Report recommends multi-purpose facility for Áras Phádraig site

| By Michelle Crean

A new report which recommends a multi-purpose facility for Áras Phádraig site – which this publication proposed two years ago - is a very welcome addition to the town. In 2017, our team here at the Killarney

Advertiser designed an artist's impression for this site and we got a very positive response. We’re delighted to hear that the voice of the community is being heard.

A feasibility study and business plan for the site in Killarney has been completed following an extensive consultation and review process undertaken by the Killarney Municipal District of Kerry County Council. The report, completed by Exodea Consulting, recommends the development of a new integrated multi-purpose facility on the existing Lewis Road site. The core components of a new multi-use facility which would replace the existing facility would include: a contemporary arts and theatre space with rehearsal, exhibition and gallery facilities, meetOur artist's impression of the new ing rooms to be made available for Áras Phádraig which was proposed a range of community uses, an edin this publication in 2017 ucational space to accommodate

Family says ‘thank you’ after loss of beloved David Two benefit from kidney donation A Killarney family are finding comfort after the death of their loved one as they took the decision to donate two of his organs to help others have a better quality of life.

The late David Sheehy

The family of 25-year-old David Sheehy, who was a former student in St Brendan’s College, Killarney, say they are still devastated and saddened at his sudden passing in Australia on December 22. However, this week they want to say a public thank you to everyone who helped during what was the most difficult time in their lives. David’s mom Eileen Fitzgerald from Rockfield, Faha, said that the Fitzgerald and Sheehy families together would like to thank everyone for their support, sympathy and kindness on the recent loss of their beloved David. They would also like to thank everyone who donated so generously to the GoFundMe page which received a total of €37,145, a fundraising campaign to help cover the costs to bring David home to his final resting place. Excess funds were donated to the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust.

David had travelled to Australia in May where he was working as a carpenter. Two of his kidneys were donated to two people in Australia giving them an improved quality of life, Eileen, who received a letter from NSW Organ Donation and Tissue Donation Service recently, told the Killarney advertiser this week. “David’s kidneys were donated to help two people,” she said. “I didn’t hesitate about organ donation because I thought why not if you can. What’s the point of taking them with you. Organ donation is crucial. There are two families in Australia that will have a better future because of it.” She said getting the phone call on Friday, December 14, was a complete nightmare, but thanks to family, neighbours and friends and TD Michael Healy-Rae, she was able to get a flight to Australia almost immediately. “The family support has been enormous

the provision of training and skills courses and office space to suit the particular needs of Killarney town. A key recommendation is that any new facility should be financially self-sustaining and remain in the ownership of Kerry County Council. Cathaoirleach of the Killarney Municipal District, Cllr Niall Kelleher, said the feasibility study and business plan examined a number of options and scenarios for the redevelopment of the Áras Phádraig. “The acquisition of the property by the County Council on behalf of the people of the Killarney Municipal District represents a very exciting opportunity for the area,” he said. “This plan will form the basis on which we move forward with the development of this very important strategic site in Killarney town. It provides us with a number of options as well as financial projections which are designed to ensure that any new facility is sustainable financially. The elected members of the Killarney Municipal District have decided to set in train the development of masterplan for the Áras Phádraig site, including the adjacent Lewis Road carpark, to the benefit of the wider Lewis Road area and the town as a whole.” and the help from Michael Healy-Rae who sorted getting the visa to get me to Australia. My niece Ciara de Mordha travelled out with me and was my right and my left hand for the week we were there. I just want to thank David’s friends Padraig O’Leary from Gneeveguilla – he picked up us at the airport in Australia, sorted out our accommodation and both he and his girlfriend Shelly O’Connor stayed with us the whole week. David’s school friend Dan O’Sullivan from Knockeragh, Killarney, who lives in Melbourne, travelled to Sydney also. Kay Cronin from Kilcummin set up the GoFundMe page. And my partner Brendan, his brother Donal and wife Marie who live in Australia, were just brilliant. “You’d never imagine you’d be in a situation like that,” she said. “The support has been massive including the one-to-one care David received in the hospital.” Remembering David, who has a younger sister Ellen (9) and brother Breandán (8), she added that he was a good son who will be dearly missed. “He was full of life and full of fun. He was not a saint by any means - but we miss him terribly and his death has left a huge void in our lives forever.” Months Mind Mass for David takes place on Friday, February 15, in the Sacred Heart Church, Milltown, at 7pm. And all are welcome, she added.

VAT increase is a hard pill to swallow

Today (Friday) local businesses plan to blacken out their windows as part of a national protest against the Government’s unfair 23 percent VAT hike on health supplements. The sharp rise, which goes from zero to 23 percent - due to be implemented on March 1 - has left businesses and customers enraged – saying it will have a detrimental impact not only on customers who rely on supplements in order to maintain their health – but also to the local economy which will feel a direct impact of decreased sales. In Killarney, Tina Tynan, from Horan’s Health Stores, said they have a petition in store that loads of customers have already signed and today they’ll protest to let even more customers know. Also joining the campaign are staff from Milltown Organic Store who plan to blacken their windows from 2pm to 5pm. “We are part of the blackout today as it is ridiculous going from zero percent to 23 percent VAT in one go. It is a harsh increase,” Tina told the Killarney Advertiser. "How’s that going to affect customers if somebody is buying two products a week they now might only be able to afford one. “Some customers are shocked and upset and they want to sign the petition.” Tina said that she was disgusted with the Taoiseach Leo Varadkar’s recent comments the ‘food supplements very rarely do anything for our health. They are mostly snake oil and just cost people money’. "Leo’s comments are ridiculous. What about pregnant women needing to take folic acid, does he say that that doesn’t work for them, or those with osteoarthritis, or people low in calcium or iron?” Lillian Leask from the Milltown shop said

that all six women working there feel strongly about this issue. Today they will blacken out the windows and customers will join them outside in protest. “We have had a huge response from customers, most people are shocked at what is seen as a very ill-informed and backwards step for this country,” Lilian said. “We have a petition in store that has had over 200 signatures. We have invited customers and staff through Facebook to come to the shop at 3pm to stand outside holding banners and posters and pose for a photo to hopefully send the message that this is not a good move on the Government’s behalf and does not have the public's support in any way. “The Government sees that the supplement and vitamin sector is a rapidly growing one and therefore there is money to be made on it. The pharmaceutical industry has a particularly strong presence in Ireland and the alternative health option is a threat to their business, so they may well be lobbying for the VAT. I feel this VAT is entirely unfair and shows that the Government’s interest is purely in making money and not in preserving the health of its country. If they wanted people to be well, healthy and independent in their health choices they would not be proposing this tax. It's clear that keeping people sick and reliant on medication is good for business. We need consumers to send the message this is wrong and sign the online petition.” www.change.org/p/do-not-tax-healthfood-supplements

Local adventure company scoops two national awards Quest Killarney is a hot favourite for over 2000 participants each year and its organisers were delighted to scoop two major national awards this past week.

Launching the 'Recruitment Event for the Hotel Sector' on Monday afternoon were: Joanne Griffin (SKDP), Leona Hennessy (Cahernane House Hotel), Rebecca Kiely (Muckross Park Hotel), Milandi Basel (Great Southern Killarney) and Kathryn Cronin (Killarney Park Hotel). Photo: Michelle Crean

Unique recruitment drive for Killarney hotel sector An upcoming recruitment event, which will match employees with employers in major Killarney hotels, will be held in the town next month. The ‘Recruitment Event for the Hotel Sector’ will take place on Thursday, March 7, although the venue is yet to be confirmed. It is being organised by South Kerry Development Partnership CLG through the SICAP programme. It is aimed at matching potential employees with available jobs in seven of the major Killarney hotels. A significant number of jobs across all areas of the hotel sectors will be available through the event. SKDP’s Employer Liaison Officer Joanne Griffin explained that it will enable potential employees to meet directly with representatives of the hotels involved where they can discuss the positions available and showcase the skills which they can offer the potential employers. “Through registering the potential employees in advance it makes the event very efficient from everyone’s point of view as potential employees can be matched with employers who have available positions to suit the skillset of those attending,” Joanne said. Potential employees do not need to have specific experience in the hotel sector to attend, she added. “The event will enable people to try out different aspects of hotel work to see which areas they are interested in and it can progress from there,” she said.

Positions in areas such as accommodation, kitchen, reception, food and beverage as well as spa therapists will be available in the hotels involved including The Cahernane House Hotel, The Great Southern Hotel, The Muckross Park Hotel, The Lake Hotel, The Killarney Park Hotel, The Aghadoe Heights Hotel and the McSweeney Arms Hotel. People attending will get to meet with the heads of the relevant departments as well as with the Personnel Manager from the hotel with a view to formalising a job offer where both parties are interested to progress. SKDP CEO Noel Spillane said that this is the first time the Partnership has organised such an event and he is hopeful it will prove to be successful. “We are very focused in the Partnership in developing economic activity in South Kerry through assisting both jobseekers and employers through a range of training and support initiatives and we hope this event will prove to be another key support we can offer to both,” Noel said. Job seekers interested in attending the event must register in advance and they can do this by contacting Joanne Griffin by email; jgriffin@skdp.net, or by phone on 066 9761615, before 5pm on Friday, March 1.

Elite Event Management, based in Killarney, secured the ‘Best Outdoor/Adventure Event of 2018’ at the national Outsider Awards on Wednesday (January 30). Elite Events, who were in Dublin at the Sugar Club to receive their award, saw off stiff competition from 22 other shortlisted events to claim the prize. It’s the second national award for the company as they also topped the ‘Editor’s Choice, Event of the Year’ category for the Run Killarney half-marathon at the Running in Ireland Awards. Quest Killarney took place on October 6, and saw more than 2000 participants run, cycle and kayak around Killarney National Park. The event was credited as ‘a firm favourite on Ireland’s adventure calendar’ as the Outsider Awards recognise the very best in the outdoor and adventure scene in Ireland. Quest Killarney is an adventure race which involves racers running, cycling and kayaking through the Killarney National Park with routes taking in Strickeen Mountain, the Gap of Dunloe, Mangerton, Cardiac steps, Torc and more.

