Lawlor’s Cross man drives coach for mercy mission

A well-known Killarney man was among a group of volunteer drivers who drove a fleet of coaches over five days and 5,000kms to help displaced Ukrainians. | By Sean Moriarty Humphrey Kerins was part of a Paddywagon Tours convoy to Warsaw last week as five coaches delivered much needed aid to refugees in the Polish city. The equipment was delivered to a regional sports centre that is now acting as a distribution hub for the donated supplies. The coaches returned with around 50 Ukrainians who have been re-homed in Ireland - including Killarney. Each bus had two different drivers who shared driving stints resulting in a nonstop drive from Dublin to Warsaw and back. Humphrey was among the group of 10 drivers who made the journey. Two other Kerry drivers also drove buses. They were Gabriel Finn from Annascaul who is the Transport Manager with Paddywagon Tours and DJ O’Connor from Kielduff.

DRIVERS: The group of Paddywagon Tours drivers, included Humphrey Kerins (Killarney), Gabriel Finn (Annascaul) and DJ O'Connor (Kielduff) on their way to Poland last week.

Paddywagon Tours is a customer of Humphrey’s Lawlor’s Cross Garage and when he heard that they were looking for volunteer drivers he jumped at the chance to help. “They had over 300 applications but I know the transport manager as we do a lot of work for them, so I got selected,”

Humphrey told the Killarney Advertiser. “It was a great thing to do.”

CHALLENGING Humphrey explained that the delivery of the aid was straightforward enough but the task of returning with very frightened and confused refugees was very chal-

lenging. “We expected to fill the five coaches but many of the people just did not want to leave, they had no idea where they were going,” he said. “It worked out because they had a lot more comfort on the empty coaches – they could stretch out across the double seats – some of them had not slept in days. Even at that they were very nervous when we stopped for comfort breaks and to change drivers. They had no idea where they were going.” Only one of the group of refugees spoke broken English and the group of drivers had to rely on his interpretations to make all the passengers - which included a man in his 80s, an elderly woman in a wheelchair and a couple with a special needs son - feel more comfortable. “We even brought back pets; one dog and one cat. The people did not want to leave without them, but can you imagine the hassle this caused in customs. The cat escaped at one point and ran to the warmth of the engine – we spent 45 minutes trying to coax him out.” In an amazing twist of fate, some of the refugees that Humphrey drove from Poland have been re-homed in Killarney. “Most of them went to either Kinsale or Killarney and I saw some of them walking down Park Road the other day,” he added. Humphrey praised the efforts of Brittany Ferries who played a key role in getting the refugees to safety. They arrived into Dublin via a sailing from Roscoff in France. “They fed us all, drivers and Ukrainians, and gave us cabins to sleep in but never charged us,” he added.

Ukrainian teens warmly welcomed into local schools | By Michelle Crean It was a nervous start for some students as they began their new school journey this week but they soon settled after the huge warm welcome they received. On Tuesday Killarney Community College welcomed 15 Ukrainian students into their school community. They were immediately integrated into their respective year groups and have appeared to have made a very positive transition into their new environment. The Student Council organised a collection of stationary and essential materials amongst the current student body in order to make the new students feel immediately part of their new classes and the school community. "We would like to wish these students a very warm welcome to our school," Principal, Stella Loughnane, told the Kil-

brought great energy and enthusiasm to the school this week." A number of Ukrainian students also joined St Brendan's College last week where they too were welcomed by staff and fellow students.

Advertiser launches English/ Ukrainian news column | By Sean Moriarty The Killarney Advertiser has been described as "pioneers of the Irish media" after launching a dual-language news column to help Ukrainian families integrate into the local community.

PLANS: Fáilte Ireland held its March meeting in Killarney last week where it took the opportunity to meet directly with representatives from the local tourism industry to discuss the new Killarney Destination Experience Development Plan. Photo: Valerie O’Sullivan

Fáilte Ireland to launch new Killarney plan in coming weeks Fáilte Ireland’s new Killarney Destination Experience Development Plan (DEDP) has been presented to local industry representatives ahead of its formal launch which will take place in the coming weeks. | By Sean Moriarty Last week the Fáilte Ireland board held its March meeting in Killarney and afterwards took the opportunity to meet directly with representatives from the local tourism industry. Fáilte Ireland’s board meeting in Killarney coincided with the staging of Meitheal, Fáilte Ireland’s longest running flagship trade event which took place over two days on March 31 and April 1 at the INEC. Ahead of the tradeshow, senior Killarney tourism figures were given the opportunity to see the Killarney Destination Experience Development Plan ahead of its public launch. This plan is one of four such strategic development plans being rolled out in Kerry by Fáilte Ireland along with local industry representatives, Kerry County Council and other key stakeholders.

Other DEDPs include Dingle Peninsula DEDP, launched 2020; Skellig Coast DEDP, launched 2017; The Cliff Coast DEDP, which is expected to launch in December 2022, and the West Cork Three Peninsulas and Kenmare, which is expected to be launched in May. “I am very pleased to have this opportunity to meet with so many members of the Kerry tourism industry and hear first-hand how collaboration is the key to building sustainable recovery for the industry in Kerry. Tourism in Kerry, and all across the country, has endured an incredibly difficult two years. As Fáilte Ireland supports the industry towards recovery it is important that we discuss key priorities and challenges together on a local level, to enable us to continue to provide practical supports and guidance to businesses on the ground,” said Fáilte Ireland Chairperson, Paul Carty.

From next week’s issue Kyiv journalist Natalia Krasnenkova will write a weekly column in both English and Ukrainian for the Killarney Advertiser. Natalia worked as a television news broadcaster for STB Channel and 5 Channel in her home country, but is now living in the Innisfallen Hotel in Fossa with her two teenage children who are attending local schools. Her English column will tell the people of Killarney about how she and her country people are settling into life in Kerry. Her Ukrainian language column will tell those recently arrived from the war torn country about what is happening in Killarney. It will serve as an event noticeboard and encourage the war refugees to attend local events and how they can get involved in local clubs and activities. “Our first priority was safety, then it was to continue the education for the children, the Ukrainians want to integrate into life in Killarney and now that the children have found schools the women have started work in the hotels and tourism industry,” Natalia explained.

NEW COLUMN: Kyiv journalist Natalia Krasnenkova will write a weekly column in both English and Ukrainian for the Killarney Advertiser.

She also ran her own PR company in Kyiv while her journalist husband Dmytro remains in their home city and continues to broadcast the latest news on the conflict. Speaking of her new role with the Killarney Advertiser she said that “this is an example to other media in Ireland". "This is the first media to notice this, you are pioneers in Ireland." The Killarney Advertiser is inviting clubs and societies in Killarney to submit suitable events to sean@killarneyadvertiser.ie for translation into Ukrainian. Look out for our April 15 issue for Natalia’s first column.

Oisin Murphy joins aid convoy to Ukraine | By Sean Moriarty Champion jockey Oisin Murphy is preparing to drive a truck full of aid to Ukraine on Sunday. He will join a group of British horseracing personalities and they hope to bring between eight and 10 horseboxes, supplied by Lambourn Racehorse Transport to Ukraine next week. Unlike other aid convoys, this one will not be stopping at the Polish border but instead will cross into Ukraine to the town of Przemysl, near Lviv, which has been under repeated Russian attack in recent days. After helping volunteers unload their donated cargo they will bring back horses that have been left abandoned after their owners were forced to flee the country. The mission is the brainchild of retired horse trainer Charlie Mann who ran a

similar operation during the Bosnian War in the 1990s. “The timing suits me, so I’ll be driving,” Oisin, who is on a break from racing due to personal reasons, said. “I jumped at the chance. We go out Sunday and while there is no timetable I expect we will be back by Thursday. We have been told there are animals out there that need to be re-homed so we will be returning with horses.” Mann decided to organise the convoy as one of his former employees was from Ukraine. “His mother is in Odessa and his sister is in Russia and we had to do something,” Mann said. “I could give a charity £1,000 but you don’t feel like you’re doing anything. Hopefully this is more and it might make a difference to somebody. Good on Oisin. It’s great to have him on board and I hope he’s as good a driver as he is a jockey.”

Music legend marks 50 years teaching | By Michelle Crean Last Saturday night was very special for one local music teacher who marked 50 years unbroken service with the Killarney Comhaltas branch. GOOD FRIDAY WALK: The Killarney Branch Kerry Hospice Good Friday Walk is back next week. Killarney's annual hospice walk is back

And to celebrate the very special anniversary members of the branch surprised Nickie McAuliffe, a world renowned fiddle and flute player, to a get together in the Heights Hotel afterwards. There they treated Nickie and his wife Ann, who is also coming close to her 50th year teaching for the branch, to tea, cake and a music session. He was joined by members of the local branch as well as some of his very first students which he taught at

Parlour 5 at the back of the Friary in 1971. "We are so honoured to have a man with so much knowledge of music," Geraldine Guilfoyle (O'Sullivan), chairperson of the Killarney branch, told the Killarney Advertiser. "He's so good to his students. He has a wealth of knowledge. He has not only taught them to play but given them a love of music. He gives of his time and is so passionate about teaching the history of the tunes." Geraldine had asked Nickie to compose a tune to mark his 50th year. On the night Nickie was presented with his composition 'Memories of Parlour 5' and a photo inscribed on a slate as a keepsake.

The annual fundraising walk is in memory of Vivien O’Shea, Sheila McGillycuddy, and all who passed away with life-limiting illnesses. Registration is from 9.30am at The Garden Restaurant, Muckross House on the day and the walk begins at 10.30am. There is a choice of two routes, an 8km walk from the Garden Restaurant via Dinis Cottage and a section of Torc Trail and return. The second shorter route is 6km from the Garden Restaurant to Brickeen Bridge and back. There will also be fun quiz questions along the way for the kids and adults to enjoy. There is no registration fee as there's a bucket collection on the day. Raffle tickets will also be on sale for some lovely spot prizes and complementary tea/coffee on return. “Bring the entire family along and enjoy a leisurely walk through our stunning National Park while supporting a very worthy local charity,” Julett Culloty, Secretary, said. "Suitable footwear is necessary in the interests of health and safety, especially along the section of the Torc Trail."

VOLUNTARY SERVICE

Kerry Hospice Foundation is a voluntary organisation dedicated to providing palliative care services to people with life-limiting illnesses. This care, which is free of charge, is provided at the foundation's 15 bed inpatient unit and Palliative Day Care Unit at University Hospital Kerry and also through the Home Nursing Scheme. Kerry Hospice Foundation has to raise €400,000 annually to co-fund the running of the new inpatient unit in conjunction with the HSE. Additionally, it costs €100,000 to fund the remaining services. Since the Kerry Hospice Foundation was founded in 1990 the people of Kerry have been very generous supporters, donating in excess of €11 million through various fundraising activities. The magnificent palliative care facilities, now available at University Hospital Kerry, are a testament to their generosity. "As our late departed county fundraiser Chairman, Ted Moynihan, used to say, “You may never need the hospice, but the hospice needs you”. The walk is one of many taking place around the county. If unable to participate you can donate online by going to www.kerryhospice.com.

