Hit Apple TV show to feature bespoke Killarney product
Millions of eyes across the globe are set to see a unique Killarney product in a drama series which features top Hollywood actresses Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon. | By Michelle Crean Former 'Friends' star Aniston or even Witherspoon could plant their bum on a bespoke cushion which was handmade by Killarney business 'BabaBarock' located at The Reeks Gateway. So far the Season 2 official trailer for 'The Morning Show' on Apple TV+ has over five million views - but many more millions are watching the series - with all eyes set to see the product made by Karen Mahony in one of the later episodes. Karen, who admits to watching the series like a hawk to see her cushion, works alongside her husband Alex Ukolov and a

small team in the Baba Studio where they make bespoke products which are sold worldwide. And it's not only cushions they make but embroidered charms, pillows, jewellery, bags, purses and even Tarot cards. Each
item is carefully planned out, materials purchased and designs made for the final unique products. Karen said that a set designer from California made contact some time ago and purchased the item.
"It was just out of the blue," Karen told the Killarney Advertiser. "He must have seen it on our online shop. We were very surprised. We're hoping Jennifer Aniston sits on it or Reese Witherspoon, it's funny. It's a big show, a drama series about newscasters. He bought it and asked us to rush it out. I'm just waiting to see it." Karen, who attended the Royal College of Art in London, together with her husband Alex who trained at a well-known art college in the Ukraine, explained that combining their artistic flare makes their products "very special" and "high end". "My husband is Russian and it's got a crossover of the west meets east." She added that although they don't sell a lot in Ireland they do have a huge market in America, Canada and Asia. "We sell literally all over the world, mainly America and Canada but a lot in Asia and South Korea which is interesting. We're even getting orders from Vietnam and China. Everything is very decorative. We're working out of a workshop in the Czech Republic too." She added that they also won an export award for the Local Enterprise Office recently. "It's nice for the local people to know we're around. They said that we're one of the biggest exports for the type of work we do."
Extra sparkle and excitement as 10 charged Christmas in Killarney set to return following The magic dust has been ordered by the sleigh-load and extra sparkle has been added to the festive trimmings as the truly spectacular Christmas in Killarney celebrations will return with a vengeance in the coming weeks. With Santa cocooning for long spells last year, the festival had to be put on hold but that merely gave the amazing Team Christmas in Killarney ample opportunity to plan a bigger, better and more incredible party for 2021. The first of four fabulous and colourful street parades will wind through the streets on Saturday, November 27, at 6pm, and the magic will continue with further fun-filled parades on December 4, December 11 and December 18. As well as all the traditional favourites, an elaborate and spectacular new float has been added this year and it will certainly have a real wow factor as it takes to the streets. A new route has been planned for this year’s parade of floats and Christmas characters which will
wind its way from Fitzgerald Stadium along Lewis Road, on to College Street, Plunkett Street, Main Street and High Street with Santa looking forward to seeing all the boys and girls lining the streets. Strict COVID-19 protocols will apply and, to ensure everyone’s safety, those planning to attend are asked to wear facemasks and observe social distancing guidelines.
SANTA'S GROTTO
Plans are also being made for a Santa’s Grotto experience in the lead up to the festive season with details to be revealed very soon and the final pro-
gramme for the hugely popular Dine in Killarney Christmas experience is also being finalised. Mayor of Killarney Cllr Marie Moloney, who is a member of the Christmas in Killarney Committee, said it will be wonderful to see a bit of normality returning to the town for the festive season. “Last Christmas was very hard on everybody who couldn’t meet up with their loved ones and many people spent it on their own. This year, thankfully, there will be a bit more freedom for people to meet up and celebrate together,” she said. Santa Claus, meanwhile, has confirmed that he has pencilled the Killarney parades into his packed diary and he is really looking forward to seeing everybody when he arrives. “My little helpers have been doing their research and they told me just how hard everybody on the Christmas in Killarney Committee is working to make this year extra special. It is going to be a magical time in one of my favourite towns in the whole world,” he said.
investigation | By Sean Moriarty
10 people have been charged with 44 different offences in relation to the ongoing feud between families in the Ballyspillane area of the town. Tuesday's District Court sitting was the result of ‘Operation Spider’ and related to incidents that occurred on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day last year. The charges include assault, criminal damage, aggravated burglary and weapon offences. The feud has been on-going for years. At a previous District Court sitting, related to last Christmas’ incidents, four people were banned from Killarney. The Criminal Assets Bureau has, in the past, seized cars and property as a result of the feud. “This has been a long-running investigation,” a Killarney Garda spokesperson told the Killarney Advertiser.

Killarney is ready to sing again tonight | By Michelle Crean It'll be music to their ears tonight (Friday) as a community of singers are ready to begin lifting the roof again.
RADIO STAR: Ian O’Connell is to host his own Radio Kerry chat show interviewing people who have overcome adversity.
Ian O'Connell plans to stand out in new radio chat show Not only does he love to chat - but he has made it his mission to inspire others since a life-changing accident - so it's no wonder a Killarney man has secured his own radio show. | By Sean Moriarty After completing a media and broadcasting course at Kerry ETB, Ian O’Connell was offered his own Radio Kerry show which will feature Kerry people who have overcome hardship or difficulties to achieve great things. The Pinewood man was left with a life-changing injury aged 16 after falling from his mountain bike in Killarney National Park in the summer of 2017. As a result he sustained damage to his neck and spine. Since then he has used his disability as a form of inspiration and encourages others to get on with life regardless of what is thrown at them. He has been promoting a well-being lifestyle through his ‘if you can’t stand up, stand out’ mantra. That is the inspiration for the new show which will be called ‘Stand Out with Ian O’Connell’ and will be broadcast at 8pm every Wednesday from December 1. “Before my accident I would never have thought of a career in media,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “I did my work experience at Radio Kerry’s Killarney studio, I could not believe it when Fiona
The Kingdom Gospel Choir is back and ready to get going in the Friary Church, Killarney at 8pm and new members are welcome to come along. Set up by Caoimhe Lynch in January 2018, the popular choir always rehearsed in the John Paul II Pastoral Centre, but due to COVID had to disband temporarily. This year they have moved rehearsals to the Friary Church so that people can social distance and everyone can feel comfortable and safe, Caoimhe explained to the Killarney Advertiser. "I wanted it to be a place where people could just come for an hour out of their busy lives, to sing and have a laugh," she said. "After putting in a lot of work to do our Christmas concert in December 2019, we took a break and we were ready to get back to action at the end of February but with COVID, that never happened. I personally have missed the choir so much, as do all the members. It was very hard not seeing all the happy friendly faces on a Friday night. But the break has made us appreciate the fabulous community that we have in choir, and we are all ready to get back singing together again." She added that there's no commitment involved, and people just come along

when they can. "It's very relaxed and good fun, you don't need to be a singer. The choir has grown to now have over 120 members and it is a lively, fun, inviting environment, everyone leaves feeling uplifted. It has really become like a big family where everyone feels welcome. New members are always welcome to come along any Friday."
Witnesses sought following two assaults in Killarney town RADIO STAR: Ian O’Connell is to host own Radio Kerry chat show interviewing people who have overcome adversity.
[Stack – Radio Kerry’s manager] called me in, not just to offer me a job but that I was getting my own show too.” Ian will also work behind the scenes at the radio station. He has already produced and presented short programmes - known as packages in the trade - on topical issues like Fitbit watches and social media influencers. Meanwhile Killarney man Edward Groves is running a marathon in Mullingar on November 13 to raise funds for the Ian O’Connell Trust. To donate go to GoFundMe: 'Marathon fundraiser in aid of Ian O Connell trust'.
Gardaí in Killarney are appealing for witnesses following two separate incidents in the town over the weekend. One incident happened on Friday evening in the Park Road area where a man suffered “cuts and lacerations”, according to local gardai. A second incident occurred in Glebe Lane in the early hours of Sunday morning when a youth suffered cuts after a disturbance in the lane where a large number of people had congregated. Gardai confirmed that the injuries sustained by both victims were not life threatening. “We are appealing to witnesses to come forward,” Inspector Gary Thompson told the Killarney Advertiser.
“We are particularly interested in speaking to people that may have seen the lead up to these incidents. We are treating both incidents as assaults.” Anyone with information is asked to contact Killarney Garda Station on 064 6671160.

Dr Crokes GAA Club's 135th celebration on hold Plans to mark Dr Crokes GAA Club’s 135th anniversary on Tuesday night this week were put on hold due to ongoing COVID-19 concerns.

Vibrant new mural on Flesk cycleway
The club was founded in Fair Hill, Killarney on November 2, 1886. It is one of the oldest GAA clubs in the country, founded just two years after the GAA in Thurles in 1884. “The past two years have been very challenging for the whole country due to COVID restrictions and club activities have not still been back to full capacity," Matt O’Neill, chairman of Dr Crokes, said. Founding members were Jack Crowe, Paddy Crowe, Con Courtney, Denny Courtney, Jim Gallagher, Jim Gallivan,
Mick Gleeson, Con Guerin, Dan Guerin, Jack Kissane, Martin Kissane, John Langford, Mike Looney, Jim McGuinness, Michael Moriarty, Maurice Moynihan, Jim O’Leary, Michael O’Sullivan and Bob Roberts. "Plans to celebrate the 135th birthday of Dr Crokes GAA on Tuesday of this week had to be put on hold, but the occasion will be celebrated when HSE guidelines are issued and it is safe for normal activities to be resumed. Dr Crokes faced many challenges in its fascinating 135 year journey, but it survived evictions, the Land Dispute, the Spanish Flu, the 1916 Rising, the War of Independence, the bitter Civil War, two World Wars, the TB and Polio scourges and now the COVID-19 pandemic.”
The natural world that surrounds Killarney town has been brought to life in a stunning new mural. In recent weeks artist Curtis Hylton assisted by Magda Karol, were busy developing a vibrant mural along a section of the recently opened Flesk Cycleway in Killarney. It's all part of a project by Creative Ireland Kerry in partnership with Kerry County Council and Creative Ireland. The images depict some of the flora and fauna that surround the area. It is intended that the mural will add vibrancy and creativity to the cycleway and enhance the public's appreciation of the natural world that surrounds Killarney.
The programme's focus is to bring creativity into communities towards greater societal well-being. There are many projects across Kerry, with a variety of focus and delivery. Killarney Municipal District is developing more creative offerings to celebrate and inform locals and visitors on key aspects of the local area, ancient traditions and living culture. The mural is funded under the Creative Ireland Kerry Programme and was undertaken by The Walls Project.

