Garda investigation into fires launched

Killarney Gardai have launched an investigation - and plan to work with members of Killarney Fire and Rescue and officials from the National Parks and Wildlife Services - to find out where and how the one of the biggest fires to rip through almost 3,000 acres in Killarney National Park started. | By Michelle Crean Dedicated and exhausted fire fighters and volunteers spent days going from fire to fire with little or no rest as they tried to get the blaze under control which devastated the ecology and came close to setting homes, a school and a church on fire. There was also a real threat for the ancient Oak Woods and Tomies Wood, but hard working fire fighters and volunters managed to avert danger. And with the announcement by ministers during a visit to the park on Monday, that 50 more conservation rangers are to be hired to help protect national parks in Ireland - the Department of Housing and Local Government this week told the Killarney Advertiser that they cannot disclose how many extra will be hired for Killarney

National Park. The fire - described as worse than the major blaze in 1984 - began at approximately 11am on Friday night and is believed to have started on the Kenmare Road. Not long after it spread out of control due to high easterly winds and raged through the park over mountains and lowlands devastating the ecology of the area in what is described as "the worst fire in the National Park in living memory". It took three days and was a huge undertaking with difficult terrain both on the ground and on higher mountain areas for members of Killarney, Killorglin, Sneem, Kenmare and Mallow Fire Service, as well as the Killarney Water Service volunteers who gave up their time and rowed in to bring it under control as quickly as they

could. The Irish Air Corps deployed an AW139 helicopter to support the firefighting operation on Saturday and Sunday which was increased to two AW139 helicopters and one EC135 helicopter on Monday. In total the Air Corps dropped over 132k litres of water on the area throughout the operation, using a 'Bambi Bucket' with a capacity of 1270 litres. Council staff, the Air Corps, private helicopters, the Civil Defense and Meitheal volunteers were also all part of the major operation which eventually saw fires finally brought under control by Monday but crews were put on standby for 24 hours as a precaution in case fires started up again in some areas.

PREVENTION

Minister of State at the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage Malcolm Noonan, and Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage Darragh O'Brien, Education Minister and Kerry TD Norma Foley, Chief Executive of Kerry County Council Moira Murrell, Mayor of Killarney Cllr Brendan Cronin, Kerry Mayor Patrick Connor Scarteen

and TD Brendan Griffin visited Killarney on Monday to access the severity of the damage and met with the NPWS and Fire Service staff. During their visit the minsters said they were shocked at what they saw and said that setting up a public awareness campaign "is going to be essential" to prevent something like this happening again. "We were shocked. We went out on the boats and it's quite shocking the impact. It's quite devastating to see this," Minister Noonan said. "It's happened in an area of high ecological sensitivity in the National Park. The scale of it is unprecedented. We need ecologists to access what will be the impact." Minister O'Brien said that there would be "extra resources" for Killarney National Park. "Our heritage and our parks are really important to us. We will see extra resources here in Killarney National Park." Minister Foley added that she doesn't believe that it'll impact negatively on tourism for the area.

Eye witnesses felt "helpless" | By Michelle Crean Three friends who saw the flames describe what it was like in to the early hours of Saturday morning. Cathal O'Connor, Steven Fleming and Harold Reynolds saw the fires around 12 midnight from Muckross. "We called the fire service and sent them to Dinis car park which seemed very close to the original fire," Cathal, who is from Kilcummin, explained to the Killarney Advertiser. "The fire quickly gained size but appeared manageable when the fire services arrived until it travelled further behind Dinis and jumped across to the Eagles

Nest, where it travelled up the mountain on the strong easterly winds that were around that night. A dark red hue filled the already very bright moon lit sky, the intense red and oranges dominating the landscape making Mount Eagle resemble that of Mount Doom [from 'The Lord of the Rings' film trilogy]. We just watched in dismay as the fire took over the park, feeling helpless."The fire crew and Gardai were on the scene quickly and did a great job, he added. "We stayed and watched for a few hours and returned the next day to check the damage. You'd mistake the once lush green landscape for the land of Mordor, now scorched and barren."

FLAMES: Cathal O'Connor took this image of the flames in to the early hours of Saturday morning.

Heroes save ancient woods and homes | By Michelle Crean The heroes of the weekend were the dedicated fire fighters and volunteers who worked tirelessly with little time for rest - until the fires were fully under control. Killarney Station Officer Paudie Mangan has praised all involved in tackling the fires and the tremendous support received by the community who provided food and drinks to the tired workers and volunteers. Initially when called out on Friday night he described how the fire was "fairly al-

right" at that stage but how the "strong wind developed the fire very quickly". There was only one crew at the scene when another call came in for the Coolies area and Kenmare Fire Service had to be dispatched. As the fire on the Kenmare Road got stronger and close to the road at Dinis, the Killorglin crew joined the fight. Kenmare then left Coolies and fell in with them. "It was heading up to the Eagle's Nest and the Long Range River - that was an all nighter. We had everyone on low ground and it was extinguished by 5am." Killorglin and Kenmare crews were

stood down but the Killarney crew stayed on the scene monitoring the fire on the mountains which they had had no access to. "At first light I contacted the Park Rangers as the ancient wood, if that caught fire there would have been severe consequences for the park." The first helicopter arrived on scene at 2pm on Saturday. A fire crew was deployed to the Long Range River, Doogary and Tower Woods. The Killarney, Sneem and Killorglin crews were also on scene as well. Killarney Water Rescue brought some of the fire fighters across

the river "with great difficulty" as hoses and pipes had to go into a second boat. "The terrain was a big challenge, a lot of hard work, but it paid off." On Sunday crews again went by boat to Doogary Woods. Later Killarney, Kenmare, Killorglin and Macroom tackled the fires in the Black Valley until 1.30am with Killarney fire crews staying on scene until 3am as a precaution. He added that the fires came as close to 10 metres of the school. By first light on Monday a private chopper came on scene. "Our concern was that the fire was going over towards Tomies Wood. The chopper was trying to extinguish the top of Tomies mountain and the Air Corp joined at 10.30am and the fire was under control before lunchtime on Monday. The choppers remained for most of the evening to make sure there was no danger." In his 30 years service, Paudie said that it is the largest fire of his career. "I want to say thank you to every neighbouring brigades that fell in. All worked extremely hard and everybody gave it their all."

COMMUNITY SUPPORT Over the course of the three long days and nights on duty, they had little time to eat - and Paudie said he'd like to say a huge thank you to the communty who came to their aid. "On behalf of Killarney Fire Brigade, we would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone in the community of Killarney for the donations of food and refreshments over the weekend. The generosity of the people of Killarney and surrounding communities never ceases to amaze us. The thoughtfulness of everyone, from the people who dropped sandwiches, water, fruit and snacks and homebaking and all the businesses who gave us refreshments. They're are too many to mention, but we wish to thank each of you most sincerely for your generosity, we really appreciate it all."

"Worst fire in living memory" - Peter O' Toole | By Michelle Crean Former Park Ranger Peter O'Toole said this week that the fire is "the worst in the National Park in living memory". Peter, who patrolled the park for 40 years before retiring in 2019 said it was worse than the 1984 fire which destroyed a large part of the park. "It's devastating," he said, speaking about the impact the fire has had on the ecology. "Some will never survive again I imagine. There's a lot of work to

be done." Cllr Donal Grady said the true scale of what has happened is hard for people to comprehend. "It's heart-breaking to see the birds, all the flora and fauna, the eggs devastated. Their habitats are absolutely ruined and people really don't understand how bad it is." There's also huge concern about carbon from the fires entering lakes in the coming days and weeks which will have another significant impact on the local environment.

"It was the biggest fire I have ever seen - the shoes were burnt off us" | By Michelle Crean The fires in the Black Valley almost had a devastating impact on homes, the local school and church - and left animals severely scorched. In his 75 years farming the land, Gene Tangney said he had never seen a fire so bad and that "the shoes were burnt off of us". Gene, who lives near Lord Brandon's Cottage at Gerahmeen by the Upper Lake, became aware of the fire early on Saturday morning and he and his sons Patrick, Niall, Eugene and Donnacha as well as his neighbours, spent hours helping fire fighters tackle the flames on the ground and had to drive the animals through the flames - so much so that some were left black and scorched. He told the Killarney Advertiser that he was hugely concerned for his animals as strong winds brought the fire across the Long Range River twice.

Fires out but BBQs continue | By Michelle Crean The heroes who worked tirelessly to save homes, buildings, animals and woodlands for three exhausting days with little or no rest didn't get much time to catch up on sleep as they were again called out to more fires. On Monday evening at around 4pm as fire crews were checking hotspots to prevent them from reigniting they were told about people lighting BBQs in the area. Station Officer Paudie Mangan was at Ladies View where they had set up a command centre when he was stopped by a cyclist who told him a couple had lit a BBQ nearby. "I said I'd do a quick loop and I was stopped by a cyclist who told me a couple had lit a BBQ and I asked them to put it out which they did."

On Wednesday while checking hotspots in Dinis which began to flair again, a woman told Paudie about a man who had pulled in on a boat and had lit a fire 500 yards from what was burnt.

DIFFICULT

He added that attending some of the fires was made harder by the crowds of people who came to see what was happening over the weekend. He said that moving fire appliances in that particular area where roads are extremely narrow with steep bends was made "extemely difficult". It was "pandemonium" and the Gardai had to be called in, he explained. Later the fire crews closed the roads themselves as a second crowd gathered which was "impeeding them" from doing their job. "It's a danger and it completely slows us down."

30.4.2021 "It went to the Eagle's Nest and the Glena Mountain then the Purple Mountain into my land. Then it landed in to the Black Valley on Sunday. It spread very fast when it got there and got close to the houses and the church. There were a lot of fire fighters on the ground and a brigade of men on the mountains." The danger, he explained, was not so much the fires on the ground - but the furs which were flying through the air with the strong winds which could have left them with serious burns. "You'd a strong wind behind this fire the fire was highly dangerous. It could change in seconds and blow in to your face. We were all frightened. We had to mind ourselves with the wind as furs were flying through the air - next thing the fur, which was alight, could land down on your head. The shoes got burnt off of us," he said. "We were exhausted because we had three days of it. Some sheep got scorched as we had to drive them through the fire and we rescued a lot of sheep. You have to see it to understand it. The fire fighters did a good job, they saved the house and lots of the fencing." The aftermath for Gene and other farmers in the area is blackened lands and animals who have no where to graze. He now faces "a longer winter" paying for a least an extra month of feed for them. "It looks very bad, everything is black. If we get mild weather and growth at least it would ease the pocket a bit. It's going to be very costly."

Don't blame the farming community | By Sean Moriarty Kerry Macra Na Feirme has said that a full investigation into last weekend’s forest fires must be concluded before blaming any sector for starting them. The cause of last week’s blazes has yet to be established and is being investigated by Killarney Gardai, the National Parks and Wildlife Service and Killarney Fire and Rescue. Macra Na Feirme has defended local farmers saying there is no evidence to blame them for the fires that were start-

ed outside of the defined gorse burning seasons. “The agricultural sector is often used as a scapegoat. However, in this circumstance, there is no evidence yet to speculate who or where the fire started,” a branch spokesperson told the Killarney Advertiser. “Kerry Macra Na Feirme firmly believes that a thorough investigation should be carried out before any blame is cast on the agricultural sector. It is our hope that the culprits are caught and reprimanded for their actions.”