Great eggs-citement planned for family fun day The good times are back at the Killarney Outlet Centre as the team prepares to throw the family party of the year on Easter Sunday. The day will be an eggs-tra special treat for children – and the young at heart – with many wonderful and fun-filled activities lined up from 2pm to 5pm. Taking centre stage on the family fun day will, of course, be the Easter Bunny who will be hopping around all afternoon, meeting and greeting the children and happily posing for selfies and snapshots.

There will be free facepainting for superheroes and princesses, free creative balloon modelling and, at 3pm, a free magic show that will leave everyone astonished. Fabulous fairground rides will also be available throughout the day and there will be some really wonderful surprises lined up as the bumper Easter party progresses. Businesses will be operating from 10am to 6pm on Good Friday and Easter Saturday, and from 12 noon to 6pm on Easter Sunday and Monday.

Dawid begins first treatment thanks to donations | By Michelle Crean It was an emotional moment for one family as their son with complex needs began his very first treatment this week.

Back row l-r were: Wiktoria Gluza, Féile O’Sullivan, Aaron Commins, Chloe Lynch Herlihy, Misha McCarthy, Liam Waldron, and David Lynch. Photo: Marie Carroll-O'Sullivan

Students prove they are a talented bunch The talent and craic was mighty at Killarney Community College on Thursday with the return of their ever popular 'Who’s Got Talent' competition. It took weeks of auditions to get it down to the final seven acts and they didn't disappoint as there was juggling, singing and dancing - even an act by a magician, as the students battled it out in the grand final for the top spots. The event was organised by Ms. Mary Fuller, Ms. Denise O’Sullivan and Ms. Joanna Hughes and was the 10th year of this very successful event which showcased the vast talents within the college. The glamorous judges for the competition included teachers; Ms. Marcia Kissane, Mr. Mike Lynch and student judge Ethan McKeon. After a most entertaining afternoon of amazing talents displayed by the students the overall winners were announced as; 1st place Chloe Lynch Herli-

hy, 2nd Place Trainwreck (David Lynch, Misha McCarthy, Sinead Greene and Grace Foley), and 3rd Place Dawid Szabat, and they received trophies and GameStop vouchers. “There was a huge buzz around the competition this year," music teacher and principal organiser, Ms Joanna Hughes, said. "Students were mad to perform and this was shown in the quality of their performances. They’ve probably been practising in their bedroom for the last two years so it was nice to perform in front of friends and classmates for a change. The competition encourages students to be creative, expressive and have fun in a safe and encouraging forum."

And it wouldn't have been possible without the help of school friends and the wider community who have helped with the huge cost. Last week five-year-old Dawid Ciemny's parents Slawek Ciemny and Kamila Smietanska accepted a generous cheque of over €3,000 from his school pals and staff at Holy Cross Mercy School, where he attends the ASD Sunshine Class, after a number of fundraisers were organised. Dawid suffers from a condition called Autoimmune Encephalitis which causes the body’s immune system to attack healthy brain cells. This week he began his first immunoglobulin infusion treatment in Poland with every session taking place six weeks apart and costing €5,000 each time. Although originally given the diagnosis of Autism his parents say it’s a lot more complex than that as Dawid is non-verbal and suffers from irrational anxieties and is in constant pain. In November his parents, who live in Courtyard Killarney, set up a GoFundMe page 'The disease has taken control over Dawid !' and have so far raised €8,632 of a €50,000 goal. With some of the funding raised online and that donated by the community through the school's fundraisers, it means that Dawid was able to begin his treatment. At the moment he is going through a series of tests and all going well he will soon receive his first infusion of immunoglobulin. Dawid's teacher Lucy O'Mahony said his father was deeply moved to receive a

cheque for the sum of €3,375 from the staff and pupils of both the Holy Cross Mercy School and the Monastery School. "He was enormously appreciative of the fact that such a large amount of money was raised for his son," Lucy told the Killarney Advertiser. "Slawek found it difficult to adequately express the extent of his gratitude to the two schools involved. He was equally touched by the lovely cards from the children expressing their concern and well wishes for Dawid." Dawid's mom Kamila said that they would like to thank everyone involved in fundraising. "All teachers at the school did a huge job organising the fundraiser and we are thankful. Thanks for the massive support. We would like to thank the children and their parents for engagement to help Dawid. Thanks to people with huge hearts we can realise next treatment plan." The fundaiser is still open, she added.

Further concerns raised regarding Port Road development | By Sean Moriarty Additional residents in the Millwood Estate have raised concerns about a new 228-unit development that could be built in their area. Last week the Killarney Advertiser reported that locals were up in arms over the potential development. A company called Portal Asset Holdings has lodged planning permission for the development at the rear of the District Hospital and to the rear of the cottages on Port Road. Worried residents believe a development of this size is not suitable for the area and last week outlined several concerns. Since the Killarney Advertiser published

that story a second group of residents have raised their apprehension about the proposed plans. They say there two issues at stake; they are worried about the size of the development and that it could extend to three or four storeys in height. They are also concerned that an access route will be created between the new development and the existing Millwood Estate which could lead to anti-social behaviour in their long-established estate. “We accept that housing will be built here, but it must conform with the other housing on its boundaries, so nothing over two storeys,” group spokesperson,John Fitzgerald, told the Killarney Advertiser. “As for the access, it is totally unaccept-

able that Millwood be used as an access point for this development. Extra activity and traffic will only increase safety issues, crime, anti-social behaviour and trash – scale the development down to blend in with the adjoining neighbour-

hoods.” The Killarney Advertiser has made repeated attempts to contact the developer and its engineering and architecture partners, but so far have been unable to get a comment from them.

Over 250 locals join 'Climb With Charlie'

It was a walk that was well supported all over the country and Killarney was no different on Saturday morning as over 250 people turned out to support a worthy cause. | By Michelle Crean Kerry Friends of Motor Neurone organised a walk in Killarney National Park to coincide with 'Climb With Charlie' which saw veteran RTÉ broadcaster Charlie Bird - who was diagnosed with Motor Neuron eDisease last October - take on Croagh Patrick helping to raise over €2 million for the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association and Pieta. "Kerry Friends of Motor Neurone wish to thank all who supported our walk on Saturday in Killarney National Park in conjunction with the Charlie Bird climb of Croagh Patrick and also to thank the many people who gave us very generous donations," Christy Lehane, Chairman of Kerry Friends of Motor Neurone, said. "We really appreciate your generosity." The day started off wet for the eager participants but it soon cleared up, he added. "Firstly the day started off rainy after all the beautiful weather we had previously. We were fortunate enough to have a marquee tent thanks to Denis Russell which kept the office staff dry. Soon

the weather brightened and the crowds started to arrive all in great form for the 40 minute walk in Killarney National Park. Everything was at a leisurely pace and over 250 people, not counting children, took part. "Thanks to all who did stewarding to ensure everyone walked safely. Thanks to Marie Linehan from Kerry Parents and Friends for all her help and assistance." The full amount raised from the local walk is still not totted up as proceeds are still coming in, he added.

Cycle club launches 'Couch to Ring of Kerry' Local cyclists are so keen to help others taking to the road that they've launched the 'Couch to Ring of Kerry' mentoring programme. An information session for people interested in joining the programme will be held on Monday next, April 11 at St Oliver's National School, Ballycasheen, where all will be explained. The programme will officially commence on Wednesday April 20. You can also indicate your interest by messaging Killarney Cycling Club on their Facebook page.

READY: Walkers ready to take part in the 'Climb With Charlie' fundraiser in Killarney National Park on Saturday in aid of the Irish Motor Neurone Association and Pieta.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

The aim of the 'Couch to Ring of Kerry' mentoring programme is to provide

adults new to road cycling and those who have not cycled in years, an opportunity to gain skills and experience of cycling in a group on open road in a safe and enjoyable environment as a stepping stone to riding in the Ring of Kerry cycle itself. A group of experienced Killarney Cycling Club cyclists will accompany participants on a once weekly cycle along a pre-planned route starting from a distance of 20km and building over the course of the 10 week programme to a distance of 80km. All you need is a roadworthy bike, a cycling helmet and a willingness to have a go! The first three spins are free, thereafter participants will need to join the Killarney Cycling Club.

Caretaker Kevin calls it a day at St Brigid's Presentation | By Michelle Crean After 14 years taking care of the school's maintenance needs, the caretaker at St Brigid's Presentation has called it a day. Caretaker Kevin Farrell has played a pivotal role in the school community but is now all set to begin a new venture. Some of the students presented a specially engraved spirit level as a keepsake.

Kevin joined the St Brigid's family in 2007 after inheriting the keys from Jim Moynihan. These have now been passed on to Vojkan Bencic. Kevin often went above and beyond his call of duty and will be sorely missed by students, staff and management. The Student Council made a goodbye presentation to Kevin for his invaluable commitment to the school community. St Brigid's would like to wish Kevin all the best in his next chapter.

Lily Ellen remembered at coffee morning A well attended fundraising event yesterday (Thursday) not only remembered a very special little Ballyhar girl but also raised vital funds for a very important service. | By Michelle Crean Staff and parents from Lissivigeen National School organised a coffee morning in the Royal Hotel to remember 20-month-old Lily Ellen Daly, daughter of Michael and Caroline Daly from Lisheenacanna, Ballyhar, who passed away in February last year from complications with Pulmonary Vein Stenosis (PVS). Lily Ellen's final journey from home to Cork hospital was made using the Irish Community Air Ambulance (ICAA) so the event was to raise awareness and necessary funds for the charity service. "They're the future paramedics and pilots and it's about teaching them about the service which is not Government funded. Initially it was going to be a non-uniform day but the Parents Association kindly decided to run a coffee morning alongside it." She added that the support yesterday was "just phenomenal". "The school community in Lissivigeen is remarkable, there's something very

special there. People were dropping in things for the raffle and vouchers all week and donating. It's about creating awareness for the kids and to keep the memory of Lily very much alive." She also thanked the staff at the Royal Hotel who were "amazing" on the day and added that Donie Lucey from ICAA will be at the school today (Friday) to speak to the children about the important service.

Cuts to disability grants affecting Killarney families | By Sean Moriarty A Woodlawn man, who is the father of a girl with severe disabilities in dire need of essential equipment, has raised huge concerns over cuts to the Housing Adaptation Grants. Last month the Government announced that Kerry County Council is to receive €2.4 million in funding under the scheme. The grant helps families of those with special needs including the elderly and those with disabilities. Steve O’Mahony’s daughter Alexis (5) suffers from PDH deficiency and requires

round-the-clock care. However, ceiling track hoists - which will help the daily burden of lifting their growing daughter from her bed to the bath and aid with movement in the home - have been removed from the scheme. He said last month’s announcement sounded great until the finer details were examined. “The devil is in the detail,” Steve told the Killarney Advertiser. He pointed out that he was not just speaking on behalf of his own family and their needs but was raising concerns for several Kerry families who could be affected by the new rules.

