13 Long-Term Rentals Vs 300 On Airbnb Words: Adam Moynihan

Advertiser ney lar
As revealed in last week’s Killarney Advertiser, we are currently in the midst of a crippling rental crisis the likes of which have never been seen in Killarney. Locals and migrants alike are struggling to find suitable accommodation and there appears to be no solution in sight. Rents nationally are significantly higher than they were at the height of the boom and they continue to climb. In Kerry, this quarter showed an 8.9% increase on the same period last year. Incredibly, there are currently just 13 properties available for rent in the Killarney area on Daft.ie (and some of those listed are miles from the town itself). On Airbnb, meanwhile, there are over 300 listings in Killarney. It is virtually impossible to find somewhere to rent long term in the Killarney area. Worryingly, many local businesses now say that they have jobs available but they can’t attract employees because there’s nowhere to house them. Chairperson of the Irish Hotels Federation, Niamh O’Shea, says the issue is affecting many local hotels. “In Killarney in particular, there is a shortage of supply when it comes to accommodation and that is a challenge,” she said. “There aren’t enough houses being built and you also have the scenario where some of those who were in the market have exited in favour of Airbnb. It’s a double-whammy, for want of a better word. “It’s at all levels. You’ll have a demand for residential accommodation for international students coming on a year’s placement, but equally it affects more senior positions. We’ve struggled to find suitable family accommodation for people looking to move their career to Killarney.” Some hotels, most notably the Hotel Europe, have taken matters into their own hands by providing their own accommodation for staff but Ms O’Shea says that’s not an option for everyone. “That’s a considerable investment (€3 million) by the Hotel Europe but that just goes to show the level of the shortages. It’s not something that’s feasible for all hotels, and it is a longer process with planning and building. This is an immediate problem and it’s one we’ve experienced all summer.” Ms O’Shea says it’s reassuring to see that there are some developments that have started in
Killarney but “it will take time before we see a relief.” “In terms of Airbnb, I do feel that there needs to be some regulation both in planning law and taxation policy so that it’s a level playing field.” I also spoke to local businessman Cormac Casey about the issue and he confirmed that the current situation is a “nightmare” for business. “It’s becoming increasingly difficult to attract staff to Killarney,” he said. “Even before you reach the interview stage, you’re at a disadvantage because would-be employees know that accommodation is a problem here. It has reached the stage where we’re actually entertaining the idea of purchasing property, just so we have somewhere for our staff and their families to live. “That’s obviously a major problem because then you’re pumping cash resources into accommodation instead of into the business. It’s a real issue for many businesses in town and something needs to be done.” Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser, estate agent Ted Healy said a number of factors were responsible for the severe lack of available rental properties. “Over the past number of years, more and more landlords have exited the rental market than have entered it,” he said. “There are a number of reasons why this is the case. A large number of investment properties have been repossessed by financial institutions, and a large proportion of landlords have exited the market due to increased costs and taxes associated with renting a property. “The lack of what one would describe as your traditional starter home/investment property (i.e. three-bed semis) has also stifled the rental market. This type of property has not been built in Killarney in the past number of years. Demand is there but supply is not. “As a result of the tight market existing tenants are not moving around as much as they once did. Any tenant happy in a property is not going to give it up. Renters are staying where they are.” This current rental crisis is clearly a major concern for the town and, worryingly, it appears as though there is no quick fix in sight. What do you think? What steps can be taken to improve the situation? Let us know by emailing newsdesk@killarneyadvertiser.
Rubbish Found Dumped At Ross Castle
If this picture doesn’t boil your blood, I don’t know what will. Littering is deplorable anywhere in the world but to see it at such a well-loved local landmark is truly infuriating. The photo, which shows a large bag of what appears to be domestic rubbish strewn across the lawn of Ross Castle, was snapped by concerned local man Daniel O’Donoghue. To their credit, Daniel and his friend collected the litter but, worryingly, they couldn’t find a bin to put it in. The current state of the National Park has been highlighted by the Killarney Advertiser time and again, particularly by our columnist Anne Lucey who recently said that resources in the park are currently lower than they’ve ever been. This shocking photo backs her up but it also speaks to a wider problem. Littering is widespread along our roads and walkways, even in remote areas far removed from residential areas. It seems as though people are going out of their way to dump rubbish illegally. It’s scandalous behaviour and more needs to be done to catch these vandals in the act.
News Briefs ... Report Slams “Dilapidated” UHK Psychiatric Unit The conditions at one of University Hospital Kerry’s main psychiatric units have been slammed in a report carried out by the Mental Health Commission. According to the report, the Reask Ward is often overcrowded, lacks privacy and is in a dilapidated state. The Reask Ward is typically used to house patients from west and south Kerry. Several ligature points (i.e. points from where patients could potentially hang themselves) were found within the unit, while inspectors also raised concerns about a number of general hygiene issues on site.

Jordan Lee at his homecoming on Monday. Pics: Dylan Clifford.
High-Flier Jordan Gets A Hero’s Welcome Killarney youngster Jordan Lee was welcomed back to Killarney with rapturous applause on Monday following his heroics at the European Para Athletic Championships in Berlin. Family, friends, dignitaries and well-wishers gathered at Killarney Cultural Centre to greet the gifted Killarney teenager, whose exploits in Germany have already established him as one of Killarney’s top sportspeople. At just 18 years of age, the sky is the limit for this talented young man. Jordan claimed bronze in the T47 high jump last Thursday by clearing his first attempt of 1.75m. He was unfortunate not to match Spaniard Daniel Perez’s effort of 1.78m in his subsequent jumps but winning bronze in a European competition is no mean feat. The achieve-
ment is made all the more impressive when you consider the fact that Jordan only took the sport up last year. He is coached by Tomás Griffin at Killarney Valley AC. The 18-year-old, who recently completed his Leaving Cert at St Brendan’s College, is no stranger to the big stage: when he was 14 he became the first ever one-handed basketballer to be selected for Ireland. Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser, Jordan confirmed that his sights are firmly set on further glory in Irish colours. “I’m hoping to be selected for the World Championships in Dubai next year,” he said. “Obviously, it’s going to take hard work but if everything was easy, everybody would be doing it. So I’m looking forward to that - that’s my main mission at the moment.”
Music
Liam And Sem Students All Set For Electric Picnic World-renowned musician Liam O’Connor and a talented bunch of musicians from St Brendan’s College will take to the stage this evening at one of Ireland’s biggest music festivals, Electric Picnic. Liam and the boys from the Sem will perform on the Hazel Wood After Dark Stage at the iconic festival, which is held annually at Stradbally in Laois. Other acts set to make an appearance include rapper Kendrick
Lamar, pop star Dua Lipa, dance group The Prodigy and Irish band Walking on Cars. Earlier this year, the Sem’s trad musicians played alongside Liam and Aslan frontman Christy Dignam at a fundraising concert in the college chapel. Liam and Christy made the headlines again as recently as last month when their impromptu gig attracted huge crowds to Plunkett Street in Killarney town centre.

TOWNTALK School Run? More Like A Crawl… Words: Cormac Casey
Well-known Killarney man John Coffey recently celebrated his 99th birthday in novel fashion by enjoying a round of 99s with family and friends. As our picture shows, John, his children Noreen, Dermot and Mary, grandchildren and great-grandchildren gathered at Kate Kearney’s Cottage to mark his milestone birthday. Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser, Noreen said they were blessed with the weather and a great day was had by all. The idea to have 99s came from a family friend
from the USA, Paddy Quigley. Paddy always has a 99 ice cream whenever he visits and when John celebrated his 98th last year, Paddy suggested getting 99s for the 99th. John, who is originally from Beaufort, moved to Lewis Road with his family in 1958. Noreen says he his already looking forward his 100th. Congratulations, John, from everyone at the Killarney Advertiser.
Hall Of Fame
Who Would You Nominate For Killarney’s Hall Of Fame? The Killarney Advertiser’s McShain Campaign has highlighted the great contribution John and Mary McShain made to Killarney while also calling for the pair to be recognised in a suitable fashion. But it seems to have raised another pertinent question: are we doing enough to honour all the great men and women who have given so much to the town? While support for our McShain Campaign has been universal, and we are optimistic that our quest to honour the generous Americans will come to fruition, many of our readers have rightly suggested that there are many other worthy Killarney people who also deserve recognition. The names of great local families who have played a big role in the history of the town have been mentioned, as have entrepreneurs, sports stars and volunteers. There is certainly no shortage of greatness in Killarney and it would be great if we could find some way of honouring all of them. The Order of Innisfallen, which was set up in 2005 to recognise outstanding contributions to the eco-
nomic development of Ireland, has largely failed to capture the imagination. Inductees include actor Michael Fassbender and industrialist Isolde Liebherr, but the likes of Enda Kenny, Daniel O’Donnell and Prince Charles have also received the honour so it can hardly be considered a “local” award. Drawing inspiration from Killarney people like Jerry O’Grady, who suggested a series of monuments along the Mission Road, the Killarney Advertiser’s resident historian Damien Switzer has come up with the idea of creating a Killarney Hall of Fame. Inductees would get a brass plaque with a flat embossed portrait somewhere on the wall along the Mission Road, with their name and a brief description underneath. It sounds like an interesting idea. What do you think? Should there be a Killarney Hall of Fame? And, if so, whom would you nominate? Let us know by emailing newsdesk@killarneyadvertiser. ie.