Young filmmakers hope to be mobbed with extras! | By Michelle Crean
FILM: David Coffey Weakley and Roman Gallagher are looking for extras to take part in 'Mob 2' in town next week. Photo: Michelle Crean
Two young filmmakers - who have the dream of making it big in the film industry - are seeking extras for their new film. David Coffey Weakley and Roman Gallagher from Listry are looking for extras to take part in a scene in their new film 'Mob 2' which they will film in town on November 16. They plan to film in a number of streets in the town for about two hours from 2am and need people in the background to create a busy scene. The childhood friends set up D&R Productions in December 2019 and have made a number of other short films together with dreams of hitting the big time in the film industry. "We both have a passion for filmmaking,"
David, who works in Foley's Fossa, told the Killarney Advertiser. "This film 'Mob 2' will be longer, about an hour. We have filmed some scenes since June and hope to have it ready by early next month." David enjoys acting and writing scripts while Roman, who works in the Plaza Hotel, enjoys editing and camera work. The film is a crime drama, he added. "'Mob 2' is a gangster film about Thomas Crane. He's trying to take over the Irish side of the gangs but then he realises his past comes back to haunt him from 'Mob 1'. We're looking for 10 extras of any age to create a scene. It's towards the end of the film and we'll be running through the busy streets." Anyone who'd like to take part can email productionsdr99@gmail.com.

"We are so grateful to our supporters" A cheque for €10,500 from donations was presented to the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association (IMNDA).
BOOST: Over 1,400 Irish dancers from across the world are taking part in An Chomhdháil World Irish Dance Championships which will bring a welcome economic boost to town.
Kerry Friends of Motor Neurone Chairman Christy Lehane recently made a cheque presentation from donations made since November 2019 from the charity's supporters. "We are so grateful to all our friends and supporters who never let us down even in COVID times," Christy said. "We had to put on hold our many fundraising events
of 2020 and 2021." He explained that the money will go to make end of life easier for their Motor Neurone sufferers providing specialist equipment, Home Help and support and to pay specialist nurses' salaries. "Sadly over 86% of the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association’s annual income relies on fundraising and I think this is a terrible situation. I feel compelled to make a serious plea to HSE Government and local representatives to look favourably and address this awful situation."
1,400 dancers take to the stage in Killarney
Local businesses are set to get an economic boost this week as the An Chomhdháil World Irish Dance Championships kick off in Killarney. Taking place at The Gleneagle Hotel and Gleneagle INEC Arena, in excess of 1,400 dancers from America, Scotland, England, Europe and all over Ireland, will take to the stage over the course of the six days competing for a world title in the championships which run from November 1 to 6. Over 19 competitions take place over the six-day championships and winners are announced every day after each competition. The competitions are held in the INEC auditorium and The Gleneagle Ballroom. The age profile of the competitors is nine to over 21-years-old. An Chomhdháil is delighted to return to Killarney this year having been unable to run the event in 2020. This is Killarney’s fifth occasion to host the An Chomhdháil World Irish Dance Championships. Strict Government guidelines will be adhered to for indoor events. Only adults with COVID certificates will be permitted to enter. Dancers and spectators under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult with a COVID certificate. Face-

masks are mandatory. The economic benefits of these championships will be felt right across Killarney’s hotels, B&Bs, restaurants, shops and many other businesses. Studies carried out between 2016 and 2019 calculated the Championships were worth €12 million to the local economy. An Chomhdháil, the organisation who run the World Irish Dance Championships, have an extensive branch network worldwide and is one of the most progressive Irish Dance organisations, being the first Irish dance organisation to bring in the no make-up rule for girls under 13 years of age in 2007. Both male and female world champions will be crowned across a range of age categories from under 10 through to adult. “We are honoured to welcome the 2021 An Chomhdháil World Irish Dance Championships,” Patrick O’Donoghue, CEO of The Gleneagle Group, said. “We wish all the competitors the very best of luck and we hope everyone enjoys their stay in Killarney.”

Safety concerns forced national flag protocol breach | By Sean Moriarty Concerns for health and safety at Fitzgerald Stadium during last Sunday’s storm forced stadium staff to breach Tri Colour Flag rules. A flag was left at half-mast overnight on Sunday. This in breach of the many rules surrounding the flying the Irish national flag at public buildings. The national flag should be displayed in the open only between sunrise and sunset, but flags that are flown at night must be lit-up. Flying the flag at halfmast is reserved for periods of national mourning and there are protocols in place, including the methods in which the flag is set at half-mast for such occasions. Sunday was a very busy day at the stadium as County Championship matches were played at the venue, volunteers arrived on site before 10am and many
were still there after 5pm that evening. The flag was raised ahead of all the games, and in line with protocol, and it was intended to remove it on conclusion of the day’s final game. It can only be accessed by climbing ladders to the top of the scoreboard. A wind and rain storm ravaged the county making conditions very difficult for anyone to work in. “It was so bad that several other GAA matches were postponed in other venues,” Stadium chairman Der Brosnan told the Killarney Advertiser. “The second game concluded at 5pm and conditions were still very bad. It was then that I, as chairman made the decision based on the health and safety of the caretaker to ask him not to attempt to climb the ladders as the winds were too strong and I feared for his safety. I was aware I was breaching protocol but I believed in this instance health and safety concerns were more significant.”

Marie Meets
Well-known and much loved photographer Marie Carroll-O’Sullivan chats to locals about their news, views and accomplishments in her monthly column ‘Marie Meets’.
After months of speculation as to ‘who would it be’ to replace popular Principal Colm O Súilleabháin at the Mon NS, all bets were on Mary Brosnan, an existing teacher at the school. Well-known for her “zesty” and “up for the challenge of whatever life throws at her” personality, evidently displayed on the stage at Dr Crokes Strictly Come Dancing amongst many other events, it came as no surprise that Mary Brosnan would in fact ‘go for it’! “I really had to think about it Marie. I thought to myself what would I be doing going for such a position with five children and my youngest just three?” Mary explained. “After careful consideration it soon became a given. I had held the position of Deputy Principal for the past 10 years [out of 16] at The Mon so I knew the school inside out. I worked so closely with Colm to achieve the fabulous school that The Mon is today. Marie, I knew I would always have five children but I also knew I would always love The Mon. The support amongst my family and friends and my colleagues was fantastic and I was lucky enough to receive the advice and time from people within my field before the interview. This was so helpful to me and I was absolutely delighted to get the position.” Ok, let’s hear a little bit more about Mary Brosnan, I smiled. Mary gulped and took a sip of water from her pink flask that read ‘Principal’. “One of our SNAs, Geraldine Pigott, gifted me this on my first day and I actually use it all the time,” Mary laughed. I wanted to use it as a prop in Mary’s accompanying photo but she was having none of it!
CAREER
Mary Brosnan was born in Killarney but soon moved to Tralee as her dad worked in the bank at a time where bank managers were moved regularly. From Tralee to Middleton and back to Killarney, Mary’s education was at St Oliver’s NS followed by Presentation, she then repeated her Leaving Cert as one of the first of 10 girls at The Sem before heading on to UCC to study Science - which she hated. “I missed the classroom so much. I knew

TEACHER TURNED PRINCIPAL: Mary Brosnan makes history after being appointed as The Mon's first ever female Principal.
then that I wanted to teach. I spent three years in Mary I before teaching in St Anthony’s Ballyknock in Cork. When a position arose at The Mon I was delighted at the thoughts of returning to Killarney. Would you believe I have never taught girls. It has always been boys schools apart from a few weeks college placement.”
“WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVOURITE CLASS TO TEACH MARY?”
“Initially, I thought that it was Junior/ Senior Infants. I loved teaching the children how to read, a skill that would stay with them for life, but then when I moved to The Mon, I found Fifth and Sixth Class equally as rewarding. It wasn’t just about teaching, it was about educating in life skills as well as academ-
ically. These are impressionable years and there is a similar innocence too,” Mary replied.
“SO WHAT’S CHANGED FOR YOU MARY NOW THAT YOU ARE SEATED IN THE PRINCIPAL’S CHAIR?”
“Everything has changed but nothing has changed if that makes sense Marie. The school is exactly as it was on a day to day basis but we miss Colm alright. We are delighted for him as new Principal at St Oliver’s NS. He has fantastic forward thinking skills but he needed a bigger platform I think. He has a brilliant mind. The timing might have been a little off, given he doesn’t get to enjoy our brand new school that he carefully masterminded, but when is the timing ever right Marie?” Mary replied. If it’s for you
it won’t pass you came to mind. The Mon NS educates 40 different nationalities but as Mary says herself, “they are all Killarney boys, and they are all Mon boys”. There are 16 teachers, six SNAs, Secretary Alice and Caretaker Tadhg, and between them all they educate 190 pupils from Second to Sixth Class. It’s a big ship to steer but it didn’t seem like a big deal to Mary. It comes naturally to her. As I left the Principal’s office, we passed by the outdoor classroom and Dott’s garden, one of the new additions to the school. It really is impressive even on a cold and wet November morning. Complete with an outdoor blackboard, weatherproof seating and sheltered by a sturdy gazebo, only that it was pelting rain we might have taken Mary’s photo there. Breaking boundaries, Mary was one of the first females to complete a Leaving Cert at an all boys school across the road at The Sem, and Mary has taught nothing other than boys throughout her career. In her personal life Mary and her husband Eoin are blessed amongst women with five daughters; Annie, Elizabeth, Jane, Susie and Maryann, but quite the opposite in her career as the first ever female Principal in the history of The Mon NS.

