“Times Like These Remind You Of How Lucky We Are To Call Killarney Home”
Words: Adam Moynihan
This week’s opinion piece is all positive and not even remotely contentious for a change. It’s too nice outside to be debating. There surely won’t be any controversy over this one. Surely. Times like these remind you of how lucky we are to call Killarney home. The place is looking great, the sun is shining and the streets are buzzing. It’s an unbelievable town. The unprecedented spell of savage weather is obviously swaying me but it doesn’t take three weeks of sunshine to come to that realisation. All it takes is a nice summer day to be re-
minded of how special Killarney is. The combination of the people and the surroundings make it an exceptional town to live in, and when you add in the eclectic mix of visitors and some clear skies it just tips it over the edge. They say you have to go away to come back and I certainly have a newfound appreciation of Killarney since returning home. There’s nowhere like it in the world. But sometimes there when the weather is bad, you’d genuinely be cursing Killarney and Ireland in general. I live a short five-minute walk from the office
but it can be a horrible five-minute walk when the rain is spitting in your face. You’d be thinking, “why do we even live here?” It’s gas what the weather can do to you. There’s no pleasing some people though. We all know someone who constantly complains about the rain and when you sit there listening to them go on and on, you think to yourself, “if we had a heatwave they’d complain about that too.” And lo and behold, we’re having a heatwave and the same people are declaring that it’s “too hot”. Moaning about the weather
must be just ingrained into our DNA. If I hear one more person saying that we could do with a bit of rain, I’ll crack. Let there be drought. We all know it won’t last too long more; it could be raining by the time you read this. Just enjoy the sun while it’s here. And when it does rain, can we limit our negative comments to, “that’s the end of it now”? If it rains for the rest of the year, and next summer is rubbish too, so be it. We should be barred from complaining about the weather for a good two years. We’re having a proper summer in 2018. This will do us for a while.
A Forum For Everyone In Killarney Words: Adam Moynihan
We want the Killarney Advertiser to be a forum for everyone in Killarney so if you have something to say, we’d be more than happy to share it. No matter how big or how small your story, send it on to me and I’ll do my best to pass it on to our readers. One of the more enjoyable aspects of being a jour-
nalist is engaging with readers and hearing what they make of your opinions. I’ve addressed some contentious enough issues in my six months in the job and getting positive feedback is great. Having said that, reactions aren’t always glowing, but that’s all part of it as well. If we all felt the same way about
everything, we’d have nothing to talk about. Getting in touch with feedback or a story of your own couldn’t be easier. Just drop us an email at newsdesk@killarneyadvertiser.ie or call 064 66 32215 and ask for Adam. We look forward to hearing from you.

Burst Water Main Causes Extensive Damage There were incredible scenes in Killarney on Sunday as a burst pipe caused a massive amount of damage in the Deerpark area of the town. Onlookers were left dumbfounded when a water main from Sheheree to Coolcorcoran burst near the Park Road not far from Aldi and Tesco supermarkets. The road above the pipe collapsed and water overflowed above the surface as roughly 200 residents were left stranded. Reports suggested that 10,000 people were left without water as a result of the incident but supplies have since been restored. As our pictures show, extensive emergency works were required to remedy the situation on Sunday night. The massive crater has been refilled and the road has been repaired. Meanwhile, water restrictions will remain in place over the weekend due to the extremely warm weather, with Irish Water issuing a hosepipe ban which will be in effect from today until Tuesday, July 31. “We thank the public for their conservation efforts so far and we urge them to continue to conserve water to help protect water supplies now and over the coming months,” a statement said. “Met Éireann advised that there has been little or no rain over the last 30 days, with an average soil moisture deficit of 60mm meaning even if it did rain, no water would reach our water sources for at least a week, as it will be absorbed by the ground.” Irish Water may review the scope of the restrictions over the coming weeks.

There was a major boost for local employment this week as Irish-international fintech company Fexco announced a significant expansion of its operations headquartered in Killorglin, creating 175 new jobs over three years. The jobs form part of Fexco’s expansion strategy reinforcing the south west’s position as the driving force of Ireland’s fintech industry. TOWNTALK Former Eastenders Actress To Star In Legally Blonde At INEC Words: Adam Moynihan
Ahead of the opening night of Legally Blonde: The Musical, I caught up with one of the stars of the show, Rita Simons. Rita, who will be a familiar face to many of our readers having played Roxy Mitchell in Eastenders for the best part of 10 years, says she’s excited about visiting Killarney. “I haven’t been before but I’m looking forward to it,” she said. “I’ve got a very good friend who’s from Killarney so she’s going to show me around. We’ve been to Belfast and Dublin and the Irish audiences have been the best. My character is obsessed with Ireland and we do a Riverdance…
And my song is called ‘Ireland’. It’s big on Ireland, this show.” Based on the Reese Witherspoon film, Legally Blonde: The Musical earned seven Tony nominations and 10 Drama Desk Award nominations during its Broadway run. In the UK it was nominated for five Laurence Olivier Awards winning three, including Best New Musical. It was also nominated for eight Whatsonstage Awards, winning four including Best Musical. The show runs from July 10-14. Tickets are available from inec.ie.

The Chatroom
Kieran Put Through His Paces At Studio 7 One year on from opening Studio 7 Fitness, Michael Lindsay invited Kieran down to check out the space and give him a short workout. During their chat, Michael told Kieran a bit about his background. He was born in England to Mayo parents and he moved to Galway to work in a hotel in Eyre Square before coming down to Killarney almost eight years ago. He tells Kieran
about Studio 7 Fitness’ motto, fitness for body AND mind, and all the different kind of classes that are on offer. Michael was kind enough to give Kieran a few workout tips but, as you’ll see, he might have his work cut out for him. You can catch this latest episode of The Chatroom tonight at 9pm on our website www.killarneyadvertiser.ie or on our Facebook page.

Celtic Steps Shine In The Open Air Last week saw Celtic Steps: The Show take full advantage of the recent heatwave by producing a week of open-air performances before the beautiful backdrop of the Macgillycuddy’s Reeks at their home at the picturesque Killarney Racecourse. The shows, which took place from Tuesday until Friday, offered a unique opportunity to relax and enjoy some authentic Irish culture in one of Killarney’s most scenic settings. The open-air theatre experience included a 30-foot StageCoaster rig, a chill-out area for families and kids and an ice-cream van was on hand to create a special summertime atmosphere. The open-air shows attracted crowds of over 400 people nightly with visitors and locals alike. The audiences were treated to all the regular show favourites, from Irish classics such as Raglan Road to traditional Irish dance numbers such as the famous Irish brush dance and the Kerry polka set, all performed by the Celtic Steps Dance Troupe.
The talented group have 21 World Dance Championship titles between them. One highlight of the night was the a cappella, a form of Irish freestyle dancing performed against the stunning Kerry sunset to highlight the authenticity of the artform. David Rea of Celtic Steps commented: “We were delighted to be able to combine the magical nature of Irish music, song and dance with the natural beauty of Killarney and we couldn’t have picked a better venue than the Killarney Racecourse, on our very own doorstep.” Seán Murphy of Celtic Steps added: “It was fantastic to have visitors of all nationalities as well as locals and friends of the show join us for these special events and we would like to thank everyone for their support in making it happen.” The show will continue its successful seventh season in their indoor theatre in the Killarney Racecourse until October 18 and tickets are available online at www.CelticSteps.ie.

