David Kenny arrives in Japan for Olympic debut The wheels of the plane have finally touched down in Tokyo as a Kerry Olympian undergoes final preparations for his 50km Race Walk debut next Thursday.

| By Sean Moriarty While David Kenny’s Olympic adventure is just beginning, it is over for Monika Dukarska and Aileen Crowley. However, the Killorglin pair can hold their heads high as they are now ranked 11th in the world in terms of Olympic women’s pairs rowing. In the early hours of yesterday morning (Thursday) Irish time, they finished fifth in the Women’s Pair B Final. They were beaten by the winners, Australia. Denmark comfortably took silver with third place going to Romania. The USA just pipped the Irish boat for fourth place. “I have definitely fulfilled a lifetime goal and I'm really happy to have become an Olympian and grateful for having the opportunity to represent Ireland at such a global event,” Monika told the Killarney Advertiser. "This has been an amazing experience from start to finish."
| By Sean Moriarty 22-year-old David Kenny from Rusheen, Firies, arrived yesterday (Thursday) following in the footsteps of Glenflesk athlete Gillian O’Sullivan who walked for Ireland in the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney. David finished second in the U23 European Championships in Estonia last month but in Olympic terms he is ranked 54th in the world. Race walkers, like other endurance athletes, tend to come into better form in their late 20s or early 30s. At home in Rusheen, the excitement is building ahead of his race which is scheduled for 8.30am next Thursday. His father Noel, a postman in the Kilcummin area, mother Mary, and three sisters Sarah, Laura and Rebecca can’t wait for Thursday’s event. “I have taken the whole week off,” Noel told the Killarney Advertiser. “He is ranked 54th in the world, but if he finishes 53rd I will be a happy man.”

soccer for Ballyhar Dynamos, football for Firies and hurling for Dr Crokes. He was also an accomplished cross-country runner through the winter months. Farranfore-Maine Valley AC members Mike O’Connor and Jerome Crowley – both former champion race-walkers –
encouraged him into the discipline so he could compete at the Track and Field events during the summer months. His career took off and already this year he has competed in Estonia and has attended warm-weather training events in Spain and South Africa.
“The day after St Stephen’s Day he was on a flight to South Africa for training, that’s the dedication and I don’t know any other 22-year-old who has travelled so much,” Noel added. David has been mentored by Cork athlete Rob Heffernan, who participated in five Olympic Games and took bronze in London in 2012. “Rob keeps telling David that he is better than him at the same age,” Noel said. Kenny’s personal best for the 50km walks is 1 hour 23 minutes and 6 seconds. The expected race-winning pace is in the region of 1 hour and 19 minutes.
New Omniplex cinema opens today creating 25 jobs | By Michelle Crean Movie lovers are in for a treat from today (Friday) - as the brand new and unique luxury five screen Park Road cinema - complete with the latest Barco Laser projection technology and a MAXX Recline screen - finally opens. There's been great anticipation by locals as to what the new state-of-the-art facility will offer - and they won't have to wait any longer as the doors officially open today. It's also a huge economic boost to the
town with the creation of over 25 full and part-time jobs. “We’re delighted to open our newest cinema in Killarney and can’t wait to welcome the people to the Omniplex experience!" Mark Anderson, Director of Omniplex Cinemas told the Killarney Advertiser. "The MAXX Recline auditorium with all electric reclining armchairs simply must be experienced. This all-laser projection facility is at the cutting edge of worldwide cinema technology.” He added that they have worked hard over the last 16 months to ensure their
customers across Ireland enjoy a safe cinema going experience. "We will have the same safety measures in place here in Killarney like online ticketing, reduced auditorium capacity and self-scanning of tickets. Coincidentally, our MAXX Recline screen is naturally well suited to a socially distant world with large fully electric recliner seats and a two metre gap between rows.”
SAFETY Omniplex’s safety measures include In-Cinema Seat Separation – two metre bubble around each cinema booking.
Families and friends may sit beside each other up to a maximum of five guests. Online Ticketing and Shop; tickets may be purchased online and pre-ordering of cinema treats online, for collection, is encouraged. Limited capacity; a maximum of 50 per screen with social distancing also in place in foyers and toilets. Enhanced cleaning regimes; including screen protection at all customer touchpoints. Sanitisation stations in foyers, reduced showtimes, for example only one movie will start and end at a time to facilitate social distancing and extra cleaning.

Ambitious multi-million Euro changes for ‘The Sem’ An ambitious multi-million Euro project is set to totally transform one local school - as Minister for Education, Norma Foley, announced an extensive refurbishment plan for St Brendan’s College on Monday morning. | By Michelle Crean Going forward the extensive building project will ultimately replace the existing school structure with a state-ofthe-art campus and facilities for the 750 students and staff, plus there’ll be three SEN base classes along with one class to specifically cater for children with multiple disabilities. This extensive refurbishment will transform St Brendan’s by providing 26 general classrooms, five science labs, two multimedia rooms, a textiles room, a music room, an arts and craft room, a home economics room, a construction studies room, engineering room, and a technology room. The building project will also include staff rooms, an office, a GP room and data communication centre as well as a PE Hall and fitness suite. The Department recently approved interim accommodation for the school to provide three classes for Special Education Needs purposes for 2021/22 school year under the Department’s Modular Framework. “This ambitious multi-million Euro building project is an endorsement of the staff
of St Brendan’s College for their tireless commitment and endeavour to educating the young people of Killarney and surrounding areas,” Minister Foley said. “This significant project will provide state-of-the-art facilities and special education provision thus ensuring that this educational institution that is ‘The Sem’ will continue to provide a first class education experience for many years to come.”
VISION
School principal Sean Coffey thanked Minister Foley for her forward-looking vision for the provision of education at second level in Killarney. “St Brendan’s has a proud and lengthy education tradition, but it was now timely to reimagine this school site to look forward to the next 160 years. This is an investment in the future of our whole community,” he said. “Situated at the heart of the town, adjacent to the National Park, reinvigorating these old buildings will serve to hugely benefit our students, our staff and our community, all of whom are deserving of the state-of-the-art facilities. We can now look forward to creating a modern learning environment couched in these

historic buildings.” Mr Coffey added that this project was only made possible by the vision and support provided to the school by Bishop Ray Browne and the dedicated volunteer Board of Management at the school. “Our Patron enables us to think creatively about the future of all aspects of St Brendan’s while our Board enacts that vision through its hard work.” Also welcoming the announcement, Ms Lorna Larkin, Chairperson of the Board of Management thanked the many staff
who have worked so diligently and creatively at St Brendan’s to provide a holistic education for all of the students. She said that the Board were looking forward to engaging a Design Team who would rework the existing fabric of the school into an exciting place of learning for the 21st century. The official announcement was also attended by Bishop Ray Browne, Patron of St Brendan’s as well as Ms Hannah Devlin Chairperson of the Parents’ Council at the school.

The Kilcummin Club player is out of hospital and recovering at home. He was able to attend last Sunday’s Munster Final at Fitzgerald Stadium as a spectator. Afterwards his teammates invited him on to the pitch during their post-match celebrations.
“It was nice to meet everyone, I spent so much time with them and especially after such a good win,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “I am feeling good. The hospital staff were unbelievable. My goal is to go back playing football with my club and then Kerry. I will take it step-by-step.” Sean is considered a rising star of Kerry football. He would have played a key role alongside Peter Keane’s men this season. He won an All-Ireland Minor medal for Kerry in 2017 and was a member of the Kilcummin side that won the All-Ireland Club Intermediate Football Championship in 2019.

A much loved local not-for-profit café has reopened its doors for indoor dining this week much to the delight of their regulars. | By Michelle Crean After the latest easing of COVID restrictions Ross Café at the Kerry Mental Health Association offices - which serves deliciously home-cooked food, freshly made sandwiches, home-baking and other tasty treats on Upper Lewis Road - is open to everyone daily form 10am to 4pm from Monday to Friday. The café had reopened for outdoor dining and take away last month and so far, customers have been enjoying the “céad míle fáilte” from popular staff Cathleen Collins and Mags Keogh. “There’s a warm ambience and a feeling of positivity when you walk through the doors of the Ross Café," General Manager of Kerry Mental Health Association, John Drummey, said. "That’s something we’ve all been craving since the onset of the pandemic and the subsequent temporary closure of
the café. Customers who come to enjoy the Ross Café experience can be assured that the profits go towards the promotion of the general welfare of people and to support those with mental health challenges and their families and carers.” The café first opened in 2016 and, until the arrival of the pandemic, it has expanded to cater for the growing number of customers who enjoy the opportunity to take some time out and relax in good company. The facilities at the Kerry Mental Health Association Offices, formerly Ross Products, offer a number of meeting rooms which can be rented out to community groups and other charities catering for different activities. These include: art, relaxation, computer training, counselling, Bingo, music, drama and exercise classes. However, due to the ongoing COVID restrictions, the rooms remain closed until further notice.

