Fire believed to have started accidentally “Entire National Park at risk from unrepairable fire damage” - local wildlife expert says | By Sean Moriarty Forrest fires in Killarney National Park are putting the entire park and Muckross House at risk - wellknown local nature lover and Mangerton resident Frank Lewis said this week. 22 firefighters from Killarney and Killor-

glin Fire Stations battled the flames which could be seen from miles around - for more than eight hours. The blaze, which destroyed 100 acres of scrublands near Torc Waterfall and the locally known Cardiac Hill, is believed to have started on the Old Kenmare Road, a popular hiking route, on the northern face of Mangerton Mountain, and quick-

ly spread to the Torc Waterfall area. Once the fire was contained near the summit of Mangerton, firefighters left for a short break and returned later on Saturday morning for a further three hours. County fire officials and local Gardai are still investigating the cause of the fire. The burning of dead grasslands is legal

between September 1 and February 28. Farmers burn commonage to facilitate the growth of new grass for livestock grazing purposes. However, Friday night’s inferno was not on commonage land and unconfirmed reports suggest it was caused by a irresponsibly discarded cigarette butt or the remains of a picnic or barbecue. “If this fire spread any further in it could have taken out the entire tree cover of the national park, it could have taken out a place like Muckross House,” Mr Lewis, the presenter of Radio Kerry’s Saturday Supplement, said. “Controlled burning of land is for the benefit of everyone, and back in the day the Herbert Estate staff would burn certain parts every five years in a controlled way. But these wildfires are irresponsible and it is only a matter of time before the damage done will take generations to repair.” Scrubland on the mountain top can grow as high as one metre and according to local sources this is adding to the fire risk. Locals believe that by extending the burning season in to the middle of March and by allowing annual burning of the same areas would reduce the risk of fires getting out of control. They also believe that this would solve the roaming deer issues on main roads through the National Park. “Deer want to graze on fresh grass and it is no longer available on high ground,” added a source who did not want to be named. “If the land was burned once a year it would reduce the risk and fresh grass would grow on the mountain top so the deer would not roam on the roads.”

Residents face €4k sewerage scheme connection fee | By Sean Moriarty Residents in Kilcummin have branded Wednesday evening’s public meeting on a proposed sewage scheme as “an election gimmick”. Irish Water invited local residents to a public information meeting to outline a proposed sewage scheme that would link the parish to the Killarney town waste water network. The €3 million project will involve the building of a new pump and additional infrastructure works. Work is expected to start this year and be completed by the end of 2020. At Wednesday’s meeting it emerged that it would cost €4,000 per house to connect to the new pipe network. Residents say with local elections scheduled for May 24, that the unveiling of

plans is just a vote-gathering exercise and that nothing will be done. They say that essential road repairs in the parish are being put on the long-finger because the sewerage network would necessitate digging the road again. “I think it is an election gimmick,” Knockattgle resident Pat O’Sullivan told the Kil-

larney Advertiser yesterday (Thursday). “It has been on the long-finger for years but our roads are in an atrocious state. Regardless of the sewerage scheme, the roads are destroying our cars. How are people going to pay this €4,000 connection fee, most of the people here are only barely paying their mortgage and

many houses here are only rented, so who is going to pay that?” Another local resident, who asked not to be named, is in favour of the scheme, but she too warned that the road network in the area needs to be addressed first. Additional costs would also have to be absorbed by the residents to bring the final portion of the network from the roadside connection to the house or outbuilding. “This is very important. I know it is delaying housing and other buildings, and the roads have to be done,” she said. “The connection fee is part of the procedure, it is what is done in other places.” Irish Water’s spokeswoman Marie Sheehan said the Connection Charging Policy took effect on April 1 2019 with the average cost per-single domestic unit for a standard connection being €2,272 for water and €3,929 for wastewater.

Fassbender is all set for Rally of the Lakes Hollywood star and Oscar nominated Michael Fassbender is all set for this year’s Cartell.ie International Rally of the Lakes - after stopping home to Kerry at the weekend. The Killarney native is delighted to be part of this year’s special 40th anniversary event, which takes place in three weeks-time over the May Bank Holiday weekend - after being invited to become an ambassador for the rally by Cormac Casey, owner of the Killarney Advertiser and KC Print, 12 months ago. And Fassbender’s participation is certainly grabbing the headlines in recent

weeks, as the actor has twice flown back to Killarney for promotional days with Killarney District and Motor Club (KDMC). Dermot Healy, Clerk of the Course, this week said that it’s very exciting to have Michael on board this year as it’s generating plenty of positive interest in the event. “We approached Michael in April last year and he was very excited about getting in-

volved in the sport,” Dermot told the Killarney Advertiser this week. “Further conversations with him led to his actual participation in the event. I’m delighted that we’ve been able to make this opportunity happen for this event. Hopefully we’ll have an enjoyable weekend of motorsport.” A promotional day on Saturday, hosted by KDMC, which took place at the Gle-

neagle Hotel, Molls Gap and Killarney Racecourse, provided cars ranging from a Porsche 911, two Ford Escort Mk2s and a Ford Puma S1600. The Porsche is of particular interest to Michael as he is currently driving with the German marque in the Porsche 911 Cup series. “The objective was to increase the profile of the event and this is working very well with the community. We got a huge amount of support from the community which we are very grateful for. Hopefully we’ll see Michael on many iconic stages in Killarney in years to come.” Dermot Healy and his team are expecting a large entry at this year’s event. “Interest from overseas is a welcome return with the introduction of an Irish Rallying first Lakes Rallyfest Ireland category. Pre-1990 cars will compete in the event reflecting the “Golden Era” of rallying. It promises to be a major crowd pleaser,” he said. Cormac added that he’s delighted to be a part of this year’s event. “The Killarney Advertiser is delighted to be an associated sponsor for this year’s event particularly this year for its 40th year,” he said.

Killarney mom plans national service dog programme for schools | By Michelle Crean After fundraising for a specialist dog for her son who suffers with Autism - and seeing the enormous benefits - a Killarney mother is now hoping to roll out a national plan to bring service dogs to schools. Deirdre and Shane Horgan, from Laccabane Village, got their dogs Bosco and Fifi through My Canine Companion Autism Service Dogs, for their son Fionn, following a huge fundraising drive. However, after Deirdre, who teaches in Pobalscoil Inbhear Scéine, Kenmare, started bringing the dogs to school to help socialise them, she says she has also seen the

enormous benefits for the students. And it’s been such a huge success that now she’s planning to meet with the dog service over the Easter holidays to see if a programme could be rolled out to schools nationally. She says seven year-old Fionn faces challenges with his condition, but since getting Bosco last year they have seen an improvement in his social skills as the dog has had such a calming influence. With the support of Principal Dermot Healy, the students have not only become more aware of Autism and special needs, but are helping to fundraise for the charity also, she explained to the Killarney Advertiser this week.

“Bosco spends his days in the ASD unit where the students are benefiting greatly from his presence, along with the whole school community,” she said. “Bosco joined the school as a 12 week old puppy and a year later he loves going to school.” Six Transition Year students are involved in his training and they work on social interaction, distraction and basic training of the service puppy, she explained. “Leadership and guidance has also been given to SNAs, teachers and students who interact with Bosco on a daily basis. SNAs and teachers involved have noticed a significant positive effect on students. Bosco has helped lessen the anxiety of

one student, just being able to rub Bosco calms the situation. I’m hoping to meet with My Canine Companion over Easter as we’re looking at coming up with a programme for schools nationally.”

Marty Whelan loves Killarney singer’s music! | By Michelle Crean Top RTE broadcaster Marty Whelan has this week chosen a Killarney singer’s latest record as his top music recommendation.

New appointments face a challenging future

The RTE Lyric FM presenter, who also co-hosts the RTE One Winning Streak show, chose Grace Foley’s record ‘Unleashed’ for his 'Marty Recommends' weekly spot on the show. Grace released her record ‘Unleashed’ in December and it has received rave reviews, including recent praise from the presenter. The news comes after Grace was interviewed on his show last week. On Wednesday last, Grace met Marty and he was immediately complimentary of her voice and her record. The presenter described her voice as 'so different' and 'fantastic'. He encouraged people to book the Killarney singer and also said 'the voice just hit us'. One of her songs was played each morning this week on his show and they have also being posting regularly on social

media about the singer. Grace, who is currently planning an Irish tour and will be performing at Cahersiveen Festival of Music and Art in August and at Kilkenny Yulefest in December, said it was an honour to be featured on his show. “I am overwhelmed by the positive feedback through the show and cannot wait to see what comes next on my exciting journey.”

Killarney’s Bernadette Randles of Randles Hotels has this week been appointed Chairperson of the Kerry Branch of the Irish Hotel Federation (IHF). | By Sean Moriarty Other appointments at this week’s branch AGM include Emer Corridan of Cahernane House who has been appointed Vice-Chairperson, Niamh O’Shea Treasurer, and Padraig McGillicuddy of Ballygarry House Hotel and Spa, Tralee will assume the position of PRO. It is a very proud moment for Bernadette Randles given her family’s connection to the hospitality industry in Kerry. The Randles family operate the Dromhall Hotel and the Randles Court Hotel on the Muckross Road. With Brexit looming and the higher rate of VAT imposed on the sector since last year’s budget, she accepts she has rocky waters to navigate. “I am delighted,” she said. “Our family have been engrained in tourism for a long time and it’s an honour for me to take on the role,” she said. “There are always challenges and triumphs. The

industry has been riding the crest of a wave for the past few years but there are stormy seas ahead and we need to navigate them. We need to be heard at national level on key issues and we have always been a strong voice in Dublin and we will continue lobby issues in our industry. A key priority is to ensure our industry remains at the heart of Government policy particularly in relation to investment in marketing and product development, attracting more visitors to the region in off peak and tackling the high cost of doing business in Ireland.” While Brexit is a major concern for every industry in Ireland, there are many more issues directly connected to the hotel industry she hopes to address. “The obvious issues are Brexit, economic uncertainty and a slowdown in European growth. We also face a recruitment challenge and we are going to work closely with IT Tralee and the schools to encourage children to pursue careers in hospitality."

