Call for CCTV to curb anti-social behaviour Ballyspillane residents have this week called for CCTV for their estate as a matter of priority to curb anti-social behaviour and make residents feel safe in their homes. | By Michelle Crean The call for action comes just two weeks after an accelerant was thrown at a home in the estate due to an ongoing feud between two families. During the Killarney Municipal District meeting on Wednesday morning, a deputation from the estate outlined their concerns and the need for an upgrade to street lighting and footpaths, more car parking spaces and other infrastructure in the estate – some of which are almost 40 years old. The importance of monitoring and enforcement of the control of animals, illegal dumping and burning in the 216-house estate, was also raised by members of the Ballyspillane Residents Association. Another issue, they added, which is badly affecting the community, is a derelict house in the estate. David Foran, Chair of the Residents Association and resident Veronica Murphy,

spoke during the deputation which was brought before the Council by Cllr Niall Kelleher. David said that there is a very strong sense of community in the area and that they’re also part of a Joint Policing Forum which is working well, but that residents need to feel safe in their homes. “We request that the safety of all residents is focussed upon,” he said. “It is the upmost priority that we are safe in our own homes. We have been asking for years for you to help. We have highlighted the issue which has fallen on deaf ears and now we’re at the stage where lives are at risk.” The Residents Association was set up in 1983, they explained, and in more recent years some very positive work has been done with many different agencies, including setting up a three-year plan to work towards a better quality of life for those living in the estate. However, anti-social behaviour continues to be

an issue affecting everyone. The whole community is becoming more and more frustrated and disillusioned, he added. “With the system, it looks like there are no repercussions for those engaging in anti-social behaviour and it’s the innocent neighbours that are most affected by the dangerous activities taking place. We strongly urge that you all push for

the Anti-Social Behaviour Policy of KCC be made fit for purpose.” Cllr Kelleher told the Killarney Advertiser this week that while there were concerns to be overcome, it will make it a better place to live for everybody. “There are challenges but that can be overcome with agencies coming together. The big one will be CCTV for the area.”

St Mary of the Angels farm could fetch over €1m | By Sean Moriarty A 110-acre farm, which is attached to St Mary of the Angels – could fetch in excess of €1m - when sold by public auction later this month. However, there was opposition to news of the sale of Whitefield Farm this week as Donie Rua O’Sullivan, who is on the Save St Mary’s of the Angels Committee, said that the farm attached to St Mary of the Angels in Beaufort, should be returned to the people of Kerry and not sold by its current owner, the Franciscan Missionaries of the Divine Motherhood. The 110-acre Whitefield Farm was donated by Denis and May Doyle to the Order over 50 years ago. Their only daughter, Mary Rose Doyle, joined the Order at this time and it was decided by

the then Bishop of Kerry, the Order and the Doyle family, that the land would be used to found a care centre and home for children with intellectual disabilities.

The Order operated the home until 2005 when the management of the centre was transferred St John of God Community Services.

However, the Order retained ownership of the farm and this week instructed local auctioneer Tom Spillane to sell it to fund the retirement of its nuns. The Killarney Advertiser has learned that Sr Mary Rose Doyle is aware of the sale and is supportive of the Order’s wishes to sell it at the auction in the Royal Hotel, Killarney, on May 30. “It was understood at the time [the land was donated] that it would be used for the care of these children,” Donie said. “This land must be returned to the people of Kerry and put in to a trust. These could be used a sports facility for the children and young adults, we have a lot of athletes competing in the Special Olympics and this could be used as a Centre of Excellence for them.”

Carmella shaped the lives of many young people | By Michelle Crean

The passing of a well-known and much liked Killarney Community College teacher has cast a dark cloud of sadness over the communities of Aghadoe, Fossa, Killarney and far beyond, this week.

SONG: Neily O’Connor, who is running in this year’s local election for Fianna Fail, out with his supporters in Killarney town on Tuesday afternoon.

One election candidate is singing a different tune! There was a surprise impromptu sing-song through Killarney town on Tuesday afternoon as one local election hopeful opted for a different campaign tactic. Musician Neily O’Connor from Ballaugh, who is on the Fianna Fail ticket, took to the streets with Senator Mark Daly, TD John Brassil and his campaign team including his first born grandchild Rían, who is just three weeks old - singing his heart out in exchange for votes! And his self-penned song, the ‘Neily O’Connor Election Song’, which he recorded in his own recording studio at home, went down a treat. Written over a couple of weeks and recorded to the air of the ‘The Hills of Donegal’, lyrics include ‘Our day has come, O’Connor run Kilcummin to sweet Rathmore, Killarney seen as Nei-

ly’s dream as he walks the country road. Election time will sew the mind O’Connor is on a roll, a No1 I'm asking for’. “As a performer I feel a good lively song brings a great atmosphere to the campaign,” Neily told the Killarney Advertiser. “People are drawn to music as it’s universal. We got a very warm and positive welcome in Killarney town. People were engaging with us – they enjoyed the atmosphere, giving me enormous support.” The song is available online to listen to on Facebook: Neily O’Connor.

Carmella Sheehy, of Linn Dubh, Aghadoe, died peacefully in the Suaimhneas Centre, Palliative Care Unit, University Hospital Kerry on Wednesday, April 24, following a battle with cancer. Originally from Blackpool in Cork city, Carmella remained a true rebel at heart and although Kerry became her home for over 40 years she never converted to the ‘green and gold’. The huge crowds of people who came from all corners of the country and beyond to pay their respects at Carmella’s beloved home and at Fossa Church to a dear friend, colleague, relative, teacher, mentor, are testament to the esteem in which she was held by all those who were lucky enough to cross her path. “Carmella was all about people and both her personal and professional life reflected that,” Niamh Dwyer, PRO of Kerry Branch of Institute of Guidance Counsellors, told the Killarney Advertiser. “As a social worker, a counsellor, a chaplain, a youth worker and most recently as a guidance counsellor, Carmella embraced all those with whom she came in contact, with empathy, care and respect.” As a volunteer she spent many years helping those less fortunate than herself and bringing out the best in young people through her involvement with various folk groups and Fossa Youth Club. She was an avid cyclist, taking part in the Ring of Kerry and the Ring of Beara to raise

money for various charities. “In her work as a guidance counsellor in Killarney Community College and as an active member of the Kerry Branch of Guidance Counsellors, Carmella shaped the lives of many young people. Her door was always open and she greeted students, parents and colleagues with her caring smile and her warmth. “As a colleague, she is remembered as someone who lit up the room with her warm personality and who added robustly to all discussions.” Carmella will be deeply missed by all her guidance colleagues in the Kerry branch and beyond, her colleagues in Killarney Community College, the students who were lucky enough to have her as a guiding light, by her many friends and most especially by her loving family, she added. “Our deepest condolences and heartfelt sympathy go out to her husband Eddie, and to Daire, Triona and Eamonn.”

Councillors pay tribute to John Joe Culloty Councillors paid glowing tributes to outgoing Fianna Fáil councillor John Joe Culloty at this week’s Killarney Municipal District.

John Joe Culloty.

On Wednesday morning Cllr Niall Kelleher led the well-wishes saying Cllr Culloty, who is not seeking re-election this time around, was “nothing but dedicated and energetic in his role”. “We’ve always worked well together for the greater good,” Cllr Kelleher said at the meeting in the Town Hall.

“He was a fantastic ambassador for this town.” Other councillors, including Brendan Cronin, Maura Healy-Rae, Michael Gleeson, Donal O’Grady, John Sheahan and Bobby O’Connell, also praised the local councillor, saying he stood for what he believed in since he was elected in 2014. “You’re a very dedicated councillor who left no stone unturned,” Cllr Sheahan said. “You were very generous with your

time.” Maura Healy-Rae added that he was a tremendous worker for the Killarney area, while Donal O’Grady said that “the amount of work he did was unreal and he’ll be sadly missed as a councillor for the town”. Cllr Culloty added that he appreciated all the well-wishes and will continue his the work on a voluntary basis. “I really do appreciate all that’s being said,” he told his colleagues. “I’ve done the best I can do and I’ve no regrets.”

Michael Fassbender home to participate in the Rally of the Lakes with Cormac Casey and Dermot Healy (Clerk of the Course) visiting St Brendan's College, Killarney on Tuesday

Fassbender’s first Lakes Hollywood star visits three local schools Hollywood star and Killarney native Michael Fassbender this week spoke exclusively to the Killarney Advertiser, ahead of his first ever rally this weekend – admitting that he’s a bit nervous. | By Michelle Crean Oscar nominated star, Michael, who appeared in ‘Hunger’, ‘X-Men: First Class’ and ‘12 Years a Slave’, said he’s excited to be participating in this year’s cartell. ie International Rally of the Lakes and also honoured to take up the role of ambassador. “Nervous!,” Michael said. “I am very excited to be participating in this year's Rally of the Lakes. It is a historic event here in Killarney and one that will continue on into the future for a very long time I hope. It is a great hon-

our for me to take on the role of ambassador for such an important sporting event.” On Tuesday, Michael and members of Killarney and District Motor Club, visited three local schools including Killarney Community College, St Brendan’s ‘The Sem’ and St Brigid’s Secondary School, where he was made feel very welcome by some very excited students and staff. While there he showed them a Ford Puma rally car and spoke to them about safety on the road. It was an experience that he very much enjoyed, he said.

“I very much enjoyed the opportunity to talk to the students. It was inspiring to hear their opinions and outlooks to life. Also, it reminded me of my time as a student. It can be a tricky age when you are trying to find your path in life workwise. “I was certainly inspired by them. I would always encourage young people to get as much experience in as many things as possible in life. To get behind the wheel of a car early in life and practice defensive driving if they have the opportunity, so that when something unexpected happens in a car you are as prepared as you possibly can be. I wish them the very best in their future endeavours.” Fassbender is not the only household name in Killarney for the annual Rally of

the Lakes. RTE broadcasting legend Michael Lyster, along with Irish Examiner motorsport journalist Martin Walsh, will interview contestants in this year’s rally as they go over the start ramp in the Fair Hill car park at 6pm this evening (Friday). Later this evening they will both lead a Q&A session with Michael Fassbender some of the leading drivers and motorsport personalities in Scott’s Hotel. This event is due to start at 8pm. On Saturday, Formula One Grand Prix legend Tommy Byrne from Dundalk will attend a book signing in Eason’s on Main St, between 5pm and 6pm, as well as being at Service Park in Liebherr and at the finish celebrations in the Gleneagle Hotel on Sunday.

