Killarney hospitals to lose 42 beds

| By Sean Moriarty The projected completion date of December 2021 for the new community hospital cannot come soon enough for the 78 residents of Killarney Community Hospital.

The two HSE operated care facilities in Killarney are set to lose a total of 42 beds as a result of COVID-19 restrictions, documents seen by the Killarney Advertiser can reveal. | By Sean Moriarty The news comes less than one week after the HSE promised an increase in bed numbers across the country in preparation for a potential second wave of the Coronavirus and increased demand over the winter months. It's understood that St Columbanus Community Nursing Home will lose 27 beds while Killarney Community Hospital (known locally as The District Hospital) will suffer a 15-bed reduction. The reason given for the bed losses is to allow safe social distancing within the hospitals and the Killarney Advertiser understands that no more than four beds will be permitted in each ward. Documents seen by this newspaper reveal that the measures could be in place for at least 18 months. The document does not reveal the levels of cutbacks at any specific hospital including the two Killarney-based facilities. While the moves won't affect current residents, new admissions to long term care at the local hospital will not be accepted. “While I understand that you would like detailed information on the impact on your local community hospital or community nursing unit, we cannot say at this point exactly how many beds will be temporarily removed," a HSE statement said. "We are currently engaging with staff,

unions and employee representative bodies. The Directors of Nursing in each facility are currently involved in a process of reviewing safe occupancy. What I can say is that for about 18 months there will be a temporarily reduced level of public residential service available to some local communities. However, work will be underway to restore the overall number of beds in purpose-built and compliant centres as quickly as possible." It is understood that capacity at the St Columbanus Community Nursing Home will be reduced from 92 to 65 beds while the Community Hospital will have a total of 23 beds, down from its previous 38 beds.

Local TD Danny Healy-Rae raised the matter in the Dáil on Tuesday. “I am horrified at the closure of 27 beds in the home in Killarney and 15 beds in the Killarney Community Hospital,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “Recently the Minister and HSE said they were opening up more beds throughout the country to cater for patients with the Coronavirus, while beds are actually being closed in Killarney where there is a huge need for these beds to be available. What should be happening now is that all the beds and wards which have been closed for years need to be opened up and used.”

A Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) report, published this week, reveals many shortcomings at the facility including that the current premises "remains unfit for its intended purpose". Of the 12 standards that were examined by HIQA inspectors the hospital was found to be non-compliant in all but one. “Residents continue to be accommodated in situations which adversely impact their daily quality of life, privacy and dignity”, the report stated. Examples of non-compliance included that the Hawthorn and Heather wards did not have adequate outdoor space. The majority of the 78 residents were sitting beside their bed, or lying in bed at 3pm on the day of inspection. The inspectors reported that residents received all of their meals beside their beds and not in a dedicated dining area. However, HIQA also noted that "It was evident that the person in charge and her team were committed to the delivery of quality care to residents, and had invested time and resources in a comprehensive contingency plan for COVID-19". "Overall, the findings on this inspection were that the management team had demonstrated good leadership, and a commitment to on-going quality improvement" HIQA said.

Oisin Murphy vows to clear name in drug allegation | By Sean Moriarty Killarney jockey Oisin Murphy has vowed to clear his name after a positive drugs test at a race in France in July. France Gallop claim that he tested positive for metabolites of cocaine following a routine urine test at a race meeting in

Chantilly. On August 19 the Killarney man was informed by France Gallop that the test was positive. A few days after he was informed of the test result by Gallop France he organised an independent test which showed up negative. He has shared this information with Gallop France and is awaiting their

analysis. “I have never taken cocaine in my life and will fight to clear my name,” he said. “I want to thank those who are supporting me and in the meantime I want to keep riding winners and focus on my career. I will have no further comment to make and wish to respect the processes of Gallop France.”

Time to revive the Safe Cross Code

EXCLUSIVE

| By Sean Moriarty A legendary road safety television advert from the 1970s could be revived if a plan by Killarney Municipal District members gets national support.

CHARITY CUT: Sisters Nicole and Katelyn Williams, pictured with their aunt Siobhan Reen (Jack & Jill Liaison Nurse Kerry), plan to cut their hair for the Rapunzel Foundation while raising funds for Jack & Jill. Photo: Michelle Crean

Double chop for Kilcummin sisters It's not a case of 'Sisters Are Doin' It for Themselves' as the '80s song goes - but rather sisters helping sick children as two Kilcummin girls are planning to get the chop for two charities. | By Michelle Crean Sisters Nicole (18) and 11-year-old Katelyn Williams were inspired by their aunt Siobhan Reen, a Jack & Jill Liaison Nurse for the Kerry area, after hearing that the Jack & Jill Foundation is suffering from substantial funding losses this year. The girls, granddaughters of wellknown local motor dealer John Reen in Rathmore, put a plan of action together and decided not only to chop their long locks for one charity but to help a second by donating the hair afterwards to the Rapunzel Foundation, a charity that makes wigs for sick children. On Monday they set up a GoFundMe page and have so far raised over €800. They plan to raise €100 for every inch cut. When they hit their target they will then book a hairdresser

for the much anticipated cuts! The €3,200 raised will provide 200 hours of nursing care for children supported by the Jack & Jill, a nationwide charity which provides in home nursing support for children with significant neurological deficits and provides end of life care to all children up to the age of five, Siobhan explained. "I'm very proud of the two girls," Siobhan told the Killarney Advertiser. "It means so much to the families. Funding is down €200,000 for Jack & Jill this year. That's a huge deficit that needs to be made up as there's no big company fundraising events. It's the individuals and communities that are helping us out. Every €16 is an hour of in home nursing care which helps to give parents a much needed break." To make a donation go to GoFundMe: Inches for Hours.

The Safe Cross Code, a catchy road safety advert and sung by legend Brendan Grace encouraged children and adults alike to engage in safe practices while crossing busy streets. The ‘Safe Cross Code’ song was used extensively in a campaign fronted by 'Judge', the star of the 1970s childrens' television show ‘Wanderly Wagon’. A generation of school children grew up on words and messages of the advert and locally elected councillors are calling for it to be revived. Cllr Donal Grady raised a motion at Wednesday’s special meeting between elected members and executive staff. Grady said he was concerned that pedestrians in Killarney did not understand rules of the road at uncontrolled crossings where people step out into passing traffic. At such crossings it is at a driver’s discretion to stop but Grady called for KMD to put up notices at the crossings “informing the public that they do not have the right to just walk across”. Grady’s motion led a lively debate on the legendary advert with Cllr Niall ‘Botty’ O’Callaghan threatening to sing the words of the song until he was po-

litely advised by colleagues that they did not need to hear him sing! “It is time to revive it, it is very relevant today,” Cllr O’Callaghan added and asked for the Council to write to the Road Safety Authority (RSA). Killarney Municipal District Engineer John Ahern agreed with the elected members. “This is a national issue but Killarney could take the lead,” he told the meeting. The RSA did re-release the song with the help of Brendan Grace and Gay Byrne a few years ago before both men passed away, but KMD staff believe it is time to do it again.

Town survey shows support for pedestrianisation | By Sean Moriarty A survey of residents and businesses in Killarney has revealed that a significant number of respondents are in favour of making Plunkett Street and Main Street pedestrian only zones. Of the 1,332 responses received via an online survey initiated by Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce, 629 – or 47 percent – expressed a preference for the pedestrianisation of both streets. 15 percent were in favour of pedestrianising Plunkett Street only, and eight percent would prefer to see a no traffic zone on Main Street only. A total of 26 percent of those that responded wanted neither Main Street or Plunkett Street pedestrianised. The ‘Let’s Talk About Town' survey en-

gaged with people living and working in Killarney to get a snapshot of what is important to them, what they need and expect from the business community, and measures they would like to see implemented. “This was a great opportunity to get feedback from the public on what they see as important factors in creating a safe and vibrant new Killarney,” Paul Sherry, President of the Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce, said. “We all need to rebuild together and this survey will serve as a starting point in changing the ways we do business and how to better satisfy the needs of our customers, locals and visitors.” See next week’s Killarney Advertiser for a full breakdown on the survey results and local business and political reaction.

EXPANSION: Building works have resumed at The Mon on New Road which will include a Special Needs Unit and new school hall. Pictured are Principal Colm O Súilleabháin and Deputy Principal Mary Brosnan. Photo: Michelle Crean

€600,000 extension progressing at The Mon

A brand new €600,000 extension is well underway at one local school and is set to give staff and pupils even bigger and better facilities. | By Michelle Crean The works, which will include a Special Needs Unit with a sensory room, an ASP classroom, and a new hall in The Mon on New Road, began just before lockdown but works were delayed due to the sudden school closures earlier this year. Now it's hoped that it will be ready for an official opening in the New Year. With 190 pupils from second to sixth class, school principal Colm O Súilleabháin says they are all looking forward to moving into the new building. "We have two special classes, one which caters for pupils with two or more diagnosed with learning difficulties, and the second is an ASP class for children on the spectrum," he told the Killarney Advertiser. "The unit will combine both classes and the multi sensory room. We're also building a new general practice hall as the one we had was not fit for purpose. The old hall you couldn't fit everybody in at one time and Christmas concerts were tight for space. The new hall will be double the size of the one we had and

will be fantastic." He said it was disappointing to see the project delayed due to the COVID closure in mid-March but he was delighted to see the workers back on site before school resumed. "The work started the week before the lockdown so it was tools down for a while but it's great to see the work progressing. We're looking forward to the New Year when it's complete." And the work won't be stopping there as school staff are planning to set up a GoFundMe page to raise funds to create a fun and colourful space outside for the pupils. Although still in the planning phase, Deputy Principal Mary Brosnan said they will be posting a fundraising page online in the coming weeks. "We will be setting up a GoFundMe page asking people for a minimum of €5. We also want to set up an Instagram page for the unit. We're hoping to raise approximately €30,000 to help fund a child friendly soft play area and make the outside nice and colourful."

