Rent Crisis:
Could Zoned Properties Be The Answer?
Words: Adam Moynihan

New Apartments To Meet “Very, Very Small Portion” Of Town’s Housing Needs Words: Adam Moynihan
V
A derelict building which has been described as an “eyesore” by locals is to be demolished and replaced with six modern apartment units, it has been confirmed. The site, which is located just inside the entrance to Pinewood estate, has been vacant for a number of years and councillors voted unanimously in favour of proceeding with the development at a meeting of Killarney Municipal District this week. Cllr John Joe Culloty The site will consist of four 1-bed/2-person units and two 2-bed/4-person units ranging from 49 to 66 square metres. Seven regular parking spaces and one disabled space will be provided. Works are to commence in March 2019. “Having regard to the nature, scale and location of the proposed development, on a derelict site within an established residential development and walking distance to existing services, it is considered that the provision of six residential apartments will meet a portion of the housing requirement need in Killarney town,” Kerry County Council said in their report on the proposed Pinewood apartments. Cllr John Joe Culloty said it was a “very, very small portion” but it was help in the area we needed it most: 1-2 bed accommodation. In their report, Kerry County Council conceded that the housing situation in Killarney is now reaching “critical level”. KCC currently has over 536 qualified applicants on its social housing waiting list for one bedroom accommodation. There are an additional 454 applicants on the list waiting for two bedroom housing.
As highlighted in last week’s Killarney Advertiser, the town’s crippling rent crisis is hitting locals hard. It is virtually impossible to secure long-term rentals in the Killarney area. Just 17 homes are currently listed on leading property website Daft.ie, and many of those are not within walking distance of the town centre. By contrast, there are over 300 Killarney properties listed on short-term rental site Airbnb. The figures are stark and the issue isn’t just affecting would-be residents, it’s also having a major impact on local businesses and their ability to attract suitable employees to the town. Walking through Killarney, it’s striking to see how many vacant and derelict properties there are. Some of these buildings have been unused for so long it’s hard to remember when they were last utilised. In the case of a few of them, I don’t recall ever seeing them used for anything in my lifetime. With the town crying out for more apartments, particularly one and two-bed apartments close to the centre, how are so many of these buildings lying idol? It seems as though certain properties have fallen into disrepair and the owners must feel as though it’s simply not worth the hassle to do them up, or it’s not worth enough to them financially to sell up. Is there anything the authorities can do address this issue, and perhaps help solve the housing crisis in the process? One idea that has been suggested is to zone off Killarney town and put a levy on owners if a property isn’t being used properly. When you travel to other major tourist destinations, you’ll notice that many of them are pretty structured. In one area you’ll find bars and restaurants, in another you’ll find retail, in another you’ll find accommodation. If Killarney was similarly divided up, not only would it be more convenient for locals and visitors, you could also incentivise entrepreneurs to open certain types of businesses (or accommodation) in certain areas. And if someone is leaving their property vacant, there is a penalty or incentive to reduce the number of abandoned properties in the town. This would act as a deterrent to anyone thinking of simply abandoning their building in an important part of the town. After all, this is our town and we have to give it every opportunity to perform to its potential.

Mayor Urged To Act On Killarney Advertiser’s Mayor of Killarney John Sheahan has been urged by fellow councillors to engage with the relevant authorities as the Killarney Advertiser’s campaign to see the McShains suitably honoured continues to gather pace. The idea to recognise the generous American couple, who came to own a large part of Killarney National Park before returning it to the State for virtually nothing, was first floated in these pages by our resident historian Damien Switzer earlier this summer. Since then, a wave of support has swept across Killarney with many of our readers left wondering why such measures haven’t already been taken in the years since John and Mary died. Cllr Maura Healy-Rae joined the Killarney Advertiser’s McShain Campaign two weeks ago and she broached the topic at the latest Killarney Municipal District Meeting. “We’re all well aware of the contribution the McShain family have made to the success of Killarney town as a whole and the tourist destination that it is,” she said. “I’m asking the members for their support on this. There are a variety of things that could be done. I’m not saying what is the best way to do it – it could be a bust, a monument, or renaming the park… But I would ask Kerry County Council to engage with the relevant agencies so that something meaningful, respectful and appropriate can be done.” Former mayor Niall Kelleher pointed out that during his tenure he oversaw efforts to have John McShain posthumously inducted into the Order of Innisfallen, but the
plans never materialised as Sr Pauline McShain, John and Mary’s daughter, was unable to travel back to Ireland due to ill health. He was still hopeful that a relative, possibly a first cousin of Sr Pauline’s, would be able to accept the Order of Innisfallen in the McShain’s honour. While Cllr Kelleher said he hoped that those plans would eventually come to pass, he clarified that he is also in favour of other ways of honouring John McShain. He then called on the new mayor, as first citizen of Killarney, to take the lead on the issue. Mayor Sheahan agreed, saying: “I think we’re all in the same mind about this. The McShains have done us a great service; you couldn’t put a price on it. It’s the least we can do.” Cllr Michael Gleeson suggested the idea of inviting submissions from the public to determine what might be an appropriate method of paying tribute to the philanthropic pair. Cllr Brendan Cronin, meanwhile, offered a dissenting voice on one of the suggestions, namely the idea of renaming Killarney House & Gardens ‘McShain Park’. “My understanding and my knowledge is that the sentiments of the McShain family were that (Killarney House & Gardens) would be available there for the public,’ he said. “If we’re talking about renaming it, I believe the grounds should be considered ‘The People’s Park’. That’s what they wanted.” Cllr Healy-Rae responded to that point, saying: “Yes, it was given to the people, but the people want to recognise them.”

Áras (Not Glebe) Favoured Site For Multi-Storey Car Park Words: Adam Moynihan The disused Áras Phádraig building on Lewis Road is the preferred site for any prospective multi-storey car park, with officials saying that any such development at the Glebe could cause more congestion in the town centre. Early last year, a consultancy agency was appointed to carry out a feasibility study to look at what future uses the property could be put to. Then, in December, the Killarney Advertiser produced an artist’s impression of a state-of-the-art Killarney Civic Plaza at the Áras and public reaction was overwhelmingly positive. The idea at the time was to tie the parking facilities in with other amenities, such as a theatre and a café. The issue was raised at a recent Killarney Municipal District meeting by Cllr Maura Healy-Rae, who was in favour of exploring the Glebe as an option. Cllr HealyRae stated her belief that traffic wouldn’t be an issue as people would be guaranteed a space in the multi-storey car park, which would mean they wouldn’t be driving around town looking for a space. Cllr Brendan Cronin, meanwhile, said he was “losing faith” that the project would ever be completed. “My gut instinct, if we read between the lines of senior management, is that there’s no willingness to proceed,” he said. “It’s kind of obvious to everyone now that it’s being kicked down the road.”

Town Engineer: No Short-Term Solution To Traffic Crisis Words: Adam Moynihan
Killarney’s Town Engineer, John Ahern, has stated in no uncertain terms that there is no short-term solution to the town’s crippling traffic problem. The situation at Port Road and Mission Road has been particularly dire but Mr Ahern said the only way of solving that issue was by building an outer link road onto the Muckross Road. “Until that is delivered you’re always going to have congestion,” he said. “Anything we do in town in just chipping away at the edges.” During the recession, the government shelved plans for a new Killarney bypass for at least 10-12 years, which means locals and visitors could be set for another decade or more of traffic issues. Killarney’s heavy traffic has been a major concern for many years but the situation this summer was particularly dire with many locals claiming that it was the worst the town has ever seen.
The TEIR 1 report indicated that tourist numbers are expected to increase 30% by 2025, which means the situation is likely to get far worse before it gets better. Mr Ahern, who was speaking at a Killarney Municipal District meeting on Wednesday, also said that the large congregation of schools in the New Road area of town was a significant contributing factor. “The community is growing so there’s an increased number of pupils going to these schools,” he said. “The vast majority of them are travelling by car and they’re all hitting at the one peak time. You’re go-

ing to get congestion there and there’s no easy or obvious answer to that, unless you bring in some sort of a bus system. I do believe that we should sit down with the principals of the schools so that we can begin the process of consultation.” Apparently children aren’t walking to school because their bags are too heavy, Mr Ahern added. Meanwhile, with regards to the Killarney Traffic Management Plan which was released in 2016, it was revealed that just four of the 33 recommended measures outlined in the report have been officially completed. 17 of the 33 measures were categorised as short-term
two years ago but many of these projects remain unfinished. “A lot of the short-term things should be done,” Cllr Niall Kelleher said. “The link roads need to be completed and we should ensure that the objectives in this plan are brought to fruition and completed as soon as possible. I believe we could be making better progress.” Town Manager Angela McAllen stressed that there’s a lot of work done but “a lot more needs to be done”. “We have to take a realistic approach to it,” she said. “We have the deputation for the very important link road, works are progressing in relation to the Haha, works are progressing in relation to Bohreen-na-Goun (next to Dunnes Stores)… Where you have purchases of land involved, it does involve a medium to long-term view. While we all want the solutions now, the reality is that we can’t have all the solutions now.”