Gardaí plan to target boy racers

Former rally winner to be reunited with winning car | By Sean Moriarty The winner of the second Rally of the Lakes, Ger Buckley, will be reunited with his event-winning Vauxhall Chevette HSR at the rally’s start ramp in the Fair Hill car park tonight (Friday). Killarney and District Motor Club is this weekend celebrating the 40th running of the popular two-day rally with a host of sideshows organised to run alongside the main event. The rally will get underway with the traditional ceremonial start at 6pm tonight where Buckley will be reunited with the car he drove to victory 39 years ago. The Banteer man, a cousin of the legendary Billy Coleman, won the Rally of the Lakes in 1980 driving a Vauxhall Chevette that was originally built by the factory rally team. Buckley enjoyed tremendous success during the early 1980s and drove the famous Vauxhall to victory on several rallies including the 1981 Circuit of Kerry and Cork ‘20’ International rallies. He sold the car to his north Cork neighbour Demi Fitzgerald, who went on to win the 1981 Rally of the Lakes and backto-back Circuit of Kerry rallies in 1982 and 1983. After that the famous car arrived in Kerry

11

and was used by Killarney garage owner Patie Murphy for one season. Murphy finished fourth on the 1984 Rally of the Lakes, one of the best-ever local performances in the early days of the rally. Mike Dunnion was the last known driver of the car and he used it on Irish and British events through 1987 and 1988. The car was bought back by the Buckley family in 2017 and underwent extensive restoration by Derry-based historic rally competitor and Vauxhall expert Mervyn Johnstone. Friday night will mark the car’s first appearance in Killarney in possibly 30 years. It will be shown complete with 1980 Electrical and Pump Services Ltd livery. “Gerald has great memories of the Rally of the Lakes and is especially delighted to have the car back with him at the event this year,” said his son Patrick. “Moll’s Gap and Ballaghbeama stages in particular were and continue to be really special stages and you need a special car to have a right crack off them – the Chevette at the time gave you that opportunity to really go after a time and take an edge in the rally.” Adding to the occasion, Dunnion will drive a different Chevette HSR in the demonstration class that has been introduced to the rally this year to celebrate the event’s 40th anniversary.

Killarney Gardai will be backed-up by the Armed Response Unit and the Dog Unit to target so called boy racers who come to the town and cause inconvenience to locals and genuine rally fans, during this weekend’s cartell.ie Rally of the Lakes. Gardai said that over 60,000 people are expected in Killarney this weekend for the rally and other events, and that they want people to enjoy themselves. “This is the 40th year of the Rally of the Lakes, we wish the organisers well with their event and celebrations,” Sgt Dermot O’Connell of Killarney Garda Station said. “The Rally has achieved success and positive recognition over the past 40 years for its legendary stages of Molls Gap and Healy Pass. “For An Garda Síochána it is a significant policing operation. The massive influx of rally supporters, competitors and regular holiday weekenders to the Killarney area is estimated to be in the region of 60,000 visitors. The weekend of festivities is there to be enjoyed by the whole family and that is exactly what we want to see, people enjoying themselves.” On Wednesday, local Gardai and organisers of the rally met to discuss the extensive traffic management and public safety plan ahead of what is traditionally one of Killarney’s busiest weekends. “We want people to come and enjoy the rally,” said Inspector Tony Sugrue of the Road Policing Unit in Tralee. “Boy racers are not welcome and they should at home. We will have a specific focus on those who have nothing to do with the rally but seem too keen on disrupting it. Boy racers will be targeted and the mes-

sage is to stay at home.” Inspector Sugrue added that the Road Policing Unit will be setting up several roadblocks on the approach to the town from Friday night. “This year’s Policing Operation has built on the success of recent years; it sets out the plan of action to deal effectively with all of the policing needs that have been identified following consultation with the many stakeholders,” added Sgt O’Connell. “There will be numerous checkpoints set up over the weekend as well as increased high visibility patrols in the Killarney area. Anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated. If you intend on having a drink, park up the car for the evening and remember that they may still be over the limit the morning after a night out.” The Lewis Road car park will remain closed for the duration of the event, from Friday morning until Sunday evening, while the Fair Hill car park will be closed all day Friday to facilitate the ceremonial start. The N72 Moll’s Gap road from Killarney to Kenmare will close between 7.30am and 11.15am on Saturday. The same road will close between 7.30am and 1.30pm on Sunday. There will be additional road closures on Sunday in Sheen River from 8am to 2pm, Knockysheehan from 12.15 to 6pm, and Gortnagane from 1pm to 6.30pm.

Family event to kick start rally Organisers of this weekend’s 40th anniversary cartell.ie Rally of the Lakes have created a new town centre family event on Friday night. The ruby anniversary celebrations will get underway this evening (Friday) with the traditional ceremonial start in the Fair Hill car park in the town – a new departure from its usual Main St location. This will give fans their first opportunity to meet the 150 contestants and see the cars for the first time. Each competitor will go over the start ramp at the College St exit of the car park, led by the Ford Fiesta R5 of Craig Breen and local co-driver Paul Nagle.

Each competitor will be interviewed on the ramp by former RTE broadcasting legend and rally enthusiast Michael Lyster, to the backdrop of traditional music, led by local star Liam O’Connor. Members of the Killarney Valley Vintage and Classic Car Club will display some of their classic machinery and several rally cars of historical importance will also be on static display. It will also be the public’s first opportunity meet event ambassador, Hollywood A-lister and local man Michael Fassbender. Activity in Fair Hill car park will start around 6pm and will run until around 8pm when the action shifts to the Scott’s Gardens auditorium in the same area.

Garda youth award for inspirational Ian | By Sean Moriarty Inspirational Killarney teenager Ian O’Connell was one of dozens of young people aged between 13 to 21 honoured at the first ever Garda National Youth Awards last Saturday.

Killarney Races are a boost to local economy Killarney is preparing for its three summer race meetings – which are estimated to bring €6.2 million to the region. The three annual festivals bring more than 80 races over a total of 12 days with €1.6 million in prizemoney. The action will get underway on Sunday, May 12 which has been designated a special family day out and nothing is being left to chance to ensure that children – and the young at heart – are well catered for. The first race will be at 1.35pm and a feast of high-quality National Hunt racing is on the cards as well as free entertainment, fun-filled competitions and music with some terrific prizes to be won. Monday will be an evening meeting with the off timed for 5.05pm and the eagerly awaited highlight will be the high-profile Killarney National which this year will feature an increased prize fund of a whopping €70,000, thanks to the generosity of new sponsor TOTE Ireland. Tuesday’s racing – a flat card – will also be an evening meeting with the first race timed for 5.20pm and it has been designated as a special night at the

track for those involved in the hospitality industry with special discounts available for all hard-working hospitality staff. There will be a very impressive overall prize fund of €450,000 for the May meeting and some of the superstars of the sport will be in Killarney over the action-packed three days. When it comes to racing festivals, Killarney simply has few rivals in terms of excitement and a top-quality venue, and it came as no surprise to punters when the course was voted number 13 in the top 20 racecourses in the world by the Racing Post. Killarney racing dates back to 1822, while the present racecourse, set against the backdrop of Killarney National Park, was opened in 1936. The May festival meeting is the first of three planned for the summer and the other dates for the diary are July 15-19 – with the hugely popular Ladies’ Day planned for Thursday 18 – and August 21-24 with Ladies’ Day on Saturday, August 24.

Ian (16), who was left paralysed from the shoulders down after being thrown from his bike in August 2017, won an award for “showing strength in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds”. He now has more than 42,000 followers on Instagram, through which, he offers online support to young people and their families who are grappling with similar issues in their lives. The citation for his award read: “Ian’s determination is legendary. He was told that he would never come off a ventilator; he got rid of it within 80 days. Ian O’Connell continues to defy the odds.

He has returned to school. This entails getting up at 5.30am for his rehab treatment each day before he sets off for school”. Ian was nominated for the award by his cousin John Doona of Arbutus Grove in Killarney. “I am so grateful I'm here today,” Ian told the Killarney Advertiser this week. “I never thought I would be winning awards like this. It just shows greatness comes from badness. Thanks to John for nominating me. Thanks to everyone for the support and kind messages.” Minister for Justice Charlie Flanagan and Assistant Garda Commissioner Anne Marie McMahon presented 22 awards in total to more than 100 young people. “To be recognised as someone who has made their community a better or safer place to live, or as someone who has defied the odds in overcoming difficult circumstances, is really special,” Mr Flanagan said.

GARDA AWARD: Attending the first National Garda Youth Awards in the Midlands Park Hotel in Portlaoise on Saturday were: Garda Dianne Collins, Garda Tim O’Connell (Assistant Commissioner Southern Region), Anne Marie McMahon, Jerry Dwyer (Lee Strand), Teresa Higgins-Walker (Lee Strand), John O’Sullivan (Lee Strand), Ian O’Connell, Killarney (award winner), Michael Horgan, (Killarney), Eamon Nolan, Kevin Lenihan, James McDonnell from Castleisland Community College (award winners) and Superintendent Flor Murphy.

NOMINATION: Cllr Niall Kelleher, pictured with his 94-year-old grandfather Con Kelleher. On Wednesday, Con nominated Niall to contest this year's local election taking place on May 24.

Columnist ANNE LUCEY gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry and beyond

Two-tiered system still unfair for the self-employed Few things have struck me as so bizarre, and yet so telling, as the attack by the Irish Congress of Trade Unions (ICTU) on the meagre sop thrown to the self-employed by the Government this week. Actually, the entitlement of the self-employed to seek Jobseeker’s welfare payments, based on paid social insurance contributions, when their business fails, announced on Monday by Minister Regina Doherty, will not come into effect until November next. And out-come the hugely paid and highly cushioned officials in the Irish Congress of Trade Unions, in their virtually unsackable positions, retreating into the 19th century rhetoric, and criticising the insurance contribution paid by self-employed who make up almost one fifth of the workforce now. And in the process of ICTU lining up their blind artillery, they get their sums wrong and fail to tell the full story. All self-employed, regardless of how

little they earn, pay four percent contributions and have no entitlements. A substantial number of employees pay no contribution at all, and enjoy full entitlements. But ICTU take a broad sweep, like an old dinosaur swishing its tail, and give out about the four percent paid by the self-employed versus the 14 percent by employees – but they forgot to add “some” employees. And they forget to point out the self-employed in this country pay far higher income taxes and have fewer reliefs than those in paid employment. But sure how would ICTU know? As this column has pointed out before, the public service and the semi-state is the only show in town for Irish trade

union movement these days. This is partly by choice. The trade union movement in this country, fought so hard for by my parents and others, has confined its activities to the polite corridors of the public service where the pickings are easy and where hard won gains of previous decades, have been cornered for just one sector of society. The coal face of complex and hard working conditions in hotels, transport, media and other industry has been abandoned by the trade union movement in this country – with regional representation worst of all. I strongly suspect the lukewarm interest by this Government in the self-employed is because of fear of being hauled before Europe. But even so, the little interest by Taoiseach Varadkar, and especially by Regina Doherty, is very welcome and is in stark contrast to previous regimes in FF/Labour and FG itself when led by the teacher! Thanks to Regina I can even get a free eye test once every two years for the first time in my long working life. But let’s not get carried away: In 2008, a whole paper was presented by an EU Think Thank on the “unresolved issue of the employment status of the self-employed” in Ireland. This ranged from having no collective bargaining voice, to lack of legal protection and complete lack of social security and the failure of Ireland to provide any information at all on key areas for the self-employed. Add in higher income tax…

As I wrote here before on union representation the most advanced societies, economically and socially in Europe, have the highest trade union membership. But at 461,000 that is 24 percent of and falling Ireland is nearer Turkey at six percent, than Sweden at 67 percent. Of that, 24 percent of the Irish workforce who are union members, around 75 percent are public sector employees. There are 321,000 public sector employees, and most of the rest are semistate. Just one area that really annoys me – expenses. Politicians and public servants do not pay tax on very generous mileage allowances of up to cases 70, 73 and 83 cent a kilometre depending on engine size, and a thing called distance band. So the State such as the Customs and Revenue can get very generous mileage and subsistence, including meal allowance for the day and is entitled to it - tax free. But the misfortunate farmer, hairdresser or the publican being pursued for a liquour licence, or a late tax return, or the shivering solicitor who cannot afford an overcoat in the case, will only be able to claim the actual price of the petrol, or the actual price of the newspaper and the chicken wrap sandwich from across the road, that’s if he or she has time to eat it with the need to work for his crust. And make sure to keep the receipt because every expense for the self-employed must be vouched for! Meanwhile a tidy profit can be pocketed by the State employee who will not have to hire an accountant to do their tax returns! We have a two-tiered system and the situation is not too dissimilar to the 19th century and the ruling classes who wielded power and privilege for their own class.

