“It’s Not Just Sports Stars
- The Problem Is With Young Males In General” A week on from the acquittal of Paddy Jackson, Stuart Olding, Blane McIlroy and Rory Harrison, the nation continues to dissect the details from the hugely divisive Belfast rape trial. One of the more controversial aspects of the whole debacle is the content of the WhatsApp messages sent back and forth between the accused and their friends in the aftermath of the incident at a house party in Jackson’s home. Some of the language that was used is too vulgar to be repeated in this publication, but suffice to say it was incredibly disrespectful to the girl in question, and to women in general. Like any right-minded individual, I’m naturally appalled by what was said. The comments were pathetic. But, to be completely honest, I’m not one bit shocked by the tone of the conversations.
I’ve been added to a lot of different football and soccer teams’ WhatsApps down through the years, both at home and abroad, and I’ve also been in plenty of WhatsApp groups with other young men that had nothing to do with sports. While I’ve never witnessed anything as bad as the messages retrieved from Jackson and co.’s phones, I have seen things get fairly crude. So I think it’s wrong to say that this kind of misogyny is the domain of professional athletes. None of the worst offenders in the WhatsApp groups I’ve been in previously were entitled soccer stars, or intercounty players, they were just regular fellas, some of whom happened to play sport in their spare time. The problem isn’t just with young male sports stars. The problem is with young males in general. As public figures, athletes have more of a responsibility to behave appropri-
ately than the regular guy on the street who isn’t idolised by millions of kids. Therefore it makes sense to try and correct their behaviour. But what about the 99.9% of young men who aren’t elite athletes? If they disrespect women, is that somehow less wrong? Many observers have criticised the IRFU for not educating its players. I agree that employers certainly have a duty to educate athletes about the dangers that come with fame and fortune, but should the IRFU really have to teach its players to respect women? And, perhaps more to the point, can they? The accused in this trial behaved the way they did because they thought it was okay. And not just okay. From the way they boasted in the group, they clearly felt that this kind of behaviour is admirable. “Why are we all such legends?” Society has told them that this is how legends act. For cases like this to
become a thing of the past, society has to change. That’s obviously easier said than done. When reading the reactions in the media, one thing I noticed was the number of men who said they were disgusted by the WhatsApp messages. I don’t doubt their sincerity, but how many of them actually call out misogynistic behaviour when they encounter it themselves? How many of them simply say “yeah” and laugh awkwardly, or post a crying laughing emoji, just to avoid the awkwardness of confrontation? I have 100% been guilty of it myself. The expression, “if you’re not part of the solution, you’re part of the problem” comes to mind. I would like to think that my response will be different in the future. Changing the attitude of an entire demographic is a tall order. Changing your own, however, should be manageable enough.
“Great Friday” Turns Out To Be Just Average Judging by the furore generated by the abolition of the Good Friday drinking ban, a lot of people were expecting carnage when the day finally came around. The reality, however, was a lot less exciting. Last Friday was the first time Irish bars were officially permitted to serve alcohol in 91 years and critics of the new amendment to the Liquor Act lamented the casting aside of a longstanding religious tradition. Amidst cries of, “Can we not have one day off the beer a year?” others, myself included, hailed another
positive step towards personal freedom. To be honest, I did actually think that a lot of people might go on the lash for “Great Friday”, just for the novelty of it more than anything. From speaking to local publicans, however, predictions of a new national holiday were wide of the mark. “It was business as usual, really,” said Colm Foley of Charlie Foley’s Bar. “There was
a lot of talk that it was going to be the best day ever but there wasn’t too much of a change from a normal Friday.” I spoke to some tourists over the weekend and they couldn’t believe it when I told them it was the first Good Friday in almost a century that the bars were open. If they couldn’t go to the pub, they said, they would have been stuck in their hotel rooms for
the night. For a town so dependent on tourism, the new law is clearly good for business and good for the reputation of Killarney. So, all in all, the day seemed to go off without incident. Contrary to what certain people might think, maybe we are capable of showing some modicum of restraint. Maybe we are smart enough to make these kinds of decisions on our own, without the help of an outside body. I think the most important thing for a town like ours is that if it’s good for tourism, it’s good for all of us.

Plunkett Street Trials Continue Words: Adam Moynihan
As reported in last week’s Killarney Advertiser, Plunkett Street is currently pedestrianised on a trial basis until Monday, and will later close for ten days in May and throughout the months of July and August. The street will be closed from 7pm to 7am on an ongoing basis, and from 11am to 7am during these trial periods. Although I haven’t yet had the opportunity to speak to business owners on the street itself, the reaction of the general public so far seems to be overwhelm-
ingly positive. We haven’t reached peak season so I don’t think we’ve seen the full effect just yet, but every time I’ve walked down Plunkett Street in the past week the atmosphere has been good. Funnily enough, I’ve seen a lot of locals actually walking down the footpaths out of habit but that will obviously change as people get used to the new set-up and as the town gets progressively busier. It’s my understanding that moves to pedestrianise Plunkett Street have been met with fierce opposition - on
the grounds that it would negatively impact trade - in years gone by but I’m struggling to think of any real reason to be against it today. Back in the day, cars (which were smaller across the board) could park up outside the shops down the narrow street but that practice is a thing of the past. Nowadays, if anyone wants to call into a bar, restaurant or shop on Plunkett Street, it would make no sense to drive down there, so it’s difficult to see how pedestrianising the street would adversely affect trade.
Even when the street is closed during the day, there will remain a four-hour window (7am to 11am), ample time for deliveries to be made. I would also imagine that there will be increased footfall, which would surely lead to increased profits for the street’s proprietors. Shop Street in Galway and Oliver Plunkett Street in Cork are prime examples of popular and vibrant pedestrianised areas. It would be great to see something similar in Killarney on a permanent basis.

TOWNTALK John Celebrates The Big 7-0… By Reading His Advertiser
Gardaí Issue Helpful Advice On Bogus Tradesmen Gardaí in Killarney have urged locals to remain vigilant against the ongoing threat of bogus tradesman in the area. Sgt John O’Gorman says the main thing to keep in mind when considering hiring a cold caller to carry out work is, “why take the risk?” Whether you’ve heard of the company before or not, citizens are advised to be careful about the traders they hire. If they are curious about someone they don’t know, a simple Google search can be all it takes to find out if a business is legitimate or not. It’s also a good idea
to get as much information as possible from them, such as VAT and company registration details, and make a note of their vehicle registration, colour, make and any markings it may have. Sgt O’Gorman also recommended getting a quote in writing while adding that never, under any circumstances, should you pay cash up front. Letting people into your house should also be avoided, he said, and if you’re unsure, elderly or on your own, ask a friend or family member before agreeing to anything.
Kerry’s Best Chef

Popular Killarney man John Hegarty celebrated his 70th birthday last week but amidst all the hustle and bustle of his big party, he still found time to check out the latest edition of the Killarney Advertiser. Cynics might question whether or not this picture was staged but as John’s daughter-in-law Christine explained, it was complete-
ly by chance. “He just happened to be reading the Advertiser while he was waiting for everyone to get together for the picture,” she said. “That’s just pure John.” Family and friends gathered in the Cahernane Hotel to mark the milestone birthday and a great evening was enjoyed by all. Happy Birthday, John, from everyone at the Killarney Advertiser!
Help Brendan’s Family With Surgery Costs
Chad Byrne, Head Chef at The Brehon, has been named Kerry’s Best Chef at the Munster Finals of the Irish Restaurant Awards which took place in Cork recently. Over 500 people attended the Regional Final where the top establishments and chefs in each county were named. Also included are Sinéad McCarthy (General Manager, Brehon Hotel), Josef Rehak, Tomasz Cempa and Tadhg Crowley. Pic: Valerie O’Sullivan.
Popular Killarney man Brendan Cronin was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in June 2017 and was given 9-12 months to live. He went to America for a second opinion where doctors proposed a course of chemotherapy followed by radiotherapy in Ireland and a return trip to America to have the tumour removed. This was the only option available to him as the operation could not be done in Ireland or Europe. This wee, Brendan returned to America to undergo an operation to have the tumour removed. The operation has an estimated cost of €250,000. Brendan’s family have set up a GoFundMe and say that any donation, however small, would be greatly appreciated. This week we were delighted to invite Dylan Kelly and Simon Regan into The Chatroom to tell us all about their new venture, The Rustic Pantry. The guys have been slowly building the new business for the last year and have already made impressive inroads in the catering industry. Dylan tells us all about the different catering services they can offer, from a hot dog stand to the food truck and sitdown catering. Simon also tells us about how they were chosen to provide food
in the new GAA Centre of Excellence in Currans. The two chefs have over 40 years’ experience between them and while they were on camera Kieran thought it would be a good idea to corner them and see if they’d agree to doing some cookery demos with us in the future… We think it might have worked! Watch this space! You can watch this latest edition of The Chatroom tonight on our website www. killarneyadvertiser.ie or on our Facebook page.

