PAGE SIX “In A Town Like Killarney, Betting Is Rampant” Words: Adam Moynihan
In an interview on RTÉ Radio One last Sunday, President Michael D Higgins said he was in favour of banning the promotion of betting in sports. “I’m very concerned about gambling for example, which if I had my way, I wouldn’t have advertising of any access to gambling platforms in sport at all,” he said. “I really worry when I read cases of people who have come through [gambling problems]. “I visited the Hope House in Mayo recently who have been a great assistance to some people who have got over what is, hopefully, a terrible temporary problem. I think in a way we should protect our sports by keeping them free from this kind of stuff.” A couple of days later, a Kerry councillor admitted that he has been battling a gambling addiction. John Francis Flynn from Killorglin opened up about his betting and alcohol problems this week in the hope that others might learn from his mistakes. A number of high profile athletes have done the same in recent years but despite all these case samples highlighting the perils of gambling, and all these pleas for reform, the situation in this country seems to be getting worse, not better. Online gambling has made it so easy to get sucked in and once you’re in, it can be difficult to get back out. Sports and betting are intrinsi-
cally linked and being involved in sports my whole life, gambling is something that’s always been there in the background. And in Killarney, which is such a sports mad town, betting, and talking about betting, is rampant. “Who are the favourites?” is a question I’ve heard asked, and asked myself, in the build up to countless games down through the years. From a young age there’s an understanding that the bookies are a reliable source of information when it comes to analysing sport (which perhaps shows how foolish we are in thinking that we can beat them). I wouldn’t be a big gambler myself but I do enjoy the odd bet on a soccer or football game. My betting would be sporadic and the sums involved small. It can add another element of excitement to the occasion and it’s nice when you get it right but, realistically, the house always wins eventually. Casual gambling like that might not seem like a big deal but, as with anything, some people get hooked. A fiver on a soccer accumulator can quickly turn into 20, which can turn into 50, and next thing you know you’re talking about hundreds or even thousands of euro. From the outside it’s
easy to say, “Jesus, that’s mad money,” but it’s like telling a fella he’s drinking too much. It’s a genuine problem and it’s not something that’s easily fixed. There is definitely a culture of betting in Ireland and there are people suffering as a result. Ads for betting sites are everywhere: TV, online, on billboards and on jerseys... Everywhere you turn you’re being urged to put on a bet. This normalisation of something so problematic is wrong in my eyes. How can you tell a young person to avoid gambling when their favourite player is running around with a betting company plastered across his shirt? We’ve reached the stage where up to the minute prices are displayed on electronic
advertising hoardings at Premier League games. Even if you have no interest whatsoever ever in gambling, you can’t get away from it. For some people all it takes is one bet to set the wheels in motion. And for those who already gamble heavily, the last thing they need is further invitation to put on a bet. Gambling advertising isn’t as highly regulated as alcohol and tobacco advertising but the president is right, it should be. The effects of smoking and drinking might be more conspicuous but gambling addictions can be just as harmful. I don’t think removing ads from sporting events is the silver bullet but it would be a step in the right direction.
Has Killarney’s Traffic Problem Reached Breaking Point? Killarney has had a lingering problem with traffic congestion for years but with the heightened numbers of tourists visiting the town this summer, the problem seems to have intensified. Long lines of traffic can be seen every day on many routes in and out of town, with problem areas like the Lewis Road and Mission Road particularly drawing the ire of locals. I can’t remember hearing so many people complaining about traffic in all my years living here, and the worrying thing is there seems to be no end in sight. The TEIR 1 report that was published earlier in the year laid the problem out in black and white. The tourists surveyed highlighted the interlinked issues of traffic congestion, parking and infrastructure as their key
recommendations to improve the town. The report also predicted a 30% increase in tourism by 2025. It’s clear that there’s already a problem with traffic in Killarney. If no action is taken, imagine what it will be like down the line with 30% more visitors in the town… At the moment the only apparent fix on the cards is the proposed Lissivigeen to Farranfore bypass, but any discussions on that have been shelved until at least 2022. We contacted the council this week to ask if there are any other solutions on the horizon and we await their response. For more on Killarney’s ongoing traffic problems, check out Anne Lucey’s opinion piece on page 14.

“The McShains Loved Killarney… They Should Have Been Honoured Long Ago” E V I S U L C X E Kil

Who Were The McShains?
Advertiser ney lar
John McShain, a building contractor from Philadelphia known as “The Man Who Built Washington”, initially came to own Killarney House as part of a syndicate in 1957 but within a couple of years he had bought out his partners. He also purchased a huge section of Killarney, including the Demesne, Ross Castle and Innisfallen Island. In 1971, he gave it all back to the state for free. In 1978, he sold Killarney House to the state for a nominal fee on the condition that he and his wife could reside at the mansion until their death. John died in 1989 and Mary died in 1998. Their only child, Pauline, joined the Convent of the Holy Child Jesus in Pennsylvania in 1946. She turned 90 two weeks ago.
Above: Caretaker Harry O’Donoghue outside Killarney House. Right: John McShain and his wife, Mary.
The caretaker who has looked after Killarney House & Gardens since 1986 and knew the McShains personally has thrown his weight behind the Killarney Advertiser’s McShain Campaign, insisting that the generous American couple should have been honoured years ago. Harry O’Donoghue started working for John and Mary McShain as a 22-year-old in 1986, shortly after the pair permanently relocated to the Killarney holiday home they had owned since 1959. Before that they would spend six months of the year here in Killarney and six months in Arizona. With regards to the Killarney Advertiser’s campaign, Harry says there was ample opportunity to memorialise the McShains in the past but the council, for whatever reason, failed to act. “Years ago when the council got the land for Mission Road off the McShains, I pleaded with them to name it the McShain Road,” the popular caretaker explains. “They turned a blind eye to it. “It’s a real pity that nothing is called after them. It’s shocking, really. There’s only one place in Killarney that I know of that’s named after them: the McShain
Suite in the Plaza Hotel. “It would be nice if the council erected a statue outside on the Mission Road or even at the Golden Gates. All these years later, they still haven’t recognised what the McShains did for them. They got everything for nothing.” Harry kindly gave me a tour of Killarney House this week and as well as giving me a fascinating insight into the history of the famous Killarney landmark, he was quick to point out how fond John and Mary were of the town, and how fond the town was of them. “They loved Killarney - they called it a ‘gem’. Peace and quite. That’s what they wanted and that’s what they got. They were very nice people and they were very good to all of us, especially my parents. Everyone locally had good time for them. John would take his pony and trap out around Ross Island and people loved to see him.” Harry and his family have a long and storied history with Killarney House. He took over the caretaker role
from his late father Paddy and his grandfather, Tim, was a valet to the last Earl of Kenmare, Lord Castlerosse. Castlerosse was shot in the trenches during World War I and Tim, who was serving alongside him, saved his life. Thereafter the Anglo-Irish nobleman (real name Valentine Brown) took the O’Donoghue family under his wing and provided them with jobs all over Europe. The loyal caretaker is just the latest in a string of local people who have voiced their dismay that John and Mary McShain are yet to be appropriately memorialised by the town of Killarney. Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser last week, Mayor John Sheahan, the Chamber President Paul O’Neill, TD Michael Healy-Rae and the General Manager of Killarney House & Gardens Pat Dawson all backed the idea of recognising the McShains in some way. The people of Killarney also seem to be overwhelmingly in favour of honouring the altruistic couple. What do you think? Should Mary and John McShain be recognised for what they did for Killarney? What would be the most appropriate way of honouring them? Let us know by emailing newsdesk@killarneyadvertiser.ie.

TOWNTALK Fears For Local Economy As Liebherr Staff Put On Three-Day Week
Staff at the Liebherr Container Crane factory in Fossa have been put on three-day weeks amid concerns that cutbacks at one of the south west’s biggest employers could have a knock-on effect on the economy of the region. The reduced week is expected to be in place from Monday, September 3 until the end of the year. Employees learned of the news last week before their annual two-week break. The measure has been put in place to save jobs at the company; 27 people had already been let go and there were fears that a further 180 could be sacked.
The majority of staff will be affected by the move, including office and manufacturing staff. A small number of employees have been transferred to other Liebherr factories in Southampton and Germany. A number of local businesses who do haulage and subcontracting work for Liebherr may also be affected by the cut-backs, and reduced wages for employees may adversely affect the local economy. Dr Hans Liebherr opened his Killarney operation in 1958 and since then the company has been a reliable and valued source of employment for the people of Killarney and the surrounding parishes. Locals hope
Health
that the current set back is temporary and the global powerhouse can bounce back and prosper for many years to come. The Liebherr family company owns three five-star hotels in the area and in the past decade alone some €100 million has been put into major upgrading of the Hotel Europe and the Dunloe Castle. It has also invested heavily in equipment, technology automation, training and facilities at the crane factory. Cranes from the Killarney plant go all over the world via the port of Fenit.
No Response From HSE On Killarney Beds Suggestion Words: Adam Moynihan I have a good one for you. In light of last week’s article on Donie Doody (SIPTU’s Branch Organiser for Kerry Hospitals) and his suggestion to utilise Killarney’s vacant hospital beds to alleviate pressure on University Hospital Kerry, I contacted the HSE for an official comment. They responded, fairly quickly in fairness to them, telling me to contact a named PR firm, and they provided a number to call. So I called and left a message outlining my question. I promptly received a response. “That’s a question for the HSE.” I’ll be honest with you, I was confused. Long story short, I wasn’t able to get a comment from the HSE and I spoke to Donie Doody yesterday and he said he hadn’t received an official response from anyone either (although the Minister for Health did at least acknowledge receipt of his statement). He also restated his belief that Killarney’s
empty beds should be used to take pressure of Tralee. He had never seen so many unused beds in Killarney in his life, he said. There are currently 30 vacant hospital beds in the town. Yesterday, there were 15 people waiting on trolleys at University Hospital Kerry. It seems like a common sense solution to a very serious and pressing issue and it will be interesting to see what the HSE and the Department of Health have to say for themselves (if anyone can actually manage to track them down).

