Jack keeps promise to Thomas with special song tribute

A Killarney man who is much loved for his musical talent has paid a wonderful and very special tribute to his young teenage brother who tragically died in July.

Four people were arrested in town at the weekend following "unruly behaviour".

| By Michelle Crean 14-year-old Thomas Healy from the Gap of Dunloe, sang his brother's selfpenned song 'Christmas Without You (Candle on the Window)' just weeks before he passed away unexpectedly in an accident on Ross Road. However, his eldest brother, Jack Patrick Healy, only recently heard the video existed and decided to create a duet of them singing together to fulfil a promise they made to record it. Thomas' beautiful tones are mixed with Jack's and it has since been released online for free. "Myself and Thomas made a deal that we would record it together," Jack, who has been living in London for the last three years, told the Killarney Advertiser. "However, because of COVID it never happened." In 2009 Jack wrote the song after being "thrown out" of maths class one day in the Intermediate School in Killorglin. He was aged 15, the same age Thomas would have turned this December 27.

Four arrests following "unruly behaviour" on Saturday night

DUET: Jack Patrick Healy, pictured with his little brother Thomas who sadly died in a road accident in July, has recorded a duet of them singing a Christmas song together.

"I was sitting outside in the hallway and I was writing chords and the lyrics were just coming to me. I was listening to Christmas songs and they're all happy but not everyone is happy at Christmas time, and thinking of my mother who has a tradition of the candle in the window at Christmas." Himself and Thomas sang the song each year in Sol y Sombra in Killorglin in aid of the local hospice branch but sadly never got the chance to get to the studio together. Seven weeks ago Jack received a message from one of Thomas' friends say-

ing there was a video he needed to see. There, he saw Thomas singing his song which is especially poignant given how close it's getting to Christmas. Then Jack decided to keep their promise and using modern music technology recorded their voices together as a duet in the most amazing and special way. "I listened to it and I said I have got to do something with it," Jack said. "He had his own way of singing and it's lovely. I took his voice and my voice and put it together. I'm very proud of it, and it's a lot of healing for mom and dad [Julie and Ger]." And the song is not for sale, he added. "I'm not selling it. It's up online for people to listen to. If it can give one family a bit strength I've given something from myself and Thomas." To listen to the special duet go to Facebook: Jack Patrick Healy.

Gardai in Killarney had extra resources on the streets of the town centre in anticipation of large gatherings as two major events – the Killarney Historic Rally and the first Christmas in Killarney Parade - took place on Saturday. Four arrests were made late on Saturday night and early on Sunday morning after large crowds spilled out onto the streets close to 12 midnight as a result of new licensing laws brought in last week to curb the spread of COVID-19. Sergeant Dermot O’Connell, who was on duty in the College St and the Glebe car park area, described it as “unruly behaviour” and confirmed there were four arrests made. “The important thing is there were no serious assaults,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “We had extra resources deployed in the town centre. The whole thing lasted no more than an hour – huge crowds exited [bars and clubs] at the same time.” The most serious incident under investigation by Gardai is the criminal damage to a car as it exited the Glebe car park. Video footage, shared on social media channels this week, shows a large crowd rocking and shaking the car. A rear window was smashed in the car and its rear boot door spoiler was ripped off in the incident.

Food appeal to help families in need | By Michelle Crean Families in need in the Killarney area will be supported again this festive season thanks to kind-hearted volunteers who have launched their annual Christmas fundraiser. Killarney Lions Club Christmas Food Appeal, which has been running locally for over 40 years, began on Wednesday and will run until December 18. And the volunteers are once again hoping for the public's support as they prepare hampers to deliver in the town and surrounds over the coming weeks.

“It’s been another very tough year for many people because of the pandemic so our Christmas Food Appeal is more important than ever,” Killarney Lions Club President, John Fuller, said. “Even with the restrictions last year’s appeal was very successful thanks to the generosity of the people of Killarney, so we are hoping everyone can support again this year.” Through its members Killarney Lions Club assists various groups and individuals in and around the community. Lions do this through voluntary activities, fundraising and by holding various types of events in

support of a great many local causes. Last year, for the first time in four decades, the group had to make a major change by going online due to the pandemic. Yesterday (Thursday), local students in St Brendan's College gave their support by

taking part in a No Uniform Day. And it's hoped that the annual street collection will resume later this month to help offset the cost of food for the hampers. "If the restrictions allow it, we do have a street collection planned for December 17," he added.

SADNESS: There was a great sense of sadness this week with the passing of Seamus O’Shea of Jack C’s Bar on High Street.

LEGENDARY: Seamus O’Shea on the day he took over Jack C’s in 1970

Sadness at passing of legendary publican The family of the late Seamus O’Shea of Jack C’s Bar on High Street have thanked the people of Killarney for the support they have received following his sad passing on Sunday night. | By Sean Moriarty The legendary and popular publican passed away on Sunday just four days after his 86th birthday. The pub was opened by his family in 1901 and is still run by his wife Joan and son John C. “We have been hearing great stories and recollections every day,” John C said. “We are just taking them all in. Thanks to the

people of Killarney, Dr Crokes GAA Club and local publicans who provided a guard of honour and the staff of Killarney Nursing Home.” While best known for his love of the GAA, his interests were widespread. A champion snooker player, he twice won the Bishop Moynihan Cup (the county championship for snooker) in the 1960s. He was also a regular contender in the legendary Pub Quiz leagues of the 1980s

and up to very recently the only two programmes that he would allow to be shown on his pub’s television were championship snooker matches and ‘Who Wants to be a Millionaire’. Old school to the core, his early education days as a student at St Brendan’s College saw him learn Greek, Latin and Maths through Irish. In his early working days he lived and worked in Coventry and became a lifelong fan of the city’s soccer team. One of his proudest moments was being present in Wembley Stadium in London in 1987 when ‘The Blues’ won the FA Cup Final. John Sillett, who guided the club to FA

Cup victory in 1987, died on Wednesday of this week – two of the world’s greatest Coventry FC supporters reunited. Seamus was a proud Dr Crokes man and his eulogy was read at St Mary’s Cathedral by Fr Jim Lenihan – a proud Legion man. “He would have knocked a kick out of that,” John added. Born above the High St pub in 1935, apart from his years in Coventry, Seamus never lived anywhere else. “When we were making arrangements with Mackey’s [O’Shea’s Funeral Directors], they asked that question and there was no answer – he was born over the pub and he lived nowhere else.” Seamus passed away peacefully in the company of his loving family on Sunday night. He is survived and sadly missed by his beloved wife Joan (King), son John C and and daughter Brigitte, son-in-law Richard Whelan, grandchildren James and Ellie Kate, his sisters Marion (O'Riordan, Millstreet) and Eileen, and sister-in-law Noreen (Kearney).

Johnny’s star shines brightly this Christmas The feature star at the top of the spectacular Tree of Light in Killarney takes on an extra special meaning this Christmas as it is dedicated to the memory of a young man who was much loved and is very fondly remembered in the town. Johnny Hickey was a dedicated volunteer with the Christmas in Killarney Festival every year and he demonstrated huge commitment to all aspects of the seasonal celebration, helping out in any way he could at any time of the day or night. Johnny, who passed away suddenly on April 24 last, at the age of 37, was one of the event’s most dedicated volunteers and, in addition to driving one of the spectacular floats in the weekly parades, he was always willing to lend a hand when preparing for the festival and help-

ing with the clean-up and dismantling duties afterwards. Johnny, from Riverside Drive was married to Jennifer with three young children, Alyson, Laura and Conor. His family joined Mayor of Killarney, Cllr Marie Moloney, and Christmas in Killarney Chairman Niall Kelleher, to officially switch on the Tree of Light in the grounds of St Mary’s Cathedral following 6.15pm Mass on Wednesday. “Johnny was a very dedicated volunteer every year and we really appreciated his goodwill, his good humour and the cando approach he always displayed,” said Christmas in Killarney Chairman Niall Kelleher. “Johnny was always there, always reliable, totally dependable and he was always willing to assist behind the scenes. Dedicating the star at the top of the tree

to his memory is our small way of remembering such a very special person,” he added. Killarney Parish Administrator, Fr Kieran O’Brien, led a special prayer ceremony for the switching on of the tree and he described it as a very special night for the parish. “We pray that it will offer light and hope to those who visit the church and visit the parish during Christmas,” he said. Over 4,500 twinkling bulbs adorn the magnificent 100ft Californian Redwood tree this year but the collective eye of the public will constantly be drawn to the sparkling star at the top – Johnny’s star – which will remind everybody who knew him of a very special and caring person. Johnny Hickey might have passed on – but his spirit will live on in the town he loved so well.

IN MEMORY: A feature star at the top of the spectacular Tree of Light in town has been dedicated to the memory of volunteer Johnny Hickey.

Changing of the guard for the Legion Ladies There is a changing of the guard at the top table of the Killarney Legion Ladies Club after this week’s AGM.

LETTERS: Santa is asking all the boys and girls to post their letters in the special green postbox on College St.

Time to get your Santa letters posted!

We hope you have your Christmas letter written - and checked it twice - because Santa is waiting for it to be posted! And thanks to the Christmas in Killarney committee it's now so much easier to get it to him with the special Santa post box on College St. just outside Lana. His elves will collect the post every night at midnight and bring them straight to the North Pole. After taking part in the magical parade in town on Saturday evening, Santa spoke to the Killarney Advertiser and said he is so excited to deliver the toys later this month.

"Season’s Greetings to everyone," Santa said. "I would like to remind all the boys and girls in Killarney and Kerry to write and post their letters to me as soon as possible. They can use the green post box on College St and my elves will collect the letters every night when everyone is asleep! I can't wait to get in my sleigh and deliver all the fantastic presents on Christmas Eve. Remember, be good, the elves are watching!"

Ted Healy, an underage coach for the past 11 years, has been voted in as chairperson for the coming season, taking over from Selina Looney who vacates the post. "It is a great honour for me to take the helm of the Legion Ladies, we have a great club and a particularly strong ladies club, and I can assure everyone that I will give it my absolute all,” Ted said. Ted has been heavily involved with the club over the years from playing at all grades to managing and coaching juvenile teams (both boys and girls) and coordinating the Legion Underage Academy for the past number of years. “It is a great time to take the lead of our ladies club after the recent change in our club constitution which resulted in us being one of the first clubs in the country to adopt a 'One Club' approach. Our senior ladies are going from strength to strength having won the Donal Curtain Cup earlier this year and I see no reason why we cannot push on from that and achieve even greater things," he added. “Our underage structures have ensured we have strong numbers in all juvenile grades and more importantly that we

provide a fun sporting environment for all our young ladies in which to thrive. We are always looking for new recruits at all grades, so for any young aspiring ladies footballers looking to join an innovative progressive club, feel free to contact us.” Ted thanked the outgoing chairperson Selina Looney for her hard work and wished her the very best in her future roles. Also appointed on the night were Mike Doody as vice chair (reappointed) and Oonagh Moynihan as secretary.

No 2021 return for Killarney on Ice | By Michelle Crean Fans of the ice will be disappointed to hear that Killarney on Ice will not return for a second year.

FLIGHT OF FANCY: One of the white doves released at the Rentokil Initial Killarney Historic Rally ceremonial start on Friday night discovered a comfortable landing spot on the head of local MEP Sean Kelly much to the amusement of the onlooking Michael O'Mahoney (Rentokil Initial) and Deputy Danny Healy-Rae. “I think he is looking for a lift to Brussels,” quipped the MEP, to the amusement of the many spectators gathered to watch the event. Photo: Eamonn Keogh

TOP TABLE: Ted Healy is the new chairman of Killarney Legion Ladies Club.

Following its huge popularity year on year since returning to Killarney in 2015, the promoters of Killarney on Ice are disappointed to confirm that they are unable to operate again this year. Rising case numbers, uncertain COVID-19 restrictions, and insurance challenges have been the main drivers behind the decision not to open, according to the company. As Kerry’s only festive ice rink, the facility has brought much fun and life to the town over the years, attracting thousands of people from all over the county,

and indeed the whole country, with many families coming to stay overnight in Killarney and enjoying all that this great town has to offer. As well as friends and families coming to skate, schools, youth clubs, sports teams and employees of local companies use the group booking discount rate to plan sessions on the ice, and Killarney on Ice would like to thank them all for their continuing loyalty. “We sincerely hope to be back better and stronger in 2022, and we look forward to welcoming all of our valued customers," Tim O’Donoghue, the promoter of the rink, told the Killarney Advertiser. "In the meantime, we wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.”

