The business community is preparing to put the town back on the map and is calling on Killarney natives to lend a hand. Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce is producing a series of promotional videos that show local people enjoying the best of the town, its famous beauty spots and its wide variety of attractions. They want local people to feature in the videos and are calling on townsfolk to get in touch with them. The idea is to record locals visiting their favourite location, either an iconic site or one that only locals would know about, and collate the various recordings in to several promotional videos that will be broadcast on as many social media platforms as possible. They want to record locals engaging in a favourite pastime, like cycling, fishing, golfing or walking, while using a local beauty spot or attraction as backdrop. The video will be created by a professional production company, all locals need to do is contact the company (details at the end of the article) and set up a time and a place. The production company will take care of the rest and as a result locals will become the stars of the latest video that will be used to promote our town to the world. “The point of this shoot is to show how it feels to be in Killarney, not how Killarney looks and the people in the shots are central to this. We want to film people that do not look out of place in various

locations in Killarney town and National Park,” said Adrian McCarthy of Grandview Media. “Participants will be doing something for a few seconds that they have done before. Walking, cycling, hiking, taking a photo, standing admiring a view. They will not be expected to be an actor.” The producers are particularly looking for families with school-going children who enjoy the great outdoors, and who hike in places like Torc Waterfall, Dinis Cottage, Strickeen and the Old Kenmare Road. They are also looking for participants in their 20s who would showcase an ideal weekend in Killarney, promoting the vibrant town centre and more adventurous activities like horse-treking, mountain biking, water sports or rock climbing. “As well as some well-known spots, we are going to go a little bit off the beaten track but not so far away that you would only find locals there,” added McCarthy. “If you or anyone in your circle fits the brief now is your moment to offer up some of your time. Real people who actually know each-other are better onscreen than models or actors.”

If you like to participate in this project get in touch with Adrian McCarthy of Grandview Media on 086 1582923 who will explain the specific requirements of the project and book and create an appointment to record the video.

Nana meets grandson for the first time | By Sean Moriarty
EXCLUSIVE
MESSAGE OF HOPE: Despite being off the road, due to COVID-19 restrictions, O'Callaghan Coaches have left this positive message on one of their coaches which is parked on its premises in Rockfield
Coach industry needs to be included in overall tourism rescue plan
There were emotional scenes at one Listry household over the weekend after a Killarney grandmother held her only grandson for the first time. Baby Max Jones was born on March 23, just over ten days after the full national lockdown came into force. As a result of the restrictions his parents Ballyspillane man Alan Jones and his partner Aoife McCarthy were not able to allow any visitors to their Listry home. They were already proud parents to 22-month-old Emmie and Alan’s sister has a three-year-old daughter Olive but baby Max was the first-born grandson in
the family. Alan’s mother Ann Marie used to drive by his house on a regular basis but was only able to see her first grandson through the window. That all changed on Saturday when Alan and Aoife decided to surprise Ann Marie and allow her to hold Max for the first time. “She was coming over anyway but only expected the usual waving through the window,” Alan told the Killarney Advertiser. “We gave her a mask, walked away and left her too it. She was speechless for a few minutes and then started telling Max about all the time they need to catch up on – he wasn’t saying anything, obviously – it was lovely moment.”
A Killarney coach tour operator is calling on the government to provide more clarity on the rules that affect the sector so he can go about re-opening his business. | By Sean Moriarty O’Callaghan Coaches, which is based in Rockfield, on the Tralee road, is one of Ireland’s longest established tour providers. The family run business has been in operation for 51 years and boss Phillip O’Callaghan is concerned about the future of the industry. He says the government, which is trying to re-start the tourism industry, has over looked coach providers in its plans. The government has outlined plans for the hotel and aviation industry but he says there is no point in bringing plane loads of tourists into the country and booking them into hotels if they cannot be transported from an airport to their destination. “All elements of the industry need to work together,” he told the Killarney Advertiser, “The is no road map for re-starting our type of business.” O’Callaghan provides a range of high-end packages for tourists, and every year, invests heavily in acquiring new coaches and buses. Older buses are transferred to other parts of the business like schools

runs or sports team transport. “We have a big financial commitment and the industry needs help, without it could be catastrophic for coach operators,” added Mr O’Callaghan. He is also worried about social distancing regulations on coaches and says operating to one-third of his capacity on each coach simply would not pay. Meanwhile Kerry TD Norma Foley says no measure should be off the table when it comes to grant aid to restart our economy. She was responding to queries from bus and coach companies concerned about their future following the impact of COVID-19 on their business. “Social distancing guidelines have huge ramifications for the viability of bus and coach operators. Specific grant supports must be put in place to make these measures possible for operators to implement. In fact, a whole raft of supports must be urgently considered to support this sector including the possibility of setting up a Public Transport Recovery Task Force must also be examined,” she said.

Local band to launch new album tonight
Killarney band will launch their debut album live on the Tatler Jack’s Lockdown Live Facebook page later this evening (Friday) | By Sean Moriarty The Hot Touches album features eight original songs, each written by talented singer/song writer Colm O'Mahony. “[The album] explores issues such as love, loss, betrayal and defiance. The exploration of these topics and the wide ranging impacts they can have
on our lives is what made rock music so powerful in the first place, and this album proves that it still has the power to perforate and infiltrate our heavily guarded senses,” said the Woodlawn singer. To celebrate the launch, music fans will be able to download the entire album

Gavin James to play historic ’drive-in’ concerts in August People in favour of retaining two metre social distancing | By Sean Moriarty The majority of Killarney people are not in favour of reducing the current two-metre, social distancing rule to one-metre a Killarney Advertiser poll has revealed. Nearly 1,000 readers of the town’s longest serving news weekly took part in a social media poll this week. Of the 911 people that voted, 574 of them said keep the current regulation as it stands. A further 337 were opposed to idea and want the distancing to be reduced to one metre. Several people commented on the Facebook poll with the vast majority of commenters supporting the two-metre rule. “Stick with the guidance of Dr. Holohan. If he says two metres, then follow his rules! Simple.! He’s the expert in this-we are not,” posted Maeve Foley. Tralee clothes shop owner Danny Leane
said: “Two meters will be staying in my boutique on Monday regardless of what any politician will say.” While Neil Kelly added: “Even if the distance is reduced to one metre in the near future, keeping a two metre distance (especially in busy areas) would remain a safer approach.” Others were concerned about the way some people were disregarding the rules. “People climb on top of you to get to items on shelves,” said Joan Keating. “Stick with the two metres until the advice changes from the medical experts who have got us this far,” said Maureen Collier, while Kathleen Fitzgerald added: “If it's working why change it.” With the current 5km travel restriction set to lift on Monday, many Killarney people are looking forward to visiting family and friends. Turn to page 26 and 27 to see what plans local people have in place from Monday.

