Fiona Hyde and Maura O’Boyle are among a number of local workers whose cars have been damaged over the past 18 months.
How Vandals Put €1000 Price Tag On Parking VANDALS targeting cars in Killarney have cost workers hundreds of euro in repairs, with one woman facing a hefty bill €1000 to address the damage. I met with distraught car owners whose vehicles have been repeatedly targeted over the past 18 months. All are working on New Street and have been using the St Mary’s Road/ St Mary’s Terrace area to park their cars during the day. They have returned to find their cars keyed, or in some cases, dog waste smeared over car door handles. It begs the question – if this is a designated parking area (and there are parking metres there) and cars are repeatedly damaged, should there be CCTV cameras there, as these car owners suggest? Fiona Hyde of the Pillbox Boutique said: “Many of
You’d have to work a long time to pay for the damage us formerly used the car park down in the Cathedral but if you are leaving work in the evening, it can be too dark to go down there on one’s own.” Fiona’s car bonnet and doors were deliberately scratched, as were those of several MacBee’s staff members, including Maura O’Boyle. “We did put euros in the parking
machines there at the start but the machines have not worked for some time so we stopped,” said Maura. “I have been parking here maybe two years or more and my bonnet was damaged 18 months ago. It was keyed, with €200 worth of damage caused. My driver’s door and back door were damaged and what they started before they finished on Friday, as my front panel and back panel were keyed. It will cost €1000 to repair. You would be working a long time to pay for this. It’s expensive parking.” The group has called for CCTV cameras to be erected in the area or for a “good Samaritan” to contact Gardaí. Describing the vandalism as “vindictive”, Maura added: “I’m definitely not coming here any more. Whoever has done it has won; it’s very sad.”
Improvement Works To Flesk Bridge SIGNIFICANT improvements to the Flesk Bridge on the Muckross Road in Killarney will take place over the coming months. As part of a €2m investment in the upgrading of 12 bridges around the county, the Flesk Bridge will undergo a major enhancement. Works to the bridge parapets, railing and road surface will be carried out and improvements will also be carried out to the footpath and cycle lane across the bridge. The works, which commence on Monday next and run until mid-December, will require a one-lane stop-go traffic system at the bridge to allow the works to be completed as quickly as possible. Motorists are asked to drive with care on the Muckross Road while this enhancement is carried out. The work on this important tourist route is being carried out during the off-peak season to minimise disruption. The investment, with the support of Transport Infrastructure Ireland, represents an important enhancement to this well-known bridge.
Second All-Ireland Win For Golfers CONGRATULATIONS to the ladies team at Killarney Golf & Fishing Club who have claimed their second All-Ireland title in just over a month in the AIG Senior Foursomes Final. The finals of the Ladies AIG Cups and Shields took place at Malone Golf Club, Belfast. The club’s senior foursomes team defeated Lurgan in Thursday’s semi-final and went on to meet Roscommon in the final on Friday. The final proved to be a nail-biting encounter with the overall result coming down to the final match. Play had to be suspended on Friday due to darkness, with the final match against Ro-
scommon involving the pairing of Eimear O’Donnell and Amy Arthur, undecided after 20 holes. Play resumed at 10am on Saturday morning and the team were crowned the winners after Eimear O’Donnell holed a five-footer for par on the 21st hole to give them the All-Ireland title,” said Cormac Flannery, general manager of Killarney Golf & Fishing Club. “This has been a momentous year for the club with two ladies senior teams winning All-Ireland titles. “In August, the club’s senior cup team won the All-Ireland for the first time in the club’s history and now we have our senior foursomes team winning another All-Ireland title.”

Colm Opens A New Chapter
WHEN Colm Cooper retired from inter-county football this year, he left behind a remarkable legacy. From a family steeped in Gaelic football, and a core member of the Dr Crokes team, Colm was still in his teens when he first played for Kerry at senior level. Broadcaster Michael Lyster was MC at the launch of Colm’s book Gooch: The Autobiography in The Glenealge yesterday evening. Overcoming struggles with injury and personal tragedy, Cooper became one of the GAA’s most recognis-
able and best-loved figures at a time of tumultuous change in the game. But the man known nationally as ‘Gooch’ is also an intensely private figure who has never courted publicity and his personal story remains largely untold. Now Gooch – The Autobiography unlocks a previously unopened door, tracing a compelling path through the life beyond the headlines. This is the story of an ordinary man who became an extraordinary footballer.
Late Late Show Appearance COLM COOPER will appear on tonight’s Late Late Show. The Kerry football legend will also be chatting about his hugely successful football career, during which he won five All-Ireland titles.
News Briefs ... Autumn Talks
THE Garden Room at Killarney House is the venue for the Autumn Talks Series 2017. The talks commenced last night, with award-winning Killarney photographer Valerie O’Sullivan giving a presentation entitled People and Places of County Kerry. The talks take place on Thursday nights, commencing at 8pm, and admission is free. The Innisfallen Crosier – A National Treasure from Ireland’s Golden Age is the title of a talk by Griffin Murray on October 26, while on November 2, proactive tree management will be the topic, covered by Michael Garry. The reintroduction of the white-tailed see eagles to Ireland will be the subject of the talk on November 9, by Dr Allan Mee.
Dangerous Jellyfish Warning Colm Cooper with his brother Vince Cooper, Helen, Cian and Aoife Cooper at the launch of his autobiography. Former Kerry footballer Colm Cooper with Paudie and Jack O’Leary, Glenflesk.
BEACHGOERS and swimmers have been warned to beware of potentially dangerous jellyfish. The potentially dangerous Portuguese ‘Man of War’ jellyfish were spotted on Fenit Island on Thursday. The sting of these jellyfish, which are very light in colour, is very potent and if you are stung you should be treated immediately. Experts also warn the public not to touch their tentacles and to keep children and animals well away from them.

Surge Of Support For Fundraiser For Injured Teen GAA CLUBS and other sporting organisations on both sides of the Kerry/Cork border are joining forces to help a teenager who sustained serious injuries in a bicycle accident and his family. Ian O’Connell, aged 16, of Pinewood Estate, Killarney, suffered damage to his neck and spine after falling from his bike in the Muckross area of Killarney National Park, on August 16 last. He is currently being treated in Dublin’s Mater Hospital. The St Brendan’s College student is a juvenile footballer with Spa GAA club, a hurler with Dr Crokes and also plays with Killarney Celtic soccer club. Spa GAA Club has organised a special lotto fundraiser, the Ian O’Connell Benefit Fund, for Ian and his family and offers of support are pouring in. The lotto draw will take place at the Torc Hotel, Killarney, on Sunday, October 15, with a jackpot prize of €2000. Ian’s father, Mike, is a native of Boherbue, Co Cork, and the Boherbue club is also foregoing its regular weekly lotto and holding a special lotto
instead to aid the fund. The chairman of the Spa fundraising committee, James Gleeson, said they were ‘’absolutely stunned’’ at the level of support being received from several sporting organisations and the general public. It is understood Ian faces a lengthy period of treatment and rehabilitation to regain mobility. The lotto tickets are already on sale and any individuals, or clubs, willing to sell tickets are asked to contact the Spa club which will arrange for delivery. Tickets cost €5 each. Also, a bank account has been set up at AIB, Main St, Killarney, to receive donations: Account Name: Ian O’Connell Fund; Account Number: 64056025; Sort Code: 936332; BIC: AIBKIE2D; IBAN: IE24AIBK93633264056025. A GoFund Me page is also being set up. All money raised will go directly to Ian and his family. The Spa club is hoping other sports clubs and members of the community will help sell tickets or contribute towards the fundraising drive.
Funding
First Citizens Welcome Town & Village Windfall THE Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr John Sheahan, has welcomed the announcement of over €868,000 in funding for Kerry under the Town and Village Renewal Scheme. The funding from the Department of Rural and Community Development will allow for the revitalisation of many towns and villages across the county. “This is great news for Kerry and is a very welcome investment in community, enterprise, infrastructure and social facilities in the county. In all, 13 projects in towns and villages have been approved for investment which will greatly enhance those areas,” said Cllr Sheahan. Killarney’s first citizen, Councillor Niall Kelleher, who is a native of Rathmore, also welcomed the funding, and highlighted the €100,000 al-
located to Rathmore. “These funds are a first step in the improvement of our community,” he said. The chief executive of Kerry County Council, Moira Murrell, said that through the Community Support Fund of 2017, the council has been in position to leverage and secure co-funding from other schemes such as the Town and Village Renewal Scheme. “The council’s adopted budget for 2017 – and the Community Support Fund – are focused on securing co-funding for projects of economic importance in the county and the type of objectives identified in the Local Economic and Community Plan. This funding will help to drive the revitalisation of many of our towns and villages across the county,” she said.

Retirement
HE HAS been to the fore in safeguarding communities for three and a half decades and Detective Garda Bill Stack received many tributes as he retired during the week. Detective Garda Stack was surrounded by friends and colleagues at Killarney Garda Station on Friday as he signed off duty after 35 years of service with An Garda Síochána. He served in Dublin prior to arriving in Killarney. In 1999 he moved from operational uniform duties to drug enforcement. In 2001 he was appointed a Detective Garda and has been central to many investigations in Kerry and Killarney, from burglary to fraud to high-profile murder probes. Originally from Abbeyfeale, he is married to Mary and they have four grown-up children.

