitchen counter tops is expensive, but can add serious value • Declutter the surfaces and just leave a bowl of fruit out. Take out any bulky appliances • Consider upgrading the plumbing fixtures and white goods, but keep in mind that while that could make your property sell faster, you will be unlikely to recoup their full value

LIGHT AND AIRY • Wall mirrors make a room look much bigger and lighter. Consider putting some up, especially in smaller rooms or hallways • Clean windows inside and out, and replace any broken light bulbs. Making the place feel light and airy makes rooms feel bigger and the property more attractive

LAHARN, KILLORGLIN, CO. KERRY

• Ensure that you have lamps on in any dark corners

Exceptional quality designer home located a short distance from Killorglin town and just off the Ring of Kerry road. The property extends to three/four spacious bedrooms with excellent views, winter garden room, lounge, sun lounge, kitchen, bathroom and sun room. There is a detached building containing a sauna, garden shed and a further detached store. The house is on 1.5 acres of landscaped gardens.

• Putting a soft lamp in the bathroom can create a warm glow

Viewing of the property is highly recommended.

GUIDE PRICE: €325,000

LIGHT A FIRE • If it’s a cold evening, or even chilly day, light your fire. Consider burning some pinecones for the delicious smell. This will make your home feel warm and inviting. If you don’t have a fire then ensure the fireplace is clean

MAKE IT LOOK PRETTY • Make sure the windows are properly dressed with blinds or curtains as naked windows make a place feel impersonal and run down. Buy some cheap ones (e.g. from Ikea) if necessary • Plants and flowers bring colour, life

and light to a room and also smell wonderful. So does that fruit bowl on your kitchen counter

GET THE RIGHT SMELLS • Bad smells are the single biggest turn off for prospective buyers. Don’t just cover them up, fix the source of the smell. Clear drains, wash bins, open windows, air the kitchen from old cooking smells, get rid of furniture that is embedded with cigarette smoke, and wash any grimy bed sheets • If you are a smoker, place bowls of vinegar around the house and leave out for three days. Though the vinegar will smell when you open the windows it will disappear quickly taking a most of the stale cigarette smell out with it • Conversely, good smells can make a property feel like an alluring home. While it might be impractical to bake fresh bread, cakes or brownies for every viewer that visits your home, you could perhaps brew some fresh coffee

SHOWING THE PROPERTY • You’ll have chosen a good estate agent so let them show the property • It’s their job to know what things to say, what to highlight and what to downplay • They are also effective at answering those tricky questions about the noisy neighbours

OBVIOUS CONVERSIONS • If there are any obvious conversions – adapting the garage into extra rooms, or going up into the loft – and you have some spare cash, why not take advantage of this cash cow rather than letting the new owners make easy money out of improvements. You should usually recoup your money • If you don’t have enough spare cash to make the conversion, consider getting planning permission anyway

13TH ANNIVERSARY

2ND ANNIVERSARY

BARRY

COURTNEY

In loving memory of Michael Barry late of Coolies, Muckross, Killarney, who passed away on 1st March 2005.

In loving memory of our Beloved Mother Mary Courtney, Lissivane West, Milltown, Who died on the 2nd March 2016.

It’s hard without you by my side, The loss I feel is hard to hide, You brought the light into my day, The darkest clouds would fade away, We had much more than words can say, I miss you more and more each day.

Two years have gone, Since we have seen your loving face, Felt your kisses and warm embrace.

Always loved and sadly missed by your wife Catherine. To us you were someone special, So good so kind so true, You will never be forgotten, For we thought the world of you, Life has changed in so many ways, But in our hearts you will always stay. Sadly missed and lovingly remembered by your son Liam and daughter-in-law Helen. Memories are like threads of gold, They never tarnish or grow old, There is a link death cannot sever, Love and remembrance last forever. Lovingly remembered your son Donogh and daughter-in-law Mel. What would i give, to clasp your hand, You happy face to see, To hear your voice, and see your smile, That meant so much to me. Thinking of you today and always Your loving daughter Bríd.

