New community hospital: Is it happening or not? EXCLUSIVE
| By Sean Moriarty
Plans for a new community hospital in Killarney are in the final design stages and a planning permission application was due to be submitted by the end of June. That is according to a report that the Health Information and Quality Authority published this week on current activities at Killarney Community Hospital. The report was published on Tuesday, the same day the newly elected Killarney Municipal Council met for the first time. In the course of the meeting Cllr Maura Healy Rae asked: “To ask Kerry County Council and the Department of Health, what is the current update regarding the provision of a new community hospital in Killarney,” As such, this means that Kerry County Council needs to write to the minister of health to get an update on the project. However, official Kerry County Council planning application paperwork seen by the Killarney Advertiser reveals that there was no planning application made on behalf of the HSE up to June 28. “There is a lot of fudging going on,” Cllr Healy Rae told the Killarney Advertiser after the meeting. “I am calling on the government not to back to down on a promise that we would have a new hospital by 2021 and that other projects would not suffer as a result of the cost overrun on the Children’s Hospital in Dublin.” The new hospital cannot come soon enough. The report published on Tuesday did not paint a pretty picture of current goings on at the hospital. Limited availability of single rooms for end of life care; limited privacy and noise
and lack of space in multi-occupancy rooms were just some of the issues highlighted in a report published this week on dementia patient care across the hospital’s three sites. The centre, located on Rock Road is registered to provide long term, respite, palliative and dementia care for 96 residents. Resident accommodation is spread across three separate units; Fuschia which can accommodate 22 residents, Hawthorn which can accommodate 36 residents, and Heather which can accommodate 38 residents. Inspectors carried out an unannounced inspection focused on the care of residents at the hospital in early April this year. Inspectors met with residents, relatives, the provider representative, the person in charge, the two Assistant Directors Of Nursing, nurses, care staff, activities staff, support staff and numerous other staff members. The inspectors found that residents’ overall healthcare needs were met and they had very good access to appropriate medical and allied healthcare services. The quality of residents’ lives was generally enhanced by the provision of a choice of interesting things for them to do during the day and an ethos of respect and
dignity for residents was evident. It follows a previous inspection in October last year. Certain objectives from the previous report were not met. Inspectors found that the Health Service Executive (HSE) failed to take all necessary action to improve the privacy and dignity of residents and that a comprehensive review of occupancy levels was not carried out to inform the profile and number of residents who could appropriately be accommodated in the centre. Long-term residents continued to be accommodated in situations which adversely impacted their daily quality of life, privacy and dignity following a reduction in the number of residents accommodated in the centre. The registered provider had failed to ensure that the space created by the reduced number of residents was utilized in all cases to enhance the quality of life and privacy and dignity of the remaining residents. Inspectors found gaps in documentation and a care plan for a resident that suffered seizures was not sufficiently detailed to direct care. Gaps were seen in wound care documentation where a section was left blank for staff to retrospectively document wound care given, which does not follow with best practice on documentation.
ISSUES: A report showed several issues at Killarney Community Hospital.

on the street.
Following a report in last week’s Killarney Advertiser residents and property owners in Pawn Office Lane just off Main Street have been promised that action will be taken to eliminate anti-social behaviour
The issues were brought to the Killarney Advertiser’s attention by local landlord Ann McEnery. Following the report gardai said they would monitor the area more often and a neighbouring business has offered
to install CCTV cameras that could also monitor the street. “The guards contacted me and said they would keep an eye on things there,” she told the Killarney Advertiser, “Pat Duggan runs Eager’s Newsagents across the road and he is looking in to CCTV but
Local councillor Marie Moloney.
Huge anger as bishop fails to show There was widespread disappointment in the parish of Kilcummin on Tuesday night when Bishop Ray Browne failed to turn up for a public meeting. Local parishioners are reeling from the news that they will no longer have a parish priest following a shakeup in the diocese that will come in to effect on July 17. Ahead of the meeting locals sent the bishop and his secretary a list of 19 questions they wanted answered at the meeting. “There was huge disappointment that Bishop Ray Browne did not attend,” said local councillor Marie Moloney. “There was an understanding he would be there. Locals did not get any reply to any of the points raised in the letter.” Bishop Browne was represented at the meeting by Fr Godley and Fr O’Brien. A large percentage of locals have been withholding donations at the weekly church collection following the announcement that they were to lose their parish priest. “Locals want the bishop to facilitate a meeting with the people of Kilcummin,” added Cllr. Moloney. “They will continue with the collection protest until for the foreseeable future.” the next step is the bins as neither the guards nor the CCTV cameras can see what is going on down the lane as people are hiding behind the bins.” Last week’s Killarney Advertiser reported that sexual acts, binge drinking, drug use and acts of violence and vandalism on the lane ware of major concern to residents and business owners on the street and that children were exposed to such acts as they played there.

Calls for Lyme disease risk signs in parks
Councillors are calling for signs to be erected in the National Park to highlight the potential risk of Lyme Disease. | By Sean Moriarty
DIVIDED: Last year’s decision to pedestrianise Plunkett St has divided councillors
Council split over the future of Plunkett St Elected members of Killarney Municipal District Council are divided over the future of Plunkett St. | By Sean Moriarty Two years ago the council introduced a pedestrian-only plan for the street between 7pm and 7am every day. The recently elected council met for the first time on Tuesday of this week and one of the hottest topics on the agenda was two proposals by elected members to reverse the decision and re-open the street to traffic as soon as possible. Cllr Niall O’Callaghan, who was back in the chamber after a five year absence tabled a motion to reverse the decision to pedestrianise the street. He said the barrier at the top of the street is creating a perception that the town centre ends at the barrier and people are turning around at this point and not visiting businesses along College St. “Business is down 25 per cent on College St,” he told the meeting. The motion was backed by Cllr Donal O’Grady who called for the street to be re-opened as soon as possible, and like O’Callaghan he felt that barrier was affecting business in the area. Opposition for the plan came from both