Still no pedestrian crossing on Mission Road Now to roads, roundabouts and pedestrian crossings! I doubt if those in the 19th century who thought up the idea of strong local Government when we were part of the great British Empire, could ever imagine that a roundabout or a pedestrian crossing on a fairly humble Killarney Street would have to be approved in London or Dublin. But there you have it! Such is our centralised system, the pedestrian crossing at the Monsignor Flaherty statue,

at the unfortunately named Mission Road, is on hold! Two years ago the dire need for the crossing was pointed out in this column. Later it was taken up by councillors - but the result is the same - there still is no crossing. Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) have requested a safety audit to be carried out, the Council said this week, on foot of a motion by Cllr Cronin. But I detected the Council itself is not that enthusiastic. And on this note I hope to give you a laugh.

A very serious and clearly highly qualified engineer made an unfortunate slip at the MD meeting, mixing up his monsignors: “Of the Monsignor Horan… excuse me, Monsignor Flaherty statue, there is a concern it could be a rat run!” the engineer said of the proposal. He immediately corrected himself on the matter of the monsignors - but not before a few of the more irreverent journalists on the press bench – and it has to be said a colleague started grinning at the inadvertent solution to the

whole problem of crossing the road. “Rat run?” queried Cronin. “They can’t run anywhere. They are stuck in cars melting in the traffic!” the councillor said. For a moment I had visions of a monsignor, not in a long soutane, but in a colour kilt dancing at the crossroads, and like the pied piper of Hamlin, leading the rats out of town. Or maybe halting the marathon traffic so the pedestrians can get through the traffic on Mission Road! End of crossing problem.

Rathmore Ravens plan kids Lip Sinc event A fun night showcasing some exceptional talent is planned in Killarney next week – with a ‘Lip Sinc Kids' event. | By Michelle Crean Organised by the Rathmore Ravens Basketball Club, there’s plenty of rehearsals underway for the night, which takes place on Saturday, May 11 in the Heights Hotel, Killarney.

Nine acts will perform and three surprise judges will be making the difficult decisions on the night - two of whom are well known local stars. There are over 50 children, both members and non-members, volunteering their time in preparation, all master-

fully guided by well-known Creative Director, Joe Burkett, Lorraine Dineen, Rathmore Ravens Lip Sinc Kids Committee, explained to the Killarney Advertiser. “The excitement is building and with kids from Rathmore and the surrounding areas taking part, it’s going to be a fantastic local event,” she said. “This year marks our 10 year anniver-

sary, and so, to celebrate this and raise important funds, we are excited to announce this event. The Lip Sinc craze is huge, and our acts have really gotten into character. The children are from Rathmore, Glenflesk, Gneeveguilla, Hollymount and Knocknagree. Our acts are currently being revealed on Facebook: RathmoreRavens.” The basketball club has gone from strength to strength over the past number of years, and this year they have over 180 members registered, she added. Doors open at 6pm with the show starting at 7pm. Tickets are €20 and tickets for primary aged children are €10. To book tickets call 087 7791831 or 0863747780. Tickets will be on sale in Centra, Rathmore today (Friday) from 9.30-11.30am.

with Beech Road is on hold pending the construction of the Muckross Road Haha Safety Scheme. It would be 2020 before construction could begin and a safety audit was necessary for the slip road into the car park which was used on occasions such as St Patrick’s Day. “The Haha Safety Scheme could be aptly named!” he said. “It could take years.” Meanwhile people were taking their life into their hands trying to cross the Mission Road to access Killarney House and the National Park, the meeting was told. Cllr Michael Gleeson said he was “gobsmacked” to learn a pedestrian crossing into the most sought after tourist attractions in the whole of Ireland was not to be. “We are making it virtually impossible for people to cross Mission Road with safety and confidence,” he said. A council engineer said the TII were the lead agency and there was a concern it

could be a rat run at the Monsignor Flaherty statue. Meanwhile, a second move to ease traffic on Mission Road by returning to a two lane system onto New Street Lower has also been given the thumbs down. Cllr Donal Grady had sought a filter lane from Mission Road onto New Street thus returning to the previous arrangement which allowed traffic to flow more smoothly before the Council/TII redesigned it. “This would eliminate the long back-ups which are taking place on Mission Road,” Cllr Grady said. However, he was told that once again the Council had consulted with the TII and while widening to facilitate the two lane approach would reduce queuing times “it is the opinion of the TII that this would compromise pedestrian safety at this location and therefore the TII are not in agreement in reverting to a two-lane approach”.

New Killorglin to Milltown road officially opened The official opening of the N70 Kilderry Bends Improvement Scheme between Milltown and Killorglin was officially opened last Friday. | By Sean Moriarty Several local politicians attended the opening of the new 3.5km section of the main Milltown-Killorglin road between Knockavota and Tinnahall. The €11 million project now provides improved access on one of the busiest routes between the north and south of the county, on a road which is used by

7,000 vehicles daily. A number of dangerous bends have also been removed. The ceremony was led by local TD Brendan Griffin, Minister of State for Tourism and Sport and by Norma Foley, Mayor of Kerry. The project was completed last month by Cork-based Sorensen Civil Engineering Ltd., after approximately 18 months of construction.

Focusing on physio for men's pelvic health

Five million men worldwide will suffer from urinary incontinence - that's one in 20 men. 40 to 80 percent of these men will have ‘urge’ incontinence, i.e. rushing to get to the toilet.

Whilst this can be common following prostate surgery, this should not be seen as normal. These problems are not isolated to prostate surgery either. Pelvic, groin and hip pain is a large problem in running, football, hurling and weightlifting. Treharne Physiotherapy in Killarney provides rehabilitation for: male urinary incontinence, post prostatectomy, erectile/sexual dysfunction and athletic pelvic and hip pain. “Problems that clients report include the inability or fear of exercise, avoiding lifting and bending, and avoiding socialising due to their issue,” Physiotherapist Sam Treharne explained.

“At Treharne Physiotherapy, strength and conditioning training is included as part of recovery. Our facility offers full rehabilitation to match your goals and needs.” Sam qualified in 2010 from Cardiff University and opened his clinic in Ballycasheen in August 2018. Kerry runners complete London Marathon Two Beaufort athletes were amongst the 42,000 runners that finished the London Marathon on Sunday last. Caitriona Shanahan of Killarney Valley Athletic Club and Stephen Griffin of Star of the Laune Athletic Club completed the gruelling course that passed many of London’s landmarks. The race started in Blackheath, near Greenwich and along the way they passed such iconic locations as Tower Bridge, The London Eye and Big Ben before finishing on The Mall in front of Buckingham Palace. Community nurse, Caitriona, who was raising funds for the Killarney Micro Track, which will begin construction next month, finished on a time 4 hours 12 minutes and 17 seconds. It was her second marathon after previously competing the Dublin race at “walking pace”. “It was an amazing experience with thousands of people along the route cheering and shouting,” she said. “It got very difficult with 5k to go, but I just said to myself at that point that I had only a

Lucky escape at Valentia Pier Two US tourists had a lucky escape after their car plunged off a slipway into the sea in Valentia Island on Monday. The couple, who are believed to be in their 70s and staying in Killarney, were travelling in a convoy of three or four other cars. It is understood the driver pressed the accelerator instead of the brakes and plunged the car over the edge of the pier. Local man Mike Moriarty, who was enjoying a drink at the nearby Royal Hotel, jumped in to the water and was able to open the back and side doors of the car, allowing the elderly couple escape. Moriarty was home on holidays from Malta where he works on a yacht. He was alerted to the tourists’ plight when another customer at the bar approached him and said she thought she saw something go off the edge of the pier. When he crossed the street to investigate, he saw a silver Skoda hire car in the water. It is understood that the couple were taken back to their hotel in Killarney by another member of their group, and that apart from shock, their injuries are not serious.

DRUG DRIVING AND THE LAW It is an offence to drive or attempt to drive a vehicle while under the influence of an intoxicant to the point that you cannot keep proper control over the vehicle. An intoxicant includes alcohol, illegal drugs and medicine and any combination of drugs or combination of drugs and alcohol In Ireland it is against the law to drive under the influence of drugs (including prescribed drugs) where a driver uses to such an extent that you do not have proper control of the vehicle and secondly it is against the law to drive under the influence of certain drugs (with regards to driving performance) above specified levels. There are currently three drugs specified – cannabis, cocaine and heroin. If you are found to have any of these drugs above the specified limits, you could be prosecuted for drug driving with no proof of impairment necessary. In April 2017, Gardai were given new powers to conduct preliminary drug testing at the roadside or in Garda Stations. This allows Gardai to establish Check Points for testing drivers for drugs with some

of their powers to existing alcohol testing Check Points. This system will allow Gardai to test a drivers saliva for cannabis, cocaine, opiates and benzodiazepines. If you are taking prescribed medication or over the counter medicines under the advice of your doctor or pharmacist, so long as those medicines don’t impair your driving, this will not create any difficulty. If any doubt arises, you should speak to your doctor or pharmacist about your concerns. A statute Medical Exemption Certificate is provided for in the law for people who have been prescribed medicinal cannabinoids. If this is applicable then the medical certificate should be with the driver at all times while driving.

Good Friday Hospice Walk raises €6,500

Up to 500 walkers took part in this year’s Good Friday Memorial Walk – which was by far the best to date - raising €6,500. The walk, from the Garden Restaurant, Muckross House included two walks, the first via Dinis Cottage and a section of Torc trail back to the restaurant. The second to Brickeen Bridge and return, and is a tribute to the late Vivien O'Shea and Sheila McGillycuddy Kelleher. The weather was just perfect in the scenic setting of the National Park and Muckross Gardens, explained Cathal Walshe, PRO of Killarney Hospice. “The committee are indebted to Danny

O'Keeffe and the park staff, stewards who manned the entry and exit points to the National Park, Colin Baker and staff at the Garden Restaurant, sponsors Killarney Credit Union, Killarney Oaks Hotel Easons, Cliffords Cash and Carry, the O'Shea and Kelleher families, quizmaster Paudie O'Sullivan, Official Starter - the inspirational Ian O'Connell, and especially locals and visitors who contributed so generously in raising such a remarkable amount.”

