NCTs to resume in Killarney - but taxis still in limbo

EXCLUSIVE

| By Sean Moriarty Taxi drivers in Killarney have been forced travel as far as Skibbereen in West Cork to ensure their National Car Test (NCT) is in order.

“Our daughters deserve better”

Parents call for action at St Brigid’s Secondary School | By Sean Moriarty Parents at one Killarney school outraged at outdated prefabs and insufficient and overcrowded classrooms – including the collapse of roofs on two older prefabs last September - are demanding immediate action from the new Government. The Parent's Council of St Brigid’s Secondary School say due to consistent rising numbers of students year on year – from 413 students in 2013 to 634 for the current academic year – want a promise that new facilities will be built. In November 2015 the Minister for Ed-

ucation and Skills announced the list of Major School Building Projects. St Brigid’s was listed under the 2019-2021 phase - but so far no action has been taken. They say some of the classrooms are not fit for purpose. There are also a number of concerns including the lack of outdoor sports facilities at the school, the reduction of the number of permanent classrooms due to size and a 2017 Department of Education and Skills directive to combine four classrooms into a new science lab and art room.

The classrooms were replaced by 12 new prefabs but the land on which they are situated is rented off the Presentation Sisters. “We have been allocated two new prefabs but it is not good enough,” Hazel Norris, Chairperson of the Parents’ Council told the Killarney Advertiser this week. “The Presentation Sisters have been outstanding in their support, they have offered land to build a new school. We will be calling on all newly elected members to meet us on this matter. We are waiting far too long and our daughters deserve better.”

Last week the NCT service announced that it was suspending the underbody inspection of cars due to a fault with the lift that it is used for such inspections. The Killarney NCT centre was one of 47 centres nationwide that was effected by the issue. Taxi drivers, especially those who need to renew their public carriage licence, must have a full and valid test certificate. The partial cert currently offered by NCT centres will not be accepted by the National Transport Authority, the Government agency that manages taxi regulations – meaning without a valid NCT – they’ll be off the road. Private motorists were advised to present their cars as per their scheduled appointment and that every part of the test except the underbody section would be completed. Some NCT centres have reopened fully since last week’s controversy – Killarney’s test centre will recommence underbody testing “within the next week” according to a statement issued by the Road Safety Authority of Ireland. The Skibbereen test centre was one of the first to offer full tests since last week’s nationwide lift failures. “Seven or eight of us had to go to Skibbereen,” Killarney-based taxi driver David O’Sullivan told the Killarney Advertiser. “It’s four or five hours round trip so it is half a day’s wages but these things happen, our cars suffer wear and tear and these lifts are up and down every day too.”

| By Sean Moriarty Killarney Gardai will take part in a month of road safety action in an effort to reverse an upward trend road traffic fatalities and serious collisions incidents for 2020. So far this year four people have died on Kerry roads. The latest victim was a man in his 70s who died in a crash near Ballybunnion on Wednesday. There were a total of seven fatalities on Kerry roads

last year. Garda will specifically target the use of mobile phones while driving; the non-wearing of seat belts – front and rear; speeding; driving while intoxicated and dangerous driving. “I would rather people took responsibility for their own behaviour than us having to detect and prosecute them,” Superintendent Flor Murphy told the Killarney Advertiser. “The message is simple, slow down, don’t use a phone, don’t drink and drive and wear a safety belt.”

Killarney schools shut for strike Secondary schools and other second-level education centres in Killarney were forced to close on Tuesday as members of the Teachers Union of Ireland took part in a one-day strike to highlight pay differences between teachers.

The owners of the Gleneagle Hotel in Killarney - who also operate Ireland's National Event Centre (INEC) Arena in Killarney - have lodged legal proceedings in the High Court challenging the allocation of Government funding to a similar events centre in Cork city.

Over 40 teachers in total from the Killarney branch of the TUI took part in the strike action. Some members of the Association of Secondary Teachers of Ireland (ASTI) also joined the picket. “Their main gripe is that teachers who joined after 2011 are being paid lower than those who were there before that

| By Sean Moriarty Teachers and lecturers who joined the sector since 2012 are paid at a lower rate for the same work as their colleagues, according to the TUI representative for Kerry and Limerick, Les Begley. Local schools that were forced to close on Tuesday included St Brendan’s College, St Brigid’s Secondary School and Killarney Youth Reach. The biggest picket was outside Killarney Community College on New Road where teachers there were joined by their colleagues from smaller schools in town. St Brendan’s and the Community College remained closed for the day while St Brigid’s made alternative arrangements to look after students.

costs, poor wages and over regulation in their sector. Local operators, like all nationally, are expected to adhere to Department of Education regulations – despite not being officially recognised by the State’s education body. The local childcare facilities are also regulated by Tulsa, DCYA,

for doing the same job,” Les told the Killarney Advertiser. “It is having a knockon effect on recruitment. HSE, Pobal, and other Government agencies. Although the centres are in receipt of a weekly grant of around €64 per child, which boils down to €4.68 per child per hour in their care, professionals are obliged to carry out additional paperwork like child assessments and they are not getting paid for this additional work. Terms of the grant mean they are not allowed charge additional fees to parents to offset rising costs. “Early years educators who value the education of young children, who work from the same curriculum as national

A new events centre at the old Beamish and Crawford brewery site in the city centre was recently awarded €14m in State aid. This is in addition to the previous €36m allocated to the project. The 6,000-capacity Cork entertainment venue has been hit by endless delays, political wrangling, missed start-dates, legal challenges, planning difficulties and funding problems since its announcement in 2016. Despite an elaborate sod-turning exercise by then-Taoiseach Enda Kenny in February of that year, and ahead of a General Election, not a single brick has been laid on the site. While directors of the Gleneagle Group did not want to comment on the situation, it is understood their issue centres on the amount of Government funding being made available to the Cork project. “It is not appropriate to comment at this time, as the matter is the subject of court proceedings,” said a Gleneagle spokesperson. The INEC operates as an independent commercial entity and a similar venue, especially one funded by the Government to such a degree, and within 100kms of the Killarney venue, is the main focus of their legal challenge.

Other Killarney-based schools who attened the protest included: Bellview Woods Childcare, Little Explorers, Happy Hearts Montessori, Ballyspillane Family Resource Centre, Sliabh Luachra Montessori, Maggie’s Montessori, Raheen Montessori Playgroup, Fossa Preschool, Creative Kids Preschool, Naíonra Faithleann, Anabla Preschool, Danú Chiuldcare Rathmore, and Puffins in Firies.

Slim siblings shed almost 18 stone!

Kerry County Council wants to let the public know that groups are welcome to book the ANAM Arts and Cultural Centre on East Avenue. The local authority, in conjunction with Killarney Town Hall, hopes to put together a full programme of events at the centre and is calling on local arts groups to use the free facility. The building was revamped at a cost of €240,000 with half of the cost being provided by the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht and the other half by Kerry County Council. It was officially opened before Christmas. The facility is open to any local individual or groups including musicians, photographers, and drama groups. ANAM Cultural Centre can be pre-booked for day or night performances or exhibi-

tions. It can host indoor or outdoor performances. “We are open and want people to use it,” Killarney Municipal District officer Eileen O’Donoghue told the Killarney Advertiser. “We are interested in hearing from people who might want to run children’s art classes on a Saturday morning or a drama group that wants to stage a play. During bigger events like The Fourth of July Festival we could have a American marching band perform in the outdoor section. It's all about local people, whether they come to perform or to watch a performance, and it will add to the town centre too. Maybe during the summer tourists will leave their hotels and visit the centre and on their way back might stop at bar or shop.” Interested parties can contact the Killarney Town Hall on 064 6631023 or killarneyartscentre@kerrycoco.ie.

Three Killarney siblings are looking a whole lot different these days – after losing almost 18 stone!

David O’Brien (47) from Glenflesk lost a whopping 8 stone 1Ib in a year, his sister Regina Lynch (45), also from Glenflesk, shed 7 stone, while their eldest sister Sandra Hall (51) from Arbutas Grove lost 2 and a half stone. Their journey began after Regina started her weight loss journey with Marie’s Slimming World in April 2018. Her change in lifestyle over the following months went on to inspire Sandra who joined in January last year, with David joining up just a week later. David (47), who is a chef, lost the most - a whopping 8 stone 1Ib. His starting weight was 19 stone 9 and a half pounds and it has transformed his life so much so that he went on his first foreign holiday. “It is hard as I’m a chef and you pick away,” David told the Killarney Advertiser. “I had to have willpower but I found it very easy to follow the SW plan. I went on my first ever sun holiday as I finally had the confidence to do it. I couldn’t run last July but am now looking at doing the Cork marathon in May.”

He added that health wise, he’s now in the best shape of his life. “My skin was bad, my feet and ankles were swollen and I had bad psoriasis all over my legs and arms. I was borderline diabetic last year. Everything is now perfect.” Regina was the second biggest loser - going from 16 stone 6Ibs to 9 stone 6Ibs – and says that customers no longer recognise her in O’Connors Newsagents, where she works. “My weight was up and down, I tried everything, literally,” she explained. “I have lived here all my life and worked in O’Connors for years and many customers don’t recognise me!” Regina took up running as well as hill and mountain climbing, and says she’ll stay with Slimming World to maintain her weight. “I’d be afraid I’d gain again.” Sandra, who works in Revive Café in New Street, added that she had only a small amount to lose but feels fitter and healthier than ever. “I was 10 and a half stone. I just felt I needed it as I’m getting older. The support from the group is great.”

Business rates meeting planned for Killarney | By Sean Moriarty Commercial rates in Killarney are set for a major overhaul with the forthcoming Rates Revaluation process. Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce and the local branch of the Irish Hotel Federation will co-host an information session to inform business owners on the implications for their business.

