Relief as Anastasiya arrives safely from Kyiv to Kerry

"Nobody expected it to happen - I know I'm physically safe but mentally it's not easy" | By Michelle Crean The horrors of war on her doorstep forced one Ukrainian woman to immediately flee her beloved country to the safety of Kerry this week. There was huge relief on Wednesday when Anastasiya Ostrovska (24) - who lived on the 25th floor of a Kyiv apartment - landed safely in Dublin - after days of travelling through her country, across the Moldovan border and out through Romania. Anastasiya, her mother Natalya Ostrovska, and Natalya Maxymenko who works in Tesco Deerpark, were very emotional when they spoke to the Killarney Advertiser yesterday (Thursday) about the atrocities in their home country over the past eight days after Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered millions of Russian troops to invade Ukraine. Since then thousands have died - including children - as the Ukrainian people continue to fight for their freedom. Millions have fled into neighbouring Poland and other the countries to get to safety. "It was definitely a shock for everybody it was a regular day last Wednesday, I had a coffee with friends and I said I'd meet them on Saturday," Anastasiya told the Killarney Advertiser. "I went home and woke up to war. Something was happening [in the weeks beforehand] but nobody expected it [war] to happen." She added that everyone remained calm

at first but began making practical plans to leave. "It wasn't chaos, all the people were trying to be calm, getting money and medications from the pharmacy and fresh water just in case, some people were trying to find a safe place. I thought I'd just escape Kyiv and go to my small town Vinetsa. I got there, but it took a long time. There were queues of people walking with bags. I wasn't scared as [at that time] the shooting was on the military bases - but I was always on alert." Anastasiya made her way to the Moldovan border onto Romania where she met her emotional parents who travelled from Kerry to meet her. From there they flew to Dublin and onto Kerry. "I know I'm physically safe but mentally it's not easy. I

have friends over there." The three women said that they are all very grateful for all the support not only worldwide but from the people of Kerry and Ireland. "We are very grateful and amazed with the support - the whole world is on our side. I thought we'd be by ourselves." Speaking about Putin, Anastasiya said that "all the world knows he's a crazy mad man". Natalya Maxymenko works in Tesco Deerpark is worried everyday for the safety of her 73-year-old mother. "She's 100kms from Russian soldiers. She doesn't want to leave her home. All of us hope it will be over soon." She added that she's also very grateful to her colleagues and the public who are generously dropping donations into her workplace.

Collections are also being arranged at the reception area of Killarney Garda Station. Donations can also be dropped tomorrow night (Saturday) at the Scotts Lakers game in the Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre.

VOLUNTEER Loads of different centres countywide are seeking volunteers to help box up goods. Go to 'Kerry for Ukraine' on Facebook and find out when and where you can help.

Local Ukrainian woman fears for family members | By Sean Moriarty A Ukrainian woman living in Killarney is very "worried" and is praying for members of her family who have volunteered for the army in an effort to stop the Russian invasion. Iryna Rudenko is originally from the Sumy region of Ukraine but she has been living and working in Killarney since 2003. Sumy is about five hours drive east of Kyiv and very close to the Russian border. Her home city has been the scene of heavy fighting and one of the first places where Ukrainian and Russian troops clashed on the first day of the invasion.

Iryna, who manages the Gala Store on Upper College St, has a cousin and a nephew who signed up for the Ukrainian army since the start of the conflict one week ago. “No one pushed them [to join the army], they wanted it,” she told the Killarney Advertiser. “I am very worried.” She is still coming to terms with the fact that Russia has invaded her home country. “No one wants this war, we never believed he would do it,” she added. “He [Putin] is mad, he should be in the hospital.” Today (Friday) she is organising a fundraiser at the Gala shop to raise funds for

humanitarian organisations. The sale of every tea and coffee will be donated to the cause. While her fundraiser will go on all day she is expecting large numbers of the local Ukrainian community at the shop at 1pm where they will fly their blue and yellow national flag. “We are getting great support already,” she added, “You know when somebody comes into the shop and buys 20 shampoos that they are going to a local collection.” A similar event is taking place at the Going Green Cafe on Beech Road between 10am until 4pm and money raised will be donated to the Red Cross.

Kingdom turns blue and yellow to support Ukraine Today (Friday) Kerry will change colours from Green and Gold to blue and yellow for a Day of Support for the people of Ukraine.

“It’s about helping humanity” Volunteers organising Ukraine collections overwhelmed by Kerry support | By Michelle Crean The overwhelming amount of donations pouring in from thousands countywide to help Ukrainian people has left organisers overwhelmed and extremely emotional this week. A week ago Russia declared war on neighbouring country Ukraine leaving millions terrified for their lives, hundreds - including young children - dead, and millions fleeing to nearby countries seeking safe refuge. A compassionate plea to the people of Kerry was made by Polish people living in Killarney, for practical donations to help those who left Ukraine with just the clothes on their backs, and donations are pouring in across different drop off points in Kerry including Killarney. Practical items such as blankets, sleeping bags, camping mats, towels, shampoos, soap, shower gels, toothpaste, toothbrushes, sanitary towels, wet wipes, Pampers, toilet paper, dry food including rice, pasta, tinned fish, meat and vegetables, baby food, chocolate, tea, coffee, and sugar can be donated to the Killarney Methodist Church, Countess Road between 12 and 5pm tomorrow (Saturday). Konrad Paprocki, Iza Dian, Diana Sobas Gorka say the response so far “has been incredible”. It's hoped that once sorted and packed up the goods will be moved to a local warehouse and ready for trucks to deliver to Warsaw in Poland early next week, ready to then be distributed along the Ukraine border. “We just came up with an idea to help, it’s not political, it’s humanitarian. We were never prepared for the support we got,” Konrad told the Killarney Advertiser.

“I want to assure anyone I can that I will do everything within my power to get them [items donated] to Poland. We’re cooperating with the Polish Red Cross. The Irish Red Cross is separate and they are collecting money. We won’t accept any money.” They are asking that any further items donated in the coming days be boxed up but not sealed, and they also need donations of tape to seal up the boxes. They are asking also that food stuff be packed separate from medical items. He added that Poland is very much “united with the world” when it comes to helping Ukraine and that he can’t thank the local people and the businesses enough who have offered so much help over the last few days.

FEAR

Iza fears Russian troops could move into Poland next and says she’s worried for her family. “Poland could be next and I’m worried for my family. I have a 92-year-old nan. I was talking to my father who lives on the west side of Poland he said it’s very well organised in the big cities [helping Ukranians] but the amount of people there is shocking to him – but no one is left behind which is amazing.” And speaking of Putin’s reign of terror, Konrad said what Putin is doing is just evil. “If someone threatened to use nuclear weapons against the world like he did – he is crazy. We’re doing everything we can to help Ukrainian people. The biggest evil is Putin who started the war himself.” Any items which cannot go to Poland will be auctioned on the Facebook page 'Kerry for Ukraine' with funding going to the people of Ukraine or items will be dropped to local charity shops, he added.

Lead by local media organisations including the Killarney Advertiser, the people of Kerry and beyond are invited to come together to make their voices heard in a show of support for the Ukrainian people. Getting involved is very easy. It can be a simple hand drawn flag, some coloured balloons, changing their social media posts and using the #Kerrysupportsukraine or whatever people wish. Individuals or groups displaying the Ukrainian colours or organising events can contact ukraine@radiokerry.ie and Radio Kerry will help to share them. Radio Kerry General Manager, Fiona Stack said the Day of Support is in response to the many listeners who are contacting the station wishing to express their concern at events in Ukraine, the plight and courage of Ukrainian people and looking for ways to help and support them in any way possible. “We are lucky enough to live in a democracy where people can have their say," Fiona Stack said. "In previous years we have held a County Colours Day when the Kerry Team have been taking part in All-Ireland's so people

throughout the Kingdom and beyond will be invited to do the same but this time displaying the colours of the Ukrainian flag in their homes, schools and businesses.” The Killarney Advertiser, Kerry’s Eye and the Kerryman will partner with Radio Kerry on the initiative. All three papers have this week published a special supplement including a coloured pull out of the Ukrainian flag which people can display should they wish. Tralee Printing have generously given their time and expertise. “It’s no longer just Governments that can express a view, in the modern world of mass media ordinary people have multiple ways to have their voices heard too and the media organisations in Kerry wanted to come together to provide a forum for those voices. We don’t believe a single county in the west of Ireland has the power to change Mr Putin’s views, but maybe enough ordinary people around the world speaking up can influence other ordinary people to say – not in our name.” Even though it is only a small thing it will hopefully make them and their families back at home aware of the support of the people of Kerry. Radio Kerry will share the messages on its social media channels and will attempt to forward them to a sister radio station in Ukraine.

Barber shop to help Ukrainians | By Michelle Crean A Palestinian family now living in Killarney - who themselves have experience of war - have decided to donate a day's takings from their business to help the Ukrainian people. Local business owners Mo and Fatima Salah, who opened VIP Turkish Barbers in 2019 in Market Lane, will donate the money paid by customers on Monday to help the Ukrainian people who are fleeing their homes as a result of the past week's war raged by Russian President Vladimir Putin. Anyone who calls and pays for a hair cut, beard shave or a hot towel shave

will be helping the cause, Mo explained to the Killarney Advertiser. "I want all the money from Monday's customers to go to the Ukrainian people," he said. "Anything we get from customers we will donate." Mo is originally from Nablus in the West Bank Palestine and says they know how scared the people fleeing their country feel. "I know how the war affects people," he said. "I'm from a similar background. Isreal occupied our country so we know how they feel. I want to use my profession to help. We just want to give something back to support them."

