Plunkett St issues far from over
Second Plunkett St public consultation overturned A proposal to hold a second public consultation on the future of the pedestrianisation of Plunkett St was overturned at Wednesday’s Killarney Municipal District meeting. | By Sean Moriarty Cllr Niall O’Callaghan said at the meeting that there was no real plan attached to the Plunkett Street pedestrianisation initiative which was introduced last year. The street closes to traffic every evening at 7pm and reopens the following morning at 7am. A council employee places a barrier across the top of the street to prevent traffic from entering. “It is the same thing as placing a cow gate on the street, did we put music there or
seating, there is no plan, just a cow gate,” Cllr O’Callaghan told the meeting. Cllr Brendan Cronin is a supporter saying its been very positive. “It has enhanced our town and it is paramount to maintain it,” he said. At the end of a lively debate a vote was taken by the six councillors present at the meeting. “If we turn our back on pedestrianisation we are turning our back on tourism. I am pleading to you all to maintain the amount of pedestrianisation we have
now and to look at extending its scope in the near future,” said Mayor of Killarney Cllr Michael Gleeson ahead of the vote on reopening Plunkett St to traffic. In the end, three councillors voted for the proposal; Niall O’Callaghan, Maura HealyRae, and Marie Moloney, and three voted against the motion; Michael Gleeson, Brendan Cronin and Niall Kelleher. Cllr Donal O’Grady was absent from the meeting. Mayor Gleeson used his casting vote to overturn the proposal.

Cllr Donal Grady was unable to attend Wednesday’s Killarney Municipal District meeting as he is currently on a surprise family holiday. | By Sean Moriarty He did ask at the previous Council meeting in July if there was an alternative date available for this week’s meeting - but this was overruled by Council colleagues. However, Grady also has a motion on the same topic before the members that will have to be voted on at the next meeting in November. He has also been very vocal on the issue of pedestrianising Plunkett St., and was the only councillor who voted against the original plan last year. Had he been present on Wednesday, he would have voted against the continuation of the plan. “It will come before the Council again in November and this time it will be voted down,” he told the Killarney Advertiser yesterday (Thursday). “I can see the business people of Killarney taking to the streets protesting about this.”
“This can’t continue on” – Supt Flor Murphy | By Sean Moriarty Although extra Garda patrols have been put in place this week to calm the ongoing disputes in Ballyspillane – local Superintendent Flor Murphy is confident that the issues can be resolved. Another series of public disorder incidents erupted in the estate in the early hours of Friday morning, at approximately 2.30am after two cars were set on fire also causing damage to the owner’s homes. No arrests have yet been made. However, Superintendent Flor Murphy this week told the Killarney Advertiser that he’s confident that the issues can be resolved if those involved could just “step back”, “stay calm” and continue with mediation. “We can solve this once and for all,” Supt. Murphy said. “We all want this to stop. We’re asking
everybody involved to step back, be responsible and law abiding, and think about their families. We’ve extra patrols in place and checkpoints in the area and our investigations are ongoing." Local resident Pat O’Brien’s new Ford Focus, which belonged to his granddaughter, was torched in the driveway. Mr O’Brien, who suffers from diabetes, said he was lucky to escape after he was alerted by the shouts of a neighbour. “I take sleeping tablets for medical reasons,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “I was in a deep sleep.” A second car, a 2018 Volkswagen Passat, belonging to Mr O’Brien’s son-in-law, was also set alight just two doors away. Emergency Services were on the scene within minutes. “Only for the fire service we could have lost the house. The fireman told me if the car was any closer to the house it would
have gone up.”
ONGOING DISPUTE
The fires are the latest in a series of very serious incidents in the estate. In July, the Armed Support Unit was called to the 200-house estate in response to an incident sparked by a fight involving six women in a retail premises in the town earlier that same day. In April, a suspected fire bomb attack on a family home occurred in the estate.
ARRESTS
On Tuesday, two men appeared in Killarney District Court facing allegations related to another disturbance in the estate. They were arrested earlier that day in relation to assaults that took place last September. Judge David Waters questioned why the charges were being brought a year after the alleged incident.
SHOCKED: Pat and Teresa O'Brien outside their home at Hazelwood Drive, where a Ford car was burnt out in the early hours of last Friday morning.

Quintuplets surprise for Currow farmer!
It’s a one-in-eleven-million happening – leaving a Currow family gobsmacked as not one – but five Charolais bull calves born on Saturday night | By Sean Moriarty
CROSS COUNTRIES: Joe O’Leary competed in one of the world’s toughest endurance races in the Swiss, Italian and French Alps
EXCLUSIVE
Killarney man runs for 28 hours straight
The five were born on Patrick Howard’s farm in Bawnagleanna, but sadly one died at birth. “We had fierce excitement,” Patrick told the Killarney Advertiser. “The calves are a great attraction for local children and we have had huge crowds here all the
week. It is a pity the other fella didn’t make it – he died at birth. We are feeding them out of a bottle as the cow would not be able to manage the four of them.” Now the four surviving Charolais bull calves born are set to be named after members of the Kerry football team - at a special naming ceremony on the farm tomorrow (Saturday).
A Killarney man has completed one of the world’s toughest endurance races in the Alps after running almost non-stop for 28 hours. | By Sean Moriarty Joe O’Leary (45), an accomplished mountain runner, took part in last weekend’s Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc, a 160km race with elevations gains of around 10,000 metres. Based in the French town of Chamonix, it is widely regarded as one of the most difficult foot races in the world, and one of the largest with more than 2,500 starters. The race, which has strict entry and qualification requirements gained over a two-year period, crosses the French, Italian and Swiss Alps. O’Leary qualified on the back of several Irish results including winning last year’s Sli Gaeltacht Mhuscrai Ultra Marathon from Millstreet to Ballingeary, but elected to enter the 160km race as opposed to the 170km. “Believe it or not the shorter distance is actually more difficult as we face more direct climbs,” he told the Killarney Advertiser this week. “The climbing in Italy
is crazy stuff, I had one section where I climbed for 2000 metres, around here you have Carrauntoohil, you can only go just over 1000 metres before you start to come down again.” The Lissivigeen man competed the course in 28 hours and four minutes and finished 29th in his age category. “I wasn’t watching the time as that would just wreck your head,” he added. “I finished where I thought I would time-wise. My quads were wrecked though that night and my ankle was sore and slowed me up. The last nine kilometres was relatively easy and maybe I could have come in under 28 hours but I was getting hungry and decided to stop for a bowl of soup and enjoy the last bit.” He hopes to return to the event again and even has ambitions to contest the 320km event that runs alongside the two other races. “That is a team event, you need a team of four so you are never on your own,” he said. “It is for the real head bangers.”

Thank you Dr
Crokes Club and members for hosting the event.” He also acknowledged the staff of the Killarney Court Hotel, and Spoglers Continental Pastries for the lovely birthday cake. “Finally, thank you to all those who sent cards and who also sent good wishes online and on social media. I was very touched and humbled by the support I received to help me celebrate. The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass will be offered up for your intentions as an expression of my gratitude. Brewing up some funds The Killarney branch of the Kerry Hospice Foundation is planning to brew up a storm as part of Ireland’s biggest coffee morning. | By Michelle Crean
EXCLUSIVE EPIC TRIP: American para-athlete Chris Slavin is hoping to become the first person to hand-cycle 2000km around Ireland – to raise funds for The Ian O’Connell Trust.
Para-athlete to handcycle around Ireland
On Tuesday, members of the local branch launched their annual fundraiser outside the Killarney Royal Hotel as part of the nationwide 'Ireland's Biggest Coffee Morning for Hospice Together with Bewley's'. The big day takes place in Killarney on Thursday, September 19 from 10am to 12noon, explained Pat Doolan, Chair of the Kerry Hospice Foundation Killarney Branch. “The main event is at the Royal Hotel who have been very good to us over the years,” Pat told the Killarney Advertiser. “There are other premises hosting events as well such as Killarney Credit Union and Kennellys The Reeks Gateway.” He added that everyone is welcome and they’d appreciate support as it’s a fund-
raiser with money allocated to local services. “We’ll have a raffle as well with some great prizes.” Pat, who has been involved with the Killarney branch for seven years, says it’s always a great occasion. “It’s one of our main fundraisers throughout the year and it’s always well supported. All funds raised stay in Kerry, going towards the inpatient unit, the dedicated hospice rooms in the community hospital and the home care service. The new in-patient unit opened in 2017. It’s costing €500,000 a year annually at the moment. Kerry Hospice have to continually fundraise €400k a year alongside the HSE who contribute a similar amount towards the funding of that unit alone, and approximately €100,000 more is neded to fund the other services.”
Chris plans fundraiser for local wheelchair user | By Sean Moriarty American para-athlete Chris Slavin is hoping to become the first person to hand-cycle 2000km around Ireland – to raise funds for The Ian O’Connell Trust. The epic trip, which begins in Killarney tomorrow (Saturday) at 9am, is being undertaken to raise awareness about spinal injuries. Slavin herself suffered two in her ski career and is now in a wheelchair. A former competitive snowboarder, Slavin was a keen traveller to Ireland, where she hiked the countryside, attended céilís and attempted to learn the Irish language. In 2007, she suffered a serious spinal injury during a US ski-board competition and lost the use of her legs but continued as a para-skier in the mono-ski category. Eight years later she suffered another bad skiing accident that again damaged her spine. She returned to Ireland on the 10th anniversary of her first accident and now
divides her time between Killarney, Massachusetts and Cork. During her time here she befriended local well-known wheelchair users including Ian O’Connell and Timo O’Sullivan of Lough Lein Anglers. This year, as well as completing the Ring of Kerry Cycle on her hand cycle, she set up a charity called ‘Project Possible’ where she hopes to encourage wheelchair users to enjoy the great outdoors in places like Killarney National Park. “Killarney is one of the most accessible towns I have been in Ireland,” she told the Killarney Advertiser. “It is not perfect, but it is comparatively good. ” She picked September when tourist traffic will be less and because it’s also Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Month. Her journey begins at 9am tomorrow morning from the Monsignor Hugh O'Flaherty statute on Mission Road. She is expected to return to the Monsignor Hugh O' Flaherty statue by September 28.

