Locals Have Had Their Fill Of Potholes Mayor Niall Kelleher has this week announced details of a local improvement scheme that will afford people the opportunity to apply for grants to improve their private roads. This will, of course, come as welcome news to people with potholes on their private roadways, and the council certainly deserve credit for re-introducing this worthy scheme after an 11-year absence, but many vexed locals have expressed concerns that plenty of potholes on public roads in the town itself remain unfilled. The area around the cinema, the Hahah, Mission Road and East Avenue Road is a particular black spot in terms of pesky potholes and little appears to have been done to address this very pressing issue. Killarney natives who frequently pass through this busy part of town have long complained
about the state of the roads here and, although work has recently been carried out elsewhere in town (such as at the Port Road and Plunkett Street, for instance), these particular streets seem to have been left behind. With a number of hotels, restaurants, cafés and amenities – not least the ever popular jaunting cars – situated nearby, the area is a hotbed for tourists and we are certainly not putting our best foot forward by ignoring these unsightly and potentially dangerous potholes. Every year as we re-enter the busy tourist season, residents and business owners alike make a conscientious effort to show Killarney in its best possible light. The council also do great work in this regard, but surely this special area of town deserves particular – and urgent - attention?
Plunkett Street To Close At 7pm Nightly Last August’s move to pedestrianise Plunkett Street proved popular with locals and tourists alike and the practice is set to return over the coming months, it has been revealed A new plan for the quaint, one-way street, which was confirmed at a council meeting on Wednesday, will see it shut to traffic permanently from 7pm to 7am from April 19. It will also be pedestrianised on a trial basis between 11am and 7pm from March 31 to April 9, May 11 to May 21 and again from June 29 to September 3. Speaking to the Advertiser yesterday, Mayor Niall Kelleher said the move, which was put forward by John Joe
Culloty and seconded by Michael Gleeson, passed by a majority 7-1. “The night-time pedestrianisation is an exceptionally positive move that will benefit the people and the town of Killarney,” he said. He also explained that the trial periods were specifically chosen to test the new set-up out during the school term, when school was out, and over the busy summer period. Fears have been expressed in the past by business owners that closing Plunkett Street would be detrimental to trade but the mayor said the majority of the feedback so far has been positive.

Fears Over Slow Progress On Danger Junctions Words: Adam Moynihan
Two of the town’s most dangerous junctions appear to be set for significant overhauls but locals have expressed their dismay that the potentially life-saving changes are taking so long to implement. The foot of Madam’s Hill has long been acknowledged as an accident and traffic black spot and observers believe the positioning of a 100km/h signpost BEFORE the junction on the way out of town represents a major, and possibly deadly, planning flaw. Cllr Maura Healy-Rae told the Advertiser that she has asked that the speed limit be extended out beyond the junction, which would then give people a greater chance of exiting and access-
ing it. The council are currently awaiting a ‘speed review’ which will determine the appropriate course of action. With over 20 houses under construction at the top of Madam’s Hill, the junction is expected to be under further strain before long. One concerned local resident said the current situation was “an accident waiting to happen”. Meanwhile, progress is apparently being made on the Lewis Road/bypass junction but it could be after the summer before any significant upgrades begin. Speaking to the Advertiser yesterday, Mayor Niall Kelleher said he was “very annoyed” that the TII (Transport Infrastructure Ireland) had not yet met with the council but wel-
comed the news that they have requested a project appraisal, which they hope will be approved in June or July. An archaeological and environmental assessment is also underway and, subject to this screening process, the Part 8 Notice is expected to be published in Q3 (June/July/August) of this year. It is still unknown what the proposed new junction would look like. It has also been revealed that the current signage layout has been examined and some additional signs will be erected as an interim measure. Here at the Advertiser we have campaigned for a major overhaul of the Lewis Road/bypass junction for quite some time so we are pleased to hear that some progress has
been made. Credit is due to the mayor and the 5,000 people who signed the petition for change at the site. It is disappointing, however, that we find ourselves heading into another busy tourist season with no concrete solutions, bar a few signs, in place at what is Killarney’s biggest accident black spot. Last May, cyclist Annette Mannix tragically died when she was involved in a collision with a tractor at this exact location and, almost a year on, the area is still a major concern for the people of Killarney. Hopefully the situation is resolved sooner rather than later because - and it goes without saying - the last thing anyone wants is another accident.
best wishes the new proprietors. We are all delighted for the guys taking over and we wish them all the very best,” she said. “We will be in for the
opening to give our best wishes. Jerome is looking forward to spending time with his parents, enjoying the outdoors and travelling in his semi-retirement as he turned 50 last week. We are delighted to see Corkery’s continue after so many years!” The bar has been taken over by Alan Breen, John O’Sullivan and Kieran O’Leary. Alan also runs the popular K-Town bar with Kieran, who is a former Kerry footballer. The bar is currently closed as the new owners are carrying out some renovations. They have revealed that the pub will be every so slightly rebranded as Corkery’s Sports Bar.
Changing Of The Guard At Corkery’s There was an emotional changing of the guard on High Street this week as the owners of the popular, family-run Corkery’s Bar decided to move on after 72 great years behind the bar. Jerome Corkery had been running the establishment since 2009 with the help of his siblings, Mary and Tadhg, and his parents, Tadhg and Joan, previously took the reins in 1967. The initial proprietor was Jerome’s grandfather in 1946. The family took to Facebook to express their gratitude to their loyal customers. “A huge thank you to everybody who has supported us over the last 72 years,” they said, “it has been a wonderful life inside the counter of Corkery’s Bar where we made good friends!” Since the news broke, locals have recalled the countless wonderful times and stories shared with friends and staff
at the legendary tavern. The well-liked family certainly kept a wonderful establishment and the Killarney Advertiser would like to wish them all the best for the future. Speaking to the Advertiser yesterday, Mary Corkery passed on her

TOWNTALK Mayor In The Running Liam & Aslan Frontman Set For Seanad Seat The Killarney political scene could be set for a major overhaul following the news that two councillors, including the Mayor, are in the running for vacant seats in Seanad Éireann. Niall Kelleher has been nominated by Fianna Fáil to be one of their candidates while Bobby O’Connell’s name has been put forward by an outside body. The pair are vying to replace recently departed senators Denis Landy (Labour) and Trevor ó Clochartaigh who were both elected by the Agricultural Panel. Landy has resigned due to ill-health while ó Clochartaigh has taken
on a new role as TG4’s communication manager. The councillors will have the step down from their positions in the Municipal District Council if their bids are successful, which means Killarney could be looking for a new mayor in the not too distant future. The polls for the by-election will close on April 27,

News Briefs ... Green Light For Greenway? As reported in last week’s Killarney Advertiser, the process for the proposed construction of the South Kerry Greenway has gotten under way this week, Kerry County Council have confirmed. Once planning is granted, which cold
take six months, the works will begin. The news comes quickly on the back of the recent approval of a similar project in North Kerry. It is hoped that the new South Kerry Greenway will provide a major boost to the Iveragh Peninsula’s already healthy tourist trade.
Congratulations to talented Killarney musician Tom Lucey who has made it to number four in the Irish iTunes charts with his brand new single See It Through Their Eyes, which he released as part of a campaign for autism awareness. Tom is certainly in good company with global superstars Camila Cabello, Sigrid, Rudimental and Justin Timberlake also all currently in the top ten. The campaign, which started on Monday and runs for seven days, sees 35 people involved with autistic children take over the My Boy Blue Snapchat account, including parents, teachers, special needs assistants and therapists.
Tom visited the Chatroom last week with Lisa Curran, a fellow singer whose son is autistic, to tell us how they got involved in the campaign and we are delighted to see the single doing so well.