A Plunkett St coffee shop is celebrating after being named in the Financial Times list of 'Best Independent Coffee Shops in the World'. Bean in Killarney, which only opened in late January 2021, was one of 30 coffee shops worldwide - and one of only two in Ireland - to make the list, which includes entries from world cities like Paris, London and Sydney. Bean in Killarney is a sister café to Bean in Dingle which was set up by brothers Justin and Luke Burgess. The local branch is managed by brothers Joey and Euan Boland, who are also from Dingle.

“It is nice to get recognition, especially as a new business,” Joey told the Killarney Advertiser. “Our main focus is to make the best speciality coffee and we strive to be the best.” They have no idea when the Financial Times journalist visited their shop but the feature was published on ft.com on Monday. 'Set in a bright yellow shop near the shores of Lough Leane, Bean in Killarney is a family-run business at the forefront of Ireland’s coffee scene. Among its favourite offerings is An Fear Marbh [The Dead Man], a caramel-inflected blend named after the Dingle Peninsula landmark. Ashe’s Annascaul pork and black pudding sausage rolls complete the County Kerry experience,' said the Financial Times.

Getting in on all the racing action and finding the top tips will benefit a Kerry charity during a local Cheltenham Preview Night. | By Michelle Crean From Tuesday March 15 to Friday March 18, there'll be four extraordinary days of racing at the popular UK race festival. However, Killarney Racegoers Club are organising a preview night beforehand, on Wednesday March 9, and will be talking to a panel of guests to give punters the inside scoop. It begins at 8.30pm sharp in the Fáilte Hotel and is set to benefit the Southwest Counselling Centre. MC on the night will be Vince Casey. The panel will include top racing pundit Paddy Wilmott, leading jockey Conor McNamara, racing tipster and analyst Killian Broderick and bookmaker Brendan Tyther. "The Killarney Racegoers Club have been doing Cheltenham Preview Nights since the 1990s," Vince told the Killarney Advertiser. "Last year we did a virtual one and we

are really looking forward to doing a live event again this year in the Fáilte. Paddy Wilmott has been on the panel with many years and has given punters some great winners at big prices, while Conor McNamara gave a 33/1 last year. Killian Broderick, another racing enthusiast is a shrewd judge and again looks to give value bets and has been very profitable to follow while Brendan Tyther, who is our only bookmaker in the club, will provide his insights along with providing some special bets on the night," he said. "We are delighted to partner with Southwest Counselling Centre, who provide a fantastic service to our community and who are dependent on private donations. Last year we raised €1,800 which was spent on a new play area in the centre. While entry is free on the night we are asking people to make a donation to this wonderful cause via our GoFundMe page 'South West Counselling'. All donations will go to the charity."

Jana offers services to raise funds | By Tristan O’Donoghue Jana Lalikova from the Czech Republic, who has lived in Ireland for more than 13 years, is appealing to the public to help Ukraine. Jana, who runs rehabilitation and physiotherapy practice Perfect Therapy Clinic at the Reeks Gateway has organised a fundraiser that will take place Saturday March 12 and 19 at the clinic where people can

book a 30-minute massage for €30 - or more if you would like to increase your donation. All the funds will go directly to Ukraine to aid the ongoing crisis. This isn’t Jana’s first time offering her help to people in faraway lands. Last June when a tornado struck the South Moravia region of the Czech Republic killing five people and leaving more than 150 injured, Jana raised more than €1,300 to aid the people affected by the disaster.

Killarney Outlet Centre sells for more than €7 million | By Sean Moriarty The Killarney Outlet Centre has been sold costing the new - and unknown - owners - over €7 million. The lower Park Road shopping centre has been on the market for the last five years by Green Property, the company that developed the site in 1998. Dublin-based property adviser CBRE handled the sale but the new owners have not been revealed. The sale comes in the same week that anchor tenant Nike left the centre. The

American sport's retailer was one of the centre’s longest serving tenants and the closure of the shop this week will result in the loss of around 20 jobs. Centre management declined to comment on the sale saying it was a matter for the new owners and that their role was to manage the centre regardless of who owned it. Other major retailers based at the centre include the Kerry GAA Store and Costa Coffee. Bus Eireann’s Killarney depot is based at the shopping centre and the bus terminal includes a privately operated café.

AWARD: IHF Kerry Branch Employee of the Year 2022, Joe Moriarty, Dromhall Hotel, pictured with Hotel Manager and Chairperson of Kerry IHF, Bernadette Randles. Photo: Marie Carroll-O'Sullivan

Loyal and diligent Joe voted Employee of the Year Diligence, a hardworking attitude, reliability and honesty over a 47-year career culminated in Joe Moriarty receiving a major accolade this week. With 47 years hotel experience under his belt, beginning as a waiter in the Dromhall and Randles hotels, Joe was honoured to receive this year’s Irish Hotel Federation’s Kerry Employee of the Year at the Ballygarry Hotel on Wednesday. “The Dromhall and Randles Hotel are proud to nominate long time employee and all-rounder Joe Moriarty for this year’s IHF Employee of the Year,” Bernadette Randles, Chairperson of the Kerry branch of the IHF and Vice President of the IHF National Council, said. “Joe has been with the hotels for over 47 years and his enthusiasm and pride in the hospitality industry is still quite evident today.” Loyal, diligent, hardworking, reliable,

honest as well as being a mentor and a team player with a positive outlook are just some of the many qualities Joe possesses. Joe kickstarted his employment with Dromhall under Kay and Neil Randles in 1974 when he commenced working part-time for the up-and-coming wedding venue. His talent and excellence were soon evident and the Randles family offered Joe a full-time position working on the weddings in 1976. Back then, when the hotel closed for the winter months, Joe would travel to various other parts of the country working in hotels always looking to develop his hospitality skills further. Joe also furthered his education in hospitality when he attended the Shannon catering school and learned to carry out the much-coveted silver service. Joe became Abbey Restaurant Manager between 1995 and 2002, meticulously overseeing the running of the restaurant and managing up to four weddings every week at the Dromhall.

“Joe has put many a young waiter and waitress through their paces, while at the same time showing them patience and kindness as they learned the skills and work. Always with an encouraging word and listening ear, you will always be left smiling after an encounter or a chat with Joe.”

FOND MEMORIES

Joe loves the buzz of the hospitality industry and has many fond memories of the lifelong friends and colleagues he has met over the course of this employment in Dromhall and Randles, especially remembering fondly his good friend and chef Tony Lawlor. In 1988 he was part of a group that travelled to the Caymen Islands, waitering for the IHF banquets from November to May, a group which included Bernadette Randles. Joe recalls how he and Bernadette would play pool before dinner in the evenings and confirms Bernadette is a real pool shark! Joe remembers it was Neily Randles

many years earlier that first showed him how to paint and how to hang wallpaper, skills that have become invaluable to Joe especially when in 2002, again during the winter months, when things quietened for the hotels, Joe started in the maintenance department, and the painting and decorating hasn’t stopped since. He is also one of the few employees of the hotel to have worked all through lockdown. Joe has the greatest of admiration for Mrs Kay Randles and says that she would cook the breakfast for all the guests and then ensure that staff all had a good breakfast before they finished their shifts. Joe is never one for the lime light, working diligently and efficiently to get the job done without fuss, and it took a call from Mrs Randles for Joe to agree to put his name forward for the Employee of the Year award. However, the greatest gift Dromhall gave Joe was the chance of meeting his partner in 1990, when she was a waitress also working in the hotel and they have been together ever since. A real Dromhall love story! Joe is also a keen GAA man, travelling all over the country to support the Kerry team and attending many matches of his beloved Legion. “All in the Dromhall are delighted to nominate Joe and he is always a winner in our eyes!”

Kevin faces two of the world's coldest races | By Sean Moriarty Adventurer Kevin Leahy is off to challenge himself in the extreme cold again.

ICE MAN: Kevin Leahy is competing in the Lapland Arctic Ultra this weekend in Sweden - he is pictured here during the Yukon Arctic Ultra in Canada last month.

On Sunday he will start his second Arctic adventure race - Lapland Arctic Ultra, billed as a race “through Europe’s last wilderness”, and this time he's raising funds for ADAPT Kerry Women’s Refuge and Support Services. “We are in awe of Kevin here in ADAPT Kerry, he is an incredible athlete with a fantastic social conscious," Catherine Casey, General Manager of ADAPT, told the Killarney Advertiser. "The fact that he has taken the time to think about and support the women

and children we work with in the middle of his preparations for his 500k Ultra Marathon is such a great and thoughtful achievement. We wish Kevin the very best of luck in this incredible endurance challenge. We wish him every success on this journey." Last month Kevin won the foot-race element of the Yukon Arctic Ultra – billed as the world’s coldest and toughest race - where temperatures dipped as low as -50°C – he was only beaten by a cyclist in Canada. The 500km Överkalix, Sweden-based event is his second race in what Kevin is describing as his 1000kms of chaos and both ice races will feature in a documentary that will be screened at the Kerry

International Film Festival later this year. The race takes place between March 6-16 in the Swedish town, which is about 160km west of the Finnish town of Rovaniemi, the official home of Santa Claus in Lapland. “The body is well rested, I was home for nearly two weeks but it took a few days to get back into Irish time,” Kevin told the Killarney Advertiser from Stockholm as he awaited a connecting flight to Umea which is close to the Arctic Circle. “I am excited and looking forward to it, I am hearing it is not as cold [as Canada] but there has been a lot of snow, so conditions underfoot will be difficult.” To support Kevin and ADAPT visit idonate.ie and search Kevin Leahy.

