RIVALRY: Dubliner Paddy Osborne and his Kerry born wife Liz are supporting their native counties while their 17-year-old twins David (Dublin) and Rebecca (Kerry) are also on opposite sides. Picture: Eamonn Keogh

Family rivalry tested to its football limit Husband against wife, sister against brother, son against mother, daughter against father. | By Sean Moriarty Sounds like an incredibly complex plot in an American soap opera - but this is exactly the dilemma facing one Killarney family this weekend. The Osborne household in Muckross is

divided in two ahead of Sunday’s All-Ireland football final between Kerry and Dublin. Dubliner Paddy Osborne and his Kerry born wife Liz are supporting their native counties while their 17-year-old twins Da-

vid (Dublin) and Rebecca (Kerry) are also on opposite sides. The couple, who met while Liz was working as a nurse in Dublin, have another son who plays soccer for Cobh Ramblers. Their situation is further complicated as Paddy, who is originally from Cabra, is a long-time member of Killarney Legion. “There is a good buzz in our house,” Paddy told the Killarney Advertiser.

“But I must be the only Dub that does not think this is a foregone conclusion. I see too much local football. I was there (in Croke Park) in 2009 when Kerry hammered Dublin and that was supposed to our year and the game was over in 10 minutes. I would be wary of these young Kerry teams – look at 1975.” Paddy and his family are travelling to the match on Saturday and are looking forward to the pre-match banter on Sunday morning. “We just love football,” he added. “I will meet a lot of Kerry people I know in Dublin and it will be good craic. I don’t mind who wins it as long as it’s a good game and not won or lost by someone’s mistake. We have lots of Legion players on the team. I know James O’Donoghue’s father Diarmuid very well. Robert played alongside David Clifford in The Sem before he followed the soccer path, so I know David very well too.” Shrewd management is key according to Paddy. “Jim Gavin is the most important man for Dublin, even looking back to Heffo’s day, he is another Micko,” he said. “I know Peter Keane too, he managed the Legion senior team for a while and if I know Peter he will launch a curveball.”

€150,000 fund set up for brave cancer tot | By Michelle Crean A little girl, whose mom is from Killorglin, is fighting for her life as she battles a very rare neuroblastoma and faces an uncertain future. Family of Chloe Jenkins set up a GoFundMe page: ‘Chloe’s Journey’ to help raise €150,000 for her ongoing care. Since it was created eight days ago, it has already raised almost €9,000 through the kindness of over 200 donations from the public. Footballer Kieran Donaghy has also rowed in on the campaign by featuring in an online video made by relative Brendan Reidy from Killorglin to promote the fundraiser. Chloe, only child of Deborah O’Connor from Mount Lyne and Dubliner Gareth Jenkins, was diagnosed with the very rare cancer on March 17, aged just 14 months-old. Now five months on, the brave tot, who has endured six rounds

of chemotherapy so far, continues to fight every day. However, as the tumour is located in her abdomen and wrapped ‘like ivy’ around vital organs, it’s putting pressure on her left kidney which is only functioning at 14 percent resulting in high blood pressure and putting strain on her heart. And although the tumour is shrinking, it is not pulling back from vital organs and major blood vessels. Chloe might soon need a massive operation and her family are preparing for news that they may need to travel to Germany for proton therapy, a specific form of radiotherapy. “It’s been a tough five-and-a-half months. It’s unimaginable,” her devastated mom Deborah told the Killarney Advertiser this week. “She’s tough, it takes an awful lot to take her down. I’m hoping she’ll keep fighting back. We just have to take it week by week. You have good weeks and bad weeks and there’s days if you

stop and think, it’s hard. Hopefully we’ll get through it.” She added that setting up the page is not only to raise funds but also to raise awareness of the cancer, she explained. “It isn’t a very common cancer, it’s a hard one to catch. Lily-Mae Morrison, otherwise known as ‘Tiny Dancer’ had the same condition as Chloe.” Family, in a bid to do something to help, set up the GoFundMe to help take the financial pressure off of both Deborah and Gareth while they spend precious time with their daughter. “I don’t like asking for help, but we still have to plan for what Chloe might need. All we can do is deal with the cards we are dealt and do our best for her. Our families have been a great help to us. There’s no Government help for parents going through this, you’re relying on charity. Anything that would be raised and not used we’d donate to charities we’ve used such as Aoibheann’s Pink

Fundraisers planned to get Sully home Loved ones of John 'Sully’ O'Sullivan, who became very ill 11 months ago, are planning a number of fundraisers to bring him home. | By Michelle Crean RELIEF: Konrad Paprocki, a photographer living in Killarney, had his stolen camera gear returned this week. Photo: Michelle Crean

Stolen equipment returned to local photographer It’s every photographer’s worst nightmare – having valuable gear stolen – but local Killarney photographer, Konrad Paprocki, was this week relieved to have his items returned to him by Gardai | By Michelle Crean Konrad, who is well known in the town and beyond for his photographic work – was in a state of disbelief when Gardai contacted him to say they had found his camera, a Nikon Z6 worth €2,500 and a brand new Gimble worth €700. They had been stolen from his car overnight when a number of vehicles were targeted in Muckross Mews in Cahernane Meadows, the weekend before last. A large quantity of power tools and other electronic items were also stolen and have since been recovered. And with a memory card still inside the camera from a wedding Konrad had shot just hours earlier, he wasn’t hopeful to ever see the images again. He explained that he and a friend had headed into the house to do some work in the office and left the camera and other equipment in the locked car. And after forgetting about them he headed to bed around 5am only to be woken

to flashing lights by his car. However, as the car alarm didn’t activate and when he peered out and saw nothing suspicious – he headed back to bed. The following morning around 8am he went to the car only to find a window smashed and the equipment gone as well as his wallet. “The camera was on the passenger seat and the wallet was beside it,” Konrad told the Killarney Advertiser. “Four cars were robbed that night.” However, he said he knew the couple’s photos were safe as it’s not the only camera he used on the day. “Only 10 percent of the images were on the camera,” he said. “I’ve learnt my lesson. Never leave anything in the car. I never thought it was going to happen to me.” A person has been arrested in relation to these incidents and further arrests are anticipated as Killarney and Dingle Gardaí continue their investigations.

The Killarney man is hoping that once changes are made to convert parts of the family home, he can leave hospital and focus on his future recovery. Next Saturday (September 7), Sully’s wife Michelle and daughter Emma, will join family members in the Curious Cat Café in New Market Lane (at the back of Quills), for a fundraising coffee morning – and all are invited to support their fundraising efforts, from 10am to 12.30pm. Sully (53) was rushed from University Hospital Kerry (UHK) to the Mater Hospital, Dublin, after becoming seriously ill with sepsis last October. He was then transferred to Dun Laoighre and months later back to UHK, where he is currently staying. However, it’s been a long road for the much loved local mechanic from Wood-

lawn who is still recovering. His family hope that by getting him home and surrounding him with family will perk him up and aid his recovery time. Funds raised will also contribute to his care, relative Kathleen McCarthy told the Killarney Advertiser. “We’re fundraising for an extension for a downstairs bedroom for when he’s ready to come home and towards his future healthcare.” His cousin Tracy Lyne added that although Sully is getting better he has a way to go – but is keeping them all smiling. “For what he has gone through, he’s a trouper. Sully is handling it very well. The sooner the extension is done then he can come home.” Other upcoming fundraisers include Pitch & Putt in September and a quiz in November, details of which are currently being finalised.

