Funding down but demand for food up - say SVdP volunteers
With funding decimated and a huge increase in families seeking assistance as a result of COVID this year the St Vincent de Paul (SVdP) is urging the public to help. | By Michelle Crean As volunteers prepare hundreds of hampers for the vulnerable in Killarney and surrounds, the Killarney Conference is expecting a massive demand on their services. Speaking this week to the Killarney Advertiser, President of the local conference Breda Dwyer said that 2020 "is the toughest year" the service has experienced to date. Not alone have they lost out on church gate collections - including the annual Christmas one - their biggest of the year usually run the second weekend of December - but more families are in dire straights due to the loss of jobs or reduction in hours. In recent weeks SVdP has sent out 6,000 envelopes to homes across the town and are asking people to give a generous donation to help raise the funds to fill the food hampers which will be distributed to their clients in need. The service - which has also felt the loss of revenue with their charity shop closed in both the first and second lockdown - will also help by providing food

vouchers, coal or oil to those who cannot afford it. "It's our toughest year," Breda told the Killarney Advertiser this week. "Our main aim is to help people who are in poverty. Our church gate collection, that's our biggest fundraiser of the year but that won't be going ahead this year. That's an awful lot of fundraising we won't have this year. Our funds are down substantially and we're making a special appeal to people to please support SVdP as the needs of people have increased." Volunteer Niall Keogh added that not only do they provide food and other provisions but can monitor those who
need additional services like mental health. However, due to COVID, calling in and just sitting and chatting to clients isn't possible this year. "We can't call and sit down and have a chat. We can't access their mental health needs." Anyone who needs support in any way should call 064 6634021 or 087 7718200. "They can leave a message and a volunteer will get back to them," he said. And the service is also seeking more volunteers, anyone who'd like to give a hand can contact them on the numbers above.
Donation a "Bolt" from the blue | By Sean Moriarty Killarney Valley Athletic Club, formally known as Killarney Micro Track, is celebrating this week after it was revealed that the world's fastest man and eight-time Olympic gold medallist Usain Bolt had made a €2,000 donation. The newly finished Killarney Valley AC Arena project has re-launched its GoFundMe page in an effort to offset loans accrued during the construction phase. “We still have a funding gap of over €100,000 from the construction of the track, so all help is needed so we can focus our energies in sport and activities and not be distracted by the worries of finance,” said Killarney Valley’s Brid Stack. As of last Friday, the total raised during the new phase stood at €2,220. Then Bolt made an €80 donation bringing the total to €3,000. Within moments, a second larger donation of €3,000, was made anonymously and this is believed to have also come from the 100m and 200m world record holder. Club coach Tomas Griffin is personal friends with Bolt’s manager Ricky Simms. Griffin contacted the Donegal man who promised to bring the fundraiser to the Jamaican’s attention. “After that we can’t confirm nor deny who made the donation,” Griffin told the Killarney Advertiser. “But it has amounted to another bit of publicity for our track here in Killarney." Further donations can be made via GoFundMe: Killarney Valley AC Arena.
| By Sean Moriarty Construction of the new cinema on Park Road is nearing completion and is expected to open early in the New Year according to the Ominplex Group. The new cinema will feature five separate auditoriums including one that can seat 300 people. One of these auditoriums will be state-ofthe-art – the screen will be same height as two double-decker buses and will feature electric reclining armchairs – a first for any cinema in Kerry. Internal fit out is almost complete and further external traffic management and road realignment work must take place before its official opening.
The new cinema is built on the site of the former Torc Great Southern Hotel and was the subject of a lengthy planning permission procedure between the Omniplex Group, Kerry County Council and An Bord Pleanála. “We don't have an opening date yet, however we normally have a soft opening for staff and management-training before we start our marketing campaigns,” Mark Anderson told the Killarney Advertiser. “We still have three or four weeks of work in the cinema and there is still some road alignment work to be completed.” The company is currently building new cinemas in Shannon, Roscommon, Tullamore and other locations.

Dangerous building on High St could come before the courts | By Sean Moriarty Kerry County Council could take legal action against the owners of a property on High St that has been deemed a dangerous structure by council engineers. Last month, the Council erected a steel frame in front of the premises to “safeguard the public using the street below” after declaring the building “a dangerous structure”. An engineer’s report, seen by the Killarney Advertiser, states that the High St building is in a dangerous state and includes structural damage to window, lintels and the stability of the building’s walls.
“This property is in extremely poor structural condition and is not fit for occupation,” the report said. “Failure of either or both floors would certainly further destabilise the front wall and main roof.” Apart from a statement issued last month, Kerry County Council did not comment further on the matter. “As this is the subject of ongoing action which may come before the courts, Kerry County Council will not be commenting further on this matter,” a council spokesperson told the Killarney Advertiser this week. There is also a long running dispute over the ownership of the building which has at least three reputed owners including a receiver acting on behalf of a previous owner.
AT LONG LAST: Yesterday (Thursday) Ronan Foley finally had his spinal operation after waiting almost three years.
"He'll have a lovely Christmas now" Ronan's operation finally goes ahead It took almost three years - but yesterday (Thursday) was a day the family of Ronan Foley will never forget - as the 15-yearold finally had his life-changing spinal operation. | By Michelle Crean Described as "the best Christmas present" they "could have ever asked for", Ronan's father Tony told the Killarney Advertiser that "it's a major relief" to now be on the other side and that it'll mean huge changes to Ronan's quality of life going forward. After waiting two years, eight months and 25 days in constant pain with his spine progressively getting worse until eventually it reached a 90 degree curve it was a long day for Ronan and his family as the operation began at 9am and lasted until the early evening. Tony and his wife Caroline Foley had fought hard publicaly for the last year to help get a surgery date for their son after it was cancelled on more than one occasion. "It will be his first pain free Christmas in
years," Tony said. "He's waiting nearly three years. We're delighted and it's a major relief, he was a long-time waiting."
A NEW START
The former St Oliver’s National School pupil can look forward to a new start back in school in 2021 and spending quality time with his friends once he has healed. "We're hoping he'll be home by next weekend but hopefully maybe sooner. The operation now means he will be able to sit up for as long as he wants without being in pain. He can go back to St Francis Special School. He had no quality of life at school or with his friends, for example he couldn't go to the cinema as he was in too much pain. He'd tire easily. He was always energetic and this was wearing him down. He'll have a lovely Christmas now as he'll be well on the road to recovery."
Killarney South Doc staff serve strike notice | By Sean Moriarty Killarney based call centre employees that manage the out of hours South Doc medical service are set to go on strike later this month. The call centre, which is located in Hillard’s Lane in Killarney town centre, matches patient and doctor requirements at the four South Doc clinics in the county. Both Tralee and Killarney offer a fulltime out of hours medical service while a reduced service is offered at both Dingle and Cahersiveen. The whole operation is managed by administration staff at the Killarney branch and they have served strike notice on
the HSE. “This action is necessary because of the failure of the HSE to restore pay reductions imposed on workers in Section 39 organisations in line with an agreement brokered at the Workplace Relations Commission in October 2018,” said SIPTU Public Administration and Community Division Organiser Adrian Kane in a statement. Killarney staff will down tools on December 18, three days after Cork-based South Doc staff do the same. Additional protests will take place outside the constituency offices of the Taoiseach, Micheál Martin, the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform, Michael McGrath and the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Simon Coveney.

Killarney choir will bring 'Ray of Hope' | By Michelle Crean A local choir plans to bring 'A Ray of Hope' to the people of Killarney and beyond later this month in St Mary's Cathedral.
CANCELLED: The annual Killarney Christmas Day Dip organised by Niki McCarthy has been cancelled this year but donations can be made online. Photo: Michelle Crean
Traditional Christmas day swim cancelled
Killarney International Choir will bring with them a feast of Christmas songs readings and reflections on Sunday, December 20 at 7.30pm. It will also be streamed live on Killarneyparish.com, and on Facebook live. Among the performers will be Grace Foley, Killarney Golf Club Choir, and the
Foley Sisters. "The theme for the night 'A Ray of Hope' I think says it all, what people have been through over the last year," Sheila Casey told the Killarney Advertiser. "It's a night of carols, hymns and reflections that people can relax and reflect. Thanks to Fr Kieran for all his help to make this night happen." There'll be free entry which is by ticket only. In line with COVID-19 regulations a limited amount of tickets will be available in the parish office and the Friary Shop. "A small donation is greatly appreciated for the night!"
For the past 11 years there's been a long standing tradition - the annual Killarney Christmas Day Dip - but unfortunately this year it's become a victim of COVID. | By Michelle Crean Organiser Niki McCarthy this week told the Killarney Advertiser that unfortunately this year it cannot go ahead at its location at Dundag Beach, "It is with sadness and disappointment that I have to announce that it is not possible to hold the annual Killarney Christmas Day Dip this year," Niki told the Killarney Advertiser. "Due to the COVID-19 restrictions we cannot organise any event with large gatherings and it would not be possible to maintain social distancing while attending the event at Dundag Beach." An impressive €55,000 has been raised for Aware over the years - but Niki has other plans and is instead looking for support online - as she doesn't want the charity to miss out on vital fundraising especially as they've already suffered
this year. "I feel so grateful to everyone who participated over the last 11 years. Thank you for all your support and generosity. This year Aware along with many other charities are struggling to raise much needed funds to help them to continue to provide valuable services. I have set up a fundraising page for people to donate to help support Aware in these difficult times. Any donations are greatly appreciated. We will really miss seeing everyone down at Dundag on Christmas morning. It has become a firm tradition for so many. Be assured we will make up for it on Chrstmas Day 2021. We hope you all have the best Christmas possible in these difficult times and hope that everyone stays healthy, happy and safe." You can donate to Niki's JustGiving page: Niki's No Dip Christmas Day Dip.

Killarney Municipal District officials and the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) have renewed calls advising the public to stay away from the Tomies Wood recreation facility until construction work is complete. The project has entered its final phases and the official opening will be announced in the coming weeks. Until then, the Council has re-doubled
its message to the general-public and has asked that people refrain from going there until ongoing works are complete. “Work is progressing well in relation to the site,” a Council official told the Killarney Advertiser. “We are calling on the public not to visit the site until the official opening." Cars parking on the road are causing significant problems for residents and the contractor accessing the site which is delaying completion of the project.

Mayor welcomes completion of new columbarium wall The recently completed columbarium wall at Killarney Burial Ground is now available for the placement of ashes and has been welcomed by the Cathaoirleach of the Killarney Municipal District, Cllr Brendan Cronin. The facility at the burial ground at Knockeendubh contains 100 niches for the placement of ashes. “I am pleased to see this vital infrastructure being completed and offering those who opt for cremation the opportunity to place urns containing ashes in an appropriate setting," he said. "The elected members of the Killarney Municipal District approved the Part VIII planning provisions for the burial ground. I would also like to acknowledge the support of former councillors, John Joe Culloty and John Sheahan in that regard. Significant work has been undertaken by our burial grounds staff in bringing this new provision within
the burial ground to fruition. This is, of course, a facility which is available to everyone in the county and was developed in recognition of the increased popularity of cremation in recent years. It is a beautiful setting and a very dignified and appropriate installation which provides that option to many bereaved families,." Councillors have recently agreed the policy and guidelines for the columbarium wall. Anyone wishing to use the new facility can contact the Burial Grounds Section of Kerry County Council.

Disappointment as new sculpture is damaged | By Michelle Crean The missing piece of a newly installed wooden sculpture in Killarney town which was snapped off by vandals over the weekend - has been found. The quill, which is part of the sculpture of the monk of Innisfallen on East Avenue Road was found early on Monday morning by a cleaner picking up rubbish outside the Outlet Centre. There was a great sense of disappointment at the news that it had been damaged, as well as the antlers on the deer sculpture on New Road. The East Avenue sculpture was a project by Kerry County Council and the Killarney Looking Good committee and only installed three weeks ago immediately
adjacent to the ANAM Arts Centre. "I was absolutely heartbroken to hear it," Yvonne Quill, Chair of Killarney Looking Good told the Killarney Advertiser. "It's not what it costs, it's what it represents. It's sad to think that somebody went out of their way to do that deliberately." Paul Sherry, Manager of the Killarney Outlet Centre, handed in the missing part to the town hall. "We don't know how repairable it is," Yvonne added. Cllr Michael Gleeson said that "it's a terrible reflection" of the people that did it. "I think the people that did this it's help that they need. To do that, to wantingly destroy them it's hard to understand."
Celtic Steps will celebrate a new lease of life by performing for the first time in 14 months tomorrow night (Saturday). The Irish dance and music spectacular will record a behind-closed-doors show at the INEC which will be broadcast on a yet to be announced date. It is the Killarney team’s first show after a long-running planning permission row came to an end this week. The show, popular with locals and visitors alike, was based at Killarney Racecourse for the last number of years but faced challenges over late night noise and crowds. However, the team behind Celtic Steps and Killarney Racecourse Company worked behind the scenes to overcome the issues. “Each and every remedial action required to comply with all the planning requirements was met along with the substantial financial cost. The result is a stunning theatre for our show – fully
sound-proofed, fully air conditioned with large bus and car parking facilities,” said a Celtic Steps statement issued this week. “The show, without doubt, would not be still running in Killarney without the foresight of Killarney Race Company. We appreciate the huge support from all our local residents, businesses and tourism interests.” Celtic Steps is already preparing for next season and Saturday’s INEC concert is a part of their 2021 plans. “Our main ethos has always been the nurturing and promotion of Irish traditional music, song and dance, we believe that our benefit to the economy, the creation of 55 jobs and our determination to promote both Killarney and County Kerry has only increased our resolve. Now is the time for us all to promote, produce and protect our amazing jewel, Killarney." Celtic Steps thanked The INEC Arena team and the Department of Tourism, Culture, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media for their efforts in getting Saturday night’s performance off the ground.