Time to get your skates on! | By Sean Moriarty People of Killarney are being urged to have their say on a new skateboard park before next week's deadline. A public consultation on the project has been launched by Kerry County Council. Cllr Donal Grady, who first put forward the idea of a Killarney skateboard park in 2018, is urging the people of the town to have their say. It is proposed to build the park on land adjacent to the Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre with help and support from the KDYS. “In 2017 a group of skateboard enthusiasts approached me, they had no designated safe area to enjoy their sport. Sport is vital for youths, stakeboarding increases metabolism, improves balance and enhances coordination use,” Cllr Grady told the Killarney Advertiser. “Skateboarding is now an Olympic sport. Budget airline Ryanair has taken over the route following the collapse of Stobart Air on June 12. At around 1pm on Wednesday one of Ryanair’s Boeing 737-800 aircraft landed at the airport after completing its 50 minute journey from Dublin. Less than 25 minutes later it was back in the sky again for its return journey to the capital. The flight will operate once a day until September 1 when the frequency will increase to twice daily. “We are happy to report a positive start to the service which has been absent since early June,” the airport’s CEO John Mulhern told the Killarney Advertiser. “Ryanair intends to operate the route once a day until the end of August and has committed to restoring a twice-daily service from September.”
The route is operated on a commercial basis by Ryanair. Since 2011, Aer Lingus, through its subsidiary Aer Lingus Regional or its partners Aer Arran and Stobart Air operated the flight as a Government support Public Service Obligation (PSO). Previously, between 2008 and 2011 Ryanair operated the route on a commercial basis but withdrew at short notice as it could not make it profitable.
KSAI receives funding for business support | By Michelle Crean Going Green, KASI Cafe and Refill Store has been awarded €10,000 funding for business supports. The local non-governmental organisation (NGO) based on Beech Road, which opened its doors in October last year is one of 34 social enterprises around Ireland to receive funding and support from Rethink Ireland under their Social Enterprise Development Fund. KASI has been providing practical, moral and social support to Asylum Seekers, Refugees and other Migrants since 2000. Their work evolved from providing the necessary services and support to the new communities like providing information, practical help - filling in forms, advocacy work, referrals, outreach work; to organising various social and integration activities; to in recent years setting up social enterprises to create employment through training, placements and employment in the project itself. Their latest social enterprise, Going Green KASI Café and Zero Waste Refill Store, addresses social, economic and environmental issues.
Rethink Ireland’s Social Enterprise Development Fund has awarded €400,000 to 16 projects around Ireland, while a further 18 projects have been awarded a place on the organisation’s Genesis Programme which provides strategic business support to organisations. The Genesis Programme is an intensive two-day workshop that will focus on building the skills and knowledge needed to develop a sustainable social enterprise and to be successful in future funding opportunities. “We would like to congratulate Going Green, KASI Cafe and Refill Store on their success in receiving a Social Enterprise Development Fund Award from Rethink Ireland,” Chief Executive of Kerry County Council, Moira Murrell, said. "Coming out of an extremely challenging period for Irish society – and Irish businesses – we’re delighted with this good news story for Kerry. Social enterprises have an important role to play in guiding Ireland to become a more inclusive and equal society. Organisations like Going Green, KASI Cafe and Refill Store are leading the charge by not only creating jobs but working towards bringing about positive social change.”

"Tony was one of life's true gentlemen" Communities across East Kerry and beyond were hugely saddened to learn of the passing of one of "life's true gentlemen", Tony Moynihan, on Sunday. | By Michelle Crean Tributes have been pouring in for the Rathmore native who served as vice-chairman with his beloved Rathmore GAA Club since 2019. Tony, who served his club, parish, community and East Kerry GAA for decades, and was named the 2018 East Kerry GAA Person of the Year, was laid to rest on Tuesday following Funeral Mass in St Joseph's Church. "We extend deepest sympathy to the Mohnihan family, Marie, Tadhg and Donal, all his relatives and friends and Rathmore C.L.G. on the very sad loss of Tony Moynihan, Raheen, Rathmore," Michael O'Mahony, PRO of East Kerry GAA, said. "He served many roles for his club, from being a star player, a long standing development officer, an All-Ireland quiz winner, and most recently an ace Strictly Come Dancing participant. He was the welcoming face that greets so many arriving to Rathmore sports complex and the person who made sure everything was ready for them."
FOOTBALL CAREER
Tony first came to prominence as a brilliant underage player in the early 1970s when organised underage football was in its infancy in the county. A County medal at U14 in 1973, when he lined out at midfield, showed his great potential. "He burst on the scene at senior level in 1978 when he won his first O'Donoghue Cup medal. He was corner forward playing alongside the great John Saunders. This was the summer Argentina won the World Cup, with Mario Kempes being top scorer. Tony was Rathmore's Kempes with flowing long hair, headband and the deadly left leg. Unfortunately, Tony's football was then badly hampered by asthma. This meant that often he was not able to play full games. However, it did not stop him making an impression, which was best exemplified in the O'Donoghue Cup final in 1984. Tony came on as a substitute 10 minutes into the second half. He scored the crucial goal, winning his second medal. He also annexed the Man of the Match award!"
OFF THE FIELD
Off the field Tony had been Development Officer in Rathmore for many years and at a time when massive development happened in the club. "He oversaw the three pitches as if they were his own and was the man

that most teams first met when they come to Rathbeg. Whether it was senior teams, school teams, ladies teams or underage teams, Tony greeted all with a smile and with respect." Over the last number of years, Rathmore has been the home venue for East Kerry U21 and Minor teams, for Championship and challenge matches. "Tony went above and beyond the call of duty to look after them at all times. With Tony's co-operation the East Kerry Minors won three county championships in a row. He made sure that everything needed was ready and in immacculate condition, including pitch, practice area, showers, flood lights, kitchen facilities or meeting rooms. A quick phone call to Tony is all that was needed for everything to be arranged." After hanging up his boots, Tony became interested in quizzes and part of the Rathmore Quiz team. In total he won six All-Ireland titles in 'Question Time', three in Scor and three in Seachtain na Gaeilge. In November 2017, Tony demonstrated his versatility, and willingness to do anything for his club when he took to the stage at the INEC in a club fundraiser, 'Strictly Hollywood'. Demonstrating a nimbleness of foot reminiscent of his playing days, he dazzled the audience with his dance partner Mary Kelleher as they waltzed around the iconic venue. In his family life, Tony had to overcome the tragic loss of his wife Sheila when his three children, Marie, Tadhg and Donal, were young. They're now following in his footsteps playing an active role as players and officers in Rathmore GAA and LGFA clubs. "He will be sadly missed by so many. Ar dheis De go raibh a anam dilis."
| By Michelle Crean People who have yet to receive their first vaccine dose can do so via a walk-in clinic in Killarney this weekend. Killarney Sports & Leisure Centre, as well as the Kerry Sports Academy, Tralee, is offering the vaccine without appointment to anyone aged 18 and over. Walk-ins can attend the Killarney centre this coming Saturday (July 31), or the Tralee centre on Tuesday, August 3, from 11am to 3pm. The clinics on both days will be offering first doses of the Pfizer BioNTech vaccine. Second doses will not be available, and these walk-in clinics are only open to people who have not already received any dose of a vaccine. Michael Fitzgerald, Chief Officer Cork Kerry Community Healthcare said that staff at the centre have already offered appointments by text to anyone from the area who registered online at hse.ie. “This is an opportunity for anyone in Kerry who may have missed an appointment to get their first vaccination," he said. "It will also allow anyone who has not registered online yet to get their first dose. Given the wide geographic area that we cover, we are pleased to be able to offer this additional opportunity to the local population aged 18 and over to get their first dose.” Anyone who wishes to receive a vaccine
at the clinics must be aged 18 or over, be attending for their first dose as it will not be possible to administer second doses, bring photographic ID and their PPS number.
VACCINES FOR YOUNGER PEOPLE
Meanwhile, earlier this week it was announced by Minister for Health, Stephen Donnelly TD, that those aged 12-15 years-old will be offered an mRNA vaccine based on advice received by the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) from the National Immunisation Advisory Committee (NIAC). To date, two mRNA vaccines have been approved by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) for use in this age group - Comirnaty® (Pfizer/BioNTech) and Spikevax® (Moderna). During clinical trials the estimate for efficacy of both vaccines was reported as one hundred percent in these age groups. “I am delighted to be in a position to confirm that our young people will be offered an opportunity to protect themselves from COVID-19," Minister Donnelly said. "The outstanding progress of our COVID-19 vaccination programme is making continues. To date, we have administered 5.55 million doses. This has resulted in a marked reduction in levels of severe disease and hospitalisation and enabled us to continue with the safe re-opening of Irish society.”

The expansion of a local food hub is set to create 162 jobs - both direct and indirect - as well as contribute an estimated €9m in new income to the Kerry economy over the next three years. | By Michelle Crean Kerry based not-for-profit community project Kerry Food Hub - the vision of local farmer David Gleeson - made the announcement on Friday as Martin Heydon TD turned the sod. The Firies based centre - which was established in 2016 and has enjoyed one hundred percent uninterrupted occupancy since opening - will now grow from four 1,000sq ft units employing 35 people to 14, 1,000sq ft units, delivering the growth in jobs from a €2m Enterprise Ireland investment. The development of a B2B Artisan Marketplace online platform will also link artisan producers with buyers in 4-star and 5-star hotels and restaurants in Killarney, one of the highest tourist footfall locations in the country. “This major investment in the local economy signifies confidence within the indig-

Killarney hospitality avoids worst of water shortage crisis The Killarney hospitality sector avoided the worst of the water shortages that affected thousands in the county following a major water break from Lough Guitane Water Treatment Plant to Sheheree Reservoir on the Central Regional Water Supply Scheme on Tuesday night. As the Killarney Advertiser closed for press yesterday evening (Thursday), the water supply was slowly coming back to normal in the areas most-affected by the burst. Kerry County Council placed mobile water tankers in several of these
areas including the Rock Road Car Park, Fossa School, Firies Church Yard and Farranfore GAA grounds and Barraduff Community Centre. These will remain in place until supply has been fully restored to all areas. Irish Water are slowly refilling the Sheheree Reservoir and releasing water back into the network in a controlled manner to avoid further rupturing pipes due a sudden increase in pressure. An estimated 50,000 homes and businesses were affected by the breakage - but the biggest impact was felt in Tralee. Killarney Hotels and bars escaped the worst of the crisis.
Bernadette Randles, chair of the Kerry Branch of the Irish Hotel Federation said that Killarney Hotels were not affected by the breakage. The majority of Muckross Road hotels, including Ms Randles’ Dromhall Hotel are on the same pipeline. Her brother Thomas runs the Randles Court Hotel next door but is on a different water line and he did not suffer a break in his water supply either. “I woke up on Wednesday morning in fright,” she told the Killarney Advertiser. “Water is your worst nightmare, so much depends on it from guests’ showers to cooling equipment in the bars, cooking and washing. "This €2m investment will ensure the hub acts as a key source of employment within a local community that has experienced significant population growth but has lacked economic development.” Martin Heydon TD added that it was "another notable milestone as we move to a robust re-localised focus on food and the agriculture supply chain". "Digital transformation reshapes the market relationship by creating new bridges between independent local artisan food producers and buyers. Thomas next door was not affected and he is on a different line to us.” Special arrangements were made to ensure hospitals and nursing homes were not left without water during the repair work. Killarney's Vaccination Centre also remained operational throughout. Fianna Fáil’s Councillor Michael Cahill who has been highlighting the issue of interrupted water supply throughout Mid and South Kerry for years, has warned that the continuous water mains issue in the county could result in negative publicity for the tourism industry. “How can we expect visitors to return or recommend our county as a destination if their basic human needs are not met? Relief as indoor dining finally resumes
After almost 500 days of closures the sense of relief was evident this week as restaurants, cafés and bars were finally allowed to welcome customers back. | By Michelle Crean Some had reopened for outdoor dining previously to help keep their businesses afloat but it was back to normal on Monday. Killarney author Máire O'Leary, who penned 'Freewheeling to Love', said she has seen fantastic support from Irish libraries. Her book, which was released in February, is available in all Kerry libraries and in almost 60 libraries nationwide. "I am blown away by the support from libraries throughout Ireland," Máire said. "As a child I was a frequent visitor to Bantry Library and that is where my love of reading grew. I now love to visit Killarney Library with my boys. I feel libraries are special places that make reading assessable to all." 'Freewheeling to Love' is a contemporary cycling themed romance set in
Killarney, South Kerry and West Cork. After reading 'Freewheeling to Love" you would be forgiven for hopping on the computer to book your holiday in Killarney, she added. "It was described by one book blogger as a "love letter to Kerry" but it is so much more than that." Beautifully weaved through the cycling themed romantic drama are the deeper societal issues of consent, fertility, paternity, jealousy and mental health. All three lead characters Saoirse, Oisin and Donal have their strengths and vulnerabilities and at different stages of the story your love and loyalty to them may be tested. Máire is also really grateful to all the local Killarney retailers, the independent bookshops, in particular Eason, Eagers and O'Connors Killarney, and the international booksellers. "All you have to do now is Google it and you will find it anywhere in the world."

