PROTEST: Ted Cronin of the Party for Animal Welfare pictured with a group of protesters outside Killarney National Park on Wednesday morning.
Angry protest over National Park deer cull
| By Sean Moriarty The Party for Animal Welfare who staged a protest at the gates of Killarney National Park early Wednesday morning - is calling for a contraceptive style approach to reduce the deer herd in Killarney.
EXCLUSIVE
The group, who were out at 7.30am and
left just after 9am, were raising concerns over the current deer cull taking place in the Park. The cull, which is approved and managed by the National Parks and Wildlife Services (NPWS), has been taking place once a week for the last two weeks. Next Wednesday (March 11) has been set aside for the final day of the annual cull and the Park will be closed between

6.30am and 11.30am. Latest figures show that there were 120 deer culled during the 2017-18 season and that 272 were culled last year. Animal rights activist and recent General Election hopeful Ted Cronin led Wednesday’s protest. “Shooting deer is the easy way out, there are other methods,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “The contraceptive method is used a lot in America, animals could be transported to different parts of the country too and while a journey in a horsebox would be stressful for the deer it is still better than killing them.” Cronin claims Wednesday’s cull was cut short after a member of the protest group entered the National Park, and the park rangers were unable to locate that person so had to stop the shooting for safety reasons. However, this was denied by the NPWS. “The cull was neither called off nor interrupted by protest. The cull was completed in full. No people were in the Park during the cull. We would stress that culling is a regular management operational activity of the Park. It would have been an incredibly reckless and irresponsible action had any protestors trespassed during the cull, which had been clearly signed and advertised in the interests of public safety,” said a statement issued to the Killarney Advertiser.
Anger as National Park says roaming deer not its problem | By Sean Moriarty There was widespread anger at Wednesday’s Killarney Municipal Meeting after it was revealed that the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) would do nothing to solve the roaming deer issue in Killarney National Park and the wider Killarney area. The contents of this letter angered every elected member at the Killarney meeting. ‘The management of animals outside the National Park and in the wider Killarney Valley area is a matter for private landowners and culling and control is not the responsibility of the Department beyond the issuing of licences/permits which may be applied for,’ said the letter. “They would badly want to come and talk to the families who have suffered because of this,” said Cllr Cronin. “I feel like beating my head off a strong wall when I see the mentality behind this.” The local Council will now form a deputation to the NPWS office in Leinster House in Dublin.
Killarney photographer gets the Royal approval | By Michelle Crean One Killarney photographer got the Royal seal of approval as his company was chosen as the only agency to officially photograph this week’s Royal visit – with his images beamed on news sites worldwide. Sky News, the BBC, ITV were just some of the news outlets to feature the work of Julien Behal, originally from Woodlawn, and his team. Julien, who previously covered the Prince Harry and Meghan Markle and Prince Charles and Camilla visits last year, was hired by the Dept. of Foreign Affairs who were working in unison with the British Embassy for Prince William and wife Kate’s three day visit to Ireland. He, along with his team, were on hand to capture some of the most intimate moments, from their arrival at Dublin airport on Tuesday, a visit to Aras an Uachtarain, Garden of Remembrance where they laid a wreath, the Guinness Storehouse, and day two in Kildare on Wednesday, and in Galway yesterday
Killarney photographer Julien Behal.
(Thursday). And to top off the experience Julien was specially selected as the only photographer allowed into a shop in Kildare with the couple who shopped for food with two local children as part of the Extern project, a charity which supports vulnerable young people. “I’m very lucky,” Julien told the Killarney Advertiser. “It is a privileged position to be in that you’re the one asked to do it. It was very intimate and interesting to see the interaction between the couple.
There was myself, the couple, the two children the person on the till and a cop. I was the only media allowed in.” Julien hired and worked alongside three of Ireland’s top photographers, Andrew Downes, Kenneth O’Halloran and Tom Honan, saying covering everything would have been impossible. However, Julien was keen to add that without the help of office manager Louise Slevin it wouldn’t have been possible to get the images out to the media so quickly.
“She is a superstar, the heroine of the last three days. The challenge I faced was getting pics from onsite to instant transmission – on the kuff literally, getting them edited, approved, captioned and out. Everyone the couple visited over the three days wanted their photos straight away.” Now he’s planning a totally different type of photography in Syria – to document the lost children of ISIS which he plans to photograph in the coming weeks.

Songbook proving a mystery for Fossa antiques collector
A hidden treasure is proving a mystery for one Killarney man and he’s looking for the public’s help to try and get some answers. | By Michelle Crean Brendan O’Sullivan from Fossa got his hands on a unique songbook made in Manchester and sold by Marks and Spenser on genuine music paper featuring a number of Irish songs. However, out of the 76 songs featured, one called the ‘Killarney March’ he says he’s never heard of. Now, he’s seeking the public’s help to find out more information – and is hop-
ing a local musician will play him the tune. Brendan bought ‘The Favourite Song: Killarney Song and Killarney March’ from an antiques dealer in Macroom. However, the tune named ‘Killarney March’ has left him baffled. “I collect things like this as a hobby and this is unique,” Brendan told the Killarney Advertiser. “I’ve never come across it before. Here
we have a tune about Killarney and with St Patrick’s Day coming up and bands coming over, it’s something that should be recorded.” ‘Killarney March’ was the tune by Adolph Abbey who was born in Pennsylvania while ‘Killarney Song’ was written by Edward Falconer in 1857 just after Queen Victoria visited Killarney. It was later recorded by John McCormack in the early 20 century. “It’s a bit of history no-one knows about and no-one in the world is playing it. I’m excited to hear it, especially as it was written by a fella from Pennsylvania.”
The meeting, which is scheduled for 8pm at the Dromhall Hotel, is one of several taking place across the entire diocese. The Bishop of Kerry, Ray Browne, has called the meeting to allow parishioners voice their opinion on the future of the church in the locality. There are concerns that falling numbers entering the priesthood could have far reaching effects across the entire county. Last June there was widespread anger in the Kilcummin parish when it was left without a resident priest following a shake-up of county parishes at that time. Kilcummin is now served by a number of Killarney-based priests rather than a live-in priest in the parish. “The diocese is coming to the end of its current five year plan,” Mary Fagan, Director of Communications for the Diocese of Kerry, told the Killarney Advertiser. “These meetings are the first stage of a planning process being undertaken by the diocese as it maps out a response to today’s needs. Participants’ input will contribute towards the formation of a plan of action.” Topics up for discussion include, the decreasing number of priests, how funerals will be celebrated in the future, who will support children presenting for First Holy Communion, who will offer pastoral care and support to the sick and the housebound over the coming years, and will churches have close.
Widespread anger as Kilcummin Sewerage Scheme delayed | By Sean Moriarty There’s anger in Kilcummin this week after Irish Water announced that it’s to delay plans for the €2.3m sewerage scheme until 2022. Residents are waiting the best part of 20 years for a sewage scheme in the their area. However, Kerry County Council say they are going to press ahead with €360,000 worth of repairs of the main regional road between Killarney and Kilcummin and charge Irish Water for any future costs in restoring the roads after the sewerage work is done. The announcement was made during Wednesday’s Killarney’s Municipal District meeting after Council officials re-
vealed that Irish Water had back-tracked on a previous promise to start works on the much overdue scheme. The Council were holding back on road repairs and resurfacing works in the area as “doing a road to dig it up again is not the way to do business”. The Council was told at a previous meeting with Irish Water in January that the works would start this year, but a letter read out at this week’s Council meeting confirmed that the scheme will be further delayed until at least 2022. At several previous meetings, elected members were divided over issues regarding the various works that need to be carried out in Kilcummin. Some councillors were calling for an immediate start to the road improvement works
but others argued that it was pointless resurfacing roads in the area when Irish Water would dig them up again to facilitate the scheme. However, they were united on Wednesday when the letter was read out and expressed their disgust at the way Irish Water was treating residents of the local area. Mayor Michael Gleeson said that Irish Water was no longer “worthy of our respect”, while Cllr Niall ‘Botty’ O’Callaghan labelled Irish Water as “liars”. “It is a complete betrayal,” said Cllr Brendan Cronin. Cllr Marie Moloney, who lives in Kilcummin said: “Everytime this is kicked down the road, one month ago they give us a completely different time line”.
Cllr Donal Grady defended colleagues who had now changed their minds. “In fairness, fellow councillors did not know what they now know, they did not expect what we got today,” he told the meeting. “Let’s get together and get this road done”. Senior County Council engineer John Breen said the road repairs will now become a priority and that he would have no hesitation in cross charging Irish Water for future restoration works in the area. “Everything the councillors have said, I have expressed to Irish Water,” he told the meeting. “We will proceed with the road and any additional costs will have to be borne by Irish Water.”

The monies were raised at the Annual Wine and Art evening in the Great Southern Killarney in November – a huge local fundraiser which has taken place in the town for many years. Killarney Rotary Club (KRC) said they were delighted to welcome representatives from the following organisations as beneficiaries of the 2019 Annual Wine and Art evening; Coolick National School, SouthWest Counselling, IHCPT, Stephen Lyne Foundation, Killarney Athletic FC, Tiernaboul National School, Killarney Cougars Basketball Club, Gaelscoil Faithleann, Kerry Stars, Killarney Swimming Club and St Pauls Basket-
ball Club. KRC President Conor Griffin expressed the club’s delight at once again being able to facilitate the event and make contributions to so many local charities and organisations who all make a positive difference in our local community. “Thanks to our sponsors Daly’s SuperValu and Killarney Brewery for their valued contribution each year, the local artists who never fail to showcase their wonderful talent which makes the evening a memorable occasion annually,” he said. He also thanked club members for the effort that is applied every year to ensure the evening runs smoothly. “We are looking forward to the November 2020 event already!”
Pilgrimage cancelled over Coronvirus fears | By Grigoriy Geniyevskiy Children with special needs won’t be able to travel to Lourdes this year due to Coronavirus fears as organisers have put the trip on hold.