Anne Lucey gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry and beyond
Killarney Has Reached Saturation Point Perhaps it’s the heat but I have been munching over the word “sustainable” over the past few days. It is of course a buzzword, or fashionable word, which tends to jump across categories to define our times. Interestingly, it came into vogue with forest management – you shouldn’t cut down more of the forest than could regenerate itself, the sensible Germans said in the 18th century. Looking across from the Colleen Bawn Rock and the sea of green on Torc last week, I was minded that most of the green you see is invasive rhododendron, meaning the native forests have no chance at all of regenerating. Killarney National Park is not using sustainable native forest management. On foot of stories of the kind of long term house rental rises being sought in Killarney, the word sustainable is applicable now to this tourist town, it strikes me. Outside of the 21 designated areas (these have to be electoral areas) mainly in Dublin, Galway and Cork, where increases are limited to 4 per cent, the market is allowed dictate. Outside the designated zones, landlords can push up the rent by multiples of this figure provided they give 90 days notice and show that similar rents are being paid in nearby properties. There can’t be more than one increase in a 24-month period. One family I know of are being asked for €500 a month more on top of the €900 they were paying; another group is being asked to pay €300 more than they had been. This kind of increase may be legal, but can it be just? It is certainly not sustainable. Can we really expect families to pay prices of €1,250 and €1,400 a month? Let’s face it, unless you are in the public service, on a fairly high grade, or own a hotel or restaurant, you are not going to be paid a whole pile above the minimum wage in Killarney. And most of our hotel and service industry workers whom we depend on to run the tourist industry have no leg up the ladder in the sense they have no family land or connections. Leading auctioneers tell me there are so few houses
now for rent in Killarney, they don’t bother with rental business in the town anymore. Cllr Donal Grady, who is in touch with housing, said he would endorse a call for Killarney and other tourist towns to be added designated rent pressure zones if it could be seen through, to prevent the crazy increases all allied to the lack of supply. He has called for half of the former Pretty Polly factory site, owned now by Kerry County Council, to be used for housing, rather than being mothballed for industrial use. Dingle already has simply run out of accommodation for staff. Most staff houses, as is the case with Killarney, are now used for tourist letting. And there is not enough house building so rental prices are mad in Dingle. I wonder why our national politicians, our TDs, have not addressed the special cases of tourist towns and sought to protect the workers and families from huge increases? And like Venice and Barcelona, are we at a stage in Kerry where we cannot cope with any more tourists and we must seek ways of limiting the numbers during the high season? Certainly Dublin is over-run and downright uncomfortable. But Killarney has reached saturation point too, methinks. Not alone is there nowhere to live, there is simply no place to park. And traffic is horrendous. Now, even mountains cannot sustain the numbers on them. Patricia Deane, rural recreation officer with the South Kerry Development Partnership, has said something will have to be done about the toilet facilities for the hundreds coming onto the mountains in Kerry each day. To use buzzwords, Patricia is an incredibly dynamic person when it comes to bringing together the stakeholders of farmers and community and the climbing industry on the Reeks. Most mountains are privately owned. Patricia tells me the heat has brought out up to 500 a day on Carrauntoohil and the Reeks – and the situation is disgusting on Carrauntoohil, Ms Deane tells me.
Leo & The Media
Street Furniture It is difficult to walk on the footpaths on the streets in Dublin with the numbers of people. But it is becoming a challenge in Killarney too with increasing street furniture and drinking and smoking out on the street. This was raised at a Joint Policing Committee meeting earlier this year. But with the fine weather, the activity has grown and there is so much street furniture now on pavements
Even in winter there is a problem because the leavings of the hundreds climbing on private land end up in the water courses. Sustainable? It is not. Then people are going in the sand dunes in Rossbeigh, Inch, the Maharees… We have no public toilets on the Blasket or the Skellig which between them receive anything up to 30,000 people a year (after challenging sea crossings!). There is a 12km stretch of beach on one part of the Maharees and there is no toilet. We don’t have enough parking in Ross Castle or in Torc. Camper vans are parking overnight at most viewing points and one finds rubbish in bins in the mornings. Where are the other leavings? Michael O’Shea, the councillor in west Kerry, says we have more tourists than we can support and we need facilities, like parking and enough toilets. And he said we are “starved of facilities” and should cut down on drawing more and more until we deal with the needs of those already arriving. I think he is right. Because the downside of the heat has been that open areas like beaches have become open air toilets and have shone the light on our paltry lack of facilities . Meanwhile, of course, you can be certain that the idea of a cable car on Mangerton mountain - which got permission in the 1960s - or on any other mountain would generate such a head of steam and lip service to the environment it would not be entertained. There is a call now by Cllr Michael Cahill for the cable car plan for a mountain outside an SAC to be implemented so people with mobility problems can access a mountain. I would be all for a cable car to allow people who are not very mobile to get to the top of mountains in quick time. Mangerton is coming down with the traffic of hundreds each weekend and a deep gully has formed where 30 years ago there was none. A cable car might also mean there would be fewer surprises left behind the bushes!
outside pubs in the hot weather, I wonder how people with wheelchairs and with prams manage? Or can any order be put on the thing? One wonders if the absence of the town hall and local council has led to a kind of free for all. There is to be no meeting of the Municipal until September, when the tourist season will be almost over and the sad slide to honky tonk will have been almost complete!
Flying on one Wing If anyone is in any doubt that we really have only one city, try checking out city flights. We may have airports in Kerry, Cork and Shannon, but the only real show in town is Dublin. How do I know this? A direct bus leaves on the hour every hour from the centre of Cork City to Dublin airport. It doesn’t just leave Cork, it leaves a fine airport, with a brand new terminal to deliver at least a thousand people a day direct to Dublin. Both airports are managed by the Dublin Airport Authority, funnily enough.
Someone who is kicking up a fuss, not in the media but about the media, is our Leo. Like President Trump, he doesn’t trust what he can’t control. So, like Trump, he doesn’t like the media. He would like to control them. It’s all gossip! Pretend news! But this would be not just Leo, but the history of Fine Gael, methinks. And also of Fianna Fáil. They had their
Dublin is now so busy all flights have to queue on the runway and there are delays all summer long. Cabin crew are stressed. The public is stressed. But there is no sharing of the Dublin cake with Cork with its fine new terminal building. And if Cork is down the pecking order, try getting to Killarney or Kerry by bus or by plane. Arriving into Dublin airport, there is no connecting between the terminals for flights to Kerry. Passengers have to haul themselves through terminal one, exit passport and customs, go outside because the internal passageway is always closed to Kerry, go through passport all over again. And if you decided to take a bus to Killarney, there are no signs for where you get the bus to the
own papers once. And you could always tell a house by the papers they bought. The Irish Times was bought by the protestants, and the city folk in Dublin, the Irish Press by the Fianna Fáil people, the Irish Independent by Fine Gael houses, and the Examiner was thee paper of the people’s Republic of Cork! Wonder if Leo has plans for a non-gossip paper…
Red Cow. Then a major bus terminal like the Red Cow has a tiny bus shelter and if you are lucky enough to get onto the bus and haven’t booked you will find it doesn’t take credit or debit cards. That really is providing you get on the right bus because the signage is poor and there is no announcement system. But, of course, there is no one shouting because our TDs and senators, and the higher civil servants who deign occasionally visit the Kingdom, are never in that position of having to get the bus, or haul themselves through two terminals to get to Kerry. They have no idea what it is like for most commuters from Kerry to Dublin. And if they do, they are certainly not rocking the boat and kicking up any fuss in the media!

The Red, White & Blue Pics: Valerie O’Sullivan & Dylan Clifford
The town of Killarney was awash with red, white and blue on Wednesday as locals, officials and tourists gathered to celebrate America’s Independence Day, the 4th of July. New Mayor of Killarney John Sheahan and Chamber President Paul O’Neill launched the event at the Town Hall and an action-packed day and night of fun and festivities followed. The Big Parade was a huge success and the wonderful choir, exciting street party and amazing swing dancing really helped to set the scene. Our own Kieran Healy joined in with his Carpool Killarney-oke, cruising
around in a cool convertible while magician Chris Reina wowed the crowds with his incredible tricks. Later in the evening, a large crowd gathered at Killarney House to watch Dirty Dancing on an outdoor screen. It truly was a magical setting and the fine weather certainly helped. It goes without saying that no 4th of July celebrations would be complete without some fireworks and after dark the Killarney night sky was lit up by a spectacular show. It was the perfect way to end another perfect Independence Day in Killarney. Well done to all involved for their fantastic work.

