Furious Killarney publicans say they are almost at breaking point following the Government’s decision this week to further delay the reopening of pubs. | By Sean Moriarty Tuesday’s announcement means that pubs that do not serve food will have to wait until August 31 - at the very least before the can start trading again. They have been closed since March 16 as a result of pandemic related regulations. There are 90 licensed premises in Killarney – including hotels and restaurants – and all but 12 of them have opened since June 29. Some Killarney bar owners fear they won’t be allowed open at all this year while others are concerned about the future of their businesses and staff. They are angry that the Government
waits until the last minute to announce plans that they believe were finalised weeks ago. Gavin O’Donoghue and his family who run the Speakeasy Bar on High Street say that they "are anxious and frustrated”. “We are being kicked down the road and we do not know where we stand,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. O’Donoghue is calling for more clarity and honesty from the Government so he can plan ahead. He believes Tuesday’s decision was set in stone once confirmed cases of Coronavirus started to increase again from the middle of

last week, and would have preferred if the Government made their announcement ahead of the long weekend instead of keeping publicans in the dark. The Government has stated that its priority is to reopen schools and colleges later this month and that this is a warning shot to publicans who are preparing to open on the latest proposed dates of August 31. “There is no way they are going to allow the pubs and schools open at the same time, so why not be honest with us and say that now,” he added. “The stress and the mental health issues this is causing is frightening.” His mother Mary said: “We are being very badly treated. The Government is going to have to step up. It is our livelihood and the way we are being treated is appalling.” Siobhan Linehan, a third-generation publican, runs Dan Linehan’s Bar on College St which was founded by her grandfather. She is also concerned by the timings of Government announcements and even if pubs were given the go ahead to reopen next Monday there are no directives available to publicans in terms of new procedures. “It is very hard to make a decision when we are being drip-fed information,” she told the Killarney Advertiser. Both publicans say they deserve a chance to reopen, even if there are stricter regulations. “We are not being given opportunities to run our businesses,” added Siobhan. “We are professionals, we are going
to do everything right, too much else hinges on what we do.” “Even with reduced capacity and set opening and closing times, it can be done,” added Gavin. The Government said the reason for delaying the reopening of pubs was due to an increase of COVID-19 cases in the last two weeks but neither publican is buying that. The publicans say further delays in opening of pubs will lead to additional house parties and illegal gatherings including some reported ‘shebeens’. “The number of cases are increasing yet the pubs remain closed; it is almost like we are at fault even though we are not opened,” added Siobhan. Offering food is not an option for either. “We moved our business model away from food 12 years ago, we sell pints and conversation. My customers are not here for food – they will have eaten at home before going out for a few drinks.” “If we open to sell food we risk running at a loss, but do we open now and close down for good real soon, or do we stay closed now and close down for good much later – we can’t win. “ Gavin said there are too many restaurants in Killarney already and that offering food at the Speakeasy simply could not work. “There are certain places for certain things – our bar is not a place for a fine steak meal – and some of my customers come to me because we don’t do food. They do not like the smell of food while they are having a drink,” he said.

Landmark 150th celebration on hold The 150th anniversary celebration of a popular Killarney pub has been put on hold as a result of the extension of the Government’s pub closure order. | By Sean Moriarty Hussey’s Bar on High Street was first opened in 1870 and its current owner Geraldine Hussey, the great-granddaughter of the pub’s founders, was hopeful she could mark the occasion in a special way during the summer. Her hopes were dashed on Tuesday evening when the Government announced plans to extend its pub closing order until at least August 31. Hussey’s Bar closed on March 15, days before the Government’s COVID-19 lockdown. “I am a fourth generation bar owner and I am celebrating 50 years of pulling pints this year,” Geraldine told the Killarney Advertiser. “We were all set
to celebrate this year but it looks like it will have to wait until next year. I have family in Australia too and they are finding it difficult to travel. I would not want to have it without them.” Geraldine is in the process of refurbishing her landmark bar on High St ahead of a potential reopening date in late August. These include the removal of a dividing wall between the existing bar and a private room in the house to allow for extra space in line with social distancing regulations. The work was not going to be completed before August 10, the initial proposed reopening date, but it will be completed in time for the new date at the end of the month, assuming she is given the green light to reopen.
High level of compliance in Killarney pubs Killarney Gardai are reporting a high level of compliance amongst pub owners since those that serve food were allowed reopen after pandemic restrictions were eased on June 29. Since that date pubs have been allowed to serve alcohol to customers who order a ‘substantial meal’, but non-food serving pubs this week learned that they have to remain closed for at least another three weeks. There are restrictions too on the length of a time a customer can stay at the
premises and the amount of people allowed in at anyone time. Last weekend’s Bank Holiday weekend was particularly busy in Killarney. Local Gardai carried out spot checks on several premises but reported a high-level of compliance. “There was a lot of enforcement and monitoring over the weekend but there is a high level of compliance in Killarney,” Superintendent Flor Murphy told the Killarney Advertiser. Local Gardai also reported a much quieter Bank Holiday weekend in terms of public order offences.
Tributes have been paid to Dr Crokes and Killarney Celtic stalwart Harry Bartlett who died suddenly on Wednesday morning. Mr Bartlett (60), from Woodlawn Park and late of Marian Terrace, was a longtime volunteer with both Killarney sports clubs. He was also a volunteer at Fitzgerald Stadium and rowed competitively for the Workman’s Rowing Club. Harry’s dedication to Dr Crokes was recognised earlier this year when he was named as the club’s Supporter of the Year – an award he shared with his wife Ann. His was a former Dr Crokes player, served on the club’s management committee and was a very active referee with the club. “We are stunned and saddened with the news,” Dr Croke’s PRO John Keogh told the Killarney Advertiser. “He was always on call for whatever task that needed doing within the club and was willing to perform any task requested of him. He was an exemplary clubman who did an awful lot behind the scenes.” His role with Killarney Celtic covered everything from being a star player, a title-wining manager and a senior committee member having formally served as Club Chairman. “He had the reputation of being a hard tackling defender and brought that into management. Everyone loved to play for him,” club PRO Padraig Harnett said. “The club offers its condolences to his

Harry is survived by his wife Ann (nee Corkery, Killorglin), his daughters Christina, Sandra, and Chloe, and son John. In accordance with Government and HSE guidelines and in the interest of public health a private funeral will take place for Harry on Monday morning in St Mary’s Cathedral. Emergency services rescue kayakers Emergency services came to the aid of three kayakers near Ross Castle on Tuesday afternoon after they ran into difficulty due to rough waters. The alarm was raised just before 4.30pm. Fire service, ambulance and
the rescue helicopter were mobilised to the incident at the Coppermines. Gardai had managed to get coordinates of the kayakers which was near the lake shore and they quickly pulled them to safety. They were then medically assessed by ambulance and fire service personnel.

SKYDIVE: Stephanie Horan and Marie O'Sullivan are taking part in a skydive for Recovery Haven Kerry this Sunday as part of the charity's 10 year anniversary. Photo: Michelle Crean
The sky's the limit this Sunday! This coming Sunday three women are hoping that it'll be third time lucky to complete a nerve wracking sky dive from 13,000 feet. | By Michelle Crean The original date was set in March but due to Storm Jorge it was cancelled. Then, as they built up the
nerves once again - Coronavirus put a stop to their high flying plans. Now, it's all weather dependent, but Marie O'Sullivan who is a Slimming
World consultant in Killarney, Stephanie Horan a teacher in St Brigid’s Killarney, and Lauren Fitzell are hoping to jump for Recovery Haven Kerry as part of the charity's 10 year anniversary. "It's third time lucky for the three of us to finally get to jump for Recovery Haven Kerry," Marie told the Killarney Advertiser this week.
"The leap for recovery was initially to fall on leap day in February but so many volunteered that it was spread out over two weekends. "Storm after storm hampered the jumps for each group and by the time we were rescheduled to jump in April the country was on lockdown." For Marie, a skydive was always something she dreamed of doing. "It was always something on my to do list, a bit of a thrill, rush of excitement but at over 16 stone there was no chance I'd ever have even entertained the idea. After losing weight with Slimming World and getting my love of life and confidence back I decided this was my time to tick it off the list. The year itself is poignant for me as my mom Breeda Hickey died from cancer at only 42 years old. I was aged just 11-years-old and that's when my weight started to go up." Marie joined Slimming World four years ago and got her life back. Now I'm 42, so as a way of raising money and awareness of Recovery Haven cancer support and in memory of mom I've roped in Lauren Fitzell and Stephanie Horan to also take the plunge. We've raised over €5,000 between us and this coming weekend we will jump 13,000 feet to support and acknowledge everyone using the fantastic resources of Recovery Haven Kerry."
Nature inspired Danny's latest work Sheep and Red deer are a great source of inspiration for local artist Danny Lyne who draws his inspiration for his latest exhibition of paintings on nearby Mangerton Mountain. His latest exhibition features in Bricín craft shop and restaurant on High Street for the entire month of August. Danny grew up on the shores of Muckross Lake in Killarney, where he lived during his childhood at Torc Cottages in the National Park. Danny is a self-taught artist, painting since he was a child at primary school level, where he was lucky enough to encounter an artistic teacher who, on recognising his talent, introduced him to mixing colours and obtained for him his very first set of artist quality paints. Growing up in the National Park had a huge influence on the development of Danny’s work. “The subtleties of the varying light and changing seasons impressed upon the
textures of the natural world fascinate me. The cycles of nature, like the return of salmon every year and the seasonally changing behaviour of the deer in the woods and mountains are a constant source of inspiration," he said. Today, Danny continues to live and work in his beloved Killarney, at the foot of Mangerton mountain. “The medium of oil paints lends itself beautifully to his constant compulsion to capture the varying temperatures of colour in the patterns and nuances of nature." Being self-taught, Danny’s technique is fluid, and this helps him to respond naturally to what he sees. Danny has won a number of awards, and his works hang in numerous countries throughout the world. His painting continues to evolve in response to his continued fascination with the visual world.