No Mission Road Pedestrian Crossing “Like Locking The Doors To The National Gallery” Words: Adam Moynihan A Killarney councillor has once again called for a pedestrian crossing to be installed on Mission Road near the entrance to Killarney House & Gardens, saying visitors were being deterred from entering the park as crossing the road was too dangerous. Echoing concerns that were highlighted by the Killarney Advertiser as far back as last year, Cllr Michael Gleeson said he had seen groups of people standing at the Beech Road side waiting to cross, and that the current situation was limiting access to Killarney House & Gardens. “It’s akin to locking the doors to the National Gallery in Dublin,” Cllr Gleeson said. It wasn’t the first time he has brought up the issue, he added. Kerry County Council has confirmed that a pedestrian count was carried
out in June and the numbers were sufficient to justify a pedestrian crossing. “KCC will consult with the TII to seek approval to proceed with the design of a pedestrian crossing at this location,” they said. As noted in these pages on numerous occasions, the lack of a suitable crossing on Mission Road is a serious safety concern so we are pleased to hear that steps are being made to rectify the situation.
Actor Barry Keoghan Banned From Driving For Two Years Actor Barry Keoghan has been handed a two-year driving ban after being convicted at Killarney District Court of driving without insurance. The Dublin-born actor was stopped by gardaí in Fossa last November and was asked for his driving licence and certificate of insurance. Keoghan told the garda that he did not have insurance and agreed to produce documents at Killarney Garda Station within ten days. He failed to do so, however, and was subsequently charged. The Dunkirk star was not present at court in Killarney and he did not have any legal representation present. Judge David Waters fined Keoghan €250 and banned him from driving for two years. Keoghan (25) shot to fame after his role in acclaimed Irish TV drama Love/ Hate. He has since featured in a number of major movies, such as The Next
Big Thing, The Killing of a Sacred Deer and American Animals. The Dubliner has been known to spend a lot of time in Killarney as his girlfriend is from the area.

Top Musician Visits The Chatroom
Words: Adam Moynihan The town of Killarney was in a state of mourning this past week following the untimely passing of one of the town’s greatest singers and showmen, Dermot Flynn. Dermot, who was originally from Currow and lived in Arshanavooley, started out in music with The Radiant Showband alongside his brother Ned, and he was a much-loved star on the local and national scene for decades. In 1970, Dermot produced the popular record Memories of Killarney. Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser, radio personality and country music legend Dermot Moriarty described the late Dermot Flynn as “one of the best singers ever in the county”. “Joe Dolan had so much time for Dermot,” he said. “He used to sing Joe’s songs and he did them well. They became great buddies. It was many the night I shared their company in the Green Room at the Gleneagle, with Dermot’s brother Ned there as well. Happy times. Big times.” Mr Flynn holds the notable distinction of being the first ever person to perform at the INEC. Maurice O’Donoghue, proprietor of the Gleneagle Hotel, intentionally booked Dermot as a support act to Charley Pride so that a local man would take to the big stage first. Dermot is survived by his wife Kathleen, daughters Ann and Marie, sons Gerard, Alan and Kenneth, son-in-law, daughters-in-law, grandchildren, brother Ned, sister Mary-Bridget, extended family and a great many friends.
Legendary musician Pádraig Buckley of Killarney School of Music popped into The Chatroom this week. Pádraig talked to Killarney Advertiser’s Kieran Healy about how long Killarney School of Music has been in operation and he told us about the school’s new Stageworks program, which is not only open to the school’s students but also to non-students. Stageworks aims to get kids ready for real world performances and give them real world gigging experience by organising one show per month. Columnist Anne Lucey gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry and beyond
Kerry Airport Is A Triumph Of Spirit Over Reason
Killarney’s Tom Randles and the Tralee Chamber Alliance have tackled the Irish Times business position last weekend that it is time for Kerry Airport to “fly solo”. Propped up with Government grants, the “village” airport stands as “peculiar example of the Republic’s sub-standard ability to plan good transport solutions for its citizens,” is the Irish Times’ view. The country is paying to subvent an airport for a village of 84 and a passenger load of a quarter of the 1.2 million that makes any airport near viable, the Irish Times Cantillon column stated. As Kerry Airport approaches its 50th anniversary, it is time to let it go on a wing or a prayer as it is “a drain on finances,” is the consensus of the column, a column inspired by the French-Irish man regarded as the father of economic writing, Richard Cantillon (born in Kerry by the way). Dublin is being held up as an example of a busy airport. But there is no mention of the fact that Dublin Airport has among the worst records in Europe this summer in terms of flight delays. Dublin is overloaded and as this column has argued before, the Dublin load should be spread around, not least to Cork where buses depart the city on the hour for Dublin Airport. There is a lobby now for a second and maybe a third runway for Dublin! Kerry Airport is, of course, a triumph of spirit over reason: most achievements in the human sphere are. (It is necessary increasingly to say “human sphere” because the species has increasingly to compete with dogs/animals on the one side, and robots on the other.) But it is particularly dispiriting to see the Kerry Airport project attacked by the Dublin establishment, of which the Irish Times is the respected voice. Certainly, faced with “economic reason” (is there any other kind these days?) Kerry does not “need” an airport. It has already a heavily subsidised rail and bus link, this is true. Generations of TDs and ministers, as I have pointed out before, have failed us spectacularly in Kerry with regard
to road links. It is belittling, and surely must be embarrassing for anyone involved in national politics, to see how long it is taking to get two basic bypasses for Kerry in Adare and Macroom when what is needed are motorway links to Tralee and Killarney. When you think about it, there are more rural than city TDs in the Dáil, yet they have failed again and again to cross party lines and come together and come up with proper infrastructure for south and west Munster. In their failure they have allowed Dublin to eat up the rest of the country. This is the real failure of the Dáil: the failure of the rural TDs to adopt a common strategy so the
It is dispiriting to see the Kerry Airport project attacked by the Dublin establishment rest of the country can prosper. The truth is that the country properly planned “needs” only one airport and that would be in Athlone smack in the centre with high speed rail and road links. That is not going to happen. But what is entirely glossed over by everyone are the real reasons that inspired Kerry Airport and I turn to the introduction by airport chairman Denis Cregan to Donal Hickey’s 2009 book Kerry in the Jet Age, where the
founders are rightly called “visionaries”. “One of the many motivating factors for the building of the airport was the need to create access to Kerry for many people who emigrated for economic purposes. In the early years of the airport project, the visionaries would have been very familiar with the writings of John Healy, his championing of rural Ireland and his book Nobody Shouted Stop.” The social reason was one, the industrial development of the region was another, Cregan says, giving full credit by the way to politicians for the grants for the airport. But I would suggest there is an overwhelming third reason: Kerry needs increasingly not just to be connected to Dublin, which has failed it, but directly to Europe and North America, so it can bypass Dublin. Unfortunately, the Dublin-centric view only sees the road to Dublin, and the need to connect with Dublin. Kerry in its increasing reliance on tourism and hopefully foreign investment has at least as great a need to be nearer Berlin and probably Boston these days. And on this note, the Cantillon column might need to reflect on that key correspondence through history and before the foundation of this State, between Kerry and Europe, whether it is via Daniel O’Connell or Richard Cantillon. Like O’Connell, who was educated in France, Cantillon emigrated to France, not Dublin, and it was there he developed his economic theories. Dublin has had plenty of time to give Kerry opportunities and a fighting chance over the past 100 years. It has failed to do so. It is time now for Kerry to fly solo in a real sense and time to recognise the reason for the need of the airport is not just economic need. As Tralee Chamber Alliance argues, it is more, not less, investment that is needed for Kerry, “an airport with direct flights to seven destinations: London Luton, London Stansted, Frankfurt-Hahn, Berlin Schönefeld SXF, Alicante and Faro (summer) with Ryanair, and to Dublin with Aer Lingus Regional offering connections to the United States and Middle East.”