Photography can be an lonely hobby - especially with the current COVID restrictions in place - but one local group are calling for new members to join them online. As their new season begins, Killarney Camera Club are planning to meet up via Zoom and are hoping a few new faces will join them. In September 2001 a group of photography enthusiasts formed Killarney Photographic Society and it was later renamed Killarney Camera Club in 2006. Their aims are to promote and organise photographic activities for members, to provide a forum for members to pursue their photographic interests, and to co-operate with other organisations in the promotion and organisation of photographic activities. "Our members come from a wide range of backgrounds but we all share a common hobby; the love and pursuit of photography," John Keane, PRO of Killarney

Free parking on Rock Road to continue | By Sean Moriarty The free parking scheme at Rock Road is to be extended for the duration of the Safe Streets programme. Killarney Municipal District (KMD)

introduced free parking on Thursday and Fridays at the new car park near the Mercy Covent in July. It was a concession granted as a result of 50 car parking spaces being lost to the town centre when footpaths were widened as part of the Safe Streets project which was brought in to allow

Camera Club, told the Killarney Advertiser. "Some of us have years of experience while more among us are beginners. Whichever category we belong to we continue to learn more about photography through sharing our knowledge and experience with our fellow members and through the activities in which we participate," he said. "This year we face the same difficulties as every other organisation and club with COVID restrictions. We have already started with our first Zoom meeting and hope to continue with outings and presentations from a pool of nationwide photographers. We welcome new members no matter what your photographic experience is. It’s also a great way to meet people on our outings. We have reduced our membership prices this year to €40 for waged and €20 for pensioners, students and unwaged as we will have less expenses." Anyone interested can contact the club by emailing secretary@killarneycameraclub.ie.

businesses reopen following pandemic related restrictions. Originally set to run until early September, the Council extended Safe Streets until January in light of evidence that Coronavirus is still prevalent in society and in anticipation of a predicted boom in Christmas shopping.

On Wednesday Mayor Brendan Cronin asked a special meeting between KMD elected members and officials if the programme “could be extended for the foreseeable future”. Killarney Municipal District Manager Angela McAllen confirmed to the meeting that free parking at Rock Road would “tie in with the current lifeline of the Safe Streets plan”.

Al fresco dining takes a step forward | By Sean Moriarty

EXCLUSIVE

Plans to introduce al fresco dining to Killarney have taken a step forward as it's to be considered under the Urban Regeneration plan.

FAREWELL: After 38 years service Irene O'Keeffe retired from Coolick National School yesterday (Thursday).

Irene bids farewell after 38 years service

Emotions were high in one Kilcummin school yesterday (Thursday) as children and staff said farewell to their school principal after 38 years dedicated service. | By Michelle Crean Irene O'Keeffe, who has taught in Coolick National School for 38 years - 23 of those as principal - has even deeper connections to the parish educational facility as she herself attended as a child, and even watched her children blossom there over the years. Yesterday, staff, pupils, members of the Board of Management and the Parents Association, gathered outside for a special ceremony, where they made presentations as a thank you. "Irene is a past pupil of the school where many generations of her own family have attended, including her own children, John, Daniel and Anne," Deputy Principal Tara O'Donoghue told the Killarney Advertiser. "Irene’s pride in the school was nurtured at a very young age and she has passed this sense of pride onto both staff and pupils over the years. Irene made everyone welcome in Coolick school. She embraced the staff as if they were members of her own family and she loved the children as her own. She believes that “you give children roots so they can grow wings” and she modelled Coolick school accordingly. She lived out the saying “Mol an óige agus tiocfaidh sí”." The belief that the school is an extension of the home is core to Irene's philosophy and she embodied this in all her daily in-

teractions. She had an excellent rapport with parents over the years. During her time in Coolick Irene saw many changes in education and she did her very best to embrace every new change and implement it for the benefit of the children. During her principalship a large extension was built onto the school, and with huge parental involvement an Astro pitch was added in 2014 along with an Aistear playground which promotes learning through play. Irene added that she had the great privilege of working and living in the community she grew up in. "I have been blessed with great co-workers whom I refer to as my school family and also with a strong school community. There is an underswell of good will and volunteering of time here that goes unseen. Using a modern analogy in this unprecedented time, I have worked in the idyllic “pod” within the parish "bubble” all of my teaching life. I have been so lucky to see our school and its community become one and the same. The privilege of being the custodian of this lovely school since 1999 has been my reward." Irene is now looking forward to spending quality time with her family; travelling with her husband Dinny post-COVID, and having time to indulge in her hobbies which includes hillwalking and gardening.

Last week the Killarney Advertiser exclusively revealed that Cllr Michael Gleeson had called on the Council to place outdoor umbrellas or street coverings in the town centre. It is the second time he has put forward such an idea after being inspired while visiting a family member in Belgium where outdoor dining is common practice all year round. After witnessing locals and visitors enjoying outdoor dining in Killarney town centre over the summer months – a direct result of indoor crowd gathering

rules imposed by COVID-19 restrictions – Gleeson believes it is time to revisit the project. At Wednesday’s special meeting of Killarney Municipal District he recalled a visit to a German factory that manufactures such outdoor coverings which was undertaken around eight years ago – the same time he first mooted the project. “Killarney could become the al fresco dining capital of Ireland,” he told the meeting. “These outdoor furnishings would be Council owned and maintained and could be placed so as not to favour one business over any other.” Kerry County Council said it has applied for funding under the Urban Regeneration Development Fund for upgrading of the town centre and that Gleeson’s proposal will be considered as part of this plan.

Property tax reduced despite council funding shortfall | By Sean Moriarty Kerry householders will pay less property tax year than they did in 2020. The majority of Kerry County Councillors elected to the Killarney Municipal area have voted in favour to increase the base rate of local property tax by 7.5 percent next year. This is a 2.5 percent reduction off the 10 percent base rate increase they voted for last year. A special meeting of Kerry County Council took place at John Mitchels GAA Complex on Monday morning to allow all councillors to vote and decide on the rate. Kerry County Council Chief Executive Moira Murrell asked councillors to retain last year’s rate, which was an increase of 10 percent of the base rate. Kerry County Council is projecting an

income drop of €10.6 million next year as a result of the pandemic. It is understood that if the property tax remained at the base rate of zero vital services like house maintenance and street sweeping would be affected as a result of the shortfall. The 7.5 percent base-rate increase was a compromise to protect vital services but without burdening householders. Elected councillors are allowed vote for an increase or decrease of up to 15 percent each year. NEWS IN CONVERSATION 14

2.10.2020

Passersby have stopped in their tracks in the heart of Killarney town in recent weeks as one very talented busker has been playing melodic, uplifting and refreshing songs on his acoustic guitar. This week Michelle Crean talks to the man behind the strings, 40-year-old Gareth Carey, who is planning to make Killarney his new home.

Sweet acoustic sound surprises locals And, during our ‘In Conversation’ he revealed that he has had a huge music career touring with Jeff Martin's 'Armada' in Australia, supporting acts like Public Enemy, Gomez, The Wailers and meeting to discuss some songs with none other than The Temptations at the Royal Albert Hall. He also toured Australia extensively and played for the Swing Dance Champion of the East Coast of America. Gareth grew up in Malvern, England before moving to Clonakilty, Ireland aged 12 in 1992 and began to learn the guitar. When he was 16 he studied under the tutelage of Kevyn Gammond who played guitar with The Band of Joy with Robert Plant (Led Zeppelin) on vocals and then collaborated on many albums and live shows Robert Plant went on to record and perform in his solo career. Gareth also attended Kidderminster College where he studied Music Management and Sound. In the years that followed Gareth has been session playing with emerging

bands from the Irish and English music scene. His music influences include Nick Drake, Roy Harper, John Martyn and Bob Dylan and although he’s looking to get signed as a solo artist, he says that the music industry is going through a tough decade. “Obviously it’s been a tough year with the year that’s in it,” he explained to the Killarney Advertiser. He says that he supported Mick Flannery seven or eight years ago and recorded his first album with ’70s and ‘80s folk legend Roy Harper who has over 50 albums under his belt. Since then he’s been session playing but work is becoming increasingly hard to come by especially this year due to the pandemic and restrictions on gigs. “The last 10 years has been the toughest for the music industry as it’s all free online now. It makes it more difficult to make a living from music now. I want to bring music back, I think it’s been lost a bit. It’s like art suddenly has no work. There’s no

way around it.” Not only has the last decade set him on harder times, the talented guitarist also recently smashed both his ankles in an accident, which has set him back even further. “I smashed both ankles in Mercier in Spain on May 15 in an accident when I jumped into the water, not realising there were rocks beneath my feet.” Metal pins were put in and it will take a few months to fully heal, he explained. He says he’s ready to make a new album and hopes to get a record deal, especially

since experiencing the positive reaction of the people in Killarney town. “I’ve been a bit down on my own ability the last few years but now I’ve just got a new lease of life. I love Kerry especially Killarney, it's the best town and the people are really nice. I plan to settle here. I want to get a record deal ASAP. I really want to do something special. I’ll sit outside Universal Records if I have to. I want to absolutely focus on my music and get my songs out there.” To hear Gareth’s music have a listen on soundcloud.com/garethcareymusic.

Ryanair cancels Christmas for Killarney Polish community | By Sean Moriarty Members of the Polish community have raised concerns that they may not be able to get home for Christmas following Ryanair’s decision to withdraw the Kerry Berlin flight as a result of COVID-19 flight restrictions.

BIG LOSS: Aurelia Los says Ryanair's decision to withdraw its Berlin flights from Kerry until next March is a blow to the Polish community in Killarney. Photo: Sean Moriarty

Last month the airline said it was going to remove the Berlin service from the Kerry schedule and that comes into effect today (Friday, October 2). The next available flight to Berlin from Kerry is on March 28, 2021. The route is popular with Polish people who are originally from the Western regions of Poland. Berlin Brandenburg offers good bus connections to Polish cities like Szczecin meaning returning Poles can be in their home city less than two hours after the Kerry flight lands. Alternative routes include a journey from

Killarney to Cork or Dublin airports for flights to Gdansk or Poznan. Both these cities are over five hours by train from Szczecin and the frequency of the connections are not as good as Berlin. As a result, Polish people working in Killarney are faced with a 12 or 14 journey home as opposed to the five or six hour trip via Berlin. “More than half the Berlin flight is Polish people coming home and not so many German tourists,” Aurelia Los told the Killarney Advertiser. “It is not just Polish people, Berlin has flights to many other European cities, the buses connect all the time, and the train from Gdansk is much more expensive than the bus from Berlin.” Aurelia said it was not just Christmas that is an issue and highlighted a personal reason why the flight is so important. “Last March my father was ill, I was able to go to Kerry Airport and be home in a few hours,” she added.

Joanne Downey Family Fundraiser Golf Classic Through the hardest of times, That seemed to have no end We wish to express our gratitude, To you, an amazing friend. The burden of loss, We thought impossible to bear, Has faded into something conquerable, All because you were there.

"Words simply cannot express how grateful and humbled we feel at this time. To our friends, neighbours and all the local businesses in Killarney that played their part in what was an incredible golf classic in memory of our late mother, thank you. Far more than any amount of money that was raised, we are completely blown away by the number of people who participated and/or contributed to the event. To know our mother was held in such high esteem in our home town of Killarney means the world to us. A special and heartfelt thank you to the fundraising committee made up of Connie and Tim O'Sullivan (Killarney Cue Club), Noelle Crosbie (Noelle's Cafe), Niall 'Botty' O'Callaghan (The Fรกilte), Tim Jones (Butchers), Keith Cummins (KC Construction), Pat O'Neill (Style Suite), Tommy Galvin (Legion GAA) and Dermot Cronin (Kerry Mortgage Centre). To Henry Bartlett of Independent Irish Health Foods and The Killarney Lions Club who sponsored the event, as well as the dozens of other businesses in Killarney and further afield who contributed to the raffle, your love, kindness and generosity will never be forgotten by our family. It was felicitous that the winners of the golf classic were three Killarney road traffic guards that would have attended the scene after our mother's accident, and while we are sure the lads were fully deserving of their victory, we can't help but feel mom played her own small part from above. No words can truly express our gratitude, we can only promise to bottle the good will you have shown to our family and pay it forward. We promise to seek new ways to reach out and help others, just as our beautiful caring mother did so often throughout her own life.