NEWS IN CONVERSATION 12
7.8.2020
Killarney Advertiser’s Michelle Crean is 'In Conversation' with local band Greywind who are taking the world by storm with their unique style of music.
Spotify streams hit 2m for local band Greywind Despite only being in the music scene for four years, the brother sister duo from Ballydribbeen have not only played at some of the world's leading festivals with big names on the music scene - but this week their album 'Afterthought' reached 2m streams on global music platform Spotify. It has been an amazing musical journey for siblings Paul (26) and Steph O'Sullivan (24) who accidently got some of the world's biggest music labels interested in their pop/rock/indie style music. With just 41 live concerts under their belt, they say that it's amazing that their music has hit 2m streams on the popular music channel - and that doesn't include the likes of YouTube, Apple Music or other platforms. Their sound has similar tones of American rock band Evanescence but is also described by many as indie and pop rock. And since their rise to fame they even have music fans travel to concerts from all over the world. According to Paul, some fans, including one in spotted in Killarney this week, even have a tattoo of the band's logo. "It's amazing and we still feel that we
still haven't even fully started yet. We've only ever played 41 live concerts in our entire lives and luckily those shows were some of the biggest festivals around the world."
THE BEGINNING
From a young age Paul and Steph had dreams of forming a band and hitting the big time. Never in their wildest dreams did they think that recording one song, also entitled 'Afterthought', four years ago that it would happen almost immediately. Next, is what dreams are made of. "Me and Steph always wanted to start a band and decided to travel to Belfast to a recording studio to go to a producer who could work with our sound," Paul, who went to The Sem, told the Killarney Advertiser. "We recorded our first ever single

'Afterthought' and decided to post it online. Almost immediately Universal Records, Sony, Emeli Sandé's management and Warner Brothers were all asking who our record label was. First we thought it was a joke as it was a rough recording we put online. We had all that interest which was crazy!" Then, one year to the day of posting the single online, they were flown to Texas to record their debut album. "Usually to get signed or get that interest you have to have a massive following and we did it with no connections to the music industry."
GROWING
They then did a UK tour and played in the Leeds and Reading Festivals. Their first debut headline show was in St Pancras Church in London which sold out, then it was onto the Rock Am Ring Music Festival which Paul described as "the Glastonbury of Germany". "Growing up MTV would have high-
Compassionate COVID carer set for Killarney treat | By Michelle Crean So moved by the gripping RTE Investigates 'Inside Ireland's COVID Battle' that one local guesthouse owner has offered one of the carers a three night stay next weekend. Ciara Roche who runs Killaran House on Park Road was so heartbroken as she watched Lisa Connolly's compassion towards a patient named Patrick when the programme aired in June, that she
contacted her personally and invited her and her family to come to Killarney for a weekend away. And Ciara hasn't stopped there either as she reached out on Facebook asking local businesses to offer their services over the weekend also. So far, Lisa and her three sisters will enjoy a helicopter ride courtesy of Dermot Healy, a Jarvey ride with John Kearney to Ross Castle, free taxi service for the weekend from Killarney Hackney Cabs, hair and shellac nails by L&S Hair and
Beauty, dinner for four on Friday night in Rozzers Restaurant, and carvery lunch in town on Sunday. However, Ciara is now hoping that more businesses will come on board and offer a few more treats for the compassionate carer. "I was so moved by Lisa Connolly's compassion towards Patrick, that I contacted her and invited herself and her family to join us for a weekend away," Ciara told the Killarney Advertiser. "My mom passed away shortly before
lights of that festival and it was on both our bucket list to do before we die! Liam Gallagher played there too." They then played the Download Festival with acts like Aerosmith, and last year it was onto the Isle of Wright where Noel Gallagher played, before Greywind played the INEC with The Coronas last December. And although COVID hit this year, he says it didn't interfere with their work as they had planned to spend time writing and recording in the studio. They've also been holding live online gigs and took over the HotPress page online last week. Now, they're almost ready to release new material but he's slow to reveal any details just yet. All he will say is that they have recorded with a big named producer. "We recorded with producer Romesh Dodangodajust before lockdown when he was just back from the Grammys. We will be releasing new music this coming autumn."
lockdown and my heart was breaking watching the programme. Also at the beginning of lockdown I joined a group on Facebook supporting nurses and there were nurses sleeping in their cars. I always wanted to do something for someone and felt this was it. Now herself and her three sisters are staying with us from August 14 for three nights. I put up a post on Facebook asking if any other businesses would like to offer them something and have received a good response but I feel a lot more businesses would probably like to get involved and perhaps didn’t see the post. My main concern is meals for them. I'm hoping a few might offer lunch or dinner and also if there's any company who'd like to offer their services to showcase Killarney to them." NEW BOOKLET: Paudy O'Sullivan, Billy Mangan and Norann Moran of the Fossa Parish Pastoral Council with Fr Tom Looney at the launch of the parish's new booklet. Photo: Sean Moriarty
Fossa Parish publishes new history booklet Fossa Parish Pastoral Council has published a new booklet celebrating all the history of the parish and the Church of Christ Prince of Peace. The 18-page full colour booklet, jointly produced by Fr Tom Looney and council committee member Norann Moran, outlines the history and story of Fossa
parish by way of text, illustrations and photographs of the wonderful art and amazing features that dominate the church.
This parish directory lists the saints of Fossa and Innisfallen, the names of parish clergy since 1857, together with key parish committees and information regarding parish liturgies. While Norann put the whole book together, she refused to accept any credit for her work and praised Fr Tom for his contribution to both the parish and the
booklet. Wednesday of this week marked Fr Tom’s final day as parish priest as he moved from the pastoral home to his former family home on Park Road to begin his retirement after 51 years in the priesthood. “We get people from all over the world coming here to get married or visiting tourists and wanted to able to show them what the parish is all about,” Fr Tom told the Killarney Advertiser. Pastoral Council Chair Billy Mangan added the idea came from Fr Tom’s writings in the weekly newsletter. “We decided it would be nice to put it all together in a book.” The publication is available from the parish council by way of a donation.
No set completion date for Man arrested and charged Killarney’s new cinema following burglary at
Milltown farmyard
Killarney film buffs will have to wait another while before enjoying a trip to the movies.
Omniplex Cinemas has confirmed to the Killarney Advertiser that it cannot put a date on the opening of the new cinema on Park Road. Construction on the new cinema was suspended in March due to COVID-19 restrictions. The shell is now complete and internal fit out contracts have been signed. However, operator Omniplex Cinemas says its priority is getting its existing nationwide chain of cinemas reopened. Its Tralee branch opened in late June. “Work will recommence shortly,” Mark Anderson of Omniplex told the Killarney

At around 12 midday, the owner of the property arrived home to see two men loading farm machinery, taken from a shed, into their car. The two men abandoned their car and took off on foot. Killorglin Gardai immediately responded and carried out a patrol of the area. One of the men, aged in his 30s, was arrested a short distance away from the farmyard. The
second man is still being sought by Gardaí. The car was seized for a technical examination. The man who was arrested was detained at Killarney Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 and has since been charged. He is due to appear before the courts at a later date. HAPPY: Sarah Keating, Caoimhe Tucker and Darragh Tucker were happy to meet The Coronas at the INEC car park on Wednesday.
Fans thrilled to meet The Coronas Fans of one of Ireland's most wellknown bands were thrilled to get a chance to meet them in person on Wednesday evening when they stopped by for their ‘mini-tour with a twist’. The Coronas trio, made up of Danny O'Reilly, Conor Egan and Graham Knox, are currently unable to play gigs due to the restrictions, so they found an alternative way to promote their new album by touring around Ireland in an ice cream van. On Wednesday at 5pm, the band stopped off at the INEC car park where some of their most dedicated fans popped by and were delighted to chat to them in person. The group even had face masks branded with the cover of their new album 'True Love Waits' which was released on July 31 and even signed copies for their fans. "We can’t do any events, so we had to think about how we approach our promotion," Jim Lawless, the band's manager told the Killarney Advertiser. "We wanted to do something to engage with the fans in a safe and fun way." To celebrate the launch the band teamed up with their friends at Murphy’s Ice Cream and rented a Super Sprinkles ice-cream van, from which they signed copies of the album and gave away free pots of Murphy’s most popular flavour, Dingle Sea Salt. And of course, social distancing and hygiene measures were strictly observed at every stop along the tour. One fan, John Keating, was more than happy to meet them as they played a special request for him during the Special Olympics 2019, where John won gold in golf. "When we realised that we weren’t going to be able to promote the album like
before, we started thinking about different ideas to mark the launch," lead singer Danny said. "With no gigs, in-store signings or radio performances permitted, our manager had the idea that we get in an ice cream van and travel the country giving out free ice cream and selling the album! With everything that’s going on at the moment we thought it might add a tiny bit of positivity into the world and we can’t wait to get out and see some of our fans and friends around the country that we haven’t seen since before lockdown. There’s a long way to go before we beat this unfortunately named virus, but, remember, 'True Love Waits'." Sean Murphy of Murphy’s Ice Cream, said they were more than happy to help The Coronas celebrate their album launch. "Murphy’s are delighted to be partnering with another great Irish (music) producer! We collect salt water from the seas of Dingle, and make our own sea salt, which forms the basis of this uniquely Irish ice cream flavour and our top best seller, Dingle Sea Salt. We hope the band and their fans enjoy it." True Love Waits marks the start of what is now more than a new chapter in the career of one of Ireland’s biggest, bestloved bands, it’s more like a whole new book. A quartet for 13 years, last summer The Coronas became a trio when guitarist Dave McPhillips unexpectedly left. Dave’s departure forced the remaining band members to reconsider their way of writing, and so they collaborated with other writers leading to changes in song structures and instrumentation. All this helped to push The Coronas out of their comfort zone and resulted in an album that the band are immensely proud of and excited to share with their fans.
FANS: John Keating stops for a quick photo with The Coronas trio, Danny O'Reilly, Conor Egan and Graham Knox in the INEC car park on Wednesday.
SPECIAL MOMENT: It was a special moment when young Ava Henderson got to meet the band in the INEC car park on Wednesday.
DELIGHTED: Sadhbh Bryan was delighted when the band signed a copy of their new album 'True Love Waits'.