New Children’s Novel Tells The Story Of Hugh O’Flaherty The Hugh O’Flaherty Memorial Society welcomes a new novel based on the Monsignor’s life story - for the younger reader – titled “Leo’s War”. Its author Patricia Murphy has written many historically based books for the young reader, including the best-selling “Molly’s Diary” dealing with the 1916 Rising. Jerry O’Grady of the Hugh O’Flaherty Memorial Society said: “We are absolutely delighted to see the publication of this book aimed at the younger reader. The author Patricia Murphy credits Colm O’Súilleabháin (Principal of The Mon), with suggesting the book. Three of her nephews had attended The Mon and when Patricia visited the school a couple of years ago to talk to the 6th class, Principal Colm suggested she might next take on the challenge of writing about their ‘Mon Hero’, Hugh O’Flaherty. Patricia quietly took up Colm’s challenge, culminating in the publication of this exciting new novel for 9-12-year olds.” As Pope Francis visits Dublin this August 2018, Poolbeg Press is delighted to an-
nounce the publication of Leo’s War by bestselling author Patricia Murphy, based on the real-life exploits of the courageous Irish priest known as “The Vatican Pimpernel”, in World War 2. Leo’s War is based on the astonishing true story of Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty, the Irish Oscar Schindler who saved over 6,500 lives during the German occupation in Rome during the Second World War. Told through the eyes of a 12-year-old boy it is a dramatic rollercoaster of extraordinary human courage against the darkest evil by the bestselling author of Molly’s Diary. “Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty is one of Ireland’s greatest humanitarians, honoured by The United States, Britain, Israel and Italy after the war, yet he is hardly a household name,” said publisher Paula Campbell. “Poolbeg is thrilled to bring his story to a new generation of children. And it’s a nail-biting page-turner full of dramatic events that will have readers enthralled.”

Columnist Anne Lucey gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry and beyond
Gardaí On Point Would Help Our Traffic Problem The Department of Transport and Tourism (and Sport) is the name, is it not? Killarney is the tourist capital of Ireland is it not? 22 minutes between Woodlawn Cross and the Lidl roundabout on Wednesday morning last before 10am; 10 minutes from the Cahernane along the Golden Mile to the top of Ross Road on Tuesday evening at 5.40pm; 30 minutes to get from the Fossa side through Mission Road onto the Muckross Road last week. Two whole minutes stopped at Ross Road junction because the lights would not turn green and there wasn’t a cat moving, up or down Ross Road, not to mind a horse. Because this wasn’t race week. There were gardaí on point duty race week and the traffic moved, largely. At a recent JPC meeting in Tralee, attended by top gardaí, Cllr Donal Grady called for gardaí to be on point duty at the busiest spots during the season in Killarney and he seemed to get a favourable response. But aside from the week of the races, I haven’t seen gardaí on point duty in Killarney. Have you? Gardaí on point duty would make sense because of the log jam on Ross Road which, though highlighted a number of times, still has not been resolved. A simple tweaking of the traffic lights might do it. But of course, like putting a left turn only sign at the Lewis Road junction, this will surely take a deputation of
councillors and management to Dublin to the aptly named Minister Ross! We won’t mention the thousands of euro spent by the local authority on a traffic study two years ago. I timed the Ross hold up last Wednesday. All traffic was stuck at the traffic lights there for two minutes. Nothing moved. Nothing. Not a vehicle up or down
Ross Road or on any road. A garda on point duty would have moved things along. Then there is the prize-worthy engineering feat that is the Port Road/Mission Road/New Street Junction with pedestrian crossing thrown in and buses and SUVs parked right on the turn. Acrobats have better a chance of crossing the road there. Again gardaí needed to pick up the slack from the council. Now the final thing is the jaunting cars. Everyone is held up on the Mission Road and the top of Ross Road while jarveys come and go from the Demesne and Ross Castle. But the jarveys themselves have offered a solution, privately and publicly through this column. The jarveys are seeking direct access to the park from their stand. So why isn’t it done? The irony is, just two weeks ago at a private meeting with hotel leaders in Killarney, an Taoiseach Leo told them he believed the combination of tourism and transport in the one ministry was “a better fit” than the previous arts, sport and tourism combination, or even heritage. Well, were Leo caught on the Golden Mile with tourists trying to get out of their accommodation to sit in traffic jams, and nothing moving, he might think again. The tourist industry had got the country out of the slump, Leo also apparently acknowledged. However, it still will not get senior ministry status.
All The Presidential Men So far the presidential race has failed to ignite, for me. There is no one yet to hold a candle to the mischievous, intellectual and good humoured Michael D who has been top class for the past six years. I would die of boredom listening to the worthy Liadh Ni Riada who was given a dry run by Sinn Féin on Marian Finucane last Saturday. Joan Freeman is too nun-like for me and would remind me constantly of sadness and upset. So far it’s all the presidential men in waiting or declared. None of the names so far in the ring will even dent the man I like to call Yoda - from the character small in size but wise and powerful in Star Wars. O’Cuív boxing from the shadows and hanging onto his grandfather’s coat tails for dear life is not what this country needs right now. Then there are the Trump would-bes. But the game could change. Dustin the Turkey may be waiting in the wings! Why not? Dana of All Kinds of Everything got a run. Miriam O’Callaghan would hoover up the votes and immediately there would be ten vacancies in RTÉ where she seems to be the only one on air this summer. And people are imploring our own Seán Kelly to run, according to himself. A lot, too, depends on what dirt, if
any, comes out about the current president. I think the spending of the office will be looked at, especially on travel and hospitality, and I sincerely hope Sabina for her own sake hasn’t bought too many hats for the races! I am certain there is no expensive white wine in the fridge in the Áras! It’s all red lemonade in that house. One potential candidate who would tempt me would be Joe Brolly. His name has been floated by the columnist Cormac Lucey as someone non-partisan who could be supported by Sinn Féin if they had sense. Now Joe would be a contender in my book. Why? Because of the Derryman’s humour, his wit, his hearty laugh, his passion, his use of English, his straight talking and ability to write and talk football, and call out guff and boloney, his knowledge of the law and the little matter of giving his kidney away and taking in a homeless boy; the way he takes on the big boys, the institutions like the GAA. Oh, and he spits badly needed fire about Kerry football at times. If it’s boring, Joe says so. I think Joe would leave even Yoda in the shade. I have that feeling. The
Wheelchair Taxis Irish like a bit of fun and madness in people – providing the base is solid and sincere. And with Joe one feels it is. There is this against him: his northernness. However, I don’t think he will be as narrowly and overly focused on the north as Mary McAleese and her husband. She gave most of her 14 years up and down the Falls Road. It often seemed to me and the country became lop-sided with media, tourist boards and sporting organisations keeling over to pay attention to the six counties. Joe is more southern, he is no narrow nationalist with a guilt torch to burn for the unionists, and I can’t imagine him bothering too much about mending bridges that are beyond repair, or common sense. Cormac Lucey’s suggestion has got little traction so far. However, I was intrigued to see Joe himself get in on the fight on Twitter two days ago, and refreshingly unpresidentially and unprintably brand the deer-hunting enthusiast Gavin Duffy, who says he will appeal to people’s hearts not their intellects! “What a d...” was Brolly’s response. Imagine a president who would tweet what he thinks! Go on Joe!
We are still with transport in Killarney. It is high time to remove the cars from one side of High Street. Not only does the parking spoil the streetscape, it makes crossing the street highly dangerous and people with wheelchairs and prams find the paths very difficult, full of obstacles outside premises and with very little spaces to cross safely or even get between cars. For that matter, how many wheelchair friendly taxis have we in Killarney for our tourists? I put feelers out this week, ringing one very polite company. But no, no wheelchair taxis. If I went down to the stand in College Street I might find one, but this was not certain, they told me. I have been googling and can find only one: Denis McCarthy attached to J O’Callaghan and Sons, who say theirs is the only wheelchair taxi. Denis is very obliging and he thinks he is still the only dedicated, full-time wheelchair taxi in Killarney. If this is the case, it needs to be highlighted. We have tourists, patients in hospitals, apart from residents who need wheelchair taxis and they can’t all be depending on just one taxi. And I will go further, why is every taxi not wheelchair friendly? There is an opportunity here now to grant aid to taxi drivers for London style taxis, me thinks. This is a story I will follow.

