New Killarney distillery has roots with Daniel O’Connell

Killarney students metres from London terror attack Teachers and students have this week been praised for remaining calm after getting caught up close to last Friday’s London terror attack on London Bridge. | By Sean Moriarty The Leaving Cert class from St Brigid’s Secondary School were on their annual post-Christmas exams trip to the British capital – and just 300 metres away from where the incident happened – where five people were stabbed, two fatally. However, they managed to get the last Tube out of the area before police shutdown the train service. The attack took place, according to police records, at 1.55pm when perpetrator Usman Kha, a convicted terrorist,

shot dead by police after members of the public unarmed him by using a fire extinguisher. At the time of the attack the students were visiting The Monument to the Great Fire of London - less than 300 metres away from London Bridge. The student’s itinerary stated that they should meet outside Monument Tube Station at 2pm so they could carry on their tour to the Imperial War Museum. “As they were making their way down from The Monument they could see people running in every direction on the bridge,” Deputy Principal Mairéad

Copper deficiency likely cause of deer illness | By Anne Lucey The Department of Culture Heritage and the Gaeltacht say tests of a small number of deer have shown they are suffering from ‘enzootic ataxia’, a condition brought on by copper deficiency. However, the diagnoses is being questioned by conservation and deer management body, the Irish Deer Commission (IDC), which first spotted unusual stumbling and staggering among the Killarney Reds this autumn, who also say that this is the first time it has occurred among wild deer in Ireland. The commission had suspected the deer were affected by “staggers” when a stag

with stunted horns was observed in a distressing condition on the fringes of the annual rut walk organised by rangers and the commission in Killarney in October. According to the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, several of the deer carcasses sent for tests to the regional veterinary laboratory confirmed the animals were not suffering from “staggers”. “The NPWS in observing behaviours recently in a very limited number of deer followed the appropriate veterinary protocols to ascertain the cause and sent several of the deer for tests at the Regional Veterinary Laboratory (RVL),” the department said.

Lucey told the Killarney Advertiser. “They were just two city blocks away but at the time they did not really know what was going on but they kept to their schedule. It was only when they were on the train, they realised there was something serious going on and that they were on the last train out of there.” The next stop on the student’s schedule was the Imperial War Museum, approximately 10 stops on The London Underground’s District Line, where there is no mobile signal. “Once the teachers and students got to the War Museum and realised what was going on, everyone phoned home and the school to let everyone know they were ok,” she added. “Everyone remained calm.” “The results from these tests have confirmed that the animals were afflicted in fact by enzootic ataxia, which is a condition that can be brought on by copper deficiency. This is a natural occurring phenomenon that happens where the animals in question fail to get the necessary trace elements (copper) from their food sources.” However, Irish Deer Commission spokesman Damien Hannigan said the Commission are consulting with leading deer veterinary experts who believe copper deficiency is no means the sole cause of the condition and may be complicated by elevated levels of other elements in the forage and soil of Killarney National Park. “It is known there are also other conditions that produce the same clinical signs to enzootic ataxia, such as the staggers condition,” he said. “The suggested enzootic ataxia diagnosis creates more questions than answers.”

A new whiskey distillery – with a direct connection to Daniel O’Connell The Liberator – will open for production in Killarney in the New Year. Wayward Irish Spirits will, initially, finish whiskey from out-sourced barley, at a site in Fossa and this ‘The Liberator Irish Whiskey’ will be for sale in February. Their own product, ‘King of Ireland’ range, will commence distilling onsite in 2023 and be ready for sale by 2024. The company was founded by London-based property tycoon Maurice O’Connell, a great-great-great-grandnephew of The Liberator himself. The 300-year-old house in Fossa, known as Lakeview House, has been owned by the O’Connell family since they switched in to politics and away from their wine and spirits importing business from their original home in Caherdaniel. The new whiskey was launched at Whiskey Live which took place in Dublin on November 22 and 23. Maurice O’Connell believes that the house built by Daniel’s brother James has the perfect climate for distilling whiskey. “I had not appreciated what we have here in Kerry,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “It is extraordinary. The Gulfstream over the mountain drops in to the water in the lakes, we could have four seasons in a hour here and that interaction will make the whiskey better as it matures.” As well as opening the distillery, O’Connell hopes to add a visitor centre to the site in the future. Further plans include linking up with established businesses like the Whiskey Larder and make Killarney a whisky hub.

New water fountain is a step against climate change A brand new water fountain – the first by Kerry County Council – has been installed outside Killarney Courthouse – as a way to combat plastic bottle usage.

The new facility at Fairhill was welcomed as a great addition to the town this week by Cathaoirleach of Killarney Municipal District and member of the Looking Good Committee Councillor, Cllr Michael Gleeson, who said the pilot project aims to help reduce plastic waste. "A sad legacy of the last century is that so many of our streams, rivers, lakes and oceans are so badly polluted,” Mayor Gleeson said. “It is my hope that this water fountain

will not only help to quench thirsts but will also help us all to realise how precious a gift clean and safe drinking water really is. It is also to be hoped that using this fountain will encourage us all to use fewer plastic bottles and non-recyclable cups.” The Council will closely monitor the fountain and if it proves successful there will be more provided over the coming years, he added. “My thanks to all involved in providing this facility for the benefit of locals and tourists.”

Fassbender’s new look for major movie role | By Sean Moriarty

DYNAMIC DUO: Musicians Brian Kennedy and Liam O’Connor will play the Friary Church on December 15.

Top musicians in concert next week | By Sean Moriarty Well-known local musician Liam O’Connor will join forces with Eurovision hero Brian Kennedy for a special Christmas performance that will take place in the Friary Church on Sunday, December 15. O’Connor is a regular feature on the local scene and was recently named as ‘Ireland’s Most Influential Accordion Player’ at the Irish Entertainment Awards. Kennedy from Belfast, represented Ireland in the 2006 Eurovision Song Contest final in Athens where he finished tenth.

His performance in the contest's semi-finals marked the 1000th song to feature in the history of the Eurovision competition. The song also performed well in the Irish charts, becoming a number four hit. The pair worked together in the past including concerts in Limerick two years ago and one in Boherbue County Cork in October. “He is an internationally recognised singer and I like working with Brian,” Liam told the Killarney Advertiser. “It will be very nice and there will be great synergy, and as it’s coming up to Christmas there will be a few traditional Christmas songs too.”

If local Hollywood legend Michael Fassbender is home for the Christmas holidays - you may not recognise him – as he has completely changed his look for a new movie role. His usual ginger hair has been dyed a platinum ashy blonde for his latest movie ‘Next Goal Wins’, the story of Dutch soccer coach Thomas Rongen who led the American Samoa soccer team from obscurity to qualify for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. It is a busy time for the Fossa man who is currently in Hawaii making the film and is also in the midst of recording a YouTube series following his attempts to qualify for the legendary Le Mans 24

hour car race in France next June. So far, seven episodes of his Road to Le Mans series have been aired on the internet following his tentative steps in the Porsche Sports Cup Germany. His opening races have attracted factory attention from the motorsport department of the legendary German car brand. “What do you do when you’ve conquered Hollywood? For most people, the answer would probably be: sit back and relax. Acting star, Michael Fassbender, however, has a different plan: he wants to compete as a driver at the 24h of Le Mans,” a Porsche motorsport spokesperson said. “That requires stamina and endurance – both physically and mentally and we’ll be closely involved.”

Festive charity concert planned

One local soprano is lending her voice to charity next Wednesday night as she’s planning a festive fundraising night of songs and poetry. | By Michelle Crean Mary Culloty O’Sullivan, who is originally from Rock Road and now living in Oak Hill, will perform a mix of songs with funds raised from the evening going to local group KASI. The concert takes place in the Methodist Church near the Avenue Hotel at 7.30pm. “Once again I am doing a charity Christmas concert and this year it's for KASI, a local support group for asylum seekers and refugees in Killarney and the greater Killarney area,” Mary told the Killarney Advertiser. A classically trained soprano, songs on the night will be a mixture of genres. “There’ll be something for everyone.

I’ll be singing Christmas carols and love songs, there’ll be poetry too and my special guests are my ‘Finding Your Voice’ group which was set up last year and is going from strength to strength.” The concert will be just over an hour long and there’s free admission with donations gratefully accepted, she added. Mary, mother of brother/sister duo Greywind who are seeing some phenomenal success including a headline show at Whelans in Dublin on Thursday, December 12 and a support act for The Coronas in the INEC on December 29, says singing gives her great joy. “I have been singing all my life. I love to reach people and feel it lifts them. It’s amazing how the emotion of the song touches people.”

To date the dip has raised €54,000, Niki explained to the Killarney Advertiser. “I wanted to do something in her memory and help a mental health charity. I chose Aware as it was the first one I had heard of. It started with 20 people and now we have up to 150 who take part each year.” Participants are asked to gather from 10.30am onwards and head into the water at 11am. Those taking part can contact Niki beforehand for a sponsorship pack and each person will receive a t-shirt from Aware on the day. Donations are also accepted on the day. “It’s really nice to get out and socialise on Christmas morning. It’s filled with community spirit and also good to help a charity. There will also be refreshments and snacks for everyone there on the day.” For more information see Facebook: Christmas Day Dip.

