Cllr Gleeson calls time political career which spanned almost 40 years

Cllr Michael Gleeson’s shock decision to retire after almost 40 years in active politics - which he announced at Wednesday's Killarney Municipal District meeting - marks a real end of an era on the local political landscape. | By Sean Moriarty Cllr Gleeson surprised his elected Council colleagues by announcing his news at the end of the meeting that it was to be his last as an elected local representative. It brings a very dynamic, effective and dignified four decades of active political representation to a close, according to Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce. The Killarney-based business group was just one of many organisations and individuals to pay tribute to the proud Spa GAA man. “Tagann deireadh le gach rud is mó – all things must come to an end,” the former Killarney town mayor told the meeting. “Life is about to change as I bid farewell to public life.”

ELECTED

Mr Gleeson was co-opted to Kerry County Council in 1983 for the Labour Party. He retained the seat in the 1985 local elections until 1991. In 1999 he was re-elected to Kerry County Council for the South Kerry Independent Alliance and served until the present time. Michael also served on Killarney Urban District Council and Town Council for

many years from 1994 to 2014. He also served as Mayor of Killarney on several occasions during that time. “I won’t miss it,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “I have been singularly blessed in life that I can move on, and that the past can quietly recede. I played football and I was a teacher and when I retired from both they all but disappeared.” Mr Gleeson will attend the next full meeting of Kerry County Council but will not be present at the July Killarney Municipal District meeting. Kerry Independent Alliance will need to select a candidate to replace Mr Gleeson on both Councils but no decision has been taken yet. “I hope they select someone who will improve on what I have been trying to do,” he added.

TRIBUTES

His surprise announcement prompted a flurry of tributes from his Council colleagues.

“A man of tremendous integrity,” Killarney Mayor Brendan Cronin said. “He had a long and distinguished career in politics and I am sad to see him retire,” Cllr Niall Kelleher said. Mr Kelleher is also the President of Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce. “He always put the welfare and the well-being of his people, his town, his county and society first and his was a strong and influential voice for all,” he said as Chamber President. “I never tired of hearing his eloquent speeches,” added Cllr Marie Moloney. “Look at his record – he made Killarney a better place,” Cllr Niall ‘Botty’ O’Callaghan said of his time in politics. “His years of service are tremendous and admiral,” Cllr Maura Healy-Rae added. “Michael served Killarney and Kerry very well,” Cllr Donal Grady said. Colleagues in the Council’s executive also paid tribute. “He had the good of the town at heart,”

ETB to open Killarney campus | By Sean Moriarty Kerry Education and Training Board (KETB) is to set up a campus in Killarney and have been invited to look at the former Pretty Polly site as a suitable location. It is hoped the new Further Education and Training college will be operational by this September and that it will offer several courses including those aligned to the hospitality industry.

Killarney Municipal District officials and senior ETB managers are due to examine the former factory today (Friday) to assess its suitability as a campus. When the Pretty Polly factory closed in 2009 it was handed over to Kerry County Council to be used to create new job opportunities in the town. The local authority did receive a number of expressions of interest in the site but, so far, nothing has progressed. There are no guarantees that the ETB will find the premises suitable for their

plans but this is the most significant move to date to secure a tenant for the former factory. Today’s meeting was made possible by Cllr Marie Moloney who is also a Kerry ETB board member. Cllrs Niall 'Botty' O'Callahghan and Maura Healy-Rae also played a role in securing today's visit. “It is fantastic news for the town, they have already told me they hope to run hospitality courses in Killarney,” Cllr Moloney told the Killarney Advertiser.

said town manager Angela McAllen, while Corporate Affairs SEO Pádraig Corkery added “I think honour and distinction are the two most suitable words for Mr Gleeson’s time in politics.” Mayor of Kerry, Patrick O’Connor-Scarteen, said: “He has always been a man of integrity and honour, he was never afraid to make hard decisions. As a man of great faith, he was guided by his morals and principles in doing what he felt was best for Killarney, Kerry and its people.” Minister Norma Foley added that Cllr Gleeson was “a man of immense integrity, wit and generosity, proud of place and proud of county". "We in Kerry have been the beneficiaries of his wonderful eloquence, enormous talent and considerable wisdom. Michael is deserving of a rich and happy retirement."

KILLARNEY LIFE

The Chamber of Tourism and Commerce said Cllr Gleeson can reflect on a job very well done when he looks back on his contribution to his town and his county, be it as a hugely respected teacher in the Presentation Monastery, as a local bard and scholar, as a community volunteer, as a member of Killarney Town Council, Killarney Municipal District Council and Kerry County Council, and as a very stylish and accomplished footballer with Kerry and his beloved Spa club. “Michael Gleeson’s life in politics mirrored his life as a footballer in that he worked hard, he prepared well, he enjoyed great success, he left his mark and, at all times, he played the ball and not the man,” Mr Kelleher said. “I advised them to show an interest in the Pretty Polly site but we have to wait and see what they say after the visit.” Kerry ETB is looking at a number of sites in the town. The Killarney Advertiser understands that it's under time pressure as it wants to be able to deliver courses in time for the new academic year which begins on September 1. “We are fully committed to opening a Kerry College campus in the Killarney area, featuring a range of education and training options. We are currently exploring a number of possible locations,” an ETB spokesperson told the Killarney Advertiser.

Plans on the table for school traffic management | By Sean Moriarty

ANTI-SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR: Members of Killarney Celtic FC have called on the Council to address anti-social issues in the Ballydribeen area. Pictured are: Tim Jones, Cllr Niall Kelleher, Cllr Niall 'Botty' O'Callaghan and Killarney Celtic FC Chairman Paul Sherry. Photo: Michelle Crean

Concerns raised over anti-social behaviour Officials from Killarney Municipal District are to set up a working committee with all stakeholders to address anti-social behaviour in the Ballydribben area. | By Sean Moriarty The move follows calls from Killarney Celtic FC who brought an online deputation, through Cllrs Niall Kelleher and Niall ‘Botty’ O’Callaghan, to Wednesday’s Killarney Municipal District meeting. Club chairman Paul Sherry told the meeting of the difficulties the club faces as a result of continued anti-social behaviour in the area. “I can list off various incidents of damage, trespass and all sorts of anti-social behaviour at all times of the day and night, and it has even become a sport now for some of these young people to be found running along the apex of the roof of the clubhouse, putting their lives at risk,” Mr Sherry told the meeting. As the meeting progressed it soon became apparent the issues raised by the club are only a part of the problem in the area. Mr Sherry called for Kerry County Council to secure property adjacent to the club’s playing fields. The site, owned by the local authority, had previously been set aside for use by Kerry Stars, but that project has been delayed due to funding and the site has become derelict. “While I have asked that you look at securing the property, I feel very strongly

that this is more than just a simple case of installing a fence. I think that is the easy option but I believe we all know that it will not solve this problem. There are wider social issues at play here,” added Mr Sherry. The population of the nearby Ballydribben Estate has been growing in recent years but there are a lack of facilities for local youngsters and this is adding to the anti-social behaviour in the area, he explained. “The lack of provision of a local amenity or green areas for children for play purposes has not been a provision in these developments. In fact, at an information meeting of the residents prior to the last phase of development, when they raised the provision of playgrounds and green areas as an issue, they were directed to Killarney Celtic and Legion GAA Club by the developer as being ample provision.” Town engineer John Ahern told the meeting that he would put a fence around the Kerry County Council property and that he would clear rubble from the site as the first step. “Long term, there is need for overall engagement with all stakeholders,” he said. “The Ballydribeen residents need to come together with the club, and formulate a plan driven by the community."

Killarney Municipal District is to take a multi-tiered approach to solving traffic issues on New Road, particularly at school drop off and pick up times. Temporary measures proposed include the provision of extra clearly defined school bus set down areas. The street provides access to three secondary schools, two primary schools and one special needs facility – bringing an estimated 2,800 users to the area on a daily basis. The street is also home to the Killarney offices of the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Killarney Garda Station and several private houses. However, town engineer John Ahern wants to meet with the principals of each school either collectively or individually so he can outline various plans and ideas. “Killarney Municipal District Traffic Wardens had an increased presence on the ground in order to improve traffic flow. A survey of the road has been undertaken and preliminary designs of short-term measures have been developed and can be implemented subject to further consultation with the school principals and the members,” he said.

Long term Mr Ahern hopes to include New Road as an extension of the Killarney Cycle Way plan. The Killarney urban cycle way project includes the provision of cycle lanes on Rock Road. Killarney Municipal District has been successful in an application for funding from the National Transport Authority for its Transport Mobility Plan.

PRIORITY

“The New Road Schools Area will be included in this plan as a priority,” added Mr Ahern. A second round of funding is also available to schools who wish to implement a Safe Routes to School Programme. This funding is managed by An Taisce but Kerry County Council has allocated a member of staff to act as an Active Travel Officer to help schools in their funding application. “We have invited Expressions of Interest from all schools,” he added. Further plans include the possible realignment of the New Road junction with Rock Road but this will depend on many things including the constriction of the Cycle Way in the area, the setting back of the Garda Station boundary walls while taking into consideration the traffic volumes coming from Main St and St Anne’s Road into that junction.

Mixed reaction to Main St pedestrianisation plans | By Sean Moriarty A proposal to pedestrianise Main St on Saturdays and Sundays during the months of July and August has been put forward by the executive of Killarney Municipal District. Subject to a public consultation process, it is proposed to close the street from 11am on Saturday until 8am on Monday for the nine weekends during July and August. Council management said that on foot of research that the footfall on Main St during these times last summer was too high to accommodate social distancing measures in the area. The Council also said that this proposal is only for times and dates specified and that there is no intention to

extend this proposal further. “We observed footfall during 2020 and it was in excess of that expected, particularly during weekends in July and August,” District Manager Angela McAllen told a Killarney Municipal District meeting on Wednesday. The proposal received a mixed reaction from elected councillors with some saying that this is another attempt to fully pedestrianise the town centre while others supported the move. The current ‘Safe Streets’ plan introduced last July, had previously been extended to at least October of this year. The Main St plan is an extension of this scheme. The next step for the Council is to advertise the proposal in local media and engage with residents and business owners before the plan can be advanced or not.