NEWS Local Post Offices Reject Credit Union Urges Parents Closure Package

To Shun Moneylenders At Back-To-School Time
Rural
Tuesday was the “deadline day” for 26 post offices across the county but the good news is that many in the Killarney area have confirmed that they will be staying open. An Post offered an exit package to the rural post offices in May of this year and a large number of locals had voiced fears that there would be closures. However, Farranfore, Headford, Beaufort and Kilcummin have all confirmed that they turned down the package and will remain open. It was not clear at time of going to print whether or not Glenflesk, Gneeveguilla or Currow had accepted An Post’s offer. Speaking to Killarney Advertiser, Muiris Healy of Kilcummin Post Office said they saw no valid reason to close their doors. “We’re busy,” he said. “We offer a great service to the community and it would be a massive inconvenience to our customers if we shut down. We were
approached back in May but we were never going to close. This post office has been here since 1847 and it has been in my family for three generations. “We have a shop next door and the two businesses depend on each other.” Opponents to An Post’s measures say the effects of closing rural post offices will be devastating.
Casual, High Quality Dining At The Tan Yard
The Tan Yard in Killarney offers a casual, high quality dining experience in an interior setting inspired by the historical tan yards of Killarney, where hides of livestock where tanned to produce leather. Their wonderful menu features delicious steaks and burgers from the grill to fresh fish, salads and ‘favourites’, all served from 5–9.30pm from Monday to Sunday. A children’s menu is also available. Under the guidance of Peter Guban, Executive Chef of the Killarney Plaza Hotel, and Head Chef of The Tan Yard and Café du Parc Diarmuid Murphy, The Tan Yard pride themselves on creating dishes sourcing the freshest ingredients of the highest quality. Diarmuid, a native of Killarney, has
worked as a Head Chef and Executive Chef all over the world over the past 20 years, including in places as exotic as Texas, Belize and the Caribbean. He returned to his hometown a year ago to join the team at Café du Parc. Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser, the Head Chef said there’s something for everyone at The Tan Yard. “We spent a month testing our menu and the focus was really on figuring out what the market wants,” he said. “We have a wide selection of specialities and it’s all about casual but quality dining. We’re hoping to build on the success of the Café du Parc and the reaction so far has been very positive.” Be sure to check out The Tan Yard, Killarney’s newest restaurant. You won’t leave disappointed!
A new, national survey has identified a rise in the number of parents in debt due to back-to-school related costs. Well over a third of parents in Ireland (36%) now say they are getting into debt trying to cope with costs at back-toschool time. This compares with 29% who reported being in debt last year. The worrying findings were revealed in the study commissioned by the Irish League of Credit Unions. More than two thirds of parents in the study also said that they found back-to-school costs a financial burden. Nearly half (46%) said meeting costs was their biggest back-toschool related worry. Close to one third of parents said they would be forced to deny their children certain school items this year because they could not afford them. Extracurricular activities and new school shoes were amongst the items to be cut from the budget this year. Reacting to the findings, Helen Courtney Power, Business Development Officer of Killarney Credit Union said that the credit union is all too aware of the struggle for parents this time of year. “We do see parents approaching us around this time of year requesting assistance with either budgeting and saving for the back-to-school spend, or with taking out a loan to see them through. It’s understandable that back-to-school costs are seen as a financial burden for so many when parents are paying out €999 for every primary school child, and over €1,300 for every secondary school child in their house-
hold. At XX Credit Union, we offer a special Back to School loan with an affordable APR rate of 6.2%*. The loan is typically approved within 48 hours and there are no hidden transaction fees or charges. As always, we are happy to work with parents to structure repayments in a way that suits their individual circumstances.” Of concern for the Credit Union was the finding that, of those parents who said they were getting into debt, more than a quarter (27%) said they had turned to a moneylender in an effort to cope with back-to-school costs. This was a noticeable increase on the 20% last year who had opted for a moneylender. Commenting on this finding, Helen said, “I would really encourage these parents to reconsider approaching a moneylender, some of whom charge APR rates as high as 188%**. This can lead to a recurring cycle of unnecessary debt and panic borrowing. We offer a service called the Personal Micro-Credit Scheme or ‘It Makes Sense’ which was specifically designed to assist social welfare recipients who feel they have no option but to borrow from a moneylender. Our welcoming staff are always onhand to answer any queries in relation to this loan. * For a €1,000 1 year variable interest rate loan with 12 monthly repayments of €86, an interest Rate of 6%, a representative APR of 6.2%, the total amount payable by the member is €1,032. Information correct as at 31/07/2018. ** Central Bank of Ireland Register of Moneylenders, July 2018.

LAYOFF/SHORT-TIME WORKING Under the Redundancy Payment Acts, 1967-2014, a Layoff situation arises where your Employer is unable to provide work for you but believes this to be a temporary situation and gives you identification of the Layoff before the work finishes. A ShortTime situation arises where, due a reduction in the amount of work to be done, your weekly pay is less than half of your normal weekly pay where your hours worked are reduced to less than half of the normal weekly working hours. This must be a temporary situation and your Employer must notify you before the reduction starts. An Employer should explain to Employees the reason for the Layoff of Short Time working and keep Employees informed of the situation during this time. If an Employer fails to notify you of the Layoff or Short Time working, there could be a claim for a statutory redundancy payment against your Employer. An Employer can lay you off or put you on Short Time if it is in your Contract of Employment or if it is customary practice in your work place. Otherwise your Employer should not lay you off or put you on Short Time without your agreement. However, if you do not agree, this may lead to a redundancy situation. When selecting Employees for Layoff or Short Time working, an Employer should apply the same standard of selection criteria as for redundancy. The criteria should be reasonable and applied in a fair manner. If you are laid off or are on Short
Time working, you may be entitled to job seekers benefit or job seekers allowance. If a Layoff or Short Time situation exists and has continued for four weeks or more or for six weeks in the last thirteen weeks, you may give your Employer notice in writing of your intention to claim redundancy. Unless your Employer gives you a counter notice within seven days of your notice, you may be entitled to redundancy payment provided that you qualify for redundancy. If your Employer gives you a counter notice within the allotted time, it must be to the effect that within four weeks of the date of your claim for redundancy it will be possible to offer you not less than thirteen weeks work without Layoff or Short Time. If you do not wish to claim redundancy but the Layoff or Short Time situation continues, the question will arise as to whether it is a temporary situation. If there is a dispute as to whether the situation is temporary or not, the matter may be referred to the Workplace Relations Commission to make a decision. The above is a discussion piece only and does not purport to be legal advice and should not be relied upon as such. In respect of any specific circumstances, you should consult your solicitor to obtain specific legal advice and Terence F. Fun Activities At Manor West For Tour De Munster
Manor West Shopping Centre and Retail Park will welcome over 100 cyclists from the 18th Annual ‘Tour de Munster’ charity cycle to Tralee on Friday, August 10 from 2-6pm. The four-day cycle takes place from Thursday to Sunday, August 9-12 and will see cycling legend Sean Kelly and over 100 amateur cyclists cycle over 600km around the six counties of Munster, raising funds for Down Syndrome Ireland (DSI) and individual beneficiaries in the process. This will be the second year the tour has used Manor West as its stop off point in Tralee, and Manor West and the DSI Kerry branch have planned a range of fun activities for the afternoon including samba drummers, zumba dancing, face painting, balloon modelling and much more. Speaking about celebrations at Manor West, Derek Rusk, Centre Manager, said, “We are proud to be supporting the Tour de Munster for the second year in a row. It’s a phenomenal event which fundraises for fantastic charities, including DSI, and we are looking forward to giving the cyclists a big Kerry welcome on the 10th. It’s going to be a great family day out so we’re encouraging every-
one in Tralee to come along and support the tour and join in the fun!” The Tour de Munster was established in 2001 by Paul Sheridan who is very much looking forward to another fantastic event. “Each year we are blown away with the dedication of everyone involved in the cycle and so proud of how far the event has come,” he said. “We are thrilled that Manor West are supporting us once again and we’re so impressed with the fantastic welcome Derek and DSI Kerry have planned for the cyclists on the 10th.” This year the charity cycle aims to raise €250,000 for DSI, with funds going towards providing vital services and facilities for people with Down syndrome across Munster. Madeline Rose Doyle from the DSI Kerry Branch said: “We are very grateful to Paul and the Tour de Munster for selecting DSI as their chosen charity because fundraising events like these make a real difference to the lives of people with Down syndrome, as well as their friends and family. We are so thankful for the support from Derek and Manor West for adding to the already fantastic event

Anna Wintour Gives Beyonce Total Control Of September issue
Celeb NEWS r Tyle ell h Mitc
It’s Vogue’s biggest and most influential edition, so important it has it’s own documentary, The September Issue. In an unprecedented move, the style bible’s editor-in-chief Anna Wintour has relinquished control over what is always the year’s most talked about magazine cover - instead putting Beyonce in charge. Beyonce has used her power to give a career boost to 23-year-old black photographer Tyler Mitchell, recruiting him to take her picture. He is the first photographer of color to shoot a Vogue cover. The magazine is 126 years old and first featured color photos on it’s cover in 1932. Along with controlling the magazine cover, Beyonce’s contract also states that she is to select the photos of her inside the magazine. She is also writing her own captions in long form, according to the Huff Post. Mother-of-three Beyonce, 36, has appeared on Vogue’s September issue cover once before, shot by Mario Testino in 2015.