The recent AGM of Killarney Town Twinning Association was held in Scotts Hotel last week. A good attendance saw Chairman Seán Counihan outline a very busy 2017. The highlight of the year was the granting of European citizen funding so the town of Pleinfeld could bring a large number of their citizens involved in organisations. The night was attended by Minister Brendan Griffin and Seán Kelly MEP and the chairman also thanked the Mayor of the Municipal Authority Niall Kelliher, Angela McAllen and Kerry County Council for their help and providing a civic welcome. Mr Counihan outlined that there was interaction between the association with seven of our twinned towns and this led to quite a lot of visitations to our town. Pleinfeld continues to grow its contact with Killarney and in April this year and again in September we will welcome two groups of thirty people, with a further trip planned for May 2019. There will be an exciting trip for
some local people as Killarney Celtic will travel to the Burgerfest in June and participate in a tournament which hopefully will grow to a festival of football in Killarney. A student exchange programme is also taking place between some students studying German in school and exchanges between rotary clubs is well under way. The chairman informed the meeting that the association is now affiliated association with Scotsdale, Arizona and Casperia near Rome. It was also confirmed that an application has been registered with the EU Citizens Programme to bring our very first twin town citizens of Castigilione to visit this year. The chair advised that funding remained a problem and thanked the group for their enthusiastic support. Dire Condition Of The Deer Strikes
It has taken a local councillor, a member of the Killarney National Park Liaison Committee, to speak out about the desperate condition of sika deer on Innisfallen Island. Cllr John Joe Culloty’s visit to Innisfallen will be memorable. At least four deer dead from starvation, the historic island’s tree bark stripped and the earth bare from food scrounging, other deer sick and starved looking. Some 27 sika, starving and emaciated it is to be assumed, had to be put down almost immediately. ‘Culled’ is the nice word used by the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht. There is a lot of outrage. One of the comments I read on the Examiner spoke of the different treatment of domestic animals and wild deer. Were these domestic animals found starving somebody would be up in court, was the gist. If Joe and Mary Soap shot a sika out of season, they too would be up in court. Yet the State have allowed the animals to starve. If it were a surprise, it would be something. However, local rangers had flagged the issue, is my understanding. Sig-
nificantly, the Wild Deer Association of Ireland issued a warning about their plight as far back as December 16, 2014 according to their records. In a general sense, I sometimes feel we think more of our dogs than we do children. And I think that Orwellian thing of ‘four legs good, two legs bad’ has gone too far entirely. Certainly there is a growing tendency to treat dogs like children, given the amount spent on pet food, car seats, vet visits, grooming parlours, exer-
cise for the dog, rights for the dog, and so on. However, there is another level, which I had not been aware of and it reminded me of a bull fight in Madrid some decades back under the full afternoon sun in the cheap seats of the famous bull ring in the Plaza de Toros de Las Ventas. The wild bull, having got a whiff of the horse where the picador sat, managed to get under the long armour to gore the horse and the audience – even the little girl eating her popcorn – were aghast. Roll on a few minutes and there was round of applause when the bull was picked, poked and finally sworded by the matador. There was plenty of music and ceremony to take one’s mind off what was really happening underneath the spectacle, even if those beside me were getting pale under their tans. The contrast in the reaction to the two animals, both obviously suffering, has never left me. It has emerged again in our lack of management of our wild deer. Some animals are more valued than others. Some animals are allowed starve. Now, if this were red deer starving on Innisfallen, would there be a bigger reaction?
Doctors Not On Call The shortage of GPs would be alarming if people had not already got used to the idea of lengthy waits for appointments. Often, and increasingly, the visits are needless because no decision will be made anyway unless you see that very expensive consultant you are referred to and so on. I spoke with a GP in a rural town a year or two ago and he told me what fascinated city medical students working with him for a stint was the decisions he made and the range of hands-on stuff he did, from stitching up to sometimes having to deliver a baby. Doctors no longer do that kind of work, let’s face it. Nurses do more and more of the hands-on stuff. Now care and nursing assistants are doing some of the stuff nurses once did. Another category below the care assistants will have to be found when the points for the care assistants course goes up. And on, and on, and on. Soon nobody will be doing anything anyway – and we may as well stick to Dr Google. I was intrigued last year to see how a rural practice in south Kerry was quite easily filled when a bureaucratic sticking plaster was removed and a Spanish doctor who was eminently qualified was allowed succeed to the post. A Hungarian doctor is shortly to fill the
Waterville position, is my understanding. Two weeks ago, I asked the HSE where they advertise GP posts. I asked if they did so in line with EU rules on works contracts, which means that public contracts for goods and services over a certain value would have to be advertised across Europe in the Official Journal of the European Union. You can still advertise in the journal even if it is under the contract price, is my understanding. The answer I got surprised me. The HSE has always argued that it advertises widely, tirelessly and “internationally” for GPs. Which I have no doubt it does. Except it is only advertising widely and tirelessly in Ireland and the UK. “What?” I asked. “You can’t be serious!” Yes. The HSE is a depressingly serious organisation. Now, I do not keep a very close eye on the UK, I have little interest in the place, but even I know there is a dire shortage of GPs all over the UK. There is a dire shortage here. Full marks for the HSE then. Meanwhile, this is the reply I got to my question on how GPs are recruited and advertised for: The purpose of our recruitment is to ensure that eligible patients in the GMS scheme receive quality general practitioner medical services. Cork Kerry Community Healthcare locally and the HSE generally are fully aware of the need
to promote and advertise all vacant permanent GMS panels both nationally and internationally. The standard practice is to place an advertisement in the Irish Medical Journal, the British Medical Journal, as well as national newspapers. If the first advertisement campaign is not successful it is repeated. And there you have it. The HSE also said the same job specification applies to all GP posts, whether the applicants are from within or outside Ireland. This ensures that all successful candidates are fully trained and experienced for the role. They went on to tell me of the general requirements, which include ability to speak English. Should an applicant meet all these requirements, be they Irish or otherwise, they would be considered for interview and appointment. The bottom line in all of this is the HSE is not advertising Europe-wide for GPs. And if it did, it might well have better luck. The question is: why isn’t it? And why arent’t GPs here encouraging such a move? Meanwhile, despite the dire warnings about all the GPs who are going to retire in the future, when we might all be dead anyway, the HSE tells me, “as of this moment” there is only one area vacant, in Waterville, Co Kerry. An appointment date of early May for the new permanent GP has been agreed.
I am partly in France when I write this. 36 days of strike by rail workers is underway. Calendars of strike days have been published in the newspapers with the strike days all coloured, so you can’t be taken short. Three days next week, two this week and so on. The French still love their newspapers. The local one where I have been is simply called “Le Journal” - “De Paper” in other words. It’s real name is much lengthier. Aside from the newspapers, there are flashing signs on motorways telling people during the strikes to consider “covoiturage”, car sharing. I did not detect any great anger against the strikers who are out against forced privatisation and cuts to their working conditions and pensions. The changes to the underfunded rail system is because of EU bureaucrats’ rules on privatising everything. Privatisation of rail, telecoms, water and vital public services has not worked anywhere. Yet the Thatcherite idea persists and is threatening France now. There is not the same resentment of public sector or semi-State workers in France as there is in Ireland, because there is not the same gulf in conditions. So there is no great anger against the strikes. People seem to accept that in France, there is something great at stake. By and large, French employees have good working conditions in both the private and public sectors. Sundays are rest days. There is a 35-hour week. There are rigorous rules about emailing or ringing an employee after work, and so on. It is not easy to fire a person. The huge tome that is the employment code is widely available. There are no real protections anymore for Irish private sector workers. And the gulf between the private and the public is insurmountable at this stage, it seems to me. Bertie and others caved in too much to the public sector unions, and protected the private too little, shifting the burden of the economy onto them. We have no real labour laws for the private sector. We have no public representatives interested in labour laws for the private sector or for the self-employed. I cannot think when any of our very well-paid TDs, senators or MEPs last paid attention to labour laws or protection of Irish private sector or self-employed workers in companies and enterprises where huge profits are being made. The only hope I see is the “market” to which we have all become slaves. This is providing a correction. Workers are not available. The cost of housing, the lack of housing, the awful commuting, the need to have to work so long to have any reasonable standard of living, the lack of protection are all combining, and jobs are increasingly difficult to fill.

