New councillors elected in Killarney Some topped the polls while others struggled – but the councillors for the Killarney Municipal District have been elected. | By Anne Lucey
EXCLUSIVE
There’ll be two newish faces when business resumes in June – and five of the seven elected councillors are Independent. Maura Healy-Rae (Independent) topped the polls with 3,099 first preference votes, while Michael Gleeson (Kerry Independent Alliance) got 1,983. Both were elected on the first count. Independent Brendan Cronin received 1,505 first preference votes and was elected on the second count, while
Fianna Fail’s Niall Kelleher received 1,243 first preference votes and was also elected on the second count. Independent candidate Donal Grady got 1,324 first preference votes and was elected on the third count, while Niall Botty O’Callaghan, who ran as an Independent with a social media and a poster free campaign, got 1,065 first preference votes and was elected on the sixth count. Meanwhile Labour’s Marie Moloney snatched the last seat in a battle with Fine Gael’s John Sheahan. Of those elected Moloney received the lowest first preference votes with 871,
but behind her were Sheahan, Buckley at just 485, and Neily O'Connor Fianna Fail, at 266. It was a tough day for Fine Gael as Mayor of Killarney, John Sheahan, lost his seat on the seventh count - receiving just 827 first preference votes. Fianna Fail are down a councillor and votes with the redrawing of the boundary but also with the exit of John Joe Culloty, while a personal improvement for Kelleher was not impressive. And Fine Gael have none at all. The outgoing Mayor’s loss is a severe blow for Fine Gael in Killarney and questions will be asked now about Fine Gael going into the General Election. Former Mayor Niall Botty O’Callaghan has succeeded, despite not knocking
Killarney Celtic shortlisted as top FAI soccer club in country
| By Sean Moriarty Local soccer club Killarney Celtic has been shortlisted as one of the top soccer clubs in the country – it was revealed by the FAI yesterday (Thursday). The club are up against five others with each group selected getting a guaranteed €2,000 for their club, with the winners collecting an additional €5,000. “We are delighted, but this is on the back of a huge effort from the volunteers to
club officers and management,” Ramona Keogh, the club’s marketing and PR officer told the Killarney Advertiser. “The initial part of the application was a huge undertaking. When we do things right at Killarney Celtic we do it very right. The news comes after a very successful Barnardo’s Tournament where we had all the top teams in Kerry and beyond.” Club official’s next step is the preparation of a presentation that will be made in front of FAI officials before the 2019 FAI Club of the Year announcement in
Meath, during the FAI's Festival of Football in July. Killarney Celtic was founded in 1976 by two Killarney locals, Mike Daly, and Billy Healy who is now living in Seattle, USA. Five counties are represented on the shortlist, with Galway providing two of the finalists in Colemanstown United and Salthill Devon. Cork's Midleton FC have the chance to become the first club to win the FAI Club of the Year on two occasions, having previously been crowned winners in 2012.
on a single door, or putting up a single poster and going on holidays during the final week of canvassing - while Maura Healy-Rae ran a loud and vigorous canvass. The focus will shift now to the current Mayorship and just who will get it. Will it be poll topper Maura Healy-Rae?
Gardai appeal for witnesses as vehicles damaged Killarney Gardai are appealing for information after several vehicles were damaged during the daytime in the Muckross Road car park. A number of cars and an open top double decker hop on/hop off tour bus were damaged during the incidents which took place at around 3pm last Saturday. Two vehicles were parked in the area that lies between Sheahan’s Centra and Killarney Brewery on the Muckross Road. It is understood that the vehicles damaged were parked towards the rear of the car park and that the double-decker was being stored there long-term ahead of the full summer season. “We are appealing for information, we believe there were young people involved,” Superintendent Flor Murphy told the Killarney Advertiser.

Wall painting immortalises Killarney natives
| By Sean Moriarty Brand new bright colourful murals have suddenly appeared in town immortalising some of Killarney’s most-famous sons and daughters. The giant mural was painted on the exterior walls of Dan Lenihan’s Bar on College Street, depicting Hollywood actors Michael Fassbender, and Jessie Buckley, Kerry footballer James O'Donoghue, Cheltenham Gold Cup winning jockey and trainer Jim Culloty and the late Dan Linehan, founder of the eponymous pub.
James O'Donoghue is a grandson of Dan Linehan. The opposite gable features a colourful impression of Killarney with a deer and mountains. The mural was commissioned by Dan’s granddaughter Siobhan Linehan who now runs the pub. “I have an interest in street art - the colour, vibrancy, creativity,” Siobhan said. “Two years ago I started trawling Instagram for Irish artists whose work I admired in the hope we could collaborate to brighten up Linehan’s Lane. Padraig Treacy popped into the pub last year be-
fore the Tidy Town judges came around marking and suggested we paint our laneway to tidy it up. I imagined that something bigger and bolder than a lick of paint would probably go down well and be welcomed from a Killarney Looking Good perspective.” Siobhan commissioned Dublin-based Cork artist, Garreth Joyce, better known for his street murals in the capital, who in turn recruited portrait specialist Rachelle O'Donohoe to turn her vision into a reality. “When he agreed to take on the project
I had a vague idea of one walls being an identity parade of notable Irish hero's and legends and the other showcasing scenic spots of Kerry,” added Siobhan. “Garreth came up with 'Killarney' as the Hollywood hills idea which prompted me to think that our Irish legends should perhaps be more localised and from Killarney. Garreth and Rachelle were a joy to work with and their delivery has exceeded my expectations. I'm delighted how it has turned out and hope it pleases everyone who passes by brightening up their day a little.”
Kidney Respite Centre opens in Killarney A new holiday house for kidney transplant patients and those on dialysis has just opened in Killarney. | By Sean Moriarty The new facility on the Muckross Road will allow patients enjoy a holiday while undergoing treatment or recovering from a transplant operation. It is managed by the Irish Kidney Association (IKA) with support from the local branch. The Killarney facility is the second one in the county, an existing holiday house in Tralee has been in operation since 2006. Patients can liaise with the IKA’s head office in Dublin and they will allocate a week’s holiday at the house while at the same time booking in their thrice-weekly treatments at University Hospital Kerry (UHK) in Tralee. The facility is also suitable for patients who can self-treat and one of the bedrooms in the house is converted into a home dialysis unit.
Last week Galway man John Keady became the first kidney patient to use the new facility. Since his transplant in 2015, he has been unable to work which meant current finances would not allow for holidays. “It was like a five-star hotel,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “It is a fantastic facility and I was able to enjoy a proper holiday.” So far the local branch of the IKA have raised over €180,000 for the facility, mainly through the annual Ring of Kerry Cycle, but fundraising remains on-going to pay for the upkeep of the house and to purchase additional equipment. Proceeds from this Sunday’s Ring of Kerry Honda 50 run will go towards the new facility which will be officially opened in September. “Fundraising is on-going to pay for main-

tenance,” Theresa Looney, Local Branch Secretary told the Killarney Advertiser. “We run it on behalf of the IKA and manage bookings, cleaning staff and thing like that. There are 500 people all over Ireland awaiting a transplant and this
will allow them to have one week holiday respite in Killarney.” The annual Honda 50 run was launched on Thursday evening – more details in our dedicated motoring section on page 54.

Killarney man calls on public to clear footpaths for visually impaired
The event takes place in Scott’s Hotel this coming Bank Holiday Monday, run in association with Team Geaney’s participation in next month’s Ring of Kerry Cycle. Denis Geaney founded the cycle 36 years ago and each year he enters a team to support one local charity. Monday’s music, comedy and barbecue event is an off-shoot of Geaney’s fundraising efforts and all proceeds will go the Beaufort care centre. “All of the money raised from the barbecue will go directly to St Mary of the Angels,” Denis said. “Thanks to the generous support of the team at Scotts Hotel, the musicians and our many volunteers. We are looking forward to seeing you there.” With live music from Rosie and Derry
Healy, Dermot Moriarty, Pete Fleming, Michael O’Brien and band, Sam and Ina and more, as well as a special guest appearance by Bernard Casey, it promises to be a great day out for all the family. Well-known local Glenflesk-based fundraiser and entertainer Derry Healy is one of the organisers. “This is our second year having a barbecue and last year was an outstanding success after we raised €6,000 for the Ian O’Connell Trust,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “This year all of the money raised will go directly to St Mary’s of the Angels. We are grateful to all the musicians who give their time freely and are looking forward to a guest appearance by Bernard Casey.” The ‘Local Gossip’ star will appear at some point during the afternoon. “Expect comedy and burgers, that is all I can say,” Bernard told The Killarney Advertiser. “My girlfriend’s brother attends St Mary’s of the Angels, so I am well aware of the good work they do and happy to support it in any way I can.” The barbecue costs €10 per person and takes place in Scotts Courtyard from 2pm
Visually impaired Morgan joins national campaign | By Michelle Crean A Killarney man who has just over five percent vision is lending his voice to a new national campaign – calling on the public to clear the way for the visually impaired. Morgan Pierce (43) from Cahernane Meadows, who was born with low vision says that although people don’t cause intentional harm to those with sight loss – he’s now joining the National Council for the Blind’s new online video campaign asking the public to keep paths clear. The service, which helps thousands of people with vision loss nationally, has released the 40 second YouTube video ‘NCBI - Clear The Way Day’ showing the difficulties people with impaired vision face on a daily basis as they try to navigate their way through towns and cities countrywide.
Morgan says some of the biggest issues he faces daily are street furniture, bicycles attached to poles, commercial bins left out and suitcases along the streets. “People don’t do it intentionally,” Morgan explained to the Killarney Advertiser this week. “When people haven’t experienced it they don’t understand what we go through. If someone parks on a footpath for two minutes – it’s quick for them but for someone with sight loss or even the elderly, it has a huge effect as they have to find another longer way around,” Morgan said. He added, Killarney town is good for cutting back hedging and trees but it’s the temporary obstacles that are causing the most distress. “I’m calling on the public to be more mindful about obstacles they place in public. If they look at the video online it might make them more aware of the difficulties we face every day.”
FUNDRAISER: Team Geaney will host a fun evening at Scott’s Hotel on Monday to raise funds for St Mary’s of the Angels.
REMEMBERING BRENDAN: The second annual Brendan O’Leary Memorial Fun Walk took place in Kilcummin on Sunday, February 17. Brendan’s wife Una would like to thank anyone who helped out in anyway and the local businesses that sponsored the prizes. An amazing €5,030 was raised for the Palliative Care Unit, University Hospital Kerry. “It was absolutely fantastic to see over 330 people take part in remembering Brendan and raising funds for a great cause too,” Una said. “Thank you.” She hopes to see you all again next year.