Blue Pool Issue Taken Up At Council Level Words: Anne Lucey Now it is refreshing to see the state of the Blue Pool taken up at council level, by former mayor of Killarney Niall Kelleher (pictured). He has put a motion the council write to the NPWS management to arrange a meeting about issues in Killarney National Park and to also discuss the neglect of the Blue Pool Walkway. The motion was passed and Cllr Kelleher says what is envisaged is quarterly meetings between the Killarney MD and the NPWS. “We need to have a conversation about the Blue Pool and about a number of issues with the NPWS and we need a joint strategy,” Cllr Kelleher said. Let’s see what happens, in a week in which one of the leading deer societies published a picture of 300 deer in

A Proud Day For Athletic As New Pitch Is Unveiled
FAI chief John Delaney and Junior Minister for Sport Brendan Griffin were on hand on Monday night to officially open Killarney Athletic’s new state-of-the-art all weather training pitch. It was a huge moment for Athletic and their tireless officers who, under the guidance of Chairman Mike O’Shea, have worked so hard to make this dream a reality. In 2017, Minister Griffin announced that Athletic would receive €41,000 towards the project as part of the sports capital grant scheme and that figure was matched by the FAI earlier this year. An all-weather pitch has long been on the agenda for the Blues and last year’s league and cup double winners can now boast facilities to rival any team in the county.

UHK Trolley Figures Reach New High 300 University Hospital Kerry patients were left on trolleys in August, 130 more than in the same month last year. There were 7,911 patients on trolleys nationally but, worryingly, the numbers for Tralee were well above the national average. On Tuesday, August 28 alone there were 27 people on trolleys at UHK, the third highest daily figure since records began in 2004.

Fans Flock To Kilcummin For Minor Homecoming The 2018 Kerry minor panel made history last weekend by becoming the first ever men’s football team to win five All-Irelands in a row and they were given a raucous reception at a homecoming ceremony in Kilcummin on Monday night. Hometown heroes Paul O’Shea and sub keeper Keith O’Leary paraded the Tom Markham Cup across the pitch where they honed their skills and they were subsequently joined on the big stage by teammates, management, backroom team and officials. It was a special moment also for fellow Kilcummin man James Foley, who is one of Peter Keane’s selectors. The massive crowd in attendance gave the lads a hero’s welcome and, as always, it was a great opportunity for the young supporters to catch a glimpse of their idols. Kerry were tipped to beat Galway in Croke Park but the weight of expectation, which was intensified by the furore surrounding the unprecedented “drive for five”, didn’t seem to bother them one bit. Fittingly, captain fantastic Paul O’Shea ran the show for the Kingdom and with outstanding performances from the excellent Killian Falvey and Paul Walsh in the forward division, Peter Keane’s young guns eventually ran out four-point winners. Congratulations to all involved on Sunday - and throughout the past five years - on a truly remarkable achievement. Paul O’Shea, Peter Keane and Keith O’Leary lift the Tom Markham Cup.

Danú At The Brehon Serves Up Free Fish To Kids For September
Danú At The Brehon Head Chef Chad Byrne.
Chef Chad Byrne and his team are celebrating the nationwide initiative Kids Seafood September by serving free fish dishes to kids under 12 years of age. Throughout September, families are invited to dine in Danú at The Brehon where kids will get to chance to tickle their taste buds with a choice of fish dishes while parents do not have to shell out on the cost of their kids’ meals. For every adult main course ordered, children will have the choice of dishes including mini creamy chowder, mini fish sliders, deep fried scampi or mussels with organic pasta. “When I cook mussels at home, my daughters’ friends think they’re gross. I hope that by having children taste the very best of fresh Irish seafood that I can get them to try something new and hopefully get them to think about seafood differently,” explains Chad Byrne, Head Chef at The Brehon. Kids Seafood September is the brainchild of Gaz Smith of Michael’s Restaurant in Dublin, who has made it his personal mission to get Irish kids eating seafood. Kids Seafood September at Danú in The Brehon is kindly supported by Star Seafoods in Kenmare. It is available throughout September but pre-booking is essential. Call 064 307000 to book.

Dolores Died By World Leaders Say Russia Approved Poisoning Drowning, Inquest Hears
Cranberries front woman Dolores O’Riordan died by drowning due to alcohol intoxication, an inquest at Westminster Coroner’s Court has heard. The Limerick singer, who died suddenly on January 15 aged 46, was found submerged in the bath in her room at London’s Park Lane Hilton hotel. O’Riordan died as a result of a “tragic accident”, the coroner said. She had no injuries or evidence of self-harm, and had drunk an excessive amount of alcohol, expert witnesses said. She had been in the Park Lane Hilton hotel as part of a recording trip ahead of a 2018 tour. PC Natalie Smart, who attended the scene, told the inquest: “I saw Mrs O’Riordan submerged in the bath with her nose and
mouth fully under the water.” The inquest heard that there were empty bottles in the room - five miniature bottles and a bottle of champagne - as well as containers of prescription drugs with a quantity of tablets in each container. Toxicology tests showed only “therapeutic” amounts of medication in O’Riordan’s blood, but showed up 330mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood - meaning she was more than four times over the 80mg legal limit for driving. The inquest was attended by O’Riordan’s mother, brother and sister-in-law. She split from her husband of 20 years, Don Burton, in 2014. She and Burton, who is the former tour manager of Duran Duran, have three children together.
The US, France, Germany and Canada have agreed with the UK that the Russian government “almost certainly” approved the poisoning of ex-spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia in Salisbury. They have urged Russia to provide full disclosure of its Novichok programme. At a UN Security Council meeting to discuss the attack, Russia dismissed evidence presented by the UK as “lies”. In a lengthy rebuttal, Russia accused the UK of “disgusting anti-Russian hysteria”. The UK has named two men believed to be from Russia’s military intelligence service, the GRU, as the main suspects. Theresa May told the Commons on Wednesday that the suspects had en-
tered the UK on Russian passports using the names Alexander Petrov and Ruslan Boshirov. She told MPs the poisoning was “not a rogue operation” and was “almost certainly” approved at a senior level of the Russian state. The Kremlin called these accusations “unacceptable”. The statement from Mrs May, Emmanuel Macron, Angela Merkel, Donald Trump and Justin Trudeau said: “We, the leaders of France, Germany, the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, reiterate our outrage at the use of a chemical nerve agent, known as Novichok, in Salisbury on March 4.” The leaders welcomed progress in the investigation, but urged those with more information to go to UK authorities.

Trump Had Inauguration Crowd Photos Edited

scramble within the National Park Service (NPS) on January 21, 2017 after an early-morning phone call between Trump and the acting NPS director, Michael Reynolds. They also state that Sean Spicer, then White House press secretary, called NPS officials repeatedly that day in pursuit of the more flattering photographs. It was not clear from the records which photographs were edited and whether they were released publicly. The newly disclosed details were not included in the inspector general’s office’s final report on its inquiry into the saga, which was published in June last year and gave a different account of the NPS photographer’s actions. By the time Trump spoke on the telephone with Reynolds on the morning after the inauguration, then-and-now pictures of the national mall were circulating online showing that Trump’s crowd fell short of Obama’s. A reporter’s tweet containing one such pair of images was retweeted by the official NPS Twitter account.