Cartell.ie Killarney Rally of the Lakes Killarney & District Motor Club, organisers of the Cartell.ie Rally of the Lakes, have announced details of this year’s event which will take place over the May bank holiday weekend (May 4–6). The Rally of the Lakes is one of the largest sporting events in Killarney attracting visitors and crews from all corners of the country. The event is the highlight of the Irish rallying calendar and is counted as rounds of the Irish Tarmac Rally Championship, PlasticBags.ie Southern 4 Rally Championship and the Kingdom of Kerry Rally Championship. This year the event celebrates its 40th Anniversary with Killarney businessman Dermot Healy taking on the role of COC for his sixth year. Dermot, who is very much known in the town of Killarney for his incredible voluntary and charity work, has put together a strong organising committee and operations are well under way. “The demanding, technical and challenging route stages are the most famous classic route of stages available and these stages should test each competitor to their full ability,” Dermot explained. “While also maintaining the unique classic stages that the Rally of the Lakes is renowned for worldwide, our main aim is to bring the Rally back in and around the Killarney town area and we have achieved this with our Sunday loop of stages.” Once again for their ninth consecutive year Ireland’s leading vehicle history record company
Cartell.ie returns as the main title sponsor of the Rally of the Lakes 2018. Additional backing will be provided by the Killarney Advertiser, Ordnance Survey Ireland and the Gleneagle Hotel Group, who have been supporters of the Rally of the Lakes for many years and continue as associate sponsors. The Rally of the Lakes is firmly established as one of Ireland’s premier rally events and it gives a major boost to the businesses of the town and the local economy. TV coverage alone is beamed to 38 countries with an estimated 30 million household subscribers. Dermot remarked: “This exposure is fantastic for Killarney and the Rally of the Lakes and it hugely increases our attraction as an international event for competitors and spectators to enjoy”. Features of this year’s event include: • Official Rally Launch on Sunday, April 15 at the Brehon Hotel • Total of 16 of Ireland’s classic stages such as: Molls Gap, Beallaghbeama, Cods Head & Ardgroom • 240 km of stage competition • Centralised service each day The three-day event will begin with a ceremonial start in Killarney’s town centre at 7pm on Friday, May 4. Plans are at an advanced stage to create a motor-
sport festival on the streets of Ireland’s most famous town. The real action will commence early on Saturday morning with the iconic Molls Gap, followed by the Tim Healy Pass and centralised service in Castletownbere Pier. Then it’s time to head out on the famous stages of Cods Head and Ardgroom with a repeat run over the Healy Pass and into service for a well-deserved break. Cods Head and Ardgroom are repeated and a blast through the Kilmakilloge harbour stage to finish off the day. Sunday Morning starts with Molls Gap once again, followed by the mountainous Beallaghbeama Pass, then into service at Liebherr Container cranes in Killarney. This loop of Molls Gap and Beallaghbeama Pass is repeated with the inclusion of a new version of the fast-flowing Shanera stage called Brook Hill. It’s into service once again before heading out to the spectator friendly loop of Rossanean, Brook Hill and Rossanean again as the final stage. The crews will arrive back to the finishing ramp at the Rally Headquarters, The Gleneagle Hotel, at 5.30pm for celebrations and champagne. The May bank holiday weekend is near and the Cartell.ie Rally of the Lakes is the place to be.

Big Coffee Morning for Children’s Hospital It’s all hands on deck in the Killarney Royal Hotel as they prepare to cater for the now annual coffee morning on Saturday April 7, which this year is in aid of Crumlin Children’s Hospital (CMRF Crumlin). The BIG Coffee Morning, hosted by Ann Marie O’Leary and Tara O’Donoghue is now in its third year and has supported MS Ireland South Kerry branch for the previous two years. “It’s great to be supporting good causes and we are aware that there are many Killarney and indeed Kerry families who have benefited from the medical expertise and care that Crumlin Children’s Hospital provides on an ongoing basis,” explained Ann Marie. “We are just glad to acknowledge the good work they do and contribute financially to their ongoing efforts.” The coffee morning promises to be full of home-made treats and goodies that will be difficult to resist and this, alongside the traditional teas and coffees, will undoubtedly make for a great morning at the Killar-
ney Royal Hotel. Tara went on to praise those that support the event annually. “We are so grateful for all those who bake and provide confectionary items for the morning and we would like to thank in particular the Killarney Royal Hotel and their staff for hosting the event,” she said. “Of course, the morning is only successful if people come out and support the cause, which they have in the previous two years, and we are so thankful for this support.” One of the big draws on the morning is the raffle which boasts a formidable array of prizes, all sponsored by local businesses. “The local businesses have been so generous with sponsorship of prizes for the raffle each year and we are delighted that this year is no exception with a great variety of prizes to be won,” Ann Marie added. Both Ann Marie and Tara are hoping for a big turnout to support this great cause. The BIG Coffee morning is due to run from 10am–12pm in the Killarney Royal Hotel on April 7.
Now that the Easter break have arrived for students throughout the county, Killarney Credit Union has begun a membership drive for younger members and their parents/guardians to call into the Credit Union offices and open an account during the holidays. Karena McCarthy, Marketing Officer, Killarney Credit Union said: “Junior members are vitally important to the future of the Credit Union and we are encouraging younger members and their parents to call in while they’re off over Easter and join up. Junior membership is open from new born to 15 years and all junior members get a gift pack.” The Credit Union operates a successful school savings scheme in primary schools throughout Killarney and Kenmare that sees staff calling each week to collect savings from the participating students. As an extra incentive,
junior members that save for 6 weeks after Easter are entered into a draw to win a tablet, bike and vouchers. “27% of our members are aged under 16 and we hope that many new junior members will join up over the holidays,” Karena added. “Learning about saving and being a regular saver is a great skill to learn at a young age and sets them up for the future”. The following documentation is required to open a Junior Account, a passport/birth cert is needed for the child, proof of child’s PPS and parents/guardians are also asked to provide recent photo, address ID such as a passport/driver’s license and a recent utility bill. Junior Membership accounts can be opened at the Credit Union branches at Beech Road, Park Road and in Kenmare. For more information, visit www.killarneycu.ie.

John Kelly Remembered At Retired Nurses AGM
At a well-attended AGM of the Retired Nurses Association Kerry Branch held recently in the Killarney Court Hotel the following officers were elected: • Chair: Ned Brosnan • Vice-Chair: Denis O’Donoghue • Secretary: Nora Moynihan, • Assistant Secretary: Maureen Young • Treasurer: John Rice • Assistant Treasurer: Dan Dwyer • PRO: Neil O’Sullivan The guest speaker at the meeting was the crime prevention officer of the Kerry Division of An Garda Siochána, James Foley, who delivered an excellent presentation on personal and home security. The past year was very successful for the branch with many new members joining the association. There was also much praise for the social activities programme which was organized by the very vibrant activities sub-committee and a similar programme will be planned for the year ahead. During the
past year the branch was saddened at the passing of a number of long-standing and faithful members and votes of sympathy were passed to the respective families of the deceased. A special tribute was paid to the recently deceased PRO John Kelly RIP. John had given outstanding service to the association over the past 17 years and there was general agreement that his untimely death leaves a void in the branch that cannot be filled. N
DEFAMATION AND SOCIAL MEDIA
ever before has the topic of defamation been discussed so widely. The Defamation Act, 2009, defines defamation as consisting of the publication by any means of a defamatory statement concerning a person to one or more than one person (other than the first mentioned person) and defamation shall be construed accordingly. Defamation may often have been considered to be a matter concerning what is printed in newspapers and magazines or what is said on television and radio. However, with the use of Social Media, this is an issue which can potentially affect ordinary people in their ordinary lives. Comments that are made on Social Media such as on Twitter, Facebook etc can potentially clearly fall within the definition of “publication by any means”. There is no general exemption or defence when comments are made on Social Media which
l a c i d e m s s o rthe reeks | killarney