Trail of destruction is "extremely distressing" Anybody with information that may help identify what or who caused the fire in Killarney National Park is being urged to report the matter to the authorities immediately. Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce President, Niall Kelleher, made the appeal saying that the "appalling scenes" in Killarney National Park over the weekend have left "a dreadful trail of destruction" and has caused "real upset in Killarney". "First-hand reports from those involved in fighting the fires, and photographic coverage and video footage showing large sections of our iconic Killarney park ablaze, have been difficult to digest and the whole episode is extremely distressing," he said. "Killarney National Park is the jewel in Ireland’s tourism crown and the impact the fires have had, causing extensive damage to approximately one third of the park, scorching the land and decimating wildlife, including rare and important habitats and species, has been met with shock and dismay by everybody." It is impossible for anybody that loves Killarney National Park to try to come to terms with such sheer and utter ecological wreckage, he added. "A number of ancient woodlands were severely damaged and will take a long number of years to recover but at least the magnificent wood at Tomies was protected, thanks to the phenomenal efforts of the emergency service and volunteers. In addition to putting our park and adjoining properties and

households at risk, the fires also placed a huge and unnecessary burden on the emergency services who have been the true heroes throughout a very long and difficult weekend. No words of mine can adequately sum up the bravery and dedication of the Kerry Fire Service, the National Parks and Wildlife personnel, Kerry County Council crews, Killarney Water Rescue, Search and Recovery Unit, Killarney Meitheal volunteers, the Air Corps, private helicopter operators and all others who played their part in fighting the inferno," he said.

FULL INVESTIGATION

Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce believes that it is imperative now for a full investigation to be launched into the cause of this devastating incident, not only to attempt to discover who was responsible for the carnage but to identify ways to lessen the chances of it ever happening again. "Whether it was a carelessly discarded match, the remnants of a barbecue or bonfire or a deliberate act of vandalism that sparked the blaze, it appears it was entirely irresponsible and reckless and it shows a disregard not only for nature but for human life. Chamber would urge anybody with any information that may help identify what or who caused the fire to report the matter, without delay, to the authorities."

Mayor thanks staff and volunteers Killarney Mayor Cllr Brendan Cronin this week thanked everyone involved in helping to contain the blaze for "their tremendous efforts". He said that great credit is due to every person involved for their dedication and commitment. "I want to personally thank Kerry Fire Service, Air Corps, National Park and Kerry County Council staff, Civil Defence and Gardai for their tremendous efforts battling what was a massive fire fighting situation over the weekend in trying to contain the devastating fires in Killarney National Park," he said. "Sadly, thousands of acres of upland habitat has been destroyed by the fires

and the full extent of the devastation on the natural environment and on local wildlife in a special area of conservation is yet to be fully determined due to vast area that's involved. Thankfully there was no serious injury reported however the gravity of the danger must be highlighted." The NPWS are working closely with An Garda Síochána to investigate the possible cause, he added. "Following the visit to the National Park and meeting with Minister for Heritage Darragh O'Brien and Minister for State for Heritage Malcom Noonan, I want to welcome their commitments of support and assistance for the National Park and the local agencies in combating this type of devestation reoccurring."

Long term environmental consequences The impact of last weekend’s fire in Killarney National Park will be felt for years to come, according to officials from the MacGillycuddy Reeks European Innovation Partnership, an environmental group that works with local farmers and other stakeholders to promote environmentally friendly living in the region.

“There are no words to describe the devastation caused after last weekend’s horrendous fire in Killarney National Park and some of the surrounding areas. The effects will be felt for years to come. We commend the personnel who worked tirelessly to extinguish the fire. We hope that whoever

started the fire is held to account,” said project spokesperson Patricia Deane. “We in the MacGillycuddy Reeks EIP project will continue work to raise awareness of the principles of Leave No Trace and responsible use of the outdoors with recreational users and work closely with participant farmers in the Reeks to encourage appropriate grazing.” The MacGillycuddy Reeks EIP project is funded by the Department of Agriculture, Food, and the Marine under the Rural Development Programme 2014-2020. It is a locally-led agri-environmental project running from 20182022 and is one of 23 EIP-Agri Operational Groups projects in Ireland.

Warning on legalities of Rhododendron control | By Sean Moriarty People have been warned not to take to control of the invasive Rhododendron plant into their own hands following last weekend’s fires in the National Park. While the cause of the extensive fire has not yet been established, one of the ironies of the devastation is that the fires did wipe out a lot of Rhododendron plants. But the fires also damaged other important wildlife habitats, bird nesting grounds and deer grazing patches too. Park Rangers and volunteers have

been struggling to control the invasive plant for years. There is a specific way to control the spread of Rhododendron and burning the plant is not one of them according to Cllr Michael Gleeson who is also a member of the Killarney Mountain Meitheal, a volunteer group that does so much to keep the park looking pristine at all times. “No person is legally entitled to do anything with Rhododendron unless under direct and immediate supervision from National Park staff,” Cllr Gleeson told the Killarney Advertiser. “Anyone who attempts to do otherwise is breaking the law.”

Safe social bubbles for this year's Nathan's walk | By Michelle Crean Those planning to take part in this year's 'Nathan’s Walk Darkness into Light' are being asked by organisers to do so in a safe manner. Marie O'Carroll who set up the Killarney walk in 2011 following the loss of her 14-year-old son Nathan, says the walk,

which takes place this year on May 8 at 4.15am, has to be done safely with social distancing measures to ensure people are adhering to current restrictions. "People who do the walk, please do so in your own bubble and practice social distancing," she said. The idea behind 'Nathan’s Walk, Darkness into Light - Pieta House' is to help spread awareness to help prevent sui-

cide and self harm. It's also a chance to raise vital funds for the service provided free by Pieta House. "This year’s walk is very important to make people aware of the services provided by Pieta House to help those in need. We would ask people to register for the walk online and make their donations for 'Nathan’s Walk Darkness into Light' to keep their services to the

very high standard.". She added that if you take photos on the night you can send them to @nathanswalkdarknessintolight on Instagram or by WhatsApp to 087 9001135. You can also private message them to Facebook: Nathan’s Walk Darkness into Light to be shared.

FINAL JOURNEY: Johnny Hickey makes his final journey along New St, his uncle John Hickey leading the cortege in one of the family's famous rally cars. Photo: Eamonn Keogh

Town stunned by sudden loss of Johnny Hickey There was an air of stunned silence across the town as news of the sudden and untimely death of popular Killarney man Johnny Hickey started to filter through. | By Sean Moriarty The devoted father of three and tireless community worker passed away suddenly on Saturday morning aged just 37-years-old. Tributes have been pouring in since for the Riverside Drive resident, who was originally from Pinewood Estate. There is no aspect of Killarney life that Johnny had not touched. He was best known as a dedicated member of Killarney and District Motor Club and a champion rally co-driver. He also volunteered for other clubs like Killarney Cycling Club, Legion GAA, Killarney Athletic FC, St Paul’s Basketball Club and Killarney Tidy Towns. His passion for motorsport stemmed from his father Charlie, an equally popular garage man in the town. The father and son team competed together for the last 20 years, only on one occasion in that time did the pair miss a Rally of the Lakes. Among their many career highlights was winning the Southern Four Rally Championship in 2016. “Johnny has left us far too young and his going leaves a great void in the lives of those who knew and loved him,” said a motor club statement. “For Killarney and District Motor Club, a return to rallying without Johnny will be a much poorer place, where his knowledge, advice, contacts and incredible work ethic will be sorely missed and virtually impossible to replace.” When local rally driver Rob Duggan won the Young Rally Driver of Year Billy Coleman Award, Johnny looked after all his press and publicity work. Despite his own success in rallying, his proudest moment in the sport came when his two best friends, Rob Duggan and Colin O'Donoghue won the overall and modified section of the Killarney Historic Rally in 2019. His rally work was recognised nationally. Cartell.ie has been the long-time sponsor of The Rally of the Lakes and Johnny worked alongside senior management

of that company for years. “You couldn’t beat the motivation, dedication and commitment from Johnny for the Rally of the Lakes. Year after year he tirelessly put in the hours to ensure every part of his involvement of the rally was perfected,” Richard Lahiff, Head of Business Development at Cartell, said. “Many a late phone call was had to ensure this perfection and that Cartell as sponsors were happy with everything he done. A true gent and a great friend to me and all in Cartell.” He put so much time into the motor club, as press officer, event programme editor and countless hours behind the scenes it was hard to believe he had time for anything else. His first real passion was mountain biking and as a member of Killarney Cycling Club he was a former Junior National Champion. He passed on that interest to the next generation of mountain bikers in Killarney and was the driving force behind one of the club’s first mountain bike trails in Muckross. To this day it is known as ‘Hick’s Trail’ in honour of the amount of work he did at the time. “It is the first track that anyone starting out at mountain biking is brought on,” said a Killarney Cycling Club statement. “There is a lot of young kids owe it to Johnny for getting into mountain biking. As we in the cycling game say it has a little bit of everything and is very forgiving, just like the man himself.” He was also a willing volunteer with the Killarney Tidy Towns group and drove their road sweeper on many occasions. "His expertise at driving the mini-sweeper helped Killarney keep its clean and tidy image. Johnny's efforts put the finishing touches in keeping our town clean," a group spokesperson said.

FAMILY MAN

His number one priority was his childhood sweetheart and wife Jennifer and his children Alyson, Laura and Conor. Johnny and Jennifer were married in St

Mary’s Cathedral less than four years ago, the same church as his requiem Mass on Tuesday. When his two daughters wanted to get involved in their own choice of sport, it wasn’t enough for Johnny to merely sign them up. Instead, he invested in their passions as much as his own. He helped out with the Little Dribblers section of St Paul’s Basketball Club and the family are huge supporters of the club’s national league team. He got involved in Killarney Athletic FC and Legion GAA because that is the route his daughters followed. “Alyson and Laura are juvenile members of our club and Johnny would have been a great supporter up at Direen. We are deeply shocked at this news,” said Legion GAA. The arrival of Conor less than two years ago was a proud moment too.

WORKING LIFE

He worked for local businessman Con Duggan for over 20 years and in that time Johnny became Con’s right-hand man. “He was as good as a brother to me and almost a son,” said Con. “I depended on him night or day, he was a friend and a business partner, and he is going to be a huge loss.” Another great, but less known passion for Johnny was cookery; sharing recipes with his great friend Kevin O'Donoghue. Johnny is survived by his wife Jennifer, his children Alyson, Laura, Conor, his parents Charlie and Joan, sister Charlene, brothers Cathal and Stephen, father-in-law Dermot O’Connor, mother-in-law Marie, brothers-in-law, sistersin-law, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, relatives, neighbours, and a wide circle of friends. He was sadly predeceased by baby Jenelle.