“I Found Myself Mixing Up The Accused And The Complainant”
Now that rugby trial. Like most people, I have been transfixed by the Belfast trial and I found myself in discussion one night mixing up the accused and the complainant, the prosecution and the defence. I thought about this afterwards and of course it was because the complainant was being treated in the same manner as an accused person. I have never heard it asked of a complainant so extensively why she had not done this, why she had not done that - in other words, she had to defend her actions or her lack of actions - in a case in which the accused were on trial. That aside, I am tempted to advise young women, “Don’t smile at Paddy Jackson, or he’ll have all his rugby mates smiling back at you!” He has such team spirit! Rugby is a muddy game, but it is also middle class. If Twitter is to be believed, this kind of outrageous attitude to women by these super fit, super over-adulated sportsmen, is not confined to Ulster Rugby. The clear impression is the kind of shocking behaviour indulged in - which at times sounded like that old Britvic Orange ad with the caveman dragging the woman by the hair, the maniac drinking - the gutter talk about women was not picked off the grass, or the turf. It is cultural and it is acceptable, is the impression.
And in the back of my mind I recalled that throwaway remark, albeit much more innocent, but still shocking, made by Ronan O’Gara on the Late Late which he had to apologise to his wife for. Back to Belfast. We’ll take the massive heavy drinking. And the denial of impairment. Olding had eight cans of Carlsberg, four pints of Guinness, two gin and tonics, five vodka and lemons, five shots of tequila, and Sambucas and then more beer. He says he was in control. Right so! But we’ll also take the mindset in the way women are referred to in the exchanged text messages between these young educated champion sportsmen – and we wonder what was said in the deleted ones. Those not deleted by the “lads” were clearly felt to be acceptable and presentable. “Belfast sluts” are treated like a team from an alien species. The exchanges read like something out of an episode of Mad Men, or from a mindset that is so out of touch, you wonder how it can ever fit into the modern era. Rugby, one was always led to believe, was a gentleman’s sport with the rough and tumble played under strict rules and left on the pitch. Honour and all that! Almost akin to cricket. And its followers wellheeled and well-represented among the professions and colleges and business. What this trial has shown us is the brutish
core, the caveman mentality that lies beneath. Something of the same aura exists around male inter county Gaelic Football and hurling players. The same holds true of major soccer players. You’d almost be inclined to believe any player involved in putting on the jersey for county or for country is above reproach, north and south. Certainly that seems the attitude of the courts anytime a major player is up for anything in this jurisdiction, north and south - and that’s even if it manages to get to the prosecution stage. One fervently hopes there is nothing even near as shocking as the behaviour of rugby players going on in the Gaaah! I have, anyway, a jaundiced opinion
of male team sports: there is too much made of the players, they get away with too much caveman behaviour off the pitch. In short, there is too much adulation of this outmoded warrior culture. It’s even worse now that fitness has become a supreme good in itself, and the ideal is no longer the broken body. Irish Rugby will have to be prepared to “field” a few questions about the attitude to women it expects of its player, me thinks. That the Irish team captain and three Ulster players turned out the opening day was a show of moral support for those on trial. I don’t care what explanation was given afterward, or how many crowns or slams they have notched up.
There Were Six Road Crews For Litter – Now There Are Two
As we come up to the spring clean, litter alongside the roads, and even off-road, has never been worse. Almost 222 tonnes of litter and household waste was “fly-tipped” and left on roadsides and bottle banks in Kerry last year, and “a phenomenal” 67 tonnes of this was collected during a spring clean-up of main roads. The volume of litter dumped illegally throughout the county has gone up by almost 38 tonnes on 2016. On one day alone, the county spring clean of April 8, 50 tonnes were collected by thousands of volunteers. Higher refuse collection charges are being blamed, but most of the unsightly roadside bottles, chip bags and coffee cups are left by passing motorists and by cyclists. Major cycle events, even the Ring of Kerry, leave giant plastic bottle messes - no matter that most are picked up by organisers. Ditto “adventure races”: plastic bottles combined with high energy bar wrappings are left. The carelessness of the super-fit may be astonishing, until you reflect that it may be part of the single-minded approach that puts personal fitness above all else, and that sees the countryside, the mountains, the walkways and the roadsides simply as a giant, fresh air gym. The litter problem has persisted despite green schools programmes, and our ingrained throwaway mentality is made worse by the increase in plastic wrappings and takeout food and drink.
Killarney and, indeed, Kenmare and south Kerry are cleaner than most thanks to the volunteers in villages and in towns. But, I am going to ask, given that we have failed spectacularly over at least two generations to get to the root of the problem (that is to persuade people in Ireland not to litter) are our noble volunteers who pick up after others simply perpetuating the problem? There is an age factor looming now - the volunteers are getting older and they are not being joined by younger people in enough numbers. Kenmare’s Patrick Connor-Scarteen is asking sports clubs of all kinds to consider joining Tidy Towns. Macra and other organisations might consider the same. Before the bust, the council crews took to the roads and after the spring cutting, the worst of the litter was collected with road crews and sweeper machines. There was plenty left over for volunteers to handpick. The same is replicated in the Killarney National Park. Rangers and maintenance people are simply not there anymore. And, again, we have high profile tourism figures, hoteliers and restaurant owners, going into the woods as on last Saturday morning, cutting laurel opposite the Muckross Post Office, with large roadside signs saying volunteers wanted. Over thirty years ago, I was part of the same clean-up movements. I remember the late Norma Lougheed and the girl guides taking part in the clean-up of the lake shore organised by
the Greens. And we cut rhododendron too. But to be honest, the rhododendron only began to get properly tacked when a professional approach was adopted, after much campaigning. Thirty years ago such volunteerism was rare and unusual. Then it was all State. Now it is all volunteers and no State input. There is something shameful on the part of a State which boasts of near full employment when it can’t employ more road crews and more people to work in the National Park that is the jewel in the crown of our tourist industry. More and more the State is simply facilitating, or documenting, and at best responding to crises. The facts are there: where there were six road crews - roughly 30 men - employed before the bust, there are two crews now for the whole of the Killarney area, including Castleisland and Rathmore. The roads didn’t get shorter, as Maura Healy-Rae said recently. Back to the woods: these are precious woods we are hacking through. The volunteers are well-meaning, but they are not professional woodsmen. The national roadsides need to be cleaned professionally, with sweepers and crews. In Killarney, if the rates and multi-millions in taxes paid from businesses cannot be ring-fenced for the park or the roads, the solution is at hand: a bed and restaurant tax collected by the hoteliers and restaurateurs and vintners would create full-time, all-year-round jobs in the park and on roads crews.

And The Oskar Goes To… This was the first event of its kind in Munster and if last night’s incredible show is anything to go by, it certainly won’t be the last. Kilcummin and Glenflesk GAA clubs banded together for this novel fundraiser and to call it a roaring success would be doing it a disservice. It was a thoroughly entertaining evening filled with laughs, cheers, and, it has to be said, no little talent. It’s not yet known exactly how much money each club will walk away with but let’s put it this way: they’ll have a job counting it. A sell-out crowd packed into the INEC to watch seven short films produced by and starring a number of brave actors from the rival parishes and the entire production, from the event itself to the short films on show, was immaculate from start to finish. There were star performances at every turn and it was clear from an early stage that the judging panel of Donal Courtney, Maeve McGrath and Barry Keoghan would have a serious job on their hands in choosing the cream of the crop, as would the audience who had a major say in selecting the destination of the Best Movie award. In the end, the big winner of the night was The Field. Derry Healy’s version of the John B. Keane classic really hit the nail on the head, scooping the Oskar for Best Movie in what was declared a unanimous decision. Derry Healy also picked up the Best Actor award for his cracking portrayal of the Bull McCabe, while co-star Kevin O’Riordan, who was undoubtedly the star of the night, deservedly won Best Supporting Actor for his hilarious version of Bird O’Donnell. The Best Actress award went to Rosie Healy for her powerful performance as Colonel Jessup in A Few Good Women and Trish O’Callaghan was named Best Supporting Actress for her role in Forrest Gump. Donal Dwyer, who was also in contention for the Best Actor nod for his impressive portrayal of the Big Fella, picked up the Best Producer award for his work on memorable political drama Michael Collins. Best Costumes went to A Few Good Women and the biggest cheer of the night came when the talented Janet O’Donoghue was chosen as the Most Promising Young Actress. Earlier in the evening, judges Aidan O’Mahony and his wife Denise presented the Best Dressed Female and Male awards to Norma Leane and Pádraig Creedon respectively. It really was a fantastic night. A good idea, perfectly executed. Well done to all involved, especially the organising committee who put in Trojan work to make sure the event went off without a hitch.
Best Film: The Field presented by Pat O’Connor.
Best Costume: A few good woman presented by Christine O’ Carroll.
Best Actress: Rosie Healy presented by Sinead Courtney. Best producer: Donal Dwyer presented by Gavin O’Leary.
Best dressed male: Padraig Creedon. Best dressed female: Norma Leane.