Angling club reel-in €25K at charity competition

Lough Lein Anglers’ Association chairman Timo O’Sullivan described last Sunday’s annual charity fishing competition as an outstanding success - after over €25,000 was raised for the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Dun Laoghaire. | By Sean Moriarty The annual fishing competition, dubbed ‘The Charity’ by association officials, has in over 32 years, raised nearly €230,000 for various charities. The overall competition was won by Hugh Healy from Mallow who landed six trout. The youth section was won by Bo-

ris Yzic of Killarney. He also finished second overall after he landed seven trout, but narrowly missed out on the overall title by a few grams. The ladies title went to Ann McWilliams from Kanturk. This year the association chose the Dublin based hospital where O’Sullivan recuperated 32 years ago following a work

accident. More recently, Killarney teenager Ian O’Connell was treated there following his 2017 accident. Anglers travelled from all over Ireland to participate in the event, Timo explained. “It was an outstanding success,” he said. “We had set ourselves a big target and we had put in the work in organising the event since February. The money will go towards providing technology for people who have restricted mobility following an accident. Simple things like opening and closing a curtain can be done by technology these days.”

COUNTY COUNCIL

Roundabout unlikely at Madam’s Hill Numbers of private exits onto the N22 at Madam’s Hill and steep ground will make a roundabout unlikely - despite chronic traffic holdups - a Council meeting was told on Wednesday. | By Anne Lucey Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) were contradicting themselves when it came to roundabouts in Killarney, Cllr Brendan Cronin said at the Killarney Municipal District meeting in the Town Hall, after his request for a roundabout at Madam’s Hill Junction was rejected by the Council and TII. “A roundabout at this extremely busy junction would have tremendous benefits for safety by both reducing the speed

of traffic exiting Cleeny and give ample opportunity for traffic exiting from the Aghadoe side,” Cllr Cronin said. “Right now those trying to get onto the N22 from Aghadoe had to depend on the good will of motorists from Tralee.” However, the Council said a roundabout at the location would be “very challenging”. It detailed the “very steep downhill approach” from Aghadoe and the N22, and said this could lead to vehicles “running through” a roundabout at the location leading to further accidents.

There was limited land for a roundabout, the meeting was told. The unequal volume of traffic with volumes on the N22 much greater than the Aghadoe approach would result in "an unbalanced flow" and might actually leave people trying to get out from Aghadoe waiting even longer, the Council also said. A roundabout at this location would also have a number of private entrances on the exit arms which will need access to the N22. “For the reasons outlined above, a roundabout is unlikely to be proposed as the solution,” it continued. However, Cllr Cronin “rounded” on the rejection.

“There’s a hill coming down Christy McSweeney’s corner and people are coping very well with a roundabout there,” he said, giving another example in Killorglin town. At Lewis Road a roundabout with exits to Kilcummin had been put forward as a means of actually slowing traffic, the Independent councillor added. “I reject totally the response given,” Cllr Cronin said. “There’s a complete contradiction in TII with regard to roundabouts. I urge them to use the same methodology as Lewis Road for Madam’s Hill Junction,” he said. He has now made a further proposal, seconded by Mayor John Sheahan, to go back to the drawing board. “We can see the congestion there every morning. It’s very frustrating. We need a resolution,” the Mayor said.

“Number of unoccupied and derelict houses is frightening” – says Mayor With over one thousand on the housing list in Killarney, the number of unoccupied houses in Killarney town is “frightening”, the Killarney Municipal District Council meeting was told on Wednesday. | By Anne Lucey

Killarney Cycling Club plan new event Killarney Cycling Club will organise a new Sportive event the ‘Twin Peaks Challenge’ on Sunday, May 12 to raise funds for youth development within the club. Starting from Killarney Community College at 9am, two routes are offered, an 80km run that takes in Kilgarvan, Kenmare and Moll’s Gap, and a longer 100km run over The Top of Coom which will re-join the shorter version at Kilgarvan. Killarney Cycling Club and its members are enjoying huge national and local success at the moment. Conor Kissane has won The Lacey Cup as well as the Billy Nolan Cup, and also rode for Team Ireland on the recent Ras Munham. Last weekend John Brosnan took the win at The Drumm Cup road race in Currow ensuring all major Kerry cycling cups are now held by KCC members. Buoyed by this success, the club was keen to run an event to raise funds for the youth arm of the club. “This is open to members and non-members,” said KCC committee member and

youth coach Mike Kissane. “It will suit leisure cyclists and road racers. We are very lucky that the senior members like John and Conor put a lot of time in to the underage section of the club. We have a big three-day event for youths in Kanturk this weekend. Funds raised from the Sportive will go directly back into the youth section of the club. We have seven or eight coaches trained to Cycling Ireland level.” Killarney Cycling Club Youth Development Program has been up and running for the last eight years, he added. “With the youth keeping a close eye on the pathway the seniors have furrowed, a lot of work and much effort goes into training and racing with our youth. Plans are already in place for Junior tours and the next generation of Ras and Ras Munham racers. Like all things this all costs money, so with that in mind we've put this Sportive in place to fund the future of both boys and girls racing in Killarney and beyond,” Committee Member John Dillon added.

Mayor of Killarney, John Sheahan, raised the issue in the Town Hall, saying he wanted management to come up with legislation to “speed up the process” of making empty and derelict houses available for people seeking accommodation - especially at a time when housing was in such demand. “The number of unoccupied and derelict houses is frightening,” Mayor Sheahan said, listing Rock Road, as well as The Concrete, as examples of where numbers of privately owned houses are unoccupied. One of the strategic objectives of the Government’s Rebuilding Ireland plan was indeed greater use “and reuse” of vacant properties and homes, the Council said in a report to Cllr Sheahan. However, it was a complex area - houses could be vacant because they were second homes, their owners away or in residential care, or because of issues to do with title and being derelict. In Kerry, “fundamental surveys” on the ground were needed to establish the extent and the reason. The Council is to focus on “a systematic engagement with vacant home own-

ers” and this will include options under the various Government repair, lease and sale schemes. “Where there is no prospect of progress, all alternatives will be considered including pursuing options under Derelict Sites legislation and Compulsory Powers,” it said. Pilot projects in other local authorities such as Louth, which had delivered a limited number of units through the CPO process, would be looked at. And there was provision in law for a Derelict Site Act to be taken over by the Council. Currently a small number of properties were being examined by the local authority in Kerry to see if they could be placed on the Derelict Sites Register. “In addition, going forward, it is our intention to consider any suitable properties for action under CPO,” the Council said. Right now the Council was reluctant to go down the Compulsory Purchase Option (CPO), Administrative Officer, Timmy Brosnan, told the meeting. “It is the last option on our list,” Mr Brosnan said, after Councillor Maura Healy-Rae and others said houses could be unoccupied for a variety of reasons.

Julia celebrates 70th in the Heights Hotel Julia O’Grady had a night to remember, surrounded by family and friends, as she celebrated her 70th birthday at The Killarney Heights Hotel on Saturday night. Julia, who now lives in St Mary’s Terrace in Killarney, is better known as a resident of the Ardshanavooly estate in town, having lived there from the mid 1960s until just two years ago. Born in Milton Keynes, England to her Cork father and English mother, she moved to Killarney when her father decided to come back to Ireland and chose to settle in Killarney. Saturday’s bash was organised by two of her eight children, daughters Dorothy and Denise, but it being such a large family not everyone could make it. “I have 27 grandchildren but not all of them were there,” she said. “It was a brilliant night, sitting around chatting about old times. My two daughters planned it all but it is very hard to get everyone together.”

GARDEN MAGIC

Gardening - By Debby Looney

Debby is available for advice and garden consultations, just call 086 6088156 or email barnhillky@gmail.com

The best way to grow herbs Last week I wrote a piece about herb gardens, so this week I’m going to concentrate on the herbs themselves. Having written about design, it makes complete sense to move on to the plants themselves. Herbs can tolerate relatively poor soil as many come from Mediterranean countries. Thyme, oregano, sage, marjoram and rosemary would fall into this category. A light sandy or stony soil suits them well, as opposed to a heavier or richer soil. Their flavour is sweeter and more concentrated; tending towards bland if the soil is too rich. On the other hand, parsley, tarragon and fennel need a deeper soil to thrive. Parsley is a woodland plant, preferring dappled shade and fertile soil. It becomes bitter if nutrients are lacking, or if it gets too much sun. Chives likewise, need good soil to thrive. I have found that, if the plant in question is woody, like thyme, bay, or rosemary, it generally tastes and grows better in a dry, sunny environment. If the plant is leafy and soft, such as parsley, mint or lovage, it needs a damp, fertile spot, to prevent the bitterness or blandness. Some herbs have a nasty habit of taking over, and need to be planted in containers, to prevent them taking over. Mint is the best example of this. It is a real thug once it gets going, and should always be planted in something to contain it. However, it needs plenty of water and feeding, or it turns bitter. Therefore, always

repot your mint every year. Other herbs which creep underground and pop up out of nowhere are tarragon, lemon balm and nettles. Nettles are classed as herbs – they are used like spinach, and the young leaves are actually quite tender and tasty. They are high in vitamins A and C as well as containing iron, calcium and potassium. There are two types of tarragon: French and Russian, the French having a sweeter taste. Herbs such as dill, coriander and basil are very tender. The best way to grow them is under protection, and frequent sowing gives you a continuous crop. Both dill and coriander go to seed very quickly and are best used entirely when young, rather than waiting for them to grow into a larger plant. They are annuals and programmed to go from seed to maturity in a very short space of time! Some general guidelines for growing herbs: in the case of herbs such as chives, Chinese chives, garlic chives, marjoram, and mint, split them annually or at least every three years to keep them vigorous. Set a sharp spade into the clump any time between autumn and April, discard the old (middle) part and replant the new growth. Clip back all herbs, if you are not using them regularly, as they tend to go quite woody. Finally, discard parsley plants every year, as they go bitter after a year or two. They have a tap root, which can be cooked also – so nothing is wasted!