Speaking to People magazine, the Canadian singer’s representative confirmed her widely speculated name while revealing the new parents are resting at home and soaking up the love. ‘The family is back home and are overjoyed with the new addition,’ confirmed Michael’s rep. With the name Visa defined as ‘life’ in Luisana’s native tongue Spanish, the manager also revealed the meaning behind her two middle names. They said Amber was after Michael’s mom Amber Santagà and Betty after Luisana mom Beatriz Lopilato. Born on Wednesday 25th July 2018, Luisana took to social media the following day to share a tender shot of Vida’s hand.

Bird’s 80th annual Carnival Week took place last week at Fair Hill. More fondly known locally as Bird’s Bazaar, the week’s events commenced with their Carnival Dog Show on Monday, July 23. The organiser explained that Carnival Week is Birds’ way of showing their appreciation for the patronage of children and their parents at the annual fun fair. The aim is to encourage children express their various creative skills and talents during the week’s activities. All entrants receive free tickets to enjoy the many exciting attractions at the fun fair during the various evenings. Those judged best in their various categories receive trophies, medals and cash prizes. Sponsors also donated generous prizes for those lucky enough to have won the best overall in their category each evening. Monday’s Carnival Dog Show was sponsored by Matilda’s Pet Shop with top prize going to a springer spaniel named Charlie. White Paws Dog Groomers provided the judges on the night and they selected Charlie as the dog they would most like to take home along with nine other prizes. Tuesday’s inaugural Cake Decorating event was a great success. It was sponsored by the INEC and judged by Mark Doe of Just Cooking cookery school. There were 12 prizes up for grabs and the Best Overall was won by the Caffrey children who collaborated on their creation. Best Girl was won by Annie O’Connell and Best Boy by Ogie Deery. On Wednesday, the very popular Children’s Fancy Dress was limited to children under 12 years of age in order to keep participating numbers manageable. Historically, the winners in this event are usually those that present themselves in homemade costumes and this year was no exception. The event was judged by Yvonne Quill and Cormac Foley who awarded Cliona Coffey of Beaufort top prize for her Ladies Day at the Races costume. Cliona also received the prize generously sponsored by Buddies Soft Play Centre. The
Best Group category was won by Shauna and Michelle McCarthy. The Best Individual Girl was won by Aoife O’Callaghan and Best Individual Boy prize went to Donnacha Kissane. The Children’s Doll Show on Thursday was sponsored by Kennedy’s Pet Farm and judged by Mr Joe Burke and Mrs Yvonne Bird who awarded top prize to Olivia O’Connell from Ballyhar for the Best Individual Doll among the nine other categories from which winners were chosen and prizes awarded. Friday saw a stunning display of talented Irish dancing by the renowned Irwin School of Irish Dancing. Irwin’s students presented a lively and very colourful display of traditional Irish social and performance dance routines. They also filled the floor when they invited audience participation during the evening. To round off the week, Saturday attracted a massive number of budding young artists in three age categories: Under 18 years, Under 12 years and Under 8 years. Competition was fierce and the difficult task of judging fell on Daniel and Tracey Sexton of The Art House along with local professional photographer, Sally MacMonagle. There were over 12 prizes up for grabs with the most coveted prize of all, the Councillor Michael Courtney Perpetual Trophy, being presented by Mr Mike Courtney to Ema Monsur judged as Best Overall. Ema was also presented with substantial prizes sponsored by Tangney’s of Killarney, Sally MacMonagle Photography and an art course sponsored by The Art House. The judges also awarded a huge hamper, sponsored by Daly’s SuperValu, to 1st in the Highly Commended category, which was young 11-year-old Michael O’Brien for his unique Braille Art entry. Bird’s Euroshow Fun Fair would like to thank the Dromhall Hotel, their many generous sponsors, media partners, the many judges and all the staff that worked tirelessly to ensure that everyone thoroughly enjoyed their experience and participation at the 80th annual Carnival Week.

A Weekly Round-Up Of News + Views From Kerry And Around
Ryanair Pilots To Strike Again Next Week Trade union Fórsa has today given notice that directly-employed Irish-based Ryanair pilots will stage a further one-day strike commencing at 1am on 10 August. This will be the fifth one-day strike by these pilots since July 12. They are also expected to strike today. Belgian and Swedish pilots are already striking on August 10, and there are expectations that German and Dutch pilot could also go on strike on the same day. In a statement released this afternoon, Fórsa said: “For over a month, the union has said that industrial action is likely to continue until there is substantial movement on the pilots’ reasonable demands for an agreement on a fair and transparent ap-
proach to base transfers and related matters. In the 19 days since the first one-day strike took place, company management has agreed to just two hours of talks, despite Fórsa’s repeated assurance that it is available for discussions at any time. The union has today told Ryanair that it remains available for talks. “The airline’s escalation of the dispute last Wednesday (July 25) – when it threatened to sack 100 pilots and 200 cabin crew, or transfer them to Poland – led to a predictable hardening of resolve among its staff.” In a statement, Ryanair said it “deeply regrets” that further strike action has been planned.

Trump Pushes Lawyers To Allow Mueller Interview
President Trump pushed his lawyers in recent days to try once again to reach an agreement with the special counsel’s office about his sitting for an interview, flouting their advice that he should not answer investigators’ questions, three people briefed on the matter said on Wednesday. Mr Trump has told advisers he is eager to meet with investigators to clear himself of wrongdoing, the people said. In effect, he believes he can convince the investigators for the special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, of his belief that their own inquiry is a “witch hunt.” Mr Mueller, whose team has negotiated the parameters of an interview with Mr Trump’s lawyers for eight months, sent his latest proposal in a letter Tuesday night, the three people said. Investigators stood firm on the scope of and topics for their questions for Mr Trump: possible coordination between his associates and Russia’s election interference and whether he tried to obstruct the investigation. They did shift slightly on format, agreeing to accept some written answers, including matters in which they want to

preserve the ability to have Mr Trump answer follow-ups in person. In doing so, they firmed up a previously expressed willingness to allow certain answers in writing. The president’s lawyers are unwilling to concede to follow-ups in person, citing concerns that Mr Trump will increase his legal exposure, the people said. They have been prepared to tell Mr Mueller’s office there will be no interview, risking a court fight over a subpoena that could drag into November’s midterm elections, but Mr Trump pushed them to continue negotiating. The lawyers are likely to counter Mr Mueller’s proposal in the coming days, according to the three people. “We’re in the process of responding to their proposal,” the president’s lead lawyer for the investigation, Rudolph W. Giuliani, told reporters after an event in Portsmouth, NH, on Wednesday. The special counsel’s office declined to comment. The month-long back and forth among the special counsel’s office, Mr Trump’s lawyers and the president himself demonstrates the significant obstacles that still stand in the way of an interview. Mr Trump has put his lawyers in the vexing position of trying to follow the desires of their client while seeking to protect him from legal jeopardy at the same time.
Teens Demanding Road Safety Paralyse Dhaka
Thousands of Bangladeshi high school students have been protesting for a fifth day after two teenagers were killed by a speeding bus. The demonstrators, demanding justice and road safety measures, have brought the capital Dhaka to a virtual standstill. A government minister has accused them of hypocrisy, triggering further anger. The education ministry has closed high schools across the country and promised to take their demands into account. However, this did not end the protests. “They should have taken our demands seriously, but they didn’t,” Imran Ahmed, a protesting student, told AFP. There are reports that some
of the protesters, mostly aged in their mid-teens, have been checking bus registration plates and demanding to see drivers’ identity documents. “We don’t want any vehicles without licences on the streets. Those unfit to drive should not get licences, and we don’t want underage motorists driving public transport,” protester Mohammad Sifat told AFP. Some vehicles have been vandalised and police armed with shields and batons have driven the protesters back in some parts of the city. Bus operators have responded by suspending their services. Bangladesh’s transport sector is regarded by many as corrupt and dangerous.