The event is topped off by a wonderful party-atmosphere at the finish line at the Gleneagle Hotel when participants celebrate and relive their memories of their day and achievements. Oliver Kirwan, Race Director was presented with the Outsider Awards prize by Fiona Monaghan of Fáilte Ireland, sponsors of the category. “We are over the moon to win this award for Quest Killarney and for the second year in a row a Quest event has taken the title which we are ecstatic about,” Oliver said. “Our team works hard all year round to deliver world-class events and this award goes to prove that we’re leading the way when it comes to event production in Ireland. We’re very fortunate to have lots of support locally in Killarney where Quest started out as the Killarney Adventure Race back in 2011. But we have spread right across the country since then and we’re looking forward to bringing lots more enjoyable events to our participants in the years ahead. Thanks to Outsider Magazine and Fáilte Ireland for this award and to everyone who voted for us to win.”

No prosecution following tragic accident | By Anne Lucey

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has directed there is to be no prosecution arising from a tragic accident in which an American couple travelling down the narrow Gap of Dunloe mountain pass in a trap last April were killed. One of Killarney’s most popular tourist trips ended in tragedy when their horse suddenly and inexplicably left the road and plunged several metres down a rocky ravine. Normand Larose, 62, originally from Canada but living in Phoenix, Arizona, and his partner Joy Few aged 64, also of Arizona, were killed on April 9 last. They were on an Easter family holiday with Ms Joy’s daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren travelling in a trap behind them. The inquest into the death of Mr Larose opened in Killarney last August for the purposes of issuing a death certificate. Death was the result of blunt force trauma with severe brain injury due to a fall onto rocks from a pony and trap on April 9, 2018, South and East Kerry Coroner Aisling Quilter said. The coroner adjourned the full inquest to when garda investigations would be concluded. The inquest into Ms Few will open in March, but again is likely to be adjourned as the period for an appeal of the DPP direction will not have been reached. The experienced jarvey escaped physical injury but was hospitalised for shock and the severely injured horse was put down at the scene. Gardai have now confirmed the DPP has directed no prosecution be brought. The gardai and family have a period of two months to appeal that direction. However, this was essentially a freak and

Kerry footballer Paul Murphy with champion greyhound 'Giovan Astral' and his owner David Fleming, Gneeveguilla, centre, launching the Sliabh Luachra Wind Aware Group 'Night at the Dogs'. Also in front from left were: Danny Fleming, Rachel Ware, Ellen O'Keeffe, Fiona Fleming and Declan Dowling (Kingdom Greyhound Stadium). Weather conditions were good and speed or erratic driving were not factors. Drone and other activity has been ruled out, it is understood. A separate investigation by the Health and Safety Authority (HSA) into the accident was also conducted as it involved a work situation. The HSA, which has prosecuting powers separate to the garda, said on Friday it had concluded investigations and it will not be bringing charges. "What occurred was “essentially a road traffic accident,” a spokesman said. The HSA would not be making any recommendations arising from the investigations. The Gap of Dunloe road is public and it comes under the remit of Kerry County Council. The council said it will await the outcome of the coroner's court.

Charity Night at the Dogs to fight wind turbine plans Kerry football star Paul Murphy launched the Sliabh Luachra Wind Aware Group 'Night at the Dogs' which will take place at The Kingdom Greyhound Stadium in Tralee on Saturday, February 23. Proceeds from this event will go towards the next stage in a fundraising campaign to pursue a High Court action against the granting of 12 monster wind turbines in the Gneeveguilla and Ballydesmond area. The first stage of the fundraising campaign was to raise €12,000 in the space of 10 days to engage a legal team. A GoFundMe page was set up and with huge community support - this was achieved within the time scale. “These turbines will be higher than the Spire in Dublin and St Mary's Cathedral, Killarney,” Fred O’Sullivan, Chair of the Sliabh Luachra Wind Aware Group, said. “Some of these turbines will also be less than 500 metres from the homes of local residents and will have a huge effect

on health and wellbeing, not to mention decimating the environment.” Sliabh Luachra is a haven for the Hen Harrier and Pearl Water Mussel as well as one of the most important wintering ground for raptors, he added. “We fully support pro green energy, but wind turbines should be located responsibly. We are doing this for the future generations.”

Sliabh Luachra Wind Aware would like to thank everyone for their support and to join us on our Night at the Dogs for a fantastic night, he added.
Tickets are €10 each and available from Fred O'Sullivan 0876797474, Shaun O'Rourke 0872116185 and Fiona Fleming 0873896655.

“Assaults on hospital staff not acceptable” - TD Assaults on staff in University Hospital Kerry are not acceptable, according to TD Michael Healy-Rae, who recently raised the issue with the Minister for Health. He said that a serious number of assaults on staff have taken place inside the hospital and that users of the hospital, and the people working within it, is of paramount importance. “I raised with the Minister for Health the

issue of University Hospital Kerry and the serious number of assaults on the staff in the hospital,” Mr Healy-Rae said. “As everybody knows, in the past there were only security staff at the entrance to the A&E department. This was not acceptable as a number of serious assaults have taken place inside in the actual A&E itself where time was of essence in intervening and trying to be of assistance to people who were been assaulted. “At present the Minister stated that UHK

has currently two security officers on duty 24 hours a day seven days a week to cover the whole hospital site.” He stated that from November 2018, UHK has rostered an additional eight hours of security officers from 6pm to 2am daily, and these hours are directly based within the emergency department. “They have also, following on from my representations, undertaken a security audit and are awaiting recommenda-

tions from this. “The hospital have also engaged proactively with an Garda Síochana locally and regular meetings are now taking place. The local Hospital Watch Committee has also been restarted. “The protection of the users of the hospital and the people working within it is of paramount importance to all of us, and I am adamant that a safer environment would be created within UHK in the best interest of all.”

Columnist ANNE LUCEY gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry and beyond

Nurses seem to have captured a general feeling of deep dissatisfaction

Are our striking nurses the Irish version of the French Gilet Jaunes and have they captured the general ‘malaise’? No one knows what the nurses actually want and as with the French yellow jackets, they are not too specific. But with the yellow vests and the French public mood, the blue vested nurses seem to have captured a general feeling of deep dissatisfaction. It is a mood that has been ignored by politicians and senior civil and public servants. And, as with the French, it has burst on the scene. Polls show almost 70 percent support for the nurses’ strike. Even concerns about the timing before Brexit is not blunting it. The nurses did not cause Brexit and the health service has been under terrible strain with almost two decades is the consensus. I have followed the strike on social media with comments such as ‘everything but the kitchen sink’ underlies the ‘bualadh bos’, tea and honking horns for the marching nurses. It seems to stem from rage: rage over the attempt by the Government to turn down €13 billion Apple tax; the scandalous cost of the National Children’s Hospital and its location, the lack of housing, the way the bankers were supported even though they broke the country, the way a lot of the developers and big borrowers

seem to have protected themselves; that the Government caved into the guards and awarded increases; the high salaries TDs, Senators and Ministers pay themselves, and their decision to hike their pay in the throes of the strike by front line workers. In short, everything, maybe even the kitchen sink, is shoring up support for this strike, quite apart from the nurses. Yet I think there are a few long-trunked elephants in the chambers of the INMO arguments. They say nurses will not leave after graduation if they are paid more. Again, we don’t know how much of an increase the INMO actually seeks. In any case, and research shows, young nurses are not leaving the Irish system because of pay. They are leaving largely because the Irish university and training system allows them to. It gives them a qualification that is a passport to travel to sunny places and does not demand of them to stay to pay the State back for their very expensive training. Young people these days travel. Nurses are no different. There is a simple solution to this: a stipulation that both nurses and doctors must work in the Irish health

system for three to four years on graduation. I can’t understand why the GPs are diluting the focus on the nurses by holding their own high profile protest smack in the middle of it. There is another aspect which this strike is throwing up: younger nurses and their suitability for the profession. I find some of the personal stories actually worrying. What comes across is some young nurses can’t seem to handle the stress of the profession. All jobs are stressful and everyone takes stress home and the young entrants can’t seem to get this. They have this idea that everything is better elsewhere! The innocence of it is shocking. Nursing is a tough job. It demands character, as well as empathy. We have ditched the interview system for a paper based points system. How can you tell character suitability

FF and SF - will they eat each other up? Meanwhile back at the ranch, the cosiness of Fianna Fail with Sinn Fein is almost shameless now. I see it at local level in the Council already. There is great cooperation and support for each other’s motions and all round patting on the back. The real public throat cutting is between Sinn Fein and Fine Gael. For a time there was a detente, with the Shinners believing they would get a look in from the blue shirts. And the blue shirts waited like crocodiles in case they needed the shin guard. That is all over now and I am gob-

smacked by the open and common parlance of SF and FF. It goes way beyond personal friendships. There has even been a sharing of advice on certain motions and background strategies at Kerry County Council - I am reliably informed. If I know anything about the Shinners - they follow orders, and the order for cooperation must be from up high. Mary Lou McDonald comes from a FF background, was a party member, and was once spoken of as an FF candidate. All she really did was exchange and F for and S! And she is not doing as well as expected.

