03.11.17 Eve Kelliher takes a look at the news that’s been getting Killarney and Kerry talking

Local politicians crossing the road at the busy Lewis Road junction on the Killarney By-Pass road earlier this year. Pics: Eamonn Keogh

Let’s Step Forward For Safety AS WE renew calls for safety at the junction regarded as one of the most dangerous in Ireland, hundreds have joined a petition calling for action. They have shown support via an online petition seeking safety at the at the Lewis Road/Killarney Bypass junction. The Mayor of Killarney Municipal District, Councillor Niall Kelleher, pictured right, established the petition which he will deliver to the Minister for Transport Shane Ross and Transport Infrastructure Ireland. Killarney Advertiser has been campaigning throughout this year for safety at the junction which has been the scene of several very serious accidents in recent years, a number of which have been fatal. On foot of this campaign, several calls have been made at national level for action. “Road users, including motorists, cyclists and pedestrians, are living in fear anytime they have to access the busy junction,” said Mayor Kelleher. There were two accidents last week in the space of just three days at the accident blackspot and Mayor Niall

Kelleher’s petition attracted over 100 signatures in two hours on Wednesday afternoon alone. “As Mayor of Killarney and on behalf of residents of and visitors to the town, I am calling on the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Shane Ross, TD, and officials of Transport Infrastructure Ireland to take immediate action to prevent future loss of life or serious injury at the traffic junction linking Lewis Road in Killarney with the Bypass Road,” said Cllr Kelleher. “Kerry County Council and, in particular, Killarney Municipal District Council, have made repeated representations to Ministers and TII officials on this matter and yet, nothing has been done to rectify the situation. Our calls appear to have fallen on deaf ears and we urge those responsible to do what they are being paid to do. “This situation is not tolerable and it cannot be allowed to continue.” You can sign the petition at https://www.change.org/p/minister-shaneross-td-upgrade-the-junction-at-lewis-rd-on-the-killarney-bypass

London Calling For Noreen

HER years of dedication to the Killarney-London Reunion are to be rewarded in fitting style on November 18 with the announcement that Noreen Looney will be presented with the Killarney-London Reunion Person of the Year award. Noreen will be presented with the award at a function in the Claddagh Ring venue in Hendon, London. Noreen has been involved in the Killarney-London Reunion for many years. “Noreen really deserves this honour for her wonderful commitment; she is a very caring person,” said Cllr Donal Grady, chairman of the Killarney-London Reunion committee. If you need further information on attending the event, contact Cllr Donal Grady on 0872596464.

Killarney Graveyard Gets Green Light KERRY COUNTY COUNCIL is to go ahead with a Compulsory Purchase Order for the development of a new public graveyard for Killarney. An Bord Pleanála ruled on Wednesday that the local authority has the right to go ahead and buy land at Knockeendubh. The controversial site was the subject of an oral hearing two months ago. Killarney has for many years now faced a crisis when it came to grave space, with dwindling spaces left at the existing graveyard in Aghadoe.

There remains a six-week period during which a judicial review of the process can be sought. Among those welcoming the move was Councillor Michael Gleeson who said: “There is great urgency for the development of a new graveyard in Killarney as all of the existing public spaces are full. “Any further undue delay will inevitably result in people being buried in graveyards some distance from the town and many relatives would find that situation unacceptable and upsetting.”

Town Talk Major Haul Of Illegal Fireworks In Killarney Words: Eve Kelliher KILLARNEY GARDAI have seized hundreds of euro worth of illegal fireworks following a targeted operation over Halloween. Fireworks with an estimated value of between €400 and €500 were recovered operation on Friday evening. Four search warrants were issued and four premises were searched with illegal fireworks recovered in three properties as a result. “A large quantity of fireworks were seized and a file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions,” Garda Michael Milner of Killarney Gardaí told Killarney Advertiser. The haul is the largest such sei-

zure in Killarney in a number of years and the detections were carried out under a nationwide Garda operation – Operation Tombola – which has been targeting the sale and supply of fireworks. “We were very happy that hopefully this seizure of fireworks will have prevented someone from being hurt,” added Garda Milner. Superintendent Flor Murphy of Killarney Gardaí added: “Not only is the sale of fireworks illegal but also the use of fireworks can be danger and unfortunately as this time of the year can contribute to a lot of Pictured with the display of fireworks are Garda Mike Milner, Garda Brendan McMahon and Sgt John antisocial behaviour.” O’Gorman. Rugby World Cup Judges Top Accolade For Yew Tree Restaurant Deem Killarney ‘Too Small’ Award Chef de partie James O’Sullivan, Jozsef Sipos, executive chef John O’Leary, hotel manager Daniel O’Connor, restaurant manager Zsolt Zidek and Paul Fulop.

Killarney Chamber president Paul O’Neill.

HOPES of a €50 million cash bonanza for the town were effectively shot down following judges’ recommendation on a venue to host the Rugby World Cup in 2023. A successful Irish bid to host the event would see thousands of international rugby fans converge on Killarney for up to four matches. But it was revealed judges placed Killarney in third place out of three in the bid evaluation report published on Tuesday which had South Africa as the lead venue. It’s still to play for as countries will cast their votes on November 15, but it remains to be seen whether this result will be different to the official judges’ report. Killarney Chamber President Paul O’Neill said he found judges’ criticism of Killarney

being “too small” and “lacking experience in hosting international events” to be ill-informed. “Killarney is like no other town of 14,000 and our experience, while maybe not comparable with Paris or Johannesburg, shows we undoubtedly have the skills and knowledge match the other Irish destinations,” he told Killarney Advertiser. “It seemed to me to be a lack of understanding on the part of the consultants as to the unique capacity and experience of Killarney.” The Killarney Chamber president added: “Obviously it is a disappointing outcome. There was a lot of optimism from the Irish camp but there is always the unknown factor of the competition. However, from the Killarney perspective we’ll keep bidding for events and move on to the next opportunity.”

THE Muckross Park Hotel & Spa’s Yew Tree Restaurant has been recognised for its culinary excellence with the awarding of a two AA Rosette awards. The AA Rosette is an award recognising exceptionally high standards in culinary excellence demonstrated by AA Accredited restaurants across Ireland and the UK. The aim of the Rosette system is to provide reliable information for all patrons about where to eat. To receive the award of two AA Rosettes demonstrates a great precision in cooking and attention to the selection of quality ingredients. Muckross Park Hotel & Spa manager Daniel O’Connor said: “We are delighted for the restaurant and kitchen teams who are committed to

enhancing the standard of service and quality of the dishes served each year. This accolade is a testament to their outstanding work.” Executive chef John O’Leary said: “We are very lucky here in Kerry with top quality produce available on our doorstep. We believe in cooking great ingredients in a simple and uncomplicated manner. I’m extremely proud of my team on winning this fantastic award.” Yew Tree Restaurant also won Kerry’s Best Hotel Restaurant at the Restaurant Association of Ireland awards this year. Muckross Park Hotel & Spa has also made it on to the McKenna Guide’s 100 Top places to stay in Ireland this year and has been listed in Georgina Campbell’s Ireland Guide 2017.

HSE To Bear Costs Of Radon Gas Remedial Works At Deer Lodge THE Health Service Executive will pay the costs for remedial works at a Killarney mental health unit after it was found to have radon levels greater than the amount recommended for residential facilities. Two points within the 40-bed Deer Lodge Mental Health Unit on St Margaret’s Road had radon levels, two-and-a-half time the recommended safety level. A radon barrier installed prior to the unit’s opening in July broke down.

This had been installed by a third party but the HSE says it will pay €11,000 for the remedial works. Cormac Williams of the Psychiatric Nurses’ Association says pregnant employees who request a transfer out of Deer Lodge due to concerns over radon gas should be accommodated. The HSE said it would be happy to accommodate staff with concerns but added it is confident that there is no danger to staff or residents. It says the levels, although raised, were not at dangerous levels.

In The Picture

A NEW book showcases Kerry’s beauty “through an outsider’s eye”. John Wesson, the author of Kerry: The Beautiful Kingdom, first visited the county on a motorcycle in the late 1970s. Now he offers readers a grand tour of Kerry, as he showcases its people, landscape and wildlife. “I find Kerry to be the perfect place for landscape and seascape photography,” he said. “With the continually

various schools in Killarney parish will make a bursary presentation of €1000 to Sr Orla at the ceremony in the Killarney Avenue at 8pm. Sr Orla will speak at the ceremony about the challenges faced on a daily basis to educate the young people of South Sudan as a means of achieving liberty and climbing out of poverty and oppression. The award ceremony is open to the public and all are welcome.

changing Atlantic light, you will never see the same scene twice. It is a joy to experience the extraordinary light first-hand.” In 1988 John and his wife bought a small ruined house on Valentia. “Working from a tiny caravan on site was not easy, as our two children were born during this period. Today it is a delight when a passing tourist stops to photograph it!” he said. Kerry: The Beautiful Kingdom is published by the O’Brien Press.