There was magic in Mom’s touch, And sunshine in her smile, There was magic in everything she did, To make our lives worthwhile. We can find both hope and courage, Just by looking in her eyes, Her laughter was a source of joy, Her works were warm and wise. There was kindness and compassion, To be found in her embrace, As we look up, we can see The light of heaven, Shining on Mom’s face. Missed beyond words, Loved beyond measure, Our Mother was truly one of life’s treasures.

BIRTHDAY REMEMBRANCE

We think of you in silence We often speak your names But all we have are memories And your picture in a frame. Your resting place we visit And put flowers there with care But no one knows the heartache As we turn and leave you there.

If we could bring you back again, For one more hour or day, We’d express all our unspoken love, We’d have countless things to say, If we could bring you back again, We’d say we treasured you And that your presence in our lives Meant more than we ever knew,

NOVENA TO THE SACRED HEART Dear Heart of Jesus in the past I have asked for many favours. This time I ask you this special one, (mention favour). Take it dear heart of Jesus and place it within your heart where your Father sees it. Then in his merciful eyes it will become your favour not mine. Amen. Say this prayer three times for three days and your favour will be granted. Never known to fail. Must promise publication of prayer. KC.

O precious tiny sweet little one You will always be to me, So perfect pure and innocent Just as you were meant to be.

Today I will remember you my niece Up above with a heart filled of sadness With a heart of love Taken from us far too soon Our lives are incomplete We live in this world as a grieving family Until the day we meet.

In loving memory of Albert Klausner formerly Salzburg, Austria and Gortroe, Fossa, Killarney who died on February 27th 2014. A wonderful Opa.

In loving memory of my wonderful Papa Albert Klausner formerly of Salzburg, Austria and late of Gortroe, Fossa, Killarney who died in Germany on February 27th 2014.

We dreamed of you and of your life And all that it would be, We waited and longed for you To come and join our family. We never had the chance to play, To laugh to rock to wiggle, We long to hold you, Touch you now and listen to you giggle. I will always be your mother, He’ll always be your Dad, You will always be our child, The child that we had. But now you’re gone... But yet you’re here, We’ll sense you everywhere, You are our sorrow and our joy, There’s love in every tear. Just know our love Goes deep and strong, We’ll forget you, never.

All the dreams we had for you Taken in a blink of an eye My beautiful niece Jenelle Too young to have to die So on this day as always, I’ll light candles and release your balloons and send them to heaven filled with love and a note saying we will see you soon. 4TH ANNIVERSARY KLAUSNER

In loving memory of Albert Klausner formerly Salzburg, Austria and Gortroe, Fossa, Killarney. A wonderful husband, Papa and Opa who died on February 27th 2014. Each day as evening starts to set The ache builds in my chest I know that I must go to bed And try to get some rest. I hug my tear-stained pillow close When no one is around And cry for the one I loved and lost And scream without a sound. Others see me in the day And think I’m doing well But everyday as evening sets I enter my own hell.

He would not leave you stay, Wish you were here with us today. xxx From your Nana Maria and Granda Dermot O’Connor, Uncles Dermot, John Paul and Daniel xxx

Who will I turn to for answers When life does not make sense; Who will be there to hold me close When the pieces just don’t fit.

Love and miss you always.

In loving memory of Albert Klausner formerly Salzburg, Austria and Gortroe, Fossa, Killarney who died on February 27th 2014 in Germany. In loving memory of Jenelle Maria Hickey who died on the 7th March 2006.

Some days I hear your voice And turn to see your face; Yet in my turning, It seems the sound has been erased.

