Editor’s View Calls For Congestion Solutions
Eve Kelliher takes a look at the news that’s been getting Killarney and Kerry talking
LAST week Killarney Advertiser highlighted the parking and congestion crux in Killarney during the busy July/August period. We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again – this is a problem that has been ongoing for years. One solution suggested was a designated car park with a flat rate per day. In European cities such as Venice, there is a flat rate per day which most visitors are happy to pay knowing their car will be safe. It also takes the pressure off traffic flow. Car parks could be zoned with a premium and cheaper car parks clearly flagged in a transparent manner. Bottlenecks need to be quantified and tackled head on; do we know exactly how many car parking spaces could be needed? There does seem to be a chink of light at the end of the (traffic-jammed) tunnel with talks in place on a through road from the High Street junction to Dunnes Stores and also discussions ongoing in relation to a multi-storey car park and relief road changes.
High Street Junction & Monsignor O’Flaherty Road
REGULAR local users of the Monsignor O’Flaherty Road will be familiar with the number of tourists whose sat nav takes them down what is in effect a cul-de-sac at the moment. Mental gymnastics are sometimes required to propel the puzzled visitor to some far-flung part of town as
they face the struggle to do a U-turn from their deadend. But a through road could be on the horizon at last. Kerry County Council officials are discussing the proposed provision of a new route from the High Street junction to Dunnes Stores, New Street, via the Monsignor O’Flaherty Road. It is hoped such a road would also help alleviate the congestion along New Road, which is of particular concern during the school year. Responding to queries on the matter
from Cllr Donal Grady, Killarney Municipal District Engineer John Ahern, said talks on the required land acquisition are taking place with landowners. “It would mean you could go down to
Relief Road Updates OUR relief roads do not seem to be solving the traffic congestion in summer. One suggestion that has been raised recently was a call for a direct access point for jarveys into Killarney National Park. This would improve traffic flow and reduce congestion on Mission Road, according to Independent Councillor Maura Healy-Rae who raised the issue at the recent meeting of Killarney Municipal District. Cllr Healy-Rae said a location near the Plaza, across from the Ha Ha, would be ideal. Kerry County Council said it would contact the National Parks & Wildlife Service to discuss the matter. The necessity for an outer relief road from Lissivigeen to Castlelough was also highlighted at the meeting by Cllr Healy-Rae. There have been numerous representations
and deputations about this issue, she pointed out. “Previously, KCC said they were considering alternative routes which could provide relief in the meantime,” said Cllr Maura Healy-Rae. “I asked that the Woodlawn Road would not be specified as an alternative route in the interests of health and safety.” Kerry County Council said in order for Transport Infrastructure Ireland to consider the Killarney Outer Bypass, it must be included on the National Capital Investment Plan 2016-2021. In the meantime, Kerry County Council National Road Design Office is examining alternative routes which could alleviate congestion between the N22 and the N71. The routes are at pre-feasibility stage and will only be disclosed when sufficient appraisal has been carried out to deem them feasible.
New Street from the High Street junction in a matter of minutes, and it will also do a lot to take much traffic off the streets,” Cllr Grady told Killarney Advertiser.
Feasibility Of A Multi-Storey Car Park THE feasibility of a multi-storey car park in Killarney is also being examined. Several councillors, including Councillors Brendan Cronin and Mayor of Kerry John Sheahan and Mayor of Killarney Municipal District Cathaoirleach Niall Kelleher raised the issue of parking in Killarney at the recent monthly meeting of Killarney Municipal District. Cllr John Sheahan asked if a multi-storey car park was being considered for Killarney. Kerry County Council said it is actively examining the feasibility of a number of sites for car parking in the town, as well as ensuring existing locations are being uti-
lised efficiently. The council has set up a multi-disciplinary project team to examine the feasibility of such a car park. Cllr Brendan Cronin also questioned the council’s Roads Department on the provision of extra parking, while Cathaoirleach of Killarney Municipal District Niall Kelleher urged the council to provide further car parking space in the town in the near future. He acknowledged that with the current tourist season in full flow, any improvements should not take place in the coming months. However, he says the town of Killarney cannot be in the same position in a year’s time in relation to parking.

Killarney Teens Set Wheels In Motion In Skate Park Campaign
Cllr Donal Grady with Killarney skateboarders Tomas Connolly and Daire Carey.
AN ONLINE petition to open a skate park in Killarney has attracted over 900 signatures in only a month and teenagers throughout the town have backed the campaign. At present, youngsters skateboard at two main locations in Killarney – beside the courthouse and next to the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, New Road. But they find they are usually asked to move on. They are supported in their quest for a skate park by Councillor Donal Grady who has brought the matter to the attention of the local authority over the years. “We need to get a safe area to develop this. The motion was passed by the council and we want young people to have input in developing this facility,” Cllr Grady said. “First we have to find a suitable place.” A Kil-
larney family told Killarney Advertiser that their children are envious of their counterparts in other countries and counties who can access a skate park whenever they want. The nearest skate parks to Killarney are in Ballincollig and Limerick city centre. “It’s a shame that our sons have to travel outside the county to enjoy the sport they love,” the family stated. “Facilities are much better developed in continental Europe. Ever since the boys were small the skateboard and scooter have been the first thing into the suitcase for a trip abroad, and the itinerary usually includes visits to a skate park or two. “Driving through France and Spain it’s quite common to see villages with their own skate park, and in cities like Brussels and Barcelona the skaters are a tourist attraction in their own right.”
First Principal Appointed to Two Mile Community National School Education THE eagerly awaited appointment of the principal of Killarney’s new Community National School (CNS) has been confirmed by Kerry Education and Training Board (Kerry ETB). The ETB is delighted to announce that Catherine Barry has been appointed as the first principal of Two mile CNS as of August 1. The school is on schedule to open on August 30 as the first community national school in Kerry under the patronage of Kerry ETB. Director of Schools of Kerry ETB Ann O’Dwyer said: “We are absolutely delighted that Catherine is taking up this position. She has a huge amount of experience at senior management level in schools as deputy principal in her previous school. She also understands the
unique opportunities and challenges of setting up a new school as she has been involved in this process previously.” Catherine began her teaching career in Darndale in Dublin. She moved to Kerry in 1998 and taught in various schools in Tralee before being appointed to Tralee Educate Together NS in 2002. She was involved in the setting up of that school and was appointed deputy principal shortly after. She has a commitment to multidenominational education and to high quality teaching and learning. Catherine Barry said “I am delighted to take up this very important position of setting up Two Mile Community National School. I am looking forward to working closely with Kerry ETB and the school community to building an
inclusive school with a reputation for its excellence in teaching and learning. As it will start off quite small, it is an incredible opportunity for any parents who want their child educated in small classes where their children will benefit from working closely with the class teacher.” Two Mile CNS is currently enrolling children from junior infants to sixth class. There will be an opportunity to meet the new principal and tour the school on Tuesday, August 15, at 7pm. The principal can be contacted directly on by telephoning 086-4183558 or emailing cns@kerryetb.ie. Application forms can be obtained by emailing cns@kerryetb.ie or visiting Kerry ETB’s website www.kerryetb.ie

Credit Union Help Families Manage The Costs Of Education WITH the Leaving Cert results and CAO offers coming out this month, many families will see their child or children off to college for the first time. For these families, this can be an extremely stressful time, as the cost of third-level education continues to spiral, having a huge impact on family budgets and household spending. Killarney Credit Union would like to remind their members that the credit union is here to help and
have this week launched their education loan which can help families in the South Kerry area cover these costs. This week Killarney Credit Union also announced the opening of its 2017 Bursary Award which will give a €4,000 bursary to four third level students to attend college this academic year. The bursary is open to all members of Killarney Credit Union who are attending college for the first time and is also open
to students studying aboard and mature students. Joy Clifford-Vaughan, Youth Officer with Killarney Credit Union, said: “Last year we had 58 applicants for the awards and the lucky winners were Claire Cronin, Brendan Wall, Irene Horan and Shane Howe who each received an award for €1,000.00 each. With the increased costs of attending third level, this bursary is a welcome financial aid for meeting those costs.” Application forms are avail-
able in all branches and on the website www.killarneycu.ie. The closing date is Friday, September 22, at 5pm. Proof of acceptance on course must be provided in advance of payment of bursary. For a €5,000 education loan with a variable rate of 6% and APR of 6.2%, 24 monthly repayments of €221.65, the total repayment will be €5310.40. Lending terms and conditions apply. Loans are subject to approval.