Glenflesk man whittles his way through lockdown What began as a hobby using fallen and storm damaged native trees during lockdown has turned into a successful business for one Glenflesk man. | By Michelle Crean Shane Dennehy is taking ‘working to live’ to a new level as his cottage business Anú Crafts takes shape throughout months of lockdowns, reopenings and COVID-19 restrictions. Shane is constantly inspired by the wonderful nature that surrounds him and is giving the fallen trees a new lease of life. As a young boy, he spent a lot of his time with his late dad Seán in his beloved shed, watching him cutting timber and tackling the limitless list of chores and work of a full-time farmer and father. His mother Betty, also loved working with her hands, so it wasn’t long before their children developed this passion too. Many years later, years spent crafting purely as a hobby, the birth of Shane’s beautiful goddaughter Michaela in 2013 led him to make a custom-made personalised doll's cradle for her playroom. When this was shared on social media by his sister Myra, numerous people fell in love with the cradles and contacted him to see if he could do the same for
their little ones! Before he knew it, he was inundated with requests for other bespoke crafted pieces. Following this demand, he used the precious hoard of timber slices that his late younger brother Denis cut for him many years previously, and had seasoned in his shed waiting for this day to come. Little did he know then, but Denis was producing timber for Shane’s business years before he even knew it himself. During lockdown Shane has had time to develop this hobby into a business and created, Anú Crafts Killarney so the memory of his beloved father and brother can live on through the gorgeous wooden craft creations.
INSPIRATION
"My family are certainly my inspiration in setting up Anú Crafts - my late brother Denis, who cut timber slices for me 15 years ago before I ever even thought about starting a business, my late father for passing on his huge work ethic, my sister Myra for pushing me to set up Anú Crafts and the support of

my loving mother and family," Shane this week told the Killarney Advertiser. "What I love most about my work is the delight I see in people's faces when they receive their personal woodcrafts. I love taking on custom-made personal commissions where people contact me looking for something very personal and touching to them or a loved one, but not
really sure what to do. But after talking it through with them, I get a feeling of the person and their story. And the delight on their faces with the end product is worth more than anything afterwards." NPWS survey to find out impact of fires | By Michelle Crean The National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) has commissioned a comprehensive survey on the impact of fires over the past four decades - in particular Killarney National Park in April.
DONATION: Daithi and Sheila McGillicuddy (right) presenting CUH Ward2 with €12,126, the proceeds of the Christmas Jumper Day by St Brendan's College, Killarney Community College, Presentation Monastery School and Holy Cross Mercy School to Anna Marie Ahern and Lucy McDonnell, Nurse Managers in Ward2 CUH, in memory of the late Niall McGillicuddy, with (front) Neil O'Shea, Eoghan O'Sullivan, Evan Looney, Ruaíri Doyle (centre row), Hugh Rudden (Deputy Principal St Brendan's College), Deirdre Doyle, Eliane Moynihan, Joanne O'Sullivan, and Ella Murphy. Back from left: Sean Coffey (Principal St Brendan's College), Kieran Herlihy, Padraig Looney, Emmett O'Shea, Michael Lenihan, Johanna Crowley, Ellen and Jane McGillicuddy at St Brendan's College, Killarney.
The tender, worth €300,000, and named 'Study on the Impact of Fires On The Biodiversity of Killarney National Park', seeks to find out the biological impacts of the fires in the 26,000 acre park. The fires in April burned from Friday night on April 23 until around 12pm the following Monday when they were finally brought under control. Parts of the Park were scorched resulting in flora and fauna being wiped out. Some fires came as close as 10 metres to
a church and school in the Black Valley area. Fires raged near Tomies Wood and fire crews from five different districts quenched fires near the properties under threat. A real threat was for The Oak Woods but fire fighters managed to avert danger. The fire is believed to have begun on the Kenmare Road area escalated by the strong winds. "The purpose of this tender is to commission a comprehensive survey of the impacts, and the chrono-sequence of fire recovery or otherwise, on lands burned over the past four decades, as well as surveys in unburned areas, in order to assess the biological impacts of the fires, in particular the fire of April 2021, on the biodiversity of Killarney National Park," an NPWS spokesperson told the Killarney Advertiser.

SUMMERTIME IS FLEADH TIME Summer for many parents is a time when they bring their children to the various Fleadhanna at County, Provincial and All-Ireland Level. The main attraction for a child when attending a Fleadh is not about winning the competition, but the opportunity to showcase their talents in public. To a large extent the buzz of attending a Fleadh, is about meeting old friends in new places and making new friends. There is no doubt the pandemic has interrupted the best laid plans for the holding Fleadh Cheoil Chiarraí in Milltown in 2020 and 2021, but hopefully, it will be back in 2022. However, regardless of the difficulties posed by the COVID-19 restrictions, doing nothing is just not an option for the hard working officers and volunteers in Kerry Comhaltas Ceolteoirí Eireann. They still managed to put together an impressive programme of events to
mark what would traditionally be the Fleadh weekend in Kerry on the third weekend in June. Firstly, they organised an art competition amongst the national schools which attracted a high level and standard of entries from throughout the county. Congratulations to Amy Mangan of Loughfouder National School (Knocknagoshel) who won the U9 competition, and Kate O'Neill of Scoil Nuachabháil (Ballymacelligot), who was successful in the U12 competition. There was an U15 category in art also and the winner was Cathal Fitzgerald, Scoil Eoin, Balluamhnach, Trá Lí. Secondly, members and non-members were asked to submit a history project about a local musician or tradition in
their area. Once again the standard of entries that were received was just fantastic and the organising team had great difficulty in arriving at their decisions. On this occasion the winners were Sean Fleming of Kilcummin in the U12 section with his project on the famous Sliabh Luachra accordion player Johnny O’Leary. The winner in the U15 competition was Maebh O'Leary of Ballyhar with her project on her grandfather, the late Denis McMahon, who was renowned in musical circles as 'The Man with the Hat'. Thirdly, Kerry CCE put together a family concert which was aired on YouTube on the Saturday night of the Fleadh weekend. A number of families from throughout the county entertained everybody with their music, song and dance with-
out having to leave home. The concert is still available to see on the Kerry CCE Facebook page and is well worth a look. And if all that wasn’t enough to keep people busy and entertained, FleadhFest Chiarraí was also launched to the public on the week of June 17 to 21 to coincide with the annual Fleadh Cheoil Chiarraí. It is a series of five specially produced programmes which showcase our musicians, singers, dancers, poets, storytellers, sporting heroes, an Ghaeilge, our cultural centres and our archive footage to a global audience. These programmes are available to view now on our Kerry Comhaltas YouTube channel, Kerrycomhaltas Facebook page and Kerrycomhaltas.ie.

GARDEN MAGIC
Gardening - By Debby Looney

Consider planting topiary trees The fantastic spell of long overdue sunshine certainly brought out the best in our flowering plants. It seemed that, for the first time this year, geraniums were blooming as they should be! That has been the experience in my garden ... I hope you have had more luck! However, some plants have exhausted themselves. I have pulled all the nemesias, lobelias and marigolds out of my pots – harsh maybe, but given the weather forecast and dire predictions of rain, I feel these plants will not recover in time for a second blooming. With many baskets, pots and borders looking a bit woebegone, many people wonder whether it is still worth putting in summer plants? Well, a quick fix if you need it, is always the geranium. You will still get plenty of pleasure out of geraniums, busy lizzies and begonias – they will last until the first frosts. However, if you are looking for something which is long lasting and will take you through the winter, consider an alternative such as topiary trees. Lollipops are very practical, they are an easy shape to maintain and look well whether they are underplanted with seasonal plants, or whether the look is completed with decorative stones. Plants grown as lollipop trees include euonymus, bay tree, Buxus, conifers, photinias, or holly trees. Many flowering plants are also shaped into small standards, for example miniature Roses, rosemary and fuchsia.
OPTIMUM HEALTH
Cone shaped topiary is also popular, again Buxus are low maintenance and very affordable. Spiral and stepped lollipops are also interesting choices but require more maintenance to keep them
in the correct shape. Buxus plants can be susceptible to blight, keep an eye out for it and spray on time with a Buxus health tonic. It is vital to keep your Buxus in optimum health, ensure it does not dry out and that it is well fed, preferably with a specialist feed. Buxus are also very prone to white fly, which causes considerable damage to plants. It is easy to spot, however, usually you will notice a white webbing, or a cloud of white particles if you brush against the plant. These particles are actually the tiny white fly. Again, they are easily killed using an appropriate spray, or even soapy water - the important thing is to catch them early.
ALL-PURPOSE FOOD
If you are hoping to keep your pots looking good until the end of autumn, make sure to keep feeding regularly. I recommend an all-purpose food rather than tomato food, which is the popular choice. An all-purpose food, such as Miracle Gro or Phostrogen, keeps the whole plant healthy from root to tip as opposed to tomato food which really only forces flowering at the expense of all else. It causes plants to push themselves to flower, creating exhaustion much sooner than is necessary. A problem this year, I think due to the beautiful weather, is caterpillars. Unfortunately, the damage is often done before you realise you’ve had visitors, but if you do see the caterpillars on time, it is easy to pick them off. Alternatively, a product such as Provado Bug Killer or the excellent organic product ‘Grazers' will kill them.