Last stop for local shop | By Michelle Crean The coffee shop at the Outlet Centre is soon to see some changes after 20 years – as Mary Sheehan is closing the doors to her cafe. Paul McAuliffe, Lord Mayor of Dublin City Council

Niall Kelleher, Mayor of Kerry

Politicians pen hilarious football letters | By Michelle Crean

Football fever has reached political levels this week – with two hilarious official Council headed letters littered with plenty of banter and craic - between two high profile Mayors. Mayor of Kerry Niall Kelleher penned a letter in response to Paul McAuliffe, Lord Mayor of Dublin City Council, who is a Kerry descendent – after receiving an invitation to stay in the Mansion House this weekend. However, it was the content of the Dublin letter, with plenty references to 5-in-arow, which sparked a funny reaction. ‘Dear Niall, There i5 5ure to be plenty of banter between your kingdom and my city ahead of the Men5 All Ireland Football Final. But banter a5ide we are a city of welcome5 and It would be my plea5ure to have you and your wife 5tay a5 our gue5t5 in the Man5ion Hou5e that weekend.’ And after signing off adding in another cheeky reference ‘p.s. 5orry about all the typo5’. Cllr Kelleher’s response was also just as witty: ‘We would be delighted to accept your invitation. If you don’t mind, we’d like a street facing room to look out at our favourite 37 – the bar across from your house on Dawson Street. I just hope they didn’t name it after the number of times Sam has come to Kerry or else they’ll have to change the name shortly. Some who won’t have to change their names are the fine Dublin players with good Kerry family titles. Like O’Sullivan, O’Carroll, some half of the Brogans and indeed your own McAuliffe is straight from our ancient winning land.’ He continued ‘I look forward to returning your invite. You can get to Kerry easily, just follow Sam down the road when he’s travelling home. He knows the way fierce well, having been down here 37 times, in case I haven’t mentioned it.’ And signing off he added, ‘Niall Kelleher, Mayor of Kerry, The Kingdom of Ireland, 37 times over’. “It was a good bit of banter and craic,” Niall told the Killarney Advertiser this week. “I’m doing a number of events with him between Saturday and Sunday and we’ll do more of it. It’s all about the hype. People are delighted to be in an All-Ireland

final. It’s a fantastic achievement for the squad and Peter Keane in his first year.” And he added that everyone has confidence in their ability. “They have what it takes to beat the Dublin side. The biggest thing now is to encourage the Kerry people to get behind the team.” He said the letters were a great talking point over the weekend and he’s looking forward to Sunday’s result. “I’m looking forward to welcoming back Sam number 38 to the Kingdom!”

Mary has been at the forefront of ‘The Coffee Bus’ since September 1, 1999. However, she’s decided it’s time to do something new and will close the doors for good on September 30. “I’ll miss the customers but I won’t miss the place,” Mary told the Killarney Advertiser. "There’s been a lot of changes over the last two years so it’s time to say goodbye.” Over the years hundreds of young staff

secured summer jobs with Mary. “It was very much a community based business with a huge age profile. I made great friends. It’s like a drop in centre and no matter what we tried to help as best we could.” Since she’s been telling her customers about her move she said she’s received positive feedback. “I didn’t realise people valued it so much,” she said. “On the whole everyone was nice. I always enjoyed it and always got up in the morning and looked forward to going in.” However, she said she’s not ready to park the bus for good just yet. “I’m not ready to retire yet. I’m keeping an open mind.”

Final Tidy Towns clean up a success Monday night was the 19th and final Tidy Towns Clean Up for this year’s campaign. The offer of pizza and refreshment sponsored by Killarney Brewery brought out 50 volunteers, the local group’s largest turn out. Muckross Road from The Golden Gates to Hegarty’s shop was the focus on the night, explained Johnny McGuire. “All footpaths were brushed and cleaned, over 25 bags of dirt and litter were collected,” he said.

“All grass verges were edged and cleaned. Weeds and briers were cut back on vacant site next to Old Weir B&B. Once again, great work was done by all the volunteers and the food and refreshments was greatly appreciated by all the volunteers.” The group were very appreciative of the Killarney Brewery, Kerry Drains, Easi Clean and Killarney Municipal, he added.

Many talented local photographers are ‘snap happy’ as they prepare for their annual show of work in Killarney town next week. | By Michelle Crean Members of the Killarney Camera Club, which has been in existence for over 20 years, will display their latest landscapes, portraits, black and white and abstract work in Killarney Library. The opening night takes place on Thursday, September 5, at 6.30pm with tea/ coffee and treats, and the exhibition will run until the end of the month. “We’ll have around 20 pieces on display for the exhibition,” Nikki told the Killarney Advertiser. “There’s actually quite a good range.” Currently there’s up to 40 club members who meet every second Thursday in the Killarney Heights Hotel. The group enjoy

days out together or with other clubs, have guests speakers in twice a year and enter their talented work into competitions. “Everybody enjoys the competitions as it helps to improve their skills.” And new members are welcome to join when the club starts back on September 12 – even if you’ve no experience - you just have to have enthusiasm, a digital camera of some sort and a keen eye. They’re also planning an open evening on September 26 at the hotel where last year’s club ‘Photographer of the Year’ John Keane will give a talk. Celebrations for centenarian | By Sean Moriarty

CRASH: Another crash occurred at the Lewis Road Junction on Tuesday evening between a car and a motorcyclist. Photo: Michelle Crean

Another accident at nightmare junction Locals voiced their concerns after yet another accident this week between the Lewis Road Junction onto the bypass. | By Michelle Crean On Tuesday evening, at approximately 6pm, a car and a motorcyclist collided when one vehicle exited right from the junction. The Killarney Advertiser took photos at the scene of the crash, which was attended by local Gardai, and it sparked a huge reaction on our Facebook page - reaching over 15,000 people, with 35 shares and 51 comments as locals voiced their concerns that something urgent needs to be done before a fatality occurs. In June, newly elected Killarney councillors vowed to keep the pressure on central Government in an effort to get the much needed northern relief road into construction phase – which could take up to seven or more years to complete. The junction has been the scene of several fatal accidents in recent years and plans for its realignment are seen as a major priority in Killarney by both residents and politicians alike.

In May, the Killarney Advertiser ran a story showing an artist’s impression of what the new road layout and adjacent community area will look like. The plans show a new pedestrian underbridge linking Bridgefield housing estate to a new recreation area which will be constructed in the cut-off lands between the existing and new Kilcummin roads. However, concerns remain that a fatal accident could occur at the junction before works begin. Mayor of Kerry, Cllr Niall Kelleher, told the Killarney Advertiser this week that he will press the Council to get planned works started as soon as possible, in two phases if possible, to prevent further similar accidents. “What I’ll be asking the Council to do now is to do the work in two stages, to implement a left hand turn only, particularly do the work required from the Lewis Road Junction to Cleeny, and whatever work needs to be done. The sooner this is done the better.”

The county’s latest centenarian, Lewis Road resident John Coffey, was surrounded by family and friends from all over Ireland, Australia and America who gathered for an enormous party in Killarney Golf and Fishing Club, to celebrate his 100 birthday on Saturday. Over 200 family members and friends attended the party where members of the Killarney Golf and Fishing Club’s male choir provided the entertainment. “It was great that he was able to catch up and reminisce about old times,” his daughter Mary O’Rourke told the Killarney Advertiser. “He sang with the choir, ‘Goodbye from the Musical White Horse Inn’, a song he would have performed when he was involved in the ‘Tops of the Town’. He felt the whole night was an affirmation of his life. He gave a great speech, it lasted 13 minutes, and he had no problem facing the 200 audience.” Neighbours and friends organised a Mass for him at Dr Crokes Clubhouse on Monday – the day of his actual birthday.