Sadness at passing of Killarney’s centenarian | By Michelle Crean There was great sadness in the town over the weekend with the news of the death of centenarian John Coffey. John, from Lewis Road, passed away peacefully on Friday last in the Bon Secours Hospital, Tralee, after a short illness. Funeral Mass took place on Monday morning followed by burial afterwards in Aghadoe Cemetery. Just last August, John, who was the last of 12 children born to Jeremiah and Nora Coffey (nee O’Connell) in Carnahone, Beaufort, celebrated his 100th birthday with family who travelled from all over Ireland, Australia and America for an

enormous party in Killarney Golf and Fishing Club. His daughter Mary this week paid tribute to her father saying he showed great positivity and gratitude throughout his long life. “My dad had great positivity and gratitude for everything in life. We were fortunate to have him for so long and in such good health.” She added that she’d like to thank Dr Donal Coffey, Ross Medical Practice, O’Shea’s Funeral Home, the Bon Secours and the people of Killarney for coming out in such numbers for his funeral. “I’d also like to thank the Presentation nuns who were so welcoming to him as he went to Mass there every morning.”

Local boys steal the hearts of the nation on live TV | By Michelle Crean

From book reviewer Rian Gleeson’s shock surprise that the show has arranged for him to have a private session with musician Sharon Shannon - to Denis Moroney’s emotional rendition of ‘Grace’ – there wasn’t a dry eye in households across the country. Seven-year-old Rian from Artegallivan, who was featured in the Killarney Advertiser two weeks ago, said appearing on the show was “a dream come true”. “It was so exciting to get to meet Ryan and see the magical set,” Rian told the Killarney Advertiser. “I really enjoyed the books I got to review and I even got to meet some of the authors the week before the show. All of the team in RTÉ were so nice, I played my accordion and it was definitely a day I will never forget!” Rian was really shocked when Ryan told him he had a surprise that will involve him meeting Sharon Shannon on December 14.

He will get an hour long master class with the accordion player and get to go to her concert in the INEC. Rian has been learning the accordion for the last seven months under the tutelage of his dad Mícheál Gleeson, so this is going to be a very special experience for them both. “I was stunned when Ryan told me, I am so happy and I cannot wait to meet her.” For 12-year-old Denis from Killorglin, appearing on the show was very emotional as both his parents, Lyn and Michael, were unable to be there as they were away in New York on their honeymoon – seven years after they married, he told Tubridy. After his stunning performance, Tubridy, so moved by his singing, hugged Denis and told the audience ‘I wasn’t supposed to come up here at all but this guy touched my heart’. “You did it. How are you feeling? You’re a good guy, do you know that?”, he told Denis, who played a leading role in last year’s Killarney Musical Society’s 'The Sound of Music'. From Friday to Sunday a further 233,000 streams were made on the RTE Player. However, Denis waited for his parents to return home and together watched the show with younger brother Daniel (9) on Monday.

NEW BOOK: Tom 'Totty' O’Sullivan has written a book called 'Kerry Dreamtime Legends and Lore of the MaGillicuddy Reeks'. Photo: Michelle Crean

New book traces lesser-known history of the Reeks area

A Beaufort musician, historian and world traveller has written a new book on the legends and lore of the MacGillycuddy Reeks. | By Sean Moriarty Tom ‘Totty’ O’Sullivan has self-published 'Kerry Dreamtime Legends and Lore of the MaGillicuddy Reeks', a 300-page collection of stories, history and poetry from the foothills of Ireland’s highest mountain. The official launch of the new book will take place next Thursday, December 12 at the Beaufort Bar at 8pm. Originally from the Milltown/Castlemaine area, Tom currently lives in the townland of Alohart on the approach to Cronin’s Yard. He previously ghost wrote a book for Milltown native Liam ‘The Bandon’ O’Shea entitled ‘Milltown and Back’ which told the story of O’Shea’s time living with Aborigines in the Australian Outback. He explained to the Killarney Advertiser how this was part inspiration for his new book. “The Aborigines call their time travelling ‘their dream time’,” he said. “I was always

interested in history, and I have done a lot of work with the Killorglin Archive. I have travelled extensively through Africa and India and have always been fascinated by the translation of place-names. Now that I am living in Alohart I realised there is a niche in the market covering this area.” The book is full of fascinating titbits of knowledge of the area, like the reason why all the grottos in the area are facing west, that Ireland’s fastest river rises in Carrauntohil, or that ingredients for the local cure for baldness involves the preparation of the bladder of one the many wild mountain goats in the area. “I have been told by people who have read the book that it is great for dipping in and out of, finding a random fact, and starting conversations based on that fact,” he added. The book can be ordered directly from the author on 087 9807122 and proceeds will go towards the Beaufort Community Hall refurbishment project.

VIEWS NEWS Fr Peter’s letter has had a profound effect ON

THE

x

A four-paragraph letter in Tuesday’s Irish Times from Fr Peter McVerry SJ was surely the most shared in recent days. Sometimes the simplest stories, simply told, have the most profound effect. Here it is in case you haven’t read it: ‘Sir, I attended court with a young homeless boy who had been charged with theft of a bottle of orange, value €1. Another homeless man was charged with theft of four bars of chocolate, value €3. Another homeless man was charged with theft of two packets of Silk Cut cigarettes. A TD, on his way to, or from his full-time, very well paid job in Brussels, stops by at Dáil Éireann to sign in, so that he can collect his full €51,600 expenses for his attendance in the Dail.” The TD of course was Dara Murphy the FG fellow working in Brussels since 2017. Later on Tuesday, Fianna Fail TDs, all of them, well paid, well secured, overly expensed beyond most people’s dreams, sat on their lily-livered hands and abstained from the vote of no confidence put down by the Social Democrats in

Sometimes the simplest stories, simply told, have the most profound effect Housing Minister Eoghan Murphy. I think some of their ancestors of the old Fianna Fail concerned with social justice for the poor of the towns and the poor and downtrodden of the countryside would be turning in their graves. But perhaps those old Fianna Fail ancestors are turning with some time now!

RESIGNATION

Then on Wednesday morning we awoke to the news that a half hour or so after voting for an inept housing minister and saving the Government by the skin of their teeth the Cork TD and Brussels high flier Dara Murphy resigned.

Columnist ANNE LUCEY gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry and beyond

The cynicism of FG in this is almost unbearable to stomach. It is unforgiveable in my books. But you know, Fianna Fail and Fine Gael, the old power brokers, are not the only ones around these days. Sinn Fein supported the Social Democrats. I have to say, now that the Shinners have got rid of most of their old “brigade” - just as FF and FG did 50 years ago - they are playing a blinder and have some of the best spokesmen in issues like housing with Eoin O Broin and have a good man in Pearse Doherty too. I am still not convinced about Mary Lou, unfortunately. The results of the recent by-election in Dublin Mid-West with the surprise election of Mark Ward show the way people are turning. It does not surprise me at all that few or no political commentator in any national forum missed the resurrection of Sinn Fein.

LACK OF SERVICES

On the ground though, people are fed up with taxes and lack of services and are being hounded with charges and health warnings and all kinds of things. And they are increasingly fed up with so many, far too many, TDs who are so well remunerated and who are devoted

Fr Peter McVerry.

to building wealth, shamelessly - with overpaid senior civil servants who have to answer for nothing. Two weeks ago I was struck by Cllr Pa Daly, the Kerry Sinn Fein candidate, at the Council budget meeting, for the same reasons as I was struck Fr McVerry. Again it was a simple statement: “It’s the housing policy that’s increasing the homelessness, not the other way round,” Daly stated starkly. People are writing off the chances of SF holding onto their Kerry seat - I wouldn’t be in such a hurry to do so. There’s a lot of disquiet around this county and there is a lot of anger too. There is no lightning rod in terms of a candidate - and the rest of the field - those standing so far and even those straining in the side lines, have little magnetic charm in my view. So I definitely won’t write off Sinn Fein. And who knows that other shade of green - the Greens, my old companions - may bring in a couple of thousand votes with the former journalist Cleo Murphy too.

It’s time to modernise Killarney courthouse It was the Algerian-French writer Albert Camus who said “I like justice, but I will defend my mother before justice”. He refused to take sides in the Algerian War of Independence where his mother still lived. It was a position that suited neither left nor right and he was roundly condemned. I only refer to it because whatever about the history of the statement, it is essential Camus: ‘the human being comes before any system, earthly or divine’. Albert Camus was a philosopher, a writer, a journalist, and was in the resistance in Paris. Although shunned by the liberal left and the communists, he was, I feel, a founder thinker of modern Europe. Why do I raise his ghost? He wrote

about justice and the shunned and he would not like the courthouse in Killarney or the one in Tralee.

PROBLEMS

This week we have the good news of a drinking water fountain outside the court - but there is no public toilet. And the only toilet that is in the building normally reserved for the solicitors and barristers - was blocked and in a disgusting state on Monday last. The seats for the press are all broken and twisted and we all walk out of there half crippled after only an hour. In fact, there is one Tralee journalist who refuses to “sit in Killarney” and I don’t blame him. Put us there for eight hours and include no break for lunch - as is the new practice - and we are all half dead. But we haven’t the worst of it at all

- the accused, the victims and their families, are sitting on tiered boards dreamt up as ideal seating for courts in the austere, harsh, Victorian era of deportation and capital punishment. Then if you have the misfortune of going to Tralee - at least you will have a toilet - but there is little else. The mark of a civilised society is how it treats its vulnerable, its young, its disabled, its aged, but also its condemned, its accused, its stressed. I contrast the uncouth approach in this county, “The Kingdom” with the sumptuous surroundings of other counties and other systems.