Is There A Problem With Your Child’s Hearing? A child displaying signs of a hearing difficulty, or loss, is particularly worrying for parents. If you can’t communicate properly with them, how are you to know what they’re feeling or thinking? If you’re concerned that your child may have hearing difficulty or loss, you need to investigate and the best option is to book a hearing assessment for your child with a paediatric diagnostic audiologist. International studies prove that early detection of hearing loss will result in improved academic and social outcomes for children and their families. How do I know if my child needs a hearing test? If your child presents one or more of the following symptoms, he/she may have difficulty hearing: • You have to raise your voice to catch the child’s attention • Frequent ear infections • Failure to startle at loud noises • Delayed speech and language development • He/she does not always respond when called • Displaying inattentive or withdrawn behaviour at school • Repeatedly asks for things to be repeated • Consistently turns one ear towards the source of noise • Appears to have selective hearing, for example not
responding when their name is called • Child may appear to be clumsy as ear condition can cause balance problems • Turning the volume up louder than usual on devices It’s important to ensure that you are bringing your child to a trusted testing centre with top-of-the-range facilities. Not only will this make the experience easy on your little one, but you can also rest assured that you’re getting the most efficient consultation. When choosing a paediatric audiologist, consider the following: • Do they offer the latest in treating technology and equipment? • Are they qualified in paediatric audiology? • Can they offer a child-friendly environment for testing? Many companies offer paediatric hearing tests and care but Audiology Medical Services are the only audiology company in Ireland to offer state-of-the-art multi-sensory booths for children. Purpose-built for
paediatric hearing testing (unlike other centres, who use adult versions), these booths provide the most accurate assessment possible.

Waterford Man Jailed For Funding Isis A man who admitted sending funds to Islamic State was in contact with “medium to high level” operatives in the international terrorist group, and tried to travel to Syria to fight in the ongoing war, has been jailed for two and a half years. In the first prosecution of its kind in this country, 26-year-old Hassan Bal from Waterford admitted to unlawfully transferring €400 for use by Isis and attempting to collect money for the group. His activities were detected following a newspaper sting and an investigation by a number of police
forces. At Waterford Circuit Court today, Judge Eugene O’Kelly found that the accused had the confidence of “significant members” of Isis and had proven his credentials to them by attempting to travel to Syria to join them. He sentenced Hassan Bal, formerly of O’Connell Street in Waterford, to four and a half years in prison, with two years suspended, for attempting to collect funds for Isis. The suspensions were on the condition that he remains “totally disassociated” with any group promoting “a radical view of Islam”.
Trump Corner London’s ‘Trump Baby’ Balloon Gets Green Light A giant ‘Trump Baby’ balloon is set to be flown close to the UK Parliament during US President Donald Trump’s visit to London next week after the Mayor of London gave the go-ahead, it was announced yesterday. Protests are expected across London when Trump arrives for his three-day visit to the UK next Friday, with the 6-metre-high orange balloon poised to take centre stage. The request for the balloon to fly was approved by Mayor Sadiq Khan after over 10,000 people signed a petition and a thousand people contributed £16,000 to a crowdfunding campaign. The balloon will fly for two hours on the morning of Friday, July 13, at the same time as the “Stop Trump” march in central London. A spokesperson for the Mayor said: “The Mayor supports the right to peaceful protest and understands that this can take many different forms.
Never fails to entertain
His city operations team have met with the organisers and have given them permission to use Parliament Square Garden as a grounding point for the blimp.” His representative added, “However, the organisers will also need to receive the necessary approvals from the Metropolitan Police and National Air Traffic Service in order for it to fly. Sadiq’s main priority is the safety of all Londoners and visitors to our city, and as always we are working in very close coordination with the Metropolitan Police and other key agencies to ensure all protests are carried out safely and securely,” the spokesperson said. The giant balloon will be tethered to the ground in Parliament Square Gardens and won’t be able to float higher than 30 meters (or 98 feet). The presence of the balloon may exacerbate tensions between Khan and Trump, who have been embroiled in several Twitter spats. Khan has been outspoken in his opposition to Trump’s visit. He criticised the US President over his tweets following the terror attacks in London last year.
Coroner Issues Warning Over Steroid Use A coroner has issued a stark warning about the potentially lethal dangers of taking anabolic steroids after hearing details about the tragic death of a fit and healthy sports-mad teenager. Cork City Coroner Philip Comyn returned a verdict of misadventure today after an inquest was told how the muscle-building steroid, stanozolol, contributed to the death of Luke O’Brien from Kilmallock, County Limerick, last year. Cork City Coroner’s Court was told that Luke fell ill and was vomiting during the early stages of his leaving cert in June 2017 and visited his GP, who prescribed medication and administered an injection in a bid to get him through the exams. But he became very unwell and disorientated at home on June 13 and was taken by ambulance to University Hospital Limerick. The next day, his
father, Denis, gave the medical team an empty pack of stanozolol, with the name of an Indian factory on the box. Luke was transferred to Cork University Hospital (CUH) on June 16 where his condition deteriorated and he was pronounced dead on June 18. Consultant physician, Dr Robert Plant, said the teenager’s brain swelled to such an extent that it triggered a rapid and sudden decline which caused brain death.
Quebec Heatwave Leaves 33 Dead
Thirty-three people have died in a heatwave that has baked the southern part of the Canadian province of Quebec, officials say. The sweltering weather began last Friday with temperatures hitting 35C and high humidity. The death toll has climbed every day this week, with 17 total deaths reported by Wednesday and 33 recorded by Thursday. The heatwave is the worst the province has seen in decades. Officials are urging people to drink plenty of water and stay in the shade. The city has opened pools and air conditioned spaces to the public. Mayor Plante said first responders have been going door-to-door, checking on some 15,000 vulnerable
residents. So far, 12 of the 33 deaths have been in Montreal, the most populous city in the province. “I’m counting on Montrealers to knock on doors, maybe of a neighbour, just to find out if the person is okay. It’s a team effort,” said Mayor Plante. Heat waves can be especially deadly for the very young, very old and infirm, said public health officials. Montreal public health official Mylene Drouin told the CBC that the Montrealers who died had no air conditioning and prior health issues. Average temperatures in Montreal way above the usual 25C at this time of year. The heat is supposed to break Friday, according to Environment Canada, with highs dropping to 24C.