Marie Meets

Well-known and much loved photographer Marie Carroll-O’Sullivan chats to locals about their news, views and accomplishments in her monthly column ‘Marie Meets’.

Liam reflects on his 45 year career at St Francis’s Special School I had a chance to sit down and have a cuppa with the newly retired Principal of St Francis Special School, Liam Twomey, at Noelle’s Café this week. Liam has dedicated his 45 year career educating children and before he, and the deputy principal, Kathleen Cronin from Muckross, both retired Friday last, he fulfilled three impressive goals. MARIE: Liam I would imagine over almost half a decade as principal, there must have been an enormous amount of change within the education system at St Francis Special School. I had no doubt that Liam had achieved every goal he set himself. I could see from the way he talked about his students that he cared a great deal for their well-being and education. LIAM: “The job as educators is to develop each child’s potential and give the best possible chance to all our students - run the school as if the children were your own. With the correct environment, and the right resources, this enabled us to do so much. I remember the staff at St Francis Special School and I wanted to come up with a motto. We came up with at least 20 but we settled on ‘Enable, Encourage and Enrich’ - three words the staff had engraved on a pair of cufflinks for me as a retirement gift.” MARIE: I was all ears hearing about Liam’s recent accomplishments for the school. LIAM: “Most schools need a bike shelter Marie, but at our school we cater for bicycles, tricycles and a huge selection of all kinds of mobility equipment. We were successful in receiving funding from Green Schools to complete a fantastic Perspex dome to house all forms of student mobility transport a few months ago, which helps hugely with space for other activities and amenities. “We also desperately needed our own means of transport at the school, not the

type of transport to take the students to and from school but more of a social means of transport for excursions. Little things like a trip to SuperValu to buy the ingredients for cookery class or a visit to the park. We needed an appropriately kitted out vehicle to give our students the education of life skills. Two buses are currently been wrapped and fitted so you will soon see them about in the community. We managed to raise €60,000 and achieve this essential facility for St Francis Special School. “It is a happy talent to know how to play” - that is a quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson. It is a basic life skill to play, but some children do not know how to play. We teach our students to play with love, kindness, compassion and understanding. We need to be proactive in setting up a play situation for the

children within the community. The new buses will give us the freedom to do this.”

NEW PLAYGROUND

“The final project we set out to achieve has been five years in the making with thanks everyone who supported, but with great credit to the Leane family in particular. Our brand new playground was completed on Friday last would you believe Marie, on my last day. A vibrant specialised playground that we are so very proud of. If it was only needed by one child at the school Marie, it is needed.” MARIE: I congratulated Liam on his great achievements in recent months and how fulfilling that must be as he retired. LIAM: “Absolutely impossible without

the support of the staff, parents and the community. Kerry people are immensely generous and have taken on St Frances Special School as their own. The services and resources improved only because of this. One of our best sources of funding has been through Cathal Walshe as a beneficiary with the Ring of Kerry annual charity cycle and with Colm Cooper and the Kerry team who involved themselves in fundraising together with many other groups whom we are eternally grateful to. The people of Kerry bought into our vision and entrusted us to deliver and I am very proud to say we have”. MARIE: So if you were to choose a moment or an achievement at St Francis Special School that you are most proud of Liam, what would that be? LIAM: “In 2014 after a long hard battle, we received the most essential and valuable service for our students. We put up a big fight but we finally have a resident nurse at St Francis Special School that we could not do without. Parents can send their children to school with confidence. We no longer have to call them if something seems wrong and we can look after their children for the entire day, keeping them in school to be educated. We are not medical personnel so this was a huge asset for the school.” MARIE: Going forward Liam, now that you’ve handed over to the new Principal Keith O’Brolacháin, what is your plan for retirement? LIAM: “I think it’s better to ‘wear out’ than to ‘rust out’ Marie. The school is in great hands with Keith and I have every faith in the younger generation. I won’t be left idle Marie. I look forward to spending my days doing what I enjoy - travelling, music, carpentry, hiking etc. You only get one crack at life, so you must use your talents to help others but also to enjoy life and help yourself.” MARIE: Thank you Liam on behalf of the community, for all you have done for the students and their families at St Francis Special School.

a fabulous shade of green in the days leading up to and for the week after St Patrick’s Day and the spotlight will fall on Ross Castle, St Mary’s Cathedral, the Franciscan Friary, Killarney Courthouse, Killarney’s Methodist Church, St Mary’s Church of Ireland and the town’s feature statues and monuments. Many local shops, hotels and business premises will all join in the fun by lighting up their buildings and workplaces in the most amazing shades of green. Application forms for the parade can be downloaded from the official festival website www.stpatricksfestivalkillarney.ie or collected from the town hall.

Calls to honour Killarney’s unknown World War 2 heroine | By Sean Moriarty Efforts are being made to honour a Killarney woman who played a key role in opposing the Nazi occupation of France during World War 2. Janie McCarthy was born Bohereen na Goun, New Street, in 1885. She was educated at The Convent of Mercy and went to France in 1910 where she worked as an au pair in Brittany and as a teacher for 15 years in Vannes. She was teaching in Paris when the Germans occupied the city during World War 2 and she immediately joined La Résistance. Her heroic efforts were similar to those on Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty’s efforts in Rome. She specialised

in rescue work and saved many lives during the occupation of France, including members of the allied armies and intelligence services. She was awarded France’s highest award, the Legion d’Honour, the Croix de Guerre and a Croix de la Resistance. The United States of America also honoured her with the Medal of Freedom while Britain awarded her the Tedder Certificate. There are now two separate calls to honour Janie McCarthy in a similar fashion. Mayor Marie Moloney wants to erect a plaque at her reputed birthplace on Bohereen na Goun and eventually name the proposed new inner relief road after her. “There is a huge lack of women being recognised for their humanitarian, community and business

work in Killarney town. I am now asking that a plaque be erected to commemorate the work and the heroism of the late Janie McCarthy,” Cllr Moloney told the Killarney MD meeting. “It is now time for Killarney to honour our own native. In addition to a plaque, I am asking that when the time comes that serious consideration be given to naming the new link road at Bohereen na Goun after Janie McCarthy.” Cllr John O’Donoghue had a similar motion before the meeting. “The purpose of my bringing this motion before you today is to ask that this Council immediately initiate proceedings to honour Janie, and also to launch an appeal to members of the public for further information regarding her life. Michael

Former Direct Provision resident pledges to give back

A former Direct Provision resident living in Killarney, who completed a BA degree, has pledged to give back to the community. Rudo Chitseko hopes her BA achievement will inspire other adults who missed out on an opportunity to pursue third level education to consider signing up to a higher education programme. Rudo studied for a BA in Applied Addiction Studies and Community Development with An Cosán, Ireland’s largest provider of community education, Originally from Zimbabwe she has lived in Ireland since 2015, and signed up to do a BA with An Cosán while she was living in Direct Provision. An Cosán’s degree programmes run online, which means they can be undertaken from anywhere in the country. They are accredited by the Institute of Technology (IT) Carlow and Rudo was delighted to graduate at IT Carlow’s recent Lifelong Learning Conferring Ceremony, which saw 20 adult learners from six counties across Ireland graduate from An Cosán’s two BA programmes. Rudo, who is now studying for a BA in Social Care with Munster Technological University, (MTU), was joined at the graduation by her two proud sisters Rufaro and Samantha. Rudo says that she is a different person after completing the BA with An Cosán. “I am a different person altogether from the person I was,” she said. “My perspective on social issues, like ad-

diction and community development, are different now. I have more understanding of the issues involved. I want to give back to the community by applying the skills I have learned with An Cosán.”

CHALLENGE

Rudo says it was a challenge undertaking the degree course but that the extra supports offered by An Cosán made it easier. “Blended learning was easy for me because I was able to work around the schedule and I was able to do other things, like look for a job,” she said. “There was financial support, academic support and counselling. The friendships, the people I met and the memories I made during my time with An Cosán will last a lifetime.” Rudo encourages other adults who did not have the chance to complete second-level education or go on to third-level education to sign up to a course with An Cosán. “I met people from all backgrounds who left school early or were recovering from different situations. Everything is possible. I am a living testament to that – I never thought I would graduate with a degree, but here I am. So, no matter what your situation, you can have another chance. There is always a way and An Cosán will be there to support you.”

HONOURING HANNAH: Owen O'Shea (left), Historian, Author and Communications Officer with Kerry County Council, at the unveiling of a commemorative plaque to Hannah Carey. The unveiling by Cathaoirleach of Killarney Municipal District, Cllr Marie Moloney, took place at O’Donoghue’s Bar, Tower's Hotel, College Street, formally The Imperial Hotel. Plaque in memory of Hannah Carey unveiled The Cathaoirleach of the Killarney Municipal District, Cllr Marie Moloney, unveiled a plaque in the memory of Hannah Carey, the last person to die during the War of Independence. Hannah Carey was killed outside the Imperial Hotel on College Street a few minutes before noon on July 11 1921, when the truce that ended the war came into effect. The RIC and Black and Tans were firing indiscriminately as they drove down

College Street. Carey was struck by a stray bullet. She was going about her day's work at the Imperial Hotel, now known as the Killarney Towers Hotel. The unveiling took place at O’Donoghue’s Bar, Tower's Hotel, College

Street, on Friday morning. It was hoped to unveil the plaque in July last year to coincide with the centenary but COVID-19 crowd gathering rules at that time put a stop to it. Ms Carey was from the Scart Cross area and Mayor Moloney has been trying to make contact with her descendants. “Local historian Owen O’Shea has helped a lot with this project. So far we have been unable to find a direct descendant but the Careys that live in the area are trying to find out too,” the Mayor told the Killarney Advertiser. “Maybe Friday's event will spark some interest. I first mooted this idea a long time ago – it is so important to mark local history."