MODERNISING PROTECTED BUILDINGS

In France for instance, an old palace completely renovated acts as the Palais de Justice in beautiful Aix-en-

Provence. The building is not unlike Tralee courthouse in that it is Palladian style, with pillars and steps and twin flanking monuments. But in Aix, instead of being abandoned in order to preserve it as the Council and courts service intended with Tralee, the old building has been fitted with modern wheelchair accessible facilities on either side, seamlessly. I am half tempted to suggest it to the court service to take a tour to Aix to see for themselves what can be achieved with a court complex in beautiful old buildings. Surely it is the one European law when it comes to many things including modernising protected buildings? And surely too there is European law about working time and decent human facilities for all working and present in the courts for whatever reason. Or does it not apply in Kerry?

Religious Education award for Muckross graduate

EXCLUSIVE

| By Sean Moriarty A Muckross graduate in Primary Education had double cause for celebration after achieving top student status in her class at the annual Hibernia College conferring ceremony which was held at Dublin’s Convention Centre recently. Team Hope charity exceeds target The Team Hope charity has outdone itself again this year - by collecting more gift boxes for under privileged children abroad - than they did last year. | By Francis Foley Due to the overwhelming support of the people of Killarney, at least 4000 gift boxes have been collected. Team Hope in Killarney, headed by Margaret Scully and her son Chris, are proud to see an improvement in the amount of boxes they normally collect. This achievement is made even more special as the charity, which covers the Killarney and south Kerry areas, collects gift items donated by the public and creates gift boxes made up of toys, clothes and other useable goods that are then sent to areas of the world that have the greatest need, is also celebrating its 10th anniversary in operation. There are restrictions on what can and can’t be sent to the children, as some items that may seem harmless, could lead to unintended negative environmental or cultural effects. These items could include anything from certain sweets to batteries.

The objective of the charity could not be met without the great effort and time given to the Team Hope cause by its volunteers which include, Josie Real, Dave O’Conner, Monica O’Shea, Flick Golding, Laura Ogiema, John and Kathleen Wrenn, Kitty Murphy and many others. It is because of people like this and the continuing kindness of the people of Killarney and the surrounding areas that nearly 24,000 boxes have been produced in South Kerry alone. Margaret this week expressed her gratitude to the people of Killarney for their donations. “I’d like to shout out a huge thank you to all the people of South Kerry for their generosity, every man, woman and child that has made up a box plus all the wonderful volunteers for their time, and the O’Brien family for the use of their building for our work,” she told the Killarney Advertiser. Chris also added thanks to all the schools and businesses that have helped Team Hope to keep going.

Shona O'Sullivan was honoured with the Religious Education Award – presented by the college to the student who achieves the highest grade in religious education on the Primary programme. Kerry grandad scoops €41k on Winning Streak A retired grandfather from Scartaglin won prizes totalling an impressive €41,000 on RTÉ One’s Winning Streak last Saturday night. John Reidy was delighted with his winnings as he scooped €38,000 in cash and won a holiday to Madeira, Portugal worth €3,000. John, who bought his ticket in Garvey’s, Castleisland, was supported in the studio audience last Saturday by his wife of 45 years, Sheila, their four adult children and some of eight grandchildren. John, a retired farmer, told the Killarney Advertiser this week that he was overwhelmed by all the well wishes before and after the show by everyone wishing him good luck and congratulations on his winnings.

He said he was watching Winning Streak with Sheila the Saturday evening before and was left shocked when his own scratch card was pulled out of the drum by presenters Marty Whelan and Sinead Kennedy. ‘It was a once in a lifetime opportunity and I was delighted to have all my family and friends with me to celebrate,” John said. "I had to pinch myself because it was surreal to be in the hot seat instead of watching it on TV from my seat at home.” John added that he’d especially like to thank everyone from all over for all the messages, cards, phone calls and visits. Now, both John and Sheila have plans to treat the family and grandkids for Christmas as well as renovate the house next year.

Sixth edition of Old Kerry Journal published Several Killarney journalists and historians have contributed to the sixth edition of ‘The Old Kerry Journal’ which will go on sale next Tuesday, December 10. | By Sean Moriarty

DON'T WALK BY: Glencar Construction Ltd's poster advertising the Reeks region on a building site in Southwark, London.

London billboards promote Kerry

London commuters are being enticed to visit Kerry’s Reeks District thanks to an innovative advertising partnership with Glencar Construction – a UK-based company with roots in the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks. The construction company has donated billboards at three of its London sites to the destination marketing organisation and the slots are being used as part of a playful campaign to highlight the differences between hectic commuter life in the UK capital and the adventure and lifestyle opportunities afforded on the south-west coast of Ireland, just a 60-minute flight away. The campaign features on sites in Southwark, Battersea and Stratford. The billboards include striking images of climbing on Beenkeragh, surfing at Inch Beach and cycling in the Gap of Dunloe. “We may be based in the UK, but both

our company name and our family surname highlight our roots back home in Kerry,” Glencar Construction Managing Director Eddie McGillycuddy, said. “We are delighted to donate the billboard spaces at our London construction sites in an effort to help drive visitors to the Reeks District given our obvious sentimental ties with the region.” It is the second such campaign in London. Back in 2012, in the run up to the London Olympics, Toureeen Ltd, a company with its roots in Knocknagoshel, painted Go Kerry logos on the back of its fleet of vans.

The 2020 edition follows in the footsteps of its predecessors in providing articles and images on Kerry’s long and storied history. Donald Cameron of Killarney provides extracts from ‘Kerry Days’ written by his relative, Olive Trench, born in 1887, and daughter of George Trent, Land Agent to the Ardfert Estate. Tim Buckley of Killarney writes about the Kerry connection to The Belfast Harp Festival of 1792, the most signifi-

cant documented event in the history of harping in Ireland. It was organised to collect and preserve the airs of the ancient Irish instrument. The article includes a fascinating account of a Christmas night of harping and jollity at the residence of Thomas Browne, fourth Viscount Kenmare at Killarney House in the 1750s. “It is designed to whet the appetite of the casual reader of local history, and also to help to quench the appetite of the serious history buff,” editor Maurice O’Keeffe said.

Healy-Rae clashes with Minister for Health | By Sean Moriarty Deputy Michael Healy-Rae says he is going to buy Minister for Health, Simon Harris a dictionary for Christmas after the pair clashed during Question Time in the Dáil this week. Deputy Healy-Rae was seeking answers related an unnamed constituent who has been waiting to see an Orthopaedic Consultant in the South Infirmary in Cork. The minister told Healy-Rae that there was an urgent outpatient waiting list with a wait time in excess of two years. “If you look up the word ‘urgent’ in the dictionary the definition is ‘requiring

immediate action or attention’, but I am not sure what dictionary he is using?” Healy-Rae told the Killarney Advertiser. The Kilgarvan politician said he was still bussing patients to specialist hospitals in Belfast where orthopaedic procedures are carried out in a matter of months from the initial consultation. “I admit that the idea of a trip to Belfast is daunting and I am ashamed that this current Government let it happen but there seems to be no improvement in sight so all I can do to assist my constituents is to continue to take them to Belfast for as long as I am required to,” added Healy-Rae. “In the meantime perhaps someone needs to buy the Minister a dictionary for Christmas.”

Tree of Light to sparkle this Sunday Expert Killarney tree surgeon Billy Tangney scaled new heights as he took on the considerable task of placing the lights on a 100ft tree which will sparkle in the town this Christmas. Billy and his crew are fitting no less than 3,000 bulbs on the huge Californian Redwood tree which is a very familiar landmark on the grounds of St Mary’s Cathedral. They got great assistance assembling the individual bulbs from four students from the nearby St Brendan’s College who were delighted to lend a hand. The Tree of Light will sparkle from this Sunday and the lights will be switched on at a festive season ceremony in the cathedral led by parish administrator Fr Kieran O’Brien. The ceremony, which will commence at 6pm, will feature music, reflections and seasonal prayers, and will involve stu-

dents from the local schools, civic leaders, businesses and community groups. The project is an exciting collaboration between a Christmas in Killarney Festival sub-committee and the Killarney parish and it will create a wonderful focal point in the town in the lead up to and during the festive season. The feature Californian Redwood tree, adjacent to a Famine graveyard on the grounds of the cathedral, is one of the most wonderful visual features in Killarney and it will greet tens of thousands of visitors passing the cathedral on their way to and from Killarney during the festive season.

Burial ground running out claims councillor Loved ones may have to be buried outside the parish of Beaufort, claims one county councillor - who’s calling on the Council to take urgent action. Councillor Michael Cahill told a recent Council meeting the number of burial plots available are very quickly running out in Churchtown Burial Ground and asked them to also take into consideration the fact that Beaufort is a very large parish with a large population. The councillor has proposed that the Council prioritises the acquisition of lands in Beaufort for a new burial ground or an extension to the existing burial ground in Churchtown. "Residents are becoming increasingly concerned that their loved ones may have to be buried outside the parish," he said. The Council, in their reply said that based on current burial rates there are approximately five years remaining in Churchtown Burial Ground, Beaufort. ‘Kerry County Council have had discussions with a number of landowners with a view to both extending the existing burial ground and purchasing a site for a

new burial ground in the area. We have been unsuccessful to date in these discussions. Our efforts to acquire land will continue and any assistance that members may be able to provide would be welcome’.