“Inaction is not an option at this stage” | Opinion By Rory O’Brien They say the definition of insanity is repeatedly doing the same thing but expecting a different outcome. Well in the case of the Lewis Road junction and the Killarney bypass, that insanity manifests itself in the lack of any intervention to the current traffic flow, expecting the regular accidents to stop. There are now regular accidents at this junction, ranging from minor to loss of life. But still, our esteemed elected officials

deem changes only worthy of press releases, but no actual changes to the status quo. And so, the driving public toss the dice and take their chances. Throw into this organised chaos of traffic policy, tourists in rental cars, already driving on what is for them the wrong side of the road, and you have a scene usually found at Birds Bizarre. But alas, the implications of collision does not end in a laugh and scream of excitement. The reality of two vehicles colliding is a terrifying ordeal leading to trauma, injury and shock. The dogs in the street know that this junction is an accident waiting to happen, although that wait

Mayor of Killarney, Cllr Michael Gleeson, also presented the President’s cheque to him. “That was a very proud moment for him,” Mary added. “Michael Gleason spoke in a very personal way on how he first met my father around Beaufort. He had two great loyalties, Dr Crokes and Beaufort GAA, and it was a source of great pride for him that both teams won All-Ireland finals in recent years.” Over €4,000 euros was raised for his chosen charity Down Syndrome Kerry and the Killarney Cardiac Response Unit.

can be only a week or two-long. It's a regular occurrence, and that's only counting actual collisions. I personally have witnessed three near misses, and not two weeks ago, wrote my car off into the side of a rental BMW. Having admitted responsibility for the accident, the driver said he thought he had right of way. In fairness, there are no roadside instructions to the contrary. We shook hands, exchanged details and laughed nervously at the outcome. He had his wife and son in the car, and I should have had my daughter in the passenger seat. She went to pick-up last-minute bits and pieces for her immi-

nent start to Fifth Year instead. The passenger side took the majority of the impact! The possible outcomes don't bear thinking about - but thinking is what I have been doing. And so, what is the answer? The only definite answer is that inaction is not an option at this stage. Make Lewis Road left turn only, put up accident black spot signs, reduce the speed limit to 20kph, erect yield signs for the bypass to Lewis Road, put up enlarged photos of previous crashes, hire a clown holding a poster saying, 'slow down or die'. From sensible to surreal, the options are there. I can't say for sure what would work. I can say for sure that doing nothing is insanity.

VIEWS NEWS “Social media ain't the golf club locker room” ON

THE

x

It's a case of Hy-Brasil - that mythical mid-Atlantic island normally cloaked in mist - in more ways than one this past week. From Brazil's Jair Bolsonaro to Ballyheigue's John Brassil, what might be termed “locker room talk” has had something of an airing. Except of course these light-hearted comments about legendary sexual prowess with women are not confined to the locker room when they are posted on public Facebook pages and then shared and spread with great glee by political opponents and journalists. That's the thing about social media platforms like Facebook - it ain't the golf club locker room, nor is it a blown up comment made in the fog of alcohol and left to evaporate in the corner of the bar with nobody much remembering the remark. The Brazilian one is easier to fathom than the Brassil one. Bolsonaro is typical of a certain type of boorish male which is not extinct, and is unfortunately unaffected by climate change, no matter how much we wish it or how many trees are cut to make way for cows. A Bolsonaro supporter posted an unflattering picture of Brigitte Macron alongside Bolsonaro's more buxom and much younger wife on the Brazilian President's Facebook page - and the President responded by saying not to humiliate the poor French President! Ha ha ha! Macron has been taking him on over

burning the lungs of the world - the Amazon rainforest. So Bolsonaro has an axe to grind as it were. John Brassil's comment - his picture was alongside it - was more general and revolved around an alleged "savage" liking for women by a high enough profile figure and he has apologised and taken back the comment and vows never to repeat it. The subject of the comment is bewildering as John Brassil does not know him from Adam, apparently. They do not socialise together and it is highly unlikely they have ever met! Bizarre is the word used by some people close to the man. The post was quickly removed. I heard a few scenarios; that someone else posted it, that it was meant as a bit of banter among a few "lads" and was publicised inadvertently because the wrong button was pressed on FB so that sent it public rather than on a group message, or that it was a genuine error and was never meant to go public. But the point is that it should never have been said in the first place. We will never know the exact scenario because John Brassil - who not so long ago took issue with me, within an hour of publication of this column on a Friday for not recognising his ministerial potential and his ability to take the hard decision after a remark that

A big loss for local politics News that Cllr Toireasa Ferris is to give up politics for now will perhaps not cause as much shock as her decision in June to not contest the General Election - in which she was almost guaranteed to win her father’s Dáil seat. It has caused a huge headache for Sinn Fein, I have no doubt. Her decision to vacate her recently won seat on Kerry County Council will not cause the same kind of consternation for the party. It will be readily filled and will likely

see a return to politics by Cathal Foley. But the real losers will be Kerry County Council politics, not Sinn Fein. She has been on the Council since August 2003, and in that time has matured into one of the more formidable voices, regularly pinning management to the mast. It takes years to get to this point as a councillor, just as it takes years to hone a journalist, a teacher, a farmer or a shop assistant. One of the big losses to the County Council some years back was Paul O’Donoghue. Again, he had become a

he was not a strong candidate in the Killarney area - is not answering phone calls from the press. Different people were minding his mobile phone when I tried to reach him for a response in the days immediately after all this blew up. Other journalists have had similar experience. But apparently he did respond last weekend to a hand delivered solicitor’s letter from the high profile solicitor, Killarney's own Padraig O'Connell, who was instructed to act by the extremely upset high profile subject at the centre of the post. John Brassil is a very high principled man and is not shy about expressing his opinions about issues from ProLife, fellow politicians, planning etc. And there is much to admire in him and in some of his strong positions. And he is not shy about contacting the press or responding to their calls. And nor should he be working as he is in the public arena. But what is to be made of his political judgement over the past two weeks in seemingly running away from the kind of remark you might hear in the corner of a bar but that has gone public from his social media page and been hugely upsetting for the victim? Is having to be flushed out by a solicitor days afterwards to apologise, a display of ministerial decisiveness? Well, we can only speculate, and until he explains himself we won't know, will we? master of eliciting information with the lob of a simple question, and a few senior officials did not like him at all and have told me he was “difficult”. Generally it is a good sign of a politician if they are not flavour of the month with management, and means they are doing their jobs. The problem with many long term councillors is they get too cosy with management and are too much on the side of the officials. I think the solution for local politics, especially for women in politics, is two terms in - one term out - and some kind of advantage given, in terms say of having to reach a lower quota, when they want to return.

No more blue skies of France We are sick of Brexit and wish it would roll on, but I have some pity for the 150,000 or so Brits living in France. Many are now in their 70s and older, and are looking at the prospect of having to up sticks and move back to grey, drizzly and over-crowded England - swapping the charm of old stone and the sweet smell of the French countryside for a flat in Hull. They will no longer be able to afford the blue skies of France. They are already having to apply for residency permits, and are being stopped at border posts. And I don't see anyone offering much to help. They are largely relying on each other and word of mouth. There is a rush for the Channel, not unlike Dunkirk. Estate agents are being swamped with property in parts of France. Sterling is almost at parity and they were used to getting €1.35 for every pound of their pension. Not only that, but the healthcare they have long enjoyed will now have to be paid for as they age. I have seen predictions that from all over the EU around a quarter of UK pensioners living abroad will be returning to Blighty. Apart from the personal tragedy of it all, what will it mean for the British healthcare system or the Irish if they move over here where the deal is better? Already Brexit has pushed property prices up in Dublin and Amsterdam because so many financial companies are relocating. What I can’t fathom though is a good many flag waving Brits abroad actually voted to leave, which makes the fallout for them a real tragedy.

There were big smiles but also some huge tears from young scholars as little ones began their school journey this week.

For some, the first day was on Wednesday morning, while others began their school journey yesterday (Thursday). Coolick National School in Kilcummin welcomed their first Junior Infants in the door on Wednesday, with twins Jamie and Caoimhe Scanlon (5), joining the class. Both were all smiles and even gave the thumbs up as they enjoyed their new experience. Teacher Fiona O'Donoghue soon settled all 12 and new friendships were formed. On Thursday, Junior Infants had mixed

emotions as they entered the doors of Holy Cross Mercy on New Road. While most settled in very quickly there was a few tears as parents headed out the door. “It was an exciting day for the Junior Infants,” Principal of Holy Cross Mercy School, Ursula Coffey, told the Killarney Advertiser. “They’re so open and full of energy and most settled well because they’ve been used to preschool, but there’s always a few tears.” And she added that she saw a few familiar faces come through the doors for the first day of school. “I had moms that I taught myself bringing their children in.”

Fun at Killarney Races There was plenty of fun and smiles as young and old enjoyed the family fun day at the races on Friday evening. The Animal Road Show was on hand

with plenty of animals including snakes, tortoises, guinea pigs and others to keep the children entertained, giving parents a chance to check the form at the popular race meeting.