Outdoor dining subject to competitive process | By Michelle Crean Kenmare Place was chosen as the most suitable location for the €200,000 Fáilte Ireland weatherproofing and outdoor dining scheme - as other locations in town didn't meet the full criteria – a special meeting of Killarney Municipal District has been told. Last Friday’s meeting followed a previous meeting by Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce. Chamber members called for more locations to be added to the scheme ahead of Friday’s meeting. Details of the scheme, the application process and the criteria set down by Fáilte Ireland was explained to Killarney Municipal District councillors at a twohour virtual meeting on Friday afternoon.

SUITABLE LOCATION

Other lanes and streets including Main Street, High Street, Plunkett Street, College Street, New Street, College Square, as well as Beech Road, Old Market Lane had been considered but didn't have everything needed for the application, Kerry County Council Executive Engineer, David Doyle, said during a presentation to elected members. "Kenmare Place is recommended as the most suitable location when assessed

in accordance with the criteria for this scheme and presents the best option for a successful bid," he said. He explained that the application "is a competitive bid process, with funding of up to €200,000 available, with the final decision being made by Fáilte Ireland". Each local authority is invited to submit two towns and for Kerry this includes Killarney and Dingle. The application must be imaginative and creative, cultural, the area must be permanently pedestrianised or partially pedestrianised with a variety of businesses such as restaurants, pubs, cafes etc., and the street zone should offer dining opportunities for lunchtime and evenings. "The proposed project(s) must maximise the opportunity to strengthen the cultural identity of the city/town area for tourism impact," added Doyle.

NOT GUARANTEED

Charlie O'Sullivan, Director of Services with KCC, said "we're not guaranteed funding at this time". "Hopefully we'll have a strong enough bid." Designs are currently being put together by an architect. With a deadline for the application at the end of May the project will not be ready for the summer tourist season. It's hoped that it will be up and running by November.

TOP TEN: Oran O'Donoghue was one of only two Irish apprentices to make the final of the Screwfix Trade Apprentice 2021 competition.

SUCCESS: Patrick O'Regan has won a prestigious University College Cork entrepreneur competition.

Local man’s sports business wins UCC’s competition | By Sean Moriarty Better known for his roles as the secretary of Spa GAA Club or as a player for St Paul’s Basketball Club, Killarney man Patrick O’Regan has been declared the winner of the IGNITE business start-up-competition organised by University College Cork. The Coolcorcoran man’s business startup project, entitled 'Reach The Top' will help ease the difficult process faced by National Collegiate Athletic Association in America that wish to recruit potential international basketball stars. While his online and cloud project is suitable for all sports and includes a secondary element where clubs can use software to analyse matches and player performances to get it off the ground, he will concentrate on US Basketball. “We are going to tog off here in Ireland and play ball in America,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. Collegiate basketball is big business in America with many colleges having multi-million dollar budgets.

Currently, US-based scouts would fly around the world looking for new talent. Aside from the expense of all of this there is an incredible amount of paperwork and administration involved. All of this is time consuming and expensive. Mr O’Regan’s platform aims to streamline this process and make the application easier for both the player and the university. He also hopes to put more potential players in front of colleges, which will reduce the current expense and allow colleges to vet more potential athletes. “We are doing all the pre-screening work for the colleges and on behalf of the athlete,” he added. “It will reduce the admin time significantly and reduce the costs for colleges who fly around the world looking for potential players. It will also help players from disadvantaged backgrounds get further up the ranks.” IGNITE nurtures start-ups from an idea to commercial reality and this is the 13th group of graduates to complete the programme. Seven entrepreneurs including Patrick have become the first founders to complete the IGNITE programme entirely online this year.

Glenflesk electrician reaches top 10 | By Sean Moriarty An apprentice electrician from Glenflesk was one of just two Irish apprentices to make the shortlist for the Screwfix Trade Apprentice 2021 competition. Oran O’Donoghue who works for Diar-

muid Cronin Electrical, the firm behind Killarney’s Christmas Lights, is one of only 10 apprentices across many trades from Ireland and Britain to have made the grand final which took place last Friday. While the Glenflesk man did not win the overall prize, he said he was happy to

make the top 10 and to represent Kerry in a competition that included apprentices in Ireland and Britain. “Coming away from it I was not disappointed that I did not win,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “I learnt a lot, there is a high-level in Ireland and UK and I was only one of two from Ireland

to make the top 10.” Oran (21) applied for the competition during lockdown and highlighted his drive to succeed, passion for renewable energy and interest in contributing to Ireland’s transition to a fully renewable energy power grid as reasons why he should earn his place in the final.

Build works for broadband network underway in Killarney Build works for a new high-speed fibre broadband network under the Government’s National Broadband Plan (NBP) are well underway with the first homes in Killarney expected to be connected before the end of this year. | By Michelle Crean Over 3,382 premises have been surveyed to date in the town and surrounds with network designs completed to deliver the new Fibre to the Home (FTTH) network in the area. NBI crews have started initial works for the build in townlands surrounding Killarney including Ardlaghas, Banard, Knockasarnet, Lahard, Lisroe, Muckross, Nunstown, Oldforge, Slievegaura, Toormore and Whitefield. These ‘make ready’ works pave the way for the next

stage of deploying fibre on poles/ducts, and include the erection of poles, unblocking of ducts, and the insertion of subduct into existing ducts, for the fibre to be installed. Additionally, the network build started in Tralee last month. In Kerry, there are 26,905 premises in the 'Intervention Area', which includes homes, farms, commercial businesses and schools. This equates to 30% of all premises in the county. Under the National Broadband Plan, Kerry will see an investment of €107m in the new highspeed fibre network. This will enable

e-learning, remote monitoring of livestock or equipment, e-health initiatives, better energy efficiency in the home, and more remote working. NBI chief executive Peter Hendrick said the company was pleased with the progress being made. “We started physical work on the ground in January 2020 and despite the challenging environment caused by COVID-19, we’ve grown and mobilised the team working on the project across all 26 counties and are making good progress. We are acutely aware that people

want access to high-speed broadband as soon as possible, and our goal is to deliver that. We are currently working closely with retail service providers, and other stakeholders, to connect the first homes in Killarney before the end of 2021. Minimum speeds of 500Mb will be available.” NBI’s website www.nbi.ie has a search tool to enable the public to check whether their premises is within the rollout area, and to show indicative dates for areas being surveyed.

MUSIC: Shane Kennedy from Farranfore has just released his latest single.

Creative student releases new music | By Michelle Crean A young Farranfore musician using COVID downtime to develop his music has just released his latest single 'It Is What It Is'. 21-year-old Shane Kennedy released 'Someday Soon' earlier this year and 'Your Shadow' last year. The former Presentation Milltown student is now in third year studying Creative Digital Media in Cork Institute of Technology, now known as the Munster Technological University. Shane started playing guitar when he was eight and picked up a few other instruments including drums bass and keyboard along the way. "I was gigging in the Fáilte and the Tatler Jack on Sunday nights before the pan-

demic occurred," he told the Killarney Advertiser. "Once lockdown began I started learning the ins and outs of recording at home. I also bought a lot of the necessary gear to get up and running throughout the first and second lockdowns. To be honest I’m still learning how to do all of it myself but it seems like live music won’t be back for a while so I’m going to keep at it." The dream, he explained, is to gain a bit of traction with his music. "Just trying to get my music heard is the primary focus at the moment. I released two singles on Spotify previously and a single on YouTube which I recorded in a studio nearly two years ago." To find out more about Shane's music check him out on Instagram: @shane_ kennedy4599 and Spotify: Shane Kennedy.

The group are concerned about the potential sale of the Beaufort Care Facility because of financial difficulties faced by site operator St John of God. The meeting, organised by Minister Foley, was attended by Minister of State at the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth with responsibility for Disability Anne Rabbitte and a number of her officials. This was the first opportunity for parents and guardians to put forward their views and concerns to Minister Rabbitte

regarding the future of St Mary of the Angels. The speakers asked for a guarantee that St Mary of the Angels and its land would remain in trust for the benefit of its residents. “One of the key points here is that St Mary of the Angels and its land was entrusted to the provider for the benefit of its residents and future residents," Minister Foley said. "It is important going forward that this remains the case and that the facility and its land will always be utilised for the benefit of its current and future residents.” They also asked to be included in the decision-making process and have a more active management role in the running of the facility.

Hoteliers call for detailed reopening roadmap Hotel and guesthouse owners are calling on the Government to provide a detailed reopening roadmap to give them an idea of what the reopening of the sector will look like. They are also seeking a commitment to specific measures and supports including inter-county travel that will enable businesses to plan effectively for a safe and sustainable reopening. “With June just over a month away, hotel bookings nationally are at a historic low, currently averaging only 22% for the key months of July and August," Bernadette Randles, Chair of the Kerry branch of the Irish Hotels Federation (IHF) said. "It is critical that the Government gives clarity to consumers and businesses as a matter of urgency. “We are asking the Government to outline a more detailed roadmap for reopening the hotels sector safely based on clear progress markers for restrictions to be eased in line with public health improvements. While we recognise the challenges around public health and suppressing COVID that it is facing, the ongoing lack of detail is jeopardising the viability of hotels and guesthouses as they grapple with the financial and operational commitments required to be ready to reopen after months of prolonged closure." She added that booking levels "have never been this low so close to the key summer months". "Unless this is turned around quickly there will be serious implications for the recovery of our sector here in Kerry and elsewhere that could take years to remedy.” The IHF is calling for the Government to commit to the following measures to enable hotels and guesthouses reopen

URGENT: Bernadette Randles, Chair of the Kerry branch of the Irish Hotels Federation, says that hoteliers and guesthouse owners urgently need a reopening plan from Government.

safely and sustainably: Inter-county travel to be permitted, hotels to be open to all patrons whether residents or not, capacity to be linked to function room size for events, outdoor capacity to be linked to space available, plans to be put in place for easing of restrictions for family gatherings such as weddings and christenings, EU Digital Green Certificate to be adopted and plans to be put in place for other vaccinated international travellers. “We also require a commitment on business and employment supports. While the supports to date have been very welcome, it is essential that the Government provides greater clarity and certainty now around supports into 2022 and beyond. Wait and see is not the approach for sustainable business planning and job recovery,” she said. "Public health remains our number one priority as we reopen society and the economy. Recovery of tourism and hospitality must be to the fore of Government economic policy as we seek to restore employment levels as quickly as possible."

Killarney’s cultural and sporting centre campaign goes national | By Sean Moriarty Ambitions to build a cultural and sporting centre in Killarney are gathering national attention. Cllr Michael Gleeson first proposed the idea around 10 years ago but it fell on deaf ears due to funding and other issues. He reignited the idea during January’s Killarney Municipal District meeting and since then the idea is gathering more momentum. Yesterday (Thursday) the local councillor gave a wide-ranging interview to RTÉ Radio One’s Today with Claire Byrne current affairs show which has a listenership of over 350,000 every day. “This was made possible by a researcher

on the programme called Barry Lenihan, a Dubliner with Scartaglin roots. He picked up on the story from local media reports,” Cllr Gleeson told the Killarney Advertiser. A few week’s ago Mr Gleeson featured on a sports programme that was broadcast on TG4 where he also highlighted the proposal to build a cultural and sporting centre in the town. Previously the Killarney committee behind the centre had costed the project at €3.5 million and had secured a free site on the grounds of Fitzgerald Stadium. At the time the committee had secured a €0.5 million bridging loan from the GAA in Dublin and planning permission was granted. It is not certain if that permit is still valid today.