Once more, to the people of Killarney - thank you from the bottom of our hearts. from the children of the late Joanne Downey

Marie's charity skydive leaves her feeling exhilarated "I'd do it all again!" These were the first words from Marie O'Sullivan seconds after landing to the group after her much anticipated skydive for Recovery Haven ended. | By Michelle Crean After many false starts this year, with cancellations due to Storm Jorge followed by the lockdown, and just weeks ago heading to Co Offaly to be told last minute that the weather was too windy Marie and her friend Lauren Fitzell finally took the plunge last week. Although nerves came thick and fast as the plane ascended - Marie, a Slimming World Consultant in Killarney, says it's the best experience ever. "It was savage but the most frightening thing I've ever done," she told the Killarney Advertiser. "We got as far as suiting up with harnesses on. It was very windy and experienced solo jumpers were coming down and landing but more erratic that normal. "They said wind was OK they can adjust to that but not when there's bad gusts and so all jumps were cancelled. We rescheduled for the following Sunday and with hardly a cloud in the sky or a puff of wind we got to fly!" Their harnesses were put on before getting on the plane and then in the air the instructor's strapped them together. "They were really funny and bit of jokers trying to frighten us but it was good craic and something to pass the time during the 15 minute climb to 13,000 feet. I was first out followed by other tandem jumpers and solo jumpers and Lauren was last so we never got to chat on the way up and we were too far apart. I had no nerves I felt great, excited even until that roller door went up alongside me and I saw the patch work quilt of fields below and was looking down on one or two clouds."

Then reality hit, she explained. "I thought to myself I've made a terrible mistake but I was already sliding towards the exit and my legs were dangling out. The first thing I felt was the intense cold of the air and the sight was unbelievably beautiful but all I could feel was sheer panic. I turned my head to say something to Brian, my tandem partner, and all he said was no!" Then, she could no longer feel the plane underneath her. "We started head first aiming for the ground at a speed of 130mph. I can honestly say every cell in my body went into horror and shock what I thought I'd love most was now just insane. I suppose I forgot I was attached to someone all I could think of was the falling feeling and the speed no video captures how fast you're falling. After 45 seconds the parachute is deployed and from there on it feels like your barely moving. It was magnificent we could see all bog around us and as far as Dublin. We came down in about five minutes and within seconds we all had landed only feet away from each other safely, and of course the first words were I'd do it again! Now that I know what to expect I think I'd make the most of those exhilarating 45 seconds. Lauren checked her fitness watch after and it showed her heart rate went up to 216 bpm! I'd highly recommend the Irish Parachute Club in Offaly, so friendly and reassuring and safety comes first one hundred percent of the time. We are delighted to have raised funds for Recovery Haven Kerry and are looking for the next thrill already!"

Concerns raised over illegal town parking | By Sean Moriarty Inconsiderate motorists who insist on parking in areas dedicated for other uses have come under fire from elected members of Killarney Municipal District. Councillors raised concerns at Wednesday’s special meeting of Killarney Municipal District. They were concerned about drivers using disabled bays without a blue badge and about drivers using loading bays to park private cars forcing delivery drivers to seek alternative parking adding to the congestion on the town centre. Cllr Marie Moloney was particularly concerned about the misuse of blue parking zones near the Killarney Medical Centre. Meanwhile Niall ‘Botty’ O’Callaghan raised concerns over drivers partially parking on footpaths, in particular at

school time, on New Road. He called for local traffic wardens to be more visible at this time as bad parking was causing problems for people with disabilities or wheelchair users. The calls came the same week that Killarney Gardai clamped down on the illegal use of parking spaces in the town. “We also targeted the illegal use of disabled parking permits within Killarney town,” Garda Brendan O’Donovan told the Killarney Advertiser. “This operation was supported by the Killarney Access Group and also run in conjunction with ‘Make Way Day’ which also took place last Friday. ‘Make Way Day’ is a national public awareness campaign to highlight the issues people with disabilities face getting around their local communities. Killarney Gardaí would like to thank all who helped support this operation, including Mary O'Shea (Killarney Access Group) and all at the Cheshire Home Killarney.”

Excellent demand for good quality detached houses in Killarney The time taken to sell the average house in Kerry has fallen by four weeks in the past quarter, a national property survey has found. The REA Average House Price Survey found that the average time taken to sell across the county fell over the past three months from 11 weeks to seven. As people move away from urban hubs and incorporate new working from home lifestyles, the price of the average threebed semi-detached house in the county rose 1.1% this quarter to €226,000. Killarney prices rose 1.9% this quarter to €270,000, and time taken to sell fell by a fortnight to eight weeks. “There has been excellent demand for good quality detached houses in the Killarney area,” Donal Culloty of REA Coyne and Culloty, Killarney said. “We continue to see couples moving back to the area from London, Dublin and Cork, and there is also a better demand on rentals as single people are not renting in cities and have moved home to live.” Prices in Tralee rose 7.1% over the past 12 months and were unchanged this quarter at €182,000. Time taken to sell in Tralee fell by six weeks this quarter from 11 weeks to five. “The market is strong in Tralee but there is lack of supply, and anything that comes on the market sells immediately,” said

Eddie Barrett of REA North*s, Tralee. “Stock levels are at a low level due to COVID-19, and sellers are not very eager as they do not want people coming into their house. “It is actually a great time to sell, as there are so many buyers on the market, and online auctions are proving successful for our area: we have a one hundred percent success rate over a two-year period. There is demand for large, good quality country homes. Tralee is based by the sea and is a perfect location for people working from home.” The REA Average House Price Survey concentrates on the actual sale price of Ireland's typical stock home, the threebed semi, giving an accurate picture of the second-hand property market in towns and cities countrywide. The average three bed semi nationally is now reaching sale agreed after seven weeks across the country – a significant fall from the 10-week average in June. Despite fears of a downturn in the market during the COVID-19 crisis, the price of a three-bedroomed semi-detached house across the country rose by 0.6% over the past three months to €236,046, an annual increase of 0.4%. Reflecting the beginnings of a flight to rural locations, prices in the rest of the country’s towns rose by almost 1% in 12 weeks to €163,345.

Moll’s Gap road to close for resurfacing works The Moll’s Gap road between Killarney and Kenmare will be closed for one day next week to allow for essential works. There will be no access, in either direction to Moll’s Gap, on Tuesday October 12 between 7am and 7pm to allow resurfacing works at Carrig East Bridge, a few

kilometres before Moll’s Gap itself on the Killarney side. "The bridge is too narrow to keep one lane opened under traffic management while undertaking the resurfacing works,” a Council spokesperson said. Alternative access to and from Kenmare will be via the Kilgarvan road.

GOING BACK IN TIME: Harvesting a wildflower meadow using Muckross Traditional Farms Clydesdale horses ‘Bud’ and ‘Budweiser’ and traditional machinery as part of the National Pollinator Plan to increase the biodiversity of grasslands in Knockreer Estate, Killarney National Park. It also gave staff members Will O’Sullivan (Driving the horses), and National Park staff, Brendan O’Neill (left) and Michael Lynch, the opportunity to display the importance of preserving traditional methods, machinery, using their craft and skill. Traditional methods reap huge reward A look to the past is ensuring a bright future for pollinators and threatened species - as traditional low impact farming returns to the town park. | By Michelle Crean

EXCLUSIVE

Following a spring and summer of careful planning and nurturing, three groups, Killarney National Park, Kerry Educational and Training Board and Muckross Traditional Farms, are seeing the fruits of the labour coming to fruition. It all started with a desire to answer the call of the National Pollinator Plan and increase the biodiversity of some of the grasslands in the town park in Knockreer. Gerry Murphy, who is Head Gardener at Muckross House and Killarney National Park, and National Park staff Brendan O’Neill and Micheal Lynch got to work managing certain areas in the town park to promote the pollinator plan and to increase the available habitat for insects

and invertebrates in general. When Chris Barron from the Kerry Educational and Training Board, who runs the education centre in Knockreer House, got involved, the idea of the grassland management soon took hold. As the idea became a reality and as some of the meadows began to emerge, Conservation Ranger staff working on a low carbon model of grassland management elsewhere in the National Park suggested there was potential to trail some of these methods in Knockreer. A decision to go back in time and use the old traditional method of horses was decided upon. In this day and age you would wonder where such a service could be sourced… well the answer to that is in the Traditional Farms in Muckross House.

OLD TRADITIONAL METHODS

Thanks to Mr Toddy Doyle, Farm and Event Manager at Muckross Traditional Farms, who coordinated the machinery and horses, the project was able to use the old traditional method of cutting and harvesting the grassland. The assistance of Will O’Sullivan, whose expertise in the use of a team of horses and traditional machinery, was also crucial. The use of horses caught the eye of many visitors to the park, who remarked how great it was to see these traditional low impact methods returning. Danny O’Keeffe District Conservation Officer, NPWS explained a number of factors that were taken into account when making this decision. “We needed to try and reduce the weight and loading on soils to prevent compaction, also, to try and reduce, as much as possible, the amount of carbon that went into harvesting the grass a luxury that may not be economically viable in

other operations. This, in turn gave us an opportunity to display the importance of preserving traditional methods, machinery, and above all, craft and skill.” As resource, semi-natural grasslands are hugely important habitats supporting a diverse range of invertebrate, bird and mammal species as well as many rare plant species. These are vulnerable habitats in Ireland and in many instances owe their continued existence to either a continuation of traditional extensive farming practices and/or conservation measures as these habitats requiring ongoing agricultural management. Without periodic grazing or a minimum amount of mowing most grassland areas would become rank, scrubby, or invaded by other species such as bracken. There is high hopes it can serve as an inspiration to other groups and organisations around the country to look to the past in ensuring a bright future for pollinators and threatened species.