“Text Messages?
All We Have To Do Is Look Out The Window”
Words: Adam Moynihan Residents in a flooding black spot in Glenflesk are frequently the worst-affected in the entire county but, they say, little action has been taken to solve the ongoing issue. Many also agree with the sentiments of Cllr Maura Healy-Rae who recently criticised authorities for a lack of action, saying the practice of sending out texts warning of potentially severe weather is of little use. “I think I can speak for most people in Glenflesk when I say that all we have to do is look out the window,” said Damien Switzer. “We are living in Glenflesk
long enough to know how to read the conditions locally. We know when the floods are coming, even to what level they will be at and how long it takes to drain away. “Its not rocket science. The rivers burst their banks and the fields flood for miles around. This is a regular enough occurrence in Glenflesk. Roads remain generally unaffected. In our case in Curreal, just yards from the main Cork to Killarney road, occasionally it will come out onto the road - depending on a number of factors it could be 2 to 3 feet deep - yet 100 metres away it’s
bone dry. I generally take no notice until I can’t see the fencing around the local football pitch (because it’s under water). “Then it will creep up my back garden and up my driveway from the road. Even then I’m not overly worried. Brave drivers make it through but we know that when the road goes quiet, it’s too deep. We kind of know when it’s going to rise further; a sure sign is when yours truly starts thinking about sandbags and moving furniture upstairs. We have it down to a fine art at this stage. Actually that’s a sad statement yet a true
reflection of our situation. “So text messages from the government? Sometimes it floods overnight and is gone by morning without making much rain or any weather warnings. I was told in December 2015 after storm Desmond that it was a one in one hundred event. Funny that, it has happened three times since.” Damien added that while he was aware that the council and engineers are facing a difficult situation, clearing the rivers would be a good start. He also praised the work of the Healy-Raes for lobbying so hard on their behalf.

Car Crashes Through Minish Level Crossing

UK Billboards Highlight Wild Atlantic Way Some 300 eye-catching billboard ads are highlighting the Wild Atlantic Way in key roadside and city centre locations across Britain, officials say. It’s all part of Tourism Ireland’s “Wonders of the Wild Atlantic Way” campaign which is under way in cities in Britain with direct flights to the West of Ireland – including London, Liverpool, Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow and Edinburgh.
A novel fundraising initiative that saw pupils of one Killarney national school arriving to class wearing odd socks under their uniforms has raised an impressive €700 for the Kerry branch of Down Syndrome Ireland. The principal and teachers in Tiernaboul National School in Killarney have never been sticklers for insisting on matching socks but, for one day only, there was a price to pay for those that turned up not wearing them last Thursday with multiple offenders caught in the act. Principal Conor Gleeson was very happy to see odd socks dangling under the desks as it meant that it helped raise some funds for a charity that is very close to the school’s heart. The fun promotion was in aid of Down Syndrome Day and, for a €2 penalty, the children were encouraged to turn up without their socks being the same colour or design. Two of the pupils in Tiernaboul, Jessica Treyvaud and Niamh Foley, are members of the Down Syndrome community and they took pride of place on the day as their pals in the 53-pupil school supported the great cause. In addition to what was collected in the classrooms, generous donations were also received from others, including the minor and U-16 footballers of Spa GAA Club who held an odd sock training night to join in the fun. “Everybody was very generous and we were delighted with the support we received right across the community,” said principal Conor. A cheque for €700 was presented by the school to Jessica’s dad, Mark, and Niamh’s mum, Breda, and it will go towards one of several great projects being undertaken by Down Syndrome Kerry.

Competitor Tom Leslie watched over by his father Michael.
Although the inclement weather forced the organisers of a ploughing match to reschedule the event from its initial date on March 11 last, it proved a huge hit when it eventually went ahead O’Leary’s Farm, Listry on Sunday, organised by the newly affiliated Killarney Ploughing Association. The event had been formally launched by Mayor of Killarney, Cllr Niall Kelleher, at a gathering on Wharton’s Farm in Fossa in early February where it was heard that with five ploughing associations currently operating in Kerry – in Abbeydorney, Ardfert, Ballyheigue, Ballyduff and Causeway – a need was identified for a ploughing association in Killarney
to be affiliated again. There is a great ploughing tradition in the greater Killarney area with six local men winning All-Ireland titles in the 1950s and in 1954 Killarney hosted the first World Championships to be held in Ireland. Killarney also played host to the National Ploughing Champions on two occasions, in 1939 and 1961. The weekend match bridged a 53year gap since the last ploughing match took place in Gortroe, Fossa in 1965. Local man Danny O’Leary of Bishop’s Farm, Ballycasheen was a champion in one of the categories that day and, in a great link with the past, he is now president of the Killarney Ploughing Association.
Community South Kerry Development Partnership CLG (SKDP) works to promote and assist the development of sustainable, vibrant communities in Killarney and the greater South Kerry area, and to improve the quality of life of people living there through the provision of social and economic opportunities. SKDP is a local development company which works in partnership with local charities, sporting and community organisations though the Tús scheme. Tús is an activation initiative scheme designed for those who are unemployed and on the live register. Its purpose is to support the work readiness of participants, providing short-term quality
and suitable working opportunities for people while at the same time carrying out beneficial work within communities. The overall winner of this year’s Killarney St Patrick’s Day Parade was awarded to the Killarney Men’s Shed for their restored Victorian carriage. This is a wonderful and exciting example of work in which a local community organization fully utilized Tús supports in Killarney. Other examples of supported projects in the Killarney area include local sporting clubs, tidy towns committees and local charities. SKDP GLC has successfully supported local groups and services in the Killarney area for seven years now
Timothy O’Sullivan (Beaufort), Deputy Danny Healy-Rae and Thomas Wharton (Chairman of Killarney Ploughing Association).
but as economic factors see a decline in unemployment figures, we find ourselves faced with lower availability of participants suited to these groups’ individual needs and circumstances. We want to continue our efforts to support these services and we are welcoming your interest in participating in Tús (qualifying conditions will apply).
If you would like to get involved in projects like the restored carriage or similar community-based work, please contact the Killarney South Kerry Development Partnership CLG office at 064 66 36572 or email the local Tús supervisors Mike Daly (mdaly@skdp.net), Lisa Murphy (lmurphy@skdp.net) or Ger Moynihan (gmoynihan@skdp.net).

Mandy Moore’s Secret Trip To Tipperary Revealed Mandy Moore went on a secret trip to Tipperary last week. The This Is Us star jetted into Ireland to discover her Irish roots for the US version of Who Do You Think You Are? for NBC. According to the Irish Mail on Sunday, the actress spent two days in Tipperary researching her family tree. “Mandy has always been curious about her roots, and when the chance came to dig a little deeper she jumped at it,” a source said. “She traced her lineage from her father’s side to Ireland and was flown in secretly last week…her journey
took her to Holycross in Tipperary and she spent two days there uncovering her family history.” The source added that Mandy’s episode will have “some big surprises and dark secrets, as you might expect with a Catholic family that had to leave Ireland back in the Twenties”. “But we all had to sign confidentiality clauses, so you will have to wait until the show goes out for the big reveal,” they added. In a recent Instagram post, Mandy paid tribute to her grandmother Eileen Friedman.