World Cup:
Neymar Has Spent 14 Minutes On The Ground
Brazil superstar Neymar might be the most-fouled player in the World Cup but figures revealed on Thursday show just how much he is milking every point of contact. As players, pundits and fans alike fume at the antics of the 26-year-old, rolling around and writhing in agony, it has emerged that Neymar has spent a staggering 13 minutes 50 seconds on the ground. Fouled 23 times in four matches so far, that means Neymar spends almost 30 seconds ‘recovering’ from every knock. The claim has been made by RTS (Switzerland) after Neymar was the centre of attention for both the right and, unfor-
tunately, wrong reasons during his country’s 2-0 defeat of Mexico in the last 16 clash. He scored a goal and claimed an assist but spoiled his Man of the Match performance when Mexico’s full-back, Miguel Layun, gently stepped on the Brazilian’s ankle. Brazil’s No. 10 acted like it had been a stamp, indicating huge pain. He also completed a large number of rolls after a challenge during Brazil’s opening match against Switzerland. Neymar’s ‘rest periods’: • Against Switzerland 3min 40sec • Against Costa Rica 2min 46sec • Against Serbia 1min 56sec • Against Mexico 5min 29sec
Garda Dressed Up As Postman To Catch Suspected Dealer
A garda dressed up as a postman and borrowed an An Post van to deliver 36,000 ecstasy pills to a suspected dealer, a court has heard. Philip Noonan (49) signed for the parcel and was promptly arrested by gardaí who had been alerted by customs to a suspicious package, later found to contain over €280,000 worth of drugs. Noonan, of Viking Road, Stoneybatter, Dublin 7, was sentenced to two and-ahalf years in prison for possessing drugs for sale or supply at his home on June 30, 2015. He initially told gardaí he hadn’t been expecting a delivery and knew nothing about the package, but pleaded guilty on the day of his scheduled trial at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court. The court heard the pills had a market value of €288,000. Passing sentence today, Judge Martin Nolan accepted that the accused man was not the owner of the drugs but had decided to receive the package for onward delivery. “He knew what he was getting into,” said the judge. “This was serious
drug-dealing even though he didn’t profit to a great degree.” Garda Joanna Myles told Dean Kelly BL, prosecuting, that customs officers had been alerted to a suspicious package that had arrived from Germany to the Portlaoise Mail Centre in early June 2015. The parcel, addressed to Noonan, showed an anomaly on the X-ray machine and was found to contain 18 vacuum-packed bags of round blue tablets with logos printed on them. It was then arranged with postal services that a garda wearing an An Post jacket and driving an An Post van would deliver the package to the accused man. Noonan opened the door and signed for the package, and when gardaí entered the house a few minutes later he was in the lavatory. He has 20 previous convictions, mostly for minor public order offences and criminal damage, apart from one robbery for which he received a two-and-a-half year sentence in 1992. The 36,000 pills were analysed and found to comprise MDMA with a market value of €288,000.
Thai Cave Rescuers In Race Against The Rains Rescuers are racing against the rains to free 12 boys and their football coach, who are trapped in a flooded cave in northern Thailand. A deluge is expected to hit in a matter of days that could force the water level up, threatening to flood the pocket where the group took refuge. The teenage boys and their 25-year-old coach have been trapped for 12 days. They were found on Monday night by rescue divers, on a rock shelf about 4km from the cave mouth. The boys have now received food, foil blankets, and medical attention, and rescuers are trying to run cables through the cave tunnel so they can speak to their families. The region of Chiang Rai where the boys are trapped has for the past few days experienced a dry spell, and rescuers have taken advantage of this to pump water out of the cave complex. About 128 million litres
of water had been pumped out by Thursday, with the water levels coming down at an average rate of 1.5cm per hour. Rescue workers are now able to walk through a 1.5km (0.9 mile) stretch from the entrance to what’s being called the third chamber. But heavy monsoon rains are forecast for Sunday. Chiang Rai Governor Narongsak Osotthanakorn said they were “racing against water”. “We are calculating how much time we have it if rains, how many hours and days,” he said. The Tham Luang cave complex is regularly flooded during the rainy season until September or October, raising fears that a delay could leave the boys trapped in the cave for months.

Netflix - Queer Eye Season 2
Review: Florence and the Machine – High As Hope Florence Welch returns with her fourth studio album and even though she is known for her big, blustering operatic pop songs, High As Hope finds her in comparatively contemplative mode. In comparison to previous albums Lungs, Ceremonials and 2015’s disappointing How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful, her
fourth outing features minimalist, stripped-down productions, and explores themes of heartache, family, and finding comfort in loneliness. Music critics have lauded Welch’s vocal performance and personal lyricism on this new album and after one listen you can see why.

Decide on your party theme. Will you be hosting a family-friendly barbecue or a sophisticated cocktail night? Decide on a location, date and time. Create handy lists that you can continually update throughout the planning process. These will include a master to-do list, and a cost sheet that outlines your budget and a shopping list.
A Fortnight Before Invitations
Create a guest list and decide whether online invitations or mailed invitations are appropriate for the event. Be sure to include the who, what, when and where; a suggested attire is usually much appreciated by guests.
Plan your menu Plan a menu based on seasonal ingredients. Berries, fresh herbs and farmers’ market veggies are at their peak during summer months, so think of ways to incorporate these types of produce into each area of the menu, from appetizers to desserts. Choose dishes that can be prepared in advance, leaving only one or two that need last-minute attention. Survey your serving pieces to ensure you have the
proper vessel for each dish you’re preparing. Inviting guests to contribute their favourite summer dishes lightens the load and brings a fun, collaborative feel to the event.
For the drinks Keep it casual. Embrace the idea of a self-serve bar or iced-down beers in a galvanized bucket. Sangrias and margaritas are a summertime favourite and can be prepared ahead of time, allowing guests to serve themselves. Set drinks out in a punch bowl or glass drink dispenser for easy access and a pretty presentation.
For the decor Pick a palette. Summer is the perfect time to embrace brighter colours in sunny combinations. Incorporate them into your party through decorative details like paper flags and linens.
A Week Before Start prepping
Cross off any ingredients or party supplies still remaining on your shopping list. Use this week to knock out any prep that can be done ahead of time, like assembling favour bags, handwriting place cards and arranging a buffet setup. If you’re setting up a buffet, use a sticky note to label each serving piece in advance with what item will be served on it. This ensures that each dish has a place and the buffet is perfectly arranged.
The Day Before Set the scene
Give the event space a thorough cleaning. Put up decorations and set the scene. Prepare any dishes that can be refrigerated and won’t perish overnight. Even if your party is outside, remember that guests will be coming inside to use the bathroom. Beautify this space by removing all personal belongings from the counter and placing a gorgeous bottle of soap and high-quality paper napkins near the sink.
The Day Of The Party Final touches
Bring it all together by setting the table, finishing final food preparations, putting beverages on ice and lighting candles. Give yourself plenty of time to get party-ready before guests arrive. Don a gorgeous outfit, add festive accessories, and toast to the success of your fabulous summer party!
Recruit help Have a friend or relative come over early to assist with setup, replenishing dishes and pitching in during clean-up.

06.07.18 CACI lifts, smoothens and plumps whilst erasing lines, dark circles and puffiness under the eyes, says Jill O’Donoghue of Killarney Toning & Beauty
Brighten Those Dark Circles With CACI This is such an effective treatment for those who look in the mirror and think they are suffering with dark circles, lines and drooping eyes. We all have different lifestyles that can hinder our health; a hectic lifestyle can mean your diet suffers, or young children, work, stress and other issues can cause lack of sleep. These issues (plus many others) can impact how we look and due to the delicate skin around the eyes, this can be a particular problem area. The CACI Ultimate Eye treatment concentrates only on the eye area. It lifts, smoothens and plumps whilst erasing lines, dark circles and puffiness under the eyes. This treatment includes crystal free orbital microdermabrasion. This is a non-evasive skin resurfacing treatment. It works by gently removing the dead layer of skin with the use of an orbital rotation hand piece, which significantly reduces skin imperfections such as pigmentation, age spots, wrinkles and impurities. Your skin will be left feeling smooth and clear. Light therapy is also emitted from the device to enhance circulation, wound healing, speed up cell renewal, stimu-
late collagen and also act as a calming agent. It is a perfect facial treatment for dull, tired, de-hydrated skin and a great alterative to collagen injections. The wrinkle comb is also included in this treatment. This is non-evasive and has been designed to effectively reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles. Once the skin has been prepared, the Amino-Lift Peptide Complex is applied to the specific areas of concern. CACI’S wrinkle comb handset is then used to precisely exfoliate lines and wrinkles around the eye area. This also combines LED light therapy and microcurrents giving the area a brighter complexion. CACI Ultimate Eye Treatment Benefits: • Smoothens and plumps lines and wrinkles • Reduces dark circles • Reduces puffiness • Resurfaces the skin to give a more youthful appearance • LED light therapy stimulates circulation for a brighter, healthy complexion