Schools programme will be Stephen's legacy Local mother fundraising to continue positive school programme | By Michelle Crean One local mother, whose son was murdered in Killarney 10 years ago, is hoping a school programme to prevent violence in young people will go nationwide. Lotte Lyne says she will never come to terms with the brutal murder of her teenage son Stephen (17) who was stabbed in 2009, and says it’s vital to teach empa-
thy to young children to prevent similar violent acts in future. As it comes to the 10th anniversary of his death on June 18, Lotte says she’s still devastated by his death, but choses to channel her emotions into something positive. Not only did she set up the ‘Stephen Lyne Foundation’ but three years ago introduced the ‘Roots of Empathy’ pro-

gramme to Killarney schools in a bid to stamp out violence amongst young people. It helps decrease aggression and increases social and emotional understanding. So far, the programme which is running in four Killarney primary schools is working, and she now plans to introduce a similar programme into local secondary schools this coming September. However, in order to keep the programme running she holds regular fundraisers - the next one, ‘Jump for Stephen’, a skydive on Saturday, June 15 takes place in Co Offaly. She says she chooses to believe in the goodness of humanity and will dedicate her life to creating a safer world for the next generation. "Stephen never got a chance to live his life or reach his full potential,” Lotte, speaking exclusively to the Killarney Advertiser this week, said. “The sorrow and grief we as a family live every day will never go away, but I am determined not to let it destroy us or break us. Change starts in your own community.” She said that she felt “compelled” to set up the schools programme to reach out to young people before they get caught up in a situation they may someday regret. “I do it because somebody has to. I’m doing it because I can and I must. I feel com-
Stephen Lyne
pelled to do it. It’s about creating a better and safer community for our children." She explained that the programme, which is running in St Oliver’s, Gaelscoil Faithleann, the Mercy and the Monastery, was developed 20 years ago in Canada with Barnardo’s as the lead agency in Ireland. “You have got to change the heart behind the knife, the gun, the suicide vest,” she said. “If we could do something in our own community that would have an impact. This is a year-long programme and can be implemented into any school class.” Lotte remembers Stephen as a wonderful young man who would do anything for his friends. “Stephen had a great sense of humour. He was great at sport, especially soccer, and was a very loyal, great friend. He was there for people." One hundred percent of the funds raised from fundraisers go to the programme, she added. “What we are doing is more relative than ever. It’s not for Stephen - it’s for all the young people. We have to do something or it’ll get worse, little by little there’ll be change. This will be Stephen's legacy." Motorcycles and music make for magic weekend | By Sean Moriarty Killarney will echo the sound of motorcycle engines this weekend as thousands are expected into town for the 13th annual Ireland BikeFest. Ireland’s only free open biker festival takes place from today (Friday) until Monday, and two-wheel fans from all over the world will gather to celebrate 72 hours of biker heaven, with some stunning machines and kick back to the sounds of brilliant live music at the Gleneagle Hotel and across the town. Ireland BikeFest is based at the specially constructed Bike Village in the car park between the Gleneagle and the Brehon Hotel. Action is not limited to the Muckross Road with one of the festival highlights being the annual parade through the streets of Killarney on Sunday morning.
Hundreds of bikes, basically anything with an engine and two wheels, will cavalcade through town in a colourful and noisy celebration of two-wheeled motoring. “Ireland BikeFest has a broad appeal – it’s a feat for the senses,” Breffni Ingerton, Ireland BikeFest Chairperson, said. “The Killarney Town Centre Parade and the Custom Bike Show are always festival highlights however it’s undoubtedly the laidback friendly party atmosphere of the Bike Village which sees visitors from across the globe return year after year.” Music lovers can tune in headline acts including Qween, JoanovArc, Eurosmith, Live Lizzy and festival legends Hells Bells. And like last year, Ireland Bike Fest 2019 will be supporting Muscular Dystrophy Ireland.

Columnist ANNE LUCEY gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry and beyond
Fine Gael has a chequered history in Killarney The spot light, post-election, is on Fine Gael in Killarney where the huge talking point is how come the town has among the most high flying Fine Gaelers in the country - but manages now not to have a single representative at ground level. The town has a high flying MEP in Sean Kelly, the first to be elected in Ireland South this week. It has a real Leo insider in Brendan Griffin, who ironically for Killarney is no less than the Tourism Minister and the ministry headquarters are in town, thanks to John O’Donoghue and it should never be forgotten. And Mark Kennelly, the arch strategist in the recovery of Fine Gael under Enda Kenny, is from Cleeney. This is, not to mention, the fact Enda himself has a second home in Kilcummin and very popular in-laws around Tiernaboul. And no-one should overlook the influence of long term Fine Gael senator Paul Coghlan, a former town councillor, whose closeness to the Dublin political media and access to the highest corridors is legendary in media circles. So how is it between them all they couldn’t hang onto a humble Council seat - their only one in the tourism capital of Ireland - where the quota was just 1,584 votes? John Sheahan polled 827 first preference votes, third last of the 10 candidates. He was pipped at the post by Marie Moloney, the former Labour senator and councillor, who has really been out of local politics since 2011. Paul Coghlan, whom I met at the
count centre, played down the loss saying it was always difficult for Fine Gael in Killarney, and he in fact had rescued the seat on the town council; Sean Kelly on radio, said the loss, and the fact the premier tourist town had no FG councillor, was “a disaster”. Brendan Griffin hasn’t said much – I heard him on Radio Kerry and I felt he was a bit sheepish, but that is understandable given he is getting it in the neck too in west Kerry where supporters of his first cousin and parliamentary assistant Tommy Griffin tried to take the seat off Cosaí Fitzgerald, and demanded the papers be rechecked. Something that did not go down at all well in Cosai land and won’t be forgotten seeing as Cosai was such a help to him first day. I tried to call the busy minister - five times - and left a number of messages and texts over two days - but to no avail. Actually while I’m at it, Griffin and others who are too high and mighty to answer calls to hacks, could take a page out of the Healy-Rae manual of how not to lose elections: the big secret is the Raes always answer the phone, whether it is a fellow trying to get a pothole filled at 7am, or a businessman, or, even on occasion, I have no doubt, a Taoiseach, and they always
Why don’t they work together to beat the rhododendron? I don’t want to get lost in the rhododendron bushes argument - which is turning into a right pot boiler! This week the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) has taken the unusual step of issuing a full public statement criticising the dressing down by the Irish Times of the rhododendron programme - and this was followed by
a robust defence by Killarney ranger Peter O’Toole, businessman Johnny McGuire and Chamber President Paul Sherry, on Facebook and later on Radio Kerry. On the other hand, Groundwork, the organisation who packed their rather uppity scientific bags in dismay and who were lauded in the controversial Irish Times article by Paddy Woodworth, have been lively on Twitter etc.
talk to the mere journalist. There is little blame to be laid on the doorstep of John Sheahan, 12 years a councillor, and a harmless, understated and well-liked individual. So poorly was he supported by the FG machine, he was spotted on occasions having to canvass on his own. The loss reflects badly on Fine Gael’s senior public figures who can’t be bothered building up the party structure, so intent are they on their own careers. Fine Gael has a chequered history in Killarney and indeed in south Kerry. It was so fractious it failed to get a TD between 1989 and 2007. And when Tom Sheahan, brother of John, won the seat back, I saw old blue shirts crying with joy at the Great Southern Hotel in Killarney. If it’s not in-fighting in Kerry, it’s poor structure. It all reminds me of the dark days of the late ‘70s and early 1980s, when, at one stage there were actually two Fine Gael offices operating – one from a well-known hostelry, and another from the party’s public office on Kenmare place. In fighting has been vicious historically in Killarney and has much to do with at least one fine councillor losing a seat, and others have not had a fair run at the thing. But the loss of Sheahan’s seat after 12 years on Kerry County Council has to be a blow to Brendan Griffin. It says a few things to me – the Tourism Minister is not doing it for Killarney - the seat of tourism. The VAT has been a disaster, and most importantly he is Peter, who has developed the current strategy of injecting mature plants, which has seen hectares cleared, says Groundwork were after the saplings and seedlings while the Meitheal and the contractors are clearing the mature woodlands. The real men in other words are tackling the forests, and groundwork is for wimps, said I to myself! And Peter points to the clearing already done. Rhododendron is out of control in Killarney and we need the wimps as well as the Rambos of this world to beat it. Why don’t they work together against this huge enemy?
not seen to be doing it. On radio he pointed to all the Independents on the Council. That is simply not good enough. The only Fine Gael seat in Killarney has been lost under his watch. There is astonishingly now only one Fine Gael councillor in the whole of south Kerry. Patrick Connor-Scarteen managed to increase his share of the vote, but I hear there is great credit due to an intense campaign by his future father-in-law, the Killarney solicitor, Padraig O’Connell, in Cahersiveen and the Ring, as well as an undoubted charm of wife-tobe Katie, who was on the canvass in Kenmare. North Kerry’s remarkable performance by Fine Gael with three of the six candidates is a warning shot for south Kerry and for Brendan Griffin, and who knows, for Michael HealyRae too – North Kerry wants their own TD and they bitterly regret not voting for Jimmy Deenihan in 2016!
Opinion Polls Were we talking about opinion polls last week? The Red C exit poll was all over the shop and had the Greens jumping up and down like a party on jungle juice…all over the country. Alas, it seems to have gotten it right only patchily in the Europeans. The Green success in the local elections is mostly in urban areas, which tells you something about the Green thinking these days: largely city dwellers who have limited understanding of country matters, perhaps? They are out again now furious at the prospect of oil off Kerry… a prospect that could yield great dividends for this most rural of counties. That Tralee was the only area where the Greens came very close in Kerry, lends weight to the urban nature of the current Greens. And, has anyone at all raised the fact that the Greens got a huge - and I would say unnatural boost with the election - coinciding with those ‘Friday for Future’ protests? The big Green step occurred in Killarney where Independent Niall O’Callaghan, ran a posterless virtual campaign, disturbing no-one – and romped home! His 1,000 plus first preferences echoed the 1,000 plus watching him on his Facebook live performance on the eve of the election!