Growing Killarney’s Craft Beer Scene
Letter A Eagarthóir, It is indeed good to read that Labour leader Brendan Howlin acknowledges that the abolition of town councils was a mistake made by the Fine Gael-Labour coalition government of which he was a very senior Minister (Anne Lucey’s Views On The News, March 23). Some of us pleaded with the national politicians at that time to refrain from supporting then Minister Phil Hogan’s plan but they remained deaf to our pleadings as did most Oireachtas members. Brendan Howlin now belatedly sees that the effectiveness of his native town Wexford as the economic driver for a wide hinterland is greatly diminished. In my recent submission to the new Boundary Review committee I have forcefully made the point about the importance of the town with its own council to the overall welfare of an extensive area. I also made those points and many more prior to the abolition of town councils. Very few locally or nationally listened. Hopefully they will now. It is never too late to undo the damage that has been done. I welcome Anne’s concern at the
lack of a pedestrian crossing on Mission Road to facilitate persons wishing to access the wonderful Killarney House and Gardens (National Park) adjacent to the Monsignor O’Flaherty statue. At the Killarney Municipal Area meeting of February 6, 2018 I had a motion on the agenda calling for the provision of such a crossing. The reply stated that the necessary traffic counts would be undertaken to determine if the need existed. Of course the need exists and will continue to grow. Life and limb are at present at great risk. Many older people are fearful of attempting to cross an extremely busy roadway and some turn away. How terrible it is to deprive locals and visitors of the joy of recreating in a sublime location. I will continue to keep this matter on the agenda. I have been privileged to serve on Killarney Town Council with excellent councillors both female and male. Each of the nine elected members made valuable contributions to the town, its people and to the democratic process. Le Gach Dea-Ghuí, Cllr Michael Gleeson
Letter Thank You I want to extend a sincere thanks you to Donna and Veronica at Creative Kids Playschool. Since my son has started going there he has a new lease of life, his speech has improved and he has made so many new friends. He even wants to go there on the days they are closed! Donna and Veronica go beyond the call of duty with all the activities they do, especially the arts and crafts.
Creative Kids Playschool encourages learning, stimulates the minds of the children and ensures a constant flow of entertainment for them. It is such a relief as a mother to know my child is completely safe and happy. Thanks a million, Donna and Veronica, for the constant first-class care, affection and attention. Last Thursday evening, Sligo based brewery White Hag descended upon Killarney. At Celtic Whiskey Bar & Larder, White Hag brewmaster Joe Kearns conducted a whiskey barrel-aged beer tasting for Kerry beer enthusiasts. In-house whiskey specialist Alan O’Donovan was also on hand to discuss cask maturation and the impact wood has on spirit and beer. Beer enthusiasts were introduced to White Hag’s ‘The Hare and The Hag’ Stout - a collaboration with Donegal’s Kinnegar Brewing. This highly sought-after Irish coffee nitro stout has had fantastic reviews and was undoubtedly one of the highlights of the evening. So much so, Celtic Whiskey
Bar & Larder have managed to acquire one of the last eight kegs in the country! To cleanse the palate, a glass of White Hag’s session IPA ‘Little Fawn’ followed, a much lighter and fruitier beer in comparison to its whiskey barrel-aged counterparts. At an impressive 10.2%, the evening finished with an imperial oatmeal stout, ‘Black Boar’, a full-bodied, bold, dark ale with intense dark fruits, treacle and coffee. Next on the bar’s calendar is a Tullamore D.E.W. and brew tasting with Tullamore D.E.W. Brand Ambassador Kevin Pigott on Thursday, April 19 at 7.30pm. Tickets are €15 and are available from Celtic Whiskey Bar & Larder. Sláinte!

Belfast Rape Trial:
Woman Illegally Identified On Social Media
The identification of the woman at the centre of the Belfast rape trial on social media is being investigated, police have confirmed. The Police Service of Northern Ireland said that the woman who claimed that she was raped by Ireland and Ulster rugby players Paddy Jackson and Stuart Olding two years ago at a house party has been named online, breaching her legal entitlements. Jackson and Olding were found not guilty
at Belfast Crown Court of raping the then19-year-old student by a jury on Wednesday. Mr Jackson (26) was also found not guilty of sexually assaulting the then 19-year-old woman. The rugby players’ close friend Blane McIlroy (26) has been found not guilty of exposure while a second friend, Rory Harrison (25), has been found not guilty of perverting the course of justice and withholding information.
Camera Lost At Sea Returned (Working And Fully Charged) After Two Years In an extraordinary tale of luck and coincidence, a camera lost at sea for more than two years was discovered and will be returned to its owner. It washed up on a beach in Taiwan covered in barnacles and barely recognisable - but thanks to a waterproof case, remained in perfect working condition. The camera was discovered by a group of schoolchildren and their teacher who decided to try and track down the owner by sharing the find on Facebook. And in just one day they had. “I couldn’t believe it,” camera owner Serina Tsubakihara told the BBC. “I was
super surprised when my friends told me about this and sent me the post with those pictures.” The Japanese university student was on holiday on the island of Ishigaki, Okinawa, some 250km (155 miles) east of Taiwan, when she dropped the camera. “I was scuba diving and I lost the camera when one of my friends ran out of air and needed my help.” That was in September 2015 and when the camera dropped from her hands Ms Tsubakihara assumed it was lost forever. But, safely encased in a diving case, the camera went on a little journey of its own.
18 Million Tune In To Stormy Daniels’ Lawyer Wants Roseanne Reboot
Trump Corner
Trump To Testify The legal battle over an agreement to keep porn star Stormy Daniels quiet about her allegation that she and Donald Trump had a sexual relationship took another interesting turn this week as Daniels’ lawyer asked in federal court to take a deposition from the US President. Avenatti said in the motion he would need no more than two hours to question each of the men. “We’re looking for sworn answers from the president and Mr Cohen about what they knew, when they knew it and what they did about it,” Avenatti told the Associated Press. While he noted that “in every case you always have to be open to settlement”, Avenatti said “at
Never fails to entertain
this point we don’t see how this case would possibly be settled”. Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, originally sued Trump on 6 March, saying he had never put his signature on a $130,000 agreement for her to stay silent in 2016, just before the presidential election, about what she called their “intimate” relationship, which she says occurred in 2006 and 2007, when Trump’s wife Melania had recently given birth to their son, Barron. As precedent, Daniels’ lawyer’s motion references the fact that Bill Clinton was deposed while in office in 1998 during the Paula Jones sexual harassment suit. That came after the supreme court ruled a sitting president was not immune from civil litigation on something that happened before taking office and was unrelated to the office.
Popular 1990s sitcom Roseanne made a hugely successful return to screens this week as an estimated 18.4 million tuned into the show’s long-awaited reboot. The updated sitcom starring Roseanne Barr returned on Tuesday, more than two decades after the original ended its hit run. The hour-long debut episode was watched by 10% more viewers than saw the May 1997 finale of ABC’s original Roseanne. Given the explosion of alternate platforms and series since then and compared to other successful sitcom reboots, that figure is significant. NBC’s Will & Grace, for example, returned this season with
its original 1998-2006 cast to a debut audience of 10.1 million viewers and was quickly renewed for a second and then a third season. For its first year, NBC’s show is averaging 5.7 million people watching episodes on the day they air. But with the time-shifting viewership that networks are focusing on, its audience averages 9 million per episode over a seven-day period. Another promising sign for Roseanne was the estimated audience growth from the first half-hour (18 million) to the second (18.9 million), a sign that viewers liked what they saw. Future episodes are a halfhour, airing on Tuesdays in the US.

Snapper Mistaken For Sniper In Derrynane
A simple misunderstanding led to pandemonium in Derrynane recently as a tourist mistook a photographer’s tripod for a gun. The panicked onlooker evidently thought something serious was about to go down and immediately alerted the emergency services. A large number of local gardaí, many of whom
were armed, quickly descended on the beach. The area was shut down as gardaí tracked down the photographer. It wasn’t difficult – the innocent snapper was completely unaware of the commotion his tripod had caused. Once it became clear that no one was in danger, the security alert was abruptly cancelled.
Trèbes Attack: Vegan Activist Detained Over Butcher Post
Abortion Referendum Set For May 25 Ireland will vote in a referendum on May 25 on liberalising its strict abortion laws, the government has confirmed, in an announcement that officially begins two months of campaigning. Abortion has long been a divisive issue in Ireland. A complete ban was only lifted in 2013, when terminations were allowed in cases where the mother’s life was in danger. Voters will be asked if they want to repeal article 40.3.3 – known as the eighth amendment – which since 1983 has given unborn foetuses and pregnant women an equal right to life, in effect enshrining a ban on abortion in the constitution.
If Ireland votes in favour of repeal, the government has said it will introduce legislation permitting unrestricted abortion during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. Currently, terminations are only allowed when the life of the mother is at risk, and the maximum penalty for accessing an illegal abortion is 14 years in prison. The UN’s human rights committee has condemned the ban as “cruel, inhuman and degrading”. The health minister, Simon Harris, and housing minister, Eoghan Murphy, signed the order to set the date of the historic vote after legislation allowing for it was passed in the Seanad. Polls will open at 7am on May 25 and close at 10pm.
Irish Support For Immigration Lower Than European Average A vegan activist in France who posted a Facebook message said to be insulting to a butcher killed by an Islamist militant during an attack last week is due to appear in court, reports say. She is alleged to have said she had “zero compassion” for the victim. She is to appear before a judge for condoning terrorism. In last week’s attack, Radouane Lakdim killed four people, three of them in a supermarket in Trèbes, including butcher Chris-
tian Medvès. The activist was detained by police in Saint-Gaudens, not far from Toulouse, in the southwest of the country. “So does it shock you that a murderer gets killed by a terrorist? Not me, I have zero compassion for him, there is still justice,” she is said to have posted, according to a judicial source quoted by the AFP news agency. Condoning terrorism carries a maximum seven-year jail sentence and a fine of up to €100,000.
New research has found that attitudes to immigration in Ireland deteriorated during the recession, and are now worse than the western European average. Support for Muslim and Roma immigration is lower than the norm in ten other countries in western Europe. It also shows that frequent contact with other races or ethnic groups is directly associated with more positive attitudes, if the contact is positive. The “Attitudes to Diversity in Ireland” study draws on the EU-backed European Social Survey. In the Republic, a nationally representative sample of approximately 2,300 Irish-born adults was interviewed every two years between 2002 and 2014. The study finds their attitudes to immigrants and immigration vary significantly
over time, depending on the ethnicity of the migrants, the respondents’ education, their financial security, and on the level of individual contact people have with people from different ethnic backgrounds. The ESRI prepared the report for the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission and found that the positive perception of immigrants’ contribution to the economy increased during the boom between 2002 and 2006, then diminished with the onset of the recession in 2008 reaching its lowest point in 2010, but eventually improving as the economic outlook brightened. 58% of respondents supported immigrants of the same ethnicity as the majority here, sliding to 41% support for Muslim migrants and 25% backing for Roma arrivals.
Former J1 Students Could Be Owed €800
Irish students who took part in the J1 visa programme in the summer of 2017 have been urged to submit their tax refund and students who travelled on the programme in 2014 and failed to claim a refund have have just 3 left weeks to do so. 2018 could signal the final year of this lucrative tax break due to changes introduced by President Trump last year.
Eileen Devereux, Commercial Director Taxback.com explained, “In introducing the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, President Trump eliminated the personal exemption for tax years 2018 through 2025. This is likely to affect the thousands of Irish students who go to the US every summer to work. We’re calling on anyone who took part in this programme over the last 4 years to come forward and get their refund –
particularly anyone who was there in the summer of 2014 as their window to claim is closing soon – after April 17 they will no longer be eligible for a refund”. Taxback.com say travelling to the US on the J1 working holiday visa is a rite of passage for many young people in Ireland. They estimate that approximately 30,000 students have taken part over the last 4 years.