Outdoor drinking laws Question: What has changed in the law on drinking outdoors? ANSWER: The law on drinking outdoors was recently changed to clarify that pubs and restaurants can serve alcohol to customers who are seated in ‘designated areas’ outside the premises. Pubs and restaurants had been unable to open for indoor service until this week due to COVID-19 restrictions. Local authorities have permitted outdoor seating in designated outdoor areas, but, previously, it was illegal to serve alcohol in those areas. There has been no change to the laws about drinking outside in public places that are not ‘designated areas’ of a licensed premises. Drinking outdoors is not prohibited in general, but local authorities have bye-laws that don’t allow drinking in some or all public places. If you are drinking in public and behaving in a way that could cause worry for safety, the Gardaí can confiscate your alcohol. They can also confiscate alcohol if it is being drunk by a person under 18, or if they have cause to believe that it will be consumed by a person under 18. bottle or can) within 100 metres of the off-licence where it was sold. The law does not forbid a pub from delivering drinks to people’s homes, or stop customers from bringing drinks home. It is also an offence to be so drunk in a public place that you could reasonably be assumed to be a danger to yourself or to anyone around you. _________________________________________________ During COVID-19, you can find comprehensive integrated information online at citizensinformation.ie/covid19/ and you can get daily updates on what’s changed on Twitter at @citizensinfo. Olympic Gold for Ireland at Tokyo 2020 Irish Olympic fans woke up to great news yesterday morning (Thursday) to hear that Ireland has secured a gold medal. Paul O’Donovan and Fintan McCarthy delivered Olympic gold to Ireland in a dramatic race in the lightweight men's double sculls. It was the first ever gold medal for Ireland in Rowing. O’Donovan and his brother Gary won the silver in the same event five years ago in Rio de Janeiro. O'Donovan has become the first Irish athlete to win Olympic gold and silver medals and his rowing partner Fintan McCarthy won an Olympic gold on his debut. They also became the first Irish male gold
medallists since boxer Michael Carruth at 1992's Barcelona Games. After the pair were presented with their Olympic gold medals, the tricolour was raised high for the first time in nine years at an Olympic medal ceremony. Rowers McCarthy and O'Donovan beat Germany by just 0.86 seconds at the Sea Forest Waterway. "I didn't think about too much how I felt at the time, so it's difficult to compare it from five years after," O’Donovan said. "Winning today and silver medal last time, I'll be a bit happier about that. The silver medal is nice but Fintan did the right job and we went straight to the top at his first Games. The two boys [Germa-
ny] have been looking strong all week and made us really work hard. Italy were quick off the start and didn't let us have it easy." Back home in Skibbereen, County Cork, McCarthy's father Tom told RTE: "It's so overwhelming. Absolutely delighted. They've worked so hard and they were pushed and they delivered and it's amazing." And mum Sue said: "There are no words to describe it. Pride just doesn't cover it it is so much more than that." Other Irish success went to Aifric Keogh, Eimear Lambe, Fiona Murtagh and Emily Hegarty who took bronze in women’s fours in rowing the previous day.
Cockatoo learns to open bins Scientists have found evidence of social learning in birds, and the proliferation of a bin-opening technique suggests that those who can quickly pass information have a significant advantage. A Sydney scientist first spotted a sulfur-crested cockatoo accessing his rubbish bin a few years back. Although not everyone in the community will be pleased, ornithologist Richard Major was delighted by the resourcefulness. To grip a bin lid with its beak, pry it open, then move far enough down the bin's edge that the lid falls backward, revealing
delicious riches inside, is quite an accomplishment. Major was intrigued, so he teamed up with German researchers to see how many cockatoos had picked up the technique. Birds in three Sydney neighbourhoods have learned the innovative foraging strategy, according to a poll of homeowners conducted in early 2018. Birds were lifting bins in 44 areas by the end of 2019. “From three suburbs to 44 in two years is a pretty rapid spread,” said Major, who is based at the Australian Museum.
After analysing videos of 160 of the clever birds lifting bin lids, and, by assessing the geographic spread, they decided most birds learned by watching others. “That spread wasn’t just popping up randomly. It started in southern suburbs and radiated outwards,” he said. The birds that mastered the trick also tended to be dominant in social hierarchies. “This suggests that if you’re more socially connected, you have more opportunities to observe and acquire new behaviour and also to spread it,” Planck Institute behavioural ecologist, Barbara Klump, said.
Toddler's creepy doll obsession goes viral A video of a two-year-old child from Toronto has gone viral in days with over 9m views online for her love of creepy dolls! It was love at first sight for Parker Eckstein when she spotted Dolly in the Halloween section at Walmart last year, according to mom Kourtni on the TikTok video. Parker is shown brunching with Dolly, singing her to sleep, and pushing her in a swing, and when Dolly is in a car, Parker insists on it being properly strapped up. “I turned around and Parker was standing there with this creepy doll and she wouldn’t put it down,” Kourtni said. “I was like, ‘Whatever. I’ll buy it for her. She’ll get over it in a day'." While it's not the only toy doll she plays with, it's the only one who never leaves her side. One of her videos with the doll has gained over 8.7 million views on TikTok and over 1 million views on Facebook bringing in a lot of attention on the unique friendship.

Pink to pay Norway's beach handball fine American superstar Pink has offered to pay Norway's beach handball team's fine of €1,500 for wearing bicycle shorts instead of bikini bottoms during a European championship match.
FUN: Kevin O’Callaghan, Chairperson of Ballybunion Development Company pictured with the Cathaoirleach of the Listowel Municipal District, Cllr Mike Kennelly, showing off the newly installed equipment in Ballybunion.
New Ballybunion street exercise area There'll be plenty of fun in Ballybunion over the coming months as an outdoor street exercise area has been installed. Ballybunion Development Committee and Kerry County Council have worked together on the project and also developed an inclusive upgrade to the existing playground in the north Kerry town. The works were funded by the Department of Children and Youth Affairs (2020 Programme) in the amount of €3,750 towards an inclusive upgrade of the existing playground and €7,802 from the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media under the Sports Capital and Equipment Programme towards Outdoor Adult Ex-
ercise Equipment in Ballybunion. Kerry County Council’s Community Department and Listowel Municipal District supplemented these grants through the Community Support Fund. Ballybunion Development Committee generously contributed €6,000 towards the project giving an overall budget of €35,000 for the works. “An outdoor summer combined with a state-of-the-art facility like this complements the many attractions that Ballybunion has to offer its visitors and locals alike," Kevin O’Callaghan, Chairperson of Ballybunion Development Company, said. "Exercise, fitness, beaches and scenic walks makes for a very enjoyable day out."
The European Handball Federation dubbed the women's team's outfit "improper clothing" after they chose to wear shorts instead of the required "close fit" bikini bottoms in their bronze medal match against Spain. The uniform guidance reads: "Athletes' uniforms and accessories contribute to helping athletes increase their performance as well as remain coherent with the sportive and attractive image of the sport. Female athletes must wear bikini bottoms with a close fit and cut on an upward angle towards the top of the leg". On Twitter, singer Pink said she was willing to pay for the team's penalty, which was €150 per player. "I’m very proud of the Norwegian female beach handball team for protesting the very sexist rules about their 'uniform'," she wrote. "The European Handball Federation should be fined for sexism. Good on ya,
ladies. I'll be happy to pay for your fines. Keep it up." The EHF's decision to penalise the team met with criticism from Norwegian Sports Minister Abid Raja, who described it on Twitter as "completely ridiculous", saying the sporting body did not understand equality. He thanked Pink for her offer and said a letter was sent to all Nordic sports ministers for a joint statement "to support our women". The team wrote on Instagram: "Thank you so much for all the support. We really appreciate all the love we have received".
Underwater world with volcano discovered At 10,170 feet below sea level, an underwater world resembling Middle Earth from The Lord of the Rings has been discovered near Australia, complete with a massive 'Eye of Sauron' volcano. And two other seafloor structures resembling the evil realm of Mordor were also found. The desolate landscape was discovered by scientists while exploring the Indian Ocean about 174 miles southeast of Christmas Island. They came across the structure while onboard the ocean
research vessel 'Investigator' on the twelfth day of an expedition to Australia's Indian Ocean Territories when they used a multibeam sonar to create 3D maps of the caldera and the surrounding seafloor. Like other calderas, this one formed when the peak of the original volcano
collapsed, according to the researchers. "The molten magma at the base of the volcano shifts upwards, leaving empty chambers below," chief scientist Tim O'Hara, senior curator at Museums Victoria in Australia, wrote in 'The Conversation'. "The thin, solid crust on the surface of the dome then collapses, creating a large, crater-like structure." The area surrounding the volcanic crater was also home to two other structures. "Our volcanic 'eye' was not alone," O'Hara wrote.
"Further mapping to the south revealed a smaller sea mountain covered in numerous volcanic cones, and further still to the south was a larger, flat-topped seamount." The researchers named the cone-covered mountain Barad-dûr, after Sauron's main stronghold, and the seamount Ered Lithui, after the Ash Mountains. Both of these are found alongside the Eye of Sauron in the evil realm of Mordor. "It is possible that volcanoes have continued to sprout long after the original foundation. Our restless Earth is never still."