Interview

Sean Kelly On Quest To End Clock Change CLOCKS went back an hour last weekend but there’s a growing consensus across the European Union that the system should be changed. MEP Sean Kelly has mounted a campaign for the last three years, despite resistance on the proposals from the European Commission. Mr Kelly was in Killarney Advertiser this week to highlight the benefits of eternal summer time. “The more colleagues who come around to the idea of eternal summer time, the harder it’ll

be to ignore their wishes,” he said. The Killarney MEP added: “They want no change during the year, to have the same time right throughout the year. “We’re now looking at how we can put pressure on the Commission to come forward with a proposal that would be acceptable and applicable right across the European Union, so we wouldn’t have any clock change from one end of the year to the other.”

Drama

Actors Tread The Boards In Aid Of Hospice THE Dóchas Drama Group will tread the boards to bring you “Philip and Rowena” – a powerful play by Gillian Plowman which is a tribute to hospice care. Director Liz Ryan said: “None of us wants to think about dying but when faced with the reality, hospice care is now an option for all of us.” The group is presenting Philip and Rowena to promote hospice awareness, with proceeds going to Kerry Hospice Foundation. “Despite the theme, the play provides many humorous moments and we have no doubt that you will enjoy it!” said Liz. “Hospice care focuses on relief from pain and the physical and men-

tal stress associated with terminal illness. The goal is to concentrate on the quality of life (rather than length) for the patient and their families.” The play will be staged in the Killarney Avenue Hotel on November 8, 9, 10 and 11 at 8pm. Tickets, €10, are available at the door. Doors open at 7.15pm.

News Briefs ... Two Hospitalised After Crash

Yule Love Christmas In Killarney Line-Up Festival

TWO people were taken to hospital and part of the Ring of Kerry route was closed for a time on Sunday following a road accident. The two-car collision occurred in the Tullig area of the N70 main Ring of Kerry road, between Killorglin and Glenbeigh, shortly after 11.20am. Emergency services attended the scene and two people were taken to University Hospital Kerry as a precautionary measure. Diversions were put in place as the road was closed for a time as debris was cleared from the scene.

Thefts From Vehicles On The Rise FIGURES revealed at the recent Joint Policing Committee show a 3% increase in the number of thefts from vehicles, while there was a 5% increase year-on-year in cars being stolen. Up to August 31, Gardaí made 80 arrests relating to thefts from vehicles, up two from the same period in 2016.

WELL, we campaigned for it to continue and we are delighted to confirm that the Christmas in Killarney Festival is going ahead – despite fears in recent months that a €30,000 cash shortfall could lead to its cancellation. But it’s full steam ahead for the hugely popular festival, which is now in its 13th year. And the 2017 Christmas in Killarney line-up is set to be the most magical yet, according to organisers. On hand to launch the festival were the Killarney Gobnaits – familiar to many from their antics during the St Patrick’s Festival Killarney. The quartet even made a batch of Christmas puddings and mince pies especially for the occasion. Kick-starting the Christmas in Killarney celebrations will be highly anticipated Magic Parade, when Santa and his elves along with favourite Disney characters will travel through the streets of Killarney, on Saturday, November 25, commencing at 6pm, for the traditional turning on of the Christmas lights ceremony at the

Market Cross. There will be many opportunities for families to see Santa in the Magic Parade in the run-up to Christmas season, on Saturday, December 2, 9, 16 and 23, at 6pm. Santa and his elves will return for the grand finale of the parades on New Year’s Eve at 6pm for anyone who did not make it home to Killarney before Christmas. The dates for the very popular Dine Killarney are confirmed: Thursday, November 30, and Thursday, December 7, dining times from 6pm to 11.30pm. In keeping with tradition, The Gobnaits will be hosting a special Christmas in the 50s quiz, on Thursday, December 7, in The Laurels ‘Hall’, Market Cross at 8pm. Audience participation is compulsory with dress code 1950s. As part of the exciting festival, this year’s Christmas Craft and food Fair at the Killarney Outlet Centre takes place on November 26 between 12pm and 6pm. NEARLY 20,000 passengers are set to fly into Kerry on the new Ryanair service from Berlin Schönefeld after it was announced that the route will continue through the summer of 2018. Over 150 passengers made the inaugural flight to Kerry this week, while 189 passengers, maximum capacity, were booked on the first outward flight to Berlin.

The service, which will operate every Thursday and Sunday, was due to end in March but there has been a broad welcome from the tourism sector in Kerry to the news that the route will continue through next year’s summer season. The incoming flights will depart Berlin Schönefeld SXF at 3pm and land in Kerry at 4.35pm on Thursdays. On Sundays, the flights will depart

Germany at 7.45am and land in Kerry at 9.25am. The outbound flight from Kerry on Thursdays will depart at 5pm, arriving in Berlin at 8.35pm while the Sunday flights will leave Kerry at 9.45am and arrive in Berlin Schönefeld at 1.15pm. Berlin Schönefeld is only 22km from Berlin City Centre. Kerry Airport’s financial controller Basil Sheerin, said: “The decision

to extend the route through the summer of 2018 underlines the importance of Kerry as a destination and gateway for the German tourist market and will ensure increased visitor numbers to the region. Berlin is home to 3.5 million people and a number of high tech firms in the pharmaceutical, biomedical engineering, electronics and media corporations sectors.”

New York Attack Suspect ‘Should Get Death Penalty’, Says Trump FIVE Argentinians and one Belgian were among the eight victims killed in New York’s deadliest terror attack since 9/11. The suspect has been charged with federal terrorism offenses in Tuesday’s attack that left eight people dead, authorities said. Sayfullo Habibullaevic Saipov, a 29-year-old Uzbekistan native who was living in New Jersey, is charged with providing material support to ISIS, violence and destruction of motor vehicles, said Joon H. Kim, the acting US Attorney for the Southern District of New York. Saipov appeared in federal court in a wheelchair and didn’t enter a plea, a source at the US Attorney’s Office told CNN. President Donald Trump said he should be executed. “NYC terrorist was happy as he asked to hang ISIS flag in his hospital room. He killed 8

people, badly injured 12. SHOULD GET DEATH PENALTY!’ the President tweeted late Wednesday night. Saipov told investigators he was inspired by Is-

lamic State videos, in particular one showing ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, a federal criminal complaint states. The suspect decided to conduct a truck attack “to inflict maximum damage against civilians” and that he specifically chose to strike on Halloween “because he believed there would be more civilians on the street for the holiday,” the complaint says. He began planning an attack a year ago and decided two months ago to use a truck, officials said. One of Saipov’s cellphones reviewed by law enforcement contained approximately 90 videos, “many of which appear to be ... ISIS-related propaganda.” The phone also had almost 4,000 images, many of which were ISIS propaganda, the FBI said in the complaint.

Commuters’ Nightmare As Workers Down Tools COMMUTERS faced travel hell as Irish Rail carried out its first day of strikes on Wednesday. All Intercity, Dart and Commuter services were scrapped until Thursday morning as workers downed tools in a dispute over pay. Commuters should note that no alternative transport will be put in place and other operators will not accept rail tickets.

Refunds will automatically be issued to those who have bought tickets. Four more days of strike action is planned: Tuesday, November 7; Tuesday, November 14; Thursday; November 23; and Friday, December 8. A joint statement from the Trade Union’s reads: “The Trade Union Group representing

Trump Corner Hours After Trump Calls US Justice System ‘A Laughingstock,’ White House Denies He Ever Did THE White House on Wednesday flatly denied that President Donald Trump had ever called the American criminal justice system “a joke and a laughingstock.” The denial came just hours after Trump said precisely that during a televised Cabinet meeting. Reporters were stunned that the press secretary would deny the president’s own words so soon after the president said them. “We need quick justice and we need strong justice — much quicker and much stronger than we have right now — because what we have right now is a joke, and it’s

Never fails to entertain

a laughingstock,” Trump said at the meeting. The president’s remark followed a terror attack in New York City on Tuesday that killed eight people. The suspect, Sayfullo Saipov, was shot on the scene and quickly taken into custody. Authorities later found items that indicate the attack was inspired by ISIS. A few hours after Trump’s Cabinet meeting, CNN’s Jim Acosta asked White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, “Why did the president call the US justice system a joke and a laughingstock?” The White House press secretary replied: “That’s not what he said,” Sanders replied. “He said that process has people calling us a joke and a laughingstock.”

all workers at Irish Rail, in pursuance of a long overdue flat pay award, have decided to serve notice on the Company for a series of industrial actions. “The Trade Union Group will conduct reviews on an ongoing basis and may decide to escalate the action by way of increased frequency and duration.” A statement from Irish Rail said that management regrets the decision to schedule five 24hour strikes during November and December and remains committed to resolving the issue.