Europe’s Heat Record Could Be Broken This Week
As Europe bakes in another heatwave, forecasters say the all-time temperature record could be broken in the coming days. The current European record is 48C (118.4F) set in Athens in July 1977. Temperatures are rising in Spain and Portugal, aided by a surge of hot air sweeping in from Africa. Forecasters say the heat in some parts could keep rising, breaking national records and even the 41-year-old European record. Spain’s national weather service has put a warning in place until at least Sunday, saying the heatwave will be “especially intense and lasting in the southwest”. Europe’s weather warning group, Meteoalarm, has already issued red warnings - categorised as very dangerous and
posing a risk to life - for much of southern Portugal and for the Badajoz province in Spain. Portugal’s national record is 47.4C (117.3F), set in 2003. Spain’s peak of 47.3C (117.1F) was only set in July last year. “Friday and Saturday are likely to be the hottest days with a very real chance of breaking records,” forecaster Meteogroup said. Temperatures will climb from 45-46C on Thursday to 47C by the weekend - and “it is quite possible we will break the Spanish and Portuguese national records”. Meteogroup said there was a 40% chance of equalling the 48C record from Athens - and “a 2530% chance that we will break the European temperature record”.
Pope Changes Church’s Teachings On Death Penalty Pope Francis has changed the teachings of the Catholic faith to officially oppose the death penalty in all circumstances, the Vatican has said. The Catechism of the Church, a codified doctrine which sums up teachings, had previously stated that the death penalty could be used in some cases. It now says it is “inadmissible because it is an attack on the inviolability and dignity of the person”. Pope Francis has spoken out against executions in the past. Last October, he had said the Church’s policy on the death penalty was one area where teaching was not static and could change with modern concerns. The text of the catechism was first set by Pope John Paul II in
October 1992, and earlier stated that the death penalty was “an appropriate response to the gravity of certain crimes and an acceptable, albeit extreme, means of safeguarding the common good”. However, the new text says there is “an increasing awareness that the dignity of the person is not lost even after the commission of very serious crimes”. It also argues that today’s more effective detention methods protect citizens and “do not definitively deprive the guilty of the possibility of redemption”. The Church will now work with determination for the abolition of the death penalty worldwide, a statement from the Holy See said.
Eddie The Glengarriff Eagle Has Been Found Dead
The white-tailed sea eagle whose parents were introduced as fledglings from Norway in 2007 was born in Glengarriff in 2016 and became the first wild sea eagle to fledge in Co. Cork in over 100 years. After leaving his nest site on Garnish Island in late 2016 he was sighted at several locations on the north side of the Beara, which runs into Kerry, during his first winter. Since spring of 2017 there had been sightings of him on the nearby Iveragh Peninsula in Kerry and afterwards he had remained around Dingle Bay and the Blasket as well as Tralee and Brandon Bay. He had not been seen since June. The last sighting of him had been at Fermoyle Beach not far from where his remains were discovered by a forestry worker in a Coillte plantation near Clochán (Cloghane) in the west Kerry Gaeltacht. Eddie’s movements were tracked by the public and the reports and photographs
were “invaluable” as he was not tracked by satellite tagging, unlike several other of the white-tailed eagles, Conservation Ranger Clare Heardman said on Facebook. It was not possible to say what caused his death. Dr Allan Mee, who has managed the largely successful reintroduction project, said that while it is possible Eddie died of natural causes, such as starvation, most such natural eagle mortality occurred in the first year of life. The likelihood reduced the older the birds got. “However, human related mortality, for example poisoning, can equally impact all age classes,” Dr Mee said. A number of the eagles in the programme managed by the Golden Eagle Trust and the National Parks and Wildlife Service, which have ranged as far as Scotland and Northern Ireland from their base in Killarney, have been killed. Around 13 have been poisoned.
Apple Is Now Worth $1 Trillion Apple has become the world’s first public company to be worth $1 trillion. The iPhone maker’s market value reached the figure in late morning trading in New York as its shares rose to a new record high above $207. The stock has been rising since Tuesday when it reported better than expected results for the three months to June. Apple beat Silicon Valley rivals such as Amazon and Microsoft to become the first to hit the $1 trillion valuation. Since the iPhone first went on sale in 2007, Apple shares have soared by 1,100% and have jumped almost a third in the past year. The rise is even more astonishing 50,000% - since the company first listed in 1980. That dwarfs the 2,000% increase for the S&P 500 over the same period. Apple traces its origins to the garage of co-founder Steve Jobs in 1976 and was ini-
tially best known for its Mac personal computers before its smartphone paved the way for the app economy. Mr Jobs, who died in 2011 and was succeeded as chief executive by Tim Cook, oversaw the development of the iPhone, which transformed Apple’s fortunes. In 2006 the company had sales of less than $20bn and posted profits of almost $2bn. Last year its sales hit $229bn, with profits of $48.4bn, making it the most profitable listed US company. PetroChina was briefly worth about $1.1 trillion after floating in Shanghai in 2007, although most of its shares were held by the Chinese government. It is now worth about $220bn. Adjusted for inflation, numerous US companies from General Electric to Microsoft have been worth more than Apple is today.

Jill from Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio talks about getting dramatic results with CACI The award winning CACI (Computer Aided Cosmetology Instrument) has gained the reputation as the finest microcurrent machine available. Backed by over twenty years of research, CACI is the best-known system within the beauty industry, and is considered to be the most advanced treatment system of its kind. Indeed, treatment results are often so dramatic that CACI has become known as “the non-surgical facelift”. By utilising a unique combination of specific waveforms and frequencies that work in harmony with the body’s own bio-electrical field, CACI transmits tiny electrical impulses and signals that have been documented to stimulate muscle tone and enhance skin tissue. A CACI non-surgical face lift is an electronic beauty treatment using a CACI machine. CACI treatments lift the face by toning facial muscles, smoothing away fine lines and wrinkles and preventing sagging skin. CACI achieves visible facelift results, helping to tighten sagging muscles and skin, and smoothing away fine lines and wrinkles. The CACI programme consists of a course of weekly treatments, followed by a monthly maintenance session. CACI offers, for the first time, a serious alternative to surgery in an increasingly appearance conscious world. CACI gently tightens and tones the muscles while smoothing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. CACI’s
dual-tipped probes increase the effect on the muscle producing immediate and dramatic results Lines and Wrinkles: An impressive feature of CACI, is its dual outlets which allow for the simultaneous use of pads and probes. These target both the face and neck area at the same time, making for a doubly effective treatment. CACI Hydratone:Hydratone is another treatment from Caci which we have incorporated into our famous Caci facial. The Hydratone procedure provides immediate and intensive skin hydration and face firming. Progressive results are achieved through a course of treatments, but for optimum effect, the Hydratone treatment works spectacularly with the traditional CACI non surgical lifting technique. Hydratone combines active micro current rollers with a unique, electrically conductive gel mask that has been infused with powerful hydrating properties. (Collagen, hyaluronic acid, vitamin C and vitamin E)The rollers gently massage the face causing the mask to become charged so that the whole face is bathed with rejuvenating energy. The energy delivered by the rollers recharges and replenishes the bio-electrical energy within the facial muscles and in so doing helps to restore muscle tone and firmness. At the same time, the energy generated also drives the hydrating actives contained within the gel mask deep into the skin tissue.
Garden Magic Words: Debby Looney
Install A Water Feature For A Healthy Eco-System In times of extremely cold weather our thoughts always turn to the birds and wildlife. We buy nuts, mealworms, fatballs and seeds to help our feathered friends through the tough times. During the period of dry weather I wonder did as many of us think of them? One way to help them is certainly to install a water feature of some sort. Not only do we help birds but by having a water feature, especially a pond, we can encourage a huge diversity of insects, birds, mammals and amphibians into the garden, which all contribute towards a healthy eco-system. A water feature can be as big and fancy or as small and simple as budget and taste dictate. I, myself, long for a formal pool, however I settled (for now) for a small, self-built pond. It really can be as simple as digging a hole, lining it and filling it with water! A good way to gauge what size your pond should be is by checking out the sizes of liner. There is rubber sheeting which can be cut to size, moulded basins, or alternatively you can line your pond with concrete. The simplest is the moulded basin, which is solid, durable and comes in many different shapes and
sizes. To install these you just need to dig a hole large enough to accommodate your basin, then backfill with sand, packing in as you go. These preformed ponds are very easy and fast to install. The rubber sheeting is perhaps cheaper, and you can create your own shape. Again, dig your hole, then line with old carpet, insulation or sand, making sure any stones are removed as they could puncture the liner. Thirdly, and probably the best option if you are considering a large pond, is concrete. Line your pond with chicken wire and piece-by-piece build the concrete up. If you are “lucky” enough to have a garden of clay, try digging a hole to see whether you need to line it at all! Perhaps you already have a naturally occurring pond, and these types of pond are perfect, just not suitable for keeping fish as it might dry out. Keeping fish is one of the joys of a pond and in our
climate it need not necessarily be expensive Koi fish. Ordinary goldfish survive and grow very well outside, just make sure the pond is at least 60cm deep in parts so that there is no danger of freezing. During the hot summer months, blanketweed can be a problem. However, keeping 70% of the surface area covered with plants will reduce this problem significantly, as well as giving fish and other wildlife shelter. In all cases make sure to stagger the sides. This helps wildlife to climb out, and also gives you different planting opportunities! A pond gives a whole new range of plants to explore – it is ideal for those of us who have no space in our borders left, and need a new challenge!