99s All Around For John’s 99th Birthday
Yesterday both myself and my eldest son were newbies to the secondary school run. A proud dad giving calming, experienced advice to his son as he enters the unknown world of secondary school, as we embark on this maiden secondary school run. From living in the country and attending a country national school, I was not prepared for the absolute gridlock that greeted us. As we sit in gridlock with the school in sight and dad ranting, the voice of calm comes from my son. “Dad, we are nearly there. Calm down.” I have to say, on our eventual arrival I did take a moment to reflect on how well my son handled the situation and calmly went about his business. Obviously, it was my calming influence before the gridlock – that’s what I tell myself. But the fact is my little boy is becoming a young man and dad’s ramblings are just that. As soon as my son is safely deposited at the school gates my thoughts immediately return to my situation. I’m now in the eye of this gridlock. Bloody hell – is this what faces me for the next five years? We have read within the pages of this very publication the traffic torment that is bestowed upon tourists and locals alike during the peak tourist season. We need to spare a thought for parents this week as they resume the chaos that is the town school run. Five large schools in very close proximity, funnelling traffic from numerous different routes to potentially one concentrated area at similar times - albeit staggered to minimise discomfort. Planning can’t be held accountable; even the newest schools were constructed over 35 years ago when students made their way to school by bus and bicycle. On safety grounds, the traffic levels have dramatically increased since then, and understandably cycling is not a suitable option today, coupled with the weight of schoolbags. I can understand the appeal of choosing a secondary school outside Killarney for this very reason. However, that is not the solution. But what is? With the busy tourist season slowly coming to an end, there is a danger that our public representatives will take the opportunity to sweep the ongoing traffic issue under the carpet but this is a year-round problem for the people of Killarney. With all the talk of traffic over the past number of months, no councillor or politician has come to the fore and nothing has been done. Are we expected to wait until March again, and the return of the tourists, before something is done?

The Chatroom Birthday Special

The Chatroom: A Year On The Couch It’s a big week in Killarney Advertiser HQ this week as The Chatroom celebrates its first birthday! We’ve had such great fun over the last year inviting well-known people in for a chat. Enda Walshe and Niall O’Callaghan got the ball rolling on the first episode and from there the guests kept coming. We even snuck in a few celebrities like Santa, Keith Barry, Jake Carter, and GAA legends Aidan O’Mahony and Brendan
Kealy. We’ve been up Carrantouhill, singing in a car, admiring Killarney from a helicopter with a motor journalist legend, in a boat with Killarney Water Rescue, on location on a local movie set, at Loreto National School with the JEP Winners, and so much more! You can watch back all of the previous Chatrooms on our website www. killarneyadvertiser.ie. For our first birthday we’ve decided to spoil you with not one, not two, but three chatrooms this week!
The One And Only Colm Cooper The man, the myth, the legend! We were absolutely delighted to welcome the one and only Colm Cooper to The Chatroom this week. The newly appointed Assistant Manager of AIB Killarney gave Kieran his thoughts on Kerry’s somewhat disappointing season, Eamonn Fitzmaurice’s resignation and his views on the tal-
ent coming through this year in the team - in particular, one David Clifford. You can catch this Chatroom with the man who many believe is the best to ever play the game of football tonight at 9pm on our website www. killarneyadvertiser.ie and on our Facebook page.
Meet Killarney’s Newest Hero Fresh from his massive success at the WPA European Championships last week, Killarney’s High Jump bronze medallist hero Jordan Lee called into The Chatroom with Doireann Ní Mhuircheartaigh from Tralee’s Cara Centre to tell us all about his experience at the European Championships, his homecoming last Monday night and his first sport, basketball.
Doireann tells us all about the great work that the Cara Centre are doing and Jordan also tells us what’s next for him. Don’t miss this Chatroom episode with Killarney’s newest hero. You can watch it right now on our website www.killarneyadvertiser.ie and on our Facebook page.
Kingdom Comedy Club Bring The LOLs Con O’Sullivan and Tony Dunne from Kingdom Comedy Club popped in this week to bring the LOLs and to tell us all about their upcoming comedy show this Saturday, September 1 in the Eviston House Hotel, which will be in aid of Killarney Rugby Club. The Killarney Advertiser’s Kieran Healy was try-
ing to keep in the laughter during the interview but he failed miserably! The guys chatted about how Kingdom Comedy Club came about and what comedians to expect at tomorrow night’s laugh fest! You can catch this latest episode of The Chatroom right now on our website www. killarneyadvertiser.ie or on our Facebook page.

Columnist Anne Lucey gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry and beyond
People Blame The Church But Where Was The State? Pope Francis’ day-and-a-half visit to this country enjoyed “a tight line” across all media, social and traditional, Twitter or newspaper, at home and abroad. “Over-shadowed by scandal,” was the conclusion by the mother and baby homes, and by the priests’ and nuns’ sexual abuse of children here and elsewhere. The tight line, or meridian if you like, was drawn and measured on the papal visit of 1979, which, by the way, was 39 years ago. In 1979, X number came out to see the Pope. In 2018, Y number did. Therefore the church is dead and there is a radical change in Ireland. Of course the problem with this flawed logic is that you assume the church was alive in ‘79 and further that it is dead now. Both assumptions are wrong, in my opinion. Catholicism in Ireland among the young was by no means uniform, or even particularly strong, “forty years ago”. A lot of us went to Galway and elsewhere for the show. And one of the key factors of the 1979 visit of John Paul II was ignored entirely last week: celebrity culture or what was then known as ‘superstar’. Pope John Paul was a mere 18 months in office when he came to Ireland. This was among the first countries he visited. We were enormously flattered. The country had two or three half airports. We were not used to popes travelling. Irish people had not travelled much at the time either. There was no Ryanair. It was all Aer Lingus. He was the first non-Italian pope too. A pope was revered by our parents as God on Earth and he was the prime target for Paisley in the raging North who called all of us in the south “Papists”. We had pictures of severe pointy-hatted popes with gold glasses in the main rooms of our houses. Posters of pop stars were appearing, and a new smiling pope was emerging in a fairly ordinary hat! To the teenage mind, in 1979, Pope John Paul II may well have been on a par with Gilbert or Donny Osmond. And to a politically engaged young person, this man was just back from Poland stirring things up against the communists and Russians. A freedom fighter, no less! I would actually argue that the turnout of last week is about right, if you take away the celebrity status, the spectacle. The group who attended the Phoenix Park and Knock in 2018 is about the same core group as you had in 1979. The rest of us, with only two TV channels, were there for other reasons – maybe even the craic. This time the hangers on had other things to do. But there is another aspect which I found a bit more worrying. And this is the single-mindedness of the blame game that is going on. We seem to be at the same thing as we were at with the Brits for the first 100 years of this State: laying all of our problems at the feet of one group. 1979 was also the year, on the 27th of August, that the Provisional IRA assassinated Lord Mountbatten. The Provos blamed the Brits for all the ills of the Irish and ironically they were helped by Paisley and his Pope bashing too in this. Brit-bashing was, and maybe still is, a blanket we all sheltered under at times. The Brits did terrible things. But they weren’t the only ones. And they
Last week we looked at the past and saw only one part of the picture also did some great things. The Irish did terrible things too, and when they got their hands on the State they did terrible things particularly to the poorer people, and the social outcasts, and women. The point I am trying to make is red anger for nothing or the red mist that blinds - and to me, last week’s target was too narrow. I am intrigued as to why there weren’t questions raised about the role of the State in the mother and baby homes last week? Why the dots were not joined? The State did not allow contraception, except on a doctor’s prescription. The homes continued right up to the late 1990s. Look at the three decades battle to have any kind of abortion allowed. Last week we looked at the past and saw only one part of the picture. But where was the State and its representatives? The institutions were not totally isolated. Medical people, gardaí and politicians almost certainly knew what was going on. I’d put money that some of these people knew suspected sexual abuse too. Back then it was called “interfering”… Where I grew up, I was very close to an old woman who used to mind me occasionally. She had no electricity, yet she had what I considered the cleanest
house on the road, smelling of strong carbolic soap. She had nationalist green cupboards and could sing songs from 1798 that few remembered. She was an avid radio listener and more importantly she was a magnificent storyteller. Every so often, this woman, who was crippled from arthritis, would try to talk about the time she was put into the orphanage in Killarney, along with her sister and brother who both emigrated to England young. That was one story she never managed to tell. It would choke her up. She never went to mass. I assumed it was because of her arthritis. But one day I remember when the local priest, a stout, red-faced man with a cap, who parked his car at the gate, called to her. I believe it was over sheltering a farm worker, a man no less, in a caravan near her house. Leaning on her stick, she chastised him from the top of her steps. He did not come past the gate. Even the red hen ran. The scene has never left me. The powerful priest never returned, though the hen did. And that was I reckon the early 1970s, when we were all supposed to be so holy and so cowed. The point is that if a woman leaning on a stick, versed in the egalitarian republicanism of 1798, had the raw courage to speak out to a powerful priest, why did it take the rest of us in this free State so long? There were people far more powerful than her who might have got together and stopped the scandalous treatment of poor women and children. It might not have been easy, it would certainly have been uncomfortable, but I wish we had had more like Noel Browne and Donogh O’Malley. Last week left me with a lot of unease: instead of examining the wider context, we had mockery of the Pope on twitter, we had juvenile jokes and bad language and photos of the Pope taken from the rear end – and a one-angle story. It disturbs me to think we may be going down the same road we went before: blaming it all on one identifiable group in the red mist of anger when, as mature people, we need to put it all on the table.