Powerful image wins national art competition A powerful image focusing on mental health has helped one local student to win first place in a national competition. Patrick Dineen, a Fifth Year student in Killarney Community College, won the main prize in the senior art category of the Mental Health Ireland Art and Photography Competition 2019. His piece, under the theme ‘five ways to well-being’, will now be one of 12 chosen to feature in the Mental Health Ireland 2020

calendar. The 40 final pieces, chosen out of over 2000 entries, were on display in St Patrick’s Cathedral for the week leading up to the prize giving evening last Thursday, where Patrick received a prize of a €500 One4All voucher. “I wanted to keep it simple but effective,” Patrick told the Killarney Advertiser. Art teacher Michelle Mahony added that Patrick’s image is very moving. “It is powerful. The image speaks for itself,” she said.

Monument planned to mark World Ploughing Championships An over-sight by organisers of the World Ploughing Championships in Killarney 65 years ago will be corrected next month with a monument on Mission Road. | By Sean Moriarty Ireland was the second host nation, after Canada, of the World Ploughing Championships, held where Lackabane Golf Club is now situated. Tradition has it that every year the host nation builds a peace cairn on the site of the championships - but this did not happen in 1954. Thanks to the efforts of the South Kerry Ploughing committee this will be corrected on May 11. A site, on Mission Road, near the en-

trance to Killarney Park has been identified. The peace cairn will be built using one large stone from each of the participating nations 65 years ago – a total of 13 countries competed that year. One rock will carry a Latin inscription, that translates in to “We live off the soil”, as a message of peace to all nations. It will also carry the World Ploughing and National Ploughing logos. The Killarney peace cairn is being organised by the National Ploughing As-

sociation with direction from the world governing body. South Kerry Ploughing is helping to organise the unveiling ceremony in Killarney. A souvenir programme will also be published to mark the occasion. “I first became interested in the history of this when I found photos of the German team practicing on my grandfather’s farm, they were driving Porsche tractors,” said local organiser Tom Leslie. “Im looking for locals who might have photographs and memorabilia from the event 65 years ago for inclusion in the programme and other displays.” Tom can be contacted on 087 238 3809.

On Tuesday, two phones were confiscated in the District Court in Killarney after Judge David Waters ordered Gardai to "seize" the loudly ringing phones. The judge then issued a general warning to the public to switch the phones off or they would be confiscated. “Don’t text or look at phones in court!” Judge Waters warned. A ban on mobile phone use by the public was introduced last November. Chief Justice Frank Clarke announced a ban on texting or using social media in courtrooms - but breaches of the direction occur. A spokesperson for the courts service said the direction applies to all courts and mobile phone use by members of the public is banned in all courts. Bona fide members of the press were allowed phone use because they knew the rules applied to court proceedings and court reporting and what they can and cannot tweet, the spokesman said. “Most people coming into court now made sure phones were switched off,” the courts service spokesman said. However, phones going off and interrupting the court still occurs in Kerry during court proceedings, at both District and Circuit Court levels. The confiscated phones were handed back at the end of the proceedings.

New security arrangements at University Hospital Kerry University Hospital Kerry (UHK) in conjunction with An Garda Síochána have launched a Hospital Watch scheme to cut crime in the hospital. Launched on Tuesday of this week, the new scheme will enhance security for both staff and visitors. The ‘Hospital Watch’ will combine proactive crime prevention measures and seek the public’s co-operation with issues affecting staff and patients in relation to security and safety in hospitals. As part of the ‘Hospital Watch’, a policy will be implemented by hospital management and staff to raise an awareness of crime, the fear of crime and provides ways of reducing crime on its premises.

A multidisciplinary Hospital Watch committee has been formed and Garda Cathy Murphy from Tralee station has been appointed as the Hospital Watch

Liaison Garda. The new scheme will include enhanced CCTV cover, new and more-regulated visiting hours and restricted access to

wards outside of visiting hours. Meanwhile the Kerry branch of the Psychiatric Nurses Association announced that a new four-bed High Observation Unit (called the Brandon Suite) attached to the Acute Admission Unit will open next Tuesday. The opening of the €2 million special purpose unit will greatly help in the treatment and management of residents with episodes of challenging and disturbed behaviour and ensure a safer and more secure environment for both residents and staff at the unit, Jamie Kelly, PNA Rep, Kerry explained. “The Close Observation Brandon Unit will have three staff nurses assigned by day and two staff nurses assigned by night.”

Columnist ANNE LUCEY gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry and beyond

People are fleeing what passes for local politics now “If local government is not local, it is nothing,” the Director for Local and Regional Governance at the Dept of Government and Politics in UCC wrote in the Irish Examiner this week. Local government in other words is about people from their local area representing the communities where they live and with meaningful powers. Bigger does not mean more efficient, Aodh Quinlivan wrote, and interestingly it is Killarney Town Council (KTC) he uses as an example of efficiency. At the time of its abolition, KTC had the highest rate take in Kerry, and the lowest rate in the euro on the ratepayers, far lower than on businesses in Tralee, for example. “Town Councils were the most efficient element within the local government system, in terms of being self-financing and maintaining commercial rates at a lower level than their county council counterparts,” wrote the academic. We all know what has happened since:

the 14 million or so rates money from Killarney has been grabbed by the Tralee mandarins and spread liberally around the county, on the county capital and its tourism efforts. Not that it is doing much good. Tralee looks well, its street paving and sidewalks are completely renewed, there are huge cash injections for studies and conferences and supports for all - I repeat - “for all” of its tourist attractions and festivals, but there isn’t a sinner on the streets. Not a soul. And for a third level town, it is a ghost town at night. Perhaps now Tralee is twinned with Palestine, thanks largely to Palestinians old friends in Sinn Fein - they can expect direct flights into Kerry from Palestine, or maybe from Israel, just to see the only town in Ireland twinned with a Pal-

estinian town! Still, I have a feeling the Israelis will be coming to Killarney to see the wonderful statue to local man Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty who saved so many Jewish people. Could there be a more telling difference about the great mental divide that persists between the Norman town of Tralee and the tourist town of Killarney in the heart of old Gaelic Ireland than these very contrasting international links between the two towns? It is to be hoped there will not be a wall anytime soon! I digress. As we have observed, people are fleeing what passes for local politics now. Fine Gael cannot get a second candidate in Killarney. Unless people like Niall Botty O’Callaghan and one or two others join, this is set to be one of the stalest and most unexciting elections in quite a while. As Dr Quinlivan pointed out, the result of the flight from local government and the abolition of town councils is “Councils that are dominated by middle-aged men and elderly, grey-

haired men, who can afford to be fulltime, local public representatives”. Now, the problem is, the council in Killarney had already been that male soldier. Killarney was one of the few outgoing councils in 2014 not to have a woman councillor. And since councillors were paid a salary, there is less interest and far less passion. What we need of course is the return of town councils but on a smaller scale, with meetings at night, and a social drink afterwards. It might be an idea to limit the councillors to two terms - they get two runs, then they are out to pasture for a term - then they can choose to run again. There is no question but the demise of local government, since the changes imposed by the Labour and Fine Gael Government of 2014, has been dreadful for local democracy. Some of us who cared deeply for town councils as the very essence of politics and governance, the absolute instrument where politicians were accountable to their people, will be sure to remember this in the ballot box on May 24. By the way, the ratio of local councillors to people here is at least 50 times higher than in France, Germany or Austria. So there’s one councillor for every 6000 in Cork, and one for every 120 people in France!!

Someone needs to be prosecuted for Torc fires “Wanton destruction” of the National Park - Killarney Solicitor Pat F O’Connor is of course 100 percent right. This is “criminal vandalism” and all local candidates should be asked to give their views on the wildfires occurring on the buffer zone surrounding Killarney National Park and within the park itself. Pat F, a former councillor and chair of the National Park Committee, is correct too in that Europe are quite entitled to bring sanctions against us for neglecting to protect the park. I have no idea why we need sheep grazing next to the walls of the National Park in the first place. They are competing with the highly prized red deer for fodder and driving the stags and hinds down the mountains onto farmland. Sheep graze so closely they destroy the vegetation and the rare butterworth and camomile and thyme on the mountain. And I have no idea why it is the land is burned. Take the so called commonage at the foot of Mangerton which is burnt

year after year. This is the habitat of the meadow pipit and one of the few areas left at all where the cuckoo can be heard now. It is only in the last year or two I have seen sheep being run on this part of the commonage, and they are not local sheep. Take the southernmost end of that commonage - in over 30 years I have never seen sheep run on it. The Scots

Pine of the National Park on Mangerton is singed year after year after year from the wanton burning. And where the owl sits, those branches have long burnt away. That there has been no prosecution is a disgrace and a shame on all of us. Considerable prosecuting powers are enjoyed by both the National Parks and the Gardai. The Department of Heritage, which is in charge of the NPWS, is

well able to come after honest boatmen for rescuing a passenger or two lost in the wilderness of the Killarney National Park with no way home, as we recall from a case that ran for days in Killarney and Tralee courts. Yet not one single person has been hauled before the courts for even a half an hour for annually threatening the whole of the Killarney National Park. I have come to believe this annual conflagration is the expression of a primitive psychosis, a particular psychiatric condition so far undiagnosed. The sap rising in spring and maybe the smell of controlled burning sets them off. So it is not just the court that these people should be hauled in front of, they should also be analysed on the psychiatrist’s couch. Meanwhile, back on the branch, so to speak, what a great irony it is that the much maligned rhododendron actually saved the mountains and the rare native woodlands: it was so dense the fire could not get through and old rhodo acted as a firewall, Assistant Chief Fire Officer John Hegarty told me.

Kerry Stars to host new Special Olympics basketball tournament Kerry Stars Special Olympics and Killarney Lions Club have come together to create a new basketball tournament that will bring together clubs from all over Munster. | By Sean Moriarty The event will take place in the Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre tomorrow (Saturday), from 10am to 4pm, and will feature seven Special Olympics basketball clubs competing for six perpetual shields for the very first time. The Kerry Stars extended its sporting range to include basketball for the first time last year. "When we heard that Kerry Stars were starting basketball as a new sport we wanted to help them in whatever way we could," Ronan Doyle, President Killarney Lions Club, said. "They suggested the idea of hosting a tournament to build links with other Special Olympics basketball teams in Munster, and highlight the skills of the athletes, so we thought it was a great idea to get behind it."

St Paul’s Basketball club will provide timing and scoring equipment while local basketball referee Emer Buckley has encouraged her colleagues from national level to officiate at the event. Staff from the Nike Store in the Killarney Outlet Centre will also be volunteering on the day along with members of Killarney Lions Club. “When the Lions Club approached us last year looking to support an annual event we decided that basketball was our newest sport. We decided then that we would organise this tournament,” Kerry Stars Vice-Chairman Tom Tobin said. Other Special Olympic clubs to participate include Special Olympics Waterford; Limerick City Special Olympics; Lisnagry Special Olympics (Limerick); Mallow United Special Olympics Club; Clonakilty Special Olympic Club and the COPE Foundation Cork.