RESULTS Fine Gael fails to win seat in Killarney 16
NEWS
| By Anne Lucey
One of the big talking points in Killarney this week - following last weekend’s local elections - is the loss in Killarney of the only Fine Gael seat in the tourism capital. Despite producing some of the biggest political hitters in Fine Gael nationally, the party failed to get a candidate to run alongside outgoing councillor and Mayor, John Sheahan, in the first place. Cllr Sheahan lost narrowly to former Labour senator and former councillor, Marie Moloney, who makes a return to local politics after an almost 10 year gap since first elected to the Council in Kerry. She is former secretary to Labour TD, Breeda Moynihan Cronin, – whose seat was taken by Tom Sheahan in 2007. In Killarney, candidate Niall Kelleher increased his vote - but the party did not win a second seat. The spectacular performance of the Healy-Raes across three districts with three councillors now, all of whom topped the poll, has dented Fianna Fail’s growing confidence of taking Danny Healy-Rae’s seat. Asked about the impact of the weekend’s vote on the general election, Cllr Johnny Healy-Rae, who is emerging as the lead voice of the Healy-Raes at ground level, said: “We’ll be fighting very hard to win two seats in Kerry the next time. And whoever will come for it, they’ll have to take it off us because we won’t go down with-
out a fight!” Sinn Fein meanwhile have recorded an important set back with the loss of their only seat in the old south Kerry, with the failure of Damian Quigg to be re-elected. Quigg's seat was an important stronghold won in 2014. Sinn Fein failed once more to make a break-through in Killarney. The party is once again north of the Maine River and confined to Tralee and north Kerry - not a great prospect for them in the next general election. Effectively now the new Council will have 10 Independents, and Fianna Fail will be the biggest party, with 10 also; Fine Gael have returned with a chastened seven, down two with losses in Killarney and the old Tralee area; Sinn Fein will be down one to four, and Labour, thanks to Killarney gain, will return with the same number. But there is a health warning with the Independents: Three of them bear the name of Healy-Rae, one, Tralee’s Sam Locke is declared Healy-Rae affiliate and the jury is still out if the family friendship between the very independent minded Niall ‘Botty’ O’Callaghan and the HealyRaes will transfer into support at political level.

Huge support for Kelly’s European bid Killarney politician Sean Kelly has this week described his election to the European Parliament as “without doubt the happiest moment of my political career”. Kelly was elected to the European Parliament for a third successive term on Tuesday, after topping the poll in the Ireland South constituency. The Fine Gael candidate was first elected in 2009 and retained his seat in 2014 by polling 92,579 first preferences votes - but exceeded all expectation by landing 119,883 votes this time around. The Ballydowney man was the first MEP to be elected for the area, reaching the quota on the ninth count. “I am so humbled. I never expected to get such a vote,” he said. “I am so grateful to all my team, my family and Fine Gael. People saw we were there to do the work for Ireland south. We ran a tight and efficient campaign and it ob-
viously proved effective. This is without doubt the happiest moment of my political career.” The results of the Ireland South Constituency remain provisional after it was announced on Thursday evening, just as the Killarney Advertiser was about to go print, that a full recount had been ordered. The dispute centres on the battle between Sinn Féin's Liadh Ní Riada and the Green Party's Grace O'Sullivan, for the final seat in the constituency. The recount, which won’t get under way until next week, is unlikely to effect Kelly, but he will have to put any official announcements on hold until the recount is competed.

Stephanie tragically lost her life at the age of 20 years in November 2011. The cycle starts and finishes at the Nagle Rice Community Centre in Milltown. Cyclists can register tomorrow night (Saturday), from 7.30pm - 8.45pm and Sunday from 8am. The cycle starts at 9am with registration fee €20. All cyclists and volunteers will enjoy a barbecue and live music afterwards.
The cycle incorporates two distances of 40km and 80km taking in Killorglin, Caragh Lake, Beaufort, Fossa and finishes in Milltown. It offers an opportunity for novice cyclists to get out and cycle, and for cyclists to train for the upcoming Ring of Kerry Cycle. “We look forward to another great day out and greatly appreciate all the support from cyclists, sponsors and volunteers in aid of two worthy suicide prevention services in Kerry,” Dan Joe O’Sullivan, father of the late Stephanie, said. “We hope that we can prevent future loss of lives and the trauma of losing a family member to suicide.”
Golf fundraiser for Special Olympic Club
The popular golf day in aid of the Kerry Stars Special Olympic Club will return to Beaufort Golf Club after a two-year absence. | By Sean Moriarty The event, which takes place on June 8, is one of the biggest fundraisers for the local Special Olympic Club and comes on the back of one of the most successful seasons for the club. “We have 95 athletes competing in various sports within the club and we need to be able to pay for travel expenses and team kits through the season,”
Tom Tobin, Club Chairman, said. “We don’t get any funding from the Government or Special Olympics Ireland.” In March this year Gary O’Sullivan from Castleisland won two medals at the Special Olympics World Games in Abu Dhabi. Teams of three are invited to enter the golf classic by contacting Tom on 087 2338575. Slots are available from late afternoon.

Couples celebrate significant wedding anniversaries Married couples celebrating a significant anniversary this year were invited to renew their vows at a special celebration Mass in St Mary’s Cathedral on Saturday last. The Mass was open to those celebrating their 25th, 40th, 50th, or 60th wedding anniversary. Celebrated by Fr Niall Howard, one couple John and Maureen Kiely from Woodlawn, were celebrating 55 years of marriage at the annual Mass. One couple from Ohio, Timothy and Barbara Weaver, who read about the Mass on the Killarney Parish website, joined the local celebrants on their 25th anniversary adding a special memory to their holiday to Kerry. Afterwards, everyone was invited to the Presbytery for refreshments and conversation. There, John and Maureen
Kiely, as the longest married couple, cut the special anniversary cake on behalf of all gathered couples. “It was a great occasion and everyone enjoyed themselves,” Parish Secretary Sheila Leavy said. “We do it every year so parishioners can celebrate and acknowledge their special anniversary. It is not just restricted to couples married in the Cathedral, it is open to all. The couple from Ohio emailed us and we were able to accommodate them. They were chatting away with the locals and telling them where they were from. It was all very light-hearted and there was good banter.”

Conor Myles and Dan O’Connor,
Partners of Terence F. Casey & Company Solicitors, 99 College Street, Killarney, present information on legal issues
LEGAL EFFECT OF DIVORCE REFERENDUM The Constitution Referendum on divorce passed with 82.07% support. The Electorate had been asked to vote on the 38th Amendment of the Constitution (Dissolution of Marriage Bill) 2016. Upon until now couples could only apply to the Courts for a Decree of Divorce if they had been living separate and apart for 4 of the previous 5 years. The result of the Referendum will remove the time period required from the Constitution and will permit the Oireachtas to bring in legislation allowing for time requirements to apply for a divorce. It is expected that the Government will now legislate to provide for a two year period of living separate and apart prior to applying to the Courts for a Decree of Divorce. It is also expected that once this legislation has been
passed and implemented that it may help to avoid the need for separate Judicial Separation Proceedings to be instituted which should serve to help to streamline the legal process involved in determining issues such as Property Rights, Pension Rights, Access and Maintenance issues resulting from a marriage breakup. The result of the Referendum will also place the recognition of foreign divorces explicitly in the Constitution.

Pupils beat stress - and make €500!
Stress hasn’t been a bad thing at one local school as pupils used it to make a profitable business! | By Michelle Crean Fifth and Sixth class pupils from Barraduff National School created a project, entitling it ‘Let's Confess About Stress' and presented it at the Junior Entrepreneur National Showcase Day in Dublin last week. In the RDS, they showed their product, a workbook consisting of four sections of pupil experiences and pupil designed activities, Gearoid O Súilleabháin, Principal, told the Killarney Advertiser. “We started the programme in November where each pupil came up with one idea,” he said.
“Then the class was divided into groups, and they each presented a group idea in a Dragon’s Den style process, with an eventual winner a pupil workbook to help children of their age deal with stress and anxiety.” Once selected, the whole class rowed in behind the project, entitling it ‘Let's Confess About Stress'. The class divided into five groups, namely, marketing, design and production, storytelling, sales and finance. “We printed 190 copies and have sold all to local schools around Killarney, making a profit of almost €500, which will go towards a new sports kit for the school.”