Help make Kerry the cleanest county in Ireland This year's County Clean-Up takes place in May - but unlike previous years it won't be done in a single day. Due to the pandemic restrictions currently in place organisers have decided that the ninth County Clean-up will take

place from May 22 to 30. The county-wide community event takes place with the support of Kerry County Council and KWD Recycling and in previous years 5,000 volunteers gathered 6,500 bags of litter on a single day in their own localities that left the county looking spick and span.

Facilitated by KWD Recycling, this year’s campaign is your chance to join with your family group/pod to gather litter along your local roads and help make Kerry the cleanest county in Ireland. KWD Sales Reps are now busy organising County Clean-up packs in preparation for this event. Register your group with KWD

to arrange your pack and collection point for your bags. Volunteers can register for the County Clean-Up day at www.countycleanup. com or you can email KWD offices whose staff will be happy to help you out at countycleanup@kwd.ie.

The nine branches which make up Kerry Mental Health Association pursue befriending and support activities to enrich the lives of neighbours and friends in our communities who are living with mental health challenges. Fundraising and befriending activities were seriously curtailed by COVID-19

and the branches were unable to hold any annual church gate collections or flag day events for over a year. All proceeds raised will go towards supporting the promotional activities undertaken by Kerry Mental Health Association.

This week the two teams - Team Mario Cart and Team Vroom – took part in the competition’s national interviews

ahead of the grand finale which takes place late next month. “Our final interview was our verbal presentation, and while it was challenging, we were happy with our performance," Meadhbh Bennett of Team Mario Cart said. "The judges were lovely, and they seemed to be very impressed with all our information and our team engagement. The verbal presentation was worth high marks in this competition, so we were delighted, not only to have it done but that it went so well." The final stage of the competition will be the actual race itself, this year as the cars will be timed and recorded on YouTube ahead of the final results that will be broadcast on TG4 on May 23. “We are really looking forward to seeing our car in action on the track as we have put so much time and effort into it,” Meadhbh added.

Killarney Credit Union gives €3,000 to worthy local charities Killarney Credit Union has donated €3,000 to local charities following a staff and volunteer initiative undertaken in March. The idea for the challenge was floated by compliance manager Shane Foley to help promote fitness and wellness of mind and body particularly during the tough level five lockdown. And there was a great take up from both credit union staff and the Board of Directors. Whilst

considering the idea, the credit union felt that if they incentivised the idea by giving money to charity at the end, it would add greater motivation to their goal. The Board of Directors and staff collectively undertook the challenge by walking, jogging and running and are delight-

ed to say that they surpassed their initial three million metre target and completed 4.2 million metres in total in March - over 1 million metres per week - which was a great team effort! There was a great buzz in the office with some healthy competition between colleagues as to who did the longest distance, and most importantly it meant

that they were able to donate €500 to the Kerry Rape & Sexual Abuse Centre, MS South Kerry Branch, Recovery Haven, Kerry Mental Health Association, St Anne’s Community Hospital, Cahersiveen and Taobh Linn (Meals on Wheels) Kenmare. “This past 12 months has been hard on everyone and especially our local charities," Marketing Officer of Killarney Credit Union, Karena McCarthy, said. "Most of their usual fundraising incentives have had to be postponed so it is nice to be able to help them out in some small way. These charities, like ourselves, are community based and we all need to support each other.”

Draw date for 'Win a House in Killarney' | By Sean Moriarty One lucky punter will be the new owner of a Killarney house worth €350,000 before the end of weekend Ardfert Community Centre have been promoting its ‘Win A House In Killarney’ raffle since last July to raise funds to build a new community centre in the North Kerry village. COVID-19 restrictions prevented the draw going ahead on its original date of

March 17 but now as the 5k limit has been lifted, the organising committee has confirmed that the draw will take place tomorrow (Saturday). Entrants can watch the draw live from 1pm via the 'Win A House In Killarney' Facebook page. “Thanks again to everyone who purchased a ticket and, more importantly, best of luck to everyone,” said a committee statement. “We are looking forward to finding out who will win the house this May Bank Holiday weekend.”

Local groups to receive extra funding | By Sean Moriarty 10 community groups in the Killarney Municipal District will benefit from funding that has just been released by the Department of Rural and Community Development. The money comes from the second round of the COVID-19 Emergency Fund for community and voluntary groups badly impacted by the pandemic. Kerry County Council has been allocated a fund of €52,280 of which €6,496 will be distributed in the Killarney area. Rathmore Community Council will receive €1,560 while Social Action Group Rathmore is in line for €750. Kilcummin Rural Development has se-

cured €1,560, Ballydribeen Residents Association €886, and the KDYS will get €100.The majority of the groups will get €500 in much-needed funding. These include Barraduff Community Field Organisation, Killarney Men's Shed Killarney, Killarney Water Rescue and Muckross Community Association. “This funding will be very welcome for these community-based organisations as they have no means of fundraising during these difficult times,” Cllr Marie Moloney said. “As you will appreciate these organisations play a vital role in the community, none more evident than the role that Killarney Water Rescue played during the weekend assisting firefighters battle the blaze in our precious National Park.”

their true colours

Last week we spoke about compost for pots, this week we will take a look at something much more fun – the plants. Kerry GAA showed their true colColour is, to my mind, the most important thing. Plan your colours to suit your pots, mood and what you want to achieve. Calm colours are generally cool colours, mauves, blues and creams are restful and easy on the eye. They work well against a backdrop of greenery, and also in small spaces as they have the optical effect of retreating. Conversely, warm colours such as oranges and hot pinks are vibrant, lively and have the effect of coming forward. Cream or pale blue would be lost in a pot of oranges, on the other hand, an orange flowering plant can look crass in a pot full of lavanders. This might seem a bit basic, but colour is the main reason that pots don’t work! Greenery in pots is also important; a plant such as hosta, bamboo or ornamental grass can really set flowers apart. Features such as structural leaves – hosta, rodgersia, colocasia, caladium, melianthus or canna lillies, add an extra dimension to your display – sometimes, especially with flowers, less can be more. Softer foliage such as bamboo, ferns, Pennisetum or other grasses, really soften the effect of colour, as well as adding movement. Of course this applies to a border as well.

One of the most common questions I am asked is which plants will grow in the shade. There are a few which will perform well; begonias, both bedding and large types, busy lizzies, New Guinea busy lizzies, Lobelia and alyssum, ageratum, and fuchsias. Again, foliage works well, especially ferns, but variegated plants will often need sun to colour up well. When planting a 16” basket, I find five plants is enough, say one geranium in the middle, two surfinia to balance each other out on opposite sides, and another two basket plants, such as bidens, santolina, brachycome or trailing geraniums on the other two sides. A few trailing lobelia, and job done! Trailing geraniums are excellent as they do not go ‘sticky’, as surfinias can. One way to prevent this from happening is to feed your plants with an all round fertiliser such as Phostrogen, Miracle Grow or a liquid seaweed. This will make your plant a lot stronger, giving it a better chance at resisting any diseases and pests. Tomato food is popular, however it drives on flowers to the detriment of the plant itself making it prone to any adversity.

ours - by kindly donating a specially framed Kerry county jersey with a message of "thanks". Representatives of the teams of frontline healthcare workers at University Hospital Kerry (UHK), were delighted to accept a specially framed Kerry county jersey from Kerry GAA. In recognition of the tireless work by frontline staff, the presentation was

made by Kerry County Board Chairperson Tim Murphy. “Our frontline workers are the real heroes in this global pandemic and this is a wonderful way to acknowledge them," Mr Murphy said. The initiative to acknowledge the efforts of frontline workers has received a huge reaction and has already been picked up in all four provinces, following its launch by GAA radio commentator Tommy Devance in Galway.

Arthritis awareness campaign a huge success The Kerry Branch of Arthritis Ireland have this week said that they are indebted to Kerry County Council and the Blennerville Windmill Committee for highlighting their recent campaign. County Buildings, including Killarney Town Hall and Blennerville Windmill turned orange to highlight National Arthritis Week and in doing so helped to raise awareness of the affect the condition has on a patient's mental wellness. "Up until now consultants were only

concentrating on relieving the pain and physical symptoms associated with this incurable and progressive disease," Tom Barrett, Chairperson of the Kerry Branch of Arthritis Ireland said. "Thankfully this approach to treating and managing the condition is now starting to change and consultants are starting to look at a patient’s overall health and wellness as a whole. There were many informative presentations on the topic held over the week and all are available to view on the Kerry Branch of Arthritis Ireland’s Facebook page."

The four-day 'May the 4th Be with You' online celebration, features over one hundred fan made Star Wars films with over two hundred million YouTube hits and interviews with some of the directors from all over the world. The virtual festival, taking place from May 1 to May 4 this year, will host online chats with some of the stars from the Star Wars universe, explore the philosophy of Star Wars with Dr John Donaldson of Glasgow University, present lively panel discussions with the 501st Ireland Garrison and Rebel Legion on some of their incredible costumes and offer an online Star Wars Market hosted by Dublin City Comics. For junior Star Wars fans there will be online interactive sessions in coding, graphic design and animation with Designer Minds along with cosplay and art competitions. The Ultimate Star Wars Quiz will be held online with Big Screen quiz master Paul Redmond on May 4 with loads of great prizes and all proceeds going to The Irish Cancer Society. “This online festival is the place to celebrate May The 4th for Star Wars fans

ONLINE: This year's Star Wars Festival is going online.

around the world, this year," 501st Ireland Garrison member and festival organiser, Dave Byrne said. "We have a fantastic line up that really covers so much from the casually interested to the ultimate fan. There is something to be got from engaging with the online format and some of the fan made movies that will be shown during the programme of events are simply stunning works of film art.” The festival celebrates Star Wars and the links between Kerry and the re-

nowned movie franchise which began in Portmagee in 2014, has spanned some 2,000kms of the Wild Atlantic Way – from the south-western Skellig islands to Ireland’s most northerly point, Malin Head. The savage beauty of Skellig Michael was introduced to the world when Rey finally tracked down the long-lost Luke Skywalker in 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens'. New poll shows drop in Trump popularity It seems that Donald Trump’s political power is wilting faster than he anticipated. He has already hinted that he will run for President again in 2024, and has yet to publicaly acknowledge that he lost last November’s election. Devoid of social media platforms, his ability to get his messages

out to supporters has declined and a new poll by American TV network NBC suggests his days could be over. The poll asked several questions, but one key question was if Republican Party members were still in support of Trump. “It’s the first time since July 2019 when party supporters have outnumbered Trump supporters in

Kanye West's shoes sell for record $1.8m One super fan loves Kanye West so much that he broke the world record by buying a pair of the rapper's black leather sneakers. The size 12 first-generation prototype Yeezy’s runners worn by Kanye West during his 2008 performances of 'Hey Mama' and 'Stronger' at the Grammy Awards with Daft Punk - sold for an eye watering $1.8m - the highest publicly recorded price for a pair of shoes ever! Auction house Sotheby’s announced on Monday that they had sold the shoes which were designed by Kanye West and Mark Smith. RARES, a sneaker investment marketplace, picked up the shoes. The company lets buyers invest in expensive sneakers by buying and trading shares in them. The last shoes that sold for a huge amount were a pair of Michael Jordan’s 'Jordan 1s' which he wore during a pre-season game in 1985 when he shattered the backboard.

our poll,” said the ABC website. “But close to 100 days after leaving office, Trump’s standing - nationally as well as within his own party - is weaker today than it was three months ago.” His ratings among adults stands at 32 percent favourable, 55 percent unfavourable, which is down from his rating in January; 40 percent favourable, 53 percent unfavourable, according to NBC’s news website. By comparison, President Biden’s current favourable/unfavourable stands at 50 percent positive, 36 percent negative.

