PAGE SIX Shock and sadness greeted the unexpected death of Killarney Basketball legend Paudie O’Connor in Las Vegas this week. Eamonn Keogh looks back at the sporting career of a man who has been described as the greatest Irish basketball player of all time

Killarney Remembers “The Greatest Irish Basketballer Ever” 1951 was a momentous year for Killarney basketball. Local historians recall that the very first game of basketball took place in November of that year in the old Killarney Town Hall featuring the likes of Eamon O’Donoghue, Ben Campion, Johnny Culloty and Paddy Culligan. September 1951 was also a very significant month that year as it marked the birth of Paudie O’Connor, a basketball player who went on to revolutionise the game in Ireland and set exceedingly high standards for everybody else to follow. The son of Dan and Mai O’Connor, Paudie grew up at No. 1 O’Sullivan’s Place, Killarney. Former neighbour and friend Weeshie Fogarty recalls an interesting story about the small green area in the neighbourhood with one timber telegraph pole in the centre where Paudie and his brothers Séamie, Mike and Benny erected a hoop on the pole. Paudie climbed on top of his brother Séamie’s shoulders and attached the hoop to the pole and it was there that he honed and polished his amazing shooting and scoring skills. Facilities improved when St Mary’s Parish Hall opened with a proper indoor basketball hall and a young Paudie O’Connor soon emerged as the most exciting talent on the Killarney and Kerry basketball circuit during the 1960s. In his late teens and early twenties, Paudie spent his summers in the USA attending basketball camps under the guidance of former NBA player ‘Pistol’ Pete Maravich and American coaching legend Dean Smith. Paudie won various county championships with the Busby Babes in the late 1960s and in 1969 he starred for the he Kerry senior and minor basketball teams that won All-Ireland titles. During the 1970s, St Vincent’s Killarney was the main team in town and began to establish themselves as one of the top sides in Ireland; they consistently challenged for honours in national tournaments and leagues. Following Paudie’s death this week, Séamie O’Connor recalled some of his proudest moments playing alongside his brother on the basketball court. One was on a St Vincent’s team that defied all the odds to beat a star-studded US Navy team at a tournament in Sligo in 1972. Killarney were led by Lawrence O’Donoghue (RIP), Seán Coleman (RIP), Paudie and Séamie O’Connor, Billy Healy, Tom Looney, Tim Regan, Rory O’Flaherty and James O’Connor. Another fond memory that Séamie recalled was when the Kerry senior basketball team defeated Cork in the 1974 Munster final in the Parochial Hall with three O’Connor brothers lining out for Kerry. The late Cork Examiner photographer and Killarney native Louis MacMonagle captured the historic photo after the match of Séamie, Paudie and Mike O’Connor. In Irish basketball circles, Paudie O’Connor is best remembered for leading the Killarney initiative that brought the first professional American players to play in the national league. Despite objections from the governing body and other clubs across the country, the first American basketballers, Greg Hugely and Cornel Benford, arrived in Killarney in September 1979. Two months later, Brian Ulmer replaced Benford and St Vin-

cent’s clinched the National League and Championship titles in the 1979-80 season. By this time Killarney were playing their home games under the Gleneagle banner in the new St Brendan’s Gym and were also participating in the Federation Cup, a competition for British and Irish clubs. Crowds of 800 people squeezed into St Brendan’s at the time to see Killarney dominate and bring Irish basketball to a new level in the early 1980s. In the 1981-82 season, Killarney won the double and were agonisingly pipped by Doncaster in a thrilling Federation Cup final in the Sem. Paudie retired in 1986 and moved to the USA shortly afterwards with his American-born wife Marty and daughter Morgan. A few years in New York was followed by a move to Las Vegas where Paudie set up O’Connor Golf Tourism, bringing high profile tours to Ireland and to Scotland every year. Basketball legend Michael Jordan was his most famous client to come here on a golfing trip in May 1999. Basketball was his true sporting love but the 6’4” Killarney man was also an outstanding football talent with Dr Crokes and was tipped by many to make Mick O’Dwyer’s Kerry golden years squad during the mid 1970s. Paudie, however, was different to many of those around him. He felt as though others were merely thinking in terms of All-Irelands whereas he was thinking of the international and global stage. He went on to win over 100 senior caps for Ireland as well as captaining his country. He played in three pre-Olympics qualifying tournaments and also had the distinction of being selected as the only Irish player ever on a European All-Star five in 1977. Paudie never lost touch with Killarney, returning home once or twice every year. His brother Séamie confirmed that he was due to return again in the next few weeks.

During their regular phone conversations, Paudie loved to hear the sporting news from Killarney, particularly the exploits of Dr Crokes and Kerry while he also had a keen interest in the fortunes of Scotts Lakers, who were captained by his nephew Philip this season. In Kieran Shannon’s book ‘Hanging from the Rafters’, which documents the golden age of Irish basketball, former Irish Basketball chief administrator Noel Keating described Paudie as the “greatest Irish basketball player ever”. Paudie, who didn’t smoke or drink, was described by his lifelong friend John Keogh as someone ahead of his time, a proud Killarney man and a wonderful ambassador for Killarney and Kerry. Outside his sporting interests, Paudie was also well known in Killarney as the youngest ever Mayor and member of Killarney Urban District Council from 1974 to 1985, serving as Chairman in 1978, 1980, 1982 and 1984. He was also a Kerry County Councillor from 1979 to 1985. Paudie O’Connor’s funeral is due to take place in Las Vegas on Monday May 7. A memorial service will take place in Killarney at a later date. Predeceased by his parents Mai (1987) and Dan (2001), and brother Benny (2009), Paudie is survived by his daughter Morgan O’Connor Marro and her mother Marty, brothers Séamie and Mike, grandson Luciano, son-in-law Marcello Mauro, sistersin-law Fidelma and Peggy and nephews Patrick, Richard and Philip O’Connor. Junction Plans Unveiled On Same Day As Yet Another Accident

Words: Adam Moynihan

Fresh plans to tackle the ongoing road safety issues at the Killarney bypass and Lewis Road junction were unveiled this week to town councillors, ironically on the same day that yet another collision took place at the notorious accident blackspot. Two people were hospitalised on Tuesday following an incident involving two cars at the junction. Traffic was backed up in all directions as emergency services attended the scene. Thankfully, it is believed that the injuries sustained by those involved are not serious. Interim plans revealed to councillors will involve restricting traffic exiting from the Lewis Road side to left turns only. Footpaths will be widened by one metre and new traffic islands will also be constructed. A reduced speed limit of 80kmph has also been proposed.

In the longer term, a new roundabout will be constructed near the Kilcummin junction of the bypass which will also lead to a new road that will go to Deerpark, down by the side of Ardshanavooley and onto the Park Road. While the stop-gap, traffic calming measures could be implemented by September, it is understood that the long term plans might not come to fruition until 2020. Hopefully the short term plans will help the situation but it appears as though we’re facing into another two years without any major progress on the most deadly junction in town. We here at the Killarney Advertiser have long campaigned for change at this particular accident blackspot so we welcome the new plans. We just hope that they don’t come too late.

News Briefs ...

No New Killarney Bypass Until 2030

Plans for a €200m road project that would completely bypass Killarney are back on the agenda, but it might be another 12 years before it becomes a reality. The proposed 27km road from Lissivigeen to Farranfore was shelved in 2008 due to the economic crisis but the need for it remains as Killarney’s traffic problem shows no signs of disappearing any time soon. Senior council engineers now say that the project is back on the cards. The road isn’t listed on the current National Development plan, however, so it could well be 2030 before is it funded and built.

An Angry Phone Call From The ‘No’ Side

We got an interesting phone call to the office this week from a woman who wanted to speak to me specifically. When asked by the person who answered the phone what it was in connection with, she was reluctant to say. Eventually the caller said it had something to do with advertising. She was subsequently told that I have nothing to do with advertising. She insisted upon talking to me regardless. Long story short, this woman was unhappy with the article I wrote in last week’s edition about the ubiquitous Eighth Amendment posters that you see at every turn. I thought this was unusual straight off the bat. I know that I’ve previously nailed my colours to the mast, so to speak, re: the upcoming vote, but I thought the article in question was fairly balanced. She didn’t agree. The reason? One of the images we used showed Mary Lou McDonald and other Sinn Féin members holding up their Yes posters. This, the caller

claimed, amounted to a show of support for the Yes side. “If I’m opening up the Killarney Advertiser and I’m looking at that, all I’m seeing is ‘Vote Yes’.” She added that I should have included a picture of No posters as well. The irony of this is (and I’m really trying not to sound patronising here) the headline above the image read ‘Referendum posters a real nuisance’. I wouldn’t exactly call that a ringing endorsement for the Yes campaign. The entire premise of the article was how irritating the posters are, regardless of their message. In fact, I was actually particularly critical of the Sinn Féin posters depicting just McDonald’s face and the word ‘yes’, which is the very reason I chose that photo in the first place. I tried to explain this but she wasn’t for listening. I also asked if she’d like to submit a letter for publication but she declined. “They must be delighted with you,” she said, presumably referring to Sinn Féin and the Yes side, whose campaign I was explicitly

slating in the article. If this is the kind of reaction I get from the No side when I’m critical of the Yes side, imagine what would happen if I was critical of the No side.