School project shortlisted for two national awards

A group of TY students from Killarney Community College, 'The Connected Four', have been shortlisted for the Young Social Innovators of the Year Award.

| By Michelle Crean They were shortlisted under the challenge 'Make our country more inclusive and poverty free'. The group will pitch their project to a panel of judges, via Zoom on May 10. The group were also shortlisted for a Virgin Media Digital Media Award, a separate category by Virgin Media to recognise young people's positive application of digital technology for the purpose of social good and to promote digital well-being. The students also made a pitch to a panel of judges from Virgin Media yesterday (Thursday). The Connected Four include Luke O'Sullivan, Rachel Griffin, Amy O'Donoghue, Eva Lynch, Jack O'Connell, Lauren Fleming, Keelyn O'Leary, Lulu Healy and Ekaterina Gaeve. They aim to raise awareness about the false perception of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)/Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), Dyslexia and Dyspraxia

also known as Development Coordination Disorder (DCD), how the four are connected and the lack of education around these conditions due to a lack of accessible resources and supporting communities. The students have a very active Instagram and Facebook account with detailed information on the four conditions. They have written a book aimed at Junior Infants to Second Class to break down prejudice about these conditions at a young age. The students, with the help of funds and mentoring from the YSI Den, are hoping to publish this book both physically and digitally in the next few weeks. "We are extremely proud of this group's achievement thus far, highlighting key information and championing those diagnosed with four conditions which have previously been deemed to restrict or hinder a student's educational progression in the past. This group aims to shed light and understanding on the Connected Four," YSI coordinator Ms Cowley said.

Temporary closure of playground Knockreer playground was closed this week to facilitate repairs and a minor upgrade - but the good news is that it'll reopen today (Friday) and for the weekend. However, it will close again temporarily on Monday next (May 10) until Tuesday

May 11. Works on the playground were delayed as a result of the COVID-19 restrictions in place. The playground has seen a significant increase in usage as a result of the pandemic and these works will facilitate the safe enjoyment of the facility over the summer period.

Two Killarney lads are set to take on a marathon challenge this June Bank Holiday weekend to raise money for the Kenya Education Project. Friends Eamonn Sheehy and John Cronin, who took up running together 10 years ago, plan to run 42k around Killarney to raise much needed funds for the project which has been hit hard by COVID in the past 12 months. They set up their GoFundMe: 'Marathon fundraiser for Kenya' four days ago and have already raised over €300 of their €500 target. Eamonn is son of Eddie Sheehy who set up the Killarney based charity in 2003. He and John became friends during their time in The Sem and John explained that they took up running to get fit. "We run together because we weren't very good at football and to keep the weight off," John told the Killarney Advertiser. "We plan to run the marathon around the Demense, Ross Castle, out to Muckross House and back again." Every year since the charity was set up volunteers from Killarney and beyond have travelled to Embul-Bul village South

of Nairobi to work in the primary and secondary schools, the feeding programme and to help out with the soccer academy that was set up with the help of the project. "We have been exceptionally lucky to have been supported by the local people of Killarney and beyond since 2003 with donations that go straight to the people in the village," Eamonn said. "Every year children are sponsored in school and have their fees, uniform and books paid for with donations from Killarney people. The students are also fed every day in the school. Over one hundred children are also fed in the feeding programme on a daily basis also. This year our fundraising events have been curtailed due to COVID-19 but we have continued to receive donations too from people and we are extremely grateful to everyone who has donated." He added that the Kenya Education Project has been sending out €500 a month to Embul-Bul to pay for food parcels which are distributed to the families of the students in Brother Besaung School. "The aim of the marathon is to raise enough money to cover the cost of the food parcels for a month and hopefully make some form of a difference to the lives of the people in Embul-Bul."

RUN: Friends Eamonn Sheehy and John Cronin plan to run a marathon in June to raise funds for the Kenyan Education Project.

Dog park plan to be examined | By Sean Moriarty Officials from Killarney Municipal District are to engage with the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) in an effort to create a dog-walking park in Killarney. Cllr Brendan Cronin put forward a motion to build such a facility in town at Wednesday’s Killarney Municipal District meeting. He told the meeting that he had seen a similar successful project in Lucan, Coun-

ty Dublin. A Council official said that is does not have suitable land in its own ownership. “This is a very meritorious project and the Council has examined its land bank in the town but has not been able to identify a suitable site in its ownership. A funding source would also have to be identified for the capital investment and the operating costs. The Municipal District will liaise with the National Parks and Wildlife Services in relation to any potential suitable area they may have in their ownership,” a Council official said.

" You don't know how strong you are until you need to be" The community is rallying to help one local couple who told of their heart-breaking story on the national airwaves of how life has dramatically changed in the last few weeks after a shock diagnosis. | By Michelle Crean Diane Collins (37) and her husband Paudie (44), both Gardai in Killarney, were left devastated when they learned he was diagnosed with a stage 4 melanoma. Diane, who has a 22-month-old daughter called Tara Grace and is expecting their second child, has been helping wellknown freelance photographer Marie Carroll-O’Sullivan with her new charity book 'Behind the Mask' which tells the story of the people in the community during COVID-19. She went on the air last week on RTÉ's Ryan Tubridy radio show to raise awareness about the book and to tell their story. She described Paudie (44) as "a fit active man" who ran regularly, and is a "social butterfly" who doesn't drink or smoke. "This is completely out of the blue for us," she said. "Our lives have been turned up side down on an unknown road in the last four weeks. It's been heartbreaking, we've been shell shocked. Cancer has never really touched our lives before." However, she said that there is hope but that "the biggest obstacle is for the immunotherapy to work" and that he is "only one of 16 in Ireland who is having or has had this treatment". She praised Marie's project which will see donations given to the Irish Cancer Society and Pieta House (Nathan's Walk), and as a thank you to the COVID-19 staff at UHK - a treatment at the Killarney Plaza

Marie Carroll-O’Sullivan

Hotel Spa. "If anything good was to come out of this it's to "give back and to highlight this fantastic project"," Diane said. "We've gone from being one of the supporters of the charity to potentially becoming one of the beneficiaries," she added. "Diane and Paudie are exceptional community Gardaí in Killarney," Marie told the Killarney Advertiser. "Diane spoke so well with Ryan, so articulate, warm and composed. Even off duty with so much going on, she is still serving the community of Killarney and I am very grateful to her and Paudie for raising awareness for 'Behind the Mask' through their story."

Planning permission granted for 60 new homes in Rathmore | By Sean Moriarty Planning permission has been granted to build 60 houses in Rathmore. Elected members of Killarney Municipal District voted to accept the proposal at Wednesday’s Council meeting. Old Road Partnership want to build six one bedroom single storey houses, nine two-bedroom single storey homes, 27 three-bedroom terraced houses, six four bedroom houses, and 12 three-bedroom semi-detached houses in a greenfield site

in the centre of the village. The development will also require the demolition of a derelict house on Main St to allow vehicle access in to the new housing estate. “This will help to rejuvenate the village by bringing new residents to the area,” Kerry County Council engineer Damien Ginty told the Killarney Municipal District meeting. Cllr Niall Kelleher excused himself from this part of the meeting as he is a member of the Old Road Partnership and was concerned that engaging in the debate would be a conflict of interest.

Rare chalice from Killarney residence up for auction | By Michelle Crean A very rare and "exceptional" silver chalice from a prominent Killarney estate - is garnering huge international interest as it is up for auction this month. Buyers from America, Germany and even Russia are hoping to get their hands on the German Augsburg silver chalice which dates back to the mid1600s. It's due to go up for auction as part of a two-day sale of contents on May 15 and 16 next. The piece is so rare that Pat O'Donovan from O'Donovan and Associates Auctioneers and Valuers in Newcastle West, who have it and other interesting items from the estate, said that it's something that rarely comes to market. "Augsburg silver is highly sought after, it's exceptionally rare," he told the Killarney Advertiser. At 16 inches high, the chalice features religious symbols including scenes of Adam and Eve, snakes, deer and other wildlife. In his 15 years in the business and his father's 40 years he said they have never seen anything like it before and most likely won't again. He explained that they received a call a few months ago and were instructed

to sell the contents of the Killarney residence, which also included a huge collection of art works, but added he can't reveal the name of estate. "They knew they had something special but didn't know anything about it," Pat said. "It's so rare that you would not see the likes of it again. These are museum pieces." It's expected to fetch between €4,000 and €5,000, he added. "It probably wouldn't be the highest selling item but it is the rarest, something that you'd see in Christy's. As a piece of craftmanship it's exceptional."

In January concerned local residents brought a deputation to a Killarney Municipal District to raise concerns about the water supply in the area. The deputation, led by Cllr Niall Kelleher, who also lives in the area, told KMD officials that there was local concerns that

the water pressure in the area was insufficient in the event of a fire at Knockanes National School. Cllr Kelleher pressed for an update on the matter at this week’s KMD meeting. “Quotations for the provision and installation of the pumps have been received. An application for power supply has been made to the ESB. Work has commenced on constructing the concrete base for the kiosk for the pumps. It is planned that the pump station will come into operation in June 2021,” a Kerry County Council official told the meeting.

Calls for a Civic Reception to honour fire heroes | By Sean Moriarty A Killarney councillor has called for a Civic Reception to be given to the firefighters and volunteers who helped extinguish last week’s forest fires in Killarney National Park. Cllr Marie Moloney said she visited the National Park during the fires and witnessed first-hand the work the emergency services and volunteers did to quench the blazes. “I visited the area and saw how hard they were working, they had not slept in days,” she said. A Civic Reception is the highest public honour Kerry County Council can confer on an individual or group who have ex-

celled in their field or who have brought great success or enjoyment to the county. There are certain protocols to follow before a Civic Reception can be organised. Cllr Moloney has initiated these procedures and awaits the green light on the proposal. All such proposals are considered by the Council’s Corporate Policy Group (representative group of councillors) and scheduled when possible. If the proposal is passed, the Civic Reception could take the form of an event in County Buildings in Tralee or could be done on a local and municipal level in Killarney. Civic Receptions would also be the subject of any COVID-19 restrictions that may be in place at the time.