SVP launch draw to support those facing unprecedented pressure St Vincent de Paul (SVP) has this week revealed unprecedented pressure on core services of food, shelter and education across the South-West. | By Michelle Crean Up to one thousand people across Kerry and Cork, who are struggling to pay utility bills, made calls to St Vincent De Paul (SVP) South-West every week during the month of October seeking assistance from the charity in the run-up to Christmas. Organisers say this year’s annual car draw, which has been extended to Kerry for the very first time, is now more important than ever. SVP South-West have said callers also reported being in significant arrears with utility suppliers after an embargo that was imposed to prevent people from being cut off during the pandemic was lifted by the Government. 80% of SVP’s core fundraising is now conducted during the October to December period, with traditional church collections only permitted to resume recently. "Last year we were blown away by the support we received during such a difficult time," Regional President Paddy O’Flynn said. "However, we are deeply concerned that there is a perception that the difficulty and challenges that we faced last year have somewhat diminished with the re-opening of society. “Embargos on evictions and cutting off

Last year, over 8,400 families and individuals were contacted and supported by SVP volunteers in Cork and Kerry

Monsignor O'Flaherty's story to be told in INEC | By Sean Moriarty The story of one of Killarney’s favourite sons, Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty, will be told at a special play in the INEC next month.
LOCAL HERO: Killarney actor Donal Courtney will tell Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty’s story at the INEC.
‘God Has No Country’ is the story of Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty’s war time exploits in Rome. It will be performed at the INEC on December 21 at 8pm. Last week the Killarney Advertiser revealed that the INEC is to launch a new ‘Culture Club’. Three different plays will take place between November 28 and December
22 with ‘God Has No Country’ as the season finale. Killarney’s own Donal Courtney will perform the one-man play. “The story is told from the Monsignor’s point of view,” Donal said. “It is a study of the torment and difficulty in the decisions he undertook in his fight for justice. This is re-enacted through the use of storytelling and various characterisations. The play is a dramatisation of actual events, and while careful research has been carried out in its creation, as a dramatic work certain licence has been taken.”

Friary mourns the passing of Fr Fintan The Franciscan Friars in Killarney are in mourning after one of their own, Fr Fintan, was laid to rest this week. | By Sean Moriarty Dublin-based Fr Fintan (Michael) O'Shea OFM passed away on Monday after a very brief illness. Born in Killarney in 1939, Michael was educated in Franciscan College, Gormanston, Co Meath. He entered the Franciscan novitiate in his native town in September 1958 and received Fintan as his religious name. He celebrated his First Profession on September, 8, 1959. After studies in Galway and Rome he was ordained to the priesthood in Rome on March 5, 1966. As well as ministering in various friaries in Ireland, Fintan was part of the Irish Franciscan missions in Chile and later in El Salvador. While stationed in Dublin he was, for a time, chaplain to Dublin Port, and for many years chaplain to CIE Dublin. He was a member of the well-known MD ‘Mackey’ O’Shea's business family in the town. Only three weeks ago Fr Fintan paid a visit to his colleagues at the Friary in Killarney. “He enjoyed his trip home when he visited his family’s businesses and this was a big part of our conversations over dinner at night,” Br Kevin Lynch, the Killarney Friary’s Guardian, told the Killarney Advertiser. “He was booked to come

and visit us again in three weeks time.” He was laid to rest at Aghadoe Cemetery yesterday morning (Thursday) following Requiem Mass at the Franciscan Friary. He is sadly missed by his brothers Dona and Tim, and sister Peggy (Coghlan), as well as brother-in-law, sisters-inlaw, nephews, nieces, grandnephews, grandnieces, his Franciscan Brothers, relatives and his many friends.
The newly established scholarship is the result of a partnership between MIC and the GPA, in an extension of the proven track record both have for promoting sport and education. The MIC GPA Scholarship Scheme is open to GPA members who have applied for and are successful in securing a place on MIC’s postgraduate programmes in education and the liberal arts. Two scholarships are offered on an annual basis. Pádraig, who plays for Firies, was awarded the scholarship in recognition of his commitment to his education while also succeeding on the sports field. Previously playing with East Kerry, de Brún won a County Championship Minor Football Medal in 2013 and Captained East Kerry Minors in 2014. He won a County Championship Senior Football Medal with East Kerry Seniors in 2019. A member of the
Limerick Senior Football Team since 2017, de Brún holds McGrath Cup and Division 4 Allianz National League Medals with the Shannonsiders. Off the field he is teaching at Limerick’s Ardscoil Rís, where he also attended, and is currently studying the M Ed in Middle Leadership and Mentoring at MIC’s Thurles campus, having previously received a first-class honours at Diploma level. He completed his BA and PME at University College Cork. Limerick camogie star Caoimhe Costelloe was also awarded a scholarship. "Not surprisingly the calibre of applicants to the scheme this year was very high and we had a difficult task in choosing just two successful recipients," Professor Niamh Hourigan said. "However, Pádraig and Caoimhe are worthy recipients and we are delighted to be able to support them in this way as they further their academic journey at MIC whilst continuing to pursue their sporting career. On behalf of MIC, I wish them all the best with their studies and look forward to seeing them on the field."
Brodie donates lots of locks to children's charity | By Michelle Crean With a head full of beautiful curls there was no doubt that one kind-hearted young girl would help others by cutting it for charity. And not only that but 10-year-old Brodie O'Brien from Chestnut Drive was so determined to help others that she has also raised over €1,000 for the LauraLynn Foundation which helps support children and their families through cancer. Hairdressing friend Joanne Henderson called to the house last week and managed to cut off five plaits which are on their way to The Little Princess Trust to create hair pieces for children with cancer. With a whole new look, Brodie was excited to show it off to her Fourth Class friends in Gaelscoil Faithleann.
Her parents, mom Miriam and dad Richie, and little brother Ashton are all very proud of her giving nature. "We'd always be talking about helping others," Miriam told the Killarney Advertiser. As her hair was growing longer and with her communion delayed due to COVID, she decided that when she eventually cut it that it would benefit others. "She felt she could do something good with it," Miriam added. And the goodwill from people making donations was amazing, she added. "People were ringing to say they had a donation dropped. People really came on board and supported her. Thanks also to Joanne Henderson for cutting her hair, she's great." To help Brodie raise even more money go to www.idonate.ie/brodieobrien120.

made off with new Husqvarna chainsaws, consaws, blowers and hedge-trimmers. “I am looking for information on an Audi A3 hatchback, black, three-door, with rear window tints and with 18-inch or 19inch alloy wheels. The car then headed off in the Castlemaine direction. A substantial value of goods were taken,” he said. “We are also looking for a white Toyota Auris – the CCTV shows them [robbers] pulling out in front of the Toyota.” If anyone has any info or seen anything please contact Killorglin Garda Station on 066 979 0500.
A MAGICAL STORY: Artist and author, Felicia Thomas from Killarney, with her new children's book 'Miss Polly and the Crocodile' set in the magical land of Loopaloo. Photo: Valerie O'Sullivan
Debut novel published by Arbutus Grove resident Learning to write again after a life-changing accident some years ago has helped one local resident publish her first ever children's book. | By Michelle Crean Felicia Thomas, who is originally from Kent but living in Arbustus Grove for the past 30 years, is thrilled to have her book 'Miss Polly and the Crocodile' set in the magical land of Loopaloo, printed and now in local bookshops. The artist and author put pen to paper to not only write, but also illustrate the book, as part of her rehabilitation after a life-changing accident in 2013. It tells the story of a grumpy king, a very spoilt princess, Miss Polly and a crocodile, a shy little girl, good friends and a bully, and it's aimed at ages five to eight yearolds. The characters are faced with very relatable problems, but find that being nice to
others and a little magic can save the day. "I lost my fingers in an accident some years ago," Felicia told the Killarney Advertiser. "I wrote the book as a way to exercise my hand and then I put it away for years." It was when she was asked to illustrate a book for someone else earlier this year that she thought of her own again and sent it to a publisher, and they loved it! "They came back and said they loved it straight away. I'm very excited about it." Now published with illustrations by Felicia herself, the book is available in Eason Killarney, Woulfes in Listowel, Crystal Cave in Killorglin, Kanturk Bookshop, Puccinis in Kenmare and from her website www.feliciathomas.ie for €8.99.
Booster vaccines for people aged 60 and over The HSE is putting arrangements in place to offer booster vaccine doses for those aged 60 and over. When offering the primary COVID-19 vaccine course to this age group earlier in 2021, people aged 60-69 were invited to HSE vaccination centres, and uptake of the vaccine among this age group approached universal levels, according to the HSE. "For this reason, the HSE intends to use the same approach in offering the
booster dose to people in this age group, inviting them for their booster dose at a HSE vaccination centre, where we have capacity and capability to deal with large numbers over a short time," the HSE said in a statement. "People in this age group will begin being invited for their booster dose six months after their second COVID-19 vaccine dose. Similarly, people aged 70 and over will once again be offered their next COVID-19 vaccine booster by their GPs."
APPEAL: Gardai in Killorglin are looking for these four men who broke into O'Neill's Powertools on Tuesday morning.
Special St Brendan’s College Christmas Concert | By Sean Moriarty It will be music to students' ears next month as legendary local musician Liam O’Connor plans to perform a special Christmas concert. Liam, who recently recorded a new single with Clannad’s legendary vocalist Moya Brennan, will take to the stage at St Brendan’s College on December 8. The pair, and their extended families, will perform at St Brendan’s as the first leg of a short pre-Christmas tour that also includes dates in Boherbue Church in Cork on December 9 and Watergate Theatre in Kilkenny on December 10. The idea behind the mini tour was hatched during their recent appearance on RTE’s ‘The Late Late Show’. It will be the ninth year that Liam and his family have performed at St Brendan’s College. “This all came about at The Late Late Show, the opportunity arose to do something special at Christmas for St Brendan’s and raise the spirits there after the last year,” Liam told the Killarney Advertiser. “We will be joined by musicians from the school. It’s a chance to highlight the great work music teachers Mish O’Donoghue and Niamh O’Connell are doing there too.”
FESTIVE CONCERT: The O'Connor family, Cillian, Saoirse, Liam and Oisín will perform a special Christmas concert at St Brendan's College next month.
This special Christmas concert is a separate event to Liam’s traditional early spring concert at the college and plans are in place to revive that concert next year. Liam’s current link-up with the Grammy and Emmy award-winning Clannad singer Moya also includes Liam’s sons Oisín on drums, guitar, keyboards and vocals, Cillian on bodhran and drums, and daughter Saoirse on keyboards, concertina and vocals. Legendary hurler Joe Canning will be the guest speaker at the event.