Spacey ‘Taking Time Necessary To Seek Treatment’ In Wake Of Harassment Allegations

KEVIN SPACEY is seeking “treatment” in the wake of an historical harassment allegation against him by actor Anthony Rapp. Star Trek: Discovery actor Rapp recently told online publication BuzzFeed that Spacey had placed him on a bed and climbed on top of him when Rapp was 14 and Spacey was 26. A representative for House Of Cards star and former Old Vic artistic director Spacey said: “Kevin Spacey is taking the time necessary to seek evaluation and treatment. “No other information is available at this time.” The statement comes as production was halted on the sixth season of hit drama House Of Cards. Online streaming service Netflix and show producers Media Rights Capital (MRC) said in a statement the suspension

would continue until “further notice”. “MRC and Netflix have decided to suspend production on House Of Cards season six, until further notice, to give us time to review the current situation and to address any concerns of our cast and crew,” they said. The decision to pause production came before a second actor made allegations against Spacey. Mexican actor Roberto Cavazos wrote on his Facebook page that he encountered Spacey at the bar of London’s Old Vic, where Spacey was at the helm from 2004 until 2015, and said he had encounters that had been on the “verge of being called harassment”. Spacey responded to Rapp’s allegation with a statement posted on Twitter on Monday where he said he was “beyond horrified” by the claim.

Four People Injured As Taxicab Mounts Pavement FOUR people have been injured after an incident involving a taxi and pedestrians in London. Scotland Yard said the incident on Southampton Street, Covent Garden, is not thought to be terrorist related.

Officers were called at just after 5pm to reports of a taxi in collision with pedestrians. Three people were taken to hospital and a fourth was treated at the scene, paramedics said. Witnesses have reported that the car ‘ploughed into people’ in the city’s popular Covent Garden.

THE Great British Bake Off finale was seen by a live audience of 7.3 million, viewing figures show. That rose to 7.7 million when including those watching on Channel 4 +1. The viewing figures come in spite of Prue Leith accidentally tweeting the name of the winner 10 hours early. It’s Channel 4’s highest overnight ratings since the Paralympics Opening Ceremony in 2012. That saw an average 7.7 million tune in to see the events from the London Games. But the Bake Off ratings are lower than the 14 million who tuned in to BBC One in 2016 to see Candice Brown crowned champion.

That figure rose to 15.9 million when those watching on catch up services were included. The final saw former army officer Sophie Faldo crowned the winner and handed that all-important glass cakestand. She beat Kate Lyon and Steven Carter-Bailey to the title, with her multilayered honey-bee cake showstopper proving too sweet for the judges to resist. This was the first series of Bake Off on Channel 4, after it moved there from BBC One. The viewing figures rise to about 8.9 million when counting everyone who saw an episode of Bake Off over a seven-day period. Applications for the next series of Bake Off are already open.

Do You Know Someone ‘Storm Responders Should Not Extraordinary? Letters Take Tax Hit For Overtime’ Letters

Fossa after storm Ophelia. Pic: Marek Hajdasz (MH Photography)

IN ORDER to acknowledge the hard work and immense effort of emergency service workers before, during and after Storm Ophelia, the Minister for Finance should ensure that they only pay the lower rate of tax on their overtime payments. I made the request in a parliamentary question to the Minister for Finance, Paschal Donohoe. At present, all income over €33,800 per year, or €650 per week, is taxed at the higher rate of 41% plus PRSI and USC. As a result of the significant amount of overtime worked, many workers will see their weekly pay packets take a major hit from tax. I think that right across the country, and especially here in Kerry, the local communities are incredibly grateful to everyone who worked so hard, in extremely difficult services, to ensure

the safety of everyone. These workers, in the county council, the fire service, the ESB, the ambulance service, and the coast guard worked incredibly long hours, often by putting themselves in danger. I think the least we can do is ensure that whatever overtime they receive for this work should be taxed at the lower rate. To my mind, it would be unconscionable for these workers to lose over 50% of it in taxes, USC and PRSI. I am calling on Minister Donohoe to do the right thing by these people, and acknowledge, in a very small way, their hard work, commitment and effort during Storm Ophelia. John Brassil, Kerry Fianna Fáil TD, Leinster House, Dublin 2

Orthodontic Waiting List ‘Appalling’

I HAVE called on the Minister for Health, Simon Harris, to immediately address the huge waiting list for orthodontic treatment in Kerry and throughout the country. I raised this matter at a recent meeting of the South and West Kerry Municipal District. According to the HSE’s own figures there are now over 17,000 patients waiting for orthodontic treatment for up to four years or longer and that there are up to 12,000

patients waiting up to two years. This is an appalling indictment of our health service and the Minister and the Government need to take immediate action. I would also like to highlight the excessive charges for treatment and braces. This is putting massive financial hardship on already hard-pressed families. Michael Cahill (Councillor), Fianna Fail, Rossbeigh, Glenbeigh

RIGHTS OF WAY A Right of Way is a right for one land-owner to gain access to his or her land or passing over property owned by a third party. This is very common in rural Ireland where very often pockets of land are intertwined amongst a number of land-owners. It is therefore a common feature of agricultural lands but also dwellings that have been built abutting the roadways that have not been taken in charge by the local authority. A road or laneway is taken in charge by the local authority when it becomes formally responsible for its maintenance or upkeep and is formally adopted as a road in charge. A right of way can be established either by Long User or by way of agreement. Traditionally generations of landowners have gained access to their lands by passing and repassing over an access by way of continuous use without interruption. In addition to this a right of way can by agreement be granted by one land-owner to the other. Traditionally for conveyancing purposes if a right of way was not registered on a land-owners title a Declaration of Long User would be furnished to show that the land-owner gave access to his lands for a period of twenty years without interruption. The Land Law and Conveyance Act, 2009, has attempted to simplify the area of rights of way. Under the 2009 Act, a person can claim a right of way if they can prove continuous use for a period of twelve years. Initially the Land and Conveyancing Law Reform Act, 2009, set a deadline

of the 30th of November 2012 for rights of way to be registered. This has been amended and extended under the Civil Law (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 2011, which has extended the deadline for registration until the 30th of November 2021. The procedure at present has therefore been simplified in respect of the registration of rights of way. In the event that the parties agree to register a right of way an application form together with a marked Land Registry Compliant Map can be lodged to the Property Registration Authority together with payment of a fee and the Property Registration Authority will register the right of way. In the event that the land-owner claiming the right of way does not have the formal consent of the servient land-owner, an application by way of Affidavit can be filed with the Property Registration Authority together with Land Registry compliant map on a payment of a fee. The Property Registration Authority shall notify the servient owner and if no objection is received within a set period of time, the right of way will be registered. In the event that the right of way is contested, provision is made for a Court application to seek a Declaration confirming the existence of a right of way. The application to the Property Registration Authority is due to cease on the 30th of November 2021 and thereafter it appears that a Court application shall be necessary.

Organisation is Key TASKED with the prospect of organising a Christmas party? Enjoy every moment. Whether you have been tasked with co-ordinating your work do, or want to organise a get-together for friends or family, now is the ideal time to get out that pen and paper and start planning. Early birds will also avoid the disappointment of unavailable venues and the prospect of leading a less-thanmerry band of revellers around the streets in search of party central! Consult everyone involved as to which dates they are available and, if it is a work function, try to find out the opti-

mum day of the week for the event. For instance, Friday nights might work best because colleagues won’t have work the next day or alternatively this might be a no go as it eats into their weekend. Finalise a total budget for the event and confirm the number of guests – have in mind a minimum and maximum number of guests who will attend. The right venue is key – consider what type of venue most suits your team; a hotel, unique venue, marquee, bar or nightclub? Location is also crucial – would you like the venue walking distance from your office or are you willing to travel slight-

ly further? It is also important to consider where most people will be travelling back to at the end of the night to make sure the location is convenient and ensure maximum attendance. The party atmosphere is another key consideration – do you require a formal sit-down dinner followed by dancing or maybe more of a party atmosphere focusing on drinking and dancing? It is important to be realistic with your budget here, in particular think about what food and drink you would like included in your Christmas party package.

Brighten & Refresh A GLYCOLIC peel clears acne, brightens pigmentation and refreshes dull skin. This treatment exfoliates and decongests the skin with minimal irritation. It penetrates pores, dissolves oil and dead skin cells and accelerates the cell renewal process. The renewal process reduces the appearance of fine fines. This light chemical peel revitalizes sensitive skin and helps improve the appearance of acne-prone skin. The peel is appropriate for normal to oily complexions and acne prone skin. We recommend a series of 6 for optimal results.