are defamatory. Clearly, the author of any such comments can be liable in the event that what is stated defamed a third party. While the 2009 does provide various defences to a defamation action, it is clear that the use of Social Media to make certain statements or utterances would be deemed to be publication for the purposes of the Act. The above is a discussion piece only and does not purport to be legal advice and should not be relied upon as such. In respect of any specific circumstances, you should consult your solicitor to obtain specific legal advice and Terence F. Music The annual table quiz in aid of the Kenya Education Project takes place next Thursday night, April 12 in the Castlerosse Hotel at 8.30pm. Tables of four are available for €40 while juvenile tables are €20 each. The Project helps young people in the slum village of Embulbul, Nairobi. At present 100 young people are sponsored to complete their primary and secondary education as their own family circumstances make it very difficult to meet the cost of books, uniforms and fees. This is the highest number ever of students sponsored by the Kenya Education Project. Some past pupils of the school are also helped to continue their education and training by paying college fees as well as travel and subsistence allowences. To date the project has helped students to obtain training in childcare, secretarial, computing, journalism and social work which is a major boost to their families in their dream of obtaining a job to ease
the financial burden on their families. In recent years the Project has increased its work with families in the village through the local branch of SVDP. Needy families have received beds, blankets and household utensils to help ease the burden of poverty. Also the village feeding programme provides a hot meal each weekday evening for 100 needy children from the village. The Kenya Project helps to offset some of the costs of these monthly food bills for the parish. The project continues to support sporting activities in the school and village by providing playing gear, footballs and training equipment to those involved in soccer, basketball and volleyball. The support the Project continues to receive each year from the people of Killarney is encouraging and heartening and enables many young people to be helped and supported. All involved would like to everybody who has supported the Project to date.
Saturdays Star Una To Play INEC There was great news for local music fans this week as Tipperary singer/songwriter Una Healy was confirmed for an INEC show on Friday, June 15. Healy, a Thurles native, shot to global fame as part of all-girl group The Saturdays in 2008 and having achieved a huge amount of success with the pop sensations, she is now going it alone on her first ever solo headline tour. Her single Never See Me Cry was released last week to widespread acclaim. Co-written by Una with Nick Atkinson and Edd Holloway, Una explains: “I wrote Never See Me Cry as an empowerment anthem for anybody who’s ever had someone walk all over them. It’s a big ‘F you’ to a lover, a boss or a friend that’s ever made you feel
small or worthless. It’s a fight song for everyone out there who is sick of being dominated - the tides are turning out there and it’s clear that it’s our time to take back control.”

Teachers Demand Equal Pay At INTO Conference The divisive issue of pay was very much centre stage as the Irish National Teachers Organisation (INTO) met this week at the INEC. Around 850 representatives came to Killarney for the conference where they asked the government to address the pay disparity that exists within the sector. Teachers hired since 2010 are on a lower pay scale which means that over a 40-year career they will earn €100,000 less than their longer-serving colleagues. “They are not being given equal pay for equal work – so that is going to be the dominant focus,” said organisation president John Boyle. On Wednesday the Minister for Education, Richard Bruton, said that the Government is committed to making progress on the issue of equal pay for teachers. As Mr Bruton spoke about digital technolo-
gy, he was heckled by some delegates who called out, “What about equal pay?” INTO President John Boyle politely reminded the dissenters that there was a long tradition of welcoming the minister despite their differences. Mr Bruton acknowledged that the union had a “justifiable” demand for pay, which was greeted with applause. He highlighted the 75% pay restoration and reduction in contracts for indefinite duration from four to two years, and said these were real improvements. The minister told the congress that discussions on new entrant pay across all sectors of the public service will start on April 27. INTO General Secretary Sheila Nunan later told the conference that partial equality was not equality and there was no such thing as a “little bit equal”.

A Weekly Round-Up Of News + Views From Kerry And Around
Israel Ask AIB To Close Accounts Of Palestinian Protest Groups An Israeli minister has called on AIB to close the Irish accounts of Palestinian protest groups. The Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign (IPSC) said it was shocked to learn that Israel’s Minister for Strategic Affairs, Gilad Erdan, directly appealed to AIB to close the Irish accounts of those who are lobbying to boycott Israeli goods. Many of those accounts belong to the IPSC who said it was appalled to learn that the Israeli government was openly talking about putting pressure on AIB to shut the accounts.
In a statement to the Jerusalem Post, Gilad Erdan said: “I call on Allied Irish Banks to join the many institutions, leaders and citizens who are uniting to reject the discriminatory and antisemitic boycott movement against Israel, including by disassociating itself from any BDS-linked accounts.” The same paper said that Ireland is considered one of the most hostile nations to Israel in western Europe. BDS stands for boycott, divestment and sanctions. It is a movement which works to end international support for Israel.
Saudi Cinemas To Re-Open After 35 Years Saudi Arabia’s first cinema in more than 35 years will open on April 18, showing the action movie Black Panther. It is part of a deal made with the world’s biggest cinema chain, AMC, to open up to 40 cinemas in some 15 Saudi cities over the next five years. The past year has seen the start of a huge
drive to bring entertainment to Saudi Arabia as part of Vision 2030. That is the ambitious plan for economic and social reform by the Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. The conservative Muslim kingdom had cinemas in the 1970s, but they were closed at the behest of hardline Islamic clerics.

Trump Continues To Attack Online Retailer Amazon Yesterday, President Donald Trump tweeted another attack on Amazon - his fifth in a week - this time focusing his criticism on The Washington Post, which is owned by the online retailer’s CEO, Jeff Bezos. “The Fake News Washington Post, Amazon’s ‘chief lobbyist,’ has another (of many) phony headlines,” the president tweeted, criticizing the newspaper’s coverage of the U.S. trade standoff with China. Trump’s tweet was aimed at an article in the Thursday morning edition of the Post, which said that the president “showed no sign” of backing down during trade tensions with China. Amazon stock was up 2% in early trading yesterday.

The president’s tweet repeated his false claim that the Post acts as a “lobbyist” for Amazon. The newspaper’s management has repeatedly denied that Bezos influences editorial strategy and coverage. Trump has been teeing off on Amazon, claiming that it is taking advantage of its deal with the U.S. Postal Service to hurt brick-andmortar retailers. “You have retailers all over the United States that are going out of business,” Trump said Tuesday. “If you look at the cost that we’re subsidizing, we’re giving a subsidy to Amazon.” Several observers, however, have argued that USPS partnership with Amazon has been positive for the delivery service, which loses money due in large part to mandated pension prepayments.
Alleged German Fraudster Made €1m By “Recycling” Bottles
A 27-year-old man has been charged on two counts of fraud after making over a million euros by illegally manipulating a bottle deposit machine in his shop. Artur K. faces a court in Bochum this week, after he was accused of defrauding the German Deposit Society (DPG) out of of €1.2 million. The 27-year-old shop manager is said to have illegally manipulated two bottle deposit machines in his shop. Deposit machines allow customers to return empty bottles and cans, and claim back a small amount of money from their purchase.
When a bottle is inserted, the machine crushes and records the item. The vendors are then able to claim back money from providers, based on the the data stored in the machine. Artur K. is accused of manipulating the machines into not crushing the bottles, allowing him to retrieve and insert the same bottle multiple times, Der Westen reported. This allowed him to claim significantly higher sums than he would otherwise have been able to from the DPG. If he is found guilty, he could face up to 15 years in prison.