Barry Keoghan and Shona Guerin at the New York premiere of Dunkirk.
KILLARNEY lady Shona Guerin found herself in the limelight at the premieres of Dunkirk. The 21-yearold cut a dazzling dash as she accompanied her boyfriend, actor Barry Keoghan. Shona, a makeup artist at Sean Taaffe Hair & Beauty, Killarney, turned heads and hit the headlines after attending the London, New York and Dublin premieres of the hit movie with Barry, who is well known to Irish viewers for starring in RTÉ drama Love/Hate.
Her star quality shone on the red carpet, with the Killarney lady attracting the attention of a number of big brands keen to have her promote their looks. Shona and Barry met on a night out in Killarney and the pair has been dating for the past few months. Of her stint accompanying the 24-year-old actor on Dunkirk’s international promotional tour, Shona told Killarney Advertiser: “It was a great experience all right – it will be a while before I top it!”
STANDING ovations greeted Clonkeen Youth Choir as they launched their CD “Celebrate” last Friday. Following the launch, in The Kerry Way, the choir sang at 9.30am Mass in Clonkeen on Sunday. Proceeds from the CD will go to the Cork/Kerry Health Link Bus Service. Members of the choir have been inspired over the past year by the courage of one of their members Leah Lynch. “Leah has battled with a very rare form of cancer with calm fortitude, and resilience, and is now recovering from major surgery,” said a spokeswoman for the choir. Leah and her family have been making huge efforts to raise money for the Cork Kerry Health

Killarney Welcomes Young Inventor Ploughs Ahead To Launch Big Show Rotary Ireland Leaders
At the launch of the South Kerry Ploughing Championships & Harvest Show were Jim Foley, Irish Pilgrimage Trust, Jay Galvin, Kerry/Cork Health Link Bus, Connie Brosnan, IKA Kerry branch, and Niamh Cronin, Down Syndrome Kerry; back, Eilís Cronin (KVC&V). Mayor of Killarney Municipal District Niall Kelleher, Mayor of Kerry John Sheahan and Jack Nagle.
A TEENAGE entrepreneur, Jack Nagle, joined forces with Kerry County Council chief executive Moira Murrell to launch this year’s South Kerry Ploughing Championships and Harvest Show. The hugely popular charity event, which turns back the clock and looks to the future on the same day, will take place on Sunday, September 3. Organised by Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage and now in its fourth year, the daylong event will take place on Fleming’s Farm at Grenagh, Fossa, Killarney. Jack Nagle was a prizewinner at the Young Scientists exhibition thanks to his invention of a safety lock for tractors that engages the handbrake automatically. Also in attendance at the launch, at the Innisfallen Hotel, Fossa, were Mayor of Kerry Cllr John Sheahan and Mayor of Killarney Cllr Niall Kelleher. Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Chairman Tom Leslie said since it was started in 2014, the event has generated tens of thousands of euro for local charities and, at this stage, the club has contributed close on €100,000 to worthy causes. This year’s beneficiaries will be the Kerry branch of the Irish Kidney
Association, Down Syndrome Kerry, the Irish Pilgrimage Trust and the Kerry-Cork Health Link Bus. “A massive attraction this year is that the event will incorporate the National Rally of the Irish Vintage Society, showcasing Ireland’s great heritage, and this year’s show will also feature a round of the Irish Tractor Pulling Championships which is always a great spectacle,” Tom said. The latter involves heavily modified tractors pulling massive weights along a pre-determined track and it is billed as the most powerful motor sport in the world. The big day will feature numerous trade stands, traditional and modern method ploughing demonstrations, sheep shearing competitions, harvesting demos, machinery showcases and traditional farm practice exhibitions. A major trade stand marquee will be located on the grounds with competitively priced exhibition space available to local businesses, community groups and clubs. For information on exhibition space availability contact event secretary Ann Marie O’Sullivan on 0879726200 or email southkerryploughing@gmail.com.
Marvellous Mairead On A Par With The Best MAIREAD MARTIN continued her on her rich vein of form by claiming the Leinster Ladies Championship at Donabate on Sunday. Plus 2 handicapper Martin who is a member of Killarney, Ballybunion and Kanturk Golf Clubs, representing the latter, won her second national event in less than a fortnight following on from her Irish Girls Championship victory at Mallow GC. After starting 2017 outside the top 800 this win takes Mairead to just outside the top 300 in the women’s world amateur rankings where she is the seventh ranked Irish female
player behind world number one Leona Maguire (Cavan). When not competing Martin works on her game at Swing Studio Killarney with her coach Mark Heinemann who is the ILGU regional coach for the southwest and ILGU High Performance squad support coach. She now faces a very busy August with the ladies home internationals up next from August 9-11 at Little Aston GC. This is followed up by the British Girls Championship from August 15 to 19 at Enville GC and then it’s on to Royal Curragh for the Irish senior cup representing Killarney.
THE importance of increasing Rotary membership was highlighted by Rotary Ireland leaders at a keynote gathering in Killarney on Wednesday afternoon. Killarney Rotary Club hosted Rotary Ireland District Governor Garth Arnold and Assistant Governor Conny Ovesen at a special lunch in Gaby’s Restaurant, High Street. In his address, Mr Arnold spoke of satellite clubs, the first of which was established in Ireland in July and which is sponsored by Dublin North Rotary Club, and noted how such clubs can also boost membership among young people. Killarney Rotary President Eduard Schmidt-Zorner highlighted the work done by Killarney Rotary Club. “We have supported over 30 charities and projects over the last few years and we also do huge work locally,” Mr Schmidt-Zorner told the gathering.
Killarney Rotary Club has a strong youth involvement in the form of the its Youth Leadership Competition and the Killarney Rotary Young Musician of the Year (whose Kerry finalists proceed to represent Killarney Rotary club in the UK). The club also organises mock interviews for secondary school students and hosts a number of exciting social and charity events throughout the year. “One of our main events is the Evening of Wine & Art in November, which is supported by a large number of people in our community,” added the Killarney Rotary Club president. “We have an afternoon tea with a fashion show in October which attracts more and more visitors every year and we will have a haibun competition next year which will involve the students of the schools in Killarney, Milltown and Killorglin.”

No Language Barrier In Kerry
ANYONE walking along the stretch of the Kerry Way between Lord Brandon’s Cottage and the Bride Valley on Saturday last could be forgiven for wondering which country exactly they were in given the multi-lingual tones that were to be heard along the route. This was all to do with a walk organised by the Kerry Folklore Group (Béaloideas Chiarraí) aimed at promoting the multi-lingual Kerry Way Folklore & Heritage App but also coincided with a major announcement in relation to the next phase of this project. The app, which currently covers the stretch of the Kerry Way between Lord Brandon’s Cottage and Glencar, provides users with the opportunity to learn about the heritage and important archaeological sites along the route. People also get to hear what life was like down through the years in the region through hearing recordings of local people. Once downloaded, the different elements are triggered by GPS as one walks along the route. Amongst those on the walk to experience the app was German Ambassador Herr Matthias Hopfner and his wife Tina, Kerry’s newest Minister Brendan Griffin, football legend Micky Ned O’Sullivan, MEP Seán Kelly and representatives of tourism businesses and organisations from around the region. Welcoming everyone to the event, chair of Kerry Folklore Johnny O’Connor thanked all of the organisations who supported the development of the App and said that it was the hope of committee that it would encourage many more people to enjoy the Kerry Way walk while helping to preserve the heritage of the region. Before the walkers set off on the route, SKDP CEO Noel Spillane broke the excellent news that the Kerry Folklore project application for circa €20,000 in funding under the 2014-2020 Rural Development (LEADER) Programme to enable the app cover the remaining sections of the Kerry Way had been successful. Kerry Group’s Frank Hayes then announced that Kerry Group would be delighted to provide the match funding to enable the completion of the project. This news added a spring to the step of all the walkers in attendance. Visit www.kerrywayfolkloreandheritage.com to download.

Killarney Retailers In Ireland’s Top 100 Stores THREE Killarney retailers are among seven in Kerry to be named among the top 100 stores in Ireland by Retail Excellence Ireland, the largest retail industry representative organisation in Ireland. Mods & Minis, Vodafone and Corcoran’s Furniture & Carpets are all on the hotlist. Other Kerry businesses on the prestiious list are Ahern’s Pharmacy, Farranfore, Ballyseedy Home and Garden, Garvey’s Supervalu, Tralee, Horan’s Health Store, Tralee. The Top100 stores are part of the Retail Excellence (RE) Awards, which were established in 1997 to promote best practice and encourage high standards in the Irish retail industry and are now the largest and most prestigious of its kind in Ireland. The awards, will take place on Saturday, November 11, in The Malton Hotel in Killarney. Deirdre and Thomas McCloskey
of Mods & Minis, Killarney, stated: “There were almost 700 entries nationwide and it is an honour to be included.” As part of the Top100 selection process, all store entrants were visited by a mystery shopper, with those exceeding service and standards criteria making it to the Top100 stores. The Top100 will now be invited to a private briefing with Echochamber, a creative retail agency who tracks global retail trends, on Tuesday, August 22, where they will be presented with the 10 pillars of Retail Excellence and will be given time to prepare a submission showing evidence they meet those 10 pillars. Echochamber will then consider the submissions and will proceed to selecting the Top 30 stores which will be announced on September 22. The Top30 stores will then be rigorously tested before being whittled down to the top three finalists and winners in sectoral categories.

Kerry Children’s Mental Health Services ‘in Crisis’ A SITUATION where 53 children and adolescents face a wait over a year for psychology appointments was branded “simply unacceptable”. There were 225 children and adolescents waiting for a primary care psychology appointment in Kerry at the end of June 2017. Fianna Fáil Kerry TD John Brassil noted: “What’s more disturbing is that there are 53 children and adolescents waiting longer than a year for an appointment. That’s simply unacceptable.” These figures are clear evidence of a crisis in the provision of mental health services for children in Kerry, he added.
“Vulnerable children and teenagers need this service and we have an obligation to provide it. There are major gaps in service delivery across the county. We already know that across the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service nearly one in two health and support positions, such as psychologists, psychiatric nurses and counsellors remain unfilled.” Growing up in Ireland today can pose enormous mental challenges for young people, said the Kerry TD. “As in so many areas, early intervention is critical and if we are seeing waiting times of over a year, our care services are failing,” said Deputy Brassil. “This is a crisis and we need to tackle it.”