Taoiseach "not welcome" in some Killarney pubs | By Sean Moriarty Some local publicans fear they will not be allowed to open until after St Patrick’s weekend after what they describe as “an idiotic approach by the Government”.
LOYALTY: John Cronin has praised the loyalty of the people of Killarney during a rollercoaster 2020.
Killarney’s loyalty the key to surviving
The loyalty of Killarney people has helped one family-owned College St restaurant overcome the “rollercoaster" challenges of 2020. | By Sean Moriarty Cronin’s Restaurant was founded by current operator John Cronin’s grandmother Noreen Cronin in 1957 when she ran an eatery on Clovers Lane before his parents Pat and Sheila moved to nearby College St in 1977. The Cronin family are preparing to reopen their popular restaurant later today (Friday), after six weeks of Level 5 shutdown, but they are doing so with an air of confidence. For the last few weeks and during the first full lockdown Cronin’s offered a takeaway meal service to their local customers. “We are very confident,” John Cronin told the Killarney Advertiser. “Killarney people have been so good to us – they came out in their droves to support our takeaway service.” Today could be described as a soft opening as the Cronin family prepare to
do what Killarney does best – welcome visitors to the town – and with the intercounty travel restrictions set to be lifted on December 18 they are both ready and expecting a surge in business. “The lakes and mountains won’t be going anywhere so Killarney will always be attractive as a destination,” he added. That does not mean the future is without its challenges. Staff will, like every other hospitality sector worker, wear face masks while serving customers and while this move is necessary it removes facial expressions from the guest-welcoming experience. “We are in the hospitality business, not the hospital business and while face masks might hide a welcoming smile, it just means we have to take extra steps to make the guest feel welcome,” he said. “I have been here since 2016 and every year has been a rollercoaster, especially this one.”
Pubs that serve food will be allowed reopen from today (Friday), however, the so-called wet pubs are prevented from doing the same. Both the Licensed Vintners Association and Vintners Federation of Ireland carried out research into the Government’s decision to force wet pubs to remain closed.
FLAWS
The research document – seen by the Killarney Advertiser - reveals 14 different flaws in the Government’s thought process. These include evidence to suggest that wet pubs pose a greater risk than outlets serving food and that the Government did not take reopening of universities into account. The national findings have been echoed nationally with one Killarney pub owner saying he “would be slow enough in allowing Micheál Martin into my bar in the future". His comment comes after the Taoiseach told the Dáil earlier this week that there was “compelling evi-
dence that pubs were responsible for the spread of COVID-19”.
REFUTED
This evidence has been refuted by the two vintners associations and by Killarney publican John C O’Shea who is the local spokesperson for wet pubs. “This decision is based on what is a pub with a kitchen and one without a kitchen, it is not based on who is a responsible pub owner and who is not. Give us a chance, if someone breaks the rules – then shut them down,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “The rise in cases was at the same time the universities reopened. I feel embarrassed for the Government who are operating off these statistics.” He highlighted another rural issue that has not been acted upon during the Government’s decision-making process. “The closest someone from Rathmore can get to a pint and a burger is Killarney, 20kms away and this will encourage more people to travel further than they need to," he added. He was also angered by Martin’s comments in the Dáil when he said he likes "nothing better than going for a pint in a country pub". “He might find he won’t be welcome in these pubs,” added John. ”I will be very slow in leaving him in my door.”
"Great to see the lights on in town" says hotelier | By Sean Moriarty For Bernadette Randles, whose family is steeped in the hospitality and motor industry in Killarney, preparing for today's reopening was akin to re-starting a car that was idle for the winter. The reopening process started on Monday when some staff returned to work to heat the hotel and put up the all-important Christmas decorations. Festive flair aside, it gives an idea of the challenges all businesses face as they jump through the hoops of opening and closing. The Randles family “kept the lights on” for the month of November by offering takeaway meal services from its popular Kayne’s Bistro adjacent to their Muckross Road hotel. While the Dromhall Hotel will reopen to guests today (Friday), the sister premises the Randles Hotel next door will remain closed, "as it is just not viable”.
CHALLENGES
These are just a snapshot of the chal-
lenges facing hospitality businesses across the town. Killarney boasts 32 hotels but not all can continue spluttering back into life after weeks of being off the road. “We turned the heating on on Monday, you would be surprised how cold a building can get when the heating is off,” she told the Killarney Advertiser. Ever the optimist and realist, and despite the difficult times, Ms Randles is looking forward to reopening this morning. “We need to get people back into employment,” she told the Killarney Advertiser. She already has some restaurant bookings for this weekend, the second time she reopened her landmark premises this year. “We have a few families booked in for Confirmation and First Holy Communion meals,” she said, stressing that a maximum of six people are allowed. “I know we are a luxury but people deserve to celebrate their special occasions too. But it is great to see the lights on in town and see some life about."

Killarney top go-to destination for staycations As his two-year term as President of Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce draws to a close, businessman Paul Sherry said Brexit and COVID-19 provided an unfortunate backdrop to his tenure but he focused on ensuring that Chamber kept doing what it does best to keep the show on the road. Despite the major challenges, he said there were a number of key projects worked on during the pandemic that ensured Killarney’s great reputation was not only maintained but enhanced. “We have been engaged in the Wild Atlantic Gateway project with Fáilte Ireland, Kerry County Council, the National Parks and Wildlife Service, hoteliers and vintners and a host of other stakeholders in developing a plan to help further develop Killarney as a world class, sustainable tourist destination into the future,” Mr Sherry said.
“The plan is nearing completion and signoff by all stakeholders is expected prior to Christmas. This project has the potential to greatly improve Killarney’s standing and to remain the world class destination we know it to be,” the outgoing president said. Mr Sherry said joint campaigns with the Kerry Tourism Industry Federation and Fáilte Ireland were contributing factors to a very good summer season Killarney managed to salvage during the pandemic. “We were informed by Fáilte Ireland that the top two go-to destinations for

staycations following lockdown were Killarney and Galway,” he confirmed. Key projects undertaken in 2020 included the formation of the Kerry Tourism Industry Federation which has been a resounding success. Earlier in the year Killarney Chamber obtained a seat at the table of the Irish Tourism Industry Confederation, in association with its partners on the Kerry branch of the Irish Hotels’ Federation and Kerry Airport. With the onset of COVID-19 and the pandemic, the Chamber became involved with the Kerry Business and Economic Stakeholders Forum, set up by Kerry
County Council Chief Executive Moira Murrell, to address the challenges the pandemic was presenting for business and to plan for a recovery and exit from the crisis. Lobbying has become a very important part of the Chamber’s role in recent times and members have been consistently meeting with TDs, councillors and all the other groups on behalf of the town. The new President of Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce is Cllr Niall Kelleher, a Killarney businessman who is also an elected member of Kerry County Council for the Killarney Municipal District.
Sheahan’s named as Santa's official postal agent! FUN: Kilcummin National School pupils are taking part of the 'Christmas Together Campaign'.
Pupils plan to spread Christmas cheer
| By Michelle Crean Not only are they writing personal letters to the elderly but local school children are planning a socially distanced visit to spread Christmas cheer. Kilcummin NS pupils, who are part of the 'Christmas Together Campaign', organised by Garda Brendan O'Donovan, will design and write Christmas cards for each of the residents of Our Lady of Lourdes Nursing Home in Kilcummin. They then also plan to provide outdoor Christmas music on the grounds of the nursing home next Wednesday, at 11.30am. "We visit the residents each year, but unfortunately we are unable to enter the building this year, so we have decided that one bubble from school will visit the
grounds instead," Kilcummin NS principal Gilllian Sheehan said.
CHRISTMAS CONCERTS
"We have completed recording short virtual Christmas performances at school recently in well ventilated and sanitised rooms for very short periods of time to ensure that our families can enjoy some of our Christmas fun. Parents have been treated to short live virtual performances on Zoom also. We want to ensure that each of the boys and girls has something wonderful to look forward to each day at school. Our Parents’ Association Christmas Memory Tree will be lit on the grounds of Our Lady of Lourdes Church as part of our Christmas schedule. We are encouraging families to drop some Christmas gifts at the Killarney Garda Station as part of the 'Christmas Together' initiative."
You better watch out - well when you're on New St anyway - as something very special is happening in Sheahan’s Centra - as Santa has made them an official North Pole Postal Service (NPPS) agent for all Santa letters. The post office will be open each day from 8am to 9pm where you can bring your letter, copy of your email or Chimney post, have it stamped and receive an official receipt. Santa was worried this year with COVID restrictions about getting his post on time. He is delighted that Sheahan’s Centra were able to oblige with this free service for all the boys and
girls, and even to help out the mammies and daddies. As well as posting your letter and getting your official stamped receipt all for free, children and young at heart will be able to view the Santa tracking map and the Robin reporting systems. Any of you wondering how the Elf on the Shelf is coping, come and see their ingenious way of protecting both yourself and them. All letters will be collected by Reindeer Express Mail and delivered to the NPPS in the North Pole, overnight. There a diligent team of Elves are working 24-hour shifts sorting, filing and preparing all the letters for Santa to stamp with his seal of approval.

Killarney women create childcare podcast | By Michelle Crean Two Killarney women who are no strangers to chatting are using their skills to highlight topics which is sure to interest parents. Aoife Murphy (27) and her sister-in-law Jenny McCarthy (25), both Early Years professionals from Killarney recently set up podcast 'Little Steps, Big Futures: The Podcast' talking everything child related and it's proving very popular. The idea came in August when chatting one day about the changes in childcare and how there were no real resources out there for parents and guardians. They immediately decided to create an Instagram and Facebook account and it proved so popular they they soon put together podcasts covering a range of topics including biting, toilet training, screen time, attachments, childcare schemes available to single parents, wages, and men in childcare. "The Instagram was doing well and we had a wild idea to start a podcast then as we can expand on so much more on there," Aoife, who managed a Naionra in Killarney but after the lockdown in March moved to Washington DC, explained to the Killarney Advertiser.
"So in September we started the podcast with just myself and Jenny. We chatted about who we were and why we were here. Then we expanded and asked some guests to come on. We wanted to set up an informative and educational platform for educators, carers, parents and guardians as there was a gap in the market. We received lots of messages about the music therapy and the ASD preschool guests as many parents did not even know these resources existed. Helping spread awareness about the different channels available for children and families is so rewarding." Recently they had a guest called Megan Buckley Heelan who spoke about her sister Mia who has a very rare condition called Chromosome Deletion Syndrome 13q. "The response we got from that episode was unreal and because of that we have set up a fundraiser for CUH Children's Charity and BUMBLEance both picked by Mia and Megan's family as they are close to their hearts." On Wednesday they had a 'Raise Awareness Day" for this condition using the #wearpurplefor13Q. For more see their Instagram and Facebook page: 'Little Steps, Big Futures'.

Three-month riding ban for Murphy | By Sean Moriarty Champion jockey Oisin Murphy will serve a three-month ban after testing positive for cocaine use. Last July the Killarney jockey tested positive at a race meeting in France. At the time he denied any wrong doing and on Friday last week he presented counter evidence to Gallop France, the governing body of Horse Racing in that country. The Commissioners of Gallop France accepted that he did not take the drug after he was able to prove that the positive sample arose after an “unintentional environmental contamination”. He faced up to six months of a ban, however he will still have to serve half the sentence as the commissioners ruled that: “The rules relating to prohibited substances operate on a strict liability basis and he failed to avoid putting him-
self into a situation where environmental contamination could occur”. Following Friday’s hearing, Murphy issued a statement. “Whilst I am obviously disappointed that I will still have to serve a three-month ban, I am pleased the Commission accepted the evidence presented and I am hugely relieved to have been cleared of taking cocaine,” he said. “I respect the riles of France Gallop, respect their decision and will not be appealing. The next three months will give me much time to reflect on my actions, but I will learn from this experience and come back better and even more determined than before.” Murphy’s ban, from December 11 until March 11 next year will coincide with Flat Racing’s off-season which runs from October to May meaning he won’t miss too many races.
Earlier this week the club announced a coalition of 12 sponsors that have come on board to support Kerry cycling over the next three years. This latest sponsorship deal is part of the constantly evolving process by the club. Killarney Cycling Club was initially set up in the 1980s and focused on competitive road-cycling. It then played a key role in the development of the various mountain-biking disciplines in Ireland. The expanding section leisure – the single biggest section of the club – has further diversified the club’s membership and increased awareness of the club within the region. “Now in the middle of the pandemic crisis, the agreement of 12 businesses to continue sponsoring the club for three years from 2021 to 2023 is an endorsement of our standing and we, in turn, must reciprocate by re-doubling our
efforts to continue developing the club on the one hand, and by supporting local businesses on the other,” said Club Chairman Mark Murphy. “We know that multinational corporations which deal in online trading would not have sponsored us. We also know that, directly or indirectly, we are all part of the bigger club which is the wider Killarney region and it must be our priority to make this sustainable in every respect, from sporting to business and jobs.” The club’s sponsors for 2021-23 include Killarney Waste Disposal which is the main sponsor, plus 12 additional supporters: Ahern’s Garage Castleisland; Aqua Design, Killorglin; Autopoint Motor Group, Tralee; the Big Little Bike Shop, Killarney; Kayne’s Bar and Bistro; Killarney Coffee Roasters; Killarney Credit Union; Leane’s Kitchen’s and Bedrooms; REC-Renewable Energy Centre; the Ross Hotel, and the Killarney Park Hotel.