Now speaking of blaming it all on one sector of society. If I were to write a popular novel right now, this would be the plot: a family is made homeless in modern Ireland after they can’t repay the mortgage and the bank has sold the property to a “vulture fund”, which in turn puts it on the market. Then the house is picked up for next to nothing by an individual, who has had the opportunity to save money or who may even have inherited the money, or who is in good standing with the banks who are lending again and he has been given a small mortgage on the property now. He asks for rent. A high price. The family can’t pay the rent and the mortgage. He has done all his paper work, ticked all the boxes. There is the going rate for rents for property nearby. 90 days to Christmas exactly is the notice. Business is business. They will be out on the street on Christmas Eve. It is tough, but this is Ireland and anyway why isn’t the council building more houses or giving them the money for the rent is the reasoning. But there is a Dickensian twist, it is a Christmas Carol: another local man, fairly well off, also has houses and lo and behold on Christmas Eve he arrives with a goose, or maybe a turkey, the keys of one of the several houses, and a holiday voucher for Lanzarote because this is 2018. It is not 1889. Now what am I saying? I saw two separate attacks on the homeless crisis from Fianna Fáil last week. John McGuinness went square for the banks and the vulture funds. South Kerry councillor Norma Moriarty’s was more interesting: She is going for planning. It is not acceptable
Building more & more houses is speculation that rents can continue to rise, she says. And it is harder and harder for young people, “especially young couples to secure affordable accommodation in the county towns”. Cllr Moriarty says the average rent in Kerry is €760 a month. She is basing this on a property website. (Well, in Killarney it is almost twice that now.) Her solution is to streamline the planning process to ensure more and more houses are built “or the Kingdom will lose a whole generation”. I find it nauseating, with respect to Cllr Moriarty, that the thing that caused the bust, under Fianna Fáil in government and encouraged by Fine Gael, for which generations of our young will be paying back, is being put forward as a solution now. Building more and more houses is speculation and is not enough to stop exorbitant prices. It sounds good that unless we do “we are losing a whole generation”. This is just rhetoric. I think my “novel” has the best solution. When all the structures have let us down, the decent local man cuts across all the waffle and all the structures… and arrives with the keys.
News Briefs ...
KCC Lodge Application For South Kerry Greenway There was good news for Kerry tourism this week as Kerry County Council lodged a planning application to develop a 32km greenway between Glenbeigh and Renard. The proposed South Kerry Greenway would run parallel to the Ring of Kerry. The council says that the scheme impacts on 222 landholdings and 197 landowners on the Iveragh Peninsula. The planned route has been subject to public consultation and the council said it will continue to engage with landowners throughout the process. It added that a dedicated information line
will be made available. The three-metre-wide paved surface greenway would run from Renard, southwest of Caherciveen, to the townland of Faha, which is west of Glenbeigh. The route will mainly follow the corridor of the abandoned Great Southern railway line, with off-line sections being built on adjacent lands and local roads. The project will include the provision of carparks, and the upgrading of some existing bridges and tunnels such as the Cahersiveen Railway Bridge, Gleesk Viaduct and tunnels at Drung Hill.

Kayne’s Celebrate Milestone 18th Birthday
There was cause for celebration at Kayne’s Bar & Bistro recently as they reached their milestone 18th birthday. The Randles family were joined by staff and customers for a memorable party at the popular Dromhall Hotel pub, which has been the cornerstone of the Woodlawn area since the year 2000. Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser,
proprietor Bernadette Randles thanked her loyal employees and clientele, whom she described as the “lifeblood of the establishment”. She also revealed a titbit of information that some locals may not be aware of: the name Kayne’s came from a combination of both her parents’ names, Kay and Neil, who initially opened the doors of the Dromhall Hotel in 1964.

Pat & Niall Scale Three Peaks For Charity
Niall Dennehy (centre) and Pat Sheehan (right) celebrate with fellow climbers on the summit of Snowdon in Wales.
Climb Adventurous locals Pat Sheehan and Niall Dennehy recently put their fitness to the test by scaling the tallest mountains in Scotland, England and Wales – all in less than 24 hours. The pair started in Scotland where they climbed Ben Nevis (1345 metres) in 4hrs 34mins, 26 minutes inside the recommended time of five hours. They then hopped on a bus with 23 other climbers and travelled six hours south to the base of Scafell Pike (978 metres) in Cumbria. Pat and Niall completed England’s tallest mountain in 3hrs 32mins before hitting the road again. They arrived in Wales five hours later and scaled Snowdon (1085 metres) in 4hrs 33mins, 27 minutes inside the recommended time of five hours. In the end, they finished the challenge with five minutes to spare;
they set off at 8.35am on Saturday and finished at 8.30am on Sunday. Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser, Pat, of Pat Sheehan Health and Fitness, says coming from the Killarney area was a major bonus. “It was very tough but myself and Niall had a bit of an advantage,” he explained. “Not everyone who attempts the challenge has Carrantuohill on their doorstep and we did plenty of training up there in preparation. We enjoyed it. It’s good to push yourself like that and it’s all for a great cause.” So far, Pat and Niall have raised €1,800 for My Canine Companion, a charity which trains dogs to assist children and young adults living with autism. The pair are just €200 shy of their overall goal of €2,000. To make a contribution, visit gofundme.com/my-canine-companion.