councillor Brendan Cronin and Mayor Michael Gleeson. “What we have created is a family friendly street where people with buggies or wheelchairs can comfortably relax,” said Cronin. “In the run up to the election I spoke to only three people that had negative views on the street. Killarney is 20 years behind, when it comes to pedestrianising compared to other, even smaller, tourist towns. Business is down because of Brexit and other reasons but not because of Plunket Street.” Mayor Gleeson supported Cronin’s motion. “I have been a very strong advocate of pedestrianising in Killarney,” he said. “Pedestrianising is fundamental to the financial well-being of the town.” A survey of businesses affected by the closure is being carried out by Killarney Municipal District Council but as the closure was sanctioned via a Section 38 order, a second Section 38 process including public consultations would have to carried out before the decision could be reversed.
AGAINST: Niall O'Callaghan, is against pedestrianisation in the town
Lyme disease is an infection that is transmitted by a bite from an infected tick carrying the bug. It is named after the town in Connecticut, USA where the first cases of the condition were identified. The infection is generally mild, affecting only the skin, but can sometimes be more severe, leading to more serious illness and even death. There have been increasing numbers of people suffering from the disease in the Killarney area, according to HSE figures. Eight of the 19 cases reported nationally to mid-December 2016 occurred in Kerry and Cork, figures released by the HSE show. The issue is particularly relevant to Killarney National Park as deer are considered prime carriers of infected ticks. “Due to the continued risk of Lyme Disease, I am requesting that in conjunction with the NPWS, that appropriate signage be erected at all entrances from public areas to Killarney National Park outlining advice on ticks and the necessary precautions and what to look out for,” said councillor Brendan Cronin at the Municipal District of Killarney members meeting on Tuesday this week. Kerry County Council is seeking advice from the HSE in relation to signs at the entrance to the national park. However,
Kerry County Council is not the health body for the county. Last month the council placed Algae warning signs on the shores of some the park's lakes in its capacity as the county’s environmental protection agency. It is understood that the local branch of the National Park and Wild Life Service see the problem as a national one and placing such signs on the entrance of the park may deter people from entering and enjoying the natural amenities.
Greed driving Killarney hospitality price increases | By Sean Moriarty Killarney hoteliers and service providers to the tourist industry are in danger of pricing themselves out of the market. That is according to councillor Donal O’Grady who raised the matter at the first meeting of Killarney Municipal District on Tuesday of this week. Prices have increased since the government increased the VAT rate in the tourism sector from 9 per cent to 13.5 per cent in last year’s budget. Mr O’Grady put forward the motion: “That we Killarney Municipal District would request the Minister of Transport, Tourism and Sport to reverse the increase of rate of VAT in the Tourism Sector, i.e. from 13.5% back to down to
9%, as prices in Killarney have gone far too expensive.” His proposal was backed by councillor Niall O’Callaghan, whose family run the Failte Hotel in the town, but he added that it should be raised with the minister as a national issue and not one particular to Killarney. However Cllr O’Grady revealed that he had done his own ‘spot’ survey in both Tralee and Killarney and found that prices had increased more than the 4.5 per cent imposed by the budget increase. “We are getting close to Dublin prices and if we are not careful we will be priced out of the market,” he told the Killarney Advertiser after the meeting. “We have a great town, let us keep it that way, but I am afraid to say it is greed that is driving these price increases and not Brexit or VAT or anything like that.”

Ten social houses for Killarney
CAMPAIGN
| By Sean Moriarty
Traffic, traffic and traffic Newly elected members of the Killarney Municipal District meet for the first time since May’s election and if there is one topic, above all others, that is going to dominate chamber business for the next five years it is going to be traffic and road safety. | By Sean Moriarty Granted, the elected members have plenty of other things to keep them on their toes like social housing, litter and recycling and business rates but the town’s (and it its environs) traffic problems and road safety seems to be top of the pile, judging by motions discussed at Tuesday’s meeting.
BYPASS
Plans for the bypass road and provisional plans for the outer relief road were discussed at a special meeting of the council
the previous week and reported in last week’s Killarney Advertiser. However with that project high on the agenda there will be need for other road works in the area too. “Now that the TII have confirmed that the constructing a new roundabout on the bypass will improve traffic safety, I propose the construction of a new roundabout at the Madam's Hill junction with the N22 for traffic safety,” said Councillor Brendan Cronin.
RAT RUNS
Cronin also said there was a growing
concern that drivers are using the narrow lanes around O’Sullivan’s Place as a rat run to avoid traffic on Lewis Road at very busy times. A recent traffic survey found that 3,700 cars went through this narrow residential roadway mainly as a shortcut.
MILL ROAD Councillors expressed concerns that pedestrians entering and leaving the INEC complex at the Gleneagle Hotel and walking towards the adjacent car park are in danger of being hit by cars travelling on the Mill Road. There is a perception, especially with visitors that the car park and the INEC are on the same grounds but are actually divided by the busy Mill Road.
Planning permission has been granted for ten social houses on Rock Road on land donated by the Mercy Sisters. The proposed development will include eight two-bedroom apartments and two three-bedroom apartments. Currently there are over 1,200 individuals and families on the social housing waiting list in Killarney and this project will meet the demands of ten of those. Details of the project were unveiled at the Killarney Municipal District elected members meeting in Killarney Town Hall on Tuesday this week. The site is a few metres from the entrance to the new coach and car park on Rock Road and to the east of Coolegrean housing estate. “We all welcome this,” said Mayor Michael Gleeson. “”It is a hugely important development,” said Councillor Brendan Cronin. “And we thank the sisters that we can proceed with it.” It is hoped that construction would be completed by December 2020. The new development will be known as Holy Cross Gardens.
Early morning fire drama at town centre hotel | By Sean Moriarty The Eviston House Hotel on New Street had to be evacuated in the early hours of Sunday morning after a small fire broke out in the popular hotel. Two units of Killarney Fire Brigade attended the scene and was helped by a further unit form Killorglin. “It think there was some small fire in the hotel but it was under control by the fire brigade,” an eye witness told the Killarney Advertiser. “Gardai and ambulance services were also there. The hotel guests had to wait out on the street, which was also very busy with the late night revellers going to Den Joe's.” Once the fire was contained residents returned to the hotel.

Mayor Michael Gleeson welcomed locals and visitors to the festivities. “I welcome you all to this wonderful celebration of our Irish peoples’ involvement in America since the Declaration of Independence,” he told the massive crowd gathered outside
the Town Hall and St Mary’s Church. “This event will reinforce the bonds of friendship that exists between the two countries. I hope we can improve that friendship, socially and politically and make this world a better place.” Now in its fifth year. Killarney is the
only town in Ireland that celebrates America’s biggest holiday in such fashion. “It is a wonderful celebration of our history with America that goes back 200 years since the Irish first started emigrating,” Mayor Gleeson told the Killarney Advertiser. “The Americans pay such an important part in the economic well-being of Killarney and all of County Kerry.” The event is organised by the Chamber of Tourism and Commerce. “It is a way of giving back to the years of tourism America has brought to Killarney,” said chamber president Paul Sherry. After the ceremonial opening the ac-
tion moved to College Square where marching brass bands entertained the crowds and prepared them for the highlight of the evening, the parade which ran from the Outlet Centre to the top of Main Street, flanked by thousands of spectators of every age and nationality. This was followed by a Street Party on Main Street that included wild west hustlers, bank-robbing cowboys, cancan girls and gun toting shysters. Later in the evening Kerry Film Festival presented an outdoor showing of Grease in the grounds of Killareny House before a spectacular firework display brought the evening to a conclusion.