New superstore opens on Main Street One of Killarney’s best-loved clothes stores, Brian James Menswear, has relocated to a brand new and exceptionally spacious premises at 9-10 Main Street.
WINNER: William Loughnane was one of the winners of the Wild Postcard Project’s Art Competition celebrating Irish Biodiversity. Photo: Michelle Crean
Young artistic talent receives award Colourful Irish flowers, animals and insects formed a beautiful winning picture for one local boy. Seven-year-old William Loughnane, a pupil in Holy Cross Mercy, was thrilled when his creation 'The Puffin under the Rainbow' was one of 13 winning artworks in the Wild Postcard Project’s Art Competition celebrating Irish biodiversity. A very happy William took part in a virtual ceremony last Saturday and his work will be turned into a postcard to raise awareness of Irish biodiversity. The winners were celebrated in a virtual ceremony on Zoom which saw each winner “receiving” their award certificates and culminated in a confetti shower, orchestrated between the organisers and the parents, his mom Amélie Gangé explained.
Founded in 2016, the Wild Postcard Project aims to increase awareness of biodiversity through artwork competitions for kids and teens in locations across the world. The winning artworks are converted into postcards, allowing local biodiversity – as depicted by artistically inclined youth – to be shared to all corners of the globe. They are available through the Etsy website. Needless to say, William was delighted with his success! “I couldn’t believe I was one of the winners, I was so happy! I loved working on this picture, I wanted it to be very colourful," William told the Killarney Advertiser.
Brian James Menswear has moved from its former premises at 35 Main Street to the old O’Donoghue’s Medical Hall building across the street. The grand-opening took place on Tuesday after a massive relocation project that took place during the lockdown. “We started this mammoth project just six weeks ago and only for the huge effort put in by a team of talented local businesses, we would not have been able to bring it to completion so quickly,” Brian James told the Killarney Advertiser. “We have been overwhelmed by support from the local community and blown away by the well wishes we have received.” Brian James opened in 2006 and has brought the best of menswear to Killar-
ney for the last 14 years, having started in College Square, later moved to 35 Main Street. The latest chapter in the store’s success story is the opening of “this incredible superstore which has to be seen to be believed, such is the size, design and range on offer”. “The space which we have now has allowed us to bring in new brands, wider ranges and gives us the freedom to look at new concepts and collections. For now, we have added a limited range for women, with Superdry women having landed and we are expecting Calvin Klein women pre-Christmas, followed by Tommy Jeans and more for spring 2021,” added Brian. The shop is open seven days a week and customers can also shop online at www. brianjames.ie. Brian James is participating in the Killarney Advertiser’s ‘Shop Local #BigXmasGiveaway’.

The AGM had to take place virtually this year due to COVID restrictions, however that did not stop participants from engaging in the discussions and activities in a Zoom meeting. The Department of Children and Youth Affairs oversees Comhairle na nÓg, the delivery of which is the responsibility of each Local Authority. There are 31 Comhairlí na nÓg nationally and the aim is to ensure that the voice of young people is
heard when developing policy and local services. "Two of our students, Orianne McGillycuddy and Aoife McClarence are in their second year of being Comhairle members are were responsible for facilitating breakout groups and discussions during the AGM," teacher Carol O'Dowd said. St Mary's Church of Ireland at Kenmare Place was also lit up with a number of different lights. Cathaoirleach of the Killarney Municipal District Cllr Brendan Cronin, with Killarney Municipal District Manager Angela McAllen, and President of the Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce, Paul Sherry, at the virtual switching on of the Christmas lights in Killarney town on Sunday night.
Christmas season starts in Killarney!
After such a difficult year for so many - Killarney was lit up in all its glory - as the town's Christmas lights were officially turned on.
High St got a present this week and it looks stunning.
Christmas lights all lit up at Hannigans.
The much anticipated 2020 Christmas lights were ‘virtually’ switched on in Killarney by Cathaoirleach of Killarney Municipal District Councillor, Brendan Cronin, assisted by Killarney Municipal District Manager Angela McAllen and President of Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce, Paul Sherry on Sunday night. The country was still in Level 5, so the normal excitement of the Christmas in Killarney Magic Parade was confined to just a few people out walking who were just lucky to experience the magic even as the eerie fog descended in the town centre which definitely added to the atmosphere. Kerry County Council is delighted to share with those at home and those away - a short video of the lights and a very special message from Cathaoirleach Councillor Brendan Cronin. This year has taught us the importance of the outdoors and our public space and the Looking Good Committee have raised the bar in enhancing the public space with a number of Christmas light-
that contribute to making our town what it is. We can see their resilience when we walk the streets admiring the window displays and Christmas lighting. They have excelled themselves with their lights and creativity, all for you to enjoy as you wander through the town. We must not let our guard down over the Christmas period. We must ensure to continue to keep up the standards, maintain social distancing, keep washing our hands and practice cough etiquette. It is critically important to keep ourselves and our families safe. We must deliver compassion and empathy in spades to those around us. We must remember the more vulnerable in our community, those living alone and particularly those who have not seen family and friends in the last number of months. This has been an extremely difficult time for them and I am appealing to every one of you to make an extra effort to pick up the phone and make that contact to check in and say a friendly hello."
And last, but not least, he added that he was delighted to get confirmation from Santa that he has gotten the green light to fly. "The elves have been working extremely hard all year and like all of you it has been extremely difficult but the final preparations are underway. Everything is ready for Santa Claus to call to all the boys and girls on Christmas Eve. I know while many of you are missing the atmosphere and celebration of the turning on, I’m sure you will see them over the next weeks. We fully understand the sacrifices each person in our community has made this year and Kerry County Council, the Chamber of Tourism & Commerce and the Looking Good Committee have worked to add an extra sparkle to our town to give each and every one of you an extra bit of happiness and joy over the Christmas period. I want to wish everyone a happy, holy, peaceful and enjoyable Christmas and to stay safe.”
ing pieces. Light and colour play such an important part in lifting our mood these are sure to catch the eye as you walk around our town. “The turning on of the Christmas lights is always a very important night for all of us," Cathaoirleach, Councillor Brendan Cronin, said. "It is always a night enjoyed by each and every one of us as it welcomes in the Christmas season, and our town puts on a great spectacle at Christmas, but this year things are very different. It’s been a very challenging year for all of us. We’ve missed meeting friends and family and marking those important events in our own and our families lives, but we are getting through it together and there’s finally hope on the horizon with a vaccine and we will, with God's help persevere through this." This Christmas it is very important to remember to buy local and support local businesses, he added. "These are the businesses and their staff

Kerry Airport COVID tests now available at Bon Secours Hospital Kerry Airport Ireland and Bon Secours Hospital Tralee will provide COVID-19 tests for pre and post air travellers in and out of Kerry Airport this Christmas and into the New Year. The five-step online self-referral tests will be carried out at Bon Secours Hospital Tralee, not at Kerry Airport. The test can be taken by outbound passengers a few days before they fly and inbound passengers a few days after they arrive in the county and once they have complied with any isolation regulations that are in place at that time. The test costs €80 – the lowest in the country. The idea will overrule the need to get a doctor's referral before attending the drive-in clinic at the Tralee hospital. “It’s beyond comprehension that it has become such a difficult decision, whether to travel home or not. This is something that our diaspora would not give a second thought about any other year. But this is not any year and, so far, the advice from those who know is ‘don’t travel’ because the risks associated with COVID trans-

The swabbing clinic is in the staff car park of the Bon Secours Hospital Tralee. The entrance to the clinic is via the Matt Talbot Road. This is a drive through clinic and you will be asked to remain in your car. A payment of €80 for the test may be made online when making the referral or over the phone when the appointment is being confirmed.

mission are too high,” the Chief Executive of Kerry Airport Ireland, John Mulhern, said. “Most will sacrifice the trip this time for the greater good, but for some there are people very special to them who live alone or have lost all their social outlets this year. Many are feeling depressed or at least a little sad and need company. These visits home are essential to their health and well-being and we must make them possible, but safe.” There are currently two daily return flights between Kerry Airport and Dublin
with Aer Lingus Regional while Ryanair are due to resume their services to London (Luton and Stansted) in mid-December. Passengers who wish to undergo a COVID test can visit www.bonsecours.ie/ bst_selfreferralform. Once the referral form has been completed, the Laboratory Department at Bon Secours Hospital Tralee will confirm the appointment date and time via email. The routine hours for the swabbing clinic are daily between 8.15am to 10am, Monday to Saturday,
Meanwhile, Kerry Airport is in line to get €1.5 million in funding as part of the annual Government funded Regional Airport's Programme. The funding, which will go towards enhancing safety operations at the airport such as air traffic control, fire services and security, is an increase in the €200,000 awarded last year. It is also in addition to the €1.17 granted in July for capital investment and the €6m COVID-19 operational support funding, announced last month and that will be shared with Donegal and Knock Airports. “Kerry Airport is enormously important both to the infrastructure and economy of County Kerry and the Southwest. This funding, coupled with the financial supports provided in the budget in October and early November will go some way towards helping Kerry Airport remain financially sustainable as it plans for a time beyond COVID-19,” Kerry TD and Minister for Education Norma Foley said.

Hoteliers praise the forgotten heroes of the pandemic | By Sean Moriarty Bernadette Randles, chair of the Kerry branch of the Irish Hotel Federation has praised the forgotten heroes of the pandemic. As well as frontline public health teams, fire and rescue crews, Gardai just to mention a few of the very many public sector workers who have worked in very difficult circumstances over the last few months, she has also praised the efforts and resilience of other people that are largely forgotten. She praised the trojan work of Killarney Municipal District staff who have kept the town looking great since the
start of pandemic-related restrictions in March. “Despite a lack of income the town council has done a marvellous job,” she told the Killarney Advertiser. Ms Randles is a long-time advocate for staff who work in the hospitality industry but says all the other trades affected directly or indirectly have suffered too and they cannot be forgotten. “Look at musicians who entertain us, they have had no work since March,” she said, “Taxi drivers, hotel suppliers, even the jaunting cars, again to name just a small few of the very large groups of people, they have all been brilliant in the support they offer and the way they all came together to get through this.”
Kerry Convention Bureau looking ahead to better times Kerry Convention Bureau (KCB) is looking ahead to better times for all their members in 2021, following an exceptionally challenging year, which saw dramatic collapse of the MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Events) business tourism and wider hospitality sector, due to the global pandemic. As they bid a close to 2020, KCB believes there is great reason to be hopeful for 2021. “We are working closely with our members to look forward and focus on new solutions and innovative ways to safely bring visitors to Kerry, both in person and virtually," KCB Manager, Becky Hargrove, said. Amongst the new solutions being implemented is the ability for venues to hold hybrid events, providing an interim solution for the MICE sector, while domestic and international travel and meetings continues to be restricted. The bureau and their members are also focusing on creating digital content, which can be used to showcase what the region has to offer to event planners, when it is safe to meet again, including its wide open spaces, immersive, nature based activities and world class accommodation and

meeting facilities. There is also some much-needed respite for their members, as KCB look forward to hosting their 'Very Kerry Christmas Event' on December 8 in conjunction with Fáilte Ireland and Orangeworks and will be a mixture of socialising and fun online for their 45 participants. In the spirit of giving, participants are also being encouraged to make donations to the Kerry branch of St Vincent de Paul.

Pupils from Second and Third class in Scoil Bhríde, Loreto National School were busy during the week writing letters to some of the residents of St Columbanus Community Hospital, Killarney. The class, led by their teacher Pádraig O’Sullivan acknowledged the effect that the COVID-19 restrictions were having on the residents and decided that this would be a nice way for a little bit of happiness to be brought to their day. Some 32 letters along with questionnaires based on school long ago, made their way to the community hospital where they were kept in quarantine for a number of days, school principal Brian
O'Sullivan told the Killarney Advertiser. "They were then distributed to some of the residents who were thrilled to receive them. The questionnaires will form part of a history project and will be enclosed in a time capsule to be opened on Christmas week 2050! The boys and girls were delighted to be involved in this lovely project and they really benefited from the development of their letter writing skills." All other classes in the school are also working hard to create beautiful pieces of Christmas art and producing a musical performance which can be viewed by the residents online, he added. "These will be gifted to the residents and staff in the coming week. A huge thanks to all the staff in St Columbanus Community Hospital for making this project possible. The school will also be taking part in the Christmas Together Campaign led by local Gardaí. A no uniform day was held today (Friday) and all money raised will be used to buy Christmas gifts for the residents of local nursing homes."