BACK IN TIME: Courtney’s Bar on Plunkett St might be closed but the off licence section has returned. Photo: Grigoriy Geniyevskiy
Courtney’s bar goes back to the future | By Grigoriy Geniyevskiy One of Killarney’s oldest pubs is reinventing itself in an effort to survive the current pandemic. Courtney's Bar on Plunkett St has been operating as pub since the late 1800s and remains in the ownership of the Courtney family since that time.
The classic and much photographed frontage is now a protected structure while the bare wood interior retains the ‘old world’ atmosphere of the a traditional Irish pub. Like every pub in town, it has been closed since March 16 but took a step back in time recently in an effort to trade out of the current crisis.
Second university site proposed for Killarney | By Sean Moriarty A second proposal aimed at attracting a sub-campus of the newly formed Munster Technological University to Killarney has been put forward. Last month it was announced that Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) and Institute of Technology Tralee (ITT) would merge to create MTU. It was revealed in last week’s Killarney Advertiser that Killarney Mayor Michael Gleeson was pushing for the old St Finan’s Hospital site to be considered as one of six campuses for the new university. Since then a second proposal, this time involving the old Pretty Polly Factory site, has been out forward. Former councillor Sean Counihan has suggested the site which is owned by Kerry County Council and has been lying unused for years. It was previously owned by the former Killarney Town Council but when town
councils were amalgamated in to the county council's ownership transferred to the main council. According to Counihan the site, at the time it was in town council ownership, was designated for use “by the people of Killarney” and that it was earmarked for education purposes and could have been used as a catering college. He believes that the process of returning the Pretty Polly site to Killarney ownership would involve a lot less red-tape than the potential purchase of the St Finan’s site. “I would argue that if the municipal system has any relevant authority in the Killarney area it would be in a position to offer, free gratis, this site for the benefit of the town and indeed for North Cork East / South Kerry and beyond,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “This would remove the interactions between any other proposed sites such as St Finan’s where progress would be much slower and complicated when dealing with bodies like the HSE.”
Between 1977 and 1986 Courtney's operated as an Off-Licence and is reverting back to the same until the bar can freely open again. “Changing to an off licence allows us to open our doors and it’s great to have the door open. We will be reverting back to a normal bar as soon as we're allowed. As it stands that is around August 10, hope-
fully it would be sooner,” manager Brian Murphy told the Killarney Advertiser. “I’ve been here 20 years managing the bar and have never seen anything like this. I do miss the atmosphere of the bar. The chat with the locals and tourists. It’s a completely different vibe.” Courtney’s is open from Wednesday to Saturday from 2pm to 8pm.
Killarney club ready and waiting for permit to play again | By Sean Moriarty Dr Crokes GAA club says it is does not envisage a return to training in small groups until the end of June at the earliest. The Killarney club is monitoring the government road map to re-open the country. Further relaxing of restrictions is expected on Monday of this week, when GAA pitches can reopen for walking and oth-
er non-contact exercise. However, the opening of any pitch will rely on further directives from the GAA headquarters in Croke Park. “We do not envisage a return to training in small groups in Phase Two and pitches and playing areas are to remain closed. However, as per the government roadmap, this may be reviewed in Phase Three,” a club statement said. Phase Three of the reopening plan is due to be implemented on June 29.

Officials in yellow jackets are not popular at this time Surely this is no time for handing out parking fines in near-empty car parks and deserted streets? This is not to take aim at the individual parking attendants who do a difficult and unpopular job in normal times, and are now simply acting on instructions from higher up. Gardai are also involved in enforcing the traffic regulations. Traffic wardens have been brought back on duty in deserted streets by the council bosses, before the beach guards on crowded beaches. No money in beach guarding, one supposes. I know from the few shops that are open and from meeting motorists who are in dismay at €40 fines in
these very stressful days. The policy of handing out fines is more unpopular now than ever. And on that note, I believe this COVID-19 has led a parade of yellow jackets - these days of an over-staffed State sector. Almost every day now either in Muckross or Fossa there is a yellow speed van; then there is a yellow garda
Make the Glebe into a town square There seems to me to be an obvious solution to get around the current ban on drinking pints 100 metres from the point of sale: Cover over the Glebe Car Park in umbrellas and shades and let the pubs of the town commandeer hexagonal long tables there. You see this everywhere in France: town squares used by restaurants and bars.
Waiters from bars in Plunkett Street, College Street, and High Street, can deliver the texted orders for drinks and food and the 100 metres restriction is overcome. Or people can queue up at the door and take the drink back to their table. And the oxymoron of ‘social distancing’ from groups or pods (as if we were all whales or dolphins) will be more than met too.
checkpoint and if that is not enough there is the threat of parking fine from yellow jackets in the near empty town… Then if you take the bike the wrong way around Muckross House a ranger in a yellow jacket can, potentially, jump out of the bushes. This is huge visibility by the State’s strong hand in their gilet jaunes! We should not feel we live in a police state because of a virus that is all but gone from Kerry. We are all under awful stress. The last thing we need is to be shaken down again and again by people far more powerful than us. I think I have been turned off the colour yellow.
We all need to think outside the box. Right now, according to Garda advice to the IHF locally, hotels/pubs may deliver alcohol to consumers for consumption at home once the sale takes place at the licenced premises like by phone or online. People may also attend the premises and collect the alcohol as a takeaway. ‘Consumption of alcohol within 100 metres of the pub is not permitted,’ is the key line for me. The person delivering is not entitled to take further orders for the return journey. Them’s the rules. In Killarney, we need to find a way around them if we are to return to any semblance of normality. Portable loos that are self-cleaning will need to be provided by the council at the four corners of the Glebe too.
Less American news – more European on our tellies Could we please have less news from the USA? I am tired of the failure America is. I am tired of its riots and its attacks on the press and free speech and trammelling of basic human rights – the very things that once made it such a world leader. And I am tired of its interference with the Middle East and the Far East for that matter and then leaving the problem for Europe to sort out. I have secretly harboured reservations over Killarney’s waving of American flags and plastering the town with Uncle Sams for the 4th of July Festival. I don’t think America is great and I do not admire their treatment of the weak, the sick and the vulnerable. Or the way they must consume so much of the planet resources. And I don’t think it started with Trump. We have become too like them in our 24/7 society; bringing in immigrants for cheap labour without proper housing or education facilities; privatisation of basic services like childcare and elder care and basic health care. Their expensive education has something of the conveyor belt about it. We should be looking more to the European socialist model in this country and forget about the extreme global capital culture that is destroying itself and the planet. Less of Trump and more of Macron and Merkel on our televisions please.

TAKE OFF: Ryanair is ready to return to Kerry Airport but the isolation rule is causing confusion for passengers. Photo Kerry Airport
Confusion over airline passengers isolation rules There is still large scale uncertainty regarding the two-isolation ruling for airline passenger arriving in Ireland.
| By Sean Moriarty Ryanair is due to start flying to and from Kerry Airport on July 1 and while the airline will operate a reduced service in terms of frequency the move is seen locally as a potential to re-start the flailing tourism industry. Last week, the Killarney Advertiser reported on how the airline and passengers were seeking clarity on regulations imposed by the Irish and UK governments which state that passengers must self-isolate for two-weeks once they arrive in this country. Ryanair serves Britain and Germany from
Kerry Airport but there are different regulations attached to each country. Passengers arriving from Britain do not need to isolate for two weeks as they are covered by a long-standing common travel agreement between the two countries. It is one of the reasons passengers arriving in Luton or Stansted go through different passport controls if their flight originated in Kerry. German passengers are free to travel anywhere in continental Europe as they are covered by the Schengen travel agreement. It is law that every passenger arriving in Ireland must fill out a locator form and are
‘requested’ to self-isolate for 14 days. Therein lies the confusion. “In terms of the law, people must fill in the form and state where they are staying, or if they move from that location, they must inform the authorities, after that the law states that the cannot travel outside the 5km or 20km restriction, or whatever the case me be at the time. But there is nothing to stop a person arriving to Kerry Airport with the correct paperwork and heading to their home in Killarney or wherever, and going where they like, within the 5k or 20k limit, after that. Kerry-Dublin flight cost €8k per passenger during crisis It has emerged that the Government has paid a subsidy of more than €8,000 for each passenger return journey in a bid to keep air routes operational between Donegal and Kerry airports and Dublin throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. The State subsidy in place throughout April for the Donegal-Dublin and Kerry-Dublin routes is now 4,000 % greater per passenger return journey compared to the actual airfare involved, the Irish Independent reported on Thursday this week. Operated by Stobart Air on behalf of Aer Lingus, the Kerry Dublin service continued to operate throughout the emergency despite a massive fall in passenger numbers
Motor club's cancer fundraiser drive | By Sean Moriarty Members of Killarney and District Motor Club raised €1,300 for Kerry Cancer Support Group. The funds were raised at one of the last autocross events organised by the club before COVID-19 restrictions took hold. As a result of those restrictions members were unable to present the proceeds until late last week when the event’s clerk of the course Martin Farrell and deputy clerk of course Diarmuid Lynch were finally able to get to the Kerry Cancer Support Group Tralee
headquarters. “The idea behind the event was first raised by Diarmuid. His daughter depended on the bus service provided by the Support Group and he presented an idea at a club meeting that was backed by the entire club,” Martin told the Killarney Advertiser. “Diarmuid has run a load of events for Kerry Cancer Support Group and this was another one of his ideas that worked and took off.” Spectators attending the club’s autocross event paid an admission fee – usually entry is free – and the gate money was presented to Kerry Cancer Support Group last Friday.