Thousands of revellers step back to the ‘80s
Over 3,500 revellers got ‘Into The Groove’ but weren’t ‘Dancing In The Dark’ when it came to rolling back the years on Saturday night – as they enjoyed an ‘80s themed night in the INEC. | By Michelle Crean Thousands dressed in ‘80s style clobber - from florescent tops to gogo skirts, headbands and high waist jeans for a night of nostalgia. ‘Baby D’ raised the roof with hits such as ‘Let me be your Fantasy’ for what was the biggest ‘80s disco come to Killarney. “The crowd dressed to impress with six hours of concert and dancing,” Ceara Scanlon PR and Marketing Manager with the INEC, told the Killarney Advertiser. “There were over 10 bands and attendees took a trip down memory lane with the biggest hits of the ‘80s and ‘90s.”
And she added, that due to its overwhelming success there are plans in place to repeat its success next year. “We are delighted to announce the biggest disco concert is back for the second round on May 16, 2020 - with the artists from ‘90s – ‘00s!” Music will include chart-toppers Five, SClub, Atomic Kitten, East 17, Boyzlife, Whigfield, Booty Luv, Big Brovaz, Capella and Liberty X. “We promise you will sing your heart out and dance your shoes off! Sem students finish up school year
It has been a very busy few weeks St Brendan’s College as students celebrated another year of success in and out of the class rooms. | By Sean Moriarty On Tuesday night 75 Transition Year students enjoyed their review of the year in the school chapel where both Micheal O’Meara and Robert O’Shea were named as students of the year. “Highlights of the night included the dram performance,” Sean Coffey, Principal, said. “It was the culmination of a hectic year for the lads.” Late last week the First, Second, and Third Year students completed their academic season with a night celebration at the school. “We celebrated under three categories, School and Community, Diligence and Effort and Academic Awards.” Prior to these two award nights, the schools Sixth Year students brought their final year of secondary education to a close with their annual end of year celebration. As well as presenting awards to the outgoing students, the night recognised 2018 Leaving Certificate student Corey Kissane. He was the school’s most-suc-
cessful student in last year’s Leaving Certificate and was awarded the Coláiste Bhréanainn Gold Medal. A second gold medal was awarded to past student and guest speaker Dr Aidan Forde of Saorgus Energy Ltd., the firm behind the wind farms in the Stacks Mountains outside Tralee. “Aidan reinforced to the students the importance of remaining positive and optimistic,” Mr Coffey explained. School chaplain Fr Jim Lenihan celebrated Mass for the 500 students, who were joined by their family and friends in the school chapel for the occasion. “The Parents Council pulled out all the stops on the night. They ran the barbecue that fed the 500 people present and it was a real family occasion.” Looking ahead, 270 students from the school will sit state exams, beginning next Wednesday. “There is a lot of stress in a lot of houses this week, but it is important to reinforce the positives of so many curricular and extra-curricular achievements that add so much to the school.”

Staff orchestrate 50th birthday fanfare for Tony Local musician Tony O’Flaherty is used to putting on shows so it came as huge surprise to him on Saturday night when he was the subject of a show. Tony is the Musical Director of the acclaimed Gaelic Roots performance that runs six nights a week at the Killarney Avenue Hotel. When cast members found out he was due to celebrate his 50th birthday they decided to host a surprise after-show party in his honour. Even the presence of his wife Noeleen, son Cael and daughter Roisin in the audience did not rouse his suspicions. “I am working six nights a week through the season so I wasn’t planning anything,” Tony told The Killarney Advertiser. “I had not
really planned a celebration but someone from the cast found out and put it together.” Tony, a multi-instrumentalist, is well-known around Killarney as a musician, sound engineer, producer and studio owner. He has toured extensively throughout the US and Europe with artists such as Christy Hennessy and Liam O’Connor. He owns and runs Sonas Recording Studio and clients include John Spillane Christy Moore and Ronnie Wood of the Rolling Stones.

from Maynooth, and college mates from Scotland, Dublin and Wexford. “It was a great night’s craic, I had about 40 or 50 people there, it was a great turnout and they all enjoyed themselves,” Ross, who is originally from the Ross Road and hopes to go on and complete a Masters in History at UCD next year.

Best advice for the planting season We are at the height of bedding planting season – and isn’t there a lot of choice? It can be quite overwhelming to choose wisely in the face of so many different varieties and colours. Let me try to make it a little simpler. If your pot does not get a lot of sun, let’s say, four hours minimum, I would consider it a shady spot. In this case, you are best off planting busy lizzies, salvia, nemesia or begonia. Busy lizzies come in two types, the ordinary bedding variety, which has small green leaves and only lasts a year, or the New Guinea Busy Lizzy, which can be treated like a geranium and kept over from year to year. They have larger, pointed leaves and larger flowers. Begonias also come in two distinct varieties, the bedding begonia, which has small rounded leaves and comes in shades of white, pink and red, or the tuber begonias, which are much bigger. They have large showy flowers in almost any colour, either trailing or upright. The trailing begonias have a longer narrower leaf than their upright counterparts. If you have a sunny spot, you are spoiled for choice. Geraniums are always an ex-
cellent choice. Trailing geraniums are a fabulous, and in my opinion, overlooked, choice instead of trailing petunias. They do not grow to the length of the petunia, but they are tidier and fresher looking, for longer. Petunias tend to go sticky halfway through the summer, this is usually caused by long sunny days with too little water. There can be some confusion about the difference between trailing and upright petunias, surfinias, million bells and viva petunias. Most upright petunias will be sold in trays of six, while the trailing ones will be sold singly. Surfinia is the name used for trailing petunias. Viva petunias are often semi-trailing and million bells have smaller flowers. Other plants which are great for tubs and pots are salvia, there are a myriad of beautiful tall varieties, such as Wendy’s wishes, pink, and Amistad, blue. Fuchsia Thalia is also a great choice as a feature plant. It has dark red foliage and long orange bells. It lasts all through the summer and can be kept over for the following year, like a geranium. Best for dry spots, especially graveyards, are bedding begonias. They cope with drought, rain, wind and neglect, and flower regardless!

Getting the balance right coming up to exams The last couple of weeks leading up to exams can be difficult. Students who have worked hard are feeling exhausted, while many feel overwhelmed by the amount they have left to do and worry about running out of time. Regardless of the work rate up to now, it is important to get the balance right in the lead up to the Leaving and Junior Certificate which begin on Wednesday June 5.
CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING SUGGESTIONS:
• The last week Plan the remaining time carefully. At this stage the study plan should have the essential topics to be revised in each subject, taking account the schedule of the actual exams. Focus on Exam Paper layout, sample questions and marking schemes. Practice timing in key questions. If you are concerned about your timing in certain subjects pick a couple of questions and practice against the clock. Vary the routine of subjects and topics. At this stage it can be more difficult to concentrate so move from one subject to another more frequently. For example, revise a topic in geography and
then move onto a question in accounting. Avoid social media while studying. Put away the mobile phone. A huge amount of valuable study time is lost by responding to messages on the likes of WhatsApp and Snapchat, so for the coming weeks put away the phone while studying. Maintain some balance. Exercise, fresh air and healthy eating are hugely beneficial and ensure the best chance of staying focused, maximising concentration and making optimum use of the remaining time. They also help to perform more effectively in exams. If you are feeling very stressed try some breathing exercises, meditation or mindfulness. Access your support network. Lean on those around you and take any practical and emotional support that they offer. • The night before Rest the mind. Finish up study early in
Niamh Dwyer Guidance Counsellor
the evening and do some exercise, play or listen to music, watch a movie, basically pick something that helps you to switch off before going to sleep. Organise yourself. Make sure you have everything ready for the morning in advance – bag, uniform or clothes, materials, etc. • On the day Get up early. Give yourself plenty time. Have a good breakfast and have a look
over some brief notes, flashcards or mind-maps. Arrive early. Students will need to sign in the first morning which will take some extra time. Allow yourself time to sit quietly and get yourself mentally ready, either in the exam hall or another quiet corner of the school. Try to stay away from people who may add to your stress levels and focus on the subject at hand. Avoid post-mortems. While it is natural to want to discuss the paper with friends after the exam, avoid detailed post-mortems as they tend to add to stress levels. Give every exam your best shot. There are bound to be some subjects that you prefer or feel more confident in, but try to do your very best in each exam. Keep things in perspective. You are almost at the end of this tough journey and once you get over the final hurdle you will get to enjoy a study-free summer and look forward to the exciting next chapter. Kennedy became the first serving President to visit
Ireland in 1963,” said an airport spokesperson. “This visit will put Ireland at the centre of world media attention and, as a result, it will create an opportunity to showcase the attractiveness of the West of Ireland, the Wild Atlantic Way and the strong US FDI located at Shannon.” Meanwhile the man himself, who will hold a bilateral meeting with Taoiseach Leo Varadkar at Shannon Airport when he arrives, said: "We're going to be staying at Doonbeg in Ireland because it's convenient and a great place. We'll be meeting with a lot of the Irish officials. It'll be an overnight stay and I look forward to that."