Active Connections is growing in Kerry This winter's top transfer story sees Mike Melia and Caroline Poff transfer to Kerry to supply Active Connections services in the Kingdom for Tusla.
CONNECTING: Mike Melia and Caroline Poff are transferring home to Kerry to supply Active Connections services in the Kingdom for Tusla.
Mike and Caroline were transferred from Wexford back to their home county of Kerry, and both will bring their expertise and local knowledge to support young people in need and help transform their lives through adventure. The Active Connections New Trails programme is an activity-based intervention service which supports the participants and their families. It uses a range of adventure activities in combination with Brief Solution Focused Coaching to help participants identify and action their solutions to their difficulties. New Trails helps youths, teens and young
adults connect their desire for more freedom and independence with the reality that they must take on the responsibility that comes with that freedom. The aim is to instil confidence, strength, new perspectives and skills for dealing with the transition to adulthood. Mike and Caroline have years of outdoor experience from Whitewater kayaking in Bosnia and Herzegovina to rock climbing in Paklenica National Park. Both completed an outdoor instructor traineeship in Kerry which gave them the hard skills necessary for Active Connections. Mike has worked with Active Connec-
tions for almost two years and Caroline has been a member of the team for one year. To learn more about the team and the transformative work they do check out the website www.activeconnections.ie. “I'm looking forward and relishing the possibilities of new adventure while aiming to assist in the transformation of lives through adventure in my home county,” Mike Melia said. “It is exciting being back in Kerry surrounded by powerful rivers, mystical forests and dominating mountains. The more high tech we become, the more connection with nature we need. Helping young people discover this connection and transformative power of nature is incredible,” Caroline added.
Sliabh Luachra Journal is ready to be read How several IRA men managed to escape from thousands of British troops carrying out a major search of the “wild country’’ just east of Killarney, during the War of Independence, is recalled in the 19th issue of the Sliabh Luachra Journal, just published. In an article titled, 'The Big Round-Up', Jeremiah O’Leary recalls the manhunt, in early June 1921. It was focussed on the Clydagh valley, Glenflesk, and estimates of numbers of troops involved ranged from 2,000 to 10,000. As troops converging on Clydagh from Killarney and many barracks in Co Cork formed a ring of steel, the IRA was concerned as many of its members were trapped in the area being swept. “But’’, O’Leary notes, “all made good their escape because they were familiar with the terrain and had ample warning of where the enemy was.’’ And they also had cover and support from local people. When troops entered
houses, they found all the men had gone. On being asked where the men were, the usual response from women was: “They’ve gone to the bog'’. Leading one British officer to retort: “You must have a hell of a large peat mine around here!’’ In a separate article on the War of Independence, O’Leary says 1921 was the most active year in the north Cork/east Kerry area, with ambushes in places like Tureengarrive, Rathmore and Headford. The journal has three articles to mark the centenary of the war.
TRADITIONAL MUSIC
Winning the senior fiddle competition at Scartaglen Feile Cheoil, in 1968, was the beginning of close ties with the traditional music of Sliabh Luachra for Matt Cranitch. Now regarded as a foremost authority on the music of the region, especially that of the renowned fiddle master, Padraig O’Keeffe, he is also a leading musician on the national scene.
On the day Matt won the fiddle competition in Scartaglen, Jackie Daly won the senior accordion competition. “Little did we realise at the time that, many years later, we would go on to form a music partnership which, indeed, would bring us back to Scartaglen many times,’’ he recalls in the journal on page 12. A native of Rathduff, Co Cork, Cranitch went on to win All-Ireland Fleadh Cheoil titles and numerous other awards and has performed widely at home and abroad. He also received a PhD from the University of Limerick for his study of the fiddle-playing of Sliabh Luachra. The 112-page journal, which is sent to exiles in many parts of the world, is published by the local history society, Cumann Luachra. It contains a wide range of articles covering the life and lore of historic Sliabh Luachra and is on sale in shops throughout the area as well as in Killarney and surrounding towns.

The screenplay was written by Fincher's father, Jack Fincher, prior to his death in 2003. Milly, Aubrey, and Jonah Story are cousins, but they barely know each another, and they've never even met their grandmother. Rich and reclusive, she disinherited their parents before they were born. So when they each receive a letter inviting them to work at her island resort for the summer, they're surprised . . . and curious. Their parents are all clear on one point - not going is not an option. This could be the opportunity to get back into grandmother's good graces. But when the cousins arrive on the island, it's immediately clear that she has different plans for them. And the longer they stay, the more they realise how mysterious - and dark - their family's past is. The entire Story family has secrets. Whatever pulled them apart years ago isn't over - and this summer, the cousins will learn everything. Karen M. McManus earned her BA in English from the College of the Holy
Cross and her MA in journalism from Northeastern University. She is the number one New York Times bestselling author of 'One of Us Is Lying', 'Two Can Keep a Secret', and 'One of Us Is Next'.

The pieces on this record are drawn from Úna's two previous albums - 'In the Deep' (2019) and 'As I Wake, Still I Dream' (2017), but also include new work and in-the-flow improv. Track two, 'Hollow' sees Úna and Stephen collaborate for the first time. HEALTH & FITNESS Shopping local has Advice - By Brian Foley Brian is available for advice and fitness consultations, Call 087 403 0894 or email info@activate.ie • www.activate.ie
One bad meal doesn’t make you unhealthy Health is not a priority - it is a value. It is not something however that can be sold and peddled as something external to who you are. It is important to understand your outer is an expression of your inner - not the other way around. Love yourself first and foremost. Whatever version of yourself that is, it doesn’t matter, you need to love yourself. Throw away all the oppressive imagery and rubbish from so-called “health and fitness” magazines and supposed topless gurus. If you start to understand the power and beauty of your own body then you’ll start to nourish it, not “diet”. You won’t exercise to punish yourself for the pizza and beers you had on Friday night, you’ll do it because it positively impacts everything else in your life. That one hour of exercise in the gym, in the park or at home in the garage should make the other 23 hours in your day better. So many of us view the gym as some form of self-flagellation for the awful sins we’ve committed, a place where we must go to knock the insecurities out of ourselves. Please, please, please stop thinking this way. One bad meal doesn’t make you unhealthy the same way one healthy meal won’t make you healthy. Stop looking for a silver bullet - it doesn’t exist. Nowadays it seems we are all looking for that instant gratification without realising that it is the journey, not the
product which makes you. Yes, that is a corny, well-worn line, but it is absolutely the truth. No shake, pill or ridiculous machine off of TV shopping is going to make you fit and healthy. Don’t buy that rubbish and feed the ugly beast that is living off these insecurities. We love Instagram, but it houses some of the biggest problems here. Transformation photos and those “impromptu” beach snaps are inspirational for sure, but none of it sits comfortably. What do these pictures actually say? Much like the utopia that exists with looking through the lens of social media, we don’t get any sense of what’s real. A favourite comedian of mine, David O’Doherty, recently proposed that to pay penance for all the #bliss #blessed and #mylifeisamazing posts we put on Facebook etc., we should take a photo of our own fecal matter once a month to balance the perspective! Maybe a bit extreme, but social media can be really misleading so don’t take everything you see on there at face value. Lately, I’ve noticed even more “before and after” transformation pics online, again, these can be a hugely motivating and a positive thing, but often you will see something written beneath claiming: “making improvements, but still want more definition” etc. Rarely do you see someone write: “I think I look better on the outside, but on the inside I feel a million times better, I’m happier in my own skin, I don’t get down on myself over trivial things and I’m better able to live my life doing stuff like playing with the kids, or going for a walk and a coffee with a good friend”. The number on the scales or the ‘points’ you’ve consumed today is not going to make you happy tomorrow. Playing a game of football with your kids or taking a bike ride around a beautiful park will. These are the things that really matter, everything else is really just the by-product. We need to listen to our bodies and stop watching everyone else’s. At Activate, we do things differently and look at health and fitness differently. We love what we do, we love seeing people achieve and recognise their own beauty, their own best version of themselves. So be you, love you and learn to live in your own skin.

never been so important Shoppers are being asked to "think green and gold" this Christmas to support local businesses and aid the recovery of the local economy. Kerry County Council and Kerry Chambers have joined forces to appeal to everyone countywide to support local shops and businesses in the coming weeks and months and are encouraging people to use a new online directory of Kerry businesses and services on shopkerry.ie. The new online portal provides details of hundreds of Kerry shops which are open or providing online or delivery services. Businesses are being encouraged to sign up and register for inclusion on the online directory. The Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr Patrick Connor Scarteen appealed for solidarity with local shops and businesses this Christmas. "At the heart of every community in Kerry are local business owners who have endured enormous challenges during 2020. Because of the pandemic, they have been pushed to the brink, but they have innovated, evolved and adapted what they do, and how they do it, to survive. Now they depend on us, the people of Kerry, to support them as much as we can by spending what we can locally," he said. "As consumers this Christmas, we must show solidarity with local shops and services which employ our relatives, our neighbours and our friends. Every Euro spent in Kerry helps to protect those jobs and support the local economy."
On behalf of the Kerry Chambers, Ken Tobin CE of Tralee Chamber added that "our towns are safe, open longer, glowing with Christmas lights and full of atmosphere for Christmas". "Over the past number of weeks, we’ve stayed connected with customers online and with takeaway services, and while online is here to stay, you can’t beat the experience of shopping on the run in to Christmas. We are now entering a time where we also want to see customers coming back into our town centres and supporting all our local businesses in Kerry. "Whether you want to shop in person, have someone shop for you or shop local online, all we ask is that you add a bit of green and gold to your shopping cart this Christmas and shop in Kerry." Businesses or services wishing to be included in the online directory can register on shopkerry.ie. There is no fee for registering.