Seán looks Straight Ahead for charity After a 260km fundraising cycle, local man Seán Casey was happy to hand over the proceeds to a charity close to his heart. | By Michelle Crean
STRICTLY FANTASTIC: The Killarney/South Kerry branch of The Irish Cancer Society raised €58,401 for The Irish Cancer Society following the recent Strictly Come Dancing event. Seated from left are: Eleanor O'Doherty, Emmet Flanagan and Ciara O'Donoghue (overall winners), Eugene O'Sullivan, Kathleen O'Shea, Kathleen Cronin, Kathrina Breen and Tim Moriarty. Picture: Eamonn Keogh
It was Strictly for the funds.... and fun!
Sean, from Lissivigeen, took part in a one day group cycle from the Silversprings Hotel in Cork to Crumlin Hospital in June raising funds for ‘Straight Ahead Ireland’. Seán chose the charity as daughter Éabha suffers from scoliosis and has undergone up to 20 operations since the age of six to straighten her back. Her most recent was a 10 hour bone fusion with new rods inserted into her back last year. The cyclists managed to raise a whopping combined €14,086, over €1000 of which was raised by Seán. Éabha herself didn’t use the service as it wasn’t up and running then – but Seán is delighted to help others as funds will provide surgery, support and medical
equipment for children with orthopaedic conditions. “Unfortunately we didn’t use the service as it wasn’t available at the time,” Seán, who thanked his employer Liebherr for donating €300, said. “Funds raised will go towards alleviating the waiting list for those waiting for the surgery and equipment.” Éabha, who was a student in the Intermediate School Killorglin, has just received fantastic Leaving Cert results, he added. Seán is married to Lisa, Deputy Principal of the Gaelscoil Faithleann, who also raised funds for the same charity in March. Lisa raised €2,300 when she requested donations instead of presents for her 50th birthday.
An entertaining night of dancing – watched by over 1500 people – raised a whopping €58,401, thanks to the generous support of locals. | By Michelle Crean 12 couples, trained by Tralee choreographer Cassie Leen, took to the INEC floor in March for the Killarney and South Kerry branch of the Irish Cancer Society – which was won by Emmet Flanagan and Ciara O'Donoghue. And, not only did the dancers spend weeks perfecting their dance moves – but also asked everyone and anyone they could to support the good cause. The result was the massive cheque handed over to the Irish Cancer Society charity on Friday night in the East Avenue Hotel. “We’d like to thank the people of Killarney for their generosity,” Kathrina Breen told the Killarney Advertiser. “This was out fifth year and the biggest Strictly Come Dancing to date.”
Funding will now go to Home Care Night Nursing, the freephone advice line, cancer beds in hospitals and Travel to Care grants. “We’ve had 364 nights for 66 patients in Kerry this year. We also do the volunteer driving scheme and have had 336 drives for 41 patients this year, the Daffodil Centres provide face to face advice and we do Breast Check and Bowel Screening as well as advocacy work in relation to parking for cancer patients and have this year provided 500 hours counselling to those wrongly diagnosed by Cervical Check. A big part of the fundraising money will go to cancer research which is ongoing.” She added that their next fundraising event takes place on October 11, and they're looking for volunteers if anyone has a spare hour to give.

Horrific animal cruelty case before Killarney court One of the most horrific cases of animal cruelty in the county has been before Killarney court this week. Christy Casey, of Crosstown, Killarney and his son John Casey Jnr are facing a total of 21 charges relating to alleged breaches of animal health and welfare regulations. Department of Agriculture veterinary inspectors are bringing charges against the Casey family following an inspection of their lands in May of this year. State Barrister Tom Rice told Killarney District Court on Tuesday that a calf was found on the land with just three legs and that there was insufficient water and food available to the herd.
“The foot had been amputated and the animal was not in great condition,” said Mr Rice. Mr Casey was appearing in relation to 14 other charges that stemmed from an earlier case investigated by the department into him and his son, John Casey (37). Judge David Waters adjourned seven charges against Mr Casey Jnr and 14 charges against Mr Casey Snr after being told Mr Casey Jnr was receiving psychiatric care at University Hospital Kerry. Mr Casey Snr was in court on foot of a bench warrant after failing to appear at the previous sitting of the court in July. Solicitor Padraig O’Connell said the reason his client did not show-up in July was he was at the hospital tending to his son.

VIEWS NEWS “Irish society is no longer built on people first” ON
THE
x
World War 2 was declared 80 years ago this week after Germany invaded Poland. 80 years is the life expectancy of individuals in Europe these days. So in a lifetime we have had this war which led to the iron hand of Soviet Union across Eastern Europe, as well as the Cold War, and we have had the European Union and its other versions which has brought peace to Europe. I listened - in vain - for the anniversary of this catalyst of a lifetime of history to be marked in a significant way on Tuesday. Instead of the noble decision to save Europe in '39, what I heard on BBC 4 was overwhelmingly about Brexit, and about re-alignment, with reference to how “the special relationship” between the US and England was forged in World War 2. And I heard how England is once more "aligning" with the US. There was scarcely a mention of Europe - except how to leave it. There is no doubt the entry of the Yanks helped win the war for the Allies but it seems very odd that far from marking the momentous decision to declare war, the national broadcaster of the UK chose to mark the future relationship with America. It got me thinking that perhaps it is time
for us too "to realign". American money may have brought us certain material comforts, but we have paid a very heavy price for our unquestioning and uncritical acceptance of American culture over the past three decades. As Mary Harney the Progressive Democrat (PD) once put it - we have been nearer to Boston than Berlin - to our detriment. In the past 30 years, coinciding with the rise of the PDs, we have thrown almost everything in our whole social fabric aside in the pursuit of our special relationship with Boston. We have given the free market a free hand, a freer hand than anywhere in Europe, apart from the UK. We have privatised our most precious services, we have built a housing crisis that we thought we had resolved in the 1950s. And we have a health service for those who can pay for it. And in the past two decades, in pursuit of cheap labour, we have pretended we were a mini-US with our arms open. The upshot? We have a society now, in its lack of social supports, that is the envy of no one. Nobody now wants to move to Ireland for its gentle lifestyle. People come

to make money. There is growing evidence in Killarney that they are returning - because rent prices have skyrocketed. Ireland unfortunately is a society no longer built on people first. I don't know where it started but I do believe the fork in the road was in 1987 and the rise of American style universities here and the PDs outnumbering Labour and being part of Government for almost 20 years. The PDs tapped into the worst of an emerging greed culture in Fianna Fail, Fine Gael and even Labour, who all became shameless marketeers, selling off the family silver of good solid companies. Why did the turf station have to shut down in Cahersiveen? Why was the sugar taken out of Mallow? Why was the Corrib gas and oil given for a song? Why were our town councils, Garda stations and our Post Offices shut down? We think nothing now of having to have young parents beg at shopping centres for the costs of basic maintenance in primary schools, or people collecting for a dialysis or scanning machine? Brexit will give us an opportunity for a re-alignment of our own. It will allow us to rethink our strange reverence for America and its shameless pursuit of wealth, its poor social structure, its 24/7 demand of its workers and its chlorinated chicken. We might finally start taxing the Googles, the Facebooks and the other US companies so we don't stand on wet streets collecting for shelter, food and copybooks. England with its Thatcherite history of privatising water and rails, and its society even more broken than ours will suit the Yanks just fine!
It’s time for Killarney to act Ballyspillane is in the news for all the wrong reasons. And while I have a certain sympathy for those people who are being "attacked" and are speaking to the media, I have more sympathy for the people in Hazlewood Drive and surrounds, who have to put up with the kind of behaviour that
is going on there with almost two years now. Their peace is disturbed. They live in fear and their houses are worth far less than they should be. This is not Tralee, Listowel or Castleisland, and this type of thing is unheard of in Killarney.
Property values in Ballyspillane, whether in the private part or public part, are lower than anywhere else in Killarney. The town as a whole is getting a bad name and is being dragged down. Leaders of the settled Traveller community seem to be getting nowhere in trying to reason with a small number of