Paul Galvin Designs New Kerry Jersey FOUR-TIME All-Ireland medal winner Paul Galvin has unveiled the new Kerry GAA jersey he designed along with O’Neills. The new jersey was jointly launched in the Kerry GAA Store on Friday by Paul along with Tim Murphy, chairman, Kerry County Board, and Frank Hayes, director of corporate affairs, Kerry Group. “We are, I believe, about to enter another very exciting era for Gaelic football in Kerry,” said Tim Murphy. “As part of our overall vision for the future we believe the Kerry jersey to be an integral part of our proud football history and tradition which inherently reflects who we are as a people and what we stand for. “On that

basis I invited one of our former greats, Paul Galvin, to work with O’Neills in designing an authentic jersey reflective of this tradition while also addressing the issue of number visibility.” Paul Galvin described the design and production process he undertook following Tim’s brief and working alongside O’Neill’s as “a great collaborative experience”. Inspired by the iconic 1985 Kerry jersey, the deep green and gold base with white trims “was essential to re-connecting with Kerry’s identity while also helping to implement part of the county board’s vision for the future in addressing the issue of number visibility for supporters”, said Paul.

Hamilton Secures Title Words: Cormac Casey MERCEDES’ Lewis Hamilton claimed his fourth F1 world driver’s title in last weekend’s Mexican Grand Prix. And that achievement means the Mercedes driver has gone level on F1 championships with Vettel and Alain Prost. Schumacher, with seven, and Juan Manuel Fangio, with five, are now the only men to have won more F1 titles than Hamilton. The Mexican Grand Prix presented some unexpected results. A first lap collision with Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel pushed both drivers down the race order giving hope to Vettel’s championship hopes. However, a win for Vettel and Hamilton finishing outside the top five was the result needed to keep Vettel’s championship dream alive. The Ferrari driver couldn’t return to the front to offer any chance of moving the championship fight to the next round in Brazil finishing 4th and Hamilton finishing 9th was enough to secure the championship. The sensation of the race was Red

Bull’s Max Verstappen winning by a convincing 19.678 second margin over Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas and Ferrari’s

Kimi Räikkönen a further 54.007 second back with only four cars on the lead lap.

Verstappen has thrown down the gauntlet to the championship establishment for next year’s driver’s title.

Killarney Historic Rally 2017 KILLARNEY AND DISTRICT MOTOR CLUB announced details of this year’s Killarney Historic Stages Rally. Ireland’s only event to cater solely for historic rally cars and night stage rallying is set to run on Saturday, December 2. The rally will count as the first round of the 2018 Irish Tarmac Historic Rally Championship and final 2017 rounds in the Southern Four Rally Championship and HRCR Stage Masters Challenge. Event clerk of the course Kevin Flannery and his Killarney and District Motor Club team have built this year’s rally around the competitor and in doing so have selected a route of the most classic famous stages Killarney has to offer. We recognize the competitors’ attraction to the event and the uniqueness that the Killarney Historic Rally holds worldwide, offering the competitor 110km of competitive stages, a centralised service area at Liebherr Container Cranes, Killarney, and the popular feature of the final stage to be run in the darkness. The event, which provides a welcome end of season boost to Ireland’s tourism capital and is worth millions to the local economy, will once again be hosted at the Gleneagle Hotel as Rally Headquarters. TV coverage of the event will be televised on RTÉ, TG4, Setanta Sports, Motors TV and SkySports throughout the Christmas period. The rally starts on Friday evening with a ceremonial start in main street Killarney at 7pm. The real action gets underway on Saturday morning with

the iconic “Molls Gap”, often rated by rally drivers as being the best and one of the most-challenging stages in the world. Followed by the mountainous Beallaghbeama Pass the crews head into service at Liebherr Container Cranes. This Loop of Molls Gap and Beallaghbeama is repeated with the addition of the fast flowing Caragh Lake stage. After a well-earned service break the crews tackle Caragh Lake for a second time and followed by a new version of the Rockfield stage. Crews return to service once again as they prepare for the night stage and the second run over Rockfield under the cover of darkness.

Airless Tyres TOYOTA has announced that it is developing airless tyres that will slash the weight of a typical tyre and alloy wheel by as much as 30%. The weight saved, around 5kg per wheel, will help offset the additional mass associated with pure-electric vehicles — chiefly heavy batteries — and could also fit in-hub electric motors. Toyota’s next-generation airless tyres made their global debut on the recent Fine-Comfort Ride concept that was unveiled at last week’s Tokyo motor show. The new technology works by wrapping a band of rubber around a plastic-aluminium hub. According to Toyota the airless tyres are already being tested on Japanese roads on ‘kei’ micro-cars and golf carts for an application on small pure-electric vehicles. Currently, Toyota hopes the technology will be commercially available as soon as 2020. Biggest challenge for engineers developing

airless tyres is the higher levels of rolling resistance compared to conventional tyres, with some recording 20% higher rolling resistance. What isn’t an issue is cost, in its early development the airless tyre is already comparable in price to traditional pneumatic tyres. This means that in the future, airless tyres could be cheaper than their heavier counterparts.

In loving memory of Hannah Mary Looney, Calfmount, Headford, Killarney who died on 7th November 2012. Don’t remember me with sadness Don’t remember me with tears Remember all the laughter We’ve had throughout the years Then when the summer sunshine Awakes the flowers in bloom I’ll walk that light from heaven Around the corner of the room Do the things we did before The same in every way Just whisper a little prayer to me At the dawn of every day

In loving memory of Timmy Crowley, Lisheen Gneeveguilla and Knockancore, Kilcummin who died on the 7th of November 2010.

Just think of me at present Don’t think of me as past For a mother’s love is a blessing In death it still will last

On a quiet morning, You heard the angels call, You took the hand of Jesus, And quietly left us all, In a world full of people, We sometimes feel alone, For part of us went with you, The day God called you home.

Forget your troubles and your worries They are mine forevermore I’ll watch and care and love you From heaven’s open door

NOVENA TO THE HOLY SPIRIT

PRAYER TO ST. JOSEPH

Would You Like To Include A Birthday Photo For Someone? Please Submit Your Photo By Wednesday At 5.30pm, €20 Per Photo

O St. Joseph, whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt before the throne of God, I place in you all my interest and desires. O St. Joseph, do assist me by your powerful intercession, and obtain for me from your divine Son all spiritual blessings, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. So that, having engaged here below your heavenly power, I may offer my thanksgiving and homage to the most loving of Fathers. O, St. Joseph, I never weary contemplating you, and Jesus asleep in our arms; I dare not approach while He reposes near your heart. Press Him in my name and kiss His fine head for me and ask Him to return the kiss when I draw my dying breath. St. Joseph, Patron of departing souls pray for me. This prayer was found in the fiftieth year of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. In 1505 it was sent from the Pope to Emperor Charles when he was going into battle. Who ever shall read this prayer or hear it or keep it about themselves, shall never die a sudden death, or be drowned, nor shall be burned in any fire or shall be overpowered in battle. Say for nine mornings for anything you desire. It has never been known to fail, so be sure you really want what you ask for. In thanks for request granted.

O Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal. You gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances of my life you are with me. I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things you have given me as you confirm once again that I never wanted to be separated from you in spite of all material illusions. I wish to be with you in Eternal Glory. Thank you for mercy towards me and mine. This prayer must be said for three days, after three days the favour will be granted. Boc

NOVENA TO ST. ANTHONY O Holy St. Anthony, gentlest of Saints, your love for God and charity for his creatures made you worthy when on earth to possess miraculous powers. Miracles awaited on your word which you were ever ready to speak for those in trouble or anxiety. Encouraged by this thought I implore you to obtain for me my request (request). The answer to my prayer may require a miracle, even though you are the Saint of Miracles, O gentle and loving St. Anthony whose heart was ever full of human sympathy. Whisper my petition into the ear of the sweet infant Jesus who loved to be held in your arms and the gratitude of my heart will ever be yours. Promise publication. Boc

NOVENA TO THE SACRED HEART Dear Heart of Jesus in the past I have asked for many favours. This time I ask you this special one, (mention favour). Take it dear heart of Jesus and place it within your heart where your Father sees it. Then in his merciful eyes it will become your favour not mine. Amen. Say this prayer three times for three days and your favour will be granted. Never known to fail. Must promise publication of prayer. R.F.

JESUS May your Sacred Heart Lord Jesus, be praised, glorified and honoured throughout the whole world now and forever. Repeat this 3 times. M.H.