Tricel shortlisted for HR Leadership and Management award A Killarney business, which focuses on supporting their employees, has been shortlisted for a national award. Tricel, a family owned manufacturing and engineering company based in the Tiernaboul Industrial Estate, has been shortlisted for the Best Health and Well-being Strategy category in the HR Leadership and Management Awards 2019. The company exports products to over 50 countries worldwide, employs 150 staff in Killarney, and a further 300 employees are based across more than 10 locations throughout Ireland, UK and France. Winners will be announced at a gala awards ceremony on Thursday, May 9, at The Round Room, The Mansion House, Dublin. A key focus of Tricel’s HR agenda is supporting the health and well-being of employees both inside and outside of the workplace through the application of a multi-faceted health and well-being strategy. To begin with, the company’s flexitime system operates to great success within the organisation and provides excellent work/life balance for employees. Another supportive meas-

ure includes a sick pay scheme to alleviate financial hardship due to an illness or injury. Further to these practical well-being measures the company has in recent years introduced an annual Wellness Week, which consists of an extended programme of activities and information, for example, fitness activities, cooking demonstrations and mindfulness tips. Tricel also established a Sports and Social Club, with a regular programme of activities throughout the year to provide opportunities for new and current staff to interact in a social environment. “Well-being is very important at Tricel because we recognise that our people are our greatest asset, and effective well-being programs provide a wealth of benefits to both our business operations and our employees,” Colette O’Donoghue, Head of HR at Tricel said. “We are looking forward to sharing many of the insights we have gained when attending the upcoming awards night.”

CHALLANGE: Kevin Curran with Betsy as he prepares for a 1,400km vintage tractor trip this weekend.

Kerry farmer plans epic 1,400km vintage tractor trip A retired Kerry sheep farmer is preparing for a 1,400km journey on his vintage tractor to raise crucial funds for the Irish Cancer Society’s cancer research. Kevin Curran, from Waterville, lost his wife Eileen to cancer in 2009. Ever since he has ploughed his efforts into raising over €75,000 for cancer research through a number of tractor runs, including one across Route 66, in 2012. The 75-year-old decided it was time to take ‘Betsy’, a 50-year-old vintage trac-

tor, out of retirement this year. Together with a small support group of friends they will tackle a route the length of Great Britain, from John O’Groats to Land’s End in the UK. “We are raising the money for cancer research so that one day we can stop this terrible disease. My wife Eileen died from cancer 10 years ago, and

more people are being diagnosed with it every year, so it’s something that I’m passionate about,” he said. “We think it will take us about five days to complete the journey, if we manage to clock up 200 miles each day. There will be a team of five altogether and we all take turns with the driving, starting from about 9am until well after dark. We will be out there whatever the weather – rain won’t stop us!” Betsy, which was named by Eileen before she died, was shipped to the UK on Wednesday of this week.

Trump to visit Ireland US President Donald Trump could visit Ireland as part of his extended visit to Britain and France next month. Last week, Trump announced he would visit the United Kingdom between June 3 and 5, after receiving an invitation from Queen Elizabeth. On June 6, he will travel to France to meet French President Emmanuel Macron. There has been increased speculation that Trump will add Ireland to his European schedule. On Thursday of this week, there were reports in the national media

that members of the US Secret Service (USSS) were in Clare. The Irish Independent said the USSS was there “to scope out logistics and security arrangements for a presidential visit.” Leo Varadkar has said there's a pos-

Expensive dog’s dinner A pet dog in Wales has cost his owners nearly £300 - after eating £160 worth of £20 notes – with an added cost of £130 in vet’s bills. Ozzie, a nine-year-old labradoodle, pounced when an envelope containing the cash was pushed through the letterbox of Neil and Judith Wright's homed in Llandudno, North Wales. The couple took Ozzie to the vet who managed to retrieve the money by inducing him to vomit, - landing them a bill of £130. "Someone had owed us money and popped it through the letterbox for us, that's how Ozzie got hold of it,” Judith told Sky News. A spokesman for Murphy & Co Veterinary Practice in Llandudno, where Ozzie was taken, said owners can expect to pay around £130 to induce vomiting in a dog. She said the practice often deals with dogs who had eaten things they shouldn't, including toilet items and socks, but it was the first time they treated an animal who had scoffed cash.

sibility Trump will visit Ireland next month. "US Secret Service mustn't be all that secret if the media found out about the visit,” Varadkar told The Irish Independent. "There's a possibility of a visit in June. The President is going to be in Europe. But we've had no confirmation of it at this stage." A White House decision on whether or not Mr Trump will visit his golf resort in Doonbeg, Co Clare, during a trip to Europe in June is not expected until next week at the earliest. Mr Trump has said he intends to visit Ireland this year. It is also unclear if he will visit on a personal capacity or if it will be an official state visit.

Rapid response vehicle to save lives in North Kerry and West Limerick A Rapid Response vehicle, dedicated to medical emergencies in North Kerry and West Limerick, was launched this week – and is set to save lives across the counties.

Kíla to headline Milltown Fleadh Kíla are excited to be hitting the road and heading back to the Kingdom - to headline the Fleadh Cheoil Chiarraí Street Music Festival on June 22 - as part of a huge range of free entertainment over the five days. Kíla have played all over the world, and, while rooted in tradition, they are inspired by a myriad of musical influences worldwide. Softly spoken off stage and complete lunatics on it, Kíla have torn up the rulebook with their wantonly eclectic mix of styles. Kíla's eight members stem from differing musical backgrounds, including Irish traditional, classical, folk and rock. The BBC described Kila as "One of the most beautifully euphoric live experiences", while Bono remarked “you get the feeling Kíla lit the fuse for the big bang!”, after seeing them live. Kila play on the Gig Rig, the open air stage in the square in Milltown. Ronán O’Snodaigh is no stranger to Milltown, having headlined with Liam O’Maonlaoi at the World Bodhrán Championships, in 2010. The Fleadh organising committee are thrilled to welcome Kíla. “We work hard to promote traditional music and Kíla are a perfect act for this year. Our 2019 fleadh theme of ‘Lighting up tomorrow with trad’ is encapsulated by everything Kíla do,” PRO Chris Horan

said. “We welcome all music lovers to Milltown to celebrate our unique tradition with a selection of local musicians and Kíla on June 22. Kila will be sure to make the 2019 Fleadh a memorable one. You don’t forget a Kíla gig. If any group of musicians can be credited with breathing new life into Irish traditional music over recent years, then that group is Kíla,” Fleadh Chairman Vincent Prendergast added. Kíla headline the Saturday night street music, and will be supported by local groups, with music from 6.30pm to 11pm. The Fleadh opens on Wednesday, June 19 and that night will feature the ‘Singing Club’. Competitions will run throughout the week in the Nagle Rice Community Hall and the Presentation Secondary School. Thursday night will include sessions in local bars, and Friday night will see the return of The Shandrum Ceili Band for the first of two open-air ceilidh. Saturday will feature Kíla and local acts, while Sunday will be a day-long family day of music and kids’ entertainment.

The service is being coordinated by Irish Community Rapid Response (ICRR) and involves volunteer doctors, working alongside frontline HSE emergency services, to respond to life-threatening emergencies. The state-of-the-art vehicle is a Renault Kadjar Crossover, supported by Renault Ireland, and is based in Listowel led by local volunteer Dr Andrei Brovchin. The service will cover a broad area including Tralee, Listowel, Ballybunion,

Tarbert, Foynes, Newcastle West, Abbeyfeale and Castleisland. The ICRR led service will work alongside the National Ambulance Service. Volunteer doctors will be tasked via the 999/112 call system at the National Emergency Operations Centre to attend serious life-threatening emergencies. “All the evidence tells us that having the right treatment in the right place as soon as possible is the key to saving lives in cardiac arrest patients. By equipping volunteer doctors and responders with the tools to react quickly within their own communities, they have the best possible chance of getting to patients within the most crucial window of opportunity for survival,” Dr Brovchin said.

100 new jobs for Tralee JRI America, Inc., announced on Thursday that it is to further expand its Technology Centre in Tralee - creating 100 new jobs over five years. Since 2011, when JRI America, Inc., established in Ireland, it has successfully grown its team in Tralee to 100 staff. The project is supported by the Irish Government through IDA Ireland. JRI America, Inc., is a subsidiary of the Japanese IT financial services company, Japan Research Institute Ltd., which is the specialist IT subsidiary of Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group. JRI America, Inc., now plans to expand its Tralee Technology Centre with the creation of a Security Operations Centre involving roles across a range of security-related functions including Se-

curity Operations and Security Event/ Incident Monitoring. “The jobs created by JRI America, Inc., continue to contribute positively to our rural communities and to the strengthening and diversification of the wider economy of Kerry. I welcome today’s announcement that JRI America, Inc., will continue to focus on supporting jobs in this region steadily over the next five years,” said Minister of State Brendan Griffin. In 2011, JRI established its Technology Centre in Tralee, to support its Western Hemisphere operations in the Americas and EMEA. This operation currently employs 100 people and has recently moved into new, larger offices in Tralee to facilitate the doubling of its headcount to 200 people over the next five years.

Focus on your skin It’s never been so important to look after your skin – as it’s the forefront of every photo posted on social media! Make-up always goes on better if your skin is in top notch condition. Having a regular facial can help set up your skin to receive your products to the best of their ability, as your skin will be deeply exfoliated, relaxed, hydrated and primed. Salon treatment and home care equals results. With a basic facial it will definitely make a difference to your skin condition. From listening to client’s needs and wants over the last 15 years, I can really understand what they’re looking for before they know themselves - it is my job after all. You’d call an electrician if you had an issue with your electrics, so I find people that call in for a skin consultation really want to know the best advice I have to offer about skincare. They have heard all the myths and tried all the lotions and potions - but for real skincare results you go to the experts. I really feel that with my

many years of dealing with different skin conditions, issues and clients, I have the tools and products to really make a difference. Sothys cosmeceuticals range has been 70 years in the making. They own their own laboratory and can really make a difference in a short time. One of my clients who actually hadn’t been with me in five years, as life is so busy, came back a month after her first facial, and told me the difference in her skin is amazing. She even commented that the product she got, Sothys Energizing Night Cream, now only needs to be applied in a very minimal way compared to her other products, as her skin has improved so much. Parknasilla joins sales mission in America Tourism Ireland, together with a delegation of Irish tourism companies – including Parknasilla Resort & Spa – undertook a sales blitz to the US – meeting, and doing business with, hundreds of travel professionals in Chicago, Dallas and Boston. Tourism Minister, Brendan Griffin, joined the sales mission in Boston, where he met influential travel professionals and journalists. The schedule included a B2B event in each city, with an interactive presentation showcasing Ireland – giving the participating companies, including Parknasilla Resort & Spa, a platform to promote and sell to the key American decision-makers in attendance. It included opportunities for networking with travel and lifestyle journalists and influencers. Tourism Ireland also introduced its new campaign, ‘Fill Your Heart With Ireland’, to the travel professionals in each city. A key message for Tourism Ireland was ease of access to Ireland from the US – and, in particular, the new Aer Lingus flight from Dallas to Dublin which will launch in June. “2018 was the sixth consecutive record year for visitor numbers to the island of Ireland from North America,” Brendan Griffin TD, Minister of State for Tourism and Sport, said. In 2018, we welcomed over two million American and Canadian visitors, delivering revenue of €1.85 billion for the economy. Boston and the east

coast of the United States are important sources of US visitors to Ireland and events like this provide a vital opportunity to highlight what is new and exciting in Ireland to influential local travel trade and media.” Alison Metcalfe, Tourism Ireland’s Head of North America, added that the ‘Fill Your Heart With Ireland’ sales blitz to Chicago, Dallas and Boston provided an excellent platform to spread the word about the many great things to see and do right around the island of Ireland and Kerry in 2019. “It’s a really good platform for our tourism partners from Ireland to inform and influence the travel professionals they meet about what Ireland has to offer and, importantly, to encourage them to include the destination in their future brochures and programmes.” This was the second stage of the 2019 series of ‘Fill Your Heart With Ireland’ sales blitzes. The programme kicked off at the end of February, taking in Boca Raton (Florida), Washington DC and Atlanta (Georgia). Similar events will take place on the west coast of the US in late 2019.