Income insurance provides the plan holder with a regular income, which is paid out if they cannot work due to illness or injury. It is meant to replace some of their earned income if they can no longer earn an income themselves – helping to make sure that they could still enjoy a comfortable standard of living. A customer can take out income insurance if they are in full-time work or are self-employed and earn an income.
Some terms you would need to consider when applying for Income Insurance.
Guaranteed Option: Customers can choose our guaranteed option, where the rates are fully guaranteed to remain the same for the term of the plan. Reviewable Option: Customers can alternatively choose the reviewable option, where the premium rates are calculated to provide cover until the expiry age and are guaranteed for the first five years. With the reviewable option, the life company has the right to review the rates after the first five years and every five years thereafter. Expiry Ages: Expiry ages can be 55, 60 or 65 depending on the occupation and customer choice.
What are the Income Tax Relief on Payments?
Personal Plan: Under current tax law, income tax relief is available on contributions to a maximum of 10% of the individual’s total income for the year of assessment in which the contributions are paid.
Company Plan: The contributions paid by the company / employer are normally tax deductible.
Does the cover increase?
Plan holders can usually choose to increase their cover by top-up or indexation options.
What is the Deferred Period?
The deferred period is the continuous amount of time the plan holder has to be off work due to illness or injury before the incapacity benefit will be paid. The deferred period can be 13, 26 or 52 weeks depending on the customer’s occupation.
Escalation of claims
The plan holder can choose for the incapacity benefit to increase while they are claiming it. The plan holder must choose this option before they take out the plan. So Income insurance is a tax efficient way to protect your income in the unfortunate event of an illness.
For a FREE initial consultation call Philip on 066 7185723 today
Each individual’s circumstances will determine which type of Income protection option meets their needs, but whichever route you chose, all it’s really about is putting cover in place to ensure that the necessary funds will end up in the right hands at the right time, in both a cost efficient and a tax efficient manner. We advise that you seek professional advice as the information given is a guideline only and does not take into account your particular circumstances.

Tim O’Shea & Friends Hitting All The Right Notes
Tim O’Shea with Rosie Healy and Mike Kelliher.
THEY packed St Mary’s Church of Ireland on Main Street last Saturday night and now Tim O’Shea and Friends are tuning up to set toes tapping yet again this weekend. St Mary’s Church of Ireland, Main Street, will host the Irish folk and traditional music group tomorrow night, Saturday, August 5, at 8pm. But if you just can’t wait to see them this weekend, head for St James’, Listowel, where the Another Skin Too Few show rolls into town this evening at 8pm. Tim’s musical friends are Rosie Healy (Headford) on flute/whistle/vocal) and Mike Kelliher (Fossa), on accordion/harmonica/melodeon. “The concert features new music recently recorded and released on our new CD ‘Another Skin Too Few’ which remembers some of our finest Kerry musicians, sadly no longer with us,” said Tim. Their settings and arrangements of a wealth of tunes are now preserved, some wellknown, and some not-so-well-known traditional melodies. “The musicians remembered are Con Durham (Dublin and Dingle)
who lived most of his life on the Dingle peninsula and played uilleann pipes and whistles; John Cronin (Aghadoe and New York), a fine accordion player, and Stephen Carroll (Maulykevane) who also played accordion,” said Tim. “The legendary fiddler Paddy Cronin of (Kiskeam and Boston), who spent over 40 years in America, also contributes a tune to the collection. “There is an original poem and spoken word piece, recounting a visit to Kerry from Belfast poet Adrian Fox, set to the music of Sigerson Clifford.” Tim O’Shea contributes and original song in honour of Con Durham, and also, two Scottish songs picked up by Tim on his travels. So all in all a great local night, of local music, played by local musicians, spanning the generations, in one of Killarney’s most iconic and historic, beautiful acoustic spaces. Everyone welcome. Gigs will also take place during Puck Fair, Killorglin, on August 11, and back to St Mary’s Killarney Church of Ireland again for Culture night on September 22. Waterville’s Tech Amergin on September 23, is also part of the group’s “mini world your of Kerry”.

fuzzy patch that I don’t recognise and feel the thrill of discovery rise up. One always hopes it is an undiscovered comet, but deep down I know it isn’t, and when I do a bit of digging I find it is a faint nebula or galaxy. Nowadays sophisticated amateur astronomers in Ireland have computer-guided telescopes hooked up to ccd cameras and make remarkable discoveries from their backyards. They discover and track asteroids, monitor the planets for changes and discover supernovae (when a star spectacularly blows itself to bits). A handful of supernovae have been discovered from backyard observatories in Ireland in the past decade. Imagine, being the first human to observe another star destroying itself and then popping into the house for a cup of tea!!!

FROM 1845 until 1914 the largest telescope in the world stood in the grounds of Birr Castle. It was the brainchild of the 3rd Earl of Rosse and through it he made many wonderful discoveries, he named the Crab nebula and was the first to document the structure of spiral galaxies, although at the time, they didn’t truly understand their nature. He was also an amateur astronomer in the sense that he had a telescope in his backyard and used it to explore the wonders of the universe. Astronomy is one of the few sciences where amateurs can still make important scientific discoveries. The universe is a vast place and there are only so many professional telescopes turned on it. ‘I have no career left. My reputation is in tatters’ THE fired newspaper columnist Kevin Myers has apologised “unconditionally” to the BBC broadcasters Claudia Winkleman and Vanessa Feltz for the contents of a weekend article that has been criticised as being anti-Semitic and misogynistic. Speaking on 5 Live Daily on BBC radio on Wednesday morning, Myers said: “I retract. I apologise for it. There was no justification.” In the course of the article, which was about the gender pay gap at the BBC, Myers wrote in reference to Winkleman and Feltz, who are both Jewish:
“Jews are not generally noted for their insistence on selling their talent for the lowest possible price.” “I have no career left. My reputation is in tatters,” Myers added on Wednesday. He claimed that in Ireland there is not the same awareness of anti-Semitism as elsewhere. “I am a great admirer of Jews. The Jewish Council of Ireland would not have come out in support

of me if they thought I was anti-Semitic. I admire Jews because they make the most of what they are.” Myers said that he was now subject to an “enormous amount of Internet hatred” and that the Sunday Times gave him no opportunity to defend himself and fired him without notice. In the Irish Times this week, Jewish
businesswoman Caryna Camerino said “Nobody has the right, in person or in print, to decide who I am or what I’m about based on my religion or heritage.” The Dublin-based Ms Camerino added: “The men of the Jewish Representative Council of Ireland issued a statement defending Kevin Myers’s depiction of two highly-paid BBC presenters as cunning Jewesses. They say he is a friend of the Jews who made an inadvertent mistake. This baffles my lady brain. They may speak for themselves, but they don’t speak for me.”
Gardaí Examine Suitcases Found By Tina Satchwell’s Husband
Sends Private Email
A BBC chief has accidentally published disparaging comments about well-paid presenter Vanessa Feltz, who is the second best-paid woman on the broadcaster’s payroll. In a confidential memo accidentally emailed to staff, it is said Vanessa Feltz lacks the personality to front her show. It also says it is a “constant battle” for the presenter to keep up with the pace of news. The embarrassing mistake was made by station editor David Robey, who thought he was sending out a new television trailer, but instead was publishing the star’s annual review.
GARDAÍ investigating the disappearance of a woman missing since late March are hoping that DNA tests will confirm whether or not suitcases found this week near a clothes bank belonged to her. Gardaí have sent a hairbrush belonging to Tina Satchwell (45) from Youghal, Co. Cork, to the Forensic Science Ireland laboratory to build a DNA profile. They hope to use this
to see whether two suitcases found near a clothes bank at the Tesco car park in Youghal belonged to her. Ms Satchwell, nee Dingivan, has been missing from her home on Grattan Street in Youghal since March 20 when her husband, Richard, returned from a shopping trip to Dungarvan and found she had left the house. Mr Satchwell reported her missing to gardaí in Youghal four
days later on March 24, saying he had waited a few days as he thought she may have needed to “get her head straight” after what he said were several months of anxiety. Gardaí have confirmed a TV3 report that some three weeks ago Mr Satchwell spotted two suitcases beside the clothes bank at Tesco in Youghal. He thought one of them may have belonged to wife and he rang gardaí.
Scam Where Family Paid Deposit For Killarney Holiday Home That Didn’t Exist GARDAÍ are investigating a holiday home scam where a family paid deposit for a Killarney home that didn’t exist. The probe comes following an incident where a family booked a property for a week’s holiday in Kerry. They had paid a €400 deposit on the property,
having found the accommodation listing on DoneDeal.ie. A member of the affected family, Michelle Flynn from Co Clare, told Radio Kerry she started to panic when she was unable to get in contact with the alleged owner. Finbarr Garland of DoneDeal.ie says the sus-
pect, who is not from Kerry, is known to gardaí and advised buyers to take extra precaution when renting properties online, including asking for the property’s Eircode.