In loving memory of Jenelle Maria Hickey who died on the 7th March 2006. Don’t think of her as gone away, Her journey’s just begun, Life holds so many facets, This earth is only one. Just think of her as resting, From the sorrows and the tears, In a place of warmth and comfort, Through all the days and years. Think how she must be wishing That we could know today, How nothing but our sadness, Can really pass away. And think of her as living, In the hearts of those she touched, For nothing loved is ever lost, And she is loved so much. Love you always and forever Your Uncle Alan, Pia and your cousin Bella.

In loving memory of my wonderful Papa Albert Klausner formerly Salzburg, Austria and Gortroe, Fossa who died on February 27th 2014. I have to admit that I was a Daddy’s girl. He told me he loved better Than anything else in the world. When I became a woman He walked me down the isle, And gave me away With a bittersweet smile. And when I gave birth, He was there, too To greet my little one and say Hello, I love you. And now that man who loved me, And wrapped me in arms so strong Has gone where I can’t reach him, But my love for him lives on. I’ll keep his memory alive, And honor all he believed, And just feel so very grateful For all his love that I received. Loved and missed everyday Bis wir un’s wieder sehen. Your loving daughter Heidi and Son-in-law Ulli.

Time hasn’t healed my pain at all Or quieted my fears So every night, alone in bed I shed those silent tears. Goodbye my love Goodbye My love will never die And when my life is through God will lead me straight to you. Until we meet again. Bis wir un’s wieder sehen Ruhe in Frieden Rest In Peace Love you and miss you always, Your loving wife Maria xxx

JESUS May your Sacred Heart Lord Jesus, be praised, glorified and honoured throughout the whole world now and forever. Repeat this 3 times. R.F

Showdown For The Shield

Scotts Lakers v Paris Texas Kilkenny

Sunday at 3pm & Leisure Centre) (Killarney Sports

A full house is expected at the Auracle on Sunday afternoon as the Scotts Lakers host Kilkenny with the Division 1B Shield up for grabs. It has been a rollercoaster first year back in the big time but a win in their final game would secure a precious piece of silverware for Killarney’s favourite sports team. With the teams neck and neck at the summit, it promises to be a fiercely competitive encounter. The Lakers’ fine run of form came to an abrupt end in the capital last weekend as they lost by five to the Dublin Lions. A poor first quarter showing left them with too much to do and despite Antuan Bootle and Dailian Mason combining for 56 points, they fell to their first defeat in six games. Luckily, their biggest title rivals also came up short on Saturday. Matt St Amour got 39 points for LIT as they triumphed over Kilkenny in Limerick, a result which means the Lakers remain three points clear in first. Kilkenny have a game in hand, however, and they’re very firm favourites to overcome bottom-of-the-table Galway tomorrow evening. The Titans

have only won two games all season. If Kilkenny slip up but then go on to beat the Lakers, the sides will be level and will have to be separated by points difference. Cormac O’Donoghue’s team are currently 32 points better off so only a right hammering on Sunday would knock them off the top. If, as expected, Kilkenny win on Saturday, the clash in Killarney the following day will be a straight, winner-takes-all decider. Division 1B isn’t necessarily where the Lakers want to be operating but victory in the Shield will be a nice touch and give them something to build on for next season. They gave a good account of themselves against some of the teams challenging for the 1A crown earlier on in the campaign so they’re certainly not a million miles away. It’s the club’s first time back in the National League in almost a decade so if you offered them a piece of silverware back in September, I’m sure they would have taken it. A big home performance this weekend and, of course, a victory would be a great way to sign off for the regular season.