YOU still have time to perfect your swing in advance of the Killarney Legion GAA Club annual golf classic. Tee-time is at 9am and 1.30pm on Friday, October 13, at Mahony’s Point, Killarney Golf & Fishing Club. “With over 16 teams, including boys and girls, the upkeep of the pitches and training areas is a challenge and it is vitally important to give our members the best possible coaching and training,” said Killarney Legion
BRIGHT and early on Saturday morning, the team from Daly’s SuperValu exchanged the supermarket aisles for the football pitch as they caught up with local GAA clubs to see at first hand the huge work being done at grassroots level. Representatives from Daly’s SuperValu attended training sessions at Killarney Legion GAA Club at Direen and Dr Crokes GAA Club at Lewis Road to present 50 footballs to the juvenile teams. “This is part of SuperValu’s #Behindtheball GAA campaign which aims to encourage kids as young as six to play football and exercise regularly,” said Denis Tucker, duty manager, Daly’s SuperValu. Eight other local GAA teams will also receive the set of footballs, Kilcummin, Rathmore, Fossa, Glenflesk, Spa, Gneeveguilla, Firies and Beaufort. “The campaign is all about inspiring and supporting the future stars of all GAA clubs,” said Denis. “All of us from Daly’s SuperValu were impressed by the great work been done by all the coaches and volunteers who look after the youngsters so well.”

We are grateful too to Micheal O’Donoghue of the Killarney Avenue Hotel who has been a loyal sponsor of our classic for many years.” Anyone interested in playing and supporting the club can contact coordinator Sean Murphy.

Best-In-Class
Top Marks For Credit Union KILLARNEY CREDIT UNION was this week praised for offering best-in-class services for its 25,000 members. Killarney Credit Union joins 270 other credit unions across the Republic of Ireland in topping the 2017 CXi Ireland Customer Experience League Table for the third year in a row. The annual survey, carried out by Amárach Research for CXi, asks consumers to rate their experiences of 170 brands across 10 different sectors. Over 42,000 customer experiences were evaluated and credit un-
ions again emerged as the overall winners, being rated highest for integrity, empathy and for the commitment of their staff. They were also singled out for the powerful bond forged with members - and the fact that the relationship with members was built completely on trust. The CXi said credit unions were “the perfect example” of organisations that “genuinely care” about their members. The report also said that trust is a hugely important factor in the rankings, and that credit unions are one of Ireland’s “most trusted brands”.

From The Couch To The Jungle TAKE it from me – their shrieks of laughter ricocheted around Park Place and down along High Street when we hosted I’m A Celeb…Get Me Out of Here! contestants Ruth Allen and Marguerite Harty in our Chatroom this week! These two ladies were fabulous fun and we know you will enjoy their banter every bit as much as we did. Tune into The Chatroom tonight on our Facebook page or website, killarneyadvertiser.ie, at 9pm to see what unfolded when they grilled each other on their up-and-coming foray into the
jungle as part of Killarney’s I’m A Celeb contest. Ruth, of Kerry Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Centre, and Marguerite, of Sheahan’s Centra, Muckross Road, are taking part in the event which will be hosted in the INEC on October 26 in aid of the Stephen Lyne Foundation and Kerry Stars Special Olympics Club. As a taster, the girls give an insight into whether they would prefer being locked in a coffin to eating a whole plate of creepy crawlies; or whether they see themselves more as a Tarzan or Jungle Book character.

Spotlight on Future Sounds TO QUOTE a man who has been at the coalface of the music scene in Ireland from the very beginning Donal Dineen recently said: “I strongly believe that we are living in a golden age of music in Ireland There is a new generation of people making sounds that are widening our horizons inexorably.” This is most certainly true. But many of these amazing artists are almost completely ignored by the mainstream media in Ireland right now. The INEC wanted to do something help showcase these artists outside the main urban centres of the country. Future Sounds is that showcase. The first Future Sounds event in February featured acts as far apart genre wise as The Little Hours and King Kong Company on the same bill. Future Sounds 2018 will run over one day next March across multiple venues. But organisers felt that Future Sounds could be more than a oncea-year phenomenon. So, this October Bank holiday Sunday, October 29, a Future Sounds Spotlight event will unfold in The INEC Acoustic Club. Artists as diverse as Dublin-born, London-based singer/songwriter Sample
Answer will be joined on a bill with alternative rock instrumental band Overhead The Albatross. The bill will be finished out by two top young electronic music producers Daithi from Galway and DJ Kormac who will bring his AV interactive show to close the event. The production will feature a new state-of-the-art lighting rig as well as projection screens and large PA. Longer term we at the INEC believe that Future Sounds can be grown into a locally interactive platform; see https://inec.ie/festival/future-sounds/main-stage/

KERRY COUNTY COUNCIL was urged to consider putting a second lane for traffic form Ballydowney to Lidl. Raising the matter at the recent meeting of Killarney Municipal District, Councillor Maura Healy-Rae said: “Residents and visitors alike are having huge issues” with traffic on a daily basis.” Kerry County Council responded that it would examine traffic volumes between the Ballydowney roundabout and the Cleeny roundabout to establish if intervention is required at this location. “Intervention is vital because this area is blocked with heavy traffic at numerous times of the day,” said Cllr Healy-Rae.

They were of course inspired by their encounters with some of the world’s top travel bloggers and writers – over 600 of whom converged on Killarney to attend TBEX Europe. This conference attracted the largest gathering of travel content creators and social media influencers in Europe. All ages and every continent in the world were represented as an eager audience filed into the INEC on Wednesday morning for the keynote speeches. These were people who literally gave up the day job to follow their dreams. As Gary Arndt, of award-winning Everything-Everywhere. com, told the spellbound gathering: “I’d rather beg on the streets than have a normal, 9-5 job!” Gary has been travelling the world non-stop for over half a decade and has visited over 100 countries and territories in that time. He is one of an influential group with a combined reach of 380 million travel fans. Gleneagle Group MD and Irish Hotels Federation Kerry Branch Chairman Patrick O’Donoghue was among the enthusiastic local attendees and noted the importance of the event. As well as sampling all that Killarney and Kerry had to offer, the delegates were treated to a night out at Killarney Racecourse on Tuesday evening and a wrap party in JM Reidy’s, Main Street, last night. TBex in Numbers ...
Since its inception in 2009 TBEX has grown into the world’s largest travel community, with conferences held annually in North America, Europe, and Asia Pacific. In 2016, TBEX events across the globe reached over 358 million travel consumers worldwide.
IT’S 1957, the space race has begun, the showband era is in full swing, The Everly Brothers’ Wake Up Little Susie is all over the airwaves and a small country house hotel has just opened its doors in Killarney. The Gleneagle Hotel officially turns 60 this month and to celebrate the hotel is hosting a dinner dance on Saturday, October 14. The evening will commence with a threecourse gala banquet in the legendary Gleneagle Ballroom followed by a nostalgic step back in time with dancing to The Legends of The Cork Showband with special guest Sandy Kelly. The Gleneagle Hotel was originally known
as Flesk House. It was an eight-bedroom Georgian building constructed in the 1830s as a private home for one of the Herberts of Cahernane. It later became the stately home of Lord Headley. The house was first opened as a hotel by Eustace McMorough-Bernard, a member of a famous Killarney family, and later passed into the hands of Mr William Gilmore who also ran a thriving hotel. The house then reverted to the role of a private residence when bought by Archie Graham. Flesk House was purchased by Paddy and Sheila O’Donoghue in 1957 and on October 11, 1957, The Gleneagle was registered as a licensed hotel. Tickets, €35 per person, are available by phoning 064-6671550.

‘Most Beautiful Girl In The World’ Thylane Blondeau stole the hearts of the nation as the most beautiful girl at the tender age of six. Thylane was first catapulted into the limelight after her cover for Vogue Enfants captivated readers across the globe, with many hailing her the ‘most beautiful girl in the world’. Thylane showed off why she holds the beauty crown when she stormed the L’Oreal Paris show catwalk during Paris Fashion Week in France on Sunday.
L’Oréal Paris Takes Over The Champs-Élysées Beauty giant L’Oréal Paris had taken over the iconic shopping promenade The Champs-Élysées for a one-of-a-kind fashion show with some of the biggest industry names in the business. Backstage buzzed as top model after top model strolled in for another day at the office, which, in the end, would be unlike any runway before. This particular show required the models to walk down an extremely long runway, in front of a 600-person seated crowd and thousands of public spectators. In the thick of Paris Fashion Week, this proved to be a daunting task, even for the most seasoned of models. Famous faces like Doutzen Kroes, Soo Joo Park, Helen Mirren and Jane Fonda all walked the runway in high fashion looks from designers like Off-White and Balmain, paired with over 70 hair and makeup looks from L’Oréal Paris’s global make-up director Val Garland and L’Oréal Paris hair artists Stéphane Lancien. Both cast and crowd went crazy for the age-defiant Jane Fonda as she closed the show in a skin tight Balmain gown from the Fall/Winter 2017 collection.