New documentary to mark Charles de Gaulle’s Irish visit STATE VISIT: President and Sabina Higgins visited the Kerry Writers' Centre and attended a ceremony at St John’s Theatre and unveiled a commemorative plaque to mark the naming of Listowel as Ireland’s Tidiest Town on Saturday.
President Higgins visits Listowel President Higgins visited Listowel last weekend to celebrate the town’s success in the Tidy Towns competition. The President and his wife Sabina attended a ceremony at St John’s Theatre and unveiled a commemorative plaque to mark the naming of Listowel as Ireland’s Tidiest Town on Saturday. Each year, the President pays tribute to the Tidy Towns competition, visiting the winning town and meeting the volunteers whose ideas and commitment form the heart of the initiative. “Listowel is a market town and, since 2000, has been designated as one of Ireland’s 26 heritage towns, but has, perhaps, not heretofore been considered a tourist town in the manner that many other towns in County Kerry have been considered for decades. I believe that this win should put Listowel on the tourist map, making it a potential desti-
nation for both our overseas visitors and Irish tourists,” he said. “Of course, Listowel has a heritage that is precious, unique – the written and spoken word. Listowel is well-known for its writers’ festival. It is often referred to as the ‘literary capital of Ireland’, nationally and internationally. With internationally acclaimed playwrights and authors such as John B. Keane, who I would have no doubt, been proud of the award. It is well remembered among the local community that he was a big supporter of Tidy Towns.” President and Sabina Higgins also visited the Kerry Writers' Centre in Listowel. The Centre is a not-for-profit organisation celebrating the work and legacy of the great Kerry writers, including Keane, Bryan McMahon, Brendan Kennelly, Maurice Walsh and George Fitzmaurice. The President and Sabina also met with a range of voluntary groups that use the centre as a base for their activities.
A French TV crew has been visiting Kerry and Ireland, to create a new documentary to mark the 50th anniversary of Charles de Gaulle’s visit to Ireland. They are here as guests of Tourism Ireland and Fáilte Ireland. The crew has been capturing footage at various locations in Kerry associated with De Gaulle’s Irish trip in 1969 – including Derrynane Beach, Sneem and Kenmare. Filming also took place at the launch of a photographic exhibition called ‘De Gaulle: A quiet holiday’ – 24 original photographs about the visit in 1969 – that is going on permanent display at the Sneem Hotel. The documentary will air later this year on two popular French television channels, France 3 and Public Sénat, and will be seen by millions of viewers across France.
“We were delighted to invite this French TV crew to Kerry and Ireland, to showcase some of the many beautiful locations visited by Charles de Gaulle in 1969,” Monica MacLaverty, Tourism Ireland’s Manager Southern Europe, said. “The documentary filmed here will be seen by millions of viewers – or potential holidaymakers for Ireland – encouraging them to follow in de Gaulle’s footsteps and put Ireland on their holiday ‘wishlist’ for 2019. TV and film are strong influencers for prospective holidaymakers and Tourism Ireland regularly works with overseas TV and production companies to facilitate making TV programmes, to generate positive exposure for the island of Ireland around the world.” France is one of the top four markets for tourism to the island of Ireland and 2018 was another record-breaking year for French visitor numbers to Ireland.

Blind ‘America’s Got Talent’ performer gets 12m views Pianist and singer Kodi Lee was met with a standing ovation and the golden buzzer for his performance on Season 14 of ‘America's Got Talent’ on Wednesday night. Lee, who is blind and has autism,
stunned the crowd with a flawless cover of Donny Hathaway's ‘A Song For You’. The 22-year-old contestant was accompanied on stage by his mother, who gave him a pep talk before he shocked the judges and crowd with his voice and piano playing skills.
"We found out that he loved music really early on," Lee's mother, Tina, told the crowd. "Through music and performing, he was able to withstand living in this world. Because when you're autistic, it's really hard to do what everyone else does. It actually has saved his life, play-
ing music." As well as the 12 million YouTube hits, his performance was watched by 1.6 million people on the show’s own Facebook page, the reel attracted 290,000 comments and has been shared 1.6 million times.

New low temperature, no strip, waxing system We are just back from an amazing training event with the world’s number one waxing products, Depileve. They have been a world innovator for the past 40 years and their experience in wax formulation is second to none. Many try to copy - but none have succeeded as it is an industry leader for decades. It’s a Spanish brand of wax and their new film wax is a revolutionary concept as it has a combination of traditional strip wax and more recently favoured hot wax, so you get the best of both waxes combined. It’s ideal for intimate areas as well as male waxing, and doesn’t pull the skin and even causes less redness. A few clients I have used it on for bikini waxing have commented on the slow regrowth and much smoother after effect – they are definitely seeing the difference. Its oils help to leave the skin smooth as the wax has one hundred percent natural active ingredients and oils. The plasticising agents help cut dry-
ing time and enhance adhesion to even the shortest hair, so there’s no need for strips. It can be used on a lower temperature than hot wax, commonly referred to as the “pull off wax”, so it’s ideal for the underarm area as it can catch hair that is growing in different directions. This is a low temperature, no strip required, waxing system that is extremely comfortable, hygienic, long lasting and virtually pain free. It’s ideal for the most delicate areas such as facial waxing. Seeing is believing, so if you have booked the holidays, make an appointment for your next wax treatment with this amazing film wax. Call Jill now on 064 6632966 to book your appointments or for further information.

There are phenomenal supports available for new enterprises through both South Kerry Development Partnership CLG (SKDP) and the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection (DEASP) to give them every chance to succeed.
ACTIVE LIFESTYLE: Holy Cross Mercy School, Killarney held their annual ‘Active Week’ and were presented with their Health Promoting Schools’ Flag.
Local pupils receive healthy school flag This week, pupils and staff at Holy Cross Mercy School, Killarney held their annual ‘Active Week’. All classes participated in a variety of daily activities such as football, dancing, orienteering, pitch and putt, athletics and circuit training. New to this year’s ‘Active Week’ programme was trampolining while the highlight of the week was the presentation of the Health Promoting Schools’ Flag. Gavin White, Kerry Senior Football Team Captain, Amanda
Brosnan, Kerry Ladies Football Captain and Anne Culloty (Health Promotion Officer with the HSE), joined pupils, Ursula Coffey (Principal) and staff, to celebrate the award and to launch the flag. “The flag recognises the ongoing promotion of physical health, mental health and well-being in the school through inschool activities, after-school activities, school-community links and participation in a wide variety of national programmes and initiatives,” Ursula Coffey said.
That was the message from The Busy Botanist co-founder, Clair Kelly, who was speaking to new start-ups at a networking evening in Killarney recently. This business has enjoyed considerable success since its foundation some two years ago in supplying organic naturally caffeine-free herbal teas to both Irish and overseas customers. Speaking at the event organised by SKDP, and which was attended by some 40 start-up businesses, Clair said that her key advice for all of them was to attend all of the events suggested by the advisers or do something they suggest is what really helps a business to grow and flourish. Gaining experience and networking is what Michael Kenneally of the DEASP pointed out to those present and that in addition to their weekly payment, start-up businesses could also get financial support with the costs of setting up the business through the Enterprise Support Grant scheme. Elements that are
covered in this scheme include capital outlays, insurance costs and accountancy costs, however a person has to be approved for the Back to Work Enterprise Allowance scheme. Enterprise Officer with SKDP Joanne Griffin added that in addition to the enterprise support grant, SKDP can also provide additional capital support for start-up businesses through a once off grant scheme offering up to 65 percent funding to a maximum of €500. Aisling O’Sullivan Darcy of the LEADER programme also outlined to those present the range of supports potentially available through the enterprise stream of LEADER funding. Anyone interested in starting their own business and who is currently in receipt of a social welfare payment should contact Joanne Griffin in the SKDP Killorglin Office on 066 9761615 for further information.
WELCOME
TO OUR MAY EDITION OF HOME AND LIVING
The sun is shining intermittently but at least we are getting some dry weather in between the showers. It’s great to get back to looking at the garden and exterior of our homes for a change. This month we are looking at both exteriors and interiors by extending your home. We generally extend homes for the luxury of space and light, and if it’s all done with some thought, it can add so much to the exterior of your home as well. We often overlook how we feel about our home from the outside with the daily running and racing. That feeling we got when we first drove into our new home is often ignored after the first few years and extending your home can make you fall in love with it all over again, both inside and out. We've all seen the beautiful kitchen extensions in most magazines we pick up with the light streaming in, which, if you have the budget and space for is great, but as you can see from our front cover, you don't always need a huge extension to get the best from your home. Often some extra space for your table and chairs or an extra seating area is all that is required - and it frees up that much needed space in your kitchen for that open plan feel. If you’re thinking about adding that much needed master ensuite, or just decorating the one you have, Kadri looks at creating a moody bedroom “to sleep, perchance to dream” with gorgeous dusky pink. Next month, we are looking at the all-important children’s room and changing it up for your budding teenager!