For weeks Killarney Mountain Meitheal volunteers have been actively bringing the Blue Pool Wood beauty spot back to its former glory, and now members of the Killarney National Park Liaison Committee (KNPLC) are inviting the public to come along and once again enjoy its natural surroundings. In the past few months there had been complaints about the sad state of the Blue Pool and Cloughereen walks as they had become dense with overgrowth, ropes needed to be repaired and braille bollards for the visually impaired section of the walk had to be removed. However, members of KNPLC, who are made up of 21 local groups including community groups, conservationists, jarveys, recreation groups and others working alongside the National Parks and Wildlife Service, say although there’s plenty of more work to be done – locals can now once again come out and enjoy the area. “It’s a hidden gem, few people know about it,” Patricia Hanley, Chair of KNPLC, told the Killarney Advertiser this week. “It’s is underutilised because it had fallen into disrepair.” However, there’s more work to do including erecting new signage and putting up new bollards with braille for the visually impaired, she added. “The 21 groups meet monthly and there’s

a plan for the national park that we’re working on to bring it back to its former glory for the community to enjoy.” Killarney Mountain Meitheal volunteers will be out again clearing more sections of the Blue Pool area this Sunday at 9am and Tuesday at 9.30am. All are welcome to come and give an extra hand. Also, on Tuesday night, Muckross Community Association will hold a public meeting in the community centre at 8pm to hear what the residents have to say about their area. All are invited to attend.

HELPING: Chairperson of Callinafercy Rowing Club John Joe O'Sullivan presented Ross Hurley with a cheque for €2,170, the proceeds of The Club's Biddy Fundraising night, which was held on March 1 last in Killorglin Golf Club. Singers plan to lift the roof at charity event Two choral groups are planning to come together for a special night of song next week and plan to raise plenty of funds for charity. | By Michelle Crean

Getting ready for the County Fleadh in Milltown this June from front: Bernard Cronin, Sheila Hurley (Treasurer), Ciara Kennedy (Secretary), Margaret Wrenn (Vice-Treasurer), John Joe Harmon, John Lehane. Back: Chris Horan (PRO), Turlough O'Brien (Vice-Chairman), Vincent Prendergast (Chairman) and Tim Wrenn.

Milltown is tuning up for County Fleadh this June

Blackwater Singers present ‘A Night of Song’ in the Blackwater Tavern on Thursday, April 11 at 8.30pm. And special guests on the night include Killarney ladies singing group Finding Your Voice. Admission is free but donations will be greatly accepted to raise funds for Crumlin Children’s Hospital and for Tralee boy Noah Switzer Buckley who suffers with Autism, Musical Director for the event Mary Culloty O’Sullivan told the Killarney Advertiser this week. “One of the ladies in the Blackwater group had a child who attended Crumlin Hospital so they chose that as their char-

ity,” Mary said. “The Killarney ladies group picked Noah Switzer Buckley. It’s going to be a great night. There’ll be songs from both groups and at the end both will come together and sing ‘Ireland’s Call’ to raise the roof for the grand finale.” Mary’s husband Paul O’Sullivan will be the sound engineer on the night. And she added that everyone involved is giving their time for free. “Thanks to Mary and Teddy O’Neill, both members of the Blackwater group, who have kindly allowed us to perform in the Blackwater Tavern. Everyone is giving up their own time for this evening and every penny is going to the charities.”

Plans are coming together in Milltown for the Kerry County Fleadh, which will be staged in June for the second year running. From June 19 to 23, the event will feature bands on the Gig Rig, ceilí on the street, family fun day on the June 23, a street music competition with great prizes, funfair and many other music events in the local bars. "Last year's Fleadh was a huge success in Milltown,” Chairman Vincent Prendergast said. "Feedback has been very positive, and there's already a lot of interest in what the 2019 Fleadh has to offer." The line-up for this year's free street entertainment will be revealed over the coming weeks, and will feature the best in traditional music, with internationally renowned trad acts, so watch out for announcements on these shortly. "Milltown is an ideal venue," PRO of the event, Chris Horan, added. "The central location, coupled with world-class facilities in the Nagle-Rice Community Hall and Presentation Secondary School, are both brand new and perfectly suited to accommodating the

large crowds with ease." And it’s great to feature and promote young talent, the famous trad names of tomorrow, from branches across the county, Vice-Chairman Turlough O'Brien added. "This is a great opportunity for the young musicians,” he said. "Playing as support to a big name in front of a big crowd is a memorable experience, builds confidence and shows the fun and appreciation that's at the heart of trad music." Turlough added that the team of 120 local volunteers will help run the event. "The fantastic team of local volunteers reflects the community spirit we have in Milltown, involving people of all ages. The Fleadh could not be held in Milltown without the generous support of local businesses and their continued sponsorship is the reason events like these are a success."

Engineer appointed to fix dangerous Killarney junctions Kerry County Council and Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) have appointed an engineer to produce a road lay out for both the Upper Lissivigeen/Coolcaslagh Road and the Woodlawn/Ballycasheen Road. The news was this week welcomed by Cllr Michael Gleeson who says he’s been calling for safety measures in both areas for many years. “For many years the general public have

endured inordinate delays as they sit in their vehicles seeking to exit on to the N22 national primary road, Killarney to Cork, from the Upper Lissivigeen/Coolcaslagh Road and also from the Woodlawn/Ballycasheen Road,” he said. “I and many other Councillors have frequently placed motions and questions on the agenda for local and Kerry County Council meetings highlighting the dangers involved in trying to exit into the almost constant traffic flow.

“Indeed, the members of the former Killarney Town Council often expressed our concern for the safety of drivers who were forced by frustration and time factors to try and exit the minor roads. At long last there would appear to be the prospect of some progress as Kerry County Council and the TII have appointed an engineer to produce a road lay out for both junctions that will, it is hoped, eliminate the major challenges

being experienced for far too long.” The proposals are expected to be ready for presentation and scrutiny by August/September, he added. “This time frame should allow the important work to be undertaken later in the year at a time when the traffic levels will be a little quieter than in summer time. Let’s all hope that greater safety and more ease of access on to the N22 will result from the proposals that are long overdue.”

Crokes forget their troubles and dance Members of the Dr Crokes GAA Club put the disappointment of their All-Ireland club final defeat to rest - by dancing the night away in the INEC on Friday night. x

| By Sean Moriarty It was a glitzy affair as over 1000 attended the club’s second Dancing with Crokes event, modelled on the very popular Strictly Come Dancing template. And it was the perfect antidote - just 12 days after their All-Ireland final loss. Since January, 10 local couples were put through a rigorous training regime by local dancer David Rae of Celtic Steps fame. The competition was so tight even the judges could not pick a winner and it was eventually decided to jointly award the victory to two couples. Mary McMahon and Eric O’Connor danced a tango, while Eilis Cronin and

Harry O’Neill danced a paso doble to ‘The Final Countdown’. PRO Aoife Cronin was another club member to take part in the event. “We had great craic over the 10 weeks training, we won’t know what to do with our spare time not that it is over,” she said. “David was very good. We opened on the night with all 20 of us dancing to ‘The Greatest Showman’ and it really was that. It was so good, that at the end of the night we all came back out and did it again.” Proceeds from the night will go towards the team’s training fund, and hopefully, another trip to Croke Park next March.

PERSONAL INJURY CLAIMS TO PERSONAL INJURY ASSESSMENT BOARD

All personal injuries claims lodged in Ireland must first be lodged with the Personal Injuries Assessment Board (PIAB). This applies to all personal injury cases save and except medical negligence cases.

In the event of an accident taking place wherein you have sustained an injury by way of a slip or fall, road traffic accident or some other incident arising from which you have sustained injuries which is not your fault, you are entitled to lodge a claim for a personal injuries compensation it is important. It is important to note that it is incumbent upon all claimants to notify the person or persons to whom they are holding responsible as soon as possible following the incident. There is an obligation to notify the person or persons responsible (the Respondents) as quickly as possible but within two months in writing of the incident giving rise to the claim but it is not fatal to the claim if this is not done but most certainly all claims for personal injuries must be lodged and appropriately commenced within two years of the date of the accident in default of which the claim will be statute barred. The Statute of Limitations being the two year period is the time frame within which you must commence your claim. After that time where the claim is statute barred, your claim will fail. It is important that you establish and nominate as respondents all and any persons who may bear responsibility for your injuries and these should be nominated in the application to the PIAB.

Once you lodge your claim with PIAB, PIAB then notifies the respondent and the claim is underway. The application to PIAB is by way of an application form together with a medical report and the appropriate fee. Thereafter the PIAB will write to the Respondent(s) inviting them to agree to the PIAB assessing the matter and subject to their agreement the PIAB will then proceed to assess the claim on the basis of medical evidence and evidence in support of an application for out of pocket expenses to include loss of earnings etc. Once the PIAB make a determination, that determination is reduced to writing and furnished to the applicant and the respondent(s) and each party has a short period of time to accept or reject the determination. If both parties accept the determination, the Payment Order is issued and that concludes matters. However, if the matter is not accepted by both parties, an Authorisation to issue proceedings then issues. Most importantly to note is that in the event that you have sustained an injury and you are seeking compensation, you should ensure to act quickly and prosecute your claim promptly. The above is a discussion piece only and does not purport to be legal advice and should not be relied upon as such. In respect of any specific circumstances, you should consult your solicitor to obtain specific legal advice and Terence F. New digital hub combats rural depopulation A brand new not-for-profit digital hub aimed at generating employment and enterprise in the south Kerry was officially opened on Monday. Sneem Digital Hub, which was opened by Minister Brendan Griffin TD, aims to enhance the economic infrastructure of County Kerry, generating employment and enterprise in the south Kerry area through the provision of office space, hot desking facilities and co-working space. It offers opportunities for start-ups, entrepreneurs and existing businesses as well as the potential for businesses or companies to locate or re-locate to Sneem. “The key aim of this new project is to generate jobs and investment locally to benefit the south Kerry economy and to offer new and existing businesses an excellent quality of life in a vibrant rural setting,” Aidan Murray, Sneem Digital Hub Manager, said. “The Hub offers employers and employees a strong quality of life in a beautiful coastal location which has excellent local services, attractions and facilities for all ages.” He added that Sneem Digital Hub would not exist were it not for the significant

funding and other supports provided by Enterprise Ireland, the Department of Rural and Community Development, Kerry County Council, South Kerry Development Partnership and the local community, for which they are very grateful. Minister Brendan Griffin added that Sneem Digital Hub offers so many opportunities to the people of the area. “It helps to tackle the major challenge of rural depopulation by affording people the possibility of great careers combined with the wonderful lifestyle which Sneem offers. The hub will help to grow the local population in a sustainable way and will provide a real alternative to life in expensive and overcrowded cities. However, it is not just sports people that he treats, he assesses and treats anyone suffering from muscle pain. “I have helped people who are dancers, builders, runners, truck drivers, nurses, hairdressers, footballers, office workers, retired people and students,” Stefan said. “Typical issues that I see in the clinic include ankle problems, leg muscle problems, neck and shoulder pain, and in particular the one that affects many people - lower back pain.” In the clinic he offers assessment and treatment of Soft Tissue Dysfunction and Injury, Sports Massage, Deep Tissue Massage and Cupping Therapy. For sports clubs, Match Day First Aid cover can be provided, as well as Taping and Strapping, and Kinesiology Taping. “I also work with sporting clubs, working