An Post Unveil King 45k Irish Facebook Users Affected And Mandela Stamps By Cambridge Analytica Scandal
An Post have issued two stamps in recognition of the life and achievements of Dr Martin Luther King Jr and Nelson Mandela. The two Nobel Peace prize-winners’ stamps are intended for international mail and will be made available from main post offices, stamp counters at Dublin’s GPO and online. Designed by Dublin-based de-
sign studio Aad, the stamps depict King during the famous civil rights march on Washington, and Mandela in Soweto in September 1990. The stamps featuring King and Mandela, which come under the title of International Statesmen, were released yesterday, a day after the 50th anniversary of Dr King’s assassination.
Rapper Skepta Made A Chief In Nigeria
English grime rapper Skepta has been made a chief in his parents’ home state of Ogun in Nigeria. The MC has been in Nigeria for a homecoming concert, at which the likes of J Hus, Not3s, Wizkid and Davido have been invited to perform. His chieftaincy title is ‘Amulu-
dun of Odo Aje’, which literally means the ‘Chief Entertainer of Odo Aje’. “I am honoured and will continue to put time and love into Nigeria, especially the community of Odo Aje,” Skepta, who was born in north London, said.
Some voters were so disillusioned with the Egyptian presidential elections that they spoiled their ballot papers by voting for Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah. Salah is a talismanic figure in his homeland after firing them to the 2018 World Cup, but he was obviously not among the candidates for Egypt’s top job. State media reported that Ab-
del Fattah el-Sisi had secured over 97% – but the election has been branded ‘farcical’ after five challengers were blocked from joining the ballot. And according to a report in The Economist, more than one million voters spoiled their ballots – with some scribbling both candidates’ names out and writing Salah’s name instead.
Up to 45,000 Irish Facebook profiles may have been affected by the Cambridge Analytica data breach. Last night, the company revealed that the number of profiles affected by the mass data scrape is more likely closer to 87 million than the 50 million originally mooted. Of that number, as many as 44,687 Irish profiles may have been affected as a consequence of just 15 Irish people installing the thisisyourdigitallife app which provided the gateway to the initial data breach. “Our investigation shows that the people impacted were predominantly in the United States – 97.1% of users who installed the app are understood to have
been primarily in the US, while 81.2% of total affected people, i.e. installers and their friends, were in the US,” the company said in a statement. However, we do know that 15 people in Ireland installed thisisyourdigitallife, and up to 44,687 people in Ireland may have been friends with someone who installed the app, and, therefore, may have been affected. This represents 0.0516% of the total number of people affected. Last night, the company’s co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg said he remains the best person to lead the social network despite acknowledging mistakes in underestimating abuse of the platform.
Warm Weather Forecast For This Weekend (But So Is Heavy Rain)
Egyptians Vote For Salah In Presidential Election
Temperatures in Ireland are expected to rise as high as 14 degrees Celsius this weekend, matching those in the Mediterranean city of Barcelona. This is well above the average for April (8 degrees) and Met Éireann say it is a result of warm air coming our way from Spain. But don’t go digging out your swimsuit and
bucket and spade just yet; in typical Irish fashion, the milder weather is also expected to bring heavy rainfall with a an official weather warning in place in Kerry, Cork, Limerick, Tipperary, Waterford, Carlow, Kilkenny and Wexford until this evening, and further rainfall is forecast for Saturday and Sunday.

Gary Lightbody, lead singer and songwriter, said “‘Don’t Give In’ was originally about a friend going through a tough time but the more I wrote
into it I realized it was about me and the struggle of making the album—which took 5 years and was not easy—coupled with the struggle with depression I’ve had since I was a kid, so it has become the talisman of the album. Fly Fishing
1. Paris, France
Everyone who visits Paris for the first time probably has the same punchlist of major attractions to hit: The Louvre, Notre Dame, The Eiffel Tower, etc. Just make sure you leave some time to wander the city’s grand boulevards and eat in as many cafes, bistros and brasseries as possible. And don’t forget the shopping—whether your tastes run to Louis Vuitton or Les Puces (the flea market), you can find it here.
2. London, United Kingdom
The launch of the 31st Annual Charity Lough Lein Anglers Fly Fishing Competition on the shores of Lough Lein, which will be held on Sunday, April 22. This year’s chosen beneficiaries are Acquired Brain Injury Ireland and Irish Pilgrimage Trust. Futsal
There’s so much to see and do in London, it’s easy to be overwhelmed. Major sights like the Tower of London and Buckingham Palace are on most visitors’ itineraries, but no matter what your interests, you’ll probably find something here. Art lovers should make a beeline for the National Gallery and the Tate Modern. If military history’s your thing, don’t miss the Cabinet War Rooms. Finally, forget everything you’ve heard about bland, mushy British food—the restaurant scene here is fabulous.
3. Rome, Italy Glenflesk U-15 Community Games Futsal team who won gold medals in Duagh recently. Front: Evan Lucey, Dylan Roche, Eoghan Kelly, John Kelliher. Back: Kevin Bowler, Killian O’Sullivan, Jack O’Donoghue and (missing from photograph) Michael Mullane.
It’s nicknamed the Eternal City for a reason. In Rome, you can drink from a street fountain fed by an ancient aqueduct. Or see the same profile on a statue in the Capitoline Museum and the guy making your cappuccino. (Which, of course, you know never to order after 11 am.) Rome is also a city of contrasts—what other place on earth could be home to both the Vatican and La Dolce Vita?
4. Bali, Indonesia
Bali is a living postcard, an Indonesian paradise that feels like a fantasy. Soak up the sun on a stretch of fine white sand, or commune with the tropical creatures as you dive along coral ridges or the colorful wreck of a WWII war ship. On shore, the lush jungle shelters stone temples and mischievous monkeys. The “artistic capital” of Ubud is the perfect place to see a cultural dance performance, take a batik or silver-smithing workshop, or invigorate your mind and body in a yoga class.
5. Crete, Greece
Crete is the largest of the Greek islands and is a paradise for tourists seeking sunshine, beaches, and culture. Chania lies on the northern coast of Crete. It’s the second largest city on the island and is served by an airport. Upon arrival, hire a car and drive the 30 kilometres up to the White Mountains. This beautiful setting is perfect for relaxing or doing a spot of walking and is also a good base to explore the region’s attractions. Chania is an old harbour town with a medieval heart and is worth checking out. The seafront quarter includes a little mosque which is a remnant from the 17th century when the Turks controlled the area. These days the mosque’s been converted into a very nice art gallery. Make sure you also check out the Archeological Museum which is full of Minoan artifacts, including a glass display packed with pottery bulls.

Recipe of the Week by Head Chef Jamie Cronin of The Heights Hotel
Vegan Meringue Cookies Recipe
RECIPE
Something I have made a lot in my time here at The Heights, it’s nice to make a little extra effort for vegans for Weddings and parties so we make these Vegan Meringues, made with the liquid off of chickpeas, and turn them into an amazing “Eton Mess” with Coconut Cream and Passion Fruit.
Method • Line a baking tray with a fresh sheet of baking paper • In a large, clean bowl beat chickpea water with an electric whisk or use a stand mixer until you get stiff peaks. • Add ½ tsp of vinegar to stabilize the mix it isn’t absolutely necessary • To test if whipped chickpea water is ready, gently turn the bowl upside down. If the mixture does not start sliding
•120ml aquafaba/ chickpea brine, chilled •½ tsp white wine vinegar •125 g caster sugar
down, you can start adding sugar. Otherwise, keep on whipping until the mixture stays in the bowl when upside down • Start adding sugar very slowly, tablespoon by tablespoon, whipping well after each addition. Continue until all the sugar has been added. By now, the mixture should become beautifully glossy, thick and sticky – no different to an egg-based meringue, really. • Pre-heat the oven to 100º C / 210º F.
• Add mixture to piping bag and pipe your mixture in 3cm circles • Bake for about 75 minutes, then turn the oven off but leave the tray with meringue drops inside with the oven door slightly open for another 45-60 minutes for the meringues to dry out fully. • Keep the meringues in an airtight container. Please note that the exact baking time depends on the size of your meringues so if you are going for a larger size, be sure to adjust baking time
Have You Tried Ear Candling? Hopi Ear Candling can help to: • Remove excessive or compacted wax in the ears • Ease irritation in ears and sinuses • Open up nasal breathing • Help pressure regulation and pain in cases of: sinusitis, rhinitis, glue ear, colds, flu, headaches, migraine • Stimulate energy points and reflex zones • Intensify immune system activity and lymphatic circulation • Energetic re-vitalization in cases of hearing impairment • Promote relaxation and have calming effect in cases of stress • Ease noises in the ears, ringing, tinnitus What to Expect Following an initial consultation, you will be asked to lie on your side on a comfortable couch. The therapist gently and carefully inserts a candle into the ear opening. The candle will be lit and the essential oils from it infuse
into the ear. A low-level vacuum generated will draw earwax and other loose matter out of the ear cavity and into the end of the hollow candle. You will experience a pleasant crackling sound as the candle burns and a warm comfortable feeling. When the ear candling procedure is complete, a waxy substance is normally left inside the base of the candle. Nothing is removed from the ear during the treatment but some may find a slight discharge from the ear afterwards as compacted ear wax may become lose and drain away. The practitioner will follow up with a lymphatic drainage around the lymph nodes of the neck and face and finish by grounding the client with a foot massage. This therapy is not suitable for people that have had recent ear surgery, or for those with ear grommets or perforated eardrums. It is also unsuitable if the client has any inflammation to the ear or infections.
Is Your Home Concrete Built? PROPERTY OVERVIEW - For Sale by Private Treaty Overall Floor Area: 120.8 Sq. Metres (1,300 Sq. Feet)
4 Bruach Na hAbhann, Killarney PROPERTY DESCRIPTION: Excellent investment or family home containing 3/4 bedrooms, kitchen/dining area, utility, bathroom, living room and wchb. Ideal location a short distance from Killarney town centre. FEATURES: So you’re buying a new home! There are so many things to consider when purchasing a new home. Location, size, access to local amenities and obviously price are sure to be to the forefront of your mind. All of these issues are indeed very important. However features such as the strength, durability, fire-safety, noise resilience, flood resilience and adaptability of your new home are of equal importance. All of these characteristics relate to the basic structure or fabric of your new home. Sometimes these considerations are taken for granted or even forgotten until it is too late. Houses with a fully concrete structure
or fabric have major advantages over alternative lightweight construction. Concrete does not burn, rust, warp, rot or melt and its heavyweight nature gives it excellent sound resistance and energy conserving properties. These characteristics are naturally ‘builtin’ in concrete. This is why the vast majority of houses and apartments in Ireland have been constructed with a fully concrete structure. You will have many questions to ask when viewing your potential new home. Questions about its structure or fabric should be added to your list. So next time, be sure to also ask if the home you are viewing a fully concrete built home.