Words & Pics: Eamonn Keogh Following a recent run of good form, Scotts Lakers (St Paul’s Killarney) s u f f e r e d their first league defeat since December as they were toppled by Dublin Lions at Coláiste Bríde, Clondalkin, last Saturday night. A disastrous opening quarter where they fell behind by 18 points meant they were always chasing this game. The prospect of clinching the Division 1B title is still very much alive, however - providing that they can bounce back and defeat Kilkenny this weekend. The Killarney side were slightly understrength for this clash with Dan Griffin unavailable along with the continued absence of the injured Justin Tuason and Pádraig Lucey. The opening exchanges were closely contested with the sides level at 7 points each early on. But the Lakers missed several scoring opportunities and gave away far too many turnovers for most of the remainder of this quarter. Dublin Lions, led by Igor Markiewicz and Chris McNairney, dominated to hit a massive 21 points compared to just five points from the Lakers. Antuan Bootle finished out the quarter with a basket and two converted freethrows but the Lions were well in control and led 34–16 at the end of the first quarter. It was a much-improved second quarter from Scotts Lakers as they worked hard to claw back the deficit. They managed to narrow the gap significantly as they outscored the home side by

Defeat In Dublin But Title Still On The Cards 31 points to 19. The Lakers scores came mainly through Antuan Bootle and Dailian Mason, with a basket each from Cian Clernon, Con O’Mahony, Mark Greene and Dylan O’Sullivan. A three-pointer each from Clernon and Mason helped reduce the deficit to six at the half-time break. The Lakers continued their resurgence with a good start to the third quarter. A brace of three-pointers from Mason along with another Bootle basket gave them the lead at one stage and victory appeared well within their grasp. However, the Lakers failed to capitalise. They missed several relatively easy opportunities to score and were turned over far too easily. With Mason sinking four three-pointers in this quarter, they did manage to outscore Lions by a basket but it could have and should have been a lot more. Dublin Lions led 73-69 entering the final quarter and it was still all to play for. Both sides were guilty of squandering scoring opportunities but the Lions utilised the full-court press very well and also cancelled out the threat of the Lakers big men under the boards. They gave away no easy shots. The home side managed to maintain their slight advantage leading 83-81 with 15 seconds remaining and added insurance baskets from the free throw line from Tomas Mikalauskas to secure a five-point win. Scotts Lakers scorers: Antuan Bootle (31), Dailian Mason (25), Dylan O’Sullivan (6), Philip O’Connor (5), Con O’Mahony (4), Andrew Fitzgerald (4), Mark Greene (3) and Cian Clernon (3). Dublin Lions scorers: Muhamed Sabic (29), Igor Markiewicz (16) and Chris McNairney (11).

Home Game Title Decider

While the defeat to Dub lin Lions was a setback, there was positiv e news in other results as Paris Texas Kilk enny also lost to Limerick Celtics. Scotts Lakers remain in the top position of the Division 1B league table with nine wins and 27 points. In second place are Kilkenny with eight wins and 24 points and one game in hand. Kilkenny are fancied to def eat bottom club Titans tonight and will likely go level on points with Scotts Lakers. This mea ns that this Sunday afternoon’s showdown in Killarney Sports & Leisure Centre at 3pm bet ween Scotts Lakers and Paris Texas Kilkenny will decide who wins the Division 1B Shield title. The sides clashed in Kilkenny earlier in the sea son with the Lakers losing 86-72. Kilkenny hav e some quality players in the likes of Taylor You ng, Brian Hogan, Julian O’Keeffe, James But ler and Lukasz Szulc and Scotts Lakers will nee d a huge improvement on their overall team performance from last weekend. It is the last home game of the season for Scotts Lakers and Killarne y basketball fans are urged to come out in force to support the team. It has been a remarka ble season overall for Scotts Lakers with the return to National League action after an abs ence of nearly a decade. The huge crowds sup porting the team all season are bigger than any attendances at any other Division 1 venue, and even bigger than the majority of Super Lea gue venues. With a Shield title up for grabs, the Killarney supporters can make a difference again this Sunday.