Columnist ANNE LUCEY gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry and beyond
Climate Change debate focussed on wrong issues I have to wonder if the extreme concentration these days on climate change and carbon emissions is not becoming a Trojan Horse for other things. Regular, albeit small protests now take place by two groups outside Kerry Airport against oil exploration, all doubtless arriving in cars powered by diesel or petrol ultimately, even if electric. They are all well intentioned people. But the wider climate change debate has become hysterical. I have previously questioned the use of children in this whole debate sparked by a Norwegian child who seems to be wholly concentrated on the thing. Some of the doom and gloom and end of the world banners used in Dingle and elsewhere with children mitching from school sent a chill down my spine. I do wonder about the legacy these small children will inherit so convinced they are about the end of the world being nigh. I question too if the net effect of the cold reality baths they are getting are
indeed much different from the frightening pictures of hell past generations of children were handed by adults. And is the impetus much the same? A puritan streak to reign in and scare and so control the young minds perhaps? Sometimes we have to look beyond the trees to see the full shape of the forest even if we are part of that forest, me thinks. I have a creeping feeling too that all this "keep it in the ground stuff " is going to act as a Trojan Horse and inside the horse will be the nuclear power industry. The conversation about "phasing out" nuclear has not just been put on the back burner - the prospect of nuclear power in Ireland is being foregrounded. I heard it being slipped into a climate change debate on Radio One. We should explore and debate nuclear in the light of the threat of climate
Killarney National Park not banning glyphosate! It is some years since a certain student came home to my house from his summer working with big machinery on the East Anglian grain farms to tell me about the practice of "killing the crop" spraying Roundup on wheat , and grains before harvest. It is it seems a global practice and the big irony is while the focus is on meat being bad for us, it seems that the stuff we all think is good for us - chickpeas, soya-beans, lentils, peas, wheat, and so on all gets the Roundup the treatment before harvest. People diligently eating breakfast cereal are eating more round-up that the person eating the slice of white bread and butter and slice of ham. And unless it is organic, vegetarians are practically living on the stuff, I came to realise. Vietnam which is still harvesting the consequences of agent orange, has banned it and Australia is the latest
country to have lawsuits filed - ironically one of Australia's biggest export markets is Vietnam. Austria is the first EU country to vote to totally ban the product manufactured in neighbouring Germany - but at least six other EU countries have partial bans. France Europe's biggest producer of grain has promised to phase out glyphosate based weed-killer in grain and in vineyards and in Italy it is banned in public parks and roadside verges, as well as pre-harvest use. Bayer, the manufacturer of course insists it is safe... and the big ag-industry says it needs the weed killer. I asked the Department in control of the NPWS how much of the stuff they use in the Killarney National Park and if they were going to stop using it. No, is the answer to both... no to revealing what quantities are used, and no to stopping its use. It must be something in the Kerry air
change is the consensus! What? Just eight years ago a world-wide phase out prompted by the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster in Japan was widely expected. But so far only Italy has phased out nuclear entirely. And far from being put on the back burner, nuclear power capacity in the world is increasing. There are no fewer than fifty reactors now under construction and others planned. Most are in Asia but I was intrigued to see how the United Arab Emirates is also building one as is Turkey, both oil rich countries you would imagine. Nearer home France is building a new one, as is the UK and Sweden is upgrading its three. We should be careful what we strive for in the rush for a ban on carbon - and consider we may be opening the gates to a far greater evil. Maybe we should go back to reading our children tales like Little Red Riding Good - the tale about the wolf in grandma's clothing! - the council has already not revealed how much of the stuff they use . Do they even know how much they use? A frightening prospect. The NPWS says "Glyphosate is one of the most effective means of killing some of the most problematic invasive plant species, notably Rhododendron ponticum, Japanese Knotweed and Giant Hogweed." And it is "an essential herbicide" in the control of other noxious weeds, it says. And we are all to be reassured by the fact that: " Glyphosate is not broadcast-sprayed on any of our sites. It is used for spot spraying, with weedlickers and for treating stumps.” It goes onto detail how NPWS’ invasive-species eradication programmes over many years have mainly focussed on injection of herbicide into the plant, or application onto cuts made in the stems, rather than spraying, both of which, it says, "greatly reduce the quantity used and human contact with the herbicide.” It also details the safety standards in operation for staff. Still, I wonder how can any weed killer be considered "essential" in a UNESCO biosphere reserve. Or am I missing something?
EU rudeness by new elected British MEPs The rude gesture of 29 of the UK MEPs, out of their total of 73 elected members, turning their unattractive posteriors on the group of fine young chamber musicians and lone opera-singer performing the Ode to Joy at the opening of parliament in Strasbourg was not just chilling, and deeply upsetting. It was telling. Those people, whose ugly backs we were allowed gaze at, represent just less than half the total Great Britain and Northern Ireland MEPs. They represent a good section of the British people and I am reminded British hooliganism and its yob culture is another fine export. And we must remember that although it fought so bravely in World War 2, England had its own brush with fascism with Mosley’s black-shirts and King Edward the admirer of Hitler. And we haven't even mentioned the northern unionists. The turn-your-backside gesture of the Brexiteers this week is fascism at its best - and it stirs the memory of book burnings and other crass and deliberate attacks on culture and the higher arts in the Germany and Austria of the 1930s. It is an ugly, orchestrated move, against good old-European refinement and tradition and was probably designed to hasten us all to want to see the backs of the English, literally. And to encourage us to say bring on Brexit. And shoe them out, and the sooner the better. But this would not be right there is a very decent side to England and what we saw this week in the European parliament is not that side. However, it is chilling to see how close the argument is, and the sides are, in terms of numbers, at least.

The pub musicians of Killarney, who gave up their time and services free of charge were key to the success of a summer barbecue in aid of a suicide prevention charity. | By Sean Moriarty Youth Suicide Prevention Ireland, a national body, with an office in Killarney, want to set up Ireland’s first mobile crisis unit. They need €150,00 to set it up but do not get any government funding. This prompted Killarney woman Fiona O’Sullivan to organise a family fun day on the grounds of St Brendan’s College last Sunday. Several local musicians, most of those who play the pub scene in Killarney during the busy tourist season arrived and played free of charge to the large crowd of over 200 people who had paid €20 to the charity. Over €2000 was raised for YSPI on the day with more expected to come in. “Considering there were other events on like the regatta I think we did very well and it was very good for a first attempt,”
Fiona told the Killarney Advertiser. “The musicians turned up in droves. I think one musician mentioned it to another and word spread very fast in the music community in the town. It showed that they believed in what we were doing and that everyone has been touched by suicide at some point.” Fiona would like to thank the following local businesses who supplied goods or services that added to the success of the event: Kevin O’ Regan from Boru Barbers, Tim Jones donated burgers and Peter and Denise McSweeney from Dinis Cottage took care of the BBQ on the day. Mike O’ Donoghue from Lissivigeen Bouncing Castles provided activities such as an obstacle course and bouncy castle. Lir Café, Aunty Nellies, The Porter House, Killeen House and Salon B donated prizes and MD O’Shea provided the marquee on the day.