THE POWER OF ADVERTISING “Since moving to Killarney from Wales in 2016, I was always aiming to start up my own independent physiotherapy clinic. Since making the jump in August of 2018, the success of my clinic so far has in no small part been down to the team at the Killarney Advertiser. I was really surprised at the number of enquiries that come through the advertiser. With their advice and support my clinic is going from strength to strength and is worth every penny. Valerie Trant, Noeleen Loughlin and Joanne Ni Churrain say goodbye to Pat O'Donoghue who has now retired.

Eye’ll see you later! Popular optometrist retires after 40 years Popular Killarney eye doctor, Pat O’Donoghue, has put away his eye testing equipment for good - as the third generation optometrist has officially retired - after over 40 years of service. Since he announced the news well-wishes have been paid to Pat, who took over Urban Optics, a family business, in 1973. His family have been in the optometry industry in Kerry for three generations,

tracing back to the 1960s and have been providing a high level of eye care to Killarney and the wider Kerry area ever since. Pat has overseen the expansion of Urban Optics, formerly named ‘Pat O’Donoghue, Optometrist’, including its relocation to Scotts Street in the town centre, where it has remained since 2007. “Pat is rightly considered one of the leading optometrists in the country, through his commitment to consist-

ently up-skilling and introducing the best and newest technologies to Urban Optics,” Sheila O'Sullivan, practice manager, said. “His focus has always been on creating a business that is an integral part of the local community and he has certainly achieved that. “I’m sure I speak for my fellow staff members, as well as the long list of customers that Pat has seen over the decades, when we wish him the best of luck in his retirement.”

Despite a recent change in ownership, all members of staff are staying on at Urban Optics. And new owner Noeleen Loughlin, along with new optometrist Valerie Trant, have been welcomed to the practice by Pat himself. “Noeleen comes to Urban Optics as a hugely experienced optometrist with a similar vision to my own. Having worked with her for the past year, I’m sure the practice is in good hands,” he said. “We’re also very happy to welcome Valerie, and I’m sure, as a Killarney native, she will have no problem settling into the Urban Optics family. “We could not have achieved such success without our wonderful and loyal patients, so I’d like to thank all of them for their support throughout my career in optometry.”

GOODBYE: Staff at Urban Optics, Valerie Trant, Brid O'Callaghan, Joanne Ni Churrain, Siobhan Corridan, Noeleen Loughlin, Adrienne Walsh, Sheila O'Sullivan and Aisling O'Keeffe, say a final farewell to optometrist Pat O'Donoghue who has retired after 40 years service.

GARDEN MAGIC

Gardening - By Debby Looney

Heathers are great for bees and pollinators Azaleas and rhododendrons are inspiring plants – they are pricey and showy, so demand a ‘setting’! There are many companion plants for these beauties, those which enhance them, and those which provide colour when they have finished flowering. For underplanting, that is low growing plants which will keep weeds down, there are several options. Heathers always look great planted with rhodos, and there are varieties available for any time of the year. At the moment, ‘Spring Torch’ has bright orangey-pink new growth, ‘Spring Cream’ has creamy new growth, and ‘Spring Tips’ is a gold heather with fiery new growth. Don’t forget – heathers are great for bees and pollinators! Another low growing plant is Lithodora, a ground cover which will give colour throughout the summer - ‘Heavenly Blue’ is the best variety to try. It is not a long lasting plant for most gardens, some people have great luck with them, others have them for a year or two. Either way, they are good value. Bog rosemary, or Andromeda, is another lovely little plant. It has foliage reminiscent of rosemary, and in spring is covered in pink bells. It is hardy and spreads a good bit. Taller plants which look well amongst the large leaves of rhodos are the delicate looking Japanese Maples. There is a myriad to choose from, from the dark red Acer jerre Schwartz to the bright yellow foliage of A. shirasawanum Golden Moon. There are, broadly speaking, two groups of Japanese maples, A. pal-

matum, which has an upright graceful habit with fine foliage and A. palmatum dissectum which is lower growing, has a slight weeping habit and very finely toothed leaves. Of the two, A. palmatum dissectum would be less hardy, and more prone to frost damage. Camellias are a superb companion plant also, flowering just before the rhodos. They come in a great array of colours these days, ‘Brushfields Lemon’ is a gorgeous yellow double variety and quite unusual. ‘Pink Icicle’ is a bright single pink, and ‘white doves’ is a white beauty, as the name might suggest! Pieris must also not be forgotten – ‘forest flame’ is an oldie but goodie, its new growth is the brightest red of all the pieris. ‘Debutante’ is a very free flowering variety with sprays of clean white flowers. Variegated forms add even more interest such as ‘Silver Flame’. Many ericaceous plants, such as camellias, rhodos and azaleas, like shade. They are naturally woodland plants, often growing on mountain sides. They tolerate shallow soil as long as it is rich in organic matter, retains moisture and is free draining. If you are starting from scratch, I would certainly recommend creating a suitable bed as it will reap rewards for years to come! The main problem we have is the heaviness of our soil and the fact that waterlogging can occur. At this time of year many ericaceous plants can look a little yellow - try a handful of Epsom salts around the base of the plant which will often green them up.

But, when art school sends her packing, Kit is forced to move back home with her parents and take a temp job in a boring office. son, enters Kit's life and offers to give her childlike heart its greatest desire. She receives a mysterious letter from an unnamed salesman who invites her to ‘The Store’, a strange indeterminate place that sells "what you need". The salesman offers her the chance to have it sell her childhood fantasy: a unicorn. Larson's directorial debut, with a script by Samantha McIntyre, is a love letter to everyone's inner child, and a reminder that no dream is impossible. “We’re just so proud he’s here to tell the tale” | By Michelle Crean A Kerry mother has this week thanked medical staff in Crumlin hospital for saving her baby boy’s life. Sara O'Connor from Firies recalled the moment she thought her son would die because of lung cysts, and is this week calling for public support for CMRF Crumlin. Sara said leaving her daughters and husband during her pregnancy was ‘terrifying’, and that Crumlin will always hold a special place in her heart because of the ‘real-life’ heroes that helped her baby Daniel. Daniel’s parents, Sara and her husband Adrian O’Connor, are now calling for public donations online to www.cmrf.org to help some of Ireland’s sickest children. “I was so excited for my gender scan,” Sara said. “I could hardly wait to find out if it was a boy or a girl, but at the next appointment I remember the room go-

ing silent. I knew we were in trouble. My little baby had a condition called Congenital Pulmonary Airway Malformation (CPAM). One of Daniel’s lungs hadn’t developed properly and air-filled cysts had developed in its place.” Sara had to move to Dublin before Daniel was born because they didn’t have the facilities to take care of him in Tralee, and because Sara had such a high risk pregnancy. The couple were told to be prepared for a possible stillbirth. She said that trying to digest that news was awful. “There was no telling if Daniel would be able to breath on his own until he was born. It was terrifying to be on my own.” Happily, Daniel was born kicking and screaming. “Everything was fine until he had his six week check-up back in the Coombe. His x-ray showed that the tumours in his lung were so big that they’d pushed his heart to the right side of his body, under his armpit. They were compressing the main veins to his heart and we had to get him back to Crumlin immediately. It went so well and three weeks after that we were finally on our way home to Kerry with our beautiful, healthy little baby. " She added that Mr Jonathan McGuinness is a superhero in their house. “He truly is one of life’s gentlemen and, without doubt, he saved my son’s life. Prof Paul McNally was so thorough and there for us whenever we needed him. Dr Gavin Kane was also an amazing doctor who took time to answer all my questions, and Gale was a very special staff nurse. She put a smile on our faces through the tears, and for that I will never forget her. I can’t thank the team at Crumlin enough for saving Daniel’s life. They are all real-life heroes. Thank God for Crumlin and the amazing people that work there. They will always hold a special place in our hearts."

Staff raise €40K for Ian's trust fund Staff from The Killarney Park Hotel have raised €40,000 for the Ian O’Connell Trust after participating in the annual Ring of Kerry Cycle. The inspirational Killarney teenager suffered life-changing injures in a freak cycling accident in 2017. Since then he has been promoting a well-being lifestyle through his ‘if you can’t stand up, stand out’ mantra. The owners, management and staff of the hotel said they were determined to do all they could to help out their colleague, Ian O’Connell. “When the Ian O’Connell Trust was added as one of the official charities for the 2018 Ring of Kerry Cycle it was only natural that we dedicated our fundrais-

ing efforts towards this goal,” said Operations Manager, Marcus Treacy, who along with 15 of his colleagues took part in the cycle last July. “As well as raising sponsorship individually, we contacted all of our suppliers and asked if they could donate and we were blown away by the response. We also received many very generous donations from our guests and in total, we raised €40,000, which we hope will help Ian in his rehabilitation. He has truly been an inspiration to all of us here at the hotel.”

Killarney to host Cyber Security Conference | By Sean Moriarty A new conference in cyber security, with a direct focus on relationships between Ireland and the United States, will take place in Killarney next month. The Cyber Security Conference (Transatlantic Policy Forum) will be held at The Brehon, on May 10. The conference is being organised by Dr William Sheehan, a local historian and organiser of the Killarney Economic Conference.