The new valuations for the areas undergoing revaluation will be published in 2021 and become effective for rates purposes from 2022 onwards. The meeting will be presented by the Head of Valuations for Ireland, Declan Lavelle, and the Commissioner of Valuations, John O'Sullivan. Third annual Kilcummin fundraising walk planned | By Michelle Crean

The Lake Hotel Killarney reaches 200 year milestone! The Lake Hotel Killarney reopened for the season on Thursday last - but this is a special year - as the four-star family run hotel is celebrating 200 years in business. | By Michelle Crean Established in 1820, 2020 marks the bicentenary year of the hotel, which is located just 2kms from Killarney town centre. The hotel is rich in history and culture, first opening as a town house in 1820 and progressing to a guesthouse in 1840. Previously owned by the Hilliard family, the Huggards purchased The Lake Hotel in the 1900s and it remains owned and operated by the Huggard family today. The Huggard brothers, Tony, Colman, Niall and Joe are third generation hoteliers from one of the great pioneering families in Irish hospitality and celebrated 100 years of Huggard hospitality in 2012. A legacy passed down through the generations is the emphasis placed on quality, attention to detail, and exemplary customer service. Each year, the Huggard family invest in the enhancement of the hotel and are highly committed to maintaining a high standard for their guests. In keeping

with tradition the new season marked the unveiling of new developments at the luxurious hotel with newly renovated guest bathrooms, a new fitness centre, steam room and sauna and 20 refurbished bedrooms. “On this very special milestone for The Lake Hotel, it is evident that the secret to the longevity and success of this property is the constant strive for improvement from the owners,” Sales and Marketing Manager, Sheila O’Callaghan, said. “They have never become complacent and have evolved with the times, constantly reinvesting in the premises and always looking at ways to improve the product offering. What the owners are most passionate about is their extended family – their guests and their team. The Huggards deliver such a warm welcome that all visitors to the hotel become friends as well as guests. As the hotel grows and develops, it will always retain its old-world charm and warm family welcome.”

Kilcummin locals and friends of the late Brendan O’Leary will gather for the third annual fundraising walk in his memory next week. His widow, Una O'Leary from Lyreatough, Kilcummin, has been overwhelmed with the huge support of the ‘Brendan O'Leary Memorial Walk’ over the past two years, and has decided to run it again this year on Sunday, February 16. Registration takes place at 1.30pm in Una O’Leary’s yard, and the walks, a 3k and a 6k around the “Ring of Lyreatough”, begin at 2pm. It’s €10 for adults and U16s are free. Brendan, a farmer and an agricultural contractor, passed away in 2014. He was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer in 2012 and died away 18 months later on February 18, aged just 42. Every year Una, who says the walks keeps her going, organises the event to raise funds for the Palliative Care Unit at University Hospital Kerry. “This is the third annual walk,” Una told the Killarney Advertiser. “The first year we raised €3,500 and last year we raised €5030. There were over 300 at last year’s walk and we’re hoping for a good turnout again this year. I organise the walk around the time of his anniversary. He was a very popular local man and I’d like to thank family, neigh-

bours and friends for their continued support.” She added that there’s a bit of fun on the walk also. "It’s a fun riddle walk. Participants take a card and find clues along the way. It gets everyone talking and there’s an overall prize for an adult and also U16s. I’d like to thank all the business people who give spot prizes so generously.”

Kingdom welcomes latest Lottery millionaire Kerry has a brand-new millionaire after the National Lottery confirmed yesterday (Thursday) that Tuesday night’s Daily Million top prize of €1 million was bought in Milltown. Kelly’s Londis Store sold the winning ticket and store owner Seamus Kelly and

his staff are celebrating the good news. However, the National Lottery is now appealing for all its Daily Million players in the area to check their tickets after they matched all six lucky numbers in the 9pm draw. The winning numbers are: 14, 17, 30, 31, 33, 38 and the bonus number was 28.

Columnist ANNE LUCEY gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry and beyond

You have to suspend disbelief to vote for any politicians Every candidate is in trouble on the eve of an election and they will pull a worried face if they catch you on the way into the polling booth too.

decades “The trick of being

BEING VULNERABLE

vulnerable will have to be unmasked at some stage

My advice is don’t believe them and make up your mind. “He's in trouble, he's in trouble!” my mother, God rest her, who never in her life voted Fianna Fáil, being on the blue and red spectrum of politics, voted for them on just one occasion. I think it was in 1981 at the Monastery. The late great Jackie Healy-Rae in his black astrakhan cap caught her by the arm and said; “Mai, Mai he’s in trouble, he’s in trouble,” speaking of the late John O'Leary. Jackie was a master FF draughtsman at the time drawing people in cars to the booths and managing the art of bi-location to be outside several of the busiest at the same time. There was a surge to Michael Moynihan. My mother had a kind heart and did not want to see anyone in trouble and would not have sacrificed human pity on the altar of abstraction, political idealism or history. She voted for John. The next day in that Kerry South election, John O’Leary easily took the second seat, with with 22 percent of the vote. I will not repeat what my mother said about Jackie Healy-Rae when the results became clear, because she cursed as seldom as she voted Fianna Fáil!

are saying that Michael will be alright and he will have plenty votes”. He goes on to say “this is the oldest trick in the book”. Now, Michael, I have one that is older – and it is saying you are in trouble when the bookies have you at one to 100!

OLD TRICK

That was 40 years ago. It is an old trick. I heard afterwards he pulled the same stunt in 1977 when John topped the poll! What stirred my memory was Michael Healy-Rae’s appeal in the January edition of the Kenmare News, which I picked up when I went around the Ring last Friday. I actually came across Michael as he was dropping into the shop at Castlecove. The Ring is full of his posters, along with Norma Moriarty's. Michael writes that he is “genuinely worried that my political competitors

The decades trick of being vulnerable will have to be unmasked at some stage just like the boy who cried wolf too often. The latest version has the Healy-Rae constituency map division not working and that Danny is losing out to Michael! As if! On the same night Paddy Power in High Street were asking you to put down €100 to win €1 in the case of Michael, they were asking you to put down €50 to win €1 in the case of Danny. The Healy-Rae's are in trouble? Fool me once shame on you, but fool us twice, shame on me! And I would say that the card is being played not just by the Healy-Raes, but by other parties too and they’re safe as houses TDs. Not to be a party pooper – don’t believe them! Now, you have to suspend disbelief to vote for any politicians. It is a bit like watching a movie; you have to ignore that this is all fiction and that it was put together with great effort and ingenuity, and none of it holds water or is in any way realistic or will last once the film is over.

Women need to be more vocal Now, what is it about language? I was trying to wish someone a Happy Biddy’s Day last Friday and it kept changing to buddy on the iPhone text. Why is buddy allowed and not biddy, I wondered. And then I read how Colm O’Rourke is being criticised for using homophobic language for describing a style of play as “for pansies”. Most of the criticism directed towards Colm is coming from men. Can you imagine if I, or any woman, made an issue of not having biddy on the text? I wonder how far I would get? We will never have the same voice for some reason as issues taken up by males. Women need to be more vocal about language. There is a movement to make St Bridget’s Day a national holiday, to sit alongside St Patrick’s Day. Bridget is more an Irish saint than Patrick who always seems to me remote and severe with his crozier and his abstract theology and mixing with princes and the toffs of society. No, Bridget milked the cows and had a sense of humour, mischief and practical wisdom that reflects the Irish woman’s character more than the severity associated with much of the church. I vote for Biddy’s Day! And while I am at it, for iPhone text allowing biddy alongside buddy!

Single constituency change is a disaster for Killarney One thing is sure - not only has Killarney lost out in not having its own town council - the drawing of Kerry into one single constituency has also been a disaster for this town. Our status is now firmly second to Tralee. I give just one example; Killarney was always distinct and at the heart of Kerry south. But not only is its distinctiveness being forgotten – it is being overwritten, and nobody is bothering to correct it. I refer to the broadcast by Morning Ireland last Monday – from Tralee of course! In the old days it might have been from Killarney. Ditto Radio Kerry’s main election programme was

from Tralee on Tuesday morning. It can all be justified now on the basis this is one constituency and Tralee is the main town in Kerry.

GLARING ERROR

The contributors on Morning Ireland were overwhelmingly Tralee based. A glaring error was allowed to remain uncorrected. The presenter stated badly that; "The county never had a Green councillor. It had. Three, in fact. Outside Germany, and possibly Sweden, Killarney was the first, not just in Ireland but in Western Europe, to elect a Green representative. It did so in 1985, with young Marcus Counihan from the Park Road who was on the Council for around two

years and was succeeded by Michael Lucey for what was the longest Council in the history of the State. It was a remarkable feat for Killarney the time, and its small group of Greens among them Eugene O’Shea, Maggie O’Shea, Mike Buckley, Mike Lucey and myself. It made history for politics in Killarney, but it also put on the map environmental issues in Killarney and gave the National Park a protection against those who would have turned the Demesne into a golf course. It also gave a small protest voice to over development in Ross Road and elsewhere, and the free for all planning fiasco that afterwards became the hallmark of the unmit-

igated disaster of the Celtic Tiger. If only we had had a louder voice!

FALSE STATEMENT The Killarney Green victory was followed in Tralee by Conor Fitzgerald, cousin of Sinn Féin’s Pa Daly, who held his seat subsequently and was an RTE employee. Dublin followed Killarney with returning the country’s first ever Green TD, and several party conferences were held down here. The false statement that Kerry never had a Green councillor came from the national broadcaster constituency programme coming from Tralee! And it was left uncorrected. I know RTE got several phone calls about it.

ELECTION ROUNDUP Tomorrow (Saturday), the country will go to the polls for the 2020 General Election – and who represents your county is decided by you. 13 candidates are running for five seats in the Kerry constituency including; Deputy Brendan Griffin from Castlemaine and Cllr Mike Kennelly from Listowel for Fine Gael. Fianna Fáil have candidates; Deputy John Brassil from Ballyheigue, Cllr Norma Moriarty from Waterville, and Norma Foley from Tralee.

Deputies Michael and Danny Healy-Rae from Kilgarvan are running again as Independents, Sinn Fein are running one Kerry candidate Cllr Pa Daly from Tralee, while Cleo Murphy from Kenmare will run for The Green Party. Sonny Foran from Causeway is running for Aontú, while John Bowler from Camp is running for the Irish Free-

dom Party. Tralee’s Ted Cronin is running for the Party For Animal Welfare, while Sean O’Leary from Cork is also set to stand for Kerry, and is running in all five Cork and five Dublin constituencies. This time out the Labour Party have no-one running for the first time since the 1930s.