Rathmore parade faces cancellation because of ongoing road works | By Sean Moriarty Rathmore’s St Patrick’s Day Parade faces cancellation as a result of ongoing road works in the village.

Students raise funds for mental health charity Transition Year students from St Brigid's Presentation Secondary recently organised a Valentine's fundraiser called 'Galentines Day' just before before Midterm Break for the Kerry Mental Health Association. Students Hayley O'Callaghan, Maeve O'Connor, Clodagh Lucey, Ava O'Neill,

and Olivia Gaffey are pictured presenting a cheque of €505 to John Drummey, General Manager of Kerry Mental Health Association. Great credit is due to the girls for organising a fundraiser for such a worthy cause! TYs who were also involved but are missing from photo include Anna Moynihan and Aishah Aktar Litu.

Locals were planning to run their 'Return to Freedom' parade on March 13 – the Sunday before the big day. However, the committee have taken the decision to cancel the event now rather than wait until everything was in place and cancel at the last minute. An email circulated by organisers on Tuesday night was discussed at Wednesday’s Killarney Municipal District meeting. The meeting was told the village was effectively a construction site and that extra volunteers would be needed to steer the parade around the works. However, volunteers are thin on the ground as a lot of people remain concerned about Coronavirus and don’t want get in-

volved in large groups. “There would be extra resources required and because there are still high numbers impacted by the pandemic, extra resources would have been required,” Cllr Niall Kelleher, who is from the area, told the meeting. There were also concerns raised about insurance in relation to members of the public and street performers congregating near the construction areas. Efforts are going on in the background to save the parade which would have been Rathmore’s 10th and the first one since 2019.

Moriarty's of Killorglin launch new website | By Michelle Crean There's €1,000 store credit to furnish a room of your choice up for grabs - and it's all part of the launch of a new website today (Friday). In response to the demand for a better online presence during the pandemic Moriarty's of Killorglin decided to get to work and build their very first website. And after a false start and a lot of research, web design company Avalanche was chosen and the result can be found on www.moriartysofkillorglin.ie. "Over the last two years living with COVID has been an extreme challenge for customers and business owners alike," Claire Caulfield, Sales and Administration Manager, told the Killarney Advertiser. "It really was a story like none other, a story of uncertainty, most businesses had to get creative and adapt their way of doing business over this period in order to survive and keep going. It [a website] was something that we hadn’t overly considered as people could always visit us, we quickly realised that we had to

adapt to these strange times and from there our website journey began. We have never been so grateful to all our customers over the last two years for the support they have shown us, without this the chances are like a lot of businesses over COVID, we would have had to close our doors. We really do now understand the meaning of 'Shop Local'." And in light of launching the new site they would like to give someone very special a little gift. "We would like to give €1,000 store credit to furnish a room of their choice. All you have to do is go to our website, click on the dedicated link and nominate someone close to you that truly deserves it and leave us a little message as to why you have chosen this person; it can be anyone from a child, parent, grandparent or healthcare worker - you decide! "Again, we would like to thank all our customers from far and wide and Aidan and his team at Avalanche because without these people none of this would be possible. Strength and growth come only through effort and support."

Wedding turns into family reunion! Not only was their special day to celebrate their wedding but it also turned into a huge family reunion after two years of restrictions. Siobhan Farrell and Sean Deinum, who have been together 12 years, were married in The Brehon Hotel in a Civil Ceremony surrounded by 85 guests many of whom had travelled from the UK. Siobhan, daughter of Pat and Karen Farrell, is from Keel, Castlemaine while Sean from Milltown, is son of Mary and Martin Deinum. The couple were married on Thursday, February 17 and said it was the most perfect day after a year of planning. Members of the bridal party who were of great assistance to the couple on the day were Maid of Honour Selina O'Shea, Best Man was Fergal Clifford, and groomsman Liam Burke. The couple's own daughters Riley (3) and Elsie (2) were flowergirls while pageboy duties were carried out by Noel Farrell (4), Siobhan's nephew. "They were amazing and did me proud," Siobhan told the Killarney Advertiser. Siobhan's brother Daniel, his wife Lauren and their children Noah and Holly joined them on the day as well as her nan Carol Pennock from Ipswich. "We had it all in The Brehon, it was really nice. We were lucky, it was raining in the morning and dried during the day and we went to Muckross for photos and rained again just as we were leaving. Then there was a Red warning that

night." She said it was so great to finally be able to catch up with family from abroad. "We had a lot of family from England. It was great to see my nan Carol. I was delighted to have her there. We hadn't seen anybody with COVID. It was like having a massive reunion and everybody was delighted to see watch other." She added that The Brehon went above and beyond for their special day. "The Brehon were just brilliant especially Rachel Murphy. Everything went to plan, I was delighted. I'd do it all again tomorrow. We've been together since school and Sean proposed last February. The Brehon was our place to go to and I always said I'd get married there."

HEALTH & FITNESS Advice - By Brian Foley Brian is available for advice and fitness consultations, Call 087 403 0894 or email info@activate.ie • www.activate.ie

So where does the fat actually go when you lose weight? Following on from last week's article 'Can you really flush the fat away?', this week we take a look at Part 2 and examine where the fat goes as we lose weight. If we eat too much of any macronutrient, it’s converted into fat and stored in fat cells. Out of fat, carbs, and protein, fat is the easiest for the fat cells to hoard, because it’s already in the correct form. But that doesn’t mean that carbs and protein can’t find their way into fat cells. It’s not as easy for the body to do that, but yes: if you eat too much protein, it’s eventually going to be stored as fat. When the fat cells you already have fill up and can’t hold any more fat, new fat cells can grow. It’s also hugely important to note at this point; that fat cells, like any other cells in our bodies, don’t turn into other cells. For all of those people who swear that not exercising for a long time will turn your muscle into fat, that’s never going to happen.

FAT CELLS. MUSCLE CELLS. DIFFERENT THINGS.

When fat cells die, they very quickly get replaced by new ones. That’s because the body likes homeostasis, otherwise known as ‘keeping things the way they are’. In other words, our fat cells don’t go away - ever, not unless they’re surgically removed via liposuction or another procedure. So…what happens to fat when we lose weight? Let’s clarify something right off the bat. We lose fat the same way we gain it; in fractions of ounces at a time, not by

pounds. Just like you won’t wake up the morning after a huge meal with 1kg of new fat gain, you won’t drop kgs of fat at a time. Weight loss can be quick, generally when you have a lot of weight to lose – but for most of us, true fat loss (versus water) is an incremental process. When we lose fat, we literally breathe it out. The fat in our bodies is converted to water and carbon dioxide, and expelled by the lungs and in our urine. As the fat leaves our fat cells, these cells get smaller. But they don’t disappear completely, even when you lose weight. They stand by if and when they need to get bigger again. They’re like balloons, except they fill up with fat instead of air. Deflate, inflate. Deflate, inflate.

TRYING TO LOSE WEIGHT

I get it, it can be impossible to know where to turn, but anyone putting a time limit on it without understanding your unique circumstances is a chancer. But as I said before, people who try to sell you false information and claims are not who you should be looking to for nutrition advice. Losing weight is tough, and it can be very complex. It’s truly often a mix of physical and emotional challenges that are best left to a professional who is able to navigate these things - not a supplement selling ‘coach’, someone on Instagram, or a person who doesn’t have credible nutrition and counselling experience. If you would like some free advice from qualified professionals, visit www.activate.ie/nutrition.

To qualify for Child Benefit, you must be living in Ireland and satisfy the Habitual Residence Condition Q: When should I apply for Child Benefit? You should apply for Child Benefit within 12 months of: The birth of your baby or the month the child became a member of your family or the month your family came to live in Ireland or the date you started working in Ireland if your children are living in another EU country. Q: How do I apply for Child Benefit? If your baby is born in Ireland, you will need to register the birth of your baby within three months of the birth. After you do this, the Department of Social Protection (DSP) will begin a Child Benefit claim for your child. Your new baby will also be given a Personal Public Service (PPS) number. If you are not claiming for any other children and you register the birth of your baby within three months, the Child Benefit Section will begin a Child Benefit claim and send you a partly completed form (CB1). The form will also include information on how you can claim for your new baby online. You can claim online only if you are invited to do so by the DSP. If you are already claiming Child Benefit for another child and you register the birth of your new baby within three months, your new baby will be added to your Child Benefit claim. Payment begins automatically from the month after the birth. The DSP will write to you confirming when payment will start. Q: What is the situation if my child was not born in Ireland? If your child was not born in Ireland, or if you did not register their birth within three months, you must fill in a Child Benefit form (CB1) and send it to the Child Benefit Section. Q: Do I have to reapply when my child reaches 16 years of age? You will need to fill in Child Benefit form CB2 one month before your child’s 16th birthday. You can get the form from your local Social Welfare office or Citizens Information Centre The CB2 form must also be signed and officially stamped by the school or college if your child is in full-time education, or the training organisation if your child is in full-time training, or a doctor if your child has a disability and is unable to financially support themselves.