Trump Hits Back As Grand Jury Convened To Investigate Russia
Woman Who ‘Could Barely Walk’ Caught Snorkelling In The Maldives A WOMAN who claimed she was too disabled to walk more than three feet a minute was caught by holiday pictures of her snorkelling in the Maldives, reports the Telegraph. Linda Hoey fraudulently claimed £65,244 in Disability Living Allowance and used her disability car to avoid paying £15,690 in M6 toll charges over a 14-year period. The 58-year-old claimed that degenerative arthritis and back problems meant that she could only walk three feet (one metre) a minute and could not stretch her arms above her head. She was caught when pictures from her holiday in the Maldives to celebrate her 20th wedding anniversary to husband Michael were passed to the Department
for Work and Pensions (DWP). A court heard she was also pictured on her knees altering her daughter’s wedding dress and bent over a pool table with a cue in her hand. Inquiries also revealed that Hoey was a member of a gym and had been attending regular swimming and badminton lessons. Despite claiming that her arthritis meant she was unable to work, she was employed full-time for PartsWorld, a car accessory supplier in Cannock, Staffordshire, for 17 years. Hoey, of Tamworth, Staffordshire, was found guilty of misrepresenting her benefit claim between 2001 and 2015 and misusing an exemption pass for the M6 Toll Road between 2004 and 2015 at Stafford Crown Court.
Man Charged After He ‘Broke Into Home, Drank Champagne And Fell Asleep’ FORGET about Goldilocks and her porridge spree, a man has been charged with burglary after he allegedly broke into a home, drank a bottle of champagne belonging to the owner and then fell asleep in her bed. The 36-year-old man is accused of forcing his way into a house in Esperance, Western Australia, at lunchtime on Friday by kicking down the front door. After drinking the “quite expensive” champagne, he fell asleep, police said. When the owner of the house returned, she found the alleged
thief in her bed. She quickly left her home and called the police. The man was taken to hospital after he was found in a “very intoxicated” state, according to Esperance Police. He was later charged with burglary offences. Officer Richard Moore told ABC News: “He has consumed some champagne, I’m not sure how expensive it was but in the photo, it looks expensive. “It must have been quite potent because he has fallen asleep in the resident’s bed, which is not a good thing, and the owner has returned home and located this male person in her bed.

Tragic Surge In Road Deaths EIGHT lives were tragically lost on Irish roads over the past fortnight. Gardaí in Borrisokane are investigating a single vehicle fatal road traffic collision that occurred in Tipperary on Tuesday. A 16-year-old male was fatally injured when the car he was a rear seat passenger in collided with a tree. The Justice Minister has said that he does not believe Garda resourcing is to blame for a
large number of recent road deaths. Other lies lost on our roads since Friday include a 6-year-old boy, a 68-year-old man and four motorcyclists. In total 94 people have lost their lives on the roads this year, a decrease compared with 2016. Justice Minister Charlie Flanagan is advising people to be careful on the roads, and said he does not think garda resourcing is the issue.

Wedding of the Week
Into The West THEY met in the west of Ireland, got engaged on the west coast of France and Vanessa Ní Churráin and Gerard Kelly tied the knot in west Kerry. Vanessa, from Dingle, and Gerard, from Clostoken, Loughrea, Co Galway, first met on a night out in Halo nightclub in Galway city. He popped the question on a cliff top in Êtretat, France, in June 2015/ They were wed recently in St Mary’s Church in Dingle by Father Joe Begley and held their reception in the Dingle Skellig Hotel. Binn Bán beach, near Dingle town, formed a picture-effect backdrop as they posed for the camera of Killarney wedding photographer Trevor O’Donoghue. Lending their support on the big day were the bride’s sisters, Joanne Ní Churráin (maid of honour), Michelle Uí Shé, Olivia Smyth and Louise O’Brien (bridesmaids) The groom’s brother Kenneth Kelly was best man while his brothers Richard and Paul Kelly took on groomsman duties alongside his friend Derek Kelly. Vanessa’s nieces Rebecca Smyth and Ellie Ní Shé were delighted to take on the role of flowergirls. “Our big day was incredible, there was a clear blue sky and the sun was shining – it could not have gone better for us!” said the bride. “Having all our family and friends with us, especially those who travelled from afar, made it so special for us and wish we could do it again!” Vanessa wore a dress by Susan Neville and her makeup was by Annette O’Brien, Killarney, with hairstyling by a family friend, Mage O’Donnell. The caketopper used was the same one the bride’s parents had some 44 years before for their wedding day. The newlyweds will honeymoon in Africa this month. The bride is a GP and the groom works in business. They will reside in London.

Reviewed: Before the Fall by Noah Hawley IT OPENS with a private plane crashing into the ocean off Martha’s Vineyard shortly after takeoff so Before the Fall grabs the reader from the very start. Noah Hawley’s debut novel, The Good Father, depicted a father coming to terms with the truth about his son and here again Hawley seeks the truth – this time about the cause of the plane crash and about the lives of the passengers. Hawley’s protagonist is an artist,
Scott Burroughs, one of only two survivors of the crash – the other is a little boy, whose life Scott saves – and the novel alternates between Scott’s attempts to adjust to life as both survivor and hero, and the backstories of the plane’s other passengers, gradually teasing out the secrets they were keeping and the possible explanation for the crash. This is a compelling, compassionate tale.

The Founder
IF YOU like dark success stories, then check out The Founder. Overlooked when it hit movie theatres, this biopic of McDonald’s head honcho Ray Kroc might be one of the great American business parables of our time. Kroc (played by a sneakily sleazy Michael Keaton) didn’t actually “found” the billion-dollar fast-food model; he just took notice of a great idea dreamed up by a couple of California brothers, and cut the original progenitors out of the profits with the most savage, underhanded techniques imaginable. The Founder does little to try to soften its anti-hero’s actions, and indeed ends by wondering if allowing people like Kroc to rule the market unabated is really what the American dream is all about.

Bencic Aims To Put St Paul’s Back On The Map As St Paul’s prepare for their first season back in the National League, Croatian coach Vojkan Bencic talks to Adam Moynihan about his playing days with Red Star Belgrade, coaching around Europe and how his current squad are shaping up Adam Moynihan: Hi Vojkan. Am I pronouncing your name correctly? Voy-kan Bench-itch? Vojkan Bencic: 100% correct. AM: Good! Welcome to Killarney… Have you been to Ireland before? What are your first impressions of the town? VB: No, this is my first time. Killarney is beautiful. It’s small but it’s an ideal town for the National League. AM: You played professionally in Yugoslavia, Poland, Russia, Slovenia and Bulgaria. Did you always want to be a professional basketballer? VB: No, at first I wanted to be a football player with Partizan Belgrade. Maybe I am a better footballer than a basketballer! AM: So what made you change sports? VB: I practiced football until I was ten but then my school started doing basketball sessions, and my friends from my class started going there. It’s natural at that age that you follow your friends. My older brother also already played basketball with Red Star and he was my idol. I played with Red Star too but when I was 19 I didn’t have a chance with the first team so I went to play with other teams in the former Yugoslavia. Eight years later, in 1997, I came back to Red Star and we won the title. After that, I played in other countries as a foreign player. AM: Was that championship with Red Star the highlight of your playing career? VB: It’s difficult to say… I had beautiful moments for the smaller teams when we went, like Killarney, from the second division to first division at the start of my career. But I think the best moment was that title with Red Star. AM: And then you went into coaching in 2003. VB: Yes. Spartak Subotic was my first team after Red Star and I also finished my career there. The last six months of my career I helped them to stay in the Super League so after that I decided to be a coach in that team. I stayed there for two years and then I coached around Serbia and Europe. AM: Was that always your plan, to coach when you
stopped playing? VB: Yes, I always wanted to be a coach at the end of my career. In Serbia we have a lot of great, old coaches. The basic problem is that they don’t have time for the young coaches. The young coaches don’t get the experience to prepare the kids, to give them basic skills for basketball. At that moment, when I finished my career, Spartak Subotica gave me a chance to be a coach, so I accepted. AM: What made you want to come to Ireland? VB: Last year I had a proposal from Moycullen to go there but they had a better opportunity with another trainer. I think he’s Irish so it was cheaper for them. I stayed in Serbia but in the last three or four months I spoke with my friends in Cork and Dublin about going there to work with some clubs. Then my friend from Dublin told me Killarney were looking for a coach. I called Pádraig Weldon (club chairman) and I couldn’t refuse his proposal. AM: How does basketball In Ireland compare with other European countries? VB: It’s difficult to compare Irish basketball with European basketball. In Europe you have hard practice two times a day and a lot of games. So really this is a new experience for me; I need to grow, just like the St Paul’s basketball team. AM: You’ve had the opportunity to work with the local players for a few weeks now. Have you been impressed by the standard? VB: They have a good attitude which is great for the club, and for the youngsters who can see how the older players play for this town. We need more practice – we’ve practiced maybe ten times which isn’t enough at the moment – but they smile at practice and that’s enough for me. That means I’m doing a good job. AM: There will be three foreign players joining the squad. What can you tell me about them? VB: I’ve watched videos of the American and the two Bulgarian players. The American is young, he’s a good shooter, he can play in two different positions
Killarney Advertiser Announces
Media Sponsorship Of Scotts Lakers IT IS an exciting time for basketball in Killarney with the National League returning this September. Be Part of It – Become a Patron St Paul’s has launched a patron season ticket to help fund the National League team. The patron season ticket is just €100 and allows entry to all games for one adult and one child. It also includes listing on match day game programme and St Paul’s website. Vojkan Bencic
(one and two guard) and he will give us space for the big guys on offense. Last year he scored between 25 and 30 points so it’ll be good for the youngsters to see his shooting. The Bulgarians are older guys with a lot of experience. One is a point guard and one is a centre. We need bigger guys because at the moment we don’t have big Irish players. We hope Andy Fitzgerald will sign for us and there’s another young guy, but we need some bigger players. AM: It’s probably too early to say but what are your goals for the coming season? VB: Usually when a team comes from a lower division, you hope to stay in that division in the first season. We need to grow as a team. If we have a chance to do better, it would be great. AM: It’s very exciting to have such a high level of basketball back in Killarney. I’m sure the team will get great support. VB: Yeah, I saw that the club has 400 kids. It’s a great opportunity for them to see real basketball and real players. It’s like me, when I was young I always had some idol in basketball and you try to be on his level. It’s great for Killarney as a town to be back on the basketball map.