FOR PLANNING YOUR EXTENSION
top tips
Extending is a great way to create much needed extra space in your home, whether to accommodate a growing family or to adapt to modern living requirements, and is often cheaper than moving house. If you’re considering extending for the first time, or are keen for project success, these 10 key rules will set you on the right path.
1. ONLY EXTEND IF IT MAKES SENSE In some circumstances, it is better to move than to extend. If an extension will spoil the property, or will leave you with no garden, and put the price of your house above the existing ceiling of house prices in the area, then it is best to move. But if an extension will improve the existing home, adding both space and value to the property, then it makes complete sense.
2. MAKE A CONSIDERED BRIEF Start by defining what the new space should achieve and what problems the extension should solve. Unless you can tell your architect or builder what is missing, then they won’t be able to make the extension more than a simple addition of rooms. This description should be more than ‘add a bedroom and bathroom’ or ‘make the ground floor bigger’. These statements are not wrong but it helps to think more about the added benefits, for example if you are extending a kitchen:
• • • •
Where does the light come in? What I want to use the extension for (dining/living)? Do I want to sit and enjoy a view or see my garden? Do I need an ensuite for my bedroom extension?
The architect/builder will solve and come up with ideas, but the best solutions come from being set the best questions from a client with challenging thoughts.
3. C HOOSE MATERIALS CAREFULLY Sometimes the material choices are obvious and the existing house demands the extension should follow suit with a subservient extension. If the house has no overriding character or style, then a contrast can improve both parts. If you are going to contrast an existing house with materials that vary, then the solution has to be of high quality and well thought through. A bland extension on an ordinary house is simply bland; if it also stands out because the materials look wrong, then the whole effect is ruined. The materials are an intrinsic part of the extension style so don’t pick materials at the end as an afterthought, or because they were ‘on offer’. Remember, you have to live with this for many years.
4. GET THE SIZE RIGHT Getting the right size for an extension is probably the biggest challenge. There is no set rule, but many times extensions added to buildings can spoil the original house because they are too big and dominant. When thinking about additional spaces, consider how they can combine or improve existing spaces, rather than simply adding more.
5. GIVE THOUGHT TO ARCHITECTURAL STYLE Every house has a style, built in a certain period or with particular materials. So the architectural style that the extension takes on is important to the combined result. An older house can have an extension that matches or contrasts. If you are going to match a building, then the proportions, details and materials must be very good to make it work and appear authentic. So is a contrast easier? Not necessarily so. If you want a modern extension on an older property, the same rules of proportion apply but the new extension must add something. This could be more glass in contrast to a solid form, or a flash of colour in contrast to a neutral palette.
6. RESPECT NEIGHBOURING PROPERTIES One of the biggest questions on a semi or a terrace property is the effect that the extension or alteration has on its neighbour’s property. Try to design your new extension with respect and awareness to neighbouring houses, you don't want your house to stick out for all the wrong reasons.
7. QUALITY VS. QUANTITY So, how much will it cost to build? It is always better to build with better materials and better design than build more space of less quality. If you are going to build large and can’t afford everything, then plan to fit out the space later rather than cheapen everything.
8. EXTEND OR REPLACE Many people now alter a house so significantly that the question is not “should we extend?” but “should we knock it down and replace?” There is a point when you are extending when it might be easier. However, reusing existing buildings, where possible, is more environmentally friendly and can provide a great base to create the dream home.
9. PREPARE TO LIVE THROUGH THE MESS If you are extending and living in the house then prepare
for disruption, mess and dust. Many people have said they will live in the house and come to regret it. If you can move out and leave the builders to get on, there are real advantages: • The build can be faster and it also saves money • The builders can turn power, water and heat off • They don’t have to tidy up all the time, and there are fewer arguments over the kettle! Most people have to stay while building goes on, so agree ground rules on tidying up as you go. Seal up as many rooms as possible and invest in dustsheets to protect furniture, as plaster dust seems to get everywhere. Above all, keep smiling throughout the process, which can be difficult when you're washing up in a plastic bowl and eating out of a microwave, but think about the end result.
10. A SSESS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN COST AND VALUE When you are planning your build, work through the costs at the beginning. Only you can decide what constitutes good value. The cost can be determined by the quantity surveyor or the builder but only you, the client, can say if that is worth it in monetary, enjoyment or usefulness terms. Always have a contingency, you will want that more expensive floor, or extra window, often with all the planning in the world things go over budget, so make allowances for this and it makes these decisions easier, when you're knee deep in dust and just want the builders gone so you can have a pajama day!
Choosing
LITTLE GREEN PAINT
a kitchen colour scheme The kitchen is often the heart of the family home. A place you can utilize colour to create a vibrant, inspiring space to reflect your interior style. Be bold with dark shades or produce a simple, neutral scheme with a highlight of colour to reflect your personal style. To add texture and pattern, use wallpaper to create a welcoming space for dining and entertaining. Our range of finishes provide a durable, beautiful effect for walls and woodwork, including kitchen cabinets. Our paints have been specially formulated to withstand busy family life, little hands and even pets.
N CONSIDER EXISTING COLOURS
When choosing colours for your kitchen, try to decide what sort of style you are looking to achieve, taking into consideration colours that already exist within the space. Surfaces, tiles, flooring and artwork are all elements that should be included
PLANNING ADVICE
FROM KERRY COUNTY COUNCIL QUESTION
with the following:
I’m building an extension. Do I need planning permission? ANSWER SMALL-SCALE domestic extensions, including conservatories, do not require planning permission if the extension is to the rear of the house and complies
• The original floor area of the house is not increased by more than 40sq m. Where the house has been extended before, the new and existing extension cannot exceed 40sq m in total
• For terraced or semi-detached houses, the floor area of any extension above ground level does not exceed 12 square metres (including previous extensions) • Any extension above ground floor level is at least 2m from any boundary • Any extension does not exceed the height of the house • Any extension does not reduce the area of private open space, reserved
as colours within your palette. If there are any architectural features or areas of interest within the kitchen that you would like to draw attention to, consider using colour to highlight these.
NSAMPLE COLOURS IN SITU
When beginning your decorating project, take time to research schemes that you would like to recreate and browse images on Pinterest or magazines for inspiration. Consider how the space, orientation and light in the room will affect the colour. Order sample pots of your selected shades and paint out large swatches onto A4 pieces of paper. Place them on different walls around the kitchen throughout the day to see the impact of varying natural light on the colour. Colours used: Lamp Black and Loft White. Little Green paints are available from Corcorans Furniture and Carpets Killarney.
for the occupants of the house, to less than 25sq m There are also rules about the height allowed in such an extension. These include: • If the rear wall of the house does not include a gable, the height of the walls of the extension must not exceed the height of the rear wall of the house • If the rear wall has a gable, the walls of the extension shall not be higher than the sidewalls of the house • In the case of a flat roofed extension, the height of the highest part of the roof may not exceed the height of the eaves or parapet. There are also rules about the required distances between windows in extensions, the facing boundary of the adjoining property and the use of the roof of the extension. It is important to note that there are a number of instances where exemptions do not apply, i.e. planning permission will be required no matter how minor the development and Article 9 of the Planning & Development Regulations 2001 - 2015 identifies these instances. If you need guidance on building an extension and planning requirements you can contact Kerry County Council’s Planning Department on 066-7183582

BEDROOM A good nights sleep is the foundation for the day ahead. In the name of an elegant, comfortable and restful ambience the master bedroom refurbishment was undertaken. The sense of luxury was given by introducing various metallic elements such as silver door knobs, rose gold wallpaper and silver cushions. The myriad of different textures used to dress the bed and the velvet curtains add a sense of warmth to the overall interior design scheme. The framed wallpaper adds depth to
the look and makes the space appear elegant. The blush pink walls with grey-purple wardrobes gives a nice balance between feminine and masculine beauty. It is time to bring some visual drama to your bedroom. Interior Design by KADRI BORMEISTER

Honda 50 run to raise funds for Irish Kidney Association The annual Ring of Kerry Honda 50 takes places this coming Sunday with up to 130 of the culturally popular bikes set to take part.
FORD FAIR: Last year’s inaugural Irish Ford Fair at the Banna Beach Resort was a massive success . It will return to the venue on September 7 and 8 this year. Photo: Kerry Motor Club.
Second annual Irish Ford Fair returns to Kerry The Irish Ford Fair will return to Kerry this coming September. Marking its second year, the Irish Ford Fair was founded last year by Ballyheigue-based rally and classic car enthusiast, Ray Stack. “I have spent that last eight or nine months listening to people tell me how good the first one was and asking when is the next one,” Ray told the Killarney Advertiser. “Everyone wanted to know when was I going to start planning the next one, so here we are.” This year’s event, which will be based at the Banna Beach Hotel and will run on September 7 and 8, will celebrate 50 years of the Ford Capri and organisers are looking for 50 examples of the iconic sports car to mark the occasion. “I am working with the Irish Capri
Owners Club and we are going to do everything in our power to have 50 Capris here and celebrate the Irish and UK anniversary at the Banna Beach Hotel,” he added. One of the highlights of last year’s fair was the 90km road run along the north Kerry section of the Wild Atlantic Way and this will be repeated on the Saturday. “The secretary of one of the big Ford clubs told me that they go on 14 or 15 runs every year but they never saw anything as breath-taking as the scenery along Kerry Head,” said Stack. “Not everyone took part in the run so we want to give those who missed it another chance to have a look themselves.” More details on the event will be released in coming weeks.
The event raises money for the local branch of the Irish Kidney Association and has become a welcome addition to the Ireland BikeFest Killarney, which runs over the entire Bank Holiday weekend. New for this year is that the Hondas will join the main BikeFest parade which runs through the town at 11am on Sunday morning, before setting off around
the Ring of Kerry. “Anybody with a Honda 50, 70, 90, a Vespa or a Moped, who would like to participate, dust them down and join us for what promises to be a grand day, supporting a great charity, the Irish Kidney Association Kerry Branch, raising much needed awareness for organ donation,” said local organiser Teresa Looney. The Honda 50 group will stop at Waterville for lunch where they will be meet by Joe McGill of Radio Kerry and the Walsh family. Two-year-old Cialan Walsh is waiting to go on dialysis.