Beautiful day for Ellen and Stephen
WEDDING OF THE WEEK
22
Saturday October 16 was a magical day for one couple who gathered with family and friends for their wedding day. Ellen Grogan and Stephen Flattery, who are living in Kennedy’s Petfarm Brewsterfield were married by Fr Niall Geaney at the Prince of Peace Church, Fossa. Ellen is originally from Leopardstown in Dublin and Stephen from Kells in Co. Meath but they have settled in Killarney. Ellen is a primary school teacher working between Tahilla CNS and St John’s Kenmare while Stephen is an Agricultural Advisor working in Teagasc Killarney. The bridal party included Sorcha Quigley, Katie Tiernan, Claire Young and Alanna McMullan, Shane McNiffe, Cathal McCabe, Gary McGovern and William Carry. Ellen is daughter of Michael Grogan and Sheila Grogan (RIP) and Stephen is son of Julie and Frank Flattery. “We had a wonderful day,” Ellen told the Killarney Advertiser. “There were a few showers but temperatures were warm for October. We were lucky that the rain held off for our photos in Muckross Abbey.” The ceremony was beautiful with Ellen’s friends from Marino College doing the
music; Eanya Tone singing, Claire Gormley on keyboard, and Áine Ní Chróinín on violin. And the drinks reception was a big hit with the guests and themselves with Seamus Harty, a young musician from Tralee, singing and playing the guitar. “The dancing had begun before the meal even started! The bell had to be rung many times to get the crowd to sit for dinner. Muckross Park Hotel did an amazing job, the food was top class. The dance floor was never empty as it was most people’s first time dancing in nearly two years.” Although it was a very happy day, two people were gravely missed by all, she added. Ellen’s mom Sheila had passed away in February from COVID and Stephen’s older sister Sinéad who passed away suddenly six years ago. “We went on a honeymoon to Italy; Venice, Florence, Rome and the Amalfi coast. “The weather was gorgeous and we ate tonnes of pasta and pizza!”

THE GIFT OF GIVING: Children from Maggie's Montessori were excited to take part in the Team Hope Christmas Shoebox Appeal to give gifts to other children.
Children learn the value of giving gifts Pre-schoolers from Maggie’s Montessori enjoyed taking part in the Team Hope Christmas Shoebox Appeal, an annual campaign that delivers gifts straight into the hands of children affected by poverty. In preparation to take part, the children’s awareness of giving rather than receiving became an exciting activity. "This was a perfect opportunity to promote an understanding for the concepts of charity, sharing and being kind," Mags O'Sullivan from Maggie's Montessori told the Killarney Advertiser. "As the children themselves got involved
in building their own shoeboxes along with their families, a sense of teamwork and fun was apparent. They each chose gifts from the 4W’s items list - Write, Wash, Wear and Wow. Filling the shoeboxes for a boy or girl similar to their own age proved a thoroughly enjoyable experience and it is hoped that this tradition will be continued each year."

GARDENMAGIC
Gardening - By Debby Looney
Debby is available for advice and garden consultations, just call 086 6088156 or email barnhillky@gmail.com
Garden upkeep and cleaning There are always things to be done in the garden, but at this time of year it is maintenance and cleaning, neither of which are my favourite jobs! Glasshouses should be tidied and cleaned, as bugs and diseases will lurk and survive in the relative warmth of the glasshouse. An ideal, though not organic, way to get aphids and other insects under control is by using an insect ‘bomb'. This will diffuse a toxic smoke killing all insects. If you are keen to use the glasshouse during the winter, remember to insulate against frost, unless you have heating, of course. There are several ways in which to heat your glasshouse, paraffin heaters would have been the most common way of heating in the past, though they are near impossible to purchase these days. Most heating nowadays uses electricity. I see solar panels popping up beside glasshouses, which is a great thing with heated beds being the most cost effective and energy efficient method. This essentially involves running specially designed heating cables under the beds which keeps them at a constant temperature. Insulate with a horticultural grade bubble wrap. Remember, the only heat your polytunnel or glasshouse gets is that from the sun, which, in the winter can be very little, and disappears fast, or the heat from the
ground. It is this ground warmth which is your main source of heating, especially at night, so if you have tender plants, protecting them from above with horticultural fleece will minimise the effects of cold air. If you have plants in pots outside, try to group them together. This will keep the roots that bit warmer, especially during very cold spells. Make sure drainage holes in pots are clear and plants do not become waterlogged. Here in Kerry waterlogging is more of a problem than frost damage, so it is worth your while to put pots under cover or on a side of the building that does not get all the rain! Perennial summer plants, such as geraniums, gaura, osteospermum, fuchsias etc are much more likely to survive winter if brought indoors, where the temperature is guaranteed to stay around 10 degrees Celsius. Cut back now to a neat manageable size, and check occasionally for watering. It is unlikely they will need more than a once a week water. The last few days have been very wet, surely a reminder of how the winter might be! Covering over beds, both inside and outside, with black polythene and/or a mulch will prevent nutrients leaching out, and keep the soil a little drier. It will also benefit you in the spring when it comes to sowing and planting out potatoes as the soil will be significantly warmer than if it is unprotected.

SKPD honours retiring Board Members Six retiring South Kerry Development Partnership (SKDP) directors were honoured at a special event that took place in Killorglin recently. The retiring members, George Kelly, Donie Doody, Daniel O’Sullivan, Cllr. Donal O’Grady, Eugene Dennehy and Shivaun Shanahan, represented a range of sectors and between them had served a total of 44 years on the Board. Speaking at the event, CEO Noel Spillane sincerely thanked all of them for their service and commitment during their tenure. He noted that being on a Board such as that of the Partnership brings with it significant responsibilities and without the service they were willing to give, it would not be possible for such organisations to operate. Noel also praised the work they did in representing SKDP outside of their Board attendance and noted how valuable this was in linking the community and business sectors across South Kerry to the work of the Partnership. "This is also hugely valuable in enabling

Killarney people favour introduction of partial restrictions | By Sean Moriarty The majority of Killarney people would welcome partial restrictions due to the current rise in COVID-19 cases in the country. Earlier this week public health officials confirmed 3,726 new cases of COVID-19 in Ireland was the highest daily figure since January 14. The Killarney Advertiser conducted a readers' survey.
We asked what should the Government do due to the current rise in COVID-19 case numbers in the country? The majority of respondents - 51.55% said partial restrictions should be introduced. A total of 36.65% did not want to see any changes to the current set-up and voted to keep the country and society open. Only 13.66 percent wanted another full lockdown introduced.
ANSWER CHOICES • Yes, they made the right call • No, it’s too soon for further reopening • Don’t know
RESPONSES 55.81% 30.23% 13.95%
He noted that all of the retiring Board members gave freely of their time and said that their experience and input across the organisation helped create the strong and important organisation that SKDP is for South Kerry. Retiring director Cllr Donal O’Grady thanked both CEO Noel Spillane and all of the Partnership staff for their
work and the support they provided to him and the other directors during their time on the Board. He said that the Partnership undertakes a significant amount of work across the region, some of which goes unnoticed by people, but that its efforts deliver a significant benefit to South Kerry as a whole.

Killarney Community College students have entered a project entitled 'How quarantine and home office affect our
psyche'. Over 1,000 students will represent their schools and communities at the virtual exhibition which runs from January 12 to 14. “I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all students that entered the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition 2022,” said Minister for Education Norma Foley TD. “The exhibition continues to provide a real opportunity to our young people to engage in so many diverse aspects of science and technology. I look forward to learning more about the findings and exciting creative solutions that have been uncovered in our students’ work. SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL
Consumer Rights
Beauty - By Jill O'Donoghue
It’s that time of year again when Christmas is fast approaching and shoppers are out in force.
Your skincare and perimenopause
Most purchases of goods and services go smoothly, but what happens when things go wrong? Rest assured that when you buy a product or a service you have a number of rights under Irish and European Union (EU) legislation. These laws aim to give you strong rights when you buy in a shop or online, make sure you get enough information to make a buying decision based on facts and make sure there are redress options available to you if things go wrong. By law, sellers or suppliers (known as ‘traders’) must treat you fairly, for example, by making sure products and services are safe and of a high standard.
CONSUMER CONTRACTS
When you buy goods and services, you are making a contract with the seller. As parties to the agreement, both you and the seller have certain legal rights and obligations. Contracts can be made verbally, in writing, or by your conduct. There are certain parts of a contract that businesses are free to set. However, these terms must not go against your consumer rights.
CONSUMER RIGHTS
Irish and EU consumer laws only apply to transactions between a consumer and a trader. It does not apply when: • You buy from a private individual who is not a trader (for example, someone who is selling their own car to you but who does not sell cars as a profession) • You buy goods or services intended for use in your business (business-to-business transactions) • You buy from a trader based outside the EU or European Economic Area (Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein)
SALE OF GOODS AND SUPPLY OF SERVICES ACT 1980
When you buy products, they must be ‘in conformity with the contract’. This means they must be: • able and acceptable standard, taking into account other factors such as durability and price • Fit for the purpose you bought it for – they should work and do what they are reasonably expected to do • As described – they should match any description given in an advert or other information provided by the seller at the time of sale If the products you receive are not of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose or do not match the description you were given, you have a right to certain remedies. A remedy could be a repair, replacement
or a refund. Contracts for the supply of services are currently subject to much less statutory regulation than contracts for the sale of products. When you make an agreement with a supplier of services, for example, a carpenter, a plumber or a dentist, the agreement may be written or oral or a bit of both. In general, the terms of the agreement are what you agree with the supplier or trader.
ONLINE SHOPPING RIGHTS
When you buy online from an online trader in Ireland, or elsewhere in the EU, you have strong rights under the EU Consumer Rights Directive (CRD). These include: • The right to clear and accurate information • The right to change your mind and cancel (some purchases are not included) • The express right to refund for delayed or non-delivery • Right to redress in case of faulty goods.
WHAT IS MY ‘RIGHT TO REDRESS’ IF THINGS GO WRONG?
If you have a problem with something you have bought (for example, it is faulty or does not meet the description given), it is always the seller who must put things right. As a general rule, the seller must offer a repair or replacement. Alternatively, they can give you a refund.
IF YOU ARE NOT SATISFIED WITH THE QUALITY OF THE PRODUCTS OR SERVICES YOU SHOULD:
• Return the item to the seller (not the manufacturer) • Act as soon as you can – a delay can indicate that you have accepted faulty products • Don’t attempt to repair the item yourself or give it to anyone else to repair it • Make sure you have proof of purchase, for example a receipt or credit card statement For services, keep all evidence of damage caused by poor work, for example take photos. As we age hormone levels change which can have an effect on your skin. Perimenopause starts off in the early 40s and it's a good idea to get ahead of it with skincare, supplements and nutrition. Incorporating vitamin C night creams is very beneficial when experiencing perimenopause. Stabilised vitamin C can only be used at night on the skin as it reacts with sunlight. Sothys detoxifying resurfacing night cream is amazing, and the closest thing to a facial in a night cream. Vitamin C is a powerful ingredient to fight against environmental issues and helps build protection within the skin from free radicals. Our skin can't produce collagen without vitamin C so it is a must-have ingredient if you're looking to boost and safeguard collagen levels for anti-ageing. Vitamin C can help boost your hydration long-term also, and there is a link between the drop of estrogen and the
lack of skin hydration during perimenopause. Keep hydrated from the inside out, again it's important to be ahead of the symptoms and try to minimise them rather than trying to cure an issue. If you are allowing yourself to get dehydrated and are gasping for water it may lead to increased hot sweats and extreme dehydrated of the skin. Some key ingredients to look out for when choosing the correct skincare products include: • Green tea extract in creams may slow down the signs of ageing and reduce sagging skin and wrinkles. • Hyaluronic acid enhances the skin's ability to retain moisture and smooth skin. • Peptides stimulate collagen production. • Retinol (Vitamin A) boosts the amount of collagen your body makes and plumps up your skin. A WEEKLY ROUND-UP OF NEWS • VIEWS FROM KERRY AND AROUND THE WORLD SUPPORT