TOWNTALK Fantastic Night At Darkness Into Light Launch Over 160 people gathered in Reidy’s on Wednesday evening to join the O’Carroll family in launching this year’s Walk for Nathan – Darkness Into Light event. The popular walk, which is a fundraiser for Pieta House, is held each year in memory of Killarney youngster Nathan O’Carroll who committed suicide in 2007. He was just 14 years of age. This year’s walk takes place on Saturday, May 12 at 4.15am starting at the Killarney Racecourse and organisers are hoping for another big turn out at what has become one of the most successful events of its kind in the country. Pre-registration is

available at the Racecourse the Thursday and Friday before the walk from 5pm8pm. Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser, Nathan’s mother Marie said they had a “fantastic night” at the launch and she thanked Kieran Brady of Pieta House, Supt Flor Murphy and Sgt Dermot O’Connor for attending. She also thanked MC Brendan Fuller, Dan Devane, Seán Radley, photographer Marie Carroll-O’Sullivan, Mike Marshall and Connie Houlihan who played the bagpipes. She added that she was especially grateful to Pat and Niamh Sheahan of Reidy’s Bar who provided amazing food for all of the attendees.

Locals Baffled By Crossings At Roundabouts Last week’s article on placing pedestrian crossings directly after roundabouts certainly seems to have struck a chord with a number of locals, many of whom took to Facebook to voice their shared concerns over the issue. I’m glad I’m not the only one scratching my head at the practice. I talked specifically about the one at Cleeney but readers have highlighted others. Many feel as though they’re an accident waiting to happen.

Facebook Comments

Jonathan McCarthy: It is baffling. I think the one out near SuperValu is probably more dangerous as cars tend to be travelling faster. Lyndsey Morgan: I’m glad I’m not the only person to wonder this. I’ve never seen it in Wales, and can’t see the logic in them being so close. I’ve very often seen people driving through red lights as they are accelerating from the extremely busy junctions there. It’s deadly.

Words: Adam Moynihan

I’ve often said something bad is going to happen there. Alan Kavanagh: I travel a lot around the country with my job and only see this in Kerry. It’s dangerous. Why would you put it at a roundabout? Philip O’Brien: Pass here everyday. The amount of times cars just run the red lights is nuts. Seen so many near misses of people nearly getting knocked down by reckless drivers. Angela Lyne: There’s a pedestrian crossing out by Aldi that is about 50 metres from the roundabout and people barely use it. They still cross at the roundabout. A footbridge would be a good idea but would people use it? Shane Doona: Well done Adam for writing a piece on these terrible pedestrian crossings in this town. The one in particular by Daly’s is an accident waiting to happen. I use it going to and coming from work and it’s a nightmare. Drivers fail to stop. Only a matter of time before someone gets badly hurt.

Gooch Is Kerry Person Of The Year

Credit Union

Legendary Dr Crokes footballer Colm Cooper has been named Kerry Person of the Year. The award, now in its thirty ninth year, recognises an individual who has shown leadership, brought honour to the county, and performed services for the county to such an extent that could be described as being beyond the norm of everyday life. This award is based on nominations by the public and the final selection is made by the Kerry Association committee. It is something particularly special to the winners that it is an honour bestowed on them, by their own people, the people of Kerry. During her tribute to Colm Cooper, Kerry Association Chairperson Keelin Kissane, noted that the award was presented in recognition of the enormous contribution he has made to Kerry and for the joy, honour and pride that he has brought to the county by his exceptional ability and humility and good grace on and off the field. He is one of the most admired figures in the history of the GAA and has provided us with many moments of magic. A large crowd of Colm’s family and friends from Killarney and beyond were in attendance on the night.

Glenflesk & Kilcummin Launch Oskars DVD

The Chatroom

Marguerite O Dwyer, Paul Favier, Damien McCarthy.

Enda Is Back On The Couch This week we invited the man who was one of our first ever guests on The Chatroom back to talk about his day job! Enda Walshe from Quills Menswear called in to talk about their recently opened Menswear shop on High Street. Enda tells us about the new suit promotion that Quills are doing for a groom and his wedding party, as well as why

competition in the menswear market in Killarney is a healthy thing. Always one to have a joke up his sleeve Enda cracked The Chatroom host Kieran Healy up with some of the worst jokes you’ll hear! Tune in to our website www.killarneyadvertiser.ie and our Facebook page at noon on bank holiday Monday, May 7.

Right on time for the Rally weekend, Carpool Killarney-Oke is back! Kieran convinced Clerk of the Course Dermot Healy to take time out of his crazy schedule to have a drive around town and chat all things Rally of the Lakes! Dermot brought along a very special guest as former Top Gear presenter Quentin Wilson also joined Kieran in the car for a chat and a laugh! You can catch all the action on our Facebook page and our website tonight at 9pm.

Following on from the success of two sell-out nights at Cinema Killarney in aid of the Louise Lynch fund, the Oskars by Glenflesk and Killcummin GAA Clubs launched their DVD on Friday night last in the Corner Bar, Barradubh. A large gathering of cast members brought the two clubs together on a weekend that saw both Kilcummin and Glenflesk senior teams secure a place against each other in the Intermediate Club Championship final. No one could have written this script! While both teams prepare for their showdown on Sunday, parishion-

ers are eagerly getting their hands on their copy of the Oskars DVD containing the seven films shown on the night. DVDs cost €10 and are available now from Kilcummin Post Office, Denis O’Brien’s shop in Glenflesk, the Corner Bar in Barradubh and from committee members. Be sure to get your copy before they sell out. After six months of building connections between the two clubs, we will have to park that rapport temporarily at 4pm on Sunday when the battle to be crowned Intermediate Champions commences. May the best team win!

Era Of Autonomous Cars Coming Fast, Summit Hears The era of connected car technology and autonomous vehicles (AVs) represents a major business opportunity for Ireland, delegates at this year’s Electronomous car-tech summit heard yesterday. Speaking on the second day of the two-day conference in the INEC in Killarney host Quentin Willson, the award-winning motoring journalist and former BBC ‘Top Gear’ presenter, said that Ireland’s technology credentials and supply of talent will be a major factor for companies looking to invest in the mobility space.

“As we’ve seen and heard at this year’s Electronomous event, the era of connected car technology and autonomous vehicles is coming fast, leading to huge growth in the car-tech sector and it is a great opportunity for an economy like Ireland’s,” Mr Willson told delegates at Electronomous 2018 today. Dr. Bob Flynn from Enterprise Ireland who attended the event said: “Ireland is rightly renowned as a global technology hub and we all know that most of the big players have their European base here. Any company looking to invest in this mobility revolution

can take advantage of Ireland’s excellent indigenous business infrastructure, stellar technology credentials and world renowned research expertise”. Quentin Willson added: “When you factor in the Brexit effect, I think it’s clear that Ireland is in a great position to grab a significant part of that new business”. This year’s Electronomous summit attracted an international line-up of experts to explain how the future of human mobility is being shaped by electric cars, connected technology, autonomous vehicles and other developments in the car-tech space.

Views On The News

Anne Lucey gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry and beyond

Is This Little Ireland Worth Preserving? A so-called pro-life rally at the Market Cross on Saturday drew raised eyebrows from more than just me. There were a number of children in the rally with banners. Who exposes children to an adult question, and such an adult question, I wondered. Among the campaigners were young Americans with accents. Okay, I have heard about this before – they are being drafted in and American money is involved in the movement. But what intrigued me was what I choose to call the Little Ireland mentality. Three women behind me were having a conversation about asylum seekers and about needing to keep “that” (abortion) out of Ireland. I have no idea how the two subjects were being connected, but they were mentioned in the same breath. What interested me though are the red and white posters: 1 in 5 babies in England are aborted – babies, mind you. This is straight from the handbook of fascism of course. What were the Jews when you wanted to whip up hatred? Baby killers, of course. My eyebrows were raised at the 1 in 5 claim, but I hadn’t realised the hurt it is causing to the many English people living here and the many Irish people with English connections, until I met a friend. To call the old enemy baby killers - which is what this campaign is doing – is upsetting and is, on reflection, quite frankly outrageous. England is one of the most fundamentally Christian societies there is. If these people wanted to bother to lift the cover and look at the English parliamentary tradition, their literary tradition, and the high intellectual quality of their church services which puts the emotional and rather tabloid, below par sermonising we are used to in Holy Ireland in the shade! And if you don’t believe me, next time you are in London, go to St Martin-in-the-Fields near the national gallery for a highly charged, devotional Sunday morning mass,

combined with an intellectually challenging homily, which the public there are expected to understand. In most churches in Ireland we are spoken down to, not challenged. I have taken issue with the No side posters before – depicting only women’s bellies. But I take serious issue again now and believe an apology is due from this small-minded lot to England. Why aren’t the German statistics being displayed? The American? The French? No, this wouldn’t suit the Little Irelanders, who want to draw up the bridge. And to cap it all, the verdict of the Fact Check project which examined the claim of 1 in 5 concluded it is unproven. It seems miscarriage statistics and whatever you are having yourself are thrown into it in the eagerness of the Little Irelanders in their misguided thinking that attacking England will appeal anymore to people in this Republic. Let us look at us in this great Republic for a minute. This is a State/Church which has enslaved women – even now childcare, medical care is aeons behind England. We don’t even have to refer to the cervical smear scandal. We have a culture of abuse of women and the circumscription of their lives. We condone the abuse of women, emotional and physical. Church and State condones it. We need their free labour. We need to keep them down and self-doubting and poor. And it’s all part of it, believe me, because if you aren’t the Virgin Mary in this country, you must be Eve and evil and there is a generation of men who have been educated in this view and are only too happy to trot it out. Of course what is behind much of the so-called prolife campaign is not just England bashing, but woman bashing. Sure if you allow “that” in here, every woman in the country won’t be able to resist aborting every baby! There will be queues of baby killers! That is the thinking. Is this Little Ireland worth preserving?