Netflix - The Defiant Ones
Review: Kodaline: Follow Your Fire Kodaline have shared their surging, powerhouse new song ‘Follow Your Fire’. The Irish group are widely expected to release a new album this summer, with the previews coming thick and fast. Out now ‘Follow Your Fire’ is a bold return, one fired up by those epic
live shows. “It’s been a while since we released our second album”, says Steve Garrigan. “But we felt we need to take the time to make sure this was the best album we could make! We are so happy with it and can’t wait for people to hear it!”
The Defiant Ones, a new 4 part documentary miniseries on Netflix which primarily focuses on the partnership between Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre, co-founders of Beats Electronics. The pair have worked together successfully for decades. Interscope Records, cofounded by Iovine, marketed and distributed Dre and Suge Knight’s Death Row Records in the early Nineties. By the end of that decade Iovine and Dre partnered for Dre’s own label, Af-
termath. In 2006, Iovine and Dre teamed again to create Beats by Dre and they debuted their first product two years later. Apple purchased the company in 2014 for $3 billion. Allen Hughes filmed Dre and Iovine over the course of three years. In addition to their candid interviews, the documentary houses interviews with Bono, Eminem, Nas, Ice Cube, Gwen Stefani, Snoop Dogg, Trent Reznor and others.

If you’re fed up at being housebound and are looking funny at your kitchen thinking you could do with a change, we are all about the kitchen this month. See our top trends for kitchens in 2018, even if you’re not in the market for a new kitchen. Sometimes a new table or chairs, a coat of paint or even a new clock can change how you feel about the whole room. We spend so much time in our kitchen and often it’s a room that lacks homely touches. We love the Thomas Kent clock from Hal-Lou Killarney and the lovely counter stools from McElligots Castleisland will add some texture to your kitchen. If you’re looking at painting your walls or cabinets, the Little Green Paint Company has the most amazing colours, available from Corcorans Furniture. We love this kitchen painted in “Dark Lead”. Want a completely new look but can’t face replacing your kitchen? If it’s in good working order but just a bit dated, why not take a look at painting your cabinets? Top Team Painters show us a ‘before and after’ of their wonderful work on a client’s kitchen. Our featured kitchen is amazing. With a table to seat ten, it’s perfect for all those family gatherings and its neutral palate is timeless. We are all a bit green with envy. A special thanks to the wonderful homeowners who allowed their amazing houses to be photographed.

www.topteampainters.net Top Team Painters offer Kitchen Makeovers to include spray painting of doors, replacing counter tops, sinks, tiling, lighting and decorating services. They also specialise in commercial and domestic painting and decorating and aim to deliver the perfect finish and superb customer relations throughout the job in hand, no matter how small or large the job is. Emer tells us how they achieved the amazing transformation in these pictures. What we did here was: removed the sink, tiles, work surface and refitted all new ones. We put in lighting in shelves, resprayed the kitchen, decorated the full room (doors, skirts, ceiling and walls), replaced the glass in the doors and varnished the floor. The project was complete in eight days start to finish. For your free consultation, please contact Emer on 085 8120344.

Kitchen Of The Month
Have you ever dreamed up your ultimate kitchen? The one you would build if a genie came out of a lamp and granted you one dream home? We think the owners of this amazing home did just that, and got everything right. From the neutral palate to the table, which can accommodate even the largest family gathering, the pantry wall and seemless floor to ceiling presses, everthing here is planned and executed to perfection. To make all their wishes a reality, they used Counihan’s Fine Designs Killarney, who took their dreams and made them a reality by advising on the best countertops, colour choices and cabinet finishes. The presses were built to go to the ceiling then finished off using handmade coving. The hob, which is on the island, is perfect, allowing you to entertain while cooking up a storm. We love the counterstools which add a pop of dark grey, matching the bulkhead which is painted in colour trend silver moonlight. It was very important for the owners to source everything localy. The appliances are all from O’Leary’s Expert, the handmade coving is by Philip Walsh, the dining chairs are from McElligott’s Castleisland, the table is Neptune and available to order from Lots Tralee, and the counter stools are from Mylestone Interiors, The living area couch is from Killarney Carpet and Furniture Centre, while O’Callaghan’s National Tile supplied the wood effect floor tiles. The kitchen is by Fine Designs and countertops are by An Riocht Stonecraft Tralee.

Kitchen 2018
TRENDS
Dark Counters
Green Cabinets
Two-Tone Cabinetry
1. Green Cabinets Grey kitchens with polished Nickel fixtures were everywhere in 2017, but here’s the evolution. In keeping with a return to nature, green is emerging as the hot hue of choice. To keep it liveable, it’s often given a slight muddy undertone for a heritage flavor. The beauty of this shade is that it enhances the warmth of brass fixtures and makes light counters look crisp in comparison.
2. Dark Counters Speaking of counters according to house and home, scratch a little deeper than granite and you’ll find soapstone emerging as a dark horse this year. With its soft, honed finish (which doesn’t require wiping every few seconds to eradicate fingerprints), it’s naturally resistant to bacteria build-up and has subtle veining with just enough depth for major drama. I wanted soapstone two years ago for my kitchen - bit hard to find here in Kerry, though.
3. Herringbone Floors On the floor front, herringbone is continuing to trend because it adds an instant air of European refinement and history. This trend is taking on a slightly greyed finish making the wood look even more mellow and well-aged, which tend to suit any colour kitchen.
4. Range Like, Vent Hooods Where as before you bought your hood with your cooker or built it into your kitchen in quite a traditional style, we are seeing more cooker hoods taking on their own style colour or finish to become a vocal point for your kitchen.
5. Statement Stoves Whether you have a country kitchen or not, the statement stove is still in trend so get that Aga or Rangemasteer you always wanted. They’re here to stay and perfect with your statement hood!
6. Vintage Rugs The hard surfaces and gleaming appliances in kitchens can make them feel a tad antiseptic. We are seeing rugs making an apperance in the best dressed kitchens. Take a look at the queen of Instagram Lisa Dawson’s amazing rug in her kitchen. Hand-crafted pieces such as antique kilim rugs introduce a soft texture underfoot when cooking and add touch of pattern and color.
7. Open Display Islands While islands were once crammed with as many appliances and storage as possible, there’s an artfulness to choosing just a few select items to display on open shelves. It makes the kitchen seem more like a living room (which it often doubles as when entertaining).
8. Two-Tone Cabinetry Dark lower cabinets with white uppers have been a hot trend, but this year it’s about a combo of different materials. We are seeing wooden cabinets or drawer fronts adding warmth to an often clinical room, as well as painted islands. For all those who love white kitchens, this is a great way to mix it up and incorporate another color. We’re seeing lots of statement island colours popping up.
9: Pantry Walls Pantries are a huge trend in kitchens for the last few years but unless you have one or are starting newbuild, they’re hard to retrofit, so the pantry wall is taking over. A whole wall of floor to ceiling cabinets provide great sorage as well as looking less busy than the origanal top and bottom cabinets. I had mine made narrower than a traditional kitchen cabinet which makes everything easier to get at, and is space saving as well.