The conference began after a conversation between Dr Edward Burke of the University of Nottingham and Sheehan who are both historians of military conflict. They have invited David Crozier of Queens University Belfast and Dr Robert Mauro of Boston College to join them. All four share a common concern that cybercrime and cyber terrorism is a real threat especially given the number of US multi-national companies based in Ireland. Speakers include Richard Browne, Director of Ireland’s National Cyber Se-

curity Centre; Michael Gubbins, Garda National Cyber Crime Bureau; Detective Inspector Alistair Burns, Serious Cyber Crime Unit PSNI, while the keynote speaker will be Sir Rob Wainwright, Senior Partner for Deloitte’s Cyber Practice and the former Director of Europol, and David Stanton, TD, Minister of State for Equality, Immigration and Integration, will deliver the opening address. “This conference is unique, it brings together key leaders in cybersecurity from Ireland, the UK and the United States, and from sectors such as defence, law enforcement, business and research

for the first time in Ireland,” Dr Sheehan said. “Panels will explore how new partnerships can be created to face future threats both across sectors and countries, how those threats will evolve from state and non-state sectors, and how the Irish government can support this emerging industry in Ireland, and how business can evolve and protect themselves into the future.” For further information or to register your attendance visit www.killarneyeconomicconference.com, phone 064 776 7181 or email info@killarneyeconomicconference.com.

TG4’s ‘Underdogs’ GAA series is back The search is on again to a find a squad of ambitious men with enough drive, skill and passion to take on one of the country’s greatest gaelic football teams.

Lightsabres at the ready in Kerry The festival programme for Fáilte Ireland’s ‘May the 4th Be With You’ festival from May 3 to 5, has been announced. Minister of State for Tourism and Sport, Brendan Griffin, unveiled the programme of events for this year’s ‘May the 4th Be With You’ festival on the Wild Atlantic Way, including a host of fun activities for all-ages across the Kerry villages of Portmagee, Valentia Island and Ballyferriter. Celebrating May the 4th, the day when fans across the globe commemorate the Star Wars Universe, this year’s fes-

tival will include a new geodesic space marquee in Portmagee, where fans can enjoy Yoda Yoga, Lego building competitions and a Star Wars comic book expo. Also new this year, Dingle native and five time World Champion Dancer David Geaney will bring his hit Broadway show, ‘Velocity’, to Ballyferriter alongside a John Williams musical tribute to Princess Leia, performed by the Kerry School of Music orchestra.

“I’m delighted to announce an amazing programme of activity in Kerry for this year’s ‘May the 4th Be With You’ festival,” Brendan Griffin said. “Following the success of the inaugural ‘May the 4th Be With You’ festival in May 2018, Fáilte Ireland has worked with local communities across Portmagee, Valentia Island and Ballyferriter to make this year’s festival bigger and better. The festival is a brilliant opportunity to promote Kerry and the Wild Atlantic Way to a global audience.” Filming for recent Star Wars films took place in locations across Kerry, Cork, Clare and Donegal. Following the success of Fáilte Ireland’s first ‘May the 4th Be With You’ festival in Kerry in May 2018, the festival will also take place in Malin Head, Donegal this year. For the full programme of events visit www.wildatlanticway.com/may-the4th.

Like last year, players will be chosen by a panel of expert selectors who make up the management team. This year there will be a few fresh faces stepping up to the sideline. ‘Underdogs’ launched the careers of a number of All-Ireland champions, not least Kerry powerhouse Kieran Donaghy and Cork’s Pearse O’Neill. Could you be the next star to follow in their footsteps? “We are looking forward to a new series of the ‘Underdogs’ which ties in with our extensive year round GAA coverage,” TG4 Head of Sport Rónán Ó Coisdealbha said. This series has always given the opportunity to club players to showcase their talent on a national stage which may result in them becoming future All-Ireland medallists as previous ‘Underdogs’ have.” This is a chance to be trained and managed by legends of the game, for unknown players to go up against some of the country’s best gaelic footballers.

Trump makes another gaff! This week President Trump was unable to recall where his father was born. He claimed his father was German born when in fact Fred Trump was born in New York City. Trump was speaking at a NATO press conference earlier this week. During the briefing he had a go at the German chancellor, Angela Merkel, and said Germany was not paying its fair share towards NATO’s military alliance. “I have great respect for Angela and I have great respect for the

country,” said Trump. “My father is German, was German, born in a very wonderful place in Germany, so I have a very great feeling for Germany.” This is the third time he has made this gaff on the record. Trump’s grandfather, Friedrich Trump, was born in the German village of Kallstadt. He landed in New York City in 1885 but eventually made his way west, settling in Seattle, and in November 1891 bought a restaurant.

“Keep speed vans away from our graveyards” Speed detection vans are still setting up outside graveyards in Kerry when funerals are taking place - despite a request by councillors that the practice should cease.

COUNTY CLEAN UP: The eighth KWD County Clean Up will take place on Saturday, April 13. Cathaoirleach of South and West Municipal District Cllr Norma Moriarty is leading calls for as many people as possible to get involved. 8,000 bags of litter collected across the county last year

Registration for the annual County Clean-Up day closes Monday April 8 at 5pm. The eighth County Clean Up will take place on Saturday, April 13 and a call has gone out to individuals and communities across the county to get involved in the annual litter collection effort. Last year, some 5,500 volunteers were out and about on the day with the support of Kerry County Council and KWD Recycling as well as local organisations like Kerry GAA, Kerry IFA, and Kerry ICMSA, each of which are joining in the effort again this year. Colm ‘The Gooch’ Cooper will also be lending a hand on the day and is helping to promote the initiative. A record 5,500 volunteers took part in the Kerry County Clean Up in April 2018 which saw 8,000 bags of litter collected, the highest ever tally in the seven years in which the environmental and community initiative has existed. KWD Recycling and Kerry County Council completed an analysis of the litter collected which revealed that single-use drinking containers were the most common item of litter retrieved from locations across the county, followed by sweet and chocolate

wrappers. “We are aiming to having the biggest ever number of participants this year and whether you are part of a community group, a Tidy Towns committee, a sports club or a school group, or if you’re just a civic-minded citizen, you can roll up your sleeves and get involved,” said the Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr Norma Foley. “The growing success of the County Clean Up since it was established in 2012, is evident in the huge voluntary effort all over Kerry in previous years and the volume of litter retrieved over the years is indicative of the larger numbers taking part. So let’s again get the county looking spick and span and appreciate the clean and healthy environment which we should never take for granted.” KWD Recycling will again provide cleanup packs to groups which register at www.countycleanup.com and collection points will be designated around the county to ensure that all litter gathered is disposed of.

Fianna Fail Councillor John Francis Flynn, who raised the issue at a meeting of the South & West Municipal District on Friday, said Gardai and the Council are blaming each other about it - but meanwhile, it is still happening. Councillor Flynn had previously raised the matter of GoSafe vans outside graveyards when funerals were taking place at a meeting of Kerry County Council. "The Council is blaming the Gardai and the Gardai are blaming the Council but the speed vans are still outside the graveyard," Cllr Flynn said. He said he was aware of this happening at Kilnanare Graveyard, on the R561 between Firies and Castlemaine, and at Ballyheigue in North Kerry. The Council had written to An Garda Siochana, at the request of Councillors, informing them about the issue and requesting that the GoSafe vans locate elsewhere.

An email sent to Kerry County Council in response on February 26, from Inspector Anthony Sugrue stated: "I have requested that new locations be identified and risk accessed to check suitability, regarding Castlemaine." Councillor Flynn said he'd received complaints and had witnessed it for himself and on one occasion the GoSafe van was blocking the cemetery gates, he said. "It's desperate disrespectful that the speed vans would be outside a graveyard with people trying to get in to the graves of their loved ones," he said. "People are afraid if they park behind it they'll get a parking ticket and they're being prevented from visiting the graveyard because of total ignorance," he added. Councillor Flynn noted the graveyards are Council-owned property and byelaws should be introduced if necessary. He had previously been informed by the Council that An Garda Siochana determine the locations of the vans. "If a speed van pulled up outside my driveway, I'd be perfectly entitled to move it on - so I don't see why they can't do the same," he said.

Hollywood actress has released a new book Hollywood actress Bridget Moynahan has released a new book that gets 40 powerful women to open up about their favourite pair of shoes. Moynahan is best known for her role in the police drama ‘Blue Moon’. She made her Hollywood debut in ‘Coyote Ugly’ in 2000 and has also appeared in ‘The Sum of All Fears’ as well as other blockbusters. Her paternal grandmother is from Inch. Mobile farm rolls into the Gaelscoil

Deep relaxation and its importance Life is so busy these days that it’s never been so important to treat the mind and body. Time for yourself once a month is very important. If you feel good - you make everyone around you feel good also. A treatment such as a full body hot stone massage has the ability to ease away those aches and pains and also balance the mind. The heat and pressure of the stones helps to take your mind off your thoughts, and by listening to the relaxing music you can switch off from the outside world. A relaxing Swedish full body massage

is also amazing for relaxation. For those that are not too sure about it, we would recommend an Indian head massage. It includes the head, face, neck and shoulders and is really good at increasing your circulation and in turn releases negative energy trapped in the body, replacing it with positive energy and a feeling of well-being.

A mobile farm operated by Maperath Farm in Kells, Co Meath paid a visit to the Gaelscoil Killarney last Friday to teach all the boys and girls about farming. The farm was accompanied by trained farmer, Eoin Sharkey, who educated the children about the different farm animals on Irish farms and their role in producing quality food that is safe and affordable for consumers. “We thought it was important for children to interact with farm animals and learn where their food comes from as many people have no connection to farms and may not make the link,” Mary Carroll, Chairperson of the Gaelscoil’s Parents

Council who organised the visit, said. “Eoin was very informative and everyone learnt something new.” Mary added that the mobile farm is a unique outdoor classroom. “With calves, sheep, goats, geese and pigs amongst the animals, all the children were delighted with the hands on experience. Each class visited the farm during the day and had a chance to interact with the animals and learn more about farming.”

Call Jill on 064 6632966 for more information or to book an appointment.

Puttanya Ryan, Zoe McGrath, Charlie Lockett and Seoidín Scully O’Sullivan, from Third Class in Gaelscoil Killarney enjoyed a visit from a mobile farm last Friday.