The presidential race was a disaster for her. It opened a crack in the party few of us suspected. The shine has come off the Shinners. She has failed to build on her natural advantages - she needs friends. The parties are natural allies when it comes to the historic brandishing of rusty rifles, so to speak. Fianna Fail too are down on their luck and have made equally stupid political decisions in the presidential race. Kenmare Senator Mark Daly already ticks all the Sinn Fein boxes from support for Palestine (right down to the appalling SF led error to boycott

from Leaving Cert grades? I wonder if our very cosseted, protected and academically bright young people - I hesitate to use the term snowflake generation - are tough enough for it? Maybe it's time to bring back the interviews. By the way, I find the Fianna Fail support stance on the nurses cringe inducing. Micheál Martin was one of the worst Ministers for Health this country ever had. He has got away with his tenure in health because of his dislike of fags. But he was completely overawed by the medics. I saw it first-hand. And because he felt so out of his depth, he made no decisions. It was Micheál Martin who set up the rudderless monster that is the HSE. So the mouthing by FF politicians, local and national in support of the nurses when they had a perfect opportunity to improve the system, leaves me cold. Israel) to the protection of the Fianna Fail national anthem, the 1916 fight for freedom and flag waving, and all that auld out-dated 19th century nationalism - we all know that. Now FF TD Billy Kelleher is out asking for dialogue with Sinn Fein, saying the big difference is FF have travelled longer on the ballot box path, away from the armalite. He calls it democracy. Is this because Billy is hoping for Liadh Ni Riada’s ‘Number Two’ in his ambitions to run for Europe? Or is he trying to upstage the poppy wearing gal from Ballyvourney and snatch her ‘Number One’ votes? The real question is, will it be FF or SF who will hang when the parties finally tie the knot?

Submissions sought for Lewis Road and Kilcummin Road Junction

Another campaign the Killarney Advertiser ran two years ago is finally moving forward – as submissions are invited for plans on the N22 Lewis Road and Kilcummin Road Junction Upgrade. Loss of life and many serious accidents have occurred on the busy road, which sees over 18,500 vehicles pass through every day. Yesterday (Thursday), the Part 8 proposal went on display in Killarney MD Office, County Buildings and Kerry NRDO as well as on the Kerry County Council website – with a deadline of Thursday, March 21. On completion of this process, the land acquisition process for the necessary lands will be commenced and it is hoped to have the lands acquired and to have the Construct Contract procured by the end of 2019 - with the works being car-

‘God has no Country’ 100th show at the INEC Acoustic Club A one man show which recounts the endeavours of Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty, who saved over 6,500 people in Rome during World War II, will take place in the INEC, on February 14. It will be the 100th performance of Donal’s Courtney’s play which tells the story of Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty’s war time exploits in Rome. Known as the Scarlett Pimpernel, Mons O'Flaherty has been the subject of many books and movies about his life. The play focuses on O’Flaherty’s struggles as he and his colleagues set about the task of protecting those in need from the German occupancy of Rome. The story is told from the Monsignor’s point of view, Donal explained. “It is study of the torment and difficulty in the decisions he undertook in his fight for justice. This is re-enacted through the use of storytelling and various characterisations.” The play is a dramatisation of actual events, and while careful research has been carried out in its creation, as a dramatic work certain licence has been taken, he added. Following on from a series of national and international dates including Wesport, Singapore, Malta and North America, it returns to Donal’s hometown Killarney on February 14. Tickets are on sale from www.inec.ie or 064 6671555. For more information please contact Ceara Scanlon on ceara.scanlon@inec. ie or 064 6671555.

Kerry comes out tops when it comes to tourism awards The county has picked up a number of prestigious tourism awards throughout the month of January.

Una O'Leary is organising the second annual 'Brendan O'Leary Memorial Fun Walk' on Sunday February 17.

Second annual walk to remember popular Kilcummin man

Several hotels and guesthouses across the county came tops in various awards including the Trip Advisor Travellers’ Choice Awards 2019. Kerry was also represented at the finals of the Irish Tourism Industry Federation Awards. These awards give recognition to and promote people, companies and organisations – overseas and at home – that have made significant contributions to developing, marketing, selling and delivering improved visitor experiences in Ireland and to increasing the number of visitors from overseas. Kerry County Council was a finalist in the Best International Marketing Initiative

category. Parknasilla Resort & Spa was a finalist in the Best Wild Atlantic Way Tourism Experience category, and the overall winner of The Best Innovative Place to Stay went to The Gleneagle Group for their Accessibility Strategy. “These awards are all the more special because readers voted with their feet, literally,” Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr Norma Foley, said. “Our beautiful and amazing county is where they chose to spend their holidays and the destination they would recommend to a friend. These awards are testament to the wonderful work being done by everybody in the industry to promote what Kerry has to offer to visitors and has focussed the spotlight on Kerry as a premier tourist destination.”

Popular Kilcummin man Brendan O’Leary, who passed away in 2012, is to be remembered next week at a memorial fundraising walk. Plans are in place for the second annual 'Brendan O'Leary Memorial Fun Walk', which takes place on Sunday, February 17. Una O’Leary, Brendan’s widow, is planning the event to help raise funds for the Palliative Care Unit at University Hospital Kerry. The 5k walk will begin from Una’s yard at Lyreatough, Kilcummin at 2pm, with €10 registration at 1.30pm. Brendan was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer in 2012 and passed away 18 months later on February 18, aged just 42. “This walk keeps me going,” Una told the Killarney Advertiser this week. “Last year we raised €3,500 and we hope to raise a substantial amount again this year. I’m hoping this year will be bigger and better. It’s a nice day out

for family, friends and neighbours to remember Brendan.” She explained that Brendan, a farmer and an agricultural contractor, had no symptoms, just a sudden pain in his back. “He had no symptoms at all, that’s the most frightening part. He had a pain in his back that wouldn’t go away and was then diagnosed. For someone his age it was rare.” She said the walks are her way of giving something back to those who helped during his illness. “The care he got in Tralee was absolutely brilliant. When he went into palliative care Dr Sheehan and staff couldn’t do enough. If the funds help someone or help pay the debt of the Palliative Care Unit – then why not?”

Site investigation works planned for Listry bridge €200,000 has been allocated for site investigation and design works on the notorious Listry Bridge. The funds were allocated to Kerry County Council by the Dept of Transport to proceed with plans for a new bridge at Listry, on the R563. This is following the Council making an appraisal application to the Department in July 2018 with a preliminary design. “This allocation is to be welcomed but we must not get carried away,” Cllr Brendan Cronin, told the Killarney Ad-

vertiser this week. “This is an important step forward, but what the R563 road users and people of Listry want to hear is that funding is in place and contract documents have been signed for the construction of a new bridge. “That is the ultimate goal and only then will we see real improvements. I have been 20 years in Kerry County Council, highlighting, working and campaigning at every opportunity for a new two lane bridge for Listry, and will continue until it is achieved.”

Kerry has been picking up a number of prestigious tourism awards throughout the month of January. Pictured were: Moira Murrell (CEO KCC), Cllr Norma Foley (Cathaoirleach KCC), Niamh O’Shea (Chairperson, Kerry Irish Hotels Federation) and many who are involved in tourism businesses in Kerry.

Publican sparks unique bus fundraising idea A publican donated €500 to charity this week - after his customers passed up a free Christmas drink. Declan Falvey from Falvey’s Bar Killorglin presented a cheque of €500 on Friday, to Agnes Rooney from Buy a Bus Campaign, at The Kerry Parents and Friends Association, Killarney. And the move has sparked a unique fundraising idea for the charity. Now Agnes Rooney, plans to ask pubs, hotels, and cafes throughout the county to get involved in a similar campaign later this year. “It’s a unique idea,” Agnes, who started the original Buy a Bus campaign, said. “Declan phoned me with the idea as the bus passes his door twice a day. I just thought I would expand on it. I’m going to go to every town and talk to businesses to see if we can take this countywide. I’m going to target pubs, hotels and cafes and ask them to kindly come on board.” Since setting up three years ago

the Buy a Bus campaign has raised €350,000, replacing six busses countywide for Kerry Parents and Friends. And they’ve plans to replace another three next month.

NEWS BRIEFS... Cllr Cronin welcomes speed limit review Cllr Brendan Cronin is welcoming two very important changes as part of Kerry County Council's speed limit review. In the review it has been agreed within the Killarney MD that a 50km speed limit will be put in place on all approaches to schools which are located on all local county roads, and it is proposed that this be implemented countywide. "This will be a very important step for Boards of Management and school principals who have been seeking improvements in awareness and road safety for traffic, pedestrians and children approaching and accessing schools on local county roads,” Cllr Cronin said. "Also agreed as part of the review is the implementation of a 30km speed limit within all residential developments and estates that have been taken in charge by the Council where the road is public. This is also an important safety measure for residential areas." ..............................................................

What would normally have been a quiet winter’s night has proved to be a sell-out success as over 120 diners enjoyed a ‘Taste of Aghadoe’, on Friday night. The renowned five star Aghadoe Heights Hotel and Spa created a bit of a stir on the Killarney food scene as diners arrived to the award-winning Lake Room Restaurant for a beautifully presented and relaxing dining experience.

Guests were treated to a beautiful three course dinner and piano entertainment at a fabulous price point of €30 per person. The concept was born from the hugely successful ‘Dine in Killarney’ evenings offered on the Christmas in Killarney programme. “We felt that there was an opportunity to invite our local customers up to the hotel and showcase what our restaurant has to offer, while still being mindful of the val-

What better way to spend a Friday night than being wined and dined in the comfort of the hotel.” Book now for the next ‘Taste of Aghadoe’, which will be run on Friday March 1. Numbers are limited and the hotel anticipates another full house, she added.