BUDGET 2018
POTENTIAL EFFECT ON TRANSFERS/ SUCCESSION PLANNING With Budget 2018 less than one week away it is timely to consider the main headline taxes which can have potential impact on the transfer of properties or indeed succession planning. When considering whether to purchase property, to sell property and transfer a site or a farm to a loved one or indeed when considering dealing with ones affairs by way of Will or Succession Planning, these headline taxes all fall to be considered. Therefore, when the Minister for Finance announces Budget 2018, any potential announcements will have to be closely reviewed and considered. Stamp Duty is a tax which is payable in the conveyance of a property or indeed shares. The current headline rates are 1% with residential property, up to €1million and at 2% of a non-residential property. There are some reliefs available, in particular the Young Trained Farmers who can adhere to certain criteria. Any changes on Budget day will have to be closely reviewed. CAT or Capital Acquisitions Tax or Gift Tax or Inheritance Tax, as is otherwise known, is the tax which is payable on certain Gifts or Inheritances. The tax becomes payable once certain thresholds are exceeded by the beneficiary. The thresholds at present are split into three categories A, B and C which are dependent upon the relation between
the beneficiary and the person making the Gift. Whether there are any increases in these thresholds will have to be reviewed on Budget day. The Tax itself again has a base rate and any amendment to this base rate will also have to be closely monitored. There are numerous reliefs which are potentially available in respect of certain Gifts which include but are not limited to Agricultural Relief which deals with the transfer of Gifts of agricultural property, Business Relief which is a similar type of Relief in respect of the transfer of certain business assets, Favourite Nephew/Niece Relief and Dwelling House Relief. All of the reliefs have strict criteria and any amendments to the terms and conditions will also have to be reviewed. Capital Gains Taxes is tax payable on the sale of property or in the Gift of property to a third party. Again, this tax is payable on a base rate and any amendments to same will have to be closely reviewed. Again, there are numerous reliefs which are available including but not limited to the sale of ones Principal Private Residence and certain Retirement Reliefs, all of which again are governed by strict criteria. Any amendments again would deserve attention. Any potential transfers or sales and previous succession plans should be reviewed in the context of any amendments made on Budget day.

David & Aidan Swap Pitch For Catwalk
TWO legends of Kerry GAA, Aidan O’Mahony and David Clifford will be doing a star turn on the catwalk in Fossa this Tuesday, October 10. Dedicated followers of fashion will be hotfooting it to the five-star Europe Hotel & Resort for the 28th annual Fossa Fashion Show, which takes place at 8pm. Always an excellent fundraiser for a variety of organisations in the parish, it is organised by a team including husband and wife James and Claire Houlihan and Tim Kissane, who have been involved in the event since its beginning. James and Tim came up with the idea when they were youth leaders in Fossa Youth Club. “The first fashion show took place in the old church in Fossa and the funds raised that year were for the youth club,” said James. Subsequent fashion show benefited the new church, local historical society, community centre, playschool, new school and new community centre. Expect to see the latest fashion from Dunnes Stores, MacBee’s, Weardrobe, Scarlett, Jasmine, The Pillbox, Fashion World/Joi Boutique, Ela Maria and Brian James. The Self Assessment
Tax Deadline
for Pension Contributions is Looming! Planning for your financial future will give you peace of mind today. This week, our Expert Retirement Planning Adviser, Denis Murphy, Premier Financial Services, discusses the characteristics the Self Assessment Tax Deadline for Pensions.
Tax Deadline - 31st October 2017 Or 14th November 2017 (for those Filing Online)
Although, like all dates, it comes around each and every year, this one can throw up more than its fair share of complications on an annual basis. What is the purpose of the deadline date? Tuesday 14th November is the final date for making a pension contribution, and opting to backdate it for income tax relief purposes to 2016. (The date is 31st October for individuals who do not both pay and file their returns on line) Self Employed Taxpayers. For self-employed clients, making the pension contribution prior to the tax deadline, should ensure they will pay less income tax now, as the pension contribution can reduce not only their final income tax liability for 2016, but also their preliminary income tax bill for 2017, which is also due. The reduction in preliminary income tax defers that element of income tax until 2018. PAYE Taxpayers. In the case of PAYE clients, it can mean physically receiving a tax rebate from the Revenue, as all income tax would have already been paid in full for 2016 via the PAYE system. For backdating Additional Voluntary Contributions (AVCs), individuals must still be in the same pensionable employment as they were in 2016. If they have changed jobs since 2016 backdating an AVC contribution will not be possible. Similarly, if a client retired from pensionable employment in 2016, it will not be possible to backdate an AVC at this juncture. In contrast, clients who left or retired from nonpensionable employment in 2016 could make a Personal Pension or PRSA contribution and apply for income tax relief against their 2016 non-pensionable relevant earnings. It’s important to note that even if an individual has finalised their liability for last year and is in receipt of a final balancing statement from the Revenue, their tax affairs for 2016 can always be re-opened with a backdated pension contribution.

A Weekly Round-Up Of News + Views From Kerry And Around
Former Taoiseach And Fine Gael Leader Dies FORMER taoiseach and Fine Gael leader Liam Cosgrave has died aged 97. Mr Cosgrave led the Fine Gael-Labour coalition Government which ended 16 years of Fianna Fáil domination in 1973. However, its unexpected defeat four years later brought his own political career to a premature end. He stood down with an enhanced reputation, however, for personal integrity and for the firmness with which he guided the national coalition through a difficult period. President Michael D Higgins led tributes to the former taoiseach and Fine Gael leader, saying: “Among his most memorable achievements was that as Minister for External Affairs, when Ireland’s entry into the United Nations in 1955 was secured, and
during which time Liam Cosgrave gave shape to Ireland’s independent voice on the global stage.” Mr Cosgrave will also be remembered for how he wrong-footed his Cabinet colleagues by concealing his intention to vote against the Bill to legalise the import and sale of artificial contraceptives. The Bill, to implement a Supreme Court judgment, had been approved by the Cabinet but with the proviso that a free vote would be allowed in the Dáil. Cosgrave was thus entitled to vote against the Bill, which limited the sale of contraceptives to married couples and on prescription only, but his action according to the then minister for foreign affairs, Garret FitzGerald, “damaged the standing of the Government”.
Tories Hit The Wrong Note With Calvin & Florence CALVIN HARRIS and Florence Welch have lashed out at the British Conservative Party for using their music without permission during the party’s annual conference in Manchester this week. Calvin Harris found out that his track “This Is What You Came For” was used at the event and he was not impressed. He took to Twitter
to share his disapproval about such a happy song being “played at such a sad event”. Florence Welch also commented on the fact that Florence And The Machine’s hit “You Got The Love” was used at the conference. She wrote that the party’s usage of the song was not approved by the band, nor would it have been if they had asked.
Trump Corner
Rex Doesn’t Deny Calling Trump A ‘Moron’ IT’S become a bit like a fly-on-thewall documentary showcasing a family at war, with all the infighting and name-calling that entails. The Trump administration has been dogged by resignations and scandals like no other administration in modern US history and the report involving the US secretary of state is the latest in a series of unbecoming tussles. Rex Tillerson has denied he has considered resignation and pledged loyalty to Donald Trump in the wake of a report that he had called the president a “moron”. In a press appearance on Wednesday, he said: “There has never been a consideration in my mind to leave. I serve at the appointment of the president and I’m here as long as the president thinks I can be useful to achieving his objectives.” But he did not deny the report on NBC News on Wednesday morning that he had derided Trump as a “moron” in a meeting
Never fails to entertain
of White House national security officials and members of the cabinet. “He loves his country. He puts America and Americans first. He’s smart. He demands results wherever he goes and he holds those around him accountable for whether they have done the job he has asked him to do,” Tillerson said. CNN also reported that he had called Trump a moron and that Trump had been made aware of it. The secretary of state said he had not talked to the president on Wednesday morning before making his statement, saying Trump was on his way to Las Vegas. But the president was clearly watching Tillerson, tweeting within a few minutes. “The NBCNews story has just been totally refuted by Sec Tillerson and VP Pence. It is #FakeNews. They should issue an apology to AMERICA!” Trump wrote. After Tillerson’s statement, a NBC correspondent put out a tweet quoting MSNBC anchorwoman Stephanie Ruhle as saying: “My source didn’t just say he called him a moron. He said he called him an f-ing moron.”
Ana O’Brien Eyeing New Year Return JOCKEY Ana O’Brien admits it could be the new year before she returns to the saddle as she continues her recovery after her fall in Killarney. The rider suffered multiple injuries in a fall in July, fracturing the C1 vertebra in her neck and T6 in her back as well as damaging her eye socket, jaw and teeth. While O’Brien says she is making good progress, she has yet to pencil in a return date. She
told a Horse Racing Ireland blog: “I’ve quizzed the doctors about getting back on a horse. They are not as keen as I am for the moment! Hopefully, the neck brace will be coming off next week. “I’m doing my best to do as the doctors tell me so that everything mends properly, but as soon as I get the all-clear, I can’t wait to get back riding out. “However, it might be the new year before I get back in the saddle.”
Boris Rebuked Over ‘Dead Bodies’ Comment DOWNING STREET has rebuked Boris Johnson for saying a war-torn Libyan city only had to “clear the dead bodies away” to become a worldclass tourist destination, after Theresa May faced calls from her own MPs to sack him. A senior Downing Street source said it was a matter for Johnson as to whether he apologised, but added: “We did not feel it was an appropriate choice of words.”