Cannonball retro road-trip coming to Kerry An exciting new road run based on the legendary 1970s move ‘The Cannonball Run’, and open exclusively for cars manufactured between 1960 and 1999, is coming to Kerry in July. For the first time, Cannonball Ireland is hosting a Retro Cannonball Run after previously hosting similar events for modern supercars each September.
The retro run will start in Kinsale on July 12, and takes in Healy Pass, Kenmare, Molls Gap, Inch Beach, Dingle, Slea Head, Conor Pass, and will finish at Bun-

ratty Castle in County Clare, on July 13. “The all new Retro Cannonball Classic Run featuring cars from the ‘60s, ‘70s, ‘80s and early ‘90s takes us back to our roots when the mad-cap Cannonball Movie was made,” said Cannonball Ireland founder Alan Bannon. “We are going all out retro and welcoming cars from this golden era to take in stunning drives and world-famous rally routes. Classic runs are a longstanding
tradition steeped in nostalgia and pop culture and we want to add our own Cannonball twist to make this a truly unforgettable experience for both drivers and spectators.” Cannonball Ireland is an established event management company and since 2008 has raised over €1 million for Irish charities. The modern event attracts over 190,000 spectators every September.

Excitement reaches all-time low ahead of Kerry’s 2019 Munster football championship opener
Championship season is upon us. Well, sort of. While this weekend technically signals the start of Kerry’s latest All-Ireland tilt, it has become nigh on impossible for the average supporter to get excited about the Munster Senior Football Championship. The competition has been won by just three teams since 1935, Clare in 1992 the one earth-shattering anomaly over that mind-numbingly predictable 83year period. Kerry and Cork have won the rest and the latter’s recent demise has made the outcome even more inevitable. The Kingdom haven’t been defeated in Munster since 2012 and Peter Keane’s charges can secure the county’s seventh consecutive title with victory in this year’s final on June 22. Clare have stood between Kerry and a Munster final in five of the last six seasons but they have been fairly soundly beaten every time, perhaps most notably this time last year when they conceded 0-32 en route to a humbling 22-point defeat in Killarney. If the Banner County are better equipped to cause a shock this time out they’re doing a fine job of hiding it. They just about avoided relegation to Division 3 of the National League and their victory over Waterford in the Munster quarter-final was about as underwhelming as any victory can be. Clare failed to register a single score in the last 32 minutes of that game, eventually hanging on for a forgettable 0-9 to 0-8 win. Without putting too fine a point on it, it’s unlikely that Colm Collins’ team will be brimming with confidence heading into this particular showdown with Kerry. It’s pretty much a foregone conclusion and the bookies agree: the reigning
champions are 1/80 to prevail in Cusack Park tomorrow night. Collins summed the whole thing up earlier this year when he was asked by the Clare Champion about the excitement of the championship. “The excitement of the Munster championship,” he laughed. “I've a pain in my face talking about this. It's ridiculous.” He then went on to suggest an alternative championship structure that would not include the provincials. We hear you, Colm. So what’s the point of this game, or, indeed, the Munster SFC as a whole? In truth, there isn’t any and we can only hope that the newly formed Fixtures Review Committee find it in their hearts to scrap the provincial championships altogether and finally put us all out of our misery. Football fans outside of Ulster are largely apathetic towards the provincial championships and that is likely to be reflected in tomorrow’s attendance, especially with the Champions League final between Tottenham and Liverpool taking place at the slightly later time of 8pm. But look, we might as well preview our championship opener regardless.
MOMENTUM
Kerry’s impressive National League run seems like a really long time ago. That’s probably because it was a really long time ago. Nine weeks have passed since that final defeat to Mayo and it really
feels as though we’re starting all over again from scratch. And it’s not as though Peter Keane’s men can start to build a whole pile of momentum now, regardless of how tomorrow’s game goes. There will be a three-week lay-off before the Munster final, where they will face Cork (who were recently relegated to Division 3 of the National League) or Limerick (who finished second last in Division 4). After that there will be another threeweek lay-off before we get down to the real business of the Super 8s. All things considered, Kerry’s games in Munster are little more than glorified warm-ups, although Peter Keane is still likely to field his strongest team (or a version thereof) in both. As always the No. 1 jersey is still up for grabs but Rathmore’s Shane Ryan appears to be in pole position having started between the sticks for most of the league. Brian Kelly of Legion, who played very well for his club in April, is a reliable alternative. Shane Murphy, meanwhile, is currently out of the picture. Some journalists seem to be under the impression that the Dr Crokes netminder, who missed the league campaign due to club commitments, “opted out” of the Kerry setup but it’s my understanding that he was informed by management that he was surplus to requirements - for this year at least. Out the field, Paul Murphy and Tom O’Sullivan were ever-present throughout the spring and should retain their places, as should versatile Firies man Jack Sherwood. Sherwood has been tried out at centre back in recent challenge matches so it’s unclear whether or not he will feature there or at full back, but his performances in the league cer-
tainly merit a starting berth. Gavin Crowley showed well towards the end of the league and he and Templenoe clubmate Tadhg Morley are in contention to start, as are corner backs Jason Foley, Brian Ó Beaglaoich and Graham O’Sullivan. Peter Crowley was one of Kerry’s best defenders in the opening phase of the campaign so his terrible, season-ending injury came as a massive blow. Gavin White is close to full fitness following his nasty elbow injury and he is sure to start for Kerry this year, if not on Saturday then certainly in the Munster final and beyond. He has flourished at centre back so far in his career but in light of the team’s struggles at midfield against Mayo, could Peter Keane be sparked into doing something drastic? Some observers, this writer included, have wondered aloud if White might be suited to a role at centre field and the athletic Dr Crokes all-rounder appears to have all the tools to excel at 8 or at 9. When you consider the fact that Kerry have decent cover in the half back line, it’s certainly a move that starts to make sense. If Keane opts to keep White at centre back, then Jack Barry and David Moran will probably be the first choice pairing with Adrian Spillane, Mark Griffin and youngster Diarmuid O’Connor providing cover. All three of those latter candidates got a chance in the league but none of them really made the position their own, though it is probably too early to judge O’Connor in what is his first season at senior. The forward division appears to be more cut and dry. Dara Moynihan, Seán O’Shea, Stephen O’Brien, David Clifford and Paul Geaney are all expected to start and James O’Donoghue’s excel-
SPORT
31.05.2019 lent form in the Club Championship makes him the obvious choice for the remaining corner forward spot. Two Kerins O’Rahilly’s men, Gavin O’Brien and Tommy Walsh, had very good leagues so both will be there or thereabouts and you would expect both to be utilised at various points throughout the summer months. Dr Crokes half forward Micheál Burns will also be hoping to force his way back into the starting fifteen, although he will have a fight on his hands if he is to wrest the No. 10 jersey away from his cousin, Dara Moynihan. Looking at the bench, everyone in training at the moment will naturally be
desperate to make the 26-man matchday squad and from a hyper-local perspective it will be interesting to see if newcomers Danny Sheahan (Legion) and Liam Kearney (Spa) get a look-in. Sheahan, a sticky, tough-tackling defender, offers something different to what Kerry already have in that department while Kearney has returned to form at club level after a frustrating and extended spell on the treatment table. If either are in Keane’s long-term championship plans, this weekend might be his best opportunity to try them out. VERDICT: Kerry by nine.

Silence on the sidelines | By Adam Moynihan
Kerry GAA ask parents to stop shouting at kids “One parent is yelling ‘shoot it’ – that’s usually the player’s parent. One parent is yelling ‘pass the ball’ – that’s usually someone else’s parent who wants the kid to pass the ball to their son. Another is saying ‘dribble it’. So who’s the kid supposed to listen to?” Kevin Eastman is a top collegiate and professional basketball coach who was an assistant at the Boston Celtics when they won the NBA Championships back in 2008. Eastman once conducted an experiment with a young AAU team that involved placing a player at midcourt and covering his eyes with a blindfold. He then asked all of the players’ parents who were in attendance to direct the young man on how to get to the basket and make a shot. Unsurprisingly, it didn’t go well. “A couple of them were yelling, ‘go right, go right!’ Two others were going, ‘left, left!’ The other was saying, ‘turn around!’ All of a sudden, the kid was so confused that he was nowhere near the basket,” Eastman explains in a video for the Positive Coaching Alliance. “Half-way there I told him to stop and I said (to the parents), ‘this is what they’re hearing’.” In recent years, the issue of over-zealous parents making a nuisance of themselves at sporting events has become a major talking point globally and Ireland is no exception. Anyone who regularly attends underage football games in this part of the world can tell illuminating tales of mothers and fathers who are guilty not only of over-instruction but also of directing abuse at coaches, referees and even players, at every age group from U10s right up to minor. In fact, the problem has become so
severe in the GAA that administrators have encouraged the implementation of Silent Sidelines in various juvenile competitions right across the country. The terms of the innovative Silent Sideline initiative stipulate that each team nominates one lead coach. That lead coach is the only person who can interact with the children once the game begins, which means that parents and spectators must refrain from communicating with the players throughout. Applause and positive feedback for scores and good play is permitted, but in general shouting is discouraged. Two Silent Sideline signs, similar to the ‘quiet please’ signs seen at major golf tournaments, are held up by adults throughout the match. Earlier this month, the Kerry County Board and Coiste na nÓg introduced the practice for U12 County League games, with all participating clubs asked to co-operate. As well as helping to retain and attract more referees (who are less likely to receive abuse from angry parents), the initiative also encourages kids to think for themselves when they’re out on the pitch. Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser, Killarney Legion U12 coach Donal O’Leary says the Silent Sideline has worked very well so far. “I’ve noticed that the kids are feeling more like it’s their game rather than the coach’s or mom and dad’s,” he said. “Parents are well-intentioned 99% of
31.05.2019 the time but I think this is just an educational thing. You think you’re doing the right thing by saying, ‘go on Johnny, kick it!’ but you’re actually better off letting the children make their own mistakes and learn from them. “It’ll also help to change the culture in our game, where it’s acceptable to basically say what you want on the sideline. It’s a good initiative all around and it’s definitely something we believe in.”
IN-GAME COACHING
Coach Eastman isn’t the only expert to have questioned the practice of (and logic behind) shouting instructions at players during games. Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has said that coaching players during games is difficult, even for him. “I would like to have a timeout like basketball but that can’t happen. I think managers move a lot (on the sideline) and make a lot of gestures, but it’s more to release adrenaline or pressure, because the players don’t understand too much what we are saying.” If one of the best coaches in the world finds it hard to give meaningful instructions to his players once a game kicks off, what hope does an unqualified (in sporting terms) parent of an 11-year-old Gaelic footballer have? Eastman has also spoken of the role he played at his own son’s high school basketball games. Fellow parents often asked why this elite level coach wasn’t telling his child what to do when he was out on the floor. “The answer is simple,” Eastman said. “I’m a parent, not a coach. I’ll clap for Jake but I very seldom even say ‘good shot’ or anything like that, because for that time period I’m the dad, not a coach. His coach is his coach.” Whatever about the questionable rationale of shouting at children when they’re playing sport, one also has to consider the destructive and long-term impact negative feedback can have on a young person. One simple, throwaway comment today can affect someone’s self-esteem for years. If we’re not careful with our words, we run the risk of pushing youngsters away from sport altogether and, far worse than that, leaving them with emotional scars that last for years, far away from the courts and the playing fields. In that regard, Kerry GAA’s Silent Sideline project certainly appears to be a step in the right direction.