No certainty Healy-Rae will keep his seat There is no certainty that Independent candidate Danny HealyRae will keep his seat - polling at four percent - following this week’s TG4/Ipsos MRBI constituency poll carried out for the ‘Vóta 2020’. With five seats on offer in Kerry, 13 names are on the ballot and the competition is fierce. Sinn Féin’s Pa Daly looks set to pass the quota with 20 percent of first preference votes and to keep the seat that retiring party stalwart Martin Ferris has held since 2002, capitalising on the current wave of support that

Sinn Féin have nationwide. Michael Healy-Rae is in joint-first position with a first-preference vote of 20 percent. Minister of State for Tourism and Sport, Fine Gael’s Brendan Griffin reaches the quota needed with a first preference vote of 17 percent according to the poll which puts him in strong contention to take one of the five seats. What of the other two seats? There is quite a gap between Brendan Griffin and the fourthplace candidate Norma Foley, Fianna Fáil on 10 percent; as many as five of the remaining candidates will feel that they are in the running for the last two seats.

VISIT: Leader of Fianna Fáil Micheál Martin, pictured with Cllr Breandán Fitzgerald and General Election candidate Cllr Norma Moriarty, paid a visit to Killarney on Monday.

Hoteliers issue warnings to politicians who want our votes Labour shortages, tax rates and insurance are the key messages the local branch of the Irish Hotel Federation wants on the new Government’s agenda. Padraig McGillicuddy, PRO for the Kerry branch of the IHF, is calling on the politicians that want votes in tomorrow’s (Saturday) election to address these key issues. “The Kerry Hoteliers call on our political representatives to commit to a return to the nine percent VAT rate, increased tourism budgets for the regions and seasonality coupled with further relaxing of the permit to work policies and a commitment to insurance reform now,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. One year ago the Government increased

VAT charges on service industries from nine percent to 13.5 percent. The country is close to full employment and this is causing a recruitment issue within the hotel and catering industry. “We have to offer more than a beautiful country with a warm welcome, we have to be competitive in the global markets and offer real value for money,” added Mr McGillicuddy. He also criticised the rip-off insurance industry that has forced several businesses to close. “Our society needs realignment to reality when it comes to insurance, the claims culture needs to be recalibrated. If someone falls at home it’s an accident but if someone falls in a public place it’s a means to an fraudulent supplementary income,” he said.

GENERAL ELECTION 2020

Chambers 12 point plan for Killarney ahead of GE2020 Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce has laid out a 12-point plan that it wants the new Government to adopt following tomorrow’s (Saturday) General Election. “We are fully appreciative of the fact that February 8 is a national election but we are firmly of the view that all politics is local and, in that regard, we have a number of priority projects that we would like to see implemented, addressed and funded, as a matter of priority, when the new Government is formed,” Chamber President Paul Sherry said. Like their colleagues in the hotel industry, Chamber members want the high rate VAT reduced to its previous nine percent. The Chamber will be calling on the newly formed Government to prioritise the outer bypass, from Lissivigeen to Farranfore and from Lissivigeen to Castlelough. The Chamber will encourage the newly elected Government to liaise closely with and support Kerry County Council and Killarney Municipal District Council in relation to the masterplan for the all-important Lewis Road site.

The uncertainty over Brexit and the high cost of doing business are taking their toll on businesses in Killarney and new national incentives to support small and medium sized operations and independent retailers are very urgently required. The development of a fully looped amenity trail around Lough Leane and Muckross Lake, is another project the Chamber wants brought to fruition. A new cycle way from Ross Road to Flesk Bridge will provide a continuous off-road route between the National Park at Knockreer and the park at Muckross. They also have major ongoing concerns over chronic traffic congestion and inadequate parking in and around the town. The provision of a Primary Care Centre in the town and the expansion of the town’s poster free election time campaign to be rolled out nationally are two other issues they want addressed. Members will continue to lobby for more site visits by the State agencies, including the IDA and Enterprise Ireland, to Killarney to determine potential and maximise job creation opportunities.

Which candidate to choose A helpful website, which was launched last week is www.whichcandidate.ie. The site, since going live, has had over 70,000 hits and helps voters to compare which candidate or party is right for them. The site, or the App, is easily accessible with the user asked a series of multiple-choice questions. A set of relevant policy issues was se-

lected by the research team in advance of the election. Election candidates were contacted to complete a questionnaire on these issues. Each participating candidate is given a public profile on the website, incorporating their answers to the questionnaire. Users are then matched with who is most suitable to their own interests/beliefs based on the 2020 issues that are most important to them.

IF I COULD VOTE STUDENTS HAVE THEIR SAY

Barry Loughnane Eabha Rudden, Second Year, St

Brigid's Secondary School "They are all making promises that won't come through. They should be giving younger people a better insight into the election."

Aoife Cronin,

Second Year, St Brigid's Secondary School "I think we should have a say in the election. We should be part of it because it's our future."

“There’s going to be no great change in Kerry for the seats. The fight is really happening in Tralee. They’re all trying to make political points, they’ve done good. I always voted for what was good at the time I don’t really follow anyone.”

Why young people should vote Young people do have a choice in our future. I initially didn’t really think about voting and thought it was a waste of time. After discussing this topic with my colleagues, I have changed my mind. In general, young people are active speakers of their surrounding environment. Whether it’s supporting an idea online or taking action outside, young people are skipping schools to participate in protests on topics such as cli-

mate change. Young people do have a voice and it is indeed heard. You have the right to vote. If you don’t vote then you don’t have a say in who the TDs are and that means you don’t have a say in healthcare, social welfare, the law, education, employment and many more areas. You should choose someone who you think will work hard on your behalf.

YOUNG VOTE: Nineteen-year-old Grigoriy Geniyevskiy is encouraging young people to get out and vote in tomorrow's General Election.

Sean Casey

“They have all these plans, why didn’t they do them when they were in Government. The money should be put into health services. There’s no law and order left in this country. Every day I worry for my daughter when she’s finished work. She would be walking alone down the street. Housing is also a problem. Everyone did something. Some have made mistakes, but we all learn from them. I didn’t look much at the debate. Fianna Fáil always looked after the working men. They voted for rent freezes and said it was unconstitutional."

Huge support for 28th annual coffee morning | By Francis Foley Over 130 people turned up to raise funds for the Friends of the Children of Chernobyl coffee morning yesterday (Thursday).

Mother’s Day fundraiser planned for little sick girl Two local ladies are pooling their talents together to help raise funds for a sick little girl suffering from Cerebral Palsy. | By Michelle Crean Photographer Tara O'Donoghue Laing from Firies has enlisted the help of Killarney singer Grace Foley, and arrange a special day out for families this March. And, although the event, which includes a photoshoot, a three course meal and entertainment in The Brehon Hotel on Sunday, March 22, is a treat for families – it’s a hugely important day for little Heidi Patterson as funds raised with go towards vital physiotherapy. Heidi was born in 2017 to Sinead and Steve Patterson, with a visual and hearing impediment and Cerebral Palsy. Tara came to know the family after photographing the couple’s wedding in 2015. And as her own son is one age with Heidi, Tara felt she wanted to help in some way. “My son Dáithí is only a few months older than Heidi,” Tara told the Killarney

Advertiser this week. “I could really relate to how Sinead is going through this as a mom. I felt that surely we can make some bit of difference to relieve some of the financial difficulties. I’m hoping to raise €5,000 from the event which would cover physio for a year for Heidi. We wanted to use our own skills to give the most we can on the day.” The event includes a raffle with lots of great prizes donated by local businesses, including dinner vouchers, spa treatments, hair and nail vouchers and even sports jerseys. MC on the day will be former Kerry footballer Sean O’Sullivan. The family will also be there on the day, Tara added. “Sinead will give a brief talk before the meal and Grace will sing a number of songs for the finale, including Heidi’s favourite song ‘True Colours’.” Tickets at €45 per person are available from eventbright: Mother’s Day Fundraiser for Heidi.

Held in the Killarney Golf and Fishing Club, it was the 28th annual event and organisers are hoping it raised between €2000 and €2500 for the cause. For 28 years the Friends of the Children of Chernobyl Killarney branch, have held their annual coffee morning to raise funds for the child victims of the Chernobyl nuclear reactor disaster which occurred in April 1986. Yesterday morning’s gathering was organised by Joan Buckley, who has a long connection with the charity. “I first got involved with the Chernobyl

children’s cause when I decided to take some children from Belarus into my home in 1993 to give them a holiday, away from the conditions they were living in,” Joan told the Killarney Advertiser. “And now one of those children, Natasha Meleshko, sends her children to come and stay with me, it’s quite wonderful really. The people of Killarney are very generous, even in the hardest of times for themselves,” said Joan. The funds raised are used to improve the living conditions of the children in Belarus, this includes improvements to their schools, good clothing and anything else they need that will help them in their daily lives. “We get them things which may seem completely normal to us but are real luxuries to them.”

“Let vacant bedrooms solve social housing crisis,” says Mayor | By Sean Moriarty A novel solution to the rent and accommodation crisis has been put forward by Mayor of Killarney Cllr Michael Gleeson. He wants Kerry County Council to invite property owners in Killarney town, Rathmore town and in the villages of Kilcummin and Barraduff to indicate if they have unused portions in their residences available for letting through the Council to individuals or families.

Kerry County Council will shortly undertake a public campaign on various letting and leasing schemes in order to encourage property owners to consider making any vacant property available to the Council as part of its Social Housing Programme. “If such a scheme is successful it would provide much needed accommodation for people in need of a home, and it would also re-invigorate locations that have experienced population decrease,” Cllr Gleeson told the Killarney Advertiser.

Fexco opens €21m research and development facility EXCLUSIVE

Irish-international fintech company Fexco officially opened its €21m Research Development and Innovation Centre in Killorglin on Wednesday.