Time for perennials, annuals Garden Magic and shrubs to shine Words: Debby Looney
We are spoilt for choice and colour at this time of year – perennials, annuals and shrubs all come into their own. If we were to single out two, Alstroemeria and Campanula are real value for money. Alstroemeria are also known as Peruvian lilies and until recently we really only saw them in floral bouquets. However, they are now available in abundance and are well worth investing in. Flowering freely throughout the summer, they come in whites, yellows, oranges, reds and pinks. There are tall varieties and dwarf ones, those with red foliage and those with variegated foliage. All do well in our weather but do not like to be waterlogged in the winter. The dwarf varieties are fantastic for pots, staying at a height of about 15cm. Campanulas are a well-known garden staple and are available in every size and
shape you may need. Tall varieties include C. latifolia, a broad-leaved variety. It reaches up to five feet and has very large blue or purple bells. C. alliariifolia is also a tall variety with elegant spires of pure white bells. It is a beauty! C. trachelium is also tall with simple mauve flowers. ‘Bernice’ is a bit shorter (60cm) but with masses of double mauve flowers. (Its name, trachelium’, derives from ‘trachelos’, meaning ‘throat’. It was once used as a remedy for sore throats). C. ‘Kent Belle’ is a very popular campanulawhich is grown in many gardens. It has large bells in a rich shade of purply-blue. C. persicifolia grows to 80cm and is possibly the truest blue of all campanulas. It has delicate bright green foliage. ‘Boule de neige’, is, as the name suggest, pure white, and very pretty! A mid-sized campanula is C. punctate, and
two to look out for (or, rather, seek out!) are ‘Cherry Bells’ and ‘Pantaloons’. The former has rich burgundy bells, the latter double bells in mauve with purple spots gracing the bottom frill. C. glomerata is a popular choice also, bearing tight, globe-shaped clusters of flowers. Campanulas really come into their own as groundcover, rockery plants and wall plants. C. portenschlagiana is an old variety, one which is ideal for rockeries, and which self seeds and finds a stronghold in any crevice. It has rich, deep blue, cup-shaped flowers and a mat-forming growth habit. C. garganica is another low grower with azure blue star-shaped flowers. It is evergreen in Kerry. In general, campanulas are easy to grow. They are native to alkaline regions within Europe, and I have noticed that adding a little horticultural lime produces better

plants. (I recommend horticultural lime as opposed to builders lime for only one reason – it is granulated and this has a slow release action. Builders lime, being dust, leaches out of the soil fairly quickly). Well-drained soil is essential, and sunlight is certainly preferable! Repeat flowering can be encouraged by cutting back the plant after flowering. If you are hoping to establish plants in a wall, it is best to plant them in the crevices in autumn, giving them a chance to establish before summer. Most campanulas are sold when in flower so be patient. Buy the plants, repot into bigger pots, then in October divide them and put them into the wall for a spectacular show next spring! Debby is available for garden consultations or advice. Simply call 086 6088156 or email barnhillgarden@gmail.com.

Verstappen Wins In Austria As Vettel Takes Title Lead Max Verstappen won Red Bull’s home Austrian Grand Prix last weekend while Lewis Hamilton suffered his first race retirement since 2016 and lost the Formula One championship lead to Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel. On a bleak day for Mercedes, who suffered a double mechanical retirement for the first time since their return as a constructor in 2010, Verstappen and his 20,000-strong army of orange-shirted Dutch fans led the celebrations. The victory was the 20-year-old driver’s first of the season, and fourth of his career. Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen finished a close second, with teammate Vettel third against expectations after a grid penalty had demoted him to sixth. The German, whose team did not invoke orders for Raikkonen to cede position as might have been expected, clawed back the overall lead by a single point from Mercedes rival Hamilton. Australian Daniel Ricciardo, Verstappen’s teammate who was celebrating his 29th birthday, was in a podium position but heavy rear tyre wear took its toll and he retired with a broken exhaust. Hamilton’s retirement with eight laps to go, and while in fourth place, ended a record run of 33 successive scoring finishes. Vettel now has 146 points to Hamilton’s 145 after nine rounds and with the Briton’s home race at Silverstone this weekend. Ferrari meanwhile took over at the top of the constructors’ standings, 10 points clear of Mercedes.

Volkswagen Beetle To Be Reincarnated As Pure-Electric Car
Volkswagen executives are secretly plotting to reinvent the VW Beetle as a re-bodied version of the forthcoming 2019 ID hatch. Set to feature the familiar Beetle silhouette, the reborn people’s car would be based on the same Volkswagen Group MEB electric vehicle platform as the new range of VW ID models and come with a rear-mounted electric motor. Recently Volkswagen confirmed that the current Beetle, which shares much with the Golf hatch, will not be replaced when production comes to an end next year. Championing the cause for a
Beetle replacement, Volkswagen Group CEO Herbert Diess has publicly announced that he is keen to introduce more “emotional” cars to Volkswagen’s line-up, alongside the regular offerings. Part of the charm of a pure-electric Beetle based on the Volkswagen Group’s MEB platform is that instead of a rebodied frontwheel drive Golf, the pure-electric Bug would be rear-engined and rear-wheel drive, mimicking the original’s layout. Once launched around 2021, the Beetle EV would go head-to-head with pure-electric versions of both the MINI and the Fiat 500.

Audi To Begin Flying Car Tests In German City Audi and its aviation partner Airbus has announced it has signed a letter of intent with the German city of Ingolstadt to begin testing its prototype air taxis in and around the Bavarian city. In a statement, Audi said the tests would help develop a mode of transport that would overcome the city’s congested roads.“Flying taxis aren’t a vision any longer, they can take us off into a new dimension of mobility,” agreed Germany’s transport minister Andreas Scheuer following the announcement of the Ingolstadt tests. It was at this year’s Geneva motor show that Audi announced it had teamed up with both Italdesign and Airbus to develop flying cars. At the Swiss show, Audi showed off its Pop. Up Next concept that combined a self-driving car that would dock
with a passenger drone to beat congestion. The pure-electric concept was back then described as a “vision that could permanently change our urban life in the future”. Created to work as an on-demand robo-taxi, the vertical take-off and landing vehicle (VTOL) will have plenty of competition when it eventually hits the market. MercedesBenz has already invested in a German passenger drone company, while Toyota has confirmed it will have an ‘airborne personal mobility device’ ready for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Finally, even Chinese car-making giant Geely is getting in on the flying car act, purchasing US-based Terrafugio back in 2017. It is confident it will beat all its rivals to market with its first flying car set to go on sale in 2019.

Old Market Lane

The old ‘Market House’ was one of the first administrative structures in Killarney town. In 1747 the Killarney area only consisted of a handful of slated houses and 100 odd thatched A R C H I V E cottages. The town was to grow up around a newly constructed street, developed by the Earl of Kenmare. Thus the Market House, a small edifice at the time, is believed to have been built around this time in the early 1750’s. Monthly court sessions were initially held there and its primary roll was administration. Under the stewardship of the Earl, prominent families were invited to Killarney to help develop the town, industry came, commerce thrived and the population grew. The streets sprung up, the gardens of the newly built slated houses were developed. The lanes came into being. Tenements housed many of the areas poor. In such proximity to the centre of the town and main market area, the old market lane became into being and developed a hive of cottage industries and eating houses. Many different trades sprung up in the lanes to support the local industries, primarily the Linen and Tanning Industry and in later years with the coming of the railway, which brought the Brewery’s and Tourism. In 1834 the Market House (at the Market Cross) was described as ancient and dilapidated. Now derelict, it housed those suffering from fever during the famine. It was eventually razed to ground in 1845/46 to make way for the building you see today which was also built by an Earl of Kenmare to act as an administration centre for Killarney town and as a Temperance Hall. The centre for commerce was moved to Fair Hill and acted as a butter market/weigh station on fair days. In later years the red brick building also served Killarney’s first cinema, a post office, a Town Hall and even grand Balls were held in the upper part of the house for visiting gentry. The red brick building was originally once whitewashed, it had three archways under which facilitated the sale of baled linen, fish, meat and vegetables amongst other ornamental articles. The lane under the arch has one claim over all else, as to mark its importance, it was the only street/lane in Killarney which was flagged (paved), a small stretch from the Market House to the adjoining lane, they were called ‘O’Learys Flags’. One arch remains today which leads onto Old Market Lane. The fairs eventually died out and bar the odd turkey and pig fairs (which were held on College street) the Market house is the sole survivor of our market town history.