Steve McQueen’s Family Suing Ferrari Steve McQueen’s descendants are suing Ferrari for marketing cars around the image of the iconic actor without compensating the family. The Italian sports car maker profited unfairly from the actor’s legacy in 2016 when it introduced ‘The McQueen’, a limited-edition California T created as part of Ferrari’s 70th anniversary, said the lawsuit, which was recently filed in a California state court. The suit was filed by the actor’s son, Chadwick McQueen, and the estate of
the actor’s daughter, Terry McQueen, on behalf of granddaughter Molly McQueen. The two parties are the co-owners of Steve McQueen’s right of publicity and trademark rights. The family’s suit seeks an injunction against Ferrari’s McQueen marketing, an award of all profits gained from the “infringing acts,” financial damages and “the destruction of all marketing, advertising, or promotional materials depicting Steve McQueen’s name, photograph or likeness.”
Tesla Makes ‘Mind-Blowing Leap Forward’ Despite Record Loss Tesla has surprised investors and analysts with its latest quarterly set of results, sending shares up more than 10% in after-hours trading. But Elon Musk’s electric car company still lost a record-breaking amount of cash, with losses of US$717 million more than doubling compared to the same quarter in 2017. Tesla burned through US$430 million of its cash reserves – but because this was less than investors expected, the results were seen positively, which is why shares rose so sharply. The
firm still has US$2.2 billion of cash in reserve, easing concerns that it might run out of money. Musk also said Tesla aims to make a profit in the second half of the year, for the first time in its 15-year history. Overall, Tesla delivered 18,000 Model 3 in the previous quarter, and a total of more than 40,000 cars overall, once Model S and Model X are factored in. Musk also apologised for his erratic performance on the firm’s previous quarterly investor call, and for controversial comments about the rescuer of boys trapped in a cave in Thailand.
Audi Teases Pure-Electric E-Tron Supercar Audi has announced it will reveal an all-new, pure-electric supercar concept called the PB18 e-tron at Pebble Beach Car Week in Monterey, California later this month. The single, darkened head-on image of what’s being touted as the replacement for the current Audi R8 supercar previews a car that was styled at Audi’s new Californian design studio. There’s no word on what’s set to power the PB18 e-tron, but Audi has confirmed its futuristic supercar’s design will
be heavily inspired by the R18 e-tron racer, which won the world famous Le Mans endurance race three times over 2012-2014. From our first glimpse, the concept is a wide, low supercar with trick slimline rear cameras mounted at the top of the doors to replace traditional door mirrors, which could make it into production. The headlights, meanwhile, are likely to incorporate the car maker’s next-gen laser LED headlights.

5 Vintage Roadsters That Defined An Era Of Beautiful Motoring There’s no shortage of cool cars for today’s auto aficionados, but it comes with a cruel irony. As we’re faced with more and more automotive options, it seems the cars themselves get more similar every day. Who wants a generic sports car when you could have something with character? These beautiful vintage roadsters would make A+ additions to any serious driver’s car collection… That’s providingng you can find them for sale. 1953 Porsche 550 Spyder The Porsche 550 Spyder was designed for use in auto racing and introduced at the 1953 Paris Auto Show. Built low to the ground in order to be efficient on the track, the roadster won its first race in May 1953 and went on to become an active participant around the European and US champions circuit until 1965. 1957 Mercedes Benz 300SL Roadster Mercedes-Benz introduced a Roadster version of the 300SL at the 1957 Geneva Motor Show. The initial version was known for its gullwing doors, first-ever consumer fuel-injection and for reaching the world’s fastest top speed at the time. In 1957, the original 300SL got the Roadster makeover along with cosmetic changes like larger headlights, a smaller grille and a chrome accent strip down the side of the car. 1966 Jaguar E-Type The Jaguar E-Type’s killer combination of good looks, high performance and competitive pricing made it unbeatable during the 1960s. Legend has it that when it went on display for the first time at the 1961 Geneva Motor Show, Enzo Ferrari himself remarked that it was the most beautiful car he’d ever seen. 1966 saw the introduction of a 2+2 body style to the E-Type line-up. 1956-1959 BMW 507 The BMW 507 was initially intended to be exported to the United States at a rate of thousands per year, but the undertaking proved to be too expensive. In the end only 252 units were made and losses were heavy for BMW. Shockingly, over 200 of the 507s are still known to exist, a testimony to the timeless design of BMW’s most valuable classic road car. 1956 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider The Alfa Romeo Giulietta was introduced at the Turin Motor Show in 1954. The open two-seat Giulietta Spider made its debut in mid-1955, featuring convertible bodywork by Pininfarina. It was Alfa Romeo’s first post-war convertible and remained in production, more or less untouched, until the arrival of the Duetto in 1966.

NOVENA TO THE HOLY SPIRIT
O Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal. You gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances of my life you are with me. I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things you have given me as you confirm once again that I never wanted to be separated from you in spite of all material illusions. I wish to be with you in Eternal Glory. Thank you for mercy towards me and mine. This prayer must be said for three days, after three days the favour will be granted. MOD.

Oh Mother of the word incarnate despise not my petition but in thy clemency hear and answer me. Amen. MOD

Death leaves heartache no one can heal, Memories are treasures no one can steal, Some may forget you, Now that you are gone, But we will remember No matter how long,
No words we write can ever say, How much we miss you everyday, No one knows the grief we bear, When the family gather And you’re not there,
You will always stay loved And remembered in every way No tears, no verse can ever say How much we miss you everyday.
We laugh, we talk, we play the part, But beyond the sorrow is a broken heart. The sorrow we feel, We can never explain, And the ache in our hearts Will always remain.
Love always, Teresa, Timmy and Kiernan. Always loved and remembered by your loving children and families.

Karen Smiling, laughing, dimpled cheeks, Vibrant, busy, scaling peaks. Waving, greeting young and old, Face of beauty still and cold. Cycling, always on the go, Music, meetings, never no. Work her favourite, aprons white, Trays and traffic, what a sight. Muckross rowing, lakes serene, Just twenty one, what might have been. Time and tide, days too short, New job waiting, soon to start. Cycling homeward, traffic speeding, Father, mother, sisters grieving. Romance, boyfriend, last goodbyes, her moon, her stars, her loved filled eyes. Void of darkness hearts so broken, Special person, love unspoken. Memories vivid never end, On walking sleeping of time not spent. Rest above the lakes so loved, Watch forever from above. Anger, grief, great confusion, Friends, tears in huge profusion. Nights of sadness, days so barren, Busy, laughing, lovely Karen. By Weeshie. Always in our thoughts, forever in our hearts, sadly missed by Mam, Anne, Clare, Susan and families. Anniversary Mass for Karen and her father Geni on Sunday 5th of August 9.30am at Muckross Church.

7 Things To Watch Out For
Kerry v Kildare Tomorrow at 6pm m Fitzgerald Stadiu
Words: Adam Moynihan

Inset: David Clifford Pic: Paudie Healy
1. Fitzmaurice’s last stand? The Monaghan game was billed as door-die for Eamonn Fitzmaurice but, in the end, he did neither. This time out it’s do-or-die again for the Kerry manager - but he could end up doing both. David Clifford’s last gasp equaliser in Clones afforded the Finuge man a stay of execution but anything besides a win tomorrow will eliminate Kerry and, in all likelihood, signal the end of his tenure. Even if Kerry do win, their fate is out of their hands. It’s a perilous position for Fitzmaurice to find himself in and he’ll need a big performance from his team – and a favour from Galway – to make it through the weekend unscathed. 2. The keeper conundrum. Legion’s Brian Kelly was drafted in to replace Shane Murphy up in Clones and while I felt it was harsh enough to drop the Crokes man in the first place, you couldn’t fault Kelly on the day. As strange as it was to discard your supposed number one keeper at this stage of the season, it would almost be even stranger to switch back again now. That’s not to say it won’t happen. If Fitzmaurice has shown anything throughout his tenure it’s that he’s not afraid to make big calls.
3. A starring role? Kieran Donaghy came in and played the full game against Monaghan but up until the 74th minute he wasn’t utilised effectively. Unless Kerry are going to station Star in on top of the square send long passes in his direction, I don’t see the point in starting him - certainly not ahead of James O’Donoghue. 4. He’s on fire. David Clifford made his championship debut against Clare in June and the consensus was, yes, he’s class, but it’ll take time. Two short months later and he’s the main reason Kerry are still in the championship. His numbers in the Super 8s have been frankly ridiculous. The Fossa teenager has scored 2-7 from 12 shots against Galway and Monaghan. He’s shooting 70% (7/10) on point attempts and 100% on goal attempts (2/2). It’s frightening stuff and Kerry fans will be hoping that his hot streak continues tomorrow evening. 5. From Newbridge to nowhere. Kildare have been unable to carry the momentum from their memorable victory over the GAA (and Mayo) into the Super 8s and, following two defeats, they have nothing play for against
Kerry. Having said that, Cian O’Neill, a former Kerry selector, will be desperate to avoid a hockeying in Killarney so you’d expect his charges to fight tomorrow. 6. The permutations. Their poor showing in the opening two games of the Super 8s means that Kerry now require snookers if they are to advance to the semi-finals. For the Kingdom to qualify, they need to beat Kildare, Galway need to beat Monaghan and there has to be a swing of six in the points differential between Kerry and Monaghan. (Apologies for all the ‘if’s in the next few paragraphs.) For example, if Kerry beat Kildare by three and Galway beat Monaghan by three, Kerry will advance. If Galway beat Monaghan by five, Kerry only need to win their game by a point. But if, as expected, it’s a close game and Galway only manage to beat Monaghan by a single point, Kerry need to beat Kildare by five. If the sides finish on the same points difference, it will come down to points scored. At the moment Kerry are on 33 and Monaghan are on 35. If the teams
still can’t be separated, the team with the most goals will move on to the next round. Kerry currently have two. Monaghan have one. The chances may be low but it’s not entirely inconceivable that Kerry and Monaghan might finish dead level at the end of play. If that happens, a play-off will be required. 7. The other game. Of course, all the match-ups and tactics and permutations won’t matter a jot if Malachy O’Rourke’s charges go out and get a result in Salthill. A draw will suffice for both Galway and Monaghan and the conspiracy theorists will be out in force if that transpires. Realistically, though, I doubt Galway will want to face Dublin in the semis. You might say that they’ll have to beat them at some stage anyway but I’m sure they’d rather get to an All-Ireland final than not. Machiavellian scheming aside, I’ve been impressed by Monaghan so far and I think they have a real chance of pushing Galway close. There will be a lot of heads stuck in smart phones up in the terrace tomorrow evening at around twenty past seven. Prediction: Kerry by six… but Galway and Monaghan draw.