Coffee time before India trip | By Grigoriy Geniyevskiy Rebecca Murphy, a fourth year college student, is organising a coffee morning in aid of children in India. Rebecca is planning to go to the Sundarbans in West Bengal as a teaching assistant to help young children who are at risk of child labour due to a lack of an education as part of the Suas Volunteer Programme.
The coffee morning will take place at Murphy’s Bar tomorrow (Saturday) from 10.30am. Raffles and spot prizes will be available. “The Suas Volunteer Programme is completely voluntary in order to improve education and avoid child labour in countries such as Kenya, Zambia and India,” Rebecca told the Killarney Advertiser. “Everyone is welcome to the coffee morning and all support is greatly appreciated.”
The annual trip to Lourdes is organised by the Irish Pilgrimage Trust and enjoyed by many children from the Killarney area and surrounds. But due to the safety and well-being of the children and adults travelling it was agreed to put it on hold for this year. However, the table quiz organised for next Thursday (March 12) to raise funds for this year’s trip will still go ahead. The table quiz will take place at 7.30pm at the Gleneagle. The price per team of four is €40. The entry fee for teams of school goers is €20. Now, the proceeds raised will go towards next year’s trip. “The fundraising goes to the young people. The Trust offers over 1,200 people travelling at Easter and the quiz helps with the costs,” Mike Walker, one of the organisers of the quiz, told the Killarney Advertiser. “We had to cancel the trip this year, be-

cause of the virus, however funds will still go towards the children and next year’s Pilgrimage. We still encourage people to come and we would like to thank everyone who turns up for the quiz. The generosity of the Killarney people is fantastic, and we want as many as possible to support this quiz.”

The awards recognise those who have dedicated themselves to offering the finest experiences, product and services in the industry. Whether established stalwarts, or up and coming newcomers, they endeavour to seek out the paragons who lead the pack and set the benchmark. “Travel and Tourism encompasses a vast array of different businesses to creating exquisite memories for people all over the world,” Steve Simpson, from LUX Travel & Tourism awards said. “Under the CEO, Paudie Healy, they are creating ground-breaking changes on pioneering initiatives and programmes that
they are developing for the inclusion of the full human diversity of people in the tourism industry as employees and customers. Their bottom up/top down approach from working with businesses to advocating for governmental actions and policy change to deliver person centred inclusive employment and experiences is why they have been selected as winners and Universal Access are a company to watch globally for the future.” Paudie Healy, CEO of Universal Access, said they are absolutely delighted to win and to be recognised for the impact that their work is having in the drive for global inclusion. “In Q2 of 2020 we will be launching the Global “iMark” certification and a business growth Tourism for All sustainability programme that we will be rolling out nationally. The businesses will work through continuous development stages of the Global iMark certification for the delivery of excellence as leading inclusive employers and inclusive service providers that will deliver economical, sustainable and social benefit for the business and wider tourism industry and the country,” Paudie said.
Innovative students have decided to up their game when it comes to self-sustainability in their secondary school to try to win a grant for solar panels to cut heating costs. | By Colm Looney Students at St Brendan’s College have formed the ‘Self-Sustainable Sem’ committee and have entered into the national ‘Friends of the Earth Solar Schools’ competition which would allow them to access a grant that would cover 90 percent of the costs for solar panels for their school. This journey began last year with the beginning of the ‘Fridays for Future’ strikes all across the country, when a select group of students decided something should be done on the school’s behalf. “A group of students, myself included, got together with the supervision of Ms Sheehy and Ms Quirke for our first meeting,” Director of the Self-Sustainable Sem, Kacper Bogalecki, told the Killarney Advertiser. “We discussed what kind of action our school could get involved in. We started off with the ºC+ that we made out on the basketball court and worked our way along from there.” They got involved with the RTE Youth Assembly on Climate Action and some of the students attended the event. “Following this it was suggested to us
that we attempt something for the ECO-UNESCO Young Environmentalist Award which occurred around November. We came together to seek out ways in which the school could become more self-sustainable.” So far this year the school has implemented an outright ban on plastic bottles and has replaced all plastic consumables in the canteen with more renewable or recyclable options. After a meeting with Green Party member Dr Anne-Marie Fuller, the group learned of different ways to make the school more eco-friendly such as implementing a uniform renewal system and a TerraCycle scheme. The lads recently posted a video on FOEIreland YouTube and members of the committee asked the people of Killarney for their assistance, to like their post and share it with each other and received an amazing response back. “Our main goal is to reduce our carbon footprint and to hopefully assist our local community at the same time,” Kacper said. “We also aim to make the school more self-sustainable and climate friendly.”

Columnist ANNE LUCEY gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry and beyond
There is no reason a hotel cannot be bought for TDs and Senators An online petition seeks to limit travel expenses paid to TDs and Senators to a bus or train pass. It’s a great idea. The level of expenses paid to our five TDs and three senators is eye watering. It is more than most people earn - it’s tax free, and it is a scandal. I have signed the Uplift petition to end all TDs travel allowances and give them a free travel pass instead. This county has a good train service compared with places like Donegal, which has none. It has bus services, plural. There is no need for any serving TD or Senator to drive to Dublin and indeed some already enjoy or enjoyed the free travel pass. The Kerry Oireachtas members are in the highest paying “bands” in the country. I looked at the “Parliamentary Standard Allowance Payments” for our verbal warriors for December. At first, mistakenly, I thought this is not bad,
The level of expenses paid to our five TDs and three senators is eye watering believing it was for the whole year – no, it was for the month!
FIGURES
This is what our travelling public reps got on December 19, in time for Santa and this is only the elected ones: All figures are Euros. Brassil - €4,365; Ferris - €4,422; Danny Healy-Rae - €4,478 and Micheal Healy-Rae - €4,478. Senators get just slightly less for waffling, cemented by a misguided referendum which kept them in place.
Is it time we put the deer on the pill in Killarney? Contraception, moving deer to other locations and ramps to slow motorists, are among the suggestions by animal welfare protestors at one of the main entrances to Killarney National Park this week, where the second and it seems last scheduled deer cull took place. Is it time we put the deer on the pill in Killarney or else drastically reduce the number of stags. We have too many stags and young bucks in Killarney. There is also venison - it is in high demand internationally and we could bring in shooting parties and carve up the venison in a local abattoir if we had a local abattoir and use it as a foundation for Killarney fat free local food. There are plenty of ideas for business locally if people had space and room in their lives to think of them and an innovative public service to move things along. And there lies the rub. What is the
purpose of having a public meeting in Killarney when there is no room for the public? And not enough room for the press? I speak of the Killarney Municipal area meetings. Squeeze eight people into the downstairs chamber room and it is full. The so called chamber, is in reality, a private board room. Unlike Listowel or Tralee who enjoy a large chamber in the old Tralee town council if they are pressed and are accorded the large facilities of the main county chamber, we in Killarney are all squeezed into half a classroom. There were six members of the press on Wednesday and not enough facilities for writing on. We had to squeeze alongside each other and past officials. Then we had to remain on our limited seats while we were subjected to a remark from Acting Manager John Breen - which we couldn’t answer because we are not allowed address the meeting. Mr Breen, in reply to a question on lit-
Senator Paul Coghlan, who is in Killarney band 10, got €3,276; Mark Daly, who like the Healy-Raes is in the furthest away band 11, got €3,426, and Ned O’Sullivan in band 9 in Listowel got €3,313. And I had a glance at our dear friend in Waterford, the fella who shouts "Up the Ra, tiocfaidh ar La" - at over €4,168 in December. He did alright for someone who said “feck the Free State”. It is a scandal, full stop.
ALTERNATIVE ACCOMMODATION
There is no reason a hotel cannot be bought for them in Dublin and give them a modest room for the night with their breakfast thrown in - just like what our TDs and Senators themselves over the past decade have provided for the homeless families, now at over ten thousand. Oh, and with the bus pass, give them a voucher for the Luas to and from Heuston Station. ter, said the press were not covering the court cases the Council pursued with litter, and not doing their “name and shame” thing. Now it seems it is only our absence Mr Breen and other senior officials in the public service in Killarney and indeed Kerry notice. The free press have wholly inadequate facilities in Tralee too, a matter which we have raised on several occasions to no avail. And one final thing, it is entirely open to the Council officials and their huge legal department and legal consultants to have us informed when a case is coming up - we do not enjoy the generous travel, hourly rates, pensions and other allowances accorded to the public service. Mr Breen and other doubtless hard working officials might bear that in mind next time they launch at us from the privilege of the top table in an overheated room at a meeting which the press cannot address! And I am sure he understands the need to reply to him. Could I also suggest that Council and other meetings where the public and press are now expected to attend, and much missed when they do not, be held in Killarney House where there is a large meeting room downstairs and plenty of empty space upstairs?
Women role models for a generation One is delighted to have the Royals back in Ireland but disappointed they did not visit the Kingdom, and Killarney - one of their most loyal seats! I think Kate and William are models for a generation in their good old fashioned manners and fun and sense of responsibility. I even like the formal old fashioned names they have given their children - George, Charlotte and Louis, in an age of calling children after fashion stores and city streets. But she had too much green. Standing on the steps of the Aer Lingus plane in three shades of green was a bit much. This was followed up by yet another green gown… Sorry, but one can overdo it with the flattery! Another woman who hugely impressed this week was the Cork teacher Nickie Egan from North Presentation Primary School. “You don’t have to be a huge powerful person to make a difference to someone's life,” Ms Egan, who has made room and facilities for homeless families among her 270 pupils, said. She counted 12 homeless families at one stage in her Cork school in an area deprived for generations. She even has washing and drying facilities and will do it for them. Nickie Egan would make you look at teaching in a new light. Her version is public service as it should be.