Several ‘Boy Racers’ fined over weekend Public realm plan gathering pace | By Sean Moriarty

Killarney Gardai issued a number of Fixed Penalty Notices to ‘Boy Racers’ who were in town on Saturday and Sunday night. The drivers were fined for Road Traffic issues and for breeching COVID-19 travel regulations. The May Bank Holiday weekend is the traditional date for the Rally of the Lakes but the event has not run since its 40th anniversary in 2019 because of the pandemic. Rally organisers, Killarney and District Motor Club have always distanced themselves from the 'Boy Racer' element who have tarnished the rally’s good reputation over the years. “We were disappointed to hear they were in town, as we always are,”

KDMC chairman Diarmuid Cronin told the Killarney Advertiser. “It just goes to show that this cohort of people will be in town if the rally is on or not and we are delighted to hear that Gardai dealt with them in the manner they did.” Killarney Gardai confirmed to the Killarney Advertiser that they placed extra patrols and checkpoints in the town to deal with a small number of ‘Boy Racers’ but said that by and large they behaved themselves. “They were generally well behaved but we did issue a number of Fixed Penalty Notices for Road Traffic and public health guidelines breaches,” a Garda spokesperson told the Killarney Advertiser. “There were no reports of blocking roads or damaging car parks like there was before.”

| By Sean Moriarty Kerry County Council is very close to appointing consultants to begin the Killarney Town Centre Public Realm Project - a major plan that will change the streetscape of the town. Last year KMD announced that they wanted to make the town “a world class urban centre”, by developing and improving the public spaces in Kenmare Place, High Street, New Street, Beech Road, Mission Road and College Street. There will be five stages in the process; public consultation, planning, design, construction and handover. At this week’s KMD meeting Cllr Michael

Gleeson asked about the possibility of including a pedestrian crossing on Mission Road near the entrance to Killarney House. "Following consultation with the TII, they have informed the Council the exact location of any proposed pedestrian crossing would be considered by them after the construction of the Muckross Road/Hahah Safety Scheme has been completed," KMD area engineer John Ahern said. "Kerry County Council shortly expects to appoint consultants to begin the Killarney Town Centre Public Realm Project. It is envisaged that the location of this pedestrian crossing would form part of the Beech Road design.”

Rebecca's work is 'Best Translation in Munster' | By Michelle Crean

Crokes plant the seed for a new green project

A Killarney teen has been awarded 'Best Translation in Munster' after taking part in a national competition by the European Commission. At a virtual ceremony on Friday morning, Fifth Year student Rebecca Doyle from St Brigid's Presentation Secondary School, was presented with her prize. Rebecca took part in 'Comórtas na hAistritheoirí Óga' and translated a document from English to Irish with her translation skills rated the best in Munster. 62 students from 28 schools took part in this competition.

Minister for State, Gaeltacht Affairs and Sport, Jack Chambers along with Seán Hade, head of the Irish Department in the European Commission both attended the awards ceremony. Rebecca also recently reached the Munster Final of an Irish Public Speaking competition 'Comórtas Óráide' run by Gael Linn. Rebecca spoke about issues such as 'Mental Health during Lockdown' and 'The suitability of the 2nd level curriculum for students in Ireland'. "Rebecca has done tremendous work over the past few months and has a wonderful passion for our native language. Sár-éacht ar fad a Rebecca!" her Irish teacher Michelle Clifford said.

Dr Crokes have launched a new initiative for the members of the Saturday Morning Academy - and it's set to grow beyond their wildest expectations. | By Michelle Crean As part of the Dr Crokes Health and Well-being committee, the 'Grow it Forward' project was launched by club chairman Matt O’Neill. The project has twin objectives; The young girls and boys will learn how to grow their own vegetables from seed on their own windowsill, or in a sunny back garden spot, then follow through to planting and to full growth, ready for eating, and they'll also learn to recycle and re-use plastic containers etc., that families get in their weekly grocery shopping. Free starter kits including seeds for lettuce, carrots, beetroot, peas, tomatoes and greens were distributed at the launch. Everything supplied is free and no previous gardening experience is necessary as full instructions and help from club members and keen gardeners, who will mentor the youngsters, will be available. Those involved in the project include Niall Keogh, Micheál Fitzgerald, Gene O'Doherty, Sinéad O’Mara, Risteárd Clancy, and Eamonn Fitzgerald. “I am delighted to see Dr Crokes' Healthy Club group engaging with our younger members in this way," Club Chairman

Matt O’Neill said. "It is fantastic for young people to learn and see for themselves the cycle of growth from seed to plant and on to something we can eat. There is nothing like eating something you've grown from seed yourself. We may have to open a Farmer's Market next year.” Parent David Byrne added that they moved into a new house in Knockeenduff recently and that this project couldn’t have come at a better time for his two boys, John (6) and David (4). "They were so enthusiastic when they got the starter kits that they were up early on the morning after the launch and tackled an old broken down section of the back garden, cleaned it up and made a raised bed. They found the 'Grow it Forward' video very helpful and easy to follow. This is a great community project by Dr Crokes for young players and it is great that they can call on experienced gardeners in the club, who will advise and encourage them on their new journey and it will be a journey from seed to table. Well done Dr Crokes.” If anyone wasn’t able to attend the launch and wishes to join up they can contact Eamonn Fitzgerald at the Academy on Saturday morning.

New road route to be unveiled next Friday | By Sean Moriarty The proposed new route from Killarney to Farranfore will be revealed to the public next Friday (May 14). The long-awaited details of the new road, delayed as a result of COVID-19 restrictions, will take the form of an online public meeting similar to the recent meetings that revealed Killarney’s new cycle ways and the Outdoor Dining Scheme. Engineers from the National Road Design office will unveil potential new routes be-

tween Farranfore and Killarney to elected members of Killarney Municipal District on Friday morning ahead of the public meeting later the same day. “The meeting will be the format of a virtual room, using the latest technology, and featuring videos and other online presentation,” area engineer Paul Curry said. “The meeting will focus on the new route but will include other public transport issues too.” Details of how to register for the online meeting will be published on www.killarneyadvertiser.ie in the next few days.

Gneeveguilla GAA pays tribute to club stalwarts Gneeveguilla GAA has paid tributes to two of the club’s greatest workers Noreen Cronin and Mai Murphy who passed away recently. Noreen, a native of Ballydesmond, was an active member of the club’s ladies committee. She acted as the club’s Child Welfare Officer in 2015 and served in this role for three years. “Noreen was ever-present at juvenile and senior games where Gneeveguilla was involved, in particular at juvenile games where there may be a dispute over what the score was you could always turn to Noreen who would be marking down every score on her notebook,” said club PRO Mike O’Keeffe. “No matter what the occasion Noreen brought an energy and enthusiasm to make our community and the people in Gneeveguilla a better place.” In more recent years Noreen served as the Child Welfare Officer on the East Kerry GAA Board. "As Chairman of the East Kerry Board, I am privileged to be asked to pay a tribute to my very fond friend and wonderful officer of the Board, the late Noreen Cronin O'Connor,” said East Kerry Chairperson Johnny Brosnan. "I have worked with many people over 50 years

within many different organisations and I must say that Noreen was one of the most organised and nicest individuals I have ever worked with throughout the years.” She was always very willing to help all committees within the board especially Scór and the East Kerry All-Stars Banquet. “Noreen loved everything about the GAA. She was extremely proud of her own club Gneeveguilla and was elated when they nominated her for Children’s Officer of the board. A lady with a fabulous personality and an infectious smile, she will never be forgotten particularly by all of us fellow officers of the East Kerry board,” he added. “On behalf of the board, I want to express our deepest sympathy to her family whom she adored especially, her husband Donal and sons Jerry and John.” Mai Murphy was another community activist in the Gneeveguilla GAA area. She was an integral part of the Tops of the Parish committee, either as an organiser or performances.

TRIBUTE: Noreen Cronin was an active member of both Gneeveguilla GAA and the East Kerry GAA board.

Highlights include winning an award in 1995 for her comedy sketches, the same year the village won the overall Tops of the Parish title. Mai ran a highly successful hairdressing business in Gneeveguilla. “Mai did outstanding work throughout the years as a hard working enthusiastic club officer, a loyal supporter of the club and was always willing to help in any way possible. I have no doubt the legacy Mai has left behind will be continued on by her husband Mike, sons Don and PJ, daughters Michelle and Amy, to whom we offer our deepest condolences.”

Fundraiser launched "Killarney best value for money" says councillor following fires | By Sean Moriarty A Ross Road man has launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds for the frontline workers who fought the recent fires in Killarney National Park. Matt Cornes was able to see the devastation unfold from his front window. It prompted him into doing something for those who worked tirelessly over three days to extinguish the blaze. “I am just an ordinary Joe Soap, but as

I watched what was happening I felt I had to something,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “It was heart-breaking to see it. I want to put the money towards the park, I know it’s a Government organisation, but they can put the money towards new stock, or towards the wildlife. If I get enough support I will divide it between the park, the fire services, anybody who played a part, they can do whatever they like with the money.” To donate go to GoFundMe: Killarney National Park Fundraiser.

| By Sean Moriarty A Killarney councillor has defended the town as a value for money destination. Cllr Niall ‘Botty’ O’Callaghan was reacting to national media reports that suggested that some hotels were charging excessive fees for accommodation during the summer season. Earlier this week a contributor to RTÉ’s Liveline Show was angry after claiming he was quoted €4,110 for a three-night hotel stay in Kerry this sum-

mer. The exact location of the hotel was not revealed. “Killarney is the best value in the country but some media have latched on to this €1000s and €1000s story,” said Cllr O’Callaghan whose family own the Fáilte Hotel on College St. A simple survey by the Killarney Advertiser seeking quotes for a twin room for three nights in July revealed that the average prices were in the region of €550 for the stay or around €90 per person per night for bed and breakfast in various town centre hotels.