Cuckoo flowers and dandelion are standing among the cut grass along bicycle/jaunting car park towards Muckross this May. Is this a deliberate policy? Kerry County Council tell me not alone is it a deliberate policy, the council has actually planted the wild flowers. There is a growing awareness of wildflowers as they decline in the chemical meadows that pass now for cow grass, and May and June is the best month for the queens of the meadow. They are a wonderful sight in among the blossoming cherry in this later than usual spring this week in Muckross. On a sober note, ditches, verges and grass margins are, in many parts, the last refuge of the wildflowers. Cowslips are now a rare sight and but for the primroses in railway banks, we wouldn’t remember them at all.

If Tralee Gets Any More Public Money It Will Sink Finishing this column on Thursday, I hear Tralee is one of the towns selected for major flood funding. If Tralee gets anymore public money it will sink! I like Tralee but the millions being poured into it from the public purse – including from the rates collected in Killarney – is quite simply gob-smacking. Islands of geese, community gardens, social housing, social heating, roads and practically all their tourist attractions are funded or underwritten by the public purse. And watch this space, there are moves afoot now for an events centre on a public site, I am told. Practically all the public buildings there and places like the courthouse are an absolute disgrace – because the town can’t decide where it wants it to go and those who could never bothered to lobby for a new facility when court houses around the country were being done up. I can’t understand why the main courthouse needs to be in Tralee. Could a few able Killarney people get together and earmark a site - perhaps even part of St Finan’s - and present it to the courts service? I believe the service is open to fresh ideas, tired of being mired down in Tralee’s unique sentimental take on history which leaves everyone else catching cold and making do with a smelly, uncomfortable, outdated and cold facility. I am with Cllr Donal Grady this week when he told his

colleagues in the council chamber in Killarney (specifically including management) to “wake up” and shout for their town. Cllr Grady accused management and fellow councillors of being “too quiet” when it came to pushing Killarney’s case. “How come there are bypasses in Dingle and Listowel and we are still waiting? We need to put in a far better effort. It’s time we woke up! The crumbs of Kerry are coming to Killarney,” Cllr Grady said. Killarney manager Angela Allen rejected this. She said a lot of work and “huge effort” was being put in by this council in dealing with traffic problems in Killarney. However, the projects took time because of statutory requirements. She also said Killarney had a bypass previously. There will want to be huge effort for Killarney. Senior engineer Paul Curry told the council the only real solution to Killarney’s traffic problems, which were addressed at length on Monday last, was the €200 million Farranfore to Muckross Road bypass. And guess who parked this? Leo Varadkar as transport minister when he withdrew funding in 2012. Paul Curry, senior council engineer and a member of the TII roads design team in Castleisland, said there

was disappointment the route had not been listed in the current national development. €25 million funding had now been assigned “to reactivate the project appraisal,” Mr Curry said. Plans had been submitted by Mr Curry’s office to the TII for their approval. “It still is the best solution to traffic problems in Killarney,” Mr Curry said. The scheme was likely to be done in phases. The Outer Relief Road, to run from Lissivigeen on the Cork side to Knockeendubh on the Tralee side of Killarney was being considered as a stand alone project. The roll out of that section of the scheme will take between five and eight years. Meeting with the TII was now “critically important” on the agenda, we were told. Fine Gael need to get moving in Killarney – we have a minister pushing the Macroom bypass, and that is necessary. But it is rolling along on its own wheels now. We have a local, influential Fine Gael senator, who is not afraid to talk out, in Paul Coghlan. We have a Fine Gael MEP who is also not afraid of speaking out. We need funding for the National Park, for rangers and maintenance people, we need roads funding in Killarney – roads funding that was taken off us by the Fine Gael government and the Taoiseach no less!

Business Of The Week Emphasis On Rehab At Kerry Physiotherapy Ideally located in the heart of Killarney town, Kerry Physiotherapy provides a wealth of expertise and the very best treatments to help you get back to your best as quickly as possible. Whether you’re dealing with a sports injury or nagging back pain, a hip replacement or post-natal issues, the team at Kerry Physiotherapy are on hand to point you in the right direction. “The emphasis is on rehab and helping clients to help themselves,” says Chartered Physiotherapist Ruth Allen. “It’s not just about coming in and getting a ‘loosening out’,” she explains. “Yes, we’ll assess you and we’ll do some manual therapy, but I’m not going to do that for the next six months. What we want to do is identify problems and then address them, and the best way of addressing weaknesses for example, is by strengthening. We’ll give you exercises to do, be it stretching or yoga or resistance exercises and try to get you into the gym. “We work closely with personal trainers. Myself and Bobby from Peak Performance do a movement therapy clinic once a month where we deal with some sort of common problem, such as back pain, hamstring problems or shoulder pain. I talk about what we do

from a physio’s perspective and then we bring you through more gymbased exercises where you get supervised strength and conditioning tips. This is recorded and posted on our individual social media sites.” Ruth and her team, which also includes Chartered Physiotherapist Kieran O’Shea, Athletic Therapist Cillian Fitzgerald and Women’s Health Physiotherapist Fiona Healy O’Connor, are all about encouraging you to maintain your active lifestyle. “I’d be very slow to tell someone that they couldn’t play a football match, unless they really couldn’t,” Ruth says. “If you pull your hamstring, for example, you can’t run, so you can’t do it. But we definitely try to facilitate patients as much as possible to partake in their activity. I guess the fact that we’ve got such experience in sport as well, that obviously helps.” Ruth is currently in her third year working with the Kerry Juniors, having previously been part of the Kerry Senior set-up for two years, as well as the U-21 set-up for three years. She has also done physio for a host of GAA clubs around the county including Spa, Dr Crokes, Glenflesk, Kilcummin and Dromid, while Kieran O’Shea has also

worked with the Kerry Minors for a number of years. Kerry Physiotherapy is the only clinic in Kerry that offers shockwave therapy, which is a novel form of treating tendons and heel spurs. “It’s really, really effective with heel spurs and plantar fasciitis. It tries to stimulate the tendon to push through the processes of healing and inflammation,” Ruth explains. The modern facility, which is located above Sewell’s Pharmacy on New Street, has separate treatment rooms, allowing patients to be treated with the utmost privacy and ensuring that they have their physiotherapist’s full attention for the full 30-40 minutes of their appointment. Office Manager Gemma Eames is on hand to make sure the whole operation runs as smoothly as possible and there is always someone on hand to take calls at reception. • For more information or to book and appointment, visit kerryphysiotherapy.ie, call 064-6670960 or email info@kerryphysiotherapy.ie.

This weekend the iconic Rally of the Lakes takes place for the 39th time and motorsport fans are on Some of the finest drivers in the history of the sport have competed in the legendary event, which is Here are a few interesting stats and facts that you may or may not know about the famous Rally of the Lakes.

Facts & Figures 1. Only 2 drivers from outside the

island have won the Rally of the Lakes. Mark Lovell won in a Ford Sierra Cosworth in 1987 and two years later fellow Englishman Russell Brookes won, also in a Ford Sierra Cosworth. 2. The 25th Rally of the Lakes in 2004 received an entry of 250 cars, consisting of 172 in the Main Field, 28 Historic Cars and 50 Junior crews for the first ever running of a Junior Category in Ireland. 3. The event has seen a number of high profile competitors over the years. Rallying’s first ever world champion, Bjorn Waldegard, won the historic section of the rally in 1994. Colin McRae took his Mark 2 Escort to Killarney in 2005 to act as course car and two years later McRae’s protégé, Kris Meeke, won the rally outright. Meeke now spearheads Citroen’s World Rally Championship team with Killarney navigator, Paul Nagle. Former Tour de France winner Stephen Roche was a regular competitor on the rally in the late 80s and early 90s. 4. Noreen Marshall, Clerk of the Course for the 2004 event, had been Event Secretary for the previous 24 years and since then has been either Deputy Clerk of the Course or Club Steward, giving her a senior role in all 39 events since the Rally of the Lakes was first run in 1979. 5. The Rally of the Lakes was originally run on the first weekend in December and when the late Gerard Horgan, who was Deputy Clerk of the Course, heard a rumour in Trade Union circles that a new Bank Holiday on the first Monday in May was being considered, the Club took a chance that this would happen and applied to move the Rally of the Lakes to that date in 1993. Virtually everybody else in the sport, not having heard of the government proposals, felt that they were mad to move into an already crowded section of the calendar. 6. The biggest spectator crowds ever seen at the Rally of the Lakes was when the late Colin McRae drove his famous red Mk11 Escort as a course car in 2005. Estimates from garda figures, bank lodgement records and traders suggest that there were forty thousand extra people in town on the weekend, contributing up to €10 million to the local economy. 7. With six overall victories, the late Bertie Fisher remains the most successful driver ever to compete here but the honour of

being the most successful competitor goes to Rory Kennedy who was Fisher’s co-driver on all his Lakes wins and was also on the notes for Stephen Finlay when he won in 2000. a. Most wins as driver: b. Bertie Fisher - 6 (1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1996) c. Most wins as co-driver: d. Rory Kennedy – 7 (1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1996, 2000) 8. The longest Tarmac Stage ever run in an Irish Rally was the 35-mile marathon which circled Carrauntoohill, Ireland’s highest mountain, and was run twice on the same night in 1982, starting at midnight. 9. The Bertie Fisher Memorial Cup is dedicated to the memory of the late Bertie Fisher, six times winner of the Rally of the Lakes, multiple Tarmac Champion and for many years the undisputed King of Molls Gap. His fastest time of 9.59 was the first and only sub ten minute time for the long version of the Gap which is now no longer used. The Cup is presented to the driver who sets fastest time on the Molls Gap stage of the Rally of the Lakes each year. It is an unusual award in that it can actually be won without finishing the rally as the fastest time from either day counts and the times are not cumulative. The names of the winners over the years read like a who’s who of Irish rallying and, apart from overall victory, it is the most sought after award and keenly contested by all the top crews. 10. In its 39-year history, the Rally of the Lakes has only had five title sponsors: Radley Engineering, Carling Black Label, The Gleneagle, Ordnance Survey and Cartell.ie. 11. Molls Gap has featured at least once in every Rally of the Lakes to date and in all except two occasions it has been the first stage of the rally. 12. Denis Cronin and Helen O’Sullivan remain the only KDMC members to have won the Rally of the Lakes (2010) with Donie O’Sullivan and Paul Nagle running a very close second to Eugene Donnelly in 2003. Donnelly afterwards said that if the event had gone on for another stage he would have been overtaken as the oil pressure was failing in his car on the last stage. 13. Drivers who have won the Lakes more than once are Bertie Fisher (6), Billy Coleman (4), Austin McHale (3), Andrew