If you are already getting Child Benefit for this child, the DSP will send you a partly completed application form. You will need to confirm that your child is still in full-time education or full-time training, or has a disability and cannot support themselves. If this is your first time claiming Child Benefit for this child, you should fill in both application forms CB1 and CB2. Q: Is Child Benefit paid during the summer school holidays? If your child is 16 or 17 and in full-time education, you will get Child Benefit until June in each school year. You will not get another payment until they return to full-time education in September. You will get Child Benefit for July and August only if your child returns to education in September. In August, the Child Benefit section will send you an application form. You must complete and return it when your child returns to full-time education in September. When you get your next payment, it will include any arrears (money owed to you). This will include Child Benefit for July and August. If your child turns 18 in July or August and returns to fulltime education in September, you will get any arrears of Child Benefit, up until the month they turn 18. Q: What is the current rate of Child Benefit? Child Benefit is €140 a month for each child. It is paid on the first Tuesday of every month. If you start getting Child Benefit for the first time for a baby, it will be paid at the start of the month after the birth of the child. For twins, Child Benefit is paid at one-and-a-half times the normal monthly rate for each child. For triplets and other multiple births, Child Benefit is paid at double the normal monthly rate for each child. Q: Is Child Benefit taxable? Child Benefit is not taxable. Q: Will I get Child Benefit for my 18-year-old son who is still in fulltime education? No. Child Benefit is not paid for any child aged 18 or older, even if they are in full-time education or training. _________________________________________________ If you need further information about any of the issues mentioned above or you have other questions, you can call a member of the local Citizens Information Service in Kerry on 0818 07 7860. Conquer the Camino for CRY Ireland Former Kerry GAA Football star and CRY Ambassador, Aidan O’Mahony, is set to conquer the Camino De Santiago to raise vital funds for CRY Ireland and is asking the public to join him. CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young) creates awareness of Sudden Cardiac Death (SCD) and inherited cardiac conditions and supports those who have been affected by these conditions through access to free cardiac assessments, bereavement counselling and family support programmes. CRY have also recently launched a new freephone helpline to offer a listening ear to those affected. “The Camino offers an escape, and an opportunity to disconnect," Aidan O’Mahony said. "It can be a great way to connect with nature but also embark on a journey of self-discovery and to re-focus on yourself while raising money for CRY at the same time. In 2019 when I led the team I could just see life-long friendships forming and was so moved by the stories I heard on the trip from those affected by Sudden Cardiac Death and how CRY has helped them. I am thrilled to be taking part again this year and would like for people to join me. The Camino is suitable for almost

anyone and is as rewarding as it is challenging, so if you are looking for a new challenge in 2022, why not conquer the Camino!” Joining Aidan on the trip is CRY Trustee Liam Herlihy who lost his daughter Niamh to sudden cardiac death in 2011. She was only 21 years of age at the

time. Since then Liam and his family are screened regularly at the CRY Centre and do everything they can to support the charity. Aidan and Liam are asking people to join them and help raise funds for CRY. The seven night trip will take place on September 23. For more information or to register interest, please visit cry.ie.

After stuffing it down his trousers Darren Durrant left the True Value Store still using the crutch on his way out of the shop in an attempt to hide the crossbow and fool store security. He got away with it for a few days but police caught up with him in a car park of a nearby store after seeing it all played back on CCTV and identifying him.

Kerry company helps over 10k passengers travel smoothly Kerry company SafeScore headquartered in the RDI Hub in Killorglin, has launched an exciting new partnership with a mainland European hub, Ljubljana International Airport, of the Fraport group. Slovenia’s flagship airport is putting their passenger experience first by ensuring their easy access to clear and useful travel information. Their recent partnership with Irish based travel data company, SafeScore, allows them to keep travellers up-to-date and prepared for their journey. Accessed via a widget on Ljubljana International’s website, SafeScore offers users

everything from testing requirements to vaccine brand acceptance, all condensed into bite-sized paragraphs. This feature, allowing passengers to access information via their phones, laptops, or tablets, has already been used by over 10,000 visitors, and that number is growing daily. Frustrations and delays have become standard scenes witnessed in airports around the world. Complicated documentation requirements add to queue-waiting times, as passengers arrive under-prepared, some have bought and paid for the wrong COVID test, and are denied boarding, while others are faced with last minute quarantine costs they hadn’t anticipated. In Portugal

alone, over 2,500 passengers, and 41 airlines were fined for failing to meet the local PCR testing requirements over December and January. Now, Ljubljana Airport is changing this narrative, and the positive passenger experience reflects this. Speaking about the project, Monika Jelačič, communications expert and the head of the project at the airport said “this is exactly what our passengers need, personalised, simple explanations of the travel restrictions". "Other airports are simply providing a link to a Government website, but this isn’t very helpful. We’ve gone the extra mile with SafeScore and are very pleased with the results."

SafeScore’s CEO, Nicholas Gorman added that “Ljubljana airport is extremely progressive". "They are the first airport on mainland Europe to take this approach and the response has been incredible. We expect fewer passengers to be denied boarding at the airport in the coming months. We’ve solved a very complex problem and personalised it for Ljubljana.”

There were 320 outbreaks in nursing homes this week, with 43 new outbreaks reported in the last week alone. It's hard to believe - but today (Thursday) we celebrated our 49th birthday - that's almost half a century bringing the latest local news to your homes and businesses.

Danny Casey, who established Killarney Advertiser in March 1973.

| By Michelle Crean Woodlawn man Danny Casey at that time had the foresight to see that there was a need for great local news coverage in Killarney and with that in mind he established the Killarney Advertiser in March 1973 - in a newsletter form. That was way back then - and at the time the Killarney Advertiser was the first of its kind - a new concept never before seen in Ireland. Now, almost 50 years on it is a well established weekly news publication with all the latest local news, ads and sports coverage. And to add to the communi-

ty we've also added an impressive new website which is updated daily with local and countywide news to keep you up to date. "We were delighted to have reached this milestone and very proud of what we have achieved to date," Managing Director, Cormac Casey, said. "Reflection on the past 49 years helps us focus on our future milestones. We are excited in exploring new ideas and ways of bringing the story to you each week, but what makes Killarney Advertiser unique is we are all part of the story. I would like to thank each and everyone that have helped tell our story."

IN NUMBERS • 49 years • 28,000 readers weekly • 8,000 copies distributed weekly • 2,546 editions • 175,000 photos • 561,000 deliveries

"It is the beating heart of our community" For the past 49 years the Killarney Advertiser has been a staple in the homes of local people.

Aidan Quirke, General Manager of the Killarney Advertiser.

The goal is to bring the best local news to the community every single week - and now online on our newly revamped website www.killarneyadvertiser.ie every single day.

"It is an honour to be associated with the Killarney Advertiser, which is one of the few constants in Killarney life over the past 49 years," General Manager, Aidan Quirke, said. "It is the beating heart of our community, capturing local news that matters and celebrates all that is good in our locality.

It has come through recessions, inflation, hurricanes and even a global pandemic - but still the Advertiser survives and gets better. Our recent readership survey highlighted the importance of our publication to reader's lives and despite everything, for many people it is still their 'Favourite Friday Read’."

Gardening - By Debby Looney

Debby is available for advice and garden consultations, just call 086 6088156 or email barnhillky@gmail.com

Whitefly can wreak havoc on your plants It is definitely beginning to feel like spring has arrived, despite the recent storms and blast of cold. Nature is programmed to grow when the days get longer, and there is ample evidence of this! Due to the mild January we had, many plants were fooled into thinking it was later in the year, especially roses, and these got a cruel scorching during the hail showers we experienced. If you are new to gardening, do not worry, they will grow out of this. If you have not pruned your roses, it is a good time to do it, then they can divert their energies into strong new growth. It is also a good time to look at your box hedges or plants, if you have them. Box blight, or Cylindrocladium buxicola, has become a problem in recent years, and it is advisable to cut out and burn any sections that are affected. A hard prune back will encourage a regeneration of weaker plants, but if they are too far gone, it is best to take them out altogether. Blight has been ruled the cause of many problems which affect Buxus plants, but in my experience more common issues have been ignored. Ground conditions certainly affect the plants more often than blight – box plants will be yellow and stunted if the ground is too heavy and waterlogged. Similarly, plants will lose their leaves if the ground is too dry, and can do so very suddenly. Unless there is visible new growth you will not notice a Buxus plant wilting if it is dry, which is a regular occurrence in pots, but also in sandy, or poor, soil. The plant will shed its leaves, seemingly for no reason, and blight will be blamed, as opposed to poor watering! Another common problem with box plants is whitefly. This little pest can really wreak

havoc, as it goes unnoticed in the dense growth for a long time. Again, it would seem that your plant is losing its leaves for no reason. However, on closer inspection, you will notice white webbing or white fluffy deposits, which is evidence of whitefly. If the plant is shaken, a cloud of tiny white flies will emerge. These are quite difficult to control (similarly in houseplants, where they are prevalent), and a systemic pesticide is often best, as opposed to a topical spray.

WATCH OUT FOR WIND SCORCH

Wind scorch will also cause your plants to look poorly turning them a shade of ochre which looks very similar to underfed plants. The plant will grow out of this discolouration if it is sheltered, or fed. If these problems have been eliminated, and it is blight you are dealing with, a product such as Provanto Fungus Fighter is an option, as well as quite a few organic sprays which are now available. The symptoms to look out for are brown/black spots or lesions on the leaves, which then become dry and fall off. The spores remain viable for five years, so good hygiene and strong plants are key. Pruning your plants on a very dry day is preferable as blight spreads in humid conditions. Keeping tools clean and sterilised is also advisable. Clean up any dead leaves at this time of year and feed with a high quality slow release fertiliser, such as the specialist ‘Topbuxus’ products which are formulated by Buxus nurseries themselves. Avoid tomato food, a general shrub fertiliser will have a better range of nutrients. Apply a good layer of mulch around your plants to keep them moist in the summer.