Marie Meets

Well-known and much loved photographer Marie Carroll-O’Sullivan chats to locals about their news, views and accomplishments in her monthly column ‘Marie Meets’.

Charlie Foley’s is Killarney’s oldest family run public house but will have to wait a little while longer to enjoy official celebrations. In the meantime, Colm and his staff will continue to provide an ever changing high standard of service to Killarney locals and tourists for the foreseeable future.

125 years serving pints on New Street

I visited in the morning time and getting left in the side door out of hours was a novelty in itself! It was evident the magic Christmas fairy Norma O’Donoghue had visited as the bar was twinkling for the festive season ahead, whatever COVID restrictions might bring. “I can’t take any credit, Norma is fantastic at what she does,” Colm Foley told me.

HISTORY

In November 1896, Charlie Foley and his wife Ellen, on returning from Liverpool back home to Kerry, purchased 101 New Street from the estate of Lord Kenmare, a ‘local bar’ that still proudly bears the Foley name over the door. Ireland of that time was a place of political and social turmoil, rebellion from the old order, growth in industry and expansion of tourism and communications. This was the birth of what became known as Foley's of New Street. Charlie and Ellen were the opening Foley chapter. Charlie Junior soon stepped into his father’s shoes as master of the house, having married Noreen Lyne of the famous Kerry footballing family, together they continued the operation of the public house and grocery and raised their own young family. These times were of an infant country, fresh from the troubles of 1916, the Civil War, birth of a new republic, and a third generation of Foley's began their lives in 101 New Street. Tragedy struck the family with the sudden death of Charles, the eldest son of Charlie and Noreen. Eileen, their next eldest child, returned from nursing in Cork to help with the running of the family business. “Sure I never had the grá to run a pub Marie but it came naturally to me,” Eileen said. Eileen went on to marry Colm Foley from Killorglin. The birth of their first

125 YEARS: Colm and Eileen Foley pictured in Charlie Foley’s which is celebrating 125 years in business on New Street. Photo: Marie Carroll-O'Sullivan

born coincided with a change of direction for Foley's. The old ways of combining grocery with public house was coming to an end, and Eileen and Colm lead the change. Charlie, Eileen’s father, passed away in 1984. Together, along with rearing a young family, Eileen and Colm moved with the times and brought 101 New Street forward to cater for a growing Killarney town and more discerning customer. Unfortunately Eileen’s husband Colm passed away tragically in 2003. With a young family to rear she also kept the doors of Charlie Foley's open to the public. Eileen’s son, Colm Foley, took on the challenge at the age of 17 to continue what his great-grandparents began, and it has continued seamlessly through the generations. “I ran the pub under the watchful eye of my mother, bringing in local DJs like Kevin Sul and DJ Gaz attracting a younger clientele, but sustaining an atmosphere

for our long-term customers also. A new era with an older feel," Colm added. “The plan was to celebrate this year, 125 years at Foley’s, but COVID has played havoc with many celebrations across the board. On making my initial enquiries about our 125 year celebrations, I knew that COVID would curtail my imagined festivities. I didn't think Mass in the bar with my family would be too much of a hurdle, but as it turns out Fr Kieran was unavailable regardless of COVID as Austin Stacks are due to play Kerin O'Rahillys in the county final on Sunday," Colm joked.

ADAPTING TO CHANGING TIMES

“Overall Colm, how has adapting to COVID over the past 20 months been?" I asked. “It was a trying time and serious uncertainty but everyone is the same. Over the past 125 years Foley’s has survived the Spanish Flu, the Civil War, two World Wars and the War of Independence and

it’s not going to sink on my watch! Our staff, Gerry, Samantha and Courtney, suggested we operate Foley’s like they used to as a team in New York. A system was put in place and it’s worked wonderfully, as well as we can do in COVID times. I am lucky to have great staff and great customers. We continue to welcome locals and tourists alike to Foley’s in a safe but atmospheric environment. We are thankful to have welcomed back live music with Donal Lucey and Cathal Flaherty in recent months which is great.” I commented on the many photographs throughout the entire bar which are seeping in history, smiles and atmosphere within the Foley family and their customers, local legends and special occasions at the pub. An heirloom of memories, character and authenticity is not something that can be bought. It’s no wonder Foley’s on New Street has been a popular place to socialise at for the past 125 years.

Schools collaborate to support Kerry charity | By Michelle Crean Schools are once again working together to do something positive for one deserving local charity whilst remembering a very special person. Seven schools including Holy Cross Mercy, Killarney Community College, Presentation Monastery, St Brigid’s Secondary, St Brendan’s College, St Francis Special School and St Oliver’s have come together to raise funds for the Kerry Hospice Foundation (KHF) by holding a Christmas Jumper Day on Friday, December 17. The multi-school act of charity, which began three years ago, will see staff, students and national school pupils wearing their best festive jumpers and making a donation to the charity. This year’s fundraiser is in memory of Clare Quinlivan, a much-loved, and sorely missed, member of The Sem's school community who passed away just a few months ago, explained teacher Elaine Moynihan. She was also a past employ-

ee of St Brigid’s. "This fundraiser is in her memory this year," Elaine told the Killarney Advertiser. "Clare was the school accountant and she would have had role in our two previous fundraisers. Clare loved The Sem and everybody loved Clare. It felt right that our love for Clare was commemorated this year through this fundraiser." She added that each year they change the charity, but felt it was right to support the KHF as Clare and her family, her husband Con, son Andrew who is a past Sem student, and daughter Lauren a former St Brigid's student, received wonderful support from them. Pat Doolan from KHF visited the students and explained that KHF costs over €10,000 a week to run. And Elaine added that what began as a local fundraiser with a few schools close to the The Sem involved, has now grown to seven with other schools from the town and beyond. "Last year we raised €5,500 so we're hoping to top that this year."

I chose four out of what I wrote to do an EP which includes 'Christmas Bells', 'Winter', 'Heartbreak at Christmas', and 'Home for Christmas'." She added that she is delighted and grateful to be one of the recipients of the 2021 Eamonn Kelly Bursary Awards from the Kerry Arts Council, which funded 'Christmas Bells'. Soroptimists fundraising efforts not "hampered" by COVID-19 COVID didn't "hamper" their efforts this year as members of the Killarney Soroptimist Club came together and gave generously to charity. | By Michelle Crean Members of the group couldn't hold normal meetings this year due to the ongoing restrictions but pulled together to continue supporting a women's aid countywide service. Along with family and friends they created Christmas hampers for the third year running and donated them to the ADAPT Centre in Tralee on Tuesday. There, they presented them to Catherine Casey, who is the Manager of ADAPT Women's Refuge Centre. “It is wonderful to be in a position to donate these Christmas hampers to ADAPT once again this year," Killarney Soroptimist Club President, Teresa Irwin, said. "Due to COVID and not being able to hold normal club meetings we were unsure what we could manage. We are thrilled with the response since we decided to go ahead and amazed at the generosity and the number of hampers. We wish to thank all those that donated.

Hopefully the residents of ADAPT will enjoy them.” Catherine said that they were once again very grateful to all the members of the Killarney Soroptimist Club. "We recognise that there is a lot of organising and work done by the Club President Teresa Irwin and all the members in collecting and putting the hampers together. It is heartwarming to see the support and generosity of the club. ADAPT Kerry and the Killarney Soroptimists have built a very good relationship over the last number of years and they have lead many campaigns to highlight our service in the Killarney area, including taking part in the ‘Safe Homes, Safe Communities’ initiatives. There is no doubt that their work raises awareness of our service and has contributed to many more women making contact with us for support by phone, through our outreach service and availing of refuge." Students engineering skills put to the test | By Michelle Crean Entering a science competition was "plane sailing" for three Transition Year students who won a prize in MTU recently.

PLANE SAILING: St Brendan’s College students Oisin Dineen (back), Diarmuid O’Connor and Mark Sheehan, flying their aeroplane which they made from recycled materials. Also pictured are Sean Coffey (Principal) and Eimear Buckley (Teacher). Photo: Michelle Cooper Galvin

Oisin Dineen, Diarmuid O’Connor and Mark Sheehan from St Brendan’s College entered the Rethinking Engineering Education in Ireland (REEdI) at Munster Technological University (MTU) during Science Week. Their brief was to build a model aeroplane from scratch using recycled materials - but they had to put their engineering skills to the test and make it fly!

And after a number of attempts they managed to get it going, and their successful entry saw them each receive a €100 One4all voucher and €500 for the school's science department. "The project was to design an areoplane that could fly," Eimear Buckley, their TY Coordinator, told the Killarney Advertiser. "The made three different designs and this one worked out the best entry as the back of it was wider than the front. It's made using recycable materials, timber and paper, and the lads used a timber frame. They worked really hard on it and as TY coordinator, and the school, we are very proud of them."

Christmas in Killarney has truly begun as excited children and their families gathered on Saturday night for a colourful display for the town's first festive parades and switching on the festive lights. Families lined the streets to catch a glimpse of the man of the moment and were wowed by the wonder and colour on display. Santa Claus - who was being cautious and wore a red face mask - arrived in style with his all new specially engineered reindeer sleigh. A new route and a new float were added this year. The parade left Fitzgerald Stadium at 6pm and it proceeded along Lewis Road, College Street, Plunkett Street, Main Street and High Street. After last year's parade was cancelled due to COVID, the excitement was palpable as children

finally had a chance to catch a glimpse of the man himself who took time out of his busy schedule to visit before returning to his busy toy room and elves to finalise his plans to deliver the presents on time. Local dancer Dave Rea had great fun dancing in the streets with the stars of the show, the fantastic parade characters, and the event was beautifully captured by local photographer Valerie O'Sullivan. Don't worry though, Santa has promised a number of return visits again before the big day arrives on December 25! Photos: Valerie O’Sullivan

Sinead is queen of the court | By Con Dennehy With a mix of excitement, drama and impressive solo performances on offer, the Spa/Killarney Handball Tournament on Monday night showcased the best of upcoming talent in the sport.

GIVING HOPE: Senior Infants from Faha National School, Killarney pictured with some of the boxes of gifts for the Team Hope Appeal.

Shoebox appeal is biggest yet for Faha kids

It's no wonder Faha pupils have a big smile on their faces as this year's Team Hope Shoebox Appeal is their biggest yet! | By Michelle Crean The children happily packed and wrapped 140 shoeboxes which will be sent to children in need throughout the world. The school has been doing the Team Hope Shoebox Appeal for approximately six years when parent, Margaret Scully, initially contacted one of the SNAs, Delia O' Shea, wondering if they'd be interested in taking part. Since then the appeal has been wholeheartedly supported by the pupils, staff and extended Faha NS community. "This year has been the biggest yet with 140 shoeboxes collected and many more donations online," Jerry Fitzgerald, Principal of Faha NS, said. "It is a learning experience for the children to realise that there are children just like themselves who may not be so fortunate and they really enjoy being given the opportunity to help out. They have great

suggestions as to what to put in the shoeboxes and really put a lot of thought into it. The boxes are wrapped in Christmas paper which is also very exciting both for the children doing the wrapping as well for the children receiving the boxes." However, he added that last year the COVID-19 pandemic brought about big changes and the physical shoeboxes were not collected. "Instead the children were able to do virtual shoeboxes or donate money. This cloud had a silver lining as this year people have both options and it makes it easier than ever to donate. The shoebox appeal always marks the start of Christmas at Faha NS and we are delighted to be able to help out. We are already looking to smash our record next year! Thanks to everyone who donated. The staff and students of Faha NS would like to wish everyone a Happy Christmas and a safe New Year 2022."