Wettest September Since 2006 PARTS of Kerry recorded their wettest September since 2006, according to Met Éireann’s weather summary for last month. Valentia Observatory recorded a monthly rainfall of 204.4mm in September compared to just 70.5mm at Casement Aerodrome, Co Dublin. Monthly rainfall totals were above average at most weather stations with the month’s wettest day also recorded at Valentia Observatory with 39.8mm on the September 2nd. The number of rain days ranged from 20 days at
Dublin Airport to 27 days at Belmullet, Co Mayo. “The cool and unsettled theme continued for September 2017 from the summer months,” Met Éireann said. It said the first half of the month was “very changeable” as Atlantic frontal systems brought rain on many of the days, alternating with occasional blustery and showery intervals. “The latter part of the month was changeable once again with fronts bringing some heavy spells of rain - especially on the 27th, though there were some dry days with warm sunshine,” it added.
Ex-FBI Agent Investigates Betrayal Of Anne Frank A NEW investigation is hoping to use big data and modern police methods to finally discover who betrayed Anne Frank, according to Sky News during the week. The young Jewish girl’s diary, written while she was in hiding with her family in Amsterdam, has sold millions of copies worldwide. But to this day it remains unclear how Nazi occupation police discovered the Frank family – and whether they were betrayed or discovered by accident.
The new investigation will be led by former FBI agent Vincent Pankoke, who described it as “the ultimate cold case”. He said: “Seventy-three years after the arrest, forget forensic evidence, most of the people who could give witness statements are no longer alive.” Instead, the team will compile a master database of information that they hope will shed new light on the case.
Tributes Paid To Condé Nast Owner
HIS magazine empire influenced American and global culture, fashion and social taste for decades and tributes have flowed across the world following the death of SI Newhouse Jr, on Sunday at his home in Manhattan. Mr Newhouse, who was 89, was hailed for turning Condé Nast into a magazine powerhouse. As the owner of such titles as The New Yorker, Vogue and Vanity
Fair, Mr Newhouse hired some of the most charismatic magazine editors of the late 20th century, such as Vanity Fair’s Tina Brown and Graydon Carter and Vogue’s Diana Vreeland and Anna Wintour. Mr Newhouse, known as Si, and his younger brother, Donald, inherited an impressive publishing empire from their father, Samuel I. Newhouse, and built it into one of the largest privately held fortunes in the United States.

Welcome Progress On Macroom Bypass THE contract for the N22 road development scheme has gone out to public tender. Not before time, as this will be a major and welcome step in the development of the much-needed Macroom Bypass. The contracting authority Cork County Council has published details of the 22km upgrade to the main Kerry-Cork route. Exactly how many years have we been waiting for this? I remember sitting in traffic in the early 1990s, little imagining that pretty much nothing would have changed more than a quarter of a century on! Half of the new boundary fencing has already been completed and fencing of the
entire roadworks site will be finished by the end of this year. Welcoming the development were local politicians, including Kerry Independent TD Danny Healy-Rae who described it as “good news for the people of Kerry”; his brother, Deputy Michael Healy-Rae, and Minister Brendan Griffin. Requirements of the N22 Baile Bhúirne to Macroom Road Development tender published include the construction of a dual carriageway and interchanges. The tender signals that works are to be carried out close to environmentally sensitive sites, areas of special conservation and sites of historical and cultural significance.

Moments in Time
Brexit Rains On Hoteliers’ Parade
THE uncertainty around Brexit poses a real threat to the tourism industry, with regional tourism likely to be hit hardest. Tourism currently supports 11,000 jobs in Kerry and contributes some €508m to the local economy annually. Many of the consequences of Brexit are largely outside our control, so it is imperative that we mitigate the risks and potential damage where we can. We are calling on the Government to take the necessary steps to protect Irish tourism and to avoid any changes in policy that would weaken our sector’s ability to deal with the risks it faces due to Brexit. The 9% VAT rate for tourism, in particular, continues to deliver enor-
mous benefits to the exchequer by making us more attractive as a tourism destination. The overall rate of tourism growth is also continuing to slowdown, which is worrying. The cuts to marketing funding and development in the recessionary years should also be reversed urgently so we can entice more visitors from new and existing markets and particularly to the regions. Time and time again, Irish tourism has shown itself to be an excellent investment for every euro spent in destination marketing. Patrick O’Donoghue, Chair, Kerry Branch Irish Hotels Federation

Making The Most Of College Open Days College open days are an ideal way for prospective students and parents to visit the campus, says career guidance counsellor Niamh Dwyer COLLEGE open days give you the chance to attend information talks and meet with college staff and students of the various courses. Many of the open days, which are aimed at sixth-year students, are scheduled from October to December so it is important not to miss out on colleges of specific interest. Research and planning are key to getting the maximum benefit from your visit to college open days. Your time is precious as an exam student therefore you need to ensure that the visit is an efficient and effective use of your time. Look up the dates on the college websites or for a complete list log on to www.qualifax.ie/ events. To get the best out of open days you need to plan ahead:
THE council has recently removed the litter or “bruascar” bins from outside St Mary’s Cathedral on Cathedral Place and just around the corner on New Street (beside the postbox in the wall), which is causing littering due to the lack of bins. This is a retrograde penny-pinching step and it is putting
Look up the college website and download the timetable for the day. Mark the talks you want to attend. Ensure you allow plenty time to get to a couple of talks if you are interested in different courses. Print off a map of the college campus. Keep an open mind to looking at courses that you haven’t considered before, you may come across one that really interests you. Get there early; open days tend to be very busy! Many colleges now hold their open days on a Friday and a Saturday so you may not have to miss a day at school to attend. • Niamh Dwyer is a guidance counsellor in Scoil Phobail Sliabh Luachra, and PRO of the Kerry Branch of Guidance Counsellors; email her at careerfocusnow@gmail.com
Barriers To Stepping Onto Property Ladder A REDUCTION of zoning in Killarney would not only negatively impact the housing crisis but would increase the value of land – resulting in a further barrier for people trying to get on the property ladder. At the recent meeting of Killarney Municipal District, I asked Kerry County Council when the Draft Local Area Plan would be completed. This was meant to be on public consultation during the month of July but clearly has been delayed. Kerry County Council acknowledged there had been a delay and replied: “There is a requirement to review the existing quantum of land use zonings in Killarney Town in order to comply
with the CORE strategy of the current County Development Plan 2015-2021. Kerry County Council is in communication with the Department...once this has been addressed, the statutory process will commence.” I also highlighted the fact that a reduction of zoning in Killarney would not only negatively impact the housing crisis, but would increase the value of land and increase the cost of purchasing houses which is already a barrier for people trying to get on the property ladder. Councillor Maura Healy-Rae, Kilgarvan, Co Kerry

Reviewed: Five Parks by Ross McGuinness AFTER breaking off her engagement with Michael, Suzanne is still looking for The One. Bored with her freelancing job, she decides to take matters of both work and love into her own hands and Five Parks is born. She starts a blog, offering five prospective suitors a chance of one of five dates in five London parks. Suzanne’s blog goes viral, amassing a
huge following and even getting a column in a daily newspaper. But after the fifth date – which she has no memory of – Suzanne wakes up shackled to a bed in a windowless room. The only items with her are a table, a chair and a laptop. And an instruction from her captor: Keep writing. Billed as a thriller for the digital age, Five Parks is by London-based journalist Ross McGuinness.