Politics was meant for men - it was built for them. This sop to women is quite condescending. Westminster is the “Father of all Parliaments”. And just as Kerry and Irish politics is losing women who simply find the whole commitment too much of a burden, in Scotland the Conservatives have lost their star, Ruth Davidson. North Kerry’s Aoife Thornton is reluctant to run for the Dáil, and Toireasa Ferris has pulled out both were almost guaranteed seats. Maybe as we mourn the loss of women, we should also ask ourselves what good is politics anyway? Who are the real decision makers in society and how can it be re-imagined for women? their people at the centre of this feud. The Gardai, while clearly acting now, have come in for criticism for not taking a heavier hand sooner. And local councillor Donal Grady has called for the army to be brought in. But I think the matter is wider than the Travellers or the Gardai. I think the Chamber of Commerce needs to be involved, as well as the church and the County Council. It is time for all of Killarney to act, not just the Gardai and the Traveller Mediation Service.

He is once again calling on people to come and support the event which takes place on Sunday, October 13. Funds raised from the walk along the Old Kenmare Road, will go to MS services for the South Kerry area, and John explained that it’s an event which brings great crowds every year. “It’s our 17th year and it’s a good family day out,” he told the Killarney Advertiser.
“Around 200 people take part every year and we’re always looking for new walkers to take part.” Participants will meet between 9am and 10am at the Gleneagle Hotel on the morning of the walk, he explained. “We get bussed into Kenmare Town and are collected at Torc on the way home.” And he said he’d like to thank all those who help to make it a success. “We’d like to thank the Gleneagle, O’Callaghan’s Coaches for providing transport, O’Sullivan’s Outdoor Shop in New St., without their support it wouldn’t be possible.” For cards and more information call John O'Shea on 087 2348824.
RECOGNITION: Lara O’Brien received the Monica Harrington Memorial Cup from Don Harrington for her efforts behind the scenes at Killarney Athletic Football Club.
Lara honoured for her great club contribution Local woman Lara O’Brien has been named as this year’s recipient of the ‘Monica Harrington Memorial Cup’ for her outstanding contribution to Killarney Athletic Football Club. | By Sean Moriarty The award, which is now in its fifth year, is made to a female club member who has made the greatest contribution to club over the past 12 months. It was presented by Don Harrington, a former Killarney Garda and club founder, at the clubhouse on Tuesday evening. Lara spent seven years in Australia where she trained as a soccer coach with Mosman United and was also a member of the Killarney club’s first U16 ladies team before she moved down under. Since her return, Lara has coached the U13 boys with Brian Bowler to league
glory. Lara also solely coached the U14 B boys and eight to 10-year-old girls with Martin Crowley and will continue in these roles for the coming season. “I don’t do this for the awards, I do it because they are such a lovely bunch of kids,” she told the Killarney Advertiser. “I am delighted and overwhelmed.” Lara is married to Shane McSweeney and has four children, David, Lauren, Millie and Erin, who all play with the blues. Her uncle Kieran O’Brien was also a founding member of the club and her grandfather Charlie O’Brien gave the club the use of his lands as playing pitches during the club’s formative years.

Killarney lady to take on huge cycle challenge | By Sean Moriarty A Killarney woman is one of six people about to set off on an epic 600km cycle to raise money and awareness for suicide charity Pieta House. Gillian Kissane will cycle from the most southerly tip of Ireland to the country’s most northly point, Mizen Head to Malin Head, next week.
They’ll begin their journey next Thursday (September 12), with Gillian and five of her work colleagues from Liberty Insurance in Dublin hoping to make Malin Head by Sunday evening. Gillian, who is from Minish, has just returned from Spain where she spent just over a week walking the Camino. She has been working as an actuary in Dublin for the last nine years. She is also the only lady in the group. “I only stumbled upon the idea after
my seventh Ring of Kerry Cycle in July,” Gillian told the Killarney Advertiser. “Without much time to train, I hope that my commute to work and the odd spinning class will be enough. All of the crew feel passionately about helping to raise funds for Pieta House." Their employer, Liberty Insurance is sponsoring their accommodation and they’re asking the public to support their challenge. “Please lend your support by sponsoring our journey. We are cycling to raise funds for Pieta and it coincides with Suicide Awareness Week.” Details of her fundraiser can be found on www.justgiving.com: Gillian's Mizen to Malin Cycle.

Train to be a counsellor With the growing emphasis on mental health and personal well-being, counselling is playing an ever-increasing role.
Counselling, or psychotherapy, is a professional relationship where clients explore and understand their lives, tell their story, get listened to, and find respect and acceptance. Over time people can work towards healing emotional pain, distress and trauma. This process can also help people to look at themselves in a new way, to gain confidence and to take charge of their own lives. Cork Counselling Services was founded in the early 1980s, the first centre in Cork and Kerry to provide a professional counselling service to the community regardless of their finances, beliefs, ethnicity, sexual orientation or educational background. It has been situated at 7 Fr Mathew Street, Cork City for most of that time, just one hour from Killarney. The organisation also trains students as professional counsellors and has recently attracted degree level university accreditation from Coventry University. It has also received the validation of Irish
Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (IACP), the largest counselling professional body in Ireland, and Cork Counselling Services Training Institute is one of its longest standing training centres. First and foremost, the training is led by trainers who counsel as much as they teach, Hugh Morley, Head of Business at Cork Counselling Services, explained. “The student’s initial client work will be done in our busy centre, accompanied and supervised by our team,” he said. “This level of student support at a crucial training stage is unparalleled by other colleges. We also offer in-house placement opportunities when you need to build up your practice hours in order to qualify. In this case, you do not have to find your own clients or find a premises from which to work." He added that they train in the integrative humanistic model of counselling. “This means that we draw from all the major counselling and psychotherapy theories.” To find out more visit www.corkcounsellingservices.ie or visit their open evening on Friday, September 20, at 5pm.

WELCOME to our new health column. Each week we plan to bring you the best in natural health beginning with the benefits of taking supplements.
Supplements for better health Most surveys of eating habits conducted since the 1990s show that even people who claim to eat a good balanced diet may still fall short of optimum levels of essential vitamins and minerals. Why, you may wonder, does a good diet not contain all the vitamin and minerals we need for health? Studies show us that nutrient levels in food are falling. Refining food [turning brown into white] also strips away valuable nutrients. Poor intake of nutrients may have a negative effect on your overall heath, also sluggish digestion leads to poor absorption of essential vitamins and minerals from our food. Most people put up with feeling “all right” and may be more prone to regular colds, have low energy, poor digestion, low moods and much more. Ensure your diet is as rich in nutrients as possible. This along with increased intake of certain vitamin and minerals can boost immunity, increase energy and promote a healthy life. Some of the supplements to consider include: • ONE NUTRITION POWER GREENS: available in powder or capsule form. This super food will help ensure you get your daily intake of all your essential vitamins and minerals. Helps with improved energy levels, strengthens immune system, better digestion and visibly improved hair, skin and nails.
• A GOOD QUALITY MULTIVITAMIN: it is important to ensure you choose a multivitamin which suits your specific needs, e.g. if stress is an issue for you, get a multivitamin high in B vitamins. It is always a good idea to buy your supplements where you can get professional advice to ensure you are making the correct choice for you. • DIGESTIVE ENZYME: gut health is a huge part of our immune system so keeping it healthy and in balance is key to good health. One capsule before each meal will help ensure this. • ANTIOXIDANTS: these are nutrients that help the body from damage. While too much alcohol, smoking and poor diet harm the body, damage is also caused by everyday activities such as breathing polluted air, digesting food and fighting infection. The good news is that the body has an inbuilt repair system but needs particular nutrients such as Vitamin A, C, E, Co-Enzyme Q10 and Betacarotene to help eliminate toxins. As always we are available to advise you on which supplement suits your requirements best. Remember to take a good quality PROBIOTIC such as BIO-KULT OR OPTIBAC regularly, this helps maintain your healthy gut bacteria and ensures you are absorbing your nutrients for optimal health. Until next time, stay healthy, from all at Horans.