A government photographer edited official pictures of Donald Trump’s inauguration to make the crowd appear bigger following a personal intervention from the president, according to newly released documents. The photographer cropped out empty space “where the crowd ended” for a new set of pictures requested by Trump on the first morning of his presidency, after he was angered by images showing his audience was smaller than Barack Obama’s in 2009. The detail was revealed in investigative reports released to the Guardian under the Freedom of Information Act by the inspector general of the US interior department. They shed new light on the first self-inflicted crisis of Trump’s presidency, when his White House falsely claimed he had attracted the biggest ever inauguration audience. The records detail a

A fisherman in Tyrone has found what he believes to be the skull and antlers of a Great Irish Elk after it became entangled in his fishing net on Wednesday. Raymond McElroy said he thought it was a piece of ‘black oak’ rather than the remains of the animal which went extinct just over 10,000 years ago while he was fishing on Lough Neagh. McElroy is hoping to confirm his find as a Great Irish Elk soon and is keep-
ing the skull at his home in the meantime. He said that he was getting a lot of texts and calls from people who are interested in buying the elk skull but he had not received any official offers yet. McElroy added that the find was found close to where the lower jaw bone of an Irish Elk was pulled from the water in 2014 so he believes that it could be from the same animal.
Buffalo Backsides Too “Provocative” For Censors You might expect Iran’s state broadcaster to remove images of women eating cucumbers on television - but the backsides of buffaloes and the outlines of ears under headscarves? Censors in the conservative Islamic republic have banned these from screens over the years and exasperated TV production staff are now taking to social media to laugh about them. TV writer Amir Mehdi Jule kicked off a campaign on Instagram with the hash-
tag #Censorship_and_I, talking about the challenges of depicting women’s bodies. Screenwriter and director Mostafa Kiayee recounted the time he had to edit a nature documentary on water buffalo. “They sent a list of corrections and the first one was to cut a shot of buffalo walking out of the water. When I asked for the reason, they answered ‘buffaloes walking out of the water from behind is provocative’.”

Minister Warns Councils That Housing Progress Must Be Made Housing Minister Eoghan Murphy has warned a handful of councils that he will step in and use emergency powers if they fail to make progress on the housing crisis. The minister told reporters at the Fine Gael party think-in in Galway today that he has written to “two or three” local authorities that he feels are not taking sufficient action. “When we see the number of families in emergency accommodation today and tonight it is unacceptable. That is why I wrote to local authorities, certain local authorities, to tell them that there are changes they need to make immediately and if they don’t I will have recourse to emergency powers within my department to step in and take control of some of those functions. So I can be sure we are working with the best people possible, so that we can get those people out of emergency accommodation and get them into homes.” He said when he looked at the numbers over the last number of months and the number of people in emergency ac-
commodation, he saw that “certain local authorities” are not doing enough. “[When] I still haven’t seen the solutions coming through and I am still hearing excuses that are unacceptable, I now have no choice but to tell them either use their emergency powers and if they won’t I’ll be stepping in,” said Murphy.
Cop Who Tasered 11-Year-Old Girl “Violated Policy” A Cincinnati police officer who deployed a stun gun on a 11-year-old girl suspected of shoplifting violated department policy, investigators say. Officer Kevin Brown, 55, was also heard on bodycam video telling the girl that actions like hers were “why there’s no grocery stores in the black community”. His comment prompted an internal probe that found he violated four policies. Officer Brown, 55, had been working as a theft prevention officer at a supermarket when the incident occurred. Cincinnati police released bodycam footage of the August 6 arrest as part of a use of force report, showing the girl, who is African-American, crying as Taser barbs are removed from her back. “Quite frankly, I believe the officer violated our policy. I believe the use of force was unnecessary in this particular circumstance,” said Police Chief El-
liott Isaac, who will determine how Mr Brown will be punished after an internal department hearing. The report found that Mr Brown, who is also African-American, violated policies including making prejudiced comments, failing to turn on his body camera until after he used his Taser, failing to warn the girl before deploying his stun gun and using force when it was not necessary. According to police guidelines, officers are required to use the least amount of physical force against a child. The girl’s family admitted she was shoplifting, according to the report. It found that she had about $50 (£38) worth of goods in her backpack when she was arrested. Officer Brown, who has since been placed on restricted duties, defended his comments about grocery stores, arguing that he was supported by statistics and that his remarks were unbiased.
Movie Star Burt Reynolds Dies Aged 82
Burt Reynolds, the wisecracking 1970s movie heartthrob and Oscar nominee, has died at the age of 82. According to Us Weekly, he passed away in a Florida hospital of a heart attack. The moustachioed megastar had undergone heart bypass surgery in 2010. Reynolds is survived by his son, Quinton. He shot to fame in 1972’s Deliverance, and also starred in Smokey and the Bandit, Boogie Nights and The Cannonball Run. The veteran actor’s agent, Todd Eisner, told NBC News his passing was “heartbreaking”. Reynolds died at the Jupiter Medical Center in Florida, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Arnold Schwarzenegger tweeted that Reynolds was one of his heroes. Reynolds’ breakout movie role was in 1972’s Deliverance, which told the tale of four men attacked by a madman in rural Georgia. The box office hit netted three Oscar nominations and made

North Korean Man Charged With NHS Cyber Attack
e o d s s
US prosecutors have charged a North Korean man alleged to have been involved in creating the malicious software used to cripple the UK’s National Health Service. The 2017 incident left NHS staff reverting to pen and paper after being locked out of
computer systems. Park Jin Hyok is said to be linked to the Lazarus Group. The hacking collective is also blamed for the hack on Sony Pictures in 2014. The US Department of Justice alleged the North Korean-backed cyber group had caused major damage.
“The scale and scope of the cyber-crimes alleged by the complaint is staggering and offensive to all who respect the rule of law and the cyber norms accepted by responsible nations,” said the Assistant Attorney General for National Security, John Demers.
Reynolds a Hollywood sex symbol. His career peaked in 1977 when he played roguish trucker Bo Darville in action comedy Smokey and the Bandit. Only Star Wars grossed more at the box office that year. But his roles went into freefall in the 1980s and his finances ruined by failed investments in restaurants and a Florida football team. He made a 1997 comeback with his role as a porn film director in Boogie Nights, which won him an Oscar nomination. Reynolds went on to marry actress Loni Anderson in 1988, but that also ended bitterly in 1993. After the divorce from Carne, Reynolds filed for bankruptcy with $11m in debts. In 2014, he was forced to sell many prized memorabilia, including his Golden Globe award. But when Vanity Fair journalist Ned Zeman asked him what he would have done differently, Reynolds said: “I would have spent more money and had a lot more fun.”
North Korea routinely denies being involved in hack attacks attributed to them. Mr Park is charged with one count of conspiracy to commit computer fraud and abuse, and wire fraud. Prosecutors said Mr Park was believed to be in North Korea.

IT Tralee Offers Free Hospitality Programmes If you are currently working or considering a career in the hospitality sector, there’s never been a better time to train and upskill. Through the Springboard+ programme, IT Tralee are offering a number of free and 90% funded programmes in the tourism and hospitality sector. Skills shortages in this sector have been identified in recent reports and the Springboard+ initiative, which up until now was targeted at unemployed people re-entering the workforce, is available to all people irrespective of their employment status. Programmes in the hospitality sector being funded by Springboard+ at IT Tralee include: a Certificate in Culinary Arts (100% funded); a Certificate in Food and Beverage Operations (100% funded); a Diploma in Restaurant Operations Management (90% funded); and a BA (Honours) in Hotel Management (90% funded). Speaking from IT Tralee, Vice President for Development, Research and External Engagement Bríd McElligott said: “This Springboard+ offering gives people of all ages the chance to avail of a very exciting pathway to a full and rewarding career in the hospitality sector. If you are a chef, bartender, waiter, manager, receptionist, porter, concierge or someone who would like to work in the tourism trade, we urge you to get in touch today to explore how you can increase your qualifications, in a flexible and supportive learning environment.” Niamh O’Shea, General Manager of Killarney Park Hotel and Chairperson of the Irish Hotels Federation (IHF) echoes this sentiment. “Given the severe shortage of chefs at all levels, a shortage of professional
front line staff in food and beverage, and the need for professional development of middle and senior managers, there’s never been a better time to upskill through a Springboard+ funded programme and avail of the wonderful job opportunities that exist in the sector,” she said. Owner of award winning restaurant and wedding venue Sol y Sombra, Cliodhna Foley, explains why she encouraged her staff to upskill through Springboard+ programmes at IT Tralee: “While it’s a very positive thing that Ireland is approaching full employment, it also means that it is becoming increasingly difficult to attract and retain top talent. We are delighted to support two members of our manage-
ment team in undertaking the Diploma in Restaurant Operations Management and Certificate in Social Media for Digital Marketing in order to ensure they continue to grow in their chosen professions and bring new ideas, creativity and practical skills that benefit the business.” Springboard+ Programmes through the Hotel, Culinary Arts and Tourism department at IT Tralee are delivered on a part-time basis over an academic year. For more information on all programmes including application deadlines, availability, eligibility and start dates, please contact IT Tralee’s dedicated Life Long Learning team on 066 7191701 or email lifelonglearning@ittralee.ie.