“It is not a race, you know”
Up to 6000 cyclists are expected to cycle the 175-kilometre route to raise money for charity and Kerry County Council has passed a temporary road closing order to allow the safe passage of the participants. The official start will take place on the Mission Road in Killarney and this road will be closed to vehicular traffic from 5.00am to 9.00am and again between 11.30am and 8.00pm on Saturday. The main road between Fossa and Killorglin will close between 6.00am and 9.00 am with diversions via Faha , Listry and Miltown in place. The eastbound lane of the Ring of Kerry route between Killorglin to Caragh Bridge will close between 6.00 a.m. to 12 noon.
This closure will start at the Iveragh Road Roundabout via Iveragh Road, Tullig, Quaybaun and finishing at Caragh Bridge and a one-way traffic diversion will be in place for traffic travelling eastbound from Caherciveen and Glenbeigh via Dooks, Cromane, Garraun and Castleconway. Traffic travelling westbound from Killorglin to Glenbeigh will remain on the N70. The Sneem to Molls Gap road will close between 11.00 a.m. to 8.00 p.m As will the Kenmare to Torc Waterfall section via Moll’s Gap. The New Street Car Park will be closed from 7.00am from today, July 5 until to 8.00 p.m. tomorrow (Saturday). There will be access to Killarney Plaza Hotel and other businesses in the upper section of the New Street Car park on both days with limited parking spaces. Plunkett Street, Killarney (from the Junction of Plunkett Street / Main St. to College Square) will be closed from 2.00 p.m. to 10.00 p.m. today (Friday).
Over 6000 cyclists will take to the famed Ring of Kerry 175Km route, for the 36th Annual Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle tomorrow (Saturday). Both men are encouraging cyclists to slow down and enjoy the fun and scenery along the way. The inaugural ‘Triangle Dance’ part of the ‘craic’ at Coomakista pass - the infamous ‘breaking point’, is a new addition to the atmosphere on the day. The National Rehabilitation Hospital (NRH) provides specialist rehabilitation services to patients from throughout Ireland who, as a result of an accident, illness or injury have acquired a physical or cognitive disability and require specialist rehabilitation. It is 35 years since an accident at work resulted in Timo O’Sullivan sustaining life changing injuries, and left him wheelchair bound. Timo is an avid angler, volunteer with many organisations in Kerry, and a wonderful advocate for wheelchair accessibility. Timo spent six months in the expert care of the NRH, recuperating from his injuries and being rehabilitated to help him
cope with his new life. “The treatment and the expert care and lifelong friendship I received from staff at the NRH, has enabled me to carry out every aspect of daily life to the fullest extent. 35 years on, and I am involved in many volunteer organisations in Killarney, beekeeping is my new passion,” said Timo. Ian O’Connell, the inspirational Killarney teenager who sustained serious injuries in a cycle accident two years ago, is currently undergoing rehabilitation at the National Rehabilitation Centre. Ian’s mantra ‘if you can’t stand up…stand out’ gripped the nation. He now has over 42,000 followers on Instagram, through which he offers online support to young people and their families with similar issues in their lives. Ian continues to defy the odds, continuing his school and gruelling rehab every day.

PRAISE: Kerry County Council praised the efficiency of the contractor in completing the work ahead of schedule
Road re-opens in time for Ring of Kerry cycle Organisers of the annual Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle breathed a sigh of relief earlier this week when Kerry County Council announced that the N71 would reopen on Tuesday evening. The road between Torc Waterfall and the carpark for Dinis Cottage has been closed since 24 June to facilitate emergency repairs to a section of the retaining wall and road at Dinis. Works were completed three days ahead of schedule following the suc-
cessful completion of remedial works at Dinis. The council praised the contractor for having the works competed in time for the charity event. “Kerry County Council would like to acknowledge the efficiency of the contractor in completing the work ahead of schedule. The council was anxious that the works would be completed ahead of the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle on Saturday next and is pleased that this has been achieved,” said a council statement.

Great Southern Hotel celebrates its 165th year
The Great Southern Hotel Killarney, this week, celebrated its 165th birthday by unveiling a new history wall in the hotel. the highs and lows since the birth of Irish tourism, Great Southern has been to the fore, from accommodating some of the world’s most famous faces to incarcerating unfortunate unwilling guests, Great Southern has an incredible history and we are honoured to be today’s generation of leaders and to turn the next page on this hotel’s great history,” said owner Joe Scally. Surprise 40th anniversary party for Tony and Marie
When Tony and Marie O’Brien were sent on a sun holiday by their two sons to celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary they did not think there would be a second party. But while they were away their sons Tony Jr and Martin set about turning their Killcummin home into a party zone. “When we came home from Spain there were lights and gazeboes all over the lawn,” said Marie. “It was a huge surprise. I thought the present was the sun holiday.” Tony, from St Mary’s Terrace and Marie from Rockfield were married in Muckross Church on June 29 back in 1969 but it was a small family affair. This time around Tony Jr and Martin invited over 60 family and friends to the celebration. “We were thrilled to bits,” added Marie, “There were 60 or 70 people there so it was a much bigger affair than 40 years
ago.” Guests came from Killarney, Listry, Faha, and Milltown to celebrate the milestone occasion. Some of the guests on the night included Marie’s father Michael Donnelly, her brother Dan and sister Rose and brother-in-law Douglas as well as host of cousins, nieces, nephews and other family members. “Tony Jr is a butcher so he looked after the barbecue and Martin was the barman on the night so the catering was perfect,” added Marie. Her daughter-in-law , Tony’s wife Siobhan and some of her family from Millstreet were also present.

GARDEN MAGIC
Gardening - By Debby Looney

Debugging your garden The height of the summer is the height of bug season. All munching away at our favourite plants – seems like they do not enjoy the natural goodness of weeds at all - and all multiplying at ferocious rates… What to do? There are many sprays on the market, some organic, some poisonous, but all with limited effects. The problem is that most of the bugs fly, so the danger is always that there will be a new batch tomorrow. The only preventative measures which can be taken is to use a systemic spray, which is absorbed into the plant and poisons the bug as it eats. An example of this type of spray would be Provado Ultimate Bug Killer, a ready to use systemic bug killer. Soapy water is still one of the favourite home remedies, as is rapeseed oil in water, at a ratio of 1:20. These both work by blocking the respiratory system of the insect, causing it to die. There are many brands of insect killer on the market, but there are a few things to watch out for. Do not use fly spray for the home, as it will burn the leaves of your plants. Do not choose insect killer containing neonicotinoids, as these also kill bees. Neonicotinoids are also deemed harmful for people and are being phased out. Organic remedies contain fatty acids, and can sometimes taste a bit odd on veggies, so always read the time recommended between spraying and eating. How to recognise what is devouring your plants? In most cases it will be an aphid, of some description and colour. The best known aphids are greenfly, but
they come in green, white, black, brown, and every variation thereof. The damage they do is significant, they suck the sap from the stem of your plant, and then secrete as sticky substance called honeydew. This prevents photosynthesis taking place causing further damage to the plant. They are often seen clustered together in colonies, they procreate fast. The trick is to know their life cycle. Eggs overwinter on a host plant, such as an apple tree, and when these eggs hatch, the insects are wingless. They multiply until the food source runs out, and the next generation has wings, in order to be able to migrate to a fresh food source. Now, if you catch the flies at the wingless phase, you can avert many problems - and generations - to come. This preventative measure works especially well in a closed system such as a greenhouse. Holes appearing in leaves can be due to several insects, such as vine weevils. Adult vine weevils are a dark grey beetle with a snout, coming out at night to have a munch. You will see them on sunny days basking on a wall, but they are pretty elusive generally. The damage they do to the plant is not that significant, however their larvae eat the roots of the plants and are usually fatal. If you see a vine weevil squish it! There are nematodes which can be applied to the soil which will destroy the larvae, however it is a fairly costly measure and is best kept for pots. The best way to prevent large infestations of pests is to have a diverse environment, which will encourage natural predators.