Desk To Dancefloor WE HAVE it sussed when it comes to dazzling in party-perfect makeup! We got tips from the top in the form of makeup maestro Bobbi Brown. The best canvas is of course your natural complexion and Bobbi advises you to begin by gently smoothing on moisturiser to soften and refresh your skin. Next, use a concealer brush to apply corrector and then concealer under the eye area and use fingers to pat and blend both products into the skin. They’ll help conceal any darkness and brighten up your face. Finally, use foundation that matches skin exactly to even out
areas where skin is red or uneven. Using a brush, apply eyeshadow all over the lid. Then, with a cream shadow brush, apply a creaseproof eyeshadow, such as Bobbi Brown Sand Dollar Long-Wear Cream Shadow, onto the lower lid up to the crease. Use an ultra-fine eyeliner brush to make eyes stand out with Bobbi Black Ink Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner. For long-lasting, romantic lashes that won’t smear or fade brush two coats of Bobbi Brown Black
No Smudge Mascara on the lashes. For a pretty glow use two shades of blush–a neutral and a brighter “pop” shade. Smile and apply onto cheeks. Blend the colour upward towards the hairline and then downward to keep colour light and blended. For a final touch, dab a pop of pale pink blush onto the apples of the cheeks. Powder blush is long-lasting, but we also love cream varieties. The Bobbi Brown Pot Rouges are just the ticket and also ideal for saving space in that teeny tiny party clutch bag as you can use them for both lips and cheeks!
Fun Festive Options YOUR Christmas party – whether with your colleagues, friends or family – can take many forms. Why not try a few different fun options for size? If it’s a girlie affair, then a festive afternoon tea should fit the bill.
Also along the feelgood line is a spa day, which should go well with bon viveurs of all ages. This might be combined with a fabulous Yuletide lunch. You could also combine your celebration with a day of activity – check out sporting or
other fun options available locally. You will find you are spoilt for choice. Finally, you don’t have to stray from home to enjoy a mini-break – consider a package that allows you to feast on fine food and enjoy an overnight stay, complete with that essential breakfast in bed the morning after!
Organising The Perfect Christmas Party DON’T be daunted by the prospect of organising a Christmas party. Whether you have been tasked with co-ordinating your work do, or want to organise a get-together for friends or family, now is the ideal time to get out that pen and paper and start planning. Early birds will also avoid the disappointment of unavailable venues and the prospect of leading a lessthan-merry band of revellers around the streets in search of party central! First off, nail down the date. Consult everyone involved as to which dates they are available and, if it is a work function, try to find out the optimum day of the week for the event. For instance, Friday nights might work best because colleagues won’t have work the next day. Finalise a total budget for the event and confirm the number of guests – have in mind a minimum and maximum number of guests who will attend. The right venue is key – consider what type of venue most suits your team; a hotel, unique venue, marquee, bar or nightclub? Location is also crucial – would you like the venue walking distance from your office or are you willing to travel slightly further? It is also important to consider where most people will be travelling back to at the end of the night to make sure the location is convenient and ensure maximum attendance. The party atmosphere is another crucial consideration – do you require a formal sit-down dinner followed by dancing or maybe more of a party atmosphere focusing on drinking and dancing? It is important to be realistic with your budget here, in particular think about what food and drink you would like included in your Christmas party package.
Picking The Perfect Party Venue CHRISTMAS PARTIES come in all shapes and sizes and whether you are organising a cosy get-together for a select few or planning a larger do, the venue is key to its success. Now is an ideal time to check out what all venues have to offer. Killarney is in the enviable position of offering a whole host of venues to choose from, to suit all sizes of parties. Most venues offer bespoke packages tailored to your precise requirements.
After reviewing the proposal and what is included in each package, shortlist the venues offered. This can be a fun part of party planning. It is a good idea to view the venues you are interested in as soon as possible, venues will not hold dates endlessly over the Christmas period therefore, it is best to move quickly on this. When viewing the venues remember to bring the proposal with you so you can check what the package includes at each venue.

Rambo Ready: Rezvani Reveals Tough Tank Suv
Words: Cormac Casey NISSAN has released pictures of its allnew LEAF NISMO concept ahead of official launch at the Tokyo motor show. The sporty EV hot hatch looks the part with larger wheels, lower sport suspension and a bespoke body kit – including a rear-diffuser – boot lid spoiler and redesigned front splitter. And there is no shortage of red-accent NISMO styling cues. While Nissan hasn’t released any techni-
cal, according to some reports, the ‘concept’ can be rushed into production if it’s well received by key global markets. Once confirmed, it’s thought the world’s first pure-electric hot hatch will produce more power and torque than the standard car which runs a 110kW/320Nm single electric motor. Launch of the sporty pure-electric hatch will follow a long-range version of the standard LEAF which is expected to offer a range between battery recharges in excess of 500km.
Grand Tour’s Second Series So far, we’ve only seen a very short ‘sneak peek’ video of The Grand Tour’s second series. But if you’re clamouring for more insight into Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May’s second Amazon Prime Video outing, here’s some good news: a tasty batch of images have been released on the show’s Facebook page. The behind-the-scenes images are taken from the new ‘The Grand Tour Guide to the World’ book, released recently. In the images, we can see what looks like a
cheap Jaguar challenge with a pair of old XJs, an XK and an XJ-S, Richard Hammond driving a ‘Ripsaw’ light tank and an Ariel Nomad, plus a still from that supercar feature that ended in Hammond crashing a Rimac Concept One and fracturing his leg. As to when the series will be out, we can’t be sure. We were originally expecting it late October/early November, but thanks to the Rimac crash and Jeremy Clarkson’s serious bout of pneumonia, a delay seems likely. What we do know is that the studio will be in a fixed UK location this time around.

5TH ANNIVERSARY BROSNAN
We did not see you close your eyes We did not see you die All we knew was that you were gone Without a last goodbye. It was a sudden parting Too bitter to forget Only those who loved you Are the ones who will never forget. The happy hours we once enjoyed How sweet there memories still But death has left a vacant place This world can never fill. Your life was one of kindly deeds A helping hand for others needs Sincere and true in heart and mind Beautiful memories left behind. Always loved and never forgotten by Dad, Margaret, Makaela, Stephen and Padraic.
NOVENA TO THE SACRED HEART Dear Heart of Jesus in the past I have asked for many favours. This time I ask you this special one, (mention favour). Take it dear heart of Jesus and place it within your heart where your Father sees it. Then in his merciful eyes it will become your favour not mine. Amen. Say this prayer three times for three days and your favour will be granted. Never known to fail. Must promise publication of prayer. R.F

If Roses grow in Heaven Lord, please pick a bunch for me. Place them in my Mother’s arms And tell her they’re from me.
Don’t remember me with sadness, Don’t remember me with tears, Remember all the laughter, We’ve shared throughout the years,
Tell her that I love her and miss her, And when she turns to smile, Place a kiss upon her cheek And hold her for a while.
Now I am contented, That my life it was worth while, Knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile,
Because remembering her is easy, I do it every day, There’s an ache within my heart That will never go away.
And when you feel the gentle breeze, Or the wind upon your face, That’s me giving you a great big hug, Or just a soft embrace.
Love Always Ro xxx

The sun still rises in the east, And darkness falls at night, But nothing now seems quiet the same, Each day is not as bright,
Somewhere beyond the sunset, Where loved ones never die, You sleep in a beautiful garden, Beneath a golden sky,
The birds still sing, the flowers grow, The breeze still whispers too, But it will never, ever be The same world without you,
Though Heaven and earth divide us, We are never far apart, For you are always in our thoughts, And forever in our hearts.
It’s so sad that you had to go, Your leaving caused so much pain, But you were very special, And earths loss is heavens gain.

1ST ANNIVERSARY
In loving memory of Jeremy and Mary Joe O’Neill, late of 22 Muckross View, Killarney whose anniversaries occur on October 2 and August 19 Death is nothing at all. I have only slipped away To the next room. I am I and you are you. Whatever we were to each other, That, we still are. Call me by my old familiar name. Speak to me in the easy way Which you always used. Put no difference into your tone. Wear no forced air of solemnity Or sorrow. Laugh as we always laughed At the little jokes we enjoyed together. Play, smile, think of me. Pray for me. Let my name be ever The household word That it always was. Let it be spoken without effect. Without the trace of a shadow on it. Life means all that it ever meant. It is the same that it ever was. There is absolute unbroken continuity. Why should I be out of mind Because I am out of sight? I am but waiting for you. For an interval. Somewhere. Very near. Just around the corner. All is well. Nothing is past; nothing is lost. One brief moment and all will be as it was before only better, infinitely happier and forever we will all be one together with Christ. Loved and remembered every day by your family, Denis, Sinead, Sarah Jane and Mairtin, Orna, Sheá and Fiadh.

NOVENA TO THE HOLY SPIRIT O Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal. You gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances of my life you are with me. I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things you have given me as you confirm once again that I never wanted to be separated from you in spite of all material illusions. I wish to be with you in Eternal Glory. Thank you for mercy towards me and mine. This prayer must be said for three days, after three days the favour will be granted. D.G

NOVENA TO ST. ANTHONY O Holy St. Anthony, gentlest of Saints, your love for God and charity for his creatures made you worthy when on earth to possess miraculous powers. Miracles awaited on your word which you were ever ready to speak for those in trouble or anxiety. Encouraged by this thought I implore you to obtain for me my request (request). The answer to my prayer may require a miracle, even though you are the Saint of Miracles, O gentle and loving St. Anthony whose heart was ever full of human sympathy. Whisper my petition into the ear of the sweet infant Jesus who loved to be held in your arms and the gratitude of my heart will ever be yours. Promise publication. BOC