Killarney pays tribute to John Hume - 'father of the Irish peace process’ EXCLUSIVE
Local tributes have been paid to Nobel laureate and peacemaker John Hume, the ‘father of the Irish peace process’ who died earlier this week. | By Sean Moriarty Mr Hume, aged 83, died at his Donegal home on Monday and was laid to rest in St Eugene’s Cathedral in his home city on Wednesday. Born in Derry/Londonderry, John Hume was the second leader of the Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP) from 1979 to 2001. He served as a member of the European Parliament and a member of the UK parliament, as well as a member of the Northern Ireland Assembly. Regarded as one of the most important figures in the recent political history of Ireland he was one of the architects of the Northern Ireland peace process. The co-recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize with Ulster Unionist Party leader David Trimble in 1998, Hume was also recognised with the Gandhi Peace Prize and the Martin Luther King Award - the only recipient of all three major peace awards. In 2010, he was named 'Ireland's Greatest' in a public poll by RTÉ. Local priest Fr Tom Looney has fond memories of Hume. They both attended Maynooth University and graduated on the same day in 1958. They both studied under Fr Tomas O’Fiaich who later became The Cardinal of All Ireland. Later in his career Fr Tom was appointed parish priest in Wembley, London where Hume’s nephew become one of his alter servers. Fr Tom is synonymous with the Church of Christ, The Prince of Peace Church in Fossa which was officially opened in June 1977 at the height of The Troubles in Northern Ireland. The church’s name was chosen as a mark
of hope that peace could be achieved in Northern Ireland and the Fossa Parish Pastoral Council purposely employed Derry-based architect Liam McCormick to design the building. Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser on Wednesday morning, the day of Hume’s funeral, Fr Tom recalled the great man. “We graduated on the same day and I always followed his life with great interest. John Hume wanted peace in Northern Ireland, and here we are standing in the Church of Christ, the Prince of Peace – a place of prayer for peace - on the day of his funeral,” Fr Tom said. “I was glad to meet him again on his visit to Tralee.” Hume was the guest speaker at the Labour Party’s National Conference which was held in the Brandon Hotel in Tralee in 1999. Current Councillor Michael Gleeson met John Hume in 2000 when he came to North Cork to celebrate the life of Ballydesmond native Nora Herlihy who was one of the founders of the Irish Credit Union.
ADVOCATE
Although best remembered for political roles, Hume was also a firm advocate of the Credit Union movement. He was a founding member of the Derry branch and was appointed the youngest ever president of the Irish League of Credit Unions, at the age of 27. At the time Hume was honoured with a civic reception by Killarney Town Council in recognition of his trojan work in both the political life of Northern Ireland and with the Credit Union movement. “I met him in Rathmore during that visit. We spoke firstly about a former neigh-

bour of mine and former Spa football colleague, who worked with John for a short while in a Derry College,” Mr Gleeson told the Killarney Advertiser. “We obviously spoke of the great movement that is the Credit Union in which I have a great interest in. John was, from the words he spoke at the Civic Reception and in private in Rathmore, deeply committed to the overall betterment of ordinary people in their daily existence. There were no airs or graces about him. An ordinary person trying to do ordinary deeds extraordinarily well. He had courage, commitment, great honesty and the lack of the insidious plague of bitterness.”

Sean Counihan was the Mayor of Killarney at that time. The Civic Reception took place in The Park Hotel and the former councillor remembered the occasion this week. “John Hume was a visionary, a peacemaker and community activist who saw

Healy-Rae supports Killarney Advertiser’s bypass campaign | By Sean Moriarty Kerry TD Michael Healy-Rae has made representations to central Government regarding the next step in the ongoing Killarney bypass delay. The Deputy believes the time is right for the Government to invest in large-scale capital projects like the long awaited Kil-
larney relief road. Last week, the Killarney Advertiser ran an in-depth feature on how the bypass project in Killarney is lagging behind compared to other major road plans in the region. As reported last week, both the Listowel and Macroom bypass projects are under construction while in County Limerick, both the Adare and Abbeyfeale relief road are at advanced planning stages.
The Killarney bypass, first mooted in 2004, has been on the long finger since the economic crash of 2009. A Killarney Advertiser campaign is calling for the project to be fast-tracked and Deputy Healy-Rae picked up on this after reading last week’s issue. As the country comes to terms with the economic fallout of the pandemic HealyRae has called on central Government to invest in major projects like the Killarney
working people suffer during The Troubles. In my view John Hume was one of the great people of this country. He strived for social justice for his people and was one of the great people of Ireland,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “To his wife Pat, who was always by his side, it was my pleasure on behalf of the people of Killarney to have had the opportunity, with my council colleagues, to have afforded you Killarney’s highest honour.” The Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr Patrick Connor Scarteen this week opened an online Book of Condolences. Cllr Connor-Scarteen said that John Hume made an immense contribution to peace on the island of Ireland and that he was pleased to afford the people of Kerry the opportunity to express their sympathies and share their messages on Mr Hume at this sad time. The online Book of Condolences can be accessed via the Kerry County Council website, www.kerrycoco.ie. bypass. “The bypass for the bypass as I call it - we need this more than ever. Rather than a programme for unemployment, nobody wants handouts, the Government need to invest in major capital problems like this,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “I brought this issue straight into the heart of central Government. We won’t be doing a whole pile of listening to the Greens, they would have us all on bicycles if they had their way. We need our cars, it is a price we have to pay by living in the countryside. The time is right, contractors are ready to work, they will offer favourable rates and we need these roads and we need to get people moving.”

Should pubs be allowed to reopen? That's the question the Killarney Advertiser posed to our readers this week. Grigoriy Geniyevskiy was out and about asking your views after the Government announced on Tuesday evening that pubs won't be reopening as Phase 4 of the Reopening Ireland plan has been delayed due to concerns that COVID cases are on the rise. Here's what you had to say: PATRICK CARROLL
JACK FLANNERY
JESSICA MURPHY
“They should be allowed open up with proper social distancing. It is very unfair that they aren’t allowed open. It will take years for everything to go back to normal.”
“They could reopen with special rules and guidelines. There probably will be places going out of business because of this. The Government should try and help but there’s not much you can really do about it.”
“They should stay closed unfortunately, to keep numbers down. Every industry that can’t reopen, the Government should try and help them as much as they can.”
CIARA O' CONNOR
PAUL REDMOND
TONY MCLOUGHLIN
WILLY CLIFFORD
“Guidelines would be fantastic if everyone adhered to them. The Government could help with these small businesses. If they were to reopen now, there would be problems. It’s very difficult for all small businesses with the situation at the moment, it’s out of everyone’s control. Time will tell.”
“I absolutely believe they should reopen with the same rules as restaurants, just reduce the opening hours. Some sacrifices should be made to reopen. There should be a lot more assistance from the Government such as grants. There are other industries also suffering from this such as the arts and music.”
“It’s madness. The whole situation is obviously not ideal. The social distancing could be implemented in pubs. Places won’t be able to reopen again because of this. What difference is there having food?”
“I think they are being overly cautious. Small pubs will be annihilated because of this so the Government should help with grants for these places.”
IAN WATSON
TOM MCGUINNESS AND LAUREN FOX
PAUL MCLELLAN
“People need to socialise. I don’t necessarily think there will be a second wave. With special regulations and guidelines, the pubs should be open. What is the difference between food and drink?”
“It’s a tough one. Probably not the worst thing to hold off on but it is damaging for the businesses. Wait another two weeks and check the numbers and then we will see.”
“They should open with special guidelines. The pubs could adhere to the guidelines and then they could reopen.”

Kerry’s 'Explore Our Waterways – Women on the Water' programme was devised by Kerry Recreation and Sports Partnership in conjunction with Kerry Canoe Club, Killorglin, inviting women to join them for a beginner based kayaking programme. It's suitable for women without any prior experience on the water. "An element of fun and social engagement will be implemented into the programme and should participants choose there is a progression pathway created into the Kerry Canoe Club, Killorglin," Club Chairperson, Brian O’Flaherty added. Madeleine plans 150ft plunge!
Abseiling 150 ft down from the roof of Croke Park will be an exciting adventure for one local woman who plans to raise funds for a charity close to her heart. | By Michelle Crean Madeleine Doyle from Beaufort, who is now living in Ballycasheen, is planning to take part in 'Abseil Croke Park 4 DSI' challenge on Saturday, October 24. And the funds raised will go to the Ability Programme which will help to secure meaningful employment for young adults in Ireland with Down Syndrome. "I have a younger brother with Down Syndrome - James who is aged 22," Madeleine explained to the Killarney Advertiser. "The Ability programme is aimed to help James and others like him to find work in an area that is of interest to them, to help them grow professionally and gain confidence." James, who loves music and sport, is currently working in Deenagh Lodge in Killarney and attends a 'Skills 4 Life' pro-
gramme through St John of Gods in the IT Tralee. And Madeleine says that she feels the the abseil was meant to be as it is falling on the day of her birthday. "I took that as a sign to take the plunge literally! I now have something to do on my birthday, I'm so excited, I can't wait." Madeleine set up a Facebook donation page: Madeleine’s Abseil Croke Park for DSI and also an iDonate page with the same name where people can contribute if they wish. Her original target was €250 and to date almost €2,400 has been raised. "Thanks to everyone who has supported me so far. I genuinely wouldn't have expected to get remotely close to it. People are wonderful especially in these uncertain times."
Dublin legend Jim Gavin supports local author A Killarney man said he was “gobsmacked” to receive a hand-written card from former Dublin football manager Jim Gavin who read his book while on holiday in Dingle. Paddy Osborne, who is also a Dubliner, but is living in Killarney for years, published ‘Baxter’s Boys’ in February of this year. Based in the north inner city of Dublin, where Paddy grew up, the story traces the lives of a football team as they bond and share life experiences during a previously unheard of run of success for their
small soccer squad. Gavin, who famously led Dublin to five All-Ireland football titles in a row, including defeating Kerry twice, was pictured reading ‘Baxter’s Boys’ in his Dingle holiday home last week. Gavin is from the Clondalkin area of Dublin, a suburb that faces similar social issues that Osborne covers in his dark comedy. He won an All-Ireland football medal with Dublin in 1995 but honed his skills as a youngster while participating in the street leagues of Clondalkin and this is another cultural issue that Osborne