Garden Magic
Leaving Things Late & Starting Too Early
There are two types of gardeners: those who leave things ‘til it is almost too late, and those who start things too early. I am in the first category. Even though I know it is almost too late, I am still pruning… Roses need to be tidied up by now. If they are not, use this weekend as your cut-off point! It is, however, the perfect time for coppicing plants grown for winter stems such as willows and dogwoods. Another job I am leaving late is planting summer bulbs, such as dahlias and begonias. They really should be sprouting by now but unfortunately mine still languish in the packets. This is obviously not best practice! In fact, what should be my concern is that their shoots are being eaten by slugs. Yes, slugs are out in force again this year, and from what I can observe the cold weather did nothing to curtail their numbers. Slug pellets are the preferred choice for most gardeners but laying a plank of wood on the ground for them to hide under will catch you a lot of the little pests at once. Now let us talk about the other type of gardener: the one who starts things too early. Mowing for instance. Don’t be tempted to mow the lawn too early, as you could damage it, especially if the ground is wet. If you do mow, take just the tips of the grass off
the first time! Rake out moss and if you are using sulphate of iron, do it this month. If moss is a big problem in your lawn, buying a soil pH tester kit could be a good investment. They are just a few euro, simple to use, and will tell you if your soil is perhaps too acidic. Ideal growing pH for lawn is 6.5-7, on the slightly acidic side, but due to using products such as sulphate of iron, a lot of lawns around Killarney have a much higher pH - which moss loves. Lowering the pH is easy enough, just add some lime! It is also much too early for geraniums, busy lizzies, petunias etc. I see them for sale already and, no matter what anyone tells you, it is TOO EARLY FOR SUMMER BEDDING!!! By all means grow them in a glasshouse or tunnel to have them ready, but May is the month for summer pots and baskets. In the meantime, many plants are being forced on by commercial growers, not just summer bedding but also alpines and shrubs. The drawback of this is that even though these plants are hardy enough and will withstand the cold, they are forced to such an extent that the plant itself is quite weak and may not thrive. A good rule of thumb when buying plants is if it is not in flower in your neighbour’s garden, it should not be in flower in the garden centre!

Meeke & Nagle Could Challenge At Rally Corsica Words: Cormac Casey Kris Meeke and Paul Nagle are on the Mediterranean island of Corsica this weekend for the fourth round of the World Rally Championship. The Citroen pairing are lying fourth in the championship table on 32 points with championship leader Sebastian Ogier 24 points ahead. A win is the difference. The Citroen crew will be hoping for better fortune than last year. Meeke and Nagle had a healthy lead on the French island’s asphalt stages when the engine in their Citroen blew up, putting them out of the event. Their pace up to that point was unmatched. Last year’s pace has confidence high going into this weekend and there is no reason to think that the Citroen crew won’t be on the podium. A strong finish here will keep them in the fight for the championship. Nine-time world champion Sebastian Loeb will partner Meeke and Nagle again this weekend at the expense of Waterford driver Craig Breen. Loeb is taking Breen’s seat for three events this season. Loeb almost had a fairytale comeback in Mexico last time out only for a puncture to rob him of victory on day two. Loeb is an asphalt specialist and this weekend will suit the Frenchman on what is considered a home event. Fellow Frenchman Sebastian Ogier and Belgian’s Thierry Neuville will be in the mix on this surface. It has all the makings for an exciting event.

April Fool’s: Car Companies Join In The Fun The car industry, never one to miss out on a good PR opportunity, has always capitalised on April Fool’s Day with some very fun gags. Here are a few of the best from 2018.
SEAT ARONA COPPER EDITION We have too many pennies around, says Seat – so why not put them to good use? That’s the thinking behind the new Arona Copper Edition, which adds a coin slot to the compact crossover, making it ideal for the thrifty petrolhead. The Spanish manufacturer points to a reported proposal by the UK Treasury to scrap the 1p and 2p pieces, which would leave the country with more than 15 billion redundant coins. ‘Seat has found a way to keep these soon-to-be historical artefacts motoring on for years to come,’ it says. (The prime minister’s spokesman rapidly denied there were such proposals.)
MG’S ALPACA-POWERED CROSSOVER
ASTON MARTIN PROJECT SPARTA
With the pushback against diesel fuel, what alternatives are there to power the millions of cars on British roads? Petrol and electricity are both sound options, but MG thinks it has the answer: alpaca dung. Daniel Gregorious, head of sales and marketing at MG UK, said: ‘We look forward to the day when people resign horsepower to the history books and refer to alpaca power. It really packs a punch.’
Aston Martin’s motorsport division is branching out, fielding a challenger in a sport it’s never attempted before. Codenamed Project Sparta, it’s a radical direction for the company to take – who would have associated Aston Martin with monster truck racing? Fitted with a 6.5-litre naturally aspirated V12 engine, it will produce 1,100bhp and go head to head with some of the most famous trucks out there, such as Grave Digger, Big Kahuna and Jailbird.
• Haas driver Romain Grosjean says describing the team as a “Ferrari B team” is insulting to their engineers. • Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton claims Ferrari’s pace was better than it appeared at the season-opening race in Australia. • Red Bull driver Daniel Ricciardo believes the width of modern F1 cars is making overtaking more difficult. • Toro Rosso driver Pierre Gasly says Honda has a “big, big plan” for development in 2018 that is designed to “show everyone they can do proper engines” in Formula 1. • Haas boss Guenther Steiner is sure his team can prevent a repeat of the pit-stop mistakes which ruined their Australian Grand Prix and push for a good points haul in Bahrain.
Rolls-Royce Cullinan: Final Challenge - Episode 1 Development of the Cullinan, the first SUV from RollsRoyce, nearing its conclusion ahead of the car’s global debut later in 2018, the maker has teamed up with National Geographic and adventure photographer Cory Richards to get extra mileage out of the final series of durability tests. As the Cullinan test mule tackles a series of of punishing terrains and altitude changes in the Highlands of Scotland, the gigantic dunes of the Arabian Desert, and the toughest landscapes in the United States, they’ll be publishing a series of videos by Richards entitled the final challenge, featuring the spectacular scenery and special people he meets along the way.
Whatever goes wrong - and something always does on an epic series of challenges such as this - it’ll all happen right in the public eye, and you’ll be able to see it here, starting right now.