Rathmore student nominated for major volunteer award | By Molly Rowe

A kind-hearted student from Rathmore could be named All-Ireland Youth Volunteer of the Year. Elaine Nagle, who attends Scoil Phobail Sliabh Luachra, has been recognised for her exemplary volunteer work carried out in her local community after being announced as one of 20 finalists in the Pramerica 2019 Spirit of Community Awards (SOC). The Kerry native was nominated for her volunteer efforts in the Rathmore Social Active Group (SAG) where she fundraised for the local day care, organised events for the elderly in the local community and assisted with the Chernobyl children’s outings. Elaine is also a recipient of the West Cork Garda Youth Awards. The Pramerica Spirit of the Community Awards recognises and rewards post-primary/secondary level students for vol-

unteer work carried out in their communities through this exciting initiative, which provides recognition and rewards to finalists. This programme was launched on an all-Ireland basis in 2006, and since then, has honoured more than 2,500 outstanding volunteers from over 300 schools across Ireland. “Everyone here in Scoil Phobail Sliabh Luachra are delighted that Elaine is one of the recipients of the Pramerica Award and indeed she is most worthy of it,” school principal Denis Kerins told the Killarney Advertiser this week. “Elaine is a role model for students in our school and has been involved in volunteering for many years. We wish Elaine

well and look forward to the celebrating with her and her family on March 28.” The 20 students will be presented with €500 and an engraved silver medallion at the awards ceremony in the Aviva Stadium in Dublin. The top two Junior Honourees will also receive an additional €500 for their chosen charity, and two of the 20 students will be named All-Ireland Youth Volunteers of the Year. These two awardees will receive €1,000, a gold medallion, a crystal trophy for their school and an all-expense paid trip to the United States in May to participate in the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards ceremony.

Visual artists of all ages, media, and styles - from students to street artists – are this week being encouraged to apply to K-FEST 2K19. K-FEST, a dynamic arts festival with an emphasis on emerging artists, uses unoccupied spaces in Killorglin, transforming vacant retail outlets, deserted buildings, and even domestic homes into curated bespoke pop-up galleries and venues over the June Bank Holiday weekend. In its seventh consecutive year, K-FEST will once again take over the town of Killorglin, exhibiting approximately 100 visual artists across all disciplines, including paint, print, sculpture, performance, textiles, fashion, graphic design, photography, film, and audio-visual. Over the course of the June Bank Holiday weekend, K-FEST hosts more than 60 events in addition to a gallery trail, including live music performances by dozens of bands and musicians, as well as spoken word, drama, comedy, short films, street entertainment, and activities for kids and families, all culminating with the ‘Screaming Pope Prize’ ceremony, in which the festival awards a single outstanding work of visual art.

“In 2018, we saw a performance piece win the ‘Screaming Pope Prize’, and we generally had more performance art on exhibit, moving K-FEST into the realm of a truly multi-discipline arts festival,” Neil Browne, Artistic Director, said. “I hope we continue to see as much varied work in 2019, as each work of art elicits a different experience and drives interactions between artists and attendees that really heighten the sense of community and inclusivity during the weekend. We may even see a new gallery or two pop up in 2019, which always gives the festival — and the works on display — a new flavour.” Visual arts submissions are now being accepted for K-FEST, which takes place on Friday, May 31, through Sunday, June 2. A submission form, which requires images of proposed artwork, photo of the artist, biography, and artist statement, among other items, may be found at www.kfest.ie. Submissions costs just €10 and are due at 6pm, Friday, March 8.

Elizabeth and Peggy Kelleher presented the proceeds to Christy Lehane, Chairman of Kerry Friends of Motor Neurone, at the Heights Hotel Killarney, on behalf of Ballinagree Vintage Club. The money was from the proceeds of both a family fun day and vintage car display held by Ballinagree Vintage Club on September 28 last. Peggy and Elizabeth Kelleher, who do a lot of fundraising for Motor Neurone Disease in memory of a family member who died of the dreadful disease had accepted this cheque on Saturday night January 12, from the Officers and Committee members of the Club the Lane Bar in Ballinagree. On behalf of Kerry Friends of Motor Neurone both the Kelleher family and Christy Lehane thanked most sincerely the Ballinagree Vintage Club for this huge fundraising cheque to Kerry

Friends Motor Neurone. Christy Lehane stated this money will go towards funding the wages of Specialist Motor Neurone Disease nurses and the provision of specialist medical equipment thus enabling Motor Neurone sufferers to spend the end of life in the comfort and dignity of their own homes. “We are so grateful for receiving this huge cheque as fundraising is never easy to do but is very necessary, and also the fact that 86 percent of the annual income of the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association still relies on fundraising,” Christy said. “Thanks to Vintage Club Officers Flor O’Driscoll, Helen Spillane, Rita O’Sullivan and committee for selecting Motor Neurone Disease as one of their charities for their fun day and vintage car display last September.”

Kilgarvan water supply no longer a risk to customers 785 customers in Kerry have been removed from the EPA’s Remedial Action List following the completion of upgrade work on the water treatment plant in Kilgarvan. This €0.5 million investment in the Kilgarvan water treatment plant involved the provision of a 500m3 reservoir and the installation of in-tank aeration, thereby addressing issues with trihalomethanes (THMs) in the supply. The EPA’s Remedial Action List, or RAL, is the list of ‘at risk’ water supplies. The Kilgarvan supply was on the RAL due to elevated levels of trihalomethanes (THMs). “Irish Water has a prioritised programme of investment for all schemes on the RAL,” Ian O’Mahony, Irish Water’s Water Lead for Kerry, said. “The current updated RAL shows a reduction from 11 to three schemes in Kerry which is a reflection of the pro-

gress we are making. “Upgrade works on the remaining three – the Caherdaniel, Castlecove and Caragh Lake - water treatment plants is currently underway. These upgrades should facilitate the removal of these schemes from the RAL.” Irish Water has put in place the first national THM plan and a prioritised programme of investment to address all inadequacies in drinking water parameters including THMs. By 2021, the utility plans to reduce the number of schemes on the RAL to zero with an investment of €327 million in upgrading water supplies at risk from THMs. “As a single utility, Irish Water can take a comprehensive look at the overall performance of Ireland’s drinking water production plants for the first time so that when the most serious problems are identified, projects and budgets can be prioritised.”

Theresa enjoys her special birthday celebration

Saturday night was a very special occasion for one local lady as she celebrated her 70th birthday in style with family and friends.

out&about

Theresa Kelly, Aughacureen, Fossa, officially turned 70 on Monday this week (February 4), but had an early party in The Dromhall Hotel, Killarney, with her close family, neighbours and friends. She was joined on the night by her daughter Mairead, Mairead’s husband Michael Power and their children Cora (24) and Micaela (18). Theresa’s sons Tadhg and Shane were also there to help her celebrate, as well as Tadgh’s wife Neasa and their daughter Ava who’s

almost one, and Shane’s wife Orla and their children Alex (9) and Cliona (6). Theresa was delighted to be joined by her two sisters Eileen and Marie and brother Sylvester, who travelled down from Dublin for her special day. To start the night off, 24 enjoyed a sit down meal and 20 more came for the celebrations afterwards. She was very happy to have her nieces and nephews there too, as well as the O’Connell, Lesley, Murphy and Weldon

families. Theresa is originally from Killorglin but moved to Fossa years ago when she married her husband John Kelly. Sadly, he has since passed away. In her younger days she worked as a hairdresser but gave it up to stay at home and rear her children. Nowadays she loves being at home surrounded by her family and her companion ‘Penny’

the pug. And her son Shane said this week that Theresa didn’t mind turning 70. “She didn’t mind it at all,” Shane told the Killarney Advertiser. “We had a sit down meal and the food was top class. It was a great night. We took family photos beforehand and she enjoyed catching up with her family and friends.”

GARDEN MAGIC

Gardening - By Debby Looney

Debby is available for advice and garden consultations, just call 086 6088156 or email barnhillky@gmail.com

Have your garden burst with colour... by picking the right plants Even though it still feels like winter, especially after the cold snap last week, the garden is bursting with colour… if the right plants are in it! Bulbs are the obvious splashes of colour, with snowdrops showing, and Daffodils are making a very early and unusual appearance this year. Bluebells and muscari are about to flower, with crocus quick to follow. Tulips are a bit later, along with Alliums and hyacinth. If you did not put down bulbs in autumn, September or October, then do not despair! There are lots of bulbs available potted up, and these will come back year after year. In my opinion, every garden should have at least a few of the following plants. At the front of any border, there should be a (few) Pulmonaria. Growing only to about 20cm, they start to flower in February, and continue right through March. The brightest blue, ‘Blue Ensign’, an uplifting pink ‘Raspberry Splash’ and a deep purple, aptly named ‘Dark Vader’, are among my favourites. Their foliage is also very pretty, with silvery splotches on a dark green leaf. There are heathers which continue to flower throughout the spring, and of particular interest are those heathers which have brightly coloured new foliage, such as ‘Spring Torch’. Eranthis hyemalis, or winter aconite, is a pretty yellow flower, which happily naturalises under trees. The epithet ‘hyemalis’ means winter-flowering, and indeed, this plant flowers during the coldest months. Forsythia is a common shrub, flowering

yellow before the leaves appear. I am not a great fan of the large varieties, but recently a dwarf variety has appeared on the market called ‘Sugar Baby’ which stays small and is very pretty tucked away in a border. Daphne odora is another plant no garden should be without, its flowers are purple which are strongly scented. Hamamelis, or Witch Hazel, is also an early flowering plant, its flowers are shades of yellow to auburn, and are spidery. They are also strongly scented. Flowering currants are also a bright and cheerful addition to any garden, their pungent scent and dazzling colour really awaken the senses! There are several flowering cherries which blossom very early, such as Prunus ‘The Bride’, which has single white flowers with pretty red anthers which contrast beautifully with the petals. Catkins cannot and should not be forgotten about at this time of year, the black stemmed willow, Salix nigricans, has silver catkins which shimmer in the sunshine, and Salix Mount Aso which has very large fluffy pink catkins. Hazels, or Corylus, have long yellow tassels which bring cheer even on the darkest day!