A Currow man and his Spanish wife celebrated the christening of their son in Killarney last Saturday. Padraig O’Leary and his wife Mercedes christened son Tadhg Rafael at St Mary's Cathedral, Killarney last Saturday. The couple are currently based in Valencia on the east coast of Spain but met in Killarney when Mercedes was working as an au pair in the town. GARDEN MAGIC
Gardening - By Debby Looney
Debby is available for advice and garden consultations, just call 086 6088156 or email barnhillky@gmail.com
Time to tidy and prune your garden It really feels like autumn has set in - leaves are turning brown, and, if your garden is anything like mine, it looks like a mess. Perennials are brown and gone to seed, shrubs are leggy and trees are overgrown. The time has come for tidying and pruning. People are often apprehensive about pruning, afraid of ‘doing it wrong’ or ‘killing the plant’. It is very difficult to do either as plants are very resilient. Usually the worst that can happen is that the plant might not flower in the following year. There is of course a ‘right way’ to prune, and also a ‘right time’ to prune. For most plants the dormant season is the correct time to cut them back. This dormant period is traditionally from November to March, but I find that time is coming sooner these days. There is no harm in pruning most shrubs in September or October, especially if they have finished flowering. Shrubs such as potentilla, butterfly bushes, hebes, weigelias and so on, benefit from a severe pruning each year to prevent them going too ostalky and woody. Ideally, you use a secateurs to prune cutting the stem at a slant away from the bud below it. This is to prevent water logging in the new bud. However, in practical terms, using a hedge shears makes more sense if you have a lot to do. The drawback with the shears is that you cut to a shape rather
than to the natural growth habit of the plant, and it might look unnatural and not flower very well. The plant will not die as a result! Shrubs which flower in the spring such forsythia and heamamelis and winter flowering heathers, need to be cut back immediately after flowering, but only so that they will flower the following spring. Again, if you choose to do it now it will not kill the plant. Hedging, especially box hedge, should be cut back now to tidy it up and encourage thicker growth in the spring. Red robins should be cut back twice a year, in the late spring when the first flush of new red growth turns green, and later in the summer when the second flush of new shoots turn green. This way, you will get a thicker hedge, and still enjoy the red shoots. There are several reasons to prune; to take out diseased parts, to shape a plant, and to encourage growth. When you prune growth hormones accumulate at the tip which is why you get a bushier plant if you prune regularly. Perennial plants, such as geraniums, lupins, osteospermums and many border plants can do with a tidy up at this stage, either down to ground level if they have turned brown, or else halfway in order to prevent wind damage. However, many people leave dead flower heads on plants such as teasels and echinaceas to give hibernating insects a place to hide over the winter.

Careers Week planned at Kerry College With over 70 sci-tech companies in Kerry, the opportunities for a career in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) has never been better. With a worldwide shortage of STEM talent, companies in Kerry are constantly looking for initiatives to ensure a strong pipeline of software developers and engineers who can meet the growing demand in the region. To address this, earlier this summer, Kerry College and Code Institute began a partnership of reskilling for a digital future. 14 Kerry-based candidates have now undergone an intensive reskilling programme to become junior software developers and will engage with local organisations such as Aspen Grove Solutions, Tweak, JRI America, Sneem Digital Hub, FRS Recruitment and Salaso at Careers Week, from September 2 to 6 at Kerry College – Monavalley Campus. “We have an extremely vibrant science, tech and engineering ecosystem here in Kerry and much of that is down to the outstanding work of our member com-
panies and local partners who together are ensuring that our region is emerging as a world-class sci-tech hub,” Aoife O’Brien, from KerrySciTech, said. “With a growing demand for software skills, we are delighted to support Kerry College who through this innovative partnership with Code Institute are addressing the skills needs in the county.” John Herlihy from Kerry College added that the practical programme will give students job-ready skills along with an academic qualification. “Code Institute’s Diploma in Software Development is the only University credit-rated coding bootcamp in Europe and is Level 6 on the Irish NFQ. What's great about this intensive programme is that there are no exams. Instead, students focus on developing a portfolio of projects, which they can present to local employers at Careers Week.” Developers will also participate in soft skills and technical interviews at Careers Week, as well as portfolio preparation and presentation. Senior Developer, Matt Rudge, will also host a fun and energetic Hackathon, where students will hack social justice issues, he added.

Mystery supporter leaves £1.5m to Sinn Féin WHAT'S IT ALL ABOUT? 100 years of space will be celebrated in a new exhibition in Cork next week.
100 years of space in new exhibition
A unique exhibition which showcases some of the most significant and surprising astronomical breakthroughs over the last century will open in Cork city next week. The ‘Above and Beyond’ Exhibition was commissioned within the framework of the International Astronomical Union (IUA) 100 year anniversary celebrations, and it has been touring major European cities to illustrate astronomical

discoveries that have shaped science, technology and culture. The exhibition at Cork City Hall, outlines that scientific discovery is not a one-off endeavour but a continuous process that takes decades to fully grasp and comprehend. To celebrate the exhibition coming to Cork, UCC has recorded a dedicated episode of its Plain Speaking podcast with one of the world’s leading astrophysicists, Dr Katie Mack. The exhibition is underpinned by three
core questions that are just as penetrating today as they were a century ago: What is the size and structure of the Universe? Is there life beyond the earth? What powers the stars, how do they begin to shine and what happens when they die? “We have so much to thank our stars for and this exhibition brings to life the remarkable discoveries that fundamentally changed our understandings of our entire universe,” UCC Professor, Paul Callanan, said. “Anyone with an interest in our stars should come and visit.” The exhibit has been created by IUA and the event in Cork is supported by UCC, the Cork Astronomy Club and Blackrock Castle Observatory. The exhibition runs from September 6-19 in the Atrium of City Hall.
Pence siding with the UK Trump’s lack of knowledge on Irish history and complete disregard for the Good Friday Agreement could hurt Ireland very badly as a no deal Brexit becomes ever more likely. Earlier this week, US Vice President Mike Pence was in Dublin where he met with Taoiseach Leo Varadkar to discuss amongst other things the looming Brexit train crash. Up to this point, Pence was considered the most likely ally Ireland had in the current US administra-
tion. Trump is already cosying up to Boris Johnson and promising all sorts of special trade deals with the UK, assuming the latter survives another few weeks as head of the British Government. A hard Brexit will bring a hard border to the island of Ireland and could spell a return to the grim and bloody past. It will certainly fly in the face of the Good Friday Agreement. “That is why we must stand our ground on the Withdrawal Agreement; an agreement which was
Sinn Féin has received what is believed to be the largest private donation to a political party in Northern Ireland’s history. The gift of £1.5m was made by a William E Hampton and was paid in two instalments in April and May this year. Mr Hampton, who was not married and had no children, left some money to friends and acquaintances, but the main beneficiary of the will was the Irish republican party. It is understood that he spent some time living in Ireland and was a longtime supporter of the party before his death on January 11, 2018 at his home in Pembrokeshire, Wales, at the age of 82. The donation was brought to the attention of the National Crimes Agency in Britain. However, Sinn Fein followed the correct protocol and declared the donation to the Electoral Commission.
carefully negotiated to overcome all these risks,” Varadkar said, and urged Mr Pence “to bring the message back to Washington with you”. However, Pence sided with the UK. Speaking at a press conference in Dublin he said Ireland and the European Union should “negotiate in good faith with Prime Minister Johnson and work to reach an agreement to respect UK sovereignty and minimise disruption to commerce”. It was akin to being invited to your mate’s house for dinner and then telling him that his wife’s cooking was rubbish.

Motorists unaware of cost savings In the first half of 2019 there were 30 electric and 120 hybrid cars licenced in Kerry – accounting for two percent and eight percent respectively of new private car sales. Experts at Insuremycars.ie say that sales are increasing at a slow and steady pace, a progression they expect to quicken as people realise the cost savings available when it comes to insuring these vehicles both on a private and commercial basis. “The licensing and sales of e-cars, while still small, are on the rise – with an increase of almost 70 percent in the first half of this year alone,” Jonathan Hehir, Managing Director of Insuremycars.ie, said. “These increases are in the face of a car sales market that is in decline, with the
overall number of car sales so far this year showing a decrease of 12.2 percent compared to 2018.” Despite increases, the company say they have noticed that people are still, to a large extent, unaware of the impact that going electric can have on insurance premiums. Not only can driving an electric car lower your insurance premium, it also carries a wide range of monetary benefits including: reduced running costs, €120 motor tax band for electric vehicles, reduced fuel costs, positive environmental benefits, a government grant of up to €7,000 for the purchase of the vehicle and reduced toll charges on the M50 Motorway under the Electric Vehicle Toll Incentive scheme (EVTI).