Celebrities lead Killarney automotive expo Former Top Gear presenter and UK-based motoring journalist, Quentin Willson, joined Hollywood A lister and racing driver, Michael Fassbender, as guests at the annual Electronomous conference in the INEC yesterday (Thursday) afternoon.

New Garda BMW on the way to Kerry The Kerry Garda Division is to get one new BMW X5 – as nine of the high-powered estate cars were delivered to various stations across the country this week. The new batch of X5s have been assigned to Dublin Metropolitan, Eastern, Southern and Northern Garda Regions. They will be operating in counties Carlow, Cavan, Cork, Donegal, Dublin, Kerry, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Leitrim, Louth, Meath, Monaghan, Offaly, Sligo, Tipperary, Limerick, Waterford, West-

meath, Wexford, Wicklow. “There is one new car on the way that covers the Kerry Division,” said a Garda spokesperson. “The car is for the Armed Support Unit so it will cover Limerick and Kerry.” The cheapest BMW X5 to buy in Ireland retails at €65,000.

Local hero Fassbender is in town as he is participating in this weekend’s cartell.ie Rally of the Lakes. The conference brings together industry leaders in connected cars, autonomous vehicles, alternative power trains and mobility, and is organised by the sponsors of the rally. Willson acted as conference host over

the last two days where he discussed the future of the automotive industry with the likes of John Cormican, Jaguar Land Rover Ireland Vehicle Engineering and Maik Stephan, Volkswagen’s Group Strategy Director. The conference closed on Thursday lunchtime with Fassbender and Willson enjoying a Q&A session on the future of the car, on the INEC’s main stage. Fans, tourists and townsfolk will get two more chances to meet Willson and Fassbender tonight (Friday) as they will be attending the ceremonial start of the cartell.ie Rally of the Lakes in the Fair Hill car park from 6pm, and a rally forum at Scott’s Hotel, at 8pm.

Car run raises €500 for lifeboat service A local group of Opel and Vauxhall enthusiasts raised over €500 for the Castletownbere Lifeboat Service during their tour of the Beara Peninsula last Sunday. Members of the Kerry branch of the Opel Vauxhall Club Ireland organised the tour which followed traditional rally routes via Ardgroom, Cod’s Head and the Healy Pass. Over 30 cars started from Helen’s Bar in Kilmackillogue, with the oldest two cars being a 1973 Vauxhall Viva and a 1974 Vauxhall Chevette. “It went very well,” Paul Horan, local club

member, said. “All the money will stay with the local lifeboat. The timing was right as it was launched in Friday night during Storm Hannah. They came from all over. One member drove a Calibra down from Belfast to do the run.” The next local Opel Vauxhall Club Ireland will take place next weekend with a run over Ballaghbeama Gap and on the roads near Caragh Lake.

the U16 Boys Competition and Seán Slemon from Moyvane, who claimed third in the U17 Boys, who was already crowned All-Ireland Champion earlier in the year. Mark’s sister Saoirse added to the haul of world medals by winning one in the U13 Girls Competition. Dancers Eloise O’ Doherty, Ellen Burke, Liam Healy and Emma Kent all made

it through to the final rounds of their perspective competitions and brought home four more medals. “These dancers worked tirelessly over the past few months to prepare for these World Championships and their success in Greensboro made it the school’s most successful World Championships to date,” Aine Murphy, Head Teacher, said.

Minister Flanagan congratulates 2,400 new Irish citizens The Minister for Justice and Equality, Charlie Flanagan TD, welcomed 2,400 new Irish citizens across three citizenship ceremonies held in the INEC, on Monday. The Presiding Officers on the day were Retired High Court Judge Bryan McMahon and Retired District Court Judge Paddy McMahon. Those granted citizenship at the ceremonies originate from over 90 countries, including 406 people from Poland and 309 from the UK. “You will take an oath of fidelity to our nation and loyalty to our State,” Minister Flanagan said. “You will do so in the knowledge that this relatively young State – still less

than a century since our independence was gained – is a place of culture where traditions are cherished, and history is ever-present. And be sure, too, that this State is a place of diversity and openness.” Citizenship ceremonies were first introduced in 2011 in order to mark the occasion of the granting of citizenship in a dignified and solemn manner. Monday’s ceremonies bring the total number of ceremonies held since then to 141, where people from over 180 countries will have received their certificates of naturalisation. Including minors, over 122,000 people will have received Irish citizenship since 2011 following the ceremonies.

Jon Kenny to star in ‘Crowman’ D’Unbelievables comedian Jon Kenny will perform in ‘Crowman’ tonight in Tech Amergin Arts Centre, at 8pm. Set in a sparsely decorated kitchen, this intimate one-man show starring Jon Kenny feels like a window into the soul of a lonely bachelor, Dan. A crow-hating man who noisily tries to shoo the blighted birds away, Dan measures out his life by the amount of funerals he has to attend every week. The play received standing ovations every night during a run in Cork Midsummer festival at the Granary. In it, Jon plays numerous characters - but the primary one is Dan, a man in his 50s who is living alone. When he hears about the passing of a dear friend, he is forced to look back on his own troubled youth and face up to his demons. The play is at times poignant and tragic but also has warmth and humour as Jon slips seamlessly in and out of the many uproariously funny characters. Tickets are €20 and pre-booking is advised on 066 9478956. ............................................................

Don’t grieve for me, for now I’m free, I follow the plan God laid for me, I saw his face, I heard his call, I took his hand and left it all... I could not stay another day, To love, to laugh, to work or play; Tasks left undone must stay that way, And if my parting has left a void, Then fill it with remembered joy, A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss.. Ah yes these things I too shall miss, My life’s been full, I’ve savored much: Good times, good friends, a loved one’s touch, Perhaps my time seemed all too brief, Don’t shorten yours with undue grief, Be not burdened with tears of sorrow, Enjoy the sunshine of tomorrow. Healy-Rae defends Delaney comments

Kerry TD Michael Healy-Rae was widely condemned for not grilling John Delaney at the Oireachtas. Pic: Don MacMonagle.

TD criticises “abhorrent” FAI practices but says he won’t forget ex-CEO’s support of Kerry Michael Healy-Rae has defended his decision to back John Delaney at the Oireachtas Committee for Sport but the Kerry TD has also admitted that some of the latest revelations in the FAI scandal are “totally abhorrent” to him. Healy-Rae was heavily criticised for not using his questioning time at the Oireachtas to grill the embattled former CEO but speaking to the Killarney Advertiser this week, the Kilgarvan politician said he had Kerry’s best interests at heart. “If I’m thankful to people who have supported Kerry, I won’t change my view on that,” he said. “And whether their name is John Delaney, or it’s a government minister, or a department official, who is good to County Kerry, I will thank them for that and I won’t forget it.” At his appearance in Leinster House on April 10, Healy-Rae made reference to Castleisland AFC’s new all-weather pitch and assured Delaney that he would receive “the mother of all welcomes” when he came to Kerry to officially open the facility. “If you’re guilty of anything,” Healy-Rae said, “you’re guilty of trying to help an association.” “Your personal reputation is second to none.” Delaney, who is currently on gardening leave, was subsequently removed from the official FAI delegation and he was not present at the opening of Georgie O’Callaghan Park on Saturday.

REVELATIONS

The FAI and Delaney were called before the Oireachtas Committee last month when details of a €100,000 bridging loan, which was given to the association by Delaney, were revealed in the Sunday Times. The same paper later reported that Delaney spent €40,000 on his company credit card in a six-month period. FAI accounts also show payments totalling €60,000 that were made in 2013 and 2014 to Delaney’s then girlfriend, Susan Keegan. Sport Ireland have since suspended state funding to Irish soccer’s governing body and their auditors, Deloitte, have reported the FAI to the Companies Office for failing to keep proper accounting records. Directors Eddie Murray and Michael Cody have already resigned and the FAI have confirmed that the entire board will be stepping down at their AGM in July.

John Delaney’s future within the FAI is in serious doubt following a string of recent allegations. Pic: Sportsfile.

When asked if his position on John Delaney had changed since the Oireachtas Committee, Healy-Rae confirmed that it had. “Of course, the benefit of hindsight is great,” he said. “We all know a lot more now about the running of the FAI than we did a month ago. “One of the most shocking things to me is that the people who were doing the accounts all along, all of a sudden, when this whole thing came to light, reported the accountancy practices. I think that’s amazing. How come they didn’t do that long ago? “There are things now with the FAI that would be totally abhorrent to me, but I’m not going to forget the good work that was done in Kerry because of that. I’m not going to join the national media, who don’t want Kerry to get anything. “To the people who want to be critical of the things that I said, I’d ask them which part of the money that came to Kerry would they say that we’d be better off without?” Critics of Healy-Rae’s performance before the Oireachtas Committee say that Delaney was undeserving of such lavish praise, irrespective of his supposed service to Kerry soccer. The controversial former head of the FAI was a persona non grata to many Irish soccer supporters long before the latest scandal hit the headlines. A recent opinion piece by this journalist, which accused Healy-Rae and Kerry District League officials of misrepresenting the Kerry soccer community, received an overwhelmingly positive response. Meanwhile, Uefa have confirmed that Delaney will not be attending this month’s European U17 Championships in an official capacity.

As Phase 1 of the club football season comes to an end, let’s take a look at how the teams have fared so far.

A

AUSTIN STACKS

Record: (W4 L2) - Intermediate: Semi-finalists - Div 2: 7th

THE GOOD: It has been a near-perfect start to the season for the Rockies. They made light work of their group in the Club Championship and were good value for their five-point win over Dr Crokes in the final. THE BAD: The opening day County League defeat to fellow Division 1 newcomers Kilcummin has been the only blip to date. TOP OF THE CLASS: Free-scoring teenager Seán Quilter has caught the eye. He registered 0-27 in four championship outings for the men from Connolly Park. OUTLOOK: Wayne Quillinan’s side appear to be well-placed to mount a serious challenge in this year’s County Championship. Their lack of Kerry players could also play into their hands when it comes to the league. UP NEXT: Div 1 – Dr Crokes (H), Rathmore (A), Rahilly’s (H), Dingle (A), Tem-

plenoe (A).