I’VE always been a fan of CACI treatments, which are heralded as the non-surgical “facelift” responsible for the ever-youthful complexions of celebrities such as Jennifer Lopez, Jennifer Aniston and Sadie Frost. Our advanced non-invasive facial, with 20 years of medical research behind it, uses microcurrent impulses to lift and tone the facial muscles and the neck area, whilst improving skin elasticity and reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. This gives a more youthful, fresh appearance and glow! The treatment uses microcurrent, ultrasound, orbital microdermabrasion and brilliant LED, as well as a 40% hyaluronic acid-infused gel mask. Every aspect of ageing is addressed as well as acne, rosacea, pigmentation, sagging muscles and improved skin. The full CACI facial takes 90 minutes and you will feel like you have given your face a workout, all 32 muscles. The glow and energy released gives your skin a new lease of life. The 40-minute eyelift facial will revive tired eyes, and reduce puffiness. It has a lifting effect and helps smooth away the fine lines and wrinkles. The neck lift is a 40-minute facial that lifts, tones and tightens neck muscles. Skin appears re- energised and firmer. ECM or electrical cellulite massage treatment delivers results when it comes to lifting, firming, toning and breaking down cellulite. This treatment takes 30 minutes.

An exciting one to look out for is Clarins. We love the Graphik Ink Liner, €26, which offers an easy-peasy way of perfecting the feline flick. Breathing Space IF LIKE me you find traditional manicures can take their toll on your talons, look into breathable varieties of nail varnish. Inglot’s O2M Breathable Nail Enamel is one I have tried out over the past week. It promises to allow water and air to pass through thanks to a highly advanced polymer. To prolong life of the nail enamel, cover with a layer of O2M Breathable Top Coat. Both products also ensure air and water permeability.

Half A Million Tech Job Vacancies By 2020 OVER half a million job vacancies for coders, engineers, and other tech specialists are expected within the EU by 2020, according to the European Commission’s latest assessment. Evidently, there is a large gap between qualifications and labour market needs, particularly with regard to specialists. That’s something we must be mindful of for the next generation. However, Ireland’s digital skillset has not increased in the last two years. The 2017 European Digital Progress Report shows just 44% of the Irish population have basic digital skills, below the EU average of 56% – meaning there has been no improvement recorded in that area over the last two years. In terms of human capital, the report ranks Ireland 12th out of the EU28. However, Ireland holds onto first place for the percentage of STEM (Science, technology, engineering and mathematics) graduates. Furthermore, the share of ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) specialists employed in Ireland remains above the EU average, though it has fallen (3.7%), resulting in a drop from seventh place to tenth in the EU28 comparison this year.In keeping with the European trend, Ireland continues to face shortages of ICT specialists to fill high-level job vacancies. Since
2012, half of all businesses who tried to recruit ICT specialists in Ireland experienced difficulties, according to this latest report. I note the Irish government’s commitment and efforts to boost digital skills in Ireland from primary education upwards. As a long-standing advocate for the Cork-born CoderDojo, a global network of voluntary coding clubs for youth, I believe the project sets a best practice example: Having founded the CoderDojo Ambassadors initiative at the European Parliament, in conjunction with the non-profit organisation, we have encouraged MEPs to help launch coding clubs in their home countries. The project has also highlighted the enthusiasm amongst Europe’s youth for more connectivity. They want to engage and learn from the latest technologies, but they need access to tutors, equipment and of course internet technologies to do that. We must do our best to provide it. Overall, Ireland takes eighth place in the 2017 European Digital Progress Report which assesses each Member State based on connectivity, human capital, use of internet, integration of digital technology, and eGovernment. Seán Kelly, MEP, Killarney

Trócaire Thanks The Parishioners Of Kerry ON BEHALF of Trócaire I would like to thank parishioners in Co. Kerry for their support of the national Church collection held on 22/23 July which was called by the Bishops of Ireland. The money donated to this collection will fund Trócaire’s life-saving work in drought-ravaged east Africa. East Africa stands on the brink of catastrophe with almost 25 million people at risk of starvation. The support Trócaire has received from people across the county will enable us to provide emergency food, water and medical care to people across Somalia, South Sudan, Ethiopia and Kenya. Our health centres and feeding programmes are saving lives but the needs in the region are enormous. The generosity of people in Ireland will allow us to reach even more people with life-saving aid. We are very grateful to the Bishops of Ireland for calling for collections to be taken up at all Masses across Kerry to support Trócaire’s emergency response and I have no doubt that parishioners have responded with their usual generosity. I would encourage readers to visit our website – trocaire. org – or follow us on social media for information about how their support
is helping us save lives in east Africa. The people of Ireland have shown time and again that they have an amazing affinity for, and solidarity with, people in the developing world who are facing crisis. Governments of the world could do worse than follow this example as the response of the international community to this disaster has just not been good enough. Globally, this crisis has received very little attention. Appeals for aid are under-funded. For example, the UN has received just 37% of the funding it needs to respond to the crisis in Somalia. The world is distracted by the actions of a handful of powerful politicians, while in east Africa millions suffer in silence. It is an absolute scandal that in 2017 so many are going hungry. Thank you once again to all your readers who have donated to our life-saving appeal. Donations can also be made directly to Trócaire at www. trocaire.org or by phoning 1850 408 408 (ROI) or 0800 912 1200 (NI). Eamonn Meehan, Executive Director, Trócaire, Maynooth

The worst thing that can hit an artistic person is doubt, says Grace Foley
Ask The Universe
I AM a firm believer that I am never alone. Since I was a young child I have known that I have a guardian angel looking after me and now that I am an adult I need my angel more than ever! The worst thing that can hit an artistic person is doubt. Doubt can hit you out of nowhere. It can totally derail you and dull your artistic nature. It eats away at your time and makes you second-guess all your decisions. Having such a fickle career can lead us artists to experience doubt quite often if we are not careful. We start asking ourselves if we are crazy to do what we do but I think we probably need to be a little crazy for this business! It is so important then for us to know that there is something working for us outside of ourselves. I believe that sometimes, when doubt has got its clutches into you, you must just say, “Uni-
verse...help!” I recently experienced some doubt as to whether I am mad to be creating a career for myself in such an unstable field. Then, one day, the universe answered. I was approached by a woman who had lost her brother and wanted to thank me for the comfort that one song on my album had given her through an incredibly dark time. I then opened an email from a young child from Germany who had loved my concert in Kenmare and wanted me to know that. This was followed by numerous wedding music enquiries! So, artists, if you are questioning yourself and maybe feel lost, why not ask the universe for help? Maybe say a prayer or meditate? The answers sometimes lie in the energy around us. • Grace’s website is www.gracefoley.ie
Kerry Comedian Grabs Headlines at Galway Fringe Festival KERRY comedian and magician StevenevetS, alias Steve Mills, won plaudits from all sides following his performance last week at the Galway Fringe Festival. This was the first time for the Killorglin-based performer to attend the Comedy at the Fringe event having performed many shows at venues locally in the recent past and was a major coup for him in his career development. Steve has also performed at comedy venues in Dublin and other parts of the country and he can also be regularly seen at festival events nationwide. The one-hour performance at the Galway Fringe incorporated a mix of comedy and magic in a novel approach that catered for all age groups from 5 to 90 that kept the attention of audience throughout. In addition to this programme, he also performs a programme that caters for street events such as festivals as well as performing close-up magic events. Kerry audiences will get the chance to see him in action again on the streets both at Puck Fair, as well as at the Rose of Tralee Festival.