CHANGES: Jill Duggan from Killarney Toning and Beauty Studio says she's had to make changes to her studio to make it COVID compliant for her clients. Photo: Grigoriy Geniyevskiy
From shutdown to a ‘new normal' for Killarney beauty business | By Michelle Crean Just like every other business who suffered a sudden closure due to the health crisis Jill O'Donoghue from Killarney Toning and Beauty Studio has had a tough few months as she emerged from lockdown. Never in its 30 year history has the business suffered such a devastating closure but since reopening she’s had to reorganise her business to make it COVID compliant, including getting the builders in. “We got a bit of a shock but did as we were told and closed for the recommended time,” Jill told the Killarney
Advertiser this week. ”We got the go ahead to reopen on June 29. I was delighted to have started, and had begun changing a few things around before that. With the help of a great carpenter and my trusted side kick, my hubby Pat, a team of painters and electricians set about moving walls and giving my studio a revamp. We now have a lot more space as we got rid of one room to make more space for other treatments. I got great advice from the HSE and beauty governing bodies on how exactly to get back to action. I’m so delighted to be back pampering everyone.” She said that she was delighted to welcome back all her valued clients and friends who she missed, and that her staff, who completed the relevant hy-
giene retraining, were amazing. “The beauty industry holds a high standard of hygiene. We have used an ozone fogging system in the studio long before COVID was around. A glass bead steriliser heats up to 269 degrees and kills all known germs and autoclave for all our implements. Our PPE is so important for our protection and clients. We wear both the mask and visor and we are now asking our clients to wear masks since the first day we reopened. They have positively responded to everything we have implemented front of house and behind the scenes.” Now clients coming in are asked to arrive at the appointment and wait at the door to be brought into the treatment room, she explained. “We have staggered appointment times
so clients and staff don’t overlap at the front door. We try to limit the surfaces the clients touch. We take deposits upon appointment booking and no extra bags or jackets can be brought into the salon. Unfortunately no magazines, teas or coffees are allowed, and there’s cleaning and sanitising between each client which is essential. I’m so lucky to be located in a car park, on the ground floor of the building so clients can wait in the car until their appointed time.” All her clients have been so eager to get back to the “new normal”, she added. “I find them extremely attentive to our new procedures. Lots of clients were back straight away, certain ages were a little slower, I guess they were observing how things would go. Over the last week I have seen an increase of the mature ladies coming in. May I say a huge thank you for the support, through messages and cards over the lockdown. Clients even brought vouchers and products to help support local businesses.”

Major changes means a safer stay | By Michelle Crean Hotels have had to implement stringent new measures to ensure safe delivery of service including The Brehon and other Gleneagle Group properties, who, ahead of reopening developed a company wide programme. Measures introduced include a new standard of hotel cleanliness and disinfection and procedures to ensure guests enjoy an even cleaner and safer stay. Contactless menus have now become the new norm which allow guests to view and order food on their phones and mobile devices via QR code which communicates contactless with the kitchen team. They also provide guests with access to this ahead of their stay. There's also online booking for all spa facilities too. In the past week The Gleneagle Group has also replaced thousands of complimentary print newspapers distributed annually to guests with environmentally-friendly digital versions. "We have partnered with PressReader, a digital newspaper and magazine service, to make connecting to The Gleneagle Group hotels, bars and restaurants free Wi-Fi even more edifying," Patrick O’Donoghue, Managing Director said. "This new partnership means guests now have access to more than seven
thousand newspapers and magazines from over 120 countries in 60 languages. Guests simply connect to our hotel Wi-Fi and have full access to this service." Staff have also identified and made crucial changes to many of their identified touchpoints including check-in and out, communal areas, dining areas and guest bedrooms. The hotels are operating with the highest levels of cleaning and best practice standards and have increased cleaning and disinfecting levels throughout the hotel. "We have introduced hourly sanitisation of identified touchpoints across all public areas and will continue this process going forward. Some guidelines will be highly visible throughout our hotels, others will be combined into our service offerings, and many others in the back-of-house will even go invisible to your eye. Our hotel teams are receiving ongoing briefings and enhanced operating protocols. We take great pride in maintaining the highest standards of cleanliness and hygiene. We take great pride in ensuring we uphold these guidelines, whilst still offering our guests the highest level of service that our guests have come to know." Staff at The Brehon Hotel were also thrilled to learn last week that the hotel had made it into the Top 10 TripAdvisor awards list.

Both hotels, run by the Randles family, reopened on July 3, but after a slow start they are now reporting close to 60 percent occupancy in both properties. Both hotels undertook a range of pre-opening training exercises to get staff ready for the "new normal". The two hotels were amongst the first in the county to achieve the new Fáilte Ireland COVID-19 Safety Charter. “Overall it has been very positive,” Bernadette Randles told the Killarney Advertiser. “It started off slow, maybe around 22 percent, but as soon as people saw the efforts we are going to make it safer for our staff and guests things started to pick up.”
Learning to cope with the new procedures has been a challenge but, so far, it is all working out positively. Cleaning rooms, for example, takes longer than it did previously. “It is great to be back at work and have the doors open,” she added. “Our staff are coping very well, it is not without problems, but we learn from them and move on.” She, like many other hospitality sector operators, expressed disappointment that pubs were not allowed reopen on August 10 as originally hoped. “Our staff are working very hard and they need some place, away from visitors, to socialise and relax too,” she said. “They need an excuse to get dressed up and go out.”

ON YOUR BIKE: Comedian Bernard Casey got on the bike to lend his support for the spinathon on Saturday last.
DEDICATED: TJ O'Connor, one of the organisers of the 54321 Challenge, taking part in the spinathon in Killorglin on Saturday last.
Spinathon a boost to fundraising drive Three spinathons and four collections took place over the bank holiday weekend to help boost fundraising efforts for this year's 54321 Challenge - with the help of Kerry manager Peter Keane and 'Local Gossip' comedian Bernard Casey. | By Michelle Crean The charity Challenge has no option but to go back to basics this year with just five participants instead of the usual 50. This means there's a significant drop in funding for the chosen charities so organisers took to the streets of Killorglin, Cahersiveen, Listowel and Dingle on Saturday. All but Listowel had participants take part in a charity spinathon while volunteers collected funds to help boost the cash flow - and they're planning another fundraising day on Main St in Killarney on August 15, with other venues to be confirmed. Then it'll be time to take on the enormous task of the Ring of Kerry Cycle on day one on August 20, followed by a climb 3,407 feet up Carrauntoohil on day two, day three the five will challenge themselves further by cycling over 78kms from Killarney to the foot of Mount Brandon and then climb 3,123 ft up Mt Brandon, and day four on Sunday, August 23 they'll finish with a cycle from Dingle to Killarney. To date the Challenge has raised almost â‚Ź207,000 supporting a number of very deserving Kerry charities. This year Skellig Stars, a group of children
and adult athletes with special needs; Kerry Hospice Foundation and Enable Ireland Kerry are the chosen charities. Each charity will have a champion undertaking the challenge on their behalf. "The spinathon was done because fundraising was quite slow this year as we've only five taking part due to the restrictions when we'd normally have 50," one of the organisers TJ O'Connor said. "It was fantastic, it was amazing really. We had over 30 people spinning on the day. We are overwhelmed with peoples' generosity and kindness." However, he added that they haven't gotten the final figure yet from Saturday's event as it has to come in from four locations and be counted. Anyone looking to donate can do so via www.54321challenge.org or see the individual charities Facebook pages for online donation information or donate by Direct Debit to Bank of Ireland, Killarney. Sort code 90-57-58 Account No. 74356384 (BIC BOFIIE2D and IBAN IE88BOFI90575874356384). "Thanks to everyone who has donated so far and those who took part in the spinathon. Your kindness is greatly appreciated."

Intimate wedding proves the perfect day!

WEDDING OF THE WEEK
28
It may not have been the original big 250 guest wedding that they had planned - but it was more than perfect for the newly married Mr and Mrs Mannix who tied the knot in Muckross on Friday.
Patrick Mannix (33) from Muckross Road and his bride Deirdre O'Sullivan (34) from Bonane/Ballincollig shared a very intimate day with 50 close family members for what they described as the most "perfect day". The couple said "I do" in the Church of the Holy Spirit of Muckross which was celebrated by Fr Niall Howard before heading to town for photos with local photographer Dylan Clifford, followed afterward by a celebratory meal, and later some music, with family in the Killarney Oaks Hotel. Chief Bridesmaid was Claire O'Sullivan Rochford, sister of the bride, while Best Man duties fell to John Paul Mannix, Patrick's brother. The rest of the bridal party included bridesmaids Orlagh Harrington and Grace O'Sullivan, Deirdre's sister and first cousin respectively. Groomsmen were Patrick's friends Fearghus Riordan and Barry Finnegan, while seven nieces enjoyed being mini princesses for the day as the couple's flowergirls.
"We had a fabulous day," Patrick told the Killarney Advertiser. "We were to be originally married on July 2 with 250 guests and were very lucky to be able to reschedule it so soon, the Oaks were amazing. We had 50 there and we were just delighted to be able to go ahead and get married." Immediate family included Patrick's parents Chriss and John and Deirdre's parents Brendan and Rita. This week Patrick, from Flesk Lodge who works as a 6th class teacher in St John's NS in Kenmare, said that he and Deirdre, who works as an Assistant Director of Public Health Nursing in Cork, were very lucky not to have booked their honeymoon. Campaign launched to combat increase in littering A new Government of Ireland campaign 'Love This Place, Leave No Trace' has been launched to tackle a growing littering issue throughout the country, particularly in some of our most scenic locations which have recently become littering hotspots. It is a joint initiative of the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS), Waterways Ireland, Inland Fisheries Ireland, Fáilte Ireland, Sport Ireland, The Department of Community and Rural Development, the Office of Public Works, Coillte and Leave No Trace Ireland. There has been a notable increase in littering throughout the country in the last number of weeks since the easing of COVID-19 restrictions, and areas affected include National Parks, Nature Reserves, Forest Parks, OPW National Heritage Sites, rivers, beaches, forests and special areas of conservation. Maura Kiely, CEO of Leave No Trace Ireland, is calling on the public to work together to address this issue. "We need to take action now to halt the scourge of litter in our beautiful countryside," she said. "Everyone needs to take responsibility. Littering is a threat to our fragile ecosystems and a moment of laziness can have long-term effects. An aluminium can takes 400 to 500 years to break down, a plastic bag can take up to 20 years. A discarded plastic bottle, meanwhile, will last for a million years.”
Mysterious creature unidentifiable
British residents are trying to fathom what a 15-foot long sea creature could be after it washed up on a local beach.
The Minister for Media, Tourism, Arts, Culture, Sport and the Gaeltacht, Catherine Martin TD, in welcoming the campaign, said: “We all love to exercise and be active in our scenic outdoor spaces so let’s ensure they remain accessible to all by Leaving No Trace and keeping our natural environment litter-free. As more of us ‘make a break for it in Ireland’ this year let’s respect the environment which is one of Ireland’s greatest assets.” Disposable barbecues are identified as a major problem, not just as litter but also as a source of forest fires and wildfires, and are increasingly discarded carelessly in public spaces. barbecues are not permitted in any OPW National Heritage sites, Parks or Gardens or National Parks. Not only do they pose a huge fire threat which divert emergency services, but they endanger wildlife, their habitat, destroying large swathes of special areas of conservation and place fire fighting personnel at great risk to extinguish them. They also contain charcoal which is usually unsustainably sourced and cannot be recycled or composted. Individuals, communities, organisations and the public can sign up to get guidelines on how to be responsible in the outdoors by visiting www.leavenotraceireland.org.
Brendan Gleeson to play Trump in new docu-series Irish actor Brendan Gleeson will play Donald Trump in a new mini-series that will be launched in September. ‘The Comey Rule’, based on a book by former FBI director James Comey, tells the story of the factitious relationship between the President and the FBI chief.
Trump sacked Comey in 2017 after controversy surrounding the FBI’s investigation of Hilary Clinton emails during the last US election campaign and a separate investigation into Russian influence in the same ballot. ‘The Comey Rule’ is “an immersive, behind-the-headlines account of the historically turbulent events surrounding the 2016 presidential elec-
Puzzled people online are guessing that it’s a walrus, a cow, a horse or a donkey after photos were posted on social media following the discovery on a Merseyside beach. The creature has been dubbed the ‘Ainsdale Anomaly’ and has been described as “very bizarre” and “a mishmash of different things in one”. "It's 15 feet long, it has flippers, it's furry and it seems to have another creature attached, possibly via an umbilical cord, so it could have been giving birth. It was almost like a whale that had eaten a horse that had eaten a dolphin,” said a man, who asked to remain anonymous, after he shared photos with the Ainsdale community Facebook page. "I didn't get too close because there were lots of flies and it stank," one woman, who saw it first hand, said. "I made the mistake of going downwind as I worked my way around it and I nearly threw up.” An official from Natural England has been down to inspect the remains, but was unable to move them alone. tion and its aftermath, which divided a nation,” according to US channel Showtime which will air the series in mid-September. The Dublin actor sprang to prominence after appearing as The Quarryman in the 1990 blockbuster ‘The Field’. Gleeson has starred in several other Irish movies including ‘The Snapper’, ‘In Bruges’, and ‘The General’ when he played Irish criminal Martin Cahill. He has also featured in Hollywood blockbusters like ‘The Gangs of New York’ and ‘Braveheart’.