Funding sought for Killarney CCTV | By Sean Moriarty Plans for CCTV in Killarney town centre have taken a step closer after a Killarney Municipal District meeting was told that funds for three CCTV schemes have been applied for. Cllr Niall Kelleher asked Wednesday’s meeting if there was any progress on the proposal. Kerry County Council officials confirmed that the Council had applied to the Department of Justice for funding and the application is currently being assessed. “Our night time economy is getting bus-
ier and there have been a number of assaults,” Cllr Kelleher told the meeting. “It is imperative for our town that these CCTV screens are provided as soon as possible.” The Data Protection Commission is currently carrying out a national study on the use of CCTV and other technologies by local authorities and An Garda Síochána for security and crime prevention. Once the results of that study are known and department funding is confirmed, the Council will have to follow normal procurement and tender rules before CCTV could become operational in Killarney.

47 years changing the local news landscape On Tuesday, we celebrated our 47th birthday – and that’s down to you our loyal readers and advertisers who have supported us since the beginning. For the few of us that are old enough to cast our minds back to 1973, the source of local news was non-existent. One county newspaper, no mobile phones, internet or social media, no local radio. The Killarney Advertiser was the social media of its day. Today, the Killarney Advertiser is read by over 28,000 people each week. “Killarney people have always been innovative and Danny Casey was one of those, he identified what the community wanted before they needed it, and delivered it,” owner Cormac Casey said. “47 years later this simple innovative idea has survived the dot.com bubble, social media and multiple recessions by simply identifying with the local community. And likewise the community identified with the Killarney Advertiser which is a credit to both the social and commercial community that have supported this simple communication tool, and on behalf of
the Killarney Advertiser, I extend my sincerest gratitude for unwavering support throughout the years.” Cormac added that the Killarney Advertiser has had the privilege of working with so many fantastic people over the years with each and every one putting their own unique stamp on the publication. “And that continues today with our team always pushing the boundaries keeping this 47-year-old fresh faced and full of energy. On behalf of the Killarney Advertiser, I would like to sincerely thank each and every one that has supported and continues to support this little publication from the loyal advertisers, contributors and readers alike, without whom we would have no local voice,” he said. “The Killarney Advertiser was the first free weekly in Ireland and today the concept is common place in most Irish towns, changing the local news landscape. We are very proud of this fact.”
There will be pre-parade entertainment on Main Street with Padraig Buckley and Killarney School of Music. The New Hampshire Police Pipe and Drum Band will take up position pre-parade at ANAM Cultural Centre on the East Avenue Road from 12.30pm to 1.30pm, and post-parade the main stage will host the Bergen Police Pipe and Drum Band from New Jersey. The festivities on Main Street will be brought to a conclusion from 4.15pm with Celtic Steps on the main stage. “The festival is shaping up to be a huge community event, this year we are celebrating The Earth/An Chré as the theme
for our parade to celebrate the planet we live on, the ground that sustains us and the world we live in and share with 7.8 billion other inhabitants,” Paul Sherry, Chairperson of the organising committee, told the Killarney Advertiser. “Marvel at the spectacular floats, clap and cheer for the marching bands, welcome the town’s community groups and sports clubs, meet the Disney characters and join in all the fun and keep your eyes peeled for an invasion of Earth Loving Bumble Bees.” In consultation with Kerry County Council and the Gardai, the committee have drawn up a full safety and traffic management plan for the parade. The committee advise that parade floats and vehicles have to arrive at Mission Road from the Port Road and Cathedral Place side. Traffic will not be allowed to travel down Mission Road towards the cathedral.
Skateboard park plans progressing Kerry County Council will reveal plans for a skateboard park in Killarney later this year. Cllr Donal Grady has been calling for the provision for such an amenity for years and he brought it up again at Wednesday’s Municipal District Meet-
ing. The meeting was told that the project had made significant progress and it is anticipated that a proposal would be made to Council members in the next three to four months. “I am delighted,” said Cllr Grady. “It is nice to know this is in progress.”

Fitzgerald Stadium looking for volunteers | By Grigoriy Geniyevskiy Fitzgerald Stadium is looking for safety stewards to fill the voluntary numbers up. As Kerry continues to battle it out on pitch, volunteers are sought after, to be a part of the steward’s team. The Munster Council is willing to arrange a course for stewards. 23 have currently completed the course and there was even 10 of them on duty at the recent Kerry and Meath match. The Munster Council supply around 50
stewards and Fitzgerald Stadium has to supply another 50 stewards. “Kerry will have to keep winning but we’re always looking for people,” John Lenihan, Supervisor for Community Employment Scheme and Event Controller for games, told the Killarney Advertiser. “We never have a problem and are very experienced. Some of us have 20 to 30 years of experience. We had four games played recently while other places had to cancel their games. The upkeep of the pitch is a credit to our contractor and community employment workers. We’re proud of it,” he added.

Peter’s poetry to aid local man’s recovery
One local man, keen to help a local man back on his feet, has penned a book of poetry. | By Michelle Crean It’s the third such book by Peter Doyle from Ross Road, and second one to help others. Peter, who works in Randles Hotel, says he’ll donate the proceeds from the book ‘Are You Writing?’ to his friend Sully, who is continuing his recovery from sepsis. “I’ve been struggling and surviving more than living,” Peter told the Killarney Advertiser this week. “I know Sully all my life. The reason I’m donating the money is that Sully has gone through more and I wanted to help.” The title of the book came about as Peter
explained that in the past he has written two other books, with proceeds from the last one in 2013 donated to Pieta House. “‘Are You Writing’ is a question people always ask me and the last few years I haven’t been writing.” His latest offering is primarily poetry with pros and social commentary, he explained. “It’s been in my head the last year. The main theme is the passing of time and how deceptive it can be.” Peter has ordered 300 books and they’ll be on sale for €8 from tomorrow (Saturday) in Easons, Lir Café, Centra and Amber in Muckross.
New disabled parking bay at East Avenue Road Work has commenced on a new disabled parking bay on the East Avenue Road. The existing one was removed following the refurbishment and extension of the ANAM Arts and Cultural Centre at the same location. Cllr Brendan Cronin has repeatedly called for the blue bay to be reinstated. He was concerned the people attending
the nearby Killarney GP medical centre would not be able to do so as there no longer was a suitable parking space available. At a previous meeting of Killarney Municipal District before Christmas, he asked for the bay to be reinserted. It was confirmed at Wednesday’s meeting that work had started on a new bay between the cultural centre and the entrance to Great Southern Killarney.

Back to drawing board for Killarney-Farranfore road | By Sean Moriarty Kerry County Council will, this month, appoint an engineering consultation firm to oversee phase one to four of the proposed new road between Killarney and Farranfore. The much needed scheme was put on the long finger by the outgoing Government as part of its several cost cutting measures. New rules put in place under the Public Spending Code, which was introduced by the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform in 2012, mean all previously approved projects need to be reap-
praised. As a result, phases one to four of the Killarney to Farranfore project will need a feasibility study and an environmental impact report before moving on to statutory processes like compulsory purchase orders and oral hearings. “It is very frustrating for the general public,” said Cllr Niall Kelleher who questioned the process at this week’s Killarney Municipal District meeting. If the project successfully gets through the statutory consent phase it can move on to phase five, six and seven which are the land acquisition, construction and closeout phases. “We need to prioritise this road,” added Cllr Niall ‘Botty’ O’Callaghan.

Killarney student awarded scholarship A Killarney girl has been awarded a scholarship as part of the Women in STEM2D (WiSTEM2D) Award Programme. Caoimhe Doyle, who is studying Mathematical Sciences, was one of five UCC students presented with the scholarship in University College Cork (UCC). The acronym WiSTEM2D refers to Women in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, Manufacturing and Design. The WiSTEM2D programme underlines J&J’s commitment to developing and implementing high-impact strategies to support female students undertaking STEM2D degree courses at UCC and in universities around the world. The WiSTEM2D programme is unique in terms of offering young women studying STEM2D courses the opportunity to engage with women working in those careers. First-hand experience of site tours, mentoring, project and career workshops enable students to visualise exactly what it is like to have a career in STEM2D. “At J&J, we fundamentally believe in the idea that an equal world is an enabled world,” Liz Dooley, Head of Biologics, Clinical Supply Chain at Janssen Sciences Ireland Unlimited Company, one of the Janssen Pharmaceutical Companies of Johnson & Johnson, said. “We understand that we have a responsibility to support these young women who will become future leaders, and we take great pride in our involvement with UCC in supporting the next generation of STEM2D students.”

Over €6,000 was this week donated to charity Aware thanks to the helps of Killarney locals who once again took part in the annual Dundag Dip. The 11th Christmas Day event, organised each year by Niki McCarthy in memory of her 26-year-old sister Sylvan, was another success.
To date, the annual dips have raised over €55,000, Niki explained to the Killarney Advertiser. “It’s an amazing achievement as at first we only had about 20 people participating. This year we had around 250,” she said. “I’d like to thank all the participants, Derek and Conor O’Leary, Order of Malta, MD O’ Sheas, SuperValu and The Franciscan Friary.”

Coordinator of KASI, Marilyn Catapat-Counihan, is very excited about this new initiative. The Women’s Shed, just like the Men’s Shed will be a place of ‘creativity’ and also a social place to meet other women with shared interests. The group will focus on sewing, quilting, knitting, embroidery and other crafty activities. To kick start the project, the group received a grant of €950 from the Community Enhancement Programme by the Dept. of Rural and Community Development and administered by Kerry County Council. The grant was used to buy four sewing machines. The Women’s Shed is open to every woman and not just for Migrant women,
Marilyn explained. “Like most of our projects, we want this not just exclusively for asylum seekers, refugee or other migrant women, but also for indigenous/local women in Killarney or any part of Kerry, if they are willing to travel.” The meetings and activities will be held in their beautiful and cosy log cabin which is located in KASI’s own Community Garden in Ballycasheen, Killarney. “I think having the activities in the log cabin right where our community garden is ideal. It is such a beautiful and therapeutic place to be. I know that women will be inspired to create something, make connections and have fun,” she added. They are meeting every Friday from 10am to 1pm and Wednesday from 4 – 7pm. For further information contact Marilyn at 086 79 15 742.