Serums ingredients and benefits Ingredients in serums range from the ordinary to the science based depending on what you're going for. Here are a few common ones to watch out for.
other active ingredients.
1. Vitamin C It is a common ingredient for anti-ageing, so if you're in your late 30s and 40s, use a serum with this. Not only does this potent component build collagen, it also boosts skin immunity and should be a part of on a regular basis.
5. Plant-based active ingredients like liquorice make for natural brightening ingredients and are just right to deal with those pesky sunspots and scars, as well as patchy skin.
2. Hyaluronic acids Are a great way to treat dehydrated skin, without the heaviness of creams and emollients. These trap in the skin's natural water levels, and make sure that it doesn't lose any of its natural moisture, remaining replenished. Ceramides and amino acids also achieve the same results and benefits. 3. Antioxidants are essential to protect the skin from stress and environmental damage. So beta-carotene and green tea are extracts to watch out for, while berries, pomegranate and grape seed extract are
4. Retinols are serum ingredients ideal for skins that are prone to acne, while also addressing fine lines and wrinkles.
6. Anti-inflammatory If you have sensitive skin, use a serum with anti-inflammatory properties, preventing redness, breakouts and inflammation. The ingredients to read on the label you need to check out are zinc, arnica and aloe vera. I always recommend you use a serum under moisturiser for extra added benefits, as they start working on the basal layer of your skin. Drink 8 glasses of water a day , 8 hrs sleep every night to get the skin working at its best. For a free skin consultation, or if you have any questions, call Jill 064 6632966.

Michael Jordan article is a slam dunk online | By Sean Moriarty The Killarney Advertiser scored a huge hit online last week with Sports Editor Adam Moynihan’s article ‘The Day Michael Jordan Came to Town’.
FIRST AID: Selina Looney with her three sons, Sean (7), Noah (3) and Theo (1).
First aid expert saves her infant son’s life A Killarney mother has described how her first aid training saved her son’s life. | By Sean Moriarty Selina Looney is a post and pre-natal expert and runs the local Mama Movement, an organisation that provides health support to recent and expecting mothers. Her one-year-old Theo Ashe began choking last Thursday at their Castle Park home. Selina’s experience is first aid was the key to his survival. “Instinct, memory and adrenaline took over and I swiftly turned him over, delivering back slaps in an attempt to dislodge what he was choking on, flipping him over and checking and back to deliver more back slaps, while making my way to the front door to call for help from the neighbours,” she told the Killarney Advertiser.
It was the second time she had to use her skills to save one of her three sons. Less than three years ago her middle son Noah, who was only eight months old at the time, bagan choking while on a family holiday in Spain. The horrors of the previous incident came rushing back last Thursday. “In that moment all I could hear were my own thoughts, screaming, no, no, no, not again and for a split second I was paralysed by fear,” she added. “Fear that I couldn’t save him and fear that this time my baby would die.” She is encouraging local mothers to take First Aid classes and will run an on-line course via her website www. themamamovement.ie. The next course is scheduled for June 29 and can be booked via the website.
Killarney cemetery to get a Columbarium wall | By Sean Moriarty Plans for a Columbarium wall at the newly constructed Cemetery in Knockeenduff, will go ahead despite concerns that Kerry Council may a face budget shortfall as a result of the pandemic. A recent web-based meeting between elected council officers and senior management confirmed that the pro-
ject will go ahead. Killarney councillor Brendan Cronin has been a long-time advocate of the project and he sought clarification for Council Chief Executive Moira Murrell on a previous commitment given by the council for the construction of a Columbarium wall. Ms Morrell confirmed to the meeting that the construction of the wall in the Killarney was going ahead and Cllr Cronin welcomed the news.

The superb article captures NBA superstar Michael Jordan’s time in Kerry with the late great Paudie O’Connor and his entourage in 1999 just after the 1998 NBA season featured in the Netflix hit ‘The Last Dance’. The online debate took a humorous turn as locals and readers from all over Ireland
highlighted that Jordan was drinking Guinness from a Heineken glass. To date no Killarney barman has taken responsibility. Friars take lily blessing ceremony on-line | By Sean Moriarty Current health restrictions won’t stop the Franciscans from celebrating the feast of St Anthony and the blessings of lilies next week. However the three day religious festival, known as the St Anthony Triduum, will move on-line to comply with social distancing regulations. The feast of St Anthony – the patron saint of small requests and the finder of lost things – is important date in the Franciscan calendar. St Anthony’s Day is traditionally celebrated on June 13 and the days leading
up to it are a time of daily masses and evening novenas. It usually ends with a special mass where parishioners bring lilies to be blessed as part of a tradition that goes back hundreds of years. The lily blessing ceremony is always one of the best attended masses in the Friary every year, surpassed only by Christmas and Easter ceremonies and the feast of St Francis, during which animals and pets are blessed. Masses will be broadcast daily 11.15 am via the Killarney Franciscans Facebook page. On Saturday June 13, people can hold a lily in their hands during the ceremony and have them blessed on-line.

Tributes to showband legend Brendan Boyer | By Sean Moriarty The Gleneagle Hotel has led local tributes to the internationally acclaimed Irish performer, Brendan Bowyer, who has passed away at the age of 81.
TRIBUTES: Ireland's answer to Elvis, Brendan Boyer, passed away last week. He was a legend of the showband era
Listry GAA rocked by double tragedy as it raised cancer funds | By Sean Moriarty Listry GAA club overcame two tragedies as it raised over €13,000 for two local cancer support charities. Over the Bank Holiday weekend the club ran 48-hour online relay race in aid of the Kerry Cancer Support Group and the Kerry Hospice Foundation. Each member of the club and their families (as well as overseas members) was invited to walk or run for 45 minutes over the weekend. Their efforts were be recorded and collated on social media to create a continuous 48-hour relay. Participants included club members and their families as well as overseas members who took park in the on-line event in
places like America and Britain. Despite being struck by two tragedies in the run up to the event the club pressed on with the relay race and raised €13,000 which will be divided equally between the two charities. Club member (and one of the chief organisers of the relay race) Fergus lost his brother Barry on the Wednesday leading up the event. Barry was a stalwart of the South Kerry GAA scene and his passing shocked both the local and county sporing and wider community. A second club member, Brendan Tagney, died tragically the same week and while both deaths shocked the club to its very core they carried on with the relay race. “It just shows how the community can come together,” organiser Anthony Kennedy told the Killarney Advertiser.
A native of Waterford, Brendan lived and spent most of his career in Las Vegas, but never forgot his Irish roots. For over six decades Brendan enthralled audiences around the world. The title of Ireland’s answer to Elvis Presley rested easily on his shoulders. “We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Brendan Bowyer. His performances at The Gleneagle down through the years were nothing short of legendary. He was one of the kings of the Showband era both at home in Ireland and abroad. Our sincerest condolences to his wife Stella, his family and his many
friends. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis,” said Patrick O’Donoghue, CEO of The Gleneagle Group. He burst onto the scene in the late 1950’s as a member of The Royal Showband with whom he performed what many consider his signature tune The Hucklebuck. The Dancehall genre of music was at its height and packed out venues the length and breadth of the country throughout the 1960’s. His move to Las Vegas in the early 1970’s was the stepping stone to international stardom with the Big 8 Showband which he formed with the late Tom Dunphy. He readily sold out venues in his adopted city and rubbed shoulders with the iconic performers of the time. He made many trips back to Ireland for performances over the following 40 years and was made a freeman of Waterford City.
Civic Amenity sites to reopen Kerry County Council will re-open Civic Amenity sites on Monday The Civic Amenity sites in Kerry had reopened on a phased basis since Monday, May 18 but were only accepting domestic black bag waste and recycling at the depots as well as cardboard and glass and cans at Bottle Banks. However, in line with the Roadmap for Reopening Society & Business and having assessed the lifting of the travel limit from 5km to 20km, as well as activity levels, it is intended that the Civic Amenity Centres will resume normal activities next Monday June 8th. This includes accepting trailers as well as Waste Electrical and Scrap Metal at Civic Amenity sites in addition to the domestic waste and recyclables outlined above. Customers will continue to be advised that delays may be experienced to en-
sure that social distancing is maintained on all sites. The current queue system in place for customers to enter the sites will remain in place with ground markings at 2m intervals. Traffic Management arrangements will remain in place as well. Given the likely customer numbers presenting at sites on restoration to full service, all sites will open for full days on Monday and Thursday of next week to ensure social distancing can be maintained. This includes the Civic Amenity Sites in Cahirciveen and Dingle which would normally be closed on a Monday. These sites will also remain open on Thursday afternoon. The proposed Phased restoration of services above will be kept under regular review and may be adjusted subject to any Government/Public Health advice and guidance as we move forward.