Delightful Dahlias
LAST week I wrote about dividing herbaceous plants, and much to my surprise, some readers wanted to know more about dahlias, specifically, taking cuttings from dahlias. First of all, it is worth remembering that dahlias are quite a tender plant, and, if the frost does not get them, here in Kerry, the wet probably will… So, when the foliage has withered, carefully dig the plant up and rinse the excess earth off. Cut the foliage back to about six inches, and leave to dry for three weeks in a frost proof, dry shed. To store for the winter, ideally cover them with vermiculite, which is a type of ore which has been heated to make lightweight, absorbent flakes. It is the best way to protect your tubers, though you can also store them in dry peat or sand. Now, to take cuttings from dahlias, you need to trick the tubers into producing a lot of new growth. To do this, place your tubers in a shallow tray of damp all-purpose compost, with just the stem showing. Start the process in late January or early February. Place your trays in a bright frost-free spot, and within a month you will see many vigorous shoots. These shoots have a lot of growth hormone in them, and so are ideal for using as cuttings. Choose the strongest shoots, and, using a disinfected, very sharp knife cut shoots of about six inches long off the tuber, taking a sliver of the tuber as well. Tidy up your cutting by removing the bottom leaves, and trim the end of the cutting leaving a nice clean cutting. Dip it into rooting hormone and place into a pot of damp seed and potting compost. Two or three cuttings to a pot is sufficient, leave plenty of space for air circulation. Either put the pot into a propagator, or use a clear plastic bag to cover the pot, (secure it with a rubber band). This will prevent the cuttings from drying out. It will take about a month for the cuttings to develop roots, at which point you can carefully separate them and repot into individual pots. When all danger of frost has passed they can be planted out. Most will flower in the same year. Autumn is my absolute favourite time of year. There are so many colours and changes afoot! I love the smell of fallen leaves and damp soil. The only drawback is the amount of work to be done! Glasshouses need shading removed, leaves need to be raked from the lawn, plants need to be pruned or cut back altogether. It is a great time of year to be ruthless, pruning wise, as there is no growth, or flowers, to make you feel guilty. If you have large shrubs now is an excellent time to tame them into the right size and shape! • Got a gardening question? Contact Debby Looney on barnhillgarden@gmail.com
Life Through The Lens Of The Gospels MATTHEW 21:33-43: The target audience of this allegorical parable are the Jewish chief priests and elders portrayed here as rejecting Jesus and his teaching, and as a consequence losing out on what God was offering them. It is a story of opportunity for life presented and rejected, and they lose out in the process. How important have you found it to recognise and accept opportunities for growth, development and new life when these were presented to you? The parable is also a cautionary tale about the destructive effects of greed – doing violence to the rights of others and eventually destroying the greedy themselves. What

WHEN God wants to speak to our hearts he leads us to the wilderness. This was his pedagogy with the people of Israel. They had lessons to learn and he had much to teach them. They were schooled and seasoned in the desert. And the schooling was a good 40 years! The 40 years in the desert for the Israelites was a fairly long novitiate. God was their Novice Master! He formed them well with lessons that would last a lifetime! They needed to know that he alone was their God and that they were his people. They had to know

attitude towards possessions has helped you to be at peace in yourself and at peace with others? The vineyard of the Lord is an image for God’s people. As we look at the vineyard we have been given we can ask ourselves “are we good tenants?” Recall times when you have been a good tenant, and reached out caringly for those around you. “It was the stone rejected by the builders that became the keystone. This was the Lord’s doing and it was wonderful to see.” Sometimes a person not highly regarded plays a key role in a project, and it is wonderful to see. Can you recall examples of this? John Byrne Osa, Veritas too that they needed him for they depended entirely on him as he screened them from the scorching sun during the day and sheltered them at night from the freezing cold. The desert is the place between promise and fulfilment. God had delivered the Israelites from slavery in Egypt but they still had to cross the desert to reach the Promised Land. It was not an easy lesson that they had to learn. It took them some 40 years! We who are time bound and always in a hurry find it difficult to keep pace with God’s eternal rhythm. National League (Division 1) Scotts Lakers 79 Neptune 84 TWENTY-SIX points from home debutant Antuan Bootle wasn’t enough for the Lakers as they fell to their first defeat of the season at the Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre on Saturday night. A solid group effort saw Vojkan Bencic’s team lead strong favourites Neptune through three quarters but all their good work was undone during a very disappointing final period. The Cork kingpins went on a remarkable 18-0 run in the fourth to turn the tie on its head and silence the capacity home crowd, who before that must have sensed that a famous upset was on the cards. It was the first time fans at The Auracle got to see Bootle in action and they weren’t left disappointed.
The 6’8” powerhouse, originally from Houston with Bahamian roots, was constantly active at both ends of the floor and his enthusiasm for the game quickly rubbed off on his teammates. Things remained tight on the scoreboard until point guard Mihail Kapitanov hit consecutive baskets to open up a five-point lead with two minutes to play in the first, and Pádraig Lucey added two free throws right at the end to make it 24-14. The second quarter was more disjointed as the Lakers struggled to navigate their way through Neptune’s full court press. The home team also found themselves over the limit early on in this quarter which definitely affected the flow of the game as Neptune, who were unable to get their shot going in the opening stages, gladly took the opportunity to take some free ones from the line. With six minutes remaining in the half, Bootle made it 31-22 with a smooth turnaround jumper before turning provider with a long inbounds pass to Andrew Fitzgerald. The Spa man widened the gap with a neat finish and the Lakers were moving nicely. Veteran Shane Horgan knocked down a big
three off a good pass from Philip O’Connor, and moments later the club captain picked up another assist when he set up Cian Clernon to make it 4226. The Lakers looked to be in total control but then Neptune finally started to hit some perimeter shots to cut the deficit to ten (48-38). It was an ominous sign for the home side as the half drew to a close. The reigning President’s Cup champions really began to show their class as the game wore on and they finally drew level with three-and-a-half minutes to go in the third. The Lakers responded well, however, and scored eight straight to reestablish their dominance, Bootle again the driving force as he crashed the offensive glass to pick up two hard-earned points. When Cian Clernon found the target from deep, the Lakers led by ten but Neptune finished the quarter strongly and scored seven unanswered points to make it a one-score game (64-61). The home team pulled ahead yet again at the start of the fourth to make it 72-64 but then the tide well and truly turned in Neptune’s favour. Led by impressive sharpshooter Gary Walsh, the

visitors knocked down a string of three-pointers to go on an incredible 18-0 run and leave the Lakers completely shell-shocked. Andrew Fitzgerald stopped the rot with 3:50 to play and Keith O’Grady hit an inspirational three to make it 82-77 but, unfortunately for the Lakers, the damage was done. Coach Bencic can take comfort in knowing that Neptune will in all likelihood beat the vast majority of teams in the league, and big man Antuan Bootle has certainly added another dimension to his newly assembled but steadily improving line-up. Mark Greene missed Saturday’s game through injury and Philip O’Connor is still battling a toe problem so we are yet to see the Lakers at full strength this season. They’ll be hoping to have everyone back in action this weekend as they head to Portlaoise to play the Panthers. Lakers top scorers: A Bootle (26), C Clernon (12) and M Kapitanov (11). Neptune top scorers: G Walsh (20), D Murray (16) and R Downey (14).

HAVING enjoyed a comfortable 16-point advantage at one stage, Scotts Lakers were eventually overturned by table toppers Neptune in a thrilling encounter at Killarney Sports Centre on Saturday night. It was a scene reminiscent of one of the great nights of the Killarney basketball glory years in its heyday as an estimated 750 people squeezed into the Sports Centre to cheer on the home side. For long periods it looked as if Scotts Lakers would win this game. Despite the late withdrawals of the injured Mark Greene and Con O’Mahony, the home side started well with Mihail Kapitanov and Justin Tuason leading the way to keep the Lakers in control. Antuan Bootle looked well recovered from a recent injury as he made his presence felt under the boards and Scotts Lakers led 24-14 at the end of the first quarter. Scotts continued to assert their dominance with Padraig Lucey and Andrew Fitzgerald dominating the rebounds battle while timely three-pointers from Cian Clernon and Shane Horgan pushed the home side into a comfortable 42-26 lead with two minutes left in the half. The visitors continued to eat into the Lakers’ lead with Roy Downey and Gary Walsh doing the damage to trail 50-47 after three minutes. Antuan Bootle was dominant under the boards and Neptune really struggled to contain him and with Philip O’Connor and Cian Clernon also hitting big scores, Scotts broke away again to lead 64-54 with 1.17 left in the third quarter. However Neptune came back again and another three-pointer from Gary Walsh clawed it back to 66-63 at the end of the third quarter. Again it was the outstanding Antuan Bootle and Cian Clernon making the big scores as Lakers led 72-67 with eight minutes remaining. Unfortunately the match turned on its head as Neptune went on a 15-0 run in a dazzling spell that lasted less than three minutes. The Cork side really capitalised on the substitution of Antuan Bootle and forced the home side to commit a series of careless turnovers as Neptune completely took over proceedings. There were several talking points about how Scotts Lakers lost this game and effectively threw it away. In a post-match interview, Neptune coach Paul Kelleher referred to the substitution of Antuan Bootle and admitted it was a significant turning point. Bootle left the action with 7.17 left on the clock and the Lakers led 72-71. Neptune had already started their 15-0 run then and by the time Bootle returned after three and a half minutes, the visitors were leading 82-72. The absence of Antuan Bootle at that critical time was certainly a significant factor but the reality of the situation is that Scotts Lakers had other chances and opportunities to win this game. A grand total of 28 turnovers tells its own story. Mark Greene and Con O’Mahony, who had combined for 36 points between them the previous week, were missed but there were many admirable moments for Scotts Lakers last Saturday night.