Nesbitt, Tim McNulty, Darragh O’Riordan, Donagh Kelly and Sam Moffett (2 each) with single wins by Ger Buckley, Demi Fitzgerald, James Doherty, Mark Lovell, Russell Brookes, Frank Meagher, James Leckey, Ian Greer, Stephen Finlay, Eugene Donnelly, Derek McGarrity, Kris Meeke, Eamonn Boland, Denis Cronin, Gary Jennings. Sadly four of these drivers, Fisher, Fitzgerald, Lovell and Meagher, are no longer with us. 14. The Toastal Cup, which is the overall award for the Rally of the Lakes, was originally presented to the Kingdom Car Club by the Traders of Killarney in 1954 and was competed for in Hillclimbs and Navigation events in the years before the Club was disbanded. When they ceased to function as a Club the members placed the cup in a bank for safe keeping and there it remained until the first Rally of the Lakes was being planned in 1979. Jimmy Moloney from Listowel, who had been a member of the Kingdom Car Club, recovered the cup and presented it to the Killarney and District Motor Club for their new event. 15. Since 1979, the rally has run 39 times. The only year it has not run was in 2001 due to the Foot and Mouth Disease crisis. 16. Rally of the Lakes wins by manufacturer: Subaru (17), Ford (11), Opel/Vauxhall (7), Toyota (2) and BMW (1). 17. Competition Number 55 is not used in any event run by Killarney & District Motor Club. This is in memory of the co-driver Seán Conlon from Co Monaghan who was drowned on the Molls Gap stage in 1987, competing at number 55. 18. 1992 was the last year the rally ran in December. Since 1993, the event has run on the May bank holiday weekend. 19. The event has run under an international permit since 1983. It was also in this year the rally became a counting round of the Irish Tarmac Rally Championship. 20. The 1994 Rally of the Lakes was a counting round of the European Rally Championship, running under co-efficient 2 status. 21. Mike Marshall was Clerk of the Course for the Rally of the Lakes from 1979–2003. He was in charge for 24 years, creating an Irish and possibly world record as the longest serving COC in rallying. COC Roll of Honour: Mike Marshall (1979 – 2003), Noreen Marshall (2004), Gary McCormick (2005–2009), Liam Cronin (2010), Dermot Healy (2011–2015), Anthony O’Connor (2016–2017) and Dermot Healy (2018).

s are once again expected to flock to Killarney in their tens of thousands to sample the action. which is internationally recognised as one of the most unique and challenging courses in the world. e Lakes.

22. Noel O’Sullivan of Killarney holds the re-

cord for the most consistent entrant in the Rally of the Lakes. 2018 will be his 36th year. His car, a Ford Escort (4497 ZB), is in its 33rd year and his navigator Nicky Burke is in his 26th year. Charlie Hickey is next in line: this year will be his 33rd Rally of the Lakes. In 2018, his brother John Hickey starts his 31st.

The five-star Dunloe Hotel & Gardens, located close to one of Ireland’s most iconic tourist destinations, the Gap of Dunloe, officially opened its doors last Friday after undergoing a stunning 18-month renovation of the restaurant, bar, reception, lobby and lounge spaces as well as the enhancement of the gardens and car park. A substantial €18million investment by the hotel’s owners, the Liebherr family, has brought new life to the hotel, enhancing its long-standing relationship with the beautiful surroundings and maximising the property’s unrivalled views of the Gap of Dunloe. The Liebherr family has been at the forefront of tourism and manufacturing industries in Killarney and the surrounding areas for over 60 years, employing 1,000 people across the country. Tánaiste Simon Coveney TD, Minister for Foreign Affairs & Trade, joined Dr Isolde Liebherr to celebrate and welcome the reopening of this magnificent five-star hotel. Speaking at the official re-opening, Tánaiste Simon Coveney TD said: “It is my great pleasure to open a new jewel for tourists in Ireland, in a place that is one of the jewels in the crown of our entire tourist industry. The Liebherr family’s commitment to Ireland, with more than 1,000 employees, is so important and

appreciated. The rebirth of this hotel is a further sign of the Liebherrs’ dedication”. Local building contractors Griffin Brothers led the year-and-a-half-long renovation with the assistance of O’Carroll Engineering who implemented the building’s steel works. At the height of the build, the site had over 160 people working across all areas, including Tralee company Designer Landscapes Ltd who, along with Head Gardener Dave Barry, updated the gardens and outdoor spaces using a beautiful collection of native and international flora and greenery finished with Kilkenny limestone. Swiss company Monoplan took the lead on the design aspect of the build. Despite updating and reinventing the hotel spaces, the Monoplan team was eager to retain and reinforce existing elements of the property that made it so special. The transformation begins at the driveway where guests instantly perceive the Dunloe Castle Heritage Park with its unique tree population. The public areas of The Dunloe Hotel & Gardens were redesigned and rebuilt to ensure optimum efficiency and accessibility throughout the hotel. The primary focus of the build was to retain the identity and integrity of The Dunloe Hotel & Gardens to give guests

a sense of homecoming with the familiar silhouette of the two towers and an interior design that relates to the tradition of the hotel. It was equally important to create a whole new building with extraordinary spaces, new terraces and a design that lives up to the expectations of a five-Star hotel. Managing Partner at Monoplan, Philip Wohlfarth, said of the renovation: “The double height window in The Grill Restaurant ensures that everyone will be able to take in the beauty of the Gap of Dunloe. The new terraces and enhanced landscaping will allow the hotel’s customers to sit outside and enjoy the magnificent surroundings”. The restaurant overlooks the iconic view of the Gap of Dunloe in spectacular fashion, with a room height of six metres and huge panoramic windows to the south. This area is characterised by natural light, fresh colours and the connection of interior and exterior. In contrast to this, the lobby, the library tower and the bar have been designed in such a way that dark, warm tones and precious materials create an inviting,

rather introverted atmosphere to sink into. In the façades of the towers the new, the old and newly-interpreted come together in an exemplary way with the familiar stained glass flower windows which were removed, cleaned and re-set in the stone clad tower, juxtaposed to protruding contemporary window reveals in dark aluminium. Similarly, the interior design combines existing pieces of furniture and artwork with a whole new fit-out that is rich in texture and detail, completed with bold wallpapers and traditional tiles. Speaking at the re-opening of the hotel, Managing Director of Killarney Hotels Ltd, Michael Brennan, said: “After an 18-month refurbishment and renovation we are delighted to be re-opening The Dunloe Hotel & Gardens. The Liebherr family has over the past 60 years continually re-invested in their hotels and the completion of this latest renovation project demonstrates once again their commitment to Killarney and the surrounding area. We look forward to showcasing the magnificent work that has been done here at The Dunloe Hotel & Gardens, which has enhanced the facilities we offer our guests and has

increased employment within the hotel sector. The hotel has a rich history but in all its many years has never looked as good as it does now”. The gardens at The Dunloe Hotel & Gardens are celebrated in all aspects of the renovation and can be enjoyed both outside and from within the property. Guests can traverse the world in an hour in the gardens of the hotel. The voyage starts with Chilean fir trees and leads on to Australian gums, South African lilies, New Zealand cabbage trees, New Zealand cherries, Japanese maples, North American dogwoods, South American fuchsias and back to its roots with a Killarney strawberry tree. While the newly developed herb garden delivers fresh seasonal herbs for the hotel’s chefs. “The new planting has been designed to complement the existing garden,” explains Head Gardener Dave Barry. “An example would be the new roundabout that has been planted with large pine trees. These are similar to the pine trees that were planted in the 1920s and tower over the entrance of the gardens. On the south side guests are overlooking a 300-year-old mature oak tree with the stunning view of the Gap of Dunloe in the background.” The gardens surrounding the shell of MacThomas’

medieval keep have a dramatic setting, looking towards the mountains girdled by the Ring of Kerry. Camellias, magnolias, roses and rhododendrons, handpicked by renowned plantsman Sir Roy Lancaster, now flourish in the sheltered grounds together with rare specimens such as the aromatic-leaved ‘Headache’ tree. In the paddocks to the front of the hotel, descendants of Hafflinger ponies brought over by Dr Hans Liebherr half a century ago still graze in the lush paddocks and will continue to bring joy to guests of all ages. Speaking about the re-opening of The Dunloe Hotel & Gardens, Kerry TD Brendan Griffin, Minister for Transport, Tourism & Sport, said: “This is very positive news for Kerry tourism. The Europe, The Dunloe and Ard na Sidhe hotels are some of the top hotels in Kerry and this investment builds on a strong tradition of hospitality by this hotel group. I wish the management and their teams the best of luck with the re-opening and assure everyone involved that the government is fully committed to working with them to achieve the best possible future for the tourism industry.” 2018 marks the beginning of a new chapter in the story of The Dunloe Hotel & Gardens. A chapter that is a fitting foundation for the next half-century.