5.6.2020 Killarney Advertiser's Grigoriy Geniyevskiy was out and about this week chatting to locals and getting their reaction as life edges slowly back towards normality
LORNA ROCHE AND KAYLEIGH ROCHE
Don’t think we’ll be travelling as there’s enough in Killarney and there’s plenty to do here. It would be good if certain business opened as long as they follow the rules and regulations. We think that reducing the social distance from 2m to 1m should be fine. It’s definitely gotten busier in Killarney. We think it won’t go back to the way it was until we get a vaccine. Some businesses will have to change, and it will take a while. Maybe over time it will get back to normal and things will be relaxed. There is a real sense of community in Killarney and we do appreciate being able to see our friends and family more.
It's reassuring to see that it is improving. The 2m social distance should stay for the way it is for the time being. We don’t see problems in travelling as long as social distancing is kept. The town itself looks busier than it should be. People should adhere to the guidelines. And it should be back to normal. We’re hopeful about it.

I'll feel comfortable travelling once the restrictions are lifted from 5km to 20km. The town is still very quiet but there have been more local people around. I think the social distance should be reduced to 1m. Some shops should be opened as well as long as they follow by the rules and regulations. I don’t think it will be back to normal in a long time but Killarney is slowly opening back up. The weather has made it that bit easier for us and we have plenty of space with the park.
I won’t be travelling, no. 2m social distancing is good but some places like indoors should be reduced to at least 1.5m. Killarney is a bit eerie in some places. It’s quiet and because of that, the traffic sometimes goes too quickly down by the Cathedral and that’s dangerous. There have also been more bikes around with no bells too. I feel some shops should be opened but there would have to be regulations.
I would like to see it more open, as long as everyone keeps in mind social distancing. It’s hard to visit other towns. I’d like to see the Aran Islands but can’t at the moment. I’m originally from Arizona but I’ve been coming to Ireland since 1981. Ireland is doing so well and Varadkar is doing the right thing being very cautious.
SIOBHAN KELLY AND LORNA O’SHEA
We will feel comfortable travelling once the restrictions are changed. There will be a bit more freedom. The 2m social distancing should be lowered but at a slower pace. It's still dead out. People are just out for walks. More coffee shops could be opened for a bit of life in the town. We're missing the life before but we are getting used to it.
PAM O’BRIEN AND COLM O’BRIEN
It seems to be busy but there is nowhere to go bar the national park. Leave the social distance to 2m. Relax the restrictions slowly. At least with the 5km its better and we can check on the parents. Hopefully it will go back to normal, but it might take a while. Colm (who is a pupil of St Oliver’s) is also missing his friends.

In town the activity has picked up. We still are very compliant locally. I would feel comfortable travelling once it is 20km. There is a sense that we need to get a new normal. The foreseeable future is going to be domestic tourism. There is a lot of preparation going to be involved in a lot of businesses that will be opening. Working from home will be more of a thing, but shouldn’t really affect Killarney as it's mostly Tourism here.
I would be comfortable travelling once the restrictions change from 5km to 20km. Once everyone is adhering to the regulations and respecting others, it shouldn’t be a problem. I think we're ok keeping the social distance at 2m for the moment.Killarney has picked up more and I’ve noticed more volumes of traffic and people. I think it would be ok to have some shops opened and it would be nice to have the cafes opened. If they open, I think we should be fine as long as we're adhering to the regulations and rules and it will be less limiting on people in general to just get a coffee or a snack. I think we can allow these small pleasures while still following the regulations. Thank you to all our frontline workers as well.
I would be comfortable travelling once the restrictions are lifted from 5km to 20km. I’m originally from Dublin. I’ve been in Killarney since January and it’s been very quiet. I think the social distance should be reduced to 1m as life has to go on. The numbers aren’t huge compared to other countries so we should be fine with 1m. Hopefully, it will eventually get better. It's important to focus on Mental Health - getting out more - and Killarney does have the space for it.
AIDAN CASEY AND TARA CASEY
KATHLEEN CORCORAN
We would travel to the family but would not be comfortable on public transport. It can be hard with kids and some people aren’t listening, but we think it should go down from 2m of social distancing. It's still very quiet and only the essential shops are open. It’ll take a long time before it comes back to the way it was.
If the regulations and rules change, I’d go to Tralee please God, hopefully to visit relatives and friends. Wouldn’t want too many people on the bus though. Should be fine if people follow the rules and regulations of social distancing. It should come back to normal and the way it was before.

I probably will be travelling more as the restrictions get lifted. I think the 2m social distance should be kept for another while. Killarney is still quiet. I haven’t seen many people around. It will take a while to get back to the way it was - at least 3 years. I miss the atmosphere of the town and just meeting friends. Maybe some small shops should open as long as they follow the guidelines.
I would be comfortable travelling and I will be able to visit my family once the 20km regulation is in place. I think the 2m social distance should be kept at the moment, have more precaution about it. I work in the National Park and I’ve noticed a lot more locals using the park. We're very lucky to have all this. Shame to see it so quiet and I miss the atmosphere. Some of the freedoms are gone.
Travelling should be ok and I’m comfortable with it as long as people abide by the social distancing. My family are in Dingle, so I just want to see them. Hopefully, it will be back to the way it was by next year. We are slowly getting there.

Conor Marcus ‘No More Broken Hearts’ If you haven’t heard of Conor Marcus, then you should have. The 15-year-old singer/songwriter from County Down is on a fast-track to stardom. It is a pure rags to riches story, starting out busking on the streets of Dublin and Belfast before competing on the ‘The Voice UK Kids’ last year. His debut LP, ‘Maybe Sometime Soon’ which he released late last year, marked him out as something special.
The centenary of the Irish Free State is just over a year away – January 22, 2022 to be precise - so we can expect the world of books to celebrate this historic milestone. Fast off the mark was author and journalist Valerie Cox who has collated the memories of Irish people who were born between 1921 and 1925. ‘Growing up with Ireland” recalls events like the big snow of 1932, to Eamon de Valera speaking to crowds in a rural town square, to living by gaslight and trips to the seaside on the crossbar of Daddy's bike to pick cockles for Mammy, the stories reflect both a simpler time and a tougher one, where childhood was short and the world of work beckoned from an early age. Stories of the scourge of TB, childbirth in an earlier era, hiding out in Santry Woods, when the Black and Tans raided, and pride in a father who was interned in Frongach, Wales
Conor began learning piano at the age of four. By nine he had written his first song and then went on to teach himself how to play the guitar to accompany his songs. ‘No More Broken Hearts’ is the latest single from that EP – released towards the end of May – about people who have lost someone close to them, and is fitting for the current times.