SmallTalk

Scotts Lakers big man Antuan Bootle talks to Adam Moynihan about his teammates, playing against DeMarcus Cousins and adjusting to life in Killarney The Lakers have a title decider against Kilkenny on Sunday. How would you rate the team’s chances? I think our chances are really high. Ever since the second half of the season started we’ve been playing our best basketball and we’ve been more cohesive as a team. How do you feel you’ve been playing yourself? Since the cup semi-final against Ballincollig I’ve been a lot more focussed. I think my numbers have shown that I’m playing my best basketball of the season right now. What do you think of the Irish league? Has anything surprised you? It’s different. This is my first time playing in Europe. I’ve played in South American leagues before here. The only thing that really took me by surprise was some of the rules, like the team having to wear matching socks. Things I’ve never heard of before. How have you settled into life in Killarney? How does it compare to the Bahamas and Texas? Killarney is great. The people here are really good and it’s a beautiful place. I keep hearing that I kinda lucked out by getting placed in Killarney. The town has been great to me so far. I’m comfortable and I can’t really complain… The only thing is the Irish weather. That’s something that I really need to get used to because compared to Texas and the Bahamas obviously, it’s night and day. A few questions about your teammates… Who would you least like to get stuck in a lift with? I can’t say there are any of my teammates that I wouldn’t want to be around for extended periods of time. Most of the boys would say Shane Horgan. [laughs] Shane has a lot to say but we got along famously. Who’s the best at Tinder? I don’t even know who has Tinder! At the beginning of the season the guys made a lot of jokes about Tinder, saying that I should get on it to meet people but I’m not a Tinder guy. Who’s the biggest moaner? One person who doesn’t like it if they don’t get their fouls called is Con O’Mahony. Who’s the worst dressed? It’s probably me, man. I’m always in sweatpants and stuff. I never really dress to impress. I’m always either going to the gym or I’m going home. Best dressed by far is Mark Greene. Really? Yeah, I want to be like him when I grow up. Who spends the most time in the gym? Oh that’s me. 100%? 100%. Every single day, multiple times a day. I’m not giving it to anybody but myself. Second to me I think is Dailian Mason. We spend a lot of time in there together. Who’s the best player you’ve ever played with? [thinks long and hard…] Kevin Love (Cleveland Cavaliers,

five-time NBA All-Star). We played in a couple tournaments one summer in high school. It was back when he was much bigger but still a very skilled big man. I’m surprised it took you so long to think of that! Honestly I’ve played so much basketball with so many great people but Kevin Love, even at a young age like that, was really fundamentally sound. Who’s the best athlete you’ve ever played with? In college I had a teammate, his name was Preston Brown. Could jump out the gym. Who was your toughest ever opponent? DeMarcus Cousins (New Orleans Pelicans). What’s your proudest sporting moment? My sophomore year in college, we won our conference and went to the NCAA tournament. That was really exciting. And the most embarrassing? Probably being blocked 10+ times by DeMarcus Cousins. He made me feel small. If you had to compare yourself to an NBA player, who would it be? I admire Carmelo Anthony but, realistically, probably Draymond Green. If you could go for a drink with any three people, living or dead, who would they be? Although you don’t drink, do you? No I don’t drink but we can have a water or something! Kobe Bryant for sure. I’m a big fan. Idolise him. Just his work ethic and his mindset. LeBron James, just to pick his brain. And if I was to go outside of sports, I would have to say Will Smith. He’s a real motivational and inspirational person. What are your five favourite sports in order? 1) Basketball, 2) track and field, 3) American football, 4) swimming and 5) soccer. Have you seen any Irish sports? I enjoy watching Gaelic football and hurling as well. The thing I like so much about football is that you have traces of so many different sports. It’s like five different sports combined into one. Is there another sport you haven’t tried that you think you’d be good at? I never played organised American football. They tried to get me

Antuan Bootle

to play ever since I moved from the Bahamas because of my size. I think I would have excelled at it. What’s the best sporting moment of all time? Kobe Bryant’s last game of his career. I can watch that to this day and I still get excited. Scoring 60 points… Who does that?! What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? If you want your life to change, you have to change yourself. Do you have any nicknames? Yeah. My family call me Tuan. Another childhood nickname that I still go by is Big Show. I was a really hefty kid and one of my P.E. teachers just started calling me Big Show and it stuck. And some people call me Lion. You know, the dreads and the facial hair and everything. Those are the main ones. Is there an app on your phone you couldn’t live without? Pinterest. I love cooking my own meals and finding out new recipes. So I’ll go on there to get new ideas. What’s your most-used emoji?