It Will Make For Great Viewing
Pic: Paudie Healy
Words: Eamonn Fitzgerald
The brilliant goal by David Clifford in the dying seconds of the match in Clones adds a whole new dimension to tomorrow’s games in Salthill and in Killarney. Galway have already qualified but they will want to win their last game versus Monaghan so as to avoid Dublin who will top the other group. A win or a draw will qualify Monaghan. Switch to Killarney where Kildare are playing to restore some honour. They have lost both their matches in Group 1. Kerry, meanwhile, are still in with a chance to qualify. They have that single point and a further two points tomorrow would see them through - if they win by five or more points and Galway beat Monaghan. Both games are timed for 6pm. It will make for great viewing. Kerry were dreadful against Galway in Croke Park and deserved to lose by a big margin. On to Clones where they were in arrears throughout the game until that grandstand finish where they scored 1-2 in the final five minutes to earn a draw, which they did not deserve over the whole game. The omens were there from the second minute when their star forward Conor McManus turned Mark Griffin to slot a morale boosting goal. He went on to score 1-9 (1-4 from play). Add in the contribution of Rory Beggan the Monaghan goalkeeper who kicked four points from placed balls.
It was a case of horses for courses in that game as Eamonn Fitzmaurice dropped the goalkeeper Shane Murphy and the three players in the full back line. Mark Griffin was in trouble throughout, but Kerry waited until half-time to switch over Ronan Shanahan on McManus who did much better on the Monaghan star. Kildare will have to go without their best forward tomorrow. Daniel Flynn, their full forward, was sent off in the game against Galway so that should ease things a bit for Kerry. It is difficult to predict which team Kerry will send out tomorrow in the Fitzgerald Stadium. Brian Kelly could do nothing to prevent the goal by McManus so he will get the number one geansaí. Ronan Shanahan or Jason Foley will probably get the number three shirt and Tom O’Sullivan will get his place in the corner. He played an attacking role in Clones and was very impressive scoring two points. Gavin White, meanwhile, continues to impress. I would like to see him play as a third midfielder as he has great pace and is very comfortable going forward. He can solo with both legs. Kerry lost the midfield battle in Clones and I wasn’t impressed by David Moran or, indeed, Jack Barry. Mark Griffin may end up at midfield someday but he would be a risk in such a big day with so much at stake in tomorrow’s match. Micheál Burns added great
drive when he came on at half-time and may be in from the start. James O’Donoghue or Kieran Donaghy? That is the big decision for the forwards. Seán O’Shea kicked eight points in Clones including six frees and one 45. I felt it was a big gamble to take him off. Paul Geaney had an off day and deserved to be withdrawn but he is a star player and will go in at corner forward. Stephen O’Brien and David Clifford are automatic choices. The new young players did best of all in Clones so they deserve to be picked on form. Kildare had a dreadful league campaign but raised their game in this round robin series of games. They ran Galway very close, 16 points to 19 points. The much publicised battle with the GAA about playing their home games in Newbridge seemed to galvanise the efforts of team boss Cian O Neill to get the best out of his charges. Flynn will be a loss to them away from home but Paul Cribben, Neil Flynn and Paddy Brophy have impressed me. Peter Cooke and Tom Flynn are two traditional ball-fetching midfielders and should suit David Moran and Jack Barry. So much depends on this game where Kerry must win by five points or more. Anything below this will not do. Kerry can deliver the goods at 6pm tomorrow in the Fitzgerald Stadium. Rephrase that: Kerry must win tomorrow and so must Galway.

In Ireland there’s a standard path to becoming a professional soccer player and it goes like this: get spotted by a scout, get a trial for an English team, and, if you’re lucky enough, get signed. But what happens if the old way doesn’t work for you? 99.9% of boys simply give up on their dream. 18-year-old Micheál Devlin from Muckross is one of the 0.1%. The Killarney youngster still has ambitions to play sport at the highest level and, with little prospect of making that happen here in Ireland, he’s taking an alternative route to get there. This Sunday he’s saying goodbye to friends and family and shipping off to Washington DC where he hopes to make his mark with the Georgetown University soccer team. Micheál, who lined out for the Kerry U-17 footballers and was part of the St Brendan’s College team who won the Hogan Cup in 2017, says he considered playing Gaelic football in a college closer to home but, in the end, it didn’t seem like a good fit. “I did a tour of UL and I wasn’t really blown away with it, and I didn’t think I was good enough to get on the UCC U-20 football team, so I started

looking at soccer. I didn’t really have a strong background here – I didn’t make the Kennedy Cup team – so my dad (Mike, originally from Tyrone) suggested the idea of going to America.” Trevor Nagle, who coaches the soccer teams at St Brendan’s College, put Micheál in touch with Stephen Murray from Pass4Soccer, a company that secures soccer scholarships in US universities for players from the UK, Ireland and further afield. Micheál went up and played a trial game in Dublin and Stephen suggested that he do the American tour. The Pass4Soccer hopefuls travelled to North Carolina in March to play against five college teams in seven days and to say Micheál was impressed would be an understatement. “Everything was just a million times better than what we’re used to here. Even the poorer colleges have state of the art facilities. It’s absolutely crazy. I was lucky enough to play in Croker and on the tour we played on the main pitch of one of the D1 schools. It was just as good.” The standard, too, was much higher than he anticipated. “We played against the University of North Carolina and the level of soccer was unreal. I kind of
went over thinking, ‘yeah, Americans playing soccer…’ but they were class.” The Killarney Celtic right back caught the eye of more than one coach over the course of the week but one was particularly interested: Coach Brent Chase at Georgetown University. He told the Devlins that he’d better any offer they received from other colleges and he was true to his word. Micheál will be on a full scholarship at one of the most highly rated schools in the country. Many youngsters might be daunted by the prospect of moving so far away from home for four years but Micheál jumped at the opportunity. “It wasn’t really a tough decision to make. It just seemed right. My family were very supportive as well - they can’t wait to get rid of me I’d say! I’m a small bit nervous now. It’s getting tougher by the day. Last Sunday at five o’clock I realised, ‘Jesus, this time next week I’ll be on a plane…’ But I can come home for a month at Christmas and that’s only 12 weeks away. It’s not too bad.” College athletes don’t always play in their freshman year but Micheál is hoping to get a chance straight away. days at Columbus State Community College, was given the Hoyas job earlier this year and he is clearly a big fan of the schools’ first ever Irish player. Looking to the future, Micheál’s eyes are firmly set on getting his accountancy degree first and foremost and, if things go well on the field, the prospect of declaring for the MLS SuperDraft is something that really excites him. “If I got the opportunity, I’d take it. Growing up you dream of playing for Manchester United or someone like that… But I think it’d be unreal to play in the MLS.” It might not be the normal path for Irish players but America’s biggest league is growing in size and popularity and with an average wage of $6,000 per week, it should certainly be an enticing option for any would-be pro. It’s a fantastic opportunity for Micheál and from what I’ve seen of him he has the determination and talent to make a real go of it. And even if he doesn’t end up realising his American dream, an accountancy degree from one of the top colleges in the United States isn’t exactly a bad thing to fall back on…