New memoir from top Irish jockey to be published later this year Barry Geraghty is one of the greatest jockeys of all time. He recently retired after a successful 24-year career, and has this week announced that his memoir 'True Colours' will be published this autumn.
Minister for Health announces appointments to the CervicalCheck Tribunal
Written with Niall Kelly, it will be published in Ireland by Gill Books on October 23, with a simultaneous publication in the UK by Headline. "Over the years I have been asked many times to write a book, but it never felt right," Barry said. "Having thankfully come through my career all in one piece, I feel that I have a story worth telling. 'True Colours' is a book about self-belief and how putting one hundred and ten percent into something you’re passionate about can make dreams happen. It is about finding the balance between chasing the highs and managing the lows, something we have to manage in all our lives to one extent or another. I hope people will enjoy the read and maybe even gain some personal insight from what I have learned about life through my racing career." Having ridden nearly two thousand winners, including five Champion chases, four champion hurdles, two Gold Cups, two Stayers’ Hurdles, an Irish Grand National and, of course, the race that made him famous the world over – the Grand National win on Monty’s Pass in 2003 – Barry has rightfully earned his title as one of the greats. But Barry is covered in scars, has broken all his limbs, his shoulders, his ribs and his nose, and he has acquired over 70 stitches to his face. He faced his toughest test on the eve of the 2019 Aintree Grand National as he headed towards his fortieth birthday when he broke his

leg, subsequently spending most of 2019 with it encased in a metal frame. Forced to take stock, he decided it was better to go out on his own terms and made an astonishing comeback at this year’s Cheltenham, where he rode five winners, becoming the second most successful jockey in Cheltenham’s history and bringing down the curtain on one of the most glittering careers in jumps racing on a high. The Hon. Ms. Justice Ann Power who is a serving judge of the Court of Appeal as Chairperson of the Tribunal, and The Hon. Mr. Justice Tony O’Connor who is a serving judge of the High Court as an ordinary member of the tribunal. These appointments will be in addition to the appointment of the Hon. Mr. Justice Brian McGovern who is a retired judge of the Court of Appeal and was previously identified for appointment as an ordinary member of the tribunal. The Minister said that the tribunal will be established without delay. “The Tribunal will allow women to progress their cases in a sensitive manner. I want to thank all three judges for taking on these roles and look forward to engaging with them.” The Minister also said the CervicalCheck Steering Committee would be reconvened. “I intend to appoint an independent chair to that group, as soon as a suitable candidate can be identified. President Higgins offers Irish sympathies to people of Lebanon The President of Ireland, Michael D Higgins, has extended his sympathies to the people of Lebanon following the catastrophic industrial explosion on Tuesday that killed over one hundred people. The blast, which shook the whole city
of Beirut, killed at least 113 people and injured more than 4,000 others. A two-week state of emergency has been declared. President Michel Aoun said the blast was caused by 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate stored unsafely in a warehouse.
The explosion occurred just after 6pm local time (3pm Irish time) on Tuesday after a fire at the city’s port. The blast was felt 240km away on the island of Cyprus. “On behalf of the people of Ireland, may I extend deepest sympathies with the people of Beirut,” said President
will be convened in the near future,” he said. Mr Justice Charles Meenan’s report on an alternative system for dealing with claims arising out of CervicalCheck, which was published on October 16, 2018, proposed that a tribunal be established under statute that would facilitate the hearing of claims arising from CervicalCheck in private and in a more timely and less adversarial manner, while also recognising the issues of liability involved, the Constitutional right of access to the courts and the Constitutional right of the parties involved to fair procedures. The legislation necessary to establish the CervicalCheck Tribunal passed through the Oireachtas and was signed into law by the President on July 23, 2019. As the key arrangements for the CervicalCheck Tribunal were in place it was intended that the Tribunal would be established by the end of March 2020. However, due to the outbreak of COVID-19, in line with the public health measures being taken to control the outbreak of the virus it was decided to delay the establishment of the tribunal.
Higgins. “Ireland and Lebanon have a longstanding relationship, which has included the presence of Irish troops on peacekeeping missions, and valuable relationships with villages and communities in Lebanon. On the occasion of my official visit to Lebanon last October, I was happy to have the opportunity to deepen that relationship. The hearts of the Irish people are with the Lebanese people. Sabina and I send our condolences to those who have lost loved ones or have otherwise been affected by the disaster.”

Folklore: Taylor Swift 'Folklore' is the eighth studio album by American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift, which has just been released through Republic Records. It was written and recorded while Swift was in isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic. The album marks a departure from the upbeat pop sound of Swift's preceding studio albums to strippeddown tunes driven by piano and guitar, featuring producers Aaron Dessner, Jack Antonoff and Swift herself. The new album portrays what Swift called "a collection of songs and stories that flowed like a stream of consciousness" rising out of her imagination.

The album manifests vivid storytelling from largely third-person narratives that detail heartbreak and retrospection. 'Cardigan' was released as the lead single from the album. 'Exile', featuring American indie folk band Bon Iver, and 'Betty' are scheduled to be the second and third singles, respectively. 'Folklore', which was released last week, has received widespread critical acclaim, with emphasis on its sonic coherence, relaxed atmosphere, and lyrics based on fictional narratives. It opened at No. 1 on Billboard’s latest album chart with a whopping 846,000 sales in the United States.
A novel of secrets, memory, family, and forgiveness by the bestselling author of 'When Never Comes'. Lizzy Moon never wanted Moon Girl Farm. Eight years ago, she left the land that nine generations of gifted healers had tended, determined to distance herself from the whispers about her family’s strange legacy. But when her beloved grandmother Althea dies, Lizzy must return and face the tragedy still hanging over the farm’s withered lavender fields: the unsolved murders of two young girls, and the cruel accusations that followed Althea to her grave. Lizzy wants nothing more than to sell the farm and return to her life in New York, until she discovers a journal Althea left for her - a Book of Remembrances meant to help Lizzy embrace her own special gifts. When she reconnects with Andrew Greyson, one of the few in town who believed in
Althea’s innocence, she resolves to clear her grandmother’s name. But to do so, she’ll have to decide if she can accept her legacy and whether to follow in the footsteps of all the Moon women who came before her.

HEALTH & FITNESS Funding for businesses affected by flooding welcomed
Advice - By Brian Foley