Focus on progress to reach your goal We recently posted some amazing transformations on our social media pages. It's not something we do much of, even though amazing transformations are happening all the time at Activate. There's a good reason we don't post them all the time, as they only tell a very tiny part of the story. Here's the thing; seeing a transformation photo is impressive, it's motivating, and it's a testament to the client's hard work. But between a 'before' and 'after' photo, there are a period of days, weeks, months, and years of effort, consistency, frustration, failures, successes, and hardships that you don't see. It's the boring stuff that won't sell magazines, diet books, or coaching programmes. It's the unsexy stuff - the day to day grind type stuff. But it matters. And that's where progress happens – in that unsexy, boring gap. It's saying no to an extra bowl of dessert. It's going to the gym even when you don't feel like going. It's reminding yourself daily of your goals and why you're making this change even when progress seems slow, and motivation has quietly slipped out the door. I'm reminded of a quote from Tucker Max that eloquently sums this up: "Let's say you want to win this archery trophy. That trophy is the most important thing to you. So how do you get it? You have to be good at archery first in order to hit the bullseye and ultimately get the trophy, right? And how do you get good at archery? By focusing on archery, not on the trophy. That's the paradox: you're so focused on
the outcome that you never learn to enjoy the process, which ultimately sets you up for failure. But if you focus on archery (the process), you're more likely to hit the target and win the trophy.
THE PROCESS
Focus on the process, and you'll reach your goal. Focus on the goal, and you'll compromise the learning process and ultimately come up short. Whether you win the trophy or not is irrelevant — the process is what matters." Meaning: Don't focus on the result instead, focus on the process that will move you towards becoming that person. And that's the paradox of goals: You can't achieve the end goal without first becoming the person who's capable of reaching the end goal. If you only ever focus on the outcome, you'll forever be disappointed and discouraged - no amount of progress will ever be good enough. Who cares if you've lost 5kgs, have more energy, and your clothes fit better? You really want to lose 20kgs, and nothing else matters. Instead of the before and after, focus on the gap between those two points - the day to day process. Put in the work, no matter how small. You do those things for a year - and that's how results happen. The proper guidance takes you from where you are right now to where you want to be in the most efficient manner possible. It shows you precisely what you need to do (and not do) to achieve your goal. If you are looking for guidance, we have a limited number of spaces available currently at Activate. €11k for footpath works A local councillor has awarded €3,000 from his Councillors Allocation to Kilcoolaght Residents Association. His amount, plus a previous amount from former councillor Michael Gleeson, brings the total for upgrading works to €11,000. "This money will be used primarily for the upgrading of footpaths, which are
in a deplorable condition," Cllr O'Donoghue, who said he was delighted to be in a position to do so, told the Killarney Advertiser. "When added to the €8,000 my predecessor Michael Gleeson has already allocated this year, it will bring our combined total up to €11,000 for the Daltons Avenue/Marian's Terrace Area in 2021."

Classic car run to ‘Help Rose Bloom’ campaign ‘Help Rose Bloom’ is the chosen charity for the 11th Ballymac Classic Car and Honda 50 run. Based at O’Riada’s Bar, Ballymac, the event will take place on August 8 and is organised by the Kingdom Vintage Veteran and Classic Car Club. Ahead of the run, a static ‘Cars ‘n Coffee’ event will be held the grounds of the bar between 10am and 12 noon. 'Help Rose Bloom' has been set up by the O’Flaherty family from Ballymac. Their daughter Rose was diagnosed with
Type 1 Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA1), a severe genetic condition that weakens muscles and causes problems with movement – when she was just ninemonths-old. SMA1 children typically have a life expectancy of just two years, but Rose has been defying medical odds ever since her diagnosis. “The local community has been raising funds to help her family gain access to vital medicines,” said KVCCC’s George Glover, who is one of the main organisers.

Killarney racers battered and bruised after weekend of spills Two Killarney motorcycle racers are nursing injuries after incidents while racing last weekend. Kevin Coyne will miss the next three rounds of the British Superbike Championship after crashing during qualifying for last weekend’s Brands Hatch event. He got caught out on a partially wet track while his bike was fitted with dry weather slick racing tyres. The incident launched him “high-side” off his bike and on landing he damaged his
right shoulder. He will be out of action for at least five weeks and is targeting the Snetterton round in early September for his return to the series. However, the accident will have an impact on his budget and he now needs a new racing suit, helmet and body flares for his Kawasaki Ninja if he is to continue in the championship. “On his fastest lap he just ran wide. Unfortunately slick tyres on a wet surface
don’t like each other. He got high-sided, but he is ok,” said his father Mark. “Kevin suffered some damage to the right shoulder which will put him out for four of five weeks but he will hopefully be back for Snetterton in September.” The team has put out a request for support in an effort to get them back on track. “With all that said and done, racing is expensive and after the crash we have to replace the suits and helmet with other

bike damages. So if anyone would like to help Kevin please feel free to get in touch,” added Mark. He can be contacted via email: markcoyne@ymail.com. Meanwhile, in Mondello Park over the weekend sidecar racer Siobhan Ardener tore ligaments in her right thumb during a “moment” in her second race. She and her driver, Fergus Woodlock, had already finished third in their opening event and were fighting for podium honours in race two when she nearly fell off the rear platform of the sidecar. “It was only a moment,” she said. “It can’t be classed as a motor racing incident as I did not come off.” They were forced to sit out their third and final race as a result of her injuries and issues with the bike’s steering and handling which are the suspected causes of the incident in the first place.

Applications now open for Liebherr's 2021 scholarship programme Liebherr is inviting applications from Leaving Certificate students and First Year electrical engineering, mechatronics and automation students, with tuition fees paid, summer work, college placements and graduate role among the benefits. Scholarship recipients for 2021 will join 13 mechanical/structural engineering students and two electrical engineering students already in receipt of Liebherr scholarships. They will have their college fees paid for the duration of their course and the additional benefits of being able to complete work experience during summer holidays and college placements throughout the course terms. The Liebherr Engineering Scholarship Programme for 2021 provides a unique opportunity for Leaving Certificate and First Year college students to gain a third level qualification, and a wealth of experience in electrical engineering or automation, with the opportunity to continue employment with Liebherr on graduation.
RECENT GRADUATES
Ciara Dennehy and Darragh O’Connell are recent graduates of the programme
and now work full-time with Liebherr as graduate Automation Engineers. Ciara, a Manufacturing and Mechatronic Engineering graduate from Munster Technological University, explained her experience of the programme. “The scholarship programme has offered me a great amount of support and resources. With the promise of summer work each year and placement it allowed me to better dedicate myself to my studies. It is great benefit, when you can see in practice, how the theory that you study in class is applied in industry. Now that I am working as an Automation Engineer, it is clear to see how well this programme has prepared me for this role and just how innovative Liebherr is. We are continuously developing new ground-breaking systems and software.” Darragh, armed with his degree in electronic computer engineering from Na-

tional University of Ireland, Galway, echoed these sentiments. “It was a real benefit during my studies. Now that I have graduated I am able to continue working with Liebherr as an Automation Engineer."
INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY
“Development of our products and systems is taking place at a rapid pace and with this in mind, we are looking for the best and brightest future engineers to join us as part of the Liebherr Engineering Scholarship Programme," Charlie McCarthy, Managing Director, Engineering at Liebherr Container Cranes, said. "We offer the chance to work with our engineers on the further development of automation, remote control, self-diagnostics, 5G communication protocols and condition monitoring systems. In addition, sustainability is a key consideration for our customers, so our engineers
also get to work on the development of hybrid, battery and alternative power systems. We develop all of these technologies in-house and the next few years will bring many exciting developments. At Liebherr, we give prospective engineers the opportunity to put their college learnings into practice and this is fundamental to their development and education.”
HOW TO APPLY
Interested candidates should apply by email to recruitment.lcc@liebherr.com. Applicants should include a CV detailing Leaving Certificate/Junior Certificate/ college projects and/or results and a cover letter explaining why they have chosen electrical engineering as a career path. Big Tech to the rescue WEEK IN REVIEW
Stocks trended downwards early in the week despite positive earnings reports as rising COVID-19 cases, inflation and economic growth all weighed on investor sentiment.
CHINA
Panic selling gripped Chinese stocks early in the week as fears over a regulatory crackdown by the Chinese Government continued to mount. Although the sell-off centred around a new set of restrictions on Chinese for-profit tutoring companies, it's the latest example of the communist party's unwavering ability to destroying shareholder value with an unexpected decision. China's largest tech names have all recorded significant losses in recent months. Alibaba, China's largest e-commerce company, has now seen its market cap fall by over 300 billion dollars since its market highs set back in October.

The mega-cap tech companies continued to produce mind-boggling revenue numbers this week. Apple, Alphabet and MiTO LET: Rooms to rent in Tralee town. crosoft all reported record quarters after the closing bell on Tuesday, with a combined profit of $57 billion in Q2, which equates to $626 million a day. Google's parent company, Alphabet, was particularly noteworthy, with advertising revenue up 69% year over year. YouTube alone generated $7 billion in revenue for the quarter. While it's easy to look at record high numbers in the stock market and assume a bubble, record earnings figures and improving fundamentals from the biggest hitters in the index will continue to act as a support, justifying further gains.
BITCOIN BOUNCE
The major crypto names experienced a late-night surge on Sunday, with bitcoin now sitting at a six-week high just below $40,000. Bullish comments last week from the tech trio of Elon Musk, Jack Dorsey, and Cathie Wood spurred the recent positive sentiment. The outlook has been boosted further by the news that Amazon may accept cryptocurrency payments - by the end of the year. While early reports are vague and 10 minutes’ drive from Killarney. STOCK WATCH
Snap Inc jumped a colossal 24% last Thursday after reporting its biggest growth quarter in four years. Snap's next significant growth opportunity appears to be in the AR space. The company has invested heavily in Augmented Reality and is looking to change the e-commerce experience by allowing those shopping online to "try on" clothing using its AR technology. I’m listening. While revenue more than doubled to $982 million in Q2 2021 and the AR tech offers significant growth opportunities, valuations appear stretched, to say the least. For me, Snap Inc. will need to show an ability to turn its lower-income younger users into paying customers and turn big revenue gains into realised profits before the current market cap is justified.