Gucci removes $890 sweater from stores after racist complaints

Woman shocked as she picks up mountain lion instead of pet dog! An American woman got the shock of her life when she broke up a dog fight – only to discover one was a mountain lion. The woman, who hasn't been named, was intervening in the fight outside her home in the small town of Mackay, Idaho and was lucky enough to only escape with a couple of scratches. The woman had picked up what she thought was her pet during the altercation – only to discover it was in fact a

Gucci has this week apologised and pulled their $890 sweaters from its stores and online sites after a backlash from customers. The wool sweater polo-neck ‘balaclava’ style sweater, which is part of the autumn/winter 2018 collection, covers the bottom half of the face and has a cut out mouth with large red lips – resembling blackface make-up, customers complained. It was the latest case of an Italian fashion house having to apologise for cultural or racial insensitivity. In a statement posted on Twitter on Wednesday night, the company said: “Gucci deeply apologises for the offense caused by the wool balaclava jumper. We consider diversity to be a fundamental value to be fully upheld, respected, and at the forefront of every decision we make.”

third incident of a mountain lion – which are also known as a cougar or a puma – attacking a dog in January. Earlier this week, officials in Colorado revealed a man was attacked by a mountain lion while out running. Remarkably, the man fought back and managed to choke the animal with his bare hands.

Trump must disclose his tax returns Democrats held their first hearing yesterday (Thursday) on the importance of presidents disclosing their tax returns. Trump, during his 2016 campaign, defied decades of precedent by not releasing his personal returns, fuelling questions about how his financial interests could impact his decisions as President. The hearing, before a House Ways and Means subcommittee panel, focused on a provision in the Democrats' sweeping ethics reform legislation that requires future presiden-

tial candidates and the President to release 10 years of tax returns. Democrats hope that the hearing will help build their case for why the American people need to see Trump's tax returns. The chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee said he plans to request Trump's returns using IRS code 6103, a provision that Democrats say allows the chairman of the House Ways and Means committee to request Trump's tax returns. The law states that the chairmen of the Senate Finance Committee and House Ways and Means committee each have the

power to request taxpayer information and states that ‘the secretary shall furnish such committee with any return or return information specified in such request’. However, the fight over Trump's returns is just beginning. Trump's lawyer Rudy Giuliani has made it clear that the President intends to fight any request in court. "Treasury could slow-walk this entire process," a former senior IRS official told CNN last week. "There is nothing in the statute that specifies when the agency must comply with the request."

Irish adults fear health issues due to drinking The Drinkaware Index found that one in four Irish adults consider it likely that they will experience health problems in the future, if they continue drinking at their current level.

University Hospital Kerry wants you to have your say University Hospital Kerry is conducting a survey to ask, listen to and hear public opinion on the hospital and its services from the people of Kerry. The survey is part of an overall process to develop and promote communications with all of the hospital’s stakeholders, including patients, relatives, general public, GPs, healthcare professionals, other institutions and prospective healthcare professional candidates, as well as to ensure the hospital is authentically reflected in all of its endeavours. The findings of the survey will assist the hospital in understanding perceptions and challenges so that it can work to develop and promote UHK as a progressive, professional and essential asset to

Kerry. The hospital anticipates that the outcomes arising through this overall process, will lead to, and help to instil a sense of pride in current staff, thus helping with staff retention and attracting new healthcare professionals to University Hospital Kerry. UHK are strongly encouraging people to respond to the series of questions in this survey openly and honestly so that the hospital gets an accurate gauge and understanding of where the hospital is positioned in the minds and hearts of its population. The survey is available online at http://www.uhksurvey.com/.

No host at this year’s Oscars For the first time in 30 years the Oscars - the biggest night in Hollywood - will have no host. Producers of the 91st Academy Awards which takes place on February 24, are planning a new format, with a selection of Hollywood A-listers introducing various segments. Actor and comedian Kevin Hart, who was due to host this year’s Oscars, pulled out in December following a backlash on social media over homophobic tweets he made several years ago. The host-less Oscars was a decision that everyone involved got on board with fairly quickly after Kevin Hart withdrew in December, Karey Burke said, who’s been in the top ABC entertainment job just two months. The ceremony also has box-office hits — best-picture contenders ‘Black Panther’, ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ and ‘A Star Is Born’ — which could boost TV viewership.

To mark World Cancer Day 2019, Drinkaware is encouraging people to get the facts on the low-risk alcohol guidelines to understand their drinking habits and make small changes to help reduce their cancer risk. The link between alcohol and cancer is well established. In Ireland, the HSE National Cancer Control Programme state that each year 900 people are diagnosed with alcohol-related cancers and roughly 500 die as a result. Drinkaware are reminding people that the low-risk alcohol guidelines are: • 11 standard drinks (110g pure alcohol) spread out over the week for women • 17 standard drinks (170g pure alcohol) spread out over the week for men • Allow for at least two alcohol-free days in the week. Drinking above these guidelines and in particular, binge drinking - six or more standard drinks in one sitting - further increases the risks associated with alcohol. “While there are many different factors that can contribute to the development of cancer, there are some actions we can all take to reduce our own and our family's cancer risk,” Drinkaware CEO, Sheena Horgan, said. “One proactive and positive step is to drink less alcohol. However, awareness

Report abuse concerns to HSE Safeguarding Teams Just two percent of safeguarding concerns reported to the HSE are made directly by those who may have been abused - with almost all concerns reported by third parties.

Last year’s show drew a record-low 26.5 million people, a 20 percent drop from the 2017 show and the first time Oscar viewership dipped below 30 million, according to Nielsen records that go back to 1974. Burke also lauded the movie academy’s pledge to keep the ceremony to three hours, avoiding the overtime that can drain off viewers.

of the HSE low-risk alcohol guidelines is just two percent of the population – according to the Drinkaware Index. Without this information, it’s hard to appreciate what misuse is or how at risk you may be. What is clear, and what we’re seeing firsthand at Drinkaware, is that people genuinely want a better understanding of their consumption of alcohol, so it’s important that they are enabled to do so. We are particularly encouraged that in January alone, almost 44,000 used our online Drinks Calculator to find out the impact of their drinking habits. This is a great first step to changing behaviours and improving health and wellbeing.”

Safeguarding Ireland is encouraging more people to self-report - if they believe they are experiencing abuse. Safeguarding Ireland Chairperson Patricia Rickard Clarke said that almost all of the cases reported to the HSE are via staff and families – and she called on more adults to come forward and be empowered to report concerns themselves. “Those most at risk are vulnerable adults such as people who are living with dementia, a brain injury, a mental illness, a learning disability, a physical disability, or a frail older person. Though people may live with reduced

capacity – we would encourage them to report their concerns where possible.” Figures for 2017 reported to the HSE National Safeguarding Office showed 10,120 concerns regarding alleged abuse in Ireland with the most common type physical abuse at 37 percent, followed by psychological 29 percent, financial abuse 11 percent and sexual abuse nine percent. However, just two percent came directly from those affected. The HSE National Safeguarding Office is a member of Safeguarding Ireland and works closely with nine Safeguarding and Protection Teams across the country – to whom concerns about people’s protection can be reported. The www.safeguardingireland.org website includes contact details for each of the nine regionally based HSE Safeguarding and Protection Teams.

Gleneagle Hotel plans Wedding Consultation Day The talented events team at The Gleneagle Hotel are hosting a Wedding Consultation Day this Sunday, February 10.

Toning tables are suitable for all ages

Couples are invited to visit the hotel, meet with the team and view the banqueting suite on the day from 2pm to 5pm. So much more than just a hotel, The Gleneagle creates and delivers some of the most exceptional events in the country. So, what happens when their events

team applies their experience and knowhow to a wedding celebration? “We love nothing more than devoting our vast expertise to a Gleneagle Wedding,” General Manager, John Dolan explained. “We have welcomed rock stars, presidents and taoisigh but no one makes us smile the way a Gleneagle couple does. Whether you wish to celebrate your big day with a classic Gleneagle wedding or go for something completely different, we can make your dream a reality.”

Whether you’re 18 to 85, male or female - toning tables are great - especially for increasing energy and mobility levels and trimming your waistline. Our Pilate based toning tables are suitable for all ages, fitness levels, shapes and sizes. You can go at your own pace and as you improve we can change the routine to suit your ability. Our oldest client using the tables is 85 years-old and constantly reminds us they are keeping her going, her posture is improved, energy levels are higher than most of her peers, and she has improved mobility. She wasn’t great at going up and down the stairs, but now feels much more confident and has great balance. By introducing a gentle form of exercise, not only is it good for reducing your waistline but also increasing energy and mobility. A lot of people are doing different forms of exercise but don’t give much time to stretching, the toning tables are a great platform for enabling every muscle in the body get a great stretch, all the while engaging the core stability. The core is always the hardest area to work. A lot of us suffer with back complaints and it’s not so easy or inviting to do sit-ups. While doing a session on the toning ta-

bles, you are working the core throughout the session. It’s a 30 minute workout, and you can attend the times that suit you, but we do recommend to try to make it at least two times a week for best results. I have witnessed amazing changes in many different clients, especially those who put a good effort into watching their food intake. Toning tables do 20 percent of the work - you do the rest. A client that came and was finding it difficult to tie her bra, found after only a few sessions her range of movement had improved so much she was able to do those things that had been slowing down and getting her down. She felt she had loosened out so much and her energy was increasing, even her mood was improving. Exercise of any kind will not only improve your body shape but your mind set as well. We offer a free trial to see for yourself what they are all about. Try it, it’s never too late to start. For the month of February you will receive five extra sessions when you invest in a course of toning tables. Call Jill on 064-6632966

Twisted to sell 45 more 'new' Defenders Remember £7.5 million-worth of new Defenders bought by UK tuning company, Twisted before Land Rover ceased production in 2016?