Calls for a permanent Killarney monument for frontline workers | By Sean Moriarty Cllr Niall ‘Botty’ O’Callaghan is calling for a permanent monument to be erected in Killarney town centre to honour the commitment given by frontline workers during the pandemic. Cllr O’Callaghan presented the idea at Wednesday’s special meeting of Killarney Municipal District. “Something like a statue to give them permanent recognition,” he said. Kerry County Council officials accepted the idea in principle but warned that there are protocols in place regarding the erection of statues. The official acknowl-

edged that the idea originated in Killarney but it could become a county-wide initiative. The official said it would have to go before the Corporate Policy Group which is made up of the County Mayor and the chair of each Strategic Policy Committee within the Council management structure. Meanwhile Cllr Michael Gleeson asked the Council to renew the lettering on remembrance plaques on Mission Road. “These plaques celebrate the lives of many who served abroad and it is only proper that the names would be legible by all, particularly by the relatives of those commemorated,” Mr Gleeson told the meeting.

No hitches as Miriam and Eddie have a perfect day

WEDDING OF THE WEEK

| By Michelle Crean

Even if it meant getting married without any guests Miriam O'Donoghue and Eddie O'Sullivan were determined to tie the knot after lockdown postponed their original plans.

The couple, who were married on Saturday in Clonkeen Church by Fr George Hayes, and had a beautiful reception in the Muckross Park Hotel, were disappointed that their original plans got waylaid - but are thrilled to now call themselves man and wife. Miriam, who works as a primary school teacher in Ballincollig, is daughter of Michael and Eileen in Clonkeen, Glenflesk, while Eddie, who works in Liebherr, is son of Jackie and Peggy in Whitebridge Manor, Ballycasheen. They were joined by 45 guests made up of family and friends and told the Killarney Advertiser this week that they "had a wonderful day". The bridal party included Miriam's sister Margaret Maguire as Chief Bridesmaid, and good friend Jennifer Kileen. Best man was Eddie's brother John, and groomsman was his friend Donal O'Sullivan. Three flowergirls were Eddie's niece Keelyn O'Sullivan (10), and Miriam's nieces Muireann and Zara O'Donoghue who

are cousins. And all did a wonderful job and looked gorgeous on the day. "It was a great day," Miriam said. "Our original date was April 4 but as it was in lockdown everything was closed. The hotel offered us dates and we chose September. We are just delighted to get married. Even if it was just myself and Eddie with two witnesses we would have done it." The couple asked their priest if they could have their ceremony earlier in the day as the band and hotel had to finish up by 11.30am as per the current COVID regulations. This meant more time with their guests who all enjoyed a fabulous meal and night of dancing with wedding band 'Phil 'n' the Blanks'. "Everyone wore masks and felt a little safer. It was such an amazing day that we even had the drinks reception outside so everyone felt more comfortable." Now the couple are happily enjoying six days away on honeymoon including two nights at Dromoland Castle, two nights in Adare Manor, followed by a stay in Inchydoney.

Join a new club from the comfort of home!

COVID restrictions doesn't mean you can't take on a new hobby or learn a new skill - as one local club is proving - now that they've taken their classes online. | By Michelle Crean The local Killarney Toastmasters group is still very active - although now it's online but they're seeking new members to join them and what a better way to meet new people and socialise. Yes, they are a public speaking club, and as restrictions mean they cannot meet in person for now, they took to virtual meet ups and it's all very easy. Now they're looking for new members and are inviting the public to come along as a guest via Zoom to give it a go. "At Toastmasters we are certainly feeling this challenge, but are doing our best to rise to it," Debby Looney, a member of the club, told the Killarney Advertiser. "For many of us, the thought of standing before a room full of people, be they a class of eager students, work colleagues, church attendees or friends and family at a function, is daunting at best, terrifying at worst. Toastmasters is an international organisation, which has helped members for almost one hundred years to overcome their nerves when speaking in public. A large part of this is also gaining the confidence to take on leadership roles.

It is relevant to so many parts of life, at home, in the workplace and at other clubs and associations," she said. "I personally joined Toastmasters following the funeral of a dear family member. I just could not face my family to say a few words about her, and this haunted me for a long time. I still regret having had such a fear, but am glad to have joined Toastmasters and conquered it. So, speaking from experience, Toastmasters works. However, a large part of the experience of this club, and much of the enjoyment of going, is meeting new people from all walks of life, who give speeches on the most diverse topics.

ZOOM

"Our club now uses Zoom to conduct virtual meetings. There are downsides to this, of course. The personal contact is certainly something I miss. The thing is, there are many upsides also. There is a skill in presenting a speech to people via a computer, a skill which many people now need as they are working from home. When presenting via a computer, it is not just speaking; there is lighting, sound, background and even make-up

NEW MEMBERS WELCOME: Debby Looney from Killarney Toastmasters says new members are welcome to the group which is currently using Zoom due to the restrictions. Photo: Michelle Crean

to consider! Where better to practice than in the safe, positive environment of a club where everyone has your best interest at heart? Zoom meetings also cut out the travelling – you can now enjoy the club from the comfort of your armchair, which is very nice as the winter closes in. Members who live in remote parts of the county, as well as vulnerable members, can now continue to enjoy the social aspect of the club meeting," Debby said. "Despite the new format our meetings have taken, we continue to offer the benefits Toastmasters offers, albeit in differ-

ent ways. We continue to welcome new members, and encourage ‘guests’ to join our meetings, much like we always have. In fact, people who have long wondered what it’s all about have now joined a virtual meeting, and I would encourage anyone to do so!" The group meet every second and fourth Tuesday of the month from 7.30pm to 9pm. Have a look at their Facebook page, email killarney.toastmasters@gmail. com, or phone Debby, on 086 6088156 if you are considering becoming a member or would like to join as a guest.

Parked cars blocking emergency Library gets €13k for COVID-19 measures It was announced this week by the | By Sean Moriarty access to The Demesne Department of Rural and Community | By Sean Moriarty

Bad parking at the Kingsbridge entrance to Killarney National Park is hindering emergency service access to the park. That is according to Cllr Marie Moloney who raised the issue at this week’s special meeting of Killarney Municipal District. She wants Kerry County Council to place parking restrictions at the entrance to The Demesne.

“The road narrows as you enter,” she told the meeting. “And if cars are too near the gates it prohibits emergency vehicles getting through in the event of an accident in The Demesne.” Kerry County Council is to liaise with the National Parks and Wildlife Services on the matter. A similar problem was reported at Fenit Pier after members of Fenit lifeboat were delayed in responding to an emergency call-out last month because of parked cars along the pier.

Killarney library will receive €13,100 in funding to help it reopen fully in line with COVID-19 regulations. The funding will go towards permanent screens and communication systems to allow staff and the public interact in a safe manner. The funding is part of a total of €100,000 announced for libraries in Kerry for essential upgrades and measures in response to COVID-19.

Development. Brendan Griffin TD welcomed the announcement. “Libraries play such an important role in our communities in terms of learning, self-development and for recreational purposes. This funding will ensure that these libraries have all the equipment that they need and are modern facilities that can be used now and for future generations in Kerry,” he said.

Killarney Races October meeting to become annual

EXCLUSIVE

28

| By Sean Moriarty Killarney Racecourse is set to host its first October meeting in living history and this week’s two-day event will pave the way for a new autumn festival on the fixture list.

GOING GREEN: Michael Brennan, Managing Director of Killarney Hotels Ltd., says he's hoping to inspire other companies to use one hundred percent Green Renewable Electricity.

The Europe Hotel goes one hundred percent green

One Killarney hotel is leading by example as it's now operating entirely on one hundred percent green renewable electricity and hopes to inspire others to do the same. | By Michelle Crean For almost 60 years, The Europe Hotel & Resort has been setting the benchmark for innovation, technology, quality standards and customer service within the hospitality industry in Ireland. They have always challenged themselves to lead by example and operate with pride. Now they say it's more important than ever for not only the hospitality industry, but also society as a whole to take significant action. "We are acutely aware of how precious our planet is and count ourselves incredibly fortunate to be situated in one of Ireland’s most treasured locations – a UNESCO World Biosphere no less," Michael Brennan, Managing Director of Killarney Hotels Ltd., said. "We challenged ourselves to make a significant, positive and immediate change to how we operate our business, while still maintaining the incredible facilities

and level of service that we are renowned for." Additionally, The Europe Hotel & Resort is part of the Killarney Hotels Sustainability Group, which is committed to continuously strive and reduce the environmental impact of their services and activities. "Taking into account the scale of the resort and especially the energy consumption of facilities such as ESPA at The Europe, we needed a solution that would allow us to maintain our highly regarded amenities for our guests, while upholding our responsibilities to the environment. Operating on one hundred percent renewable electricity has enabled us to make a change that will have a direct positive impact. As a family owned company, integrity has a high status and one principle is continually “thinking of tomorrow today”. We hope that our action will inspire other companies to take further steps towards a greener, brighter future.”

The May Festival, which usually gets the Irish summer season underway, was postponed this year due to the pandemic. That day meeting will now take place on Sunday and Monday of this week. Killarney Racecourse manager Phillip O’Brien is looking forward to this week as a dress rehearsal for the new festival next year which will take place on Saturday and Sunday October 1 and 2. “It is really something to look forward to,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “We have been looking for an October date for a long time and this year’s condensed calendar gave us an opportunity. Now we have a leg in the door and won’t be giving it up. It will be great for the town, people can go away for the weekend, spend the day racing, book into a hotel and spend the evening up town.” The new festival was made possible after Killarney Race Company gave up two of its five days allocated to the tra-

'Irish Heroes for Children Kevin Barry' By Carmel Uí Cheallaigh A first-ever book on Kevin Barry aimed at a young audience has just been launched, ahead of the centenary of Kevin Barry’s execution next month. 'Irish Heroes for Children Kevin Barry' by author Carmel Uí Cheallaigh, is an ideal and simple introduction for young readers that have an interest in history. On a dark November morning in 1920, Kevin Barry, head held high, marched to his death in Mountjoy Prison. He was the first and youngest person hanged during the Irish War of Independence. Born the fourth of seven children, the family was split between Dublin and Carlow, after the early death of his father. He loved playing Gaelic football, hurling and rugby. A brilliant student, he won a scholarship to study medicine. Kevin also had another life, as a soldier in the Irish Volunteer Army with the sole purpose of obtaining a free independent Ireland. Then his two worlds collided and his part in the Monk’s Bak-

ery Ambush sealed his fate. By sticking to his principles and making the ultimate sacrifice, he instigated the move towards a truce that would change the course of Irish history forever. What led this teenager to forego his bright future for the gallows?

The 'Fast & Furious 9' was to premiere May 22, but was pushed back to April 2, 2021 - so the Hollywood star decided to use his love of music and premiere this instead. GARDEN MAGIC

Gardening - By Debby Looney

Debby is available for advice and garden consultations, just call 086 6088156 or email barnhillky@gmail.com

Now's the time to repair your lawn Autumn is, in my opinion, the most important time of year for an often forgotten part of the garden – that is, the lawn. It is an excellent time to repair damage, fix problems and prepare for next year.

DONATION: Pictured is Domhall O'Sullivan Treasurer of East Kerry GAA Board receiving a donation from Emma Looney of Killarney Credit Union for East Kerry Team in the County Final.