What sort of music do you listen to? I do rap, RnB, classical music… I love reggae music. I listen to a lot of Tarrus Riley. What would you sing at karaoke? I’ve been to karaoke one time. I had no desire to do it but I went out one night with this girl and she wanted to do it. I told her, “Go ahead!” She was up there and she was so nervous, she was bombing. I was like, “You know what would really get me some good points…?” So I went up there and grabbed the mic and it went well. But that’s the only time I’ve ever done karaoke. Who’s the most famous person in your phone? One of my childhood friends from the Bahamas, she’s actually Miss Universe, Bahamas. Her name is Tomii Culmer. Who would play you in a movie about your life? Michael B Jordan. He’s a very versatile when it comes to roles. He could pretend to be 6’8”. There you go. He could act the height and everything. Thanks Antuan. All the best for Sunday. No problem. Thank you.

“All We Can Do Is Keep Winning & Hope For The Best” Premier A

Fenit Samphires 34 Killarney Athlet ic (Samphire Park)

They’re top of the league but the reigning champions’ fate is out of their hands, writes Athletic’s Adam Moynihan We picked up another good result on Sunday and we’re still alive, that’s about the size of it. Things are out of our hands really at this stage but if we win our remaining four games, we’ll give ourselves a chance. We’re three points clear at the top but Dingle and Celtic both have four games in hand, which is a bit mad when you think about it. I know Celtic have been involved in the FAI and the Munster Junior but there’s no real reason for them to have only played half of their league games by March. It seems to happen every year so it must be a bit of a tactic on their part. I suppose the advantage is that if their rivals have all their games played, Celtic know exactly what they need to do. There’s also the increased likelihood that as the season reaches its climax, their opponents will have nothing to play for. I’m not complaining really. It shouldn’t make a difference to us - we still need to go out and win our games regardless. It’s just an observation! We did well against Fenit in very difficult conditions. It was actually a nice day by the seaside but it was typically blustery, and their pitch slants downhill from sideline to sideline at around a 45° angle. The wind was going diagonally down the hill as well. It was gas enough. For any pass over 10 yards you’d nearly want a caddy. We have a new Sierra Leonean signing called James Kailedzi and it was his first experience of Kerry soccer. I’d say he got some land. Fenit have some quality players and are well able to play ball. They knocked us out of Munster so we knew it was going to be very tough, but our attitude was good and we went in 4-1 up at half time. Will Courtney got a couple (the second was a beaut), Lynch got one and goal machine Cillian O’Regan got his second in two games. The second half was always going to be a battle but we kept them at bay up until the 80th minute. Michael O’Gara got one and

when Peter McCarthy stepped up to absolutely leather a free kick into the top corner, things got a bit hectic. We managed to see it out and in the end it was one of the more satisfying results we got this season. As I said, all we can do is keep winning and hope for the best. In our remaining fixtures we have Celtic away and Dingle, Dynamos and Listowel at home. Any slip up and our title defence is over but we’re still confident that we can beat anyone on our day. Elsewhere, Celtic and Dingle’s match was called off following the tragic passing of Pobalscoil Chorcha Dhuibhne student Aodhán ó Conchúir. As well as being a talented footballer, Aodhán also played soccer for Camp Juniors and had recently been selected to play for the Kerry U-15s. It’s unbelievably sad news and your heart goes out to his family, friends and teammates. At senior level, Kerry are in Oscar Traynor action this weekend so there are no fixtures for the teams at the top of the Premier. Mastergeeha have a crucial relegation clash with Tralee Dynamos on Sunday. The sides are currently level so a win would send them three points clear of the drop zone. They also have two games in hand. Dynamos got a big win against Listowel in their last outing and the last thing Geeha need at this stage is for the Tralee club to be gathering any kind of momentum.