Up to €20,000 emergency funding available for uninsured sports clubs and community groups in Kenmare and South West region has been welcomed by Minister Norma Foley TD.
Permission to fail Failure is a funny concept. In school, failing can be the difference of one question on a test. There’s a line drawn and you’re either above it or below it. And yet in life, there are rarely hard lines drawn. There are usually blurry lines at best and our definition of failure is usually something that comes from within. The problem is that for those of us who are used to not failing in school, working out often can feel like this unknown feeling some call failure. Not knowing how to do a squat, power cleans and needing to amend pull-ups as you cannot do them, can feel like failure to some. To that I say, “Good!” Now we can begin the real learning. See, often times the fear of failure prevents us from even trying something new. At Activate we often get people who have been stalking us on social media for 3-6 months, even a year! Why do they hesitate to come in? Because they’re intimidated. Why are they intimidated? Because they think
they won’t be “good enough”. In other words, they feel like they’ll fail. Once you’re in the doors, we’ll take care of you. We’ll show you that not only is failure OK, it’s expected! It means that you gave it a shot and that you’re willing to learn. For us, FAIL stands for First Attempt In Learning. You only perceive failing because that’s what you’ve been told not to do for 13-17+ years of your life in school! At the end of the day, there is no failing in our gym. It’s only trying your best each time you come in and slowly making progress. Yes, we keep track of results, but that’s to show yourself how much you improve over time. Because as you feel like you’re failing day in and day out, you’re actually improving incrementally both physically, mentally, and emotionally. You’re becoming stronger and more resilient. You’re becoming the best version of yourself and that version doesn’t fear failure - it embraces it.
Speaking on the announcement this week, Minister Foley said she’s delighted that the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment Leo Varadkar TD has established a scheme to provide urgent support to uninsured small businesses and not-for-profit organisations who were affected by recent floods. “This scheme, which will be operated through the Irish Red Cross Society, offers up to €20,000 to eligible businesses and organisations who do not have flood insurance and who have been affected by the terrible floods we saw earlier this year. This will help to ensure that these businesses are able to get back on their feet as quickly as possible. “Communities have been heavily im-
pacted by COVID-19, however, to face flood damages on top of these issues is even more challenging,” she said. “It is my hope that this funding goes some way towards helping affected businesses and organisations get back on their feet. “I know more must be done to help communities recover from recurring flooding issues. I will be working with the Tánaiste to ensure that we do all that we can to support businesses, as well as Minister of State with responsibility for the OPW, Patrick O’Donovan in order to find long-term solutions for these flooding issues.” Danny Healy-Rae TD also welcomed the humanitarian support scheme announced. "I welcome the humanitarian support scheme announced for flooding in Kenmare, Sneem and the South West and ask that the funds are easily accessible to those businesses, community groups and residential property owners who are urgently in need of it following the recent flooding."
Time to paint your chimney At the July Killarney Municipal meeting, Councillor Michael Gleeson proposed that the Council would consider promoting a scheme jointly with home owners in towns and villages in order to encourage the cleaning of roofs and gutters and the painting of chimneys. The Council replied that such a project may qualify as part of the towns
and villages for locations with a population of less than 10,000. The Municipal Officer will liaise with the relevant community groups in relation to this matter. Councillor Gleeson welcomed it and said: "Such work would on completion greatly enhance the overall appearance of our towns and villages and would most certainly help in securing additional marks in the Tidy towns and villages competition."

New €280,000 road paver added to Council's fleet Kerry County Council has added a new €280,000 road-finisher paver to its fleet of machinery. The new unit will assist in the rollout of the annual Roads Programme across the county and was in operation in the past week on the Listowel to Ballylongford road. The paver is a strategic item of plant for Kerry County Council providing a modern reliable road paver to assist in the upgrading of the roads network. The Roads, Transportation and Marine Unit of Kerry County Council is responsible for the improvement and maintenance of national, regional, local and urban roads. Kerry County Council depends on national Government for
the greater part of its funding to carry out improvements to the road network. The Council received a total allocation of €41.559m from Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) and the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport (DTTAS) in 2019, but also contributed €3.9m of funding from the Council’s own resources. The 2019 allocation enabled 80km of road pavement overlays to be completed and allowed for improvement works to 202km of the non-national road network. Kerry County Council is committed to delivering quality services and infrastructure for the betterment of the county and ensure all critical infrastructure is resilient, regularly inspected and maintained.

There are so many perennials to choose from! Mid-summer sees perennials at their best. There are so many to choose from, it would be difficult to pick just a few so I decided to cheat and go for whole families such as the Salvia group, or Sage, as it is better known. We are all familiar with culinary sage, but not everyone is aware that it is a very close relative to the red Salvia we plant as summer bedding – yes, the one that is a culinary delight for slugs! There is a fantastic range of plants between those two cousins, for example the semi hardy Salvia Hot Lips, (red and white), ‘Mariska’ (a deep maroon), Fairy Queen (bluey grey), Maraschino (red), and Raspberry Delight (cerise). These small leaved salvias are great in pots, and are quite reliable in surviving the winter if they can be kept out of the worst wet and frost. There are more hardy varieties, which are excellent in a sunny site, with well-drained soil, such as Amistad (blue), and ‘Black and Blue’ (it’s in the name!). The hardiest is Salvia nemorosa, which is a very hardy perennial, suited to underplanting and ditches, as it tolerates shade. They spread about one metre and flower profusely from spring until autumn. Its seeds seem to be attractive to tits and greenfinches. All have a long flowering period, some not stopping until November, and are an absolute favourite with bees and pollinators. Another large group of perennials are the so-called “prairie plants”, such as Helenium, Echinacea, Rudbeckia and Bergamot. Most of these plants have flower shape in common, they are often daisy shaped. However, the colours they come
in are unlimited! Heleniums are available in a range of colours and heights, as always, living in a windy place, the shorter varieties are winners in my book. Examples are ‘Chelsey’ - 80cm/orange, ‘Mardi Gras’ - 1m/orange and ‘the Bishop’- 1.2m/buttery yellow. A tall variety, at 1.4m, is ‘Moerheim Beauty’, burnt orange. Echinaceas come in whites, oranges, pink and red. One of my favourites is Pow Wow – a very compact variety which withstands wind. Bergamots are strongly scented, and produce masses of flowers. Again, a compact variety is 'pink Supreme'. The hardiest is the red variety. All these daisy shaped flowers are very attractive to Hoverflies which we gardeners must welcome into our gardens. Hoverflies look a little like wasps - this is an example of ‘Batesian mimicry’, where a potentially edible animal resembles an inedible one, in this case a wasp or bee. Hoverflies have no stinger, so they are edible, however, by mimicking a wasp/ bee its potential predators leave it be. This amazing feat of nature is named after Henry W. Bates, and English naturalist and explorer who researched in the Amazonian rainforest of Brazil in the late 1800s. As with most perennials, be aware of slugs in the spring, and support those tall lanky perennials with gro-rings to make the most of their show!

Local car scene slowly coming back to life The local classic car scene returned to some degree of normal over the long weekend as Abbeydorney Vintage Society staged a scaled-back version of its annual road run. The event usually takes place over two days at Abbeydorney Complex and runs would usually have the back-up of a static display and other sideshows. However, crowd gathering rules prevented the field display but the club decided to press on with a different version of the same event. The tractor run took place on Saturday and this was followed by a vintage and classic car run on Sunday. Close to 70 cars visited Ballyheigue, Ballybunion, Asdee and Ballyduff, while at the same time raising funds for the Palliative Care Unit at University Hospital Kerry.
Stars of the show included a 1917 Model T Ford and a fully restored Ford Transit van from the 1970s. Several local rally drivers used the event as an excuse to drive their rally cars (at road legal speed, of course), after they had been lying idle in sheds across the county since last year. Listry man Paul O’Shea entered his Modern Classic Volkswagen Scirocco Mk2 in the event. “It is great to be out,” he said. “There is something happening at last.” Despite the lack of field activities and a smaller than usual turnout due to COVID-19 regulations, the club deemed the event a success. “Thank you to everyone who came and supported our event or helped in anyway, they are too numerous to list individually,” an event spokesperson said. “Your time and generosity is greatly appreciated.”

Meanwhile on Monday, BG Motors in Killarney hosted a Cars and Coffee event on its Tralee Road premises. Over
one hundred cars attended the events including a Kerry registered Peugeot 505 hearse from the 1980s.

Kayne’s, the popular family run eatery on the Muckross Road is launching its new ‘Sunday Brunch’ menu on August 9. Inspired by the new requirements of today’s guests, Executive Chef Cyrille Durand has created a menu inspired by the laid back nature of the staycation market and to adapt to the new ways in which everyone will be socialising and reconnecting with family and friends in the coming months. The menu gets off to a tempting start with the Kayne’s full Irish, Chef Cyrille authentic French toast and coconut milk American style pancakes with the added option of crispy streaky maple bacon. A menu filled with local suppliers a testament to the great small independent business on our doorstep in Killarney. Farm fresh eggs from Beaufort play a prominent part on the menu and include eggs benedict and the star of the show Mrs Randles’ eggs royale – poached Beaufort eggs, Kenmare smoked salmon, Scottish muffin, hollandaise. Younger guests at Kayne’s are, of course, looked after with egg and soldiers, sausage or bacon sandwich, pancakes and mini French toast.
To top it off there is a bottomless brunch option available – ensuring you are topped up with infinite bubbles, at a finite cost. Kayne’s terrace is also now open. Pre booking is recommended for brunch, but walk-ins are also welcome. For more details on Sunday Bunch, contact 064 6639300 or check out the website www.kayneskillarney.com or social media pages. Wedding bookings now open for 2021 at Dromhall Hotel The Four Star Dromhall Hotel on the Muckross Road is ready for the 2021 wedding season and is now open for bookings. “A lot of plans and dates have been disrupted this year, but if you need a wedding venue with prime dates available in 2021, just say yes to the Four Star Dromhall Hotel Killarney,” said Ciara O’Callaghan, the hotel’s Wedding and Events Coordinator. “We have been making wedding days magical for over 50 years. Top tips to make your CV stand out from the crowd
Your CV has one thing to do – get you noticed by potential employers. It is the ‘door-opener’ and needs to demonstrate clearly why you are the right person for the job or the company in question. This needs to be done in the most concise and targeted way possible and you need to test that it passes the seven second rule! On average if an employer doesn’t see what they want in seven seconds your chances of getting shortlisted or interview are slim to none! Get the basics right and they will read on. It doesn’t matter how much experience you have or how many courses you have done, only those that are relevant to the job should be included. This means that you will need to adapt your CV to different jobs.
USE A CLEAR AND SIMPLE LAYOUT
Fonts such as Times New Roman, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial, Calibri, Cambria, Georgia and Helvetica are best and use 12-point font size unless you are really tight on space and then reduce to 11. Put your name in larger font at the top of the CV. There's no need to include the word CV or Curriculum Vitae, and include your contact details underneath – email, mobile number, address if you feel you want to, and LinkedIn profile details if you are on it.
STICK TO THE TRUTH
While it is tempting to stretch it a little, if you get called to an interview or references are verified, there is every chance that you will get caught out. Your CV should have the following sections – Opening summary/professional profile, Work Experience, Education and
Training, Key Skills and Expertise, Interests and Achievements which are only needed if you are a recent graduate or school leaver. After the Opening Summary which can be done as a paragraph or bullet points, you need to lead with your strongest section. If you have extensive relevant experience and it has been a long time since you completed your education then you are primarily selling your experience on your CV. If you are student or recent graduate then you need to focus on how your education links to the job so give details of modules, projects and any key achievements linked to your qualification.
WORK EXPERIENCE
Employers like evidence and data so when completing the section on work experience include proof of what you have achieved in the workplace and rather than giving a list of tasks and responsibilities of your past jobs tell them what competency you have demonstrated. Use action verbs to explain what you do/did. Don’t forget to include voluntary work if relevant.
EDUCATION
In relation to education; be selective. If it’s more than 15 years since you completed your Leaving Cert then you don’t really need to include it. While you may have lots of courses done over the years only include those which are relevant to the job you are applying for. You could