Ireland to offer assistance to COVID stricken India FSAI issues warning on sweets containing cannabis The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) issued a warning for consumers about the danger associated with eating edible products, such as jelly sweets, containing cannabis components. This warning comes following a number of recent incidents whereby edible products containing significant levels of the psychotropic cannabis component tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) were intercepted by An Garda Síochana and Revenue’s Customs Service. In at least one incident, sweets containing cannabis oil were consumed by a number of teenagers, one of whom subsequently suffered serious adverse health effects requiring hospitalisation. The particular sweets were apparently purchased online with the packaging carrying explicit warnings to eat the sweets cautiously and that a significant concentration of THC was present. THC is the psychotropic cannabinoid found in the cannabis plant that results in the euphoric high in people who consume it by smoking, vaping or eating. THC is a controlled substance in Ireland with no tolerance level set in the Misuse of Drugs Act, 1977. In food, THC is consid-

ered a contaminant, with no permitted threshold in the EU. The European Food Safety Authority has established an acute reference dose of 1g/kg body weight above which the safety of ingested THC cannot be guaranteed. According to Dr Pamela Byrne, Chief Executive, FSAI, THC is a toxic contaminant and should not be added to any food. “Sweets containing cannabis components are being sold online or by other means. They are dangerous, particularly for young people and those with prior health conditions who may consume them unwittingly. We are warning consumers about the dangers from eating these sweets with cannabis products added. People should only ever buy food from reputable sources and be sure they check the food labels. THC is not classified as food in the EU and is a controlled substance in Ireland,” warned Dr Byrne. “This new development is a sinister attempt to sell narcotics in the form of sweets and those involved are obviously not concerned about the consequences of these products getting into the hands of vulnerable people like children who could consume these products unwittingly to the detriment of their health.”

Wicklow publican named new VFI President Paul Moynihan is the new Vintners’ Federation of Ireland (VFI) President. Paul, who runs a family pub in rural Wicklow, takes over from outgoing President Padraic McGann, from Monivea, Co Galway. Paul was appointed President at the VFI AGM, which took place against the backdrop of the ongoing closure of the country’s pubs. Speaking to delegates gathered online, the new President said his only role in the short-term is to get pubs reopened. “I will do all in my power to fight for pubs to open together and be treated fairly," he said. "Pubs should be allowed open at the same time and with the same guide-

Ireland is to make an emergency donation of vital equipment which includes 700 oxygen concentrators as the country continues to battle through its devastating COVID crisis. Minister for Health, Stephen Donnelly TD, Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, Darragh O’Brien TD and Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney TD, along with the HSE and a number of State agencies have been working on a plan to offer assistance to India in response to the current severe COVID-19 outbreak there. The emergency donation is being made to India through the European Civil Protection Mechanism. Ireland’s contribution forms part of a coordinated EU response to provide rapid and tangible support and solidarity with India. The

donation is being made from stocks originally purchased by the HSE for use in a field hospital setting, as part of pandemic preparations. These devices draw oxygen from the air and deliver it to the patient at over 90% concentration. “We have all seen the rapidly deteriorating situation in relation to COVID-19 in India," Minister Donnelly said. "I am pleased that Ireland is in a position to make this emergency donation. These machines will support frontline healthcare workers in India to deliver care to patients who need it. I am grateful to all those who have been working together over the weekend to make this life-saving donation happen. Transportation is being arranged through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism along with the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage and the Department of Foreign Affairs through Irish Aid.”

Irish wildlife charity boss killed in ambush

The Irish director of a wildlife foundation and two Spanish journalists have been killed whilst working in Burkina Faso.

The crew are believed to have been working on a documentary about poachers in the West African area when they were attacked by unknown assailants on Monday. Irish citizen Rory Young was woking alongside David Beriáin (44), and Roberto Fraile (47) in a national park bordering Benin when they were attacked by gunmen, Spain’s Foreign Minister Arancha González Laya said Tuesday in a press conference in Madrid. According to media content producer Movistar Plus, Beriáin was conducting

early research for the documentary on how Burkina Faso’s authorities are tackling poaching, also focusing on the communities of people living in the park. Minister for Foreign Affairs, Simon Coveney expressed his sincere condolences to Rory Young’s family, and to the families of the two Spanish nationals who also lost their lives in this tragic incident. He said in a statement that he "condemns in the strongest possible terms the actions of those who are responsible for this attack"."We will continue to liaise with the authorities and partners on the ground on the matter." The Department of Foreign Affairs is in contact with the family of Mr Young and continues to provide all possible consular assistance.

PAYING RESPECT: Shane Doyle and Donagh Crowley from Headford pay their respects to Johnny Hickey. FRIENDS: Denis Hickey and Sean Nolan from Glenflesk, pay their respects to their friend Johnny Hickey.

Answering Johnny's final call

LONG TIME: Pat Sheehan gave the keys of his rally car to local legend Pat Murphy for the guard of honour. It was the first time that Pat had driven a rally car in over 30 years.

| Words and Photos by Sean Moriarty

In the weeks and days leading up to the Rally of the Lakes and the Killarney Historic Rally, competitors near and far could be sure of one thing - they would get phone call after phone call from Johnny Hickey cajoling them into entering his home events. Only a top-quality entry would do Johnny and he would stop at nothing to convince a driver to place their entry. More often than not he would be encouraging entries from drivers who he would have to compete against in the event, but that didn’t matter to Johnny. “The best of the best are coming,” he would say weeks before the event and long before the official entry list was published. He knew, even before the entries secretary knew, who was coming. He had spoken to the competitors himself and he had received the promises. And, if during the first phone call the driver’s excuse for not coming did not stack up, Johnny would be on the phone again and again until they eventually relented – sometimes even withdrawing from a previous commitment just because Johnny

was not going to take no or a lame excuse for an answer. So, it was fitting on Tuesday afternoon that drivers and co-drivers from all over the county gave Johnny the send-off he truly deserved. As Johnny made his way to his last time control, competitors lined the road from the top of Madam’s Hill to the entrance of Aghadoe Cemetery. Over 40 rally cars, from a state-of-the-art World Rally Car to entry-level junior Honda Civics, formed an automotive guard of honour to pay respects to a man that did so much for rallying in Kerry. He would have been proud of the topclass entry that he attracted. The best of the best came to see him on his final journey. They answered Johnny’s call.

GUARD OF HONOUR: Rally cars lined the road near Aghadoe Cemetery in an automotive guard of honour.

LAST JOURNEY: Johnny Hickey's cortege was lead by the famous Ford Escort that he and his father, Charlie, competed in together. The car was driven by one of Johnny's great friends, Colin O'Donoghue. Photo: Eamonn Keogh

What to invest in next EQUITIES

The most recent rise in interest rates has resulted in a further rotation out of some of last year's biggest winners into value and cyclical stocks - think airlines, big banks and energy stocks. While this is potentially just a short-term shift, it has helped reverse some of the growth out performance that has haunted value investors in recent years. The increase in interest rates has taken some of the air out of the most speculative areas of the stock market. Companies with a great story but no foreseeable earnings in the near term hold a more compelling narrative in environments where money is cheap but less so when interest rates move higher. Higher interest rates will also increase debt repayment at a time when corporate debt is at all-time highs, weighing on the margins of many of these growth names. Dividend stocks could also experience some substitution effect as interest rates run

higher. Investors may be looking to take some risk off the table and move into fixed income as the dividend earning yield narrows relative to bond yields. In my view, these rotations are a part of the normal market function and a positive development for the overall health of the market. Despite the recent run, the rotation into value still has room to run with sectors such as financials, industrials and energy likely to benefit as economic metrics continue to pick up.

BOND YIELDS

As mentioned previously, long-term Government bond yield movements have dominated financial news in recent times. In Q1, the 10-year US Treasury yield rose from 0.91% to as high as 1.74%, its highest level since early 2020. As inflation and economic growth picks up, the base case scenario will see bond yields tick slowly higher, creating unfor-

giving duration exposure for those holding traditional long-term Government bonds, essentially creating a 'return-free risk' environment.

MARKET OUTLOOK

The main pillars that drove markets to all-time highs throughout 2020 are still in place. Since then, markets have been boosted by further US fiscal stimulus, strong fourth-quarter earnings and upgrades to global growth forecasts. However, this year the stock market will face headwinds caused by the economic recovery, including higher interest rates, the possibility that the Fed may tighten earlier than expected, and the potential for higher taxes. Inflation will continue to be the focal point that dictates market movements from here, with volatile growth-based story stocks and some dividend names the most obvious causalities if a persistent inflation increase pushes yields high-

er over the medium term. Cyclical value looks likely to continue to outperform. The financial sector will reap the benefit of a steeper yield curve, creating a wider net interest margin for banks. Energy and commodities will likely benefit from supply-side contraction and an up-tick in inflation, while consumer discretionary should benefit from an inflationary boom cycle as the economy reopens and pent-up demand re-enters the market.

Health and Safety myths debunked Over the years I have encountered some common misconceptions about health and safety rules and regulations. Here are some of them: HEALTH AND SAFETY WILL COST ME MONEY Managing health and safety efficiently does not need to be expensive. Larger businesses may wish to contract a health and safety consultant but for the majority of small to medium sized enterprises a Health and Safety Statement and risk assessment can be drafted by the management team with the input of the employees. See www.besmart.ie for sector specific risk assessment tools. An up to date safety statement can be an invaluable tool in the event of a liability claim, so can actually save you money if used in the manner for which it was designed.

HEALTH AND SAFETY IS JUST RED TAPE A safe place of work should be par-

amount to all business owners for a myriad of reasons not least the risk of increased insurance costs following liability claims. According to the Health and Safety Authority 56 people were killed in Irish workplaces last year and many others suffered serious injuries. The business owners and managers need to place health and safety at the core of their culture. Red tape is usually defined as something unnecessary or overly complicated therefore the business should lead with a proactive common sense approach that serves the business.