September Brings The Prospect Of Bulbs Words: Debby Looney
Garden Magic
V
No matter the time of year, there is always something to be excited about when it comes to the garden. For me, in September it is the prospect of bulbs – the finding, wishing, sourcing and planting of little ‘plant bombs’, as I’ve heard one little man call them! I like finding unusual varieties and since internet shopping has become a way of life, I have more than enough choice! It is definitely spring when the daffodils come out. I enjoy seeing the yellow trumpets, but have not a single yellow daffodil myself. I like the white ones such as ‘Mount Hood’, or white with a pink trumpet, ‘Precocious’, or an open white with orange, ‘Trepolo’, or peach blooms, ‘Mallee’. Dwarf daffs are also an important sector of this range – ‘Rip van Winkle’ is a small spikey
little daff, or N. bulbocodium, which has a trumpet shaped like a petticoat, ‘Spoirot’ being a lemon yellow version of this variety. Tulips are a must when it comes to spring colour. There are of course the basic red, yellow and orange, which are beautiful, but there is a world of exciting and vibrant colours out there. ‘Slawa’ is a dark orange with purple flames, and ‘Evergreen’ is deep green. ‘Night rider’ is cerise with green stripes, ‘Vincent van Gogh’ is burgundy with a frilly edge, ‘Belicia’ is a double white with a pink edge on the petals and ‘Yellow Crown’ is the subtlest shade of primrose yellow. The choices are mind-boggling! Crocus also come in an ever-increasing range of colours, my choice this year is C. sieberi ‘Firefly’, a mauve coloured speci-

men with a bright yellow throat. ‘Romance’ is going into pots. It is a buttery colour. Yum! Some unusual bulbs I like are Camassia, which are tall (about 80cm) and have spikes of blue, white or mauve flowers, and look great in a border when there are not many tall flowers out yet. They are a fantastic cutflower also. Nectaroscordum, also named Mediterranean Bells, is an unusual plant in Irish gardens even though it thrives here. The flowers reach to about 70cm and consist of small purple brown bells with green throats. They are very pretty and again excellent cut flowers. For a very bright and different flower, try Dichelostemma idimaia, aka Californian firecracker. It grows to about 45cm and has bright red florets. Alliums, or ornamental onions, are always
a good choice, and some different varieties to try are: ‘Silver Spring’ – white with pink, ‘Red Mohican’ – burgundy with a tufty top or Pink Jewel, which is a soft pink. All bulbs like a well-drained situation if possible, and as a general rule of thumb plant them twice the depth of the height of the bulb. For advice or garden consultations, call Debby on 086 6088156 or email barnhillgarden @gmail.com. Evening garden classes resume at the Community College in September. To book a place please contact the college. Classes are suitable for beginners and enthusiasts alike and cover all aspects of gardening including design, plant science and knowledge, fruit and veg, lawn care etc. Organic options discussed where possible.

RIGHTS OF WAY
A Right of Way is a right for one land-owner to gain access to his or her land or passing over property owned by a third party. This is very common in rural Ireland where very often pockets of land are intertwined amongst a number of land-owners. It is therefore a common feature of agricultural lands but also dwellings that have been built abutting the roadways that have not been taken in charge by the local authority. A road or laneway is taken in charge by the local authority when it becomes formally responsible for its maintenance or upkeep and is formally adopted as a road in charge.
A right of way can be established either by Long User or by way of agreement. Traditionally generations of landowners have gained access to their lands by passing and repassing over an access by way of continuous use without interruption. In addition to this a right of way can by agreement be granted by one landowner to the other. Traditionally for conveyancing purposes if a right of way was not registered on a land-owners title a Declaration of Long User would be furnished to show that the land-owner gave access to his lands for a period of twenty years without interruption. The Land Law and Conveyance Act, 2009, has attempted to simplify the area of rights of way. Under the 2009 Act, a person can claim a right of way if they can prove continuous use for a period of twelve years. Initially the Land and Conveyancing Law Reform Act, 2009, set a deadline of the 30th of November 2012 for rights of way to be registered. This has been amended and extended under the Civil Law (Miscellaneous
Provisions) Act, 2011, which has extended the deadline for registration until the 30th of November 2021. The procedure at present has therefore been simplified in respect of the registration of rights of way. In the event that the parties agree to register a right of way an application form together with a marked Land Registry Compliant Map can be lodged to the Property Registration Authority together with payment of a fee and the Property Registration Authority will register the right of way.

Ahead of the new baskteball season, Adam Moynihan speaks to Scotts Lakers’ new American recruit Seán O’Brien about coming to Killarney, his Irish roots and beating not beating the buzzer
Welcome to Killarney. When did you arrive? I got here Wednesday morning. I arrived in Killarney around 1pm. First impressions of the town? How are you settling in? It’s a beautiful town. Not too big but I still managed to get lost a couple of times walking around today. I’m still a bit jet-lagged but so far it’s going great. What made you want to come to Ireland? The reason I’m here is because I was given the opportunity to play for the Scotts Lakers but I’m an IrishAmerican so I’ve always wanted to visit here. I’ve heard a lot about it, a lot of my family have been here, so it was a great opportunity. I couldn’t pass up on it. Have you heard much about the Irish league? No, to be honest. Nothing really at all. I’m kinda just jumping right into it not knowing too much. Tell us a bit about your background. You mentioned that you’re Irish-American. With a name like Seán O’Brien you’d have to be… My grandmother’s side of the family is from Ireland and is still in Ireland. I believe they’re in Mayo and Kildare. But other than that, the rest of my family all live in Philadelphia, which is where I’m from. How would you describe yourself as a player? I like to see myself as a player who can really do it all. I try to always be the hardest worker, I can defend anyone on the court and on offence I do whatever the team needs. I can be a facilitator or I can take over games by scoring the ball. Whatever the team needs, is what I aim to do. Who’s the best player you’ve ever played with? Probably Steve Vasturia who went to Notre Dame. I played ball with him growing up. And I worked out with Jameer Nelson, who was in the NBA, for a whole summer. Who’s the best athlete you’ve ever played with? In high school we had a 6’9” player named Mike McGlinchey who’s now in the NFL. He’s an offensive lineman for the 49ers. Who was your toughest ever opponent? My freshman year of college we played at Ohio State and we played D’Angelo Russell, who is a superstar in the NBA now. So I’d say him. What’s your proudest sporting moment? This past year at Colgate, it was the first time we made it to the postseason in 20 years. The fact that I helped lead my team to that is probably my proudest moment. And the most embarrassing? Also this past year, we were down two points with 0.7 seconds left against Marist. They throw the ball in. I steal the ball. Shoot from half court. Make it. The whole team celebrates, going crazy. Storm the court. And then they review it… and I didn’t get it off on time. Sick. If you had to compare yourself to an NBA player, who would it be? Steve Nash maybe? There’s also a guy on the 76ers called TJ McConnell. He plays back-up point guard for them now but he’s a high motor guy and he’s put up some really nice numbers for the Sixers. I think I’m pretty comparable to him. If you could go for a drink with any three people, living or dead, who would they be? LeBron James, Steve Jobs and Warren Buffett. What are your five favourite sports in order? Are you into other sports besides basketball? Yeah. For most of my life, soccer was my main sport. Nowadays I’d say my favourite sports to watch are
Seán O’Brie n
basketball, then football, then hockey, then soccer and then baseball. Have you seen any Irish sports before? One of my good buddies back home plays Gaelic football in Philadelphia and I watched this year’s championship. What’s the best sporting moment of all time? For me it was this past year when the Eagles won the Super Bowl for the first time in their history. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? “Never be outworked.” Do you have any nicknames? Some of my buddies call me ‘Cray’ but most people stick with Seán. Do you have any superstitions? Not really. I’m more of a routine guy. If I get in a routine and I play well then I stick with that routine. But not really superstitious. Is there an app on your phone you couldn’t live without? Right now it’s WhatsApp because I can’t contact anyone because I don’t have an Irish phone number. Other than that, Snapchat probably. What’s your most-used emoji?
What sort of music do you listen to? Everything. Depending on the mood, I listen to rap, country, oldies, rock… You name it. Any favourite artists at the moment? I’m a big Meek Mill fan. He’s a rapper from Philadelphia. Free Meek Mill! He’s free now! He is, thank God. What would you sing at karaoke? American Pie by John McLean. Classic. Who would play you in a movie about your life? An actor named Freddie Highmore. A lot of people say he’s like my long lost twin. And last one… Can you tell me a joke? Alright. Why couldn’t the bike stand up by itself? I don’t know. Because it was two-tired. Good one! Thanks Seán. All the best for the coming season. Thanks.