Daniel's back and planning live Killarney shows He’s back! Daniel O’Donnell will perform his first live concerts in Ireland since 2020 after they were cancelled due to COVID. And dates for 2022 will include the INEC Killarney from August 25 to 28. Loyal fans are delighted that the concerts, originally scheduled for 2020, can now go ahead. Most tickets were snapped up when they originally went on sale, with the majority of Daniel fans holding onto their tickets when the shows were rescheduled but management have announced that they are releasing a small number of additional seats in order to cater for the high demand! “I have so missed our live shows, there is nothing like performing to a live audience. I, and all the band and crew, are so looking forward to getting back on the road again in Ireland this year. It is such good news that life is returning to normal so we can all get back together again safely. These shows will be incredibly special, I cannot wait to see you all.” 2021 was a special year for Daniel as he celebrated his 60th birthday, marking it with a brand-new album ‘Daniel O’Donnell 60’ featuring 13 tracks of new record-

ings. Fans will remember his brand-new, feel-good single ‘Down at the Lah De Dah’, also released last year - with a video that went viral and put a massive smile on everyone’s face. Daniel’s recording career has now spanned 40 years and in 2021, Daniel broke his own world record by becoming the first recording artist to chart at least one new album each year in the UK Artist Albums Chart for 34 consecutive years. Lewis Road historian charts history of Killorglin | By Sean Moriarty A Killarney historian has devised a walk in Killorglin that will link all of the town’s historical sites. Thomas ‘Totty’ O’Sullivan from Lewis Road is an author, illustrator, musician and storyteller. Three years ago he published a book entitled ‘Kerry Dreamtime’ – a collection of told and untold stories, photos, and poems from the McGillicuddy Reeks. His latest project is a loop walk that starts and finishes in Killorglin’s Fair Field. It follows an older walking route to Ballykissane Pier, continues along the foreshore, past Reen Point to Knocklyne/ Sunhill and back to Killorglin Town. Items of interest along the route include The Ballykissane Tragedy, Killorglin Rowing Club’s history, St James’ Church, the old Railway Bridge and many more sights of historical importance. The walk also includes scenic views of the Sliabh Mish and McGillicuddy Reeks mountain ranges, Dingle Bay and Castlemaine Harbour. “There is a weighty tome of history associated with this walk, breathtaking

The research behind the walks took over six years to compile. “This is a valuable amenity primarily for local residents and townspeople and obviously for tourism and visitors to Killorglin,” he added.

SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL Language exemptions can impact college applications Try electrolysis for permanent hair removal

Beauty - By Jill O'Donoghue

Jill is available for advice and beauty consultations, at Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio. Call 064 6632966

Language exemptions are granted to students with specific learning difficulties affecting language acquisition and this can happen in primary or secondary school.

Male grooming is becoming the norm as excess hair is now one of the most common concerns. Some of the treatment areas are; eyebrows, especially the unibrow, beard sculpting to eliminate shaving on the cheeks and neck, neck line to treat irritations and ingrown hairs, ear hair, back hair and shoulder hair. Repeated tweezing and shaving, plus the fact that clothes are worn tight over some areas, can contribute to hair being trapped beneath the skin. Belts over the lower back can cause serious irritation and men don't realise there's a simple solution if it's caught in time. It may be that they are getting a spot in the area continually and an ingrown hair is causing a build-up of serum and this could eventually lead to surgery if left untreated. It's far too common for men to suffer ingrown hair on their necks and lower back. This is easily remedied with a few sessions of electrolysis and will alleviate any irritation they might have been experiencing. This can happen at

any age, male or female. Based on a consultation, we will tailor a treatment plan that will address specific areas of concern. Electrolysis is the only method of hair removal that is FDA approved. We use the blend technique with the most up to date tech, Apilus branded machine. It's also a common issue that woman of all ages have been putting up with such as facial hair. This can be often caused by hormonal changes such as menopause and hormonal imbalances such as PCOS. Women with excess facial hair resort to temporary methods such as shaving, tweezing, threading, waxing or sugaring. Electrolysis is the only permanent method of unwanted hair. If you're not someone who cheerfully puts up with a time consuming hair maintenance routine, you've found the permanent hair removal solution right here. Book a consultation and see how it can work for you. • To make a booking or to find out more, call Jill on 064 6632966.

Exemptions for college entry may also be granted to students who were born outside of Ireland or had a minimum amount of their education abroad. See www.nui.ie for details. There can be some confusion around how language exemptions impact on college applications and it is very important that students and parents are clear on what they need to do at this stage to make sure that the CAO is aware of an exemption. Every year there are applicants who are disappointed on the day of the CAO First Round offers because they don’t receive an offer in spite having the required points. One of the reasons why this can happen is because an applicant has forgotten to process their language exemption. They often assume that having an exemption from language in school means that colleges and universities are aware of that, but this is not the case. Some, but not all, Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) have general entry requirements regarding languages other than English and they are not the same in all colleges and universities. It is important to note that the language requirements are not in place for all programmes in these HEIs so it is really imperative that applicants check the general entry requirements and specific course requirements for the programmes they are applying for. There are four universities that come under the National University of Ireland (NUI); UCC, UCD, Maynooth University and NUI Galway, as well as member institutions which include Royal College of Surgeons, St Angela’s College, Sligo and National College of Art and Design. To apply for exemptions from any NUI college you need to complete the rel-

evant form which can be downloaded from www.nui.ie and post it back to NUI. It is recommended that you do this 21 days after opening your CAO account but if you haven’t done so, it is not too late. CAO are notified of the exemption by NUI and it should appear on your CAO account one month after being processed. To apply for language exemptions for courses in Trinity College (TCD), UL or Mary Immaculate College, you will need to contact the relevant Admissions Offices directly. Exemptions for TCD should appear on your CAO account by the end of May. You will receive a Statement of Application Record in May from CAO instructing you to check all your details including language exemptions, which are recorded in the Qualifications and Assessments section. If it is not there you will need to contact CAO immediately. CAO do not record exemptions granted by UL or Mary I so contact their Admission Offices directly for guidance.

Kia EV6 named as European Car of the Year The all-new Kia EV6 has been named the European 2022 Car of the Year in the prestigious Car of the Year (COTY) awards. The innovative all-electric crossover was voted the overall winner by a 59-strong jury consisting of highly respected motoring journalists from 22 European countries. The Kia EV6 was initially listed for consideration for the top award alongside over 60 models that launched during 2021. In November, the COTY jury whittled this longlist down to a seven-strong shortlist, six of which were electric vehicles (EVs), further demonstrating the growing importance of electric vehicles to consumers as society transitions towards a new mobility future.

“This is the first time a Korean brand has won this accolade,” said Kia Ireland’s Head of Marketing Aidan Doyle. “This comes just two weeks after the EV6 lifted the Irish Car of the Year award.” The Kia EV6 received a total of 279 points to claim victory and be crowned 2022 Car of the Year, followed by the Renault Mégane E-Tech (265 points), Hyundai IONIQ 5 (261 points), Peugeot 308 (191 points), Škoda Enyaq iV (185 points), Ford Mustang Mach-E (150 points) and Cupra Born (144 points). "It's a nice surprise to see the Kia EV6 receive this award. It was about time that the brand and the group were rewarded as they have worked so hard on this car. Kia's pace of progress is really impressive,” said Frank Janssen, President, the Car of the Year jury.

Over the long term, the stock market news will be good. In the 20th century, the United States endured two world wars and other traumatic and expensive military conflicts; the Depression; a dozen or so recessions and financial panics; oil shocks; a flu epidemic; and the resignation of a disgraced president. Yet the Dow rose from 66 to 11,497 – Warren Buffet The truth is, the pending geopolitical events are impossible to predict with certainty. As always, the most practical form of defence against these events is diversification across multiple asset classes, market-cap sizes, regions and sectors. With that said, it helps to analyse how similar past events have impacted markets. While international conflict is tragic for all involved, it does not guarantee economic ruin. For example: During the Korean War (1950 to 1953), US stocks fell at first, then recovered as normality resumed, rising

Defence stocks, commodities, especially oil and precious metal such as gold will likely move higher while growth and transport stocks are likely to be negatively impacted over the short-term. For now, all eyes will be on oil movements. Russia’s outsized role as an oil and gas exporter makes this an area of extreme focus, given the inflationary impact that rising oil prices will have on the broader economy.