in the fight against the Wall Street elite, Robinhood has fast become the poster child of the retail investor revolution. As such, its IPO this week was always guaranteed to generate a lot of interest. With almost 18 million active users, $80 billion in AUM and revenue close to $1 billion last year's Robinhood makes for a compelling investment opportunity, but with a predicted valuation of $35 billion, much of the juice may have already been squeezed by the private market before it becomes available to the public. While I'm skeptical in the long run, especially with the majority of earnings coming from the sale of order flows, this IPO will undoubtedly generate a lot of interest over the near term. Give your feet some attention Longer brighter evenings mean our feet are either exposed in sandals or we're going barefoot - so what better time than to treat the feet! Why not soak your feet in our American style pedicure chair with built-in back massager and Jacuzzi jet foot spa which are super strong and really helps to soften the hard, rough skin. We use a peppermint and tea tree foot soak, which is very refreshing and antiseptic. We exfoliate the foot and leg up to the knee. The extra hard rough skin is then filled down with either a foot rasp or drill followed up with nail cutting and shaping. The cuticle is then pushed back and nipped. When the nails and hard skin are done we massage the leg and foot for a feeling of pure bliss. After the full pedicure procedure is performed we finish off with the nail paint using base coat, OPI
nail polish two coats, and a top coat to seal it all in. Or if you are looking for a Shellac/gelish gel polish finish that can be done instead of the OPI. Your feet will feel amazing after all that pampering and you will feel like you're walking on air. It's essential to look after your feet. Having toe nails cut professionally will prevent ingrown toenails and any damage that may be caused over time. If you are a diabetic, it is essential to have someone look after your feet correctly. We also treat corns, thickened toenails and calluses. When booking for these it is a foot health service you have to request. We usually follow this up with a pedicure either on the same day or a few weeks later to see how the progress is going. • Call Jill on 064 6632966 for more information or to make a booking.
a career change
There is nothing like a global pandemic to get us reflecting on all aspects of our lives, including our career. The last 18 months have challenged us in many ways and thrown up lots of questions about what is really important to us both personally and professionally. The vast majority of people have had to adapt to working from home and/or often working in a different way which brought both challenges and opportunities. A significant number of people are now opting for a more blended or hybrid model of working where this is facilitated by employers, as a means to achieving a better work-life balance. There has also been a noticeable increase in the number of people who have changed careers either because of necessity or because on reflection they feel that the job they have been doing is not giving the satisfaction, personal fulfilment or financial reward that they would like at this point in their career. Making a career transition or ‘pivot’ can be challenging and overwhelming, so before making any career move it is helpful to look at it as a three-step process. Bear in mind also that a change of position within your own organisation can be as good an option as a totally new start. The choice is yours.
THREE-STEP APPROACH
Start by looking at yourself, reflecting on your skills, competencies, strengths, interests, motivations, values and personality traits. Taking time to do this by yourself or with someone else will enable you to get a clearer picture of what you want from your career at this particular stage. If you go straight to a search of the jobs market you run the risk of settling for a job that doesn’t meet the career needs that you have right now or in the foreseeable future. Next, consider the practicalities which includes the kind of salary you want or need, the working hours and conditions, location and whether you need to do something to upskill or retrain in order to broaden your opportunities. This step also involves examining your

professional branding including updating your CV, looking at ways to improve your LinkedIn profile and presence on other social media networks. The third step is to start looking at what is out there in the jobs market ensuring that you keep in mind the career criteria you have established for yourself in the earlier part of the process. As part of this process think about all the people who are in your network and may be helpful to you as you make this career change. Start having career conversations with people you know and researching roles and organisations that sound interesting to you. As you start applying for roles you may need to work on your interview techniques to build your confidence to ensure that you present the best version of yourself in interview when you get called. Finally, allocate specific time to this journey of career transition and set goals that are SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Time-based) so that you hold yourself accountable throughout the process. There will be times where you find it difficult and get stuck, but committing to the process will be worth it.

7TH ANNIVERSARY
As we lovingly remember Fr. Peter on his First Anniversary, we wish to express our deep gratitude to those who attended his Funeral Mass and burial, those who phoned us, sent Mass cards and letters. Fr Peter was ordained to the priesthood in All Hallows’ College, Dublin in 1959. All of his ministry was spent in Salford Diocese until his retirement from him to Nazareth Home, Prestwich, Manchester. His family would like to thank the management and all the staff of this Home for the wonderful care, love, kindness and respect they gave Fr Peter over the years. Also, we would like to thank all who visited him there and, in particular, Barbara Lupton, who kept in touch with us always but especially in the latter months when we were unable to visit due to Covid restrictions. Thank you to Canon Michael Cooke for celebrating such a beautiful and meaningful Mass for Fr Peter. Sincere appreciation to Funeral Undertaker, Mr Paul Williams and his staff for being so understanding and arranging lovely music, flowers etc and especially for doing a video of the service and sharing it with us. To anyone who helped in any way, please accept this acknowledgment as a sincere expression of our gratitude. The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass has been offered for your intentions.

Those we love don’t go away they walk beside us each day Unseen, unheard but always near so Loved, So missed, So very dear.
PRAYER TO ST. JOSEPH O St. Joseph, whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt before the throne of God, I place in you all my interest and desires. O St. Joseph, do assist me by your powerful intercession, and obtain for me from your divine Son all spiritual blessings, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. So that, having engaged here below your heavenly power, I may offer my thanksgiving and homage to the most loving of Fathers. O, St. Joseph, I never weary contemplating you, and Jesus asleep in our arms; I dare not approach while He reposes near your heart. Press Him in my name and kiss His fine head for me and ask Him to return the kiss when I draw my dying breath. St. Joseph, Patron of departing souls pray for me. This prayer was found in the fiftieth year of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. In 1505 it was sent from the Pope to Emperor Charles when he was going into battle. Who ever shall read this prayer or hear it or keep it about themselves, shall never die a sudden death, or be drowned, nor shall be burned in any fire or shall be overpowered in battle. Say for nine mornings for anything you desire. It has never been known to fail, so be sure you really want what you ask for. In thanks for request granted.

One step closer to All-Ireland dream Adam Moynihan reports from a resplendent Fitzgerald Stadium as Kerry regained their Munster football crown and booked a place in the All-Ireland semi-final Midway through the first half in this provincial decider, Cork led by 1-5 to 0-3 and the supporters beneath me in red were fit to take the roof off the stand. The atmosphere was spine-tingling. Having predicted a heavy victory for Kerry just minutes earlier, I was now contemplating the unthinkable. Are we in trouble here? Kerry duly steadied the ship and went on to win by 22 points, the biggest ever margin of victory in a Munster final. Afterwards, when I told friends who had followed proceedings on TV of my ear-

HT: Kerry 1-12 | Cork 1-7 FITZGERALD STADIUM ly-match doubts, they scoffed. Evidently the tension and atmosphere in the stadium didn’t translate to the television screens. It just goes to show how much of a difference supporters can make to the energy and anxiety levels inside the ground. For a while there, 1,000 Cork fans (give or take) felt like 50,000. And Peter Keane and his players must have felt it too. To their great credit, the Kerry boys remained composed and when the outstanding Brian Ó Beaglaoich goaled in the 33rd minute, the tide had well and truly turned in Kerry’s favour. Cork won the first quarter by four points. They lost the second by nine, the third by twelve, and the fourth by five. Some travelling supporters headed for exits long before the final whistle. To paraphrase a line uttered by a Cork man when the tables were turned back in the late eighties, “after what happened last
year, we should have closed the gates and made them watch”.
PAUDIE CLIFFORD
Cork tore into Kerry from the throw-in (even slightly earlier than that, in fact) and with Brian Hurley proving a handful at full forward, they powered into a five-point lead. However, led by the irrepressible Paudie Clifford, Kerry edged back into the contest and points by Seán O’Shea, Tom O’Sullivan, David Moran, Jack Barry and Clifford himself had Kerry a point to the good with 29 minutes on the clock. Luke Connolly responded with a beauty to level matters but Ó Beaglaoich’s wondergoal was a dagger to Cork’s heart. Killian Spillane, who had replaced the injured Diarmuid O’Connor in the 18th minute, pointed to increase the lead and when O’Shea finished off a nice team move to make it a five-point game, the
early jitters were a distant memory. The third quarter was disastrous for the Leesiders as a flurry of Kerry scores, including two goals by Paul Geaney and one by O’Shea, completely killed the game as a contest. If you were told beforehand that David Clifford wouldn’t score from play, and register his only point from a free in the 61st minute, you probably wouldn’t have been too confident of a Kerry win. His teammates were dominant all over the pitch, however, and with older brother Paudie particularly electrifying, confidence within the camp, and within the county, is now higher than it has been for a very long time. Two more steps to go, starting with the winners of Tyrone and Monaghan in a fortnight’s time.
KERRY: Ryan; Ó Beaglaoich 1-0, Foley, T O’Sullivan 0-2; Breen 0-1, Murphy, White; Moran 0-1, O’Connor; O’Brien 0-1, O’Shea 1-6 (3f), Geaney 2-1; D Clifford 0-1 (1f), Barry 0-2, P Clifford 0-3. Subs: K Spillane 0-2 for O’Connor (18), Walsh 0-1 for O’Brien (temp 45-57), G O’Sullivan for Ó Beaglaoich (temp 53-58), Burns for D Clifford (temp 55-58), A Spillane for Barry (56), Walsh for Geaney (57), Crowley for T O’Sullivan (63), Morley 0-1 for White (65). Paudie Clifford on the effort it took to graduate from the juniors to the seniors
A lot of hard work. A lot of days in the gym and a lot of days out kicking. But the Kerry juniors is a great stepping stone Adam Moynihan took to Twitter to laud Paudie Clifford, whose username is comprised of the words ‘can’t guard Paud
You actually @cantguardpaud. Clifford feels as though the team is moving well at present
The unity, the standard at training, everything just seems to be clicking so far. Obviously, we have to keep it going, we’re nowhere near there yet. But there’s a great buzz at training
Irish Times columnist and ex-Kerry midfielder Darragh Ó Sé singing the praises of centre forward Seán O’Shea
I think he would make a super midfielder but you could also have him as a leader of the team from centre back. He reminds me of Séamus Moynihan in that regard. But you combine that with his scoretaking – which sometimes reminds me of Maurice Fitzgerald – and you have a huge asset in the Kerry team Former Kerry player and Sunday Game analyst Tomás Ó Sé has been very impressed with newcomer Paudie Clifford
I think he should be in there the last three years… He has that bit of steel, that bit of class in him. He can pick out a kick pass from way out, he creates more than anything but you can catch him anywhere, even his own defence. He has a low centre of gravity, takes it out of trouble any time he wants. I do think he has been overlooked by that management the last three years