Visitors enchanted by stunning birds

On Sunday a falconry display was held at the courtyard of Ross Castle as part of a programme of national events for Heritage Week. Liam Regan from Falconry Kerry brought a hawk, a peregrine falcon and some beautiful tawny owls to enchant almost 300 visitors over the one and a half hours. “Seeing the falcon swooping from the turrets brought us all back to a time when the O’Donoghue Chieftains might have been partaking in that very same pastime,” Majella Starrett, Head Guide of Ross Castle, said. “There were a lot of enquiries about this event during the week and it is an area with great potential, though the local duck population were not too impressed.”

The fine weather encouraged a great turnout. Members of the public were given a chance to interact with the magnificent birds as well as learn amazing facts about them from Liam and also Dan Loughlin. It was a wonderful opportunity for adults and children alike to get close to birds normally only seen on wildlife documentaries, she added. Falconry Kerry can arrange hawk walks and opportunities to free-fly and meet and hold birds for private groups. Please email falconrykerry@gmail.com or call 087 127 9745 to pre-book.

Kerry have spirit but all the odds favour Dublin It’s a dream final: Kerry versus Dublin, the Culchies versus the Jackeens, with Dublin bidding to make history with a five-in-arow, which has never been achieved. | By Eamonn Fitzgerald

“It doesn’t get much better than a Dublin and Kerry final” Dub Paul supporting home county He may be living and working in Killarney for the last 20 years but Manager of the Killarney Outlet Centre, Paul Sherry, remains a true blue Dub! Originally from Drumcondra, a stone’s throw from Croke Park, he will definitely be supporting his home county this Sunday. And to add to the fun - the Kerry GAA merchandise store is based in the Outlet Centre – with the build-up to the big occasion more intense here than other locations in the county. “The banter around town is great,” he said. “Expectations are high and Kerry

have a big job to do. I supported Kerry all the way up to the semi-final. I was even at the Kerry-Mayo game but now that it is the final, I have to support my home county. I really hope they can do it, and make history with the five-in-a-row. This Kerry team are young enough and will have plenty of chances in the future and their days will come.” Still without a ticket, despite his extensive contact list in both counties, Paul says he will watch the game on the big screen in the INEC on Sunday - if he fails to get one. “This is a big occasion,” he added. “It doesn’t get much better than a Dublin and Kerry final and there is going to be a

Kerry came closest in 1982 when a late Séamus Darby goal denied them the honour they deserved. The recent semi-finals played out the same pattern. Dublin played second fiddle to Mayo in that first half but really came to life after half time when Con O’Callaghan rattled in two goals even though he was marked by Lee Keegan, Mayo’s best defender. Dublin took over completely then and won with plenty to spare. In the Kerry game Tyrone were masters in the first half and had a good lead at half time. Kerry woke up in the second half and a Stephen O’Brien goal sent them to victory. Dublin are hot favourites to win the fivein-a-row with a very strong team and mighty back-up. The subs are the vital cogs in the modern game and Dublin are streets ahead of every other team in this respect. What a bench in Cormac Costello, Cian O’Sullivan, Paddy Andrews, Johnny Small, Philly McMahon and Diarmuid Connolly. These would be starting on any other county team. Kerry’s bench is not as strong. In Stephen Cluxton they have the most experienced goalkeeper who is renowned for the accuracy of his kickouts, always getting his man. The matchups are very interesting. I

expect Jonny Cooper to pick up David Clifford with Davy Byrne slotting in at full back. Seán O’Shea is a vital man for Kerry scoring both from placed balls and from general play. He will come up against the bang in form James McCarthy and it is asking a lot of the Kenmare man to win this battle. Who will Kerry play alongside David Moran? Jack Barry may get the nod even though he has played very little football due to injury. However, he has done well on Brian Fenton in the past, so I expect to see him in the action at some stage. Brian Fenton is a vital cog in the Dublin machine and is a great man to crash through for a goal. Dublin have a very potent full forward line in Paul Mannion, Con O’Callaghan and Ciarán Kilkenny so Jason Foley, Tadhg Morley and Tom O’Sullivan will have a busy time keeping tabs on this trio. Kerry showed great heart in spirit in the semi-final and we hope to see that shining through again on Sunday. All the odds favour a Dublin win and everything has to go right for this young Kerry team. I do give them a sporting chance. Remember 1975 and Mick Dwyer’s Young guns surprising Dublin! However, the verdict goes to Dublin and it would not surprise me if they went on to win six or seven-in-a-row. They’ll earn the five-in-a-row against Peter Keane’s young guns on Sunday.

HEALTH & FITNESS Advice - By Tara Tangney Tara is available for advice and fitness consultations, Call 087 403 0894 or email info@activate.ie • www.activate.ie

What to expect with postpartum exercise Getting back into exercise after pregnancy is a different process for every person. Once you feel you are ready, with clearance from your doctor, please remember to pay attention to your body and take each day one day at a time. Here’s a few factors you may need to take into consideration as you start exercising again:

TIME

Getting back to your full strength before you became pregnant will take time. It is usually advised that you wait six weeks to return to full exercise. This is very dependent on your body, how you gave birth and how quickly you recover. I would recommend you begin with basic breathing/core exercises and pelvic floor exercises as soon as you can. This will help to give you that kick start so you can return to exercise asap.

BALANCE

When you become pregnant, your centre of gravity shifts. After giving birth, you will have lost a lot of weight quickly and now your body will need time to adjust to these changes. Incorporating some balance work like lunges will be of great benefit to you.

INTENSITY

You will need to train at a lower intensity and slowly increase your pace over time as you recover. In general, at the start of your journey back into exercise, you should be able to hold a conversation while working out. It should slowly be

increased over time, starting off with gently exercising roughly three times per week if possible. It is essential you are in tune with your body and you do not over train.

STRENGTH & FLEXIBILITY

Your muscles may not be as flexible as they were, but give yourself time and the dedication to make this improvement. As the weeks go on, if you are consistent, you will move more freely, and your strength will return.

GRAB A FRIEND

Accountability can be one of the best ways to stay on track. Knowing you have someone counting on you to turn up to a class will probably make you less likely to skip that class!

BREASTFEEDING

Always ensure you are drinking plenty of water to stay hydrated and you are eating enough calories to maintain lactation while burning calories. You also need to ensure you are consuming enough calories so your body can recover well after exercising and continue to produce milk. Wearing a good sports bra will help with any pain you may be experiencing. A good cotton material will help to avoid any irritation and absorb any moisture.

LEARNER DRIVERS

The Gardaí have warned of a clamp down on tens of thousands of learner drivers who they say appear to be renewing their permits repeatedly rather than taking their driving test.

According to the Gardaí and the Road Safety Authority 41,316 drivers have renewed their Learner Permit at least four times. The Road Safety Authority have further stated that over 8,000 drivers are now on their tenth Learner Permit or more. The RSA have called on learner drivers to come forward and take the test. Learner drivers are required to be accompanied at all times with someone who holds a full Driving Licence and has held such Licence for at least two years. A driver who is driving without being so accompanied is liable to have their vehicle impounded. This is in addition to the penalty points and fixed charge fine which previously applied prior to the legislation being amended.

Love at first flight! Dana and Barry find love on Ryanair flight home

WEDDING OF THE WEEK

34

Nobody would ever think that a plane trip would lead you to find the love of your life – but that’s what happened when Dana Tascicova and Barry Hornibrook locked eyes on a Ryanair flight. Dana, who has been living in Killarney for the last 10 years, and Barry from Cork, stayed in touch after striking up conversation on a flight in the autumn of 2017. And in July, they sealed their love with a wedding ceremony in Dana’s home country, Slovakia. The couple, who are currently living in Muckross Road, arrived home to Killarney this week after getting married on July 13 by Fr Ladislav Sofranko SJ in High Tatras, Slovakia. Bridesmaid was Dana’s college friend Dominika Molnarova and Best Man was Barry’s college friend Michael Barry. Witnesses were Dana’s sister Jana Tascicova and Barry’s brother Colin Hornibrook. Dana, who works in Bebe Creche and Montessori in Countess Road, met Cork native Barry on a Ryanair flight when both were separately returning to Dublin from Bratislava. “We were sitting next to each other,” Dana told the Killarney Advertiser.