Competitions for Beginners and Advanced players at the magnificent Spa GAA facility has ensured the long term success of the sport in the greater Killarney region. One of the most impressive performances on the night was in the Beginners Category where local star Sinead Moriarty secured a number of electrifying victories to win the overall title. “This was a very competitive competition. In the opening games Neill Horgan was defeated by Rosin King from Glenbeigh 13-15 with Sinead Moriarty getting the better of exchanges with Bríd Horgan (Spa) 15-8. In the other game Niamh Faulds from Glenflesk lost to Elena O’Donoghue (Spa) 15-10 despite a

very brave effort from Niamh,” said Eoin O’Donoghue, secretary of Spa Killarney Handball Club. In the semi-finals Sheila Kelliher lost to Elena O’Donoghue (Spa) 15-11 with Sinead Moriarty defeating Rosin King 1512. “In a pulsating final Sinead saw off the dogged challenge of Elena O’Donoghue 15-11. While Sinead dominated this game, she looked in control and played a brilliant tournament throughout and was a deserving overall winner.” In the Advanced category there were wins for Evan Enright and Eoin O’Donoghue in the opening games. In the quarter finals Even Enright saw off the challenge of Brendan O’Donoghue 15-8 while Eoghan Daly defeated Eoin O’Donoghue 15-11, Aoife Walsh (Currow) defeated Maggie Quirke (Glenbeigh) 15-7 and Brian McEvoy beat Michael Clifford 15-6. Semi-final success for Evan Enright and Eoghan Daly saw them battle it out in a pulsating final with Daly taking the title on a 15-12 scoreline.

Michael clocks up over 136 miles for charity | By Michelle Crean The plan was to walk 60 miles in a month for charity - but one Rathmore man was so keen to raise the funds that he managed to clock up 136.72! Michael O’Mahony, Kerry PPN Strategic Policy Committee representative and PRO of East Kerry GAA and Rathmore County Council, took on the '60 Miles for Missions' challenge for the Irish Community Air Ambulance (ICAA) in September, which provides life-saving support all over the country including Kerry. In the past Michael was behind setting up

a similar air ambulance with a group of Kerry people but unfortunately after talks with the then Minister for Health James Reilly, it never took off. Michael chose the ICAA charity as funding is now more vital than ever to keep the service in the air. He made the donation at the ICAA's headquarters Rathcoole County Cork recently. "l was delighted to hand over a cheque for €3,120 to Donie Lucey of Community Air Ambulance," he said. "Your support is very much appreciated for this cause," he added, as he thanked the public for their donations.

LATE LATE DATE: Katie O’Donoghue’s book ‘The Little Squirrel Who Worried’ was featured on the Late Late Toy Show on Friday night.

Local author’s debut book makes Late Late Toy Show

Killarney art psychotherapist Katie O’Donoghue was delighted to spot her first children’s book on last Friday’s Late Late Toy Show!

DONATION: Rathmore's Michael O’Mahony took on the '60 Miles for Missions' challenge for the Irish Community Air Ambulance (ICAA) and has donated over €3,000 to the life-saving service.

'The Little Squirrel Who Worried' was written and illustrated by Katie, and published by Gill Books in July. With almost every eye in Ireland on the Toy Show every year, children’s authors, illustrators and publishers compete for a much-coveted spot on the set. Aware that her book had been sent to Ryan, but not having heard anything from RTÉ, Katie was thrilled to see it in a prominent position. It was a wonderful surprise to discover 'The Little Squirrel Who Worried' had been placed in the front row of the book corner. There, it had a little chair of its own and was even embraced by a cuddly toy. It was visible many times over the

course of the evening, particularly during the book discussion, an incredibly proud moment for first-time author Katie. “I have to admit, when I saw 'The Little Squirrel Who Worried' cradled in the teddy’s arms, I may have jumped up and down with excitement,” Katie told the Killarney Advertiser. What began as a lockdown project while Katie was living in London and missing her family in Kerry, is providing comfort to children around the world. Using a gentle story with gorgeous illustrations, Little Squirrel and his forest friends teach young people a variety of simple coping techniques. "These skills will benefit children their entire lives and the book is even helpful for adults who are prone to worrying and overthinking," she added.

In August this year, Tricel began the installation phase of Ireland's largest combined Heat Pump and Solar PV system to date at their Killarney facility. The

project was partially funded by SEAI. "We worked closely with Enerpower on the installations who, from the outset, had a very clear understanding of our requirements and have shown commitment and reliability in their service," David Kaneswaran from Tricel said. After a great fight Matthew Morris made it into the semi-finals. Ewelina Downey received two gold medals in Gi and NOGI fights, just two months after her promotion to blue belt. The club's coach, Wilson Da Silva, also competed for the first time as a brown belt, and won gold in the Gi category and silver in NOGI. "The results don't lie," he said. "The hard work, dedication, commitment

and passion pays off. Impossible is nothing, and that's what we are trying to teach our students in Movement & Fitness Club Killarney." Martial Arts helps to fight depression, bulling, obesity, and builds up self esteem and confidence, he explained. "There is no ego, no one is better, we are all the same trying to learn from each other, helping and correcting ourselves so we become better together. Our club is filling up with amazing students from age four up who connect with us by the same passion and love for the sport. If you are looking to change your life come and join our family."

Creative concept wins photo challenge | By Michelle Crean There's nothing like a bit of a creative challenge - and members of a local camera club sure produced some colourful results. In its second competition of the season recently, Killarney Camera Club used the theme of 'Bubbles' for the competition, which attracted 22 entries. And although it may have taken the amateur photographers out of their comfort zone the fun competition produced so many innovative, bubbly, creative and technical entries. Ade Desbrow made it two in a row by winning the Unrestricted Category while Anne Kelly won the Novice Category. “Using a bubble blower in the town park, this image was taken using a 50mm fixed lens in manual mode with an f-stop of 6.3 at 1/400 sec to give me some hope of getting some bubbles in focus," Ade, who explained how he took his ethereal ‘bubbles’ photo, said. "I waited for the breeze to subside rather than chase the bubbles around the park and as I wanted a dark background to emphasise the bubbles this made it a bit easier.”

COLOURFUL: Ade Desbrow's photo 'Bubbles' won in the 'Unrestricted Category' in Killarney Camera Club's recent competition.

The top three in the Unrestricted Category were: 1st Place: Ade Desbrow, 'Bubbles', 179 points Joint 2nd Place was shared by: Nikki Foley, 'There’s a witch at the bottom of my garden', 178 points and Seamus Long, 'Other Worlds', 178 points 3rd Place: Keith Johnson, 'The magic of bubbles', 175 points Check out all the competition entries on www.killarneycamerclub.ie. Toy Show raises over €6m for charity This year's Late Late Toy Show, which took place last Friday night, has been deemed a roaring success after raising €6,601,895 million from viewers watching from 150 countries! An average audience of 1.56 million viewers watched The Lion King themed show on RTÉ One on the night, representing 81% of the available audience. This marks a year-on-year increase on last year’s audience of 1.55 million, which had 79% audience share. An additional 292,000 watched the programme on catch-up TV, including RTÉ One+1 and the Saturday repeat. After a year where children were restricted in play and socialising with their friends, the Hakuna Matata ‘no worries’ philosophy of this year's show was central to the core message in allowing children to roam wild both at home and in studio. Through the generosity and goodwill of the Irish people, The Toy Show Appeal, in its second year raised €6.6 million, marking a total of €13 million of much-needed funds over the course of its two years. Online, Irish viewers stayed connected with home and streamed RTÉ Player from over 150 countries including from all 50 States in the USA and all eight Australian territories. Over 330,000 streams live and on-demand across the weekend,

making it one of the most-watched programmes of 2021. Ed Sheeran and the Toy Show Choir performance was the most-watched clip from the show with viewers bowled over by the show's many young stars. DJ Callum and his hype-man Jackson, Fashionista Abigale and Kellie Harrington's knockout surprise were also massive hits. The Late Late Toy Show with Irish Sign Language (ISL) was available live on Friday night on RTÉ Player and RTÉ News, it has had over 18,000 streams to date with the ISL Late Late Toy Show opening performance of 'Hakuna Matata' and Ed

Sheeran and the Toy Show Choir with ISL both appearing in the Top 5 mostwatched clips on RTÉ Player. "Friday night was an absolute joy to present, and it felt like it was about six or seven minutes long, it just went by so fast as such were the joy that the children brought to everyone in Ireland," host, Ryan Tubridy, said. "We were a country that needed one big magical hug and thanks to the kids all around the country, we got it. I am flabbergasted by the audience share and I am bowled over by the donations made to The Toy Show Appeal.”

Dramatic footage was released by the coastguard showing a team approaching the man by boat, calling out: “We are coming! Just a little bit longer! Hold on tight!” The man was lost in rough seas off Japan en route to the resort island of Yakushima on Saturday afternoon. He was alone on a boat which capsized, but managed to call a colleague on the island to alert him. However, it was a day later before he was found and brought to safety. “He was out in the sea alone for 22 hours. I am amazed by his survival skills,” a coastguard official said. The man did manage to wrap himself in a grey plastic sheet to stay warm, officials said. “It’s a miracle he survived."

Blizzard traps pub customers indoors for three nights A night out in the pub ended up turning into a weekend session after a group of customers were snowed in by a blizzard at the weekend. Customers of The Tan Hill Inn in the Yorkshire Dales - Britain’s highest altitude pub which sits 528 metres above sea level - headed to see an Oasis tribute band on Friday night but only managed to make their way out on Monday after getting trapped inside! However, they were kept entertained by the band 'Noasis', and enjoyed karaoke, movies, and a quiz night to pass the time, as well as appearing on news

worldwide while stuck indoors. Pub manager Nicola Townsend said the 61 people were in good spirits over the weekend. “They did a great gig on Friday night which most people were here for anyway,” she told BBC Breakfast. “They’ve been getting their guitars out and doing some acoustics in different rooms we have here, everyone’s really enjoyed it.” On their Facebook page on Monday, the pub thanked their "wonderful calm patient hard working staff who got through it all". Customers trapped even had a whip around for the staff who looked after

them over the few days. "Our AMAZING guests have had a whip round for all staff who have made their stay fab and totally looked after them. Totally chocked."

Singer Rihanna named Barbados national hero Pop queen Rihanna has this week been named a 'national hero' in Barbados as the island nation celebrates becoming a republic with the removal of the Queen as Head of State. The singer was born in Saint Michael and raised in Bridgetown, before moving to the United States after she was discovered by New York-based music producer Evan Rogers. She is known worldwide for her hits songs 'Umbrella', 'Diamonds'

and 'We Found Love', and has had the honorary title of 'Ambassador for Culture and Youth' in Barbados since 2018. "On behalf of a grateful nation, but an even prouder people, we therefore present to you the designee for national hero for Barbados, ambassador Robyn Rihanna Fenty," Mia Mottley said in front of a jubilant crowd in the capital, Bridgetown. "May you continue to shine like a diamond and bring honour to your nation by your works, by your actions."

Members of the Council in Freemantle, Western Australia, voted to approve proposals tabled by Councillor Adin Lang, that would see felines prohibited from all Council owned areas in a move which they say would "protect wildlife" and "remove the risk of cats being hit by cars" including roads, verges and bushlands. "In the 1970s dogs would roam our streets and I expect roaming cats will also become a thing of the past," the councillor said. "While we have prohibited areas in our natural bushland, cats are still entering. At a minimum our bushland areas need a prohibited area buffer. Many of our native verge gardens, which also act as a wildlife refuge, also need protection from cats." WA Feral Cat Working Group chairman Tom Hatton recently gave a presenta-

tion to the Fremantle Council about why cat owners should keep their pets at home. "There are two good reasons to keep your cat at home," he said. "The pressure that domestic cats that are allowed to roam put on urban wildlife and, secondly, the science that says that domestic cats that are not allowed to roam live much longer and are much healthier. Urban cats kill 30 times more wildlife than adult cats out in the bush."

I want someone to feed my soul, not an “appetiser” that’ll only temporarily satisfy me but on the other hand, I come across a little impatient like I’m shallowly content with rushing things to just have a taste.” 2021 saw JYellowL’s critically acclaimed debut album 2020 D|vision nominated for Irish album of the year 2020 at the RTÉ Choice Music Prize Awards and debuted at number 2 on the official iTunes album charts as well as number 1 in the hip hop category.