This event is incorporated into the May Bank Holiday Weekend Festivities and has proved to be an exceptionally busy weekend for the town of Killarney and the surrounding area. The competition side of the rally is staged over two days: eight stages on Saturday from 7am in the morning to 5.50pm in the evening, and a further eight stages on Sunday starting at 7am and concluding on the Ceremonial Grand Stand at The Gleneagle Hotel at 5pm. Full details of road closures are available on www.garda.ie. Speaking at Killarney Garda Station this week, Sgt Dermot O’Connell said: “The rally weekend creates a significant increase in policing demands for An Garda Síochána. The massive influx of rally supporters, competitors and regu-

lar holiday weekenders to the Killarney area is estimated to be in the region of 60,000 visitors. The entire weekend is there to be enjoyed by the whole family and that is exactly what we want to see, people enjoying themselves. “This year’s Policing Operation has built on the success of recent years; it sets out the plan of action to deal effectively with all of these policing needs that have been identified following consultation with the many stakeholders. There will be numerous checkpoints set up over the weekend as well as increased high visibility patrols in the Killarney area. Any anti-social behaviour, public drinking or reckless behaviour on the roads will not be tolerated. We are asking anyone who is attending the rally this weekend to park up the car for the evening if you are having a drink and remember that you may still be over the limit the morning after a night out.”

Wedding of the week

Bride-To-Be Visits Pupils En Route To Church

Sharon O’Riordan kept her husband-to-be waiting just a little longer while she fulfilled a promise to some very important people. True to her word, Sharon arrived at Little Explorers Preschool at 11.30 am on the way to her wedding in St Mary’s Cathedral. The children were amazed to see their preschool teacher looking every inch a princess! Sharon started Little Explorers Preschool in Two Mile CNS in September 2017. In addition to organising her wedding, in a few short months Sharon has successfully established the school which is committed to high standards of early learning. In a statement, Little Explorers said, “The staff, parents and children of Little Explorers Preschool and Two Mile CNS wish Sharon and her husband Mike McCarthy every happiness.” Sharon and Mike were married at the Cathedral on Friday, April 13 with their reception at the Ballygarry Heights Hotel.

A Weekly Round-Up Of News + Views From Kerry And Around

Ross Calls Healy-Rae A “Road Traffic Terrorist” Danny Healy-Rae is considering legal action after Transport Minister Shane Ross referred to him as a “road traffic terrorist”. Ross made the comments yesterday while calling on rural TDs such as Healy-Rae to back drink-driving legislation. “They’re behaving like road traffic terrorists – there’s a kind of guerilla warfare going on and it’s costing lives. I appeal to those very, very few people left opposing this legislation in the Dáil to pass the Bill,” Ross said. Responding to Ross’ comments during a Dáil debate on the legislation last night, HealyRae said: “I do not know why I should be called a terrorist. I have a family at home and I do not think the minister would like to be called a terrorist. I will

deal with that in another fashion and I have sought legal advice.” “Any option available to me, I’ll nail him,” he later added. The legislation would lead to motorists being banned from driving if they are detected with 50 to 80 milligrams of alcohol per 100ml of blood in their system. A number of TDs including Healy-Rae have said this will disproportionately affect people living in rural or isolated areas. “I sympathise with all the families who have lost loved ones due to drunk driving. I emphasis ‘drunk driving’, however, because I do not believe that someone who has consumed a pint, or a pint and a half, and is under 80mg is a drunk driver,” Healy-Rae said.

Trump Corner Trump Denies That Hush Money Came From Campaign Funds President Donald Trump has denied money used to buy a porn star’s silence came from election campaign funds. He admitted, in a series of tweets, that lawyer Michael Cohen had paid off Stormy Daniels during the campaign and that he was reimbursed. It was the first time the president has referred directly to the payment, although he remains adamant there was no affair with Ms Daniels. Use of campaign funds would be a violation of federal law. Earlier, his legal aide Rudy Giuliani had said the money was Mr Trump’s personal cash. The president fired off three tweets on Thursday morning, focusing on the reimbursement and a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) with Daniels. Mr Trump’s argument appears to be that the NDA was a typical agreement entered into by celebrities and therefore not an election-related matter. This could be crucial in determining whether the $130,000 (£95,650)

Sunny Bank Holiday Weekend In Store A warm and sunny bank holiday weekend is in store across the country with temperatures reaching 21 degrees in places. Temperatures will start to creep up from Friday with the cool north-easterly winds of recent days being replaced by warm air from the Azores. All parts of the country with the exception of west and north-westerly coastal fringes will have a sunny weekend. Friday will see highs of 18 degrees and it will be mostly dry. Saturday will be a brighter day with sunny spells and highs of 19 degrees. Sunday and Monday will see the fine weather continue and will get the warmest of the sunshine. Temperatures will be

between 20 and 21 degrees in parts of the midlands and east. Tuesday will be the last day of the current good spell. The best weather will be in the southeast. Current indications suggest that on Wednesday, rain will spread from the west with showers bringing cooler conditions.

Hawaii Bans Coral Reef-Harming Sunscreens

paid to Ms Daniels was legal. The actress says she had an affair with Mr Trump in 2006 and she slept with him once.

Hawaii has become the first US state to pass a bill banning the sale of any sunscreens that have chemicals known to harm coral reefs. The bill bars the sale of sunscreens containing chemicals oxybenzone and octinoxate, which some scientists say contribute to coral bleaching. The chemicals are used in over 3,500 of the most popular sunscreen products. The bill, which would take effect in 2021, now awaits the signature of Democratic Governor David Ige. Democratic Senator Mike Gabbard introduced the bill, which proposes to end the sale of any non-prescrip-

tion sunscreens containing oxybenzone and octinoxate, statewide. Mr Gabbard told the Honolulu Star Advertiser that if the governor signs the bill, it would become “a first-in-theworld law”. “Hawaii is definitely on the cutting edge by banning these dangerous chemicals in sunscreens,” Mr Gabbard said. “This will make a huge difference in protecting our coral reefs, marine life, and human health.” The bill states that the chemicals kill developing coral, increase coral bleaching and cause “genetic damage to coral and other marine organisms”.

Same Car Impounded Twice In Two Hours

Gardaí in Naas impounded a vehicle yesterday for having no tax, insurance or NCT – twice in the space of two hours. The car was initially stopped by Naas Roads Policing and when the infringements were spotted, gardaí brought the vehicle to their compound. The relevant fees were quickly paid by the driver and the vehicle was

subsequently towed from their compound on a tow truck. Two hours later, the same vehicle, being driven by the same driver, was spotted trying to evade gardaí in the same town. The brazen road user was again apprehended and his vehicle was again impounded. He will now face two separate charges in court.

Basque Separatist Group Eta Dissolves

The Basque separatist group Eta, which killed more than 800 people during its 40-year terror campaign, has announced its full dissolution days after apologising to its victims and their families. In a letter dated April 16, but published by a Spanish online newspaper on Wednesday, the group informed Basque institutions and civil society groups that it had come to the end of its existence. “Eta has decided to declare an end to its historical cycle and its role, thereby bringing its path to an end,” said the letter, which was obtained by eldiario.es. “Eta has completely dissolved all its structures and declared an end to its political initiative.” The group, which abandoned

its armed campaign seven years ago, said the move was part of a process intended to “bring about a new political cycle” in the Basque homeland. “This decision ends Eta’s 60-year historical cycle,” it added. “But it does not bring an end to the conflict between the Basque homeland and Spain and France. The conflict did not begin with Eta and will not end with its dissolution.” The letter said Basques had a new opportunity to break with the past and build a future together: “Let’s not repeat our mistakes. Let’s not let our problems fester. Doing so will only give rise to new problems.” Eta will hold a symbolic event marking its disbandment in southern France on Friday.

Castleisland To Farranfore Road To Close For Three Months The stretch of road between Farranfore and Castleisland is set to close for three months over the summer so that the narrow Dysert Bridge can be replaced. Drivers hoping to travel to Castleisland (or onwards towards Limerick) from the Killarney area between May 24 and August 20 will be forced to go to the Ballycarty roundabout just outside Tralee before turning back for Castleisland, a 25km detour that adds around 15 minutes to a journey. The bridge in question, which is located 2km outside of Castleisland, is currently so narrow that two cars can barely pass at the same time. A minor realignment of the N23 Castleisland to Farranfore road will also be carried out.