Going green with your credit union The sale of electric and hybrid cars is on the rise as Irish consumers become increasingly concerned with the environmental impact of emissions. According to the latest statistics from the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI), more electric cars have been registered in the first three months of this year than the whole of 2018. The SIMI figures show that 1,437 were registered here by the end of March, compared with 1,233 over the 12 months of 2018. Generally, electric cars and hybrids are more expensive to buy (although this can be off-set by the fuel savings). So, it’s important that these consumers are also not paying more than they should on their car finance. Headline rates on PCPs (Personal Contract Plans) can seem very low and appear like very attractive deals. In reality they are one of the most complex and least flexible forms of car finance. Helen Courtney Power, Business Development Officer, Killarney Credit Union is urging these consumers to ensure they are fully informed about PCPs – and says they should consider a credit union car loan before making the final decision to enter one of these finance arrangements. “It’s very encouraging to see the consumer make a more ethical choice when it comes to car purchases. We would also urge them to make a more ethical choice when it comes to their car finance. Credit unions are the most ethical lenders in Ireland, offering straightforward loans with very flexible terms and transparent terms and conditions. For example, there will never
be any hidden charges or admin fees with our loans, nor will there be any stressful balloon payment at the end of the loan term. We will work with borrowers to ensure the loan repayments are structured in a way that best suits their financial circumstances.” With PCP agreements however, the contract terms are fixed, so consumers can neither extend the term of the loan, nor increase their monthly repayments. Other limitations include sticking to an agreed mileage limit and committing to certain car services. Not to mention the fact that the consumer never actually owns the car until they pay off the balloon payment. None of these limitations apply to a credit union car loan. Helen says; “When you opt for a credit union car loan, you own the car straight away. You can drive it as much as you want, and sell it on whenever you might need to. This is simply not an option with a PCP as you are effectively only renting the car.” “We would really urge those opting for the electric or hybrid cars to seriously consider the benefits of a credit union car loan. Credit unions are not-for-profit, so our main concern when we are lending is the financial well-being of the borrower. Restaurants Association 'permit regime a shambles'
Penneys celebrates 50 years of business Since opening its first store on Mary Street, Dublin in 1969, Penneys has become a much loved brand with Irish and international fashion fans alike. Today the company has 372 stores in 12 countries, over 75,000 employees and over 15 million sq. feet of retail space, bringing ‘Amazing Fashion at Amazing Prices’ to everyone. Penneys, which operates as Primark outside of Ireland, has become an inter-

national success story over the last five decades. The company opened its first UK store in 1973, and began expanding into Europe in 2006 opening in Spain, followed by the Netherlands, Portugal, Germany, Belgium, Austria, France, the US and Italy. Last month saw the business open a store in Slovenia, marking its entry into Central Eastern Europe, with plans to open more new stores in Poland and the Czech Republic in the
future. Earlier this year, the company opened its largest store in Birmingham, spanning five floors and covering 160,000 sq. feet of retail space. It features Primark’s biggest beauty studio to date, a barbers and 3 new dining experiences, including the hugely popular Primark Café with Disney. Speaking about the 50-year milestone, Primark CEO, Paul Marchant said: “The doors to the very first Penneys opened on Mary Street 50 years ago on Tuesday, and I am so proud of everything we have achieved together in that time - starting from humble beginnings with just one store to now serving over one million customers a day.”
What was supposed to happen in Washington DC on July 4 If President Trump got his way yesterday, military tanks would have paraded down the streets of Washington as part of his elaborate Fourth of July celebration. While Trump relentlessly hyped the event on Twitter in the days leading up to the holiday, tanks were transported through the streets of DC on Tuesday evening in scenes that evoked images of countries ruled by militarised regimes. This year's annual Independence Day celebration on the National Mall, in Washington DC was set to feature,
flyovers, fireworks, and an address by President Donald J. Trump. “Salute to America” will honour each of the nation’s five service branches with music, military demonstrations, multiple flyovers including a flight demonstration by the Blue Angels, - the US equivalent of Britain’s Red Arrows. “The Navy’s Blue Angels will perform a flight demonstration at President Donald Trump’s Fourth of July celebration,” said Interior Secretary David Bernhard. “The celebration includes a parade honouring Independence Day
The Restaurants Association of Ireland have called the increase processing times for work permit applications a shambles. Since mid-June 2019, the processing times for work permit-applications has increased by two weeks to 13 weeks. “The current process for work permit applications is not fit for purpose. Reform is needed to ensure that employers and employees don’t lose out because of failings within the work permit application centre,” Adrian Cummin, the CEO of the Association, said, "The Restaurant Sector are calling for a National Skills Shortage Summit in light of failings by the Department of Business, Enterprise & Jobs where employers, agencies and Departments can agree emergency actions to solve the skills shortage in Ireland."
and will also feature a fife and drum corps, military units and drill teams. President Trump’s ‘Salute to America’ Fourth of July event in Washington, D.C. is primed to be one of the longest fireworks shows and will feature a flyover by the U.S. Navy Blue Angels. New details released by the Interior Department show that the annual spectacle that has been amped up.” Independence Day celebrations, marking the United States 243rd birthday, culminate with a spectacular fireworks display over the National Mall. The fireworks will be launched from West Potomac Park and behind the Lincoln Memorial. They will be visible from locations throughout D.C. and Northern Virginia.

Killarney Credit Union joins forces with Metamo to deliver improved service
Time for the sheep to get their haircuts The largest sheep shearing event in Munster will once more take place at the Top of Coom Kilgarvan on Sunday July 14, beginning at 9am. As always the individual sheep shearing competitions causes a flurry of excitement with each offering something different, the hand shearing competition offers us a unique look back at a rural Ireland and farming pre electricity, the local competition enthrals the crowd like no other and the speed competition just brings the excitement to fever pitch, with cheering that may some year lift the roof off the shearing shed. Top Irish shearers as well as some of a great international talent will participate Another crowd favourite is the ladies competition, which will be hotly contested this year with Kerry’s own All Ireland
champion Breeda Lynch in tremendous form. Last year’s winner Joanne Devaney will be on hand to offer good competition. “Last year’s dog trials were such a success we happy to announce their return. Watching the shepherd/dog handler work with his dog, rounding up the sheep and go through all the tests laid out for them, really is a thrill not to be missed. It really was one of the highlights of the day last year,” said organiser Eileen Creedon. It is a day for the whole family with bouncy castles, Ice cream, BBQ and music to entertain people of all ages throughout the day. This is great day to meet people you haven’t seen in a while, a day to enjoy the skill of sheep shearing, dog handling, the entertainment, share a laugh and enjoy the company of those you meet, rural Ireland at its best.

SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL
Beauty - By Jill O'Donoghue
Jill is available for advice and beauty consultations, at Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio. Call 064 6632966
Beauty is skin deep Having good skin is key to looking and feeling good. It important to treat it right. Your make up will go on much better and look better with less effort if it’s at its best. Your skin is the largest organ in the body, we need to look after it. Many of us love buying the new and hottest products in the market. But more often than not we are using the products wrong. So it’s important to read the instructions and be sure they are suitable for your skin type. If you are in doubt it is time for help, book a skin consultation and bring all your products that you have, and probably have them for the past few years. They have an expiry-date so it’s time to put them in order and de cutter. Getting professional advice always helps to re-energise and motivate you to get the best out of what you have. I often do this process with clients and mostly what I find is people don’t know the value of what they actually have or
how to use correctly to get the value from it. Also they often have three of the same cream and use a different one every day so never seem to get the full value from any one product, even if it’s supposed to be the next big thing how would you ever know if you don’t give it a full chance? Also people tell me that they have a reaction to all eye creams and to be honest it’s usually application that is causing the issue and something that is easily fixed at a skin consultation. All these big skin care brands wouldn’t be in business if they didn’t know what they were doing.