Business Of The Week
Eat More To Weigh Less There’s no need for anyone looking to lose weight to go hungry. That’s the message from local slimming expert Sorcha Domican after new research found that filling up on low energy dense foods is more likely to lead to weight loss success than counting calories and cutting portion sizes. Sorcha, who has lost four-and-a-half stone and runs the Killarney Slimming World group in The Brehon and Plaza, says the key for anyone wanting to shed the pounds ahead of autumn is to eat more – not less. The Solutions for Weight through Psychology, Satiation and Satiety study, led by the University of Leeds and published in the Journal of Nutrition, compared women following Slimming World’s Food Optimising eating plan to another group of women following the NHS Choices programme, which is centred around calorie counting. Unlike a calorie-controlled diet, the Food Optimising plan encourages slimmers to fill up on low energy dense foods (foods that contain fewer calories per gram) including normal everyday foods like fruit and vegetables, lean meat, fish, pasta, rice and eggs to satisfy their appetite. All participants attended four laboratory test days at the University of Leeds’ Human Appetite Research Unit, eating low energy dense meals for two days and high-energy dense meals for the remaining tests to allow researchers to assess their impact on appe-
tite and calorie intake. Both groups found that eating lower energy dense foods left participants feeling less hungry and more full despite consuming fewer calories with larger amounts of foods. The research comes as no surprise to Sorcha, who supports over 300 people to lose weight each week in the Killarney Slimming World groups. “I tried so many fads when I decided I wanted to lose weight,” she says. “Skipping meals, food replacement shakes, even the ‘cabbage soup’ diet… You name it, I did it! I was just desperate to get quick results. Yes, I lost weight at first, but I put it all back on again because I felt too restricted and deprived. I felt so ashamed at ‘failing’ too. You can’t keep that up for long at all. “When I joined Slimming World everything changed. From the very first week I learned that actually, you can feel full and lose weight enjoying all your favourite dishes, just by making small changes to the way you shop, cook and eat. I eat more than I ever did before, I just eat smarter – filling up on lean meat, vegetables, fruit, potatoes, rice and fat-free dairy before anything else. I make healthy, homemade meals from scratch that the whole family can enjoy. My
family can’t get enough of spaghetti bolognese for example, and I can still enjoy a regular glass of wine or small bar of chocolate too. Member Cliona has lost over three-and-a-half stone since joining the group in November. “If I’m honest, I was a little sceptical before I joined Slimming World,” Clion said. “It sounded too good to be true. I always thought the only way to lose weight was to simply eat less or count everything that I ate and drank. I soon learned that wasn’t the case – I can enjoy meals like homemade fish and chips one night, curry another, roast dinners, ‘fakeaways’ – the list is endless! I’ve stopped counting, weighing and measuring everything and I’ve made small changes – like using lean meat, low-calorie cooking spray and adding plenty of fresh vegetables to fill my plate.” • If you’d like to lose weight without going hungry too, contact Sorcha at the Killarney Slimming World group on 086 8423317 or pop along to the group which is held every Tuesday in The Brehon at 9.30am, 11.30am, 5.30pm and 7.30pm, or Thursdays in The Plaza at 9.30am or 11.30am. A Weekly Round-Up Of News + Views From Kerry And Around
UN Envoy To Syria Warns Of Threat To Civilians
The UN envoy to Syria has warned of a “perfect storm” in north-west Syria if the government goes ahead with its threatened offensive against rebels. Staffan de Mistura called for humanitarian corridors to be set up to allow civilians to be evacuated temporarily. With rebels defeated in most of Syria, such an offensive could prove to be the last big battle of the civil war. Russia, the government’s main military ally, has also stepped up its rhetoric. Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said “terrorists” must be wiped out in Idlib, accusing them of using civilians as human shields. Both he and his Syrian counterpart, Walid Muallem, accused rebels of preparing to stage a chemical attack in Idlib in order to blame pro-government forces and draw new US military retaliation. Mr de Mistura said both the government and the rebels had the ability to make chlorine-based chemical weapons. Almost three million people live in Idlib where, according a UN estimate, there are around 10,000 al-Nusra and al-Qaeda jihadist fighters. The fighters must be de-
feated, Mr de Mistura said, but not at the expense of thousands of civilian lives. “There is a perfect storm based on warnings, counter-warnings which is gathering around and due to the dilemma, which is a true dilemma on how to defeat terrorists in Idlib and at the same time avoid affecting a huge number of civilians,” he said. “So, while we are aware that efforts and discussions are taking place to avoid the worst-case scenario, one cannot ignore that miscalculations may indeed occur leading to unforeseen escalation and we are all very much concerned.” The UN is desperate to avoid the deaths of civilians seen recently in other parts of Syria like Aleppo, Raqqa or the Eastern Ghouta, and its diplomats are pleading with those fighting to show restraint.
Trump Corner Trump Calls Legendary Reporter A “Degenerate Fool” US President Donald Trump is waging a war of words with legendary Watergate reporter Carl Bernstein over a story about his ex-lawyer Michael Cohen. On Wednesday, the president called Mr Bernstein a “sloppy” and “degenerate fool” who invented stories. Mr Bernstein fired back, tweeting that he spent his life “bringing the truth to light” and “no taunt” could diminish that commitment. His story reported Mr Trump knew about a 2016 meeting with Russians. On Twitter, the president said “CNN is being torn apart from within” over refusing to admit their mistakes, adding that
Never fails to entertain
Mr Bernstein “is being laughed at all over the country”. Mr Bernstein, a famed journalist who covered the Watergate scandal during the Nixon presidency, responded saying he stands by his reporting. The story in question had quoted sources as saying that Cohen, the president’s former personal lawyer, was ready to testify that Mr Trump was aware of the June 2016 Trump Tower meeting between his son, Donald Trump Jr and Russians who said they had dirt on Hillary Clinton. Cohen’s attorney, Lanny Davis, revealed on Monday that he was CNN’s source and has since recanted his statement. CNN has stood by the story and Mr Bernstein, tweeting at the president: “Make no mistake, Mr President, CNN does not lie.”
Complaints Upheld Over Nightclub’s ‘19th Hole’ Billboard
A billboard for a Donegal nightclub that prompted a string of complaints has been found to be in breach of advertising rules. The advert for Liberty nightclub featured a close up of a woman’s behind and she holds a golf club and wears a short skirt and a golf glove. The tagline for the advert reads: “Libertys, Your 19th Hole For the Summer.” Photographs of the advert were shared widely on social media when the billboard went up in May and the Advertising Standards Authority of Ireland has said that it received a total of 64 complaints about it. “The main issues raised were in relation to the advertisement being offensive, misogynistic and promoting a rape culture,” the ASAI said. Many complainants considered that the advertisement had an inappropriate focus on the image of the woman’s bottom and that the depiction of the woman reduced her to a sexual object and that she was objectified in the advertisement. “Many complainants also con-
sidered the implication was that men could access sex with young women at the nightclub and that it prompted sexually predatory behaviour.” In its response to the complaints, the Buncrana nightclub said that the term “19th hole” was a reference to the golf slang term for a pub or bar after a round of golf. Libertys said that the billboard was being used to promote the nightclub ahead of the Irish Open golf tournament, which was being held in nearby Ballyliffin at the end of June. The nightclub was asked by the ASAI why a woman was featured on the billboard. It responded by saying that there was “no conscious decision to use an image of a woman” and that “some images were considered” that featured a man and not a women. But in its determination, the ASAI found that part of the advertising code requires that advertisers should, “avoid causing offence on the grounds of gender or the exploitation or demeaning of women and should respect the principle of the equality of men and women”.
Luas Drivers In Packed Lunch Dispute Luas operator Transdev has provided more than 100 cooler bags to tram drivers in an attempt to resolve a row over packed lunches which the company says could cost it up to €250,000. Siptu, which representing Luas drivers, claims its members on the Green Line can no longer bring lunch in as the food spoils as a result of work changes linked to the opening of the Cross City Line. The Labour Court heard that drivers starting their day at the Sandyford depot are now required to take lunch-breaks at Broombridge in Cabra, which the union says means drivers have to carry their lunch with them in a warm cab for hours. In an attempt to resolve the dispute, Kevin Foley of the Labour
Court recommended that Transdev carry out a risk assessment to determine that cooler bags “are capable of transporting drivers’ packed lunches safely from one depot to another”. He noted that the court “would not normally concern itself with the functioning of cooler bags” but has done so in this case. Luas trams moving at ‘slow jogging pace’ through city centre What’s going on with the Luas? Commuters complain at overcrowding New longer Luas tram poses no additional difficulties crossing city, says operator Siptu says the change is resulting in an increased cost to drivers as they no longer have the option of bringing packed lunches to work.