Night Walk raises more than €107,000 for cancer service As a result of the incredible fundraising efforts of everyone involved in the Boots Night Walk, €107,000 was raised to benefit an important service which provides end of life care for cancer patients in their own home. Since the partnership began between Boots and the Irish Cancer Society in 2012, more than €2.2 million has been raised for the Irish Cancer Society Night Nurse service, the equivalent of over 6,600 nights of nursing care for families across the country. Now in its ninth year, the Boots Night Walk is designed to raise both funds and awareness of the critical care provided by the Irish Cancer Society Night Nurses. This year, due to COVID-19 safety measures and to ensure everyone’s safety, Boots Ireland continued to do things a little differently. The Boots Night Walk took place on Monday September 6 where almost 300 walkers from across the country chose the location and time of their 5km walk and walked together from afar. The Irish Cancer Society Night Nurses provide in-home care through the night, for cancer patients requiring end-of-life care, whilst also providing rest and respite for the patient’s families. The service is provided free of charge and is an invaluable support to families and their loved ones during what can be a particularly difficult time. The service ensures patients and their loved ones receive nursing care, practical support and reassurance, keeping

the patient comfortable and free of pain. “We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone involved in making the 2021 Night Walk so special, your support really matters," Stephen Watkins, Managing Director, Boots Ireland, said. "The Night Nursing service is funded almost entirely by donations, so fundraising initiatives like the Boots Night Walk are vital and make it possible for the Irish Cancer Society to reach people affected by cancer.” Speaking about the funds raised for the
Night Nursing service, Averil Power, CEO Irish Cancer Society, added that “every year there is a huge demand for the Night Nursing service". "With a growing number of families choosing to bring family members home to die, this crucial service is needed more than ever before. We are so grateful to Boots Ireland’s colleagues and customers for their generous support. With thanks to you, the Irish Cancer Society can continue to be there for families across Ireland when they need us most.”
The news was released in a newly published study in the Science Advances journal and according to scientists will become a “significant addition” to the global effort to stop the spread of the virus. They say the chip will be “superior to traditional needle-and-syringe vaccination” and will also be easier to distribute as they can be stored at room temperature. However, like most vaccines there could be side effects according to Smithsonian Mag, who said “like any vaccine”, it may “leave your arm feeling sore because it delivers an agent that’s meant to stimulate an immune response”. The patch “also produces some redness that usually goes away over the course of a few days”, the magazine added.
Missing Aussie girl found safe A child who went missing from an Australian campsite more than two weeks ago has been found safe. Little four-year-old Cleo Smith went missing in the early hours of October 16 from the family's tent. She had woken at 1.30am for a drink of water before going back to sleep, but her family discovered she was gone at 6am the following morning. After extensive searches over the past
few weeks she was found in a room of a house after police were given a tip off. The Western Australia Government had offered a reward of 1 million Australian dollars for information leading to Cleo's discovery. A 36-year-old local man who has "no family connection" was taken into police custody, WA Police Commissioner Chris Dawson told ABC Radio Perth. He was not in the house at the time of the raid.
"When she said "My name is Cleo", I don't think there was a dry eye in the house," he added. "I have seen seasoned detectives openly crying with relief. I am speechless which is very rare ... this is something we all hoped in our hearts, and it has come true." The child's mother, Ellen Smith, said "Our family is whole again" when she posted on Instagram.

Jupiter's moon Europa revealed It's finally been revealed what the north pole of Jupiter's moon Europa looks like.
Mummies found in desert have unexpected origins Researchers have sequenced the genome of the mysterious Tarim Basin mummies for the first time, in an effort to understand the origins of these fascinating people. The mummies are a collection of hundreds of exceptionally preserved remains, up to 4,000-years-old, found buried in the desert in Western China. Scientists had assumed they were migrants to the region because of their cosmopolitan style - they were buried in boats, wearing western-style felted clothing, and holding agricultural products such as wheat and cheese. "What we ultimately found was something that was very surprising, and I have to say, completely unexpected," said study co-author Christina Warinner. "It's not that frequently where we look at a set of data and think, “Wow, that was not something I expected at all.” The surprise was that despite their cosmopolitan accoutrements, these people
were in fact Indigenous to the area but genetically isolated from other neighbouring communities. "They adopted dairying practices and made cheeses. They learned how to farm both wheat from the west and millet from the east…. They seem to have been very culturally cosmopolitan." This area where the mummies were found is now "one of the harshest places on Earth", said Warinner, however thousands of years ago it would have been a lush river oasis. Snow melted from mountains to the north would have led to large, vast rivers flowing through the area. However, because of the lack of geographic features constraining these rivers, they were prone to sudden shifts, which could be the reason behind this populations' demise. "They lived there and thrived when it was this riverine oasis, and when the river moved, they were suddenly stranded in the middle of the desert."
Countries pledge to tackle climate change Over 100 countries have pledged to cut methane emission levels by 30% by 2030. World leaders at the COP26 summit in Glasgow made the vow as part of efforts to tackle the climate crisis. The Global Methane Pledge is an international initiative put forward by the US and EU to reduce methane emissions, to slow
warming in the short term. The Biden administration also plans to tackle oil and gas wells, pipelines and other infrastructure which they hope will, in time, have a positive effect on extreme weather events. "What we do in this decisive decade is going to impact whether or not we can meet our longer-term commitment," US President Biden said.
The distant view from NASA's Juno spacecraft orbiting Jupiter captures the previously unseen region of the icy moon, which has water vapor apparently arising from plumes and which may have habitable conditions in its ocean. The image was taken from nearly 50,000 miles (80,000 kilometres) away while Juno was performing its primary mission to examine Jupiter's atmosphere. The resolution is admittedly quite rough, as individual pixels are rendered at roughly 31 to 37 miles (50 to 60km) each. But you can see changes in the albedo, or light reflectivity, on an otherwise very bright moon. The view will improve next year when the spacecraft zooms only a few hundred miles above that same region, Juno prin-
cipal investigator Scott Bolton said during a NASA press conference. "This is a tantalizing example and a taste of what is to come," Bolton, who is director of the space science and engineering division of the Southwest Research Institute (SwRI), said. The Europa results were briefly mentioned during a larger discussion about 3D views of Jupiter's atmosphere, and the deep roots of the persistent storm known as the Great Red Spot. Later in the decade, at least two major missions are expected to launch to Europa. The European Space Agency's Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer (JUICE) will fly by Europa and several other icy worlds after launch in June 2022, while NASA's Europa Clipper will focus on the moon following launch in October 2024. Both missions will arrive and operate at Europa in the 2030s.
Amateur drama returns to St John’s Theatre It’s all about community drama at St John’s Theatre Listowel this month, with two local groups, the Tarbert Theatre Players and Listowel's St John’s Theatre Group, making their very welcome return to the stage. The Tarbert Theatre Players present Brian Friel’s ‘Faith Healer’ for three nights from November 19. Frank Hardy, played by Gerry O’Connor travels through remote country offering his unique cure to the most hopeless of people. In this haunting exploration of the power of belief and faith, the play exposes the absurd as narrated retrospectively by Noelle McGibney playing wife Gracie, and Shane Wall playing his manager, Teddy. St John’s Theatre Group brings John B Keane’s classic comedy, 'Moll', with Frances Kennedy playing the protag-
onist as the priest’s resourceful new housekeeper. Batt O’Keeffe plays the Canon, while Johnny Corkery is the reluctant curate in charge of bingo. Moll runs from Thursday, November 25 for five nights. Emma Langford, the Limerick artist, renowned for her beautiful take on Irish folk music, appears in St Johns with her band, on November 11 as part of her Ireland Winter Tour 2021. Renowned Irish Pianist Finghín Collins takes to the road on a major 17-concert recital of Ireland and will perform in St John’s Theatre on Wednesday, November 24. Tickets for all events are now available online at www.stjohnstheatre.ie or by contacting the Box Office 068 22566. All productions begin at 8pm and Vaccine Certificates must be shown on arrival in theatre.