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword RTE 1; Saturday 21.45 King Arthur: Legend of the Sword is a 2017 epic fantasy action adventure film directed by Guy Ritchie. The film stars Charlie Hunnam as the title character and Jude Law as the tyrannical king Vortigern who is attempting to kill him. 24 million fewer pints cosumed in Ireland New figures have revealed that alcohol consumption has fallen in Ireland as a result of Covid-19 restrictions and the closure of the on-trade, with the total volume of sales down by 35.6% in April 2020 compared to April 2019. The Nielsen data, released by Drinks
Trump CORNER
Ireland, provides figures on the sale of beer and cider (Long Alcoholic Drinks) and spirits in Ireland, in both the on and off-trade. They show that alcohol sales increased in the off-trade in April, but overall, the closure of the on-trade resulted in a fall in the total amount of alcohol con-
sumed in Ireland. Looking at beer and cider, the data shows that 24 million fewer pints were consumed in Ireland in April 2020, compared to April 2019. There was a 58% increase in the volume of beer and cider sold in the off-trade, but overall sales of beer and cider fell by 36% due to pubs being closed. It’s estimated that generally around 60% of beer and cider sales are in the on-trade. The numbers on the sale of spirits show a similar trend, with 4.9 million fewer 35.5ml serves of spirits sold in April 2020 compared to the previous year. There was a 24% increase in the volume of off-trade sales, but a 13% overall decrease in the volume of spirits sold in Ireland. According to Drinks Ireland, the Covid-19 pandemic has significantly impacted Ireland’s drinks industry, with the closure of the on-trade and restrictions in supply to many off-trade channels, not just here in Ireland, but across global markets, imposing commercial pressure on producers. In addition, the closure of brewery and distillery visitor centres, which usually attract 3 million people, mainly overseas visitors, has severely impacted jobs and revenue. “There has been a perception that people are drinking more as a result of the Covid-19 restrictions, but these figures clearly show that this is not the case, with overall sales down by just under 36%,” said Patricia Callan, Director of Drinks Ireland. “With pubs, restaurants and hotels closed and Government restrictions in place, there’s been not only a fall in the amount of alcohol consumed, but changes in the way people drink.
Timing running out to make America great again It is just over 150 days to the US presidential election. Time is running out for Mr Trump to make America great but don’t ever bet against him. Right now the USA is on the brink of martial law and not far off civil war. Civil unrest is an all-time high and racial protests dominate the headlines and the streets.
The Coronavirus has wiped out over 100,000 of its citizens and forced millions more to seek unemployment benefit. To say that Trump is under pressure would be a fair assumption right now. The thing is, he is not. He is has already survived an impeachment trial, slipped out of a rape allegation and slandered just about anybody that disagrees with
Killarney MEP Kelly urges UK- EU to put citizens first Sean Kelly, the local elected member of the European Parliament has warned that a no deal Brexit and the fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic will have serious effects unless negotiations on both sides put people first. “The best interests of citizens and businesses must be put to the fore of EUUK negotiations on a future relationship, especially given the disappointing lack of progress so far and the damage a no-deal outcome would cause coupled with the anticipated economic impact of the coronavirus crisis”, Seán Kelly MEP and Leader of Fine Gael in the EU Parliament said as the fourth round of talks between the EU and UK negotiating teams continued until today (Friday). “This is not a time to be reckless with people’s futures and our citizens are depending on their elected representatives to take responsible decisions and pursue their mandate in the best interests of everyone,” he added. The Fine Gael MEP also welcomed the Stormont Assembly's first chance to debate Brexit on Tuesday, and recognises that a majority of its members voted to call for an extension to the transition period.

The Irish Coast Guard’s Shannon-based rescue helicopter was on exclusive standby, all other operations in this part of the country were being handled by Sligo.
The Passport Office is currently not accepting any applications for passport renewals as public offices and phone lines are closed until further notice. The ITAA are calling on the Department of Foreign Affairs to reopen the passport office with immediate effect. Passport applications and renewals can still be made through Passport Online and requests will be processed when the service resumes, however the Department of Foreign Affairs has advised against posting supporting documents to Embassies and Consulates at this time. A web chat service will be made available to those who need a passport for travel in a genuine emergency; however it is unclear how long this process will take. ITAA CEO Pat Dawson said, “The ITAA is asking for clarification from the Department of Foreign Affairs on this issue, because we want to do what is best for our customers during this extremely stressful time. This delay in passport renewals will further hurt our industry, as customers who want to book holidays after the
The spacecraft blasted off from the Kennedy Space Centre in Florida last Saturday evening at 8.33pm Irish time in what was the first launch from the United States of astronauts to the International Space Station since 2011. NASA astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley could be heard saying “Copy Shannon” as the space craft made its second pass of planet earth around 10pm – by that time the mission was on course for a successful meeting with the International Space Station – and local emergency services were stood down.
The cost of the crisis in a nutshell The Exchequer recorded a deficit of €6,143 million to end-May. This compares to a deficit of €63 million in the same period last year. The €6,080 million year-on-year deterioration in the Exchequer balance is primarily driven by increases in capital expenditure.
quarantine is lifted will be forced to wait for their passport application to be approved. The system will be overwhelmed by the backlog in passport renewals and applications, and this will drastically slow the recovery of the travel sector both at home and abroad.” ITAA CEO Pat Dawson said. “Unless a person is considered to be in an emergency situation, their right to leave the country is invalidated should they not be in possession of a valid passport. We have been engaging with the Department on these matters since the beginning of the pandemic in Ireland, and it is vital that these communications continue so that we can keep our customers safe and informed of their options now and over the coming weeks and months.” The ITAA is asking the Department of Foreign Affairs to issue clear and concise guidelines on travel restrictions for Irish travellers as soon as possible. The Association is also concerned that airlines such as Aer Lingus and Ryanair are planning on operating flights from the 1st of July, in spite of current travel advice issued by the Department of Foreign Affairs. The ITAA has advised that consumers adhere to the current travel guidelines from the Department, which state that Non-Essential Travel should be avoided until further notice.
Tax receipts for the month of May amounted to €6,218 million; an increase of 1.3 per cent on May 2019. The aggregate outturn reflects a steep decline in excise and VAT receipts, but offset by strong corporation taxes and greater than expected income taxes. Corporation tax receipts were €1,224
million higher than May last year. Information from the Revenue Commissioners is that these payments are based on increased profitability and not one-off factors; a significant part of the May corporate tax take is due to economic activity last year. So far, income tax receipts have also
proven more resilient to the broader economic shock, falling by 7.8 per cent year on year, or €137 million. “Today’s figures show that the expected steep decline in consumption taxes has been offset by a rise in corporation taxes and relatively resilient income taxes,” said Minister for Finance and Public Expenditure and Reform, Paschal Donohoe T.D. on Wednesday, the day the extended version of this report was published.

Frozen in limbo? Some straight advice So you aren’t sure what to do right now? No sure if you are ready to get back to the gym, not sure what you should be doing or shouldn’t be doing? If you are like most people I’ve talked with, your lack of knowing “what to do” goes well beyond your health and fitness experience in or out of the gym. Nobody knows who to trust right now, so give yourself a break for being a thoughtful person in modern times. But, when you are bombarded with mixed messages and mixed emotions, it can help to check in with your gut. I’m going to offer some advice I’ve garnered from Tim Ferris: Ask yourself, “How am I feeling about this in my gut?” Then ask yourself, “How am I feeling about this in my head?” And finally, “How am I feeling about this in my heart?” If you’ve ever done a guided meditation, this is the equivalent of doing a body scan. Only we are tying an emotional and intellectual feeling in your head to those sensational feelings in your body.
If you have a full on “yes” from all three areas in your body, you can consider yourself to be in alignment with your decision. If any of the three areas is a “no”, consider yourself out of alignment and start focusing on a new path. Maybe that path is continuing to exercise at home. Maybe it’s focusing on making better nutrition choices. Maybe it’s focusing on journaling or meditation so that you can wrap your head around these stressors that have suddenly been thrust upon us. The point is, your health and fitness can’t be put on hold. Your body and mind is the only thing you take into this world, and the only thing you’re left with at the end. Our bodies are built on the constant pendulum swing of stress and recovery. Stress builds the body and mind by pushing us beyond our previous “limits”. Recovery allows us to repair those microtears and build back stronger than before. It goes without saying that the more you push one aspect the more you need the other. But there is also a necessary minimum that we all need.