Former Kerry footballer, John O’Keeffe, received the award at the seventh annual GPA Football Legends Lunch. The aim of this popular networking event is to honour football legends for their contribution to Gaelic games and Irish society. O’Keeffe was a member of the Kerry senior inter-county team from 1969 until 1984. He was a highly talented midfielder, and one of the most stylish and accomplished full-backs in Gaelic football history. O'Keeffe won seven All-Ireland Senior Football Championship medals and 12 Munster Championship medals. Other honours he won include seven National Football League medals and eight Railway Cup medals between Munster and the Combined Universities. He also won a Munster Junior Championship medal in 1969. He
is among the leading recipients of GAA All Stars Awards, with five awards from 1973, 1975, 1976, 1978, and 1979. He was also named the Texaco Footballer of the Year in 1975. As one of football’s greatest full backs, John has a long list of achievements including: seven All-Ireland Senior Football Championship medals; 12 Munster Championship medals; seven National Football League medals; eight Railway Cup medals, and five GAA All Stars Awards. He was also named the Texaco Footballer of the Year in 1975. After retirement, John then went on to manage both Clare and Limerick at county level, and he was part of Kerry’s All-Ireland winning management team in 2000. He has also been a valued contributor for The Irish Times. The Gaelic Players Association honoured John with the award to celebrate his long-standing career and contribution to football as a player, manager and champion.
Radio Kerry has received six nominations for the 2019 National Radio Awards. The annual awards, sponsored by IMRO, recognise the best in Irish radio and include local, national and regional stations in the 32 counties. Overall, 652 entries were received with 185 shortlisted across 37 categories and 105 judges, including industry veterans and new independents. The 2019 event will take place on Friday, October 4 at the Lyrath Estate Hotel in Kilkenny. This year’s nominations are in the following categories: News Story ‘When Mistakes Cost Lives’ – Radio Kerry’s coverage of the scan scandal at UHK, Short Feature ‘Cluas Chiarrai’ - the students, ‘Live from the Past’ - Joe Mc Gill, Digital and Social Innovation ‘Cluas Chiarrai’, Sports Broadcaster of the Year Local Tim Moynihan and Speech Broadcaster of the Year Local - Jerry O’Sullivan. “The nominations are a credit to the Kerry team members involved in putting
both the programmes and the submissions together as well as an acknowledgement by their peers in the radio industry of the quality programming being produced at Radio Kerry,” Radio Kerry’s General Manager, Fiona Stack, said. 112 nominations have been received by Radio Kerry since 2005 and the station has been awarded 48 National Radio Awards including 15 gold, 14 silver and 25 bronze awards. Radio Kerry has also been awarded ‘Local Radio Station of the Year’ five times in 2005, 2007, 2010, 2014 and 2016. Also, Fiona Stack received the award for ‘Outstanding Achievement in Irish Radio', in 2012. IMRO invites radio stations annually to submit entries that they feel show a true and thorough representation of the output of the station. Entries span all aspects of the station’s content from music programmes, sports, news and speech programmes that reflect the quality of its contribution to their local county and wider franchise area.

Consistency is key for skincare A morning skincare routine is non-negotiable if you want to enhance the health of your skin from the inside out. If you must drink coffee in the morning then wait to do that until breakfast. Green tea and coconut water are some other great beverage options for the morning. Cleanse, tone, moisturise and protect your skin. Applying your skin care products in the proper order ensures that your skin receives the full benefits of each product. The skin’s job is to keep things out, but many of the skin care products we use have ingredients we want to get in. Only a very small amount of these key ingredients can penetrate the skin, even when perfectly formulated and perfectly applied. If you don’t apply products in the correct order, you will not see the best results from your skin care regimen. The morning routine is all about protection from the sun, pollution and the elements, so leave your peel pads and
5
treatment products like retinol, for the night time routine. Cleanse or use face wash, and always start the morning by splashing the face with warm water. Toners act as a delivery system for antioxidants, vitamin B derivatives and even toning acids. Additionally, each type of toner is intended for a different skin issue, so it’s important to use the right kind for your skin concern. Regular use of eye cream over time will keep the eyelid skin elastic and can improve or prevent against some fine lines. The best time to apply a moisturiser is while the skin is still damp, so the sooner you go through applying your serum and treatment, the sooner you’re able to lock in much-needed hydration with your moisturiser. As for those who like using chemical sunscreens, try to look for formulas that offer moisturising benefits, so you can get your daily hydration needs while protecting your skin. Sunscreen should be the last step in your daytime skin care routine SPF 50 for total protection. Next week we will go through night time routines.

vertiser. "We are very privileged to do what we do and are always striving to ensure our clients are happy!" This year the practice was awarded ‘Best Practice in Munster and Leinster’ in the 2019 Irish Dental Awards.

Marie’s Slimming World Killarney
143 stone lost in two months! It’s been an exciting summer in Marie’s Slimming World Killarney as members lost more than a staggering 143 stone! At a time when members usually feel they couldn’t possibly lose weight the Slimming World members in Hotel Killarney lost 2004lbs in the two months the schools were closed. How could this be possible - well, because Slimming World isn’t a diet! Yes, it is a lifestyle change, but it really is coming back to everyday normal foods that you already eat and love. Members decide what they want to eat from the extensive list of free foods e.g. meat, potatoes, pasta, rice, eggs, beans, fruit and veg, with a daily amount of breads and cheeses. And you can still have your treats! So if you’re eating what you love and eating the same amount as you normally have and lose weight then it’s win win! Two such members who embraced the 50-year-old food optimising plan are twins Diana Cronin and Helena Daly who joined together and amazingly got to target the same day!
Consultant Marie O’Sullivan said it was an incredible morning and so emotional. These twins, inseparable best friends, did this together and were a huge support to each other and fantastic help to everyone else in the group. In fact, they got to target on the same day after losing 4st 8.5lbs combined in only 13 weeks, Marie who runs the group, explained. “There are so many awards handed out each week it makes this more than a job, it’s much more than that,” she said. “Everyone is unique and that’s what makes all the members fabulous. They are such fun to be around in group, there’s always a laugh, and in turn they are helping and inspiring each other. I’m also looking forward to taking over The Brehon’s Tuesday morning groups and helping more members,” Marie said.

HEALTH & FITNESS Advice - By Brian Foley Brian is available for advice and fitness consultations, Call 087 403 0894 or email info@activate.ie • www.activate.ie
Write your own story! In one of our first ever blog posts we wrote about fitness as a vehicle for your life, the premise was that we do this hard work in the gym to allow the pursuit of adventure outside the gym. On your deathbed you might not care about your max squat weight, but you will be glad you climbed Carrauntoohiland the squats helped you do it. In conversation with a friend this weekend, I mentioned that I was in the middle of setting up a fitness competition. He said, “You must have the most interesting life". And that’s a great compliment. Our goal is to create interesting experiences for you, to create new chapters, or funny little episodes that will make you fold the page forever. Many times, when I see people outside the gym, they’ll say “Hey, remember that time I…” and share a story from our gym. Many people have rewritten their life story at Activate and many other gyms. This summer, we created some huge opportunities for people to write new chapters. 1. Q uest Adventure Races: On October
12, the Activate family will race in Killarney. Most of us have never done this before. It’s a fantastic adventure because these races are built with the “first-time adventurer” in mind. We’ve run adventure race trainings to help people prepare for it in the past. And getting you fitter and stronger will give you the confidence to get to the start line. 2. T he Ring of Kerry Cycle: On July 6, 20 of our members rode 180km for various charities. It’s not a race, but an amazing feat to accomplish. You can do it, and we’ll help you along the way, fitness is the vehicle for an experience you once thought out of your reach. 3. There’s a ton of other events that Activate members have done this summer. They’re all awesome. And will live long in the memory. Having a training goal is valuable to the point of necessity. Having a road map to help you achieve it is critical - but finishing with a great story – that’s really the goal of all of it, and fitness is the platform to get you there.

New Kerry tourism brochure launched Some of Kerry’s most scenic attractions are in the spotlight this week with the launch of a brand new brochure in Killarney. ‘The Parks, Gardens and Woodlands of Kerry’ booklet, published by Kerry County Council showcases and promotes the county’s parks, gardens and woodlands, including Killarney House and Gardens, where the launch took place on Tuesday. The new booklet, which provides information about, directions to, and images of many of the county’s parks, gardens and woodlands will be widely distributed and is an action in the County Kerry Tourism Strategy and Action Plan. Among the many amenities in the brochure are Ballyseedy Wood, Bonane Heritage Park, and Childers Park and Woodlands in Listowel as well as, gardens in Derrynane, Killarney, Milltown, Camp and Kenmare. The brochure was researched, designed and produced by the Tourism Unit of Kerry Council with the support of the Department of Rural and Community Development’s Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme.
It was launched by Minister of State, Brendan Griffin TD and the Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr Niall Kelleher. “Several actions contained in the County Kerry Tourism Strategy and Action Plan 2016-2022 emphasise the importance of continued promotion and marketing of niche tourism areas, products and attractions, such as gardens and woodlands, which have the potential to attract high spending visitors and addresses the challenges of seasonality and regionality,” Cathaoirleach, Cllr Kelleher said. “Our parks, gardens and woodlands are year-round attractions and offer the visitor an exceptional experience whatever the season.” Locations and contact details are included along with information such as opening hours and the key features of each of the attractions. The new brochure is available on kerrycoco.ie and will be distributed to tourist offices, accommodation providers and the gardens and woodlands amenities which feature.