GARDEN MAGIC
Gardening - By Debby Looney
Debby is available for advice and garden consultations, just call 086 6088156 or email barnhillky@gmail.com
A nice addition to your gardening library Last week I wrote about books, and to my great surprise I received a lot of feedback – and it seems I missed many categories! So this week I would like to address the gaps. There are many gardening books for children. One of my favourites is ‘Gardening with Emma’ by Emma Biggs, a very young gardener who has written this book with her dad Steven. She is an avid gardener, and this really shines through in the book. Excellent step by step projects and information, Emma explores the weird and wonderful in a way which is relatable to younger readers, and the illustrations are colourful and fun. In short, this book will inspire children between the ages of eight and 14. ‘Let’s Get Gardening’, published by the RHS is another good book choice for young beginners. Regardless of the size of the garden, it covers veg growing, plant needs, how to attract pollinators and insects and it has some interesting recycling advice. It is a very holistic approach to gardening, giving the young person a great grounding in all things gardening. ‘The Book of Brilliant Bugs’ by Jess French is all about creepy crawlies and how important they are for our planet. It is easily accessible for readers aged five and upwards - what better time in life to understand the complexities of nature? The beautiful illustrations in this book will encourage children to look at insects in a whole new light, I have seen fear and “yuk!” change to wonder thanks to this book!
REFERENCE GUIDE
Another category I missed was herbs. My own go-to reference guide is ‘A Pocketful
of Herbs – an A to Z’ by Jekka McVicar. It is a superb little reference book, crammed full of pertinent information. Then, for the pure pleasure of the illustrations, I heartily recommend ‘The Kew Gardener’s Guide to Growing Herbs’, which, apart from its beauty, is a clear guide to growing, using and harvesting all herbs. When it comes to trees, there are many books I love, but one of the most fascinating reads is ‘The Hidden Life of Trees - What They Feel, How They Communicate’ by Peter Wohlleben. It contains beautiful illustrations, but, more importantly, tells of the importance of the forest in a captivating way. The interaction between trees and their ecosystems is one we are not always aware of, but you will definitely see our own forests in a new light after reading this book. This book has a companion book, ‘The Hidden Life of Trees, A Visual Celebration of a Magnificent World’ which has excerpts of the original text, accompanied by stunning photography. These are books which go beyond our own garden. Finally, last week I neglected our own wildlife, and remedy that by recommending ‘Ireland’s Wild Plants, Myths, Legends and Folklore’ by Niall Mac Coitir. This is a must have for anyone interested in our own history and folklore, sorting through wild plants by season, as our ancestors might have. It is illustrated by the wonderful Grania Langrishe, and is a visual treat. Incidentally, this author has also published ‘Ireland’s Birds’ and ‘Ireland’s Animals’, and as a collection they are a really nice addition to anyone’s library!
Bertie the Bear gives back this Christmas This Christmas, The Europe Hotel & Resort is giving back by supporting a children's charity. Gay, Bi+ and Trans men’s services launched in Kerry The Gay Project has this week announced a suite of online services that will be available to people in Kerry for the duration of COVID-19 restrictions.
BENEFITS: A new report has found significant benefits in innovative Kerry Stroke Day Service.
Innovative Kerry stroke programme has significant benefits A new report has highlighted the positive impact of an innovative stroke day programme available across Kerry. The Kerry Stroke Day Service began as a pilot project involving a collaboration between the HSE and two voluntary day centres. It provides physical and mental stimulation for people who have experienced a stroke through an eight to 10 week programme, and it also offers support to carers. Although COVID-19 has impacted on the delivery of the service, adapted programmes have continued online and individual face-to-face sessions have resumed in recent weeks. Now, Cork Kerry Community Healthcare and Kerry Stroke Support Group, working in collaboration with Ard Churam Day Centre, Baile Mhuire Day Centre and IT Tralee, are pleased to announce the publication of the Stroke Day Service Evaluation Report. The report found that people who took part in the programme benefited from significant improvements in their balance, walking speed and mobility. There was also a measurable and significant improvement in participants’ perception of their quality of life, as well as an increase in their satisfaction with
their health. Participants also enjoyed an improvement in their mental well-being. The report also found that there were benefits for carers of the people involved in the programme.
SERVICE
The Stroke Day Service was set up in 2018 in response to a need identified by the Kerry Stroke Support Group and is supported by Cork Kerry Community Healthcare Community Work Department. It offers a mixture of physical activity, socialisation and mental stimulation in the existing day centre settings. A multidisciplinary team in each of the two centres consisting of a physiotherapist, nurse manager, exercise facilitator, health care attendants and volunteers manage the programmes that run one day a week for eight to 10 weeks at a time. The evaluation of the programme was facilitated by IT Tralee and it looked at the experience of 53 participants from seven programmes. “It has given people a new lease of life knowing they have a place to come to where they can be supported both physically and mentally," Mary Carmody, Chairperson of the Kerry Stroke Support Group, said.
These include a range of online social groups for men, a book club, a writers' club, coffee social groups, seminars and online classes and a Facebook group called Munster Gayze. These services offer a much needed social outlet for GBT+ men in Kerry to socialise with their peers during ongoing COVID-19 restrictions. “We know that these services can help combat isolation for folks who might be finding the added isolation of COVID-19 challenging,” Community Development Worker with the Gay Project, Michael O'Donnell, said. “Our services offer a digital space where GBT+ men in Kerry can be out, and proud of who they are. We’ve found that this is especially relevant for older men."
Polio survivors in the South West urged to sign up Most people think of polio as long gone. While thankfully, with every child now vaccinated, this debilitating disease is eradicated in Ireland, however it is thought that around 7,000 people who had polio are still living with the impact of the original illness. Polio Survivors Ireland is urging polio survivors to sign up to the Polio Register, to help find out how many are still here and to create strength in numbers. “We are looking for people who contracted polio as babies or young children, to sign up to our National Polio Register, which is currently rolling out in Kerry, Limerick, Clare and North Tipperary,” Fran Brennan, CEO, Polio Survivors Ireland, said. “With more evidence of the need for tailored supports and services for polio survivors, we can advocate and campaign for what is needed now and in the future.”

GET INVOLVED
The Gay Project is a National NGO that supports, celebrates and advocates for Gay, Bi+, Trans and Queer Men. There are four main pillars to their work which include running events and social groups, campaigning for LGBT+ human rights and policy protections, providing information and resources to GBT+ men and their families, and delivering workshops and talks. Ailsa Spindler, the co-ordinator of the Gay Project, added "like everyone, we’ve recently been adapting our services to COVID-19 restrictions and this has enabled us to reach more people than ever." It’s very easy to get involved. These services are completely free to attend. Confidentiality is assured from all staff delivering the service. The groups are facilitated online so people from any part of Kerry can attend. These services are available immediately. Before it was eradicated in the early 1960s, Polio struck down many people in Ireland. The current pandemic brings back many memories for those who recall the widespread fear and panic of their childhood. During the polio epidemics in the '40s and '50s, parents were urged to avoid crowded places and excessive exercise for their children and swimming pools and libraries were closed in an effort to curb this terrible
disease that struck mostly babies and children. Of those who contracted the disease, many were partially and some completely paralysed for life. Decades after, many survivors are now experiencing new symptoms, known as Late Effects of Polio or Post-Polio Syndrome, which often require medical advice and treatment.
STRONGER VOICE
The Polio Register was set up by Polio Survivors Ireland, the only support organisation for survivors in Ireland, to help create a clearer picture of the number of people affected. This will help the charity to advise statutory services of the supports needed for survivors. Anyone who had polio, whether they require support now or not, should register to give a stronger voice to all polio survivors in Ireland. Late Effects of Polio and Post Polio Syndrome can cause previously active survivors to lose mobility and to struggle with daily tasks, fatigue, pain, or to develop an extreme intolerance to cold. To sign up to the register, see www.polio.ie or contact Polio Survivors Ireland on 01 889 8920, email info@ppsg.ie.

Sewells Pharmacy now live online Sewells Pharmacy are now online for the very first time - making their wide range of products even easier to order!
After months of hard work and dedication, they are delighted to officially announce the launch of www.sewellspharmacy.ie. "COVID-19 has made us re-assess how well we are serving our loyal customers and in response to the recent pandemic we feel it is more important than ever that our over-the-counter products be made available for ordering online, and click and collect from December 12," Ian Trant from Sewells told the Killarney Advertiser. SOLD: A Kerry castle in Kenmare Bay has sold for almost €4.5m.
Savills confirm sale of luxurious Kerry castle A luxurious Kerry castle has sold for almost €4.5m and represents one of the largest country residential property sales in Ireland this year. An Culu – a luxurious castle property situated on the edge of Kenmare Bay sold for a price close to the asking figure of €4.5m. An Culu – a former ‘tea folly’ house – sits on 4.5-acres of land overlooking the stunning setting of Kenmare Bay and was meticulously renovated late '90s after it was purchased by UK entrepreneur and business man, Kevin Reardan. The 9,000 sq. ft. property is located amongst vast Coillte forest lands and
has been often described as one of Ireland’s best kept secrets due to its hidden nature – a feature that attracted its new owner. The sale was handled by Savills Cork office in conjunction with its Country Homes division, and negotiated by Catherine McAuliffe, Director and her colleague Michael O’Donovan, Associate. “This was definitely one of the most unique properties we have had the pleasure of selling,” Catherine, describing the property as “a truly magnificent
home in the most private and tranquil setting”, said.
EXPERIENCE Most definitely not your typical fairytale castle, An Culu was designed and decorated to ensure its residents have a full authentic castle experience. In other words, to believe that it existed in a long forgotten era with its moat, drawbridge, castellated entrance, stained glass windows and cut stone staircase which serves all five storeys to include a top floor living room with domed frescoed ceiling and magnificent terrace to inhale the amazing views over Kenmare bay with the Caha mountain backdrop.
Modern luxuries such as a leisure basement with heated swimming pool, steam room and sauna, a lift serving all floors, full Bose sound system throughout and an extensive gas fired central heating system all remind you of its actual age. The extensive use of material in silk padded walls, bed canopies and sumptuous drapes and curtains certainly portray the historic theme to the building, together with extensive use of cut stone fireplaces and oak and cherrywood panelling and carpentry throughout. The octangular conservatory has superb views of the bay and over the purpose built harbour with deep water quay and floating marina. The outgoing custodians certainly had an excellent eye for detail and their wide-ranging knowledge of building and construction is evident throughout this project. The lucky new owner plans to spend a large part of the year at An Culu where he plans to entertain overseas guests and business associates as well as being able to appreciate some down time in this luxurious haven.
Offical launch of Storied Kerry website A website which has a feast of stories from all over Kerry is to be officially launched next week. Storied Kerry, www.storiedkerry.com, was set up to entertain and stimulate in these difficult times. And since last March the site has published stories every Tuesday and Thursday from the eight districts, and include a mixture of legend, landscape, plants, animals, archaeology, history, folklore, with some contemporary work. “Setting up the Storied Kerry website was our big step forward this year," Storied
Kerry Chairman Frank Lewis explained. “This was to make all of us know more of our Kerry story and in this way enrich and enhance all of our lives, bonding us more closely to our own place, encouraging us to look at the potentials of our place and play our part in developing it, sharpening our awareness of the problems and committing to solving them.” The ambition was to encourage all of us to research a Kerry story that interested us, he explained. "Storied Kerry directors from each of the county's eight districts encouraged all of
us to research and present our Kerry story and publish all of these on www.storiedkerry.com. Now, after 10 months, it is time to officially launch the website. This is taking the place of the day long conference we ran around Hallowe'en in 2018 and 2019 in St Oliver's National School." The 45 minute official launch will take place at the Institue of Technology in Tralee (ITT) and will be live on the website and on the Storied Kerry Facebook page at 4pm on Tuesday next, December 8. On Saturday December 12 it will be repeated with comments from viewers.
The technical preparation and presentation of the launch is being done by Phillip Doyle and his students from the Creative Writing and Technical Department of the ITT, which on January 1 becomes part of the Munster Technological University. "My students and I are delighted to assist in the official launch of the website. This live-streamed broadcast will help bring the Kerry story to a global audience,” Phillip said. “We hope to continue our collaborations with Storied Kerry as we transition into our university status, with increased benefits for all involved."

Twitter paves the way for new president Donald Trump’s last stand as President of the United States of America has officially entered its final days but there are no signs yet that he is willing to concede to incumbent Joe Biden. On Monday, December 14, the Electoral College will meet to formally declare the results of the
2020 US election. Until then, anything is possible; several last ditch legal attempts are on-going to reverse the result. Will he leave peacefully or will he have to be forced out? But one of Trump’s main avenues of communication will be closed. Twitter has announced that it will transfer ownership of the official @POTUS account to Joe Biden on
Electronic signs saying "Do not let moose lick your car!" have been erected in various places in Jasper, Alberta, as the hungry animals have taken a liking to licking cars. The large animals, common in the area, have discovered that salt used on the roads in winter - used to melt snow and ice - splashes onto cars as they drive through, and they like it. "They're obsessed with salt, it's one of the things they need for the minerals in their body," Jasper National Park spokesman Steve Young told CNN. The fear is that if the moose keep treating cars as lollipops, they may no longer see vehicles as dangerous, leading to more accidents. If a moose approaches, officials recommend just driving away and, in any case, not getting out of the car.
January 20, the day the new president is due to take office. A Twitter spokesperson said that representatives would meet with Biden’s transition team to sort out the details of the transfer, which requires no sharing of information from the Trump administration. The POTUS handle is described as an official US Government account and has 33 million followers. However, Trump owns the @realDonaldTrump account which has over 88 million followers and this is his favoured tool of mass communication.