Hybrid cars sales on the increase Bowlers Toyota Garage in Killarney has witnessed a sharp increase in the sales of Hybrid cars. Bowlers Toyota dealership said 70 percent of all new cars they sold this year have been Hybrid. Hybrid cars combine a conventional petrol or diesel engine with an electric-motor. The electric motor assists the engine so that the car consumes less fuel and emits less emissions. Hybrid cars can save you costs on fuel and even recharge their batteries without being plugged in. Toyota’s CHR is the best-selling Hybrid car in the country, according to Michael O’Keeffe pictured below of Bowler’s Garage. New EU emission regulations on the horizon mean people are thinking

differently about how they buy cars. There are also favourable finance packages available to buyers of Hybrid and electric cars. “With EU emissions regulations only around the corner isn’t it better to plan ahead now?” he said. “More and more households are budgeting their monthly expenditure, this has resulted in a shift in Irish car drivers to tailor made car loan packages. Did you know we have our own Toyota Bank offering flexible repayment options. We offer same day approval with finance on both used and new cars.”

Good turnout expected for annual vintage classic car and tractor road run Up to 80 cars and tractors are expected for this Sunday’s annual charity run organised by Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club (KVCVC). The road run is based at the Faha Court Hotel but as ever the individual routes for both the cars and tractors remains a tight-lipped secret until registration is complete on Sunday morning.

“We are hopeful of a very good turn out,” club member Katie Cameron said. “We never know until the day how many will turn up. We are already expecting 40 cars and 40 tractors. It is a great day out and a lot to see on the day.” Sunday’s event is the club’s first ahead of a busy season. Members are already planning the annual car show at Killarney Racecourse which is scheduled for July 21 - pictured below.

Hyundai Tucson most popular car in Kerry For the second month in succession Ford is the most popular make in Kerry. New figures revealed by the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) show that there were 223 Blue Oval-badged cars sold in the county last month. Three different Ford models made it into the top 10 for March, the Kuga 62, Focus 60, and Fiesta 46. A total of 1,353 new cars were sold in Kerry last month, compared to 1,606 a year ago. However, the biggest selling individual model was Hyundai’s Tucson with 75 models of the Korean people carrier sold in Kerry last month. Hyundai had the fifth highest selling car with its Kona finishing behind the Kuga, Focus and Nissan’s Qashqai. However, if cars sales were a barometer of the national economy, things are not good. There was a 15 percent drop in car sales in the county compared to the same period last year. That is a total of 253 less new cars sold in Kerry year-on-year. Nationally, new car registrations year to date are down 10.7 percent (64,098) on

the same period last year (71,760). The new Commercial Vehicle sector shows a similar nationwide picture, with new van registrations down 2.2 percent (3,067) on March 2018 (3,137), and year to date are down 10.7 percent (11,182) and truck sales saw a slight decline of 1.5 percent (267) in comparison to March 2018 (271) and year to date down 3.3 percent (886). Imported Used Cars on the other hand increased in the entire country by 9.98 percent (8,970) on March 2018 (8,156) and year to date are 2.74 percent (26,832) ahead of 2018 (26,117). New electric vehicle registrations continue to grow with a total of 1,437 EV cars registered in Ireland so far this year, this has surpassed the total number of EVs registered for the whole of 2018 (1,233). There was 24 pure-electric cars sold in Kerry last month, an increase of 17 in the corresponding period last year. Diesel-engine cars remained the most popular in the county with 719 oil-burners hitting the road last month.

New Head Chef enjoys a culinary challenge What does a Head Chef do during his first week at the renowned five star Aghadoe Heights Hotel and Spa - host a sell-out dinner feeding over 100 of the town’s local residents.

A booklet explaining how Irish politics works written by the fifth and sixth class pupils at Scoil Bhríde Loreto in Killarney has gone on sale as part of their Junior Entrepreneur Project.

Junior Entrepreneur Community Champions complete new project

A booklet explaining how Irish politics works written by the fifth and sixth class pupils at Scoil Bhríde Loreto in Killarney has gone on sale as part of their Junior Entrepreneur Project. This year they have compiled a booklet entitled ‘Who Runs the Country?’ to provide people with a simple explanation of the most important people involved in governing the State, including their role and what it involves as well as the institutions they are part of. It explains the role of the Government, the Taoiseach, the Ministers, the President, County Councillors and many more. The children became interested in compiling such a booklet around the time of the Presidential election last October as many of them were wondering what the actual job of the President is and how much power he has. Having carried out some research, they realised that there are many misconceptions surrounding the Presidency in Ireland as well as the

other offices mentioned above. As part of their research, the class invited current office holders to visit the school and to provide information about their role. They received a visit from Minister Brendan Griffin, during which he gave a detailed talk on his jobs as Minister and TD and they also received useful information from Seán Kelly MEP and Cllr John Joe Culloty. “This booklet would be very useful for both primary and secondary school students as well as anyone who has an interest in the running of the State,” teacher Edward Looney said. The booklet costs €5 and can be purchased by contacting the school 064 6632484 or by emailing the school at sbloretonskillarney@eircom.net.

Recently appointed Head Chef, David Lee, joined the well-known team at Aghadoe Heights just in time to launch the second in a series of three dining experiences, known as ‘The Taste of Aghadoe’. A full house, of predominantly local guests, came together at the start of the month to enjoy a mouth-watering elegant dining experience at an equally attractive price point. The three themed evenings were added to the dining calendar in order to encourage local guests to experience the wonderful array of dishes on offer at the 2AA Rosette Lake Room restaurant. “Sometimes there is a misconception that hotel restaurants are for hotel guests,” David said. “We want the whole town of Killarney, and surrounding areas, to know that we are open for business and that our Lake Room restaurant and Heights Lounge and Piano Bar are wonderful dining options for any night of the week.” Interestingly enough, David took a U-turn on his planned career path after discovering that his Biochemistry course was not ticking all the boxes when it came to job satisfaction. While working part-time in a city centre restaurant, David was instantly enamoured by the addictive energy and charismatic buzz of the kitchen. This, coupled with warm childhood memories of his nan’s incredible cooking and homemade stews, was the beginning of David’s career as a chef. David enrolled at Leith’s School of Food and Wine in London, possibly the most prestigious and respected cookery school in the United Kingdom, which boasts an impressive alumni of well-known celebrity and TV chefs, including Matt Tebbutt, Lorraine Pascale and Gizzi Erskine. While living in London, David spent his time working in the sophisticated and edgy neighbourhood of Knightsbridge, where he refined his skills in classical

French bourgeois cooking and then onto Soho, under Chef Director Ben Tish in Ember Yard, where he gained invaluable experience in the concept of live fire cooking. David moved on to Chess Club, a distinguished private members’ club in Mayfair where he worked under Executive Chef, Jackson Boxer, and spent his time fulfilling the culinary desires of some the world’s best-known faces. Bringing his talents back to Ireland, David joined the team at Dunraven Arms in Limerick, working closely with the Murphy family. The establishment is renowned for their outstanding food quality and was featured in the very first Michelin Guide of the United Kingdom and Ireland in 1911. They were since honoured in 2011 with a commemorative special edition. But it’s not all about cooking. When away from the heat and intensity of running a five star kitchen, David enjoys fishing and running and is an avid fan of music. Given that his family are such an important part of his life, David was delighted to further his career in Ireland and be living close to home. Although having grown up in Cork, David admits that he is excited about living in neighbouring Kerry. He has fond memories of times away with loved ones in Killarney and this made his decision to relocate to The Kingdom “a no brainer”. Apart from the stunning scenery, David sees Killarney as a hugely significant hub for hospitality and has big plans for the culinary scene at the much loved Aghadoe Heights Hotel and Spa. “We are absolutely thrilled to have David leading our fantastic team of chefs and we look forward to seeing what plans he has for the dining experience at Aghadoe Heights,” General Manager, Niall Coffey, said.

David Lee, Head Chef at the Aghadoe Heights Hotel and Spa, with Niall Coffey (General Manager).

You gave us all you had to give, Gifts both great and small, But most of all you gave us love, God’s greatest gift of all, The years have passed since, Those sad days, When the ones we loved were called away, God loved them too and thought it best, To take them home with him to rest. In memory of our good friend Kieran O’Sullivan, Late of Killarney. We shall not stand at your grave and weep, You are not there, you do not sleep; You are the thousand winds that blow, You are the diamond glints on snow, You are the sunlight on ripened grain, You are the soft Autumnal rain. When we awaken in the morning hush, You are the warm uplifting rush, Of soaring birds in circled flight, You are the stars that shine at night, So we do not stand at your grave and cry, You are not there you did not die. Deeply missed by your friends Mike McSweeney, Connie Murphy, Denis O’Leary, John G. O’Leary, John O’Connor, David Sheehan, Pa Sugrue, Tony Sugrue.

In loving memory of Thomas O’Brien, Late of 10 Maple Drive, Killarney. Who’s Birthday we remember on the 10th of April. No words we write can ever say, How much we miss you everyday, No one knows the grief we bear, When the family gather and your not there. We laugh, we talk, we play the part, But beyond the sorrow is a broken heart, The sorrow we feel we can never explain, And the ache in our hearts will always remain. Deep are the memories, Precious they stay, No passing of time, Can take them away, They bring a smile, Sometimes a tear, But always a wish, That you were still here. Sadly missed and always remembered your loving wife Christina. xx Today’s just one of the many days that will always make us sad, For we know it’s too late to say the things we wish we had, We wish we told you far more often that we cared, And that we were grateful for all the happy times we shared. And time’s passed since the day you left, but still we’re asking why, You couldn’t have stayed for longer, And we had to say goodbye, And now your birthday is here all there’s left to do, Is hope that Heaven lets you know how much we are missing you. Always remembered by your loving sons Pa, Jim, Robin and Mike. How very much you’re missed, Is something you will never know, You left behind the broken hearts, Of those who loved you so. A sea of tears and endless grief, Would simply ebb away, If only you could celebrate, Your special day today. Kerry KO’d by manic Mayo | By Adam Moynihan

DIVISION 1: FINAL _________________________________________________

Kerry

2-10 | Mayo 3-11

CROKE PARK

Sunday signified an end of one of Gaelic football’s most infamous eras: the era of Mayo losing big finals in Croke Park. Of course, it’s the unwanted run of unsuccessful All-Ireland finals that Mayo are really desperate to break, but a first National League title in 18 years will do nicely for now. And they were more than good value for their victory over Kerry the last day. The intensity, pace and physicality of Mayo’s performance, especially in that second half, was nothing short of manic. From the full back line out, James Horan’s charges harried aggressively, turned over frequently and broke forward speedily and in great numbers. Kerry simply could not cope. You couldn’t fault Peter Keane’s young team for their efforts throughout the league and the results that they achieved, but this was a truly sobering experience. Mayo were dominant in a general sense but their superiority was most evident around the middle third, or rather from the middle third. Swashbuckling Breaffy clubmates Aidan O’Shea and Matthew Ruane secured primary possession and burst forward with alarming regularity and Na Gaeil pairing Jack Barry and Diarmuid O’Connor were left chasing shadows.