BLOOD DONOR: Bridget McGuire from Killarney, who has been donating blood for 42 years is encouraging people to make a difference. Photo: Francis Foley

After 42 years Bridget is still donating! For 42 years giving has been a huge part of one woman’s life as Killarney woman Bridget McGuire has to date donated 50 pints of blood. | By Francis Foley It takes just half an hour to donate one pint – but for Bridget from Dennehy's Bohereen, it’s so much more as giving blood is so satisfying and worthwhile. Bridget started giving blood in 1978, and plans to continue giving blood for as long as she can. Bridget’s reasons for donating blood are quite straight forward and simple, as she explained to the Killarney Advertiser this week. “The shortage of blood in the national blood banks is huge, so the more people that can give the better the situation will become.” She added that the satisfaction you can get from helping others is a good feeling. “The thought that one day your own family or friends may need a transfusion is an added reason to make it worth doing.” In Killarney there are about three donation sessions a year, each lasting for approximately a week in certain venues in the town. The next sessions in Killarney will be during the summer and the actual time,

dates and venue will be advertised locally in advance. You can either register with the Irish Blood Transfusion Service before you go or just turn up on the day. Donors are given a questionnaire at the beginning to see if they are suitable to donate, as some people may be rejected due to ill health or an on-going blood condition. These questions vary from your age to if you have had a tattoo or piercing in the last four months. There is also a simple blood test for suitability administered by staff at the venue on the day. “It is completely painless and you don’t feel a thing while you’re being prepared for the donation or during it. This is helped by the excellent staff that attend to you by putting you at ease, and by the tea, coffee and biscuits you receive afterwards,” Bridget said. Once donated all the blood is tested again for diseases, making sure it is completely safe before distributing it to hospitals around the country. Donating blood is quick, easy and very rewarding for the donor. “You’ll never know when you might need someone else’s blood yourself one day.”

125 Fexco staff are to be based in the centre and RDI Hub and there’s plans to create 305 direct jobs by 2024. The state-of-the-art 57,000 sq ft replaces the manufacturing plant closed in 2012 – and, it’s dedicated to renowned Stanford University computer scientist John McCarthy, one of the founders of the discipline of artificial intelligence. The facility was opened by Minister of State for Transport and Sport Brendan Griffin, and the CEO of Enterprise Ireland Julie Sinnamon. The project is backed by Fexco, IT Tralee and Kerry County Council. The west wing of the building was donated by Fexco to become the home of RDI Hub, and house 136 people on its programmes and in its co-location space. RDI Hub was established last year as a not-for-profit public-private partnership facilitating innovation and start-ups in the fintech and artificial intelligence (AI) sectors and in this initial period plans to support the establishment of over 35 high-tech funded start-ups. Its colocation with Fexco’s Research Development and Innovation Centre will add value for both parties through increased availability of specialised labour and knowledge spill overs. RDI Hub will provide training to over 1,300 partici-

pants and support 140 apprentices on its programmes in its first five years. John McCarthy’s father was born in Cromane, near Killorglin. His two daughters, Susan and Sarah, and his son Timothy were at Wednesday’s opening of the building to unveil a memorial plaque to their father. The site on which the new building has been developed used to be the home of a manufacturing facility latterly owned by US firm Simpson Manufacturing, which closed in 2012 with the loss of 30 jobs. The Government has supported its transformation into a location that will support innovation, growth and entrepreneurship in the Southwest with €3.6m in funding for RDI Hub from Enterprise Ireland. “This new building signals our commitment to providing world-class innovative fintech solutions to a global audience as well as supporting our local community, through job creation and local investment,” Denis McCarthy, CEO of Fexco said. “Since our foundation in Killorglin in 1981 we have been able to grow our business to employ over 2,500 people in 29 countries, whilst keeping our headquarters and the driving force of the business at home here in Kerry.”

Commercial water charges on the increase | By Sean Moriarty Members of the Kerry branch of the Irish Hotel Federation have expressed concern following Irish Water’s decision to increase water charges in Kerry. The new charges will come into effect on May 1 - just as the 2020 tourist season gets underway. Irish Water wants to streamline water charges across the country. Currently, Kerry, outside of the Tralee area, is the third cheapest in the country at €1.93 per cubic metre. Wicklow is the most expensive at €3.04 per cubic metre. Irish Water wants to increase the charge of incoming water to €3.50 across the

country to make charging “more equitable and not to unduly discriminate between customers”. Local businesses learned of the changes after Irish Water officials visited some hotels in Killarney last weekend. For some businesses water charges could double and there will be a further increase in costs of disposing of waste water. However, hoteliers and other businesses in Killarney have raised concerns that this is another increase in the cost of doing business. “This is massively worrying for all our members,” Tracy Coyne who was speaking on behalf of the Kerry branch of the IHF and the newly formed Kerry Tourism Industry Federation said.

CHANGES: Off shore rowing is growing in popularity. The All-Ireland Coastal Rowing Championships were held in Dingle last summer and over 600 competitors took part. Photo: Valerie O’Sullivan

Olympic plans could change local rowing traditions Rowing Ireland held a public open meeting in Killarney last night (Thursday) to discuss the national governing body’s plans for offshore rowing, which is set to become a new arena for the sport on the international stage. | By Sean Moriarty The sport’s world governing body, FISA, is behind a plan to include offshore rowing in future Olympic Games. This is in response to increasing pressure by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to replace existing codes in favour of adding new events. Favourite to get the chop are the lightweight classes, a category where Irish rowers have excelled in the past.

Local Olympic hero Paul Griffin represented Ireland in the Athens Olympics (2004) and finished sixth alongside fellow Muckross oarsman Cathal Moynihan in the lightweight coxless four final in Beijing four years later. The lightweight four event has already been culled since 2016 and the sole lightweight boat at Olympic level is now the double sculls. During the 2016 Games in Rio de Ja-

neiro, the O’Donovan brothers of Skibbereen won silver behind France in the lightweight double sculls, the first rowing medal won by Ireland in the Olympics. Tokyo 2020 may be the last time the lightweight double features as an Olympic event. However, offshore rowing is growing in popularity, to the point that Muckross Rowing Club will soon take delivery of its first offshore quad boat. This growth in offshore rowing is offering new opportunities for rowers countrywide, including local rowing clubs in Killarney. A new summer league has been announced for this season with regattas

taking place in Kerry, Cork, Wicklow, Wexford, Donegal and Antrim and there are over 30 clubs competing nationally offshore. “A simple analogy would be cycling when they started to include mountain biking alongside the road races,” Muckross Rowing Club PRO Tim O’Shea told the Killarney Advertiser. “It won’t mean the end to lightweight rowing, but it might present alternative opportunities to get local rowers to the Olympics and further grow the sport nationally. Offshore rowing is a very different skill in a different style of boat, you are fighting currents and waves where the Olympic style of rowing as we know it requires mostly calm conditions.” Depending on the next move by the IOC, offshore rowing could be included in the Olympics as early as Paris in 2024 and Rowing Ireland is getting ready. The discipline is already confirmed for the Youth Olympic Games in Senegal in 2022.

Grandparents go back to school for the day! | By Grigoriy Geniyevskiy It has been many years since they sat in a classroom to learn - but that didn’t stop grandparents from joining in the school fun on Friday last – as they turned up to celebrate Grandparents Day. Over 100 grandparents turned up to Gaelscoil Faithleann in Killarney, where children got to show off their classrooms and their artwork, while the school bands performed for the grandparents. Secretary of the school's Parents' Council, Mary Carroll explained to the Killar-

ney Advertiser, that it’s the third year they’ve held it in the school and it’s growing every year. “It wasn’t very formal,” Mary told the Killarney Advertiser. “The grandparents told the children their stories of how school was back in their day such as their teachers and classrooms. The children loved to hear their stories.” They received a blessing from Fr Tom Looney on the day and partook in some of the St Brigid’s traditions. “It was a day to make connections as some lived outside Killarney as well. We try to do whatever we can to bring the school community together.”

Public meeting on future of men’s basketball A public meeting to discuss the future of National League Men’s Basketball in Killarney will take place in Scott's Hotel, Killarney on Wednesday next, February 12 at 7.30pm. National League basketball returned to Killarney in 2017 after a nine year absence and Scotts Lakers St Paul's have enjoyed very successful campaigns on the court since then. The side is currently in second place on the division one men’s table and may be in a position to challenge for promotion to the Superleague. Crowds at Killarney Sports Centre over the past three years have been among the biggest attendances across the divi-

sion one and Superleague. Clearly there is an appetite and support for top flight basketball in Killarney and club officers are anxious to generate feedback to plan for the future of the game in the town. This public meeting is open to everyone and all views and opinions will be welcome and appreciated. Killarney has a strong and proud basketball tradition dating back several decades. The Scotts Lakers National League committee are appealing to anyone who has been involved in basketball over the years to make a special effort to attend. It is open to past and present players, officers and supporters, parents of juvenile players and also to people who never played or were involved in the game but are interested in airing their views.

There is a huge juvenile participation of over 400 young players in St Paul's Basketball Club and having a senior team competing at national level gives these young players something to aspire to for the future. The presence of the Lakers American and European players involved in the coaching and development of the club's juvenile teams has been a very positive step in recent years and the emergence of more and more talented young players is encouraging for the future of basketball in Killarney. There is a proud tradition and great history of National League basketball in Killarney. The late Paudie O'Connor and the Gleneagle St Vincent's brought in the first Americans to Irish Basketball in

1979, and enjoyed National League success at the time. St Vincent's competed in the National League until 1987. St Paul's Basketball Club, founded in 1985, first entered the National League in 1993 and competed at Superleague level until 2008 and division one until 2009. St Paul's returned to National League action in 2017 under the Scotts Lakers banner and have established themselves as one of the top teams in division one since then. A big turnout at the public meeting next Wednesday night would certainly demonstrate the support for the continuation of National League basketball in Killarney.

The first and second placed winning teams in each category will now go on to represent their school at the Chapter 23 Kerry and West Limerick Regional Quiz on Sunday, March 1 in the Ballyroe House Hotel, at 2pm.

During the month of December, Kilkenny offered a complimentary wrapping service around the country across its 17 stores nationwide, encouraging shoppers to donate what they could to the vital services that each store's nominated local charity offers. Now an annual in-store tradition, everything raised was matched by Kilkenny Group resulting in this significant sum divided and donated to charities including the Irish Cancer Society, Gary Kelly Support, Kerry Cancer Support Group, Cois Nore Cancer Support, Cancer Care West, Circle of Friends, and Cork ARC.

Each of these not-for-profits creates a community for survivors, families, patients, friends, nurses, doctors, scientists, professionals, supporters and volunteers working together for and on behalf of people affected by cancer. “Kilkenny stores are seen by many as cornerstones in their respective communities and so we’re constantly looking for ways to give back,” CEO of the Kilkenny Group, Marian O’Gorman said. “Our customers have always been incredibly generous and so it was only fitting that we match their altruism and support local cancer support services in each store's locality. We hope it makes a difference.” For more information, visit www.kilkennyshop.com and keep up to date by following them on social media @kilkennyshop.