A Finish For Meeke & Nagle TWELVE months on from an epic win on Rally Finland, the fastest rally on the calendar, Meeke and Nagle brought their under-performing Citroen C3 home in eighth place. Meeke is one of the fastest drivers on the WRC at present. To take advantage of his speed and talent, all the stars need to be lined up for ultimate success. For Meeke that was this year. A full works drive with a car he helped develop, up against competitors in all new machinery. The stage was set. However halfway through the season with only one victory and a string
of mistakes and mechanical issues he finds himself fighting for his seat in the Citroen WRC team. This led to an eighth place result last weekend to what we can only suspect as driving to orders. Meeke needs to drive flat out which has it risks but also its rewards. Unfortunately for Citroen the risk quota is full so there is nothing to trade for reward which will leave Meeke towing the line for the remainder of the season. On the Sharp end, novice Finnish driver Esapekka Lappi, driving for only the fourth time at the WRC’s top level,
won last weekend’s event in a Toyota Yaris. Lappi, who became the sixth different driver to win in nine rounds, fought with experienced team-mate Jari-Matti Latvala before retired from the lead on Saturday with electrical issues. In contrast to Meeke’s weekend, his teammate, the ever-consistent Craig Breen was the leading Citroën driver in fifth. The championship leader going into the event, Sebastian Ogier crashed out leaving Thierry Neuville take the lead in the championship.
F1
Vettel Extends His Lead LEWIS HAMILTON has suffered a dent in his championship hopes after rival Sebastian Vettel held off Ferrari team-mate Kimi Raikkonen to win the Hungarian Grand Prix on Sunday. Hamilton will now head into the sport’s summer break 14 points behind Vettel in this most topsy-turvy of championship battles. The advantage is still with Mercedes with more power circuits to come, however with Vettel’s difficulties in the race Hamilton was unable to react giving signs that the power advantage over Ferrari is getting ever smaller. The bigger news in F1 this week: Robert Kubica capped an impressive return to official F1 action as he set the fourth fastest time on the final day of testing in
Hungary. The Pole, driving a current F1 car for the first time since severely injuring his right arm in a rally crash in early 2011, clocked a best lap of 1m 18.572s – 1.4s adrift of Sebastian Vettel’s table topping time for Ferrari. Kubica also
went some way to allaying fears about his fitness as he completed a mammoth 142 laps. What a story for F1 and sport in general to see Robert Kubica on the F1 grid in 2018.

Garden Magic Debby Looney
Debby Looney hails the beauty of a colourful plant that some see as a bit of a pest
Orange Is
The New Black MONTBRETIAS, coppertips, falling stars, autumn’s gold, or, in Irish, Fealastram dearg, whatever you call them, the hedgerows are vibrant with the orange of the Crocosmia. Yes, some may even call it a weed! The Latin name for Montbretia is Crocosmia, from the Greek krokos – saffron – and osme – smell. There is a faint smell of saffron from these flowers, but perhaps it is much stronger in the warmer climes of Africa, where it comes from. The common name, Montbretia, comes from the name of the French botanist, Ernest Coquebert de Montbret, who accompanied Napoleon’s army to Egypt (he died there at the young age of 20). While many of us do see this colourful plant as a bit of a pest, there are some beautiful varieties, such as Lucifer, the very tall, deep red variety in flower at the moment. The smaller variety, Emily McKenzie has yellow flowers, or Carmin Brilliant, which has fire engine red flowers, but only grows to 50cm. Then there is the giant variety, Crocosmia masoniorum, which grows to over a metre, or the bronze leaved, Coleton Fishacre. They are all very easy to grow, and also excellent to use as cut flowers! The temptation to sit back and enjoy the summer is a strong one, but remember to cut as you go! Carry secateurs with you at all times, and prune shrubs as soon as they have stopped flowering. Perennials and herbs such as Lavender, thyme, summer flowering heathers and many more should be cut back hard to prevent them getting woody. Lupins, scabious, eryngiums, and many other herbaceous plants will flower a second time if deadheaded. I must admit, at this time of the year, when bedding plants, containers and baskets are at their fullest, I am very tempted to tip them all into the compost heap and start afresh… it all becomes a little too colourful and cheery for me, and the thought of some nice tidy cyclamen is very tempting indeed! But no! Do not give into the temptation of buying cyclamen before the second weekend of September! They WILL DIE! They are available in garden centres, but this is a trap – you will be buying and planting them a second time! It is simply too warm for them. So stick with the regular feeding and watering a little while longer, and if, like me, you find it all a little unruly, cut those. • Got a gardening question? Life Through The Lens Of The Gospels
MATTHEW 17:1-9: The transfiguration experience was one that, for Jesus, clarified his relationship with his Father and strengthened him for the future. It was also a moment of deep revelation for the disciples. What have been the experiences, the moments of insight, which for you have clarified your sense of who you are, and what is your relationship with God? The disciples were prepared for the experience by getting an invitation from Jesus to come apart, to withdraw to the mountain. Have there been times when going apart has been an important element in preparing you for a deep experience? On the mountain the disciples saw Jesus in a new way. His appearance changed. Sometimes in friendship there are moments of sharing in which we get to know a friend in a new and deeper way. Have you had that experience in human friendship, or in your relationship with Jesus and God? Recall when that happened, and what it was like for you. After their special experience the disciples came down the mountain again. We cannot live each day at the level of special spiritual experiences, but the memory of them can strengthen us in difficult times. What memories encourage you in time of trouble? John Byrne OSA, Veritas
Being Transfigured
FROM the event of the Transfiguration I would like to take two significant elements that can be summed up in two words: ascent and descent. We all need to go apart, to ascend the mountain in a space of silence, to find ourselves and better perceive the voice of the Lord. This we do in prayer. But we cannot stay there! Encounter with God in prayer inspires us anew to “descend the mountain” and return to the plain where we meet many
Support Groups
brothers and sisters weighed down by fatigue, sickness, injustice, ignorance, poverty both material and spiritual. To these brothers and sisters in difficulty, we are called to bear the fruit of that experience with God, by sharing the grace we have received. Pope Francis, Veritas
The Mountaintop
IN THE Scriptures, the mountains are often places where people encounter God. Jesus takes the disciples up to the mountaintop to pray, to a quiet place, away from all the attention and the crowds. They have the most wonderful experience as we read in the Gospel today. Can you recall a place where you have felt deep peace or a sense of experiencing God? In nature or in the places you go for some “time-out” for yourself? Perhaps it is in special moments with family and friends; times of joy or sorrow. These “mountaintop” experiences nourish us, can bring us insights or help us to deal with difficult periods in our lives. They can bring feelings of euphoria, deep joy and blessing and often sustain us in life. No wonder the disciples wanted to build “three dwellings” so that Moses, Elijah and Jesus would stay with them like this forever. However, we cannot remain in those experiences forever. Jesus’ way involves both time for encounters with mystery but also coming down from the mountain and continuing on life’s journey and mission. Can we carve out these moments of quiet in our busy days to be with the Word, to create the space to listen and make room for these encounters with the Lord? This week, imagine yourself in this story as you read “Jesus took me with him and went up on the mountain to pray …” Jane Mellet, Veritas

Kelly Stakes His Claim As Kerry’s Full-Time No. 1 With a ridiculous selection of goalkeeping talent at his disposal, Eamonn Fitzmaurice has a tough job on his hands, writes Adam Moynihan
Legion goalkeeper Brian Kelly is beaten by this penalty from Feale Rangers in the Kerry Senior football County Championship clash at Fitzgerald Stadium, Killarney on Sunday. Pic: Eamonn Keogh
WE’VE never really had a shortage of sticky defenders, rangy midfielders or skilful forwards around these parts but surely no Kerry manager has ever had such a talented bunch of goalkeepers in his ranks. I’m sure Eamonn Fitzmaurice counts himself very fortunate to have top class stoppers like Brian Kelly, Shane Ryan and Shane Murphy to choose from, and that’s leaving out Brendan Kealy who stepped down from the set-up earlier this summer. Naturally four into one doesn’t go and how the Finuge man has chosen to deal with the goalkeeping equation has been the source of much heated debate since he took the job in 2012. Brendan Kealy and Brian Kelly have shared the jersey over the course of the last few years with neither really managing to nail down the No. 1 spot on a permanent basis, and Fitzmaurice has been known to switch things up when you least expect it. For the short-term future at least, the issue seems to be fairly straightforward. Legion’s Brian Kelly has been the preferred choice in this year’s championship and he was outstanding last weekend against Galway as he put in a Man-of-the-Match display to keep the Tribesmen at bay. Kerry looked comfortable throughout but things might have been a lot different had Kelly not leapt into action to first deny Ian Burke in the 4th minute and then Seánie Armstrong in the 43rd. A goal at that stage would have cut the deficit to just a single point and would have given Kerry’s opponents a massive boost. Kelly will certainly keep his position for the remainder
of the campaign but his inclusion from the start of this year’s championship was somewhat surprising – that is if it’s still possible to be taken aback by Fitzmaurice making a bold call. Kealy had started in the league and had, by and large, impressed. There was a lot of talk about the Kilcummin man’s performance in the last few minutes of the League Final against Dublin but, if you look at it closely, I think too much was made out of very little. I don’t think any keeper in the country, even an excellent kicker like Kealy, could consistently find an open man against Dublin when they’re manically pressing for an equaliser in stoppage time. The biggest talking point was the incident where he caught a ball under pressure and booted it away into space, but he had three Dublin attackers bearing down on him. If he took it into contact he could easily have been dispossessed and instead of talking about Kealy gifting Dublin possession, and eventually a point, we could have been talking about Kealy gifting Dublin a goal and, quite possibly, the league. In the end, Fitzmaurice opted for Kelly when the summer rolled around and Kealy decided to step away from the intercounty stage with 28 championship appearances, seven Munster titles, a National League and an All-Ireland to his name. With Kealy out of the picture, Rathmore’s Shane Ryan has filled the vacant No. 2 spot. Ryan is tall and accurate and plays his club football at full forward, but he has looked solid between the sticks for Jack O’Connor’s minors and U-21s. Kealy’s departure has also opened the door for Dr Crokes’ Shane Murphy. It seems unlikely that he’ll
make the final cut for the semi-final, or the final if Kerry get there, but he will at least be a member of the extended panel as third choice goalkeeper. Murphy has been sensational for the Crokes since his controversial transfer from Kilcummin and as highly as I rate Brian Kelly and Brendan Kealy, I was genuinely shocked that he wasn’t called into the Kerry camp at the earliest possible opportunity this year. His kicking is immense, as is his shot-stopping, and he has already established himself as one of the Crokes’ most important players. In the end, he was a victim of his own success at club level as his involvement in the Club Championship prevented him from getting a run in the National League, and Fitzmaurice decided to stick with what he knew. Again, it’s not a knock on Kelly or Kealy in any way, shape or form. They’re both incredibly talented goalkeepers and as a Legion and Athletic man, I’m always delighted to see both of them do well. Nor is it a slight on Shane Ryan. I haven’t caught a whole pile of him in goal to be fair but from what I have seen, he’s more than capable of doing a job there for Kerry. Next year might be interesting now that Murphy has his foot in the door. Fitzmaurice has a history of chopping and changing his goalkeeper so it is possible that he’ll get a look in at some stage, and Ryan will be hoping to stake his claim as well, but for the moment Brian Kelly has a firm grip on the Kerry No. 1 shirt and deservedly so. More performances like the one he gave last Sunday and fellas will have a tough job taking it from him.