Interior 2018
TREND Individuality Ambience
The pink walls are a bit of an unusual choice for many, but it is all about individual style and reflecting your own identity in interiors these days. It’s all about those little details that help to achieve a welcoming ambience and bring a sense of personality to the interior design scheme. It is by displaying the collectibles, adding pattern and being different in your decorating choices that you make a house a home.
Balance The pink kitchen brings harmony to the design scheme. The balance is achieved by introducing grey units, stainless steel appliances and wood effect tile. The pale granite worktop gives a sparkle and lifts the space.
Warmth The grey can look a bit drab used on its own, it needs some colour to lift it up. The chrome handles on the units add a sense of sophistication. The tiles are laid because they are a good heat conductor when used with underfloor heating. Otherwise they can be very cold in the Irish climate. This is a new build but it has got that desired “lived in feeling” right, everything has it’s place. I think that whoever said that, “Great things never came out of comfort zones,” had a valid point. Why should we go to the barre, you ask? The barre is a tool, a source of external support and resistance. It leads to achieving better body balance, initiating deeper muscle engagement and stronger, healthier joints. The muscles will SAFELY burn and shake through lengthening Pilates-influenced exercises. Then, just when those muscles want a break, they get it - we shift focus to your HEART with a cardiovascular boxing workout. These shifts in exercise make for a well rounded, low impact, interval training BARRE program. PILOXING’S signature ½ pound (250 grams) weighted gloves can be worn from start to finish, further intensifying the experience. Happy joints, strong muscles, healthy heart – that’s why.

Garden Magic
The Time To Sow Has Come!
Everywhere you look (well maybe not everywhere) you see gardeners; trowel in one hand, packets of seed in the other, with a blissful grin on their faces… It’s finally here! The time to sow has come! All those hours spent looking at online catalogues and staring at displays in garden centres – well, now is the time for action! Here are a few pieces of advice for successful growing. Always sterilise seed trays which have been previously used. This is so important as diseases and fungi can remain dormant for years. Make sure the temperature is correct and on cold nights cover your seeds and seedlings with horticultural fleece or bubble wrap. Take care to tuck in all the edges as air moves! Read the instructions on the seed packets and follow them. Some seeds will need light to germinate, while others need darkness. When covering them with compost use a sieve to eliminate any lumps or, alternatively, use vermiculite. Vermiculite is a silicate material which is heat treated to form accordion like structures. It is light and spongy and absorbs water. When it does, it expands to form long wormlike pieces, giving it its name. Vermiculite in Latin means ‘to breed worms’. The fantastic thing about vermiculite is the fact that it is sterile and inert. What this means for the gardener is that fungi etc. will not take hold on it. Used as
covering when sowing seeds, it is the number one way to prevent that soul-destroying phenomenon, damping off. Damping off is when you have happy seedlings which all of a sudden collapse. This is due to many things, not one specific thing. It can be kept under control by good practice, using clean tools, sterilising trays and so on. It can also be kept at bay by having good air circulation, and by using vermiculite as a top dressing. It will insulate, so keeping temperatures around the base of the plant from fluctuating too much, as well as preventing fungi taking hold. Out in the garden things are growing at a steady rate, despite the cold spells. Tulips and muscari are coming up and many herbaceous plant are also making an appearance. One of my favourite spring time bulbs are Fritillaria, specifically, the Snake’s head fritillaria. The name comes from the Latin, fritillus, meaning dice-box, probably alluding to the beautiful, delicate diamond pattern on it’s petals. The foliage is grass-like and the flowers come up about 30cm and are a drooped bell shape. The flowers have a very delicate appearance, though they are tough! They thrive in damp conditions and naturalise quite happily. Every year they appear in our lawn, seemingly from nowhere, and every year they hold the promise of a new season of growth and gardening!

Audi Teases Tesla-Bashing Pure-Electric Flagship
Embattled Audi boss Rupert Stadler used this week’s annual conference to announce a swooping, sexy, battery-electric flagship for the Audi brand that will be on sale by 2020. The four-door e-tron GT will be sold through the Audi Sport (maiden name: Quattro) high-performance offshoot and will be the Audi brand’s third full EV. The Audi Sport e-tron GT has already been given the green light for production, based on the platform and electric-vehicle technology of the Audi e-tron and e-tron Sportback crossovers. But the e-trons aren’t the only zero-emission Audis headed for production, with Audi also confirming a limited number of hydrogen fuel-cell cars for 2020.
MINI Reveals Pure-Electric Classic Mini has revealed a pure-electric version of the original Mini at the New York motor show this week. The reveal of a retro-mod based on the classic Mini follows a decision by the British car maker to build anticipation for the brand’s first pure-electric production car that goes on sale next year. Based on a late-nineties version
of the British design icon, the little Mini was said to have been completely restored before its 1300cc engine and gearbox were dumped for the pure-electric powertrain. The small Mini is claimed to have a range of 105km, thanks to its 30kWh lithium battery cell that’s thought to take up most of the tiny boot space. There’s no 0-100km/h
time but Mini says the classic precursor to a modern Supermini has a top speed of 120km/h. Sadly, the British carmaker says the little Mini EV is a one-off designed for the American car show and there are no plans for Mini to branch out into reengineering or restoring its past masters as many manufacturers have taken to in recent years.
Skoda To Launch Five Electrified Cars Within Two Years Skoda has confirmed it will introduce five electrified vehicles by the end of 2020. The new commitment by the Czech carmaker will see two electric cars and three plug-in hybrids launch in less than two years. Already confirmed to launch in 2019 is a plug-in version of the Superb, to be followed by
a pure-electric version of the Volkswagen Up-based Citigo-e. Next, a production version of the pure-electric Vision E will launch in 2020, based on the Volkswagen Group’s all-new dedicated MEB platform. Two more electrified models arriving in the next two years are likely to share the same powertrain with the Superb
– those are likely to be plug-in hybrid versions of the Octavia and Kodiaq. Previously, Skoda declared it would introduce 10 electrified cars before 2025, with five of those now confirmed to arrive by 2020; the rest are set to be launched between 2020 and 2025.

Kerry Average House Prices Rise 1.2% In First Three Months The price of the average three-bed semi in Kerry rose by 1.2% to €212,500 in the first three months of the year, according to the latest national survey carried out by Real Estate Alliance. And after prices increased by 3.9% in the last 12 months, local agents are reporting good activity at the top of the market but a shortage in supply of suitable family homes. The REA Average House Price Survey concentrates on the actual sale price of Ireland’s typical stock home, the threebed semi, giving an up-to-date picture of the property market in towns and cities countrywide to the close of last week. “The upper end of the market is seeing more activity for the first time in a while and houses over €400,000 are selling well,” said Donal Culloty of REA Coyne & Culloty Killarney. In Tralee, Eddie Barrett of REA North’s reports that there is good demand, but a shortage of supply. The average semi-detached house nationally now costs €229,111, the Q1 REA Average House Price Survey has found – a rise of 1.5% on the Q4 2017 figure of €225,806. Overall, the average house price across the country rose by 9.1% over the past 12 months – indicating that the market is steadying after the 11.3% overall rise in 2017. The rate of increase in three-bed semi-detached home prices in Dublin slowed to just 0.5% in the first three months of the year. After rising by 12.5% in 2017, the average price in the capital
has increased by just €2,000 in the opening quarter and now stands at €440,000 – exactly twice the Central Bank’s €220,000 mortgage deposit threshold. The rate of increase in three-bed semi-detached home prices in Dublin has now slowed to 2% over the past six months, compared to an increase of 4.5% in the opening three months of 2017. “The Dublin market has become quite price sensitive, even though we are seeing healthy demand and good liquidity with plenty of mortgage lending,” said REA spokesperson Barry McDonald. “What we may be seeing, after the rapid increases of recent years, are the Central Bank mortgage lending restrictions imposing an upper level on purchasing power for some buyers. “We are experiencing strong demand across the board, and homes are reaching sale agreed in just five weeks across the country – which is good news for both buyers and vendors.” The commuter counties continued their recent steady growth with a 1.4% increase in Q1, with the average house now selling for €235,900 – a rise of €3,000 in the first three months of the year. The country’s major cities outside Dublin recorded a combined Q1 rise of 2.1%, with an average three-bed semi costing €243,750. The highest increases were seen in the rest of the country’s towns, which experienced a 2.9% rise in Q1 to an average of €150,050.