Connect with loved ones abroad this Christmas A new initiative to further connect with the global diaspora this December - 'To Be Irish at Christmas' was launched this week by the Department of Foreign Affairs.
SAFEVET: Dr. Ailís Ní Riain (Deputy President of The Veterinary Council of Ireland), Joe Moffitt (President of the Veterinary Council of Ireland), and Niamh Muldoon (CEO and Registrar of The Veterinary Council of Ireland), launching The SAFEVET SMART handbook.
Veterinary Council launches mental health and well-being resource The Veterinary Council of Ireland, the independent statutory body responsible for the regulation of the practise of veterinary medicine and veterinary nursing, has launched a new SAFEVET SMART handbook. Its author, Dr Margaret O’Rourke is a Clinical Psychologist and Director of Behavioural Science at the School of Medicine, University College Cork. The SAFEVET SMART handbook is an evidence based practical guide to managing stress and building resilience for members of the veterinary professions. “Mental health is an often overlooked area, and one which all veterinary professionals should be conscious of on an ongoing basis," Dr Margaret O’Rourke, said. "Long hours, complex cases, heavy workloads, paperwork, demanding owners, litigation risk, poor career advancement, and financial challenges are
just some of the stressors faced in practice. I would encourage all veterinary professionals to work to maintain their mental health, in order to properly ensure their own happiness and comfort, and that of the animals they care for.” The SAFEVET SMART handbook provides expert mental health advice relevant to veterinary professionals throughout every stage of their careers with proven tips and practical advice to help establish good habits, maintain a healthy mind and body, as well as financial advice, alongside strategies for managing conflict and difficult people. The Veterinary Council is currently conducting research among its registrants in the area of mental health in the veterinary professions, to gain a better understanding of the topic and to help establish what can be done to support veterinary practitioners and veterinary nurses, and will provide registrants with a link to the survey in due course.
A platform to share and swap your own special memories of Irish Christmases, it will also celebrate many of the things we love about being Irish through an online programme of Irish music, culture, performances, community engagement and collective spirit from home and abroad. “Christmas 2020 will be different in many ways but no matter where we are in the world, it will be a time when we think of those we love the most," Minister Colm Brophy said. "I am looking forward to the 'To Be Irish at Christmas' initiative which will help the Irish all over the world con-
nect with each other. I hope that many people will take part by submitting their songs, stories, memories or hopes for the year ahead.” The exciting programme of events will run from December 21 to the 31. Everyone is invited to take part and www.tobeirish.ie has more information on how to get involved. The initiative is also looking for short (30-60 seconds) video submissions from families, friends, and individuals around the world.
The need for seed! Responding to the need for seed, the Irish Seed Savers Association have launched the Community Seed Guardian Programme. Communities across Ireland are being encouraged to grow and save their own seed together with The Community Seed Guardians Programme, a training and mentoring programme for communities across Ireland to grow and save their own food seed. It was developed with funding received through Rethink Ireland’s Innovate Together programme, established in response to COVID-19 to build resilience in communities. With growing awareness of climate change and fear of limitations in our food supply which were highlighted during the COVID-19 crisis, the programme will work with established community gardening groups to reduce Ireland’s reliance on imported food and food seed. “We are excited to be given this support by Rethink Ireland, bringing the experi-
ence we have built over 30 years to the wider community across the island,” Jennifer McConnell, General Manager, of Irish Seed Savers, said. “COVID-19 and Brexit has also raised awareness about the threat to our food seed supply, so we are delighted to share our skills with communities, to help them build their own seed supply for longterm food resilience.” Irish Seed Savers will provide 10 community gardens training and mentoring in seed growing and seed saving with experienced facilitators, learning the steps to enhance seed supply for community gardeners around the island of Ireland, without having to rely on food seed imports to grow their own food. This is a two-year programme and will require commitment of six days training, the total value of which will be over €1,000 per group as well as mentoring, seeds, and ongoing support. Further details on how to apply are available at www.irishseedsavers.ie/blog. Closing date for applications is January 18, 2021.
Revenue warns online shoppers of additional costs Revenue is this week warning online shoppers to be aware of additional charges once purchased goods arrive in Ireland. Goods advertised online can seem attractively low, as tax and duty have not been included in the price advertised. Ms Maureen Dalton, Principal Officer in Revenue’s Customs Division, outlined that online shoppers need to be aware
of potential additional charges before buying. “Almost all goods arriving from non-EU countries will be liable to tax and duty. If you shop online, you need to check whether the advertised price includes any tax and duty costs due before you make your decision to buy the goods concerned. Last year, Revenue officers in postal depots around the country applied charges to almost 100,000 parcels
and packets. The average duty and VAT charge per parcel was €68.66." Explaining when these charges might arise Ms Dalton said, that “if the cost of the goods you buy, including transport, insurance and handling charges, is more than €22 you will have to pay VAT". "If your goods alone cost more than €150 you will have to pay Customs Duty and VAT. For example, if you bought a mobile phone online from China, at an equiva-
lent cost of €212, you would have to pay an additional €54.50 in Customs Duty, VAT, insurance and handling fees. When you buy alcohol and tobacco products online from outside the EU, VAT, Customs Duty and Excise Duty, are payable, regardless of the value of your purchase.” Further information on tax and duty charges that may arise on goods bought online for personal use can be found on revenue.ie.

SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL HEAR supports eligible students in third level
Beauty - By Jill O'Donoghue

Sothys moisturisers restore skin's hydration Preparations are well underway for Christmas this year and we are delighted to be able to offer some amazing moisturising gift sets with extra value this year. You'll receive a half price serum with each moisturiser in our Sothys Professional cosmeceutical skincare range, and all products are available to check out on www.killarneytoningandbeauty.com - just what is needed after the year we have all had! Well hydrated skin will remain supple and younger for much longer. It's important to hydrate the skin from within by drinking two litres of water daily. Almost two thirds of the skin is made up of water and can be constantly dehydrated from indoor heating in the winter, as well as ageing; it's not just the summer the skin that can get dehydrated. If the dermis has a lack of water to nourish itself it will start to shrink, becoming more brittle, dull, rough to touch, have less elastin/col-
lagen and will inevitably age. This is why well hydrated skin is so important and a moisturiser can fight all these signs and restore the natural beauty and vitality of the dermis. Moisturiser can also provide skin with substances that have the ability to capture and retain water inside the cells e.g. hyaluronic acid, peptides, vitamins, and minerals. It creates a protective barrier and prevents the build-up of dead cells, debris, dust, all of which prevent the skin from breathing. It also prevents dryness, the appearance of flaking, impurities and hugely improves the skin's elasticity. This can all be boosted even more with the use of a serum under the moisturiser. Serums are the vitamins for the skin. Life is so different to our grandparent's times, we have more stress, a different diet, more computers, phones, and no down time, less sleep etc., this is why we need to treat the skin with more care. Take a look on the website for more infomation.
Online booking available, or if you have any question or would like book an appointment please call Jill 064 6632966.
The Higher Education Access Route (HEAR) is a college and university admissions scheme for school leavers that works parallel to the CAO system. It offers places on reduced points and extra college support to school leavers from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds who are resident in the Republic of Ireland and under the age of 23 in the January of entry to college. Mature and FET (Further Education and Training) students have their own admissions routes and should contact admissions offices in the colleges.
ELIGIBILITY
HEAR applicants must meet a range of financial, social and cultural indicators to be eligible. Students must meet Indicator 1 (low income) and a specific combination of two other indicators which include – medical/GP visit cards, means-tested social welfare payments, occupation status of parent of guardian (Socio-Economic group), disadvantaged status of the school (DEIS or non-DEIS) and local area. Other factors considered include children who are in the care of the State, HSE or TUSLA.
DEADLINES
Applications to HEAR can only be made online through CAO at www.cao.ie by firstly applying to CAO by February 1 at 5.15pm. Then the HEAR application must by filled out online by March 1 at 5.15pm and supporting documentation must be sent to CAO by March 15 at 5.15pm. These deadlines are strict and non-negotiable so it is the responsibility of applicants to meet them.
BENEFITS
A number of places are reserved in higher education courses for applicants that qualify for HEAR so it is possible for applicants to get offered a place if they have not made the cut-off points, however many applicants do achieve the required points each year. It is important to note that applicants must still meet the minimum and subject requirements for the particular course. Other academic, personal and social supports include – an Orientation Programme to college/university, extra tuition if needed, study skills and exam preparation, one-to-one meetings with student advisors, social gatherings (when permitted) and mentoring and

extra financial assistance when available as well as advice regarding grants and scholarships. Students who are eligible for grants (and who may or may not be eligible for HEAR) must apply separately to www.susi.ie. Further information on financial supports for third level are available on www.studentfinance.ie. A recent documentary series aired on RTÉ One explored the journeys of students who entered college through various Access routes including the HEAR scheme and it is well worth a look back at the inspirational stories depicted on ‘My Uni Life’ on the RTÉ Player. The series showed how given the right supports students coming from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds can not only access places in third level but thrive when they actually get there. Applications Information Events take place on HEAR every year to provide students and/or parents/guardians to meet online with a member of the HEAR team to discuss the application process and this year the national event will take place on Saturday, January 9 from 10am-2pm. For further details on information events and on the HEAR scheme itself as well as contact details for HEAR support staff in the various colleges see www.accesscollege.ie.

Showrooms across the region reopened on Tuesday morning, and while local dealers are reporting a strong trade in the opening few days since restrictions were eased, they are keeping a watchful eye on January. Traditionally, November is a strong month for pre-sales ahead of the new registration plate in January. Customers do their trade-in deals in November, giving dealers time to order new stock ahead of the New Year. Despite showrooms being closed for almost the entire month of November many local dealers used the downtime to introduce new sales methods. These included video sales presentations and virtual showrooms. These new methods are now translating into sales meetings and test drives during the month of December. “It is so far so good,” said Paul Ahern of
Ahern’s Garage in Castleisland, the county’s main dealer for BMW, Mazda, Opel and SEAT. “People were booking appointments for December, they had been through all the virtual stuff and now it is time to touch and drive the new car.” Reens of Rathmore, the county’s Peugeot dealer is reporting a similar uptake in sales appointments. “It will be hell for leather from now until Christmas,” said John Reen. “If we can maintain the same figures as July we will be grand. The reaction has been good so far.” July is always a strong month for car sales as the second year registration number is introduced at this time. “July was brilliant,” added Mr Reen. “But if we have lockdown again in January it won’t be good.” Randles Bros on the Muckross Road is the county’s main Nissan dealer. Dealer principal David Randles said although they were feeling the effects of the November shutdown, pre-sales are back ahead of the new January registration plate.

Make your hallway more welcoming A well presented hallway sets the tone of a house; it is where buyers form their first and last impressions of the inside of your home. It acts as a welcoming portal to your property. We set out below some simple but effective tips that we at DNG have picked up over the years in maximising your hallways entrance appeal. It is very important to clear the clutter: our hallways can very easily fill up with coats, shoes, boots, umbrellas etc. Remove them out of sight and make your hallway more welcoming.
By removing furniture from a narrow hallway you'll further enhance the feeling of space. Very often your entrance hallway can be one of the darkest rooms in your house. We should brighten up the hallway as best we can by repainting walls a neutral colour and the ceilings should always be white. Replace any lightbulbs that need it. Open all doors leading to other rooms to borrow natural light. A clever tip is to place a large mirror at the end of the hall or by the front door to reflect light. When adding the finishing touches to your hallway, keep it simple. Flowers
always give the space personality and colour. If your hall is long, consider hanging some framed prints or artwork at the same height along the hall to break up the space. Finally, a good sturdy doormat is essential when welcoming potential buyers and it helps cut down on floor cleaning! While not being the most important room in your house, if done well it can leave a lasting impression. A bright welcoming hallway free of clutter will immediately give buyers a positive feeling. It is then up to the other rooms in the house to build on this strong start.

Learn from my mistakes "Learn from the mistakes of others, you can’t live long enough to make them all yourself" - Eleanor Roosevelt While it may be tough to admit, everyone makes mistakes throughout their investing careers, whether it be a missed opportunity or the opportunity you wish you missed. Ultimately though, a well thought out investment plan is far more likely to end in success than failure, while keeping your funds ‘safe’ in a deposit account is a surefire way to lose money as inflation slowly erodes your earnings. Over the coming weeks, I will discuss a number of basic mistakes that new investors make in an effort to help you sidestep some of the most common investment pitfalls.
FOLLOWING THE CROWD
If following the crowd worked, we'd all be millionaires. You see it all the time, a temporary market slump brings hysteria, and previously level-headed investors throw their long-term investment plan out the window amidst all the panic, selling
at the least opportune time. Just this year, we saw markets fall over 30% only to hit all-time highs six months later. Many of those who sold at the bottom remained on the sidelines during the subsequent market rally, no doubt licking their financial wounds. It's worth noting that this is a two-way street. Everyone's investment history is tainted not just by realised losses but by the 'ones they sold too soon'. Realising profits too early can have a detrimental effect on your portfolio returns over time. Most investors will be lucky enough to be invested in a handful of mega-growth stocks in their lifetime. How they manage these investments is imperative to their portfolio's overall success. The one you sell too early may often haunt you more than the loss you actually realised. While it's tough to accept losing say, 30% of your position on a specific investment, selling your posi-
tion for a small profit, only to see that asset jump 1000% a few years down the line can be a harsh life lesson. Take it from me, I sold out of Shopify in early 2019, but the less said about that, the better….. remember what I said earlier 'we all make mistakes'.
STICK TO YOUR GUNS
You're going to go through periods where every fiber of your being is telling you to sell a stock you still believe in because of some temporary slump or a brief spike. Stick to your guns, and over time you'll reap the rewards of a longterm investment strategy. Keep changing your mind, and your returns will be eaten away by your indecision. For many investors, a great way to avoid the mental anguish that comes with watching your stock picks rise and fall is to invest in a broad basket of stocks through an ETF. This passive exposure allows you to participate in the rising tide of the market without getting caught up in the individual stock movements, keeping the aforementioned behavioural fallacies at bay.

Time is running out to exchange driving licences The National Driver Licence Service (NDLS) is issuing a final reminder to anyone resident in Ireland with a UK/NI driving licence that they need to exchange it now, as it will not be valid to drive here after December 31 due to Brexit.
John Healy of Healy Insurances.
While the UK has left the EU, a transition period was agreed that allowed for the exchange of driving licences to continue. That transition period ends on December 31. If you are resident in Ireland and using a UK/NI licence to drive, it will no longer be valid to drive on here in Ireland after this date.
It is vital that you have a valid driving licence and that you are legally allowed to drive in Ireland by exchanging a UK licence for an Irish driving licence. You should make an application as soon as possible as it can take longer to process a UK/NI licence exchange, and there may be further delays caused by a last-minute increase in applications, plus extra demand on the service due to COVID-19. You can now apply online to exchange it if you have a public services card and a verified mygovID. Alternatively, you can apply in person at an NDLS Centre. You must book an appointment in advance. More details can be found on www.ndls.ie. Licence exchange applications that in-
clude the original UK/Northern Ireland licence can be exchanged more speedily. If you do not submit your original UK/NI licence with your exchange application, NDLS will be unable to validate your application without significant delays. If you are submitting a Letter of Entitlement in place of a lost or expired licence you may be required to provide further verification from the DVLA in the UK and DVA in Northern Ireland. Please note that as a visitor to Ireland holding a UK/NI licence, you will be entitled to drive in Ireland for the period of your visit with your existing driving licence providing it is current and valid and that you carry it with you at all times. You will not be required to carry an International Driving Permit.