Last Sunday’s event may have got off to a slow start because of a high winds on the lake but once things got going it was a non-stop action packed day. All six clubs from the town took the waters supported by huge crowds, who were entertained by commentator Kieran Murphy. Top club on the day went to Muckross who took home more silverware than the rest of the clubs combined. “As the day progressed we could see that Muckross Rowing Club was shining through,” event PRO Kathy Brosnan told the Killarney Advertiser. “With 11 out 16 wins the points cup was heading for Muckross for sure.” There was a very tight finish between the Workmen and Muckross in the sen-
ior ladies competition but the workmen ladies ploughed on for the win – they also won the senior ladies 4s. Fossa won the junior ladies 4s and 6s and Flesk took the novice 6s. All other classes were won by Muckross Rowing Club members. “Well done to all rowers who competed,” added Kathy . “I would like to thank everyone who was involved in the organising and running of this event and look forward to amother successful Killarney Regatta next year.” On Tuesday night of this week, the annual prize presentation and dance was held at the Oaks Hotel where Rebecca O’Connell from Fossa Rowing Club was crowned Queen of the Regatta.

World debut for Audi Q7 on Kerry roads Eagle-eyed Kerry petrolheads will be the first people in the world to see the new Audi Q7 driven in public. The German marque has chosen Kerry to demonstrate the new car to international motoring journalists and from July 15 several versions of the new car will be driven on Kerry roads ahead of its European launch later this summer. The new Q7 has a striking new visual design and top of the line connectivity. The premium SUV features the new design of the Q family and offers superb dynamics and excellent comfort, in addition to its superior spaciousness. Mild hybrid technology, the digital operating concept and the optional HD Matrix LED headlights including laser light are just some of the highlights. The new Audi Q7 will be launched in Ire-
land later in the year. Ahead of its launch Audi will fly in motoring journalists from all over Europe where they will be the first people to test drive the new car. Each day of the two-week exercise will be dedicated to journalists from one particular country. They will arrive by private jet in to Kerry International Airport from Audi’s headquarters in Ingolstadt in Germany where they will be introduced to the car and given the opportunity to test drive it on some of the county’s best known driving roads. Their findings and photographs of the car on Moll’s Gap and the Wild Atlantic Way will be published in nearly every major car magazine in the world. Audi engineers will stay in the Killarney region for the two weeks of the event.

Toyota Camry return to Kerry roads A new Toyota Camry this week hit Kerry roads for the first time in 15 years. Despite the Camry being the best-selling car in its class world-wide it has not been marketed in Western Europe since 2004. The all-new Camry is the eighth generation of a model that has won countless awards and distinctions since it first went on sale in 1982. The car is sold in more than 100 countries globally, with sales totalling over 19 million units to date.
The Japanese brand reintroduced the car to Ireland earlier this year saying: “The current increasing interest and demand for hybrid vehicles paves the way for the re-introduction of the Camry in Western Europe after an absence of 15 years.” Bowlers Toyota in Killarney sold the latest Camry to Patrick Foley of Beaufort who becomes the first new generation Camry hybrid buyer in Killarney. The last Toyota Camry were retailed in Ireland in 2005 and Bowlers own a 2004 example bridging the 15 year gap since the car was last seen new on Kerry roads.

The 2008 was the 2018 Irish Car of the Year and has received top reviews in the motoring press. Since Irish registrations switched to the county designations in 1987 the number 1 plate has been highly south after. Back in 2013 the decision was taken to split each year into two periods so now there tthere is a 1 plate available n January and July making them doubly sought after.
In all that time Reen’s Garage in Rathmore never had the honour of selling the first car of the season – until this week. “It is the first time we got the 1 plate, “ said dealer principal John Reen. “As long and all that we are around this is the first time and very pleased with that. It is all done on-line now and that was the number that came out. Our sales so far for 191 cars has been brilliant and we have the full range of Peugeot models in stock in Rathmore if anyone wold like a test drive.”
Vintage club revving up for annual show day Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Charity Club members are flat out preparing for their annual car show on Sunday July 21. The event will take place at Killarney Racecourse with hundreds of classic and vintage cars and tractors expected to attend. There are several new innovations for 2019 including a section dedicated to
racing motor cycles and historic rally cars. Plans are in place to use the ambulance track at the racecourse for a live lowspeed demonstration run featuring all vehicles on display. “It is a great family fun day,” said PRO Tom Leslie. “There will be prizes for the oldest car, tractor and motorcycle.” Admission if €5 and the show opens at 11am.

COMMUNITY NOTES Workmen’s Rowing Club REGATTA: All crews headed to Killarney Regatta on Sunday and thoroughly enjoyed the historic local rivalry in the Killarney Sixes. All competing had great races and gave some amazing finishes but it was the Senior Ladies Sixes and Senior Ladies Fours who came in to take nail-biting first places. In the Senior Ladies Fours were: Miriam Fleming, Annie O’Donoghue, Ciara Moynihan and Ciara Browne; and joining them for another victory in the Sixes were: Mary Moynihan and Pauline O’Brien, with cox Michael O’Donoghue. Well done to all who took part for the first time to Peter & Aideen on the BBQ, the bakers, to all coaches, coxes, those who helped with the pier, tent and furniture. Many thanks also to the Committee of Killarney Regatta for their smooth running of this historic event. FUNDRAISING: Our annual street collection: Sat 12th July. We need volunteers to do 2 hour slots in town from 10am to 6pm. Please sign up at the clubhouse. UPCOMING EVENTS: Irish Rowing Championships 12th July (3 days). Sive County Championships - 21st July. Fenit County Championships- 4th August. All-Ireland Coastal Rowing Championships - 17th & 18th August, Dingle.
Muckross Rowing Club REGATTA: The celebrations will continue at the Muckross shore for some time yet as the club happily reflects on a highly successful day at last Sunday’s Killarney Regatta. The club secured no less than 11 wins and was in the top two of all 16 races. The Juvenile boys kick-started the Muckross run, with an impressive 1-2 finish by our A and B crews and a fourth place finish by the C crew. Not to be outdone, additional gold medals were secured by the Juvenile Ladies and both Minor Ladies and Men’s crews of Muckross to complete a clean sweep of the underage races. It was also a record day for the adult men of Muckross as both our Junior and Senior Men’s Sixes crews powered to victory with clear water in both races. Their winning streak was extended by the end of the day, to include both the Junior and Senior Fours and completing another great sweep at these levels. There was experience on show at Veteran level, where Muckross secured another double to win both Men’s and Ladies races while a young Novice Ladies crew were also triumphant. The club was second in the Men’s Novice Sixes, Junior Ladies Sixes and Fours and Senior Ladies Sixes and Fours.
Community Games FOOTBALL: The Killarney Community Games U10 Gaelic football team travelled to Limerick last Saturday for their preliminary game v Tipperary in the superb UL pitch. The team played really
well starting with the impressive James O’Callaghan in goal with full backs Jayden Hurley and Ryan Twomey making vital clearances ably assisted by the tenacious half backs Paddy Noonan and Eanna Hennigan. Luke O’Shea and Oisin Walsh dominated the midfield exchanges and the forwards were led by the free scoring Jack Culloty ably assisted by Michael McElligott, Jamie Fleming and Ronan McCarthy. Conor McElligott, Callum Cox and Kieran Kelly did really well when introduced. Missing was Dara Sugrue (holidays) and the boys got great support from the injured Liam Quirke. The boys play the Munster semi-final and final on the 3rd and 4th July play off in Na Gaeil, Tralee pitch next Saturday at 12am with the second game at 3pm. All support for the boys would be very welcome as the 3 Killarney clubs Crokes, Legion and Spa are represented. They play Clare champions in the semi-final with the winners v Cork or Waterford in the Munster Final. Thanks to the management team of Seanie Culloty, John O’Shea, Billy Hennigan and Kieran McCarthy. Thanks to all the parents for the brilliant support. Best of luck to all.
Kilcummin PARISH PRIEST: The 11.15am mass in Kilcummin Church last Sunday was a historic and sad occasion as it marked the end of a resident Parish Priest in the Parish. While parishioners always feared that it was something that could happen no one expected it to come so suddenly and without prior notice to the community. Parishioners were in total shock and disappointed when the news broke that we were going lose our Parish Priest Fr. Eamonn Mulvihill. Fr Eamonn had served the Parish for the past two years with great enthusiasm, commitment and energy and was very well respected and liked by young and old alike who came in contact with him. His good humour and wit was much appreciated by all. We wish Fr. Eamonn well as he takes up his new ministry as PP in Castlegregory. SUMMER CAMP: There are still a limited number of places available for ‘Kilcummin Steps & Tunes Summer Camp’ which takes place next in the Recreational Hall from 10am to 2pm. The camp promises to be a week of fun with Set, Sean Nós and Brush Dancing with Adrian, music sessions, face painting and loads more fun and games. Children 4 years and upwards welcome. Fee €55 per child, concession for two. Enquiries and booking to Adrian 087-9330768 SOUTH KERRY PARKINSON’S MEETING: South Kerry Parkinson’s next meeting on Tuesday 9th July from 7-9pm in the meeting rooms at the Church of the Resurrection, Park Road. For information call Connie Doolan on 087 9579214.