WEDDING OF THE WEEK

They often say that parts of North West London, like Kilburn and Cricklewood, could be described as the 33rd county of Ireland, such is the concentration of Irish immigrants living in these areas. And like every county, it can be divided into parishes and like every parish, the full cycle of life is experienced by all its inhabitants. For Danielle O’Leary and Conor O’Keeffe, their desire to live under the bright lights of London led them to crossing paths in what could only be described as the Kerry parish within the British capital. The tight-knit community is renowned for looking after its own kind of people. They both found work with the Danny Sullivan Group, one of the UK’s biggest construction employers and a firm well-respected for giving many Kerry men and women the start they needed when they first went over the water. Danielle, who is originally from Portmagee, works in the company’s head office in Park Royal while Conor, from Gneeveguilla, works on major road projects – most recently as a supervisor on the M4 motorway upgrade scheme near Reading. London life is not all work and no play and the Kerry community sticks together on the weekends as much as they do during the working week. Famous pubs like much-lamented and now closed The Kingdom in Kilburn and The Field in Neasden, both owned by Kerry families, were the focal points of many Kerry social gatherings over the years. This allowed the pair to cross paths outside work and, as they say, fate took care of the rest. It ultimately led them to a typical parish wedding, only this time the parishes

crossed from south Kerry into east Kerry via the North Circular Road – the infamous stretch of road that separates their work place in Park Royal and their new home in Ruislip, and within walking distance to the famed London’s GAA county grounds. They were married last month at the Church of Resurrection, Park Road, and celebrated the occasion at the Killarney Oaks Hotel. “It was an amazing day made special by both families and friends and all the London guests,” said Danielle. “The day was a bit wet but didn’t dampen the excitement. We had a fantastic day with family and friends. Fr David Gunn did a lovely Mass and got everybody involved. Local Killarney band Truly Diverse threw a great shindig and we danced the night away.” Special guests on the big day included Danielle’s parents Michael and Geraldine O’Leary and Conor’s parents Denny and Breda O’Keeffe. Bridesmaids were Michelle Moore, Collette O’Sullivan and Julie Sullivan while Bestmen duties fell to Chris Horgan, Fred McGillicuddy and Denis Brosnan. The flowergirls were Cheyenne Moore, Kayla Daly and Emma Daly backed up by the efforts of pageboys Cillian Moore and Jack Harrington. And the couple now have cherished memories as photographs were taken at Ross Castle by local photographer Ian Cronin.

Musicians turn up the volume for sick girl Two concerts organised by a group of well-known Killarney musicians raised €5321.24 for the family of little Callie Kavanagh.

Callie was just six-and-half when she was diagnosed with Ewing's Sarcoma cancer. Following successful specialised treatment in Germany she is now fully recovered and she returned to school in September. However, the German treatment came at a serious financial cost to her parents Adam and Shauna Kavanagh who both had to take extended leave from their own jobs to care for their daughter both at home and in Germany. In June this year, Callie’s grand-uncle, well-known local musician Mick Kavanagh organised a fundraising concert to help offset some of the costs her parents faced during their daughter’s illness. The June concert featured the resident

musicians who usually play in some of the town’s well-known tourist pubs and included Donal Shine who has been performing in The Tatler Jack on Plunkett St for over 40 years. On Friday night at the Avenue Hotel, the group handed over a cheque to the Kavanagh family, which included Callie, who is now eight-years-old. “It was a brilliant night in June and again on Friday night,” said Mick Kavanagh, who is the regular Friday night musician at the Killarney Avenue Hotel. “We did not advertise this time around but everyone who performed in June turned up again including Radio Kerry’s Dermot Moriarty who MC’d both nights.”

The Kerry branch of the Law Society gathered on Friday to pay their respects to retiring District Court Judge Aingeal Ní Chondúin. Doubling up as the Law Society’s annual Christmas party and a celebration for the retiring judge, the event attracted over 60 of Kerry’s best known law professionals. The Killorglin native began her career as a solicitor at her uncle’s practice in her home town in 1974. At the time she was one of very few women solicitors in the county. “She spoke of her career as a solicitor and later as judge,” Killarney lawyer Pat F. O'Connor BL told the Killarney Advertiser. “At her first society dinner in 1974 she was one of two woman and Friday’s

event was a 50/50 mix.” Judge Ní Chondúin was appointed as a District Court judge in the early years of this century and while she presided in cases all over the country she is best known for her work in Cork City. “She was a well-respected judge,” added Mr O’Connor. “She was very measured and very fair – there is nothing hysterical about her.” Judge Ní Chondúin presided over contested criminal and civil cases in Cork and in the past few years she specialised in family law cases and also presided over the juvenile court.

GARDEN MAGIC Students encouraged to

Gardening - By Debby Looney

Debby is available for advice and garden consultations, just call 086 6088156 or email barnhillky@gmail.com

Tips to help the insects hibernate I always think despite the cold these winter months are a beautiful time in the garden. I am not sure whether the birds would agree so it is important to remember them! Birds need a constant supply of fresh water, so try to ensure that it is available to them. I have seen people put nightlights under a dish to stop it from freezing over. A pond is also an excellent source of water for wildlife and personally I leave my pump running at a low setting all winter as moving water does freeze quickly. There are many types of bird feed available, tailored to specific species; mealworms for robins, nyjer for finches and so on, however the important thing is not to give them kitchen scraps. Insects also feel the cold and need places to hibernate. In nature, spent seed heads and rotting logs and debris provide this

shelter, however, in well maintained gardens these hideouts may not exist! There are really cute ‘insect hotels’, ‘ladybird lodges’ and ‘bee B&Bs’ available in most garden centres now, and while these things might look as if they are just a gimmick, they are actually very functional, and necessary in these times of tidy gardens. You can make your own insect hotel, a great project with kids on a rainy day! A bundle of short bamboo sticks is a suitable base as they are hollow. Butterflies need a narrow space as they hibernate with their wings folded, and beetles like a pile of sticks and small planks on the ground. An exceptionally good website for instructions and ideas is www.edenproject.com and search ‘how to build an insect home’. If you have a wormery, it is important to make sure it is either insulated or well protected from any frost. I take mine into the garage in the winter months.

become savvy savers

A project by students to encourage their classmates and others to become savvy savers and learn about the importance of money has been launched in St Brigid’s Secondary School Killarney. The Transition Year class opened what they have branded as the ‘BEE Yourself Bank’ and the big launch took place in the school canteen - with hampers raffled amongst their new customers. During the school year the student bankers plan to hold different events to raise money for the community. The school bank will open every Monday in the school and it will welcome students of all ages to start saving. “The bank is part of the ‘Build A Bank

Challenge’ which hundreds of schools get involved in each year,” teacher Adrienne Brosnan said. “At the end of the process the girls will have to present the idea behind their bank to a panel of judges in the RDS Dublin in March. “It’s great to be part of the ‘Build a Bank Challenge’. This initiative is a wonderful opportunity for students to broaden their horizons and get the experience of running a bank.”

Growing Up with Ireland: A Century of Memories From Our Oldest and Wisest Citizens By Valerie Cox On January 7, 1922 Ireland became a free state. Born into that era of turbulence and hope were the 26 women and men whose stories and memories of a lifetime are captured by cherished Irish journalist Valerie Cox. From recollections of the big snow of 1932, to Eamon de Valera speaking to crowds in a rural town square, to the dawning of electricity, these evocative pieces reflect both a simpler time and a tougher one, where childhood was short and the world of work beckoned from an early age. Also included are stories describing hiding out in Santry Woods when the Black and Tans raided, and pride in a father who was interned in Frongoch after the Easter Rising. Also explored are thoughts on the good and bad of how life has transformed over a cen-

tury. ‘Growing Up With Ireland’ is a compelling portrait of an Ireland in some ways warmly familiar, and in others changed beyond recognition from those who were there at the beginning.

A WEEKLY ROUND-UP OF NEWS • VIEWS FROM KERRY AND AROUND THE WORLD

INSPIRED BY DANNY CASEY

BBC DJ labels ‘Fairytale of New York’ a nasty song A BBC radio DJ is refusing to play The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl’s ‘Fairytale of New York’ after telling listeners this week that he is “no longer comfortable” playing the festive favourite.

The real Lewis Christmas advert A hardware shop in Wales is giving John Lewis a run for Christmas advert of the year – as his budget video received over 50,000 views on YouTube within two days. Thomas Lewis Jones is a third generation operator of Hafod Hardware, Rhayader

Trump CORNER

in mid-Wales. He runs the shop with his grandparents and between them they created a promotional video for just £100. The video stars Thomas’ young son Arthur in the shop helping customers, putting up Christmas decorations and other chores.

BBC Radio Solent disc jockey Alex Dyke told listeners: “I hope I’m not going to ruin your Christmas, but I’ve decided that I am no longer comfortable with playing ‘Fairytale of New York’ by the Pogues and Kirsty MacColl. I think Christmas songs should be about excited children, toys, Christmas trees, snowy streets, ski lodges, reindeer, wrapping paper, Santa, family, peace on earth and love,” he added. “I just find the Pogues’ ‘Fairytale of New York’ a nasty, nasty song."