Around The World

Relegation in 2016. Villa fans protest against then owner Randy Lerner. Left: Corkman Conor Hourihane.

Words: Adam Moynihan

“It Has Been A Rough Couple Of Decades To Be A Villa Fan” I’ve been a Villa fan for the entirety of the Premier League era. Paul McGrath was my favourite Irish player when I was a child and when club football was explained to me, and I found out that my hero played for Aston Villa, it seemed like a good idea to make them my team. It’s been a rough couple of decades. Ron Atkinson’s side challenged for the title in the inaugural Premier League season, John Gregory led his team to first (at Christmas) in 1998/99 and Martin O’Neill had Villa challenging for a Champions League spot for a few seasons in a row from 2008-2010. Apart from that, supporting Birmingham’s biggest club has been consistently depressing. Things reached a new low under the likes of Alex McLeish, Gerard Houllier, Paul Lambert, Tim Sherwood and Remi Garde (what an uninspiring list) as Villa went from harmless also-rans to one of the worst teams in

the history of the league. The Randy Lerner era, which had started with such promise, had turned sour and relegation became a foregone conclusion. When it actually happened in 2016, it was kind of a relief. “We might actually win a game in the Championship,” was the general feeling. But the first year in the second tier was far from plain sailing. Roberto Di Matteo showed no signs of leading Villa to promotion. In fact, for a while it looked like relegation to League 1 was a real possibility. He was sacked after 12 games and Steve Bruce took the reins. A year and a bit later and Villa are challenging for promotion having won eight of their last 11 games. Thanks in part to some excellent displays from Irishmen Conor Hourihane, Scott Hogan and Jack Grealish Glenn Whelan (Grealish has been playing well to be fair), they’re currently just outside the

Legion Girls Honoured At Awards Night The Killarney Legion U-12 and U-16 girls teams were honoured recently at the club’s Juvenile Girls Awards Night. The U-12s won both the East Kerry and County League and as the season went on they certainly went from strength to strength as

the hard work on the training pitch paid off. The U-16s also did the East Kerry and County double in what was a busy year for the team. automatic promotion spots. With all of the false dawns and heartache of the past 36 years (Villa won the European Cup in 1982, in case I haven’t mentioned it to you in person), you might think that at this stage the Claret and Blue Army would be wary about counting their chickens before they’ve hatched. Incredibly, for some dedicated supporters, the opposite seems to be true. In light of the team’s recent run of form, early bird season ticket sales have soared with thousands of Villa fans apparently anticipating Premier League football in the 2018/19 season. Considering the club’s history, this kind of optimism is truly remarkable. In fact, it’s completely ridiculous if you look at things rationally. Although in fairness, if we were good at looking at things rationally we probably wouldn’t be supporting Aston Villa in the first place.

“Aodhán’s Death Drives Home How Serious Head Injuries Can Be” The footballing community and the county in general are still in shock following the untimely passing of talented Pobalscoil Chorcha Dhuibhne student Aodhán ó Conchúir. The 14-year-old was inolved in an accidental clash of heads with a teammate during last week’s Russell Cup final against St Brendan’s College. Having complained of a headache, the youngster was taken to hospital. Three days later he was dead. I can’t imagine how difficult a time this is for his family, friends and teammates. It must also be extremely tough for the Sem players who were playing on the day. Witnessing any serious injury can be traumatic, let alone something as tragic as this, but I’m sure that their parents, schoolmates and teachers will provide the support they need at this emotional time. The death of a child is always deeply upsetting and from the perspective of someone who has aways been involved in sports, the idea of a young lad