Smiles and excitement as Legion kids get back on the pitch Killarney Legion GAA grounds at Direen was a hive of activity last Saturday morning with the welcome return of the much loved Underage Academy. |B y Michelle Crean Photos by: Shane Davies and Maria O'Sullivan Boys and girls from the ages of four to 10 flocked to the club grounds as underage GAA activity was given the green light to return. Underage Academy Coordinator Ted Healy has reported record numbers in attendance.

"There was fierce excitement around the clubhouse last Saturday morning when we welcomed our boys and girls back to training for the first time this year and welcomed new members to the club," he said.

"We saw great numbers attend on Saturday with the kids excited to get back to having fun on the GAA pitch and indeed lots of parents even more delighted to bring them along! Many of our kids got to experience our impressive newly laid sand based pitch for the first time and found that the ball bounces a little higher now! Our newly installed rebound walls are another great addition to our Academy this year and are proving very popular." A large equipment delivery last week

ensured all the boys and girls were well catered for with newly pumped footballs, bibs, cones, ladders, hurdles and poles at the ready, he added. "COVID-19 has not gone away of course and all the GAA return to play guidelines are being strictly followed ensuring the safety of both kids and coaches alike. Each age cohort has a COVID officer appointed to ensure all guidelines are being correctly adhered to and hand sanitiser stations are located at the entrance and exit to the pitch." Club registration is available online at legiongaa.com where one can also complete the necessary COVID protocols in order for a safe return to play. Legion Underage Academy continues every Saturday morning at 10.30am with new members always welcome.

Public Holidays during COVID-19 Citizens Information are receiving a lot of employment related queries regarding public holidays which are often referred to as Bank Holidays. We have had four so far this year in January, March, April and May, and have five more to look forward to in June, August, October, and two in December in 2021. On a public holiday, most businesses and services close for the day and most employees are entitled to one of the following public holiday benefits; • A paid day off on the public holiday • An additional day of annual leave • An additional day's pay • A paid day off within a month of the public holiday If you do not normally work on a Monday, then you are entitled to one-fifth of your normal weekly wage for that day. Part-time employees qualify for public holiday entitlement if they have worked at least 40 hours during the five weeks ending on the day before a public holiday. An employee should ask their employer which of the above applies to them at least 21 days before a public holiday. If the employer does not respond at least 14 days before the public holiday,

then the employee is entitled to a paid day off on the day. "During lay off or short-time working, you still are employed by your employer and your contract of employment remains in force," Frances Clifford, Kerry Citizens Information Manager, said. "This means that you are entitled to benefit from any public holidays that occur during the first 13 weeks of your lay off. For any employee needing advice or further information around public holidays and the implication of COVID-19, they can contact us in complete confidence, we provide free, independent and non-judgmental assistance and advice.” For anyone needing information, advice or who have an advocacy issue, they can call a member of the local Citizens Information team in Kerry on 0761 07 7860, they will be happy to assist and make an appointment if necessary. Driving test backlog challenged in Dáil | By Sean Moriarty Local TD Danny Healy-Rae raised the backlog of Driving Tests, Driving Lessons and Theory Tests in the Dáil yesterday (Thursday). There are an estimated 3,000 learners waiting for driving tests in Kerry alone as a result of the backlog created by pandemic-related shutdowns. He also raised concerns that the Car Theory Test is not available online but they are available for truck and bus candidates. Deputy Healy-Rae challenged Tanaiste Leo Varadkar and the Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan on the matter. “Why can’t the Theory Test be set up online for all vehicles? The Government

are supposedly working with the RSA to get the Theory Test online for over a year now – I ask why it is taking more than a year to get this off the ground?” he said. “Traditionally farmer's sons and daughters could do their Theory Test when they became 16 years of age, get their provisional license and drive a tractor to help out on the farm or get a job locally for the summer – this is not possible now. Now, young drivers cannot do the Theory Test, cannot get their provisional license, and can’t get on the road. It is essential for everybody to have a licence in rural Ireland. I am asking you Tánaiste to ask the testers to work on Saturdays and Sundays to deal with the backlog, and to ensure that the Theory Test can be applied for online for all learner drivers to get on the road.”

No extra parking at Torc Neither Kerry County Council or the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) are in a position to increase the size of the car park at Torc Waterfall. Due to the numbers of people visiting the popular tourist amenity, cars are often parked on the N72 Moll’s Gap road. This has raised concerns that emergency vehicles may be restricted in accessing parts of the National Park especially following last month’s forest fires in the area. Cllr Maura Healy-Rae asked the Council to provide extra parking spaces in the area. “I believe this is not an unreasonable

request given the serious safety issues posed with people parking along the main road as there is no space in the car park,” she said. Killarney Municipal District officials have spoken to NPWS officers about the provision of a car park at Torc. “The issue was raised at a meeting held between the members [elected KMD officers] and the NPWS, where they informed us that given its location within a Special Area of Conservation there was no potential to increase the size of the car park,” and Kerry County Council official said.

Rowers delight as they return to the water Last weekend there was a great buzz around Muckross Boathouse as members were finally allowed to return to training after being closed for 116 days. | By Michelle Crean Blessed with perfect weather conditions on Lough Leane, the water training sessions commenced at 7.30am for Junior 18 members and finished at 1pm for beginner members. All members of all age categories were thrilled to be back in sculling and sweeping boats with their teammates, Cox Shóna O’Sullivan from the club explained. "Zoom training sessions and the Virtual Easter Marathon Challenge helped members stay fit and remain active in the sport throughout lockdown," she said.

GARDEN MAGIC

Gardening - By Debby Looney

Debby is available for advice and garden consultations, just call 086 6088156 or email barnhillky@gmail.com

Growing a herb garden One of my favourite parts of the garden is the herb patch. I love the scent on a warm summer evening, the colours and textures of the plants, and of course, their practical uses. Whether you have space for a large formal style herb garden or only a few pots, it is definitely worth growing them. What criteria should you use for choosing your plants? Well, the obvious consideration is what you might use. Secondly, space, and thirdly, your growing conditions. The most commonly used herbs here are parsley, thyme and mint. They all like different growing conditions; parsley needs a deep rich, moist soil with some shade. Poor soil and full sun will make for a bitter parsley. Thyme likes a shallow poor soil in full sun. Give it parsley’s conditions and you will get a lot of tasteless, weak greenery. Mint likes deep soil in full sun, but be aware of its capacity to take over. A large pot is best for this plant. Italian herbs, such as oregano, marjoram, sage and rosemary are also easy to grow and widely used. I cannot imagine pasta without them! They all like well drained, slightly alkaline soil. If you have acidic soil, as most of us do, add a few handfuls of horticultural lime to the soil. French herbs such as tarragon, dill and chervil, are all shade loving plants which enjoy rich, moist soil. If the soil is too dry, they will bolt and go to seed very quickly. I always associate these herbs with fish dishes. There are herbs which deserve a special spot in the garden even if you will never put them in your culinary delights. One I love is fennel; I do not like the taste, but the foliage is so soft and feathery it just looks great. It is an excellent choice for a flower border too, especially the bronze variety. Growing up to five foot tall, it provides a beautiful backdrop for many flowers. It is also useful as the plant which provides others with some shade

and shelter from wind. Angelica is an old fashioned herb which is usually candied in sugar syrup. I grow it for its tall regal stature and large white flower heads. Coriander and fenugreek are two herbs I use a lot in Indian and Mexican cooking, however these need a sheltered spot. They don’t really like our climate, but are easy to sow indoors on a windowsill. Frequent sowings will give a constant supply. Basil is another favourite which does not do well outdoors. I keep them on a well ventilated sunny windowsill inside. Bush basil will do well enough outside if our summer is warm and dry, but treat them as annuals! Finally, wherever you situate your herb patch, make sure to provide yourself with some seating, so you can chill out with a mojito, made with your own mint, and enjoy the scents of a warm herb garden!

WEDDING

Noreen and Donal are a perfect match

7.5.2021

WEDDING OF THE WEEK

28

From their first date in July 2017 to their perfect day last Saturday - Noreen Horan and Donal Walsh are a match made in heaven. The couple, Noreen from Knockeenahone, Scartaglen, and Donal from Kyle, Cappamore in Limerick, got married on May 1 in Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Scartaglen. As with most weddings these days it was a low key affair in line with the current COVID-19 restrictions but the couple hope to have a party and invite all their family and friends in May of next year. The couple, who met online through match.com, were joined on their big day by their bridal party which was made up of Donal's brother PJ Walsh who performed Best Man duties, and Donal's two brothers-in-law Richard Meehan and Mark Delahunty. Noreen's Maid of Honour was Moira O'Connor and bridesmaid was Áine Herlihy who are her close friends. And their two flowergirls who looked so cute on the day included their 22-monthold daughter Sarah Walsh and Donal's niece Kate Meehan (3). Donal's father Ned made his first trip to Kerry for the wedding, while Noreen's parents and Donal's mother, who are sadly deceased, were especially remembered during their wedding ceremony. Other family that celebrated with them for the big day were Noreen's sisters and brothers Joan, Mary, Danny and Niall, Donal's father Ned, and sisters Mary and Bríd. Noreen's cousin Fr Dan Carroll, who is based in Pallaskenry in Limerick, officiated at the ceremony. And the weather

was perfect afterwards as the couple went to Aghadoe and Killarney Golf Club for their wedding photos with Ian Cronin Photography. "We met online through match.com and had our first date on July 27, 2017," Noreen told the Killarney Advertiser. "We got engaged last February when there was a storm and we never thought COVID would still be around. It was challenging and emotional at times planning our wedding in a pandemic, but it was never an option for us to postpone our wedding. We were getting married rain, hail, sunshine and COVID-19! The day was just perfect, everything went off as it should."

After the events of the first American computer animated comedy film, Max and Duke's owner, Katie, meets and marries Chuck and has a son, named Liam, whom Max disapproves of at first due to his rough play but eventually softens up to him. Later, Max's overprotective feelings for Liam develop into an itch which prompts Katie to get him a dog cone from the vet in an effort to lower his symptoms. Max's luck changes when Duke reveals that the family is going on a road trip out-

side of the city. On a farm outside New York Max meets a farm dog named Rooster, and both attempt to overcome his fears. Meanwhile, before Max left, he had entrusted his favourite toy, Busy Bee, to Gidget. Unfortunately, Gidget loses it in a cat-infested apartment owned by a cat lady. Caught between two warring forces and overcoming horrific trials to pursue their hope of immigrating to the West, the Martels’ story is a brutal, complex, and ultimately triumphant tale that illuminates the extraordinary power of love, faith, and one family’s incredible will to survive and see their dreams realised.