Aston Martin teases Lagonda All-Terrain Concept The Vision Concept revealed at last year’s Geneva Motor Show, where Aston Martin heralded Lagonda as the world’s first luxury zero-emissions brand, now get ready to see the Lagonda All-Terrain Concept at this year’s Geneva this March. Designed to preview its first battery-powered production model in 2021, the Lagonda crossover concept shares its bold design theme with the Vision Concept — a huge four-door, four-seat fully autonomous pure-electric saloon that previewed both a production limousine and a large SUV from the long-dormant British brand. Aston Martin says that by taking advantage of its all-electric platform, Lagonda’s design team “created a car boasting extraordinary style and space

efficiency combined with a rakish design language that demonstrates the unique freedom afforded by Lagonda’s commitment to zero emission powertrain technologies”. Aston Martin has owned the once-iconic Lagonda brand since 1947, though it dates back to 1906. It built a limited run of Lagonda Taraf limousines over 2015-2016, before which the Lagonda badge was last seen on the wedgeshaped Aston Martin Lagonda sold between 1976 and 1989.

Well, the North Yorkshire firm has announced that 45 more of that once 240-car strong collection will be released for sale in its 'Remake History' range, which comes 18 months after the first batch of 'Classic Series I' cars were launched. This new lineup ought to stir even more excitement in Defender aficionados because it will include models which take their influence from the special Lightweight and Stage One V8. Details to be taken from the former, which was made famous by its use in the British army between 1968 and 1984, include a canvas roof, half height doors and a fold down screen. The V8's focus will be on luxury and power, as per the original, with each of these 15 cars using a GM 6.2-litre

eight-cylinder. Also available in the 2019 batch will be Classic Series IIA and Classic Series III-inspired models. Each of the 45 cars - all of which have remained unused and with only delivery mileage in a secret Yorkshire warehouse since 2016 - will cost from £80,400. Although given the enthusiasm of buyers in this market, the total value of optional parts fitted to each is likely to push that figure up by a decent margin.

Renault-Nissan to develop driverless taxis with Google The three-way alliance of Renault, Nissan and Mitsubishi Motors is planning a deal to work with Google's Waymo to jointly develop self-driving taxis. The three carmakers are finalising tieup negotiations with Waymo, a Google-affiliated developer of self-driving car technology. In September last year, the alliance decided to use a Google operating system for their cars' information systems, and the tech giant has already forged similar deals with Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and Jaguar Land Rover. Waymo already runs a self-driving car service in Phoenix, Arizona. Those tak-

ing part in the service can use a smartphone application to summon autonomous vehicles any time of day to get about in an area about 100 square miles at its maximum, according to Waymo chief John Krafcik. The firm last year announced it was adding as many as 62,000 Fiat Chrysler minivans to its autonomous fleet in an expanded collaboration announced by the companies.

2019 Skoda Kamiq previewed with new sketches Skoda has released new design sketches of its forthcoming Skoda Kamiq. The new images suggest the Skoda Kamiq will have the same split LED headlamp design as featured on the the Karoq and Kodiaq. The new images suggest the Skoda Kamiq will have the same split LED headlamp design as featured on the Karoq and Kodiaq. Unlike those two, the Skoda Kamiq positions its daytime running lamps above the main headlamps. Featuring a rakish rear C-pillar and a low roofline at the rear, the Kamiq gets neat angular C-shaped tail lamps and, even, a rear diffuser. That said, to truly picture the production Kamiq, you have to ignore the comically large rims, lack of door handles and slim-

line mirrors. But in any case, it looks like the small Skoda SUV is shaping up to be a formidable styling rival to the market. Beneath the skin it should also have what it takes to beat them. The production Kamiq is almost certain to share the small VW’s petrol-only small turbocharged range of 1.0-litre and 1.4-litre TSI engines. The Kamiq is also set to raise the bar for all future Skoda interiors, featuring a new virtual cockpit dash and a large centrally located infotainment system.

Toyota partners Panasonic for rapid electric car expansion Toyota has announced that it will combine forces with battery technology experts Panasonic to help it rapidly expand the number of pure-electric vehicles it makes. The new joint venture will see Toyota the dominant force in the partnership, owning a 51 percent part of the new battery manufacturing business with Panasonic. Building on an original deal struck between Panasonic and Toyota back in 2017, the new relationship is seen as one of the world’s largest car-makers making a move to control and protect the source of lithium-ion cells for all its future pure-electric cars.

As part of the new arrangement, the two companies will pool existing battery-related technology from 2020, basing manufacturing equipment and engineers at facilities in Japan and China.

O’DONOGHUE

CRONIN

In loving memory of Jimmy O’Donoghue, Gortdromakerrie Muckross Killarney, Who died on 20th February 2010. R.I.P.

In loving memory of Aidan Cronin, Knockmanagh, Killarney, Who died on the 8th February 2003.

I came across a picture of you and me today, The tears just started falling, But I couldn’t turn away, I closed my eyes and we were there, That day so long ago. I saw your eye’s still shining bright alive and still a glow, I swear I heard your laughter as I gazed up at your face, That golden and contagious sound that nothing can replace, It brought back some sweet memories of how life used to be, Each picture is now a time machine, that brings you back to me.

Wonderful memories woven in gold, This is a picture we tenderly hold, Deep in our hearts your memory is kept, To love, to cherish, never forget.

BREEN

In loving memory of Noreen Casey (Nee O’Riordain), Late of Ballinillane, Ballyhar & Muckross Grove, Killarney. Who died on the 13th February, 2019. On the first Anniversary of our Mam’s death, we, her daughters Sheila, Joan (Culligan), Noreen ( O’Sullivan), Geraldine (O’Mahony), Eileen (Browne), Kay (Hegarty), sons in law, grandchildren and great grandchildren would like to extend our sincere thanks to all those who attended the Rosary, removal and burial, those who sent mass cards, perpetual enrolments, letters of sympathy and floral tributes. To those who travelled long distances to attend, your support and kindness were much appreciated. A special word of thanks to Fr. Niall Howard for his support and compassion and also for his celebration of her funeral mass. Gratitude is also extended to Fr. Tadgh O’Doherty and Sacristan Bob O’Connor. Thanks to Helen Kerins and Denis Crowley for the beautiful music they provided at the mass. A special word of thanks to Noreen’s medical teams in CUH, KUH, and Killarney Community Hospital and to Dr. Domhnall Kavanagh and his team. The compassion, care and understanding they showed to Mam were fantastic and we will be forever grateful. Thanks to Anthony and all at O’Sullivan’s Pharmacy for their diligence and excellent service at all times. To Mam’s home care team, Eileen and Mary Theresa, we thank them for the loving care they showed to her during her illness. To our family friend, Helen - Mam really looked forward to her daily visit, and for that we are very grateful. She also looked forward to her weekly appointment with her hairdresser Geraldine Harrington who looked after Mam so well for so many years. To the neighbours in Muckross Grove, who visited often for a chat with the daily news and were great company to Mam, especially Nora (RIP) and Anne. To Mary and Michael O’Shea and the staff of O’Shea’s funeral home for their kindness and professionalism and the impeccable organisation of Mam’s funeral - thank you so much. To all of you mentioned and to the many that it is not possible to thank personally, please accept this acknowledgment as a token of our gratitude. A golden heart stopped beating; hardworking hands at rest, God broke our hearts to prove to us, he chose to take the best. It’s lonesome here without you; we miss you more each day. Life doesn’t seem the same, since you have gone away. The Holy Sacrifice of the mass will be offered for your intentions. Noreen’s anniversary mass will be held on Sunday 10th February at 10.00 am at the Church of the Sacred Heart, Ballyhar.

In loving memory of a Dear Husband and father Denis Breen, Late of Hazelwood Drive, Upper Park Road, Killarney, Who died on 10th February 2017. Doesn’t seem 2 years ago since you left us all. Your a step ahead of us all. It seems just like yesterday God above saw a cure wasn’t to be. He whispered come up to me. Your out of sight but not out of our minds. Part of us went with you the day God called you to his heavenly kingdom. We will never forget you. God now cares for you. You had always a smile to share, a laugh, a joke, a time to care for each of us. No one will take your place as you were one of the best on earth. Always a helping hand to us all and to others. Bright at night and thats your light, shining down to say goodnight to us all. It breaks our heart without you in our lives. But one day we will meet again when God calls us up and our family chain will link up again. Your missed by all of us. Sugar is sweet so were you. We are always at Friary masses and light candles for your god soul. We can not bring old days back. When were all together. The family chain is broken now but good memories of you live in our broken hearts. You could rest forever as your good deed’s are gone with you. Sadly missed but never forgotten by your heartbroken wife Sheila, Sons Mikey, Denis, Billy, Daughter Sheila Mary and Daughter in law Amy Breen. xxxxxxx 2nd Anniversary Mass will be held Saturday the 9th of February at 6.15pm in St.Mary’s Cathedral.

8.02.2019 14TH ANNIVERSARY FERRIS

In loving memory of a wonderful husband and father, Eugene Ferris, late of 34 O’Kellys Villas, Killarney, who died on the 7th February 2005. Just a prayer from the family that loved you, Just a memory fond and true, In our hearts you will live forever, Because we thought the world of you. Don’t remember me with sadness, Don’t remember me with tears, Remember all the laughter, We’ve shared throughout the years. Now I am contented, That my life it was worth while, Knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile, And when you feel the gentle breeze, Or the wind upon your face, That’s me giving you a great big hug, Or just a soft embrace. Sadly missed, loved and remembered everyday by your wife Mary, Son Richard, daughter-in-law Laura, granddaughter Molly & Hannah, Son-inlaw Mark, grandson Eugene. Time and years go gently by, But our love and memories never die, No longer in our lives to share, But in our hearts you are always there. Your memory is our keepsake, With which we’ll never part, God has you in his keeping, We have you in our heart,

Kerry can lay down a marker in Tralee | By Adam Moynihan NATIONAL LEAGUE: DIV 1

___________________________________________________________________________

Kerry v Dublin Saturday at 7pm Austin Stack Park

It had been billed as a baptism of fire but Peter Keane and his young squad remain unscathed. For now.