HEALTH & FITNESS Advice - By Tommy Flaherty Tommy is available for advice and fitness consultations, at info@activate.ie or check our website www.activate.ie
The need for kids to move more It seems obvious at first glance that kids need to move more - the obesity epidemic is growing, and technology invites a more sedentary lifestyle and creates a new set of movement problems. Sports specialisation along with helicopter parenting have fostered a generation or two who have not experienced, and are not experiencing, play as children. Children are missing something natural - normal healthy movement, a variety of sometimes fast, sometimes slow, sometimes heavy, and sometimes difficult exertion. So, we should have kids workout because we see that the lack of movement is bad.
WHY KIDS SHOULD WORKOUT
Kids should work out because it encourages, supports, and helps sustain good physical and mental health. As it develops, the human body needs movement to properly make use of natural physiological, as well as psychological and social development milestones in the most optimal way. There is an abundance of research out there identifying the benefits of physical activity for various aspects of our well-being: brain function, cardiorespiratory health, lymphatic system, mental health, etc. We need to move for optimal health, no matter our age.
“KIDS CAN’T EXPRESS WHAT THEY DON’T POSSESS”
It seems intuitive that this is the case; however, many parents and fitness coaches assume modifying an adultbased programme is good enough. It is easy to fall into the trap of desiring that your child engages in an activity that you enjoy, without thought or accommodation to the idea of what is best
for the child and how that differs at each biopsychosocial age. For example, when biological expression is considered, what are kids able to gain from the training stimulus, if anything? Is increased work capacity or power output a proper goal for a seven-year-old? We can begin moving toward what to do, and how to do it once we agree on why we need to do it. All children should exercise with a plan that is designed with their development, physiological stage, and best interests in mind.
PREPARE, PRACTICE AND PLAY
We at Activate, along with The Brand X Method, embrace this in each class with our Prepare • Practice • Play framework, which provides an easy-to-retain class structure and acts as a training roadmap. Physical skills are introduced in Prepare. Movement patterns are worked on in Practice. As kids move through our programme they learn new skills and refine movement patterns in both an age and developmentally appropriate manner. Kids then apply what they learn to movement problems presented during Play, creating their own unique movement solutions. This expanded physical capability can be defined as physical literacy, which is foundational to athleticism. We’ve all seen kids like this, those with the confidence, competence, and motivation to engage with all of the varied environments they encounter in the world. They move differently, with a distinctive rhythm and grace; they are often called “natural athletes”. The world is their playground, and they are capable of playing there for the rest of their lives, moving from one challenge to the next with freedom and fearlessness.

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS
Non-Geographic Numbers Question: What are non-geographic numbers? ANSWER: A non-geographic number (NGN) is any number beginning with 1800, 1850, 1890, 0818 or 076. NGNs are used by Irish businesses, charities and other organisations to deliver services like helplines. Calls to 1800 numbers are free. Calls to 1850, 1890, 0818 and 076 numbers cost the same as calling a landline, and are included in ‘call bundles’ that include landline calls. This means that, when you call an NGN, it is either deducted from your bundle, or charged on a per-minute basis.
WHAT IS CHANGING?
From January 1, 2022, there will only be two NGN numbers: 1800 and 0818. Organisations using 1850, 1890 or 076 numbers are now updating their contact details.
WHY ARE THE CHANGES HAPPENING?
Many people avoid calling 1850, 1890 and 076 numbers because they think they are confusing and expensive. ComReg is reducing the number of NGNs to simplify NGNs for consumers. From January 2022, there will be just two NGNs – 1800 (Freephone) and 0818 (Standard rate). This makes call costs easier to understand.
WHAT HAPPENS IF I CALL AN 1850, 1890 OR 076 NUMBER IN 2022?
From January 1, 2022, all 1850, 1890 and 076 numbers will be withdrawn from service and you will not be able to use them. You can check an organisation’s website and social media channels for their new contact details. You can also get information and advice from: The Citizens Information Phone Service: Call 0818 07 4000 (Monday to Friday, 9am to 8pm). Ring of Kerry to close to traffic at Castlecove
Motorists are being advised that the Ring of Kerry road will be closed in both directions between Caherdaniel and Castlecove for long periods of time between late November and up to March 2022.
The move is to facilitate road works at an area known locally as Brackaharagh. As a result it will not be possible to fully circumnavigate the Ring of Kerry on the dates and times the works are taking place. “It is proposed that the N70 National Secondary Road [will close] from the entrance to O’Carroll’s Cove beach, for a distance of approximately 1.3km, to a point 100m East of the junction between the N70 and Local Road L11603,” said a Kerry County Council spokesperson. The Ring of Kerry will be closed at this location from November 24 until December 22 on Monday to Friday between 9.30am to 1.30pm and from 3.30pm to
7pm, and on Saturdays from 9.30am to 3pm. It will close again on January 4 until March 16 on Monday to Friday from 9.30am to 1.30pm and from 3.30pm to 7pm, and on Saturdays from 9.30am to 3pm. “The purpose of the road closure is to facilitate the construction of the N70 Brackaharagh Road Project,” added the spokesperson. “Access will remain open for residents within the extents of the road closure and emergency vehicles. An alternative route will be clearly signposted.”

Interest in electric cars growing slowly It seems that Kerry motorists are slowly but surely embracing the electric car. So far this year 110 fully electric cars have been registered to motorists in the county. That is double the 2020 amount as 55 electric cars were sold this time last year. Volkswagen is the brand of choice, a total of 26 ID.3s and 20 ID.4s have been sold so far this year. Tesla, the first all-electric car make has sold four versions of its model 3 in Kerry since the start of 2021 – matching its todate 2020 sales. Kia (20), Nissan (12) and Hyundai (9) are
also popular amongst Kerry electric car buyers. However, diesel engine cars remain popular in Kerry, and will do so for a very long time – until there is a proper infrastructure in place to charge electric models. The top three diesel brands on their own outscore the total electric cars in the sales charts. Hyundai have old 157 diesel models in the country this year, and are followed by Ford (122), and Peugeot (119). A total of 2,172 new cars have been registered in Kerry up to the end of October – 850 of them were diesel.
ELECTRIC: Volkswagen's ID.4 is proving a hit with Kerry electric car buyers.

DAY OUT: The Burchill family, Ramona, Seanie, Dára and Cillian, from Killarney enjoying a day out at the Ballyseedy Garden Centre Hallowe'en festivities on Sunday. Photo: Joe Hanley
We Irish love the weather, for it starts most conversations, For if it didn’t rain or shine, there’d be social consternation. What would old folks talk about, when meeting on the street, For it is a great opener, when they meet and greet. ‘Luvly day’, they might say, ‘but the forecast isn’t great, I saw it on the news last night, and there’ll be rain and sleet, But they say it might pick up, on Saturday or Sunday, But then there’ll be a deluge, coming in on Monday.’ That’s the way it used to be, but now with climate change, They are concerned about the future, and all those hurricanes. They talk of fossil fuels, and cut back on burning coal, And long for turf sods from the bog, to keep out the cold. Farmers fear that crowd in Brussels, with all their new proposals, Will reduce their cattle herds, due to methane explosions. They tell them to plant more trees, because of eco terrorists, Like those cowboys in Brazil, chain-sawing rain forests. Then when we get a week of sun, they are all complaining, Griping that it’s much too hot, and they’d prefer it raining.

IN MEMORIAM
Then when the summer sunshine Awakes the flowers in bloom I’ll walk that light from heaven Around the corner of the room. Do the things we did before The same in every way Just whisper a little prayer to me At the dawn of every day. Just think of me at present Don’t think of me as past For a mother’s love is a blessing In death it still will last. Forget your troubles and your worries They are mine forever more I’ll watch and care and love you From heaven’s open door And when the road gets rough and rocky Or you’re down and need a crutch Remember I’m right beside you Just an inch too short to touch.
Thank you to all our relatives, friends, kind neighbours and Dr Crokes GAA Club for all your support and thoughtfulness. NOVENA PRAYER TO ST. THERESE O little St. Theresa of the Child Jesus, who during your short life on earth became a mirror of angelic purity, of love strong as death, and of wholehearted abandonment to God, now that you rejoice in the reward of your virtues, cast a glance of pity on me as I leave all things in your hands. Make my troubles your own- speak a word for me to our Lady Immaculate, whose flower of special love you were to that Queen of heaven “who smiled on you at the dawn of life”. Beg her as the Queen of the heart of Jesus to obtain for me by her powerful intercession, the grace I yearn for so ardently at this Novena, and that she join with it a blessing that may strengthen me during life. Defend me at the hour of death, and lead me straight on to happy eternity. Amen. C.C

I want to be with You and my loved ones in Your perpetual Glory. Amen. Promise to publish this as soon as your request is granted.)FM

Keane and co. down Spa after tense local derby After an incredibly edgy encounter that could have gone either way, Legion and Spa supporters were “treated” to a penalty shootout on Saturday – the first such shootout in the history of the Kerry Senior Football Championship. The Killarney rivals simply could not be separated after an absorbing 80-plus minutes of football in their Round 1 tie in the Fitzgerald Stadium. Two points by Jamie O’Sullivan, one from Eoghan O’Sullivan, a beauty by Will Shine and a James O’Donoghue free propelled Legion into a 5-3 lead at the first water break, but Spa found their groove thereafter. Niall McCarthy, Dara Moynihan and Mike Foley (free) pointed for the Tullig club as they shifted into their first lead of the day, and it could have been much rosier for them had David Spillane’s palmed effort struck a different part of the left-hand post. Spa had the better of the third quarter with half-time substitute Cian Tobin and Evan Cronin (two) bringing their tally to nine. Jamie O’Sullivan showed fine leadership by nailing two huge scores for Legion during this otherwise barren period, and they gathered for the second water break trailing by two (7-9). Stephen Stack’s charges needed a lift, and they got it from the biggest man in Kerry football. Super sub Pádraig Lucey found himself in space in the Spa area and when Conor Keane popped a high handpass in his direction, the 6’8” midfielder/forward swung and punched the ball into the top corner of the Spa net. Evan Cronin, who finished with 0-8 in total, levelled matters two minutes later with a free, but Conor Keane looked to have sealed the victory for Legion when he drilled over a great point in the
57th minute. There was still time for another twist, however, as Tobin equalised for Spa in the fifth minute of time added on.
EXTRA TIME
Extra time was even more intense than the 60 minutes that went before. The team from Derreen took the lead three times in the second 10-minute period with Rob Leen, Jonathan Lyne and Billy McGuire all finding the target, but they were pegged back on each occasion by Evan Cronin, Niall McCarthy, and Cronin again (also in the fifth minute of stoppage time). And so, penalties were required. And it must be said that the standard of the spot kicks was high. The pattern went like this: Conor Keane scored, Shane Lynch scored. Will Shine scored, Evan Cronin scored. Chris Davies missed, Dara Moynihan scored. Brian Kelly scored, Mike Foley missed. Darragh Lyne scored, Cian Tobin scored. With the teams tied at 4-4, the shootout went to sudden death. The responsibility to take the sixth kicks fell to the first shooters: Conor Keane and Shane Lynch. Keane wrongfooted James Devane in the Spa goal and when Lynch missed, Legion won the day. It was a cruel way for Spa to lose their first match in this competition in 10 years but when the dust settles they will reflect on a very positive year which included victory over Beaufort in the delayed 2020 Intermediate Club Championship final. They also have the O’Donoghue Cup to look forward to. They play Fossa in the quarter-final on Sunday. As for Legion, they march on to the last eight of the Kerry SFC. In a repeat of last year’s quarter-final, they take on St Brendan’s in Tralee on Saturday.