Solemn Buddhist Funerals For Japanese Robot Dogs Laying to rest a much-loved family pet usually requires little more than a shovel, a plot in the back garden and some well-chosen words. But what happens when the “pet” in question is a robot? In Japan, the demise of irreparable Aibo robotic dogs is marked in much the same way as that of humans, with a solemn ceremony at a Buddhist temple. At a memorial for 114 “deceased” members of Sony’s old generation of Aibo, incense wafted through the air as priests in traditional robes chanted sutras and prayed for the repose of their souls. Each dog wore a tag showing where they had come from and the

names of their grieving owners. When it first went on sale in 1999, Aibo was touted as the world’s first entertainment robot for home use, with initial batch of 3,000 selling out in just 20 minutes, despite costing more than US$2,000 each. Sony went on to sell more than 150,000, but decided to end production in 2006 as it attempted to cut costs. The firm stopped repairing malfunctioning Aibo in 2014, leaving owners whose pets were beyond repair unsure of how to dispose of their companions. Kofukuji, a 450-year-old temple in Isumi, near Tokyo, has conducted services for 800 “dead” Aibo dogs.

100 Killed By Indian Dust Storms At least 100 people have been killed and scores more injured in fierce dust storms that hit the northern Indian states of Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. The storms on Wednesday disrupted electricity, uprooted trees, destroyed houses and killed livestock. Many of the dead were sleeping when their houses collapsed after being struck by intense bursts of lightning. Dust storms are common in this part of India during summer but loss of life on this scale is unusual. At least 65 people died in Uttar Pradesh, more than half of them of them in Agra district which is home to the Taj Mahal monument. Officials say the death toll could in-

crease. Local journalist Laxmikant Pachouri told the BBC that 21 people had died in the village of Kheragarh, about 50km southwest of Agra. Some of the houses there were made of mud, others from bricks and mortar. “People are in shock and can’t believe that such destruction happened in their village. I met a family which lost four children last night - it was so disturbing. The family can’t believe it. They told me that their children were playing in the house when a wall collapsed on them,” Pachouri said. “Their parents are so distraught and cannot stop crying.” Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was saddened by the loss of life.

Netflix - RuPaul’s Drag Race

Review: Anne-Marie - Speak Your Mind Speak Your Mind certainly starts well with Cry, a delicious kiss-off to a cheating boyfriend in which she grinds out killer lyrics like “You’ll never find another, Another piece of luxury like me, You’re such a mother******, You couldn’t even make, make, make my tea” over spacey hi-tech and hyperventilating production. Humour and idiosyncratic storytelling dominate an album packed full

of r`n’b and dance and Anne-Marie’s Rihanna like patois certainly curls and darts around the haywire production values. Trigger is particular dazzling and when she slows it down on Then, it’s for an emotional electro ballad that reveals that she’s not all sass and attitude. Likewise with the funny and endearing body positive anthem Perfect, a rundown of how, sometimes at least, she’s really just a slob like everybody else.

TV3| May 4th, 21:00 (1991, Comedy) A would-be music producer from Dublin believes he can make it big in Ireland by promoting a top-rate soul band, so he trawls a working-class neighbourhood and auditions unlikely singers and musicians to put together as a group. Alan Parker’s urban comedy, based on the novel by Roddy Doyle, starring Robert Arkins, Andrew Strong, Michael Aherne, Angeline Ball and Maria Doyle Kennedy.

No T, no shade! RuPaul’s Drag Race is quite possibly the only reality TV show worth watching. Why? It’s got a heart. And it’s got RuPaul. It’s also got an amazing, very human cast of characters and, mercifully, doesn’t fall into the insincere, heartstring-tugging nonsense that plagues some of the more wellknown offerings. The format is pretty simple: a group of drag queens dance, act, pout, sew and glue gun for victory. Every episode centres on a specific task, normally involving some innovative arts and crafts, before concluding with a catwalk-off to pick the winners and the losers – followed by an epic lip-sync showdown. But what really makes this the queen of reality shows is the people. In short: it’ll make you feel good about the world and the wonderful people in it. Now sashay away.

EQUAL STATUS The Workplace Relations Commission deals with most complaints of discrimination in employment and access to goods and services. These complaints previously were dealt with by the Equality Tribunal but those functions were transferred to the Workplace Relations Commission on the 1st of October 2015. The Commission deals with claims under the Employment Equality Acts, 1998 – 2015, which outlaws discrimination at work. This can include such matters as recruitment and promotion, equal pay, working conditions, trainee or experience, bullying and harassment and dismissal. It further deals with matters under the Equal Status Acts, 2000 to 2015, which outlaws discrimination outside of the workplace. This deals in particular with the provision of goods and services. It further relates to mattes such as selling, leasing of property and can also deal with matters such as education.

Event

Ready Set Go… To The Expo

As nearly 140 exhibitors prepare for this year’s Kerry EXPO, it promises to be bigger than ever! Many exhibitors are designing their marketing activities, creating advertising campaigns and listing their offerings for this mega event of the year. While larger companies aim to develop their employee brand, they also take the opportunity to engage in a one-day event that brings together the broader business and local community. SME’s and start-up companies will no doubt concentrate on selling their products or promoting their services, in a bid to develop further awareness around their own business brand. Educational institutions will market their educational a upskilling courses, while financial institutions, state and semi-state bodies will also be available to deliver information on the services they provide. In addition, a number of recruitment companies and employers will be actively recruiting. According to Liz Maher: “The EXPO creates a space where companies can turn an influx of visitors and into evangelists for their brand and indeed for Kerry. The idea is simple ‘Kerry residents promoting and supporting Kerry based companies’. We hope that everyone will come out and support the event

on May 13 and as part of celebrating business with the people who live, work and study here. We have scheduled a whole host of family entertainment, so there’s something for everyone and for all ages to enjoy. It’s important to remember that as well as using local services or purchasing local products, it’s equally important for Kerry residents to have a positive understanding of the wealth of amazing companies, organisations and institutions that operate throughout the county. This event also sets out to attract and lure additional industry and potential career changers across the county bounds, by positioning Kerry as one of the best places to live and work. We truly believe that this is a fundamental ingredient to drive growth and develop a healthy local economy for our future.” “This year we are encouraging exhibitors to roll out the red carpet, ramp up targeted social media

campaigns and launch special promotions that give EXPO visitors a reason to sample their products or take an interest in the services they offer. It is important that exhibitors should build wordof-mouth and social media buzz among first-time customers and expo visitors and in-turn create memorable experiences,” says Elin Sorensen of GHQ Design. Organisers say that a number of firms are focusing their attention on creating a corporate culture where employees become more engaged with the corporate brand and in turn develop a greater pride of workplace. Fred McDonogh, Director of Redchair Recruitment says that: “Business/community events such as the Kerry EXPO can in fact bring employees together in a different light, where they get to know one another better when interacting outside of the workplace.” We ask residents across Kerry to visit the EXPO and support the growth of our county. Entrance to the event is FREE of CHARGE. In addition there will be lots of free fun and entertainment. Special bus services are available from various parts of the county to the INEC in Killarney on May 13. There will be park and ride facilities around the INEC and bus routes and schedules are available on kerryexpo.ie.

Jill O’Donoghue of Killarney Toning & Beauty outlines the many benefits of using Sothys skincare products

Why I’ve Been A Long-Term Fan Of Sothys Sothys has been a long-term resident in my skincare regime since I was young. I’ve been a long-term fan! Introducing six performance serums, formulated with potent active ingredients meant to target and diminish signs of ageing at every level. The lightweight serums are designed for layering while providing quick absorption to the skin. 1. Unifying Youth Serum - Cream gel texture mattifies and smoothens wrinkles while reducing dark spots and large pores. 2. Detoxifying Anti-Free Radicals Youth Serum - Glowy texture with anti-dull complexion pigments aids in revitalising the skin while protecting the skin from free radicals. 3. Perfect Shape Youth Serum - Instantly firms up facial contours while smoothing décolleté. 4. Reconstructive Youth Serum - Gel balm texture softens while giving the skin the plump effect by intensely nourishing it. 5. Firming-Specific Youth Serum- Special Stretch Gel texture aids in restricting the skin from sagging, while toning and lifting the skin. 6. Wrinkle-Specific Youth Serum - Melting texture and soft focus powder softens fine lines while

filling up wrinkles creating a dewy look. Sothys Youth Serums can be layered depending on each skin’s needs… I’m currently using two serums (Unifying and Detoxifying) in the morning and at night for two weeks now and I love them! The scents are divine and it instantly puts you in a good mood. I enjoy layering the serums, ensuring each of my concerns are taken care of.

Garden Magic Choosing The Right Kind Of Hoe Have you ever had the experience of everything going at once? Dishwasher, kettle, washing machine… or, TV, stereo and car? It always seems to be in threes. Well, I recently had a day when shovel, rake and hoe all came away from their handles. Which is really not that strange as I am the worst when it comes to putting away my tools. Also I abuse my tools, using the shovel as a crowbar and the rake as a rock crusher. I blame my soil! In any case, it was time for new tools. And things have changed out there! To my great joy, there are now tools with fibreglass handles – lightweight, cannot rot and very strong. And colourful to boot! I have taken fibreglass rake and shovel out to work, and can say they are every bit as capable as their ash handled counterparts. I was dubious at first, and had receipt at the ready to declare them unfit for purpose, but I can say I will never go back! Hoes are a different story, however. When I bought my hoe, years ago, there was one on the market. A draw hoe. Then the Dutch hoe became popular. Now I see edge hoes, onion hoes, knife hoes, oscillating hoes, razor hoes and heart-shaped hoes. How are they different? Essentially they are all weeding tools. A knife hoe would be used between paving slabs. Razor hoes are usually short-handled and

used for scraping or slicing weeds and especially moss. Onion hoes are designed for weeding in small areas, such as onion patches, but also rockeries. Dutch hoes slice through roots just under the surface of the soil and are ideal for well cultivated or light ground. The draw hoe is for heavier soil and when I use it, it becomes an excavator and soil-breaker in one… An edge hoe looks like something you might take a shot at a golf ball with, but is a very handy tool in dense flower beds due to it’s narrow design. Oscillating hoes are the ideal hoe. They can be used in a forwards and backwards motion, loosening and cutting through weeds easily. Secateurs also come in many different shapes and sizes. There are basically two types: bypass and anvil. The anvil secateurs has one flat, blunt, usually rubber edge. This crushes one side of whatever you are cutting, and should only be used for dead material. I would recommend every gardener have one type, the bypass secateurs. It cuts cleanly through all types of plant material. As with all, or most, utility objects, quality is often related to price. I would certainly say that a lot of tools are worth spending money on but if you are on a budget, and most of us are, invest in the items you will use most.