Seven houses were searched in the town by Kerry Divisional Drug Unit with the assistance of uniform Gardaí from Kenmare, Kerry Roads Policing Unit, and Southern Region Dog Unit as part of Operation Thor. Cannabis plants worth €3,200, €955 of cannabis herb and €170 of cocaine, mushrooms and MDMA were seized and will now be sent for analysis. No arrests were made but Gardaí are following a definite line of enquiry. Four checkpoints were also carried out during the course of the day where Gardaí spoke to motorists about road safety and emphasised the need to make sure their vehicles are road worthy. Gardaí and Garda dog "Buddy” visited Kenmare Secondary School, Pobalscoil Inbhear Scéine and spoke to Transition Year students about the role of the dog unit and then gave a presentation on drugs and the impact they can have. A crime prevention stand was held at
SuperValu, Kenmare where Gardaí gave out crime prevention advice on personal safety and how to keep your home more secure. The roads policing unit also demonstrated their drink and drugs testing kits. "The focus of the operation was to gather intelligence and disrupt people believed to involved in the sale and supply of drugs in Kenmare,” Superintendent Flor Murphy of Killarney Garda Station, said. “This operation reflects the commitment of An Garda Síochána to protect the communities in Kenmare from the illegal drugs trade. "Community engagement was another main focus of the operation - it is at the core of what we do. School visits, checkpoints and crime prevention stands allows us to build on the strong relationships that we have with people in our towns and villages.”

Children raise funds for Australian bushfires | By Grigoriy Geniyevskiy Students of Gaelscoil Faithleann spent last Friday raising funds to help Australia deal with the aftermath of the recent bushfires which left a huge impact on the country’s environment. From junior infants and up, the boys and girls dressed up as doctors and brought along toys such as teddy bears. Organ-
ised by teachers and parents, the pupils learned all about the Australian bushfires and its global effect. “They get to learn a greater sense of community,” teacher Helena Ní Bhraoin told the Killarney Advertiser. “We do lots of fundraisers and all the classes are involved. They were all informed about the bushfires and they all wanted to help. It’s great to incorporate global awareness for the children,” she added.
PANTO TIME: Children from Rathmore will bring the story of Beauty and The Beast to the stage this weekend.
Snowdrop planting rescheduled for tomorrow Snowdrops will be planted in memory of Archdeacon Fr Michael Murphy in town tomorrow morning (Saturday).

The event, which was scheduled for last Saturday, was cancelled due to Storm Jorge. Killarney Looking Good Committee have now rescheduled the event to tomorrow and plan to plant snowdrops in honour of their wonderful friend, who is deeply missed since his passing, in the green area on Mission Road from 9am to 1pm. It is a once in four year opportunity to mark this day and volunteers don't have to stay for the entire session. "It is the committee’s intention the planting will improve biodiversity while also bringing people together, getting some gentle exercise and fresh air,” Eileen O'Donoghue, Killarney Municipal Officer, said. “We have an amazing National Park on our doorstep and this is a great opportunity for people to come together and enhance the link between the town and the park. You don't need to be an expert

Well-known musician celebrates 80th in style It wasn’t quite the case of getting the band back together but John O'Meara came very close when he celebrated his 80th birthday with his family in The International Hotel Killarney on Sunday. FAMILY OF FOUR: Pa McGillycuddy celebrating his 70th birthday party in The Parkavon Hotel on Saturday night with his wife Bridie, son Timmy and daughter Tracey. Picture: Eamonn Keogh
No horsing about as farrier Pa celebrates his 70th birthday
Back in the day, the Ballyhar man was the frontman of one of Kerry’s best loved bands, The Moonshiners. The four piece group, which also included Mike Kelliher, and John’s three sons Johnny, Dermot and Michael, were well-known on the music scene in Killarney over the years. John now prefers the quiet life and opted for a family get-together for his big day out.
On Sunday, he was joined by his wife Delia and extended family as they marked the occasion in style. “My mother is 84 and the main thing is both have their health,” said Johnny. “My father is not into big scenes anymore.” John Sr., like his son Johnny now, was also a well-known figure on the roads of Kerry as he drove the minibus for St Francis’ Special School in Beaufort.
It is not easy to catch Pa McGillycuddy off guard. Last year the well-known local farrier and his extended family celebrated 50 years as the Farrier-in-Residence at Killarney Racecourse. You don’t build up a business and reputation like that without years of careful planning and keeping a close eye on what is going on around you. Last Saturday, he celebrated his 70th birthday. The initial plan was to have a family meal in the Great Southern Killarney and then head to The Parkavon Hotel on the Muckross Road to continue the celebration. His suspicions should have been raised when some members of the family failed to turn up on time for the meal. His wife
Bridie, his son Timmy (a third generation farrier) and his wife Louise were there. But there was no sign of his daughter Tracey and her husband Will Motherway. Maybe they were delayed by the storm? Not a chance. Tracey had arranged for her aunt and Pa’s sister to come home from Boston for the occasion. No one apart from Tracey, Will, aunty Rose O‘Sullivan and her daughter Deirdre, knew what was going on. “We thought it was strange she was running late,” Bridie said. “Next thing, Rose walked in to the room, Pa was white as a sheet. He was only speaking to her on the phone the previous Monday and she did not let on a thing.”
FAMILY FUN: Pa McGillycuddy celebrating his 70th birthday in The Parkavon Hotel on Saturday night with family and friends. Included are his wife Bridie, son Timmy, daughter Tracey, daughter-in-law Louise McGillycuddy, son-in-law Will Motherway, grandchildren Liam, Aobhla and Bronagh Motherway, Orianne and Ewan McGillycuddy. Other forms of protective growing Following on from last week’s article about polytunnels and glasshouses I received a few queries about other forms of protective growing. There are several types which are often mentioned, for example, propagators, electric propagators, cold frames and cloches. There are fundamental differences between these different options. A cold frame is built in the garden, usually with one side against a south facing wall. It is a low structure with a sloped transparent roof. They are built mainly to protect young plants from adverse weather conditions. Cold frames are excellent for overwintering perennials which might be susceptible to rotting in our wet weather. Cloches are usually dome shaped and transparent cover, generally used for a single plant. These protect plants from frost, snow, hail and rain, and are excellent for protecting herbaceous plants such as alstroemerias, dahlias, eryngiums etc. Slugs love the extra warmth and vegetation under a cloche! There are also tunnel cloches, which are usually about a metre wide, tunnel shaped and transparent. These are ideal for using over several plants or over rows of early veg. It is important to secure all types of cloches as they are light and prone to be carried off in the wind.

Both cold frames and cloches are used outdoors and rely on sun and soil temperature to keep your plants safe. Propagators on the other hand are primarily used indoors. The simplest form of a propagator is a pot with a clear lid, or a clear polythene bag over it, propped up by some bamboo canes. The point of all propagators is temperature and moisture regulation. Once the soil in the propagator is wet, the humidity should self-regulate, minimising the need for interference, and thus minimising the chance of fungi and moulds attacking seedlings and cuttings. Electric propagators have heat cables under the tray for the soil, enabling you to start sowing much earlier. These are available in all sizes and are a super addition to your equipment if you are serious about your veg or bedding plants. There are handy windowsill shaped ones, as well as table type propagators, which are essentially a self-contained unit.

Kerry chefs take to the waters and the wild Delving deeply and foraging furiously, teams of highly skilled chefs in Killarney, have taken to the waters and the wild to prepare their menus for an innovative food trail that will form a key part of the inaugural Wander Wild Festival later this month.

Kerry is home to some of the finest suppliers and artisan producers in the world and town centre pubs and restaurants in the county’s tourist capital are determined to showcase a true taste of the Kingdom on a plate on Saturday, March 28. In keeping with the Wander Wild ethos of sustainability, the short supply chain and local sourcing is not only better for the planet but those involved are anxious to prove that it tastes fresher – and better – too.
Killarney is home to some of the most accomplished chefs in the country with numerous awards adorning the walls of the local hostelries and restaurants for the sheer quality of their cuisine. The Saturday food trail will be one of the highlights of the weekend as Ireland’s adventure capital prepares to take a walk on the wild side with an innovative and exciting new festival for outdoor enthusiasts, culture and food aficionados and great escapers. The Wander Wild Festival in Killarney, from March 27-29, will be a real celebration of all things outdoors through adventure, pageantry, drama and exhibitions. Events will offer a true glimpse of what the real Killarney is all about with a spectacular opening equinox parade through the streets that will dramatically celebrate the birth of spring.

Hilary Mantel’s peerless, Booker Prize-winning novels ‘Wolf Hall’ and ‘Bring up the Bodies’ have dazzlingly charted the rising and falling arcs of Tudor politician and power broker Thomas Cromwell. Her new narrative seen in ‘The Mirror & the Light’ brings her trilogy to its final, thrilling conclusion. This detailed novel, depicts the final years of Mr Cromwell's life, from the execution of Anne Boleyn in 1536 to Cromwell’s own execution in 1540 and dives really deep into all of the grittier details of his life as it came to a close, including a glimpse at how his sanity sneakily shifted with his increased power. At the start of Hilary’s third installment to her series, we see that all of England lies at his feet, ripe for innovation and religious reform. He slyly uses his influence to gently prompt the motives of the king, in order to
claimed 2018 breakout album, ‘Loner’. The album includes some new tracks such as ‘Feelings Are a Thing of the Past’, ‘Nothing’s Impossible’ and ‘Feel the Way I Want’, the last of which was released prior to announcing her album. The indie rocker has also organised a tour across America in order to support this album.