French Actor Depardieu Belgian TV Presenter Accused Of Rape Charged Over Armed Robbery
French actor Gérard Depardieu has been accused of rape and sexual assault by a young actress, judicial sources say. He denies the allegations “absolutely”, his lawyer told AFP news agency. The allegations against the 69-year-old were formally made to police by a 22-year-old French actress on Monday, French radio reports. Mr Depardieu is one of France’s most recognisable actors, and has starred in films such as Cyrano de Bergerac and Jean de Florette. The alleged crimes occurred this month in one of Mr Depardieu’s Paris residences, French media report. The unnamed actress made her statement to police in Lambesc, southern France, after which the case was passed
to prosecutors in the capital. Mr Depardieu’s accuser is an actress and author who knew the actor before the alleged crimes took place. The actress was “devastated” by the alleged attacks, her agent was quoted as saying by French digital news service BFMTV. Mr Depardieu’s lawyer, Hervé Temime, said he was convinced his client would be exonerated of any blame by the end of the investigation. “I had a long meeting with Gérard Depardieu and I am absolutely convinced his innocence will be established,” he told France Info radio. The actor, he said, was “shaken” by the allegations, which went against “everything he is and respects”.
Rose Of Tralee Viewing Figures Down 50% In 8 Years Television viewing figures for the Rose of Tralee have halved over the past eight years, it has been revealed. Over one million people watched the 2010 show on RTÉ but the number this year was 564,000, a total drop of 48%. A survey has also found that half of Irish people hate watching
the Rose of Tralee competition on TV. A new study carried out by Empathy Research shows that 47 per cent of the 1,013 people surveyed like nothing about the annual Kerry festival. The most popular reason given by punters who do tune into the Tralee TV spectacle is the “cringe factor.”
One of Belgium’s top football TV presenters has been charged with being an accomplice to an armed robbery, prosecutors have said. Stéphane Pauwels, who has hosted shows for Belgian and French TV, was arrested as a part of a major police probe. The 2017 robbery, described by media as a “home invasion”, took place in the wealthy town of Lasne, near Brussels. The arrest is part of an investigation launched several months ago into armed robberies, burglaries and drug dealing. Five people are currently in custody as a result of it. Mr Pauwels, 50, was detained on Tuesday, and on Wednesday appeared before a judge who charged him and granted conditional bail. He is suspected of being an accomplice to “armed robbery with violence, firearms, at night, as part of a gang, using a vehicle”. The presenter is said to have complained about his partner’s former husband who was allegedly harassing them, according to Belgian media. He is said to have given the man’s name to a colleague who then allegedly arranged for the raid to take place at the man’s home, the reports say. The charge Mr Pauwels is facing does not
indicate his presence during the raid or that he carried out any violent acts, his lawyers were quoted as saying on Thursday afternoon. Mr Pauwels is a presenter on Belgium’s RTL-TVI channel - the country’s leading private broadcaster - and is also known in France for hosting football programmes on several stations. Parent company RTL Belgium has suspended Mr Pauwels with immediate effect.
Cop Gets 15 Years For Shooting Unarmed Black Teen An ex-police officer has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for shooting dead an unarmed black teenager in Texas. Roy Oliver, who is white, fired a rifle into a car that was driving away from a party in Dallas in April 2017, killing 15-year-old Jordan Edwards. It is very rare for police officers to be convicted in shooting deaths. Oliver’s lawyers say they intend to appeal against the verdict. Jordan’s family say the jail sentence is too lenient. “He can actually see life again after 15 years and that’s not enough because Jordan can’t see life again,” his stepmother, Charmaine Edwards, said. On the night of April 29, 2017, police responded to reports of underage drinking at a house party in the suburb Balch Springs. Officers were inside the home trying to find the owner when they heard outside what they believed to be gunshots, causing panic at the home as people fled. According to police documents, Oliver’s partner, Tyler Gross, attempted to stop a car full of teenagers leaving the party. He walked up to the passenger door of the car and
punched the window, breaking it. Oliver then fired several times into the car shooting Jordan, who was in the front passenger seat, in the back of the head. Oliver said he believed the car was reversing “aggressively” towards his partner. However, bodycam footage showed that the car was actually driving away from police when the shots were fired.

The Killarney Races are now worth nearly €8 million to the local economy and the company that organises the three yearly festivals insists that the estimate is on the conservative side. Hotels, guesthouses, restaurants, bars, shops and transport service providers all report a boom during the races in May, July and August, in addition to fashion houses and hair and beauty professionals who enjoy a huge spin-off from the Queen of Fashion event in July and Ladies Day in August. An extra day of racing was added in July – bringing the total number to 12 in the year – and a whopping €1.5 million in prizemoney was on offer for the 2018 season. “The hope is to increase this next year, along with adding new dates to our already busy calendar,” said Killarney Race Company Chairman, Gerard Coughlan. He said attendances for the three festi-

vals was hugely encouraging and he thanked all patrons and sponsors who supported the races. “We went out on a real high with a 15 per cent increase in attendance last Saturday, the closing day of the August Festival, bringing a very successful year on the track to a wonderful climax. Despite the drought, the course was in pristine condition for all three festivals and we would like to compliment course supervisor, Padraig Bruton, and his team for their great work,” Mr Coughlan stated. On the racing front, there were a number of notable performers with a potential superstar winning his maiden in Killarney in July. Anthony Van Duck won by eight lengths and he has followed up since with wins in a Group 3 and, most recently, a Group 2 at the Curragh. Anthony Van Dyck is also the current ante-post favourite for the 2019 Epsom Derby.
Another impressive winner in Killarney in July was Wicklow Brave who went on to win in Galway before returning to the August festival to win again. The Rose of Tralee, Kirsten Mate Maher from Waterford, made her first public appearance at the Killarney Races last Wednesday and she was spotted snapping a selfie with the Killarney Advertiser’s Kieran Healy. Kieran was on hand to present the prizes for the Killarney Advertiser Handicap which was won by 7/1 second favourite High Altitude. Inset: Best Dressed Man Michael McCarrell. Welcome
W
elcome to the August edition of Home and Living. We had such amazing weather this summer. I always find my house gets a bit neglected during the summer months as the garden takes over. And while I do love the summer, I love the long winter nights. As the temperatures drop, the evenings get shorter and we spend more time indoors. It’s a great opportunity to reassess our living space for the winter months. I love the coziness of winter; extra cushions some throws, a good book and, of course, a nice fire. Great for recharging our batteries. This month in Home and Living we’re looking at master bedrooms and en suites, and if you’re on the search for a new bed have a look at our notebook. Also our featured living room newly designed by Kadri Bormeister is amazing, featuring fabulous flooring from Corcoran’s Furniture and Carpets.

Bedroom Accessories If you haven’t got time or budget doesn’t allow a complete overhaul for your bedroom, it’s amazing what new accessories like cushions a throw or a mirror can do to lift a room. Everyone needs a full-length mirror to prevent those fashion faux pas but make it a decorative one that goes with your room. It becomes a part of your décor. Put it across from a window if possible to make the most of the light - this is particularly effective in a small room. Another good trick with mirrors to brighten your room is to place two mirrors over your bedside tables behind your lamps. If you have a neutral themed bedroom, a great way to add on trend colour is cushions or throws and these can be changed quite inexpensively. Adding a corner chair if you have the space will not only add colour but also gives you a space to chill - as long as you keep it clothesfree! We’ve picked a few of our favourite pieces.

Interior of the Month
The idea was to create a space to relax in the evening. The dark furniture, leather and original art work all combine with the rich blue grey colour scheme which makes the space appear intimate.
The combination of various materials has resulted in a comfortable look. The two couches are different in order to give a timeless feel. The family are avid art collectors and the dark background is ideal for displaying paintings. The rugs bring in a sense of warmth.
The design scheme was not formed overnight, even though it looks just perfect, and links in well with the rest of the building. It is very often the case that understanding comes with time, the ideas have to be digested in order to figure out what it is that we like. Questions must be asked, such as, “are we willing to try out new design directions?” Often what felt scary at the start of the building feels just right at the end of it.

Bedroom 2018
TRENDS Glam mid centuary
Did you know that we spend around a third of our lives in bed? So what better excuse do we need for a beautiful bedroom. Our master bedroom is often a forgotten room as we tend to spend all our decorating budget on the more social areas in our home, the most viewed by other people, but it’s important to create a space just for you. The bedroom is often the most personal space in your home which gives you a chance to go really wild or not, as your taste dictates. But where to start? With the internet and sites like Pinterest and Houzz, the possibilities are endless whether you’re a fan of hotel chic, Nordic style, midcentury, or the huge boho style trending on Instagram. It’s hard not to get a little confused by all this choice. I’ve mentioned this before but it’s worth saying again: before you go shopping, go buy some interior magazines or set up a board on Pinterest and pick out all the rooms you love. You’ll find a lot of the images are similar, you’ve found your style. So when you go shopping for your room you have a starting point. Another tip is to pick one thing you love and build your room around it. The bed is the simplest place to start as it’s the largest piece of furniture. It’s important to budget for a good mattress, but think about the style you want to create when buying your headboard or bed as this will dominate your scheme. If you’re looking for inspiration we’ve picked a few of our favourite bedrooms in different styles to help you choose yours.

Sweet Ensuites If you’re lucky enough to have a large en suite then the sky’s the limit when decorating. But if space is tight, here are some top tips to make your room feel more spacious.
Choose wall-mounted rather than floor-standing furniture Not only will this make your en suite look larger (because the eye can roam freely round the bottom half of the room), it will physically be larger too since wall-mounted bathroom furniture is smaller than floor-standing furniture – in fact most wall mounted bathroom furniture suites have been created specifically with en suites and small bathrooms in mind.