“Of course it all sounds rosy but some hidden details are missing,” he added. “Essential ceiling track hoists have been removed as a qualifying item for mobility aids. Families like my own do not want these hoists out of choice, it is a basic necessity and everyday that this drags on is another day of physical stress through the constant moving, washing etc of someone with a disability. There also exists a daily danger of serious injury to both the patient and carers and support nurses which of course breaches multiple health and safety guidelines of which the HSE and their staff operate within themselves."

He said that in many situations "they are putting their own staff under unnecessary risk and breaching many health and safety standards because of this ongoing issue". "My own wife currently attends a public physio on a weekly basis because of back issues which seems counter productive. The taxpayer is paying for her physio which would not have been needed if she had sufficient equipment for my daughter's needs!" The issue was raised in the Dáil this week after Sinn Féin TD for Kerry, Pa Daly, met the O’Mahony family in Tralee recently.

Students raise awareness about academic stress A group of local students have launched a new project to raise awareness about academic stress not only in their school, but nationally. | By Michelle Crean Young Social Innovators (YSI) from Killarney Community College plan to explore the struggle several students go through everyday either through exams or pressure from homework through 'Dedicated to Educated'. Students taking part in the project are Tamika Heaphy, Oliwia Ochnik, Sophie Jacobi, Ona Moreno Font, Blanca Beltran Juan, Irene Rueda Mosserat, Angelina Kendel, Rabea Flugel, Chloe Herlihy and Dominic Czuluk. "It is about raising awareness about academic pressure and stress for students as our goal is to raise awareness of the struggle several students go through everyday whether it would be over an exam or just pressure from homework," Chloe Herlihy said. "A goal we are aiming for is that people will be able to understand academic stress does not just come from school,

it equally comes from your surroundings and environment. From working with our guidance counsellor and interviews with teachers, we found that academic stress can affect one's mental health and how they see school. From our own studies carried out we decided to survey students and asked questions like “do you know what academic pressure is?”.

The results from the whole school was that 72% of students knew what academic pressure was." She explained that it was clear that the Junior years did not understand what academic pressure was. "After handing out our surveys and calculating the results we came to find that just over 23% of students ignore their

8.04.2022 academic stress and do not try to ease their stress or do not know how. During our interviews with teachers, we noticed a similarity all the teachers talked about noticing the stressed students overexerting themselves, not being motivated to go to class and being not motivated to do homework. We want to change this for all students in the county and country." Academic pressure can come from many influences, such as pressure from parents, but also from oneself, because one may compare oneself too much with others and stress all the time to be like others. "We are working with our guidance counsellor to create a presentation for students on tips and tools on how to deal with stress from study. Once this is completed, we will be going class to class showing this PowerPoint. We also aim to work with and fundraise for Southwest Counselling." Lorraine Crowley, TY Coordinator and YSI Guide, said these Young Social Innovators have shown such passion to raise awareness and create change when it comes to academic pressure. "They really want to educate students on how they can limit their stress while studying at the same time.” For more information email dedicatedtoeducated@gmail.com, Instagram: dedicatedtoeducated, TikTok: dedicatedtoeducated, YouTube: dedicated to educated, website: Dedicatedtoeducated.boxmode.io, or Pinterest: dedicated to educated.

Kenny qualifies for World Championships | By Sean Moriarty Olympic walker David Kenny has, for the first time, qualified for the World Athletics Championships in Oregon, USA later this year. This will be his first attempt at the World Championship and he is already ahead of his pre-season targets. His third place in the 20k World Athletics Race Walking Tour in Podebray in the Czech Republic on Saturday last was one of his best performances of his career. His time of 1hr 19mins 44 secs sets him out as the second fastest Irish race walker over the 20km distance. Only multiple Olympian Rob Heffernan’s time of 1hr 19mins 22secs is better than the Farranfore Maine Valley Athletic Club man’s efforts. “I am delighted,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “In one way it takes the pressure off as my target was to qualify through the World Ranking system. But now there is an expectation from Sports Ireland to finish in the top 10 and be in

Ukrainian locals invited to night of music and dance | By Sean Moriarty Newly arrived Ukrainians will get to sample Irish music, song and dance at a special event on Monday night. Gaelic Roots, the resident Irish culture show at the Avenue Hotel has extended an invitation to the refugees to attend the performance. So far 62 people, including 16 children,

have taken up the offer. “We want to show them what is happening in Killarney and let them see Irish culture first hand,” Suzanne O’Donoghue of the Avenue Hotel told the Killarney Advertiser. “A lot of their kids play musical instruments – it will be a nice night out for everyone.” Deros Coaches will provide free transport to the venue.

Local groups benefit from Community Support Fund €750,000 has been announced in funding support for community groups and projects across the county. Details of who is to receive the funding was released by Kerry County Council under the Community Support Fund for 2022. A total of 178 groups and projects, including 30 from the Killarney District, received grant aid worth €385,000 this year while a proportion of the fund, totalling €365,000, is being retained to leverage funding from other funding streams for strategic projects at Municipal District level. The fund, which is in its eighth year, has now supported 1,778 projects to the value of €6m since its establishment in 2015. As occurred in previous years, some of the Community Support Fund will be used this year to target strategic projects in the five Municipal Districts (MD) and to co-fund projects which are in receipt of grants from other sources.

Councillors from all five MDs met last week to decide on the allocations and unanimously welcomed the provision of support to the recipients. Councillors congratulated all the community groups and acknowledged the tremendous voluntary work that these groups do. "This is a really important fund for hundreds of community and voluntary organisations and it allows them to carry out essential works and improvements in their localities," Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr. Jimmy Moloney said. "I want to pay tribute to the staff in Kerry County Council’s Community Department as well as our Municipal District staff across the county for supporting the applications process and liaising with group who avail of the funding."

Killarney’s festivals to get €30,000 in funding | By Sean Moriarty The future of some of Killarney’s best-loved festivals is secure thanks to much needed financial support that was distributed through Kerry County Council’s Community Support Fund. Several community groups and organisations received funding under the programme. A total of €30,000 was allocated to four of the town’s festivals. Killarney’s newest event, The Wander Wild Festival, is in line for €10,000 under the scheme. The St Patrick’s Day Festival and Christmas in Killarney will each get €8,000, and the annual 4th of July Festival is to get €4,000, “The financial contribution made by Killarney Municipal District Council and Kerry County Council is, of course, an enormous boost for which Chamber if extremely grateful," Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce, president Niall Kelleher, told the Killarney Advertiser. "It almost goes without saying that, without this wonderful support from the municipal authority, the festivals would struggle to survive. These events attract

tens of thousands of people to town every year but, of course, festivals are very expensive to run. It costs hundreds of thousands of Euro to keep these wonderful events up and running and, in addition to the very significant promotion and marketing costs, we must ensure the infrastructure and all the necessary equipment, decorations and attractions are in place.” Killarney is particularly fortunate to have such outstanding and high quality community celebrations to attract people from all over the world and provide top class entertainment. “Everybody is fully aware and appreciative of the hugely positive impact of events like Christmas in Killarney, the St Patrick’s Festival Killarney, the 4th July Festival and, the latest addition, the Wander Wild Festival which was such a major success in its inaugural year,” Mr Kelleher added. “Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce is, as always, very grateful to the local businesses who contribute so willingly and so generously every year, without fail, to help offset the costs of running the town’s festivals.”

EXHIBITION: Aine Devlin and Aoife O'Donoghue from St Brigid's Presentation School, Killarney, exhibited at the 2022 Certified Irish Angus Schools Competition at Croke Park on Friday last. The competition, supported by ABP and Kepak, challenges students to rear five Irish Angus calves and learn about the care and attention required to produce quality beef for consumers. Five out of the 35 exhibiting schools who best demonstrate an understanding of the project along with innovative ideas will be presented with Irish Angus calves at the National Ploughing Championships in September.

Sam Bolger selected for Irish team ahead of Rás Mumhan Killarney’s rising cycling star Sam Bolger will have the honour of racing for the national team through the streets of his home town in two weeks.

was the Drumm Cup event that took place in Currow last weekend. His preparations for the Easter Classic continues this weekend when he races in two different national road racing events. Tomorrow (Saturday) he will race in a Newcastle West Wheelers event in Limerick. The following day he will be in action in Cork in the Donal Crowley Memorial Race organised by Blarney Cycling Club.

STRONG LOCAL RÁS ENTRY

| By Sean Moriarty The Lewis Road man has been selected by Cycling Ireland as a member of the Irish Junior Cycling team for the Easter weekend's Rás Mumhan. The new look event – the biggest bike race in Kerry – will be contested over four stages from Good Friday until Easter Monday. Killarney Cycling Club has been tasked with running Stage Two on Easter Saturday. The stage will roll out from St Oliver’s School in Ballycasheen and finish in Sneem. The early part of the stage will be neutralised through Killarney town centre before the race proper gets underway at Fossa. “On Saturday April 16 the Rás Mumhan will leave St Oliver’s School around 11.15am and will make its way down Countess Road, onto Mission Road and through Ballydowney to Fossa where the

racing will begin," Killarney Cycling Club PRO, Keith Lyne, said. From Fossa the riders will head through Glencar, over climbs at Ballaghbeama and Coomacista before ending in Sneem. “The club has been working hard with the organisers to ensure that everything runs smoothly over this spectacular stage. We will be working hard to ensure we cause as little disruption as possible to

traffic but do ask for driver's cooperation as we move through these sections of the town. The Killarney club will also be cheering its member Sam Bolger who has been selected to ride in the Irish colours with their Junior Cycling team - a great honour for the rider and the club.”

BOLGER’S SELECTION Bolger’s first race in the Irish team jersey

Killarney Cycling Club has entered a strong team in this year’s Ras Mumhan. The team will be led by three-time county champion and Lacey Cup winner Conor Kissane who contested the previous running of Rás Mumhan as a member of the same team Bolger has now been selected for. John Brosnan is the second A1-classed rider on the team and he has ridden in multiple Ras Tailteanns and Rás Mumhans. He is also a former county champion. Lorcan Daly (A2) is having a great season and is a rider who loves climbing and could be in line for honours in this section come Easter Monday. Galway native Shane Spellman (A2) has been living in Killarney for six years and is a former hurler and Ironman. He will be well able for the challenge of the Rás. Shane works for the Rás sponsors Kerry Group. Ewan Buckley (A3) has moved from rowing to bike racing and carries some very good form into the four-day classic.