Brennan brothers' new RTE TV series open for applications As the Irish hospitality industry gets ready to reopen on July 20, renowned hoteliers Francis and John Brennan are looking for the owners of large three or four star hotels or tourist attractions to take part in a new series of At Your Service which is currently in development for RTÉ. “We’re all facing huge challenges as we plan to welcome guests back into our hotels next month. John and I would really like to help other hoteliers navigate this process and help them future proof their business,” said Francis. “The hospitality industry continues to suffer more than most due to this lockdown. We understand the pressure this has placed on so many businesses. But we believe this challenge can be a real
opportunity as more and more people are planning to holiday at home in Ireland this year. So, we’d like to join four owners of hotels or indeed tourist attractions on their journey into the ‘new normal’ over the coming months and hopefully help them reinvigorate their service,” added John. This new four part series is currently being developed by leading independent production company Waddell Media for RTÉ in 2021, but needs business owners to get in touch now to express their interest in taking part, so filming can be planned in the coming months. Owners of a large three or four star family hotels or tourist attraction in Ireland should contact Waddell Media’s Maggi Gibson or Gareth McGreevy via maggi@waddellmedia.com or gareth@ waddellmedia.com.

Ponds are excellent for diversifying the ecosystem of your garden, it will draw in many predators of midges, slugs and green fly. However, for many of us it can be difficult to decide what to plant. .. The first thing to consider is the soil. Just because there is a pond, the soil is not automatically moist! I know that probably sounds very basic, but I have a pond which is lined with a butyl liner. It overflows on one side, and not on the other – my levelling was obviously not well done! The side where it overflows is very wet, but clay soil, which makes it solid and unsuitable for anything at all. The other side is dry and sandy and only suitable for alpines – which sounds completely counter intuitive. But let’s assume you have reasonably well-drained moist soil. The first plants which come to mind would have to be hostas. Hostas have beautiful large leaves, in many types of variegation. There are white striped such as H. ‘Hanky Panky’, golden edged such as ‘Golden Tiara’ and narrow leaved ones, ‘Praying Hands’. One of my personal favourites is ‘One Man’s Treasure’, it has beautiful lime green large leaves, but it’s real treasure lies in it’s purple stems, which are quite
striking. Irises are another great option, especially the bearded varieties are very showy. They need to be divided regularly to remain healthy, and like a good deal of sunshine. Rodegersias are an ideal choice for poor soil, with large Horse Chestnut shaped leaves. The more common ones have white flowers, but there are also lovely dark foliaged varieties with pink flowers, such as ‘Chocolate Wings’. Darmera is another lovely choice, throwing up globes of pink flowers in March, before large round, structured leaves appear. It grows to about 2ft, and I cannot praise it highly enough! Tradescantia is a grass leaved plant, which spreads happily, flowering is shades of purple to white all summer long. In the pond itself, it is also important to grow plants, especially aerating plants. There are lots of marginal plants too, such as water mint, pond forget-me-nots and ranunculus. Many of these plants will need specific planting depths, so take care to read the label. Pond lillies need at least 60cm depth of water to thrive.

Electric Opel to make Kerry debut | By Sean Moriarty Ahern’s Garage in Castleisland is one of the first Opel dealers in the country to take delivery of the new Corsa E – the German brand’s first fully electric car. The sixth generation of the car is billed as “a milestone in Opel’s electrification offensive,” and it is no coincidence that the Corsa was the chosen model to make this breakthrough. The Corsa is one of the most successful Opel models in recent history with sales of around 14 million units in the last 37 years – the German brand is showing huge confidence in its electrification process by pinning its hopes to one of its most popular sellers.
The car is due in Castleisland this week or early next week, fitting as the family run garage is one of Ireland’s longest-serving Opel dealers. “The Corsa is a pillar of the brand,” Pat Ahern told the Killarney Advertiser. “It is the first battery-powered Opel and will appeal to those who are all for climate change – it produces zero emissions, but a fully charged car is capable of 238kms and with 136 horsepower it will be fairly zippy too.” Pat was hopeful the car would be on site by the time the Killarney Advertiser hit the shop-shelves but it certainly will be there in the next week. “Its arrival is imminent, we are just waiting for the distribution people to get fully back up to speed,” he added.

Motorcycle racer sets sights on prestigious British championship this year | By Sean Moriarty Killarney motorcycle racer Kevin Coyne has fast-tracked his plans to race in Britain as it becomes increasing unlikely that the sport will resume in Ireland this year. Last month, the Killarney Advertiser revealed that local motorcycle racers hoped to get back on track in July but that plan has hit a setback after officials from Mondello Park – the country’s only permanent race track – said that they would concentrate on resuming car racing at the venue at expense of motorcycle racing. “Mondello Park has taken the difficult decision to cancel all of the dates originally set for the 2020 Dunlop Masters Superbike Championship. Hopes remain that some Motorcycle races can be run at the track before the end of 2020 but any events that do run will not be on their original dates,” said Dunlop Masters Superbike Championship co-ordinator Fergus Brennan.
Coyne, 18, initially planned on contesting the full Irish series before heading to England for the later rounds of the British SuperBike series but following Mondello Park’s decision he will go there as soon as UK racing gets the green light. The BSB was due to release a revised calendar this week and once the dates are firmed up Coyne will race in the first Junior Supersport race that becomes available. “It is a toe in the water exercise,” his father Mark told the Killarney Advertiser. “I am watching the British Superbike website like a hawk this week and once we get dates we are ready to go. We only have a budget for the first two rounds so it is a case of wait and see what happens. We will be very happy with a top 20 result. The British Superbike Championship had not confirmed its calendar by the time the Killarney Advertiser went to press. “A new provisional Bennetts BSB cal-

All students you have seen the school experience change in an unprecedented way and for Leaving Certificate and Junior Certificate you have seen the exams plan and schedule turned completely on its head. This means keeping track of important updates, deadlines and dates over the next couple of months. Some schools will keep students informed on their websites and on their social media platforms. The best way to ensure you are keeping up to date is check official and reliable websites such as www.cao.ie. www.susi.ie. www.careersportal.ie and www.education.ie . It also a good idea to follow such sources on social media as well as any of the colleges that you are considering attending. Many of the colleges are hosting virtual Q and