Make the accessories wall mounted Generally, anything you put on the floor can find a space off the floor - you can even have the toilet brush attached to the wall. Don’t bother with a bulky towel rai, simply install a hook on the back of the door instead. What you are attempting to achieve here is to keep the floor as free as possible to give the room an uncluttered appearance and the impression of being larger than it actually is.
Make the most of a mirror Mirrors magnify the size of any room, provided it’s not reflecting a lot of clutter! Opposite the sink, or above it is an excellent place to put a large picture mirror. You don’t have to stick to a bathroom mirror. Think of getting a large piece of mirror cut to fit the entire wall above the sink or a decorative mirror opposite.
Consider portable storage If an en suite is really small and therefore lacking in suitable storage space, then a small trolly with portable baskets (i.e. for face towels, cosmetics and toiletries etc.) could be just the ticket. When not in use, store it in a nearby walk-in closet.
Conceal ugly pipework
Corcorans Furniture & Carpets
Unsightly pipes can make a small en suite bathroom feel cluttered. Conceal them beneath the sink in a box or by installing a back to wall toilet so that they’re actually built behind a panel.
Build a wetroom If you’re not a big bath fan or it simply won’t fit, or if you prefer a large shower, then it might be an idea to consider a wetroom instead. This way you’ll make the most of the space you have. For the sake of leaking water this will definitely require the advice and help of a professional fitter.

Tips For Students Viewing Leaving Cert Scripts Students who have submitted an application to view their Leaving Cert exam scripts will be attending their school to look at their scripts at a session allocated to them by the school on either today (Friday, August 31) or tomorrow (Saturday, September 1). Most students do so because they are disappointed with the result they received in a particular subject and are considering whether or not to appeal it by sending it to be rechecked. There is no fee for viewing the script but there is a fee of €40 for each Leaving Cert exam appealed and €15.50 for each LCA exam. The fee is refunded if students are upgraded. The student must attend the exam script viewing and can be accompanied by one other person of their choice. Pens and pencils are not allowed but mobile phones, tablets and digital cameras are. To get maximum use out of the viewing session it is important to be well prepared by being very familiar with the exam paper and the marking schemes which are available in the viewing centre. Because time is limited in the session, it is best to have at least looked at the structure of marking schemes in previous years. Make sure to bring a calculator and if you are viewing a few papers, you need to prioritise. Begin with the subject that you were most disappointed with. Start by tot-

ting up the marks to make sure there wasn’t a mathematical mistake. Take note of how many marks or what percentage you are away from the next grade. You will only get a points increase if your marks go up past the next grade band. To make an appeal, Form AP1 must be completed and submitted. To help with this take a photo of the section you wish to query. Leave a sheet of paper and a pen outside the viewing centre along with the AP1 form. If you find an error, leave the centre and on the sheet of paper write down the number of the question(s) and the answer(s) you which to query. Make note of the reason why you are appealing the marks. When you have returned your exam paper to the superintendent write the notes you have made onto the AP1 form. It is important to remember that students can be downgraded as well as upgraded so students need to consider carefully an appeal before submitting it to the State Exams Commission. Results of the appeals are issued in early October. • Niamh Dwyer is a guidance counsellor in Scoil Phobail Sliabh Luachra, Rathmore and is PRO of the Kerry Branch of Guidance Counsellors. Electric Classic Jaguar E-Type To Go Into Production

SAVE s3,000 s14,900 Finance this from €49pw NOW
Last year we covered a concept launch of an unusual contender in the electric vehicle market, the iconic Jaguar E-type. The latest is that the sports car is set to make a comeback with the concept approved to go into production. The E-type Zero, notably driven by Prince Harry as he whisked Meghan Markle away to their wedding reception earlier this year, will be available to buy from summer 2020. Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) announced that Jaguar Classic - a unit which restores vintage models - will convert E-types to electric power at its Classic Works facility in Coventry. Details on how much the revamped car could cost remains tightly under wraps for
now. However, Jaguar has said those who already have an E-type will be offered the reversible option of converting their vehicles to electric power. JLR Classic director Tim Hannig said: “We’ve been overwhelmed by the positive reaction to the Jaguar E-type Zero concept. Future-proofing the enjoyment of classic car ownership is a major stepping stone for Jaguar Classic. E-type Zero showcases the incredible heritage of the E-type, and the expertise and craftsmanship at Classic Works, while demonstrating Jaguar Land Rover’s dedication to creating zero emission vehicles across every part of the business, including Jaguar Classic.”
Opel Debuts Pure-Electric Gt X Experiment Suv
Opel has unveiled a new concept that will showcase its styling direction for all future models. Called the GT X Experiment, the pure-electric SUV is also the first concept conceived by the German carmaker since it was acquired by French brand Groupe PSA last year. Looking more crossover coupe than traditional SUV, the GT X features the brand’s new face, incorporating what the carmaker is calling the “Opel Compass” – two horizontal and vertical axes that intersect at the illuminated version of the familiar lightning bolt logo. In traditional concept style, the GT X also features rear-hinged ‘suicide’ doors and a pillar-less design that allows easier access to the cabin. Opel’s interior is typically minimalistic in its design, with a huge digital instrument panel that sweeps its way
dramatically across the car. Opel hasn’t officially released the tech spec for the GT X Experiment, but it’s rumoured to come powered by a 50kWh battery that can be charged by induction pads. As well as featuring what’s thought to be the brand’s next-generation pure-electric powertrain, the GT X is also said to feature semi-autonomous driving aids that will include hands-off cruising. It’s not been confirmed yet, but a production version of an SUV loosely based on the new concept is highly probable, following Opel’s declaration that it expects 40 per cent of sales to come from crossovers by 2021. The first car to be inspired by the GT X Experiment’s bold new looks will be the all-new Astra replacement that’s set to arrive in 2020.

Volkswagen Bets On Car-Share Scheme And Tech Expansion Volkswagen has announced it is investing €3.5 billion to fast-forward the development of the digital side of its business by expanding its cloudbased apps and connected-car technology. As part of its billion-dollar cash injection, the German car-maker will launch its ‘We Share’ car-sharing scheme that’s been designed to rival BMW’s DriveNow and Daimler’s Car2Go. Under the ‘We’ banner, in the future VW customers will be able to access both conventional cars and
pure-electric vehicles. As part of the service, you will be able to use your app to electronically pay for parking, use your car to receive in-car packages and track fuel prices. In future, Volkswagen owners will also use their app to rent out their own vehicles by passing digital keys to other users. As part of the plan, the car-maker is creating a new software operating system called VW OS that will be first introduced on its pure-electric car range in 2020.
Instead of around 70 different sensors that are controlled and work independently, the new system will connect all the modules via the single proprietary software. This would help information gathered to be more efficiently processed and allow some sensors to double up their functions. A parking sensor, for example, could communicate with the steering, brakes and high-definition maps to allow the car to park itself with far greater accuracy than current systems.

Is Ed A Married Man?? News Flash
In a recent interview Ed Sheeran appears to comfirm his married!
Ed Sheeran has more or less confirmed that he’s already married his long-term love Cherry Seaborn in a secret ceremony. In an on-camera interview with Access, the 27-year-old was asked: “What about the wedding details? have you picked a date? Do you know where? Do you know when yet?” Ed hesitated, before smiling sheepishly and pointing at a silver ring on his finger. Taking Sheeran’s response as confirmation that he’s already gotten hitched, the interviewer said, “Ah right!” before adding, “That’s exciting! Congratulations my friend! Congratulations! How did you sneak that one?” Then Ed replied: “Well I never do anything too public anyway.” Ed announced his engagement to Cherry back in January. The couple started dating in mid 2015, but had previously been schoolmates at Thomas Mills High School in Framlingham.