World Cup Clash Arrogance Of
Shows The GAA Words: Adam Moynihan
There was general bewilderment around the county this week when news broke that Kerry’s opening Super 8 fixture against Galway had been set for Sunday, July 15 at 4pm; the exact same time as the World Cup final. The Kerry game will be the second part of a double-header in Croke Park, with Dublin v Donegal plus another match taking place at HQ on the Saturday evening. This is just pure arrogance on the GAA’s part. Going head-to-head with the biggest sporting even in the world? I wouldn’t mind if it was the All-Ireland final but Kerry v Galway isn’t even the biggest Gaelic football
game taking place that weekend. It’s madness. The GAA are effectively making Kerry and Galway fans choose between soccer and football. I thought those days were long gone. I’ve heard “hardcore” fans saying, “How could you choose a soccer game between two teams you don’t care about over Kerry in the championship?” The point is this: why should we have to choose? And this isn’t just any old soccer game. The World Cup final comes around once every four years. Kerry effectively have three quarter final games this year, and one of them will be in Killarney. Barring a major upset, there will be another opportunity to
see Kerry in Croke Park next month. And, hopefully, another the month after. We have two big games in Dublin every year (sometimes three, if we’re lucky). Kerry fans are already notorious for “waiting for the final”. I don’t think there would have been a huge crowd at the Galway game anyway, but this clash is sure to deter a good number of supporters. Isn’t it funny how they didn’t put Dublin on at 4pm on Sunday? Maybe they feared that more city folk than culchies would opt for the foreign sport, especially when Dublin fans have two home games to choose from in the Super 8s. But look, it’s just the latest move in the GAA’s
ongoing ‘Look After the Dubs at All Costs’ initiative. They’ll probably get an eight-day turnaround to their second game as well, and Kerry will be out the following Saturday. It would have made more sense to have a triple-header on the Saturday and put Dublin and Donegal on early on the Sunday, say at 1.30pm, but I’m sure the GAA crunched the numbers on that and came up with an unsatisfactory figure. As it happens, a few of us are heading up to the capital that weekend so we’ll probably end up going to the Kerry game anyway. I have a feeling we’ll have a lonesome enough walk up to Jones’ Road.
The Football Qualifiers:
Three Things To Watch Out For
The fourth and final round of the All-Ireland Senior Football Qualifiers takes place this weekend and the results will have major ramifications for Kerry and Dublin, writes Adam Moynihan
1. Who’s coming to Killarney?
Kerry’s first ever home Super 8s game is just around the corner and their opponents will be decided tomorrow when Fermanagh play Kildare in Navan. The winner of this tie will advance to the next phase and face Kerry in their third and final quarter final group stage game on August 4/5/6. If we were being very picky we might have asked for more high profile opposition but neither Fermanagh, who reached the Ulster final, nor Kildare, who defeated Mayo (and the GAA) in the last round, will be a pushover, even with home advantage. Kildare will be favourites following their
successful ‘Newbridge or nowhere’ campaign and former Kerry selector Cian O’Neill could well be bringing his charges to Killarney on the August bank holiday weekend.
2. Away days
Before Kerry play host to anyone in the Super 8s, they must do a bit of travelling themselves and they’ll be going at least halfway up the country for their second group game, if not farther. Over the weekend of July 21/22, Eamonn Fitzmaurice and his talented squad will take on the winners of Sun-
day’s clash between Laois and Monaghan. This is probably the biggest mismatch of Round 4; Monaghan should prevail with some points to spare. That would leave Kerry facing a tricky road fixture above in Clones. It’s an exciting (if not entirely appetising) prospect and it would be interesting to see how many hardened Kerry ultras fancy an away day up in Ulster.
3. Ulster + the Dubs?
If the Munster final is anything to go by,
Cork won’t turn over Tyrone so T h e O’Neill County will, in all likelihood, be joining Dublin and Donegal in Group 2. The remaining spot in this pool will be filled by either Roscommon or Armagh and if the latter pull off a minor upset and win tomorrow, the reigning All-Ireland champions will have three games against Ulster opposition in the Super 8s. Realistically, Dublin would probably win their two home games (against Donegal and Armagh/Roscommon) regardless but an away tie against Tyrone on July 21/22 would potentially be the tie of the round.

Words: Eamonn Fitzgerald Former winner Shane Lowry will be hoping for good luck at Donegal’s Ballyliffin Golf Club for this weekend’s Dubai Duty Free Irish Open hosted by the Rory Foundation, the fourth Rolex Series event of the 2018 Race to Dubai. For the first time in his career, Lowry has been based in the Unites States of America this year and the 31-year-old has enjoyed consistent form without yet threatening to add to his trophy cabinet. He notched up a top 15 finish in his opening Rolex Series appearance of the campaign at the BMW PGA Championship but, as a links expert who has already won on home soil, he will no doubt be chomping at the bit to take on the stunning Glashedy Course at Ballyliffin. Playing conditions on the northwest coast of Ireland will be very fast with all this fine weather. The vociferous home crowds will be cheering the popular Offaly player all the way. Lowry provided one of the most memorable moments in the 91-year history of the event in 2009 with a dramatic victory as an amateur. “I think Ballyliffin will be a brilliant venue for the Irish Open,” said the three-time European Tour winner. “I have a lot of fond memories of playing Interprovincial Championships there so it will be great to go back. It’s one of those weeks on tour that you have to adapt to. For most of the Irish lads, you need to treat it like a massive event because you have so much on, so you actually need to prepare differently to most other weeks. “Stuff like doing a lot more media, seeing a lot more friends and family, trying to give as much time to the fans are fantastic problems to have, but you to need to remember to get ready for the
for obvious reasons. It launched my career when I won it as an amateur and I would love nothing more than to win it again as a pro.” Lowry, along with his fellow home heroes McIlroy, Darren Clarke, Paul Dunne, Pádraig Harrington, Graeme McDowell and Paul McGinley, will be joined at Ballyliffin Golf Club by an impressive lineup of international players. Leading those will be the defending champion and world number five Jon Rahm, who will be chasing a third Rolex Series title in the space of 10 months, while his Spanish compatriot Rafa Cabrera Bello will be hoping to add a second ahead of his Scottish Open title defence a week later.
tournament! But I don’t think any of us would have it any other way – it’s one of the special weeks on tour for everyone associated with Irish golf. “The tournament itself is massive now that it’s on the Rolex Series and it has such a committed sponsor like Dubai Duty Free. They have, along with Rory obviously, taken it to a new level over the past few years and it’s brilliant to see the tournament getting back to the way it was with huge crowds, great fields and big prize money. “It will always have a special place in my heart