This increasingly popular exercise regime incorporates the precision of Pilates, the technique of ballet, the alignment of yoga and the strength from sports conditioning The combined elements of the different methods fuse to form a challenging and exciting workout, which stretches and sculpts the muscles, whilst burning fat. Balance, strength, stamina, power, flexibility and motor control all improve. This workout produces dramatic results that sculpt and redefine the entire body, without even being a dancer. He has a truly enviable track record when it comes to helping men and women achieve their weight- loss goals as well as optimum health and fitness levels. “Weight loss is my area of expertise,” he said. “I explain everything in detail and spend up to an hour and a half on the initial consultation. A key point is understanding why you eat, and how often. You have a better chance of keeping weight off and maintaining a healthy weight when you understand the process fully.” Motivation is also a key aspect of shedding pounds and maintaining a healthy weight. “Being accountable to someone every week and getting the right advice and being able to eat normal, everyday foods is what sets this plan apart, whether you want to lose a few pounds or several stone,” said Pat. “Everyone needs a bit of encouragement.” It is €140 for the 12-week course. This includes the hour-long consultation before you commence the 12-week weight-loss programme.

Motoring Briefs... Futuristic BMW I-NEXT SUV Previewed
V
The German carmaker’s i sub-brand has started its teaser campaign for its most important model; the all-new electric SUV will be on sale in 2021. In an attempt to spoil the reveal of its most direct rival, the Mercedes-Benz EQC, BMW has begun teasing its new iNEXT concept head of the all-electric SUV’s launch later this year.
Lexus Delivers Electric Shock Lexus told the world five years ago that it would expand into hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles, but that promise appears to have been shelved. At last week’s global launch of the Lexus UX, Lexus Canada director Jennifer Barron told journalists that every Lexus model line would feature an ‘electrified’ variant by 2025, echoing a similar commitment by its parent company Toyota.

Lancia Delta Integrale Back From The Dead
In the motoring press, a week doesn’t go by without the introduction, or reintroduction, of a classic car legend. Last week we featured the all-electric Jaguar E-type. And this week is no different. Automobili Amos has given Lancia’s legendary Delta Integrale the full retromod treatment. Beginning with a Delta chassis as a base, a complete reworking of the original hot hatch involved extensive use of carbon-fibre and plenty of engineering upgrades. The biggest change was to weld shut the rear doors. Under the bonnet, the Lancia’s original 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder remains in place and is healthier than ever thanks to a new intercooler, revised air-intake and freer-breathing exhaust. The result is that the Delta Futurista produces around 246kW and, combined with the standard car’s all-wheel drive and featherweight 1250kg kerb weight, the born-again Lancia should be capable of hitting 100km/h in around four seconds. Inside, Automobili Amos has again been
careful to pay homage to the 1980 original with period-looking Recaro Alcantara seats and a colour scheme that’s carefully blended with plenty of cool carbon-fibre parts. The Delta Futurista, meanwhile, has been priced from €330,000. First produced back in 1987 to help Lancia homologate a vehicle to compete in the World Rally Championship, the road-going Delta Integrale evolved over the next number of years to become one of the fastest, best-handling cars of all time. In motorsport, meanwhile, the Delta Integrale came close to being near unbeatable, scoring wins on 46 WRC events and racking up an incredible six consecutive manufacturers’ titles.

To Lissivigeen N.S., Dr.Crokes, Barraduff Community Field Organization & Spa GAA who gave so generously to the club this year by allowing us to use their excellent facilities and especially to the people of Killarney and the surrounding areas who kindly contributed to our bag packing and street collections. Without a community’s help, clubs would not survive.

This strong support was greatly appreciated and meant for the first time in 34 years – the Killarney Camogie Club was in a position to send our U14 team to the All-Ireland Feile na nGael in Connaught, in June of this year. We were also able to purchase some much-needed equipment for the club. Next year, we will also be putting in place a Club Development Officer to help promote and coach Camogie in our local schools.

Join Us For A Free Toning Tables Trial Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio has prided itself for over 25 years on enabling women to look and feel their best. With September already upon us, it is now as important as ever to look and feel good. Anyone who has enjoyed and over-indulged this summer (and who hasn’t?) will feel under pressure to rid the body of those extra inches and unwanted toxins that have found their way onto our system. Here at Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio we have a full set of toning tables based on a Pilates style workout. Uniquely, these machines are suitable for all weights, ages and fitness levels. As the toning tables are non-impact we can say with confidence they are suitable for all. Beginners are strongly recommended to join us for a free trial. The toning tables provide a full body workout over six different machines in a short space of time. Full body measure-
ments and weights are confidentially recorded so we can track your progress and help you anyway we can. If you want an overall reduction on a specific stubborn area then a Eurowave course is for you. Over a short course of 12 sessions at 18 minutes each, you can lose a dress size with Eurowave. Weight and measurements are also recorded confidentially to track your results. • For more info or a trial, call Jill on 064 6632966.

Bodyguard Becomes The Biggest New Drama On British TV
Terror thriller Bodyguard has become the biggest new drama on British television in more than a decade, the BBC has said. The BBC One series - starring Keeley Hawes as the Home Secretary and Richard Madden as the officer assigned to protect her - has achieved consolidated viewing figures of 10.4 million for its first episode. This is the highest launch figure for any new drama across all UK channels since 2006, the corporation said. The series, written and created by Line Of Duty’s Jed Mercurio, kicked off on Au-
gust 26, when it scored the highest overnight audience for a drama launch this year by more than one million viewers. It drew an average overnight rating of 6.7 million and an audience share of 35%, the BBC said, and peaked with 6.9 million viewers. On BBC iPlayer, the show has broken drama debut records - with episode one getting 2.2 million requests in its first seven days - and so far over all. Bodyguard continues on BBC One this Sunday at 9pm.

Netflix - Magic For Humans
“Magic for Humans,” Netflix’s new six-part unscripted series hosted by magician Justin Willman, shows a vital appreciation for a comedic patience that takes the whole thing from a set of mild curiosities to a finely tuned exploration of what kind of magic can still command people’s attention.
Review: Fallen Lights – Last Train Home Fallen Lights are the latest band off the Mullingar conveyor belt, following on from The Blizzards, Niall Horan and The Academic, the four-piece Indie/Pop outfit who formed in college are made up of multi-instrumentalist music graduates Graham Dowling, Andrew
Cody, Jay Wiley and Joey Murray. Produced by Kodaline’s engineer Philip Magee their new single Last Train Home is definitely worth a listen and seeing as how the lads are regulars in Killarney you might even get a chance to catch them live soon too!
Willman is seemingly the perfect magician/ comedian hybrid prototype to pull off this kind of show, to help “Magic for Humans” exist in the perfect middle ground between comedy series and street magic special which can sustain a certain creative spark over the course of its six episodes.

1,856 Days - 30 Games - 5 All-Irelands Words: Adam Moynihan
The Kerry minors overturned a seven-point deficit to defeat Galway in Croke Park on Sunday and in doing so became the first ever men’s side to win five All-Ireland football titles in a row. It’s an unbelievable achievement by all involved, especially Peter Keane, Jack O’Connor and the backroom teams they’ve assembled over the past five years. To create five

new panels, virtually from scratch, and guide them to glory in five straight years is incredible. Let’s not forget that before this run there was a 20-year spell during which Kerry, with all of our great players, didn’t win a single minor All-Ireland crown. For further context, only six counties have won five or more All-Irelands in the tournament’s 89-year history. Ker-
ry now have 16, five more than their nearest rivals Dublin. Kerry were favourites heading into this decider but the milestone victory appeared to be in real jeopardy 25 minutes into the first half when Galway led by 1-8 to 0-4. The Kingdom responded well, however, and registered four of the last five scores of the half to cut the deficit to four. The reigning champions flew out of the traps in the sec-

ond period and when Darragh Rahilly pointed in the 42nd minute, the sides were level. It was nip and tuck thereafter but, impressively, Kerry seemed become more composed as the clock wound down. They kicked five of the last six scores to seal the win with Paul Walsh, Killian Falvey, Jack O’Connor and the outstanding Ruaidhrí ó Beaglaoich all finding the target.
Captain Paul Walsh and Kilcummin teammate Keith O’Leary lifted the trophy and rapturous scenes followed out on the field as players and management celebrated a hard-fought win. It may have been five in a row for Kerry but it was All-Ireland number one for this particular crop of young footballers and their hunger was in evidence throughout the 2018 campaign.
This has been (and hopefully will continue to be) a golden era for underage football in the county. The amount of talent coming through at minor level has been frightening and although there’s no way of knowing for sure how many of these lads will make the step up to senior, it promises to be an exciting few years for fans of Kerry football.