Exciting times for music and dance Exciting developments at Killarney’s oldest music and dance school.
For 30 years it’s been at the heart of the community and now one of Killarney’s oldest music and dance schools has some exciting developments coming this September. Kerry School of Music (KSM) originally opened a dance school in Áras Pádraig in 1988, adding music classes in 1989. When that closed to facilitate transfer of ownership to Killarney Town Council, the school moved to Holy Cross
Mercy Primary School on New Road where they have been ever since. The dance classes later transferred to the Church of the Resurrection Parish Centre in Park Road. Such is the demand for ballet and modern, tap and jazz classes that two teachers - Colette Maguire Jensen and Tara Dore - teach packed classes on Tuesdays after school and all day Saturdays. Meanwhile back in Holy Cross there are many exciting developments coming this September, School of Music Director Aidan O’Carroll explained.

Second Cars and Coffee meet planned Organisers of last month’s inaugural Cars and Coffee Killarney were so impressed with the turnout for their first event that they have decided to run a second one this month. Over 100 cars turned out for the August meet at KC Print, a sister company of the Killarney Advertiser. The second event will take place at the same venue on Sunday, September 15 and will run from 10am to 11pm.
“All types of cars are welcome, new, old, standard, modified, classic, and project,” organiser Ger Neeson said. “This being Ireland - it might rain, but don't worry we will have an indoor area for people hang out in the dry.” It is organised by owner of KC Print, Cormac Casey, and Ger Neeson, who are both active members of the Killarney and District Motor Club. They were inspired to run Cars and Coffee in Killarney after attending similar events up and down the country.

Ireland’s only Ford Fair this weekend Ireland’s only car show dedicated to Fords will take place in Banna, Ardfert this weekend.
Cannonball run in Killarney this weekend Over 200 supercars are expected in Killarney later today (Friday) as the annual Cannonball Ireland Supercar Road Trip rolls into town. The three-day event got underway this morning from Malahide Castle in County Dublin. After stops in Fermoy and Ballymaloe, the first of the cars is expected at the Brehon Hotel around 6pm this evening. Fans will get a second chance to see the cars on the event’s second day as the Brehon also hosts the restart at 10am tomorrow (Saturday) morning. The cars will then make their way to Tralee with a scheduled fuel stop in the
Circle K filling station at 11am before heading for Sligo for the run’s second overnight halt. “Fans will meet the drivers and celebrities and get up close and personal with the world’s top mark cars, such as McLaren, Lamborghini, Ferrari, Aston Martin, Porsche, Maserati, Rolls Royce and Bentley,” said event founder Alan Bannon. “The benefit to the Irish economy and host towns of this event is estimated at €2,567,000 per year. Over 200,000 people will line the streets all over Ireland for Cannonball and the event has already raised €1,016,000 for Irish charities. This year, the charity benefactor is the Irish Cancer Society.”
Now in its second year, the only motoring festival celebrating all things Ford is bigger and better. Based at the popular Banna Beach Resort in the north of county and sponsored by local Ford dealers Kerry Motor Works, the two-day event will cater for all types of Blue Oval machinery from vintage and classic cars, modified and rally machinery and even tractors and modern Fords. The fair is the brainchild of local motorsport enthusiast and resident DJ at the Banna Beach Resort, Ray Stack. “Bring the family as we will have a funfilled line-up of entertainment for young and old all weekend,” Ray said. “Saturday evening, we will have a run starting at 4pm around the Ring of North Kerry taking in some of the most breath-taking views of the Wild Atlantic Way, stopping for photo ops along the way and having a stop in the car park across from The Marine Restaurant in Ballybunion after 5pm.”
This is followed by a BBQ at the Banna Beach Resort with music and dancing in O’Shea’s Bar until late. Sunday’s activities will feature static displays on the hotel grounds with plenty of additional family entertainment. “The line-up of cars is getting bigger and better, we have everything from a Model T to brand new cars, rally cars, and even dragsters,” added Ray. Public entry to the show is €5 and kids go free. Ford traders, specialists, exhibitors and auto jumblers can register to trade at the grounds by calling Ray on 086 8244424.

21ST ANNIVERSARY
O’SHEA
BECKETT
In loving memory of Con O’Shea, Late of Rookery Road, Killarney and Faungorth, Kenmare. Died on 10th September, 2018.
In loving memory of Martin Beckett, Late of Cluainín, Woodlawn Rd., Killarney, Who died on the 6th September, 1998.
On the first anniversary of the death of our beloved husband and father, we the family of Con would like to express our heartfelt thanks and appreciation to all those who sympathised with us, called to our house, attended the rosary, removal, funeral mass and burial. We would also like to thank those who travelled long distances to attend the removal and mass, and the many who sent mass cards and letters of sympathy. Also thank you to those who made a donation to the Irish Guide Dogs, a charity very close to Con’s heart.
Somewhere beyond the sunset, Where loved ones never die, You sleep in a beautiful garden, Beneath a golden sky, You are always in our thoughts, And forever in our hearts.
We would like to extend special thanks to all those present on the day Con died – the emergency services and first responders, Dr Gary Stack, the workmen present at the time, and most especially our kind neighbours. Thanks also to our extended family and to our work colleagues for their support and understanding at a difficult time, and to Con’s many friends for their continued support. We would especially like to thank Fr Niall Howard for his beautiful celebration of the funeral mass, the musicians and all those who helped make it such a meaningful ceremony. Also many thanks to O’Shea’s Funeral Directors for their professionalism, guidance and kindness. Finally, a special thanks to all our extended family, our neighbours and our friends for their ongoing support. As it would be impossible to thank everyone individually, please accept this acknowledgement as a token of our gratitude. Mass will be offered for your intentions. In loving memory of Margaret “Dolly” O’Sullivan, Late of 38 Park Drive, Killarney, Who passed away on the 8th of September 2018. Each morning when we awake, We know that you are gone, And no one knows the heartache, As we try to carry on. Our hearts still ache with sadness, And many tears still flow, What it meant to lose you, No one will ever know. Our thoughts are always with you, Your place no one can fill, In life we loved you dearly, In death we love you still. There will always be a heartache, And often a silent tear, But always a precious memory, Of the days when you were here. If tears could make a staircase, And heartaches make a lane, We’d walk the path to Heaven, And bring you home again. We hold you close within our hearts, And there you shall remain, To walk with us throughout our lives, Until we meet again. Our family chain is broken now, And nothing will be the same, But as God calls us one by one, The chain will link again. Loved and remembered by your daughters Mary and Helen and all your family and friends. Anniversary Mass will be held in The Church of the Resurrection at 9.30am on Monday the 9th of September.

Killarney’s No. 1 for GAA Coverage
Replay awaits Kerry and Dublin after thrilling final for the ages How did we survive last Sunday’s game? I’m not talking about the Kerry team. I’m talking about every Kerry person in Croke Park and the ones watching at home or over in Australian or the States or in the back arse of nowhere on one of those dodgy streams that cut out as soon as someone takes a shot. Has there been a more anxious, more heart-stopping, more emotionally draining All-Ireland final in the history of Gaelic football? Kerry’s hard-fought draw with the five-in-a-row-chasing Dubs will go down as one of the all-time classics. I’m not even sure it could be classed as enjoyable; as good as the game was, it was actually too stressful. Personally, I’ve never experienced such unbearable tension at a Kerry game, or at any other sporting event for that matter. Those final 10 minutes or so were panic inducing. If I had a million euro riding on it I don’t think I could have been more nervous. I’m not sure why I find myself so emotionally attached to this Kerry team. I don’t remember being like this in 2015 or 2011 or any other year. Maybe it’s because no one gave them a chance. Maybe it’s because I want them to stop Dublin so badly. Maybe it’s the courage and determination they’ve shown all year. Or maybe I’m just getting sentimental in my old age. Whatever the reasons, I was a wreck watching that game the last day, and I’m sure all of you were the same. The replay, on September 14 at 6pm, should come with a health warning.
GOUGH
I think referee David Gough deserves a huge amount of credit for his performance in what was his first ever All-Ireland final. The pressure on him heading into this match was immense but he got the majority of the calls right. The penalty was a bit soft alright… I’ll put it this way: I don’t think David Clif-

ford would have made much noise if it wasn’t given. But he was spot on with Jonny Cooper’s red card and I was shocked to learn that two of the experts on our national broadcaster’s flagship sports programme felt otherwise. (See p65 for more reaction to The Sunday Game’s coverage of the final). Dublin felt that Tom O’Sullivan should have followed Cooper down the tunnel in the second half and my initial reaction was that he was in big trouble. Seeing the incident back, though, there wasn’t really that much in it.
THE SEÁNIE SHOW
As Clifford and Paul Geaney struggled a bit to find their rhythm, it was up to Seán O’Shea to do the bulk of the scoring. He didn’t disappoint. The 21-year-old had 10 shots on goal and nailed all 10 (four frees, three 45s and three from play) in a remarkable display as he picked up the GAA Performance of the Week award for what seems like the 50th time this season. He is just so reliable from placed balls and when he chips in with big scores from open play like he did the last day, he is unquestionably one of Kerry’s most important players.