Up next for Kerry are the Dubs and the All-Ireland champions still represent the acid test as far as senior intercounty football is concerned. Kerry are flying high after two impressive (if unspectacular) wins in Division 1 of the National Football League but if any team is capable of bringing them back down to earth with a bang, it’s Jim Gavin’s Dublin. The Dubs bounced back from their opening day defeat to Monaghan by beating Galway with the kind of mind-numbing

efficiency that has become the hallmark of their ongoing reign of terror. Forward Cormac Costello impressed with five points from play but overall it was a dour affair as both sides deployed a blanket defence in front of just 14,502 people at Croke Park. Galway were the better team in the first half as the hosts appeared to be uncharacteristically going through the motions.

It even looked as though Dublin could be heading towards a second consecutive defeat for the first time in the Jim Gavin era (92 games over the course of six-anda-bit seasons), although, to be honest, it didn’t look that way for long. They eventually took the initiative in the second half and ran out comfortable 1-15 to 0-7 winners but coupled with the poor performance in Clones, that first half showing makes you wonder how seriously Gavin is taking this year’s league campaign. Monaghan were praised for making better use of the advanced mark and questions were raised about whether or not Dublin had worked on defending against teams who might want to exploit the controversial new regulation. Well, why would they? The rule isn’t going to be there for the championship so why should Gavin, or any manager for that matter, spend valuable contact time trying to coach his players on how to deal with it? Unless the league is more important to a team than the championship, the new rules shouldn’t be a major concern. With a historic five-in-a-row on the line, I doubt the Dublin manager is too fussed about the odd defeat, or poor 35 minutes, in the league. If you offered Gavin relegation plus an All-Ireland I’m sure he’d take it. Not that they’re going to get relegated. In fact, they’ll probably still win it regardless of what rules they follow. That being said, Saturday’s fixture against Kerry is sure to paint an interesting picture. Two workmanlike wins against Ulster opposition have left The Kingdom joint top of Division 1 but Dublin will be a major step-up, even if the visitors aren’t moving at full tilt just yet.

THE TEAMS

It might be a stretch to say that Keane is fighting with one hand behind his back but with David Clifford still recovering

2018 Footballer of the Year Brian Fenton will line out at midfield for Dublin.

SPORT

8.02.2019 from shoulder surgery, Kevin McCarthy in Dublin with Kilcummin and the Dr Crokes players unavailable for at least another week, the panel for Saturday’s game, which will be named later this evening, will not be full-strength. Shane Ryan and his defence have kept two clean sheets so few changes are expected in this department, although you would still expect Brian Kelly to get a look-in at some stage of the league. Mark Griffin is fit and he came off the bench to kick a point in Cavan but Keane and his selectors may opt to leave well enough alone. David Moran will probably come in and bolster Kerry’s midfield while Dara Moynihan and Tommy Walsh, both of whom came on last Sunday, are also in contention to start. Walsh was introduced at full-forward and although he wasn’t utilised to great effect against Cavan, he might be a good option against the Dubs. Even ignoring the offensive mark, which is made for strong, ball-winning forwards like Walsh, Kerry are lacking an out-andout target man in the inside line. Keane’s tactic so far has been to filter 13-14 players behind the ball and though it has worked to an extent, turning defence into attack has been a major problem. When Kerry break, they simply have no one to kick the ball into. I think Walsh or even Shane Ryan could be extremely effective at 14 if they got the right service but Keane may opt to persist with the tactics that have earned his side two wins in their opening two games. They will likely lean once again on the accurate kicking of Kenmare youngster Seán O’Shea, who has scored twothirds (18/27) of Kerry’s points in 2019. For Dublin, James McCarthy, who underwent knee surgery during the off-season, made his comeback against Galway last week and his return further strengthens a formidable-looking middle third. John Small, Brian Fenton, Michael Dara MacAuley, Brian Howard, Cormac Costello, Niall Scully and Con O’Callaghan are all in contention to start and with Dean Rock and Paul Mannion providing the firepower closer to goal, you can certainly see why the Dubs are favourites to prevail. One potential chink in Dublin’s armour is their full back line. They allowed two glaring goal-scoring opportunities in that opening period in Croker and if Galway had converted, the holders could have been in real bother. Paul Geaney and James O’Donoghue are two of the most prolific goal-getters in the country so this is one area where Kerry might have the upper hand. The latest instalment of the game’s greatest rivalry might not be too expansive but supporters can expect a full-blooded affair at the revamped Austin Stack Park in Tralee. Fans have been heartened by the workrate and attitude of Peter Keane’s team so far and if Kerry can continue in the same vein against Dublin, they could give the champs a right good rattle.

There’s no such thing as a handy All-Ireland | By Adam Moynihan

There’s no denying that Kerry clubs have fared well in the Intermediate and Junior Club Championships but the way some people talk, you’d swear that winning Kerry came with a free pass to Croke Park and a handy All-Ireland thrown in for good measure. Look, there’s no getting away from the fact that Kerry clubs hold an advantage over many of their counterparts at these particular grades. We only have eight senior clubs in this part of the world so the standard of our intermediate and junior clubs is naturally higher than it is elsewhere. For comparison, there are 19 club teams in the Cork SFC, 16 in the Dublin SFC and 16 in the Tyrone SFC. Intermediate and junior players can also line out in the Kerry SFC with divisional sides, which exposes non-senior players to a higher standard of play. Kilcummin, for instance, had seven or eight starters on the East Kerry team who reached the last four of the 2018 County Championship.

There’s a perception that Kerry have completely dominated these tournaments. That simply isn’t the case. Beaufort, meanwhile, operated in Division 1 of the County League last season and gave some senior clubs a run for their money, despite getting relegated. Asking intermediate and junior clubs from weaker footballing counties to compete with teams of this standard isn’t exactly right but at the same time it’s difficult to have a completely level playing field when it’s left to individual county boards to decide who is and who isn’t eligible for their competitions. Whatever the reasons behind it, Kerry clubs have fared well at national level in recent times and by this stage it seems as though people kind of turn their noses up at it. It’s almost as if everyone expects the Kerry team to go all the way, and if they do then it isn’t considered a huge deal. Well, the numbers tell a slightly different story. Of the 30 Kerry IFC and JFC champions

since the All-Ireland competitions were officially launched in 2004, only 13 have gone all the way. Granted, “only” is a problematic word in this instance. 13 out of 30 is a lot. But there is a perception, both locally and nationally, that Kerry have completely dominated the tournaments, and that simply isn’t the case. In the Intermediate, six different Kerry clubs have reached the final and

four have triumphed. St Mary’s, Milltown-Castlemaine, St Michael’s Foilmore and Ardfert (twice) all reached the promise land while Finuge and Spa were the unlucky two to fall agonisingly short. At Junior level, Kerry’s stranglehold has, admittedly, been more marked. 10 teams have made it to Dublin in 15 years and eight have ultimately climbed the steps in the Hogan Stand. So, statistically speaking, our junior champions have a 53% chance of winning an All-Ireland. You’d obviously take those odds any day of the week but the other side of that coin is that there have been plenty of clubs from the Kingdom whose Croke Park dreams have been cut prematurely

short. Yes, the Kerry champions have a great chance, but it’s certainly never a foregone conclusion. Kilcummin and Beaufort have fought their way through some very tight scrapes to make it all the way to their respective 2019 deciders and while they’re both favourites to get over the line, it won’t come easy. Hopefully everything goes to plan tomorrow and players, management and supporters will be basking in all of the glory that comes with an All-Ireland triumph. It will mean as much to them as any All-Ireland means to any club. And so it should.

8.02.2019 | By Eamonn Fitzgerald For so many years the senior club was the only avenue open to players and that is still there of course as Dr Crokes are in the All-Ireland Senior Club semi-final on February 16 when they play Mullinalaghta. Kilcummin man Kelly ensured that these finals would be played in Croke Park and you can’t get a greater incentive than that: stepping out on the hallowed ground in Croker. Beaufort mentors Éanna O’Malley, Garry McGrath and Fergus Kelly will be hoping to have a fully fit panel available for selection on this big day out as they come up against Connacht champions Easkey of Sligo. Easkey had a close call in the semi-final against Red Hugh of Donegal, eventually winning by two points (1-8 to 0-9). The crucial score in this game was the 44th minute goal scored by wing back James Lindsay when it seemed that the game was slipping away from. In fact, the Ulster men led from the start when they scored a point in the 27th second. All was going to plan until they conceded the goal. Beaufort had a close call too in their semi-final against Dundalk Young Irelands as they trailed for much of the game. They can thank Fergal Hallissey for keeping them in touch with frees: he scored six points (five frees) in their 0-12 to 0-10 win. Other key players in the Beaufort victory were midfielder Ronan Murphy, Liam Carey, Pádraig Doona and Ciarán Kennedy. More of the same from them tomorrow and the bonfires will blaze in Beaufort. It will also add to the great success rate by Kerry clubs. Beaufort are the 11th Kerry side to reach the decider since it was first played for in 2002. Kilcummin to cap great year It has been a great 12 months for Kilcummin. They had a blow-out defeat in the O’Donoghue Cup to Dr Crokes but they did very well in the County League, gaining promotion to Division 1. They also played some great football en route to victory in the Kerry IFC. I met Kilcummin captain Brendan Kealy recently and put it to him that his vast experience as goalkeeper with Kerry must be a great asset on his return to Croke Park. He said it was but pointed out that several other Kilcummin players have worn the Kerry jersey in various grades. These include Kevin McCarthy Seán O’Leary, Keith O’Leary, Kieran Murphy, Gary O’Leary and former minor Paul O’Shea. Those experiences should stand to them tomorrow. Kevin McCarthy will be unlikely to start as his hand injury has not fully cleared up. However, team manager Willie Maher himself a former Kerry senior star - will most likely use him at some stage as he is a key man in this Kilcummin team. He did make an appearance late in the semi-final and that proved a great boost as Kilcum-

min were clinging on for victory. Dan O’Leary and Kieran Fleming join Maher in the Kilcummin backroom team. Naomh Éanna, the Antrim champions who suffered so much during the Troubles in the North, were impressive in the Ulster final and also in the All-Ireland semi-final when they scored three goals. They won’t find it easy to get past Brendan Kealy and the Kilcummin defence where former Kerry minor and now Kerry U20 star Seán O’Leary is in splendid form. Not alone can he do his primary duty of defending but his up-field sallies turn defence into attack. He is so comfortable on the ball coming forward. O’Leary has good back-up in the Maher brothers, Donal and William. Another player I was very impressed by in the semi-final was Kieran Murphy. He really shone when Kevin Gorman was sent off. Corner forward Matt Keane was also very impressive in that game and is always good for a few points. Supporters should note that the Hogan Stand will be open for patrons and the Kilcummin game will be under lights with a 4.45pm throw-in. It’s a pity that it clashes with the Kerry v Dublin game, which starts at 7.30pm in Tralee.