Fáilte Legends Go Back-To-Back Words: Adam Moynihan
The Fáilte Legends went back-to-back last week as they clinched their second consecutive Killarney Athletic Senior 7-a-side title. With a team made up predominantly of Killarney Celtic players, the Fáilte romped to a 5-2 victory over Liebherr in the final, despite going behind early on. Derry Ahern gave the underdogs the lead in the first half but the defending champions reacted positively and led 2-1 by the break. They pushed on to add a further three after the interval, Martin Crowley adding a consolation goal for Liebherr. Wayne Sparling netted twice for the victors with Gary Keane, Paudie Clifford and Matt Keane completing the scoring. Matt ran away with Golden Boot Award, registering an impressive tally of 14 goals over the course
of the tournament. He walked away with a prize courtesy of sponsor Brian James. His teammate Chris O’Leary was presented with the Kieran Cahillane Trophy for Player of the Tournament. Soccer enthusiast John O’Brien was once again deservedly named Supporter of the Tournament. A solitary goal from big Nick Murphy was enough to seal the Over 35 final for Leane’s Tool Hire as they beat Tim Jones & Sons in a keenly contested game. Boru Barbers won the Battle of the Sick Fades as they defeated Steve’s Barbers in the Under 16 final. A brace from Terry Sparling propelled Boru to a 2-0 win, and the talented goalscorer was awarded the Johnny Heffernan Memorial Shield for Player of the Tournament. The award was presented by Sandra Heffernan.
In a statement, Killarney Athletic expressed their gratitude to players, organisers and sponsors. “A big ‘thank you’ to all who participated, their sponsors and to the committee who worked very hard to ensure the continued success of this tournament. “A special word of thanks to our sponsors the Killarney Credit Union for their continued sponsorship and to Stephen Darmody, Financial Coordinator, and Helen Courtney Power. A special mention also to Pat Delaney RIP, former Chairman of Killarney Credit Union. No night went by during the tournament that Pat’s name wasn’t mentioned. He was sorely missed this year at the 7-a-side but he will never be forgotten. Rest in Peace, Pat.”

Tanak Wins As Ostberg Holds Off Latvala
Motorsport - WRC Ott Tanak completed a dominant Rally Finland victory for Toyota with a calm run to the finish, while Thierry Neuville limited the damage to his World Rally Championship lead. After a spectacular lead battle with the resurgent Citroen of Mads Ostberg through Friday, Tanak broke away with a crushing string of stage wins on Saturday morning and then protected his advantage to win by 32.7 seconds. He ensured a maximum 30-point score by winning the Power Stage too. Ostberg came under increasing pressure from Jari-Matti Latvala in the second half of the event and looked unlikely to hold second place as he grappled with high tyre wear. But a strong Power Stage run earned second for Ostberg, his first WRC podium since March 2016, by just 2.8s over Latvala.
Title rivals Sebastien Ogier and Neuville had largely miserable weekends. Ogier made constant set-up changes to try to get the best from his Ford and ended up fifth when teammate Teemu Suninen picked up a deliberate penalty for an early check-in on the final morning and also helped by Elfyn Evans slowing on Friday to give him a position and a better day two running order spot. Neuville struggled with running first on the road on Friday and made life harder for himself by spinning, clipping a tree and sustaining damage. He finished a very distant ninth but did pick up two points from the Power Stage where Ogier didn’t score - so his championship cushion remains 21 points. Craig Breen couldn’t join Citroen teammate Ostberg in the victory battle as a Friday morning puncture limited him to eighth.
Rugby News ... Words: Liam Murphy
The PRO14 fixtures were announced this week to some fanfare, with the European Cup fixtures likely to be announced over the next few weeks. The European Cup is now the Heineken European Cup and will always be known as the Heineken Cup to the majority of rugby fans and to Munster fans in particular. We look forward to seeing whom Munster are matched against in the Heineken Cup, however the PRO14 has generated much debate and excitement over the fixtures. Munster’s season kicks off in two weeks’ time at Musgrave Park in the first preseason friendly as they welcome Declan Kidney’s London Irish. With Les Kiss on board and spending big money on players over the summer, The Exiles are determined to return to the English Premiership following last season’s relegation. With Kidney and Kiss returning, this will prove a good challenge for the Munster boys. The following week Munster take on Premiership side Exeter Chiefs, who were runners up last season. Another tough but exciting match in prospect for Johan Van Graan’s side. Following this, Munster take on the Toyota Cheetahs at Thomond, the Glasgow Warriors away, Ospreys in Cork, Cardiff away

Lewis Hamilton Wins Hungarian Grand Prix
Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton won the Hungarian Grand Prix from pole position for Mercedes on Sunday to go into the August break with a 24-point lead over Ferrari rival Sebastian Vettel. Vettel was runner-up, 17.1 seconds behind, and surviving a late collision with Hamilton’s team mate Valtteri Bottas who also banged bodywork with Red Bull’s Australian Daniel Ricciardo. The victory was Hamilton’s record sixth in Hungary, fifth of the season and 67th of his career. In a race effectively decided by Saturday’s wet qualifying, when Mercedes locked out the front row of the grid against expectation, Hamilton was never challenged. After 12 races, Hamilton has 213 points to Vettel’s 189. Vettel, lining up in fourth place on the grid, went for it from lights out, grabbing third from Raikkonen immediately but he could not find a way past Bottas who slotted in behind Hamilton as a defence against the red threat. Raikkonen, without water during the race after Ferrari forgot to connect the bottle, made two stops and agreed third - his fifth successive podium. Ricciardo, starting 12th, finished fourth with his teammate Max Verstappen retiring early on with a Renault engine failure. Bottas ended up fifth, and was called to see stewards about the collisions, with French driver Pierre Gasly sixth for Toro Rosso.
Excitement Builds As PRO14 Fixtures Announced

Dr Crokes Club
Senior County League Division 1 Round 10. Rathmore 2-9 Dr Crokes 1-15. In a game which was easily the toughest and most competitive we played in this years league we emerged at the end three points in front. This left us unbeaten in the league in 2018 with 9 wins and one draw. It also qualified us for the final with a home venue with one round to go. We had the better of exchanges in the first ten minutes and led by 0-4 to 0-2. Rathmore got well on top in the next ten minutes, scoring a goal and two points to our opponents one point in the remaining ten minutes. Rathmore went in at the interval 1-5 to 0-6 in front. Rathmore added on two points in the first five minutes of the second half for a four point lead. We responded straight away with five unanswered points to go one point ahead at the end of the third quarter. Our opponents equalised a minute later but a goal by Jordan Kiely, which was the game changer, and a point by Brian Looney put us four points clear with ten minutes to go. Rathmore had the next score, a point, but three points without reply by us put us six points ahead going into the last few minutes. Our opponents had a goal in injury time but this was followed by the final whistle. This left us winners by three points and a place in the final. Colm Cooper and Jordan Kiely scored 1-9 between them, 0-6 by the former and 1-3 by the latter. In a great team performance I am reluctant to mention individuals. On this occasion however I have to mention the outstanding display of Colm Cooper. It was vintange “Gooch” per-

Congratulations to the management and players on winning the title improving and developing over the two days was the secret of the success. Kerry South U15 team took part in the Under 15 National Football Tournament in Portlaoise, Playing Wexford and Meath was always going to be a tough ask the players rose to the challenge. Playing excellent open football in the first match Wexford were defeated by a polished team display. Meath proved a tougher challenge working hard to limit Kerry South scoring return. The team showed great character to weather the Meath storm and finish well to secure a well deserved victory. Congratulations to the management and players on reaching the final stages of the Adam Mangan U15 tournament.

U-14 BOYS: On Monday evening Fossa under 14s were away to the Division 1 County champions in Barraduff. The prize was a home venue for the final, Glenflesk went in 3-03 to 1-03 ahead at half time. The final will take place in Fossa on Monday 3007-2018 at 7.00 against Glenflesk. All support will be appreciated. LADIES FOOTBALL: Unfortunately the Kerry U-16 girls lost to Galway in the All-Ireland final last Wednesday evening after a titanic battle that went to extra time, Maud Kelly was

The next draw will take place in John Dans on 13/08/18 and the Jackpot is €4600. KLLARNEY LEGION CO.LEAGUE RD 9: Glenbeigh/Glencar 0-9 Killarney Legion 1-9. The penultimate county league game saw the seniors gather another deserved two points which effectively guarantees their Div.1 status.Turning in a fine first half performance they led 1-6 to 0-2 at the break. With Padraig Lucey as the ideal target man at full forward the forward play was lively and creative.Once they got into their stride they looked dangerous and slowly but surely the scoreboard tally increased.Dominant at midfield Billy McGuire and Jack O Neill certainly did their bit and it was the latter who rode a hefty tackle to deliver a telling ball which saw Finbarr Murphy cleverly slip the backs and he cooly slipped the ball to the net with a neat finish.A huge amount of the credit though must go to the Legion backs who were disciplined and hard working throughout turning over possesion numerous times as well as applying constant pressure. Foremost was Damien O Sullivan who hardly put a foot wrong and his reading of the game was top class.Denis Sheahan put in another tremendous shift and despite a lag in the performance at the start of the second half the Legion had the wherewithall to regroup and pull away again for the win.The team has been steadily improving and with a good number due to rejoin the panel it will certainly inject more energy into them as the various championships approach. ABHAILE ós na STÁIT AONTAITHE: An added bonus on the night in Glenbeigh was the return on holidays from the U.S.of Séan Brosnan formerly of Hibernian House,New St.and family. He was accompanied by his brother Donal who had a foot in both camps.Enjoy the break Séan and welcome home.