Kerry survive rocky finish to earn All-Ireland replay ALL-IRELAND SENIOR FOOTBALL FINAL _________________________________________________________________________
Dublin
1-16 | Kerry 1-16
CROKE PARK
Dublin forward Dean Rock missed a last-gasp free from a difficult angle as Kerry held on for a an incredible draw in Sunday’s All-Ireland senior football final in Croke Park. The Dubs, who are searching for an unprecedented fifth All-Ireland title in a row, led at half-time but a red card for Jonny Cooper just before the interval proved crucial as Kerry fought back to take the lead down the stretch. The champions persevered despite their numerical disadvantage and when Rock swung over a huge score from play in the 74th minute, the sides were level. There was still time for the Ballymun Kickhams player to win it at the death but his kick from the left sideline dropped just wide and The Kingdom survived to fight another day.
GOAL CHANCES
Kerry forward Paul Geaney had a great opportunity to kickstart the underdogs’ afternoon with just six minutes on the clock but his goalbound effort was cleared off the line by the knees of James McCarthy. David Clifford got off the mark in the 11th minute and his side were handed a golden opportunity just moments later
when Jonny Cooper grappled with the Fossa youngster in the area and referee David Gough signalled for a penalty. Geaney accepted the responsibility but, to the dismay of Kerry manager Peter Keane, his high shot was emphatically batted away by veteran Dublin goalkeeper Stephen Cluxton. Television replays later showed that Cluxton was well off his line when the ball was struck, an infringement that should have led to the penalty being retaken. The boys in blue took a stranglehold of the game in the 19th minute when the irrepressible Jack McCaffrey sprinted forward from the back and drilled a low shot past Shane Ryan in the Kerry goal. Dublin were in the ascendency now but there was a twist in the first-half tale when Cooper picked up his second yellow for persistent fouling. Kerry went in four points down at the break but, crucially, they were now one man up.
WALSH’S ARRIVAL
Kerry tried to make use of their extra player but the Leinster champions kept them at arm’s length throughout the third quarter. Then came Tommy Walsh.
Walsh was immense as Kerry clawed their way back into contention, setting up 1-1 and scoring a point himself in another swashbuckling display. It was his pass that set up fellow substitute Killian Spillane for Kerry’s only goal, though Spillane deserves the bulk of the credit for his incisive run and pinpoint finish. Deadeye centre forward Seán O’Shea, one of 11 Kerry players starting in their first ever All-Ireland final, equalised soon after before Rock edged Dublin ahead with a 64th-minute free. O’Shea found the target to level matters once again and Spillane curled over a beauty to give Kerry the lead with just four minutes to play. Rock tied things up in additional time and the county of Kerry breathed a collective sigh of relief when his kick from the sideline, the last act of the match, sailed narrowly wide on the near side.

KERRY: Ryan; Foley, O’Sullivan, Morley; Murphy, Crowley 0-1, Ó Beaglaoich; Moran, A Spillane, Barry; White; O’Shea 0-10 (4f, 3 ‘45s), O’Brien 0-1; Geaney, Clifford 0-2. REPLAY
So we must go through it all again. The build-up, the scramble for tickets, the trip up to Dublin, and the excruciating drama of another Kerry versus Dublin decider. On Sunday, a lot of people said that we left it after us (and by ‘a lot’ I mean every single person I bumped into) but there are so many positives to be taken from that match. Right from the off, well before the red card, Peter Keane’s team posed Dublin some real problems. And think about it this way: this time last week Kerry had a squad filled with players who had no experience of playing in an All-Ireland final. Now they know what to expect. And, crucially, they know they’re well capable of rattling the champs.

“The performance wasn’t good enough today to get the result. We’ve got the opportunity now to rectify that in two weeks’ time.” • Gavin's immediate reaction to the match “We didn’t get the rub of the green in that regard. But listen, that happens in games. Sometimes you get those calls and sometimes you don’t… Both players were grappling. In the second half, there were one or two calls which could have went our way. They didn’t, so you just have to dust yourself down and go again.” • On Jonny Cooper’s sending off “I thought he (Cooper) was doing okay. David Clifford is a fantastic player, so we have no issue with Jonny.” • On Cooper struggling against Clifford
Killarney’s No. 1 for GAA Coverage
“There seemed to be (pressure) from the outside but David Gough is one of the top officials in the game. I don’t think it would have phased him.” • On the pressure on referee David Gough “No.” •W hen pressed again about whether or not he was disappointed
that he didn’t take Cooper off of Clifford earlier
“We have a resilient football team. A point down with 72 minutes on the clock, the perception might have been that the game was going away from them. But all credit to the Dublin players. They tackled and kept their discipline and turned Kerry over and created more opportunities for themselves.” • On Dublin fighting back with 14 men “No, he wasn’t injured. Brian put a serious shift in there this afternoon. He can be happy with his performance. He worked really hard for the team and gave it everything. He had no more to give.” • On Brian Howard being substituted “It opens up again. We’ve got a very strong squad and there will be lots of players hungry to get on the squad and get game time.” •O n the players who didn’t make the 26 coming back into
contention for the replay
“It might be on yours, if you’re saying it. But from our perspective, every day that we go out it’s about trying to perform to the best of your ability." • On the Drive for Five still being on everyone’s mind

“Did we think we had a chance coming here today? Sure of course. If you’ve two dogs in any race, sure one of the dogs might get a heart attack and the other fella will walk home.” • On Kerry backing themselves “While ye might read a lot into yerselves, we wouldn’t read a lot into what ye’re thinking.” • On Kerry being written off by the media before the final “I wouldn’t say it was an opportunity missed. At the end of the day, we weren’t in an All-Ireland final since 2015 and we’ve a young team. Sure what were they going to get only experience out of the game? There’s a learning curve and this is only helping it.” • On whether it was on opportunity missed “I think we got a good bounce out of our subs today and Tommy was one of those guys. What did he do? He had two shots, he scored one, missed one, but he set up another one, so he had a good day, yeah.” • On the impact of Tommy Walsh “I’ll tell you, he used two of them today.” •O n the amount of pairs of boots Shane Ryan needed.
Keane previously joked that Ryan would need more boots because they would be worn out from taking so many kickouts against Dublin
“At the end of the day, you’re a Kerry player, you’re kicking ball against a gable of a wall since you’re knee-high. You want to play on days like this. You feel you’re born for this, to get up to Croke Park.” • On whether or not Kerry used Dublin’s Drive for Five as motivation “Paul was the penalty taker. You score penalties, you miss penalties. It is what it is.” • On Paul Geaney taking (and missing) Kerry’s penalty “I can’t comment. I don’t know.” • On Stephen O’Brien’s penalty claim “Of course they will (be favourites). They’ve won four All-Irelands on the bounce. Were they going for seven in the last nine years today? They didn’t get those All-Irelands in a lucky bag.” • On Dublin being favourites for the replay