Top music talent to help Ukraine appeal Some of the country's best musicians are planning a unique night of music, support and hope and it is expected to be a sell-out event. The Coronas, Gavin James, The Academic, Hermitage Green and Susan O’Neill, along with MC Fergal D’Arcy, take to the stage for the 'Concert for Ukraine' at the Gleneagle INEC Arena in aid of the Irish Red Cross Ukraine Appeal. All proceeds from the concert - which takes place on Friday May 6 - will be donated to the Irish Red Cross who are providing crucial emergency aid for Ukrainians within the country as well as those who have been forced to flee Ukraine. “From all of us at the Irish Red Cross – we are grateful for the incredible support of The Gleneagle Group in putting together this historic concert in aid of the Ukraine Crisis Appeal," Charlie Lamson, Head of Fundraising, Irish Red Cross, said. "To have the Coronas, Gavin James, The Academic, Hermitage Green and Susan O’Neill all rowing in behind this effort means so much to us. The Irish

Pupils spring into action | By Michelle Crean Local pupils were very happy to spring into action as part of their Green Schools/An Taisce Spring Clean Up Day in Kilcummin National School on Friday last. Like the Scoot on a Weekday that they participated in last month, this was yet another excellent Green Schools initiative led by the Green Schools Committee. "We are delighted that the whole school is afforded the opportunity to participate

again in the National Spring Clean Up this year, as we engage in efforts to keep Kilcummin looking good," school principal Gillian Sheehan said. "Each class has been designated a location in and around the village of Kilcummin and our cleaning efforts will continue again next week. A special word of thanks to John Moriarty and all at the Rural Development Office for their support. Well done to the Green Schools committee, the pupils and staff of Kilcummin NS on a wonderful clean up! Maith sibh go léir!"

read Sea of Tranquility Author: Emily St John Mandel Sea of Tranquility is a novel of time travel and metaphysics that precisely captures the reality of our current moment. Edwin St Andrew is 18-years-old when he crosses the Atlantic by steamship, exiled from polite society following an ill-conceived diatribe at a dinner party. He enters the forest, spellbound by the beauty of the Canadian wilderness, and suddenly hears the notes of a violin echoing in an airship terminal - an experience that shocks him to his core. Two centuries later a famous writer named Olive Llewellyn is on a book tour. Within the text of Olive’s best-selling pandemic novel lies a strange passage: a man plays his violin for change in the echoing corridor of an airship terminal as the trees of a forest rise around him. When Gaspery-Jacques Roberts, a detective in the black-skied Night City, is hired to investigate an anomaly in the North American wilderness, he uncovers a series of lives upended: The exiled

son of an earl driven to madness, a writer trapped far from home as a pandemic ravages Earth, and a childhood friend from the Night City who, like Gaspery himself, has glimpsed the chance to do something extraordinary that will disrupt the timeline of the universe.

Harry Styles Harry’s House Former One Direction member Harry Styles’ impressive solo career is continuing as he has released his new single ‘As It Was’ ahead of his third album, consisting of 13 tracks, ‘Harry’s House’ releasing on May 20. The song acts as a template for Harry to display his hidden heartfelt vulnerabilities on. The single is a brave choice from Harry Styles as it is in stark contrast to music from his two other successful albums, ‘Sign of the Times’ and ‘Lights Up’. The high tempo nature of the song is clear to symbolise the inner

demons swirling in his mind. The ‘As It Was’ video evokes the song’s sense of personal conflict, with Styles and a partner literally running in circles, fitting for sentiments like “Gravity’s holding me back”. The beloved English singer-songwriter, originally from Redditch, begins his world tour ‘Love on Tour’ on June 11 in Glasgow and with Harry Styles performing at the Aviva Stadium on June 22 his Irish fans excitement has reached fever pitch level.

HEALTH & FITNESS Advice - By Brian Foley Brian is available for advice and fitness consultations, Call 087 403 0894 or email info@activate.ie • www.activate.ie

Enjoy life and find the right balance I was recently reminded of a blog I wrote almost five years ago about dieting around Christmas time and how it is important to enjoy life and find balance. I spoke at length to someone about it and how this construct of exercise takes on varied meaning depending on a person’s life views and experiences. Long story short, the gist of the blog was you only get typically less than one hundred Christmases so life is too short to be fretting about calories at this time of year. A few weeks later someone sent me the writings of a local coach who wrote a retort to this saying such a “relaxed” approach was naïve and counterproductive to getting “results”. As I approach almost 40 trips around the sun and countless hours of working with people on their own journey towards their own health and fitness goals, have my views changed and have I perhaps become less naïve? Funny enough, no, not one bit. It’s amazing how time and experience can change your perspective on life and what exactly health and fitness means in the grander scheme of things. As the conversation continued we spoke

about people who are always looking for “the next thing” in health and fitness. Yes, novelty and a change of scenery does help sometimes and if that is a reason to change things up then I think it can be a really positive thing. But if someone is looking for “more” in fitness I can say from experience there is “no more” to fitness. The more is always and was always contained right within you. The key is always consistency and contentment in yourself. I’ve tried so many forms of exercise and found different elements of joy in them all. Not everyone is geared that way, and it really is a case of do what makes you happy, as what makes you happy will keep you consistent. That young coach who spoke of naivety at the time probably looked at things like contentment and enjoyment as “nice to have” features of a programme that was geared at a “before and after” photo. What experience will teach them (or hopefully since has) is that contentment and enjoyment are the cornerstones of a successful exercise modality. As the saying goes; “intensity adds, consistency multiplies”.

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS

Tenants’ rights Q: My private rented accommodation is damp and mouldy. Does the landlord have to fix this? A: Yes, your landlord has a legal duty to make sure that your home meets certain minimum physical standards. This includes keeping it in a proper state of structural repair and free from damp. Q: Does my landlord have to provide a washing machine? A: Yes, your landlord must provide you with access to a washing machine, and a clothes-dryer if your home does not have a private garden or yard. Some of the other things they must provide include: • A 4-ring hob with oven and grill • A cooker hood or extractor fan • A microwave oven • A sink with hot and cold water • A well ventilated bathroom which is in a separate room from the living quarters • A fixed heating appliance in each room which you can control • Vermin-proof rubbish storage facilities Q: Is my landlord responsible if my possessions are damaged because of an issue with the property, for example, if the pipes burst? A: While the landlord is responsible for keeping the building in good repair they are not generally responsible for any damage to your possessions. Several insurance companies provide contents insurance for private tenants. Q: What should I do if my house does not meet the minimum standards? A: First speak to your landlord about the problem. Put your complaint in writing and include as many details as possible, including photographs, videos and any receipts for repairs you did at your own expense. If your landlord refuses to carry out the necessary repairs, you should report them to your local authority.

GETTING YOUR DEPOSIT BACK FROM YOUR LANDLORD

Q: I am moving out of my rented accommodation, when will I get my deposit back? A: If you haven’t broken your tenancy agreement, you should get your depos-

it back soon after you move out. The landlord may need time to inspect or repair the property. You should expect to get your deposit back within two weeks of moving out, though this is not a legal requirement. Q: Can my landlord keep my deposit? A: Your landlord can only keep your deposit for the following reasons: • Rent arrears (unpaid or outstanding rent) • Unpaid bills • Damage to the property above normal wear and tear • You did not give adequate notice Q: What should I do if the landlord tells me they will not return my deposit because the property is damaged? A: Your landlord can only keep your deposit if the property is damaged above what is considered normal wear and tear. If you don’t have photos of the property from when you moved in and out, you should ask for photographic evidence of the damage from the landlord. If they say the repairs have been done ask to see the receipts for the work. Keep a record of all your correspondence. Q: What do I do next if my landlord still won’t return my deposit? A: You can make a complaint to the Residential Tenancies Board (RTB). The RTB deals with most disputes between landlords and tenants, rather than the courts. You can apply for dispute resolution by mediation on the RTB’s website for free. _________________________________________________ Read more about resolving a dispute with your landlord on citizensinformation.ie. Thousands of volunteers collected hundreds of bags of litter across the county on Saturday during the 10th annual County Clean Up. For the first time in three years, the County Clean Up was able to take place at full capacity and almost 5,000 volunteers registered with KWD Recycling to participate. KWD has begun the collection of all of the litter which has been collected by community groups and individuals all over Kerry. The Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr Jimmy Moloney thanked all those who participated. "It was so uplifting to see so many people in their high-vis vests and equipped with bags and litters pickers in towns and rural areas in every part of the county. The weather held up nicely and

ensured that volunteers could play their part. I want to say a very sincere thank you to each and every one of them for their assistance and particularly Tidy Towns committees and community groups who coordinated the effort in their areas," said Cllr Moloney. Noel O’Reilly of KWD Recycling echoed the appreciation for all of the volunteers. "The County Clean Up is now a well-established community event and gives an annual focus to the environment and waste in Kerry. We would ask everyone to bear with us while we gather up all of the bags of litter for disposal. Well done to everyone who took part."

GARDENMAGIC

Gardening - By Debby Looney

Debby is available for advice and garden consultations, just call 086 6088156 or email barnhillky@gmail.com

It's time to take care of your lawn Living in Kerry is a real treat at this time of year when Magnolias shine. There are so many beautiful specimens in gardens, and it is now they are spectacular. In February they are instantly recognisable by their large soft flower buds reaching up to the sky, but in March we are treated to an unsurpassed show! Magnolia soulangeana will grow to quite a tree, but Magnolia stellata is suitable for smaller gardens. For a shady spot in your garden, possibly under a magnolia, I recommend Bergenias. These are evergreen, hardy, low-growing perennials, which are now flowering in many shades of pink. Pink Dragonfly, Bressingham white and Silberlicht are just a few of the many varieties available. Lawn care really begins in March. If your lawn is looking thin, or has a lot of moss, you may need to remove old thatch and moss in order to re-seed. There are a lot of types of grass seed, that which is suitable for a shady garden, or “tough grass”, and even “smart seed”, which incorporates a water retaining gel. However, aeration and nutrients are the key to a healthy lawn. If reseeding, and especially when sowing a new lawn, consider mixing in an amount of white clover. Clover fixes nitrogen in the soil, eliminating the need for chemical fertilisers, as well as providing bees with a great source of

nectar. White clover stays low, and will not ruin the look of your lawn. It is, in my opinion, definitely the way to go. There are many types of fertilisers for sale, and I thought I would quickly go through a few of them today. Sequestered Iron, or Sulphate of Iron, is one which many people ask about. It helps ericaceous plants which are struggling to grow stronger and produce flowers. Apply in early spring. Sulphate of Ammonia is a fast-acting nitrogen supplement, suitable for greening up plants. Sulphate of Potash is high in potassium promoting flowers and fruit, as well as helping the plant to resist pests and diseases. Superphosphate helps to ripen fruit, and can be applied throughout the summer. Epsom salts are high in magnesium, which is needed for healthy foliage and is also very good for tomatoes. Fish blood and bone is a general fertiliser, but is “natural” as opposed to chemical. Bonemeal is also a natural product, and is excellent for root growth. Garden lime is also an important additive, especially if you have very acidic soil. Slightly alkaline conditions are especially good for cabbage varieties, as it prevents clubroot. As always, read the labels, and when you can use organic products.