The Crayon Set ‘Don’t Step Back Too Far’ Dublin-based The Crayon Set have released their second single ‘Don’t Step Back Too Far’ taken from their forthcoming album. The Crayon Set specialise in hook-filled, alternative pop and their forthcoming album ‘Downer Disco’ set for release in September will be no different. Speaking about their new single, Robert explains “I was pleased when this song came along - I think it helped signal a new direction for the band. It had more of a groove to it - and it had a melancholic atmosphere that drew you in. Lyrically it is about feeling down and

Based on a real-life story, this novel by the author of the wildly popular 2017 novel 'Beneath a Scarlet Sky' focuses on the Martels, a Ukrainian family who fled Europe during Stalin and Hitler's terrorising reigns and began a long, arduous migration to freedom in Montan. In late March 1944, as Stalin’s forces push into Ukraine, young Emil and Adeline Martel must make a terrible decision: Do they wait for the Soviet bear’s intrusion and risk being sent to Siberia? Or do they reluctantly follow the wolves - murderous Nazi officers who have pledged to protect “pure-blood” Germans? The Martels are one of many families of German heritage whose ancestors have farmed in Ukraine for more than a century. But after already living under Stalin’s horrifying regime, Emil and Adeline decide they must run in retreat from their land with the wolves they despise to escape the Soviets and go in search of freedom.

losing a sense of yourself and your role in the world." Speaking about the upcoming album ‘Downer Disco’ Robert describes the idea behind the band was for it to incorporate different ‘colours’ i.e. musical styles and influences, for it to be diverse and not to be confined by any boundaries. "So, I think it will be a life-long project and it means it can continue and evolve even if some members might come and go over the years. But I am very reliant on the other crayons adding their magic."

SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL

Beauty - By Jill O'Donoghue

Jill is available for advice and beauty consultations, at Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio. Call 064 6632966

We're excited to be reopening! We have been given the green light to finally reopen our doors - and it's been a busy week of rescheduling our clients that had appointments booked for the New Year. After that we are working through a waiting list. I am asking clients to contact me via email info@killarneytoningandbeauty.com or call the salon number. I will get back to you if we can’t answer when you call. I am so thankful for all the support during the past few months via our online shop, calls, texts, cards of support. I have enjoyed talking to all the clients this week, it was very motivating and uplifting as they were all delighted to get an appointment and really looking forward to some well deserved pampering. I noticed the most treatments in demand were CACI non-surgical facelift and Sothys Anti-Ageing and Hydra 3HA Hyaluronic Facials, Swedish full body massage, pedicures, manicures, waxing, tinting, electrolysis and foot health. If you have been suffering from sore feet, corns, calluses, ingrown toe nails, hard skin, thickened toe nails, it’s important to have them treated correctly. Get in touch and we will arrange an appointment. These kind of pains can really af-

fect energy levels and mood. The relief you can get for the correct foot health treatment is more then a cosmetic service. Also having a professional salon facial, microdermabrasion or glycolic chemical peel, will really help to reduce thickened skin, acne prone skin and skin that is ageing. Having your skin reset will allow all those lovely skincare products penetrate deeper into the basal (lower) layers of the skin. It’s at this level the product needs to reach to perform at their optimum, where they can increase the collagen and elastin fibres and actually hydrate and plump the skin.

• If you'd like to discuss a course of treatment for your skin or book an appointment please call Jill on 064 6632966. I am delighted to welcome everyone back for some relaxation and essential maintenance.

Countdown to Leaving Cert 2021

Focus on pace, balance and self-care! This school year has been exceptionally challenging and the last couple of weeks have been particularly stressful for the Class of 2021. You have now made your decisions about opting for exams, Accredited Grades or in many cases, a combination of the two. You are very busy at the moment completing assignments and class tests to be used as part of the Accredited Grade assessment process. Emotions felt by Leaving Cert students at this stage of the year vary. Many of you are stressed, anxious, overwhelmed and exhausted while others are excited about finishing up and moving on. Whatever you are feeling is normal and you are not alone. Make sure to reach out to those around you at home and in school to support you in the coming weeks. In the four weeks leading up to the exams focus on preparing, planning and prioritising.

FINAL HURDLE

Just like an athlete preparing for a marathon, in the final weeks you will need to adjust your schedule to make sure you are in the best position to face the final hurdle. Your routine is really important at this stage, as is striking a balance between revision and rest/relaxation. Continue to draw up a weekly plan and a daily priority list. At the end of each day tick off what you have achieved and plan for the next day.

STUDY SESSIONS

Study sessions work best in short bursts at this stage, just like a High Intensity Internal Training (HIIT) session. Do your best to switch off all distractions particularly the phone and social media so you can concentrate fully and to minimise the impact of media hype that comes with Leaving Cert exams. Keep revision sessions to 45 minutes and take quick breaks to get up and move around regularly. It may seem impossible but try hard to switch off to ensure that you can get proper rest.

Niamh Dwyer is a Guidance Counsellor in Scoil Phobail Sliabh Luachra, Rathmore, and Chairperson of the Kerry Branch of Guidance Counsellors. She is also a Career Consultant. For details see www.mycareerplan.ie or follow MyCareerPlan on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter.

RELAX

Don’t study too late and always allow time to do whatever relaxes you after study – take the dog for a walk (they won’t bother you with questions and generally lift spirits!), listen to music, try some meditation/mindfulness if it helps, do some exercise, watch Netflix for a short while. You know what works best for you.

DISCONNECT

While it is important to stay connected with friends it is a good idea to disconnect from social media at least half an hour before you go to bed. This will unplug you from the speculation and hype that intensifies coming up to and during the exams. You have shown remarkable resilience at a difficult time – that will stand to you in the coming weeks and far beyond the Leaving Certificate exam.

New campaign encourages families to re-start healthy habits Bad snacking habits which escalated during the pandemic are soon to be a thing of the past with the launch of a new campaign this week. New research from safefood in support of the START campaign has found that almost 50% of parents and guardians said children are eating more treats since the start of the pandemic and that they are finding it difficult to keep the amount of treats their children eat to a minimum. Research from 2019 has shown that prior to the pandemic foods like biscuits, crisps, chocolate and sweets were the second-most consumed food group by children and almost one quarter of all meals included food and drinks high in fat, salt and sugar (HFSS). Given the recent increase reported by parents, the latest phase of the START campaign from safefood, the HSE and Healthy Ireland recognises that it’s time to give treats a break and parents acknowledged this too. The campaign focuses on the critical moment when a child asks for a treat and supports parents in taking a stand in saying no in order to re-start their kids on the way to healthier habits. “This past year has not been easy for parents and has had a significant impact on what we eat and how active we are as families," Chief Specialist in Nutrition with safefood, Joana Da Silva, said. "We know that physical lockdowns, home-schooling and a lack of social contact have all contributed to this situation. But as measures are slowly eased, it brings the hope that parents we can restart those healthy habits at home. The START campaign is here to support par-

ents. It all starts with a plan, which will be different for every family; for those who might have treats every day, this might mean aiming for a treat-free day; or giving treats a break at one part of the day, for example after school. Once parents have set a goal, they’ll need to agree this with all the family. Everybody has to be in this together if it’s going to work.” Margaret O’Neill, National Nutrition Lead, HSE added that parents and guardians have said that they have been giving their children more treats, like crisps, chocolate and biscuits, than they usually would over the past year but they want to make changes. "The time is right to focus on giving treats a break and on restarting healthy snacking habits before the summer holidays.

Remember children need two to three healthy snacks a day for growth and development. Healthy snacks provide, energy, protein and other nutrients children need to grow. Start with small changes and have a plan about the changes that will work for your family and remember to tell family members about your plan! It will be a daily challenge for a while but once the break is made, it will get easier." The START campaign aims to support parents to achieve small daily wins in adopting a healthy diet and lifestyle for their child. Parents can find support and practical tools, including videos from the experts on how to take a break from treats, on the START campaign website www.makeastart.ie.

After signing a tenancy agreement without viewing the property, 19-year-old Madison Kohout from Oklahoma got a shock when she realised that all her neighbours were pensioners. A week after moving in she spotted a sign ‘Senior Citizens Apartments’ in the Arkansas retirement village and posted a video online. However, the nursing assistant says that she is loving her new neighbourhood. "When I get home it’s usually always super quiet because most of my neighbours are asleep by the time I get home. But one major perk is that I can play music whenever I want to, because some of them can’t hear. Everyone asks me how I’m doing." She pays $350 a month for a two-bedroom flat, and when questioned about how a teenager was allowed to move into a retirement village, Madison explained it is equal-opportunity housing that doesn’t discriminate on age, despite being designed for senior citizens.

Facebook upholds Trump ban Social media giant Facebook has upheld its decision to bar Donald Trump from its platforms but he has found a workaround as only he could. On Wednesday, Facebook’s oversight board decided to uphold its January decision by saying the account should not be reinstated. However, Trump, who had 32 million Facebook fans, has found

a way around the ban as posts on his website can be directly shared to Facebook and Twitter (where he had 88 million fans) allowing him to publish his message on both networks without actually having an active account. Trump shunned mainstream media to avoid them asking awkward questions and hold him accountable, as they should. He had free reign on social media

and was often the originator of fake news, the one thing he held against traditional media, via his own platforms. Facebook has said it will review Trump’s account again after six months but in the meantime his millions of followers can continue to share his messages - without the accountability required by print and broadcast media.