People of Kerry asked to redouble their efforts Statutory agencies have appealed to the people of Kerry to redouble their efforts to stop the spread of COVID-19. Working through the regional inter-agency emergency management group, the HSE, Kerry County Council and an Garda Siochana have worked together since the start of the COVID-19 crisis to co-ordinate the community response. They praised the people of Kerry for everything they have done since March to keep communities safe. Chair of the area HSE Crisis management team, Michael Fitzgerald, thanked the people of Kerry for their huge work to date. “Now, we need to ask you for your support yet again. We are concerned about the increased number of cases we are seeing in some areas, in particular cases which we know have spread in social settings. We are once again at a critical point. The actions we all take right now will dictate the spread of the virus over the coming weeks. The most important thing we can do is to keep our distance from each other, both by coming in contact with fewer people and maintaining at least two metres distance from others if we must see them.” Acting Director of Public Health for the region, Dr Anne Sheahan, said that while

there is evidence of some community transmission of the virus, many recent confirmed cases can be traced back to transmission within family groups and groups of friends. “It is crucial that we all act right now to reduce the number of people we come into contact with. I appreciate that this is a big ask of people, but the alternative is that we see a continued rise in the number of cases.” “Unfortunately, it’s entirely possible to spread the disease even if you don’t have symptoms and are feeling well," she added. "That means it’s possible that you can pick up the virus from a friend while socialising – and then pass it on to another more vulnerable family member or friend without knowing.” The group asked the public to continue to adhere to all Government advice and restrictions, and also to reduce the number of visitors to your own home, limit the number of people you meet outside your home as much as possible, continue to avoid crowds. In particular, if you are socialising, make sure you keep a distance of two metres from others. keep a core circle of people that you meet over the coming weeks. And as always, keep up the safe practices, wear a face covering where appropriate; wash your hands and catch your coughs and sneezes.

Damage which may have occurred include trampolines and paddling pools having been in one place, kids playing football, drought, dog and cat damage… there are many causes! The result of most of these causes is the same, ugly yellow or bare patches of varying sizes. The best thing to do in these situations is to dig over the patch, incorporating some sand and compost, roll over it, (or, in the way of my family when we were kids, strap planks onto everyone’s shoes and get them walking!), rake it level, and reseeding the area. Some problems which occur over the summer can be attributed to drought or rain, leatherjackets and moulds. Drought can cause areas to die back, and reseeding, if there are no further underlying causes, can be done directly over the affected area. There are some excellent seeds for this, look out for gel coated seeds, and feeds incorporating seeds. There is little the gardener can do about moulds, though lichens will be killed by any moss treatment. Damage by leatherjackets is preventable by watering in nematodes. These microscopic creatures are parasitic to leatherjackets, and will kill them at the early larval stage. Those who are not familiar with this pest are lucky – they are the larvae of daddy long legs. Eggs are laid in the lawn in September, and over the winter and spring they hatch. Leatherjackets get their name from their dark, grey/brown leathery skin. They feast on the roots of grass

causing patches to die. Reseeding after the event is a solution, however nematodes will prevent the damage in the first place. Some work to be done in the autumn includes scarifying and aerating. Scarifying is where you get rid of the thatch on your lawn, the thatch being that brownish layer of moss, old grass and debris which sits just below the green. If your lawn is large, there are mechanical scarifiers, both ride on and lawnmower types. Alternatively, a spring-tined rake or a thatching rake will do the job. Getting rid of the thatch will let air back in, as well as removing any diseases which might be lurking there! If you have heavy or water logged soil, consider aerating it and giving it a top dressing. Aerate using a hollow tined fork and fill the plugs back in with a mixture of topsoil; sand and compost 3:6:1. Avoid the use of lawn sand, which is better used in spring. It is sometimes confused with top dressing because of its name. However, lawn sand consists of Ammonia Sulphate, which adds nitrogen at low, spring time temperatures to drive on the grass, Sulphate of iron to kill moss, which are both added to plain sand which acts as a carrier. If you do wish to feed your lawn in the autumn, use a specific feed, which is relatively low in nitrogen – so does not drive the grass on too much – but high in potassium, which will strengthen the roots - very important over the winter.

The goat ate my paperwork! One police officer has a great excuse why her paperwork isn’t done - as a goat ate it!

BEWARE: The Irish Deer Commission is warning drivers to be extra vigilant in the coming weeks as deer may be on the roads.

Motorists urged to be vigilant during deer breeding season It's autumn and in our forests and across our mountains, tensions are rising as the rutting or the deer breeding season gets under way. It's the time of the year when male deer are driven by an urge to reproduce. From late September until early November the clash of antlers will be heard as males show off their virility to potential mates and, like gladiators entering an arena, they parade around showing off their armoury of antlers.

Trump CORNER

While the rut is an amazing experience to witness it is also a time when there is an increased incident of road traffic accidents involving deer as male deer go in search of females, and younger males are ousted by dominant males forcing deer to cross roads and motorways. The Irish Deer Commission (IDC) is calling on motorists to be vigilant at dawn and dusk, when deer are most active, particularly in high risk areas such as woodlands and mountains. According to IDC drivers should reduce speed where they see a warning sign and

stay alert. 'Prepare to stop, never swerve as you could hit another obstacle or oncoming vehicle,' the IDC said in a statement. 'When you see a deer "dip your headlights" as the full beam may cause the deer to freeze. If a deer has crossed in front of your vehicle, be aware that others may follow. Do not approach an injured deer. If you are involved in a deer road traffic accident or come across a deer that has been involved in a road traffic accident, immediately contact the local Gardaí'.

Trump Biden debate turns into a TV farce With just five weeks to go in the US Presidential race between Donald Trump and his rival Joe Biden - it got off to a very rocky and argumentative start in their first live TV debate of the campaign on Tuesday night. Frankly, the best America has to offer is two men in their 70s arguing over something or other – not quite the leadership someone like John F Kennedy would bestow on the free

world. At one point during the debate, when Mr Trump was interrupting him, Mr Biden said: "Will you shut up, man? This is so unpresidential.” Moderator Chris Wallace said to Trump: "I think the country would be better served if we allowed both people to speak with fewer interruptions. I'm appealing to you, sir, to do that." Mr Trump, referring to Mr Biden,

There were no arrests after an officer in the US was headbutted and paperwork eaten - after an uninvited guest got into a police car. The troublemaker climbed into the car, started to chew up paperwork – and then headbutted the officer when she tried to intervene. The whole incident was caught on bodycam footage - and because it was a goat there will be no criminal proceedings brought against him. “The deputy went to a residence to serve some civil papers,” Georgia’s Douglas County Sheriff’s Office wrote on Saturday. “The deputy explained that due to the number of houses she visits daily, she routinely leaves her vehicle’s door open because she has had to retreat on a number of occasions from vicious dogs. Never once did she expect or even consider what was about to happen this day! Even though she was knocked to the ground she was not physically harmed in the incident. At the end of the day we all got a little laugh out of it and we hope you do as well!” responded: "And him, too." Mr Wallace: "Well, frankly you've been doing more interrupting." Probably the most shocking part of the debate was Trump’s refusal to condemn White Supremacist groups like Proud Boys. Founded in 2016 by Canadian-British right-wing activist Gavin McInnes, Proud Boys is a far-right, anti-immigrant, all-male group with a history of street violence against its left-wing opponents. "Proud Boys, stand back and stand by,” said Trump during the debate. Proud Boys have now adopted that line as part of its official mission statement.

Family Addiction Support launch new book The Family Addiction Support Network (FASN) have launched their new book ‘Crossing the Threshold - A facilitator’s guide to running developmental and support groups’.

Basketball Ireland announce partnership with Jigsaw As part of a new partnership, Basketball Ireland will be making a donation to Jigsaw, as well as aiding fundraising for the charity. A series of initiatives are planned over the coming year as part of the collaboration, to help players, coaches, schools, clubs and international sides. Basketball Ireland are in conversations with a charity partner in Northern Ireland and more information on this will be disclosed in due course. “I am honoured to be an ambassador for this partnership with Jigsaw," speaking at the launch Ireland senior men’s captain Ciaran Roe said. "Mental health is so important in modern society, with young people going through so much at the moment, particularly with the difficulties of COVID-19 and how it has affected everyone’s daily

lives. I want people to know there is help and support out there and that they can reach out.” Jigsaw gives advice and support both online and in-person to young people across Ireland aged 12-25. They have a prevention and early intervention approach and believe in the collective role of communities in supporting youth mental health. “Jigsaw’s work throughout Ireland has impressed us and we want to partner with them effectively," Bernard O’Byrne, CEO of Basketball Ireland, added. "Physical activity like basketball is great for mental health, but it doesn’t stop there. This Basketball Ireland partnership with Jigsaw will help highlight the resources out there for those in the basketball community and beyond.”

The launch of this training manual follows on the successful publishing of research commissioned by the FASN, ‘Findings from a study on how families are effected by substance misuse in the North East Region of Ireland’ which was launched in May 2019 by the then Minister for Drugs Catherine Byrne TD. FASN having produced this book in association with Ger Fitzpatrick Fusion Training and Development, and look forward to the roll-out of the Manual/Guide as part of the core training undertaken by the peer led facilitators. The Minister of State Frank Feighan TD said he was delighted to launch the book

on behalf of the FASN. "I strongly believe that families of drug users need to have appropriate, accessible, and timely services available to help them cope with the problems they are facing. It is important that we get the message out there that help is available. A number of key actions in the National Drugs Strategy are focussed on strengthening services to support families affected by substance misuse." While FASN is a registered charity, established in 2002 and became the first group to be partially funded by the then newly formed North East Regional Drug Task Force, it has grown exponentially and unfortunately funding hasn’t kept pace with this growth in service provision. The service needs immediate core funding to secure ongoing delivery of the supports.

Kinsale lady honoured for raising €100k Kinsale woman Pam Norris' 'Cycling for Baby Hearts' fundraiser has reached an incredible €100,000 for life-saving treatment for children born with a condition known as ‘Chernobyl Heart’. In 2015 from her hometown of Kinsale, then 70-year-old Pam cycled the route of the Wild Atlantic Way through West Cork and along the western seaboard to the Northwest and into Derry, to raise these vital funds. The heart has been identified as the organ most vulnerable to the effects of radiation. Chernobyl Children's International (CCI) manages an extensive cardiac programme in collaboration with US CCI Board Member and renowned Cardiac Surgeon, Dr William Novick. Through this programme, CCI

has saved the lives of over 4,000 children in Belarus and Ukraine who suffer from a marked increase in cardiac birth defects since the Chernobyl disaster of

1986. "Due to the ‘Chernobyl Legacy’ we are seeing the devastating effects of the nuclear disaster across generations,"

Adi Roche, CEO of Chernobyl Children's Project International, said. "Were it not for CCI’s intervention, many children suffering with a congenital heart defect because of Chernobyl would die within three to five years. Earlier this month, we held a presentation to recognise and honour Pam’s outstanding achievement of raising the phenomenal €100,000 in CCI’s head office in Cork." The people of Kinsale have been involved with CCI for more than 30 years and they’ve been fantastic, she added. "Pam is a shining example of real compassion, commitment, and dedication. She leaves an enduring legacy and shows us all that age is no deterrent and one person can truly make a difference!"