How to breathe new life into old decking | By Tony Griffin, Manager Pat McDonnell Paints Tralee Given our climate in Ireland, decking requires regular maintenance. We get a lot of queries at Pat McDonnell Paints this time of year about how to breathe new life into old decking. Once you have decided it is time to spruce up your deck, below are the steps that are involved.

STEP 1: PREPARATION

For every paint job you need the surface as clean as possible. Clean down the entire area with a decking brush and multi-purpose solution like Farbex Exterior Fungicidal Wash to remove any mould, moss and algae making sure to scrub between the boards – leave for 15 minutes and hose it off. Avoid bleach cleaner as this can shade the wood to a white which could cause further damage. Leave the decking to dry for at least two days. Tomorrow it might look dry but there will still be moisture in the deck and if you seal that moisture in it will come out somewhere. Trapped moisture can make the deck look like it’s cracking and splitting. If required, sand off any loose or flaking areas and run a cloth soaked in white spirits to remove any sanding dust.

STEP 2: CHOOSE THE CORRECT PRODUCT

Typically, your decking will have been coated with Decking Oil, Decking Stain or a Solid Decking Colour. To re-coat with a similar type of product is the most straightforward but remember while you can go darker with a stain or oil it's very difficult to go lighter so I always advise to test first. Sikkens HLS is my go-to product in a stain or a solid colour; another alternative is Textrol Oil. TIP: Check the weather forecast before you start, you will need a few of days of dry weather to complete your project but best avoid very hot weather as

DECKING: Tony Griffin, Manager of Pat McDonnell Paints Tralee, gives advice on how to revive your decking.

this can result in the product drying too quickly and not fully absorbing into the wood.

STEP 3: NOW IT IS TIME TO PAINT/STAIN/ OIL YOUR DECKING!

Use a 4” paint brush to apply your chosen product, a 4” Classic from Harper & Green would suit, or you could use a 4” Masonry Brush if you had it to hand. While you can use a roller it can sometimes result in an uneven finish. TIP: Start at the furthest end of the deck and go in an 'S' shape painting one or two boards at a time for an even finish. We recommend you give it two coats in April. After your final coat, if the gods allow it, leave at least 24 hours of good weather before you use it. At the end of September, give your decking the third coat to protect it from the winter.

Make the best of the Easter break As we head into the Easter holidays, Leaving Cert students are undertaking a busy and stressful week of oral exams and music practicals. You are bound to feel exhausted at this point in the year so it’s all about pacing and priorities for the last stretch. Once you return to school after the break, you will have six and half weeks to the beginning of the exams on June 8. Before that you will have graduation to look forward to but it is very important that you make the best use of the class and study time you have left.

PRIORITIES - REST, RECHARGE AND REVISION!

The orals, music practicals and any outstanding project work you need to complete should take priority for the first week of the holidays. Towards the end of the week, make out a revision plan to run from Easter Monday for the remainder of the holidays. You will definitely need to take a couple of days to recharge after a very busy term so take a breather over the Easter weekend, get some rest and enjoy some time with family and friends. Make a priority list of topics you want to revise in each subject and assign those topics to particular times on each of your study days. You will have learnt a lot from doing the mock exams about the structure of the paper, marking schemes and what the examiner is looking for. Build this into your revision from now on. Always finish your study sessions by looking at an exam question on the topic you have revised. It is also useful to look at exemplar answers. www.studyclix.ie is a real help for this.

tion in the lead up to the exams and for a lot of June will be focused on performing as best you can in the Leaving Cert, so it can be difficult to find the time to focus on career choices. I highly recommend that you take some time over the Easter break to review your CAO course choices, making sure that you have placed them in order of preference. Explore all the options available in colleges for further education, many of which will allow you to progress onto higher education through CAO in subsequent years. Check out apprenticeship options which continue to expand across a variety of career sectors. Some study abroad options are still available for those who are interested. For students who need more of a supported transition into education, training or the workplace, check out the National Learning Network. Go néirí libh in the orals and practicals. The end is in sight now so make the best of the Easter break and you will reap the rewards in June and on results day!

FUNDS: Marks and Spencer in Killarney would like to thank all of their customers and friends who have supported them over the past several months in raising funds for Pieta House in Tralee. Store manager Paul Daly presented €1,100 to Con O'Connor of Pieta House on behalf of everyone in the store.

The first and most important advice would be to wear sunglasses always as premature ageing from the sun and squinting can cause damage. Secondly, use a specific eye make-up remover as this area is very delicate. Thirdly, apply a fantastic eye cream or eye gel twice daily. I recommend Sothys Radiance Eye Cream to combat circles, wrinkles and dark spots. Finally it's important to have an eye facial, especially if you haven't been having facials regularly, are 25 and over and want to keep your eyes looking young, or aged 45 plus and you want to correct the signs of ageing, wrinkles, dark circles and puffiness. It's also good if you're affected by screen light exposure, sleepless nights due to hormonal changes or late nights out. The new CACI eye revive treatment is for everyone concerned with ageing eyes. It will help to lift and tighten the skin around the eyebrows and corners of eyes, reduce the puffiness under the eyes, and reduce fine lines and hooded eyelids. With the dual action of LED light therapy, the micro-current energy stimulates tissue regeneration and helps the production of collagen. The

synergy of these two technologies provide visible and longer lasting results. The treatment itself is very relaxing, takes 45 minutes and focuses on the eye area. It starts with the lifting of the brow muscles, smoothing the fine lines at the corners of the eyes (crow's feet) and draining build up of fluid and lymph under the eyes. We then use specific serum filled eye rollers with micro-current which have a cooling effect on the skin to gently tighten and tone sagging muscles around the eye area, whilst reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It's finished with a silicone mask infused with hyaluronic acid and we use a galvanic current to push in the serum and hold it in the deeper layers of skin. It's very refreshing and brightens the skin. For more information or to book an appointment call Jill on 064 6632966.

Iconic EastEnders character passes away One of Britain's best loved actresses June Brown - best known for her funny EastEnder's character Dot Cotton - sadly passed away earlier this week aged 95. June, passed away peacefully at her home in Surrey on Sunday evening, with her family by her side. Her creation and portrayal of Dot Cotton made a huge impact in British television, and she created iconic moments that not only entertained the nation but at times changed it a little for the better. “We are deeply saddened to announce that our beloved June Brown, OBE, MBE sadly passed away," an EastEnders spokesperson said on Monday. "There are not enough words to describe how much June was loved and adored by everyone at EastEnders, her loving warmth, wit and great humour will never be forgotten. June created one of the most iconic characters in Dot Cotton, not just in soap but in British television, and having appeared in 2,884 episodes, June’s remarkable performances created some of EastEnders finest moments. We send all our love and deepest sympathies to June’s family and friends. A very bright light has gone out at EastEnders but we shall all be raising a sweet sherry in June’s memory. Rest in peace, our dearest June. You will never be forgotten.” June Brown’s family said "We are deeply saddened to announce our beloved

mother, June, passed away very peacefully at her home in Surrey on Sunday evening, with her family by her side. We would kindly ask that our privacy is respected at this very difficult time." Natalie Cassidy, who currently plays Sonya on the show said June taught her everything she knows. "We laughed, we drank red wine, we learnt lines. She told me all her stories which I will keep close to my heart forever and she knew all of mine. We have lost a legend and the best character actress

EastEnders has ever seen and will ever see. I will miss her so much.” Adam Woodyatt, who has played Ian Beale since the show began in the mid80s worked with June since then. “I’m lost for words, something June never was. So many memories, so much fun. Just purely and simply an incredible woman who had the most incredible life and career, I was fortunate to have shared a small part of it. They never made you a Dame (we did try), but to me you will always be Dame Brown."

The King’s Arms pub in Kent has solved the age-old problem of pet owners having to share their meals with their begging dogs. The public house has released a new menu just for dogs, consisting of four options for dog’s sensitive palettes, there is even a vegetarian option for non-meateating dogs. Diners can choose meat options such as a Meat Mezze, consisting of chicken, beef, ham and “whatever's in the kitchen”. Vegetarian options include cheese cubes. Pet owners have lauded the pub for their great initiative. One pub goer proclaimed, “My pooches absolutely woofed down their doggy dinners!”, another visitor “highly recommends” the menu and “will definitely be back”. It’s fair to say the King’s Arms gives its furry friends a warm welcome.

Kerry Group suspends operations in Russia Kerry Group has this week announced the suspension of its operations in Russia and Belarus. The decision was welcomed by Ireland South MEP Billy Kelliher who believes the move could encourage other large companies to relocate from the two countries. Despite Kerry Group's decision, where it employs 250 people, the company insists it will continue to pay staff wages and comply with its legal obligations. The food ingredients company has been

operating in Russia since 2006 and opened a brand-new research and development operation in Moscow in 2014 followed by a new manufacturing facility in the city in 2018. However, Kerry Group has decided to continue supplying food, beverages, and pharmaceutical products to the local population as the company believes they play a critical role in sustaining a reliable food chain. The Tralee based company has paused capital investment, stopped all exports and suspended the production of all

branded products in Russia and Belarus. “This suspension will be managed in an orderly manner, during which the company will continue to pay employees and oblige our legal obligations," the company said in a statement to the stock exchange on Monday. "Kerry Group has continuously monitored the unfolding situation in Ukraine and we are horrified at the escalation of the humanitarian crisis, over the last number of weeks the Group has scaled back activities in Russia and Belarus."