dying from an injury received while playing football is somehow even more jarring. As well as just the sheer heartbreak of it, it’s hard not to think “that could have been my friend” or “that could have been me.” It’s scary. We were driving back to Fenit on Sunday morning for a soccer game and Aodhán’s passing popped into my head. I thought about mentioning it to the boys but, in the end, I didn’t. It’s not something that you even want to contemplate, certainly not before you go out on the field. From a player’s point of view, it also drives home how serious head injuries can be. Even with all the recent debate and procedural changes across a number of professional sports, I still think we’re too complacent at amateur level when it comes to the issue of concussion. In Aodhán’s case, he received immediate medical attention and unfortunately his injury still proved to be fatal. But how often have we seen guys sustain heavy blows to the head and do nothing about it? I’ve been guilty of it myself. Last year we were

Tributes The Killarney Advertiser would like to acknowledge all of the heartfelt condolences offered to Aodhán’s family and friends from literally every club and society in the area. Due to the sheer volume of tributes we were unable to print all of them but it’s great to see the local sporting community sticking together at such a difficult time.

training with Athletic in the Sem hall and I slipped and cracked the side of my head off the floor. The lads helped me to my feet. I hadn’t a clue what had happened. I tried to play it down, probably out of embarrassment more than anything. “I’m grand.” I wasn’t. Although I didn’t realise it fully at the time, I was concussed. After training, it was my job to collect €2 from everyone to pay for the hall. I remember staring at the money in my hands. I couldn’t count it. Still, I assured everyone I was fine. It took a couple of hours to properly come back to earth. It’s a bit like being drunk: you don’t realise how bad you were ‘til you sober up. I felt a bit off for a couple of days but I said nothing. To be honest, I was worried that if I got diagnosed with concussion, I wouldn’t be allowed to play against Celtic that weekend and I might lose my place in the team. That kind of disregard for my own well-being might seem shocking from the outside but things like that happen all the time at every level of sport. As it turned out, I was lucky. I got through that match unscathed and there were no lasting effects (as far as I can tell). Aodhán’s passing is a terrifying reminder of how devastating a head injury can be. The next time I get a bang I won’t make the same mistake again.

The NatWest 6 Nations returned in earnest last weekend and some mouth-watering matches took place in round three, with a major shock on the cards. First up France took on Italy at the Orange Velodrome in Marseille. As expected, the home side were far too strong for Conor O’Shea’s men and won by double scores (34–17). Then, on Saturday, the real action took place with Ireland up first. They hosted Warren Gatland’s Wales at a

John Paul Doyle, Anthony Jones, Breeda Healy and Siobhán Mooney at a Special Olympics event on Saturday.

Grand Slam Still On For Impressive Ireland packed Aviva Stadium. With the returning Lions in their ranks and the injuries that Ireland suffered - losing Henderson, Henshaw and Furlong – the visitors were favourites. However, Joe Schmidt’s men had different ideas. Jacob Stockdale was first to cross the whitewash after six minutes before Davies crossed for the visitors halfway through the first half. Bundee Aki crossed for a try just before halftime. In a pulsating second half, Leavy and Healy scored tries to make it 27

points to 13. Just as the game looked finished, Wales scored through Shingler - his first test try. Conor Murray stepped up to take a penalty on the 75th minute following wayward kicks from Sexton but Wales scored to bring it to within three points which made for a nervous last minute. A wayward pass, however, saw Jacob Stockdale score a try in the 82nd minute and that was it. Ireland have now won three from three. The shock of the weekend was watch-

ing England lose to Scotland to blow the 6 Nations wide open. Next up Ireland face Scotland at the Aviva in two weeks and if they win, history beckons! Kerry’s own Ciara Griffin led the Irish ladies to victory against Wales at Donnybrook on Sunday. Our Killarney RFC girls travelled en masse to the game and even made a fabulous banner for the day, making it onto the news and the telly. Well done to everyone involved!