Top award for Jill and her staff!

| By Michelle Crean It's been a tough year for businesses but one local beauty salon is celebrating being named the Sothys 'Top Performing Salon/Spa 2019'. It's the second time Killarney Toning and Beauty Studio has received the award, the last time being 18 years ago in 2002. Proprietor Jill O'Donoghue says it's a wonderful achievement and good news for her business considering the year that she has endured. "We are delighted to get it as we have worked hard to bring it to Kerry," Jill told the Killarney Advertiser. "Sothys has been here at Killarney Toning and Beauty Salon for 25 years. "It just shows the commitment to Sothys over the years, they are a results driven

professional salon brand. And it's all thanks to the clients and their loyalty to the brand." To gain the award against all the other Sothys salons in Ireland, Jill and her staff had to show product knowledge, undergo continuous service training and offer new treatments to keep clients up to date with the Sothys products on the market. "There's a criteria to follow to get the award," Jill added. "One of the categories is to go to Dublin to refresh our training. Obviously that's changed this year and we've been doing it on Zoom over the last few months." And due to the current restrictions, Jill has missed out on this year's award ceremony. "There was to be a big gala dinner in Dublin but that has been cancelled."

HEALTH & FITNESS Advice - By Shane O’Sullivan Shane is available for advice and fitness consultations, Call 087 403 0894 or email shane@activate.ie • www.activate.ie

Why is core strength so important for your child? Core strength is the development of the torso muscles that stabilise, align, and move the trunk of the body. Bad core strength can cause poor posture which can also affect gross motor and fine motor skills. Building strong core strength is like building a strong foundation for your child. Core strength development starts as an infant. Do you ever wonder why “tummy time” is so important? It prepares the infant for developmental milestones such as crawling, rolling over, and sitting up independently. For primary school aged children, the best way to develop core strength is through good old fashioned exercise and play! Children need daily opportunities to run, jump, climb, crawl and explore. Children with poor core strength will tend to slump with shoulders rolled forward while seated, will have poor endurance, and they may exhibit poor balance just to name a few things. There are many ways to help your child exercise to strengthen their core muscles and at Activate Kids we look to tick all of the boxes. What I often do is

disguise some movements that really target the core but kids don’t realise that’s the main goal; like a bear crawl in the warm up for example. Other ways of encouraging kids to take part in core strengthening exercises is to make the exercise fun and think of a creative name to call it.

LISTED BELOW ARE JUST A FEW EXERCISES/ACTIVITIES FOR CORE STRENGTH: • Wheelbarrow races • Exercise ball • Handstands •S uperman Pose – lying on stomach and lifting arms and legs • Sit ups • Lounge and Twist • Twister – the game • Crawling through a tunnel • Obstacle courses • Hop Scotch Once you realise what exercise/activities your child likes it is then time to zone in on that and use to full advantage when strengthening your child’s core, because after all, it is vitally important!

Clifford named as Ahern’s Mazda brand ambassador Mazda sales pitch for its new Mazda CX-30 GT Sport as being “small enough on the outside to zip around town, but big enough on the inside to get away from it”. A little paraphrasing and these words could be used to describe Kerry football star David Clifford. His goal ensured East Kerry their second County Football Championship in a row last Saturday evening. The day before the big game local Mazda dealer Ahern’s of Castleisland named the Fossa man as their Mazda brand am-

bassador. Clifford's prowess on the football pitch could easily be described as “small enough on the outside of the square to zip around, but big enough on the inside get away from it”. The Japanese manufacturers latest model “exudes a confidence and elegance like few others in its sector” – words that can also be used to describe the star forward who is certain to play a key role in the county team’s delayed Munster and All-Ireland football set up later in the year.

AMBASSADOR: David Clifford accepts the keys of a Mazda CX-30 GT Sport from Pat Ahern and John Cronin of Ahern's Mazda in Castleisland.

Nifty 50s head into the west Honda 50 enthusiasts will be out in force on Sunday as the annual West Kerry Honda 50 run departs from the Anvil Bar in Keel. This year’s event is being run to raise funds for the Palliative Care Unit at University Hospital Kerry. The route covers Slea Head and other popular Wild Atlantic Way roads on the Dingle Peninsula and gets underway at 10.45am with registration starting at 9am at the Anvil Bar. “Last year we had over 30 bikes and it is growing every year,” organising committee member Johnny Daly told the Killarney Advertiser. “All bikes are welcome and we have it organised in such

a way that there will be social distancing at sign on.” Meanwhile the Kingdom Veteran Vintage and Classic Car Club demonstrated the challenges local charities face with fundraising during the pandemic. The club ran a low key version of its Ring of Kerry Run on Sunday last. Usually a two-day event, it was postponed from its original May date. Around 30 cars took part in the scaled back event resulting in €500 being raised for the Palliative Care Unit. Last year’s 40th anniversary event attracted over one hundred cars. The Ring of Kerry Run and other club events raised over €5,000 for local charities last year.

AND THEY ARE OFF: A large group of Honda 50s depart the Anvil Bar for last year's event.

The impact of COVID STUDENTS DIARY on college students This week, as part of our weekly students' column where we hear what school life is now like in a COVID world, Transition Year student Rachel Griffin from Killarney Community College tells the Killarney Advertiser that there's no more gathering in hallways for a quick natter and how going outside for mask breaks to get some air is becoming an essential part of their day.

Much of the media attention around the impact of COVID-19 on education since March revolved around second-level and in particular Leaving Cert students. College students were equally effected and are now embarking on a very different college experience in the 2020-2021 academic year. This week saw many third year institutions begin the college year. With most courses and colleges operating fully or predominantly online for the coming weeks and probably for the entire first semester, students must adapt quickly to the challenge of remote and independent learning.

EMBRACE THE CHANGE

First Years will need to tune in really quickly to the online platforms used by the college and engage efficiently with any email correspondence from the college in relation to registration, timetabling, subject options etc. No doubt having lost out on important milestones during your final year in secondary school, you were looking forward to the freedom and excitement of college life. For most, that is on hold as recent public health guidelines have restricted on-campus activities. Of course it isn’t how you dreamt it would be but as you have shown time and time again, you are up to the challenges of being educated the ‘COVID’ way.

ENGAGE IN CLASSES

Engage in all classes and activities organised to help First Year’s settle in albeit remotely and avail of all the support services provided by the colleges. Try your very best to connect with classmates even if it is online, you will be getting to know each other well throughout the course. Make contact by phone or email with your course co-ordinator and the student union welfare officer if you are struggling academically or personally at any stage. Don’t be afraid to reach out - there is always someone in the college to help. Don’t bury your head in the sand. It can be easy to disengage when you feel disconnected but remember that thousands of others will have similar feelings. Search

the clubs and societies in your college on social media and connect with people who have similar interests.

RETURNING STUDENTS

For those returning to college you may feel that lack of connection with college friends and may not have the same appetite for remote lectures and tutorials but hopefully in time you will get back to having face-to-face contact with lecturers and classmates and enjoy the college experience in ‘real-time’. In the meantime focus on setting goals at the beginning of each week to pace yourself effectively through the semester and don’t forget to reward yourself for doing so! Lack of ‘connectivity’ has caused huge frustration, anxiety and practical difficulties for college students and as a step towards alleviating this Minister Harris announced a support package worth €15 million to provide devices to students in need. This is being managed through individual colleges and ETBs so make sure to make contact with the relevant department if you need to access this support. There are also excellent resources and podcasts available on www.spunout. ie and www.alustforlife.ie to help with adjusting to college life during COVID. In next week’s column we will look at how final year students and graduates can best prepare for the changing landscape of the world of work.

You don’t realise how fast the world is going until it is forced to a halt, without much warning. It was subtle things at first. Some posters were placed, and we were taught a new way to exchange our work through an online system. Then one day it was announced the schools would be closing for a ‘short’ period as the restrictions were getting noticeably heavier. To my class of course it was only seen as being an extra holiday. “See you in two weeks” we joked with one another as the teachers assured the same mindset. If only we knew what was to come. Now seven months later we have returned to the same building but it is almost unrecognisable. Hand sanitiser dispensers hang outside every door and the ‘one-way system’ stickers are stuck in such a way to avoid close contact. The atmosphere in the school is stranger now as the halls used to be filled with the mindless chatter of students heading from class to class. Now they only hold quiet mummers as students are forced to walk a meter apart. It's so strange how walking at a distance has become second nature to us all. Masks cover our faces making breathing a hard task, especially in a classroom environment. I would have never thought my favourite part of my school day would be stepping outside for an ‘air break’. This year is different as both teachers and students are starting off on the same page with not much knowledge or experience to share between us all. Group work used to be a simple task but now it has become complex due to all the confusion of what is and isn't allowed. As a student it has been hard not to have the normal freedom with-

in our classroom as desks stay a meter apart; talking to classmates can feel like a chore rather than an enjoyed interaction especially with masks which make it harder to hear. As a TY student, you expect a lot more opportunities from the outside world, but for us they have no choice but to keep us in. Constantly waiting for the ‘green light’ can cause us to become impatient as normal TY activities can't be confirmed and now must be risk assessed. I appreciate our school's efforts to try to make this year as enjoyable as it can be, but within these confusions and constant changes it leaves both students and teachers wondering when our normal will return, as this is our new normal.

UNSTOPPABLE Clifford fires East Kerry to second consecutive title

KERRY SENIOR FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL ___________________________________________________________________________________

East Kerry

2-15 | Mid Kerry 0-9

| By Adam Moynihan

AUSTIN STACK PARK

East Kerry clinched their second Kerry Senior Football Championship on the bounce on Saturday evening and do you know what the scary thing is? They didn’t even get into fifth gear. Their opponents, Mid Kerry, put it up to the champs in the first half but a pair of goals in the opening stages of the second turned a two-point game into a foregone conclusion in the blink of an eye. As was widely predicted in these pages and others, East Kerry’s forwards were simply too hot to handle and they romped home to a double digits final win for the second year in a row. It was a brutally commanding victory which does not bode well for the chasing pack. As recently as two years ago, as this bunch of talented kids began to graduate to senior, the question was, ‘Will East Kerry win a County Championship in the next five years?’ Now, the question is, ‘Will they lose one?’