“The flight attendant was trying to explain that he had to move his bag but he didn’t understand her.” And afterwards the couple, who never thought they’d see each other again, kept in touch and eventually began dating. Then, on December 9 last, Barry got down on one knee in Killarney National Park and asked for her hand in marriage. “I was shocked but very happy. Then we started planning the wedding,” she said. “We had the wedding in Slovakia and it was really amazing with my close friends and family.” 50 guests enjoyed a reception in the picturesque Cedar Wellness Cottages located at the bottom of Lomnicky Peak, which is the highest mountain in Slovakia standing at over 2600 metres tall. At midnight, Dana was taken away by some friends and changed into Slovakian traditional clothes. They then sang to her in front of guests. After the wedding the happy couple stayed on in Slovakia for a number of days to visit family and tour the country followed by a trip to Italy and Croatia. They’re now hoping to have a joint party at home between Killarney and Cork for family and friends who couldn’t make it.

Their hectic week began with a joint celebration in the well-known local hostelry on Saturday night. “We had a great night,” Michael’s mother Ann told the Killarney Advertiser. “Well known local musician and song writer Donal Lucy provided the entertainment and it was a late night I can tell you.” Both friends are members Spa GAA Club and one birthday cake was decorated in the blue and yellow of the club. Ian is a huge Manchester United fan and the second cake was made in honour of the Red Devils. Ian, who suffered serious injuries as a result of a mountain bike accident in August 2017, was joined by his parents Mike and Nora on the trip. GARDEN MAGIC

Gardening - By Debby Looney

Debby is available for advice and garden consultations, just call 086 6088156 or email barnhillky@gmail.com

Choose your garden colour carefully A garden can be much enhanced by some colour. As always, the principles apply – bright, warm colours such as orange, red and purple advance towards you and appear larger, while cool blues and greens retreat away from the viewer and give a spacious feel. It is important to think carefully before you start - what is the end result you are looking for? Bright, vivid colours can be fun on a summers day, but what will it look like in the grey of winter? Will a bright definitive colour grow old quickly? Will it be the only, and maybe very obvious, bit of colour in the garden when autumn comes? On the other hand, will a pale colour look insipid? Colour is not the only consideration, what to paint is equally important. Painting outside is very much the same as indoor decorating, and often less is more! A small space will feel more confined if many different colours are used, or a lot of warm colours – however if cool colours are used, it will feel larger. On the other hand, using dark or warm colours in a large garden can create a cosy, intimate space. Take into account the people using the space. If kids are enthusiastic about starting a vegetable garden, brightly coloured raised beds can be very appealing. If the users are elderly, calm colours such as cream and pale blue are more appro-

priate. Bright mixed colours can have a confusing and disconcerting effect. When choosing a project, small is always a good way to start. At this time of year, birdhouses and birdboxes are great projects, especially with kids. The right paint, such as Cuprinol or Ronseal, will not only colour, but also preserve your timber. These paints can be used on timber, terracotta, brick and plastics, so they are very versatile. Old terracotta pots can be given a new lease of life with a nice bright colour, and fencing can be spruced up with minimum effort. Sadolin makes a fantastic paint called Superdec, which is ideal for treated timber such as picnic tables and railings. It is flexible and gives excellent coverage, as well as being water based. I have used it on timber window boxes, and it has been fantastic. Metal items such as obelisks and arches often come in black, and can look elegant and classy – but unobtrusive. Why not brighten them up with a lick of paint? The ideal time is now, when climbers are without leaves and can be cut back to give you access. In a colourful herbaceous border, a bright pink or orange can look very effective and fun, but arches and larger structures often look better in powder blues and sage greens. I hope I have given you all some ideas for a sunny day!

WINNER: Grace McCrae from Rathmore who won two tickets to see Séan Keane and The Mayo Concert Orchestra, which takes place on September 14 in the INEC Killarney.

Cancer fundraiser plans to step back in time It’s that time of year again, when vintage enthusiasts and lovers of all things oldschool will flock to the lands of Brendan Ferris in Gortnascarry, Beaufort for the annual Threshing Cancer event. Sunday, September 8 will mark the seventh anniversary of the renowned event which has raised an astonishing €172,000 for cancer support services across the county since its foundation. This year’s beneficiaries will be Recovery Haven Kerry, Comfort for Chemo, Kerry Hospice and the Kerry Cancer Support Group Cork/Kerry Link Bus. From very modest beginnings in 2013, Threshing Cancer has now developed into a hugely popular event, which not only showcases the old art of threshing, but other traditional skills such as basket making, butter making, bread making and much more – all a huge passion of those on the organising committee. It’s also a great day out for vintage enthusiasts, with a large display of machinery, tractors and cars due to arrive, while organisers have also ensured a great family day out, with lots of stalls, fun and novel games, competitions and raffles organised for the entire family. This year, organisers are hosting their first Show 'n' Shine event on the day, inviting car enthusiasts to bring along their prized motors to compete in a range of categories – everything from cleanest car to best modified to freshest classic.

Entry is €10 per car, which includes full access to the event for the driver. Organisers say that the success of the annual Threshing Cancer event is due in a huge way to the wonderful team of volunteers and those of the benefiting charities, who help each year with the smooth running of the event. The key aim, they say, is not only to provide a great day out for families and lovers of old Irish traditions, but also to raise as much funds as possible for vital cancer support services across the county. “We are solely committed to supporting cancer charities in Kerry through our vintage day and will continue to do so as long as we can,” Brendan explained. “Since our inception just six years ago, we have donated over €172,000 to cancer support services across the county - benefiting countless cancer sufferers and their families along the way. It's a sad fact that it's not until you find yourself in the tough position of dealing with cancer that you realise just how important these services are, and knowing that we are doing our bit to keep these vital services up and running is hugely important for us.” For regular updates on his year’s event be sure to follow ‘Threshing Cancer’ on Facebook or contact Brendan on 087 2604566 for more information.

Launch of Ireland’s biggest coffee morning

Representatives of Hospice and specialist palliative homecare services throughout the country gathered at Our Lady’s Hospice & Care Services, Harold’s Cross to launch ‘Ireland’s Biggest Coffee Morning for Hospice Together with Bewley’s’ this week. The group are calling on the people of Kerry to host a coffee morning on Thursday, September 19 to help raise vital funds for their local hospice, Kerry Hospice Foundation. Celebrating 27 years of coffee mornings, it is hoped that this year’s events in

homes and businesses across the country will raise a much needed €2 million for Hospices across Ireland, to meet growing demands for the service. Author and broadcaster, Maia Dunphy, officially launched this year’s campaign which is asking people across the country to support this important campaign by hosting or attending a coffee morning. Those who can’t attend a coffee morning can simply text COFFEE to 50300 and donate €4* to support local hospice and homecare services and help to give pa-

tients the best quality of life during their illness. “I’m very happy to be involved in this vital campaign and help to draw attention to the great work that the hospices do nationwide,” Ambassador Maia Dunphy said. “Across the country, Hospice has, and will continue to provide people with the comfort of knowing that they are cared for throughout what can be one of the most difficult times in a family’s life.” To register to host a coffee morning on Thursday, September 19, or on a date that suits you, go to www.hospicecoffeemorning.ie or call 1890 998 995. Hosts are provided with a Coffee Morning Pack containing Bewley’s coffee, posters and invitations free of charge. Remember, every cup counts!