Jessie Buckley moves Renee Zellweger to tears Some of the world's biggest movie stars, including Renee Zellweger, Olivia Colman and Bradley Cooper, were wowed as they watched Jessie Buckley perform at the BAFTAs on Sunday night. The Killarney-born stage and screen star was performing at the awards ceremony in the Royal Albert Hall in London. Stars from the big and small screen watched her sing ‘Glasgow (No Place Like Home)’ from her hit movie ‘Wild Rose’, the story of a single mother from the Scottish city who tried to make it as a Country singer in Nashville.

The song, which was Oscar nominated too, has become a Glasgow City anthem and featured in the closing scene of the film. Her performance moved Hollywood legend Zellweger, who won a BAFTA for her role as Judy Garland in the biopic which also featured Jessie, to tears. "Jessie Buckley you are a superstar, I’m so proud of you for this evening. You elevate everything that you do, I love you and I admire you and I’m so grateful for our collaboration. Thank you for our friendship, thank you,” Zellweger said on stage while accepting her award.

This week I would like to extoll a little used, but very useful plant. The entire Rubus family is a forgotten one, but there are several varieties I would highly recommend, especially for those who have ‘bad soil’ and a windswept garden. Bad soil can be clay, sand, gravel, shallow, waterlogged or nutrient poor. Our friend the Rubus will grow in practically any soil, with any amount of wind battering it. Firstly, there is the Rubus tricolor ‘Betty Ashburner’, which is a low spreading plant, with small saucer shaped flowers followed by red, raspberry like fruits. It is excellent for ditches or gravelly banks. Do be aware however, that it will keep growing and can be difficult to control. It’s not recommended for a small garden. A smaller more contained type is Rubus rolfei ‘Formosan carpet’, has a more compact growth habit. Rubus spectabilis ‘Olympic Double’ grows to about 120cm or 4ft, has bright green foliage and fabulous double cerise pink flowers which are starting to come out now, and will continue to flower into the summer. It does sucker, so, again, not very suitable for a small garden. However, if you do have a ditch or a corner where very little grows, it is ideal. A larger variety is R. Benenden, which grows to about 7ft. It has lax arch-

GentleBirth instructor plans local workshops ing branches which in April are covered by large, single white blooms, having a bright yellow centre. They are often mistaken for roses in our garden! We have it growing in a wind tunnel, where all else has failed up to now, and it has thrived for several years. This variety does not spread too much. Rubus henryi var. Bambusarum is a climbing plant, with long lance shaped leaves and clusters of white to dark pink flowers. The flowers are not spectacular, though they are sometimes followed by red or black fruits. The beauty of this plant is again its functionality. It grows against any wall, remains evergreen and grows quite fast. These plants are all ornamental versions of the more common fruit bushes, R. fruticosa, the blackberry, and R. ideaus, the raspberry.

HEALTH & FITNESS Shakespeare sessions at Muckross School House

The two hardest parts of losing weight You may be shocked to hear this, but the two most challenging aspects of losing weight and getting healthy have nothing to do with nutrition and working out. You may be thinking, “Wait, aren’t those the only two aspects of losing weight?” Yes, eating correctly and staying active are the actions you need to take to reach your goals, but they are not the most challenging part. In fact the most challenging parts are actually: 1. Thinking that you do not have to change your habits 2. Thinking that it will happen fast

In essence, the most challenging parts have nothing to do with the actions that you take, but more to do with how you think about the entire process. Anyone can start eating healthy and start working out, but the mindset and expectations you go into it with matter. Where most people fail is doing it for the long term-months and years of implementing healthy habits. Be honest with yourself before starting the process. Consider the fact that your current habits got you to where you are and it took you years to get there. When you can accept that you will have to change your current habits to reach your goals and that it will take time, you will be on the path to success.

Shakespeare’s plays for Junior and Senior Cycle students are coming to Killarney next month. Cyclone Rep, Ireland’s leading Shakespeare Theatre-in-Education Company will stage three plays: Hamlet, King Lear and Romeo & Juliet in Muckross School House from March 18 to 20. “Shakespeare’s works are made relevant for teens today while respecting the language and the texts’ most important aspects and scenes,” Edel Carmody, The Cyclone Rep Team, said. “The sessions feature audience participation, discussions on key themes and question and answer segments in a fun and energetic way.” Cyclone Rep’s updated version of King Lear is set in the near future where the earth is an apocalyptic wasteland. Romeo and Juliet see Shakespeare himself transplanted to the modern age and at odds with the group of actors he is directing. Arguments, discussion and enlightenment ensue! In the spirit of Shakespearean theatre, the sessions highlight both the physicality of the era’s acting and the humour of the works. “Cyclone Rep also offers resource packs to aid study. This year marks 10 years of Cyclone Rep, we are a registered charity and one of the longest running provid-

ers of theatre in education workshops in Ireland.” Performances run for two hours with no interval. Hamlet takes place on Wednesday, March 18 at 9.45am, Merchant on Wednesday March 18 at 1pm, King Lear on Thursday, March 19 at 9.45am, Romeo & Juliet on Thursday on March 19 at 1pm, while the Romeo & Juliet show on Friday, March 20 at 9.45am is sold out. Tickets cost €15 per student, teachers and SNAs go free. For more information you can visit www.cyclonerep. com. For enquiries and bookings, you can email info@cyclonerep.com or call 021 235 5356.

Families celebrate baby Aaron’s christening The Horgan and Doyle families from Gneeveguilla and Barradubh joined forces on Saturday to celebrate the christening of baby Aaron Doyle.

FAMILY FUN: James and Eileen Buckley, Marian Terrace, Killarney, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with their family in The International Hotel on Friday night. Included are their daughters Antoinette and Aoife and sons Diarmuid, Jamie, Kenneth and Cian, grandchildren Keith, Keeva, Evan, Emma, Faye, Dylan and Mardia and Jamie O'Connor. Picture: Eamonn Keogh

Born on December 12 to proud parents Ciara and Shane Doyle from Barradubh, Aaron is the younger brother of twoyear-old Saoirse. After the ceremony at the Church of the Sacred Heart in Barradubh, conducted by Fr Rahilly, the family continued the celebration at the International Hotel in Killarney. They were joined by proud doting grand-

parents Mary Horgan, Patrick Doyle and Brenda O'Connor for a great day of celebration. Godparents were Ciara’s brother Donal Horgan and Shane’s sister Lorraine. “It was a great day out, we had a lovely time with family and friends,” said Ciara. “Shane does a bit of rallying so maybe we have a second rally driver in the house.”

Golden celebration for James and Eileen

It’s been half a century – but the years have passed in the blink of an eye for James and Eileen Buckley – who, on Friday night, gathered with family to mark 50 years of wedded bliss Saturday, January 31, 1970 was the big day for James and Eileen, at St Mary’s Cathedral and The Three Lakes Hotel (now The Killarney Plaza Hotel). A golden wedding anniversary is just as special as the big day itself, as the couple gathered with their family in the International Hotel on Friday night to mark the momentous occasion. They met at a basketball match at the old parish hall in Killarney. James was well known as a painter and decorator in Killarney and spent most of his working life with the Southern Health Board with the maintenance department in St Finan’s Hospital. He was also a regu-

lar on the Talter Jack’s Darts Team and contested several Murphy Cup finals in his career. Eileen, who was born in Knocknagoshel and grew up on Park Road, was on the staff at the Great Southern Hotel and the Mercy Laundry, but with the arrival of six children she spent most of her time as a dedicated mother and housewife. On the night, the Marian Terrace couple gathered with their six children and seven of their eight grandchildren. “It was a quiet family affair, they prefer it that way,” their son Diarmuid said. “We surprised them with a trip to Lanzarote.”

The Good Detective

RELEASED: FEBRUARY 7

By John McMahon

'Locke & Key' revolves around three siblings who, after the murder of their father, move to their ancestral home in Massachusetts only to find the house has magical keys that give them a vast array of powers and abilities. Little do they know, a devious demon also wants the keys, and will stop at

nothing to attain them. From the cult graphic novels of Joe Hill (Stephen King's son) and Gabriel Rodriguez, this series hails from the co-writers of 'Lost', 'Bates Motel' and 'The Haunting of Hill House', so that should give you an idea what to expect.

Marc Almond Chaos And A Dancing Star PRICE: €13.99 Marc Almond is back with a new album ‘Chaos And A Dancing Star’ and hoping to build on the success of his previous album ‘Shadows And Reflections’ which gave him his highest solo chart placing to date.

Detective P.T. Marsh was a rising star on the police force of Mason Falls, Georgia – until his wife and young son died in an accident. Since that night, he's lost the ability to see the line between smart moves and disastrous decisions, such as when he agrees to help out a woman by confronting her abusive boyfriend. When the next morning he gets called to the scene of his newest murder case, he is stunned to arrive at the house of the very man he beat up the night before. He could swear the guy was alive when he left, but can he be sure? What's certain is that his fingerprints are all over the crime scene. The trouble is only beginning. When the dead body of a black teenager is found in a burned-out field with a portion of a blackened rope around his neck, P.T. realises he might have killed the number-one suspect of this

This is the second album made in collaboration with Chris Braide. The result is a very productive collaboration with an interesting mix of dark ballads, bright pop and the occasional nod to their joint love of prog rock.