BROLLY: This is a free out. CANTWELL: Does he hold his arm? WHELAN: I don’t think he does.
BROLLY: This is a free out. Clifford manoeuvres his body around to keep him off him. Cooper tries to get around to get at the ball and instead of it being a free out, it’s a free in. CANTWELL: He (Cooper) is holding his arm there. BROLLY AND WHELAN: No, no, no… BROLLY: Never in a million years. WHELAN: It’s just two lads coming together, going for a ball. Simple as that. SPILLANE: I think anyone knows that I’ll call something exactly as I see it, and I’m not wearing a Kerry cap. In that incident, what Clifford did for that second booking… Clifford used his body to shield the ball and what happened was Jonny Cooper grabbed him by the arm
and pulled him down. It’s a yellow card. Two yellows equal red. He had to go.
hold the arm of David Clifford in that incident?
BROLLY AND WHELAN: No, no, no…
WHELAN: I think he’s going in for the ball, Joanne…
SPILLANE: They’re the facts. WHELAN: No way. That’s a terrible decision. BROLLY: The referee must clearly have been influenced by the propaganda that has been coming from Kerry. I am so surprised because David (Gough) is so clear-minded… Clifford knows he’s on a yellow, he’s holding him off, he’s blocking him off the play. SPILLANE: He’s not! BROLLY: Hold on, Patrick. We confidently expected that it was a free out. In fact, I think you thought that as well, Joanne. People were shocked when all of a sudden a yellow card was administered. JOANNE: Ciarán, the sending off is for persistent fouling, that is one foul you’re seeing there. BROLLY: That’s not a foul. That’s a free out. WHELAN: The way I look at it, I actually don’t think it’s even a foul. I think it’s two guys going for the ball… That’s a ‘play on’ in my opinion… But listen, we’re all going to be biased. Pat’s going to be biased to Kerry. I’m going be biased to Dublin. That’s the way we are. That’s our make-ups. SPILLANE: Ciarán, I’m not going to be biased! I’ve never been biased to Kerry. I call something exactly as I see it. *** CANTWELL: Ciarán, a straightforward question: does Cooper, or does he not,
CANTWELL: But does he hold his arm? WHELAN: No, I don’t think he does. I don’t think he does. There are two possibilities here: either Whelan genuinely didn’t see Cooper’s foul, which raises doubts about his ability to read a game a football, or he did see the foul but he didn’t call it straight, which raises doubts about his impartiality. Whelan doubled down on his controversial comments in his column in Monday’s Herald, before backing down later that day on the Independent.ie’s GAA podcast. Referee David Gough was “technically right” to send Cooper off, the ex-Dublin player eventually admitted. I’m not sure how he reached that conclusion all of a sudden. It’s not like he didn’t get enough looks at it on the Sunday. Brolly, meanwhile, doesn’t really warrant too much discussion by this point. Like Eamonn Dunphy before him, he jumped the shark a long time ago with his deliberately contrarian contributions. But look, I’m sure RTÉ are more than happy to let him rant away, knowing full well that he’ll rile enough people to keep #TheSundayGame trending on Twitter. After last weekend’s showing by both Brolly and Whelan, I wouldn’t be surprised if a large number of previously loyal viewers switched over to Sky Sports for the replay.

All-Ireland Senior Football Final 2019: Dublin 1-16 • Kerry 1-16
Joe Brolly and Ciarán Whelan have been roundly criticised for their bizarre half-time analysis, and rightly so says Adam Moynihan
Sunday Game pundits Joe Brolly and Ciarán Whelan have faced widespread condemnation after their frankly bizarre half-time analysis of last Sunday’s All-Ireland senior football final between Kerry and Dublin. Despite being presented with fairly conclusive video evidence to the contrary, the pair somehow asserted that Dublin defender Jonny Cooper should not have received a second yellow card for his 35th-minute challenge on David Clifford (pictured below). Presenter Joanne Cantwell and former Kerry player Pat Spillane tried to point out Cooper’s infraction but the Dubliner and the Derryman were having none of it. Even those of us who were at the game had heard all about the remarkable exchange by the time we left Croke Park. Here it is in all its folly.

Nothing to separate the country’s two best teams
Killarney’s No. 1 for GAA Coverage
Former Kerry and Dr Crokes goalkeeper Eamonn Fitzgerald gives his take on Sunday’s All-Ireland final Kerry and Dublin played out a thrilling draw in the All-Ireland senior football final in Croke Parke last Sunday and there was nothing to separate the two best teams in the country. Dublin did have one last gasp chance in the 78th minute when they were awarded a sideline free. Dean Rock, who had scored 10 points prior to this, was entrusted with this shot from a very acute angle and he pulled it to the left and wide, sending the contest to a replay. Dublin were red hot favourites to win an historic five-in-a-row as Kerry are a very young side with an average age of 21. In the end, a draw was a fair result and it will earn the GAA an estimated €4 million.
14 MEN
Dublin had to play the full second half with 14 men. Jonny Cooper was sent off in the 35th minute, just before halftime. He had a horrid time against David Clifford, conceding a penalty and picking up two yellow cards.
WE'LL MEET AGAIN: Jack McCaffrey speaks to David Moran at the full-time whistle. McCaffrey was named RTÉ's Man of the Match while Moran got the nod from Sky Sports. Pic: Harry Murphy/Sportsfile.
It did not seem to phase Dublin as they held a four-point lead coming up to the break. Dublin led by 1-14 to 0-12 in the 55th minute. Did Kerry make full use of the extra man? Not really as Paul Murphy continued his role as sweeper for the full game. Kerry’s Seán O’Shea was their brightest star scoring 10 points, which included four frees and three 45s. He was also excellent in general play. Goals were going to win this game and each side scored just one. Jack McCaffrey got an early goal in the 18th minute which put his side in the ascendancy. Shane Ryan made two good saves while at the other end Stephen Cluxton stopped Paul Geaney’s penalty. Kerry had to wait for Killian Spillane to weave his way through the Dublin defence in the second half and this was a real morale booster that brought Kerry right back into contention.
RATINGS
Shane Ryan played well and had mixed luck with his efforts to get the ball out
to a Kerry player. He also saved two goalbound shots. Overall the Kerry defence did well against the much-vaunted Dublin forwards. Jason Foley was the weakest link. He found Dean Rock a real handful. Tom O’Sullivan was frequently in trouble; he got a yellow card and was lucky not to get a second one but the referee left him off with a caution. Tadhg Morley performed well on Paul Mannion and Gavin Crowley did a great marking job on Ciarán Kilkenny, holding him scoreless. Paul Murphy was constantly on the ball as a sweeper and was very unlucky not to have scored a second goal. Brian Ó Beaglaoich did well on Niall Scully until he was replaced by Tommy Walsh in the 53rd minute. Walsh gave a great lift to the forwards when he came on. Jack Barry worked out very well and I was glad to see he was in from the start. He has been out with injury for a long time so this game will bring him on a lot. As expected, David Moran put in a great shift and dominated the midfield area. His fielding was first class and the Dublin duo of Brian Fenton and Michael Darragh MacAuley lost this battle to the Kerrymen.
Gavin White was given the task of marking Jack McCaffrey, who was my Man of the Match. He scored 1-3 and was involved in several Dublin attacks. White is a great wing back so it is hard to expect him to succeed in an offensive role. He was called ashore in the 49th to be replaced by Jack Sherwood. Seán O’Shea was brilliant scoring 10 points in a superb overall performance. Stephen O’Brien was targeted and was double-marked but he did manage a few of those lung-bursting runs. He was very unlucky in the first half when he worked his way through the Dublin defence and his shot nearly caught Cluxton, but it went over the bar. David Clifford had six shots at goal despite being fouled so often, especially by Johnny Cooper. He earned his frees (which were converted by Seán O’Shea) and kicked two good points. Paul Geaney had a frustrating game. He kicked no scores and failed to convert a penalty. The best of the Dublin players were Stephen Cluxton, Jack McCaffrey, Brian Howard and Dean Rock.

Lee took gold in the high jump after going clear at 1.92m (his international personal best) against all of the competition he is likely to face later in the year. The Killarney Valley Athletic Club member, who was born with one arm (Amniotic Band Syndrome), competes in the T47 category for those with amputations below the elbow. He is coached by fellow Killarney man Tomás Griffin. The 2018 European Para Athletics
Championship bronze medalist will now join the Irish team at the World Championships in Dubai between November 7 and 15. “Overall, I’m happy with the way I performed today [last Friday], clearing all my jumps first time up until 1.98, but I’m still a small bit disappointed not to jump a new European record of 1.98,” Lee said. “I can feel it in my body that it’s there now. It’s just a matter of time. THE POWER OF ADVERTISING “Top Team Painters Ltd specialise in domestic and commercial painting and decorating services. We opened up our first spraying booth in Kenmare spraying kitchens and furniture, bringing new life and colour to dull tired cabinetry. We needed to reach our audience and were introduced to the team at Killarney Advertiser. Without this collaboration, we would not be so busy and we cannot thank the team of the Killarney Advertiser enough for their ongoing help and support. It’s a wonderful magazine and it is also used as a directory for trades and services so we appreciate its popularity to the County. Now our second booth is up and running due to popular demand, we look forward to keeping in touch with our customers and potential customers here with this very successful publication”.
“We are delighted to be in partnership with the Killarney Advertiser for over 20 years. With their professionalism they help us promote our services and offers in store to the people of Killarney and surrounding area. Every Friday people call to Daly’s Supervalu to collect their copy of the Killarney Advertiser, a must have in every home.”