Stories of hope and recovery go on tour Kerry bus passengers are being reminded to mind their mental health through a new photo exhibition which will feature stories of hope and recovery. Grow Mental Health will feature the stories at Tralee Bus Station for two weeks starting this week. The display started in October last year in Busáras, Dublin and moved to Waterford, Cork, Galway, Limerick, Letterkenny, Sligo, Drogheda and Dundalk Bus Station. This partnership initiative is to promote positive mental health and raise vital funds for Grow Mental Health, the non-profit group. Expressway is also supporting the Yellow Walk on Sunday April 17 by asking the public to wear yellow and get out walking for just 30 minutes, to raise vital funds for mental health supports. You can walk wherever it is you wish and if you are not available on Easter Sunday, you can walk on any day that is suitable for you. As one of Ireland’s longest standing mental health charities, empowering and supporting over 1,000 people weekly, Grow Mental Health, which was set up in 1969, has recorded a 400% year on year increase in demand for services since the pandemic began. Delivering a national network of peer support groups to local communities through a tailored 12-step programme of recovery and growth, the group is delighted with the launch of this exhibition, documenting its members’ stories. Proudly supported by Expressway, the initiative will be promoted right across

the bus stations and through Expressway social media channels over the coming weeks, with the public asked to read the stories of recovery and hope and to donate to Grow Mental Health – these donations will help people who are struggling with their mental health. “This campaign highlights the real stories of our Grow members who have struggled and overcome mental health challenges," Michele Kerrigan, Chief Executive, Grow Mental Health, said. "Our aim is to inspire others who are struggling to reach out and access our free, non-judgemental peer-support groups either in their local community or online. Now, more than ever, we need to finally do away with the stigma around talking about and getting support for our own mental health challenges. The support of Expressway is invaluable in amplifying our message of hope and recovery." Aled Williams, Bus Éireann, Senior Regional Operations Manager, South, they "are extremely proud" to partner up with Grow Mental Health. "We would encourage all of our customers in Kerry to take a minute and read these stories of recovery and hope in our bus station over the coming weeks. We hope this partnership initiative promotes positive mental health and raises vital funds for Grow Mental Health." Tipperary based company ‘The Lunch Bag’ are intent on feeding Ukrainian students nationwide and have set themselves an admirable goal to feed those who have recently joined Irish schools. Currently, DEIS schools provide all students with free school meals, however 'The Lunch Bag' is the only school lunch company for non-DEIS schools, where parents can order school lunches via an App and have them delivered directly to participating schools. "Some of these children will be placed in Deis schools where they are fortunate enough to get their lunch provided through a Government subsidy scheme," said Ray Nangle, CEO of The Lunch Bag. "For many more, this is not the case. This is where we come in. 'The Lunch Bag' allows parents to order a wide variety of fresh lunches through the App and have it delivered to school; we want to extend this opportunity to Ukrainian parents and children without any concerns about cost." For a 3-piece lunch costing just €10 for a

week, the company aims to donate €2 for every €2 raised, ensuring funds raised are split evenly across all new arrivals to the schools. "We are overwhelmed with generosity already," Nangle, who thanked Accountancy firm Baker Tilly for starting things off with a massive €3,500 donation, added. "We already have some Ukrainian students beginning to receive our lunches and it's one less thing for the parents to worry about. With three kids myself, I feel it's only right that we all come together as a community to help these little ones feel welcome, safe and well fed." Almost 17,000 refugees have now fled Ukraine for Ireland, with 40,000 expected before the end of April. Currently, 37% of those arriving are children, who will access the Irish education system and be in need of school lunches and supplies. If you would like to help provide school lunches to these children, donate via The Lunch Bag's GoFundMe page 'Ukrainian School Lunches', via their social media pages, or by calling 0433362038.

Le Pen closes gap on Macron in French elections As the French Presidential election heats up Le Pen has prioritised the cost of living, putting Macron on the backfoot. Current President Emmanuel Macron is hoping for another victory this month but rival Marine Le Pen is closing in as their campaigns come to a close. Emmanuel Macron has encouraged the French to vote in the first round of the presidential election on April 10. “Many people sign up to causes, movements … but do not necessarily vote," he told radio station Inter France. "Causes are important … but the profound changes we can make to society

come when we vote.” Polls show the current presidents lead narrowing to 6.5%. The election campaign had been described as lackluster up until the rise in support for Le Pen, who has strong links with Vladimir Putin, economics professor Anne-Laure Delatte proclaiming, “The risk of a Le Pen victory is higher than in 2017, what’s shocking to me is that many in France seem to be ignoring the risks”. The rise of the far-right candidate is down to an “international populist wave”, according to political analyst, Dominique Reynié.

The story so far

high returns on offer. The least satisfying but most prudent action here? Focus on your long-term objectives and forget the rest. There will always be a seemingly justifiable reason to sell, but history has shown that markets prevail.

Stocks have rebounded in recent weeks after a rocky start to the year amid concerns about the Federal Reserve tightening monetary policy to fight inflation and the war in Ukraine. At the very start of the year, money in the system and record low interest rates meant stocks kept climbing higher despite the brewing of some severe problems. Evidence of inflation to anyone who fed their families or filled their cars was now beginning to appear in official statistics. Russia had started amassing troops on the Ukrainian border. These factors led to an inevitable market reaction. In the weeks that followed, market pandemonium ensued. The tech-heavy NASDAQ index fell sharply and entered into a bear market, down 20% from its highs, while the S&P 500 fell 12.5%. Equity strength returned in March, and the recovery has been nearly as spectacular as the decline that preceded it. The major indices have recouped roughly two-thirds of the losses sustained over

the previous two months in a single month. Despite the late comeback, all three major averages posted their worst quarter since March 2020. The Dow and S&P 500 declined 4.6% and 4.9% respectively, and the Nasdaq dropped more than 9%. But we are not out of the woods just yet. Volatility is likely to persist.

HINDSIGHT IS 2020

It’s easy to look back now once we have experienced a significant run upwards and state that the market was oversold, and this decline was a buying opportunity, but I think that missed the point. It undermines the uncertainty that exists when war is raging and the value of your assets are falling. The reality is, it’s not how much the mar-

ket has fallen that scares investors, it’s how much it could fall. Every time the market falls a little, we worry it will fall a lot. It’s human nature. Me telling you last month that corrections are a regular part of the market function, and we have seen three corrections of 10% or more in just over three years, doesn’t strip out the gnawing thought that this time might be different. Unfortunately, stock investing isn’t free. Volatility and uncertainty are the mandatory entry fees if you want access to the

Volatility is likely to remain, but some sectors will absorb the impact better than others. Exposure to real cash-flow generating assets such as rental real estate is crucial. Equity exposure should be focused on companies that can pass on rising prices to consumers without much disruption to their net margins. Think consumer staples and utility companies. Even if prices rise, we still need groceries and electricity. Lastly, oil and energy companies, especially those that do not hedge away their price exposure, seem to be the obvious trade of the day. In recent years, there has been a lot of talk about the stranded asset risk of oil and the environmental consequences that must be considered. Still, without an immediate substitute available, our dependence looks set to linger on over the medium-term.

Breakdown rescue cover explained A large number of insurers now include breakdown rescue or recovery on their private car insurance policies. It is important to check your own terms as there could be limitations as to the age of vehicle that can get this cover. Also, some insurers only give breakdown with “comprehensive cover”.

USUALLY THE FOLLOWING KINDS OF BREAKDOWN WOULD BE COVERED:

Mechanical breakdown, fire, theft or attempted theft, malicious damage, punctures that need help to fix or to replace a wheel, lost keys, stolen keys and keys broken in the lock or keys locked into the car.

Cover applies in the 32 counties of Ireland and in England, Scotland and Wales. There may be restrictions to cover for finishing your journey if it’s outside Ireland.

THE FOLLOWING BENEFITS ARE NORMALLY INCLUDED:

Roadside assistance: The insurer will send a competent repairer to help you at the scene and usually provide one hour’s labour. Towing: Cover is provided to tow the car to the nearest motor garage or to your own garage.

Finishing the journey: Transport can be arranged to reach the final destination. There are also benefits such as accommodation while you are waiting for repairs to be finished. Theft of your car: A replacement car can be provided if your car has been stolen and not recovered within 24 hours. A claim under the breakdown section will not affect your No Claims Bonus. It is crucial to check your own policy wording as some insurers will only cover breakdown away from your private residence. Some insurers impose maximum ages for vehicles that can benefit from breakdown cover.

Significant increases in property prices The latest house price report from property website daft.ie turns up some interesting, if not unsurprising, facts on the market. It looks at the first quarter of 2022 (Jan – Mar) which shows significant price increases and continued supply issues. Housing prices rose by 2.4% on average during the first three months with the average listed price nationwide in Q1 now €299,093, up 8.4% on the same period in 2021 and just 19% below the Celtic Tiger peak. The increase in Munster (outside the cities) was 13.3%. Just 10,000 homes were listed for sale on March 1, during 2019 the average number of homes for sale on the market at any one time was just over 17,500. Inflation in housing prices remains high – as has been the case consistently over

the last decade, increasing prices reflect a combination of strong demand and very weak supply. Significant increases in the cost of construction have simply added to this. Some interesting key points to note were that almost half of those looking to buy, but not straight away, cited the need to save for a deposit as a key factor in delaying home purchase.

DELAYS

Roughly four in five respondents cite the lack of homes as a factor in delaying home purchase. The number of homes on the market continues to fall. The total number of properties available to buy on March 1 nationally was just 10,047, down by almost 2,000 from the same period last year and the lowest on record in a series dating back to January 2007.

In the Munster region, listed prices increased by an average of 2.7% between January and March, up 13.3% year-onyear. Annual price inflation in Munster is above 10% again after a record level of annual inflation in Q1 of 2021. Supply of properties in the Munster region is at a new low, with just over 2,800 properties on the market in Munster on March 1, down from 3,618 on the same date a year ago. "On a local level, supply of properties in the Killarney area remains at an all time low," Ted Healy said. "As a result we are experiencing a sharp rise in prices being paid for well located second hand properties. With limited new construction expected in the short term this trend is unlikely to change. We have a list of buyers eager to purchase property in the Killarney area but

unfortunately the properties simply are not available. We would be delighted to speak to anyone considering selling their property and can be contacted on 064 6639000 or killarney@dng.ie."

KELLEHER

Treasured memories of Connie Kelleher Shinnagh Upper Rathmore who passed away on 7th April 2021. As we fondly remember Connie on his 1st anniversary. We his family, would like to take the opportunity to express our gratitude and thanks to all who sympathised with us on our sad loss, those who telephoned, send messages of support through RIP.ie, Mass cards, enrolment cards, floral tributes. Those who brought food, visited the house, our kind relatives, neighbours and friends for their support, we greatly appreciated it. To Dr Christine and all her staff at Millstreet Medical Centre, Reen’s Pharmacy Rathmore, to all at UHK, especially the Aghadoe Ward for their great care and kindness to Dad over the years. Even though a lot of people couldn’t be with us due to the Covid restrictions, our biggest comfort of all was seeing the turnout of everyone who stood to pay their respects on Connie’s final journey from Shinnagh to his final resting place. Thanks to John D O’Keeffe Funeral Directors and his team for their kindness and guidance in arranging the funeral. A special word of thanks to all who cared for Dad during his last few days at home, we are very fortunate to have such caring nurses in our family circle. To local community nurses, to all his home help workers, especially Noreen and Siobhan who brightened up his day and gave him excellent care over the years. Our thanks to Fr Pat who called to Dad regularly, for celebrating his funeral Mass, to Paud and Mary for the wonderful singing and music. As it would be impossible to thank everyone individually please accept this acknowledgement as a token of our sincere gratitude. The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass will be offered for your intentions. Kerry have promotion firmly in their sights

| By Adam Moynihan

Kingdom head for Croker seeking silverware plus seat at top table Their male counterparts got the job done last weekend, now the Kerry ladies are gunning for National League glory on the hallowed turf of Croke Park. The Kingdom face Armagh in the Division 2 final on Sunday and victory will mean more than just a trophy. If they can find a way to defeat their Ulster counterparts, they will earn a place in Division 1 for 2023. Returning to the big league has been a major goal of Kerry’s since they lost

their D1 status in 2018. They have come mightily close, reaching the Division 2 final in 2019 and 2021 (the 2020 competition was not completed) before coming up short on both occasions. It’s fitting that Kerry and Armagh should contest this final as both sides boasted a perfect record in their respective pools before successfully

navigating the semi-final phase of the competition. Armagh’s last four result was particularly eye-catching: they demolished Laois on a staggering scoreline of 7-18 to 1-9. Star player Aimee Mackin registered 1-7 in that senior versus intermediate clash and Kerry will need to keep a close eye on the 2020 Player of the Year if they are to prevail. Kerry, meanwhile, saw off the challenge of Monaghan in their semi-final with three points to spare, thanks in no small part to a wonderful lobbed

goal from the boot of Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh. The experienced sharpshooter kicked 1-9 in total, with eight of those points coming from frees. Armagh and Kerry last met in the league in 2020 when The Kingdom came out the right side of a two-point game in Tralee. Joint managers Declan Quill and Darragh Long will be delighted with a repeat of that result on Sunday. This match will form part of a double-header with the Division 1 final between Donegal and Meath. Both games will be broadcast live on TG4.