A WEEKLY ROUND-UP OF NEWS • VIEWS FROM KERRY AND AROUND THE WORLD

Record-breaking astronaut back on earth Record-breaking NASA astronaut Christina Koch, who spent 328 days in space, has landed back on earth

Refurbished €3.7m mental health unit officially opened A newly refurbished €3.7m mental health unit with a homelike environment to reduce the institutional feel – was officially opened on Friday last. Minister for Mental Health, Jim Daly, officially opened the Sliabh Mis Approved Centre in Tralee, a 34-bed mental health admission unit within University Hospital Kerry. Since 2015, Sliabh Mis has undergone a significant phased programme of refurbishment, which has brought about a significant upgrade in accommodation for people in Kerry needing admission to an approved centre. The programme of works included up-

grading the existing accommodation for inpatients at the Reask and Brandon wards, and developing the Brandon Unit, a four-bed high observation unit. The investment has allowed Cork Kerry Community Healthcare and Kerry Mental Health Services to create a warm and welcoming environment and atmosphere at the unit, and will enable the delivery of a safe, effective, quality service in a therapeutic environment for people using the service. The team at Sliabh Mis were recognised at the 2019 Cork Kerry Community Healthcare staff awards for their work at the unit. “The newly refurbished unit represents a significant upgrade in accommoda-

tion for service users requiring acute inpatient stay, and will enable the service to meet regulatory compliance in relation to premises,” Head of Mental Health Services with Cork Kerry Community Healthcare, Sinead Glennon, said. “The clinically informed, patient centred design of the unit is intended to reinforce treatment goals and the positive expectations of staff and service users. The design also aims to provide a more homelike environment where possible with a reduction in the institutional feel of the unit.” Dr Darra Phelan, Executive Clinical Director with Kerry Mental Health services added that the unit’s mission is to seek to obtain the optimum level of mental health well-being and quality of life for each individual person it serves through the provisions of a high quality, responsive and person-centred care.

Christina made her first trip to the International Space Station and broke the record for the longest single spaceflight by a woman. She also made the first all-female spacewalk with fellow NASA astronaut Jessica Meir. Koch had said of that first spacewalk; "We caught each other's eye and we knew that we were really honoured with this opportunity to inspire so many, and just hearing our voices talk to Mission Control, knowing two female voices had never been on the loops, solving those problems together outside. It was a really special feeling". Koch returned to earth along with European Space Agency astronaut Luca Parmitano and Russian cosmonaut Alexander Skvortsov. The Soyuz spacecraft carrying the astronauts landed near Zhezkazgan, Kazakhstan.

Trump survives impeachment As predicted by the Killarney Advertiser weeks ago - President Donald Trump managed to survive his impeachment. Senators voted Wednesday to acquit President Trump on both articles of impeachement. Trump became the third president in the history of the United States of America to be impeached. The senate is controlled by Trump’s Republican party so the chances of him being impeached were practically none - and so was the case. Only one Republican broke rank to vote with

Democrats: Utah Sen. Mitt Romney, who voted to convict Trump on the abuse of power. Trump had said that Americans "have been put through a terrible ordeal by some very dishonest and corrupt people". The accussations about withholding $400m USD in congressionally approved military aid in order to pressure Ukraine’s new president into launching an inquiry into his 2020 Democratic rival Joe Biden, and Mr Biden’s son, which got Trump into the impeachment position may be long forgotten. Trump has emerged from the im-

peachment stronger as he showcases his exclusive and secure hold on his own party. Trump has hit 49 percent in a Gallup presidential approval poll this week - reinforcing the idea of his future presidency. Overall, the US Senate is not representative of the country, which supported the inclusion of witnesses and records at the trial as a whole, a measure opposed by Republicans. His rival’s attempts to remove him from office backfired and we could potentially be looking at another four years of Trump Watch in this very publication!

Dr Patricia Sheahan has been named the ‘2020 Kerry Person of the Year’ by the Kerry Association in Dublin. Listowel native, Dr Sheahan has been recognised for her outstanding dedication and commitment to cancer patients in Kerry, and her tireless efforts in providing one of the country’s most highly regarded palliative care service units. Dr Sheahan has worked as a palliative medicine consultant in Kerry for the past 17 years, while also developing a fully integrated palliative care service for the people of Kerry, alongside Kerry Hospice Foundation. She is highly regarded by her colleagues, patients and their families, as well as the wider community of Kerry and West

Cork, where she also leads a community palliative care team. Kerry Association Chairperson, Keelin Kissane, noted that the 2020 winner has touched the lives of most families in the county and those families attest to her extraordinary sensitivity and compassion, going above and beyond the call of duty. The 'Kerry Person of the Year' award, which is now in its 41st year, dates back to 1979 when Dr Michael Carmody became its inaugural winner. Its list of high-profile winners makes it one of the most sought-after accolades for any Kerry person. Dr Sheahan will be formally presented with her award at the annual Oiche Chiarraí gala dinner on Saturday, March 28 at the Red Cow Moran Hotel in Dublin.

Newly built Wuhan hospital looks like prison A video has surfaced on the internet, showing the inside of the Chinese hospital built in 10 days amid fears of the Coronavirus – but its interior looks like prison! On Monday, China claimed to have completed the Huoshenshan Hospital in Wuhan to house 1,000 of the city's residents infected with the novel Coronavirus (2019nCoV). The quick construction of the hospital was greatly proclaimed by the Chinese and vastly broadcasted by the Western

media. However, the dissident organisation Himalaya Global leaked a video on its Twitter page on Monday which was apparently secretly filmed by a Chinese contractor inside the new facility. The video starts with the contractor introducing the Spartan interior of Ward 1. The Himalyan Global Twitter account had also tweeted; “Windows wielded shut, doors could not be opened from the inside, items delivered from the small window well”, which could all be seen in the video.

A funeral is an average of €4,062 but costs vary greatly in different parts of the country.

According to new research carried out by An Post Insurance, they have estimated the various costs of a funeral. The highest average costs were €5,000 in counties Sligo and Clare, while the lowest of €3,408 was recorded for Co. Wexford. The highest price quoted to researchers for a standard funeral was €6,310 in Co. Tipperary These costs include paying for funeral directors, removals and a coffin, but exclude church offerings and the cost of burial plots. The survey outlined the vast differences between the cost of plots in different cemeteries, even in the same county. Research also found that a standard

coffin is most expensive in Kerry and Laois where it cost €2,000 and most affordable in Waterford at €1,177. The costs of coffins in Dublin and Cork was found to be rates of €1,750 and €1,399. The cost of coffins varies greatly based on the choice made by a family of course, but the An Post Insurance survey estimates average cost based on a “standard coffin”. The highest cost quoted for a double plot in a graveyard was in Deansgrange in Dublin where the price was €32,000. The same sized plot in Shanganagh Cemetery near Shankill was €5,600. In terms of cremation, the survey found that it was most expensive in Cork at €770, behind Dublin at €682 with the lowest cost in Galway at €527.

Forget stress – relax and unwind

With all the rushing and racing all the time we forget to take time to smell the roses which can leave us feeling tired, wound up and stressed out . It’s important to take time to relax and unwind. With shops open every day we seem to need to go shopping more often than ever. It’s time to take time out and unwind or the body will crash and burn. We wouldn’t drive our cars without servicing them, but yet we expect our bodies to keep going. There are many benefits to having a regular Swedish massage or even a hot stone massage. It can enhance our physical and mental well-being and promote deep sleep making us more alert when we wake up. It can also improve muscle pain, increase circulation which increas-

5

es the lymphatic flow and metabolism. Improving circulation can have a number of positive effects in the rest of the body; including reduced fatigue and pain management. Massage is a great way to work our problem areas like lower back pain and stiffness throughout the body. Before a massage your therapist will ask you if there is anywhere in particular that is causing you issues, and tailors the treatment to your individual needs. Massage helps to eliminate toxins by stimulating the soft tissues of your body helping to release toxins through your blood flow and lymphatic systems. Also regular massage helps to improve flexibility by loosening muscles to achieve full potential of movement, in turn this will boost your mood, and stimulate the lymph nodes to recharge the body’s natural defence systems. Alleviate depression and anxiety by releasing endorphins in your body helping you feel happy, energised and at ease. For the month of February we are offering Buy One Get One Free, and these offers are valid for one year.

The Parkavon Hotel

New name and look for the Holiday Inn The Holiday Inn on Muckross Road has rebranded as The Parkavon Hotel Killarney. Built in 1998, Holiday Inn operated under the IHG umbrella for 21 years and was the only branded hotel in Killarney. Dublin based design team CI Studio managed the rebrand. The team came across Parkavonear Castle, the 13th-century Anglo-Norman ruin in Aghadoe overlooking the Lakes of Killarney. The name was shortened to Parkavon – thus The Parkavon Hotel.

“We are thrilled with the hotel name, the branding and design,” Hotel General Manager Stephen O’Connor said. “The hotel remains in the same ownership and it’s great to see the staff and management from the old brand take this journey with us.” The Parkavon Hotel is open all year around, serves food daily and is a great location for drink, watch a game on the big screens or a venue for a party to mark any occasion. www.parkavonhotel.com or call 064 6633000.

Ford tops January car sales charts The Ford Focus was the most popular car sold in Kerry in January according new figures by the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI). The figures show that 49 version of the Focus were sold in the county since January 1. Many would have been sold by local Ford dealer Killarney Autos. The second most popular car in the county is the Toyota Corolla with 42 new cars hitting the roads in the first five weeks of 2020. Bowler’s Killarney is the local Toyota dealership making January a successful month for local dealers. In total, there were 721 new cars sold in

Kerry in January. The Peugeot Partner, available from Reen’s Car Sales, Rathmore, is the biggest selling van in the county with 18 new ones registered so far this year. The Ford Transit Connect is the second most-popular with 16 versions leaving showrooms last month. A total of 183 new vans were sold in January. Interestingly, while sales of petrol and particularly diesel engined-cars dropped, there has been a significant increase in the sales of either electric or hybrid cars as 139 models were sold in January.

Why buy Husqvarna Automower®? If one of the selling points of future robot technology is to take the strain out of our lives, then surely having a robotic lawnmower is right up there at the top. Who wants to waste hours tediously manicuring their lawn? Perhaps the most impressive attributes of a Husqvarna Automower® is its durability and control. Low-noise drive motors now have an expected working life of more than 10,000 hours, which far outperforms a petrol mower’s engine life of about 500 hours. Plus, the use of lithium-ion batteries means each mower produces almost twice the power than just five years ago, and the batteries are fully rechargeable in just an hour. But it’s the control of the mower that is truly futuristic. Although you can operate your Husqvarna Automower® by control panels under their plastic bodies, cutting a lawn is something that can now easily be done on a mobile phone App from anywhere in the world. Want to re-programme lawn mowing to twice a week - do it via the App. Change the height of the cutting blades, change the time of the

cut, check the machine’s exact position via Google maps – it’s all available on the App. And soon you will be able to instruct your automower via your Alexa smart speaker. The ultrasonic sensors in the mower have also become more sophisticated. They keep the machine within its boundary wire pegs as well as allowing it to slow down before it hits any object – and, perhaps best of all, the robot mower is able to carry on cutting grass even in the rain, as well as cutting so often that the clippings become mulch, which feeds the lawn after every cut. If you’re interested in finding out more about Husqvarna Automower®, then why not drop into your local dealer, O’Neills Power Equipment Milltown and Tralee 066 9767163.