Ruane got in to score Mayo’s first goal and O’Shea was superb again, not just with his work rate and ball-winning capabilities but also with his longrange passing, which threatened to open up the Kerry defence time and time again. Kerry will be counting on David Moran to come in and provide some much-needed experience in this crucial area of the field and it will be interesting to see if Peter Keane tries out some alternative partners between now and the Super 8s. Could the returning Gavin White or tall half forward Gavin O’Brien be viable options? I think they’re worth a shot, although considering the standard of the opposition in Munster at present, Keane is unlikely to get the opportunity to test anyone out against Division 1 opposition for another 14 weeks, and by then it will be too late for experiments. Another pertinent question for Kerry to tackle is how exactly do you handle Mayo’s half back line? Paddy Durcan, Lee Keegan and Donal Vaughan must be an absolute nightmare to go up against. Kerry couldn’t have named a more hard-working half forward line

SPORT

but even Moynihan, O’Shea and O’Brien struggled to stick with their respective markers. They’re all annoying in their own right but Vaughan in particular is just infuriating. He can’t really pass and he can’t really shoot; to call his style unorthodox would be kind. Yet he’s somehow an important cog in one of the best-oiled machines in intercounty football. In a way, he’s the epitome of everything purists hate about the modern game: all athleticism and very little skill. When you think about it, players like Vaughan have a doubly negative effect on a match. First of all, watching him isn’t enjoyable. And secondly, and more importantly, he drags skilful players, like Dara Moynihan for example, so far out of position that they don’t get to showcase their talents in the right areas of the pitch.

But look, it’s effective and it’s up to Kerry to find a way to counteract it. Many observers say that Mayo are lacking a scoring forward but they get into such good positions so close to goal, anyone is capable of scoring – if they make the right decisions. To me, that’s still Mayo’s greatest weakness. They create so many overloads and scoring opportunities but far too often they take the wrong option. They pass instead of shooting, or fist a score instead of going for goal. If they could get that part right there would be no stopping them, but I suppose it’s easier said than done. The biggest concern for Kerry is the gap between now and the Super 8s. They were caught on the hop last year by Galway. Peter Keane and his management team will need to find a way of making sure that it doesn’t happen again.

This team might need another year There is no disputing the fact that Mayo deserved to win this title as their mature side proved too much for a very inexperienced Kerry team, which is very reliant on the successful minors coming through and making that big step-up to the senior ranks. | By Eamonn Fitzgerald ::: Croke Park Kerry started well enough and jumped into the lead when the strong running Gavin Crowley ran forward from his halfback position to pick up a pass and drill a low shot to the net past Robbie Hennelly in the Mayo goal. Mayo had several goal chances themselves but they opted instead to punch the ball over the bar when they might well have tested Shane Ryan. A Mayo point left them trailing by two points but up popped Stephen O’Brien, who cut a lane through the middle and shot powerfully past Hennelly. Kerry did have some other scoring opportunities but they fell short or went wide. An effort by Kevin McCarthy also hit the post. They still led at half-time, 2-3 to 0-5. Aidan O Shea came into his own at midfield where he proved too strong physically for Jack Barry. Mayo had a great period early in that second half when they reeled off a succession of well-taken points. Stephen O’Brien ran at the Mayo defence and drew fouls, which were converted by the accurate Seán O’Shea. Kerry led by four points but the signs were ominous when Mayo midfielder Matthew Ruane went past Barry and planted Mayo’s first goal. Remember it was Ruane who also scored that match-winning goal for when they defeated Kerry in Tralee. Kerry did respond as Seán O’Shea added a point from a free but it was only a matter of time before Mayo went ahead. Mayo‘s second goal from Mayo captain Diarmuid O’Connor, who outjumped Shane Ryan and fisted the ball in to an empty Kerry net. The goal was well taken but it must count as an error by Shane Ryan who had advanced from his goal line. It was the only error he made as he saved several other attempts by the marauding Mayo forwards. Much was expected of David Clifford on his return after a long lay off through injury but Mayo had done their homework and he was well bottled up. He did man-

age two points from play and almost got that goal for Kerry in the dying moments of the game. He showed some lovely touches when he did manage to break free and he will be a huge asset in the championship.

SUBS

Kerry had to ring the changes when both Kevin McCarthy and Dara Moynihan were injured. That made room for James O’Donoghue, who tried very hard but his efforts to solo past the tight Mayo defence reaped few rewards and he failed to register a score. Sub Paul Geaney added a lovely point late one to cut the Mayo lead to two points. Mayo finished the stronger and fully deserved their win. They have been waiting a long time to break that losing sequence in finals at Croke Park so this was a well-deserved victory. What about Kerry? They will now set out their panel for the championship, which is two months away. They have given game time to 35 players during the league campaign and did very well winning all their games, except the two losses to Mayo. The defence is a matter of concern. They have tried out plenty of players but still seem to be under pressure when the opposition runs at them. Midfield is also a worry. I presume that David Moran will come in there, but he has been out with injury for a long time. Apparently it will be a few more weeks before he returns to the fold. The Kerry forwards are good, but they need to get the ball in quickly to convert their efforts to scores on the board. It is expecting a lot of this experimental Kerry team to develop in just one season. They are good enough to win in Munster, but it may take another year for them to take on the big teams on the national stage. Best of luck to Pobalscoil Sliabh Luachra in the All-Ireland B Colleges final in Croke Park tomorrow.

Rivals clash as month for clubs gets up and running SENIOR CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP (GROUP 2)

_________________________________________________________________________

Killarney Legion v Dr Crokes Sunday at 3.15pm Fitzgerald Stadium

| By Adam Moynihan

Senior championship season is upon us and you couldn’t ask for a better opening weekend fixture than two great rivals, the Legion and the Crokes, going head-to-head in the Fitzgerald Stadium. The latest instalment of Killarney’s fiercest sporting rivalry is sure to be as tetchy as ever, but Crokes’ imposing record in recent years has perhaps taken the shine off a derby that has traditionally been one of the most exciting in Kerry. The Black and Amber put paid to Legion’s 2018 Kerry SFC aspirations by beating them by 14 points in the quarters and you

have to go back five years to find the Derreen club’s last victory over Crokes in the championship. Legion knocked their old adversaries out of the 2014 County Championship but Crokes had the last laugh when they triumphed in an all-Killarney Club Championship final in October of the same year. Legion reached the county final in 2015

but Crokes have dominated much of Kerry club football since. That’s all in the past now, however, and Legion will be keen to start afresh under their new manager, former Kerry senior footballer Stephen Stack. This will be Stack’s first foray into championship action as Legion boss and while he could scarcely have asked for a tougher first assignment, he will take heart from his side’s recent victory over Dingle in the County League when they racked up an impressive tally of 3-11 in difficult conditions. That opening day win was quickly followed by defeat to Spa but Legion were in a commanding position in that game too before losing players to cards either side of half-time. The Crokes are also under new management following the resignation

two weeks ago of former manager Pat O’Shea. Edmund O’Sullivan, who was a selector under O’Shea, has filled the vacant position for Crokes’ first two County League games and it is presumed that he will continue in the role for the rest of the season, although at time of going to print the club had yet to make an official statement on the matter. For last weekend’s defeat to Rathmore, O’Sullivan and existing selectors Botty O’Callaghan, Vince Casey and Der Brosnan were joined on the sideline by recent senior players Luke Quinn and Jamie Doolan. It was an unfamiliar Crokes line-up for that match in Rathbeg as Fionn Fitzgerald, Shane Doolan, Daithí Casey, Tony Brosnan and Kieran O’Leary were all rested after a long year of football. They were also without Kerry players Shane Murphy, Gavin White and Micheál Burns, who were available for selection but kept in reserve in accordance with an interesting agreement with Rathmore. Paul Murphy and Shane Ryan would have been available to Rathmore had the game gone ahead as scheduled the week before the All-Ireland Club final but Rathmore agreed to put that match off

- as long as Crokes agreed to leave their county players out of the rearranged fixture. All of those regulars are expected to return for Sunday’s clash with Legion and as defending champions the Crokes are surely the team to beat again in 2019.

MOYNIHAN ON SONG

The Legion-Crokes clash will be Part II of Sunday’s double-header, with Liam Hassett’s Rathmore facing Kerins O’Rahilly’s in the first game at 1.30pm. Rathmore looked pretty good in their 4-10 to 2-13 victory over the Crokes and they will be hoping for more of the same from their lively forwards, especially John Moynihan who was once again in devastating form. The skilful corner forward always seems to pose Crokes problems and unless my eyes deceived me, he produced another remarkable bit of skill on Saturday when the game was in the melting pot. I would like to see the video to confirm what I thought I saw because the lads I was at the game with weren’t sure if they had seen the same thing, but here’s my account anyway. There didn’t appear to be much on when a bouncing pass was played into Moynihan (about 20 metres out, towards the sideline) as the Rathmore man was being closely guarded, but he cleverly flicked the ball over his and his marker’s head before spinning and collecting possession on the other side. He proceeded to bear down on goal and he showed great composure to sit the keeper down before coolly applying the finish. It’s only the start of April but you’re unlikely to see a better goal all year. When Moynihan is on form, Rathmore are always liable to find the net. Key players George O’Keeffe and Mark Reen were second half substitutes and you would expect both to feature against Rahilly’s, while Kerry keeper Shane Ryan will also return to the fold. Elsewhere, Kilcummin play their first match at senior level since 2017 when they take on Kenmare Shamrocks in Lewis Road on Saturday. The All-Ireland Intermediate champions have made a promising start to the 2019 campaign by defeating Austin Stacks and Templenoe in the County League and they will naturally be hoping to take that good form into the championship. However, Willie Maher is sweating on the fitness of some key players heading into this month for clubs. Kevin McCarthy dislocated his shoulder in Kerry’s game against Roscommon and although he was deemed fit enough to start against Mayo, he went off injured again in that one. Kieran Murphy and Shane McSweeney are also doubts having picked up injuries last time out against Templenoe. The availability of these important players is likely to be a major factor on Saturday. In the other game in Group 1, Dingle play Austin Stacks in Annascaul. That game throws-in at 2.30pm on Sunday.