Kerry Qualify For All-Ireland Semi-Final Words: Eamonn Fitzgerald Kerry 1-18 Galway 0-13 Kerry qualified for the All Ireland SFC semi-final by virtue of an eightpoint win over Galway at Croke Park on Sunday last. An eight-point winning margin indicates a clear-cut victory, but this was far from vintage supremacy by Kerry. In particular they can thank Brian Kelly, Paul Murphy and captain Johnny Buckley for their performances. All gave man-ofthe-match performances. My man of the match was Brian Kelly. Not alone did he keep a clean sheet, but he saved at least three golden goal opportunities by Galway. I felt that if anyone of those passed him in that Galway would be capable of presenting a real challenge overall. Kelly excelled on those clearcut chances that Galway had. Out the field Paul Murphy excelled in his basic defensive play and he also initiated several scoring opportunities for the Kerry forwards. He also scored two valuable points. Yes, another terrific display by the pocket rocket from Rathmore. Johnny Buckley captained Kerry for the first time after a long lay-off through injury. He led his team magnificently. Scorer of two points he tracked back so often to help out the Kerry defence when they were under pressure. He also fielded some great balls.
DONAGHY’S GOAL Kieran Donaghy had a tremendous first half and it was his early goal that eased the way for Kerry’s dominance on the scoreboard. Although he was doubly marked he rose above the Galway defenders and fielded a magnificent high ball. He still had to be very good to get past the defence and was forced on to his left leg, but he was equal to the challenge and shot the ball to the Galway net with his weaker leg. Anytime the ball was sent in high Donaghy fetched it and caused a lot of trouble to E. Kerins the Galway full back. Star also added a point sending Kerry in to the dressing room at half time leading by five points, 1-10 to 0-8. Apart from Murphy and Kelly the other Kerry defenders were often under severe pressure as Galway came in search of goals. I thought that
Rugby News ... Words: Liam Murphy NEXT Wednesday, the eagerly awaited Women’s Rugby World Cup kicks off in earnest next weekend. The pool matches taking place in two venues – the UCB Bowl and Billing’s Park, UCD in Dublin on August 9, 13 and 17 and the playoffs and final will take place in the Kingspan Stadium, Belfast on the 26th. In what promises to be a feast of top class rugby, tickets have pretty much sold out. Reigning champions England will be hoping to win back to back trophies, however they received the bad news last week that their contracts will
Shane Enright would be black carded for his tackle on Johnny Heaney. However, the referee saw it differently and Enright was left on the field of play.
JAMES O’DONOGHUE James O’Donoghue never got his usual game going and he was obviously carrying an injury in to the game. He lasted 49 minutes and failed to score from play. He did score a single point from a free but he was unable to wiggle his way in for his trademark scores. Before the game he was regarded as the most dangerous Kerry forward and it is hard to believe that he got no score from play. Not surprisingly, he was replaced by Jack Savage in the 49th minute. Stephen O’Brien came on as a sub in the 39th minute for Mikey Geaney, who never got to grips with his game. O’Brien is a very exciting player coming on as an impact sub and true to form he ran at the Galway defence with his usual burst of speed adding two points to the Kerry tally.
IAN BURKE Still Galway battled on as Kerry held on to that five or six-point lead. Ian Burke and S. Armstrong were the most dangerous Galway forwards but overall their forwards shot some terrible wides. Too often they tried to score a goal which would have made for a more exciting finish. Kerry were not going to be caught as they extended the winning margin to eight points. They were worthy winners, but the game lacked excitement in comparison with the Mayo versus Roscommon game which ended in an exciting draw. That replay goes ahead on this bank holiday Monday. I expect Mayo to win this one, if they can shore up their defence which let Roscommon in for two early goals just like they did in the Connacht final. So Kerry move in to the semi-final. It is looking like a Dublin v Kerry final once more, but Eamonn Fitzmaurice will be taking it “one day at a time, one game at a time”. Scorers for Kerry: K. Donaghy (1-1); P. Geaney (0-4, 1 free); J. Buckley, P. Murphy, D. Moran, S. O’Brien, B.J. Keane (0-2 each); J. O’Donoghue (free), D. Walsh, J. Savage (0-1 each). KERRY: B. Kelly; F. Fitzgerald, S. Enright, M. Griffin; P.
not be renewed upon their return, win lose or draw. The RFU in England has stated its intention to focus on Rugby 7’s after the tournament, which can’t be a nice thing to hear as the England XV team prepare for the World Cup. Our own Irish squad must be another favourite to get on well in the World Cup. A pretty difficult pool awaits with Australia, Japan and France standing between Ireland and a place in the Semi finals. There has been a huge focus in the media on the World Cup with the trophy touring the entire country and even spending a fantastic day here in Killarney visiting Fossa, Faha and Cullina National Schools. The children were all delighted to see the trophy up close and they had
lots and lots of questions for those of us who travelled with the trophy. Events like this are great to promote rugby and in particular to help develop girls rugby, which is seeing participation levels at an all time high right across the country. Best of luck to head coach Tom Tierney and Munster’s own Niamg Briggs who captains the side. Also, best wishes to Ciara O’Connor who hails from Killorglin and plays with Connacht who plays in her maiden Rugby World Cup. Best of luck to Ciara ‘Junior’ Griffin who hails from Ballymac and plays with Munster, who visited Killarney RFC with the Trophy only a month ago. Come on, Ireland!

O’Donoghue (48); A. Maher for J. Barry (54); B.J. Keane for K. Donaghy (57); K. Young for T. Morley (63); J. Lyne for D. Walsh (67).
All Ireland Under 17 Semi Final Kerry have been fixed to play their All Ireland Under 17 Football Semi Final against Roscommon on Saturday, August 12, in Ennis with a 2pm throwin time. The other semi- final between Meath and Tyrone will take place in Breffini Park on Wednesday, August 8. Extra time will apply in the event of a draw and if the teams are still level then a free taking competition will decide the outcome on the day as follows: • Each team will nominate five free takers for the competition and indicate to the referee in which order (1 to 5) the free takers will take the frees • The 5 players above must be chosen from players who have participated in the game, either in normal time or in one of the periods of Extra Time. • Players who receive a red card in Hurling or Football, and players who receive a black card in Football, in normal time or any of the four periods of Extra Time are not permitted to participate in the free-taking competition. • The game is awarded to whichever team scores more of their five frees. • If still level then sudden death frees to be taken using the same 5 players in order (i.e. first sudden death free is taken by the player who took the first free for each side, 2nd sudden death free if required to be taken by the player who took the 2nd free and so on). • If a player scores in sudden death and his direct opponent misses, the game is awarded to the team of the player who has scored. • The sudden death element will continue until such time as there is a definite outcome (i.e. returning to the first player(s) and repeating the sequence again if required)