THE GOOD: Glenflesk topped their group in the Intermediate thanks to solid wins over Beaufort, Desmonds and John Mitchels. That crucial win over Mitchels was particularly impressive as they came from behind despite being down to 14 men. THE BAD: Paud O’Donoghue’s side never showed up against Templenoe in the Intermediate semi-final and ended up losing by 15 points. TOP OF THE CLASS: Patrick D’Arcy. The skilful forward was a member of the victorious Kerry minor team in 2018 and he has already sparkled in his first year at senior level. OUTLOOK: Attention turns to the County League and a top three finish (and promotion to Division 1) is a realistic goal. UP NEXT: Div 2 – Brosna (A), Annascaul (H), Ardfert (A), Dromid (H), Ken-

mare (H).

LEGION

Record: (W3 L3) - Senior Club: Runners-Up - Div 1: 7th

THE GOOD: With all this talk of Crokes struggling, it’s important to note that they still made the final of the Club Championship and they’ve beaten fierce rivals Legion and Kerins O’Rahilly’s (twice) already this season. THE BAD: The Crokes have lost three of their last six matches and the reigning county champions have failed to win consecutive games since the All-Ireland final defeat to Corofin. Losing Gavin White to a dislocated elbow was a blow.

B

Record: (W3 L2) - Senior Club: 2nd in Group 2 - Div 1: 3rd

THE GOOD: Legion were unfortunate not to top the Group of Death after impressive wins over Rahilly’s and Rathmore. That second half in Rathbeg was particularly encouraging. They also defeated Dingle in the first round of the County League. THE BAD: Defeats at the hands of neighbours Dr Crokes and Spa were tough to take, especially as they led in both games. OUTLOOK: Daithí Casey, Fionn Fitzgerald and Tony Brosnan are all rumoured to be heading away for the summer but the Lewis Road club will be back to full strength for the Kerry SFC. Still the team to beat.

Record: (W3 L2) - Intermediate: 2nd in Group 4 - Div 1: 9th

THE GOOD: Late scores from Mikey and Conor Geaney helped Dingle to secure a narrow 1-14 to 0-15 win over Kenmare in Round 2 of the Club Championship and they followed that up with a dominant victory away to Kilcummin.

THE GOOD: Spa will have enjoyed the comeback win against Legion in the league and Evan Cronin’s last gasp goal against Glenbeigh/Glencar kept them alive in the Intermediate.

THE BAD: Losing to Stacks in Round 1 left last year’s County Championship finalists chasing shadows.

THE BAD: Defeat to Templenoe in Round 1 of the championship left Spa in a tough position. They won their remaining games but the damage had been done.

TOP OF THE CLASS: Conor Geaney. The young corner forward, who got a call-up to the Kerry seniors this year, kicked 1-6 in that victory over Kenmare. 1-2 of that total came in the first seven minutes alone. OUTLOOK: Kerry star Paul Geaney has struggled with a back injury and hasn’t quite hit top form this season. Dingle will need him approaching his best to be in with a chance of winning silverware. UP NEXT: Div 1 – Spa (A), Rahilly’s (H), St Mary’s (H), Stacks (H), Kilcummin

(A).

TOP OF THE CLASS: Energetic half forward Ryan O’Carroll has been one of their more consistent performers. OUTLOOK: Division 1 looks fairly open this year and Spa proved last year that they can make waves in the top flight. Being unseeded in the East Kerry Championship places Ivor Flynn’s side at a disadvantage but they are capable of beating senior teams on their day. RAHILLY’S

C

Record: (W2 L3) - Senior Club: 3rd in Group 2 - Div 1: 6th

THE GOOD: County players Tommy Walsh and Gavin O’Brien have fared well in the green and gold and Rahilly’s enjoyed a six-point win over Tralee rivals Na Gaeil in the league opener. THE BAD: After beating Rathmore in their first game in the championship,

Rahilly’s missed out on a good chance to take command of Group 2 when they lost to Legion in Round 2. Injuries to Walsh, O’Brien and David Moran certainly haven’t helped.

TOP OF THE CLASS: Jack Savage is a constant scoring threat. OUTLOOK: Capable of beating anyone in championship but they’ll miss Walsh and O’Brien in the league. UP NEXT: Div 1 – Rathmore (H), Dingle (A), Stacks (A), Templenoe (H), An Ghaeltacht (A).

Ryan O'Carroll has been in fine form for Spa. Pic: Paudie Healy.

KENMARE

C

Record: (W2 L3) - Senior Club: 3rd in Group 1 - Div 2: 8th

THE GOOD: A narrow one-point win over Kilcummin in Round 1 of the championship was enough to secure their senior status for another year. THE BAD: Poor start overall for the Division 2 club. They beat Annascaul by a point in the league before losing to Beaufort by four. They then defeated Kilcummin in the championship before losing to Dingle and eventual winners Austin Stacks. TOP OF THE CLASS: Seán O’Shea has been flying for club, college and county. The 20-year-old is a player Kenmare will be able to depend on for years to come. OUTLOOK: Kenmare are 50/1 outsiders for the Kerry SFC but they will be hoping to challenge for promotion back to Division 1 of the County League. UP NEXT: Div 2 – Ardfert (A), John Mitchels (H), Dromid (H), Ballymac (H), Glenflesk (A).

THE GOOD: Two wins from two in Division 1 of the County League including a brilliant 1-11 to 0-9 victory over Stacks in Connolly Park

THE BAD: Liam Hassett’s outfit were top of Group 2 with 20 minutes to play in the Legion game but things completely fell apart in the final quarter. They now have a relegation playoff to look forward to.

THE BAD: It was a bad month for clubs for the reigning All-Ireland Intermediate Champions. They finished up winless with a points difference of -26. Another injury to star player Kevin McCarthy was a huge blow.

diate but stayed up by beating Desmonds on the last day. Currently in first place in Division 2 of the County League.

FIRIES (B-): Firies will be disappointed with their showing in the champion-

ship but they retained their Junior Premier status with victory over Skellig Rangers. Joint top of Division 3.

CURROW (C+): Mixed bag for Currow so far but they will be an Intermediate club again in 2020 following their hard-fought 0-14 to 0-12 win over Brosna in the playoffs. LISTRY (C): Listry have three points from four in Division 3 but they lost all three group games in the Junior Premier. They subsequently defeated Lispole by 10 points in the relegation playoff semi-final. FOSSA (C-): Frustrating start to the season for Fossa. Avoided the Junior Premier relegation playoffs by beating St Michael's-Foilmore but lost their first four games in all comps. The absence of Paudie Clifford (injured) has been a major factor.

Ruby Rally of 70

3.05.2019

| By Sean Moriarty

The biggest sporting occasion in the country this weekend will be the 40th running of the Cartell.ie Rally of the Lakes, which gets underway from Killarney on Friday night. Killarney and District Motor Club have pulled out all the stops to mark the event’s ruby anniversary in style. A star-studded and capacity entry, a new and challenging route, a host of side events and celebrity guests from a range of spectrums will make it a weekend to remember in Killarney The celebrations get underway on Friday evening with the traditional ceremonial start in the Fair Hill Car Park in the town. This will give fans their first opportunity to meet the 150 contestants and see the cars for the first time. Each competitor will go over the start ramp at the College Street exit of the car park, led by the Ford Fiesta R5 of Craig Breen and local co-driver Paul Nagle. Each competitor will be interviewed on the ramp by RTÉ broadcasting legend and rally enthusiast Michael Lyster, to the backdrop of traditional music led by local star Liam O’Connor. Members of the Killarney Valley Vintage and Classic Car Club will display some of their classic machinery and several rally cars of historical importance will also be on static display. It will also be the public’s first opportunity meet event ambassador, Hollywood A-lister and local man Michael Fassbender and to see the Ford Escort Mk2 he will drive. “This is a huge family occasion,” said

clerk of the course Dermot Healy. “Come down, see the cars and meet the stars.” Activity in Fair Hill Car park will start around 5pm and will run until around 8pm when the action shifts to the Scott’s Gardens auditorium in the same area. Here, Lyster and other well-known motoring and motorsport broadcasters will interview some of the top drivers contesting this year’s rally. This event is also free and open to the public but is likely to fill fast so early arrival is advised.

SPORTING CONTEST

The sporting element of the rally gets underway bright and early Saturday morning with the first of three runs over the iconic Moll’s Gap stage, which is set to get underway at just after 9am. Leading the field is the Waterford/Kerry pairing of Craig Breen and Paul Nagle in their Ford Fiesta R5. They arrive in Killarney as leaders of the Irish Tarmac Rally Championship following victories on the Galway, West Cork and Easter International rallies. Aghadoe man Nagle, the winner of five rounds of the World Rally Championship and almost every major rally in Ireland, has never won his home event. “This is the one to win,” he said. “It was nice to get my hands on the famous Circuit of Ireland trophy [for winning the Easter Stages] but this is the big one.”

Last year’s champion Manus Kelly with Rory Kennedy on the notes starts at number two in his new for 2019 Hyundai Accent R5. Letterkenny man Kelly has won his home rally, the Donegal International, on three occasions but his secret weapon this weekend could be Kennedy who has won the Rally of the Lakes on seven different occasions (six with the late Bertie Fisher and once alongside Stephen Finlay), a record that is unlikely to be surpassed. Alistair Fisher and Gordon Noble are next up in another Fiesta, followed by Josh Moffett and Keith Moriarty in a similar car. Last year’s second placed crew, Robert Barrable and Damian Connolly, field a Skoda Fabia R5 ahead of the second of the Moffett brothers, Sam, and co-driver James Fulton in another Fiesta. One of the dark horses for a surprise result is Desi Henry alongside Liam Moynihan in their Skoda. They were third here last year and finished a strong second on the Easter Stages two weeks ago. Daniel Cronin and JJ Cremin will be hoping for a reversal of their recent misfortune; they retired their Ford Fiesta on Cod’s Head last year with an electrical problem and an engine failure on the St Patrick’s weekend West Cork Rally also forced early retirement. Lack of seat time since Cork - aspirations to contest both the Circuit of Kerry and the Easter Stages failed to materialise as they waited for their engine to be rebuilt - will go against them in the early stages.

Callum Devine and Brain Hoy are newcomers to the top ten in Killarney, but they finished sixth in West Cork and fourth on the Easter Stages already this year. On his last visit to County Kerry in 2016 he put his small Opel Adam into tenth place. Now armed with an R5 Fiesta like most of his rivals, he is another man capable of springing a surprise. The top ten is rounded off by Johnny Greer and Kristy Riddick who were fifth last year in their Fiesta and by Welsh crew Merion Evans and Jonathon Jackson who are on their first visit to the Rally of the Lakes aboard a Hyundai Accent R5.

ROUTE

Killarney and District Motor Club have laid on one of the most difficult routes in the rally’s 40-year history. Clerk of the Course Dermot Healy really wanted to do something very different to mark the special occasion. Reversing old favourites like Cod’s Head and Ardgroom, something that has not been done in over 30 years, was only the start of it. The Healy Pass has been run from the Cork side in the past but running the stage finish past the doorstep of the Sibin pub in Lauragh is a new departure. Sunday will feature two runs over Moll’s Gap, the return of the Sheen River Stage (not used in the Rally of the Lakes for a long time), a new stage near Rathmore and the full- length Gortnagane stage from Ballydaly to Headford to give a total of 230kms of competitive action, making it one of the longest rallies in recent years.