RUTHLESS

The signs were ominous for the challengers from the opening seconds when East Kerry midfielder Ronan Buckley burst forward to kick the first score of the game. David Clifford added a glorious second shortly after (another sign of things to come) and although the industrious Liam Carey (two) and Ciarán Kennedy kept Mid Kerry in touch, the holders had a double-scores lead (0-6 to 0-3) heading into the first water break. While Mid Kerry were profligate in

front of the posts, the men from the east were anything but. They went a perfect six for six in that opening quarter as they steadily went about exerting their dominance in a very business-like fashion. Another couple of points by Carey reduced the deficit to the bare minimum by the 20-minute mark but that’s as close as Mid Kerry would get. Another beauty by Clifford, his third, and a converted mark by Darragh Roche extended the gap to three before his namesake, David, pulled one back for the men in green and red. Another converted mark, this time by the brilliant Evan Cronin, made it 0-9 to 0-6 in time added on at the end of the first half but Carey had the last word when he knocked over a 36th-minute free to make it 0-9 to 0-7 at the interval. From Peter O’Sullivan’s perspective, the half-time scoreline was far from disastrous, but there was a nagging feeling amongst those watching that his side were sprinting at full tilt, while East Kerry were merely out for a Saturday evening stroll.

CLIFFORD

Mid Kerry could have made it a onepoint game early in the second half but Carey pulled his free. Two minutes later, it was a five-point game and, in truth, it might as well have been a hundred. David Clifford had been operating a little bit below par (by his own extremely high standards) this year,

MAN OF THE MATCH

The champions had superstars all over the field on Saturday night. Jack Sherwood and Chris O’Donoghue excelled at the back, Ronan Buckley was imperious at midfield, and Dara Moynihan and Evan Cronin ran the show up front. But, for the umpteenth time in his nascent career, the man of the hour was DAVID CLIFFORD. The 21-year-old kicked four superb points from play and his second-half rocket (with his weaker leg, remember) transformed a close game into a cake walk. We’ve said it before and no doubt we’ll say it again: when Clifford is on form, he isn’t just the star of the show. He is the show. CHAMPIONSHIP TOP SCORERS

SPORT

2.10.2020 and the red card he picked up in the quarter-final was perhaps symptomatic of the stop-start nature of his season. The Fossa man was due a big game on Saturday and he duly delivered, the exclamation point coming four minutes after the restart when his explosive right-footed shot flew into the net and almost blew the goalposts out of the ground and into the Dunnes Stores car park. In his post-match interview with Gary O’Sullivan, the Kerry captain was typically modest about his frankly sensational effort. “Dara Moynihan did well to just slip it out when he was in a bit of contact,” he shrugged. “I suppose when you’re off your weaker side, you’re hoping for a bit of luck and thankfully I got it. “It was a big third quarter, which was something we really used to our advantage last year. The first half was fairly nip and tuck. They got a lot of frees. But it was nice to kick on in that third quarter and kind of put it to bed. “We predicted that they would be very open from watching their semi-final and they were. We didn’t get going in the first half and they had their gander up a small bit. We had a few silly turn-

overs. But we were confident enough that we were going to get the goals.” Clifford’s wondergoal rocked Mid Kerry to their core and three minutes later East Kerry hammered the final nail into their divisional rivals’ coffin when Paudie Clifford latched onto Evan Cronin’s spectacular long pass before teeing up Darragh Roche for a trademark finish. Then Jerry O’Sullivan’s side added another four points without reply while at the same time completely stifling Mid Kerry at the other end. When Liam Carey finally kicked the underdogs’ first score of the second half, the clock read 55:55. Their last score prior to that came with the final kick of the first half. Remarkably, this wasn’t the first time East Kerry’s miserly defence shut out the opposition for 20+ straight minutes in this year’s championship. They also did it against St Brendan’s in the last four (28 minutes) and twice against Feale Rangers in Round 1 (20 minutes both times). All told, they conceded just 9.25 points per game this year and new goalkeeper Shane Ryan kept a clean sheet in three of his four outings between the sticks.

STRUGGLING

Much was expected of the tournament’s top scorer, Gavan O’Grady, heading into this decider but the Glenbeigh-Glencar player was clearly struggling with an injury. He kicked his only score of the match in the 58th minute, just after East Kerry sub Brian O’Donoghue had brought his side’s tally to 2-14. There was a nice touch of symmetry to round things out as the man who got the first score of the game, the hugely impressive Ronan Buckley, came forward to kick the last to leave the final score at 2-15 to 0-9. “We’re lucky to be together for a long time,” Clifford noted at full-time. “We played a lot with the Sem together, and a lot underage together. And to be fair to the Rathmore boys, they put the heads down straight away and they’ve fitted in seamlessly. They were a massive addition to us, as you saw there tonight. “It’s a great bunch to be involved with so we’ll really enjoy this.”

EAST KERRY SCORERS: David Clifford 1-4, Darragh Roche 1-3 (1m, 1f), Evan Cronin 0-3 (1m), Ronan Buckley 0-2, Dara Moynihan 0-2, Brian O’Donoghue 0-1. MID KERRY SCORERS: Liam Carey

No surprises as East retain crown

Eamonn Fitzgerald gives his analysis of East Kerry’s comfortable victory over Mid Kerry in the county final

As expected, East Kerry retained their Kerry SFC title in Tralee on Saturday evening last, when they proved far too strong for Mid Kerry with 12 points to spare. In my preview last week I was confident that East Kerry would have too much power up front for Mid Kerry, who were largely dependent on Gavan O’Grady. He was carrying an injury, however, and was well marked. It was up to Liam Carey (06) to notch up the scores. Without really extending themselves East Kerry scored 2-15, but great credit must go to their defence.

DEFENCE

I was impressed by all six of the East Kerry backs, who played as a real team and shadowed the Mid Kerry men well. They rarely fouled and kept shepherding their increasingly frustrated opponents of the scoring area, forcing them to kick for points from impossible angles. Invariably, Mid Kerry shot hopelessly wide. The East Kerry defence played as a unit; no histrionics or sallies up the field, just good old fashioned defence. At times their forwards funnelled back to help out when needed. Mid Kerry’s midfielders did well setting up attacks, but there was little to show for it on the scoreboard. Liam Carey was their best forward and veteran Darran

O’Sullivan put in a great effort with his darting runs, but lack of scoring was his and their down fall in the first half. Still Mid Kerry were very much in it at half-time, just two points in arrears despite shooting eight wides. They will rue Ronan Murphy’s goal chance but Shane Ryan advanced and the ball went tamely wide. Then another effort came off the post. East Kerry shot only two wides in that first period. Pa Kilkenny was doing well in defence while much was expected of Mark Breen, but he struggled. Evan Cronin scored three valuable points over the hour for the winners and Dara Moynihan got two and sent that crucial pass to David Clifford for the brilliant goal that changed the game.

CLASSIC

It was a different game after the restart and in a three-minute showpiece East Kerry exploded on to the stage with two goals. The first was a classic by their iconic star forward. Who else but David Clifford? Dara Moynihan supplied the accurate pass. In a twinkle, Clifford lost Peter Crowley, his marker at that time, and in one co-ordinated movement fired in a tremendous piledriver that left Stephen Cahillane, the Mid Kerry goalkeeper, groping for the invisible and unstoppable missile. Top corner, out of reach, it

would beat any keeper and would do justice to anything comparable in the Premier League. The net bulged in the Killarney end of the Austin Stack Park. Vintage stuff from the Kerry captain. It was the game-changer. The tie was not over yet, but it certainly was two minutes later when Paudie Clifford supplied the pass for Darragh Roche and the Glenflesk sharpshooter took his goal well. His tally for the game was 1-3. The contest was certainly over so early in the second half. The goals were followed by some great points and Mid Kerry were facing the mountain that they had always feared. Now it was a reality. All Mid Kerry could muster were two points in the second half. Jerry O’Sullivan was able to empty the East Kerry bench as early as the 46th minute. Man of the Match was David Clifford, who scored 1-4. Referee Paul Hayes did well, as usual letting the play run on sensibly.

TITLES

Saturday’s win raises East Kerry’s Kerry SFC total to nine, after 1965, the threein-a-rows of 1968-70 and 1997-99, and last year’s triumph. East Kerry are installed as firm favourites to win again in 2021, especially with Kilcummin on board next season. Dr Crokes still lead the way at the top of

the table with 13 titles. There is a direct link between the first of the three-in-a-row and that of 1997-99. Derry Crowley was a key defender in the 1968-1970 successes and John, the Glenflesk man’s son, was a top forward in the winning teams of the nineties. Both also won All Ireland medals with Kerry. Furthermore, John’s son, Luke, just turned 16 years of age and is making great strides with the Kerry underage development squad. The DNA is a winning one so the future looks bright for this rising star.

FRANK MEANEY

There are quite a few men around Killarney with three Kerry SFC medals, but more remarkable still is the feat of a Clare native, who worked in Killarney Post Office for many years. Older readers of this sports column will remember Frank Meaney, the genial person selling half penny stamps behind the counter in New Street. He is the only man I know who won three SFC titles in three different counties. First in Kerry, then on to Clonmel where he won his Tipperary SFC medal with Clonmel Commercials, and then back home to his native Clare where he won his third medal with Kilrush in the sixties. A remarkable achievement by Frank.

Fans demand refunds as live stream crashes again Kerry GAA came under fire last Saturday night when technical difficulties with their county final livestream left thousands of viewers staring at a blank screen. As had been the case in previous rounds, supporters were invited to purchase the stream for the big match between East Kerry and Mid Kerry via 247.tv, this time at a cost of €10. Anticipation was high but things quickly turned sour when the stream crashed midway through the first half, prompting scores of supporters to take to Twitter and vent their frustration. Among other things, the stream was branded a “joke”, “shocking” and a “disgrace”, and many viewers demanded a refund. One fan commented: “Full cash refund please. Service not of merchantable quality or fit for purpose. Let me know where I can send on my bank details for the full cash refund. Sale of Goods and Supply of Services Act 1980.” The tweeter went on to express his gratitude to his former business studies teacher, Mike Leahy, who schooled him on his consumer rights when he was a first year student at St Brendan’s College. A Kerry GAA tweet which contained the link to the stream received 78 replies in total, almost all of which were complaints. The tweet got just three RTs and 19 likes, and two of the RTs were also complaints. It was a ratio that would make any social media manager break out in a cold sweat.

GRIEVANCES

The grievances naturally centred around the drop in coverage, but in reality much of the dismay actually stemmed from the fact that this was not the first time a Kerry GAA livestream had failed. Previous broadcasts were also beset by technical difficulties, perhaps most notably the quarter-final tie between Mid Kerry and Kenmare Shamrocks, which cut out in stoppage time as Kenmare were probing for an equaliser. Calls for refunds were ignored then, with Kerry GAA stating that the technical issues were unavoidable and, ultimately, not their fault. Saturday evening’s stream came back on after a matter of minutes but even when it was back working, viewers had another complaint to make. One fan noted that the on-screen scoreboard was incorrect. Upon reviewing the video it was found that the score failed to update on three separate occasions, which meant that viewers were looking at the wrong score

for six minutes in total.