Trump Checking the facts CORNER United States media outlet CNN has started fact checking claims made by President Trump and logging the false ones. Last week alone he made 48 statements that CNN proved were false. CNN started monitoring the president’s speeches on July 8. Since then, the broadcaster has worked out that he averaged 7.7 false claims per day. Trump was most frequently dishonest during his August 21 exchange with reporters on the White House lawn before departing for a fund-

raiser where he made a speech to veterans in Kentucky. Over the 35 minute speech he made 13 false claims. He made 12 more on Twitter and nine during an exchange with reporters while meeting with the president of Romania on August 20. Other examples included a speech at a campaign rally in Manchester, New Hampshire where he said: "They came from the hills, they came from the mountains, from the rivers, they came from all over the place. And they showed up, and they voted like nobody's seen

PRESENTATION: The Countess of Dunraven presenting the death mask of Daniel O’Connell to Maurice Buckley (Chairman of the OPW) at a special ceremony during the annual Daniel O’Connell Summer School in Derrynane House last weekend. Picture: John Allen

Liberator’s death mask donated to OPW A death mask of Daniel O’Connell, regarded as one the great figures of modern Irish history, was presented to the Office of Public Works (OPW) by the Countess of Dunraven at Derrynane House - the family home of O’Connell. The presentation of the death mask, which has been in the custodianship of the Dunraven family for over 160 years, was made at the Daniel O’Connell Summer School which took place in Derrynane House last weekend. O'Connell died in 1847 in Genoa, Italy, while on a pilgrimage to Rome, aged 71. At the time of O’Connell’s death, it was not uncommon that a death mask would be made of a person’s face. Death masks were often used as a reference by sculptors and artists when creating busts and paintings and are also highly valued in their own right. The Earl of Dunraven was a title in the peerage of Ireland created in 1822. The Dunraven and O’Connell families have a strong connection over many generations and it is believed the mask came into the care of the family over 160 years

ago. Derrynane House, the family home of O’Connell, is now dedicated to his life and achievements, under the care of the OPW. Following any restoration or conservation works required to the mask, the OPW will place the mask on public display at Derrynane House, where it will join a large and rich collection of items relating to O’Connell’s life. “As the custodians of Derrynane House and on behalf of the Irish State, the OPW is honoured and delighted to accept this generous gift from Countess Dunraven,” Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran, TD, Minister of State with responsibility for the Office of Public Works (OPW) and Flood Relief said. Accepting the mask on behalf of the OPW, Chairman of the OPW Maurice Buckley added that Derrynane House was one of the great influences on Daniel O’Connell’s life. “It was his childhood home and later his country residence,” he said. “Today Derrynane House is much more than a museum, it is a space that tells the story, from the cradle to the grave of the Liberator. This mask will be an incredibly valuable addition to the collection.”

The ‘Climate Crisis - 11 years to save Our Common Home’ season runs from September 1 to October 4 when Christian churches around the world focus on prayer and action to protect the natural world and to protect creation. This time can be described as the churches’ Eco Time. The title ‘Our Common Home’ is what is used by Pope Francis in his letter Laudato Si’ on Care for Our Common Home, which he addressed “to every person living on the planet”. To mark this Season of Creation all parishes across the diocese have received copies of the attached leaflet which explains the theme and gives suggestions of practical actions to be taken in the three areas of energy, water and waste. The leaflet will also be available on the dioceseofkerry.ie. This five week season gives parishes the opportunity to include the theme in Sunday Masses, and resources to support the leaflet have been circulated to the 53 parishes. The Radio Kerry programme ‘Horizons’, the daily ‘Just a Thought’ and the dioc-

esan Facebook page will all highlight the theme of Climate Crisis and in particular what we can do to help the situation. Climate Change Activist Lorna Gold features on Horizons at 9am on Radio Kerry this Sunday morning. ‘Climate Crisis: Food, Floods and Faith’ a special season of creation workshop is planned for Tuesday, September 17, at 8pm in Killarney, in the John Paul 2 Pastoral Centre, Rock Road. There, local eco leaders Lisa Fingleton and Martha Farrell will speak on the specific impacts of the Climate Crisis on food and floods. Local climate action groups will display information stands to give people the opportunity to get involved locally. These groups include: Transition Kerry; Kerry Climate Action Network; Kerry Sustainable Energy Cooperative (KSEC); the Climate Action Regional Office (CARO); Grow It Yourself (GIY) and Trócaire. “The climate crisis requires our decisive action, here and now and the church is fully committed to playing her part,” Pope Francis has said. This is an initiative of the Justice, Peace and the Integrity of Creation, JPIC Committee of the Diocese of Kerry. There will be a warm welcome for all!

WELCOME Welcome to August’s Home and Living. It’s back to school time and there’s sunshine! It’s been such a mixed bag weather wise. We try and eat on the patio all summer and I think we managed about three nights this year - and one of those we had to abandon as it was just too cold! So, a nice September would really be appreciated now please! On the plus side, I do like a bit of retail therapy and rain is as good an excuse as any to go shopping! We are looking at bedrooms this month, master and guest rooms, which was good timing as I have been designing a new room for my son – which I promised about two years ago! I am so thrilled he is leaning towards scandi boho, with some retro posters thrown in for good measure - very sophisticated for a 12-year-old - but I’m not complaining! If you're planning a revamp of your master bedroom, take a look at our tips. If you are having some friends or family coming for Christmas – yes, it’s only just around the corner - have a look at how to make your guests feel pampered. Next month we are looking at making your home winter ready, with throws, cushions and fireplaces, for getting all those lovely cozy hygge feelings.

Sweet Dreams

DESIGNING YOUR

MASTER BEDROOM

If you're in need of some major master bedroom inspiration - then you've come to the right place!

The master bedroom is often the last room in the home to get a makeover. We tend to revamp the most seen areas first and often the budget is used up by the time we get around to the bedrooms! We spend on average one third of our life sleeping, so it’s very important to have a relaxing room to get the best night’s sleep possible! Whether you want a complete overhaul or just some styling ideas, these rooms will get you psyched to start the project.

might feel a bit daunting, but if you choose a more understated print and stick to a tight colour story, it won't be overwhelming. If you are not that brave, a feature wall with a bolder aesthetic might be your thing - both work!

Have fun with it

Introduce a reading nook

When designing your master bedroom, the only real rule is to be true to your personal style. If that means mixing fun prints and using bold colors - don't hesitate to do so.

We may not have time for sitting in our bedroom reading, but there are days when the solitude you get in a bedroom is needed. If you have the space, add a reading nook. All you need is a comfy chair with a side table and lamp or standing light.

Choose a stylish headboard A wide upholstered headboard brings more fabric into a bedroom, while enabling the integration of eclectics. Think of it as an extra opportunity to use color without taking up a huge amount of space.

Liven up the walls Wallpapering your whole bedroom

Pick a luxe carpet If you’re choosing carpet - go luxe. A bedroom is not a high traffic area so you can afford to go for a softer pile and even a lighter colour. This makes the whole space feel more luxurious.

Opt for minimalism If your style is minimalistic, then you

can’t go wrong with white walls and a simple black four poster for that wow factor, without the clutter.

Go scandi boho If you love the bohemian look but also want your master bedroom room to feel grounded and contemporary - boho is your go to. Think patterned rugs and pillows, wicker furniture, and seagrass shades.

Think big with art If your headboard is low profile, this allows for a large piece of art above the bed. You could also try a gallery wall if you don't have larger artworks to display.

Pick an anchor item A headboard is cool, but this is your master bedroom after all, so go all out. You’re not going to need masses of fabric as you do with curtains, so you can afford to go higher end here. A bold

pattern and colour makes an all-white room pop.

Balance coziness with style Even if your home is more traditional in style, you don’t need to go all chintzy, the decor doesn’t have to match. Balance it out with contemporary light fixtures, a geometric rug, and bright pops of colour from a lamp and blankets. Lacquered furniture also goes a long way to modernise a space.

Use bright colours Contrary to popular belief, you do not need to stay completely neutral in a bedroom deep blues, purples, and jewel-tone greens liven up a stark white room. To up the vibe even more, add in brass accents like a lamp, drawer pulls, and a chandelier.