A WEEKLY ROUND-UP OF NEWS • VIEWS FROM KERRY AND AROUND THE WORLD

Man uses fishing rod to reel in Versace necklace from store Police are searching for a man who used a fishing rod to rob a Versace necklace off a mannequin through a shop window in Melbourne.
Kerry photographer’s image wins award Election counts can be long and arduous days – but one Kerry professional photographer has been honoured for this unique image. Domnick Walsh, who owns Eye Focus, came second in the politics category at the 42nd annual awards of The Press Photographers Association of Ireland (PPAI) in Dublin on Friday night. It’s the eight award from the PPAI that he’s received and this time around he was the only photographer to win an award from
Trump CORNER
outside Dublin. His image ‘Election Kerry 2019’ captured a young boy sitting between his brother’s legs at a very long local election count held in Tralee last year. The judges said it ‘was a quirky and refreshing take from the tedium of a poll count’. “I’m thrilled, actually it took me by shock,” Domnick told the Killarney Advertiser. Explaining that he was tired and decided to sit on the ground for a quick break, he
said the shot just naturally happened. “I was sitting on the ground taking shots and I just turned and spotted this young fella. The older brother was minding him.” The judging panel was chaired by photographer Frank Miller and former picture editor, The Herald, Glasgow, Jim Connor and internationally acclaimed photographer Edmond Terakopian. The multimedia award was judged by Michael Lee, RTÉ cameraman and Philip Bromwell, RTÉ News video and mobile journalist. The Press Photographers Association of Ireland ‘Press Photographer of the Year 2020’ Exhibition, featuring 109 prints, will tour the RDS, Dublin Airport, DLR LexIcon and a number of other locations throughout the country.
The man spent nearly three hours trying to hook the $800 costume jewellery piece off the dummy's neck after cracking a hole in the Little Collins Street highend fashion store. Police said the thief used two different-sized rods before eventually pulling in the chain of the Medusa medallion just after 2am. "It's pretty outrageous and courageous,” Lestyle owner Steven Adigrati said. “To think he went back once, then twice, with a fishing rod and a hook, to make a little hole in the window then capture that necklace, I was pretty shocked." Detective Senior Constable Bede Whitty added; "It's fairly blatant and it's quite bold as well. I've not seen someone use a fishing rod to commit a burglary in the past".
Trump makes false claims about Coronavirus Trump has made spurious claims about Coronavirus in a phone call with Sean Hannity, an American talk show host and conservative political commentator. The Coronavirus has more than 95,200 global cases according to the latest figures from the World Health Organisation with over 3,270 reported deaths. The president's statements to Sean Hannity were declared while millions of people were watching live - saying the World Health Organisation's data-driven assessment of the global death rate; "I think the 3.4 percent is really a false number”.
"Now, this is just my hunch," Trump said. “Based on a lot of conversations with a lot of people that do this, because a lot of people will have this, and it's very mild, they'll get better very rapidly, they don't even see a doctor, they don't even call a doctor, you never hear about those people, so you can't put them down in the category of the overall population, in terms of this corona flu, and/or virus. So, you just can't do that." Trump continued by discarding his own administration's advice to stay home if you're feeling sick: "If we have thousands or hundreds of
thousands of people that get better, just by, you know, sitting around and even going to work, some of them go to work, but they get better, and then when you do have a death, like you've had in the state of Washington, like you had one in California, I believe you had one in New York." No deaths have been reported in New York. Trump continued to demonstrate his ignorance of seasonal flu; “We average from 27,000 to 77,000 deaths a year. Who would think that? I never knew that until six or eight weeks ago”.

Girl gets bionic arm and phone call from Luke Skywalker A young Star Wars fan and amputee has received a bionic R2-D2 limb and a call from Mark Hamill who played Luke Skywalker. Bella Tadlock, of Tallahassee, Florida, raised around €12,500 for her bionic hero arm. The 11-year-old launched a campaign that first caught actor Mark Hamill's eye in November. Hamill, who played Luke Skywalker in Star Wars movies, retweeted his 3.6 million followers with her appeal. Following a successful fundraising campaign, Bella became the first person in
the US to receive R2-D2-style customised multi-grip arm. During a Skype call she spoke to her hero Luke Skywalker. She showed off her new hand by picking up a bottle. "This is completely life-changing,” Bella’s mother, Pamela Tadlock, said. “Since Isabella was adopted at a few weeks old she has overcome huge obstacles and endured many surgeries. Now she has a hand, with no surgery and no pain. I’m so grateful to Open Bionics and Hanger Clinic. Bella likes Luke Skywalker because he lost a hand and was adopted like her."

Kerry Enterprise Month launched The annual Kerry Month of Enterprise has been officially launched by the Cathaoirleach and Chief Executive of Kerry County Council.
Now in its seventh year, Kerry Month of Enterprise has gone from strength to strength with the objective of shining a spotlight on just some of the enterprise activities on offer all year round across Kerry. The month is a collaborative initiative between Kerry County Council, Kerry Local Enterprise Office, Enterprise Ireland, North, East & West Kerry Development; South Kerry Partnership Development, IDA Ireland, Udarás na Gaeltachta, IRD Duhallow and IT, Tralee. The month gives established businesses and budding entrepreneurs an opportunity to network and discover the assistance available to
them in growing and sustaining a business in Kerry. The month has become the annual go-to event for entrepreneurs in Kerry. The calendar of events for 2020, which can be viewed at www.kmoe.ie, includes over 50 events across the month catering for all stages of business across many sectors from start-ups to established and growing businesses. All businesses are advised to book well in advance. “Kerry Month of Enterprise is the ideal ‘shop window’ to show the wide range of supports on offer to start-ups and growing businesses in the county,” Kerry County Council Chief Executive Moira Murrell said. “It is a strong example of collaboration on a local level across enterprise support agencies and the local business community.”
Large asteroid will fly by the Earth next month On April 29, an asteroid estimated to be between 1.1 and 2.5 miles wide will fly by Earth. If it does, according to NASA back when the asteroid was first found, the asteroid is "large enough to cause global effects". The asteroid is named 52768 (1998 OR2) and was first discovered in 1998. It will cross Earth within 6,290,589km, travelling at 31,319km per hour. The flyby is expected to occur on Wednesday, April 29, at 9:56 GMT ac-
cording to NASA's Center for Near Earth Object Studies. The asteroid has been identified as a potentially hazardous object as it travels past the orbit of Earth, but it is not officially on the list of potential future Earth impact events of NASA. These are obtained and tracked by NASA's Sentry Program, a highly automated collision monitoring system that continuously searches the current asteroid database for potential impact possibilities with Earth across the nexus.
Irish anti-fracking groups launch New York fundraiser A fundraising drive to support the legal costs of the opposition to the proposed fracked gas LNG Terminal on the Shannon River was launched yesterday (Thursday) in New York City. NGOs are challenging the designation of the proposed terminal as a European ‘Project of Common Interest’. The designation assures developments of “the most rapid treatment legally possible” and may be considered as being of ‘overriding public interest’, as well as
qualifying for financial support. A previous legal challenge to the extension of the planning permission for the terminal for five years is currently before the European Court of Justice. A preliminary Advocate General’s opinion on that case is expected on April 30 next. The new challenge is now being expedited by the Irish courts. Eddie Mitchell of Love Leitrim, who was a guest speaker at the event, announced the drive at a meeting in New York City entitled ‘Global Impacts of Fracking: From Pennsylvania to Europe and Back’.
"We banned fracking in Ireland because we listened to the alarm raised by affected communities like those living in Pennsylvania,” he explained. “We're not going to facilitate the further poisoning of those people by importing fracked LNG into Ireland." Andy Gheorghiu of the Brussel based Food and Water Action Europe, highlighted the importance of the case across Europe. “This isn’t simply a case about Ireland – none of the projects on the PCI list which opens up €3 billion of funding were as-
sessed for sustainability or climate. Ireland is leading the way in challenging the fossil fuel lock in proposed by the European Commission, in spite of the Green New Deal. This is a real, effective Climate Action with far-reaching consequences for Ireland and Europe’s energy choices – and for all our futures.” Before the evening event the activists met with Satya Tripathi, UN Assistant Secretary-General and Head of New York Office at UN Environment to discuss support for a global ban on fracking to tackle the plastic and climate crisis.

SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL
Beauty - By Jill O'Donoghue
Jill is available for advice and beauty consultations, at Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio. Call 064 6632966
What to expect when having your first facial You exercise regularly, you eat right and you get your hair cut often - so why wouldn’t you get a facial? The first thing everyone sees is your face, you can’t cover it like you can cover your body. As with most other beauty and health matters, facials help prevent and treat common problems. Facials are important for both men and women as it’s
5
important to keep on top of things that change with the season e.g. in autumn when you turn the heat on for the first time you might notice a change in your skin. Inside heat can dehydrate skin and facials can dramatically correct this issue by increasing moisture. In April as the weather warms up a bit, skin can get a little oilier and create breakouts. This can all be counteracted by having a facial. So, when you arrive at the studio you will fill out a short consultation, to make sure you’re not allergic to anything. You will be shown to your treatment room where you’ll comfortably enjoy a very warm treatment couch and your therapist will come into the room when you’re ready to start the facial. Skin analysis is then preformed and the correct facial is used to suit to your needs. A deep cleanse and exfoliation is done depending which one is suitable for your skin type; hot towels or steam for extractions followed by a specific lymphatic drainage massage which is fantastic to help increase the glow in your skin and is also anti-ageing. A mask is then applied, and after the correct eye and lip cream, serum, moisturiser and SPF. For more information or make a booking call Jill on 064 6632966. Your skin will thank you.