Four brands under one roof at Aherns Castleisland Aherns Garage Castleisland is a rarity in Irish motoring as there is nowhere quite like it in the county with four different brands under one roof. WELCOME: Aherns BMW welcome the new full Electric BMW iX3 to Kerry. Pictured from right to left are some of the Aherns BMW team: Paul Ahern, John Cronin, Gordon Lunn and Tony Casey.

It’s like a shopping centre for cars, and while everything is accommodated in their vast Tralee Road complex, a visit there feels like you are stepping into four different showrooms. Car buyers won’t be short on choice there. “We have something for everyone and all under the one roof,” Paul Ahern said.

Ahern’s is one of Ireland’s longest serving Opel dealers and the full range is on view at the family run premises. Highlights include the new Opel Mokka SUV, one of the few cars in Ireland available in full electric and low emission petrol or diesel. A few short metres away sits their Mazda showroom. A highlight here is the brand

new MX-30, Mazda’s first venture into electric cars along with the best selling CX-30 and CX-5 in low emission diesel and petrol. The newest addition to Ahern’s expanding range is SEAT, the new Arona SUV which has had a facelift, and the 2022 Ibiza models have just gone on display in the Spanish section of the showroom.

Aherns BMW is an another arm to the garage. The all new BMW iX3 full electric SUV has recently arrived to Castleisland and the brand new i4 Electric Gran Coupe and IX full electric SUV are expected to go on show this side of Christmas alongside the other BMW models in the range which are now available in plug-in hybrid and low emission petrol and diesel.

New look Bowlers is a one-stop motoring shop Bowlers Garage, no longer tied to a franchise, is in the unique position to source any make or model, new or used, for customers ready to change their car. The Ballycasheen premises, which is a family run business, has undergone a major facelift in recent weeks, with new signage and logos to reflect their new approach to car sales and servicing.

As well as sourcing new and used cars, their service department will look after any make or model making the garage a unique one stop shop for all motoring needs in the locality. “The motor industry is changing as we all know,” Brian Bowler explained. “But we are ready and we look forward to welcoming customers, new and old, into our revamped garage.” Bowlers have also upgraded their website, www.bowlers.ie, and all new and used cars can be viewed online, including detailed videos of what is on offer.

Randles Bros are Kerry’s longest serving dealership Randles Bros is preparing to enter its 101st year of trading. This year was a special one for the Killarney-based firm as the family celebrated its 100th anniversary. The garage business was founded by brothers Con and Thomas Randles, the

grandfather and grand-uncle of current Dealer Principal David Randles. Their first garage was in Kenmare, before operating two premises, including an additional one on the Muckross Rd.

The Killarney branch remains the hub of the business and while the Kenmare arm is no longer operational Randles Bros have operated a Tralee branch for over 20 years.

“2021 was a very special year for us as a family and a business,” said Dealer Principal David Randles. “I want to say thank you all our loyal customers and staff who got us to this milestone. Here is to the next 100 years – 2120!”

Nissan Ariya crossover is a game-changer Randles Bros in Killarney and Tralee are looking forward to welcoming the all-new Nissan Ariya all-electric coupé crossover to their showrooms in the New Year. With the Nissan LEAF firmly established as Ireland’s best-selling Electric Vehicle (EV), Nissan has announced that it is starting a new era for its electric vehicles with the unveiling of the all-new Nissan Ariya electric coupé crossover. The launch will come as welcome news to anyone interested in driving EV with the new Nissan Ariya building on the pioneering EV and crossover expertise that has made both the Nissan LEAF and Nissan Qashqai market leaders in Ireland. The Nissan Ariya all electric coupé crossover is designed for the autonomous age, combining powerful performance, connected technologies and revolution-

ary new EV design as the icon of Nissan’s innovative and electric future. With an all-electric drivetrain, an estimated range of up to 500 kilometres (WLTP) and a lounge-like interior that is packed with advanced technology, the stylish new Nissan Ariya is designed to take the excitement and potential of zero-emission mobility to the next level. It sets a new standard for EVs with five core models combining 63kWh and 87 kWh batteries with two-wheel-drive and all-wheel drive with the unique e-4ORCE powertrain options to meet the needs of a wide range of customers. e-4ORCE is Nissan’s most advanced

all-wheel control technology. Striking a balance between powerful performance and unprecedented control, e-4ORCE is designed to ensure driver and passenger comfort and a feeling of stability. The Nissan Ariya represents the ultimate expression of Nissan Intelligent Mobility, featuring Nissan’s latest safety technologies and driving performance, promising drivers a seamless, intuitive and adaptive experience. It comes with an enhanced version of ProPILOT which is already familiar to many Nissan LEAF drivers, providing hands-on assistance to help drivers stay centred in their lane, navigate stop-andgo motorway traffic and maintain a set vehicle speed and distance to the vehicle ahead. ProPILOT also takes the stress out of parking by helping recognise an open

parking space and guiding the vehicle into it. Driver assistance features also include e-Pedal, which was first introduced in the Nissan LEAF, allowing drivers to launch, accelerate and decelerate down to a stop by using only the accelerator. “The launch of Nissan Ariya marks the start of a new era for Nissan Electric Vehicles and the acceleration of Nissan’s path to electrification. Nissan started the journey to electrification 10 years ago with the mass market LEAF and invented the crossover segment with the launch of the Qashqai in 2007. The Nissan Ariya builds on our brand’s pioneering expertise in EVs and crossovers to better answer the needs of our customers,” Dealer Principal, David Randles, said. The Nissan Ariya electric coupé crossover is available to pre-order at Randles Bros, Tralee and Killarney from January.

Reen’s Rathmore open state-of-the-art showroom Reen’s Garage in Rathmore is the first Peugeot dealership in Ireland to adopt the French make’s new branding and showroom standard. Open for less than a month, the new showroom is a state-of-the-art facility that signifies Peugeot's new worldwide approach to car sales and customer satisfaction. “When you walk in here you can feel the quality,” said Dealer Principal John Reen. The new customer waiting area is one of the most impressive features of the new garage with a café-style waiting room where they stay while their car is being serviced or they are waiting to speak to a car sales person. “Six leather seats and its own coffee making machine,” said John. “No doubt, there is nothing like this anywhere else.” It is a far cry from the humble beginnings he and his brother Vincent experienced when they opened their first garage in 1977. “It was little more than a shed,” he explained. The family run firm took on the Peugeot agency in 1987 and today are one of longest serving Peugeot dealers in Ireland. 46 Kelliher’s Garage recent appointment as the sole Toyota agent for Kerry means that current owners of the Japanese marque have a place to go for parts and repairs, even if the car was bought elsewhere. The family-owned Tralee firm took over the sole agency in October this year. They will honour any Toyota warranty issues and periodical servicing as required. “We are open from 8am every day,” Dealer Principal, Tim Kelliher, said. “We are here to help. If you have a technical issue or need a paid for or a free service, and some services are free these days, we can do it, it does not matter where the car was bought.” Kelliher’s are also expanding their crash repair business. They have a new website, www.kelliherscrashrepair.ie – and can fix any make or model. “We can do everything from a small crash to the more complicated re-alignment jobs,” added Tim. “We work with all the major insurance companies.” As part of their new role as the county’s only Toyota dealer, they held a roadshow at the Gleneagle Hotel recently. “We are very appreciative of the large crowd that came to see us and we are still getting back to everyone that visited us on the day,” he added.

Champion driver visits Murphy Brownes Murphy Brownes Restaurant on High St welcomed some very special guests on the Thursday night before last weekend’s Rentokil Initial Killarney Historic Rally. The event celebrated its 25th anniversary this year and the winner from a quarter of a century ago, John Keatley from County Derry, was back in town. He used the same Porsche 911 that he

drove to victory in 1996 and the organisers, Killarney and District Motor Club cleverly seeded him a number 25 to mark the occasion. Very little had changed in the car – it

is now painted red and not its original white colour. Keatley’s participation in the event was made possible by support from Murphy Brownes and he and his co-driver James McKeefrey were guests of honour there on the same night as the first Dine in Killarney pre-Christmas eating out promotion.

“It was a pleasure to have them, they were two lovely men and we had great fun,” said Murphy Browne co-owner, Deirdre Browne. “We had other rally people in too, they had been with us during previous events.” Keatley and McKeefrey have lost none of their flair over the last 25 years. They won Class B5 on Saturday.

OVER 50 PRE-OWNED CARS TO CHOOSE FROM

INDUSTRY LEADERS: Autopoint sales team John Dillon (Sales Director) and Ken Wheeler (Sales Executive) at their Tralee premises.

Autopoint Motor Group is an industry leader in e-commerce

Autopoint Motor Group is a national multi-award winning independent car dealer based in Tralee that is passionate about the motor business. And not only that, they also believe in going the extra mile for their customer's motoring needs and specialise in selling high quality pre-owned vehicles at competitive prices. Autopoint Motor Group is an industry leader as the first to have an e-commerce website that allows customers to purchase their vehicle of choice online. Once the vehicle has been purchased they offer free nationwide delivery so the whole buying process could not be easier. Their seven day money back guarantee gives the customer peace of mind and reassurance with their purchase. Autopoint Motor Group MD Brian Hanafin founded wesellyourcar.ie in 2014, with the car selling solution a huge success ever since. "At wesellyourcar.ie, we endeavour to provide the quickest, simplest and most hassle-free way possible to sell your car," he said. This allows customers to get the retail value for their car and takes the hassle out of trying to sell it privately. They also offer a free collection service for customers in Kerry, Cork and Limerick.

A wide range of car finance options is also available for its customers as the garage is aligned with several finance companies to ensure the customer gets the best option available to them. For customers that have a low credit rating, they have a number of finance companies that offer car finance to customers while repairing their credit rating at the same time. “This gives customers, who may have had difficulty in the past, an opportunity to have access to affordable finance rates while at the same time repairing their credit rating for their next purchase,” said sales director John Dillon. Autopoint Motor Group prides itself in looking after its customers right throughout the sales process and beyond. “In these challenging times it's more important than ever to make the sales process as seamless and as easy as possible,” Brian added. “I would like to thank all our valued customers from Kerry for their continuous support throughout these changeling times. We look forward to dealing with you again in 2022."

The Hyundai Tucson is the best-selling car in Kerry. So far this year, up to the end of November, 150 versions of the Hyundai Tucson SUV have hit Kerry roads. That is 39 more than this time last year when the Tuscon was also the county’s best selling individual model. The Tralee dealership is celebrating its 22nd anniversary this year but a large proportion of the garage's success can be put down to Killarney men. Three of the staff hail from town, these include Mechanic Jason O’Connor, Sales Executive Liam Shannon, and General Manager Marcus O’Shea from Aghadoe. “Adam’s of Tralee is in the top five Hyundai dealers in the country,” Marcus told the Killarney Advertiser. “Our customer service is one of the main reasons behind that – if you become an Adam’s customer, you tend to stay.” Examples of their customer support include traditional services like collecting and returning cars to customers when an annual check-up or service is due, but it goes beyond that.

The Killarney connection to Kerry’s best-selling car

TOWN FOLK: Killarney men, Liam Shannon and Marcus O'Shea, work at Adams of Tralee.

“If a customer was moving house we would give them a van,” he added. Despite being 30kms away from Killarney, Adam’s of Tralee enjoys great support locally, helped of course by the four staff members who are based here, but

also because of the range of products and services on offer. Hyundai is one of the leading manufacturers of petrol-hybrid or all electric cars. “Many of the hotels in Killarney have bought electric cars from us,” added the

Aghadoe man. “It is important for them – these days when people are checking out a hotel they ask what is the pool like, where is the bar and is there an electric charge point on site? It helps the hotels to say they have an electric car on site."

Škoda has plenty of new offers at Liam Lynch Motors Liam Lynch Motors in Farranfore, Kerry’s main Škoda dealer is taking orders for its 2022 model line-up. Highlights from the Czech Republic manufacturer include the recently launched Škoda Karoq and the new all electric Škoda Enyaq which has been nominated for a very prestigious award. Four years after it first arrived in Ireland,

the popular SUV, the Škoda Karoq has been given a makeover. Improvements include a fresher design, optimised aerodynamics and state-ofthe-art assistance and infotainment systems.