Grab your camera and get snapping With some of the most spectacular coastlines in the world, make sure you bring your camera as you explore the Irish coast this summer and capture its beauty. Clean Coasts’ 12th annual 'Love Your Coast' photography competition is now open for entries until 9am on August 30. There is a prize fund of €5,000 up for grabs across five categories: Coastal Heritage, Coastal Landscape, People & the Coast, Wildlife & the Coast and finally the new category, Creativity and the Coast. Every year this competition draws a large amount of interest from Ireland’s amateur photographers, coastal enthusiasts, and the conservation-minded. This year across all the categories judges

are also encouraging photographers to explore new methods and angles in capturing the coastal regions and wildlife and would discourage photographing of locations and species that have been heavily submitted in previous years. Working with communities on the ground, Clean Coasts’ mission is to help foster pride in our coastline, supporting Clean Coasts communities, groups, and volunteers to tackle issues affecting their local area. This competition provides an opportunity to view the coast and our waterways that the Clean Coasts programme works to protect from a completely different perspective and see the beauty captured therein. Visit Clean Coasts to find out more about the competition and how to enter.

Billion dollar separation One of the richest couples in the world - if not the richest - are set to divorce after 27 years of marriage. With a fortune of an eye watering $146bn - or €121.5bn according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index - it remains to be seen just how Bill and Melinda Gates will cope with the split. The Microsoft co-founder and his wife, who launched the world’s largest charitable foundation, have said however that they will continue to work together

at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The couple announced their split earlier this week and have stated that they will remain co-chairs and trustees of the foundation, a spokesperson for the organisation wrote in an emailed statement to Bloomberg. They're the second high profile 'world's richest couple' to split in recent times following the seperation of Amazon and Blue Origin founder Jeff Bezos and his wife MacKenzie Scott.

HEALTH & FITNESS Advice - By Tara Tangney Tara is available for advice and fitness consultations, on email info@activate.ie • www.activate.ie

The cost of making poor health choices Everything we do today affects us in some way, shape, or form in the future. I think we learned that when we discovered how bad smoking is for us, or when we discovered what carcinogens are, but what about our other choices? We choose to drink too much alcohol, eat too much sugar, and fill our trolleys with processed food. We also choose to sit at a desk all day, then sit in a car, and sit on our couch, and we avoid movement. What price will we pay for not exercising or for making poor food choices? Think about this for a second; we are animals who are made to move and feed off the land. Yet we still drink fizzy drinks, eat rubbish and participate in activities that cause harm to our bodies for enjoyment. The worst part is that we don’t ever stop to think about the future. One day these choices will catch up to us – saving money to buy the share bag of crisps because they are on sale (this is just one simple example) that will cost you in the long run. What will that cost be - your health. This is the cost of all our medical bills, immobility, and independence that could be a result of our current poor choices. In case you didn’t know a trip to the doctor is expensive and not having a good quality of life is depressing, to say the least. Who doesn’t want to be able to play with the grandkids, or great-grandkids, or be able to take care of themselves? The great news is that you can change this outcome! You have control over your current habits and research shows

by following a few guidelines you can lead a much healthier lifestyle - leading to a better quality of life. Here are the simple steps to being more healthy: •M aintain a healthy diet: This means eating as little processed foods as possible and focusing mostly on whole foods - think the perimeter of the grocery store. •M aintain consistent physical activity: This means working out at least three times per week and trying to attain a goal of 10,000 steps per day - at least 8,000 for those who feel that’s too much. •R educe sugar intake: According to research, men should not consume more than about 36g per day and women should limit it to around 25g per day. •N ot smoking •M oderate alcohol intake: This means limiting your intake to an average of one beverage per day! We don’t mean one of your pours of wine or vodka - we mean the actual serving size. The hard part is making sure you actually stick to these basic guidelines. Our society is full of bad influences from the people we hang around to the commercials we watch, so living a healthy lifestyle when we are full of influences and busy schedules can be difficult to do on your own. We recommend that you find an accountability buddy and ask them to help keep you on track. If you can’t find one we are here to help! It is our goal to empower you to be able to set the habits in place to do this on your own!

Post-COVID recruitment fair to help kick-start industry | By Michelle Crean It's full steam ahead for the third annual South Kerry Hotel Recruitment fair to help kick-start the critical tourism season in the region. While COVID has delayed the event, SKDP’s Enterprise Office Joanne Griffin said that they are now working to ensure the event can take place as soon as possible. While the start of the tourism season has been delayed due to COVID-19, the many hotels involved are actively recruiting staff with the hope of having a positive season. However, the event will not be held in its usual format due to restrictions on large gatherings, she explained. "We hope that our work developing an alternative will continue the success of the event for both the recruiters and job seekers,” Joanne said. The whole idea of the event is to intro-

duce those interested in taking up a career in the hotel industry with a large number of employers from the sector in an informal setting. It is organised through South Kerry Development Partnership’s SICAP programme and has proven hugely popular since its inception. The event is open to those who already have experience in the hotel sector as well as those who might be interested in a career change. “Its success is built on the fact that employers get to meet with a broad range of potential employees with a range of skills that they otherwise might not have the chance to interact with,” she said. "We anticipate that this will continue to be the case despite the changed format proposed this year." Participation in the event is through registration and jobseekers wishing to take part are asked to register now by contacting Joanne by email at jgriffin@skdp.net or 087 6152660.

retailers in Kerry who are in need of a digital uplift to avail of this funding," Minister Foley, welcoming the announcement, said. "This scheme will provide vital supports to shops and business owners who are keen to establish a digital foothold and a competitive online presence as we recover from the economic constraints of COVID-19.” The Scheme will be administered by Enterprise Ireland. | By Sean Moriarty Killarney-based technicians working for ESB Networks staged a 48 hour strike at the company’s depot at Tiernaboul Industrial Estate earlier this week. Staff, who are members of the Independent Workers’ Union (IWU), are unhappy with the outsourcing of work and a lack of consultation on these works. ESB staff nationwide have been ‘working to rule’ since the middle of April but the situation escalated this week with the staging of a 48-hour stoppage in the Killarney Depot. IWU members in Tralee, Cahersiveen and Kanturk also joined various picket lines across the county. “They won’t talk to us about outsourcing our work,” local union organiser Mossy Kerins told the Killarney Advertiser. “In the past we would have been previously consulted [about outsourcing work] but the ESB seem to want to ignore us this time.” The Independent Workers’ Union is not recognised by ESB Networks but the utility company does recognise other

trade unions. It is understood that other workers based at the Killarney Depot, but members of other unions, are not crossing the picket line. However, most of their work is either in remote rural areas or staff are working from home and, as a result, services are largely unaffected. As part of their working to rule stance, the technicians are not providing cover for out of hours emergency repairs or storm damage work. “ESB Networks remains concerned that the IWU has not co-operated with Emergency Cover since the action began on April 19. This is unprecedented in ESB’s experience. ESB Networks once again acknowledges the strong support provided by our staff who are members of the affiliated trade unions,” an ESB Networks spokesperson said.

Kilgarvan Motor Museum ready to welcome visitors The Kilgarvan Motor Museum will reopen from Monday (May 10) but by appointment only. Kerry’s only dedicated transport museum has been closed since October 1 when Level 5 restrictions came in to force in Ireland. The museum, run by the Mitchell family, welcomed visitors for three months last year as the pandemic-related restrictions only allowed opening between August 1 and the start of October. However, that will change on Monday, the day museums and other tourists at-

tractions across the county are allowed reopen for the first time this year. “We will take it slowly,” Trevor Mitchell told the Killarney Advertiser. “We depend on hotels and guesthouses. When it is a rainy day people look for something to do indoors. There has been no classic car runs either and we get a lot of passing trade that way. So, for the month of May, anyway, we will open by appointment only and see how it goes from there.” Potential visitors can contact Kilgarvan Motor Museum on 064 668 5346 to arrange an appointment.

ROAD RUN: Members of Killarney and District Motor Club organised a road run on Sunday. Photo: Eamonn Keogh

Club marks Rally of the Lakes in honour of Johnny Hickey

A few weeks ago Killarney and District Motor Club stalwart Johnny Hickey started organising a classic car run to mark what should have been the final day of this year’s Rally of the Lakes.

His clubmates came together at the weekend to finish the job he started by organising a road run over some of the county’s favourite rally roads on Sunday. The run was also a mark of respect and a way of honouring Johnny who passed

away suddenly last week. A large group of rally organisers and competitors – observing social distancing at all times – met in the car park of rally headquarters The Gleneagle Hotel on Sunday afternoon.

“The club wanted to carry out his wishes,” said fellow KDMC member Martin Farrell. “Three weeks ago Johnny started to organise an event like this to mark the rally weekend and we finished it for him.” After a quick photoshoot the drivers headed off towards Moll’s Gap, Ballaghbeama Gap and Caragh Lake for a leisurely run over a route that is often part of the Sunday run of the famous rally. The event was attended by Johnny’s father Charlie and uncle John – two wellknown local rally drivers.

Are markets about to crash?

It was another flat week for markets despite record-breaking earnings and continued signals of economic growth. Despite a more subdued end to the month, April was the fifth positive month out of the past six for the S&P 500, jumping more than 5%.

EQUITIES:

Earning reports from Big Tech last week have shown emphatically how the dominance of the biggest platform companies has intensified. Both Apple and Amazon reported top-line revenue of over $100 billion for the quarter, while Facebook, Microsoft and Google all reported a significant increase in earnings. By contrast, more niche players in the same space have struggled to compete: Pinterest and Twitter were both down 15% last week following lower than expected revenue guidance. This gulf in earnings has highlighted the disparity in market power between the most significant players and their increasingly insignificant competitors. This sets the stage nicely for the regulatory battles ahead for Big Tech. One of these pivotal regulatory battles kicked off on Monday as Epic Games, the designer of the hugely popular game Fortnite, attempts to prove that the way Apple runs its App Store is discriminatory

and anti-competitive.

CRYPTO

It appears that Bitcoin’s dominance over the digital asset sector is fading. It now accounts for less than 50% of the total crypto market of $2.3 trillion. Ether, the cryptocurrency used on the better-known Ethereum platform, is now taking the spotlight as it adds to recent gains to trade as high as $3,200, a 15-fold increase from a year ago. Bitcoin is up about 100% in 2021, and Ethereum is up over 330%. For comparative purposes, the S&P 500 is up a ‘measly’ 11.7%.