History-Making Minors Do It The Hard Way

Kerry created history in Croke Park on Sunday last and the impressive Ruaidhrí ó Beaglaioch lofted over some great points to turn the table on Galway. Keane for senior manager
The process to appoint a successor to Eamonn Fitzmaurice is well underway and the committee entrusted with getting a new Kerry senior boss will bring the name of a manager and his management to the county board delegates early next month. From the outset I have picked Peter Keane as my choice. I met Donie Buckley recently and discussed a probable role for him in the new Kerry set-up. He is very keen to get involved now that he has severed his commitments with Mayo. He is just waiting for a call up.
Dublin’s four-in-a-row
As expected Dublin proved too good for Tyrone in the senior final and gave done what Kerry did from 1978 to 1981. The Dubs’ sights are firmly set on rewriting the record books next year by completely the historic five-in-a-row.There is no one to stop them at the moment and it is a bit much to expect a new Kerry team to do a Séamus Darby on their hopes as early as 2019.
East Kerry 4-20 St Brendan’s 2-9
East Kerry had to line out without Kerry stars David Clifford and Daniel O Brien in this Kerry SFC tie in the Fitzgerald Stadium on Saturday last but they still had plenty of fire power to advance to the next round. I was very impressed with the high fielding midfielder Kieran Murphy. The Kilcummin man and Kerry junior winning captain lorded the exchanges and he had good back up from fellow Kilcummin man Kevin Gorman. They have good forwards who shot 4-20, which would install them as joint favourites with Dr Crokes for the Kerry title. Churchill’s Ivan Parker was the pick of the St Brendan’s forwards. East Kerry have a fine goalkeeper in Brendan Kealy, but I was not overly impressed by the East Kerry defence. They will face more searching tests. Seán O’Leary, the former Kerry minor, did shine.

East Kerry are safely through to the winners’ round following their championship opener against St Brendan’s on Sunday, despite being without the services of star forward David Clifford. Clifford, who is nursing a shoulder injury, was togged out and took part in the half-time show but his services weren’t required as his teammates romped to a comprehensive 15-point victory in the Park. Glenflesk trio Chris O’Donoghue, Jeff O’Donoghue and Lee O’Donoghue were also unavailable for the East against a Brendan’s team who were expected to leave their mark on this year’s championship. The Tralee side were understrength as well, however as key players Jack Barry and Stefan Okunbor were up the country. The absence of such pivotal players was sorely felt by their teammates who struggled to cope with East Kerry’s lively attack, and the crowd in attendance were left disappointed with a very one-sided affair. Paudie Clifford was a thorn in Brendans’ side all day and the Fossa forward notched 3-4 in a typically swashbuckling display, while Jack Sherwood and the superb Seán O’Leary wreaked havoc with their direct runs from deep. Kilcummin pair Kieran Murphy and Kevin Gorman dominated the midfield third and the result was never really in doubt from an early stage. In the end, the emphatic scoreline didn’t flatter East Kerry one bit. Their reward will be a tricky home fixture against Dingle in Round 2A. Dingle hammered Shannon Rangers in their first round tie with Kerry star Paul Geaney bagging two goals in the opening 20 minutes and the sharpshooting forward will require special attention if East Kerry are to prevail. There is the safety net of knowing that defeat wouldn’t signal the end of their 2018 championship campaign – the losers from the winners’ round will play the winners of the losers’ round next week – but manager Jerry O’Sullivan will be keen to take the direct route to the quarter finals. Elsewhere, the Killarney Legion will play Mid Kerry in Killorglin, holders Dr Crokes will host Rahilly’s in Lewis Road and beaten finalists South Kerry will face Austin
Stacks in Tralee. For everyone else (i.e. the eight teams in Round 2B), it’s do or die as another defeat would see them eliminated from the tournament. Rathmore v Kenmare Shamrocks is the stand-out tie of the losers’ round and it will be interesting to see if the reigning O’Donoghue Cup champions can bounce back from their defeat to old foes Legion in the first round.

Lakers All Set For Season Opener Following a successful debut season, Scotts Lakers St Pauls are looking forward to the new basketball campaign which commences this weekend. After an absence of nearly a decade, top-flight National League basketball returned to Killarney last year and the Lakers attracted record crowds to Killarney Sports Centre for their home games. The Killarney side certainly didn’t disappoint, enjoying a good cup run before bowing out at the semi-final stage to eventual winners Ballincollig. They then went on the secure the Division 1B Shield title. Scotts Lakers travel to Limerick this Saturday, September 8 for the opening game of the new season against LIT. The first home game will be on Saturday, September 15 against Fr Mathews (Cork) in Killarney Sports Centre at 7.30pm. Coach Cormac O’Donoghue is in charge of the Lakers again for the new campaign and his squad has been boosted by some considerable new signings. New American signing Seán O’Brien, a native of Lafayette Hill, Pennsylvania, arrived in Killarney this week and will replace the outgoing Harrison Deneka. O’Brien is a talented and skilful 6’2” player capable of filling a point guard or shooting guard role. He has just completed four years with Colgate University, who play in the top level NCAA Division 1. O’Brien capatined the side in his final year and scored 1,040 points in his career with Colgate. He won the Most Valuable Player Award in 2017 and 2018. O’Brien isn’t the first player from Colgate to come to Killarney. Irish-American and former Colgate player Tim Sullivan enjoyed a successful stint with Gleneagle Lakers in the mid-noughties. Another new addition for Scotts Lakers is Dutch power forward Papito Hersisia, who has experience from playing in Holland and Germany. His huge 6’8” frame and ability to dominate under the boards will give the
Lakers extra strength this season. Exciting shooting guard Dailian Mason from Birmingham is back with again after joining the squad during the middle of last season. An outstanding three-point shooter, Mason will give the Lakers that extra outside scoring threat. Cormac O’Donoghue and his squad of players have been in pre-season training for a number of weeks and it has been revealed that Mark Greene will captain the side this year. The Killarney native was the Lakers most consistent Irish player last season and will have another huge role to play in the campaign ahead. The squad is also expected to include local players Pádraig Lucey, Andrew Fitzgerald, Philip O’Con-

Rugby News ... Words: Liam Murphy Munster’s season proper kicked off last weekend with a comprehensive defeat of South African side the Toyota Cheetahs at Thomond Park in the first round of the PRO14. It was a fantastic day weather-wise, reminiscent of the finest days of the summer just gone, with blue skies and glorious sunshine. The match itself wasn’t much of a challenge for the home side as the Cheetahs were held scoreless by a much-improved Munster. The home side ran out 38–0 winners and the biggest cheer came when ex-Leinster man Joey Carbery made his much

nor, Cian Clernon, Dan Griffin, Dylan O’Sullivan and Irish-American Justin Tuason. Scotts Lakers are also delighted to add Séamus Brosnan, who has transferred from St Mary’s Castleisland, and former Blue Demons star Shane McCarthy. Both of these players have huge National League experience and will certainly help the Lakers to be more competitive again this season. Marko Bencic, son of St Paul’s Director of Coaching Vojkan Bencic, is also expected to join the squad as a European Bosman player. The Men’s Division One league will expand from 14 to 17 teams this season which means more fixtures for the Scotts Lakers. This will see the division split into two conferences – north and south – and sees three men’s teams in Limerick: LIT, UL Eagles and Limerick Celtics. Tolka Rovers and WIT Vikings will also join the league this year. Coach Cormac O’Donoghue is looking forward to the new campaign and is hopeful of building on the success of last year. “It was a successful debut season and it is important to build on that and try and progress even further this season,” he said. “It’s a bigger league now with more teams and extra fixtures. We’ll have 14 games before Christmas with four back-to-back double headers in what is quite a punishing schedule. It’ll be important to win our home games, gather some momentum and try and climb the league table.” New Lakers signing Papito Hersisia. Pic: Eamonn Keogh. Much-Improved Munster Slow Down Cheetahs anticipated debut for the men in red. Darren Sweetnam put in a storming display while newcomer Mike Haley, who arrived during the summer from Sale Sharks, had a poor enough game, but will settle in with time. All in all a good run for Johan Van Graan’s men. In other news for Munster, Conor Murray is struggling with his fitness having picked up an injury while training ahead of the new season. In a worrying development, Munster had to sign New Zealander scrum half Alby Mathewson on a four-month deal as cover. Very little
detail has emerged of the injury, although it is believed to be a neck injury. With big games like the one coming up against the All Blacks in November, the IRFU and Munster will be eagerly watching Murray’s progress. The other provinces mostly fared well in the opening round also, with Leinster narrowly defeating Cardiff and Ulster beating Scarlets with a last gasp penalty. Connacht were the only Irish side to lose, with a last minute penalty missing the mark. It’s good to have the rugby season back up and running with more matches every weekend and the Heineken Cup just around the corner!