Tony’s Family Maria, Sean, Bill, Mary, Nieces, Nephews, Grand Nephew wish to thank the following: Eileen his home help, she was the only one who could make his porridge properly. His nurses who were on hand daily. His Night Nurse Kate O Connell who made the darkest hours easier. His Friends Rita, Richard, Vincent, Greg, Liz, Veronica & Eileen. Heartfelt Thanks to Dr Donal Coffey, Dr Sheehan and The Palliative Care Team Tralee & Killarney. Thanks to Timmy, Mary & Michael O Shea who helped guide us through the funeral stages and were on hand in a calm & professional manner at all times. Thanks to all the many kind neighbours & friends who called to his house to say Goodbye.
In memory of our good friend Kieran O’Sullivan, late of Killarney. We shall not stand at your Grave and weep, You are not there, you do not sleep; You are the thousand Winds that blow You are the diamond Glints on snow You are the sunlight On ripened grain, You are the soft Autumnal rain. When we awaken in The morning hush, You are the warm uplifting rush Of soaring birds in circled flight You are the stars that shine at night So we do not stand at your Grave and cry You are not there you did not die. Deeply missed by your friends Mike McSweeney, Connie Murphy, Denis O’Leary, John G. O’Leary, John O’Connor, David Sheehan, Pa Sugrue, Tony Sugrue.

In loving memory of a dear father Mike Cooper late of 24 Ardshanavooley, Killarney who passed away on the 3rd April, 2006. A bouquet of beautiful memories Sprayed with a million tears Wishing God could have spared you If just for a few more years. It does not take a special day For us to think of you Each Mass we hear, each prayer we say Is offered up for you. We cannot bring the old days back When we were all together The family chain is broken now But memories live forever. May he rest in peace dear Jesus In Thy Heavenly home above With the Sacred Heart of Jesus In His own eternal love. Along the road to yesterday That leads us straight to you Are memories of happy days Together we once knew. A silent grief that’s in our hearts No human eye can trace For many a broken heart is hid Beneath a smiling face. Always remembered by your loving sons Danny, Mark, Mike, Vince and Colm, daughters Geraldine and Karen, sons-inlaw, daughters-in-law and grandchildren.
JESUS May your Sacred Heart Lord Jesus, be praised, glorified and honoured throughout the whole world now and forever. Repeat this 3 times. C.D.

Us Take A Look At Ourselves Fixture: Intermediate Championship Group 4 Spa v Gneeveguilla Sunday, April 1 at 2.30pm (Derreen) Hi Dan. Thanks for talking to me. No bother. It’s time for another crack at the Intermediate. What do you think of the new group format? I think it’s a great idea really because you’re training with the focus on three or four weeks of definite games, compared to other years when it was a bit scattered. I think it’s a good improvement. The Intermediate has been Spa’s priority for a long time now. Why is it so important to the club? It’s the biggest competition we’re in as a club so you’re always aiming to win the biggest things, and every club wants to win a county title as well so I suppose that’s why it’s so important. Especially after winning in 2009, fellas want to do it again. We’re in Division 1 now so we wouldn’t mind taking the step up to senior as well. You made three finals between 2012 and 2015 but lost in the early rounds the past two years. How disappointing was that? Yeah, I’ve lost two finals myself already and then last year we lost in the first round which was very disappointing. We weren’t used to losing in the first round. But it made us take a look at ourselves and what we were doing. There were teams passing us out and we had to see what was going wrong. The team is under new management this year (Ivor Flynn, Kieran Herlihy, Brian Gleeson and Neily Kerins). How much of a difference have they made? They’re doing a great job. They’re very professional about whatever they do and everyone’s enjoying training. The numbers are better than they’ve ever been in my time with Spa so they must be doing something right. The club recently completed work on a new floodlit pitch. That must be a welcome addition. It will definitely have an impact on our progress because for the last few years we’ve been training under what are nearly like street lights on the main pitch. This pitch with the floodlights is a serious asset to have.
The Intermediate has been Spa’s Holy Grail for a number of years but early exits in 2016 and 2017 have raised a lot of difficult questions. Ahead of their championship opener on Sunday, Adam Moynihan spoke to club captain Dan O’Donoghue. Spa have made an excellent start to the County League with big wins over Rathmore and An Ghaeltacht. What has been the most pleasing aspect of your current form? Yeah, they were two massive wins. Against Rathmore we were drawing at half time and against An Ghaeltacht we were losing at half time, so I think the overall performances over 60 minutes… We never gave up, we kept Senior Club Championship battling away and that’s kind of been lacking in Group 1 other years. The way we are grinding out wins is very pleasing. Sat March 31 at 6.45pm Gneeveguilla, who are currently in Division 4, Austin Stacks v Kerins O Rahilly’s (Austin Stack are your first opponents in the Intermediate. Oskar Friends Share Spoils As Crokes Get First Win Words: Adam Moynihan
Off the field, the GAA clubs of Glenflesk and Kilcummin came together in recent weeks to collaborate on a novel fund-raising project that saw members recreate scenes from famous movies and TV shows. It was great to see two fierce rivals join forces in such a positive manner but the armistice was set to one side for an hour last Sunday as the sides came head-to-head in Division 2 of the County League. Fittingly, both clubs walked away with a share of the spoils. Glenflesk started well in Barraduff and a goal from the dangerous Darragh Roche gave them an early advantage. Kilcummin finished the first half strongly, however, and a Damien O’Leary goal along with points from Noel Duggan had them two points up at the break. Kilcummin led by two midway through the second but after substitute Shane McSweeney got the road, a pair of points from Roche drew Glenflesk level. Donal Maher gave the visitors the lead very late on but Roche was on hand to convert a long range free to save the day for Glenflesk. Final score: 1-11 apiece. Up in Division 1, holders Dr Crokes picked up their first win of the new season as they ran out 2-14 to 0-10 winners against Beaufort. The scoreline is emphatic enough but, to be fair, it doesn’t do
Beaufort justice. They were extremely competitive in the first half, especially at the back where the likes of James O’Reilly and Mike Breen impressed. They could even have been in front at the interval but for two squandered goal opportunities. As it turned out, scores from Tony Brosnan (four), Brian Looney (two) and Kieran O’Leary had Crokes up one, 7-6, by the half. A huge kick by centre back Mike Breen (his second) and some accurate shooting from Fergal Hallissey kept Beaufort in touch early in the second but Crokes kept tacking on scores at the other end. Pat O’Shea’s side were beginning to click into gear and when corner back John Payne made a rare sally forward to register a point in the 53rd minute, Crokes led by five. Moments later, youngster David Shaw was left one-onone and when he goaled from close range, the game was over. There was still time for one more piece of magic, however, as Tony Brosnan picked the ball up around the 45 and rifled an inch-perfect, 40-metre, outside-of-the-left pass over a defender’s head and straight into the hands of the waiting Kieran O’Leary. Leary coolly
finished to round off what was, in the end, a comfortable Crokes win. Newly-promoted Beaufort will be disappointed with the end result but they gave the Crokes forwards a very tough time of it in the first half. In fact, they showed promise all over the pitch. It’s early days yet, of course, but there was certainly enough evidence there to suggest that they’ll be a tough matchup for any team in the division.