Simply put, the workshops place the focus on the experience rather than the finished product. They are a growing team that facilitates weekly workshops, parties, camps and pop-up events nationwide, led by co-directors, Sheena and David Fortune. The workshops are coordinated by qualified teachers and experienced professionals in fine art painting, visual communications, ceramic design, costume and art teaching in a safe and structured manner. Sheena and David recently relocated to Kerry and have weekly workshops and camps in Tralee. “We are delighted to be bringing our workshops to Killarney and look forward to a full spring/summer season of creative activities at Muckross Traditional Farms,” Sheena said. “Our Easter camp will be set in the enchanting Schoolhouse at Muckross, nestled in the incredibly beautiful Killar-
ney National Park. We'll go beyond the studio, where children will research and draw inspiration from their natural surroundings in the neighbouring farms and woodlands. The camp will cover a wide variety of media, such as sketchbook recording, clay, process painting, mixed media collage, printmaking, still life drawing, landscape drawing and painting on easels (weather permitting). There will also be a host of games and activities where children will have the opportunity to engage with the working farms and animals.” Contact: www.meandthemoon.ie, Facebook and Instagram: @meandthemoonworkshops.

HEALTH & FITNESS Advice - By Tara Tangney Brian is available for advice and fitness consultations, Call 087 403 0894 or email info@activate.ie • www.activate.ie
Five nutrition myths that need to go away 1. CARBS ARE BAD
Carbohydrates are the macronutrients that get the bad wrap but many foods fit under this umbrella. Carbohydrates break down into glucose, which is your body’s preferred source of fuel and our bodies require carbohydrates daily to fuel the brain.
2. FAT MAKES YOU FAT
Contrary to popular belief, fat doesn’t make you fat. Fat actually helps you stay fuller longer and absorb important fat soluble vitamins. However, fat is the most calorie dense macronutrient – so a little bit goes a long way.
3. I’M DRINKING JUICE AND IT’S GOOD FOR ME
When you are consuming fruit juice you are getting the sugar without the fibre. Make water your beverage of choice and eat a piece of whole fruit instead. When making juice at home use mostly vegetables and add in a little bit of fruit.
4. I NEED TO EAT LESS AND FEEL HUNGRY TO LOSE WEIGHT
Research shows that restrictive dieting increases cravings for both fat and sugar which can trigger overeating. Skipping meals or limiting intake can lead to under eating and binging. Eat a variety of whole foods consistently and fuel your body throughout the day.
5. THE MINDSET OF “I ATE AND NOW NEED TO GO EXERCISE”
If you have a treat, enjoy it and move on. There is no need to go workout because you had a slice of pizza or cake. If you eat well and exercise consistently having a slice of pizza or whatever your thing is every now and then will not derail your progress. For solid and sensible nutrition coaching and advice, email Tara and Jacinta at: nutrition@activate.ie.
RECYCLE RIGHT: Pupils from Holy Family NS Rathmore learn about recycling from KWD.
Children learn the importance of recycling
KWD Recycling Right representative Shauna Murphy has been out visiting schools throughout Kerry again, educating and encouraging students to recycle correctly. The initiative follows on from the success of the ‘KWD Kids Recycling’ programme in 2010, and “Recycle Right” initiative in 2017/2018. Shauna has visited over 24 schools throughout the county in the last number of weeks. The goal is to further educate young people on the importance of recycling and enable students and teachers to understand the role of recycling and how to dispose of their waste and recycling correctly and responsibly. “This will enable students to champion best practice when it comes to recycling so they can transfer this knowledge to
their homes and influence greater recycling within their schools,” Shauna said. “Once again, the reaction from the students and teachers has been very positive and KWD Recycling are confident that all involved will now have the knowledge to dispose of their waste and recycling correctly. All of this information is available on our interactive website where you can view videos on how we recycle your waste.” If your school is interested in a visit from KWD Recycling, please contact Shauna by email info@kwd.ie. For more information please see our website www.kwdkids.com

Peugeot 208 named European Car of the Year Peugeot’s 208 has been named as the ‘European Car of the Year’ for 2020. The coveted award is decided by 60 European journalists and is usually announced at the Geneva International Motorsport which was due to get underway yesterday (Thursday) but the Swiss government announced that all events with 1,000 people or more would not be allowed go ahead in an effort to contain the spread of Coronavirus. Without the razzmatazz of the world famous motor show, ‘Car of the Year’ judges decided to announce this year’s award online, and on Tuesday revealed that the Peugeot 208 – available locally from
Reen’s Car Sales in Rathmore – was the 2020 winner of the sought-after award. The all-new Peugeot 208 is the sixth model from the French stable to be named as ‘Car of the Year’. It follows the 3008 SUV in 2017, the compact hatch 308 in 2014, the 307 in 2002, the 405 in 1988 and the 504 in 1969. “I am particularly proud that the all-new Peugeot 208 has just won the 2020 ‘Car of the Year’ prize,” Peugeot CEO JeanPhilippe Imparato said. “This trophy underlines the excellence of the work and great commitment of all the teams of the brand. Three Peugeot ‘Cars of the Year’ are currently on road with the 3008 SUV and the 308 alongside the all-new 208.”

Sport Škoda goes electric for the first time Škoda is offering a model from its vRS family with plug-in-hybrid drive for the first time. The new Škoda Octavia vRS iV has been fitted with a 1.4 TSI petrol engine and an 85-kW electric motor delivering a combined power output of 180 kW. Featuring black details on the bodywork, the Octavia vRS iV can immediately be recognised as sporty top-of-the-range variant of Škoda’s bestseller, now in its fourth generation. The Czech car manufacturer will offer the new Octavia in three other electrified versions as well. The Octavia iV is a plug-in hybrid delivering 150 kW (204 PS) and is available in the SE and SE L trims. Two e-TEC variants producing 81 kW (110 PS) and 110 kW (150 PS) make use of mild hybrid
technology for the first time at Škoda. “By introducing the Octavia RS iV, we are starting a new chapter in the success story of our RS portfolio,” Christian Strube, Škoda Board Member for Technical Development, said. “We are using plug-in-hybrid drive in a sporty top-ofthe-range model for the first time. In the new Octavia RS iV, this both increases performance and reduces fuel consumption as well as CO2 emissions.” Škoda has fitted the Octavia vRS iV with a 1.4-litre TSI petrol engine (110 kW/150 PS) and an 85-kW electric motor. Together, they have a combined power output of 180 kW (245 PS). It is not yet known when the car will arrive in Ireland but Liam Lynch Motors in Farranfore is the local Škoda dealer and they will know more – give them a call.

Killarney receives over €120k Community Support Fund | By Michelle Crean 52 groups across the Killarney area and surrounds received a total of €121,000 in the latest round of the Community Support Fund. This week, Kerry County Council announced details of the allocation of €750,000 in funding support for com-
munity groups and projects across the county under the Community Support Fund for 2020. A total of 287 groups and projects received grant aid worth €485,000 this year while a proportion of the fund, totalling €265,000, is being retained to leverage funding from other funding streams for strategic projects at Municipal District level.
The fund, which is in its sixth year, has now supported 1,500 projects since 2015 to the value of €4.5m since its establishment. Councillors in the four Municipal Districts met last week to decide on the allocations and unanimously welcomed the provision of support to the recipients. Councillors congratulated all the community groups and acknowledged
49
the tremendous voluntary work that they do. “The Community Support Fund has targeted funding towards a very wide range of community-based projects and has provided support to community councils, chamber alliances, tidy towns groups and other organisations in a very progressive and structured way,” Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr Niall Kelleher, said. “The retention of part of the fund to help to leverage funding from other sources and to co-fund projects with other funding streams has proven to be an enormous success in recent years and will be successful again, I hope, in 2020.”

Council to construct three housing units in Glenbeigh Councillor Michael Cahill has received confirmation from Kerry County Council that they are to demolish the old Glendale building in Glenbeigh Village and construct three new housing units. The Council has also confirmed that they will go for Part 8 Planning Permission in early 2021. The Fianna Fáil Councillor said this was good news on a number of fronts; that there are a number of housing applicants in the Glenbeigh area, the property was derelict and unsightly, and it was a danger to the public. A number of slates were blown off during the storm over the weekend. The Rossbeigh Councillor said he had also received confirmation from the Council that the building will be made safe.

Kerry business women plan ‘March for Change’ fundraising walk Kerry Businesswomen’s Network might be serious about business – but they know that there are plenty less obvious ways of encouraging inspiration, building bonds, and crossing bridges! So this Sunday, to celebrate International Women’s Day, they’ve planned a 5km fundraising walk ‘March for Change’ in the Demesne, Killarney, starting and
ending at the Golden Gates in front of Killarney House, beginning at 10.30am. All proceeds will go to the Kerry Rape & Sexual Abuse Centre, and the Kerry Women’s Refuge & Support Centre. The Network has chosen International Women’s Day to show solidarity with two essential support organisations for women in Kerry, on whose services, so many women continue to rely on in their hour of need. If you haven’t personally
used these services, then most of us are likely to know someone who has at some point in their life; we just may not aware that we do. “This 5km walk is a way to support our fellow Kerry women, to raise funds for these much-needed resources, and a time to reconnect or get to know other women in a more relaxed, unhurried way,” Elin Sorensen, KBN’s Chairperson said.
The event is also a way of encouraging women to get out there and make the most of the beautiful county we live in while racking up a whole lot of healthy benefits. KBN helps women play a bigger, better, and more fulfilling role in their businesses and in society. Whether you’re an entrepreneur carving out your place in business, a corporate player on the fasttrack, women keen to get back into business after a career break or simply someone who sometimes feels you’re missing a connection somewhere – you’ll find your place with them. Tickets are €10 and are available on Eventbrite, Facebook, and kbn.ie.