MARKET OUTLOOK

In a week of record-breaking earnings and economic recovery, markets remained relatively unchanged overall, telling us that much of the good news is already priced in. It is now glaringly obvious that despite the ever-improving backdrop, each tick higher becomes harder and harder to justify given the current valuation levels. I don’t claim to know the exact turning point for markets, nor do I know of anyone who can time these inflection points

consistently. For one, irrationality and speculation can persist for far longer than you might expect. What I will say is, from a purely behavioural standpoint, while positive news is the base case scenario, this positive outlook is now simply functioning to maintain current levels. I believe that market participants will be far more sensitive to negative news going forward, fuelling the fragility and volatility in the most exposed sectors of the market. This is not a call to short the market, as timing these reversals can be a humbling endeavour. What I would urge is caution and patience. My overarching view: I believe the economic recovery will persist, and some upside remains, fuelled by higher earnings and low-interest rates. With that said, pullbacks and market rotations are likely, with much of the opportunities lying at the sector level. Rotating out of the more exposed names from a valuation standpoint and into the likes of financials will help take some risk off the table while still offering a benefit to the upside. A move into value-based names should also offset some risk. Value has experienced a consolidation in relative strength with the moderation in interest rates, a trend that is likely to continue.

Emerging Markets or All world Ex-U.S. expose will also provide some diversification away from the record valuation levels of the current US market. In short, the outstanding Q1 earnings are functioning to balance out the short-term overbought conditions, and the base case scenario is for earnings and economic growth to remain strong for the remainder of the year. With that said, any deviation away from this base case scenario will create a painful environment for those holding the most speculative names, so make sure to pivot accordingly while you still can.

TIE DAY: The children of Faha NS recently raised €940 for Kerry Mental Health by participating in 'Tie Day Friday'. Everyone wore colourful ties to school and donated. Pictured were: Jerry Fitzgerald (Principal) and John Drummey of Kerry Mental Health Association with some of the pupils.

More than €10k raised from 'Tie Day Friday' The generous nature of Kerry people everywhere was evident once again through the large volume of donations in support of Kerry Mental Health Association’s recent #TieDayFriday fundraiser. Men, women, children - even cats and dogs - wore ties at home, school, work and online and shared their pictures across social media and made donations to Kerry Mental Health Association on April 23. The money is still coming in via cheque, cash and online at www.KerryMentalHealth.ie/Donate with more than €10,000 received to date. All proceeds raised will go towards supporting the befriending and other mental health promotional activities undertaken by Kerry Mental Health Association. “We are most grateful to the many people – schools, businesses, individuals at home – who took part in #TieDayFriday," General Manager of Kerry Mental Health Association, John Drummey, said. "It was a colourful and fun event. We were particularly moved by the many messages of support and encouragement that we received and we thank everyone for their generosity and kindness. This is a time of hope as we begin to emerge from the latest lockdown. The volunteers in the nine branches which make up Kerry

CHEQUE: St Brigid's Presentation raised €1,075 during the 'Tie Day Friday' fundraiser in aid of Kerry Mental Health. Pictured: Sheree Murphy presenting the cheque to John Drummey of the Kerry Mental Health Association on behalf of all the students and staff.

Mental Health Association are looking forward to getting back to fully pursuing the befriending and support activities which enrich the lives of neighbours and friends in our communities who are living with mental health challenges.” Overall, there was great support for #TieDayFriday from schools and businesses across Kerry, as well as ex-pats in Dublin, New York, and London. Some of the more high-profile Kerry people who helped to promote #TieDayFriday were twice Champion Jockey Oisin Murphy and fashion experts Paul Galvin, Don O’Neill, and Orla Diffily.

All systems go for local academies as underage sport finally returns There were smiles aplenty around the playing fields of Killarney and East Kerry last Saturday morning as juvenile players made their long-awaited return following the latest COVID-19 lockdown. Club officials were happy to report high numbers across the board as our future sports stars got their first run-out of 2021, with children evidently buzzing to be granted permission to resume activity. All amateur sport had been suspended in line with government guidelines since the turn of the year. Elite sports, such as intercounty Gaelic games, have been back training collectively since mid-April and, after the underage teams were given the go-ahead last week, all that remains now is nonelite adult athletes. That particular cohort will be back in the swing of things from next week on. Training for adults and juveniles will

be limited to pods of 15 outdoors for the time-being with a return to competitive matches expected in June. Parents are being asked to update their children’s health status at returntoplay. gaa.ie before each session. At intercounty level, the Kerry hurlers get their National League campaign underway in Tralee this Sunday with a match against Down. The footballers are out the following Saturday against Galway, with that fixture also taking place in Austin Stack Park. The Kerry camogie team have their first outing next weekend as they face Galway in Lixnaw, while the Kerry ladies footballers will get their season up and running against Meath on May 23. It’s great to have sport back in the picture and as these pictures from local clubs clearly show, the resumption of juvenile activity hasn’t come a moment too soon!

Club officials were happy to report high numbers across the board.

The forgotten GAA star Eamonn Fitzgerald tells the unusual tale of Paul Russell, the Killarney man who won six All-Irelands and played for eight clubs in eight different counties Dick Fitzgerald, Johnny Culloty and Colm Cooper were outstanding Kerry football stars, all winning five All-Ireland medals wearing the green and gold, but there was another Killarney man who went one better. A man about whom little enough is known. His achievements deserve recognition. Paul Russell (1906-1965) was born in Mangerton View on July 2, 1906, the second youngster of a family of six (four girls and two boys). His only brother joined the Franciscan Order. His near neighbour was Hugh O’Flaherty, who was eight years older than him. I don’t know if Hugh ever played football. I must ask his sister Pearl (Dineen) in Cahersiveen to clarify that, but he was an amateur golf champion and that was no surprise. His father Jim, whom I knew, was a steward in Killarney Golf & Fishing Club. Hugh became famous in another sphere, saving the lives of 6,500 Allies in Rome during World War II.

KICKING THE BALL

Now for some meat to flesh out Russell’s achievements. Most of our readers will

DISAGREEMENT: Dr Eamonn O'Sullivan and Paul Russell were Dr Crokes clubmates, but they had differing opinions when it came to the GAA's infamous 'Ban'.

not remember him, but quite a few knew Kathy, one of his sisters. Niall Keogh, the former Crokes player, interviewed her for ‘Dr Crokes Gaelic Century 1886-1986’. She said Paul’s first love was football and not “the books” because he spent endless hours kicking the ball around Mangerton View. There he perfected the drop-kick, a huge feature of football at that time, but

now effectively gone out of the modern game as retaining possession at all times is the mantra. The street had few cars then and Fitzgerald Stadium wasn’t built. Juvenile football wasn’t organised at that time, but the Street Leagues were hugely popular. First off let’s look at Paul Russell’s stats: 6 x All-Ireland Senior Football medals (1924, 1926, 1929, 1930, 1931, 1932), 3 x Railway Cups, 1 x Dublin Senior Football Championship. He was a student in St Brendan’s College, Killarney and the 17-year-old had to get special permission to play in the 1923 final v Dublin, his first All-Ireland. He had never played for any Kerry team before this and hadn’t even got a trial. He had been playing for College Street in the Killarney Town Leagues and was a new lad on the Crokes senior team, but that was all. It was enough for Dick Fitzgerald, the organiser (no such person as a manager that time) who knew that this fellow would make it. He convinced his fellow Kerry selectors to gamble on this strapping young Killarney man and put him in directly at wing back for the 1923 final. That was of a Tuesday. The first he heard of his Kerry selection was on his way to

school in the Sem on the following morning (Wednesday). Frank O’Shea (the local blacksmith obviously being Twitter before its time) delivered the hot news.

CELEBRATION

The Sem boss at the time was Canon John Breen and he was overjoyed, declaring that the college would celebrate this distinction with a holiday to mark Paul’s amazing achievement. He didn’t bother contacting the Department of Education to pass it by them. He ruled and no one objected. On Saturday Dick Fitzgerald took Russell up to the train and introduced him to his teammates. Russell said he was very nervous as they booked into Barry’s Hotel. In the dressing room Jack Prendergast (‘Pendy the Jersey Man’) was a key figure. God knows Kerry have had some great bagmen down through the years, all great characters. I think fondly of the great Gaffney (Duggan) who made sure that the perk would stay in Tralee when he got too old to lift the bag of jerseys. He coached Leo (Griffin) to take over from him many years later. The power struggle switched to Killarney and up popped

from Mangerton View Niall Botty O’Callaghan to give out those precious geansaís. Who has that job now? Prendy threw Russell the number five geansaí and Paul didn’t leave the Kerry side down with a fine display. They were just edged out by Dublin, 1-5 to 1-3. No medal at the first attempt. Paul Russell brought something new to the game, perfecting the drop-kick. In the words of Michael O’Hehir, “he sends a long relieving clearance down the field turning defence into attack”. At that time players were never allowed to stray out of their zones of play. A half back was not allowed to come up beyond midfield, but that did not deter Russell, who was a man before his time, an attacking half-back soloing up the field into enemy territory. That was strange in that era, as Dr Eamonn masterminded Kerry’s All-Ireland victories by promoting own zone play and he drew out that plan for the players on a blackboard. That was the secret to success in 1955, over the hitherto dominant Dublin machine. Russell went home on the train after the match and was up early for school the following morning. He didn’t have his Greek homework done for obvious reasons, and the heroics of the previous day in Croke Park were not an acceptable excuse. No mercy, no cop-on. Sín amach do lámh and the priest/teacher gave him the customary six ruts. Ouch. No bother for Russell to take it, as it hardened him for a glorious future to win six All-Irelands. Champions Dublin hoped to retain their title, but not this time. Hard to believe it but the score in the 1924 All-Ireland final was four points to three. Paul Russell won the first of his medals and he was still only 26 years old when he earned his sixth within eight years. He played on the first Kerry team to win four-in-a-row (1929-1932). He won three Railway Cup medals, two with Munster and he also won one with Leinster. In fact, he was picked to play for both Munster and Leinster in the same year in the same competition and the GAA had to step in to decree that he must play with Leinster, which he did. Strange to relate that he played for Dublin in 1927, but reverted to Kerry for the four-in-a-row.