Eamonn Fitzmaurice To Continue As Kerry Football Manager Words: Eamonn Fitzgerald
EAMONN FITZMAURICE will manage Kerry for 2018 and the county board hopes that he will also be in charge for 2019 and 2020. Those are the wishes of the officers of the Kerry county board. In a recent statement by Tim Murphy, chairman, Kerry County Board, the following emerged: “I am pleased to advise that the Kerry Senior Football Team manager, Éamonn Fitzmaurice, has confirmed that he will continue in his role for the 2018 season. His current management team will remain in place and additions to the backroom team will be announced in due course. “This decision is very welcome and removes any uncertainty, allowing us to begin our preparations for the forthcoming season. “Despite winning the Allianz League and Munster football titles this year and the continuing unprecedented success at under-age and schools grades, we all fully recognise and acknowledge the great hunger for senior championship success among the Kerry GAA community. “Working closely with Éamonn and his management team, the Kerry County Board is determined to provide the resources and supports necessary in order to ensure that Kerry achieves this success as soon as possible. “To that end, the County Board and the Senior Team management have agreed to develop in the coming months, a three-year programme of supports for the senior panel, with particular emphasis on player development and progression together with strength and conditioning. The imminent completion of the Centre of Excellence in Currans will enable us to deliver these programmes within a state of the art facility in a co-ordinated and streamlined approach. “In order to provide stability and underpin this programme I will be proposing that Éamonn Fitzmaurice be ratified as senior manager for a further two year term (2019/2020) at the next county committee meeting on October 16 next. This proposal was unanimously supported by the Executive of the Kerry County Board at a recent meeting. “I am very confident that a strong collective effort will ensure that the phenomenal success we have achieved at minor level will be translated into senior success in the coming years.”

Kerins O’Rahilly’s were very convincing winners over East Kerry in their quarter –final. They scored three goals against East Kerry and indeed it could have been six such was their supremacy in that 3-12 to 1-6 winning margin. They have a great nucleus in David Moran, Tommy Walsh, Con Barrett, Cormac Coffey and their chief scorer, Barry John Keane. South Kerry will be the opposition. They surprised Rathmore 0-15 to 0-12 in their quarterfinal. St Mary’s man Daniel Daly is their chief scorer. They can call on Paul O’Sullivan, Brendan O’Sullivan, Paul O’Donoghue, Mark Griffin and Matthew O’Sullivan. Bryan Sheehan went off injured in their quarter-final and a troublesome hamstring will probably keep him off the team for tomorrow’s game. They will be hoping that Killian Young will be fit to play. If so, South Kerry get the nod to advance to the final.
Round robin hurling format There will be a new Senior Hurling Championship format between 2018 and 2020. Following a lengthy debate at Croke Park on Saturday morning last 62% of delegates voted for Motion 2. Initially it had been decided that Motions 2, 3, 4, and 5 would be discussed before one would go to the floor. Ultimately it means there will be two Leinster and Munster Championship round robin groups involving five teams in each group. The top two in each group will contest the respective provincial deciders. The provincial final winners advance to the All Ireland semi-finals. The beaten provincial finalists will contest the All Ireland quarter-finals.

Can West Kerry Stop The Crokes Machine? Adam Moynihan previews a tantalising Championship double header in the Park
Dr Crokes v West Kerry
West Kerry are a fine team with heaps of potential but they’ll be dealing with the finished article on Saturday.
Just a few short months ago, West Kerry hosted Feale Rangers back in Gallarus in Round 1 of the County Championship. Both sides were considered to be rank outsiders for this year’s tournament and when Rangers ran out 1-13 to 0-12 winners, West Kerry’s stock plummeted. Fast-forward to October and they’re just two wins away from lifting the Bishop Moynihan Cup for the first time since 1990. Make no mistake about it, the task ahead of them is an unenviable one but it has nevertheless been a remarkable turnaround for Paul Quinn’s side.
Odds: Dr Crokes 2/9 - Draw 10/1 - West Kerry 4/1 Verdict: Dr Crokes by four.

West Kerry will be aiming to do what very few teams have done in the past two years & beat the Crokes They began to gather momentum in the loser’s round with a narrow victory over St Kieran’s and earned a spot in the last eight with another hard-fought win over Legion (after extra time). Their quarterfinal opponents Austin Stacks may have had a disastrous 2017 but West Kerry earned many plaudits for the manner of their performance against the men from Connolly Park. They ran out 1-17 to 0-14 winners, corner forward Seán Micheál Ó Conchúir top-scoring

with five points. With a young team made up predominantly of players from An Ghaeltacht (12 of the starting 15 against Stacks), West Kerry will be aiming to do what very few teams have done in the past two years and beat the Crokes. Pat O’Shea’s charges were rampant in 2016 en route to their 11th county title and, following on from their All-Ireland triumph in March, they’ve managed to carry their imperious form into this year’s Championship. They have coasted to the semi-final without conceding a single goal in the process and at 2/9 they’re red-hot favourites to win on Saturday and book their place in another decider.
When Kerins O’Rahilly’s demolished East Kerry a fortnight ago, it forced a lot of people in the county to sit up and take notice. With intercounty calibre players like David Moran, Tommy Walsh, Jack Savage and Barry John Keane all moving well, Rahilly’s have every right to feel as though they’re in with a realistic shot of winning this year’s Championship. There seems to be lingering question marks surrounding their defence but they did well to stifle East Kerry’s forwards in the previous round and their form in this year’s competition speaks for itself. South Kerry, however, will be a different kettle of fish. The ten-time champions looked good against Rathmore, especially in the second half when the likes of Rob Wharton, Brendan O’Sullivan and Daniel Daly really got going. Bryan Sheehan limped off injured early on but his teammates showed great character to pull through and get the result. These two sides met in Round 1 of this year’s Championship and it was Rahilly’s who came out on top, seven points from Barry John Keane helping them to a 2-16 to 2-12 win. It would appear as though South Kerry have improved since then, though, so Saturday’s semi-final has all the makings of a classic. Odds: Kerins O’Rahilly’s 4/7 - Draw 15/2 - South Kerry 7/4 Verdict: Draw.
Double Gold For Ireland At
The World Rowing Championships LAST week, the strength of Irish rowing was once again on show to the world as an ambitious Irish squad arrived in Sarasota, Florida, for the World Rowing Championships. Irish eyes were smiling once more as the squad delivered two gold medals and top performances across the board. The Skibbereen rowing phenomenon continued at full steam with Paul O’Donovan defending his title in the Lightweight Scull while Mark O’Donovan and Shane O’Driscoll delivered an emphatic and impressive win in the lightweight pair. Denise Walsh capped a successful year with a sixth place finish in the women’s lightweight scull. The achievement of two gold medals placed Ireland joint sixth in the medals table of over 60 competing nations. Muckross Rowing Club
is particularly proud of its very own Olympian and now Irish coach, Sean Casey, whose appointment as heavyweight coach has served to greatly strengthen the Irish squad. “Outside the lightweight group and among Sean’s charges, Sanita Puspure once again was among the top six in the world racing in the women’s scull,” said spokesman Tim O’Shea. Two new crews in Irish heavyweight rowing also made their World Championship debut. “We send our congratulations to UCD and former Muckross rower Aileen Crowley who paired with Aifric Keogh of UCC to finish eighth overall in the women’s pair,” said Tim. Patrick Boomer (Belfast BC) and Fionnan McQuillan-Tolan (NUIG) completed the Irish line up finishing 16th overall in the men’s pair.

Jones Named Fantasy Manager Of The Month
Adam Moynihan, left, and Kieran Healy, right, Killarney Advertiser, Brian O’Shea, Brian James, and Alan Jones, winner.
FANTASY FOOTBALL expert Alan Jones has picked up the Serie A-dvertiser Manager of the Month Award following a remarkable string of high-scoring gameweeks throughout September. Jones gladly collected his prize, a €50 voucher for Brian James, from competition sponsor Brian O’Shea, Advertiser assistant general manager Kieran Healy and sports columnist Adam Moynihan on Wednesday. Scores of 61, 74 and 90 left him in a good position going into the final weekend of the month and, in the end, his decision to captain Tottenham striker Harry Kane paid off big time. Kane scored twice against Huddersfield to earn Jones 26 points and when Ben Davies chipped in with a goal, assist and clean sheet in the same game, a big tally was always on the cards. Further clean sheets from David de Gea, Nicolás Otamendi and namesake Phil Jones helped him to an impressive total of 72. Jones saw off stiff competition from runner-up Mark O’Keeffe who made a bold choice in triple captaining Kane (39 points), an option only available to managers one time per season. Unfortunately for Mark, his whopping 91-point haul left him with 293, just four off the top spot. Tom Nolan and John Brendan O’Brien were also in contention but they ultimately came up short by five and six points respectively. In the overall table, August Manager of
Motorsport
the Month Darren O’Mahoney finds himself in joint first with Kevin McCarthy on 457 points, one ahead of Kilcummin footballer Noel Duggan in third. There are currently 374 players in total. Speaking at the prize-giving, sports columnist Adam Moynihan congratulated Alan on his win. “Alan was very consistent right throughout September,” he said. “Obviously making Kane captain was crucial but his defenders also earned him a lot of points, and he made the right changes at the right times to get over the line.” Looking ahead to the coming weeks, Adam reckons it’s a good opportunity for casual players to make a push. “There are only three gameweeks in October with the international break so it should suit guys who maybe don’t have their eye on the overall title,” he said. “A couple of decent weeks could put them in contention for a prize at the end of the month.” When asked if he had any advice for would-be contenders, Adam was reluctant. “I’m actually doing alright this season but I probably wouldn’t be the best person to ask. If I had any secrets I wouldn’t share them anyway. I have my eye on a suit in Brian James.” Note: Although points already earned will not be transferred over into this league, new players can still join up and compete for monthly prizes. To join, visit fantasy.premierleague.com or open the app, go to ‘join leagues’ and enter the code: 1796307-430526. Updates will be shared here throughout the season. Best of luck.