Galway or Mayo? Rivals go head-to-head for shot at Kerry in Killarney Galway dangerman Shane Walsh. Pic: Piaras Ó Mídheach/Sportsfile.
Beaten Connacht finalists Galway and league champions Mayo will go head-to-head in Limerick on Saturday with the winners joining Donegal and Kerry in Group 1 of this year’s Super 8s. That round robin phase will get underway next weekend and The Kingdom will kick things off with a home game in Killarney against whichever side prevails in the Gaelic Grounds tomorrow evening. Early reports indicate that the Kerry game will take place on Sunday at 4pm. It will be a keenly anticipated opener regardless of the opposition, although for obvious reasons the prospect of taking on Mayo in the Fitzgerald Stadium in a big championship match will be particularly appealing to the green and gold faithful. Mayo are the only team to have beaten Kerry so far this season and James Horan’s men managed that feat twice, first in the league in Tralee and then in the league final in Croke Park in March. They also put paid to Kerry’s All-Ireland aspirations in 2017 when they defeated Eamonn Fitzmaurice’s charges at the semi-final stage. Revenge would be sweet, especially at home, but given the recent history between the sides you would imagine that Mayo would fancy their chances. Of course, Kerry also have some scores to settle with their other possible opponents in Round 1, Galway. The Tribesmen’s shock victory in the opening fixture of last year’s Super 8s left Kerry scrambling and they were subsequently eliminated after failing to pick up enough points in their remaining two games. An opening day loss could well prove
fatal again this time out, especially with Ulster champions Donegal up next the following week, so whomever Kerry face on July 14 they will have to be at their best. If things don’t go to plan, the last (and easiest) fixture, which will be against either Meath or Clare, might be of little consequence. Galway may have progressed further than Mayo in this year’s Connacht championship but they were far from impressive in their quarter-final win against London. A facile victory over Sligo was followed by defeat to Roscommon in the final so it’s possible that confidence within the camp might not be all that high. Mayo, on the other hand, have rolled on through the Qualifiers, despite facing potential banana skins and a mounting injury count along the way. That packed treatment room is a huge worry for James Horan. Midfielders Tom Parsons, Séamus O’Shea and Matthew Ruane are all long-term absentees and Mayo must now make do without Diarmuid O’Connor (broken wrist) and former Player of the Year Lee Keegan, who hurt his ankle last Saturday against Armagh. At time of going to print, Keegan was not expected to feature against Galway. It’s sure to be a bruising encounter in Limerick tomorrow evening. From Kerry’s point of view, the more bruising the better. VERDICT: Mayo by 1.

5.07.2019
Red Hand set to join the Dubs in Group 2 Last year’s beaten All-Ireland finalists Tyrone are on the cusp of a return to the Super 8s following last weekend’s impressive 2-22 to 1-15 over Kildare in Newbridge. Standing in their way in the final phase of the Qualifiers are Cavan, who find themselves in Round 4 by virtue of their defeat to Donegal in the Ulster final back on June 24. Mickey Harte’s men dominated proceedings in Kildare as their recent return to a more cautious style of play again seemed to reap plenty of dividends. Tyrone packed numbers behind the ball and then attacked at great speed, finding their dangerous target man Cathal McShane time and time again. McShane registered five points in total (two frees) and Darren McCurry added 1-2, while the ever-reliable Peter Harte tacked on 0-7 (three frees) for the Red Hand County. Having ran a strong Donegal side quite close in the Ulster semi-final, Tyrone have also caught the eye while rolling through the back door and they will be fancied to go at least one step further and join the Dubs in Group 2 of the Super 8s. Cavan, meanwhile, have taken a lot of people by surprise in this year’s championship. They knocked last year’s All-Ireland semi-finalists Monaghan out of Ulster and also handled Armagh after a replay in the last four. The worry for Cavan is that the nature of their defeat to Donegal in the final (they were flattered by the 2-17 to 1-24 scoreline) has halted their momentum. Tyrone, on the other hand, look like they’re moving through the gears. VERDICT: Tyrone by 4.
CORK V LAOIS
Not many people believed in Cork at the start of the year but encouraging performances against Limerick and Kerry in Munster have changed all that. With players like Killian O’Hanlon, Ruairí Deane and Brian Hurley having a big impact, The Rebels have exceeded expectations to date and optimism is understandably high over the border. Not
that the Cork faithful will be expecting their side to make too many waves this summer - it’s a bit early for that kind of talk - but the signs do seem to suggest that Cork will be taking part in their first ever Super 8s in a week’s time. Of course, a relatively friendly draw against Laois (as opposed to Tyrone or Mayo) has helped many observers to arrive at that conclusion. Ronan McCarthy has made two changes for Saturday’s game against Laois as Thomas Clancy and Kevin O’Driscoll come in for Tom Clancy and Paul Kerrigan. For their part, Laois have recovered well from their 11-point hammering at the hands of Meath to defeat Derry and Offaly in the Qualifiers. The reward for victory in this one? An away tie seven days later against Dublin. VERDICT: Cork by 3.
CLARE V MEATH
Clare gave Kerry a right good rattle in Munster and they have also done well in the Qualifiers, beating Leitrim and Westmeath en route to Round 4. Influential midfielder Gary Brennan was particularly inspirational down the stretch last weekend, fetching a monumental high ball in additional time to secure a crucial mark and kill the contest. Meath are another team who had the wind well and truly taken out of their sails in the provincial final. Their demoralising 1-17 to 0-4 defeat at the hands of Dublin will go down as one of the worst in the history of the Leinster Championship. Their form prior to that had been decent, however. They topped Division 2 of the National League before successfully navigating the earlier rounds of Leinster, beating Offaly, Carlow and Laois along the way. VERDICT: Meath by 2.