I suppose Geeha would have been hoping to keep it tight early on but luckily we managed to score twice in the first ten minutes and we were always in the driving seat from that point on. Seán Cournane got the first with good volley and Will Courtney added a second shortly after. When Will got his third, a header from a Tony Brosnan cross, we were in a reasonably comfortable position. Geeha finished the half in the ascendancy, though, and probably deserved a goal for their efforts. I think our month off was showing a bit but we saw it out to go in 3-0 up at the break. Geeha were awarded a dubious enough penalty for handball early in the second half and, just as he did in the league game, Chris Egan duly tucked it away. It wasn’t a big deal in the grand scheme of things but the ref never blew his whistle, which was a bit unfair on Brendan Kealy I thought. Actually, I think taking a penalty before the whistle is blown is a bookable offence in certain circumstances so hopefully the league have a look at it and retrospectively give Chris a yellow card. (I’m joking.) Mike Milner got our fourth with a precise header and Shane Lynch completed the scoring with a volley from close range. Another handy one for Lynch. Incidentally, the game was delayed by 50 minutes because no ref showed up. I don’t know whose fault it was but it’s not the first time this has happened to us. In fact, it actually happened in our cup quarter final with Celtic last year. It’s really frustrating for both teams. You do your warm-up and you’re ready to go and next thing you’re hanging around for around an hour. It’s a joke to be honest. If it happened at an under 14 game up in Derreen or Lewis Road there’d be uproar. In fairness to the ref who showed up, it wasn’t down to him. He was just filling in.
Celtic’s game against Dingle was initially reschedtake care of you. You get personalised gym prouled for Wednesday due to a waterlogged pitch grammes, you get gear, you get fed, you get a lot but Dingle conceded the game on Tuesday, which more attention… Meanwhile, we had to pay a fiver is another joke. One of the best teams in the counat the gate going into our own final in Tralee last ty effectively pulling out of the cup? They seem to year. I suppose a lot of people will say that the money be struggling for numbers but not being able to field a team for a cup game against one of your isn’t there because the interest isn’t there and biggest rivals is madness. We’re playing them in an I know soccer will always be the poor cousin of important league match on Sunday so it’ll be infootball in Kerry, but surely we’re capable of better teresting to see how they’re fixed for that. It’s than this? a balls for Celtic as well. I’m sure they would have preferred to play. This walkover thing is becoming a major problem. Listowel, who looked like realistic Greyhound Bar KO Cup title contenders at the start of the season, Mitchels Avenue 2-1 Windmill United gave a game to Dingle a couple of weeks ago. And remember: there are only nine Fenit Samphires teams in the division because Park withdrew 7-0 CSKA Tralee from the league a couple of months into the 2016/17 season. One of those nine teams, Killarney Athletic 5-1 Mastergeeha Inter Kenmare, did the same thing this season. Something is seriously wrong with socListowel Celtic 4-2 AC Athletic cer in Kerry. Football is getting more and more professional. Soccer, at senior level Ballyheigue 2-4 at least, seems to be going in the opposite Killorglin direction. Camp United Having to compete with football for play2-3 Tralee Celtic ers is definitely part of the problem but, to be honest, I completely understand fellas choosing football over soccer. There’s no comparison in terms of professionalism. Division 5 teams are more professional Sunday, April 8 than us. Soccer clubs simply don’t have Premier A the resources to look after their players; 11.30am Listowel Celtic v Killarney Celtic you only have to look at the pitches to see that. 3.30pm Castleisland v I’ve always preferred playing soccer but Fenit Samphires if I thought I could go back and start for Legion, I might prioritise football as 5.30pm Killarney Athleti c v Dingle Bay Rovers well. Football clubs are in a position to

Jamie O’Sullivan was the undoubted star of the show as he put on an exhibition of kicking, especially in the first half when he registered an impressive 1-9. The majority were from placed balls but they certainly weren’t handy frees; he even managed one with his weaker left foot. The Killarney side took full advantage of the wind in the first half and led by seven, 1-13 to 2-3, at the break. Kenmare started the second half strongly, however, and by the midway point in the period they had cut the deficit to a single point. Jack O’Neill netted a crucial goal in the 46th minute to re-establish Legion’s dominance and a couple of more frees from O’Sullivan helped them over the line. It was a massive result for Legion who were without the services of the injured James O’Donoghue

and Shaun Keane. They showed savage intensity in defending from the front and forced a lot of mistakes from their opponents, and their back six is looking very strong as well. James O’Sullivan’s side will now surely fancy their chances of advancing to the next phase of the competition. Their next opponents, Rathmore, were missing a number of key players in their Group 2 opener against Dingle and Kerry star Paul Geaney really put them to the sword as he racked up 3-5 in an eight-point win. With the bottom placed teams from each group facing a relegation playoff, Sunday’s clash between Legion and Rathmore in Derreen is almost a must-win for Paul Murphy and co. Kenmare host Dingle in the other fixture on Sunday. In Group 2, Dr Crokes had a very comfortable win over An Ghaeltacht in Tralee. Playing with a strong breeze, Pat O’Shea’s side raced into a 1-4 to no score lead and led by 11 points, 1-10 to 0-3, by half time. They registered seven points in the second

and that was more than enough as An Ghaeltacht only managed three more scores with the wind at their backs. Division 2 outfit Austin Stacks won their derby with Kerins O’Rahilly’s by 1-15 to 0-13 on Saturday. David Mannix top scored for Stacks with 1-5 (two frees), Ferdia O’Brien added three points and centre back Jack O’Shea chipped win with a brace. Stacks will be hoping to make it two from two when they host An Ghaeltacht this weekend, as will Crokes as they travel to Strand Road to play Rahilly’s. In the Intermediate, Spa continued their good run of form with a solid victory over Gneeveguilla, Glenflesk defeated Castleisland Desmonds and Kilcummin had a narrow one-point win over Glenbeigh-Glencar. Fossa also got their championship off to a winning start as they overcame Keel in Killorglin. All in all, it was an excellent weekend of club football for Killarney and the surrounding parishes. Let’s hope for more of the same this time around.

Around The World Words: Adam Moynihan I might as well nail my colours to the mast: I don’t like Cristiano Ronaldo. He’s a relentless attention seeker and I think his behaviour on the pitch is often disrespectful to his teammates. If someone on your team acted the way he does – sulking when he doesn’t get a pass, visibly berating those around him, celebrating on his own – you’d be slating him in the bar all night. He’s the definition of a mé féiner. But then there’s the goals. I remember watching an interview with Liam Gallagher and he was asked about the critics. “What do you think of people who don’t rate Oasis?” “You can say what you want about us,” he reflected. “But you can’t deny the tunes.” With Ronaldo, you can’t deny the goals. His record is out of this world. He’s the all-time top scorer in Europe’s top five leagues (391), the Champions League (117) and the European
The Defining Image Of Ronaldo’s Great Career
Championships (29). In total, between club and country, he has scored 647 goals in 903 games. For Madrid, he has 307 league goals in 288 games. Think about that for a second. Looking at those numbers, Cristiano Ronaldo is the greatest player to have ever kicked a ball. (Besides Lionel Messi.) The great players all have that one unique moment that stands out above the rest. For Pelé, it was his chest control, flick over the head of a Swedish defender and subsequent finish in the 1958 World Cup final. For Maradona, it’s his incredible solo goal against England in ’86. (Or the Hand of God, depending on how much you hate England.) Zidane scored twice in a World Cup final but his volley against Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League
stands out the most. Lionel Messi has scored so many perfect goals it’s hard to choose just one but his Maradona-esque effort against Getafe will probably go down as his finest. Ronaldo has scored hundreds upon hundreds of goals, and many of them have been superb, but not until Tuesday night has he had that one moment of absolute sheer and utter perfection, the goal that defines him as one of the best footballers - and athletes – of all time. The Turin night fell silent for a second as the ball hit the net, and slowly but surely a ripple of applause spread out around the partisan Juventus Stadium. Their Champions League dreams had been crushed but they knew they had witnessed something exceptional. The great Cristiano Ronaldo had just scored his greatest ever goal.
Bahrain Grand Prix Is Hamilton’s To Lose The F1 circus is in Bahrain this weekend for round two of the championship. Bahrain was introduced to the calendar in 2004 and marked the first ever round of the FIA Formula One World Championship to be held in the Middle East. The track is located at Sakhir, 30km south-west of the island’s capital, Manama.
This weekend, Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel will be hoping for a repeat of the season opener when, through pit stop strategy, he took the win from Lewis Hamilton. Up to that point the Mercedes driver had dominated proceedings throughout the Melbourne weekend. Mercedes had the pace in
Melbourne with Ferrari close behind, however they never presented a serious challenge all weekend. This early in the season, Bahrain will be a similar affair. It’s Hamilton’s to lose but, as we saw last week, anything can happen and it’s down to who manages a situation better. Ferrari are under pressure to deliver
this year after losing the hold of the championship lead mid-season last year through failures within the team.