NEWS BRIEFS... Progress on Fossa NS pedestrian crossing

8 6 3 5 4 2 7 1 9

Kerry County Council have agreed to submit an application to Transport Infrastructure Ireland that will include a proposed pedestrian crossing adjacent to Fossa National School. The move comes following numerous representations and the taking place of a deputation that Maura Healy-Rae requested in March 2019. The formal application will be forwarded to the TII in the next week. “The TII will then consider the feasibility of this proposal,” Maura Healy-Rae said. “I will campaign and lobby to ensure that the TII approves this, which will drastically improve the current, precarious safety issues that children, parents and staff are facing. I believe this is a major step in the right direction as KCC initially did not support our request for a pedestrian crossing in the area. Through continuous representations by the parents, Principal Clifford and myself, there is now positive progress.”

In loving memory of Joanie Angland, who died on 8th February 2019. Kind was your nature, True were your ways, We will treasure your memory Mom, For the rest of our days. As we remember our mom on her first anniversary the above words spring to mind. She would be the first to acknowledge all those who befriended her and assisted her in her 95 years, especially those in her later years. We as a family wish to thank and acknowledge those who cared for her in her final years. All who came to visit her, the home care team, especially Marie Waters, Breda Kelly and the public health nurses. Our deepest gratitude to Tarrants Funeral Directors, Ballydesmond, who steered us through Mom’s last journey with such empathy, to Fr. Joe for a beautiful Mass, and Paud, Mary and Michelle for the wonderful music. To Mary and staff in Bob’s Bar & Restaurant, Ballydesmond, who helped us to give Mom the send-off she would have wanted, thank you. Margaret, Mossy, Johnny and Eileen. Together with our families please accept this acknowledgement as sincere gratitude.

We, her family, would like to thank all those who sympathised with us on our sad loss. Those who attended the Rosary, Funeral Mass and Burial, who sent Mass Cards and travelled long distances. We would also like to thank our relatives, neighbours and many friends for the wonderful support during and after the funeral, and those who called to our homes and brought refreshments. To Betty’s work colleagues in the Kerry Mental Health Services who provided a guard of honour, we thank you, it was very much appreciated. Also thank you to Fr. Kieran O’Brien who was and is so supportive, for celebrating a beautiful Mass and moving homily. Thanks also to Paud and Mary for the beautiful music and singing. To Michael and Mary O’Shea and staff for their sensitive and professional handling of arrangements. We trust that all accept this acknowledgement as a token of our appreciation. In loving memory of a dear Husband and father Denis Breen, Late of Hazelwood Drive, Upper Park Road, Killarney, formerly Knocklebede, Kilcummin, who died on 10th February 2017.

And down that path of memories, We softly tread today, All our thoughts are with you, As life goes on its way. And life has gone on so sadly without you, The day’s have turned to years, But each day has held a thousand memories, And a million silent tears. Always loved and never forgotten by your loving sisters, brothers, sisters-inlaw, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews and extended family.

NOVENA TO THE SACRED HEART Dear Heart of Jesus in the past I have asked for many favours. This time I ask you this special one, (mention favour). Take it dear heart of Jesus and place it within your heart where your Father sees it. Then in his merciful eyes it will become your favour not mine. Amen. Say this prayer three times for three days and your favour will be granted. Never known to fail. Must promise publication of prayer. M.M.

Kerry head to Tyrone in search of second win on the bounce

CLUTCH: Killian Spillane celebrates his injury-time winner against Galway. Pic: Diarmuid Greene/Sportsfile.

They left it late but Kerry got their first win of the decade against Galway last Saturday night, thanks in part to a terrific winning score by second-half substitute Killian Spillane (pictured). Now The Kingdom are hoping to really build some momentum by picking up another two points, this time away to old rivals Tyrone. The journey will be long and the reception cool but if Peter Keane’s men show the grit that got them over the line last weekend, they will give themselves every opportunity. That being said, improvements will be necessary. Kerry were uncharacteristically loose in possession against The Tribesmen and, in truth, were fortunate that many of their errors went unpunished. They coughed up far too many goal chances and their hosts on Sunday might not be as wasteful as Galway’s forwards were in Tralee. A major positive for Kerry was the performance of Micheál Burns, who was a late replacement for influential centre forward Seán O’Shea. The Dr Crokes man gave an excellent account of himself on the 40, working tirelessly throughout and posing problems with his direct running style and accurate kicking. He swung over two fine scores (the second from an unfavourable angle) in a swashbuckling display that certainly won’t have escaped the attention of Peter Keane and his selectors. Fellow Killarney man James O’Donoghue also caught the eye in the first half and his withdrawal at the interval understandably caused consternation amongst supporters around the ground. Peter Keane later suggested

Tyrone v Kerry Sunday at 2pm Healy Park, Omagh that the Legion player was not injured and that he simply wanted to give Tommy Walsh game time. Kerry fans making the long journey north will hope to see the in-form forward back in action this weekend. Walsh also impressed as O’Donoghue’s replacement and Liam Kearney staked a claim for the No. 8 jersey with a solid showing i lár na páirce. One would expect both to feature again in Healy Park. Seán O’Shea is expected to make his return after a minor illness but Tadhg Morley, Brian Ó Beaglaoich and Adrian Spillane are injury concerns ahead of the Tyrone clash. Their availability at this point is unknown, although Peter Keane is unlikely to take any risks at this early stage of the season. As always, Kerry will name their starting 15 tonight (Friday) at around 8pm. Tyrone were unable to follow up their opening day triumph over Meath as they fell to a tough 1-12 to 0-11 defeat away to Monaghan on Sunday last. With Cathal McShane (apparently AFL-bound), Mattie Donnelly (injured) and Paudie Hampsey (injured) all currently unavailable, Mickey Harte’s side is not at full strength at the moment. Kerry will be slight favourites to prevail but they never have it easy in Tyrone: their last victory in Healy Park came all the way back in 2009 when Gooch scored 2-3 in a 2-10 to 0-13 win.

send Kerry in two points to the good (010 to 1-5).

AUSTIN STACK PARK

The second half was all about Galway forward Shane Walsh. The Kilkerrin/ Clonberne clubman gave Kerry’s standin full back Gavin Crowley a torrid time of it and his brilliant solo goal in the 58th minute gave Pádraic Joyce’s team their first lead of the game. Walsh quickly added a point to make it 2-11 to 0-14 and the away side seemed to be well on their way to an impressive victory. A 10-minute stalemate followed but with McDaid in the bin, Kerry pressed forward. Geaney showed a cool head to draw the hosts level in the 71st minute and when Clifford’s late effort cannoned off the post three minutes later, Tommy Walsh was on hand to gather the rebound and offload to Spillane for the winner.

Kerry

1-15 | Galway 2-11

Galway led by three as this match crept into additional time but the dismissal of Cillian McDaid – sin-binned for a rugby tackle in the 63rd minute – proved costly as they tried in vain to keep Kerry at bay. An expertly taken goal by poacher Paul Geaney set up a grandstand finish and Killian Spillane nailed a left-footed effort in the 74th minute to send the visitors home empty-handed. In truth, it was more than the home team deserved.

Kerry exploded out of the traps in front of the 11,000-plus crowd in Austin Stack Park and captain David Clifford gave his side the lead within seconds of the FORM PLAYER: Kerry's James O'Donoghue is marshalled by Johnny Heaney of Galway. Micheál Burns swung over a fine score in the sixth minute and when Clifford added a free two minutes later, Kerry were 4-1 up. Luckily for Kerry, Galway spurned a number of goal chances in the first half, although corner back Johnny Heaney did rattle Shane Ryan’s net with 18 minutes on the clock to keep his side in contention. O’Donoghue added a second before Comer (mark) and Daly drew the westerners level, but Stephen O’Brien and Clifford popped over a pair of points to

Damien Comer had a last ditch opportunity to salvage a point for Galway but, much to the relief of the boisterous home crowd, he hooked his shot wide on the near side.

PRESSURE: Kerry midfielder Liam Kearney exerts some pressure on Michael Daly of Galway. Pic: Diarmuid Greene/Sportsfile.

Kearney, Burns and O’Donoghue impress | By Eamonn Fitzgerald

Killarney Advertiser columnist Eamonn Fitzgerald runs the rule over Kerry’s narrow victory over Galway Kerry have to win their home games if they want to reach the final of the National Football League and they got it right on Saturday night last when they edged out an unlucky Galway side by a single point. Kerry stole this one and the manner of the result was a big disappointment for Galway, who impressed with their new style of expansive play under new boss Pádraic Joyce. They lost their chance in the opening half when they had four clear chances of goals and only scored one. Kerry led by two points at half-time, when in reality Galway should have been ahead.

PLAYER RATINGS

Shane Ryan did well, but I would much

prefer to see him take more long kickouts. We have good fielders in midfield and the short kickouts are putting extra pressure on an already struggling defence. The much criticised defensive sextet were under fierce pressure, especially in the first half. Liam Kearney had a great game at midfield and is progressing well in his quest to pin down a permanent spot for the future. Jack Barry was a tired player after his efforts with Na Gaeil, but he will come good. We know that the forwards are good and in the absence of Seán O’Shea, Micheál Burns had his best game ever for Kerry. Just like he did against Dub-

lin, his darting, route one runs to goal unsettled the Galway defence and he added two valuable points. He almost had a late goal, but Gleeson saved well for a 45. Dara Moynihan came on late. He deserves more game time. James O’Donoghue excelled in that first half, kicking two points. He played deep and his runs through the middle caused plenty of problems for Galway. Why was he brought ashore at half time? Surely he needs more game time after his long layoff. Everything did not go right for David Clifford on this occasion, but he still shot six points (three from frees). Uncharacteristically, a few of his efforts dropped short into the goalkeeper’s hands. He can’t be perfect every day, so I have no concerns about him. It was good to see Paul Geaney scor-

ing 1-2, especially that all-important late goal. As usual, Stephen O’Brien did a great job tracking back when the need arose. It was a very enjoyable occasion: a packed attendance, great lights, not a shadow in sight and a wonderful playing surface which didn’t cut up.