Walkover raises some difficult questions about league's structure

Local basketball fans were left disappointed last Saturday when the National League game between Scotts Lakers and LYIT Donegal was postponed at the last minute. LYIT had reached out to the Lakers on Friday to ask if the fixture could be moved to an earlier time or a later date but the Killarney club were unable to offer an alternative. Basketball Ireland intervened and insisted that the game should go ahead but the Donegal side were unable drum up numbers and so the points were awarded to the Lakers. Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser, Lakers Team Manager John Brosnan said it was an “unfortunate” situation. “It’s disappointing but these things happen. We feel we’re in a very good place right now and would have loved the game, but we totally understand Donegal’s situation. At the end of the day, the basketball community is very small and the longer teams like ourselves and Donegal can compete at this level the better.”

WALKOVERS

Nobody likes to see walkovers. Generally speaking they’re a very poor reflection of a competition and it’s certainly not something you expect to see at what is a relatively high level of sport. So why didn’t LYIT travel? Well, a quick glance at the league table provides the first clue. Prior to Saturday’s scheduled game, the Ulster men were third from bottom in the Northern Conference with a 3-13 record. The top two teams from each conference qualify for the playoffs so with seven games to play, LYIT, like eight other teams in the 17-team league, had absolutely nothing to play for. You can certainly see it from the players’ perspective. Travelling all the way from

24 games is a lot and one wonders if there might be too many teams in the division. Donegal to Kerry to play a team you have very little chance of beating, in a game that is of no consequence to your season, isn’t exactly an enticing proposition. There’s always going to be a disparity between the very best teams in a league and the worst, but the gulf in quality in Division 1 does seem to be stark. DBS Éanna are the runaway leaders in the north and the Dublin Lions, Sligo and Tolka Rovers are all in contention for second. The other four teams are out of the running, and three of them have been out of the running from a very early stage of the competition. In the south, Ballincollig and the Lakers are well out ahead in first and second. IT Carlow are 12 points back and the next best, the Limerick Celtics and Portlaoise, are six behind them. So in total, 10 of the 17 teams have absolutely nothing to play for with roughly a quarter of the season to go. And many of those teams were already dead in the water by the half-way mark. From the outside looking in, 24 league games seems like a lot and one wonders if there might be too many teams in the division. The Lakers Team Manager ad-

mitted that he was of the same mind, but he was also quick to acknowledge the fact that the league’s governing body are doing a lot to help all of the clubs at this level. “There may be too many teams,” Brosnan said, “but Basketball Ireland did split the league into two to try and lessen the financial pressure on the clubs. It’s all about promoting basketball and they’re doing a great job of getting the game recognised across the country again. “It has been a very punishing schedule, though. We have 19 games played in the league plus two in the cup, and we have five more league games left. If you make the playoffs you have potentially two more followed by the League Trophy, which could be as many as four additional games. That’s 32 games in the season, which is very punishing. Ballincollig, who won the cup, could end up playing 34 games in total. “It’s tough for some teams who may feel as though they’re out of contention in the league at this stage.” One potential solution would be to divide the league into two based on past performances rather than location, i.e. having a Division 1 and a Division 2 with relegation and promotion on a yearly basis. If Basketball Ireland persist with the current structure, broadening the playoffs to include four teams from each conference could make the league more competitive. There would certainly be fewer dead rubber games and it would keep the weaker sides interested for longer.

MONEY MATTERS

Financially speaking, keeping a team going in the National League is a challenge and it doesn’t help when you miss out on a home game like the Lakers did last

weekend. “It’s difficult for a small club like ourselves that wouldn’t have the same size panels of some of the university-affiliated teams,” Brosnan explained. “The cost of travelling is huge and we rely on promoting our home games and filling the hall on Saturday nights to help with the financial burden that comes with this year’s tough schedule.” No one is saying it too loudly at the moment but in the long run the Super League is surely where the Lakers want to be. With Tralee and Killorglin also in the top flight, the prospect of multiple local derbies every season will no doubt excite officials, players and supporters alike. Last year’s clash with Killorglin attracted a 1,000 people to Killarney Sports Centre, the highest attendance recorded at any game since the Lakers rejoined the National League in 2017. For that to be an option at the end of this season, the Lakers would have to reach the final of the Division 1 Playoffs. The winners will earn automatic promotion, while the runners-up will face the second-from-bottom team in the Super League in a playoff game to decide who will play in the top tier in 2019/2020. Making that decider will be a tall order for Cormac O’Donoghue’s outfit as they will more than likely have to go through undefeated Dublin side DBS Éanna in the semis. The Lakers are in red-hot form at the moment having won 11 of their last 12 games but things are about to get a lot tougher. Their final five games of the regular season come against the top five teams in the Northern Conference, starting with the second-place Dublin Lions at home at the Auracle on Saturday, February 9.

Killarney youngsters bounce back in Barraduff The Killarney U16s once again proved that they can mix it with the cream of Munster when they returned to winning ways with a hard-fought, well-deserved victory over a gallant Kilfeacle/Cashel side on Sunday. Against the stunning, snow-covered backdrop of the mountains surrounding Barraduff, Killarney started the game on the offensive. Playing into a strong wind, they tested the visiting defence early on but found them uncompromising. For the opening quarter both packs were locked in an equal battle for supremacy. Cashel number 10 Stephen Ferncombe had a major influence on the opening half and his huge clearances kept Killarney retreating into defensive mode. Kilfeacle/Cashel enjoyed territorial advantage and launched several attacks, mainly through their back row, but strong tackling from John McCarthy, Shane McAllister, Pádraig Talbot and Brendy O’Donoghue kept them at bay. After running several close-in penalties and failing to get over the tryline, the visitors took the lead when Ferncombe slotted a penalty after 20 minutes. From the restart Killarney managed to gain a foothold in an attacking sense and started to impose themselves as Cormac Rowe and Bailey O’Sullivan were introduced to bolster the home pack.

A crucial moment arrived shortly before half time when ever alert Thomas Clifford snaffled a loose ball from a ruck on the left touch line and caught the defence flat-footed, racing away to touch down. The half time score of a very even contest was 5-3 to the hosts. With the wind at their backs for the second half, Killarney set out their stall early on, playing a territory game with clever box kicking from scrum half Peter Walsh and yard-gaining clearances from out half Donnchadh Grealy. Gradually with more time on the ball and forward momentum the new centre partnership of James Kennelly and Mikey Moriarty began to impose themselves. Enjoying territory and possession, Killarney were dominating and 12 minutes into the half they scored a vital try. They moved the ball impressively through several phases before full back Liam Randles entered the line at pace to cut back and sidestep over in the left corner. Peter Walsh nailed the touchline conversion to stretch the lead to 12-3. However, to their great credit and staring defeat in the face, Kilfeacle/ Cashel rallied. Bravely facing into the

BARRADUFF wind they ran ball wide and at speed, but were unable to penetrate as Dan Twomey, Thomas Clifford and Jack Kenneally were tackling resolutely on the Killarney wings. Perseverance and pressure eventually resulted in a mounting penalty count that gave the visitors hope, and an illegal tackle from John McCarthy resulted in a sin-binning. Tension mounted and for a brief period Killarney were reduced to 13 when Tommy Clifford followed his teammate to the bin for another high tackle. Kilfeacle/Cashel were now camped in the home 22 and they probed and reset repeatedly in search of a try. Resolute defence from big-hitters Rob Nealon, Adam Cronin and Cengiz Koyun initially held the visitors out, but impressive Munster academy player Ferncombe eventually found a gap to touch down. He then converted to bring the score to 12-10. Killarney, however, had learned a valuable lesson in Clonakilty the previous week and were set on returning to winning ways. Kicking long into the 22, they chased hard and turned over

the ball. Cleverly they set and recycled ball using dynamic forwards Pádraig Talbot and Darren Cronin to penetrate before again spreading the ball out left for Liam Randles to replicate his earlier try after some scintillating passing from the backs. The final score read 17-10 to the home team. Killarney’s achievement, so far winning three from four matches in the highest level of Munster competition, is to be commended. The final fixture before the knock out phase takes the lads to Nenagh on Sunday with several possible permutations. Team management have expressed their gratitude to senior clubmates involved in “rugby-ising” the fabulous Barraduff Community facility and to all the parents who vocally supported the team and provided the impressive post game hospitality.

Spa Muckross Community Games SWIMMING: It was a great day for Spa Muckross in the pool on Sunday. A big congratulations to Evan O'Donoghue who did the area proud. At only six years of age and in his first ever swimming competition, Evan came 2nd in the U8 25m freestyle. A great achievement at such a young age! Ella Cremin came 3rd in the U12 backstroke and Jenna Coffey a close 4th. The U14 backstroke saw a fantastic performance by Faye O'Neill to win a gold medal. Another great swim saw Ian Coffey win gold in the U14 breaststroke. Faye and Ian will now represent Kerry in the Community Games national competition in May.