The car is so popular with Škoda customers that only the Škoda Octavia and Škoda Kodiaq have surpassed it sales-wise in Ireland. The Škoda Kodiaq has also received a facelift and the new all electric Škoda Enyaq has been nominated for the prestigious 'European Car of the Year' award. “The Škoda Karoq is key to our brand’s

success. To ensure that this will remain the case, Škoda have re-developed it further. I am confident that this overall package will enable us to continue the Škoda Karoq’s success story,” said the dealership’s marketing manager Noreen Scanlon. Noreen gave customers other reasons to be cheerful too as the ever popular Škoda Scala line is available to purchase with a 0% percent APR finance package. “We are now taking orders for the entire Škoda range for 2022 registration,” she added. “Come and take a look at the all electric Škoda Enyaq – it is a contender for the 'European Car of the Year', and when you see it you will know why!”

HEALTH & FITNESS Advice - By Angela Kerrisk Angela is available for advice and fitness consultations at info@activate.ie • www.activate.ie

Do you have an energy crash in the afternoon? You know that feeling when you’re sitting at your desk and suddenly fatigue washes over you like a tidal wave - you are crashing fast and ready for an afternoon nap. We have all experienced it! It's most likely a result of a number of things, not just that you’re in need of another cup of coffee. There is a natural rhythm or set clock in our bodies, and many people tend to feel a little sleepy in the afternoon. But don't blame it all on your body's internal clock, your body makes you sleepy, but it is your own lifestyle habits that may be causing this energy crash. If you’re not exactly sure of what’s causing this energy slump, pay attention to what time of day it typically occurs. One reason for that afternoon crash is that you are experiencing a dip in blood sugar, generally a result of your cortisol rising too high in the morning due to external factors such as coffee, a carbohydrate-rich breakfast or a carb-heavy lunch, not getting enough sleep the previous night, or being dehydrated. A combination of these puts you… yup, right around that mid-afternoon crash time.

HOW CAN YOU AVOID THIS?

If you're feeling sluggish in the early afternoon, ask yourself these questions:

• Did I eat breakfast? • What did I eat for breakfast? (A cup of coffee doesn't count) • What did I eat for lunch? Eating smaller balanced, more frequent meals and snacks throughout the day, say every three to four hours, may help minimise the spikes and dips in your blood sugar. Balance these with a mix of the different, important macronutrients;

carbs, protein and fat, and note it’s important to include them all throughout the day. This balanced combination will help your blood sugar and energy levels stay steadier after you’ve finished eating. And it should go without saying but eating enough throughout the day will help boost your energy and ability to focus too, so don’t skip meals! Prioritise sleep. Consistently not sleeping enough can lead to significant sleep deprivation. If you get better sleep at night, you’ll be less tired during the day and less likely to experience an afternoon slump. Drink plenty of water. If dehydration is a contributing factor to your afternoon fatigue, make it a habit to keep a reusable bottle of water handy and sip from it regularly. If you’re not exercising regularly, you're more likely to experience lower energy levels throughout the day. Get out at lunchtime for some fresh air and boost your vitamin D. Even if it’s just a walk around the office, movement can help you feel less sleepy. It’s natural for your energy levels to rise and fall throughout the day. A severe dip though, can throw off your entire day. Pay close attention to what time the slump hits and then consider how your lifestyle may be contributing to it. Typically, a change of diet or a better sleep routine can make all the difference. If you find that daily fatigue is severely impacting your ability to concentrate, talk to your doctor to rule out any potential underlying causes. If you would like help to create a more balanced lifestyle and help with nutrition, visit www.activate.ie today and schedule a complimentary nutrition consultation.

Mahonias are incredibly hardy this time of year One plant which is spectacular at this time of year is the Mahonia. Underused, in my opinion, it provides great winter cheer in the form of its bright yellow flowers.

The common name for Mahonia is the Oregon grape as its fruits look like small grapes. These blue/purple fruits are not toxic, though they are better left to the birds who adore them! The flowers, which are long racemes of vibrant yellow, are an absolute boon for any active bees and pollinators. On sunny winter days you can even catch a bumblebee performing the most amazing feats of hovering in order to get a meal. Mahonias are evergreens, with large, spiny leaves. There are over 70 species, but the more common ones are Mahonia media, which can grow into a tall shrub with bright yellow flowers which are highly fragrant. Mahonia aquifolium flowers a bit later, in early spring. Mahonia repens is a softer leaved variety which remains low at about 40cm and is ideal for ground cover, especially in a shady area. One of my favourites is M. eurybracteata ‘Soft Caress’, which has soft, feathery foliage. This plant is ideal in borders, or, at this time of year, really lovely in pots. Mahonias, though bushy, tend to send out large upright shoots which can make the plant suddenly seem very tall and bare. Cutting these shoots every second year will keep your shrub compact and dense as well as encourage flowering. One thing to mind though, when prun-

ing, is to wear something old – when cut it oozes a bright yellow sap, coloured like turmeric, and is difficult to launder. Under planting Mahonias is one way of showing them off, and plants such as hellebores, or winter flowering heathers, will provide a pleasing scene, as well as a buffet for any passing insects. Bergenias, evergreen ferns and brightly coloured grasses are also complimentary. Viburnum davidii is another gorgeous plant for this time of year. It has long, leathery leaves which can reach up to 15cm in length. In the spring it has a fairly unremarkable white flower, which, again, provides a feast for pollinators when pickings are slim. Berries appear on female plants – and these are quite beautiful. Clusters of bright, metallic blue berries are what makes this plant worth having! The berries last for a good four months of the year, eventually being picked off by birds in late winter - though mine are usually picked off by myself for Christmas flower arrangements! These viburnums grow to about one metre in height, though you can clip them to stay lower. They are ideal as a companion plant to the Mahonia, but also provide interest among deciduous plants. They can also be used as a low hedge, or a ground cover plant, as they are naturally dome shaped, and require very little in the way of pruning. Both Viburnums and Mahonias are incredibly hardy, and will tolerate most growing conditions.

education supports Getting into college is a challenge for many students, one which is all the more difficult for anyone who has had their second level education impacted by illness, disability or learning difficulties. The Disability Access Route to Education scheme (DARE) seeks to level the playing field for such students by providing pre and post entry supports when applying to participating Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) through the Central Applications Office (CAO) and is open to school leavers who meet the eligibility criteria and are under the age of 23 as of January 1, 2022. To be deemed eligible for DARE students need to meet the Educational Impact Criteria and the Evidence of Disability Criteria. As part of pre-entry supports the DARE scheme offers reduced points places to eligible students under the following categories - Autistic Spectrum Disorder (including Asperger’s Syndrome), Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD and ADHD), Blind/Vision Impaired, Deaf/ Hard of Hearing, DCD – Dyspraxia, Mental Health Condition, Neurological Condition, Speech & Language Communications Disorder, Significant Ongoing Illness, Physical Disability, Specific Learning Difficulty. To find out more information on the eligibility criteria under each category, see www.accesscollege.ie. The reduction in points for DARE places can vary each year and applicants must still meet the minimum subject specific requirements for their chosen courses.

DEADLINES AND APPLICATION PROCESS

The first step is to apply to the CAO via www.cao.ie, which is now open, by February 1, 2022. Once this is done, DARE applicants have until March 1 to indicate that they wish to be considered for the scheme and to complete Section A of the Supplementary Information Form (SIF) which includes a short personal statement about the impact of the illness, disability or learning difficulty on their education. By March 15, Sections B and C must be completed, signed, stamped and returned to CAO by post. Faxed or emailed documents will not be accepted. This supporting documentation is used to establish whether or not an applicant meets the eligibility criteria for DARE and it is used by the colleges and universities to determine the kinds of supports that might be needed on entry to college. Section B, the Educational Impact Statement (EIS) must be completed by the school, indicating how the illness, disability or learning difficulty has impacted on the second level

experience of the applicant. Section C looks for the provision of Evidence of Disability Documentation from the appropriate professional and can be provided in a number of ways – an existing report from the appropriate professional or a completed Evidence of Disability Form 2022 which can be downloaded from www.cao.ie or www.accesscollege.ie. In addition, some evidence may be required to have been completed in a particular timeframe. All deadlines are strict and non-negotiable so it is important to start applications well in advance of the final dates, to avoid unnecessary stress.

BENEFITS

As well as reduced points, there are lots of other supports offered to students who qualify for DARE and may include some of the following: orientation programmes, learning support, assistive technology, library support, exam accommodations, educational support worker and academic tuition. The provision of such supports seeks to level the playing pitch for entry to and access through higher education by widening opportunities for students who have a significant challenge in terms of their participation, experience and learning in secondary school. Information events on DARE take place in various HEIs throughout the year, so check out college websites and social media for details. On Saturday January 8, 2022 a series of information sessions will take place in HEIs nationally for applicants and parents. For further details on information events and on the DARE scheme itself, as well as contact details for DARE support staff in the various colleges, see www.accesscollege.ie.

The only certainty is uncertainty "History is just one damn thing after another" - Arnold Toynbee Late last week, the emergence of a new COVID-19 variant in South Africa sent shockwaves worldwide, upending what had been a reasonably quiet week for the stock market. On Friday, a steep sell-off left the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq down 2.2% and 3.5%, respectively. This 147th twist in the pandemic tale got me thinking about how much we think we know when really, we know nothing at all. At the start of the year nobody would have predicted that 2020 would have played out the way it did. Very few would have predicted that 2021, with promising vaccines and a return to normality would have represented so little change, but here we are. Everyone loves to pretend like they fully understand what this all means and what will happen next. I get it; who doesn’t love the warm cozy allure of certainty. We all want to exist in a world where we know what lies around the corner.

History is a perpetual stream of mistaken opinions and unpredictable outcomes, but the predictions won’t stop. People will cast their views with deluded certainty about what to expect next by extrapolating the current conditions out into the future, but the current conditions aren’t a constant, and the game is always changing. Unfortunately, the reality is, nobody knows what’s next, and the sooner you can discard any naive sense of conviction, the easier it will be in both life and investing. While this statement may seem morbid on the surface, loosening our grip on our need for certainty can be liberating. Remember, while it is important to have expectations and predictions, predictions are not fact, and you will be wrong. Not always, but you will be wrong, so try not to be overly tethered to your current version of the truth.

LEAN INTO THE UNCERTAINTY

Accepting that nothing is certain can

often be cast as an impotent statement in a world obsessed with knowing all the answers. In an industry where uncertainty is the ultimate enemy, telling investors to submit to it is often met with disdain, but accepting the inevitability of uncertainty is so important if you want to avoid going stir crazy as you try and hold for the long term. Of course, discarding uncertainty is easier said than done. Worrying about factors beyond our control is an inherent part of the human condition. However, simply being aware that the game is not predictable and nobody truly knows the final outcome may help you reduce your craving for certainty.

MY ADVICE

Stop reaching for perfection in a world of constant uncertainty. Stop obsessing about making the right decision one hundred percent of the time. Even the best investors in history have had their fair share of howlers. Ultimately you just need to be right more often than you are wrong.

Michael O’Connor CFA is an investment consultant based in the Cayman Islands with a decade of experience within the financial industry.

THE SOLUTION

Create an investment portfolio centred around what you believe to be the most probable outcome based on available information and incorporate enough diversification to function as a buffer. In a world where anything is possible, all you can do is focus on what is most probable, allow for a margin of error to support you when your assumed outcomes don’t play out and simply let go of the rest.

Council to assist Beaufort playground plans

Kerry County Council said that it will assist with plans to get a playground up and running in Beaufort. At a recent Council meeting, Cllr Patrick Connor-Scarteen asked for "an update on progress to provide a playground for Beaufort". The Council said that they had "examined all possibilities with respect to the provision of a playground within Beaufort Village". "Three sites were initially examined and failed on suitability criteria (traffic, parking, size, accessibility, open supervision)," the Council said in their reply. "There are no Council lands available for such a facility. The Council 'Ag Spraoi' Play Policy firmly mandates community groups with playground development and not the Council. The Council will assist any Community Group in assessing a site for suitability and advise further on the development process from planning, grant applications, construction supervision. Further, the Council will maintain and insure any compliant finished facility."