also consider dividing them into two sections – ‘Education & Training’ and ‘Other Training’. Information in sections on employment and education should be listed in reverse chronological order. If you are concerned about a gap in your CV, say for example if you have taken a year out to travel or some years out to care for family then state the years so the employer can account for the time and give a simple and short explanation of the competencies you developed during it.
KEYWORDS ARE ESSENTIAL
This is particularly the case if the CV is being read by a computer before it ever reaches the eyes of a human resource manager, a process known as Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS). Mirror the exact words, language and terminology, that have been used in the job description. Make it clear that you have what they are looking for. When it comes to key skills and expertise make sure to link them directly to the job, demonstrate what you are great at and be prepared to explain your skills in interview.
HOBBIES AND INTERESTS
The section on ‘Hobbies & Interests’ always raises questions. If you have more than seven years’ experience it’s not really relevant. Never use the word ‘hobbies’, use ‘Interests and Achievements’ instead. Give a line about each one that is useful and dynamic.
REFEREES
Unless you are a recent graduate or starting out in your career, employers don’t need details of referees on your CV, only if requested to do so in the job advertise-

ment, as they won’t contact them until after interview. Always remember to ask permission of those who have agreed to provide a reference for you to include their name and contact details on the CV. Proofread the finished product several times! There is no greater turnoff for a potential employer than seeing spelling, grammar mistakes or misprints. Get a couple of family members or friends to check it and don’t rely on spellcheck!
Kerry Airport prepared for post-Pandemic fight Kerry Airport will reveal an operating profit of €1,020,341 for 2019 in a new report set to be published today (Friday). The airport’s profits, after tax, has increased from the 2018 figure of €966,056, the report will show. The Killarney Advertiser was given access to some of the report's key findings ahead of today’s release. These include an increase of passenger numbers - 369,836 people used the airport last year – an increase of 1.2%. The Kerry-Dublin route performed well with 58,021 passengers.
The London-Stansted route performed in line with market expectations. London-Luton performed well achieving a final passenger load figure of 85%. German routes to Berlin and Frankfurt-Hahn continue to perform to expectation. The sun holiday routes to Alicante and Faro performed well too although exact figures for these routes were not revealed in the pre-report documentation seen by the Killarney Advertiser. Turnover increased from €7.9m to €8.6m reflecting an increase in aircraft and passenger related revenue due to growth in passenger numbers using the facility.
Additional business was generated via oil exploration event management hosting when Audi cars used the airport to ferry international motoring journalists in and out of Kerry ahead of the launch of the new Q7. While, John Mulhern, CEO of Kerry Airport, said he was happy with 2019 figures he warned that the outlook is much bleaker as the airport continues to cope with the fallout of the pandemic. He said the airport “will face that challenge unabated”. “2019 itself was another successful year following on from a very strong 2018. Again, we must stress the critical impor-
tance of the Kerry-Dublin air service to the development and the growth of the economy of the South West region and we hope that this product will continue to get the support it deserves.” He added that travel is now ancillary to the incredible efforts being made by so many to keep us safe and well. "There is no doubt, when the time is right and it is safe to do so, the airport will regroup and continue its mission in supporting Kerry and this regions’ economy. Undoubtedly there will be many months, if not years, of toil ahead to recover fully. Kerry Airport will face that challenge unabated.”

Somewhere beyond the sunset, Where loved ones never die, You sleep in a beautiful garden, Beneath a golden sky,
No words we write can ever say, How much we miss you everyday, No one knows the grief we bear, When the family gather and you’re not there, We laugh, we talk, we play the part, But beyond the sorrow is a broken heart. The sorrow we feel, we can never explain, And the ache in our hearts will always remain.
There are no words to tell you Mom, What losing you has meant, Every day we think of you, And the happy years we spent. You would want us to keep smiling, And that’s what we will do, And every time we reminisce, We have loving thoughts of you. You are with us when each day dawns, And when we say goodnight, Our guardian angel here on earth, And heaven’s shining light. You will never be forgotten, And we often shed a tear, But it’s only because we love you, And wish you were still here.
Somewhere beyond the sunset, Where loved ones never die, You sleep beside the ocean, Beneath the golden sky. Though heaven and earth divide us, We are never far apart, For you are always in my thoughts, And forever in my heart. Your loving wife, Mary Philbin née Doran.

Crokes must be wary of O’Connor and co.
Killarney giants favourites to advance but Kenmare’s forwards could pose problems Week 2 was not quite as free-flowing or high-scoring as the first – the dismal weather saw to that – but it was certainly just as tense as no more than a kick of a ball separated the sides in all four matches in the Kerry Senior Club Championship. Silverware is still on the cards for Dr Crokes, Kenmare, Dingle, Austin Stacks and Legion while for Kilcummin, Templenoe and Kerins O’Rahilly’s, the threat of relegation looms large. After a solid Round 1, the predictions were less impressive by me last week. I got three of the four results right but the margins were tighter than I anticipated. (I’ll blame the weather for that.) Let’s see how badly I fare this time out.
Group 1 Kenmare Shamrocks v Dr Crokes TONIGHT AT 7PM: KENMARE The tie of the round is in Kenmare this evening as Shamrocks face Dr Crokes in a straight shootout for a place in the final. With both sides level on two wins and four points apiece, it’s a case of winner takes all in Round 3, although their superior points difference (+13 versus +3) means that a draw will suffice for the Crokes. A cursory glance at the Senior Club Championship tables suggests that all is going swimmingly for the Lewis Road club – they have scored more and conceded less than any other side in the competition – but they didn’t have it all
their own way against Kerins O’Rahilly’s in Round 2. The Tralee outfit started much the brighter and were it not for Chris Doncel’s opportunistic goal in the 26th minute, Crokes may well have trailed at the break. Even in the second half Crokes struggled to pull away from the visitors; it took the cool head of substitute Kieran O’Leary to give them the lead as the clock ticked into stoppage time before Tony Brosnan added the insurance point in the 65th minute. With Brian Looney in particular catching the eye, the Crokes did well to right the ship but they will not be overly enthused by the fact that only one of their starting forwards scored in the second half. Conditions were difficult to be fair but you would expect more of a scoring threat considering the attacking talent on show. For their part, Kenmare needed a very late goal from the boot of veteran corner forward Paul O’Connor as they secured a thrilling one-point victory over Templenoe. It was the second goal in two games for O’Connor and the Crokes will have to keep a close eye on the inform forward tonight. Seán O’Shea was uncharacteristically quiet against Templenoe (in part due to the fact that he was sin-binned early in the second half) and if Kenmare are to run up a winning score, one would imagine that the Kerry star will have a big part to play. Home advantage will naturally play into Kenmare’s hands and they will be riding high after last week’s dramatic win, but the Crokes should still have enough about them to advance to another final. VERDICT: DR CROKES BY TWO.

Group 1 Kerins O’Rahilly’s v Templenoe SATURDAY AT 7PM: STRAND ROAD Rahilly’s must be wondering how it has come to this. The club from Strand Road could quite easily be heading into Round 3 with a final berth on their mind. Instead, they’re 60 minutes away from a relegation playoff. William Harmon’s men came so close to beating Kenmare and they led against Crokes, but two tough-to-take defeats leave them needing a major performance and a result tomorrow night. Jack Savage has shouldered a heavy load so far. The free-taking centre forward has been responsible for exactly two-thirds (16/24) of Rahilly’s points in their opening two games as the others have unfortunately been unable to find their shooting boots. The loss through injury of Tommy Walsh has been a huge blow; as we saw with Kerry last year, he can be the perfect foil for quick and skilful corner forwards, and Rahilly’s certainly have those in Barry John Keane and Conor Hayes. On the plus side, half forward Seán Walsh (0-1) showed well against Crokes, as did inspirational midfielder David Moran who kicked two excellent scores
from play. Karl Mullins was a one-man wrecking machine at centre back and he knocked over a point in each half in what was surely one of the performances of the round. Rahilly’s were also boosted by the return from injury of Gavin O’Brien. He came on for the final 10 minutes or so and but for a great save by Crokes keeper Shane Murphy, he would have scored a potentially match-winning goal. Templenoe are very unlucky to find themselves in this position considering how the match against Kenmare panned out but they will have no time to feel sorry for themselves. They will be desperate to win tomorrow and consign Rahilly’s to the playoff, and they probably deserve a break, but they will find the going tough in Tralee. VERDICT: KERIN'S O' RAHILLY'S BY TWO.
Group 2 Kilcummin v Dingle SATURDAY AT 5PM: KILCUMMIN Three teams are still contention for the top spot in Group 2 but after last weekend’s results, Dingle are in a slightly better position than their rivals. The men from the west were really good against Legion the last day, es-
pecially around the middle third where they exerted their dominance and took a stranglehold on the game. Conor Geaney grabbed the headlines with six super points but it was a real team effort from Pádraic ó Corcráin’s men and they now know that victory over Kilcummin will give them a great chance of qualifying for the final. It is very tight, though. Dingle are currently level with Stacks on three points apiece and with an identical points difference of +2. Where Dingle lead the way is in the ‘points for’ category (+28 versus +26) so if Dingle match or better Stacks’ result against Legion, they will top the group. However, if Dingle beat Kilcummin but Stacks beat Legion by a greater margin, Stacks will top the group. If Dingle and Stacks both win by the same margin, and Stacks score three (or more) more points than Dingle, Stacks will top the group. Kilcummin have nothing to play for as such – they’ll be in the relegation playoff regardless – so it’s a lot to ask of them to challenge Dingle. Having said that, they won’t want to give up anything easy, especially at home. Stacks and Legion will be hoping that professional pride kicks in and they cause an upset, but realistically Dingle should do the business. VERDICT: DINGLE BY FOUR

Group 2 Legion v Austin Stacks SATURDAY AT 5PM: DERREEN As discussed in the previous match preview, Stacks are still well in contention but whatever happens up in Kilcummin, they’ll have to do the business themselves down the road in Derreen. Points difference may become a factor at some stage but in reality they’ll just be going out to win; they’ll worry about crossing that other, more complicated bridge if they come to it. Unfortunately, things are not looking as promising for Legion. With star player James O’Donoghue out injured (barring a 15-minute cameo), they didn’t play well in their defeat to Dingle and now they need the underdogs, Kilcummin, to get a shock win to get them out of a hole. But you never know - stranger things have happened. Stephen Stack will, of course, be sending his charges out to hold up their end of the bargain and if they do that, they’ll give themselves a fighting chance. Their opponents have the momentum, however, and with key men like Podge O’Connor and O’Donoghue struggling with injuries, the odds appear to be slightly against the Killarney side in this one. VERDICT: STACKS BY ONE.