PRAYER TO SAINT JUDE

MEMORARE TO ST. ANNE

May the Sacred Heart of Jesus be adored, glorified, loved and throughout the world now & forever. Sacred Heart of Jesus pray for us. St. Jude, Healer of the hopeless, pray for us. St. Jude, worker of miracles, pray for us. Amen. (Say this prayer 9 times a day for 9 days, by the 9th day prayer will be answered, it has never been known to fail - publication must be promised.) M.D.

Remember, Good Saint Anne whose name means grace and mercy, that never was it known that anyone who fled to your protection, implored your help or sought your intercession was left unaided. Inspired with this confidence I come before you, sinful and sorrowful, Holy Mother of the Immaculate Virgin Mary and loving grandmother of the Saviour do not reject my appeal but hear me and answer my prayer. Amen O.D.

Innisfallen Crozier Returns

Words: Debby Looney

Garden Magic

A Tour Of History

WHAT do eucalyptus, bottlebrush and leptospermums have in common? Yes, they all come from Australia, but that’s not it! Gardenia, jasmine or New Zealand flax? Pernettya, Podocarpus or pepper? All these and over 6000 other plants were introduced to our gardens by a gentleman named Sir Joseph Banks. Born in 1743 he was wealthy, well educated and adventurous. Rather than doing the socalled Grand Tour of Italy, visiting works by Renaissance artists, he declared that his grand tour would be a global one. At the age of 21 he secured a position as a naturalist on board a fisheries vessel bound for Newfoundland. He returned seven months later with a collection of 300 plant specimens never before seen in Britain. Two years later, his prediction of a Global Grand Tour came true, as he and nine of his men boarded Captain Cook’s HMS Endeavour. His money, influence and practical nature allowed him to indulge his thirst for knowledge, as well as his adventurous spirit. He became great friends with Captain Cook, despite their very different backgrounds, and gained respect from the crew – he was a hard worker, and never shirked responsibility. They landed at Madeira first, where he collected around 250 specimens – he was not best pleased. As a combination of bad weather and a chatty Governor hampered his foraging. Onwards then to Rio de Janeiro, where the Endeavour was met with a hostile Viceroy. They were allowed to restock, but not to set foot on land. However our intrepid hunter and his loyal men, crept out through the porthole, lowered themselves via a rope into a rowing boat and snuck into the forests under cover of darkness… In Tierra del Fuego they lost two of their party to hypothermia while out collecting plants, our beloved Pernettya being one of them. In Tahiti Gardenias and Jasmine were collected and Phormiums were collected in New Zealand. The next part of the mission was to find the fabled land of Terra Australis, which to the delight of the crew they did on April 17, 1770. There many of our favourites such as Callistemon, (bottlebrush) and eucalyptus were gathered. Eventually in July 1771 the party arrived home, Banks bearing more than 1200 plant and seed specimens. He was the first director of Kew Gardens and was the first of the great plant hunters.

A CAPACITY audience listened spellbound as the secrets of national treasure the Innisfallen Crozier were unveiled at Killarney House last Thursday. Part of the Autumn Talks series, the presentation was delivered by Dr Griffin Murray, of UCC, and was organised by Padruig O’Sullivan, of the National Parks and Wildlife Service. The Bishop of Kerry, Ray Browne, brought along a replica of the Innisfallen Crozier. The replica belongs

to the Diocese of Kerry. The original crozier consisted of a wooden staff covered with a silver and bronze casting, secured along its edge with an ornamental fillet of bronze. The head of St Brendan the Navigator is carved in front of the crozier. It was discovered in the River Laune by Denis O’Sullivan, an angler, who worked for Sir Morgan and Lady O’Connell, Lakeview House, Lough Lein, in 1867. It was acquired by Rev Dr Moriarty, Bishop of Kerry. Pic: Valerie O’Sullivan

Scotts Lakers V Titans: Five Things To Watch Out For

The Lakers host Galway side Titans on Saturday and there’s plenty at stake, writes Adam Moynihan

National League (Division 1)

Scotts Lakers v Titans Saturday, November 4, at 7.30pm Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre

1. Can the Lakers find a spark? After an electrifying start to the season, things have taken an unfortunate turn for Vojkan Bencic’s fledgling team. Hopes were high following two excellent wins in their opening two games but the Lakers have now lost four in a row and find themselves eighth in the fourteen-team league. Last weekend’s defeat away to Letterkenny IT was the latest in a string of disheartening results as the Killarney side again gave up a lead and ended up losing by a single point, 76-75. There’s still plenty of time to turn things around but Saturday’s clash with the Titans already has the feel of a season-defining game. A big performance and, of course, a victory would stop the rot and uplift both players and supporters no end. 2. Nothing godlike about the Titans so far Like the Lakers, the Titans are struggling for form and

go into Saturday night’s game with a record of one win and five losses. Only the Dublin Lions have fared worse so far this season (they’re currently winless and rooted to the bottom of the table). 31 points from New York native Keegan Ryan helped the Titans to victory over Sligo last Saturday but they were unable to carry that momentum into Sunday as they lost 6789 at home to Carlow. The Galway men might not be brimming with confidence at the moment but, given the Lakers’ current run of form, they’ll see this as a good opportunity to pick up some much-needed points. 3. Local lads hoping to make an impact Despite losing, imports Antuan Bootle and Mihail Kapitanov very much led the way last weekend with 23 and 20 points respectively. Bootle has been consistently impressive since making his debut and continues to be the focal point of the team, and Kapitanov really shone against LYIT as he hit four three-pointers in arguably his standout performance in St Paul’s colours. The Irish players were less influential last weekend – only Andrew Fitzgerald managed to break the ten-point barrier – so they’ll be hoping for better things this time out. There’s no shortage of local talent in the ranks, and there have been some fantastic individual displays already this season, the question is can the Lakers get multiple

players rolling for a full 40 minutes? Saturday’s game against the Titans is as good a time as any to make it happen. 4. The American conundrum Teams can only have one American on the floor at any one time so skilful guard Justin Tuason, who started the season superbly in Bootle’s absence, has had to make do with a place on the bench. Tuason is very talented and a potential match-winner on his day but Bootle’s size and engine make him pivotal to the Lakers at both ends of the court. There’s no questioning Bootle’s immense ability but, considering their current run of form, Coach Bencic may consider giving Tuason more than the ten minutes he has been averaging over the past few games. 5. Home crowd hungry for success Killarney got a taste of winning basketball on opening night but the defeats against Neptune and Killorglin left some supporters a little disappointed. It’s worth noting that those clubs are still undefeated this season with 13 wins between them so it’s probably not fair to judge this newly formed Lakers team against them. Having said that, the Lakers could quite easily have beaten them and a good showing and result on Saturday will go a long way towards getting their season back on track, while reigniting the home crowd in the process.

Home Game Preview SCOTTS LAKERS return to Killarney Sports Centre tomorrow, Saturday, November 4, and will play host to Galway Titans. The Killarney side will be anxious for a return to winning ways against a Galway side that have only enjoyed one win from six outings so far this season. A full-strength Lakers squad should be more than capable of securing a victory but a much improved team performance on recent outings will be required. Padraig Lucey’s return and the addition of Dan Griffin will be welcome under the boards alongside Antuan Bootle and Andrew Fitzgerald while Mihail Kapitanov, Mark Greene, Justin Tuason, Philip O’Connor and Shane Horgan are all capable of spearheading a strong challenge against the Galway side. Coached by Paul Langan, Titans are led by American Keegan Ryan, Hector Gonzalez, Toms Fabriciuss, Emmanuel Saah, Randal Kozlov and exciting teenage prospect Eoin Coughlan. The latter is a son of former Killarney supremo Joe Coughlan, head coach of the St Paul’s Superleague team in the mid-1990s. Tip-off in Killarney Sports Centre is at 7.30pm.

Lakers Pipped By A Point

IN A match that could have gone any way Scotts Lakers came very close to snatching victory after a long road trip but were pipped by a point by Letterkenny Institute of Technology (LYIT) in a very exciting clash at The Bishops Field Sports Centre Derry last Saturday, LYIT 76, Scotts Lakers 75. Scotts Lakers enjoyed a productive opening quarter and with Antuan Bootle making his presence felt, the Killarney side led 19-16 at the end of the first quarter. The Lakers introduced new signing Dan Griffin for this match and certainly will be a big addition to the squad as the season progresses. The Castleisland native was returning to the game after a recent injury and chipped in with an impressive eight points and eight rebounds despite playing only half the match. LYIT responded well with effective double team defence to restrict the threat of Antuan Bootle in the second quarter and the home side were 37-31 in front at half-time. Bootle hit 16 points in the first half but ran into foul trouble during the second half which restricted his time on court. Justin Tuason did well when introduced and along with good three-point shooting from Mihail Kapitanov, the Lakers did well to claw back a 16-point deficit and it was a tied ball game

Words: Eamonn Keogh at 55 points each entering the final quarter. Despite Bootle being on four fouls and staying on the bench for most of the final quarter, Lakers led 7064 with five minutes remaining. Andrew Fitzgerald, Shane Horgan and Mark Greene all featured prominently as the Killarney side maintained their advantage to lead 73-71 entering the final two minutes. However LYIT turned it around with an outrageous uncontested three-pointer from Paul McHugh and the home side led 74-73 with 1.10 remaining. Lakers restored their lead and were 75-74 in front with 30 seconds left. However Chaz Watler hit two free throws for the home side and LYIT led 76-75 with 22 seconds remaining. With Antuan Bootle back on the floor, Lakers still had an opportunity to secure a victory, but despite their best efforts that never materialised and the home side held on to win by one point. LYIT: Chaz Watler 23 Jon McGill 17 Jordan McClelland 11. Scotts Lakers St Paul’s: Antuan Bootle 23, Mihail Kapitanov 20, Andrew Fitzgerald 10, Mark Greene 9, Dan Griffin 8, Justin Tuason 5, Philip O’Connor, Shane Horgan, Billy Wiseman, Dylan O’Sullivan.