Mortgages - What do I need? Mortgage lenders are keen to lend at the moment. However, the level of examination of every applicant’s financial affairs has never been more intense. Stricter policies, procedures and requirements were put in place to ensure that there isn’t a repeat of the 2009 property crash, which was the result of reckless lending. If you are looking for a mortgage it is essential that you have all your ducks in a row before submitting an application.
DEPOSIT
During the property boom in the early noughties, it was common to borrow over 100% of the purchase price with little, or no personal financial input. Today, strict Loan To Value (LTV) policies requires applicants to contribute to the purchase themselves: First-time buyers, 10% deposit Next-time buyers 20% Buy-to-let mortgage 30% FX Loans 35% (e.g. ex-pat buying in Ireland – requirement can vary) e.g. A first time buyer paying
€300,000 will need to have a €30,000 deposit, plus legal costs and stamp duty. NOTE: All of the deposit need not come from savings. It can be gifted, and in the case of self-builds, if the site is already owned by the applicant, the value of the site can go towards the deposit.
BANK ACCOUNTS
Six months’ statements for all loan, savings and current accounts (incl. Revolut, DeGiro etc), are required. Lenders like to see: wages, rent and regular savings going through your bank account. Rent and regular savings will show that you have the ability to repay the mortgage. Things lenders don’t like to see include: unpaid debits, missed loan payments, overdrawn account balances, regular betting patterns, large unexplained
lodgements. Therefore, get your statements in order to give yourself the best chance of approval.
INCOME DOCUMENTS
PAYE: Three months’ payslips required for each applicant, along with a salary cert completed by your employer, detailing your earnings. Lenders work off the GROSS salary cert figure but your payslips must correspond. If you work in a job where you get overtime, allowances etc., lenders will look at your previous three years’ EDS (P60) figures and work out the average extra income based on these. They will allow up to 50% of the extra income and up to 100% of guaranteed allowances. Generally, lenders will only approve applicants in permanent employment, with any probation periods completed.
SELF EMPLOYED
Up to three years’ accounts are required and lenders use the average NET profit figure. Providing three years’ accounts makes it difficult for
start-ups, but does not rule them out. NOTE: Generally, lenders will lend 3.5 times your gross salary/net profit. Factors which may affect the maximum available to you include dependants or existing loans. Rental income, maintenance payments or social welfare payments are not considered income for mortgage purposes.
OTHER CRITERIA Clear credit rating. It is wise to order a credit report from icb.ie to ensure that any previous loans are correctly recorded on your file. If there are any issues, get them resolved before applying. If you lived abroad within three years of applying, you will need a credit check from that country. Mortgage brokers know exactly what lenders are looking for. Once they have the above information they can help package an application and relieve the client the stress of dealing with the lender directly. If you have any questions on mortgages email them to killarney@mcguireliston.ie or sales@killarneyadvertiser.ie.

GRIFFIN
In loving memory of a wonderful mother, grandmother and great-grandmother Kathleen Griffin, 21, Park Drive who died on 4th December, 2015
In loving memory of my darling wife Kathleen Griffin, 21, Park Drive who died on 4th December, 2015.
Mother
Softly the leaves of memory fall, Gently I bend to gather them all, Unseen, unheard, you are always near, So missed, so loved, so very dear.
God looked around his garden and saw an empty space, He then looked down upon the earth and saw your tired face. He put his arms around you and raised you up to rest. His garden must be beautiful, because he only takes the best. He knew you were in pain and that a cure was not to be, So he closed your weary eyelids and whispered “come to me”. With tearful eyes we watched you and saw you slip away, And though we loved you dearly, we knew you could not stay. It broke our hearts to lose you, but you did not go alone, For part of us went with you on the day God called you home.
I miss you now, my heart is sore, As time goes by I miss you more, Your loving smile, your precious face, No-one else can fill that space. In secret I weep, in silence I cry, As each lonely hour and day passes by, There’s only thought that eases my pain, And it’s knowing someday I’ll see you again. Beautiful memories treasured forever, Of the love and happiness we shared together, Your presence I miss, your memory I treasure, Loving you always, forgetting you never. Your loving husband Tim.
Always remembered by your loving son Tom and daughter-in-law Sheila xxx Grandmother As we look upon your picture, Sweet memories we recall, Of a face so full of sunshine, And a smile for one and all, Sweet Jesus take this message, To our dear Nana up above, Tell her how we miss her, And give her all our love. Your loving grandchildren Ian and Jess, Mark, Sandra and Tommy, Kevin and Emer. xxx Great-grandmother No matter how life changes, No matter what we do, A special place within our hearts, Is always kept for you. Your great-grandchildren Evan, Ewan, Hayden, TJ and Millie. xxx

PRAYER FOR HEALING Heavenly Father, I call on you right now in a special way. It is through your power that I was created. Every breath I take every morning I wake, and every moment of every hour, I live under your power. Father, I ask you now to touch me with that same power. For of you created me from nothing, you can certainly recreate me.. Fill me with the healing power of your spirit. Cast out anything that should not be in me. Mend what is broken. Root out any unproductive cells. Open any blocked arteries and rebuild any damaged areas. Remove all inflammation and cleanse any infection. Let warmth of your healing love pass through my body to make new any unhealthy areas so that my body will function the way you created it to function. And Father, restore me to full health in mind and body so that I may serve you the rest of my life. I ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. With Thanks, A.M

He never looked for praises, He was never one to boast, He just went on quietly working, For the ones he loved the most. His dreams were seldom spoken, His wants were very few, and most of the times his worries went unspoken too. My memories are always near a lifetime that we shared I hope that you knew how much I loved you and how much I cared. If I could send you a birthday cake with candles to blow out It would be on its way to you, of that there is no doubt. But I will light a candle as I say my birthday wishes And when I blow it out I will be sending you a million kisses. No games in sight for Lakers and Cougars as 2020/21 season gets cancelled The best laid plans of the Scotts Lakers and the Killarney Cougars were thrown into disarray this past week when Basketball Ireland announced that the 2020/21 Men’s National League season was to be cancelled with immediate effect. The campaign had been on ice since mid-October when the league’s governing body indefinitely suspended the big tip-off due to COVID concerns but on Saturday CEO Bernard O’Byrne said they had “no alternative” but to call the whole thing off. “Basketball Ireland has been lobbying government, but still have been ignored,” O’Byrne said. “It shall not stop fighting for recognition and answers from government. The MNCC (Men’s National Competitions Committee) feel that certainty is needed and we cannot keep our clubs, players, officials and volunteers waiting. “We would have loved to start our season on January 9, but we’ve been left with no choice. Basketball Ireland has been doing its utmost to help our clubs during these difficult times and it shall continue to do so.” Notably, the National Cup competitions have not been cancelled just yet. “We will continue to make the case to the political decision-makers for the playing of elite basketball in 2021,” an official statement read. “We hope that a competition may be possible in February/March, which will give our players and supporters something to look forward to.
TUASON
Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser this week, Killarney Cougars player/
coach Justin Tuason said the decision to kill the season was “super unexpected”. “It’s tough because we were prepared and we took all the measures we were asked to take,” the San Francisco native said. “Not a single case was transmitted throughout preseason. We have our whole team here and we were ready to go. “They’re saying that the virus is easily transmitted in an enclosed environment. But how many cases were there throughout six weeks of preseason when we were playing matches and travelling? “I’m sure that precautions are being taken in GAA and soccer and every sport, including basketball, so I don’t understand why we’re on the short leash. We seem to be like the little brother of the whole sporting family of Ireland. We don’t get the same trust as the other sports, who are maybe deemed more essential than us in terms of viewers and membership. “Cancelling the season seems premature. Maybe it’s pre-emptive. But I do understand that the situation is serious. The selfish side of me wants to be like, ‘nah, screw it, let’s go play’, but the adult in me knows that there are bigger fish to fry. “There is some hope that we can resume training and playing locally before too long but as of now, I’m expecting nothing for a few months.”
DISAPPOINTING
For his part, Scotts Lakers (St Paul’s) head coach Jarlath Lee described the news as “very disappointing”. “It has been a horrible few days since we found out about it,” Lee said. “The players, coaches and the committee

4.12.2020 are dejected. The committee put a lot of work in this year to make the club financially stable. “It’s just very inconsistent. It’s a 5v5 game, it’s not 15v15, yet the 15v15 can play. We had three preseason friendlies. Two against Killorglin and one against Tralee. All the precautions were taken. It went as smoothly as anything. Not one person got [COVID]. “Then you hear that the ladies’ season hasn’t been cancelled yet. There are two separate chairpeople (for the women’s and the men’s) and apparently they don’t agree. There’s just no consistency there.” Lee agrees with Tuason’s assessment in that he also feels as though the Basketball Ireland’s decision was perhaps premature. “It was definitely a bit early because we’re only opening up at the moment and [Bernard O’Byrne] has decided to shut it down. He’s saying that he isn’t getting recognition from the government, but that’s his job. He needs to fix that. Then he says that we could do something in February and March; he hasn’t cancelled the National Cups so they’re supposed to be going ahead at some stage. It’s just a bit of a mess. It’s not professional. “The football season will be starting around that time. The commitment I had from my players, and it’s why I had such a big squad, was that they were to give 100% to their football but once
the football was over, they were to give 100% to me. That’s what was happening. A few of the younger guys are going to be sitting their Leaving Cert as well. If they do hold some competition in February or March, I honestly don’t know how many players I’ll have available for that. “Ben Miller has gone back to Canada and Matias Boho has signed for a team in Spain. Ben loved Killarney and he would love to come back, but he has to look after himself as well. “We certainly won’t be bringing in any imports at that stage (February or March).”
going to make the panel of 12. He’s only 16. Jamie O’Sullivan is 17. He was brilliant in preseason. We have a very young team and they’re going to lose a year of their basketball careers.” Tuason echoed those sentiments. “It’s really bad for our young guys. This could be a whole year that they miss out on. It was supposed to be their first National League experience and it

would have been an invaluable one for them. That’s a real shame in my eyes. “I think we would still get good numbers at training even if there weren’t any matches. But they’re restricting us from training even, which is the unfortunate part. “But we have 20 guys ready to go, whether that’s next season or a bit sooner than that.”
OUTDOOR TRAINING
Other sports like soccer look set to return to collective training this week as the government’s COVID restrictions are eased but, for the time being at least, basketballers are not really being afforded the same luxury. Clubs are restricted to outdoor training in pods of 15, which is fine for outdoor sports but naturally less fine for basketball, which requires, at the very least, dry conditions. This makes things quite quite difficult given the weather at this time of year, and Lee says his team’s focus is now on regrouping in the New Year. “At this stage I’d say we’ll enjoy Christmas and knuckle down in January. “Player development halts, that’s the big thing. A lot of the kids have been getting better. Senan O’Leary was