MANUAL HANDLING TRAINING IS A WASTE OF TIME Manual handling training is not mandatory for all staff but does apply to a work activity that “by reason of its characteristics or of unfavourable ergonomic

conditions, involves risk, particularly of back injury to employees”. The training needs to be specific to the task involved of course and it’s not as simplistic as how to pick up a box. In a liability claims situation the evidence of manual handling training or lack thereof can be used by either side to demonstrate that the employee was or was not fully trained.

HEALTH AND SAFETY CAUSES EVENTS TO BE CANCELLED For any event or large scale movement of people the health and safety of the public is paramount. From GAA matches to regional parades and festivals there is a huge scale of work involved in getting these events planned safely. Sometimes when things do not go according to plan the scapegoat is invariably “health and safety concerns”. However, most reasonable people understand that health and safety regulations are not a reason to not do something. Risk cannot be removed from our daily

John Healy of Healy Insurances.

lives but we can manage risks. A proactive common sense approach with the necessary documents and training on file can assist a business to grow and thrive. Managing risks is likely to be topical in the coming weeks when we remove restrictions due to COVID-19. I will write a piece nearer to that time on the measures for businesses to reopen safely.

Agricultural land prices remained resilient last year The Society of Chartered Surveyors Ireland (SCSI) in association with Teagasc have produced their annual Agricultural Land Market Review and outlook report for 2021. Agricultural land prices remained resilient last year despite the threat posed by COVID-19 and are predicted to rise by 4% on average this year, underpinned by a rise in farm incomes as well as

strong demand and reduced supply. Restrictions on viewings due to lockdown led to a decrease in the volume of sales, as prospective sellers opted to defer their plans to sell. Nationally the price for non-residential land ranged from an average of €5,900 per acre for poor quality land to €9,381 per acre for good quality. The highest prices achieved were in Leinster, ranging from €13,600 per acre for good quality land (less than 50 acres) in Kildare to €7,900 per acre in Longford. In Munster, with dairy farming driving the market, prices ranged from an average of €11,900 per acre in Tipperary to €9,000 per acre in Clare while prices for poorer quality land ranged from €6,500

per acre in Waterford to €4,700 per acre in Clare. The inability to view holdings or conduct physical auctions led to a significant increase in the number of sellers postponing plans to sell land, and over a third of agents reported a decrease in the volume of land sales in 2020. Virtual viewings, highly successful in the residential sales market, have been available, but clearly many have a preference for more traditional auction and private treaty sales. In Kerry the average price for non-residential land ranged from €5,500 per acre (poor quality land <50 acres) to €9,594 per acre (good quality land <50 acres). With restrictions on the industry pre-

Detoxing and restoring the skin Drinking loads of water is a crucial part of detoxifying the skin. First, water helps flush toxins from the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, which hastens the elimination of harmful chemicals. Second, consuming at least eight glasses of water per day prevents dryness, scaling and peeling of the skin. Our skin absorbs pretty much anything, including toxins which come from a number of sources, but the environment is the primary culprit of exposure. Remember to always wear SPF. Skin toxins include: chemicals in water and make-up, poor dietary habits, and hormonal disorders. Detoxing your skin will lead to a number of benefits. First, it enables the skin to perform its three primary functions that keep us safe. Second, detoxing will give the skin a much cleaner, healthier appearance – and you’ll feel much better as a result. Using the correct cleanser twice a day and exfoliator twice a week are steps in the right direction. Sothys have just launched the best cleanser I have ever used, their new Glysalac Cleanser, with glycolic and salicylic acid. The acid micro-exfoliates and clears pores, and assists in rejuvenation of premature ageing of the skin by resurfacing and restoring radiance. Eating healthy is absolutely crucial for a

successful skin detox. Cut all fast foods, junk foods, processed foods, and fried foods from your diet. Stay away or cut down from beef and pork, and opt for chicken or fatty fish, like salmon and tuna, instead. Include as many fresh fruits and veggies in your diet as possible. Nuts, beans, and whole wheat grains are also healthy additions. Try to eat tonnes of anti-ageing foods such as avocados, broccoli, blueberries, melon, pineapple, spinach, tomatoes, sweet potatoes, salmon, mushrooms, porridge, honey and Greek yogurt. Sothys Detox Resurfacing Overnight Cream is a fantastic tool to fight against toxins while we sleep to deliver a power punch of active ingredients. It has a beautiful fresh formulation with mandarin essence to suit all skin types. It contains high potency of Vitamin C to increase luminosity, oxygenation and collagen production while managing skin with hyper pigmentation issues. Night after night this concentration of technology with a pleasant fragrance acts deep inside the skin to help it erase the visible signs of daytime damage caused by the environment.

CAO Change of Mind opens on May 5 Almost 73,000 made applications to CAO by February 1 this year - and if you haven’t done so and want to apply there is still time. Late Applications close on May 1 at 5.15pm. On May 5 at 12pm the CAO Change of Mind facility will open to allow students to make changes to course choices. This can be done up to July 1 at 5.15pm. You can make changes on both lists – Level 8 and Level 7/6. The two lists are completely separate in your application. You can take out, add in or change the order of the courses. Some restrictions do apply, for example it is not permitted to add in any ‘Restricted’ courses at this stage. If you do not wish to change your courses you don’t need to do anything, the original course choices will remain unchanged. There is no charge for the Change of Mind facility and if you make a change online, an acknowledgement is sent to the email address used at the application stage. You can also log on to www.cao.ie/ myapplication to check it at any time. A video guide to the Change of Mind can be found on www.cao.ie.

REVISIT YOUR CHOICES

Lots of you were under pressure and unsure of choices ahead of the February 1 deadline so it is really important to revisit your CAO choices at this stage and well in advance of July 1 deadline, after which no changes can be made. Any changes you make at this stage cancel and supersede all previous course choices and whatever choices and/or changes you have made by July 1 are final. Whatever courses you have included at that stage, in whatever order you have listed them, is what CAO will work with when they get access to your Leaving Cert results, usually in mid-August. It is important to take note of the following: • Always place your courses in order of preference – not in the order of the points. Remember you will not know the points for 2021 until the day that the first round offers are issued, usually shortly after the Leaving Cert results come out. • Check the Alert Lists for the various colleges on www.cao.ie to check if any new courses are now available that might interest you. Such courses may not have been included in the CAO booklet at the beginning of the school year.

Niamh Dwyer is a Guidance Counsellor in Scoil Phobail Sliabh Luachra, Rathmore, and Chairperson of the Kerry Branch of Guidance Counsellors. She is also a Career Consultant. For details see www.mycareerplan.ie or follow MyCareerPlan on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter.

• Fill up all 20 choices if possible (10 Level 8 and 10 Level 7/6) as this gives you the best option of getting a course somewhere, even if it is not in your top choices. • Research all courses that you put on the CAO thoroughly; entry requirements, course content, work placement, career options etc. • Check your emails as you will receive confirmation of your new course choices. If there are any errors or omissions contact the CAO office immediately as it will be too late to do anything about them at a later stage. Remember, CAO is not the only option. There are hundreds of excellent courses in colleges of Further Education which allow you to progress through the CAO system onto Higher Education once completed. Check out www.fetchcourses.ie, and at a local level check out www.kerrycollege.ie and www.kerryetb.ie. Apprenticeship options are also expanding all the time, check out www. apprenticeship.ie.

NEWS BRIEFS... Problematic mid-Kerry water main to be tackled Repair works on the water main that feeds many of the mid-Kerry areas that suffer burst pipes are to be carried out before the end of this year. Irish Water has confirmed that it will replace 1.2km of mains along the Board of Works road that runs between Beaufort and Glencar. This pipe feeds the Barleymount and the Lahard reservoir and supplies the vast hinterland of Beaufort, Faha, Listry, Rockfield, Aghadoe, Barleymount, Crohane, to Ballyhar. “I want to welcome this vitally important funding,” said Killarney Mayor Brendan Cronin. “Water mains have been continuously breaking leaving homes repeatedly without water which is very frustrating. Last weekend there were five breaks on this section in three days alone.” Kerry County Council said the works are confirmed for completion in the current year.

HEALTH & FITNESS Advice - By Brian Foley Brian is available for advice and fitness consultations, Call 087 403 0894 or email info@activate.ie • www.activate.ie

Build your fitness confidence and skills In 1898, psychologist Norman Triplett observed people completing tasks alone or in a group setting. He found that when a cyclist had a pacemaker he went faster. People work faster in competition is hardly an earth shattering revelation now is it, but the research of over 120 years ago, still relates to your health and fitness today. This psychological study is called social facilitation, whereby people show an increased level of effort as a result of the presence of others. Like many studies in psychology however, Triplett’s work raised more questions than it answered. There was another side to the coin, called 'Social Loafing' whereby a person may exert less effort to achieve a goal when they work on a goal than when working alone. So what has any of this got to do with my health and fitness? Upon more detailed reading of these studies and subsequent work in the field of sport psychology, your current level of fitness and belief system around exercise may influence which of these phenomenon occurs for you. So how do we know what would work best for you? Working in a group has many benefits if you harness the power of social facilitation:

MOTIVATION:

Coaches and peers can offer much needed motivation, camaraderie and encouragement.

COMMITMENT:

Your chances of skipping a session decrease when you are held accountable by a greater number of people.

CHALLENGE:

If you are socially facilitated, the sight of someone next to you working hard might spur you on to hit one more rep.

BEING PART OF SOMETHING GREATER:

Having others in the same boat as you, on your team as it were, being led by an expert coach can heighten the whole experience and lessen the intimidation factor.

FRIENDSHIPS:

Can extend well beyond the gym walls. We see this at Activate so often, with so many new friendships, relationships and even new babies on the way as a result of meeting in the gym!

FITNESS IS SOCIAL:

Having a group make fitness fun for many and becomes a hugely important aspect of your social life. However, an expert coach can spot when facilitation might not be on the cards and that loafing might occur, then working exclusively one to one might be best. Loafing might hinder your results if it is not recognised. We ensure this doesn’t become a blockade to reaching your goals at Activate in the following ways: An initial sit down consult to see where you are at in your journey and to prescribe what the best course of action is for you. Everyone starts with some one to one coaching first to ascertain what will work best for you longer term. The psychologists who came after Triplett figured out that 'Loafing' can occur where a lack of confidence and skill are present. So merely throwing you head first into a group setting is really setting you up for long term failure. The best solution for you, from both a psychological and physiological standpoint, is to build your confidence and skill (skill can be simply executing and understanding the exercise asked of you). That way you can bridge the gap between facilitation and loafing and figure out what style of training suits you best. So next time you think of signing up for just a 'class', maybe it would be best to speak to a professional about what might get you to your goals in a more sustainable way. Not everyone is the same, nor is everyone’s mindset or goals. At Activate, we don’t sell classes - we sell coaching which is more than teaching, more than cheerleading, more than dictating. We don’t merely provide access to equipment, but deliver people from their current state to their goals.