Spa score rare win over neighbours DIVISION 1 __________________________________________________
Spa
1-14 | Dr Crokes 0-15
TULLIG
A pair of late points by dynamic all-rounder Shane Cronin helped seal a memorable victory for Spa on Saturday night as they defeated fierce rivals Dr Crokes in Round 7 of the County League. Crokes led by four points as the half-time whistle approached but a crucial stoppage time goal by Ciarán Spillane cut the deficit to one. It was tight throughout the second half and when Spa wing back Gary Vaughan fisted a point in the 50th minute, the sides were level at 1-10 to 0-13. Talismanic Crokes forward Kieran O’Leary was shown the line just minutes later and Spa smelled blood, but Michael Casey steadied the ship for the black and amber by kicking his third point of the day. Niall McCarthy soon equalised for Spa but Mark O’Shea restored the visitors’ advantage with a great score. Shane Cronin made it all square when he collected a rebound and knocked over his second point of the day, and the same man gave the hosts a decisive lead in the closing minutes when his shot struck the inside of the post and went over. Ryan O’Carroll put the final nail in the coffin deep into additional time and Spa’s players and supporters could finally celebrate a senior win over the Crokes, the club’s first in quite some time. The result leaves Spa joint first in Division 1 with just four games remaining.

A point by Dean Fitzgerald and two late frees from the boot of Chrissy Spiers salvaged a point for Rathmore as they played out a low-scoring draw with Legion in Derreen. Early goals by Matthew O’Flaherty and Billy O’Connor proved to be the difference in Kilcummin as Dingle defeated the hosts with two points to spare. Austin Stacks moved into pole position on points difference following a massive 2-24 to 2-2 victory over Templenoe. Darragh O’Brien (1-5) and Darragh O’Brien (0-4) top scored for the Senior Club champions. Kerins O’Rahilly’s joined their crosstown rivals at the summit of Division 1 courtesy of a fine 2-15 to 1-10 away to An Ghaeltacht. Former Kerry star Barry John Keane kicked five points in either half for Strand Road. At the foot of the table, St Mary’s picked up their first win of the campaign by narrowly defeating fellow strugglers Na Gaeil in Cahersiveen.

A feast of summer soccer enjoyed by young and old Local soccer players flocked to Woodlawn these past two weeks to take part in the 43rd Annual Killarney Athletic 7-A-Side, which was held once again in association with main sponsors Killarney Credit Union. Hundreds of eager footballers, from under 10 right up to over 35, put their skills to the test at the famous old grounds of The Blues with plenty of healthy competition enjoyed by all. It was an extra special tournament for Athletic as it marked the very first time the club’s new all-weather surface was used in the 7-A-Side. Some of the youngsters were given the opportunity to try out the fabulous new facility
while the older lads duked it out on the grass pitches, a set-up that organisers say worked very well. In a departure from previous years, the 2019 tournament was run off over a two-week period with the finals in all competitions taking place last night (Thursday) and tonight (Friday). Young Beaufort cyclist answers Ireland’s call The dedicated work of Killarney Cycling Club’s Youth Academy has borne fruit with the selection of 16-year-old Beaufort cyclist Patrick Galvin to the Irish Youth Team, who will contest the Errigal International Youth Tour during the August Bank Holiday weekend.

TRIVIA Which NBA team drafted Kevin Durant in 2007? Tweet your answers to @AdvertiserSport or @AdamMoynihan! LAST WEEK’S QUESTION SOCCER: Jamaica, Haiti, Japan and _________. ANSWER: Answer: Qatar. These are the only four teams who have participated in the Copa America but have never won a game. Well done to William Foley who emailed the correct answer to sport@killarneyadvertiser.ie.
Based in Churchill in County Donegal, this prestigious four-stage event attracts the very best of Ireland’s young riders as well as top development squads from Britain and the continent. “Patrick has been with us since he was 10, encouraged by his parents Linda and Michael, and getting on this team was one of his major goals for the year,” said Stephen Daly, Chairperson of the Killarney club’s youth academy. “He has all the qualities of a top athlete and is a pure gentleman to deal with. He’s not a bit big-headed in spite of his various
successes.” Patrick is the second Killarney rider to make an Irish team this year. Senior rider Conor Kissane got the call up for Rás Mumhan in May and, coincidentally, Conor is also involved in providing individualised coaching to members of the club’s youth academy, Patrick included. The manager and selector of the Irish Youth Team for the event, Dan Curtin, also described Patrick as a promising all-round rider. “He has good endurance and can sprint, and he’s good to read a race,” Curtin said. “He has learned a lot since joining Cycling Ireland’s Youth Academy and the experience of being on a national team at this level will help his development.” The Killarney club will be making the long trek to Donegal with 10 other young riders and are hopeful of podium places for some of the dedicated squad.

No rest for the winners | By Sean Moriarty
Killarney’s Paul Nagle and his Waterford driver Craig Breen had little time to celebrate winning last weekend's Ypres Rally in Belgium. This weekend they will begin preparations for their Hyundai Motorsport World Rally team debut. On the eve of the Belgian event they were announced as the third crew that will tackle next month’s Rally Finland for the Korean manufacturer marking their first World Rally Championship outing this season.
They will also tackle next weekend’s Rally Estonoia as a preparation event, but first this weekend they will drive the Hyundai i20 World Rally Car for the first time as part of a pre-event test organised by the Germany-based team. The test come just days after they won last weekend’s Ypres Rally, one of the most significant victories in their careers. The 55th edition of the Renties Ypres Rally, Belgium’s biggest rally, was held in a scorching heat. For Nagle it was the second time that he stood on the top step of the famous
Ypres podium having previously won the event in 2009 alongside Kris Meeke while Breen was making up for the disappointment of retiring from the lead of the 2015 event when the engine in his Peugeot 208 overheated. Driving a Volkswagen Polo R5 for the first time, the Irish crew dominated Ypres proceedings and finished 45 seconds ahead of Dutch ace and 2017 event -winner Kevin Abbring, a former Peugeot Sport teammate of Breen, in another Polo. “It is nice to win here,” said Breen. “It is a famous rally, which is very important to

me personally. We had a perfect weekend. The Polo GTI R5 is without doubt the best R5 car I have ever driven. It is almost like driving a WRC car.” Abbring, was fastest over the opening three stages on Friday night but Breen took over the lead on the fourth test and never looked back. The Irish crew quickly found their groove in their Bernard Munster Autosport run Volkswagen and they increasingly distanced themselves from the competition, thanks in part to a small mistake by Abbring. From there, on a warm Saturday, Breen braved the heat to win the Ypres Rally for the first time. They dedicated their win to former Rally of the Lakes winner Manus Kelly who lost his life in an accident in the Donegal International Rally the weekend before. "I love the stages in Ypres and it is an internationally renowned rally where I really wanted to win,” said Breen. "Last weekend I lost a good friend in Donegal with Manus Kelly and it was an emotional weekend. We certainly have his family in mind.” Abbring, the winner in 2017 and was navigated for the first time by Veronique Hostens, battled with Breen all day, but he had to be satisfied with the second place. The gap was 45.70 seconds but he lost 25 seconds in the last stage (Watou) with a puncture. "The car was perfect, but I made a small mistake Friday night and perhaps I had a fraction less pace than Craig. To come back, I had to take too many risks, but I definitely wanted to finish,” said Abbring.