CORN UÍ MHUIRÍ

St Brendan’s had a good win over Rochestown in the Corn Uí Mhuirí semi-final. Hard luck to Rathmore who lost out after extra time to Tralee CBS. It was a great achievement for such a small school to go so far in the competition, playing against other schools who have larger enrolments. And congratulations to your ever helpful local librarian, Eamonn Browne, on Na Gaeil’s recent achievement. He is a great club stalwart.

‘Traditionalism trumps basic common sense’ Kerry clubs vote to keep old captaincy rule despite mounting opposition

| By Adam Moynihan The captain of the Kerry senior football team will be selected by the county champions again in 2021 after a motion seeking to defer that decision to the team’s manager was defeated at a county board meeting on Monday night. It’s not the first time this motion has been shot down (and it might not be the last) but critics of the existing rule were hopeful that this would finally be the year. A number of important voices have openly called for change, most notably ex-players like Tomás Ó Sé and Kieran Donaghy, the previous bainisteoir Eamonn Fitzmaurice and even current players who know what it's like to have the full weight of the captaincy thrust upon them. Speaking on Monday, Kerry GAA chairman Tim Murphy said that Peter Keane and his management team were also in favour of the motion as “they feel they have been entrusted to represent Kerry and win All-Irelands… [and] they feel the current system doesn’t necessarily allow them the best chance of doing so.” In the end, 50 clubs listened to the men at the coalface and voted in favour of the motion, but 48 voted against; a majority, but not the two-thirds majority needed to abolish the long-standing practice, which is only adhered to by Kerry and the Kilkenny hurlers.

REMARKABLE

To be honest, I think it’s fairly remarkable that some club officers assume to know better than Peter Keane when it comes to deciding what’s right for his team.

The men making these calls are by and large completely removed from the inner workings of the Kerry senior football team, they don't know how an intercounty dressing room works in 2020, and they don't understand the kind of pressure modern-day footballers are under. Surely it makes sense to listen to the people who do? There’s no denying that certain delegates from championship contenders voted to stick with the status quo because the current system is likely to result in footballers from their own clubs being nominated in the future, and to an extent I get that. We all want one of our own to captain Kerry. It’s a big deal for any club. Naturally, this being Kerry, thoughts immediately turn to August and the prospect of a homecoming. But are officers really comfortable with potentially hurting the chances of their county winning an All-Ireland just to improve the chances of their own club having a captain? There seems to be this attitude in certain quarters that all is rosy in Kerry’s garden, and that there’s no need to alter the way we do things. “If it’s not broken, don’t fix it” is a common refrain around these parts. That’s all well and good – unless, of course, it actually is broken. This might come as a shock to Kerry supporters of a certain vintage but the 1980s (aka The Golden Years) were 40 years ago. Things haven’t been so spectacular since. Powered by all-time greats like Colm Cooper, Seámus Moynihan and the Ó Sé brothers, Kerry won five All-Irelands in

the 2000s but the 1990s (one All-Ireland) and the 2010s (one All-Ireland) were the county’s two least successful decades since the 1890s. Of course, allowing the county champions to choose the Kerry captain isn’t the sole root of these relatively barren spells, but you have to ask yourself the question: has it helped?

FAILED

Looking at the recent past in particular, it's clear that the system has failed. Of the last six nominated captains, five have not started in, or have been dropped for, Kerry’s final game in that year’s championship. The other was withdrawn at halftime. When Kerry needed leadership in their biggest moments, more often than not their nominated captain wasn’t even on the pitch. And that’s not to be critical of any of the guys in question. They are all excellent players and in many cases they simply had the captaincy imposed upon them at inopportune times, when they were either new to the team or not guaranteed starters. In other instances, they were simply unlucky. Back in 2018, Shane Murphy was captain on his championship debut. Whatever about the team, how is that fair on him? That same year, Micheál Burns was hand-

ed the captaincy in Murphy’s absence and he later admitted that it adversely affected his performance. Maybe it was "time to look for the most experienced and well-placed person”, he noted. In recent years, being asked to captain Kerry was a bit like being asked to sleep with the Queen. It’s a great honour, but no one wanted to do it. David Clifford may well have captained Kerry at some stage if it were up to the manager, but at 21 years of age? I don’t think it will phase him because he’s a freak of nature and nothing does, but if the Kerry captain was selected by general election then I doubt Clifford would have put his name on the ballot. Not yet, anyway. I find it bizarre that club officials in Kerry will readily sign off on large sums of money for the latest gym equipment, nutritionists and sports psychologists, presumably to give their team every possible edge in a sport that has become increasingly aware of the fine margins, but when it comes to something as fundamental as choosing a team captain, they’re willing to leave it to chance. This week’s outcome is a disappointing one for many observers, although in truth I doubt anyone is massively surprised. This is the GAA, after all, where blind traditionalism often trumps basic common sense.

Killarney Celtic are through to the last 16 of the FAI Junior Cup following an emphatic away victory over Buncrana Hearts in Donegal. Free-scoring striker Stephen McCarthy was the undoubted star of the show as he bagged a fantastic hat-trick – including a spectacular scissors kick – while Danny Roche also added to his tally for the season with a strike in the 63rd minute. That made it 4-0 to the visitors and a late Hearts goal via Dean Fullerton counted for little as the Kerry champions secured another famous FAI Junior Cup win. The Killarney side will now face Crettyard United away in the next round. Crettyard, who are based in Laois but play in the Carlow District League, defeated Glenthorn Celtic of Cork 3-0 in the last 32. This weekend Celtic are back in league action as they take on Tralee Dynamos in Celtic Park. Kick-off this evening (Friday) is at 7pm.

BLUES

Killarney Athletic got back to winning ways on Sunday with an impressive 4-1

victory over Fenit Samphires in Tralee. With the game tied at one apiece heading into the last half an hour, Athletic brought on Shane Bunyan and the veteran attacking midfielder made his mark. The substitute scored one and assisted another as the Blues took control of the game, Will Courtney (his second) and Ian Prendergast rounded off the scoring. Stuart Templeman’s side have a crucial home game this Sunday morning as they welcome league leaders Castleisland to Woodlawn.

MEK GALAXY

Premier A newcomers MEK Galaxy were unable to secure their first victory of the season on Sunday as they fell to a 3-1 defeat away to Listowel Celtic. Tadhg Fleming gave Galaxy the lead but goals by Michael Kennedy, Ashley Kelliher and Darren Loughnane turned the tie in Listowel’s favour. Galaxy will have another opportunity to get off the mark this weekend when they travel to Tralee to play fellow promoted side Classic FC.

Big National League game to be staged in famous old hall | By Adam Moynihan Saturday night will be filled with nostalgia for Killarney sports fans as National League basketball returns to the Pres Gym for the first time since 2008. With Scotts Lakers’ usual home venue, the Aura, being used as a general election count centre, St Paul’s had to find an alternate court for Saturday’s clash with Ulster University and the decision to return to the Pres is sure to prove popular with locals. St Paul’s first played at the facility on the grounds of St Brigid’s Secondary School in the eighties and over the years it has been the site of some of the greatest moments in the history of Killarney basketball. “The Pres Gym opened in 1984 and the Gleneagle Killarney team played National League games there from 1984 to 1987,” St Paul’s PRO Eamonn Keogh explains. “St Paul’s, playing under the Revelles and Kerry Spring banner, played senior National Cup and league games there from 1992 until 2000. “With the formation of the Gleneagle Lakers, many National League matches took place at the INEC during the noughties, while some fixtures also went ahead at the Pres Gym until 2008.”

Scotts Lakers v Ulster Elks Saturday at 7.30pm Pres Gym Coincidentally, this weekend’s fixture comes almost 25 years to the day from one of the most memorable games in the club’s storied history. “On Saturday, February 11, 1995, St Paul's Killarney enjoyed an incredible 105-104 win over Sligo All-Stars after double overtime,” Eamonn recalls. “It was 86 points each at the end of normal time and 96 each after the first over-time. “Match MVP Terry Smith gave a monumental performance with a huge 36 points while his American colleague Greg Ford also added 36. The team was coached by the charismatic Joe Coughlan and they also had outstanding displays from local players Pat O'Shea, Brian Clarke, Cormac O’Donoghue and James Fleming. “Over 700 supporters filled the Pres Gym that night and the victory guaranteed promotion to the Super League.” St Paul’s are hoping for a big crowd again this Saturday night as Killarney basketball makes its return to one of the town’s favourite sporting venues.

The eight-round series gets underway with the Azores Rally next month and visits the Canary Islands, Latvia, Poland, Italy, the Czech Republic, Cyprus and Hungary. Now I’m really looking forward to embarking on this journey in the European Rally Championship.

“It will be a great adventure to get back to some rallies I’ve done in the past, along with some new rallies. It will be a great year with MRF Tyres, BRC Racing Team and Hyundai Motorsport. I’m looking forward to the Azores Rally and getting the program started.” Breen and Nagle forfeited their chance to contest last weekend’s Rally Legend Boucles de Bastogne in Belgium to allow themselves more time to prepare for their surprise return to the WRC. |

O ’Sullivan amongst frontrunners in Wales

The British Rally Championship kicks off tomorrow (Saturday) with the Cambrian Rally in North Wales and Killarney-based co-driver Noel O’Sullivan is amongst the frontrunners. The Muckross man is on pacenote duty for Welsh driver Osian Pryce who

is making a return to the series after a two-year absence. They will field a Hyundai i30 R5 in the six-round series that visits England, the Republic of Ireland, Belgium, Northern Ireland and Scotland between now and next September. O’Sullivan will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of fellow Killarney man Mikie Galvin who won the British title in 2017. It marks the start of a busy period for O’Sullivan who hopes to contest the following weekend’s Rally Sweden alongside Jon Armstrong. O’Sullivan is due to fly from Manchester to Karlstad on Sunday as the recce for Rally Sweden starts on Monday – that is if the rally goes ahead at all. There is a severe lack of snow in the Varmlands region of Sweden and it is not safe to run the rally without snow.