Waterford were nine points down at one stage late in the first half and seven down at half-time; their manager Liam Cahill must have given an amazing pep talk during the interval. Munster rivals tee up mouth-watering finale Eamonn Fitzgerald runs the rule over last weekend’s hurling semi-finals as Limerick and Waterford advance to the All-Ireland final As with other interests throughout 2020, this has been a topsy-turvy season for the GAA. The games were on, the virus struck and all action was suspended for Lockdown 1. Would there be any games played? They got going with the club scene first and then the intercounty. The All-Ireland series went back to the old way of knock-out. Winner alright on the day. No back door, no second chance and the results were amazing. Shocks were the order of the day. Out
went Kerry football to arch-rivals Cork, even if everyone knew Cork were a poor outfit. That came home to roost in the Munster final when a rejuvenated Tipperary ended decades of defeat to claim their Munster crown. Up north, odds on favourites Donegal succumbed to a resurgent Cavan, who came from 10 points down at different stages in their unexpected victory in the Ulster final. At long last they could cease the singing of ‘The Gallant John Joe (O Reilly)’. Grown up adults cried unashamedly when the cup was
raised. It may well have been their All-Ireland. More about that later in this month. On to the hurling and my choice to lift the MacCarthy Cup before a solitary ball was struck was Limerick. It still is, even if I was not too impressed with them on Sunday last as they just did enough to get over the line by 27 points to 24. Yes, no goals, unusual at this stage. No joy for Cork. The hoped for resurgence in Cork hurling never materialised. The Rebels had made a special ef-
fort this year to redress the imbalance at the top table of hurling. It has been too long to have them out of the limelight. They were kings of hurling on so many occasions in the past. Christy Ring, arguably the most influential hurler of all time was born in 1920. It would be a fitting year to lift the coveted cup. Mo bhrón, they had no one like Ringy, who combined brawn with skill and mighty courage. John McCullagh and other native Corkonians domiciled in Killarney will have to wait another year.
SPORT
4.12.2020 Out too went more big-hitters like Kilkenny, Galway, Tipp and Clare. All stumbled and now we have the unheralded Waterford v Limerick All-Ireland final on December 13, to be played in front of a near empty Croke Park. The winners probably won’t be allowed take home the MacCarthy Cup in the traditional way. We will wait and see how that will pan out.
MAGNIFICENT WATERFORD
Waterford created one of the big upsets this year on Saturday night. Nine points down at one stage late in the first half and seven down at half-time, their manager Liam Cahill must have given an amazing pep talk during the interval. He must have highlighted some of the greats of the past, who hurled for the Déise for so many years yet didn’t win an All-Ireland. I think of men like Brick Walsh, Dan Shanahan, Tony Browne, Eoin Kelly and John Mullane, of course. The latter lived on the edge, was often sent off but he loved Waterford and they loved him. You will surely see him on TV in the run up to the final and his raw emotive comment, “I love my county, I love Waterford”. Cahill surely bottled that, instilling in his players that too often
in the past Waterford hurled well, but rarely won. No surrender in 2020, not even to giants Kilkenny. They were magnificent in that second half carving out a well-deserved 2-27 to 2-23 win against Kilkenny, who were shoe-in certainties for yet another All-Ireland final. Almost singlehandedly the evergreen TJ Reid kept Kilkenny well ahead in the first half with spectacular scores from frees and from play. This was typified by his brilliant goal. It seemed that Conor Prunty, the Waterford fullback and captain had picked a high ball safely, but he mistimed it marginally and wily TJ only needed a half chance. Instinctively, he took off at breakneck speed and buried the sliotar into the back of the net. Now 33 years old, he sprinted like a ‘garsún’ for that brilliant goal. It looked as if Brian Cody had got it right once more and was leading Kilkenny to their 17th All-Ireland final under his watch. Not so. Waterford refused to bend the knee and ordinary men grew into heroes in that second half. These included Tadhg de Búrca, back after a cruciate injury, Jamie Barron, Jack Prendergast and crucially Stephen
Bennett who ended with a bagful of scores, 1-10 and 1-4 of that was from play. Whereas Waterford missed some good scoring chances in the first half, Bennett, in particular, delivered a match-winning tally in the second. They scored 2-17 and only one point of that was from a free. This was a thrilling game to watch with great skill to behold, especially the split-second timing to pluck the sliotar in those aerial duels, those pinpoint passes, how they picked the ball so cleanly and balanced in on the hurley, as they raced towards goal. Plenty manly tackles and a few welcome shemozzles. No place for the faint-hearted as up to a dozen players engaged scrum-like to poke out the yellow sliotar, without the burden of being offside.
LIMERICK (ONLY JUST)
In the second semi-final I expected Limerick to win by five or six points, but they were relieved to qualify for the final with just a few points to spare. Some of their players did not come up to speed, so they had to rely on Kyle Hayes, Tom Morrissey, Gearóid Hegarty (lucky enough not to get a yellow card for pulling the hurley across Joe
91
Canning’s back) and rover Barry Nash. Diarmuid Byrnes scored that all important free near the end. For Galway, the stand-out man was Joe Canning. He was their scoring machine, especially those sideline cuts. He drilled four points from different angles, and that is a record. Four converted sideline pucks in the one match. He was forced off later in the game with suspected severe concussion. If he had been on for the whole game, he might well have forced extra- time. It was a joy to see him score from all angles an all distances. Hopefully he will recover well from the injury; it is always sad to see a player stretchered off in a game.
FINALS
So, it’s Waterford v Limerick for the 2020 All-Ireland hurling final on December 13 and the great news is of course is that Kerry will be playing in the curtain-raiser. More about that later. Hopes were high enough earlier in the year of Kerry being in the football final, the team best equipped to stop Dublin’s six-in-a-row, but on a very wet day in Páirc Uí Chaoimh a Collingwood rookie ended that dream with a late goal.

De Bruyne tipped to do the damage
City have a string of favourable home matches against low-ranked teams Kevin De Bruyne could be the goto selection for FPL captaincy over the next few weeks as the Man City playmaker looks to continue his fine run of form against the league’s also-rans.
The Belgian international laid on two assists in City’s last outing against Burnley and in the process reached double figures for the second time this season. Upcoming home games against Fulham, West Brom and Newcastle, as well

as an away fixture against Southampton, could afford De Bruyne plenty of opportunities to rack up points for any managers who give him the armband. At £11.7m he certainly isn’t cheap but the creative midfielder has what it takes to be a difference-maker over the next month or so.
MADDISON
The FPL Scout reckons that Chelsea defender Reece James (£5.1m) is another option worth exploring. “The right-back offers a cut-price route into Chelsea’s improved defence for their home encounter with Leeds United. The Blues have kept five clean sheets this season, more than any other side. Four of those shutouts have come in the last five Gameweeks, with Chelsea conceding just a single goal against Sheffield United in that run. “The underlying statistics highlight Chelsea's improved strength at the back. They have allowed their opponents only nine shots on target from Gameweek 6 onwards, the joint-best record along with Manchester City. Frank Lampard’s side have conceded only 18 shots during that period, second only to Man City’s 14. “James’ prospects at the other end of the pitch are just as encouraging for FPL managers. He has supplied a team-leading 62 crosses, almost double the 32 of left-back Ben Chilwell (£6.2m).”

In the Killarney Advertiser/Brian James League, the gap at the top has been cut to just nine points as second place Seán House has made up some ground on the leader, Brian Murphy. Murphy endured a disappointing enough week; his tally of 45 was the lowest of all managers in the top 10. In fact, 11 points now separate the
top four as Frank Herlihy and Alan Murphy lie just behind House heading into Gameweek 11. Gavin Moriarty, Sam Samuel, Dan O’Brien, Richard Goggin, Billy Courtney and Daniel O’Sullivan complete the top 10. Meanwhile, 21 points from Man City winger Riyad Mahrez helped Owen Hayes to the top spot in our November Manager of the Month competition. Hayes will receive a €50 voucher for Brian James for his troubles.
arrive on time due to COVID-19 related production issues. Instead of the launch, he is inviting fans to visit his Facebook page 'Kevin Coyne Racing #64' where they can guess the type of motorcycle he will race next year by correctly identifying parts of the bike’s racing exhaust system. All correct entries will be entered into a draw for a full VIP spectator package to a British Superbike Championship meeting next season. The new, fully built, motorcycle will be unveiled before Christmas. “Unfortunately, it does not look much of a bike right now as some parts just did not arrive,” he said. “We have come up with this idea instead. It is a pretty cool prize.” Sponsorship packages for the 2021 season are now available by contacting his father, Mark, on 087 2726287.
QUIZ: Do you know your racing bikes? If you can identify Kevin Coyne’s 2021 bike from this picture you could be in with a chance of winning VIP tickets to a British Superbike Championship round.

F assbender's Le Mans bonus episode
Michael Fassbender will release a bonus episode of his Road to Le Mans online documentary tonight (Friday). The Fossa-reared Hollywood A-lister is planning to contest the 24 Hours of Le Mans in France next year and charted his progress in the preparatory European Le Mans Series this year with a weekly online series. The sixth episode was broadcasted last week. In a previous interview, Fassbender hinted that he was planning on bringing a motor racing movie to Hollywood and asked fans to keep an eye on the sixpart Road to Le Mans series. So far he has not confirmed any movie deal but tonight’s bonus episode is a surprise and could be used to reveal that
plan. So far, each episode has clocked up over two million views. |
C oyne offers sneak preview to 2021 season
Kevin Coyne has come up with an unusual method to launch his 2021 season. The Farranfore-based motorcycle racer has confirmed that he will step up to the National Superstock 600 class in the British Superbike Championship after spending this year contesting the British Junior Supersport Championship on his Kawasaki. A new bike arrived at his Killarney workshop this week and the build is nearing completion. The 18-year-old intended to unveil the new motorcycle on Saturday last but that idea got pushed back after body panels and other key parts did not

OPINION WEEKLY SPORT
Our sports editor ADAM MOYNIHAN shares his thoughts on the week's burning issues
Dreaded ‘Year 3’ is the one to worry about
Peter Keane is facing a revolt – that’s the latest from my ever-reliable, ever-anonymous source on WhatsApp. He didn’t let me down when he told me that the army were about to roll through the streets of Killarney in armoured tanks to enforce the lockdown, so why should I doubt him now? Current and former players have emphatically stated that the widely-circulated rumours of an uprising are false, but I do think that Peter Keane is facing some tough questions at the moment, both from below and from above. The nature of the Cork defeat means that everything must be on the table for discussion, and the players and the county board wouldn’t be doing their jobs if they weren’t searching for answers. But realistically Keane’s job was never truly in danger this year. For all the talk of how ruthless and how demanding we are down here, you’d swear we get through managers like Real Madrid, and that Florentino Pérez, not Tim Murphy, was the chairman of the Kerry County Board. The fact of the matter is that Kerry don’t really sack managers, and the history books back that up.
WALKING AWAY
If we work backwards starting with Keane’s predecessor, Eamonn Fitzmaurice, he resigned in 2018 with two years remaining on his contract. Before that, Jack O’Connor stepped down in 2012 despite having a year to go, Pat O’Shea walked away in 2009 of his own accord, and O’Connor ended his first reign voluntarily after leading Kerry to the All-Ireland in 2006. Although Fitzmaurice was facing scrutiny following Kerry’s poor showing in the 2018 Super 8s, there is nothing to indicate that the county board were keen on replacing him. They explicitly wanted O’Connor (both times) and O’Shea to stay on. Things famously got very sour towards the end of Páidí Ó Sé’s tenure, but technically the outspoken bainisteoir was not fired. While it is true that Ó Sé wanted to stay on for the 2004 season, and it is also true that Kerry GAA didn’t want that to happen, his contract was up at the end of ‘03 anyway. After three years without an All-Ireland and the “roughest type of f***ing animals” comment, which was made during the team holiday in South Africa in January of that year, Ó Sé’s ap-

proval rating was low. Kerry GAA decided against offering him a new deal, which is different to sacking him. A technicality, perhaps, but a point worth noting nonetheless.
UNLUCKY NO. 3
Incidentally, as Páidí found out, ‘three’ is a bit of cursed number for Kerry managers in in general. If an All-Ireland isn’t secured by the end of year three, things turn bad. And fast. Not even the great Micko was immune to it. After three below-par years without winning football’s biggest prize (198789), he resigned. Mickey Ned O’Sullivan took over from O’Dwyer for the 1990 campaign and after a disappointing three-year period, which culminated in the shock defeat to Clare in 1992, he called it a day. Another O’Dwyer protégé, Ogie Moran, got the job in 1993 and he also lasted three years before stepping aside, allowing his former teammate Páidí Ó Sé to take over for 1996. Páidí secured his first All-Ireland as manager in 1997 (his second year) and his second in 2000 (three years later). As soon as he went three straight years without securing the Holy Grail (2001-2003), he was gone. Each of the next three managers brought Sam home at the first attempt (O’Connor in 2004 and 2009, and O’Shea in 2007), but when O’Connor went three years without an All-Ireland (2010-2012), he resigned. His successor, Eamonn Fitzmaurice, won his first All-Ireland in 2014 (his second year) and then did what no other Kerry manager had done in half a century. After going three years without an All-Ireland (2015-2017), he stayed on for another crack of the whip in 2018. That was supposed to be the final year of his contract but he secured a two-year extension before his final year had even begun. This new deal would have kept Fitzmaurice in charge right up to the end of the current season, but the Finuge man decided to pass the reins at the end of 2018. So, what does this all mean for Peter Keane? Well, as disappointingly as 2020 turned out, his head was never really on the chopping block. But history suggests that in this part of the world, patience wears thin after Year 3. If another 12 months pass by without Sam Maguire making his long-awaited return, that salacious WhatsApp gossip could enter the realm of reality.

Muckross Rowing Club LEVEL 3: Some welcome news this weekend as the public health restrictions have been eased from Level 5 to Level 3 until at least Wednesday, January 6. The main change for club activities is a return of adult training and indoor training is again permitted but on an individual basis only. This does mean the Muckross Community Centre will remain off limits for all group training. All outdoor group training continues to be limited to groups of 15 only. Face masks must also continue to be worn in and around the boathouse and community centre when not in a boat and before/after all training. EVENTS UPDATE: As expected, no competitive rowing events are permitted to take place for the duration of the Level 3 public health restrictions. In a normal year, our own Muckross Head of the River time trial event would have been due to take place this Saturday. With the promising news surrounding COVID-19 vaccines, the prospect of a regatta season next year is increasing greatly. Subject to a successful rollout of vaccines, it looks almost certain that we will be making preparations for a Muckross HOR event once more for December 2021.
Deerpark Pitch & Putt REOPEN FOR PLAY: As of last Tuesday we are re-open to play for members only following the placing of the country into Level 3 Public Health guidelines. Members are reminded they must leave confirmation of entry and exit from the course on club phone (087 7823138) for contract tracing purposes. CHRISTMAS TURKEYS: We resume the Turkey draws this Sunday with an entry of €5 per draw. Please have names entered for 9am and 10.45am respectively for the two draws. Handicap adjustments from the first weekend played back in October apply. REST OF 2020: We intend to have another weekend of Turkey draws on Sunday December 13 followed by a Hamper competition on Sunday December 20. The Danny Nolan Memorial is scheduled for St Stephens Day once more this year while we hope to make an announcement about U16 competitions in due course.