Killarney Valley enjoy historic indoor season The rise of progressive athletics club Killarney Valley continues apace. As the indoor season reaches its conclusion, KVAC can proudly reflect on a historic few months that included sending men’s and women’s teams to the National League for the very first time. The Killarney teams gave good accounts of themselves in Athlone and Dublin. The women’s team of Sarah Leahy, Melissa Ahern, Ellen Moloney, Alison Butler, Grace O’Meara, Rachel Griffin, Ciara Kennelly and Katlyn Moynihan finished 10th overall, while the men’s team of Connor Gammell, Sam Griffin, Karl McCarthy, Dara Looney, Oisín Lynch, Jason O’Reilly, Darragh O’Leary, Jordan Lee and Kevin O’Callaghan came 11th. “The achievement of our club being able to cover so many events at this national level as a team was always an ambition of ours,” coach and committee member Tomás Griffin said. “The goal was to achieve this by 2024, so to achieve it by 2022 gives us great heart that our sport is definitely on the rise in Killarney.” In the Munster Championships held throughout February and March, KVAC athletes claimed eight individual gold medals and a relay team gold. They also won six silver medals and seven bronze. At National Championship level the green and purple vest was definitely no-

ticed for all the right reasons. KVAC had five national silver medalists this season, as well as seven bronze. Five KVAC athletes finished in the toughest of spots - fourth place - in national finals and two finished fifth. The national silver medalists were Sarah Leahy in 200m in both National Seniors and Irish Universities; Ciara Kennelly in National U23 and Irish Universities; and Jordan Lee in National U23s. The National Bronze medalists were Sarah Leahy 60m and Irish Universities; Jason O’Reilly U17 400m; Oisín Lynch U17 800m; Keelin Veerasoo U17 triple jump; Michael Murphy Masters O55 60m; and Darragh O’Leary with UL’s cross country team. “The over-arching theme for this indoor season has been the sense of ‘team’, even though athletics is viewed as an individual sport,” Griffin explained. “We can hold testament to the fact that when the culture and ambition is built on ‘We are Better Together’, then the future continues to be ‘KVAC Rising’." Great credit must go to coaches Con Lynch (distance); Tomás Griffin and Alan Delaney (sprints, hurdles and jumps); Tom Doherty (throws); Bríd Stack, Jean Courtney, Jerry Griffin and Sylvyn Veerasoo (teens); and Kevin and Karen Smith, Amelie Leventi and both Anna O’Sheas (juveniles).

Munster double for KRFC

A late push saw the Killarney U16s capture their second Munster title of the season at a resplendent Musgrave Park on Sunday last. They were pushed all the way by a gallant Shannon side but the Kerry girls showed massive resolve and determination to secure another prestigious trophy. Killarney started off very strongly and raced into a commanding 14-0 lead after just 11 minutes. A superb try by team captain Fia Whelan, which she duly converted herself, sent the Munster League champs on their way and then, moments later, a penalty try was awarded to Killarney. Katie O’Donoghue was next to score for Killarney after some great interplay by Bronagh Dorian and Ali O’Donoghue. Shannon responded with a try just before half-time, but the Killarney girls still led by 16 points (21-5) at the break. Whatever the Shannon mentors said at half-time clearly worked as they scored the next two tries to make it a one-score game midway through the second half. The Shannon brace seemed to be the catalyst for Killarney. No. 8 Ava O’Malley gathered the ball at the halfway line and

made a fabulous weaving run to score a phenomenal try in the corner. Replacement Holly O’Sullivan was obviously hungry to get into the action very quickly after coming on and she scored a superb try to close out the game in the dying minutes. “The girls have worked extremely hard all season and have improved week on week,” coach Josh Whelan said. “They are a superb bunch of young girls and an absolute joy to coach. “Obviously the girls played their part on the field but the glue to keeping the whole thing together all season is our amazing manager, Anne Gabbet, who deserves special mention. Without Anne days like this wouldn’t happen.”

KILLARNEY: Annie O’Reilly, Ella Guerin Crowley, Molly Gabbett, Joanne O’Keefe, Melissa McCarthy, Grainne Kennedy, Clodagh Foley, Ava O’Malley, Robyn Landers, Fia Whelan (captain), Katie O’Donoghue, Bronagh Dorrian, Ali O’Donoghue, Niamh Dorrian, Marina Eager, Holly O’Sullivan, Jess O’Sullivan, Miriam O’Sullivan, Isabella O’Leary, Grainne Kennedy, Lucy O’Sullivan, Nell Moore. Coaches: Diarmuid O’Malley, Josh Whelan. Manager: Anne Gabbett.

O’Sullivan third in Irish National Rally Championship Noel O’Sullivan has moved to a provisional third place in the Triton Showers Irish National Rally Championship. The Muckross-based co-driver guided Armagh’s Darren Gass to third on Sunday’s Birr Rally, the second round of the series. Their next event is the Monaghan Rally at the end of April. The returning Keith Cronin and Mikie

Galvin were in second place for much of the Birr Rally. They were using the event as a high-speed test session ahead of another attempt at the British Rally Championship which they last won in 2017. However, their Volkswagen Polo RC2 suffered a suspected broken driveshaft on the penultimate stage. While disappointed not the finish their main task was to get used to their new car ahead of the first British round at the

end of April. Lissivigeen National School teacher Elaine Ní Shé, co-driving for Alan Nesbitt, took home the Women in Motorsport Ireland trophy for the highest placed Top Part West Coast Championship registered female contender. This was the second time in as many rallies that she won this trophy. The Down and Kerry pairing of Raymond Spence and Ger Somers prepared

for their next outing – The Rally of the Lakes – and were happy to reach the finish with the car in one piece ahead of the main event later in the month. Meanwhile, two members of Killarney and District Motor Club are set to contest Sunday’s Willie Loughman Memorial Rally in Carrick-on-Suir. Donagh Crowley is on co-driving duty for Gerard Lucey in a Mitsubishi Lancer E9 while Niall Myers joins

Clinical Clifford puts Adam Moynihan was in Croke Park as Kerry secured their 23rd National League title Another wondrous display by David Clifford helped Kerry to a surprisingly comprehensive victory over Mayo in Sunday’s National League Division 1 final. Clifford was simply sensational on the day, tormenting his marker Pádraig O’Hora and scoring six points and a classy goal the process. For Mayo, the only real positive was the return of long-term injury concern Cillian O’Connor. The championship’s all-time leadings scorer received a warm Croke Park welcome when he was introduced as a substitute in the 56th minute but not even he could penetrate Kerry’s mean defensive unit. In truth, Kerry were dominant all over the pitch as they retained their

CROKE PARK league title and secured a unique twoand-a-half-in-a-row.

GAVIN WHITE Points by David Clifford, Stephen O’Brien and Adrian Spillane gave Kerry a 3-2 lead by the 10-minute mark but it could have been much more. Paudie Clifford failed to convert a goal chance in the 5th minute and then the Mayo defence scrambled to deny the younger

Clifford after Tadhg Morley fisted a high pass across the square. Even so, singles by the Fossa brothers gave Kerry a three-point advantage, and points by James Carr and Jordan Flynn were cancelled out by Paul Geaney and Jack Barry to leave the scores at 0-7 to 0-4 with 20 minutes on the clock. Kerry welcomed Gavin White back into the starting line-up and the incredibly pacy wing back cause the opposition

all sorts of problems in that first half. White’s efforts were rewarded in the 24th minute when he bravely reached for Paul Geaney’s deflected shot and palmed home Kerry’s first goal of the game. He received a severe whack in the face for his troubles and had to leave the field, but thankfully he returned later in the half. That goal put some daylight between the sides and The Kingdom never looked back. David Clifford launched over another beauty to make it a seven-point game and although Mayo went on a mini-run with points by Ryan O’Donoghue, Carr and Conor Loftus, it was Kerry who finished the half in the ascendency. David Clifford brushed aside the chal-

Mayo to the sword lenge of O’Hora to chalk up his fourth of the day and then goalkeeper Shane Ryan marched forward to send over a spectacular free from way out on the Cusack Stand sideline. Ryan’s point would prove to be the last of the period and Kerry went in six points to the good (1-10 to 0-7).

GAP

Despite some fine scores from Michael Plunkett and Ryan O’Donoghue (two), Mayo were unable to eat into Kerry’s lead in the third quarter. Paul Geaney (two) and a Paudie Clifford 45 kept The Kingdom ticking over and when things opened up for Dara Moynihan in the 49th minute, he made no mistake to widen the gap to seven. Kerry were dealt a blow in the 51st minute when Diarmuid O’Connor received a black card and when O’Donoghue scored again, Mayo sensed a turna-

round. It was the Kerry faithful who liked what they saw next, however, as their boys rattled off 1-5 without reply to put the outcome of this final beyond doubt. First the younger Clifford fired over a superb point from a tricky angle, and then Adrian Spillane scored an excellent solo point after he was picked out by his half forward line colleague Moynihan. Paul Geaney picked off another fine score in the 57th minute before the walking highlight reel, David Clifford, buried the opposition almost singlehandedly. Clifford had O’Hora hanging off him and chatting into his ear all day but the former Sem student did his talking with ball in hand. After receiving a pass from Tony Brosnan, he breezed by his Mayo marker and popped over his sixth point. Then, in the 66th minute, he left O’Hora eating dust before dispatching a

perfectly placed right-footed shot over the onrushing Rory Byrne in the Mayo goal. The score now read 2-18 to 0-11 and Kerry had two hands on the cup. Geaney added his fifth point and then, two minutes into stoppage time, Jason Foley sprinted 135 metres to gather a deflected shot and score Kerry’s third goal of the game. Foley was one of Kerry’s best performers throughout the league and speaking to the media after the game, Jack O’Connor noted that it was only fitting that the Ballydonogue man should round off the campaign in style. Afterwards, stand-in captain and Man of the Match David Clifford and captain Joe O’Connor lifted the Division 1 cup together. Kerry supporters will be hoping that it’s not the last time the pair get their hands on silverware this season.