At the end, Arthur turns into his father, with a slogan encouraging visitors to ‘be a kid this Christmas’. Mr Jones told the PA news agency: "It has been crazy. We've been overwhelmed with nice emails and messages from all over the world."

New documentary on Trump’s Scottish mother A new documentary for Irish TV station TG4, will explore the fascinating life story of Mary MacLeod, the Scottish mother of President Donald Trump. Set to be broadcast on Wednesday, December 11, Máthair Trump follows MacLeod's journey from her childhood Scottish Village, on the Isle of Lewis in the Hebrides

to her marriage into one of the wealthiest property development families in New York. Criss-crossing the Atlantic, the show says it will give a personal portrait of the woman who was the mother to a future President. While we all know about Donald Trump and his father’s background little is known about his late mother’s background. Mary MacLeod was raised in the remote Isle of Lewis

in the Hebrides and was one of the thousands of immigrants who left the island for America in search of a better life. While Donald Trump made few mentions of his late mother while he was a property and media mogul as President, he does often reference his Scottish roots. Running like a thread through the documentary is the story of a very special friendship, between Mary Anne MacLeod and Agnes Stiven, her teenage pen-pal, from the east coast city of Dundee, who in later life wrote a beautiful memoir of their relationship.

Sr Consilio presented with Human Dignity award Sr Consilio Fitzgerald, the founder of Cuan Mhuire, was presented with the fifth Oireachtas Human Dignity Award at a ceremony in Leinster House yesterday (Thursday).

NEW COACHES: Kerry’s Newest pickleball coaches pictured at John Mitchel’s GAA Club in Tralee on Monday.

Kerry’s newest pickleball coaches Kerry Recreation and Sports Partnership, in recognition of the success of Age and Opportunity’s ‘Go For Life Games’ programme, hosted a specific ‘Coach the Coaches’ pickleball coaching day on Monday, at John Mitchel’s GAA Club in Tralee. Pickleball is an exercise that ticks all the boxes and makes for a great social outlet for older people. Combining elements of badminton, tennis and table tennis along with using modified tennis rules, pickleball offers the older person an opportunity to participate in sport played on a court with a paddle as opposed to a racket. “Exercise is good at any age but is especially important as we get older and pickleball offers another opportunity for older people to stay active as well as hav-

ing fun while learning a new skill,” Jimmy Deenihan, Chairperson of Kerry Recreation and Sport Partnership, said. The aim of the coaching day was to train up as many people as possible in order to be able to introduce pickleball to Kerry. According to KRSP Programme Facilitator Debbie Quirke, the day was very successful with 25 participants attending and representative of 11 groups. “As 2020 approaches, we at Kerry Recreation and Sports Partnership plans to provide an opportunity for the older people of Kerry to experience pickleball in a variety of locations, via our public leisure centres and supporting our counties active retirement groups.” For additional information contact Kerry Recreation and Sports Partnership –info@kerryrecreationandsports.ie or 066 7184776.

Pride Festival back in Kerry Kerry Festival of Pride is relaunching in 2020 with an LGBTQ+ Pride parade in Tralee on Saturday, June 13, 2020. The parade will be at the centre of a series of events running throughout the weekend of 12-14 June, including a social night

and a family event. “We are delighted to announce the relaunch of Kerry Festival of Pride in 2020. We are coming together to foster a sense of pride, support and community for LGBTQ+ people living in Kerry,” said Morgan Queeney, Chairperson of Kerry Festival of Pride.

The Human Dignity Award is presented annually by the Oireachtas Human Dignity Group to a person or group for exemplary commitment to the promotion of human dignity. Sr Consilio (Eileen) Fitzgerald who is from the Cork/Kerry border near Brosna was honoured for her decades-long work with men and women suffering from addiction. Her foundation, Cuan Mhuire, provides addiction treatment services and residential rehabilitation to 3,000 people each year. The award comes 53 years after Sr Consilio began her work from a small room in the Convent of Mercy in Athy. The young Mercy Sister, who had trained as a nurse and midwife, was moved by the plight of the ‘men of the road’ who came to seek a night’s lodgings in St Vincent’s Hospital, Athy, where she was working. To cope with the growing numbers seeking her assistance, she soon opened a facility in the convent’s dairy. Today, there are five treatment centres around Ireland, including a women-only facility in Cork, as well as seven transition facilities throughout the country. Acknowledging the award, Sr Consilio noted that people at every level of soci-

ety were struggling with addiction. “We will keep going,” she said. “The challenges are great. Demand for our service far exceeds our capacity to help people. But we trust in the Lord and in the great people who support our work every day.” Cuan Mhuire is currently fundraising for a new purpose-built women’s treatment centre in Athy.

National Children's Hospital to cost even more The National Children's Hospital will cost at least another €2 million and costs could soar even further a Dáil committee has been told. The Chairman of the board of the National Children's Hospital told the committee that construction has been delayed again and that this and other issues could cost millions more.

Fred Barry told the Public Accounts Committee yesterday (Thursday) that the cost of the hospital will go over budget by between €2m and €2.9m this year due to construction inflation. While the initial cost of the hospital was estimated at €650m it is currently costing €1.73bn with further increases likely.

ers to pay to access its various channels. The new radio station, U2X RADIO, will feature music from U2's acclaimed decades-long career; never before heard interviews and live concert recordings; favourites and surprises from the archive; plus content celebrating their Dublin roots.

Fitting into your little black dress If you’re worrying about fitting into the little black dress in time for the festive season then the Universal Contour Wrap may be just for you. It’s starts with the body covered with sea clay, enriched with minerals, salt and clay, followed with up to 30 bandages wrapped in a specific technique to lift and contour the body. Electrodes are applied to the thighs and stomach using a faradic current to aid the lymphatic flow and detoxification process which is excellent to get rid of cellulite. Finally a heated blanket is added just for comfort, and this will help you sweat a little. After treatment you have a three-day detox programme to stick to at home. This is a very important stage. During the actual treatment your pores open and the sea clay goes into the skin just enough to help soak up toxins and tighten - so you cannot shower for three to four days. Obviously you can wash the areas required but you must leave the

5

clay in for the best results on the thighs and stomach, back of arms and a few other areas. So you see ladies, the wrap is a great treatment if you have lost a lot of weight, are about to start losing weight and need the motivation to get started. A great way to start the party season is to get a good body detox and deep cleanse the facial skin - the ultimate party preparation. Anyone who buys a course of the body wraps this week will receive a complimentary facial with their first wrap. However, you must mention this article when booking. Call Jill to avail of this exclusive Killarney Advertiser offer on 064 6632966.

Children showcased their swimming skills in the Aquila Club last Friday for their annual swim gala. Pictured at the front were: Jack and Kate Ahern. Middle: Laura Ahern and Gemma Murphy. Back: Dieter Gogsch (Aquila Club), Claire and Avril Ahern.

Children showcase swimming skills

Local children got to showcase their swimming skills to family and friends on Friday at the Aquila Club annual swim gala. The event, in the Gleneagle Hotel, was a fantastic success with over 70 swimmers competing from Killarney and surrounds, as well as 12 participants in the ‘Parents and Staff’ race. All the children got tremendous joy watching their parents and the swim teachers try their best to win a medal, with the eventual winner being Cody O’ Meara. The aim of the gala was to promote participation in sport and in particular swimming, explained Dieter Gogsch, Aquila Club Swim Co-ordinator. “We believe swimming is such an essential life skill. All the children received a special commemorative certificate and a goodie bag with medals going to the individual race winners. He added that swimming is one of the fastest growing sports in Ireland and their team endeavours to promote the health and fitness to both children and

adults alike. “It is so important that adults join in and experience the sport with their children. This really helps motivate the children to stick with a sport, particularly as they get older.” One of the highlights of the swim gala were the Under 7 swimmers as well as the novelty relay races which included the wheelbarrow race and family relay race. “Both races were a closely fought affair with the amazingly talented Alexandra Biblokhvost and Sarah Reidy winning the wheelbarrow race. The winners of the Aquila Club perpetual trophy in the family race were the Roarty family, with the Aherns runners-up and the Doolan family in third place. The gala was a great way to round off a very successful year for swimming lessons at the Aquila Club and we look forward to welcoming all the swim lessons back in the New Year.”

Funds for defibrillators | By Sean Moriarty

The Kilcummin community will have up to eight defibrillators scattered across key locations in the parish by early next year thanks to the fundraising efforts of locals. The Kilcummin Defibrillator Group (KDG) was set up less than three years ago and so far they have installed seven units across the parish including ones at the village post office and Coolick and Anabla national schools. Last week the Kilcummin Community Alert Group (KCA) presented a cheque for €500 euro to KDG. The money, which

was raised locally, will go towards the upkeep of the seven current units. There are also ambitions to place an eighth unit at the Killarney Burial Ground, with KDG sharing the cost of this one with the Heart of Killarney group. “We like to have them all linked up,” local councillor and project supporter Marie Moloney told the Killarney Advertiser. “The one in Anabla National School, one of the first we installed, has been utilised five times in the three years it has been there.” KDG offer free regular training sessions for the use of defibrillators with the next session pencilled in for early next year.

COLLEGE LIFE: Transition Year students from St Brigid’s Secondary School got a glimpse of college life on Monday when they attended the UL Taster Day in Limerick.