Cup Preview:
Athletic Face Geeha, Celts Go West Mastergeeha will be no pushovers, says Killarney Athletic’s Adam Moynihan
The last 16 of the Greyhound Bar KO Cup takes place this weekend and there’s a local derby on Easter Monday as we host Mastergeeha at 2pm in Woodlawn. We’re up against it to retain our league title but I suppose we have as good a chance as anybody in the cup. We’ve beaten Geeha twice already this season so we’ll be favourites but this is our first fixture in over a month and there are bound to be a few cobwebs. They’re coming off the back of a huge 2-0 win away in Listowel as well so their confidence will be high. Geeha are a tough enough team to shake. When we played them last month, we went up 2-0 but Chris Egan pulled one back before half time and, at that point, we were definitely in a game. We eventually
won 4-1 but we’ll see what kind of shape we’re in on Monday. The two clubs should probably come together and agree that everyone is going on the beer for the long weekend because if one team stays off it, it will be unfair. The tie of the round is undoubtedly Dingle Bay Rovers v Celtic, which takes place in Gallarus at the same time on Monday. Dingle will be desperate to mete out some kind of revenge having fallen to two very heavy defeats to Celtic in the league, but considering the form Eoghan Donnellan’s men are in, they’ll have their work cut out. From Athletic’s perspective it would be great if they both lost but I suppose that is unlikely. Celtic came from behind to beat Fenit in the league last weekend with Cathal O’Shea, Peter McCarthy and Stephen McCarthy all finding the target. That result has left Fenit with a lot to do if they want to make the league final - they’re currently nine points behind us and Dingle, although they do have a couple of games in hand. the business end of the season. Dingle defeated Castleisland 3-1 on Monday evening in Tralee so Castleisland are up against it now as well. There’s still plenty of time left, though, and there are bound to be a
few twists and turns before the final places are decided. In the meantime, everyone’s focus will be on advancing to the quarter final of Kerry’s oldest and most prestigious cup competition.

It was back to the PRO14 last weekend for the four Irish provinces ahead of the return of the European Cup this weekend. Connacht hosted Edinburgh at the Showgrounds and lost 22 points to 29, while Ulster were away to Cardiff Blues and also lost, on a 35-17 scoreline, pretty much summing up their season to date. On Saturday night Leinster travelled to the Liberty Stadium to take on the Ospreys and also lost on a 32-18

Munster Host Toulon In European Cup scoreline. Three losses from three and Munster were in no mood to make it 4/4! There’s a little bite between Munster and the Scarlets following the two defeats meted out to the Munster men last season, particularly in the PRO12 final. Munster were missing their big guns, some of whom went to Dubai for a well-deserved break following the fantastic 6 Nations. Johan Van Graan’s men had a lot to prove following some recent poor performances and
bitterly disappointing losses. However, the men in red did not disappoint the Thomond Park faithful winning 19 points to 7 with tries from Hart, Copeland and Wootton. Copeland won the Man of the Match award in the week the news broke that he had signed for Connacht. He was a fantastic servant for Munster. Best of luck with the move west! The talking point of the match was the very dubious call by the TMO to disallow a try for double
movement. Vilified on Twitter as the worst decision ever, it certainly was eye-boggling but, thankfully, it didn’t affect the end score. This Saturday, Munster host Toulon at Thomond Park in the quarter final of the European Cup. Tickets are like gold dust and a cracker awaits. Leinster host Saracens in the other quarter final including an Irish side. Let’s hope for another historic weekend for Irish rugby!

Killarney Camogie Club: FÉILE 2018 HERE WE COME! Another superb win by our U14 team in Tralee. In round two of our Feile B qualifier, Killarney played Tralee Parnells for the second time this week. The conditions were a massive improvement on last Monday with the sun shining brightly combined with mild temperatures. With the warmer weather, better camogie was played. Tralee were a different side today with some strategic changes to the midfield and back line to try to minimise our scoring potential. It took over 10 minutes before Killarney got their first score with a superb goal from Alannah. With the first score under our belt, Killarney’s confidence started to build with plenty of creativity and skill being shown in the forward line. Midfield held strong, collecting the loose ball and feeding the ball back into the forwards. Our defence were solid when called upon, minimising any scoring opportunity. Once again, all our girls contributed to a great win. The hard work since January was definitely rewarded today.

Around The World
Tiger: The Rise and Fall… And Rise Words: Adam Moynihan As incredible as Tiger Woods’ story has been to date, winning the 2018 Masters at Augusta National would surely be the greatest achievement in his long and eventful career. I think the vast majority of golf fans would love to see it happen but is it just wishful thinking on our part, or does Tiger actually have a shot? Woods will arrive at Augusta on the back of consecutive top-five finishes at the Valspar Championship and Arnold Palmer Invitational (he’s not in this week’s Houston Open field) so momentum does appear to be on his side. But the 42-year-old hasn’t won a major since the US Open at Torrey Pines in 2008. A year later, those infamous extramarital indiscretions came to light and Woods’ career, and personal life, quickly fell into disarray. In December 2009, he announced that he would be taking an indefinite break from the game of golf and the demise of the great Tiger Woods had well and truly begun. Despite returning to finish fourth at the 2010 Masters, Tiger went the entire year without registering a single win for the first time in his career. 2011 started badly but again he found solace at Augusta where he finished 5th. Leg injuries hampered him throughout the summer, however, and eventually Woods fell to 58th in the world rankings. The following year saw the return of the real Tiger
Woods. The American dominated the early part of the season, winning the Farmers Insurance Open, the WGC and the Arnold Palmer (again). That win propelled him back to the top of the world rankings and which prompted Nike to release a controversial ad with the tagline “winning takes care of everything.” Tiger, it seemed, was back. Back at Augusta, Woods was in contention on the final day but a two-stroke penalty for an illegal drop in his second round proved costly in the end as he finished T-4. When he won The Players Championship in May 2013, he had reached four season wins quicker than he had ever done previously but any hopes of further glory were scuppered by an elbow injury that led to him recording his worst ever professional score (13 over) at the US Open. He took a break for a spell and got back to winning ways later in the season as a PGA record-equalling second round of 61 helped him to victory at the WGC. He hasn’t won on tour since. A back injury hindered him in the opening stages of the 2014 season and after undergoing surgery in March he announced that he would miss the Masters for the first time since 1994. Later that year, he finished 69th at the British Open and missed the cut at the PGA Championship. Another back injury forced him out of action in February 2015 and when he returned, again at the
Masters, he finished T-17. Tiger then missed the cut at the US Open and British Open, the first time ever he had missed the cut at consecutive majors. He underwent another surgery in September and missed every single major of 2016. Tiger Woods, one of the most successful players in the history of the game, appeared to be finished. A fourth back surgery - to alleviate back and leg pain – in December 2016 forced him out off the tour for 15 months. He participated in a couple of events in 2017 and although he was cleared medically to play at the Masters, he declined the invitation on the grounds that he wasn’t “tournament ready”. In 2018, however, the Tiger has started to purr again. His form through six events is impressive (T-9, T-23, Cut, 12, T-2, T-5). In fact, heading into next week’s Masters, the five-time winner is 9/1 favourite with the bookmakers to reclaim the coveted green jacket. Dustin Johnson, Justin Thomas and Rory McIlroy are joint second favourites on 10/1 while 2015 champion Jordan Spieth follows at 12/1. Woods is a divisive figure and I’m sure some people would stop short of putting his tilt at another Masters in the ‘fairytale’ category. But, purely in sporting terms alone, it would be great to see the red shirt in contention once again come Sunday evening. Golf hasn’t been the same without him.
Sebastian Vettel Wins F1 Season Opener The new season kicked off at the Albert Park circuit in Melbourne last weekend and Sebastian Vettel of Ferrari took first place over a bewildered Lewis Hamilton. Hamilton was dominant all weekend and Mercedes’ defending champion looked quietly confident that his attempt to take a fifth title would get off to a winning start. Vettel, however, opened the year with a win, just as he did last season. After the British driver dominated from pole for 20 of the race’s 58 laps, Vettel took the lead by taking
advantage of pitting under the virtual safety car and emerging in front. Mercedes had pitted Hamilton on lap 20 to match the stop by Kimi Raikkonen, who was in second and finished in third place. At the time Hamilton had a comfortable lead on Vettel. Ferrari kept Vettel out, however, and when Haas retired at the side of the track – which triggered the virtual safety car on lap 26 - Ferrari took full advantage of the cars on track being forced to drive to a slower lap time, enabling them to send the German
out in the lead. Hamilton was unable to get past Vettel once the German had emerged from the pits. Hamilton’s confusion after the race was understandable. He had led from pole and looked entirely in control up to that point. Behind the leaders, Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo made a recovery to finish
in fourth place from eighth on the grid and although his teammate Max Verstappen could manage only sixth after a spin, their car looked strong. McLaren enjoyed their best result since 2016 with Fernando Alonso making the most of their new Renault engine to claim fifth. Nico Hulkenberg’s Renault was in seventh in front of Valtteri Bottas who had recovered from 15th on the grid, with the second McLaren of Stoffel Vandoorne in ninth and the second Renault of Carlos Sainz in 10th.