In both Gulf Wars (1990 and 2003), the market fell 10% initially but had recovered within a year. Market corrections are also nothing new. Remember, stock market losses are a regular occurrence. Since 1950, the S&P 500 has had an average drawdown from peak-to-trough of 13.6% over a calendar year. And yet, markets have continued to grind higher over time. Even during the S&P 500's nearly 11-year bull run from March 2009 to February 2020, the S&P 500 witnessed five corrections. The pullbacks were prompted by concerns about everything from interest rates to trade wars to a European debt crisis. The volatility you get from stocks is the

CLIFFORD

In loving memory of Mick Clifford late of Crohane, Fossa who passed away on 2nd January 2021. As we fondly remember Mick on his birthday anniversary, we would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who helped and supported Mick and us during his illness, funeral and over the past year. Mick’s final days were made comfortable in the excellent care of Dr Margaret Clifford and all the staff of the Palliative Care Unit. To the Palliative Care and district nurses who kept Mick at home as long as possible, our deepest gratitude. To Kathleen Coffey who called daily to administer medication but more importantly, to reassure Mick, we are forever grateful. To the staff of O’Sullivan’s Chemist, thank you. We extend our sincere gratitude to all those who phoned, sent mass cards and messages of condolences, sympathised and donated to Palliative Care Unit UHK. To the members of Castlerosse Golf Club and Mick’s golfing buddies who raised €4,250 for the Palliative Care Unit in Mick’s memory and especially his friend and golf partner Steve Shine for organising the fundraiser, thank you. To all the neighbours, family and friends who lined the road to take Mick for his final journey from Crohane to tranquil Aghadoe, Thank you. Finally a word of thanks to Fr John Ahern for looking after Mick’s pastoral needs and to O’Shea’s undertakers for their professionalism. Rejuvenated Lakers and improving Cougars to meet in all-Killarney derby Killarney's two men's National League teams will go head-to-head on Saturday night as Scotts Lakers and the Killarney Cougars clash at the Killarney Sports & Leisure Centre. The Lakers are enjoying a mid-to-lateseason revival and after last weekend's victory over the Limerick Sport Eagles, they currently find themselves in fifth place in the Southern Conference. The top four teams will qualify for the playoffs so Jarlath Lee's team are very much in the hunt, but time is running out. Saturday night's meeting with their near neighbours will be their second last game of the regular season. The fact that the fourth placed team, the Limerick Celtics, have two games in hand is also a

cause for concern. All the Lakers can do is win their remaining fixtures and hope for the best. Reflecting on their most recent victory, coach Jarlath Lee said his team performed well on both sides of the ball. "We shot the ball really well and we have to give special praise to the team’s defence for keeping one of the league’s top scorers (Manny Payton) to just 17 points. “David Gleeson was a huge loss for us but the bench really stepped up. Jamie O’Sullivan, Senan O’Leary, Paul Clarke and Marko Benčić all played their part when we really needed them. If I was to be hyper-critical, I'd say we missed a few easy lay-ups, but overall you'd have to be very happy.”

Lee confirmed that Gleeson should be fit again for Saturday’s derby match-up.

COUGARS

The Cougars, meanwhile, are hoping to finish off their debut season at National League level with a flourish. They waited a long time for their first win of the campaign but they were impressive in a pair of recent home wins. Another positive result in their final two fixtures could see them overtake WIT at the foot of the table. Head coach Ignas Sijanas told the Killarney Advertiser he is looking forward to the challenge that the Lakers are going to bring. “These kinds of games are always excit-

ing. Derbies are fun. They bring the best out of the players. “The Lakers are a good team, very well-balanced. At the moment they are playing nice basketball. The last game against the Eagles showed how strong they are. Obviously, we are going in as underdogs but we will try to come up with some plans and some ideas. We’ll try to bring a good fight. “We’re going to bring a different team to the one we had in the first derby game (the Lakers beat the Cougars 89-66 in December). I think we have definitely improved, especially after the two recent wins. That has given us more confidence. “The season was a big rollercoaster but I’m happy. It’s better to have a season like this for the first season. It shows the weaknesses, it shows the strengths, it helps you to see what the team looks like in general. We lost some players. We brought some new players in. It has been a long process for us with some bad moments, but also with some good moments. In general, it was a very positive season in terms of growth and learning and finding our identity as a team. “The young guys made a step forward, some players built their confidence, and we got Rich Dunham in. I hope we can keep him for next season. And we know exactly what we need to add to look even better next year.” MATCH-UP: Emillian Grudov of Scotts Lakers and Nathan Cox of the Killarney Cougars. Introducing Kerry’s fastest ever woman Killarney sprinter Sarah Leahy talks to Adam Moynihan about finding her feet at the highest level of Irish athletics Solo athletes aren’t always noted for their humility, at least not outwardly. Operating as an individual requires a lot of self-belief. When you only have yourself to depend on, you need to have absolute faith in your abilities at all times. While those involved in team sports tend to deflect praise and extol the talents of their colleagues, solo sportspeople project a type of confidence that can sometimes border on arrogance. We often hear pro boxers, golfers, and track and field stars banging on about how great they are (the best, even), conveniently ignoring any statistics or rankings that might suggest otherwise. But how about an athlete who’s the best without even knowing it? This week I had the honour of inadvertently informing Sarah Leahy that she is the fastest Kerry woman of all time. Yes, you read that right. The 22-year-old Killarney sprinter was caught off guard when I asked her how it felt to be the county’s fastest ever woman. Speaking via phone from a quiet corner of UL’s Glucksman Library, Leahy sounded genuinely surprised when I clarified that her Killarney Valley AC clubmate Jerry Griffin had provided the information. “Oh… I hope he did the research on that, because I didn’t! “I sometimes forget about things like that. I know I’m there for the club and I have my family and other people there supporting me, and it’s kind of a big deal. But I feel like I’m just there to run and enjoy it.” She certainly enjoyed her most recent outing, the National Indoor Championships in Abbottstown. Having taken silver in the 200m on Saturday, she capped a fine weekend for local athletics by securing bronze in the 60m on Sunday. Fellow Killarney Valley competitors Jordan Lee and Ciara Kennelly both came sixth in their high jump competitions while the unstoppable David Kenny of Farranfore Maine Valley won gold in the 5,000m walk. Kenny also walked a personal best time of 19.35.37. As far Leahy was concerned, was there also a tinge of disappointment at how things played out? She flew out of the traps to lead the 200m before being overtaken by Sharlene Mawdsley, and she thought she had finished second

in the 60m only for the result to be scrapped due to uncertainty over the start. Leahy didn’t have her best start in the re-run but she recovered to finish third behind Molly Scott and Lauren Roy. Scott ran a sensational national record of 7.19. “On Monday I was definitely emotionally drained to be honest. I didn’t have any emotions because I was so tired,” the engineering student reflected. “Overall, I was very happy with how things went. But also I felt I had nothing to lose going into it – until I started running. At one point in the 200m I was winning, but I finished second. “Unfortunately I don’t feel like I did myself justice in the second [60m] race. I didn’t run as well. I didn’t get out of the blocks fast enough. I ended up coming third, just about. I was a bit behind but I managed to claw my way back up there. I wanted to get to my PB of 7.39 again but I got 7.46, which was slightly slower than my time in the heat earlier that day. “When I go running it’s more about getting PBs for me. I know that there is definitely more in me, so I was a little bit disappointed that it wasn’t the day for that. But at the same time, we’re there to win medals and I guess I did that. I had never won a senior medal before, so I’m delighted. “The standard of competition was really high. Not just in my races but in all the races. There were loads of Olympians in the men’s and women’s 400m, and obviously Molly Scott got a national record again. It was a mad standard and a fantastic experience.” Leahy had previously been juggling athletics with GAA commitments but with all of her focus now on sprinting, her progress has been remarkable. In addition to being the fastest Kerry woman ever, she is the 14th fastest Irish woman over 60m ever and 12th fastest over 200m. Her coaches say they are impressed with her progress but not one bit surprised. She had been singled out as a major prospect as a teenager. Now that she is “all in” on her chosen disciplines, they are confident that she can take it to the next level and compete internationally. For Leahy’s part, she feels as though is she is “slowly but surely” finding her feet at the highest level of Irish athletics. Not

so long ago she was the new girl. Now she’s starting to feel like she belongs. “It used to be a lot more intimidating but now a lot of the girls talk to me. I’m kind of getting to know more people and they’re all very nice, and very chatty. Some people tend to be very focused all day but I feel like I do better when I’m having a laugh and making friends. “I was a bit starstruck when I saw Phil Healy. I haven’t got the courage to talk to her yet! But in general I’ve learned to deal with it more. I just enjoy it, put on a smile and chat away.” Next on the agenda is the outdoor sea-

son, during which Leahy will be gunning for gold in the 100m and 200m. “I’m very excited about the outdoor season. I think I should be much faster after the training I’ve been doing. I’m much stronger than I used to be; I used to fade a lot. That shouldn’t happen this year.” There’s that self-belief we talked about earlier. All the top athletes know full well that as important as it is to be humble, that will only take you so far. Leahy has more than earned the right to project confidence. She is the fastest Kerry woman ever, after all. And now she knows it.

Kerry take advantage of Farney’s open goal Eamonn Fitzgerald reflects on Kerry’s comfortable victory over Monaghan Rory Beggan should have known better at Inniskeen on Sunday last, where Kerry defeated Monaghan 1-12 to 3-14 to remain unbeaten and joint top of the Allianz Football League table on seven points from four games. In the modern game so many goalkeepers at club and county levels leave their station and sally up-field to join in with the attack. Beggan is one such player, but he got his comeuppance at Inniskeen on Sunday last. Kerry used the strong wind advantage in that second half. A great move involving an accurate kicked pass by Seánie O’Shea to Paudie Clifford, who instinctively picked out his younger brother David, coughed up goal No. 1. He doesn’t miss. Within four minutes, Fossa’s answer to Messi struck once again. All of the Monaghan defence had moved out, including goalkeeper Beggan who was beyond the halfway line. An attempted pass from Darren Hughes to Beggan was intercepted by O’Shea and Kerry made the most of the error. There were just two players inside the Monaghan part of the field. A direct, quick, accurate ball left Kieran Duff stranded 1 v 1 with David Clifford. There could only be one winner. The Fossa All-Star sent the ball into an empty net, no handling just a Messi-like kick. It wasn’t easy. A player of lesser class would not have scored from the narrowest of angles and just inches from the end line, but David had learned on the home lawn in Fossa. The garsún’s teacher was older brother Paudie, who scored many a fine goal for Killarney Athletic before he switched codes. Thanks be to God say the grateful GAA fans.