Opening A New Chapter Eamonn Fitzgerald reviews Colm Cooper’s autobiography THE downside of most sports biographies to date is that for the most part the books deal with all the games that were played and these go in to great detail about the minutiae of these games, leaving precious little opportunity for the reader to get inside the mind of the player. Gooch: The Autobiography does not fall in to this trap. Matches are presented, but more importantly ghost writer Vincent Hogan gets inside the mind of Colm Cooper. The public persona of Colm Cooper is there but also his private self, which is the real attraction of this publication. Gooch had a big decision to make, whether to retire from the intercounty scene or give it one more year. Eamonn Fitzmaurice welcomed the latter but he put no pressure on him to postpone his retirement. “I knew it was time. The decision had to be about what I knew I could do. Not what other people believed. I was yesterday’s man,” he said. “I was determined never to outstay my welcome as a Kerry footballer. I had no interest in being a bit player.” After that dreadful injury to his knee and to the cruciate at Portlaoise with Dr Crokes in the All Ireland club semi-final he never got back to the level of fitness that he needed for playing at the highest level. That and “the struggle to conceal so many years’ wear and tear”. He asked himself, “How would I replace the adrenalin? The buzz? The thrill of playing in front of 80,000 people? Truth is, I don’t suppose I ever will. All anyone can do now is get on with the rest of their life.” He had given his rehab his very best shot and he worked so hard with Ger Keane in particular through 2014 to get himself back to near full fitness for the rigours and intensity of inter-county football.

GLITTERING CAREER

He is very proud of the fact that he had 15 years’ inter-county experience with Kerry. He won five AllIrelands and eight All Stars in a glittering career. He weighed only 10 stone when he won his first AllIreland, but he was fully confident of his own skill. He perfected the skills of Gaelic football and this added to his bravery, determination and the ability to win his own ball marked him as a class apart. In our ‘On the Ball’ tribute to him when he announced his retirement from inter-county football, I termed him as “simply the best, better than all the rest”. He always delivered on the big stage and on the big day, despite what Joe Brolly said. He won a lot but there were other big games that Kerry let slip. He was a winner but the heartbreak of defeat on the big day hit him very hard. He scored many a goal for Kerry and, my favourite goal, the one that helped us beat Mayo in the 2004 All Ireland final. I love seeing a composed finish from a forward when the pressure is at its highest. He played under four managers and got on well with them all. Piseoga filled Paidi O Sé’s head and he was full of roguery. He relates the time Paidi took him to the Ryder Cup in a helicopter and the players were taken by surprise when Paidi compared the Kerry supporters to a certain species of animals. He also played under Jack O’Connor and Pat O’Shea. The latter was an absolutely brilliant manager, probably the most wound up of the four. Eamonn Fitzmaurice “holds his fire a lot. Keeps things short. Always logical. And calm”. He gives us an insight in to the Kerry dressing room on big match day. “None of the Kerry

managers I served under were into banging tables or kicking doors. They all knew the distinction between wisdom and noise. I was grateful for that.” Deaths of those close to him hit him hard. He deals with the death of his father, his mother and great friend, the youthful Kieran Cahillane. After his father’s death he “did what most Irish men do in these circumstances, stay buttoned up, and hurt, maybe resentful”. He “didn’t verbalise any of this because, as I said that’s just not what the Irish male does.” The death of his father made him grow up. During the summer of 2006 he felt he was living in a goldfish bowl. He wanted to be invisible. He realised he was public property and accepted that. He could never be rude to supporters. At one stage he went to the USA for three months to get away from it all.

PERFECT MOMENT

He devotes some pages to his involvement with his club, Dr Crokes. It is where he started and where he will finish, probably playing for the B or the C teams. When he won his most coveted medal, the All Ireland Club in 2017 he recalls the end, “Arms outstretched, running to embrace Pat O’Shea (the manager) arguably the most perfect moment of my entire football career. I’m crying. I can’t help it. With all the things I’d won with Kerry across the years I’d never let my guard down to this extent. Never.” He terms Pat O’Shea “the evangelist”. “Winning an AllIreland with Dr Crokes had been the last real box I had to tick.” There are great memories of playing so successfully for 15 years at the highest level. He claims that Dublin are not invincible. He recalls the battles with Tyrone and the fouling that went on. He was often horsed around but he answered all of that by kicking a score. Donaghy, Paul Galvin

and Darran O’Sullivan were the ones closest to him on the Kerry teams. He has an interesting take on the day Paul Galvin snapped the notebook from the referee’s hand in The Park, also how his marker Philly McMahon, kept him scoreless and then went down and scored a point for Dublin. He says that the one team you could never afford to lose to was Cork and the one team Kerry found it very hard to beat was Tyrone.

JOE BROLLY

He tells how he is going to deal with, “the likely on-screen relationship with Joe Brolly,” who labelled Gooch as a “choker”. Gooch played against the Aussies, once and once only.” Never again, such was their over physicality. He hopes to get his golf handicap down to single figures and play on with Dr Crokes at any level. “Pride certainly won’t be the reason for me stopping (retiring). My body will be. The appetite hasn’t gone. I suspect I’ll always want to play with Crokes, but the day will come – potentially soon – when I’m not just at the level to play senior and when the young lads like Tony Brosnan and Jordan Kiely merit selection in Crokes’ six best forwards ahead of me.”

PROUD OF ARDSHANVOOLEY

It is an excellent production, a must-read for anyone who wants to savour the public and private Gooch. The proud Ardshanvooley man never forgot where he came from or never got too big for his boots. Well done by Gooch and Hogan, The only downside is the unnecessary proliferation of expletives in an otherwise excellent text. Gooch: The Autobiography runs to 281 pages, ghosted by Vincent Hogan and published by Transworld Ireland. The hardback costs €22.99 and is on sale in the Eason Killarney on Main Street.

smalltalk 03.11.17

Scotts Lakers and Legion big man Pádraig Lucey talks to Adam Moynihan about his teammates, his time in the AFL and playing for Ireland Well Pádraig. Did you miss Killarney when you were away? Yeah I did miss Killarney. It’s home. I really enjoyed my time in Australia but definitely happy to be home to friends and family again. How would you sum up your time in Geelong? It was a great learning experience. I learned so much and I made friends for life. Was it always the plan to play basketball when you came home? To be honest, not really. I was going to settle back into life first before I got stuck back into sports. But I suppose when you get back and meet everyone again, and I went down to one training, and it kind of started from there. How was the season been going so far? I think it’s been going pretty well. Obviously the club has just formed a senior men’s team for the first time in a while so we’re not going to click straight away but we’ve got some impressive wins, especially against LIT away. A few questions about your teammates. Who would you least like to get stuck in a lift with? Con O’Mahony. It’s hard enough to deal with him on a regular basis but getting stuck in a lift, I couldn’t imagine that. Who’s the best at Tinder? Justin is self-proclaimed pretty good at Tinder but I’m not too sure. Who’s the biggest moaner? It’s pretty obvious it’s Philip O’Connor. Who’s the worst-dressed? Mihail. Some of the stuff he wears in training is pretty bad. What kind of stuff does he wear? There’s one set of leggings that are the colours of the rainbow. I can’t get over how he’s allowed to wear them to training. Who spends the most time in the gym? Con O’Mahony. He’s gone pretty big since I’ve seen him last. If you could bring back one ex-player to line out for the Lakers this