Best Word Cup ever? It’s already up there, certainly in my lifetime. And we still haven’t seen how England are going to make balls of their tournament. It’s all ahead of us! After a shaky first week, I’m flying with the predictions. I said Messi would be heading home after Saturday’s game and I also backed Uruguay to beat Portugal. Spain let me down by losing on penalties to Russia but I bravely said that Croatia would comfortably beat Denmark and I was right. They comfortably beat them (on penalties). We’re down to the last eight now with the four quarter final ties taking place today and tomorrow. They’re all tough enough to call but I’m after getting six of the last eight correct. I’m buzzing.
their star player is such a spoilt brat. Neymar, whose antics are becoming more immature the older he gets, feigned injury again in their otherwise unremarkable 2-0 victory over Mexico in the last 16 and, to be honest, Belgium would be doing us all a favour by sending him home on the next flight out of Kazan. Belgium played the bad guys themselves in the previous round as they broke Japanese hearts with a last gasp, counter attack winner. Brazil will be their biggest test to date but in Hazard, De Bruyne and Lukaku they have the attacking threat to worry any team in the tournament. Prediction: Brazil 1-3 Belgium
Quarter Final England v Sweden Saturday at 3pm
Quarter Final Uruguay v France Friday at 3pm
Is it just a coincidence that two of the more impressive team performances of the tournament so far came against Argentina? France looked very exciting as they put four goals past Jorge Sampaoli’s hapless side and many observers have since talked up their chances of going all the way. It’s worth remembering, however, that exactly the same thing happened when Croatia put the Argentineans to the sword in the group stage, and you’d have to say that Luka Modric and co. looked fairly underwhelming against an average enough Denmark team last weekend. France have a verified superstar in teenager Kylian Mbappé, and tireless midfielder N’Golo Kanté, who has been linked with every top team in Europe, could play for any top team in Europe, but they have been erratic enough elsewhere. Full backs Benjamin Pavard and Lucas Hernández are inexperienced at this level and as a unit they shipped three goals against a shambolic Argentina side. You wouldn’t fancy them to keep a clean sheet against a decent team and Uruguay are certainly a decent team. With a solid defence and Suarez and Cavani on the rampage up top, the South Americans are in with a real shot of reaching a semi-final at least. Prediction: Uruguay 1-1 France (Uruguay win on pens)
Quarter Final Brazil v Belgium Today at 7pm
Normally we all have a soft spot for the Brazilians but it’s hard to root for them when
It’s coming home! (see page 4) They came in under the radar but the sea has really parted for this English team. Tunisia, Panama, Colombia and Sweden? Has there ever been a more straightforward path to a World Cup semi-final? Surely they can’t mess it up now. SURELY. Well, of course they can. This is England we’re talking about. Having said that, I don’t think they’ll fall at this particular hurdle. Prediction: Harry Kane 2-1 Sweden
Quarter Final Russia v Croatia Saturday at 7pm
They were the lowest ranked team heading into the World Cup but, incredibly, the hosts are now just 90 minutes away from securing a place in the last four. You certainly couldn’t say they were undeserving of their penalty shootout victory over Spain; they sat back and forfeited possession but kept a very tight ship in the process, frustrating the toothless former world champions for 120 long minutes of football. The Croatia game could follow a similar pattern and, if it does, they could well take it to extra time or even penalties again. Prediction: Russia 1-1 (Russia win on pens)

It’s a good song. You have to give them that much. It’s not quite as great as New Order’s World in Motion (with John Barnes’ sick rap) but Three Lions by Baddiel & Skinner and The Lightning Seeds is genuinely so, so good. Fair enough, you have to leave your republicanism at the door to really appreciate it. Delighting in the misery of the English football team is a biennial tradition in this part of the world and, for many, the prospect of England actually winning something, and football actually coming home, is simply unthinkable. But this iconic song, which was released two weeks before England hosted the European Championships in 1996, encapsulates the mentality of the English football fan so accurately. The nostalgia. The constant failure. And then, of course, the blind optimism. Everyone seems to know the score, they’ve seen it all before They just know, they’re so sure That England’s gonna throw it away, gonna blow it away. But I know they can play, ‘cause I remember… Three lions on a shirt
Jules Rimet still gleaming Thirty years of hurt Never stopped me dreaming There’s a major tournament every two years. That’s 35 in total since the first World Cup in 1930. England have won just one, the World Cup in 1966. They’ve reached the semi-final twice (1990 and Euro ‘96). In 32 of 35 competitions they haven’t even come close. The long and the short of it goes like this: England aren’t that good at soccer. Yet every summer of every even year, English fans completely lose the run of themselves and start to believe that it’s finally happening. “Football’s coming home.” Sports fans are often deluded but this is on a different scale altogether. So, is football actually coming home this year? This is definitely not their best team but this is surely their best chance since Italia ‘90. The draw could not have been any kinder to Gareth Southgate’s young lions and following victories over Tunisia, Panama and Tuesday’s rare penalty shootout triumph over Colombia, plucky Sweden stand between them and a place in the semi-final. Spain are out. Argentina are out. Germany are out. France, Belgium and Brazil are on the other side of the bracket. If not now, when?
Sport
“Never!” you shout in unison. I posted an Instagram story during the week with the headline of this article and a poll asking if my head was gone, or if football was actually coming home. 74% said my head was gone. I’m not sure how many of those who voted were swayed by patriotism, or how many just think this England team isn’t good enough (or how many simply wanted to take the opportunity to tell me that my head is gone), but one thing is for sure: very few Irish people want Harry Kane to lift the trophy on June 15. Look, I get the anti-England thing. I’m Irish. I even get the hatred of the English football team and the insufferable media hype that follows them to every tournament. But would it really be the worst thing in the world if they won it? It’d certainly make for a great story. (Alright, the British press would be even more unbearable than usual but there’s a simple solution to that: don’t read the Daily Mail or watch Sky Sports News. That’s good advice generally, by the way.) It’s hard to view England as the underdogs but you’d nearly have to feel sorry for them. 52 years is a long time to be absolutely rubbish. If they do go all the way, I’m not expecting raucous renditions of Three Lions around the streets of Killarney but it wouldn’t kill us to say, “fair play”. And throw on World in Motion. John Barnes is up there with Biggie and Pac in my book.

Beautiful Day At 233rd Killarney Regatta The 233rd Annual Killarney Regatta was held on Sunday last at Killarney Golf and Fishing Club on Mahony’s Point on Loch Leane. It was a beautiful day for rowing with lovely water conditions and a little lull in the recent high temperatures to accommodate the hundreds of people young and old who spent the day rowing and putting on a fine display for the large crowd in attendance. A lot of onshore entertainment was on hand with bouncy castles, bonny baby competition and O’Leary School of Dancing all contributing to a great day out. It is very encouraging to note that this is the 233rd Annual Regatta and it seems as though the sport of rowing in Killarney is maintaining its popularity
among the locals young and old both in terms of participation and as an excellent day out for spectators. A great days racing was had with a number of very close races ran and as usual there was nothing won easily. The overall points once again went to Muckross by a narrow margin of only four points this year with Fossa putting on a strong show of resistance all day by winning six races. Muckross also won six, Flesk Valley won one and Workmen won three. A fitting and well deserved tribute was paid to John Kelly who passed away earlier this year. John gave great service to the sport of rowing in Killarney at club level and as an officer on Killarney Regatta
Committee in various positions over many years. A minute’s silence was observed before the senior men’s race with the participating crews holding on the finish line. John is fondly remembered by the rowing fraternity in Killarney. The committee would like to thank the clubs and all who volunteer to assist in running the event on the day, Killarney Golf and Fishing Club for their cooperation and assistance over the years and of course the sponsors for their invaluable contributions. The clubs and event are all supported voluntarily by the various trainers and club personnel who volunteer in all weather all year round to ensure we enjoy the annual spectacle.

Players, mentors and officials were joined by members of the club’s senior squad for the annual Saturday Morning Open Day at Lewis Road.
Rugby News ... Words: Liam Murphy
History was made in Sydney on June 23 as Joe Schmidt’s men defeated the mighty Wallabies on a 20 points to 16 scoreline to win the test series and retain the Lansdowne Cup for the third time in a row. Though the 18-9 defeat to the Wallabies was only two weeks previous, the Irish dug deep to back up the five-point win in the second test – a first win on Australian soil since 1979! In the final test, Ireland clung on for the win when it looked like the TMO may help the home side to snatch a late win. Johnny Sexton kicked a perfect penalty that secured the four-point lead, adding to the previous four penalties kicked. CJ Stander scored the only try for the visitors, sealing an historic season for the men in Green. Let’s hope they can build from the
Stander Seals Historic Season For Irish Rugby
Grand Slam, the European success for Leinster and the test series win to really mount
a challenge to the mighty All Blacks in next year’s World Cup in Japan. With Joe Schmidt building a formidable squad, expectations will be high going into the World Cup and rightly so. However, we must not lose the run of ourselves as the World Cup is a year away and a year is a long time in rugby! In other news, England’s Eddie Jones will be clinging onto his job as England won the third test against South Africa, having lost the previous five matches in a row. Jones is no doubt building towards the World Cup and will play down the losses with his usual smugness, however he will need to work hard at turning their fortunes around. Again, a year is a long time and next season’s 6 Nations will tell a lot ahead of the World Cup.