Town Centre, Killarney, Co. Noah won silver and Lexie bronze, both represented Kerry in the U10 backstroke.

By Nicky Barry I take note of this special tree, each day as I ride out, On my daily spin round Muckross, and never am in doubt, That this terrain is magical, with mountains, lakes and trees, There in all their glory, in four seasons of the year. This chestnut tree stands proudly, across from Muckross Abbey, Just inside the railings, where the jarveys canter by. In winter it is stark and bare, devoid of foliage, But with the spring it comes to life, with little shoots of leaves. These emerge from little buds, which miraculously appear, Bringing signs of rebirth, at the same time every year. It is the first tree in the park, to burst into life, After a long winter, deprived of warmth and light. The leaves then sprout white blossoms, as summer comes along, And as the days and weeks pass by, they abound in throngs. The white blossom baubles, then turn emerald green, Like little spiky globules, with white chestnuts within. In time the embryos mature, and become polished brown, Then burst out of their spiky shells, to fall down on the ground. As they nestle in their hundreds, at the roots of the tree, The old tree with its job well done, then sheds its autumn leaves.

Mother

Softly the leaves of memory fall Gently I bend to gather them all Unseen, unheard, you are always near So missed, so loved, so very dear.

God looked around his garden and saw an empty space He then looked down upon the earth and saw your tired face. He put his arms around you and raised you up to rest His garden must be beautiful because he only takes the best. He knew you were in pain and that a cure was not to be So he closed your weary eyelids and whispered “come to me”. With tearful eyes we watched you and saw you slip away And though we loved you dearly we knew you could not stay.

I miss you now, my heart is sore As time goes by I miss you more Your loving smile, your precious face No-one else can fill that space. In secret I weep, in silence I cry As each lonely hour and day passes by There’s only thought that eases my pain And it’s knowing someday I’ll see you again. Beautiful memories treasured forever Of the love and happiness we shared together, your presence I miss your memory I treasure Loving you always, forgetting you never.

It broke our hearts to lose you but you did not go alone For part of us went with you on the day God called you home.

Your loving husband Tim.

Always remembered by your loving son Tom and daughter-in-law Sheila. XXX *** Grandmother

We also thank those who sent mass cards, perpetual enrolments, flowers and not forgetting the many beautiful letters we received. We will not forget the kindness and generosity of so many, all those who brought food and refreshments. We extend our sincere gratitude to all those who lined the roads enroute to the church (due to Covid restrictions) and afterward to the graveyard in Killaha. To lose you was a bitter wrench, The pain cut to my core, I cried until my tears ran out, And then I cried some more. This wouldn’t be your wish for me, That I’d be forever sad, So I try to remind myself, Of the happy times we had. I know I can’t be with you now, And you can’t be with me, But safe inside my heart you’ll stay, That’s where you’ll always be. Sadly, missed and forever in our hearts Rose and Ashley

KERRY SENIOR CLUB RELEGATION PLAYOFF

_________________________________________________________________________________________

Killarney Legion v Dr Crokes December 5 at 12 noon

| By Adam Moynihan

Fitzgerald Stadium It’s county final weekend. Tralee is awash with blue and black and amber. Stack Park will be packed to the rafters for Sunday’s decider between Kerins O’Rahillys and Austin Stacks as two fierce rivals meet in one of the biggest games the county’s capital has witnessed in decades. Based on what we have seen from both teams in this year’s championship, it promises to be a fascinating encounter. But as far as Killarney folk are concerned, that’s all small potatoes. Forget about Rahillys-Stacks. Forget about Covid. Forget about Christmas. There is only one topic up for discussion this week: Legion versus Crokes in the relegation playoff. Barring a draw (which will result in a replay) one of the town’s biggest clubs will lose their senior status at lunchtime on Sunday. For Legion, demotion would be a major disappointment. Ever since a talented

crop of players that included James O’Donoghue, Jonathan Lyne, Brian Kelly and Podge O’Connor came of age, the Derreen outfit have harboured dreams of winning Kerry football’s top prize: the County Championship. They came within inches of glory under Peter Keane in 2015, falling to South Kerry after extra time in a replay. Although they haven’t reached a final since, that dream is still there. Relegation would be a significant step in the wrong direction.

ADAM MOYNIHAN

Whoever is defeated on Sunday will lose face as all relegated teams do, but added to the mix is the fact that it will be their greatest, most hated enemies who will seal their fate

For Crokes, dropping down to intermediate is perhaps even more unthinkable. The team from Lewis Road are one of the traditional powerhouses of Kerry football and, after various stints with the now-defunct Dick Fitzgeralds and a combined Killarney selection, they have been out on their own in the senior championship since the 1980s. The 13-time champions were All-Ireland finalists as recently as 2019. If they were to be relegated now, twoand-a-half years after gracing Croke Park on St Patrick’s Day, it would surely constitute one of the biggest shocks in the history of Kerry football. Blessed as Crokes are with intercounty calibre players like Gavin White, Micheál Burns, Shane Murphy, Tony Brosnan and David Shaw, not to mention decorated veterans like John Payne, Mike Moloney, Johnny Buckley, Daithí Casey, Brian Looney and Kieran O’Leary, relegation is the last thing they would have expected.

OPTIMISTIC

VETERAN: Brian Looney will be a key player for Dr Crokes as the 13-time champions try to avoid relegation. Pic: Brendan Moran/Sportsfile.

Some of the more optimistic observers in our community have suggested that Legion and Crokes have too much about them and whatever happens this weekend, they will come straight back up to senior by virtue of winning the 2022 Intermediate Club Championship. The record books suggest that this is far easier said than done. Of the last 10 clubs to have been relegated, only Kilcummin have managed to return to senior. And they have since been relegated again. Finuge, Currow, St Michael’s-Foilmore, Laune Rangers, Ardfert, Milltown-Castlemaine, An Ghaeltacht and Rathmore have thus far failed to regain their senior status. In fact, more relegated clubs have been relegated again than have been promoted back to the top table. St Michael’s-Foilmore are now operating in the Junior Premier (third tier), as are Ardfert and Currow who meet in a relegation playoff on Saturday. The losers will join Finuge, another former senior club, in the Junior Championship (fourth tier) in 2022. On paper, Legion or Crokes would be the strongest team in next year’s intermediate, but it is clearly not an easy competition to win. Just ask Spa. There is also the small matter of next year’s County Championship. Becoming an intermediate club will make either team’s players eligible to line out for the 2018 and 2019 champions, East Kerry. Although they fell at the first hurdle this time around, the argument has been made that East Kerry already have too many clubs. Adding Legion or Crokes would unquestionably strengthen their hand further still.

That’s if the footballers in question make themselves available. Ever since Crokes “qualified” for this playoff and the idea of them joining East Kerry first entered people’s minds, some fans have wondered aloud if Crokes’ players would be comfortable pulling on the colours of East Kerry when as recently as two years ago the sides were facing off in a county final. It’s just idle gossip at this point but it might be something to keep an eye on, particularly if Crokes are defeated.

SPARED?

It is perhaps unsurprising that talk has already turned to championship structures and the opinion that there are not enough senior clubs in Kerry is currently being bandied about. Former GAA President Seán Kelly suggested on Twitter this week that there should be “at least 12”. If the number of senior clubs were to be increased for 2022, it would spare the losers of Sunday’s playoff the ignominy of being relegated at all. While such speculation will be of comfort to Legion and Crokes supporters, who are no doubt experiencing quite a bit of discomfort at present, the reason this debate is cropping up now is fairly transparent. There may well be valid arguments for increasing the number of senior clubs, but the likes of Rathmore, Kilcummin and An Ghaeltacht will be wondering where all this commotion was when it was their necks on the line. For the time being at least we must work off the assumption that there will be no change in the number of senior clubs next year and that one of Legion or Crokes are going down. If there is a change, we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.

FATE

Whoever is defeated on Sunday will lose face as all relegated teams do, but added to the mix is the fact that it will be their greatest, most hated enemies who will seal their fate. It truly is a once in a generation game – maybe even once in a lifetime – and rain, hail or shine it is sure to draw a huge crowd to Killarney’s Theatre of Dreams. So much is at stake and emotions will be running so high that flash points are almost inevitable. Certainly on the pitch, and maybe even off it. It might be enjoyable for the neutral (it’s safe to assume that Killarney’s third team, Spa, are not too upset about the current situation) but it is shaping up to be a match that the rest of us will have to endure rather than enjoy. Only one club can survive. For the other, the unimaginable is about to become a reality.

HEAD-TO-HEAD 80

3.12.2021

Adam Moynihan examines the potential match-ups ahead of Dr Crokes and Legion’s crunch showdown in the park Predicting how the teams will line out in Sunday’s playoff is quite tricky, particularly when it comes to the Legion who haven’t really had a settled 15 all year. Dr Crokes have also had injury concerns in recent weeks so it will be interesting to see how they shape up in what is without question one of the most important games in the club’s recent history. Here’s a look at the possible head-tohead battles that could decide the fixture. Brian Kelly v AN Other. Kelly is a stalwart of the Legion team by this stage of his career and his reliability is one of his most impressive characteristics. Legion will look to the former Kerry keeper to organise his defence and consistently find his targets from the tee. Where there is certainty at one end of the field, there is a fair amount of uncertainty at the other. There are question marks surrounding who will don Crokes’ No. 1 jersey as regular keeper Shane Murphy missed last week’s match against Rathmore after being knocked unconscious in the county semi-final. Unfortunately for his team, the indications are that Murphy will not be cleared to play on Sunday. This means that Crokes will either go with Adam Kelly, the youngster who replaced Murphy in that semi, or Brendan Falvey, the outfield player who lined out between the posts against Rathmore and acquitted himself well. It is a huge deci-

sion for Crokes’ management team, and one that could have a massive bearing on the outcome of this game. Cian Gammell v Tony Brosnan. When Tony Brosnan is firing on all cylinders, Dr Crokes invariably come out on top. The lively corner forward kicked 0-14 last weekend and if he gets anywhere near that total on Sunday, one would imagine that it will be curtains for the Legion. Cian Gammell is the natural choice to tag Crokes’ dangerman as he has the athleticism and discipline to stick to the task at hand. He can also make rapid bursts forward when Legion are in possession, potentially forcing Brosnan to track back the field – which is naturally not where Crokes want him to be. Kieran Slattery v Micheál Burns. Slattery has earned himself a reputation as a cult hero with Legion fans, thanks in no small part to his remarkable track record of putting in MVP-worthy performances when it matters most. (The beard is probably a factor too.) He was sensational against the Crokes in the 2019 O’Donoghue Cup final and he will need to be on top form again this time around if Legion are to prevail. He will have his hands full with the mobile and active Micheál Burns, a county man who is capable of having a big impact on his day. Burns is lightning fast and well able to score if given a yard of space, and Crokes will be hoping that he finds his groove early on Sunday. Pádraig Lucey v Johnny Buckley. Veteran midfielder Buckley has been dogged by injuries in recent years - but you

wouldn’t know it watching his last outing against Rahillys. The skilful ball-winner was superb in that bruising encounter in Stack Park and his form will be a major concern to Stephen Stack and his selectors. Lucey naturally has the size to compete with, and potentially beat, Buckley in the air. The only question is do Legion want their 6’8” target man out around the middle or in around the square? If they opt for the latter, Mike Moloney will be the one to pick him up. James O’Donoghue v Fionn Fitzgerald. These two boys know each other like the back of their hands by this stage. Fitzgerald is one of Crokes’ stickiest and most irritating markers so it makes perfect sense to attach him to Legion’s best footballer. The pair clashed in more ways than one in last year’s O’Donoghue cup tie: Fitzgerald saw red after a “coming together” in front of the stand in Derreen. If Fitzgerald can stamp out O’Donoghue’s influence on the game, Crokes will be well on their way. Conor Keane v John Payne. This pair know each other very well both on the field and off it - they work together as postmen at the local Post Office – so bragging rights are very much at stake in this particular duel. Keane is a tremendously talented footballer who can leave defenders in knots with his intricate solo runs. Payne, on the other hand, is a no-nonsense defender who revels in nullifying the threat of nippy corner forwards like Keane. A real battle of styles. Stephen Stack v Edmund O’Sullivan. The head-to-head on the sideline is just as interesting as any of the head-to-

The starting line-ups that these two bainisteoirs go with will be intriguing, but perhaps even more telling will be the subs they use, and when they use them. STACK: Legion manager Stephen Stack led Legion to victory over Crokes in the 2019 O'Donoghue Cup final.

heads on the field of play. Former Kerry All-Ireland-winner Stephen Stack earned himself a place in Legion’s history books by leading his team to that famous East Kerry Championship win of 2019. Results have been largely disappointing since, however, and overseeing a relegation would obviously go down as a black mark on any manager’s copy book. There is plenty of pressure on Edmund O’Sullivan too. As is the case with the manager of any big team that is underachieving, every decision he makes on Sunday will be put under the magnifying glass by the club’s passionate supporters. The starting line-ups that these two bainisteoirs go with will be intriguing, but perhaps even more telling will be the subs they use, and when they use them. VERDICT: The absence of Shane Murphy would be a huge blow for Crokes but the bookmakers are seldom far off: the fact that Crokes are 1/8 for this derby says a lot. With the talent at their disposal, they are absolutely capable of justifying those odds and putting Legion to the sword. However, it must also be noted that this Crokes team have not been as ruthless in recent seasons as they have been in the past. Losing high profile games like the county semi-final is bound to affect their confidence. If Legion can stay in the game for long enough, those doubts might start to creep in for Crokes, and that’s when the underdogs could potentially pounce. That is a big “if” though. Legion will need to up their game significantly for this one, otherwise Crokes could be out of sight before they know it.