All to play for in Fantasy Club 20 Backs were on top over a wet weekend of Club Championship football Forwards ruled the roost in Round 1 but the adverse weather conditions meant that backs and midfielders were the big points-getters in the second round of the Killarney Advertiser Fantasy Club game in association with Gaelic Plus. The wet ball tends to lead to better defence than offence and that was very much the case in the Kerry Senior Club Championship last weekend. In fact, seven of the eight sets of backs earned bonus points for holding the opposition to fewer than 15 points. The eighth team, Templenoe, were denied this bonus (and their victory) due to a last-gasp goal against Kenmare. This is in stark contrast to Round 1 when only three teams held their opponents to 15 points or fewer. So it was the backs and, to a lesser extent, goalkeepers and midfielders who did the bulk of the damage for this week’s top managers and we have some new names at the top of the leaderboard after an exciting round of action.
LEADING THE WAY
The forwards may not have been firing on all cylinders but that didn’t stop five managers from breaking the 200-point barrier (two reached this milestone in Round 1). Unsurprisingly, all five find themselves towards the very top of the updated table. A tally of 200 by John Crowley from Kenmare Shamrocks has shot him up the leaderboard from fifth to joint top where he is joined by Rathmore stalwart Conor Healy, who scored 202. Graham O’Connor from
Castleisland is just one point back in third with Cian Foley (Kilcummin) and Alan Kelly (Dr Crokes) in fourth and fifth. There is an air of controversy surrounding the manager currently occupying sixth spot. Killarney Legion and Kerry star James O’Donoghue was granted late entry to the competition when it was discovered that he had forwarded his team to the wrong email address. Satisfied that his case was genuine and after consulting with fellow participants on Instagram, his entry was accepted ahead of Round 2. Competitors were left questioning their act of kindness, however, when it emerged that O’Donoghue had scored 216 points in Round 1, a score which put him in first place on the leaderboard. He subsequently posted a less imposing score of 159 in the second round but he is still in sixth place and well in contention. DJ Murphy, who led the competition after the first week, has slipped to seventh, just ahead of myself in eighth. Philip O’Connor of Dr Crokes and Gavin Moriarty of the Legion round off the top 10.
SULLIVAN After an impressive performance in Dingle’s victory over Legion, All-Star defender Tom O’Sullivan was the highest scoring player of the week. In addition to the points he earned for starting (1) and winning (3), Sullivan scored two points from play (18) and he also got a bonus as Dingle conceded under 15
BATTLE: Kerins O'Rahilly's midfielder David Moran tackles Johnny Buckley of Dr Crokes. Moran scored 17 fantasy points in Round 2 while Buckley managed a respectable 8.
points (8). His overall total of 30 is the second-highest score posted in the competition to date. His teammate Matthew Flaherty also scored big with 21; four of the top five managers in the league have both of the Dingle men in their team. Karl Mullins of Kerins O’Rahilly’s (27) was just behind Sullivan in the Round 2 scoring charts. He also notched two points from play and his side conceded under 15 but, as Rahilly’s lost, he didn’t pick up the three-point win bonus.
Legion No. 1 Brian Kelly was by far and away the top keeper of the weekend as he scored three points from placed balls and kept a clean sheet to register an impressive tally of 21. At midfield, Kevin O’Sullivan of Kenmare Shamrocks scored 1-1 to earn a whopping total of 27 points and David Moran (17) also made the Team of the Week by scoring two points from play against Crokes. Dingle’s Conor Geaney (21) was the top-scoring forward of Round 1 with Tony Brosnan and Killian Spillane (20 each) also doing well. The chasing pack will be hoping to make up some ground on the leaders heading into the the break for the Kerry SFC. Only four of the eight teams will still be involved thereafter: two in the relegation playoff and two in the final. The number of players each manager has at his disposal will be key, so the contenders will be keeping a very close eye on this weekend’s results. Sonia Ag Rith What a person. She’s a world champion athlete many times over, but here we encounter her as a real person; so pleasant, friendly, and accommodating for the long queue of people. From babies to grandparents, they all want to get their photographs taken and to chat with Sonia O’Sullivan. And through it all that perpetual smile. I had the pleasure of her company over a recent weekend during the the 2013 Rebel Tour of Cork based in the Beara Peninsula. Having completed the Rebel Cycle Tour, a request for an interview for On the Ball got a ready response. “Sure. Delighted to talk sport with you after those demanding hills”. OTB: What was it like on the Healy Pass? Sonia: Spectacular scenery both on the ascents and on the descents, with the roadway winding its way. While the climb was a little testing, especially the second time around, I was well up for that challenge and I enjoyed it. One had to be careful coming down, as it is quite steep so you’ve got to concentrate and keep your eyes on the road surface. OTB: You got some reception from the spectators when you arrived back. The first person home as usual after that gruelling 166km cycle. Sonia: Yes, it was unbelievable, especially on those last few kilometres. You know when you are getting a little tired the wonderful marshals and the lead car with siren blaring really got the adrenalin pumping. It was just like kicking for home on the final lap in so many of my races in stadia all over the world. It was that good again. I certainly did not expect that level of reception from the people of West Cork, who cheered us on so enthusiastically to the finish.
Everyone was smiling in the glorious sunshine. Just great. OTB: Since you retired from elite running you have got involved in rowing, triathlons and cycling. How does the cycling compare with your former running career? Sonia: I have found it wonderful. You travel much longer distances on the bike and much quicker so it is much easier, of course. I am amazed how quickly I recover from a long cycle compared to a tough race on the track, where it takes the body longer to get back to equilibrium. The residue of fitness in the body after so many years training and competing is a good reservoir for new challenges. For the past few days I was cycling in Rás na mBan in Clare and found the speed those top international cyclists, including the Irish ladies, was phenomenal. They were averaging 30mph around the Burren and those fabulous places in Clare. OTB: How did you manage? Sonia: I did fine, but not quite as fast as their hectic pace. I actually got caught up in the flow of the bunch early on and then came crashing off the bike after 8km, but apart from a few scratches and grazes to the arms I was fine. I just got back up on the bike and dropped into the peloton very easily. I managed fine in the subsequent time trial in Clare and went straight on to Glengarriffe for this Rebel Tour of Cork. OTB: Obesity is becoming quite a big challenge for an increasing number of people in Ireland, including young people. Sonia: It is a problem worldwide and needs to be addressed as some people’s lifestyle is unhealthy. However, I am delighted to see so many people of all ages exercising when I come back to Ireland. I see them out on the roads
– walking, jogging, cycling – and it is wonderful to see people doing this together. It is also very sociable as people can do it with friends in twos, threes, or whatever. Just put on that tracksuit and runners; get out and about in whatever weather conditions emerge. No need to worry about how fast or far you go, just go, but do it on a regular basis and the rewards are great. Set your own challenges and there is a wonderful sense of achievement when you reach your target and achieve goals set by yourself. OTB: Australia is home for you now with Nic, Ciara, and Sophie. Tell me about it. Sonia: We live in Melbourne where Nic is Director of Melbourne International Track Club. He has coached many great world class athletes including Cathy Freeman, who won gold in the

400m Sydney Olympics 2000 and Craig Mottram, of course. Currently he has some very promising Irish athletes on his books, including top guys such as Mark English and Paul Robinson. He assists them to get into meets where they can have the top competition to achieve the high qualifying standards for world competitions. I also want to help Irish athletes reach their potential, opening doors for them and helping them to focus on high achievements. It isn’t just enough to reach the qualifying standard to be able to compete in the Olympics and say that that you are an Olympian. You need to push on and set higher challenges and bid to win against the best in the world. I also help with Nic in the Track Club.

MOUNTHAWK PARK , TRALEE
| By Adam Moynihan Killarney Celtic are the champions of Munster after they deservedly emerged victorious from a closely-fought encounter against Limerick Desmond League side Rathkeale on Sunday. At the end of a tense and goalless 90 minutes, the match went to extra time and for the second week in a row Celtic looked to be heading for penalties. After the heartbreak of the shootout defeat to Fairview in the FAI Junior Cup, spot-kicks was the last thing Celtic fans wanted to endure. Luckily for them, midfield maestro Matt Keane was on
hand to make sure they wouldn’t have to. Keane is usually the provider but he popped up with the all-important goal early in extra time as he met Darragh Lowth’s cross with his head to give the Celts the lead. Brian Spillane’s well-drilled outfit held firm thereafter despite the best efforts of a strong Rathkeale team and they joyfully brought the Munster Champions Trophy back to Celtic Park where they celebrated with friends, family and supporters. Their attention now turns to the domestic competitions and they are well positioned to challenge for more silverware before the season is done.

It was very safe from a COVID-19 stand point, just two people per vehicle were allowed in and no spectators.”

He also provided commercial pacenotes for events all over Ireland and Britain with many local competitors using his products through the years. A larger than life character, he had as much time for the newcomer starting out as he had for the big star names.

Kilcummin GAA RESULT: Senior Club Championship Austin Stacks 2-5 Kilcummin 1-6. They say there is a thin line between defeat and victory and in this case it was the width of the crossbar. With Stacks leading by two points deep in injury time Kilcummin mounted one last desperate attack and after carrying the ball the full length of the field involving numerous players, Shane McSweeney unleashed a rocket of a shot that smashed against the crossbar. As Padraig O’Sullivan blew the final whistle you would have to feel disappointed for the players who had given it their all in a waterlogged Connolly Park as the result meant we finish bottom of the group and face a relegation battle between either Templenoe or Kerins O’Rahilly’s later in the year. LOTTO: There was one winner of the lotto jackpot of €3,200 on Sunday, August 3. Congratulations to Pat Fleming, Clydine, Kilcummin. Numbers drawn were 3, 13, 18, 23. Next draw on Sunday, August 17.