Champs rocked by Rockies | By Adam Moynihan
Stacks end East Kerry’s run on dour night in Tralee All good things must come to an end but they don’t all end as unceremoniously as this. East Kerry were nothing short of sensational over the course of their backto-back County Championship triumphs in 2019 and 2020. An All-Star team who seemed untouchable. Odds-on favourites for the rarely spotted three-in-a-row. That all came crashing down in a jarring encounter in Tralee on Saturday night as club champions Austin Stacks choked the reigning champions into submission. It must be noted that there were major mitigating factors. The loss of their Spa contingent was bound to do damage, and the lack of any meaningful preparation due to the truncated season must also be taken into account. Jerry O’Sullivan’s amalgamation had just three training sessions together, and no challenge matches, ahead of their latest title defence. At one point during their warm-up on Saturday night, they were playing a conditioned game in which players scored by carrying the ball through channels at each corner of the grid. One player appeared to be unfamiliar with the drill and carried the ball over the centre of endline, at which point the aim of the exercise had to be explained to him. It was a very minor mix-up, the type of thing that could potentially happen in any warm-up, but
it’s hard to imagine it happening to a club team before a big championship match. It perhaps goes to show how little time this group had together. However, even allowing for these factors, East Kerry’s downfall was astonishing to behold. They managed just two points in the first half, both from frees. Their first score from play was Paul O’Shea’s wondergoal in additional time at the end of the second half, by which stage the writing was on the wall. For their part, Stacks deserve huge credit for nullifying the threat of East Kerry’s star players. Dylan Casey did brilliantly on David Clifford and as a team they dropped deep and congested the area in front of Wayne Guthrie’s goal. This made it virtually impossible for East Kerry to get the ball into Clifford and Darragh Roche, while playmaker Paudie Clifford was set upon at every turn. Stacks corner back Jack O’Shea was certainly a Man of the Match contender – he kicked two points from play – and midfielder Joe O’Connor also put in another superb performance. The Kerry panelist is unstoppable on his day. On this form, he will surely be in contention for a starting berth on Jack O’Connor’s team in 2022. Although things got a little nervy fol-
lowing O’Shea’s late strike, the Tralee men held firm with their talisman Kieran Donaghy pulling down the last high ball of the night. That catch secured the result for Stacks. After dethroning East Kerry, they are now surely the team to beat.
CROKES
Dr Crokes’ passage to the last eight was relatively smooth, although they endured a shaky start as Éanna Ó Conchúir goaled for West Kerry in the very first minute. The 13-time champions settled well, however, and points by David Shaw
(three), Kieran O’Leary, Johnny Buckley, Tony Brosnan (two) and Micheál Burns had them 0-8 to 1-1 up by the half. The Killarney team’s dominance continued into the second period and further scores by Shaw, O’Leary, Buckley and Burns saw them eventually run out 0-13 to 1-3 winners. Manager Edmund O’Sullivan gave a number of young players a taste of championship action, among them starters Mark Cooper and Evan Looney and substitutes Tom Doyle, Harry Potts and Cian McMahon.
AROUND THE GROUNDS
Elsewhere, Kerins O’Rahillys had a surprisingly comprehensive victory over St Kieran’s on Saturday. Jack Savage topscored for Strand Road with 1-5 and recently retired Kerry player Tommy Walsh chipped in with 0-6 (three marks). Earlier that day, South Kerry also had a big win. They defeated Feale Rangers by 17 points in Milltown. On Sunday, Templenoe booked their place in the next round by beating Shannon Rangers, St Brendan’s got the better of Kenmare Shamrocks, and Dingle needed a late Conor Geaney goal to see off last year’s beaten finalists Mid Kerry.

A chance meeting at the World Para Athletics Championships in Dubai brought Jordan Lee and Madie Wilson-Walker together. Now, two years on, the Irish high jumper and the Canadian sprinter/long jumper are plotting international glory as a couple. Lee, who was born with one hand, and Wilson-Walker, a bilateral amputee who runs with blades, are currently training out of Killarney. This week Adam Moynihan caught up with the pair to chat about life in Kerry, dealing with the pandemic, and their Paralympic dream. AM: Madie, you’ve relocated to Ireland. Is it a stupid question to ask why? MWW: *smiles and points her thumb at Jordan, who is seated next to her* AM: How is Killarney treating you so far? MWW: I really like it. People here are really nice. The food tastes amazing - even the most simple things. Seeing all the local and family-owned little cafés around is great too, because we have some of them in Canada, but it's not a huge thing. And the views are amazing. The weather's not too bad either. I don't mind rain because it snows a lot where I'm from. AM: And you’re training with Killarney Valley. How has that been going for you? MWW: Yeah, good. We're kind of coming out of base training a little bit now. So it's starting to be more events-specific training, which is nice. But I really like the team environment that's there, and Tomás (Griffin) is obviously an amazing coach. AM: I want to talk about the future and both of your ambitions in sport, but first I’d like to take you back to the start. How did you meet? JL: We met at the World Championships in Dubai in November 2019. So, geez, two years ago, actually. I was at the track one day supporting one of my Irish teammates, and Madie just walked up the stairs and asked if she could sit beside me. And at first I was really taken aback by the confidence she had. That’s kind of how it all started. AM: Madie, what were your first impressions of Jordan? MWW: I thought he was really nice, but I found it very hard to understand his accent! I'm half deaf as well, so it was not good..
JL: You were just laughing constantly. MWW: Yeah, it was nervous laughing. It was like, “I don't know what the hell this guy's talking about”! But he was really nice, really funny. He's very comfortable to be around. AM: And how did things develop from there? JL: We were in contact with each other through social media, I suppose mainly through Snapchat. Just asking how we were both getting on after the World Championships. I kind of wanted to go on a holiday. I was speaking to Tomás and I said, “look, man, I wouldn't mind going on holiday”, because I was stressed out after the competition. He asked if I had a plan on where I wanted to go and I was like, “maybe Canada…” He said, “I called it!” He knew. I went over to Canada for a weekand-a-half and had a great time. We got up to lots of different touristy things, like Niagara Falls and going to hockey games and stuff. We said, look, we're gonna try this out and see how it goes. And as you can imagine, it was quite tricky, because then COVID happened. MWW: I was able to come here in February 2020. But then when I got home, I think we were in lockdown like three days after. AM: So, no international travel. You were separated again. How difficult was that for you both? MWW: At first, it wasn't super hard because we knew we probably would have had a few months where we didn’t see each other anyways. And then, when the travel restrictions came in, we were like, “I'll see you next month”, and then “I'll see you next month”… And then, finally, after over a year-and-a-half, we were able to reunite again. He came to Canada, and

then I came back over with him. So that was nice. But in the meantime, we just FaceTimed every day. We had a movie night over FaceTime and stuff like that. JL: It’s all coming out now!
AM: You’re back together now, here in Killarney. What was it like meeting up again after such a long time? MWW: I'm a very emotional person but I said to Jordan, “I don't think I'm gonna cry when I see you - I think I'm just gonna be happy”. And when I saw him at the airport, I was fine for about 0.2 seconds and then I start bawling crying. JL: Everyone was looking at us, I was worried they were going to think I said something to her! It was a bit strange initially when I first saw her because I hadn't seen her in a year-and-a-half - I had been speaking to and looking at her on a screen. But it has been great. It's nice to have that training partner on a consistent basis. Even being at home, when I wake up in the morning, I'm not the only person doing sit-ups! We are motivating each other to strive to be better all the time. AM: Do you train together every day? MWW: Pretty much every day. Sometimes he'll have something specific, like a high jump exercise, that I obviously won't have. But for the most part, we'll train at the same time. JL: During the winter season our training will be pretty similar anyway, because you're just trying to get into really good physical shape, just plenty of conditioning. We can do it together, which is nice. AM: Are you competitive with one an-
other, on the track and away from it? MWW: Not super competitive, trying to one-up each other or anything, but we'll definitely try to battle it out in some workouts. We cheer each other on too. If I'm starting to slow down a bit and I’m getting tired, he will encourage me. JL: Yeah, we’re competitive, but we wouldn't be doing it for our own ego. Like this morning as an example, at eight o'clock in the morning, I was just getting up and Madie was awake before me. I was chatting away, asking how her morning was. And she said, “I've already done my stretching routine, my core work and I was doing a bit of upper body, doing my push ups”. I was like, “already? I really have to up my game here”. It's funny to have that relationship with someone and they really relate 100% to what it is that you're doing. AM: Yeah, it's unique, two sportspeople in a relationship. If you experience a low in your sport, or you experience a high, the other person knows how you're feeling. Most people don't have that because they're going back to a person to whom sports is a different world. Do you find that helpful? MWW: Yeah, I find that sometimes friends who aren't necessarily at the level of athletics that we are, they'll be like, “well, just skip the workout”. We can't just skip a workout. People don't realise how much of a time commitment it really is. So, I think being able to relate on that level really helps because we know that we can't do anything until after practice, and we've done our recovery. Then we