3.12.2021

How a row over an "illegal" Crokes player led to Legion's first County Championship, and in many ways kickstarted Killarney's greatest sporting rivalry Legion and Crokes have fought a lot down through the years. Both on the playing fields and in the board rooms. But no disagreement was more bitter and had more of a lasting effect on relations than the famous objection saga of 1946. This was a time when the Legion were still the new kids on the block. The club was founded in 1929, a full 43 years after the Dr Crokes club was formed in 1886. The Crokes were well-established by this point having won four County Championships and also having provided a number of players to Kerry’s first All-Ireland-winning teams, most notably the great Dick Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald was Kerry’s first All-Ireland-winning captain and his untimely death in 1930 brought great sadness to the town. Dr Crokes immediately went about developing a field in his honour and in 1936 the Fitzgerald Stadium was officially opened. The stadium should have brought the community together but instead it was the source of some conflict. Crokes accused Legion of not co-operating with the project, a charge which Legion denied – although they did seek assurances that the facility would be made available to everyone in the town. Despite the rivalry, Legion and Crokes lined out side by side in the County

The bitter dispute that kicked it all off Championship during this era as a combined Killarney team. However, Legion decided to strike out on their own in 1944, and Crokes formed the Dick Fitzgeralds, a selection made up mainly by Crokes and Listry players. In 1946, the sides met in an eagerly anticipated county semi-final. The Dicks, wearing Crokes colours and packed with Crokes stars, won the match. But the story of this game was very far from over. Who better to explain this fiasco than Killarney’s greatest sporting historian, the late Weeshie Fogarty? The following is an excerpt from Weeshie’s article on Jimmy Joy, the man whose name “reverberated around Killarney GAA circles way back in the forties and fifties”. “The events surrounding the objection are very clear and simple,” Weeshie wrote on his magnificent Terrace Talk website in August of 2010. “It was the era of the infamous ban (Rule 27) which barred GAA men from playing the socalled foreign games. “The Fitzgeralds selectors had unwittingly included Joy at right half forward on their team despite the fact that they were not short of top-class material. Jimmy was recommended to the selectors by a Dublin-based supporter. However, the highly secretive vigilance committee

had information that the Killorglin-born man had been playing rugby in Dublin. “The Legion objected, and Fitzgerald's counter-objected to Fr Mickey Lyne (granduncle of current Legion star Jonathan), who they alleged was a member of the Glasgow Celtic soccer club. Fr Mickey was ministering in Glasgow at the time. There the saga began. “To make a long story short, Din Joe Bailey, the county board chairman at the time, appealed to the two sides to replay the game. Tom Lynch (father of Kerry greats Brendan and Paudie), representing Dick Fitzgeralds, told the meeting under no circumstances would they replay the game, while Pat O’Meara, secretary of the Legion, said his club did not want the match on an objection. “There was stalemate and eventually the game was awarded to the Legion.” And so, the Derreen club advanced to face John Mitchels in the final of the 1946 County Championship. The match was not played until April of 1947 due to the objection and the counter-objection, and also the bad harvest which was a result of many months of heavy rain. Legion won by 0-7 to 0-5 to secure their first and, to date, only Kerry SFC title. In light of the contentious series of events that had led to Legion’s victory, it is understandable that the Crokes were

not exactly jumping for joy (if you’ll pardon the pun). Writing for The Kerryman at the time, the famous sports writer PF lamented the lack of brotherly love on the streets of Killarney on county final day. “If the ghosts of our teams and their admirers of yore were to roam the streets of Killarney before and after last Sunday's final, they would - if such an emotion was possible with ghosts - have been frightened out of their wits, scared by the complex mentality of the people. “At one street corner they would have heard a group enthusiastically discussing the prospects of the big game, while further on they would have heard something like this (I actually overheard it myself): ‘Go to the match, is it? Look, if it was played in my back garden, I'd draw the blinds.’ “They would even have heard the emphatically-expressed hope ‘that the socks will be beaten off the Legion.’ That, and a good deal more… The cup of bitterness overflowed. Its poisonous content got into the football bloodstream of the town.” Now, as we prepare for possibly the biggest Legion v Crokes game since that fateful day in 1946, one has to wonder: has that poison ever really left? Maybe we’ll find out on Sunday.

WINNERS: The Killarney Legion team who triumphed in the 1946 county final. Their path to glory was not without its controversy.

Brosnan and Roche on fire in EK semis

Eamonn Fitzgerald reports on last weekend’s East Kerry Championship semi-finals as Tony Brosnan helped Dr Crokes to victory over Rathmore and Spa beat Glenflesk - despite the remarkable scoring exploits of Darragh Roche.

Spa and Dr Crokes have qualified for the 2020 O’Donoghue Cup final following wins last weekend over Glenflesk and Rathmore respectively. Michael O’Mahony, PRO of the East Kerry Board, informs me that the final, Spa v Dr Crokes, has been fixed for the Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday, December 12 at 2pm. Extra time if necessary. The East Kerry Board decided some months ago to complete the 2020 series and not to proceed with the 2021 competition due to the uncertainty arising from the Covid restrictions. Last weekend’s semi-finals were not short on excitement.

|

Spa 3-11 | Glenflesk 0-15

Goals win matches and Spa made sure of victory by scoring three, while Glenflesk spurned at least two golden opportunities to hit the net. Glenflesk had several young players on the starting 15 and needed the cushion of goals. They were too dependent on Darragh Roche, the brilliant full forward, to score the points and keep their hopes alive. He scored 0-13 in all. In contrast, Spa scored goals at strategic times, forcing Glenflesk to chase the game for a place in the final. In the first half they played with the aid of a good wind blowing directly down the pitch

to the Lewis Road end. Conditions were perfect with a firm sod on an unseasonably sunny late November day. Direct ball into the full forward line seemed the best strategy for Glenflesk to adopt. However, particularly that first quarter, they used possession very poorly, engaging in cross-field, lateral passing and isolating Darragh Roche inside. Spa countered that by using a sweeper and then breaking clear up field, yielding two early points from team captain Evan Cronin and veteran Niall O’Mahony. Darragh Roche pointed in the 6th and 9th minutes. I expected the Glenflesk midfielders Patrick Darcy and Daniel O’Brien to exert

control, especially in the absence of the injured Liam Kearney, but they didn’t have it all their own way. Ciarán Spillane put in a huge shift for Spa throughout the whole game. Evan Cronin and Mike Foley pushed Spa ahead five points to three but coming up to half-time Glenflesk led 0-7 to 0-5, with Roche and Brian O’Donoghue scoring.

CHANCE

The game-changing moment came in the 29th minute. Jeff O’Donoghue had a great chance of a goal from close range but shot low and hard outside the post. Spa swept up field after that let-off and Eoin Fitzgerald scored their

83

3.12.2021 first goal for a half-time lead of 1-6 to 0-7. Glenflesk captain Chris O’Donoghue had been doing a good marking job on Dara Moynihan, but the Kerry player got loose in the 32nd minute and seemed to be shooting for a point. The shot dipped, deceiving Marc Kelliher for goal number two. Spa now led 2-6 to 0-7 and the prospects were looking grim for Glenflesk. In fairness to them, they battled bravely against the breeze with Roche keeping them in touch with a series of points. At the three-quarter stage they trailed 0-12 to 2-8. Spa had not pushed on until Niall McCarthy struck for goal number three. At the water break Glenflesk trailed 0-12 to 3-9, but they still battled bravely. Jeff O’Donoghue had another great chance of a goal but it did not happen. Spa kicked on with insurance points from Evan Cronin and Ryan O’Carroll to win with five points to spare. |

Dr Crokes 0-22 | Rathmore 3-9

Rathmore scored three goals in this semi-final in Kilcummin and Dr Crokes failed to raise a green flag. However, the Killarney team had the brilliant Tony Brosnan and Jordan Kiely who kicked so many magnificent points that ensured victory in a thrilling encounter. The weather wasn’t as kind as the previous day in the Fitzgerald Stadium. Many wondered if Crokes faced an ambush coming off their one-point defeat to Rahillys in the county semi-final. Crokes felt the fallout from that bruising encounter and were forced to start without the injured Gavin White, Johnny Buckley and goalkeeper Shane Murphy, all key players. Also, Fionn Fitzgerald and Kieran O’Leary were ineligible due to suspensions. All five are very experienced footballers so there was great speculation among the huge attendance in Kilcummin, all of whom were wondering how Crokes would line out. A key selection was the position of goalkeeper. Versatile outfield player Brendan Falvey stepped into the bearna baol, donning the No. 1 geansai. He performed admirably. The half-back trio of Michael Potts, Mark Cooper and Evan Looney, as well as forward Jordan Kiely, also started. With a settled starting 15, Rathmore played with the strong breeze blowing directly down to the scoreboard end. They hit over three early points from joint captain John Moynihan, Cathal Ryan and top scorer Mark Reen. Dr Crokes had plenty of scoring opportunities but were way off target, kicking seven wides in the opening period. To compound their difficulties, they persisted in going for goals instead of picking off their points, as is their normal game. Full credit to Rathmore goalkeeper Kenneth O’Keeffe who pulled off three excellent saves. Gavin O’Shea, nominally a right half

forward, did an excellent job as sweeper, playing very deeply to stem the Rathmore onslaught.

TWO PENALTIES

Then Rathmore struck for two goals, both converted penalties for fouls on Aidan O’Mahony and Shane Ryan. It was a tough baptism for Brendan Falvey, but there was nothing he could do to prevent the two goals. Mark Reen struck two great shots, both on the same trajectory, low and hard to the left of the diving Falvey. Rathmore led 1-3 to 0-4 at the first water-break and 2-5 to 0-9 at half-time. Michael Potts was very effective for Crokes at left-half back. Upfront Dr Crokes depended on Jordan Kiely to keep them in touch and the returning former All- Ireland-winning minor showed that he had lost none of his scoring power to keep the Crokes within touching distance. Crokes did have a goal chance but the three Murphys (Dan, Cathal and Paul) scrambled the ball out of the packed square. Mark O’Shea, the controlled midfielder for Crokes, was well supported by Daithí Casey who was getting his first start in well over a year. He has been rehabilitating after a long-term leg injury, which might have been career-ending. Tony Brosnan and Micheál Burns added points, but Rathmore were still 2-5 to 0-9 at the break.