Verstappen Victorious As Vettel Storms To Fourth Formula 1 Briefs ... FERNANDO ALONSO is hopeful of “turning fortunes around” in the Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka this weekend, after admitting to “a couple of difficult races” which have left him 16th in the standings, below McLaren team-mate Stoffel Vandoorne. Force India team owner Vijay Mallya has been arrested for the second time this year on money laundering charges associated with the F1 team. Sebastian Vettel says he is not worried about Ferrari’s reliability-plagued Malaysian Grand Prix weekend, as he believes his team has the situation “under control”.
MAX VERSTAPPEN celebrated his 20th birthday last weekend by winning the Malaysian Grand Prix from the front. A dominating drive saw Verstappen soundly beat Lewis Hamilton, with team mate Daniel Ricciardo holding off Sebastian Vettel for third having started from the back of the grid. After winning the opening-lap tussle with Valtteri Bottas to seize second place, Verstappen confidently took the lead from polesitter Hamilton on lap four. And as Hamilton struggled, the Verstappen never looked back. Ricciardo fought and beat Bottas before himself coming under pressure late in the race from
back-row starter Vettel, who drove a superb race. The latter started on Pirelli’s soft tyres and was thus on light fuel and supersofts when he began to slash into Ricciardo’s advantage late in the race, just as the Australian himself was closing on Hamilton. On lap 49 Vettel got close for a long look down the inside in Turn 1, but Ricciardo was having nothing of it. That proved to be the tipping point, as Vettel’s challenge faded as his tyres began to go off. And after that there was further drama for
Ferrari, when Vettel collided with Lance Stroll’s Williams on the slow-down lap and came to a stop with its left-rear wheel atop his engine cover. The result means that Hamilton is now 34 points ahead of Vettel with five races remaining but we don’t have to wait long for the next instalment with Japanese Grand Prix, Suzuka this weekend.

Killarney native Padraig has recently returned to his hometown having spent the previous two years playing with Geelong Football Club in Australia. “During my time with Geelong FC, I learned a lot about elite training and performance and gained knowledge from some of the best coaches, trainers and athletes that Australia has produced,” says Padraig. While in Australia, Padraig trained with Darren Burgess, former Liverpool FC and Port Adelaide FC strength and conditioning coach, Scott Murphy former Australian rugby team strength and conditioning coach, Chris Dennis former

Padraig is a qualified gym instructor and is currently studying Sport Studies and Physical Education in UCC. The ten-week strength and conditioning course will include a weekly one-hour strength and conditioning session, a weekly one-hour coaching session on nutrition and wellness and full membership of The Aquila Club Leisure Centre. The ten-week course costs €150. “In these training sessions, I will share the knowledge and training that I have gained through my fitness journey while playing many sports in different environments and in different countries around the world,” says Padraig.
Rugby News ... Words: Liam Murphy A WEEK is a long time, and in rugby anything can happen. The rumour recently was that Dave Wessels was to replace Rassie Erasmus as top dog at Munster. However within the space of a few hours, Wessels was confirmed as Head Coach of the Melbourne Rebels in Australia and Munster announced a new Head Coach. South Africa national team assistant coach Johann Van Grann was announced as the new Head Coach
by the Irish Times, however this has yet to e confirmed by Munster Rugby. Also contract negotiations with Simon Zebo are fuelling the rumour mill and Zebo has been strongly linked with a move to France. Though this seems to be a ploy the agents seem to like as everyone gets linked to a move to France when contracts are up for renewal. Hopefully ‘the suits’ will secure the Corkman’s services as soon as possible and announce the new boss to help settle things in Limerick. Last Saturday, Munster took on the Cardiff Blues at Thomond Park, hoping to atone for the embarrassing defeat the previous weekend.

The Dr Crokes U-14 East Kerry winning team which beat Killarney Legion in the East Kerry final.
The big names were back in the fold and a few new old faces lit up the pitch. Conor Murray, CJ Stander and Peter O’Mahony returned from Lions duties to start. However it was returning Kerry native JJ Hanrahan who made the headlines with two great tries in his debut with the Reds. What a way to silence the detractors! Welcome back, JJ! Ian Keatley had a stormer of a match and in the end the home team won 39 points to 16. Next weekend the lads travel to Dublin to take on Leinster at the Aviva in the first of the derbies. Let’s hope Munster can power on from last weekend and continue the good form.

The pairing from Killarney involved in the dramatic and nail-biting play-off were Lady Captain Amy Arthur and Eimear O’Donnell and when they holed their par putt it was enough to clinch the hole, the match and the Championship. The Team, their Manager and Club officials and some supporters were driven to Belfast by Kerry Coaches driver and 7-time All-Ireland medal holder Charlie Nelligan, and Club President Breda Duggan said That Charlie used his experience, and gave the Team a motivational speech before the Final on Friday and again before the Final play-off on Saturday morning, and that Charlie’s words were of great assistance to the team. Declan went on to point out that this has been an absolutely fantastic year for the Ladies Club, who have now brought two National Championships, their Trophies and the respective Pennants to Killarney, to grace our club, the Ladies having previously won the All-Ireland Senior Cup, the Inter-Club Team Championship. Both Team Managers Claire Keating and Mary Geaney and their teams will be remembered for a very long time, and what was all the more remarkable was the fact that so many members of the Ladies Club were involved in both teams concerned. Club President Breda Duggan added that the Club will be presenting Mairead Martin with the highest honour that our Club can bestow on anyone when Mairead will join the ranks of those who have previously received “Honorary Life Membership” on next Sunday evening, the 8th of October. The Club competition
on Sunday the 1st of October was the Liebherr sponsored Singles Stroke competition on Killeen course. The winner with the best back 9 holes was Donnagh Moynihan with a 70, also on the same score were Alan MacSweeney, George Vass and David O’Callaghan so it was indeed a very closely fought contest. Full results were as follows, 1st Donnagh Moynihan) (9) 70, 2nd Alan MacSweeney (7) 70, 3rd George Vass (4) 70, 4th David O’Callaghan (5) 70, 5th David O’Donoghue (3) 71, Cat.1 Ian Cronin (6) 72, Cat.2 Padraic O’Connell (10) 73, Cat.3 Jim Sheehan (14) 71, and Cat.4 Sean O’Donoghue (20) 76. Dr Crokes Club Under 12 Girls: The Clubs Under 12 girls football season came to an end with the conclusion of the East Kerry league last week. Competing in Div 2, the team had a draw with Rathmore in their first game. On the night, the forwards were to the fore, with Sinead Oliver and Leah McMahon both being a handful for their opponents. The versatile Amy Clifford was in goal and had great support in defence from Soairse O’Sullivan, Ella Bartlett, Selina Thawiset Collins, and Teagan O’ Sullivan. Their second game was v ISG Kenmare, and the girls were delighted to welcome back Keira Geaney from injury and she went on to play a great game, as did Natalia Maj in goal. Eimear Finn, Sadhbh Stack and Cara O’ Sullivan performed heroically, and Joceyln Hickey, Sinead Byrne, Ella Barrett and Eleana O’Brien did their utmost for the team but their opponents came out winners on the night. They were victorious in their final group game where Síofra Randles, Katie McCarthy, Alicia Keane and Clodagh McGorrigan stood out. They had home advantage in the B final v Glenflesk. Thanks to goalkeeper Holly Cronin making a number of saves
and Sara Cooper’s goal in the first half the team were 3 points in arrears at half time. Despite the tenacious defending of Gráinne Byrne, Esther Green and Ali O’ Donoghue and the point scoring of midfield pairing of Pia Hickey and Laura O’ Shea the team came up short on the night. Congratulations to Glenflesk on their victory and also to our own Katie McCarthy and Teagan O ‘ Sullivan who’ve been selected for the Kerry U 12 team. Lotto: Lotto 5, 11, 19, 21. Killarney Legion GAA U14 BOYS: Our U14 boys fell agonizingly short in their quest for an East Kerry double when going down by the bare minimum to our great rivals Dr Crokes in the Park. A strong wind made it a
game of 2 halves and it was Crokes who had the benefit of it in the first half and they cashed in with 3 early goals but some solid attacking play saw us half the deficit with a half time score of 3-5 to 1-7. The second half was a slow burner but the game hit a purple patch halfway through the half and it was all square heading down the straight. In the last minutes Dr Crokes got their necks in front and try as we might we couldn’t reel them in. Although defeat was their lot the lads can take great satisfaction out of their years’ work and the progress they have made. U12 GIRLS: The U12 girls qualified for the East Kerry League Final thanks to a fine display against Kilcummin in Direen. A brave and heroic display saw us out winners on a 2-6 to 1-3 scoreline.