Celtic and Castleisland must do it all again PREMIER A LEAGUE FINAL __________________________________________________________________

MOUNTHAWK PARK (TRALEE)
Killarney Celtic and Castleisland must do it all again after Sunday’s hotly-anticipated league final clash at Mounthawk Park in Tralee ended in a tense 1-1 draw. | By Adam Moynihan Celtic were strong favourites heading into this decider but there appeared to be an upset on the cards when Tommy Feehan gave Island the lead just before
half-time. The Killarney side got a foothold in the game just three minutes into the second half when Ryan Kelliher levelled matters with a header. Substitute Podge O’Connor, who had
lined out for the Legion seniors earlier in the day, went close to grabbing a winner late on but ultimately neither side could break the deadlock. This is the second time in three seasons the Premier A final has gone to a replay. Killarney Celtic were defeated 1-0 by fierce rivals Killarney Athletic in a rematch in 2017 but the Hoops got revenge by defeating the Blues in the 2018 cup final before regaining the league title by beating Dingle Bay Rovers in the final. Celtic have already clinched this year’s Greyhound Bar KO Cup by beating Tralee Dynamos 5-0 so their quest for back-to-back league and cup doubles is still on track ahead of today’s mouth-watering league final replay in Tralee. Whenever the favourites rescue the tie and force a replay, there is often a sense that the underdogs have missed their opportunity but Castleisland have given Celtic plenty of problems this season and they will certainly take heart from their performance last weekend. From Celtic’s perspective, they will be grateful for the second chance and manager Brian Spillane will be hoping his side can put in a performance this evening that will justify that prematch favourites tag. The Hoops will be buoyed by the return of star striker Stephen McCarthy who was unavailable for the drawn game. The replay must finish on the night so if the teams remain level after a second 90 minutes, extra time and penalties will be required. Killarney man to marshal “most dangerous race in the world” A Killarney man is volunteering on the legendary Isle of Man TT motorcycle racing festival this week. | By Sean Moriarty Like all motorsport events, they just could not happen without the help and support from the army of volunteer marshals who give their time freely to keep competitors and spectators safe. The annual Isle of Man TT Races is where the best road racers in the world pit their skills against the most famous 37.73 miles of public roads tarmac in motorcycle sport. First held in 1907 the two-week long festival is considered the most dangerous motor race in the world. This year's races run from June 1-7
(practice sessions have been taking place this week) and hundreds of volunteer marshals, organised by IOM TT Marshals Association, from all over the world, have been working from early morning to late evening to keep to show going. Among them is Dalton’s Avenue man Eoin O’Leary. “I have been coming here as a spectator for the last four or five years but I wanted to get more involved. I don’t think I will ever get the chance to race here so wanted to do something to help the event along,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. Household names likes Michael Dun-

lop record speeds in excessive of over 200mph on closed public roads. “This is the Mount Everest of motorsport. There is nothing faster or more dangerous out there. If this place doesn’t excite you then you’re not alive,” he added. “I’m here as a trainee but they look after us well. I hope to do a proper training course to become a sector marshal and look after a whole area. It’s a different level, I have marshalled on local rallies but here you’d need to know how to guide a rescue helicopter into land and I really want to do that training course too.” Today, Friday, is the final day of qualifying, with the racing proper set to

The Irish challenge is led by the Tyco BMW Motorrad of Michael Dunlop - a triple Race winner last year – who takes his familiar starting position at six.

The South Kerry Hurling team who will be participating in Féile na nGael.
Féile na nGael 2019 is coming to Killarney
For the first time in Kerry hurling and camogie history, the John West Féile na nGael will be hosted here in Kerry, in conjunction with our near neighbours in Cork. Kerry have 12 hurling and four camogie clubs hosting and competing in the All-Ireland tournament which will be setting the county alight with the clash of the ash from June 7-9. Local clubs Killarney Camogie and South Kerry Hurling have put in huge efforts over the past four months to generate the necessary funds required to host and participate in Féile. Local schools were called upon to hold jersey days and bag packing took place in Dunnes Stores, while a fun quiz night, several flag days and bucket collections were also held. The clubs are extremely grate-
ful to the schools, local businesses and local communities who have contributed to this memorable weekend. Both clubs have a big community to pool from with South Kerry being an amalgamation St Pat’s East Kerry, Rathmore and Dr Crokes whilst Killarney Camogie Club is made up of players from Glenflesk, Gneeveguilla, Spa, Fossa, Kilcummin, Laune Rangers, Legion, Rathmore and Dr Crokes. For the two clubs, their home games will take place in Spa GAA who have generously offered their facilities for the weekend. Here, South Kerry will host Cumann Micheál Breathnach from Galway and Killarney will host Four Roads Camogie Club from Roscommon. With only a week to go, the anticipation is steadily building. K illarney interest in Sunday's Circuit of Munster Rally
Rally action this weekend centres on the revamped Lyons of Limerick Circuit of Munster Rally which moves to a new base and new stage locations after a long period in West Limerick. The rally is a counting round of both the Triton Showers National Rally Championship and the locally sponsored Top Part West Coast Rally Championship. The leading all Killarney crew on Sunday’s rally is father and son team Charlie and Johnny Hickey in their Ford Es-
cort, although they are not registered for either championship. Kenmare’s Vincent O’Shea and Eoin O’Donoghue are currently second in class 14 in the Top Part West Coast standings in their unusual BMW M1. They could leave Limerick on Sunday evening as class leaders depending on how they fare against Donegal's Stuart Darcy and JJ Cremin in their Escort. New Yorker Paul Rowley makes one of his many motorsport trips home and will contest the rally in a Ford Fiesta R5 with Glenflesk co-driver Brian Doherty alongside.
Mulready, is just as excited as the players. “It is very exciting to be hosting Féile na nGael for the first time in Kerry this year. Our players have been preparing very well in training and during the U14 League, and are very excited about participating in Féile na nGael 2019. “The South Kerry Hurling team had a great experience at Féile last year in Claremorris, where the team, mentors and families were shown great hospitality. We hope to reciprocate this year to our visiting team CLG Michéal Breathnach of Galway, to whom we extend a huge Céad Míle Failte to Kerry. We are looking forward to a great weekend.” Paul O’Brien, one of the Killarney Camogie Club’s coaches, was singing from the same hymn sheet.

Killarney and District Motor Club marshals available for the Circuit of Mun-
“This will be Killarney Camogie Club's second time in two years playing in Féile na nGael and our first ever year hosting. For a small club it has been a big ask to get everything organised and to raise the funds needed to be able to show our hospitality to the clubs staying in Killarney this time around. “A huge amount of credit goes to the committee and the parents that have helped throughout the year to get to this stage. Now it will be up to our U14 girls to get out there on the pitch and show that Killarney can play and compete in a national camogie competition and hopefully win our division. “It’ll be a great experience for the girls and lots fun to play the best field game at such a high level. Best of luck to our Killarney girls.” Both clubs would like to extend an invitation to all hurling and camogie fans to come down to Spa GAA pitch on Friday, June 7 from 5.30-8pm and Saturday, June 8 at 10am and enjoy the skill and competition on display. If any business or kind-hearted soul is interested in giving a helping hand by donating in any fashion (home baking always welcome), please do not hesitate to contact the clubs on 087 9205924.

All-Ireland glory for Mid Kerry handballer | By Con Dennehy It was aces high in Kerry this week following the phenomenal success of Kerry player Jack O’Shea at the All-Ireland Junior Hardball championship in Ballymacelligott. Kerry has produced many top class handballers who have graced the national and international stage over the past number of decades but few have had the charisma, years of selfless dedication and sheer class of O’Shea from Glenbeigh Handball Club.
On Sunday last he put all these traits on the line and was rewarded when defeated David Walsh (Cork) in the All-Ireland Hardball final. “For me it was the honour of bringing an All Ireland title to Glenbeigh Handball Club,” O’Shea said. “It was important for the future of the sport in the area and something our younger players can aspire too. We have a great club and a wonderful community who have supported all the players over the past number of years. This title is dedicated to all of them.”