Lessons from The Fitzgerald Stadium is the place to be on a Sunday afternoon in mid-July, not just any Sunday, but the Sunday of the Munster football final between neighbouring counties, arch-rivals Kerry and Cork. They are the greatest of friends all year round because they have so much in common and sure half the Kerry babies were born in the Erinville and later in the CUJ, before Kerry General Hospital was opened. Talk of the parish rule conundrum, when you cross the county bounds. But for all that friendship it is suspended - not ended - for about two hours in mid-July.
HEAVENLY VIEWS
One thing never changes and I got in very early ahead of the 4pm throw-in to savour that thing. I have been to sports grounds and arenas all over Ireland, all attractive in their own ways, but nothing compares to the panoramic view from the Terrace. Give us a few bars Sinéad O’Connor. Great to be back again to savour the view from the terrace at the Fitzgerald Stadium. A panorama view commences way off to my right with Carrantuohill, the highest mountain in Ireland, shoving its head above the other peaks of the MacGillicuddy Reeks range, sweeping down
to lower levels. The Pugin inspired St Mary’s Cathedral reminds me of the faith of our ancestors, who gave their pennies in 1840, when pennies were scarce and so too was food. This place of worship was and is so important in the lives of locals and visitors. The Great Famine took so many lives, but once the survivors of Black ‘47 had buried their dead, they donated more pennies. Eyes pan to the left and you feel that you could see climbers on Mangerton mountain and reach out to the Punch Bowl, such is the clarity on this heavenly Sunday afternoon. On to the Paps (of Anu) with a holding brief on the county bounds. Magical. Spiritual. “Nobody told me there could be days like this,” said Van the Man. The pitch is immaculate as 52 super-fit players engage in the pre-match optics, anything for a diversion from the prematch nerves. Then there is a retinue of other management and officials that seems to be growing all the time.
MANAGERS
Focus on Peter Keane and Ronan McCar-
thy, the respective team managers. It is a big day for both, critical in fact. Lose this game and it is only a matter of time before your term on the hot seat is over. It’s a cruel call for amateurs doing their best from a demanding public. Kerry won five minor All-Irelands in a row and Peter Keane managed two of these. Now he has the pick of the crop coming into their prime as senior players. He took over the seniors in 2019; they should have beaten Dublin at the first attempt, but they didn’t. November 2020 was strange as Cork came with that Late, Late Show goal, dumping Kerry in the Páirc Uí Chaoimh downpour. That hit himself and the players hard as the recriminations festered over Christmas. Tactics were all wrong and a poor Cork team couldn’t even beat Tipperary in the final. 2021 has shown great promise with Kerry unbeaten through the league, retaining the title, playing a great style of play and ramping up huge scores. Kerry football is on the up, a great minor and an U20 team just edged out by a point. It’s looking good, but Peter Keane knows only too well that no matter how attractive the 2021 style is, the demanding Kerry supporters will only settle for one thing: beating Dublin in the final. They don’t even think of Kildare, Tyrone and Monaghan. Knock the Dubs off their
perch and bring Sam home to The Kingdom. It’s a short road and no bail-out. Winner takes all. So far, so good. Tipperary was the expected canter in Thurles. Today it’s Cork in Killarney. Win that, take Monaghan or Tyrone in two weeks’ time and face the Dubs on August 29th.Managing the Kerry team is a tough and thankless job. The guillotine would have fallen on Ronan McCarthy if Cork had lost last November, the end of his three-year reign. That late goal earned him a reprieve. If they lose to Kerry today I expect the P45 to be issued and John Cleary (Castlehaven) to take up the poisoned chalice.
LESSONS TO BE LEARNED
What did we learn from the 22-point mauling of Cork on Sunday last, the highest since 1919? Everyone makes mistakes and the Kerry management team got it all wrong last November by opting for a defensive strategy, allowing Cork to dictate tactics, thus depriving Kerry of its trump card (forwards). Full credit to Keane and co., in 2021 they have learned from their mistakes and have been rectifying matters. Lesson one. Now we have a team that is set out to play to its strengths, working hard, getting the ball in quickly to the forwards, who are all capable of scoring

Munster final freely. 12 Kerry players scored 4-22 on Sunday last, a record for a Munster final. It is no wonder to me that they are in control of all games and shooting out the lights. They are imposing their game on all oppositions. I am not just thinking of the first six forwards selected; there are great forward options on the bench. Not quite so for defenders. SUPER FIT Lesson two. Kerry are superbly fit and conditioned better that any other team, as good as and probably better than even Dublin. That is why I had no concerns when Cork raced into that five-point lead after Hurley’s well-taken goal. The big field in the big games facing them in Croker won’t faze them. Neither will extra-time, if the teams are deadlocked.
a brilliant minor and it took him quite a bit to reproduce the same level in senior ranks. He has been brilliant in 2021, scoring goals and points at will. I am delighted to see him nominally at centre-forward, but playing much nearer the goal. What a pair operating as a two-man full forward line close to goal in the scoring zone. And the big plus is the form of the older Clifford. He may be in the full forward line, but with his stamina he can rove way out to midfield and even further. Paudie is tenacious, very sure on the ball, using Route 1 to goal with his defence-splitting runs. He gives a great pass and is well able to score himself when the opportunity arises. What’s more he is well disciplined.
THE CLIFFORD BROTHERS
Will Kerry win the All-Ireland this year and shut up the boasting Dub for once and for all? I don’t know how many times I have been asked that question by the proud, but exasperated Kerry fraternity. We’re getting there, but add the caveat: we’re not there yet. The above mentioned lessons are a great start, but there are more to learned. The defence has improved, but is still not tight enough. Its primary function is to defend and to be able to cope with a runner coming off the shoulder, gallop-
Lesson three. A big plus is the form of the Clifford brothers. We know the match-winning potential of superstar David, even if he only scored one point from a free on Sunday last. Credit Seán Meehan for doing a great marking job. That’s the downside of stardom. David will be doubly marked every day, but that gives more room and leeway to the rest of the forwards to get the scores. They are up for it, all of them, as they proved versus Cork. Seán O’Shea was
ALL–IRELAND
ing through the middle, especially when a high ball has been sent goalwards. You can’t be relying on Paudie Clifford to bail you out all the time. Look at Hurley’s goal. He was out about 40 yards from goal collecting the pass ahead of Jason Foley. The latter was turned too easily and the inevitable goal followed. It is worth coaching Foley in full back play. He is still the best bet. He is a good player, with good physique and has pace. However he was skinned for Cork’s goal, but his backs must also be alert to all possibilities. I was critical of Brian Ó Beaglaoich in the past for going up field into the forward area, too often at the expense of his defensive duties. He was outstanding last Sunday, Kerry’s best defender and sallied up the field just once, when it was judicious to do so scoring a great goal in the 33rd minute. Gavin White goes on his lung–bursting runs only a few times and causes havoc in the opposition’s defence, as happened on one occasion against Cork. Great to see captain Paul Murphy back, even if he made the cardinal error of going upfield, was turned over near the Cork goal and they came straight down the field to score from this mistake. Cork did very well at midfield especially when the injured Diarmuid O’Connor
had to go off after 19 minutes. Jack Barry, his clubmate from Na Gaeil, did very well operating as a wing forward-cum-midfielder. Great and all a servant as David Moran has been over many years for Kerry, he would not be on my starting 15, but definitely on the sheet of 26. I continue to be impressed by debutant Mark Breen. He proved his worth in the very demanding Sigerson. He is my choice for centre back in the future and I believe that future is not too far away. THE KICKOUT Finally, on the learning curve from Sunday last is the importance of the kickout. It was one of the key strategies in Stephen Cluxton leading Dublin to historic success. Shane Ryan was far too ponderous and hesitant with the kickouts on Sunday last and he sent some over the sidelines. In fairness to the Rathmore man, far too often no defender showed for the ball and he was forced to send it long where Cork were winning. Proper coaching and understanding between goalkeeper and the backs will reap rich dividends, especially if there are problems at midfield. You must win your own kickouts, the first line of attack and once Kerry get up field smartly, the cup handle will not seem that far away. Some lessons yet to be learned before The Canister comes home.

will fancy themselves to win their final group phase match against bottom-ofthe-table Beaufort. Legion travel back west to play An Ghaeltacht in Gallarus. Beaufort have already been relegated to Division 2 for 2022 on the back of four consecutive defeats and they will be joined in D2 by the bottom-placed team in Division 1A. Kilcummin currently occupy that position but they can claw their way out of danger with a final day victory over Austin Stacks. The second-from-bottom team in each pool will also meet in a playoff to decide the third and final team to be relegated to Division 2. These places will go
In the second division, Castleisland Desmonds can secure their promotion back to the top table by defeating Na Gaeil in their final fixture, thereby securing top spot in Division 2A. It’s all to play for in 2B as Templenoe, Gneeveguilla and Ballymacelligott are joint top on six points apiece. The runners-up in both pools will also play each other to decide the third team to be promoted with Glenbeigh-Glencar and St Mary’s in contention in 2A. They will duke it out for that final spot when they meet in Glenbeigh on Saturday; in fact, the winners will secure automatic promotion if Desmonds lose to Na Gaeil
Crokes currently lead the way in Division 1A with seven points from four matches, with Spa one point behind having won two, drawn one and lost one of their four fixtures to date. The new competition structure, which was devised to reduce the amount of games and travel required for all teams involved, sees the top team from each pool (1A and 1B) meet in the decider. In the other pot, Kerin’s O’Rahilly’s are favourites to finish first as they currently sit on top of the pile with seven points. The Killarney Legion are still in contention – they find themselves just one point behind in second – but Rahilly’s