Hamilton Baku To Winning Ways

Lewis Hamilton had not had the best of luck in Azerbaijan. He had never managed a top four finish. He was also winless in the last six races. But, in a crazy Grand Prix, it all came good for the Mercedes driver thanks to some extremely good fortune. Having run behind Vettel in the early stages, Hamilton’s hopes of victory on the Baku City Circuit looked all but over when he suffered a double-front lockup forcing him to stop first among the frontrunners. A late Safety Car intervention triggered when the Red Bulls collided spectacularly, and Hamilton’s luck turned around dramatically. First Vettel, who had dropped to second following

his pit stop, outbraked himself attacking Vallteri Bottas for the lead into Turn 1 allowing Hamilton into second. Then, with just two laps to go, Bottas suffered a heart-breaking exit after a spectacular debris-induced tyre blow out. That left Hamilton in the clear to snap a six-race winless run. Despite vaulting into the championship lead, Hamilton admitted he needs to improve as a driver, as do Mercedes, who struggled for form all weekend in Baku. Having arrived in Baku with a nine-point deficit to Vettel in the standings, Hamilton now heads the Ferrari driver by four points, with Kimi Raikkonen 18 further back in third.

Meeke & Nagle Seventh In Argentina

Kris Meeke and Paul Nagle moved up one position on the final day of Rally Argentina to finish in seventh overall. The Citroen crew are now sixth in the championship standings after five events. Toyota’s Ott Tanak won the event ahead of Hyundai duo Thierry Neuville and Dani Sordo. Meeke and Nagle produced a solid display in the final stages after dropping from second to eighth on day three. The crew were second at the midway point of the four-day event but suffered a puncture six kilometres from the end of day three’s final stage, which saw them drop down to eighth. They were fifth in special stage 18 to claim the final bonus point as they finished three minutes and 25.7 seconds behind Tanak in the final standings. Ford’s Sebastian Ogier leads the drivers’ championship on 100 points. Tanak’s third WRC career win keeps him in third while second-placed Neuville is now just 10 points behind Ogier. Meeke and Nagle sit on 43 points after five events, with their sole podium for the season so far coming in Mexico with a third-place finish. They won their maiden WRC event in Argentina in 2015, but struggled there last year when they twice crashed out. On his return to the championship in the second Citroen seat, Waterford’s Craig Breen rolled out of the event during stage 11.

Sport Glen flesk midfi elder Jeff O

’Donoghu e

In all your years playing with Glenflesk, how does last Saturday’s win over St Mary’s rank? It was definitely the best day I’ve had in a Glenflesk jersey, without a shadow of a doubt. I’ve lost two semi-finals already so to get over that hurdle was great. You were up against Bryan Sheehan in midfield. What’s it like to play against him? Very tough. You can’t leave him shoot anyway, I learned that in the first half! He’s just an outstanding player really. One of the toughest I’ve ever marked. He’s a powerful man and his kicking… Every one of his shots just seems to curl in at the last minute. He’s an unbelievable point kicker. You managed to get over the line in spite of his best efforts. It was a serious team performance. Savage. One of the best displays that I’ve ever been a part of with Glenflesk. But we’ve had a good few performances now this year since the Intermediate started. The first few games as well we put in good performances.

Darragh Roche and your brother Lee were particularly impressive in the full forward line. How important have they been in your championship run? They’re our scorers. We just get the ball to them and they do the rest. They’ve been outstanding really. The last day you could kick them in any ball and they just won it and stuck it over the bar. It was such a relief when you’re trying to hold out Mary’s at the back with the forwards they have, and Lee and Darragh were putting the ball over the bar every time we got it up to them. That was one of the main reasons we won the game. And they’ve been doing it all year. Hopefully they can keep it up for the next day. What’s it like playing with the brother? You picked him out with a good few passes the last day. We’ve been playing together now with a good few years but of course we have a better understanding than most fellas, like most brothers would have. I’m sure Darragh and Ian (Roche) are the same. But I love it. Denis Reen has come in this year to manage the team. What kind of impact has he had? Unreal. Adam O’Reilly is there as well and they’re two very good men football-wise. They know their tactics. I’m not cutting the management of the last few years but they’re just after bringing it on another level. They’re even after bringing in statisticians and that’s all new to us. Every training is different. We haven’t done the same drill twice. It’s very good, to be fair. And we knew what we were getting when we were getting him. And the players have obviously bought into it? Straight away, from our first night on the 12th of January. We had a meeting and he set the goals for the year. We’re achieving them so far anyway.

We’re a big fa m out in Glenfles ily Everyone row k. behind each o s in ther

You’ll face Kilcummin in the final. Is there a big rivalry between the clubs? I’ve very good friends in Kilcummin. I went to school with a pile of them and some of my best friends are up there. But if you lose to Templenoe, for example, you might not see them for another six months. You’ll be looking at Kilcummin people every day of the week, so that’s more of a reason to win! We came together this year for the Oskars and it was unbelievable. The buzz around after that was great. I was up at their semi-final the last day and there were nearly as many Glenflesk as there were Kilcummin. The craic between the two sets of fans when the final whistle went, and they were on about the Oskars again. It’ll be an interesting few days. What do you think their strengths are as a team? Kevin McCarthy obviously stands out and Brendan Kealy. They’re very big around the middle as well. They’re physical. They have Kevin Gorman, Kieran Murphy, Shane McSweeney… Massive men around the middle. Where we’d be a young and light team, they’ve a lot of experience being a senior club for 20 years, so that will stand for a lot the next day. But they can mix it too. They have serious footballers: the likes of Kev, Gary O’Leary is back there this year, Podge Nagle and Matt Keane probably changed the game for them when he came off the bench. They beat Templenoe, who would beat a lot of senior clubs around Kerry, so they’re some outfit to be fair to them. It’s Glenflesk’s first Intermediate final in 19 years and only the club’s the second ever. How big would it be to win it and to go senior? Massive. We’ve never won it. The great Glenflesk teams that people go on about - the likes of my father and a few lads who have six O’Donoghue Cups - they could never win it so it would just be massive. You can see it already with the buzz around. I was chatting to a fella from work who was in Spillane’s Bar the last night and he said you’d nearly get a belt of a ball inside there with all the talk about the match! Haha! I’d say there’ll be a special atmosphere back in Tralee on Sunday… Unbelievable I’d say. With the Oskars and everything, the final was just made for Glenflesk and Kilcummin. We drew earlier in the year in the County League and if we beat Listry in the O’Donoghue Cup, we’ll go on and play Kilcummin. We can’t get enough of each other. You mentioned your dad and I know you’re from a big Glenflesk GAA family. That must make playing in a huge game like this even more special? Yeah it’s a big family out in Glenflesk. Everyone rows in behind each other, it wouldn’t just be my family. It’s every family, to be honest. There’s a big tradition there. If we win, the place will shut down for a week! All the best anyway and thanks for talking to me. No bother!

Congrats first of all on your win over Templenoe. It was hard-fought to say the least… It was. Jeez, it was a very tough game. Templenoe are a good team, very strong. They’ve been unlucky the last few years so we knew it was going to be tough and it would probably go to the wire. Luckily enough, we came out on the right side of it in the end. What do you think was the key? Kevin McCarthy’s goal gave us a lift when we needed it. They had their purple patch in the first half as well and we didn’t really perform, but to go in just three points down playing against the breeze… I suppose things could have been worse. We knew that if we could perform in the second half, we were still well in the game. How influential has Kevin been this season? Kev is playing good stuff now at the moment. He’s obviously inside with Kerry and he has much more potential to reach as well, no doubt. He’s doing well but in fairness there are other guys there. There’s been a nice spread across the team. But he’s a great lad to have around the place. Your backs forced a lot of turnovers down the stretch. Is that kind of intense tackling one of your strengths as a team? Yeah, I suppose it was a frantic kind of game, especially towards the end. I don’t know was there too much method to the madness; it was just doing what needed to be done and the lads stood up well. But Templenoe were unlucky. The ball could have bounced another way once or twice and it could have been different. You’re now 60 minutes away from bouncing back to senior at the first time of asking. Were there any fears after last year’s relegation that things might go backwards again? We have had a couple of disappointing years. We were down numbers and stuff. But sometimes you need to take a step back to go forward and that’s what happened last year. I suppose that fear is always at the back of your mind that things could get worse - it can be a slippery slope when you do start sliding. We were just conscious at the start of the year to halt the slide and try and reverse it. We’re in a final now and it’s a bonus. We would have been happy to just consolidate this year but we’re there now and we’ll see how it goes. How important is it for Kilcummin to get back to senior level? It’s not a big, huge talking point or anything. I know it’s the oldest cliché in the book but we’re just playing each game as it comes. It’s not that it’s this big thing to get back senior. We were senior for 20 years and it’s obviously great to play at the top level of football - in