A NEW BEGINNING FOR THE DEN The design scheme was selected in order to make the area feel welcoming, different and full of character for teenagers. Different textures were introduced, the rug, sofa and natural material of the blind, work in harmony. The geometric pattern of the Roman blind was selected to go with the lively atmosphere of the kid’s den. Custom made architrave frames the window giv-

ing it definition and connects the room with the outside. The burnt orange brings a feeling of warmth and makes the space inviting. Autumn is a perfect time for new beginnings. Interior design by Kadri Bormeister

Pamper your guests

WITH SMALL CHANGES

Roll out the red carpet - or the patterned rug - with these spare bedroom decorating ideas. If you don’t have time or budget for a full makeover - small touches like a potted plant, fresh throw pillow, or cozy throw can refresh your guest room before your guests, or as my nan used to call them “the visitors” arrive. If you have the time, give a dated space a budget-friendly design update by painting the walls, ceiling, or floor. A large piece of art can completely change the tone of a room. A corner chair and reading light is also a great addition and can be borrowed from another room. This will give your guests their own space! Before the doorbell rings, lay out some fresh towels, extra blankets and pillows. A footstool at the end of the bed gives

them somewhere to place their case. Add some new magazines plus a carafe of water and drinking glasses. Earn some bonus points by leaving the WiFi password on the bedside locker, and quickly test the lights for burnt bulbs. The finishing touch: bringing in a bouquet of fresh flowers, either from the store or snipped from the backyard. I love to put a basket or jars with some small shampoos, shower gel, soap, some make-up removal pads and some facecloths. All these little extras make your guests feel extra special, so expect to see a lot more RSVPs coming your way. Your guests will want to visit again and again — and give you a five-star rating if they could.

THE PERFECT ENTRANCE Resin Surfacing is the perfect solution for tired looking driveways, pathways and patios. It is a mixture of highly decorative natural aggregates bound with a clear, odourless polyurethane resin. It’s extremely long lasting, hard wearing and low maintenance. Resin bound aggregates can be in-

stalled directly over existing concrete, tarmac and other stable surfaces, eliminating the removal of old surfaces with minimal disruption and saving you money in the process. This outstanding natural finish will add to the appearance and value of your property. As well as having a highly cosmetic finish with outstanding kerb appeal, resin is over 10 times more Eco-friendly in

comparison to concrete Most importantly it allows water to drain naturally through the finished surface, reducing puddles and slippage. resin bound is a surface with high anti-slip properties and it is weed resistant, meaning no more maintenance. Over 20 colours available Certified installer

VINTAGE CARS: Local vintage cars owners took 60 Roses of Tralee from past years on a car trip in the Rose of Tralee parade on Saturday night. Pictured were: Veronica McCambridge Blennerhassett (1973 Rose of Tralee), Therese Gillespie Collins (1965 Rose of Tralee) and Sally-Ann Leahy (2019 Kerry Rose). Photo: Domnick Walsh

Roses and car club celebrate anniversaries in style The Kingdom Veteran Vintage and Classic Car Club celebrated a milestone anniversary in Tralee on Saturday night. This year, the biggest classic car club in the county, is marking its 40th anniversary. When it was founded in 1979 one of the club’s first undertakings was a car run as part of the International Rose of Tralee Festival. This year the festival is celebrating its 60th anniversary. On Saturday night, 23 members of the club led the traditional opening parade into Denny St to mark both organisa-

tions big birthdays. On board the 23 classic cars were former Rose of Tralee winners. “We are grateful to our members who made their magnificent cars available to drive the Roses through the town,” Club Secretary, Garret Foley, said. “The KVVCCC has over 200 members, many with more than one car, and while the club is going from strength-tostrength we are looking forward to the next 40 years.” The next major event for the club is next month’s Ballymac Vintage Day, an event that was launched last night (Thursday) at O’Riadas Bar in Ballymac.

Motorcycle festival in Ballyvourney Motorcycle fans will flock over the county bounds this weekend for the new Café Racer festival. Running from tonight (Friday) until Sunday afternoon, the three-day meet, based at the Mill’s Inn, will feature live bands, ride-outs and much more. A café racer is a lightweight, powerful motorcycle optimised for speed and handling rather than comfort – and for quick rides over short distances. With bodywork and control layout recalling early - 1960s Grand Prix road racing

motorcycles, café racers are noted for featuring low-mounted handlebars, prominent seat cowling and elongated fuel tank – and frequently knee-grips indented in the fuel tank. The term originated among British motorcycle enthusiasts of the early 1960s in London, specifically within the Rocker or "Ton-Up Boys" youth subculture, where the bikes were used for short, quick rides between popular cafés, in Watford at the Busy Bee café, and the Ace Café in Stonebridge, London.

Family Carers Ireland are calling on friends, family members and health professionals to nominate family carers for 2019’s ‘Carer of the Year’ awards. The deadline for nominations is September 26. The awards recognise carers nationwide who sacrifice so much to caring for their loved ones. There are over 15,000 family carers in Kerry over the age of 15. They are asking those who know a carer that they believe should be recognised for their work in caring for loved ones, to please make a nomination. There are two categories of awards, ‘Carer of the Year’ and four ‘Young Carer of the Year’ who represent Dublin, Ulster/ Connacht, Leinster and Munster. The ‘Carer of the Year’ awards will take place in November at the Westin Hotel in Dublin hosted by broadcasters, and patrons of the charity, Mary Kennedy and Marty Whelan. ................................................................

1ST ANNIVERSARY FLYNN

I hide my tears, When I say your name, But the pain in my heart is still the same, Although I smile and seem carefree, There is no one, Who misses you more than me. I think of you as living, In the heart’s of those you touched, For nothing loved is ever lost, And you were loved so much. You were someone wonderful, And words just can’t convey, How much I wish that you were here. Once more with us today. Loved forever Maria, Paul, Ethan and Arianne.

THE IMPOSSIBLE

DREAM

Kerry’s young guns can halt Dublin’s Drive for Five but they’ll need to play the perfect game, writes Adam Moynihan

SPORT

30.08.2019

Let’s be real here. Dublin are 1/5 to win on Sunday. That means that in the simplest of terms, the bookmakers believe that Jim Gavin’s team have an 83% chance of defeating Kerry. If they turn up and are allowed to do what they always do, they will secure an unprecedented five-in-a-row. This Dublin team has devoured every opponent that has been laid out before them and never before have Kerry gone into a senior All-Ireland as such rank outsiders. But look, 83% isn’t 100%. There is a window of opportunity here for Kerry and it would be foolish to suggest otherwise. The Munster champions have, at the very least, a puncher’s chance, although it’s also true that they’ll need a number of key factors to work in their favour. Dublin are possibly the greatest team ever when it comes to punishing weaknesses. To win, Kerry cannot show any.

KICKOUTS

The kickouts, especially Shane Ryan’s, will be pivotal. As we saw in that devastating 12 minutes against Mayo, Dublin’s press can suffocate the life out of the opposition if it works as planned. Securing primary possession is huge in every game but the champions’ forwards are deadly when their supply lines are fully operational. Ryan will need to find a way out every time Dublin kill the ball. It’s a daunting task for rookie goalkeeper who plays a lot of his football outfield, but the Rathmore man has done well so far. Going short is rarely an option against Dublin. They love trapping their opponents and ganging up to force a turnover. Will Kerry try overloading one side of the pitch, which might disrupt the Dubs’ favoured formation, or will Ryan try to go long over the press? Either way, ball-winners like David Moran and whoever partners him in midfield will have to be ultra competitive, and the rest of Kerry’s middle eight will need to snaffle up their fair share of breaks as well. Moran’s importance cannot be understated. If he can continue his recent run of form, Kerry should at least be in the picture. Meanwhile, it remains to be seen who will be entrusted by Peter Keane to marshal Dublin’s talismanic No. 8 Brian Fenton. Jack Barry is only just returning from injury but the Na Gaeil youngster has to be seen as a viable option if fully fit. He has held Fenton to just one point in the last four meetings between the sides, a remarkable stat when you consider the fact that Fenton is Dublin’s third highest scorer from play in this year’s championship. If Kerry break even at midfield, that will relieve some of the pressure on man

markers Jason Foley and Tadhg Morley, who will undoubtedly have their hands full with Paul Mannion and Con O’Callaghan. O’Callaghan is the frontrunner for Footballer of the Year and Mannion isn’t far behind him so Foley and Morley will be doing well to contain the pair. Nullifying them completely might be unrealistic but limiting their goal chances will be massively important. To date, Dublin are averaging over two goals a game in this year’s championship. If they manage more than that on Sunday, the chances of a Kerry victory will be slim.