FINANCIAL REASONS What made last weekend’s debacle even more maddening for supporters is the fact that the state broadcaster, RTÉ, had offered to show the county final on freeto-air television. As was reported in The Kerryman, RTÉ would have paid Kerry GAA a substantial fee for the rights to the game but Chairman Tim Murphy confirmed that they had rejected the bid for financial reasons. “From our perspective, what we would get from terrestrial TV would in no way come close to what we would hope to get out of the streaming,” he said. This was the second year in a row that Kerry GAA turned down a national broadcaster. TG4 were keen to show last year’s final between East Kerry and Dr Crokes but the County Board decided that they would make more money from match tickets if the game was not aired on TV. That may well have been true, but it also prevented a lot of people who were, for whatever reason, unable to travel to Tralee that day from seeing one of the biggest games in living memory.

DISAPPOINTED

To be honest, I have to say that I have been a little disappointed with Kerry GAA’s response to this latest controversy. None of the online complaints were addressed over the weekend, no explanation was provided, and, at the time of going to print, no apology was forthcoming. In fact, the only person who received a reply on Saturday night was the one observer who praised the “very enjoyable @ Kerry_Official county football final livestream”. Kerry GAA quote retweeted the comment, thanking the man in question, so all of their 65.8k followers could see his positive feedback. Understandably, this only agitated people further. This week I reached out to the County Board to see if they would be making any statement regarding the stream but they declined to comment. The only matter they would be drawn on was the one concerning season ticket holders who are unhappy with having to pay for livestreams when the passes they bought at the start of the year would have covered their admission if supporters were allowed to attend. A number of these fans had asked me to follow up on this issue as they were unhappy with the response (or lack thereof) they had received from the County Board, but I was simply told that concerned season ticket holders can contact Kerry GAA directly.

REFUND While I understand that it is a big ask to give everyone a refund when the disgruntled customers may well number in the double-digit thousands, it is not unheard of for county boards to do so. As recently as September 5, Mayo GAA handed out refunds after their livestream of the county semi-final crashed. They even went one step further by putting on the following day’s matches (the other county semi-final and an intermediate semi-final) for free. Last year, Tyrone GAA also refunded fans when their county final coverage experienced technical difficulties. No one wants to see Kerry GAA losing out on any sum of money and we must remember that everyone involved has been trying their best. A lot of work has gone into the streaming project and they deserve our gratitude for that. But we must also think of the supporters. Over the past few months, the county’s most loyal football fans have forked out a considerable sum of money for access to a service. Unfortunately – and this much is undeniable – the service hasn’t always worked as it should have (Saturday’s final being a case in point). The ‘refund’ option might be an unpalatable one for the County Board, but these fans deserve more than just dead air.

Gold for Kissane in Kerry Road Race Conor Kissane has been crowned Kerry Road Race champion after just about getting the better of fellow Killarney men Richard Maes and John Brosnan in Gneeveguilla. A three-man breakaway took flight away from the rest of the field in the Sliabh Luachra CC-hosted event and while they were pursued by a strong group of chasers, they survived out front to fight it out for the medals. Kissane and his Killarney Cycling Club teammate Brosnan had Maes, racing for Strata 3-VeloRevolution, for company. While Maes did his best to get clear of the Killarney CC men, he had to settle for the silver medal in the end with Brosnan taking the bronze, sealing an impressive 1-2-3 for Killarney riders. Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser in the aftermath of his win, Kissane said he was pleased to get over the line in first. “Richie Maes from VeloRevolution attacked straight away and myself and John Brosnan got across him on the second lap,” Kissane explained. “That was it then, it was the three of us together until the end. It was close. Myself and Richie sprinted it out at the end so it was neck

and neck really. I was very happy to get the win.” After this event, Kissane quickly turned his attention to the National Time Trial Championships which took place yesterday where he finished tenth and the National Road Race Championships which are scheduled for tomorrow. There were plenty of medals for Killarney Cycling Club to celebrate in the other grades at the Kerry Road Race Championships. In the Junior/A3 category, Patrick Galvin won silver and Aaron O'Donoghue clinched bronze. These placings gave Killarney CC the team medal. John Crowley came second in the M50, Adam Lenihan won gold in the U16 boys race, Louis Steadman Murphy won bronze in the same event, and Donagh O’Connor was first in the U14 boys category. Shayna Daly also claimed bronze in the U14 girls race to cap a fine day’s work for Killarney Cycling Club.

Big cup win for Killarney MCGILLYCUDDY CUP FINAL _________________________________________________________________________

TOWN PARK, LISTOWEL

Holders advance in West Munster Cup

The Killarney U18s successfully set out on their quest to retain the U18 West Munster Cup with an impressive victory over Killorglin in a sun-soaked Ballymalis on Saturday. Killarney started strongly, dominating possession and territory and working through controlled phases. Both sides converted early penalty opportunities, which were kicked by Peter Walsh for Killarney and James Byrne for the home side. However, the visitors’ ability to stretch the home defence and ramp up the pressure eventually yielded first half tries for right wing Tomás Clifford, left wing Ronan Buckley and inside centre Dean Bradley Cronin. The half-time score was 20-3 in favour of Killarney. The holders were in no mood to relent after the break and, following more excellent collective interplay and hard running, Dean Bradley Cronin again crossed over the tryline to put the fixture beyond doubt. Several scoring opportunities were squandered before a late burst saw several forwards getting over the whitewash. First, a Pádraig Talbot basketball hook pass put Brendy O’Donoghue over to score against his schoolmates. Then No. 8 John McCarthy broke from a scrum on halfway

and scorched away to touch down. And finally, with the last play of the game, prop Rob Nealon crashed over for his first try for the club. Peter Walsh slotted seven points with the boot. Killarney were led from the front on the day by an abrasive and dynamic forward unit. The front row was comprised of Rob Nealon, Brendy O’Donoghue and captain Matt McAuliffe. The second row was made up of Adam McSweeney, Sam Casey, Evan Mannix and Darren Cronin. Ozdenis Koyun, John McCarthy, Brendy O’Donoghue and Shane McAllister competed in the back row. The backline remained unusually fixed with Peter Walsh, Donnchadh Grealy, Ronan Buckley, Dean Bradley Cronin, James Kennelly, Tomás Clifford and Mark Sheahan all impressing with speed, skill and clever interplay. Killarney begin their Munster League campaign on Saturday when they take on Abbeyfeale in Abbeyfeale at noon.

Killarney got the game underway on an afternoon perfect for running rugby and enjoyed good early pressure from the off. Listowel were resilient in defence though and it took the full first quarter before Killarney were able to turn pressure into points. Good ball retention in midfield gave centre Mike Sheahan the chance to break the line, flying through the middle to touch down. And there would be more to follow before half time with two more tries coming before the break, even with Killarney down to 14 men for 10 minutes. The first was down to excellent work from scrum half Mícheál Casey who put it on a plate for Paul O’Sullivan to go over from close range. O’Sullivan turned creator for the second, seemingly enjoying his shift at fly half, with good vision to ultimately release Brendan Fuller for the try. And Fuller was able to convert his own try, remaining flawless from the tee to make it 21-0 at the break. It wasn’t all plain sailing for Killarney though and it must be said that the J2 opponents stuck to their task well throughout, showing good determination to cancel out an early try from Killarney 10 minutes into the second half. This time it was John O’Connor’s

turn to round off a move straight off the training paddock as the backs made the most of clean lineout ball from a wellplaced penalty kick to touch. The last quarter of the game was in fact played with 14 men on each side for a period, with a red card for Killarney and a sin bin for the hosts. During those 10 minutes, John O’Connor doubled his tally for the day, this time from open play through more good hands in the back line. With 15 men back on the pitch, Listowel pulled another try back making it 12-33 but in the end it proved too little too late with club captain Damo O’Carroll sealing the victory at the end. Starting captain front rower Paul Moynihan accepted the cup, with kind words from both sides and whilst new and old faces all played their part in the win, both youngsters Ciarán O’Brien (former U18) and John O’Donoghue (whose sister plays for Killarney U16s) impressed on their senior debuts. The seniors now look forward to the start of the season proper, with a tough test away to Bantry Bay RFC on October 11. Socially distant training at Aghadoe continues at 7.30pm on Tuesdays and 8pm on Thursdays, with new players always welcome.

RISING HIGH: Killarney and Listowel contest a lineout in the recent McGillycuddy Cup final at Town Park.

Nagle confirmed for new Belgian World Rally Championship event Hyundai Motorsport has revealed that Craig Breen and Paul Nagle will contest the seventh round of the 2020 FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) with the team. The Irish crew will follow up a competitive podium finish in Estonia with participation in Ypres Rally Belgium (November 19-22), their first tarmac rally in the Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC. Breen impressed at Ypres last year in an Volkswagen Polo R5, taking a resounding victory, so he brings important experience to the team as the event assumes championship status for the first time this season.

“Craig and Paul showed in Estonia what they can achieve when they have the correct tools to do the job. They both demonstrated their strength in Ypres last year - winning in a rival R5 car - so they bring invaluable experience and knowledge of this event to our team. The championship has closed up as a result of our 1-2 in Estonia, so we have to continue to field our strongest line-up in each of the few final rounds. I believe Craig and Paul are the best crew to join Thierry/Nicolas and Ott/Martin in Ypres to help us finish the year as strongly as we can,” said Hyundai Motorsport Team Principal Andrea Adamo.

Muckross Rowing Club IRISH OFFSHORE ROWING CHAMPIONSHIPS: Last weekend, nine of our members took on the top offshore rowers in Ireland at the Offshore Rowing Championships held in Portmagee. Muckross RC was represented in three events. Well done to our two Mens Quad crews who raced in separate heats on Saturday. The crew of Roger Harty, PJ Walsh, Sean Real and Noel Kelleher were coxed by John Beazley and placed 7th of 8. John again coxed the crew of Brendan O’Neill, Marko Tot, Tim O’Shea and Jeremy Kenny in the next heat with the crew finishing second to Templenoe to qualify for Sunday’s final. An unintended late dash to the start line for the final saw the Muckross boat lag an explosive lead taken by favourites Myross, Wicklow and the following pack. Over the 4km course, Muckross did rein in two crews from Callinafercy and Arklow to finish 7th overall with Myross the winners. Marko Tot also raced in the heats of the Mens Solo, placing 5th. He later teamed up with Sheila Clavin of St. Michael’s RC Limerick in the Mixed Double, with another 5th place finish in the straight final of that event. Overall a very successful outing. A special word of thanks to John Beazley for coxing and towing the boat trailer.