8 CLUBS, 8 COUNTIES

He is the only player I know of who played with eight different GAA clubs and in eight different counties. What’s more he was legal in all cases. Even Dan Dwyer would be stumped by that remarkable feat. Russell was a member of the Garda Síochána, so he was stationed all over the country. His winning clubs and their respective counties were Dr Crokes (Kerry), Garda (Dublin), Dungarvan (Waterford), Kilconnell (Galway), Killevin (Monaghan),

59

no All-Ireland only for Paul Russell; being around the team had a huge effect on us. He knew about winning All-Irelands and letting him train the team was very important. He brought something new to the county”. When he went to Oldcastle as a Garda sergeant he was the catalyst for success. Meath nearly did it in 1939 and had to wait until 1949 to win their first All-Ireland with Paul Russell still their guiding force. To this day they talk about the Kerryman who showed them how to win All-Irelands.

Smithboro (Cavan), Oldcastle (Meath), and Rockfordsfordbridge (Wexford). Some strange names in that eight. I wonder how many of these clubs still exist? Russell was also a fine sprinter, taking on the best in the All-Ireland athletics, often held in the Garda Sportsground. He was just 19 years old when he became the first secretary of the newly formed East Kerry Board as we know it today. Dick Fitzgerald was the organiser and its first Chairman in 1925.

THE TWO PAULS

He ended his intercounty care in style in ‘32. There were just four minutes left in the semi-final game and Dublin were leading by a goal. Paul Russell gained possession from a Paddy Whitty free and sent one of his trademark drop-kicks into the Dublin goal. The ball hit the ground in the middle of the square and careered off the mud into the net. Half-back Russell was credited with the goal. Kerry added a point in time added on for a 1-3 to 1-1 victory and so to a win over Mayo in the final 2-7 to 2-4. Six All-Ireland medals and Paul Russell was still just 26 years old.

In 1926 they beat Kildare after a replay 1-4 to 0-4. In 1929 Kerry just edged out Kildare 1-8 to 1-5 and seal the first of the four-in–a-row for Kerry and for Paul Russell. In 1930 they had a big win over Monaghan 3-11 to 0-2. Kildare were back in 1931, but Paul Russell stemmed the tide once more to keep the winning Kerry momentum going, 1-11 to 0-8. He won his sixth medal in 1932 when they beat Mayo 2-7 to 2-4.

Paul Russell continued to play club football all over the country and again he made his mark. When he was stationed in Dublin, his Garda boss was Eoin Duffy, who became the second Commissioner of the Garda Síochána, the police force of the new Irish Free State,. Later Duffy led The Blueshirts. Duffy saw the opportunity to build an All-Ireland team of gardaí and got Russell to play for the Garda club, and switch his allegiance to play for Dublin. Russell was very reluctant to turn his back on Kerry, but in those days the Commissioner gave you no choice if you wanted promotion. He thought very seriously about leaving the gardaí, but Dr Éamonn advised him to stick it out. He also won a Dublin County Championship with Garda. Russell was the hero of club teams he played with when he was stationed in 8 different counties. He switched to hurling in 1938 and trained the Wexford hurlers to win that All-Ireland. He also played for the football team. He was revered in Meath and as Paddy O’Brien, that great Meath full back, was quoted so often: “We would have won

In 1925, Kerry beat Cavan 1-7 to 2-3 in the All-Ireland semi-final played in Tralee, but were subsequently disqualified for using an illegal player. Russell had some great duels with Paul Doyle, the prolific Kildare half-forward in that age of the great Kerry v Kildare rivalry, 1926-1931. Kerry’s four-in-a-row depended on Russell keeping Doyle, Kildare’s most dangerous forward, to a minimum of points. It went into folklore as the Battle of the Two Pauls. The late Paddy Kiely from Woodlawn wrote these lines: And wherever Doyle (Kildare) did roam, His star was always clouded, By the boy (Russell) from Beauty’s Home.

DUFFY

He was assistant trainer to Dr Éamonn in 1953 when Kerry won 0-13 to 1-6 v Armagh. Many contend that Kerry should have won in 1950 and in 1951. Strangely enough although he was great friends with Dr Eamonn, the two fellow Croke club members took opposite sides in the public debate on the Ban, which came before GAA Congress in 1962. Since they were well known public figures in the GAA they made headlines in The Kerryman. That was prior to the founding of the Killarney Advertiser. Such was his high profile that when he finished playing he became a Gaelic games writer for his weekly column in the Sunday Review and also wrote for The Kerryman newspaper. He was a controversial writer and won no favours with the top brass in the GAA while arguing his viewpoint that Rule 27 (the controversial ban) should be abolished. He stood out on a limb in that controversy aided by Tom Woulfe, a fellow Kerryman, whom I knew in Dublin. In 1965, although he was gravely ill, he asked to be taken to the National League final to see his beloved Kerry play Galway. He died shortly afterwards and was buried in Deansgrange Cemetery in Dublin on June 9, not far away from the grave of Éamonn Mac Gearailt, a former Kerry All-Ireland winning teammate of his in 1931. The latter went on to represent Ireland in the 1932 Olympics in Los Angeles, just edged out of a bronze medal by one inch. Gold medallist Dr Pat O’Callaghan, who worked in St Finan’s Hospital, said that the Castlecove man would surely have won gold only for his injured ankle. A cortisone injection brought him so close. Éamonn was the forgotten Olympian until the late Weeshie Fogarty got the Kerrymen’s Association in Dublin to erect a monument to a great Kerry and Irish Paul Russell’s achievements are well known throughout Ireland, but I often wonder have we forgotten about Paul Russell, the Mangerton View garsún, the high achieving football star and sports writer?

Alan McLoughlin RIP Irish soccer hero fondly remembered in Killarney

LEGEND: Alan McLoughlin played 42 times for Ireland between 1990 and 1999. Pic: Brendan Moran/Sportsfile.

1967-2021

In August of 1992, Ireland international Alan McLoughlin spent a week in Killarney as part of the first ever FAI Summer Soccer Camps, which were organised in this town in conjunction with Killarney Athletic. Over the course of his stay, the Portsmouth player coached a group of local youngsters at the old Áras Phádraig pitch on Lewis Road. Long-serving Athletic chairman Mikey O’Sullivan liaised with McLoughlin throughout his visit and so impressed was he with the Mancunian’s work on the training pitch, he suggested that a career in coaching lay ahead for the then-25-year-old. McLoughlin, who was a bit-part player for Jack Charlton’s side at the time, quipped that he still had something to offer as a player. Little did he or O’Sullivan know just how significant a contribution to Irish football he would later make. Fast forward to November of 1993 and a tense and fractious night at Windsor Park in Belfast. Ireland needed a result against Northern Ireland to secure a place at the 1994 World Cup but with time ebbing away, they trailed by a goal to nil. Charlton turned to McLoughlin to come in and make an impact, and what an impact he made. The attacking midfielder controlled Denis Irwin’s half-cleared free kick on his chest before arrowing a beautiful half-volley to the corner of the net, and Ireland were heading for America. It wasn’t McLoughlin’s only contribution to the Irish team – he was selected for two World Cups and was Ireland’s Player of the Year in 1996 – but it was undoubtedly his most important. He continued playing for his country until 1999 and he would later fulfil O’Sullivan’s prophecy by taking on a coaching role with Portsmouth.

ILLNESS

McLoughlin was diagnosed with a kidney tumour in 2012. Although he had a successful operation at the time, he confirmed in March of this year that he was battling cancer again. He passed away on Tuesday at the age of 54. Tributes have poured in for the Irish soccer hero these past few days and speaking to the Killarney Advertiser, Mikey O’Sullivan said he has fond memories of McLoughlin’s time in Killarney. “I recall meeting Alan at the time as he was an assigned coach to our coaching clinic and he was a very likeable and genuine fellow. He and his wife Debbie,

along with their few-months-old baby Abby, stayed in the Gleneagle Hotel for the week. “When speaking with Alan he was very proud to be part of the Irish international team and valued his family ties with this country very much. (McLoughlin’s mother hailed from Knockaderry in County Limerick and his father came from Largan, between Headford and Tuam on the Galway/Mayo border.) “I am sure that I can express condolences to Debbie, Abby and Megan and the wider family at this sad time of their great loss from all of us in Killarney who met Alan through the love and support of soccer.” McLoughlin will always have a special place in the hearts of Irish soccer fans thanks to that wondergoal in Belfast in ’93 and in his autobiography he acknowledged how significant a moment that was for him personally. “I occasionally get out the video of that goal against Northern Ireland, watch my volley and watch the elation on my face. I think back to touching down at Dublin airport as the hero of the hour. I think back over my life and career. Serious illness brings with it the inevitable thought of standing at the pearly gates, and accounting for your life. I think back on the characters I've come across, the family members that I have loved and cherished, the joy and pain, I think back to Big Jack telling the cameras that, with the goal, I had justified my existence. “And I reflect with a wry smile that, yes, when all is said and done, I had done exactly that.”

ONE MILLION STEPS in memory of Maureen Kelliher. We have set up a fundraiser in memory of our mother, Maureen Kelliher (nee O'Leary). As a lot of you might know, Maureen passed away in 2018 at the age of 47. This year we would have been celebrating her 50th birthday on May 28. Maureen was diagnosed with MS (Multiple Sclerosis) in 2016. All those who were with her through that tough journey knew of the strength and determination she had shown while living with such a life altering condition, which heavily affected her mobility and stamina. Because of the current COVID situation, we are unable to celebrate her memory on this milestone birthday with her close family and friends. We have decided instead to take on a challenge to reach a goal of one million steps between the four of us from May 1-28. We chose to do this because prior to her illness, she loved being active and was on her feet every day whether it was in Glenflesk, Killarney Celtic, or Kenmare. During this challenge, we will provide regular updates on our social media accounts (Facebook, Instagram, etc.). The money raised will be donated to MS Ireland, a charity that we hold close to our hearts. After Maureen's diagnosis, they provided her with such a high standard of care, gave her lots of information and support, and we could not think of a better way to honour our mother. We appreciate any donation, big or small, as a way of celebrating her birthday and raising money for a good cause. Thank you - Roy, Aideen, Susan, and Marc.