year, who would it be? Eoin Rice. Baller? Yeah great baller. He uses his speed very well. Who’s the best player you’ve ever played with? That’s a tough one. Are we talking just basketball? Any sport. I’ll say James O’Donoghue. Who’s the best athlete you’ve ever played with? Without doubt a guy named Mark Blicavs who I played over in Geelong with. He was a former steeplechaser. An absolute freak. Who was your toughest ever opponent? A guy by the name of Keelan Cairns. He plays up in Belfast at the moment. He was the same height as me but he got a late growth spurt and he’s about 6’10’’ and he can shoot pretty well. He was definitely a tough match-up. If you had to transfer to another local club, who would it be? St Mary’s Castleisland. I won an U-18 National Cup there and I’ve had some very good memories there, so I’d have to say them. And football? If you had to leave Legion? I don’t know… I’d get a transfer to London maybe. I don’t think I could play with any local teams really. Over to Beano and Twomey? Yeah Beano would be good craic! What’s your proudest sporting moment? I think it would have to be playing basketball for Ireland in the European Championships. It’s always a very proud moment when you get to play for your country. And the most embarrassing? Maybe air-balling a free throw. Has that happened? Oh many times! If you could go for a drink with any three sportspeople, living or dead, who would they be? Conor McGregor, Michael Jordan and there’s a guy by the name of Dane Swan who plays AFL. He’s a

bit of a loose unit so I reckon he’d be a bit of fun. Is there another sport you haven’t tried that you think you’d be good at? Yeah there’s a sport that I’ve started watching on Sky that’s blown my mind. It’s called Pro Kabaddi. It’s played down in India or somewhere. I reckon I’d be good at that. What’s the best sporting moment of all time? The first one that comes to mind is Liverpool winning the Champions League. Do you have any nicknames? I’ve had a few from different places but I suppose the main one that most people use is just ‘Plucey’. It’s pretty simple and self-explanatory! Do you have any superstitions? No, I don’t have any. Is there an app on your phone you couldn’t live without? Instagram. What’s your most-used emoji?

Pádraig Lucey

What’s the best show on TV? I don’t watch too much TV these days… I think every time I sit down to watch TV ‘Living with Lucey’ seems to be on so I’ll say that. What’s your favourite song? What Do You Mean by Justin Bieber. What would you sing at karaoke? Probably something from Oasis. Live Forever or Wonderwall. I know the words to them. Who’s the most famous person in your phone? Eoin Rice. Who would play you in a movie about your life? That’s a tough one. Maybe Brad Pitt or someone. He wouldn’t be tall enough! Last question: Can you tell me a joke? What did one ocean say to the other ocean? I don’t know. Nothing. He just waved. Good one! Thanks, Pádraig. No bother, Adam.

Crokes Power On To Munster Semi-Final Kerry GAA PRO John O’Leary gives a roundup of the Munster club football championship DR CROKES survived a stiff test from Clonmel Commercials in the first defence of their Munster and All Ireland Club titles in Clonmel on Sunday last. The home side had a two points halftime lead and despite being reduced to fourteen men early in the second half, the Killarney side drove on to record a 0-14 to 0-8 victory. They have home venue in the semi-final when they take on Clare champions Kilmurry-Ibrickane on the weekend of November 12. The winners will play Nemo Rangers or Adare on November 26. In the Intermediate Championship, An Ghaeltacht will play Cork Champions,

Mallow in Mallow on the weekend of November 12. The winners of that game will play Kiladangan (Tipperary), St Senans (Limerick) or Kilmihil (Clare) in the final on the weekend of November 26. In the Junior Championship, Dromid Pearses travel to the Loop Head peninsula to play Naomh Eoin of Clare in the quarterfinal on Sunday next. The winners of that game have home venue against Galtee Gaels or Croom of Limerick in the semi-final on the weekend of November 19. The final is fixed for December 3 in Mallow. The third GAA Club in the parish of Rathmore, Knocknagree are on the other side of the draw.

Rugby News ... Words: Liam Murphy ANOTHER Pro14 loss for Munster last weekend, albeit with a losing bonus point as the Red army travelled to Galway’s Showgrounds to take on Connacht. Hoping to push on from the home win against Racing 92 in the European Cup the previous weekend, preparations were somewhat dampened by the media circus surrounding Simon Zebo’s decision to leave the province at the end of the current season. Zebo has always intimated that he would like to play in France.

What we didn’t expect was this would happen so soon. Zebo has been linked to a few clubs in France and has explained that he has taken the decision with his family at the heart of the decision. One can hardly blame him and as his father is French and he is fluent in French. Ronan O’Gara dampened speculation that Zebo had signed for Racing so his final destination is still up in the air. It must be difficult to step away from his international career with Ireland and Joe Schmidt has already dropped him for the November internationals. Back to the Munster match, a disappointing result gives Rassie a lot to work on and next weekend the lads take on the Dragons in Cork at Independent park. Hopefully everyone can focus

Triumph For Killarney U16s Killarney 7

Killorglin 3

THIS fiercely contested U16 Munster Conference local derby played in Ballymallis on Saturday showcased the skills and strengths of both teams. After initial parity the game settled into a pattern of sustained Killarney attack and brave Killorglin defending and tackling. The decisive score came halfway through the second half when following a Gary Randles break Craig McKenzie Vass made further ground and from the base of the ruck Padraig Talbot saw a gap and crashed over. Donnchadh Grealy converted. Shortly after Killorglin closed the gap with a penalty kick. However, Killarney again regained ascendency and finished the game camped in the home teams 22 but Killorglin’s stout defence held out. The Killarney team on the day were courageous front row Adam Cronin, Matt McAuliffe and Denis Koyun.

Daithí Casey escapes Clonmel’s defence.

The second row were hard-tackling Sam Casey and Evan Mannix who dominated the lineout. The back row excelled with Padraig Talbot, Craig McKenzie Vass and John McCarthy covering every yard of the pitch. The halfbacks Peter Walsh and Dion O’Neill ensured forward momentum and hard running centres Mark Sheehan and Jose Ferrero impressed. Wingers Donnchadh Grealy and Thomas Clifford counter attacked and defended fiercely. Gary Randles strong running from full back was a feature of the game. Brendan O’Donoghue Adam McSweeney and Liam Walsh all contributed when introduced with Jack O’Connell, Josh Campbell and James Kennelly on stand-by.Killarney’s next game is a home game against Kanturk in Aghadoe tomorrow, Saturday morning, November 4 (time to be confirmed); support always welcome.

on the rugby and the improvements needed. The big talking point from last weekend’s loss was the red card for Andrew Conway. Nigel Owen’s had little choice but to issue the red as there was contact between the elbow and Jack Carthy’s head. It may have seemed harsh as there was little that Conway could have done, however the Red card was the correct decision and this was a turning point in the game. With losses to Connacht and Leinster already this season, one must wonder how the season will fare and whether we can really blame Zebo for moving on to pastures new. My worry would be for the likes of Conor Murray. It will be hard to keep him at Munster with the deep wallets in Europe.

History Makers

Killarney Rugby Club made history last Saturday by hosting its first-ever girls-only matches.

03.11.17 Fantasy Football

McVay Is Fantasy Champ For October FANTASY FOOTBALL aficionado Dale McVay has seen off stiff opposition to claim the Serie A-dvertiser Manager of the Month award for October. Dale got his tactics just right as he scored a whopping 78 points in Gameweek 10, significantly more than anyone else in contention for the monthly prize of a €50 voucher for Brian James. Just 15 points separated the top ten managers at the end of play so Dale’s decision to use his once-perseason ‘Bench Boost’ chip, which counts the points of your substitutes as well as your starters, certainly helped his cause. He also got clean sheets from United keeper David de Gea, Chelsea’s César Azpilicueta and Leicester’s Harry Maguire, while star turns from Leroy Sané (12), Aaron Ramsey (9) and Chicharito (9) propelled him to the top of the leaderboard. Thankfully for Dale, a distinctly average five-pointer from captain Romelu Lukuku mattered little in the end as he eventually saw off Jason O’Grady with seven points to spare. Jason was right in the mix until the very last fixture where he needed a big score from Burnley midfielder Robbie Brady, but unfortunately the Dubliner only managed to accumulate a modest three points. David McCarthy, who cleverly captained City star Sané, finished a point back in third. In the overall table, Darren O’Ma-

honey continues to lead the way with Patrick Collins, Mark O’Keeffe, our own Adam Moynihan and Brian O’Mahony completing the top five. Speaking during the week, Adam congratulated Dale on his award and said his victory goes to show how crucial the special chips can be. “Fair play to Dale,” he said. “Not only did he get his team selection right, his decision to use his ‘Bench Boost’ chip really paid off. In fact, those extra eight points were actually the difference between winning and losing.” Adam also feels the league is shaping up nicely and despite some strong frontrunners, it’s still all to play for. “Darren is out in front at the moment but we’re only a quarter of the way through the season,” he said. “There’s still only fifty points separating the top twenty and it gets even more bunched after that, so anything can happen.” And looking ahead to this weekend’s fixtures, Adam said there were some big decisions to be made. “Harry Kane is a doubt due to injury and Lukaku is playing poorly so it’s hard to know who to captain,” he said. “I suppose it’s difficult to look past City players at the moment but, having said that, Guardiola is capable of dropping any one of them.” “Spurs have the easiest fixture on paper so I might go with one of them.”