Flesk Rowing Club
Last Sunday the 233rd Killarney Regatta took place at O Mahonys point. It was a historic day for the Valley which saw six Valley girls, enter Valley folklore, when they stormed to victory under the guidance of Rory Leane. In doing so Roisin Wall, Tara O Donoghue, Neidin O Sullivan,
Caoimhe O Sullivan, Leah Burke and Edel Sweetman became to first ever Flesk Valley crew to win the Juvenile Girls race. The Valley narrowly miss out on gold in the Minor Boys race, after a huge effort, with only inches separating the two boats. Throughout the day there were superb performances from all crews with the Valley picking up four more silver medals, in the Junior Mens 6, the Junior Mens 4, the Novice Mens 6 and the Junior ladies 4. It was a fantastic day out and thanks to all who made the day a great success from organising crews, to coxing, to keeping the kettle boiled. The last act of the day saw the Jimmy Fleming our club president make a presentation to his nephew John Fleming to mark his commitment and dedication to Flesk Valley Rowing Club, on a day that saw him row in his 31st consecutive Killarney Regatta. What an achievement!

Dr Crokes Club
COUNTY LEAGUE DIVISION 1 - ROUND 8. Dr Crokes 4-17 John Mitchels 0-11. Played in Lewis Road on Saturday 30th of June. Despite our big win over John Mitchels this was a very competitive game in the first half. Our opponents had every bit as much play as we had but two good goals by Jordan Kiely gave us a 2-6 to 0-5 lead at half time.We started much the better at the start of the second half and outscored John Mitchels by four points to one. This put us ten points clear with twenty minutes to go. Our opponents never gave up but failed over the hour to score a goal. Goals as we alwas say win matches and on the night we got trough for four majors which ensured us a convincing victory. Johnny Buckley aided by Alan O’ Sullivan was very much to the fore at midfield and Jordan Kiely found the net on two occasions in the first half. This meant that our opponents were always chasing the game even though they battled hard right to the end.

Fossa GAA
SENIORS: Fossa secured a very valuable win over St. Michaels/Foilmore in the county league to on Sunday. Fossa got a dream start when Paudie Clifford crashed the ball to the net with the first attack of the game, however St Michaels/Foilmore replied instantly with a point and incredibly in the second minute they struck for a goal to take the lead. The game continued at a frantic pace with the impressive Cian O’Shea putting over a great point after a surging run from midfield, in the sixth minute Tadgh O’Shea scored Fossa’s second goal and Lorcan Daly kicked a point to leave Fossa leading by four after seven minutes of play. St Michaels/Foilmore, who were competitive all through, never gave up and kept the scoreboard ticking, however further scores by Cian O’Shea, Tadgh O’Shea, Fintan Coffey, Paudie Clifford and Michael O’Keeffe left Fossa leading at the break, 2-07 to 1-06. Lorcan Daly kicked two very good scores at the start of the second half but St. Michaels/ Foilmore scored an excellent goal in the fourth minute to bring them right back in contention again. This seemed to focus the Fossa players and they responded well after that, Kevin O’Sullivan had a tremendous game in defence, breaking up numerous attacks and breaking forward, Fintan Coffey and Cian O’Shea won a lot of ball at midfield and Paudie Clifford was his usual inventive self at centre forward, Darragh Rice and Brian Walsh also added a different dimension when they came on. Scores from Michael O’Keeffe, Donald O’Sullivan, Tadgh O’Shea and Paudie Clifford gave Fossa a commanding lead with time running out, St. Michaels/Foilmore did score a third goal in injury time but Fossa were worthy winners on a score of 2-17 to 3-11. This augers well for the future of this team and their push for promotion to Division 3.

Kilcummin GAA
CO JUNIOR LEAGUE RD 5: Kilcummin are at home to Annascaul on this Friday at 7.30. Support would be welcome as the lads press for a place in the final. CREDIT UNION CO LEAGUE RD 8: Kilcummin 3 - 22 Na Gael 0-9. COUNTY INVOLVEMENT: Kilcummin GAA Club enjoyed an amazing week of reflected glory revelling in the achievements of our players playing in the Green and Gold. Pride of place this week goes to Kieran Murphy who captained the Kerry Juniors to a Munster title on Wednesday and turned in a powerful performance in midfield to overcome a good Cork team. Sean O Leary followed this up on Friday night when he was part of the Kerry u-20’s that also defeated Cork in this inaugural Munster final, scoring two crucial points from play. All this added to Kevin McCarthy, Paul O Shea and Keith O Leary’s achievements last week means 5 Munster medals have come to the club as well as the honour of 2 captaincies in the space of a week. Well done to all concerned. KILCUMMIN GAA LOTTO: There was no winner on Sunday 1st July, 2018. Numbers drawn were 9, 20, 23, 25. Next Draw Sunday 15th July 2018. Jackpot now €12,250.00.
Killarney Legion
JUNIOR E.K.FINAL: Killarney Legion 4-11 Glenflesk 4-16 (after extra time) A hugely entertaining final saw Glenflesk take the honours in a game that had a bit of everything. At one stage the Legion trailed by 8 pts.and were struggling to keep it at that, the concession of 3 goals in the opening half gave them a mountain to climb. To their credit they showed admirable resilience and persistance to drag themselves back into the contest. Fair to say that the main reason was the performance of Conor McCarthy at full forward who hit 3-2 and was unmarkable and Sean McCarthy was immense at midfield and his black card at the start of extra time had a huge effect on the Legion’s prospects.Adam Moynihan was creative on the ball and indeed his disguised free kick at the death to Stephen McCarthy wrong footed the Glenflesk defence and saw a neat finish to the net.An issue for the Legion was the supply of ball to the inside line was at times sporadic and with Micheál Devlin and Moynihan having to drift back to their own backline to gather - it left a corresponding gap in the half forward line, when these players managed to get forward there was always a threat. The effort to get back on terms certainly took it’s toll as Glenflesk dominated extra time and gradually pulled away to eventually earn the win and congratulations to them. The Legion lads gave their all and couldn’t give anymore on a ferociously hot night that sapped energy in a relentless way. Still a very fine showing by the juniors and

all those involved. CO.LEAGUE : Rathmore 3-12 Killarney Legion1-17 LOTTO: Winning no’s - 4,12,25,28.No winner. Next weeks jackpot €10,200.
Milltown Castlemaine GAA
Many “Injury Time Scores Secure Win For Austin Stacks”. Credit Union County Senior Football League Division 2, Round 8, Milltown/Castlemaine 1-10 Austin Stacks 2-09 (Austin Stacks GAA). Venue: Paddy Burke Memorial Park, Milltown. Referee: James O’Sullivan (Firies). Milltown was the scene yesterday in Round 8 of the Credit Union County Senior Football League Division 2 as the hosts took on table toppers Austin Stacks. It seen the return of former boss Wayne Quillinan who managed the team a few years back and reached the Quarter-Finals of a County Senior Football Championship and is now back in charge of his home club Austin Stacks. Milltown/ Castlemaine came into the clash on the back of an 11 point win away to Kenmare whilst Austin Stacks came into the game knowing they were already 1st on 13 points & would almost certainly guarantee one of the three promotion spots with a win in a venue that they traditionally have found tricky down the years. A fitting tribute was paid to club stalwart Michael Dennehy prior to throw-in with a minutes silence and also a lovely few words in the match programme to commemorate and honour Mike for his work down the years both in the GAA and the local community.