GOALKEEPING POET

I am sure that Rory Beggan has heard of Inniskeen native and world-famous poet Patrick Kavanagh. Not alone was he a great poet but he was also the goalkeeper for the local Inniskeen Grattan club, better known by the nickname of ‘Muckers’. Beggan wasn’t the first Monaghan goalkeeper to leave his goal unattended. In the 1930 Monaghan SFC final played at Carrickmacross, the Inniskeen goalkeeper was Patrick Kavanagh. During the game against Latton, some of the spectators didn’t agree with the referee’s decisions, so they invaded the pitch. At that time pitches weren’t fenced in so the rival sup-

porters engaged in the inevitable hell for leather battle. The shemozzle continued and, since it was a warm day, Kavanagh left his goal and made off a huckster who was selling ice cream. The Inniskeen keeper was quite a cranky man and didn’t make it back to his goal before the game had restarted after the unscheduled 15-minute fracas. It was akin to the Paddy Cullen scenario many years later. Goal for Kerry in the 1978 All–Ireland final; goal for Latton in the 1930 Monaghan county final. A high ball was landed into the Inniskeen goal and a Latton forward rose highest to fist the ball into an empty net. Kavanagh was AWOL and was blamed for neglecting his duties because of his love of ice cream. I often wondered if that was one of the reasons why he left his “stony grey soil of Monaghan”. In later years he conjured up that wonderful image, accusing his native county of “burgling” his “bank of youth”. He did continue with Inniskeen for one more year as captain and a busy officer as secretary and treasurer. However, when a new chairman came in at a later stage, the first thing he did was to get rid of Kavanagh, alleging that the former keeper was inclined to dip into the club funds to pay for his cigarettes.

BRILLIANT FORWARDS

The Kerry full forward line of the Clifford brothers and Tony Brosnan wrecked any chance of Monaghan victory. They scored 3-8 whereas the whole Monaghan team didn’t accumulate that score between them. In the post match press-briefing, Kerry manager Jack O’Connor was fulsome in his praise for Tony Brosnan in particular. "Very happy with Tony Brosnan, his first outing with us, his first start with us. He was very sharp and kicked three points, especially one into the gale there in the first half from the wrong side. That was a great score, and I’m just hoping that will stand to Tony now and he’ll drive on from there. "It was great to give a start to Tony. He’s a very exciting young player and has threatened many times in the past to explode on the scene, but to come up here and three great scores is great going.” Next up Kerry will be at home to Mayo under lights in Tralee on Saturday, March 12.

Sem’s date with destiny St Brendan’s College will be at Croke Park for the All-Ireland Colleges football final on St Patrick’s Day as they bid for their fifth ever Hogan Cup title. In the decider they will meet Naas CBS, who easily beat St Jarlath’s Tuam in their semi-final on Saturday last. The Sem did not have it easy against St Mary’s Magherafelt, but they made the long journey to Mayo worthwhile by carving out a well-deserved, if hard-won, victory (1-10 to 1-8). They were behind for most of the game and the sides were level late on, but points from John Kelleher and team captain Cian McMahon booked their passage to Croker. The Sem’s management will be very pleased by the win, but more importantly by the way the team played. The defence deserves special mention; they were superb and tackled well without fouling.

They learned from the Munster final when they were coasting to victory only to concede too many scoreable frees. The Sem won by five points that day but it could have been double that. The tough games they played have steeled their resolve. On the road to Croker they have had to be very resilient. The game against Coláiste na Sceilge and others were great learning curves. They were lucky to win, but they won. The high perch of Knock Shrine is just a few kilometres from where the Connacht Council have done wonders with a magnificent indoor dome playing field

and several pitches outside. The GAA Congress was in session in the dome, so the college game was played on one for the outer pitches. The Sem faced into the wind in the first half and were quite happy to retire at half-time just two points adrift, 0-8 to 0-6. With the advantage of the elements, one expected Brendan's to kick on in the second half. They did just that and were rewarded in the 37th minute when the two Cians combined for a crucial score. Cian Foley did well to cross the ball and team captain Cian McMahon latched on to this opportunity, scoring a tonic goal. Now they would build on that 1-4 to 0-6 lead. Not so, as a very good St Mary’s side, stung by that goal, worked their way upfield against the breeze. Tom Shivvers struck for their goal against the run of play. That may well have given the shivers

to the Brendan’s supporters who made the long journey to Knock. Some stopped off at the Shrine to light candles and now was the time to call in the favours. This was going to be no cakewalk and Brendan’s fought back. The introduction of Luke Crowley in the 45th minute proved crucial. The versatile Glenflesk youngster, who is versatile in many sports, kicked two great points on this his return from injury. The genes are very good. His father and grandfather starred for Kerry in the past. Fellow Glenflesk clubman Killian O’Sullivan also scored two valuable points. All square but who was going to buckle under pressure? Not the Sem, hardened from big challenges along the way. They added the two final points through Kelleher and McMahon. The latter was the top scorer with 1-2, all from play.

VICTORY FOR HURLERS AND LADIES Great news from Carlow last weekend where Stephen Molumphy continues his good form managing the Kerry hurlers. They defeated Carlow and now it’s two wins out of three. He will be keen to improve

upon that record with another win against Meath at Austin Stack Park on Sunday next. The Kerry ladies overcame the elements at Doonbeg to beat Clare 1-13 to 0-9. You

guessed it, who else but Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh to steal the show by scoring 1-7 a (1-4 of that from play). She deceived the Clare keeper for her lobbed goal. If Seánie O’Shea can do it, so can Louise. Great to see local women on the start-

ing 15: Kayleigh Cronin (Dr Crokes), Emma Costello (Firies), Danielle O’Leary (Rathmore), Laoise Coughlan (Rathmore), and the subs who came on Anna Clifford (Fossa), Keri Ann Hanrahan (Legion).

SNOW: Paul Nagle and Craig Breen competing in Rally Sweden last weekend. The Umea based rally is the World Rally Championship’s only all-snow rally. Photo: Jaanus Ree/Red Bull Content Pool.

Rally Sweden to forget for Breen and Nagle Setting the fastest time on stage 12 of Rally Sweden was the highlight of an otherwise weekend to forget for Paul Nagle and Craig Breen. The M-Sport Ford World Rally Team members were contesting the second round of the World Rally Championship last weekend – the season’s only all-snow rally. Collisions with two unforgiving Swedish snowbanks on Friday all but ended their hopes. The team salvaged one World Championship point on Sunday’s Wolf Power Stage but dropped from fourth to seventh in the championship standings.

"A relatively disappointing weekend for us in Sweden,” Breen said. “After the great result in Monte we were looking to build on it again and get some more good points for the championship. “Unfortunately, the error we made on Friday put out any hopes of getting a good result, but nonetheless, we improved as the weekend went on; we had a stage win on Saturday which is great, our first stage win in the team.”

St Brendan’s launch football fundraiser | By Sean Moriarty St Brendan’s College has launched a fundraiser to help offset expenses it will face in the Hogan Cup All-Ireland schools final. The college has qualified for its fifth Hogan Cup final in the past 15 years – see main story on previous page. “Supporting a colleges senior football panel to achieve at this level and undertaking to give the 36 young men the best possible opportunities to prepare properly does come with many challenges, some of them financial," said trainer Kevin Cronin. "Our school has always had a close rela-

tionship with the community in Killarney and East Kerry and we have been supported in our preparation over the years by the families and staff in the school, by past pupils and by the business community. In setting up this iDonate page we are reaching out in search of any contribution towards the cost of buses, meals, accommodation for the St Brendan’s College Senior Football Panel 2022. We understand that these are challenging times and that post-pandemic Ireland is a difficult place for us all. Nevertheless we also know that the panel and management would be delighted with your good will and messages of support.” To support go to idonate.ie 'St Brendan's Killarney Hogan Cup Final Fundraiser.

Spa GAA club launch inaugural Killarney 7s The cream of the crop in GAA club football will descend upon Killarney this June Bank Holiday weekend for the inaugural Killarney Club 7s. Hosted by Spa GAA club at their base in Tullig on the outskirts of town, the exciting seven-a-side tournament will feature the likes of Na Fianna of Dublin, Éire Óg of Cork and Clonmel Commercials of Tipperary, as well as local clubs Legion, Dr Crokes, Austin Stacks and Dingle. Men’s and women’s teams will compete over two days of action with players and supporters treated to food, drink and music in the Rockshore Tent. Rockshore have come on board as the event’s title sponsors. Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser this week, Killarney Club 7s committee member Shane Cronin explained how the idea for the tournament came about. “The club formed a fundraising commit-

tee last summer due to COVID and the lack of funds coming in over the previous 18 months. The first meeting was literally just coming up with possible ways we could fundraise and make the club that bit healthier. We came up with the idea of an All-Ireland seven-a-side tournament for GAA clubs during the intercounty season, so that clubs wouldn’t be caught playing championship and could possibly travel. “Then we made up a proposal and thought of possible sponsors. First on our list was Diageo and Rockshore and luckily they loved the idea, and it went from there. “Things became quiet then due to another COVID outbreak and rising cases

around November/December. It wasn’t looking likely at this point but when restrictions eased in January again, we had a meeting and we decided that we would plough on with the idea. Thankfully, Diageo were still interested.”

It promises to be an action-packed weekend that is sure to draw a large crowd to the town. For more information visit killarneyclub7s.ie or follow ‘Killarney Club 7s’ on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram.