Glenflesk and Spa dreaming of senior | By Adam Moynihan Four of the eight senior clubs in this county already hail from East Kerry and as the 2019 Intermediate Championship gets up and running, a couple more are vying to make it five for 2020. Last year’s beaten finalists Glenflesk are very much in the hunt for a spot in the semi-finals after a nerve-wracking 1-14 to 1-12 victory over Beaufort in Spa last weekend. Driven on by talismanic midfielder Ronan Murphy, Beaufort forced their way into promising positions on numerous occasions down the stretch but the match slipped away from them, in part due to some errant shooting on the part of their forwards. It was a dogged display by Glenflesk as backs Shane Courtney and James McCarrick, midfielder Dan O’Brien, and hard-working forwards Paudie Healy and Mike O’Shea in particular caught the eye. With Darragh Roche and his brother/ doppelgänger Ian looking sharp in the full forward line, Glenflesk managed to keep the scoreboard ticking over, even without the services of key players Jeff O’Donoghue (togged out but injured) and Lee O’Donoghue (abroad). It was the perfect start in the championship for new manager Paud O’Donoghue and they will go into this Sunday’s clash with Castleisland Desmonds full of confidence. In Group 2, Spa will be hoping to start their Intermediate charge off right when they face pre-tournament favourites Templenoe in Kenmare, but they might have to do it without dynamic half forward Dara Moynihan who was injured in Kerry’s league final defeat to Mayo on Sunday.

Moynihan had reportedly been carrying something in recent weeks and was withheld by Peter Keane for Spa’s opening County League game against An Ghaeltacht due to concerns about fatigue. It now appears as though Ivor Flynn and his management team will have to make do without their influential county man

for the start of the championship at least. Spa will certainly take heart from their recent comeback victory over bitter rivals Legion but Templenoe have fared well in this fixture in the past, most notably in last year’s Intermediate when they halted the Killarney club's progress at the group stage.

Killarney RFC boys are champions of Munster U16 MUNSTER DEVELOPMENT CUP ___________________________________________________________________

IRISH INDEPENDENT PARK

The Killarney RFC U16s made a little bit of history at Musgrave/ Irish Independent Park last weekend when they captured the Munster Development Cup following a hard-fought win over Cashel/Kilfeacle. Kilfeacle started the game with great purpose and control and dominated territory and possession. At first the Tipperary side battered the gainline with powerful forward surges and then gradually they began to move ball wider. The Killarney defence was resolute and unyielding but also, worryingly, running up a considerable penalty count. It looked like Kilfeacle were sure to score on 10 minutes but Liam Randles’ last ditch interception on the five yard line saved a certain seven points. Thankfully, the Killarney lineout was functioning superbly with John McCarthy dominating

and Brendy O’Donoghue bolstering the front row, scrums were solid. Killarney looked to be in deep trouble after 15 minutes, however, when Rob Nealon was binned for continual team infringements. The lads dug in deep and responded to adversity by keeping ball in hand and the breakout duly arrived when Dan Twomey found space and set the platform for the backline to spin ball wide. Skilful passing gave right winger Tomás Clifford a window on the outside and as per usual he took off and outpaced the defence to open the scoring. Kilfeacle’s response was to re-launch

their offensive assault. They pounded away, recycling cleverly, until their powerful lock Dylan O’Grady found a chink and burrowed over. Stephen Ferncombe converted to secure a 7-5 lead. The game opened up somewhat before halftime and both reams probed with ball in hand. Unfortunately Killarney were again reduced to 14 with James Kennelly this time exiting for a mistimed tackle. The large support gave both teams a rousing round of applause at half-time with the score 7-5 to Kilfeacle. As expected, with the nerves settled, the accuracy and tempo increased immediately on the restart. Killarney now began to dominate possession and territory. Suddenly, the half backs’ clearances and box kicks were being chased superbly, pinning Kilfeacle in their own half. Props Adam Cronin and Rob Nealon powered into the game while Cormac Rowe began to make hard yards, and with Pádraic Talbot rotating to centre, the backline moved menacingly. Now Killarney were forcing errors and winning penalties. Several short penalty

options were tried but met with stiff defence. With 15 minutes to go, Killarney out half Donnchadh Grealy elected to go for goal and coolly slotted the penalty to regain the lead 8 points to 7. Fearing defeat, Kilfeacle redoubled their efforts and set siege to the Killarney line. Again the pattern of heroic Killarney scrambling defence emerged. Incredibly, Killarney went down to 14 for a third time when Cormac Rowe was sent to the bin for illegal ruck entry. Kilfeacle again came close but brave smother tackling from the backline kept the tryline intact. Another kickable penalty offense resulted in out half Ferncombe settling for three to take the lead with five minutes to go. As expected, Killarney launched one final assault. Donnchadh Grealy broke the defensive line and surged into the 22. The ball was recycled and shipped wide to the left and powerhouse Ozdenis Koyun got over the tryline before supporting Bailey O’Sullivan touched down. Without a TMO, the tension was unbearable, but after consultation with the linesman the

try was confirmed. With two minutes on the clock, the experience garnered over a long, rollercoaster season was evident in the close-out. Brendy O’Donoghue secured the restart and the ball was retained and recycled until Liam Randles booted it into the stand to signal great scenes of celebration. Killarney captain Peter Walsh accepted the cup and graciously commended a strong, committed and powerful Cashel/Kilfeacle side on their performance. This cup victory provides a huge boost for rugby in southwest Munster and for KRFC, the future sure looks bright. The team certainly rose to the occasion on final day. Liam Randles gave a Man of the Match performance, passing superbly, box-kicking and tormenting opposition throughout. Ozdenis Koyun and Donnchadh Grealy worked in tandem tackling, counter-rucking, turning over possession but also launching the attack. James Kenneally returned from Berlin and slotted into the centre effortless-

ly. Wingers Tomás Clifford and Dan Twomey injected speed, resolve and defensive steel. Full back Mikey Moriarty superbly marshalled the backfield and tackled tigerishly. Prop Adam Cronin gave his most complete performance in a Killarney jersey. Rob Nealon stood resolutely as first up tackler throughout. Darren Cronin worked bravely winning turnover ball and Cormac Rowe carried superbly. Killarney thrower Brendy O’Donoghue and jumper John McCarthy ran a perfect lineout exhibition and the ever-valiant Pádraic Talbot incredibly plugged all the gaps left by the three yellow cards. Bailey O’Sullivan also turned in a superb 60 minute performance, heroically popping up at the end to secure victory. Replacements Jack Kenneally, Shane McAllister and Mike Moriarty provided the necessary backup. Well done to all the lads on their sustained season’s effort and congratulations on securing a first victory for the club in this prestigious competition.

Lakers suffer cup defeat to Carlow The Scotts Lakers’ 2018/19 season came to an end on Sunday afternoon and with one foreign player already off the books, the club’s attention will now turn to re-building the squad for the next charge at promotion to the Super League. The Lakers had qualified for the League Cup quarter-final by virtue of Saturday’s blowout 115-63 win over LYIT but unfortunately they were unable to get the better of a strong Carlow side in the last eight on Sunday. The hosts led by four at the half-time interval but Carlow rallied in the third and led by a single point heading into the fourth. The Lakers were left short-handed by an injury to Séamus Brosnan at the end of the first half and the visitors took full advantage down the stretch, eventually running out 86-96 winners. Carlow now go on to contest the semi-final against Ballincollig on April 13. In the shock of the round, Tolka Rovers, who finished fourth in the Northern Conference, beat league winners DBS Éanna 68-63 away from home. They will play the Dublin Lions in the last four. You would have to question the sense in holding this tournament at the end of the year after the two main competitions have been completed. From speaking to the players it’s clear that the League Cup isn’t held in the same regard as the National Cup and National League, so it must have been very hard for them to stay motivated once their primary goals of winning the cup and getting promoted weren’t achieved. Surely it would make more sense to switch the National Cup, which concludes in January, with the League Cup, or else play the League Cup out during

the year and finish the season off with the league playoffs?

SOLID YEAR

The Lakers reached the league semi-final and all in all it was another solid year for the club, although their momentum rather petered out towards the end as they strained to keep the pace with a depleted squad. Recruiting Seán O’Brien last summer at the last minute proved to be a masterstroke. The American is without question the highest calibre signing the club has made since returning to National League basketball, but whether or not he decides to stay on for another year is another matter. While the Philly native has spoken of his fondness for Killarney, you can be sure that many top teams will be vying for his signature over the summer months. Meanwhile, the club’s other summer signing, Big Dutch forward Papito Hersisia, has officially left the club. In fact, he had already left town before last weekend’s double-header, posting to Instagram that he was returning to the Netherlands with his partner. Hersisia undoubtedly had the size and potential to be a major force for the Lakers and they got some big performances from him over the course of the season, but I think it’s fair to say that he wasn’t quite as impactful as the club would have hoped. Club officials will be working diligently in the coming weeks and months as they try to unearth a top quality big to complement Andy Fitzgerald, and if O’Brien leaves they will also be on the look-out for a guard. Either way it’s sure to be a busy off-season for the club as they try to build a squad capable of bringing Super League basketball back to Killarney.

to the angling competition calendar and the banter was lively at the weigh-in. Our top five anglers on the day were as follows: 1st Mick Linehan, 2nd Diarmuid Linehan, 3rd Tim O Connor, 4th Oliver Long, 5th Anthony Griffin. Heaviest Trout went to the rod of Mick Linehan. The first allocation of points towards Angler of the Year are now notched up and hopefully the good turn out will be reflected again at our next outing which is our club fundraiser for supporting anglers competing for the club in interprovincial and National competitions. This competition is taking place on Lough Lein on the May Bank Holiday Sunday, May 6 and we fish for the honour of lifting the Batty O Brien Memorial Cup, in memory of our departed clubman and well know Killarney Angler - the cup being donated to the club by his wife Blanche and family. Entries for this competition can be made to any club officer. Also the Munster Lake Competition entries have closed and we are delighted to have nine anglers fishing this competition for the club in May. This means that the club will have two full teams entered and our hopes are that we can make a strong attempt to win the Best Competing Club Cup in the competition again this year.