It’s hard to get excited about international football these days; especially when no one wants to play for us. Alarmingly for Ireland, there were just eight Premier League players named in Martin O’Neill’s provisional squad for these friendlies and it’s likely to be a long night in Wroclaw for the Boys in Green. Sure we’ll watch it anyway.

On general sale September 11 (PS4/Xbox/PC/Switch, €60-70) NBA 2K19 is released next week and fans of the series will be hoping for some big changes. Last year’s instalment was universally panned, largely due to the ridiculous amount of microtransactions required to actually enjoy the game. Surely 2K won’t fleece us again?

Hamilton Wins In Front Of Unhappy Italian Fans Lewis Hamilton said home crowd “negativity” spurred him on to victory at Sunday’s enthralling Italian Grand Prix. The Brit overcame both Ferrari drivers and the partisan “tifosi” to clinch his sixth win of the 2018 Formula One season and extend his championship lead over Sebastian Vettel. It’s easy the understand the frustrations of the fans who have now endured eight years without a Ferrari win at Monza. Fernando Alonso’s victory at the 2010 Italian Grand Prix was the last time they took first place V

on home soil, with Mercedes continuing their recent dominance thanks to a fifth successive win. Despite starting second on the grid, Ferrari’s German driver Vettel soon found himself way down in 18th place after colliding with Hamilton as the Briton passed him during the opening lap. And Hamilton spoiled any hopes of a Ferrari party by passing Vettel’s teammate Kimi Raikkonen, who started in pole position, on lap 45 to take a race-winning lead.
Have A Story? Tell Adam Moynihan
It’s the fifth time Hamilton has won the Italian grand prix in the last seven years, equalling Michael Schumacher’s record number of wins at Monza and boosting his lead in the driver standings to 30 points. Vettel was forced to settle for a fourth-place finish. For Raikkonen, it was a 100th career podium finishing in front of Ferrari’s passionate “tifosi” fans. But the Finn will be frustrated to have not registered a first race win since 2013.

Killarney Toastmasters Club will recommence on Tuesday, 11th of September at 8pm in the Dromhall hotel in Killarney. The club welcomes guests and new members alike. Don’t delay! Become the speaker and leader you want to be. Confident, charismatic leaders weren’t born that way. As you progress in Toastmasters, you’ll get to practice your skills by organising and conducting meetings and motivating others to help you. Become a better negotiator. Gain trust. Inspire your team. PERSONAL STORY: I first joined Toastmasters in 2017 with hopes I would converse in different settings without stumbling on my words . I never realized the many benefits I would gain from becoming a member of the club. I have grown in confidence whilst also having lots of fun in the process. When I stepped up to give my first speech, I was full of dread and was tightly grabbing onto the lectern so that I would not collapse with fear. Aside from the various speeches, there is a topics section which gives everyone the opportunity to comment. The beauty of it all is that you can take it at your own pace. This for me was very important. If you think this might be your next challenge drop by to our next club meeting on Tuesday, September 11th at 8am, in the Dromhall hotel. You can find out more information via the Facebook page. facebook: Toastmasters Killarney. email: killarneytoastmasters@gmail.

Killarney Salmon & Trout Angling Club
September has indeed started with a flurry of activity on the angling front - no less that three club competitions taking place this month . Sunday last the club headed for the annual outing to Lough Currane in Waterville when in initial downpour conditions , thankfully later clearing off to give an overcast and breezy day , anglers gave a good account of themselves and the top five anglers on the day were as follows : 1) Donal Doherty, 2) DJ O Riordan, 3) Liam Buckley, 4) Anthony Griffin, 5) Mike Doody. The heaviest trout on the day fell to the rod of Donal Doherty. Our next outing is on home waters this weekend as the club competes in the Mar Loughlan competition . We had the honour of winning this competition last year amid strong opposition from neighbouring Cork Clubs and hopefully we will give a good account
of ourselves as we defend the title this year . As well as being part of the inter club event , the club competitors also compete for the Michael Fleming Memorial Cup . Entries for this competition are being taken up to Saturday night and can be made to any club officer. Also a quick reminder of our annual competition on Lough Lein taking place on Sunday 23rd September this year - many thanks to all the sponsors assisting us with this event and also to any cup holders that may not yet have returned trophies , please do so as soon as possible to allow us to prepare same for 2018 awards night.

Legion GAA
Senior County Championship Draw, Mid Kerry V Legion, (Date & Time to be confirmed). LEGION SENIOR LADIES JUNIOR B COUNTY CHAMPIONS 2018: Legion started off the game scoring 2 points in quick succession but Clounmacon/ Moyvane replied quickly with a point & goal, their forward Aoife Horgan proving her soccer prowess, they slotted in a couple more goals, it might’ve been more but for Kate McCarthy taking control to keep her at bay. Legion kept up the fight and scored 6 more points before half time. HT score Legion 8pts-C/M 3-05. In the second half, both teams found it difficult to score but when C/M scored another goal & point putting them a full 10 points clear, they decided to go on the defensive taking 12 of their players into their half. And this is where Legion pushed the boat out and fought for every kick out, winning the ball and running at C/M with conviction and it worked, slowly but surely point after point we got closer to them. With the tension growing more and more and deep in injury time, they pulled Sonia Smith to the ground and Elizabeth Mohan picked it up and lambasted into the back of their net giving us a one point lead when the ref blew the whistle. The effort Legion put in to the full hour and extra time of this game was immense! Well done girls. EAST KERRY LEAGUE DIV 1 U-12 GIRLS V FOSSA: Up against a very strong Fossa team who beat us convincely earlier in the year. We dominated from

early on with great attacking play and should have been further ahead at half time 1-5 to 2 pts up. Second half Fossa made a few switches and came more into it but some fierce defending by our defence kept us leading at the final whistle. All credit to Legion they stayed at it to the very end. Final score Legion 2-6 Fossa 1-6. U-16 GIRLS NEWS: We also had a visit from our own Kerry star Brian Kelly on Monday night at training and he had a talk with the girls on their game skills which was well received and appreciated. Thanks Brian as always you went down a treat. Sponsorship - The club would like to thank Irish Life for its generous sponsorship of a set of new Jersey’s for the our U-16’s girls. U11 Jerry Foley Memorial Blitz
MASTERCLASS IN SKILL & CAMARADERIE IN FIRIES U11 BLITZ: The 24th Annual Jerry Foley U11 (Memorial) Blitz took place in Pairc Eammon GAA Pitch last weekend. The U11 teams from Firies, Currow, Milltown/Castlemaine, Ballymac, Kerins O’Rahillys, Listry and Newmarket indulged everyone in attendance to a spectacle of skill, teamwork and camaraderie. All teams took part in a round robin series with the top two teams contesting the final. The two pitches in operation were hectic for the day. In the end, there could only be one winner with Ballymac taking home the spoils for the second year in a row after an exciting game against Currow. Neil Brendan Foley, Jerry’s son, presented the annual cup to the victorious Ballymac caption with great scenes of celebration. Tim Clifford, Firies GAA Coiste na nOg Chairman praised the visiting clubs, their mentors and parents/guardians for their efforts in ensuring their clubs attendance, thus ensuring its success. He also commended Firies GAA clubs’ volunteers and officers on their hospitality and generosity in time and effort. Finally, he expressed his gratitude to the Foley family who have resoundingly supported the continuation of this annual blitz. The future certainly looks bright for this prestigious tournament with the skill level that was on display throughout the day and we look forward already to next year.