Apprenticeship Applicants 2020 In normal circumstances, the minimum entry requirement for apprenticeships is to have achieved the Junior Cert/ Junior Cycle. This year instead of sitting the Junior Cycle examinations students will receive the a State Certificate of
completion of Junior Cycle in Autumn 2020, which will include the list of subjects, short courses and/or priority learning units, and the level the subjects were studied. Students will also receive a School Report setting out the learning achievements of students in Junior Cycle will also be included. This assessment of their learning will be provided by their teachers. This year, the 2020 State Certificate and the School Report will be deemed to be an ‘approved equivalent’ to the normal minimum eligibility criteria’ for craft apprenticeships. This arrangement only applies to learners who were due to complete the Junior Certificate/Cycle in 2020. It does not apply for learners who complete or completed the Junior Certificate/Cycle in any other year. Some apprenticeship employers may require a higher level of award than the Junior Cycle. Double delight for St Paul's basketball under 12 girls' team | By Eamon Keogh THE St. Pauls Killarney U-12 girls basketball team have created a significant bit of history after being crowned champions in both the Cork and Kerry 'A' leagues this season. The Killarney girls clinched the Kerry title in recent months and there was further good news this week when the Cork Ladies Basketball County Board decided to award league titles to the teams who were on top of their respective league tables. This is the first time in history a St. Pauls juvenile team has won the Cork league which makes it even more special for this young team, who have to ability to progress even further in the years ahead. The St. Paul's girls started off their campaign in the Kerry county league divi-
sion one with wins over tough opposition such as Tralee Imperials, St. Mary's Castleisland and Glenbeigh Flacons. They were crowned Kerry champions after some soild performances in the league and also secured the Kerry Cup title against a strong Tralee Imperials team. It was an extremely busy season for the young Killarney girls and the decision to participate in the Cork league also reaped rewards. The team enjoyed some really exciting games against some top teams from the Rebel county and a lot of the away games were played in the iconic Parochial Hall, Cork. St. Paul's registered significant victories over Carrigaline, Cobh, Glanmire, Waterford Wildcats and Limerick Celtics . They also played out a thrilling encounter against Mallow in Kilcummin Hall with the Killarney side eventually claiming the win after two periods of

young St. Paul's team . “The Last Dance” featuring NBA legend Michael Jordan is the global basketball story of the year but for this talented St. Pauls U-12 girls team, it is a season that may well be remembered as “The First Dance” in years to come if they continue to progress and deliver on their true potential.

Just 21 new cars were sold in County Kerry during the height of the Coronavirus pandemic. April was the worst month since records began, only six new cars were sold on the county at this time. This compares to 130 for the corresponding month last year. Even before restrictions were fully put in place on March 12 car sales were suffering in the county with 149 new registrations in Kerry compared to 337 in March 2019. Only 15 new cars were sold in May, against 90 last year. The Hyundai Tuscon remains the most popular car in the county with 85 version sold this year – surprisingly six more than for the same period last year. The Ford Focus (available at Killarney Autos) is the second most popular car in the county. So far this year 61 new Focus have been sold – just two less than last year. The Toyota Corolla (available from Bowlers Killarney) is in third place with 53 new cars hitting the road – five more than last year. ................................................................
Grants for public access Wi-Fi Ireland South MEP, Billy Kelleher is urging local authorities to make sure they apply for a €15,000 grant to fund the installation or upgrading of Wi-Fi in public spaces. The Fianna Fáil MEP was commenting as the next call for applications for the European Commission’s WiFi4EU scheme was launched in Brussels. Under the scheme, local authorities can secure vouchers of €15000 to fund new Wi-Fi hotspots or upgrade existing schemes. Across Europe, many public parks, libraries, health centres and other public spaces have secured access to high quality Wi-Fi access. “The voucher may be used to purchase new equipment or upgrade old systems and replace them with most recent and best available equipment on the market,” he said. “Additionally, tourists from outside the European Union in particular, cherish access to Wi-Fi so this makes sense from making our public spaces in our smaller towns attractive to these overseas visitors.”

OPINION Broadband blackspots leave us in the dark The Governor of New York, Andrew Cuomo, widely lauded for his leadership throughout this crisis, once described the Coronavirus as “the great equaliser”, suggesting that the effects of this disease are equally felt throughout society. The idea that Covid-19 has an identical impact on all of our lives is simply wrong. In the UK and US, minorities have died at the highest rates, internationally frontline workers have found themselves most likely to contract the virus and millions have lost their jobs. The Coronavirus did not only create new inequalities, it amplified existing societal problems. Ireland is not immune to this, but one
particular inequality between the haves and the have nots has deepened in this country - broadband. Living in a house where two of my brothers and myself were attempting to complete college exams online, my younger brother was endeavouring to finish third year online and my Dad was trying to work from home, I can attest to the short-comings of the national broad-

Our new columnist James Knoblauch gives his local spin on national issues
band plan. Although the issue may have passed from the lens of the national news, the inequality between rural and urban areas when it comes to connectivity has only been magnified. In 2017, a report by IBEC showed that when it came to access to high-speed broadband, Kerry had the 5th lowest rate in the country. By the end of 2019, 30% of premises in Kerry were still in areas that service providers had decided not to supply high-speed broadband to, with those living in the neglected areas i having to wait for state intervention. For comparison, 98% of premises in Dublin have access to high-speed broadband. Rural counties like Kerry have been forgotten. Amidst this crisis, the ability to access a stable internet connection is more important than ever. Is it fair that a student in Dublin can easily access their course material online, while students in rural Kerry struggle to do so?
Why should those working from home in Leinster have better working conditions than their counterparts in Munster? The honest answer is it is not right or fair. The national broadband plan was heralded by some politicians as being as significant as the rural electrification scheme of the 1950s and 60s that brought power and prosperity to rural Ireland. If this is true, then the failure of this plan to be extended to rural areas, such as those surrounding Killarney, represents continued disregard for rural Ireland. In 2020, internet is an essential service. When broadband blackspots in the Clydagh Valley or parts of Lough Guitane, Muckross and Glenflesk continue to exist, then these areas are being left behind. It is likely that even after this virus, many more people will be working and studying from home. It's high time politicians ensured no area is left in the dark.

In loving memory of my lovely son, Denis Casey, who died on 4th June 2019, Late of 109 Pinewood Estate, Killarney.
In loving memory of Denis Casey 109 Pinewood Estate, Killarney Who sadly passed away on 4th June
In loving memory of a special brother.
In loving memory of Denis Casey 109 Pinewood Estate, Killarney Who sadly passed away on 4th June
My heart has been left broken, Since the day you had to go, And the memories I treasure dearly, Are in the tears that still flow.
God saw you getting tired, And a cure was not to be, So he put his arms around you, And whispered “come to me”.
You’re in my thoughts every day, And that’s how it will always be, For you may be up in Heaven now, But you’ll always be with me.
With tearful eyes we watched you, We watched you fade away, Although we loved you deeply, We could not make you stay.
If only I could have the chance, To see your face once more, Or to hear your voice one final time, Just like it was before.
A golden heart stopped beating Hardworking hands at rest, God broke our hearts to prove to us, He only takes the best.
The day that Heaven calls for me, Will be a relief from all this pain, I’ll run to you with open arms, And we will meet again.
It’s lonesome here without you, We miss you more each day, Life doesn’t seem the same, Since you have gone away.
Always love you Denis, and never forgotten, from your broken-hearted mother. Forever loved and missed xxx
When days are sad and lonely, And everything goes wrong, We seem to hear you whisper, “Cheer Up and Carry On.”
1ST ANNIVERSARY CASEY
Each time we see your picture, You seem to smile and say, “Don’t cry, I’m in God’s Hands, We’ll meet again someday!” So Rest In Peace my lovely dad, And thanks for all you have done, I hope that God has given you, The crown you have truly won. Love from your daughter Charlotte and son in law Patrick xx