Kerry, of all places, it’s a privilege - but we just wanted to get the show back on the road this year and get lads back enjoying their football. We’ll see where it takes us. Glenflesk stand in your way in the final. What do you make of them as a team? They’re a good East Kerry club with a good tradition and they’re really building something again now. They’re a young team with some dangerous players like Lee O’Donoghue, Darragh Roche, Jeff O’Donoghue… Those lads are as good a player as you’ll come across in the county. Denis Reen has gone in there this year and they’re taking things to the next level. You have to admire what they’re doing out there. We played them in the league and the game could have gone either way but it’s going to take a very, very good performance for us to be there or thereabouts the next day. We know that. Glenflesk will probably be favourites. On a personal level, you decided to step away from the Kerry fold last year. How have you found not being involved with Kerry after such a long time? Yeah it was obviously a bit strange at times, especially at the start of the year when you’re normally going through the slog. But it was great to be back and going through that slog with the club, which I haven’t been able to do for a long number of years. Just to be able to get back in with your friends and put the head down, shoulder to the wheel and really try to give something back to the club. It has been really, really enjoyable. I think the way the fixtures have been played there in the month April, from a club point of view, has been great. We’ve picked up momentum and it has been more enjoyable rather than the scattergun approach before where you might have a game every couple of months. But I’m really enjoying where I am at the moment. Stepping away from the county has also allowed you to explore some other avenues. You’re coaching with Offaly and you’ve set up a YouTube channel for goalkeepers. How are those ventures going? The coaching is a brand new experience. It’s something I thought that down the road I’d like to get into and an opportunity came along sooner than I thought it might. So I said, “look, we’ll go for it”. I have family connections up in Offaly as well so it seemed like a good fit. I’m fortunate that I’m still playing while also getting the experience on the coaching side of things at intercounty level. So yeah, really happy and just soaking it all up. The YouTube channel is just something that myself and Kieran (Fleming) started up as there was a real interest from a lot of young goalkeepers in particular who want to improve but for various reasons aren’t able to get the coaching they need. I started @thegaagk on social media as a place where goalkeepers can get tips and training ideas for when they are on the training field themselves. It’s very enjoyable and the feedback has been great so far so we’ll stick at it and keep trying to help. All the best with everything, and good luck in the final on Sunday. Thanks Adam!

The Crokes Aren’t Unbeatable. But Who’s Going To Beat Them? Words: Adam Moynihan

Dr Crokes’ dominance in the Kerry Club Championship continued on Sunday as they romped to a comprehensive 10-point victory over Dingle to claim their fifth title in the past seven years. The worrying thing about this result for the rest of Kerry is that, according to the bookies at least, Dingle are the most likely team to challenge Crokes for this year’s County Championship. If last weekend is anything to go by, the gap between Crokes and the rest of Kerry shows no signs of closing just yet. The problem with stopping the Crokes is this: who do you target? Gooch? He scored three points (one from play) and they still won by 10. Tony Brosnan was the only Crokes player who kicked more than two points from play (0-4). Kieran O’Leary got two, as did Micheál Burns. After that you’re looking at one point apiece for Brian Looney, Johnny Buckley, Daithí Casey, Fionn Fitzgerald and Shane Murphy. Even if you managed to completely shut down Crokes’ three top starting scorers – Brosnan, Gooch and Leary - they still would have won. (A bit reductive, I know, but there’s an element of truth to it.) With most club teams if you keep their two best forwards quiet you’re sorted. Crokes have too many weapons spread too far out across the field. It’s virtually impossible to guard against them all. And that’s before the substitutes come into play. Gavin White, potentially a Kerry player this year if he stays fit, came on and scored a goal. Name another team in the county that David Shaw wouldn’t start for,

despite his tender years? Paul Clarke always seems to make an impression and Michael Potts has the makings of a great footballer. Then you have Shane Doolan and Eoin Brosnan coming in and adding heaps of experience. Those are just the six who came on the last day. There are others. Their rivals can strive to reach Crokes’ level by chang-

ing their management, improving their preparations and adapting their tactics but, when it comes down to it, the key ingredient is talent. Crokes just have more of it at the moment. That doesn’t necessarily mean that the County Championship, when it rolls around, is a foregone conclusion. In the end, the competition will ultimately come down to a one-off game and the team with the most talent doesn’t always win. This Crokes team aren’t unbeatable. But who’s going to beat them?

There were farcical scenes in Derreen on Sunday as scores of Kilcummin and Templenoe fans were left stuck outside queueing to get in, even after the crucial Intermediate semi-final began. As our picture – which was taken two minutes after the ball was thrown in - shows, a large number of would-be spectators missed the opening exchanges of one of the most important fixtures of the year. I’ve been going up to Legion games my whole life and I’ve never seen the like. (Just to clarify, as host club Legion have nothing whatsoever to do with the gate or the stewarding, nor do they get a cent from the county board for their troubles.) Incredibly, there were only two people taking money at the gate on Sunday, hence the backlog. The day before I was back in Killorglin for the other semi between Glenflesk and St Mary’s and the county board had a van outside the ground with I think 4-6 girls selling tickets through the windows. These vans were brought in for big matches a few years ago and they’ve been greeted with mixed reviews but when there are major games at club grounds (where there’s generally only one entrance), there’s no denying that having a van with multiple sellers is more efficient. So why did the county board not have a van in Derreen for the Kilcummin v Templenoe game, which was bound to attract a bumper crowd? I put the question to secretary Peter Twiss and he told me that the van was unavailable as it was back at the club final between Crokes and Dingle in Tralee. The van? As in, there’s only one? A second one might be useful in case, you know, there just happens to be two games of football taking place at the same time in Kerry. But then again, what are the chances of that happening?

Rugby News ... Words: Liam Murphy

Last weekend, Munster were in action at Thomond Park in the PRO 14 as Johan Van Graan’s men welcomed Ulster for the final round proper. With a home tie against Edinburgh coming up this weekend in the semi-final qualifier knockouts, Munster made wholesale changes to the team which lost to Racing 92 the weekend before, making 14 personnel changes in all. This gave the younger and less experienced players a chance to shine. Veterans Mike Sherry and James Cronin earned their 100th caps adding plenty of experience to the set-up, while Ulster provided a strong team with captain Rory Best scoring two tries. The game ended 24 points apiece and Munster move on to the semi-final. Fingers crossed for some silverware for the men in red this month! Last week, I attended the Munster Rugby player awards at the Clay-

The Mon soccer team who won the Kerry section of the SPAR FAI Primary Schools 5s in Mounthawk Park, Tralee.

Killarney RFC Minis The Best In Munster ton Silversprings Hotel in Cork. It was great to see all the players at the event given the huge disappointment suffered the previous weekend in Bordeaux. There certainly was a determined feeling of wanting to put things right in the remaining matches of the season. A full house was on hand to witness the awards where Keith Earls won the Munster Rugby Player of the Year and, as luck would have it, we were seated with Kerry’s own JJ Hanrahan! The big news for Killarney and West Munster was that Killarney RFC Minis were announced Munster Rugby Minis Club of the Year – a huge achievement for all involved. This is due to hard work on and off the pitch and is a testament to the work we are doing with the kids who love the game. Well done to everyone who now take a well-deserved break for the summer with minis, returning in early September for a brand new season!

RESULTS: Na Gael 2-14, Fossa 0-11; U-14 Boys, Fossa 5-16, Kenmare 5-03. FÉILE: Fossa were very unfortunate to lose in the semifinal of the division two Féile final played in Legion on Saturday. A great first half against a strong wind saw Fossa go in at half time a goal to the good. Although playing great football Fossa failed to convert their chances in the second half and Legion scored two killer goals to win by a point. Sam Buckley, Peadar Kelliher and Tom Cahillane caught the eye but unfortunately it wasn’t enough to get us across the line.

CLUB NEWS: Enda Walshe, who served as chairman, has decided to step away from his position due to work demands as he begins a new job profile. It would be difficult to catalogue the amount of work and time he gave to his club but suffice to say one could see him washing out a dressing room at one point and holding an executive meeting a few hours later, no task too big or too small and all done with a willing effort. In this vein he has now been added to the senior team management and has already got stuck in with the same vigour as before. Hard to replace someone as dedicated as Enda but we were more than fortunate to have Fergal Moynihan step

Dr. Crokes Juvenile

Dr Crokes U12A: 1-13 Kilcummin U12A 1-13. Following a cracking contest, an injury time point from Kilcummin earned the hosts a well deserved draw. Kilcummin were six points ahead at half time despite good defending from Adam Byrne and Anton Donchev, along with saves from Mark O Carroll. Crokes were much improved in the second half, helped by Neil O Carroll and Leah McMahon in midfield. Gearoid Sugrue and Dara Griffin were also tighter in defence. Matthew Moynihan scored three points, Noah Sexton two points, Liam Hennigan three points and Mikie Murphy with a goal. Oisin O’Sullivan worked hard when introduced. Dr.Crokes U12: Amber 3-8 Kilcummin U12 B 3-8. Played in tough conditions, both teams battled very well throughout the 50 minutes and a draw was a fair result. For Crokes, best on the night were Kieran Moloney in goal, who made some vital saves, and Cathal Sugrue and Brian Titus in defence. Dara O’Sullivan did well getting forward and in attack Ben Kelliher scored 1-4. Special mention must go to Killian White who scored a great goal when introduced in the second half. Credit must be given again to both teams playing such good football in testing conditions.