Cian Tobin
Spa forward Cian Tobin talks to Adam Moynihan about his friend Ryan O’Carroll, playing ball in London, and some more about his friend Ryan O’Carroll
Welcome home, Cian. Thanks Adam. Are you around for long? Six weeks. I’m going back to Abu Dhabi then to get my colour back. How did you get on in London? Did you play much ball over? Yeah I ran the show. I played a bit with Kingdom Kerry Gaels and lots of soccer with Lymore Gardens. What’s the standard of soccer like there? They’re ballers. Technically very good. What about Ryan O’Carroll, how did he fare? That fella’s a genius. The best player on the team? No, that was Tarik Roberts. He was at Leyton Orient when he was younger. East End boy. He’d be in the Premier League only for his attitude. Have you been following Spa’s season? Yeah they’re going to get promoted, especially if I’m starting centre forward against Kenmare. You’re confident so? Yeah, if we get Shane Lynch back as well. He’s getting old though, and lazy. Concentrating big time on the gym. Which of your teammates would you least like to get stuck in a lift with? Ryan O’Carroll surely? No! We’d have some craic! Andrew Garnett. Why? Because he’s always giving out. Which of your teammates is the best at Tinder? Ryan. 100%. Only because you can’t see how tall he is on Tinder. Who’s the worst dressed? Me. Agreed. Tell the people what you wear. Socks and sliders. Or a kandora. The king wears what he wants! Who spends the most time in the gym? Lynch. There’s bags of protein all over the house. He brushes his teeth with protein. If you could bring back one ex-player to line out for Spa this year, who would it be? Colm Tobin. Who’s the best player you’ve ever played with? Jamie Doolan when he was in his minor form. Who’s the best athlete you’ve ever played with? Shane Cronin I think… He’s built for football. If you had to transfer to another local club, who would it be? For soccer, I’d go to Park. What’s your proudest sporting moment?
Getting to the Hogan Cup final with the Sem in 2008 and getting to the All-Ireland Intermediate final with Spa in 2010. And the most embarrassing? Losing both of them! If you had to compare yourself to a professional athlete, who would it be? Tony Adams because he loves the lush and he’s a baller as well. A Romford boy, same as me. If you could go for a drink with any three sportspeople, living or dead, who would they be? Paolo Di Canio, Tony Adams and Kieran Slattery. Is there another sport you haven’t tried that you think you’d be good at? I’d be some basketballer. Flip O’Connor wouldn’t get a look in. What are you basing that on? My wingspan. What’s the best sporting moment of all time? Athletic winning the double. 100%. Are you gutted you missed it? Depressed, yeah. But I was very happy. Normally I’d be a bit jealous but I was genuinely so happy. Do you have any nicknames? Tobes. Is there an app on your phone you couldn’t live without? City Mapper. It shows you all the tube stations. Or Snapchat. Who’s your favourite snapper? The Kid. He never answers his phone so it’s the only way to get in contact with him. What’s your most-used emoji?
What’s the best show on TV? Love Island. I’m going on it next year! What would you sing at karaoke? I’m Forever Blowing Bubbles. What’s your favourite song at the moment? Shut Down by Skepta. Who’s the most famous person in your phone? Katie Wright. Rio Ferdinand’s bird. You don’t have her number. I do. No you don’t! I’ll get it like. I’ll have it for tomorrow!
What would you have for your last meal? Six pints in the Speak with my friends. Who would play you in a movie about your life? I’d let Michael Fassbender do it. I feel bad for him because I met him on a plane once and I didn’t recognise him. And last one: can you tell me a joke? Did you hear about the two fellas who stole the calendar? They got six months each. Someone already said that. They stole it off me so, 100%. Okay, how about this. I tried to catch fog once. Mist. You can do better than that… Right. What’s not heavy and blue? I don’t know. Light blue. Good one, Tobes! Safe!

National U-16 Matchplay: A decent showing by our U-16’s in St Stephens in Cork at the weekend as four of them made it through to the Semi-Finals in both the Championship and Plate Competitions. Adam Kelly made it to the Plate Final after defeating Ryan Neeson in the Semi-Finals but he lost out in the Final 3&2 to winner Aaron Roche from the host club. Aaron had defeated Erin Moloney in the other Semi-Final. In the Championship Cillian Courtney won a great Quarter-Final with Padraic Looney at the first playoff hole to reach the Semis but he was defeated on Sunday morning by the eventual winner Seanie Bellew of Meath. Jack McCarthy was also a Quarter-Finalist in this grade. We thank Gearoid Cronin, Helena Cronin Martin and Lorcan Martin and the parents for looking after our large contingent of players at the weekend. Club U-16 Strokeplay: A great event last Monday as a playoff was needed to decide the outcome between Nathan Cronin and Noah Sexton. Nathan eventually won at the seventh playoff hole as Niall McGuillicuddy finished third. Other prize winners included Erin Moloney (First 18 Gross), Cillian Courtney (Second 18 Gross) Fintan Martin (Fourth) and Jack O’Sullivan (Hole-in-One). Adult Club Strokeplay: A good turnout of 27 for last Friday evening’s competition sponsored by Charlie Foleys Bar Killarney. Lorcan Martin had a big win

On The Ball | Monday 5.30pm Dr Crokes Gaa
RESULTS: 2-13 Dingle 0-10. The visitors were well on top in the first quarter. They scored two points without reply in the early minutes and could have been further ahead but for missing several good chances. When Kieran O’Leary had our first score, a goal at the end of the first quarter it put us a point in front 1-0 to 0-2 against the run of play. Our opponents went ahead a few minutes later, scoring two unanswered points. The last seven minutes of the half belonged to us as we scored 1-4 without reply for a half time lead of 2-4 to 0-4. The first of these scores a point in the 23rd minute was our first point of the game. Dingle had a good start to the second half with two points to leave just four points between the teams. We got well on top in the next ten minutes and put six points on the scoreboard. This put us ten points clear at the end of the third quarter, 2-10 to 0-6. Our opponents had the next two points but we again dominated the last ten minutes outscoring the visitors three points to two and a result of 2-13 to 0-10. Even though this was not a vintage crokes display, we can take some positives out of it, the return of Eoin Brosnan who had a good solid display and the accurate shooting of Chris Brady and Colm Cooper who between them scored seven points from play. Eight of our players got their names on the scoresheet.

U14 FOOTBALL: Well done to the Kilcummin U14 team who turned in a fantastic performance in Fitzgerald Stadium on Saturday evening last to record a 5-18 to 5-13 win over Dr. Crokes in the East Kerry Division 2 league final. On a dry evening with perfect conditions, the standard of football was high with many of our young team making their stadium debut. Kilcummin opened brightly and kicked five excellent points on the trot. However, after recording a few wides, Crokes replied with 1-1. The sides swapped goals but Kilcummin finished the half in style to head to the dressing room with a well-deserved lead of 3-13 to 2-7. That lead was reduced dramatically on the restart with Crokes scoring two quick goals, but again our boys responded and found the net at the other end. Kilcummin then held the edge from there to the end, and playing some great free-flowing football they went on a record a deserved five point win. Every player on the entire panel played their part in this EK league campaign and the win was a just reward for their superb dedication to training throughout the year.

Glenflesk GAA
GLENFLESK MINORS: (Sponsored By O`Briens Topoil And the Kerryway) Having already met in the Co. minor league this year and playing out a closely fought game, both teams were expecting a tough game and so it transpired. Glenflesk were the better team in the opening half thanks to a fine midfield display by Alan Murphy and the score taking of Dara Fleming and Ian Roche who finished the game with 12 points, but a goal from Johnathan Kissane kept Beaufort in touch and Glenflesk had just a 1 point half time lead for their efforts. HT Score Glenflesk 0-09. Beaufort 1-05. The second half of this match was a different story and much like Beaufort’s Senior side of late, their Minor counterparts showed a great ability to get goals and 4 second half goals from Johnathan Kissane, William Joy, Ciaran Kennedy and Keith Floyd proved the difference. Final score Glenflesk O-17 Beaufort 5-10. GLENFLESK JUNIORS: (Sponsored by O’Brien’s Topoil And the Kerryway). Our Junior team bowed out of the O Sullivan Cup on Tuesday last, losing out to a good Spa team. FT Spa 5-12 Glenflesk 2-10. LOTTO: No winner of the lotto which took place in Spillane’s Bar Jackpot €6,400. Numbers were 12, 24, 29, 30. The next draw will take place in Corner Bar on 14/08/17 and the Jackpot is €6,600 KERRY JUNIORS: Best of Luck to Jeff O Donoghue and Daniel O Brien and the Kerry Juniors when they face Meath in the All Ireland Junior Final this Saturday in Portlaois. Killarney Legion
E.K.DIV.1 U14 FINAL: Killarney Legion 1-19 Glenflesk 0-12. Four in a row for the u14’s as they got the better of a competitive Glenflesk team. They needed to be as good as they were as St. Agathas upped the ante in the second half to narrow the gap to just a single point. However, the Legion youngsters have shown a great team ethic all year and with William Shine, Sean O Leary and Donnchadh Warren to the fore they regained the advantage having weathered the storm. Critical to the win - and not for the first time this year - was the performance of goalie Aaron O Sullivan who pulled off three great saves at vital times. Kieran Pierce, Ethan O Neill and Patryk Komosa all caught the eye and rather tellingly three points from Matthew Horgan and Sam Benson when introduced proved to be decisive. Well done to all involved. U16 BOYS: Killarney Legion 3-13 Austin Stacks 4-9. Another fine showing for the u16 boys as they defeated the Stacks to continue their good run in the Div.1 league. A slow start to the game gave little indication of the ding dong battle that ensued. Trailing going into the final stretch it took a serious effort by the Legion lads to overhaul their illustrious visitors, but with Niall McGillicuddy, Eoin O Sullivan, Peter O Sullivan and Cian O Leary all in top form and Christian Casey very alert on the breaking ball they added two late points to win the day. A side that shows great promise and very well managed and coached.