Transition Year students get a glimpse of college life | By Saoirse Coffey, Transition Year student On Monday, 30 Transition Year students from St Brigid’s Secondary School travelled to the University of Limerick for the annual UL Taster Day. Student Saoirse Coffey tells the Killarney Advertiser how they got on.

The day was designed specifically with Transition Year students in mind, with the aim of providing some insight into the courses offered in UL. Students had the opportunity to sit in on a wide range of 30 minute lectures and ask any questions they had in relation to the course.

Upon arrival, we were given a timetable illustrating the time and location of the lectures available, including Law and Criminology, Psychology, Sociology, Performing Arts, Economics, Music and Dance, Journalism, Modern languages, Linguistics, English and Irish. We were free to attend as many lectures as we wished. We were informed of the basic details of the courses such as entry re-

quirements, length of course, and some of the key modules within the course. We also had access to student facilities between lectures, and enjoyed having a look around campus. The day was very informative and provided a realistic glimpse into the courses UL offered at third level. While it was very beneficial to attend lectures I already had an interest in Psychology. However, my mind was also opened to courses I would never have considered, such as Performing Arts and Journalism. I also have a better understanding of college life in general. While we are only in Transition Year, it is never too early to start considering options for our future, and the UL Taster Day was an excellent starting point.

HEALTH & FITNESS Advice - By Brian Foley Brian is available for advice and fitness consultations, Call 087 403 0894 or email info@activate.ie • www.activate.ie

How to navigate the social calendar Last week we spoke about how waiting for the “perfect time” to put healthier practices into place usually means they never happen, and we as humans need accountability. By this time, you should be practicing eating slowly and putting a bedtime routine in place. Don’t worry if you haven’t absolutely nailed these practices, it takes time and effort, so keep working on them. This week we are looking at what to do around the Christmas party season and how to enjoy your nights out whilst still managing to stay accountable to your goals. Nights out and social occasions are inevitable, more so this time of year than any other. So you want to be fitter and healthier but also want a life - this is possible. You don’t have to live like a hermit to live a healthier lifestyle, on the contrary, social occasions are important to allow you to relax and spend time with friends and family and maintain a healthy balanced lifestyle. So how do you navigate the social calendar at this time of year? Firstly, I’m not saying you should head out every weekend between here and Christmas. If you have a specific health and fitness goal in mind, certain changes in lifestyle must be made. But when you do decide to head out for your work Christmas party for example, here are some helpful tips to keep in mind: • Try and choose clear alcoholic beverages such as vodka, gin and tonic/spar-

kling water • Ensure you eat a wholesome breakfast and lunch that day, with protein and satiating vegetables forming the basis of these meals • Drink plenty water • Avoid the chipper at the end of your night out Week 2 Action Items: Continuing on your practice and habits from Week 1, try to incorporate the following along with your initial habits. Stop eating at 80% full. • To lose fat, you usually have to eat less than you do now • “80% full” is not a specific number, but rather an idea: Eating until “just satisfied” or “no longer hungry” but not full or stuffed • This habit continues to teach appetite awareness, building intuitive understanding and control of your hunger/ fullness. Over time, you can learn to sense your own hunger and satiety cues properly, as well as distinguish physical hunger from cravings. Eat lean protein with each meal • We need protein for almost every metabolic process in the body. Making sure to get enough protein will help preserve lean mass i.e. bone and muscle, as well as help you feel fuller for longer • his is an "easy" habit that is easily understandable and generally well accepted as do-able by most people. • Simple portion size guideline, use your hand size! – For women: one palm per meal

HELPING THOSE IN NEED: Mary Devane, with Wesley Maher, Daniel and Ryan Maher, attended the lighting of the Christmas tree at the Brehon Hotel which was in aid of the St Vincent De Paul Christmas charity appeal to help needy children in Kerry. Photo: Valerie O’Sullivan

Brehon party supports Kerry's needy children Armed with toys to donate to St Vincent de Paul, very generous boys and girls from right around Kerry gathered in The Brehon, Killarney on Sunday for the annual Lighting of The Brehon Christmas Tree. Over one hundred children and their parents attended the afternoon of festivities which included performances by the St Brigid’s Secondary School Carollers and The Gleneagle Concert Band as well as festive treats, hot chocolate and mulled wine. “We wish to thank everyone for donating toys and money to this very worthy cause,” Sinead McCarthy, General Manager of The Brehon, said. “Thank

!

you also to Santa Claus, who took time out of his very busy schedule to call and meet all the boys and girls and switch on the lights on our amazing Christmas Tree.” The Brehon Christmas Tree party is organised in aid of St Vincent De Paul and anyone who wishes to donate to this worthy cause can bring new or unused toys to The Brehon over the next two weeks.

Electric car interest increasing in Kerry The number of pure electric cars on Kerry roads is on the increase according to new figures released by the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI). The switch to electric is going to take some time but there has been a noticeable increase in demand, locally for such cars. So far this year, there were 47 new electric cars sold in the county, an increase of 25 on the same period last year. Petrol-electric cars are also becoming more-popular with 193 such models leaving Kerry showrooms this year.

Last year, 154 such cars were sold in the county. Hybrids are gaining popularity, 16 cars were bought this year, an increase of seven in 2018. While diesel cars continue to be the most popular engine in Kerry, sales are falling rapidly. Last year 1,499 diesel cars were sold in Kerry, but this year only 1,200 such vehicles hit the road. The same applies for petrol models, 849 sold so far this year compared to 976 for the same period last year. Overall, nearly 350 fewer new cars were sold in Kerry this year compared to 2019.

Gaelscoil celebrates International Day Cultures from 19 different countries were celebrated in one local school on Friday as part of their first ever International Day. | By Michelle Crean Organised by the Parents Council of Gaelscoil Faithleann, the idea was to recognise and celebrate the many cultures represented in the school. There was a wonderful African drumming display for the pupils, food from countries from all over the world and stories from many of the parents present, Chair of the Parents Council, Mary Carroll, explained. “Often in Gaelscoileanna we might not realise there is a large diversity of cultures represented,” Mary said. “We have counted 19 different countries amongst our parent community, from Mauritius to Zimbabwe to Portugal and Chile. Our inaugural International Day was full of colour, fun and learning, with flags, food, music and Brazilian martial art! Parents came in to each class to talk about their culture - we had parents from Nigeria, Latvia, New Zealand, USA, Chile, India, Portugal, Poland and the Philip-

pines. The children loved to hear facts about these countries and to realise all the diversity in the school.” There was a wonderful African drumming display for the pupils and a big thank you to Wilson da Silva of Killarney Movement and Fitness Club for his fabulous display of the Brazilian martial art, Capoeira which left the children enthralled, she added. “Food from Pakistan, Iraq, the Philippines, amongst others was on display for tasting. We are very grateful to KASI, the Killarney Immigrant Support Network, for their support with our day. We plan to have this as an annual event from now on and its importance in recognising other cultures and making children aware of the value of diversity is significant. It is a fabulous opportunity for children to meet directly with people from other countries and to hear first-hand what it is like to live there.”

Softly the leaves of memory fall, Gently I bend to gather them all, Unseen, unheard, you are always near, So missed, so loved, so very dear. I miss you now, my heart is sore, As time goes by I miss you more, Your loving smile, your precious face, No-one else can fill that space. May the winds of love blow softly, And whisper in your ear, That we love and truly miss you, As it dawns another year.

Dad What I would give if I could stay, I will go and see my Dad today, To hear your voice, to see your smile, To sit and talk with you a while, To get together in the same old way, This is my dearest wish today. Too dearly loved to be forgotten by your daughter Marguerite, son-in-law Neil and grandchildren Ella and Ethan. Dad I did not know that morning, What sadness the day would bring, You were gone before I knew it, And I could not do a thing. I did not see you close your eyes, Or hear your last sigh, I was not there to hold your hand, Or say a last goodbye. It broke my heart to lose you, Your parting caused such pain, Thank you for the years we shared, Until we meet again. Loved and missed every day by your daughter Michelle, son-in-law John, grandchildren Clara, Emma and Cialann, and great-granddaughter Layla Mai. Dad If I could write a story, It would be the greatest ever told, Of a kind and loving father, Who had a heart of gold. He never looks for praises, Was never one to boast, He went on quietly working, For those he loved the most. I remember all he taught me, The good times that we had, Glad to be his daughter And proud to call him Dad. Always loved and sadly missed your daughter Tracy, grandchildren Christopher and Alanna and great grandchildren Sofia and Caleb. xxx Dad When God came and took you Dad, He knew what you were worth, He took the finest Dad, That ever walked this earth.

A mass and a prayer are all that I can give, And those you shall have as long as I live, Leave my body wherever it may lie, But remember my soul at the altar of God. Always remembered by your wife Mary. Anniversary Mass on Sunday December 15th at 12 noon in St Mary’s Cathedral Killarney.

Sadly missed and always remembered by his brothers, sisters and their families.

Say this prayer three times for three days and your favour will be granted. Never known to fail. Must promise publication of prayer. K.O.C.

RIVALS: Daithí Casey of Dr Crokes is tackled by Legion midfielder Billy McGuire. Both Killarney clubs will be keen to finish their year on a high.