Caroline Flack & Andrew Brady Jet To The Caribbean For Make Or Break Holiday Caroline Flack and Andrew Brady have jetted to Saint Lucia in a last ditch attempt to save their relationship. The couple, who got engaged back in April after just three months of dating, have already split twice since they their romance first blossomed. Despite their rocky relationship, it appears the couple are determined to make it work as they’ve jetted 4,000 miles away for another make or break holiday. A source told The Sun, “Caroline has had a really tough time but she really wants things with Andrew to carry on.” “She loves him and knows he has strong feelings for her, too. They both felt if they could get far away, they could properly work things out. “They are laying low and deciding whether their relationship can be salvaged,” they added. The Love Island host has also disabled comments on her Instagram account, to avoid any negativity during their trip to the Caribbean. Caroline and Andrew called off their engagement last month, however, it wasn’t long before the pair reunited thanks to a romantic trip to Ibiza. But then just weeks later, Caroline and Andrew got into a massive row over dinner at an East London restaurant, proving that their relationship is still on the rocks.
Prince Harry & Meghan Markle
Have A New Addition Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have apparently already made an important addition to their family. Following the news that only one of Meghan’s dogs was able to make the journey from Toronto to London, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have apparently adopted a new Labrador rescue dog. The Daily Mail is reporting, via a royal source, that Meghan and Harry’s new dog “is already happily ensconced at their cottage,” meaning that their family has expanded since their May 2018 wedding. The source also reveals that “the dog will divide its time between the palace and their country home in the Cotswolds,” meaning that it will often travel with the royals to engagements. While details of Meghan and Harry’s Labrador are yet to be released by Kensington Palace, it’s clear that the former Suits star shares her love of animals with her new husband.

Garden Magic The Time Is Now For Semi-Ripe Cuttings I always find the transition between summer and autumn a difficult one in the garden. Summer bedding looks shabby but, to give it credit, it hangs on and tries to look good… Borders and herbaceous plants are falling over, but still in flower… My hands itch to reach for the secateurs, or bring bedding to the compost heap, but what is there to replace these plants? Nothing yet! So I hold off and content myself by making cuttings. This is the ideal time of year for semi-ripe cuttings. These are taken from this year’s growth and are hard at the bottom, or woody, but still soft at the top. Why take cuttings? Well, it is a very cost effective way of obtaining plants, especially if you need a lot, for, say, a hedge. You are also ensured an exact replica of the plant you take the cutting from, as opposed to seeds you might save. Which is great if you have favourites! It is easy to take cuttings; you need very little. Just a plant, a sterile sharp knife or secateurs, and ideally rooting powder. Rooting powder contains hormones which stimulate the formulation of roots, as well as an antifungal component, preventing your cuttings from rotting. It comes as both a powder and a gel. Both are equally effective. Never use too much and always shake off
the excess. Always use material from a healthy disease-free plant. Take cuttings in the morning when the plant is not under stress from sun. Place the pieces you cut into a plastic bag to prevent wilting. There are three basic types of cutting: the basic method is cutting a piece just below a leaf, about 15cm long. Then there are heel cuttings, which is where you pull a side shoot away from the stem leaving a ‘heel’ which you then trim. And thirdly, basal cuttings, which are generally suitable for herbaceous plants. These are taken very near the base of the plant where there is a slight swelling. They have a high percentage success rate as there are many hormones here. From
wherever you take the cutting, trim the top and bottom, and remove the lower leaves. If leaves are large you can cut them in half. Dip them into powder and stick into a prepared tray. Use cutting compost mixed with an equal amount of sand or perlite. Water well. Place your cuttings in a greenhouse, or under a clear plastic cover such as a polythene bag, to prevent drying out. Now the most difficult part: do not be tempted to pull them out to check if there are roots! Do check them regularly for disease or rotting leaves, and keep them clean and moist. Plants suitable for semi-ripe cuttings are: buxus, berberis, choisya, hebe, fatsia, privet, portugese laurel, bay tree, rosemary, lavender, conifers, solanum and passio flowers. Also euonymus, ceanothus and almost all herbaceous plants. All herbs and most evergreen plants are also suitable. Debby is available for garden consultations and advice, just ring 086 6088156 or email barnhillgarden@gmail.com Garden classes with Debby will resume in the Community College. Contact the school for details. The classes are suitable for beginners and enthusiasts alike, and cover all aspects of gardening, from vegetable to ornamental, with a focus on environmentally friendly alternatives where possible.

Legion & Crokes Clear The First Hurdle Words: Adam Moynihan
Championship season got off to a winning start for the Killarney clubs last weekend as the Legion and the Crokes both overcame stern tests to advance unscathed to the winners’ round. I’m only back in the Legion squad myself but I know Rathmore had a bit of a run going against us so it was nice to beat them out in Rathbeg. The first half was even enough and a cracking goal by James O’Donoghue was all that separated the sides at the break. The hosts started the second half at an unmerciful pace, however, and when Shane Ryan netted four minutes after the restart, they led by two. The game swung back in our favour shortly after when Pádraig Lucey was in the right place at the

right time to gather a rebound and tap home from close range. Our backs managed to get a handle on Rathmore’s skilful forwards thereafter and Jamie O’Sullivan kept the scoreboard ticking over at the other end with a string of frees. We led by five, 2-13 to 1-11, with just three minutes to go and appeared to be in control of the situation but there was still time for another dramatic twist. John Moynihan
did well to evade two defenders on the end line before teeing up Eoin Lawlor and the diminutive forward applied the finish to make it a two-point game with the clock winding down. Shane Ryan kicked another point to cut the deficit to one but luckily the boys managed to weather the storm and James O’Donoghue had the final say when he fisted a score from a narrow angle. I thought it was a good team per-

formance by the lads and in the end we were good value for our 2-14 to 2-12 win. Dr Crokes also booked their place in Round 2A with a surprisingly narrow victory over St Kieran’s in Lewis Road. I predicted a comfortable 11-point victory for the Crokes last week but I was a bit off; Kieran’s actually led by a point with just five minutes to play and it took a grandstand finish to spare the home team’s blushes. Four straight points by Daithí Casey, Paul Clarke, Jordan Kiely and Johnny Buckley sealed the victory for the reigning
champions, who are currently having to make do without key players like Gavin White and Tony Brosnan. Elsewhere, Mid Kerry hammered An Ghaeltacht, South Kerry beat Kenmare and St Brendan’s got the better of West Kerry in Austin Stack Park. The latter result means that East Kerry will face Brendan’s in the first round this coming Saturday. East Kerry will be favourites to advance but with some exciting young talent on show on both sides, it should make for interesting viewing. Throw-in at Fitzgerald Stadium is at 5.30pm.

Busy times for Deerpark Pitch & Putt Club who will follow up hosting the 2018 National Inter-County Pitch & Putt Championships with the staging of their annual Ricky Kelly Memorial Tournament a week later. This year’s competition will take place in aid of the Ian O’Connell Trust in conjunction with Spa GAA Club. Ian’s story has touched the club as much as it has many others both near and far and the club is delighted to give the proceeds of this year’s event to Ian to aid him with the living of his life into the future. Inaugurated in 1991, the event has been held
in Ricky’s memory since 1992 and this will be the 27th staging of the popular competition. The event will take place on the weekend of September 15/16 and the club is throwing it open this year to both members and non-members of the PPUI in an effort to raise as many funds as possible for the Trust. The event is kindly sponsored once more by the Tatler Jack Bar and the cost of entry is €90 per adult team with an U-16 section for the first time with a fee of €30 per team. Play is scheduled to begin on Friday afternoon September 14 with players this year allowed to play on
The Treaty of Limerick 2018 The Treaty of Limerick was an important event in the ancient history of Ireland and it was revisited recently in Croke Park by the Limerick hurlers. It was updated, signed, sealed and delivered when the Shannonsiders just held out against Galway to capture the Liam McCarthy Cup. They beat Galway 3-16 to 2-18 in Croke Park, which was full to its capacity of 82,000 spectators. I wouldn’t regard this as a classic encounter and I have seen better games but for sheer excitement it was wonderful to watch the eight minutes in time added-on by the referee. Galway were chasing this game throughout. They were four points in arrears at half time, 0-9 to 1-10, and worse was to follow as Limerick turned the screw. Limerick substitute Shane Dowling scored his side’s third goal in the 67th minute for an eight-point lead. Surely this decided the outcome of the match but Galway refused to capitulate. Conor Whelan burrowed his way through a packed Limerick goal to raise a green flag in the 71st minute and that cut the Limerick lead to five points. In the 74th minute their goalkeeper Nickie Quaid handled the ball on the ground and up stepped Joe Canning,
their best player, to crash the sliotar past a packed Limerick goal-line. Niall Burke cut the lead to a point. Graeme Mulcahy landed a great point. Then Joe Canning had two long distance frees. He scored one but the second one dropped short. Time was up and the Liam McCarthy Cup was bound for Limerick for the first time since 1973 and for the eighth time in the history of the All-Ireland hurling championship. The role of honour puts Kilkenny ahead on 36 titles followed by Cork on 30 and Tipperary on 27. Galway remain stuck on five. While Galway had to come with a late scoring burst on Sunday last Limerick only scored on three occasions in the final 30 minutes. They still deserved to win and they would have been kicking themselves if they lost this one when one considers that they led by nine points at one stage. Limerick were far superior to Galway who were so dependent on the brilliant Joe Canning, scorer of 1-10. Galway were flat throughout and did not come alive until that late blitz. They had gambled on playing injured players and this backfired. This was most noticeable in Gearóid McInerney who was a key man on their route to Croke Park. Limerick had several stars. I was very
multiple teams if they so wish. Prizes will also be awarded for the best local sports club team (non PPUI members) as well as a number of other different categories as the club extends a big invite to former and current members, keen golfers, sharks, scrubbers and complete beginners to support this year’s event. The presentation of prizes will take place on Sunday evening at the club with an evening barbeque and entertainment. For further information on this year’s event and to pre-book tee-times, contact the club on 087 9488516 in advance.