Another truly historic weekend for Munster fans as their team achieved the impossible against a much-fancied Toulon in the quarter final of the European Champions Cup. Munster were missing ten of their first team regulars going into this match and the French giants were seen as favourites. Typically French sides don’t travel well and typically French sides fare poorly at Thomond Park but with the international make up of Toulon, the 6 Nations didn’t decimate their side like
Assumpta O’Donoghue who was the lucky winner of a trip to Paris after purchasing a ticket from St Paul’s Basketball Club for the Basketball Ireland National Draw. Also pictured are her son JJ O’Donoghue, St Paul’s Treasurer Jean Courtney and Chairman Paul Sheehan. Pic: Eamonn Keogh.
Conway Try Will Go Down In Thomond Lore Munster. However, a cracker was witnessed by the Munster faithful and the men in red ran out winners by a solitary point, 20-19. The returning CJ Stander, Peter O’Mahony and Conor Murray brought the 6 Nations intensity and made a welcome return to the fold, with Murray baffling the opposition and, indeed, the TMO to score an opportunistic try early on in the match. So baffling indeed, the TMO spent almost 6 minutes deliberating whether the
Patrickswell man had scored. Another hero on the day was Ian Kearney with his 100% from the boot. In a day where the youngsters stepped up and shone one, man stood up above them all: Andrew Conway. His try was a true work of art and will go down in Thomond Park lore for many years to come. Conway caught a cleared kick on the halfway line and evaded the charging Toulon players to score a wondrous solo try to steal the game in the end. This was after the much-dis-
liked, swan-diving Chris Ashton almost won the match with a try with a few minutes to go. In the end, Munster ran out winners with a certain rub of the green. Next up they take on Donncha Ryan’s Racing 92 in the semi-final. This will be a bittersweet match for the Corkman and for Simon Zebo as he watches his home team take on his new team at the highest level in European Rugby. Here’s hoping the men in red will get a few of the injured players back in time.

Dr Crokes Club Club Championship Round 1, Dr Crokes 1-17 An Ghaeltacht 0-6. Sometime when you have the advantage of a strong breeze you do not settle quickly enough into the game. This could not be said about our team last Sunday. We had a goal and a point early on. We increased that to 1-4 by the end of the first quarter. We also kept our opponents scoreless during that period. In the second quarter, we sent over six points to An Ghaeltachts two points. This gave us a half

Sport 40 Clubs In Killarney Advertiser This Week time lead of 1-10 to 0-2. Our opponents had enough play in this half to have scored much more than the two points. Even though we had a good lead, it was still very important that we have a good start to the second half. We achieved this, sending over four points to An Ghaeltachts on in the first ten minutes of the third quarter. We had a commanding lead at this stage and were happy to have equality with our opponents, three points each, in the remaining forty minutes of the game. We can be very happy with our display and even though An Ghaeltacht would have been unhappy how they performed they know they would have been much closer at the end had they taken their chances they were presented with during the game. UNDER 12 GIRLS: U12 girls had their first outing in the preliminary round of the County League on Tuesday last against Kilcummin and resulted in a tremendous team victory on the night - Dr Crokes 9-12, Kilcummin 6-4. Fossa GAA JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP: Fossa recorded a good win over Keel in the Junior premier championship on Saturday evening. Fossa started in whirlwind fashion racing into an early lead with two frees from David Clifford and a goal from Donald O’Sullivan after six minutes. They added two further points from Tadgh O’Shea and Donald before Keel got on the scoreboard and lead 1-04 to 0-01 after 15 minutes. Fossa were playing with panach at this stage but Keel gradually got back into the game with frees from Aaron Murphy reducing the lead all the time. Two points from play by Paudie Clifford and two frees from Donald O’Sullivan left Fossa leading at the break, 1-07 to
0-06. The second half was real championship fare with both teams giving their all, Aaron Murphy was Keel’s main scoring threat, he kicked seven points in all, however Fossa kept their noses in front courtsey of two superb points from Paudie Clifford. Further scores from Tadgh O’Shea and Matt Rennie left Fossa winners on a score of 1-12 to 0-11. Fossa will be pleased with this display, it was tough and uncompromising at times but this is what championship football is all about and they came through a stern test. The defence was very solid, they allowed Keel no goal chance and were superbly marshalled by Anthony Wharton and Derry O’Sullivan, the midfield of Fintan Coffey and Matt Rennie worked really hard and gave a great platform for our industrious forward division where David Clifford will always be a serious threat but it was the four quite brilliant points from play by Paudie Clifford that was the difference between the sides on this occasion. Next up is St. Michael’s/ Foilmore next Sunday in Fossa at 2.30 pm. Listry GAA MATCH RESULT: Two very competitive teams battled for the Castleisland mart Junior Premier Championship Round 1 Group 2 in Glenbeigh on Easter Sunday, Listry V Skellig Rangers. Our Senior team started the group phase of the Intermediate Championship with a 4 point win against a strong Castleisland Desmonds team. It was a good team performance especially in the second half. Darragh Roche was our top scorer with 8 points(3f) and was well assisted in the forwards by Stephen O Donoghue who got 3 great long range points from play. Shane Courtney and Chris O Donoghue were outstanding in the backs. Kilcummin GAA SENIOR FOOTBALL: Castleisland mart intermediate co championship. Kilcummin 12 - Glenbeigh/Glencar 11. Returning to the Intermediate Championship after 20 years we got off to a winning start on Saturday last in Beaufort. In what was a close encounter throughout, we just about deserved to shade it considering the amount of possession we enjoyed. However the number of wides kicked will give the management team cause for deliberation before taking on Milltown Castlemaine at the week end. In a defence that played well overall, Sean O’Leary, Donal Maher and William Maher excelled while Kieran Murphy continued his good form in the centre and the fact that all the forwards managed to get on the scoresheet is a positive outcome. Team Brendan Kealy, Jamie O’ Donoghue, Daniel Moynihan, Sean O’Leary,(0-1) Donal Maher, Philip Casey, William Maher, Kevin Gorman, Kieran Murphy,(0-2) Shane McSweeney, (0-1) Gary O’Leary, (0-1) Padraig Nagle, (0-2) Kevin McCarthy,(0-1) Damien O Leary, (0-1) Noel Duggan, (0-3) Subs used Mikey O’Shea, John McCarthy, Matt Keane. Next outing on Sunday at 2.30 in Milltown v Milltown /Castlemaine OSKARS NIGHT: It was a massive success on last Thursday night. Kilcummin GAA club appreciate the efforts of the committee, the performers, sponsors and the community at large who supported the event. A special word of thanks to Glenflesk GAA club on what was a wonderful experience of friendship and co-operation. More about the OSKARS in the coming weeks.

Killarney Legion CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP: 1 st. Rd, Killarney Legion 2-15 Kenmare shamrocks 3 – 8. Credit to both sides who served up a competitive hard fought - and despite the rain and strong breeze high quality game. Faster out of the blocks the Legion raced into a 6 pt. lead an early goal coming from the outstanding Jamie O Sullivan who had a personal tally of 1-11. Kenmare however settled into their stride and took advantage of a Legion defensive mix-up to find the net. This was followed by a further two points and a leg block by the Legion backs saw the resultant penalty driven to the net. However, this led to a determined last 15 mins.by the Legion and a flurry of points saw them go in with a healthy 7-point lead. With the wind at their backs the Shamrocks set about their task with renewed vigour and by midway in the second half had narrowed the gap to just a single point having scored another goal after another Legion defensive slip. The move of Chris Davies onto Stephen O Brien who was becoming more influential paid big dividends along with Jonathan Lynes dynamic leadership for the Legion as they wrestled control back and buoyed by a Jack O Neill goal they controlled the last 10 minutes stretching the lead once again to 5 pts. before Kenmare pointed from a free to leave a 4 point winning margin. U14 BOYS: Ballymacelligott 1-7 Killarney Legion 3-13 A fine away win for the u14’s in this first game of the year for them and registering a very healthy 3-13 in the process. FIXTURE: Club championship Rd.2, Killarney Legion V Rathmore, Sunday 8th.April at 2.30 p.m. in Derreen, all support greatly appreciated. LEGION CLOTHES COLLECTION: Please drop any bags to the clubhouse before Saturday April 14th.All sorts accepted. Milltown Castlemaine GAA U14 County League Div. 3: By Danny McClure. Conditions were very heavy in Milltown on Thursday evening as Milltown/Castlemaine’s Under 14 (Green Team) got their first game of the year underway against Rathmore. As the rain poured down, our home side raced into an early lead with some great play by the forward line with Dara Hogan and Brendan Casey grabbing the goals for MC. The visitors managed two goals of their own but it wasn’t enough to reel in the home team who lead 2-06 to 2-02. The second half started slowly and conditions were very wet underfoot. Milltown/Castlemaine got into their scoring groove though in the second half with Dara Hogan and Conor Spillane raising the green flag again. Other scorers on the night included Rian Foley, Liam Roche and for the final point of the game -Anthony Barrett. Daire McCarthy made two super saves at vital moments in the second half. Conor Spillane’s work rate in the second half was immense, spurring his team on to victory. There were other fine performances from Oisín Spring and the outstanding Ben Downes on a good evening for an impressive Milltown/Castlemaine side. M/C 5-10, Rathmore 3-02 was the final score.