Make or break Sunday’s all-Killarney O’Donoghue Cup final could be a season-defining moment for Legion and Dr Crokes, writes Adam Moynihan EAST KERRY CHAMPIONSHIP: FINAL

_________________________________________________________________________

Legion

Dr Crokes

Killarney Legion v Dr Crokes Sunday at 2.15pm Fitzgerald Stadium Losing to your fiercest rivals is never a pleasant experience but the outcome of Sunday’s Killarney derby, an O’Donoghue Cup final no less, will be particularly excruciating for either Legion or the Crokes. The fact of the matter is that neither of these sides have achieved what they set out to achieve in 2019. Though they have sampled contrasting levels of success in recent years, both Legion and Crokes started out in January expecting to win. Competitions have come and gone, however, and so too have opportunities to pick up silver-

ware. For Stephen Stack and Edmund O’Sullivan, this weekend’s East Kerry Championship final could be a season-defining moment.

ELUSIVE Unfortunately for this undeniably talented Legion team, that coveted piece of silverware remains as elusive as ever. My clubmates won’t thank me for bringing it up but it’s now 25 years since that Club Championship victory over Waterville, the club’s last triumph of note at senior level. This will be Legion’s fourth O’Donoghue Cup final

since 2013 (fifth including the 2014 replay) but, remarkably, you have to go all the way back to 1976 for the club’s last win at district level. It would mean an awful lot to this current crop of players to get over the line this time out. And for manager Stephen Stack, the next 60 minutes of football will make all the difference when it comes to grading his first year in charge. It might seem harsh but that’s the nature of the beast, and no one will be more acutely aware of that than Stack himself. If Legion can upset the odds and beat the Crokes, the rather limp County Championship exit at the hands of St Brendan’s will be a distant memory.

TROPHYLESS

For a generation of Crokes players and supporters, winning is all they’ve

known. The club’s senior team have won at least one major trophy (i.e. County Championship, Club Championship, O’Donoghue Cup, Division 1 of the County League, Munster Club or All-Ireland Club) in each of the past 16 seasons, an incredible run that has seen them capture no fewer than 40 titles. Now, unexpectedly, Crokes stand on the brink of their first trophyless season since 2003. The All-Ireland, Club Championship and County Championship finalists will be favourites to beat the Legion – they have done so twice already this season – but it’s certainly an uncomfortable position to find themselves in.

MATCH-UPS

Legion’s preparations have been hindered by injuries to some key players,

perhaps most notably two of their Kerry panelists, James O’Donoghue and Danny Sheahan. O’Donoghue picked up the sponsor’s Man of the Match award in last weekend’s semi-final against Gneeveguilla despite being forced off midway through the second half with a lower leg injury. The former Footballer of the Year appeared to be in some distress and you don’t need me to tell you that he would be a huge loss if he’s unavailable for the final. Sheahan, meanwhile, has had surgery on a shoulder problem so he will not be available. The tough-tackling full back, who was called up to Peter Keane’s extended panel during the 2019 season, is another big loss for Legion as he would be the natural choice to pick up Crokes’ top scorer, Tony Brosnan. Team captain Pádraig Lucey missed the semi-final but he is expected to make his return on Sunday. Jonathan Lyne and Podge O’Connor have been in really good form of late and bainisteoir Stack will need to get serious performances from them, and from everyone else, if his side are to bridge that 25-year gap.

STRONG

For their part, Dr Crokes had to make do without experienced defenders Fionn Fitzgerald and David O’Leary for their semi-final while David Shaw and Jordan Kiely remain longerterm casualties. They still had quite a strong line-up for that victory over

Spa, however, with the front eight of Johnny Buckley, Daithí Casey, Micheál Burns, Gavin O’Shea, Brian Looney, Tony Brosnan, Mark O’Shea and Kieran O’Leary looking particularly imposing. Burns kicked five points in a Man-ofthe-Match display while the younger O’Shea cousin, Mark, chipped in with 1-1 from full forward. Tony Brosnan added 1-4, a relatively low return by his extremely high standards. Normally the O’Donoghue Cup is an added bonus for the Crokes but considering the way the year has gone so far, Sunday’s final takes on far greater significance. Motivation will be at an all-time high because, in truth, the only way 2019 could get any worse for them is if they lose to Legion in the O’Donoghue Cup final. That’s the difference here: victory for Legion would make their year, defeat for Crokes would break theirs.

VERDICT

The Crokes, who are gunning for their 13th East Kerry Championship since the turn of the century, are favourites. There’s no denying that. Legion will be hoping that three final defeats in seven months has had an adverse affect on the old enemy’s confidence but they’ll need everyone at it on the day regardless. If couple key players are unavailable, it obviously makes things more difficult. One thing’s for sure: it won’t be one for the faint of heart.

Crokes see off Spa to book final spot | By Eamonn Fitzgerald

EAST KERRY CHAMPIONSHIP: SEMI-FINAL _________________________________________________________________________

Dr Crokes

2-18 | Spa 1-18

FITZGERALD STADIUM This eagerly awaited clash between an experienced Crokes team, dominant in Kerry and elsewhere this past decade, and a young Spa side backboned by members of Kerry champions East Kerry lived up to expectations in a high-scoring encounter. Spa had the better start with three early points from captain Mike O’Donoghue, Ryan O’Carroll and Michael Foley. Crokes were off target until the 7th minute when impressive full forward Mark O’Shea opened their tally with a point. That was quickly followed by a point from Micheál Burns, who caused all kinds of problems when he ran at the Spa defence. Daithí Casey levelled the game at 0-3 each in the 9th minute and Shane Murphy denied Spa a goal in the 13th minute with a great save. Burns made a great sally through the Spa defence and Tony Brosnan scored the resultant goal in the 25th minute to give Crokes the lead on a scoreline of

1-5 to 0-7. The impressive Evan Cronin, Dan O’Donoghue and Mike O’Donoghue brought Spa to 0-8 while Brosnan (twice) and Casey scored to leave Crokes leading by one. Michael McCarthy and Mike O’Donoghue made it 0-10 for Spa and Crokes led by a point at half-time. Michael Potts got Crokes off to a good start on the resumption with a well-taken point. Further points from Brosnan, Buckley and Burns (two) kept Crokes ahead while McCarthy and Cronin pointed for Spa, who now trailed by 1-13 to 0-13. Then came the decisive score in the 45th minute when Crokes’ towering full forward Mark O’Shea rose highest in the Spa square to punch home a goal. Crokes now led 2-13 to 0-13 and a pair of points from Tony Brosnan opened up an eightpoint lead. Spa, however, refused to yield. Two points from Evan Cronin and a Michael Foley goal reduced the deficit, but

Crokes responded with points from Burns (before he was black-carded), Buckley and Brosnan. Spa were not finished as they added three more points, but Crokes held firm and won 2-18 to 1-18. ____________________________________________________ LEGION 0-15 GNEEVEGUILLA 0-10 Legion advanced to the O’Donoghue Cup final with a commanding second half performance against Gneeeveguilla at the Fitzgerald Stadium on Saturday last. The impressive Jamie O’Sullivan opened the scoring with a Legion point in the 2nd minute but Gneeveguilla full forward Shane O’Sullivan equalised one minute later. Gneeveguilla captain and goalkeeper Patrick O’Riordan made a great save from Jamie O’Sullivan in the 5th minute and James O’Donoghue scored the first of his five points two minutes later. But then Gneeveguilla took over. Con Buckley equalised in the 8th minute and Pádraig Doyle put them ahead for the first time one minute later with a well taken free. Another free from Con Buckley made it 0-4 points to 0-2 in favour of Gneeveguilla. John O’Leary made it 5-2 before O’Donoghue pulled one back.

Con Buckley continued to be a thorn in the Legion side, adding two more points to make it 0-7 to 0-3 in the 20th minute. Unfortunately, Buckley had to retire injured and that was a big blow to Gneeveguilla. Legion forwards were repelled by the tenacious Gneeveguilla defence. In the 25th minute Conor Keane had his first score from a free, but Shane O’Sullivan replied quickly to make it 8-4. Jack O’Neill and John O’Leary exchanged points to leave Gneeveguilla leading by 0-9 to 0-5 at the interval.

SECOND HALF

Legion were the masters in the second half as Gneeveguilla’s only score was a point in the 49th minute by Shane O’Sullivan. James ‘Donoghue, Legion’s best player, showed the way with two points. Billy McGuire and Jack O’Neill added points and Conor Keane tied the scores at 10 points each in the 39th minute. James O’Donoghue put them ahead and Conor Keane and Jamie O’Sullivan stretched the lead by the 45th minute when James O’Donoghue hobbled off with a leg injury. His replacement, Finbarr Murphy, and Conor Keane completed the scoring.

A “conscious decision” to not enjoy Christmas... Have you ever heard the like? Writing exclusively for the Killarney Advertiser, The Secret Kerry Footballer reveals what’s really going on inside the GAA Hurlers are mad. I was standing next to Jackie Tyrrell at some launch up in Croke Park a few years ago and while we were hanging around for our photo to be taken, I decided to strike up a conversation. Just to be nice, like. “Well Jackie. How’s the form?” “What do ya mean by that?!” he snapped, his eyes widening. “I know I wasn’t at the races against Tipp. I know that more than any man!” By this stage, his nose was touching mine. “Jesus, relax boy,” I said. “I’m only here to sell a bit of protein milk.” “Believe you me, I’ll be back,” he growled through gritted teeth. “We’ll be back. Ye’ll rue the day ye ever wrote off Kilkenny!” Then he ripped off his Avonmore t-shirt and sprinted off down the tunnel under the Hogan Stand. I turned and made eye contact with Cillian O’Connor, who was only a young fella at the time. He was rightly shook by the whole thing. There’s a joke to be made there about Mayo footballers in Croke Park but that’d be easy pickings. Much like the Mayo footballers in Croke Park.