impressed by Mike Casey who was brilliant until he had to go off injured in the 50th minute. Team captain Declan Hannon had a great game even though he was picking up Joe Canning. Kyle Hayes, the youngest man on the field, was the star Limerick forward and he rowed in with four valuable points. Tom Morrissey also impressed. The round robin series for this year’s hurling championship proved an unqualified success and there was only a puck of the sliotar between the top teams Limerick, Galway, Kilkenny, Clare, Waterford, Wexford and Dublin. It took replays to separate some of
those teams. The experimental Super 8s, meanwhile, were not nearly as successful in the football series. One of the features of last Sunday’s game was the number of wides by both teams. Limerick scored 1-10 in the first half but they also shot 11 wides and added nine more in the second half. Galway were not much better. They shot 16 wides. Limerick got most of their scores from general play. They converted just two placed balls while Galway had to depend on Joe Canning. He scored 1-10 (1-5 frees, 0-2 65s). Both goalkeepers did well and were very accurate with their puck-outs.

Vettel Drives To Victory At Crash-Marred Belgian GP Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel bolted past pole-sitter Lewis Hamilton and led the race to the checkered flag to win the 2018 Belgian Grand Prix last Sunday. The race victory marked Ferrari’s first win at Spa in a decade and means the German has now reduced Hamilton’s lead by 17 points. Hamilton currently sits on 231 and Vettel on 214. This result is Vettel’s third win at Spa, his fifth of the season and the 52nd race win of his career. Hamilton finished P2 while Max Verstappen had a bit of a boring drive to his spot on the podium in P3. At the front, championship leader Lewis Hamilton started from his record fifth Belgian pole in his Mercedes but was passed by championship rival Vettel of Ferrari who drafted past him on the Kemmel Straight to take the lead before the Safety Car was deployed. The Belgian Grand Prix was red-flagged to a halt after a spectacular first lap crash that saw Fernando Alonso and two others unable to continue. The Safety Car was deployed immediately after Nico Hulkenberg of Renault drove into the rear of Alonso’s McLaren which sent the McLaren driver spiralling into the air, narrowly clearing the cockpit of Charles Leclerc’s Sauber car. This crash triggered a multiple collision that saw damage to other cars including Daniel Ricciardo’s Red Bull, who hit the rear of Kimi Raikkonen’s Ferrari.
Rugby News ... Words: Liam Murphy
Munster’s pre-season finished last Friday night at Musgrave Park with an ominous drubbing against fellow Heineken Cup pool side Exeter Chiefs. Exeter wanted to set out their stall and lay a marker for the pool stages of the European Cup and they brought over 13 members of the squad that was beaten in the Premiership final. They certainly didn’t come to merely make up the numbers; they came to win. Exeter scored two tries in the first half, leading 12 points to nil at halftime. Munster improved in the second half but neither side scored and the scoreline remained 0-12 in favour of the visitors. Munster will face this team twice over the pool stages of the European Cup and now know the mountain they face if they are to make it through to the knockout stages. Kerryman and Castleisland native JJ Hanrahan shone for the home side, as Joey Carbery enjoyed some downtime in Rome.

Killarney Youngsters Make Their Mark With Munster
The Killarney RFC U-14’s who took part in an open training session last Saturday at Aghadoe.
Speaking of our neighbours Castleisland, it was good to see Castleisland RFC and Munster Academy player Jack Daly involved in the match. Daly came on for Tommy O’Donnell who suffered a suspected concussion and played in the second half of the win the weekend before against London Irish. Congrats to Jack and all at Castleisland RFC. The future
looks very bright for him. Regarding local players and the Munster set-up, Killarney RFC’s own Richard Wallace played three matches with the Munster U-18 club side in the recent Interprovincial Festival, beating Ulster but losing to Leinster and Connacht. Richard played some fantastic rugby and is a guy to watch for the future.
Also at U-16 level, Killarney RFC’s Odeniz Koyun and John McCarthy represented Munster U-16s against Leinster last weekend at Thomond Park, with Odeniz scoring a try! It’s fantastic to see Killarney RFC players making it through to these sides and development squads. Best of luck to the lads for the future.

31 Clubs In Killarney Advertiser This Week
beaufortgaaclub.com FIXTURES: Junior men will play in round 2, McElligott Cup on Friday, 31st August. Fixture draw to be made. Dr Crokes Club Senior County Championship - Round 1: Dr Crokes 1-18 St Kierans 2-13. Played in Lewis Road on Saturday 25th of August. In a game in which we struggled for supremacy for forty five minutes we ran out winners in the end by two points. Credit also goes to St Kierans who had a defensive structure we found hard to break down and who also sent over some very good long distance points from play and from placed balls. They also breached our defence for two goals. We won this game through having two great periods of play in the last fifteen minutes. We were four points down at the end of the third quarter but sent over four points without reply from the 47th to 52nd minute to gain equality. Even though our opponents went a point in front again a minute later we took over again and had four unanswered points between the 56th and 64th minute to go three points clear going into the last minute of added time. St Kierans had a point on the stroke of full time to leave us winners by two points at the end of play. One would have to single out two of our leaders Colm Cooper and Johnny Buckley who stood up as leaders do in our last quarter of supremacy. Credit too to the the rest of the team and the off the bench players who also upped their game during this revival. Our goalkeeper Shane Murphy was also very strong and decisive under the high ball as he needed to be as we had lost our full back Mike Moloney through injury before half time. We had plenty of play in the first quarter and led six points to three after fifteen minutes. Our opponents had a point at the start of the second quarter and then went into lead for the first time with a goal in the 19th minute. In the last ten minutes of this half they outscored us three points to two to go in at the interval leading by 1-7 to 0-8. St Kierans had two points in the first few minutes of the second half and it was very much game on. A point by Colm Cooper and a good goal by David Shaw put the teams level after 37 minutes. A goal, followed b a point put our opponents four points clear as we entered the last fifteen minutes, including injury time. We were now in a position we haven’t been for a few years but we rose to the task in hand and outscored our opponents eight points to two in the remaining period of play. There were positives and negatives in our display. We played on the back foot for a lot of the game and credit St Kierans for that. Our players deserve credit for their grand stand finish to achieve victory. We had nine scores on the day. All forwards scored and our bench accounted for 1-2. Our Management also deserve credit for freshening up the team when it was needed. We wish Mike Moloney a speedy recovery. Best of luck to our Kerry Minors playing this weekend especially Cokes contingent Mark Cooper and Michael Lenihan.

Legion GAA
COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND 1: Rathmore 2-12 – Killarney Legion 2-14. This first round championship encounter between Killarney Legion and Rathmore lived up to expectations with little to separate them right up to the final whistle. Rathmore, playing against the wind, went into an early lead 0-04 to 0-01 after just seven minutes making full use of home advantage. That all changed on the twentieth minutes with James O’ Donoghue’s clinical finish to the roof of the Rathmore net and some fine points contributed from play from the on form Conor Keane finished the first half with Legion deservingly going in at half time 1-08 to 0-08. The second half saw Rathmore reducing the deficit with a goal early in the half only to see Legion respond with their second goal with Padraig Lucey finishing to the net. Legion stretched their lead to five points with twenty-four minutes on the clock and looked comfortable to see the game out. Rathmore, to their credit, responded with their second goal on the twenty-six minute mark to leave only two points between the teams, but Legion held with some great defending led by Danny Sheehan and Damian Sullivan and Brian Kelly in goal. Legion finished strongly and deservedly ran out winners.