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS

Eligibility for the School Transport Scheme Question: My daughter is starting secondary school in September and we live five kilometres from her school. Am I eligible for the School Transport Scheme? ANSWER: You may qualify for the School Transport Scheme. The scheme provides subsidised school transport for both post-primary and primary pupils. Bus Éireann runs the school bus service and the Department of Education decides the annual fares. The service is only provided where there are at least 10 eligible pupils in a distinct locality that can be economically serviced by a bus route. Even when a pupil meets the age and distance criteria for school transport, there is no legal entitlement to it. Your daughter is eligible for the Post-Primary School Transport Scheme if she is attending her nearest school and lives 4.8 kilometres or more from the school. The Department and Bus Éireann determine the appropriate nearest school with regard to ethos and language. Parents must arrange to bring their child to the nearest pick-up point on the bus route. Generally, bus routes

are organised so that no pupil has more than 3.2 kilometres to travel to a pickup point. There is a single annual charge of €350 per pupil. However, a family does not pay more than €650 per year. In 2021, the charge is due to be paid in full by the end of July or else in two instalments: by the end of July and by November 26. Pupils who are eligible for school transport and who hold a valid medical card are entitled to free school transport to the nearest school. Since your child is enrolling in post-primary school for the first time, you should either apply for school transport online or download the form on Bus Éireann’s website. Applications are now being accepted for the 2021-2022 school year. Applications for the school transport scheme 2021-2022 close today (Friday, April 30). You can read more about the School Transport Scheme on citizensinformation.ie.

We wouldn't change a thing Couple enjoy relaxed intimate wedding

WEDDING OF THE WEEK

WEDDING

After 11 years together - and third time lucky trying to secure a wedding date due to COVID lockdowns and restrictions - one couple are ecstatic that they finally got their "not so big" day out. It may not have been the huge wedding that they had originally dreamed of but for Ciara O'Connor and Padraig Brennan Saturday's intimate ceremony and reception was "just perfect". Ciara, from Scartaglen, is daughter of Marie and Seamus O'Connor, and Padraig from Ballinhassig in Cork, is son of Peter and Bernie Brennan. They were married by Fr Larry Kelly in Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Scartaglen followed by a beautiful intimate reception at Churchtown House in Beaufort. And everything on the day went off without so much as hiccup, Ciara told the Killarney Advertiser. "The whole thing was just so personal and about us," she said. "I wouldn't change a thing." With current restrictions it meant the original big wedding couldn't take place but Ciara explained that extended family, neighbours and friends more than made up for it with their socially distanced presence on the way to the church and outside afterwards. From tans and make-up to church music and the vows - almost everything had a family connection. Fr Larry, who married Ciara's parents 31 years ago, is also her dad's first cousin. Ciara's sister Áine O'Connor is a beautician and helped with nails, make-up and the all important tans! And Ciara's sister Orla not only took on a role of bridesmaid but sang Ciara up the aisle and joined with family friends Julianne O'Connor and Ben Cully for the

church music during the ceremony. Not stopping there, Ciara's talented mom then sang the reflection 'On Your Wedding Day' by Jimmy Buckley. Afterwards the couple, along with the bridal party, which included Maid of Honour Áine and Padraig's brother David, enjoyed time with local photographers Ian Cronin and Riona MacMonagle, and Jackie and Lucas from LM Wedding Videography to capture special moments from the day. Then it was off to Churchtown House in Beaufort for a small celebration. "It was our third time securing a date," Ciara explained. "We had booked June 12 last year and then February 12. Paudie plays GAA and hurling and it originally would have been a big wedding. But everything happens for a reason. I wouldn't have had it any other way. Churchtown House was excellent and the food was out of this world. We'd beautiful flowers from Enchanted Flowers in Macroom. I wanted lots of beautiful flowers for the church as it'd be empty with a smaller crowd. I don't regret anything at all and please god we can have a good gathering for family and friends when it is safe to do so." The couple, who had to postpone their honeymoon to Sri Lanka and the Maldives, will settle down to married life in Kilbrittain where they have built a house. For now the senior infants teacher in Scoil Naomh Eltin in Kinsale and her husband who works in Glasslyn Vets, are enjoying some time off and are planning a staycation in Ireland later in the year when restrictions allow. "We want to thank everyone, all our immediate family and friends for all their support and well wishes. Everybody made such a huge effort and they did make the day really special for us."

We appreciate all those that sent condolences by way of Mass cards, sympathy cards, letters and the many telephone calls. Our thanks to those that lined the route as the funeral cortège made its way to her Funeral Mass. In loving memory of Brendan Cronin Mangerton Rd, Muckross, Killarney who died on the 2nd May 2019

You gave us years of happiness Then sorrow came is tears You left us lovely memories We will treasure through the years

When great trees fall, Rocks on distant hills shudder, lions hunker down in tall grasses and even elephants Lumber after safety.

You never failed to do your best Your heart was true and tender You worked for those you loved And those you loved remember. We wont forget the face we loved Or the memory of your smile Or the countless things you did for us To make our lives worthwhile. A treasured Dad, a special friend A loving Grandad to the very end. From his loving wife Gobnait, son Daniel, daughter-in-law Claire, daughter Nora, son-in-law Damien, son Liam, daughter-inlaw Anne-Marie. Sadly missed and always remembered by extended family and your grandchildren lily & Katy, Michaela & Isabelle, and Ava

When great souls die and our reality, bound to them, takes leave of us. Our souls, dependent upon their nurture, now shrink, wizened. Our minds, formed and informed by their radiance, fall away. And when great souls die, after a period peace blossoms, slowly and always irregularly. Spaces fill with a kind of soothing electric vibration. Our senses, restored, never to be the same ,whisper to us. They existed. They existed. We can be. Be and be better. For they existed!

Say St. Gobnait’s Prayer for him.

NOVENA TO THE SACRED HEART

Dear Heart of Jesus in the past I have asked for many favours. This time I ask you this special one, (mention favour). Take it dear heart of Jesus and place it within your heart where your Father sees it. Then in his merciful eyes it will become your favour not mine. Amen. Say this prayer three times for three days and your favour will be granted. Never known to fail. Must promise publication of prayer. FM

Say this prayer three times for three days and your favour will be granted. Never known to fail. Must promise publication of prayer. MM

O Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal. You gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances of my life you are with me. I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things you have given me as you confirm once again that I never wanted to be separated from you in spite of all material illusions. I wish to be with you in Eternal Glory. Thank you for mercy towards me and mine. This prayer must be said for three days, after three days the favour will be granted. FM

We beseech Thee, O Lord, to grant us the pardon of our sins by the intercession of Saint, virgin and martyr, who was always pleasing in thy sight by her eminent chastity and by the profession of every virtue. Amen. Illustrious virgin and Martyr, Saint Philomena, behold me prostrate before the throne whereupon it has pleased the Most Holy Trinity to place thee. Full of confidence in thy protection, I entreat thee to intercede for me with God, from the heights of Heaven deign to cast a glance upon thy humble client! Spouse of Christ, sustain me in suffering, fortify me in temptation, protect me in the dangers surrounding me, and in particular (Here specify your petition). Above all, assist me at the hour of my death. Saint Philomena, powerful with God, pray for us. Amen. O God, Most Holy Trinity, we thank Thee for the graces Thou didst bestow upon the Blessed Virgin Mary, and upon Thy handmaid Philomena, through whose intercession we implore Thy Mercy. Amen. FM

NOVENA TO ST. THERESE O little St. Theresa of the Child Jesus, who during your short life on earth became a mirror of angelic purity, of love strong as death, and of wholehearted abandonment to God, now that you rejoice in the reward of your virtues, cast a glance of pity on me as I leave all things in your hands. Make my troubles your own- speak a word for me to our Lady Immaculate, whose flower of special love you were to that Queen of Heaven “who smiled on you at the dawn of your life”. Beg her as the Queen of the heart of Jesus to obtain for me by her powerful intersession, the grace I yearn for so ardently at this Novena, and that she join with it a blessing that may strengthen me during life. Defend me at the hour of death, and lead me straight on to a happy eternity. Amen. FM

COMMENT

FAI’s silence over alleged COVID breach is worrying

Killarney Advertiser Sports Editor Adam Moynihan addresses the alleged COVID breach at last year’s Kerry District League final and the FAI investigation that followed In September of last year, the FAI launched an investigation into allegations of a serious breach of COVID-19 restrictions at a soccer match in Kerry. The complaint centred around a league final between Killarney Celtic and Killarney Athletic, a fixture that was supposed to be played behind closed doors in line with COVID guidelines at the time. It had been claimed that upwards of 180 people attended the game in Tralee, and that an admission fee was charged at the gate. As far as supposed breaches go, this was a big one. Did you hear what came of that investigation? Me either. There was no public statement, no fallout, no news whatsoever. Apart from the initial coverage when

the investigation was confirmed, it’s like the whole thing never happened. At this point you might well say, “Hang on, isn’t that your job?” That is a very fair observation to make. Here’s why I haven’t written about the topic in six months.

SILENCE

FAI Communications Director Cathal Dervan gave me a comment for a piece I wrote on September 15, two days after the story broke via Paul Rowan and Mark Tighe in the Sunday Times. But subsequent requests for information fell on deaf ears. I asked for an update on the investigation in October and again in November but heard nothing back. Without an official line there wasn’t much I could do with the story, so it was shelved. Naturally, as the weeks turned into months, I assumed that no action had been taken against the Kerry District League or its secretary, John O’Regan –

if it had then it would surely have come out – but beyond that I was completely in the dark. At the beginning of April, with the Dublin footballers’ high-profile COVID breach making front page news, I decided to try the FAI one more time. After all (on paper at least) the alleged breach in Tralee was potentially more serious as it involved far more people. The matter may have been resolved behind closed doors but as far as I (and this publication) was concerned, it was still very much unresolved. My question was straightforward and, I think, fairly reasonable: what came of the investigation? Again, I received no response. Attempts to get a comment from the CEO, Jonathan Hill, and the chairman, Roy Barrett, also proved fruitless this past week. The latter left me on read. They are busy men, I have no doubt about that, but to contact the FAI five times over a six-month period and still get no reply is

disheartening to say the least. As I was reaching out to these two senior officials, I also decided to talk to James McCarthy, the referee’s assessor who brought the alleged breach to the attention of the FAI in the first place. Speaking with McCarthy allowed me to fill in one or two of the blanks.