Kilkenny won the All-Ireland the following year and Tyrrell was immense. When he got his hands on the Liam McCarthy, he turned and glared into the nearest TV camera and put his finger to his lips. “He has silenced his critics,” Ger Canning exclaimed. Cillian texted me and asked if it was aimed at me. It probably was. The point of my story is that hurlers are mad. I know this from dealing with them (from a safe distance) for many years. But I was still shocked by Austin Gleeson’s recent comments about cancelling Christmas. The Waterford hurler said that he has always enjoyed his Christmases but this year he has made a “conscious decision” to not do that so he can train and be ready for next season. A conscious decision to not enjoy Christmas. Have you ever heard the like? Even the German and British soldiers in World War I took a break from shooting each other’s heads off on Christmas Day. But no, that’s not good enough for Austin Gleeson. If Austin Gleeson was on the front line on Christmas Day, 1914, he would have spent his morning analysing the other army’s likely formations and his afternoon doing the beep test. And the lads having the craic out in no man’s land. No beer for Christmas. Lord God. The

way the GAA has gone, alcohol is effectively banned for 95% of the year as it is. And now they want to take Christmas off us as well? As a footballer in Kerry, the festive season is the only time you can safely go on the lash without fear of repercussions. If you go out drinking at any stage from January to November, there’s a decent chance you’ll look across the bar and see some auld lad judging you from behind his pint. There’ll be nothing verbal but he’ll tell you with his eyes. “Ye’ve a game on Sunday.” Yeah. Good man. Of course, the irony of it all is that back in the auld lad’s day, beer bans didn’t even exist. He might have been advised to stay away from the top shelf the night before a county final but that was about the size of it.

Our club secretary caught me flooring Sambucas in Mustang’s one night before an O’Donoghue Cup semi-final and he had a right cut off me. Very high and mighty stuff altogether. I contemplated putting the head down and taking my bollocking but then he brought up what I allegedly did on that Kerry trip to Orlando. I had to say something. “My father told me that when you played, you were encouraged to go drinking the night before a match because there was no way a hangover could make you any worse.” I wasn’t long quietening him. And we won the following day as well. To be fair, Paul Murphy scored 1-4 off me and I was whipped at half-time. But look, it’s a team game.

Unsurprisingly, Dr Crokes players dominate the final selection with 10 in total making the cut. The Killarney club were by far and away the most successful team of the past 10 years, claiming an unprecedented seven titles between 2010 and 2019. South Kerry, who were champions in 2015 and runners-up in 2017, have two representatives on the star-studded team while Austin Stacks, Rathmore and Dingle have one apiece.

A number of players were virtually universal picks but the voting was close on other positions. Two were decided by just a single vote.

THE TEAM Shane Murphy gets the nod between the posts having helped Dr Crokes to titles in 2016, 2017 and 2018. Murphy was one of four Crokes keepers to win the County Championship in the 2010s. Kieran Cremin, Alan Kelly and David Moloney

AUTOMATIC: South Kerry's Bryan Sheehan was one of the top vote-getters.

were the others. It’s an all-Crokes full back line with seven-time winners John Payne, Mike Moloney and Fionn Fitzgerald all earning their spots at 2, 3 and 4. Payne earned a reputation as being one of the county’s toughest man-markers over the course of the decade and the tenacious defender was the top vote-getter amongst the backs. Another seven-time champion, Eoin Brosnan, anchors the half-back line with Killian Young of South Kerry and Aidan O’Mahony on the wings. The midfield pairing was an open and shut case as Johnny Buckley (Dr Crokes) and Bryan Sheehan (South Kerry) raked in the vast majority of the votes for that department. The accomplished trio of Brian Looney, Colm Cooper and Daithí Casey form an all-Crokes half forward line with teammate Kieran O’Leary, Kieran Donaghy (Austin Stacks) and Paul Geaney (Dingle) rounding off the front six. Gooch was the most popular selection overall with Looney, O’Leary, Buckley, Sheehan and Payne also accumulating a large percentage of the votes.

SELECTION

The Team of the Decade was voted for by readers of the Killarney Advertiser with sports editor Adam Moynihan also getting a regular, non-weighted vote. Commenting on the final selection, Adam said he was happy enough with the team, although he felt that a few players could “feel a bit hard done by”. “Dr Crokes were always going to dominate this team, and rightly so,” he said. “They won seven out of 10 titles so 10 is probably a fair number; you could probably make an argument for one or two more of their players as well. But it’s important to recognise the other champions as well and Bryan Sheehan and Kieran Donaghy in particular simply had to make the team. “East Kerry are the only winning team not represented and I think that comes down to the fact that they only really came into the picture in the last two years. The future looks bright for them and who knows, they could well have a few players on the Team of the 2020s.”

Double delight for Killarney crews on Historic Rally

There were massive local celebrations at the finish of Saturday’s Rentokil-Initial Killarney Historic Rally as two local crews claimed the honours in the rally’s two main categories. | By Sean Moriarty Rob Duggan and Ger Conway dominated the overall historic element of the rally while Colin O’Donoghue and Seán Collins took a popular victory in this very competitive modified section. Duggan and Conway, driving a West Wales Motorsport-run Ford Escort Mk2, led their section from start to finish. They withheld a mid-event challenge from World Rally Championship stars Craig Breen and Paul Nagle – a spin on a greasy section of road on the second run over Moll’s Gap cost the Waterford/Kerry pairing their shot at the title - but Duggan and Conway were deserving winners. Duggan goes into the history books as the first ever former winner of the modified category in the rally to win the overall historic title, while Conway was celebrating his third success on the event having previously won it on two occasions alongside Denis Moynihan. New for this year, the overall winners of the rally were presented with the Maurice Nagle Memorial Trophy, named in honour of the man who founded the Killarney Historic Rally. Paul would have dearly loved to get his hands on the tro-

phy named after his father but it wasn’t to be this year. Nagle was, however, named as the Kerry County Co-Driving champion following his victory on two days of the Rally of the Lakes and his second place on Saturday. O’Donoghue and Seán Collins took a popular victory in the very competitive modified section. They were third fastest over Moll’s Gap in the morning, giving best to Gary Kieran and Marin McGee, but the local crew overtook their Cavan and Donegal rivals on the run over Ballaghbeama to take a lead they would never relinquish. It was a proud moment for Colin’s father, Kevin, a successful driver in his own right, when he greeted his son at the finish ramp on Saturday evening. Other local drivers to do well over the weekend included Alan Ring who finished seventh in his BMW M3 and Kilgarvan’s Helen O'Sullivan who guided Denis Cronin to ninth.

CLASS WINNERS

Todd Falvey got the upper hand over his nephew, Mark, as a damaged rear axle on Mark’s Escort proved to be his downfall. Just four seconds separated their two Es-

WINNERS: Rob Duggan and Ger Conway (overall winners of the Rentokil Initial Killarney Historic Rally), Michael O'Mahoney (Rentokil Initial Ireland Managing Director), Colin O'Donoghue and Seán Collins Rentokil Initial Killarney Historic Rally prizegiving ceremony at The Gleneagle Hotel on Saturday. corts at the finish. Pat Looney and Ronald Riordan won class C3 in their Ford Escort RS2000 while Donal O'Connor and Ann Hutchinson were third in a similar car. Diarmuid Lynch and Eleanor Looney, driving an Austin Mini Cooper, had to use Rally2 rules to get to the finish but their efforts earned them second in their class. Bob Moran and Adam Power were third in their class in another Escort. Beaufort’s John Falvey was on pace note duty for Billy McCarthy and they finished 44th. Noel O'Sullivan and Nicholas Burke secured third in their class in their Ford Escort Mk2 while Raymond O'Neill and Padraig O'Donovan were fifth. Pat Cashman guided Don Moynihan to 59th. It was Moynihan’s first rally in 12 years. Paudie O'Callaghan and Danny Murphy broke the Escort dominance by taking their Toyota Starlet to fifth in class. Tadhg O'Sullivan had Liam Brennan on the notes for the first time while John Hickey and Denny Greaney brought their

hastily-built Toyota Corolla home in 72nd place under Rally2 regulations. Damien Fleming guided Monaghan’s Raymond Conlon to fourth overall in the modified rally in their Toyota Corolla Twin Cam. Denis Hickey and Seán Nolan admitted to getting off to a slow start in their Escort but a better run in the afternoon netted them 14th overall. Andrew Duggan and Tara Duggan delivered their brand new Escort to 21st overall.

RETURNING LOCALS

Several local competitors who are now based abroad made the trip home especially for the rally. London-based Killarney man Mike Smith won class C2 in his Hillman Avenger. Jack Kelleher, brother of county mayor Niall, came from Australia to contest his first rally but had to rely on Rally2 rules to get to the finish. Shane Buckley returned from his London base to guide his cousin Aidan Buckley to fifth overall in the modified category.