HOLY WATER- A MEANS OF SPIRITUAL WEALTH Holy Water is a Sacramental that remits venial sin, because of the blessing attached to it. Holy Church strongly urges its use upon Her Children, especialy when dangers threaten, such as fire, storms, sickness and other calamities. Every Catholic home should have always in it a supply of Holy Water. We do not take advantage of the benefits derived from Holy Water. Let us cultivate its use. Untold Spiritual Wealth is concentrated in a tiny drop of blessed water and we give it so little thought. MM

Peter Keane’s title-chasing Kerry team got the better of Mayo – and Storm Jorge – last weekend as a blistering start helped them to an important one-point win in Elvery’s MacHale Park. A goal by Seánie O’Shea after 80 seconds set the tone for the first half and although Mayo fought back admirably in the second, the visitors held firm to collect all two points. The win leaves The Kingdom in second place in Division 1, one point behind leaders Galway and one ahead of Tyrone and Dublin heading into the final two rounds of fixtures. For Kerry, the mathematics are quite simple: beat Monaghan and Donegal and they’ll be back in Croke Park for the league decider at the end of this month. With all the talk of their leaky defence (the third leakiest in all divisions, to be exact) and, by and large, sub-par performances, another final appearance would be no mean feat at all.
WEATHER
Early concerns that the Mayo match would fall victim to the weather proved

Jorge fails to blow Kerry off course
Kingdom on track for league final after narrow win in stormy Mayo to be well founded and once again you would have to question the GAA’s decision to delay rescheduling the match for Sunday. Many Kerry fans had already hit the road by the time the call came and with a Red Weather warning in place for Clare and Galway on Saturday afternoon, the safety of supporters really should have been of paramount importance. The GAA can’t control the weather, but they can control how they respond to it. One would hope for a more logical approach in the future.

No turning back now KICKING OUT: Kerry goalkeeping coach Brendan Kealy says the GAA "are trying everything" to make keepers kick the ball out long. Pic: Séamus Healy.
Gaelic football goalkeepers are to be prohibited from receiving a backpass directly from a kickout after a contentious motion by the Raheens club in Kildare passed by just 2% at GAA Congress last Friday. The new rule will be in place for this year’s intercounty provincial and All-Ireland championships and it is also expected come into effect for clubs later this month. Reaction to the controversial rule change has been mixed. Those in favour, like Dublin manager Dessie Farrell, say it will speed up the game and help prevent teams from running down the clock. Others, such as Farrell’s Tyrone counterpart Mickey Harte, see it as more needless meddling on the part of the GAA. Speaking exclusively to the Killarney Advertiser this week, Kerry goalkeeping coach and Kilcummin No. 1 Brendan Kealy said he didn’t feel the backpass ban is necessary. “We all like to have a mix of kickouts in our locker,” the former Kerry keeper said. “[The backpass from a short kickout] is one that every goalkeeper and every team has used at times. You give it and if it’s not on for the defender to go himself, he turns back to the keeper. I don’t see what the problem is with that – I thought it was an enjoyable part of the game. I don’t think [the new rule] is necessary.” The 2015 All-Star, who won seven Munster titles and one All-Ireland with The Kingdom, also questioned the timing of the change. The new rule will come into effect a month from congress, despite not being trialled. “Bringing it in as club football is just getting underway and just before championship… I don’t know if that would happen in any other sport,” Kealy added. “Fundamental changes are made to rules and all of a sudden they’re brought in without any bedding in period. “You’d love to know who’s making these decisions and how closely connected they are to coaching and playing the game nowadays. Teams are
so fine-tuned now and preparation is so intricate, everything is down to the finest detail, and then you’ve got these people making decisions and things change overnight.” The new rule is just the latest in a string of modifications to the kickout and Kealy believes that the GAA only have one thing in mind. “They might as well just say that they want the goalkeepers kicking the ball long up the middle of the field, because they’ve been trying everything over the last few years to make that happen. They don’t want the keepers going short. “In my opinion, kickouts have never been as good in the game. There’s a variety of everything: lads are picking teammates short, they’re picking fellas long, they’re hitting runners in the pockets, they’re putting it up for contests. We’ve got the most variety and the best kickers there has ever been in the game. And they want to take all that away and just have keepers lumping it out 70 yards for contests.” Will it be tricky for current Kerry goalies Shane Ryan and Brian Kelly to adapt to the rule change midseason? “I don’t think it’ll be difficult, no,” their coach insisted. “It’s not like we were really working on doing this one-two type kickout short to the full back. It’s just something you need to be mindful of. Your instinct is to make yourself an option when you give a short kickout to a defender, just in case he gets bottled up, so you make an angle. “You’re not going to be able to do that now, but it’s not going to take a huge amount of getting used to. I don’t think it’s going to be hard for the lads.” For his part, Dr Crokes goalkeeper Shane Murphy has said that he’s okay with the new measure, although, like Kealy, he isn’t in favour of bringing in so many new rules. “I actually go long a lot anyway so I don’t think it’ll have a massive impact on me personally,” he said. “It’ll make the game faster and open things up a bit. But I do think that the GAA are trying too hard to make the game more appealing to viewers.”

BOUNCE: Dr Crokes midfielder Johnny Buckley in action against Kerins O'Rahilly's. Can Crokes bounce back from their first trophyless season in 16 years?
Around threequarters of those polled believe that Beaufort and John Mitchels will struggle to stay in the top flight of Kerry football.
Crokes tipped to regain County League crown | By Adam Moynihan
Readers of the Killarney Advertiser have predicted league success for Dr Crokes, Templenoe and Glenflesk in 2020 Last season was unusually barren for the Dr Crokes senior football team but they could be set for a return to winning ways in this year’s County League, according to a new poll carried out by the Killarney Advertiser. The survey, which was conducted online and drew interest from readers all over the county, tasked participants with predicting who would win and get relegated from Division 1 of the Kerry Senior Football League, as well as the three teams who would get promoted from Divisions 2 to 6. 37% of respondents tipped the Crokes to regain the Division 1 title they last won in 2018, with 17% predicting that current champions Austin Stacks will retain their crown. The Killarney Legion were the third-highest vote-getters on 13% while Kerins O’Rahilly’s and Dingle received around 10% each. In a departure from recent years, the
first placed team at the end of the season will win the competition outright as the league final has been scrapped for 2020. Looking at the other end of the table, around three-quarters of those polled believe that newly-promoted sides Beaufort and John Mitchels will struggle to stay in the top flight of Kerry football. Kilcummin (40%) may also be in trouble according to those surveyed with Spa and Kenmare Shamrocks (29% each) apparently next in line. As always, three teams will be relegated from Division 1 at the end of the year.
DIVISION 2
Despite enduring a difficult league campaign in 2019, which culminated in the forfeit of two fixtures due to a lack of numbers, Intermediate champions Templenoe are fancied by 60% of our readers to return to Division 1 at the first time of asking. The small South Kerry club were left shorthanded last time out due to the
unavailability of a number of Kerry stars at various grades but they have been tipped to fare better this year, with Glenbeigh/Glencar (53%) and All-Ireland Junior champions Na Gaeil (51%) also expected to contend for a top three finish. Over a third of those polled think that East Kerry club Gneeveguilla will earn a second consecutive promotion and join the big boys in Division 1 for the first time since 2013.
GLENFLESK
In Division 3, Glenflesk are seemingly huge favourites to go straight back up with almost three out of four of respondents singling them out as promotion candidates. The East Kerry side were backed by a whopping 73% of voters, more than any team in any division in the competition. A resurgent Laune Rangers (59%) could also be in line for a return to Division 2 along with Mid Kerry rivals Milltown/ Castlemaine (37%). St Senan’s and
Ardfert were both selected by 26% of those polled.
DIVISIONS 4-6
East Kerry neighbours Firies (68%) and Fossa (48%) were the most popular selections in Division 4 with Waterville (35%) and Castlegregory (34%) also expected to be there or thereabouts. St Michael’s-Foilmore (59%) and Cordal (54%) are the most fancied teams in Division 5 with four clubs – Ballyduff, Kilgarvan, Cromane and Austin Stacks B – tipped for promotion by roughly a third of those polled. Division 6 could be extremely tight according to our readers as Killarney Legion B (46%), Dr Crokes C (46%), Dingle B (45%) and Rathmore B (44%) all received a similar number of votes. Gneeveguilla B defeated Milltown/Castlemaine B in the only Kerry SFL match played last weekend. The league kicks off proper this Sunday with a full round of fixtures in each division.

Tricky away ties for Killarney clubs | By Adam Moynihan It’s a difficult start on paper for the Killarney clubs in Division 1 of the 2020 Kerry Senior Football League as Legion, Dr Crokes and Spa are all on the road for their Round 1 openers. East Kerry champions Legion will be hoping to fly out of the traps this season but they are likely to have their work cut out against An Ghaeltacht, who are always a difficult opponent at home in Gallarus. The return of accurate place-kicker David O’Sullivan, who was previously living in London, has boosted their chances. Dr Crokes are also heading west on Sunday as they take on Dingle in a repeat of the 2018 County Championship final. The four-in-a-row champions from 2015 to 2018 didn’t place too high of a priority on last year’s league as they tried to regroup after a gruelling All-Ireland Club campaign, but that’s likely to change this time around as they look to re-establish their stran-
glehold on Kerry senior football. Spa, who made bright starts in the league in each of the past two seasons, head to Boherbue in Round 1 to take on fellow Intermediate side John Mitchels. The newly-promoted Tralee side have been earmarked as potential relegation candidates so they will surely be placing a big emphasis on starting strongly. The Killarney men will need to be on their game to make sure that doesn’t happen. Near neighbours Kilcummin are also Tralee-bound this weekend as they travel to Strand Road to play Kerins O’Rahilly’s. The 2018 All-Ireland Intermediate champions did well to retain their senior club and Division 1 status last year and they will be keen to further establish themselves as a top club in 2020. In Division 2, Listry, under the stewardship of new manager Marc Ó Sé, have a tester of an away fixture against Templenoe, Dr Crokes B are away to St Mary’s and one of East Kerry’s up and coming teams, Gneeveguilla, are up against Desmonds in Castleisland.