TIGHE AND ROWAN

McCarthy explained how he submitted a complaint on September 9, three days after the match, but it took further emails and follow-ups with various officials before the FAI responded. The Association launched an investigation and this was noted by Rowan and Tighe in the Sunday Times on September 13. I interviewed John O’Regan for this paper and, in a story published online on September 15, he asserted that “no guidelines were broken” by the Kerry District League. When I put it to him that there

57

30.4.2021 were people there who shouldn’t have been (remember, I was playing in the match in question), he accepted that, but he also claimed that some spectators may have snuck in using alternative entry points. “There was a few there alright but I can’t do anything about what’s passing up and down. We don’t have the luxury of having everything walled in like Fitzgerald Stadium or Austin Stack Park. They can come in through Tralee Dynamos’ pitch – now, I don’t know whether they did or not [for this match] – and, unfortunately, on the left-hand-side there’s a walkway and people can come from the middle of Tralee or Caherslee. “Maybe a few people got in that way. There are a few gaps all over the place.” He also refuted the allegation that he had charged an admission fee, saying that the money taken from those who did come in via the main gate was for charity. “We weren’t allowed to charge but we were collecting for the Red Cross. And what we were asking people to do was to make a donation. Anybody who wanted to donate to the Red Cross was allowed to do so. And people did donate generously. “Next Thursday night we’ll be presenting the Red Cross with a cheque for €1,000 that we collected at the game. But there was no charge as such.” This rightly led some observers to question how €1,000 was collected at the front gate if an appreciable number of spectators had hopped the wall, so to speak. O’Regan also claimed at the time that there is a “personal vendetta” against him, which he said stems from his ongoing friendship with disgraced former FAI chief John Delaney. On November 25, McCarthy received an official document via email from the FAI. “We refer to your complaint in respect of the Kerry District League. Please note that the Independent FAI Disciplinary Committee have dealt with

Is it not fair for the media, or any stakeholders for that matter, to ask questions about an incident such as this? the matter.” The document, which was signed by the ‘Disciplinary Control Unit’, was vague, but the implication was that nothing had come of the investigation. For his part, McCarthy is still unhappy with the outcome. He wants to know who was on the committee that carried out the investigation, and he feels as though the KDL and its secretary should have been punished. “I wouldn’t give a damn if they only slapped them across the hand or fined the league €100. But [the FAI] should have definitely taken some action.” The Limerick man believes that the incident has been brushed under the carpet. Asked to sum up the saga, including the FAI’s handling of the investigation, McCarthy simply calls it “a disgrace”.

CLOSED

It’s not my intention to cause trouble for the league or for John O’Regan by revisiting this episode at this juncture. McCarthy made his complaint, O’Regan stated his case (in these pages and presumably to the FAI) and the FAI reached its judgement. In that sense, the matter is closed. My biggest concern now is that I’m seeing a lack of transparency and accountability, which is precisely what brought

the ‘Old FAI’ to its knees. And this isn’t ancient history we’re talking about. This was two years ago. Lessons were supposed to have been learned. Is it not fair for the media, or any stakeholders for that matter, to ask questions about an incident such as this? Simple queries like how long did the investi-

gation take? Who was involved? What were the findings? More to the point, are questions like these going to be answered in the future? What worries me is that, in this instance at least, the ‘New FAI’ looks an awful lot like the old one.

Kids make long-awaited return to sport

BACK AT IT: Firies U11 boys awaiting instructions during their first training session back after the latest COVID-19 lockdown. Pic: Firies Gaa

Eamonn Fitzgerald offers some sage advice to the youth of Killarney as GAA academies resume after a lengthy lockdown They’ll be up tomorrow morning waiting for the day when they can join their friends in the academies of the local GAA clubs, learning the skills of hurling, football, camogie, and doing it all with their friends. It has been a long time for young boys and girls of primary school ages to be denied access to the playing pitches, not just in Killarney and surrounding districts but nationwide, as the government ruled it out based on

the health advice from NPHET. While I agree with the government’s reluctance to give permission to the sports clubs to re-open, I believe that it has been far too conservative a timeline. These young sports-children have been meeting up in big class groups indoors at school since Easter and now they will be operating in smaller pods in the wide expanses of the local GAA pitches and elsewhere.

Neither can it come half soon enough for parents, often demented by their children, who are so full of energy that modern technology will only partly suffice.

PREPARATION

The clubs have been very busy preparing for tomorrow’s return to play, particularly the workers in the juvenile sections of the clubs. There is an awful lot of red tape involved in following the protocols so

that everyone is safe and endless paper trails to be followed; registering, checking in, sanitising, and getting into pods before the coaches take over. They too have been active during lockdown, mainly through Zoom or Team meetings, completing courses on safeguarding with children and updating their garda vetting status. Parents or guardians must also play their parts, ensuring their children have individual water bottles with

59

30.4.2021 names on them, and while COVID protocols sstill in place make the trip to your local club pitch with the mantra of ‘Arrive, Drop, Go and Return to collect’. It all seems very onerous, but it will work out and everyone will return home safely. What no one wants is opening up and then lockdown once more.

FIRST DAY OF SUMMER

Tomorrow, May 1, is the first day of summer 2021 and best of luck to all those young boys and girls who can’t wait to run on those green fields. For a very small number, it may well be the first steps on the road to glory to wear the coveted green and gold of Kerry. For the majority, it will be the opportunity to sample the games on offer, learn the skills and have fun. Some will progress through the juvenile ranks and go on to spend the best years of their lives proud to represent their clubs at senior level. Others may sample the GAA, but find out it is not for them and that is perfectly alright too. They may like other sports in Killarney, in other codes and clubs that are well organised and have proud traditions. I think of rowing, Killarney’s oldest sport, soccer, basketball and many more. My heart goes out to the latter. As I outlined in this column some months ago there is a great tradition and success of basketball in Killarney. The local clubs cater for so many young people and crucially it serves males and females. As a sport played indoors for the most part, they have a low priority in the eyes of the government in the roll-out of opening up the country. Basketball and several other indoor sports could go ahead quite safely now, following the guidelines. Juvenile academies start tomorrow, but already in action since Monday last are outdoor sports for people up to the age of 18 and for adults tennis and golf, which also got the go-ahead.

SCARAVEEN

The sun is streaming down today as this column goes to print and that splendid good weather spell has been with us for the past 11 days. However, one swallow never made a summer yet, even the few that have returned to Killarney within the past few weeks, but I am mindful of Scaraveen. ‘Scara-what?’ you may well ask. Many readers may not have heard of that term, but the farmers are mindful by nature and are their own forecasters, ever before the meteorologists inform us on radio or TV. Scaraveen runs from mid-April to midMay and is an Anglicised term for Garbh Shíon (rough weather), or, to give it its full title, Scaradh Shíon na gCuach meaning the rough weather of the cuckoos. The cuckoo winters in sub-Saharan

Africa and returns to Europe in early spring. She is a solitary bird, more often heard than seen. The familiar "cuck-oo cuck-oo" call heralds late spring/early summer, when the cuckoo returns to Killarney. The cuckoo is a parasite, living off the state as it were, but in this case living off of nature. She lays her eggs in the nests of small songbirds with precision timing. Once hatched, the cuckoo chicks eject the true occupants and are then fed by the unsuspecting foster-parents. The cuckoo chick is already a true master of deception. Folklore has it that Scaraveen is nature's way of exacting retribution on the cuckoo for the havoc she causes in the bird world and that is no piseóg. From about April 15 to May 15, mild spring weather has been known to revert to cold, wet miserable weather, which is more typical of winter. Unfortunately, we all pay the price for the cuckoo's misdeeds. I wonder if any of our readers heard as yet the 2021 ‘cuck-oo’ call in the Killarney area. I must check out the first call of the cuckoo in 2021 with Killarney’s great environmentalists, who are always out and about: Peter O’Toole and Risteárd Clancy. It was a much-prized claim to fame in our early days in the Old Mon to claim to have heard the cuckoo in The Demesne, Ballycasheen, Woodlawn, or wherever. How do such connections stray into the stream of consciousness advising

parents and young children about the opening up of the academies tomorrow? In years past academies did not exist in Killarney, but with the lengthening hours of daylight and the long evenings of mid-April onwards, the outdoor games got underway in Killarney, the Half Moon, the Cricket Field, Fossa, Spa, Firies, Glenflesk and elsewhere. I was fortunate to be a son of a father who encouraged me to go kick a ball with my friends, but there was always one proviso, a nugget of ageless wisdom. Be sure to wear two geansaís and a woolly cap in Scaraveen weather. During Scaraveen you can get the 4 seasons in the one day, rain, storm, hailstone, snow and a false sunshine. He was a wise man, a man for all seasons and all weathers.

SNOW-CAPPED MOUNTAINS

I well remember the snow-capped Carrantuohill in late April, enticing such great landscape photographers such as Valerie O’Sullivan to capture it all for the newspapers. Nowadays she doesn’t even have to do the long early morning trekking. Drone photography provides the technology, but her trained eagle eye is still necessary to capture that magical unseasonal majestic miracle of nature. And so it will be for the young ones tomorrow, come hell or high water, they won’t mind the Scaraveen weather. All

they want is to run out on the verdant green grass of their local pitches and have fun with their friends. Children are great imitators and the good coaches will know tomorrow that showing the skills in a fun way to the eager boys and girls in the company of their friends will prepare them well for life. That will be a life of respect for all, encapsulating diversity and inclusivity. Even if you cannot get the hang of cutting the sliotar from the side-line, dribbling around several players like Messi, or perfecting the punt kick that you had practised endlessly against the back-garden wall during lockdowns, the academies will demonstrate for you the way to shimmy your way to future success, whatever obstacles life puts in your way. Have fun and hopefully tomorrow the sun will shine brightly.

SCARRED

We are halfways through Scaraveen, mostly sunshine filled, so there must be rain, cold and wind on the way, or even a sprinkling of snow on the mountains. Maybe not such a bad idea to hide the shame and the anger one felt last weekend, when fire, whether started deliberately or accidentally, scarred our beautiful mountains, not to mind the incineration of too many little creatures. Mindfulness? No. More like needless mindlessness.

MATCH-WINNER: Ex-Celtic man Matt Keane celebrates Treaty United's victory over Cork City. Pic: Joe Buckley.

Keane the hero as Treaty down Cork

He may have just arrived on the scene but former Killarney Celtic player Matt Keane is already making a name for himself in the League of Ireland. The hard-working midfielder popped up with a 78th-minute winner for his new club Treaty United as they defeated Munster rivals Cork City 2-1 at the Markets Field. Keane’s header led to boisterous cele-

brations as the Limerick side maintained their unbeaten record in the First Division. The newly-formed club have now won two and drawn three of their first five matches, a record which leaves them in fourth place ahead of tonight’s clash with second-place Shelbourne. Speaking to his club’s social media after the match, Keane said he was “ecstatic” to grab the goal that secured the victory. “The main thing is that we got the three points but I’m absolutely delighted to get

the winner, especially in a Munster derby. “I think we should have had two more wins on the board before this one (Treaty drew with Cobh and Galway in their previous fixtures), but we’ll take what we have. We got five points out of those games and we’re still unbeaten.” Keane has been an ever-present since joining from Celtic and he admitted that manager Tommy Barrett “took a chance” on him by launching him straight into the team.

“I’ve been playing Kerry District League for the last five or six years. Any time I get on the pitch, I’m just trying to repay the faith the manager has put in me. Hope-

fully, if I can get goals like that, I’ll keep repaying that faith.” Treaty United are currently seeking annual player sponsorship. To sponsor Matt for the season, find the ClubForce link on the club’s social media platforms.

RETURN TO ROWING: This week was a special one across the country as outdoor sporting activity resumed at clubs which have been closed since the end of December last. At the Muckross shore, we were delighted to welcome junior members back to limited group training and see several adult members taking the opportunity to get back out on the water in singles. A very welcome return to rowing and hopefully the beginning of a return to more normal times. A special word of thanks to our committee members and coaches who have been busy behind the scenes in recent weeks preparing for a safe return.