The first car leaves Parc Ferme on the Lewis Road at 8.30am on Saturday morning and at 7.20am on Sunday. The first car is due back on the finish ramp at the Gleneagle Hotel just after 5pm on Sunday evening.

LOCALS

The top local seed is defending national rally champion, Rob Duggan. Reunited with former co-driver Mikie Galvin, it is their first time working together in six years but a defence of last year’s national title is the only target in their hired Ford Escort Mk2. Kevin O’Donoghue and Timmy Kelly are next up in their gloriously sounding BMW M3 E30 and are the current leaders of the two-wheel-drive class in the Southern 4 Rally Championship. Dave Slattery and Ger Somers will share a rally car for the first time in years. Strong contenders for the Kingdom of Kerry title, they won’t have an easy time with local father and son team Charlie and Johnny Hickey right behind. Adding to the local battle, Tadgh O’Sullivan and John McCarthy start one place behind the Hickeys, all three crews in nearly identical Ford Escorts. “It is going to be some craic,” said middle man Charlie Hickey. Defending junior champion Colin O’Donoghue steps up to the full twoday rally for the first in a newly built Ford Escort. “This is a big step,” he said, ”This is my first two-day rally and there is a lot more preparation needed.” Shane McCarthy from Kenmare will Rob Duggan will defend his National Rally title with Mikie Galvin on the notes. be one of the contenders for class 11F honours in his Honda Civic and will face the similar car of Steven O’Connor and Christy Nagle. Kevin O’Sullivan and Seán Nolan are contenders for class 12 in their Escort. Local co-driver Denis Coffey will navigate for Raymond Spence from County Down in their Escort. Tommy Moynihan is another local co-driver, alongside Laois’s Patrick O’Connor in a Mitsubishi Lancer. Class 9 is nearly an all Kerry affair. Limerick’s Roland Doherty is the top seed in his Vauxhall Nova, but he will face locals like Denis Nagle/John Falvey (Nissan Micra), Noel O’Sullivan/Nicky Burke (Ford Escort) and Charles O’Neil/Tony McCarthy (Honda Civic). It is a huge occasion for O’Sullivan and Burke. As the rally celebrates its 40th anniversary, Noel lines up for his 37th attempt and Nicky will partner him for the 23rd time. Killarney’s Con Lucey has entered in another Ford Escort and he will face class 11R competition from Donal Flynn and Niall Myers in their Toyota Corolla. Shane Doyle and William Kelleher will be looking forward to the latter half of Sunday in their BMW E30 as the stages pass close to their Barraduff base. Pat Sheahan and Denny O’Riordan will contest the rally in their unusual lefthand drive Renault Clio. Kerry Motor Club’s Mike Dowling will start his fourth rally in his Ford Escort Mk1 while Anthony Sheahan brings up the rear in his Honda Civic.

RALLY OF THE LAKES BRIEFS... KINGDOM OF KERRY

Defending Moriarty’s Kingdom of Kerry co-driving champion Damien Fleming returns alongside Monaghan-based Raymond Conlon in their Toyota Corolla. The pair are not enjoying the best of seasons so far and have retired from several recent rallies, including the Rose Hotel Circuit of Kerry where a faulty engine sensor put them out. Darren Young arrives in Killarney as the second placed driver in the Kingdom of Kerry Championship and will be hoping to add to his class win on the event last year. His navigator, Kenneth Quirke, has flown home from New York for the event. Seán Hickey and Noel Fleming were third in this championship last season and they currently occupy joint-third in the series, just two points off the leader Tom Relihan who won't start due business commitments.

HISTORIC LOCALS

Local driver Alan Ring has placed surprise entry in the Historic section of the Cartell. ie Rally of the Lakes. It will be his first appearance on his home rally since 2016 when he finished fifth overall in a Ford Fiesta R5 PJ O’Dowd and John Young from Tralee ran their new Talbot Sunbeam for the first time on the Circuit of Kerry and overcame brake issues to finish fourth on that event.

FAMILY AFFAIRS

Father and son team Charlie and Johnny Hickey will be joined on the rally by Char-

lie’s brother John and John’s daughter Michelle. It will be Michelle’s first rally. She celebrated her 16th birthday in early April and this is her present. Both John and Charlie have over 30 starts each on the rally. “There are not too many brothers who can say they have 70 starts on the one rally between them,” said John. Rob Duggan’s brother and sister, Andrew and Tara, are contesting the rally in a Ford Escort Mk2. Dave Slattery’s son Dean makes his rally debut in a Honda Civic.

JUNIOR

Peter Falvey, fresh from his junior rally win on the West Cork Rally, is the top seed in the junior section in his Toyota Starlet. Conor Murphy and Keith McCarthy are next up in a Honda Civic, but a continuous engine problem has prevented them from starting several recent rallies in their Honda Civic. Kieran Reen will be another local frontrunner in this class, as will Donagh Crowley who won the category on the recent Circuit of Kerry There are 24 juniors entered, with nine of them from Kerry.

OVERSEAS INTEREST

The rally lives up to its international status with visitors from England, Wales, Germany and the USA entered in the event. Herefordshire-based Phil Collins, who first came to Killarney in 1981, is a local favourite and will be a serious contender for national rally honours in his Ford

Escort. Welsh visitor Sacha Kakad is on his first visit to Killarney in his new for 2019 Ford Fiesta R5 while Duncan Williams from England is another regular in a historic-spec Ford Escort. Galway native Liam Egan is another regular and returns from his New York-base in a Ford Fiesta R5. Declan Jackson represents the Isle of Man in his historic Escort. Andy Davies is another Welsh driver on the entry list in his Subaru Impreza while Andrew Felgate from England is on his first visit to the Rally of the Lakes in a BMW M3. Seán Kenny makes the trip home from Germany in his Honda Civic. Scotland is also represented on the entry list as Jonny Greer’s co-driver Kirsty Riddick hails from the Haugh of Urr.

HOME FOR THE RALLY

Several Kerry competitors have returned home from their overseas bases especially to contest this year’s Cartell.ie Rally of the Lakes. Cousin’s Aidan and Shane Buckley from Listry are based in Bristol and London respectively and will compete in Aidan’s newly built Ford Escort. Ronald O’Riordan works for Liebherr Container Cranes in Fossa but is often sent on overseas assignments. He has just returned to Kerry after an extended period in Brazil where he was installing container cranes in an inland port on the banks of the River Amazon. London-based Ray Hilliard and his North Kerry co-driver Conor Walsh make their

World Rally Car debut in a Subaru Impreza WRC. Killarney native and London Irish Motor Club chairman Mick Smith has entered the Rally Fest section in his Chrysler Avenger.

RALLY FEST

New for 2019 is a special exhibition class that features cars from the pre-1990 era of rallying, often referred to as at glory days of the sport. There are some incredibly beautiful rally cars, many with an interesting history, contesting this section of the rally. Leading this field away is Denis Cronin and his Kilgarvan co-driver Helen O’Sullivan in their BMW M3 E30. This pair won the international rally in 2010 driving a Subaru Impreza. Conor Falvey and Fearghal Pattwell will drive an ex-works Porsche 911. This rally was won by Ger Buckley and Demi Fitzgerald in 1980 and 1981 respectively and the Vauxhall Chevette HSR they drove to their victories returns to Killarney in the hands of Mick Dunnion. Michael Buckley, who appeared on the entry list of the very first Rally of the Lakes as a co-driver, will debut his newly restored Audi quattro this weekend. Other cars of interest include an MG Metro 6R4 in the hands of Frank O’Mahony, a rear-wheel-drive Peugeot 205 driven by Brendan Brosnan, a Subaru Impreza 555 driven by Paul Ahern and an ex-works Chrysler Avenger driven by Killarney native and London Irish Motor Club chairman Mick Smith.

Paul’s girls win silverware in Duagh The St Paul’s U11 girls team travelled to Duagh recently to take part in the Easter National School tournament and they returned to Killarney with silverware as they emerged victorious in the Plate final.

Front: Rian Weldon (team manager), Muireann Healy, Liadh Ford, Kate Healy, Aideen Fleming, Laura Healy. Back: Pádraig Weldon (coach), Cliona Moynihan, Abbey Doherty, Clodagh Clancy, Beth Healy, Siofra Randles and Ava Weldon. (Absent from photo: Ciara O'Sullivan and Celica Lydon.)

Paul’s defeated a good Galway Titans side in the quarter-finals before losing to the Ballybunion Wildcats in a competitive semi-final. The girls then advanced to the Plate final where they took on Abbeydorney. Paul’s got off to a good start with some quick baskets and they managed to build on this lead in the remaining quarters to secure a memorable victory. Abbey Doherty was the star performer in the finale and she deservedly picked up the award for Most Valuable Player. This is a great achievement for this very young U11 side considering the fact that most of the teams in the tournament were U13 and U14.

The Cedar Galaxy team who secured promotion to the Premier A by defeating Killorglin.

Cedar to dine at Kerry soccer’s top table Cedar Galaxy were formed in 2011 by a bunch of friends in Killarney. Eight years and five promotions later, they have reached their ultimate goal. In the 2019/20 season, the nascent outfit will line out alongside the biggest clubs in Kerry soccer when they take their place in the county’s top division, the Premier A. | By Adam Moynihan It has been a remarkable rise to prominence for the Killarney team and one that current manager/former player Darragh O’Regan attributes to the manner in which he and his players go about

their business. “We do things the right way,” O’Regan said. “We have our group and we don’t really have anyone playing other sports, so we’re very lucky. When we have a game, the only time a fella can be missing is if

he’s away, or if he’s working. It’s never because he has a football match or football training. Everyone who’s involved wants to play.” Cedar, who now play their home games in Killorglin, secured their promotion on the back of an impressive record of 10 wins and just three defeats and O’Regan confessed that their performances this season exceeded expectations. “We got promoted last year and all we wanted to do was stay in the Premier B and get ourselves safe. We took it one game at a time at the start, and then we realised by around Christmas that we

were in with a shout. We kept plugging away and started picking off wins when teams started dropping points. “Saturday night was a big, big game for us (Cedar beat Killorglin 2-1). There was a little bit of nerves. It’s the first time we’ve actually been promoted via winning a game, so it was nice to get a Saturday night fixture, win it and have a chance to celebrate as a team then afterwards. It was very, very nice.” The Galaxy now have a league final to look forward to against either Classic FC (Tralee) or Killorglin and while their manager was slow to play down the Premier B decider (both teams will be promoted regardless of the result), he admitted that Cedar Galaxy already have Premier A football on their minds. “Absolutely. We’re really looking forward to testing ourselves. We don’t want to be cannon fodder for any teams next year; we just want to hold our own. “The way we play, we might handle it.”