Staked his claim for the No. 1 jersey with a confident display. Kicked a sensational point. 2

Quietly went about his business.

Look, we’re under no illusions, Mayo are down a share of top class players. Their strength is probably in their back line with the likes of Oisín Mullen, Paddy Durcan, fellas like that… They’ll be a team to be reckoned with when they have all those players back.” O’Connor believes that Mayo will be a tougher proposition in the championship

“Paddy is a very clever coach. Just a good fella. Very bright, very sharp. He probably gives us a different angle that we didn’t have. O’Connor on the influence of Tyrone man Paddy Tally

“The lads are really enjoying it. They're buying into the team ethos and team concept.” Kerry’s manager says morale in the camp is high

3

It’s none of my business. We'll play wherever we're ordained to play. I won't get involved in that to be honest. It's not my area. We'll just concentrate on getting the team as right as we can. The Kerry bainisteoir when asked about the furore surrounding the venue of Kerry’s Munster semi-final against Cork

Capped another brilliant performance with a goal. Kerry’s Player of the Year so far. 4

A gifted footballer but perhaps playing within himself slightly. 5

The fastest man in Ireland with ball in hand? Torched the Mayo defence and was fully deserving of his goal. 6

Strong, committed and racking up the interceptions. Thriving at centre back. 7

Underrated. Consistently impressive this and last season.

Kerry had huge wins in the league last year and when push came to shove… it didn’t do them a pile of good. We’re certainly going to keep our feet on the ground. O’Connor downplayed the significance of his team’s impressive victory over Mayo

8

A mixed bag for the Na Gaeil man. Black carded in the 51st minute. 9

Worked hard and had some good moments. 10

Made some nice contributions, particularly in the second half. 11

A joy to watch but will no doubt be working on his 1 v 1 finishing this week. 12

Proved that he is more than just a workhorse by kicking two fine scores. 13

Has rediscovered some kind of form but will be disappointed with some of his turnovers. 14

Outrageous. We are witnessing greatness.

I’m not into piseógs at all. Winning the league led to victory in the All-Ireland in each of O’Connor’s previous “first” years with Kerry, but he’s taking nothing for granted

15

Kicked five points (four from play) and linked up well with David Clifford. M

His team selection raised one or two eyebrows but no one can argue with the result. Has overseen a marked improvement, particularly in defence.

Very little has emanated publicly from that body but I have no doubt there are frantic efforts underway privately. Just like the graceful swan gliding peacefully on calm waters, but under the surface those damn legs are working furiously to reach the safety of the bank – or, rather, the banks of my own lovely Lee. The Lee flows alongside Páirc Uí Chaoímh, that magnificent stadium, albeit in the wrong location in my opinion. Not that we in Kerry GAA circles have been clever in selecting the best location. I have dealt with this issue in the past, contending that the Kerry Centre of Excellence is in the wrong location at Currans. There were extenuating circumstances when the proposed excellent choice of site at Fossa fell through. Unfortunately, in my opinion, the Kerry County Board moved with undue haste in settling for Currans. The old maxim still holds true: location is everything.

SEMI-FINAL

So where will be the location for the Kerry v Cork Munster football semi-final on May 7?

Without the benefit of knowing what negotiations involving the vested interests took place during this week, one can only make an educated guess on the likely outcome. I believe that the game will go ahead at Páirc Ui Rinn on May 7. Kerry and Cork have a long-established home and away arrangement for their Munster Championship games each year, irrespective of whether it is in the first round or at the semi-final stage. We have new managers in both Kerry and Cork. It really is no business of Kerry boss Jack O’Connor and the astute Dromid man did the right thing at the correct time. Silence is golden in such circumstances. Cork have home venue, but a certain Ed Sheeran is booked for Páiirc Uí Chaoímh and will take centre stage in every sense of the phrase. He’s a fine singer and performer, but why is this English singing star tying up Páirc Uí Chaoímh slap bang in the peak GAA season? Money. Yes, money matters and when the revamping of Páirc Uí Chaoímh ran so much over budget, the Cork County Board was left with a hefty bill, currently estimated in the region of €25 million. How to manage such an enormous debt is a tall order for the board led by Kevin O’Donovan, who has taken over from

Frank Murphy, the first full time GAA secretary in the country. He ran the county board for over 40 years and his successor Kevin O’Donovan is the new secretary/CEO. With the help of Cairde Chorchaí, the board booked the popular Sheeran to earn a significant windfall. Admission prices are not cheap by any means. Patrons will get little change out of €100 for a good ticket. Sheeran is on a world tour so the Cork slot fits in well with the promoters, unfortunately at a crucial time in the GAA calendar. The Cork County Board would have been aware of that but in fairness to them the decision to split the GAA season into two parts for 2022 (January to July for intercounty and the rest of the year for the club scene) came late.

KEITH RICKEN

Keith Ricken is in his first year as manager of the Cork senior football team after guiding the U20s to All-Ireland success. When Páirc Úí Chaoímh was booked he made it known to the Cork County Board that he and the players wanted Páirc Uí Rinn – not to take the easy option of switching to Killarney. After the 20-point trouncing in the Fitzgerald Stadium last summer, he didn’t want his young and

inexperienced players thrown into the lion’s den. I believe that Keith should stick to his guns and the players also want Páirc Uí Rinn. If they played this game in Killarney, Kerry would have to travel to Cork for the next two years. These young players know full well that many of them may not even be on the panel for next year. For a Munster final one can expect an attendance of around 20,000 in Killarney and in Páirc Uí Chaoímh. 10,000 or a max of 11,000 will fill Páirc Uí Rinn. What are the chances of a regular follower getting into Páirc Uí Rinn? What’s more Sky, and not RTÉ, will be transmitting this Munster semi-final. What has surprised me that all the focus seems to be on the Cork football team but little about how the Sheeran factor will impinge on the hopes of the Cork hurlers. Never forget that hurling is number one in Cork and football comes a very poor second. The hurlers would like Páirc Uí Chaoimh, but the fallout from the Ed Sheeran concert will hit them hard. Whatever about the hurling, the likely scenario, I expect, is for Kerry to defeat Cork on May 7 – and Páirc Uí Rinn will be the venue.

In a tight first half and on a tough pitch the play ball on Athletic were on unlucky to take the lead on a few occasions. In second half it was much the same but Kenmare broke away and from the resulting corner they got a penalty but our number 1 Ethan Clarke made a fantastic save to keep us level. After this Athletic pushed on a from a corner themselves took the lead, James O’Callaghan finishing at the back post. Athletic doubled their lead when Sean Lyne met a beautiful corner from Conor Moynihan and headed into the bottom corner. Eric Corcoran was unlucky not to make it 3 at the end but we will take the three points and shows how much all 15 players play their part all season long.

Dr Crokes GAA RESULTS: Co League Div 1 - St Marys 2-9 Dr Crokes 4-14. An understrength B team lost heavy to Brosna. C team recorded their first victory with a win over Na Gaeil B. HURLING: On Friday night last, April 1, it was Round 4 of the Credit Union County Senior Hurling League Division 1, and a

trip to sunny Ballyheigue for our hurlers. It a game played in windy but dry conditions, the home side stretched into an early 1-5 to 0-2 lead after the quarter of an hour mark, with Crokes staying in touch with the strong Ballyheigue side with scores from Michael Lenihan. New recruit James Murphy had a stormer at corner back, helping keep the Ballyheigue attack at bay throughout the first half. We had a mountain to climb at the interval, trailing 1-13 to 0-5 at the short whistle. But the second half definitely belonged to Dr Crokes, with scores from Owen Hayes and David Carroll, meaning we outscored the home side in the third quarter 5 points to 1. Some goal chances from Colm O Cuiv, Michael Lenihan and Mike Milner forced saves from the Ballyheigue goalkeeper, on another day we could have come home with the victory. As goal chances came and went, Michael Lenihan again kept the scoreboard ticking over for Crokes, again winning out the second half 8 points to 6. But unfortunately we fell short at the end and went down 1-19 to 0-13. It is a break weekend for our senior hurlers this weekend, but our juniors travel to St Pats East Kerry this coming Friday evening in the opening game of the South Kerry League.

MINOR LADIES: Our KC Construction & Fitouts sponsored Fossa Minor ladies travelled to play Kerins O’Rahillys for our opening round of the Div 3 Co Lge. Played at 11 a side as we were missing a few players due to injury and illness. We even had a few girls who weren't feeling the best but travelled to ensure it would be a competitive match for Kerins O’Rahillys and to ensure Fossa ladies did not have to concede the fixture. Our girls weren't fazed and showed massive character as they faced a strong Kerins O’Rahillys side. At half time we were up a point 4-2 to 3-4. In the second half the girls did brilliantly in a hard fought match and did not let themselves down. The result didn't go our way Fossa 5-6 Kerins O’Rahillys 7-5.

Milltown/Castlemaine GAA Club COUNTY SENIOR FOOTBALL LEAGUE: Division 2, Round 2 - Milltown/Castlemaine 'A' travelled West to Annascaul on Saturday last for Round 2 of the Credit Union County Senior Football League. They came away with a big win on a scoreline of 3-15 to 0-7 to make it two wins from two games. The game was tight in the opening half as Annascaul played with the breeze, Jason Hickson and Sean Kennedy their chief marksmen. Milltown/Castlemaine would have retired

to the half time interval the happier of the two sides leading 0-6 to 0-4 with points from Dylan O'Neil (0-2), Eanna O'Connor (0-2) and a score each from midfielders Donal Dennehy and Brendan Delaney giving them a narrow lead. Second half goals from Eanna O'Connor (penalty) and two goals from substitute Jonathan O'Sullivan put the result beyond doubt as the away side ran out seventeen point winners in the end. Division 6A, Round 2 - Milltown/Castlemaine 'B' 3-13 Kenmare Shamrocks 'B' 3-10. The Milltown/Castlemaine 'B' side made the long journey to Kenmare on Friday evening and made it two wins from two following a three point victory. Milltown/Castlemaine led 3-6 to 1-5 at half time with the goals coming from Sean Hogan (2) and a penalty from Conor Spillane. Pointed efforts from Kieran O'Carroll, Sean Hogan and Conor Spillane seen the visitors carry a seven point lead into the break. The second half was a tightly contested affair and the home side battled back to make it 3-9 to 3-7 after they hit 2-1 without reply. Our lads settled however and seen out the game, showing great composure with important scores from Liam Roche, Conor Spillane and Brendan Casey. They will travel to Fossa next weekend for Round 3.