C artell.ie Rally of the Lakes route announced
Killarney and District Motor Club have announced details of the Cartell.ie International Rally of the Lakes, which will take place May 1-3. The route includes stages close to Killarney such as Molls Gap, which will be used on both days, Beallaghbeama, Gortnagane and Rockfield, in addition to Kilsarkan, Quarry Cross, Lough Acoose and Bonard. | N agle chases historic fourth
win at West Cork Rally
Paul Nagle is bidding to become the most-successful co-driver in the history of the West Cork Rally after it was confirmed earlier this week that he and his driver Craig Breen will return to the famous rally to defend their 2019 title. The Kerry/Waterford pairing will compete on the March 14/15 Clonakilty-based event with support from the Hyundai Motorsport Customer Racing Team in what is likely to be their only Irish Tarmac Championship outing this year. Nagle has previously won the rally three times, twice alongside fellow Killarney
man Donie O’Sullivan, in 2004 and 2008, and again last year with Breen. He is one of three co-drivers to have won the event three times (Conor Foley in 2016, 2017 and 2018 and Jerry Hynes in 1995, 1997 and 1999 being the other two) but a fourth victory has never been achieved by any co-driver. |
L imerick Forest Rally rescheduled
Limerick Motor Club hope to reschedule its forestry rally for April 18 or 19. Sunday’s event was canned at the last minute after heavy overnight snow made the route impassable. The Limerick Forestry Rally uses roads on the Cork-Kerry-Limerick border near Brosna and includes sections of the Cordal Windfarm on Mount Eagle and roads previously used by the now discontinued Killarney Forestry Rally. Mallow-based Killarney co-driver Heather Switzer was the only local competitor affected by the cancellation. She was due to contest the event alongside Paul O’Connor in a Honda Civic. The Cork-Kerry team were second in class on the recent Carrick-on-Suir Forestry Rally.
Killarney and District Motor Club provided a team of marshals for the event but they were asked to stand down as a result of the ice-covered roads in the forests. The next event in the Irish Forestry Championship is the March 28 Moonraker Rally which is based just across the county bounds in Ballyvourney. |
I nternational entries for Circuit of Kerry
Next month’s Rose Hotel Circuit of Kerry will have an international feel to it as, already, there are several overseas drivers entered for the Tralee event. The rally is a round of three major championships: the Triton Showers National, the Top Part West Coast and the Moriarty’s Centra Kingdom of Kerry Championships. The early leader of the West Coast Championship is Welshman Steve Wood and he and his co-driver Keith Moriarty from Abbeyfeale have confirmed their participation in the rally. Dai Roberts, who made his Circuit of Kerry debut last year, is another Welshman advancing his plans to return to Tralee in April with Peugeot 205. He will be part of a two-car team
from South Wales. Rally legend Séamus Burke, a Donegal man based in Atlanta, has also placed an entry for the rally. No stranger to competing in Kerry, the Ford Escort driver has competed on the Rally of the Lakes and the Killarney Historic Rally in the past but this will mark his first appearance on the Circuit of Kerry. Former Irish Tarmac Rally champion John Coyne, who is currently based in California, will bring his unique Porsche 997 GT3 to the rally for the first time. |
N ational Rally Championship gets underway in Mayo
Kilcummin-based co-driver Damian Fleming is the only Kerry competitor listed to contest Sunday’s Mayo Rally. He is paired with his usual driver, Raymond Conlon, in a Toyota Corolla. The Castlebar-based event is the opening round of the Triton Showers National Rally Championship and the Sligo Pallets Border Rally Championship. The Monaghan/Kerry crew intend to tackle the latter championship this season.
Killarney girls BRIAN JAMES win big in Bruff Killarney Advertiser Fantasy Football League
MUNSTER GIRLS U14 CUP ___________________________________________________________________________________
Bruff RFC 24 | Killarney RFC 45 KILBALLYOWEN PARK A huge win in Bruff on Sunday last has left the Killarney RFC U14 girls in a strong position as they battle for a spot in the last four of the cup. Bruff away is not an enticing prospect for any team but once again the Killarney girls started well and it wasn’t long before they scored, much to the surprise of the partisan home crowd. In broken play, Killarney came under sustained pressure and it was only due to the work rate in defence that the floodgates didn’t open. The backline of Robyn, Bronagh, Niamh, Marina, Kate, Katie and Melissa had to work for the full 60 minutes, as did the forward set-up of Ella, Jasmine, Molly, Nell, Shauna, Clodagh, Joanne and Fia. Isabella came on for Kate to give Killarney a fresh pair of legs, which
were badly needed due to sustained periods of pressure. Killarney were two tries up at the break but Bruff fought back, scoring a brace of unanswered tries. All around the field, the girls threw themselves into the thick of it and it was the work ethic of the forwards getting in to help that won the day. The visitors went over for two crucial tries in the final four minutes to put the game out of sight and Bronagh kicked a very difficult conversion to seal a magnificent result. A word of special mention goes to Katie O’Donoghue who had an epic performance, to mascot and waterboy Donnacha, to Liam and Josh who were outstanding helping out, and to Mags, Norma, Rose, Anne, Paula, John, Ana, Jerome, Gary and Fiona.

X-LEAGUE: Des Foy (left) with fellow members of the local X-League team.
A league of their own The Killarney-based makers of X-League (pronounced ‘cross’), a limited contact version of rugby league, recently announced a partnership with the sport’s governing body in England. The deal will see international teams compete in a X-League World Cup, which will run alongside the Rugby League World Cup proper in 2021. But how did a sport with Killarney roots go global? Adam Moynihan spoke to the game’s creator, Des Foy, to find out. Hi Des. Thanks for speaking to me. No problem, Adam. Can you give me some background on your own career? I believe you played the game at the highest level. Yeah, I played rugby league from 1980 to ’93. Mostly for Oldham, which is my hometown club. I played for a couple of other clubs as well, Widnes and Huddersfield, and I had a spell in Australia with the Newcastle Knights. I also went on tour with Great Britain to New Zealand, Australia and Papua New Guinea in 1984. And how did you end up in this part of the world? Rugby league at the time was sort of semi-professional and most people had jobs as well. I worked for a water company for a few years and around the time I finished playing they were offering us either voluntary redundancy or to move to another office in another town. Me and my wife decided at the time that we’d take the money and run, and we
came over here. My wife’s actually from Sligo originally. She moved to England in her early teens and we met at school. We used to holiday in these parts quite a bit in the summer and we thought it would be a nice place to move. So we got the four kids and came over here in ’95. 25 years ago. So you’re an adopted son by this stage? I’d like to hope so, yeah! I’ve still got this accent that makes people think that I’ve probably just arrived. But yeah, I’ve lived here most of my adult life. Tell me about X-League. What is it? It’s a rugby league variant which is similar to touch rugby and tag rugby. The main difference is that the tackle is made by the defender touching the ball when it’s in the possession of the opposition. Because of that, it introduces a little bit more contact then you normally would get in touch and tag. It’s much closer to the full contact game. How did it come about initially? It sort of came about around 2002 when I did a bit of defensive coaching with Declan Kidney at Munster, and a little bit with Matt Williams at Leinster the season before. I was trying to get players to focus on attacking the ball in the tackle. The rugby league tackling style is different to rugby union. In rugby league, stopping the ball is the key thing when you tackle – if you tackle the legs, the ball might still get offloaded so the tackle isn’t complete. So I used it a bit with Munster and when my son was in UCC we were trying to get people to
play a bit of rugby league then. I’m not a big fan of drills so we wanted a game that enabled us to have the feel and timing of a real rugby league match, and also introduce this idea of the defenders focussing on the ball. That’s where X-League came from, really. You’ve been leading X-League sessions here in Killarney since 2014. Do the rules make it more inclusive than a full contact sport? That’s very much the case. Personally, I’m in my fifties now so I’m not going to be playing full contact sport of any description! So it has given an opportunity to people like me to keep playing. When we play in Fossa, we have female players, teenagers, lads in their twenties, lads in their thirties, lads in their forties, and then I’m usually the oldest guy! The reason we’ve pushed it more recently and we’ve changed the name (from EuroTag to X-League) and we’ve got the RFL in England interested is because it’s very inclusive. We came up with this game and it was to try and get people playing a version of rugby league, but we are very much now playing an inclusive version that enables lots of different people to take part. When you think of rugby, it tends to be men from 18 to 35 and that’s about it. But this is a sport that includes a wider demographic. You touched on that partnership with the RFL. How significant a step is that for X-League? I think it’s massive. First of all, they have a budget! They’ll get money out of Sport England over there and finding games
X-League, a Killarney-made variant of rugby league, is set for the international stage that are inclusive and draw people in who had previously gone away from the sport is important. They have a variants officer and he’s going to all the professional clubs to promote the different versions of rugby league. Hopefully we’ll get four or five of them on board this year and maybe more in the future. That’s the plan. And there’s a World Cup event on the cards? Yes, the RFL and the Rugby League World Cup organisation will support us in putting on a competition at the time of the full World Cup in October/November 2021. So we’re planning on doing an event in Sheffield and Doncaster where some of the group games are being played. Over in Warrington there will be a physical disabilities World Cup and up in Newcastle there will be a masters for over 35s. How many players are involved locally at the moment? We have around 30 people on our list and we send out the text every week to see who’s available. If we don’t get 10 – if it’s a bad night or people are unavailable – then we don’t play. But we don’t miss many weeks, even when the weather is bad. Of course, new players are always welcome to join us on Thursdays at 7pm in Fossa. It’s a very easy game to get involved in and we’ll be happy to show you the ropes. ___________________________________________________ If you’re interested in taking part in X-League, contact Des on 086 8622522.