Dale got his tactics just right as he scored a whopping 78 points in Gameweek 10

M-Sport Ford WRC Clean Sweep M-SPORT wrapped up three FIA world titles as well as victory at last weekend’s Rally GB in Wales. A dream result for privateer squad M-Sport, which took on and beat three manufacturer teams to secure its first manufacturers’ title since 2007. Sixth place for Ott Tänak in an M-Sport Ford Fiesta was enough to seal the manufacturers’ crown, while third for Sébastien Ogier and Julien Ingrassia in the sister car guaranteed their fifth drivers’

and co-drivers’ titles and Elfyn Evans’ maiden victory on his and M-Sport’s home round gave extra reason to celebrate. Kris Meeke and Paul Nagle had a consistent weekend finishing seventh overall. However, the Citroen crew never challenged the leaders with Meeke citing the lack of pace from Citroen’s decision not to test in the Welsh forests, electing to preevent test in France with dryer conditions. A decision that robbed the team of a podium result.

Killarney Golf and Fishing Club, Men’s Club Club President Breda Duggan, Club Captain Derry McCarthy and Lady Captain Sheila Crowley formed the welcoming party to greet Paul McGinley as he arrived at the Clubhouse on Thursday evening last, to receive his “Honorary Life Membership” award, which he had accepted in January of 2015. Paul’s work schedule was so very busy that it has taken this long to arrange the presentation, and Paul, in his acceptance speech apologized sincerely for taking so long to become available to come to visit us, and accept this award. Paul was led up the stairs of the Clubhouse by Bagpiper Mike Milner, the stairs was flanked on both sides by some 50 former

Club Presidents and captains including the longest serving of those Captains, Lady Captain from 1962, Phyllis O’Sullivan. Derry McCarthy commenced proceedings and also acted as the MC for the evening, and he formally welcomed Paul to our Club. Derry was followed by Denis Cronin, Club President from 2015, who on behalf of the Club had bestowed the Honour on Paul. Denis outlined a witty resume of Paul’s career, to the assembled audience of some 200 Club Members, and Paul was then welcomed to the Podium after he had accepted his Club Blazer and a framed Citation, the symbols of his award. Paul followed with a 10-minute acceptance speech, in which he outlined his career, mixed in with words of encouragement to younger golfers who were also present. Paul was fulsome in his praise of the Club and he was most gracious in accepting the award which he said that he would cherish for his lifetime, and that he and his family fully intended to visit Killarney on many occasions to take full advantage of the benefits of his Honorary Life Membership of our Club. Paul after concluding his acceptance speech conducted a question and answer session, during which he comprehensively answered all of the questions asked of him, and he then proceeded to sign all of the autographs and pose for all of the photographs that he was requested to do. Club Captain Derry McCarthy brought the formal proceedings to an end, and a most enjoyable social evening was enjoyed afterwards by the Members and Guests. The competition scheduled for Sunday the 22nd October was cancelled due to the course being rendered unplayable by storm Brian, and it will now be rescheduled.

Well done to all involved, especially Liam Murphy, Denise Treacy and Ed Stack who have driven the girls section from day one and to the new coaches Fiona and Peter also. MEK United U14 Division 2 MEK Utd 2 v 1 Listowel Celtic B. We played at home at Fossa park last Saturday and conditions on the day may have been Dull and dreary but the football served up for the next 70 mins was quite the opposite. Listowel got their first opportunity on our goal from a poorly cleared corner kick. Players scrapping over a

loose ball in our box was eventually converted by Listowel to put them 1:0 up. Our lads went on the hunt for an equalizer immediately from the restart and that opportunity came from a cross from the corner flag across to rampaging Sam Griffin at the back post who met the ball with the sweetest of first touches to bury the ball low and hard in the back of the Listowel net. Up stepped Eddie and with a powerful arrow he beat the wall and found the top of the Listowel net with the score was now 2:1 to Mek united at halftime. Second half kicked off and turned out to be the finest display of controlled football that this MEK team has ever put together. There were so many outstanding performances all over the field today by Mek but every team needs a heartbeat and today that player was Leo. The link up play between defense and attack today was outstanding and saw us comfortably see out the game as 2:1 winners. A huge thanks to Listowel Celtic for such a sporting match giving the man in black, Willie Gorman an easy game to referee. A special mention must go to our coaches, Liam, Tomas and Ger Moroney for today’s performance. U12 Div. 2 Camp 1 - 3 MEK: goals from Cian Fleming, Aaron Dinham (Pen) and James Clifford with Sean O’Brien and Eoghan Bolger playing really well also.

Spa Muckross Community Games AGM: Our AGM was held Wednesday 25th Oct. In attendance were Jean Courtney and Bríd Stack who, along with Jean’s husband Frank, are stepping down after many years of service to Spa Muckross Community Games. They won’t be idle though, as they continue to serve the Killarney area in other voluntary organizations. A huge thanks to Jean, Frank and Bríd from all at Spa Muckross Community Games. All those who contributed in 2017 were acknowledged- Spa GAA Club and Lissivigeen NS facilitated us for training, competitions and meetings. The children would not have had the opportunity to participate only for the trainers who gave of their time so freely, and our Art/Handwriting judges were thanked also. We also want to highlight the role Killarney Advertiser plays in promoting voluntary groups like ours on a weekly basis. As has been said previously, Spa Muckross Community Games will not continue without parents being involved; with each passing year, existing committee members will retire once their own children reach 16. Unfortunately, we had no newcomers to our AGM. Spa Muckross Community Games will not survive if that continues, as is currently the case in a number of areas in Kerry.

Killarney Legion GAA UNDER 12 GIRLS: Having started their training last March the curtain came down on the girls season last weekend in Killorglin. And in the words of coach Selina Looney they saved their best till last. Speaking after their 5-7 to 2-2 East Kerry B Final win over Laune Rangers Selina added “The girls fought hard and never gave up. I told them win, lose or draw we are proud of them, they played the best game of football they ever have done and we couldn’t be happier. Some of these girls we have trained for two years and it is emotional coming to the end of the season, but I couldn’t think of a better way to end it. They came home with not one but two trophies this year. Well done to all the girls that

played today, I want to thank ye and yer parents so much for their support “. Munster Club Championship - Quarter Final: Dr Crokes 0-14 Clonmel Commercials 0-8. This was a game in which we played second fiddle to the Tipperary men in the first half. In this 30 minutes Clonmel were well organised in defence and we found it hard to penetrate this defensive set up. We only put five points on the scoreboard in the half hour and only one of our six attackers managed a point from play. We had the first two scores of the second half, two points to draw level by the 37th minute. We were now very much in the game but when we lost a man to a red card in the minute our chances looked slim to qualify for the next round. We however produced a twenty minute plus of outstanding football and never say die spirit. During this period, we outscored our opponents seven points to one for a six-point victory. This was as good as any display I have seen from this team. We have now reached the semifinal of the competition and I know our Management will want an even better display from them in the next round as they would not have been happy with our first half display. Clonmel Commercials were well on top in the first half and even though they didn’t fire in the second half I feel they will be hard to beat in future Munster Club Championships. A negative against us was that four of their men came up the field and scored in the first half. We will now be facing Kilmurray iBrickane in the Semi final which will be played in the Dr Crokes pitch on Sunday 12th of November. Congratulations: Congratulations to the Crokes B team and Management that beat Skellig Rangers 3-9 to 0-14 in Division 4 play off on Monday 30th of October. They will now play Division 3 Football next year.

MINOR FOOTBALL: Kilcummin 3-11 Spa 0-18. Our Minors captured the East Kerry C championship on Saturday last with a win over Spa in Spa. Two goals from Conor McCarthy helped us to a six points lead at half time before he retired injured before the break. We opened up an eightpoint lead after James Nagle scored our third halfway through the second half but then had to endure a tremendous fight back from Spa. Only for a resolute defence well marshalled by Sean O’Leary and a number of fine saves from Keith O’Leary we could have been overtaken. As it was Spa came to within one point of us in injury time but Paul O’Shea who was very influential scored a magnificent long range point to seal the victory. This was a great team effort from players and substitutes under the direction of Seanie, Alan and Mike and when Captain Sean O’Leary lifted the trophy it was a fitting reward for their efforts throughout the year. O’DONOGHUE CUP: Kilcummin play Dr Crokes in Lewis Rd on this Saturday at 1.30 in the quarter final of the Aquila Club sponsored O’Donoghue Cup