in Tralee. The Dr Crokes B team are currently facing the chop as they sit bottom of 2A on zero points, but they can avoid automatic relegation by beating the team directly above them (Ballydonoghue) away from home on Sunday. Listry can do likewise in 2B if they can get the better of Dromid Pearses in Listry. If Crokes and Listry do the needful, they will meet in a relegation playoff to see who will retain their Division 2 status. Churchill and Listowel lead the way in Division 3A with Laune Rangers, Milltown/Castlemaine and Brosna in the running in 3B. Glenflesk are safe but the same cannot be said of Currow, who will need to defeat St Senan’s to have any hope of avoiding the drop. Firies are in pole position in Division 4A with Renard and then Fossa gunning for top spot in 4B. Stacks B and Cordal are in pole position in Divisions 5A and 5B, and it’s all to play for in Division 6 as the B teams of Dingle, Firies, Fossa, Kenmare, Glenflesk and Rathmore, as well as the Dr Crokes C team and Tuosist, are all still in the mix for promotion. Full fixture list and tables can be found on the Kerry GAA website and across the Kerry GAA social media channels.
Crokes hurlers set for championship bow Sunday will be a momentous day for Dr Crokes GAA as the club’s hurlers are set to participate in the Kerry Senior Hurling Championship for the first time. The Crokes famously won the Intermediate in 2020 and after exercising their right to graduate to the top level, they
now face into the daunting task of negotiating the rough and tumble of the top tier. The Killarney club will take on four-time champions Abbeydorney in their first Group 1 pool game, with throw-in at Austin Stack Park at 1.30pm. O’Dorney are sure to provide a stern test; they reached the last four of last year’s com-
petition before exiting at the hands of eventual winners Kilmoyley. Two teams from each of the three groups will progress to the knockout phase. Crokes will be hoping that the likes of Kerry panelist Michael Lenihan and his brother Jack can lead the way on Sunday, while Kerry U20 footballer and ac-
complished soccer player Tom Doyle is also considered to be a real talent. Elsewhere in the Kerry SHC, champions Kilmoyley will get the defence of their title up and running against Ballyheigue (tonight at 7.30pm), and last year’s beaten finalists Causeway will do battle with St Brendan’s on Saturday at 7pm.

Glenflesk GAA Club pay tribute to Noel Lucey Noel Lucey, Curraglass, Glenflesk, who has died at the age of 82, had a life-long interest in sport. | By Pat Favier A native of Caragh Lake, Noel began his football life with the Glenbeigh/Glencar Club and later played with Laune Rangers and Mid-Kerry. A gentle and humble man, Noel was satisfied to allow his sporting prowess be testimony to his talent. Noel served his country, his county, his parish and his community as well as being an exemplary father to his five daughters. He joined the Irish Security Forces and served in aircraft maintenance with the Irish Air Corps. Fittingly his coffin was draped in the Irish Tricolour and the National Anthem was poignantly played by the Healy family both before and after the obsequies at Glenflesk church. Noel was proud to be part of the Air Corps team which won the All-Army Football Championship in 1961, an achievement which captured the attention of the Kerry selectors. His physique, fitness and competitive spirit impressed the sideline sages and led to his selection for various tournaments including one at Sean Treacy Park in Tipperary Town – ‘the hardest pitch in Ireland’ according to Noel.
The zenith of his football career came in 1962 when he was chosen as Kerry’s centre-back for the victorious Munster and All-Ireland Finals with his brother Jimmy at centre-field. Subsequently Noel’s career took him to London. During his time there he captained the London county team which famously defeated Cork in the All-Ireland Junior Championship of 1966. Noel returned to Kerry, this time to Glenflesk, where he met and married Mary Shine. With his keen interest in athletics he became a leader in the promotion of Community Games in the parish. He travelled to various parts of the country as coach to several Track and Field athletes – his five daughters showing exceptional talents in many events. Noel’s sporting interests extended to horse and greyhound racing, and he had been eagerly anticipating the start of the Olympic Games. As the poet Hopkins described his friend, Noel too was "Big-boned and hardy-handsome, Powerful amongst peers". Noel was laid to rest at Aghadoe Cemetery on Wednesday last (July 21), beside his wife Mary.
Poem By Seamus Healy
His name it is Noel Lucey, Son of Maureen and Con, Here’s a little tribute, To tell you what he won.
Kerry County Board extended their sympathies The Kerry GAA extended its deepest sympathies to the family of the late Noel Lucey. Noel played for Kerry in 1962 and 1963. He was an integral part of the 1966 London team to defeat Cork in the Junior Championship. Noel had the distinguished honour of captaining and managing Laune Rangers in the 1971 County Championship. Noel was also heavily involved in the Glenflesk GAA Club. “We are thinking of his daughters, extended family and friends at this sad time,” the County Board said. “Ar Dheis Dé go raibh a Anam.”
Honours and medals, The Luceys had a few, He won the Sam beside Jimmy, In 1962. Vincent, Noel and Jimmy, Yes that's right all three, Lined out in the green and gold, In 1963. A sportsman true and true, Noel always wanted more, He made his way to London, In 1964. And when it came to football, He was always in the mix, He won a junior championship with London, In 1966. Returned back to Caragh lake, They thought his work was done, He captained Rangers in the championship, In 1971. Noel worked as a welder, Not a man for a desk, He played again in '72, Before moving to Glenflesk. Struck with grief when Brendan passed, And Jimmy only 29, Then lost his brother Vincent, And his sweetheart Mary Shine. He lost his brother Paul, Youngest Lucey and best mate, Who captained Kerry Juniors, In 1968. Reared five daughters as best he could, As any dad would do, And once again was struck with grief, When he lost Linda too.
SPORTING LEGEND: Noel with his five daughters; Deirdre O’Connell, Sandra Lucey, Linda Eviston (RIP), Karen Lucey and Aine Keogh on the occasion of his 70th birthday.
Now he's in a better place, And free from any pain, Rest in Peace Noel Lucey, Until we meet again.

30.7.2021 SPORT NOTES B welcomed Duagh to Lewis Road in the penultimate round. In a must win game for the Crokes, some fine displays of hurling were on view in blistering heat and sunshine. Crokes dominated the early stages and led by a couple of points early on. But a Duagh goal closed the gap at the first water break. Dr Crokes pushed on hard and a penalty won and converted by Richie Farrissey meant Crokes went into the break 6 points in front. Great defensive ability was shown by Crokes in the heat, with Shane Kavanagh, Owen Hayes, Joe Keogh and the returning from injury Stephen Foley all stepping up to the mark. But at this level games can turn around quickly and another Duagh goal meant Crokes held a one-point lead after the third quarter. Substitute’s Jamie Linehan and Ivan Hurley added to the fire power and eventually we pushed on to a 3 point advantage heading for the 60 minute mark. Two late Duagh points led to a nervy finish but Crokes came out victorious on a score-line of 1-15 to 2-11. This leaves Dr Crokes in a strong position heading into the final round of games and a win away to Abbeydorney next Wednesday evening would mean a league final meeting with Crotta O’Neills for our Juniors. COISTE NA OG: Saturday was the last day at the Academy for the next four weeks. It will be back in late August. Final. It was a great team performance from the Fossa lads who showed great passion, strength and commitment. The game ebbed and flowed throughout with never more than a score or two between the teams - indeed the teams were level with 10/15 minutes to go. In the end, courtesy of two late goals, Beaufort ran out winners on a score-line of 5-9 to Fossa’s 3-11. U7: Fossa u7s had their first outing of the season away to Milltown-Castlemaine. Played under brilliant sunshine, the Fossa boys and girls showed tremendous skill and determination. U12 GIRLS: Fossa U12 girls faced Cromane away in the U12 Div 1B South League Final. SPORT NOTES had great fun playing rob the nest, doing some relaxing yoga and finished off throwing water balloons at their hard working coaches to cool down. Great fun had by all. At the same time our U13 White Team were hosting An Ghaeltacht in phase 2 of this year’s county league and produced a fantastic performance to make a winning start. Some fantastic defending for our backs and keeper kept our opponents score down and the forward players too were on top form. On Wednesday evening our U15 Green side played Rathmore in the Division 2 Shield Final of the County League. Our U15s performed superbly in an enthralling contest that swung one way then the other with the East Kerry side coming out on top in the end. Our Milltown/Castlemaine side went behind to two early goals but fought back more than once to lead the game by the narrowest of margins heading into the final few minutes. Rathmore finished strongly and got the win but for the neutral on the night in Listry they were treated to a great evening of football action. On Thursday our U11 Boys Team were in action at home to Firies. Both of the two U11 sides performed very well on a beautiful sunny evening at Paddy Burke Memorial Park. There were some fantastic skills on show in all areas of the field, our U11 team showing fantastic progress with every game. Finally our U7 Team hosted Fossa in Milltown for their first ever home match. A fantastic morning was had by all with some brilliant skills on show. Well done to all of the players and their coaches as well as our visiting team Fossa. FIELD DEVELOPMENT:This week saw the completion of the major concrete works by Denis O’Riordan and all at FRC. There are exciting times ahead as this section of our club’s field development nears its conclusion. We will be gathering a group of volunteers on the mornings of tomorrow (Saturday July 31), and Monday, August 2 for a number of jobs that need doing in preparation for our next stage. If you can help out in any way at all (refreshments, tidying up general works etc) please contact John Foley on 087 924 2621. TEAM NEWS: Junior: The fifth and final round of this years Mid-Kerry Junior League saw our junior side miss out against Beaufort in a narrow defeat the final result reading Beaufort GAA 1-16 V 2-10 Milltown/Castlemaine GAA. A late Jamie O’Shea penalty looked set to inspire a comeback but time had just run out. Well done to our Junior side who have performed very well throughout in a very competitive Mid-Kerry Junior League. MINOR: Our Minor side had a great win to keep their good run going in the Semi Final of the Central Region against Renard/St Marys. Our Minors controlled the game well throughout and pro-

Muckross Rowing Club EVENTS: Well done to Ethan O’Neill who represented the club at the Lough Rynn Regatta in Co. Leitrim last weekend, competing in the Mens Junior 18 1x. In a very competitive opening race, Ethan finished fourth having battled among the top three throughout the course of the race. Congratulations once more to our former juniors and UL rowers, Finn O’Sullivan and Niamh Coffey. Finn was winner in the Mens Club Four and Pair while Niamh won gold in both the Womens’ Intermediate Pair and Club Single. Congratulations to Paul Kennedy, who won gold and bronze in the Mens Masters and Senior Double events at the Portmagee Offshore Regatta held in Ballinskelligs last Saturday. Paul was joined by James O’Sullivan of Callinafercy RC. Best of luck to all our crews competing in the Limerick Festival of Junior Rowing this Saturday. As the Irish Championships will not feature races for U16s this year, the O’Briensbridge event will offer 1000m races for J14, J15 and J16 rowers.