TONY BROSNAN

The second half was the opportunity for Tony Brosnan to show all his skills that make him a county star. He dominated the scoring, kicking points from all angles and mostly from play. That trusted left leg was on target 13 times and he even finished his last score with his right. Rathmore didn’t give in easily. Their Kerry captain marked Jordi very closely in the second half, but the ever-consistent Brian Looney provided Tony Brosnan with the scoring opportunities. Aidan O’Mahony tied the scores in the 39th minute, 2-6 to 0-12, and then Kerry goalkeeper Shane Ryan pushed Rathmore ahead.

Jordi and Tony Brosnan clicked to add to their points tally and then came the unexpected goal. The referee awarded a free 20 metres from the Crokes posts and a quick-thinking Rathmore player took a quick free, shooting through a sea of legs and into the net. Now Ratmmore were leading 3-8 to 0-16. Were Dr Crokes going to lose out by a single point once more? Brendan Falvey denied them with a brilliant save as the spectators warmed to the close contest. Then a high lobbing ball was lofted into the goalmouth for Shane Ryan, but the perfectly positioned Johnny Buckley saved the day an important contribution during his short spell on as a sub. That would have drawn the game and who knows what might have happened. Tony Brosnan closed out the match with a string of points to copper-fasten the victory. Magnificent shooting by Brosnan. Kiely also signalled his return with 0-7. Mark O’Shea and Micheál Burns were the other Croke scorers. Top scorer for Rathmore was Mark Reen 2-2. Other scorers were Shane Ryan (0-4). Cathal Ryan, Darragh O’Rahilly and Aidan O’Mahony, possibly playing his last game for Rathmore at 41 years of age. That is some service. Well done, Aidan.

BOARD

Full credit to the EKB for the way they staged both semi-finals. On time, good stewarding, a modest entry fee (unlike the big charge in Tralee on Sunday next), free teamsheets and good referees (Eddie Walsh for Spa v Glenflesk and Brendan Brosnan for Crokes v Rathmore), and their officials, who performed very well. Of course, there were a few marginal 50/50 calls to be made, but they got the essentials right which allowed for free-flowing games.

SUNDAY’S GAMES

Local supporters have two very competitive games to look forward to on Sunday. First up is the high noon clash at in the Fitzgerald Stadium featuring Legion and Dr Crokes. There is a lot at stake in this relegation

playoff. The winners will retain their senior championship status for next year while the losers will be relegated to the intermediate ranks. For Kerry SFC fare they will join the East Kerry team. You can imagine the powerful pick East Kerry will have, with so many good players in whichever town team loses on Sunday. Legion have not had a game since they lost to St Brendan’s in the County Championship, while Dr Crokes played Kerins O’Rahillys and Rathmore over the past two weekends. Dr Crokes will have most, but not all, of their players available for selection. No doubt Legion will have plans to curb the free-scoring antics of Tony Brosnan and Jordi Kiely, who delivered most of their scores in Kilcummin on Sunday last. Meanwhile Legion have fine players such as Brian Kelly, James O’Donoghue, Conor Keane and Darragh Lyne, who will spearhead their challenge. Best of luck to both teams. Unfortunately, one will be relegated. Is that a fair system for County Championshp status? That’s the scenario for club teams; not so for divisional board sides. For so many years now divisional board teams such as Shannon Rangers and Feale Rangers have been easy pickings for any opposition. They are so weak that any club team will beat them easily. Is there a silver lining, a safety net for Dr Crokes or Legion? Will the number of teams for the 2022 Kerry SFC be extended? The incoming chairman of the Kerry County Board will have a big say in that scenario.

KERRY SFC FINAL

Stacks and Rahillys will engender much passion in this all-Tralee county final. I expect it to be a dour affair, dominated by frees. The best free-taker will decide this one because neither side have enough good natural forwards to point the way to victory. I have been unimpressed by Stacks forwards, who offer little threat. Indeed, their best forward is Quilter, who doesn’t usually start. Rahillys have better natural forwards in Jack Savage, Conor Hayes and Barry John Keane, assisted by assister Tommy Walsh. Stacks have very good, well-disciplined backs, who do not foul. Not so Rahillys, who live on the edge and stray far beyond too often. Midfield control will go to Rahillys, especially if Moran exerts early dominance over O’Connor. I have been disappointed in the latter in this championship. He was shaping up for inclusion in the Kerry panel but needs a big performance on Sunday. Jack O’Connor will be in the stand wondering if the Stacks man will be good enough to get the Kerry geansaí for the opening National League game in Newbridge. Stacks are the bookies’ favourites, but I fancy Rahillys because they have a few natural forwards and Jack Savage is a reliable free-taker.

Tough run continues for Killarney clubs There was no joy for either of Killarney’s two National League clubs last week as the Lakers and the Cougars lost to the Portlaoise Panthers and the Limerick Celtics respectively. RECOVERY: The Killarney RFC U16 team paid a visit to Reboot Recovery after their impressive victory.

Killarney rugby girls remain undefeated Last weekend a combined Dolphin/Midleton/Youghal side travelled to Killarney for the last U16 league game in the conference. U16 MUNSTER LEAGUE _________________________________________________________________________________

Killarney 30 | Dolphin/Midleton/Youghal 5 AGHADOE

Played in cold and windy conditions, the Killarney girls started like they meant business. The girls played some terrific running rugby and ran in some very impressive scores. Killarney ran the ball at every opportunity and only kicked from hand once in the entire game. Leading 20-0 at half-time, the girls kept on scoring in the second half. They conceded a late try to the gallant Cork side, who in fairness kept asking serious questions of the Killarney defence. Some of the Killarney girls tackling was very impressive, led by Player of the Match Ava O'Malley whose tackle count was in the teens. She was supported by Clodagh Foley, Melissa McCarthy, Fia Whelan and Bronagh Dorrian. Any time the Cork side did penetrate the Killarney defensive wall, fullback Marina Eager dealt with it and counter-attacked very well from all areas of the field. The defensive play of the day came in the last five minutes when birthday girl Fia Whelan wrestled possession from one of the Cork girls’ hands and put in a superbly timed pass to the onrushing winger Niamh Dorrian, who finished off the try very impressively. It was the last score of the game. Two of our new recruits made their debuts, namely Gráinne Kennedy and Lucy O'Sullivan. Both girls are relatively new to the game but they made significant contributions and are great additions to the growing squad. By topping their conference, the girls are now into the semi-finals of Munster. In true rugby fashion, both teams shared a warm cup of hot chocolate and some treats after the game, hosted by the wonderful parents of the Killarney girls led

When Emilian Grudov sank a three pointer midway through the third quarter to leave the minimum between the sides, it looked as if the momentum was firmly with the visiting Scotts Lakers. They had clawed their way back from a 15-point deficit earlier in the same period and revenge for the National Cup defeat on Halloween was on. However, for the remaining of third quarter and early minutes of the fourth, the Portlaoise Panthers went on a scoring spree to open up a 13-point lead once again, 67 to 54. New Lakers signing Godwin Boahen, a Division 1 graduate from the University of Illinois, helped the Lakers mount yet another comeback in the fourth quarter but eventually it was left to Australian Nelson Larkins have the final say as the Panthers ran out 77-71 winners. |

AWARD: Chris Davies of Reboot Recovery presents a voucher to Killarney RFC's Player of the Match Ava O'Malley.

by team manager Anne Gabbett. Many more of the parents were, as always, on hand to support the girls and the club. To top off a great day, the team then visited the fantastic facilities of the newly opened Reboot Recovery Suite for some richly deserved recovery, team bonding, and of course some pizza. If you think your daughter may enjoy rugby, training for U14s, U16s and U18s takes place in Aghadoe every Wednesday between 6.45pm and 8.15pm evening. New members always welcome. Give Anne a call on 086 3125722.

KILLARNEY RFC: Annie O'Reilly, Ella Guerin-Crowley, Molly Gabbett, Joanne O'Keefe, Melissa McCarthy, Katie O’Donoghue, Clodagh Foley, Ava O’Malley, Robyn Landers, Fia Whelan (captain), Ali O’Donoghue, Bronagh Dorrian, Holly O’Sullivan, Niamh Dorrian, Marina Eager, Miriam O'Sullivan, Grainne Kennedy, Isabella O’Leary, Kate Mangan, Lucy O’Sullivan, Jess O'Sullivan.

The Cougars hosted the high-flying Celtics at the Pres Gym last Thursday evening and in a thrilling contest the visitors secured the win. The Cougars pushed them all the way, though, and the travelling team needed an impressive scoring return in the closing three minutes to get over the line.

NEW SIGNING: Scotts Lakers' Canadian guard Godwin Boahen.

The Killarney lads trailed 21-18 after the opening quarter with Jaime Fernandez and Justin Tuason contributing good baskets, as Andre Wolford hit seven points for the Celtics. The Limerick outfit had a good start to the second. They increased the lead to 10 points, but Cougars responded well with Mark O'Shea nailing a couple of three pointers to reduce the deficit to just three. Rafael Llopis Martinez was in top scoring form for the Celtics but Cougars hit the front in the third thanks to three pointers by Fernandez. However, the Celtics found a response to retake the lead 61-57. After a good start to the final quarter, the home team led 68-65 but the Celtics came with a strong finish. Roger Sanahuja and Martinez came up with some great scores to take the win in a very exciting and well contested game.

History-maker Nagle completes the set

Paul Nagle’s victory on last Saturday’s Rentokil Initial Killarney Historic Rally gave the Aghadoe man a unique record that is unlikely to be matched: he has now won every major rally in Kerry. Saturday’s victory has been added to previous wins on the Rally of the Lakes (2019), The Circuit of Kerry (2004) and the Kerry Winter Rally (2003). He is also a former winner of the Modified section of the Killarney Historic Rally and a double winner of the now discontinued Killarney Forestry Rally. It was a double celebration for the Aghadoe man and his driver Craig Breen who were driving a Mats Van Den Brand-prepared BMW M3 with support from Rentokil Initial and Ahern’s BMW. His father Maurice founded the rally 25 years ago and after he passed away just after the

2018 event his family and friends created the Maurice Nagle Memorial Cup, which is presented to the overall winner of the event. Meanwhile, Rob Duggan and Ger Conway dedicated their win on the Modified section of the Killarney Historic Rally to the memory of their great friend Johnny Hickey. Johnny passed away suddenly in April but was always one of Rob’s greatest supporters in the sport, particularly in the early days when the Aghadoe man won the Billy Coleman Young Driver of the Year award and his subsequent attacks on both the British and World Junior Championships. Alan Ring and his West Cork co-driver Adrian Deasy were a solid second in the main Historic section their Subaru Legacy. It was his best run in their new car; the Killarney Historic Rally was just their third event in it. “Second to Craig – I am happy with that,” Ring said after the rally.

3.12.2021 SPORT NOTES

Killarney Athletic AGM: AGM has been deferred to the New Year due to rising Covid numbers. U12 NATIONAL CUP: Killarney Athletic 4 Broadford United 0. Our young blues welcomed Broadford United from Limerick to Killarney on Saturday morning. After a slow start Athletic started to get into the tie, putting the Limerick side under pressure and they were unlucky not to take the lead when Cian Hegarty hit the underside of the bar from a great flowing move. Athletic took the lead midway through the first half, it came from a free kick from Jayden Hurley from around 20 yards out which gave the keeper no chance. In the second half Athletic kept up the pressure and Enna Hennigan smashed a near post shot into the roof of the net after great work from Conor Moynihan on the right. Athletic got a third soon after when we won possession high up the pitch and a lovely square ball fall to Hegarty. This time he finished into the top corner. Athletic didn't let up and few minutes from time Callum Cox got the fourth from a lovely free kick giving the keeper no chance. Thanks to Broadford for a very sporting game and to all the parents who helped making a great day for everyone with refreshments after.

Defeat in Waterford has ended our run in the FAI Junior Cup. The team got off to a bad start by conceding a penalty in the opening minutes which was very neatly saved by Roy Kelliher. The home side were in the ascendancy for much of the first half and took the lead when a cross from the left was finished to the net from close range. However Celtic bounced back when Stephen McCarthy equalised to leave the sides level at the break. Villa took the honours with an outstanding shot from outside the area to leave the scoreline 2-1 to the home side.