"It happens all the time"
In the wake of George Floyd’s tragic death at the hands of a Minneapolis police officer (and his colleagues), fires have raged across the Unites States and cries of injustice have been heard all around the world. Ireland is making noise too. Irish social media has been brimming with #blacklivesmatter posts this past week and a march in Dublin on Monday drew upwards of 4,000 protestors, all eager to show their support for the continually oppressed African-American community. It’s great to see such solidarity, but isn’t it
curious how we can be so loud when racism happens far away, yet so quiet when it happens nearby? This week I spoke to some black sportspeople who call, or have called, Killarney home. If you don’t want to believe that racism exists in this part of the world, you might want to look away now.
HURT
Ozzy de Quadros is a black, Brazilian-born tattoo artist who moved to Killarney 18 years ago. He quickly got involved with Killarney Athletic as a coach of an under-
age team and as a player at senior level. For Ozzy, racism has been a factor from the very start, both in and out of sport. “I’m here since 2002 and it happens all the time,” he explains. “And I come from South America where people always call each other names - it’s just their nature – so I didn’t grow up with this mentality that I get offended really easily. “I came here because I was going out with the mother of my children, who is Irish and white, and sometimes we would be out walking and we would both get abused. It was mostly older people, see-
In Part I of a three-part series on racism in Irish sport, Adam Moynihan speaks to some local black sportsmen about the discrimination they face both on and off the pitch ing a black guy with a white girl. I’m a grown man so I don’t get traumatised by these things but when it happens to kids, it’s not good for them.” It must hurt him on some level, though? “Oh, it does. It hurts. It’s not going to stop me living my life, but it hurts.” Ozzy, now 43 years of age, has also experienced racism in sporting contexts during his time in Ireland. In 2012, a troubling incident during a match against another local club was made even more distressing by the fact that he was with his two young sons at the time.
SPORT
5.6.2020 “Actually, I didn’t hear anything that day,” he says. “I was beside the pitch with my two kids. I was just supporting my club like everyone else there, but the [opposition player] didn’t want to see a black man shouting for Athletic. “One of the (Killarney Athletic) guys next to me said, ‘did you hear what he said to you?’. I said I didn’t. He said, ‘he called you a n*****’. “Some of the Athletic players (who had also heard the slur) told the referee but the referee didn’t want to do anything. He didn’t give him a red card. The club didn’t do anything. I posted on Facebook explaining what had happened and for a while people supported me. They said, ‘oh, that’s horrible’ and so on. But they didn’t go further than that. Nobody actually came to me and said ‘look, this is what you can do’. It never happened.” Ozzy says that instances of racial abuse are more frequent and more aggressive now than they were when he first arrived, a claim that is supported by figures from the Irish Network Against Racism which show that racist incidents doubled in the first quarter of this year alone. It’s a worrying trend, especially when one considers the fact that this country still doesn’t have proper laws to deal with hate crime. “There has definitely been an increase in verbal attacks,” Ozzy says. “In 2002, you knew that racist people weren’t going to talk to you or whatever, but they weren’t violent in the way they expressed their anger towards other ethnicities. Now, this could happen three, four, five times a night in a nightclub and nobody does anything. I don’t know where this hate is coming from.”

TRUMP
FRIENDS: Legion's Brian Okwute with teammates Peter and Eoghan O'Sullivan. Okwute has praised his clubmates for standing up for him when he was racially abused.
AN EVERYDAY REALITY
Coincidentally another black athlete, Brian Okwute, also came to Killarney in 2002, although he was just a baby at the time. Now a 19-year-old who studies business in IT Tralee, Okwute became the first ever black player to line out for the Killarney Legion seniors when he made his debut in the East Kerry League earlier this year. The son of a South African mother and a Nigerian father, Brian says that racism is an everyday reality for him and his family. “It’s something we just have to live with,” he says. “It happens often, especially on nights out. Sometimes you might hear, ‘you n*****’ out of nowhere. It’d be lads in their twenties or older. I’d say they’re drunk as well, but it’s still not acceptable. “One time I remember I was walking down through town with my friend and this guy just goes, ‘n*****’. I was like, ‘what?!’. We were so angry, we wanted to fight him, but we just walked away. What’s going to be your defence? He called you a ‘n******’ and nothing’s really going to happen to him, but you assault-

ed him? “It does bother me, and it bothers my friends. But you kind of get used to it.” Brian is a talented Gaelic footballer who played a starring role for the Legion minor team who won the County League Division 1 title last year. It’s a happy memory for the young midfielder, who says the club have welcomed him with open arms since he joined in 2015. Unfortunately, his time in the GAA hasn’t been all plain sailing. When he was 17, a minor match descended into a mass brawl when Brian was racially abused by an opponent. “It was one of those games,” he recalls. “It was tight and tensions were high. This guy pushed me, I pushed him back, he went for a swing and he missed, I went for a swing and I hit him. He was on the floor and the next thing you know he just said, ‘you black c***’. “To be fair, my teammates stood up for me and I was very happy about that. But I was honestly very hurt. I don’t understand why someone has to call me a ‘black c***’. Why can’t he just call me a ‘c***’?” Okwute received the full backing of his teammates and coaches in the wake of the incident but, even though the referee reported it, the player in question was not suspended. The player’s club attempted to set up a meeting so he could offer an apology but, upset with the fact that the perpetrator hadn’t been punished, Brian refused. “I didn’t want anything to do with it.” Sadly, Brian’s younger brother, Daniel, was also subjected to racist abuse while playing underage soccer for Killarney Celtic. The incident reduced the boy to tears. “If you’re black, you’ve definitely experienced racism at one point,” the elder Okwute says. “You kind of get used to it and brush it off like it never happened. You move on. But it’s not easy. I know I’m going to be racially abused at least once every year. Someone is going to say something to me.”
Ohio native Aaron Jackson played National League basketball for the Scotts Lakers last season and although he says he “felt more comfortable being black in Ireland than being black in America”, he was also racially abused during his time here. “I’m positive that my presence bothered certain people but it’s just more obvious in America, especially since Donald Trump has been elected,” Jackson says. “In Killarney, I can only remember one time that really stood out to me and was blatant racism. My teammate X (Xavier Talton, a fellow black player) and I were walking home one night from a pub and a car full of fellas were heckling us. They said, ‘n*****s, go back to where you came from’. “Personally, we brushed it off because we have probably heard it hundreds of times growing up in the States. It wasn’t until that night that it was solidified to me that racism lives everywhere. Although I felt hurt in the moment by it, I brushed it off because I met so many great Irish people who saw no colour at all.”
ANTI-RACIST
A quote attributed to political activist Angela Davis has gained a lot of traction this week: “it’s not enough to be non-racist, we must be anti-racist”. For their part, Ozzy and Brian echo these sentiments and say that white allies need to call out discrimination whenever they see it. Brian says he understands why some individuals don’t get involved, “but if that was your son, how would you feel? You have to put yourself in our shoes.” “It’s Ireland so everybody knows everybody,” Ozzy adds. “They’re afraid to offend the people they know, or get involved in a fight with someone, so they don’t stand up for those who are not from here. People are good but they don’t do enough. “The good thing is that there are a lot more nice people in Ireland than bad people. They just need to be more vocal when it comes to standing up for what they believe in. That’s all.”
UNTOLD STORIES
These are the accounts of just three people of colour who reside, or have resided, in our sleepy little town. There are many more untold black stories in Killarney alone and (if I can get up on my high horse about my hometown for a second) if it’s happening here, it’s happening everywhere. There is no question about that: racism exists in every town in every county in Ireland. At times in this country it seems as though we can only see issues like racism through a telescope. Despite our remote location, faraway problems are easy to find and explore and examine. Unfortunately, there’s one thing that telescopes are notoriously bad at. They can’t help us to see things that are right in front of our face.

BARRY CLIFFORD: Fossa GAA Club members were deeply saddened to hear of the sudden death of Barry Clifford. Barry is the brother of our Club Chairman, Dermot, and through that connection a wide number of Fossa people have befriended Barry over the last number of years. To make friend with Barry was easy, you were met with a wide smile, backed up with a genuine interest of what was happening which led to a very easy conversation. The large group from Fossa, young and old,

that travelled to Clonkeen to form a fitting guard of honour as Barry travelled home showed how he had made so many friends here. With regards to that fitting gathering in Clonkeen, I would like to say well done to the East Kerry Board and all others who participated in organising and marshalling it as well to all that turned out. An invite for Fossa underage several years ago, from Barry, to travel down to Sneem/Derrynane became a much looked forward to event for the youth and parents of the club. The welcome we received there is a testament to all that is good in the GAA. We further got to know Barry as Paudie, David and Shelly began to play through to adult football and he became a huge supporter of our own club, taking great pride in our victories as well as sharing in disappointment in our losses. To his wife Anne, sons Jim and Tom, his mother Breda, Dermot, Ellen, Paudie, David and Shelly here in Fossa, Seamus and family in Spa, Fergus and family in Listry, the Drummond family in Sneem and to all his friend we extend our sympathies and prayers. To the Derrynane club for the huge loss of a great clubman. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.