THE FINAL QUARTER

So, if Kerry can negotiate all of those challenges, and get enough ball to the likes of David Clifford, Paul Geaney, Stephen O’Brien and Seán O’Shea, and if Clifford and Geaney and O’Brien and O’Shea bring their shooting boots, they should be there or thereabouts heading into the final quarter of the All-Ireland final. And as we saw back in 2016, that’s when things get really interesting. Kerry will need to compete for 70+ minutes and to do that, Peter Keane will almost certainly call on 21 of the 26 players at his disposal. On Sunday, the 15 Kerry footballers on the field at the end of game will be just as important, if not more important, than the ones who start. Everyone wants to march around the pitch behind the Artane Band on All-Ireland final day but in this particular instance, if I was one of the players who narrowly missed out on a starting berth I wouldn’t be completely heartbroken. When it comes down to it, the guys who are called upon in the final quarter will have an incredibly significant role to play on Sunday. (Assuming, of course, that Kerry are still in the contest.) It’s a big ask to get all of these things right and I suppose with all the talk of how good Dublin are, it’s hard to be optimistic. How do you stop the unstoppable? I believe it was Helen Keller who once said (I say “believe”, I obviously googled it) that optimism is the faith that leads to achievement, and that nothing can be done without hope and confidence. If there’s one thing Kerry fans are rarely lacking, it’s hope, and if there’s one thing Kerry players are rarely lacking, it’s confidence. Let’s bring both on Sunday and see what happens.

30.08.2019 Looking forward to the new basketball season for Scotts Lakers St Paul's Killarney are Mike Pierce (Manager), Toby Christensen, Shane McCarthy (Coach), Victor Martínez and John Brosnan (Assistant Coach). Pic: Eamonn Keogh.

Lakers ready to rock With the new season just around the corner, Eamonn Keogh runs the rule over the new-look Scotts Lakers The new basketball season is just weeks away and Scotts Lakers St Paul’s are eagerly looking forward to the new campaign. The Killarney side enjoyed a progressive and successful season last year when they finished second in the Southern Conference before losing in the National League Division 1 semi-final to eventual winners DBS Éanna. A number of changes in personnel on the coaching and playing side have taken place during the off-season. Shane McCarthy has taken on the role as new head coach for Scotts Lakers and he takes over from Cormac O'Donoghue, who guided the side over the past two seasons. Cormac has served Killarney Basketball as an outstanding player and coach for several decades and he has decided to take a well deserved break. His replacement is a former Irish international at underage level and has enjoyed a successful playing and coaching career with Blue Demons, winning several league and cup titles. He will be ably assisted by John Brosnan, who has

gained extensive experience at coaching and management level over the years, while Mike Pierce will take on team management duties. On the playing side, Scotts Lakers will be boosted with the addition of some considerable new signings. American Aaron Jackson will be joined by Toby Christensen from Denmark and Spaniard Victor Martínez. All three foreign signings are 6'6” and are versatile players capable of playing in various positions, which will give the Lakers extra options this season. A full squad of Irish players have been in pre-season training for a number of weeks. Mark Greene, who enjoyed a phenomenal campaign last season, will be joined once again by the likes of Andrew Fitzgerald, Séamus Brosnan and Cian Clernon. Former Blue Demons star Carlton Cuff is also an exciting addition and is likely to play a very prominent role. The squad is still being finalised and there will be further additions announced in the coming weeks.

St Paul's U18 stars Jamie O'Sullivan, Jack Corridan and Daniel Carroll are also training with the squad and they are just some of the talented juvenile players in the club who have the ability to step up to National League level in the coming years. Unfortunately, the Lakers will have to plan without a number of other local Killarney players who have been ruled out for the upcoming campaign. Pádraig Lucey, Paul Clarke and Mark O'Shea are unavailable due to Gaelic football commitments while a busy work schedule prevents Philip O'Connor from participating. A long-term injury is also expected to rule Dylan O'Sullivan out of contention for most of the season. Naturally, head coach Shane McCarthy would prefer to have a full complement of players available but he is looking forward to the new campaign. The Cork native is confident of building on the progress of the last two seasons. “Pre-season training has been going well and our European players Toby and Victor look very promising,” he said. “Our new American, Aaron, is also of great pedigree and all three have the potential and ability to make us a

strong, formidable side this season. They are all of similar size so we will have a lot of rotation options, with the right mix of Irish players to adapt to different situations on defence and on offence.” It will be Scotts Lakers third year in succession participating in Division 1 of the National League. Following a lengthy absence of top level basketball in Killarney, the Lakers have made great strides over the past two years and there is no doubt that they have the potential to progress even further in the campaign ahead. The presence of a senior National League team in Killarney has been a huge boost in the growth and development of the juvenile teams at St Paul's Basketball Club, with record numbers taking part. As well as being role models on the court, the Lakers foreign trio and other national league players will also be coaching young players both in the club and in local schools. Scotts Lakers first game of the new season will be away to Limerick Celtics on Saturday, September 21 while the first home game in Killarney Sports Centre will take place on Saturday, September 28 against IT Carlow at 7.30pm.

SPORTEXTRA John Brosnan completed a very good season this past week by adding the Michael Blackwell Cup to the John Drumm Cup he won earlier in the summer. He took the win in the race hosted by the Killarney Cycling Club on a new 15km circuit around Beaufort. He was part of a five-man group that broke away and made his vital break inside the last kilometre of the 45km race to win easily in the finish. Defending champion Conor Kissane, also of the Killarney Cycling Club, was

second with Tralee Manor West’s Cathal Moynihan in third. The underage races were as always hotly contested with Sliabh Luachra’s Ciarán Dennehy winning the U11s, Killarney Cycling Club’s Cathal Larkin winning the U12s, Callum Steadman Murphy from the same club won the U13 title and Shane Galvin emerged victorious in the U14 race. Sliabh Luachra’s Ciarán Finnegan clinched the U15 title while Aaron O’Donoghue took home the U16 County Champion.

N ational Junior title edges closer for O’Donoghue

Killarney driver Colin O’Donoghue did his National Junior Rally Championship title aspirations the world of good with a category win on Sunday’s Galway Summer Rally. Another category win on the final round, the October weekend Fastnet Rally, will secure him the championship after his main rival suffered mechanical problems on Sunday’s Gort-based event. “I’m delighted to win the Juniors outright and get maximum points for the championship,” the Ford Escort driver said. “It was a great battle all day with Aaron McIntyre. Hard luck to David Kelly, engine problems put him on the sideline. “It will be down to the wire in the Fastnet in Bantry. I’m looking forward to another epic battle.” |

Fassbender Safety message

Killarney actor and Hollywood A-lister Michael Fassbender has joined a group of motorsport and other celebrities as part of the FIA’s world road safety campaign. World motorsport’s governing body ran an advertising campaign in the official

programme of last weekend’s ADAC Rally Germany. Fassbender’s message was for drivers to check their vision. Formula 1 driver Fernado Alonso pleaded for drivers and passengers to buckle up while five-time Moto GP champion Marc Marquez said to always wear a helmet. There are a total of 16 celebrities involved in the campaign. 3,500 people die every day on the world's roads and the FIA is running its ‘Action For Road Safety’ campaign to reduce this number. |

F alvey flies the flag in France

Rathmore's Todd Falvey participated in last weekend's Vosges Festival Rally in France in his Porsche 911. The rally, based in Molsheim, close to the European city of Strasbourg, is a demonstration style-event open to owners of rally cars of historic importance. Falvey is a regular competitor on such events and has contested rallies like the Eifel Festival in Germany in the past but this was his first time contesting the French version. The rally, which ran from Thursday to Saturday is based in the town which is famous as the home of Bugatti.