66 can chill out. Whereas if you are with people who aren’t very understanding they might say, “what's the point of even doing that?” JL: It’s even more true for the sport that we’re in, because it's an individual event. I think I've mentioned this before in previous interviews: we can’t hide behind our teammates and let them pick up the slack for us. We can't miss a session because our partner or friends don’t understand. I think it helps massively [that we’re both athletes]. If I'm feeling a bit low after a session, or if I'm feeling a bit tired, Madie will notice that straight away. And we can help each other on that front, which is nice. AM: Do you think para-athletics is in a good place? MWW: I think it's gotten a lot larger than when I first started, and a lot more competitive too. If you look back at a couple of performances of people that were medaling back in 2012, the standards now are way up. AM: Why do you think that is? JL: I think the power of social media has really helped things. It's really showing people across the world that there is this thing called Paralympic sport and the Paralympic Games for people to take part in, and see whether or not they have some potential. It's amazing, because
5.11.2021 there's a ton of people now in my category (T47 high jump). It's so competitive to the extent that the three people who medaled this year would have won the able-bodied National Senior Championships the last five years in a row. It’s great to see and I'm delighted that the sport is growing and everybody's continuing to get better. Ultimately, that's what we all want. And we want to have that respect that we're really good professional athletes and not just really good professional, disabled athletes. AM: What does 2022 have in store for you? MWW: Definitely, for the both of us, the World Championships would be the next big competition, which is in Japan in August of next year. And then then the next Paralympic Games will be in Paris 2024. So, I think that'd be obviously a goal for both of us, because I didn't qualify for Tokyo this year. I definitely want to have a comeback season with Worlds and then hopefully make it to the Paralympic Games. After that, I just want to stay in the sport as long as my body will let me. I think we'll both be involved in sport once we retire, whether it's coaching kids with disabilities, or personal training, stuff like that. It's a really fun atmosphere to be around. AM: And Jordan, you’re coaching bas-
ketball with the Scotts Lakers. How is that going? JL: Good, yeah. There's a pretty decent vibe amongst the group. We’re trying to bring this sense of togetherness. That's something that maybe they have struggled with in previous years. And I think it's important to really bring everybody together and highlight the goal for the season ahead. We've had a bumpy enough start but we've got plenty of time to turn that around. I’m also coaching with Killarney Valley and we've got some really good up-and-coming young athletes coming through there as well. We had a fantastic season last year, and it was really only our first real season as a club considering that the track has only been built a year. In the space of the 12 months, we had 10-plus national medals, which is fantastic, especially for a small town like Killarney. The quality of coaching, not just from Tomás, myself and Madie but the other coaches as well, is top class. AM: Madie, what have you made of the facilities? MWW: The track is amazing. And the fact that Jordan and Sam (Griffin) and Tomás actually laid down the track, that's really cool. All the gyms that we've gone to are really nice too. JL: The track is a game-changer. I think it's important to have such an amazing track facility in the town because people who may have been involved in other sports might see athletics and they might want to try it knowing that there's a facility that
they can actually train on. Whereas before, if somebody was to offer a chance to another athlete to take part, they probably would have declined. Now, you can visit, you can properly physically go to a track in your hometown, try it out, see how you're getting on, and then be facilitated by really top class coaches who are versatile towards people of all abilities. It doesn’t matter if you're trying to participate in the sport at a really high standard or just taking part because you enjoy it. We've got coaches there that are very versatile. We've got a couple of members of the club who happen to have intellectual disabilities, and everybody's being treated fairly and equally, which is very important. AM: That’s great to hear. So, looking ahead to 2024, what would it mean to you both to appear side-by-side at the next Paralympics? MWW: That'd be really cool – it would be such a cool story to tell down the line, if we both ended up going. [To Jordan] And I'd be like, cheering you on and you’d be cheering me on? I feel like it would create a great atmosphere for both of us. JL: Yeah, I mean, it's kind of hard to put into words really, how cool that would be. To be at the biggest event in the entire world, to be able to call yourself an Olympian, and to do it alongside your partner. I don't think many couples can say that. So that would be really cool. That's definitely a goal that we both have. 100%.

Templenoe to test Crokes in last eight “It will be great weekend of football and some close ties. Some games may go to extra-time and shudder the thought that any game will be decided on a penalty shoot-out, the last resort. There must be a final result to each game on the day. Which team has been practising penalties?” That was the final paragraph in last week’s preview of Round 1 of the Kerry SFC. That was the fate of Spa on Saturday last. Legion beat their local rivals 5-4 on penalties after a very well contested local derby. Champions East Kerry’s bid for their third title in a row came unstuck in Tralee as Stacks prevailed in a very low scoring affair (1-7 to 1-5). That scoreline would indicate a very close affair. It was, for a brief few moments near the end. But East Kerry were never in this game. A late 1-1 flattered them in a match that Stacks dominated from start to finish. Elsewhere, a winning scoreline of 0-13 to 1-3 appears one-sided, but it took Crokes a long time to assert superiority. They won well without playing well against a very limited opposition in West Kerry. Crokes are building a new team giving senior championship debuts to Mark Cooper, David Naughton and Evan Looney. They were in from the start and can be well satisfied with their debuts.
QUARTER-FINALS
So, what of the next round? With just a
week since they last played, the team managers will be hoping that any injuries sustained will be cleared up for this weekend’s fixtures. |
Legion v St Brendan’s (Sat 7pm, Austin Stack Park)
This is a tough one for the Legion, a club team meeting a district board team. St Brendan’s did well to get over the fancied Kenmare Shamrocks in Round 1. Dominance at midfield will be crucial in this game, where the Kerry and Na Gaeil stars Diarmuid O’Connor and Jack Barry will be expected to exert superiority. Which big men will Legion play there to avert that dominance? If Legion do well here, they will expect Conor Keane, James O’Donoghue and Jamie O’Sullivan to tack on those winning scores. O’Donoghue went off injured so Legion will be hoping he has recovered. They will also look to Jonathan Lyne, Brian Kelly, Billy McGuire, Rob Leen, Chris Davies and Darragh Lyne to stifle St Brendan’s. |
Dingle v Kerins O’Rahillys (Sat 5pm, Austin Stack Park)
This looks to have the makings of the best of the weekend’s matches. Both teams came through the last round in style. Former Kerry star Tommy Walsh was excellent against St Kieran’s, winning so
much possession and scoring six points in total. Was his retirement from intercounty football premature? Dingle impressed me in Tralee. Powered by no fewer than five Geaneys - they aren’t all brothers - they had a right battle with Mid Kerry, the beaten finalists from last year. Right corner forward Conor Geaney scored the match-winning goal in the very last minute when extra time seemed certain. One must allow for the bad weather, but even so a final tally of 1-7 to 0-8 was a disappointing score. Mid Kerry missed two great goal opportunities. After 20 minutes, Cathal Moriarty’s penalty shot hit the woodwork and went over for a point instead of the expected goal. Later, Seán O’Brien was clear through on his own, but a superb save by Gavin Curran denied him the goal they needed. Conor Geaney’s superb finish was the difference. Kerry colleagues Tom O’Sullivan and Paul Geaney set up this winning score. The latter sent in a speculative shot that was misjudged by the Mid Kerry rearguard and Conor fetched a great ball before using the ciotóg to crash the ball low past Seán Coffey. The injured Gavan O’Grady did not start for Mid Kerry and his scoring potential was missed. After the Geaney goal he pointed a free. |
Templenoe v Dr Crokes (Sun 12.45pm, Fitzgerald Stadium)
Former Dr Crokes and Kerry goalkeeper Eamonn Fitzgerald previews all four of this weekend’s Kerry SFC quarter-final ties Templenoe are backboned by their four Kerry senior players and when these two teams met in the Club Championship, Templenoe shocked the Crokes with a five-point win. Two early Templenoe goals rocked the Crokes that day and they were chasing the game (unsuccessfully) thereafter. Templenoe learned nothing against a woefully weak Shannon Rangers team and will be without Killian Spillane this season. That will blunt their scoring power, but it will take a step-up in performance by Crokes to overturn the result of their last encounter in Templenoe. It will be interesting to see if Crokes will take Gavin White out of his customary centre back position to partner Johnny Buckley at midfield, releasing the towering Mark O’Shea to number 14 where he would be expected to revel in high fielding. |
Austin Stacks v South Kerry (Sun 2.45pm, Fitzgerald Stadium)
Stacks are the bookies favourites not alone to win this game but also to do the Club and County Championship double. They have a very good, disciplined defence, rarely committing fouls, and hey break at speed. Even their full back line add on the points. Their midfield is strong, but the forwards are wasteful. Still, they will have enough to outscore South Kerry.

FIXTURES: County Championship Rd 2 Killarney Legion v St Brendans Board (Sat 7pm, Austin Stack Park). RESULT: County Championship Rd 1. Killarney Legion began their County Championship campaign against local rivals Spa at Fitzgerald Stadium on Saturday evening. Spa had been expected to win this encounter by most sports pundits and it was only the slightest of margins that separated the teams by evenings end after extra-time and a penalty shootout. Legion began the game well scoring five points to Spa’s three by the first water break. On resumption Legion only scored one point being guilty of a plethora of frees, turnovers and poor finishing to allow Spa go in at half-time leading by a single point. Half-time score Spa 0-6 to Legion 0-5. The second half saw Spa extend their lead further until a much-needed goal, with a tap in for Padraig Lucey, giving Legion a one-point lead. Spa responded and the game finished level with Legion 1-8 to Spa 0-11. Extra-time was a tense, tight and scrappy affair with both sides guilty of a series of turnovers and poor play overall. Spa did well to respond

The final tally isn’t available yet as generous contributions are still coming in. Sandy Kelly and her wonderful guests Gerry Guthrie and Lorraine McDonald gave us a most memorable and enjoyable Concert. MOTORSPORT BRIEFS...
Local rallying resumes on Sunday | By Sean Moriarty Several local drivers are in action on Sunday’s Kerry Winter Rally – the first rally to run in the county since 2019. Rob Duggan and Ger Conway are the top Killarney seeds. They will debut a newly built Ford Escort on the six-stage event. New for this year is a practice stage on Saturday evening near Banna, giving crews the chance to blow off the cob-
webs after such along break. Saturday’s shakedown will be first proper drive in the car – I am looking forward to giving it a good debut in Banna,” said Duggan. Starting one car in front is Colin O’Donoghue who has contested one rally so far this year. He won the Escort Rally Special in Belgium in September. Both Duggan and O’Donoghue will have their eye on the bigger picture – the Killarney Historic Rally at the end of the month.
Colin’s father, Kevin is one of seven former winners set to start Sunday’s rally. The 2006 champion will drive his BMW M3. Another former winner is Alan Ring who will mark his second outing in a newly acquired Subaru Legacy. The rally gets under way at 930am on Sunday morning – fans traveling to Tralee from Killarney can pick up official programmes at Moriarty’s Centra in Farranfore.
